Good Behavior [DM Jerry] Monday November 18th, 2002 7:42:39 PM
The party takes a few days off to relax and bask in the glow of their recent successes. The town is gearing up for Mask Day (see the legend on the site about this to learn more) and so is the party.
One evening near dusk as the party wanders the streets, looking for the right mask and also for a bit of work, an alabaster Carriage drawn by two alabaster horses slowly moves down the street in front of the orphanage and our heros' apartment across the street.
The driver is wearing a white mask. Even the horses wear matching masks.
A cultured female voice from within says,
"Halt! There!"
The carriage stops. Two bodyguards leap out looking this way and that.
The voice from within sounding with the rich accent of the top levels says,
"There! Them! They will do wonderously. Bring them to me."
The bodyguard's visage softens as he spots the party.
He speaks. His voice is raspy as if laid bare under the sun for too long.
"Honored ladies and gentlemen. Milady would have a few words with you. I give you my sword as sign of good behavior. Please. Come. This way."
He bows, smiling a mysterious smile that twitches as if he's not used to this type of request from his lady and opens wide the door of the carriage.
The inside looks to be larger than expected. Even Drew might fit within.
Barick Monday November 18th, 2002 10:21:08 PM
Barick looks suspicously at the carriage. He studies the bodyguard as he speaks but when offered a chance to enter the splendid carriage he grins widely. "Well I'm glad I had a chance to bathe and have my clothes laundered the other day," he says remembering his involuntary swim while returning from the jungle, "I wouldn't want to sully such a gorgeous vehicle." He hops inside gazing around, his grin only widening.
Tionel Tuesday November 19th, 2002 1:23:32 AM
Not wholly unused to being selected in such a way, though usually it happens while giving a performance, Tionel pays no attention to the bodyguard (who is only doing his job). Not even having seen the woman, he pipes up in a courteous, cultured voice, (one that addresses the nobility in quite as much respect as need be, though not as much as a commoner should use), "An opportunity, milady? We would be delighted to assist, if we can..." With that said, he sweeps his hat off, so as not to be disrespectful, and hops into the carriage with the grace of a juggler. "Ah, watch your head, Drew." He offers a hand to the next person to assist them, if they need it, in the meantime turning his piercing dark eyes to try to find the mysterious noblewoman.
Gordo Tuesday November 19th, 2002 6:08:56 AM
"You need a favour? Well then, it would be churlish to refuse!" grins the big man, and clambers inside the carriage. He has no experience of high society, and no time for courtly protocols. He sits himself down, beaming widely, and says "And how may we help you, lass?"
Drew Tuesday November 19th, 2002 11:29:31 AM
Drew looks into the carrage wide eyed. "By Domi this is not normal!" Then seeing that his family and friends are climbing in no questions asked waits till the last of his mates are in and climbs up after them, grumbling to himself the whole time. "come on is the web is fine, why not jump in my pool of hot lava, heres my dragon pet dont worry he dosent bite . . .much."
Syr Tuesday November 19th, 2002 1:17:13 PM
The smallest member of the group slides in easily and finds a spot to sit near the side of the carriage. Unused to dealing with the upper classes he remains silent and fidgets nervously.
Here, I'm blushing! [DM Jerry] Tuesday November 19th, 2002 6:45:26 PM
As Barick enters the carriage, he sees that the inside is as opulent as the outside. Covered in gold trim, the alabaster seats are comfort to sit in beyond measure.
Inside is an overweight lady with way too much makeup on. Her golden dress matches the inside of the wagon. She smiles at Barick as he enters and waves him to a seat beside her.
Tionel enters and the lady returns his gestures by offering her hand. She then offers him a seat on her other side.
"It's been a mighty long time since I was surrounded by such handsome young men. I am honored to meet you."
As Gordo steps on and calls her "lass" she blushes and says, "I think that I'm way to old to be called a lass. Here, I'm blushing! Have a seat."
With a smile she directs him to sit opposite to her.
As Drew enters the wagon, even it's stout suspension creaks causing the wagon to lean to one side. Once settled, the wagon settles itself. One of the horses whinnies in protest.
She smiles warmly at the Half-Orc with not a trace of falsehood. Deftly she comments, "My dragon is about 12 inches tall and is made of crystal. It sits upon my dresser and lights my fireplace at night. My pool of lava is a spa pool in back of my house. My web...I guess that would have to be the net that surrounds my poor hair. You are safe here sir. I doubt I could cause you harm, although the favor I wish to ask of you is possibly a bit dangerous."
Finally as Syr enters the wagon and sits next to Drew, she takes a breath and plunges right into ther business.
"I am Lady Firiona and I have lost my mask. I must find my mask in time for Mask Day tomorrow or I am sure to be picked. Both my seer and my gypsy fortune teller tell me so!"
Her distress is clear. She truly believes that htis mask is her salvation from being chosen to serve the Underlord for the next 20 years.
"I believe that young folk like you know the city much better than rich old fools like me. I will pay you whatever you think is fair for your time and efforts.
"The mask has the appearance of a guant man in much pain. Nothing as pitiful as the look of this mask could ever be chosen. Don't you agree?"
She pulls out a sketch she has made of the mask and it is true. The sketch shows a guant faced man with worry lines on the forehead and sunken cheeks. The skin appears to be leathery and worn by the sun.
"I had an artist friend make this sketch for me."
She hands it to Barick to begin passing around.
"So, make me an offer young ones. Will you help me find my mask? I am willing to denote to your needs very graciously."
The jewels on her neck and dress glimmer occasionally as she leans back after talking.
Turin Tuesday November 19th, 2002 7:12:14 PM
(OOC note: blarg I would've posted earlier but I didn't get the email until just a few minutes ago)
Turin comes in last, just in time to see the sketch. "You need help finding your mask... Where did you see it last?"
Barick Wednesday November 20th, 2002 12:13:46 AM
Barick takes the sketch from the lady. "Hmm, so grim for one of such radiance," he says giving her a sly look. He passes the picture around nodding at Turin's question, "Do you have any suspicions as to someone who may have stolen your mask? I suspect masks don't just get up and walk away on their own. Who did you commission your mask from? Did you get it recently or have you had it long?"
Gordo Wednesday November 20th, 2002 7:50:51 AM
The big man scratches his bushy red sideburns and puffs out his cheeks. "Hmm, OK, so your mask went missing. Well we can certainly try to help. Where was it before it vanished? Was there anyone with it? Could we talk to your servants, and perhaps this seer and gypsy guide? Can you think of anyone else who might have been able to get close to the mask? Can you think of anyone who would want to cause you harm? The more you can tell us about yourself, and those around you, the better chance we will have of finding it."
He winces, as if all this thinking is making his brain hurt. But he screws up his eyes in concentration, trying to think this through. "Did anyone else know about the prophesy made by your seer and fortune teller? Can you think of anyone else you told? I mean, this is a pretty ugly mask, lass. I can't see anyone stealing it unless they already knew how much you needed it, and wanted to cause you harm."
Drew Wednesday November 20th, 2002 9:35:58 AM
As Drew watches his family mentaly plunge off in search of the mask he clears his throat. "My lady. I will be the uncooth one and speak of the reward you are offering. Having not been raised in the social graces it bothers me not what you think of me personaly. If I offend I am sorry. My family may ask for something diffrent but this is what I ask. What I ask is this, There is an orphanage here in the Float on the lower levels. Mama Flauests. It is a place of hope, love, and caring. A place where the street children that are cast out can find a home. As such places are rare it is a full place and a poor one. It is in constant need of patrons. Loyal, constant patrons through the years. I would ask that you consider this place with your heart and soul as a place that could use yours and your friends patraonage through the future. My price is that you consider this. I do not ask that you take up the cause, just that you seriously consider it. If it is agreed then I will look for your mask."
Syr Wednesday November 20th, 2002 3:03:48 PM
Syr begins to feel slightly more at ease as the lady quickly responds to Drew's wit with a clever jest of her own.
Nodding as Tionel asks his question to discover the mask's whereabouts he remembers one Mother Flauest's favorite phrases, "You lost it, did you retrace all of your steps up until the last point that you had it?"
Grinning to himself he comes back to the conversation and Drew's question spark some suspicion, "You are obviously a person accustomed to getting what you want, is there any ... competition for the recovery of this mask? Either friends of yours or those that wish you ill?"
Finally, the elf coughs delicately, "Ma'am, please don't take this the wrong way but we were unfortunately involved in a incident a while back when the self-proclaimed owner of a piece property was not the true owner. Pardon me for asking but I don't like being caught in the middle of things over my head. If you hadn't noticed, I don't stand much taller than his waist." Syr smiles innocently and points to Gordo. "Forgive me for asking but... how do we know you own the mask?"
Tionel Wednesday November 20th, 2002 4:00:16 PM
"Why, Syr! Do you think that this fine lady would steal someone else's mask? Why, it's practically a holy day in this city, and the masks the relics that constitute it! I already have my mask, and I can't imagine someone stealing it maliciously. It's customary to trade a mask or exchange it with one's friends...but to outright steal it? That's definitely against both the spirit and the laws of this fine holiday." Tionel obviously has no malice in the voice...he assumes that Syr has just recently arrived, and so he seeks to educate him a little upon Floating City customs. Somewhat poetically, he addresses the noblewoman with the kindest of voices, "Milady, we gladly accept your commission, though we do have a few more questions, if you should merely benefit the orphanage which seemingly is the great benefactor of us, as well as our base of operations and sole comfort in life, to think of all the children who merrily think of us as heroes and count us as their fathers ipso facto..." Tionel privately jokes to himself that some of these party members could be their fathers for all he knew. "And if it's not a horrible suggestion, m'lady, I do know that it takes a long time to procure these masks, especially one that must certainly be of such fine craft, but should you not at least ask the maker of this mask if he could make an alternate, perhaps a substitute? We will probably need to talk with him anyways, to learn more about this mask and who would want it. So, if you would give us his name and location..." "One last thing occurs to me, and I apologize," he holds up his hand, "for taking up so much of my gracious lady's time. Some of Gordo's questions do seem to resonate...who would do this? I'm afraid before we can accept this task, you should know something about me, if not the other members of the group. We are truth-seekers to the core. If we accept this mission, which I'm sure we will, then we will pursue it no matter where it goes or whom it accuses. Of course, we would always keep my lady's confidence, so answer Gordo's and the other questions as well as you can without fear of anything." He bows his head slightly. Tionel feels quite proud of his performance. When he needs to, he definitely doesn't talk like a nature-loving elf, and he loves chatting with humans.
Divinations and Clues [DM Jerry] Wednesday November 20th, 2002 9:54:46 PM
To Barick she says, "My mask is not stolen as much as it is lost. It disappeared during the ceremony last year. I recently heard as well as had it divinated that it was for sale again in a shop here in the city. I want you to find it for me.
"I have no clues as to who took it. Whoever it was went to great pains to hide all trace of themselves. I even hired a witch to discern the nature of the thief. She had the gall to tell me that it was not stolen at all!
I was told as well that I would not be able to find it. That task would fall to others. To you if you'll do this for me.
I have heard of Flaust's Orphanage. Some of the ladies groups that I am associated with have considered her in the past as a possible charity; however, everytime we've tried to help her, her uh, no offense--her charisma prevented much from being collected. You however, have great charisma. They'll simply adore you!
If you do this for me, I'll hold a luncheon for you to raise money for your orphanage. If you'll tell me where you live, I'll see that Gesic here bring you $1500 within the hour to buy the mask with and to cover any other expenses you may obtain in the quest for my mask. If you succeed, I'll reward you with a personal reward as well in the form of a wondrous blue diamond that you may put up for auction. After you become a hit with the ladies, it should bring you a pretty penny if they know you are the seller.
"I also have a list of shops that sell masks of quality as a starting place for your search."
She passes the list of shops to Gordo.
It says:
Normal Businesses that carry Masks:
Ozmic's Works of Wax Fence Level Auctions The Glittering Ghost Tavern
Stores that specialize in Masks:
Ye Old Mask Shop The Mask Emporium Living Masks Turtle Masks
"I do not want any of my set of friends knowing that I still persue this mask. I would instead prefer that they think I have given up on this folly. So I ask that you do not try to interview anyone other than storekeepers and the like. Do not mention my name or why you search for the mask. I do not want the reputation of being obsessed with this, even though I literally am.
There is no twin or possibility of reproducing this mask. It is unique. Part of it's charm.
So do we have a deal?
Turin Thursday November 21st, 2002 1:32:40 AM
Turin shrugs. "Keeping it quiet should be no problem on our side." He looks at the others. "This sound good to you?"
Gordo Thursday November 21st, 2002 4:20:05 AM
Gordo seems a little surprised at the offer of a reward for their good deed, but seeing that he is with a group now he says nothing.
"Sounds fine to me, Turin. It shouldn't be too much trouble to visit the shops to begin with and ask some questions. Lass, we'll do our best, on that you can rely. Well, fellows, where to start? How about Ye Olde Mask Shoppe? Is that the nearest?"
The big man beams at everyone in the carriage, eager to get on with the hunt.
Drew Thursday November 21st, 2002 9:30:25 AM
"It is her Cherisma that leads me to ask for your help, someone with your standing could find a front man to take up the cause with better skills in this area, someone who could make it thier mission to make sure the life of the orphanage is forever a high priority in this city...something like that... again all I ask is that you consider it. We will find your mask if it can be found." Drew then pulls out his mask from the last mask day. "I have no need of a new one, I have this Treant mask." Placing the piece of cloth over his face Drew dissapears and an ancient Treant suddenly appears in his place.
Tionel Thursday November 21st, 2002 12:28:10 PM
"It sounds good to me, Turin." The elf claps his hands at Drew's display. "Marvelous!" He beams and turns to the lady. "Obviously, m'lady, we accept your gracious offer and will start on your mission immediately." Note: Tionel asks the lady where her house can be found if he doesn't know. (I'm assuming Tionel would know this sorta thing) As they hop out of the stopping carriage and begin to walk towards the location of the first shop, Tionel comments to Drew, "Lovely mask, there. Mine is one that I've had for simply ages now. I'd ask to exchange it, but I've already talked with Muriel, this other entertainer I know, and we've agreed to exchange. Where did you get it? I simply adore the effect."
Show them this! [DM Jerry] Thursday November 21st, 2002 6:30:46 PM
Lady Firiona simulates a bow sitting down. I will be up all night filled with worry. Simply come to the Gold Level and ask a guard. They all know where my residence is. I throw a Guardman's Ball each year for them.
Show them this, my signet ring and you will be led directly to my residence.
She pulls a male sized ring on a necklace over her head and hands it to Gordo.
Now tell me where you live and I'll have your shopping money dropped off within the hour.
Once she hears the address, she wishes you well and holds her hand out for each to kiss as you leave.
Her wagon then streams towards the upramp and is gone.
About 30 minutes later, it returns bearing a nice chest filled with 3 smallish bags of platinum.
Turin Thursday November 21st, 2002 8:45:42 PM
Turin looks in the bags. "Platinum!" He reaches for one of the bags, then stops himself. "I guess we should be going now," he says, eyes fixed on the bags.
Barick Thursday November 21st, 2002 10:05:07 PM
Barick takes the lady's hand awkwardly in his giving her a quick shake. "It will be a pleasure to do this task for you Miss Firiona," he says beaming a smile at her.
While waiting for the money to arrive Barick mentions to Gordo, "You know these city folk are a strange lot. So much money dumped on such trivial things. I really think we need to talk to these friends Firiona's though, I'm really curious to see just how much money they'd unload on the orphanage."
Barick minds himself until the carriage arrives again. Looking over Turin's shoulder he gasps in amazement, "All this for a mask! It's practically obscene! Well I agree Turin, let's get this job done with."
Drew Friday November 22nd, 2002 9:45:56 AM
Drew removes his mask and places it back in its pouch, then he exits the coach. Once out he stretches and pops anything that was too bent up and sighs. I dont know how people can travele with out being able to see the outside. I know the skyt here is just magic but with out at least the illusion of it I think I would go quite mad."
Gordo Friday November 22nd, 2002 12:26:13 PM
Gordo takes the ring, then looks at the lady's proffered hand in puzzlement. "Is your wrist hurt, lass?" he inquires, curiosity writ large upon his face.
Then, seeing Barick shake her hand he assumes this is the correct thing to do, and so shakes her hand vigorously in a firm grip. "Fear not lass! All will be well!"
He nods at Barick's comments. "Aye lad, all this for a mask, it boggles the mind. Still, if it can help Mama Flaust I'll not stare a gift horse in the mouth."
He clambers out of the coach stretching, and heads back to the orphanage to await the platinum. He stares at it in open mouthed astonishment, having never seen so much money in one place before. "Well take me to the top of our stairs!" he rumbles, laughing in amazement.
When the excitementt has died down he says "Well then, shall we be off to Ye Olde Maske Shoppe first? Or should we question the servants at the lady's house?"
Barick Friday November 22nd, 2002 2:00:55 PM
Barick nods at Gordo's question, "I say we head off to the mask shop first. Try to keep this whole thing under our hats for now and then if nothing turns up there then we'll go talk to them."
Syr Friday November 22nd, 2002 4:53:37 PM
Syr nods at Barick's suggestion, "To the shops then. Good point with the secrecy, should we invent a plausible cover story? I would think that it would be fairly obvious to people when a handful of people are looking for a mask that there is something special about it. If we do find it, wouldn't the seller raise the price accordingly?"
Tionel Friday November 22nd, 2002 4:55:58 PM
Tionel, grinning, annoints the woman's proffered hand with a kiss, and then hops out of the wagon. He listens to the others plan out and comment upon their situation. "Okay, I guess we'll head to the Ye Olde first. I know the way..." He begins walking along there, leading the group so as to make good time. "At least we can be sure of a few things. Any mask maker who came across such a unique mask would hardly risk his reputation being ruined by claiming it his own when he knew not where it come. On the other hand, I doubt whoever has the mask, specializer or just emporium, would risk openly carrying someone's unique mask for obvious sale, if it was so rich as to be a nobleman's. I suggest we explain our situation to each shopkeeper, offering them a decent amount should they have it. "Remember, this isn't just a mask...why, it's a tradition that goes back years! It is even involved in the political control of this city! I, for one, wonder why a mask would disappear without being stolen. Perhaps a nightingale picked it up? Mayhaps a spell misfired? In any case, it's a peculiar occurence."
Turin Friday November 22nd, 2002 8:46:01 PM
Turin shrugs. "I say we split up. Three bags, three groups, we meet up at the Glittering Ghost when we've checked the others." He looks around. "That we, we do it faster."
Drew Monday November 25th, 2002 12:04:47 PM
Drew looks about and then says "Perhaps we should say that someone wearing the mask gave us something and we wish to find them and thank them? I have this diamond pin we can say was given to us." he pulls out a nice diamond pin. "Or perhaps we can say they droped it and we wish to return it?"
Barick Monday November 25th, 2002 4:04:47 PM
Barick nods his head with what Turin and Drew say, "Yes those both sound like good ideas. My only reservation with Drew's idea is that it does not put us in the position of acquiring the mask. Whoever has the mask, or knows the person who does, could quickly uncover our ruse and raise suspicions. However, if we were to pose ourselves as buyers of masks, that we were looking for something frightening and, especially, unique for Mask Day then we may very well use their greed against them. If we split of into three groups as Turin said then each group would have 50 platinums at least as a down payment should we uncover the mask's location. What say you all?"
Gordo Monday November 25th, 2002 5:10:46 PM
The big man scratches his head, a bit puzzled. "Pretend to be buyers eh? Well it's an idea lad, I grant you that. I was just going to say we were sent to find a mask that had gone missing." The subterfuge does not come easy to his way of thinking, being used as he is to saying everything plain and as he sees it. But these young tearaways know the streets of the city better than him, and if there's one thing he knows it's that there's plenty he doesn't know. He nods and says "Well then, I'm with you Barick. You can do the talking, lad, I tend to get a bit muddled with all this sort of thing."
Do a little Dance! Make a little love! Get down tonight! [DM Mask] Monday November 25th, 2002 7:13:02 PM
The party, having decided to go shopping, follows Tionel to "Ye Ole."
--wherever that is. ;)
The sun completely sets. Luckily, none of the shops looks to be closing as the whole town is out for a party the night before Mask Day. Nearly everyone is masked. Those who are not wear paper bags over their heads or have drawn hoods.
Music is playing. Fireworks is going off over the lake. Music is everywhere as people who don't even know each other spin in a dance down the streets following a troupe of masked bards in an open wagon.
Turin Tuesday November 26th, 2002 12:07:52 AM
Turin watches the people partying, and looks for Ye Olde Mask Shop, thinking that he can buy a mask for once.
Drew Tuesday November 26th, 2002 10:12:50 AM
Drew, very uncomfortable with all this dancing watches wearily, wondering if now would be the appropriate time to don his mask.
Tionel Tuesday November 26th, 2002 1:38:15 PM
The elf is also tempted to slip on his mask and join the bards, playing his own instrument, but he pulls himself to the task at hand. After all, he tells himself, there will be plenty of time to party tonight after the quest is done and the others go to bed. And that's when the real fun begins... "Looks great!.." without saying anything else (strange for the elf), he hurries up to the door and opens it. Quickly, he glides through the people who are looking or buying, searching for that elusive mask of the lady, as well as making sure that the current customers aren't examining it...
Baick d20=12 Tuesday November 26th, 2002 3:18:38 PM
Barick looks around at where Tionel has led the group and tries to place it with regard to his nearly nonexistant knowledge of the Float (12 INT check, Barick has Intuit Direction of 5 if this helps), "Now where are we he mumbles to himself?"
He then focuses on Ye Olde Mask Shop and makes his way towards the door. Upon entering he looks around and smiles at all the masks. What a strange celebration he thinks to himself.
Gordo d20=20 Tuesday November 26th, 2002 4:36:52 PM
The big fellow had all but forgotten the strange festival that is Mask Day. Such a harsh custom, he thinks. Still, it wouldn't do to disparage local traditions. He wonders what sort of mask he should choose for the day, all but forgetting their mission. A bear? A bison? Hmm, decisions...
Realising that Barick is not too sure of his destination Gordo asks passers by for directions, then attempts to follow them as best he can (Int nat 20!)
Here Poor Fella [DM Jerry] Wednesday November 27th, 2002 1:03:33 AM
Turin is lost in thought.
Drew looks uncomfortable.
Tionel enters a shop, but finds that it's the wrong one. A Leather shop called Hero's Hide.
Seems you can't just enter a shop and expect it to be the right one.
Barick, watching Tionel, wonders if he knows where he is or where he wants to go or how to get there.
Gordo asks passersby and finds that the Ye Ole Mask Shop is on the Gold Level of the city near the intersection of Emerald Cross and Gold Lane. It is across the street and down a bit from Wardd's House of Luck.
The party gets stares in that they don't have masks on yet. How unlucky! How rude!
A woman comes up to Gordo with a Skunk Mask and gives him a gold piece.
"Here poor fella. Go buy your wards some masks."
She pats him on the shoulder, smiles from under her mask and moves on down the road.
Gordo d20+4=13 Wednesday November 27th, 2002 9:36:23 AM
"Oh! Thank you lass, but these aren't my wards! And we were just off to buy masks. I'm very grateful and all for the gold piece, but we are not poor! At least, not so poor as we couldn't afford masks!" He looks down at his rather shabby clothing and grins, "despite how I might look! Please, lass, if you have a gold piece to spare, give it to someone who is really needy!"
He does his best to give the coin back without causing offense (Diplomacy 13).
Then he sets off (with as many of his companions as wish to follow him) saying "I've got directions, now let me see... Ye Ole Mask Shop is on the Gold Level of the city near the intersection of Emerald Cross and Gold Lane. It is across the street and down a bit from Wardd's House of Luck, or so I was told...
Setting off from the Fence Level Gordo does his best to remember the layout of the city (Using last post's nat 20). "OK, so we need to go all the way up through the Barracks and Merchant levels to reach the Gold" he mumbles, heading on up (OOC: Jerry, how does one move between levels? Are there lifts or stairs?). Finally arriving at the Gold Level he makes his way from the center of the city past a shop called, coincidentaly, Gordo's Transport. "Oh look!" he points, "I wonder if it's owned by a relative? My old da was from a long line of Gordos."
He carries on along Emerald Cross until he reaches a shop called the glitter Sanctuary. "OK, well this is the crossroads, and there's Wardd's House of Luck over there. Does anyone see the Mask Shop?"
Turin d20+4=15 Wednesday November 27th, 2002 2:19:22 PM
Turin looks around at the signs for any announcing Ye Olde Mask Shop, and, if he sees it, points it out to the others (Spot 15).
Syr Wednesday November 27th, 2002 4:37:50 PM
Syr quickly dons his tiger mask and smiles behind it as Gordo is taken as a charity case. He shrugs his shoulders as Gordo leads the party to the proper level and looks around for a Ye Olde Mask Shop.
Barick d20+3=13 Wednesday November 27th, 2002 8:56:58 PM
"This city is incredibly confusing. We're on 'fence' level you say? Is this where they make fences? What would city folk need fences for anyway? This is silly."
Barick follows Gordo and wonders if the blind are leading the blind. "We're on 'gold' level now? This is where the rich live then? Hmm, Ye Olde Mask Shop," Barick says looking around (Spot 13).
Drew Wednesday November 27th, 2002 10:09:38 PM
Drew looks at Barick and gapes mouth open. "You do know where you are tight? On the Bir Float. The sky you see above your head on every level but the top one is an ilusion. The fence goes around here so no one falls out and off."
Syr Thursday November 28th, 2002 2:30:37 AM
Syr looks over at Barik and says, "I've been here some time, did you know there is a half-level beneath the Gold called the Silver level? I think it's where older explorers retire to enjoy the sun." He walks away from Barick with a small smirk on his face to peer into Drew's eyes. "Tight? Bir? Have you been sipping some fruit drinks that were left out in the sun too long again?"
Tionel d20+7=20 d20+5=19 Thursday November 28th, 2002 1:07:56 PM
Having actually thought about the Ye Old Maske Shoppe, Tionel remembers where it is, after having actually been told. He giggles slightly to himself. (Yes, the man can giggle) He looks around trying to spot it, holding his tongue... "Ya know, this is harder than I thought it would be..."
Enter the Maw of the Mask? [DM Jerry] Saturday November 30th, 2002 9:50:09 AM
The lady takes back her gold coin, and leaves wishing him well and some new clothes.
"Live free sir!"
The group makes their way to the central shaft and finds the ramp entrance. The upramp circles up and in a clockwise motion. The downramp is above and cannot be seen. The upramp opening for each level always faces south. The downramp faces north.
As it is morning, you dodge and skip past carts of fruit and vegetables on their way up from storage to the Diamond Midway, The "hole"--which is short for "The Hole in the Bottom of the Sea", and Campfire Court above which serve the city as open marketplaces. The city, always crowded and stretched for space has little room for such luxuries as wide open marketplaces.
Curving upwards and always to the right, the central shaft magically allows one to see out to the sides to prevent claustrophobia. However, strong stone walls prevents anyone from actually falling off.
Passing the exits to the Barracks and Merchant Levels, you arrive on Gold level.
There are several coaches parked nearby hoping for a fare. A few stands are set up in a circle pattern in the middle of the street here and seem to be doing a brisk business.
Emerging on Platinum Pass you travel west and a bit south until you hit Emerald Cross where you take a sharp left back to the east. Following this road you soon spot the Glitter Sanctuary in the distance on your right and the signpost for Gold Lane. Further down the road on your left you see an old purposefully antique sign on a oddly rectugular building announcing Ye Ole Mask Shop.
There is a huge mask nearly 20 feet tall on the side of the building and rising above it's 10' height. The mask has an enormous mouth which serves as the door for the establishment.
Even from the outside, you can see that the store is jam packed with customers. A couple of two-headed weenie dogs are leashed to a post outside and greet those who pet them with a lick in the face. Even the 4 weenie heads wear paper masks although one of the heads on the 2nd dog is about to come off as the dog scratches at the top of his head.
Turin Saturday November 30th, 2002 1:29:22 PM
Turin looks inside. "Yeah, a lot of last-minute shoppers. Finding one mask in there will be fun." He goes to pet one of the weenie dogs and straighten the paper mask before heading inside.
Drew Sunday December 1st, 2002 11:26:41 AM
Drew looks around at his friends and family. "I have no skills for subtelys, so if it is accecptable to the rest of you I will simply sit and watch?"
Gordo d20+3=7 d20+3=13 Sunday December 1st, 2002 12:04:18 PM
"I'm with you Drew!" grins the big fellow. "All this trickery is not really my best point. I'll just be looking around."
He wanders around the shop, peering at the various masks, hoping to spot the one they were sent to find (Spot 7) or a wildebeast mask for himself (Spot 13). If he has absolutely no luck he will ask a sales assistant when one becomes free if they have any bison or wildebeast masks, and how much they are. He leaves the sweet-talking to the more silvertongued of his companions.
Tionel d20+5=14 Sunday December 1st, 2002 8:07:40 PM
"Ack...there's so many people here!" Tionel sighs, not sure how he'll ever get the attention of the assistant. He wanders around, looking for the mask (Spot 14). After a while, he will slowly head over to an assistant to ask...but that's only if he can't find it.
Syr d20+5=17 Monday December 2nd, 2002 4:24:30 AM
Syr reaches down and softly pets one of the dogs on his way into the store. As he does, he straightens the dogs mask and says softly, "Can't have you chosen... although it would be interesting." He straightens up and heads inside.
Once there he looks around for the mask or one fairly similar. (Spot 17) Assuming he finds something similar, he beckons to one of the shop's staff with an uprased palm.
Scene 2: The Race for the Mask!
The Mask of Illgilon? [DM Jerry} Monday December 2nd, 2002 6:53:41 PM
Turin enters the store after petting the dogs and getting several licks in the face before he can escape.
Drew sets up a watch outside next to a burly young man who is an obvious weightlifter. He sees drew and instinctively flexes his muscles to show his supposed superiority.
Gordo enters ths shop watching for things out of the normal inside. He is jostled around, but eventually gets a look at all 2 dozen or so people inside. He spots a young man with a pony tail showing the owner a picture.
Tionel, getting to the point, looks for the mask and asks for an attendant. He also sees the pony tailed guy and gets a glimpse of the face. Torl! The upstairs neighbor from yesterday. What's he doing here!
Syr, looking around the shop finds nothing that comes close to matching the mask in the drawing. He keeps bumping into a large hairy young man with the beginnings of a beard. Every time this happens he gets a stare.
The young man is heard by Gordo and Tionel to say, "No, I need this exact mask here in the drawing. No other mask will do! Have you seen it. Yes, I know it's the Mask of Illgilon. Yes I know what it is claimed to do. Yes I know it is considered just a legend. Yet, I know it's in this city somewhere and I must find it this night!"
He slams his hands on to the table to the surprise of many around him.
The owner, simply giggles. Then laughs. Big beer-bely laughing.
Muyhahahaaaaaoy! Boy! The Mask of Illgilon. Hey folks this guy is looking for Illgilon! Perhaps he believes in dwarves bringing chilren year end presents too! Mahahaaaaaa!
It is then that the ponytailed boy turns and sees Gordo. His face turns white. "Tolo! To me quick. We're outta here!"
He leaves the drawing on the counter for just a second.
It is the same drawing given to you by Lady Firiona!
Fast as lightning, Torl and Hairy Tolo push to the doorway of the store Tolo using his brawn to push people out of the way quickly.
Gordo d20=14 d20+2=19 d20+5=25 d20+5=11 d20+4=12 Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 8:03:36 AM
"Hey now, son, you just stop where you are!" booms Gordo, his voice loud and commanding (Intimidate 14). He pushes his way in front of the doorway, attempting to block it before the lad and his minder can reach it (base speed 40' per round, Str check 19).
If the big man is able to reach the man with the ponytail he attempts to grab him and prevent his escape (Attempts to pin: Touch attack roll: crit threat 25, 11 to follow up, Grapple check 12).
"Now then lad, what's all this about?"
Drew Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 9:48:18 AM
Drew rolls his eyes and looks away from the clearly pompus idiot.
Syr d20+9=29 Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 3:41:11 PM
Taking advantage of the situation, the small elf weaves through the crowd as the two attempt to leave. Rather than joining Gordo, he decides to follow Tolo at a small distance. (Hide 29, natural 20) (I assume Tolo is the boy that Syr keeps bumping into?)
Once outside, he tries to signal Drew before continuing to trail the large hairy kid.
Tionel d20+4=14 Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 4:20:47 PM
"Mask of Illgilon?" Tionel mutters to himself as the others run away, confident that his companions will be able to stop them. He runs a hand through his dark hair, thinking about it. (Bardic lore check DC 14?) Turning to the owner of the maskshop, he says, "Ah, sir, pardon the disturbance of my fellows..." He tries to smoothe things over so that the man will not kick them out for causing so much suffering when the poor man's trying to sell things.
Turin Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 5:16:48 PM
Turin, listening to the boy's conversation, starts to get suspicious. Then, as soon as he sees the drawing, his face pales.
He quickly chases after Torl and Hairy Tolo, making his way through the crowd as fast as he can.
Move it or lose it grandpa! [DM Jerry] d20=9 d20=3 d20=7 Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 7:02:14 PM
Torl, the ponytailed guy, is stopped at the door by Gordo (initiative of 9 is slower than Gordo) and bristles as he has to listen to his speech but does not look intimidated.
"I have no time to listen to lectures old man. I have a mask to find."(Reaction check of 3)
He tries to duck under Gordo's arm, but Gordo is too fast for him.(Dex check of 7)
Tolo, the hairy guy, finally arrives at the doorway and making a fist with one hand and says, "Move it or lose it grandpa!"
Syr makes it across the room and takes up a flanking position on Tolo.
The brawny guy next to Drew, hops instantly to his feet and goes to the doorway. Tapping Gordo on the shoulder--hard--he grins and points for Gordo to move. There is threat intent in his eyes. He doesn't speak.
The shopkeeper turns to Tionel and says, "Well at least there's one kid in here who has manners. How can I help ya boy? Does your mom need a mask?"
Turin, having seen the drawing that Torl has makes his way through the crowd to stand behind Torl and beside Tolo.
Many in the store have turned around to watch the confrontation.
Drew Wednesday December 4th, 2002 9:56:48 AM
Drew tapps the boy on the shoulder who was tapping Syr and shakes shakes his head no. The return promise completely evident.
Syr Wednesday December 4th, 2002 2:37:14 PM
Syr stands on the side poised for action. He searches Gordo's face carefully to determine which way the big man might go. As the bodybuilder taps Gordo on the shoulder, Syr watches Drew move to back him up.
Gordo d20+3=18 d20+3=12 d6+2=8 d20+3=7 d6+2=3 d20+4=20 Wednesday December 4th, 2002 5:59:19 PM
The big man spreads his great hairy arms wide, a broad grin on his face. He displays no tension or aggression, just friendly relaxation. "Now then my lads, no need for all these harsh words! Just a fair question plainly stated; son, you looked like you'd swallowed a bad pickle when you saw me just now. And I'm the first to admit I'm no oil painting, but usually when folk see me they don't go white and run off like a hare with the hounds at his heels. Just got me thinking there might be a reason you don't like me, and got me to wondering how we might change that." (Diplomacy 20)
As he says the words "A reason you don't like me" he watches the man's eyes closely. He checks to see if they stray to thing ring hanging around his neck, or if he can figure out what might be behind the young man's hostility (Sense Motive 18).
He pays the burly fellow who tapped him no heed, but is ready for an attack; if the fellow strikes him he responds with a couple of rapid punches (Readied attack, Flurry, AC 12 dmg 8HP, AC 7 dmg 3, all damage subdual), saying "Now that was just impolite, son."
Barick Wednesday December 4th, 2002 10:43:28 PM
Barick pulls himself from the daze he seemed to be in to observe the goings on with Gordo, Torl, and his cronie. "Oh this ought to get interesting, eh Krug?" He stands by waiting to see how the confrontation unfolds.
Want to get along? [DM Jerry] Wednesday December 4th, 2002 11:38:01 PM
Torl looks at Gordo, unflinching--disciplined.
"I don't like you because you got in the way of my plans recently. I don't intend for that to happen again. Want to get along? Go home and leave your mask hunting for another day. I intend to find that mask. Find it before you. Yes I know you look for it. But it will be mine. That I promise. It would be unfortunate if someone got hurt over a mask wouldn't it?"
Turin d20+4=15 Thursday December 5th, 2002 3:01:58 AM
Turin chuckles softly from behind Torl. "Yes, it would be unfortunate if that happened, wouldn't it? What's so important about this mask that it's worth getting hurt over?" He smiles grimly at Torl as soon as he looks at him, and at Tolo as well (Intimidate roll of 15).
Gordo Thursday December 5th, 2002 8:36:26 AM
"You know we look for it do you? My but you're well informed, son. I congratulate you on your resourcefulness lad, really I do. And confident too, I like that in a fellow."
Gordo continues to smile as he scratches his thick sideburns, then continues, ignoring Torl's implied threat; "But I'm afraid we'll not be able to accommodate you, son. See we made a promise, and I for one don't hold with breaking promises. So it looks like we'll be in competion! That should be fun, eh?"
"Well then, be off with you laddie, and good luck in your hunting! No doubt we'll see you again soon!"
Gordo steps aside to let the men pass, his expression of cheerful friendliness still in place.
(OOC: Jerry, does Gordo recognize Torl? He's not the same ponytailed fellow we captured and brought back to the big float by boat is he? Wasn't that fellow arrested?)
Once they leave he approaches the shopkeeper. "Sir, I'm sorry for any disturbance. No harm was meant, I assure you. If it's all right I'd like to buy one of your fine masks."
Gordo asks the shopkeeper for his opinion on what ,mask would best suit him, and takes whatever he is offered with good humour, paying whatever the asking price is (within reason!).
"Incidentally, it sounded like you'd heard of the legend of the mask that young fellow was after. What did he call it, the Mask of Algernon? What was this legend then? What was it supposed to do?"
Drew Thursday December 5th, 2002 8:55:54 AM
Drew steps aside and allows the others to pass, then looking back to his family he asks. "Why did they let him out of prision so quick and what is he doing looking for a legendary mask? It sounds like the large lady lied to us. I don NOT like being lied to."
Syr d20+5=15 d20+9=24 Thursday December 5th, 2002 4:18:33 PM
The elf visibly untenses as Gordo let's the threesome pass. Hearing the conversation he decides a bit more reconaissance is in order so he continues to trail behind the group looking at their weapons and figures with a warrior's eye. (Spot 15 to see how they are armed?) (Hide again at a 24 to follow)
Barick Thursday December 5th, 2002 11:16:04 PM
Barick shrugs as the two scoundrels pass, "Well crisis averted I suppose."
He enters the shop and looks around at the selection of masks. A bit puzzled he asks the shop keeper, "Which is your budget value mask? I am on a tight budget you see and I seek the greatest value."
Tionel Friday December 6th, 2002 2:13:44 AM
The lean elf looks around, shaking his head as his companions deal with the offendees. He'll figure out more about that later. "I already have an interesting mask, sir. But I'm more interested in tales, as I tell them as part of my trade. What's the mask of Illgyion, sir? It sounds interesting, and I'm in the mood for tales before a bit of revels...Besides, a unique tale about the day of masks is priceless..."
(OOC: Still a lil busy with finals, sorry.)
Drew Friday December 6th, 2002 9:04:06 AM
As Drew watches Syr go by he quietly so no one else can hear it, "Dont go further than you can scream."
Creation of Illgilon [DM Jerry] d20+5=23 d20+3=19 Friday December 6th, 2002 6:10:28 PM
(OOC: Jerry, does Gordo recognize Torl? He's not the same ponytailed fellow we captured and brought back to the big float by boat is he? Wasn't that fellow arrested?)
[Yes, he is the same guy. I thought that was plain. :)]
Torl answers Gordo, "I appreciate the gentleman's approach. May the best man win. As to why the mask is so important....well if the fat lady didn't tell ya I"m not going to. :)
He rushes outside, calls his goons to him, and the weight lifter and the hairy guy join him along with a youthful girl and a grown tall man who looks like a beanpole.
The shopkeeper answers Gordo and says, "A brave young man like you should have a dragon mask! I have them in various colors and you can get them with an illusion so that when you stick out your tongue it gives the illusion of breathing fire. Sound too! Only 100gp. 70 to a young man like you. However, I figure you'll just need the regular dragon mask which is 10gp. Made of wood and hand carved, it has a 25 year rating of not being picked....except for the black ones.
Suddenly the door of the store slams shut. The door glows golden. A glyph appears on the door. It is red.
Syr, Gordo and all others who were inside the store remain inside the enspelled door.
Laughing, Torl and his goons run off into the brightly lit streets in the direction of the lift.
The storekeeper laughs a hearty laugh again and says, "Son, The Mask of Illgilon is the creation of Illgilon, a Sorceror of great power in these parts. He was obsessed with not being chosen on Mask Day and with the help of a sponsor created a mask that would be magicked to prevent one from being chosen.
"It is said that someone as a joke, removed his mask as the procession came by and Illgilon was chosen. He screamed and cried and fought, but the power of the summoning took him. This was 18 years ago this year.
"The mask promptly disappeared. Yet the next year in this very store, it appeared on my wall the night before the procession. Every year since, someone has tried to buy and wear the mask on Mask Day. As to it's success, no one has been able to track it. Some say it's a Floating Legend and doesn't truly exist. Others say it's a ploy of those who sell masks to drump up business on the last night.
Personally, I think the whole thing is a bunch of hogwash. A thief planted the mask here that first year and something similar has happened since. It seems like the kind of prank the Lords of Diamonds would try to pull.
Turin Saturday December 7th, 2002 2:44:13 AM
Turin looks at the door, then looks for any windows. He turns to someone who works here, and asks (if there are windows, if not, just the second question) "Do the windows open? And are there any back doors?"
Tionel Saturday December 7th, 2002 12:18:59 PM
"Nonetheless, it is an interesting story!" Tionel laughs slightly, running a hand through his hair as he glances at the locked doors, then looks back to the shopkeeper. "Say, do you happen to have a back exit? I'd suggest no one try the front door unless they want a bit of a hotfoot or something." Privately, he wonders to himself...
Barick Sunday December 8th, 2002 2:32:17 PM
Barick spins on his heels as the door slams shut. "Curse my eyes for letting that crumb get the drop on me!"
He chimes in with the others, "Aye! where's the nearest exit out of here?"
Gordo Sunday December 8th, 2002 6:10:50 PM
"That's a mighty fine tale there, sir! A magic mask, appearing out of the blue like that! Wonderful!" grins Gordo, cheerfully trying on his wooden silver dragon mask. "And so is the mask, I'll take it!" he says, handing over 10 GP.
"So let me get this straight; the mask was supposed to have appeared here in this very shop one year after this wizard fellow was picked. The night before the procession you say. And then each year after that the mask turned up somewhere new? According to the legend, of course."
Once the shopkeeper has replied Gordo turns to his companions; "Lads, I'm sorry for messing up your subterfuge back there. I'm none too good at the old softly softly, just tend to come on out and say whatever's on my mind. Still, we know the score now, I suppose. Looks like we have to get to those other shops pronto. I know we can cover more ground if we split up, but I wouldn't like to run into Torl's gang on my own. It would be far safer to stick together. Assuming we can get out of this fine establishment, of course!"
If no alternate exit route is discovered, and no-one is able to deactivate the glyph, Gordo asks everyone to take cover behind the counter, and opens the door.
Syr d20+3=19 Sunday December 8th, 2002 6:16:20 PM
The elf watches the door shut and attempts to determine what the Glyph could represent. (Psicraft 19).
Syr moves toward the rear of the store, looking for an exit. Nudging Gordo he says softly, "I THINK they are now winning this race. Considering this is supposed to be a secret, how does Torl know about the fat lady? Any ideas on where to go next?"
Drew Monday December 9th, 2002 9:43:40 AM
Startled at the fact that the door slammed shut and that he saw no one do it yanks his axe from its hold and looks about the crowded street. If he saw the Pony tail man do anything he will give chase screaming for the city guard.
Losing the Race? [DM Jerry] Monday December 9th, 2002 8:59:21 PM
Turin, Tionel, Gordo, Syr and Barick along with others in the panicked crowd are shown through the owner's private quarters to the rear door where he calls for the guard to find a wizard to open the front door.
Gordo buys his mask and is thanked for his patronage and for not using violence in the shop.
Drew definitely saw both Torl and the tall man do something that resembled spellcasting. The tall man made motions like a spellcaster. Torl simply put his hands on either side of his head and stared with his eyes bugging out. (I'll leave it to you as to give chase or not.)
Tionel Tuesday December 10th, 2002 2:25:00 AM
"Come, let's hurry. I think if we still want to find the mask, and it's a worthy hunt, we should get moving. I don't think we should split up, 'cause if we do, those guys could mug whoever finds the mask, and we should definitely not proceed down the list if they're ahead of us. Let's go to the closest along the pathway... *swearing* if only we had a map of the area, or a good guide. What do you think?"
Syr Tuesday December 10th, 2002 2:29:04 AM
Remembering that his brother is alone out front with the competition, Syr weaves through the crowd and races around the store to where they left the half-orc, "Drew!" Assuming he spots him, he calls out, "Quick which way did they go?"
Turin Tuesday December 10th, 2002 3:07:47 AM
Turin shrugs. "That one guy, Torl, does something really freaky. We need to find a way to keep him from doing it. Magic is one thing, but that..."
Drew Tuesday December 10th, 2002 9:20:53 AM
As Syr and the others come out of the shop they hear and see Drew giving chase calling for the city guards at the top of his lungs while chassing the men and drawing as much attention to them as possible. "That Pony tailed man there and hir friends, them they sabatoged a door to a mask shop. Stop them, hold them for the guards!!"
(Did any respond to his screams from last post?)
Gordo d20+3=21 d20+3=22 d20=13 Tuesday December 10th, 2002 12:30:56 PM
The big man hears Drew yelling and sets off at a run, urging his companions to do likewise. For such a large man he moves surprisingly fast (Move 40). "We're right behind you Drew!" he yells, "Don't lose them!"
As he races down the street weaving gracefully through the crowds (Dex 21) he tries to spy the fleeing group (Spot 22! Good rolls!)
As they race down a level he thinks back. "Where were those other shops?" he shouts to his young companions. "Do any of you know where the other shops are?"
He remembers the note that Lady Firiona passed him, and pulls it out. It reads;
Normal Businesses that carry Masks:
Ozmic's Works of Wax Fence Level Auctions The Glittering Ghost Tavern
Stores that specialize in Masks:
Ye Old Mask Shop The Mask Emporium Living Masks Turtle Masks
He shouts the names out to his companions, hoping to jog someone's memory, including his own (Int 13).
Barick d20+3=11 d20=3 Tuesday December 10th, 2002 2:25:09 PM
Barick gives chase with the rest of the crew. He motions for Krug to follow him as he plucks his way through the crowd but has a difficult time keeping up with the others(Dex 11).
He hears Gordo's booming voice and tries to remember where the other shops could be but is so totally confused by the streets of the Float he is hopeless (Int 3).
Into the crowd [DM Jerry] Wednesday December 11th, 2002 10:47:26 AM
A crowd of celebrating citizens all wearing masks mass in front of the downramp, heading to bars and taverns as the night becomes late. Torl and friends, quickly try to lose themselves in the crowd as our heroes give chase.
[Drew please make a spot check DC 17 to keep them in your vision.]
The others need to make a spot check DC 10 to keep the running Drew in their vision as he chases the others in the crowd.
From nearby a group of soldiers on duty due to the celebration sit lounging near the downramp. One of them yells back at Drew.
"Calm down boy! She'll forgive ya in the morning."
He takes another swig of what is in his water flask.
(sorry for the late post. I'll post again tonight.)
Drew d20=19 Wednesday December 11th, 2002 11:28:30 AM
Drew makes his spot check and keeps chase. As he goes by he yells back at the guard. "I'll remmeber that sir when I have to report why a known criminal got past you in the morning."
Syr d20+5=6 Wednesday December 11th, 2002 1:13:03 PM
Syr easily follows Drew until they get to the crowds. His short height prevents him from seeing the big half-orc in the mix. After a short time he loses all sight of his brother and slows to a walk, confused on what to do next. (let's hear it for a natural 1!)
Knowing the others are somewhere nearby he calls out, "TURIN... BARICK... Gordo... Tionel... Where are you?"
Barick d20+3=20 Wednesday December 11th, 2002 1:24:55 PM
Barick easily keeps the large, bellowing half-orc in sight as he gives chase through the throng of revelers.
Gordo d20+3=17 d20+5=16 Wednesday December 11th, 2002 1:30:09 PM
Gordo too manages to keep Drew in his sights (Spot 17) as he races through the crowded streets. "I'm still with you, big fella!" he calls to his companion.
Hearing Syr over the general hubbub of the crowd (Listen 16) the big man raises his huge hairy arms into the air as he runs and bellows "OVER HERE LAD!! Follow the hairy hands!" He grins widely at the thrill of the chase. What fun!
Turin d20+4=13 Wednesday December 11th, 2002 5:28:39 PM
Turin sees Drew running, and quickly starts to run after him.
Endangering the Public [DM Jerry] d20+3=23 d20+4=5 d20+4=10 Wednesday December 11th, 2002 10:39:23 PM
The guard snorts at Drew's comments and says, "He has alot of nerve for an Orc. I think we need to ask him some questions as to why he's racing through traffic like that and endangering the public."
Another guard says, "Leave him be Zoyy. He might be one of those adventurer kids Lady Firiona asked us to watch out for. Come on. Let's go."
The two guards race towards the entrance of the lift whistling for more guards to join them.
----
Seeing that Drew is keeping pace with him (Spot DC d20+3=23) Torl ducks down in the crowd and dons his mask: a turtle mask of nondescript design. (Drew make another DC 17 check to keep him spotted with his mask on.]
[Folks please list in your Post Name field if you have your mask donned and include your mask's description from time to time.]
Turin, Gordo, and Barick continue to give chase, when suddenly from the side they hear a voice shout, "Web!" Pivoting your heads, you see the tall man grinning fiercely with webs spring shooting in all directions. [DC14 to keep running. Otherwise you're caught in the web.]
From nearby you hear the frustrated voices of Tolo and Nheel as they get caught in the web. [d20+4=5 d20+4=10]They scream curses at the tall man.
The tall man races on. [DC14 Spot to keep him in sight.]
Meanwhile Torl and Drew race on.
Syr comes up behind the web with nowhere to go. Many men, women and even a few children are caught in the web cursing and calling for the guard. [DC 10 to spot any caught in the webs. DC 14 to spot any who save and keep on running.]
Drew d20=8 Thursday December 12th, 2002 9:34:28 AM
Drew finnaly looses sight of them and curses under his breath.... Then turning around and seeing the mess of webs and such he rushes back to help cut and rip people free. When he sees the guard he looks at him deeply and then quietly so no one else can hear but the guard andhimself he says "I realize that most kids running, calling for a guard are probably just fooling, however as this mess indicates, some are not. Perhaps the error should be to investigate too many of them instead of not enough?"
Gordo (Wearing Silver Dragon mask) d20+3=12 Thursday December 12th, 2002 12:09:15 PM
Gordo is so busy waving his hands in the air and grinning that he completely fails to realise what is happening until too late.
"Hey, what the..." he shouts as he becomes hopelessly ensnared in the web, and crashes to the ground. His face and mask covered in sticky strands he looks up and sees Tolo and Nheel.
"Well now, fancy meeting you here!" he grins fiercly.
Syr (worn tiger mask) d20+5=23 d20+5=17 d20+5=16 d20+5=24 Thursday December 12th, 2002 2:18:53 PM
Syr comes up on the mass of sticky confusion and sees Drew (Spot 23) returning to help everyone out. With a sigh, he pushes his mask to the top of his head and proceeds to pull and cut the webs trying to extricate the innocent bystanders.
As he is cutting, he spots Tolo and Nheel (spot 17, 16). Calling loudly to the guards, "You may want to talk to THOSE two. They are close with the person who caused this! Maybe this time if you decide to hold them, they won't escape like their partner."
Turin d20+5=12 Thursday December 12th, 2002 4:41:39 PM
(Assuming it's a Reflex check) Turin gets stuck in the web, and curses, reaching for a dagger to see if it will cut through.
A Sticky Sight [DM Jerry] Thursday December 12th, 2002 6:38:45 PM
Zoyy, growls his hatred at Drew and reaches for his sword. As he takes a breath for words, his comrade cuffs him to the ground.
"Enough Zoyy! This boy is not the orc that killed your father and brother."
The other guy turns to Drew and says, "Thanks for your help friend. I apologize for my comrade. He has....issues. Let's see if we can't help these folk get free and then I want to hear your story. If there's a criminal on the loose I want to know. And it seems that at least someone doesn't want you catching him. :) That's evident."
Syr hears a commotion ahead. Sounds like trouble.
Barick, saving against the web, stands with Drew as he works to cut people free.
Tolo sneers at Gordo's cheerful greeting. Nheel grins back at him. "I like your attitude. You are a good opponent. Don't take stuff too seriously. I mean really, like now, we can sit here and sneer at each other or laugh. I prefer to laugh! Hehehehooooo! This is soo funny. Taken low by my own mage. Whoooooo!"
Turin begins to cut himself free. He frees a hand.
[All who have not spotted Nheel and Tolo may do so with a Spot of 10 now.]
Barick d20+3=10 d20+2=18 Thursday December 12th, 2002 9:05:58 PM
Barick cuts at the webbing carefully, making sure he doesn't injure anyone in the process. Suspecting what this spell is capable of he is guessing the mystical webbing will dissolve itself before long anyway (Spellcraft 18).
"Take it easy children, we'll have this off you in a moment," he reassures them as he works steadily. He also notices Nheel and Tolo out of the corner of his eye (Spot 10).
Syr Friday December 13th, 2002 2:54:17 AM
Syr rejoins the group in any way possible.
Drew d20=20 Friday December 13th, 2002 9:08:13 AM
Drews perseptions seem to light up and he seems to spot everything all of a sudden. As he does so he talks to the guard helping to cut people free and starts with the day that the gems were stolen.
Gordo (Silver Dragon Mask) d20+2=9 Friday December 13th, 2002 9:50:35 AM
The big man grins back at Nheel. "Laughter's always the best medicine, son. For everything except a hernia, as my old nan used to say."
He struggles to free himself from the web (Str 9), but is held fast.
"Say, could any of you lads cut me free?" he asks of the rescuers. "This stuff is stickier than than chef Milo's Sticky Toffee Pudding!"
Tionel (Wearing Two-Faced Mask) d20+5=22 d20+5=18 d20+5=24 d20+5=14 d20+5=22 d20+5=23 d20+5=18 Friday December 13th, 2002 12:33:06 PM
Hurrying up to join them, Tionel stops at the web, panting for breath. "Okay...guys, I've remember where a few of the places are." He sorts out Ozmic's Works of Wax (R#1), The Glittering Ghost Tavern (R#3), The Mask Emporium Living Masks (R#5), and Turtle Masks (R#6) in his mind, having figured out by jogging his memory where those places are in the city. He sorts them out in his mind, trying to figure out which one's closest. He doesn't actually spot the guys getting away, though.
Turin d20+4=14 d20+1=19 Friday December 13th, 2002 4:34:33 PM

No CastingOon the Innocent. [DM Jerry} Monday December 16th, 2002 12:40:36 PM
Listening carefully to Drew's story, the guard smiles.
"Thanks son. My name is Arturo. We'll put out a minor summons for this Torl fellow so we can talk to him. I think he's up for a fine.
"We don't look kindly upon inflicting magic upon the populace."
He then turns his attention to the two bodyguards of Torl.
"Boys, I'll need to have you answer some questions and hear your side of the story, but I need to return to my post. Come with me you two and we'll get this straightened out."
"Looks like Torl gets into mischief quickly. My sheet here says he was taken in for questioning yesterday for minor theft, leaving the island without a writ, and harming the public with magic. If it wasn't for the fact that you guys also left the island, we would probably have let him stay the night behind bard. But as it was, we let him go, being a youth and all. Mistake that."
"Well Drew, you and your comrades may go. Good luck on your hunt for the mask. I wanna see if it you find it. I'm curious now. Oh, and remember, no casting of magic upon the innocent."
He takes the two bodyguards in arm and marches off with them towards his guard station.
About the time that the last folk are being freed, the web collapses and disappears except for a slight stickyness upon the floor and on everyone's clothes.
Barick Monday December 16th, 2002 5:16:30 PM
Barick nods to the guards as they leave with Torl's henchmen. "Well I suppose we had better get a move on here. Torl must have quite a lead on us now. Tionel, which shop do you think Torl was headed to next judging by the direction he left in? We'll either be chasing him all night or perhaps we should take our chances, let him have the next shop, and try to get ahead of him? What say you all?"
Drew Monday December 16th, 2002 7:23:48 PM
Drew smiles after the guard. "Well its ggod to see good men in a tough position."
Gordo Tuesday December 17th, 2002 9:58:14 AM
"Aye, our thanks, Arturo. Well, I guess it doesn't much matter where Torl is headed; we just need to find the nearest mask shop. Let's go!"
Drew Tuesday December 17th, 2002 10:24:07 AM
Yep....
Syr Tuesday December 17th, 2002 2:04:03 PM
Syr rejoins the group with a relieved grin. "I say we hit the Living Mask, it just sounds appropriate."
Turin Tuesday December 17th, 2002 6:28:29 PM
Turin shrugs. "Wherever, I've got a score to settle with Torl."
Tionel Tuesday December 17th, 2002 7:47:33 PM
The elf quickly wanders back over to the group. Sighing somewhat, he asks, "Does anyone know the way...?"
Barick Wednesday December 18th, 2002 3:51:19 PM
"This is getting us no where fast. Let's hire a guide to show us the way around. Even a coach might be faster." Barick begins looking around for either a guide of some sort or a coach for hire.
Syr Thursday December 19th, 2002 2:39:50 AM
Syr's eyes light up, "Wow, I've never rented a coach before! The only time that I've even been in one was earlier today. You don't get too much of that growing up in an orphanage."
Gordo Thursday December 19th, 2002 8:32:05 AM
"Good idea, lad. The lady gave us money to track down this mask, so we might as well use it. Now all we need to do is find where to hire coaches from!"
ADM Jan Thursday December 19th, 2002 10:50:50 AM
As luck would have it, there appears to be a carriage halt that can be seen down a nearby street. Two carriages are halted there, both are open top, their drivers stood talking, sharing a joke. One carriage looks to have much better livery than the other, which looks a bit flea-bitten.
There appear to be other options too - flat bed delivery carts, empty and returning to the levels below.
Turin Thursday December 19th, 2002 11:33:36 PM
Turin frowns. "Let's take the ratty one. It's not too nice, but it'll do, and I have a feeling this cost of this mask is going to be a great one."
Drew Friday December 20th, 2002 9:53:46 AM
"Ahhhh another carrige....."
Tionel Friday December 20th, 2002 10:20:11 AM
Tionel glances at Turin, pondering...and then says to the driver of the carriages, "Oh, driver...could you perchance take us all to the nearest mask shop? Specifically..." and he rattles off the list that they're given, minus, of course, the one they've now been to. "We're in a hurry, if you know what I mean. And, with the size of some of my companions, we're going to have to rent both your carriages." He takes out a handful of gold pieces and hands them to both drivers. (prob'ly 4 or 5 each...he's good at making few numbers appear many.)
Gordo Friday December 20th, 2002 10:24:14 AM
The big man clambers up onto the chosen vehicle, ready for the chase to commence.
Barick Friday December 20th, 2002 3:34:46 PM
Barick climbs up into the carriage after Gordo.
"Let us make haste, time waits for no one especially now."
Ratty Happenings [DM Jerry] Friday December 20th, 2002 5:43:18 PM
As you all clamber abord the ratty carriage, a man who looks similar to a rat himself says, "Ok then goodpeople, where would you like to go?"
Once he hears the destination and that you're in a hurry, he says, "Well OK then. Wish us luck."
He yells "AiiiYA!" and the two horses take off... but the wagon doesn't as the yoke and harness break off trailing after the horses.
The rat man simply cries.
A woman who could have been the rat man's sister says, "Told ya Whiskers. Gotta spend your profits on your wagon instead of the bottle."
She turns to you and flashes a toothy smile.
"Come on folks. I'll take ya everywhere you want to go. Five gold per destination. Well? You said you were in a hurry to catch that guy who cast the web on everyone. Let's go!"
Turin Saturday December 21st, 2002 3:14:46 PM
Turin shrugs. "Sounds good to me."
Gordo Saturday December 21st, 2002 4:44:08 PM
The big man roars with laughter as the horses take off down the street without them. "Whiskers, old lad, I'd get running if I were you!"
He hops up behind the grinning woman and says "Lass, you're harsh but fair. 5 gold it is, on the condition that you keep up with your horses!"
He winks cheerily at Whiskers.
Tionel Sunday December 22nd, 2002 3:03:28 AM
At first, Tionel feels sorry for the man with the horses running away and all...but then, hearing about how he spends his money, it turns to mirth. He hops up into the carriage, silently wondering how likely they are to get there in time... "Perhaps we're in the wrong sort of business...our benefactor seems to desire not to be chosen as the new head. Seems to me, it's a bit like trying not to fulfill one's civic duty..."
Syr Monday December 23rd, 2002 3:28:12 AM
Syr squeezes into the carriage between Tionel and Gordo. "Onward ...time is wasting!"
Drew Monday December 23rd, 2002 11:09:31 AM
Drew looks sternly at the woman and then says. "we did not say we were in a hurry to catch the man who cast the web spell, we were in a hurry to get to a mask shop."
Barick Monday December 23rd, 2002 4:20:05 PM
Barick laughs along with Gordo, "I'm right behind you, let's do it!" He waves his trusty wolf to his side as he follows the old lady to the next mask shop.
A Lone Figure [DM Jerry] Monday December 23rd, 2002 6:59:09 PM
As you step up onto the wagon, a lone figure approaches as if to ask you something. [This is Matt's entrance folks. I'll leave it up to Matt and his character as to what he says and how he looks, etc.]
Gordo Tuesday December 24th, 2002 5:42:02 PM
Seeing the figure approaching them the big man flashes a friendly grin.
"Can we help you, son? Only we're in a bit of a hurry, see, so you'd best make it quick!"
Syr Thursday December 26th, 2002 1:14:29 AM
Syr, eager to be off in the carriage, eyes the approaching figure warily.
Gordo Saturday December 28th, 2002 6:02:21 AM
"Well lad? What was it you wanted?"
The big man is eager to be off in pursuit of their quarry. The longer they wait the more of a head start that rascal Torl will gain over them. And having promised the Lady Firiona to track down the mask (now revealed as the fabled mask of Illgilon), for a not inconsiderable reward that would end up going to Mama Flaust's needy orphans, it certainly wouldn't do to lose it to that young ponytailed whippersnapper.
Gordo grins to himself. Back in the big Float barely a few days, and already he's tied up in a rare old adventure! These younguns are proving to be a bad influence!
Tionel d20+5=6 Saturday December 28th, 2002 12:53:44 PM
Tionel stared out the window as he sits down, whistling an interesting tune he'd heard in the taverns...rather badly, actually. (Performance roll: Damn 1...). Realizing he can't get it, he pauses and glances at his companions to gauge their moods. The elf was still uncertain as to their quest. Should they recklessly pursue Torl, who has merely cast a spell temporarily stopping some of his companions? Or should they spend their time searching for some fabled mask, with an implied curse and wanted for probably ill-gotten methods? Why not just spend the night partying away? Still...he had to admit it was exciting.
Turin Sunday December 29th, 2002 4:35:32 AM
Turin looks at the newcomer. "Well, what do you want?"
Barick Monday December 30th, 2002 2:10:44 AM
"Hurry friend, be out with it! We have vermin to catch!" Barick looks anxiously at the stranger who is interupting their pursuit.
The Figure - Bog (Matt) Monday December 30th, 2002 10:47:00 PM
The figure looks at you startled each time someone else speaks to it. He looks from one to the next to the next then shakes his head.
He looks only so slightly worse than the condition of Whisker's carriage. His form is quite mysterious as he wears several layers of robes and wears a cloth skull cap which dangles long past his ears although you cannot totally tell which of his ensemble is actually garment and which is the crusted filth which seems to be prevalent about his person.
Curiously he shakes his head again grinning, then sticks his finger in his ear and shakes vigorously.
"I 'adn't 'eard so much o' this speak at me for so longin' a time."
The "man" grabs the handle lightly and opens the door. But a slight hesitation crosses his frowning face. He thinks a bit, smiles and takes a step back, mumbling a bit. Fluffing up his garments he suddenly spins and shakes causing his robes to rustle furiously kicking off bits of grime and filth. Strangely enough it sounds like it's accompanied by...the sound of rainfall.
His rustling finished, the man opens the door and helps himself inside and squeezes himself into the seat and chews on some unseen thing and scratches a now-seen slightly pointed ear while the "sound" changes to that of busily squeaking rats.
"Well, M'n you need'n a guide knows verm'n, id'n ya?"
Off to the races! [DM Jerry] Tuesday December 31st, 2002 9:52:17 PM
The ratwoman says, "Well get in boy. We've no time to..."
And she's off!
....racing for position among the wagons heading down in the cart lane.
....weaving in and out of traffic.
....turning on two wheels.
"Everyone lean right kids!"
Around the bend to the 2nd level...3rd level...
"Hey Zionel! Ratgirl here. You see a kid mage dressed like a fool headed this way casting spells?"
"Yeah! Heading down to 5th. Something about Dartt's Used Maskshop a fight over a mask."
"We're on it! Hey Zionel! Blaze a trail for us eh? Lives or money is at stake!"
"EeYiiiii!"
Gordo Wednesday January 1st, 2003 8:49:19 AM
As the filthy fellow clambers in beside him Gordo raises an amused bushy red eyebrow. Now here's a fellow who makes up for in confidence what he lacks in personal hygene. "Well son, you're a dark horse and no mistake. A guide eh? Well I don't see..."
Anything further the big man was about to say is cut off as the wagon jolts forward and he grabs for the nearest handhold. Through clenched teeth, and bouncing up and down as their carriage speeds around the bends, the big man manages to spit out;
"Th-th-the name's G-G-Gordo, puh-puh-pleased to meet you lad!"
Syr Thursday January 2nd, 2003 12:27:09 AM
Syr grudingly moves aside as the stranger enters, "What do we need a guide for?"
Looking at the hygiene challenged newcomer he utters, "Hey, Ya got a name?"
Tionel Thursday January 2nd, 2003 3:59:59 AM
"Well...hello..." Tionel doesn't know what to make of the new man. Even though he sometimes would wander through woods and uninhabited areas for a while, perhaps even gaining fleas and ticks during said stay, he considered himself a generally clean person. Looks are quite important to a musician, the handsome elf thinks to himself. At the sight of the ears, Tionel almost faints. An elf, this dirty? No, no...he reminds himself. Orcs have pointy ears, too. Obviously, the man is an orc. As they tumble effortlessly around, he tries to follow the driver's instructions, as insensible as they seem. "I'd rather be dancing..." he mumbles.
Turin Thursday January 2nd, 2003 5:37:51 AM
Turin looks at the newcomer. "Someone who knows vermin, eh? Two or four-legged?" He smiles coldly.
Dartt's Used Maskshop [DM Jerry] Thursday January 2nd, 2003 7:22:17 PM
As the questions accost this stranger in the wagon, the group sidespins into the pedestrian lane which is empty at the moment to pass a slow cart and horse. Emptying out onto Sailors Fork the group wheels in and out of the sailor traffic turning NE to follow the road. Then left upon Grappling Hook and north on Dagger Point a ways to where the road turns left near the northern edge of the city. To the left is the famous Giggling Ghost. A small but popular Tavern. To the right is Dartt's Used Maskshop. A small crowd is gathered looking into the windows: tavernfolk curious as to the commotion inside the maskshop.
[OOC: Please note that we are a bit behind the rest of The Wold in time right now. This Giggling Ghost is the smaller more cozy version before it burned down. The new grand opening of the huge new improved GG has not happened yet in our timeline.]
Gordo d20+2=12 d20+3=22 d20=19 Friday January 3rd, 2003 8:30:25 AM
"Good driving, lass!" cries a grinning Gordo as they rattle along at top speed. "Woo-hoooo!"
When they screech to a halt at the shop he looks to his companions he says "Well unless I miss my guess young Torl has beat us to it, and has decided to make a nuisance of himself. What say we discourage him?"
To the newcomer he says "So you're a guide, eh son? Well if you know a back entrance to this place it sure wouldn't hurt to show us it. I'll head in front ways, but if we can get in the back way too it'll cut off any chance of escape for that young pup.
The big fellow vaults out of the wagon and makes straight for the shop entrance. He muscles and weaves his way through the crowd (Str 12, Dex 22) in an attempt to gain access to the shop.
"'Scuse me! Sorry! Coming through! Mind your backs! Oops, sorry 'bout that!"
Turin Friday January 3rd, 2003 4:01:24 PM
Turin jumps out after Gordo, getting ready for, well, anything.
Syr d20+3=18 Friday January 3rd, 2003 4:37:58 PM
The small elf looks at the dense crowd and shakes his head. "I'm going to try and find this other entrance. Anyone can join me or fight through the mass of bodies...?" With that he heads to the other side of the building looking for another way in. If he finds a locked door, he will listen at the door (listen 19). Otherwise, he enters the rear of the shop.
Deploying for Action [DM Jerry] Friday January 3rd, 2003 9:32:53 PM
Syr runs around towards the rear of the shop. It takes time and he gets into the alley, but not around the corner.
Turin and Gordo runs for the entrance with Gordo swimming through the crowd as fast as he can.
He makes it to within about 5' of the doorway and spots two thiefly types in the doorway blocking the way. Both have daggers drawn and sneers daring the populace to push past them into the shop.
The shop front is bright yellow in color with a sign written on a giant mask tot he side of the door. To the left of the door is a large bay window, with part of the crowd pushing and shoving to get a better view of what's going on inside.
Gordo ends up about 3 people deep from the front of those facing the thieves. Turin is at his flank.
[Jerry OOC: Folks I'm going to take a liberty here and ask for someone to sub for Anthony/Drew for a week or two. If you are willing, please email me.]
Turin d20+4=17 Saturday January 4th, 2003 1:23:32 PM
Turin, seeing the two, starts elbowing his way to get closer. As soon as he has an unblocked view of the thieves, he chuckles, and says, "You know, it's probably a good idea to move to the side." He readies his spiked chain, daring them to stay. (Intimidate, 17)
Tionel Saturday January 4th, 2003 2:20:45 PM
Hopping out of the carriage, a bit after Gordo and the others have gone racing towards the front, Tionel dusts himself off and looks about. "Hmmm...I think it's safe to say, if they do get out, we're going to still need a carriage. Thank you for the ride, madam...and if you would wait a minute, we might need your services again." Tionel graciously pays and tips the driver. Then, he turns back to the crowd and scans it...pondering.
Drew [by Scott] Monday January 6th, 2003 1:44:02 AM
The carriage squeaks slightly as he gets out. Drew looks at the building searching for a front window. Slowly pushing his way through the crowd he draws his axe as he approaches the store front. Due to the press of people, he holds it carefully away from the innocents.
Syr Monday January 6th, 2003 1:45:12 AM
Knowing his friends will soon need help, he moves through the alley as fast as possible, hoping to find a door.
Bog Monday January 6th, 2003 3:01:16 AM
Rushed along the bumpy track with not but a moment to catch his breath, Bog nods as they pull up to their stop and watches as everyone frantically tumbles out. He obligingly lets them all pass before stepping quietly out himself and begins fumbling through his robes until he produces a silver piece which he hands to the driver.
"Thank ye," he says smiling and deposits the mud-crusted coin in the driver's hand.
He then turns and trundles to the shop folding his hands together.
"Hmmmm....if'n I wanna get in, I wonder..."
He reaches into a dark velvet pouch and pulls out a blob of fur, which he strokes.
"H'kay, Dmitri friend. Kinya get in? Find us a way and thin op'n it up fer us."
He then sets the blob of fur down near the side of the building, perhaps close to any small opening, cracks, holes under the house by the ground, etc.
He pokes the the fur. "Git mov'n."
Gordo d20+5=15 d6+2=5 Monday January 6th, 2003 4:06:50 AM
Shoving his way through the last few folks in front of the shop, Gordo comes face to face with the two knife-weilding thugs.
"You heard my friend here, boys; we're coming in, and we can either go past you or through you. Your choice, lads" says the big man, his ever-present easy grin still in place.
He steps forward and (if the hood nearest him does not step aside) launches a sudden and violent headbutt at the man's nose (AC 15, 5HP subdual damage, DC 14 or be stunned (Stunning Blow)).
You Can Come In Man! [DM Jerry] Monday January 6th, 2003 7:46:24 PM
The first man reacts to Turin's Intimidate by holdiing his hands in the air and saying, "Hey man. No sweat. You can come in man!"[Hero Point awarded to Turin]
The second looks at the first one in confusion and surprise. He pivots to allow Turin and Gordo to enter and then swipes a few threats himself against the remaining crowd.
Tionel scanning the crows notices that most of these people carry beer mugs or wine glasses and have left the Giggling Ghost across the street to come see what the commotion is. Others are passersby and revelers.
Drew makes his way about halfway through the crowd. He does see a front bay window.
---------
Syr turns the corner of the alleyway and hears two voices from the shadows.
The first voice says, "Well now, what do we have here?
The second voice says, "Boy it's a little late for you to be out in a dark scary all along isn't it?"
The first voice says, "Son better leave us backpack. We'd hate to have something bad happen to it."
The second voice adds, "Yeah and that ring on your finger too. I fancies that."
The first voice concludes, "Just don't make any sudden moves with that axe boy. You'd hate to have an arrow in your throat. Now nice and easy. Put the ring in the pack and kick it towards us real gently."
-------
The blob of fur is motionless. [See my email Matt.]
-------
Inside, the commotion rises to a fever pitch.
Tionel d20+8=23 Monday January 6th, 2003 11:03:55 PM
To do his part in both getting the attention of everyone, clear the crowd, and make it easier for the rest of the people, Tionel rolls up his sleeves and withdraws a mandolin. Suddenly, his voice calls out loudly, "If I may have your attention, please," as he plinks out a loud, rather nice sounding chord... With that, he launches into a nice little, rather dirty ballad about a maid and her employer. With all his skills, he plays and heads over to the inn, intent on drawing as many people who simply are looking for a good time back to the inn and away from the store, thus clearing the way for his companions... (Perform check 23, Bardic Music Use #1 )
Gordo d20+3=12 d20+5=20 Tuesday January 7th, 2003 8:55:21 AM
"Good work, lad!" grins Gordo to Turin as they race inside. "I thought we had a scrap on our hands there for sure!"
Once inside he scans the shop, hunting for Torl and his accomplices (Spot 12, Listen 20), specifically the young girl and tall beanpole fellow.
He hopes fervently that some of his companions follow them or Syr shortly. Torl is a tricky customer, and although two of his gang are out of commission, there are still more left.
Turin d20+4=5 d20+4=6 Tuesday January 7th, 2003 2:42:57 PM
Turin goes inside, chuckling and nodding at Gordo. He also looks around for Torl, but is confused by the scene in front of him. "Where are they?" he whispers to Gordo.
Bog Tuesday January 7th, 2003 4:23:59 PM
Bog stands confused for a few moments, then pokes at the fur again. He picks it up and shakes it about, but it rather jsut falls apart and blows off in the wind.
"Hmmmph!" he grumbles, "Shed'n. Now war'd hit goo?"
He starts searching through the pouches and bags which hang from his belt.
Stop thief!!!! [DM Jerry] d20+10=20 Tuesday January 7th, 2003 6:37:58 PM
Tionel is like the Pied Piper! As he begins to play, people begin to say Ooooh! and Aaaah! and soon their attention is riveted. They begin to head back to the inn en masse.
Why watch a fight you can't see when there's dancin' to do! And with masks on, everyone gets a dance partner, no matter how ugly they are!
The door opens onto an average inn. A staircase runs up the left hand wall and doors to inn rooms run along the balcony. The balcony turns and runs also across the back of the tavern where it ends against the right wall. Against the back wall of the tavern under the balcony is the bar proper. A fireplace is in the wall on the right. Tables are spread throughout the place and 4 old chandeliers are centered in a square pattern over the seating area.
A squealing ghost comes racing at Tionel. "Whee....thanks mister. Things were getting mighty scarce over here. And it's about time for the night's activity as well and music and dancin will get them stirred up mighty well! Thanks!"
Gordo, meanwhile hunts for Torl and his accomplices. He doesn't see them, but Torl spots him. (Spot of 20) Gordo does hear a female voice that says, "No not that way!"
Turin also hears the voice and turns just to see to his horror that someone has the mask!
And with a crash, the young girl is thrown by the beanpole through the window. She has a mask under her arm!
Beanpole screams! "Run girl run. We got it!"
The owner screams in return. "Stop thief!!!! Stop her someone!"
Torl dives across the room making for the window.
Bog stands outside confused about a piece of fluff.
Syr d20+5=15 d20+2=8 Wednesday January 8th, 2003 2:26:41 AM
The elf slows down his frantic pace and pushes his tiger mask on top of his head to get a better view of his adversaries (spot 15). Voice trembling slightly, "Look guys, I'm not looking for trouble, I just have to help my friends for a few moments." (Diplomacy 8) Realizing his plea is probably falling on deaf ears, he steels himself and continues moving slowly through the alley searching for the door.
Drew d20+10=22 Wednesday January 8th, 2003 2:45:20 AM
Drew moves up to the door and speaks menacingly to the two thieves, "This is not your fight. Don't you think this would be a good time to leave?"
He moves to the front window he saw earlier, trying to see what is going on inside.
Gordo d20+9=27 d20+9=18 d20+4=6 Wednesday January 8th, 2003 7:51:32 AM
"DREW! TIONEL! WHATEVER-YOUR-NAME-IS!" roars Gordo, knowing his companions are still outside the building, and no-doubt have a view of the girl who just came flying out the window. "STOP THAT LASS! SHE HAS THE MASK!"
Should he stop Torl? Or Beanpole? Or head after the girl? Could she just be a diversion, the mask under her arm maybe an illusion? They do have a mage. Deciding that the mask in view is his first priority and that he lacks the luxury of time to make a better choice, Gordo races towards the window and leaps through it in hot pursuit of the young lass, avoiding any blows aimed at him by the two hoodlums. If by some miracle he reaches the girl he attempts to grab at her, but clumsily.
(Run: Fast Movement (40'), Jump 27, Tumble (if neccessary to avoid AoO) 18, Grapple touch attack 6).
Turin d20+3=10 d20+5=19 d20+5=15 d20+1=19 d20+3=13 Wednesday January 8th, 2003 3:30:44 PM
Turin takes off after the girl, following Gordo through the window, and, if possible, tripping the girl with his chain. (Jump 10, Tumble 19 if necessary, 15 on a trip attack (touch), strength roll of 19 (if she doesn't win with a dex/str roll (whichever is higher), she's tripped) trip defense roll of 13 if she wins (she has to roll higher than strength on that one) if she succeeds, Turin drops the chain.)
Bog Wednesday January 8th, 2003 5:47:55 PM
"Mmm mmm Hu what?" says Bog looking up at the screaming.
He trudges around to the front of the building.
"Hey., you yong'n shouldn' be steelin' lak dat. Mmbulrubul tings dat fly swarm'm round'n git that guy...er....gal!" He then waves his arms about and tosses some different colored filth into the air. (Different at least from the filth that layers his body).
[Summon Swarm on the girl, trying for flying bugs.]
Scene 3: The Brawl For It All
Git that guy...er....gal! [DM Jerry] d20+9=27 d20+4=15 Wednesday January 8th, 2003 7:54:40 PM
The thieves run after the girl and Drew's words fall upon empty space.
Screaming one says, "The Mask is in play! Converge!"
Syr sees the two thieves threatening him run for the street forgetting him totally.
Beanpole looks in shock as Gordo leaps through the glass window after the girl.
Turin jumps through after Gordo.
[Both need to make Reflex saves at DC 20 to roll and come to your feet. Failure is 1d4 damage from the glass and the rough landing.]
As the girl rolls [d20+9=27] and comes to her feet, Bog casts his spell. The Girl suddenly screams as she is surrounded by a swarm of beetles. The mask suddenly flies from her grasp [d20+4=15] and crashes through the bay window of the inn!
[Gordo and Turin need to roll even/odd to be out of the area of the swarm. Odd is always success with such rolls.]
[Sorry Turin is not close enough to make his attack]
Tionel d20+9=25 d20+7=24 Thursday January 9th, 2003 12:44:28 AM
Tionel is currently in the inn, grinning at the ghost and launching into a ditty about a drunk centaur and an elven woman, when he hears Gordo calling for him... He'd almost forgotten about the quest. He stands up and slowly makes his way along to the front while playing (DC 25! Sweeeeeet!), and just as he finishes the song the window next to him crashes open! With his quick reflexes, he pulls his cloak about his face, and glances to see what made the crashing sound.. (Spot DC 24! :) ) If he sees the mask, he stumbles slightly as though in pain, falls next to the mask (his hand and cloak conveniently covering it) and tucks it into his jacket pocket. (Should I make a roll to do so?)
Gordo d20+5=19 d4=3 d20=11 Thursday January 9th, 2003 9:00:22 AM
"Hoop-la!" grins Gordo as he sails through the window. "Ouch!" he grunts as he lands in a shower of glass (Reflex 19, Dmg 3HP). Stumbling he fails to spot the swarm of insects heading his way.
"Ouch! Ow! Ooh! Get off!" comes the big man's muffled voice from within the swarm, followed by "Ack! Ptui! Phut! Yuck!" as he tries to spit out bits of beetle.
Turin d20+5=23 d2=1 d20+4=6 Thursday January 9th, 2003 11:45:02 AM
Turin manages to avoid the glass as he leaps through, and rolls, unawares, to the side of the swarm. "What the... where'd she go?" Turin looks around, wildly. (Spot check of 6)
Syr Thursday January 9th, 2003 2:52:15 PM
Syr sees the two thieves bolt for the street and proceeds to follow. Gritting his teeth, he puts on an extra burst of speed (Use Burst, +10 movement). Making it back to the street he looks for the girl that Gordo was bellowing about. As his eyes sweep the crowd, he also makes sure he knows where the two thieves are.
Drew Thursday January 9th, 2003 3:08:58 PM
Seeing the girl and swarm in front of him his eyes follow the path of the mask. Sparing a concerned look for the bug spitting big man, he moves protectively over Tionel and faces all that are looking for the mask. Softly to Tionel he says, "Get back in that carriage, I will protect you."
Enjoy and begin! [DM Jerry] d20+5=18 d20+7=21 d20+9=25 d20+11=20 d20+2=8 d20+10=13 d20+7=20 d20+6=8 d20+5=6 d20+4=15 d20+3=18 d20+8=13 Thursday January 9th, 2003 10:41:54 PM
Tionel seems to have a very popular idea. People in the inn, seem to strangely be waiting for something and this mask coming in through the window must have been it. For at least a dozen people pounce, pretend to fall, or just literally dive for the mask.
Like a bobbing ball the mask bobs from fingertip to fingertip.
Tionel, make a Reflex save. Highest roll gets the mask! My rolls are: d20+5=18 d20+7=21 d20+9=25 d20+11=20 d20+2=8 d20+10=13 d20+7=20 d20+6=8 d20+5=6 d20+4=15 d20+3=18 d20+8=13 (Beat a 25!)
Outside, all see the girl struggling with the beetles along with Gordo. All also see the mask to flying inside.
Meanwhile, a ghost-like figure appears in the broken window and talking to everyone outside and inside yells in a loud, but cute, voice, "Wardd has provided us a great premise for tonight's entertainment! So tonight's scheduled "Brawl For The Fun of It", brought to you, sponsored and repairs paid for by the "Ye Old Magic Shop" is a "Get the Mask contest!
"Get the mask and bring it to Lucky and you win the 200gp! Remember! No weapons! No spells that do damage! All damage is subdual! And, of course, no hitting the pretty waitress ghost...namely me! Good luck patrons! Enjoy and begin!"
Tionel d20+5=8 d20+4=24 d20+2=16 d20+2=3 d20+2=10 Friday January 10th, 2003 1:17:06 AM
(Er...does an 8 beat a 25? Bleh!) Tionel does his best to get the mask, but at the last moment someone steps on his hand, and then it's lost in a scurry of feet and a pile of people. Oh well, he thinks to himself. He charges at the lucky sod carrying the mask, attempting to grapple with him and/or anyone else who gets a hold of it. Problem is, he's usually not too good at this sorta thing.. but somehow, luck is with him, and he plows into the guy with a full-on tackle (Attack grapple roll of 24!). His next round, he attempts to grapple with him, trying to wrestle the mask out of his hands (Grapple check at 16!) Then, the next round (if it gets that far!) he will attempt to break free...(At this point, he probably gets bogged down by realizing he has no clue how to wrestle. Attempts at 3 and 10 :P )
Gordo d20+3=16 d20+3=13 d20+4=22 Friday January 10th, 2003 8:36:41 AM
The big man bursts out of the cloud of insects (taking more damage?) and seeing that everyone else is running for the inn across the street (Spot 16) he follows at high speed (Fast Movement, 40').
He is just in time to hear the ghost's challenge, and bursts into laughter as he runs towards the gathering melee. This sounds like his sort of scrap!
"Don't start without me!" he bellows joyfully, barrelling into anyone he sees who stands between him and the mask (Spot 13, Charge, Bull Rush 22).
Syr d20+5=10 Friday January 10th, 2003 1:33:18 PM
The elf stands outside the melee searching for his friends and any sign of the mask. (Spot 10)
Drew d20+5=13 Friday January 10th, 2003 1:57:34 PM
Hearing the ghost, Drew leaps into the mass of bodies searching for the mask (spot 13). Unable to spot the mask, he decides to help Tionel struggling with someone (aide another).
Turin Friday January 10th, 2003 4:37:41 PM
Turin finally sees the mask and the crowd, and works his best at pushing his way through around the beetles.
Bog Friday January 10th, 2003 7:51:43 PM
Bog smiles at the chaos in front of him he caused.
"Hmmmhmmhmmhmmhmmhmm. I miss dat."
Taking his leisurely time he trudges forward to the area in between the crashed-thru window and the swarm of insects.
"May dat be lesson to ya, lassie. F'in ya wanna git out den jist git out."
He pokes his head into the window, (hopefully not through the ghost) and mutters,
"D'inyone see some garsh thu 'ere?"

Looking through the window, Bog sees utter and absolute chaos as a sea of folk inside the Inn scramble for the mask. A chair sails overhead and crashes just inside the window in front of him. Turin makes his way into the Inn, spotting Syr nearby - looking for everyone else.
Right now, Syr can't see his friends, but he does see the two thieves sneaking in to join the 'melee'. No sign of Torl as yet.
Turin is almost pushed off his feet as the young girl, also clear of the beetles, runs inside.
Tionel scrambles for the mask and misses, instead he finds himself in a mass of bodies, fighting, punching and grabbing. It lessens slightly as Drew arrives to stand by his side. ((If Drew's 'aid another' attack roll beats AC10 - it gives Tionel a +2 bonus))
Gordo manages a rather spectacular entry into the fray, acting like a bowling ball through the crowd.
The mask dances from hand to hand, above everyone's heads - elusive but soooooo near to hand. Everyone makes an attempt to reach it. ((Again - highest reflex check gets it - highest other patron is DC22))
Someone makes a lunge for Tionel's feet, in an attempt to stop him from grabbing for the mask again, and tries to bite his ankles. ((Grapple check 24 ))
A tall, strapping young lad from the Trash Level also takes exception to Gordo barreling through everyone and tries to grab him in a head lock. ((Grapple check 28 ))
If you get caught in a grapple, you are unable to grab for the mask in this round.
Tionel d20+2=12 d20+2=7 Monday January 13th, 2003 3:05:17 PM
(Gee...was there any way I could get a grapple check of 24? hah!) Tionel's fumbling fingers almost manage to grasp it, but then someone grabs his ankle, and he trips falling to the floor. Someone bites, and he yelps most unmusically, kicking and struggling against the person. He tries to break away from the person, but flails ineffictively and bangs his head against a chair leg. (Grapple escape roll 7)
Turin d20+5=8 Monday January 13th, 2003 3:41:01 PM
Turin tries to push forwards to the mask, but it tumbles away from him. He curses quietly, and tries to do better.
Bog Monday January 13th, 2003 4:57:26 PM
Bog frowns and looks at the chair.
"Nooo. Dat warn't it."
He scratches his head as he sees two of his new companions fall on the floor.
"Awwwwwwww. Naow dat warn't ev'n nehborly eever."
He pushes up his sleeves and twiddles his fingers in a twiddly sort of way and utters, "Blathy gimble, slimy boar. Slipp'ry make it...all fall t'the floor!" [Grease on 10x by 10 area centered on the mask]
Gordo d20+5=11 d6+2=3 d20+6=13 d20+4=12 Monday January 13th, 2003 5:26:22 PM (OOC: PHB page 137: "You provoke an AoO from the target you are trying to grapple. If the AoO deals you damage, you fail to start the grapple.")
As the large lad reaches out to grab him Gordo aims a hooked kick towards the back of his knee (AC 11, 3HP subdual).
If the attack connects Gordo ducks as the fellow's lunge goes wide, and leaps as he sees the mask go sailing past (Reflex 13). Unfortunately he is far too slow.
If the big lad avoids his kick Gordo finds himself grabbed in a vice-like grip.
"Hey there son!" comes his muffled voice from somewhere in the big lad's armpit, somehow still sounding cheery. "I'd say it's long past your annual bath day!"
Syr d20+5=12 Tuesday January 14th, 2003 2:11:18 PM
The elf quickly hops on to the ledge of the bay window. Recognizing the two thieves, he strains his neck following them through the pile of bodies while searching for the mask. (Spot 12)
Reluctant to enter the fray he decides to guard one of the few ways out if anyone other than his friends emerges with the mask.
Drew d20+5=22 d20+5=8 Tuesday January 14th, 2003 2:18:34 PM
Drew sees the mask sliding around the pile of bodies and makes a stab for it. (Reflex 22) With a dive, he latches a hand on the mask only to discover someone else has it! Without much leverage he tries to wrestle the mask from the other (str check a big 8).
DM Jan Tuesday January 14th, 2003 11:30:58 PM
The pandemonium intensifies.
Tionel and Gordo seem resigned to a wrestling bout as their assailants keep their grip. However - all this changes as Bog's grease spell takes effect and all bets are off.
People slide all over the place. Drew thinks he has it, but once again, the mask slips out of the other person's hands, dancing out of reach. It's almost as if the thing has a mind of it's own.
Keeping his eye on the thieves, Syr sees them join the throng. He also spots someone who looks suspiciously like Torl heading up the stairs to the balcony.
Suddenly, everyone sees the girl leap up and grab the mask, which she hurls upward toward Torl.
It's in his hands in an instant, and he makes a break for one of the upper room doors.
Gordo d20+6=23 Wednesday January 15th, 2003 8:11:23 AM
Managing to keep his feet despite the treacherous conditions (Reflex 23), Gordo slips and out of the area of the Grease (half move speed), and races up the stairs after Torl (Fast Movement 40').
"I see you son!" he calls out, "And I'm hot on your heels!"
Bog Wednesday January 15th, 2003 12:03:11 PM
Bog hmmms again and saunters around the side of the building. Trying to judge where exactly those stairs lead he does his best to monitor the two sides of the building where people might escape from and passes around as need be when he hears other things.
Syr Wednesday January 15th, 2003 2:00:07 PM
Syr hops down from the ledge and moves around the outside of the building. Seeing Bog he yells, "Hey pigpen!" With a smile and a wink he tries to show Bog he is only teasing. "You go around the left and I'll take the right, shout if you see something? The guy who has the mask is named Torl."
Drew d20+5=18 Wednesday January 15th, 2003 2:08:21 PM
Drew sees the mask moving upward and yells, "Quickly everyone, last time we chased Torl upstairs, he eluded us. There will not be a second time!"
Picking his way through the slick area, he races up the stairs after Torl (40').
Turin d20+5=24 Wednesday January 15th, 2003 4:05:21 PM
Turin, having been outside the grease area, dances over a couple of sliding people, and rushes up the stairs after Torl, not caring who else is on the way. (running for a full movement of 120')
DM Jan Thursday January 16th, 2003 12:23:15 AM
As Torl runs toward a bedroom door on the upper landing, Gordo, Tionel and Drew charge upstairs, overtaken by the fleet feet of Turin. The two thieves aren't far behind.
At Gordo's cry - Torl turns, his lips twisting, about to give a retort. Thats when he runs smack bang into an old dwarf dressed in nothing but a towel, who's stepped outside the bedroom door to see what all the fuss is about.
Things seem to run in slow motion, as the mask is dropped, and it bounces and skids along the floor toward Turin, Gordo and Drew.
((Trying to catch it? Reflex DC 8 for Turin, DC 11 for Gordo and Drew))
Meanwhile, Syr and Bog's reconaissance reveals no particular escape route from the upstairs room Torl was heading for.
Tionel d20+5=24 Thursday January 16th, 2003 1:56:13 AM
Tionel manages to actually stand amidst the incredible grease. He somehow skidders, rolls, and slides with the grace of an athlete over the bodies over to the edge of the spell. Combing his slicked hair back, he has a burst of inspiration and quickly hums a tune, attempting to charm the woman who's been helping Torl with a quick cantrip. (DC 14 to resist)
Syr Thursday January 16th, 2003 5:48:02 AM
The elf looks around in frustration. With a yell he catches Bog's attention, "HEY! No way out... let's get back inside to see what's going on?"
Gordo d20+6=20 d20+3=17 Thursday January 16th, 2003 8:59:56 AM
Gordo reaches down and neatly snatches up the mask (Reflex 20). "My ball!" he cries with a grin. Quick as a flash he stuffs the mask into his knapsack and looks for Lucky (Spot 17). He means to win this little game!
"Drew! Turin! Run interference for me! Block off any attacks if you can, and I'll see this thing got to Lucky over there! Get the others to do the same! Once we're all together we stand a better chance of holding on to it!"
He sets off at a run (Fast Movement, 40'), weaving and bobbing as he goes.
Turin d20+5=25 d20=10 d20=1 d20+5=7 Thursday January 16th, 2003 3:49:10 PM
Turin grabs the mask easily, and ducks back down the stairs, and he goes down, he fakes handing it off to both Gordo and Drew (10 on the bluff check, accidentally hit it twice), and then hides it on his person, doing his best to fade into the crowd (hide check of 7)
Drew d20+10=28 Thursday January 16th, 2003 4:24:09 PM
Unsure of who actually has the mask, but knowing that it is one of his friends, the big half-orc decides to clear a path to Syr and Bog. Moving quickly to the door, Drew uses his strength and size to plow through anyone in his way. (overrun/trip attack 28)
Bog Thursday January 16th, 2003 11:10:06 PM
Bog shouts back to Syr, "S'no bothur. 'v bin called wors'n dat b'fore. Bog's wot dey uswally say."
He hurries after the other elf which still isn't very fast, as they head for the front door.
DM Jan Friday January 17th, 2003 1:44:22 AM
Syr runs back to the front, followed by Bog, hurrying to keep up.
Inside, despite all the mayhem - the group has managed to get their hands on the mask. Drew brushes aside the two thieves, as only a half orc can, while Turin and Gordo head back downstairs as fast as their legs can carry them.
Torl is looking on with horror, but he's blocked from following by a rather irate dwarf who's demanding to know why he was interrupted in the middle of braiding his beard.
The girl has her beady eyes on Turin and is trying to follow him through the crowd. She is distracted however, by the sound of a tune, and she glances toward Tionel.
Back on the ground floor - the crowd appears to be a little confused as to what has happened. Some think its upstairs, some think it's down.
Gordo d20=20 d20+5=20 Friday January 17th, 2003 8:48:30 AM
Sticking near to Turin Gordo pretends he has the mask (Bluff nat 20!). "Stay close, friends! Don't let them get near me!" he bellows, stuffing the non-existent mask in his pack.
He makes himself as big a target as possible, hoping to attract any intercepting attack towards himself, allowing Turin to reach Happy guarded by Drew and the others.
But he ensures that he keeps close enough to Turin to offer his help if the ruse is seen through (Aid Another, AC 20: +2 to Turin's AC if he is attacked).
Turin Friday January 17th, 2003 11:06:30 AM
Turin follows behind Drew, and keeps the mask well hidden as he moves quickly.
Syr Friday January 17th, 2003 3:31:49 PM
Syr's eyes glaze over for a moment as he tries to understand his new friend. Shaking his head, he moves to the entrance only to see his friends bulling their way out of the inn, "Bog, it's time to make use of that tip you gave the coach. Looks like it's time to leave!"
Believing Gordo has the mask, he runs interference with the crowd for him.
Drew Friday January 17th, 2003 3:32:47 PM
Drew continues charging outside trusting the others to follow. Once outside, he makes his way towards the carriage.
Tionel d20+2=5 d20+7=15 d20+4=12 d20+2=3 Friday January 17th, 2003 10:02:11 PM
Tionel attempts to see where the mask is and has no clue. (5) Tionel whistles at the girl and motions for her to come to him...He asks her, "Wouldn't you rather just give up on the whole mask and join me for a drink?" He puts on his best air (Diplomacy 15) and smiles charmingly at her. When Torl finally finishes with the dwarf, seeing as the guy will probably furiously charging after Gordo and the others, he quickly moves through the crowd and tries to 'accidentally' stumble hard into their opponent (Really a bull rush, Bluff 12), attempting to push him into the grease-filled area. But knowing his luck, he probably just bounces off the human bullet that is Torl (Blech...3).
Bog Saturday January 18th, 2003 2:34:55 AM
Bog Stands still scratching the fuzz on his chin and hmmms for a moment at Syr's words of wisdom. "Ygyotcha!" he calls back and separates himself from Syr's trail and doubles back to the coach.
"Hye, friend!" he yells to the coachman, "Winny say ngo. you ngo fest!"
He tosses up another silver piece and crawls inside the coach, leaving the door wide open behind him. He pops the bridge of his long nose over the edge of the window and peers out anxiously at the throng that throbs and pulses within the inn.
Fire! [DM Jerry] Saturday January 18th, 2003 6:04:52 AM
Suddenly as if in slow motion, Happy screams and begins running towards the greased area!
Noooo! AHhhhhhhh! NOoooo!
The dwarf with the towel meets up with the braided dwarf near the bottom of the stairs. Looking at each other in confusion they scream at each other trying to hear what the other is saying. Realizing the noise is great, they shrug, grin, put a table and bench up on their legs snd sit down. Both pull out a long pipe shaped like a dragon breathing. Both light their pipe.
"BOOOOOOOMMMMMM!"
[Glad to be back! Can you tell?]
Gordo Monday January 20th, 2003 3:55:06 PM
Unsure what is going on behind him, Gordo continues his dash for the gettaway vehicle.
Anthony as Drew Tuesday January 21st, 2003 1:25:39 AM
Drew continues to make his wat to the carrage. While looking to see who has the mask and that they are ahead of him and safe.
Syr Tuesday January 21st, 2003 1:33:37 AM
Syr's head whips around at the explosion to see his friends emerging from the building. Waving both his hands he gets their attention and leads them to the carriage.
Bog Tuesday January 21st, 2003 2:31:57 PM
Bog peers from over the carriage's windowledge. His widened eyes make room for his nose which slips back inside to safety.
"Git raady..." he mutters and waves an arm at the others.
Turin Tuesday January 21st, 2003 3:36:14 PM
Turin just runs. Whatever that sound is, it can't be good.
Scene 4: Torl's Doom
Turin Wins! [DM Jerry] Tuesday January 21st, 2003 4:25:06 PM
The entire place lights up as the dwarves are suddenly lit up head to toe with fire. Lucky is calling for water one minute and then for everyone to evacuate a second later as he realizes it's too late.
Daphne takes Turin's hand as he leaves shouting, "The winner!....I think."
The party races outside and into the wagon. The ratwoman immediately gets the carriage racing at full speed heading for the upramp.
Diving out the window and quickly stealing a wagon nearby, Torl and his gang begin to give chase!
Behind them, two thieves on horseback race after Torl's wagon.
Tionel Wednesday January 22nd, 2003 1:24:04 AM
Having just barely jumped onto the stoop of the carriage and grabbed the door before it took off, Tionel grins and waves his fist at Torl's gang on their wagon, playfully calling to them. "HAH! You'll never catch us, you troll-kissing warty filthy whore-mongering worm eating dung-filled scathy vagabondish warthog blistering blue barnacled bull-headed brine-covered snake sheathing prissy porkchop rotten greedy backstabbing slug-nosed cowardous typically idiotic creeps! You'll catch us when a monkey-faced bandit marries the queen of faeries! Rats on the waterfront have to hide when you come, for the stench of your putrid sewer-washed flesh causes even the cockroaches to..." Tionel continues on merrily, using many colorful vexations that hopefully cause crowds of drunks to cheer in amusement.
Syr d20+5=7 Wednesday January 22nd, 2003 2:00:01 AM
Syr takes advantage of being the first one to the carriage and moves through it to the other door. Climbing up to join the driver, he tries to help with the team (Aid another dex check 7). Rather than helping, he seems to be getting in the driver's way. Exasperated, he ceases his efforts and just hangs on for the ride. Calling back to the others he asks, "I assume we have the mask? and more importantly, What did Turin win?"
Without waiting for an answer he yells back, "Gordo! Any ideas where we can go to make a stand?"
Gordo Wednesday January 22nd, 2003 8:51:37 AM
"Yeeee-HAAAA!!" yells Gordo as the carriage rattles along at breakneck speed. He clings to the side, peering back at their pursuers. He grins at Tionel's colourful tirade (though he hopes no littleuns overhear his more choice epithets), then turns to Syr as he asks where best to go.
"w-w-well, son" he shouts over the clatter of cartwheels over cobbles, "When in doubt call in the Law, that's what I say. I reckon we head straight over to the nearest guardhouse and inform them we have rescued this stolen mask from a desperate gang, and wish to see it restored to its rightful owner. And, while we're at it, we want to see that self same gang (who pursue us even as we speak) placed behind bars. I'm sure they'd be interested to speak to our friend Torl again, after his recent escapades! Once that's all taken care of, we can talk to the owner of Dartt's Used Maskshop about buying the thing back fair and square, and taking it to our client. Never profit by another's misfortune, as my old mam used to say."
He looks around to check where they are. They seem to be heading for the upramp.
"I say we head for the Barracks Level, and the nearest guardhouse!"
Drew Wednesday January 22nd, 2003 9:11:06 AM
Drew seeing the other carrage chassing them leans out of the carrage and waits till they go through a tight passage with many people and then throws a huge handful of silver out into the street screaming "Free Silver!!!" Tossing it out into the street behind them hoping to cause a roadblock that the other carrage to get through.
50 silver
Turin Wednesday January 22nd, 2003 5:11:01 PM
Turin shakes his head. "You heard the story of this mask. Keep the mask out of it, just tell them these guys are chasing us."
Bog Thursday January 23rd, 2003 4:26:26 AM
Bog stands up in the rumbling cart and begins pounding on the ceiling toward the front.
"Yoo cull this fahst?? Git a move-on missy'r you'll haf mer trubble'n dat'f dose broxyers 'f kichop ta yoo!"
He sits back down in his seat, almost pouting. "'nd dat war good sil'var too."
Crash! [DM Jerry] Thursday January 23rd, 2003 7:47:11 AM
Our favorite Rat-faced driver looks grinning back at Bog says, "Allright cutie! Ya got it!"
She hands the reigns to Syr and pulls two sugarcubes colored purple. "Watch this!"
She extends the sugar cubes to the horses on a forked stick with one cube stuck to each end.
The horses, evidently used to this tactic, each turn their head to eat the sweet with relish.
All of a sudden, each of them doubles their speed!!!
Tearing through the town the party goes on a wagon totally not meant to travel this fast!
It shakes!
It shimmies!
It....What's that cart doing there?
The cart is destroyed as the wagon tears through it. A scream is heard as a smallish human is thrown in the air over the wagon!
Holy Lem! I hope someone can catch her!
[This is Aleyna's (and Tiree's) re-entrance into the game folks. Welcome her back.....oh and save her please!]
Behind, Torl and the gang sends people scattering right and left.
Looking out to the side, you see the sun coming up. Almost immediately you hear the sound of trumpets! Dawn has come and the trumpets announce the start of the Mask Procession. However will our heroes get the mask to Lady Firiona in time now?!!!!
Gordo d20+3=13 Thursday January 23rd, 2003 8:39:43 AM
"Look out for that-" begins Gordo, but too late. There is an almighty crash. As bits of wagon fly through the air he sees a small figure come sailing towards him. "Go limp, lass!" he yells, as he makes a grab for her (Dex 13).
Drew Thursday January 23rd, 2003 8:59:17 AM
Drew keeps his silver and ruses out the door and looks about fo the scream and then rushes to her aid if need be.
Gordo d20+3=13 Thursday January 23rd, 2003 9:03:01 AM
"Look out for that-" begins Gordo, but too late. There is an almighty crash. As bits of wagon fly through the air he sees a small figure come sailing towards him. "Go limp, lass!" he yells, as he makes a grab for her (Dex 13).
He looks up desperately towards the Gold Level, as the sun rises. So near and yet so far; he had no idea that dawn was so close! All they need to do is get to the Gold Level and show the ring hanging from the necklace about his neck to a guard up there and they will be escorted at once to the Lady Firiona.
"To the Gold Level!" he yells to the driver. As quick as you can!"
"Any of you folks back there have any spells you can use to slow those wronguns down?"
Tiree True d20+11=25 Thursday January 23rd, 2003 11:49:56 AM
"Aaaayyiieeeee!!!!"
Thrown into the air, a scream tears itself from the girl's throat. Moving too fast to tell where she is going, does the best she can to keep herself from getting hurt and from landing heavily on anyone else (Tumble 25).
"Look out below!"
Bog Thursday January 23rd, 2003 4:25:50 PM
Bog straightens up in surprise at the rat-woman's response. His face turns from crusted mud brown to crusted mud brown highlighted with a pale red.
"Shucks, missy," he says brushing back his hair and leaning forward, "say, yoo wanna goo anwar per aaftor dis?"
He looks back over his shoulder at Gordo, "Shhhhh, ahm bizzy wit dis heer wat."
Syr d20+5=16 Friday January 24th, 2003 3:04:51 AM
Syr holds tightly to the reins as the rat-woman causes chaos in the streets with her sugar. The carriage careens wildly when he takes a hand off the reins to straighten his tiger mask. As the body flies up and over, he thinks for a second that he should know that person. Before he can figure out where, he turns his attention to steering (Handle Animal 16).
Shouting back, "Are you SURE that the best place for the mask is the authorities? Given it's history does anyone really own it?"
(HEY! Welcome back Aleyna!)
Drew Friday January 24th, 2003 10:28:19 AM
Drew rushes out to check on Tiree...
Tionel d20+1=5 Friday January 24th, 2003 4:29:00 PM
"Let's not go back to the authorities! We gotta get to the lady on the upper level! Quick! Full speed ahead!" The usually nimble elf then attempts to climb up to the front of the carriage, but nearly loses his grip and barely hangs on by the door...
To the Aid of The Lady! [DM Jerry] Friday January 24th, 2003 9:15:18 PM
As the party reaches Gold Level, they near the parade. Careening toward it in their wagon moving at incredible speed. they pass the crowd on either side who shout in alarm. You can just make out the Overlord in the distance, a look of surprise on his face at the renegade wagon coming his way out of control.
It is then that you hear a high pitched female voice in the crowd and a hanky waving in the air.
"Yahooooooo..." The sing song voice breaks through the crowd noise, "Overrrrr Heeeereya!"
There she is!
If only you can get to her before the Overlord reaches her place in the parade.
Turin Saturday January 25th, 2003 12:36:19 AM
Turin hands the mask out to someone who can possibly throw it or hand it to the lady.
Gordo Saturday January 25th, 2003 11:49:03 AM
"EVERYONE OUT OF THE WAY!" Roars Gordo at the crowd as they come racing on. "Driver, aim for that waving hanky, and try not to flatten the owner!"
He clings on to the side of the carriage, trying to keep Lady F in sight through the eyeslits of his mask.
Tionel d20+3=16 Saturday January 25th, 2003 2:48:50 PM
Tionel manages to pull himself back into the doorway of the carriage, barely. Hearing Gordo's roar, Tionel laughs. "Double-time it, my fair carriage-lady!" He looks to make sure the other carriage isn't too close, and if they are, will toss something at them...probably a boot. (16 to hit! Yay!)
Drew d20+10=26 d20+11=27 d20+5=19 Monday January 27th, 2003 9:29:47 AM
Drew yells "Quick, give me the mask, I can make it to her!" Then once getting the mask he weaves his way through the crowd using all his skills where needed. Growling where it will do the most good, weaving and bobbing where that wont work and then where nothing else will work he simnply shoulders his way through.

Tiree Monday January 27th, 2003 10:51:08 AM
Not sure exactly what has happened to her, Tiree sits where she landed (?) and tries to take everything in.
Syr d20+7=21 d20+11=21 Monday January 27th, 2003 1:53:15 PM
The elf notices Tiree's confusion and takes a moment to excitedly fill her in, "BoyIsurehave missedyou!" He gives her a quick hug, "Basically, Drew has the Mask of Illgilon. The mask is magic and prevents the person wearing it from being chosen on Mask Day. We have been matched against a punk named Torl to return it to Lady Firiona. That's the Lady Drew is taking it to." With a final smile, "I gotta go help the big guy, bye!"
With that he leaps into the fray following the half-orc. (Jump 21, Tumble 21)
I need some help here! [DM Jerry] Monday January 27th, 2003 11:33:58 PM
Turin looks to hand off the mask. Gordo warns the crowd.
Drew takes the mask and dives off the side of the wagon. [Tumble or Reflex save of 18 to immediately come to your feet.]
Tiree having landed on top of the wagon must hold on for dear life as it careens towards the Overlord and his retinue!
Syr jumps off to help Drew. [Tumble or Reflex save of 18 to immediately come to your feet.]
The Ratwoman tries to bring the carriage to a stop. "I'm gonna crash it. Don't worry Overlord sir! I'm not like an assassin or anything!
"Oops I shouldn't have said that."
She pulls hard on the reigns, but her speed induced horses continue on!
"I need some help here!"
The rich lady in horror screams, "They are going to crash into the Overlord!"
Suddenly dozens of archers surrounding the Overlord in the procession draw their bows. Soldiers quickly begin to pull the Overlord to the side.
Gordo d20+3=19 d20+2=15 Tuesday January 28th, 2003 5:16:03 AM
Despite knowing next to nothing about horses, Gordo's seen enough to know how to stop them.
Clambering round to the front of the carriage (Dex 19) he sits down next to ratwoman and bellows "WOOOAAAHH HORSIES!", tugging wildly on the reigns (Str 15).
"Was that right?" he asks of ratwoman, as the Overlord and his deadly guard of elite archers grow ever closer.
Drew d20+11=23 Tuesday January 28th, 2003 9:15:12 AM
Drew tummbles up from the ground with the mask and keeps moving, looking back he sees the horses so he casts "Command" on one of the horses. "STOP!" He commands, and then without watching to see if works he continues on toward the lady.
Save DC (14 - 18 depending on how reasonable the request is.)
OOC: Im confused I thought our wagon fell to pieces, I allready thought we were on the ground.
Tiree d20=12 d20+13=33 Tuesday January 28th, 2003 10:13:16 AM
Tiree holds on for dear life (Str 12, Balance 33, nat 20) on top of the carriage. She can hear voices inside that she recognizes and some she can't. She then sees Drew jump out and start running, something in his hand.
Able to do nothing for anyone other than herself, Tiree watches in horrified suspence to the going ons around her.
Syr d20+5=22 d20+4=12 Tuesday January 28th, 2003 2:48:47 PM
Syr rolls as he lands and pops right up (Reflex 22). The elf doesn't slow as Drew pauses and plows into the tangle of bodies ahead of the half-orc trying to force a path through for him to follow (str 12).
Bog Tuesday January 28th, 2003 3:43:17 PM
Bog looks in wonder at the girl that just dropped in, then looks up at the sky hoping for more. When no more arrive, he leans down to the frightened Tiree and mutters, "Soooo war yoo frum?"
He is jostled again by the reminder that he is in a speeding vehicle. He turns around and waves his hands about and claps, "Outta nuthin' cum raat here. Fly up dere 'n try to steer!"
[Cast Unseen servant, directing it to move forward and pull the horses's reins hard to the left trying to make them go right. (It grabs the reins about halfway between the horses and the ratwoman)]
Turin Tuesday January 28th, 2003 5:02:33 PM
Turin rolls down and finds a good place to brace himself.
"Woah!" [DM Jerry] Tuesday January 28th, 2003 8:17:14 PM
Between Gordo's efforts, and Bog's Unseen Sevant, the horses begin to skid to a stop. [Everyone on board make a Reflex Save of 15 to not take 1d6 damage from the wagon as it careens to a stop and literally falls apart around you.]
Drew and Syr push forward to the lady and reach her.
Suddenly from behind, a second wagon is heard. "Woah!"
Bodies fly out the windows into the crowd as their wagon flies into the remains of the ratwoman's wagon.
Syr sees his life pass in front of his eyes as a man he's pushing to the side is all of a sudden chosen by the Overlord's Crown to serve underneath. He as in a daze walks out into the street and towards the Overlord.
Tiree d20+8=15 Tuesday January 28th, 2003 11:06:59 PM
Tiree is barely able to keep from hurting herself as the carriage falls apart beneath her (Reflex 15).
She moves around checking on the others from the carriage underneath her to see if they're hurt. Not knowing that the ones that come crashing in are the "bad guys" she checks on them as well.
Tionel d20+5=20 Wednesday January 29th, 2003 2:09:43 AM
Tionel screeches (very much like a girl) as the carriage rocks back and forth. He manages to grab onto the doorknob and hold onto it, his soft slippers not giving him much purchase on the ground.
Gordo d20+6=12 d6=2 Wednesday January 29th, 2003 6:39:13 AM
Gordo is taken by complete surprise by the sudden halt of the carriage, and goes sailing over the top of the two horses. Luckily he lands on his head (2HP).
Staggering to his feet he sees the second carriage arriving, and moves to intercept anyone trying to pursue Drew and Syr. "No way through here, boys." he says. "The contest is over."
Drew Wednesday January 29th, 2003 9:03:00 AM
Drew upon recognizing the woman hands the mask over to her.
Turin d20+5=14 d6=6 Wednesday January 29th, 2003 12:53:10 PM
Turin gets thrown much like a cannonball into the crowd, and, dazed, figures on the ground is a good place to stay for now.
Syr d20+9=27 Wednesday January 29th, 2003 2:47:20 PM
The elf stands stunned for a moment as the man is chosen right beside him. As he stands gaping the thought of leaving his friends crosses his mind and he mumbles, "no, tiree just came back...." Realizing his situation, he checks his tiger mask and then tries to blend in with the crowd (hide 27). He then watches as Drew hands over the mask. Quietly he whispers to her, "Milady, you mentioned something about a reward...?"
Bog (Down 5 hp) d20+3=9 d6=5 Wednesday January 29th, 2003 3:52:10 PM
Bog smiles a crackly smile as he turns around to the lady.
"Y'see? Thotwarn't nuttin. Naw...war war we?"
As Bog turns around he realizes to his dismay that the lady is no longer there. In fact, the seats, floor, ceiling, and walls have gone. Strangely all he does see is a crowd of people some 10 feet below him and a cart racing through an area with 4 wagon wheels and the former walls of their carriage. He ponders this strange turn of events as he continues sailing through the air and then lands on a man carrying a goat.
"Thank ye sir fir breckin' my fall. Aaaaaaow!"
Mission Accomplished? [DM Jerry] Wednesday January 29th, 2003 11:22:46 PM
Drew gives Lady Firiona the mask and she quickly dons it, losing the one she was wearing. Soldiers rush forward clearing the wagons from the road and pulling all those in the street from both wagons to the side and begin asking them questions.
Then from nowhere, from above someone grabs the mask. Turning visible and floating above, Torl laughs in triumph, putting on the mask.
Suddenly a shaft of light, like lightning, shoots from the crown of the Overlord and streaks up into the sky hitting the Mask of Illgilon.
Torl screams, "NOOOOOOOOO!"
Slowly and surely, Torl and the mask are drawn into the group beside the Overlord who have been chosen.
Like a marionette, he walks behind the Overlord as he proceeds down the street.
Unmasked, Lady Firiona faints from shock.
Syr d20+7=14 Thursday January 30th, 2003 1:30:28 AM
Seeing Lady Fionna wilt, Syr moves to catch her (Reflex 14). Looking over at Drew he asks, "I thought the mask was supposed to prevent one from being chosen?"
Tionel Thursday January 30th, 2003 2:55:36 AM
Tionel laughs at the whole thing...He laughs and laughs, and claps Syr on the back. "That's what she thought, too... I guess the mythical mask is a bit different than we thought it'd be! I just wonder if we'll still get paid... Say, you okay there, Gordo? You hit those flagstones pretty hard..."
Gordo d20+3=20 Thursday January 30th, 2003 7:23:05 AM
"Nothing to worry about, lad" laughs Gordo back at Tionel, rubbing his head. "You'd need a sledgehammer to crack this nut!"
He too is highly amused (if slightly confused) at the irony of this turn of events. But he's never been one for losing sleep over things he doesn't understand. "He places Lady F's discarded mask back on her face, and kneels at her side attempting to bring her round (Heal 20).
"Come on there lass, time to wake up. Looks like everything worked out for the best, eh?" he says still chuckling, part of him glad that Torl has finally got his come-uppance, part of him feeling sorry for the boy.
Drew d20+6=15 Thursday January 30th, 2003 9:14:16 AM
Drew suddenly concerned kneels and fans the lady checking her pulse and tempature. (Heal Check 15) Then looking at Syr "Superstisions all of it. I would warrent that appearing from being invisable above everyones head and placing a mask on your face while laughing maniacaly would draw much attention to you."
Tiree Thursday January 30th, 2003 10:37:16 AM
After taking care of the people around her, Tiree makes her way toward Drew and Syr. Looking at her two brothers, she tries for a flippant tone. "So what's been going on? Did you miss me?"
Turin Thursday January 30th, 2003 1:26:16 PM
Turin sort of sits there, dazed, watching what he can through the crowd.
Bog Thursday January 30th, 2003 7:10:54 PM
Bog gets up and rubs his backside. Making his way through the crowd, he returns to the company of his traveling companions.
"Sssssay thar, frends. Whazit all dese here actin so fonny? All Zombish and such.", he says pointing at Torl.
::SMOOOOOCH::! [DM Jerry] Thursday January 30th, 2003 7:55:50 PM
Lady Firiona comes to quickly and thanks the party by kissind Drew full on the lips in exuberance.
::SMOOOOOCH::
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"
"My heroes!"
"Hey girls! Meet my new friends and heroes!
They are orphans! How cool is that!"
Soon the party is surrounded by fat rich women hugging them and pinching their cheeks and kissing them and thanking them and squeezing coins in their pockets as they pat your heads and run their fingers through your hair.
Syr Friday January 31st, 2003 3:12:56 AM
Amid the hugging and pinching the elf makes time to address Tiree, "Miss you? What's your name again? I think I know you from somewhere?" Grinning like an idiot, he spares a hug for the girl.
"Let's see, what's new? Well, appearantly our neighbor upstairs just decided to join the ranks of the overlord. Can I stake a claim on his now vacant bedroom? Anyway, we've been playing tag with him for a while." Syr shrugs nonchalantly.
Nudging the half-orc, "Drew here, has become fond of making speeches and I think he's finally coming out of his shell."
Nodding to the big man, "You probably recall Gordo from when he helped out the orphanage years ago. For an OLD guy, he's okay."
"The laughing elf is Tionel, decent set of pipes that one and more importantly, he seems to know the songs that Mother Flauset wouldn't let us hear." He grins and winks at Tiree.
Shaking Turin's shoulder's "Turin, you okay there?"
Wrinkling his nose, "Lastly, our newest friend is 'Bog'?" Turning to Bog, "What kinda name is that, a nickname or birthname? Anyway, he's probably the reason we don't want to take a coach back. No one wants to sit next to him." Clapping his arm across Bog's back, he tries to show he means nothing by his comments.
Drew Friday January 31st, 2003 10:44:00 AM
As soon as Tiree speaks Drews eyes fly open and he whirls around "Tiree!!" He screams and then leaps to his feet dumping the poor lady ontt Syr and hugging poor Tiree in his crusshing arms and laughing then just as suddenly he screams out "Firiona!!!" and drops Tiree and cradles the l;ady again tring to discover if she is all right as she comes too and kisses him Drew turns a violent shade of embarressed purple. The more pincing and cuddling that is bestowed upon the half orc the purpler his face becomes. Mostly he stands and takes it all the while holding his tounge and staring at the ground.
Tionel Friday January 31st, 2003 1:43:24 PM
Unlike the others, Tionel actually enjoys being kissed and stuffed with money by fat rich women, so he returns the favors with many bows, gracious and charming smiles, and kisses on the cheeks of his own. "Thank you, my beautiful, kind ladies. We try to do our best." Having no clue what exactly he's talking about (but at least it sounds polite and nice), he blabs on like that to the women.
Turin Friday January 31st, 2003 5:34:51 PM
Turin, having finally got to his feet, says, "Uhhh, yeah. I think. Was that Torl that went off with the Overlord?"
