Moving On (DM Dave) Wednesday September 19th, 2001 8:00:40 AM
Disposal of the enemy is completed as the group continues to get re-acquainted.
Both Nonam and Dalelad recall that there is a permanent dead-magic zone at Ciaran's temple, which will preclude direct teleportation, but the group can safely arrive just outside of the vicinity, with only a short stroll required.
Once everyone is ready, Dalelad offers to do the honors, and abruptly the scene changes as Gorgontyr is replaced by a weed-filled cobblestone parkway, with Ciaran's temple looming large.
Letters chiseled in the ancient stonework gleam in the moonlight, proclaiming Tiarnan Ciaran Darragh on the archway leading into a huge, open air temple. Somehow, the words transform in the mind of the onlooker to Lord Black Oak.
A cool fresh breeze emanates from the cavernous entrance.
Tericus Wednesday September 19th, 2001 9:18:29 AM
Pulling out his mace, Tericus prepares to enter the church.
Gareth Wednesday September 19th, 2001 11:05:30 AM
As they depart the play house, he shakes his head at the burning husks that used to house real people. "You know, folks ought to choose more carefully who they follow. Why would you serve somebody that kills you? That's just stupid...".
The warrior carries the arm of the elephant man over his shoulder and his sword in the other as they proceed. "Don't worry, my friend.", he speaks as he looks to his sword, "This isn't a club, only a trinket for our newly found ally.".
He keeps a close eye out for ambush as they make their way quickly to the church. When they arrive at the doors, he sheaths his sword and enters - always with the watchful eye.
NOTE: Addinein, add 10 more hit points. One of the potions is +15 instead of +5.
Cantos Wednesday September 19th, 2001 2:14:03 PM
Cantos walks into the temple quickly and quietly. "I just want to get some sleep, it seems like days since we had a moment's rest." Cantos then chuckles quietly to himself.
Onrad (Kim) Thursday September 20th, 2001 12:19:18 AM
The nimble warrior wets his hands from a waterskin, and washes them off as the witches turn to ash.
He readies himself for the arcane transportation. Onrad finds himself, without really thinking about it, staring at Qualde for a moment. Then he shakes his head, not wishing to be rude, and -- "Well, here we are." Using the lenses, he scrutinizes the words 'Tiarnan Ciaran Darragh'. So that his companions might share in his knowledge, he says, "That means, 'Lord Black Oak'." He wonders how he knew that.
Onrad walks into the temple.
Qualde Thursday September 20th, 2001 12:35:45 AM
Qualde limps beneath the archway, first making sure that Nonam and Dalelad precede her into their new liege's temple.
Addinein Thursday September 20th, 2001 6:32:22 AM
Feeling restored, Addinein retrieves an extra potion from Gareth. Mumbling under his breath as he grabs the potion, "Proud one she is".
Addinein joins the group as they travel to the temple. Looking for a private moment with his sister prior to entering the non-magic zone, Addinein offers the potion to her. "To aid you" is his terse comment.
Nonam Thursday September 20th, 2001 10:24:55 AM
Remembering the non-magic zone at the last moment, Nonam starts emptying the pockets of his robe. He pulls out four sacks from one pocket and starts stuffing all sorts of scrolls, potions, and knives into them. Once he's finished, he finally crosses over into the temple.
Gareth Thursday September 20th, 2001 10:59:23 AM
He nods to the dark elven man and hands him a potion (Note: Addinien, the potion is 3d8+15.).
Spying Nonam the warrior remembers he'd already removed all items from his bag of holding so there is nothin else for him to do. He enters carefully with the others.
Jus Thursday September 20th, 2001 3:35:53 PM
"Oh...," Jus muses, reflecting on Teko's departure. "I hope I wasn't the catalyst for that.Hey, I'm sure we'll see him again," Jus says, becoming happier by the moment.
Jus frowns as Qualde bows to him. His expression is mixed and somewhat unreadable, but Jus does manage to give a short nod of his head to Qualde and Addinein. Jus manages a short greeting in Drow, butchering the words with his accent, but nevertheless getting across his intent. At an attempt at casual conversation, Jus says, "Someday, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the Drow's blue blades." Feeling awkward, Jus turns to the rest of the party.
As they prepare for the transport, Jus explains his reappearance. Although Qualde was the one to ask the question, Jus addresses the entire group. "I returned only to find that our party had dissappeared. Using a few of my elvin contacts, I managed to hear rumors of Myth Drannor which eventually led me here. I also talked with a man named Ciaran Darragh, who claimed to be a god [although I've never heard of him before]. He told me that Nonam and Dalelad accepted his lordship [Really, Nonam. I never expected you to be the religious type. He asked me if I wanted to too, can you believe that?] Anyhow, we talked for a bit and he sent me here, telling me you were about to engage in battle."
"Hmmm," Jus ponders, trying to recall more of the conversation as the transport takes place. "Oh, yeah. This Ciaran guy said someone activated a magic item which went wacko and blew out most of your magic items. That sorta fits with some warning I got about spells here."
An Airy Feeling (DM Dave) Thursday September 20th, 2001 5:30:58 PM
Footfalls echo on flagstones as the group crosses over into a vast hall whose recesses are lost in darkness. The air seems to briefly sizzle, and then the group is within the no-magic boundary. The sole source of light emanates from a great oak tree growing in the center of the chamber. To the right, a major portion of the complex lies collapsed, apparently the result of the final battle that overthrew Myth Drannor long ago. In the hidden recesses above, the sounds of voices whisper all about. Dust is kicked up in the group’s wake.
Seemingly stepping from within the tree, Ciaran advances to greet you, “Welcome! You have accomplished a great thing this day, and it is time for rest. Come!”
He beckons you to a place in the back of the great hall, where an alcove shelters you from the constant winds blowing throughout the complex.
“This is a secure refuge – even the demon lords dare not enter, as my servants would quickly nullify their powers and overwhelm them.”
Gareth Thursday September 20th, 2001 5:50:07 PM
The warrior follows the self-proclaimed god to the alcove, looking around at anything he can see. "Thank you, Ciaran. A rest would be most welcome. I brought you a present. I've no idea if it is of any use to you, but I thought I'd let you make that decision yourself.". He offers the severed limb of the elephant thing to him. "What WAS that thing anyway? Did it have a name? And what was it's history - if you don't mind me asking?".
Cantos d20+3=4 d20+3=6 d20+3=16 Thursday September 20th, 2001 8:35:10 PM
Cantos walks in slowly to take in the sights, spying what appears to be a safe spot he shrugs of his back and rubs his shoulders where the straps were." Yes, What was that thing?" Cantos walks around his pack and takes a drink of water from his waterskin. " And is there anyway you can restore our magic items..I am feeling a bit naked without my items working"
(spot 4 search 6 listen 16)
Nonam Friday September 21st, 2001 1:46:43 AM
Nonam looks over at Jus, "Well, no other god ever came and helped me before. They just sat around in the sky doing whatever it is they do. But Ciaran, he showed up and talked to me. That's what I like in a god. See me all healed up? Did I drink a potion? No. I offered up a prayer of sorts to be healed, and I was. I didn't even have to use a priest as a middleman..."
Nonam trails off in silence as Ciarnan approaches. He smiles and says, "Thank you for your help today. We could not have done this alone." Then he goes and stands under the tree for a moment before heading back to the alcove.
Jus Friday September 21st, 2001 4:28:06 AM
"You do have a point there, Nonam," Jus admits. "So are you a priest now, as well?"
Jus nods his head towards Ciaran, "Good to see you again, and thanks for the teleport."
Ciaran Darragh (DM Dave) Friday September 21st, 2001 5:33:08 AM
Ciaran receives Gareth's gift with a thoughtful look, "Mind you, this was not of an actual god, but a rendering of one known as Chaugnar Faugn - a malevolent one that is best not discussed in the presence of the Mythal."
He hefts the arm casually, making it appear less weighty than it actually is, "I might make some use for this." He mutters distantly.
To Cantos, Ciaran replies, "The power that stripped your items of their dweomer is not one to be trifled with lightly. Even from a distance, I would quickly find myself ensnared while trying to retrieve that which was taken."
To Nonam, Ciaran smiles, and replies to Jus, "Actually, the teleport is a feature of the Mythal, not something I provided. Only the knowledge was given, allowing Dalelad to access that power.
"You must rest as you are able this evening, and prepare yourselves for a great struggle to come in the morning. The Lady you seek is near to death. I will give you details now, as I am able, so that you can prepare more effectively. Be mindful that the Mythal guards secrets closely for those who know how, preventing me from telling you more than a little."
Gareth Friday September 21st, 2001 11:11:59 AM
The warrior shrugs at the gods words. "Just being careful. Didn't want to leave him whole. Thought the arm might benefit you in some way. Makes me no difference what you do with it if it doesn't.". After Ciaran tells them whatever it is he is going to tell them, he puts his stuff down in the alcove, repacks, and prepares to rest and for the mission tomorrow. "So who is this Woodland Queen? Why is she being held and who is holding her?".
Nonam Friday September 21st, 2001 12:41:59 PM
Nonam continues with Jus, "You know I'm no priest. I haven't even bowed to Ciaran in worship. His gifts seem to be given quite freely. As a result I've gained a great deal of respect and as much reverence as an irreverent wizard like me can muster."
The wizard listens to Gareth and waits to hear the answer.
Ciaran Darragh (DM Dave) Friday September 21st, 2001 2:25:33 PM
"Ah, the Lady. Of her I can speak: She is a being of surpassing beauty, gentleness, and great spirit. Hers are the lands surrounding Myth Drannor, and the Lady's minions control the only variable Gate in the region - this is the only certain path to your homeland, with the destruction of the witches' portal."
"Now, how she was captured, and by who - both of those questions will have to be answered by her, as someone with an expert use of the Mythal has placed guards preventing even my divinations. However, I do know of her location - she is in fact in the ruins of the temple that Jus desired to seek out."
Gareth Friday September 21st, 2001 2:49:11 PM
The warrior nods. "You say she's near death. So when should we go? Is it better to attack at night? Do you intend to come with us as you said you were intending to do something about this yourself - or do we go this alone?". The warrior pauses midful of the fact that he's grilling one who claims to be a god and clearly has great power. "Sorry for the barrage of questions. I am simply a mission oriented person. I like to learn all I can before walking into a situation. Tends to keep you from getting killed so quickly. Anything you can share would be greatly appreciated.".
Dalelad (DM Dave) Friday September 21st, 2001 3:38:18 PM
The halfling gives Gareth a funny look, "What do you mean by asking if he's coming? He told us earlier that he would help her himself, but this task has been apportioned to us.”
Dalelad looks visibly irate.
He addresses Ciaran, "What does it take to become one of your priests?"
Jus Friday September 21st, 2001 3:38:48 PM
Jus grins at Nonam's words, "Irreverent wizard; I like that." With a mischevious grin, and hoping to stir a long still pot, Jus asks, "How would you describe Onrad?"
Jus perks up when he hears Ciaran's response. "Now I'm definitely interested in this mission. Is this Woodland Queen the same Lady you informed me of?"
Ciaran (DM Dave) Sunday September 23rd, 2001 5:27:27 PM
Ciaran responds to Jus with a vision of a woman of startling beauty, standing in a glade with a shaded pool in the background. She has light brown hair, heart-shaped face, and is clothed in white gossamer. "Yes, she is the same that we have spoken of earlier."
Cantos d20+3=16 Sunday September 23rd, 2001 8:39:39 PM
Cantos looks at each of his comrades taking them all in one at a time. "I would just like to say that it has been a honor working with all of you... your skill and dedication to each other is an inspiration to a bard such as myself. As time permits I think I shall have to compose a new piece about you." With that Cantos settles down to look at the items that he placed in his bag and listen to the conversation around him.
(spot 16 for looking at anything unusual on the items)
Ciaran (DM Dave) Monday September 24th, 2001 7:12:13 AM
In response to Dalelad, Ciaran's birthmark around his eye glows briefly, and knowledge fills the halfling's mind, "These are the rituals that are required to become one of my priests, should the day arise that you desire to choose that calling."
Addressing Gareth, Ciaran states, "The other gods are watching this upcoming task - it is more than just a mission to find your escape from Myth Drannor, and for this reason I am constrained on what aid may be rendered. However, this much I can do:"
Requesting a view of the loot gained from the battle in Gorgontyr, Ciaran rapidly identifies the items [Including ones that some of the characters have picked up separately], despite the apparent barrier to magic in this magic-dead zone:
+2 bracers of armor, +1 keen rapier, masterwork hand crossbow, 50 masterwork crossbow bolts, +1 cloak of resistance, +1 ring of protection, +1 amulet of natural armor, wand of magic missile (3rd-level caster, 50 charges), 80 gp, +3 chain shirt, +2 guisarme, bracers of health (+2), ring of protection +1, eyes of the eagle, amulet of natural armor (+1), masterwork battleaxe, 91 gp, circlet of persuasion, wand of hold person [50 charges], mighty composite short bow +2 (+2 Str bonus), bracers of armor +4, cloak of resistance +3, gloves of dexterity +2, ring of protection +1, potion of bull’s strength, potion of cure moderate wounds, potion of hiding, potion of detect thoughts, wand of summon monster II with 50 charges, +2 bracers of armor, +1 amulet of natural armor, +1 nunchaku, dagger of venom, monk’s belt, gloves of dexterity, ring of protection +1, eyes of the eagle, potion of wisdom, potion of cats’ grace, bag of tricks (gray), masterwork dagger, masterwork bracers.
[Following is a list of surviving magic items that the characters currently have - all other items were destroyed in a wild magic surge:
Addinein - All scrolls Cantos - Gloves Dalelad - potions and ring Gareth - sword, crystal orb, potions Jus - all items Nonam - robe and its contents, 1 dagger (Paunch), staff given by Ciaran Onrad - oil of acid resistance Qualde - ring Tericus - nothing
Over the next two days, the treasure needs to be divvied up, with updated character sheets to follow for the impending battle. Also, spell-casters please drop me a note on which spells will be 'memorized'.]
Tericus Monday September 24th, 2001 9:40:27 AM
"Hopefully a little rest with restore my voice enough that i can cast my spells again." Tericus says uneasily
DEH Monday September 24th, 2001 10:51:36 AM
Uh, Dave. Do you mean totally destroyed or just rendered inoperable until we leave this place?
Gareth Monday September 24th, 2001 11:02:51 AM
"Thank you for your help, Ciaran. This stuff will certainly be of great benefit to us."
The warrior pulls a list from his pack. After thinking about it and making some changes he says "OK guys, here's our current list of treasure order. I added the new members in the order they joined to the end of the list. Seemed the fairest way.... Here it is: Tericus, Jus, Onrad, Nonam, Gareth, Dalelad, Qualde, Addinien, and Cantos. Tericus?".
As the others choose their items, Gareth speaks once again to Ciaran. "It seems you have the ability to give knowledge to people without words. I am not opposed to swearing an oath of fealty to one who is good and just in their realm. But I need to understand what that commits me to. Is there any way you could just 'make me know' what it would mean for me? I do not take such things lightly. I've seen the result of such oaths taken in good faith by my family on their lands. Only to discover later all the strings that go with it. It has cost the lives of brothers and uncles. I do not wish to make the same mistake as they.".
Nonam Monday September 24th, 2001 12:11:44 PM
Nonam lays the part of the treasure that he picked up pack in the pile. "Let's get to splitting it up."
Then he turns to Jus, "How would I describe Onrad? That depends entirely on whether or nor he's holding one of his long pointy swords."
[I'd like to second DEH's question about the magic items. Permanently gone or gone in Myth Drannor? I won't lose as much as others, but still much more than I could replace.]
Cantos Monday September 24th, 2001 6:03:53 PM
Cantos places the items he was lookig at on the ground with the others and waits his turn to select whatever can help him the most.
(Yes would also like a clarification on the permanece of current magic items being lost)
The Dreaded Answer (DM Dave) Monday September 24th, 2001 8:09:29 PM [Yes, all items items affected by the wild magic surge have been permanently drained by the Mythal - gone, kaput, adios. The spell Weave Mythal (given to Nonam by Ciaran as part of the knowledge for becoming a follower) gives a one-minute reprieve in which to cast magic without such fearful effects.]
Ciaran (DM Dave) Monday September 24th, 2001 8:31:59 PM
Responding to Gareth, the god states, "I cannot provide such a vision, as there are evil days ahead, and for some, choosing me as their liege will be a great boon, but it will also bear great sorry as brother turns against brother. You will be reviled by those who spit upon Pantheon, cursing as folly any who follow a 'cult' god. I am not that which witches worship, but many in ignorance will attack you without such consideration."
Sadly he concludes, "However, I am a great friend, and will give bountiful aid to those who have chosen me, when the Wold seems darkest."
Addinein Monday September 24th, 2001 11:13:12 PM
Worried for his sister's well being, Addinein listens into the conversation.
"Do we pick one item at a time?"
Jus Tuesday September 25th, 2001 12:33:52 AM
"Yes!" Jus exclaims when Ciaran gives him the vision. "Many thanks to you again Ciaran; this is turning out well."
Taking a few minutes to lay all the new loot out, Jus lets the others start picking while he makes notes on who gets what.
OOC: Watch your email's inbox. I'll be the POC for splitting up the treasure and will send you info on it soon.
Qualde 3d8(3+4+5)+15=27 Tuesday September 25th, 2001 4:17:53 AM
Still trying to puzzle out the implications of Jus' blue knife comment, Qualde absently drains the potion vial (27hp), and follows the others into the circle of oaks. She listens to the conversation, interjecting a firm, husky, "If gods task us, we do. This Lady is elven?"
While they sort through the witches' items, the priestess asks, "Is Mythal stable for magic, outside grove? Would heal all before sleep."
Tericus Tuesday September 25th, 2001 4:50:07 AM
Dropping rings, potions, scrolls, gems and a few other items on the ground, Tericus says, "This place sucks. I should of never of come." Then he begins to poke through the treasure pile, but not with much enthusiasm(EVERYTHING I had was destroyed. I'm not very happy).
Divide and Conquer (DM Dave) Tuesday September 25th, 2001 7:31:01 AM
The group, quietly and not-so-quietly, begins to re-arm with the items acquired in recent battle. As the shock sinks in on the great loss of magic, anger vies with concern over the upcoming confrontation.
[Many thanks to John for being the POC]
Ciaran responds to Qualde's query, "She is elven, and more. I will provide a temporary respite from the whims of the Mythal, when you are ready to call upon your Lord's powers."
Nonam Tuesday September 25th, 2001 12:18:54 PM
Nonam picks up the dagger of venom and idly considers the possiblity of plunging it into his heart.
Gareth Tuesday September 25th, 2001 2:17:15 PM
The warrior thanks the being for his information and goes through what remains of his stuff, discarding anything of no value. "I can't believe its all dead. It cost me everything I owned. Years of effort - just gone...". He sits down, eats, and sleeps until Ciaran tells them it's time to go.
Cantos Tuesday September 25th, 2001 2:25:52 PM
Cantos sits up quickly and starts removing items 1 by 1 from his body until he has a pile sitting in front of him and groans," Well this isnt good" He then walks over to the pile of treasure and starts to look it over trying to figure out What would help him out the most.
Jus Tuesday September 25th, 2001 7:43:44 PM
Jus helps everyone sort through their items, remaining quiet for once.
Tericus Wednesday September 26th, 2001 5:57:52 AM
taking a break from shifting through the items, Tericus moves to the nearest wall and slumps against it. "I cant even pray to Teresalia in the accursed place." he mutters to himself "I want to go home."
Gareth Wednesday September 26th, 2001 7:09:58 AM
"Looks like the fastest way to get home is to go get this queen out. Lets prepare and get it done.".
Prepare for Battle (DM Dave) Wednesday September 26th, 2001 7:34:56 AM
The group sleeps fitfully that night, but nightmares that stalk the city leave the Three alone in their sleep.
The next morning, everyone finishes preparing [Please advise of any healing spells, etc. that you wish to cast. Everyone who had reduced ability scores regains one point. Tericus is able to speak again without emitting bubbles.] and Dalelad (following Ciaran's directions) teleports the group to the outskirts of a huge field of rubble.
After a few minutes of exertion, the group makes its way to the entrance of the remains of a spectacular temple. The only recognizable portion now standing is a tall blue onion-shaped dome.
[Spellcasters: I'm going to need those updated spell lists real quick.]
Nonam Wednesday September 26th, 2001 9:42:50 AM
Nonam rests and memorizes new spells before heading off with the group.
Gareth Wednesday September 26th, 2001 10:13:43 AM
The warrior makes sure everyone is ready and he then proceeds toward the temple area (or wherever Ciaran directed) - no need to waste time. "This place was sure awesome..."
Cantos Wednesday September 26th, 2001 2:27:29 PM
Cantos takes his much lighter bag and slides it on his back and looks at the others. "I guess it's time."
Qualde d4=4 d4=2 d4=4 Thursday September 27th, 2001 12:12:45 AM
Before leaving Ciaran, Qualde takes advantage of his temporary stabilization of the Mythal to cast Lesser Restoration on Gareth, Onrad, and herself (4,2,4, repectively, ability score damage restored). She offers healing and weapon and armour enhancement spells to any who request them.
Jus Thursday September 27th, 2001 12:44:33 AM
Jus is shocked to see Nonam and the dagger, even if Nonam was joking.
To whoever wants to listen, and even to those that don't, Jus says, "I wasn't with the party when everything was destroyed, so you may not like to hear this from me. I was told before I came here, and I was told that you were told of the danger here. But I want to remind everyone that you got out of that fight easy. Entering the Myth was an invitation to Death -- casting spells was rolling out the red carpet for him."
Trying to carefully choose his words, Jus continues, "I remember stories of the Gold Dragon's visit here where they had to carry most of the party out dead -- and that was after using several resurrection scrolls while in Myth."
Again a pause. Then, "I know it's irritating to hear the 'new guy' say it... but we have to find another way to fight. Only use spells or devices if you have to, and even then don't do it."
Jus considers saying more, but realizes he's probably not making any friends this way. Shrugging, he stands for the teleport.
Despite the surroundings and somber mood, Jus starts getting excited when he sees the temple. With a little smile and a whisper, he says "Mystra!"
Onrad (Kim) Thursday September 27th, 2001 2:58:39 AM
"Thank you, Qualde." With serious mein, he gives a bow - with reserved formality, but with sincere gratitude. "I -- could use a bit more healing, if it would not be too much trouble," he tells her.
Onrad has been quietly thinking about things. He recalls when he learned how to fight and do things without magical augmentation - though he does not mind the benefits of enchanted items. Maybe he and his friends have become too dependent upon such. He nods at what Jus has to say.
"I remember when my friends and I would fight each other with sticks. We called 'em swords, but they were just pieces of wood we'd picked up somewhere." The nimble warrior gets a faraway look in his eyes. "We'd kill ogres, or orcs, or 'bad guys' or even giants or a dragon or two - at least in our minds. In our childish ways, we learned to fight. I remember a new guy moved near us, and joined in our fights. One time his stick just raked my belly, deep. Fell down straight to the ground right then, holding myself for some time. Learned from that moment of agony how to guard my belly. Learned from countless bruises how to dodge. Pain is a sharp teacher."
He looks at his friends. "Sure, we've lost a lot. But we've gained some back, too. And had success. Anyway, our minds are our best weapons, right?" He glances at his friends. Coming from nostalgia back to the present, the hint of a smile plays around his lips. "Of course, I can't speak for you on that, Gareth." He grins and ducks.
Final Preparations (DM Dave) Thursday September 27th, 2001 6:33:45 AM
The Three continue to make preparations, and discuss their situation.
[Gang, if possible, we need to make the next step tomorrow. Thanks to those of you who have already sent updated information. John, how are things coming on the treasure-splitting?]
Dalelad (DM Dave) Thursday September 27th, 2001 6:37:27 AM
"Boy, I must be dense," states the halfling as the conversation takes a serious turn. "I didn't realize everyone was so bummed out. Guess it just comes from dropping off the natural high of winning such a big battle. Imagine telling our grandchildren about a fight with a god in the mythical city of Drannor!"
When the group arrives at the ruins, Dalelad offers to go ahead and scout the way, "Even though I'm thinking about the priesthood doesn't mean I've lost my stealthiness."
Gareth Thursday September 27th, 2001 10:47:50 AM
The warrior looks around and says "We fought most of that last battle with mostly brute force - and brains (with a side glance to Onrad). I'm really hoping this time it isn't a god or something that's holding this queen. If not I like our chances.". He pulls out his sword and admires it. "And of course, we've not lost ALL our items. If I had to choose one I still have it. And who knows, I suspect these guys will have stuff we can get too. Maybe even some cash we can use to rebuild. Let's go find out...".
Nonam Thursday September 27th, 2001 11:21:37 AM
Nonam looks at Jus and rolls his eyes, "If you'd sworn to Ciaran you would have learned how to control the mythal to some extent thereby stopping most of those problems. Most of my mistakes were made prior to that time. Now, I can cast my lower level spells without worry. And if I hadn't cast the more dangerous spells when fighting that elephantine monstrosity none of us would be here right now. The low level ones didn't work against him, and most of you were bouncing about in the doorway while he was out trying to kill us. Now, for those that didn't swear, I can weave the mythal and make it safe before any of you do any more healing spells. And Jus, no amount of 'I told you so' is going to make any of us any happier about the way things have been going. The possibilty that all our items could be destroyed never occured to me. Did it occur to you Tericus?"
Cantos Thursday September 27th, 2001 5:08:31 PM
Cantos stands and slides on his pack. "I was just frustrated last night, for me everything I had worked so hard for was destroyed... with the exception of one pair of gloves, it's hard to see a lifetime of possessions go from helpful to so much dead weight... especially when you dont have a copper to your name. I started out fresh and naked once -- I guess I shall do it again." With that Cantos looks at Jus. "Mister these guys know you and respect you so I will refrain from any type of retort. However it's easy to look at the pasture without having to worry about the bull."
Jus Friday September 28th, 2001 2:46:29 AM
Jus nods at both Nonam's and Cantos' comments; he was expecting someone to say something along those lines. However, something in Cantos' words gives him pause.
Walking over to Cantos and offering his hand, Jus says, "I'm Jus, a member of the party that has been gone for a few days. You are right that I'm not in a position to talk. It's easy to say that our lives are worth more than our items when I've not lost anything."
Jus steps to the side and begins to go through his pack and his clothes, laying items out before him. "Please, everyone put the items you've just selected back into this pile. For what I hope are obvious reasons, I'd like to have a turn to choose this time."
Jus takes all the items found on the witches and puts them together once again. This time, however, all of Jus' magic items are mixed within.
OOC: I'll send another email to everyone in a few minutes. Please respond as soon as you can so we can move on.
Qualde 4d8(4+8+5+6)+11=34 4d8(5+6+8)+11=30 Friday September 28th, 2001 3:07:51 AM
Faced with Onrad's formality, Qualde gives him a slow, sultry smile. "Thank Domi and Caeroldra," she admonishes. "And our host." She casts Cure Critical Wounds on him (34hp, GMW burnt), then prays for healing for herself (30hp, CSW).
"More tools for us than force and brains and toys." The drow hefts her morningstar in illustration, using it to point to the ground at her feet, to the glowing sky overhead. "Earth, air, light -- even up and down. Any is tool, if right place, right use."
Qualde's pale green eyes light with passion, and her smokey voice deepens further. "Biggest tool is goal. Gives direction, gives focus. Focus on goal: free Lady and get out. If we want enough, we get."
Tericus (sam) Friday September 28th, 2001 9:43:34 AM
OOC: Hello. sorry this is out of character, but ive has some serious personal problems the last couple of days and they dont look like they are going away until monday, so ill be unable to post until then. sorry for the inconvience
Gareth Friday September 28th, 2001 11:09:25 AM
"Jus, your gesture is well taken but please, retrieve your stuff. We will need you full strength and comfortable with your weapondry. Lessening yourself is not going to improve our chances. Nobody faults you for not losing and nobody faults you for their loss. It wasn't your fault. Besides, I am pleased with my choices so far.".
Nonam Friday September 28th, 2001 11:43:27 AM
Nonam frowns as Jus empties his items out, "I appreciate the gesture, but I for one won't take any of your gear. You always pick out junk anyway." The wizard sits back and surveys the group for a second before nodding at Qualde, "She's right. This is merely a hardship, but one that we can over come. It's not much worse than when we fought those three chimeras. This might even be better. No one's dead yet. Also if push comes to shove, there's always the World Serpent Inn."
Addinein Friday September 28th, 2001 2:12:04 PM
(ooc odd happenings with my e-mail for the last few days. Something is up with myrealbox, I'm not recieving mail, or being allowed to login. Any e-mail since Tues, can it be redirected to solutions-now@home.com?! I apologize for inconvience. I"m hoping they'll be back online shortly)
Dalelad (DM Dave) Friday September 28th, 2001 3:48:14 PM
The halfling eagerly begins pawing through Jus' belongings. "Oooh, cool, what's this do?" he asks, holding up a diamond-tipped staff. Deciding it's a bit too unwielding for his small frame, he quickly discards it and continues burrowing into the mess. He quickly grabs up the bracers, "Hey, how about these?"
Once the treasure is divided, he heads over and scouts out the entryway, taking Gareth's lack of response as a silent 'Yes'.
Gareth Friday September 28th, 2001 3:53:34 PM
The warrior nods to the halfling - and follows.
Jus Friday September 28th, 2001 3:54:41 PM
"Thanks for the sentiment, guys, but this isn't time for noble gestures. And this isn't some prideful gesture of mine, either; this is about life and death. If we have a better chance of surviving by splitting up our belongings, then let's do it!"
Stepping aside to allow Dalelad rummage, Jus answers, "That's a Staff of Frost. Someone that can cast that Myth Wierd, or whatever, should use that. And Nonam should take the Spellbook with Wish -- I can't cast it yet, and it may be useful in the future to heal everyone to full strength."
Looking around, Jus makes one last offer, "Really, if there's anything you want that'll give us a better chance of surviving, take it!"
Addinein Sunday September 30th, 2001 1:14:48 PM
(going to try to make up some)
With the answer to Qualde about being able to stabilize, " Does this stabilize attend to all magic, or just her type of magic?"
With the offer of Jus's equipment, "This would of course not be a on a permanent basis. It's tactically sound for us to redistribute our gear as appropriate. Once we are out of this area, we can discuss who actually keeps what."
Poking about the treasure pile there's not much that attracts Addinein's eye.
"Life is never easy. You just learn to deal with what you've been given. Then the day comes that you meet an enemy that is better than you, and life is done."
If Addinien gets the word that regular magic is available, "I have spells to help the warriors here. LIke the wand of his (pointing to Tericus), and they last for 5 hours."
Dalelad (DM Dave) Sunday September 30th, 2001 5:30:51 PM
While everyone is hashing out the treasure, Dalelad slips through the rubble, and checks out what lies ahead.
After a minute, he comes back to report, "The place doesn't look too stable, but should probably hold up okay...I don't know, I guess ask a dwarf if you want an expert opinion on if the it might collapse. Anyways, there's a hall that slopes downward pretty steep-like. Goes, oh, I guess for a hundred feet or so." He demonstrates, with his big, hairy, smelly feet.
"Then, it opens out into a big chamber of some sort...I didn't poke around, because I felt the hairs on the backs of my, oh nevermind, I just felt like it was dangerous, know whaddya mean? This chamber is kinda dome shaped, with all sorts of small rocks and human-like bones scattered everywhere, even some bones crammed up in the walls, like they're holding the place up. It was pretty dark, with a little light glow coming from the middle of the ceiling. Couldn't tell, but I think there might be an opening up there. Didn't see any other ways out. 'course, like I said, I only glanced."
Cantos Sunday September 30th, 2001 8:03:35 PM
Cantos looks at Jus..."hmmm well said and well met." He extends his hand to Jus. "As to your items thanks but no..you need your items as much as we felt we needed ours...if you are not comfortable in your gear you will be as unbalanced as the rest of us. I for one will not choose from your items but thanks for offering."
Onrad (Kim) Monday October 1st, 2001 2:50:54 AM
"They then have my thanks," Onrad replies to Qualde, as she brings him quite a bit closer to full health.
The limber fighter looks over the assembled magic and such. "It seems it's a day for gratitude. Thank you for sharing your things with us, Jus. I concur with Addinein. I'll consider this a borrowing of the items you are offering." He indicates interest in several things from the common booty, and a few of Jus' items.
Tericus Monday October 1st, 2001 6:52:11 AM
Shaking his head, Tericus stands up and smooths out his robes. "Well, we're already here, so let's go do what we are supposed to do."
Gareth Monday October 1st, 2001 10:58:36 AM
The warrior listens to Dalelad's description and says "Sounds like we're expected yet again. Oh well, guess I'll take the brunt of the first attack again.". He waits for everyone to get their gear sorted out and in line. Once this is accomplished he looks to everyone with resolve and says "Let's go.".
Nonam Monday October 1st, 2001 12:00:25 PM
As Nonam sifts through the gear, he points out, "I can cast some spells that will help us out a bit. I memorized the strength spell a few times this go round. I can cast a strong version here, and it will last most of the day. I can also enchant two blades for 11 hours. I can give something a keen edge for just under two hours. Someone else should carry around this Staff of Battle. I was barely able to keep from thumping myself in the head with it. It's a staff for a warrior, not a wizard. And Jus, I can't cast wish yet either. Maybe in a week or two, but not quite yet. I've also got a fairly potent jar of poison if someone wants to coat a blade with it. And I have a small magic shop's worth of potions and scrolls. Hmm... let's see. Here's an oil of impact. An oil of fiery burning. Oil of slipperiness. Who wants what?"
While waiting for answers, Nonam manipulates the mythal to ensure the safety of his spells and increases their effect effect (as per his secret knowledge) and casts Bull's Strength on Gareth, Onrad, and Addinien. (+5 str for each/11 hours). Then he casts Cat's Grace on himself (+5 dex). Then he pauses to ask, "Now, who needs those magic weapons? And who wants this staff? I'll tell you how to use it."
"I can cast the weave mythal spell three times. We should save one for the healing process after the fight. I'll cast one on Jus and one on one of the clerics - Tericus or Qualde - at the beginning of the fight. The fields should move with them but will only last a minute. So use the big spells and items like the staff of frost first. Once they're gone we'll have to rely on the more mundane. No mistakes this time."
"And before we go into this battle, I'm going to drink my last potion of double casting along with a potion of intelligence. When I do and after I do, you had better all stay away from me. There's no telling what it will do here. Once they are really starting to work, I'll be very likely to fry anything in sight."
Cantos Monday October 1st, 2001 1:08:53 PM
Cantos looks around at his comrades and shakes his head. He limbers up his arm and puts his bow with arrow nocked in the other. "I wouldn't mind having my arrows get that bonus Nonam if you can."
Gareth (Bull's Strength +5) Monday October 1st, 2001 1:14:30 PM
The warrior smiles at Nonam's comments about him going crazy during battle. "OK Nonam, I'll be glad to have my weapon be keen. I think that best as each time I hit I do more damage - and that will allow me to kill more quickly. Also, it would be useful for my short sword here to be reenchanted as it lost its power recently - but only if somebody else doesn't need it. I'm also certainly not opposed to poisoning these jokers. They sure don't seem to mind poisoning us." The warrior coats both his weapons with poison - but only after others have taken what they want. "I would say if there is not enough to go around that it be best that I take the magic allowing more physical damage and the others take the stuff that helps them bring down their opponents faster by other means."
Gareth (Bull's Strength +5) Monday October 1st, 2001 1:18:25 PM
"One other thing, I have 2 potions of bull's strength and 10 healing potions should anyone need any. I think distributing them among everyone would be a good idea." The warrior hands one to each party member who wants one. (let me know: 3d8+15 each)
Addinein Monday October 1st, 2001 1:44:38 PM
"Did I understand your common right? The 'Weave Mythal' spell you've recently learned, only lets one person at a time cast? It's not an area affect spell working for those that are allies? If that is the case, I may have jinxed us unnecessarily. I had understood that the Weave Mythal was something that all spell casters could benefit from."
The Weave of Magics (DM Dave) Monday October 1st, 2001 5:38:05 PM
Final preparations are made as the group readies for the upcoming battle.
[I've only received spell-lists from two players - once the battle is joined, any who have not responded will be stuck with the spells memorized the previous day, less any spells already cast.]
Qualde Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 12:29:13 AM
Qualde frowns while rearranging her new equipment. "No poison for me. Nonam, serve best purpose to Weave for Tericus. Not best fighter, I, but can help. Will enchant my weapon?" She holds out her morningstar. "Asked Domi for spells to enchant weapons and armor. Best I not cast them, though."
She accepts a Bull's Strength potion from Gareth and holds it up. "Will work without weave?"
Once preparations are complete, the priestess lines up beside her brother for the descent into the unstable hall.
"Nonam, if you Weave for one person, works only for his spells? What if I try heal him? Or heal you?"
Onrad (Bull's Strength +5) (Kim) Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 1:05:21 AM
"Thank you, Nonam," he says as he feels his muscles ripple, his sinews tighten. Yet again the recipient of others' kindness, Onrad accepts one of Gareth's healing potions, tucking it into a pouch.
He takes several minutes as his friends and companions prepare to run through his own regimen of stretching. As he warms up, his forehead produces a slight sheen of perspiration. He works with his weapons (both old and new), adjusting, tinkering with his dexterity-based weapons style.
Cave of Debris (DM Dave) Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 8:13:33 AM
With Gareth's leave, the group heads down into the gloom. After a few cautious moments, our heroes arrive at the opening to the cavernous room described earlier by Dalelad.
All is pretty much as the halfling had seen it earlier, though perhaps not so intimidating, now that everyone is together viewing the same scene: Apparently this inner room of Mystera's temple barely withstood the ravages of the Fall of Myth Drannor. Chunks of ceiling stone lie strewn about the floor, intermingled with countless bones. More bones protude from crevices in the curved walls that arch overhead, with an apparent opening some 40 feet above. It is from here that a ghostly yellowish light emanates, giving a sickly hue to everything. The floor spans some 70 or more feet across.
Dalelad (DM Dave) d20+20=30 Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 8:21:04 AM
Dalelad offers, "I can scale the wall and drop a rope down for us to get up there." He points to the opening in the ceiling.
He attempts the climb if given the nod.
Addinein (Bull strength +5, Endurance +4, Cat's grace +3) d4+1=3 d4+1=4 d4+1=5 d4+1=2 d4+1=3 Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 9:23:20 AM
(sorry for late post) (I've received no update on treasure distribution)
Prior to leaving, not knowing who wants what. Addinein casts Endurance on Gareth (+3 con) and himself (+4) and his sister (+5) and Onrad (+2). Running out of spells, he then casts cat's grace on himself (+3 dex).
Looking around the temple, Addinein mutters, "Looks like's it's lucky to be standing."
Tericus 3d8(4+6+2)+15=27 Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 9:28:20 AM
"I still have a few nasty surprises I can do, so I'll take the mythral weave Nonam." Tericus says. Then he takes one of the healing potions that Gareth offers and drinks it (heals 27 pts).
Gareth (Bull's Strength +5, Endurance +3, Keen Weapon) Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 10:53:56 AM
Before accepting the spell of Addinien, the warrior looks to Nonam for assurance that this is going to work. Once the all clear is given he takes it graciously. If nobody else speaks up, he also takes the keen weapon and gets both swords coated with poison (i.e. Looks like Qualde and Cantos get the enchantment. Gareth gets keen weapon and poison - if nobody else speaks up Gareth will take every advantage he can get, assuming nobody else want them.) He gives Qualde the potion of Bull's strength and tells her she can use any time. He also gives Tericus and Onrad a healing potion, shakes his head as nobody else seems to want one and puts them away.
As they enter the temple, the warrior stands ready to fight. He nods to Dalelad to set the rope. He also looks around with his new eye to see if he can spot anything 'interesting' anywhere in the temple.
Nonam (Cat's Grace +5) Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 11:12:48 AM
Nonam says, "The Weave Mythal spell may be centered on an area with a 30' radius, or it may be cast on a specific person for their use. I thought that might be more useful in a fight since it would allow for mobility. Perhaps you would all prefer it cast in one area? Let me know before I do it."
The wizard then hands Onrad a potion of lesser restoration, "Drink this. You still look a little pink around the gills."
"Okay, now I'll enchant Qualde's club thingy and Cantos' arrows... Jus, you want to throw some arrows in here? I can get 50 at a time." Then he casts Greater Magic Weapon, once from memory and once from scroll. Items get a +3 bonus for 11 hours.
"Gareth, let's put Keen Edge on your sword." He casts Keen Edge off a scroll. "Don't cut yourself. You'll have about 2 hours with that. It may run out, but it's safer to cast it now."
Then the wizard produces his jar of poison. "This is a poison that thieves place on doorknobs and such. It will immediately soak through the skin and into the bloodstream. There is enough here to coat five weapons. Once you hit your target, the poison will be gone. Be careful with it. If you drip it on yourself, you'll be dead before the fight starts. I have four neutralize poison potions. If you take the poison, take a potion. And gang, I still haven't used any of my healing potions. If you need one, let me know."
Once everything is taken care of, Nonam exits the waiting area with the group and moves to the cavern. He nods at Daledad, "Climb on up. I'll catch you if you fall."
[Poison = Contact Thieves Poison. 5 applications. Effect = death (save for 25 points damage). Onset=1 minute. - This was type E poison in 2E rules. Closest 3E equivalent is Black Lotus Extract (see chart DMG3 p80). I'll let the estimable Mr. Hill decide if it keeps its original properties or switches to the new type. Either way, it's quite deadly.]
Gareth Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 2:14:15 PM
The warrior contributes any additional arrows needed to make 50 and lets the archers have them as he had several +3, +2, and +1 arrows now unmagicked (but only if needed).
Addinein Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 6:03:23 PM
Taking up the offer of healing potions, Addinein takes at least one from Gareth, and one from Nonam.
Jus Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 8:07:05 PM
While adding many of his arrows to Cantos' to gain the +3 benefit, Jus asks, "Are we in one of those Weave Mythal areas now? I'd like to cast a few spells in preparation, but only if it is safe."
Post modified after player clarified situation with DM
Jus talks with Ciaran for several minutes while everyone is preparing to leave. Jus' voice rises in emotion several times during the conversation, while Ciaran continues to reply in calm, even tones. When their talk is finished, Jus wipes his sweaty palms on his shirt, in a futile attempt to dry them. Whatever Jus discussed was very trying for him, although, strangely, he seems a bit more confident now.
Finishing his preparations, Jus casts a succession of spells upon himself (Endurance, Cat's Grace, Bull's Strength, Mage Armor, Fly, Stoneskin, Shield). "If someone is interested in better defense, I have another Mage Armor memorized. Also, if one of you fighters would like, I can Enlarge you. This will give you much greater strength, but much greater size as well -- so I suggest we wait to cast it until we know the size of our arena."
Stepping aside with Nonam, Jus confides, "You can cast your Weave Mythal upon someone else when needed. I'm... able to do the same now."
Cantos 2d8(8+4)+11=23 d4+1=4 Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 8:29:40 PM
Cantos smiles as he puts on his new items and adjusts his weapons." I could use that weave Mythal spell as well to get ready before we get started that way I can help out more" If Nonam cast then Cantos will cast Cure Moderate wounds on himself, followed by Mage Armor, Expeditious Retreat, Bull Strength, Haste,Displacement and See Invisible on himeself if not he will go in as is.
Quick Clarification (DM Dave) Tuesday October 2nd, 2001 9:38:26 PM I know I'm making it a little confusing, since we're basically addressing three different time periods here at once: 1. The minute prior to the group's departure from Ciaran's temple, when Ciaran provide a Wild-Magic-free zone in which to cast magic; 2. The moments after the group teleports to the ruins of Mystra's temple; 3. The group entering into the ruined chamber.
It is assumed that all magics used do so without dire consequences, as most are being performed in Ciaran's temple.
Qualde (Endurance +5, GMW +3, BS +2) d4+1=2 Wednesday October 3rd, 2001 3:13:52 AM
Before leaving, Qualde drains the Bull's Strength potion (+2), then accepts her weapon from Nonam with a nod.
As Dalelad ascends the domed wall, she trails him across the cavern's floor, ready to catch should the halfling lose his hold on the unstable surface. Idly, she asks, "How old, bones? Teeth marks on them?"
Onrad (Endurance +2, BS +5, Mage Armor) (Kim) d4=2 Wednesday October 3rd, 2001 4:16:44 AM
Onrad swallows Noman's potion of lesser restoration, fully bringing his strength back (not to mention the +5 from bull's strength).
At the battered temple, he tries to discern the source of the ghostly yellowish light. ---- [Modified following Jus' modified post above]. "Sure, Jus, I'll take the mage armor spell."
Time Merge (DM Dave) Wednesday October 3rd, 2001 6:47:46 AM [With today's post, we are now fully in the 'present' situation at the ruined temple of Mystra]
Dalelad successfully begins his ascent, when the bones Qualde is wondering about spring together into a familiar groups, forming an army of undead. Many of the bones wedged in the walls being scaled by the halfling also pry themselves loss, causing a small shower of stones [Dalelad to make DC check to maintain position on wall].
The heroes get the first action as they face a crowded field of 39 Skeletons.
Dalelad (DM Dave) d20+20=31 d20+20=39 Wednesday October 3rd, 2001 6:53:40 AM
Halfway up the wall, the halfling manages to cling to the overhang, despite the break-up. Briefly, he considers dropping back down to join in the combat, but decides it's more important to make it to the top.
He continues working his way up the dome, using rope and pitons to secure himself.
Nonam d20+7=24 d6+3=7 Wednesday October 3rd, 2001 8:56:02 AM
Not quite convinced that even this many skeletons constitute a deadly peril, Nonam advances on the nearest bone man (the one up and to the right between the two boulders) and smacks it with the Staff of Battle. (AC 24, for a whopping 7 pts dmg). He calls out, "Maybe we can do this without magic. Stay between the piles of rubble, so they can't gang up on you."
Tericus d20+2=16 2d6(3+3)+12=18 Wednesday October 3rd, 2001 9:56:32 AM
Seeing the skeletons form up in ranks, Tericus holds up his flute and yells "IN THE NAME OF TERESALIA I BANISH YOU!!!" (Attempt to turn undead, I'm able to turn 12 hd monsters or less, or destroy 6 hd monsters or less. I'm able to turn or destroy a total of 18 hds.)
Gareth (Bull's Strength +5, Endurance +3, Keen Weapon) d20+11=31 d20+11=23 d20=9 d20=15 Wednesday October 3rd, 2001 11:38:03 AM
The warrior frowns at the sight of the skeletons. "Jus, I could use that enlarge spell of yours now.". Not wanting to waste his poison on undead, he picks up the largest stone he can muster and launches it at the nearest skeleton. He then does it again. (Str check 31 & 23, Hit AC 9+26.5=35.5 & 15+21.5=36.5, for ? + 16.5 DMG& ? + 16.5 DMG)

Cantos looks around," Kinda reminds me when I was still traveling with my master, but considering the place I think this is no joke" Cantos will hold his action watching the Flank of Jus in front of him if anything tries to attack there he will hit it. Cantos starts looking around for anything hidden.

Qualde (Endurance +5, GMW +3, BS +2) d20+3=18 2d6(6+1)+14=21 Wednesday October 3rd, 2001 2:12:47 PM
The priestess throws back her hood, revealing her white topknot and the twin symbols gleaming at her brow. "Flee before my lord Domi's might!" she cries in Drow. "Tremble in the wash of Caeroldra's light!" (turns up to 21 total hit dice of undead of 13 hit dice or less)
Qualde continues to pace Dalelad's progress, as much as the rubble-strewn floor will permit without coming too close (10') to fleeing skeletons.
Onrad (Endurance +2, BS +5, Mage Armor, Str 18 +4; Dex 23 +6; Con 16 +3) (Kim) d20+19=37 d20+14=22 d20+9=22 d20+19=38 d6+9=10 d6+9=15 d6+9=10 d6+9=11 d20+9=24 d6+9=13 Thursday October 4th, 2001 4:05:32 AM
Onrad realizes a rapier is not the weapon of choice for battling skeletons. But, he'll try and make do. [OOC: A rapier can't crit a skeleton, can it? If so, his first attack did crit- nat 18, nat 19; as well as his third attack- nat 13, nat 15. If not...]
He steps forward to engage the skeleton ahead and to his left, wanting to leave plenty of room for Gareth.
He starts with the new +1 keen rapier (crit range for Onrad 12-20/x2), doing 10/2 (or 21/2 if crit applies); 15/2; 10/2 (or 23/2 if crit applies) damage to the skeleton. [No Monster Manual at hand - assume puncturing weapon does 1/2 to 3e skeletons? If no crit, and damage is halved: 18 hp damage. If crit, 30 hp. Looking forward to clarification.]

As Tericus and Qualde begin their tirades against the skeletons, Jus gives an enthusiastic war cry. "Go for it, Clerics! Woohoo!" With a quick nod towards Gareth, Jus exclaims, "Not yet, Gareth! I don't want to see you stuck in that hole up above!"
With incredible speed and skill, Jus slips his sword back into its sheath on his back and pulls a Sap and Hammer from the sides of his backpack[Quick Draw; free actions].
In the same motion, Jus takes a 5' step to the northeast, trying to draw both of the skeletons before him, and puts his full attention into the task of dismantling these bones. (AC-Hit:14/14/21; possible damage:8/3/4, using blunt weapons)
OOC: as per a previous discussion with DM, Jus cast Keen Weapon on his arrows and 15 others, starting with Cantos'. Also, how many of Jus' arrows received Nonam's +3 GMW (ie: how many arrows did Cantos get GMWed)?
Heroes' Actions Round 1 (DM Dave) d20+3=23 Thursday October 4th, 2001 7:03:22 AM
Dalelad successfully continues his back-bending ascent as the battle ensues.
Nonam's blow shatters the skeleton in a shower of slivers.
Tericus' Turning is stymied, and the priest detects higher levels of negative energy bolstering these undead [No effect of Turning this round].
Heaving large slabs of stone, Gareth smashes two other skeletons into dust.
Cantos holds his action and scans the room, but sees little of interest - this place has been pretty well scavanged at some point in the past. Even the skeletons look poor.
Qualde has more success in overcoming the negative energy, and red pin-pricks of light wink out of the eyesockets of numerous skeletons as they collapse to the floor in heaps [21 of the enemy dispatched].
Onrad easily destroys his opponent with a flurry of blows, although it is immediately obvious that the damage is diminished [Undead are immune to criticals, and skeletons only take half-damage from slashing or piercing weapons].
Jus smacks down another skeletons in a display of quickness [Nonam managed to take out the other of Jus' targets].
Addinien maintains a defensive position.
I Spy Something....Tasty (DM Dave) Thursday October 4th, 2001 7:24:31 AM
Cantos and Onrad both finally discern the source of the pearly-yellow light, as it emerges from the opening in the ceiling of the room - a transluscent beholder!
It gazes down upon the party with its huge eye, gnashing its maw in fury as it sights the group. Three of its smaller eyestalks take an interest in Dalelad's adventure on the ceiling.

Three eye-beams fire at Dalelad, all hitting their mark. The thief screams as he lets loose of the facing and falls, but the grapple lines arrest his descent, leaving him dangling 25 feet above Qualde's head. From his movements, it appears he's broken some bones, and his left arm hangs uselessly pointing downward toward the dark elf.
Everyone in the room, upon seeing the newcomer, feels a wave of negative energy poor over him/her [Must make a single (all inclusive) Fortitude check (remember no magic bonuses available) to avoid the following: d4 Str loss, d4 Dex loss, d4 Con loss, d4 Chr loss, 2d10 hit point dmg].
The remaining skeletons, apparently by some unheard command, stand back.
Addinein (BS, CG, END (surpressed)) d20+9=16 d20+13=33 d20+13=21 d4=2 d4=3 Thursday October 4th, 2001 8:50:54 AM
(assumed dc 15)(ooc aack forgot to drop the bonus from endurance (+2) so roll is 14, change post accordingly, if failed)
Hearing Dalelad scream, Addinein looks up to see what has hurt him.
Spotting the beholder, Addinein feels the negative energy wash over him, causing him to shiver, as he ignores the effects.
Seeing the Beholder is currently out of Range for any hand-hand stuff, Addinein pulls out his hand crossbow and fires a shot at the Beholder. (crit hit, follow up crit hits ac 21) damage=2+1(mw) +3
Nonam d20+6=24 Thursday October 4th, 2001 9:29:27 AM
(Don't know what DC we need to make, but if 24 doesn't make it, then we're all going to die anyway. Also, are the permanent spell effects on Nonam cancelled?)
Crouching down behind the boulder so that it's between him and the beholder, Nonam bellows, "Why is it that everything else here can use magic?!" Hunkering down, he casts weave mythal in an area of effect centered near Jus. "Tericus, get a little nearer to Jus. I've woven the mythal."
While speaking, Nonam reaches into one of his pockets and haphaszardly tosses a pair of scrolls toward Jus. "Read one of those green fireball scrolls. Unless, you have something better."
(green fireball = 18 die empowered fireball (given to Nonam by Fireball))
Tericus d20+10=22 10d6(4+5+6+2+5+4+3+1+2+1)=33 Thursday October 4th, 2001 9:58:16 AM
making his fortitude check(i assume a 22 makes it), Tericus moves near Jus just as Noonan casts the Mythral spell. once there he chants a powerful incantation and sheets of flames roar all around the beholder(flame strike for 33 pts)
Gareth (*Bull's Strength +5, *Endurance +3, *Keen Weapon) d20+9=28 d20=18 d20=18 d20+7=25 d20+7=17 Thursday October 4th, 2001 11:42:24 AM
The warrior frowns as he sees the new threat. "I knew this was looking too easy...". As the skeletons fall back, he feels and resists the effects of the evil wash of energy (DC 28).
He decides to continue to pummel the skeletons with boulders since he cannot reach the glowing ball. "Can any of you guys cast fly on me? I can't hurt much it unless I can close. Spread out so that thing can't hit us all at once!". He launches yet 2 more boulders as he moves toward the 3 skeletons to the left as he moves past Onrad. (Str check 25 and 17 if necessary, hit AC 44 & 40 for ?+15&?+15 DMG).
Clarifications (DM Dave) Thursday October 4th, 2001 12:24:34 PM Grrrrr....I knew I was forgetting something. The DC is 18. And, I forgot to confirm that Nonam's permancy vision has been removed.
Finally, I'm assuming that the characters are continuing to try to use magic, as if they didn't know that the beholder's central eye is emitting an anti-magic beam (noting Nonam's and Tericus' posts).
Cantos (too many spells being shutdown) d20+7=8 d20+7=16 d20+7=17 d20+11=17 d20+6=8 d20+11=15 Thursday October 4th, 2001 7:47:28 PM
Cantos fails his roll (used 2 hero points sheesh) and feels the strength drain from him. He fires three arrows at the beholder hitting absolutely nothing.
Onrad draws his bow, and fires off three arrows (AC 24; 20; 11) for 2 and 3 hp damage to the Eye.
Sorry - no time tonight.
Qualde (Endurance +5, GMW +3, BS +2, suppressed?) d20+9=20 d20+3=16 d20+3=23 2d6(2+4)+14=20 Friday October 5th, 2001 3:52:12 AM
Though unnerved by the strange, transluscent appearance of the beholder, Qualde refuses to let it affect her (Fort=20). "Front eye blocks magic. Split up in two groups; can only look at one."
Not having any missile weapons, the priestess moves 20ft north and tests her own theory by attempting to turn the remaining undead. "By Domi and Caeroldra, disperse, unclean things!" (Turn up to 20 total hit dice, turn check result of 23 - used granted power of desire to reroll it.)
"Onrad," she calls. "How high can jump if I throw hard?"

Addinein's bolt flies true; passing harmlessly through the beholder as if it weren't there.
[Results of drain on Addinein: Str loss 1; Dex loss 4 (reduce AC, too); Con loss 2 (and 11 hit points); Chr loss 3; hit point loss of 13]
Tericus spell fails to go off [Due to Anti-magic field].
Gareth smashes two more skeletons into dust, both snapping with dry-brittle sounds.
Cantos, resisting mightily, still is overcome by the negative energy [Str loss 2; Dex loss 3(reduce AC, too); Con loss 3 (and 11 hit points); Chr loss 4; hit point loss of 9].
As with Addinein, Onrad's quarrels fly harmlessly through the apparition.
Qualde blasts the remaining undead into dust.
Dalelad [Makes Fortitude check], briefly shaken, is torn by momentary indecision - 'Should I stay up here, near this thing, or should I drop down with the rest of the group?' - decides to try climbing back up the ceiling and find some type of cover, hoping to make it inside the hole. He manages to drag himself back up to the ceiling.
Jus resists the effects of the drain [Rolled '27'].

Spinning in place, the Beholder brings all of its smaller eyes to bear on the group, aiming its big eye up into the opening in the ceiling above [All non-instantaneous spells/magic go back into effect as the anti-magic field is removed].
Beams blast as follows:
One eyebeam slams into Dalelad, dislodging him completely and causing him to plummet to the floor. However, a Feather Fall kicks in, gently depositing the halfling [Received 2 points of blast damage].
2nd eyebeam hits Cantos [Make Will check DC 18 to avoid running away in Fear].
3rd eyebeam barely misses Gareth.
4th beam bathes Qualde in a ray of darkness [Make Fort check DC 18 or loose 5 points due to negative energy drain. Otherwise, Qualde sustains 2 points of damage][/i].
5th beam targets Tericus, missing.
6th beam strikes Qualde [Looses four levels, as per the Enervation spell on page 199 of PHB].
7th beam hits Dalelad, shriveling his other arm.
8th beam connects with Tericus, breaking bones [Make Fortitude save DC 18 to only take 11 points of damage and reducing movement to half rate, otherwise receive 13 points of damage this round and 4 points next as broken bones continue to do internal damage].
9th beam hits Gareth, eating the flesh away from bone [DC 18 Reflex check to only take 3 points of damage, otherwise take 8 points of damage and make Fort check to avoid literal loss of face, becoming temporarily blinded and deafened as the flesh slogs off (takes 2d4 rounds to clear enough to fight effectively - meanwhile suffer -6 on all actions.)].
10th beam remains unused.
Nonam d20+11=31 d20+11=22 Friday October 5th, 2001 8:39:57 AM
Nonam moves over by Jus and Tericus. Knowing that the weave mythal should still be in place, Nonam opens up the spell book he got from Jus and casts Power Word Blind onto the beholder. (rolled a 20, hit SR 31) (caster level check=22)
When he's finished, he crouches back down behind a rock just in cast the thing can still see.
Dalelad (DM Dave) Friday October 5th, 2001 8:44:56 AM
Taking a cue from Nonam, Dalelad heads to the nearest pile of rubble, realizing he's only good for a moving target at the moment. He gingerly squats, trying to avoid jarring any more broken bones.
Gareth (Bull's Strength +5, Endurance +3, Keen Weapon) d20+6=24 d20+20=23 d20+3=8 Friday October 5th, 2001 11:16:35 AM
The warrior dodges the beam so it avoids a direct hit on his face. He comes about and decides it's time to practice his aim. He looks for cover as he moves North and draws his bow. If he has time he fires one arrow at the thing - not noticing that Addinien's bolt went through the thing [Hit AC 23 for 8 DMG] (Rolled d20 to see if he saw it since he was attacking skeletons.).
Jus (Endurance,CGrace,BStr,MArmor [AC:23],Fly,SSkin,Shield [AC:30 facing North]) d20+18=24 18d6(1+4+2+5+5+1+6+4+3+1+2+1+1+6+2+5+2+1)=52 Friday October 5th, 2001 2:29:58 PM
Jus curses at himself for his inaction; this isn't the time to freeze. Unrolling one of the scrolls Nonam gave him, Jus casts the green fireball, centered to catch the Beholder and miss the party members. Spell Check to read scroll = 24. Damage = 52
Onrad (Endurance +2, BS +5, Mage Armor, Str 18 +4; Dex 23 +6; Con 16 +3) (Kim) Friday October 5th, 2001 5:02:26 PM
Onrad is about to answer Qualde, when something occurs to him. "That's a projected image. The real thing is somewhere else. Find it!" Onrad goes tearing across the littered temple to the far side, where one of the fallen stones appears to penetrate the wall.
Cantos d20+9=19 Sunday October 7th, 2001 9:00:13 PM
Cantos manages to resist the fear but heads immediately to a mound of rubble to use as cover and looks areound for the real beholder. "Where's it at?!?!?!"
Qualde (Endurance +5, GMW +3, BS +2, Enerated -4) d20+11=15 d2=2 d20+2=15 d20+2=12 Monday October 8th, 2001 1:32:47 AM
Qualde wobbles a bit as two successive waves of negative energy leave her weakened and in pain (failed Fort with 15, lose Stoneskin). She staggers north to crouch behind some rubble, and calls out, "Also may be part on other plane. Or undead."
She searches the upper dome area for signs of the presences of an invisible body, perhaps in the turbulence of smoke or dust motes. (Spot=15, Listen=12)
Let Me Spell It Out (DM Dave) d20+7=16 d20+7=19 d100=61 8d6(1+5+5+6+1+6+6+2)=32 Monday October 8th, 2001 7:27:11 AM
Magics fly as the group scrambles. For a moment, all retinas are overwhelmed by the flash of green flame, and over the low roar, the sound of a lady's scream may be heard.
When the flames dissipate, the beholder is nowhere to be seen.
The ceiling collapses.
[32 hps of damage from the cave-in. All make a Reflex DC 15 to take half damage. Regardless of this skill check, all are pinned, and will need to make a Str check DC 25 to free themselves. See page 114 of DMG for clarification.]
Dalelad (DM Dave) d20+14=24 d20=17 Monday October 8th, 2001 7:36:34 AM
The thief easily avoids the brunt of the damage, curling up in a ball, but doesn't have near the strength to shove the stones out of the way, once the dust clears [With a Str of 13, he'll never be able to roll a '25' to free himself - would need a 20 Str to have a +5 bonus on this check.].
"Uh, guys, I need a little help here. I've heard of crashing a party, but this is ridiculous."
Nonam (Cat's Grace+5) d20+10=15 d20-1=9 Monday October 8th, 2001 11:20:07 AM
Nonam just barely manages to dodge most of the falling debris. Muttering about the continuous featherfall obviously not applying to rocks, he ineffectively struggles for a moment to free himself. Since that obviously doesn't help, Nonam taps the mythal and teleports himself (and anyone else that he can) to the surface of the rubble.
Standing on the surface, he gasps for air and blurts out to Daledad wherever he might be, "How do you keep doing that? That's my last time if I can help it."
[permanently deleting 1 hp]

The warrior is unable to avoid a large chunk of ceiling as it crashes onto him (missed save). Hearing the woman scream he cringes hoping that they didn't just kill the one they came to save. With a mighty effort, he lifts the huge chunk of rubble enough to slide out. Once he sees that the beholder is gone he begins to unbury party members that are still pinned starting with the closest (made a bunch of strength check rolls to check for success in unburying members). "Either we just killed the one we came to retrieve or maybe you nailed to one responsible for the beholder.". He begins looking around the rubble for a non-party member who may have been fallen from above.

Cantos barely makes his save to avoid the worst of the damage from the falling ceiling," Sheesh first a beholder then the cieling What in the name of Domi will be next?" If Nonams spell allows Cantos to be teleported to the top of the rubble He will cast cure serious wounds on himself while within the Mythal that Nonam cast ( 20 hps cured). If he is not within the Mythal he will drink a cure serious wounds potion ( 11 points healed back)
Qualde (Endurance +5, GMW +3, BS +2, Enervated -4) d20+4=9 d20+2=14 Tuesday October 9th, 2001 3:29:53 AM
The weakened cleric is struck heavily by falling rubble (Reflex=9) and lies pinned beneath the bulk of it, helpless to free herself. "Who cast that?" she asks, her voice made even huskier by the rock dust. "Kicks like rotgut wine." She passes the time while she's trapped trying to make out what remains of the damaged dome. (Spot=14)
Tericus d20+10=27 d20+4=7 Tuesday October 9th, 2001 5:15:33 AM
not suffering any broken bones(made fort. check), Tericus is buried by the falling rocks(failed reflex check). once the dust has settled, Tericus finds himself unable to move at all(no chance of making strength check) "Help me, im stuck." he yells out

Fortunately, Nonam is near enough Jus to pull along the elf when he teleports out from beneath the pile of rocks.
With a mighty heave-to, the three freed ones commence rescue operations. Over the choking cloud of dust, muffled cries for help lead Gareth, Jus, and Nonam on a merry hunt as they work.
Jus and Nonam manage to pull Tericus from the rubble [I am showing Tericus at -3 hit points after the collapse. If this is true, Tericus needs to make a Con check DC 15 to avoid taking 13 points of damage during the minutes it takes Jus and Nonam to excavate the priest. Otherwise, Tericus receives subdual damage until falling unconscious, at which point the remainder of the subdual damage (13 minus any subdual damage already received) converts to actual damage - see page 114 of DMG] and Gareth locates and removes Onrad [Who suffers 8 points of subdual damage].
At this point, enough of the haze has cleared for those standing free to view the upper portion of the chamber, which now extends 90 feet overhead. The room is that of an elongated bell, with some type of ridge 60 feet up.
Emerging from above, with beams blazing, is Mr. Beholder [He is now located 60 feet up, near the ridge on the far side of the room].
[Subdual damage so far for the others still trapped: Addinein - 8; Cantos - 6; Dalelad - 18; Qualde - 10]

Eyebeam Two hits Nonam [Make Will check DC 18 to avoid running away in Fear].
Eyebeam Three hits Jus [Make Will check DC 18 to avoid being Slowed].
Eyebeam Four misses Nonam.
Eyebeam Five misses Jus.
Eyebeam Six strikes Nonam [Looses three levels, as per the Enervation spell on page 199 of PHB].
Eyebeam Seven misses Jus.
Eyebeam Eight connects with Nonam, automatically breaking bones [Make Fortitude save DC 18 to only take 6 points of damage and reducing movement to half rate, otherwise receive 4 points of damage this round and 5 points next as broken bones continue to do internal damage].
Eyebeam Nine hits Jus, eating the flesh away from bone [DC 18 Reflex check to only take 1 point of damage, otherwise take 11 points of damage and make Fort check to avoid literal loss of face, becoming temporarily blinded and deafened as the flesh slogs off (takes 2d4 rounds to clear enough to fight effectively - meanwhile suffer -6 on all actions.)].
Eyebeam Ten remains unused...
Dalelad (DM Dave) Tuesday October 9th, 2001 7:49:06 AM
With shriveled arms and broken bones, the thief remains curled up under (many) rocks, "What were you saying Nonam? Oh, the teleport thing? Yeah, well I wasn't going to use it any more, but figured it was worth the loss to get us safely through the city...what's that you're screaming? Beholder? Whaddya' mean? I thought you got him already. Would somebody get me out of here, or at least put a gravemarker over me? Hello? Anybody? Jus, I didn't know you're voice could reach that octave? OUCH, Gareth, that has got to be you...you weigh a ton. Hey! No, over here! Come back!"
Tericus d20+3=7 d20+3=5 Tuesday October 9th, 2001 9:20:39 AM
(i thought i was at 20, but i guess not) the time it takes his friends to dig him out Tericus is crushed to death(failed con check & hero pt reroll)
Nonam (Cat's Grace) d20+5=21 d20+7=27 d4=3 Tuesday October 9th, 2001 9:29:31 AM
Nonam isn't magically feared, but he's pretty dang scared nonetheless. The broken bones don't seem too bad, but the enervation leaves him weak. (20hp lost from enervation, loses spells Chain Lightning, Globe of Invulnerability,Hold Monster(the d4)).
Nonam quickly casts Bigby's Interposing Hand between himself and the beholder. He moves toward Jus and Tericus so hopefully the other 2 can get a little cover from the hand. A bit unnered Nonam blurts out, "We have to hit it with everything we've got gang."
Addinein (BS, CG, END) d20+8=10 d20+4=24 Tuesday October 9th, 2001 11:35:44 AM
Getting caught flat foot, Addinein gets pummeled by the falling debris.
Giving one mighty heave, Addinein manages to rise out of the debris.
Gareth (Bull's Strength +5, Endurance +3, Keen Weapon) Tuesday October 9th, 2001 11:45:03 AM
The warrior frowns at his lack of ability to get to the thing. "Guys, I can't get to it to hurt it. I need to fly. If either of you make that happen now would be a good time.". Knowing his arrows will not hurt it much (Hey, you didn't comment on Gareth's arrow attack last round) he continues to pull people from the rubble until he sees a way he can get at that thing to fight it. (Str checks already provided.)
Qualde (Endurance +5, GMW +3, BS +2, Enervated -4) Tuesday October 9th, 2001 12:04:06 PM
"Gareth, if fly --" Qualde coughs. "-- will fall when big eye looks. Can you climb?" The drow priestess lies still as the weight above her shifts, digging into her back.
Onrad (Kim) d20+7=26 d20+4=23 Tuesday October 9th, 2001 5:51:35 PM
Onrad made his fortitude save. Not quite strong enough to shrug all the fallen debris off him. He managed to curl into a ball and roll with the rubble, but now enjoys some fresh bruises. "Hey!" he shouts, then chokes a bit on the masonry dust. "Over *cough* here - by the far wall! *Cough-cough*."
Cantos d20=3 Tuesday October 9th, 2001 8:22:41 PM
Cantos fails his str check not even moving the rubble a lttle bit. " HHHEEELLLPPPP DOWN HERE!!!!!!!!!"
Jus (Endurance,CGrace,BStr,MArmor [AC:25],Fly,SSkin,Shield [AC:32 facing Beholder]) d20+13=20 d20+8=18 d20+8=20 d20+8=10 d20+8=17 d20+8=20 Tuesday October 9th, 2001 8:55:14 PM
Jus flinches when he hears the scream -- he actually thought that might happen. As he tries to determine where the scream comes from, the ceiling collapses. "No Way!" Jus thinks to himself, trying to discern if this is another illusion - after all, Carian just told him about the automatic feather fall. Luckily, he manages to avoid any of the boulders (DC20), and suddenly finds himself back on top of the rubble. Seeing Nonam, he quickly figures out what happened, "Thanks for the lift, Nonam."
Jus assesses the situation, seeing Gareth emerge from the rock-strewn floor, when the Beholder blasts him with its rays. The first eye beam hits Jus, slamming him back into the wall. Fortunately, Jus is able to resist the pinning effects of the ray and begins to advance again [rolled 18]. Another beam hits Jus, but he notices no change in himself [rolled 20 against Slow]. Three other beams streak towards Jus, luckily only one hitting him. Unfortunately, this one hurts… bad [missed DC; rolled 10]. Jus tries to focus all his willpower against this magical onslaught, and doubles his efforts when that is not enough [used 2 hero points; missed with 17, made it with 20]. Finally, a bit shaken but whole, Jus considers his surroundings once again.
Resisting the last of the rays, Jus slips his bow over his shoulder and whips out his sword as he yells to the others, "Gareth, find the others and pull them out of the rubble! Onrad, try to find the source of that feminine scream! Nonam, either help Onrad or help me take care of the beholder. Call for me to get out of the way when I need to -- but be careful not to hurt the girl!"
With that, Jus flies to the beholder, placing himself in front of the tentacular eyes [he'll try to use his fly to stay on the opposite side of the anti-magic eyeball, but not between Nonam and the Beholder]. Spinning his sword above him, he invokes the Sun Sword's ability to create daylight with the hopes of either blinding the beholder, or focusing all of its attention upon him.
Forgot to include effects of Cat's Grace in AC, note new numbers in my post name.

Gareth scurries around, trying to hear the calls of buried people above the shouts of combat.
Nonam successfully evokes the Hand to block future attacks.
There appears to be two of Jus flying to meet the Beholder, and it takes a moment to realize that the second 'Jus' is Ciaran!
The Immortal shouts to Jus, "Go! Save the Lady, and I will deal with this!"
Ciaran's white birthmark around his left eye throbs with power as he attacks the Beholder, striking four times [All would have hit, but the last one passes harmlessly through the Beholder - total damage of what did connect = 291].
The Beholder vanishes.
Aftermath (DM Dave) Wednesday October 10th, 2001 7:29:51 AM
Jus makes it to the ledge while Ciaran deals with the Beholder. In a pile of blackened treasure, the elf lays eyes upon the Lady, who is fair to behold, despite the severe burns. She is laid full out upon the ground, breathing shallowly. A constellation of precious stones lie suspended above her head. Her gaze is even as she returns Jus' stare, "Forgive me for not rising, Lord Elf. I fear I have not a bone left unbroken upon which to hang this frame."
Down in the wreckage below, Gareth, along with the others (including Ciaran) begin frantically flinging rubble out of the way, trying to free up the others before any more perish.
As they work, Ciaran cries, "Evil times are upon us! Alas, what was hidden from me is now finally revealed, and the gods stand stunned in horror. You must return to the Wold quickly now, if we are to have any hope at all."
Tears stream down his checks.
Nonam d8+5=10 3d8(6+3+5)+15=29 Wednesday October 10th, 2001 8:37:45 AM
As others pull his comrades from the rubble, Nonam checks on Tericus. If the priest is still alive. The balding wizard takes out his jar of Keoghtum's ointment and rubs one application into Tericus' wounds, "Come on buddy. Time to get up." He follows the ointment with a Cure Serious potion.
Jus (Endurance,CGrace,BStr,MArmor [AC:25],Fly,SSkin,Shield [AC:32 facing Beholder]) Wednesday October 10th, 2001 9:57:14 AM
Jus pauses, gazing at the elvin Lady, and chuckling that she would call him 'Lord Elf'. "Ah, Jus. What have you done?" Jus whispers to himself.
Approaching the Lady cautiously, Jus begins, "It pains me that I subjected you to the fireball, my humble apologies. As for rising, I would be honored if you'd allow me to carry you -- we appear to be in haste, so if you don't mind..."
If she is willing, Jus gathers whatever belongings the elf has, picks her up, and glides gently down to the rest of the party.
"What tidings are there, Ciaran? They must be grave since you revealed yourself."
Ciaran (DM Dave) Wednesday October 10th, 2001 10:13:55 AM
The Lady of the Woods gives her assent, indicating that none of the surrounding treasures are hers. Working quickly, Jus manages to gather up the following before rejoining the group on the floor below:
Spellbook, 2 daggers, some sort of bone-hilt (no blade), a miner's hammer, a brassiere (as in 'bra'), a pair of gauntlets, and a pile of gemstones (the bags holding them were completely burned). Left behind are obviously ruined items (potions, parchments, etc) and slag-heaps of precious metals.
"'Grave' is a decidedly inadequate description," replies Ciaran to Jus as he leaves off of the excavations, "I have already damned myself by my actions, but inaction would have damned countless multitudes in light of recent events."
"Unfortunately, we should best make a quick exit, lest our many-eyed foe make an early reappearance. What would be days in its reforming in the Wold is reduced to but a short span of time here the Mythal."
Looking at the Lady, he concludes, "She must be returned to her glade if recovery is to be made."
Qualde (Endurance +5, GMW +3, BS +2, Enervated -4) d3=1 d2=1 Wednesday October 10th, 2001 11:47:42 AM
(Also lost Heal, Break Enchantment, Raise Dead)
When unburied, Qualde helps to free the rest. She takes in the sight of her battered companions, the burned lady in Jus' arms, and the sad, broken form of Tericus. She can't help thinking that they got off lightly, indeed.
Turning to the weeping god, the drow addresses him in her native tongue. "Thank you for your help, Lord Ciaran. We will return to New Elenna as soon as we may. How might we restore the Lady to her home? Have we time for Nonam to weave the Mythal once more, that I might heal us somewhat before we move out?
Gareth Wednesday October 10th, 2001 11:51:06 AM
Seeing that the glowing globe has been dealt with, the warrior digs with reckless abandon as he frees his comrades. He hands out haling potions to those in need. Seeing Jus carrying the lady, the warrior says "M'Lady, if it will do you good I have some potions for your healing - if they'll work.". Looking to Jus he says "I would be honored to carry her if you feel we can make better time.".
Jus (Endurance,CGrace,BStr,MArmor [AC:23],Fly,SSkin,Shield [AC:30 facing North]) Wednesday October 10th, 2001 2:27:34 PM
Jus shakes his head to Gareth's question, and in halting words tells him, "No. No thanks, Gareth. My... My magic is... strengthening me more than adequately."
Jus is obviously distracted as he looks at Tericus. "I thought he was okay, didn't we get him in time," Jus asks, looking at Nonam.
With difficulty, Jus pulls himself back to the task at hand. "Yes, Ciaran, how do we get this Lady back to her home?"
Ciaran (DM Dave) Wednesday October 10th, 2001 4:05:31 PM
"There is no need to tarry - we will find safety once we reach the Glade. I will transport us, and it is only a matter of placing the lady in the pool to knit and mend her hurts.
"Are we ready?"
Gareth Wednesday October 10th, 2001 5:00:55 PM
"Jus, was that pile of melted gold worth trying to get out of here. If we can transport it I'd be inclined to take it with us.".
Onrad (Endurance +2, BS +5, Mage Armor, Str 18 +4; Dex 23 +6; Con 16 +3) (Kim) Wednesday October 10th, 2001 8:55:11 PM [OOC: Boy, Mr. DM, you were nice to Onrad!]
Onrad helps his friends out as he is able. If they are mobile, he helps gather what scattered items of treasure he can, then draws near for Ciaran's offer of transport.
He asks, with deference in his voice, "Ciaran, what is happening in the Wold now that causes worry?"
Cantos Thursday October 11th, 2001 1:53:55 AM
Cantos shakily stands out of the rubble as Gareth uncovers him," Many thanks, I wouldnt have been able to take that much longer it seems that I have been useless to you all here." With that the bard trudges slowly towards Cierran and awaits teleportion to wherever.
Dalelad (DM Dave) Thursday October 11th, 2001 7:33:24 AM
The thief looks around at Gareth's comment about gold. Not seeing anything shiny on the rubble-strewn floor, he glances at Jus with a quizzical look, wondering if perhaps the collapsing roof has adled Gareth's senses, making him see things.
Glade and Pool (DM Dave) Thursday October 11th, 2001 7:43:28 AM
Seeing everyone freed, Ciaran's birthmark glows, and the view changes starkly, the dusty ruins replaced by fresh air and a small, beautiful woodland glade, whose floor consists of a cracked circular bowl of steps rising in concentric rings from a pool.
Ciaran indicates that Jus place the Lady in the pool. Upon doing so, her pain immediately eases, and within a minute, she rises on her own, water dripping from her white raiment. Behind her, emerging from the waters, is a tall, impressive-looking elf with shriveled skin and glowing white eyes. He gazes upon the Three.
Ciaran (DM Dave) Thursday October 11th, 2001 8:17:00 AM
While the Lady is healing, Ciaran addresses the group, "Dire events are unfolding as we speak, and your immediate return to the Wold is required, if any hope is to be had...."
He breaks off his speech and turns, looking off to the left, as if viewing something from afar. A cry escapes his lips in some sort of foreign tongue, "Guq eyt luscoom!" Ciaran's shoulders sag.
After a moment, he returns his attention to the group, and begins pulling items out of thin air:
A heavy stone staff, ending in a clawed hand, is handed to Gareth, who recognizes it as the arm of Chaugnar Faugn, but the arm is stretched out, modified. "I have drawn out what powers I could, in the short time I have had it. Perhaps you will find some use for it in the days to come." He quickly outlines its effects [+3 Clawed Staff does 2d6 on strike and drains 1d6 Con points (no resistance allowed). Any hit points lost due to Con drain on target are immediately added to wielder’s total – any excess above the allowed maximum is lost after 6 rounds. If the victim fails a Reflex save vs. DC 10+damage (2d6), then the ‘hand’ has successfully grappled. The victim suffers Con loss (1d6) on subsequent rounds until a successful Strength save vs. DC 22 is made, allowing the victim to free himself. While trapped, movement is halted unless victim wins a contest of Strength against the wielder of the weapon (who gets to add +3 to his Str roll due to the weight of the staff). Left unattended, the weapon still weighs enough to reduce the victim’s movement in half and prevents charging or running. For save purposes, treat this item as an artifact, as it is created from the body of an Immortal. An exotic weapon proficiency is required to use this weapon (or suffer weapon-use penalty), and a –2 is still imposed on anyone M-sized or smaller, due to the weight and length of the weapon.].
To Jus is handed a mask made of some silky-grey fabric, whose edges are cut to resemble rows of feathers. It covers the upper face, and easily adheres to the skin, without need of strings [Wearer is able to fly at will, without tiring, as often as as far as desired - Speed = 30, Manueverability = Good (see DMG pg 69), able to cast spells in flight and hover. Always glows with white faerie fire while in flight. May carry up to 50 lbs of equipment, all other equipment drops off.]
Nonam Thursday October 11th, 2001 8:32:01 AM
Nonam briefly looks up at Jus, "I think he's alive, but..." He keeps helping Tericus while still wondering whether or not he's alive.
Ciaran (DM Dave) Thursday October 11th, 2001 8:37:24 AM
To Cantos is handed a harp of small, triangular design, with curving fore-pillars and 36 electrum strings. Tiny points of radiance appear, dancing along these strings, when they are strummed [As often as desired, after one round of playing may call up a Gust of Wind, emanating from the harp's base, or a wind wall of 20' square (lasting for 3 rounds or less, as the harpest wills)].
To Nonam is handed a another mask, this one with two horns curving up from its upper outer edges [Provides 90' Darkvision, ability to see ethereal creatures, Shadows (undead), invisible, and all creatures seeking to hide in shadows. Wearer is also able to see through flames, mist, fog, smoke and other opaque vapors or conflagrations. Cannot be blinded, dazzled, charmed, hypnotized, or stunned by magic or very intense light displays. Provides the Track feat] "May your vision never be clouded by deceit," Ciaran adds.
Cantos Thursday October 11th, 2001 8:46:31 AM
"Thank you kindly for this gift. I hope that it can aid us all in the future," Cantos bows deeply to the lady and the god. "Could you possibily tell us why we must return so quickly? This is very abrupt, and while I don't mind and am relieved you came to help, but my head is spinning just a bit."
Ciaran (DM Dave) Thursday October 11th, 2001 8:54:14 AM
To Qualde is handed a third mask, this one covering the entire face. It transforms the wearer's visage to resemble that of a skull (teeth and gums are bared, and dark sockets appear around the eyes and nose) [Provides immunity to fear, all disease, paralysis, and can recognize all beings viewed as either living (including petrified or in suspended animation), dead, undead, or never living (such as a regular statue). Also provides immunity to undead chilling, enervation attacks, aging and strength draining attacks from undead.]
To Addinein is given a fourth mask: This one shaped like a point-downwards, vertical bellows. [Allows the user to influence movements of gases and vapors within 60' as often as desired. Once every 6 rounds, wind can be woven into gust of wind or wall of wind. Can turn aside gale-force winds, smoke, convection currents, poisonous gas, beings in gaseous form, scent-laden breezes, etc.]
Pulling Dalelad aside, Ciaran places his right palm over Dalelad's left eye briefly, leaving behind a white tattoo, "You are now marked as one of my representatives. You I reserve for my own use in the upcoming tribulations."
Turning to Addinein and Onrad, Ciaran continues, "You two will accompany Dalelad. You will not be needing the Lady's gate to return to the Wold - your destiny lies elsewhere, if we are to overcome our foes."
He turns and contemplates Tericus' supine form briefly, apparently debating whether or not he, too, should be included in Dalelad's group.
Lady of the Woods (DM Dave) Thursday October 11th, 2001 9:05:08 AM
Bowing gracefully, the Lady addresses Jus, "Mylord, it is good to see you in such health. Indeed, if I may be so bold, the years seem to have been uncomingly kind."
The strange elf in the waters behind the Lady interrupts, "Lady Serantina, he does not yet know you. For him, this is your first meeting."
A light of understanding seems to pass behind her eyes, and the Lady of the Woods murmers, "That would explain why he has not the crown."
Approaching Jus, the Lady reaches up and pulls some of the stars from those floating about her head, and places them about the elven warrior. A slight weight is felt, "You will find this useful in the days to come, Jus. Go heartened, knowing that the gods smile upon you."
[Crown of Stars -appears to be ioun stones from a distance, but is a collection of palm-sized emeralds, rubies, sapphires and diamonds that are magically bound by invisible forces. These glow with a faint, twinkling radiance that will pierce even magical darkness. Once a day, 9 charges available to cast from the following list: Dispel Magic (20th lvl), Lightning Bolt (9th lvl), Unseen Servant (20th lvl), Evard’s Black Tentacles (20th lvl), Wizard Eye (20th lvl – but causes the user’s spectral eyes to appear as a wraith-like, intangible head, encircled by twinkling stars – user can’t be attacked this way, but can be identified). Also, at the price of permanently reducing one random ability score, and with a 30% chance of causing the Crown to vanish, the user can cast a Power Word, Kill and/or Meteor Swarm once per day]
Tericus d20+3=10 Thursday October 11th, 2001 9:11:33 AM
(OOC: Sorry about the delay, I wasn't sure if I could re-roll a failed hero point roll)
Though Nonam tries his best, Tericus breathes no more (failed last re-roll).
Ciaran (DM Dave) Thursday October 11th, 2001 9:18:59 AM
Bowing in deference to the Lady (and Jus?), Ciaran says, "Time is of the essence. It slips quickly through our fingers, and we must move just as quickly. As we speak, events have already moved beyond our reach, and now we must contain the damage as best we can. Gareth, to you and those with you that I have not claimed for my own purpose, I entrust you with one word of wisdom: Everything is not as it seems, and for you to be successful, you must seem to be what you are not."
Jerking back around, and gazing off in the distance, he shouts, "Aie! It goes too quickly!
He turns back to the group, "You must say your goodbyes briefly, or they will be permanent."
Pointing to Tericus, he states, "As much as Dalelad will need his help, I cannot exert that much power without becoming more bound by the Mythal. Gareth, take the priest to a priest as quickly as possible, for he will be sorely needed in the days to come. Dalelad, I will be taking you, Onrad, and Addinein to another gate in the city. I will brief you once we arrive."
Gareth (Bull's Strength +5, Endurance +3, Keen Weapon) d20+4=13 Thursday October 11th, 2001 12:34:02 PM
The warrior graciously accepts the staff with a hearty bow, and he practices wielding it a moment wondering what it's going to feel like once his Bull's Strenghth wears off. He quickly settles into watching the presentation of the other gifts and revels in the attention being paid to Jus by the beautiful Woodland Queen.
As the god pronounces his plan the warrior frowns at the idea of the party being split. "I ask your forgiveness in advance, and I do not pretend to know what is happening, but I must insist you explain why we are being split up. We are always strongest when together. And I must hear my friends tell me they are OK with your plan to take them with you. Otherwise I must oppose it as is my oath to them. Where are you taking them and why?". The warrior tries to ask his question with as much grace as he can muster - with marginal success (CHA 13). But he hopes the god -if that is truely what he is - will understand his true motives.
(NOTE: I made the assumption that Jus communicated what he saw up top in the way of treasure - since we are running in fast mode right now. No intended 'extra' knowledge...)
Ciaran (DM Dave) Thursday October 11th, 2001 2:17:09 PM
Irked, Ciaran responds, "You (Gareth) must do damage control, and you will be most effective, as you are about to obtain Dragon-level status, allowing you access to the appropriate areas. However, it will not be enough. The Fool has not thought out the end results of his actions, and doesn't realized the inevitable. Thus it is for all who are quick to grasp for that which is beyond their reach. Dalelad and the others must work on that angle, and I need to place them on another plane with the resources, and different temporal-flow, in order for them to discover a solution."
Trying to compose himself, and clearly angered at some events outside of the glade, Ciaran concludes, "I am an immortal. I am reduced and chained by the Mythal. But I am trying, within my limited resources, to effect a solution. It is beyond me to have the Three at two places at once. However, the current problem is so massive that having fifteen Gareths would not ensure success. My foresight has not completely failed me, and this is the best division of resources, if we are to dampen utter chaos."
A brief vision flashes in the mind of everyone: A stadium full of entranced people swaying, with their souls streaming out of their bodies, while a group of heroes madly fight to overcome an altar that is apparently the cause. Two divine beings enter the arena...and then the vision fades
"To show more will only cause you greater grief and despair...Our time is at an end."
Gareth Thursday October 11th, 2001 3:19:33 PM
The warrior lowers his head in acquiesance. "I apologize for my resistance. I just had to be sure...". He picks up his friend Tericus and say "I am ready to go. We will restore my friend and fight whatever evil is being done in our land. Thank you Tiarnan Ciaran Darragh. You have been good to us. Please consider me your ally and supporter as you have certainly proven yourself to me. Perhaps we can return here some day and learn more of you and this place. I don't think Nonam got to look in that library he was wanting to see. So how exactly do we get back to Plateau City?". He stands ready.
Jus Thursday October 11th, 2001 4:07:01 PM
Pleasantly suprised at Cairan's gift, it is nothing compared to what happens next. Jus is beyond words as this elvin Lady presents him the crown. "I thank you for this gift, Lady Serantina." Jus is a bit puzzled with her name, he thought this was Mystra, someone he had hoped to meet here in the Myth. "I... I don't understand what you refer to, but am glad we know -- will know -- each other."
Solemnly, Jus listens to Cairan's description of the party's necessary split. Shaking hands with Onrad, Jus says, "Take care of yourself. I expect to see you again -- someone needs to irritate Nonam." Jus shakes hands with the Dalelad and Addinein and bids them god speed.
With one last cautious nod to Lady Serantina, Jus turns to Cairan, "I'm ready, lets go."
Nonam Thursday October 11th, 2001 11:27:14 PM
Nonam rather mirthlessly puts on the mask and waves goodbye to his friends. "Thank you Ciaran. May we meet again one day."
Then the wizard hands Jus a spellbook, "You better take this back. You need to practice your reading afterall." Nonam manages a weak grin.
Next, he turns and hands Qualde a scroll. "I've carried this around for a long time without needing it, but it looks like the time has come." The scroll's label reads "Resurrection."
"Well if there's nothing else, let's go be dragons."
Onrad (Kim) Friday October 12th, 2001 2:57:59 AM
"I -- had not foreseen that we who have been together so long might have to part company." Onrad looks on his friends and long-time companions, images of years and adventures past flitting through his mind. He recalls sharing Gareth's body for a time after the chimerae killed his own. And of Jus' creativity in so many situations. He winces at the skull-like visage of Nonam as he wears the mask. "Can't you get some makeup for that thing?"
He quickly says goodbye to his friends. He even pulls Qualde to him for a brief hug. "I never thought I would be hugging a beautiful drow." He turns quickly so that others cannot see the mist that begins to fill his eyes. "May the worthy gods watch over you all." He offers a sweeping bow to the Lady Serantina and the old elf with her. With no more words, he looks to those who will go with Ciaran, then at Ciaran himself. He nods his head.
Ciaran (DM Dave) Friday October 12th, 2001 7:01:47 AM
"We will all be making many sacrifices in the days to come...do not let mine be in vain. My time in the pantheon of the gods is past, but I will render aid as I am able, even from afar. Do not forget!"
With that, he, Dalelad, Onrad, and Addinein disappear.
Glade Departures (DM Dave) Friday October 12th, 2001 7:17:03 AM
A portion of their group gone, the Three have only a moment to ponder, before the Lady of the Woodlands states, "Come. Your path lies back in Plateau City."
She beckons the group to walk into the pond, toward a gathering column of mist in its center. Upon setting foot on the waters, it is discovered that they have become hard, but not slick.
The Lady explains, "Fae Mere does not easily tolerate the flesh of many." Looking down upon the glassy surface, the group sees many sparkling items littered along the bottom of the pond. It takes a moment for the sight to sink in: The treasure below could buy several kingdoms, with enough left over for many a dragon hoard!
The wizened male elf, still standing chest-deep in the waters, states, "Normally, users of the gate would be required to discard all but a few of their belongings to obtain passage. However, the Lady has decreed this consideration be waived this once, in gratitude for the saving of her life."
With one last glance, the Three enter the mists, drawn from the realm of Myth Drannor, back into the Wold.
The mists clear, and the group finds itself standing within a great hall, with the Green Dragon's insignia prominently displayed. Five Green Dragon members, conferring around a great wooden table, jump up with a start at your sudden appearance.
Bertram (DM Dave) Friday October 12th, 2001 7:28:07 AM
"See Sandorak? As I was saying, time moves quiet differently between Drannor and the rest of the Wold. They have managed to come out, though they seem to be missing a few..."
Sandorak (DM Dave) Friday October 12th, 2001 7:32:43 AM
Turning his one good eye to glare at the party, the dark dwarf replies, "Aye, and managed to pull their wayward elfling back in with them."
Blowing snot from his nostrils, Sandorak states, "And the reek of the Mythal clings to them like a whore."
Morham (DM Dave) Friday October 12th, 2001 7:35:06 AM
The leader of the Green Dragons rises and simply inquires, "You completed the mission?"
Belvinas (DM Dave) Friday October 12th, 2001 7:37:29 AM
"More likely the mission completed them," jests the priest.
Seeing Tericus' still form, he quickly rises and heads over to check.
Themov (DM Dave) Friday October 12th, 2001 7:38:54 AM
After briefly jumping at the Three's sudden appearance, the surly mage sits back down, arms crossed, and begins muttering to himself under his breath.
Gareth Friday October 12th, 2001 12:48:10 PM
The warrior carries Tericus over to a couch and lays his still body down as he is checked. "We did complete our mission - and another. But that is not important right now. The missing members have gone to another place to help fight the upcoming evil on another front. "The Golden Arena is currently the site of the vilest evil act ever done here in Plateau City. Some Dark Power is sucking the life from everyone there - I think...". Anyway, we were told to return quickly and to get Tericus here restored. Can you help us with this or must we go to a temple? I had a scroll of Resurrection but it was destroyed by the Mythal.".
The warrior also asks "Do you know what we must now do?".
Nonam Friday October 12th, 2001 1:01:54 PM
"I just handed Qualde a resurrection scroll. Perhaps one of these gents would take care of the casting... unless Qualde wants to of course. I also don't think we were sent to stop the vile act. We were sent to pretend to be what we are not. Whatever that means."
Jus Saturday October 13th, 2001 12:23:05 AM
Jus looks around, unsure where they are or the identities of these people. "Hello, I'm Jus," he says, unsure if they need his introduction. Glad to see someone jump to help Tericus, Jus moves aside to give him room. Walking over to Themov -- making sure to stay away from the dwarf, Jus asks him the name of this place.
Tericus Saturday October 13th, 2001 8:41:14 AM
Tericus begins to smell bad
Belvinas (DM Dave) Saturday October 13th, 2001 2:03:27 PM
With Qualde's assent, Belvinas quickly utilizes the scroll, bringing Tericus back to life (see description on page 246 of PHB - restored fully to health with all 'memorized' spells intact, but permanent loss of one level).
Themov (DM Dave) Saturday October 13th, 2001 2:07:22 PM
"'Told'? 'Sent'? By who, what do you mean?" asks the crusty man, ignoring for a moment the approaching elf.
Sandorak (DM Dave) Saturday October 13th, 2001 2:10:25 PM
"It was as I said, Morham, something is up at the Arena. Cleesney is usually dead on." He eyes Jus warily, staring with something of distate mixed with curiousity at the crown of gems resting upon the elf's brow.
To Nonam's comments, the dwarf adds, "Well, I guess you can pretend to be Dragons, although what to call you -- Pseudodragons, Fool's Gold Dragons, or Gareth's Dragons -- you must pick. Perhaps the 'Hydras' are fitting." He adds with a smirk.
Morham (DM Dave) Saturday October 13th, 2001 2:17:20 PM
To Gareth, the leader of the Green Dragons inquires, "Perhaps you'd share with us what exactly happened?"
He pulls out a decanter and begins filling a crystal goblet with its clear wine.
Nonam Saturday October 13th, 2001 7:15:15 PM
Nonam gazes at Sandorak for a moment and grins, "I suppose none of those would have any trouble eating a scrawny little dwarf." Then he nods to Gareth, "Go on. Tell him what happened. Silver dragon. Ciaran. Learning the secrets of the mythal. Killing the elephant god. Nearly getting killed by the beholder ghost. Rescuing the elf lady. The whole bit."
Cantos Sunday October 14th, 2001 9:03:40 PM
Cantos looks at the Green Dragons sitting around the table. "I guess it's easy to look down at your nose at us, well as far as I am concerned you can sod off. We just lost a valuable friend a comrade to Myth Dranor, as well as nearly losing all of us. Three of our friends are not here with us to relay the story as they saw it and that is troubling to all of us and you would mock us... Sir that is not the actions of a Dragon Troupe." With that Cantos strides to the other side of the room and gently strums the harp given to him, singing a song about loss and friendship.
Jus Monday October 15th, 2001 3:40:12 AM
Jus smiles at Cantos and nods in encouragement, "You tell them!" When the priest begins his rite on Tericus, Jus runs over to watch with crossed fingers -- temporarily forgetting his curiosity on the looks he's getting from the Green Dragons. Whatever irritation the Dwarf was feeling towards Jus is easily returned twofold.
Themov (DM Dave) Monday October 15th, 2001 6:17:01 AM
"WHAT? What was that you said? Ciaran?" asks Themov of Nonam, and the other Green Dragons noticeably turn their attention to the mage.
"What was that verse of prophecy written...something like, 'The men of Ciaran again roam the Wold during the end days, the dragons of the Storm rise to fight the clouds of chaos...' or some such," Themov muses.
Still introspective, the old man begins casting a long spell.
Nonam Monday October 15th, 2001 7:16:33 AM
Nonam muses, "Hmm, Storm Dragons."
