Deliveries and Gathering (ADM Dominic) Monday April 14th, 2003 2:52:22 PM
Around midday a rugged looking dwarf wearing an apron bearing the emblem of the Catacombs walks into the inn. Upon entering he calls out "deliveries for Kedarn and Cadmar. Sirs where would you like your packages placed?" Upon finding out where the packages are to be placed he walks back outside and returns with several packages. When finished he says "there you go good sirs. Have a nice day." then turns and leaves the inn.
A short time later you see Cassandra walk into the inn.
OOC: Cadmar your package will open as soon as the transaction is completed.
Cadmar Monday April 14th, 2003 4:23:22 PM
When the witch walks in Cadmar stops in mid sentence, coughs, says "good morning", even though it is after noon, picks up his parcel (that is rather large) and straps it to his backpack. "Right, I'm ready to go." Halfway to the door he realizes that he is heading for the kichen, not out of the inn, so he just pretends that he wanted to get a cup of water before departure.
"Kedarn, let me help you with packing up."
Garrard Monday April 14th, 2003 4:33:03 PM
"I'm ready as well", says Garrard, putting on a modestly weighted backpack, and settling his shield strap over his shoulders.
Stepping a little closer to the others, and dropping his voice, Garrard continues, "Will we need anything specific to transport the herb in?"
Elerinn Monday April 14th, 2003 4:56:06 PM
Elerinn greets Cassandra cheerfully and puts on his small backpack. "Good morning, lady Cassandra. I'm ready to leave!"
Elerinn looks up at the others, the passivity he showed not so long ago now totally gone. As soon as they are ready to leave, Elerinn quickly walks towards the inn's exit.
Andrath Monday April 14th, 2003 5:10:26 PM
Andrath accepts the Catacombs voucher from Kedarn, "Thank you for taking care of this. In the future, unless I ask you differently, I am quite happy to take my share of treasure sold in the Catacombs as a voucher. Believe me, it is one place that I am sure we will be visiting regularily!"
Andrath also greets the witch, "Good day, my lady. It appears that we are ready to go. What can you tell us about where we are going, and what we are planning to do?"
Kedarn Monday April 14th, 2003 5:16:16 PM
Kedarn looks at the others the says "well looks like our supplies just arrived." Kedarn gets up and walks over to the packages and pulls a backpack out of the packages then starts to transfer his gear from his old backpack to the new one as well as puting some of the party supplies into it. "Hello Cassandra" Kedarn greets Cassandra as she enters.
OOC: supplies for the group that was delivered. Trail rations 3 wks for each person firewood (10 days) feed (10 days) tripod for hanging pots over fire (3' tall) iron pot Sack (2)
Cassandra Monday April 14th, 2003 5:25:57 PM
Cassandra appears wearing practical soft boots and a matching green top and short skirt. She has braided her longish straw-colored hair in a weave that keeps it secure against her head (a French braid, but they don't call it that in the Wold).
"Let me recap the job, and refresh your memories. We need a certain plant that grows only in certain caves in the Culverwood. That's what we're looking for."
"But the Culverwood can be dangerous, so we have to watch out. The caves are about a day's walk south of the Tower of Boydos. That's where we go first."
"We seek the root of the Salmonberry. Found only near rushing waters, we have a report on where to find it."
"I have the cases to carry it in my backpack."
She is carrying a longbow and has a smallish knapsack on her back.
"Questions? Let's talk as we walk."
Andrath d20+9=15 d20+8=21 d20+9=28 d20+9=22 d20+13=33 Monday April 14th, 2003 5:35:06 PM
Andrath moves over to the supplies just delivered to Kedarn. "I presume you bought these supplies with the party treasure? Is it alright if I take a couple of days worth of trail rations? I like to munch on them as we travel." Assuming Kedarn says it is OK, Andrath takes two days worth of trail rations, puts a small portion in his belt pouch, and puts the rest in his backpack.
Then he turns to Cassandra and says, "When we travel, I usually scout out in front. If you can give me a general idea of the direction we are travelling, I will be about 50'-100' in front of the party. What should I be on the lookout for, as potential dangers, in this forest? Most of my experience is in town."
[OOC: Scouting rolls as we travel: Hide 15, Listen 21, Move Silently 28, Search 22, and Spot 33 (a natural 20 for the spot roll).]
[OOC: Andrath is using Eyes of the Eagle, which give him a +5 spot bonus.]
Wynn Brightsong d20+5=25 Monday April 14th, 2003 7:28:42 PM
Wynn greets Cassandra with a bow "M'lady, my name is Wynn, I don't beleive we have met."
Wynn shoulders his pack and joins up with the group. "Please, tell me about yourself, what leads you to this adventure?" Wynn asks their new companion. He fusses with the strap of his pack in an effort to not appear overbearing or rude. [Diplomacy = 25, natural 20]
Lorth Tuesday April 15th, 2003 9:33:50 AM
Lorth greets Cassandra with a smile and a short bow. He then stands up, gear stowed and ready to go. When the party reaches the outskirts of town, Lorth unshoulders his shield and readies his warhammer.
Thram Tuesday April 15th, 2003 10:34:14 AM
Thram smiles at Cassandra when she arrives, and then he helps Kedarn load up Jenny the mule with the party equipment.
Once finished, he seems eager to start walking toward the Tower.
On The Road Again... (ADM Dominic) Tuesday April 15th, 2003 3:15:04 PM
As the group starts out you all take up your normal marching positions. During the walk the group does not see anything that would cause you to be alarmed. You pass through several farms and the occupants wave as you walk by. After a few hours travelling you realize that you will not make it to the Tower before dark. Will you find a place to make camp or continue on to the Tower? You feel that it is about half days walk from here to the tower.
If you camp are you going to post watches and what are they.
Cadmar Tuesday April 15th, 2003 3:32:34 PM
Before leaving Cadmar puts his share of trail rations in his backpack. On the way he walks ten steps behind Wynn and Cassandra with a very sour expression on his face. Still, his bad mood doesn't last very long. It's almost impossible to be gloomy on such a beautiful afternoon. Soon he is whistling merrily.
"Wynn, do you know any songs about Culverwood?"
Once it gets dark, Cadmar says: "I don't really see the point of walking in the dark. We will arive at the tower tired and will have to spend the next day there anyway. If we make a stop I can take the fifth watch."
Garrard Tuesday April 15th, 2003 3:51:47 PM
Garrard shoulders his share of the burden before setting out, tying items down to his backpack, and stowing rations within.
Once out on the trail, he walks quietly. Alternately, he listens to his companion and idly grooms his hawk in their silences, as he remembers lessons and stories of Culverwood from his youth. Wasn't there comments about the animals that lived there, or the humanoids that occasionally gave the local druids problems?
(Take 20 on wilderness lore, for a total of 27).
When he's pieced together enough of the memories to be useful, he tells the tale over the small tasks of setting up camp for the evening.
After imparting whatever he came up with, Garrard says, "I'll take third watch."
Elerinn Tuesday April 15th, 2003 4:53:26 PM
Elerinn, who talked constantly during the trip, still seems as energetic as he was when they left hours ago. Nevertheless, he says: "Cadmar, I agree with you, we better rest someplace near this night. If everyone agrees, I'd like to take first watch, because I am not really tired yet..."
Andrath Tuesday April 15th, 2003 5:06:24 PM
Andrath travels a little ahead of the group, keeping his eyes open. As darkness nears, he agrees with Cadmar, "Let's get some rest and be ready for the morning. I can work alright at night, as long as there is some small amount of light, but I know you humans have problems after dark. I will take the fourth watch, since I don't need to memorize any spells."
He approaches Cassandra and asks, "What is this Tower of Boydos? Who is Boydos?"
[OOC: Do we each take an hour watch, or do we have 2 people per 2-hour watch?]
Wynn Brightsong Tuesday April 15th, 2003 10:39:42 PM
Wynn walks beside Cassandra, commenting on the pastoral countryside, the weather, and the people they meet along the way. He hopes to hear her story in return.
When asked if he knows a song about Culverwood he pauses beside the trail to think for a moment...
"I can only remember one song about the Culverwood specifically. I heard it from an elven bard. Ruinor was his name, I think. He was old when I met him, even for an elf. So, no telling how old the song."
Slowly Wynn begins to sing, his voice is low and sombre.
Deep in the Culverwood, when the sun was high I saw a lady riding by She had flashing eyes and golden hair She rode upon a dappled mare
Deep in the Culverwood, by the last bird's call There came a soldier straight and tall He found his true love waiting there And he kissed her eyes and her golden hair
Deep in the Culverwood, by the evening star I saw a soldier ride to war He never would return again For in some battle, he was slain
Deep in the Culverwood, the people said She heard the news her love was dead But still she waited for him there With flowers in her golden hair
Deep in the Culverwood, by the pale moonlight A ghost goes riding every night She has golden hair, the people say And talks to shadows on her way
"T'is a sad song I know, but the only one I can remember."
When the party stops for the night Wynn will offer to take the second watch.
Cassandra Wednesday April 16th, 2003 6:51:41 AM
The young (for an elf) witch smiles at Wynn and denies that she is an adventurer. "I simply do what needs doing. I don't seek out danger. Frankly, I'm counting on you all if there is any trouble. My life is not that of adventure!"
That said, she does seem to be happy to be on the road. Cassandra seems to enjoy looking around and seeing the sights.
She also seems happy to have a chance to tell Andrath about the Tower of Boydos, which is due south and a little east of Jarlwolf. "I don't know who or what Boydos was, or why the tower is named that. I do know that in years past it was a home to the Sons of Chaos. That may have changed," she adds, smiling.
"But in fact, I recommend that we walk far around the place and keep low, to avoid all notice, after we cross the Windtree Creek. That part of the Valley is lawless still, far east of Merrydale, and the Pitchfork Council has little power there."
Cassandra claps after Wynn's song.
She volunteers to stand the first watch with Elerinn.
Lorth Wednesday April 16th, 2003 7:45:07 AM
Lorth's face sours at the talk of sneaking around. "Pardon me Lady Cassandra, but I must speak my mind. I don't mind skirting around something to avoid it, but sneaking? We have every right to walk where we like, we are not criminals.", Lorth says with conviction. "I will take whatever watch is open.", he says. Then he is quiet once again.
Thram Wednesday April 16th, 2003 12:12:14 PM
Thram walks silently along with the group for most of the day. He just enjoys being outdoors. The smell of the grass and flowers. The light breeze. The color of the sky. It all seemed so perfect.
With the discussion about watches he pitches in though, "You know kids camp not too far from here. It's not like we're marching off to war. I'd say let our human friends sleep, and we elves can keep an eye on the group since we'll be awake all night anyway. As long as we stagger our trances, we won't have any trouble."
Kedarn Wednesday April 16th, 2003 2:28:46 PM
During the walk Kedarn is looking around at the view with a smile on his face whenever he sees children playing.
Kedarn looks up at the suggestion from Thram and replies "I think that is a fair option as long as we stagger so that there is always two awake."
Approaching the Tower of Boydos (ADM Dominic) Wednesday April 16th, 2003 3:01:47 PM
Following a quiet night you continue on towards the Culverwoods. An hour after you set out you come to the creek that Cassandra told you about. As you cross the creek you feel as if you just crossed an invisible barrier. The edges of your senses tingle with an uneasy feeling of uncontrolled turmoil.
Over the next two hours you feel as if there are eyes following your every move. You begin to feel a growing sense of uneasiness as you get closer to the Tower of Boydos.
Cassandra Wednesday April 16th, 2003 3:34:14 PM
The pert witch puts her hands on her hips and glares at Lorth. "Hey, I did not call you a criminal! What's more, if you want to be a hero and get yourself killed, that's fine with me! But what's more important? Walking around like you own the place or living to help me get the plants Dulcet needs?"
She pauses long enough to count to ten and unclenches her fists. "Brave Lorth, all I'm asking is that we be cautious and give the Tower a wide berth. Okay?"
Later, after crossing the stream, Cassandra keeps well in the middle of the group and looks around constantly.
"We'll cross the old road from Witchspawn to Merrydale soon," she says. "Nowadays few walk its length. With luck we will camp in the eaves of the Culverwood tonight."
Cadmar Wednesday April 16th, 2003 5:01:19 PM
"That was an excellent song, Wynn! Thank you!" Cadmar jumps over the stream, and when Cassandra has her back turned on them he smiles a little smile at Lorth, rises his eyebrow, and shrugs.
Soon, he finds himself walking behind the witch. Lacking the natural charm of Wynn, he is thinking hard about something inteligent to say. Fortunately, he recalls that there really was something he wanted to mention to Dulcet, or, failing that, to Cassandra.
"I just remembered something you might want to talk to Dulcet about, Cassandra. Do you remember the night we met on the hilltop? Some people were waiting for us. One of them told us that <Dulcet expected us to work for free>. We haven't discussed the details of our agreement with anyone."
"Either the house we met at is not as safe as you think it is, or Dulcet is spied on."
Elerinn Wednesday April 16th, 2003 5:04:52 PM
Elerinn awoke this morning with the strange sensation of waking up in the middle of a dream, with only one last image from the dream world. Wynn's gold haired lady.
He can't forget the image, and asks Wynn if he knows if there is some true story behind the song. During this day's walk, he reminds a bit more quiet then yesterday.
As the group of travellers get close to the Tower, Elerinn forgets the memory of the lost dream somewhat, because there is a stronger feeling. A feeling of danger. Elerinn doesn't look at the others much, because their faces seem to confirm his own feelings.
Garrard Wednesday April 16th, 2003 6:54:05 PM
In the late morning Garrard sets his hawk loose to hunt, and when it returns, examines its feathers carefully.
As the group walks, Garrard will ask small questions about music and oratory of Wynn, asking more about technique and teachers than anything else. Assuming the bard is willing to talk, Garrard will listen and prompt him to continue as long as Wynn is willing to speak.
Then, when the group encounters the barrier, Garrard will ask Cassandra, "What can you tell us about the other covens in the area, especially the Green Coven? I have the feeling we may encounter their minions and handiwork again."
Wynn Brightsong d20+2=18 Wednesday April 16th, 2003 8:36:12 PM
Wynn travels along with the main group, trying to keep track of Andrath scouting up ahead (Spot = 18).
Aware of the heavy mood that has settled on the group since crossing the stream Wynn tries to keep the conversation going. He turns first to the gnome.
"Bards and minstrels rarely invent such tales Elerinn, we each sing or tell them differently, emphasizing those parts most meaningful to the situation at hand, embellishing them to fit the audience or our own taste. As I said, I first heard the song from a aged elven bard, who in turn heard it from I know not where. It is likely very old. Yet surely many a maiden has waited in hope of the return of a loved one, only to be disappointed by Gargul. I am sure there is some truth to the story, but I have not heard of a ghost such as this in my short time in the Wold."
Wynn takes the opportunity to boil water and brew some tea for his companions during one of the brief rests made along the way. It is during such a rest that he engages the druid Garrard in conversation.
"While I have had formal training in the arts and music, only the experience of a misspent youth prepares one to pass along the oral traditions of the Wold. No tutor can teach you how to bend a tale to capture your audience, how to tug at their heartstrings, or inspire courage with a well spun tale."
Wynn pauses to pour the tea into a small tin mug before continuing...
"The best tales are told in some of the worst places, where stories of adventure can be had for a glass of beer. Songs of courage and hope, death and sorrow are more often heard around the fires of a campsite and the barracks of an army garrison than in the concert halls and parlours of the wealthy. I still have much to learn and have yet to pen my own song, but given time and good company I am sure I will."
While they are travelling, Andrath continues to range ahead, trying to move as quietly as possible (but not very well). It is obvious that he needs practice in the forest. "Give me a dark alley or a rooftop any day," he thinks to himself as he stumbles over yet another root.
At tea-time, Andrath listens to Wynn talk about the bardish life. "The young half-elf sure does have a way with words, doesn't he," he says to no-one in particular. The life of a city watch thief-chaser hadn't given Andrath much time to develop the more diplomatic skills, but he knew who to count on when the situation calls for someone with a silver tongue.
As they near the tower, Andrath returns to Cassandra's side, and asks, "How closely do we need to pass by the tower? Do you want me to move ahead and scout it out? Maybe if there is something dangerous in the tower, we don't want to leave it at our backs. How far to the cave from here?" [OOC: Dominic, if Andrath is going to scout the tower, I plan to reroll the sneak-peek rolls. OK?]
Lorth Thursday April 17th, 2003 7:30:06 AM
"Better to stay true to ones path and die in the effort.", Lorth says quietly, Thinking to himself, then scurrying around in the dark.
Lorth then listens to Wynn's stories. He marches along the rest of the day, keeping alert, a content look on his face.
Thram Thursday April 17th, 2003 10:56:16 AM
Thram idly whistles to himself after the group crosses the creek. He doesn't seem to notice that he's doing it.
Kedarn Thursday April 17th, 2003 3:51:26 PM
Kedarn walks along with the group just looking at the scenery and listening to what the others have to say. After crossing the creek Kedarn starts to glance around nervously while walking.
Into the Culverwoods (ADM Dominic) Thursday April 17th, 2003 4:08:59 PM
As you quickly move past the Tower of Boydos you think you see what looks to be several people shadowing the group until you arepast the tower.
Walking for another hour or so in a southerly direction you come to a vast old growth forest. As you enter into the forest you start to get a deeper sense of forboding the deeper you proceed into the Culverwoods. You see what looks to be lights moving off in the distance through the woods. A few moments later they seem to vanish then reapear on the other side of the party but at the same what you think is the same distance from the group. After approximately a half hour later you come upon what looks to be a nice place to camp as it is getting dark enough that you are all haveing trouble continuing through the woods.
shall you camp or continue into the woods in the dark?
Cadmar Thursday April 17th, 2003 4:51:14 PM
"Well, we are not likely to reach our destination today, even if we continue our march. Anyone else feels like camping?"
"I don't think we should light a fire tonight. And we better keep at least two people awake at the same time. I can take the third watch with whoever wants to join me."
"If we are assailed by some beast, our best reaction would be to climb a tree. At least that's what my instincts are telling me. We would have some time to decide what to do. Possibly we could scare the the beast away with arrows."
Cadmar spends some time walking around the camp looking at trees. Finally he finds himself one that can be easily climbed. He does that once, just to get some practice and to get a look at the forest from over the treetops.
"I think I will sleep with my hand on my bow."
Wynn Brightsong d20+4=23 d20+2=9 Thursday April 17th, 2003 5:31:31 PM
Wynn offers to take the first watch and spends a few moments scouting the surroundings for obvious lines of escape and ambush. Cadmar has made him edgy.
"Cassandra" the bard asks, "what more can you tell us of the creatures and inhabitants of the Culverwood? Do you know what those flickering lights might have been?"
When it is time for Wynn's watch he takes position in one of the more concealed areas he had scouted out earlier and scans the surroundings, his senses alert for danger [Listen=23; Spot=9]. Only after he has settled into position does Wynn realize that the same branches and rocks that conceal him, make it difficult to see all that might be going on around him.
Elerinn Thursday April 17th, 2003 5:35:18 PM
Elerinn listened to Wynn on the way deeper into Culverwood, intrigued by his explanation. Later, as Cadmar proposes to camp here, he agrees, and says he likes to take the first watch again.
When he remembers what Wynn's told him this day, he replies to him, as if the half-elf told the story just some moments ago: "I think the best artists are people like you, Wynn. I mean, adventurous people. For the best art is born from the most extreme experiences..."
Elerinn looks down, suddenly sad. He finishes his sentence in a vague and timid voice: "or so I believe."
Garrard Thursday April 17th, 2003 6:05:14 PM
Garrard will second the wisdom of resting and doubling watches, taking second and third watch.
When the group enters Culverwood, Garrard will ask for a short stop, during which he kneels a short distance from the group at the bore of one of the great trees. He quietly chants in Sylvan for about three minutes, and then stands, smiling.
If any listening understands the language, it is a quiet introduction of Garrard Talhein, initiate of the Windbourne Hills, to the Forest.
Andrath Friday April 18th, 2003 1:45:03 AM
Andrath answers Cadmar, "I think we should have a very bright fire tonight. Whatever is out there already knows about us, so it is no use trying to hide from them. Let's have a fire; that way, if we are attacked at night, we can all see what is going on, even you humans. Also, I understand that many wild creatures are afraid of fire, and it might help to keep some of them at bay. I plan to rest with a torch in my hand, so that I can quickly thrust it into the fire if we need to fight."
Here are the watches that I propose: first watch Kedarn and Elerinn, second watch Lorth and Thram, third watch Cadmar and myself, and last watch Wynn and Garrard. That way, there is one of us with low-light vision on each watch, and the spell-casters are on the first and last watches, so that they get a continuous night's sleep and can get spells easily in the morning. That is, assuming that nothing bothers us in the night." He looks knowingly at the lights off in the forest.
Unless someone stops him, he starts to gather deadfall for the fire.
Cassandra Friday April 18th, 2003 7:49:18 AM
To Cadmar, regarding compensation, the young witch says that she has been told to say that there will be a generous thank you for your help. In fact, that is all she knows. She hopes that is enough for now at least.
To Garrard, she says that the Coven of Weal and the Green Coven are the only two covens that have declared themselves so far. There are others of course, who went underground when the Jarl ruled, and they prefer secrecy for now. She thinks you should watch out for the Green Coven, but they have broken no laws that she knows of, so in good faith, with all getting a fresh start with the start of the new regime, she doesn't think she should speak ill of brethren witches.
She also has to plead ignorance of the Culverwood. SHe has been here only twice before, both times in the company of witches who were experienced. She only knows that it is a magical place, and to expect the unexpected.
She agrees that two people should be on watch at all times.
Lorth Friday April 18th, 2003 8:05:11 AM
Lorth agrees to take the second watch. "I also would like a fire, as I am next to useless trying to watch in the dark." He then helps Andrath gather up deadfall.
Cadmar Friday April 18th, 2003 3:08:59 PM
"All right, let's have the fire. I hope the only creatures attracted by it will be mosquitoes."
"Cassandra, I was not mentioning award to force you to promise anything. All I wanted to say was that last time we worked for you, some people knew details of our agreement with Dulcet only hours after it has been made."
Cadmar shrugs and starts to collect deadfall.
Thram Friday April 18th, 2003 3:14:16 PM
Thram agrees to Andrath's watch schedule. He offers a little advice on the wood though, "I grew up in the Culverwood, though not anywhere near here. This part of the wood seems... darker, more ominous than where we lived. I can't really say anything about this area, but I can offer some general comments: The forest itself is magical. Don't harm it or threaten it. If you build a fire, use dead branches or what we've brought with us. After it's lit, don't get it too close to the trees. Also, keep in mind that almost any sort of creature could live in here. Few things in the wood are actually evil, but plenty of them are dangerous. Keep an eye out for anything."
Thram looks serious, but he doesn't seem particularly worried.
Kedarn d20+5=13 d20+5=18 Friday April 18th, 2003 5:07:13 PM
Kedarn agrees with Andrath and Thram on the watch schedule. Kedarn will help setup camp for the night by making a place for the fire. Kedarn will scrape any loose debris in a large area around where the fire will be and then place stones that he finds in the area in a rough circle about 5' diameter for the fire.
While on watch Kedarn will watch for anything strange. (spot 13, listen 18)

Everyone settles in for a quiet night in camp around the fire that Cadmar got going. You all listen to the many different and strange sounds of the Culverwoods around you while eating your meal. After a couple of hours Kedarn and Elerinn wake Lorth and Thram for their watch and settle down to sleep for the night. About half way through their watch Lorth and Thram hear from some where in the woods around them "You must pay to sleep in the Culverwood's! Pay us now!" After a few minutes pass the voice repeats the demand.
ADM Dominic Friday April 18th, 2003 5:18:20 PM
OOC: sorry it is so late the post, busy day today.
Wynn Brightsong Friday April 18th, 2003 5:48:24 PM
Wynn's dreams are interrupted by voices coming from the darkness. He quietly rolls to one side and reaches for his armor. He is surprised to feel hard chain rather than leather, and after a moment realizes that his purchase from the Catacombs has been mysteriously delivered.
The voices from the dark continue and Wynn whispers to Garrard who lies next to him "Help me get this on."
Wynn spends the rest of the round trying to hastily done the new chain shirt.
Garrard Friday April 18th, 2003 6:01:48 PM
Garrard blinks awake at Wynn's comments, and wastes a few moments coming to a bleary focus before rolling over to help Wynn wiggle into his maille.
Cassandra Saturday April 19th, 2003 7:00:13 AM
"zzzzzzz"
Cassandra is still asleep.
Andrath d20+2=5 Saturday April 19th, 2003 10:48:56 PM
Andrath continues to sleep soundly through the voices.
Cadmar Sunday April 20th, 2003 2:01:47 PM
Cadmar snores lightly and mumbles something in his sleep. Being an adventurer, he sleeps in his chainmail and with boots on, trading comfort for security.
Elerinn Sunday April 20th, 2003 4:52:09 PM
Elerinn, who is quite a deep sleeper, does not wake up when the demanding voices call the group of adventurers.
Lorth Monday April 21st, 2003 9:05:58 AM
Lorth stands up and faces the direction of the voices. "Surely if your claim is just, we will pay for the honor of sleeping in the forest. Approach our campsite so that we may see you, no harm shall befall you, unless you bring it upon yourself. We only wish to camp here as we are passing through, to other parts."
As Lorth is speaking, he notices Wynn and Garrard waking, he then casually walks about camp, always keeping his face towards the voices. In turn, he wanders to his companions beds and give them a good tap in the arm with his boot.
(I wake as many as I can get in one round, in this order: Cadmar, Andrath, Kedarn. I only wake Cassandra and Elerinn, if things look bad as they are spell casters.)
Andrath d20+9=13 d20+9=24 d20+13=25 Monday April 21st, 2003 10:06:59 AM
Andrath, wakened by Lorth, listens to what the paladin says in reply to the voices. If the night forest has enough light for Andrath to be able to see, he will crouch and quietly make his way out away from the fire, to take cover in the forest outside the clearing. Not having heard the voices, he has no specific direction to move, so he moves into the forest closest to where he was sleeping. He leaves his bow, arrows and pack where he was sleeping. [OOC: Hide 13, Move silently 24, Spot 25].
If the forest will be too dark for the elven rogue to make his way safely in, he will stay prone and ready his bow and arrows as quietly as possible.
Thram Monday April 21st, 2003 12:15:33 PM
Thram shouts out loudly, "OK! Let me get my purse! How much is the toll anyway?! I have 15 gold. I hope that's enough."
He's really just trying to stall while yelling loudly enough to wake everyone up.
Kedarn Monday April 21st, 2003 4:34:39 PM
Kedarn wakes up to Lorth proding him in the arm with his boot. Kedarn starts to pull on the top part of his armor while looking around.
Toll Demand (ADM Dominic) Monday April 21st, 2003 6:01:51 PM
"Last chance, pay up or face the consequences!" the group hears from all around the camp.
Andrath thinks he can just make out the shadow of a humanoid in the woods off to the left of the camp.
Wynn Brightsong d20+3=9 d20+2=21 Monday April 21st, 2003 8:00:17 PM
Realizing the urgency of their situation, Wynn struggles to don his new armor with Garrard's help. As much as possible he peers into the darkness for signs of their potential assailants [search=9, spot=21].
Garrard Monday April 21st, 2003 10:27:27 PM
Garrard smiles grimly, and gestures in the general direction of the voice whilst incanting a single word in Sylvan.
"Illuminate".
(Casting Faerie Fire with an area hopefully centered on where Garrard hears the voice. The Area of Effect will hopefully splash outwards.)
Andrath d20+9=21 d20+9=18 d20+13=30 Monday April 21st, 2003 11:06:40 PM
Andrath slowly and quietly makes his way towards the humanoid figure in the forest, trying to make out what kind of a creature it is, and how it is dressed and armed. [OOC: Hide 21, Move Silently 18, Spot 30]
Cadmar Tuesday April 22nd, 2003 3:13:40 AM
Cadmar wakes up with a yawn. It takes him a moment to realize what is going on. Once he does, he does not appear to be overly concerned.
"If the things wanted to hurt us, they would attack the guards without a warning while the rest of us was asleep. Either there are so many of them that they think we don't stand a chance either way, or somebody is playing a prank on us."
Still, he stands up, rubbing the last remains of sleep from his eyes.
"All right, what is it that you want? We have some bread we can share with you. Maybe we can find some wine, too?" Cadmar looks around with doubt and whispers: "Does anyone have wine?"
Cassandra Tuesday April 22nd, 2003 7:12:25 AM
Startled out of her deep elvish trance, the young witch seems a little disorientated.
"What did they say?" she asks. "Did they say 'It's the last dance for truth or consequences'? What the heck does that mean?"
Lorth Tuesday April 22nd, 2003 7:23:01 AM
Lorth steadies his shield and readies his warhammer, for what he now thinks is an oncoming attack. While doing this he moves over to Elerinn and taps him with his boot. "I suppose if they really wanted money they would of waited a few minutes for us to get it together. Seems like they are trying to justify to themselves, an attack on us.", says Lorth, "Domi protect us and may Gargul harvest their souls."
Thram Tuesday April 22nd, 2003 10:42:16 AM
A bit annoyed that the voices haven't given an amount, Thram calls out, "It would save everyone a whole lot of trouble if you'd just tell us how much the toll is. In the meantime, here's a downpayment."
The monk fishes a gold piece out of his purse and randomly hurls it into the forest.
"There you go. Happy?"
Elerinn Tuesday April 22nd, 2003 3:00:56 PM
Elerinn wakes up when Lorth taps his boot and looks around, disorientated. Elerinn stands up, bumps into a person near and whispers, with panic in his voice: "What's happening?! What's happening?"
Kedarn d20+5=17 Tuesday April 22nd, 2003 4:09:11 PM
Kedarn looks around trying to see if he can spot whom ever is talking to the party (spot 17.)
Negotiations (ADM Dominic) d20+13=26 d20+13=30 d20+13=26 d20+13=24 d20+15=16 d20+15=25 d20+15=25 Tuesday April 22nd, 2003 4:22:00 PM
As Wynn finishes pulling on his armor Garrard releases his spell outlining one of the people talking to the group in a greenish flames. This causes it to run away from the group into the woods. Andrath notices the shadow out of place about 20' from where he is hiding. He notices that it has horns on its head and is humanoid in shape.
In answer to Thram's question, you hear "your party's weight in gold and we will let you rest."
Cadmar Tuesday April 22nd, 2003 5:00:44 PM
Cadmar, who was standing alert with an arrow on his bow, lowers his weapon and bursts out in laughter. It takes him a moment to calm down.
"That's a good one. I'll play along. What are you going to do if we refuse?"
Andrath d20+5=22 d8+3=8 d6=6 d20+6=14 Tuesday April 22nd, 2003 8:41:38 PM
Andrath crouches down and keeps an eye on the figure. [OOC: Dominic, you weren't clear; is the voice coming from the figure in front of Andrath, or somewhere else?] "Our weight in gold?" he thinks to himself. "What a ridiculous idea!" Then he smiles at Cadmar's response. He tries to figure out if the voice is serious, or only fooling. [OOC: Sense motive 14.]
He will hold his action, and charge the creature if it makes any offensive action. [OOC: Charge attack hitting AC 22, for 14 damage total, but only if the shadow humanoid carries out an overtly offensive action, such as an attack, or casting a spell.]
Wynn Brightsong (AC 18; HP 7) d20+3=23 d20+3=8 d20+1=4 Tuesday April 22nd, 2003 9:51:32 PM
Wynn whispers his thanks to Garrard and picks up his sword and shield. He tries to keep track of the being that ran from Garrard's light spell [search=23 - a natural 20].
Think now, where have I seen such a being before? What have I heard about in my travels that might bother a visitors to Culverwood? Wynn thinks to himself [Bardic Knowledge=8] but too much is happening to concentrate on yet another task.
Wynn questions in his mind whether there are really more than one, or if they are being bluffed but cannot tell anything from the voice itself. [sense motive=4]
Garrard Wednesday April 23rd, 2003 3:49:57 AM
Garrard states clearly, "I can repeat the prayer again and again. Shall we discuss this like civilised beings?"
Lorth d20+4=6 Wednesday April 23rd, 2003 8:05:50 AM
"Just someone or something in the wood demanding payment for us sleeping in the woods.", Lorth says calmly to Elerinn. He then shouts, "I dare say your going to be badly disappointed if you came for our weight in gold. Why don't you let us know who's authority you are acting on and then ask for something reasonable. It would probably save all of us alot of trouble and effort."(OOC: Diplomacy: 6 Oh well)
Cassandra Wednesday April 23rd, 2003 9:42:06 AM
The cute witch pipes up with dismay in her voice. "Oh dear! We don't have that much gold! Even if we had had it with us, how would we have carried it with us? Gold is very heavy! Our party's weight in gold -- well, that would be really heavy!"
Her voice takes on a thoughtful tone. "Wait! If the party weighed one ton, and we had our weight in gold with us, that would be two tons altogether, right? One ton for us, and one ton of gold to pay you. But then our party would have weighed two tons, and we would have to have had two more tons of gold to pay the toll. That can't be, because then the total weight of the party would have been four tons! Hey! Does the weight of our party include the weight of any gold we are carrying? Because if it does, this will never work!"
"I'm assuming you DID bring scales with you, right? Right?"
Thram Wednesday April 23rd, 2003 3:16:45 PM
Figuring that the longer he talks, the longer everyone will have to wake up, Thram launches into a little speech, "Let's see... there's 9 of us... roughly 150 pounds each... I figure that's a fair average between the humans and the elves. That comes to 1350 pounds. So 1350 gold. OK. OK. That seems about... Hey wait! I didn't count the donkey. Should I count the donkey?"
Kedarn d20+5=10 Wednesday April 23rd, 2003 4:07:56 PM
"Thram, I can give 20 gold to the fee" quietly Kedarn says to Thram while looking around for the person talking.
Offer Made (ADM Dominic) d20+13=20 d20+13=32 d20+13=14 d20+15=21 d20+15=21 d20+15=32 d20+13=17 d20+13=26 d20+13=19 Wednesday April 23rd, 2003 4:20:21 PM
The group notices that the voice is coming from two different directions. Andrath notices that the creature that he sees is approximately 30' to the left of the campsite in the woods. Every so often the group hears small bits of laughter coming from the voices.
After a few moments the party hears from the voice to the right of the camp "Oh, we will settle for half your party weight in gold, and because we are so magnanimous we'll exclude the donkey's weight. With what you said that would be, oh... 675 gp. You can just place it at the edge of the camp for us to collect."
Elerinn Wednesday April 23rd, 2003 5:24:00 PM
When Elerinn hears the others taunting the unfamiliar voices, he smiles a bit, realizing there less threat than he had expected. Elerinn, with eyes which are not yet adapted to the darkness, tries to look up at one of the other's faces and whispers, with a smirk on his face: "Shall we give them a sack of coppers? Maybe it's too dark for them to notice..."
Wynn Brightsong d20+3=5 Wednesday April 23rd, 2003 9:12:06 PM
Wynn moves towards where the donkey is hobbled and makes sure it and the contents it carries are secure. He sheaths his sword in the process and unloops the sling from its familiar spot on his belt. He keeps low and in the shadows of the fire as much as possible, although the donkey stands in full light from the fire [Hide=5].
Andrath Wednesday April 23rd, 2003 10:28:25 PM
Andrath stands up, lowers his sword to his side, and steps up to the horned figure in the forest. "Well, I must say, 675 gp for a night's rest for nine has to be the most expensive inn that I have ever heard of! I surely hope that you have feather beds, and a free breakfast. And what about the donkey, does it get a feather bed, too? Oh, that's right, you are throwing the night's rest for the donkey in for free. I guess we really can't expect a free donkey to get a feather bed, can we? So, where exactly is this wonderful inn? It will certainly beat sleeping on the cold ground."
Cadmar d20+2=19 Thursday April 24th, 2003 5:27:38 AM
Cadmar looks at Cassandra with surprise, not sure if she is mocking the voices. The expression on his face is somewhat funny to look at.
Moving near the donkey, but not looking at Wynn, he whispers: "Well, now might be a good time to use your silver tongue, friend."
Speaking to the unseen strangers once again, he replies: "So much gold. Come on! An honest farmer working his hands off day by day won't see a tenth of it in his entire life. Besides, what good is gold in the forest of Culverwood? Come on, join us by the fire! We will share our food with you. When was the last time you tasted bread and fresh butter? Besides, some of us are blessed with good voices. Would you like to hear a song from distant lands? We can talk about payment after supper. You will judge yourself if our hospitality has earned us a discount." [Diplomacy 19]
Lorth Thursday April 24th, 2003 8:32:55 AM
Lorth listens to the way his friends are speaking and thinks there isn't as much threat here as he imagined, still he keeps at the ready, just incase. Although he decides to keep quiet for now to see how this developes.
Thram Thursday April 24th, 2003 9:02:05 AM
Thram shouts out, "675. Alright. Oh wait a minute, I only have 15 gold. Remember? I told you that right off. We'd have to be daft to go walking around with 675. So how's 15 sound? It's a better rate than you'd get if you owned an honest inn, and it's the perfect amount to keep you from running the risk of having a sword accidentally slip between your ribs."
Cassandra Thursday April 24th, 2003 10:34:10 AM
Seeming a little more serious, the witch adds, "Well a reasonable toll doesn't seem unreasonable."
Kedarn Thursday April 24th, 2003 3:57:00 PM
Kedarn moves over towards the mule and keeps looking around.
Second Offer (ADM Dominic) Thursday April 24th, 2003 4:11:22 PM
As Andrath closes the distance to the shadowy figure, he notices that the person had goat legs instead of normal legs. The person turns to him and says loud enough so the everyone can hear "How about 300 gold, some wine and a song?"
Garrard d20+3=8 Thursday April 24th, 2003 4:40:22 PM
Seeing the situation rapidly becoming more reasonable, Garrard relaxes a bit, but steps back near Cassandra and Elerinn. Quietly, he repeats a druidic litany in Sylvan, his usual habit when working to remain calm and collected.
(Spot: 8)
Elerinn Thursday April 24th, 2003 4:50:54 PM
Elerinn's eyes have adjusted to the darkness somewhat, so he looks Garrard's face as he says: "That's still not really an amount of gold I would like to give to complete strangers..."
Then, Elerinn calls to the strange creatures: "Before we give you anything, I'd like to know who you are. And what kind of authority you have to demand a toll for our peacefull stay in your beautyfull, but rather restless forest."
Wynn Brightsong d20+3=6 d20+5=19 Thursday April 24th, 2003 7:38:02 PM
Wynn continues to search the darkness to make out the creatures that surround them, but the light of the fire makes it difficult [search=6]
"Well my hidden friends" Wynn calls out. "You have certainly had your fun at our expense. Would you not rather come forward and warm yourselves by the fire? Some of us grow concerned at your intentions and it might be wisest to turn such thoughts aside." [Diplomacy=19]
Andrath Friday April 25th, 2003 1:01:35 AM
Andrath looks at the strange creature in front of him, and says, "How about some company, a meal, and a song? And it is also possible that we could find some wine. We are travellers, and cannot afford 300 gold pieces every time we sleep outdoors."
Cassandra Friday April 25th, 2003 9:47:55 AM
"Hmmm ... what would be reasonable?"
"Well, I didn't bring any spare change with me, or wine, but I would give you a curing potion and a potion that lets you talk with animals."
"And I would gladly offer a song."
She takes two vials out of her back pack.
Lorth Friday April 25th, 2003 12:25:23 PM
Lorth nods to Elerinn, and says, "If they have no authority to charge tolls, then they are nothing but common theives. Friends don't approach you in the dark and demand things. I suggest we give them nothing except our fire and hospitality" ...he pauses... "If they don't want that, they can go find someone else to harass."
Thram Friday April 25th, 2003 3:23:26 PM
In a good natured voice, Thram calls out, "Wine and a song! Now you're speaking my language. If you have some pipes or a lute come on up to the fire, and we'll have some fun!"
Kedarn Friday April 25th, 2003 5:33:44 PM
Kedarn looks at Cassandra then says "I hope they take that offer."
Offer Accepted (ADM Dominic) d20+9=15 Friday April 25th, 2003 5:43:55 PM
Walking into the camp the group sees two Satyrs enter the camp and walk up to Cassandra. They glance at Elerinn then say "We are not the ones who trespass in the Culverwoods. We live here." Then they turn to Cassandra and say "Well madame we will accept your offer for the potions and the song. We will provide accompaning music with our pipes." At this point a third Satyr joins the others and pulls out a set of pipes. If Cassandra starts to sing he will begin playing an accompaning piece on the pipes. After the song they will leave the party and return to the woods.
Wynn Brightsong d20+3=20 d20+5=16 Friday April 25th, 2003 8:59:16 PM
Wynn sees the three satyrs enter the camp and is momentarily awestruck. He has of course heard of satyrs, for they are legendary among bards for their love of music and song as well as the magic of their pipes [bardic knowledge = 20].
"I wonder if the stories are true?" Wynn thinks to himself. Thinking it unwise to renage on the hospitality already offered Wynn decides to join in the 'ceilidh' but to stay atuned to any magical effects. At the first twinge of any magic he will attempt to counter with his own voice [countersong = 16].
Wynn moves closer to the fire and the middle of the party.
Cadmar Saturday April 26th, 2003 4:48:32 AM
Cadmar visibly relaxes and sits by the fire. He opens one of his rations. "Here, after you are done playing please have some pears and plums. I would be surprised if they grew in the forest."
The ranger waits with interest for the music. Sure, he has heard stories that it might be perilous, but he feels safe in the company of his friends.
If there is an opportunity, he will very politely ask the satyrs: "Are there any areas of the forest we should avoid? Are there any hints you would give to outsiders that have to make their way through Culverwood?"
After the visitors are gone, he says: "Well, I might as well stay up until it's my turn to take watch. I couldn't shut my eyes after having my sleep interrupted like this."
Garrard Sunday April 27th, 2003 12:09:15 AM
Garrard listens to the satyrs story and songs respectfully, offering what news he may know from other faerie creatures up in the hills. Before the satyrs leave, he offers to carry any messages they might have for other fae creatures Garrard might encounter.
Once gone, Garrard seems to have little trouble getting back to sleep. As he beds down, he chuckles to himself, saying, "Sometimes, it just doesn't pay to walk or work by day when there are others around who await the glory of the moon."
Elerinn Sunday April 27th, 2003 5:28:46 PM
Elerinn, who realizes that the satyrs are not really hostile, apologizes for his rude behaviour. After that, he listens to their songs, hypnotized by their unusual music. He regrets it when the creatures finally leave, but is able to fall asleep as soon as he closes his eyes.
Andrath Monday April 28th, 2003 12:44:06 AM
Andrath sits apart from the group, and doesn't join in the singing. He moves over to Lorth, and whispers, "Our party is going to get a name for itself as a bunch of easy marks. That is twice now that we have given in to simple extortion: once with the Band of the Hand, and now with these forest creatures. It will be interesting when we are next accosted, and someone demands a toll for breathing the same air as they do. These creatures had no right to charge us for simply sleeping in the forest! I sure hope our party develops some backbone soon!"
Once the creatures leave, he prepares to rest and take his turn at watch through the rest of the night.
Lorth Monday April 28th, 2003 8:31:08 AM
Lorth nods to Andrath, "I agree wholeheartly, that these creatures have no right to demand anything. This does not sit well with me at all." He then turns his back on them, and continues his watch dutifully.
Cassandra d20+5=19 Monday April 28th, 2003 9:40:36 AM
The young elf witch hands over the two potions and gladly offers to lend her voice to the festivities. She is glad to sing either alone or with others. In fact, her inclination is to emphasize another's performance, maybe Wynn? with an Aid Other action.
"My voice will do," she claims shyly, "but I am no bard." She bows to Wynn, offering him the chance to lead. Either way, she enjoys the music.
[OOC: Perform check roll is 19 -- Cassandra is surprised at how well she's done tonite! That gives a +2 to Wynn's roll if he likes.]
Thram Monday April 28th, 2003 3:34:38 PM
Thram claps along with the song. He's happy with the way events transpired and pleased to have had the chance to meet some satyrs. He's never seen one before, afterall.
He briefly eyes Andrath and Lorth but decides not to worry about whatever their problem is. A pair of potions that Cassandra likely brewed herself along with sharing a jovial night by a fire seems like a better deal than a fight any day of the week to the monk. It's not like they gave in and handed the satyrs all of the party's gold.
Even so, Thram doesn't fully trust the satyrs and keeps an eye on his money pouches. He'd hate to get robbed and have to fight afterall.
Kedarn Monday April 28th, 2003 6:16:12 PM
Sitting back and enjoying the music Kedarn smiles as if he is remembering a time in his childhood.
Quiet Night and Peacefull Travels (ADM Dominic) d20+9=14 Monday April 28th, 2003 6:30:51 PM
The satyrs join in the performance with a set of pipes, giving a soothing melody in the background to Cassandra's singing and Wynn's playing. When the song has ended the party feels very relaxed. At this point the satyrs get up and nod to Wynn and Cassandra then say "that was a very enjoyable song you performed." Afterwards they will accept the two potions and head off into the woods leaving the party.
The rest of the night goes by rather quietly and quickly with no further interruptions. Once morning comes and the party sets off, they can feel a slight sense of magic in the air. After walking for about half an hour the party comes to a circle with a spring feeding a stream.
Which way shall you go....
Garrard Monday April 28th, 2003 7:03:39 PM
Garrard carefully notes the types of vegetation, animal tracks, and memories of his teachings as the group travels. As he has any conclusions about the proper path or any dangers they might meet, he relays the information to the group.
(Take 20 on wilderness lore: 27)
After finishing his comments (if any) Garrard says, "If we encounter other faerie creatures, I would suggest we remain calm, and be careful about what gifts or agreements are made. Sometimes these beings operate under very different rules of magic and conduct than we do."
Wynn Brightsong Monday April 28th, 2003 10:27:27 PM
Wynn wakes up rested. At the first opportunity the bard turns to Cassandra and compliments her on her beautiful singing voice: "We will have to sing together again when we return to Jarlswolf, if not sooner."
When the party stops at the stream, Wynn looks expectantly at the young witch and enquires: "Do you know this place?"
Cadmar Tuesday April 29th, 2003 5:26:12 AM
Cadmar looks around the forest. "Does that stream issue from the caves we are looking for? If so, we should follow upstream."
Lorth d20+4=19 Tuesday April 29th, 2003 8:11:34 AM
(OOC: If the singing, put any kind of magical effect on me, even positive, I would like a save against it, as Lorth will not accept anything from persons who call themselves friends and extort you anyway. I'll make a will save just in case, Will: 19)
Lorth follows along, weapons stowed away.
Cassandra Tuesday April 29th, 2003 9:38:28 AM
The young witch exclaims pertly to Wynn, "Of course I know this place! I haven't been leading us blindly! And if you didn't know I was leading, that's because I am subtle about it!"
She says this with a smile.
Then Cassandra reaches into her back pack and withdraws a scroll. This she unrolls and reads carefully.
"Oops! I forgot!" she exclaims as she reads. "We aren't supposed to light fires in the Culverwood. I guess we got away with it last night, but we should not do so again!"
"Silly me! I really should have remembered that!"
"You are right about those rules of conduct, Garrard. As it turns out, we're not supposed to injure natural animal or plant while we are here, either!"
To Cadmar, she says, "The spring wells up in this place -- this is its source." She looks again at her scroll. "We have to follow this stream for two days."
She returns the scroll to her pack. "That's easy enough."
Thram Tuesday April 29th, 2003 11:22:18 AM
Thram walks along quietly again the next morning. He did enough talking last night to last for a week or two. He takes pleasure in walking through the magical wood. There are some fine things about living in a town, but the solitude of the forest appeals to him as well.
Elerinn Tuesday April 29th, 2003 3:11:49 PM
Elerinn wok up this morning from a good night, and feels totally healthy again. With the beautyfull songs, performed by the satyrs, Wynn and Cassandra, still in his head, Elerinn cheerfully follows Cassandra along the stream.
Kedarn Tuesday April 29th, 2003 5:17:06 PM
Kedarn walks along with the party while looking around at the forest.
Stream followed and lost... (ADM Dominic) Tuesday April 29th, 2003 5:25:10 PM
Following the directions Cassandra gives the party, you start following the stream. The first day following the stream you travel along at a reasonable pace using game trails that follow the stream. As dusk starts you come across a place that looks like you could set up a camp at. Continue or break for the night??
Wynn Brightsong Tuesday April 29th, 2003 9:37:46 PM
Wynn follows Cassandra along the stream and game trails. He had not meant to question either her navigation or her local knowledge, only to suggest she lead the way.
As the day wears on and the light wanes, Wynn is reminded of a song he heard at a competition near Magpie Crossing. The bard who had sang it, Seth Tull, had won first prize. Wynn sang the verses as he walked.
Keep your eyes open and prick up your ears- Rehearse your loudest cry There's folks out there who would do you harm So I'll sing you no lullaby There's a lock on the window, there's a chain on the door; a big dog in the hall But there's dragons and beasties out there in the night to snatch you if you fall.
So come out fighting with your rattle in hand Thrust and parry. Light a match to catch the devil's eye. Bring a cross of fire to the fight.
And let no sleep bring false relief from the tension of the fray. Come wake the dead with the scream of life. Do battle with ghosts at play.
Gather your toys at the call-to-arms and swing your big bear down Upon our necks when we come to set you sleeping safe and sound.
It's as well we tell you no lie to chase the face that cries ~ And little birds can't fly so keep an open eye. Its as well we tell you no lie so I'll sing you no lullaby.
Wynn stops to lean against one of the larger trees beside the trail and asks with a grin,
"So, who wants to stop for the night, or has my little verse worried you?"
Lorth Wednesday April 30th, 2003 8:35:22 AM
"I'm in favor of a good rest, but I should probably be taken out of the watch if we can't light a fire. I'm useless in the dark, under canopy of trees.", Lorth decides.
Cadmar Wednesday April 30th, 2003 9:32:53 AM
"Let's hope for a full moon, then."
"What a cheerful song, Wynn. Especially the part about dragons and monsters. Let's double the watches again, shall we? I am no elf, but my ears are keen. I could probably hear danger closing before it is upon us."
"If we stop now, I will take the third watch."
Cassandra Wednesday April 30th, 2003 9:46:00 AM
Cassandra clearly enjoys the music. Afterward she hums the tune to herself, trying to remember it.
"I'm ready for a rest," the witch says later. "I'll stand first watch, like before."
Thram Wednesday April 30th, 2003 11:13:14 AM
After a long day of walking along in silence, Thram offers, "I don't mind having the middle watch again."
Andrath Wednesday April 30th, 2003 12:36:15 PM
Andrath agrees with stopping for the night. "Let's keep the same watches that we had the night before, alright?"
Garrard Wednesday April 30th, 2003 1:06:27 PM
Garrard is clearly happier and seemingly more alive after even several hours in the forest.
"Retaining the watch plan sounds reasonable to me."
Kedarn Wednesday April 30th, 2003 6:05:17 PM
Kedarn agrees with making a cold camp for the evening. "I will take last watch" Kedarn adds.
Stream Lost (ADM Dominic) Wednesday April 30th, 2003 6:12:44 PM
The night goes by peacefully. Throughout the night everyone has seen lights in the distance fade in and out randomly. The next day you continue following the stream for most of the day and then it disappears underground leaving no trace. Which way do you go?
Garrard Wednesday April 30th, 2003 8:32:09 PM
Garrard looks to Cassandra for guidance.
Wynn Brightsong Wednesday April 30th, 2003 8:37:51 PM
Wynn stops where the stream goes beneath the ground. He lies down on the soft pine needles, his head resting on his pack, and with a mischievious grin addresses the witch...
"Wake me when you have figured out where we are."
Wynn closes his eyes and feigns sleep.
Andrath Wednesday April 30th, 2003 11:25:14 PM
Andrath has a look at the spot where the stream disappears underground, trying to figure out if there is a cave entrance, or some other opening.
Cadmar Thursday May 1st, 2003 4:19:09 AM
"Well, great."
"Uless you have a better idea, we might continue in the general direction the stream was heading for a couple of hours, and then I could look for a deer trail or something like that. The stream most likely emerges from the ground somewhere close, and game most likely comes to it to quench its thirst."
Lorth Thursday May 1st, 2003 8:12:38 AM
Lorth quiet as ever, follows along.
Cassandra Thursday May 1st, 2003 10:12:59 AM
The young witch again consults her scroll.
"Yes, your intuition is right, Cadmar," she says, smiling. "We should walk about an hour west. But them comes the part I dread -- climbing down the cliff to the cave! But that's what I have you guys for!"
Thram Thursday May 1st, 2003 10:28:02 AM
After hearing about the cliff, Thram rummages around in one of the mule's saddlebags and pulls out some rope. He measures off about 50 feet.
"Hope its a short cliff or that someone else has some more rope."
Elerinn Thursday May 1st, 2003 2:14:45 PM
Elerinn is glad when he hears Cassandra talk about the dangerous cliff, because the long walks really started to irritate him. He manages to bring up a little smile when Wynn lies down, but it is clear that the gnome isn't used to long trips.
Kedarn Thursday May 1st, 2003 4:17:40 PM
"Thram, I have some rope as well." Kedarn says.
Looking for a waterfall (ADM Dominic) d20=19 d8=7 Thursday May 1st, 2003 4:23:03 PM
The party heads out in the direction that the stream was flowing. After about 45 minutes the group begins to wonder if they are still going the right direction.
Wilderness lore or Intuit Direction check please.
Wynn Brightsong d20+1=6 Thursday May 1st, 2003 7:35:01 PM
Wynn follows Cassandra and the party, occasionally glancing up through the trees to try to judge the position of the sun, and their direction. [Intuit direction=6] In the end, Wynn simply follows Cassandra and the party, unable to tell if they are headed in the right direction, but assured that the witch knows her way.
"I too have a length of rope, as well as a grappling hook should we need it" He replies to Thram's inquiry.
Garrard d20+7=26 Thursday May 1st, 2003 8:08:15 PM
As he walks, Garrard examines the growth patterns of the plants and moss, trying to determine direction to keep them on track.
(wilderness lore: 26)
Andrath Friday May 2nd, 2003 1:02:09 AM
Andrath, being out of his element in the forest, waits to hear what the others in the party suggest.
Cadmar Friday May 2nd, 2003 4:17:40 AM
Cadmar, seeing the confidence with which Garrard leads the party, is content to walk along and enjoy the views.
"Are we far from the destination? Because the mule won't make it down the cliff. We will have to look for some other way, or leave her behind..."
Lorth Friday May 2nd, 2003 9:19:48 AM
"I also have rope if needed, let me know."
Thram Friday May 2nd, 2003 11:17:37 AM
Out for a leisurely stroll, Thram doesn't try to figure out where the group is. He's content to let Cassandra choose the way unless she asks for help.
Cassandra Friday May 2nd, 2003 11:41:05 AM
The young witch sticks to the middle of the group, watching and enjoying the woods.
Kedarn Friday May 2nd, 2003 4:06:14 PM
Kedarn just continues to walk along following Garrard's directions on which way to go.
Waterfall with a Beautiful view... (ADM Dominic) Friday May 2nd, 2003 4:14:51 PM
Garrard notices that the party has strayed from the correct direction and adjusts the groups course. After about 20 minutes more of walking the group walk out into an opeming in the forest. They see that they are at the top of a cliff that has a waterfall coming out of a cave opening about 50' down the cliff.
OOC: Where are the animal companions and familiars?
Garrard Friday May 2nd, 2003 7:25:26 PM
Upon reaching the cliff, Garrard carefully transfers his hawk from its usual place on his shoulder to his leather-braced left arm before shrugging off his pack. Once the pack is on the ground, he pulls out a coil of coarse and heavy mariners rope, some fifty feet in length.
"Anyone particularly skilled in scaling such surfaces, or perhaps knows a levitation spell to manage this process?"
Cadmar Saturday May 3rd, 2003 4:57:29 AM
"Maybe we should leave most of our provisions here, as well as our beast of burden? You know, make a camp? If we lower everything down the cliff we might not be able to lift it up again. Cassandra, do you have any idea how long it might take us to find and harvest the plant? A day? A couple of hours? It might not be wise to leave our stuff unattended. How deep do you think are these caves anyway?"
Lorth Saturday May 3rd, 2003 11:30:24 AM
Lorth unshoulders his pack and digs out his silk rope. "Let me know if you need this", he says.
Andrath d20+7=18 d20+8=14 d20+9=13 Saturday May 3rd, 2003 10:35:09 PM
Andrath swings off his pack, and rummages around in it, finally pulling out a long coil of silk rope. "I have 100' of silk rope, that should be more than enough to lower me down." He makes a simple rope harness and puts it on, then gives the other end to a couple of the brawnier characters in the party. "I will climb down the cliff, so just be ready to catch me with the rope if I fall. OK?"
Assuming that they grab the rope, Andrath swings over the side, and climbs down to the cave entrance [OOC: Climb roll of 18]. He uses his lowlight vision to peer into the cave, looking for trouble [Spot roll 14, Search roll 13]. If he sees anything immediately dangerous, he calls out to the rope-holders to haul him up as quickly as possible. Otherwise, he will swing himself into the cave, and have a better look around.
Wynn Brightsong d20-1=17 Saturday May 3rd, 2003 11:26:58 PM
Wynn takes off his pack and lowers it to the mouth of the cave, then following the lead of Andrath, he secures the line about his body and repels down the face of the cliff after ensuring that the rope is firmly secured above him. [climb=17]
When Wynn reaches the cave mouth he retrieves his pack and presses against the wall. He is ready to assist the next person down the rope.
Elerinn Sunday May 4th, 2003 5:56:14 PM
When Elerinn looks down the rather deep cliff, he curses himself for wishing some excitement, and for not being able to cast any helpfull spell here. While Andrath and Wynn couragely climb down, Elerinn slowly unpacks his backpack, thinking of the last time he had climbed into a tree. And, right after this, the painfull memory of his fall.
Elerinn strokes the raven on his shoulder, and whispers to the animal: "I wish I had your wings, Qamaro. You know I can work this magic for high jumps, but I have nothing for deep falls, my friend..."
Thram Sunday May 4th, 2003 5:59:29 PM
Thram lets Jenny the mule follow along with the group at her own pace, but he'll use the rope on her harness to guide her along if necessary. When the group arrives at the cliff, he ties her to a tree and puts down some feed and water.
He walks over and looks down the cliff, enjoying the view for a moment. He doesn't bother to get out any rope since the group has enough to go around, and he mentioned already that he had some.
When Andrath starts to head over the side, Thram takes the other end of the rope and braces himself. If there's a tree or stump close enough to the edge, he'll wrap the rope around it once to help make his task easier.
Cassandra Monday May 5th, 2003 9:17:02 AM
"All I know is that the plants are in the cave. Be careful not to step on them!"
She stands and watches the activity approvingly.
Kedarn Monday May 5th, 2003 4:54:07 PM
Kedarn will help secure the ropes that are being used to climb down to the cave.
"Is the cave large enough for all of us? I will stay up here if it is not." Kedarn tells the others.
Entering the Cave (ADM Dominic) d20+14=20 Monday May 5th, 2003 5:05:23 PM
As Andrath and Wynn enter the cave the others wait at the top to see if they need help getting back up.
Andrath and Wynn see that the cave is 20' wide and that the stream is 10' wide with room at the sides. you see several plants growing in the cave about 10' back from the cave opening.
How far into the cave do you go? and how many come down to the cave?
Cassandra Monday May 5th, 2003 6:13:55 PM
"I think I'll stay up here," the witch says. "At least until you all check it out."
"But if anyone needs help, I might have a climbing potion ..."
Andrath d20+8=17 d20+8=9 d20+9=24 Monday May 5th, 2003 8:00:10 PM
Andrath gains his footing at the edge of the cave, and slowly scans the area before proceeding in. He remains in his rope harness just in case, preferring the option to retreat quickly. Precautions taken, he makes a search of the mouth of the cave, being very careful not to trample any greenery underfoot.
(spot check: 17 (adjusted to 22 for eyes of the eagle), listen check: 9, search check: 24)
Wynn Brightsong Monday May 5th, 2003 10:39:57 PM
Confident in Andrath's ability to scout out the tunnel, Wynn calls to the party, addressing the young witch: "Cassandra! There are plants growing down here, but how do we know if they are the Salmonberry you seek? Perhaps you or the druid could come down to identify the root you seek?"
Whynn pauses, then calls up again: "At the very least, please send down the collection cases in your pack, and provide some instructions on how to safely harvest the specimens you require."
Garrard d20+3=15 Tuesday May 6th, 2003 2:06:37 AM
Garrard drops his pack to the ground ties his rope to hevay stump nearby, and to himself as a safety with about thirty feet of rope. He then utters a quiet prayer to Mother Wold, and shimmies down the rope.
(Guidance spell, climb check: 15)
Cadmar Tuesday May 6th, 2003 6:15:08 AM
"Well, we can't just all go down there. Somebody needs to stay up and help with the ropes."
Cadmar walks to the edge of the cliff and helps with lowering others down.
Lorth Tuesday May 6th, 2003 7:39:19 AM
Lorth puts his rope away and helps Cadmar.
Thram Tuesday May 6th, 2003 10:29:06 AM
Thram offers to stay up at the top, and he checks out the view from the cliff until somebody needs him.
Kedarn Tuesday May 6th, 2003 5:46:08 PM
"I'll just stay up here." Kedarn says as he stays out of the way.
In and Out of The Cave (ADM Dominic) d20+14=31 Tuesday May 6th, 2003 6:03:31 PM
Andrath as you look around carefully not steping on any plants, you see several spider webs about 20' back in from the entrance of the cave. These spider webs go all the way across the cave and into the water. Garrard makes it down to the cave opening and into the cave with Wynn and Andrath.
Thram watches lights wink in and out off in the distance in the woods near the base of the cliff.
Garrard d20+7=8 Tuesday May 6th, 2003 6:53:03 PM
Garrard gains his footing, unties the rope, and immediately unslings his shield. Then, he draws his scimitar, and begins to look around the floor of the cave, trying to identify the plants, and the Salmonberry, from the description Cassandra gave him back in town. Even as he looks over the floor, his knuckles whiten on the grip of his scimitar.
(Wilderness Lore: 8. Begin to take ten on search)
Wynn Brightsong d20+3=6 d20+2=19 Tuesday May 6th, 2003 11:03:28 PM
Wynn moves over to one side of the cave in order to make room for the big druid. He silently watches Garrard. Noticing the human's caution, Wynn loosens his longsword from it's scabbard and rests his hand lightly upon the hilt.
He casts a quick glance in the direction of the spider webs, but doesn't see much. As his eyes grow accustomed to the gloom, he carefully surveilles the area looking for any signs of movement.
(Search=6, Spot=19)
Cadmar Wednesday May 7th, 2003 5:48:51 AM
His feet planted firmly on the ground, Cadmar lowers the rope. Feeling that others have already made it to the bottom of the cliff, he ties the rope to a trunk of a nearby tree (choosing a strong one, if at all possible). Then he stretches himself on the ground and looks down the cliff face.
Lorth d20+1=5 Wednesday May 7th, 2003 8:00:44 AM
Lorth sits at the top of the cliff, watching the surrounding area intently since he cannot see in the cave, although he can't see much passed the tree cover. (Spot: 5)
Cassandra d20-1=1 Wednesday May 7th, 2003 9:40:43 AM
The young witch stands near the cliff edge (five or ten feet away) and answers Wynn, repeating the description of the plant that she gave before.
"The plant is low and bush-like. The berries are small and red. The leaves are broad, silver-green on top, and silver-white on the underside."
She listens very carefully but hears nothing. She takes out her bow and readies an arrow, just in case.
Andrath d20+13=21 Wednesday May 7th, 2003 12:46:20 PM
Andrath steps behind Wynn and Garrard, unlimbering his bow and nocking an arrow. Adopting a stance of vigilance, he stands ready to intercept anything that might jump or leap from the web with an arrow.
(Spot check: 21)
Elerinn Wednesday May 7th, 2003 4:42:36 PM
Elerinn is actually quite glad when he hears Cassandra will not descend into the cave. He quietly waits for any signals from the people below. He hopes, for various reasons, that there is nothing inside that could hinder them in their little mission.
Kedarn Wednesday May 7th, 2003 4:59:03 PM
Kedarn continues staying out of the way and ready to help as needed.
Salmonberry found (ADM Dominic) Wednesday May 7th, 2003 5:04:37 PM
Andrath continues to scan the area for possible threats and sees the webs but no spiders. Garrard and Wynn find that the plant that is all over the area matches the description that Cassandra called down.
Wynn Brightsong Wednesday May 7th, 2003 11:28:44 PM
"Well, friend" Wynn says to Garrard "I do believe we have found the plants in question. The bard takes out a dagger, and crouching down starts to poke around at the dirt in order to uncover the root. "It is the root we are after, right?"
Garrard Thursday May 8th, 2003 12:56:08 AM
Garrard sets down his shield, and takes an empty pouch off his belt.
"Yes, it is. However, Cassandra said to take it whole, which I assume also requires a section of the surrounding soil, especially if it has a fine or branching root structure."
With that, Garrard very carefully and slowly goes about harvesting the soil around the plant, and the Salmonberry, according the instructions Cassandra supplied back in the village.
Cadmar Thursday May 8th, 2003 4:50:19 AM
Cadmar starts drumming his fingers nervously on a nearby rock. "I really hope nothing unpleasant happens to them. I will go down if they need me, but, rope or no rope, traversing that cliff is not something I would be willing to do for fun."
Lorth d20+1=14 Thursday May 8th, 2003 7:53:31 AM
Lorth continues his watch of the surrounding countryside. (Spot: 14)
Cassandra Thursday May 8th, 2003 9:09:08 AM
The witch calls down sweetly, "Yoo hoo! If it is safe in the cave, I'll come down to help gather the plants!"
"Don't start without me!"
Thram Thursday May 8th, 2003 11:52:37 AM
Thram studies the blinking lights for a few moments, and then he points them out to everyone up top. "You guys see that blinking light over there? Do you think it's a signal mirror? Be on the lookout for anything."
Thram takes out his bow and nocks an arrow, just in case.
Kedarn Thursday May 8th, 2003 3:18:34 PM
Kedarn walks over to Thram and looks in the direction he is pointing. "I think I see the light you are talking about, are they the same as the lights we saw while walking here."
Andrath Thursday May 8th, 2003 3:23:51 PM
Andrath, seeing no immediate danger, eases his drawn bow, puts the arrow back in its quiver, and slings his bow. He then turns, and steadies the rope for Cassandra to make her descent.

As Thram points out the lights down near the base of the cliff you see them dissappear and then reappear about 30' south of where they were. The lights look like flickering torches in the distance.
Just after Andrath grabs hold of the rope to help Cassandra down, those in the cave hear a faint clicking noise from about 10' further into the cave. A split second later several small spiders attack. Three attack Wynn and Andrath while 4 attack Garrard. The three attacking Andrath spread out to attack from multiple directions (dmg 3 + poison (make a save vs DC 11 twice)). (balance check DC 15) The three attacking Wynn drop from the cave ceiling and attack Wynn (dmg 2 + poison (make a save vs DC 11 twice)). The four attacking Garrard spring from the cave ceiling attacking Garrard (dmg 6 + poison (make a save vs DC 11 four times)).

Elerinn d20=10 d20-2=15 Thursday May 8th, 2003 5:47:15 PM
Just when Elerinn was about to say he totally agreed with Cadmar about descending down the cliff, he hears strange noises below, and in his short time of adventuring, he has already learned what these mean: the others were fighting bellow.
Without any hesitation, Elerinn unpacks his backpack and walks to the rope, trying to climb down quickly and help those below.
Climb: 8 (The second roll was a mistake)
Thram Thursday May 8th, 2003 8:35:16 PM
Thram calls out, "Do you need help in there?"
Seeing Elerinn heading down the rope he adds, "Let us know if there's room for everyone in the cave."
Lorth d20=7 Thursday May 8th, 2003 9:38:20 PM

Wynn Brightsong (AC17; HP5 left) d20+1=6 d20+1=18 Thursday May 8th, 2003 11:12:56 PM
Bent over his task of harvesting the Salmonberry, Wynn is oblivious to the spiders dropping from the cave cieling. The sting of the arachnid's bite, followed by the burn of poison takes his breath away.
Poison Saves 6, 18 - one failure vs DC11
Cadmar d20-2=4 Friday May 9th, 2003 8:34:31 AM
"What!? Oh no!" It takes Cadmar a moment to realize what's going on. "Hide in the water if it's deep enough! Hold on, we are coming!"
The ranger drops his backpack to the ground, and, assuming there is a rope nobody is using right now [OOC I lost count of how many ropes we tied to the trees], starts climbing down [Climb 4, uh oh, I hope it's not a fall. If it's a fall that would kill Cadmar, I want to use hero point to reroll climb check].
Cassandra d4+1=5 Friday May 9th, 2003 10:58:18 AM
Cassandra realizes that Andrath, Wynn, and Garrard are in the cave fighting something. She sees Lorth and Elerinn climb down the two ropes, followed by Cadmar, who seems to be having a slow time of it.
Only she and Thram are left on top. She offers Thram a potion of spider climbing, if he wants it. She herself drinks a potion of Endurance, adding 5 to her Con score. Then she checks to make sure the ropes are secure and no enemy is approaching from behind.
[OOC: Dominic, looking over Cassandra's PC sheet, I see I made major mistakes in it. I'm sending you a revised sheet asap. Sorry!]
[More OOC: Rope-climbing info: The standard DC to climb a rope with a wall is 5. If you fail, you make no progress. If you fail by five or more, you fall. That's the standard info; our DM may have different rules for this circumstance.]
Kedarn Friday May 9th, 2003 3:43:18 PM
Kedarn hurries over to Cassandra and asks "do you have anything to help us get down to them?"
Andrath's smart thinking earlier saves him from a long fall. Andrath falls 10' before the harness catches his fall and stops him (1 round to get back to the cave.) The spiders that attacked Andrath start to climb the walls of the cave.
The spiders attacking Wynn try to bite him but miss. The spiders attacking Garrard one succeeds in biting him in the leg (dmg 1 + poison) (save vs DC 11).
*** Climbing down the rope at normal climbing rate it will take Lorth 3 rounds and Elerinn 4 rounds to make it down to the cave. If you try to climb at accelerated speed it will take Lorth 2 rounds and Elerinn 3 rounds to reach the cave. ***
Garrard d20+2=12 d6+2=5 d20+3=5 Friday May 9th, 2003 6:49:29 PM
Garrard growls and lashes out with his scimitar, panting and trying to blink the pain away. A halfhearted swing looks like it might connect with one of the spiders (dc: 12 for a potential 5 pts of damage). Yet, shivering continues to overtake Garrard (failed save).

As soon as he gains his footing, he draws his longsword.
Wynn Brightsong (AC18; HP5; Str-1) d20-3=6 Friday May 9th, 2003 9:09:54 PM
Wynn backs away from the spiders, careful to keep his back to the cave wall and to not get too close to the entrance. He yells up to the rest of the party "Quickly, we have been attacked by spiders!"
Wynn readies his sword and shield, his back to the wall, and strikes at any spider that ventures within his range [hits AC=6; fighting defensively +2AC=20]and dodges any returned attack from that same spider [additional +1AC=21]
Cadmar Saturday May 10th, 2003 4:46:04 AM
The ranger tries to scale the rock face, slips immediately after he makes it over the edge of the cliff, and almost falls down. Beads of sweat appear on his brow as he realizes that the weight of his chain might pull him down to certain death. Still, his friends need help, and need it now. Climbing will take too much time.
Cadmar wraps the rope around his left leg three times, reaches down for a fold of his cloak to protect his hands, kicks himself away from the wall, and starts to slide down the rope, pushing himself away from the cliff with his elbows and knees, and gritting his teeth in expectation of the shock of multiple impacts along the way.
He will start slowing down WELL before the rope ends.
Elerinn d20-2=1 d20-2=5 Sunday May 11th, 2003 1:52:59 PM
Elerinn continues to climb down the rope, somewhat amazed that he indeed makes progress. His fear of climbing down the mountain has left him when he heard help was needed, but he still remains cautious, because he knows he is not the best climber.
(Climb roll: 1, I'm using a hero point to reroll it to a 5, just climbing down at normal speed)
Cassandra Sunday May 11th, 2003 11:30:15 PM

Thram takes the potion of spider climb and quaffs it down. Then he grabs the two vials of antitoxin and runs over to the ledge to sit down and take off his shoes for the potion to be effective.
He's about to crawl headfirst over the side of the cliff when he pauses to look back at Cassandra, "Are you sure this stuff works?"
Then he heads over the side getting as far as he can.
Kedarn d20-1=10 Monday May 12th, 2003 4:31:40 PM
Kedarn takes the potion of spider climb from Cassandra and drinks it down. He then drops down beside Thram and pulls off his boots. Kedarn will then start to climb down to the cave.
** Plants destroyed last round (2) ** Andrath, Garrard and Wynn feel the burn of the poison coursing through their bodies.
Andrath makes it back into the cave and sees 3 spiders continuing to attack Wynn and 4 still attacking Garrard.
Cadmar slides down the rope 30' and will reach the cave entrance on the next round. While Lorth climbs down another 15' and will also reach the cave on the next round. Elerinn continues to climb down and will reach the cave in 2 rounds. Both Thram and Kedarn start to climb down the cliff face and get 15'. They will both reach the cave in 3 rounds.

Wynn swings at the first spider that threatens either the fallen druid or himself [hits AC16, for 6 dmg; 2nd roll was for failed critical hit] and then does his best to dodge any attack from that same spider [AC=21].
"Garrard is down" the bard yells out to any in listening distance, "we need some help down here rights away, and for Domi's sake, watch those plants or Cassandra will be going home empty handed!"
The bards voice is edged and raspy, betraying his exertion at fighting the spiders and his concern for the welfare of Andrath, Garrard and himself.
Lorth (AC: 16 HP: 13) d20=17 Tuesday May 13th, 2003 8:50:49 AM
Lorth continues to slide down the rope, as soon as he hits the ground he draws his warhammer and runs into the cave. He looks around quickly for the nearest threatening creature...
(Climb check is: 17) (OOC: Not sure if I can swing this round, if I can, go ahead and roll it Dominic)
Cadmar AC15 HP11 Tuesday May 13th, 2003 9:43:32 AM

Cassandra d20+3=14 Tuesday May 13th, 2003 10:21:49 AM
The witch quickly ponders her options, but all her magic requires a touch. "Well, then," she tells herself, "I had better get down there in touching range!"
She climbs down the least occupied rope, making her dex check easily.
Kedarn (spider climb) d20-1=10 Tuesday May 13th, 2003 4:26:56 PM
Kedarn continues to climb down the cliff face towards the cave as quickly as he can. (climb 10)
Cadmar and Lorth both arrive to see Garrard drop to the ground. (you are both 10' from Garrard.) Andrath closes on the spiders around Wynn and misses. Wynn swings at the spider directly in front of him and hits it and killing it while moving to try to cover Garrard.
Elerinn will make it to the cave next round. Cassandra will make it in 3 rounds. Thram and Kedarn will make it in 2 rounds.

Fighting past unresponsive muscles and burning bites, Garrard manages to get enough of the wand clear of its sheath to activate it and tap his leg.
Even as the healing warmth floods his body, Garrard tries to play dead, lying still, hoping his body shields some of the nearby plants from more damage.
(One charge expended: 8pts healed.)

Cassandra Tuesday May 13th, 2003 6:32:17 PM
The witch keeps climbing down the rope. (second round of climbing)
Thram Tuesday May 13th, 2003 6:39:23 PM
Continuing on down the side of the cliff headfirst, Thram eyes the long drop and asks, "Hey, how long will this stuff work?"
When he gets to the cave opening, he'll stop at the top and shoot arrows through while hanging upside down. Maybe that will get him there a round faster, eh?
Wynn Brightsong (AC18; HP4; Str-1) d20+1=13 d20-3=17 d20-3=8 d8+1=3 Tuesday May 13th, 2003 9:08:48 PM
Wynn swings his longsword at an attacking spider, its blade sings as it cuts through the air and slices deep into the abdomen odf the creature. A second spider manages to sink it's fangs into him. The poison burns but seems to have no lasting effect [save vs DC 13].
Wynn continues to defend the prone druid, and swings at the nearest attacking spider [fighting defensively AC=20, hit AC 17 for 3 dmg, failed critical]. Wynn dodges the nearest spider should it counter attack [AC=21].
The half-elf notes the presence of Lorth and Cadmar in the cave and he calls out to them, "Hurry, these things are getting the upper hand, but watch out for the flowers!"

Lorth (AC: 16 HP: 12) d20+8=11 d20+3=22 d8+2=5 Wednesday May 14th, 2003 7:20:01 AM
Lorth stops moving as the spiders turn to attack him, the poison burns as it seeps into his leg, but he manages to shrug it off. (POISON SAVE: 11) Shield low, he swings his warhammer at the spider that bit him. (HIT AC 22 FOR 5 DAMAGE) The spider makes a crunching sound as he connects.
Cadmar AC15 HP11 d20+4=18 d6=6 Wednesday May 14th, 2003 8:58:48 AM
Cadmar, his eyes not yet accustomed to the darkness of the cave, decides to go against the spiders he can see well - the ones that attacked him and Lorth. As he takes a quick step in the direction of Lorth [5ft step] drawing his scimitar [move equivalent action], he shouts in a clear voice: "Tumbarátar! Cirar calmacili!" The blade strikes true, taking one of the spiders off Lorth's back [Hits AC18, added +2 flanking bonus from Lorth, damage 6].
Elerinn d20-2=5 d20+4=7 d20-2=9 d4+1=2 Wednesday May 14th, 2003 2:43:18 PM
Elerinn, looking at the two others who have just entered the caves, hurries to cover the last feet he is away from the entrance.
For one, very short moment, Elerinn realizes that he hasn't been afraid during this descend. Strangely enough, this leaves him with a feeling of fear: fear of looking down, of knowing he will.
But before this can actually happen, Elerinn has reached the rope's tail and looks inside the cave. When he sees Garrard lying unconsciouly, or worse, on the ground, he grabs the rope tight with one of his hands and starts gesturing and speaks an incantation. Right after that, a colored ball leaves his free hand and hits one of the spiders near Garrard and Wynn.
OOC: Trying to cast a magic missile, while holding the rope with one hand. I suppose I should roll a Concentration check and I also rolled another Climb check, just in case. If the thing Elerinn is trying to do is impossible, he will first land on the cave floor before casting the spell

Andrath stops in his tracks as he is disabled from wounds. Wynn connects with one of the spiders and kills it while protecting Garrard. Lorth and Cadmar wade into the fight successfully killing one spider each. Elerinn's magic missle flies in and strikes a spider causing it to hesitate in its move. Cassandra is 2 rounds from reaching the cave entrance on the same rope as Elerinn. Thram and Kedarn will reach the cave entrance on the next round. Garrard covers up a plant with his shield protecting it from being destroyed. The spiders that have been attacking Andrath turn and two of them attack Lorth and one goes to attack Wynn. One of the spiders attacking Lorth hits (dmg 1 + poison). (make save vs DC 11) Both spiders attacking Cadmar hit (dmg 2 + poison). (make save vs DC 11 twice) Both spiders attacking Wynn miss.
Wynn Brightsong (AC18; HP4; Str-1) d20-3=8 Wednesday May 14th, 2003 8:26:52 PM
Wynn'spirits are buoyed by the appearance of Lorth, Cadmar and Elerinn and by their immediate success in dispatching a number of the spiders. Before he can shout a welcome to his companions he is attacked by two more spiders but is able to avoid being bitten.
Wynn swings in retaliation at the second spider but fails to connect [fighting defensively AC=20] and prepares to dodge any counter attack from his foe [AC 21].
"Someone help Andrath" Wynn shouts, "I'll stay with Garrard until he's up!" Wynn returns his attention to the spiders and calls to them..."Tula, feuyae, gurth ed amincam!" ("Come, disgusting ones, die by my hand")
Lorth (AC: 16 HP: 11) d20+8=28 d20+3=11 Wednesday May 14th, 2003 8:45:42 PM

Andrath continues to stagger back, trusting on his friends to protect him, until he can get some healing and rejoin the fight. He stops short of the cave mouth, and steps to one side. "Medic," he whispers feebly.
Thram Wednesday May 14th, 2003 11:03:05 PM
Heads down to the cave entrance and hangs down to shoot when he arrives.
Cadmar AC15 HP9 d20+4=10 d20+4=12 Thursday May 15th, 2003 8:09:52 AM

This takes him right next to Andrath. Suddenly noticing that the man is on a verge of consciousness, Cadmar lends his hand in support, reaches for a healing potion from his pouch, and helps Andrath to drink it [heals 1d8+1, full round action?].

Elerinn feels that someone else is climbing down the rope he is still holding. When he sees Cassandra coming down towards him, he jumps into the cave, so the rope is free for Cassandra to use. After that, he tries to find the spider he shot a few seconds ago and fires a second time at the insect.
Magic Missile damage: 4 Concentration(?): 11
Kedarn (AC. 16 HP:11 Spider Climb) Thursday May 15th, 2003 6:39:17 PM

Elerinn's magic missle streaks in hitting the spider he hit earlier killing it. At this point the rest of the spiders scatter in all directions trying to flee from the party.
Cassandra makes it down to the cave just after the spiders scatter.

Wynn Brightsong (AC18; HP7; Str -1) d20+1=16 d8+1=6 d20+2=10 Thursday May 15th, 2003 7:14:35 PM
Wynn feels a flush of warmth rise through his body as the healing from Garrard's wand takes affect. Before he can exclaim his surprise at Garrard's obvious state of consciousness a large spider scuttles by on its way to the back of the cave. Wynn swings his longsword down on it's body [Hit AC 16 for 6 HP].
As the spiders retreat, Wynn helps Garrard to his feet, careful to avoid trampling any plants in the process. "Garrard, I though you were unconscious! Thank you for the healing touch of your wand".
Wynn sheathes his sword and calls to the others, I think those with bows should remain ready in case the spiders return! The rest of us can collect what plants remain". Wynn scans the surroundings for undamaged plants [Spot=10]
Garrard d20+3=10 d20+7=21 Thursday May 15th, 2003 8:33:09 PM
Garrard gets up careful, uncoiling his body and shield from around the lone Salmonberry he was trying to shield. As he glances around with a saddened sigh, he can't quite meet Cassandra's gaze.
Instead, he bends and turns himself to the search.

Andrath (AC 17, 4 hp, -6 Str) Thursday May 15th, 2003 8:50:58 PM
Andrath says, "Thank you for the potion, Cadmar, it was just what I needed." Not being any good with plants, the elf picks up his sword, and carefully steps around the remaining plants, heading towards the back of the cave. He keeps his eyes open for any spiders to return, and will swing at the closest one if any appear. "Come back here, you hairy eight-legged crawlers. I owe you a couple, even if you don't have any ears to collect."
Cadmar AC17 HP9 -1Str d20+2=18 d6=5 Friday May 16th, 2003 3:46:01 AM
Cadmar slashes at the fleeing spider, and by some strange stroke of luck manages to land another blow [hits AC18 for 5 damage].
"Any time, Andrath. Next time it might be you saving my hide."
The ranger readies his shield and takes a couple of steps deeper into the cave, but then wavers, stops, and sits down, watching his hand with some concern. "Its swollen. And I don't feel good."
"So, are there any plants left?... I hope more than one; it would be pity to remove the last bush from the cave."
Lorth Friday May 16th, 2003 9:20:38 AM
Lorth let's the fleeing spider go. "Does anyone need some wound tending?", he asks. He then heads towards the mouth of the cave, trying not to step on any plants.
Thram Friday May 16th, 2003 11:02:23 AM
When Thram finally arrives in the cave he stays up on the ceiling so that he won't crush anymore plants and announces, "I have antivenom potions from Cassandra if anyone needs one."
Kedarn Friday May 16th, 2003 6:10:11 PM
Kedarn looks around the cave while asking "who needs some healing?"
Picking up the Pieces (ADM Dominic) Friday May 16th, 2003 6:24:45 PM

Andrath shivers as the poison again attacks his system, but he manages to fight most of it off. [OOC: Made 4 of 5 necessary saves] He looks back over his shoulder, and says, "Does anyone have proficiency in healing? You can try to use that skill to help someone fight off the secondary effects of poison. I know that I could use your help to fight off some of this spider poison. [OOC: read the Heal proficiency on page 69 of the PH to see how this works].
"Also, if there is enough of that antivenom available, could I have some? I am very weakened by these spiders' attacks."
While he waits for answers to his requests, Andrath continues to wield his sword and watch the back of the cave to make sure that no other spiders appear. [OOC: Dominic, how many spiders appeared to escape, once all the attacks of opportunity are finished?]
Dominic - two spiders fled.
Cadmar AC17 HP9 -1Str d20+4=12 d20+4=13 Saturday May 17th, 2003 6:36:58 AM
The ranger rolls up his sleeve to look closer at the bite mark. "I'll be all right, I didn't get much of their venom. Save antitoxin for someone else." [both saves successful]
Worried about others, Cadmar moves closer to look at their wounds. Seeing that Garrard is worst off, he offers: "I can help if you want me to. Letting out some of your blood might help." [Dominic, Garrard already rolled his saves, but if Cadmar can still help, he has Heal at +5]
Elerinn Sunday May 18th, 2003 2:54:30 PM
Elerinn looks at Cassandra, entering the cave at the same spot he did moments ago. With an unstable voice, he asks: "Are there enough plants left? It seems many were destroyed..."
Then, Elerinn turns to the others inside the cave and says: "Is everyone allright? For the moment, at least, for these spiders might have poisoned you." Elerinn pauses, looking outside the cave. He considers apologizing for his late arrival, but don't know if he can find the right moment to tell the others.
Lorth d20+8=18 d20+8=25 d20+5=11 Monday May 19th, 2003 9:06:41 AM

(I also have Heal +5 if it can help, Heal Check: 11)
(OOC: question, I thought if you made the first save on a poison save you didn't have to make the secondary, after effects one? But I'll save anyway. Poison saves: 18,25)
Cassandra d20+9=15 d20+5=14 Monday May 19th, 2003 10:11:56 AM
"There is some antitoxin. The two most bitten should take it!"
She looks at the remaining plants and says that she can use what remains. She carefully uproots three and leaves two. She also looks at the berries on the remaining ruined plants, and plants any that seem ripe enough. [Those are her Know[Nature] and Wilderness Lore rolls.]
She also has curing to pass out if needed -- spells and potions.
At last, she says, "Thank you, my friends, for all your help. I could not have done this without you." And she bows.
Thram d20+5=9 Monday May 19th, 2003 11:42:52 AM
Thram gives the antivenom to Andrath and Garrard then he attempts to help with the healing. "I'm not very skilled, but I'll offer what aid I can." He helps Andrath first since he asked, but if the potion works and someone else needs help he'll switch patients.

Thram hands an anti-toxin to Andrath and Garrard. A few minutes after drinking it they feel the burning from the poison start to subside. Everyone has their wounds cleaned and bandaged as to keep them from becoming any worse.
Cassandra you notice that 5 plants have berries that look to be ripe enough that planting the berries from them may give new plants. You also think that possibly one of the others may give you some trimmings that you can try to start a new plant with.
When all the Salmonberry plants are gathered up that are to be taken you notice that it is starting to get near dusk. shall you camp here in the cave or climb to the top of the cliff?
Elerinn Monday May 19th, 2003 6:05:12 PM
Elerinn is glad when Cassandra says there are still enough plants to use, it seems that this trip was fruitfull. When he looks outside, he sees that the sun has already chosen to begin submitting to the night and immediatly he says: "I think we should leave this cave now there is still a bit night. Some of the insects fled, and I wouldn't want to be surprised by a nightly visit by one of these multi-legged monsters who returns..."
"And besides that," Elerinn says, shocked by his own realization, "I left my backpack unguarded at the top of this mountain! I don't know if you agree with leaving this cave, but I'll get my backpack first now..."
Elerinn grabs the rope, but hesitates for a moment. There is nothing to distract him from the thought of falling down right now, no spider can 'help' the small gnome now. But thinking of his possesions inside his backpack above and possible embarrasement, he starts climbing.
(OOC: Taking 10 on my climb check...)
Wynn Brightsong (AC18; HP7; Str-4) d20+2=19 Monday May 19th, 2003 7:09:37 PM
"I am of two minds" the bard says, "I am not looking forward to climbing the cliff in our weakened conditions, yet surely to stay the night will involve dealing with the spiders again."
Wynn peers into the back of the cave to see if he can tell how deep it really is and if the two spiders that fled are nearby [Spot=19].
"If we are to climb the cliff we need to do it now, before nightfall. I would suggest that the strongest and best climbers among us go first and provide assistance to those of us who have been poisoned. If we are to stay the night then we should hunt down the last of the spiders now and secure our sanctuary."
Andrath (AC17, 4 hp, -? Str) d20+9=28 d20+13=21 Monday May 19th, 2003 10:55:59 PM
Andrath takes the antitoxin, with thanks to Cassandra. [OOC: Dominic, what effect does the antitoxin have? Will it repair the Str damage already done? Will it make someone immune to the spider venom for a certain length of time?]
"I agree with Wynn. I think we should clear out the rest of these spiders, bring down some firewood, and set up camp at the front of the cave, provided we can stop from trampling the rest of the salmonberry plants." Andrath wields his sword, and heads farther back into the cave, careful not to step on the few remaining plants, and keeping his eyes peeled for spiders, or perhaps anything else that has been collected back there. [OOC: Search 28, Spot 21]
Dominic - Greg the anti-toxin gives a +5 to Fortitude for a short duration. Time will allow you to recover the Str loss.
Cadmar AC17 HP9 -1Str Tuesday May 20th, 2003 1:38:08 AM
"As much as I am curious what is inside the cave, I think we should return for the night to the top of the cliff. If somebody or something takes the ropes we will be trapped in here. Besides, I left most of my stuff up there, too."
"Come on! I am still strong enough to climb the cliff by myself. If those of you who are weakened just tie yourself around waist with the rope I can pull you up."
Cadmar takes off his chain, folds it, and puts it securely under his belt. Then he carefully climbs up, watching his step all the way [Take 10 on climb, 10 total].
Garrard Tuesday May 20th, 2003 3:28:12 AM
"I believe sleeping atop would be better, but I also will require a few to pull me up. I can make a separate bundle with my shield, weapons, and equipment to make the task easier, if you like."
Lorth d20+2=15 Tuesday May 20th, 2003 8:04:23 AM
"Allow me to climb up and I will help pull up whoever requires assistance. I also think we should leave the rest of the spiders alone, we really did intrude on their cave." (OOC: I think there was 3 ropes) Lorth turns and grabs a free rope and begins to climb back up the cliff. (Climb check: 15)
Cassandra Tuesday May 20th, 2003 10:14:40 AM
The witch decides to take three plants and to leave the others. She does her best to repair damage and make new plantings.
She uses the leather cases from her backpack to store the plants she is gathering. How did those cases all fit in her small backpack?
Cassandra agrees that it is better to climb out of here. "Let us not stress Fragile Nature more than we must."
She also climbs out of the cave, in turn.
Kedarn Tuesday May 20th, 2003 4:04:17 PM
Kedarn looks around then says "I agree lets get out of this cave incase they come back with their big brothers." Kedarn will climb up the rope in turn.
Nights Rest (ADM Dominic) Tuesday May 20th, 2003 4:15:34 PM
Each of the party climbs out of the cave in turn witheveryone helping those that have difficulties. As the night settles in, the party hears the sounds of the forest come to life with the sounds of owls and other nocturnal creatures. During the night those that had suffered from the poison of the spiders sleep extreamely deep. The party awakens with the sounds of thunder in the distance and the start of a light rain coming on.
Which way do you go? back the direction you came or another direction.
OOC: I used the same watch order as the last time the party camped.
Elerinn Tuesday May 20th, 2003 5:01:30 PM
Elerinn opens his eyes as soon as a little drop of rain falls on his nose and is immediatly awake when he hears the roaring thunder nearby. Elerinn instantly forgets his nightmare haunted night and stands up, refreshed and happy.
"Finally!", Elerinn exclames, "a real good Woldian rain!" He prepares for a new day and looks at his father's cloak, already filthy and with numerous tears at the bottom. At least it's adjusted to my size now..., Elerinn thinks, who doesn't seem to mind the rain at all. Elerinn greets Qamaro first and looks at the others, who still seem to be sleeping. Adressed to the raven, but in a loud enough voice to hear, Elerinn says: "I wish I had a book with me right now, my friend. There's nothing like a good rain coupled with a good book!"
Cadmar Tuesday May 20th, 2003 5:35:59 PM
Cadmar stretches and yawns. "Aaah, a good night's rest makes you feel the best. Let's find a stream or something to wash in. How are you doing, people?"
Cadmar starts to whistle a merry little tune and goes looking for water. After a moment he is back, his face and hair washed clean.
"What now? Culverwood is beautiful, but we have a precious cargo to carry."
Garrard Tuesday May 20th, 2003 6:01:41 PM
Garrard wakes slowly, laying for a time with his eyes closed, listening, only a gentle smile betraying his wakeful state. Once he does rise, he walks quietly in several loose circles around the camp, face up into the rain.
On the third revolution, he opens his belt pouch, and pulls out a small red ribbon, something that might adorn a child's hair. Yet, his mein seems hopeful, happy even. Then, he comes back to the group to help tear down the campsite in anticipation of the day's travel.
While waiting for Cassandra to provide direction, Garrard approaches Wynn, asking, "I was curious if you have done any teaching before, or the performing arts?"
Wynn Brightsong Tuesday May 20th, 2003 9:51:47 PM
Wynn awakens to the sounds of the rest of the party breaking camp. He helps the others load the donkey and then sets to removing all traces of the makeshift campsite. It is during this endeavour that he is approached by Garrard who asks about his experience as a teacher and performer.
"No my friend, I have never been a teacher, just a student." Wynn looks uncomfortable but continues, "For a time I was tutored in the ways of a diplomat, at my fathers expense. It was not to my liking and needless to say I did not pursue diplomacy as a career."
The bard reaches into his cloak for a few leaves of tobacco which he crushes and stuffs into a small pipe. With the last few embers of the fire he lights the pipe and the sweet smell of tobacco from exotic lands wafts through the air.
"I have however earned my keep from the performing arts." Wynn draws air through the pipe which glows briefly. "I have prepared poetry for the lovesick and the lecherous, recited questionable limericks for an evening of wine and sustenance, and on more than one occassion I have played a minor role with one of the travelling theatre troupes."
Wynn draws a final breath from the pipe before letting its fire subside. "More than anything though, I enjoy singing the tales of common men who have overcome adversity and acheived great things. This is the great tradition of bards, to preserve the oral history of the people."
Andrath Tuesday May 20th, 2003 10:47:37 PM
Andrath finishes his careful inspection of the cave. [OOC: Dominic, I presume Andrath didn't find anything of interest in searching the cave, since you didn't respond to my post.] He shimmies up the rope and collects it, and swings his backpack off his shoulders, setting up his bedroll for the night. He passes an uneventful night, including his turn at watch.
In the morning, he wakens to a light rain on his face. He rolls out of his bedroll, and says, "Great, the joys of sleeping outdoors. In the city, at least I always had a roof over my head when I woke up."
Realizing a fire here would not be a good idea, Andrath eats a cold breakfast, and washes it down with a drink from the nearby stream. He returns to the campsite, and says, "Unless you have any reason for us to wait here, Cassandra, I suggest we get going. Let's put as much distance as possible between us and this cave; we may have to hole up somewhere if this storm gets too bad."
Lorth Wednesday May 21st, 2003 10:20:33 AM
Lorth wakes up damp, "Ugh... rain. Morning all", he yawns, "How is everyone feeling today?" He then carefully packs all his gear to attempt to keep it from getting more wet. He then dons his armor, stows his weapons and holds his shield above his head.
(OOC: For future reference, if I have my lay on hands still active in the evening and I am hurt I use it on myself. Unless someone else needs it.)
Cassandra Wednesday May 21st, 2003 10:36:19 AM
"I figure the best way to avoid getting lost is to retrace our path," the young witch suggests. "So let us go back to where the stream headed underground, and then follow the stream back."
Cassandra seems to be trying to take the rain in stride, although she keeps wiping water out of her face and eyes.
Thram Wednesday May 21st, 2003 11:32:21 AM
Thram seems unpreturbed by the rain. At least, he doesn't really comment on it one way or the other.
"The same path would seem to make sense. We've seen no signs that anyone is waiting to ambush us or anything like that. Indeed, why would anyone want to?"
Kedarn Wednesday May 21st, 2003 4:21:49 PM
Kedarn cleans himself up and does his morning prayers to Gargul. Upon finishing Kedarn looks around the camp to see what he can do to aid the party clean up the camp. When the camp is cleared away Kedarn will look about then ask "Which way was it that we came from?"
Heading back (ADM Dominic) Wednesday May 21st, 2003 4:26:35 PM
Once the camp is cleared up you notice that the rain has washed away the traces of which direction you came from.
Wilderness lore check please.
*** 1 point of Str loss is recovered from the nights rest. ***
Garrard d20+7=27 Wednesday May 21st, 2003 7:34:15 PM
Doing a quick look around the camp at the nearby vegetation, Garrard considers for a moment, and then points out the placement of several trees and patches of moss. Then, confident in his estimation, he shoulders his pack and asks, "I assume we are headed back, and not to any other destinations?"
Wynn Brightsong d20+1=14 Wednesday May 21st, 2003 9:57:04 PM
Wynn looks at the surrounding terrain and tries to piece together a mental image of where they had walked and in which direction an underground stream would flow. The broken terrain and dense forest conditions leave him less than certain. "I believe we should follow Garrard" Wynn says. "I cannot say for sure, but his guidance is surely better than my own." [Wilderness Lore=14]
Wynn wraps his cloak around himself. The material seems to shed the moisture in small droplets, and the patterns of black and brown make his shape hard to distinguish as he moves through the forest.
Andrath d20+2=6 d20+9=11 d20+13=14 Wednesday May 21st, 2003 11:10:00 PM
Obviously feeling out of place in the forest, Andrath defers to his more woodsy companions. He tries to figure out exactly which way to go, but has no idea. [OOC: Wilderness Lore roll of 6.] "Give me a cobblestoned street, a narrow alley, and high building walls any day. These trees all look the same to me. Point me in the right direction, and I will move ahead and spot our way." However the rain gets in his eyes, and he has trouble seeing anything ahead. [Search 11, Spot 14]
Lorth Thursday May 22nd, 2003 8:07:14 AM
Rain dripping down his shield and onto his back, Lorth moves about a bit uncomfortable. He doesn't even try to pick a direction to go. He looks to Garrard, so obviously at home here and follows along.
Cadmar Thursday May 22nd, 2003 8:41:23 AM
Humming and whistling the ranger shoulders his backpack, puts on the hood of his old green robe, and falls in the line.
Turning to the witch, he asks: "Would you like a cloak? I have one spare." Cadmar takes a small bundle out of the side pocket of his backpack. It appears to be a very nice garment, light and soft, yet warm and pleasant to the touch. [OOC: Its the cloak he got from the Toymaker in the RWI - a very special thing :)]
Cassandra d20+5=17 Thursday May 22nd, 2003 11:23:14 AM
The witch thanks Cadmar very sweetly for the use of his cloak. "This is a fine garment," she says, "and it is owned by a fine gentleman."
She helps scout for the way back. [check = 17]
Elerinn Thursday May 22nd, 2003 2:28:57 PM
Elerinn whistles while the camp is cleared up, and remains optimistic when he notices that the traces are washed away. He agrees with Wynn on following Garrard, for his own sense of direction is really bad.
Kedarn Thursday May 22nd, 2003 3:56:54 PM
Kedarn helps finish up with getting the camp cleaned up. Then takes position in the walk back towards the spring in the middle of the group.
Walk in the woods to the spring (ADM Dominic) Thursday May 22nd, 2003 4:05:57 PM
As the party sets out to the spring clearing Garrard points out the direction that they need to go. The rain continues to lightly drizzle during the walk keeping everyone slightly wet. After walking what you think is half an hour the party spooks a deer that was laying in some bushes causing it to run past the party. A little while later the party arrices back at the clearing with the spring to find a very large man standing at the other side of the clearing. This man has a very large quarterstaff in his right hand. He is dressed in clothes that are colored to where he could blend in with the surrounding brush if he wanted to. You can see that he has a very round and strong chest.
Garrard, -6 to str Thursday May 22nd, 2003 5:40:09 PM
Garrard struggles against his backpack as the group hikes through the forest, silently pushing forward with beads of sweat dotting his face. From time to time he points out landmarks of their passage into the area, but otherwise engages in a wordless struggle with the poison still leeching his strength.
As the group filters into the clearing, Garrard speaks in Sylvan, from his place in the middle of the marching order.
"Greetings. Is the rain not delightful?"
Wynn Brightsong Thursday May 22nd, 2003 9:19:38 PM
Wynn spots the figure on the other side of the clearing about the same time that Garrard utters his greeting. Wynn unconciously reaches to his belt, his hands are concealed by his cloak. The leather sling looped over the belt is still in place and easily reachable.
Wynn matches the druids greeting. "Vedui" (Greetings) Wynn says loudly enough for all to hear. He hopes that Andrath has noticed the stranger and has the presence of mind to stay out of sight until his intentions are known.
Andrath (AC17, 5 hp, -6 Str) d20+9=14 Thursday May 22nd, 2003 10:36:09 PM
Having travelled separately from the rest of the party, Andrath figures he can slip into the undergrowth without being seen. [OOC: Hide roll of 14.] If the large man has already obviously noticed him, he will just stand quietly, and wait to see how the encounter progresses.
Cadmar Friday May 23rd, 2003 4:59:02 AM
Seeing that the people walking in the front of the party have suddenly stopped, the ranger stops too, remaining among the trees. His curiosity wins over, however, and he carefully peeks at the clearing from behind the cover of leaves.
"I wonder who might that be?"
For now Cadmar leaves the conversation to Wynn and Garrard.
Lorth Friday May 23rd, 2003 9:11:34 AM
Lorth walks foward to stand even with Garrard. He stays silent letting Garrard do the talking in this natural place.
Thram d20+6=11 Friday May 23rd, 2003 12:03:57 PM
The monk waves a friendly hello at the stranger.
He also takes a look around the rest of the clearing to see if the man has any friends in hiding.
[spot=11]
Kedarn d20+5=14 d20+5=25 Friday May 23rd, 2003 1:45:32 PM
Kedarn continues to walk up to where the rest of the party stopped and looks around the clearing. (listen 14, spot 25) Once Kedarn has looked around the clearing he will give the man a friendly nod.
Cassandra d20+2=4 (remember check) Friday May 23rd, 2003 2:16:43 PM
The young witch's eyes open wide at the sight of the huge person. "Could that be ..."
She tries to remember if she has met this person before. But her memory is especially bad today.
Grynntym Deeproot (DM Cayzle) Friday May 23rd, 2003 4:28:43 PM
The human is a huge barrel-shaped man whose form suggests a bear. You see that his quarterstaff is a living piece of wood -- small twigs and leaves sprout from it.
"Welcome, travellers," he growls. "I am Grynntym Deeproot. And I think I know who you are."
He beckons, and two satyrs walk into the clearing. "Are these the ones from whom you stole?" he asks them.
They seem reluctant to answer. He grabs each by a pointed goat-ear and yanks. "I SAID, ARE THESE THE ONES?" he shouts.
"um, yes," one faun answers softly. "it's them," the other whispers.
"WELL?" the man adds, shoving them forward.
"um, sorry," the satyrs say in unison. They set down the potions Cassandra gave to them. They look very abashed.
"I apologize," the man says. "And it is only fair that you pass judgement on these rogues, since you were wronged. What should I do with them?"
Cassandra Friday May 23rd, 2003 4:30:15 PM
"Oh! I knew I knew you!" the witch says.
She turns to the party. "This is the person who gave us leave to enter the Culverwood."
Her voice drops to a whisper, "A greenmage of good repute, and powerful, too!"
Wynn Brightsong d20+5=16 Friday May 23rd, 2003 7:47:21 PM
Wynn winces in sympathy with the two satyrs, recalling the same harsh treatment at the hands of his father.
"T'is true these youngsters played a trick or two on our party, but we parted with the potions of our own will. At our invitation they joined us in song and made no use of the powers that the stories tell us they have."
Wynn bows slightly in deference to the greenmage and continues. "We were not harmed. If you see fit to punish them I would speak for leniency on their behalf, for they will surely have already learned a lesson that I myself learned as a youth."
Wynn steps forward to offer his hand in friendship to the mage "Wynn Brightsong is my name and we would be grateful for your continued leave to travel in the Culverwood. [Diplomacy=16].
Cadmar Saturday May 24th, 2003 3:52:52 PM
Hearing the man speak friendly to others, Cadmar leaves the cover of trees and joins the group. When the satyrs are brought forth, he does not know whether to laugh or to pity them.
When Grynntym is introduced by Cassandra, Cadmar's eyes open wide. "A greenMAGE..." he whispers. A look halfway between awe and admiration appears on his face. It is obvious that the ranger has many questions he would like to ask, but realizes that this is not a proper moment to be overly inquisitive.
Garrard Saturday May 24th, 2003 4:08:54 PM
Garrard smiles, and introduces himself in Common. "I am Garrard Talhein, druid of the Windbourne Hills. Thank you for passage, and your watchfulness."
Kedarn Sunday May 25th, 2003 5:50:46 AM
Kedarn takes a comfortable stance while listening to Grynntym Deeproot talk. When Grynntym Deeproot calls the satyrs into the clearing he smiles.
Elerinn Sunday May 25th, 2003 3:17:03 PM
Elerinn, in a good mood because of the bad weather, cheerfully greets the powerfull greenmage and the satyrs as well, with a little smile. And, before he realizes it sounds really stupid, he adds in a high-pitched voice: "You have a really nice forest!"
Andrath Monday May 26th, 2003 12:01:36 AM
Andrath agrees with Wynn, "Well, Sir Greenmage, it seems to me that our witch gave up her potions of her free will, with only the slightest bit of extortion. Seeing as how these satyrs are giving the potions back in exactly the same spirit, I think that we can call it even. While we were in this fine forest, we collected a few salmonberry plants from a cave, and a few others were damaged in the process. The witch planted what seeds she could, but those seeds, and the plants that remain, likely will need some tending. I propose, as repayment for their misguided actions, that your two young satyrs visit the cave from time to time, to tend the old and the new plants. It might just teach them some responsibility. Just be careful when you go there; a few large spiders have taken up residence in the cave."
Grynntym offers Refuge (DM Cayzle) Monday May 26th, 2003 12:42:17 AM
The greenmage hears the party suggest clemency, and smiles. He especially likes Andrath's suggestion that they tend plants.
"Good idea, my friend. And as you have shown friendship to the folk of Culverwood, let us show you friendship as well. Please stay here in this clearing for as long as you like. Let us feast on honey and rice cakes, vegetable stew and fermented grape juice! Relax, and be welcome!"
The satyrs sing and cavort, and a pleasant time is had by all. The greenmage id pleased to talk with anyone interested in the Culverwood or Nature. He draws out the druid, especially, in conversation. You all have a feeling of safety and comfort (although the vegetarian fare is unusual).
Over the next few days, you stay here to relax, to learn, to recover from poison. Cadmar (and anyone else) can ask questions (here or in e-mail). This is a brief time for R&R.
[OOC: The second Cinnamon Valley module ends here. All PCs are now second level. Please e-mail your updated PC sheets to me at cayzle@yahoo.com. Since I am out of town, I hope to post again Tuesday, but I may not get around to e-mail until later. Thanks for your patience!]
Greg OOC d6=6 Monday May 26th, 2003 8:04:13 AM
Andrath's hit points roll for going to 2nd level. Also, exactly how many experience points do each of us get for the adventure? Or will you email that separately?
Elerinn OOC d4=2 Monday May 26th, 2003 1:38:40 PM
Hit points roll for level 2...
Thram Monday May 26th, 2003 3:30:07 PM
Thram relaxes and enjoys the day. Other than asking what a greenmage is and if it is somehow different from a druid, he has no questions and is content to relax.
He's glad to see that the satyrs aren't going to be punished severely. After all, they were just up to minor mischief. They hadn't really hurt anyone.
Cadmar Monday May 26th, 2003 4:29:28 PM
The ranger enjoys an unexpected stop in their journey, especially since it means Cassandra will be around longer.
Sometime after dinner, he casually asks her: "So, is there anything else I - I mean we - could do for you? The witches, I mean?"
If there is opportunity, he will talk to Grynntym, too:
"Excuse me, good sir. Magic has always been my fascination. I have never heard of a green mage before. Would it be impolite to ask you to tell us something about you, the forest, and your Art?"
Kedarn Monday May 26th, 2003 5:31:07 PM
Kedarn relaxes and listens to what the greenmage answers when asked questions.
Elerinn Monday May 26th, 2003 5:47:03 PM
Elerinn absent-mindedly listens to the greenmage's answers, while he carefully listens to the rain's rhythm. It is clear that he is daydreaming, and the gnome looks really content.
Andrath Monday May 26th, 2003 8:34:55 PM
Andrath makes himself as comfortable as possible on the hard ground, and pulls up a root to lean on. As they dine on vegetarian fare, the elf dreams of a juicy steak, a cup of warm mead, and a nice feather bed in which to sleep. However, he does get as much rest as possible, to more quickly recover from the spider poison. Not knowing exactly what to ask a greenmage, he keeps his own counsel, and waits to see what the others have to say.
Wynn Brightsong Monday May 26th, 2003 10:44:26 PM
Wynn props his pack up against the bole of a large tree, and stretches out on the grass, his head on the pack. He spends his time reflecting on the past several weeks. His lids are heavy and he dozes lightly as he half listens to the conversations going on about him.
Garrard Tuesday May 27th, 2003 1:17:36 PM
Garrard talks freely with the greenmage, his questions turning more to the thousand details of the life of the Forest. Over the days resting, Garrard will also take time to go on short walks with his hawk, watching it hunt and just taking in the environment.
Interlude (DM Cayzle) Wednesday May 28th, 2003 9:06:33 AM
The greenmage explains much about who and what he is. [OOC: see write-up in the Black Cathedral.]
All poison damage is healed.
After a few days of rest and recuperation, all are ready to depart. Cassandra advises that the group follow the route back that they followed coming in.
[OOC: sorry this is short. Still onthe road. A better turn and start to module three (plus replies to e-mail) tomorrow. Cayzle]
Thram Wednesday May 28th, 2003 12:47:21 PM
Nods goodbye to the greenmage and sets out on the road.
Thram Wednesday May 28th, 2003 2:26:07 PM
As the group strolls down the path, Thram asks in an atypical burst of verbosity, "So, should we come up with a name for ourselves? I hear that often adventuring groups seem to take on a name. It makes it easier to introduce yourselves, I suppose. How about 'Cassandra and the Sultans' or the 'Spicy Eight'? You know spice like Cinnamon Valley and eight because there are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 of us."
He might be joking, but he doesn't laugh.
Elerinn Wednesday May 28th, 2003 2:53:38 PM
Elerinn, during the few days he spends in the greenmage's territory, gets more and more restless. When the group decides to leave the greenmage again, he bows politely, but not exaggerated, to the greenmage and says: "I thank you for your hospitality. Is there something we can do in return? If not, know that we are in your debt, so if you ever need our help..." Elerinn pauses and smiles mischievous. "But I believe, and hope that we will be on the road quite often, from now on."
Then, he follows the others down the road back. He speaks to the raven on his shoulder, Qamaro, and the small bird flies up, circling around the group of fresh adventurers.
When Thram suggest his names for this group, Elerinn laughs and replies: "Oh no! They are not flashy enough! How about...how about..."
Elerinn thinks for some moments, and finally, trying to look really serious, the red-haired sorcerer exclames a long name, apparently in the draconic language. "Or do you think that would be too much honor?", he concludes with the same mischievous smile.
Garrard Wednesday May 28th, 2003 4:41:23 PM
Garrard politely speaks with the greenmage until the party leaves, and then resumes his usual reserved silence on the road, until Thram mentions choosing a name for the group.
"I have no problem being associated with each of you. If we are to do this, perhaps we should have a private talk about long range goals, choose a purpose for the group, and let the name flow from that discussion?"
Wynn Brightsong Wednesday May 28th, 2003 8:18:35 PM
Wynn shoulders his pack and prepares to follow the group. He bows slightly and thanks the greenmage for his hospitality and protection.
"Curious...I too have been thinking of names."
"Like Garrard, I too am proud to stand with each of you. Our wise friend may also be right in suggesting that a unifying purpose might lead us to an appropriate name."
Wynn pauses for a moment, and then in an uncertain voice reveals his own thoughts to the group...
"My own purpose is neither very grand nor very noble. In part I am in it for the adventure, and in part to learn and share the folk tales of the Wold. If I am lucky enough to become a small part in one of those tales, all the better. My mother would tell you that by sharing our knowledge and traditions we can bring a degree of harmony to an otherwise discordant Wold. In my better moments I would live this idea."
Andrath Wednesday May 28th, 2003 11:07:40 PM
Andrath also readies to leave, and grabs a nearby branch, doing a couple of quick chin-ups. He turns to the forest man and says, "Thank you for your hospitality, sir. Although I am not much for the forest, I appreciate what you have done for us, giving us a place to rest and recover, and helping us to deal with those two satyrs, to a positive conclusion."
As the travelling party's discussion turn to a name and a purpose, the elf rogue adds, "Personally, I do not travel with you all for any greater purpose. I am here for adventure, and comradeship, and maybe a little fame, and riches. If I manage to help right a few wrongs along the way, so much the better. And I think it may be a little early for our party to be trying to decide a name for ourselves. Why don't we wait for a while, and see what comes to pass. It is likely that something waits in our future that will clearly indicate a suitable party name."
He turns to Elerinn, and says, "And Elerinn, referring to ourselves as 'witch-order-obeying, satyr-loving party animals', even if it is in draconic, may not be the best idea." He winks at the gnome, and smiles.
Kedarn Thursday May 29th, 2003 3:31:43 AM
Kedarn thanks the Greenmage for allowing the group to rest and recover here in the Culverwoods. Kedarn then sets out on the road again with the others. When the subject of a group name is brought up Kedarn says "I have a feeling that in due time our actions will give us our name. As for my purpose of going on the road is simple. I am looking to give Gargul's aid to those I find and become friends with. I consider all of you my friends and will aid you to my best ability." With that said Kedarn will look about the area and continue walking in quiet thought.
Travel (DM Cayzle) Thursday May 29th, 2003 9:29:01 AM
Bidding farewell to the greenmage, the party walks north homeward through the Culverwood. The two satyrs lead the way, as directed by the greenmage, so that you will have both guides and protectors.
Night falls, and you are still in the forest. Any special actions to prepare for the night?
[OOC: I hope to get back to everyone about PC sheets TODAY! Sorry for the delay!]
Cadmar Thursday May 29th, 2003 10:10:00 AM
The ranger enjoys the change of pace in the journey.
"My most important personal goal right now is to get together enough coin to pay for a regeneration spell for my dad. He lost a leg during the last war and can barely walk by himself. Can any of you imagine how cruel that fate is to someone who used to run with the wind in the forest?... In these last years I have witnessed my old man wither and grow old. I wish to see him enjoying life once again."
"As for the name, we could choose something to go by for now, until we earn a true nom de guerre. Something like the Green Company or such..."
Thram Thursday May 29th, 2003 10:26:46 AM
Hearing Cadmar, Thram roots around in the saddlebags of the mule and pulls out 200 gold coins. He passes them over, "That sounds like a noble cause. Let me help you as I'm able. I don't need anything so important."
He pauses and looks embarrased for a second, "I'm sure that isn't enough, but it will help you earn the sum faster."
Turning back to the name issue, "Well, we've had the goals discussion before. I'm not interested too much in adventure per se. I just want to help those in need, and so far, despite what some of you say, that's what we've been doing. Still, a name isn't that important in the grand scheme of things. I dont really care what we choose, so long as we pick something."
Garrard Thursday May 29th, 2003 3:02:12 PM
Once the party has camp set up for the night, and dinner is done, Garrard will continue his part of the conversation.
"At my druidic initiation, there was a fairly surprising appearance by several fae, who I believe were either loremasters or nobles. In addition to some... personal comments they made, they told me that I should prepare for a major threat in this region. They were not specific whether it would be to the region, to Nature, or to the fae."
Garrard chuckles dryly.
"Then again, sometimes the fae have a loose grasp of time. It might not even be for years yet. However, that is the core reason I am performing these missions."
"I certainly don't have a problem with anything we have done so far. I simply think we should have a higher expectation of our group action than simple profit."
With that, Garrard passes Cadmar a small beltpouch. When Cadmar looks inside, he finds 40 platinum pieces.
Elerinn Thursday May 29th, 2003 6:12:21 PM
Elerinn, considering the others' reasons to adventure, feels a bit embarrased too speak his mind. Somehow, it feels like his cause is less noble, less important. But after Garrard speaks his wise words, he coughs and says: "I...well, for one part, I want to leave this Wold a better place then I entered it. I know that's a tough goal for a small gnome such as myself, but I could not life if I hadn't the idea that I'm trying, at least."
For a moment, Elerinn's face seems like that of an old man. With less energy than before, he continues: "Another reason for doing this...I...have you ever had the feeling that nothing in this Wold mattered? When Gargul would finally come for you, people would forget you within months? My fath...I want to live! Now, but also after I left this Wold. I want to be remembered!"
Elerinn abruptly stops, and considers what next to say. He tries to think of a way to bring up the group's name issue, but don't know how to do it. The last word he speaks, is a soft command to Qamaro, and the bird lands on the silent gnome's shoulder.
Wynn Brightsong Thursday May 29th, 2003 8:20:54 PM
Wynn listens to the words of his fellow travellers. "What of our Paladin, doth he think we should be named 'Templars of Culverwood', what is his ambition? Lorth? Has anyone seen Lorth?"
Wynn spins around to look for the tall human.
Andrath Thursday May 29th, 2003 11:10:18 PM
Andrath gets ready for the night, ready to take his turn at watch as required. He is careful to sleep on top of his valuables, since he doesn't fully trust the satyrs, if they stick around. [OOC: I presume we keep the same watch order, OK?]
Kedarn Friday May 30th, 2003 1:53:48 AM
Kedarn listens to what the entire group has been talking about while walking and smiles. When the group stops for the night Kedarn tells the others "I agree with you Andrath, we should keep our normal watch routine. Don't forget we are still in the Culverwood and we should make a cold camp with no fire."
