Love is in the Air!

When it rains... DM DEH
Monday January 7th, 2002 12:24:21 PM

Six months have passed since the parade. The popularity of the Storm Dragons has grown considerably as they continue to help the people of New Elenna and The Floating City without prejucide.

A Town Crier comes around the Storm Dragon's manor in the Floating City announcing that the Temples of Alemi, Pantheon and the One (amongst others) are offering to accept clerics of the ex-God of War and Courage. Any such clerics are to go to the temples of the god they wish to inquire after and discuss it with the clerics there. They will be welcomed and urged to give their allegiance to a new god in return for being allowed to worship that God in Domi fashion in his memory.

Talk of the gods centers around the continued instability of the two factions of Caeroldra. The Hands of Love appear to be approaching their form of worship in a rather brutal manner. The Servants of Passion are holding nightly orgies enraging the populace while enticing individuals one by one.

There is layer upon layer of gossip. Most of it is just talk, but it shows the worry of the populace and the breaking down of their trust in those who protect them - one reason the popularity of the Storm Dragons grows.

One morning you receive a summons from the Overlord - which you quickly answer. You find him in one of his council rooms with a look of grave concern. Brushing by all pretense, pomp and circumstance, he gets right to the point. "News comes of a man currently in Plateau City - an important man so they say - who is denouncing all the city rulers as dragons in disguise, out to enslave everyone. The man's name is A'tath, and he is due to visit the Floating City in the next day or so and make similar claims. The word is that 'everyone' in Plateau City is going crazy, and that people are starting to panic. Anyone with any remote dragon connection whatsoever is being victimized. It was also announced today and confirmed that the Gold Dragons - according to the Plateau City Council - have turned evil, attacking the Ambassador from Aisildur in his Consulate. The Council has overruled Sturtavent's hesitation and had branded them outlaws. There is a 10,000gp reward for information that leads to the location and arrest of The Gold Dragons. Also, the Red Dragons have responded with a cross-accusation of The High Council and have stated their unerring support of Sturtavent. And the Green Dragons have not been located for a comment." With a sigh he sits down in one of the many beautifully adorned chairs in the chamber and continues.

"The truth of all these rumours is debatable, but one of our reliable sources from one of the underground thieves guilds says that A'tath is real enough, and has accused Ackard the thieves Guildmaster in Plateau City of being a dragon, along with a lot more 'higher-ups'. Apparently this A'tath man had some kind of device, which could point out anyone with dragon ancestry within 100 paces and 'smite them down'. He didn't know about people going crazy over there though, but he reckoned that dragon people ought to watch out all the same." The news appears to drape quite heavily over the Overlord's shoulders. "The strain of governing since the demise of Domi has been great. And now for our efforts, we are to be attacked and thrown down. I hold no strong feelings for those in Plateau City, but surely they desrve better than this...." Looking up at the Storm Dragons he voices his concerns. "I fear for Sturtavent - and others. Apparently the Council there is listening to this - A'tath, whoever he is - and they are going on a dragon hunt! Then this guy is supposed to come here. I would suggest you make your way to Plateau City immediately and look in on Sturtavent. And find out who this person is who the Council has put their faith. What are his motives, why is he there, where did he come from, but most importantly, what are his plans for Floating City? This is all I know, I would appreciate hearing from you as soon as possible."

As you leave the Overlord's office, and make your way back to your mansion to prepare, it happens. The call comes through the Realm Rings from Valdor. "We're getting out of town. The populace has turned against us. Remain "friends" with the council as long as you can without... becoming that which you fight against."

As you look at each other with surprise - since you were told that the other groups couldn't communicate on these rings - another communication follows from an unknown female voice. "Ohh Holy Alemi! They have Sturtavent and are taking him to A'tath to reveal that he's a dragon! Oh, they come for me! Save us!". And then there's nothing...

All right guys, I need character sheets updated with XPs and sent to me ASAP. There will be combat and we won't start it until I get them all (unless there is a holdout or 2 and then I'll simply ignore their posts until I recieve the character sheet... :) Good day!). Email is dhott@nortelnetworks.com and gareth-3@juno.com. Send it to both.

Monday January 7th, 2002 4:50:34 PM

The warrior attempts to respond to Valdor, and then to the female voice. Once that fails he looks to the others. "Let's get going guys. Sounds like we have no time. Nonam, can you get us to Plateau City now?"

OOC: All, for sake of time, let's assume everyone went prepared to travel when we went to the Overlord.

Jus
Tuesday January 8th, 2002 2:39:04 AM

During the break, Jus approaches Gareth and Nonam while they are together. "Hey guys, I've been visiting the Catacombs and the Black Genie on and off lately. I'd like to do a lot of things, but honestly," Jus shrugs, "my deep pockets aren't deep enough for what I want."

"Here's my proposition," Jus continues. "We've been collecting a lot of odds and ends -- things left over from party bounty, and things given to the party. Since we haven't used any of it in a long time, I'd like us to cash it in and split the cash."

Backing off a step, Jus says, "Now before you look to me for a comprehensive list, I let you know that I don't have it. I know we got a Horn of Blasting once. I think I recall some minor magic weapons that no one claimed." Looking to Gareth, Jus continues, "I'm hoping Gareth kept a list, since he and his Bag of Holding has been our pack mule. Otherwise, I think we'd better go through any notes we've kept."

OOC: I'll try to get the character sheet update soon. Can't guarantee it by tomorrow, though.

Addinein
Tuesday January 8th, 2002 10:17:47 AM

During the six months of downtime, Addinein familiarizes himself with his new surroundings. Still hesitant about how his people interact around the town, Addinein doesn't spend much time outside of their abode. But everytime he gets a chance, he tries to participate in the discussions, and the goings on around his new home.

Nonam
Tuesday January 8th, 2002 11:03:21 AM

"I'm betting we'd better hurry or they'll finish off Sturtavent. Some of the Council would be more than happy to get rid of him. Of course, if they have him, then we're dealing with a someone or someones powerful enough to capture a dragon or perhaps two (if that woman we heard was a dragon). That's a problem. If everyone is ready, let's go!". The mage pulls out his rod and quickly begins the wind walk.

I do this because I love you! DM DEH
Tuesday January 8th, 2002 11:50:14 AM

Our group of hardy adventurers appear near the High Lord Mayor's mansion and offices. The area is in a frenzy and it looks like everyone is headed for Dragon Square. You catch snippets of conversation such as: "They have him in chains!" "Looks like they're really going to do it!" "By the gods! He's really a dragon!"

As you approach the square you see there are probably thousands of people there, and they don't look too much more civil than when you saw the mob attacking the very seat of government. They are all looking accusingly at each other, wondering if any who stand among them are dragons. Up on a constructed dais you see the entire council, many other city leaders and officials, and most troubling you see Sturtavent and Oratai - the high priestess of Alemi in chains! Next to them are standing 2 high priests of Caeroldra, in the order of The Hands of Love each holding a noose around the prisoners like a leash. It's one of the most troubling and demeaning things you've ever seen to witness these priests leering at the two figures with a crazed look in their eyes while they try to look lovingly toward the crowd.

As you make your way closer to the dais Grendalf, prominent member of the high council, stands, silences the crowd, and begins to speak with the help of a giant magic mouth for volume. "Citizens of New Elenna! These are indeed troubled times we live in! Even as we struggle to recover from the death of the beloved god Domi, we find ourselves deserted by our most respected Knights of the Realm! The following proclamations have been made by the Council and are effective immediately. As a result of their actions, the Gold Dragons are hereby declared as outlaws for grievous crimes against the ambassadors from Ailsidur. They are being hunted down and any information provided to us that leads to their capture will be rewarded with 10,000 GPs!" The crowd gasps at the news, for what was rumor has now been made official. "Secondly, the Red Dragons and the Green Dragons - although their Consortium was disbanded - were still both considered allies of the state. However, both groups have officially denounced the council and have broken all ties with the government here. Consequently, it is my duty to announce that these groups are no longer in good standing with the government of New Elenna and are no longer authorized to act on its behalf in any fashion. Any such actions from them will be considered High Treason and they will be punished accordingly!" The crowd at this point begins again to become unruly. The guards have to get involved to restore order. Everyone is looking around trying to figure out what to do. During this time Grendalf notices you nearing the dais. He nods as if in relief to see you here. "Fortunately, we have one good piece of news. The Storm Dragons join us today!" (Crowd cheers loudly), "Since their appointment they have performed their duties admirably and have signifcantly improved relations with the Floating City and have restored order in the countryside!" (More cheering). "This bodes well for our future." The councilman smiles your way a long while.

This is going to hurt me more than it does you... (DM DEH)
Tuesday January 8th, 2002 12:16:06 PM

With a grim and sad look, the concilmember continues his speech. "And finally, the most grievous news of all." He looks back at Sturtavent and Oratai. His face turns red in rage and he has to take a moment to regain his composure before continuing. "It has come to our attention that there is a conspiracy against all the people of New Elenna. A number of dragons - real dragons - have conspired together to take control of our country and enslave the entire populace!" If you thought the gasps at the first announcements were large, they are nothing compared to what is taking place now. The crowd now murmurs in fear as well as outrage at the pronouncement. Even though most had already heard about the taking of the former High Lord Mayor into custody, and even some had heard that he might be a dragon, nobody knew why this was happening. "Two of your most prominent leaders have been at the center of this debacle, and have been - as you can see - taken into custody. With the help of a great ally, we have discovered this plot and have quashed it soundly. There are others among us who are of dragonkind - and I can assure they will be found - but we will begin the cleansing by exposing these two for what they are!"

A huge man makes his way to the dais. You didn't notice him before because he was behind and off to the side. The crowd quickly gets out of this fearsome man's way. He stands easily 8' tall - perhaps taller. He bulges at every possible location with muscles, all of which twitch and move impressively as he strides. You've never seen any fighter this powerful. Not Valdor, not Gareth, probably not both put together. He wears some sort of red metal armor that molds itself perfectly to his form - as if it is a second layer of skin. It appears like scale armor to be specific. But it somehow looks like it would be extremely hard to penetrate. The man carries a two-handed sword but clearly wields it one-handed like an average man would a bastard sword. This must be A'Tath. He approaches Sturtavent, smiles smugly, and holds his huge weapon in front of him. As he does a mist appears above and behind the deposed High Lord Mayor and an image of a huge ancient gold dragon appears behind him. The crowd collectively gasps at the sight. Walking over to Oratai, he performs the same ritual, but this time a huge silver dragon form appears behind her.

So its true! They are both dragons of the most powerful kind!

Grendalf of the High Council comes forward with a branding iron and marks them both with a brand that says 'Dragon' on their foreheads. Neither cries out in pain, only look somber at the fate they are clearly about to suffer. Grendalf slaps Sturtavent and reads a proclamation loudly:

"Whereas as Sturtavent has conspired to hide his nefarious identity from the people he was charged to protect...

"And whereas Sturtavent has conspired to enslave the populace of New Elenna..."

"Be it confirmed and announced that he is found guilty of treason and sentenced to die this day."

He turns to Oratai. "We'll let you watch him die and then it will be your turn! Maybe others of your kind will see this and know they cannot bully us or have their way with us!"

The crowd goes into a frenzy now. Many are clearly opposed to this action, most are confused, many are looking on in approval. There appear to be several in the crowd that look about to attack.

The huge warrior strides forward and bellows so that all can hear. "By the proclamation of the the High Council, I execute you!"

With horror on their faces the crowd goes wild. The warrior prepares to raise his sword and strike Sturtavent. It is clear that his sword is specially made to slaying dragons and that Sturtavent - unable to defend himself for some reason - will likely not survive one attack, perhaps two at most if he's really an ancient dragon. Many of the crowd rush the stage, only to be held back by the guards, several spells begin to go off, fights break out with screams of "No!", but nobody has made the stage. The high priests of Caeroldra begin to chant, several mages step up and begin to cast to counteract the crowd. More priests from the order of the Hands of Love appear above the dais area, flying and prepared to cast. All semblance of order is now lost. It's about to get REALLY ugly.

(OK, melee begins only after I get the character sheets. Don't post attacks unless you've sent it. Other actions are OK.)

Gareth  d20+3=18 d20+27=37
Tuesday January 8th, 2002 1:27:14 PM

Horrified at what is about to take place the warrior leaps onto the stage (Dex 18). He bellows at the huge man and draws his bastard sword. "Hold or I will stop you! He's a dragon but he's a good dragon. What is his crime other than not revealing this fact?". If the man doesn't stop he uses his attack to parry the blow to Sturtavent with both hands (Hit AC 37).

Addinein
Wednesday January 9th, 2002 12:11:52 AM

Watching what is going on, Addinein is not sure what to make about what is going on. When the first sign of trouble comes, Addinein is not ready. Addinein looks to the others, to see what their reactions are to this apparent scene.

Cantos
Wednesday January 9th, 2002 12:25:13 AM

Cantos looks around with alarm then follows Gareth on the dias. "What in the name of all that is holy do you think you are doing?" the bard shouts. "You will not strike down a man without a trial... it will not happen today nor any other. You will stop now or be stopped." Cantos then turns and looks at the council. "Gentlemen this will stop, or you are no better than those you accuse of trying to destroy this city and all it stands for. If he is a dragonkin - and I say 'if' because I know not what this man who says he is can do or say - he has still served new Elenna and you... What would you have done - civil war or a restoration of law and order - choose quickly or it will be chosen for you."

OOC: Cantos' character sheet is forthcoming and Addienin your min/max is done and Jerry will have it to you by Sun I hope. My son is in the hospital so it will be then at the earliest.

Jus
Wednesday January 9th, 2002 1:46:27 AM

Jus has no idea how the next few minutes will turn out. He makes certain to keep his hands away from his weapons, knowing he can use Quick Draw to get what is needed, if it comes to melee.

"Careful, Gareth," Jus calls. "Although his actions are always foremost, Gareth makes a point." Jus swings his arm wide, encompassing the crowd around them. "We've all been taught since childhood that there are good dragons and there are bad dragons." Jus raises his voice and asks the crowds, "Are not Golds and Silvers protectors of all that is good?" Turning back to the Council, Jus asks, "Why kill good dragons? Should we not find out why they masquerade among us?" Jus flicks his hand towards the two prisoners in dismissal, "If they do not serve our good, then perhaps we would benefit from their death. But let us," again Jus indicates the crowds, "know their misdeeds!"

Jus stops, looks puzzled, and turns back to examine Sturtavent and Oratai. "And how do two mighty dragons allow themselves to be humbled like this? Perhaps the dragons have fled and left bewitched two innocent bystanders to take their place? Are they already dead? Something about this is not right."

Finally, Jus looks at A'Tath, "And this... man who comes claiming they are dragons, has he been tested himself? His red armor and daunting size," Jus gives A'Tath a nod, complimenting him even though he is suspicious of this man, "seems to fit him too well. We know where the council comes from, but do we know from where A'Tath hies?"

Nonam
Wednesday January 9th, 2002 2:39:35 AM

"Just like Gareth to use his brawn and Jus to use his mouth," Nonam thinks to himself. Nonam calmly pulls out his Scroll of Rary's Telepathic Bond and uses it to create a bond between Nonam, Qualde, and the two claimed to be Oratai and Sturtavent. Once established, he tries to determine if both are dragons [for pretense, at least] and why the two cannot fight.

"Qualde, you with me?" Nonam thinks to the Drow.

Nonam readies his Ring of Mass Teleportation to transport the party and Oratai and Sturtavent out of here, in case it is necessary.

Tericus
Wednesday January 9th, 2002 5:38:42 AM

Confused and horrified at what is happening, Tericus jumps up on the platform next to Gareth. "You all must stop this!!" Tericus cries to the council "This is not the right way!!"

You thought THAT hurt!?! (DM DEH)  d20+40=58 d20+30=41 d20+20=26
Wednesday January 9th, 2002 11:00:43 AM

Results: The comments of Jus, Tericus, and Cantos are mostly drowned out by the crowd and commotion (thousands of voices). The only ones who seem to really hear anything are the 3 Council members that you had deemed of good heart - Valiano, Leunenon, and Shanleigh. They seem defeated and ignored, as if they are nothing more than decoration for the sake of appearances and are looking on helplessly. The other Council members - the cult god worshipers - are glaring at Gareth and the others for their outburst. Grendalf especially seems outraged that an interruption has been attempted.

None of this matters, though, because A'Tath pays no heed to Gareth. He strikes at Sturtavent what would have otherwise been a death blow (Hit AC 58) - except that Gareth partially parries it. The sheer strength of this one is simply too much for Gareth to overcome - even using both hands! His huge sword still hits Sturtavent but it does not do much damage. Although from your best guess it should have.

In a rage he turns to face the hero, who looks pretty small in front of the huge man. From somewhere near him you hear a wailing "No! Pay the gnats no heed! Strike the dragons! KILL! KILL! KILL!" You can guess the voice is coming from his sword.

Glaring at the group and clearly having trouble with his battle of wills with the weapon, he states flatly. "ALL dragons are a scourge to the Wold! I consider myself fortunate to be able to help eradicate the vermin! You yourself were my ally in this by killing the red dragon in Cinnamon Valley - but no more!" Because of the lay of the dais he cannot turn his sword on Gareth and maintain his position in front of Sturtavent. So instead he plants a backhand fist in his face (26 DMG), sending him flying into the crowd (Gareth make Fort check DC 20 to remain concious). He ignores Tericus and Cantos, turns back to the gold dragon and attempts to strike again.

Nonam quickly gains contact with the dragons. Sturtavent urgently exclaims, "Nonam, the nooses are keeping us from doing anything. We can do nothing unless they are removed. If you fight A'Tath, you will all die quickly. He is beyond you. Get the nooses off and then I can act!" The effort for Sturtavent to send that message was clearly taxing. The magic of the nooses must be strong indeed!

Cantos realizing that even though he does not have the needed power to stop A'Tath strikes the huge man twice hitting AC 37 and 22 for 7 and 3 points of damage." You will harm no man without a trial before my life and blade are laid low." Cantos bellows. "And you claim to be men of freedom and ideas you cowards of the Council... you scourge I will die before I allow a man to be laid low for no cause." Cantos then steps in front of the two chained and assumes a defensive posture. "If this be my last song then let it be one of good over evil, justice over injustice, and of mercy over vengeance. Let this be the song of Cantos the Bard heard eternally!!"

Whom Shall You Serve?  d20+40=43
Wednesday January 9th, 2002 12:56:22 PM

With the striking of Gareth, all chaos breaks out. Many run in fear of one who could do that to a warrior of his caliber. Others turn grimly and decide to fight. Among the number are many priests of Alemi, who take aim at the high priest of Caeroldra holding Oratai and the HoL priests flying over the dais. Mages from the guild - some on the stage, others in the crowd - begin throwing spells. A'Tath is hit with a cone of cold, lightning bolt, dozens of magic missiles, and a couple of flamestrikes. Even through all of this he delivers a blow to the ensnared dragon but it distracts him enough that his strike on Sturtavent simply bounces off. The huge warrior still stands as he sets to strike again - all but ignoring the melee and damage. Those holding the dragon take damage and deal some out, but they are still standing. Several priests fall from the sky but many more are still up. Most of the mages on the stage are still casting. One of them gets up a wall of force splitting the crowd and shielding the dais from the rain of arrows and spells of the mages in the crowd. The city guard, still apparently loyal to the council, regroups and blocks the stage, cutting down anyone who comes near. The Storm Dragons are between the guards and the stage.

Details: Enemies - There are 7 HoL priests still flying (Love really IS in the air...), 5 mages on the dais, 50 guards (35 behind you, 15 scattered around the dais), one high priest with each dragon, A'Tath is in front of Sturtavent, 7 councilmembers to his left (4 of whom are clearly evil, 3 who are not). Allies - 3 mages are in front of the wall of force behind the swordsman (listed below), 3 priests of Alemi, 1 archer, 15 swordsmen, 2 dragons, and you. Those allies behind the wall of force are effectively out of the fight. Good luck...

The 7 HoL priests in the air focus on the priests of Alemi yelling things like "Treason! Sacrelidge to your own god! etc". The mages cast at the archer and the 3 mages, the 35 guards attack the 15 swordsmen, the other 15 guards close ranks around the councilmembers and the high priests. 2 guards are near Cantos and Tericus but hold attacks because the two are not holding their weapons. 2 guards are near Jus but hold for the same reason. Grendalf is screaming something but it is lost in the noise and no guards focus on the Storm Dragons (they are allies are they not?).

It's your turn...

Jus  d20+18=38
Wednesday January 9th, 2002 6:46:12 PM

Obviously the Storm Dragons will no longer be in favor of the Council, so Jus tries to use things to the party's advantage. While pulling out components for a spell, Jus yells to Grendalf [hoping A'tath will hear], "What's going on, Grendalf? The last time we met, you revealed your hopes to bring dragons back to the Wold! Did the council overrule you? Or do you hope this will enrage the dragons and force them back!"

Jus casts defensively [concentration check = 38], coating A'tath's sword with a thick layer of Grease [A'tath must make a Reflex save every round for 8 rounds or he drops the sword. A Reflex save is then required to pick it back up. No Spell Resistance allowed].

Nonam
Wednesday January 9th, 2002 7:04:43 PM

Since Qualde is not here, Nonam includes Cantos in the Rary's Telepathic Bond instead.

"Qualde, Addinein!" Nonam calls to those standing near him. "Release their ropes and they will be freed!"

Nonam doesn't use his Ring of Mass Teleportation yet, waiting for someone to remove the ropes from the dragons. Instead, he casts Wall of Force, creating a barrier between A'Taht and the dragons, running diagonal across the platform. [See emailed drawing].

Glad that someone has asked something that he does, Addinein moves with all haste to help Sturtavent. (60' with boots, and with feat (name escapes me, not at home)).

E-mail not rcd as of midnight EST

Addinein tries his best to move and remove the nooses around the 2 dragons' necks. IF he can use his rapier to come up and under from inside the loop of the noose, in order to throw the rope off, he will do so. If he has to grab the noose and throw it over the head of the noose wearer, then he will do so.

I roll 5 20's just to give you numbers to work with. For whatever rolls I might need.

(sigh) None of them anything spectacular, and probably not helpful. :) :(

Tericus
Thursday January 10th, 2002 5:36:13 AM

Surrounded by guards, Tericus quickly casts a spell and yells out "FREEZE!!" (cast greater command, lasts for 11 rds and affects guards 6-15, save vs tn 19 or be frozen in place) Once his spell goes off Tericus begins to move towards the council, drawing his mace as he moves forward.

Cantos
Thursday January 10th, 2002 11:31:48 AM

Cantos reaches out with his off hand and removes the noose around the High Lord Mayor's neck and faces A'Tath again making sure that he is fighting defensively. Cantos uses the bond to Nonam. "Sorry I guess I can't just seem to wait and let people die, I hope we get out of this."

Swordsmen 1-15 attack the elite guard. They all fight very well and are clearly heros in the own right. 13 of the elite guard fall in the first flurry of attacks, and 4 more fall as the swordsmen cleave into their foes (Cleave Feat). The archer puts 3 arrows into one of the flying HoL Priests, two which explode on impact. And he falls from the sky. Mage #1 lets fly a volley of 10 unusually large magic missiles (one from each digit) directly at the Caeroldra high priest holding Oratai. He grins ear to ear as they explode right into him. Mage #2 sends a similar spell at the Caeroldra high priest holding Sturtavent, but curses as they explode harmlessly off Nonam's wall of force. Mage #3 blasts 3 of the flying HoL priests (4,5,6) with a "fire oval" - apparetly a modified fireball. These guys are good! Cleric #1 casts Etherialness and simply disappears at his position. At the end of the round he reappears directly in front of guild mages #1 and #2 and right behind the Caeroldra high priest holding Oratai. Priest #2 Summons a huge celestail Dire bear that appears right next to High Priest #2 holding Sturtavent - which promply whack him across the head. Priest #3 casts and a giant eagle appears right next to flying priest #2 which begins to rake and claw him.

As bedlam and chaos thunder across the square, the council decides it would be better to be somewhere else as does the crowd. Apparently preparing for this contingency (noting the controversial nature of the decision), a shimmering gate appears next to them and all 7 of them go through. It promptly closes. Guild Mage #5 did the honors for that one. A'tath bellows as his next blow bounces off Nonam's wall of force. The grease spell misses the sword handle as the huge warrior deftly avoids it (description says succesful REF save defeats spell on a wielded item. Got DC 37). He also takes damage from Cantos first attack, but not the second. He takes more note of Gareth's attack, but still does not turn to face them directly! With his next attack the wiley man strikes the wall of force once more with his sword, and this time it shudders and collapses into nothing (disintigrate ablility on the sword). A'tath shifts himself so that the is virtually no space between him and his quarry. Guild Mage #4 forks a lightning bolt beginning right in front of the city guard and blasts swordsmen 14&15, Mage #3 and the archer. The city guard 19-48 attack the swordsmen at the behest of their 3 captains (16-18) - who also close and engage seeing the ability of their opponents. Guards 6,7 & 9 freeze in place at Tericus' command, Guards 8,11,12,&13 make their save and resist the command. Guards 10,14,&15 do not hear the command and so are not affected (1000's of people running and screaming, 100's near the stage.). Guild Mage #3 casts a fireball - that hits the wall of force and explodes right next to him. It catches him, Sturtavent, high priest #2, the dire bear, and high priest #1. Mages#1 and #2 cast heightened and improved magic missile at Alemi priest #1. Seeing priest #1 appear, guards 1&2 close and attack him. He's looking pretty bad. Guards 4&5 close on Gareth and attack for 21 DMG. Guards 11,10,&13 close with Tericus and attack. He takes 3 hits for 29 DMG. Guards 8,15,&12 close and attack Jus. He's hit 4 times for 54 DMG. Both High Priests of Caeroldra cast a blade barrier (20d6), surrounding themselves and their individual prisoner. The dire bear is cut to shreds, A'tath get stung but makes his save and misses most of the damage (failed SR). Cantos, roll d6 to determine if your hit by it or not - 65 DMG if you're hit (go ahead and roll save for 1/2 as well). Guard #2 is cut down by the other blade barrier, and Alemi priest #1 gets hit, but somehow manages to survive. There are still 6 flying priests, the eagle is cutting HOL priest #2 to ribbons. Priest #1 blasts Alemi Priests #2 with a flame strike, #4 blasts Alemi #3 with the same. #6 also hits Alemi #3 with flame strike. Priest #4 hits Cantos with a flame strike for 42 DMG. Addinien his struck with flame by Priest #5 for 32 DMG. Guild mages #4 and #5 are up to something. Guild Mage #3 shakes off his charred hair and is still standing. Cantos and Addinein could not get to Sturtavent due to Nonam's wall of Force (and they would have been nailed by A'tath' attack of opportunity...). Qualde just stands there. Cantos (blades & fire) and Addinein (fire) save for 1/2.

I left the dashed line wall of force in the BMP file to show it's location - but it's gone. It's been sent. Let me know if you don't get it.

Your turn. I'll post the good guys Round #2 today too.

Thursday January 10th, 2002 11:12:26 PM

The swordsmen launch into the elite guard with significant results. After their combined attacks on the Elite Guard there are only 12 of the 35 left standing. An impressive showing indeed! They re-align their defenses to protect the casters and archer as they continue to press the attack. The archer looses 3 more arrows - 2 hit Priest #6 - and blasts him from the sky.

Mage #1 blasts High Priest #1 with 10 more improved and maximized magic missiles that go through the blade barrier unerringly. It's clear he felt their sting. Mage #2 blasts High Priest #2 with the same. Mage #3 casts a wall of iron - which he places directly in front of Guard #18 and Guild Mages #4&5, obscuring their view of the melee. It immediately crashes through the wooden dais landing with a thud on the paving stones below on the ground. It waivers dangerously in the air, not yet ready to tip one way or another. Priest of Alemi #3 calls fervently to his god and casts a flame strike stright down on HoL Priest #1 for 51 DMG.

The Good Guys Strike Back!, Round #2
Thursday January 10th, 2002 11:32:37 PM

As the crowd gets away from the fight, you are now able to hear a bit better than before. But it's loud - as is all melee.

The embattled and mortally wounded priest of Alemi (#1) cries out to his god "Oh my god Alemi! If it please you I beg give your servant the ablity to free your High Priestess!" He casts an Anti-magic field and falls toward Oratai through the blade barrier.

Priest of Alemi #2 yells at guard #3 before he casts, "Curse all you who would stand against our god Alemi and in league with the legions of darkness!" He casts Greater Planar Ally and about the largest air elemantal ever seen appears before him in the air! (Hey, do you think the order of Alemi would stand by while their highest ranking high priestess was executed by the minions of evil? Riiiight...)

Oratai and Sturtavent do nothing. Nonam hears whispers via his spell - "Hurry. Many will die and they will bring reinforcements..." You see the dragons nearly falter as if the weight of the Wold was on their shoulders.

Those still caught behind the wall of force are organizing. Apparently somebody has showed up that can cast disintegrate - and does...

Good guys are done.

Jus (AC 25; HP 18)  d20+18=38 d20+8=18 8d6(6+2+6+6+2+3+4+2)=31
Friday January 11th, 2002 12:39:43 AM

Jus reels from the attacks on him and almost falls. He manages to keep his feet, but he is definitely hurting (18 HP left).

Knowing he can't withstand another attack like that, Jus hopes luck stays with him and he can level the field a little. Casting defensively again (made check with natural 20), Jus casts fireball to catch all the men around him and excluding Tericus and Nonam, hoping his new robe earns its purchase [Can't tell scale from map, so I can't be more specific].

The flames engulf Jus, but, sure enough, they do not damage him as his spell doesn't overcome the Spell Resistance bestowed him by his cloak [Rolled 18 on SR check; whoever else is in the flames gets 31 points of damage; Reflex save for half].

Giving a huge sigh of relief that the flames didn't kill him, Jus prepares to get hit again -- and hopefully stay standing. The only other thing he manages to do is yell a feeble "I could use some help here" to his friends.

Tericus  d20+25=38 11d6(5+1+5+6+6+4+5+6+3+5+3)=49
Friday January 11th, 2002 5:13:55 AM

Hearing that Jus is in trouble and seeing the destruction the two guild mages are causing (4 and 5), Tericus concentrates hard on casting his next spell (concentration check of 38 due to being in combat while attemping to cast), focusing on guard #14, Tericus casts blade barrier centered on him, extending the barrier out its full 30ft radius, hoping to catch the two guild mages and any of the other guards he can with it, for a total of 49 pts of damage.

Addinein  d20+8=11
Friday January 11th, 2002 8:26:46 AM

Addinein is washed over by the sheet of flame (failed save).

Hmmmm. no map anywhere that I can see.

Addinein continues to make his way towards the accused. If needed, and the situation allows it, Addinein will cast Expeditious retreat, and continue towards the accused.

Qualde (Hasted)  d20+17=20 4d8(5+8+2+7)+12=34
Friday January 11th, 2002 10:43:57 AM

Qualde had been temporarily thrown by the sight of so many of Caeroldra's priesthood actually condoning this travesty. A sick feeling of premonition settles in her gut, and she lets anger wash over her to drown it out.

Jus' shout finally spurs her to action. Qualde activates her boots and hurries up onto the platform behind him to defensively (Conc=20, succeeds) cast Cure Critical Wounds, returning 34hp to the embattled elf. (burnt Control Water)

Gareth (50% displaced)  d20+27=39 d20+22=36 d20+17=28 d10+16=26 d10+16=25 d10+16=19
Friday January 11th, 2002 11:43:20 AM

Unwilling to let the giant man before him continue trying to take out Sturtavent, the warrior strikes 3 mighty blows on A'tath - the last of which bounces off harmlessly. He also notices when he strikes that many stone flakes seem to chip off him when he hits. (Hit AC 39,36,28 for 26+25+19=70 DMG).

He yells at the 2 guards attacking him "Why are you supporting this travesty. These dragons are GOOD not evil!".

Cantos
Friday January 11th, 2002 12:56:30 PM

Cantos look at A'Tath and realizes that if anyone is to free Sturtavent and Orotai that it must be done now. Stepping so that he can look A'Tath in the eye, Cantos levels his rapier at him and shouts, "Cursed dragonkin, defiler of truth, bedmate of evil, or cur of Marteaus whatever you may be -- now is the time you face the truth... cease this battle and pick up my gauge or forever be known as a craven and coward in front of all TRUE men... speak quickly foul beast or begone leaving all civilization FOREVER." Cantos then casts Haste on himself and sends a quick thought to Nonam, "If this works you need to get Sturtavent and Orotai freed quickly, then run. If able I will rejoin you all soon." Cantos then assumes a total defensive stance awaiting A'Tath's reply.

Nonam  d20+13=32
Friday January 11th, 2002 3:36:48 PM

The mage yells out again. "Get the nooses off of them! That's what holding them in submission!". The mage moves across in front of the stage. He lines up guards 4&5, A'tath, and High Priest #2. A cone of white frost emanates from his finger blasting through all 4 of them. (Rolled Spell Resistance check of 32).

Results from Round #2 Attacks  3d20(15+17+12)=44 5d20(16+18+7+7+4)=52 d100=52 5d3(1+1+3+1+2)=8
Friday January 11th, 2002 4:50:49 PM

Qualde heals Jus. Jus's fireball goes off without a hitch. He engulfs himself, Guards #8, 12,13,15,&16. 8&12 save, the others don't. All are still standing and look ready. Tericus's Blade Barrier does something amazing. He centers it on the other side of the Wall of Iron - and succeeds (gave 20% of failure since you couldn't directly see the center point for at least part of the spell). Now it gets loud as the blades hammer against the iron wall. It's such a incredibly loud sound (like a large caliber rifle at close range) that everyone on that side of the stage must make a reaction save DC 15 or miss 1 attack next round (Jus, Qualde, Tericus). The still wobbling wall of iron is eventually penetrated by the blades as the deadly disk whirls randomly around the center point (horizontal, vertical, diagonal). Shrapnell flies everywhere for the next 2 rounds as it cuts out a piece of the iron. Everyone on that side of the dais make a Dex check to avoid being hit for 8 DMG (Jus, Qualde, Tericus). The wall of iron makes the boards of the dais around it to buckle and move violently. Guards 16 and 14 cannot do anything but try and maintain balance. Guild Mages 4&5 fall backward. If that didn't cause them to lose their spell they were casting, then the whirling blades did as they cut into them terribly doing 49 DMG. Guard 14 gets hit for 49 DMG as well and cannot get out of the spell area.

Gareth hits A'tath for some damage, but not nearly enough. Cantos stands and yells challenges to A'tath - barely 3 feet from Sturtavent. Addinien cuts into Mage #3 since he's closed with him. He staggers but stands and doesn't lose his spell. Nonam blasts all 4 of his targets with success. All 4 still stand.

The Bad Guys? - Round 2 Stage  6d20(9+9+20+3+9+3)=53 6d20(18+6+2+2+7+3)=38 d20=13 3d8(8+7+5)+15=35

Guild Mages #1 and #2 lose their spells as the Priest of Alemi activates the Anti-Magic Field. Their robes also immediately change color from the colors those of the guild to jet black. They wear silver based broaches with an obsidian dragon visage on them. Roll knowledge check to recognize them (distance and your own preoccupation serve as large distractions). Guard #1 is visibly shaken as he hears the cry of the Acolyte of Alemi #1 - as if realizing what he is doing. He refrains from taking his attack of opportunity and cannot bring himself to finish off the priest of good. You notice his equipment brandishes symbols of freedom and justice. He bellows loudly, "The Council is wrong! I will not!" He sees who they really are and decides to attack mage #1 with whom he is closed hitting him twice. High Priest #1 loses his spell as the Anti-Magic Field is activated...

High Priest #2 shakes his head in disgust as the crazed giant appears he's going to break into his blade barrier - clearly not intending to drop it even for him to finish the job. (No way he's letting the likes of the Storm Dragons anywhere near him - even with one such as A'tath fighting on his side (at least he supposed to be...) Seeing the tide turning with the new combatant entering the field, he casts Summon Monster 9 and another - even greater air elemental (an elder) appears. It stands/floats in front of the other powerful - but clearly lesser air elemental (Hey, Caeroldra has power too!).

Guards #4 and #5 sneer at Gareth and attack as one of them exclaims "That is exactly the point fool! They are good! Marteaus is the true way. He will reward us for our actions this day! May chaos reign!" They attack the warrior 4 times - hitting nothing but air (Displacement). They begin shouting obscenities at him as their frustration grows. A'tath, knowing that he cannot get to either dragon this round without risking serious injury or even death, turns his wrath on those who are keeping him from fulfilling his mission. He convinces his sword to let him focus elsewhere for now. He spats as Cantos calls him coward. Hearing the perverse language of the vile guards - and their loyalty to one so chaotic - he executes a whirlwind attack maneuver and hits guards 4&5 and Gareth with one swipe (Whirlwind Attack Feat). He cuts both guards literally in half. Their surprised faces near the ground and see their legs still standing. The blade appears to pass straight through Gareth, not hurting him at all (Displaced - missed roll). The huge being glares at Cantos. "I was battling for my beliefs CENTURIES before you were born - and I will be battling for them centuries after you are nothing but DUST! Can't you understand that dragons wish to CONTROL US ALL! Whether they call themselves good, evil, or anything else! Freedom, I say! Choose freedom!" He turns back toward Sturtavent and is clearly going to attempt to cut him down through the barrier - seems the sword is using his fervor to make him forget common sense and attack anyway. Mage #3 responds with a magic missile on Addinein (16 DMG). He curses since he held his lightning bolt because guards 4&5 were in his path - and he might hit A'tath. Now it looks like he would've done better blasting them all! Two of the three guards who were commanded by Tericus to freeze resist the command and close with Gareth, both attacking once. The first hits for 12 DMG, the second should've hit, but catches nothing but air.

Guards 8,10,12,13&15 miss 1 attack. 11 gets 2. Guard 8,12,&15 score hits on Jus (35 DMG). All three on Tericus miss. Guard #14 tries to keep his feet from the buckling dais and dodge the blades (Nice knowing you...).

The Bad Guys? - Round 2 Grounds  15d6(2+5+5+4+4+5+2+6+3+6+6+4+6+4+3)=65 15d6(1+6+1+4+5+1+1+5+1+2+5+2+2+5+2)=43 15d6(6+3+4+2+2+6+6+5+6+6+1+1+4+4+2)=58 15d6(2+4+6+4+5+1+4+5+6+6+1+4+3+6+5)=62 15d6(6+1+5+4+2+6+5+3+2+5+2+4+6+4+3)=58 24d20(19+8+18+12+1+15+9+7+13+19+4+17+4+5+20+5+9+2+18+17
Friday January 11th, 2002 5:49:39 PM

Guard #3 is also shaken up by the Priest of Alemi he's attacking. His curse hit the soldier more soundly than any physical attack he could have delivered. His resolve hardens and instead of attacking the priest he turns, leaps back on the dais, and closes with Mage #1 - fighting his fear of the elementals. Flying HOL Priests 1&2 Blast the Priest of Alemi #2 with flamestrikes yet again hitting him for 108 DMG. HOL Priest #3 hits Alemi Priest #3 with a flame strike as does #4 for 120 DMG. Priest #5 blasts Nonam with a flamestrike for 58 DMG (sv for 1/2). Priest #2 continues to be shredded by the giant eagle.

The Elite City guard really cuts into the freedom fighters. The archer gets cut down too. Only one mage remains who is not closed on by the guard.

Observations - Round 2
Friday January 11th, 2002 6:10:25 PM

You notice that several of the city guard are clad differently - some normal, some in black. Looks like those closest to the council area are loyal to Martaeus. Several on the fringes were merely trying to support the Council and keep order - not really liking politics. And then others that are in rebellion against the Council. Those swordsmen who are engaging the city guard are in chain or plate with burgundy capes. They are clasped with gold dragon pendants (not Gold Dragon pendants... no association). There are others with green capes with silver dragon pendants as well. Not all the mages are who they appear to be. Some on the stage are clearly not from the guild but some are. Some in the crowd are clearly from the guild, others not. There is strife in all directions you look. One of the most troubling things is to see the Hands of Love act in such an overtly evil way. Minions of Marteaus you could at least understand, but her?

Near the end of the round you notice three shimmering gates beginning to form around the dais. You also hear the thrumming of soldiers in unified step run marching toward your location. Hard to say how much time you really have or how many there are. With the huge wall of force down many more have joined the fray. Allies mostly with more on the way. But will there be enough...?

Love Ain't in the Air No More!

Round #3 - Good Guys Attack  d20+25=31 d20=13
Saturday January 12th, 2002 10:59:21 PM

With the Anti-magic Field from Alemi Priest #1, part of the blade barrier disappears as he enters the field. The noose around Oratai seems to have faltered as well for the dragon reaches out and grabs the High Priest of Caeroldra by the arm and pulls the noose from around her neck. She then throws him like a rag doll directly through the blade barrier of High Priest #2 over the head of Sturtavent, straight into Tericus' blade barrier and then crashing with a thud into the iron wall - which is currently being shredded. Amazingly the priest somehow survives the blades and also holds onto consciousness - but not by much. She begins to tranform into her dragon shape and the dais there begins to buckle and collapse under her huge weight. Her priest is held safely in her claw but he barely clings to life as he releases his antimagic field and casts Dimensional Anchor on HOL High Priest #2 - hitting him squarely. The blades begin to cut into the silver dragon - but the priest is held above the blades. Guards #1 and #3 wail on Mage #1 who promptly dies.

The great eagle continues to attack HOL Priest #2. With the city guard closing on him, good mage #1 winks out (Improved Invis.) and takes to the air. Mage #2 blasts 10 huge magic missiles into HOL High Priest #2. The priest nearly falters with the attack. Good Mage #3 also winks out and takes to the air leaving swordsman #12 with 5 simulataneous opponents. This one is clearly superior and takes out 4 opponents in his round of attacks (killed 1 with first attack, killed #2 with cleave attack, killed #3 with 2nd attack and great cleave attack, and killed #4 with great cleave attack. Hit #5 with great cleave attack and 3rd attack.) The crowd from behind the huge wall of force overwhelm the positions of the remainder of the city guard, killing all of them. They rush toward the stage and begin to line up casting mages and clerics, and line up archers too. Alemi Priest #2 rushes to the edge of the dais and cries out "May the allies of Alemi renew their strength and be healed!". A dome of white energy leaves him and engulfs the entire area - probably 90 feet across. Everyone of the good guys are completely healed (Cast Mass Heal - Oratai, Priest #1, #2, and #3, Guards #1 and #3 are all healed)! Alemi Priest #3 calls down fire on HOL Priest #1 and he falls from the sky. The major air elemental disappears - apparently by the command of the air elemental elder.

Tericus  d20+4=20 d20=6 11d6(1+4+1+2+4+4+1+6+5+6+1)=35
Sunday January 13th, 2002 9:36:30 AM

Not bothered too much by the noise (made save) and able to dodge the flying pieces of iron (made dex check), Tericus casts flame strike, positioning it so that it catches both guard 10 and 13 (and missing himself) for 35 pts of damage.

Addinein  d20+13=20 d20+8=13
Monday January 14th, 2002 3:54:52 AM

Addinein continues his attack on the mage. He keeps his eyes open for ways that he can help Oratai and Stuardevent.

Cantos
Monday January 14th, 2002 2:02:56 PM

Cantos prepares for the blow as it must come and removes the noose from the High Lord Mayor's neck. All the while taunting A'Tath, "Better to help and live with an honorable dragon than help one such as you."

Jus (AC 25; AC 32 to North; HP 17)  d20=18 d20=2 d20=15 d20+18=24
Monday January 14th, 2002 2:03:33 PM

The noise is increadible, beating in his head as much as it is beating on the wall. Somehow, Jus is able to ignore the pain of the noise and continue his fight [made DC 15 with 18]. He keeps part of his attention on the wall, staying out of the path of the shrapnel [made dx check with a 2].

As he fights, he begins to notice the signets on the opposition [knowledge check roll of 15 against unknown DC].

"Don't you vermin have other things to do," Jus yells to his foes as they hit him again, visibly hurting him. He quick tosses a "thank you" over his shoulder to Qualde. Without her help last round, he would've been dead.

Hating to do something defensive, but knowing it's his best chance to survive, Jus casts Shield defensively [made Concentration check with 24, so no attacks of opportunity].

Jus steps back up a few steps towards Qualde [less than 5', so no attacks of opportunity :)], ensuring that Jus is between these attackers and Qualde. Jus also swings his Shield so that it defends him from the three foes to his north [+7 to AC to 50% of Jus; currently facing North to be betwixt his current 3 opponents].

Qualde (Hasted)  d20+12=19 d20+11=19 d20+17=25 12d6(5+6+4+5+4+4+6+1+1+2+5+3)=46 d20+12=29 d8+12=15
Monday January 14th, 2002 4:13:52 PM

Despite her delicate elven hearing, Qualde is not much bothered by the racket of wall-beating blades (Fort=19), and she ducks behind some of her surrounding soldiers to avoid the worst of the shrapnel (Reflex=19).

With room to breath, and Jus' partial cover, Qualde makes an irrevocable choice: she calls a Flame Strike down on the High Priest holding Sturtavent, casting defensively (Concentration=25) to avoid interference from the surrounding guards. (46hp damage to HP#2 -- assuming Caeroldra will blast one of her own at the behest of another.)

She then steps to Jus' most open (unShielded) side and strikes the nearest of the guards a blow with her morningstar (Sorry, can't read guard#'s. Power Attack 5, hit AC 29 for 15 hp damage.)

Gareth  d20+27=37 d20+22=40 d20+17=36 d20+27=31 d20+27=33 d10+16=22 d10+16=21 d10+16=26
Monday January 14th, 2002 6:05:31 PM

The warrior presses his attack in reasonably impressive fashion hitting him all 3 times but misses the opportunity to drive the blade any deeper (missed 2 criticals - bleck!). He keeps his other 2 opponents engaged but focuses on A'tath. He joins Cantos in his taunting "You will not win in this attempt. The dragons will SURVIVE!". (Hit AC 37,40,36 for 22+21+26=69 DMG).

Nonam  5d4(3+3+4+2+2)+5=19
Monday January 14th, 2002 6:25:35 PM

The wild mage speaks one word and 5 magic missiles spring from his fingers and High Priest #2 for 19 DMG (Quickened Magic Missile). He leaps up onto the stage turning invisible as he goes (contingency spell). He runs between A'tath and Oratai to get behind Sturtavent and the high priest.

Guards #10 and #13 char and die with the additional fire (Jus already zapped them) and shrapnell damage. Jus casts his shield and protects Qualde's position. Qualde calls down fire from her god on High Priest. The priest is burned with the magic fire - but so is Qualde. Qualde takes 1/2 damage as high priest (save for 1/4) - who somehow is still standing. Addinien misses both attacks. Cantos steps into the blade barrier and begins attempting to grab the magic rope out of the hands of the High Priest - who is resisting. Cantos much beat a strength check of 22 to succeed in ripping it out of his hands. Cantos also takes 69 points damage from the whirling blade barrier (save for 1/2). Gareth hits A'tath 3 more times with significant results - but it is clear this one can take a whole lot more. A'tath simply laughs at Gareth and Cantos' remarks - completely confident.

(Nonam saved from the flame strike last round)

Seeing the huge silver dragon rise up before him is too much for A'tath to take. With a battle roar he launches himself into her striking her 4 times opening up 4 foot wounds on her and driving yet deeper into her torso (168 DMG). Gareth gets an attack of opportunity. She roars in agony as these attacks plus the blade barrier still flies around her (74 DMG). But it's clear that even such a powerful spell will have a much more difficult time than with the wall of iron. Black Mage #2 winks out, seeing he won't survive in the presence of such an opponent. The Air Elemental Elder hits Oratai as well striking her with the fury of a powerful whirlwind (60 DMG). HOL Priest #2,3,4,and 5 cast flame strikes at the dragon (129 DMG). HOL High Priest #2 Casts an improved Mass Heal and the dome of healing extends 120 feet across. You look in horror as all the damage you have delivered evaporates as if it never happend (all opponents in the area are now healed: Mage #2, HOL High Priest #2, 2 guards on Gareth, HOL Priest #2,3,4, Guild Mage #3). Figuring he can contribute one more round without dieing, Mage #3 Casts a Lightning Bolt that hits priest of Alemi #1 and Oratai (31 DMG). HOL High Priest #1 fails his save and and Dex check and takes 42 more damage. He dies as the blades overwhelm his magical protection and strength - a HUGE loss for them. Guard #14 dies from the whirling blades. Guild Mages #4 and 5 hit Oratai over the quickly shredding iron wall with 20 Maximized Magic missiles (10 each) for 100 DMG. Guard #11 misses Tericus, Guard #9 snaps out of Tericus' command to freeze and attacks Qualde twice, missing both times. All 3 guards on Jus miss miserably - perhaps noticing one or two of the minor distractions around the area... (Rolled poorly). The eagle (good guy) continues to claw at HOL Priest #2 with reckless abandon - oblivious to the fact that he's just been healed of all his wounds.

Guards begin to pour out of the 3 new gates. There's no telling how many there are. The footfalls of the approaching battalion sound like thunder. It's obvious there is an overwhelming number in route. Mage #1 casts a wall of force over the left gate. Mage #2 casts one over the center gate, and mage #3 casts on in turn over the right gate. They nod to each other in satifaction as their handiwork gives the heros have a small reprieve. The guards who made it out of the gates are taken on by the growing crowd of rebels. They stand no chance at all. No other allies or foes try to make the wooden dais as it is quickly being demolished with a huge silver dragon thrashing about on it.

Jus notices that the guards and mages in black are clearly followers of Martaeus. This with the silver dragons are not known to you - but appear to be associated with either Alemi or perhaps simply silver dragons - or maybe even some sort of elite secret guard for Oratai herself. The ones wearing gold clasps appear to be similar but associated with gold dragons in a similar fashion. Many mages in the audience are clearly from the guild, perhaps 2 on the stage are from there too. You could see a civil war brewing with the level of the people on both sides of this this. Perhaps even leading to the destruction of the city. It is also clear you are running out of time. Even though you have many allies, the Council was prepared for this. It's only a matter time before they wear you down.

Round #4 begins... Good luck. I'll send out the map tonight.

Jus (AC 32 to North; HP 17)  d20+16=24 d20+11=27 d20+13=14 d10+3=5 d10+3=5 d6=6 d20+13=22 d20+10=13 d20+10=17

Amazed that he still lives, Jus flips his Swords off his back with amazing speed [Quick Draw]. Even outside, his blade glows an errie blue, ready to whatever evil is around [Sun Sword, +4 vs. Evil. If these guards are not evil, take 3 off of all rolled to-hits and damage].

Jus judges which guard seems to be causing him most damage (hoping to take him out before he hits Jus). Moving into action, Jus puts all of his energy into his attack.

Unfortunately, his proximity to the platform's edge throws his rhythm off, spoiling his last attack [fumble; reroll with hero point]. At the last moment, he's able to compensate and lunge up at the gaurd once again. (hit AC:24/27/1[fumble]/22[hero] for Dam:5/5/6).

In his haste, he almost gets hit by the flying shrapnel. Again, he's able to miraculously avoid getting hit at the last moment [burn another hero point :( ]

Nonam
Tuesday January 15th, 2002 1:50:55 AM

Nonam focuses on the priest holding Sturtavent; perhaps he can get rid of the pesky priest and his Blades at the same time. Working through the spell, Nonam casts Polymorph Other on the priest shaping him into a Large Mule (save vs. Fortitude DC of 21).

If successful, the priest's new body will be class Large, putting him amidst the blade barrier. If or when this kills him, his active spells will drop. As an added bonus, he won't be able to cast spells since he won't have hands or humanlike speech. Let's hope he rolls low.

Tericus
Tuesday January 15th, 2002 3:11:38 AM

Seeing that Cantos has fallen, Tericus casts spell immunity on himself (immune to blade barrier spells) and rushes over to his fallen friend's side. Once he gets there he checks for vital signs to see if he's still alive.

Cantos
Tuesday January 15th, 2002 8:28:14 AM

Cantos lays on the ground, still bleeding but no longer breathing.

Now in her true form, it quickly becomes clear why dragons are not really the ones you want to fight... All but one of the flame strikes simply fizzle when they strike her for no damage. The blade barrier from High Priest #1 disappears as the caster died last round. Oratai screams HEAL! (Quickened spell - free action) Everyone on the stage (Good guys) are now at full hit points - except Cantos who is now at 1 (With his save of 20 [hero point], he took 1/2 damage that put him at -1). Every adversary to Oratai in the area must save vs. Fear or fall to the ground in terror (partial action), allies gain +1 to all attacks and damage. She drops Alemi Priest #1 near Sturtavent (Partial action) and then bites down on the air elemental elder capturing it in her huge maw. She pivots and as she does her tail slaps HOL Priest #3 through the air toward the opposite side of the stage. With her huge clawed arm she backhands A'tath and launches all 900 pounds of him off the stage as easily as he had done to Gareth earlier. As she finishes her pivot she blasts the impaled elemental elder out of her maw with a breath weapon - which incidentally is pointed directly at HOL Priest #4. HOL Priest #2 is also caught in the icy blast and also receives from the dragon a left hook - which he notices... The breath weapon also partially hits the eagle - which falls to the ground dead. Alemi Priest #3 says a short prayer to Alemi for allowing such a magnificent creature to aid his minions in their time of need. He also calls down a flame strike on #2 - who dies and falls from the sky as well. Before this one hits the ground he is teleported away.

Guard #11 gets a free attack on Tericus as he bolts for Cantos. Hits him for 28 DMG.

Alemi Priest #1 casts yet another antimagic field and tackles HOL High Priest #2 (who resisted Nonam's polymorph spell). The blade barrier disappears around him and almost immediately the noose around Sturtavent's neck fails too. As the priests fall over in a heap the noose is wrested from the High Priests hands becuase Sturtavent doesn't even bend as the line goes taught. He smiles and pulls the noose from his neck - and begins to get quite large - significanly larger than even Oratai. The dais - what is left of it - collapses. Everyone standing on it must make a Dex check DC 20 to keep their feet, DC 15 they lose their footing, less than DC 15 take 1d6 damage and lose footing. Guards #1 & #3 (came over to our side), stumble and fall to the ground with the collapse of the dais. They are clearly enraged that an alleged procurer of good such as the HOL High Priest would have anything to do with something like this. They begin to crawl toward him.

Alemi Priests #2 and #3 cheer in triumph as both dragons escape their bonds, caring nothing for their own well-being. Priest #2 also calls down fire on A'tath causing him some damage, but not phasing him in the least - especially with yet another dragon in sight. The large crowd of allies finishes off the remaining opponents and begins to organize. They prepare defenses in front of all 3 gates, and begin using debris, carts, chairs, etc. to blockade the street and set up a defense against the oncoming army.

The warrior keeps his feet as the dais collapses (27 DC). He attacks the 2 guards on him with his 3 attacks (Hit AC 32,28,37,[46] for 17+21+18+[18]=74 DMG. Cleave Attack - if applicable - Hit AC 43 for 22 DMG).

Tuesday January 15th, 2002 4:33:09 PM

With the collapse of the dais - and all support removed from one side, the 20' tall wall of iron tilts and falls toward the dragons and crashes to the ground. It crushes guards 11,15, and 12 and gore splatters all over Jus and Qualde - who do well to miss being crushed too. The rest of the guards cower before the huge dragons, soil their pants like novice fighters, drop their weapons and curl into a fetal position. Two of them saved against one of the frightful presence abilities so they are not quite as pitiful looking... All other adversaries in the dais area save except for HOL priest #5. Apparently there is magic involved in their resistance. A'tath is not affected. The approaching army begins to round the corner into the square but keeps coming. Either they are fighting it or they are simply not close enough to be affected by the dragons' persence. All 3 gates explode as the walls of force holding them collapse. Guards adorned in black begin pouring through. The allies in front of the dais begin to understand that they are probably about to be slaughtered by overwhelming numbers. Many of them begin to try to escape into other alleys and paths leaving the square. The elemental elder is damaged by the attack of Oratai but still stands strong. HOL Priest #4 look bad after the breath attack, but is still in it. Jus whacks one of the guards, but he is promptly squashed by the falling wall. Gareth takes out one of his opponents and severely injures the other only to see him fall to the ground. Addinien whacks Guild Mage #3 and Qualde's opponent fall to the ground.

The Bad Guys - Round 4  d20+25=41 20d6(6+4+5+5+2+1+6+2+2+6+2+1+1+2+5+3+4+3+3+4)=67 2d20(1+10)=11 d20+40=60 d20+40=42 d12+50=60 d12+50=62 25d6(2+3+3+4+3+5+6+6+4+6+3+1+2+2+2+1+2+6+5+3+1+3+5+4+4)=86 2d20(19+4)=23 2d20(9+8)=17 20d6(6+3+5+6+1+2+4+1+6+1+6+1+2+3+5+3+4+2+3+2)=
Tuesday January 15th, 2002 5:27:49 PM

Seeing that he is clearly outmatched, outflanked, and unable to teleport (dimensional anchor), HOL High Priest #2 orders the elemental elder to pick him up and port him to a safer vantage point. As he moves away he casts another blade barrier around the head of Sturtavent which does 67 DMG. His original blade barrier around the dragon does 73 more. HOL Priests 3 and 4 call down fire on Sturtavent both of which simply fizzle out when they hit him. HOL Priest #5 falls to the ground as he releases his fly spell in panic. He also lies like a dead man begging the dragons not to hurt him. A'tath races back up to the stage and hits Sturtavent with one two-handed attack. He yells some type of command word as does his sword. Upon impact a bolt of energy erupts into him. Also, the gash he puts into the dragon is painful indeed as it sinks deeper into the Great Wyrm more than it should (290 DMG total from critical attack times 2 plus spell). It is clear that A'tath is one to be taken seriously - even by 2 dragons at once. Guild Mages #4 and 5 both cast improved lightning bolts into the two dragons and Alemi Priest #2. The first one hits all 3 targets, the second hits only Oratai and the priest. It seems to pass though Sturtavent harmlessly doing 33 and then 29 DMG. Mage #3 winks out and is seen no more. The 2 visible mages then move directly away from the dais area as do flying priests #4 and #3. Most of the guards pouring through the gates simply stop in complete fear. This severely hinders the flow of soldiers out of the gates. The approaching army has halted some distance from the square - but not out of range of the archers. You hear sombody command "LOOSE!". Not less than 200 arrows rain onto the stage area. 39 of them hitting targets. Three hit Jus but he evades damage from all 3, Qualde is struck by 2, one of which sticks her for 8 DMG, 3 hit Gareth for 24 DMG, 5 bounce off A'tath, 18 hit Sturtavent and 10 stick for 80 DMG, 8 hit Oratai and 3 stick for 24 DMG. Those behind the dragons are blocked from the assault. It is also clear that many more archers are preparing their weapons as they get into position.

Jus (AC 32 towards Archers; HP 72)  8d6(1+6+2+3+4+3+5+2)=26
Tuesday January 15th, 2002 7:07:52 PM

"Everyone! We need to leave! Get to Nonam!" Jus yells, hoping Nonam can get them out. Before heading over them himself, Jus casts Fireball at the two Guild Mages (at the same time wondering why they don't flee, too) [26 damage, save for half].

Jus heads towards Nonam, leaving the groveling guards that were in the efficient process of killing him. Jus has the presence of mind to swing his Shield to help defend himself from the Archers (free action) and grab the ropes that were around the dragons.

Tericus (immune to blade barrier)  d20+1=20 d8+11=19
Wednesday January 16th, 2002 4:01:06 AM

Somehow keeping his footing while the stage collapses, Tericus yells out "Where is Noonan! I don't see him anywhere!!" Then seeing that although wounds were healed, new ones appeared on his friends, Tericus casts healing circle, healing 19 pts back to all his friends that are within 20' ft of him (Cantos, Addinein, Nonam, Tericus, and Sturdavent.) Then he yells to the dragons, "You can't stay here!! Fly away!! We'll handle this!"

[Nonam is about 6 feet from Tericus' position directly on the other side of Cantos. To the left when looking at the map.]

[but isn't Noonan invisible?]

[Sam, Sam - it's NONAM, not NOONAN! - love, Kim]

The warrior strikes savagely at A'tath, giving him all he has. He hits him with his first attack, his sword merely bounces off on his second try, and he really sticks him good on the third one. (Hit AC 36,37,[37] for 21+18+24=63 DMG). He decides to continue fighting their primary foe until one of the dragons tells him to do different, figuring they proabably have a better plan than he.

Nonam  10d6(2+5+6+4+1+2+2+5+2+6)=35 12d6(3+1+4+1+2+1+1+2+6+6+5+5)=37
Thursday January 17th, 2002 1:23:20 AM

"Behind the Gold Dragon!" Nonam yells out, letting everyone know where he stands (invisibility ended when he casts his last spell). "Cantos," Nonam thinks through the Telepathic link, "are you still with us?"

Nonam moves as needed to get a clear shot around Sturtavent, using the mind link to ask Oratai to move a little. "You said A'tath is tough, Sturtavent," Nonam thinks shortly before he shoots a Quickened Fireball to burst behind A'tath [far enough back not to hit Gareth; 35 hp damage, Reflex save for half].

"We can leave or we can fight," Nonam continues his thoughts towards the dragons, "with the army approaching...." Nonam pauses as he gets another opportunity and throws a Cone of Cold at A'tath [37 points of damage, Reflex save for half]. [Note: Nonam will position the spells to get A'tath and attempt to get the new bad-guys coming out of the gates].

"With the army approaching, we don't stand much chance dragonless. What's your plans?"

Cantos
Thursday January 17th, 2002 8:11:20 AM

Cantos groans as he stands up, "That's the last time I cross a blade barrier without thinking about it first. What are we going to do now? And I could use a bit of healing if anyone wouldn't mind." In the telepathic link: "Yes Nonam I am here -- a bit worse for the wear, but I am here."

The Good Guys, Round 5  d20+50=64
Thursday January 17th, 2002 12:08:53 PM

With his transformation complete, Sturtavent is prepared to strike. Oratai was awesome, but it is clear the gold dragon is the one the enemy should be most concerned with. Even though injured severely in the preceding round it is clear that he is not slowed at all. He blasts the Air Elemental and HOL High Priest #2 with his breath weapon. A jet of flame engulfs the pair and the heat is so intense that those on the ground below must shield their faces or be burned. Any of those soldiers hearty enough to keep their feet when they came through the gates now fall to the ground, overwhelmed with the creature. When the air clears you see that the priest, who is still alive, has fallen and lays sprawled on the ground and the elemental is simply gone. Not missing a beat, the great wyrm strikes A'tath with a left backhand once again sending him flying from the stage. This time though he roars "CLENCH!" and a glowing hand grabs the huge creature and holds him fast. He then roars "SUPPRESS!" and the blade barriers disappear instantly. Nonam feels his telepathic link disappear and Cantos and Tericus feel their immunity to blade barriers dissipate. He then turns to the party and says "No time! Climb on or we are all lost! Your teleport will not work!"

Oratai focuses her attention on the gate nearest to her. She lets loose a cone of energy from her gaping maw that covers the guards that have made it through the gate, but also travels into the gate evoking screams of terror on the other side. No guards move at all to move away from the location or try to gain access to the battlefield from the other side of it. The silver giant makes a single motion and another heal spell goes off healing Sturtavent, herself, all members of the party. With yet a word an anti-magic field strikes the gate in front of the stage and it collapses into nothing. She orders the 2 guards that sided with her to join the swordsmen in the crowd, and then orders her priests to her. She then bellows to those allies around the area, "Escape! We are free and will now cover for you as long as we can. Your deeds this day will not go unrewarded!"

Mage #3 casts a quickened, maximized, improved fireball that explodes around guild mages 4&5. They immediately teleport out. He also casts another spell. It looks like a double Melf's acid arrow. One strikes flying HOL priest #3 and one hits #4. But upon impact, both of them fall from the sky as if their fly spells simply quit working. Both of them pop out when they gain their feet. Mage #1 blasts HOL High Priest #2 with a fireball, and he stops moving. It is unclear if he is dead or not.

The swordsmen in the now quickly dispersing crowd each touch one or more of their fallen comrades and immediately they wink out and are gone. The mages do the same thing. The rest run for it leaving the guards in black standing in a stupor. It will take at least 3 rounds for all of them to get out of the square.

In case anybody ever reads back through this, a quickened, maximized fireball would be a 10th level spell, and there is no such thing as an improved fireball. -jk

The Bad Guys, Round 5  4d100(78+10+85+65)=238 108d20(11+14+15+10+15+13+18+9+12+1+3+5+15+13+3+5+5+12+18+13+19+6+9+6+12+1+17+13+20+18+3+18+20+20+11+6+17+15+9+17+15+11+19+14+9+18+13+9+7+9+11+10+10+17+4+9+1+10+18+17+10+8+14+14+13+14+4+18+16+17+4+13+10+20+8+8+3+13+8+5+16+12+9+16+12
Thursday January 17th, 2002 12:33:35 PM

A'tath roars at the dragons in a rage. He fights the spell - and is making progress. He will probably break free in 2 rounds.

As the tide of guards is now stemmed in all but one gate - which is also not very effective as most every guard pushing through the gate is immediately assaulted by the mere presence of the 2 huge beasts - you see the archer contingent now fully set up about 200 feet from the front of the rubble that used to be a dais. In front of them is a line af black clad warriors who simply hold their position. There are also mages in the lineup who now begin to cast. You hear two captains yell "LOOSE!". This time, 400 arrows come raining down on the stage. It is clear that this is probably the majority of the archers in the Plateau City Army. 238 of the deadly missiles are actually shot well enough to hit the group. 108 of them hit Sturtavent but only 18 of them penetrate. 71 hit Oratai but 33 of them actually penetrate her armored hide. 3 stick into priest #1, 3 in priest #2, 4 in priest #3, 2 in Nonam, 1 in Cantos, 3 in Tericus, 1 in Addinien, 1 in Qualde, 1 in Jus, and 3 in Gareth. Since the first contingent of archers set up last round they get off 2 vollies this round. Another 200 come in at you (Each party takes one more arrow). The second group of 200 will get 2 shots next round. All the black clad guards left groveling in fear on the stage grovel no more...

One of the mages casts and straight at you fly 4 - 2' spheres of fire. When they get to the parties location they explode and the group sees that outside a small dome around them is engulfed in a raging ball of fire. The antimagic field seems to have worked. Nonam and Jus recognize it as a Meteor Swarm spell. The other mage sees the results and holds his spell. He begins to casts another one instead.

[Each arrow does 8 DMG]

A Storm is in the Air Instead

"I'm leavin' on a jet plane" - or - "It's time for me to fly" ... Round 6, DM DEH
Thursday January 17th, 2002 12:53:20 PM

Unless you intend to take on the archers and their company, there are no other opponents in the area not neutralized. With the last group of attacks, it is becoming clear that you are running out of time. You hear the thunder of marching boots once again in the distance. Even 2 great dragons and a group like the Storm Dragons will not be able to defeat such a trained group of warriors and mages. A'tath is almost free as well. Amazing that someone could be so strong as to break the hold of magic constructed by a great master of magic such as Bigby. It is unclear if our group of heros could take him out even if he was alone! Additional gates begin to appear farther back from the dais area. They are coming for you. The dragons allow all to climb on that will do so. The priests of Alemi get on Oratai. The wood from the stage outside the antimagic zone is burning pretty good now as it has been hit with magic flames from all the spells. It creeps toward your position. Your turn...

Jus
Thursday January 17th, 2002 1:24:59 PM

Jus shoves the ropes into his pack and climbs onto the Gold Dragon. Letting out a whoop of joy, Jus exclaims, "I wish my brothers could see me now!"

Nonam
Thursday January 17th, 2002 1:36:46 PM

Nonam climbs onto Sturdavent, readying a counterspell for anything that comes from the army [Dispel Magic if the actual counterspell is not memorized].

Qualde  d20+12=25
Thursday January 17th, 2002 1:47:57 PM

Singed by the backlash of her own spell (saved for 1/4 damage with 25), and overwhelmed by what she sees as her goddess' betrayal, Qualde is oblivious to the arrows that strike her. Numbly, she follows Jus, clambering up Sturtavent's side with none of her usual grace. The drow finds a seat, but makes no move to hold on or otherwise secure herself for flight.

Cantos
Thursday January 17th, 2002 2:11:42 PM

Cantos scrambles up on the Gold Dragon's back behind Qualde. Seeing that she is not really ready Cantos wedges himself firmly in and then readies to steady the drow if she seems to slip."Hold on Qualde you'll fall if you are not watching."

Gareth
Thursday January 17th, 2002 4:41:58 PM

Once everyone else is aboard a dragon, the warrior tries to use his winged boots to get a perch up on Oratai but dicovers they are not working. He uses the old-fashioned method and climbs. "So much for being dragons..." he mutters as he looks out over the archers from his new vantage point.

Addinein
Thursday January 17th, 2002 4:53:17 PM

Addinein takes one final look around at the carnage. Taking his time, he makes sure that all the allies are quickly climbing upon the dragons' back. Should anyone be falling behind, Addinein will have expedition retreat ready.

The Good Guys, Round 6
Thursday January 17th, 2002 8:42:45 PM

As everyone gets ready to ride, the three priests of Alemi pray. Whatever they did - if anything - is not apparent. Oratai says gently, "Time to go..." Sturtavent holds still as he cannot breathe this round, he cannot cast due to the antimagic field, and there is nobody close enough to attack. He whispers so only those on his back can hear. "Prepare for aerial combat. I doubt we get out of here so easily."

As the archers see what you're up to both captains give their commands. A total of 800 arrows rain down on your position this time, 360 of them shot well enough to have a chance at hitting you. About 200 of them strike the dragons, but the remainder home in on those climbing on board. 17 of them tear into Sturtavent who winces but does not move. 14 imbed themselves into Oratai and she too does not move, allowing those who intend to climb on get situated. 8 of them strike Priest #1, 5 hit #2, 5 hit #3, Cantos takes 9 arrows for 32 DMG, 5 hit Gareth for 21 DMG, Tericus takes 9 arrows for 46 DMG, 2 arrows hit Jus for 15 DMG (Note, when climbs on Sturtavent his shield spell stops working), 7 arrows drive into Nonam for 33 DMG, Qualde get struck by 10 arrows for 58 DMG, and Addinien suffers hits from 5 arrows for 25 DMG.

The mages are holding, apparently waiting for the dragons to leave the antimagic field.

Here's your coat, there's the door, what's your hurry?  d100=55
Thursday January 17th, 2002 10:23:22 PM

The vast majority of allies in the crowd area are gone. The others will be out of sight before the army closes in. More guards and archers begin to flank your positions as they pour out of the newly open gates, they will be ready to fire next round. There are probably 600 soldiers in or near the square and there are many more coming.

With a look and a nod both Sturtavent and Oratai leap into the air. They both - as if in unison - roar with a sound that shakes the ground. About half the archers lower their bows in awe. You do well to remember to hang on youselves. As they clear the antimagic zone you can tell that magic leaves the dragons as they both cast spells. Then they split, one moving east and one moving west over the city. In the square you can hear both A'tath and his sword cursing and screaming as they are unable to stop the escape. Coming so close to his target and not succeeding in the kill will not be forgotten any time soon.

As they clear the buildings at the side of the square the mages cast - one at Sturtavent and one at Oratai. Again they each cast Meteor Swarm. The balls of flame reach the edge of the buildings at each side of the square and abruptly stop - and explode. Looks like the dragons cast walls of force out of the direct line of sight of the mages so they wouldn't see them and adjust. Many archers are engulfed in flame and the buildings explode into a raging fire (what's left of them after the initial explosion). As you quickly exit the area you cannot really tell how many soldiers were wounded or killed but surely the number was quite large. The dragons gain altitude and you see there is pursuit from several summoned flying monsters and flying adventurers of various kinds. After only a little time though the dragons quickly leave them behind since not many beings can keep up with a dragon who is pressing for speed. Especially when the pursuit is not whole-hearted. Really now, who wants to catch an ancient huge dragon carrying able adventurers and face one on one combat - much less two on one?!?

The dragons turn south and head straight over the edge of the first plateau. After the city is far from sight the exhausted dragons join and take turns leading to save energy. The adventurers look over their mighty mounts and see that much blood is still gushing from their many wounds. In a short time though the priests have them patched up looking good as new. The dragons even have time to cast healing on their passengers. After about an hour of flying straight south, the dragons do something interesting. They each cast 2 spells. The first incantation turns them invisible and the second creates a duplicate image of them continuing to fly South as if to the sea. There is almost no time lag between the 2 spells. Sturtavent tells you the illusions will last long after they are seen heading out over the South Harbor into the sea. You also hear them mutter enchantments that the mages know is protection from scrying.

It's then that you turn west a while and then north. You skirt the 2nd plateau and pass far west of the 2nd Plateau lifts at South Dangdrum. You continue to head north and back east a bit into the monster preserve area. As Lake Wellogy is seen on the horizon you drop out of the sky into an area of hills and canyons. After circling a couple of times to be sure it's safe, the dragons land lightly in a well covered area. After you dismount and turn visible again, you see that you have actually passed through an elaborate illusion of a canyon wall. There stands a large castle built into the real canyon wall. The entrance is not elaborate but after you hear the unrepeatble complex passwords spoken in maybe two dozen unknown languages it's clear that not many could approch even if they stumbled upon it.

The place is not terribly large but it houses everyone comforatbly. The dragons see to the closing of the entrance, go to areas specifically designed for each of them, and collapse. The priests show you to a rest area you can use, assuring everyone that they are completely safe. They join you on closeby beds and quickly fall asleep too.

Tericus
Friday January 18th, 2002 9:34:05 AM

Basically looking like a pincushion, Tericus cast heal on himself and offers to heal anyone else before he goes to sleep.

The Morning After...
Friday January 18th, 2002 11:25:32 AM

You wake up and prepare your things like you've done hundreds of times before. The priests create meals for everyone - except the dragons of course. Even though it seems like you should relax a few days after such an event that you've come out of, there is simply no time. Once everybody is prepared to leave, Sturtavent and Oratai both join you in their human form. Sturtavent speaks "My dear friends! We owe you our lives. Not a debt to be taken lightly. We will speak of that later though. We have called an event to which you cannot come I'm afraid - a council of dragons. All the Dragon groups of the old consortium and most every major dragon in the entire realm are coming together to discuss the storm that is brewing for us. This includes dragons of ALL colors! You, on the other hand, must return to Floating City. I strongly suspect that you will be declared criminals by the Plateau City council so I would recommend you not go there right now. I also fear you are not yet accepted by many of the existing dragon groups and given the circumstances we cannot afford unneeded strife, which is why you cannot come with us. We'll deal with that soon enough - but not now. Once again you have proven yourselves true to your calling. You are becoming quite a powerful force indeed! We will be in touch soon, Storm Dragons."

Oratai and Sturtavent bid you farewell and then teleport away. The priests tell you they are staying for a time. As per your directions from the Overlord, you have a report to deliver...

Nonam
Friday January 18th, 2002 6:47:16 PM

Nonam enters, ready to go. If it weren't for his unusually good spirits, he'd look exhausted. "Anyone have one of those rest potions left? I found the library and spent most of the night studying. Very nice; very rewarding."

Jus
Friday January 18th, 2002 6:52:15 PM

Jus returns, also ready to go. He tells everyone of his morning: he woke up early, even for an elf, to try to find someone [preferably one of the dragons] to help him work on combining his magic with his fighting. He thought of several good ideas and will try to work them out when he gets a chance.

Gareth
Friday January 18th, 2002 7:30:35 PM

The warrior shakes the cobwebs out and joins the others. After the dragons leave and the others assemble he says, "Well, I guess our time as dragons was short-lived. At least Sturtavent still likes us. I suppose we'll see what the Overlord thinks. We at least owe him a report. Perhaps we can hang out there in the Big Float for awhile. Nonam, you ready?" He waits to be teleported away.

Cantos
Friday January 18th, 2002 8:14:25 PM

Cantos wakes up refreshed and goes looking for the others, "Well so much for being heroes in Plateau City for awhile," Cantos chuckles. "I guess we better head to the Big Float and turn in our report."

Going Home
Saturday January 19th, 2002 10:47:50 AM

Nonam gets the group back to the Floating City without incident. It doesn't seem like many people in the city are speaking about the events in Plateau City yet, probably because there hasn't been enough time yet. When you get to the Overlord you find him waiting for you. After you deliver your report he broods over the information awhile. Finally he looks up and says "Sounds to me like you won't be going back to Plateau City any time soon. For the record, the Plateau City Council has declared you outlaws. I've already been contacted by them with demands to turn you over - something I summarily rejected. You, of course, are welcome to stay here indefinitely. Having you here will help in our defense with all the stuff going on. I would suggest you get some rest and prepare yourselves. If the dragons are meeting it means trouble is brewing. I'm sure you will be involved. And with the evil tack the Plateau City Council is taking, I would venture to guess you'll have visitors in the form of bounty hunters.". After a few more minutes of discussion, you depart for your home. A place it looks like you will be seeing more of.

[It's been fun guys. I think JK will be taking up the reigns again next week. If not I may do a couple more days. Hope you enjoyed]

Qualde
Saturday January 19th, 2002 2:19:36 PM

Qualde parts from the group after their meeting with the Overlord. She returns home hours later, battered and bloodied as if from another battle. She seems frenzied as she seeks out her friends, and her eyes blaze red with anger. "Caeroldra is become strange to me," she declares, "and her Church, wrong. No more will I serve!" The drow tears her holy symbol from her brow and dashes it to the floor, then slams out of the room.

Over the next little while, she can be found in spare moments either meditating alone, or at Alemi's temple.

I'm back, but I've got a little catching up to do. Hopefully, I'll get the dm post done before noon, and then I'll get back into the habit of posting in the am. Thanks David and John.

The Realignment

DMJK
Monday January 21st, 2002 9:32:07 AM

A few days pass...

One night you dream...

The Dark One offers a truce and a meeting to work out differences. Alemi accepted. Both can bring one god with them. Alemi asks Caeroldra to come to the meeting. Marteaus comes alone...

The group wakes and is summoned to appear before the Overlord. As they take the now familiar ride to the Overlord's palace you sense a different sort of feeling in the air. It seems related to the dream. Something momentous has happened. Qualde has the sinking feeling that she knows what it is.

To punctuate the thought, a crazed man with wild unkempt hair wearing sack cloth leaps in front of your carriage leaps forward with his arms stretched above his head. As he runs forward he's screaming, "It's the END. THE END! IT'S COMING! ARE YOU READY!! I KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT! I HAVE SEEN YOUR END!" As he moves in front of the carriage you lose sight of the scene, but you hear the carriage driver scream out, "Get out of the way!" Inside the carriage, you lurch forward as he tries to suddenly slow the horses and hit the breaks. It doesn't work, and the carriage goes starts to careen and topple over.

CRASH!!!

...is everyone ok? Seems to be. The carriage is laying on its side, and the party is laying on top of each other on the other side which is on the bottom. Who's sword is that poking you in the ribs? At least it's still in the sheath.

Nonam
Monday January 21st, 2002 10:24:33 AM

The wizard groans, "Is everybody alright?" Then he starts trying to right himself and starts working on getting out of the carriage.

Gareth
Monday January 21st, 2002 11:21:25 AM

The warrior grumbles as he climbs out. "Why can't things just go like they're supposed to...". Once outside he surveys the damage after making sure the driver is OK, all the while glaring at the crazed man. He decides to let somebody else deal with him.

Qualde
Monday January 21st, 2002 12:19:59 PM

The drow untangles herself from her friends and searches among the horses for the madman, to give him what aid she can.

Jus
Monday January 21st, 2002 8:47:41 PM

Jus pulls himself out and checks on the driver's condition. Jus does, however, keep one eye on Qualde, worried that the gods' war will damage her sanity and wanting to be nearby if she needs help.

Cantos
Monday January 21st, 2002 9:09:08 PM

Cantos springs from the carrige and looks at the wreck. Helping to pull his comrades out of the wreck, keeping an eye out for the crazy guy to speak with him.

Addinein
Tuesday January 22nd, 2002 2:37:05 AM

"With a little luck, we'll pull through." Addinein chuckles as his witticism.

Tericus
Tuesday January 22nd, 2002 9:07:53 AM

"What a way to start the day," Tericus mutters as he gets out of the carriage.

DM JK
Tuesday January 22nd, 2002 9:10:32 AM

(sorry if this seems rough, but Jerry made me change my scene.)

The group survives the carriage crash, and no one seems the worse for wear. Everyone gets out of the wreck and has a look about, but the crazed man is nowhere to be seen.

Suddenly you feel an overwhelming desire to put on a mask and go to the Arena. You notice other people are already putting on masks and heading that way through the streets. Your sense of duty overwhelms the compulsion, and you press on to the Overlord's palace.

By the time you arrive, the streets are nearly empty. Half the guards are gone. There seems to be a huge mob surrounding the place, but they are trying to get into the arena. You push through the crowd and go into the palace. A servant takes you to the Overlord. He's standing at a balcony that overlooks the arena. He turns and faces you all. He's wearing a mask, "Whatever it is, hasn't started yet. There are masks over there for you if you feel the need to put one on." You do feel the need.

Masked, you all join the Overlord and wait for whatever is going to happen. The wait isn't long.

Suddenly a titanic presence arrives at the center of the arena. There is a blinding light, but you feel peace wash over you. The light subsides and an old man with a look of grandfatherly love stands below you in the center of the arena. You know it must be Alemi.

Soon a second giant figure appears. You've all seen him before. The man with the moustache and the wounding rapier that you saw in Plateau City when all this began. It must be Marteaus. His power has grown immeasurably since that time. The power he radiates seems almost equal to Alemi's.

Though you all witnessed it firsthand, the rest seems like someone else's memory:

With the two standing there, it was like love and hate and a whole storm of emotions all at once. Caeroldra showed up only moments later, and Alemi asked the Dark Lord who his second was for the meeting. Marteaus laughed and said Caeroldra, he grabbed her hand and pulled her to his side and gave her a lewd kiss. The holy goddess smashed her holy symbol to the ground and pulled out a new one of a two-headed snake kissing itself with passion. The crowd went crazy and either booed or cheered along.

Marteaus then demanded equal status with Alemi, claiming that the evil and ignoble people of The Wold have no one to represent them. Alemi, standing alone yet radiating power and hope, sadly shook his head and refused. Marteaus laughed and said that the Old One could not hope to stand against him and Caeroldra and that he was going to end it all now. Alemi prepared himself to die and for battle when a fourth god shows up: The One. She went and stood by Caeroldra and caller her mother.

Marteaus laughed, 'Now you have no hope. It is 3 to 1.' Alemi says that nothing that happens here is binding since Marteaus broke the rules of the truce. Who knows why that would matter if Alemi were dead, but Marteaus took the challenge seriously and said he did not break the rules. He did not invite The One. She came her own accord.

Then, and this is where things really get interesting, The One says that she did not come to stand by Marteaus' side and crossed over to stand beside Alemi. Some of you wept in relief, but Alemi just smiled and said "Welcome stepdaughter." Alemi knelt down and picked up the holy symbol of the God of Love and offered it to The One. She removed her holy symbol of a half-mask and put on the new holy symbol, that is Caeroldra's old holy symbol. By this point the crowd was just watching in open mouthed fascination. Many started to remove their masks.

Marteaus scowled and threatened that he cannot be stopped and that all the secrets of The Gods of Wold are now his in Caeroldra. He vowed to undo the Gods of Wold, and Alemi just shook his head in sadness. He seemed sort of like a father who didn't know how to deal with a wayward son. He says that there is still time for Marteaus to forget this awful scheme and repent. Without repentance, judgment will come upon Marteaus soon.

Not moved in the slightest Marteaus spat in Alemi's face and cried out, "This is the beginning of the end for The Gods of Wold! Let it begin." You thought they were going to fight it out right then and there, but instead they all disappeared.

It all happened moments ago. Right before your eyes, but it seems like it was a dream. The Overlord is still gripping the rail of his balcony, and the crowd below is starting to move out.

Gareth
Tuesday January 22nd, 2002 11:13:48 AM

As he watches the spectacle unfold, the warrior just gapes. "Looks like we should have executed those Hands of Love clerics we encountered on the road. How could such a thing as this happen?!?". About the time he begins to curse and disparrage Caeroldra, he realizes Qualde is with them, and holds his tongue wondering all the while what is going to happen to her - and them.

Qualde
Tuesday January 22nd, 2002 3:02:24 PM

Qualde hisses, her eyes locked on the space where her former goddess had so recently stood. "No, Gareth," she says, her smokey voice heavy with dark emotions. "Not ours to punish before crime is committed. Had to give freedom to choose. Some must have noticed -- the wrong, the sickness in She who was -- Arrgh!" Screaming, the drow brings both fists crashing down on the railing in front of her. Beads of moisture roll down her skin from beneath the mask.

Addinein
Tuesday January 22nd, 2002 3:46:20 PM

Concern for his sister washes over his face as he sees her suffer with the consequences of another God's decisions. Keeping his wisdom to himself, he just hopes that luck doesn't have a change of mind, also.

Cantos
Tuesday January 22nd, 2002 9:17:48 PM

Cantos wisely keeps his mouth shut as Qualde and the others vent their emotions.

Tericus
Wednesday January 23rd, 2002 9:02:42 AM

Placing the symbol of his goddess, a flute, to his lips, Tericus plays a soft tune to remind himself that he is still blessed by his goddess.

Nonam
Wednesday January 23rd, 2002 9:06:49 AM

After watching the scene below, Nonam exclaims, "You know, not believing in the gods is starting to get harder."

The Overlord
Wednesday January 23rd, 2002 9:52:44 AM

The Overlord thinks for a moment then he goes to the door and calls for the Captain of the City Guard, "Traxis, take a large group of men and head to the Diamond Cathedral. Unless I miss my guess, there will be fighting there between those that decide to serve this new Caeroldra and those that wish to change allegiance to the One. I want you to back this goddess known as the One. See to it." The captain snaps his heels together and salutes, "It will be as you say." Then he turns and exits.

The Overlord turns back to the Storm Dragons, "The independence of Floating City has been an unoffical fact for some weeks now. Now that the Council has sided with this A'tath and ousted Sturtevent and the High Priest of Alemi, I can no longer tolerate any sort of connection with Plateau City. I am declaring full independence today. Plateau City can maintain complete control over the Upper Plateaus, but their dominion no longer extends over the first Plateau. Everything North of Jessage on the First Plateau shall be in the dominion of the Floating Kingdom. Already Jessage and the towns around the lake have sided with me. Any other towns of the First Plateau and even the areas around Dragon Bay can chose their allegiance. Though I hope they will side with us. This is why I summoned you all here, so that you would know about it first hand and to get your reactions.

Gareth
Wednesday January 23rd, 2002 11:00:34 AM

The warrior listens to the proclaimation without surprise. "I was wondering when you would do that. It doesn't surprise me at all. For the record," he says, looking to the others for confirmation, "we formally support the Floating Kingdom in whatever function you see fit until this Martaeus thing is finalized. I am wondering how many will flee the upper plateaus and come here? And I wonder how many cities on the upper plateaus will try and side with the Floating Kingdom? As far as the Council goes, it seemed to me that the decision about Sturtavent was far from unanimous. There were three of the seven Council members that seemed to not agree at all with the decision but seemed powerless to stop it. Perhaps you or Sturtavent should stay in touch with them? Also, I feel as if we should be involved in any effort within Plateau City to restore order and goodness. If the opportunity arises we should participate. And one other thing: What should we do with priests of Caeroldra we find? Seems like we should prevent them from their religion here. Instructions?"

Jus
Wednesday January 23rd, 2002 7:34:29 PM

Jus listens, amazed that the gods are sharing this tribulation with the Wold; one would expect they'd fight in the heavens, not on earth. This fight could surely topple nations... then a thought occurs to Jus.

"Overlord," Jus asks, "are there routes still open for mail? Can mail still be sent and received from the city? Do you know how the rest of the continent fairs?" A look of intense worry crosses Jus' face, as he twists his ring on his finger.

Tericus
Thursday January 24th, 2002 5:56:45 AM

"Well," Tericus says, "I'm with Gareth. This is really our home, so how could we not defend it?"

Nonam
Thursday January 24th, 2002 9:11:19 AM

Listening to Gareth, "Even if some on the Council don't agree, they are no longer the ones in power. It would be nice to simply hole up here, but someone needs to save Plateau City. That said, I too agree. Floating City is my primary concern."

The Overlord
Thursday January 24th, 2002 9:19:06 AM

"It makes me glad to hear all of you. By all means, I agree that something must someday be done about Plateau City, but I want to help those around Floating City first. We, of course, already have spies in Plateau, but I will enlist a few more. These will keep me abreast of the situation, and I will keep you informed."

"Jus, I understand your concerns. The mail routes are still open, but I could have something delivered for you more quickly somewhere if you desire it. Just because we're declaring independence doesn't mean that we don't want to maintain relations with the old Kingdom of New Elenna. Hopefully, we can maintain trade relations. A large portion of the city's exports go to Plateau City. Hopefully, this will continue, but I'm afraid that those fools on the Council will start a war over all of this."

"Qualde and Addinein, I value your input here as well. I know that Plateau City helped bring your family to the surface. How do you imagine that they will stand in this matter? The people of Floating City will welcome friendly relations and trade with open arms. I would invite your family to set up a trade consulate and embassy here as well."

Gareth
Thursday January 24th, 2002 1:36:46 PM

Taking his queue from Jus, the warrior says "I have not heard word from my family in the Cinnimon Valley. I would greatly appreciate you sending a courier with a letter from me there and perhaps returning with word of their condition.".

Cantos
Thursday January 24th, 2002 2:06:43 PM

Cantos looks around at the others, "I have no home, truly I have been roaming around so long that where ever I lay my head is home. But if you say this is home, then this is where I shall stand with each of you."

Jus
Thursday January 24th, 2002 7:11:19 PM

Gaining control of his strong emotions, Jus agrees with Cantos, "I would be proud to stand with you, Overlord. But as Gareth has said," Jus lets some of his concern show, "I am worried what has happened to my family in this conflagration."

Addinein
Friday January 25th, 2002 4:45:34 AM

Looking at the Overlord. "It is hard to say at this point. I think we could get away with just saying that we're here represent to the best of our abilities." Not wanting to say too much, he looks to his sister for some guidance.

Tericus
Friday January 25th, 2002 8:12:25 AM

"Well, the elves did give us the friendship daggers. Surely that must carry some weight if they are forced to choose sides."

Nonam
Friday January 25th, 2002 9:30:43 AM

Nonam responds dryly to Tericus, "...but after we received them, Gareth killed one."

The Overlord
Friday January 25th, 2002 9:34:08 AM

"I have no pressing business for you to attend, so by all means, check on your families. Now if there are no further questions, I do have a few other things to take care of this morning. Oh one other thing, at your leisure, you might venture down and see the Underlord. Nothing pressing, but you should probably be familiar with both halves of government here."

The Overlord waits for any further questions or for the group to depart.

Gareth
Friday January 25th, 2002 11:03:01 AM

The warrior nods. "My thanks for your support and acceptance. We'll do what we can for the kingdom - and we'll go see the Underlord as well. Is the 'rumor' I heard true? Is he part or all dragon? Not that it matters to me, just that it would help us if a sticky situation comes up.".

Overlord
Friday January 25th, 2002 2:56:30 PM

"No, that's silly. The Underlord is not a dragon."

Cantos
Friday January 25th, 2002 3:27:13 PM

Cantos bows to the Overlord and looks at his friends, "Should we go to the Underlord now?"

Jus
Saturday January 26th, 2002 6:44:29 PM

Jus buries his feelings again, realizing that big things are happening and his group is in the middle of it.

"Agreed, Cantos," Jus says. "No time like the present."

As everyone prepares, Jus goes over to Qualde. "You okay? Anything I can do... to help?" Jus cautiously asks.

Nonam says, "Well then, what are we standing around here for?"

DM JK
Monday January 28th, 2002 7:59:39 AM

The group leaves the Overlord's palace. The sounds of a small battle can be heard in the direction of the Diamond Midway. No doubt the priests of Caeroldra and the One are still fighting. The Underramp that will take you down in the lower levels where you can meet the overlord stands just ahead. Not having been asked to participate in the fight you head down...

Little out of the ordinary happens until you make it down to the merchant level. There, a band of scantily clad men and women run through the street passing out candy. The leader runs up and gives Cantos a not-so-chaste kiss and presses some sort of green and white candy into his hand. She whispers in his ear, "Think of me when you eat it." She bites his ear before she runs off. She eats a few of the candies herself as she goes. Her friends pass out similar candies to the rest of the group.

Tericus
Monday January 28th, 2002 9:09:09 AM

Pocketing the candy, Tericus mutters, "Thanks."

Gareth
Monday January 28th, 2002 10:42:07 AM

The warrior looks over the groups carefully to determine their affiliation. Would they be Caeroldra - or the One groupies? He decides to ask them as they mingle, "So what group are YOU with?"

Addinein
Monday January 28th, 2002 11:38:04 AM

Addinein carefully looks over the candy that was handed to him. Putting an amused look on his face, he pockets the confection for later.

Jus
Monday January 28th, 2002 1:50:17 PM

Wondering what has become of Qualde, and if she'll be okay, Jus is suddenly awakened from his ruminations by the revelers.

Jus laughs at the sight. The Wold is indeed going crazy. "Nonam, we should save one of these for Onrad. Not telling him how we came across them, of course."

Qualde
Monday January 28th, 2002 3:49:52 PM

Not much in the mood for frivolity, Qualde discards the candy. She feels an irrational urge to lash out at the celebrants. To distract herself, she catches up to Jus. "Jus, I am sorry. Your concern is kind. By silence I try to -- contain my anger. Is not deserved by you or these others."

The drow seeks out her brother's gaze. "Should like to visit Breyt'tar, or send word. Domi and Caeroldra were central to them. House will be in chaos, vulnerable to Cult influence."

Nonam
Monday January 28th, 2002 6:16:00 PM

Nonam shrugs off the girl that approaches him and he starts to eat the candy. Just before he does, he decides to cast 'detect poison' on it. Then, assuming that it's not poisonous, he pops it in his mouth.

DM JK
Tuesday January 29th, 2002 8:52:05 AM

Nonam feels warm and happy. Everyone else chooses not to eat. Gareth isn't able to get an answer to his yells, so soon the merry band is off down the street. Right away you spy a familiar face, it's the crazed prophet from this morning. When he sees you he starts walking right toward shouting once more, "THE END! IT'S COMING! ARE YOU READY!! I KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT! I HAVE SEEN YOUR END!" He blindly walks out into the street, and SMACK gets run down by a carriage.

His body pops up and down a few times and bends in strange directions as it goes under the horses' hooves. Then he passes under one of the sets of wheels. The heavy wooden wheels roll right over his back and press his body down into the mud. The carriage driver immediately stops and jumps out shouting, "That crazy @$$*, he ran right in front of me."

Qualde's quick search reveals that the accident has provoked a crowd of onlookers. Before she can learn much else, Nonam gets in the way.

Tericus rushes to the man's side. The crazed prophet, or whatever he is wheezes, "I didn't see this coming. I was there at the end. You were at the end too, but you failed. And we were doomed." Tericus and Cantos get there in time to hear the last words, but the man falls back dead before Tericus has a chance to heal him.

Jus notices that the candy smells good, and the colors sure are bright.

"Makes no sense to me. If he was at the end, and he just died, that means the end is either right now or he was wrong. Since it looks like we're still breathing, I'd say he was wrong. Poor guy. Looks like something outside him forced him to have visions that drove him crazy. I have no ideas here. Anyone else?"

Jus
Wednesday January 30th, 2002 1:57:28 PM

Jus wonders about the old man and heads over to check him out (pocketing the candy once again -- especially after Nonam's odd behaviour). Gingerly, and with respect, Jus looks for any sign on the man; wondering if he may be the cleric of a fallen god.

"It is a little spooky," Jus admits, "but I wouldn't worry about it too much. We've seen Paladins go crazy from the shaken heavens; we can expect the same from others.

Placing a hand on the man's head, Jus says a quick prayer to whoever his god may be that the man has a safe and proud journey to his god's side.

Cantos
Wednesday January 30th, 2002 9:55:46 PM

Cantos gently picks up the man and carries him like a baby to the nearest temple, correction one that is not a Cult god temple, and asks a priest to ensure he is buried properly. Then he rejoins The Storm Dragons and looks at Tericus, "I don't know what he meant but I would sure like to find out."

Qualde
Thursday January 31st, 2002 2:49:02 AM

Qualde raises her brows as she briefly studies the shaven-headed mage. "Nonam," she begins cautiously, "You have opinion about this?" The drow's gesture encompasses the accident scene and the unfortunate madman. "Have guess or proposal of action?" She puts a friendly hand on his arm, ready to restrain Nonam if he tries to run in front of a passing carriage.

Nonam
Thursday January 31st, 2002 8:46:29 AM

DM JK
Thursday January 31st, 2002 9:01:06 AM

From his time in the city, Cantos knows that the Merchant Level houses a shrine to Domi, Caeroldra, and Gargul. Domi and Caeroldra seem like lost bets. Fortunately, the shrine to Gargul was devoted to Kevintar, the avatar that stands for death and opposed to Marteaus. Plus it's right across the street.

The priests of Gargul see Cantos coming and rush out to help him with his burden. In exchange for the body, they give Cantos a pin fashioned like an eye, it's a holy symbol of Gargul. One stays to speak, "Sir Dragon, Remember Gargul in your prayers. His strength is needed to defeat the upstart Marteaus, but the people of Wold have turned their backs on him. So he doesn't listen. Remember him, and he will remember us."

Once Cantos carries the body away, the carriage driver quips, "You all saw it. It wasn't my fault." Then he takes off. Since the show seems to be over, the crowd starts to break apart.

Nonam definitely isn't acting like himself.

Torn between concern and amusement, Qualde tugs Nonam into motion. "Then tell me on road to Underlord, Nonam. I wonder: if limit scope of opinion so, does limit Woldview as well?

"Tericus," she continues in husky voice, "If one is enchanted or cursed, you can remove?"

Nonam
Friday February 1st, 2002 7:30:06 AM

Nonam looks lovingly at Qualde and says in very good undercommon, "What do you mean by limit Woldview? Your common is usually top notch, better than Gareth's even, but I don't quite know what you mean this time?"

DM JK
Friday February 1st, 2002 7:41:18 AM

Tericus detects no magic in the candy. He guesses that it must contain some sort of herb or other natural ingredient like alcohol that wouldn't trigger a detect poison spell but nonetheless affects the mind. Nonam will have to let it wear off or find something that counteracts the candy. Coffee perhaps?

Cantos returns, holy symbol of Gargul in his pocket. Cantos' bardic knowledge leads him to believe that Nonam has eaten what is commonly referred to as "passion weed." It should wear off in a day or two, maybe less since the dose was small.

Once again, one of Gareth's questions fails to get a response.

Other than doting on Qualde, Nonam seems relatively normal.

Jus falls to the back of the party, cautiously watching Nonam as they head to the Underlord. In the back of the mind, he tries to figure out how the old man could be with the Storms at the end time if he already died. It would be *very* weird if they came across him again.

The Assassin

DM JK
Monday February 4th, 2002 9:07:47 AM

Somehow, the journey down to see the Underlord takes nearly 2 weeks. It seemed that some sort of distraction always popped up and caught your attention, but you've finally made it. In the interim Nonam's passion weed finally wore off. It even wore off of Gareth after Jus mixed his candy into the big warrior's food.

Now you're back on your way down to see the Underlord with a sense of deja vu. It's around the noon hour, and Jus has his spells in action just like before.

As you journey down, you can't help but notice the stench of the lower levels. The trash level is the worst of all. Placed below the gates that enter the city, it's not often that you make it down here. The streets are crowded, dark, and unfamiliar. It's been a long time since any of you have had to come down here. Was the last time when the group met Onrad? That was quite the meeting.

The Undercity of the Underlord dominates the landscape as you walk down the ramp and survey the surroundings. When this was a Teucri city, the Undercity was no doubt a beautiful citadel. The white limestone walls probably gleamed in the artifical light from the ceiling. Now the walls have been coated with years of soot from the fireplaces and ovens of the denizens of the trash level. Their filth has covered everything. It even seems to have deposited itself on the ceiling here. The magical light doesn't penetrate through the grime, and the artificial sky seems hazier than it does on the other levels.

Instantly you gain access to the Undercity. The Underlord's dwelling is beautiful on the inside. If only there weren't so many windows to constantly remind you of where you are. You are shown to the Underlord's chamber. A sixth sense warning of danger immediately tickles your nerves as you approach the door. Where's the guard? Why is it so quiet?

The next few moments seem to pass in slow motion. You quickly enter the room. There's the guard that should have been outside. Slumped over leaning against the wall. No blood. Probably had his neck broken. His sword is still in its scabbard. His placement doesn't look natural. No doubt he was killed in the hall and dragged inside.

Where's the Underlord? There. The form in the center of the floor. Blood is still flowing from a slit throat. The cut is so deep that the head nearly came off. The Underlord's sword lies on the floor a few feet away. There is no blood on the blade. Rumors rate the Underlord as a top notch swordsman. Clearly, the assassin was skilled.

A window stands open at the far side of the room. Your guide through the Undercity starts screaming for the guards, and the world seems to speed back up.

The warrior races to the open window in hopes of seeing the fleeing assassin (Spot DC 17). He leaps from the window and begins to scan the area (activates winged boots - I'm assuming we're not on the ground level?). Over his shoulder he calls "Yes Tericus, I'd say raising one of the two leaders of the city we serve would be a good idea. As I recall, the sooner it happens after death the easier it is. Better hurry."

Cantos
Monday February 4th, 2002 7:57:43 PM

Cantos looks around to see if anyone else is in the room and then help Tericus with his resurrection spell if needed.

Jus
Tuesday February 5th, 2002 1:41:21 AM

Jus nods towards Tericus as he runs over to the Underlord. Casting a spell, Jus tries to Detect Poison, makeing sure Tericus' ressurection isn't in vain.

After telling Tericus the results, Jus looks around, ensuring nobody is hiding within the room -- especially up above and in the shadows.

Qualde
Tuesday February 5th, 2002 4:18:52 AM

After spending two weeks consulting with former clerics of Domi in Alemi's temple, Qualde is almost glad to be back in the thick of secular life. "Poison, paranoia, and political murder," she mutters. "Feels just like home."

The drow stands in the doorway with her back to one side of the jam, to control traffic into and out of the chamber. "You," she tells the screaming guide. "They hear, and they come. Teresalia's man casts very important ritual, will take time. Only most important may enter. You must stay calm, tell me which to allow. Do you understand? Know you of legal reason not to resurrect Underlord?"

Nonam
Tuesday February 5th, 2002 9:31:57 AM

Seeing things under control in the room, Nonam casts fly and leaps out the window with Gareth. Hoping two sets of eyes will find the culprit faster.

DM JK
Tuesday February 5th, 2002 10:00:12 AM

Gareth and Nonam quickly spot a likely culprit. A woman with a greatsword strapped to her back is running across a lower rooftop. Running very quickly, she reaches the edge and leaps down, she is momentarily out of the line of sight. Though she shouldn't be hard to catch for the fliers.

Tericus starts setting up for the resurrection spell and knows that it will take several minutes. Jus and Cantos find no one else in the room. A quick peek out the window reveals a balcony overhanging a lower roof. It's made in such a way that it would allow a quick exit though it would be hard to climb up. No doubt the assassin is gone. Jus detects no poison, and Cantos helps Tericus as he can.

Addinein studies the scene. Judging from the wound marks, he surmises that the assassin used the fighting style of the drow blademaster, Denrae'il Mer'ax. Remembering a little bit of drow history, he knows that Denrae'il was once considered the best blademaster in Menzo. Then one of his female students slew him in combat. The traitor used the sword Sa'ariss (he wonders what that translates to in common, Ice Venom?) that was stolen from the drow bladesmith Mu'ra a few centuries before. Most drow wondered if theif and traitor were one in the same. Closer inspection, Addinein notices that some of the blood in the wound is frozen. If Denrae'il's killer is the assassin, then Gareth will probably need help.

Qualde stands in the door ready to direct traffic. She hears the guards running to the alarm call and gets ready to direct them. When they round the corner and spot Qualde at the door to the Underlord's chamber, one of them shouts, "DROW!" 5 guards immediately start charging toward the door with swords in hand. She just has time to notice a fat, sweaty priest puffing along behind them.

Nonam
Tuesday February 5th, 2002 12:27:26 PM

Nonam tries using that Knight of the Realm ring to communicate what he's seeing to everyone else, "Looks like one woman with a sword. She's on the roof trying to get away."

Nonam tries to tail the fleeing suspect. Once he reestablishes visibility and is close enough, he'll cast a Polymorph Other spell and attempt to turn her into a slug.

As the warrior hurtles through the air toward his quarry, he activates his invisibility ring in hopes of catching the swordswoman unaware. If he is able to close with the woman this round, he will tackle her, using his body as a weapon to smash her to the ground or wall - whichever is expedient. He tries to get almost directly above her and do a nose dive (i.e. the best angle to maximize damage) - not worried about hurting himself in the process (Dex Check DC 21, Hit AC 32 plus any modifiers for surprise, DMG would be 1d6 for every 10' distance fallen - or equivalent speed). Once done he will grapple her down and prevent her from moving (Str Check DC 23).

NOTE: Didn't know if we were in melee yet so I placed multiple actions - Gareth will proceed as far as possible along the chosen path.

'Figures,' Jus thinks as he sees the guards rushing towards the doors, 'just when I decide not to memorize Grease.'

Jus stands between the Underlord and the guards, hoping to get their attention before they enter the room. He bellows as loud and intimidating as he can (Intimidation roll of 5; hero point reroll of 17), "Halt! We are the Storm Dragons!" Seeing the priest, Jus points his finger at the portly fellow and commands him, "You! Help Tericus resurrect the Underlord!"

"The rest of you!" Jus yells at the guards, "An assassin has fled through that window," he says pointing to the open glass. "Two of our Dragons are in pursuit; lend them aid."

If the guards persist in their desire to fight, Jus vents some frustration in a growl and casts Solid Fog across the doorway, between the guards and Qualde.

Qualde
Wednesday February 6th, 2002 12:46:07 AM

"I am Qualde, friend of Storm Dragons!" she calls to the approaching guards. Qualde groans in frustration. What a time for racial prejudice to rear its head! "You, guide. These people are legitimate?" Standing athwart the threshold, she awaits confirmation from him before letting any pass. Should they attack her, she defends herself and the chamber on full defensive.

The stand off (DM JK)
Wednesday February 6th, 2002 9:32:33 AM

The guards arrive at the room, swords are still out, and they're almost ready to attack. They are clearly confused by the situation. One of them mutters something about storm dragons having drow members. The party's guide wheezes a bit and croaks out that Qualde is telling the truth, but it sounds like the same sort of thing that he would say if he was a hostage. The leader seems willing to go along with the idea for now, but he clearly radiates hate. The situation balances on the edge of a knife.

The puffing priest pushes his way in to help Tericus to leave the sword slingers to figure things out. Tericus sees a symbol of Alemi about the man's neck. He watches Tericus a moment and says, "I can do a true resurrection and save your spell, brother. Caring for the Underlord is one of the reasons that I am here."

Nonam and Gareth trail the suspect and Nonam spots her first, he casts his polymorph while flying after her. In that same instant Gareth activates his ring of invisibility. Nonam's spell puts the group into combat.

Nonam's spell has no effect on the running woman, but she obviously feels the magic that is cast. She draws her sword out in a fluid movement and leaps from the ground. She spins, sees Nonam, and flies straight for him.

Already in the process of diving, Gareth reaches her first and attacks, becoming visible in the process. She easily dodges, as if she knew he were there, and pushes on toward Nonam. Gareth carries on a little past her. He'll have to fly back up to get her (having to move more than 5 feet, so next round can do standard attack, not full).

(We have aerial combat 2 rounds out from the Underlord's window. The combatants are roughly 200 feet out and in clear view of those inside the room.)

Jus glances over the guards, determining which is the leader. "You," he says, pointing at the one in charge. "What's your Name?" This given, he tells the man that it is likely that another attempt will be made on the Underlord's life once it returns.

"Send for more men and guard the entrances to this room," Jus tells him.

"Qualde, Addinien, Cantos," he continues, "Cantos and one of you two, go catch up to Gareth and Nonam; they may need our help. If wanted, I'll cast fly upon one of you. But go quickly."

Heading back to the Underlord, Jus asks those around him, "Some spells allow you to see what has happened in a room. Priest," Jus asks as he draws the Underlord's priest of Alemi away from Tericus and the body, "do you have such a spell?"

With the recent events, Jus doesn't trust this priest as what he claims to be. He doesn't trust any of the guards, for that matter.

Puffy the Priest
Wednesday February 6th, 2002 3:59:35 PM

The priest looks at Jus and pants a bit, "I know of no divine spells that would reveal what has happened. There is the legend lore spell, but it would take longer to cast than the resurrection. It wasn't really intended for such purpose. Speak with dead might be appropriate, but I failed to pray for it this morning. I didn't expect it to come up. You have my oath that we are hear to help. If you submit to swearing an oath to Alemi that you are the Storm Dragons and here to help the Underlord, then the guards will stop this... this irritation."

Tericus
Thursday February 7th, 2002 7:45:18 AM

After seeing the priest's holy symbol, Tericus stops casting his spell, knowing that he can always cast it again if things go wrong. Walking up to Cantos, Tericus says, "I can't cast fly, but this is almost just as good." Then he casts air walk on Cantos (you can move through air as if you were walking normally, it will last 110 minutes). Then Tericus walks over to Jus and tells the priest, "If you're going to save him, do it now or I'll go back and do it myself."

Since Tericus is casting airwalk on Cantos, Jus is able to cast fly on Qualde. Cantos casts haste and starts running toward the aerial battle.
Hasted and having wasted no time, Cantos will reach the fight in the next round. Since she waited to take the oath, it will take Qualde 2 rounds.
It dawns on everyone that the woman in Addinein's story was a drow. The woman outside clearly is not. She looks like an elf. Nonam and Gareth are close enough to see that she's extraordinarily beautiful and has purple eyes that are filled with an intense hatred.
Nonam's detect magic vision goes wild as she approaches him. There's nothing about the woman that isn't magical.

In the air, the woman apparently takes full damage from both of Nonam's spells. Her hair stands on end as the lightning courses through her body (miss reflex w/21), and the magic missiles leave small burn marks.
Gareth lands his blow as well, but he can tell it doesn't do full damage. His experienced eye then notices the glittering skin produced by a stoneskin.

Despite having taken a good bit of injury, the woman laughs gleefully, "You have improved since we last met. It's a pity you were oathbreakers. You could have been great, but you stole my gifts. Now you will feed the worms if there is anything left!" She seems quite unreasonable toward the end of her speech.

She flows through the air gracefully in a powerful whirlwind attack. Her first attack strikes Nonam a critical blow (41[41]). The second strikes Gareth with a critical blow as well. (39[31]82). The damage is immense, she puts a level of powewr into the blow that greatly exceeds her size. She metes out 54 (20,24,+5 each I forgot) points of blade damage to Nonam and 48 to Gareth (21,17,+5 ea). The frost blade adds insult to injury giving Nonam an extra 6 pts damage and Gareth an extra 2.

The fearsome opponent then does something that boggles Nonam's mind, a thin green ray shoots from her bare forehead and strikes Gareth's sword. Nonam recognizes a quickened disintegrate, somehting that should be impossible. Gareth just feels his sword wanting to come apart.

(sword fort DC 22 or it's gone, it takes 15 dmg if it saves, enough to render it useless now, though possibly it would be repairable)
(saves for magic items are 2 + 1/2 the caster level rounded down. Telekinesis is the sword's greatest power which takes a 9th lvl caster. I'll give the benefit of the doubt and bump the caster level up by 5 to 14. That would give a +9 to the fort save. Common hitpoints for a greatsword = 10. +2 for the plus on the weapon.)

(He makes a 25, sufficient to beat spells of a 14th lvl caster)

The sword shudders and goes "quiet" in his hands, but somehow holds together (Fort DC 25).
The warrior exclaims both verbally and into the ring of dragons "Tarentellia the deep drake!" as he recognizes the only opponent who was purple, gave them gifts, and to whom they took an oath (Int DC 15). "We did not break our oath, nor did we steal your gifts - and I can prove it! Why have you come and done this thing? What benefit would such a thing do for one such as you?!". The warrior moves backwards hoping the dragon will talk instead of fight. He also sheathes his damaged sword and simultaneously draws his short sword - not wanting to stand in front of one so powerful unarmed, though he's pretty sure it won't make much difference. He parries if she attacks (AC 36 - reroll 1 w/ hero point).

Not knowing what ensues outside since he doesn't wear the communication ring, Jus tells the others, "Go catch up to the two trouble makers and see if you can do anything."

Jus tells Qualde to head out, now that she has the fly spell cast on her, she needs to use it. "I'll take the oath," which Jus does as the others leave. "In Alemi's good name I declare we are the Storm Dragons," Jus says looking at the guards, memorizing each face. "Guard his life should it return -- to your death."

"Come Tericus," Jus says as he heads towards the window, grabbing a chair or anything that will help him reach the sill. Once up, he looks for the rest of the party, determining if there is a foot route between here and there.

"Well, friend," Jus says, putting a hand on Tericus' shoulder. "I have dimension door I can use on myself to get there in an instant. But unless you have something similar, we need to travel together."

Reacting to Gareth's news, Addinein talks to through the ring. "What other news is there of this drake? Did the city do something the Drake not want? Is the Underlord a dragon, or a perceived dragon, maybe?"

"I will stay, in order to help here, and be 'hostage', if these need it. I can also relay any news for the priest that is here, and maybe for the Underlord."

Looking at the priest that is still in the chamber. "What has the Underlord been doing these past couple of days?"

Nonam's dispel magic didn't slip past her spell resistance. Cantos' spell had no effect either.

Gareth's protestations of innocence cause Trantellia to round on him instead of Nonam, "You promised you would return my vial alone if necessary. Perhaps you still have your gifts, but the wizard sold his! I believed you once. Never. NEVER. NEVER AGAIN!" She doesn't seem extraordinarily reasonable about the whole thing.

She doesn't attack with her sword again, but she does cast feeblemind on Nonam. (will dc21 w/-4).

Jus has by now heard Addinein talking in the room, so he knows that Gareth believes he is fighting Trantellia. Surveying the situation out the window, Jus sees that they could run across rooftops most of the way there. It would take a good bit of time. He could use dimension door, but they still wouldn't be close enough to the aerial combatants to engage in melee. From the window, the combatants are about 200 ft away. From the likely dimension door location, the combatants would be about 30ft overhead.

The puffy priest looks at Addinein, "If the Underlord were a dragon, he would have transformed to his original shape in death. I have no answer to your other questions. The Underlord has been working closely on the Overlord's agenda." The puffy priest looks up at the guards, "What are you still doing in here? Get some casters and bowmen out there!"

Cantos arrives at the melee. Qualde will soon be there.

The warrior bellows back to the dragon. "The vial was DESTROYED by the Matron or by the attacks on her - I do not know which! There was nothing to return to you! And we had no way to get back to your lair. We barely survived to escape! And you did not require we return the items anyway, only the vial - which we could not. And you did not say there was a time limit on our return! These things were NOT in our deal! We had no way to contact you - we did not know where your lair is exactly. We had no WAY!". Then the warrior turns grim and says dangerously. "If you continue this, you may kill some of us, but you very well may die in this battle. We have improved more than you might imagine, having ascended to dragon level, like the Gold Dragons - and we have killed another evil huge dragon already. I do not want to fight you - but I will... (Intimidate DC 24 - last roll in list)". The warrior glides slowly around and away from Nonam as he speaks so that there is no way the dragon can catch them both in a spell or other attack. If the dragon moves to attack Nonam or himself, the warrior launches his two handed attacks on her, and looks for any attacks of opportunity if she casts on Nonam. He holds fast his attacks if she does not strike. (Ht AC 43,[44],25,34,[33] for 17+[18]+15+14+[19]=83 DMG)

Jus has presence of mind to tell the guards that Trantellia is a crazy, ancient, evil dragon and that they had better get as many reenforecments as they can.

While moving towards the melee, Jus slips his Ring of Spell Storing off and the communication ring on (using Quick Draw feat?). "Nonam," Jus speaks through the ring, "don't hesitate to use your teleport ring to get us out of here if we can't defeat her."

Jus then casts Haste on himself and begins preparing a couple of more spells.

Nonam's spell doesn't make the female assassin's sword disapppear, but it renders it useless like Gareth's. The woman screams in rage and quickly slides her sword back in the scabbard.

Next everyone gets a lesson in just how quickly a dragon can revert to its true form. The woman shifts and grows into a huge dragon almost instantly. Gareth, Nonam, and Cantos find that they are pushed back by the huge body. Fortunately everyone is in the air, so you don't take any type of crushing damage.
Nonam is now above the dragon. Cantos and Qualde are near the tail and hind legs, and Gareth finds that he is now directly in front of the gaping jaws of a really big dragon.
Noxious fumes come from the cavernous maw. The dragon quickly focuses on Gareth and speaks, "We are not playing games little man. You are indeed stronger, perhaps even a bit smarter, but you are nowhere near having the ability to destroy me."

Then the dragon fear hits. (will dc 31 or you are shaken (ie. -2 to attacks, saves, and checks)).

The dragon doesn't actually move to attack, so Gareth and Cantos hold their attacks. Qualde strikes, but finds that the attempt is quite useless.

Tericus and Jus, still watching from the window, see a small pouch fall from her belt during the transformation. It lands on a rooftop below.

Addinein sees that the guards have followed the priest's orders and have left the room. He can hear shouts down the halls and the stamping of booted feet. The priest appears to be preparing the Underlord just as Tericus had been

The warrior feels rather small as the huge creature takes her true form. "Magnificent indeed great Wyrm...". He had a speech all ready to go but just can't seem to get it out as his intimidation is quite significant (only chance to save was a natural 20, oh well...). The warrior holds again, trying to stall so that reinforcements can arrive if the fight cannot be averted. There's even this foolish feeling of hope/euphoria he may avert this altogether! He speaks out again, but it probably sounds more like stammering "Did you really come all this way just for us!?! Why have you killed the Underlord? All you had to do was contact us and we would have come - or at least spoken. Is it truly necessary for us to do battle? We killed your greatest enemy and all her children and children's children, that must be worth something.". The warrior is ready to launch his attacks in an instant. If she twitches in any way that looks like casting or any other attack he'll strike, focusing on her eyes - trying to blind her or even get lucky and hit her brain. He'll stab at her thrice, hitting at least once (Hit AC 33,26,33-nat 20!,[28] for 16+16+18+14=64 DMG). He says into his ring telepathically "Tericus, I am going to need you immediately. Gareth hammers blows on the dragon. All but one bounce off the thick dragon hide, and that one has a diminished effect due to the stone skin. Trantellia snarls, "I didn't come here for you little man. How vain you are... just like I remember. I came for the Underlord for my own reasons, you Three are just bonus."

Trantellia attempts to bite the warrior before her. Gareth has no way to get out of her way as the gigantic jaws clamp down quickly on him(AC59). The intial impact of the teeth does 23 pts damage, but then the dragon snatches Gareth up and keeps him dangling from her jaws.
(grapple check is automatic for her, humanoids are too small to avoid it.) It doesn't take Gareth long to realize that he's in a bad spot.

Nonam's spells hit the dragon on the back. Somehow the massive creature dodges out of the way of some of the fireball to take half damage, but the chain lightning works to full effectiveness. Trantellia is not amused and zaps Nonam with another quickened disintegrate.

Down below in the street, guards are finally starting to arrive on the scene. A few start to come out on the rooftops. They all seem to have bows, but they're also scared to death. Seeing his attacks merely bouncing off the huge Wyrm, the warrior decides to take a different approach. He pulls off a ring he was wearing with his teeth and swallows it - wondering if that is merely a precursor to what's about to happen to him. He then reaches into his belt pouch and pulls out his ring of regeneration and puts it on, hoping there will be something left of him to regenerate from. He thinks into his ring, "I am lost! Best of luck, my friends.". All the time he makes sure and keep his arms outside the gaping jaws in hopes that he can at least prevent himself from being swallowed, hoping to get one last attack.

Jus attempts to land them at a spot sufficiently behind Trant to mask their arrival, but close enough to the bag that someone could dash over and grab it.

As soon as they reappear, Jus speaks through the group's ring, "Spread out! Gareth, this is Jus," Jus reminds his comrade in case he's too distracted by the incredible size of the dragon's teeth (and stench of its breath), "accept my spell through my Spectral Hand's touch!"

The guards and undercity mages become a little more active. A few more fireballs and lots of tiny arrows strike the big dragon.

Nonam and Jus get their spells in place to help Gareth out, and Trantellia spits out the pesky warrior. Gareth's seen worse. He's even looked worse, but the blood and thick dragon saliva mixture that covers him now isn't pretty.

The dragon swings her serpentine head back away from the warrior, "It seems that we have some company. I suppose that I'll have to deal with all of you some other time." She concentrates, casts, and is gone. She's teleported somewhere. The artificial sky is clear.

Tericus bends down to look in the bag on the roof. The bag is heavy, and the priest hears the tale-tell jingle of coins inside when he picks it up. A quick peek reveals a number of platinum coins and a note. It reads:

The leaders of Floating City are proving troublesome. Remove one of them from leadership so as to invoke Turtle Law. Perhaps the next officials will cooperate with Plateau. -V

Gareth's sword says, "Take me to the weaponsmith."

The warrior spits back at the dragon "We'll find YOU next time!" After that he just hovers there - not sure whether to bellow in anger or sigh in relief as the dragon leaves. In a moment he gathers his wits, shakes his head - and some of the spittle off, and flies down to those on the roof. "Can any of you see where the dragon went? Can we follow her - I mean follow her later when we're ready?" After looking at the note he says "Vallentino... Not even I could miss that. Seems a bit light on the payment though. A dragon would need more of an incentive to do this than just that."

Nonam looks at Gareth, "She teleported. There's not a simple way to find out where. We could attempt a scrying, but that's not really my area of expertise."

The wizard looks the note over, "His name is Valiano, Gareth. Perhaps he didn't know that she was a dragon. That much platinum is certainly enough to hire a simple assassin. She could have then accepted for any number of reasons that she alone would know. What troubles me is Valiano being associated with such a deed. I thought he was one of the good guys on the council."

The guards start to spread out with a little more confidence now that the dragon is gone. Pretty soon crowds of people are out on the street below trying to figure out just what happened. The flying party members stick out a like a sore thumb.

Qualde and Jus head back to the Underlord's chamber. The priest seems absolutely absorbed in his task, but the Underlord hasn't moved yet. The puffy priest is sweating away and looks red in the face. He seems to be making little progress. Finally, he looks up, "It's not working. I don't understand it. It's like the soul isn't in the right place or like Gargul is ignoring the summons."

A familiar voice behind Qualde responds, "I have heard similar things from other priests. Even if he is resurrected, the law is quite clear. New elections must be held if either the Under or Overlord dies while in office. Resurrection doesn't change the fact of death, especially as public as this one has been." Jus turns to see the Overlord.

Nonam

Nonam looks at Tericus since he has the note, "Hold on to it, we might need it later." Then Nonam flies back to the Underlord's chamber. Instead of going in, he sits down on the window ledge to think about everything that's just happened.

Gareth
Thursday February 14th, 2002 10:10:43 AM

The warrior accepts the spell from Cantos gratefully. "The dragon dropped the bag on purpose. No way one such as her would make a mistake and do it by accident. Why was it with her at all? And why did she not destroy the letter immediately upon reading it? Makes no sense. I hate to bug you guys about magic again, but isn't there some way you can tell how this note and bag was created? Maybe where it has been? I have to agree with Jus, probably a trap, but for sure we'd better hide it. Even if its true we owe Valliano a visit and a chance to vindicate himself.".

As the priests argue over how to raise him, the warrior watches the Overlord carefully. "Nobody outside this room knows he's dead. If we can resurrect him immediately, it would be no different than him being severely injured. Is that not the best solution - or is it more complicated than that? I am not one for politics, but it seems to me stability in the government is most important in this time.".

"Well, that priest knows the Underlord died, and Priests of Alemi can't lie, can they? Plus all those guards that came in know. Some have gone back out, and they've probably talked to other guards. Half the undercity probably knows by now. None of that matters though, I hurt all over. Get me fixed!"

"Well I am no major magician so I can't help you much there Gareth, but I agree we must find Valiano and get his side of the story," Cantos says as he arrives back in the underlord's chamber.

Addinein

At a loss for words for the moment, Addinein pitches in, in whatever way he can.

Jus (STR+5, DEX+5, CON+4; AC 27; HP 96)
Friday February 15th, 2002 4:52:14 AM

Jus falls back, allowing others to speak. He does give one grim nod towards the Overlord, surprised to see him here so quickly.

Jus ponders the situation, wondering why Trant got involved, and why the Underlord hasn't returned. A possible reason comes to mind, although it isn't one he'd like to consider for long.

"I wonder," Jus speaks out loud, "if Gargul has fallen."

"It will be a different world for adventurers and high-profile people if we can't rely on our return," Jus says, nodding to the priest and the elaborate rites he has failed to invoke.

"What next, Gareth?" Jus asks, turing to the party's leader. "I suggest we start taking a more active role. Frankly, I am more than tired of following the river's flow, and if we are to withstand the rapids ahead, we'd better start guiding the boat."

Overlord (DM DEH)
Friday February 15th, 2002 11:08:56 AM

The overlord smirks in a grimly amused smile as the adventurers try to wrap their arms around the intricacies of government in Floating City. "My friends, you should leave the governing to me. You know nothing of the power and influece of Turtle Law. After decades of study I still find myself at a loss sometimes. There MUST be new elections. We have no choice but to follow the law as handed down for millennia. If you think we have problems now, go back and read what happens when the law is not followed. This is nothing!"

In a moment, a well armed guard you recognize from the Overlord's palace seems to appear from thin air behind a well disguised portico and walks up to the Overlord in a hurry. He urgently whispers something in his ear that visibly shakes the leader for an instant. "What did you say? Are you sure?" Composing himself, he says, "It appears I have unexpected visitors in my throne room. The Gold Dragons, and (looking back to his guard for confirmation) 15 of the most ancient huge dragons of the Wold in human form are waiting to speak to me. And some of them are Red, Green, Black and Blue... Somehow, I'd say you'd better be there." He directs your gaze to where his guard came from. "Over there is our emergency transport between the 2 throne rooms. It serves as our alarm system and emergency exit. It only allows those who have been attuned to it to go through. It does severe damage to others. As special agents I have had each of you 'programmed' into it. Conclude any business you have here, compose yourselves and let's go through. I need you sharp for this I am sure. I want you with me. I will leave the Underlord's organization to begin preparations for the election." Looking back one last time to the body of the Underlord, clearly troubled at the sight, he strides over to the portico and waits, quite impatiently.

Of Turtles and Dragons

And so we meet... DM DEH
Friday February 15th, 2002 11:25:16 AM

The priests determine with great effort that they cannot resurrect the Underlord, confirming the words of the current leader of the entire city. They cast spells to preserve their fallen leige's body and decide to lay him in his room for now while the clerics try to divine what they can do for him from their gods - if anything. Other lesser priests finish healing the Storm Dragons from their fight with Tarentellia. The mages, scribes, and sages ask our heros brief questions about this dragon but it is clear they would like an exhaustive inquiry. They refrain though due to time but ask you to commit to speaking to them at some point in the future.

The dragon has escaped, other dragons await, a city has been cast into turmoil, the now 'outlawed' Gold Dragons are in the city, and the Storm Dragons are in the middle of it all. What to do, what to do...

Gareth
Friday February 15th, 2002 11:29:42 AM

The warrior considers Jus' words and nods. Leaning toward going after Tarentellia he begins to speak just as they discover that one dragon may be the least of their worries. He wipes himself off after being healed and says, "I'd say we'd better go see what this is all about. If the Gold Dragons are there, we would do well to coordinate our efforts. Perhaps Sturtavent and Oratai are there since they were going to see them after they left us." He makes sure everyone is ready and he follows the Overlord.

Cantos

Cantos smiles and thanks the clerics for the healing then goes after Gareth.

Tericus

"Remember what Sturtavent said, though. The Dragon groups and dragons see us as enemies. Hopefully they have been convinced otherwise, but it's best to stay on our guard."

Anthony DM Game 6
Sunday February 17th, 2002 5:02:47 PM

Hello all. I am about to post your entrance into Game 6 (The Gold Dragons). Please post there on Monday. Also please post a private post there to make sure your posting privileges have been added there. They should have been, but things are going to move very fast and I don't want anyone to miss out on the fun. I'm posting your entrance now.

DM JK

1100xp to everyone for the fight with Trantellia. 150xp bonus to Gareth for figuring out who she really was and being right in the combat, 100xp to Nonam for being right in the combat and forcing her into her true form by taking out her sword, 50xp to Cantos for not wasting anytime in showing up when Gareth called for help.
The bag holds 5000pp. (Split evenly that's 714pp 2gp 8sp 5cp each. Maybe we don't want to split it that way though.)

DEH

Are we doing any hero points?

I think Gareth and Nonam should get one for going toe to toe with the dragon by themselves (before the others came along). Gareth also stayed in front of the huge maw, risking being eaten so the others could get there. Qualde and Addinien stood up and were willing to take the "Test of Truth" in the face of intense racism - perhaps not terribly life threatening, but quite heroic. I'll look for others if JK feels it is justified.

On the treasure. Gareth feels at this point that the newer members of the party need to "catch up" on their magic so that they can survive the coming battles. He votes that Tericus, Cantos, Qualde, and Addinien split the 5000 PPs. We also have a sizeable kitty. Gareth votes that the above mentioned be able to draw on it freely to outfit themselves. I'm thinking that having all members on relatively even footing in the way of magic and additional power is most advantageous to the group right now. Comments?

DM JK
Wednesday February 20th, 2002 8:24:37 AM

Those 4 hero points are granted. Discussion of treasure should take place in character.

Todd
Wednesday February 20th, 2002 7:02:03 PM

ummm. There are 3 request for Hero points, with two of them concerning two people. ummm. I can't make 4 come out of any combination?! :) unless you're talking splitting points in half? :) (I think you meant 5 points, or 3 considerations) :)

DM JK
Thursday February 21st, 2002 10:05:38 AM

Gareth, Nonam, Qualde, and Addinein each get one. I'm not entirely sure that Gareth nearly getting eaten constitutes one. I didn't realize he was asking for two at first.

What about this division of treasure? There's also some party treasure that Gareth is holding on to. The group as a whole could stand a trip to the Catacombs for some more goodies.

Thursday February 21st, 2002 11:31:41 AM

I was really only adding justification for 1 Hero Point for Gareth. 1 is fine. Sorry for the confusion.

I am here and pondering what I need to improve my abilities, I would like a day or so to look over some things then I will have an idea what can better equip myself.

Todd:Addinein
Friday February 22nd, 2002 6:47:33 AM

I'm here. I'm hoping to do some thinking on what Addinien should get, this weekend. i'm also waiting to here on a min/maxing report.

JK
Friday February 22nd, 2002 7:29:56 AM

There's a good chunk of change available. I haven't added it up, but I would guess there would be about close to 40,000 each available to Tericus, Cantos, Addinein, and Qualde. That's enough for some really good stuff. The Catacombs is also currently offering 90-99% value on trade ins, so if you want to get a new sword, you wouldn't lose much value on the old one.

John
Friday February 22nd, 2002 3:48:59 PM

Don't wait for the min/max report. I've been waiting about 3 months and have finally moved on. If your min/max report drives what items you get, I'll allow an exception in the Catacombs and give you 100% trade in of recently purchased items [let's say... within 1 month].

The 90-99% trade in value may change. I will probably drop it to a straight percentage somewhere in the 80-90% range. I haven't given the topic enough thought yet, so "take advantage of today's low cost trade-ins now!" :)

Is Lee-Anne, Qualde, okay? Anyone know? Is Tericus reading this board?

So, does anyone have any feelings on your equipment? Is it sufficient? Is it relatively poor compared to others? Do you care? If we had to fight a dragon tomorrow, could we beat it? If not, would you at least survive? What do you need to improve your chances of seeing another tomorrow? More HP? More AC? Better weapons? Do you have a niche in the party? If not, could magic items help find you that niche?

Cantos: Wade
Saturday February 23rd, 2002 9:02:57 AM

Cantos would benifit most from AC and better weapons, but its a challenge to min/max a straight bard lol. As to Jus and Addinein's min/max eport it has been in Jerrys hands for a while now I guess I will need to get it back and send you the results, sorry it hasnt got to you yet but they have been done.

Gareth
Saturday February 23rd, 2002 9:19:12 AM

One thing is for sure, we need to be more prepared if we're going to fight the likes of a dragon.

Addinein:Todd
Saturday February 23rd, 2002 7:31:43 PM

I can tell you now. The first week of March, I'll be traveling. I may or may not have access to I-net. So I'm going to probably need someone to play Addinein for that week.

JK
Sunday February 24th, 2002 8:28:26 AM

Anybody want to play Addinein? I'd do it, but between Nonam and the roll of DM I have too much control of the game already.

What about doing some in-game minmaxing instead of waiting for Jerry et al since they seem to be busy? John Klinger and I have spent the past few weeks going over Jus and Nonam. We may not be the experts, but I made significant improvements to Nonam just by trading in items and getting new ones better suited to his needs. I don't think I spent a dime. Instead, I currently have about 2000 in credit at the catacombs.

DEH
Sunday February 24th, 2002 11:37:06 AM

I'm beginning to explore changes to make to Gareth. There are some really obvious changes I might make, but there are some "story line" considerations to some of those decisions. Might it be more interesting to allow him to struggle with not being able to wear metal armor and keep his picky sword (and improve it) than to trade in his sword and get metal armor? That would change a lot about him and a long time struggle he faces. Just to name one issue...

Todd, I'd be willing to play Addinein. Might be better for someone else to take him since I'm assistant DM right now, but I'll do it.

Cantos
Monday February 25th, 2002 7:31:40 PM

If you could let me have an idea of how much party treasure I might use to upgrade I could start in the catacombs tomorrow

JK
Tuesday February 26th, 2002 8:48:10 AM

There is currently 153737gp available as party treasure.

Nonam, Gareth, and Jus aren't going to spend any of the party funds since they have plenty. Addinein, Cantos, and Qualde should definitely get a big share. I'm not sure about what Tericus should get. He stands right in between the two group. If the party loot is split 3 ways then the low 3 each get about 50,000, and they get close to Tericus' cash value.

I'd recommend that Tericus sell his invisibility stone, if he wants better stuff. It's been some time since he used it, and the Catacombs will value that single item at about 100,000. That's a sufficient sum to buy pretty much whatever Tericus needs. If he wants something that costs a little more than that's worth, then the party could probably help him get it.

I'd also suggest that anything bought with party funds be considered a party item. Whoever buys it gets to use it permanently, but if they ever leave the game then those items marked as party items would stay behind for whoever comes in next to either use or trade for something better suited for them.

Nonam and Jus have also both made arrangements out of their funds for the low 3 to get vouchers good for purchasing items in the Catacombs.

Nonam's vouchers are 12500gp ea. If you spend or are going to spend your share of party loot, he'll give you one with the stipulation that if you ever leave the group then the items bought stay behind. And if you don't use it all, you make the remainder of the funds available to the party.

I'll let John speak for how Jus will handle his though I suspect it will be similar.

John
Tuesday February 26th, 2002 2:01:55 PM

Ditto. Your stipulations sound reasonable to me. Consider another set of 12500gp vouchers available to Cantos, Qualde, and Addenedin.

Todd
Wednesday February 27th, 2002 4:24:09 PM

So total for spending is 75000? For the low 3?

The warrior marks off 50,000 gp out of the kitty as he hands it to Cantos in the Catacombs with a big smile. "I'm relieved you are taking this, my friend. You are a valued ally and deserve to be prepared in the best way we can come up with - ALL of us do (looking to everyone)! Together we will make this the greatest group of adventurers the Wold has ever seen!".

(I'll take that off as the 5,000 PPs we just got).
