And how do we do that exactly?

The Dragon Council meeting has finished. Valdor has failed to give the Storm Dragons clear directions on what they should do next. Though he has suggested checking on the giants in the Scab.

The only pressing issue that you were dealing with, the death of the Underlord and the new elections seems well under control. It seems that adventurers aren't needed to plan an election. The Overlord has also increased his security, and he has rather publically contacted A'tath to speak about the threat of dragons. You know that he plans to slip something else into that conversation.

The city seems fine. The decisions are yours to make. A trip to the Scab? Further meddling in the politics of Plateau City and the Big Float? Or perhaps some other course designed to strike a blow at the Dark Lord?

Monday March 4th, 2002 10:21:45 AM

"Well I guess we should get our things together and head out to see some giants," Cantos says with a smile, his fingers caressing a new bow and dancing over the hilt of a handsome rapier. "By the way, if I haven't said it today, thanks much for allowing me to upgrade my equipment. It was getting very threadbare."

Gareth
Monday March 4th, 2002 11:37:17 AM

After everyone comes back down to breakfast after the dragon meeting, the warrior stands and clears his throat. "I have something to say that I want everyone to hear. I owe an apology and I must make it right - right now. During our encounter with the Gold Dragons there were several comments made that sounded to me like some of you think you are still "junior members" of this group - or that you hold some position like the Gold Dragons do 'Friends of the Gold Dragons'. It also troubled me that there was hesitation by some to accept the money from the kitty to add to and upgrade their gear. After thinking about it, I realize that I have assumed too much. I guess I just thought everyone understood that all who are in this group now are just that - a group - a team. I never really gave much thought about saying anything about it - and that is my mistake. It was only in this last meeting did I come to understand that we have never really said otherwise and it seems to me that some of you still think they are 'junior' members - or 'friends of the Storm Dragons.'

"So here it is - and I'm sure this is unanimous: Addinien, Qualde, Cantos: As the newest members of this group you have repeatedly and consistently proven your valor and support of this organization in all of its dealings and adventures. You have contributed to it and are directly responsible for much of its success. Tericus, although you have been around longer than these 3, you too are not of the original group. You have saved my life many, many times, my friend. I would not be here without you. You have again and again helped this group survive and succeed. For what it's worth, I would like to announce that all of you are - and have been - full members of this group. And I am sincerely sorry if this has not been understood before now. You are us and we are you, and I for one commit you my life in return for the same." The warrior stands a moment, clasps hands with anyone so inclined, and sits down - not wanting to delay breakfast too long... :)

Nonam
Monday March 4th, 2002 11:39:49 AM

Nonam walks in without his characteristic black robe. Instead he is wearing black leather pants and a loose blue overshirt. Every now and again you catch a glint of silver from beneath the shirt. The wizard has a small shield strapped to his back. Most of the shield is enameled in black, but the device in the center is bare metal. The effect is a sihouette style image of a rider on a dragon, bolts of lightning shooting from his outstreteched hands. Beneath the shield is strapped a loaded crossbow. The weapon is made of darkwood and appears to be of the finest quality. Atop his head, the reinvented wizard is wearing a snug fitting skull cap of black leather that covers his still balding head.

The wizard grins and says, "I went and did some shopping myself. What do you guys think?"

Then he looks over at Cantos. "Giants sound fine to me. Unfortunately, I've never been to the scab, so we can't teleport in. We're going to have to ride, fly, or something."

[I'll get things rolling as soon as we get some more posts. David don't forget that you're posting for Addinein, and I expect John's computer should be up soon.]

Tericus
Tuesday March 5th, 2002 9:18:28 AM

"I always thought of myself as part of the group, but its nice to hear it anyway." Tericus says with a smile. "I guess we can go see the giants. It seems to be the best course of action."

The dark elf stands and accepts Gareth's hand - only after his sister. "I am honored to be spoken of as a member of this group. Thank you.".

Having few better ideas, a trip to the Scab to check on the giants seems like a good choice. Plus it will be a nice change of pace to get out of the city and away from politics and politicians.
Just one question remains. How do you intend to get there?

Gareth
Tuesday March 5th, 2002 2:38:00 PM

"Do we know of anyone in the city who has been to the Scab? If so maybe we can use them to teleport there. Then you could teleport them back - or some such...". The warrior pulls out his map of the Wold and examines it carefully (I'm assuming the group has one...). He then snaps his fingers. "Valdor said Sturtavent and Oratai might come with us. Even if they've never been there - which they probably have - I would venture to guess that they could fly us there. And if they are not going to come, I bet they could get us there and return. Also, they may know the tribe chieftans of the giants and the dwarves there. That way we could maybe find out who is in charge of the giant alliance a little easier.".

Cantos
Tuesday March 5th, 2002 5:37:22 PM

"Thanks Gareth, for making me feel at home. You have all been... well, great doesn't do it justice, but will have to suffice," Cantos says with a grin. "Now as to how to get there, the dragons sound the best to me. Otherwise it's a lonng walk."

Nonam
Tuesday March 5th, 2002 6:03:50 PM

"I have a different suggestion. I have been to the bottom of the first plateau, so I could teleport us out there. I would suggest Edenmoor. Getting horses there shouldn't be much of a problem. We could be in the Scab by nightfall tomorrow, and we wouldn't have to deal with more dragons. Plus if we travel on the road, we'll have more opportunity to pick up information from folks on the road. We could even visit Loren Kenethir, the sage that introduced Gareth, Jus, and me. He might already know a great deal about what is going on, and frankly I wouldn't mind the chance to visit."

Tericus
Wednesday March 6th, 2002 9:42:11 AM

"A nice ride will do us good," Tericus says. "I'm a little tired of teleporting everywhere anyways."

Gareth
Wednesday March 6th, 2002 10:36:49 AM

The warrior smiles as if hearing pleasant music, or smelling the breeze on a fine Spring morning. "Loren Kenethir... now that's a name I haven't heard in a long, long time. I remember Edenmoore in my thoughts from time to time. Let's do it. Besides, I think we told him we'd see him again - and he probably knows more than we'll find on our own.".

Cantos
Wednesday March 6th, 2002 11:03:02 AM

"As long as we have a plan I am happy, I say we leave as soon as we all are ready." Cantos checks his quivers and pack. "Ok I am ready."

Wednesday March 6th, 2002 5:16:27 PM

Since no one seems to object to Nonam's plan, everyone makes their preparations to depart, and Nonam teleports the group to Edenmoor in the midmorning.

The group arrives just outside of Edenmoor on the south side. The town is little more than a dirty frontier village surrounded by a stout wall. There seems to be a great deal of activity up on that wall. Armed and armored men are bustling back and forth. It's quite different than the sleepy village that Gareth, Jus, and Nonam remember.

Almost immediately after the group teleports in, a bugler starts blaring a warning cry. Soon you can all hear shouts of, "Drow!" or "Enemy at the South Gate!" The gates begin immeidately closing, and archers atart to line the southern walls with military precision.

Nonam
Wednesday March 6th, 2002 5:31:41 PM

Nonam quips to Addinein and Qualde, "You know I could polymorph you two into elves so this wouldn't keep happening."

Then he pops his hands into the air and shouts, "We're good guys! Ask Loren Kenither!"

The wizard mutters under his breath, "Hope he remembers us."

Jus
Wednesday March 6th, 2002 11:59:37 PM

When the alarm sounds, Jus relexively starts to grab his bow. When he realizes what is happening, Jus carefully moves his hands away from his weapons.

"It would be rude, but perhaps we should've teleported directly into his study."

Tericus
Thursday March 7th, 2002 8:21:05 AM

"I guess we should be expecting this reaction," Tericus says with a sigh.

Nonam
Thursday March 7th, 2002 8:39:02 AM

His hands still in the air, Nonam glances over at Jus, "It's also more dangerous. He could have a protective spell up, or even worse he might have rearranged the furniture."

Thursday March 7th, 2002 10:55:18 AM

The warrior sighs heavily and says to the others "Wait here a moment..." He walks up closer to the gate. "I must apologize for our untimely arrival like this. We are the Storm Dragons, formerly The Three. We were originally introduced by Loren Kenethir the great sage - as has been said. I am Gareth Justinian and these are my friends. These drow - believe it or not - are good guys. We have come to investigate the massing of the giants on the border of the scab. We wish to speak to our good friend Loren Kenethir about this issue before moving on. May we enter? Or at least would you be willing to go and ask him to come speak with us?" (Diplomacy roll DC 16.)

Addinein
Thursday March 7th, 2002 11:35:48 AM

The elf blanches at the discrimination, being reminded once again that his heritage will haunt him forever. He replays the words of his Matron Mother again and again: "You will be the first to show the surface that we are not all evil. You have been chosen, represent us well...." Girding up his loins he stands in a non-threatening manner, making sure to not look like he is going for his weapons, and hoping the able warrior can convince them it's OK.

DMJK
Thursday March 7th, 2002 1:53:35 PM

The guards on the wall don't throw the gates wide open after Gareth's speech, but they don't start shooting arrows either. That's something at least.

There's an uneasy wait that lasts several minutes and finally the sage appears on the wall. He shouts a long, "Hulloooo!" and waves. Then he disappears from sight.

Several more minutes pass and finally Edenmoor's southern gate swings wide open. Loren Kennither stands there waiting and he motions for the group to approach. A troop of guards waits with him. They don't have their weapons bared, but they all keep a suspicious eye on the drow.

Kennither beams a smile as the group gets closer and says to the old three, "Hello old friends. It's been quite a while. I thought that you'd quite forgotten about me. It took a few years for you to swing back around. But you've been busy, yes? I've heard about many of the exploits of the mighty Storm Dragons. Heh, I knew you'd go a long way. And..."

Kennither seems completely oblivious to all the guards standing around as he rattles on, but finally a soldier that looks like he's an officer of some sort clears his throat, "Ah, Master Kennither, perhaps we could escort you back to your house. The men are still a bit edgy about the dark elves."

Kennither waves his hand at what he obviously considers a pest, "It's nonsense, Captain. Qualde Brey'tar and her brother Addinein are people of the finest quality, much better than many of the low-lifes in the city guard."

The officer frowns when he's called Captain. He clearly holds some other rank, but he seems willing to let it go until Kennither calls his men low-lifes. A dangerous look comes into his eye then, and he starts to speak. Kennither cuts him off though, "But you're probably right. We'll move on to my home where we can engage in more civilized conversation."

Without further talk, Kennither leads the large procession to his house. All is silent except for Kennither pointing out a few of the changes made in the town since Gareth, Nonam, and Jus last visited. He seems totally unaware of the gawking children and the folks peeking out from behind their curtains. The procession soon arrives on Snow Street and Kennither's house.

He opens the door and welcomes everyone inside. As everyone goes in, you all note that many of the guards remain outside to watch the house.

Kennither ignores it all, "As I was saying, it's good to see you again. And I welcome those of you that I've never met. I've kept tabs on your motley band for some time, so I feel like I know you all. Of course many of you don't know me. I'm Loren Kennither. I feel like something of a Storm Dragon myself sometimes since I brought these kids together for their first mission. So come on in, let me get some tea, and you kids tell me why you've come to visit me today. Somehow I get the feeling that you aren't just out on vacation."

The sage trots into the kitchen to get some tea.

Gareth
Thursday March 7th, 2002 2:55:28 PM

As the procession makes its way through town, the warrior nods to the slighted officer. He gives him a warriors' look of approval for his conduct and service. He refrains from calling his real rank out of respect for Loren Kennither, but it is clear from his unspoken words that there is respect there. As the old host enters his house, he looks back and says, "I am grateful for your tolerance. It was harsh what he said about your men, but these two drow - and there are others - are not evil. They were to be killed by their own people for their beliefs and so escaped to the surface. They do not worship that foul spider god, or do any of those vile things they are rumored to do down there. All I ask you is to judge them by what they do, not what you have heard about them. Form your own opinion. Don't be controlled by others." And with a nod he enters the house.

He follows the old man to his study and politely seats himself when bade - after he first stops and examines the chair he has chosen for his seat. "Hasn't changed any. But my how have I!" He seats himself and waits for tea. When Loren gets back with the tea he says, "We are here because the giantkind are massing on the border of the scab. We must find out why and then if possible try to recruit them to fight against the Dark Lord's coming assault. We were hoping you might have some information about this event - AND we surely wanted to see you."

Lieutenant Raltos (DMJK)
Thursday March 7th, 2002 3:59:22 PM

Just before Gareth slips into the house, the officer tells him, "I appreciate what you said. I am Lieutenant Mel Raltos. You and your friends will be treated fairly here. You have my word."

The lieutenant then returns Gareth's nod and lets the warrior get into the house.

The troubled elf seems to calm a bit as the old man pays him and his sister a high compliment. He keeps his demeanor stoic but not unfriendly as he walks through town. He does not return the stares of the onlookers - only focuses on the group and its current situation.

Jus
Thursday March 7th, 2002 7:55:38 PM

Jus enters the house, looking around for someone he expects. "Loren," Jus asks, "the last time we were here -- years ago -- we were introduced to a young lady. Is she still around?"

He remembers this intimately. It's hard to believe that five years has already passed. Jus wanders around the furniture, remembering the Dwarf he had trouble with -- and how ugly Gareth was back then. Times have certainly changed.

Cantos
Thursday March 7th, 2002 8:15:36 PM

Cantos strolls back behind the sage and Gareth winking at the children and smileing at the ladies he seems to be having the time of his life as he reaches the door he enters quietly and seats himself after the sage.

Qualde (DMJK)
Friday March 8th, 2002 8:11:25 AM

Qualde seems content to let the old man handle the guards. When they get into the house she says, "For hospitality, thank you. May that we show like consideration."

She sits down without taking any of the tea.

Nonam
Friday March 8th, 2002 8:15:59 AM

Nonam looks around the sage's house and breaks out in laughter for no apparent reason. Between gasps for air he tries to explain, "I remember... how I thought... I was such a powerful wizard back then." He chuckles again, pulls himself together and continues, "I thought Gareth and Jus were both weapon masters. We were just kids who didn't know what we were doing. We're lucky we lived long enough to earn those titles."

Kennither (DMJK)
Friday March 8th, 2002 8:37:31 AM

Kennither comes back in with a pot of tea and motions for everyone still standing to sit down. There seems to be a chair for each person.

He listens to the various statements and questions and chooses to answer Jus' question first, "Ah, I guess you mean Erilyn Windfellow. She stayed around for a while, but she had her heart set on seeing more of the world. She left for Plateau City a few years ago. She married a mechant of some wealth. He travels a good bit, and she often goes with him. Perhaps it's not as exciting as the adventuring life, but it's more interesting than sitting about in my house."

He leans back and sips a bit of tea. He still has a bemused look in his eye as he continues, "So my kids have grown up and found some worthy companions, but the wold is in trouble. They want to save it, but they don't know how. So they come back to the old man for a little help."

He pauses for a moment and becomes downright serious, "The giants are indeed massing, but I fear that they are massing to join the Dark Lord's army. It seems that you don't know which giants are gathering up there in the scab. They are mostly hill giants, but there are a good number of fire giants bossing them around. I have heard some stories about the occasional frost, stone, or cloud giant. What is particularly notable is that there are never any reports of Storm Giants. What you have then is an army of evil giants. Certainly, it's a threat, but when you compare it to the reports coming out of Izen, it gets worse. There are huge numbers of goblins and orcs moving into Izen. That's the reason for our increased defenses. The town has been attacked off and on again for the past few weeks. It's always small bands, but given the numbers every orc or goblin on the peninsula must be gathering in Izen. For a while rangers were keeping tabs on things, but it has become much too dangerous of late. One of the last to get out alive, said a tremendous army is forming up at the foot of Mount Bone. Orcs, goblins, trolls, ogres, bugbears, and even worse things are out there. We've sent word to Plateau City, and they've sent a few troops out here. Hardly enough though. They don't take the warnings seriously. I'm afriad they will move soon, and there is little that we can do about it. The seven of you plus me can provide them with a serious stumbling block, but there are thousands upon thousands of evil black beasties gathering. And worse yet, their general is a god. Things look bleak unless we find a way to stop Marteaus. The forces of goodness are scattered. They've waited til it was too late. Now He's ready to strike. I fear we have no hope of raising a similar force in time."

Qualde (JK)
Friday March 8th, 2002 9:04:06 AM

The priestess stands up and looks at Kennither, "Scout is needed. I am perfect choice and can blend in. I will prove goodness of my house to those." She absently points toward the door suggesting the soldiers guarding the house.

She takes Addinein aside and speaks to him in their native tongue, "I must do this task alone. I wish for you to stay here. In my absence Gareth leads the group, but you alone carry the honor of our house. You know the right paths to travel. Be certain that the Storm Dragons stay upon them, and remember that none of them are your betters. They are allies... and friends."

Qualde turns back to Kennither and picks the awkward common tongue back up, "Would please tell them that I am leaving?" Again she gestures toward the front door.

This is Qualde's exit until we hear from Lee Anne again. So don't everybody jump up to go with her. -jk

Gareth
Friday March 8th, 2002 11:46:29 AM

"You always were cocky, weren't you Nonam. Of course, you might have a leg to stand on now - albeit a stone one..." :)

The warrior considers Qualde's point as he takes in the news - and agrees after much discussion. "Our prayers and thoughts go with you, Qualde. Always remember your ring. You can speak to us any time."

After she exits the warrior sits down again and asks his old liege "So what do we do? What do you think is the best course? We can set traps, lead attacks and things, but is there any way we can get the giants to dispurse? Or better yet change sides? What of the good giants? Where are they?"

Nonam
Friday March 8th, 2002 3:55:04 PM

Nonam grins at Gareth and pulls up his pant leg, "It's not stone anymore. I fixed it. I finally managed to dispel all of those magical afflictions."

To demonstrate his point, the wizard presses his hand down on the arm of the chair and lifts it back up. Nothing happens. "See. I'm sort of suprised that you never noticed that my fingerprints don't glow anymore. I could probably even grow my hair back out. I imagine it would be it's normal black again, but I kind of like the sleek look."

There's something suspicious about the way Nonam said that bit about his hair. When was the last time he shaved his head anyway?

As Qualde starts to go, Nonam quickly agrees about the ring. "You can use the ring to great effect to show me a mental picture of your location, and I'll be able to teleport all of us to your side almost immediately should you need any help. What you plan is dangerous, but I agree that you are in a position to accomplish what many of us could not. Take care of yourself and return to us soon."

Tericus
Saturday March 9th, 2002 4:34:19 AM

Tericus frowns at Qualde's mission, but doesnt say anything. once she's gone he says "It seems like a hard journey there. And long. Is there anyway we can shorten it?"

Cantos
Sunday March 10th, 2002 10:59:54 PM

Cantos looks around the room and sweetens his tea. "This is very good thank you."

Addinein
Monday March 11th, 2002 4:01:44 AM

[ooc I've returned. Thanks David]

In a rare show of affection, Addinein hugs his sister. In their native tongue Addinein adds, "May Wardd protect you, since there is no one else.

I will do my best to honor our house."

The Call - DMJK
Monday March 11th, 2002 7:49:34 AM

Suddenly everyone's senses are assaulted by the call of the Dragonstone.

"He who has ears, let him hear the words of Valdor, formerly known as the Dragonslayer, now known as the Dragonstone.

"My brothers and sisters of the Wold, it has been given to me to contact all of you, and I have thought long and hard before sending you all this message. My companions, the Gold Dragons of Plateau City, and I have witnessed a great many things recently that led us to send this message. These words I speak, I speak with knowledge and understanding. I am sure that you all have seen and heard many unbelievable things over the last few weeks and months. I know of no other way to say this, so listen carefully. My known and unknown friends, war is coming! A terrible war against the most powerful of opponents. The one known as Marteaus gathers his armies now and is preparing to strike at all of our lands and homes. No where on this Wold is safe or beyond his reach. There is no hole deep enough nor a cave dark enough to hide from him. He has assembled an army of hideous creatures to attempt to wipe us all out at once.

"It is time to fight. We must fight for our lives, our families, our lands and our Gods. This evil will not go away if we turn a blind eye to it. We have witnessed the horrible things Marteaus has done and the abominations he creates. He must be stopped and his army must be destroyed. We will be outnumbered and many will lose their lives in the coming war. But if we do not start now and fight, we will all die, and everything we know will be ground under his heel into dust. So it is time to stand for what we know is right and good, and strike. We must strike at his temples and Caeroldra's and Ga'al's as well, since they are the ones behind all of this. Whether you use stealth or strength of arm, these temples must be destroyed.

"Do not fear angering a god, as they have begun something they should not have. When the war starts, each of you will have to kill at least 50 of the evil army to have a chance. For myself, well, I've been around a bit longer than most, so I'll aim for 100. Each of you must look to strengthen the defenses in your own town and country. You must have your people ready to fight to the death, if necessary. We must strike the temples now! If we can scatter their followers or at least disorganize them, it will delay their plans and make them alter their plan of action against us. I am no assassin, but I am charged with bringing together an army to defeat what I have seen. Do not be afraid, for we have 15 ancient dragons on our side and all of the Dragon groups of good as well. We must find alliances with all who would protect against the evil Marteaus has brought upon us. Seek the Dwarves, the elves, the halflings, the minotaurs and liontaurs. We must have an army to fight back and you are all the best in the land.

"We are the only hope in this dark time, but as long as one single candle is lit, the darkness will flee from it. When we face the Dark Lord, I will ask him how he thought he could possibly win with orcs and goblins fighting his battles for him. Stand up now for all of the Wold, for the love of our fellow good beings and all that is right and just. There will be great rewards for all who fight and survive this war! I will know of your deeds and will honor you in front of all who live. Some of you may earn the title of Dragon, others may earn valuable weapons and armor, but all will earn honor.

"When the time comes we must gather for the final battle, so be prepared. We know not when nor where, but be ready. We will win this fight, by all the good Gods, I know we will. I am Valdor the Dragonstone, and I will not accept any other end. Stand tall and proud and fight to win. It begins..."

Valdor's last words are barely a whisper, but all can feel his anger, but with no hate. And his pride is evident, but not necessarily in himself as much as with everyone he's relaying the message to. His words ring complete truth to any who can feel such things, and there was no hesitancy at all. It is spoken with complete authority, but also as a plea. Again you hear his last words, "It begins...."

It seems that Valdor has delivered his message. The adventuring groups are being summoned to their task. The dark one must fall, but how does one kill a god?

Qualde (JK)
Monday March 11th, 2002 7:52:53 AM

With a slightly embarrassed look, Qualde returns her brother's hug. Then she glances over at Tericus, "Feet work best for scout." Finally, she holds her hand up to display the communication ring, and after Kennither speaks to the guards outside, she leaves without another word.

Kennither (DMJK)
Monday March 11th, 2002 8:23:55 AM

Kennither arches an eyebrow after Valdor's message, "The Dragonstone? The Dragon Council has been reformed then? There's no other way he could have delivered such a telepathic message.
"Good, and I am glad that some of you are on the thing. Heh, don't look so suprised, you can learn a lot of things by living in a dinky frontier village. Especially if you have the title of sage. Now then, the Gold Dragons have visited Edenmoor in the past, and I have had the opportunity to observe him first hand. Valdor is a singularly mighty warrior, but he isn't always given to good sense. He knows that he isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer too, so he is some times given to indecision. Keep him on task in meetings, and always remember that Mordrid will serve as his principle counsellor. If you can convince Mordrid of a thing, you will also have swayed the Dragonstone."

Since Valdor's message hardly imparted anything new to any of you, the conversation quickly turns back to giants and the Scab. Kennither explains much of what he knows about giant society, and since he believes they are creatures given to free will, he tries to guess at the reason so many of them choose the path of evil. (your character now effectively knows anything about giants mentioned in the Monster Manual) He shares little that is of any real use save that he reveals the general location of where the Red Dwarves live in the Scab. "Should it come to war with the giants, the dwarves will be the ones to fight. They will also have been watching them. Seek them out in the Western part of the scab." To further clarify, he pulls out a map of the region and points to an area labled, "Dwarven Delvings."

Conversation continues for another few hours with Kennither saying little of interest until he says, "The problem that faces us now is, 'how does a mortal defeat a god?' Make no mistake, Marteaus holds deific power. If you held any doubts, the death of Domi should have dispelled them. One with the power to kill the God of War with his bare hands is a powerful god indeed. Dark Priests serve him in Mount Bone, and the goblin hordes worship him with feverish loyalty. These things are the source of a god's power. Sending missionaries to the orcs doesn't seem like a wise course of action. I don't know how else you would defeat a deity. Some scholars maintain that Alemi was once a mortal, and while in the mortal state he overthrew the old gods. These old gods are now known simply as Pantheon. If only we knew how we achieved victory in those dark days of old."

About that time, Qualde delivers a message on her ring. It's been about 2 hours since she left. "An army of thousands marches toward village. Seem to be resting now. Guess them come at night. No time for village to flee. Must prepare for battle. Our victory doubtful. Will warn when they march. Must go. Look suspicious talking to hand."

It is nearly noon now. Night will begin to fall in about 6 hours. It will be totally dark in about 8 hours.

Nonam
Monday March 11th, 2002 9:07:36 AM

Nonam chats casually with Kennither until Qualde's message, he frantically looks about the room, "I must try to rest and memorize new spells before they arrive. My current repetoir was not selected with battle in mind. Gareth, you and any others that don't need to prepare new spells need to work on getting the town prepared. Alert the guards. An attack will most likely come at night, and the goblin hordes will rely on their darkvision. However, their sight was designed for living in tunnels. They can't see much more than 100 feet in the darkness. We should keep the men from lighting any fires along the walls this night. They will only serve as beacons for archers. Torches and the like should be held at ready in case the fighting turns into a melee. Then the light will hamper and confuse them. We have little time to waste. Do what you can. I intend to memorize the most destructive spells I know, so don't count on me for strength spells and things of that nature. I'm going to retire. If the battle comes early, wake me, and I will perform with the spells that I have."

Tericus
Monday March 11th, 2002 9:53:54 AM

"I'm not prepared for battle either," Tericus says. "I'll go with Nonam and prepare my war spells." Then he adds as an afterthought, "Let's deal with this battle first, then we can worry about fighting gods."

Cantos
Monday March 11th, 2002 12:32:38 PM

Cantos sets down his tea quickly and looks at the group,"I require no time to prepare so I will look to the defences, Gareth care to come with me?"

Gareth
Monday March 11th, 2002 12:40:15 PM

The warrior asks Qualde, "What kind of army? Orcs, goblins? Answer when you can.".

He stands and says "OK, I'll speak to the city guard with Cantos, Loren, you'd better speak to the city leadership. Cantos, make sure you have plenty of arrows for that new fancy bow of yours. I'd imagine you best in that role. What do you think? Addienien, what do you feel is your best strength to fight this type of conflict? Arrows, close combat? I haven't really had a chance to see you in this type of sitation. I intend to go invisible and find the leaders. My first order of business will be to kill them. I expect Nonam or Jus can help with spell support - or not.". He merely nods at Jus, knowing he will be ready. Once his questions are answered, the warrior goes out and speaks to Leutennant Raltos. "How many archers do you have? Any pit traps and such set outside the walls? We have 6 hours until dark. I'd suggest we spend some time on those. Might make the difference between survival and death. Any catapults. Pitch? Tar? Large stones?". Gareth immediately gets into full swing helping in preparations in any way he can.

Addinien
Monday March 11th, 2002 2:13:19 PM

"Can probably help with perimeter guard with no light. See well in surface version of no light.

I can help with enhancements to warriors. Make them quicker, and more hardy. Along with being ok warrior myself. Probably can help with killing leaders if that is the better course of action. Don't know if we can lead armies into any kind of mass traps."

Qualde (JK)
Monday March 11th, 2002 4:06:10 PM

Qualde quickly answers Gareth, "Don't call anymore. Get me killed. Orcs, goblins, trolls, orges, other things. All around. All can hear."

Raltos (DMJK)
Monday March 11th, 2002 4:26:30 PM

Raltos quickly becomes agitated as Gareth speaks to him, "Other than a wall to stop small raids this little village is barely defensible. If we have time, we should evacuate instead. We rely on troops from the capital for true warfare. As you can see there aren't any armies around in town. There are no siege weapons of any kind. There's a little tar and pitch, but just small quantities suitable for patching a roof. We don't have a warehouse full of the stuff or anything. The only caster I know of that lives in town is the Sage. There aren't any traps outside town either. Most of that is farmland, and kids play in the area that isn't. You're in a town of farmers and small merchants, not a garrison of warriors.

There are about 600 people living in town. That includes women, children, and the elderly. Of that 600, 75 are guardsmen and about 100 are men of figthing age in the militia. The militia consists of little more than middle aged shopkeepers with pitchforks or the occasional rusty sword. Of the professional guard only 25 of them have any real experience. The other 50 are recent recruits hired to deal with goblin raids. Most of them are just kids. As far as archers and things of that sort, most men in town have a bow for hunting, but not many of them are going to have more than 20 or 30 arrows. Krenshaw the fletcher might have a few more on hand, but he usually just takes orders and fills them. He doesn't keep a lot of extra merchandise laying about."

Kennither
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 8:38:01 AM

"I will go and consecrate areas in and around town. I can do a great deal to stop the undead amongst them."

Tericus
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 9:44:42 AM

"Before any of you warriors go wandering off to fight giant leaders, come see me so I can cast spells of protection on you." Tericus says just before he goes to memorize spells

Gareth
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 11:13:15 AM

The warrior nods to Tericus.

He the information about the army comes in, he frowns at Raltos' answer. "Has the contingent from the Plateau arrived? Does anyone here have any experience building traps. On nice thing about farmland is that it is soft. We ought to be able to build some before night if we have anyone with experience. Right now, anything we can do to injure, maim or kill them as they charge will help us. Also, is there any good way to get the women and children out of here - say to the east or west (i.e. out of their direct line to Plateau City). Even though they might pursue them, at least that way they'll have a chance - and give us time to help them escape.".

Raltos
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 11:40:03 AM

"We are the westernmost province of New Elenna. Further west lies Izen and Mount Bone. Taking women and children there would be a foolhardy move. Fleeing to the east and trying to ascend the plateau at Haxwell would be a better choice. The women and children will move slowly though, and that road is an open one. We would be sending them to slaughter without an escort of armed men. Sending them south along the river to Maduchy would be a swifter course. We're talking about nearly 400 women and children in town though. There are two keelboats tied up at the docks. They are just small cargo ships, but I guess they could carry about 200 passengers between them. Maybe more if they cover the decks. More still if the women man the oars and we keep the crews here to help fight."

Gareth
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 11:48:09 AM

The warrior looks grimly at Raltos. "Do you think them staying here will be any better than sending them to slaughter? At least outside the city - where they can run - the creatures will have to kill them quickly instead of slowly. Somehow I think the barges should be used to get them out of here. At least if we hold them off a while they might gain some ground - and might in fact find other help out there with this call to arms Valdor just made. Also, it would be out of their way to go after them. Their target is the Plateaus. Seems the only change they have. What do you think?"

Nonam  d4+1=4 d4+1=5 d4+1=5
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 11:48:26 AM

Nonam hears Tericus and mutters something about the priest having a good idea. He steps outside to cast endurance on Gareth (con +4). Then he casts bull's strength on Addinein (str +5) and Cat's Grace on Cantos (dex +5).

He offers up a quick explanation, "I only had one of each memorized, but you'll find that the spells will last an hour or two past midnight. As long as the attack comes before that, the magic will continue to aid you. Now I must find rest."

The wizard traipses off looking for a place to sleep. He takes a bottle of wine from Kennither's kitchen in case he needs help sleeping in the middle of the day.

Raltos (DMJK)
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 12:15:56 PM

Raltos agrees and sets things in motion to get the women and younger children out of town. Raltos puts 10 of his men into summoning the militia. This takes about half an hour. Then he puts half of the militia to work getting the boats and the women and children ready. It's hardly an organized operation. So these 50 men will be occupied for another 3 hours. He also puts the 25 men that are too old to fight to work helping the fletcher make arrows. These 25 are occupied all day. Raltos comes back with tallies of the day's operations and reasons that there are about 125 men left to work on traps and other things. He also cautions against making the men work too hard during the day if they'll be expected to fight in the night. There must be some time to rest.

[BTW: I'm going to pick up the pace a bit. We could plan out the defense of the town for weeks, but the battle is going to take a long time too. And frankly the battle will be more fun for everyone. So, if you've got something that you want to do, say you do it. Figure that you have 6 hours before the men need to rest, eat, and otherwise prepare for battle. After your 3.5 hours, the other 50 men will be able to help out. Remember that the town's resources are limited. Farming and similar implements are in large supply, but there is little in the way of military material. Breakdown of men left in town. 200 men= 25 elderly, 100 aged 18-50 in the militia, 50 inexperienced guards, 25 elite guards, 1 fletcher, Raltos, Kennither, and the party.]

Gareth
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 12:34:27 PM

The warrior looks over the meager pitch and oil supplies. He directs large fires be made and pots set to boiling oil, pitch, and water - which seems to be in large supply. He gives the men who will be making the traps instructions on how deep and stuff. Also, he tells them to pile the dirt up so that the hoard must top the burms - making them better targets for the archers. He also gives instructions to those not able to fight well to be prepared to go about collecting arrows shot into the place by the approaching army - to be used back against them. He goes on and on, remembering his experience the last time the Dark Lord tried to overrun the Plateaus and the success they had with few soldiers needed. He tells the farmers to bring in their farming equipment and put atop the wall so it can be dropped on those scaling it. He helps them make shields on the walls to protect against arrows. And he has them set poles on the wall so they can topple ladders without exposing themselves. And he helps them shore up the gates to withstand any battering it gets. He helps them set up a catapult if there is time and talent. "Any casters who can build stuff?" he asks. They may not be able to destroy this army, and they may all die, but at least it will be hurt some. And if they can only hold it off long enough for them to get to the leaders... He works the men until it is time for them to rest, commending their efforts every step of the way.

Before Nonam retires, he says to him and Loren "Is there some way we can make us look like their leaders? Perhaps if we go kill the leader, we can assume his identity and give different orders for the army to move toward the Plateaus? Just a thought...".

Once he has done all he can, he waits for the inevitable...

Jus
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 1:43:05 PM

Jus heads towards a quiet place to rest and memorize his spells. Before he sits, he casts a few spells upon himself with hopes that they'll last as long as needed.

OOC: I should be active again until the 22nd. Then I'll be out on vacation until the 30th. Anyone want to run Jus?

Nonam
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 1:45:16 PM

Nonam gives Gareth an exasperated look and tosses him a vial. He only responds with, "Drink this." Then he closes the door and tries to sleep.

The label on the small potion vial says, "Intelligence."

Cantos
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 1:58:22 PM

"Tericus can you mem a spell to help give my arrows a better chance of doing damage? And if anyone could spare a couple of illusion spells they might help create the idea that we are more heavily defended than what we are." Cantos stops to think a moment "Gareth after we get the traps dug it might me a good idea to stuff clothes with hay and use sticks for arms to also assist us in giving the idea we are much larger than we appear." Cantos walks around the city helping where he can commending the workers and giving advice. "Gareth I am going to position myself in the middle of all the archers maybe my song can help us defeat this army by allowing us to hit better and harder." Cantos then walks over to see how the fletcher is doing then when all seem to be in preparation he will finally rest up on the wall listening while in the meditative rest of elves.

Tuesday March 12th, 2002 3:41:17 PM

Listening to Gareth, Addinein interrupts him, "If fleeing is the intent, and slowing the army is the idea. Then should we not also look to attack the food train. An army of that size is going to require lots of food. I'm thinking we can harass an army of this size with a small force from behind. The Storm Dragons could move in behind and attack the food stores, in order to slow down the movement of the army. Depends whether we want to move on the Giants and the Dwarves, as suggested. Or start working on slowing up the army so everything in front of the army has time to flee. We also have to consider how dire this is. We may have to destroy any source of food for the army, prior to them getting it in their hands. We are not large enough to engage this army. But they are large enough to be a logistic nightmare, that we might be able to complicate."

"Assuming we are going to need our strength for long periods of time, I can add grace to a person's movements, or fortify their health for 1/4 the day. More depending upon how short or long we want these affects. I can also give some protection within minutes of combat." (ooc Cat's grace, Endurance, Shield in relevent order)

As Addinein casts Cat's grace and Endurance on himself.

Kennither (JK)
Tuesday March 12th, 2002 5:55:49 PM

The Sage looks over at Gareth, "The wizard's methods are a bit harsh, but killing the leader and impersonating him would be difficult at this point. Locating the army, infiltrating it, finding and killing the leader, and rescinding the orders before they march in a few hours would be difficult at best. Plus Nonam probably doesn't have the required spells memorized, and he's much better at shape-changing magic than most. Even if such a move would became possible, I fear that Marteaus leads this army himself. We lack the power to slay him. I tell you truly, he has become a god. He could slay you with a thought."

The sage looks over to Addinein, "Harassing their rear might be a good idea, but we sit right on the border. They currently sit in territory that they control. A marauding party might well work in the upcoming weeks, but it shan't save Edenmoor today."

"Now then, I have some walls to bless. Before the dinner hour, I wish to have everyone who is willing meet in the town's chapel so that we may ask for Alemi's blessing on us tonight. While many of your plans sound like good ones, I believe that the favor of the gods is our best defense against the evil hordes."

After a long day (DMJK)  d100=6 d100=59 d100=83 d100=33 d20=17
Wednesday March 13th, 2002 9:09:52 AM

The day winds down and Gareth, Cantos, and Addinein look over the prepared defenses. The east side of the town was virtually left alone. The north and south were prepared in hasty fashion, but the western side toward Izen was well prepared.

The pit traps could certainly have been done better. They aren't too deep, but they've been covered nicely. The scooped out dirt was used to make berms. These are less satisfactory. They're too small and too close together to be truly effective, but they're better than nothing.

The efforts of the fletcher and the old men seem more promising. It appears that the old men averaged about 10 arrows each, and the fletcher made considerably more. They produced a total of about 300, which seems like a goodly number until you consider it's only 2-3 arrows for each defender.

The defenses on the wall seem less well thought out. Many of the dummies and the shielding system were poorly placed so that they could very possibly hamper movement on the friendly side of the wall.

There wasn't enough lumber or skill to effectively build a catapult.

Perhaps a few improvements could be easily made on the wall, but little can be done to the field. The men all worked hard through the day though, and Raltos moves about praising their efforts.

Additionally Loren Kennither has been busy. He has hallowed the field and blessed it so that it glows with the light of day. The evil hordes will not have the cover of darkness that they presumably have planned, at least as long as they come from the west. He has also consecrated the walls, so that the defenders will hopefully be protected by Alemi's blessing.

Allies (DMJK)
Wednesday March 13th, 2002 9:39:42 AM

The casters have awakened and finished memorizing spells just in time to attend Kennither's chapel service.

The Edenmoor chapel is a simple structure. It appears to be a generic chapel and there are small shrines in alcoves dedicated to each of the gods of Wold. Or presumably they used to be dedicated to each of the gods. Two of the alcoves stand empty, and there are no shrines to Domi or Caeroldra.

Kennither convinces all of the Storm Dragons to attend the service. Raltos, most of the old men, and a handful of the others also show up. Kennither comes out of the vestry wearing clerical robes. A gold chain bearing a magnificent ruby, Alemi's holy symbol, hangs about his neck.

He begins, "Friends and neighbors, we face a very real threat tonight. We've already labored hard, but I fear we'll toil more before the sun rises again. I've gathered you all here, so that we might ask for Alemi's blessing and aid in defending our town. I had hoped that everyone would come, but even in these dark hours, some have no faith. Perhaps, we shall be enough. Let us pray."

Kennither bows his head and leads a prayer requesting aid from the gods.

Apparently Alemi answers the sage. A bright vertical slash appears above the shrine to Alemi and two glowing figures step out. The glow quickly fades. The first being is the shorter of the two, and he barely tops five feet. He appears to be a well muscled human covered in short brown fur save for one obvious difference, he has a head like a dog's. Instead of apperaing fearsome, he appears very peaceful. His eyes glow with a bright blue light, and his smile goes a long way in dispelling fear.

The taller figure is even more imposing or perhaps inspiring would be a better word. A full seven feet tall, you all quickly notice the pure white feathery wings sticking out from his back. He's more muscular than any creature you've ever seen. He looks stronger than even Valdor. Almost as an afterthought, you realize that he is green and carries a tremendous greatsword that glows with a bright light of its own.

The tall angelic one speaks. His voice sounds like the sweetest music, "I am Meteor. My companion is Shep. Alemi himself has asked us to help you this night. We will make the evil ones turn and run in fear from our holy wrath. Our task is difficult. All of the Dark One's forces are marching from Izen. They are heading both east and west. Against Fagunia, Zilthmar, Culverwood, and New Elenna. Their numbers are nearly infinite, but a compatatively small portion marches against us. But we face the most fearsome of generals. Barbazou, one of the mightiest fiends, leads the dark forces against Edenmoor. But have no fear for I live to destroy fiends!" With the last line he spreads his wings and lifts his sword in the air. The cry seems triumphant, and you can't help but give a shout of joy.

Then Qualde's voice on the ring, "They come. Move quick. 2 hours."

Meteor raises his empty hand, "Fear not. Now is the time for rest and food. For now, we shall drink ambrosia and prepare our souls." He waves his hand, and tables appear. They are covered with a feast for heroes.

Shep grins and sits down to eat.

Gareth (+4 Endurance)
Wednesday March 13th, 2002 10:58:30 AM

Before the service, Gareth looks for a way that they can construct the pits so that they can flood them with water after they are sprung. That way it will slow sown the horde as they try to cross, and slow their progress. He also quaffs a Strength potion during the efforts, and offers them to others he feels are doing the lion's share of the hard work - to make them more effective. During the placing of the dummies, he mentions to those manning the walls to be prepared to pull out any arrows that are launched into them for the archers.

Looking like a fish out of water (he doesn't do this much...) the warrior prays with the others - knowing they really need the help. When an answer is given he is amazed and cheers as loudly as he can. When the table is offered he waits for the others to sit down. He then takes his place and eats. "Your help is most appreciated. As you can see, we need it. Do you have any words for us as to how we should go about our attack? Anything we should focus on?"

"Thanks Tericus, that will help," the bard says, placing his arrows back in his quivers. "I wish that there were more I could do about defenses, but I am out of ideas." The bard enters the church and kneels his head when the Sage prays but no thoughts save one come into his mind, "...Alemi, guide my arrows that I might strike fear into those that would destroy us. Guide us and help infuse us with Domi's might and strength." When the two celestials show up Cantos smiles and whispers, "Thanks, Alemi." He cheers when the others do. As they all sit down to eat, Cantos stands and taps his glass, "A toast good citizens. First to Alemi for providing us with friends in a time of need, Alemi." The bard raises his glass. "Second to Domi, you said have courage and here courage makes another stand, To Domi and Courage." He raises his glass again. "And finally to us, we few who have chosen to make this our first, but not last stand, To US!" Cantos backs away from the table and says loudly, "If this be my last battle let it be known that Cantos the Bard was honored to be here with each of you, you are the true heroes of this night." Cantos then bows to the assemblage and strides out of the Church. Walking quickly to his spot on the wall, he adjusts his weapons and checks the string on his bow, then, settling down to look over the walls, waits for the inevitable.

Meteor (NPC JK)
Wednesday March 13th, 2002 12:40:07 PM

The planetar speaks with Gareth. "Your defenses were prepared as ably as possible given your time and resources. My only advice is this: Follow my commands. I have spent centuries battling the forces of evil. I have slain more demons and devils than you will ever see. I command legions of the celestial army. Even now the gods wage war in the heavens. I've been taken away from that battle so that I might aid this town tonight. I mean to achieve victory, and I am accustomed to command. Listen to what I have to say and learn for the day when you will be in command. Also, our aid this night is not entirely given freely. I am to charge you and your band with a quest. The details can wait til after the battle, but when the fight is done. I will require you to continue your journey to the dwarves in the scab. They will need your aid, but they also have hope to offer you."

The celestial speaks no more of these matters and can not be persuaded. Instead, he speaks of cheerier things and happier times.

Jus is very suspicious at the arrival of these two beings. True, they calm him and almost make the coming battle attractive. Meteors last words almost convince Jus that these two are truly on the Storm Dragon's side.

His wariness wins out, however. Jus sits at the table with the others, but does not eat.

Nonam

Nonam notes Jus' suspicion and looks to Kennither. Seeing that the sage hasn't questioned the arrival of the two beings, he goes ahead and eats.

He talks some about tactics as he works on the meal, "They say you guys readied some traps and helped fortify the walls. I hope the plan is to use archers. I've memorized the most destructive area spells that I know. I can focus on troops and kill off as many soldiers as I can. I would suggest that our archers concentrate on killing any casters that they spot or otherwise the crews of any siege engines they might be using. The wall can give us protection from arrows, but if they start pounding us with fireballs and boulders, we might not last long."

Gareth (+4 Con)
Wednesday March 13th, 2002 4:56:47 PM

The warrior nods to Nonam, we shored up the walls, barred the gates, dug pit traps, built burms, and dug a tunnel to the river so that we can flood the pits once they are sprung to further slow their progress. We've also positioned bioling oil, pitch, and water atop the walls, as well as poles for pushing off ladders. Also I had them move their plows and heavy objects up top to be dropped on those scaling the walls. We've also made dummies and such. My theory is that as they shoot the dummies with arrows we can gather them and replentish our meager supply. Also, the fletcher has done quite well and made another 300 arrows - about 3 for each archer - plus their own store used for hunting. That's one thing I think we will do well with: These guys can shoot deer and stuff. They ought to be able to hit slow moving orcs. I agree though, they need to focus on the casters. What do you think some of us should do first? I can shoot, but I think it better if I perhaps engage the more powerful enemies who will no doubt lag behind. I'm open to any suggestions. I can prepare a sight for battle OK, but the high-level strategy I'll leave for you guys with the smarts....".

In a moment the warrior snaps his fingers. "You know, I have another idea. What if we placed the oil in trenches in a line in front of the walls? Then when a number of the enemy has gone over them we can ignite the oil. We could also line the trenches with firewood so thet they would burn high for a long time. I imagine we can do it before the army gets here if we hurry...". (The warrior mulls over the oil and pitch stores as well as the availability of the wood. If it all seems feasible, he'll excuse himself and get that last trap set before the big fight. He doesn't see any reason to even conceal the trenches. The army will press their allies straight into the flames without regard for them if his past experience is any indicator.).
