Foray Into the Wood

A Fresh Start... (DM Chris)
Tuesday September 18th, 2001 3:11:24 PM

Emerging from the tunnel, the Emerald Talons find themselves standing in a small glade, the centerpiece of which being the rather sizeable outcropping of stone, out from under which they just crawled. Standing to one side of the glade are about a half dozen anxious looking dwarves, and while they indeed have all the horses, the wagons are no where to be seen. One of them immediately approaches Orgar, and speaks quietly to him in fervent tones, before dropping something in his hand. Having the new dwarf grab the door, Orgar turns to the group. "I'm sorry... the path that my kin here were forced to take through the woods to get here, was somewhat prohibitive. They did however... " Orgar gives the younger dwarves a stern look and then turns back, " they did sell your wagons, hoping that you might acquire new ones wherever you land from here." With that Orgar hands K'nara a sizeable pouch that has the obvious jingle of coin to it. (The pouch contains 50 gps) "I'm sorry for any inconvience this may have caused you." Orgar seems genuinely apologetic. "I'm also told that there are agents of Parnoth throughout the wood, but the safest way to travel at this point would be on a small game trail at the north end of this glade." Orgar jerks his thumb back, indicating the other side of the outcropping. "From there you should be able to get where ever it is you're headed next."

Figment
Tuesday September 18th, 2001 5:38:40 PM

The mage grins ear to ear as he sees Jux. He immediately looks him over with great detail and investigates his saddlebags closely to make sure none of the traps on them have been sprung and that all his possessions are still there. He thanks the dwaves profusely for returning his friend to him.

Brother Bertram
Tuesday September 18th, 2001 8:38:58 PM

Bertram shakes hands with his dwarven kindred as they prepare to leave. "I wish all of you well in your endeavors and if you ever have a need I am in your debt cousins"

K'Nara
Wednesday September 19th, 2001 7:52:02 AM

The human bladesinger grasped Orgar's hand in a very firm handshake.

"Thank you for all your help, Orgar," K'Nara said sincerely, "I hope your clan lives long and safely within the bosom of Mother Earth." Then the leader of the Emerald Talons turned to the horses that were present. Jux was Figment's mount, as Poki was hers, but the remaining four mounts were the ones used to pull the two wagons--and were not enough for the rest of the group to ride one per horse.

"I'm fair enough on a horse so that I can take someone with me on Poki," K'Nara said, "Who will it be..?"

Milo
Wednesday September 19th, 2001 9:30:19 AM

Hearing K'nara's question, this time Milo does not delay, "Me me me... I want to ride with you. My poor Rose is still back in Plateau City."

Flueterflam
Wednesday September 19th, 2001 12:25:08 PM

"Hmmm... I suppose I'll have to get my own horse one of these days." The bard snickers slightly. "After I become a famous actor I'll definitely have the money. In fact, I might be so famous that people will GIVE me their horses. Of course I'll refuse all but the purest bred, and most noble of them..." Fluet babbles on for a few more moments before realizing he will probably be riding with someone. "So who am I gonna ride with?"

Olana
Wednesday September 19th, 2001 6:30:27 PM

Olana gives the dwarf Orgar a gracious bow, and thanks the ones who had brought the horses.
She then ponders over the riding situation.
"Actually, I think we might have enough. Isn't that Ingrge's horse there, and Bertrams pony?"
Moving toward one of the carthorses, she adds -
"Fluet, if some of these horses aren't rideable, then you can ride with me if you like."

INGRGE
Wednesday September 19th, 2001 7:01:15 PM

Looking around the area as the dwarves arrived, Ingrge goes pale for a moment, and then steps forward to K'narra. "Umm I am glad your mounts are here and the draft horses are all fine and nice and I am glad they were able to sell the wagon but, I mean, Umm, Where in the seven levels of the Big Float, is Moon Shadow?"

At Olanna's pronouncement that she has spotted the other horses coming out from the trees, Ingrge relaxes a bit and quickly strides over to then to see how his friend and companion has held up.

Takin' a short break... (DM Chris)
Wednesday September 19th, 2001 9:00:52 PM

As the dwarves say their final goodbyes, Orgar speaks up again, "Way I see it, you have a couple of choices at this point, you can try to go marching through the Culverwood, dodging agents of Parnoth left and right, or you can stay in this nifty glade for a while and give things a chance to cool off before you move on. However, if you want to stay here, you're going to have to speak with 'the lord of the glade' up there." With that, Orgar snorts and points to the top of the stony outcropping, and then without further ado, he shuts the door leaving absolutely no sign that it existed a moment ago.

Upon on the top of the rocky outcropping, you see what appears to be a very old elf... or at least, the only elf you've ever seen with wrinkles, albeit only around the mouth and eyes. He has waist length straight black hair, shot through with silver, and tied back in a ponytail. His liquid blue eyes seem to stare straight through you... if he is staring at anything at all. "Greetings, and welcome to my glade. I am Nel'dorath, and my erstwhile pupil who is out roaming the forest in search of trouble at the moment, is Lian. You are welcome to stay and rest here in the glade for a short while. The stream that you can hear in the northwest is full of fish, the water is fresh, and the grazing plentiful. I only ask one favor of you. When you go... please take Lian with you. His wanderlust is nearly driving me to distraction, no small feat I assure you, and I would just as soon see the lad get it out of his system so he may resume his studies with all due seriousness in the future... perhaps about a hundred years would do it. What say you?" At that, another elf, barely past his coming of age appears behind the old man. You didn't hear or see him till now, though he looks intent on plucking a feather tied in the back of Nel'dorath's hair. He stops dead though when the aged elf speaks, "Too noisy young one... try again another time." Looking at the group, "Do you see what I mean?" The young elf has light green eyes and waist long platinum blonde hair, also tied back in a pony tail. He stands about 5'3", and is very slender. He is currently wearing loose sky blue linens wrapped together at his wrists and calves with strips of
supple leather. He looks disappointed that he did not surprise his mentor.

Flueterflam
Thursday September 20th, 2001 1:58:20 AM

In response to Olana, "If that's the case, don't you think Milo would get jealous?" A large joking wink is produced. Then a bit more quietly, "I think he's had his eye on ya lately."

At the somewhat interesting show of elven 'antics' Fluet produces a large small across his face. He strides over to the younger elf, "Well met, friend...may I call you friend? I hope that to not be too rude. Afterall, I'm not 100% familiar with elven customs, me not being an elf and all. Anyway, where was I? Oh yes!

"My name is Flueterflam, although Fluet is fine as well. I doubt you'll have any trouble with joining our ranks. But that's probably K'nara's decision and all," he points to the warrior woman.

Lian
Thursday September 20th, 2001 6:07:00 AM

Not smiling at the man, sure that he might say something wrong, Lian just bows nearly in half.
"I am Lian Siannodel, you may call me Lian... and friend if you wish, even though you do not know me yet, sir."
As Lian rises, a look a curiousity appears on his face. A singular eyebrow crawls slowly up his forehead as he scans The Emerald Talons, unblinking. Then he looks in the direction of his mentor and friend Nel'dorath, "I am to ride with these fine people?", says Lian, almost puzzled.
Lian then walks up to the warrior Fluet referred to as K'nara. Dropping his eyes, avoiding eye contact, he askes with respect, "You are the leader of this collection of travelers?" "May I travel the world with you and your friends? ...Please?" The 'please' almost an after-thought.
He stands like a statue, hands clasped in front of him, not moving waiting for the Great Leaders response.

Brother Bertram
Thursday September 20th, 2001 8:25:47 AM

Bertram bows respectfully to Nel'dorath and listens to the ancient elf's proposal. The dwarven cleric eyes the young elf appraisingly, then nods affably in Lian's direction.

K'Nara  d20=20
Thursday September 20th, 2001 8:41:27 AM

K'Nara's sharp hazel eyes take in the lad's appearance, her mind turning over the possibilities that Lian may be nothing more than a clever way for Parnoth to get a spy into the Talons' midst. (OOC: made a Sense Motive check, which should technically have a -1 on it due to K'Nara's low Wisdom--but it's still a natural 20, so she ought to be able to spot Lian's true motivation.) A smile quirked at the human bladesinger's mouth, one that was both amused and a trifle bit sad.

"It's obvious that you are eager to see the Wold, Lian," K'Nara observed, "But I would warn you that traveling with us is likely to brand you a fugitive from Parnoth's law, as he has pronounced every one of us--with the exception of Brother Bertram, here--banished from his realm. If you would brave the taint of this edict, then I'm happy to welcome you to our company for our journey westward."

Milo  d20+6=23
Thursday September 20th, 2001 10:28:59 AM

His head snapping towards Flueterflam, Milo has, splayed across his face, an expression that looks distinctly like a cross between anger and embarrasement, "What of it Fluet... so what if I have." Then realizing what he just said, the halfling turns six shades of crimson before dashing to the other side of the rock. Standing on the opposite side of Lian, his curiosity overcomes his embarrasement momentarily. He walks between the elf and K'nara, looking directly up into his bowed face from his short vantage point, "Why are you doing that? Is there something on the ground?" Milo turns to look at the ground, in an attempt to see what Lian is staring at, if anything at all. Then turning again, he looks back up at Lian, sticking his hand out in order to shake, "Pleased to meetcha' I'm Milo Thistledown... normally I do a great deal of sneaking myself, and Alemi is my guide... though today it looks as though he has walked me right into a trap." Milo begins turning red again as he quickly extricates himself from between Lian and K'nara, and uses the new elf as a shield from what may be the stares of his comrades.

Figment
Thursday September 20th, 2001 11:11:25 AM

The mage smiles at the ancient elf and bows politely. "Greetings Nel'dorath. We indeed greatly appreciate your hospitality. Perhaps we could sit tonight and trade stories of our ventures? As to your charge Lian here, What type of studies is he involved in?".

Ingrge
Thursday September 20th, 2001 6:45:23 PM

Giving Nel'dorath the proper respectful greating due one of the true Elders, "Wise One, I at least would truely enjoy the chance to rejuvinate within the shelter of the glade. I hope that it may be so." As Ingrge then moves into the glade he looks the young elf up and down momentarily as he passes. A whispered "Youngling" is heard as a greeting, as he passes by.

Walking up to Figment, Ingrge smiles, "I think we may have found our uninterupted block of time to read our TOMES and to copy those scroll that we have."

Olana
Thursday September 20th, 2001 11:59:09 PM

Olana looks between Fluet and Milo for a long moment, her mouth in the shape of a silent letter 'o'.
Recovering her composure, she says. "Well Milo's riding with K'Nara I think."
Her look of surprise, this time coupled with awe, stays with her as the ancient elf Nel'dorath introduces himself. She bows and gives him and his young companion a hand gesture of greeting, common to her tribe.

As the others introduce themselves, she smiles at Lian, wondering - with the colour of his hair, whether they might be related in some way.
Time and conversation would tell.
She then attempts to catch Milo's eye and give him a wink.

At some point, she will ask Nel'dorath the ancient one, if he would be gracious enough to share some of what he knows about the local forest.
"I too am from a tribe in Culverwood. But they live much closer to the Emerald City, or at least they did until Parnoth drove them away. I would be grateful for any knowledge you could share, venerable one. I am the party's ranger, and so the more I am aware of the local terrain, the better."

The Glade... (DM Chris)
Friday September 21st, 2001 4:35:06 AM

Looking towards Figment, "Lian studies the 'Way,' which is a philosophy too little practiced these days among the elves. It involves what some may consider strict adherence to a rigorous training of the mind, body, and spirit. Harmony is the ultimate goal. Harmony with oneself as well as with the world around you." Then looking towards Olana, "I'm afraid that I've made this simple glade my home for some time, and while little here has changed, much outside of it has. Though if you choose to explore some, I would caution you to not stray too far from the glade on your own, as the land surrounding here is largely untamed." To the group in general, "Please good folk, rest and recuperate, I sense that your spirits have taken a heavy toll, and a brief respite may be just what you need before you continue upon your life's journey." From then on, Nel'dorath says little to the group, keeping Lian close as he concentrates mainly on instructing the young elf in preparation for his departure.
(At this time, you should post any final comments in this conversation, and then declare your intentions for the next couple weeks. Monday we will start the expedition to Perpaguil.)

Milo
Friday September 21st, 2001 4:39:24 AM

Sneaking slyly around the group, Milo approaches Olana, looking somewhat hesitant, if not downright shy, "Hey... you wanna do some scouting with me while we're hangin' around this glade waitin' for the highbrows to read their books?" Hoping that Olana will join him, Milo intends to scout a short way into the woods surrounding the glade, spend time fishing in the stream, and some time in prayer and comtemplation of his duty to Alemi for the next couple weeks.

Lian  d20+10=13
Friday September 21st, 2001 5:51:19 AM

Reaching to meet the enthusiastic handshake of the halfling, he nods back to Brother Bertrum. Lian glances up as Ingrge passes with the 'youngling comment', raising yet another eyebrow, this time saying, "Greetings.", under his breath.
Olana, upon seeing the smile on her face, not sure that it was about him or her halfling friends apparent embarrassment, she recieves a tight smirk in return.
Lian then raises his eyes, slightly, at K'nara's comment about Parnoth; saying under his breath almost inaudibly, "I would think then, perhaps, Parnoth can tally up yet another fugitive." His eyes then meet hers with an intensity not yet seen in the young elf by the group.

(Listen Check to see if Lian can hear what Milo is saying to Olana, all-the-while trying to hone that skill and become acustomed to the halflings movements and sounds (such as breathing, gear rustling etc...), Listen Check of 13!) :*

Figment
Friday September 21st, 2001 11:47:01 AM

The mage smiles large at Ingrge. "So it does, my friend. Let's set up camp and begin, shall we?". The mage makes all necessary preparations for scribing, reading, studying, practicing, etc.. And begins. He reads his Tome of Clear Thought, meditates on it and discusses it with Ingrge - hoping to maximize it's effectiveness on him.

As he has time over the break he uses his fishing skills and his culinary abilities as a chef to really spoil the Talons and their host as he never has before - since it's the first time ever they have been at a place that has food and plants available for such uses in abundance.

K'Nara  d20+4=20
Friday September 21st, 2001 4:12:50 PM

The leader of the Emerald Talons smiled at Lian's spirited answer.

"Then we will be honored to shelter within this glade until we are all fully prepared to venture back to the village and finish our business there, o elder." K'Nara replied to the older elf, bowing low and gracefully with a flourish that all of elven blood recognize as being peculiar to the elf tribes of the southwestern edge of the Culverwood. (OOC: made a voluntary Dexterity check to execute the distinctive move.)

The next few days saw the spellcasters study the tomes captured from the renegade traitor wizard, while K'Nara assidiously applied herself to the long-distance training supplied by Greymalkin. The redhead remembered to ask Figment to Identify the marvelous-looking short sword that the dwarves had presented the group with, too.

K'Nara was pleasantly surprised to find that invoking magic effects was coming a little more easily to her now--her elven taskmaster commented that her daily sessions were doing the female fighter a Wold of good...now all she had to do was REMEMBER to use the magic during combat and she'd be all set!

Ingrge
Friday September 21st, 2001 6:38:48 PM

Almost smiling, Ingrge works with Figment to create an area that would be both comnfortable and suitable for their needs and then along with figment gets to work reading, discussing, scribing and practicing. Taking a few breaks here and there for Figment' culinery delights, Ingrge's color starts returning to his body and he almost seems jovial. Some time is also spent in talking with the newcomer and working onhis martial skills.

Brother Bertram
Friday September 21st, 2001 10:11:47 PM

Bertram spends most of his time in devotions to Domi, praying for guidance and strength in the upcoming days and months. He spends a considerable time as well honing his axe as well as his axework, practicing different techniques. The remainder of his time is spent getting to know a little bit more about his new friends.

Lian
Saturday September 22nd, 2001 4:49:35 AM

"Ingrge, do you mean to spar with someone, because I will be more than happy to hone both our skills before the journey!?" Of course, if Ingrge offers any 'weapon' training, Lian will kindly decline.

I would like to take time to gather advice from Lian's new friends about what he might expect in the upcoming trip. I want to get to know, more or less, about what they do and what professions they may hold if any. Lian will intently listen to any word of wisdom.

K'Nara
Sunday September 23rd, 2001 7:15:11 AM

From his observations and talks with K'Nara, Lian finds out that the six-foot-tall athletically-built young human woman is from a village called Derring.

She left her village to follow her urge to become a fighter, but was shortly thereafter recruited by an elf named Gemsmith to train in the primarily elven art of the bladesong. Once Gemsmith had exhausted his capabilities of teaching her to be the Wold's only human bladesinger, she went to Emerald City to seek work as a mercenary, only to be forced into service for Parnoth.

K'Nara showed a flagrant tendency to pervert Parnoth's instructions, and the dragon attempted to have her killed by separating her from the Emerald Talons, but luck was with the human bladesinger--she escaped with her life and rejoined her colleagues in Plateau City. Parnoth had banished the group from the Emerald Kingdom, but they returned to aid the plague-stricken peoples of the Culverwood.

The Talons were then asked by the Tines--an underground movement seeking to dethrone Parnoth--to rescue Tremaine, one of their top leaders, from the green dragon's infamous prison. The Talons managed to do that--only to, themselves, fall into Parnoth's clutches once more.

Though the dragon obviously would have preferred to merely have them as a seven-course dinner, Parnoth was himself dealing with a traitor within his own ranks--and dispatched the banishees to solve a problem that the traitor wizard had created within the mines of the dwarf clan that resided in the mountain near the glade. The Talons followed Parnoth's orders not because of the dragon, but to help the dwarves.

After battling a plague of magically-created, metal-munching beetles, the Talons were spirited out of the mine by the dwarves, who gratefully faked a cave-in that the clan was informing Parnoth's guards had "killed" the party. Lian was now joining up with the group as they get ready to complete their escape from the Green One's sphere of influence.

Passing Time... (DM Chris)  d20+7=9
Monday September 24th, 2001 2:38:42 PM

The Talon's time in the glade passes quite peacefully in study, meditation, prayer, exercise and the many other activities they choose to pursue while resting. Figment and Ingrge completely study their Tomes, gaining the magical bonuses therein, and Figment attempts to identify the sword... unsuccessfully. It seems as though the unique properties of the strange alloy have some resistance to magic. When the warriors of the group spar, they discover that Lian does indeed fight much better with no weapon in his hands at all. In fact, he is quite capable of destroying hard wood branches with his punches and kicks. A feat normally left for a sturdy axe. Lian receives some much needed lessons in the Talon's history, and the group eats quite well due mainly to Figment's diligent efforts, coupled with the occasional assistance of Nel'dorath, who finds some of the most wonderful herbs in the strangest places. All in all it is a nice vacation... until now. You find yourselves coming to the end of two weeks rest, and the clouds that have, up until now, been absent, begin to blanket the sky, and a slow drizzly mist permeates everything. Time to go...

(OOC: Were those Tomes given magical bonuses? If not, let me know by email, and I'll assign them. Also, I rolled your attempt to overcome spell resistance Figment, and you got a 9)

Figment
Monday September 24th, 2001 2:59:40 PM

Failing to identify the sword, the mage tries again until successful - unless he senses the attempt is futil. (Spell does not affect Con nor does it say you cannot attempt multiple times. Over the course of 2 weeks I'd say he could try maybe 70 times - assuming he'd use all 1st level slots. Of course, he wouldn't do that)

Ingrge
Monday September 24th, 2001 6:59:18 PM

Ingrge takes time out as well to spar with Lian, K'narra, and anyone else who would like the excersize and even takes some time out to sho K'narra some basic spells that she might like to try someday.

During Ingrge' sparring with Lian, He also spends a small amount of time giving Lian a brief bio.

>>I truly remember nothing before that except for vague memories of my mother and a small village. I was found at the very young age of 8, which is extremely young for a woods elf, along side my dead parents, by a group of Folbre’s tavern maidens as they were coming south to aid in the running of his inn, in The tree of Parting. I don’t remember anything about my parent's death or even what might have caused their deaths. The maidens brought me to the Inn, where, Folbre made the decision to take me in. I was always very quick-witted, very nimble. And while trying to be helpful around the inn, tended to be underfoot a lot. You would think that being exposed to the excitement of a famous inn would be a never-ending source of entertainment for a growing boy, no matter what race, but I tended to be a loner and some what morose. Many children tried to befriend me, but none wanted to be around someone who did not want to play. As I grew, I became more withdrawn and sullen and what friends I had managed to acquire over the years wanted little to do with me. Finally after living for 30 years at the Inn, Folbre decided that they were not going to be able to care for me any longer. Having made this decision they sent me northward to an enclave of elves, in the Culver wood, for integration into elven society.

Back in the North and surrounded, totally, by my own kind (sort of), I went about the daily grind of becoming a functional and beneficial part of elven society. Which, for me, was not an easy thing to accomplish. There were still times where I was extremely morose and the elves just didn’t understand how this could be. I did, however, manage to make a few lasting friends and like all youths we got into normal troubles and scrapes

Olana
Monday September 24th, 2001 8:05:39 PM

"I don't think it would do any harm to have a quick scout around," says Olana to Milo after heeding the elder elf's words "and get a taste for the place."
She makes sure that they do not stray too far.
"I've lived on the borders of this forest since birth," she adds. "It's not like a normal forest, and you have to be careful. You can get lost very easily. Paths turn on themselves, landmarks disappear, and surprises appear around every corner. Magical beasts lurk where you least expect, so you have to keep your wits about you."
Then she finishes with soft laughter.
"But there are wonderful things too."

Lian may overhear some of this, which should add to his perception of Olana being from a south Culverwood elven tribe, along with her dress and manner. She seems most puzzled when observing him fight, her own ways of combat being those of the sword and the bow.

Brother Bertram
Monday September 24th, 2001 11:57:42 PM

Admiring the fighting style of the young elf, Bertram formally introduces himself, telling briefly of his being a Temple Guard in Domi's service and now out walking the land keeping an eye out for war, and of course, evil upon the land. Bertram enjoys the relaxing time, smiling alot and getting to know everyone in the company better.

K'Nara
Tuesday September 25th, 2001 5:17:54 PM

Two weeks of relative peace and uninterrupted training under the auspices of not one but two respected elves left the human bladesinger a good deal more confident in her abilities to properly intermix her swordwielding with spellcasting.

"We will get our butts back to Perpaguil as soon as we safely can," K'Nara told the other Talons, "There are those children I wanna check up on...and we need to see if we can't make sure you-know-who is safe now, too." She made sure that her saddlebags and backpack were properly packed and secured, then went and thanked Lian's master for allowing them sanctuary within the glen.

"Now, let's mount up an' move out, Talons..!" she ordered, hopping onto her stalwart Poki's back. Then K'Nara leaned down and held a hand out to Milo, grinning. "Sir..? Your ride is ready..!"

Milo  d20+10=25
Tuesday September 25th, 2001 6:29:38 PM

Towards the last half of the second week, Milo begins to get bored, finding the considerable boundaries of the glade to be too confining for even one of his stature. So much so, that when K'nara makes her offer of assistance, the halfling, with a smile on his face, practically charges Poki, tumbling into the air, and up into the saddle behind her. "Thanks mister Nel'dorath... see you later." Almost like a child, Milo seems quite anxious to get going, hugging K'nara from behind in preparation for what he hopes will be great speed. (OOC: Made Tumble check at DC 25)

Lian
Tuesday September 25th, 2001 8:03:58 PM

Bidding farewell to his mentor, Lian, produces his own horse, from one end of the glade, and after mounting up, silently nods to signal his readiness. Though outwardly calm, a gleam in the young elf's eye betrays an adventurous spirit.

On the Road Again... Just Can't Wait... (DM Chris)
Tuesday September 25th, 2001 8:14:00 PM

Nel'dorath addresses the group, "A couple days north from here is a tiny village of humans in the midst of the wood. I hear they make a wonderful blackberry wine. In any case, I understand that several other paths intersect the village leading to all parts of the Culverwood."

As the group mounts up and prepares to leave, Nel'dorath sits silently atop the stone in the middle of the glade in silent meditation. Then suddenly he springs up to stand, "Fare thee well Emerald Talons... the times ahead will most assuredly be perilous for us all. Mind yourselves lest you get swept aside in greater events yet to come." With that, the elf leaps impossibly high, spinning into the air, and then with a blur, he is gone.

Before the group lays a single path leading north from the glade.

(As party leader, K'nara would you please establish the riding order. Single file.)

Olana
Wednesday September 26th, 2001 11:17:04 AM

Olana mounts up, also eager to be off. Maybe she'd get a chance to find out what happened to her own people after their expulsion from Emerald by that nasty dragon.

The thought of Parnoth made her wrinkle her nose in distaste, so she put it to the back of her mind and resumed her cheery smile.

"Fluet - have you got a ride?" she asked.

Figment
Wednesday September 26th, 2001 2:12:21 PM

The mage grins as he once again effortlessly mounts his fine steed and friend. His love for the beast is obvious.

Brother Bertram
Wednesday September 26th, 2001 8:40:54 PM

Bertram mounts his pony, eyeing the beast warily. His steed had a tendency to disobey when least expected. Seeing that there was to be no problems, or at least for the moment, Bertram readies himself for the journey ahead.

K'Nara
Thursday September 27th, 2001 7:00:11 AM

K'Nara and Milo--on her horse, Poki--lead the way through the Culverwood. Everyone else (also on horseback) follows in this order: Brother Bertram, Lian, Ingrge, Figment, Flueterflam, and Olana. (However, it's possible that Fluet & Olana are sharing a horse...I've lost count of how many the party has now. ;D)

K'Nara put the pace of the party's departure from the glade at a steady walk. As they left, she told the others to keep talk at a minimum and, then, try to whisper--there was no way of knowing what types of agents Parnoth could have salted the Culverwood with during their time of exile. Hopefully they'd be able to make Perpaguil in two days.

Flueterflam
Thursday September 27th, 2001 12:04:22 PM

Fluet mounts any mighty steed that may be available. However, if there are no horses left, the bard replies, "Sure, I'll ride with you. If you don't mind, that is?"

Milo
Thursday September 27th, 2001 7:05:52 PM

Milo sits as comfortably behind K'nara as possible, and spends the greater part of his time with eyes and ears open to the sounds of the wood. Occasionally he can be heard muttering silent prayers to Alemi.

Lian
Thursday September 27th, 2001 7:12:22 PM

Riding silently in the middle the party, Lian pays close attention to everything around him. The trees, the flowers, the sounds of the animals, and when seen, the animals themselves. Entering a world of distraction, away from the peace and serenity of the glade, he struggles to remain centered and focused on the journey at hand.

The Heart of Darkness... (DM Chris)
Thursday September 27th, 2001 7:18:47 PM

Traveling along the north bound path is relatively peaceful for the larger part of the day. The pleasant, earthy fragrance of loam and fern fill the air, the sun is missing, but a gentle breeze picks up, blowing cloaks about, and refreshing the mind, and the sounds of animal and insect life are present throughout the day. However, as evening begins to close in, the wood seems to change, almost imperceptably, in demeanor.

Olana takes up rear guard after telling K'Nara up front to expect the unexpected in the spooky forest of Culverwood.
Despite the possibilities of danger, though - she can't help being happy - trees, trees, back in the trees!

As the groups leaves the mage offers "The short sword is very resistant to magical inquiry. I did get the impression that it is a +2 weapon - but that's it. There is more to learn.".

The mage rides with the group, taking in the surrounding forest. "It's so nice to be back outside - even if there is danger.".

Sensing that something is changed, and noticing the party going on alert status, the mage prepares himself, looks around, and listens carefully (12,19).

Darkness falls... (DM Chris)
Monday October 1st, 2001 3:09:55 AM

Riding into what appears to be a very dense portion of the Culverwood, Lian, Ingrge, and Olana are suddenly aware of the transition from day animal noises to evening animal noises. A short time when things grow quiet while the one group of animals is bedding down and the other is just waking up. The one thing that is missing however, are the nocturnal noises. It is like a pause in the play that doesn't ever end. Throughout the wood, Lian spots a number of clusters of tiny flying insects that happily swarm whosoever is unlucky enough to find themselves in their midst. The horses are starting to grow weary as the light continues to fade. (OOC: I need to know, for no specific reason, who is carrying the new sword, and where they keep it.)

K'Nara
Monday October 1st, 2001 6:43:58 AM

"We'd best pitch a camp, then," K'Nara said with authority, but with a humorous look at the tired halfling she was riding with, "...or Milo here may end up one flat halfling after falling of the horse and getting trampled upon by everyone else..!" She turned to Olana.

"Is this a good place to camp..?" K'Nara asked the ranger. If the ranger's opinion was yes, then K'Nara would order the party to quickly set up camp. If not, Olana had better use her ranger's Wilderness Lore and find the Talons a good spot to set up an overnight camp.

(OOC: K'Nara still has the short sword--it is inside the backpack that she wears. She hasn't had a request from any of the party members to be given the sword yet, so she's still holding onto it.)

Monday October 1st, 2001 11:13:35 AM

Although pleased to once again be joined with his equestrian companion, the mage is quite ready to make camp. He is suprisingly fresh for such a long ride - even though he is clearly tired. "Kind of nice to not have to replentish magic tomorrow moring. Hope it stays that way....". He makes his camp and eats from his prepared rations (Note: Figment would have made plenty of "gourmet" rations for the group to take on their journey - say 1 weeks supply).

"So K'Nara, I'd say we need to get some of these handkerchiefs for our new members - to prevent prying eyes and ears. Maybe I can speak to those who provided them and learn how to craft them myself for future use?".

As the evening winds down, he finds out what watch he gets, and prepares to sleep.

(Listen and Spot as often as elvenly possible) Lian more or less knows what to look for, diverting his attentions to the swarms and thier increase or decrease through the night.

"I will watch the last half of the night, if that is not already taken by someone more adept in nature, like Olana perhaps."

Pre-Dawn Rider... (DM Chris)  d4=3
Wednesday October 3rd, 2001 3:23:06 AM

The group settles into camp quite easily. With Olana's wilderness expertise, a comfortable yet secluded camp location is determined. In fact, it gives the group a pretty good view of the trail they have been following without revealing their location. The first couple of watches pass without instance, allowing the group to set into their routine of watch, wake, sleep, and so on. It isn't until the third watch, when K'nara and Milo sit in the cool early morning air, that a sound is heard. The thunder of hooves can be heard vaguely in the distance, as if a rider is approaching on the trail at breakneck speed.

(At this point, Milo and K'nara are straining to hear this, so the sound isn't great, however, I will allow sleeping PCs to make a Listen check at DC 30 to wake up.)

With this, K'Nara slipped off to get a better view of the road--maybe even possibly listen in on the approaching rider.

Thursday October 4th, 2001 12:29:53 AM

The air suddenly gets much colder, and everyone's breath turns to steam as they wait in silent anticipation of the approaching rider. The trees here seem much more ominous than they had previously, and a breeze that nobody can feel causes them to sway back and forth. The sound of the horseman grows louder and louder, until it is nearly like thunder in your ears. From down the trail, the rider breaks into view. At first glance, it appears to be a humanoid covered from head to toe in shining plate armor that seems to produce a dim nimbus of light all its own. The rider is bent over its steed which races forward, a huge black stallion. The armor is delicate and the rider seems too thin to be human, perhaps an elf, though something about the rider doesn't seem right, and a chill moves quickly up everyone's spine as they watch his rapid approach. About mid morning however, the group stumbles upon a grisly sight. The brush and foliage around the trail is laid down for about fifty feet on either side to a spread of thirty feet. What appears to be about a half dozen elves lay strewn about the makeshift clearing, dead. The sound of flies buzzing can be heard everywhere, and the stench is horrible. (Knowledge-Nobility/Royalty, Knowledge Arcana plus Int). "That was not natural. Elven armor it was wearing, riding a black steed, was translucent, and instilled fear upon proximity and gaze. Hmmm.". He reports whatever insight he has to the group.

The mage falls back into a fitful sleep and replentishes his invisibility spell in the morning. Thinking better of it he drops his cantrip 'ghost sound' and replaces it with Resistance as the very thought of netherwold creatures simply give him the shivers.

As they ride closer to the macaab scene the mage's sense of dread increases greatly. Seeing the sight he decides that his irrational response will be best overcome by facing this new mance head on. He begins to investigate the sight. He tries to determine how long the victims have been dead, what city they came from, were they adventurers or just common folk, where might they have been going, what were they doing, etc. "Look for clues folks, it would appear we may have to face a horrible enemy and this may be our only opportunity to learn more before we do.".

I'd say putting it on one of these poor souls would be a good way to rid ourselves of it. Once the bard can finally overcome those sick feelings, he helps the others in looking for any clues, although he stays near the edge of the clearing. He looks mainly for any natural thing out of the ordinary, as opposed to anything about the bodies that appears strange. (OOC: Knowledge nature DC 11)

Fluet mutters to himself the entire time claiming that the smell is affecting his concentration.

Lian
Wednesday October 10th, 2001 11:39:23 AM

New to the sight of such carnage, Lian turns to one of the nearest bushes, and completely emptys the contents of his stomach there. "I had no idea... do you see this sort of thing alot?"

Milo  d20=18
Wednesday October 10th, 2001 11:41:13 AM

Sliding off the back of Poki, Milo moves in quickly, moving from corpse to corpse checking the bodies, and trying to figure out exactly how they died. (OOC: Made an unskilled heal check DC 18)

Picking apart the dead... (DM Chris)
Wednesday October 10th, 2001 11:52:00 AM

Moving around the site, Olana finds the tracks from what looks like, several large animals. Looks like two different canines, and a cat of some sort... but it doesn't make sense, the creatures that made these tracks would be enormous for their species. After examining the tracks himself, Fleuterflam can concur with Olana's assessment. Milo confirms that the elves appear to have been torn apart and chewed on by something with large teeth...

Figment
Wednesday October 10th, 2001 12:48:17 PM

The mage places the ring on one of the fingers left attached to a hand. "I'm not sure what mission we have in front of us, but I'd say a proper burial would be in order before moving on.". The mage scans the area where the grass is pushed back. He tries to determine what type of magical effect would do this sort of thing. "Looks like some type of power was at work here - and emanated outward. Perhaps an outward wave of power. From the looks of terror I'd say it was evil for sure. I have no gifts that will allow me to divine what happened here. Perhaps Bertram?". He also scans the area for items of interest. Possessions, etc. Were these people robbed or just slaughtered?

Ingrge
Wednesday October 10th, 2001 4:36:52 PM

Nodding as Olanna and Fluet make their pronouncements, Ingrge voices his thought. I would say then that our shniy friend of this morning was not responsible for this carnage as I had first presumed. (OOC - Any register of magic in the area other than from the party?)

Olana  d20+10=24 d20+12=21
Wednesday October 10th, 2001 4:45:07 PM

"It was a creature attack by the looks of it - big," announces the ranger elf, "like dire wolves or giant cats - unnaturally big."

Moving over to Lian, she whispers -
"Don't worry - you'll get used to it. And pay no mind to Ingrge's language. He was brought up at the Tree of Parting. Lots of gruff visitors there, so he swears like a sailor."

After winking at Ingrge, she moves off to see if she can find a stream close by, on K'Nara's request, and keeps an eye out for directional tracks, determined to put aside the horror of what they have just seen.

Lian  d20+2=16
Wednesday October 10th, 2001 4:46:14 PM

Making sure none of them are one of his friends or anyone he may know, Lian just flops down where ever he may be standing as if in shock and disbelief about what he has just seen. He shakes his head, clears his eyes with the palms of his hands, and looks back towards the carnage.
"You must see this often enough for it not to horrify you so, Lady K'nara." "I am concerned that I may end up this way soon!"
"Brother Bertrum, may I help bury the departed?"

(OOC; Int Check to see if I may know any of these unfortunate souls, 14 plus 2 for my int. modifier. TOTAL OF 16)

K'Nara
Wednesday October 10th, 2001 4:56:55 PM

The leader of the Emerald Talons said nothing, but set about the grim task of helping to bury the dead.

Brother Bertram
Wednesday October 10th, 2001 10:14:17 PM

Bertram raises his head slowly as the others speak. "The spectral figure we observed could have been a harbinger of this horrific act. Just occured to me that might be why it appeared. And yes, Lian I would appreciate your help. And Friend Figment, there is no doubt this was an act of evil, and it must be avenged!"

Milo
Thursday October 11th, 2001 11:08:56 AM

Milo is silent throughout the prodeedings, working with K'nara to match body parts, mainly by the bits of clothing they possess, and then finally burying the dead. Looking at K'nara when the job is done, the dimuntive patriarch has a tear in his eye, "Justice shall be served, I swear it on Alemi's white beard." Turning, the halfling moves towards Poki to remount.

Clean-Up.... (DM Chris)
Thursday October 11th, 2001 11:16:14 AM

It isn't long before Olana does indeed find a creek that burbles along quite rapidly, though the animal tracks disappear after getting only a few feet away from the site. Examining the way the grass was laid down, Figment is forced to evaluate from the obvious boot tracks in several areas. It really just looks as though the elves put up a good fight, funny though, they don't seem to be wearing any weapons, just empty scabbards. Ingrge is certain that there are no magical emanations here other than those coming from his companions, and K'nara and Milo indeed finish their grave digging. It is early-afternoon by now, and the bodies are set to be buried.

Figment (And miles to go before I sleep...)
Thursday October 11th, 2001 12:57:08 PM

The mage shakes his head as he evaluates. He looks up at the trees to see if the attackers came from up above - and may have left that way. "Looks like something fell upon them from above. Either they flew in, were gated or teleported in, climbed through the trees and dropped in, or in some other way did not touch the ground. Due to the marks of the grass I'd say it was some sort of gate as the power starts here and moves outward. These elves were armed but all they had was taken away. Funny they left the scabbards... I would suspect a powerful mage, sorcerer, cleric, or even a druid as there were animals involved - although I doubt a druid would do this to elven kind especially as they live well with the land. The animals were either controlled by someone or were magical constructs that were dismissed once the battle was over. With our luck I'd say we're not going to have to look too hard to discover who did this. Trouble seems to follow us around pretty regulaerly...".

Olana
Thursday October 11th, 2001 1:54:47 PM

The ranger returned to the others.
"I've found a brook. Should I put the ring in it? Or has someone already disposed of it? As for the tracks, they disappear after a few feet beyond this site. I would have said it was strange, but this IS Culverwood after all."

Olana helps with the burial, whispering her own woodland prayers for the dead elves.
After a violent death - it was a hard road to Arvanaith, if you reached it at all....

Ingrge  d20+3=23
Thursday October 11th, 2001 2:04:13 PM

Listening to the findings and making some educated guesses (knowledge roll 23), Ingrge looks around to see if he can tell if there are any humanoid footprints that don't match up with the elves or their own. Mostly he is looking for prints of unshod feet. Whether he finds any or not, he walks up to K'narra and whispers something in her ear. (email)

Brother Bertram
Thursday October 11th, 2001 8:04:07 PM

After finishing the grisly task of burying the unfortunate elves, Bertram spends the rest of the time seeing to his axe and praying for guidance to help solve these grisly murders.

Lian  d20+2=17
Thursday October 11th, 2001 9:30:01 PM

"Figment, what do you mean 'Trouble seems to follow us'? I really do not like this, not at all."
"I would agree though with the accessment about the cleric or druid though."
"I have heard that druids live sparcely though, thier not common, at least in the stories."

(OOC:Int Check to remember any stories of druids in the area; INT of 17)

K'Nara
Friday October 12th, 2001 7:13:17 AM

The tall human bladesinger bent her head to listen to Ingrge's opinion--then did a double-take after he was done.

"Anyone with knowledge in woodlore--scour the immediate area once more...stay within sight...but search for the tiniest of clues to...anything." K'Nara ordered. "I will lend my muscle to burying these brave warriors as soon as Brother Bertram and Milo are done with the ceremony these elves are entitled to." Then, as an afterthought, the redhead nodded Olana's way.

"Indeed, yes, Olana--if that stupid ring isn't already gone, get the hells rid of it, please!"

Flueterflam  d20+10=22
Friday October 12th, 2001 10:26:38 AM

The bard follows K'Nara's request and scouts the perimeter of the area again. He looks for ANYTHING unusual in the area, anything that is remotely NOT natural. (OOC: Nature Knowledge DC 22)

Milo
Friday October 12th, 2001 2:51:33 PM

After saying a few prayers over the bodies, Milo assists in the burial.

Surprise... I'm back... (DM Chris)
Friday October 12th, 2001 3:00:41 PM

Looking throughout the area, Flueterflam finds nothing of even the tiniest interest. Over the course of the next couple hours, the bodies are blessed and buried. In the mean time, Olana is able to take the ring, and attach it firmly to a branch that floats quickly away from her and the group for that matter. Just as things are winding up, the group hears the sound of huffing, and the quick tread of heavy feet coming up the path from the way they came. From around the bend appears none other than Dakar. Smiling broadly, he slows to a jog, and then a walk as he rejoins the group. "Hey... whats goin' on here, from the looks of your faces, I'd say you just came back from a funeral. Sorry to keep you all waiting, but I've had all the contemplation I can take, I'm ready for the road again." Dakar seems genuinely cheerful, which is a pleasant change from his past behavior. "I ran into a strange elf when I came out into the glade... he said that you guys took this trail, and I've been tryin' to catch up since."

(OOC: Everyone should post once more before Monday...)

Figment
Friday October 12th, 2001 4:33:07 PM

The mage concerns himself with the secrecy between Ingrge and K'Nara as it is very uncommon, but then simply dismisses the issue entirely as there seem more pressing things to worry about.

As the burly dwarven warrior rejoins the group he smiles. "Good to have you and your sword back with us, Dakar. You didn't seem to me to be the contemplative type. I think it will be good for us to have as much strength as possible to travel this road.".

Flueterflam
Friday October 12th, 2001 5:43:22 PM

"K'Nara, I didn't find anything in the area. But I could have just missed it, although I think it unlikely. ::sigh:: This is all very eerie." The bard helps with any burial that hasn't been completed yet.

Olana
Friday October 12th, 2001 6:31:40 PM

Walking back to join the group after 'losing' the ring, Olana looks surprised on seeing the dwarf Dakar.
"Well hello!" she says with what would have been a cheery grin, if not for the current circumstances.
"And Figment is right. There's something nasty afoot, and it isn't us."

Ingrge
Friday October 12th, 2001 7:03:37 PM

Aiding with the preparation of the dead, Ingrge seems preoccupied and worried like you haven't see him since Madame Collosum's. Working with Bertram he makes sure that each corpse is blessed and sprinkled with holy water and then places a silver peice in each one's mouth before burial.

Lian  d20+2=9
Friday October 12th, 2001 9:09:59 PM

Watching Ingrge's strange ritual, placing a silver piece in the mouth, Lian askes with an inquisitive look, "Ingrge, my friend, he is not in need of the silver piece."

Taking a squinty peek at Dakar, who everyone seems to know, Lian doesn't take much more notice of him other than the silent nod of 'Hello.', and a raised eyebrow.

Then Lian sits down and begins to meditate again in the most silent corner of the camp.

(OOC:Trying to remember about stories of rituals like Ingrge's; Int Check of 9)

Brother Bertram
Friday October 12th, 2001 10:14:00 PM

Bertram looks up at the sound of Dakar's arrival with mixed emotions. He was glad to see the servant of Domi alive and well but still had concerns of his rash attitudes. Shrugging it off, Bertram smiles and nods in his direction, then goes back prayers.

K'Nara
Saturday October 13th, 2001 8:57:36 AM

Though not even onescore years in the Wold, K'Nara--by the time the Talons were finished with burying the last body--looked a good deal older than a human her age should have.

"Olana...let's scout about for a different location for a camp." she told the ranger in a tired voice. "I...don't have the heart to stay where these poor, brave souls met their end."

Lian
Sunday October 14th, 2001 3:09:34 AM

"Lady K'nara, may I join you?"
He looks at Olana, as if looking for okay from the ranger.
