A Friend in Need

Raising the Child, and an Interruption. (DM Matt)
Wednesday February 12th, 2003 11:31:05 AM

The Emerald Talons begin their search for an appropriate cleric to raise the child, but after a bit of investigation, find it might take quite a bit of time to locate one of sufficeint power within the small, rebuilding community. Time being a restraint, they purchase a scroll to acomplish the job, the cleric (Bertram or Milo?) readies himself to begin the spell.

Someone purchase the scroll in the Catacombs, keep it purchased legit and stuff :). Everyone take 4,000gp from the loot (Ill let you handle the 'owed money' amongst yourselves). Ill assume the remainder of the 2000 (after the scroll) is given to the families of those children the Talons had no chance of saving.

Whoever is casting it (I assume Bertram) post your casting, then you'll have to email ACDM Anthony to resolve the 'negotiations'.

The casting begins midafternoon, everyone within their temporary home, waiting for the cleric to finish his petition. A knock at the door startles everyone, except the cleric striving to free the girls soul. Opening the door, its a young human man, almost boy. He has short chopped blonde hair, and an inexperienced look to him. He wears simple clothes, though a shortsword is sheathed at his side. Glancing at those who answer, "I need to speak with K'Nara Illutu." He stumbles with her name slightly, and stands looking between each member, waiting for an answer. K'Nara is visible to him, and he makes no sign of noticing her.

Brother Bertram  d20+4=21
Wednesday February 12th, 2003 8:34:37 PM

Bertram lays a hand upon the child and reads from the prepared scroll, the liquid syllables pouring from somewhere inside him, the strange words surprising even him. He felt a strange warmth coming from the hand laying upon the child's breast. As the words died away he sent a prayer to Domi and Gargul. "Grant me this request God of mine and God of the afterlife, Hear my plea and save this child's life!"

Milo
Wednesday February 12th, 2003 8:56:40 PM

With a look that could stone a basilisk, Milo moves over to where Bertram is preparing to perform the raise dead prayer, and drawing his short sword, turns facing away from the dwarf cleric and his charge, and stands guard over the entire proceedings. "In the name of Pantheon, none shall interrupt these proceedings, so shall I swear." Though the tone is quite serious, the effect is somewhat ceremonial as the halfling Justicar takes a knee and props his short sword, ready for action.

Olana
Thursday February 13th, 2003 2:04:48 AM

Olana raises a finger to her lips as the stranger enters.
'Shhhh.....' she whispers, gesturing for the young man to be still.

((Matt - my apologies, I'm going to be away till Sunday))

Lian
Thursday February 13th, 2003 3:02:13 AM

(Prior to the ritual starting, Lian seemed very curious about the childs body, asking the clerics about vital points and exactly how death occured... he states to his cleric friends that he's very interested in the humanoid form and he's studying it slowly)

Lian watches his friends performing the ritual from a sitting, cross-legged position in the corner of the room. He sits very still, very alert.

Then, as the young man enters, his head snaps over to look at him with a very stony stare, not unlike Milo's.
With a single, fluid movement, Lian is on his feet and at the door to meet the youth. He urges him back out of the room into the hall.
"Quiet young one! All in good time." The monks expression calms and speaks quite low. "I am Lian Siannodel, monk of the Emerald Talons."

Brother Bertram
Thursday February 13th, 2003 2:29:57 PM

Suddenly Bertram begins talking, more mumbling than anything. His body stiffens and sweat breaks out on his forehead. Curiously, he seems to be speaking to someone very emotionally. All the while his hand never leaves the child's breast.

Ingrge
Thursday February 13th, 2003 6:49:14 PM

Watching the raising very quietly, Ingrge raises an eyebrow as the stranger enters and asks for K'nara. Walking up to the young man along with Lian Ingrge takes the other side of the visitor and after Lian introduces himself, Ingrge whispers in the lads ear. " In order to speak with K'nara you must be checked for certain things, so I am going to cast a spell upon you to make sure you are safe. If that is agreeable then nod your head. If you are not agreeable, Know that our leader has a bit of a temper and is very good with that sword."

Maloray
Thursday February 13th, 2003 7:16:35 PM

The half-elf sits on a cot near the Raise Dead process, watching with interest to see if the ceremony is successful, and with more than a little curiosity as to the religious practices of the Westerners.

When the newcomer arrives, Maloray looks up, but the other Talons seem to have the situation well under control, so he remains sitting, albeit splitting his attention between the ceremony and the front door.

ACDM Anthony : The Reserection
Thursday February 13th, 2003 10:51:30 PM

Bertram lays a hand upon the child and reads from the prepared scroll, the liquid syllables pouring from somewhere inside him, the strange words surprising even him. He felt a strange warmth coming from the hand lying upon the child's breast. As the words died away he sent a prayer to Domi and Gargul. "Grant me this request God of mine and God of the afterlife, Hear my plea and save this child's life! Gargul please grant this request for a humble petitioner. The child has worth, if not to the gods, then to the family. The life's cord was cut short by sons of evil. We have taken those lives and offer them to you, Lord, but only you can save this one we plead for. Again please grant this humble plea!"
---------------------------------------------------

You find yourself in a small one room cottage. To the side of the room a straw pallet sits and a savory soup bubbles over the fire. Near the fire, back to you is a large man stirring the soup. Sitting in a huge wooden chair warn to fit the large man is a small being, more troll like than anything else except that he is at the most 2 feet tall. He sits playing with a wooden child's toy humming contentedly until he notices you. Suddenly upon seeing you he leaps up from the chair and runs to your side. Bowing deeply he squeaks. "Master the priest is here." With that he crosses and sits in front of the chair. The large man stands, knees cracking and crosses to the chair, with out sitting he looks you up and down. He is a most normal looking old man except his eyes. His gray eyes look as if all the secrets of the universe have parade in front of them and he has found them beautiful and boring. Finally sitting he sighs and speaks.

"You are here to ask for the life of the girl to be extended. Here you are having used the magic of the universe to travel here and ask this question but I have a question for you. Why should THIS girl above all others be granted more time. What about all the other parents that must bid goodbye every single day to their children? What makes this girl so
special that you wish me to reorder the universe just so she may have more time?"

Drumming his wrinkled fingers on the edge of the chair you see the weathered tattoo of the open eye on the back of his hand.

---------------------------------------------------

Bertram bows then slowly forms a response, letting his mind sort possible answers. "My Lord, I would say that I agree with you about the value of the life of the child. She is probably no more special than any other child born to this world. Her parents have no special pain that another parent would not feel as well, in this I agree with you. With you permission, I would offer a few reasons why I feel that her life, and our requests are worthy. Her life was taken from her with no wrong-doing on her part. While this is not anything new in this world, I do feel it is a circumstance that is truly tragic. I would also offer up that we sent her killers to you within moments of the deed. I would ask that you consider their foul souls in exchange for the life of this one innocent child. Also, while other parents lose children daily, they perhaps did not have someone to appeal to you. At least give the child's case some consideration, for simply the fact we cared enough to ask. If our sorrow at her death has no meaning to you, then at least consider it for our temerity in asking. Boldness in this world does not always bode good intentions but I know that you are able to see that we do this simply to better an already, pain-filled world. I appeal to you to do it, not just because it would make myself and my companions happy, but two heart-broken parents absolutely besides themselves with joy. They did not deserve this to happen to them, no more than the child did." Bertram looks somewhat pale and distraught as he argues his case, he hesitates then the looks the god straight in the eye, a tiny tear sliding down his cheek.

"With your indulgence, God of the Afterlife I have but one other thing to offer for the child's life; My own. If the gods will not save this child because it is a tragic tale that deserves to be retold, then do it for my soul in the place of the child. Surely for a God this is something that can be accomplished. You ask why should she be saved? I believe she deserves it, but I am a simple Dwarf, but as you can see, one with strong convictions and willing to put his life on the line to prove it to you. I know not anything else I may offer Great One, but if it is necessary I will bid my friends farewell and smile doing it,
knowing I saved that child's life."

Bertram bows again signaling he is done and waits for an answer.

----------------------------------------------------------

The Old man leans back looking you up and down for a moment and then in a deep gravely voice and a slight smile says...

"For THAT the deal may be struck.
Your soul is mine."

With lighting fast reflexes he flashes out and grabs your small fist in his huge hands. Looking deep into your eyes you feel the burning of life all through your body, but mostly in your clenched fist. Shivering and shaking the feeling rushes all through out your body. This is what it must be like to die.

Finally the feeling has ended and upon opening your eyes you see the old man leaning back in his chair, ruffling the small creature's hair as it sits and plays on the floor in front of the chair. The gravely voice speaks again.

"See Gimp, he will do fine..."

Things suddenly seem . . . . Balanced . . . . . complete . . . . . . . . . At rest.

The Old Man smiles again and speaks. "You have much to learn, but you have time and I will teach you, after all you are mine now."

Without thinking you stumble out the only thing you can think of...."Am I dead now?"

The Old Man and the small creature stare at you for a moment as if you had suddenly sprouted green warts and then they both suddenly begin laughing. Long, loud, laughs full of the most pure Joy you have ever heard.

"Oh for the love of destiny..... Will you mortals never learn.... What good are you to me dead? If you are on the other side then how will your soul be of any use to me what so ever? I am the God of Life and Death. I am the force keeping the Shadow Realms from eating the Wold alive. I am the way of life and the path of death. I am the gate not the afterlife. This is how you will begin to be of use to me. You will return to the Wold and continue to serve my friend the Noble Domi. You will also serve me. Should you choose to worship me, well that is your choice, but you will do these things.

One you will serve me in all things dealing with life and death. You will suffer no abominations to walk the Wold. The undead, the soul-less, or the troubled.

Two you will suffer none to elongate their natural life spans by magic or other wise unless granted by me.

Three you will educate the people that I am not the afterlife but the gate to that place. I do not keep the souls of the dead but rather make sure that they find their ultimate ending place and that they are given the chance to return in another life should they wish it.

Four, this girl you return with is your responsibility. You have bought her a life, now you must see that she uses it well. That she is educated in all things and that she has all the opportunities she could wish for. You will also see that she learns generosity, kindness, humility, and responsibility. She is your charge, responsibility, pupil and child. In this you will serve me.

Now open your hand and look at my mark and return with the girl.

Opening you hand you see on your palm, the open eye of Gargul tattooed there. Red and staring. Endless. Suddenly you feel your self sucked back into reality and you open your eyes to see all your friends standing about. The girl breathes, once, again, and again. Opening her eyes you see the girl lives, and there on the back of her hand is a new scar. If you turn your head just right it looks like an open staring eye.

Lian
Friday February 14th, 2003 1:21:14 AM

Lian waits outside in the hall with the newcomer and Ingrge.

"It is alright young one. This spell of Ingrges will not harm you." The monk looks at the boy. "There are many that would like to see the Talons fail in all endevours my young friend, it is just a precaution. You have my word, NOTHING unfortunate will happen to you." The glances at his mage companion.

Shes Alive!!! (DM Matt)
Friday February 14th, 2003 1:51:48 AM

The young man nods quietly as several of the talons quiet him, and send him out the door. He obviously seems confused by the defensive nature the talons put up, but complies and listens to their orders. "But K'Nara IS here?" he asks, as he waits in the hallway for Ingrge to cast whatever spell he is readying.

The rest of the talons witness Bertram blink a few times his mind returning to the here and now, just as the young girl gasps, her lungs filling with air and her chest expanding under Bertram's palm.

Im briefly going to lift the one post limit, to expland out and not have to wait to answer questions people might. So while talking to/questioning/torturing? the man, and finishing up with the Raising, posts as you see fit.

Milo  d20+5=15
Friday February 14th, 2003 2:04:30 AM

With a look of joy, Milo jumps up. "HE DID IT!" Then trying to recall what little he knows of religions beyond his own, Milo looks upon Bertram with respect, "To whom were you speaking Bertram? Your lips formed words, but we could not hear them. Tell me of your experience, for I want to understand the ways of the gods better." Milo sheaths his sword, and sits cross-legged, waiting, hoping to learn from the more experienced cleric. (OOC: Made a knowledge - religion check DC 15. Don't think it is enough to be knowledgable in this situation.)

Lian  d20+5=23
Friday February 14th, 2003 7:01:26 AM

The monk hears Milo's exclaimation and peaks back inside.

"Was there a possibility that it would not work?!" He askes inquisitively.

"Oh yes, and K'Nara, the boy would like to speak with you. Do you want to speak with him?" Looking at the boy. (Sense Motive on boy 23)

Ingrge
Sunday February 16th, 2003 4:58:27 PM

seeing that the boy is a bit confused and nervous, tells Ingrge all he needs to know making a few quick motions, Ingrge lets a few small motes of magic light flicker up and over the boys body and then dismisses them. Looking back in, he smiles as the girl moves with life and then looking at his friend, nods. "Bertram my friend, I owe you a few tankards for wht you just did. Thank You."

Brother Bertram
Sunday February 16th, 2003 9:28:05 PM

Bertram looks around, awareness slowly penetrating to his clouded mind. Seeing the child breathing he smiles softly, then turns over the hand that was on the girl and regards the mark there. As he regards it he nods once as if confirming something. Hearing his name called he turns and looks to Milo. At the question his brow furrows. "I spoke to the God Gargul, Milo. He allowed us to stop the girl's soul from passing on. It is truly a miracle. As for what it was like? It was strange beyond the telling, but yet at the same time, the surroundings were most mundane. It was truly strange and wondrous, and yes. even joyous. Let me start at the beginning." Bertram holds the hand of the young child as he begins to relate the story .

(OOC Bertram fill the others in on the conversation with Gargul. He seems uncomfortable speaking of Gargul's requirements of him but does relay the information)

Maloray
Sunday February 16th, 2003 11:53:13 PM

Seeing the girl convulse, her small form drawing air again, her eyes slowly flutter open, Maloray is filled with a deep sense of wonder. What is this power? Where does it come from? The Owl Spirit could never return the dead to life...could he?

Suddenly the half-elf is filled with a deep sense of doubt. What if his father could have been returned to life? Is it possible that he can still be? Is his quest to find his mother a worthy one, given the awesome display he's just seen?

Maloray smiles as the young girl grins weakly at Bertram, but his thoughts are troubled. He turns to size up the stranger, mainly to redirect his thoughts to less confusing matters.

Olana
Monday February 17th, 2003 9:33:42 PM

The elf's blue eyes open wide in astonishment and delight. She knew this was a rare thing, a very rare thing, and oh how this community would be the better for it.

Quietly, she listens as Bertram tells the tale of what happened, biting her lip as Gargul is mentioned. What an experience. Perhaps not one she would particularly relish. This was life and death after all, and to say she was not afraid of dying would have been an utter lie.
Of course there had been a price to pay, and Bertram had been so brave to offer his own life in the matter.

"Whatever the cost," she says eventually, " I think we should help Bertram to shoulder it."

Talkative Child (DM Matt)
Tuesday February 18th, 2003 6:15:50 AM

The young man waits impatiently for the chance to speak with K'Nara, but allows himself to be inspected and subject to whatever spells the wizards deem necessary.

The young girl sits silently holding Bertrams hand as he relays his story, listening intently as he relates the encouynter. "So I was dead?" she asks in amazement. "All I 'member was being with those snakey things, then they dragged me outside. The all of a sudden somefin picked me up, and I was flying. It all went black, then I woke up just a little bit ago."

A little into any discussion, the child starts becoming quite inquisitive, asking all sorts of questions about the group. "So your all really 'venturers? I always wanted to do that when I grow up, but mommy says girls like me aren't supposed to go do that. Me and Becka were learnin anyway, at our secret spot. We were gonna be great venturers some day, even have a magic stick, well I think it is anyway."

She continues to barrage everyone with questions of their adventures, though pestors Olana and K'Nara the most, continually asking how they first started out. She seems almost annoying, but she listens intently and patiently to any answers, trying to absorb whatever information she can.

Milo
Tuesday February 18th, 2003 12:17:10 PM

Milo smiles sadly at the girl, "It looks as though you may get your wish child, though I don't think that you know what you're in for." Milo gets up from his religion lesson, and walks over to gaze momentarily at Olana, taking comfort in her presence. Looking over at the door, "If you witch doctors are done with the lad, perhaps he can speak with K'nara." Milo grins at Ingrge mischieviously, ducking behind Olana with a wink.

Figment
Tuesday February 18th, 2003 9:04:33 PM

The mage stands by, relieved that the ordeal is over for the child and that his failure to save her has been corrected. He decides not to speak to the child but lets Milo do the talking.

Lian
Tuesday February 18th, 2003 10:35:27 PM

When he thinks all is clear, Lian releases the boy and invites him into the room where he can meet K'Nara, leader of the Talons.
The monk silently glides over to his corner and practices his Khata excercises. After awhile he removes the scroll from his pack and begins to study it again, periodically mumbling under his breath.

Brother Bertram
Tuesday February 18th, 2003 10:54:23 PM

Bertram listens to the child and smiles. His smile grows to a full grin seeing the child pester Olana and K'Nara. His smile slightly seeing the stranger.

Urgent Request (DM Matt)  d100=56
Wednesday February 19th, 2003 2:07:29 AM

The young man moves into the room, look over the members of the talons briefly. He glances back and forth between K'Nara and Olana, then after a few moments approaches the human woman.

"Thank goodness I found you. I was skeptical that you would actually be here. I bring an urgent request." Standing up straight, glancing between the other members of the talons quickly, "Oh, forgive me." Positioning himself directly in front of the leader of the talons, he moves his right hand to his side, bringing it forward in a slow circular motion. Clenching his hand into a first before himself, he pulls ito towards himself, placing it against his chest. He looks at K'Nara, awaiting a response.

Ingrge
Wednesday February 19th, 2003 7:12:45 AM

Shaking his head silently at the lad's unbelievable pompasity, and the fact that the lad put himself between K'nara and the rest of the Talons, Ingrge moves around to the lad's left side and mutters "Oh come now, No more delay. Let's get on with it. She won't bite. At least not very hard.

Olana
Wednesday February 19th, 2003 11:22:11 AM

Olana listens to the girls questions, and asks some of her own, in an attempt to discover if the girl is serious or just playing at it.
"Pick a weapon," she offers," whether it be a bow or a spell, you must practice and practice until you can use it in your sleep, for the path you are choosing is fraught with danger."

She stops short, her eyes widening as she notices the boy's hand gesture. Turning to Milo, she wonders if he saw it, too - and registered its meaning.

Milo
Wednesday February 19th, 2003 11:26:39 AM

Milo acknowledges Olana's look with an upturned eyebrow, and he turns his attention toward the lad.

K'Nara
Wednesday February 19th, 2003 12:48:16 PM

The veteran warrior smiled warmly when she saw that Bertram's appeal had been granted. She was rather indulgent with the child and related that her own father had first taught her the art of the blade, as had his friend after her father had died and then an amazing elf called Gemsmith.

K'Nara's attention was then captured by the interruption of the young man--but when he gave the correct signal of the Tines, she gave the countersign and then nodded to him.

"I am K'Nara, and you are in the presence of the Emerald Talons." she confirmed. "We'll be happy to hear what you have to say...as soon as this little one is reunited with her family..." The tall redhead went on to ask Dak if he'd be kind enough to escort the girl back to her parents and let the folks know that the Talons would see the family later, so that arrangements could be made concerning the girl's future.

"Now..." K'Nara spoke to the newcomer after their host had gone to do what she'd asked of him, "...who are you, young sir, and what brings you here..?"

Brother Bertram
Wednesday February 19th, 2003 2:29:22 PM

Bertram stood. "I will take her myself K'Nara. I am sure there is nothing here that I cannot be filled in on later." Bertram keeps hold of her hand and walks for the door, more content to avoid politics, and even more happy to be with his charge.

(OOC-did we get the child's name anywhere along the way and I miss it? Wasnt sure))

The Request details (DM Matt)
Wednesday February 19th, 2003 3:10:41 PM

I assume the child's name was said in her many questions to the party
Bella takes Bertram's hand as she heads toward the door. "You got to come visit me in the morning, I can show you my training spot!" She gives a big wave to everyone, and exits the door, allowing the dwarven cleric to lead her to her home. As she enters the house, the parents are quite emotional as there dead daughter returns, they hadn't had much hope the raise would actually happen. Bertram is thanked many times, and the parents agree when Bertram mentions the Talons will be stopping by in the morning. As K'Nara had requested Dak tell them Bella hugs Bertram saying a good bye, and heads into the home.

Back at the Talon's housing, the young man explains himself. "My names Terran Thulai, I just recently joined the Tines in their cause. I'm here to ask you for your help. About 3 weeks ago, our leader Caden Tremaine was captured by The Hands of Love. Of course, we quickly launched a rescue mission, recovering him from their hold."

Continuing, "Well after that, he changed. He is obsessed with slaying Parnoth, and even began openly speaking of it. Some of us think he was brainwashed or something, but I don't really know. He was relieved of his position, and placed in a safehouse until they could figure out how to cure him. A few nights ago, he vanished from the library he was staying in, and a book detailing the mythical Ish'gara tree open by his bed." Pausing briefly, he continues onto his request, "Its beleived hes seeking this tree to make use of its supposed magical properties. We were hoping you would assist us in bringing Caden back, before we lose track of him, or he gets himself killed attempting his obsession."

Ingrgre
Wednesday February 19th, 2003 7:21:22 PM

Listening to the lad, Ingrge motions in disgust. "I swear that man is captured more often that a group of adventurers called the Misfits, that I once heard of." Quieting down he listens to K'nara's response and questions before adding a few of his own.

Lian
Thursday February 20th, 2003 2:49:37 AM

The monk rarely responds to anything that is said. He continues to study his scroll and meditates awhile. However, he listens to everything that is said about the Tines and The Hands of Love.

"The Hands of Love... that name is familiar. Several of them were killed by Martauos worshippers, were they not?"

K'Nara  d20=4
Thursday February 20th, 2003 12:01:52 PM

The human bladesinger sighed and shook her cauled head.

"Tremaine does, indeed, seem to get himself into more trouble than we do." she commented with a deprecating smile. "However, I don't like that he seems to have changed--especially after having been in the company of the likes of the Hands of Love." She rubbed her chin, as was her habit whenever she was attempting to concentrate.

"The Hands of Love are a rather nasty bunch, and I would bet silvers to sand tarts that they've magicked Tremaine up in some way so that his mind's not his own. The gods only know what they hope to achieve by sending him on a suicide mission like that."

The tall redhead's brow furrowed, but she slowly shook her head.

"I don't know a thing about this...Ish'gara tree..?" K'Nara glanced at Terran to see if she had gotten the name of the tree correct. "Figment...Ingrge...anyone...do YOU have any idea of how such a plant would figure into this..?"

(OOC: made a horrible Intelligence check of 4 to see if K'Nara had any hope of guessing what an Ish'gara tree was.)

Olana  d20+11=22
Thursday February 20th, 2003 12:56:49 PM

"Well, Tremaine must be mad if he wants to kill Parnoth single handedly. I seem to remember him telling us that Parnoth was a necessary part of the Kingdom, and kept the hordes of Izen at bay. Does anyone know where this tree is?"

The elf attempts to recall any past memories that mention the tree in question.
((Knowledge nature check DC 22))

Ingrge  d20+15=31
Thursday February 20th, 2003 8:08:03 PM

Thinking for a moment (knowledge Arcanna dc 31), Ingrge reports anythin he may Know. When finished he turns to the lad. You didn't by any chance bring this "book" with you did you?

Map to the Tree (DM Matt)
Friday February 21st, 2003 2:11:42 AM

Ingrge recalls some description of the tree, it sap having highly magical properties, but he can't remember its exact nature. Both he and Olana have heard the tree is located in Culverwood, though can't remember any other details.

"No sir, I wasn't given the book detailing the tree. But I was sent with this map to give you, detailing the tree's supposed location. It's a pretty old map though, but it should be accurate." The young man pulls out a sheet of parchment, handing it to K'Nara. The map is very well detailed, showing pretty precise directions within Culverwood to the trees location.

"As for what the tree actually does, I couldn't tell you, all I was told is that its supposed to be extremely magical in nature. They didn't tell me anymore. We hope you might be able to track him down while he looks for this tree, for after he finds it, the leaders fear they might not be able keep track of him...or worse."

Bertram returns from taking Bella home towards the end of the conversation, and is quickly caught up.

Milo
Friday February 21st, 2003 3:01:10 AM

Smiling, "Well-then-there-now... I guess we're gonna hunt up this tree, and hope that Tremaine isn't too far behind us... is that it?" Being somewhat curious, Milo sneaks a peak at the map. Then turning toward Figment, "I wonder what kinda spell it might take to break the evil love curse, or whatever seems to be affecting him." Milo's face quirks up, "Evil love... never thought I'd say those two words in the same sentence... it's almost like saying good hate... or some such nonsense."

Lian
Friday February 21st, 2003 4:55:19 AM

Lian listens quietly, then enters his two coppers.

"If Parnoth is removed from power, nothing stops the Hands Love or the Tines from siezing control. Of course at that point there might be a pretty bloody turf war. That is the term.. turf war?" The monk stops a moment.
"He was being held in a library?! What sort of confinement is that? A few nights... how many is a few nights?"
He pauses. "Why would he want to harvest this tree for its magical sap? What good would that serve?"

Lian has little knowledge of the region nor does he know of who holds power or sway (other than Parnoth), but it seems that he maybe a bit confused or may have been in meditation when the important issues were discussed.

"In what manner do you want him (Caden) returned?"

K'Nara
Friday February 21st, 2003 7:16:17 AM

"The need to keep Parnoth alive isn't as imperative now that the Dark Lord has gotten his wish and become a full-fledged god." K'Nara pointed out to Olana. "Still...he's claimed to have changed, and we did see that he has, indeed, freed the formerly-enslaved elves of the realm...so I suppose we need to give the big Green Guy a chance at redemption." A rather strange and somewhat melancholy expression swept across the woman warrior's face.

"Anyone regretting a past act of evil deserves a second chance."

Her tone seemed to imply a rather personal perspective to that opinion, but as suddenly as the rueful observation was put forth, K'Nara's usual business-like approach to their current situation came to the forefront again.

"I think our best chance at snagging Tremaine before he can do any harm is for us to try to beat him to that tree." she told the Emerald Talons firmly. "We will finish the last of our business with Bella's family in the morning and then make haste to where these directions seem to indicate to find the Ish'gara. And--unless Tremaine forces our hand--we'll capture the man...alive."

(OOC: the party used most of the extra 2000gp to buy the scroll that raised the girl back to life...K'Nara will give the change from that money to Bella's parents and instruct them to use it for the child's education [as per the instructions of Gargul.] Any objections from the rest of the party..?)

Orson
Friday February 21st, 2003 12:33:19 PM

Orson remains silent through the entire convesation, getting lost on all of these new names and groups. Finally getting things sorted out, at least he hopes, he asks a question. "Well Im all for going along and helping rescue him, if hes a friend of yours. But what about the dragon. Arn't you...uhh..we supposed to follow his orders?"

(OOC: Sounds like a plan for the extra gold. Im currently purchasing the scroll in catacombs, since Orson was already there. So the remaining 375gp can go towards lil Bella's training/schooling. Im for that.)

DM Note: Anyone wishing to make purchases with treasure do so quickly, hopefully before Talons get underway. Also still need character sheets from a few people, get those in please.

The mage reviews the map and calls up any memory he has of the legendary tree and any Arcane references to it (General Knowledge 10, Arcana 25).

Maloray
Sunday February 23rd, 2003 11:03:25 AM

Maloray likewise remains silent throughout the conversation, trying to follow the gist of what's going on. He'll tag along pretty much anywhere the Talons go, just for the experience of it and for reasons of his own.

(OOC Mal is likewise imbroiled in a transaction in the catacombs that's taking longer to complete than he would have hoped.)

Olana
Sunday February 23rd, 2003 7:34:28 PM

The elf agrees to the specified funds going to the girl and her parents.
"Well, if we're to travel back to Culverwood tomorrow, I'd better go and make sure the horses are good and rested. We have quite a journey," she says.

After winking at Milo, she goes and does just that.

Bella's show and tell (DM Matt)
Monday February 24th, 2003 12:32:11 PM

None of the Talons can come up with anything not already known of the Ish'gara Tree. Only of its location somewhee withing Culverwood, and its sap is supposed to be of the highest magical concentration, though the exact effects and properties remain unknown.

The young man gratefully thanks the Talons when they accept to track down Tremaine. "Well I must take leave of you. I'll report back that you accept, and make arrangements for someone to meet you to take custody of Tremaine once you get him." He shows on the map a location near the edge of Culverwood, "There in say...2 weeks? That should give you plenty of time?"

The man makes any final preperations and answers any last questions the Talons may have, then heads out. The Talons finish any last preperations in the last bit of the night, and sleep quickly to allow an early start in the morning.

----------------------------------

The next morning the Talons arrive early, heading to purchase any last minute supplies they might need, and to stop by Bella's home as planned.

Approaching the small home, near the outskirts of town, the door to the house flies open, the young girl sprinting out the door, running straight into K'Nara, latching on hugging her waist. "See mommy, I told you they'd come!" she calls back towards the house.

Her parents come out shortly after, subjecting the Talons to another round of thank you's that Bertram had suffered the night before. "We are eternally endebted to you. If theres ever anything we can do, please let us know."

----------------------------------

As the Talons discuss Bella's future and the funding the family will recieve, Bella makes her way to Figment, grasping his hand, pulling him to follow her, "Come, I wanna show you my magic stick" she says quietly, shooting a glance to her parents, hoping they didn't hear, which they show no sign of. Eagerly pulling the mage away from the discussion, she leads him (and those wishing to follow the girl) down a few blocks towards the edge of town, towards the location the party had entered the day before, the abandoned chapel.

Entering into the woods surrounding the chapel, she stops about half way in, glancing around suspiciously and over-exaggerated, making sure no one else in there. She moves to a nearby tree, reaching into a hollow witin the tunk, procuring a slender black stick, of very fine quality. Holding it up for Figment to take, he can see a lightning bolt design inscribed into the side of the shaft. "See, magic stick! Me and Tiffany hid it here, cause our parents woulda taken it away. Also have this ring, but it doesn't have anything special on it like the stick." She reaches in again, retreiving a plain silver ring, free of any inscriptions or markings of any sort. "Tiff had one, but her parents saw it and took it away, so I hid mine back here with the stick." She stares at the mage eagerly, seeming to await his appraisal of her supposed magical item.

Feel free to responde to any section, not trying to rush things along (well I am, but...). So post any last questions to the Tine member, and discussion with the parents, and any response to Bella's item.

Brother Bertram
Monday February 24th, 2003 1:33:29 PM

While Bella is off showing Figment her treasures, Bertram spends some time talking to her parents and discussing what Gargul has said that he expects of Bertram as well as Bella. He then gives the parents a purse and gives them Domi's blessing and makes sure his equipment is in order.

(OOC 2000 of Bert's Gold)

Lian  d20+14=20 d20+9=29 d20+17=36
Monday February 24th, 2003 8:07:22 PM

The monk grins when Bella attacks K'nara's waste.

The monk seems curious about Bella and Figments expedition, so he follows them, all the while staying hidden and silent. He doesn't Figment to go off without any back up, and if the child were to die again! What then?

(-5 for moving at full speed, Hide is 20 move silently is 29, trying to listening to Bella is 36)

The mage smiles at the children and takes both items in his hands and casts detect magic on them to see if they give him an idea of what they are - even though he has an idea already. "These are very nice... you must be careful with them - very careful...they are dangerous if not used properly. They could kill you or one of your friends...Let me see what they tell me...".

Milo  d20+28=39 d20+25=44
Tuesday February 25th, 2003 5:11:08 PM

The previous day...

After Olana's exit, Milo waits a few moments and then gets up, "I think I'll stretch my legs a bit today, before I have to get up on a horse tomorrow." The halfling smiles capriciously, and then steps out the door, dons his cloak, and skulks after the elf maiden. (OOC: Hide and Move Silently DCs 39 and 44 respectively).

Presently...

Milo is silent during most of the morning, simply enjoying the day before their task turns his mind to more serious thoughts. He notes that Lian is becoming quite the sneak, though he approves of the young elf's motives. For the moment, Milo though is quite content to simply be near Olana, whether that be on foot, or in the saddle.

Ingrge
Tuesday February 25th, 2003 7:04:31 PM

keeping up his daily routines of study and sparring, Ingrge spends a lot of his time playing and talking to the village children, though on one return trip several of the Talons may notice that Ingrge is carrying one less sword and has a new bow.

Before the messengewr leaves Ingrge asks him how Tremaine has changed in appearence since the talons pulled him from the prison, mentioning that it would probably be a good thing to be able to recognize him before they accidently killed him.

Olana
Wednesday February 26th, 2003 12:27:32 AM

Olana tries to make sure everything is prepped up and ready, and is glad of Milo's company. Being around him cheers her up a great deal after the rather harrowing adventure they'd just had. They had little time alone, so this was precious.

On the morning of departure, Olana joins the others at the precocious child's parent's house, smiling as the girl drags Figment down the road. Knowing Lian had followed made her feel a little easier, though. It was going to take a while before she got the memories of these snake horrors out of her system.

Finishing up Business (DM Matt)  d20=20 d20=17
Wednesday February 26th, 2003 2:02:40 AM

The messanger gives a basic description of Tremaine, sounding quite similiar to what Ingrge envisions.

-----------------------------

The parents seem acceptive with the Talons wishes for the girl, quite willing to put forth the effort asked, glad to have their child back. The gratefully accept the donation from the group, and are quite shocked at the amount given by the dwarven cleric.

-----------------------------

Figment takes the items from young Bella, casting his basic cantrip. Both items do radiate magic, the now obvious wand radiating evocation, and the plain silver ring a transmutation enchantment. Bella glances up towards Lians hidden position, her young eyes sighting the monks movements.

After hearing Figments warnings the young girl shakes her head as Figment tries to hand her back the items. "I want you guys to take 'em. If they're dangerous I don't want to hurt anyone. 'sides, I'm gonna be a great warrior like K'Nara, not use magic." The child will lead the mage back towards the group and her parents, waving for Lian to come too.

Lian
Wednesday February 26th, 2003 3:03:43 AM

Lian moves over to Figment and the girl.

"You have good eyes young one. Use them well. Be a great warrior with great senses."

K'Nara
Wednesday February 26th, 2003 3:55:08 PM

K'Nara was very affectionate with Bella, and firmly assured the girl's parent's that the Talons would ever be at their disposal if ever Bella or her family needed the group's help with anything. She advised them to use some of the money they were being given as a sort of "emergency fund" to hire a mage to get a message to the party if ever the need arose.

K'Nara listened to Terran's arrangements about a rendezvous after the Talons managed to get ahold of Tremaine, and nodded agreement.

"Sounds like a plan." she said, taking the map and storing it in her belt pouch.

"All right...are we all ready?" the female fighter asked of the others. "Business all wrapped up? Nothing else to tend to or retrieve..?" (OOC: That last bit would likely prompt Figment to make a quick stop at Tiffany's parents' place to see about that other silver ring--or at least mention it to K'Nara.)

"Okay, if we're all done here, Talons, let's get going!" K'Nara ordered, mounting Poki and bidding the locals farewell.

[DM Note: You can recall Dak saying that Tiffany was one of the other children taken by the serpents creatures, and unfortunately wasn't rescuable. And still feel free to post as you wish, once the talons set out we will return to the 1/day posting.

The mage smiles at the young ones. "Thank you young ones. We will use them well.". He quickly tucks them into his robes and moves back to the group. He nods to Lian as he passes.

Milo
Thursday February 27th, 2003 10:07:47 AM

Milo sits on the horse with Olana as they depart. He is sporting a shiny new masterwork shortbow, and a pair of quivers full of arrows, with four different colors of fletching; black, red, silver, and gold. Grumbling to nobody in particular, "Well, if my short legs find me behind in a fight again, at least I have some ordinance to unleash upon our foes."

Brother Bertram
Thursday February 27th, 2003 1:51:37 PM

Bertram rides along on his pony behind Milo and Olana, lost in thought about recent events and how they will effect his chosen calling.

Orson
Thursday February 27th, 2003 3:50:59 PM

Orson practices while waiting to leave, spinning a new longsword over in his hand, testing its weight versus his old sword he still has. He makes several practice attack combos, using one weapon as the primary, then the other, making she the balance of combat hasn't been disturrbed by the addition of a different weapon, or his enhanced strength due to his new enchanted leather gloves.

"Ready, boss" he says when K'Nara asks if the group is prepared to leave, stretching his legs and preparing for the long walk ahead.

Olana
Thursday February 27th, 2003 11:50:36 PM

The elf keeps quiet as Milo mentions getting left behind in battle, seeing as she had fallen down the hole into the pit. How clumsy of her!
If this carried on, then no doubt she would fall of her horse, too!
As they set off, she asks K'Nara who she wants up at the front on their journey.

Ingrge
Friday February 28th, 2003 5:51:10 PM

Getting MoonShadow ready to go takes little time but Ingrge takes a bit of time to rearrange a few things in his pack and his saddle bags. With plenty of time to spare he ready to set off with the others.
