A New Day Dawns

A New Day's A-Comin' (DM Kim)
Tuesday August 6th, 2002 1:26:05 PM

Dawn breaks anew, sending horizontal fingers of light throughout the Fence level of the Floating City. The City awakens, its population stirs for the first time since the Cataclysm. Many are confused, befuddled. Some seem to remember some sort of nightmare. A few remember a battle and their part in it ... distant, as though it occurred in another age, in another lifetime. Why would grass cut into my feet? Dreams are strange. Some things are forgotten. Names of cities. Identities of certain people, certain creatures.

Nevertheless, the day at the Orphanage begins as it typically does, with the clamor of young ones rising from sleep with boundless energy, and needing breakfast.

"Pass the eggs," one boy requests. "They are so GOOD this morning!" a girl remarks. A man who drops off milk is overheard mentioning that no one can see any sign of Plateau City this morning. "Like it dropped off the Wold, or somethin', they're sayin'," he says as he heads out the door. "No, not lost in no fog. Tain't much fog out there, cross the water, just the little light mist for a foot or two where the sun hits the water in the mornin'. Just looks bigger, though, the lake, I mean. Sorry, gotta run!"

My, those eggs are tasty in particular. Are senses heightened somewhat?

Turin
Tuesday August 6th, 2002 3:37:57 PM

Turin eats his food in silence. The earlier events were not pleasant, and he's doing his best to drive them from his mind.

Tiree True
Tuesday August 6th, 2002 4:03:01 PM

Tiree eats breakfast with the rest of the family, enjoying the taste of food again. She's a bit quieter than she was before "everything" happened.

After eating, she helps clean up the table, leaving the dishes for whoever's turn it is before announcing, "I'm feeling restless Mama Faust. I'm going wandering. Need anything while I'm gone? Anyone want to go with me?"

Ubaerul
Tuesday August 6th, 2002 5:54:09 PM

Being his first time at the orphanage, Ubaerul still hasn't met all the children yet. And as he sits and eats his breakfast, his first one since leaving the service of Louis, Ubaerul looks rather annoyed at all that is going on in the orphanage.

Looking around at the other adventurers the orphanage has produced, Ubaerul decides to speak his mind.

"Between exploring the city and helping the children here all the time I'm baffled that you are able to remain in such a crowded house. Granted I can understand your desires to aid them, but maybe we should think about getting our own house to act as a base of operations. And with all this news about the city no longer being where it once was maybe we should try to get out and see what's going on outside the city."

Jezebella
Tuesday August 6th, 2002 6:03:47 PM

Jezebella seems a new girl this morning, laughing with the younger children, and mussing their hair. Her eyes are bright, and she practically leaps at the chance to get outside and enjoy the fantastic morning.

"I'll head out with you, 'Ree ... if you want the company."

Syr
Wednesday August 7th, 2002 1:47:12 AM

Syr spends a few minutes introducing Ubaeral to the children of the house. At times, he points out the troublemakers to the newcomer. More often than not he smiles at the antics of the kids to impress the 'new guy'. After the introductions, he wolfs down his breakfast and joins in the chatter, "Drake, who did the cooking this morning? These eggs are amazing!"

Looking up at the invitation to wander, "Count me in! After the chaos going on here, a nice peaceful stroll sounds like a plan. Why don't we go to the docks? I hear the view there is bizarre."

Flaust & Drake (DM Kim)
Wednesday August 7th, 2002 4:08:04 AM

Flaust nods to Tiree as she mentions going wandering. "After breakfast, after breakfast. Oh wait just a bit." Mother Flaust leaves the room.

"It's a secret recipe a druid just gave me," Drake answers Syr in a mock-conspiratorial tone. "He had pouches of herbs and spices. Said they'll make your eyes bright." We waits a beat, then adds, "Or fall out. I forget which." Before giving anyone a chance to groan too much, the ranking orphan adds, "Flaust told me to make sure you don't leave until she has a chance to talk to you. She'll be right back." As the dishes are cleared, and Drake breaks up a minor scuffle between young twin boys over the last piece of bacon by eating it himself, he asks, "Did you notice it's just a bit muggy this morning? That herb-crazed druid said the forest is moving in."

Flaust's proposal (DM Kim)
Wednesday August 7th, 2002 4:19:15 AM

The now teary-eyed boys' expressions change for the better once Drake pulls from behind his back two halves of the last sweet roll. Propelling them on their way with a good departing pat on the fannies, Drake nods to Mother Flaust as she shuffles back in.

She beckons the older orphans together, indicating they should sit down at the table she takes. "You are each very dear to me. Each a star in a bright constellation. But now, young stars, with all these new children, we're severely short of space," she says with a sigh. "Now I hope you don't mind, and please don't take this the wrong way - but I was wondering if you older ones would mind moving across the street? There's a row of old shops - one of which is empty. The landlord said we could use it, well the downstairs part anyway. Someone already lives upstairs, apparently." She glances across the street. The rather run-down patched ediface is a familiar sight to all at the orphanage. "I love you all and I'm not throwing you out. You're more than welcome back here for your meals, and to be wholly honest, I still might need your help with the kids occasionally. Anyway - go take a look, see what you think."

Tiree
Wednesday August 7th, 2002 4:52:59 AM

Tiree waits around for Faust, her feet itching to go outside. When Mama Faust comes back she sits down to listen, but her legs keep jumping slightly. As Faust talks, Tiree nods her head. Looking outside, she gives the familiar building a better look.

Muttering to herself she stares a bit harder and stands up.

"It just might work at that. Y'know Mama Faust, I was thinking the same thing. About us moving out and all. In fact, while I was out, I was going to be looking for places. You've taken care of that for us. Thanks!"

Tiree kisses the older woman on the cheek and grins cheekily at her. "I guess we need to go take a look at it, hmm?"

Her happy feet carry her to the door, where she looks at her new home.

"It looks like it is going to need a lot of work, but I think we can do it. What do you say, guys?" she asks, looking over her shoulder at her family before heading across the street.

Turin
Wednesday August 7th, 2002 2:52:42 PM

Turin looks across the street. "Better than the dump I was living in before I came here. We can work on it."

Jezebella
Wednesday August 7th, 2002 6:38:08 PM

Jez smiles cheerily at Flaust's suggestion. "Anything to help, Momma Flaust, you know that. We'll head over and take a look-see."

With that, the gypsy girl gives Flaust a hug as well, and begins to cross the street to look at what is likely to be her new home.

Ubaerul
Wednesday August 7th, 2002 7:31:48 PM

Giving a sigh of relief, and muttering to himself as to not offend anyone.

"Anything would be better than all the commotion at this place..."

Syr
Thursday August 8th, 2002 3:01:55 AM

Syr looks at Drake in disbelief. Later, when he thinks no one else is watching, he pushes on his eyelids slightly just to make sure they stay in place.

Grinning a mother, "That's great! Maybe I can finally get a room far enough away from Drew's snoring!" Stepping outside he examines the building, "It's not on the Gold level but it's a start! Anyone want to meet our neighbor before we check out the place?"

New digs? DM Kim
Thursday August 8th, 2002 3:44:41 AM

Flaust opens a pouch and removes a skeleton key. "This should get you inside. The landlord told me you can look around." She lays the key on the table for anyone to pick up.

Once across the street, as the key goes in the padlock - someone notes that the padlock is already open. The vacated shop's rickety glass-paned door makes a distinctive squeak-pop as the hinges complain, and the pop came from a rusty door spring - designed to pull closed the door. One of the small glass panes in the door is broken and will need fixing. Inside, everything looks to have been cleared out. There's a large room at the front taking up space widthways across the shop. Behind this there is an internal door and a central passage that leads to an extremely well fortified back door. On the left side of the passage there are two rooms - the first a kitchen with a ramshackle old wood stove which still seems to work, and a bathroom that looks serviceable, but badly in need of cleaning. To the right are two more rooms - both appear empty, perhaps once used for storage. Aside from the door, the only windows in the building are a large one at the front, and two smaller ones facing the back. The one in the bathroom is barred.

There's no sign of the upstairs resident as yet. A tiny door outside at the front, to the right of the shop, seems to be the access to upstairs, and out the back - rickety wooden stairs from the backstreet lead up to a small balcony and a door. Yup. No dearth of rickety on this first tour.

Drew
Thursday August 8th, 2002 3:46:29 PM

"Ummmmm... looks like my old home."

Turin
Thursday August 8th, 2002 8:06:37 PM

Turin looks around, carefully. "A decent enough place. Two rooms that can have bunks put in..." He stops, and does some mental counting. "I think one can be a guy's room, and the other a girl's room. The bathroom's bad, I've seen better kept ones in taverns, but it's nothing some cleaning won't fix." He looks around the front room again. "Heck, if we wanted to start up a business here, we possibly could." He nods to himself, thinking about how he would place things if he were to do it. Not that he's ever done it before...

Tiree  d20+7=26 d20+1=20
Thursday August 8th, 2002 8:31:36 PM

Tiree wanders around their new place. At least that is how she is already thinking of it. She gives it a very close examination (Search 26, Spot 20) as she moves through it, cataloging what she sees and finds and thinking about the cost of fixing the place up.

First 'visitor'. Nesting time. (DM Kim)
Friday August 9th, 2002 3:09:20 AM

Tiree finds in her look-about that there is a little door she can open behind the stove. It reveals a cylindrical metal chimney with a little handle affixed. When she moves the handle, a little puff of wood ash comes out, and it looks black within the small opening.

As the inspection continues, there is a gentle knock at the front door. Mother Flaust stands there. "May I come in?" she inquires with a smile.

After she steps in and looks up and around briefly at the entrance, she says, "Gather round. So it has possibilities, does it not? Well, as I said, it is available. Drew, I had something left outside. Why don't you and the other boys be good and bring it inside."

Outside, they find a heavy oak chest. Though Drew likely could handle it by himself, it is a bit easier with a couple helping on the other end.

"Set it down there," she says, then instructs, "Now, girls, open it up and see what is inside." A latch lifts. Inside is a complete service of china for twelve. Quite nice plates, saucers, cups, bowls, serving dishes, tureens, ceramic tea pots and coffee pots, ceramic ladles. Well, there are twelve of some things. Twelve saucers. Eleven plates. Ten intact cups, and one in which a portion was evidentally glued back together, unevenly. Fourteen bowls, but nine match the rest of the set, and five are from assorted patterns. Chips and nicks abound - but, if you don't get too close, it looks pretty nice. When all is inventoried, you do seem to have four perfect place settings, with hardly a nick or chip among them.

"As I have said, you are welcome to have your meals with us. But you may, on occasion, wish to prepare your own meals, or serve guests. It is part of growing up. Now, I'm sure you can think of many other things you'll need to fix up and furnish this place. Perhaps you can go on an expedition today, and see what things you might find. I know you are resourceful. Good day!"

The group has the opportunity at this point to go out and furnish the place. Might I suggest that each person look to bring back perhaps half a dozen items? What will you sleep on? How will you pay for what you find? Can you scrounge from neighbors, the trash level, the orphanage, in trade for scrubbing pots at the local pub? Wherever and however.

Be as realistic and imaginative as you can. Old chairs, lamps, an antique chest that was found on a back street, a rug, kettle, pots, etc. Have fun!

Kit the place out so it looks cool and how you'd like it. Presume in your next post that you've been out and somehow acquired what you want - post what you obtained and how you got it.

Syr
Friday August 9th, 2002 3:10:10 AM

Syr bounds from room to room quickly, "Well, it's not the Dragon mansion but it's good enough for me. If it's okay with ya'll, I REALLY like the food at the orphange. I won't be eatting here much. Besides, I need an excuse to go pester Drake."

Syr goes to the back door, "I wonder if we have a porch?"

Drew
Friday August 9th, 2002 1:55:24 PM

"Hey Syr, theres still a bunch of useful stuff at my old place.... if we want to go get it. It looks like crap but it works!!!"

Turin
Friday August 9th, 2002 5:27:44 PM

Turin nods to himself. "There are a few beds I can get from where I used to live, it's locked up pretty good, so..." He thinks a bit. "I think we could get some bunks for the bedrooms. I've got two beds, and if we could get two double bunkbeds, we'd be set."

Ubaerul
Saturday August 10th, 2002 6:11:50 PM

Raising one eyebrow in thought, Ubaerul suddenly comes up with an idea.

"Hey everyone, I'm going to go clean out my old apartment on the gold level, I have a bunch of little things we may be able to use. Let's see, I have a bed, a chest of drawers, a chest, a large oil lamp, a mirror, and a painting my former tutor created. I can also stop by Louis's shop and see if he has anything lying around he doesn't need anymore. Also, has anyone thought to check on Helena to see how she's doing? Maybe she'll even have some things lying around her house we might be able to use."

Tiree
Monday August 12th, 2002 12:37:36 AM

After Flaust leaves, Tiree goes back to her discovery. Getting a candle, she lights it and uses it to look inside the opening, cleaning it out as she goes. She is completely oblivious to the dust and ash as it gets on her.

After she finishes with that, Tiree has a better look at the place. Deciding that it needs a good cleaning she makes her way over to Flausts and picks up a few extra cleaning supplies and runs them back over to the new place. She sets them down in the kitchen area and pauses to consider her next move.

When an idea pops into her head, Tiree smiles and heads back out, a wave at those still at the apartment. Heading down to the Trash level, she does her best to stay out of some of the worse areas and away from trouble spots as she makes her way to the boiler room where they met those workers who believed in Valdor and his cause. Hoping that they are working, she stops in to ask them where down there, on the Trash level, would be a good place to scavenge for some furniture. Didn't have to be good stuff, just servicable.

Jezebella
Monday August 12th, 2002 9:34:46 AM

Jez returns to the older orphans new home late that evening, smudged with grime and soot, and carrying a large iron pot. She half staggers in under the weight of it, and sets it down in the small kitchen. The others, alerted to her arrival by the rusty squeal of the door hinges, watch her unload the contents of the pot carefully. On top of the pot, carefully wrapped in a worn floor covering, is a pane of glass to replace the broken one in the door. Under that, she reveals a flask of oil, protected from the rest of the contents of the pot by a thick winter blanket. Under the oil and blanket, is foodstuffs. Flour, dried meat, and sugar.

"I travelled the level, really." She explains. "Everyone here knows Flaust, and the orpanage... the kitchens were happy to help, after I worked a bit." She stretches, and winces as her sore muscles rebel.

Drew
Monday August 12th, 2002 12:18:48 PM

Heads out to his old house and back, coming back with a table, three chairs, a chest, and one over-large easy chair that he clearly loves. It is all mismatched and not pretty but very sturdy and clean.

Turin
Monday August 12th, 2002 2:58:22 PM

Turin asks Drew to help him bring over the beds. If Drew agrees, he brings over two somewhat ratty beds that could be fixed with some skill... of course, the same skill could probably make new better beds.

Decorating 101; New Neighbor (DM Kim)
Tuesday August 13th, 2002 1:14:48 AM

With the beds, furniture, pots, pans, chest of drawers, mirror, blankets, cleaning supplies, and so on, pretty soon the old storefront dwelling begins to take shape. Tiree accidentally knocks a black beetle down into the stove pipe, just as it emerges from the flue. Other than that, soon she determines it is a way to help provide air flow for the exhaust fumes from the stove - itself which begins to look better with a little elbow grease.

Not everything has its place yet, but it is a work in progress. There is still plenty of work to do, things to hang on the walls. The bathroom does not yet pass muster after a first cleaning, but perhaps some more vigorous scrubbing...

As people come into and go out of the youngsters' new 'home', some notice a man occasionally looking out a window directly above the door.

Later in the day, and standing by the narrow front side door, stands the tall young man. His blond hair is tightly pulled back from his high forehead into a pony tail. His gray eyes crinkle up on his clean-shaven face when he smiles as a couple of youngsters navigate a tattered couch through the doorway. "Figuring out how to get things in, eh? You all look like hard workers. Couldn't help but notice. From good woman Flaust's, aren't you all? Welcome. Welcome to the other side of the street," he says. He is clothed in worn, yet well-tailored robes such as scholars wear.

Syr
Tuesday August 13th, 2002 4:37:55 AM

Looking up with his arms covered in dust and dirt, Syr eyes the Stranger. The elf decides to take a break and walks over to meeting the stranger. He holds out a hand in greeting and only then realizes the grime on it. With a quick wipe down on his pants, he holds his hand forth for the stranger to shake, "I'm Syr, you are right. We decided to move out on our own. Is that you we saw in the upstairs window?"

Drew
Tuesday August 13th, 2002 9:14:48 AM

Jezebella
Tuesday August 13th, 2002 5:55:48 PM

The gypsy girl brushes a stray lock of her raven hair away from her face. She smiles to the young man. "Hello! I'm Jezebella." She does a small curtsy, the effect diminished by her current state, covered in hard work dirt. "We noticed you upstairs. We forgot to ask, what exactly you DO upstairs?"

Ubaerul
Wednesday August 14th, 2002 12:05:05 AM

Poking his head out of one of the new bedrooms where he's been storing away some of the stuff he's brought over, Ubaerul welcomes the newcomer.

"Good day, My name is Ubaerul Vestrati. I have just joined up with these people from the orphanage but I'm eager to see more of the city and surrounding areas with them. By any chance have you heard of what is going on outside the city?"

DM Kim
Wednesday August 14th, 2002 6:39:04 AM

The man goes to shake Syr's proferred hand, then laughs as he wipes it off. He shakes. "Pleased to meet you, Syr. Um, yes, I believe that was I. You see, my study is next the window. Occasionally, as I pause to think about what I have read, I find just looking outside to be refreshing, and to give my eyes entertainment as my mind considers things."

He nods to Turin, and gives a bow to Jezebella in return for her curtsy. "Do? Why I eat, read, think, sleep."

Those near the man, roll a spot check, DC 16.

"Yes, good day to you, too, Ubaerul Vestrati. Oh, pardon me. Here so many have given their names. Mine is Torl, at your service."

He considers Ubaerul's question. "Well, that is the question of the day, is it not? I am trying to learn that, myself. The lake we are on seems quite large, and things are warm here. Other than that - well, when I find out more, I may let you know!"

Ubaerul
Wednesday August 14th, 2002 9:15:06 AM

Walking all the way into the room to properly greet Torl.

"Hmm, that's odd... So we must have moved far away from where the Floating City once was. Maybe we can get an idea where we are from the stars in the sky, perhaps we should check next time it gets dark. Also, maybe the Storm Dragons know where we are, if we were to contact them we could find out if they've found anything yet and if they need are help to look around. Hell, maybe we could even find some decent things to take back for the house while looking around."

Tiree moves outside when she hears talking. She can see her family talking to a man. Moving toward them, she takes a good look at him (Spot 18) and listens closely to what he has to say (Sense Motive 22). She doesn't smile at him, neither does frown. Her face is blank, and she doesn't introduce herself, either.

Thursday August 15th, 2002 2:06:20 AM

The elf chuckles at Ubaeral's idea, "Stars? I have enough trouble finding out what street I'm on. It's not for me to tell where dots in the sky are..."

Gazing up he says quietly, "I'm all for going out and exploring this 'new' place. I've had it up to here in cleaning and settling down."

Calling out loud enough to be heard outside the door, "Torl! Any idea where we should start exploring this new ... forest?" Syr utters the word forest with a bit of apprehension. While being an elf, he has spent most of his life on the big float. He grows quiet as he thinks of his lost heritage.

Torl (DM Kim)
Thursday August 15th, 2002 3:33:31 AM

To Turin's surmise that he is a recluse, Torl answers, "A recluse? Oh, perhaps a bit. I get out once in a while though."

"Well, one thing I heard," he answers Ubaerul, "- the forest - though some call it a jungle, has many mysteries. Someone who ventured only two or three minutes on the land spoke of a vine that came to wrap itself around his ankle. He pulled loose, losing only his shoe. If you go to the edge, you can see that the closest part of the forest is only a few hundred yards off. But the lake - no one yet knows how far off the far shore may be - no one can see it!"

Tiree notes at the base of Torl's neck a geometrical weaving of colors and shapes. He gives her a short nod. Regarding motives - she perceives he, at the moment, is simply interested in acquainting himself with the new neighbors. He seems very charming.

"Well, I trust you will make yourselves comfortable. I should not take up more of your time. Oh, and the water of the lake? It is fresh, and very clean. Good day!" He turns to open the door and ascend the stairs.

Friday August 16th, 2002 4:09:34 AM

"My tatoo?" Torl's voice speaks as the door closes slowly behind him. Sounds of footfalls on the steps ascending change to descent. He catches the door just before it closes, sticking his head out. "Oh, that?" he looks around, trying to find Turin's face. "A youthful affectation, I'm afraid." Turning towards Jezebella, he says, "Yes, dear, perhaps you might. But for now, sorry, work presses!" He nods at the stern-visaged Drew, climbs the stairway, and the door closes behind.

Passersby (DM Kim)
Friday August 16th, 2002 4:20:15 AM

Just as the door to the upstairs shuts, a pair of washerwomen, one with a scrub board, the other bearing a large cloth sack that looks to be full of clothing, walk by. The tall one with the board is heard to say, "... be a Mask Day soon. The Overlord hisself is a'comin' down. And not just here, she a-told us, but even to the bo'em. All the way down to the bo'em level. Ooo, heavens ta Salia! By the way, ... -san says, 'If I EVER see ... blew up!! Hee-hee-hee. ... Shirts - too many buttons, I says ..." As she gets farther away, it is harder to pick up what she says.

DM Kim
Monday August 19th, 2002 2:34:29 AM

What with making the rounds of the city, finding furniture and such for the new place, meeting an upstairs neighbor, and having dinner at the orphanage, the day has been largely spent. Through other conversations overheard, it sounds as though the current Overlord is not just visiting, but actually moving to the bottom level of Floating City, and a new Overlord will take his place. There are different theories as to when this should occur.

Others are remarking about how good the water in this new lake tastes. Should it still be called Turtle Lake? Well, the turtles are here, are they not? But it's not the same lake, right? Different names are suggested - Jungle Lake, Big Lake, Tasty Waters, Chimera Sea (who knows where that one came from?) - but the consensus seems muddled somewhere between Turtle Lake and New Turtle Lake. A large, long-snounted fish is paraded through the streets. "The biggest esox masquinongy I've ever caught!" boasts the fellow who hauled it in. "Caught it over the side!" Town guards escort him, and a lieutenant states on every other street corner, "We need not worry about food, people. This is just a sample of the fish caught today!" The sergeant riding herd on the guards looks hard at folk, as though daring anyone to gainsay this sign of hope. Two soldiers share the burden of the 80-pound fish. One of the soldiers looks rather forlorn as he brings up the tail end.

Perhaps the next morning will be a good time to explore the city more, now that the old/new furniture and accoutrements have found a new home. As the youngsters begin to settle in, and figure out who is sleeping where, someone in the group asks, "So, what should we do in the morning?"

In the morning (DM Kim)
Wednesday August 21st, 2002 2:58:31 AM

The young adventurers head after breakfast through the streets, down to the dockside. A few hundred feet from the docks is a boat with several lines hanging off the sides, with morning mists of haze sometimes obscuring the boat.

Concern over food seems to be lessening as people see the good hauls of fish. "I want some fresh onion, though, Molly," says one stocky woman to another. "Where do we get fresh vegetables, when we have no one to trade with?"

Down one dock two men argue, as others stand around listening. It becomes apparent that one man wants to go out in the boat, and the other is steadfastly refusing to allow such.

A few boys weave through the crowds.

The gypsy girl watches the boys that dart and weave through the crowds, keeping a hand on her beltpouch. She knows enough to know these crowds would be prime targets for pickpockets.

She adds her voice to the argument the men are having. "Why shouldn't the boats go out, sir?"

Thursday August 22nd, 2002 12:32:31 PM

A little out of touch with what has been happening lately, Ubaerul brings up the rear to gaze upon the frightened fisherman.

"Hmm, something's fishy here... The lake we're on seems to be very expansive, and as far as we know the jungle is the same. The fish caught here have been extremely large and there seems to be no shortage. It would appear we are on virgin land, I almost wonder if no civilization has grazed this land for years. Not only that, it seems as if the land itself would be keeping people out, if the very plants rally to defend the land, and something has obviously been harrassing the local fisherman something must be out of the ordinary here. Perhaps we should question these fisherman more and then try to figure out what is wrong with the waters and make our way to land. But first remember we should stock up on some food and supplies if we plan to head out into the wilderness."

The man refusing passage appears only lightly distracted by Jezebella's question, with just a flick of his eyes in her direction. Then Turin questions his authority, and he notices for the first time the large fellow looming behind Jezebella.

His face marked by years in the sun, he squints at the small group of youngsters. "Questionin' your elders, eh? I'm the captain of this rig. That's my authority. Cap' Neekle. As I'm tellin' this stubborn ox, here," he says, thrusting his chin toward the broad torsoed man who vainly seeks passage, "twice, yesterday, late in the day, a huge beast ran itself against my ship. Once on the starboard side, pushing us several feet ta port. And the next time along the keel, liftin' us almost inta the air, then droppin' us down. Since then, we got ourselves a few leaks. Nothin' huge, mind ya, but enough to warrant gettin' everything plugged and checked over." He occasionally takes a bit of his brown and gray beard in his mouth, and nibbles on the hair. "He seems ta' think that a few leaks should na stop us from takin' him ta shore. I want ta reinforce everything before I take her out again. Ain't no coward, like he's inferrin'. Just no fool, neither. Waitin' for my turn in drydock."

Sounds of muffled hammering can be heard emanating from within the ship, and sailors starboard empty buckets of water lifted up from belowdecks. As the captain speaks, two men work their way past the group with long planks of wood on their shoulders, climbing the ramp up on to the deck from the dock. A short, stout fellow carries a 10' long, rather thick beam, obviously well burdened by the weight, taking step after ponderous step.

The fellow Syr addressed looks at him. "Huh? Oh, I dunno. Seems safe, mostly. Except. Shh - I wanna hear this," he says of the conversation the captain is having.

Meanwhile, out of the corner of her eye, Jezebella sees a pair of boys, from among those running around, stop and hand something to a man aways off. Is that - ? She thinks for a moment she recognizes the man, but then feels a bit confused, as he disappears into the crowd. The feeling is as when one sees another, recognizing a degree of familiarity, but being not quite able to place the face. The boys, however, look quite a bit alike one another. They, too, head off out of sight.

Jez hesitates. ".. I thought I saw someone I recognized.. but he disappeared into the crowds."

The elf sees the stout man struggling and decides to act. He quickly moves to one end of the board and slowly takes on the weight of the beam. "I hope you don't mind, this log looks quite heavy." Assuming there is no objection, he helps get the beam up the gangplank and onto the deck of the ship. With an explosive exhale, he sets the beam down and straightens up, taking a look around the ship.

Tuesday August 27th, 2002 2:52:34 AM

As Syr moves to take up the burden of the beam, the stout fellow stumbles, falling to one knee as his left arm moves to stop any further forward pitch. "Brace, that you?" a raspy voice spits out from the beam bearer. "Who's the ass behind me? Stib put you up to...?" He manages to turn his head just enough to discern that he has no idea who this person was who just took hold of the beam. "Just cost me..." he sputters.

A sailor up in the rigging laughs as he observes the unfolding scene next to the ship. "Ha! You lost the bet! Lost the bet! Knew you couldn't do it! Ha!"

The stout man sets his end down, with some care. He looks into Syr's face, reading something he didn't, apparently, expect there. "Eh. Tryin' ta help, eh, stranger?" He seems to ignore the taunts coming from the rigging above. His bushy eyebrow raises as big Drew approaches. "Watch out behind ya," he hoarsely whispers to the elf.

Syr stands, for the moment, with a very heavy beam on one shoulder, the opposite end slanting down to the deck.

Capt Neekle (DM Kim)
Tuesday August 27th, 2002 3:16:43 AM

The broad-torsoed man glares at Turin and one or two of his companions. "Wharf rats. Pah!" He pushes his way through those gathered, and turns to shake a finger at the captain. "You had yer chance, Neekle. See if I throw any business your way again. Pah!"

The captain crosses his arms and shakes his head. "Go your way, Meddoc." Meddoc, indeed, turns and goes. And, in a whisper that only Turin and perhaps two or three other bystanders discern, the captain adds, "Idiot."

"Yes, there are other boats that can make shore," Capt Neekle answers Turin after a couple of beats. "There are turtles that can make shore. My ship's draft is too deep to set right on shore. That's what the longboat starboard and the rowboat aft are for. Now, I have work to oversee." He turns toward his ship, and bellows, "MATE! Report to my cabin." He steps around the beam and those gathered around it with nary a glance, briskly ascends the ramp, and heads to the open door in the forecastle. He descends past view. A few moments later, a tall and wirey man follows a member of the bucket brigade from belowdecks, and heads the same direction the captain went, shutting behind him the door.

Syr
Wednesday August 28th, 2002 2:46:58 AM

Overhearing the comments around them, he sputters, "I-I-I'm sorry. I didn't know you had a bet going! You just looked like you needed help!"

Glancing back out of the corner of his eye, "Oh him? that's my brother." Lowering his voice, "If you really want to make some money, bet on him. He's a bit homely but he sure has a strong back!"

DM Kim  d20=1
Wednesday August 28th, 2002 6:01:34 AM

Unfortunately, Turin's question to the captain was addressed to his retreating back, so he does not learn whether Neekle or any of his crew got a good glimpse at the beastie.

"Yer bro -- did you say he's your brother?" the short man asks Syr, with a look of incredulity.

"Ha! He DID need help, pointy ears! Woo-hoo - thanks for helping, chump!" The fellow up in the rigging gets to laughing so hard, he loses his grip for a moment on the ropes, and starts to fall. However, his left leg, wrapped firmly around the meeting of one line with another, halts his momentary descent. With a startled sound, the mocker resumes his laughter, holding his sides, upside down.

"Aw - shaddup, Goss," the short man grumbles, glancing in the direction of the one wrapped in his hilarity. "Sure," he says, turning back to Syr. "You'n yer, yer 'brother' there, can help, I guess. I gets to swab the deck the next three days, it looks like, anyways."

Assuming Drew steps in to help, the beam certainly is manageable by the large family protector. "Yeah - just lay it next the box there," the stout man says, indicating a teak box next to the opening into the hold. You might gauge his age in the mid twenties, though fairly scarred up on the left side of his face. He tells Syr and Drew, "Fedjo's my name. So, whadda you and yer brother call yerselves? You didn't have all the same folks, exactly, now didja?"

Meanwhile, Jezebella looks in vain for the man or two boys. A woman has a stack of large round fruit sitting atop a small, cloth-covered box. "Grapefruit, fresh from just outside Plateau City! Imported this mornin'. Getcher fruit - grapefruit! It's only a silver a fruit. Goin' ta go fast. Grapefruit! One silver!"

Drew
Wednesday August 28th, 2002 12:05:36 PM

Drew helps with the beam and then looks about for a mop and bucket. Silently taking off his shirt people can see a new tatoo on his large arm. It is that of a plain shield and emblazened on that shield is a hand, open, palm out in warning, or maybe as if to hold off the wold. As Drew starts the work of swabbing the deck he is heard to mumble. "To make a man pay a debt for the kind misunderstanding of others is an unrighteous deed."

"Hey. Hey! HEY! That's FEDJO'S job now! First you want to carry his beam - now you want to swab the decks. Fedjo - you gonna honor your bet, or what? You renegin'?"

The man Fedjo referred to as Goss climbs down from the lines above, and, swinging at the last minute, performs a flip in the air, and lands squarely on his feet before Drew. "Mop's for him," he says. "He bet he could bring that beam all by himself from the carpenter to the ship. Well, he almost made it, but there you are. A couple o' do-gooders some along, and figure they'll do wha' he's SUPPOSED to do himself." He stands before Drew, who outweighs him by a factor of two, maybe even three.

A couple of the deckhands who were emptying buckets just now seem to take an interest in the newcomers. They don't gather around, but certainly their attention is not on bailing water.

"Sure, glad ta meet ya," Fedjo answers Syr. "Hitchin' a ride? Gotta wait for drydock, and the Cap's okay. Mebbe I can put in a word for ya. Drew, and Syr, huh?"

As the climber of rigging challenges Drew, Fedjo looks exasperated. "Goss, back off. These fellas are just tryin' ta help, and yer given' 'em lip."

(Tumble 26, Balance 27) then pushes up and flips back onto his feet. "But so am I. Now I agreed to settle this man's wager for my interference, as is my right, it is now my debt, but if you would like to come up with a fair wager for me I'll be happy to consider giving the debt back to him as well as settling one between you and I?"

Goss; Fedjo; and the Crew (DM Kim)
Wednesday September 4th, 2002 3:56:03 AM

Goss watches Drew do his dance. Though at first distain shows on his face, one might note a quick flicker of appreciation as the large half human demonstrates a measure of his own physical prowess.

A crewman calls out, "Bet you can't top that, Gossman!" A few chuckle, but some seem confident in the capabilities of their man. As the sound of banter picks up, Goss holds up a hand. He walks around Drew, sizing him up with an exaggerated swagger.

"ALL RIGHT!" he shouts. "You wanna bet something, eh? Here's the deal. We have someone - eh, Fedjo, you can do it - put two mops in the crows nest." Very slowly, with overly precise diction, he says, "I refer to the man basket overhead, just in case you Float lubbers don't know a crows nest from a beer barrel," and his finger points up to a dark object near the top of the central mast.

Changing to a more casual style of speech, Goss continues. "Each of us gets one of the mops. We get ours wet in the water below, climb back up on deck, and swab a five by five foot square. Hey - Jakers - you be the judge on the swabbin', right?" A medium-set man with a large adam's apple nods agreement. "You don't have enough water to finish - you climb back down for more. Each of us is finished with the swabbin' when Jakers says we're finished. Right?"

Jakers looks at Drew with a quizzical eye, to see if this seems fine.

"Then, I start at the bow, and you start at the stern. I walk on the port side to stern and ring the bell, you on starboard to the bow, and flip the flag. Then you keep going around back to the stern - but on your hands, and I likewise, back to the bow. You ring the bell, I flip the flag, then back to the mops, put yours up in the crows next, then first one down the hold's hole wins. Someone catches you skippin' a part, you do it over. Me too, if I skip somethin'.

"The winner can have the loser do pretty much whatever he wants from the end of the race, round to same time next day."

The crew sounds excited, and bets are given and taken. Some favor their shipmate, but others think that this Drew fellow might have a chance. At least a small one.

As some initial bets are taken, Fedjo quietly says to Drew, "You an' your friends can add your own terms too, if'n you want."

"So, you game, big guy?" Goss asks.

It can not be a helping the little old lady across the road help. These people must REALLY need your help, and you must help them. You may not accept any reward or honor for helping them, you must simply do it and then disappear. You must find these people yourself and discover what they need yourself. No one may help you with this task. If you agree it is yours and yours alone. I will never check on you, nor ask about it. No one will. Only you yourself and the gods will know if you ever completed your task or not. I will keep Fedjo's debt to you and fufill it, as is my right, as well as any I owe you when the bet is done. Agreed?" As Drew speaks his end of the wager the tatoo on his arm almost seems to glow slightly with an inner light and a calm comes over his face. He seems almost to be preaching, if you didn't know better. For the first time since you have met him the half-orc seems at peace.

When Drew responds with his terms of the wager, Syr stares in shock at his brother. "What did...How... I think that is the most I have EVER heard you speak." After the speech, he beguns to wonder how much everyone in the group is changing as they get older.

Goss listens to Drew's proposal. At first he develops a look of distain. He laughs when the helping of an old lady across the street is mentioned. But then he grows more serious. His face begins to lose its color. He stares at the deck as Drew concludes.

Then he runs his fingers through his hair briskly, thrusts out his hand for Drew to shake, and says, "Agreed. Weird request, but I'm not worried. It'll be doing my beckoning. Let's do this!"

Jocko, holding now several pouches, steps forward. He repeats the course of the race. Without further preamble, he says, "Go!"

Goss takes a run and jumps up into the lower rigging. Drew gets off his mark with alacrity. The smaller man knows his way around the ropes, and is first to the crow's nest, retrieving the mop. From the nest, he descends six or eight feet, then tosses the mop overboard - and follows it down as he jumps to the water some forty five feet below. He surfaces, takes the mop handle in his teeth, and climbs over to the side of the ship, grabbing one of the lines hanging overboard.

Drew took longer navigating his way to the crows nest. He did fine - but is well behind as Goss swims toward the ship. However, just as Goss reaches to pull himself over the starboard railing, he slips, drops the mop, and splashes back in the water below. Drew has a chance to catch up.

The crew is shouting. The captain and his mate come up. When the mate says, "Captain on deck!" the captain says, "As you were - continue." His arms behind his back, he watches the foolishness.

[Make three rolls for swabbing the deck. Any roll, modified by dex, less than 11 has Jakers telling you to return the mop to the water. Once you have three rolls of 11 or more, then see how you do on the next leg.

Make two Balance checks of DC 15 to go from stern to bow. If you only attain DC 12 to 14, a successful Tumble check DC 20 will do to allow you to catch yourself before falling off. If you fail, an odd result sends you off the side of the ship, an even onto the deck. You go back to the stern, and start over if you fall.

After you flip the bow flag, then handwalk back to the stern. Balance checks of DC 18 to midships, and DC 20 (the railing is slippery in one section) are needed, and Tumble checks of DC 22 to regain balance without falling. Succeed twice, and ring the bell. We'll see how things are going at that time.

Drew dives fearlessly into the water and being a strong swimmer comes up fast. He swabs the deck well but not as well as the sailors to be sure. But it looks as though he's going to forget a section but then at the last second he sees it and swabs it as well. (16, 12, 5, used hero point 18)

While swabing may not have been his forte these next things are something he loves and excells at. For all his size and strength hes quick and agile. It's amazing to see him fly over this part of the course almost recklessly, but with complete confidence and joy.

Walking on the rail is a piece of cake, and he does so without comment or grimace. (29 NAT 20, and 20) then flipping up on his hands, with all the grace of a cat, he continues. Those of you near him hear him mumble something, it almost sounds like, "Domi be with me," but then he smiles and almost chuckles as he practically runs on his hands across the surface. (29 NAT 20, 22) It's clear that losing this race is not an option for the half orc.

Goss gets to the deck swabbing. He starts out well enough, yet, when almost finished, looks like he missed a spot as his mop begins to dry.

Jakers, about to send Drew over the side, then notes that Goss is having problems, too. A burly man moves to block Jakers' view, as another man sticks his leg out. Jakers takes a tumble, so his ability to judge is impeded.

"Foul! I call Foul!" Jakers exclaims. "Halt while I inspect. Halt, I say!" Jezebella notes that one of the sailors slipped a half bucket of water to Goss, who quickly wets his mop during the commotion. Drew's patch looks great. Jakers allows that the swabbing is passable for both.

Goss gets off to a speedy start along the railings, and from bow to stern is just slightly ahead of Drew, and rings the bell.

On the second half of his circumnavigation of the ship's deck via the rail, Goss runs into trouble. Once he has to start over, having slipped from the railing on to the deck. On his second attempt, at the same spot where he slipped on to the deck, this time he overcompensates, and slips rather inelegantly into the water off starboard, making a spraying splash. He swims back to the boat, and climbs back up - slipping again, and this time catching his foot in the line, from which he ends up dangling, his head a few few above the waterline. His curses rise.

Folks on the docks nearby have gathered to try to figure out what all the shouting and shipboard hubbub is about.

Drew, having completed the rail walking in style, heads toward the mops. The big fellow - dirty yellow hair, and a long drooping mustache with dense facial stubble - who earlier blocked Jakers' view, smiles, as he tosses both mops overboard. "All right, fella, getcher mop and stick it in the crows nest." Several sailors laugh at this move.

Roll for diving (DC 15 for a good clean dive, DC 10 gets you there, but slower), retrieving the mop (DC 9), climbing back on board (DC 15), and climbing to the crows nest (unannounced DC).

Goss gets himself untangled, and starts to climb back up - just as he notices the two mops flying into the drink. He gets to the top, and dives back in - only to again have problems getting up the side of the ship.

Those who bet on Goss are trying to figure ways to cut their losses. Turin senses a strong smell of warm grease coming from a metal pot one sailor has just brought up from belowdecks. He begins to climb the starboard rigging.

Drew never hesitates and dives over the edge of the boat right after the mop. Expecting some kind of treachery or other he is diving even before the mop hits the water. (DC 15 : Tumble 27 Unmod roll of 18)

He comes up under the mop easily being a fair swimmer. (DC 9 : Swim 21 Unmod roll of 14)

He scrambles up the side of the boat like a spider. (DC 15 : Climb 27 Unmod roll of 16)

Then up to the Crows nest as if he had lived on a boat all his life. (DC Unknown : Climb 30 Unmod roll of 19)

Goss - who, despite the spate of bad luck he seems to be having in this contest - does in general move quickly and gracefully. He kicks over the side with the mop handle in his teeth. Skipping over the requirement to handwalk the railing, he immediately jumps and grabs line beneath the boom, and swings up and over the boom, from whence he begins climbing like a monkey.

The man whom Syr tries to assist into the water does not seem too movable to the elf. He turns his craggy visage down toward him. "Nope. You can, though." [Opposed strength check on grapple, 19+5=24.] His knees quickly bend, and his powerful hand, grabbing the back of the elf's belt, assists Syrdeth's body to prescribe a parabolic arc over the railing on its way to the water. [Roll dex check or swim skill check DC 13 to avoid 1 hp damage on striking the water.]

Meanwhile, as Drew briskly climbs, a voice below says, "Don't do it, Spooker!" - yet the bent-nosed crewman with the pot of grease pours it down on the rigging the powerfully-built half orc ascends. The strength of his arms and general dexterity keep him from being thwarted by this (good time for DC 30 roll) - but the hot grease burns Drew's left forearm (3 hp damage), as the crewman tosses the pot down on some netting below and scurries off to the side to avoid the climbing contestant.

Turin notices the mustachioed fellow with the wavy brown hair watching the proceedings. He looks somewhat perturbed. Noticing Turin glancing his way, the man with whom he bet shrugs, and gives him a wink, as though he were saying, 'Well, boys'll have their fun.'

Drew arrives at the crows nest when Goss is a scant four feet below him. The crewman arrives, places the mop, and says, "First one to the hold, half-breed."

[Drew has the occasion for an attack of opportunity as Goss arrives and turns to jump, should he wish to attempt such. If he does not do so, or fails in his attempt (Goss has AC 16), then...]

He pushes off, and dives through the air. Twelve feet from the deck his arms reach out, and he grasps a loop of rope, swings out, back, then drops to the deck.

"Hey, walk the railing!" one crewman yells. One shorter man moves toward Goss, but slips on the swabbed area, falling on his keister. Isn't that Fedjo? Others say, "Go, Gossman, go!"

Several more passersby have gathered on the docks, and some have climbed the ramp to watch what all the shouting and yelling is about. Jezebella notices among them one of the boys she saw earlier.

The captain and first mate watch what is going on. Following a quiet word from the captain, the mate moves toward the gathering crowd. "No further than the railing, folks." He holds out his arms wide, serving as a barrier, and helping to keep the ship from listing further to port.

He ignores the scald on his arm but memorizes the face of the man who burned him. He leaps out into space and grabs ahold of a rope at the last minute and then flips over in the air and drops into the hold.

Had the first mate not shooed a few spectators off the deck, and the list to port not lessened ever so slightly, Drew should have hit the deck, and that hard. A collective sharp intake, then release of breath comes from those who see this amazing move...

Syrdeth's swim
Syrdeth finds himself in the water just off port. He sees a half-eaten apple floating by. Make a swim check, DC 8, to get back to the side of the boat, where ropes are available for climbing - or DC 10 to swim around to the dock (there are ladders about every twenty feet from the water up on to the docks). As he works to get himself out of the water (one way or another), at one point he feels, somehow senses, something that puts him on the edge of a headache. It comes quickly, though, and passes quickly away.

Jezebella & the boy, part the first
Jezebella notices the boy, who now is on the outside of the railing, hanging on, his feet sticking through the bottom opening of said railing, as he moves his head from side to side to see around a person standing on deck in front of him.

Back to the race
Meanwhile, Goss has a slight lead. He vaults a small barrel that rolled across his path, skids to make the left turn to the ladder to the hold.

As there is a bit of ground, or rather, deck, to cover to get from the landing place to the opening in the hold, Drew's leap out takes him to a raised area, which he bounds across. As he leaps through the air into the hold, that moment Goss hops on to the ladder.

Their bodies collide, and the two descend, gravity- and momentum-assisted, entwined, to the landing beneath the deck. [Drew, take 6 hp falling damage, or half that with a reflex save, DC 20.]

The two end up side by side on the wet landing, looking upward.

A face peers over the edge. "It's a tie!" he says. More faces join his. "No, Goss won." "Not on your life. Goss never walked the other rail." "The big guy won!" "What's his name?" "Grue." "Groo?" "Groo won! Three cheers for Groo! Hip hip hur-" "No, Drew. His name is..." "No, t'aint 'Groo.' It's Blue." "Blue, eh?" "Yay for Blue!" "No, Goss didn't lose. It's a tie. All bets are off!"

Now there is just a good deal of shouting, so that it's hard to make out just who is saying what.

Goss rubs the ribs along his left side. Lieing there on the floor for a moment, he turns his head to the left to look at Drew. One corner of his mouth turns up. "Nice race. I like a good race." He leans over, gingerly, on his left. And offers his hand to his opponent. "I think you won, mister."

There is a good deal of arguing and haggling, but in the end, it is agreed that since Gossman skipped the hand-walking portion of the race, that Drew (who is also called Lew, Shoe, Dew, and Clew by various people) is the winner. One or two who bet on Gossman look rather sullen.

Turin collects
But Turin's bettor rather graciously concedes. "Mebbe you can let me win some of that back at a game of cards tonight," he says with a wink. Jocko gives him his winnings.

Jezebella and the boy(s), part the second
The boy along the railing eventually notices Jezebella looking at him. He looks over his shoulder, just to be sure she's not looking at someone else - unlikely, since such a person would have to be floating or flying. He gulps - then she notes he gets a momentary far-away look in his eye. In a moment, he shakes his head as though to clear it, sidesteps to the crowded ramp, and takes a skipping two-step bound along the edge, down onto a narrow spot between an old timer with a pipe and a large man, bald, but with long bushy red sideburns which join with a large handlebar moustache. Jezebella finds herself just momentarily distracted by this fellow. Thick curly red hair covers his broad bare chest and thick arms. He wears nothing but a worn old leather waistcoat, a pair of tatty old pants and big hobnail boots. His eyes dance with keen interest in the goings-on, and he glances at the boy who just brushed by him with some amusement.

The boy squeezes past these two men, and makes his way fairly nimbly through the people, whose numbers thin once he gets thirty or forty feet from the ramp. Jezebella notes he joins up with another boy, who looks much like him. They run up towards Sailor's Fork. Just before they are out of sight, a man with a ponytail holds out his hand. Each boy hands him something. Pouches? Then they disappear around the corner.

Jezebella's observation of the man is hindered by the fact he went around a distant corner just after receiving the offerings by the boys. However, something clicks in her memory. The man with the red sideburns used to be at Mama Flaust's orphanage. He worked mainly with the little children, but she recalls he was a kindly man. Gordo? Was that... yes, definitely, his name is Gordo.

Tuesday September 17th, 2002 5:26:57 PM

The big man watches events with an easy grin, clearly amused by the hustle and bustle of city life, and in particular by the elaborate wager that has just concluded aboard the ship.

Looking around he spots a girl he is sure he recognizes; yes, it is her! Older to be sure, but unmistakably young Jezebella from Mama Flaust's! He is about to wave a friendly greeting when he realises that she is not looking at him. Following her gaze he is too late to avoid the urchin who pushes roughly past him.

He grins as the young lad tears off up the street. Ah, the urgency of youth! Then he remembers something else about the youth of the Big Float, and he quickly checks his pockets, ensuring his pouch is still in place. As he does so he spots the lad, and another besides, handing an older fellow something that looks remarkably like a couple of pouches... (Spot 23, nat 20)

With a sinking feeling he checks his belongings more urgently, as he turns towards where the three vanished.

Drew makes the reflex save, but then when he sees that the other man may be hurt in the fall he twists himself under Goss so as to cushion the man's fall, taking the full damage and some onto himself. When Goss offers his hand Drew shakes it gladly. "You are quick and agile, as I said, but so am I." With that he smiles and his ugly face is lit up with joy. "I see there are many that wagered on you or I but our bet was between us, and I leave you with your debt. It is yours alone now to do with as you wish. I believe that you are a noble man and gracious in defeat as well as victory and I believe you will fulfill it completely. May your debt bring you great joy. You may find Domi has something great in store for you." With that he climbs up out of the hold and gathers his equipment, axe and armor. Then looks about for members of his family. It is still seems as if his tatoo is glowing slightly.

Tucking before hitting the water, Syr takes no damage (12). Coming up and glaring at the head of the person who bested him, he slowly swims back to the side of the ship. As he reaches for one of the dangling ropes, his face bunches up and eyes squint from the quick pain. He again takes a hold of the rope and makes his way back on deck. After just to pulls, his wet hands slip on the rope and he falls back down. Spitting up water, he steels himself and blows on his hands quickly to dry to dry them and get more grip. This time the going is much easier and he easily springs onto the deck. (How many times is a natural 1 followed by a natural 20?)

Arriving on deck after the race is concluded, he moves over to Drew to check his burned arms. "Groo? I'm definitely going to remember that one." Looking around for the rest of his family he tells them, "I think we need to get these burns looked at, any ideas?"

The gypsy girl frowns in the direction the now confirmed pickpockets went. She hesitates before following... a snoop could easily be clubbed, especially by superior numbers. She moves to her friends, and motions for Gordo to join them.

"Nicely done, Drew... are you hurt to badly? They didn't play too fairly. By the way, everyone, check your moneypouches. There was a team working this area... I saw in general where they went, if we wish to pursue." She shoots Gordo a questioning glance. "Everyone remembers Gordo, I trust?"

Drew shrugs at Jez and blushes slightly. "It is no big deal, the burns are nothing. However if anyone sees the sailor who poured the oil he and I should have words before we leave." Anger creeps back into his eyes. Perhaps it wouldn't be such a good idea for the half orc and the sailor to "have words". After Jez's warning Drew checks his pockets.

On deck
Gossman, on deck, tells Fedjo. "All right, first thing I'm doin' is - Spooker does your swabbin' tomorrow - someone get him, and Big Hill the next day," he says, his head indicating the large fellow who tossed the mops - and Syrdeth - into the water. "I'll do the rest of it today. Your new friend here got you off the hook, so you'd better thank him, I'd say."

Spooker was hiding around the netting, but Big Hill finds him and carries him under his arm over to Goss. "Here," is all the huge man says. Spooker looks uncomfortable as he is set down on his feet.

Capt Neekle walks forward. "So, Mr. Gossman, have you done giving orders yet?"

Goss looks at the captain, at first showing a charming smile, but then, the athletic crewman's face grows serious, and he looks down. "Aye, sir, Captain, sir." He looks up and salutes. "Aye."

"Very well. I'll not countermand yours on this occasion," the captain answers wryly. "Just add to them. I have heard the terms of your ... arrangement. Carry out your work today. Tomorrow morning, Gossman, from sunrise, take the day to begin to pay your debt to your opponent. You'll be back by sunrise the next day, or you'll peel eels' backs for a week. Dismissed."

"Aye Captain. Thank you, sir," Gossman replies, again saluting. He winks at Drew. "See ya around, champ." He climbs to the crows nest and recovers the mops, then goes about his work.

"Not you, Spooker," growls the captain as the crewman tries to sidle off. "Boil water, and clean that blasted grease off the deck and the lines. After that it's net repair. Next you get to clean the galley with a small brush. Hop to it, you dishonorable cur!" Drew recognizes Spooker as the one who poured the grease on him.

The first mate, adjacent the Captain, takes one menacing step toward Spooker, who cowers and backs off, then scurries to the hold.

"Hill - can't you find something to do with that muscle of yours? I want you below in ten minutes to help place that beam. Mate - take over, and get this motley crew back to work."

Big Hill says, "Aye, Captain." Since he has a few minutes before he needs to start work, the large man approaches Syr. "Nice try, elf," his voice rumbles. "Not many men try knockin' me over. The water tastes good, don't it?"

As a matter of fact, Syr did find the water very potable - some of the best he's had - despite some of the flotsam in the lake. Hill's face is a little hard to read. But it seems he holds no grudge, nor expects any towards him.

The mate issues staccato orders, and the crew hop to it, resuming the bailing of water at double speed.

The captain approaches Drew. "I have a fine crew, on the whole. A couple of bad apples, but most of them good men. If you ever need some work, let me know. You look like you're good at protecting your friends. I like that in a man. Good day."

Fedjo hands Syrdeth an off-white, flat round object. "A star stone," he tells him. "I found it by the sea last year." Fedjo also shakes Drew's hand. "Thanks, mister. I don't always find someone to stand up for me. Anything I can do fer you or your friends, just ask." He hands him a little jar. "Rub that on the arm, there. Should help." [This smelly unguent will heal 1d4 points of burn damage.]

Those spectators who have not moved on of their own accord are shooed away, as a crewman reports more water was taken on when the boat listed.

On the docks
Well, Gordo does find a pouch missing - the string cut. The very pouch he had been given to pass on. His own funds are intact. Because he was on the dock, rather than up on the deck, it was a bit harder to follow the boy's movement away - but he did see the handoff of some pouches up the street.

No one else in the party seems to be missing anything.

Those who have been with Mama Flaust for more than a year and a half or two will remember Gordo. He used to help her out, and was real good at working with the younger children. He used to toss them in the air, and roll them over his shoulders in an acrobatic fashion. They would ask to him to 'Do it again!' 'Once more, or twice more?' he would ask. 'Sixty zillion times more!' His deep laugh would sometimes fill the room.

His clothing is much more worn since last the orphans saw him.

Gordo  d20+3=14
Thursday September 19th, 2002 9:02:19 AM

Standing amidst the crowd on the dock Gordo's fingers scrabble vainly at the place where the pouch should be.

Pointing at the spot where the pony-tailed man vanished along with his two young proteges, he begins to run. "STOP THIEF!!" Bellows the big man, in a voice like amplified thunder. "That pouch is the property of Mama Flaust! You steal food from the mouths of orphans! Return it this instant, and save yourselves a thwacking!"

He races up to the corner, and looks around desperately for the fleeing cutpurses (Spot 14).

Thursday September 19th, 2002 9:23:46 AM

Drew thanks the captain and blushes slightly at the compliment. He graciously takes the gift of the ointment but he puts it away and does not use it. It may come in handy sometime for someone else. Then, not knowing what else to do, he takes his axe out and oils the handle. When he sees the man Spooker his eyes seem to fill with anger, but he sits quietly and says nothing.

Syr stares up at the big man and says, "Yup, you got me that time, some other day I'd like to try again."

Moving off near Jezebella he hands her the star stone, "Any idea what this is? It looks great for skipping across the water."

Seeing Gordo the elf welcomes him with a big smile, "Hey! Where have you been lately? You wouldn't believe the stories we have since you last stopped by!" Nudging Jez and softly speaking for her ears, "umm, I think only you and I remember him. No one else was at the house."

Jezebella shrugs. "Not sure, Syr... might want to get it appraised before you toss it in the lake though." She grins.

When Syr points out that the others might not remember Gordo, she gets a faraway look. "Has it been so long?" She says softly. Louder, she says, "Well, we best help him, before he gets himself into trouble."

She chases after Gordo, all hope for subtlety lost by his cries.

Star stone
Examining the star stone more closely, Syr and Jez see that there is a five-petaled flower, or star, etched in tiny holes along the surface of the three-inch wide disk. Where the petals meet is a little hole. The surface is somewhat smooth. The bottom, of rougher texture, is ever-so-slightly concave, and on it five more or less evenly spaced lines go from the edge to the center. The top, with the petal image, is convex. It seems to be somewhat fragile - it lacks the mass of a normal stone that size. When shaken, a little rattling can be heard inside.

Up the street
As Gordo runs swiftly up the street, people move out of his way as he bellows his commands and remonstrations.

Arriving at the place he saw the transaction occur, he does not see the brown-haired man.

It takes Jezebella a little longer to reach the place, but she and Drew reach the place on Sailor's Fork where last she saw the boys and man less than a minute after Gordo arrives.

They see many people. Shops - Ilthelio's Exchange stands next to Brody's Honest Banking ('Little cash on premises' declares a small sign under the larger. In front of Leila's Delights stand a pair of alluring ladies in light and slinky garb, beckoning to some of the sailors who pass by. Across the street Fresh and Dried Fruits and Vegetables displays what look like dried apricots and next to them a few select red apples. A stout man with an apron stands guard next his edible wares, affable grin and sharp eyes looking for people to enjoy what he has to offer - as long as they pay for the privilege. An open door behind him promises a wider selection.

A juggler walks down the street, keeping four scarves fluttering up then floating down in a continuous cycle. A little white and brown bug-eyed dog stays close to his left heel, alert to and mindful of where other pedestrians trod nearby him. Adjacent a building wall a town guard is bent down, talking to a little girl, perhaps three or four years old, whose eyes are filled with tears. He speaks gently to her. "What color clothes is your mommy wearing today?"

His quarry vanished the big man skids to a halt. He gazes desperately around, hoping against hope that he has not lost the pouch for good.

He sees no-one, however, and is at something of a loss what to do next...

Then Jez and Drew arrive at speed, and he greets them with a rueful grin.

"Ah, young ones, it is good to see you after all this time." He looks Drew up and down, and laughs; "Or maybe not so young! You've grown, both of you! I only wish our meeting was under happier circumstances. I was returning to the orphanage with a bag of gems, having been teleported back here from Plateau City... well, it's a long story, but the short and the tall of it is I had a bag of gems for Mama Flaust, and now, thanks to those young tearaways, I don't. I can't tell you how sorry I am. I know Mama Flaust needs every copper bit she can get."

The big man looks out of breath at this lengthy speech, and somewhat shameface at the way he allowed the spectacle to distract him from his duty.

Following the others he looks around at the shops, "If I were to lift something like that I would need a place to sell it ... quick." He nods his head towards the Exchange. "At the very least, they might know of another place that would take the pouch. Think we might be able to get some information in there, Gordo?"

Showing the star stone to Turin, "Dunno, it's interesting to look at though, think it's valuable?"

Syr looks around and scratches his head, "Where's Ubaerul?"

Ubaerul has not been seen since just before kind Syr caused poor Fedjo to lose his bet with the tweaky Gossman. Maybe he is out shopping or sightseeing.

Ilthelio's Exchange
The exchange stands nearby. A neatly lettered sign above what appears to be a closed wooden window states:
Small exchanges at this window
Knock two times for this window
Knock three times for other matters inside

Just as Drew draws near, a small window within the wooden 'window' opens, and a face appears. A pinch-cheeked man with a nasal voice asks, "Yes? You wish to make an exchange?"

Star stone
Perhaps Syr can ask about the star stone at the exchange. Turin sees the off-white almost flat round disk, and can make out the details described earlier.

Other exchanges on this busy street
The city guard asks, "May I pick you up so you can see over the big people? You tell me if you see your mommy." The little girl at first shakes her head, shyly, in negation of this suggestion. But she reconsiders, deciding he looks trustworthy, and jumps up to the kneeling man, wrapping her arms around her neck. He then walks forward, turning this way and that, and quietly asking the girl other questions.

The big man smiles at Drew's direct approach, and and says to the man at the window "Or perhaps you yourself may have seen the fellow we seek." Gordo describes the ponytailed man as well as he is able.

"Of course we would be willing to pay for any information that turned out to be valuable."

Drew notes the fellow behind the window is walleyed. He blinks at the half-orc's question. "A fence?" He blinks again. "I don't exactly know, uh, sir. I suppose he could find difference places and people here, or even a level up or down, if he wants - did you get a good look at him? Not everyone is as honest as we are, sir. Just a moment." He shuts the window. Drew hears the man shouting - although his voice is muffled by the barrier. "Say, ... 'Thelio ... a fence?" Another half minute of conversation takes place. Then the door opens. A man who looks to be in his mid fifties beckons the group in. He has a salt-and-pepper beard, wears spectacles that rest on the bridge of his nose, and has a well-fed stomach. With a jolly manner, he welcomes the group in. "A bit tight quarters here out front. Sorry 'bout that. Some things are best discussed in private, don't you agree? I am Ilthelio. This is my good man Roterb," he indicates the wall-eyed fellow.

"There are fences all over the place here. This is not called the Fence level for nothing, you know. Now, gems - I'll tell you what - go ahead and describe the gems for me, as best you can. I can make some discreet inquiries. If I get wind of their location, perhaps I can let you know. Not to put too fine an edge on it - should I learn of something, a finder's fee is customary. Generally 10% is the accepted rate. Some ask for more, but not us. Of course, if we find nothing, you pay nothing more that the standard ten gold - nonrefundable, of course - to initiate our research.

"Now, did you get a good look at the person, or persons, who nabbed the gems?" he asks affably.

Turin
Thursday September 26th, 2002 9:36:55 PM

Turin, coming along and listening, thinks a bit. "What's to keep you from just keeping our ten gold and pocketing the gems if you find them? I mean, no offense, but surely you understand our position." He smiles. "I've seen enough crooked games to know to avoid them."

Syr
Friday September 27th, 2002 3:26:53 AM

Syr elbows Turin and whispers loud enough to be heard, "psst, I think he means 10% IF he finds something!"

Catching the eye of Ilthelio he flashes the star stone, "Hmm, rather than 10 gold how about we give you this and you pay us a bit extra? What do you think would be fair?"

Ilthelio (DM Kim)
Friday September 27th, 2002 5:49:51 AM

"Why, our reputation, young sir, and our integrity," Ilthelio answers Turin. "And our desire for future business. You see, you pay me the gold for this service, and we have a contract. I avoid breaking my contracts."

"Yes, yes, of course," he agrees with Syr's whisper. Looking at the star stone, Ilthelio sets it down on a black velvet cloth on a low counter, asks Roterb for the looking glass, and sits himself down on a small stool. With the round, doubly convex lens, he peers at the stone, turns it over carefully, runs his fingers over the surface, then tells Syr, "I'd give you five gold for the novelty of it in these parts." Then he laughs. "Well, where ever 'these parts' are, now!"

"Good elf, what you have here are the woldian remains of a spiney sea creature. When it dies, the spines fall off, leaving its hard inner body. Maybe you can get more for it elsewhere. Find a collector, or something. Tell you what, I'll give you seven gold for it. Might be able to turn a small profit, if I take my time, ask around. It's called a sand star by some, a sand flower by others. When it's alive, it's a sea urchin."

Drew
Friday September 27th, 2002 9:19:52 AM

Drew pulls out 20 gold and lays it on the table. "The gems were to help feed Mother Flaust's orphans. My brothers and sisters. Here is 20 gold to start you looking and hoping that that you will look twice as hard as normal. My brother here has given you a description of the boys, perhaps someone else can give you a description of the gems. My brothers and sisters in Mothers Flaust's care are helpless and I will protect them. I will pay you even more to know who stole them. I will not kill them but they do need to learn a valuable lesson about preying on the weak." Drew's arms and jaw have begun to tense up and his eyes burn like red coals. His tatoo again seems to blush a dark red as if the blood in his body were rushing there.

Turin

Turin nods. "That's good enough."

Jezebella

Jezebella hangs near the entrance of the shop... glancing outside as if looking for something, or someone.

Ilthelio - DM Kim  13d20(12+17+9+18+14+19+18+11+5+20+16+18+5)=182
Saturday September 28th, 2002 3:40:45 AM

"Agreed!" Ilthelio says heartily. "That is, I agree wholeheartedly to do what I may to track down the gems on your behalf. No guarantees, mind you," he says, eyeing the pulsing tatoo Drew wears for a moment. "Few enough things in this life are certainties. But we shall exercise due diligence on your behalf. Should we track them down, it may be that I learn who took the items. It may also occur that I find the gems, but not know all details of the route they took. And, what is often the case with gems - some may be found, and some lost to you forever. But, let us get to it! First - please describe the purloined stones with as much accuracy as possible." Should Gordo tell him anything, he will jot down notes, ask questions about color and cut and lustre, showing off a few sample gems to see whether he can help jog the man's memory. "Like this one, or more like this other?" Gordo's recollection on some stones is sharper than on others.

As the query-response continues, he hands the star stone back to Syr. At last Ilthelio turns to his wall-eyed assistant. "Roterb, go check with Danil, give him a description of the stones, and ask him to keep his eye out."

Roterb sighs, takes a light coat hanging on a rack in the corner, and squeezes his way past the group in this crowded exchange shop.

On the streets, Jezebella sees the city guard carrying the little girl on his left shoulder up the street. She turns her head from side to side.

A stocky lady waddles out of the fruits and vegetables shop. The owner helps her adjust one of her two large and stained cloth bags.

A handsome elf across the street glances Jez's direction briefly, then looks away, appearing preoccupied in his thoughts. He steps into the grocer's.

Gordo (eventually)
Saturday September 28th, 2002 6:50:12 AM

Gordo watches the young orphans with a mixture of pride and compassion. So young, and yet so grown up, so sure of themselves. Mama Flaust has done good work with these youngsters, who have suffered such tragedy and hardship in their short lives. So easily their experiences could have scarred them, turned them bad. But with the love and care offered by the orphanage they have grown straight and true, and they make him proud to be a part of the orphanage.

So lost in thought is the big man that he barely registers Drew handing over the gold. Ilthelio's questions bring him back to the present with a jump.

"Eh? What's that? The gems? Well now, let me think..." Gordo describes the collection of one diamond, one ruby, three sapphires, a nicely cut tourmaline, three fine quartz crystals, one piece of amber with a beetle inside, and three pearls as best he is able.

As Ilthelio scribbles down the details, Gordo reaches into his purse and hands 20 pieces of gold to Drew. "My thanks, lad, but it was my slow-wittedness that lost me the gems, and the debt is mine. But your help in tracking down those two wayward children and showing them the error of their ways is most welcome. Just remember, they are young and no doubt disadvantaged. It may be that they are little more than victims of that man with the ponytail. Him I would very much like to meet."

Though Gordo still smiles, there is a hardness in his eyes at these final words.

Drew
Saturday September 28th, 2002 4:17:18 PM

Drew shakes his head at the offer to repay the 20 gold. "Thank you sir but he offered to do it for 10 and I have paid more. If you wish to buy my brothers and sisters a bite later, then feel free, but please keep your money."

A helpful elf?
Sunday September 29th, 2002 12:22:04 AM

The elf who glanced Jezebella's way pays the grocer something, and in a moment is eating what looks to be a nice, juicy pear. Once done, he tosses the stem into one of the little piles of trash beside the street that people use, and that cleaning crews occasionally sweep up. He adjusts his wide-brimmed hat, then wanders across the street.

"Excuse me," he says softly to Jezebella, loud enough for Syr to hear, as well. "I couldn't help but overhearing and wondering if I could help." The handsome elf flashes a helpful smile, his youthful dark eyes looking at the gypsy and the elf in a kindly, meek way. "I saw a man in a gray robe meet two scamps over there," he points to the middle of the street, "and then run off... dropping this." He pulls out a blue transparent gem with an agile twist of his fingers. A sparkle from it lights up Jezebella's face.

Gordo
Sunday September 29th, 2002 5:55:49 AM

"By the Holy Deeds of Domi, that is one of the gems that I had stolen!" cries Gordo, after peering closely at the bauble in Jezebella's hand. "Please kind sir, did you see which way they went?"

Turin
Sunday September 29th, 2002 3:43:33 PM

Turin looks at the elf. "Where? We can try to track them."

Jezebella
Sunday September 29th, 2002 5:09:00 PM

Jez looks at the gem in the man's hand. "If that truly is one of the stolen gems, we would greatly appreciate its return." She smiles to the young man, and continues. "It's good to meet an honest man... such a rarity it seems, sometimes."

Mr. Elf
Sunday September 29th, 2002 6:54:26 PM

"I'm afraid it'd be hard to track them down; the gray robed man just went wandering that way," and he indicates the left tine of Sailor's Fork, "and I lost him...but I overheard the two youths who handed him the gems say something about going somewhere exciting." He arches his eyebrow. "I'm glad to donate this back if it involves stolen property, but if I can aid in apprehending these miscreants, I'd be delighted." He leaves the offer open, hoping they accept.

Syr
Monday September 30th, 2002 3:45:03 AM

The elf's ears perk at the mention of food but he slowly shakes his head and focuses on the business at hand.

As the other elf wanders over, he moves closer to Jez protectively. After hearing his speech and seeing the gem a large smile splits his face. "Great news indeed, you are most certainly welcome to aid. You honesty in returning the gem has earned that at least." In a faked whisper, "And the fact that you are the only person who saw this grey robed man certainly has nothing to do with it."

The small elf flicks his black ponytail back and holds out a hand for the stranger to take, "I'm Syrdeth but most shorten it a bit."

(OOC: Welcome aboard, Mikey. It's good to have another elf! On another note, I'm going to be visiting London for 10 days in a couple weeks, any volunteers to keep Syr alive?)

Ilthelio - DM Kim
Tuesday October 1st, 2002 1:42:15 AM

Not content to remain in the shop when overhearing the news of the discovered gem right at the doorway, Ilthelio, taller than some here, looks over Syr's shoulder at the stone the other elf holds. "Ah - a sapphire. May I see it more closely? Looks like it's a tad over two carets." He asks Gordo, "The other two - were they matched in size and cut?"

To which Gordo replies, "Well, I suppose so. They sort of seemed alike."

Should the newly arrived elf let him, Ilthelio examines the stone. "Oh," he says, as he looks under a lens. He takes a black cloth cover off the end of a black tube. From the tube shines a bright light, focused on the gem. "A purple blue sapphire it is. Yes. Lovely. Lovely. Good lines. Fine princess cut. Heat treated. Not an absolutely perfect stone, but very nice, nonetheless." After a moment, he looks up. "I wager it was mined near the junction of the Red Hills and the Scab. Some fine sapphires and other gems used to come from that area, back when it was safer to mine. Now, that gem by itself might fetch you six fifty, maybe even seven hundred gold pieces. If it has two sisters, then the trio could bring in more together than each separately." He hands the sapphire back to the elf. "Yes, so, tell me any details about the man you saw." He pauses, waiting for whatever Tionel may tell him, and nods his head.

"You can believe I will do what I can, good lady, good sirs. Now, if you'll excuse me - where can I reach you? Or, if you'd just prefer to check back later. Of course, can't promise anything." He steps through a back door for about half a minute, and comes back out wearing a different shirt, and huffing and puffing a bit. He shoos any who remain in his shop out, and hangs a 'Do not disturb' sign on the door. His shirttail hangs out in back. Someone may wish to answer Ilthelio's question before he goes off to do whatever it is he plans to do. As an afterthought, as he walks away, he tucks in the back of his shirt.

Meanwhile, it's been about fifteen minutes since the boys were last seen.

If you would like to see what the sapphire looks like, go to http://www.simplysapphires.com/purplepns219.htm

Tionel  d20+8=21
Tuesday October 1st, 2002 2:47:55 AM

The elf gladly lets the artisan study the pretty gem while he describes the man's physical features...though, unfortunately, they weren't that remarkable. The two kids stick out, as they both looked alike and definitely seemed like troublemakers. His description of them seems quite vivid... "...and, how rude of me not to introduce myself. My name is Tionel Galonadel, entertainer and druid. I'll be glad to help you however I can, but I'm afraid I'm not the shining knight in armor type. My skills are a bit more mundane, and lie closer to the natural state of mankind..."

At this point, the broker gives his examination and finishes it with a toss of the sapphire. Tionel catches it deftly and, with such skill that it almost seems lazy, tosses it, along with another crystal of some kind, and then an unsheathed dagger, and juggles the three a toss or so. While juggling the dagger and what appears to be a crystal bird in one hand, he gives the sapphire to the half-orc, who probably is waiting for it impatiently.

Gordo  d20=20
Tuesday October 1st, 2002 9:30:46 AM

Gordo thanks the newcomer, Ilthelio and his newfound companions profusely.

"Your help touches me deeply," he rumbles in a deep baritone, eyes misting up. "Thank you, all of you." Standing there at well over six foot, broad of shoulder and hairy of body, he looks like a huge, happy bear.

He shakes Tionel's hand warmly, saying, "A pleasure to meet you, son. The name's Gordo. Used to work at Mama Flaust's orphanage a year or so back (That's where you can contact me, Ilthelio, if you have any news), and that's where I first met some of these wee reprobates!" He hugs any of the orphans who are unlucky enough to wander into range, beaming with pleasure at this turn of events.

"Truly it is said that Blessed are one's troubles! Had I not had that pouch stolen, this happy meeting may never have occurred!"

"That said, I think it might not hurt to try and track down those two young scamps. Tionel, you said they were talking about somewhere exciting? Did you hear any other details? And the rest of you, where would you think was exciting, if you were those two lads?"

The big man scratches his shaved head, twirls his whiskers and creases his forehead into a deep frown as he does his best to think where he would generally look for missing orphans back when he worked for Mama Flaust (Int 20!!!).

Syr
Tuesday October 1st, 2002 2:28:32 PM

The elf's eyes light up, "Wow, I've never seen that much gold in one place, Mom will definitely need it!"

Syr recalls Gordo's enthusiasm and lithely steps out of the man's huggable hands. "Interesting? Figuring out where the city now is would be interesting?"

Drew
Tuesday October 1st, 2002 6:12:22 PM

Drew hands the sapphire off to Syr, not knowing what to do with it. When Gordo comes near him trying to hug, he simply frowns and deals with whatever torture the man wishes to put him through. He stands 6'5" tall and wears sleeveless studded leather armor on even the hot days. His long brown hair is pulled back in a pony tail and his huge double bladed axe slung over his shoulder. On his right arm is a tatoo of a shield, and emblazened on the shield is a hand palm open and out in warning, or warmth. It is difficult to tell. When everyone starts greeting and talking, the once forward boy seems not to know what to do with himself and fades into the background to wait and see what they need to do next.

Turin
Tuesday October 1st, 2002 6:17:25 PM

Turin, upon hearing the worth of the gems, blinks. And the fence probably gave the kids only a pittance. "I, myself, would like to find this old man personally."

DM Kim. Reunion up the street  d100=55
Wednesday October 2nd, 2002 3:14:24 AM

"Mommy, MOMMY MO-O-OMMY-Y-Y-Y!" The voice of a little girl squeals out up the street. The girl on the guardsman's shoulder reaches out her hands, straining forward, and he sets her down, gentle and strong his hands around her waist. Her legs propel her forward, and he watches, a cautious smile on his face, yet his eyes narrow, still careful for the welfare of the girl.

Long auburn hair falls over a leather belted forest green dress, and a handsome young woman with open face, albeit worried, turns to the sound of the girl's voice. "Miranda!" she calls out, and bends down to catch up her daughter. "Oh, Miranda, Randa, Randi-roo, Mandi-babe. Oh, don't lose yourself to me like that, darlin'."

"I was NOT lost, Mommy. YOU was lost, but that man helped me find you," the little girl pouts, pointing her little finger sort of in the direction of her helper, but more up in the air than anywhere else.

A small crowd makes way for this noisy and happy little reunion, with plenty of smiles to go around among the onlookers.

The woman, who had set down her bag to hug her daughter, smiles at the man, reaches back for the bag - and finds it missing. Looking around and not seeing it, then looking a bit vexed - when the stout woman who left the grocer's a few minutes ago with two bags now waddles forward with a third bag. "Took it up fer ye, dearie. Lots o' little pocket pickers about these days. Here's yer wee sack."

Looking about to cry, the young woman hugs the older one, kisses her on both cheeks, and takes the bag. "Ah, careful the pears!" the lady says.

"Oh, sorry." The woman now with bag in left hand and daughter's hand in her right walks to the guard. "Thank you, sir, for your help." She reaches in her bag, and pulls out a wrapped parcel. "It's nothing, really. Just take it, and thank you for watching over Miranda."

The guard refuses the offered parcel. "Just my duty, ma'am, just my duty."

A skinny teenager with a distinct Adam's apple rolls his eyes to his stockier companion. The other adolescent sticks his finger down his throat as though forcing himself to gag.

"Bye mister. Are you married? My mommy's name is Pilar. Bye!" The guard just shakes his head - hard to tell whether he is answering no, or is just amused at Miranda. He turns to go, and walks down the street past Ilthelio's Exchange, heading for the other tine of Sailor's Fork.

About the same time, Fedjo walks in to the fruits and vegetables shop, apparently not noticing the group. Other sailors, from other boats and ships, also walk the fork.

Syr looks at the mother and child briefly and then leads on towards the trash level, not grasping what the excitement was about.

DM Kim
Monday October 7th, 2002 6:17:09 AM

Gordo recalls various nooks and crannies in and around Mama Flaust's place where the errant orphan might hide out - but it was almost always the orphans he found in those places, and not children from the rest of the city. [Finally got to that Int check.] So he concludes that, though such knowledge likely would have been helpful were it an orphan he sought, such is not now the case.

As the group picks up on Jezebella's suggestion, they find their way to the Trash level - the lowest of the six strata of The Float.

In this torch-lit area - the city's basement - the air is close, with malodorous whiffs of various flavors available throughout the area.

Walking along Beggars Alley, some sit, hands held out in meek request for some paltry sum, anything to help them out. A copper, or a piece of copper. Others are vocal. "Spare a coin? Maybe a silver? You can spare a silver, guvner? Help me take care of me poor child - has the consumption, she does. Just a little for her medicine. Surely you'd want to help a little girl?"

Up ahead, just around the corner, a woman's scream is heard. By the time she is in sight, she sits on the ground, holding her gnarled hand curled against her flat chest, rubbing the bleeding knuckles lightly, sobbing. A burly man spits on the ground next to her, and pushes his way through the adjacent door, which shuts behind him. She pays the passing group no mind, lost in her pain.

A snot-nosed child - boy or girl? - maybe four years old, sits next to an elderly woman who sleeps. The grime-covered child stares blankly ahead.

A pair of young ruffians take turns tossing white cubes against a wall. One fellow shows no emotion on his face as he does this. The other is more animated, showing pleased, or dismayed reactions at each toss of the dice. Six or seven people watch with interest. Whispered exchanges take place among them.

On the map:

the party draws near to building 71 - The Black Thorn Inn (upper left of the map).

Drew
Monday October 7th, 2002 10:02:08 AM

Drew looks around and shudders. He is almost shaking, then looking around at his family he closes his eyes and takes a deep breath... "Ahhh home sweet home." Pointing down the street he looks to Jez. "There it is... where you all met me. Where you were going to have to kill me. What a life time later."

Gordo  d20+3=12
Monday October 7th, 2002 11:57:09 AM

Though he knows that many of the day to day troubles in the undercity that is the Trash level are impossible to resolve, Gordo cannot simply stand by as he sees the misery and poverty around him. He is compelled to do something, anything, to try and add just a little joy and goodwill into this well of despair, though it may be as trying to douse an inferno with tears.

He remembers the the saying his mother, Olive, told him so often as a child; "Every little bit of good that I may do, let me do it now, for I may not pass this way again." and he knows he cannot simply stand idly by, even if ultimately he is fated to fail. Better to try and fail than live with the knowledge that he saw such misery, and did nothing.

He gives out several silver coins the beggars who approach him, and at the scream rushes to the fallen woman's side, offering to help her to her feet.

"You're hurt 'mam; here, let me see if I can help you." His open, honest face and simple manner display no duplicity, simply genuine concern at her plight. If the woman is willing he cleans and bandages her wounded hand (Heal 12). As he works he says "I am sorry for your pain, lady, I wish there was something I could do to take it away entirely."

Fishing in his bag he pulls out the remnants of his last meal, a half loaf of bread. Walking over to the filthy young urchin he kneels, places the crust in his (her?) hands, and gently ruffles the child's hair. "here you go, little one" he whispers, "It is not much, but I think you need this more than me."

CDM Jerry
Monday October 7th, 2002 3:58:02 PM

Kim has emailed me and asked me to take the game for a few days. I've replied and I promise that we're going to work on the posting here.

I guarantee that either Kim or I will post daily. Kim will also let you know the approximate DAILY TIME that he'll post each day. When I sub for Kim, I'll post between 5 and 7 PM Woldian Time (Which is Central Time).

Kim will notify me any day he can't post so that I can do so. He's very busy right now and doing the best he can. He's an adult so he will meet his responsibility and jot me a quick email if he needs me.

In return, from this day forward, until this game is deemed "healthy" by me again, I'll be checking roll. Not to do the "gotcha" thing, but to help us all get in the habit again. Our fun in this game is dependant on everyone, players and DMs, posting daily. We have made a committment to this game and we will all work to honor it or move on so that others who will be able to meet our mutual committment can take our place.

Email Kim (and I please for now) if you can't post for a few days. We'll get a sub for periods of less than 2 weeks and retire the character temporarily if longer.

All players are expected to post daily. I define daily as 4 times out of 5 in the week, with 5 out of 5 being the norm. Anyone not able to post at that rate should email me and go inactive until you can post daily. Our DMs are required to post daily. Period. Or get someone to post for them.

Speaking of that, we need a volunteer to be the Asst. DM for this game. Someone that can post for Kim occasionally when needed once the game is deemed healthy again by me. We really need someone to step up here an help. Preferrably a non DM type person. This person doesn't have to be an expert at DMing. Just someone willling to give something back to the game and do their best.

I will post tonight a bit late....after 9PM since Kim posted this morning. This will keep it from being over 24 hours from when Kim posted last to when I take over. Hopefully this lets every one get in a post before then. Starting tomorrow, my normal posting time is as stated above.

I'll delete this post after everyone has posted once and seen it. I am at school and would appreciate it if one of you would copy and paste this into an email to send to all the Game 8 players for me. I want this game taking off again immediately.

We haven't been awful, but we need to get much better! I'll be helping with that. Not slamming folk. :)

Enjoy your day and get ready to rock tonight!

Futility by Torchlight [DM Jerry]
Monday October 7th, 2002 11:09:06 PM

Those Gordo helps thank him. The lady with a crooked teeth smile and the kids with voracious eating and nodding.

It feels awkward, even after all your years on and around Fence Level to travel around by torchlight in the middle of the day.

The search which lasts for several hours is fruitless. Eventually empty stomachs and tired feet make you realize that it's long past suppertime.

The guards change and the nightguards seems more sinister and fewer in numbers.

Drew's stomach grumbles loudly.

A ::yawn:: escapes the mouth of another.

How late is it?

Syr
Tuesday October 8th, 2002 4:05:51 AM

Covering his gaping mouth, "It's way too late." With a sigh he tells the others, "It's time to face the music, let's get back to the orphanage and tell Mother what happened."

With a sad shake of his head he mutters to Jezebella, "We have to find some way to earn some gold to replace the fortune that is lost."

As he turns to leave, he pauses as the big man attends to the fallen lady. He gazes with fondness on Gordo and wonders how something so awful could occur to a man with such a huge heart.

Jezebella
Tuesday October 8th, 2002 8:30:41 AM

Jezebella sighs. "I'm sorry Gordo. I should have stopped the kids when I noticed them picking. I didn't know anyone would lose a fortune." She sighs again, turning with her friends to return to the orphanage.

Drew
Tuesday October 8th, 2002 9:23:22 AM

"Have heart. We have others looking for what was taken, perhaps it will all work out. However perhaps now we can get home and have a bite to eat and some sleep."

Turin
Tuesday October 8th, 2002 9:51:22 AM

Turin sighs. They're not likely to find them again on their own, now. He agrees that they should return.

Tionel
Tuesday October 8th, 2002 11:21:18 AM

After the search among the youths of the area for the two he saw turns fruitless, the young elf entertainer sighs. "It appears that we are unlucky in our venture. Perhaps we should recuperate at the inn?" He points to the inn at the end of the alley. "Besides, there might be information in there...though, I'd suggest being subtle about it..."

Gordo
Tuesday October 8th, 2002 2:54:51 PM

"Well, I'd like get back to see Mama Flaust, if that's OK with the rest of you. At least I can give her the one gem I do have left, and let her know we're hunting for the rest. Ah, what a shame. Still, It'll all work out for the best, you'll see! Things usually do, if you let them."

He grins at his new companions in the flickering torchlight.

Pony Tail [DM Jerry]
Tuesday October 8th, 2002 11:11:37 PM

(went with the majority)

The tired adventurers head home after a weary day of fruitless searching. Still, the race between Drew and the sailor was exciting! Plus Gordo returned and joined the kids as an equal! And Tional joined the crew!

Quite a day.

As you rise to your level of the city, you notice that the sun has already set. Approaching your apartment, you see a dark, pony-tailed man heading upstairs to the apartment above yours. Must be that new boy. He has two smaller kids with him. Younger. Wearing hoods.

One takes his hood back. Red hair.

[Spot check of 12 to realize that they are the same 2 boys as were on the docks.]

They disappear inside.

Dark up there. Very dark.

[OOC: Have sent emails to Ubaerul and [Ryan]. DM Kim will return on Friday.]

Ubaerul's Psicrystal [DM Jerry]
Wednesday October 9th, 2002 1:46:03 AM

A floating crystal comes up and circles around the party quickly a couple of times.

It then settles in front of Jezebella and touches her forehead.

"Jez! Ubaerul here. I have found a psionicist master here at the docks. He has offered me a chance to travel with him to Plateau City and study at a school there. I've decided to go. Tell Flaust for me and give my thanks. Tell the gang goodbye for me. I feel like this is my shot to make it so I'm taking it. Good luck!"

The psicrystal then flies off again. Amazing!

Syr
Wednesday October 9th, 2002 4:53:57 AM

Syr brightens slightly when their new home comes into sight. He nods to the neighbors as they go up the stairs. Not witnessing the earlier thefts, the elf yawns and moves into their house.

Drew  d20=17
Wednesday October 9th, 2002 10:39:11 AM

Drew never saw the two boys before but he doesn't like the way they slunk about before going inside... luckily his eyes peer through the dark and he fears it not. Then all thoughts of that leave his head when the crystal comes and goes. As Drew begins to go inside he mumbles, "The wonders of the wold, may they never cease to amaze me."

"My, you've got yourselves your own apartment?" Gordo enthuses, as they approach the building. "Listen, you settle in, I'll pop over to say hello to Mama Flaust, and then I'll be back..."

He tails off as he spots the ponytailed man on the stairs. Something inside his head seems to want to tell him something...

"... I'll be back later on..." he stops again as he spots the two lads from the docks heading into the upstairs apartment. His jaw drops and he points up at the doorway where they vanished, only barely managing to keep from shouting out.

"Did you see who that was?" he gasps, still pointing. "Those two boys, and I'm sure the taller one was the fellow from the docks as well! I think we'd best have a word!"

His mouth a grim line, the big man marches towards the stairs, chest out and shoulders wide. He doesn't seem particularly angry, rather calm, in a way that suggests the prospect of a storm.

Urgent Voices [DM Jerry]
Wednesday October 9th, 2002 7:41:31 PM

As Gordo approaches the stairs, the last boy enters the apartment and turns to close the door.

His eyes go wide with fear and recognition when he sees Gordo's face.

The door slams.

A light turns on.

Urgent voices are heard.

The light turns off.

Jezebella  d20+5=23
Wednesday October 9th, 2002 8:07:39 PM

Jezebella nods. "Yes, Gordo, I saw them too! I think that man with the ponytail lives above us. He introduced himself yesterday." She trails behind the larger man as he moves to the doorway. She palms one of her daggers, in case things get ugly.

Tionel  d20+5=16

The elf touches his own black ponytail when Gordo identifies the duo. Without a second thought he races up the stairs (Burst +10 movement). Upon arriving on the landing he either opens the door braced for action or slams a shoulder against it in an effort to force it open (str check 19).

Overtaken by Syr, the big man stomps up the stairs behind him, saying "If anyone has a light, now'd be a good time to use it."

If required, he will assist Syr in barging open the door (Aid Another, +2 to Syr's Str check)

Drew  d20+8=27
Thursday October 10th, 2002 12:24:02 PM

Drew, hearing that the boys are right up stairs, steps back out side, and then, seeing Syr sprint up the stairs, follows (move 40). A deep growl is heard from his throat and his shoulder slams into the door at the precise moment as his brother (Aid another +2). He comes through the door growling and looking as if he could rip the throat from a beast with his bare teeth. (Intimidate 27) Locking eyes with whomever is in the room, being able to see in the dark, he growls, "No one moves, and no one dies."

Turin
Thursday October 10th, 2002 5:36:43 PM

Turin follows Drew, and gets ready to do something if Drew's frightening visage isn't enough.

No One Moves! [DM Jerry]
Thursday October 10th, 2002 11:06:13 PM

The door slams open, comes off the hinges along with part of the wall and flies across the room.

Syr , Drew, and Gordo, go crashing inside. (Dex checks of 8 to remain standing.)

Drew makes his threat known...to an empty room.

As Syr touches his own pony tail, he spots on the floor, perhaps dropped in a hasty exit, a brown wig with a brown pony tail.

The room is filled with satin pillows in bright colors. Linens hang from the ceiling around the walls and to create 3 living areas inside the one. (think arabian) Rugs adorn the floor under the stacks of pillows.

This level of luxury does not fit the squalor of the building's condition.

There is a night stand in the rear portion of the room. Two windows and one door in the rear of the apartment remain open. A colorful painting adorns the wall itself on the left side of the apartment. It is of a beautiful girl with dark eyes...

...with an extra eye is opening on her forehead.

Eerie.

Drew
Friday October 11th, 2002 10:59:41 AM

Seeing that the room is empty he sprints across through the open back door and looks around. Should he see them he will yell and give chase at top speed.

Tionel
Friday October 11th, 2002 4:32:13 PM

Tionel, not as fast as the others with dash or whatnot, and in the back to boot, looks over shoulders and around the doorway. "Drat! They've gone! They could only have gone through that door..." As he looks, he notices the eerie painting. "What's that...?"

Turin
Friday October 11th, 2002 5:02:33 PM

Turin, right behind the others, ducks back as soon as he sees the third eye. Whatever it does, he doesn't want to see immediately.

Pay no Mind (DM Kim)  6d20(19+20+3+4+4+9)=59
Saturday October 12th, 2002 1:24:49 AM

Syr realizes that he felt a sharp momentary pressure in his head as he ascended the stairs. It subsides as he reaches the top.

In addition to the items mentioned is a desk next the front window - through which some party members have seen their upstairs neighbor from time to time. Jezebella happened to notice what looks like a scroll resting on the desk.

Turin sees some sort of symbol on the opposite wall, although the light is rather too dim to fully discern it.

As he moves to examine the painting, Tionel bumps his foot against a loosely laced medium-sized boy's shoe almost touching the wall.

The woman in the picture has black hair, light brown skin, and lips which look naturally dark. The extra eye is very well painted, and looks almost real - the lid about a third of the way down the eye. Her other two eyes are opened wider, as though taking a deep interest in the person she looks at. All three eyes are a deep brown, with large pupils. Unusual, though strangely attractive, Tionel sees that, in addition to the luxuriant hair on her head, short wisps of hair grow below and parallel to her main hairline.

Drew & Gordo look out into a back alley. A pair of guards pass by the bottom of the steep stairs below, and one looks up in Drew's direction. He pivots and pulls his spear against his chest. He squints his eyes, as though trying to discern what he sees, and taps the calf of his companion with the butt of his spear in order to get his attention. "All well up there?" the man asks, his tone of voice demanding an answer.

Syr happens to pick up the brown wig, and notes it is warm. He finds a lighter-colored hair stuck underneath the mesh bottom. It is rather dark in the upper room.

Gordo  d20+4=17
Saturday October 12th, 2002 12:26:28 PM

Those guards obviously didn't see anyone running away, or they'd have chased after them, Gordo thinks to himself. Leaving the rear doorway, Gordo strides quickly back to the door they broke down, and stands in it, his arms folded across his broad hairy chest. His massive frame blocks the doorway completely. He speaks to the empty air, playing a hunch.

"All right, you can show yourselves now. I know you're still here. Those gems you stole from me this morning were intended for the orphans across the road at Mama Flaust's. And they need them a whole lot more than you do. Show yourselves right now, return the gems, and we'll say no more about it." (Diplomacy 17)

Tionel
Sunday October 13th, 2002 4:46:22 AM

Tionel hums a little tune as he looks over the room. Not stopping his humming, while examining the painting he reaches up and puts his finger towards the third eye...just barely stopping before it. "Amazing detail."

Jezebella
Sunday October 13th, 2002 8:41:25 PM

Turin, turning back, looks closer at the symbol, trying to figure out what it is (Spot 20).

Syr (Carl)
Monday October 14th, 2002 6:39:21 AM

Syr moves to the windows, and scans the street below looking for the missing trio. En route he picks up the fallen hairpiece, and examines it closely.

Monday October 14th, 2002 9:17:00 AM

Drew calls to the guards. "Just looking for a couple of thieves. They ran out the back door here."

DM Kim
Monday October 14th, 2002 1:01:08 PM

"Ah, yes sir. What did they look like? What did they take?" the spear-wielding guard asks Drew. The other guard looks left, then right.

No one answers Gordo at his diplomatic challenge.

Jezebella can see writing on the scroll. An oil lamp next to it, if it were lit, might shed some light. After a moment to use one of the nearby tindertwigs, she lights the lamp.

Tionel
Tuesday October 15th, 2002 12:03:45 AM

Tionel looks around the room, and seeing nobody, he lifts the painting off the wall, looking behind the frame to see if there's some secret or whatnot.

DM Kim  d20=19
Tuesday October 15th, 2002 1:41:48 AM

As Tionel moves his finger away from the central eye in the painting, a blue arc shoots forth, zapping his finger in a bite of electricity that shoots up his arm, causing his neck to spasm momentarily. The effect is mainly painful, rather than particularly damaging. The pain subsides within a minute or two.

He is able to lift the painting and see behind it, to no further ill effect. It is held up by a wire which is affixed to the two upper corners, and the wire is wrapped at its center a few times around a solid bolt which protrudes from the wall a wee bit.

Jezebella reads.
======
Master,

My research proceeds apace. Am seeking to acquire additional stones to aid us in our work. Hope to examine the general locale you mentioned in the next day or two.

I trust the polygon will be suitably pleased with our upcoming report. Psychic power beyond reason? Power to bolster reason, and fancy, and insight, and energy... oh, good Master, think of the riches, the possibilities should all be as we speculate - as some with the gift even foretell. Tell the Hazel that she was correct in her one suggestion.

And thus the unfinished letter ends.

No more of substance is found - other than, in a wastebasket with ashes and an apple core at the bottom, are three pearls - they look familiar to Gordo.

Gordo
Tuesday October 15th, 2002 3:12:43 AM

Gordo picks out the pearls, and stands staring at the words on the wall with a puzzled expression. "Oh dear, this is beginning to look like a mystery" he rumbles. "I'm not much good at mysteries. Who's Hazel? And the polygon? Are they using my gems (and others like them) for some sort of ritual?"

Syr  d20+4=20
Tuesday October 15th, 2002 3:15:58 AM

"Obviously the Polygon is some sort of secret agency, and they are using the gems as focusing tools in some sort of psionic experiment" the elf explains. This could be serious; whoever these people are, they are messing with some pretty fundamental powers."

He racks his brain trying to glean any last scrap of information from the words on the wall (Knowledge Psionics 20)

DM Kim
Tuesday October 15th, 2002 4:12:20 AM

[Folks, super busy day. Nine hours in class, ten hours interning, intermittent problems posting from computer at work...]

The writing Jezebella read was from the scroll left on the desk. On the back of the scroll is a sketch of intersecting isosceles trapezoids.

Syr noted a rune on the underside of the wig.

The symbol Turin spotted was on the wall of the stairway. It is a complex geometric figure. Calling upon his background in psionics, Syr finds it reminds him of a certain style of psychic tatoo which some psions use to access powers. He does not know the precise purpose of this one, though. Is it a ward? An alarm? A protection? A trigger of sorts?

After a few minutes of additional searching, in one small drawer in the desk a brass-handled signet is found, with dual intersecting isosceles trapezoids. A quarter pound block of red wax sits next it in the drawer, along with a jar of ink, five quills, and a small ball of string. A larger drawer holds forty five sheets of fine quality paper. Near the bottom, a small patch, three inches in diameter, of dried skin, bears a tiny drawing of a bird flying, surrounded by a complex of interwoven knots.

Some of the cushions you might guess to be filled with feathers, and others with a substance that makes a soft crunching sound when moved. The latter can be pushed into positions they hold until moved again. The hanging linens are high quality, indeed.

It is apparent -- the young man and the boys are no longer here. How did they escape?

The guards, based upon whatever Drew may tell them, say they will keep their eyes out.

Feel free to post any additional thoughts or actions regarding the upstairs neighbor's place.

Finally, after discussing things a while, the group resolve to get some sleep. In the morning, Mother Flaust is very pleased to see Gordo again, and asks how the youngsters found him.

I leave it to you to tell her what you will.

Asking around town the next day, not many seem to know about the fellow with the pony tail. Ilthelio has not heard of any gems being fenced matching the descriptions Gordo gave.

Soon will be the coming of the Overlord, to become the Underlord, and Mask Day - less than a week away, now!

The following evening, a knock is heard at the front of the shop/apartment where the party stays. A few of you go to the door. A woman, accompanied by a town guard, stands at the doorway. In the flickering light of a street lamp, her long red hair frames a sorrowful face. "My boys, they are gone now, a day and a half now. My twins. Torl - the young man upstairs - someone told me that Torl took them. Maybe in a boat. Have you seen them? Tell me if you've seen them. Tell me what you know."

It takes a moment to recognize her - but this looks like the woman from the other day whose daughter was returned to her by a town guard.

Drew
Tuesday October 15th, 2002 9:48:37 AM

Drew steps forward to the woman. "We have seen the boys in the company of the man upstairs, in fact they are suspected of stealing some gems for him meant for the orphans of Flaust. They were seen in his company last night and they fled with him when we gave chase in askance of the stolen gems. Two guards were behind the building last night and we gave these two men descriptions of your boys and the man who we believe was wearing a wig."

Turin
Tuesday October 15th, 2002 4:34:53 PM

Turin doesn't know what to make of the bizarre symbol, and it doesn't seem like it will be a very fruitful search here, so, after a few tries, he suggests they go to sleep.

The mother (DM Kim)
Wednesday October 16th, 2002 1:22:49 AM

"Maybe it was not my boys. Mine have red hair, they are slender. Light freckles on the nose." Looking at the woman in the lamplight, the description thus far - plus the similarity in shape of her nose, and their's - it must be her sons with the man. "They are good boys. Energetic. Since Monahres [/mo 'na res/] my husband, disappeared last year, though, things have been different. Difficult. Garil [/ga 'rIl/] became morose, withdrawn. Daro [/'da ro/] tried to cheer him up, but I could see his sorrow, too. Then, a few weeks ago, they seemed to brighten. Said they were helping out someone, and would have a big surprise for me one day. But since yesterday morning, I do not see them. Their sister cried earlier tonight for them. Can you imagine? She cried for them. Oh, if you know someone who can help me find them..."

The guard (DM Kim)
Wednesday October 16th, 2002 1:26:48 AM

"Citizens," the tall and lean guard says, "if you know anything else about them, it would be a good idea to tell us now."

Tionel
Wednesday October 16th, 2002 3:35:37 AM

"Please, Ma'am, sit..." he helps her to a chair with a comforting hand. "We'll try and find them. I hope that your sons are okay, and pray that no harm has come to them. If we do find them, I assure you, I will bring word of them back to you..." His soft voice is very soothing, and hopefully will calm the woman. "Now, can you tell me anything else? Say, what did your husband look like, in case we find him as well? Do you know any places that they like to go to?"

Jezebella
Wednesday October 16th, 2002 8:11:14 AM

The gypsy girl describes the man with the ponytail the best she can to the guard and the woman. "Does this sound familiar?" she asks both of them.

Drew
Wednesday October 16th, 2002 12:13:56 PM

Drew looks down and shuffling his feet, he reaches up and scratches his tatoo distractedly. Sighing he mumbles under his breath, "To protect and serve may his lesson be the lesson for all." Looking up there is grim determination in his eyes. To the mother he says softly, "My dear lady if they have been lied to or taken against their will I will find them. I will not speak for my family but I believe they will go with me. However if they have stolen of their own free will they have removed food from the mouths of my helpless brothers and sisters. Should that be the case I will return them to the authorities. Your faith in your boys is what drives me to seek them, your love and faith make me believe they have been misled, however carefully guard your heart. No man may know what another may do." Looking at Jez he finishes. "Someone who is trying to kill you one minute may find that they love you more than they will ever be able to say the next." The half orc blushes deeply and then clears his throat. "There are boys to be found," and then he quickly rushes out side, the red still deeply coloring his face.

Gordo
Wednesday October 16th, 2002 12:21:24 PM

A proud grin on his face, Gordo watches Drew leave.

"Lady, Drew can speak for me. We will find your boys, or know the reason why. Fear not, we will find them."

To the guard he explains events since his arrival, as simply and honestly as he is able.

Turin
Wednesday October 16th, 2002 6:23:22 PM

Turin, noticing most of the others are giving out the info, thinks a bit. "If Torl took them by boat, someone down at the docks should know. That would be the first place to check around."

The mother (DM Kim)
Thursday October 17th, 2002 3:00:43 AM

The woman - you learn her name is Pilar, tells Jezebella that the young man the boys have been with looks as she described.

Concerning her missing husband, she says, "Monahres was - is 5'10", and weighed 180 or so. His hair was brown, his beard red. And a handsome dimple on his chin. He was very strong, and quick. When he wanted to be. When they were younger, he would toss the boys in the air, and catch them, oh so gentle." She gets a faraway look in her eyes as she thinks on her husband.

She listens to Drew and the others. She looks troubled when the stealing is mentioned. "Oh, no, that cannot be. I have taught them not to take others' things. But if what you say is true - oh, what a thrashing they should deserve!" When it is clear the group intends to help, she says, "Oh, thank you, thank you so very much," she says. "May you be blessed by the noble gods for your kindness and bravery." Pilar gives Jezebella a hug.

The guard (DM Kim)
Thursday October 17th, 2002 3:07:16 AM

The guard steps out as Drew exits, and takes him by the arm to slow him down. Drew can tell there is great strength there, but the man does not retain his grasp. "Hold, sir. Think, sir - it is the nighttime, and the one moon will drop over the horizon in no time at all, and the other not up this night at all. If it's going on the water you are thinking, best wait until morning. Rise early, and see what you may do. In the meantime, I will see if any more help may be come to light. I will be at the docks before sunrise. If you do not see me, ask for Sgt Canty."

Gordo
Thursday October 17th, 2002 4:24:45 AM

"Aye, big fella, the man is right" Gordo says to Drew. "Let's get some rest, have a bit of a think about everything that's happened, and tackle it fresh in the morning."

Drew
Thursday October 17th, 2002 9:41:14 AM

Once reaching the outside breathes deeply of the night air. When the guard follows and catces him he seems unconcerned. "I only wished a little air. The room seemed very . . . close for a bit, a little warm suddenly. I am fine now and will go no where before my family decides to acompany me or not." the blush seems to have left his face, or perhaps its simply to dark out here to see it.

Tionel
Thursday October 17th, 2002 3:07:41 PM

"Sounds good. I've gotta say, so far it's been fun going around with you guys. This all seems like some big puzzle. I'm still confused by how that painting shocked me! Well, I'll see you in the morn." He tips his hat... "Unless you'd like to join me for some dinner or ale downstairs?"

Turin
Thursday October 17th, 2002 4:41:44 PM

Turin, hearing the conversation, nods to Drew. "In the morning, we'll head down there."

Jezebella
Thursday October 17th, 2002 5:04:06 PM

Jezebella gives the woman a smile, and pets her arm reasurringly. "We will do all we can, Ma'am. We ... we certainly know the value of family." Her eyes follow Drew as he leaves. She seems thoughtful for a moment, but doesn't leave the woman's side.

To Tionel, she says "We seem to stumble from adventure to adventure... it is certainly never dull. As for drinks downstairs.. we happen to live downstairs, and I don't think we stocked up on ale!" She jokes with a smile.

Good evening (DM Kim)
Friday October 18th, 2002 1:30:39 AM

"Yes, sir," the sergeant replies to Drew. He steps back inside.

Pilar offers more thanks and blessings, but finally goes off with Sgt Canty after he pointedly clears his throat a few times.

A place is cleared for the newcomer, Tionel - since Ubaerul has left, not much clearing is needed.

Sleep comes easily to some, not so to others.

Morning has broken (DM Kim)
Friday October 18th, 2002 1:40:23 AM

Drew, barely able to catch a few winks, rousts the rest before the sun comes over the horizon. Sleep is rubbed from the eyes, and, following the hasty grabbing of a few bites of day-old bread and cold water splashed on the face, the group heads down to the docks.

Asking around - there are a few sailors up at the crack of dawn, but more merchants setting up for the day, Sgt Canty is not immediately found. No one seems to know much about any boat taking off last night -- at least no one they have asked so far.

On the ship of the contest of a couple days ago, however, a small wirey figure is climbing the ropes up to the crows nest.

[Go ahead and post how you might go about seeking the information you desire. I should post again in the early afternoon Friday some reactions to those who have posted, then again on Saturday.]

Friday October 18th, 2002 2:34:14 AM

To gather information, the charming elf will approach a person, smile and get their attention with a cheerful comment about how horrible the weather is or how annoying rich people are, or about how interestingly dressed the women are down the street... after that interesting opening, he begs the pardon of the person he's talking to, but...he will then ask, apologetically, if the person's seen two kids, or a man vaguely matching the description he provides. If asked why he's looking for them, Tionel admits that his pesky landlord forced him into doing this chore. Suitable complaining about being pushed around should overcome any other obstacles, such as distrust or resentment. In short, Tionel makes a sort of kinship with each person he comes across; constantly commenting on things while using the person's name in a familiar way, for a short while becoming their friend. His method probably takes a bit longer than anyone else's, but with the indepth approach, he is certain of each and every person. And besides, every person has a suitable impression of him such that they will never forget him...

Gordo too asks around, entirely without guile. He is open, friendly and honest in his queries.

Turin, after a bit of grumbling and groaning about how decent people aren't up until noon, gets up and is ready to deal with stuff.

As far as boats at the night goes, he asks after the night watchmen, if there are any. They're the ones most likely to know of any boats.

Being more of a blunt weapon than a sharp negotiator, Drew stands back and allows those of his family who are smarter (all of them) to ask the questions. The half Orc seems strangely distant this morning, not different just ... embarrassed? But soon as the day passes it goes away and he is back to normal.

A Stranger (DM Kim)
Friday October 18th, 2002 8:14:41 PM

In making the inquiries, the group has agreed to split up a bit to cover more ground. Some time after the group heads to the docks, Gordo and Jezebella find themselves again on Sailor's Fork. Gordo just noticed the vegetable grocer pointing at Jezebella. Next to the grocer, a man wearing a weather-beaten and stained hooded cloak casually glances their direction. The hood obscures the face. The hilt of a sword pushes itself from beneath the garment. A hand reaches down and pats the head of a large canine - which looks both intelligent and wild.

Jezebella
Saturday October 19th, 2002 3:30:22 PM

Jez asks around, describing Torl and the two lads... including the elaborate tatoo they first noticed when talking to the man. She asks the marketgoers, the store operators, and the 'unnoticed' ... the beggers and cripples others ignore on the street. She will give some loose coins to those people. They see much, when people don't see them looking.

..............

She follows Gordo's gaze, looking to the grocer and the armed stranger with the canine. (ooc : wolf? dog?) In her usual style, she stalks toward them, ready to demand their interest.

A Stranger
Saturday October 19th, 2002 4:29:30 PM

The hooded stranger sees Jezebella stalking towards his direction. He pulls back his hood revealing a weather worn but young face. His brown hair is cut short and ragged.

"You look as though you are about to demand my interest," he grins, "so I'll spare you your breath. I am Barick and I hear you know where I can find Mama Flaust's orphanage, is this true? If it is I should like to meet with her."

Tionel

Since he hasn't yet found anyone, and he is unlucky enough not to be near Jezebella, Tionel distracts himself with a rather pretty human who he just happens to bump into, and share a lot of common interests with.

Sunday October 20th, 2002 2:52:35 AM

From various sources, the investigators get conflicting information. One mentions a two-turtle cruise that is taking people out in the water a ways and back again, just to look around. Some know nothing of any boaters. One man, who holds out a hand pointedly, seeks gold in exchange for whispered information. For five gold pieces, he points off towards the west, saying a rowboat went off that direction last night. Several state that permission to go out on the water is in the hands of the chief of the docks, and there are fines for those who leave without her authorization.

One man allows as how a young man with some boys, "Don't know how many fer sure," managed to talk him into letting one of his boats be rented last night. "Sorry, my mind is kinda fuzzy about all that," he confesses. When offered a monetary inducement to help jog his memory, he laughs, and says, "Oh, no, it's not that kind of fuzzy. I just really can't remember too much. Think they went that way, at least startin' out." He points around towards the east. "Or maybe it was that-a-ways," he speculates, pointing straight away from the docks toward the south. "Ah, I get a headache just tryin' ta think about it, just like I got last night."

Gordo
Sunday October 20th, 2002 1:40:30 PM

Gordo follows Jezebella, and happily gives directions to Mama Flaust's. "I used to work there, you know," he explains, grinning. "Fine people. Would you mind if I asked your business with the good lady?"

Regarding the group's findings, Gordo feels the boat heading west is their strongest lead. "I say we find the master of the docks, explain what we've heard, and ask permission to follow," he says, not wanting to break the rules.

Barick
Sunday October 20th, 2002 3:09:39 PM

Barick looks at the large man quizzically, "Thank you for your help friend -- but my business is my own. I've heard she's a good woman for whom I would like to present a, uh, gift shall we say.

"Since you say you used to work there perhaps you'd care to accompany my friend and me and introduce us to Flaust? If, of course, you're still on good terms with the lady," Barick grins.

Jezebella
Monday October 21st, 2002 8:53:58 AM

Jezebella purses her lips for a moment, and then replies to the hooded stranger. "Pardon me for my bluntness, good sir, but I won't be the one who directs an armed stranger to my adoptive mother's home when he refuses to explain why he wishes to see her." She stands loosely, keeping Barick's swordhand in her vision.

Drew
Monday October 21st, 2002 9:41:53 AM

Drew coming up quietly crosses his arms and stands protectively behind Jez. After she speaks he looks the man over. "Those that need to ask where to find her in recent days bring only trouble. My family needs no more of that, so we are protective and careful. If you come without trouble then that should not surprise you at all and you should put our fears to rest."

Barick
Monday October 21st, 2002 2:27:46 PM

"My my Krug," he says stroking the head of the beast at his side, "some of them are such a testy lot aren't they? Well I think you either love this woman deeply or she pays you very well but either way matters little to me. I've said before and I'll say again my business is my own but since I'm not looking for trouble I'll assure you I mean no harm.

"In any event I'd like to extend the invitation I gave this fine fellow," gesturing towards Gordo, "since he was kind enough to tell me the directions to Mama Flaust's already. I would greatly appreciate it if you would all escort me to this orphanage so that I may get finished with my business. Come now, it'll be an adventure," he says with a wink.

Roterb the Walleyed of Ilthelio's (DM Kim)  d20=6 d20=6 d20=13 d20=1 d20=19
Monday October 21st, 2002 4:02:34 PM

About this time, all of the party regroups with the others on Sailor's Fork. Turin and Drew notice Roterb - the walleyed pinched-faced employee of Ilthelio - exiting the Exchange, and walking rapidly up the street, grumbling, carrying a note in this hand, and looking down at the street.

DM Kim
Monday October 21st, 2002 4:07:58 PM

The party heads up to Mama Flaust's with this Barick, despite, or perhaps because of, their distrust of his motives. The wild canine that Barick calls 'Krug' rumbles a low growl at Drew, as the half orc looms large over Jezebella, but takes no offensive action.

Just before they arrive, Roterb is leaving the orphanage, mumbling and looking down at the street, hands in pockets, as he walks next to the building to avoid running into whomever is in front of him.

Into the orphanage they are about to go, when Mother Flaust herself steps out the door, looking at the envelope in her hands. Looking up and about to call out, she sees the party in front of her. "Hello, children," the homely woman says, despite the fact that not all those who stand before her are children. "I was about to tell the man who just dropped this off that he should take it across the street. Oh, Gordo, I am so glad you are back. Maybe you can tell the children some of your stories some time this week." She hands him the envelope on which is written 'Gordo'. [Carl - see email.]

Looking at Barick, and down at the canine, she kneels down to look at the creature. She looks to the ground, then up into his eyes. She holds the back of her hand out, and Krug sniffs, cautiously. After a moment, he licks her hand once. She slowly moves her hand to scratch hehind his ear, then under his neck. Krug begins to wag his tail like a puppy, and licks her face joyfully.

She rises after patting Krug a few more times, and looks at Barick. "Are you his, then?" she asks the man.

Turin
Monday October 21st, 2002 5:36:01 PM

Turin looks at the dog, then at Barick. "Was your hair longer before?"

Gordo
Monday October 21st, 2002 6:39:14 PM

Fumbling at the letter with some bemusement, the large hairy fellow pulls out the contents and smooths them down. He reads slowly, brow furrowed in concentration, and as he does so a smile spreads across his whiskered face.

Turning to Barick he says, "Well, seems like I get to know your business after all! Friend, you're a man after my own heart. That gem you found was in my keeping, en route to Mama Flaust's orphanage, when it was stolen yesterday by two scamps and an older fellow, along with a goodly number more. There was a chase, but the scoundrels got away. We spoke to Ilthelio, the man you saw about the gem, and asked him to keep an eye out for them. Well, it seems one fell in his, or rather our, lap! I simp-ly can't thank you enough. Domi bless you, friend!

"But here, read for yourselves."

And he presents the note from Ilthelio to all present, which reads as follows.

Gordo,

Sir - I believe I have seen one of your gems. An elf claims to have found it on the street. It matches the description you gave of one of the sapphires. I told him I believed I knew the owner, but he thought I was scamming him.

Do know that I directed him, when he suggested he give the gem or its proceeds to charity, to Mother Flaust's orphanage. Should it end up in her hands, and you come to learn of it, keep in mind our agreement.

The stone should fetch between 400 - 450 gold, if someone does not cheat him.

Good day,

Ilthelio

Ilthelio's Exchange

Floating City

Gordo quickly explains the details of their deal with Ilthelio to Mama Flaust, then continues, "But tell me, Barick, where did you find it? It may give us a clue in tracking down the thieves."

Tionel  d20+6=14
Tuesday October 22nd, 2002 12:25:24 AM

Tionel watches the orphanage owner as she pets the dog bemusedly. "It's a pleasure to meet you, ma'am. Such work is often unappreciated. My name is Tionel, and I could tell your children a story or two, if you'd like."

The friendly elf looks at the human with the dog somewhat happily. He attempts a soft voice and a soothing manner, and gently pats the dog, much as he would a wolf... very carefully, but with great respect. However, he's not used to tame animals... had it been wild, he was sure he'd know exactly what to do. (Handle Animal roll 14 total) "Nice friend you have here Barick. Strong and well-fed."

Tionel looks back to the half-orc. "What do you think we should do next, Gordo? I've heard many different stories of where they could have gone... I don't think we have any real evidence we can trust, and any guess could put us a bit farther off..."
--------
[Tionel recognizes Barick's companion as a wolf, as would others who have traveled widely. A few of the orphans who have spent their lives in Floating City would not necessarily know a wolf. -DM Kim]

(OOC: Gordo is a human, albeit a big hairy one! Drew is the Half Orc. -Carl)

Drew
Tuesday October 22nd, 2002 9:15:14 AM

Drew steps forward. "No matter what we do we owe the Gem Master some money. I suggest we go back to the docks and ask about a bit more, also we can pay the man the debt we owe him."

Syr  d20+4=11 d20+2=8
Tuesday October 22nd, 2002 11:58:06 AM

"I'm with you, Drew," says Syr, rubbing his nose. "And perhaps we can try to find out if anyone else saw those three making off in a boat. That stuff the fellow on the docks said about not being able to remember events clearly, it sounds to me like these folks are using mind powers to cover their tracks..." (he thinks hard about mind powers that might allow such a thing, Knowledge (psionics) 11)

Once the group return to the docks he does his best to gather information regarding the three fugitives, asking if anyone else saw the boat carrying them West (Gather info 8). "It's the only positive lead we have left," he says to the others, should no more routes present themselves.

Jezebella
Tuesday October 22nd, 2002 6:24:53 PM

Jezebella sighs. "I'm sorry, Mr. Barick. I am perhaps overprotective of this place and the people here."

She mumbles under her breath as she turns away, "could have told us the truth anyway."

Louder, she continues. "I think the best lead we have is the man who got headaches when thinking about the man with a number of boys renting the boat. Perhaps he was ensorcelled not to remember clearly."

Barick (by DM Kim)
Wednesday October 23rd, 2002 1:24:09 AM

[Barick describes where he found the gem. The party recognizes this as the short left tine of Sailor's Fork - the direction the gray-robed brown ponytailed man went after meeting briefly with the boys. Maybe there was a small hole in the pouch after the boy cut it from Gordo's belt. -DM Kim]

Relying on Krug's evaluation of Mother Flaust, he answers, "Yes, I'm his. Barick, ma'am. As you now have heard, I found something the other day, and would like for it to go to a worthwhile work. Whether it is from the source these your friends suppose," he says as he hands her a blue sapphire, "I found this, and wish for you to have it, for your charitable works. This busy man at the Exchange also gave me this note as to its worth." He hands her a note, which reads:

Sapphire, oval cut, heat treated, 1.97 carets. Estimated market value 400 - 440 gp. --Ilthelio's Exchange

"It is clear these good people here hold you in high regard. I had thought to ask to see the orphanage, but I suppose that is not necessary."

Turning to Jezebella, he says, "I saw a man and two boys row away from here night before last. They disappeared into the darkness, but I can tell you which way they were heading. They were the ones who took your gems, perhaps?"

Mama Flaust -DM Kim
Wednesday October 23rd, 2002 1:59:01 AM

"Why, of course you are welcome to see the orphanage, Barick, come in, come in, and have some biscuits and tea with us," Mother Flaust invites.

Though it is evident the group wants to go to the docks to follow up on their leads, she insists that all come in for some tea, and shows Barick some of the rooms. Barick is perhaps surprised when she says something to Krug, who sits and waits for one of the children to bring a bowl of mashed up food leavings. He appears to enjoy eating it, after looking up at Barick first, as if seeking permission.

She tells Tionel that she is sure the children would be delighted to have another storyteller. "Once you have taken care of whatever it is you need to take care of, then do come back and share your stories."

"Turin, mind the crumbs, dearie. They are falling in your lap."

"Garl," she says to a homely half orc boy, "this is Big Drew, whom I told you about." She introduces Garl to the group. "Garl has been very helpful in keeping some of the more rambuctious boys from bothering the girls. I told him he reminds me of you, Drew. We are learning now more about what 'gently' means. Power and kindness - ah, what a good combination!" The boy looks nine or ten years old.

Just shy of half an hour later, the tea is done, and Flaust escorts all to the door. "I'll send what help I can, children. Good luck and blessings in finding those poor boys. You always have my prayers, you know, dears."

Harbor Master - DM Kim
Wednesday October 23rd, 2002 2:01:29 AM

The group departs the orphanage and makes it back down to the docks. The ship which hosted the acrobatics the other day - "Wild Harvest" its name - looks more shipshape. And the man who said he rented the boat is talking with a woman. He reluctantly hands her some coins. "Didn't mean to, really. It's like my head just went sort o' wacky for a bit there, ma'am. No, ma'am, won't happen again. Thanks again, ma'am. Haven't seen them, no. And I want that boat back, fer sure. Hey, here's some't ast me 'bout them. Maybe they can tell ya, ma'am."

The middle-aged woman he is addressing wears a long blue skirt. Her hair is sunbleached, and as she turns to the group, they note she has attractive features, but the skin of her high-cheekboned, lean and deeply tanned face is leathery, and her hands look well corded - not an ounce of fat, and used to work. "Well, what are you standing there, gawking about? You spoke to this man - which one of you? - about a man and two boys who left the Float the other night." She places two fingers in her mouth and whistles sharply. "Get that sergeant over here!" she calls out as a pot-bellied fellow looks up her direction from the next dock over. "I'm the harbor master here. Something fishy's going on, and I mean to get to the bottom of it. My name is Tarintha." /ta 'rIn tha/

In a few moments, Sgt Canty, who brought the boys' mother by last night, can be seen walking over toward the group.

Other odds and ends - DM Kim
Wednesday October 23rd, 2002 2:15:48 AM

Syr does know that there are telepathic powers that can affect others' minds, increasing suggestibility, modifying emotions, developing an aversion, even forgetting what they have seen, or misremembering events.

Barick's recollection is that the boat traveled westward.

To see photos of the gem that Barick gave to Mother Flaust, go to:
http://www.simplysapphires.com/blueons197.htm
By clicking on 'Show me More' you can get additional views of the gem. Gordo sees at once that it is one of the gems the Plateau City people had given him.

If someone wants to stop at Ilthelio's, he will be happy to see them, I suppose.

Drew
Wednesday October 23rd, 2002 9:16:46 AM

Drew stops and pays the gem master and then continues the investigation with his family.

Barick
Wednesday October 23rd, 2002 2:09:07 PM

On the way out Barick thanks Mama Flaust for her hospitality but is still amazed Krug was so tame with her. Walking down the street he looks at his companion sternly, "Krug I believe city life is already making you soft."
The wolf answers with a deep, throaty growl and a display of long, sharp teeth.
"Don't take it so hard. She was nice, though, wasn't she?"
A short whine returns his question.
"Maybe not all of these city-folk are all bad after all."

Barick and Krug catch up to Gordo, "Say friend, if you're going to look for those boys and that man I'd like to offer my help if you'll have it. I'd hate to find out the boys were dragged along against their will. While my skills are limited in a place like this," he says gesturing at the city, "once we hit solid ground Krug and I have been known to be able to find our way around the trees a little bit," he flourishes with a grin.

Turin
Thursday October 24th, 2002 2:26:53 AM

Turin looks at the sergeant, waiting, having missed much of what happened earlier.

Tionel
Thursday October 24th, 2002 2:38:11 AM

Tionel grins at the kind woman for her offer. He's used to giving free performances, once in a while, or being paid by just a bit of dinner...a good elf doesn't complain, his mother once told him. "I'll make sure I do, ma'am."
Upon hearing Barick's comment, confirming the previous statement, Tionel nods. "Well, our mysterious person must have headed west on a boat. It'll be more difficult to track him down on water..."
Later on, as they all arrive at the docks and see the harbormaster grilling the man, Tionel says to them (once she's called the sergeant over), "It appears that you were tricked into their service. Well, Ms. Tarintha, perhaps we can help you...the people who took this man's boat, obviously with magical help, probably are the same as those who accosted an orphange of its money. If they've already left the city, it might be hard to find them, unless we had a very skilled pilot..." He leaves it open to suggestions, as he's not very used to sea travel.

Gordo
Thursday October 24th, 2002 4:03:41 AM

The big man nods at Tionel's words. "Yes, it seems these crooks headed west, and we would very much like to follow them and bring them back to face trial for their crimes. I understand that your permission is required to take a boat out from the docks. Will you give us that permission?"

Syr
Thursday October 24th, 2002 4:06:04 AM

Syr explains to the others some of the mysteries of psionics. "It seems as though we have unearthed a secret group of psions," he says, explaining how the mind powers could be used to cloak the eyes of men, and be focused through gems such as the ones stolen.

"It seems as though they are preparing for some great event, and unless I miss my guess, it could well be to do with the festival coming soon."

DM Kim

Ilthelio's Exchange
Ilthelio, seeing Drew arrive with ~42 gp to honor the party's commitment, says, "You are a good, um, good fellow." He points to his right eye, and tells the half orc, "I'll keep my eye out for any more." He gives Drew a little salute with the same forefinger he used for pointing, asks if there is anything else he can do to assist, then bids farewell.

Sergeant Canty & Harbormaster Tarintha
Sgt Canty arrives as some members of the party begin to talk with Tarintha. He nods at the group, and says, "Yes, ma'am. These are the ones I mentioned."

Tarintha looks briefly at each member of the group. "So, you have a personal interest in these matters. Yet you promise to return them for justice. Very well - with a 15 gp per head harbor fee, I will write up permission for your expedition. Once you have arrangements for a boat, you'll have the grant within twenty minutes."

F.G. Offers a Choice of Two Boats
The man who rented the boat the other night holds up his hand. "I got boats. Call me F.G. One's got eight oars and a rudder. T'other's a small sailboat, got two oars and a rudder, f'course. Rowboat's 50 a day. Sailboat's 80 gold." He points them out. The rowboat could hold a dozen, maybe up to 16 cramped tight, and 'Miss Me?' is written on the bow. The sailboat could carry eight to twelve, and is named 'Miss Swift'. "I toss in one float board for each two people, no extra, case o' capsize." He indicates some wooden boards, 2'x2-1/2', with handles, a rope with a shoulder loop on the front, and two pairs of bladders somehow tied on the two sides. "I'll need three days rent up front, and refund anything ya don't use."

"You find the rowboat that feller took - it's green, called 'Miss Lonely' - bring it back, and I'll give ya a finder's fee."

And others
About this time a wirey figure cartwheels up to the group, finishing with a handspring, landing on his feet in front of F.G. "Boo!" he says to the boat dealer, who steps back, looking worried. The slender man laughs, says, "C'mon, Guts, I'm just kiddin'." He turns to the group. It's Gossman. The fellow who had the contest with Drew. "Hey!"

Walking up within a few seconds of Gossman's arrival is Fedjo - whom Syr and Drew helped out, inadvertently causing him to lose a bet. "'Lo, mates. Heard you might be goin' for a boat trip. Goss and I thought we'd stop by, see if ya needed help." He steps forward to shake Syr's hand.

Gossman stage whispers to Fedjo, "Yeah, yeah, but don't tell the big guy. He's not supposed to know," he says, cocking his thumb toward the half orc.

Krug growls briefly in the general direction of Drew and Gossman.

"'Course, just if ya wants us," Fedjo adds. "We know boats, just fine, we does. Cap gave us extra leave for this. Says it'll keep us outta his hair," he says, seemingly seriously. He turns to F.G. "Toss a few more bailers in there, F.G.," he says, pointing to the rowboat.

Jezebella
Thursday October 24th, 2002 8:19:49 AM

Jez follows the others, quietly. She seems preoccupied, somewhat, and occasionally glances in Drew's direction when he isn't looking.

Upon the offer of the choices of boats, she suggests quietly. "I think the rowboat would suit us better. I don't think any of us know how to sail... and I don't trust your playmates, Drew. Not after seeing how fairly they played at your contest."

Drew
Thursday October 24th, 2002 10:27:41 AM

Jezebella catches Drew looking at her quite a bit when she looks at him and he is constantly looking away quickly as if he weren't looking. The blush in his cheeks has returned and he seems distracted and stammering again. It occurs to her that Drew always seems to be there behind or beside her. Not in a creepy stalker way but in a quiet protective one. However, the more she catches Drew looking at her, the farther across the group he seems to move.

Gordo
Thursday October 24th, 2002 4:01:53 PM

Gordo readily hands over his 15 GP to the harbormaster. He welcomes the newcomers, and seeing how they seem to be on easy terms with the others has no problem with them tagging along. "But beware, lads, it could be dangerous!"

Syr

Barick
Friday October 25th, 2002 1:14:56 AM

Barick gives the harbor master his 15 gp. "Paying to be allowed to leave a place," he chuckles. "Civilization never ceases to amaze me."

To Gordo he says, "Danger is nothing new to Krug and I, we have seen our fair share. Let's not waste any more time though, their track is surely growing cold. Let us take a collection to rent this row boat. It is 50 gold coins a day but three days up front, 150 gold. There looks to be seven of us here so if we each put in 22 gold that will cover the rental and then some. Here is mine." He counts out 22 gold coins and looks to the rest of the group.

Turin
Friday October 25th, 2002 1:23:26 AM

Turin, reaching into his pouch, gets out 15 gp, and hands it to the harbormaster. He shrugs at Barick, and says, "Hey, from the law, it's at least not extortion."

Sgt Canty (DM Kim)
Friday October 25th, 2002 1:25:28 AM

"Harbormaster, they go on city business," interjects Sgt Canty. "We are investigating some actions of the man they seek. By the Overlord, and for the good of the city, I request you waive the customary fees."

Tarintha looks at him. "'By the Overlord,' you 'request'?" She looks at him straight faced for a quiet moment. Then the skin around her eyes crinkles up, just a little, and she returns the funds already given her. "The Overlord's request is my command." She turns and addresses Gordo. "If you have chosen the 'Miss Me,' then I shall have your departure documents ready quite soon."

She awaits the group's decision as to which boat they shall take, asks everyone's name, then goes to draw up the documents. In less than fifteen minutes, you have permission to embark.

F.G. asks about the boating proficiency of the group. If none confess skills in this area, a look of concern crosses his face. "Mebbe you should take the lads here. They knows their boats, they does."

Gossman does not wait. He jumps down into the boat, slowing his descent with a hand on the dock, and lands lightly. He quickly begins to put the oars in place, and checks over the gear. Stocky Fedjo stands on the dock, waiting to see whether he might come or not.

Tionel

The dark-haired elf watches the serious woman walk off to draw up the documents and sighs. Such people never take anything lightly. Well, at least he'd avoided paying...
"Well, we might as well accept their aid. At least they'll do a bit of the rowing. I'll admit that's not my best skill..." He grins ruefully.

Jez begins rummaging through her backpack when the rowboat is decided upon. She announces... "We have a fund, kind of, for expenses on the adventures that we of Flaust get into. The harbor fees being waived has no effect on this goodman's boat rental fee. Here you go, sir." She hands him 150 gold, which she had quickly counted out. She then joins her friends in the boat, settling into the unfamiliar vehicle with grace. (dex 21 :) )

After Gordo gives Gossman the go-ahead, the latter waves the waiting Fedjo on board, too. Everyone is seated, with the two sailors taking lead oar, one port, one starboard. Drew pairs with Gordo, and Turin and Syr find themselves at the last set of oars.

Surprisingly, with the sailors' lead and spoken instructions, the boat leaves the dock with a minimum of initial wandering as the new rowers try to figure out how to move the oars in the water. [DC 15, made 20.]

Just as they round the bow of the Wild Harvest, someone who just dashed to the end of the dock shouts for them to come back. It is ten-year-old Garl, from the orphanage. Soon behind him are two other boys, each carrying some middle-sized sacks. Fedjo talks the oarsmen into some reverse rowing, so that the stern of the rowboat butts up against one leg of the dock, the boys some six feet above them.

"Mama Flaust t-told us - b-br-bring this d-down," Garl says. The boys hand down two sacks, and Garl a pouch. "Good f-f-fishing," he says. The boys stand on the docks, waving to the departing adventurers until they are several hundred yards away.

Jezebella opens the pouch, and inside finds a small piece of parchment, with Flaust's writing.

Dears,
Not good to go hungry - enjoy the snacks. There's a big rib with meat on it for Krug, too.

If any are hurt, these three potions may help. Tell me as soon as you return.

Look for a tree with purple leaves.
Love,
Mama

The crew rows for nearly two hours before they get within a quarter mile of the foliage-lined shore. Tionel glimpses through the foliage a spot of purple leaves a few trees back into the woods a ways off the starboard bow, so the course is altered to head that way.

Finally the boat is beached, a perfect job the first try [DC 25].

A cloud canopy hangs overhead, and the air is quite humid this warm afternoon. Clothing sticks to the skin.

As the last member of the party sets foot on shore, the chittering sounds of insects and birds and who knows what come to a sudden quiet. It feels as though the forest is holding its breath.

Gossman looks around, and quietly says, "Hooo-wee. Kinda creepy, y'ask me. Fedjo and I'll stay here with the Miss Me, and you go on ahead. Unless ya really want us to come, but it might be better for someone to stay with the boat, just ta make sure it's here when ya need it again!"

After a few moments, the sounds of the jungle gradually begin to return.

Here at the landing site, the tree with the purple leaves is not visible, but you have a rough idea which direction it lies. The vegetation looks pretty thick, however, and it may be necessary to cut a path to make any headway on into the jungle.

Everyone go ahead and let me know what you are doing. And roll a d20 for your character. I'll apply the appropriate adjustments.

Barick  d20=17
Wednesday October 30th, 2002 1:08:54 AM

Barick disembarks from the boat and scans the tree line. He moves around the beach area checking for any signs of hostile life and makes sure nothing is going to murder the group as soon as they set foot in the jungle.

"Krug and I will take lead and scout ahead," he whispers. "We'll make sure there aren't any nasties lying in wait. We should be able to pick up the tracks of the boys too, if they're to be found."

"Well now, isn't this an adventure!" laughs the big man, slapping the back of whoever's nearest with great enthusiasm. Watch out for insects!"

And he sets off into the jungle with the others, seemingly unconcerned at the sweat beading on his brow.

Jezebella peers into the jungle, then back toward the shoreline. "Its a shame we didn't know about Mr. Barrik and his furry friend earlier.. we could have had the dog scent the wig and do some tracking for us. Without that option, I am going to trace the shoreline a bit in each direction... look to see if there are any signs of the other boat, or markings of a landing. Anyone wish to join me?"

"Aye Turin, let's go and see what we can find. Hopefully Gordo hasn't alerted the whole jungle to our presence yet," he smirks. "Keep alert Krug, this place is different, don't know what to expect." Barick stalks off into the jungle towards the direction of the purple leafed tree.

Tionel sticks around the half-orc and Jez, as one is particularly tough and the other the obvious candidate for sensibility.
"Sounds good... Jez, Drew, and I look along the shore a bit, while Barick, Gordo, and Turon, er, Turin," he corrects himself quickly, "will investigate a bit into the jungle. We'll all meet back here shortly, I'm sure. Just in case, though...here, let Mya here go with you. She can find me pretty easily, most of the time." Tionel whistles lightly, and a common black sparrow, the type that one would never pay notice to, flies down and lightly lands on his sleeved arm. He seems to speak with him slightly, though it's really just a trained response, and the bird warbles than takes flight again, but now hangs around them. "Just whistle to bring him down, and you can tie a note to his foot or whatever. Or he'll come to me if you guys get in danger."

(Sorry about the lack of posting, but I've had midterms this week. Ugh...)

Into the jungle (DM Kim)
Thursday October 31st, 2002 8:44:23 PM

Barick, Krug, Gordo, Turin and Syr begin to make their way into the jungle. The foliage is dense, and they have to push their way through - in some cases cut their way through the entangled vines and branches. There is no question of 'keeping it quiet' while going through. Even Krug finds forward motion difficult. Noise of sticks breaking, of stumbles here and there, of branches thwapping backwards after initially being pushed aside would make it difficult for any nearby not to hear. Except that Barick does not seem to have as much trouble as the others.

Along the shore it is not as consistently dense. But as Jez, Drew and Tionel walk along the shore, at one point, Tionel notices a small scrap of torn fabric - brown in color - on a branch about three and a half feet above the ground. Just a couple of feet beyond that, signs of passage of someone else are fairly clear. By this time, they are only about two hundred fifty yards away from where the boat was beached.

The recently-made path of broken branches leads diagonally into the jungle, and at least initially, looks like it might in time intersect with the straight-on-ahead direction that Gordo et al took.

Turin, just for a moment, felt as though something was probing his head, ruffling his hair from behind. He looks behind, and sees it is just a heavy vine swinging slightly from their passage. Stupid branches.

Krug, after a hundred yards on the new path, raises his hackles, and begins a low growl. But after a half minute, his ears resume their forward position, and his hackles subside. He continues pushing ahead.

Barick
Friday November 1st, 2002 12:45:08 PM

"I've never been in a place with such thick vegetation, this is amazing! Look at all these different plants. I've heard of such places but I'm truly in awe. I can barely move. Everything is so," he thinks, "heavy." Barick keeps pressing forward as he scans the environment for signs of whatever may be lurking within.

Turin
Friday November 1st, 2002 3:03:02 PM

Turin looks around, shivering. "This place gives me the creeps. Half the world knows where we are and it's next to impossible to see anything." He looks above. "I mean, what could be hiding up there? Snakes? People?"

Jezebella
Saturday November 2nd, 2002 6:55:16 PM

"Perhaps seperating wasn't the best of ideas. I don't want to shout, and make our quarry aware of us. Lets run back to our boat, and just remember where this is. We should be able to catch up to them if we hurry. I wish we had thought to bring some machettes for this thick vegitation."

Gordo
Sunday November 3rd, 2002 8:23:13 AM

Being in such a hostile environment doesn't seem to bother Gordo at all. Though bathed in sweat (he has removed his leather waistcoat and tucked it into his pants, leaving him bare from the waist up) he seems as jolly as ever as he clatters and crashes through the undergrowth.

Grinning at Turin he says "Ah, worry not lad! 'Tis a rare day when you get to see such marvels! Look at these plants! Smell the exotic perfumes on the air! Listen to those sounds! We have found another world, lad, and it is beautiful!"

He beams at Turin, then presses on, filled with the unwavering (and quite possibly unfounded) certainty that everything will work out for the best. He starts to hum a cheery marching hymn to himself as he wrestles noisily with the folliage.

Tionel
Monday November 4th, 2002 1:10:56 AM

"Sounds like a good idea to me, Mizz Jez. Actually, when we head into the jungle, let me lead the way. Tis unknown musical symphony to my forest-trained ears." Tionel stops, realizing he's being faintly abstract and probably confusing. "I get around well in most woods..."

Syr  d20=2

Looking at Turin and grinning, "Half the world knows where we are? I wouldn't worry too much about that, no one on the Big Float even knows where in the Wold the city is. If half the world knows where we are, can someone please tell them?" With a shy smirk, he puts Gordo between he and Turin.

The elf seems a bit nervous as listens to his own voice to determine reality, "You know, it's been so long since I was on solid ground. I've been on the Float for two decades. I always thought things were taller."

Recalling Mother's note, "Why are we looking for a purple tree again? err I mean purple leaved tree? How would Mom know where to look? Me and trees just don't get along."

In the jungle (DM Kim)
Monday November 4th, 2002 1:43:37 PM

The two segments of the party regroup with the Barrick - Gordo - Turin - Syr contingent, and the discovered pathway is mentioned. After a brief discussion, the group figures following the established trail makes sense. Getting there is not too difficult, as the way has already been trampled.

Barick
Monday November 4th, 2002 3:22:59 PM

"If Tionel takes lead then Krug and I will flank either side of the trail. If the boys have passed here already there's still no telling what they may have run into up ahead."

Barick motions towards Krug and the wolf stalks off to the right side of the trail while the man takes to the left. They begin advancing forward each keeping their senses keen to the foriegn environment.

Turin

And deeper still (DM Kim)
Tuesday November 5th, 2002 4:48:31 AM

Finally, after many scrapes, and stumbles, the party sees ahead a tree with purple leaves. Notably, sparkles can be seen among the slender leaves. The foliage surrounding the tree is still dense compared to most forests - but quite a bit less so than what the adventurers have been fighting and hacking their way through. Off to one side is a thick tree with brown bark -- and the sound of, what? Whimpering? Several one- to two-inch thick bamboos will need to be navigated through to reach either tree, as well as a few smaller bushes here and there. The purple one is about sixty feet ahead, and the brown one some twenty or so feet beyond that, to the right.

Make spot checks, and describe your actions.

Purple and Brown (DM Kim)
Wednesday November 6th, 2002 3:11:30 PM

Barick is the first to see some legs hanging down from a stout branch on the brown-barked tree. One foot is wrapped in dirty cloth, knotted at the ankle, and the other wears a shoe. The brown pants are torn in several places, and scratches are visible on the pale skin beneath.

On top of the branch sits a boy, maybe ten or twelve years old, his arms wrapped around the rough trunk of the tree. His dirty red hair is tangled, and a twig clings to the hair near his left ear. His brown shirt also is fairly torn up. His sobbing continues, and he does not seem to be aware of the party's arrival.

Jezebella comes and sees the same.

The purple tree is oddly beautiful. The finger-width leaves look soft and feathery. The edges are a rich purple, and the center of the leaf is of a lavender hue. The bark of the tree also is purple. Concentrated towards the ends of the branches are lavender flowers. Six petals surround clear and tiny crystals at the center of the flower.

Turin is the first to spot a figure in the tree above. Branches and leaves nearly encompass a gray figure. It's hard to make out, but it looks about the right size and shape to be a humanoid figure, wrapped up.

From the brown tree, the boy cries out, quite loudly, "RICA-A-A-A-RD! WHERE ARE YOUUUU!?"

Krug paces back and forth in front of the purple tree, but stays away from its foliage. The black sparrow, Mya, lands on top of a bamboo nearby.

Hearing the child's cry Gordo races over to the brown tree and peers up, a kindly smile on his face. "Hey there, youngun', you lost someone? Anything I can help with?"

He squats down at the foot of the tree, still looking up and smiling, as he opens his pack and starts to prepare himself some cheese on crusty bread.

Regurgitation! [DM Jerry]
Tuesday November 12th, 2002 11:27:35 PM

Suddenly the purple plant shudders. Then again.

Looking as if the plant has an adam's apple, the stem coils along with the flower and throws up, disgorging the occupant. The ponytailed man you know as your upstairs neighbor. Almost at the same moment, the other two boys are released.

A spirit steps ghostlike from within the plant and looks at Turin.

It whispers so that all can hear, "Turin, take these boys back ashore. Once there they will tell the truth. We will meet again Druid. I am a friend. Farewell."

The plant shrivels up and dies.

The two red headed boys are coughing. The ponytailed one looks stunned. He is covered in plant juices.

Oh the stench!

Two nearby trees begins to release feelers and ivey that starts creeping towards you!

Everyone hears the spirit: "Hurry!"

Barick
Wednesday November 13th, 2002 12:37:41 AM

Barick looks blinkingly at the disgorged crew, "Well I didn't quite think that would happen. I say we listen to that spirit and beat feet." He then runs over to the boys and scoops the smaller of the two under his arm as he begins running back to the boat. "Come on Krug, let's get out of here!"

Tionel
Wednesday November 13th, 2002 1:44:45 AM

Not wasting any time, the smooth-tongued elf steps between the plants and the boys as the plants advance dnagerously. "Hurry!" Gordo
Wednesday November 13th, 2002 9:02:59 AM

Ensuring that both boys are being carried to safety, the big man grabs the ponytailed man. If he is out cold he heaves him over one broad shoulder and carries him away from the creeping vines, otherwise he he helps the fellow away from the animated plants, making sure the fellow doesn't get out of his sight.

He moves swiftly through the jungle, sticking the the path the group cut down to get here.

Obey Me! [DM Jerry]
Wednesday November 13th, 2002 8:19:37 PM

Our heroes race along a cut corridor of plant pseudopods that seem to be regenerating at a rapid pace. Roots break the ground as if to grab those treading above and stop their pounding.

The trail seems three times as long on the way back as the party trips over vines and roots that grab and poke.

Then the lake comes into view and the boats. Hope is renewed!

Once out on the lake in the boats all is once again peaceful. The long-haired pony tailed freak of a neighbor who started all this comes to.

"What? You? Nah! No way."

He whips his head around.

He looks at Drew. Looks at him hard.

Then looking back at the man he speaks again, "Domi asks us to protect the innocent and so I will but if you were trying some sort of spell or something it didn't work. I'm thinking maybe you're just a bit out of your mind but if you were trying something look around you. You could have commanded me to keep three or four of these boys busy, but the other two would have put you out before you could say Jack Rabbit. So now we're going to get these boys back to their mother and you all will be questioned by the authorities. So you have three choices. One: I pick you up and throw you in the lake to cool you off and you take your chances with the things down there. Two: You take off into the Jungle which almost killed you once already, or Three..." Drew growls deep in his throat and gets right in his face. (Intimidate Of 21) "You can step into the boat while we go home and you don't even blink wrong the WHOLE WAY THERE."

Syr, making sure to check BEFORE he presses submit

Syr echoes Drew's command, "Hold! He has done nothing wrong. While the tone was quite rude, there could be many explanations for it. It's not every day someone gets coughed up by a plant."
He slides over to Drew's side and looks at him carefully for any sign of something out of the ordinary. "How is the boy doing?"
Going to one knee in front of the boy he asks, "What's your name?"

Obey Me? [DM Jerry]
Thursday November 14th, 2002 11:11:32 PM

Turin punches at the freak. Something about his eyes when he said that. The boy turns his body in the boat to look at Turin. The "look" causes Turin's punch to go just a bit to far to the right and misses. [Reflex check DC 8 or fall overboard]

Barick attempts a charge with a club in a boat! Again he meets the eyes of the freak. His club overbalances him, the charge attempt in the boat goes astray, and Barack falls head over heels into the water! [Swim check DC 10]

One of the red haired boys comes to and laughs at Barick's antics.

"Heh. Good work sir."

Gordo attempts to cuff the freak and perhaps discipline him as well. Typical adult. [grin] He catches the eye of the freak and misses. His attempt to steady the boat succeeds! [Gordo earns a hero point. Email me about hero points Carl if you have a question.]

The boy turns to Gordo and faking surrender with a sneer says, "Well sure sir. I'll leave the monster alone. But as for you sir?"

::he whispers::

"Obey me!"

[Gordo make a Will save at DC 12]

Anyone not attacking hears the whisper.

[So everyone can be involved in this finale, we're going to assume that everyone is in the same boat.]

Barick  d20+3=4
Friday November 15th, 2002 12:57:05 AM

Barick falls headlong into the water and seems to be drowning, sputtering and disoriented (Swim 4).

OOC: From bad to worse, I won't for get this lesson anytime soon.

Tionel
Friday November 15th, 2002 2:07:45 AM

The elf, somewhat unused to travel in a boat, barely manages to keep his balance. "Sit down, everyone!" He follows his own advice. Suddenly, he hears sputtering and splashing as one goes overboard and blinks...
Using his oaken stick, Tionel makes an attempt to save the drowning man by offering a lifeline, gently nudging Barick and hoping that the guy grabs on.

Gordo  d20+8=12 d20+5=20 d20+4=23 d6+2=7 d20+4=13 d20+3=15
Friday November 15th, 2002 4:57:53 AM

"I.. will... obey..." murmers Gordo, his eyes beginning to glaze over. Then he shakes his head furiously, breaking the man's control through sheer force of will (Will 12; phew!).

"Never!" he roars. Stay out of my head, I tell you! There's room in here for me and Domi and no-one else!" Gordo moves in close and attempts to grapple the pony tailed man (hit AC 20, grapple check 23 to pin, 7 HP subdual damage (not sure about damage, put it in just in case)), hoping to pin him to the bottom of the boat.

All the while he attempts to maintain his footing in the rocking boat as best he can (Dex 15).

"Drew! I could use a hand here, lad! And someone blindfold this fella, before he has us all hopping into the drink!" he shouts. "Anyone got any rope? He could probably do with tying up too!"

Drew  d20+8=28
Friday November 15th, 2002 9:08:19 AM

Drew unslings his Axe and roars louder than anyone has ever heard. "ENOUGH!!!!!!!!! THIS WILL STOP NOW OR THERE WILL BE PAIN AND FEAR THE LIKE OF WHICH YOU HAVE NEVEN KNOWN!" The ferocity in Drews eyes seems to be as fire, and the power in his form seems to pulse off the half Orc like magic. (INTIMIDATE NAT 20)

Syr  d20+7=24 d4+4=8 d20+4=20
Friday November 15th, 2002 6:15:23 PM

Syr looks up from in front of the boy and promptly cuffs him hard on the side of the head. (attack 24, subdual damage 8?). "You spend too much time with the freak, that is no way to address your elders. Maybe a year of doing the laundry for Mother Flaust will teach you some respect."

Keeping his center of gravity low, he easily stays in the boat (dex check 20).

Turin  d20+5=23 d20+5=22 d20+1=12
Friday November 15th, 2002 6:47:20 PM

Turin catches himself against edge of the boat (Reflex 23), and spins around, looking at the freak. "That's it." He pulls his chain and aims at his leg, catching and pulling, ready to drop the chain if necessary. (Trip attack, is a melee touch attack, hits AC 22, strength roll of 12, against his dex or strength, whichever is higher. If I win, he's tripped, if I lose, he gets a strength check against my dex or strength to trip, but if he wins, I can drop the chain.)

Hip Hip Hooray! [DM Jerry]
Saturday November 16th, 2002 2:17:37 AM

Barick catches the oar proferred by Tionel and is saved, despite his propensity to sink.

Drew causes everyone to cower and cease hostilities, even his friends.

Syr's cuff stops inches from the freaky-eyed pony-tailed boy's face after Drew's words.

The Pony-Tailed boy with the freakish eyes, is cowed as well and is easily chained by Turin.

The party safely returns to the harbor of the Great Float and is met by sailor friends and the city guard.

The poly-tailed boy and his cohorts are taken into custody and the gem is returned to Gordo.

The next day, the guard knocks upon the apartment door of the group and tells them that several cash rewards have been awarded to them for the arrest of Torl, the blond pony-tailed older boy with the freakish eyes.

The total of the 4 outstanding rewards for stolen property and mischief is:

9800gp

Black oak chests with the emblem of the Overlord now appear from around the corner of the building carried by city guards with huge grins on their faces. Flaust approaches from somewhere nearby smiling followed by cheering orphans!

Hip Hip Hooray!

Hip Hip Hooray!

Hip Hip Hooray!

In the crowd forming in the street, several sailors raise beer mugs in your honor and arm in arm parade down the street singing:

"The life of a sailor is a glorious one..."

Gordo
Sunday November 17th, 2002 5:05:02 PM

Gordo is flattered by all the cheering, but rather embarassed by it. He tries to disguise this by harumphing and looking a bit cross, but it is a pretty transparent act.

He turns to his newfound companions and smiles however, as he thinks back over the last couple of days. "Friends, I'm glad I met you all!" he grins , and he shakes hands with everyone."A finer bunch I've never come across. My thanks to you all."

Syr
Monday November 18th, 2002 1:08:11 AM

The elf takes the proferred hand and grins, "First hugging everyone and now shaking everyone. You sure are a touchy person." Softening his words, "However, I'm sure everyone will agree that your heart is bigger than your body. It was great seeing you again, why don't you hang around for a while longer. We have a small place across the street. You can stay with us."

Looking at the rest of the group he realizes how many new faces there are. Addressing everyone, "That offer goes out to everyone else too."
