Nonam  d20-3=0 d20-3=12
Thursday November 14th, 2002 8:51:05 AM

Nonam wonders a bit about the river of blood.

[Well, Nonam gets a 0 for his will save. And a spent hero point gets it up to 12]

Tericus  d20+13=32
Thursday November 14th, 2002 8:51:45 AM

(will save of 32)"Stay close together." Tericus tells everyone. "If we get seperated, I doubt that we'll be able to find each other."

John  d20=5 d20=5
Thursday November 14th, 2002 9:46:55 AM

Like Nonam, Jus wonders about the comment of Blood. There is only one place that he's aware of where blood can be a problem -- and it sends and involuntary shiver down his spine. (will save of 5; hero save of 5)

Jus follows the group in, glad that the stranger joined them. "So... what should we call you?" Jus asks the man.

Clangden  d20+13=27 d20+9=10 d20+9=18
Thursday November 14th, 2002 10:59:33 AM

(will save dc27 )

not sure what to think about mr. dippy, Clangden does listen to his instructions and abides by them. assuming there is a path nearby, Clangden assumes the head position, knowing the stranger will pull point.

(spot check dc1, hero point reroll dc18 )

looking around for the Overlord, and anything that might present itself to us as danger, Clangden does his S.O.P.

(s.o.p. standard operating procedure ie.. senses on full alert, shield up, axe ready )

(ooc Jan, shouldn´t we get the Hero Point awards from the last adventure before we get too far in this one? )

Addinein  d20+7=26
Friday November 15th, 2002 12:53:22 AM

Following the others into the mist, Addinein hears the other man's words echoing in his head.

(Will save 26)

DM Jan
Friday November 15th, 2002 1:18:33 AM

((Early next week Tim, I promise))

Things become clear as soon as the Gargul cleric closes the portal. The mists drift away leaving an alien landscape which none of you have seen before.
Black upon black, grey upon grey, shadow upon shadow. There are no trees, no particular landmarks. The ground undulates slightly, but its mostly flat. It appears to go on, and on, and on. It's utterly monochromatic but for one exception - for at ground level are small streams that glow bright red.
The red looks like blood, as thick as broth, and all the streams seem to be flowing in one direction, connecting in the far distance, growing into rivers with a more powerful flow.
These streams and rivers are the main light source, offering the equivalent of twilight.

Above, is what looks like a night sky, without the usual cloud, moons, and stars. Instead, every once in a while a pinpoint of brilliant light shoots high overhead, heading in the opposite direction to the blood flow.

"My name is Torel," says the big man as Jus asks. He continues, his voice deep, and certainly loud enough for everyone to hear.

"We are now in a place that exists between the Living Wold and the Isles of the Dead. This is the Shadowlands, where our dead souls must pass, carried by the streams of Woldsbl - Gargul's eye!! Is this a trap?"

Okay -
Apart from the strange landscape, two things become immediately obvious. Both are potentially and equally life threatening.

1) All that whispering inside Nonam's mind, is now in the mind of everyone, seeping into every nook and cranny, seductive, powerful, calling you to the streams of blood - "come, sleep, this is your demise, sleep, rest here..... time to die."
It is relentless. It never stops.
Some of you are able to control it, push it aside. Others of you will find it difficult to varying degrees - it will become hard to concentrate an anything other than that voice in your head. For some, it will eventually mean temporary insanity that only a visit to a Gargul temple will cure.

Use the one off Will Saves you just made to adjust your stats by the following:

Will Saves 25 and below: -2 Will Saves, -1 Concentration checks, No Wisdom loss.
Will Saves 15 and below: -4 Will Saves, -2 Concentration checks, 1 Wisdom ability score point loss every 10 hours.
Will Saves 5 and below: -6 Will Saves, -3 Concentration checks, 2 Wisdom ability score points loss every 10 hours.

The lower your Wisdom, the more insane you become. In role play terms, each character may choose what form that will take - denial, fear/horrified, unhinged, delusions, depression, hallucinations, whatever.
If your Wisdom score reaches 0 - you fall into a deep, comatose sleep full of nightmares.

Also - last but not least -

2) All around and shuffling toward you is a large group ( maybe 200 or more) of undead - ghouls, zombies and some skeletal forms in rotting robes. Their intent is obvious - some of their arms are outstretched, some are moaning horribly. The first of them are only 50 feet away.

One of them trips over something on the ground. It looks like a peacock feather mask...

Your initiative, gentlemen.

Tericus  d20+2=21 2d6(4+6)+15=25
Friday November 15th, 2002 9:03:27 AM

not affected in the least by the voices in his head, Tericus moves ahead of everyone and holds his symbol of Alemi in front of him. "BEGONE, CREATURES OF EVIL!!" Tericus yells as he attempts to turn the undead creatures(highest level undead affected is 16hit dice, can turn a total of 25 hit dice, effects the closests ones first, if they are 6hit dice or less they are destroyed instead of turned)

Nonam  10d6(5+5+4+6+3+6+6+5+1+5)=46
Friday November 15th, 2002 9:51:08 AM

Nonam takes out his wand of lightning and cuts a swath through the center of the undead.

Once the spell goes off, Nonam gives a big roar, "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Something like a tiger.

[46dmg, reflex for 1/2 DC20]
[well Nonam's going to be insane pretty fast]

Clangden
Friday November 15th, 2002 11:24:11 AM

watching his partners turn to combat, Clangden looks at Torel and says: if this is the land of the dead, then we can stand here all day battling them and not run out of the enemy. You are the expert here, do we stand and fight or do we move forward, and hope to lay some ground between us and them (pointing to the mob).
seeing the peacock mask Clangden exclaims: that there is the mask the Overlord wore for sure, she has definately been brought here. (i know, it's obvious, but someone had to be the blonde)

Clangden, awaiting Torel's instructions, positions himself between the casters and the mob of undead, waiting for them to get within his killing grounds.

"We don't have time to kill them all - try and forge a path ahead! We can easily out pace them. But we must keep our eyes open for the girl. Gargul's mercy they haven't taken her already! Follow the flow - and watch your feet - don't step in any of those streams!"

All around are ghouls, armed skeletons and mohrgs with ready fists.
The might of Alemi, powering through Tericus causes devastation immediately around him. 12 ghouls explode in a rather messy manner, and Nonam's lightning arcs from creature to creature, frying 2 skeletons with bows and injuring 2 ghouls.

The stench of death is horrible and overpowering.
All save DC14 Fortitude or start throwing up - this means a -2 penalty to attacks, saves and skill checks for 2 rounds.

Most of the creatures are either too clumsy or too ineffectual to do much damage to a polished fighting unit. Clangden is able to effectively block attacks to Nonam and Tericus. However -
there are creatures closing in on some of the others. Two morghs approach Jus and Addinein. It's obvious some kind of formation is needed to get through unscathed.

A flurry of arrows also descend on the party.

Possible hits depending on current AC:

Gareth - AC 35,30,35 for 4,4,4 dam
Nonam - AC 23 for 8
Clangden - AC 35 for 7
Jus - AC 26,28 34 for 4,4,3
Tericus - AC 25, 30 for 7,8
Addinein - AC 28,32 for 4,3

"Then me make our break!" then Tericus moves towards the mask, calling on Alemi's power again to destroy the undead around them(highest hd of undead turned is 16, turn a total of 23 h.d., 6 h.d. or less are destroyed instead of turned. just to let you know jan i can turn undead times a day, this is my 2nd use, my shield has missle deflection also)

and then Clangden starts throwing up all over everything.

Jus  d20+11=27 d20+19=25
Monday November 18th, 2002 8:26:48 PM

Jus is hit once by the vile creatures (3 hp). He backs away quickly, following Tericus and Clangden (and Clangden's path).

Jus doesn't attack the monsters, but spends his energy attempting to keep the creatures off Tericus. He does, however, keep careful monitor of where he steps. [25 concentration check].

Tuesday November 19th, 2002 11:12:39 AM

Once again, Tericus's blessed power of Alemi rips into the throng of clammering and clawing undead. 14 skeletons explode in multiple shards of bone, 4 ghouls drop to the ground in a mass of ooze. It enables the party to move forward quite a bit.
Similar scenes of destruction can be seen at the rear of the group as as Torel lets loose the wrath of Gargul.

The gloom ahead is lit by Nonam's lightning bolt which shoots forth and lights up some monstrous form that stands to its full height and howls in anger at being partially fried. This cry is joined by another high pitched shriek of some other creature that seems to be embedded in the big monster's chest. This huge half-skeletal, half-flesh thing is not alone. It has an identical brother right behind it. They loom in front of Nonam and Clangden with burning hate in their eyes.

Flanking Tericus, Jus and Addinein are similarly faced with something nasty. For fast moving skeletal forms approach, undeterred by Tericus and Torel. They have tongues like worms and look hideous.

This is my interpretation of your battle formation:

Clangden and Nonam are at the front.
Tericus is in the centre, flanked and protected by Jus and Addinein.
The rear is defended by Gareth and Torel.

The creatures attempt to get some payback.

Nonam gets swiped at by big uggy #1, twice.
It misses him - twice.

The second creature's little shrieker embedded in its chest attempts to cast CONFUSION on Clangden(Will DC 17 negates). The effect in this particular instance, is to make the dwarf attack the nearest creature to him -which happens to be the one trying to rip Nonam's head off.

Jus and Addinein face the quick-on-their-feet skeletons who lash out with their fists and those horrible tongues.
They miss - barely in some instances.

(I got such lame rolls!!!)

The peacock mask lies at everyone's feet, and it can be seen that if the two big monsters can be killed, there's a clear path at the front.

Then maneuvering about so that his spell can hit both the half skeleton-half flesh giant things while avoiding Clangden (which shouldn't be hard since the dwarf is shorter), Nonam casts prismatic spray. If any other nasties are about that he can hit without threatening the dwarf, he'll get them too.

Wednesday November 20th, 2002 11:30:46 PM

Battle continues.

At the rear, Torel manages to cut down 4 ghouls. Gareth does even better, cutting down an approaching morgh and 5 skeletons. The rear seems very well protected.

Jus casts Bulls Strength on Addinein - who is on his opposite flank, with Tericus well guarded in the middle.
The cleric sends out a blast of flame toward the first huge devourer (the other is hidden behind the first and therefore sheilded). Both it - and the tortured creature in its chest shriek in pain. It drops - cooked.
(Save failed)

Clangden moves to attack the second devourer, chopping away at the beast like he has a purpose. More shrieks are heard. The dwarf is also aware of Tericus's flame right behind him as hot dry air assaults his nostrils.

Then, Nonam's prismatic sphere spell goes off....

In order to miss Clangden, he's had to fire over the dwarf's head at the creature which means some of the spheres which might have hit other monsters, miss.
However - the result is a rather spectacular fry, sizzle and fry attack which - in addition to Clangden's axe bites - send the monster into a state of extreme deadness. It falls in a smouldering heap.

This leaves the morghs at the flanks to deal with, but their blows seem to have little relevence.

The path is now clear ahead to make a break for it. Behind the group are more skeletons, ghouls, morghs and bigger, shadowy creatures - all shambling your way - but they're slow.

"Lets move!" yells Torel, " and draw the horde away from this area. Then someone needs to come back and check for signs of the Overlord!"

Tericus
Thursday November 21st, 2002 9:00:27 AM

"Follow me!!" Tericus yells as he makes a break for the gap, running as fast as he can

Jus
Thursday November 21st, 2002 6:56:00 PM

Jus follows Tericus once again. Jus happily considers that it's pretty cool to see Tericus so outgoing -- a change from what Jus remembers the last time they were together.

"Be careful of the blood," Jus calls in warning as Tericus darts out.

Glancing around as he makes his way, Jus comments, "This is a really cool place! It's dark, foreboding, and somewhat terrifying; but one could get use to that."

Gareth
Friday November 22nd, 2002 12:49:10 AM

The warrior decides to take to the air. He attempts to get a better vantage point to spot the Overlord. I mean hey, not only is she powerful, she's beautiful too! :)

Clangden
Friday November 22nd, 2002 12:46:12 PM

stooping just enough to grab the peacock mask, Clangden makes a run for it, trying as hard as he can to keep up with the rest of the pack.

DM Jan
Friday November 22nd, 2002 8:54:34 PM

With Tericus at the fore, the group sets off away from the shambling mass of undead. Torel fends off any nasties that make a bid to follow.

"With a bit of luck, they'll start to disperse once they don't have our scent under their nostrils," growls the undead hunter, "and much as I'd like to stay and finish off every one of these abominations, thats not why we're here is it."

After a mad dash that puts about 100 yards between the group and the horde, Torel brings everyone to a halt.
"Before we go any further, is anyone suffering yet from the call of Woldsblood. It might seem nothing, but it can wear a man down eventually. Speak now - and the rest of us can watch out for you. There is no shame in this."

He waits till Gareth returns before saying anything else, and then -

"Woldsblood is pure magic. There are people in the Wold who can perform miracles with it, but it is also what carries the souls of the dead to their final resting place. That is it's purpose here in the Shadowlands. Do you hear it in your minds? It wants your soul. Touch it, and it will take you. Only Gargul himself will know your fate after that, so be warned."

Up in the air, Gareth has a better view of the landscape - black and red - the ground cut by glowing red streams and rivers, all flowing ahead eventually meeting wider red rivers. Occasionally there looks to be a bridge here and there, but apart from that, its barren.
At one point, something bright - like a small star whistles past over his head in the opposite direction to the river flow. As it zips past at high speed he is hit with a moment of pure joy that fades almost immediately.
Below him is the horde, bellowing with disappointment at not being able to reach him. Ahead is the party, safe for now.
A little ahead, off to his right on the ground are two shoes - about 20 feet apart, as though someone kicked them off.

Clangden's examination of the mask tells him that although its been stomped on a number of times, there's no blood, or hair - signs that its wearer had met a sticky end.

"By the way," adds Torel with a smirk. " Who would hate you people so much to let you walk into that little reception committee, eh?" he stabs a finger at the distant horde. "I haven't seen such a concentration of undead before in this place. If that wasn't a trap then may Gargul strike out my left eye."

Gareth (Invisible)
Friday November 22nd, 2002 10:07:50 PM

The warrior speaks into his dragon ring. "I see 2 shoes. She is leaving us a trail. Follow me!". He immediately flies in the direction of the shoes with his swords brandished like the fighter he is. He once there he looks around for the most reasonable escape route. He decides to not waste any time trying to examine the shoes - assuming they belong to the Overlord. "I'm going invisible guys. I don't want them to see me up here.". The warrior uses his ring to go dark and continues to search.

Tericus
Saturday November 23rd, 2002 2:32:22 PM

"Im not hearing any voices, so I must be ok." Tericus says. then he tells the undead hunter "We fought and banished a liche and his vampire companions not too long ago. It could very well be him. Moralas was his name, I think."

Jus  d20=14
Sunday November 24th, 2002 11:40:05 PM

"I'm," Jus begins, "that is, me, Jus, am kinda... well... not really voices, but there is a pull... and some whispers."

Jus drops the subject quickly, intending to find something better to talk about. Looking around, he drops that decision and moves onward. "Who would take the overlord to this place? Another Undead Hunter? I still have some discomfort about that guard of hers."

Looking around, with glances to the streams, Jus decides to cast Shield [Rolled against wisdom in casting it now].

Clangden
Monday November 25th, 2002 9:44:33 AM

after catching up with the group and dropping to one knee, Clangden doubles over and unleashes yet another pile of refuse from his stomach.

assuming the healer tends to this malady, Clangden resumes his posture, and begins following Gareth.

DM Jan
Monday November 25th, 2002 1:37:35 PM

Gareth's image winks out, leaving the undead below a little confused. They begin to shuffle toward the other party instead, although for now they're still a distance away.

(I'm presuming someone relayed Gareth's message to the NPC)

In order to get to where the warrior was, before he went invisible, everyone has to step or jump over a few 2ft wide streams of Woldsblood. It's not much of a problem for Tericus, Addinein and Clangden - but for Nonam and Jus, for the instant they're right above the stream, those whispers almost become screams of urgency.

Torel speaks to Tericus in a low voice.
"Your faith in Alemi will keep you strong against the pull of the Blood, but keep your eye on those two," he says pointing to Nonam and Jus. "Especially him," his eyes flick toward Jus. "I see struggle in his eyes."

Clangden clears his stomach once more. Away from the gaggle of ghouls and their equally horrendous bretheren, he finds he is able to breathe easier, and his stomach stops doing the loop di loop.
Torel reaches down, offering his water skin.

"A lich called Moralas, you say?" asks the undead hunter, rapidly changing the subject. "Sounds like someone who definitely needs to answer the call and be at the final mercy of Gargul. I've never understood those creatures. Who would want to choose to live in that state?" He pauses and looks around. "Now how in a blue devil's belly are we supposed to follow someone we can't see? Someone tell that boy not to fly too high," he adds, as another bright spark of light shoots overhead. "Tell him to follow the flow, for thats the way we're going."

Looking in the direction of 'the flow' - the landscape seems to stretch on and on, but there doesn't appear to be any other option than to explore the territory right now.

But there are questions -

If the party was ambushed, who was responsible?
Were they after the Overlord? Or the Storm Dragons? Both?
The Overlords aide - currently unconscious back in the anteroom, was there more to him than met the eye? Or was he just a Floating City noble out to make a name for himself?
What could have happened to the Overlord herself? Was she still alive? Was she alone? Was she captured?
Questions, questions and there were probably a million more.....

Certainly enough to evaluate and discuss on the trek ahead.

Clangden
Monday November 25th, 2002 4:24:35 PM

accepting the offered waterskin, Clangden drinks heavily, spitting out the first few mouthfuls to get the yuk out of his mouth.

Thank you Torel for the water.
*hands him back his waterskin*

Listening to Torel, Clangden starts waving for Gareth to come back to the group.

Someone ask Gareth to please return to the group so's that we could discuss a plan before we all go off half cocked. don't know about the rest of ya, I don't want to be in the middle of discussing things when we get clobbered again. sides, this might be a good time for us to cast any spells on each other that might assist us in the coming troubles.

Tericus, don't you have spells that can aid you in figuring out where we go from here, some kind of diving or scrying spell? wouldn't that help us to locate the Overlord faster??

Nonam
Monday November 25th, 2002 6:25:29 PM

Nonam drifts along with the rest of the group. Looking at Torel once he asks, "What was that you said? I'm trying to hear what they are saying. It's hard listening to both."

Jus
Monday November 25th, 2002 8:32:49 PM

Jus looks at Nonam, then glances nervously towards Torel. Jus is relieved that Nonam may have heard the same voices, but it scares him at the same time. Following along, Jus manages to keep his thoughts to himself.

Gareth (Invisible)
Monday November 25th, 2002 10:16:25 PM

Totally focused on the shoe trail, the warrior continues to follow the path left by who he presumes to be the overlord. He speaks again into the ring "I see a pair of shoes clearly kicked off. I expect she is being carried." (He would now have traveled 2 rounds at full speed flying as previously specified).

Addinein
Tuesday November 26th, 2002 2:42:35 AM

Taking the cue from Torel, Addinein decides to bring up the rear of the group, so he can keep an eye out on the two members of the group that need watching. Addressing his question to Torel, "Do you have any idea as to who may have opened this 'portal', or what we might expect"

Tericus
Tuesday November 26th, 2002 9:38:57 AM

"Keep moving," Tericus says. "We don't want to be slowed down by the undead."

Running in front of the party, Tericus contacts Gareth, relaying Clangden's request.

DM Jan
Tuesday November 26th, 2002 2:19:59 PM

"Its funny you should ask that," says Torel to Addinein. "A priest of Gargul would never have left a portal open like that - not to the Shadowlands. It's far too dangerous. I have heard spells can be bought. To be honest I thought it was just a rumour, until now. It smells like the work of a twisted wizard if you ask me. Eyes of Gargul only visit this place in order to right a wrong, and as you can see - there are many wrongs wandering about here."
He chuckles grimly.

"Shut them out! Don't listen." he commands Nonam sternly. "Unless you want to die."

Tericus contacts Gareth at Clangden's request and herds everybody onward. Its perhaps just as well, for even Torel seems slightly distracted, occasionally looking back to the distant shuffling undead with a look of pure hatred in his eyes.

A sense of purpose and concentration is strongest in Tericus, Clangden, Addinein and Gareth. Nonam and Jus will have a fight on their hands. Whisper whisper whisper.....

Up in the air, although Gareth's mind is reasonably safe from the Woldsblood, he isn't exactly in the clear.

They want you to go back down, and anyway I didn't think she was 'that' beautiful. I've seen better, and what do YOU want with power? It'll go to your head. It and she will be the ruin of you. Hmph.

- carps Max, with an obvious hint of jealousy.

The group moves on. And on.
Clangden's apprehensions are luckily unfounded. The path before them seems relatively quiet. Occasionally, a single ghoul staggers near every now and then, but apart from that, the journey is fairly uneventful. The pathways between the streams do not leave many choices to deviate.

It's now 8 hours since the Storms Dragons entered the Shadowlands.
Tired?

Gareth
Tuesday November 26th, 2002 9:20:35 PM

Terribly perplexed that he has seen absolutely nothing (er - if he's flown full speed in the air following the blood flow for 8 hours surely he would have overtaken them by now...). The warrior flies back to the group. "I flew a long way guys. No sign other than those shoes - which I presume were hers. Any luck here?". He waits with the others to decide what to do. "I imagine if they can go without rest so can we. I have no idea where to go next. Ideas?".

(~~ Jan ~~ David, its a wide area, and you never specified if you crossed any streams or rivers, or went as the crow flies, how high, how low etc etc. Imagine a large delta - lots of streams, lots of rivers. Perceptions are different here, too. I suppose it's only right that Gareth should be a little perplexed. This place is far from the norm, and he wasn't exactly safe up there, with all those sparks flying around.)

Addinein
Wednesday November 27th, 2002 12:45:06 AM

Thinking back to earlier episodes Addinein comments, "This wouldn't be the work of the twisted individual that caused the attack on the underlord was it?" Addinein looks to the other members to see what their reactions are.

Clangden

pushing forward, but getting a bit tired, due to the fact it was evening when the group entered the area.

you know, Torel, is there a place here where it is somewhat safe to stop for a bit? if i'm getting tired I know the rest of you are starting to feel the time too.

starts looking for a somewhat safe, and defensable place to stop and rest.

Nonam  d20+22=33
Thursday November 28th, 2002 7:58:45 AM

Nonam makes a few attempts at idle chatter over the 8 hours in an effort to block out the voices. Not finding enough interest in conversation, at least not enough on a high enough level to keep his mind occupied, the wizard tries to remember details of all his spells and keeps reciting them over in his mind. All in an effort to block out the voices.

(concentration=31)

Tericus
Thursday November 28th, 2002 10:42:33 AM

Tericus agrees with Clangden. "Unless Torel has a better idea, let's look for a wide clearing between streams." With a glance towards Nonam and Jus, Tericus continues. "We should double up on the watches. Nonam and Jus can sleep. Torel and I can take turns watching through the night. The rest of you can trade off as you see fit."

Jus  d20=9
Thursday November 28th, 2002 10:46:17 AM

Jus listens distantly to Tericus, not really paying attention. With his Shield spell long gone, Jus wonders if he should cast something else. Perhaps Stoneskin, or Magic Circle Against Evil.

He manages to decide to wait [wis roll], feeling a little more comfortable -- for the moment.

DM Jan
Thursday November 28th, 2002 1:07:39 PM

Gareth returns to the group after a frantic search, regretfully with no sightings of the Overlord or any clue that might tell them where she is.

The others need some time to rest and replenish spells. Nonam looks extremely preoccupied, and Jus also appears to have some kind of internal struggle on his hands.

Clangden and Tericus find what looks like a reasonable spot - a wider part of a broad path on which to rest a while, and at this particular point there are no branches off elsewhere, meaning that only the front and rear needs to be watched.

'Who DID kill the Underlord?' asks Torel while setting up camp, curious after Addinein brought up the subject.

At one point, the grim looking undead hunter takes Gareth to one side, easily tall enough to look him in the eye.
'So where were you?' he asks, sternly - his tone making the warrior feel like he's twelve years old. 'Up there? Do you see that?'
He points upward as another spark of light hurtles past at great speed in the air above.
'That's life, lad - on its way to be reborn. Imagine crashing into one of those and killing it? Can you imagine what Gargul would have to say about that? Hmmm? You listen to me, and watch yourself here. This place carries reverent life as well as the scum we're cutting down.'

The man then laughs unpleasantly. 'Mind you, I've never seen the wrath of Gargul up close. Might be a fine thing to watch, eh? So long as your not on the recieving end.'

During the watches, there's plenty of opportunity to defend the camp from the occasional tottering ghoul and gangly skeleton. Whoever shares the watch with Torel will see that this man loves his work, cutting down undead with extreme relish with a nasty grin on his face. Of course its obvious in the way he spoke to Gareth, and to Clangden who barred his way back at the palace - this guy never went to Charm School.

At one point the man wanders further up the trail a little while. He looks to be checking the ground, like a ranger would in the forest.

After about seven hours, its obviously time to move on, for there's a distant body of undead approaching, not as many as before, but they're obviously whats left of the group following the party.

Nonam and Jus have had a bad time of it. Although managing to retain their spell focus, the constant whispering and lure of Woldsblood has taken its toll.

(Nonam -1 Wisdom)
(Jus -2 Wisdom)

Torel says -
'I caught a whiff of something strong further up the trail. Something powerful has passed this way, but I think we're going to need help. There's a temple of Gargul nearby, so as we move on - look for a break in the landscape. Someone there might know something.'

Shadowlands time - 15 hours and counting.....

He continues to wear the tiger mask, evidentally having forgotten about it.

"Gareth? Did you see any signs of a temple during your flight?", Tericus asks.

When he notices Clangden, Tericus approaches the dwarf and asks him if he is having trouble resisting the voices. Tericus then takes a closer look, wondering if the undead had a greater affect on Clangden then they realized [spot roll of 27].

Satisfied that all is well for now, Tericus readies himself to leave. "Everyone ready? We'd better get moving soon."

"Clangden, after you," Tericus adds, gesturing towards the distant horizon.

Saturday November 30th, 2002 9:23:51 AM

Concern flashes across his face as he sees his other companions struggling with the voices in this place. After Torel mentions it Addinein speaks up, "I think stopping at the temple would definitely be a benefit to us."

DM Jan
Monday December 2nd, 2002 1:14:47 AM

The group set off once more.

Torel accedes point to Clangden and stays to the rear of the group, his stony eyes shifting toward Jus once in a while. Nonam's face he cannot see and therefore cannot judge how he is doing.

To Tericus, apart from the hair colour change, Clangden seems fine. So do Gareth and Addinein, in terms of being focussed and being their 'usual' self.

The whispers in Jus's and Nonam's heads become more insistant. It seems the only thing that will satisfy them would be to walk to the edge of the path and jump into the stream of Woldsblood, flowing like lava not too far away. Somewhere deep inside is a survival instinct, also yelling at them to stop.

The path splits off, and splits off again, over a jagged bridge of what looks like black rock, and then continues.

Then, a little later, Torel calls ahead, ordering Clangden to stop. There is another fork and a bridge. In the distance to the left, the land seems a little distorted, and there's a blue glow in the midst of it.

"A temple!" announces the undead hunter, followed by a curse. "But to the right is the trail of something which might also give us answers. It's something strong... undead, perhaps a lich or worse. It's trail was too close to where we entered to be a coincidence I think. It seems we have a choice to make."

Clangden
Monday December 2nd, 2002 10:43:09 AM

i don't think there is a choice, we must first seek the knowledge and help of Gargul before we continue. my opinion only of course. why don't we go to the temple first, then come back and take the other trail?

Nonam
Monday December 2nd, 2002 4:38:29 PM

When the group stops to ponder the choice of path, Nonam wanders over to one of the streams of Woldsblood and stares at it.

Gareth
Monday December 2nd, 2002 8:32:15 PM

The warrior takes the rebuke of the hunter without comment. He looks to his comrades as some seem to be struggling. "With the state of our casters I'd say maybe we could get some help for them at the temple. I'd hate to encounter whatever it was without them. I would say we should defer to the hunter in this. What do you think we should do?", he asks.

Tericus
Monday December 2nd, 2002 10:17:35 PM

Tericus moves over to Nonam and gently guides him back to the path. "The temple seems to be the logical choice.

Addinein
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 12:20:31 AM

Responding to Terol's question Addinein states, "We should be one healthy group, not something that is splintered. Assuming the temple is probably the place to do that, I'm thinking we want to go to the temple."

Jus  d20=10
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 8:54:49 AM

Jus furrows his brow as the others talk. Then he realizes everyone must be talking about Nonam.

Nodding his had with sadness and pity, Jus agrees with the others, "We'd better hurry, it looks like he may be having trouble resisting."

Anyone looking too close sees Jus staring past Nonam at the stream nearby. Jus' eyes are twitchy, as he fights whatever pulls at him inside.

Nonam
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 10:39:21 AM

Responding to Tericus Nonam turns and looks at him through his now ever present tiger mask, "The temple sounds ok." There isn't much feeling in the response.

DM Jan
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 11:03:32 AM

Up so close to the flowing stream of Woldsblood, Nonam realises something. What he is currently staring at is pure, raw, concentrated magic. It radiates unbelievable power, more than he could ever imagine. It's mind blowing. It's perhaps one of THE major sources of magic in the Wold. Perhaps the only source. Imagine if it could be captured and harnessed, even a little...

Tericus pulls him away from it.

Gareth's question is answered almost unanimously, and so the gnarled undead hunter nods, and points out the path to Clangden.

"Take the second bridge on the left there - the first one looks like it leads to a dead end."

Addinein, Gareth and Tericus can see that both Nonam and Jus are acting VERY odd. It's in Jus's eyes and Nonam's behaviour.

The journey takes about an hour. There are a lot of tributaries to cross and the occasional undead to swat out of the way.

Eventually the group approaches part of the landscape that seems a little hazy. There's a mist, and shapes within it, as though there are two scenes to be looked upon, two planes blended together. There's a shape of a pillar or two, a marble floor, and in contrast - glowing blue - an almost solid shape of an altar.

Suddenly, a disembodied voice rings out.

"Hold! Stay where you are! Who in Garguls Eye are you people?"

Both Addinein and Gareth feel a little coldness pass them momentarily.

Clangden
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 11:24:30 AM

speaking out he replies: We are servants to the God's of Wold, it is us, the representatives to the Floating City in search of answers to the disappearance of a friend. Our new comrade, Torel, a servant to Gargul has brought us here. May we come in to the safety of your temple and speak with you?

stays on alert.

Gareth
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 9:36:34 PM

The warrior looks again to the cleric of Gargul to respond. "Looks like we'll see how Gargul feels about you...". He keeps a close eye on Jus and Nonam to make sure they don't do anything stupid. He lines himself up so he could tackle or knock them out instantly if they try to go for a dive.

Jus  d20=19

Addinein

keeping quiet for the moment, Tericus continues to keep a close eye on Nonam, and after Jus's comment, he starts to look after Jus too

Nonam
Wednesday December 4th, 2002 10:23:28 AM

Nonam uses detect magic to look at a rivulet of Woldsblood. The stuff is interesting, and if he could capture some in a vial. Telekinesis should do the trick. That way he wouldn't have to touch the stuff. Perhaps he could study it that way. Certainly not here, but surely a small amount would be safe for study back in Floating City. Everyone else is acting weird about the stuff though. Certainly it's dangerous, but so are a lot of other things. He'd have to make sure they wouldn't interrupt.

As Nonam starts thinking about his plan to capture some Woldsblood, he seems a little more like his old calculating self. He even takes the mask off and puts it away. "Um, why didn't anyone mention that I still had this on?" The straps have left little pressure lines on Nonam's face.

DM Jan
Wednesday December 4th, 2002 12:38:57 PM

Clangden's announcement and request rings out, and for an awkward moment all is silent.
Gareth's comment brings a raised eyebrow, followed by a ruined, humorous grin from Torel as they wait for something to happen.

Suddenly, a shadow on the ground seems to take on more solidity, and at once there is a woman stood there, directly in front of Clangden, dressed in dour grey robes and wearing an open eye symbol similar to that of Torel's. Her hair is shaved back, almost to the crown of her head, the remainder tied back in a severe pony tail. She looks at the group with cold, impassive eyes; trails of mist curl at the base of her gown. She radiates cold. The overall effect is VERY creepy.

The undead hunter steps forward and identifies himself, and a heated conversation passes back and forth between the two. The main bone of contention appears to be the fact that the Storm Dragons are where they should not be.
However, there is another...

Torel turns to the group.

"This is Norella. She is a Grim, an Eye of Gargul, and currently stands guard at the Temple here because - Norella, perhaps you should explain."

The female human sweeps her cold eyes over the group.

"Something has happened. An anomaly. Only a mile away from the Temple, we discovered an open portal to the Shadowlands. We don't know how it got there, but we closed it as soon as it was discovered. Someone or something has entered here. Whoever it was, they must have gone deeper, for I was unable to detect them nearby. I thought it might be you..." she paused.
"But apparently not. Torel tells me the female you seek matters enough to rescue. I have my doubts, but I will trust my fellow Eye of Gargul's judgement in this."

Her eyes bore into Clangden.
"If you leave here and enter the Temple, there is no guarantee that you will arrive in the same place when you return here. If it is a trail you follow, then I would advise you to remain for now, but not for long. This place is - "

Norella raises her arm and points, almost accusingly toward Jus and Nonam.

"Bring those two to me, before they are lost!"

Torel looks expectantly at Gareth, Tericus, Clangden and Addinein to help out if any of the spellcasters resist.

Thursday December 5th, 2002 9:58:54 AM

Jus grabs his swords when the priest speaks about he and Nonam. He doesn't draw, and doesn't have time to, before Clangden and the others start pushing them towards her.

"Look around you, friends. Does this really look like the place to get help?" Jus asks in a firm voice. Still he doesn't fight too much, realizing something may indeed be wrong.

Nonam
Thursday December 5th, 2002 10:48:10 AM

Figuring he can capture a vial of woldsblood later when it won't be as much trouble, Nonam walks over.

He takes out a potion of intelligence on his way over and drinks it, "I've been thinking that this potion might help. It will hone the intellect and make it easier for me to concentrate. Anything else you can do would be appreciated." The wizard puts the empty vial away in his pocket.

DM Jan
Thursday December 5th, 2002 1:29:42 PM

Pushed and/or encouraged by the others, Jus and Nonam find themselves stood directly before the female priest.
Some of Jus's fears seem justified as she reaches out and touchs them both on the shoulder. There is a feeling as cold as ice, emptiness and dread, followed by such a burst of clarity and freedom, it is startling - as though their spirits have been let out of a locked box. During that time, the whispers become silent.

Norella then steps back.
"That's the best I can do," she says firmly. "I cannot offer anything else other than advice, and that would be to leave this place as soon as possible."

Both Jus and Nonam retrieve 1 Wisdom point.
They both also get the opportunity to re-roll their Wisdom score.

The tall, chewed up-looking undead hunter thanks his fellow Eye of Gargul.
"Well," he says to the others, "lets get back to that trail and hope it leads us to what we came for. Come on - we haven't got all day," and with that - Mr Charming sets off.

The Grim winks out of sight once more, leaving only her shadow behind.

Away from the temple, the landscape takes on its normal gloom, with the ground split up into black and red.

As for that other portal the Grim was talking about earlier - what was that all about?

About an hour further up the original trail, the scenery hasn't changed, except for one thing. There's a dead ghoul lying on the path.

Gareth feels a sudden agitation, coming from Max - like he's gearing up for something.

Clangden, Tericus and Jus move further up the trail toward the laughter.

Gareth winks out of sight and wisely gets out of Nonam's blasting range, ready to take to the air, while Addenin and Torel stay closer to the wizard on the ground.

Then - in a matter of seconds, maybe less - all heck breaks loose.

Nonam's spell goes off in spectacular fashion, and for just an instant, there's a rather nifty glass, winged, fiendish creature suspended in the air - right before it comes hurtling down. It's impact with the ground sounds like a bomb, and it breaks into what looks like a million deadly glass shards that go hurtling outward, embedding into armour, cutting into flesh.

Nonam, Addinein, Gareth and Torel are in range, and must save REFLEX DC27 or take bloody cuts to exposed flesh and 29 DAM.

At the same time - something big, ugly and winged, a bit like its brother in the air, winks into sight on the ground right in front of Clangden, who's advanced in front of Tericus and Jus. The thing is on it's backswing, right before bringing down a mighty blow toward the dwarf.

Hits AC 35 for 25 Dam (Did I hit or just miss?)

Further ahead, there's a surprised and angry curse as the glass monster disintegrates. The shape of a man appears about 70 ft away, and arrows come hurtling from that direction, straight at Jus and Tericus.

Smiling to confront a fellow archer, Jus activates his Boots of Speed in preparation for his next attack. He launches a volley of his returning arrows at the nemesis. Unfortunately, Jus' time away from his bow shows in the poor quality of his first few shots [A:26/19/28 D:3/5/11].

Addinein (AC 22) (-29 hps)  d20+9=25
Wednesday December 11th, 2002 12:03:37 AM

Grunting in surprise as Addinein gets caught with the shattered glass flying into his face. Addinein decides to hold his action for one more round, as he starts to see events unfold around him. He wants to see if there are any other surprises while there is still one grouping of four people around.

The flying glass also catches Torel who gives Nonam a look that suggests it wasn't particularly appreciated.

"Try and take that archer alive!" he barks angrily. "I'd like to know what the heck all this is about!"

Flames in various forms fly from Tericus and Nonam, and shoot toward the distant archer. In the gloom its difficult to tell whether the fire has fried him or not. This is followed by a volley of arrows from Jus, which seem to go sailing past their target.

Addinein's better than average vision tell him that for now - the big ugly trying to chop Clangden's head off, and the archer up ahead, seem to be the only remaining combatants.

Gareth flies up into a position ready to engage the winged creature, in time to see one of Clangden's blows bite deep. Max is itching to get started.
The beast grins, as though it enjoys the pain.

The creature swings back at Clangden. It's axe looks mean, swishing down, matching the dwarf in a dance to the death.

Hits Clangden twice AC 36, 45 for 25, 21 DAM

Meanwhile - Mr Mystery continues to fire resolutely. Again Tericus and Jus are the targets.

Hits Tericus AC 32, 39 for 6, 10 DAM
Hits Jus AC 32 for 7 DAM

"Im not sure he'll let us take him alive!" Tericus yells. but he activates his shield to float and protect(fire resistance and missle deflection) and then begins to move towards the archer

Nonam shrugs his shoulders at Torel's suggestion and casts Hold Monster on Mr. Mystery. He also mutters out a little apology, "sorry about the glass."

Inwardly, Nonam isn't sorry and is instead thinking that the glass was probably better than whatever spells the thing could have cast.

[% to cast in armor, will dc22 to negate, Nonam beats SR34]

With silent intensity the warrior strikes. Using a new and more developed fighting technique - for those who watch him - he cuts into the creature 6 times with solid accuracy (Hit AC 43,36,28,22,33,24 for 20+16+16+25+7+7=91 DMG). "Let's see if you enjoy meeting Max...". Now fully visible, Gareth springs away from the creature before it has a chance to launch an assault (spring attack feat). He waits for the response.

Jus considers Torel's words, but decides the foe is probably strong enough to take a few attacks (failed WI roll miserably).

With the fired arrows returned to the quiver, Jus activates his Glove and takes aim again.

Yes! Jus can feel his aim improve -- if he doesn't hit this time, he'd better switch tactics.

Protected by his shield, Tericus moves closer to the bowman. Now he can see that this is indeed a man, dressed in dark clothes that help him blend in with his surroundings.

The man is busy re-nocking arrows and preparing to fire once more, when all of a sudden, he seems to freeze. This is immediately before a set of arrows arrive, do their work, then shoot back to their owner. Their *thud-thud-thud-thud* impact cause the bowman to move slightly, but apart from that - nothing.

Tericus does not appear to be under any immediate threat.

Back a little ways, Jus discovers something dark and slick coating three of his returned arrows. The scent of it causes the voices in his head to sing, loud and hypnotic.

Meanwhile, the winged beast lets out a terrible howl as Clangden gets three nasty blows in, and if thats not bad enough, it finds itself attacked from above by Gareth - his sword Max carving away efficiently and getting in two slices through the thick flesh.

Again... yes!

As Gareth leaps away from the monster's line of vision - it has no option but to keep hacking away at Clangden, which it does with an angry rage, slamming its axe into the dwarf again and again.

Hits AC 47, 42, 33 for 17, 25, 21 DAM

All around, the gloom and the rivers of blood seem content to sit there and watch the fight, patiently waiting for new customers to ferry on to the Lands of Rest.
The blood call continues relentless.

It is now 20 hours since the party entered the Shadowlands.
Nonam finds his concentration back to where it was before the Grim pushed him back toward sanity a little, dropping another Wisdom point.
Jus feels the same. Perhaps he is starting to be able to slow the descent into madness, but the downward spiral continues nevertheless.

Addinein
Thursday December 12th, 2002 2:44:00 AM

Feeling that the situation is not dire enough for Addinein to engage the enemy. Addinein tries to help out those that deal damage better than him. Putting himself at full defensive mode with a dodge ready for the flying beastie (now AC 27) Addinein casts shield on Clangden. (+7AC to 180 degrees controlled by character)

(sorry for lateness of post. SHould have made this before Jan's latest post)

((~~Jan~~ Tod I'll accept that. Tim, that means one of the monster's blows didn't connect.))

Tericus
Thursday December 12th, 2002 8:46:27 AM

with his shield protecing him, Tericus continues to move towards the bowman, though he pauses for a moment and yells at the man "STOP!!"(casts command on the bowman, will save of 15 to negate)
