Nonam  d20-3=0 d20-3=12
Thursday November 14th, 2002 8:51:05 AM

Nonam wonders a bit about the river of blood.

[Well, Nonam gets a 0 for his will save. And a spent hero point gets it up to 12]

Tericus  d20+13=32
Thursday November 14th, 2002 8:51:45 AM

(will save of 32)"Stay close together." Tericus tells everyone. "If we get seperated, I doubt that we'll be able to find each other."

John  d20=5 d20=5
Thursday November 14th, 2002 9:46:55 AM

Like Nonam, Jus wonders about the comment of Blood. There is only one place that he's aware of where blood can be a problem -- and it sends and involuntary shiver down his spine. (will save of 5; hero save of 5)

Jus follows the group in, glad that the stranger joined them. "So... what should we call you?" Jus asks the man.

Clangden  d20+13=27 d20+9=10 d20+9=18
Thursday November 14th, 2002 10:59:33 AM

(will save dc27 )

not sure what to think about mr. dippy, Clangden does listen to his instructions and abides by them. assuming there is a path nearby, Clangden assumes the head position, knowing the stranger will pull point.

(spot check dc1, hero point reroll dc18 )

looking around for the Overlord, and anything that might present itself to us as danger, Clangden does his S.O.P.

(s.o.p. standard operating procedure ie.. senses on full alert, shield up, axe ready )

(ooc Jan, shouldnīt we get the Hero Point awards from the last adventure before we get too far in this one? )

Addinein  d20+7=26
Friday November 15th, 2002 12:53:22 AM

Following the others into the mist, Addinein hears the other man's words echoing in his head.

(Will save 26)

DM Jan
Friday November 15th, 2002 1:18:33 AM

((Early next week Tim, I promise))

Things become clear as soon as the Gargul cleric closes the portal. The mists drift away leaving an alien landscape which none of you have seen before.
Black upon black, grey upon grey, shadow upon shadow. There are no trees, no particular landmarks. The ground undulates slightly, but its mostly flat. It appears to go on, and on, and on. It's utterly monochromatic but for one exception - for at ground level are small streams that glow bright red.
The red looks like blood, as thick as broth, and all the streams seem to be flowing in one direction, connecting in the far distance, growing into rivers with a more powerful flow.
These streams and rivers are the main light source, offering the equivalent of twilight.

Above, is what looks like a night sky, without the usual cloud, moons, and stars. Instead, every once in a while a pinpoint of brilliant light shoots high overhead, heading in the opposite direction to the blood flow.

"My name is Torel," says the big man as Jus asks. He continues, his voice deep, and certainly loud enough for everyone to hear.

"We are now in a place that exists between the Living Wold and the Isles of the Dead. This is the Shadowlands, where our dead souls must pass, carried by the streams of Woldsbl - Gargul's eye!! Is this a trap?"

Okay -
Apart from the strange landscape, two things become immediately obvious. Both are potentially and equally life threatening.

1) All that whispering inside Nonam's mind, is now in the mind of everyone, seeping into every nook and cranny, seductive, powerful, calling you to the streams of blood - "come, sleep, this is your demise, sleep, rest here..... time to die."
It is relentless. It never stops.
Some of you are able to control it, push it aside. Others of you will find it difficult to varying degrees - it will become hard to concentrate an anything other than that voice in your head. For some, it will eventually mean temporary insanity that only a visit to a Gargul temple will cure.

Use the one off Will Saves you just made to adjust your stats by the following:

Will Saves 25 and below: -2 Will Saves, -1 Concentration checks, No Wisdom loss.
Will Saves 15 and below: -4 Will Saves, -2 Concentration checks, 1 Wisdom ability score point loss every 10 hours.
Will Saves 5 and below: -6 Will Saves, -3 Concentration checks, 2 Wisdom ability score points loss every 10 hours.

The lower your Wisdom, the more insane you become. In role play terms, each character may choose what form that will take - denial, fear/horrified, unhinged, delusions, depression, hallucinations, whatever.
If your Wisdom score reaches 0 - you fall into a deep, comatose sleep full of nightmares.

Also - last but not least -

2) All around and shuffling toward you is a large group ( maybe 200 or more) of undead - ghouls, zombies and some skeletal forms in rotting robes. Their intent is obvious - some of their arms are outstretched, some are moaning horribly. The first of them are only 50 feet away.

One of them trips over something on the ground. It looks like a peacock feather mask...

Your initiative, gentlemen.

Tericus  d20+2=21 2d6(4+6)+15=25
Friday November 15th, 2002 9:03:27 AM

not affected in the least by the voices in his head, Tericus moves ahead of everyone and holds his symbol of Alemi in front of him. "BEGONE, CREATURES OF EVIL!!" Tericus yells as he attempts to turn the undead creatures(highest level undead affected is 16hit dice, can turn a total of 25 hit dice, effects the closests ones first, if they are 6hit dice or less they are destroyed instead of turned)

Nonam  10d6(5+5+4+6+3+6+6+5+1+5)=46
Friday November 15th, 2002 9:51:08 AM

Nonam takes out his wand of lightning and cuts a swath through the center of the undead.

Once the spell goes off, Nonam gives a big roar, "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Something like a tiger.

[46dmg, reflex for 1/2 DC20]
[well Nonam's going to be insane pretty fast]

Clangden
Friday November 15th, 2002 11:24:11 AM

watching his partners turn to combat, Clangden looks at Torel and says: if this is the land of the dead, then we can stand here all day battling them and not run out of the enemy. You are the expert here, do we stand and fight or do we move forward, and hope to lay some ground between us and them (pointing to the mob).
seeing the peacock mask Clangden exclaims: that there is the mask the Overlord wore for sure, she has definately been brought here. (i know, it's obvious, but someone had to be the blonde)

Clangden, awaiting Torel's instructions, positions himself between the casters and the mob of undead, waiting for them to get within his killing grounds.

"We don't have time to kill them all - try and forge a path ahead! We can easily out pace them. But we must keep our eyes open for the girl. Gargul's mercy they haven't taken her already! Follow the flow - and watch your feet - don't step in any of those streams!"

All around are ghouls, armed skeletons and mohrgs with ready fists.
The might of Alemi, powering through Tericus causes devastation immediately around him. 12 ghouls explode in a rather messy manner, and Nonam's lightning arcs from creature to creature, frying 2 skeletons with bows and injuring 2 ghouls.

The stench of death is horrible and overpowering.
All save DC14 Fortitude or start throwing up - this means a -2 penalty to attacks, saves and skill checks for 2 rounds.

Most of the creatures are either too clumsy or too ineffectual to do much damage to a polished fighting unit. Clangden is able to effectively block attacks to Nonam and Tericus. However -
there are creatures closing in on some of the others. Two morghs approach Jus and Addinein. It's obvious some kind of formation is needed to get through unscathed.

A flurry of arrows also descend on the party.

Possible hits depending on current AC:

Gareth - AC 35,30,35 for 4,4,4 dam
Nonam - AC 23 for 8
Clangden - AC 35 for 7
Jus - AC 26,28 34 for 4,4,3
Tericus - AC 25, 30 for 7,8
Addinein - AC 28,32 for 4,3

"Then me make our break!" then Tericus moves towards the mask, calling on Alemi's power again to destroy the undead around them(highest hd of undead turned is 16, turn a total of 23 h.d., 6 h.d. or less are destroyed instead of turned. just to let you know jan i can turn undead times a day, this is my 2nd use, my shield has missle deflection also)

and then Clangden starts throwing up all over everything.

Jus is hit once by the vile creatures (3 hp). He backs away quickly, following Tericus and Clangden (and Clangden's path).

Jus doesn't attack the monsters, but spends his energy attempting to keep the creatures off Tericus. He does, however, keep careful monitor of where he steps. [25 concentration check].

Tuesday November 19th, 2002 11:12:39 AM

Once again, Tericus's blessed power of Alemi rips into the throng of clammering and clawing undead. 14 skeletons explode in multiple shards of bone, 4 ghouls drop to the ground in a mass of ooze. It enables the party to move forward quite a bit.
Similar scenes of destruction can be seen at the rear of the group as as Torel lets loose the wrath of Gargul.

The gloom ahead is lit by Nonam's lightning bolt which shoots forth and lights up some monstrous form that stands to its full height and howls in anger at being partially fried. This cry is joined by another high pitched shriek of some other creature that seems to be embedded in the big monster's chest. This huge half-skeletal, half-flesh thing is not alone. It has an identical brother right behind it. They loom in front of Nonam and Clangden with burning hate in their eyes.

Flanking Tericus, Jus and Addinein are similarly faced with something nasty. For fast moving skeletal forms approach, undeterred by Tericus and Torel. They have tongues like worms and look hideous.

This is my interpretation of your battle formation:

Clangden and Nonam are at the front.
Tericus is in the centre, flanked and protected by Jus and Addinein.
The rear is defended by Gareth and Torel.

The creatures attempt to get some payback.

Nonam gets swiped at by big uggy #1, twice.
It misses him - twice.

The second creature's little shrieker embedded in its chest attempts to cast CONFUSION on Clangden(Will DC 17 negates). The effect in this particular instance, is to make the dwarf attack the nearest creature to him -which happens to be the one trying to rip Nonam's head off.

Jus and Addinein face the quick-on-their-feet skeletons who lash out with their fists and those horrible tongues.
They miss - barely in some instances.

(I got such lame rolls!!!)

The peacock mask lies at everyone's feet, and it can be seen that if the two big monsters can be killed, there's a clear path at the front.

Then maneuvering about so that his spell can hit both the half skeleton-half flesh giant things while avoiding Clangden (which shouldn't be hard since the dwarf is shorter), Nonam casts prismatic spray. If any other nasties are about that he can hit without threatening the dwarf, he'll get them too.

Wednesday November 20th, 2002 11:30:46 PM

Battle continues.

At the rear, Torel manages to cut down 4 ghouls. Gareth does even better, cutting down an approaching morgh and 5 skeletons. The rear seems very well protected.

Jus casts Bulls Strength on Addinein - who is on his opposite flank, with Tericus well guarded in the middle.
The cleric sends out a blast of flame toward the first huge devourer (the other is hidden behind the first and therefore sheilded). Both it - and the tortured creature in its chest shriek in pain. It drops - cooked.
(Save failed)

Clangden moves to attack the second devourer, chopping away at the beast like he has a purpose. More shrieks are heard. The dwarf is also aware of Tericus's flame right behind him as hot dry air assaults his nostrils.

Then, Nonam's prismatic sphere spell goes off....

In order to miss Clangden, he's had to fire over the dwarf's head at the creature which means some of the spheres which might have hit other monsters, miss.
However - the result is a rather spectacular fry, sizzle and fry attack which - in addition to Clangden's axe bites - send the monster into a state of extreme deadness. It falls in a smouldering heap.

This leaves the morghs at the flanks to deal with, but their blows seem to have little relevence.

The path is now clear ahead to make a break for it. Behind the group are more skeletons, ghouls, morghs and bigger, shadowy creatures - all shambling your way - but they're slow.

"Lets move!" yells Torel, " and draw the horde away from this area. Then someone needs to come back and check for signs of the Overlord!"

Tericus
Thursday November 21st, 2002 9:00:27 AM

"Follow me!!" Tericus yells as he makes a break for the gap, running as fast as he can

Jus
Thursday November 21st, 2002 6:56:00 PM

Jus follows Tericus once again. Jus happily considers that it's pretty cool to see Tericus so outgoing -- a change from what Jus remembers the last time they were together.

"Be careful of the blood," Jus calls in warning as Tericus darts out.

Glancing around as he makes his way, Jus comments, "This is a really cool place! It's dark, foreboding, and somewhat terrifying; but one could get use to that."

Gareth
Friday November 22nd, 2002 12:49:10 AM

The warrior decides to take to the air. He attempts to get a better vantage point to spot the Overlord. I mean hey, not only is she powerful, she's beautiful too! :)

Clangden
Friday November 22nd, 2002 12:46:12 PM

stooping just enough to grab the peacock mask, Clangden makes a run for it, trying as hard as he can to keep up with the rest of the pack.

DM Jan
Friday November 22nd, 2002 8:54:34 PM

With Tericus at the fore, the group sets off away from the shambling mass of undead. Torel fends off any nasties that make a bid to follow.

"With a bit of luck, they'll start to disperse once they don't have our scent under their nostrils," growls the undead hunter, "and much as I'd like to stay and finish off every one of these abominations, thats not why we're here is it."

After a mad dash that puts about 100 yards between the group and the horde, Torel brings everyone to a halt.
"Before we go any further, is anyone suffering yet from the call of Woldsblood. It might seem nothing, but it can wear a man down eventually. Speak now - and the rest of us can watch out for you. There is no shame in this."

He waits till Gareth returns before saying anything else, and then -

"Woldsblood is pure magic. There are people in the Wold who can perform miracles with it, but it is also what carries the souls of the dead to their final resting place. That is it's purpose here in the Shadowlands. Do you hear it in your minds? It wants your soul. Touch it, and it will take you. Only Gargul himself will know your fate after that, so be warned."

Up in the air, Gareth has a better view of the landscape - black and red - the ground cut by glowing red streams and rivers, all flowing ahead eventually meeting wider red rivers. Occasionally there looks to be a bridge here and there, but apart from that, its barren.
At one point, something bright - like a small star whistles past over his head in the opposite direction to the river flow. As it zips past at high speed he is hit with a moment of pure joy that fades almost immediately.
Below him is the horde, bellowing with disappointment at not being able to reach him. Ahead is the party, safe for now.
A little ahead, off to his right on the ground are two shoes - about 20 feet apart, as though someone kicked them off.

Clangden's examination of the mask tells him that although its been stomped on a number of times, there's no blood, or hair - signs that its wearer had met a sticky end.

"By the way," adds Torel with a smirk. " Who would hate you people so much to let you walk into that little reception committee, eh?" he stabs a finger at the distant horde. "I haven't seen such a concentration of undead before in this place. If that wasn't a trap then may Gargul strike out my left eye."

Gareth (Invisible)
Friday November 22nd, 2002 10:07:50 PM

The warrior speaks into his dragon ring. "I see 2 shoes. She is leaving us a trail. Follow me!". He immediately flies in the direction of the shoes with his swords brandished like the fighter he is. He once there he looks around for the most reasonable escape route. He decides to not waste any time trying to examine the shoes - assuming they belong to the Overlord. "I'm going invisible guys. I don't want them to see me up here.". The warrior uses his ring to go dark and continues to search.

Tericus
Saturday November 23rd, 2002 2:32:22 PM

"Im not hearing any voices, so I must be ok." Tericus says. then he tells the undead hunter "We fought and banished a liche and his vampire companions not too long ago. It could very well be him. Moralas was his name, I think."

Jus  d20=14
Sunday November 24th, 2002 11:40:05 PM

"I'm," Jus begins, "that is, me, Jus, am kinda... well... not really voices, but there is a pull... and some whispers."

Jus drops the subject quickly, intending to find something better to talk about. Looking around, he drops that decision and moves onward. "Who would take the overlord to this place? Another Undead Hunter? I still have some discomfort about that guard of hers."

Looking around, with glances to the streams, Jus decides to cast Shield [Rolled against wisdom in casting it now].

Clangden
Monday November 25th, 2002 9:44:33 AM

after catching up with the group and dropping to one knee, Clangden doubles over and unleashes yet another pile of refuse from his stomach.

assuming the healer tends to this malady, Clangden resumes his posture, and begins following Gareth.

DM Jan
Monday November 25th, 2002 1:37:35 PM

Gareth's image winks out, leaving the undead below a little confused. They begin to shuffle toward the other party instead, although for now they're still a distance away.

(I'm presuming someone relayed Gareth's message to the NPC)

In order to get to where the warrior was, before he went invisible, everyone has to step or jump over a few 2ft wide streams of Woldsblood. It's not much of a problem for Tericus, Addinein and Clangden - but for Nonam and Jus, for the instant they're right above the stream, those whispers almost become screams of urgency.

Torel speaks to Tericus in a low voice.
"Your faith in Alemi will keep you strong against the pull of the Blood, but keep your eye on those two," he says pointing to Nonam and Jus. "Especially him," his eyes flick toward Jus. "I see struggle in his eyes."

Clangden clears his stomach once more. Away from the gaggle of ghouls and their equally horrendous bretheren, he finds he is able to breathe easier, and his stomach stops doing the loop di loop.
Torel reaches down, offering his water skin.

"A lich called Moralas, you say?" asks the undead hunter, rapidly changing the subject. "Sounds like someone who definitely needs to answer the call and be at the final mercy of Gargul. I've never understood those creatures. Who would want to choose to live in that state?" He pauses and looks around. "Now how in a blue devil's belly are we supposed to follow someone we can't see? Someone tell that boy not to fly too high," he adds, as another bright spark of light shoots overhead. "Tell him to follow the flow, for thats the way we're going."

Looking in the direction of 'the flow' - the landscape seems to stretch on and on, but there doesn't appear to be any other option than to explore the territory right now.

But there are questions -

If the party was ambushed, who was responsible?
Were they after the Overlord? Or the Storm Dragons? Both?
The Overlords aide - currently unconscious back in the anteroom, was there more to him than met the eye? Or was he just a Floating City noble out to make a name for himself?
What could have happened to the Overlord herself? Was she still alive? Was she alone? Was she captured?
Questions, questions and there were probably a million more.....

Certainly enough to evaluate and discuss on the trek ahead.

Clangden
Monday November 25th, 2002 4:24:35 PM

accepting the offered waterskin, Clangden drinks heavily, spitting out the first few mouthfuls to get the yuk out of his mouth.

Thank you Torel for the water.
*hands him back his waterskin*

Listening to Torel, Clangden starts waving for Gareth to come back to the group.

Someone ask Gareth to please return to the group so's that we could discuss a plan before we all go off half cocked. don't know about the rest of ya, I don't want to be in the middle of discussing things when we get clobbered again. sides, this might be a good time for us to cast any spells on each other that might assist us in the coming troubles.

Tericus, don't you have spells that can aid you in figuring out where we go from here, some kind of diving or scrying spell? wouldn't that help us to locate the Overlord faster??

Nonam
Monday November 25th, 2002 6:25:29 PM

Nonam drifts along with the rest of the group. Looking at Torel once he asks, "What was that you said? I'm trying to hear what they are saying. It's hard listening to both."

Jus
Monday November 25th, 2002 8:32:49 PM

Jus looks at Nonam, then glances nervously towards Torel. Jus is relieved that Nonam may have heard the same voices, but it scares him at the same time. Following along, Jus manages to keep his thoughts to himself.

Gareth (Invisible)
Monday November 25th, 2002 10:16:25 PM

Totally focused on the shoe trail, the warrior continues to follow the path left by who he presumes to be the overlord. He speaks again into the ring "I see a pair of shoes clearly kicked off. I expect she is being carried." (He would now have traveled 2 rounds at full speed flying as previously specified).

Addinein
Tuesday November 26th, 2002 2:42:35 AM

Taking the cue from Torel, Addinein decides to bring up the rear of the group, so he can keep an eye out on the two members of the group that need watching. Addressing his question to Torel, "Do you have any idea as to who may have opened this 'portal', or what we might expect"

Tericus
Tuesday November 26th, 2002 9:38:57 AM

"Keep moving," Tericus says. "We don't want to be slowed down by the undead."

Running in front of the party, Tericus contacts Gareth, relaying Clangden's request.

DM Jan
Tuesday November 26th, 2002 2:19:59 PM

"Its funny you should ask that," says Torel to Addinein. "A priest of Gargul would never have left a portal open like that - not to the Shadowlands. It's far too dangerous. I have heard spells can be bought. To be honest I thought it was just a rumour, until now. It smells like the work of a twisted wizard if you ask me. Eyes of Gargul only visit this place in order to right a wrong, and as you can see - there are many wrongs wandering about here."
He chuckles grimly.

"Shut them out! Don't listen." he commands Nonam sternly. "Unless you want to die."

Tericus contacts Gareth at Clangden's request and herds everybody onward. Its perhaps just as well, for even Torel seems slightly distracted, occasionally looking back to the distant shuffling undead with a look of pure hatred in his eyes.

A sense of purpose and concentration is strongest in Tericus, Clangden, Addinein and Gareth. Nonam and Jus will have a fight on their hands. Whisper whisper whisper.....

Up in the air, although Gareth's mind is reasonably safe from the Woldsblood, he isn't exactly in the clear.

They want you to go back down, and anyway I didn't think she was 'that' beautiful. I've seen better, and what do YOU want with power? It'll go to your head. It and she will be the ruin of you. Hmph.

- carps Max, with an obvious hint of jealousy.

The group moves on. And on.
Clangden's apprehensions are luckily unfounded. The path before them seems relatively quiet. Occasionally, a single ghoul staggers near every now and then, but apart from that, the journey is fairly uneventful. The pathways between the streams do not leave many choices to deviate.

It's now 8 hours since the Storms Dragons entered the Shadowlands.
Tired?

Gareth
Tuesday November 26th, 2002 9:20:35 PM

Terribly perplexed that he has seen absolutely nothing (er - if he's flown full speed in the air following the blood flow for 8 hours surely he would have overtaken them by now...). The warrior flies back to the group. "I flew a long way guys. No sign other than those shoes - which I presume were hers. Any luck here?". He waits with the others to decide what to do. "I imagine if they can go without rest so can we. I have no idea where to go next. Ideas?".

(~~ Jan ~~ David, its a wide area, and you never specified if you crossed any streams or rivers, or went as the crow flies, how high, how low etc etc. Imagine a large delta - lots of streams, lots of rivers. Perceptions are different here, too. I suppose it's only right that Gareth should be a little perplexed. This place is far from the norm, and he wasn't exactly safe up there, with all those sparks flying around.)

Addinein
Wednesday November 27th, 2002 12:45:06 AM

Thinking back to earlier episodes Addinein comments, "This wouldn't be the work of the twisted individual that caused the attack on the underlord was it?" Addinein looks to the other members to see what their reactions are.

Clangden

pushing forward, but getting a bit tired, due to the fact it was evening when the group entered the area.

you know, Torel, is there a place here where it is somewhat safe to stop for a bit? if i'm getting tired I know the rest of you are starting to feel the time too.

starts looking for a somewhat safe, and defensable place to stop and rest.

Nonam  d20+22=33
Thursday November 28th, 2002 7:58:45 AM

Nonam makes a few attempts at idle chatter over the 8 hours in an effort to block out the voices. Not finding enough interest in conversation, at least not enough on a high enough level to keep his mind occupied, the wizard tries to remember details of all his spells and keeps reciting them over in his mind. All in an effort to block out the voices.

(concentration=31)

Tericus
Thursday November 28th, 2002 10:42:33 AM

Tericus agrees with Clangden. "Unless Torel has a better idea, let's look for a wide clearing between streams." With a glance towards Nonam and Jus, Tericus continues. "We should double up on the watches. Nonam and Jus can sleep. Torel and I can take turns watching through the night. The rest of you can trade off as you see fit."

Jus  d20=9
Thursday November 28th, 2002 10:46:17 AM

Jus listens distantly to Tericus, not really paying attention. With his Shield spell long gone, Jus wonders if he should cast something else. Perhaps Stoneskin, or Magic Circle Against Evil.

He manages to decide to wait [wis roll], feeling a little more comfortable -- for the moment.

DM Jan
Thursday November 28th, 2002 1:07:39 PM

Gareth returns to the group after a frantic search, regretfully with no sightings of the Overlord or any clue that might tell them where she is.

The others need some time to rest and replenish spells. Nonam looks extremely preoccupied, and Jus also appears to have some kind of internal struggle on his hands.

Clangden and Tericus find what looks like a reasonable spot - a wider part of a broad path on which to rest a while, and at this particular point there are no branches off elsewhere, meaning that only the front and rear needs to be watched.

'Who DID kill the Underlord?' asks Torel while setting up camp, curious after Addinein brought up the subject.

At one point, the grim looking undead hunter takes Gareth to one side, easily tall enough to look him in the eye.
'So where were you?' he asks, sternly - his tone making the warrior feel like he's twelve years old. 'Up there? Do you see that?'
He points upward as another spark of light hurtles past at great speed in the air above.
'That's life, lad - on its way to be reborn. Imagine crashing into one of those and killing it? Can you imagine what Gargul would have to say about that? Hmmm? You listen to me, and watch yourself here. This place carries reverent life as well as the scum we're cutting down.'

The man then laughs unpleasantly. 'Mind you, I've never seen the wrath of Gargul up close. Might be a fine thing to watch, eh? So long as your not on the recieving end.'

During the watches, there's plenty of opportunity to defend the camp from the occasional tottering ghoul and gangly skeleton. Whoever shares the watch with Torel will see that this man loves his work, cutting down undead with extreme relish with a nasty grin on his face. Of course its obvious in the way he spoke to Gareth, and to Clangden who barred his way back at the palace - this guy never went to Charm School.

At one point the man wanders further up the trail a little while. He looks to be checking the ground, like a ranger would in the forest.

After about seven hours, its obviously time to move on, for there's a distant body of undead approaching, not as many as before, but they're obviously whats left of the group following the party.

Nonam and Jus have had a bad time of it. Although managing to retain their spell focus, the constant whispering and lure of Woldsblood has taken its toll.

(Nonam -1 Wisdom)
(Jus -2 Wisdom)

Torel says -
'I caught a whiff of something strong further up the trail. Something powerful has passed this way, but I think we're going to need help. There's a temple of Gargul nearby, so as we move on - look for a break in the landscape. Someone there might know something.'

Shadowlands time - 15 hours and counting.....

He continues to wear the tiger mask, evidentally having forgotten about it.

"Gareth? Did you see any signs of a temple during your flight?", Tericus asks.

When he notices Clangden, Tericus approaches the dwarf and asks him if he is having trouble resisting the voices. Tericus then takes a closer look, wondering if the undead had a greater affect on Clangden then they realized [spot roll of 27].

Satisfied that all is well for now, Tericus readies himself to leave. "Everyone ready? We'd better get moving soon."

"Clangden, after you," Tericus adds, gesturing towards the distant horizon.

Saturday November 30th, 2002 9:23:51 AM

Concern flashes across his face as he sees his other companions struggling with the voices in this place. After Torel mentions it Addinein speaks up, "I think stopping at the temple would definitely be a benefit to us."

DM Jan
Monday December 2nd, 2002 1:14:47 AM

The group set off once more.

Torel accedes point to Clangden and stays to the rear of the group, his stony eyes shifting toward Jus once in a while. Nonam's face he cannot see and therefore cannot judge how he is doing.

To Tericus, apart from the hair colour change, Clangden seems fine. So do Gareth and Addinein, in terms of being focussed and being their 'usual' self.

The whispers in Jus's and Nonam's heads become more insistant. It seems the only thing that will satisfy them would be to walk to the edge of the path and jump into the stream of Woldsblood, flowing like lava not too far away. Somewhere deep inside is a survival instinct, also yelling at them to stop.

The path splits off, and splits off again, over a jagged bridge of what looks like black rock, and then continues.

Then, a little later, Torel calls ahead, ordering Clangden to stop. There is another fork and a bridge. In the distance to the left, the land seems a little distorted, and there's a blue glow in the midst of it.

"A temple!" announces the undead hunter, followed by a curse. "But to the right is the trail of something which might also give us answers. It's something strong... undead, perhaps a lich or worse. It's trail was too close to where we entered to be a coincidence I think. It seems we have a choice to make."

Clangden
Monday December 2nd, 2002 10:43:09 AM

i don't think there is a choice, we must first seek the knowledge and help of Gargul before we continue. my opinion only of course. why don't we go to the temple first, then come back and take the other trail?

Nonam
Monday December 2nd, 2002 4:38:29 PM

When the group stops to ponder the choice of path, Nonam wanders over to one of the streams of Woldsblood and stares at it.

Gareth
Monday December 2nd, 2002 8:32:15 PM

The warrior takes the rebuke of the hunter without comment. He looks to his comrades as some seem to be struggling. "With the state of our casters I'd say maybe we could get some help for them at the temple. I'd hate to encounter whatever it was without them. I would say we should defer to the hunter in this. What do you think we should do?", he asks.

Tericus
Monday December 2nd, 2002 10:17:35 PM

Tericus moves over to Nonam and gently guides him back to the path. "The temple seems to be the logical choice.

Addinein
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 12:20:31 AM

Responding to Terol's question Addinein states, "We should be one healthy group, not something that is splintered. Assuming the temple is probably the place to do that, I'm thinking we want to go to the temple."

Jus  d20=10
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 8:54:49 AM

Jus furrows his brow as the others talk. Then he realizes everyone must be talking about Nonam.

Nodding his had with sadness and pity, Jus agrees with the others, "We'd better hurry, it looks like he may be having trouble resisting."

Anyone looking too close sees Jus staring past Nonam at the stream nearby. Jus' eyes are twitchy, as he fights whatever pulls at him inside.

Nonam
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 10:39:21 AM

Responding to Tericus Nonam turns and looks at him through his now ever present tiger mask, "The temple sounds ok." There isn't much feeling in the response.

DM Jan
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 11:03:32 AM

Up so close to the flowing stream of Woldsblood, Nonam realises something. What he is currently staring at is pure, raw, concentrated magic. It radiates unbelievable power, more than he could ever imagine. It's mind blowing. It's perhaps one of THE major sources of magic in the Wold. Perhaps the only source. Imagine if it could be captured and harnessed, even a little...

Tericus pulls him away from it.

Gareth's question is answered almost unanimously, and so the gnarled undead hunter nods, and points out the path to Clangden.

"Take the second bridge on the left there - the first one looks like it leads to a dead end."

Addinein, Gareth and Tericus can see that both Nonam and Jus are acting VERY odd. It's in Jus's eyes and Nonam's behaviour.

The journey takes about an hour. There are a lot of tributaries to cross and the occasional undead to swat out of the way.

Eventually the group approaches part of the landscape that seems a little hazy. There's a mist, and shapes within it, as though there are two scenes to be looked upon, two planes blended together. There's a shape of a pillar or two, a marble floor, and in contrast - glowing blue - an almost solid shape of an altar.

Suddenly, a disembodied voice rings out.

"Hold! Stay where you are! Who in Garguls Eye are you people?"

Both Addinein and Gareth feel a little coldness pass them momentarily.

Clangden
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 11:24:30 AM

speaking out he replies: We are servants to the God's of Wold, it is us, the representatives to the Floating City in search of answers to the disappearance of a friend. Our new comrade, Torel, a servant to Gargul has brought us here. May we come in to the safety of your temple and speak with you?

stays on alert.

Gareth
Tuesday December 3rd, 2002 9:36:34 PM

The warrior looks again to the cleric of Gargul to respond. "Looks like we'll see how Gargul feels about you...". He keeps a close eye on Jus and Nonam to make sure they don't do anything stupid. He lines himself up so he could tackle or knock them out instantly if they try to go for a dive.

Jus  d20=19

Addinein

keeping quiet for the moment, Tericus continues to keep a close eye on Nonam, and after Jus's comment, he starts to look after Jus too

Nonam
Wednesday December 4th, 2002 10:23:28 AM

Nonam uses detect magic to look at a rivulet of Woldsblood. The stuff is interesting, and if he could capture some in a vial. Telekinesis should do the trick. That way he wouldn't have to touch the stuff. Perhaps he could study it that way. Certainly not here, but surely a small amount would be safe for study back in Floating City. Everyone else is acting weird about the stuff though. Certainly it's dangerous, but so are a lot of other things. He'd have to make sure they wouldn't interrupt.

As Nonam starts thinking about his plan to capture some Woldsblood, he seems a little more like his old calculating self. He even takes the mask off and puts it away. "Um, why didn't anyone mention that I still had this on?" The straps have left little pressure lines on Nonam's face.

DM Jan
Wednesday December 4th, 2002 12:38:57 PM

Clangden's announcement and request rings out, and for an awkward moment all is silent.
Gareth's comment brings a raised eyebrow, followed by a ruined, humorous grin from Torel as they wait for something to happen.

Suddenly, a shadow on the ground seems to take on more solidity, and at once there is a woman stood there, directly in front of Clangden, dressed in dour grey robes and wearing an open eye symbol similar to that of Torel's. Her hair is shaved back, almost to the crown of her head, the remainder tied back in a severe pony tail. She looks at the group with cold, impassive eyes; trails of mist curl at the base of her gown. She radiates cold. The overall effect is VERY creepy.

The undead hunter steps forward and identifies himself, and a heated conversation passes back and forth between the two. The main bone of contention appears to be the fact that the Storm Dragons are where they should not be.
However, there is another...

Torel turns to the group.

"This is Norella. She is a Grim, an Eye of Gargul, and currently stands guard at the Temple here because - Norella, perhaps you should explain."

The female human sweeps her cold eyes over the group.

"Something has happened. An anomaly. Only a mile away from the Temple, we discovered an open portal to the Shadowlands. We don't know how it got there, but we closed it as soon as it was discovered. Someone or something has entered here. Whoever it was, they must have gone deeper, for I was unable to detect them nearby. I thought it might be you..." she paused.
"But apparently not. Torel tells me the female you seek matters enough to rescue. I have my doubts, but I will trust my fellow Eye of Gargul's judgement in this."

Her eyes bore into Clangden.
"If you leave here and enter the Temple, there is no guarantee that you will arrive in the same place when you return here. If it is a trail you follow, then I would advise you to remain for now, but not for long. This place is - "

Norella raises her arm and points, almost accusingly toward Jus and Nonam.

"Bring those two to me, before they are lost!"

Torel looks expectantly at Gareth, Tericus, Clangden and Addinein to help out if any of the spellcasters resist.

Thursday December 5th, 2002 9:58:54 AM

Jus grabs his swords when the priest speaks about he and Nonam. He doesn't draw, and doesn't have time to, before Clangden and the others start pushing them towards her.

"Look around you, friends. Does this really look like the place to get help?" Jus asks in a firm voice. Still he doesn't fight too much, realizing something may indeed be wrong.

Nonam
Thursday December 5th, 2002 10:48:10 AM

Figuring he can capture a vial of woldsblood later when it won't be as much trouble, Nonam walks over.

He takes out a potion of intelligence on his way over and drinks it, "I've been thinking that this potion might help. It will hone the intellect and make it easier for me to concentrate. Anything else you can do would be appreciated." The wizard puts the empty vial away in his pocket.

DM Jan
Thursday December 5th, 2002 1:29:42 PM

Pushed and/or encouraged by the others, Jus and Nonam find themselves stood directly before the female priest.
Some of Jus's fears seem justified as she reaches out and touchs them both on the shoulder. There is a feeling as cold as ice, emptiness and dread, followed by such a burst of clarity and freedom, it is startling - as though their spirits have been let out of a locked box. During that time, the whispers become silent.

Norella then steps back.
"That's the best I can do," she says firmly. "I cannot offer anything else other than advice, and that would be to leave this place as soon as possible."

Both Jus and Nonam retrieve 1 Wisdom point.
They both also get the opportunity to re-roll their Wisdom score.

The tall, chewed up-looking undead hunter thanks his fellow Eye of Gargul.
"Well," he says to the others, "lets get back to that trail and hope it leads us to what we came for. Come on - we haven't got all day," and with that - Mr Charming sets off.

The Grim winks out of sight once more, leaving only her shadow behind.

Away from the temple, the landscape takes on its normal gloom, with the ground split up into black and red.

As for that other portal the Grim was talking about earlier - what was that all about?

About an hour further up the original trail, the scenery hasn't changed, except for one thing. There's a dead ghoul lying on the path.

Gareth feels a sudden agitation, coming from Max - like he's gearing up for something.

Clangden, Tericus and Jus move further up the trail toward the laughter.

Gareth winks out of sight and wisely gets out of Nonam's blasting range, ready to take to the air, while Addenin and Torel stay closer to the wizard on the ground.

Then - in a matter of seconds, maybe less - all heck breaks loose.

Nonam's spell goes off in spectacular fashion, and for just an instant, there's a rather nifty glass, winged, fiendish creature suspended in the air - right before it comes hurtling down. It's impact with the ground sounds like a bomb, and it breaks into what looks like a million deadly glass shards that go hurtling outward, embedding into armour, cutting into flesh.

Nonam, Addinein, Gareth and Torel are in range, and must save REFLEX DC27 or take bloody cuts to exposed flesh and 29 DAM.

At the same time - something big, ugly and winged, a bit like its brother in the air, winks into sight on the ground right in front of Clangden, who's advanced in front of Tericus and Jus. The thing is on it's backswing, right before bringing down a mighty blow toward the dwarf.

Hits AC 35 for 25 Dam (Did I hit or just miss?)

Further ahead, there's a surprised and angry curse as the glass monster disintegrates. The shape of a man appears about 70 ft away, and arrows come hurtling from that direction, straight at Jus and Tericus.

Smiling to confront a fellow archer, Jus activates his Boots of Speed in preparation for his next attack. He launches a volley of his returning arrows at the nemesis. Unfortunately, Jus' time away from his bow shows in the poor quality of his first few shots [A:26/19/28 D:3/5/11].

He wants to see if there are any other surprises while there is still one grouping of four people around.

The flying glass also catches Torel who gives Nonam a look that suggests it wasn't particularly appreciated.

"Try and take that archer alive!" he barks angrily. "I'd like to know what the heck all this is about!"

Flames in various forms fly from Tericus and Nonam, and shoot toward the distant archer. In the gloom its difficult to tell whether the fire has fried him or not. This is followed by a volley of arrows from Jus, which seem to go sailing past their target.

Addinein's better than average vision tell him that for now - the big ugly trying to chop Clangden's head off, and the archer up ahead, seem to be the only remaining combatants.

Gareth flies up into a position ready to engage the winged creature, in time to see one of Clangden's blows bite deep. Max is itching to get started.
The beast grins, as though it enjoys the pain.

The creature swings back at Clangden. It's axe looks mean, swishing down, matching the dwarf in a dance to the death.

Protected by his shield, Tericus moves closer to the bowman. Now he can see that this is indeed a man, dressed in dark clothes that help him blend in with his surroundings.

The man is busy re-nocking arrows and preparing to fire once more, when all of a sudden, he seems to freeze. This is immediately before a set of arrows arrive, do their work, then shoot back to their owner. Their *thud-thud-thud-thud* impact cause the bowman to move slightly, but apart from that - nothing.

Tericus does not appear to be under any immediate threat.

Back a little ways, Jus discovers something dark and slick coating three of his returned arrows. The scent of it causes the voices in his head to sing, loud and hypnotic.

Meanwhile, the winged beast lets out a terrible howl as Clangden gets three nasty blows in, and if thats not bad enough, it finds itself attacked from above by Gareth - his sword Max carving away efficiently and getting in two slices through the thick flesh.

Again... yes!

As Gareth leaps away from the monster's line of vision - it has no option but to keep hacking away at Clangden, which it does with an angry rage, slamming its axe into the dwarf again and again.

Beset by axe arrow and sword - the huge winged creature makes a final ghastly howl and drops like a stone.
*THUD*

Torel, who'd been on the opposite flank to Addinein, raises a grisly eyebrow.
"Well - that took some doing. Nice work, boys," he says with a definitive nod, and strides over toward the archer.

Clangden feels like he's been knocked into next week, and will need patching up, and Gareth's head is filled with cries of victory, by an over excited Max - pleased as punch at striking the killing blow. The sword isn't usually this loud - maybe this place is getting to him too.

Two of Jus's arrows are now coated with some kind of blue goo, and they smell of death.

At Nonam's suggestion, Addinein ties up the stricken archer using sashes and rope. The man is still unable to move or speak.

Torel takes Tericus to one side.
"I will assist you with any healing if you want," he says quietly. "But I know they would probably prefer your healing touch to mine," adds the spooky Gargulian. "Your call."

"Make him talk," he then says in all seriousness to the others. "Perhaps if he lost his bow fingers.."

Well... what to do about this goo on his arrows? Jus tries to wipe off what he can on a relatively clean part of the beast's remains. It's a shame the blood arrows didn't do anything significant.

Jus takes another look at the arrows, tossing them aside if he can't get the goo off.

While waiting for Nonam's spell to wear off, Tericus starts to heal the worst injured and voices his concerns about the prisoner. Nonam hands Clangden a healing potion to help things along.

Torel is a little further along the path, crouched down and muttering - he looks to be tracking.

Jus manages to clean off the blood and goo from his arrows - half human blood from the prisoner, monster blood from the winged creature - life to those it belonged to, but nothing compared to the sheer power and magic of that which runs not too far away from his feet, seductive and eating away at his resolve.

Gareths calms Max down, although there is a wave of eagerness, now the sword has something else to do.

As for the prisoner -

Clangden and Addinein can see the man for who he is - half elven, about 5ft 10", with a long braid of blond hair down his back. The instant he comes out of the spell, his facial expression changes to one of fear, laced with cunning.
His eyes dart between Clangden's knife and Addinein's dark elven visage.
"Keep me alive, and I'll tell you anything you need to know," he gasps. "Once they know I've failed, then I'm dead meat. I need you to protect me. Throw me in jail, whatever you want, but I need protection. That is my price. What say you?"

Lichs... whispers Max triumphantly in Gareths head. Three of them, and they're heading for Koshe Marr.

(Second d8 was for the 1 I rolled for healing, remember to reroll 1's when it comes to healing folks.)

Walking over to the winged creature, he kicks it again for good measure, then scoops up the axe it was using as a weapon, then walks over to Torel and asks what he is pondering over.

Nonam glugs down a potion of detect thoughts while Addinein and the others see to the questioning. The wizard keeps his focus on the prisoner to see if he's telling the truth and such. Nonam also tries to figure out who or what the man is afraid of.

While he concentrates on the thoughts, Nonam washes out the potion vial with a little water from his skin. Then he cleans out the empty vial from the intelligence potion too. He dries them out with another of his silk sashes, once he's finished and tucks them back into their carrying place.

You will talk before we just decide to kill you. If you tell us what we need to know you will leave with your life - at least by our hands. Why did your masters take the girl? DM Jan
Tuesday December 17th, 2002 11:52:59 AM

Clangden retrieves the axe from the dead beast. It's well made - obviously a masterwork, possibly more.
Torel tells him that he's trying to pick up some kind of trail.
"I have the ability to track undead, but my skill is enhanced when I know exactly what I'm looking for."
He nods toward Jus. "Pull him away, before it holds his mind, and you lose him."

Jus's actions meanwhile are becoming very dangerous. He will note how easy the Woldsblood slips away from the arrow tip, leaving no coating, no trace. The stream appears to command his full attention.

As for the prisoner, faced with multiple threats and intimidation, he appears to make some kind of decision and starts singing like a canary.
The entire plot - as he appears to know it, spills out.

"She was merely bait. They knew you'd try a rescue. Once it was apparent that she was going to be voted in, rather than a candidate they controlled - they sought to befriend her and become her council. They made a deal with some VERY unsavoury types - undead - who could have the girl if they put up a welcome committee for you guys.
Obviously it wasn't welcoming enough, and they sent me into this godsawful place to finish the job if need be. I figured there'd only be a few stragglers left. I figured wrong."
He shrugs in his bonds before continuing.
"Just think of it - had it worked, the Black Dragons would have been rid of the Storm Dragons, and they could have had their own candidate re-elected and the entire City under their control. Not a bad plan - if it had worked. Heh. I think they were planning on saying that 'you' had abducted the Overlord, or somesuch that would besmirch your name."

He gives a smug grin, his eyes shifting toward Tericus.
"You won't kill me, or hurt me - he won't let you - will you, priest. It'll prey on his conscience if you cut me loose and I turn up dead. Oh yeah, you gotta take care of me. As for your sisters, drow - I've danced with them before. They don't scare me."

He re-affirms what Max told Gareth.
"Three lichs have her. They want to make some bargain with a daemon, but they have to get closer to the Lands of Rest."
He starts to laugh. "They probably think they're free and clear."

As Nonam listens, he gradually gets the impression the man is telling the truth except for one thing. Those sisters of the Underdark frighten him a great deal.

Clangden
Tuesday December 17th, 2002 4:30:39 PM

"Well, Torel, it appears we now know what we are looking for -- three Liches. And if my memory serves me right, those are nasty undead beasts, undead nonetheless, and as you said, you can track those nasties like none other can. So, you lead, and I follow and kill if that's what the gods will me to do."

Turning to the rest of the group he says, "Whatever we are gonna do, we need to do it now, I have to be someplace in a week or a lot of people are gonna be terribly upset. And heaven forbid, that happens."

Addinein

Addinein waits as he sees Gareth try to knock out the prisoner.

"I can tell you in a few hours. I didnt think it was a vital spell considering where we are." Tericus says as Gareth hits him on the head. "He is right about one thing though, I wont leave him to die. I bet he has someway of getting back." then Tericus begins to search the man for a ring or something that might send him back to his home

Nonam
Wednesday December 18th, 2002 7:01:03 PM

Nonam looks over at Gareth, "You know we can't take a prisoner with us..."

Nonam wanders over to pull Jus away from the Woldsblood. When he gets there he whispers, "We can study it later, but it's too strong here. Come back to the group." As long as the Detect Thoughts is working, Nonam tries to check out the Woldsblood. Does the potion help the voices become more clear?

Wednesday December 18th, 2002 11:45:52 PM

As soon as Clangden inform's Torel of their foe, the big undead hunter stands up and nods.
"Lichs - I thought I could smell lichs - right, lets move. This way."

"The name's Ranyer - " answers the prisoner to Gareth. He's about to add, "Bow for hi -" when Gareth's sword slams into his head and he slumps forward. From what Addinein can see - he looks to be out cold.

Tericus finds an intricately designed ring on the half-elf's finger, and a carved elven scroll case clipped to his belt. Inside is a single scroll. His longbow lies a few feet away.

Nonam rescues the distracted Jus from the dangers of the Woldsblood stream. The potion he drank doesn't appear to make much of a difference to the voices themselves, they continue to sing on, beckoning. But there is a feeling of truth, and inevitability to them.

Jus will note that the arrow is as clean as a whistle. Not one minute drop is attached to the tip.

"Okay - whats the plan?" asks Torel as he beckons them over a rugged bridge. "And what are you going to do about him?" He points to the
slumped prisoner.
Looking ahead, it seems that the streams are starting to meet up and grow into rivers.

Tericus

Nonam
Thursday December 19th, 2002 5:45:56 PM

Nonam starts to ponder the woldsblood himself to Tericus comes over, and the wizard has a look. He'll use his permanent read & detect magic and comprehend languages to help with the scroll if need be, "A proper identification spell will take too long to cast, but let me have a look just the same."

Gareth
Thursday December 19th, 2002 10:37:59 PM

The warrior looks up. "Max told me there are 3 lichs and they're heading for Koshe Marr - wherever that is. Sounds like we've a good chance to catch them if they think we're taken care of. Frankly, I don't care what you do with this guy. If he fires arrows at me he chose the wrong side and loses any sympathy I might have had. I'd say just leaving him alive with his stuff would be good enough. That is, if we can prevent him from contacting the liches. Otherwise if I'm forced to choose him or the Overlord, he loses and that's that.".

Jus
Thursday December 19th, 2002 11:37:40 PM

Everyone, I'm going to be available to post for the most part, but I know some of you are traveling, and that it is a time for family and friends. I was planning to maybe play it by ear, and certainly not launch into a big battle until we're all back to our regular schedule.
We do have a few points to consider in the meantime - what to do about Ranyer, and perhaps come up with a plan of attack and rescue. Your foe is likely to be powerful, and cunning.

What I would like to know - is a date when you're all back on a regular schedule and able to post. After the New Year?))

((BTW - apologies for not posting last night - the site was down for some reason.))

DM Jan
Friday December 20th, 2002 12:33:04 PM

From the script on the scroll, Tericus may recognise a Plane Shift spell, and Nonam will no doubt be able to confirm it.
The ring remains unidentified for the moment.

"Scrying is very difficult in this place," Torel tells Addinein. "There are no guarantees, even for the best of us. It is a world not easily tamed."

"It's entirely your decision as to what to do with him," he adds to Gareth, "but though I might have pained him a little to gather the truth from him, I would not condone his slaughter either. Remember Gargul is with us, and ever watching. For the undead of course, that is a different matter entirely."

"We need to move fast, follow the flow, but with care. They've gone deeper - toward the Lands of Rest, and I need to have a word with these two boys here."
The undead hunter's eyes swivel toward Nonam and Jus.

Nonam
Friday December 20th, 2002 5:34:21 PM

Nonam was about to walk over and slit the archer's throat to end that little discussion, but instead he turns to Torel and says, "What?"

Jus  d20=15
Friday December 20th, 2002 10:47:29 PM

Jus wonders what's up with Torel.

"These voices are still calling for me guys, I think something may be wrong with me," Jus tells the others. Glancing at the streams, he adds, "but I can't convince myself to stop listening."

"If we're not going to kill him, leave him his means to escape. We take everything else." The warrior gathers the man's things other than what the mages say we need to leave (ring, bow, arrows, etc.). He gives the stuff to whoever wants it.

Addinein

"Can we give him a sleep spell, or hold person, or something of that kind, to hold him for awhile?"

Clangden
Monday December 23rd, 2002 2:26:36 PM

Clangden goes up and pushes Nonam and Jus towards Torel saying, "He needs to have a few words with the both of you, and don't you even think about backtalkin' me boys. You ain't too old to get a whoopin."

After herding the two to Torel, Clangden takes up a position between the Wold's Blood and Nonam and Jus, making sure they don't get no ideas about going swimming.

"I wonder what a glass dwarf would look like..."

DM Jan
Tuesday December 24th, 2002 11:27:32 AM

As the group gets ready to leave, and Jus lets the others know the Woldsblood influence is becoming troublesome, Torel approaches the two spellcasters.

He is fully aware of how this place can affect people, and is concerned about the lives of Nonam and Jus. However - his brutal profession leaves him little time for politeness and social interaction. Brusque and confrontational, he makes Clangden sound like a real smooth talker.

Pointing at a nearby stream, he growls -

"Don't look at it,
don't listen to it,
don't mess with it,
don't talk to it,
don't touch it,
and under NO circumstances entertain any ideas about capturing any of it.
It WILL kill you.
Only a Fixer has the skill and years of training necessary to control Woldsblood."

He gives a sigh and for a moment seems a little less fearsome.

"I know only too well how seductive it is. Those who battle it's influence in the long term pay a price."

He says nothing more. Perhaps he doesn't have to. The scarred face, cold clammy skin, mysterious clouds of mist curling from beneath his cloak and overall creepiness suggest that this man would never be asked to tea or taken home to visit Mom.

As for the prisoner, he's starting to come around - his eyes still closed - Addinein and Gareth can hear him muttering incoherently.

Gareth has the bow, and the ring, unless Tericus took care of it.
The scroll containing the spell appears to be a 'way out'.

Gareth
Tuesday December 24th, 2002 11:35:14 AM

"So are you guys going to detain him or do I let Max taste his blood?". After the prisoner is dealt with (e.g. someone casts on him - or Max gets to have fun), the warrior suggests they move on quickly.

Clangden
Tuesday December 24th, 2002 5:16:11 PM

walking up to the prisoner.
kneeling before him he pulls out his waterskin and gently tips it up to his mouth, and lets him drink just a bit at a time, not to cause him to choke.
after he has his drink, Clangden looks deep into his eyes, with a twinkling look Clangden asks: if we promise to care for you, do you swear on all that is good and holy, do you swear on your life and honor, that you will not outwardly or deviously hurt or stop us in any way?
(if he swears, Clangden continues)
I then promise to protect you to the best of my abilities.
turning to the rest of the group, he says: promise him, so that he might take comfort in the fact that we are not like those who sent him here to kill us.
(turning back to the prisoner)
you will not be allowed any weapons of any kind, plus your hands will be bound in front of you. should we come under attack, stick by me, I will defend you to my death if the god's will it so. but know this, the first time you break your word to us, I will slit your throat myself.
(stands up, next to the prisoner, watching and waiting)

Nonam
Friday December 27th, 2002 11:23:57 AM

Nonam looks a bit perturbed about taking a prisoner and with Torel's nattering. He doesn't say anything about it though. "Let's get going, we've waited here long enough."

Addinein
Monday December 30th, 2002 8:41:08 AM

Not expecting the turn of events from the dwarf, Addinein holds his breath to see if the prisoner is receptive.

Tericus
Monday December 30th, 2002 7:58:53 PM

"Let him read his scroll. That will take him home." Tericus says as he holds the scroll out to the prisoner. Tericus doesnt return his ring though.

DM Jan
Tuesday December 31st, 2002 3:28:28 PM

Ranyer the half elf mercenary looks pleadingly into Clangden's eyes.
"I swear, I swear, I sw- " he says, right up until the point that Tericus hands over the scroll.

He takes it immediately, reads it as fast as lightning, and POOF!!! - he's gone.

Torel rolls his eyes.
"The rabble one finds in here. It's intolerable," he mutters before heartily agreeing with the decision to move one.

"That way," he points down a broad path in between two broadening streams of Woldsblood. "Okay - what is our plan? We haven't seen these 'characters' yet," he spits, "so maybe they're traveling invisibly. I'll be able to sense them when we're close, however."

Nonam
Wednesday January 1st, 2003 4:27:54 AM

Nonam offers, "I could see them if they were invisible. I've permenantly enchanted my eyes, you know." The wizard looks about just to make sure. "If we could arrange the ambush next time, that would be most agreeable. In any event, liches will be casting spells, so when we encounter them, I will create a globe of invulnerability for our fighters to attack from. It will ward off their weaker spells and likely give us the edge."

Tericus
Wednesday January 1st, 2003 8:12:34 AM

"I have a few surprises for the liche's too. That is, if we survive their first magical barrage." Tericus says

Gareth
Wednesday January 1st, 2003 2:38:33 PM

"I can travel invisibly and in the air at a much faster pace. Maybe I can stay below those life.. whatever they are's.". The warrior gets moving rapidly with the others after stowing the newly acquired bow and ring - and whatever else (e.g. I don't recall who got what, but Gareth makes sure nothing is left behind.).

Nonam
Thursday January 2nd, 2003 1:24:41 AM

Nonam tells Gareth before he leaves, "Your invisibility won't work on the liches. The undead are immune to illusions, but Jus isn't. He might pop you with an arrow by accident."

Clangden
Thursday January 2nd, 2003 2:35:19 PM

stands up, grabbing his axe, everyone sees that his features revert back to the way they were, black hair, and greying beard.

walking up to Torel he says: lead on, we've got a woman to save and some Liches to destroy.

hefting his axe, ordering his shield up, Clangden has a look of death in his eyes.

DM Jan
Thursday January 2nd, 2003 5:00:52 PM

The group sets off in the direction Torel pointed.
The further the distance traveled, the wider the streams of Woldsblood seem to become, making you wonder ultimately what lies ahead.

Then, after a little while, Torel stops. He looks to be sniffing the air.
About 100 yards ahead on the same path, Nonam's enhanced eyes spot a figure walking along, presumably in the same direction, away from the party.
This figure is holding a rope.
Attached to the other end of the rope is another figure, but this figure is floating about six feet in the air, and doesn't seem to be moving.

Tericus

"What do you smell?" Tericus asks Torel

Addinein

Jus  d20=15

"Try to give me a few minutes warning to cast preparation spells before we engage," Jus adds to the conversation. Otherwise, he trods along quietly, listening to the voices calling for him.

Nonam
Sunday January 5th, 2003 3:01:44 PM

"Um, does anyone else see that up there? It's a figure walking away from us. This figure is holding a rope. Attached to the other end of the rope is another figure, but this figure is floating about six feet in the air, and doesn't seem to be moving."

Nonam strains to make out a little more detail while he asks, "Um, Torel, what happens to undead if they're exposed to Woldsblood? Will it destroy them or make them stronger? Are they simply immune?"

Gareth (50% Displaced)
Sunday January 5th, 2003 3:17:49 PM

At Nonam's words the warrior activates his flying boots and draws Max (Quick Draw). "See what?".

DM Jan
Sunday January 5th, 2003 11:55:22 PM

In the middle of the path, Torel has stopped in his tracks. A frown is almost splitting his face in two.

"There's something forward of us, and we're getting close," he growls at Tericus and Addinein, confirming what Nonam has seen. He then turns and points back the way they came.
"But I also have a knot in my gut. Just a hunch. Back there... ah *&^%$%*..." he trails off after a rather colourful curse.

Max lets out a jolt of mental anticipation as he is drawn by Gareth, and unfortunately it seems that Jus isn't going to be allowed his few minutes of preparation, for about 75 ft behind the party - the ground appears to shimmer at two points, and two creatures - vaguely humanoid rise up and hover about 1ft in the air.

They are both ragged, skeletal and hideous - one appears to have some kind of crown on his head, the other is half dressed in white shreds.

The white shred-clad horror begins to speak in a high pitched, almost feminine tone, and moments later both figures emit a dark "glow".

The crowned one starts to laugh. It isnt pleasant and jangles in Jus's head, milling with the voices already there.

Up front, Nonam will see the invisible figure turn and pull the floating figure until it hovers over a stream of Woldsblood. It then begins to walk slowly back toward the party, trailing the floating figure alongside it. (Currently about 200 ft away).

"Woldsblood isn't choosy, lad!" Torel answers Nonam's question quickly as battle is about to commence. "Alive or undead - it will take us both to meet with Gargul!

"Dwarf," he adds to Clangden, "I hope that axe of yours is still sharp."

Your init, gentlemen.

He can move up to 375 pounds of the nasty liquid, and he picks up all that he can, giving it a good spray to make sure that at least a little of it contacts the lich.

Seeing only the 2 attackers at the rear, the warrior flies low to the ground and closes with the lich that Clangden has engaged wielding Max withboth hands. Jus activates his boots of speed, while watching Nonam's attack on the right lich. Shuddering with a mixture of fear and longing, Jus momentarily considers how easy it would be to join the Woldsblood. Now is not the time, though. Just to make sure he doesn't do anything rash, Jus moves to the center, between the streams.

Taking his time to get an unblocked view at the left lich in the rear, Jus begins to cast. With as much calm as he can muster, he completes the spell and sends a thin, green ray of Disintegration at the lich.

[hit ac20; used hero point, natural 20, hit ac 35 (critical threat - hit ac 24); Fortitude save for 21hp damage (+19hp if critical hit) or disintegrate]

DM Jan  4d6(4+2+4+4)=14
Tuesday January 7th, 2003 12:39:51 PM

Wasting no time, Clangden and Gareth move to engage the lich on the left - however, Tericus's BLADE BARRIER flashes into existance right before their eyes in a whirl of metal.

(David, Tim - I'll let you engage in that round, taking damage from the blade barrier, or you can hold back, saving your hero points for another opportunity. Lemme know.)

The lich gives a maddened shriek, rising up 30 ft into the air to avoid the blades, taking some damage in the process. He is further damaged as Jus's thin trail of doom connects and threatens to blow the creature into dust.

Suddenly, a large ball of Woldsblood rises from the stream on the right, adhering to itself like mercury, and rolls through the air toward the lich on the right, hitting the creature solidly before dropping to the ground.
For the lich itself, there is nothing spectacular about it's death. Snuffed like a candle as it's life energies are sucked out of its phylactery - it drops.

As for the Woldsblood -

The red ball of raw magic drops, and immediately starts to carve out a new stream on the ground. It moves fast, connecting with the stream opposite, others join it, until it has formed a tributary right across the path, connecting one stream to the other.
For a few mind-jarring moments, the magic within it literally sings out, affecting everyone, battering the subconscious, and for the first time - Gareth, Tericus, Addinein and Clangden get an inkling of how Nonam and Jus have felt all along in this place.
It seems to call out - join the flow, die now, your struggle is over... it is seductive and compelling.

This surge of power causes Nonam and Jus to drop another Wisdom point ahead of time.

"Look out! Watch your feet!" yells Torel as the streams cut a new, 5ft wide path, isolating Clangden and Gareth from the others.

((Gareth, Tericus, Clangden, Addinein - time for another Wisdom save, gentlemen - DC 15, or start to hear the voices and suffer a gradual drop in Wisdom at 10 hour intervals.))

The crowned lich cackles and screeches out a command, and suddenly Gareth and Clangdens little island is shared by a blue slaad - its big, its blue, with an ugly frog face, nasty jaws, claws and some rather impressive bone hooks on the back of its hands.
It smiles.

Meanwhile - left to its own devices and full concentration, the lich further down the path approaches, trail it's floating captive precariously over the Woldsblood stream.

A cloud suddenly erupts, 20ft high, speeding toward the group, rolling forward, spitting hot ash and severly limiting visibility.
Everyone except Gareth and Clangden take 14 DAM, every round they're in the cloud. Reflex
DC22 for half.

Realizing that he has no flying capabilities Addinein casts Expeditious Retreat and quickly moves out of the cloud (120'). Nonam sees the incendiary cloud coming and rolls out of its direct path. His ring of evasion provides a measure of comfort in the operation and keeps the wizard from burning up this round. (hero point to reroll that 19, gets 25)

Nonam momentarily thinks about flying up out of the mess, but the surge from the woldsblood goes to his head, and he retaliates with his own thin green disintegration ray cast at the lich near the Overlord.
(hero point to reroll that 22 gets 29)(hits AC 29 touch attack, fortDC25 or 5d6, overcomes SR28)

Then Nonam uses the power of the boots of speed to cast again. This time he goes with a chain lightning cast at the lich near the Overlord. He doesn't arc it anywhere and delivers the full blast to the single lich. (55 pts, reflexDC25 for half, overcomes SR34)

Jus drops to one knee as the voices scream out for him. "No... no...," Jus almost whimpers as the Woldsblood drowns out his other thoughts.

Barely pulling himself together (just made WI-3 roll), Jus struggles to a stand.

He sees Nonam's spells go off towards the invisible Lich. Taking advantage of the visual terminiation of the ray, lightning, and missiles, Jus casts Glitterdust over the invisible Lich's general area [okay with chance of spell failure - 54%].

With a curt curse as the Glitterdust reveals what appears to be the overlord, Jus yells for the others through the Dragon Ring, "The invisible lich has the overlord over the blood!"

With hopes that someone else can save the Overlord, Jus casts his own Chain Lightning at the same Lich Nonam hit. [34 dam, save for half - no spell failure (77)].

The surge of Woldsblood makes it's presence known, this time it succeeds in breaking down Addinein's mental barriers and he starts to become vulnerable.

Clangden immediately sets into the nasty blue monster, hitting true twice and cutting deep. Fresh ooze covers the blade of his axe, and the creature roars angrily.

Up in the air nearby, Gareth determindly suffers the blade barrier in order to get his cuts into the crowned lich.
(David - reflex save DC21 or 48 damage)
Max's mental song of battle starts to gather momentum and glee as the sword connects both times. Bits of bone start to splinter and drop toward the fractured ground below.

Suddenly, both the lich and Gareth are surrounded by complete and utter darkness as Tericus's spell goes into effect.
Looking up, Clangden and Tericus will be able to see a 20ft diameter black blob, just hovering in the air, and above that, the occasional tiny spark of life, zipping past at lightning speed, regardless of the chaos below.

Further down the path, Torel is creating a windwall in an attempt to blow away the incendiary cloud. Wisps of smoke start to trail off and dissipate.
((I got a 26 on the spell resistance roll, John which overcomes Jus's 21))

Beyond it, Nonam, Jus and Addinein battle the other lich which flashes into visibility.
The red and black gloom is brought startlingly to life as lightning arcs from both Nonam and Jus toward the lich holding the floating prisoner.
Both arcs however appear to pass through the creature harmlessly and shimmer off into the distance.
However, the hideous thing is spitting mad after taking damage from the disintegration spell, Addinein's bolt and a singed tattered robe from the magic missile.

"Stop!" it hisses, "kill me and she falls and dies!"
Then it's voice softens into a croon. "You'll wake her. We had to make her sleep, and keep her away from our touch... fragile, she is. Perhaps we'll take you too. Keep you safe, until we - ah but that would be telling wouldn't it..."
It appears to fall into a maddened cackle for a moment before steeling itself and hurling forth another spell.

For a moment, nothing happens - then the ground beneath the group begins to shake and move. Cracks start to appear, and Woldsblood begins to flow, to fill in the gaps.
The ground starts to become treacherous and the effect begins to spread upward toward the other combatants.

Back up north, Clangden's opponant slashes back viciously, failing to get through the dwarf's armour.

The lich in the darkened sphere lashes out in an attempted touch attach, missing Gareth in this instance.

Nonam has no problem avoiding stepping in a pool of Woldsblood (concentration 31), and he shrieks back at the lich, "I'm going to turn your rotten corpse into ash!" He howls a bit too wildly and casts some more.

A bit of sanity for a moment, and Nonam shouts, "Tericus catch her." The mage casts limited wish, "I wish the Overlord was in Tericus' arms."

If the wish works, Nonam follows with a second spell thanks to the boots of speed. Reverse gravity in a column beneath the lich. Aimed just about right to send a column of woldsblood straight up at the thing.

If the wish doesn't work, he casts magic missile while he thinks of something else. (15dmg)

Gareth and Max strike and strike again in the blackness - Max's enthusiasm in Gareth's mind is approaching sheer delirium until - the sword abruptly swishes through empty air.

Down below, Clangden's axe makes short work of the blue creature. His song rings out amidst the chaos of lightning, fire and howls of pain and anger. The thing drops with a thud, and then strangely enough - disappears.

Suddenly, out of the black sphere drops a bag of bones in tattered clothing which lands with a clatter on the ground near the dwarf. The skull carries a crown, and a practiced eye will note the gems encrusted on it. Also there is a box-shaped amulet around its neck.

Clangden will also note that he is surrounded by a wide stream of Woldsblood and is cut off from the others.

The ground shaking and parting leaves Addinein and Jus little choice but to hang on and dodge the small fractures opening beneath their feet. The song of death grows ever stronger. Things are becoming very unstable, including their fellow Nonam, they will note, who continues to hurl abuse and spells with reckless abandon.

In a bizarre turn of events, Tericus suddenly finds his arms holding a slender female human. He may note that she is still asleep, and that her clothes are ragged, and her feet torn and bloody from running. However - he has a more immediate problem to worry about - for attached to her wrist is a rope, and at his feet, at the other end of the rope lying on the ground - is a lich.

It looks up with its glowing pits for eyes, and with a mad cackle and a babble of arcane - makes a grab for him, missing (dang).

DM Jan

Pummelled by spells, the deafening power of Alemi, and multiple arrows - the lich stops moving, and the red glow in its eyes gradually fades to nothing.
After all the noise of battle, the surroundings seem eerily quiet. The ground has settled, riddled with small fissures, and the Overlord appears to be stirring.

Over on his little island, Clangden examines the crown and the amulet. The crown is heavily encrusted with jewels and looks to be worth a considerable sum. As for the amulet, within its design is what looks like a tiny, locked box.

Torel's stony eyes sweep the surroundings.
"I think it's time we got out of here. It's not over yet if we dawdle," he says, glancing at Nonam, Jus and Addinein.

Walking over to the edge of the 5ft wide stream that separates Clangden from everyone else, he rubs his chin.
"Okay - we need to get you back over here somehow."

Nonam
Friday January 10th, 2003 1:41:51 PM

Nonam frowns at the lich's remains and deactivates his boots of speed. He really wanted to blast it again and mumbles to himself, "Could use burning hands and fry it to a cinder. I did promise to turn him to ash. He's not ash. Need to make him ash. Little gray ashes that could float in the wind. Float. Float away. Floating ash."
As he mumbles, he gives the carcasse a quick once over with the detect magic to see if it had any goodies. If it does, the wizard takes them prior to pushing the body into the Woldsblood. "Hey the woldsblood. Did you see the big ball? I wonder why it did that? That was really something. We really should take some to study."

Nonam pulls one of the vials that he emptied out earlier and moves closer to one of the streams with a mad look in his eye.

Addinein
Friday January 10th, 2003 3:00:14 PM

With the immediate danger of the lich's evaporated Addinein realize that something is calling to him. Looking around the landscape his eyes inevitably come to rest on the Woldsblood. Staring at the stream, Addinein doesn't realize what is calling to him........

Tericus
Friday January 10th, 2003 4:59:40 PM

"Gareth, get those two over here with me!" Tericus says to Gareth while he continues to hold the Overlord. "They're going to do something stupid!" then Tericus casts Stonewall right up on the bed of the Woldsblood so that Nonan, Addinein, or anyone else can actually see the stuff

Gareth
Friday January 10th, 2003 6:32:45 PM

Not caught up by its allure, the warrior races over to Nonam and Addinein and gets between them and the Woldsblood (If he can't do both he focuses on Nonam as he scares him more). "Gents, we need to get the Overlord back now. We can always come back later but right now we have to finish our job!". He will tackle Nonam if he tries to get the stuff.

Jus
Monday January 13th, 2003 10:21:47 AM

Jus starts to head over to the group, but is unable to find a path free from the Woldsblood. He nods distractedly to Nonam, when he mentions collecting the blood.

Monday January 13th, 2003 1:23:48 PM

Right before he kicks the lich's bones into the stream, Nonam discovers a pair of bracers and a small gold box on an ornate, jeweled leather wrist strap.

Tericus and Gareth move fast, blocking the path as their wild eyed wizard starts for the Woldsblood stream along with a distracted Addinein. Jus also seems to be having difficulty concentrating and negotiating the fractured ground.

Still stranded for the moment, Clangden has a crack at opening the tiny little box on the amulet. With his natural strength it shouldn't be a problem - however, try as he might - the stubborn object refuses to budge, even after his best effort.
Quite a pretty thing really, well polished, good craftsmenship. It obviously took some making - but what could be so important inside, that it should be made so strong?

Just then, the Overlord wakes up proper, starts wriggling like an eel and lashing out with her sore feet, until she begins to recognise a few faces.
"What's happening?" she pleads, close to tears. "Have they gone? What is this awful place?"

The big undead hunter attempts to get everyone organised.
"Let's get your dwarven warrior off that islet, and get the heck out of here," he growls. "We've a bit of a march before I can shift us all accurately out of this realm."

He steps across a few fissures and attempts to herd Jus closer to the others.

Tericus
Monday January 13th, 2003 4:59:01 PM

"They're gone." Tericus tells the Overlord. "Dont worry, your safe. We're leaving as soon as we get Clangden off that island."

Nonam
Monday January 13th, 2003 5:41:45 PM

Nonam pockets the bracers and the box for later study. Satisfied that he has at least something to study when he gets home, he eyes Gareth and Tericus, "I'll study up on the stuff in the library at home then. Now, I'm going to go help Clangden, so don't tackle me."

Nonam casts a good sized Wall of Force flat on the ground to give Clangden a bridge over the woldsblood. "All right, Clangden, you've got a bridge out even though you can't see it. You can feel it with your axe though. So, step on up, and let's go."

Once that's done he tries to reason with Tericus, "I could cast an unseen servant spell that would take the vial to the stream, dip it in, and securely cap it. It would even wipe off any excess before it brought it back to me. I'm not going to drink the stuff or anything like that, and I'm not going to run the risk of having Gareth push me in while trying to keep me out of it. But, a small amount could be incredibly useful for study. Think of what we could learn."

Gareth (50% Displaced)
Monday January 13th, 2003 9:41:02 PM

"Nonam, we don't know anything about this stuff other than it is messing with your mind and the guy over there who tends to creep everyone out is scared of it. I'd say you'd better learn more before you try and collect some. We have the Overlord and have killed the liches. What would it say about us if we got greedy and failed to save her? You can get this stuff later after we get her out of here. We have what we need from a place we know nothing about. Let's go...".

The warrior helps get everyone ready to go. He makes sure Clangden gets across if Nonam comes to his senses.

As the others talk and distract Addinein from his thoughts. He shakes his head as if to clear his mind and realizes that it's time to get going. Doing his best to help the others Addinein decides to submerge himself in getting ready to get out of this place.

Clangden
Tuesday January 14th, 2003 12:26:57 PM

standing up, he pops the crown in his bag and puts the amulet in his pocket. hefting his axe on his shoulder he struts across the river on the wall of force, muttering, bout time you decided to get me off there, thought I was gonna haveta go swimming. think that would've been a bad bad idea. stepping up next to Torel he quips: ok dippy, take us to your gate.

DM Jan
Tuesday January 14th, 2003 4:19:11 PM

"If someone can heal my feet a little, then perhaps I can walk. I'd hate to be a burden if we have a long journey ahead," says the Overlord.

Torel stares at Clangden for a moment and then barks out a laugh, before setting a fairly brutal pace, this time in the opposite direction to the flow of the streams.

During the march, the Overlord tries to remember what happened.

"It all happened so fast. One moment I was over by the table, pouring a drink, talking to Byron about some problem he had, and the next - it all disappeared, and there was this..... place, and those horrible creatures. I kicked of my shoes and ran, but I obviously wasn't fast enough. What happened to Byron - is he safe? I can't thank you all enough - you saved me from those... 'things'. I know I was going to die in some horrible manner."

By the time Torel is satisfied that he can plane shift everyone safely back, another 8 hours have passed. Here the streams are back to the size of small rivulets, the surrounding scene more black than red. On the journey, the occasional tottering undead has to be dealt with, and Jus, Nonam and this time Addinein, lose another Wisdom point. It has been wearing and physically exhausting for everyone.

"Alright," says the tall undead hunter, bringing everyone to a halt on a fairly wide path. "Stay together, and pray - this isnt an exact science."
He finishes his sentence with a cackle that suggests that he's madder than Nonam, Jus and Addinein put together.

"Are we ready?"

The warrior watches Nonam closely prepared for about anything seeing his unstable disposition. "Just hang on Nonam we're almost there...". He helps with the Overlord if necessary but he focuses his attention solely on the powerful mage, doubting it will do any good if he completely goes off his rocker.

DM Jan
Wednesday January 15th, 2003 9:23:26 PM

"Those who have suffered here will require the solace of the Temple of Gargul. There they will recover what they have lost," states the undead hunter solemnly.
He then bows his head.
"May the mighty Gargul, the God of Gods, keeper of life and death, grant us safe passage from this realm."

The mist that swirls beneath Torel's cloak shifts outward, curling around everyone's feet, rising, getting thicker - until the surrounding landscape is completely obscured.
It is followed by a sharp, chill wind that pinches the skin and flutters cloak and clothing...

Suddenly, there is a warm brightness coming from a window. The air smells fresh, and there are sounds of celebration beyond closed doors.

For those who's souls the Woldsblood attempted to claim - there is an abrupt silence. All that power, potential, seduction, glory, certainty - has been replaced by nothing - leaving a dark, empty cavern in their minds.

The immediate scene is familiar, with a slight change.
The group now stands in the same Palace anteroom they left all those long hours ago. As for what has changed -

When the group had left to enter the Shadowlands, the man named Byron was laid unconscious on the ground, being tended to by a Merchant level representative. A Trash Level rep had left to find a healer.

Now - the Merchant man is collapsed on the ground in a massive pool of blood. Crouched over him are the Trash level man and what looks like a cleric of Alemi, dressed in white.
The Overlord gasps in horror.

The two crouched men turn as you all arrive.
"That was fast!" exclaims Trash man, blinking with astonishment.

Of Byron, there is no sign.

Tericus

Jus is consumed by a great emptyness (missed WI roll). He fights the feelings, shoving them down into himself. His eyes mist, like he just lost a deep friend, a dear lover. (made INT roll) He chides himself, for he knows he's too smart to be overtaken by the Woldsblood, but he wants, no, he desires to hear those voices again.

Seeing the blood on the floor, Jus' heart leaps for joy. Yet he can't hear the voices... Silly, stupid Jus, you're by yourself again. This is dead blood; without life.

Pulling his arrows out again, one at a time, Jus checks them over with hopes that a drop of Woldsblood came back with him.

Gareth
Thursday January 16th, 2003 10:21:54 PM

"Where's Byron and what happened to this guy?" Gareth asks.

DM Jan
Friday January 17th, 2003 1:06:42 AM

The bloody pool on the floor is a poignant reminder of the raw power and heady allure of Wold Magic. But there are no whispers here, instead there is a heady scent of sweetness and iron.

This blood soaks into the soles of Tericus's boots as he approaches the fallen man. It's a mess. The Overlord looks about to pass out.

The other cleric is crouched with blood-soaked hands, attempting to heal a savage knife wound across the injured man's throat. Tericus's Heal spell begins to close the wound and brighten the man's pallor.
The other cleric leans back and gives a sigh of relief.
"That was close," he croaks.

The Trash Level rep stands and approaches Gareth and Clangden, his eyes showing relief at being able to turn his back on the gore.
"I don't understand," he explains. "I've only been gone about 10 minutes. I found a cleric - just like you told me to, and we came running back, only to find.... this! I don't know where Byron is. We didn't see him out in the corridor. I really don't understand."
The man looks confused.
"I'm just glad your quest was achieved within minutes, and you managed to bring our Overlord back to safety. Evil was here today, the likes of which I've never seen before. I'm just a simple man. I handle trash. I'm glad you're back because you'll know what to do."

Meanwhile, Torel has a word with Nonam, Jus and Addinein.
"You did well back there," says the Undead Hunter. "I've seen Woldsblood rip a man's mind to shreds in a fraction of the time you all had to endure it. The Shadowlands are deadly. I fully expected to lose at least one of you, no matter how much I tried to stop you. It is a testament to your strength that it did not happen.
"However, it is important that you accompany me to the Temple - the sooner the better. Woldsblood is like a harsh mistress who would stab a knife in your back if you tried to leave her."

At that moment, the newly healed merchant comes to his senses.
"... was trying to help him, and he stabbed me. Stabbed me with his damned knife...." he gasps.

Nonam
Friday January 17th, 2003 11:25:24 AM

Nonam mutely nods his head at Torel. He looks as confused as the recently healed merchant.

Gareth
Friday January 17th, 2003 1:30:55 PM

The warrior's hackles raise high at the pronouncement that Byron murdered this guy and was clearly involved in the abduction. "Which way did he go? We need to get him quick!" Once the information is given he activates his boots of flying, fires up his ring of invisibility, and instantly goes after him. "Didn't like the guy anyway..." He asks Max if he heard Byron say anything in his mind about where he might escape to.

Tericus
Sunday January 19th, 2003 6:12:24 PM

Before Gareth rushes off, Tericus says, "Gareth, half of us are in no condition for a fight. It would just be me, you, and Clangden. We need to regroup, then go after him. In the morning I can Scry his location."

Jus  d20=10 d20=1
Monday January 20th, 2003 2:04:57 AM

Jus wakes at the words of battle. "The rest of us can fight! We've done it before, we'll overcome our distractions again."

There's something in Jus' eyes that betray his words. Jus is fighting an internal struggle between what he hopes is true and what he knows. He battles the hope that by spilling Byron's blood, he may somehow find the Woldsblood again -- for he opened the door in the first place, right?

Addinein
Monday January 20th, 2003 10:07:54 AM

Not sure what to say or do Addinein just stands there. His emotions roil as he considers Torel's words and then Gareth's call to arms.

Eventually some logic appear to win out as Addinein sputters, "If you woke up after the Overlord was forcibly abducted and someone was leaning over you, would you possibly react any differently not knowing what was going on? I can at least understand his reaction if he explains himself that way. He could be trying to locate the Overlord if no one told him that we were trying to rescue her?"

DM Jan
Monday January 20th, 2003 7:47:34 PM

As the merchant gets to his feet with the help of the other cleric, the Overlord tries her best to overcome her shock.

"We've only been away for a short time?" she asks. "Very well, the few people who know about this, the better. For the sake of the City, I ask you all to keep this to yourselves. If we carry on as if nothing ever happened, then whoever is behind this - has failed miserably, and they'll know it. Let them wallow in their failure."

To the Storms she says -
"I owe you my life, and the City owes you an even bigger debt. Because of you we have shown strength and resistance. They'll think twice before they try that again."

With a sigh -
"I need to get cleaned up, and get back out there. We have politicians from all levels and other cities. I have to show my face. When the celebrations are over, I would very much like to talk to you all, and perhaps discuss security. Your suggestions would be invaluable."

After making sure the merchant is alright, and getting assurances from Torel that Nonam, Jus and Addinein will be well cared for, the Overlord hobbles off, her hands trembling slightly after the ordeal.

During the discussion about the missing Byron, with Tericus's pragmatism hopefully holding sway, and Addinein presenting another viewpoint - Max chips in, cutting through Gareth's anger.

~ That one - can't sense him, I think he's gone, but know this. You may not like him, but he hates you. That gives him the edge, so beware.~

Torel suggests the sooner Jus, Nonam and Addinein accompany him to the Temple, the better it will be. He see's only too well the damage done.
He holds open the door.
"There's a back way - and my temple is less than 100 yards away. Do not fear, you will be taken good care of."

As for Tericus, Gareth and Clangden - what next?

Jus absent mindedly slices his palm with a dagger. He stands quiet, concentrating on the blood dripping from his hand, trying to hear the voices again.

DM Jan
Wednesday January 22nd, 2003 11:53:59 AM

It seems that Byron has managed to give everyone the slip - for now. As to where he might have slipped off too, well - that might take some detective work.

Torel takes those with battered psyches to the local Temple of Gargul. If Tericus accompanies them, he will be assured that Jus, Nonam and Addinein will be well looked after.

However, convalescence is no picnic, and it takes a few days. Addinein is released after 24 hours, Jus and Nonam two days after that.
Healing, remembering a 'normal' life - letting it fill the empty chasm of longing left by Woldsblood's influence. The process is laced with confusion and powerful flashes of nightmare, that threaten to take the mind right back to where it started in the healing process.

It leaves it's mark, depending on the individual.
Maybe a fascination for, or aversion to blood; the occasional potent nightmare; a tendancy to be morbid; a few grey/white hairs; a dislike of clerics of Gargul and Gargul in general, or maybe a love or fascination for them; on a very very rare occasion - perhaps in the midst of a powerful dream, pale grey smoke rises from their boots; a look in the eye that suggests their owner has stared death in the face for many hours....

In the meantime -
As Gareth, Tericus and Clangden return to the Mansion, they find a very puzzled Mitchum, who has the black parrot sat on his left shoulder.

"I trust the celebration went smoothly," he says with a long suffering glance at the parrot. "Not long after you left, I recieved a rather odd letter. An offer to purchase the mansion, no less. They offer a reasonable price, but I wasn't under the impression you wanted to sell."
He is obviously completely unaware of what happened up at the Palace.

The letter is written on crisp, expensive parchment, the lettering is exquisite - beautifully done. It is headed by a crest - a black dragon rampant, and is signed by a Lady Delores Solara.

He also tells them that the items found during the forest expedition are laid out in the room normally kept for these things.

((Don't forget, there are some items from this trip too that will need investigation. I'll try and get a list together, along with a picture of the item found in that strange creature's grasp.))

Gareth
Wednesday January 22nd, 2003 7:24:30 PM

After making sure his friends make it to the temple and resigning himself to the fact that he cannot get to Byron, he makes his way back to the house. He inquires with the Overlord about where she discovered this - Byron. "So the Black Dragons want to purchase our house do they? Well perhaps we can pay them a visit and discuss terms...". A sly smile crosses the warrior's face.

Gareth makes sure the items get identified and the location of Lady Delores is discovered.

Tericus
Thursday January 23rd, 2003 3:25:30 AM

"While you find out about our mysterious buyer, ill study the items we've found recently." Tericus tells Gareth as he gathers everything they aquired n the Shadowlands. Then he goes into the room where everything else is laid out and begins to study the items in question.

Nonam
Thursday January 23rd, 2003 11:33:09 AM

After plucking out all his new grey hairs, Nonam walks over and reads the letter for himself. While reading he asks, "Mitchum, do you know anything about the Lady Delores Solara?"

Clangden
Thursday January 23rd, 2003 12:09:09 PM

goes into the room where the stuff is laid out, and adds the jeweled crown and amulet to the booty. smiling weakly he leaves and heads upstairs to his room, where he strips and goes about getting a bath. a few hours later, he returns downstairs, dressed in fresh clothing, he heads for the lounge where he asks Mitchum politely for a tankard of the good stuff. and he sits there, waiting til everyone returns and a decision is made as to their next action.

Addinein
Friday January 24th, 2003 12:42:18 AM

Addinein is not sure how he should feel as he receives his deprogramming.

DM Jan
Friday January 24th, 2003 12:54:30 AM

Mitchum doesn't hesitate as the question is asked about the Lady Solara.
"The letter came from Black Dragon Castle, I'm sure of it," he says. "So perhaps that is where she is staying. I heard she was very rich, but other than that - there is little gossip to be had about her from the City's servant population. A bit of a mystery, it would seem."

As for the booty -

There is an axe, a ring, an amulet, a small metal box on a leather strap, a pair of bracers, a bow, and a rather splendid gold crown inset with rubies. Over the next few days the following is determined -

Axe - masterwork +2
Ring - of elemental resistance ( minor)
Long Bow - mighty composite, up to +3 STR bonus
Crown - worth approx 15,000gp
Bracers - of armor +3

Both the small metal box and the amulet cause Tericus some distress when he touches them. They feel unclean, with a power that appears to be growing every time he goes near.

Mitchum explains that he has sent some of the silk unwound from the cocoons brought back from the jungle to a small gnome lady he knows in the City who spins and weaves fabric.
"Time will tell if she can make anything of interest from it," he says. "As for this -"

He points at the strange object that Nonam prized out of the dead jungle creature's hands.

"- I soaked it in a bucket of water for a few minutes. It seemed to revive the plant inside, although how water managed to pass to the inside of the item, I don't really know. But now the plant holds fruit, you can see if you look close."

(pic of magic item in email)

Tericus
Friday January 24th, 2003 3:09:54 AM

"That chest and amulet are evil." Tericus says to the others. "Ive heard of liche's keeping their soul or whatever they have in containers in case their body is destroyed. I think that the box houses the soul and the amulet will channel it. So whatever you do, dont put the amulet on! The only problem is that I dont think we can destroy it." then he tells them about the other items. "Nothing real powerful, but its all useful. If no one minds id like to have the ring and the bracers, but if someone else wants them ill be happy to give them up." then he goes over and looks at the four prong tree wand. "Well, what does this do?"

Jus
Friday January 24th, 2003 9:43:10 AM

"Please don't tell me anyone is interested in selling to the Black Dragons. I still remember their foul stench."

When he sees the treasures, Jus is impressed. "This plant is cool! Anyone have ideas what it was used for? Where did you get it again?"

Nonam
Friday January 24th, 2003 11:52:33 AM

Nonam casts identify on the amulet and box to see what he makes of them.

"I need a little cash for spells, anybody mind if I trade in that crown? I don't need the full value, so I can pick up some items for the group too while I'm in the Catacombs. Just tell me what you want."

Clangden
Friday January 24th, 2003 12:30:51 PM

when all are there, determining the what and value of the items, Clangden just sits there and watches, and of course, drinks. when Nonam talks about heading to the Catacombes, Clangden invites himself, with Nonamīs approval saying: I need to get a few items there too.

and then heads out, with Nonam, to the catacombes.

Gareth
Saturday January 25th, 2003 10:36:01 AM

The warrior looks over the take and shrugs. "Not a lot here I'm interested in so I'll defer my choice for next time. Maybe some of the cash so I can upgrade my equipment at some point in the future but that's it. Leave me a share of whatever is left after we reoutfit, nothing more.". He sits and muses a moment. "I suppose it should not suprise us that the Black Dragons are trying to buy the place. If they were trying to wipe us out then I think they are just wanting to get rid of any traces left over so that we are forgotten quickly. Tericus, perhaps we should go find Byron now. You say you can scry for him?".

Addinein
Monday January 27th, 2003 11:21:45 AM

"I could help with the scrying also if needed."

"Should we investigate and see if there is any kind of connection to the Black Dragons from this recent attack? Is there more to know of them?"

DM Jan
Monday January 27th, 2003 7:01:30 PM

Mitchum adds something else.

"One thing I did hear. Black Dragon Castle has been on minimum staff for a long time, while most of the owners were away, but a friend of mine has recently been given employment there at a reasonably high level. He tells me there is furniture being moved in, and there are walls being painted. Might be worth a visit, if you're in the neighbourhood."

Nonam's identify confirms Tericus's suspicions - the amulet (which contains a small compartment) and the small gold box on a leather strap, would appear to be the two liches' phylactories. They are still growing in power.

As for the clear, pronged thingy with the tiny plant inside - it sits there on the table top, awaiting inspection.

OOC - guys, we're currently in transition between modules, but we've a lot of loose ends to mop up.
The liches will regenerate in a certain number of days, and no I'm not telling you when.
The treasure needs sorting out.
A scry might give you some info about the wherabouts of ole' Byron.
I'd encourage you also to discover more about the Black Dragons current situation and the jungle magic item.

Also - we need to get these Adventurers Repose things finished for everyone, and XPs and character sheets organised.

The next module will start on Monday.

Tericus
Monday January 27th, 2003 8:43:44 PM

seeing that no one objects to him taking the bracers and the ring, Tericus puts on the two items. then he turns to Gareth and says. "Sure, I can scry him. It will be alot easier if I have something of his though, and ill have to go to the temple of Alemi in order to use their scrying pool. I can also ask them what to do about those two liche's." then, if no one asks him to do anything else, Tericus goes over to the temple and makes preperations to do the scrying.(jan, what kind of element does the ring resist?)

Jus
Tuesday January 28th, 2003 10:03:01 AM

Jus starts examining the plant, touching, looking, trying to fathom how it came to being.

Taking the prongs in hand one at a time, Jus gives the colored tips a light squeeze to see if the plant reacts. He then takes two tips, one in each hand, and gently squeezes them.

"When whomever did the detect magic, what type of magic did they see here?" Jus asks Nonam.

Clangden
Tuesday January 28th, 2003 10:22:58 AM

i'm still in the catacombes, will resume posting in the castle when i'm done.

Nonam
Tuesday January 28th, 2003 1:02:11 PM

"Oops. Should have thrown those into the woldsblood. I have an idea on how to destroy them. I just need something from the Catacombs." He takes the crown and heads for the door.
He turns and looks at Jus and says, "You know, plants really aren't my thing. What happened to that druid fellow that was followed us around out there?"

Gareth
Tuesday January 28th, 2003 9:40:07 PM

The warrior shrugs. "I'd say we need to destroy the liches first.".

DM Jan
Wednesday January 29th, 2003 12:02:50 AM

(Sam, it's resistance from fire)

Tericus prepares to scry the whereabouts of Byron. Although he doesn't have anything belonging to the man, at least he's met him and knows what he looks like.

Has Nonam figured out how to destroy the phylactories?

Clangden goes shopping.

Jus's examination of the strange magic item reveals that the outer surface is hard and clear - like glass, and that the curled prongs/tines are curved in a peculiar design, which perhaps makes him wonder why they are designed that way.
What would happen for instance if one of the tines was struck sharply with a small solid object?

Mitchum approaches Gareth and Addinein.
"This friend of mine, I could ask him to spy, although it might be dangerous...."

Addinein
Wednesday January 29th, 2003 2:18:58 AM

Looking at Gareth to try to follow his lead, Addinein is not sure what to say to Mitchem about his friend.

"Do you think the clerics of Gargul would be able to take care of this, or do we not have enough time for that?"

Tericus  d20+13=30
Wednesday January 29th, 2003 8:19:52 AM

prepared as he's going to be, Tericus looks into the temple's scrying pool and casts his Scry spell, searching for the whereabouts of Byron(scry check of 30, +8 for skill check and +5 for knowing what Byron looks like)

Clangden
Wednesday January 29th, 2003 10:35:53 AM

returning from shopping he exclaims, my axe is being worked on and will be available for pick up in 2 days hence. so, asking Gareth, what's on the agenda now?
seeing them holding the amulet with the Lich's essence in it he claims: we need to take that to the Temple of Alemi right this instant, and let them do their mojo on it before the Lich reforms.
grabbing the amulet, Clangden runs as fast as his little legs will take him to the Temple of Alemi. holding the amulet in front of him like a piece of tainted jewelry. getting there, he rushes up to the head Priest, tells him what the item is, where it was aquired, and hands it over to him for a proper destruction.

Nonam
Wednesday January 29th, 2003 11:41:27 AM

Watching the dwarf run past him out the door, "Well, I guess we can try Clangden's way of destroying them. I was going to pick up a bag of holding in the Catacombs, drop them inside, and then rip the bag. I really think Jus would have liked that."

Jus
Wednesday January 29th, 2003 9:22:24 PM

"Oooo, yeah. Would've been cool," Jus says before he returns his attention to the plant.

Pulling out a dagger, he taps the purple tip with the blunt end. If nothing happens, Jus increases the frequency and force -- but never enough that he thinks it may damage the plants... encasing.

DM Jan
Thursday January 30th, 2003 1:46:04 AM

Clangden dashes off with the nasty phylacteries, and just in time, manages to get them to the local temple where they are destroyed, not a moment too soon.

Tericus concentrates on his scry spell.
In the temple font, he sees water - rapids, threatening to overturn a boat containing two men, one of which is definitely Byron. There is a feeling of exhilaration and fear on their faces, and movement at a tremendous rate.

Back at the mansion, while the group ponders its next move, Jus strikes the purple edged tine of the mysterious jungle item.
The sound vibrates, resonates and builds - it is quite pleasant, and then it fades to nothing.
Suddenly, about 5 feet away - a crack in the stone floor appears. Something begins to grow - eventually becoming a small shrub, about a foot high, with long, slender purple leaves.

Jus will note that one of the small berries on the tiny plant within the object has just shrivelled and died.

Tericus
Thursday January 30th, 2003 8:59:57 AM

"Gotcha." Tericus says as he looks into the pool. he figures that Byron has left the city and is traveling along the river we traveled earlier, but he tries to figure out which direction he's traveling, and he tries to get a closer look at Byron's companion

Nonam
Thursday January 30th, 2003 9:19:01 AM

"Um, Jus, maybe you should do that outside next time."

Clangden
Thursday January 30th, 2003 12:58:39 PM

returning from the Temple, Clangden reenters the room where everyone is.
rubbing his hands like he is trying to rid dirt off them, he claims: well, the item is no more, and by what the Priest says, none to soon.
hearing Tericus exclaiming that he gotcha, he walks over, looking into a bowl of ordinary water, says: now that you got him, maybe you should use some soap on that face, would greatly improve the look.
(smiles)

Jus
Thursday January 30th, 2003 8:43:35 PM

"Actually," Jus says with a great big grin, "How 'bout I take over one of the lower rooms and make ourselves a garden?"

Examining the new purple plant, Jus adds, "Of course, we should figure out what each of the four plants do before I use up all the berries."

Jus examines the new purple plant and attempts to decipher it's purpose (besides being a plant).

DM Jan
Friday January 31st, 2003 1:16:10 AM

Concentrating a little further on the scry, Tericus gleans a little more information - whichever direction the two men were heading - it was down stream, and - more importantly - ahead appeared to have a small sliver of blue sky amidst the ever present thick cloud in this particular area. A shaft of sunlight was breaking through like a ray of pure gold.
As for the other man - he looked older than Byron. His dark hair was greying at the temples, and his shoulders were not as broad.
The sunlight in the image seemed to distort the surface of the water in the font, until it became too difficult to read.

Back at the mansion, Clangden is greeted by a long string of dwarven abuse, gleefully called out by the parrot, who was perched on a high curtain rail watching the goings on.

Mitchum tries not to wince as the perfectly clean floor in the room cracks and the plant rises from it.
"It is my impression, Master Addinein," he says in answer to the dark elf's question, " that the priests of Gargul tend not to get involved with anything outside their realm of expertise."
He then pauses, raises an eyebrow, excuses himself and leaves, as though he has been silently called somewhere else.

In the meantime, Jus's further examination of the plant yields the following results -
There are five long, slender purple leaves on this particular plant, and eventually, as he gets around to tasting one of the leaves - he experiences a small but powerful jolt of wellbeing - not unlike that experienced when drinking a healing potion, or being healed by an experienced cleric (Cure Mod).
The leaves look perishable and not particularly long-lasting.
Within the object, although one of the berries has shrivelled, there are still a few more at that particular corner near the purple tine. Some berries look larger than others.

Mitchum returns with apologies for his absence, and tells the group that a messenger from the Overlord has arrived, politely requesting the group's presence tomorrow morning at the Palace.
"Shall I tell him, you'll be there?" he asks.

((OOC - my apologies, guys - I'm going to be away now until Sunday night.))

Clangden
Friday January 31st, 2003 1:43:23 PM

patting Tericus' shoulder, Clangden goes up to the Parrot and teaches it some new words, then, reaches into a bowl on the table near the perch, and feeds it some grubs.

upon hearing the summons, Clangden wanders over to where everyone else is and says: well, if we are gonna go, lets make sure we have ALL of our gear with us, in case we get sucked into yet another adventure.

and with that said, he goes up stairs and begins retrieving ALL of his gear, including armor and weapons. mumbling as he goes "can't we ever have a full days rest, I have some beer aging, and I hate aged beer"

Gareth

Tericus watches Bryon and his companion a bit longer. he looks for anything that might identify what skill the older man might have(spell book, holy symbol, weapons, armor, ect). then when they approach the beam of sunlight he widens the view a bit to see if anything happens

Nonam
Monday February 3rd, 2003 11:38:59 AM

The wizard trots off to study.

DM Jan
Monday February 3rd, 2003 11:10:13 PM

((OOC - Todd, I have no idea what you told Jerry, but it must have been convincing! ;)
Okay lads, it looks like we're back in business, and thanks everyone for getting your Repose entries in.))

Mitchum nods curtly and disappears to tell the messenger what Gareth said.
The evening starts to draw in, and the group prepares, each in his own way, wondering what tomorrow will bring.
Perhaps the Overlord is merely seeking advice, or maybe Clangden is right - and another adventure is lying in wait - ready to pounce.
Whatever awaits the group - preparation certainly never did anyone any harm.

The following morning arrives, as hazy pale grey light begins to wash through the levels.
The smell of breakfast wafts upstairs, along with sounds of some kind of commotion at the back door - it appears that one of the delivery men (who understands a little dwarven) has been told to " **** off and take his brother with him", by a bird perched just inside the kitchen door.

Jus
Wednesday February 5th, 2003 2:41:34 AM

Jus awakes and joins his friends for breakfast. The time passes too soon before the parrot tries out the new words Clangden taught it.

"I have to say," Jus laughes, "Clangden's brought a little more spunk into our home."
