When it rains... DM DEH Monday January 7th, 2002 12:24:21 PM
Six months have passed since the parade. The popularity of the Storm Dragons has grown considerably as they continue to help the people of New Elenna and The Floating City without prejucide.
A Town Crier comes around the Storm Dragon's manor in the Floating City announcing that the Temples of Alemi, Pantheon and the One (amongst others) are offering to accept clerics of the ex-God of War and Courage. Any such clerics are to go to the temples of the god they wish to inquire after and discuss it with the clerics there. They will be welcomed and urged to give their allegiance to a new god in return for being allowed to worship that God in Domi fashion in his memory.
Talk of the gods centers around the continued instability of the two factions of Caeroldra. The Hands of Love appear to be approaching their form of worship in a rather brutal manner. The Servants of Passion are holding nightly orgies enraging the populace while enticing individuals one by one.
There is layer upon layer of gossip. Most of it is just talk, but it shows the worry of the populace and the breaking down of their trust in those who protect them - one reason the popularity of the Storm Dragons grows.
One morning you receive a summons from the Overlord - which you quickly answer. You find him in one of his council rooms with a look of grave concern. Brushing by all pretense, pomp and circumstance, he gets right to the point. "News comes of a man currently in Plateau City - an important man so they say - who is denouncing all the city rulers as dragons in disguise, out to enslave everyone. The man's name is A'tath, and he is due to visit the Floating City in the next day or so and make similar claims. The word is that 'everyone' in Plateau City is going crazy, and that people are starting to panic. Anyone with any remote dragon connection whatsoever is being victimized. It was also announced today and confirmed that the Gold Dragons - according to the Plateau City Council - have turned evil, attacking the Ambassador from Aisildur in his Consulate. The Council has overruled Sturtavent's hesitation and had branded them outlaws. There is a 10,000gp reward for information that leads to the location and arrest of The Gold Dragons. Also, the Red Dragons have responded with a cross-accusation of The High Council and have stated their unerring support of Sturtavent. And the Green Dragons have not been located for a comment." With a sigh he sits down in one of the many beautifully adorned chairs in the chamber and continues.
"The truth of all these rumours is debatable, but one of our reliable sources from one of the underground thieves guilds says that A'tath is real enough, and has accused Ackard the thieves Guildmaster in Plateau City of being a dragon, along with a lot more 'higher-ups'. Apparently this A'tath man had some kind of device, which could point out anyone with dragon ancestry within 100 paces and 'smite them down'. He didn't know about people going crazy over there though, but he reckoned that dragon people ought to watch out all the same." The news appears to drape quite heavily over the Overlord's shoulders. "The strain of governing since the demise of Domi has been great. And now for our efforts, we are to be attacked and thrown down. I hold no strong feelings for those in Plateau City, but surely they desrve better than this...." Looking up at the Storm Dragons he voices his concerns. "I fear for Sturtavent - and others. Apparently the Council there is listening to this - A'tath, whoever he is - and they are going on a dragon hunt! Then this guy is supposed to come here. I would suggest you make your way to Plateau City immediately and look in on Sturtavent. And find out who this person is who the Council has put their faith. What are his motives, why is he there, where did he come from, but most importantly, what are his plans for Floating City? This is all I know, I would appreciate hearing from you as soon as possible."
As you leave the Overlord's office, and make your way back to your mansion to prepare, it happens. The call comes through the Realm Rings from Valdor. "We're getting out of town. The populace has turned against us. Remain "friends" with the council as long as you can without... becoming that which you fight against."
As you look at each other with surprise - since you were told that the other groups couldn't communicate on these rings - another communication follows from an unknown female voice. "Ohh Holy Alemi! They have Sturtavent and are taking him to A'tath to reveal that he's a dragon! Oh, they come for me! Save us!". And then there's nothing...
DM DEH Monday January 7th, 2002 12:35:42 PM
All right guys, I need character sheets updated with XPs and sent to me ASAP. There will be combat and we won't start it until I get them all (unless there is a holdout or 2 and then I'll simply ignore their posts until I recieve the character sheet... :) Good day!). Email is dhott@nortelnetworks.com and gareth-3@juno.com. Send it to both.
Gareth Monday January 7th, 2002 4:50:34 PM
The warrior attempts to respond to Valdor, and then to the female voice. Once that fails he looks to the others. "Let's get going guys. Sounds like we have no time. Nonam, can you get us to Plateau City now?"
OOC: All, for sake of time, let's assume everyone went prepared to travel when we went to the Overlord.
Jus Tuesday January 8th, 2002 2:39:04 AM
During the break, Jus approaches Gareth and Nonam while they are together. "Hey guys, I've been visiting the Catacombs and the Black Genie on and off lately. I'd like to do a lot of things, but honestly," Jus shrugs, "my deep pockets aren't deep enough for what I want."
"Here's my proposition," Jus continues. "We've been collecting a lot of odds and ends -- things left over from party bounty, and things given to the party. Since we haven't used any of it in a long time, I'd like us to cash it in and split the cash."
Backing off a step, Jus says, "Now before you look to me for a comprehensive list, I let you know that I don't have it. I know we got a Horn of Blasting once. I think I recall some minor magic weapons that no one claimed." Looking to Gareth, Jus continues, "I'm hoping Gareth kept a list, since he and his Bag of Holding has been our pack mule. Otherwise, I think we'd better go through any notes we've kept."
OOC: I'll try to get the character sheet update soon. Can't guarantee it by tomorrow, though.
Addinein Tuesday January 8th, 2002 10:17:47 AM
During the six months of downtime, Addinein familiarizes himself with his new surroundings. Still hesitant about how his people interact around the town, Addinein doesn't spend much time outside of their abode. But everytime he gets a chance, he tries to participate in the discussions, and the goings on around his new home.
Nonam Tuesday January 8th, 2002 11:03:21 AM
"I'm betting we'd better hurry or they'll finish off Sturtavent. Some of the Council would be more than happy to get rid of him. Of course, if they have him, then we're dealing with a someone or someones powerful enough to capture a dragon or perhaps two (if that woman we heard was a dragon). That's a problem. If everyone is ready, let's go!". The mage pulls out his rod and quickly begins the wind walk.
I do this because I love you! DM DEH Tuesday January 8th, 2002 11:50:14 AM
Our group of hardy adventurers appear near the High Lord Mayor's mansion and offices. The area is in a frenzy and it looks like everyone is headed for Dragon Square. You catch snippets of conversation such as: "They have him in chains!" "Looks like they're really going to do it!" "By the gods! He's really a dragon!"
As you approach the square you see there are probably thousands of people there, and they don't look too much more civil than when you saw the mob attacking the very seat of government. They are all looking accusingly at each other, wondering if any who stand among them are dragons. Up on a constructed dais you see the entire council, many other city leaders and officials, and most troubling you see Sturtavent and Oratai - the high priestess of Alemi in chains! Next to them are standing 2 high priests of Caeroldra, in the order of The Hands of Love each holding a noose around the prisoners like a leash. It's one of the most troubling and demeaning things you've ever seen to witness these priests leering at the two figures with a crazed look in their eyes while they try to look lovingly toward the crowd.
As you make your way closer to the dais Grendalf, prominent member of the high council, stands, silences the crowd, and begins to speak with the help of a giant magic mouth for volume. "Citizens of New Elenna! These are indeed troubled times we live in! Even as we struggle to recover from the death of the beloved god Domi, we find ourselves deserted by our most respected Knights of the Realm! The following proclamations have been made by the Council and are effective immediately. As a result of their actions, the Gold Dragons are hereby declared as outlaws for grievous crimes against the ambassadors from Ailsidur. They are being hunted down and any information provided to us that leads to their capture will be rewarded with 10,000 GPs!" The crowd gasps at the news, for what was rumor has now been made official. "Secondly, the Red Dragons and the Green Dragons - although their Consortium was disbanded - were still both considered allies of the state. However, both groups have officially denounced the council and have broken all ties with the government here. Consequently, it is my duty to announce that these groups are no longer in good standing with the government of New Elenna and are no longer authorized to act on its behalf in any fashion. Any such actions from them will be considered High Treason and they will be punished accordingly!" The crowd at this point begins again to become unruly. The guards have to get involved to restore order. Everyone is looking around trying to figure out what to do. During this time Grendalf notices you nearing the dais. He nods as if in relief to see you here. "Fortunately, we have one good piece of news. The Storm Dragons join us today!" (Crowd cheers loudly), "Since their appointment they have performed their duties admirably and have signifcantly improved relations with the Floating City and have restored order in the countryside!" (More cheering). "This bodes well for our future." The councilman smiles your way a long while.
This is going to hurt me more than it does you... (DM DEH) Tuesday January 8th, 2002 12:16:06 PM
With a grim and sad look, the concilmember continues his speech. "And finally, the most grievous news of all." He looks back at Sturtavent and Oratai. His face turns red in rage and he has to take a moment to regain his composure before continuing. "It has come to our attention that there is a conspiracy against all the people of New Elenna. A number of dragons - real dragons - have conspired together to take control of our country and enslave the entire populace!" If you thought the gasps at the first announcements were large, they are nothing compared to what is taking place now. The crowd now murmurs in fear as well as outrage at the pronouncement. Even though most had already heard about the taking of the former High Lord Mayor into custody, and even some had heard that he might be a dragon, nobody knew why this was happening. "Two of your most prominent leaders have been at the center of this debacle, and have been - as you can see - taken into custody. With the help of a great ally, we have discovered this plot and have quashed it soundly. There are others among us who are of dragonkind - and I can assure they will be found - but we will begin the cleansing by exposing these two for what they are!"
A huge man makes his way to the dais. You didn't notice him before because he was behind and off to the side. The crowd quickly gets out of this fearsome man's way. He stands easily 8' tall - perhaps taller. He bulges at every possible location with muscles, all of which twitch and move impressively as he strides. You've never seen any fighter this powerful. Not Valdor, not Gareth, probably not both put together. He wears some sort of red metal armor that molds itself perfectly to his form - as if it is a second layer of skin. It appears like scale armor to be specific. But it somehow looks like it would be extremely hard to penetrate. The man carries a two-handed sword but clearly wields it one-handed like an average man would a bastard sword. This must be A'Tath. He approaches Sturtavent, smiles smugly, and holds his huge weapon in front of him. As he does a mist appears above and behind the deposed High Lord Mayor and an image of a huge ancient gold dragon appears behind him. The crowd collectively gasps at the sight. Walking over to Oratai, he performs the same ritual, but this time a huge silver dragon form appears behind her.
So its true! They are both dragons of the most powerful kind!
Grendalf of the High Council comes forward with a branding iron and marks them both with a brand that says 'Dragon' on their foreheads. Neither cries out in pain, only look somber at the fate they are clearly about to suffer. Grendalf slaps Sturtavent and reads a proclamation loudly:
"Whereas as Sturtavent has conspired to hide his nefarious identity from the people he was charged to protect...
"And whereas Sturtavent has conspired to enslave the populace of New Elenna..."
"Be it confirmed and announced that he is found guilty of treason and sentenced to die this day."
He turns to Oratai. "We'll let you watch him die and then it will be your turn! Maybe others of your kind will see this and know they cannot bully us or have their way with us!"
The crowd goes into a frenzy now. Many are clearly opposed to this action, most are confused, many are looking on in approval. There appear to be several in the crowd that look about to attack.
The huge warrior strides forward and bellows so that all can hear. "By the proclamation of the the High Council, I execute you!"
With horror on their faces the crowd goes wild. The warrior prepares to raise his sword and strike Sturtavent. It is clear that his sword is specially made to slaying dragons and that Sturtavent - unable to defend himself for some reason - will likely not survive one attack, perhaps two at most if he's really an ancient dragon. Many of the crowd rush the stage, only to be held back by the guards, several spells begin to go off, fights break out with screams of "No!", but nobody has made the stage. The high priests of Caeroldra begin to chant, several mages step up and begin to cast to counteract the crowd. More priests from the order of the Hands of Love appear above the dais area, flying and prepared to cast. All semblance of order is now lost. It's about to get REALLY ugly.
(OK, melee begins only after I get the character sheets. Don't post attacks unless you've sent it. Other actions are OK.)
Gareth d20+3=18 d20+27=37 Tuesday January 8th, 2002 1:27:14 PM
Horrified at what is about to take place the warrior leaps onto the stage (Dex 18). He bellows at the huge man and draws his bastard sword. "Hold or I will stop you! He's a dragon but he's a good dragon. What is his crime other than not revealing this fact?". If the man doesn't stop he uses his attack to parry the blow to Sturtavent with both hands (Hit AC 37).
Addinein Wednesday January 9th, 2002 12:11:52 AM
Watching what is going on, Addinein is not sure what to make about what is going on. When the first sign of trouble comes, Addinein is not ready. Addinein looks to the others, to see what their reactions are to this apparent scene.
Cantos Wednesday January 9th, 2002 12:25:13 AM
Cantos looks around with alarm then follows Gareth on the dias. "What in the name of all that is holy do you think you are doing?" the bard shouts. "You will not strike down a man without a trial... it will not happen today nor any other. You will stop now or be stopped." Cantos then turns and looks at the council. "Gentlemen this will stop, or you are no better than those you accuse of trying to destroy this city and all it stands for. If he is a dragonkin - and I say 'if' because I know not what this man who says he is can do or say - he has still served new Elenna and you... What would you have done - civil war or a restoration of law and order - choose quickly or it will be chosen for you."
OOC: Cantos' character sheet is forthcoming and Addienin your min/max is done and Jerry will have it to you by Sun I hope. My son is in the hospital so it will be then at the earliest.
Jus Wednesday January 9th, 2002 1:46:27 AM
Jus has no idea how the next few minutes will turn out. He makes certain to keep his hands away from his weapons, knowing he can use Quick Draw to get what is needed, if it comes to melee.
"Careful, Gareth," Jus calls. "Although his actions are always foremost, Gareth makes a point." Jus swings his arm wide, encompassing the crowd around them. "We've all been taught since childhood that there are good dragons and there are bad dragons." Jus raises his voice and asks the crowds, "Are not Golds and Silvers protectors of all that is good?" Turning back to the Council, Jus asks, "Why kill good dragons? Should we not find out why they masquerade among us?" Jus flicks his hand towards the two prisoners in dismissal, "If they do not serve our good, then perhaps we would benefit from their death. But let us," again Jus indicates the crowds, "know their misdeeds!"
Jus stops, looks puzzled, and turns back to examine Sturtavent and Oratai. "And how do two mighty dragons allow themselves to be humbled like this? Perhaps the dragons have fled and left bewitched two innocent bystanders to take their place? Are they already dead? Something about this is not right."
Finally, Jus looks at A'Tath, "And this... man who comes claiming they are dragons, has he been tested himself? His red armor and daunting size," Jus gives A'Tath a nod, complimenting him even though he is suspicious of this man, "seems to fit him too well. We know where the council comes from, but do we know from where A'Tath hies?"
Nonam Wednesday January 9th, 2002 2:39:35 AM
"Just like Gareth to use his brawn and Jus to use his mouth," Nonam thinks to himself. Nonam calmly pulls out his Scroll of Rary's Telepathic Bond and uses it to create a bond between Nonam, Qualde, and the two claimed to be Oratai and Sturtavent. Once established, he tries to determine if both are dragons [for pretense, at least] and why the two cannot fight.
"Qualde, you with me?" Nonam thinks to the Drow.
Nonam readies his Ring of Mass Teleportation to transport the party and Oratai and Sturtavent out of here, in case it is necessary.
Tericus Wednesday January 9th, 2002 5:38:42 AM
Confused and horrified at what is happening, Tericus jumps up on the platform next to Gareth. "You all must stop this!!" Tericus cries to the council "This is not the right way!!"
You thought THAT hurt!?! (DM DEH) d20+40=58 d20+30=41 d20+20=26 Wednesday January 9th, 2002 11:00:43 AM
Results: The comments of Jus, Tericus, and Cantos are mostly drowned out by the crowd and commotion (thousands of voices). The only ones who seem to really hear anything are the 3 Council members that you had deemed of good heart - Valiano, Leunenon, and Shanleigh. They seem defeated and ignored, as if they are nothing more than decoration for the sake of appearances and are looking on helplessly. The other Council members - the cult god worshipers - are glaring at Gareth and the others for their outburst. Grendalf especially seems outraged that an interruption has been attempted.
None of this matters, though, because A'Tath pays no heed to Gareth. He strikes at Sturtavent what would have otherwise been a death blow (Hit AC 58) - except that Gareth partially parries it. The sheer strength of this one is simply too much for Gareth to overcome - even using both hands! His huge sword still hits Sturtavent but it does not do much damage. Although from your best guess it should have.
In a rage he turns to face the hero, who looks pretty small in front of the huge man. From somewhere near him you hear a wailing "No! Pay the gnats no heed! Strike the dragons! KILL! KILL! KILL!" You can guess the voice is coming from his sword.
Glaring at the group and clearly having trouble with his battle of wills with the weapon, he states flatly. "ALL dragons are a scourge to the Wold! I consider myself fortunate to be able to help eradicate the vermin! You yourself were my ally in this by killing the red dragon in Cinnamon Valley - but no more!" Because of the lay of the dais he cannot turn his sword on Gareth and maintain his position in front of Sturtavent. So instead he plants a backhand fist in his face (26 DMG), sending him flying into the crowd (Gareth make Fort check DC 20 to remain concious). He ignores Tericus and Cantos, turns back to the gold dragon and attempts to strike again.
Nonam quickly gains contact with the dragons. Sturtavent urgently exclaims, "Nonam, the nooses are keeping us from doing anything. We can do nothing unless they are removed. If you fight A'Tath, you will all die quickly. He is beyond you. Get the nooses off and then I can act!" The effort for Sturtavent to send that message was clearly taxing. The magic of the nooses must be strong indeed! ...
Cantos d20+17=37 d20+12=22 d6+2=7 d6+2=3 Wednesday January 9th, 2002 12:43:25 PM
Cantos realizing that even though he does not have the needed power to stop A'Tath strikes the huge man twice hitting AC 37 and 22 for 7 and 3 points of damage." You will harm no man without a trial before my life and blade are laid low." Cantos bellows. "And you claim to be men of freedom and ideas you cowards of the Council... you scourge I will die before I allow a man to be laid low for no cause." Cantos then steps in front of the two chained and assumes a defensive posture. "If this be my last song then let it be one of good over evil, justice over injustice, and of mercy over vengeance. Let this be the song of Cantos the Bard heard eternally!!"
Whom Shall You Serve? d20+40=43 Wednesday January 9th, 2002 12:56:22 PM
With the striking of Gareth, all chaos breaks out. Many run in fear of one who could do that to a warrior of his caliber. Others turn grimly and decide to fight. Among the number are many priests of Alemi, who take aim at the high priest of Caeroldra holding Oratai and the HoL priests flying over the dais. Mages from the guild - some on the stage, others in the crowd - begin throwing spells. A'Tath is hit with a cone of cold, lightning bolt, dozens of magic missiles, and a couple of flamestrikes. Even through all of this he delivers a blow to the ensnared dragon but it distracts him enough that his strike on Sturtavent simply bounces off. The huge warrior still stands as he sets to strike again - all but ignoring the melee and damage. Those holding the dragon take damage and deal some out, but they are still standing. Several priests fall from the sky but many more are still up. Most of the mages on the stage are still casting. One of them gets up a wall of force splitting the crowd and shielding the dais from the rain of arrows and spells of the mages in the crowd. The city guard, still apparently loyal to the council, regroups and blocks the stage, cutting down anyone who comes near. The Storm Dragons are between the guards and the stage.
Details: Enemies - There are 7 HoL priests still flying (Love really IS in the air...), 5 mages on the dais, 50 guards (35 behind you, 15 scattered around the dais), one high priest with each dragon, A'Tath is in front of Sturtavent, 7 councilmembers to his left (4 of whom are clearly evil, 3 who are not). Allies - 3 mages are in front of the wall of force behind the swordsman (listed below), 3 priests of Alemi, 1 archer, 15 swordsmen, 2 dragons, and you. Those allies behind the wall of force are effectively out of the fight. Good luck...
The 7 HoL priests in the air focus on the priests of Alemi yelling things like "Treason! Sacrelidge to your own god! etc". The mages cast at the archer and the 3 mages, the 35 guards attack the 15 swordsmen, the other 15 guards close ranks around the councilmembers and the high priests. 2 guards are near Cantos and Tericus but hold attacks because the two are not holding their weapons. 2 guards are near Jus but hold for the same reason. Grendalf is screaming something but it is lost in the noise and no guards focus on the Storm Dragons (they are allies are they not?).
It's your turn...
DM DEH Wednesday January 9th, 2002 1:01:46 PM
I'll be sending a picture later...
Jus d20+18=38 Wednesday January 9th, 2002 6:46:12 PM
Obviously the Storm Dragons will no longer be in favor of the Council, so Jus tries to use things to the party's advantage. While pulling out components for a spell, Jus yells to Grendalf [hoping A'tath will hear], "What's going on, Grendalf? The last time we met, you revealed your hopes to bring dragons back to the Wold! Did the council overrule you? Or do you hope this will enrage the dragons and force them back!"
Jus casts defensively [concentration check = 38], coating A'tath's sword with a thick layer of Grease [A'tath must make a Reflex save every round for 8 rounds or he drops the sword. A Reflex save is then required to pick it back up. No Spell Resistance allowed].
Nonam Wednesday January 9th, 2002 7:04:43 PM
Since Qualde is not here, Nonam includes Cantos in the Rary's Telepathic Bond instead.
"Qualde, Addinein!" Nonam calls to those standing near him. "Release their ropes and they will be freed!"
Nonam doesn't use his Ring of Mass Teleportation yet, waiting for someone to remove the ropes from the dragons. Instead, he casts Wall of Force, creating a barrier between A'Taht and the dragons, running diagonal across the platform. [See emailed drawing].
Addinein d20=1 d20=15 d20=9 d20=4 d20=9 Thursday January 10th, 2002 1:14:54 AM
Glad that someone has asked something that he does, Addinein moves with all haste to help Sturtavent. (60' with boots, and with feat (name escapes me, not at home)).
E-mail not rcd as of midnight EST
Addinein tries his best to move and remove the nooses around the 2 dragons' necks. IF he can use his rapier to come up and under from inside the loop of the noose, in order to throw the rope off, he will do so. If he has to grab the noose and throw it over the head of the noose wearer, then he will do so.
I roll 5 20's just to give you numbers to work with. For whatever rolls I might need.
(sigh) None of them anything spectacular, and probably not helpful. :) :(
Tericus Thursday January 10th, 2002 5:36:13 AM
Surrounded by guards, Tericus quickly casts a spell and yells out "FREEZE!!" (cast greater command, lasts for 11 rds and affects guards 6-15, save vs tn 19 or be frozen in place) Once his spell goes off Tericus begins to move towards the council, drawing his mace as he moves forward.
Cantos Thursday January 10th, 2002 11:31:48 AM
Cantos reaches out with his off hand and removes the noose around the High Lord Mayor's neck and faces A'Tath again making sure that he is fighting defensively. Cantos uses the bond to Nonam. "Sorry I guess I can't just seem to wait and let people die, I hope we get out of this."

The warrior clings to conciousness as he's blasted from the stage (DC 20). He shakes off the attack, leaps back onto the stage (DC 22), and attacks the red clad giant striking him soundly (Hit AC 45,[42] for 19_22=41 DMG).

Swordsmen 1-15 attack the elite guard. They all fight very well and are clearly heros in the own right. 13 of the elite guard fall in the first flurry of attacks, and 4 more fall as the swordsmen cleave into their foes (Cleave Feat). The archer puts 3 arrows into one of the flying HoL Priests, two which explode on impact. And he falls from the sky. Mage #1 lets fly a volley of 10 unusually large magic missiles (one from each digit) directly at the Caeroldra high priest holding Oratai. He grins ear to ear as they explode right into him. Mage #2 sends a similar spell at the Caeroldra high priest holding Sturtavent, but curses as they explode harmlessly off Nonam's wall of force. Mage #3 blasts 3 of the flying HoL priests (4,5,6) with a "fire oval" - apparetly a modified fireball. These guys are good! Cleric #1 casts Etherialness and simply disappears at his position. At the end of the round he reappears directly in front of guild mages #1 and #2 and right behind the Caeroldra high priest holding Oratai. Priest #2 Summons a huge celestail Dire bear that appears right next to High Priest #2 holding Sturtavent - which promply whack him across the head. Priest #3 casts and a giant eagle appears right next to flying priest #2 which begins to rake and claw him.

As bedlam and chaos thunder across the square, the council decides it would be better to be somewhere else as does the crowd. Apparently preparing for this contingency (noting the controversial nature of the decision), a shimmering gate appears next to them and all 7 of them go through. It promptly closes. Guild Mage #5 did the honors for that one. A'tath bellows as his next blow bounces off Nonam's wall of force. The grease spell misses the sword handle as the huge warrior deftly avoids it (description says succesful REF save defeats spell on a wielded item. Got DC 37). He also takes damage from Cantos first attack, but not the second. He takes more note of Gareth's attack, but still does not turn to face them directly! With his next attack the wiley man strikes the wall of force once more with his sword, and this time it shudders and collapses into nothing (disintigrate ablility on the sword). A'tath shifts himself so that the is virtually no space between him and his quarry. Guild Mage #4 forks a lightning bolt beginning right in front of the city guard and blasts swordsmen 14&15, Mage #3 and the archer. The city guard 19-48 attack the swordsmen at the behest of their 3 captains (16-18) - who also close and engage seeing the ability of their opponents. Guards 6,7 & 9 freeze in place at Tericus' command, Guards 8,11,12,&13 make their save and resist the command. Guards 10,14,&15 do not hear the command and so are not affected (1000's of people running and screaming, 100's near the stage.). Guild Mage #3 casts a fireball - that hits the wall of force and explodes right next to him. It catches him, Sturtavent, high priest #2, the dire bear, and high priest #1. Mages#1 and #2 cast heightened and improved magic missile at Alemi priest #1. Seeing priest #1 appear, guards 1&2 close and attack him. He's looking pretty bad. Guards 4&5 close on Gareth and attack for 21 DMG. Guards 11,10,&13 close with Tericus and attack. He takes 3 hits for 29 DMG. Guards 8,15,&12 close and attack Jus. He's hit 4 times for 54 DMG. Both High Priests of Caeroldra cast a blade barrier (20d6), surrounding themselves and their individual prisoner. The dire bear is cut to shreds, A'tath get stung but makes his save and misses most of the damage (failed SR). Cantos, roll d6 to determine if your hit by it or not - 65 DMG if you're hit (go ahead and roll save for 1/2 as well). Guard #2 is cut down by the other blade barrier, and Alemi priest #1 gets hit, but somehow manages to survive. There are still 6 flying priests, the eagle is cutting HOL priest #2 to ribbons. Priest #1 blasts Alemi Priests #2 with a flame strike, #4 blasts Alemi #3 with the same. #6 also hits Alemi #3 with flame strike. Priest #4 hits Cantos with a flame strike for 42 DMG. Addinien his struck with flame by Priest #5 for 32 DMG. Guild mages #4 and #5 are up to something. Guild Mage #3 shakes off his charred hair and is still standing. Cantos and Addinein could not get to Sturtavent due to Nonam's wall of Force (and they would have been nailed by A'tath' attack of opportunity...). Qualde just stands there. Cantos (blades & fire) and Addinein (fire) save for 1/2.
I left the dashed line wall of force in the BMP file to show it's location - but it's gone. It's been sent. Let me know if you don't get it.
Your turn. I'll post the good guys Round #2 today too.
The Good Guys Strike Back!, Round #2 18d20(1+19+3+5+3+10+14+20+4+1+3+13+11+8+18+8+12+5)=158 12d8(4+3+3+7+8+4+6+6+1+1+4+4)=51 3d20(11+9+12)=32 3d8(7+7+4)=18 d20=20 d8+10=16 3d20(15+2+9)=26 2d8(5+5)=10 15d6(6+4+4+4+2+3+1+1+3+3+1+3+4+6+6)=51 Thursday January 10th, 2002 11:12:26 PM
The swordsmen launch into the elite guard with significant results. After their combined attacks on the Elite Guard there are only 12 of the 35 left standing. An impressive showing indeed! They re-align their defenses to protect the casters and archer as they continue to press the attack. The archer looses 3 more arrows - 2 hit Priest #6 - and blasts him from the sky.
Mage #1 blasts High Priest #1 with 10 more improved and maximized magic missiles that go through the blade barrier unerringly. It's clear he felt their sting. Mage #2 blasts High Priest #2 with the same. Mage #3 casts a wall of iron - which he places directly in front of Guard #18 and Guild Mages #4&5, obscuring their view of the melee. It immediately crashes through the wooden dais landing with a thud on the paving stones below on the ground. It waivers dangerously in the air, not yet ready to tip one way or another. Priest of Alemi #3 calls fervently to his god and casts a flame strike stright down on HoL Priest #1 for 51 DMG.
The Good Guys Strike Back!, Round #2 Thursday January 10th, 2002 11:32:37 PM
As the crowd gets away from the fight, you are now able to hear a bit better than before. But it's loud - as is all melee.
The embattled and mortally wounded priest of Alemi (#1) cries out to his god "Oh my god Alemi! If it please you I beg give your servant the ablity to free your High Priestess!" He casts an Anti-magic field and falls toward Oratai through the blade barrier.
Priest of Alemi #2 yells at guard #3 before he casts, "Curse all you who would stand against our god Alemi and in league with the legions of darkness!" He casts Greater Planar Ally and about the largest air elemantal ever seen appears before him in the air! (Hey, do you think the order of Alemi would stand by while their highest ranking high priestess was executed by the minions of evil? Riiiight...)
Oratai and Sturtavent do nothing. Nonam hears whispers via his spell - "Hurry. Many will die and they will bring reinforcements..." You see the dragons nearly falter as if the weight of the Wold was on their shoulders.
Those still caught behind the wall of force are organizing. Apparently somebody has showed up that can cast disintegrate - and does...
Good guys are done.
Jus (AC 25; HP 18) d20+18=38 d20+8=18 8d6(6+2+6+6+2+3+4+2)=31 Friday January 11th, 2002 12:39:43 AM
Jus reels from the attacks on him and almost falls. He manages to keep his feet, but he is definitely hurting (18 HP left).
Knowing he can't withstand another attack like that, Jus hopes luck stays with him and he can level the field a little. Casting defensively again (made check with natural 20), Jus casts fireball to catch all the men around him and excluding Tericus and Nonam, hoping his new robe earns its purchase [Can't tell scale from map, so I can't be more specific].
The flames engulf Jus, but, sure enough, they do not damage him as his spell doesn't overcome the Spell Resistance bestowed him by his cloak [Rolled 18 on SR check; whoever else is in the flames gets 31 points of damage; Reflex save for half].
Giving a huge sigh of relief that the flames didn't kill him, Jus prepares to get hit again -- and hopefully stay standing. The only other thing he manages to do is yell a feeble "I could use some help here" to his friends.
Tericus d20+25=38 11d6(5+1+5+6+6+4+5+6+3+5+3)=49 Friday January 11th, 2002 5:13:55 AM
Hearing that Jus is in trouble and seeing the destruction the two guild mages are causing (4 and 5), Tericus concentrates hard on casting his next spell (concentration check of 38 due to being in combat while attemping to cast), focusing on guard #14, Tericus casts blade barrier centered on him, extending the barrier out its full 30ft radius, hoping to catch the two guild mages and any of the other guards he can with it, for a total of 49 pts of damage.
Addinein d20+8=11 Friday January 11th, 2002 8:26:46 AM
Addinein is washed over by the sheet of flame (failed save).
Hmmmm. no map anywhere that I can see.
Addinein continues to make his way towards the accused. If needed, and the situation allows it, Addinein will cast Expeditious retreat, and continue towards the accused.
Qualde (Hasted) d20+17=20 4d8(5+8+2+7)+12=34 Friday January 11th, 2002 10:43:57 AM
Qualde had been temporarily thrown by the sight of so many of Caeroldra's priesthood actually condoning this travesty. A sick feeling of premonition settles in her gut, and she lets anger wash over her to drown it out.
Jus' shout finally spurs her to action. Qualde activates her boots and hurries up onto the platform behind him to defensively (Conc=20, succeeds) cast Cure Critical Wounds, returning 34hp to the embattled elf. (burnt Control Water)
Gareth (50% displaced) d20+27=39 d20+22=36 d20+17=28 d10+16=26 d10+16=25 d10+16=19 Friday January 11th, 2002 11:43:20 AM
Unwilling to let the giant man before him continue trying to take out Sturtavent, the warrior strikes 3 mighty blows on A'tath - the last of which bounces off harmlessly. He also notices when he strikes that many stone flakes seem to chip off him when he hits. (Hit AC 39,36,28 for 26+25+19=70 DMG).
He yells at the 2 guards attacking him "Why are you supporting this travesty. These dragons are GOOD not evil!".
Cantos Friday January 11th, 2002 12:56:30 PM
Cantos look at A'Tath and realizes that if anyone is to free Sturtavent and Orotai that it must be done now. Stepping so that he can look A'Tath in the eye, Cantos levels his rapier at him and shouts, "Cursed dragonkin, defiler of truth, bedmate of evil, or cur of Marteaus whatever you may be -- now is the time you face the truth... cease this battle and pick up my gauge or forever be known as a craven and coward in front of all TRUE men... speak quickly foul beast or begone leaving all civilization FOREVER." Cantos then casts Haste on himself and sends a quick thought to Nonam, "If this works you need to get Sturtavent and Orotai freed quickly, then run. If able I will rejoin you all soon." Cantos then assumes a total defensive stance awaiting A'Tath's reply.
Nonam d20+13=32 Friday January 11th, 2002 3:36:48 PM
The mage yells out again. "Get the nooses off of them! That's what holding them in submission!". The mage moves across in front of the stage. He lines up guards 4&5, A'tath, and High Priest #2. A cone of white frost emanates from his finger blasting through all 4 of them. (Rolled Spell Resistance check of 32).
Results from Round #2 Attacks 3d20(15+17+12)=44 5d20(16+18+7+7+4)=52 d100=52 5d3(1+1+3+1+2)=8 Friday January 11th, 2002 4:50:49 PM
Qualde heals Jus. Jus's fireball goes off without a hitch. He engulfs himself, Guards #8, 12,13,15,&16. 8&12 save, the others don't. All are still standing and look ready. Tericus's Blade Barrier does something amazing. He centers it on the other side of the Wall of Iron - and succeeds (gave 20% of failure since you couldn't directly see the center point for at least part of the spell). Now it gets loud as the blades hammer against the iron wall. It's such a incredibly loud sound (like a large caliber rifle at close range) that everyone on that side of the stage must make a reaction save DC 15 or miss 1 attack next round (Jus, Qualde, Tericus). The still wobbling wall of iron is eventually penetrated by the blades as the deadly disk whirls randomly around the center point (horizontal, vertical, diagonal). Shrapnell flies everywhere for the next 2 rounds as it cuts out a piece of the iron. Everyone on that side of the dais make a Dex check to avoid being hit for 8 DMG (Jus, Qualde, Tericus). The wall of iron makes the boards of the dais around it to buckle and move violently. Guards 16 and 14 cannot do anything but try and maintain balance. Guild Mages 4&5 fall backward. If that didn't cause them to lose their spell they were casting, then the whirling blades did as they cut into them terribly doing 49 DMG. Guard 14 gets hit for 49 DMG as well and cannot get out of the spell area.
Gareth hits A'tath for some damage, but not nearly enough. Cantos stands and yells challenges to A'tath - barely 3 feet from Sturtavent. Addinien cuts into Mage #3 since he's closed with him. He staggers but stands and doesn't lose his spell. Nonam blasts all 4 of his targets with success. All 4 still stand.
The Bad Guys? - Round 2 Stage 6d20(9+9+20+3+9+3)=53 6d20(18+6+2+2+7+3)=38 d20=13 3d8(8+7+5)+15=35 Friday January 11th, 2002 5:09:45 PM
Guild Mages #1 and #2 lose their spells as the Priest of Alemi activates the Anti-Magic Field. Their robes also immediately change color from the colors those of the guild to jet black. They wear silver based broaches with an obsidian dragon visage on them. Roll knowledge check to recognize them (distance and your own preoccupation serve as large distractions). Guard #1 is visibly shaken as he hears the cry of the Acolyte of Alemi #1 - as if realizing what he is doing. He refrains from taking his attack of opportunity and cannot bring himself to finish off the priest of good. You notice his equipment brandishes symbols of freedom and justice. He bellows loudly, "The Council is wrong! I will not!" He sees who they really are and decides to attack mage #1 with whom he is closed hitting him twice. High Priest #1 loses his spell as the Anti-Magic Field is activated...
High Priest #2 shakes his head in disgust as the crazed giant appears he's going to break into his blade barrier - clearly not intending to drop it even for him to finish the job. (No way he's letting the likes of the Storm Dragons anywhere near him - even with one such as A'tath fighting on his side (at least he supposed to be...) Seeing the tide turning with the new combatant entering the field, he casts Summon Monster 9 and another - even greater air elemental (an elder) appears. It stands/floats in front of the other powerful - but clearly lesser air elemental (Hey, Caeroldra has power too!).
Guards #4 and #5 sneer at Gareth and attack as one of them exclaims "That is exactly the point fool! They are good! Marteaus is the true way. He will reward us for our actions this day! May chaos reign!" They attack the warrior 4 times - hitting nothing but air (Displacement). They begin shouting obscenities at him as their frustration grows. A'tath, knowing that he cannot get to either dragon this round without risking serious injury or even death, turns his wrath on those who are keeping him from fulfilling his mission. He convinces his sword to let him focus elsewhere for now. He spats as Cantos calls him coward. Hearing the perverse language of the vile guards - and their loyalty to one so chaotic - he executes a whirlwind attack maneuver and hits guards 4&5 and Gareth with one swipe (Whirlwind Attack Feat). He cuts both guards literally in half. Their surprised faces near the ground and see their legs still standing. The blade appears to pass straight through Gareth, not hurting him at all (Displaced - missed roll). The huge being glares at Cantos. "I was battling for my beliefs CENTURIES before you were born - and I will be battling for them centuries after you are nothing but DUST! Can't you understand that dragons wish to CONTROL US ALL! Whether they call themselves good, evil, or anything else! Freedom, I say! Choose freedom!" He turns back toward Sturtavent and is clearly going to attempt to cut him down through the barrier - seems the sword is using his fervor to make him forget common sense and attack anyway. Mage #3 responds with a magic missile on Addinein (16 DMG). He curses since he held his lightning bolt because guards 4&5 were in his path - and he might hit A'tath. Now it looks like he would've done better blasting them all! Two of the three guards who were commanded by Tericus to freeze resist the command and close with Gareth, both attacking once. The first hits for 12 DMG, the second should've hit, but catches nothing but air.
Guards 8,10,12,13&15 miss 1 attack. 11 gets 2. Guard 8,12,&15 score hits on Jus (35 DMG). All three on Tericus miss. Guard #14 tries to keep his feet from the buckling dais and dodge the blades (Nice knowing you...).
The Bad Guys? - Round 2 Grounds 15d6(2+5+5+4+4+5+2+6+3+6+6+4+6+4+3)=65 15d6(1+6+1+4+5+1+1+5+1+2+5+2+2+5+2)=43 15d6(6+3+4+2+2+6+6+5+6+6+1+1+4+4+2)=58 15d6(2+4+6+4+5+1+4+5+6+6+1+4+3+6+5)=62 15d6(6+1+5+4+2+6+5+3+2+5+2+4+6+4+3)=58 24d20(19+8+18+12+1+15+9+7+13+19+4+17+4+5+20+5+9+2+18+17 Friday January 11th, 2002 5:49:39 PM
Guard #3 is also shaken up by the Priest of Alemi he's attacking. His curse hit the soldier more soundly than any physical attack he could have delivered. His resolve hardens and instead of attacking the priest he turns, leaps back on the dais, and closes with Mage #1 - fighting his fear of the elementals. Flying HOL Priests 1&2 Blast the Priest of Alemi #2 with flamestrikes yet again hitting him for 108 DMG. HOL Priest #3 hits Alemi Priest #3 with a flame strike as does #4 for 120 DMG. Priest #5 blasts Nonam with a flamestrike for 58 DMG (sv for 1/2). Priest #2 continues to be shredded by the giant eagle.
The Elite City guard really cuts into the freedom fighters. The archer gets cut down too. Only one mage remains who is not closed on by the guard.
Observations - Round 2 Friday January 11th, 2002 6:10:25 PM
You notice that several of the city guard are clad differently - some normal, some in black. Looks like those closest to the council area are loyal to Martaeus. Several on the fringes were merely trying to support the Council and keep order - not really liking politics. And then others that are in rebellion against the Council. Those swordsmen who are engaging the city guard are in chain or plate with burgundy capes. They are clasped with gold dragon pendants (not Gold Dragon pendants... no association). There are others with green capes with silver dragon pendants as well. Not all the mages are who they appear to be. Some on the stage are clearly not from the guild but some are. Some in the crowd are clearly from the guild, others not. There is strife in all directions you look. One of the most troubling things is to see the Hands of Love act in such an overtly evil way. Minions of Marteaus you could at least understand, but her?
Near the end of the round you notice three shimmering gates beginning to form around the dais. You also hear the thrumming of soldiers in unified step run marching toward your location. Hard to say how much time you really have or how many there are. With the huge wall of force down many more have joined the fray. Allies mostly with more on the way. But will there be enough...?
