Where should loyalty lie?

On the Road Again - DM JK
Tuesday November 27th, 2001 8:50:19 AM

A month has gone by since the group has been elevated to the Dragon Consortium. For the most part, that time has been spent making public appearances and trying to help people get back into a normal routine. For the most part this has been accomplished. However, there are still some problems, most notable has been the acceptance of the Cult Gods by many people in Plateau City. Despite this unfortunate turn, peace and order have been restored for the most part. The group has heard very little from Sturtavent or the shunned members of the Dragon Consortium. No doubt a showdown will occur eventually, but for the time being politics have been set aside.

Of the council you have learned that Valiano, Leunenon, and Shanleigh are honest and seek to rule in the best way possible. Valiano and Leunenon sincerely believe that Sturtavent was doing a bad job. Shanleigh didn't object to Sturtavent exactly, but she has long been an advocate that the High Lord Mayor held too much power. Instead she favors council rule where no one person can dominate.

The other four members of the council are a slightly different matter. Grendalf, Malik, Peuroif, and Huobeth have all switched to worship of the Cult gods. Malik and Peuroif have converted to Ga'al, and their ties to Aisildur seem suspicious at best. Huobeth serves the One, and seems to be a fair person despite loyalty to a cult god. In a way she reminds the group of Kat, the witch who served Pantheon but was still a good person. Grendalf is the worst. He follows Marteaus. He also dominates the other three that serve the cult gods. They vote as he directs, and he could dominate the council. However, he seems content to let Valiano run the show for now. He seems like a dangerous person and you know where his loyalties lie, but he has not actually done nothing illegal or even against the interests of the city. At least not yet.

Fortunately the Storm Dragons haven't been forced into the political arena. For now, the council hasn't asked you to do anything distasteful, and Sturtavent has yet to do anything to upset the situation. Now that order has been restored in Plateau City, the Council wishes to turn its focus on the countryside and the other cities in New Elenna. As part of this process, The Storm Dragons have been asked to go to Floating City to help reconnect the two cities. You were asked to travel by road so that you could see the condition of the country and return with a report.

You are now on the road about half way to your destination. Many homes have been abandoned. Farms have been burned and destroyed. With the heavy influx of people to Plateau City, you were aware of the problem, but seeing it first hand brings it all home in a horrifying way. So many people have suffered.

"So this is what following Martaeus means. And they allow a follower of him on the council. Amazing. I'd never make it as a politician. How can the people support such a man as this?" The warrior rides on, horrified at the destruction - but worse, the lack of people.

Jus
Tuesday November 27th, 2001 2:44:52 PM

Jus' mind is busy working out the impact of what he sees. "Where did everyone go? I didn't notice an influx of travelers into the city."

Jus contemplates some more, "Whatever happened, the cities are headed for dire straights. There are almost no farms and therefore no food. One of the new 'gods'," Jus can't help putting sarcasm in this title, "had better start conjuring food for the masses. Which, of course, will unfortunately win the favor of more people."

Jus rides on quietly, trying to foresee what will occur in the future, discussing the Wold's history with Nonam [and anyone else that wants to join] in an attempt to find a parallel.

Cantos
Tuesday November 27th, 2001 3:34:23 PM

Cantos looks across the destruction of the countryside with disdain and sadness,"whomever has done this or brought it to be should be beaten as one does an unrully child."

Nonam
Wednesday November 28th, 2001 2:02:32 AM

"They should create some sort of rural police force to keep the area outside the city in check. And even though it isn't a pleasant situation, it's nice to be away from the city and politics."

Qualde
Wednesday November 28th, 2001 3:13:25 AM

"When trouble happens, isolated people run for safety. Police force help, yes, and perhaps other incentives." Qualde squints at the charred remains of what might have been a barn. She resists the urge to tug her hood lower over her eyes, knowing that she has to accustom herself to the brightness of day sometime. "Resources to help rebuild, to draw people back. Sometimes greed serve to bolster courage where protection fail. Provided Council and cities see sense in spending now to prevent famine later." A delicate snort expresses her opinion of that likelihood.

"Police also help make safe for trade. Maybe establish protected waystations? Some churches might help with that, take some burden from government."

We Can Work It Out (DM JK)
Wednesday November 28th, 2001 7:56:14 AM

As the group ponders ways to improve the rural situation, you see a cart stopped in the road ahead. It seems that a farmer is being dragged out of his cart by a group of men wearing long red robes.

Seeing the scene, the warrior increases the pace of his horse and approaches the group. He says flatly but dangerous tone "I require an explaination for what you are doing , right now. And you will stop until I'm satisfied.". (Intimidation, CHA, DC 20).

Cantos
Wednesday November 28th, 2001 8:19:01 PM

Cantos swiftly notches an arrow to his bow and stays about 30 foot away from the nearest robed individual. "You will stop NOW," he says flatly.

Thursday November 29th, 2001 12:50:58 AM

Qualde follows Gareth at a slower pace, searching the area for an intact building, saddled mounts, or some other indication of where the robed men came from or how they got here. (Spot=17)

Addinein
Thursday November 29th, 2001 1:30:06 AM

Addinein follows up behind Gareth, or as close as he can. Wondering about their new found status, Addinein wonders if they should just announce who they are, and assume that their name does something for them in this situation.

(sorry about not posting the last few days, phone lines were out) Tericus moves behind Gareth and observes quietly, looking to see if the robed men are wearing any holy symbols(spot check of 23)

I'll cry instead - DM JK
Thursday November 29th, 2001 9:24:29 AM

As the party investigates, they discover that the red robed men are priests of Caeroldra, specifically the Hands of Love sect.

Their leader explains, "It seems that this farmer's wife was killed during the time of turmoil. The farmer has finally gotten his affairs in order and is moving to the city. So obviously, he didn't love her or in his grief he would have committed suicide so that he could have stayed with her forever. We intend to help him rectify the situation, so that his love will shine as a beacon of hope in this weary age. Though I wouldn't expect a bunch of adventurers to understand. You obviously know nothing of love."

The farmer looks relieved, and he makes no attempt to deny the charges against him.

Gareth
Thursday November 29th, 2001 12:07:58 PM

The warrior's brow furrows a bit. "So, you're saying you are planning to kill him so he can be with his wife? Did I hear that correctly?".

Gareth, cont.
Thursday November 29th, 2001 12:32:33 PM

The warrior activates his boots and gently flies off the horse and lands next to the red robed priests. He does not yet make any moves toward his weapons.

Qualde  d20+6=14 d20+5=21
Thursday November 29th, 2001 7:05:35 PM

Qualde grits her teeth, recognizing the signs of an argument that has been bandied about by certain of her House priests for years. The drow knees her mount forward and pushes her hood back to expose the symbol at her brow. "Brothers, I am Qualde, and I love our Lady as you do. I travel with Storm Dragons," she introduces in her smokey voice, "who wish only to help people of Elenna. This too is love.

"I applaud your enthusiasm in service of love. Ask you to consider: if you take this man from the Wold, you cut all chance that he will add more love to it. He will be with his wife in due time; do not deprive those he can still love in mortal plane." (Diplomacy=14) The priestess watches their reactions carefully (Sense Motive=21), trying to determine if they really think they are helping the farmer.

Cantos
Thursday November 29th, 2001 11:23:24 PM

Cantos looks at the priests, " I have killed to protect my friends, my family and myself and all of this is out of love but if you harm this man I swear by all that is holy I will kill you on the spot....now move on and may your goddess bless you....GET!!!"

Nonam
Friday November 30th, 2001 7:15:07 AM

Thinking the situation is well under control, Nonam grins at the red robes.

Jus
Friday November 30th, 2001 7:40:31 AM

Jus listens with great interest as the party talks with the clerics in each of their own way. Of course, Jus isn't about to hold back himself.

"I feel I may be entering into a great argument, but I must say something." Jus continues speaking loudly, regardless if he is ignored by the red robed priests. "When Lady Caeroldra placed her hands upon Gareth and I, she told us that 'Love Conquers All'. We must bring the strength of Caeroldra's love to one another so that we may defeat this time of darkness. Don't kill this man, lest you remove another warrior from Caeroldra's army. For without his wife, his love, his heart is lonely. But with this lonely heart he will seek love again -- and will therefore be a strong disciple of Caeroldra, spreading her love to others!"

I'll be on my way - DM JK
Friday November 30th, 2001 7:46:25 AM

The five red robes quickly step away from the farmer at Cantos' threat. One responds, "See, hate obviously rules your lives. How can such talk spread love or even happiness? We wish nothing but the fulfillment of love. How can you understand this if you run around making threats to kill?"

Another looks to Qualde, "Perhaps it is as you say. Some make such arguments, but the love of sacrifice overwhelms other types. To give your life for the one that you love shows terrific compassion. If everyone showed such love, there would be no need for people like you adventurers."

Qualde judges that the men are quite sincere. This isn't some veiled excuse for robbery. They really think the man should go on to be with his wife.

Everyone ignores Gareth. Everyone except for the farmer that is. He's sitting on his cart nodding vigorously that they meant exactly that.

The priests have backed away from the farmer. He is in no immediate danger. But if you left...

Teriucus
Friday November 30th, 2001 9:15:47 AM

"Let me ask you one thing." Tericus says to the farmer. "Do you think that your wife wants you to die? What if she doesnt and is angry at you when you reunite with her? What then?"

Gareth
Friday November 30th, 2001 11:05:15 AM

The warrior steps directly in front of the leader and looks him straight in the eye - so as to not be ignored. This include grabbing him and holding him in place if he tries to move. "So tell me, priest. How many others around here have you helped with this - "problem" of being separated from their spouse?"

Nonam
Friday November 30th, 2001 11:58:58 AM

Nonam looks over at Jus, "And when exactly did Caeroldra touch you and Gareth?"

Addinein
Friday November 30th, 2001 2:36:25 PM

Addinein keeps an eye out on the surroundings, while listening to the various conversations that are being conducted. Addinein is not really sure how to conduct himaelf amongst the arguments going on. For lack of any other grounding, he moves to back-up his sister, since there has been no immediate attacks. Muttering under his breath, "as luck would have it".

Cantos  d20+12=29
Friday November 30th, 2001 3:53:37 PM

Cantos looks at the leader of the red robes and snarls, "LOVE, you dare speak of love when you would end a man's life as your clerics ended my own mother's life so many years ago. You are so blind and pitiful--you would be better off if I killed you now and showed you my merciful love." Cantos places the bow back over his shoulder and draws his rapier and steps up on the closest red robe," Let me show you my love, my love of life and my disgust of you... or would you rather flee and never return for so help me by all the gods I will kill you all slowly and painfully if a single person in this aera is killed again by anyone--I will see it as my personal mission to find you and punish you if ANYONE around here is harmed. Have I made myself clear?" Cantos deftly slices the letters C and B on the man's robes. "I am Cantos the Bard and you will do no more here... I SAID LEAVE!"

Jus
Saturday December 1st, 2001 4:35:23 AM

Jus steps back, realizing that some members of the party definitely want to make a point [literally in Cantos' case].

In quiet whispers, Jus replies to Nonam, "It was one of the times we visited the World Serpent Inn -- the second time, I believe. She was sitting with a couple of men... I wonder if they were gods? One was dressed in... white I think. The other was... maybe a paladin? It was quite a long time ago; but I definitely remember her and her touch on my shoulder." I'll Be Back - DMJK
Monday December 3rd, 2001 8:30:03 AM

The red robe that Gareth grabs says, "None. What do you think we do, hunt down the unloving? We met him on the road. We could sense that he wanted to follow his wife but lacked the courage to take the step on his own."

The red robes immediately back off as Cantos starts chopping letters into people. Quickly they all turn and bolt. After they are several yards down the road, the one with letters cut into his robe turns and yells back, "We'll remember this, Cantos the Bard!"

The farmer claps his hands together, "Oh, thank you very much! I won't be needing this anymore..." He turns and takes a short length of rope from the back of his wagon and tosses it onto the ground. There's a noose tied into the end of it. "My Nellie would slap me around for eternity if I followed her right away."

Nonam
Monday December 3rd, 2001 8:30:56 AM

Nonam shrugs at Jus, "You'd think I'd remember that. Maybe it's because she didn't talk to me."

Tericus
Monday December 3rd, 2001 9:48:02 AM

"Well, that was easy."

Gareth
Monday December 3rd, 2001 10:54:08 AM

the warrior looks at the farmer. "Why would they think you wanted to die? Did you ask them to help? Have you seen these guys before?".

Gareth
Monday December 3rd, 2001 12:48:02 PM

As the clerics of Caeroldra leave he shakes his head. "I wonder, are we wrong in the way we handled them? Seems so unlike something the goddess would condone - from our meeting, I mean.". Turning to Cantos he asks "So what did they do to your family? Was it really them, or some corrupt person 'posing' as a good priest?".

Nonam
Monday December 3rd, 2001 2:22:44 PM

Nonam looks over at Cantos, "You could have picked easier letters. Now let's get going."

Cantos
Monday December 3rd, 2001 9:09:21 PM

Cantos looks at the others the fury fading away slowly until he looks like normal. "Sorry but there are somethings I just cant handle well and that is one of them." He smiles at Nonam "easier letters yes but those he will remember always. As for your question Gareth the truth is I believe they were priets of Coldera but I could be mistaken." Cantos looks around at his friends, " I travel the way I do because it is easier to move than it is to settle down. My father was a farmer and I remember that he would hunt to supply meat for the table, Well one night there was a horrible snowstorm and my father did not return for many days and the village decided that he had probably died as a result of the storm. My mother was crazy with grief and I remember a trio of robes in that color stopping by the farm and talking to my mother. My mother told me to walk towards the stream to the north to fill two water buckets and check for possible signs of my father. I walked with the buckets and lo and behold there walking from the other side of the stream was my fater looking a bit dishelved but what a sight to behold he was alive I was giddy with joy and dropped to my knees to give thanks that he was still alive when we heard a shrill, piercing scream coming from the farm and we both ran as fast as we could to the farm. My father beat me there by a good minute and when I arrived he was cutting my mothers body from a tree where she had been hung, I say had been hung because her hands were tied behind her back but there was a note professing her love for my dead father and a desire to follow and be with him always...was it someone pretending maybe but one thing for sure is these 3 were doing the same and I will not allow it as long as there is breathe in my lungs."

Jus
Tuesday December 4th, 2001 12:05:51 AM

Jus listens to Cantos' sad story, not knowing what to offer except for his friendship.

Qualde
Tuesday December 4th, 2001 2:50:53 AM

Qualde shakes her head, watching the priests run. "Have heard such arguments before, but never so extreme," she tells the farmer. "May ask why leave your home? Why your neighbours leave?" She listens for his response, then suggest, "Go quickly. Live as your wife would have you do, and may Caeroldra fill your days with love."

What Is Life - DMJK
Tuesday December 4th, 2001 9:09:41 AM

The farmer answers Gareth, "Well, that is my noose. Can't say that I didn't think about. Met them fellas on the road, not knowin who they was, and sort of explained things to them cause they seemed interested. Next thing I knew they was wantin to put my neck in the noose right quick. Nothin like somebody else wantin' you dead to make you want to go on livin. Thanks a bunch fellas."

He climbs up in his cart and starts getting his horses together again.

Gareth
Tuesday December 4th, 2001 11:08:39 AM

The warrior frowns at Cantos' story, and Qualde's comments. "I couldn't hack it as a priest. All I know is I think everyone has the right to decide for themselves what to do with their life and nobody else has a say in it - well meaning or not!" Turning to the farmer, he asks, "Is there anything we can help you with before we move on? Any bandits or other baddies terrorising the area?"

Cantos
Tuesday December 4th, 2001 9:47:57 PM

Cantos looks around at his friends and gives a sad smile. " Thanks for listening"

Jus
Wednesday December 5th, 2001 4:44:27 AM

Jus extends his hand to Cantos. "I'm glad to be counted as one, Cantos. And I have no qualms being associated with 'Cantos the Bard!'." Jus shows some fancy footwork, starting to spell out his initials in the air, he stops short as he realizes that what he signed didn't look anything like a 'J'.

Someplace Else - DM JK
Wednesday December 5th, 2001 8:02:39 AM

The farmer goes along his way, and you all continue your journey. The rest of the trip seems relatively uneventful.

As you get closer within 20 or so miles to the Floating City, order seems to have been restored somewhat better. There was devastation, but people are beginning to rebuild. It looks like few farmers left their homes. You soon learn the reason why they feel safe as a heavily armored patrol of about 20 soldiers wearing the colors of Floating City stops you on the road.

Eyeing the drow warily, the captain politely asks, "If you would be so kind as to give me your names, milady and lords, and tell me your destination, I would be most appreciative."

Gareth
Wednesday December 5th, 2001 10:48:39 AM

"Certainly sir, we are the Storm Dragons. You may also know us as The Three, but we recently attained Dragon staus in Plateau City. We have business with the government here - and would very much like to visit our house - which we haven't seen in some time. It is good to see you out on patrol. Things do not fare so well in other regions.".

Qualde
Thursday December 6th, 2001 2:10:59 AM

Qualde returns the captain's stare with a frank appraisal of her own, and answers, "Qualde Breyt'tar," in her husky voice. As her gaze slides past the man to study the rest of the soldiers, she wonders what has prompted them to patrol 20-strong.

Cantos
Thursday December 6th, 2001 2:13:06 AM

Cantos smiles at the patrol as Gareth asnwers the capitans questions.

Nonam
Thursday December 6th, 2001 7:46:45 AM

Filling in the missing details, Nonam responds, "I am Nonam Firstorlast, captain. Our esteemed leader there is Gareth Justinian. Jus, Cantos, Tericus, and Addinein are these others. If you would be so good as to give us your name as well, you are the first group that we've seen helping anyone since we left Plateau City. I thank you for it, but even more I would like to give a good recommendation to your superiors when we reach the Big Float."

In Spite Of All The Danger - DM JK
Thursday December 6th, 2001 8:01:33 AM

The captain nods, "I am Captain Morel of the 10th Heavy Cavalry. It is good to have you coming back to the Big Float, milords. We will leave you to your own affairs now."

The patrol rides away and leaves you to continue your journey. As you near Floating City, you see more patrols and the general situation rapidly improves. You reach the banks to nab a turtle to cross into down, and you realize how easy it would be to defend the Big Float against outsiders. Guards are interviewing those that are waiting in line to go into the city. A soldier comes up to the group. He isn't nearly as polite as Captain Morel. He's not exactly rude, but he seems to have the attitude of someone who has asked the same questions over and over again all day.

"Could I get your names, your reason for coming to Floating City, and a statement of your faith... that is what gods do you worship?" He stands ready to write the answers down in a book.

Nonam
Thursday December 6th, 2001 8:12:02 AM

"I am Nonam Firstorlast. These are my companions the Storm Dragons, though we were known as the Three when we last were in the Big Float. We are here to see how our home fares after the tumult of the past weeks. I follow no gods as a general rule but instead hold to my own council. However, Tericus there is a priest of Teresalia I believe. Qualde was a follower of Domi, but I assure you that she avoided the madness and now puts her faith in the other traditional gods of Wold."

When I get Home - DM JK
Thursday December 6th, 2001 8:18:54 AM

After Nonam's answer the guard writes it all down and nods, "So none of you worships those cult gods? Good. Feel free to enter the city."

After the turtle handler manages to pull the big creature away from Gareth, for whom the beast has an unusual attraction, you find yourself gliding across the lake. The impressive city rises up from the dark water before. It looks magnificent, like nothing evil has happened there.

You step off and have a quick look about. People on the street seem rather quiet, which is relatively new down on the lower levels. Other than that things seem fine, and you can do as you wish in the city.

Tericus
Thursday December 6th, 2001 9:05:38 AM

"Should we go straight to our destination, or should wander around a bit?"

Gareth
Thursday December 6th, 2001 11:40:54 AM

Having grown accustom to the affection the large beasts show for him, he returns the favor by scratching behind the ear of the big turtle (no way he can reach the other one). He has a pleased look on his face as they cross the water and he gets to admire the city from this angle - something he hasn't done in quite a while.

"I'm thinking we stop by the house first guys. We should at least clean up before we present ourselves. Good first impression and all (first time since becoming Dragons).

Cantos
Thursday December 6th, 2001 3:26:22 PM

Cantos nods at Gareths words" Aye a bath and a change of clothes would be nice..lets head to your house."

Jus
Thursday December 6th, 2001 6:43:46 PM

Jus is thrilled to be on the back of a turtle again. "Too bad Onrad's not here to push you into the lake again, Nonam." He looks around to see if he can see the man that shuttled them across the first time -- so long ago.

"I wouldn't mind visiting a couple of particular inns again; I hope they are still around."

Qualde
Friday December 7th, 2001 1:35:22 AM

Qualde takes the turtle time as an opportunity to gawk at the sight of the Floating City. Touristic impulses satisfied, she asks, "Send message ahead that we seek audience? Is courteous, but gives time to hide bodies or run away --"

Nonam
Friday December 7th, 2001 8:26:42 AM

"Well, I say that we go to the Giggling Ghost to see Daphne. She's been dead long enough we can get by without cleaning up first, and it's on the way to house. Then I propose a good night's sleep before we do any of this political mumbo jumbo. As long as we meet who we should meet, it doesn't much matter to me when we do it. We gave our names to enough people on the way in that if anyone wanted to hide from us that they could already be doing it by now. Or if they wanted to see us right away, they could have been waiting at landing."

Evening turns into early night as the group debates the possibilities.

Tericus
Friday December 7th, 2001 8:54:18 AM

"I say we go home first. Its been a long road, and I for one need a little rest. If anyone wants us, they know where to find us."

Gareth
Friday December 7th, 2001 11:52:16 AM

"I'd love to see Daphne, and since it's on the way it sounds like a good place for a meal. Besides, a Dragon group showing up might be good for their business.". A sly smirk comes across the warrior's face. "And maybe I'll get a chance to see Bof again... You know know, that half-orc Black Dragon that goaded us into a fight our first time in the place.". He shakes his head at the notion, knowing that with their mission they need to be on good behavior for sure.

Jus
Friday December 7th, 2001 12:23:10 PM

"Agreed, Nonam. It's been to long since we've been over to see Daphne; I hope the new cult priests didn't do something stupid to her."

[DMJK]

[dang it! I forgot to give out xp and treasure for the last scene. During the dragon ceremony, everyone received a Knight of the Realm ring. This device allows verbal communication over any distance with any other knight of the realm who is also wearing such a ring, though generally they are only used to speak to members of your own party. Yours are keyed to recognize only the new knights of the realm, of which you are the first. These rings do count against your magic item ring slot. So it's one of the two. This turned troublesome for the gold dragons, so they made earrings. Valiano made a huge deal about this during the award ceremony about how they shunned the outer symbols of their office. It would be best for you guys politically, to wear them for a while... or at least keep it in a pocket til you want it.

and 1100xp ea. + 10% interest for the delay in the award. So 1210 xp each for the total.

To those that sent sheets after the item fiasco, thanks. To those that haven't yet, send them in. You know who you are. And as always send a new one, when an xp award bumps you up a level.]

"We'll go for some rest soon enough, Tericus. The Giggling Ghost is on the way. It's sort of been our tradition to go there first when we enter town. I'm suprised these other two forgot."

Daphne - DM JK
Monday December 10th, 2001 7:29:57 AM

Nonam leads the group along the waterfront and turns down an alley behind the Dead End Fish Market. Soon the group comes out on the slightly wider Cutpurse Road. A left on Rogues Alley and a right on Dagger Point gives you a quick view of the Fence level and brings you right to the front of the Giggling Ghost.

The area seems much the same as it always has save for two things. It is much quieter, and you noticed two small patrols of town guards. Seeing one would have been an odd occurance before.

On stepping into the Giggling Ghost the notion that some things are different fades right away. Daphne clasps her hands in joy as her favorite customers come through the door. She rushes right through the bar and claps her hands in delight. "My friends! Welcome home! It's been so long. I want to hear everything. Happy! Pour some drinks! They're on the house, my friends."

For those that have been here before. Everything seems the exact same. It feels like home. For those that haven't been here, this is a seedy little place. It might be nice for a tavern on the Fence Level because the classes look clean. Other than that, there isn't much good to say. The group can definitely afford better.

Monday December 10th, 2001 11:08:30 AM

The warrior sits down at his "usual" spot and drinks whatever Daphne brings. He greets the barkeep as always and kicks back, feeling - and looking - quite at home. "It's so good to see you Daphne, I hope to trade many stories with you.". He sits with his friends and enjoys the atmosphere, hoping that they can at least for a time just simply relax.

He looks to the new members of the party and Tericus as well - not sure if he's ever told the story. He says "This is where we started. This was the first place we came that welcomed us as a group. We fought some novice Black Dragons here in a bar fight - we were novices too. We always come back here when we enter the city. I figure now that we're no longer novices, we can at the very least give them our patronage whenever possible in repayment for their support. We owe them, even though they would never say such, and did not offer their support expecting anything in return - which is why I for one love to keep coming. I was once quite disfigured and totally untrained in the ways of being polite and 'socially acceptible'. Daphne treated me the same then as she does now. Mean a lot to me...". His words trail off. Considering fully just how fortunate he is to have friends like this.

It is clear to Qualde and Addinein that he would like to ask them something, but he refrains. At least for now.

Cantos
Monday December 10th, 2001 8:44:25 PM

Cantos looks around and smiles broadly," Man I love taverns like this...makes me feel at home." Cantos sits down and orders whatever Gareth is drinking.

Qualde
Tuesday December 11th, 2001 7:21:34 AM

Qualde orders a pale ale from the flighty ghost and follows the others to a table. She perches uncomfortably in her seat, clearly not able to relax, although the reason is not apparent.

"Most Dragons left Plateau," she muses aloud. Her smokey voice certainly fits the ambiance of the tavern. "Will Black still be here in Floating City? How they are likely to react to old consortium/ new consortium business?"

Nonam
Tuesday December 11th, 2001 8:30:51 AM

Sipping the water that Daphne brought him, Nonam answers Qualde as he takes his water from Daphne, "The black dragons were actually kicked out of the consortium some time ago. They were also asked to leave Floating City at the same time. The palace that we staying in when we met you was actually once Black Dragon Castle. Now the city uses it for special guests, dignitaries, and such. Our own mansion is down on the Gold Level. I've stopped by to look at it a few times, but none of us have actually lived in it yet."

Tuesday December 11th, 2001 8:51:54 AM

Happy brings out ale for everyone but Nonam. And she relates the news of the city. It seems the Over and Underlords quickly joined forces to ensure peace after the Amphitemple of Courage collapsed (fell right off the top of the Floating City and sank to the bottom of the lake). They hired extra numbers of guards, partially to ensure the peace and partially to give folks something to do. Many of the soldiers are unruly, but new guards are always under the command of experienced officers. That, and the severe punishments handed out by the military court, has kept trouble to a minimum. They've all heard distrubing stories about Plateau City and that the Dragon Consortium had been disbanded. Daphne says she was afraid that the group would forget about their old haunts.

Happy groans when she says haunt.

The group passes a good bit of time at the Giggling Ghost, but it's soon time to head to the house. Nonam leads the way to the mansion on the Gold Level.

http://www.woldiangames.com/maps/yrth/peninsula/newelenna/floatingcity/floating_city_lvl_2.htm (see #83)

A pair of guards wants to know what you all are doing until a butler opens the door. He reocgnizes you all. "Come in. Come in my lords... and lady. I am Mitchum, your butler. Welcome to your home. I was starting to fear you would never come. If you would be so kind as to allow me to give you the tour." Some time later, you've seen the massive house. 3 floors, 9 bedrooms, 4 baths, a library, a recreation room, a living area, a ballroom, a kitchen, and a dining room.
After the tour Mitchum says, "I will leave you to your rest now. I can have breakfast ready at whatever time you desire. Also I apologize, but I'm the only member of the household staff. It didn't seem prudent to hire anyone but guards since you weren't here.

Tericus
Tuesday December 11th, 2001 9:06:15 AM

Though tired, Tericus suffers through the tour. Once the butler says it's over, Tericus quickly goes to his room and flops on his bed.

Gareth
Tuesday December 11th, 2001 11:44:06 AM

The warrior climbs to his room, checks his gear he left previously, takes off his traveling stuff and bathes. Once he's more presentable he finds his way back to a common room, hoping to find some time to just reflect on the things they've been told - and the things they would have to do in the future. What is this new time they live in, how did his family fare in all this, how will the other dragon groups react to them, what will they be asked to do in the future? His thoughts race on.

Jus
Tuesday December 11th, 2001 1:56:03 PM

Jus reacquaints himself with the house... their house. It's strange how any house doesn't really feel like home anymore. "Seems our vacation has finally arrived. With the latest stress, I'd say it came just at the right time."

Wandering through the kitchen, Jus has to add to Mitchum's description, "This is also Gareth's favorite room -- this or the pantry. Be careful if you see him here at night; he'll likely tear your head off if he thinks you'll take his food."

Turning the conversation back to the current situation, Jus asks, "What do you think the other gods are doing? I haven't heard anything since Domi died [rest his soul in peace]."

Cantos
Tuesday December 11th, 2001 6:37:49 PM

Cantos enjoys the tour as any polite guest wwould then asks quietly to Mitchum," Excuse me but which room is available?" After he is shown he will bathe and change into his better clothes. Then find the others.

Qualde
Wednesday December 12th, 2001 8:17:00 AM

"A suitable dwelling," Qualde husks, as if there had been some doubt. The priestess chooses a room without fuss, and changes into her ritual gear: a few scraps of snowy silk and silver jewelry. She pads through the halls to the ballroom for some quality prayer time, worhipping her goddess through dance.

Later, she catches Gareth alone. "Gareth, a word. Have worked together many weeks. I see your kindness, bravery, and honesty. See your skill. You have my trust, and my respect. If you have question, only ask."

Nonam
Wednesday December 12th, 2001 8:32:56 AM

"I'll take the room closest to the library. I'll see all of you in the morning."

DM JK
Wednesday December 12th, 2001 8:38:53 AM

All of the bedrooms are available as Mitchum stays in the servant's wing (which he didn't show you). Everyone gets a good night's sleep.

The next day finds you at breakfast with time for a little more conversation.

Finally a messenger arrives. He bears a message:
"The Three, I hope that this message is to welcome you home, though I fear that you have selected Plateau City. Please come to the Palace of the Overlord at your convenience. I have several things that I would like to discuss. Primarily, I want to verify these rumors about the rise of cult god worship in Plateau City. I didn't think Sturtevent would permit such a thing. -The Overlord of Floating City"

Tericus
Wednesday December 12th, 2001 8:47:40 AM

"I guess our vacation didn't last long." Tericus says. "Oh well, since we are the only dragon group active right now, I guess that's to be expected."

Gareth
Wednesday December 12th, 2001 12:02:53 PM

The warrior smiles at Qualde's words. "I thank you for your support. You have been an invaluable ally since you joined us. I do indeed have a question for you." He pauses a moment, still troubled greatly. "I wish to ask you how your sister is doing - at least I think she's your sister? The one I killed thinking she was an enemy?". He fumbles on a bit. "I hesitate because I didn't want to ask straight away, and I did not want to offend you by naming her your sibling instead of your aunt, cousin, or niece - or daughter. I just didn't know how to ask... I also wondered if you had any news from you family after all this tragedy with Domi. I also wonder if the council will change their treatment of them now that Sturtavent is not currently in charge."

Gareth sleeps well that night and as usual eats breakfast with gusto. "Sounds like he doesn't know of our promotion to Dragon Level yet. I find that interesting. I wonder how he'll react to the news? Perhaps we should refrain from mentioning our stint with Ciaran in Myth Drannor - seeing these guys rejection of the cult gods?"

Cantos
Wednesday December 12th, 2001 11:11:17 PM

Cantos looks around at everyone, "Well at least we got a good night's sleep."

Jus
Thursday December 13th, 2001 4:54:10 AM

Jus comes down to breakfast in the old shorts and overshirt he used to wear before he became a somebody. They fit pretty good -- although his extra few pounds are showing in a few places.

Jus listens to Gareth's words, impressed out how far this Gareth is from the one he met years ago. "I've been wondering about Ciaran, too. Who he was and how he fits in all this."

With resignation, he realizes he'll have to dress a bit more 'proper' before they leave.

Nonam
Thursday December 13th, 2001 7:54:42 AM

"I did some checking on Ciaran, it seems his power is confined to Myth Drannor. There are a few old books about that city that touch on him. From what I've read, I believe he is captured in the mythal... or perhaps he's actually a part of it now. Things become rather confused on that point, and it seems that I know more about the Mythal than most who have visited that magic place."

Qualde
Thursday December 13th, 2001 8:19:05 AM

"My mother, granddaughter of Matron." The drow's features remain expressionless, but her green eyes soften. "In truth, Gareth, have same questions as you, and some concern: Breyt'tar had close ties to Domi. Had hoped to visit soon, to check on them, to see my son. Perhaps after this mission."

After breakfast, Qualde changes into a gauzy, copper-green gown for their appearance before the Overlord.

DM JK
Thursday December 13th, 2001 8:22:02 AM

At your leisure the group finally makes it to see the Overlord. He casually asks what you've been up to, and simple reports are given. However, his intelligence seems very good and not mere rumors as his message indicated.

Eventually he comes around to the point, "During this time of crisis, Floating City has received no aide from Plateau City. I realize that the situation has been troublesome, and I don't blame the good people of Plateau City. However, they expect us to pay taxes to the kingdom and to acknowledge the authority of Plateau City. I don't even know what kingdom they're talking about. The king is dead and a High Lord Mayor rules... or at least he did. Now there seems to be a council controlled by worshippers of cult gods.

"If we receive no defense in times of trouble like this one, then I and the Underlord see no reason to recognize the authority of Plateau City any longer. Indeed, we no longer recognize their authority and have taken control of our own government. We've redirected our tax funds to paying for an expanded town guard, and we'll keep the peace. I'm allowing cult members into the city though I find it distasteful, but we still make them register.

"These things have been done, and they will remain that way. I merely tell you in case you haven't learned the scope of the situation already. So where do you brave heroes fit into all of this? You will certainly always be welcome in the Big Float no matter the situation between us and Plateau. You are our favorite sons, so to speak. It warms our hearts everytime you return. I am simply glad that you have come home, and I hope that you plan to stay. The Floating City could use some heroes like the Storm Dragons."

Cantos
Thursday December 13th, 2001 12:56:56 PM

Cantos looks at the overlord in amazement and then regains composure. "Have you spoken with the council of Plateau City?"

Gareth
Thursday December 13th, 2001 3:09:29 PM

The warrior nods to Qualde and raises and eyebrow at her words on her son. "I wonder how your family's treatment of males has changed from the time you were in Menzo? I read many intelligence reports before we went to Menzo the first time about how males are treated. I've also witnessed with my own eyes your family's treatment of males to be much more lenient. They seem to have more respect than mere battle fodder in your house. I would like to know more of your family when we have time - and if you are willing..." The warrior clearly tries to be careful not to anger the drow, and seems more curious than anything.

The warrior looks grim as the situation is told by the overlord and nods in appreciation of his compliment to their new status. "Was it not the new leader of the Cult Gods who killed Domi? Or are there some cult gods who do not align themselves with The Dark Lord? It bothers me greatly that some of the council members follow them. What information do you have on the council themselves? It might help us know exactly what we've gotten ourselves into."

Tericus
Friday December 14th, 2001 6:58:15 AM

After listening to what the Overlord says, Tericus says, "We're put in a pretty tight situation. This is our home, but we answer to the Council. I'm not sure where we all stand."

Qualde
Friday December 14th, 2001 8:33:25 AM

Qualde addresses the Overlord. "My lord, we stay for brief, but must return soon to Plateau. Were slower to make order there, and now in greater need of help. Can carry any message for you to Council?"

Nonam
Friday December 14th, 2001 8:42:07 AM

Nonam thinks for a moment and frowns, "They aren't going to take the loss of tax revenue very well. I'm afraid this could turn into a small war, and it would be one that I wouldn't fight in."

have no fear - DMJK
Friday December 14th, 2001 9:25:10 AM

The Overlord answers Cantos first, "That first night, I sent a request for aid to Sturtevent, but he claimed he was powerless to help. My... emissaries informed me of the rise of the council, so I directed new letters to them. I sent three. Each came back with some paltry excuse why they couldn't help yet. The people in and around my City needed aid, so we stepped in to provide it. The tales of the lawlessness outside Plateau City are horrible."

Then he turns to Gareth, "YES. This god they call the Dark Lord is the one that slew Domi. I'm sure that rates him as powerful, but in my mind it makes him and all his followers evil. Murder is an act of evil whether done by men or gods. Of the councilmen, I probably know little more than you. I have met them before since they've all been part of Sturtevent's advisory council for some time. Valiano is vain and pompous, but he's basically a good man. He's long held a grudge against Sturtavent. Indeed, he would have become the High Lord Mayor if the Gold Dragons hadn't stepped in and meddled in the affairs of government. His chief rival has always been Grendalf. That one has always been a manipulator. Mark my words, the council doesn't do anything that Grendalf doesn't want it to do. Valiano is a figurehead, but Grendalf runs the show. Surely you've noticed this yourselves, and I'm sure that you know that Grendalf is a servant of this Dark Lord. That makes him a murderer in league with murderers in my book, (at this point he turns to face Tericus) and I must admit I question your judgement in working so closely with such a group. I will assume for now that you have some reason beyond loyalty to a group of lords that announced you were part of the dragon consortium. The Green Dragons are the eldest dragon group, and they still run the consortium no matter what these councilmen have told you. I hope that you don't truly believe that these other heroes have simply ceased to be because of the words of some politicians. The rest of the Consortium has continued to be active. I assume that they accept you for some reason, or a challenge would have been issued by now. There are some subtle maneuverings that I don't see... yet."
"As for messages to the Council, feel free to report exactly what I've told you. But young wizard, keep thoughts of war to yourself. It may well come to that, but it's a war that I would not choose to fight either. There are plans to take care of that. Should you finally return home before things become that bad, I will share these plans with you."

The Overlord rises, "Well, I think I've made my position on things pretty clear. Allow me to make one final entreaty, I hope you decide to return here and stay. If you feel you have duties first, then take care of them. Our gates will stay open to you. Should you come, I will keep you informed of events as I hear them and will occasionally ask your advice. I and the Underlord run the show in the Big Float, and you won't become embroiled in politics here. You will also find leaders that abhor these cultists and their so called gods. So, go in peace and enjoy your parade."

The last words take on a sharper meaning as you exit the Overlord's palace. As soon as the group exits the door, music begins to play, balloons are let loose, and crowds of children laugh in delight. Apparently everything was set up while you were visiting with the Overlord. A banner says "Welcome Home! Storm Dragons!" It seems the whole Open Air level turned into one big party honoring the group while you were inside. Everyone seems happy, but from the steps of the Overlord's Palace, you can see the remnants of Domi's Temple in the distance.

Now is time for a little celebration, but the hard desicions are coming.

[Now we start the 3 week holiday slowdown. I'll still post most everyday, and we'll get some good stuff in. But, it won't have anything to do with YOA or politics]

Gareth
Friday December 14th, 2001 10:35:09 AM

Before the Overlord leaves he whispers in his ear to avoid any eavesdroppers. "Overlord, there is a reason the other groups have accepted us - and a reason we stay in Plateau City and report to those who appear to be evil. Your display of trust is most appreciated - and well placed.".

Friday December 14th, 2001 7:03:06 PM

Jus follows the others out of the Overlord's palace. The balloons, cheering, and other festivities easily distract him from heavier cares. Jus takes special effort to wave to each of the children he sees, shaking hands with whomever offers.

As he progresses, he keeps one eye out for the little girl that he gave his ladybug pin -- hoping to see her alive and well someday.

Saturday December 15th, 2001 11:21:25 AM

Nonam files away the Overlord's words and wishes that he could move back to Floating City now. However, other duties call.

On seeing the party, Nonam follows Jus' lead and tries to amuse the children with flashy spells and coppers for candy.

Cantos says nothing else, following his friends away from the Overlord's palace.

Qualde
Sunday December 16th, 2001 7:49:42 PM

Qualde feels a sharp pang at the sight of the ruined temple, knowing what it must surely be. She musters polite court smiles for the parade, and enjoys Jus and Nonam play to the crowd.

"You are loved by your home city. Is good," she tells them later. "This Overlord is clever, city is -- healthy. I think Plateau can't recover as well, with current council."

The priestess stops by Caeroldra's temple to join a service and guage the state of the church. She tries to find out what has become of Domi's priesthood in Floating City.
