- Cameron's past as listed on his character sheet has some good plot hooks. I would like to flesh out the one where people have killed his parents and adopted father and want to kill him, and his sworn revenge against them.
His familiy and their old adventuring companions were supposedly killed at the Tears of the Wold Inn. As a player I am slightly familiar with this place, which is why I chose it. The Inn has a ships figurehead name Livia. She is sentient and intelligent and most likely saw what happened that night. The staff may all know something too, but Cameron has never been there to ask. He doesn't know if Morgan has questioned the staff or Livia, and since he is dead, may be hard to ask.
Cameron has these things he can call on to gain clues. He has the list of names that the thugs at the Tears of the Wold carried that Morgan gathered from their bodies. He has the list of names Morgan gathered from the thugs that attacked Morgan and Cameron at Cameron's house. Both of these note are fouled with the blood of the man carrying them when they died. He has a lock of his mother's hair, possibly useful for a speak with dead or a location spell. He has a lock he took from Morgan's beard as he prepared his foster father to be given back to the stone.
Targath Stonebiter is the dwarven agent of Jancassis that recruited Cameron to the faith. He should have some cleric levels, but any other classes he possesses are up to you, probably he is an Avenger as well. He has either a knack for knowing what someone is thinking, telepathy, really good Sense Motive, or a divine connection to Jancassis to be able to know what and how to manipulate people to join her cause. He also shows up in the most unlikely places at the darndest times to push, prod or lead a follower on. Cameron expects it will probably be him that administers his initiation into the Avenger class.
What Cameron believes Cameron believes that someone from his parent's past came back to take revenge on their adventuring group. Why his name is on the list is a mystery, unless they are just being extra vengeful. He believes that his parents were killed in the attack at the Tear's of the Woods Inn. He believes that Morgan's death and animation as a zombie to return him to his home is related to the deaths of his parents. Cameron believes he can find the person behind all of this and take revenge.
The Truth This is where I don't know anything and I would like the DM's to take over.
Possibilities include that Cameron's father was a criminal mastermind back in the day and staged this all to get back in the game. Cameron's name was on the list so that he could be “killed” too and rejoin his parents.
Someone from the old adventurer's past may have been blackmailing Cameron's father all those years ago and Carter thought he would give them the slip by actually joining the group he was supposed to infiltrate and destroy. Now that person has returned and is running Carter to finish the job and make him pay for his betrayal.
Someone the old adventurers defeated may have indeed come back from the past and taken revenge. They killed the adventurers and now want to slip back into the shadows and resume their pld plots, but first Morgan and now Cameron won't let them go so easily.
Any other twists and turns you can throw in that run along these lines.
I expect the final showdown where Cameron meets the mastermind behind all this will be around Avenger level 5 to 7 for him. Since I have at least 1 more cleric level, 5 levels of the short prestige class I am trying to start and all those Avenger levels there is plenty of room to pace when and where Cameron finds his clues. The final showdown will probably be around 15th character level. I know you will probably not be my DM's by then, but if you keep and build this concept a bit under your tenure and pass it to the next DM's for them to add some more the final showdown SHOULD be pretty memorable.
