Maidens of Mutilation

Visions (DM Stephen)  d100=33 d6=6
Tuesday November 5th, 2002 12:47:55 AM

As the party continues to bicker and discuss party treasure and magical items, old friends become reacquainted and meet new ones.

As the day rolls by the skies become slightly over cast . It appears that a crisp northern may be blowing in. However there is plenty of light left to see. The clouds are thin enough to be illuminated by the bright sun behind them. None of this appears alarming to the group but a natural occurance in the weather that you all have seen countless times. The temperature drops a few degrees and the wind begins to blow oh so slightly. The breeze filters in through the open door. (Im assuming you are inside a building. Correct me if I am wrong :)

(Everyone make a Spot check DC 12 and then a Intelligence Check DC 14.)

(To whom ever makes the spot check)
A beautiful maiden stands from outside the window. Long flowing brunette hair. She is stunning! Upon looking upon the woman, your mind is filled with her image. She stares at with alluring eyes. In your mind, you hear her speak, "If one eye of hope closes," and she closes her eyes, "may another eye open!!" When she opens them again, a disturbing image of a false metalic right eye is in place where her natural one once was!!

As soon as the images entered your thoughts they leave and so does the maiden in the window. She turns away and walks off.

(If you made your intelligence check!)
You recognize her as one of the maidens in your dream.

Trace and Radiant  d20+9=29 d20+2=18
Tuesday November 5th, 2002 1:53:54 AM

Trace looks at the window and sees a beautyfull maiden and then becomes worried at the change in apperance. All of a sudden he realizes that she is the one from his dream. Trace jumps to his feet calling out to his friends to keep an eye on him. He makes his way out the door and calls out to the maiden to wait. "Miss! Please I beg of you to wait. I must talk with thee." Trace continues to walk to here but keeps a safe distance.

Sly Foxx and Luke  d20+6=21 d20+3=13
Tuesday November 5th, 2002 10:20:31 AM

Sly was talking with the rest of the party, Sly spots the Beautiful maiden, but does not recognize her. As sly is about to go back to conversation, Trace get up and runs after her. "I wonder what has gotten into Trace?" But Sly will go to the door and watch what trace is doing.

DM Stephen
Tuesday November 5th, 2002 10:39:08 AM

Sly's mind is invaded with the image of the maiden and the disturbing artifical eye. Her message is heard and still rings in your ears.

(IF you spot the maiden, you see the disturbing vision and hear the message in your head [in your mind]. The intelligence check is only an attempt to recognize her from your dreams.)

Ilsidur (Cayzle subbing)  d20+4=12 d20+1=10
Tuesday November 5th, 2002 1:40:05 PM

The dwarf cleric sees the maiden but does not recognize her. He leaps up and follows Trace to the door, keeping him in sight.

"Let's not split up our group," Islidur says.

Shiraz  d20+1=13 d20=1
Tuesday November 5th, 2002 8:15:13 PM

"hmm thats strange, I dont believe I have ever seen a woman with an eye of metal before..." Shiraz muses to himself as Trace and Isildur walk out of the tavern.

Savin
Tuesday November 5th, 2002 10:31:05 PM

Savin rolls his eyes and follows along.

Sir Thomas  d20=7 d20=17
Tuesday November 5th, 2002 11:22:40 PM

[Rolled 7 + 2 WIS = 9 Spot, INT roll is obsolete.]

Slow like a fighter should be, Thomas misses the image. "What woman? Where are you guys going? A metallic eye? That's really unnatural ... and kind of gross if you think about it. Could she see from that eye? How is she pretty with a metallaic eye?!?" Thomas follows like a big, dumb, obedient dog asking questions the whole time.

[OOC: ok, so that was very out of character, but kind of fun.]

Jurgen and Vus  d20-1=4
Wednesday November 6th, 2002 12:44:03 AM

[Spot Roll: Failure with a 4]

Jurgen completely misses the woman, too transfixed on Vus. He plays with the dog feverently, running around and generally causing havoc. Then Sir Thomas begins to talk strangely, unknowingly even...

And Jurgen takes this chance to be dumbfounded with the paladin, he just shows it in a different way. Being generally quiet and silent. Vus just sniffs around, continuing to blink. A rather nasuating effect, if Jurgen hadn't gotten used to it.

Visons 2 (DM Stephen)  d100=69 d6=4
Wednesday November 6th, 2002 2:40:55 AM

Trace, Ilsildur and Savin take to their feet and head outside to meet the maiden. It's so strange. Their movement is like in slow motion. As they round the corner ... she is gone!!

Everyone begins to notice a mist float in. The minds eye plays tricks as everyone sees shadows of things that aren't there!!! Movements of figures swaying and dancing, move graceful and fluid through the mist.

Trace, Ilsildur and Savin's eyes frantically look around. They fail to spot the disappearing maiden. Their movement becomes slower and slower, like in a dream. A dark silhouette approaches Trace from the mist. Another beautiful maiden walks right up to you and whispers in your ear. Amazingly, everyone can hear her words in their minds. "The hearing ear is always found close..." Up walks another maiden from the mist. She puts her arms around Ilsildur as if about to give an embrace. IIsildur is frozen in place, just like everyone else. She says, "... the hearing ear is always found close to the speaking tongue!" With that being said she gives Ilsildur a passionate kiss!! In shock, Ilsidur feels something cold and steely in his mouth. Suddenly both maidens back away from the heroes with mischievous smiles. The second maiden brushes away her long hair to expose a metallic ear. The third opens her mouth to show a metal tongue!

Savin feels cold fingers running across his back and shoulders. The feeling sends a chill down Savin's spine. From behind, a fourth maiden walks by and meets up with her sisters. She lovingly rests her head on the shoulders of one of the other maidens. With a smile, she waves a smooth metallic hand at you. All three are strikingly beautiful.

Back inside, where the rest continue to sit, frozen in their seats, the mist swirls even thicker. A fifth maiden materializes from out of the drifting void. She has a more serious look about her. She glares at you all with metal nose. She flings her arms out wildly and in a sudden burst, the walls go up in flame. Fire climbs up the walls and spreads horizontally across the ceiling. A dark outline of a large winged figure rises out of the shadows from behind the 5th maiden. Laughter from the dark figure echoes and stings your ears. The only words from the shadowed beast are, "Itty bitties... itty bitties... you all hide in your cities. I will leave you blackened, burnt and gritty!!!"

In a bright flash of light, everyone wakes up from where they were sitting before. Trace, Ilsildur and Savin never left the room. There is no fire, no mist, and no monster. However, five beautiful brunettes stand before you. They are without any metallic parts, all natural. You find yourselves able to move and speak freely. The whole experience is rather disorienting! The "dream" does seem to be over.

The maiden who had the false hand speaks, "Greetings Heroes, we could use a helping hand... among other things!!" Three of them start to giggle amongst themselves. The fifth maiden gives the other three a stern cold stare. "In all seriousness, we need your help... or all is lost to the shadows!"

(Make a Int. Check DC 6. With all maidens present, it takes little effort to recognize them all from your nightmares.)

Wednesday November 6th, 2002 8:58:22 AM

Sly wakes up all sweaty looking up to find these five beautiful maidens. They Look just like those maidens in his dream, but whole in body. Sly that they look a lot like the maidens in his dream but these girls are no nightmare (he hopes). Sly rises to his feet, "My name is Sly Foxx and my Dog is Luke. How may I help you?"

Shiraz  d20=17
Wednesday November 6th, 2002 11:11:25 AM

Shiraz stands up with a start his musings over, and looks around. Seeing the mist disappear, and the maidens from his dreams of fire appear, the huge taur chokes of an oath and very nearly draws his swords. "By all that Imod has blessed what in the name of his hammer is going on here?" Shiraz glares at the maidens, "You come strangly to ask help from us, who was that woman with the eye and who exactly are you?"

Gwen (DM Stephen)
Wednesday November 6th, 2002 12:09:55 PM

Playfully the maiden who appeared first (the one with the eye) skips forward and hops next to the Shiraz. Giggling she proclaims, "It was I you big muscular minotaur ... ohhh what big muscles you have!!" She runs her hands down your arm. She pouts, "you didnt recognize me standing there?!"

As Shiraz looks upon her, she has two beautiful natural eyes.

Ilsidur (Cayzle subbing)  d20+1=8
Wednesday November 6th, 2002 1:33:45 PM

Fairly put off by that kiss (human girls are not usually the dwarf's type), Ilsidur is a little stymied. But, he muses, as he sets his beard right, "Eye, ear, nose, finger, tongue. I'm not sure that talking to you is the sense-ible thing to do!"

"But I know you from dreams," he says. "What can you tell us about the winged beast that brings fire? Is that the danger you mean?"

Ilsidur concentrates on the broken spiral on his hand -- does it feel different from usual?

Savin
Wednesday November 6th, 2002 3:38:23 PM

Savin gapes at the 5 maidens who have suddenly appeared. He composes himself and says, "I have only been with the Southern Lights for a few short weeks but have come to learn and appreciate their character. Though they are frolicsome at times they do serve good and I am glad to associate with them. They always seem ready to help goodly folk" Savin arches an eye at them trying to decide if this group is goodly.

He pauses and stares at the stern one. "You seem to have some control over your sisters? Why do you seek us out. By your unusual and might I add disconcerting entrance, you obviously have powers of your own. Why do you come to us?"

Trace and Radiant
Wednesday November 6th, 2002 3:48:34 PM

Trace stands up and walks to the maiden, "What can you tell us of this beast and its location. Do you know if it has any simular enemies around this land that would benifit from its demise? I for one have extream distaste for fire wyrms but do not want to leap into its mouth in haste. Where do yall hail from and how is it that you need our help?

Sir Thomas  d20=20
Wednesday November 6th, 2002 10:01:41 PM

OOC: rolled natural 20 for INT check.

Thomas starts, just like the rest of his friends, from the dream-like state. He politely stands at the presence of the five maidens and quickly thinks to himself that he is glad that he did because his reaction was very childish and inapproprate. He quickly grabs his attention while the maidens taunt and muse with the group. He also takes a moment to ask Domi's blessing to help him discern the intent of these five maidens (Know Alignment). "You remind me of five old crones that used to inhabit this area. Except for your beauty, you are more similar than I probably realize. They guard the portal to the realm of the dead now though. Like them, you are very vague. I pray you, tell us more of your needs and surely we can see fit to help you." Like Ilsidur, Thomas begins to focus his mental energy into the tattoo on his hand after he finishes speaking. He tries to make it burn and glow, to know the thoughts of his friends and of the maidens, and to warn him of danger or of potential friendships.

The Problem (DM Stephen)  d100=5 d6=6
Thursday November 7th, 2002 9:10:32 AM

(Sorry for the wait. Ive had some connection problems at home, but they are fixed now. Thanks for your patience.)
------------------------
Sly quickly determines that the images remind of the fabled Crones. Sir Thomas comes up the same conclusion.
(what is this Know Alignment ability. The spell only exists in 2nd edition.)

The "dominate" maiden answers. "I apologize for being vague ... maybe we should be more ... direct!!" The 1st maiden backs away from Shiraz. They all start to grin devilishly. The air becomes blustery as the "leader" proclaims in a loud voice. "A great injustice has fallen upon the land." All the maidens, one by one, begin to speak together like a choir. "We, the new Crones, prepared to take our rightful places. But a beast denies us our birthright and therefore our post goes unguarded .... IIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" They all begin to scream with loud piercing shrills. The winds become more fierce and swirl all around you. Any lose papers and light objects are tossed about. In the flash of a bright light, you all find yourselves thousands of feet up into the sky. You still feel like you're standing on solid ground, but nothing appears beneath your feet.

"Behold ... the enemy!!" They all point to a spot on the horizon. A huge winged beast approaches. The closer it gets, it becomes quite clear what it is ... A RED DRAGON!! The dragon flies by at amazing speeds and begins to circle for another pass.

"Yes ... the Red Dragon is named Tumult. The beast stole our artifacts and without them we can not fulfill our destiny and the land will fall into the shadows!"

The Red Dragon returns and prepares his breath weapon. The dragon throws back his head and prepares to blow!!

Trace realizes that he has nothing to hide behind to divert the attack and his natural hate for dragons rises to the surface as he draws an arrow and secures it in the noch as he trains his eye on the fire wyrm. Trace lets loose his arrow (hit ac21 with 4hp dmg) Without hesitation he lets go of a second arrow (hit ac17 with 4hp dmg). Trace covers Radiant and braces himself for the wyrm's breath.

Sly never knew hate before untill now, he must do something BUT What? Sly will grab his Rod of Ice, aims it at the red dragon on his return run. Sly is about to say the magic words. . .

Savin
Friday November 8th, 2002 9:01:21 AM

Savin doesn't believe that he is way up in the air. He can still feel the wooden planks beneath his feet...at least he thinks he can. He starts moving away from the group so the dragon breath can't get them all and prepares to dive away if necessary.

Shiraz shouts, "Quickly, move spread out, I will engage the front and try to keep his attention, attack his flanks and tail." Shiraz draws his 2 swords and smiles the feral grin of one about to do battle after a long break. Not even considering the fact that this could be an illusion or fake Shiraz growls and sets for his attack. AC 27, 13 and nat 1 misses.

Ilsidur (Cayzle subbing)
Friday November 8th, 2002 11:37:10 AM

Seeing that Sly and Trace have not scattered, Ilsidur casts his Magic Circle vs. Evil -- centered on himself, including Trace and Sly in the effect (10 ft radius), as well as anyone else nearby, and including the young Crones, if possible.

If he has time, he also takes out the Wand of Ray of Enfeeblement to use next round.

Ilsidur too is suspicious that it is a vision or illusion, but he wishes to take no chances.

The maiden continue to scream. Three maidens fall from the fire. The continued screams become focused in a sonic attack that pound into the dragon. The dragon recoils from the attack. Tumult shakes his head to clear his mind from the concussive blow. He growls with rage and prepares for another blast of fire.

OOC: I note that Sly, Trace, and Shiraz did not add in the +2 from Ilsidur's spell. It didn't matter since Sly made it and the other two failed by more than two. BUT keep it in mind as you roll saves (and if you use hero points to reroll saves)!

ADD IN THAT +2, FRIENDS!

Savin sees the fire come his way and he rolls away using his evasion feat. He seems to be unhurt from the flames but adreniline could be pumping. He knows his friends are in danger and charges towards the dragon waving his arms and shouting, "Ha! You worm from hell! You are nothing but a giant eguanna. Try to roast me! I am to quick for you!" Savin knows he was lucky in the first attack but he knows many of his new friends can't survive another and tries to draw fire. If he can close the range he will attack, most likely hurting his hands on dragon armor

The mage blinks several times, trying to get his bearings. He glances for a moment at the people yelling orders at him, and he snorts derisively, then glancing up at all the commotion.

At the sight of the dragon turning once more, he ignores the presence of the others, quickly casting a spell and attempting to fly out of range of any other attacks.

He shouts, "I have a magic circle that will give some protection versus the dragon attack, but I think we should spread out, and not let the dragon attack us all at once, unless someone has a globe of power that will protect us all from the flame!"

Sly takes the Rod of Frost and lets loose a Cone of Cold (Im assuming. Please name the spell and roll the damage. 10d6 = 38 points damage. Reflex save DC 17. Rolled 16, FAILED!!! Lucky!! ). The Cone of Cold slams into the red dragon. Tumult cant move out of the way and takes the full damage. He wales in pain. Surprisingly the Red Dragon seems to take far more damage then was given.

Shiraz slashes into the frosted dragon. However all attacks miss!! His blades bounce right off his scales.

Trace yell in pain as Radiant falls to the earth. He casts protective spells.

Ilsildur heals the fallen Sir Thomas who gets up and charges the dragon. His attack misses.

Savin tries to draw the dragons attention. His attack falls short of causing any damage.

The stranger takes to the air. Who knows who he is!!

The maidens release another screaming sonic blast at Tumult. The dragon, again, shakes off the blast, but takes some damage!!
-----------------
Tumult roars with rage at the "Itty Bittys" attacking him. The dragon begins to speak in draconic as he appears to be casting a spell. (Combat Casting, Concentration check 29. Successful. No attacks of opportunity allowed). The spell goes off and his body becomes bathed in flame. The flames dont seem to hurt him. It seems to bring him much comfort as the ice melts away. Alfric's mind still reels at the thought of what is going on. Certainly, he had read of dragons before, but he never considered the possibility of encountering one. And certainly not in this situation, where he was at a loss of what to do.

He tries to refocus, at least enough to buy more time. His hands dance in the air, and he opens a portal between the planes, calling forth an air elemental to keep the dragon occupied for a while.

The swirl of air appears right before the dragon, sending out a blast of wind at the creature.

Sir Thomas (19 hp)  d20=13
Tuesday November 12th, 2002 11:56:50 PM

After missing his attack Thomas kneels in pain and frustration; his burnt and melted shield drops from his left hand. He doesn't know why he woke up, but he's still confused about all of that and quite sure it was Ilsidur's doing. While on his knees, Thomas touches himself with an open palm and cures himself with Domi's grace (lay on hands 15 hp - TOTAL now 34). Thomas runs to Trace's side in preparation of helping his friend.

During all of this Thomas' thoughts focus on only one thing. He is in a trance-like state as he performs the curing and running ... Thomas' mind is focused solely on his tattooed hand, on being the curse and the cure. He feels the anger involved with facing such an evil creature, he lets his emotion course through his body. He feels energized as a prayer to Domi conjures itself into his thoughts. "RING THE BELL!!" Thomas yells as he runs toward Trace. It's not a well thought out phrase, but it is all that Thomas can do.

Facing certain death with his friends, Thomas refuses to give up hope. "Hope is the thing with wings. Hope will set us free."

Keeping Tumult in sight, Thomas rushes toward Trace ... doing anything he can think of to make his hand throb and his destiny work for him and the rest of the Wold of goodness.

Nothing continues to be felt from the tattoos. Prayers to Domi yeilds no words of wisdom. Only feels of fighting the good fight and trusting in yourself and becoming all you can be.

The maidens turn back at the party. The purest sense of urgency is expressed on their faces. One maiden shouts in panic. "Why do you hold back. We all will surely parish if you dont fight!!!" Their faces are mixed with fear others with rage and contempt.

A furious whirling air elemental appears in front of the dragon. Its sudden appearance startles the dragon, but then he continues to laugh. The wind it generates doesnt seem to effect his flight. The dragon seems not to be dependent on the air for flight. He seems only to use his massive wings for better manuevering and bursts of speed!! The dragon continues to hover in place.

While everyone stops to heal and regroup the dragon bellows, "Foolish foolish Itty Bittys ... Muewahahahahahaha!!! You make this too easy!!"

Suddenly Tumult's eyes begin to glow and he hisses, "Get sicky you Itty Bittys!!" His gaze enduces a sickening putrid feeling in your gut. (Free Action spell-like ability. Make a Will save DC 20 or become sickened. All who fail recieve a -2 to attack and lose dex bonus to AC. Loss of Dex will prevent any abilites that require dex, such as Evasion.)

The dragon begins to flap his wings to move. The air elemental flies in his way. (Strength checks: Huge Dragon 32 vs. Small Air Elemental -1). Even with the elementals mastery of the air, it hasnt got a chance of stopping the furious dragon.

Tumult moves and then hovers above the group, right above the stranger (wizard).
(Shiraz, Trace and Savin are allowed attacks of opportunity.) Then Tumult lets loose another blazing cone of fire. The wide base of the cone of fire spreads out in a 100-ft circular area, engulfing everyone with searing flame. (Fire damage 58 points. Reflex save DC 21 for half damage. If you fail the reflex save make another Fort save DC 15 or die instantly from massive damage.)

All you hear besides of the sizzle of your burning flesh is the dragon's unrelenting laughter.

Trace still feeling the loss of his friend Radiant he continues to let loose arrows at the dragon. His first arrow finds its way in a true spot and sinks in deep. DM Stephen: Spell clarification
Thursday November 14th, 2002 9:37:30 AM

Protection from Elements (Fire):
This abjuration grants a creature temporary invulnerability to damage from whichever one of five energy types you select: acid, cold, fire, electricity, or sonic. When the spell absorbs 12 points per caster level of elemental damage, it is discharged. The spell protects the recipient's equipment as well.
-------------
The spell does not provide a damage reduction to fire every round. Once the fire damage depletes the 24 hitpoints it discharges.
-------------
(Yes this is insanity!! :) Chaotic isnt it!! All will become clear soon. It's what it means to be a Child of Chaos. Im sorry I couldnt post last night. Will have a post as soon as possible.)

(Sorry for the Tom Petty song title!!)

Trace strikes the dragon with his first arrow. The dragon grimaces in pain. Blood squirts out from the wound and onto Trace. It is hot and slightly stings. Steam from his boiling blood trails out of Tumult's wound. (Trace's Protection from Elements spell has discharged.)

Savin tries to hit the huge lizard but both attacks merely bounce off his red scales. The flames that burn around his body damage Savin for 10 points of damage.

Alfric flies back and casts Invisibility on himself. Tumult laughs and bellows, "Ah ... how charming, the Itty Bitty thinks I can't see him." "FOOLS, I can see you with my eyes closed," boasts the dragon!! He looks right at you!! (Make a will save DC 20 or be sickened. Gaze attack still in effect.)

The last remaining maidens go up in flames. (two failed saves, one saves, but all still take lethal amounts of damage.) Sly, Shiraz, Sir Thomas, Ilsildur also take lethal amounts. They all start their free-falling back to earth.

Feeling the pain from Trace's arrow, the red dragon decides to end this conflict. He begins to cast a spell. The words of draconic echo and ring in your ears. Then with a snear the dragon says one word ... "Dispel!" Sudden the area below Trace and Savin's feet begins to glow ... and then the light fades. Trace and Savin begin to free-fall with the rest of their party. (Your in a freefall with lots of violent winds rushing past you. Any spellcasting will require a Concentration check DC 15+spell level.)

Tumult then turns his attention back to the "inivisble" wizard and flies over him. He inhales for another hellish breath of fire. (I think you know what happens next turn!!)

Alfric once again manages to resist the nearly overpowering gaze of the mighty dragon, even as it turns itself once more upon him.

Glancing over as the others turn to ash and/or plummet to their deaths, he wonders why and how he was summoned for such an ignoble death. Surely he didn't deserve such a thing. Only peasants and serfs died so pointlessly.

With little to do, however, he searches for a possible way to escape the final end. He suddenly turns and shoots downward as fast as he can, then dispels the 'fly' with a word.

Plummeting headlong towards the ground far below, he considers that he might manage to outpace the flying dragon and its breath weapon..for at least another few moments..

Falling (DM Stephen)
Friday November 15th, 2002 1:42:20 AM

Everyone falls though the air. Anyone alive enough to look up see the dragon getting smaller and smaller in the distance. Even the sheets of searing flame that follow Alfric down cease their chase. All you can hear is the wind and your beating heart. Bumba bumba bumba bumba (heart beats). Everyone enters a passing cloud... it becomes very dark as its mists embraces you. The wind doesnt seem to howl so loud now, nor tug at you so hard. All seems peaceful. Are you alive ... are you dead?!

The cloud is so thick ... you cant tell which way is up or down anymore. Are you still falling?!

Visiting Kosh-Marr (DM Stephen)  d100=24 d6=6
Tuesday November 19th, 2002 2:31:38 AM

Your falling seems to slow and the thick mist begins to clear. Each one of you feel solid ground below your feet. Then suddenly a cold breeze blows by and you all are shocked by what you see. You dont appear to be dead. All wounds seem to be completely healed. The whole group stands around you ... even the new guy, the wizard.
The maidens are also there. They appear unhurt, however they stand hand-to-hand with frowns and stare at the ground. All joy is absent from their expressions. In unison they begin to speak as one.

"Welcome to our second death ... welcome to Kosh-Marr." You all look all around and see the land blanketed in mist and shadow. The surrounding plant life appears shrivelled and wilting. The scent of death is in the air. "This is what will happen if we do not succeed in our quest. The land will fall into this dark realm. A place of dark powers and dark beings. Where no soul enters the lands of rest and the dead walk the earth as freely as the living ... if you consider this living!"
Humanoid figures stumble and moan in the distance ... they pay you all no mind.

"If our artifacts can not be returned to their rightful owners, this vision of shadows and mist will come to be!"

Sly turns to the Five Maidens,"So this is what going to happen, we'll all end up in Kosh-Marr the land of the dead, the end of the Children of Chaos." Sly turns to Sir Thomas, "Well! now we know what we have to do. Help the Maidens to reach their Quest, return the artifact must be returned. I know that this has to be an allusion, because we don't have our pets with us now."

Savin
Wednesday November 20th, 2002 7:58:29 PM

Savin folds his hands calmly at his waist and addresses the group, "The vision told us who our main adversary is going to be. We need to start planning on how to tackle this red wurm. I think we need to look at our tactics. Access our strengths and weaknesses and those of our opponent. Two obvious advantages that it has are its breath weapon and its ability to fly. I believe that we need to to try and take those strengths away from him. We will need protection from fire and ways either to limit his flight or give ourselves the ability."

Savin starts pacing, "I don't have any real money to throw into the communal pot. I do have some magic that helps protect me. I am willing to sell it, to help raise funds for magic that is more appropriate for this battle."

Savin spins and drops into a chair, "This fear attack is also worrisome but I believe the other two abilities are a bigger potential threats." Savin looks up and realizes that he has been lecturing. He goes red in the face and stammers, "I apologize gentlemen, I understand that I am a relative newcomer to the Southern Lights. I don't mean to put myself forward."

"Sorry for my outburst I have never been so throughly beaten by anything before. You are quite right to say what you believe and to asses our strengths and weaknesses." Shiraz turns to address the newcomer, "And who might you be?"

Dark Omens (DM Stephen)  d100=34 d6=6
Thursday November 21st, 2002 1:17:35 AM

Before any of the maidens can respond, a horn is sounded in the distance. It echoes over the countryside. The sound makes you all feel sick. The tattoos on your hands begin to get warm. On the tops of the surrounding hills overlooking the town, legions of armored warriors march into view. They are far away, but it is easily understood that these warriors are hordes of undead. The stench adds to your nausea. Tattered Banners are raised, more horns are sounded and the air is filled with the rhythmed clanging of sword against shield. As you all look around more and more of the army popps up into view from behind the surrounding hills. Literally tens of thousands raise their voices in a long shrieking cry above all the clamor. Like a massive choir of dread!!

The maidens swiftly put their hands to their ears and scream as if in pain. The visions of death, mist and shadow melt away. You all find yourselves back in the room before the battle ever began. You all feel free from the illusions and it is like breathing a breath of fresh air.

The lead maiden looks at you all with a smile. "Alright gentlemen, lets get started." Over on the table is a large scroll. With one look from the maiden, it unrolls itself!!

Sir Thomas  d20=17
Thursday November 21st, 2002 1:21:06 AM

Returning to his usual state of mind, Thomas rushes toward the five maidens. He stops just short of them, thrusts his sword into the ground at their feet, and kneels before them. "My sword and my soul are at your service. I know this will likely mean my death, but it will be for Domi's honor. I do not fear death when I consider Domi's embrace." Thomas stands and looks at the crones. (Rolled 17 + 10 = 27 for Diplomacy) "Ilsidur has taken the questions right off of my own tongue. Even with your assistance, we were no match for Tumult in this dream. If we are to face him without you we will need some kind of advantage. We have many questions to answer and many more to ask, but what we need from you is anything you can give us. We need to know all of the details. Filling us with vague understandings and incomplete ideals will only get us killed and bring this fate to the Wold." Thomas waves his hand around at the desolate surroundings. "Please, Crones, tell us all you know and bestow us with any power or items of use that you have at your disposal. Tell us about Tumult's lair. How do we find him? Can we sneak up on him? If we get magic to help us can we set a trap for him? Can we lure him underground. What is he most susceptible to? Tell us how to use the Power of the Chaos Bell. We have seen limited use of this power, but have failed to establish a voluntary link to it. Tell us of the artifacts. If we should beat Tumult, how do we restore them to you or their rightful place? How will we know them when we see them? Is there a possibility that we could just steal them back without having to fight the dragon? Can we recruit help? Do we have access to dragons with good intent that we might convince to help us? What about an army of men to distract the beast while we lay a trap or steal the bounty? Please, tell us all you know and leave nothing out."

Thomas stops speaking when his face turns blue. No hint of humor enters his tone of voice or his actions in any way. He draws a deep, thoughtful breath and adds, "it is a shame I will not see my family again. I have missed them. They will be proud of the result we will produce ... I have no doubts about that. Friends, new or old, we have a job to do. We will band together. There should be no more speech about the length of our friendships. We will sacrifice together so that we will walk away together. If we don't we don't even leave ourselves the option of success. I am prepared to sell all that I own save my holy symbol, sword, shield, and armor. We'll need to account for food for us and our animal friends."

Trace walks to the Crones holding studed leather armor in his hands. "Please, can any of you identify this? It would help me out greatly in my fight against this common enemy. I came across this as a reward from my last encounter and would like to know if it will help me in future battles. I need better protection from fire, my Illusion has shown me that my spells are limited and weak against such a foe. My bow and sword was but a pin prick to this wyrm. I will sell all my weapons and equipment and see if I can outfit just for this one enemy. I have allways heard that Dragons keep a fair amount of gold and items around in their lair, so to replace or upgrade if I live it should be no problem." Trace begins to lay out his equipment and asses the value and use of it against the dragon that lies ahead.

I plan on inquiring on the cost of an enchantment on my sword for cold and some fire resistance along with flying potions. Oh and cure serious wounds potions. I think the bill my be quit extensive but worth it. Does anyone object to me in quiring about the enchantment?"

I think they'll get us at least a little money and I don't use them enough not to trade them for something that might get us through this challenge." Thomas gives Trace the following items: splint mail, a bastard sword, magical bar of soap, miniature magical chocolate moose, spike +1, Horn of fog production, and a non-magical masterwork mace.

"Also, don't forget that the goup has this money and these items: Pouch, bottle, mace, dagger (all magical), 4 smokesticks, and 3 bottles of Alchemists fire from Raven's obelisk . Use it wisely; it might be beneficial to identify the items because they might be worth more if we know what the enchantment is than if we just sell them as random magical items."

"Hold on, Trace. Sir Thomas, you say you have a magical mace that you don't want anymore? Would it be alright if I use it? I use a mace as a back-up weapon, and I don't have any magic weapons to use, in case we run up against a creature that requires magic to hit it. Sir Tom, if you don't know what the magical mace does, maybe Trace can get it identified at the Catacombs while he is carrying out our other business."

The Plan (DM Stephen)
Sunday November 24th, 2002 11:50:26 PM

"The artifacts in question is the Hand, Eye, Tongue, Ear and Nose of the Crones. Each of us will take our artifact and become one with it. Then we shall have the ability to ward off the dark energies and keep his land in this reality.

As you look at the map you can see it is about 5 days journey to Tumult's liar. It is very surprising that the liar is in such a populated place. Roads and trails run all around it. "The one maiden speaks, " Yes, you would think the locals would notice a dragon about, but out in the open, in front of everyone, is usually the best hiding place. This dragon is quite clever." Another maiden speaks, "Yes, he has powerful magic that keeps our scrying eyes away." A third maiden speaks, "The only way we found his lair was to follow the dragon with our own eyes."

The map illustrates a dorment volcano. Atop the mountain is a crater (the old mouth of the volcano). In the crater a small lake has formed. At the opposite end where the trail enters the crater is a cave. A cave that is marked as the entrance to Tumult's lair.

Sly is right. There is a branch location of the Catacombs in town. Anything you can get in the Catacombs, you can get there.

Sly looks at the map, "Yes! This Red Dragon is very cleaver, Since I'm half Human and half Elf, I'm going to be the dragon favorite ittsy bittsy tippsy bittsy, I'll be the first one he'll go after. I don't think any of the Maidens wants me." Sly will take his Book of Magic out and sit in a corner to study some magic spells.

Shiraz

Shiraz looks over at the party, "I have 1000 gold left if the party has a need for it, you are welcome to it."

Sir Thomas
Monday November 25th, 2002 2:08:02 PM

"Actually Ilsidur, the magical mace is the group's possession. I think you should get it identified and use it. I'm sorry it wasn't brought to your attention sooner. Maybe we should discuss whether we want to sell or keep the items after they are identified. However, I think we all should have some protection against the dragon AND have a way to hurt the beast. Although, it might not be such a bad idea to have one of us make a break for the artifacts while the rest of us distract Tumult. Haste and Fly and I don't know what else would be helpful for that individual. This might pose a way for that individual to escape with the artifacts and complete our mission even if the rest of us die."

Savin
Monday November 25th, 2002 7:35:49 PM

The monk speaks up, "Who ever is going to this magic shop, needs to think about offensive weapons as well. We will need to take down this dragon quickly. I doubt that he is working alone. I wouldn't be surprised if he has minions at his beck and call."

Ilsidur
Tuesday November 26th, 2002 12:08:04 AM

Ilsidur takes the mace from Sir Thomas and says, "Thank you young man." Then he turns to the rest of the party and asks, "Can anyone here identify the magic on this mace?" If no-one is able to identify the mace, he asks Shiraz, "Could you lend me 150 gp to get the mace indentified at the Catacombs?" [OOC: Stephen, do you want me to roleplay the identify, if necessary, at the Catacombs, or do you just want to process it here?]

"I agree with Savin; we need to do a huge amount of damage early on to the dragon. I suggest if you wizards don't have any cold-based damage spells, you purchase some scrolls at the Catacombs."

Sly Foxx and Luke

"Big Brother, give Ilsador 150 gp out of my share of coins. Ever since we died toghter I'm a little attach to him>" teases Sly.

Trace and Radiant
Tuesday November 26th, 2002 3:31:14 AM

Trace tells Sly he will buy the +1 bracers to use and give him money later if that is ok.

Trace heads out with bundles of itmes to sell and identify and sell and a shoping list as well. He makes his way in the catacombs and speaks to the store keeper and lays out the items he needs to sell, "12 Silver arrows - 3 (+2) Arrows - 1 Scroll case/a scroll of shield - 4 Moon Stones (50GP each) , 4 smokesticks, and 3 bottles of Alchemists fire from Raven's obelisk, +1 longsword with blue pommel that can hold a cure light wounds spell, +1 studded leather armor.

I also need these items identified, Pouch, bottle, mace, dagger (all magical),

I need prices for potions of haste, flying, fire resistance, also a weapons list of cold damage or dragon damage. I also need a price on how much to enchant my keen sword with cold damage. Then last time I checked it was 1000gp to add an enchantment. Also do you have any rings or amulets that might benifit me or my friends in our fight against a red dragon?

Shopping Spree (DM Stephen)  d100=2 d6=6 Not a good roll!!
Tuesday November 26th, 2002 10:53:07 AM

The more vocal maiden, Megan speaks up. "I hope you are not forgetting, the Dragon has spells too. Cold damage is most affective against the a red, yes, but dont you think he has abilities to protect himself from such attacks. Remember the battle, when he cast a spell and his body became engulfed in flame. The ice melted away and caused you damage whenever you attacked him." She turns to the wizard, "How are you to quench his fire magic? That will give you a true advantage!!"

Trace makes his way to the Catacomb branch. (yes we will role play that here). The clerk sits back reading a book and drinking a cup of tea. After you say what you want to buy, the clerk looks up and points at a tile dispenser with numbered tiles. He then quietly returns to reading his book and takes another sip of Earl Grey.

(Party's Initiative. Wont be available Wed. or Thr. so think long and hard about more ideas and strategy. I'll be researching what these items are.)

Sure looks good Sir Thomas."

Savin

Savin looks at the feast and decides to follow
Thomas to the Catacombs. He figures he might need some help carrying all the stuff back and might be able to offer some advice. As he walks by a shocked and scared look will cross his face. "Oh NO! Not again! When Sir Thomas looks away, he will filth a turkey leg and scamper after Trace.

Alfric  d20+12=27 d20+12=30
Wednesday November 27th, 2002 7:28:58 AM

(Rolled Knowledge: Arcana and Spellcraft)

The unknown figure had been simply listening the entire time, simply trying to grasp the scope of what was going on, and trying to understand where exactly he was.

The group certainly seemed competent, but they were sorely lacking in the strategic department. He followed along as each of them spoke, but when he could take it no longer, he offered his own opinion, with no introduction whatsoever.

"It's no wonder you were slaughtered like pigs by that beast. Clearly, you have little sense of strategy, nor do you have any concept of what a dragon can do..."

(OOC: Gotta love that low charisma)

He stpes forward, assuredly, and begins to relate his ideas.

"First and foremost, to avoid the primary attack of the dragon, resistance to fire is of most importance.

First, to defense
I know you have already discussed this, however, Protection from Elements, even with a higher level caster, will most likely not protect against more than one attack. In addition, you must remember that the spell will most likely not last longer than an hour, so unless we are aware of the dragon's proximity, we may have to spend the crucial few moments in the beginning of combat getting ready.

The other possibility is equipping a single character with a ring of elemental resistance, either minor or major. This effect will be constant, but the obvious limitation is that it will only protect one person, and it could be cost prohibitive. A minor ring can run fifteen thousand, while a major would be over twenty.

For those that will be entering melee combat with the creature, there is also the matter of making sure they are well armored enough to survive. The advantage of making sure someone can engage the dragon toe to toe is that it might prevent the creature from attacking the others with its breath weapon. In addition, if two or more could manage the attack, it would also allow them to take advantage of flanking opportunities. In order to keep up with the dragon, in case it flies, I can grant all of the melee fighters flying spells. Once again, however, I will need to do that early in the battle, which may prevent me from casting other spells.

Now, to offense.

The most efficient method of combat is to find as many dragonbane weapons as possible. These weapons would not only do more damage, but also make it easier to hit the creature. The cost of an average dragonbane weapon would be eighteen thousand, but the expense would be well worth it. If funds are limited, it is important to buy those weapons which can be used multiple times in combat, such as a sword in the hands of a skilled fighter, or a bow in the hands of an archer.

(OOC: Dragonbane weapons gain a +2 bonus and do +2d6 additional damage. Probably the most economical weapon enhancement)

For those with arcane abilities, wands of lightning bolts may be the best choice. Remember, our goal is to cause as much damage as possible over a short period of time. While it may certainly not seem interesting to simply fire bolts over and over again, it is probably the quickest and most difficult to resist method of damage. The dragon may be aware of its vulnerability to cold, but it is unlikely to prepare a defense particularly against electricity.

Understand, however, that the dragon has already demonstrated a resistance to magic, and so in some cases, the attack may have no effect whatsoever. That is simply the nature of the beast.

For the healers, I would recommend some way of protecting those that can cause the most damage. I would be naive in thinking that all of us will survive this, but if our most powerful and well-equipped fighters die, all of us will soon follow. Perhaps there is some way to help them avoid damage? I am a bit unfamiliar with clerical magic.

(OOC: I would say Shield Other, while holding a wand of cure moderate wounds, to be able to heal yourself while you take half the damage - but Alfric doesn't know that) ;)

On another note, the dragon also has the ability to cast spells, so we may want to consider a wand of dispel magic. It could be used by one of the spellcasters to attempt to disrupt the spellcasting each time.

Another option is a wand of haste, which could be used as quickly as possible during the early rounds to increase everyone's abilities."

Alfric considers for a moment, then shakes his head. "That's all I can think of at the moment."

Continue the strategy talk, you're going to need it. I on the other hand, am leaving town for Thanksgiving with my family. I hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving. I will have to get back with you about what magical items you have to sell. Talk to you all later. I will be back this Friday evening and will be available for questions all weekend.

Shiraz
Wednesday November 27th, 2002 8:35:14 PM

"It seems to me that you have no idea what I can do either finger wiggler!" Shiraz pulls himself up to his full height of eight foot and glares down on the frail caster in front of him. "You speak of strategy? I see that your little friend was swept away as easy as us and that you escaped by flying away instead of helping us. I dont know you and you dont know me as far as I am concerned it can stay that way!" Shiraz plainly turns his back on Alfric and faces his friends.

"Alfric, I'm open for all kind of advice. I never face a dragon before, But I know my animal lore. One thing that we elves are sure of is we don't like Dragons." Said Sly. "He won't be easy to kill."

Alfric
Thursday November 28th, 2002 5:31:07 AM

Alfric takes half a step back as Shiraz rises to the occasion, his fingers twitching at his side as a spell hangs on his lips.

As he turns away, the wizard relaxes once more. "Ah, but I survived. As I recall, you were doing a rather good impression of a medium rare side of beef. I do not intend to be anyone's martyr."

He glances the the elf as he comments and nods. "I agree that the fight will be challenging. The most important thing is to maximize or damage potential, while protecting us from its most powerful attacks."

"But I am at a disadvantage, as I only know what I myself am capable of as a conjurer. What exactly -is- the rest of this group capable of?"

Ilsidur
Friday November 29th, 2002 12:27:14 AM

Ilsidur frowns at Alfric's response to the minotaur. "You are right, Alfric. You did survive the mock battle with the dragon. However, a number of us were seriously hurt, and we could have used your help. With your flight spell, you might have been able to swoop down and get one of the more seriously hurt in our party. I only hope when we next enter a potentially lethal combat, that you will stick around and help. Our party watches each other's backs, and we often put ourselves in danger to help each other. Please let me know now if that kind of activity will be a problem for you, so we know what to expect from you."

I have dispel magics available to try to cancel the fire shield spell that the dragon cast on himself.

Sly Foxx and Luke
Friday November 29th, 2002 9:38:24 AM

Trace and Radiant
Friday November 29th, 2002 2:42:32 PM

Trace takes a bit of turkey from Savin, "Thanks for the Turkey, We have just over a 3500 gp's plus if we can figure out how to get back to hook city we can sell off the surplus of armor. That should allow us to aquire some really powerfull weapons. When we get back I think the priority should be to get back to Hook City to get more money."

Shiraz
Friday November 29th, 2002 8:43:09 PM

"Go away little mage, you may be quick to run, but I am not going to leave friends to die." The taur says without turning around. "I dont like your attitude and Ilsidur is right we protect each other I may die for my friends but I am sure they would do the same for me."

Sly Foxx and Luke

Savin
Saturday November 30th, 2002 4:43:24 PM

Savin takes another bite of turkey leg and asks, "Where is Hook City and what happened there? Remember I just joined up with you folks. How long will it take to journey there and back? For some reason I don't think we have a whole bunch of time."

Savin ponders for a while and adds, "I need to get some kind of weapon myself. I have never battled against anything as large and deadly as a dragon before. I fear my fists and feet are not up to the task. What would you suggest?"

Alfric
Saturday November 30th, 2002 7:08:52 PM

The uncharismatic wizards listens to the comments of the group, then watches half of them storm off.

"One of my tutors told me that honor and courage make for fine epitaphs. Make no mistake, I was clearly brought here for a reason, and this dragon seems the most likely purpose. But I have no intention of making myself a martyr for -any- cause. You may all find solace in sharing the same funeral pyre, but I intend to do everything I can to make sure that I'm one of those left alive after all of this."

He goes on, not particularly caring if anyone is listening as they walk away.

"But, considering the fact that I'm probably the only one that can provide you any comprehensive discussion of magical strategy, perhaps you can manage to spare all of us your noble, brotherly diatribes and get down to the business of actually -planning- this attack?"

"Or do you just intend to march bravely into death, wishing for the best and cloaking yourself in your flame-proof honor?"

"So..once more, I will ask again. What -is- this group capable of? What are your abilities? Without each of us knowing -exactly- what each other is capable of -and- what each of us intend in combat, then I would have better luck hiring a band of mercenaries to aid me in killing this dragon."

He glances to Sly for a moment and nods. "Yes, it would be of both our benefits to exchange spells. I'm sure we'll have time while the others are preaching about how loyal they are to each other, when they should be actually talking about a plan."

OOC: Should I post Alfric's spellbook somewhere, or email it? I don't want to clog the list with spam.

Alfric
Saturday November 30th, 2002 7:11:12 PM

The wizard looks to Savin.

"If there is a weapon of any sort that you can use normally, I can prepare a spell that will make it capable of damaging the dragon. It may be cheaper to enchant the weapon for a short time, rather than try to buy one."

"But it's your call, of course."

Jurgen and Vus
Sunday December 1st, 2002 4:58:30 AM

[OOC: I return, really now... No more stupid stuff from me. Jurgen, sure... but not me...]

A white doorway opens up, a few feet from where the party is discussing things, and a voice can be heard faintly.

"Hey everyone!" Suddenly, Jurgen appears in front of the 'doorway' with Vus, the Blinkin' Hound, beside him. A grin is on his face and seemingly on the dogs as well. They both appear to have no worries at all.

"I've been listening to you guys and I figured out what happened. Anyway, I wanna help out. I figure that you'll need me. Someone who is calm and neutral to this situation. Someone who isn't bickering about pointless things..." As he says this, his eyes go to the new Alfric. But they quickly go back to the map.

"Mister... Alfric is it? Yes, that sounds close enough. This groups 'brotherly diatribes' is what has kept them both alive and strong, for so long. They have fought evil so great that it brought some of the most brave to their knees. So they know a bit about battle..." He winks at Ilsidur, then starts again. "Still, Alrfic... or is it Arfilc... Appears to know a lot about magic. Which is really good, because I'm the only other one in the group who's spent their entire life based on magic, I think. With his help, we should be able to put together a great plan to destroy Tummy." He puts his hand forth, to Alfric. "I'm Jurgen, Child of Chaos, Magic and Josephine..."

Sitting down, Jurgen begins pulling things out of his backpack and his pants, which seem to never end...

"Here's all the money I've got left... I'll put it towards the group money. Although I've got a few ideas for what to spend it on..." He grins, pulling three draw-bags off of his belt and tossing them on the map. Two go clink and one goes clunk. "A bit over 3,000 gold in there. In assorted forms, of course." [Gold [138]
Platinum [80] (800 gp), Gem Worth 100 Gold [9] (900 gp), Gem Worth 500 Gold [3] (1500 gp)]
He looks over the map, running his finger along the path and tapping on the crater a few times.

"Potions... Scrolls... Wands... Tree..." [Cure Moderate Wounds Potion [2], Cure Light Wounds Potion [2], Potent Potion of Darkvision [10 uses], Potion of Haste, Mage Armor Scroll [4], Spider Climb Scroll [2], Sleep Scroll, Tenser's Floating Disk Scroll [2], Mirror Image Scroll, Fly Scroll, Dispel Magic Scroll, Invisibility Scroll, Light Wand (Fifty Charges), Silence Wand (Three Charges), Quaal's Feather Token [Tree] [2]] He sets then all out, organized neatly and carefully. Then he begins to quietly mumble to himself. The odd word is heard. "Fire... Day..."

"What if we dropped tree's on him?"

"Foolish foolish pride," naggs Megan. "Stop this childish bickering!! You belittle this great cause by prancing around, showing your feathers for all to see. We dont have time for all this male fluffery. So leave your egos at the door!!" In her rage, the other women winse and slightly shrink from her words. "My Gods, is THIS the best we can find, I just ...." she suddenly stops and turns around, with hand to forehead, she tries to collect her wits.

Megan turns back around the puts her hand on Lauren's shoulder. Lauren then takes the dominate position and begins to speak. "Please forgive me for my harsh words. Frustration and stress wears away the already thin vale of my sanity. Just let me remind you that we picked you for your honor and your goodness. Each of you bring something unique to this cause. Each of you is a vital person in this quest. For that reason alone, can we all, please, put what ills we have aside and work together. You will need to if you will have any chance of survival.

Back at the Catacombs, the clerk puts down his book and swallows the last of his tea. He then stands to the counter and states, now serving customer 2! As you notice, 2 is the next number on the tile dispenser. No other customer is there.

(Still searching what those items are. Will find out ASAP. Party's Initiative.)

Sir Thomas
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 2:21:18 AM

Thomas can't help but notice the hypocracy in Megan's voice as she shows her "feathers" to be bright as any of the males involved in the bickering. He decides for the sake of diplomacy and to move on to let it go. Too bad he didn't get his two cents in while the getting was good.

"Well friends, there is more to our debate I'm sure, but the sisters are right. We have to get over it. I think it is a reasonable concern that we hold though. Without trying to bring up the debate again, I want to point out that we, the Southern Lights, definately need Alfric, but we are concerned about his reliability. I definately don't want to be counting on anyone and then find that support to not be there when I need it. I think that's our concern more than honor at this point with the challenge of Tumult looming over us.

"On the subject of planning. I am a paladin of Domi, the god of war. I am obviously a fighter, but in our dream I had some difficulty getting my sword to penetrate the dragon's scales. I will have Pryte with me. He is faithful and would be glad to lay his life down for such a cause as this ... if it calls for that of course. I have only two spells at my call, but I can adjust those into something more useful than what I've prepared for today. Once per day I can call upon the power of Domi to assist my blade in its cleaving ability, but that will not be a huge deficit to Tumult's vast strength. As far as squaring off with the gigantic beast toe to toe, I will be that diversion. I will require some anti-fire protection if that is to be the case. Pryte can get me very close to the beast in a hurry. I wander if I had a lance if it would assist me in hurting Tumult more. I can charge and that would assist in my ability to hurt him. I will not charge if Pryte does not also have fire protection though. I really feel that I have limited ability to help this cause because I don't have powerful magic, nor powerfully enchanted weapons to help me hit or penetrate the dragon's scales. I will do my best though."

Lauren sighs at the words of Sly with a warm smile. The rest of the maidens, except Megan (who is still trying to calm down), reflect the same smile, "My dear Sly, we have faith in you." Each one dances over to Sly and tickles him lightly with little kisses on his cheeks.

More collected of her senses Megan turns around. She turns to Sir Thomas and walks over to the map. "Your steed may be quite useful on the trip there but as you can see on the map, the dragons lair rests deep into the side of a mountain." She points to the cave entrance. "It is a dragon lair after all, you may be forced to do some climbing. Would you be willing to lower a large warhorse down the side of a cliff or expansive drop. Of course there would be sufficient room for the Tumult's treasure but it is not known what it will take to get to that point."

Penelope and Heather (two maidens) suddenly turn their heads to the east wall, as if they heard something. Megan continues to talk. "We have talked about the Tumult's strengths ... what about his weaknesses. There must be something we can exploit!"
(Everyone in the room make a Listen check DC 15.)

Back at the Catacombs ...
"Well I assume you want these items identified. Let me take them to the back and have our mage look at them," says the clerk. And he does just that. The room is very quiet. Not much activity.

Jurgen and Vus  d20-1=6 d20+8=20
Wednesday December 4th, 2002 1:47:34 AM

Jurgen watches the crones with interest, but begins to work his mind to its fullest.

[Jurgen's Listen Check: Failure with a 6]

[Vus's Listen Check: Success with a 20]

If they didn't stop Tumalt, then the Southern Lights and the Children of Chaos would be no more. That wasn't something Jurgen was up for particuarly...

"First of all, the Dragon seems to have a large amount of trouble with Sound attacks. The crones kept screaming at him, more or less, and each time it hurt him. So we need items that are loud. Now, amazingly, Thunderstones could be made avaiable. [You can check the exact definition later, but they cost 30 gp and they create a sonic attack...] Unfortunately, they are easy to just throw off. So their right out of the door, unless we could get them right in his ears. Imagine have one of those crones scream in your ear, echoing off all the walls. That's the effect I'm hoping for. A huge problem with that is getting into the ear. What it would mean was, we need disractions. We need people who can take his attention while other people, with fly cast on them [either by Jurgen or Alfric. It seems we've both got them. Although it seems sounder that Jurgen does, as he has to cast it anyway], get into his ears. This probably wouldn't do damage, but it would make him deaf. Making it possible for some of his spells cast to fail. That's definately a bonus. [Also, a Horn of Blasting could be useful for that... I don't know. Really stretching our cash might be able to pull it...]"

He starts muttering to himself, then wipes his eyes and forehead. Tears and sweat... Would it soon be blood too? Had Jurgen ever faced something as horrid as a dragon? Had Jurgen ever known that he was probably going to die? No, on both counts... But then again, had Jurgen known the costs of becoming a brave hero? Yes... So if he had to die, then so be it... Although it really wouldn't be fun.

"Another idea, although this one seems like a sure death... I still has a few leftover Feather Tokens, of the tree variaty. Imagine a tree sprouting from inside Tummy's belly... Kind of a messy sight, but it gets the job done. So someone would have to be eaten by him. There are two ways of doing this. Either by having the strongest person in there, although that was lessen their ability in a fight to stay alive as either a distraction or an attack. The other way is to have the weakest. Which would, almost definately be me [25 hp go in and pray... Throw down four of those tree tokens and whatever else I could get in there. There is a chance that I would survive, but it seems slim... Unless I could be outfitted with some sort of protection against acid [hopefully that would lessen the damage of the digestive acids... Stephen?]. In Vus, here, was willing to Dimension Door me into Tummy's tummy then I could pull it off easier... And I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.[Quoting the great Winston Churchill... Or not so great. I'm really unsure]"

He smiles meekly, he was talking about near suicide... He might not have a single chance while inside Tumalt's stomach, but that wouldn't make him give up. Jurgen would fight and fight, until the very last bit of his life was drawn out of him. 'Anybody is able to die for a cause... But only the strongest were willing to live for it'

"Now to disable the "Fire Breath" would be an AMAZING advantage over this dragon. Unfortunately, how many ways can you stop him from doing this? Well... Water might be a way. If we could get our hands on a Decanter of Endless Water, we could find a way to get it into his mouth [use this along side of the jump into the stomach idea?]. He'd could breath fire, but he could also spray out water at 30 gallons a round. That might be a way to go about it. Honestly, though, I'm unsure if that would work. Also, it's a lot of putting all our eggs in one basket. 9,000 gold on that... Unless someones got some extra cash kicking around that they could donate... Almost everything I have is too cheap to be of use. Although, when it comes down to the wire, that bit of cash may be exactly what's needed.

And... He lives in a Volcano. Is there any way we could use that to our advantage? Pushing him in seems pointless..."

Jurgen's finger is slowly rotating around the volcano on the map, as if the battle was going on in his head and his finger was the dragon, circling prey.

"If we could find a way to bring the Dragon out of the Volcano, we wouldn't be fighting on his terms anymore. Regardless of what we do to plan, if we're in the Volcano, he's got an advantage.

Finally, I've been thinking a lot about tricking him. Dragons love treasure, right? Well, why not make him think you can get large amounts of treasure to him. One of us goes in, does this, while the rest of the group prepares to ambush him. In the end, this may be the best way to get the jump on him..."

He looks to the group, a grin on his face... Lots of plans in his head, although he didn't know if any would work...

Sly Foxx and Luke
Wednesday December 4th, 2002 10:18:31 AM

Sly face blushes over the fuss the Maidens, not moving them away either. But as best he can, he'll answers Jurden question. "The weakness of a Red Dragon depends on their age, but all the Red ones are mostly can be damage by cold, snow, ice anything that freezes. Also if someone could cast a Silent Spell on his mouth would help a lot."

Trace and Radiant

While Trace waits for these items identified, Pouch, bottle, mace, dagger (all magical), he lays out the items he needs to sell, "12 Silver arrows - 3 (+2) Arrows - 1 Scroll case/a scroll of shield - 4 Moon Stones (50GP each) , 4 smokesticks, and 3 bottles of Alchemists fire from Raven's obelisk, +1 longsword with blue pommel that can hold a cure light wounds spell, +1 studded leather armor.

I need prices for potions of haste, flying, fire resistance, also a weapons list of cold damage or dragon bane. I also need a price on how much to enchant my keen sword with cold damage. Then last time I checked it was 1000gp to add an enchantment. Also do you have any rings or amulets that might benifit me or my friends in our fight against a red dragon?

Shiraz looks at the crones and tilts his head and shakes it. "I have 1000 gold pieces left what do we do with it is the question?"

Savin

Savin is thinking and says to trace, "We need things that would definitely hit the beast. I know it is a basic spell, but how about magic missile. They won't miss and if we get some scrolls, it will give our mages something to do when their more powerful spells get used. Shouldn't cost to much and they are reliable. I also think we need to think about the dragon's allies. In our visions we saw lot of undead. We might be fighting the dragon's minions before we get to him. Most evil leaders sacrifice their shock troops, before they come out and play. We need to be prepared for this."

Sir Thomas

"Wow, you have a lot of great suggestions Jurgen. I wonder about the feasability of some of them though. Being eaten will probably get that individual killed before they got to the stomach ... chewing.

"Even if we can silence the dragon, would he have the ability to cast spells without using verbal componentry?

"I'm most concerned about drawing the dragon out. If we can keep him confined I think we have the best chance. If we can find a passage in the mountain that will restrict his movement, I think we'll have the best chance against him. I understand he'll probably have multiple magical traps set up to protect his home, but we'll have to risk those anyway when we go in. I think to let him out into the open will be a mistake ... although I do like the idea of tricking him into coming to a spot designated by us. That way we can prepare for him before we see him.

"How heavy are those feather tokens? If someone got close enough to his mouth, just before the dragon tried to bite them they could throw it in. maybe ... doesn't sound like it has a high rate of survival or success though.

"I'm at a loss. I'm also concerned that our weapons are going to be like pinpricks to the beast. Can anyone cast a semi-permanent cold enchantment on my blade before or early in the fight? I wonder if I have that ability in my limited casting cache. I'll have to think ..."

[OOC: listen roll successful with 22]

Ilsidur adds a couple of points to the conversation. "It seems to me the three key things that resulted in our 'defeat' are: first, the incredibly brutal breath weapon that the dragon was able to use, and to hit all of us with consistently, at will. Second, the dragon could fly, and focus his breath weapon to catch all of us, and stay out of reach, and the only one of us who could fly was high-tailing it away from the battle. Third, we were not able to cause any significant damage to the creature, except for the cold attack that Sly was able to use. Could any of you mages identify the spell that the dragon cloaked itself in that had the flame effect?" [OOC: try your Spellcraft rolls.]

He turns to the ladies, and asks, "What was that voice attack you used on the dragon? How did it work? Is there something similar, a spell or magic item, that we could use to the same effect?"
