Can we use fire to our advantage here without angering the elves and their city?" Shiraz asks while watching around them, "and what do these twig blights do as they attack?" If so does an arrow do the dame damage. I can be somewhat efficent with my bow as well if you think it is needed." Trace keeps a wary eye out while they move deeper into the wood. Savin will keep himself loose and move over to the undead hunter. "Sir Do you need magic weapons to fight these undead? I only have my hands and feet. I can use them effectively but not sure that they will be great against vampires."
Ilsidur Wednesday June 4th, 2003 11:21:50 PM
Ilsidur readies his axe and shield, trying to keep his eyes open for whatever this strange forest might throw in their way. He trusts the undead hunter, and the druid, to lead the party as safely as possible. "For the day, I have asked the gods to gift me with spells that let me identify and combat undead, heal disease, restore lost levels, and slow poison. Hopefully, they will not be necessary, but I fear that they will be."
Jurgen Sturmjager [Koboldian] and Vus d20+3=10 d20+3=22 Thursday June 5th, 2003 3:22:34 AM
Keeping his mouth shut, Jurgen decides that the last thing he needed was another lecture about being controlled. The belt made him more powerful. The sole advantage of power is that you can do more good. If Jurgen could help people with this magic, then why would it be a bad thing? There was no grey zone. If Jurgen tried to do good, then there was no fault in that. If Jurgen tried to do bad, or let bad things happen without even attempting to stop them... Then that was when he gave in to corruption. When he no longer cared. If he died in the path of righteousness, then that could be accepted.

As he thinks, he slowly dons his Mithral Shirt. One of his most expensive items and it was called a shirt. He would have laughed, if he had not felt it would have been dreadfully out of place. It seemed only slightly bulky underneath his flashy robe. In fact, he felt comfortable. Amazingly enough, the armor felt like it was fit with him in mind. Perhaps that was part of the magic. Or perhaps they had just found a Mithral Shirt in his size. Either way...
Ilsidur's talk of preparing spells places a small smile onto Jurgen's face. To only be able to use certain spells. That would be dreadful. Of course, only a few spells would twist themselves around Jurgen's mind. But he didn't have to hold a spellbook, nor did he have to pick and choose among those he knew. Instead, he could let loose a bolt of lightning over and over, even if hadn't planned on fighting that day... Oh well. He had been born with a gift. There was no training required of him.
Vus... Are you nearby? Hey Vus... Jurgen's mind opened itself up to his hopefully nearby companion. The blink dog could take care of himself, but it would be much easier if Jurgen and Vus worked together. Together, they could assure each other's safety. Vus... If you can hear me, get to me as quickly as possible. We left the city. Uh... Someone outta tell you which way to go, if you can't guess. He chuckles and lets Vus find his way.
With a quick flick of his wrist, Jurgen pulls out his dagger. He spins it around his fingers, getting them ready, not to throw and stab, but to perform the complex spell movements that were innately formed by his blood. He couldn't exactly tell what he was doing sometimes, but he knew it was right.

Caelmus says, "I hearr weee have companyy!!" Everyone else, besides Jurgen, Luke and Peerimus, is aware of a sound or some movement in the bushes. The thorny briar seem to come to life and charge out at you.
They stand about 5-ft tall and appear to have thin prickly bodies that resemble a briar bush except for having two arms and legs. They have little beady eyes that glow red, fangs and sharp menacing claws. They catch Jurgen, Peerimus and Sly's dog Luke by complete surprise.
(Everyone is flat-footed during this first round, no dex bonus to AC, but you get your full round of actions. Jurgen, Peerimus and Luke are completely surprised and get only a partial action and are also flat-footed, no dex to AC for the next round. With only a partial action you can either attack/cast if within range or move, but not both. Not exactly the true surprise rules but its hard to do online.)
Two come charging out at Caelmus. One is close enough to attack with its claw. The Blight connects and claws into his arm. Caelmus grits his teeth as he feels the burn of its poison but he fights it off.
Caelmus very swiftly becomes a whirl wind of blades. Caelmus slices into the blight three times. The blight pays for his attack with his life. Caelmus wastes little time reducing it to a pile of twigs.
A twig blight charges Sir Thomas' horse and tries to claw at its neck. (Hit AC 12)
Jurgen is approached by 3 blights. Only two get close enough to attack. (Hit AC 23 and 22. Damage 8 & 4 points. If they hit you must make a Fort save DC 14 vs. Poison or suffer -2 strength for each hit.)
Savin is attacked by two blights. (Hit AC 21 and 23. 8 & 5 points of damage. If they hit, must make a Fort Save DC 14 vs. Poison or suffer -2 strength for each hit.)
Shiraz takes the lion share of the blights in the battle. Five blights rush at Shiraz, but only two get their with their charge attack. (Hit AC 27 and 23. 9 & 8 points of damage. If they hit, must make a Fort Save DC 14 vs. Poison or suffer -2 strength for each hit.)
All the others find themselves without a combatant. Ilsidur feels the magic of his shield grow within him. He feels he can rage if he wishes. Suddenly the shield's grimacing face on the front of the shield suddenly starts to shout at the twig blights. "Plants... you worthless PILES of sticks ... we'll reducing you to KINDLING for our FIRE when we're done!! You're PATHETIC... WORTHLESS and soon to be DEAD DEAD DEAD!!!!"

(This will be a cliff notes post. Very late working on Wold stuff.) ------------------- Everyone becomes aware of their attackers by now and feel alert for the battle. (no one is flat footed anymore. twig blights AC is 14)
Trace casts his spell and now he is ready to fight.
Sly chops a Twig Blight to bits. It dies. Thomas' horse is free from attack.
Peerimus casts Shilleigh on his club. Wild magic pulses through the wood. Almost as if was alive. The bear misses a blight with his claw.
Shiraz makes little work of a Blight. Reduced to sticks. (Plants are immune to criticals)
Ilsidur chops into the blight next to Jurgen. Ilsidur's rage burns hotter than his axe. He slams into the blight. The blight catches on fire and starts to dance about. In a paniced frenzy it runs off. (Ilsidur and Jurgen are allowed an attack of opportunity.)
Savin launches a sever blow on the blight, however he doesnt take as much damage as he had thought. The blight springs back to attack. (plants are immune to crits.)
Since the Blight on Thomas' mount was slain by Sly, Thomas focuses on one of the blights surrounding Jurgen. With quick perfectly timed attacks, he stamps the blight into the ground. (dead)
Jurgen strikes back with a strike of lightning. Only one is left. (made ref save 21) The blight avoids most of the damage and continues to fight. However, he looks charred.
Sly notices out of the corner of his eye, to the east. It looks to be a young maiden kneeling on the ground in a clearing about 40-ft away. She holds up her arms as if try to hold off an attack from a Twig Blight that looms over her.
Then all heck breaks loose. To the west, right next to the party's trail a dozen or so Twig Blights are dangling and hopping on a tall trees branches. Some seem to be trying to "pull" on the branches. Then some of you notice that a couple of blights at the base of the tree have clawed a huge chunk of the trunk. Suddenly the tree, slowly at first, comes crashing down on all your positions.
(Reflex 14 to avoid the falling tree. If you fail the save you take 3d6 points of damage. Roll 1d6, if your roll is an odd number you avoid getting pinned down under the tree. Instead you merely fall down. It will take a move-equivalent action to get up and you can make a single attack. If you roll a even number, you are pinned under the tree. If you choose, you can attack only once at -4 and you lose your Dex bonus to AC. OR as a full round action, you can attempt to get free from the tree with a Strength or Escape Artist check DC 19.)
After the tree comes crashing down 7 of the 15 twig blight drop to the ground. 4 of those become pinned. Including the last one on Jurgen. Those pinned wiggle and squirm under the tree. Those down get up, but cant attack. The other 8 charge to attack.
Caelmus with stone cold precision slices into the last blight on him with all 4 blows. The blight falls to the ground in pieces. ----------------- One charges Caelmus, swings and misses.
None on Thomas but he can make an attack of opportunity on one next to Jurgen.
No blight approaches Ilsildur. However a blight on Jurgen is within reach. (aoo, attack of opportunity)
Sly and Luke find themselves with no combatant.
Jurgen is attacked by one blight, but misses.
Three charge Peerimus, two can attack. (Hit AC 15 and 13) Both miss. Yorrick gets a opportunity to attack (ooc.)
Both Twig Blights on Savin fail to see the falling tree and are crushed under its branches. The both still live. (lucky)
(Any attacks on prone blights get a +4 bonus.)
Trace is attacked by one blight. (Hit AC 21 for 5 points of damage. Fort save DC 14 vs. poison or take -2 to Strength)
The 4 blights are still on Shiraz. They also fail to see the tree falling and they all fall down and two are pinned under branches. They all still live. Two get up and attack with a claw. (Hit AC 15 and 26 crit threat, 9 no crit. 9 points of damage. Make Fort save DC 14 vs. Poison or take -2 to strength.)

Shiraz nimbly steps out of the way of the falling tree<Nat 20 reflex> and keeps his focus on the blights in front of him. Striking out quickly with both swords the huge taur starts to breath as his swordmasters taught him and hits the blights three times, the heavy steel blade leaving jagged painful gashes in the creatures. Shiraz pivots on his left foot as he turns and cleaves into the next blight and avoids the next blow making sure to put his body between the enemy and his friends. Shiraz steadies himself and launches an attack of opportunity on the same blight he cleaved into leaving another jagged scar. "Serves them right," Shiraz mutters to himself. Shiraz looks down, flexing him forearm encouraging the blood to flow where the blights scratched him, "Marteus spawned poison!"

OOC Not sure if their was a misunderstanding on my last post. I rolled twice for my normal hits per my normal attacks. One was a possible critical before I found out that plants aren't subject to critical hits. I rolled for a critical and missed but should still have struck my little nasty twice for 21 points of damage.
Savin dives forward and rolls to his feet easily avoiding the crashing tree. He turns and strikes at the two pinned creatures. He attacks the uninjured one twice.
OOC Two attack rolled 14 and 15 but didn't add on any modifies for them being pinned under the tree. Damage 11 and 10

The rage continues to course through Ilsidur's body, and he shouts out an incoherent challenge. He takes a parting swing at the burning twig blight as it runs off, connecting with the flaming blade of his axe. [OOC: attack of opportunity, hit AC28 for 16 hp damage, and a further 6 hp fire damage.]
As the tree comes crashing down, Ilsidur is too slow to avoid it, and a large branch strikes him across the head and shoulders, knocking him to the ground and pinning him. [OOC: Missed reflex save with a 6, took 12 hp damage, and rolled an even number.] He struggles to free himself from the huge branch, but is unable to get free this round. [OOC: Missed the STR check to get free this round.]
[OOC: In the last DM post, you state that Ilsidur gets another attack of opportunity; I presume after his action, and part of the next round. If so, here is the attack. If not, please ignore.] As the twig blight moves by to attack Jurgen, Ilsidur swings from his prone, trapped position, hitting the woody creature with his waraxe. Quick to react upon seeing a blight turn its back, Thomas lashes out with a very well placed swipe of his sword.
Despite his quick reaction to the blight's poor maneuvering, it is not Thomas' reaction that saves him and Pryte from the falling tree; it is Pryte's reaction that saves the pair. The horse moves quickly to allow the tree to fall where the two were, rather than where the two currently stand.
(Rolled 18 + 6 = 24 Reflex) [OOC: I only rolled one save since Thomas is riding Pryte-Honos.]
Thomas and Pryte continue to work well as a team to create a quickly dissipating group of opponents. Pryte stamps at twig blights flailing under the weight of the tree while Thomas tries to remove the lucky foes while they pick themselves up from the ground.

Jurgen, shouting a victory cry at the death of the two twig blights, doesn't let their ends mean his ceasing. Instead, he grabs the dagger which he just dropped to the ground moments ago. Letting it fly from his fingers towards the Twig Blight that turned and ran.
[Ranged Attack Roll - Success if AC 25 or less - 3 Damage]
Suddenly a tree, from seeming nowhere, begins to fall towards Jurgen and attempt to crush him. At the last second, the sorcerer's feet let him slide... right into one of the fallen twig blights. He immediately finds himself connected to the ground. Now he was aimed perfectly in the tree's path. A wild flail of his arms into the air proved nothing, other than to cut them up and bruise them. Without much hope of avoiding the blow, Jurgen cringes.
[Reflex Save - Failure with a 12 - 18 damage recieved Oh... come on. What are the odds of that? 1:216... GAH! - Pinned]
The wood connects directly with his body and he feels himself struggling to stay awake. He could feel the blood seeping along him and knew he didn't have a chance of moving the tree. For a few brief second he tried to roll himself away, only to feel the darkness crawl over his eyes and make the Wold disappear before his eyes.

The Children fight the twig blights valiantly. Everyone accept Trace and Jurgen, who are trapped under the tree, were able to finish off a blight. Jurgen is barely awake. (0 hitpoints means disabled, but you're awake. If you take anything more than a partial action, you lose a hitpoint and fall unconscious.) Six blights fall this round.
Peerimus casts his spell, Control Plants. A wave of natural energy flows from Peerimus and rolls over everyone in range. Luckily every last Twig Blight stop their attack. They stand there slightly moaning and weezing. They turn their gaze away from everyone else and focus totally on Peerimus. In sylvan, one blight says, "What have you of us ... what we do?" Peerimus also feels that he has some control over the dying tree that has fallen on his friends. (excellent .. you get a hero point.)
While combat stops back at the fallen tree, Sly and Luke go charging at the twig blight 40 feet away, who is attacking a maiden. When he gets there the blight runs off. The crying maiden instantly gets up and tries to hug Sly. She looks familiar (Make Int check DC12 to remember.)
(The round is over. The remaining Twig Blights stop combat while under Peerimus' control. Party's Initiative)

Shiraz barely lowers his guard and shouts back over his shoulder, "What in the name of Imods hammer is going on here?" After Peerimus informs him of what has happened Shiraz runs over to the tree sheathing his swords in the process. Shiraz then stradles the trunk of the tree wrapping his gargantuan arms arond the base of the fallen tree and lifts.Straining against the weight of the ancient tree Shiraz grunts as his hands slip of of the trunk, making a second go of it Shiraz manages to at least get a respectable lift and hopefully free his comrades.
Peerimus [AC 20 HP50 Endure Fire Shillelagh] and Yorrick [AC17 HP51] Wednesday June 11th, 2003 4:44:56 PM
To the Blights Peerimus replies in Sylvan, "Hold for now" To everyone else in a loud voice, "I will have limited communications and control of them for several minutes. I'm thinking to learn as much about their master as possible, any other ideas?"
Peerimus looks about and seeing Jurgen he blanches slightly. He moves to the tree and whispers to it as Shiraz struggles with it. "Old man of the wood, we are here to free your bretheren, but evil has caused your fall and pinned one of ours. I know you are sorely wounded, but please lend your remaining strength to allow us to release our trapped friend" [OoC, normal plants can bend branches and such at my request] Yorrick knows about moving trees and rolling logs and attempts to help Shiraz.

Jurgen, feeling faint, holds himself up. It wasn't time to move. If he did, he risked really losing it and passing out. Something like that could mean his life... No. Now was the time to wait. And close his eyes. He was so tired. Strange. He had gotten a wonderful sleep with the elves. Now he just felt like laying there and letting himself seep away.
Just as he begins to do so, he feels a hand touching his shoulder. At first he ignores it, but then lets Domi's magic work through him. With his eyes closed it felt as if Domi himself were touching him. As if the gods wanted him to stay awake. Looking up, at Sir Thomas, he smiles.
While the group tries to remove the tree, Jurgen reaches to his side and pulls out a potion bottle. He downs it quickly and lets more healing magic run into his body.

The only words that Peerimus hears the tree say is, "avenge uss..!" After those words are uttered, the tree, with the help of Peerimus' spell and Shiraz, lifts the branches that pin down the fallen Children. However the tree continues to hold down the twig blights. The branches make crackling and stretching sounds with each movement.
Sly holds his sword up to the chest of the young maiden. She is beautiful, she looks familiar!! Luke looks confused with the scent or the lack thereof. The maiden's smile fades into an expression of surprise. She looks down at Sly's blade pointed so close to her bosom. Steping slightly forward the maiden allows the tip of Sly's blade pierce her breast. A slight black ooze drips forth. She gazes up at Sly with a wicked expression. Then suddenly Sly realizes who she is ....it's the same face on the Darkwood mask .... IT'S SAYRA!!!
The maiden smiles even wider ... you see fangs and she says, "You're not as naive as I thought you were... no matterrr!!" With an infernal hiss, her eyes turn feral and cold. Her skin instantly pales to almost pure white and her face distorts into something foul, grotesque and menacing. With ungodly speed, her hand, that have now turned into claws, swipe at Sly's sword.
(Improved Disarm, No AOO, Hit AC 36. Sly needs to make a normal attack roll with a +4 bonus. Your weapon is a larger catagory than hers. If you dont beat her roll, your weapon is flung to the ground.)
She then reaches for Sly with a grappling attack. Her grip is like a steel vice ... her strength is incredible!! (Improved Grab, No AOO, Hit touch AC 43, honest to God, a natural 20!! Instant success. sorry)
As if hasted, the vampire twists Sly's arm in a very painful and uncomfortable position. Then with masterful control and leverage over Sly, she spins him around and pins him up against her from behind. Sly feels his arm about to break from the unnatural direction that his arm has been held in. Then with her final attack she slams him in the kidney to better subdue him. Through the intensely sharp pain, Sly finds it hard to breathe as he feels his lifes energy being drawn away.
(Hit AC 33 for 21 points of damage. Energy Drain with slam attack. Sly suffers two negative levels.)
The vampire continues to hold Sly from behind, using like a shield (she has 3/4 cover from the front). Her fangs elongated come so very close to Sly's jugular. With a loud growl she bellows, "YOU ..(Savin) THROW OVER THE MASK OR YOUR FRIEND DIES ... PUT IT IN THE SACK!!" She kicks over a worn burlap sack that was laying on the ground.
Savin who is there by now, looks on in horror. She ... It... whatever it was, looked like Sayra. Same build and height as the Sayra he knew from his dreams. Now she is nothing but a nightmarish image of what he used to feel so much peace with at night. How can this be ... the vampire remains alive in the daylight!!
The darkwood mask thobs violently and Savin senses intense feels of sheer terror coming from the mask ... the Sayra he knows!
The twig blights look on calmly. They glance at the vampire and back at Peerimus. Once again in sylvan, "what you have of us?"
In the chaos of the situation, Sir Thomas and Trace notice that Caelmus has disappeared!!
(Sorry, this is a powerful vampire. She has magically enhanced claws, strength and has all the feats that help with disarming and grappling. Vampires are serious business. Party's Initiative)

"I have a better idea..." Jurgen's hand goes to his side as quick as his Koboldian hand will take him. It almost immediately finds itself grasping a small feather token. Memories of the Wold's last age fade into his mind. Of times where everything was at stake, not only a small village or a few souls. It was dire need that helped him perform the magnificent tasks he had... Now it would be sheer will that repeated them.
"Catch!" With the small coin in his hand, Jurgen takes a second to pull back and another to whip it at the vampire dryad.

Suddenly out of nowhere, the Undead Hunter appears from behind a tree, bow drawn with a glowing arrow with a dire-looking wooden arrowhead. He can be seen mumbling words of power and the arrow glows even brighter. Then like a strike of lightning the arrow flies straight at the vampire, piercing through the back and into the heart!!

"Ilsidur, now, now let us not direct anger at those who do not deserve it. Besides,' the druid adds with a smile, 'I thought dwarves enjoyed being close to the ground." Peerimus is about to question the Blights, when the danger of the vampire steals his attention and slight mirth. To the Blights he angerly says in Sylvan, though the language is hardly suited for it, "Destroy that vile creature that holds my companion." Pointing to the vampire. Hoping the distance is right, Peerimus then calls to the trees and grass about the vampire to "Entangle her." He moves to a range that will offer him easy striking distance, and to a position that will allow him to offer Savin some protection. Sly struggles against the vampire Sayra but misses with his attack. The pain is intense. Sly finds it hard in inhale. Her grip is so tight it makes your breathing quite laborious. (take 3 points of subdual damage from suffocation)
Jurgen takes the small feather and thinks about throwing it. (Int check DC 4, to take back you decision. I dont know how you used it before but this token is a feather. You cant throw a feather. It has no weight. It has no range increment for a ranged attack. The book doesnt say you can throw it. My interpretation is that you place it on the ground and a tree springs forth. To do this attack, you will have to be closed with the vampire. I'll let you have another action in your next post.)
Even with Vampire Sayra using Sly as cover (3/4 cover, +7AC), Savin the monk tries to hit her with is unarmed strikes. Several blows come very close to hitting Sly. In fact, one does strike Sly. (Sly takes 6 points of damage) However, Savin solidly hits the vampire right between the eyes. It hit so hard that it would drop most "living" combatants but it didnt seem to do any damage at all.
One odd thing that Sir Thomas notices is that she appeared nervious when Savin approached, even though his attacks had no real affect on her. In fact, her eyes do a double take at his backpack contain the mask in question.
Peerimus orders the plants in to entangle the undead maiden. (vampire grappled, she loses Dex to AC. Reflex save 13, failed.) Grass, vines and other vegetation twist and wrap around her legs. Sly is also entangled. (Sly must make a Opposed Grapple check DC 32 to break her hold [that's base attack bonus + strength bonus], or an Escape Artist check 32 to wiggle free. Then you will have to make a Strength check DC 20 to break free from the entangling plants in order to get away at only half speed.)
The twig blights start to move toward the vampire, as Peerimus commanded them to, but they quickly halt. Then they all turn back to Peerimus and say, "we can't attack the key ... the key to the portal ... the hole to the other place!" The vampire sharpy looks back at Peerimus and almost laughs at his attempts to restrain her. She doesnt seem to be the slightest bit concerned about the entangling plants. Her expression turns more serious as she looks back at Savin.
"PUT THE MASK IN THE BAG NOW OR I SWEAR THIS HALF BREED WILL DIE ... YOU ALL WILL DIE," she bellows at the monk!! With her fangs she barely pierces the skin of Sly's neck. A little trickle of blood begins to flow and she licks it off. She smiles with delight. "You dont want me to hurt your friend dont you .. hmmm, he tastes incredible. Ive grown so tired of pure elven blood. This one tastes slightly different, I just love a new sensation. I may just keep him." She kisses his neck, nuzzles against him and smiles wickedly.
She chuckles at Shiraz's statement and continues to kiss on Sly's neck. Her tongue is cold and gives you a nauseating feeling.
The Vampire Sayra continues to talk to Savin. She starts to mutter softly and you begin to here her words in your mind. You barely hear them at first but then the volume seems to grow ...."put the mask in the bag please, you know you want to please me, you love me ... i love you. im sayra, the real sayra. lets put the mask in the bag and we can leave this place and go to our grove. its soo beautiful there."
Savin feels his mind invaded with these thoughts. Thoughts of love and wanting to be in the grove you saw in your dreams ... so peaceful. (Domination supernatural ability, Will save DC 17 or be dominated by her. If you become dominated you must do what she says.) The mask is vibrating violently. You hear a softer voice saying no ...dont!! Its so confusing, they sound like the same voice.
With another magic arrow ready to fire, Caelmus yells out. "We're a full days journey from the Darkwood Groves, dont send your animals off to their deaths. Savin dont listen to her ... shes tempting you ... look away!!!" Another arrow flies at the vampires back. All four arrows slam into her back. The glowing arrow hits her the hardest. (Hit AC: 36, 30, 33, 22. Damage: 25, 10, 10, 16.) The arrow hits and sizzles and burns in her flesh. Smoke rises off her back and she shrills again in pain. She quickly regains her composure. She gives a quick dreadful glance at the Undead Hunter to let him know that he will die sometime this very night.
Trace still lays there on the ground with the wind knocked out of him.

Ilsidur nimbly dances in the 20' remaining to reach Sly and the vampire. [OOC: made the reflex save vs. the entangle spell for this round with a 21.] He calls out, "Peerimus, can you cancel this entangle? Look at that vampire; the way she effortlessly holds Sly pinned. Don't you think that if she wanted to escape those plants, her strength would easily allow her to? The only effect that I can see for this entangle spell is to limit OUR movement."
When he gets to Sly, he reaches out and touches him, saying, "Sly, don't fight me on this. I will get you out of her grasp." Then he casts dimension door, while touching Sly. [OOC: Touch attack of 23 against Sly, if necessary.] He dimensionally shifts both Sly and himself (assuming Sly is in agreement) right beside the Undead Hunter. [OOC: No concentration check made, since Ilsidur is not entangled.] He calls out again, "Savin, get away from her! What do you think that she wants most?"
[OOC: Ceil, the spell description says that after Ilsidur casts the spell, he cannot take another action that turn. But I think that it is still OK for Sly to act, since it was really Ilsidur's action that cast the spell, and Sly was only carried for the ride, and didn't need to carry out an action.]

Peerimus considers the dwarfs words, but with Sly now safe, he saw no reason to free the creature. Currently it was contained nicely, the plants would not assault anyone else. If the creature could leave without issue let it prove it. A more pressing matter were the Blights refusal to attack because teh creature was the key to some other worldly portal, which made a peace with the Blights unlikely as the group was here to destroy that key, but he would try. The others for now would have to contend with the creature.
Turning to the Blights, "You say it is the key to the portal. I would like distance and direction to this portal. Is this portal a large tree? We are here in the wood to help another who also wishes to use the portal and do not wish to fight you. We seek the key and portal. Perhaps you came through the Portal and wish to return as well?"
Yorrick stays close to Luke, protecting his own adopted 'little brother'.

Just before he releases his feather token, Jurgen has a quick flash of insight. It's a feather, you idiot. It'll go about a foot and float to the ground. Instead, Jurgen realizes that this vampire had Sly so easily... Maybe there was a way to protect himself, so that he didn't fall into the same trap Sly had.
Vus... Come close to me, and stay close... Then he begins one of his newly learned spells. He was lucky to have 'learned' it. In every fight Jurgen had been in, it had been against evil creatures. Against fowl beings who would give up their souls for power. And this spell, would help to force them away from him.
Suddenly, before his eyes, the vampire tries to take Savin's mind and body over. The entire group needed Savin to be alright... There weren't many options. But he had planned for this. He did have a way out.

When the Sayra look alike, again tries to convince him to put the mask in the sack he realizes he might indeed have a weapon. Suddenly he feels the intrusion in his mind. He summons his will to resist it and steps back, reaches into his sack and pulls out the deathmask. "You want this don't you. Why? Why is the mask so important to you. Well if you want it you are going to have to come and get it. Get out of my mind! I will never come to you." Savin then lifts the mask to his face and ties it on.

Ilsidur ingeniously touches Sly and they both disappear and reappear next to a surprised Undead Hunter (Ilsidur gets 300exp). The vampire is surprised as well. She growls, hisses and looks wildly around. But she quickly returns her attention back to Savin.
Shiraz comes in behind the cleric. After Ilsidur and Sly disappear the vampire becomes wide open. She is no longer concealed by Sly, she is entangled with vegetation and Shiraz's attack sinks deep into her flesh. (dont assume you miss.) Shiraz's blade does maximum damage. The vampires eyes widen in fury. (Reflex DC 18 to avoid entangling)
Sir Thomas plunges the stake into her chest. Arrows, shot into her back from the Undead Hunter have partially pierce the front of her chest. The stake burns inside her black, cold heart. She winces in pain and grabs at the stake. Amazingly she doesnt turn to dust ... like what they all said would happen!!! (Reflex DC 18, to keep from being entangled)
Trace gets up from the ground and mounts his horse. With sword drawn he prepares to charge.
Sly certainly feels better after being teleported away from the beast. However, like Ilsildur, the stress from dimensional travel doesnt allow you to do any other action this round.
Jurgen runs by and chunks a garlic at the vampire. It hits and bounces off her head. She doesnt notice as she tries to pull the stake from her chest.
Savin puts on the mask. The vampire yanks the stake from her chest and casts it aside. Suddenly her eyes widen and an anxious expression fills her face. Teeth nash, biting herself in shock from the sight of the mask. Black oozing blood drips from mouth. The vampire Sayra roars at the others sight. Stringy blood spits forward. It smells foul. The vampire steps back, away from Sayra. She trips backwards from the entanglement.
The vampire bellows,"YOU STAY AWAY FROM ME, WITCH!! THIS IS NO LONGER YOUR GROVE ... ITS MINE ... MINE!!!"
Sayra looks on in horror ... gazing down onto her former self ... her body!! Sayra looks at the others for direction. She doesnt believe her eyes. "By my mother Mitirri!!" Sayra looks completely shocked. "Haahaahaaaa .... Mittirri is DEAD, YOU FOOL!!! YOUR FRIENDS WILL SOON BE DEAD TOOO!! THE AWAKENING WILL HAPPEN ... THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ... YOU'RE WEAK PATHETIC ..." Two more arrows from Caelmus slam into her. "AUUGHGGHHH," the vampire cries in frustration.
Caelmus yells out, "We have to destroy her quickly ... she CAN get away, get her before she turns to mist!!!" Sayra looks up as if looking across the horizon. Realization hits her. "She is like ME!! She cant be destroyed ... she cant leave the Wold. WE cannot pass on from this place. We are anchored here!!!" The vampire lets out a great hisss!!! The undead creature tries to claw further away.
Sayra steps backwards as well. The sight of herself so contorted and maligned is too disturbing for her to look at. Sayra turns toward the group and pleads, "What would you have me do?! She is nothing but a soulless beast... a hollow log ... no goodness, nothing to appeal to."
For the first time the vampire has fear in her eyes. "STAY BACK WITCH!! YOU'RE ALL.. ALREADY DEAD... DEAD!! AUUGGGHHH!!"
Sayra still looks confused. "What do we do? I cant look at her ... there is nothing behind those eyes. She's so unnatural ... she's an abomination .. no spark of life, and yet with my dead body she corrupts the very thing I hold most dear." Then a bit of awareness hits her. "My tree .... you corrupt it too! Its doing all this ... I can feel it. You strike down all those .. people, with ..my hands!!" Savin can feel her fear slowly turn to anger. Sayra glares down at the vampire.
"NO ... STAY AWAY FROM ME ... I'LL DESTROY THE MASK AND THEN WHAT WOULD YOU BE ... WITCH!!"
Sayra suddenly becomes shaken, "I understand what I must do." Savin feels control of his body come back to him. The vampire screams, "NOOOOO!!!!" The wretch begins to change to mist. She is unable to move this round.(she has moved already this turn.)
Savin feels that Sayra has completely left his body and returned to the mask. Your not certain that she could return again if she want to. The empathic tie you once had is severed. (You still have some memories.) ------------------ Back at the Twig Blights, Peerimus recieves an answer. In sylvan, "Yesss.... big tree. Ilsidur tries to run into the entangled area, to add his blows to the creature, but this time becomes trapped. [OOC: missed reflex save with 13.] "By Bregor's black beard, Peerimus, get rid of this entangling spell! There is no way that it will stop the vampire now that she is in that gas form. And now I can't reach her, to add my damage. So, please, remove this spell!" He struggles to free himself.
Ilsidur listens to what Peerimus says from the twig blights, and to what the good and evil Sayra say to each other. "Peerimus, I think that you have misunderstood some things here. The twig blights are referring to one tree, that is one full day travel from here (one dark and light mean one day and one night of travel). This tree is what keeps both the good and evil Sayra tied to the Wold. I figure what happened was that the tree was taken over by an evil force for some reason, and because the force couldn't kill her (since then her tree would die), it trapped her in the mask. Meanwhile, the tree, now turned to evil, either spawned the evil Sayra, or she was summoned, or somesuch thing. This tree is now some sort of 'portal'. Jurgen knows all about trees and portals. The tree is also tied into this 'awakening', whatever that is. I believe this now-evil tree spawned the twig blights, which is why they call it the mother tree. I don't know why they refer to it as a 'thirsty' tree, unless it also has some vampiric powers. Maybe that is why it spawned its evil essence as a vampire."
"The vampire seems to be protected somehow from the normal methods of killing vampires: sunlight, stake through the heart, incredible damage from Caelmus' arrows. Likely she gets this protection from her relationship to the tree. I figure we will need to find this tree, and destroy it. That will end the binding that is holding Sayra, permanently destroy the evil Sayra vampire, destroy the twig blights, close this portal, and end the 'awakening', whatever that is. What do you think?"
"Peerimus, is there any way that you could get the twig blights to implant directions to this tree into your mind, or have them teach you the directions?"

(Clarification: I said the vampire had no more movement this round. The vampire is still on the ground where she was before, but she is turning into mist.) ----------------------------- Caelmus quickly reaches back into his handy haversack (free action). He pulls out a scroll and begins to read. He looks incredibly frustrated. Nothing has been working. He has wasted to very valuable vampire slaying arrows on her and she shakes them off as if they are nothing. Now the vampire was preparing to escape and their was only one last thing he can try.
Caelmus reads the words of power from the scroll and then instantly his hand begins to glow. He runs towards the gaseous vampire. Sweat dripping profusely from his brow. (Reflex save DC 24 to keep from be entangled. Touch attack, hit AC 30. success)
Suddenly a ring of glowing red the vampire at a 10-ft radius. You all see a dome like bubble pop into existence around the vampire and it quickly turns invisible. The vampire springs up from the ground and tries to float away. When she hits the invisible barrier, she can not pass. The vampire Sayra instantly turns solid again and strikes out at the undead hunter.
(vampire strikes. Hit AC 29, 33, 25. All Hits. Damage: 16, 21, 18 points. Caelmus is immune to energy drain.)
The vampires slam attacks knock Caelmus from the glowing ring and he lands on the ground clear from her reach. Vampire Sayra claws at the invisible barrier and can not break through. She is trapped behind the magic barrier.
"Great ...ohhhh, finally something that works. I cast Magic Circle of Protection from Evil. Except I turned the effect inward to act as prison, instead of a shield. It will last for 30 minutes. We need to think of something quick. Ilsidur is on to something. I think there is only one tree too. Sayra's tree! Im willing it never fully died, just like Sayra," pointing at the mask, "and the other, not so pleasant Sayra," Caelmus then points at the vampire.
"Lets go over what we know: Sayra is a dryad who was slain by some kind of vampire. She was spawned into a vampire as well. Since dryad have a symbiotic relationship with their trees, maybe this changing into a vampire affected the tree in some strange way. Awakening ... Awakening?! Peerimus, is there anything about Awakenings in nature that you druids may know about. Sayra was a devout druid for all her life." (Peerimus, Knowledge nature check DC 12)
Caelmus turns to Savin and asks, "Is there anything you can recall about what she told you. How does that mask work and why do you say she is gone? I still see an aura of great magic surrounding the mask."
Looking back at the vampire, who continues to claw at the walls of the dome, Caelmus walks up close its edge and snears at her with bitter hatred. "What did Sayra mean that this vampire was hollow. I know this abomination is cold and souless. I wonder if that is what she meant? Any thoughts?"

[Cure Moderate Wounds - 12 HP gained]
"The tree... Sayra... Vampires. Stupid vampires. Oh no..." Jurgen looks at the mask that Savin is holding and shakes his head. "The vampire is hollow because it might be Sayra. Two parts of her, split up. A dryad is connected ultimately to her tree," he looks to Peerimus with expecting eyes, "right? Well... Maybe this vampire is connected to her tree AND Sayra. In which case, we're dealing with one being. That have been seperated." He sighs and closes his eyes. "What if... What if they need to go back together? That's why the vampire wants the mask destroyed... Because when you put them back together, it'll... do something. I don't know. Something that'll stop the vampire. And probably Sayra."
He points to a tree, in any direction. It didn't really matter. Any tree would do. "We destroy the tree and we won't destroy the vampire. Or Sayra... Well, maybe Sayra. But the vampire is just bound to the area. Not part of the tree. In which case, we'll need one group to get to the tree as fast as possible. Vus can get there faster than anyone else and I could go with him. But I don't even want to guess what would be in store for the two of us. Another option, we all get into my bag of holding and whoever can take us there the quickest goes all out. I could fly us there. Savin could run. I don't know. I need to think." He holds his hands over his eyes and tries to remember anything that Josephine might have told him. A tidbit, anything about dryads or vampires like this.

It all seemed random and annoying. Gah! What were they supposed to do?

But the main thing is that the mask needs to be placed on the vampires face. She insisted that the mask be put in the bag and not just handed to her. I think she is afraid to touch it. When Sayra said that the vampire hollow I think she means to fill the body with her mind and defeat the vampire within. Once that happens Sayra and the tree need to be destroyed or reunited. Nothing else makes sense to me but I have no way of fighting mist and these blights seem to be hanging around. We have put out the fire but I think it could be a blaze again soon." [OOC: Sorry, I hadn't realized I missed a post.]
Thomas draws his sword once he implants the stake in the vamire's heart. He is shocked that even Domi's magic does not phase the creature. "We might be in trouble friends."
" I am in full agreement with Ilsidur's assessment of the situation as it possibly occured. I also agree with Shiraz that the mask needs to be forced onto the vampire's face or some other action needs to occur to allow our Sayra to fight the embodied creature. I don't think the vampire will follow us to the tree if that's where she is most vulnerable, but we definately need to get to that tree. I think the mask should be placed on her face here. That should eliminate one enemy and leave us to face the tree next.
"Another possibility depends on the link that the portal creates. Where does the portal go? We might be able to bring Sayra to life like the stag we saw. If she is free to exist in that form in this wold, then she might be able to fight the vampire. One possibility is to send the mask through the portal or send the vampire through the portal. Caelmus, is there a way for us to transport the vampire in her cage or to create more cages as we take her?
"As far as speed, Pryte has hoove of speed that got us to Tumult's lair in lightning speed. He and I could make a mad dash for the tree with Jurgen if the cage will not last and we can transport the vampire and the mask.
"As far as what direction I think we should take, I think our best option is to get that mask on the vampire's face right now."
With the vampire not being a real issue at the moment, and the blights being hungry for blood, Thomas mounts Pryte and the two turn to face the blights.
[OOC: I rolled three skills checks, but I don't know what could possibly be useful. I'll use the last one as a readied action in case the blights make a move for Thomas or any of his friends and he is within range to attack one.]
(DM Stephen - What skills were you useing?)
Vampire (DM Stephen) Tuesday June 17th, 2003 5:00:59 PM "NO noo NO ... KEEP THAT THING AWAY FROM ME!!! NO NOOO!!!" Her eyes are wide with panic. She starts slamming the walls of the magic circle. Sparks fly with every strike. When someone mentions putting the mask on her, a true expression of fear and despiration fills the vampires face.
Ilsidur (AC24, hp 66/78, effective STR 16, DX 10, can't run or charge) Tuesday June 17th, 2003 10:56:33 PM
Ilsidur says, "So, it appears that we need to 'beard the lion', right? Do we need to put the mask on the vampire, or merely touch her with it? Who has the best chance of stepping into that circle, and grappling the vampire, forcing the mask onto her? I have two spells, one that has a 50/50 chance of defeating the first energy drain attack from her, and the second that will restore any temporary lost levels, so that you can immediately recover from her attack. Or, do we all pile in, aiding the most strongest of us, so that you can beat her in a grapple check, and get the mask on her face?"
"I remember something that she said earlier: that the vampire was corrupting her tree, and that the tree is 'doing all this', whatever all 'this' is. Then the good Sayra said 'I understand what I must do', just before she disappeared into the mask. Savin, did you get any indication what she meant when she said what she must do?"
"Maybe, since the original Sayra was turned into vampire, the good part of her spirit that remained in the tree somehow was placed into the mask. Now, her tree is only tied to the evil part of her spirit, that is now the vampire. Peerimus, could the awakening be talking about the tree? What if the intent is to 'awaken' the now-evil vampire-tree? But I still don't understand the reference to a 'portal'. A portal to where? Where is the portal? The twig blights refer to a portal in reference to the tree, as if the tree were itself the portal. Peerimus, do you think you could get any more hints from the blights, about what is going to be awakened, and why they refer to the tree as a portal tree?"
"Finally, Caelmus, do you need any healing from me?"
Savin Tuesday June 17th, 2003 11:05:01 PM
Savin will walk over to Shiraz and take off his belt of giant strength and hand it to him. "Here take this. I believe that you have the best chance of grappelling with the vampire if you are willing. If you can hold her just for a second, I will place the mask on her. If this doesn't work, we can always try to cut down the tree but for some reason I think this is the way to go. Are you willing? My belt will help you grow even stronger. (+4 to strength.) If we fail though, then at least the vampire will still be contained and we can try something different."
Sir Thomas Wednesday June 18th, 2003 12:45:05 AM

The third is a readied attack. What do you think?]
"I'll go in and fight her. She is more afraid than we are. Does anyone think our tattoos will help us again?"
During the debate, Thomas takes a moment to enter into prayer with Domi and to focus on his tattoo. "Domi, aid the sisters in helping us determine the best course of action. Be our compass. Please help us spread your name and your purpose." It had helped him and the group in the past, but was now strangely silent ... even in the presence of such powerful evil and great indecision. Thomas tries to create a moment of insight as in previous times when the tattoo had been invoked ... whether purposefully or accidentally ...
Thomas is seeking help from their destiny and their greatest power.

The group needs you in other ways at the moment." Shiraz takes a moment in silent contemplation and then places his swords in their correct spots, "I fight better knowing that they are there."
Caelmus (DM Stephen) Wednesday June 18th, 2003 9:55:54 AM
"Why wouldnt we just spear her to the ground, and with everyone taking a limb, that beast wouldnt have a chance of fighting off our combined might. Our weapons dont seem to bother her too much anyway. Whatever we do we dont have that much time. And we need to travel a bit further before night fall."

After they respond he will continue, "You mentioned 'Awakening'. Has the Mother been awakened, or is that creature," here he points to the vampire, "trying to do so?" Peerimus will wait for a repsonce if there is one in coming and then ask, "You call it a portal, explain further. Tell me more."
Peerimus has the Blights for another 5 minutes and will continue to press these three questions.

They all start chuckling and repeating the words blood and mumbling, "awake black giant," with what is best described as wicked giddiness!!
Another twig blight continues to babble, "black giant not awake yet. mother want mask destroyed, can we destroy it now so we can get blood? you have blood, can we have some? we like blood ... fresh blood. hmmm bear have lots of blood. can we have bear? the big one with two big sharp branches coming out of his head has lots of warm blood. the key had tasted the short one already ... we cant have him......"

Once she is grappled and pinned, then Savin can put the mask on her." [OOC: Ilsidur plans to 'aid another', which means that he needs to hit AC10, which he did with a 15. If he is threatening the vampire at the same time that Shiraz is threatening, then Shiraz gets to add a +2 circumstance bonus to his grapple attack.] He casts negative energy protection on Shiraz, and waits for the minotaur to lead the attack. [OOC: the spell means that there is a chance that the vampire's energy drain may not work.]
Savin Wednesday June 18th, 2003 10:06:26 PM
Savin raises the mask in both hands and says, "OK lets rush her then, spear her, throw her down whatever, but lets go. I'm not sure if this is gonna kill Sayra or free her spirit but I want to get it over with."
When the others pin the vampire he will first try to just touch her to get a reaction. If nothing happens then he will try to cover her face with the mask.

While the group holds the vampire, Jurgen takes a safer approach. Instead of standing where the evil creature could get him, he is a good five feet back. It was unlikely she would go for him anyway. If almost a dozen people were trying to hurt him, he'd forget about the one just standing here. And that would be the reason he would be useful.
"A little trick, to blow you away. For good..." Last time he'd grabbed a feather token, he'd almost done a very stupid thing. Now he had an idea. If it turned out the mask made her stronger... She'd be dead, again, in a good matter of seconds. His feather token may not be able to fly, but he could jam it into her mouth. Yes... That would be exciting. Very much so.

Sly looks though the book and it is nothing but history of the elven people, elven folk lore, and information on the various towns and villages of Dremoria. (it adds ranks to the skill, Knowledge (Local: Dremoria))
Everyone gathers around the excited vampire. She looks like a crazied caged animal. She scurries low to the ground. Hissing and growling wildly at each of you. As the mask gets closer the more choked with fright she becomes. She shrills and shrieks. The sound is piercing to all your ear drums.
Caelmus has a idea that could help in the grappling attempt. He casts a spell on the large minotaur. (Caelmus casts Invisiblity to Undead, Will save DC 15. Vampire Will save DC 11. fail) Before the vampires eyes, to her horror, the large minotaur goes invisible. However everyone else can see the minotaur just fine. She panics even more!!
Suddenly, Shiraz attacks and the others rush in to assist. Jurgen stands by with a feather token. Savin holds the mask.
Paniced and enraged, as soon as she feels Shiraz's touch she lashes out. (Full concealment, 50% chance to hit. She rolls a 60. Failed. If she was successful the grapple would have failed instantly.) Her attack of opportunity fails and the grapple is hits successfully.
(Shiraz's grapple check is: +7[base attack bonus], +6[Strength modifier], +4[size modifier], +8[circumstance bonus from multiple grapplers], +17[d20] = 42. Vampires grapple check is: +8[base attack bonus], +10[strength modifier], +19[d20] = 37. Shiraz and company WIN!!!) (Wade, I took the 17 from your strength check you rolled. As you can see, a grapple check is more than just strength.)
Shiraz and the others wrap her up in a near impossible hold to break. She squirms and yanks at you all, still screaming to high heaven. She is incredibly strong!!! You all feel the force of her power straining against yours. You all know now what it was like for Sly when he was held. It takes 5 of you to hold her down as Savin approaches with the mask. By this time you all think your ears are about to start bleeding if she screamed any louder. Then SNAP!!!! the mask slaps down on the vampires face with a force that surprises Savin. Almost like a magnet against steel!! A pulse of energy ripples outward like a wave. (Each of you need to make a Strength check DC 20 to maintain your hold.) Those who arent thrown back notice her body convulsing and jerking about from the battle that now rages on within the vampire. Those who still have a hold dont feel her fighting against you anymore. Now you only struggle to maintain your hold as the body shakes uncontrolably.
The mask almost seems to merge with the face. Nothing like any of the times when Savin doned the mask. After what seems to be minutes, but was only about 30 seconds, the body of the vampire begins to calm and it falls limp to the ground ... unmoving!

Whatever you're going to do to assure Sayra is not eveil or a vampire or whatever. Please do it quickly, as it is my control will only last another few minutes."
Sayra or no Sayra, thats the question. (DM Stephen) Monday June 23rd, 2003 12:14:26 AM
The "creatures" eyes open and she looks around. She says, "Savin, would you prefer the company of the vampire over me. I suggest the mask stays where its at." She stares up at Shiraz after realizing she is held in his mighty grip. "Shiraz, you can let me go now. I am not a harm to any of you anymore."
The mask looks fused onto the head. The eyelids work, the mouth moves with her words more fluidly than before. It almost look alive.
"I can assure you all, I am Sayra, the one from the mask. The soul of this wretched beast, which was once my mortal body in life."
Ilsidur, with his spell, still detects that Sayra is undead, but its a confusing aura. While negative energy is present, there is also another kind mixed with it.
Sir Thomas' detection of evil is also confusing. There is evil present but it seems supressed, lying dormant under the surface.
Sayra turns to Jurgen. "It was a good thing you never dropped that feather token. Thats the one that creates a tree right? Dear Jurgen, this vampire was once me, a dryad. We dryad can travel through trees over great distances. If you had dropped the feather token on her she would have simply merged with it and transported away from here. You almost let her go!!"
She continues to plead her case. "I can assure you all that I am Sayra from the mask. When you placed me on the vampire, I took control of her. Now I understand completely what evil we face and what they hoped to accomplish. By the gods, they wished to awaken it ... the great tree of Burnt Eldor!!!!"

This being the case, I believe this is Sayra, but for safety's sake, Sayra, can you please verify with Savin something that maybe the two of you shared that the vampire would not know? Maybe your discussion at the dinner table, or a memory from your undead experiences. Just a thought. Personally, I think we gain nothing by keeping her trapped here. We can't possibly travel faster than she can 'teleport' through the trees, so we may as well trust her or try harder to kill her ... but I say trust her.
"On another note. Sayra, another way you might win our trust is to stop being vague. What is the great tree of Burnt Eldor? Where is it? What does this mean? How were 'they' going to awaken it? Who exactly are 'they'? How do we prevent 'them' from succeeding? What evil do we face? What's the fastest and easiest way to kill or destroy it? Can you help us by slowing or curing poison? Can you call of the twig blights or are we in for a fight? What's my middle name? [OOC: ok, so that last one was a joke.]"

Ilsidur waits to hear how the dryad responds to Sir Thomas' interrogation. Sayra seems shocked that you all forget so quickly. "My dear adventurers, you slept in the great Burnt Eldor tree just two nights ago! Don't you remember the village of Burnt Eldor. The elves and the feast we had? Dont you remember my beloved Methos?" She has a very perplexed expression on her face.
"Is the evil affecting your minds? Oh my we are in worse trouble than I thought!" Her eyes wander about trying to search for an explanation for the group. "Our mission is quite clear, we must destroy my tree, in my grove .... and I with it! You must destroy me and my tree together. I am the key ... a key can open a door ... a key can lock one too!!"
"The evil is trying to spread across the lands of Dremoria to increase its own power and influence. If they can break through the wards surrounding Burnt Eldor and perform the Awakening, that Peerimus spoke of, then they gain a new unstopable weapon in their army. Yesss ... the neutrality of nature is effected by those who occupy it. If goodness is allowed to flurrish then so does the forest and the wildlife within. If evil corrupts nature the worst of nature manifests itself and strangles life .... choking out life like an entangling vine. That's it ... that's it!! I understand, its possible for plants to be undead too. My tree, in my grove, is .... undead like me! It is awakened by evil ... I can feel it!!"
She throws her hands out and points forcefully at the Twig Blights. "Those curses of nature are the fruit of my tree. Cant you see ... they are infused with the souls of the dead. I can see them. My tree .... brings them here from the Shadow realm and grows them in its branches. They do my trees bidding. My tree feeds on ....BLOOD!! Its roots tap into the Woldsblood ... oh my goddess, I beginning to understand everything now. The vampires thoughts are mine to remember ... ohhh the horror!!!"
Sayra screams in horror and shock as she begins to remember all the victims cleaved by her own dead hands. Tears stream down her face. You all can only imagine what horrors she's unable to close her minds eye to. It is apparent that the vampire sayra has had a busy career.
Caelmus also walks over to Sly. Yes, you have been touched by the vampire energy draining attacks. If you dont allow your cleric to perform the rites, the life you lost will be permanent.
The twig blights begin to appear frightened at what has happened to the vampire.

"Yes! She bit me on the neck (Showing the bite mark to Ilsidur and Caelmus), then she lick my blood. I'm honored that you will perform the right of Lifeforce." Sly Kneel in frount of Ilsidur, "She was so quick and so strong, that I did not have the chance to cleave her head off, and my sword had a spell in it just for her." Sly still hugs Luke, but is eye to eye with Ilsidur.
But on second though, with out moving an inch tell Sir Thomas the answer to his question, "Sir Thomas, you middle name is Eluwishis, Sir."(it's a joke Clay)
Peerimus and Yorrick Tuesday June 24th, 2003 8:51:02 AM
Peerimus looks on at teh unfolding drama before him and the effects of that drama upon the dryad. His eyes mist over and he takes a knee at her head stroking her hair softly. Peerimus speaks softly to her, "It will be alright. I apologize for my companions. OF course they remember the village, but I'm sure they simply did not realize that the village of Burnt Eldor and the Tree of Burnt Eldor are one in the same."
Looking at Sir Thomas and Shiraz with eyes full of sadness and pity, "Let go of her please." and then looking up to Ilsidur, "We must destroy the Blights. Then we will go."
Shiraz AC 23 Hps 65/66 Tuesday June 24th, 2003 9:06:12 AM
Shiraz quickly bounds up and away from the prone Sayra and offers her his hand to help her up from the ground, "A thousand pardons my lady for trampling your body so rudely. Since we must dispatch these blights before we move on can you help us? And if not you might want to turn your back. Shiraz walks towards the first blight and draws his swords stopping five foot from teh creature, "Ok we start with this one," Shiraz says bluntly preparing to chop this tree down.

In response to Sayra's answer Thomas responds with a very dumbstruck, "oh." He then releases his grip from Sayra and lets Shiraz help her from the ground. "I too am sorry ... on many levels." He bows to her.
He then turns to face the blights and draws his sword. Thomas speaks as he approaches a different blight than Shiraz. On his way over he speaks, "I think we should make this quick then. Sayra, how do you propose we kill the great tree of Burnt Eldor? I have an axe, but that was a big tree. Besides, I don't think the elves are just going to let us chop it down ... even if that will work. Direct us and we will do as we are told."
Thomas stops just short of the blight he approaches and prepares himself for battle.

Ilsidur (AC24, hp 66/78, effective STR 16, DX 10, can't run or charge) Tuesday June 24th, 2003 11:29:43 PM
Ilsidur moves over to Sly, and casts restoration on the half-elf. [OOC: Restores all negative levels due to the vampire's drain, and also restores any temporary ability point loss.] He says, "I don't understand. Is awakening always an evil act? I didn't realize that it was. Is the act of awakening any tree evil? Why would it be so terrible for the Burnt Eldor tree to be awakened? Would the awakened tree automatically be evil? That is why I didn't immediately understand your reference to the awakening being such an evil act."
"Peerimus, certainly there is an easier way to defeat these creatures without us having to chop them into kindling. I believe that they may be undead. [OOC: Stephen, did Ilsidur's detect undead show the twig blights to be undead?] If so, can you get them to group together, so that I can try to destroy them using the power of the Gods of the Wold? [OOC: Use a turning check, if Stephen posts that they did detect as undead.]
Savin Tuesday June 24th, 2003 11:39:09 PM
Savin steps up to Sayra and asks, "Dearest Sayra, I am confused. Are you saying that we have to destroy your tree. Is your tree the burnt eldar in the village or another? I thought your grove was still further on. How do you suggest we destroy your tree? I am sure it is huge. We aren't equipped with axes and I am sure it will have protectors. Is their a quick way to take it down?"
Info to know (DM Stephen) d100=51 d6=6 d100=59 d6=5 d100=23 d6=5 Wednesday June 25th, 2003 1:35:10 AM
Sayra calmly closes her eyes and takes her first breath of air in over a hundred years. She puts a strangle hold on the horrific images from memories of the vampires existence. She is calm now and she realizes there is much still to explain.
"My dear friends, we dont want to destroy the great tree of Burnt Eldor. That is not our goal. By defeating this evil, we allow: myself to die and pass on to the Lands of Rest, to spare the lives of the elves who live all around Dremoria (Including the kind elves of Burnt Eldor), and close this portal to the Shadow Realm that is transmuting souls of the dead into living unnatural blighting plants. The evil corrupts nature, bringing out the worst nature has to offer: death, disease, poison, choking vines, briars, and the like."
"My tree is the tree from the darkwood groves of Deep Londo." She points in the direction down the trail. "It is the portal, it is the source of this evil. It was corrupted when I was slain by a vampire. My tree mutated into a horrid undead plant with the dreadful ability to soak up souls from the Shadow realm. These souls are infused into seed pods that drop from the tree and grow into these Twig Blights." Pointing in the opposite direction, "Burnt Eldor is in the other direction. It is where we just came from. We feasted and spent the night there. We do not wish to harm that tree, as if we could harm such a collosal tree!"
"The druids possess the ability to Awaken trees and animals. The druidic rite of Awakening isnt an evil act, but the one doing the Awakening gives a bit of his essence to the tree or animal in the ritual. My tree was awakened by evil in a different way. Remembering back to the moment of my death, I was running to my tree ... to merge with it, to escape the vampire. He caught me just before I could get to it. His arms were wrapped around me. I couldnt merge, and as he pressed me up against my tree he sucked my life away. Thats when it happened. Over time my body, the sarya vampire, and my tree have gorged on the life in the forest. They made gluttens of themselves. The local forest was no longer good enough. They thirsted for more blood, and the more blood they consumed the more powerful they became. My tree learned to spawn Twig Blights and control the dead plants that quickly accumulated around them. The elves stepped in their way. Now my tree wishes to take over it all. If they ever get to the Great Burnt Eldor tree and successfully awaken it, it too will become evil. The great Burnt Eldor will be the tool of the evil and become its pawn. Can you all imagine that collosal tree walking around the forests laying waste of all the elven villages. That tree is taller than any Cloud giant, can you imagine its power ... can you imagine the destruction that tree could cause if made into the puppet of this evil!"
"Like a parasite, my tree will feed and feed and feed, sucking the life and moving to next forest and the next. If its not stopped now, it will grow too powerful for anyone to ever stop."
Turning to Savin, "Like i said before, the way we can purge this evil is to destroy us, my tree and I, together. I think? Pierce both our hearts at the same time. That, I think, is the way we turn the key on this lock. Getting close to my tree will be the hard part. I believe he has turned the forest against us. And the closer we get to the center, the greater his control over the plants around him. I hope he hasnt gotten too strong for us!!"
With Ilsidur's Restoration spell, Sly feel his lifes energy surging back into him. (Ceil, you get your two negative levels back :)
Ilsidur can also feel his own fatigue fade. The combat has been over for several minutes. You do not detect that the Twig Blights are undead. However their long fangs certainly look vampiric in nature. Not to mention their thrist for blood. (You get the Rage ability only once day, like a 1st level Barbarian.)
After Sir Thomas attacks the Twig Blights, they all run off into the woods. The one Thomas hit limps away at half speed. Shiraz can get an attack of opportunity.

Luke is happy the he has his old master back, "Woof!"
Peerimus and Yorrick Wednesday June 25th, 2003 12:51:13 PM
Peerimus watches as the Blights run off, it was expected and there was not much to be done about it, they needed to press on towards Deep Londo which was still a considerable distance. "To answer your questions Ilsidur and Savin, I believe Jurgen will be our greatest asset. We will use fire. The forest is overgrown and choked with evil. Like a lightning strike we will carve a path to Deep Londo and leave naught but a cleansing in our wake. I also have some spells that can ease our passing through some areas. Trees do indeed have hearts though I must admit I would not know how to 'pierce' one. Though perhaps a magical bolt of lightning could do this."
"The Blights are surely going to complain to Sayra's tree about us and in particularly me. The rest of today and tonight is not going to be a walk in the woods."
With that Peerimus casts 'Greater Magic Fang' on Yorrick's Claws.
Ilsidur (AC24, hp 66/78) Thursday June 26th, 2003 12:13:43 AM
Ilsidur takes a look at the marks on Sly's neck, and says, "Sly, I am afraid that you will carry these marks for a long time. You can let them remind you not to let strange women kiss you."
He throws his pack over his shoulder, and readies himself for some more walking. "Peerimus, I don't know if using fire and lightning here is such a good idea. I would be afraid that the fire would get away, and perhaps burn much more than we planned. However, fire may be just what we need to use to destroy the evil tree. I am fairly certain that it had an added effect on the twig blights, when I hit them with my flaming axe."
Sir Thomas hp 66 ac 18; Pryte-Honos hp 41 AC 14 Thursday June 26th, 2003 12:37:10 AM
"Ah, I hope they don't turn out to be a thorn in our side later." Thomas lets the blights run, even the injured one.
He then absorbs all that is said. "I think the best question has already been posed. How do we pierce the heart of a tree? I have no knowledge of this. As for the rest, I am prepared. Let's move swiftly, but with calculating precision. Sayra, guide us to the tree with the route that you think will be the least expected. Even if it is the most heavily guarded there should be fewer traps and pitfalls. And ..." Thomas pauses in contemplation of whether he will ask the last question, and then decides he must. "Are you prepared to have us kill your body? If not, you have very little time to prepare yourself. Please be ready when the time comes. Is a special weapon required to kill this body that used to be a vampire?"
Sayra (DM Stephen) d100=41 d6=3 Thursday June 26th, 2003 7:51:53 AM
"Dear Sir Thomas ... I am already dead, I am ready to pass on. Ive been waiting for my eternal rest for a very long time." She dusts herself off and shows the way.
Shiraz killed the injured twig blight.
(The vampire never bit Sly, she merely scratched him to draw a little blood. If it was a bite, the effect would have been a bit more severe.)
(Sorry, I slept right through my post time. I will post as soon as possible.)
Savin Thursday June 26th, 2003 10:22:24 PM
"I think we should try to hurry. Evil will only get more of a chance to prepare against us. Remember the vampire was only the servant of a greater evil."
Savin keeps pacing along and thinking. He continues, "Maybe we could prepare some mundane fire implements. Oil bombs, torches and some spells to protect us in case we get to much fire."
Over the river and through the woods (DM Stephen) Friday June 27th, 2003 10:44:07 AM
After several hours of treking through the forests, following Sayra, traveling becomes very laborous. Thorny briars and vines catch your clothing as the brush becomes thicker and harder to travel through.
If you're on horseback, you find it necessary to dismount and hack away at the overgrowth. Sayra and Peerimus are not hindered by the prickly vegetation but they slow in order for the rest of the group to keep up.
Besides the hacking sounds of swords against the briar and brush, and the normal sounds of your party, there is no other. Vermin fly and buzz all about. Nats, wasps, flies and etc are a constant irritation. It is becoming late. The sun is going down. Its time you all better start looking for a safe place to camp if you wish. (Make all the appropriate checks)
You all feel the fatigue of this days travel. The recharging of energy and spells will be most needed.

He thanks the good gods that he has his boots, and can keep up with the swiftest of the party, once he manages to cut a swath through the thick vegetation. You all find a small clearing in the briar. Its on a raised spot of land too. Your still surrounded by thorny brush and trees howvever it looks to give you all decent cover from your surroundings. All the vermin flying about is still a nuisance.
A small green glowing bird catches Peerimus' attention. It sits there on a branch high in a tree. It glows like the stag you all saw several days ago. It watches you for a little while and it flies off. After about 10 feet from the branch it fades away into nothing.
Caelmus doesnt help too much in preparing camp or cooking. BTW, Savin is making some that smell good. Caelmus, however, is chanting in a low voice. He has a bag of powder and with it he is drawing a circle around the camp.

While all are gathered for dinner Peerimus brings up the green bird. "It was like the stag in everyway, but form, so almost surely it was the same wood spirit. It has shown itself twice now, and each time was after a spell altered the forest. The first was Sayra's Spike growth like spell and now my Diminsh Plants. At least it did not dismiss mine, but merely took note. This may mean I will be able to continue in such a way as long as the spell does not assault or cause harm to any natural orders of the forest. I could control the blights and plants to attack them, but possibly not to attack wolves or other like dwellers of the forest." Peerimus falls silent and awaits the thoughts of the others.

He hands it over to Shiraz and says, "See, You don't even have to do dishes this way. It the bowl and all." To the others, "I will serve Shiraz because he is so much bigger than me but you others are on your own." Savin will then fill the other half of the bread for himself.
