Malafret : NPC : DM Anthony
Monday June 16th, 2003 8:14:26 PM

Malafret walks into your private session and smiles at you all.

"You have done well and now it is time you understood what we protect and why we do so."

With that she pulls a wooden sphere out of her robes and holds it out.

"This is your coumpus, it has been used for ages, in fact it is the very one I used when I was given this lesson. I give it to you all now for luck."

She smiles again sweetly and then looks about as if tring to find someone not there. Then she begins, her tone changes into her teacher tone and the task is set out.

"You are to go out through the water and gear up, follow the fungus for 98 paces and then turn left and climb, you will come out onto the plains. Should you wish to take Milos boat i will have it there waiting for you, should you choose to treck on foot that is fine too. Once out hold the compus out and turn all the way around. It will grow cold when you are headed in the proper direction. Travel that direction until you come across something . . . odd. An event, something happening. Once ther you are to witness that event and protect it with your lives. These events MUST take place and you MUST witness them. You will understand. You will then rest and set out for the next one on the next morning. Go now and quickly you must make the first one or the rest will be meaningless. Take heed however and pack much water, you will be gone a number of days and you will be alone on the plains."

With that she stands, sets the wooden orb down and leaves calling back over her shoulder.

"If you wish to have Milos boat there leave a note here and I will see to it."

Then she is gone

Milo
Monday June 16th, 2003 10:24:00 PM

standing up when Malafret arrives, Milo bows to her.

listening to her words greatly. Milo listens like a pupil should, and when she leaves he stands up and retrieves the wooden compass. looking it over and rubbing it with both hands he looks up at the group saying: so, we taking my boat or we hoofing it? it's only 8'x12', nothing like the big ships we see running out there.

Flea
Monday June 16th, 2003 10:32:02 PM

Flea stares at the round wooden ball Malafret so recently set on the ground. "A compass. Shady!" she says in a low voice, without touching the device.

Looking up at Trellus, she continues, "Do you think it's magic? Maybe Gilan or Sterlin should carry it?" then she adds "or Anuk?"

As she shoulders her pack, she turns to Milo and asks, "You've got a boat? Like the traders?"

(OOC: Subtracted 65 gp, and a Catacombs voucher equivalent to 45 gp from Flea's money for her contribution to Trellus' shopping for the pack. Flea has 5 gp left.)

Grymash
Monday June 16th, 2003 11:47:17 PM

Grymash checks everything for travel. His new armor is so light, he can easily swim in it. He fills up all four of his waterskins. And he make sure that he prepares several Create Water spells.

Grymash also packs a little food. If they ever are in need of food, the Plains will always provide. Though some of his pack seem to be squeamish when it comes to local fare!!

"Gry think pack should walk if pack can get there on foot. We save boat for big trips. Gry not want boat smashed up on short trip when feet can do job just as good."

However Grymash doesnt want everyone to know that riding on boats, floating on top of the grass, makes him nervious. He preferrs his feet firmly planted on the ground.

Sterlin
Tuesday June 17th, 2003 8:30:10 AM

Sterlin gives his spiders some attention then speaks to the group.
" I don't think we have room for everyone in the boat. Also it may attract attention we don't want. It could also be used for one or two of us to scout from though if we choose. I personally however, prefer walking in the plains. "

Milo
Tuesday June 17th, 2003 11:45:37 AM

my skiff aint 8x12 its 8x4 big enough for 1 person and supplies. (my bad)

anyways, I think it would be a good idea to put extra water jugs on the boat, food and other supplies and to be used for scouting.

Trellus
Tuesday June 17th, 2003 3:02:29 PM

"I'm with Milo. We can pack the boat with extra supplies, use it for scouting, or just tow it along with someone in as a lookout."

"Well, she said 'Go now'. So lets grab our gear and meet down below."

Trellus fills up two waterskins, and leaves for the meeting spot.

Once there, he casts a BULLS STRENGTH spell into the Ioun Stone for Anuk.

Then he loads up, and waits for the others.
Which gives him plenty of time to worry about Malafret's next test.

Anuk
Tuesday June 17th, 2003 6:40:36 PM

Anuk listens carefully to Malafret as she speaks. Knowing that their time is limited, he thinks about how to prepare. He's intrigued by the wooden compass, and spends some time studying it. After looking it over, he says, "I think Sterlin should carry it...he seems to have some kind of connection to the Plains the rest of us don't have."

He listens to the discussion about the boat and says, "I agree with Milo and Trellus...let's use the boat for supplies. I think we should load it up before we go because that'll keep our equipment from getting wet. I also think we need to be kind of subtle about going down to the chamber. I mean, if a bunch of us go swimming in full armor and then don't come back up, that's bound to raise some questions. But if we're just swimming, I don't think anyone will notice if we disappear. I've never noticed it, and it looks like it's been going on for quite a while."

If the rest of the pack agrees to use Milo's boat then Anuk prepares to stow his equipment on the skiff. If they do not agree then he works to waterproof his new bow and arrow as best he can before they go swimming. While he packs, he hands Trellus the ioun stone and watches as he casts bull's strength into it. "Thanks, Trellus. And thank you for teaching me how to use the stone." He turns to the rest of the pack and asks, "Anyone else want to cast any spells into the stone before we go?"

Finally, he finishes his preparations by filling two waterskins and then trying out something he's been putting off for a while...preparing entangle -- his first spell.

Flea  d20+10=29
Tuesday June 17th, 2003 9:44:51 PM

Flea pulls the odd bathing garment from the last adventure out of a side pocket of her pack. "Maybe we can put our packs in a cubby hole on this side, and they will show up underneath...the reverse of when we got out? I would rather gear up in the tunnel, than wait until we find the boat on the plains. Besides, didn't Malafret tell us to go through the water, then gear up?"

Flea will change into her bathing garment, carefully rolling her new armour and stowing it in her pack. On her way to the well she will fill her waterskin from one of the four Rattledam fountains used for drinking water. Upon arriving at the well, the rogue will find (Search=29) the same stone from whence she had retrieved her gear when they had come up through the well the last time. She will expect to find her gear safely behind the stone with the carved "F" when she reaches the tunnels underneath the city.

Gilan
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 2:18:57 AM

Gilan prepares his new stuff for the trip through the water. Glancing to the others he nods as they make some comments. "Let someone else carry the compass...I am not sure I want to responsibility."

He gathers his own swimming trunks and makes it into Milo's house to change. He will leave the shield he got with the boat or send it down to the tunnel to gear up, whichever is appropriate. He will also take the time to cast a barkskin and a cure light wounds into the ioun stone.

"Using the boat for extra supplies would be a great idea...less to carry for us." He moves with the rest to the well and takes a seat on the edge. He waits for a few of the others to disappear down and then when it has been long enough he will dive in himself.

Jake
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 3:38:10 AM

Jake nods at the words, listens to everybody's comments, then heads back to his house to pack. Those crispy ration things that last a hell of a long time, a couple of waterskins, he drops off a few items of equipment he probably won't need, and basically goes through everything. While doing this, he's glad his foster dad is out working but endures an endless stream of abuse from the mother who adopted him...and from his five 'sisters'...
Sighing, he heads out, ignoring it, as usual. To the more fun adventures his group tumbles into..

DM Anthony
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 11:30:13 AM

"all your equipment is in the cavern below ready for you to suit up there, the town frowns on weapons and armor worn inside."

Once there plese tell em how much water you each have and we will begin

Trellus
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 12:53:51 PM

Trellus answers Anuk, "No problem. That spell will last 4 hours. So, as soon as we find the whatever it is, cast it on Gry. I'll cast another on Jacob."

The cleric has 4 full waterskins.

"Between me, Gry, Gilan, and Sterlin, we should be fine with water come tomorrow," he says.

"Last thread on a healing potion," he offers.

Sterlin
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 2:40:26 PM

" I do not mind carrying the compass. I can also help with water. I need a container, but I can produce up to five gallons of water four times a day if I prepare the proper spells. "

Gilan
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 2:56:07 PM

As he converses with the others after they have made it to the caves, he checks back over his supplies. "I have two skins of water myself and have prepared two create water spells incase." He slips into his armor and slips on his pack as he waits for the rest to finish.

Looking back up at the others he shakes his head. "How much extra supplies did we pack on the skiff?"

------------------------------------------------
Spell List

0th: create water-2, guidance, light, mending
1st: cure light wounds-2, entangle, shillelagh
2nd: barkskin-2, summon nature's ally II

Did anyone pick up the Bull's Strength Potion or the Invisibility Potion that I layed out on the stool?? If not then Gilan would have picked them back up...just that they may have served someone else better.

Milo
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 4:26:12 PM

upon the skiff is placed enough food and drink for 10 people for 5 days.

Grymash  d20+2=15 d20-2=18
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 5:52:46 PM

Grymash thinks about something. (Wisdom 15, Intelligence 18, natural 20)

"Hmmmm, I wonder if pack got little medalions made of dat druid wood that boats are made of, then grass open up when pack run through it!! Gry think that GOOD idea!! Medalion repel grass, we run full speed .. yeahh!!"

Flea
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 11:00:12 PM

In the chamber under the city, Flea carefully gears up. She pulls her hair straight back so that it is off her face, and ties it in a short tail with the powder blue silk ribbon. As her eyes become accustomed to the low light, she spies the glowing fungi shaped like double sided arrows that mark the route they are to follow. She stays at the edge of the group peering down the dark tunnel, and gives the full waterskin at her side a pat.

At Gilan's query, Flea pipes up: "I'll hold on to that potion of invisibility, if you want?" In the dim light of the tunnel, and with her new armor, all the druid will be able to see is the white gleam of her teeth when she gives him a big grin!

Grymash  d20+5=18
Thursday June 19th, 2003 7:52:39 AM

Grymash gathers up his daggers, bow and arrows and puts them into a bag and ties off the top. His armor is glamoured to look like swimming trunks and a shirt. He swims down to the caves with relative ease ( Swim check 18 - 6= 12) even with the extra weight.

Once down, Grymash opens the compartment that is marked with an "eye" and begins equiping all his items.

"Gry still have suit of breast plate if anyone need." He sits down and waits for the others. He takes out his whetstone and begins to sharpen his double axe. Little sparks fly off the sharpened axe heads with every pass of the stone.

(Grymash has 4 waterskins of water.)

Milo
Thursday June 19th, 2003 8:40:21 AM

like everyone else, he swims down to the secret place and retrieves his items.

using the new gift taught by Malafret, he sends a magic tickle to the fungus arrows and follows them until he is out in the grass.

detemining where it comes out, and where the city is, he goes back to the docks at the safest way possible and retrieves his skiff. making sure all the provisions are there including the water barrels. topping them off he glides his vessel over to where the group will be coming out and waits for them.

DM Anthony (Please place how much water you carry here)
Thursday June 19th, 2003 11:18:02 AM

As you all prepare you all rember that here in this place create water spells seem to aonly create 1/2 of what they should and if you create it out in the open it acracts ALOT of . . . things. However Milo with his boat full of provisions should help. As you suit up and look at one another you get the feeling like this will be your most difficult lesson yet. Go and witness events? what events? Protect them with your lives? Why? What is going on here. A few weeks ago you lived in a strange town with a huge grass dome all the way over it that didnt want you talking about the outside and now you live in a place full of secrects where no one knows you now work for a secrect society know as the second circle. Sometimes life is a bit confusing.

Following the fungus and Malafrets directions you find your self outside about 600 yards from town. Milos boat is tied up here. The grasses have been cut low and woven over to hide this place, and Milo's boat sits outside it. It is full of stuff and ready to go. It will be easy to pull it along under the grass provided the grass dosent get too high and the 20 feet of rope atatched to it is long enough when it does. However it will be like a moving bouy showing everyone above that someone is below, and with you all below pulling, how will you all know that some one has seen you?

The compus is cold the second you get outside and by playing around with it a bit you easily can tell the direction it wishes you to go, for when you hold it out in the right direction it gets suddenly bitter cold and when it is pointing the wrong way it is simply cool. You need to go north east.

Anuk (2 full waterskins)  d20+6=9 d20+6=21
Thursday June 19th, 2003 11:57:16 AM

Anuk makes his way down through the water and into the grotto. He finds the rock he inscribed with the gloved hand, dries off, and gathers all his equipment. After gearing up he tickles the fungus and follows the arrows until he arrives with the others at the secret entrance on the plains. The heat of the day already bears down on him, a sharp contrast to the cool of the water and the caves.

Anuk quickly scans the area looking for signs of anyone watching or following them, but the sudden change from dark to light takes its toll on his vision (spot 9). When Sterlin tells them which direction they need to go, Anuk marks it to be sure he is able to stay on track once he's in the grass (intuit direction 21).

(ooc: Sorry about not posting yesterday. Got a house full of sick kids and parents.)

Trellus (4 waterskins)
Thursday June 19th, 2003 2:56:55 PM

Trellus looks around as Sterlin gets oriented with the compass.

It IS a lot easier to move around in this armor , he notes with satisfaction.

Once they figure out where they're going, Trellus falls into line.
"Gry, will you and Sterlin take the lead again?" he asks.
"And if the Grass gets deep, we'll need someone to ride up top to warn us if something's coming. Someone who can get down in a hurry, too." Trellus grins wryly, "Which leaves me out."

It's common knowledge among the Blood Pack that Trellus has all the quickness of a prarie pig.

Jake
Thursday June 19th, 2003 4:31:22 PM

Jake shrugs his head. "Ah dunno, brothahs...and sistah." He takes a sip of glass grass, pondering. "It seems that our brotha Anuk should take tha front... ah'll covah the back. We know a bit about these plains natcha, and can spot tracks an' all."

Grymash (4 waterskins)  d20+8=18
Thursday June 19th, 2003 5:05:21 PM

Grymash adjusts the steel grass helmet. Its so light, he isnt sure if its on or off. He decides to glamour it into a wrap to better insulate his head and face from the heat (Arabian style). He gives the same treatment to the rest of the breastplate, along with giving it a light color to better reflect the hot beams of light that cut through the grass. (Wilderness Lore 18 to get it right)

"Grymash take front. Who count paces? Me try not walk too fast for pack. Gry think Milo be on his boat. We catch him if he need down fast. Milo know how boat works too!"

Grymash satisfied with his suggestions takes his place at the front. "Ohh yeah ... it be shady if one of you weave barkskin on Gry when trouble happen."

If the pack is ready will go Grymash will start walking in the direction they direct.

Flea (1 full waterskin)
Thursday June 19th, 2003 10:40:54 PM

Flea emerges from the shadows of the tunnel into the bright sunlight of the Plains along with the rest of the pack. While the group figures out the best formation for their route, she watches as two wasps dance on the almost imperceptible breeze.

"About this event we are to witness....should we approach openly, or remain hidden?" she asks of the others.

As they strike out, Flea takes up a place near the front, prepared to reconnaissance ahead of the group, if required.

Gilan(2 waterskins)  d20+4=5 d20+4=14
Thursday June 19th, 2003 11:29:39 PM

Gilan hands over the potion of invisibility to Flea and then makes his way out of the cave. "You might have a use for this." He stops to let his eyes adjust to the sudden brightness and then stretches. It is good to be back on the plains. He watches as his two wasps flit around, the newest one taking in a new bunch of sites.

He looks to the rest as they make some decision on marching order. "I will take the back, as I can travel more freely through the grass." He checks the pull on his scimitar to make sure it will pull with ease and then checks the feel of his shield to make sure it will swing freely into his hand. "Anuk should travel behind Grymash so that he can make sutle adjustments to our heading."

The question of announcing themselves or hiding upon finding the event gives him some pause. "Maybe we should make that decision once we see what the event is."

Milo : 3 Barrels of Water and 6 Waterskins on skiff :
Friday June 20th, 2003 12:42:01 AM

handing the rope to the skiff to Grymash, he says: perhaps you should be the one to pull this. with enough provisions for all of us for 5 days and the extra water, it will probably take someone of your strength to pull it.

Jake (5 waterskins, 4 days rations)
Friday June 20th, 2003 6:27:40 AM

Jake dislikes how he seems to slosh every step of the way, so he leaves a few things behind. Reluctantly, he puts his crossbow and the bolts with it down. Figuring Milo will have plenty of cooking equipment, he leaves his various fire-making gear as well as his iron pot. His gear lighter, he slings on the waterskins, and finds it noticeable, but not as heavy...
(Just had to alter my inventory...sigh. Who needs fishhooks in the plains?? :P)

Sterlin (1 waterskin)
Friday June 20th, 2003 9:02:20 AM

" O.k., I have only basic supplies. The plains provide if you know where to look. I will also memorize some water magic, but we will have to be very very careful when useing it. We all know dangerous things smell water for miles. "

DM Anthony
Friday June 20th, 2003 10:19:59 AM

Anuk casting about looking sees no one anywhere near.

Then as you begin to pull the boat behind you the grass quickly rises up to 10 feet plus. It fast becomes impossible to see more that 12 feet or so in any direction except up. The heat begins quickly and as you sweat no brezze cabn reach you to cool you however the stalks of grass you brush up against seem to soak up your sweat and carry it away from you folling your body into sweating more. The water will go fast at this rate. Who ever has the orb should be leading as they know the direction you are headed in.

Sterlin
Saturday June 21st, 2003 10:44:47 AM

Sterlin walks carefully in the lead holding the compass and following in the direction that it indicates by changeing temperatures.

sitting on the skiff he pulls the canopy up giving him some shade and then pulls out a a small square piece of leather. rolling it up and placing a round piece of glass at one end and a smaller piece at the other, he fastens the leather together and then places the small end to his eyes and starts looking around.

Anuk
Sunday June 22nd, 2003 4:19:23 PM

Anuk takes a place near Sterlin and follows along through the hot grasses. "So...any guesses as to what we're looking for? Whatever it is, I hope it makes a lot of shade."

Flea  d20+10=21 d20+6=20 d20+8=10
Sunday June 22nd, 2003 7:18:35 PM

Flea searches actively for anything out of the ordinary (Search=21) that might signify the event they are to witness, all the while keeping her eyes open for anything that might be waiting in ambush (Spot=20). Since she can only look through the grasses, and straight overhead (the grass being too tall to look over top) she keeps her ears trained for unusual sounds (Listen=10), but the gnome can only hear the whispering of the grasses, and the light chinking and clinking sounds of armor and weapons as pack silently follow Sterlin and the compass.

Gilan  d20+4=22
Sunday June 22nd, 2003 11:45:35 PM

Gilan follows along after the others, keeping up his duty as rear-guard. With a set of light whistles he sends his two wasps off into the group to do a little scouting of thier own and report back to him every thousand buzzes.

His ears pick up many things out in the grass and he concentrates to focus on anything that is out of the ordinary in the grass.

[listen: 22]
[another opening for Carla with the wasps]

Trellus
Monday June 23rd, 2003 8:02:35 AM

Trellus trudges along in the middle of the pack, taking rationed sips of water and occasionally glancing up at the boat to make sure Milo is OK.

I wonder if I've a spell to shade this heat , he idly wonders.

He spends the time mentally running through spells as he follows his packmates.

Jake  d20+1=11
Monday June 23rd, 2003 5:49:52 PM

The stoic half-elf keeps up with everyone else easily, his long stride forcing him to take shorter steps as he walks behind the halfling. He keeps his ears peeled. (dc 11)

DM Anthony
Monday June 23rd, 2003 9:42:21 PM

The treck is long and hard, many bugs, many rest stops. The boat getting heavier every step. Its about an hour from dusk when Milo spots something ahead. the grass seems to have been trampled or shortened in a wide wid circle about 200 yards ahead.

Milo
Monday June 23rd, 2003 9:46:57 PM

Signaling down below he gets Grymash to stop. dropping a rope ladder over the side he climbs down and with everyone present he describes what he sees.

Flea
Monday June 23rd, 2003 11:49:00 PM

When Milo reports what he has seen, Flea whispers: "Do we want to advertise our approach, or sneak up and investigate?" She goes on to volunteer "When we get a little closer, I can go ahead to scout, taking a route parallel to this path and ahead of the group. I can report back if I see anything unusual." As an afterthought, she adds: "If the grass isn't too thick, maybe we should all fan out a bit, rather than approach in single file?"

Tiev and Zilia  d20+9=23 d20+9=10
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 12:16:28 AM

The sun glints off the wings of the wasps as they fly ahead of the druid and the pack. At ease in the familiar environment, Tiev performs an aerial survey (Spot=23) while the smaller Zilia tries to keep up (Spot=10).

They will report back to Gilan, if they see anything of interest.

Jake
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 4:41:25 AM

Jake silently draws his sword and readies his shield. Anytime something unusual happens, it doesn't hurt to have things ready, he thinks to himself. He watches the others with his cat-like eyes...

Trellus  d4+1=2
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 10:26:00 AM

Trellus listens to Milo's report,

"Well, its about time," he says quietly. Sweat is dripping off the young man's face, and he is eagerly anticipating the cooler temperatures of nightfall.

"Anuk, I think its time to hit Gry with that strength spell."

Trellus steps over to Jacob, and goes through his own incantation to strengthen the warrior's limbs.
(Bulls Strength = +2 Str)

"Flea's ideas sound shady to me," he replies. "She can scout ahead and let us know what's weaving. We should probably stick close though, no more than three columns."

"Should we leave the boat here, or try to pull it under the grass, or something to keep it out of sight?"

Grymash (protection from evil)  d20+8=20
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 12:29:13 PM

Grymash casts Protection from Evil spell on himself after hearing Milo's report. He then checks the winds to determine if they are up or down wind (Wilderness Lore 20).

In a low voice, "Gry try to figure out which way wind blow. They maybe smell us get close. If pack down wind, pack need Pass without Trace weaved on us. Pack smell no more! One of you druids have Barkskin ready for Gry."

Gilan[barkskin](Armor Class: 21)
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 3:30:53 PM

Gilan stops with the rest and moves forward slowly to stand with the others. He listens to them as they talk and nods in agreement with some of the ideas. "I would have to agree that the skiff is going to be a liability at this time."

Looking around he thinks on things a little. "So lets break into three small groups with a fighter in each at least...maybe moving in towards the clearing about five feet apart, like Trellus suggested." He glances to the rest and waits to see what they think. "Lets do some buffing of our group and see what we see." He pulls out his scimitar and slips his shield of his back, readying himself for battle.

[casts barkskin on Grymash and then himself: +3AC]

Anuk  d20+6=21 d20+2=22 d20+6=18
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 3:34:55 PM

"Good idea, Trellus," says Anuk. He reaches into his cloak to retrieve the purple stone, turns to face Grymash, and casts the spell on him (bulls strength).

He turns again and faces the direction they're headed to make sure he knows which way to go should the pack become separated (intuit direction 21). "I'll lead a column. Anyone who wishes can come with me." With that, he moves off 15 feet to the left of the group, listening and watching for anything unusual. (listen 22 - natural 20! spot 18)

Milo
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 3:54:24 PM

Casts Mage Armor on himself.

Sterlin
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 10:19:22 PM

Sterlin watches ahead quietly, wondering what they are about to witness.

Flea  d20+23=36 d20+6=26
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 11:35:59 PM

The rogue scouts about 40ft ahead of the pack and slightly left of center. She stops where the grasses start to thin out, staying just back from the flattened area, invisible in the shadows of the taller grass (Hide=36). If there is anything out there, Flea is determined to find it(Spot=26, nat. 20!)and report back to the pack.

Jake
Wednesday June 25th, 2003 4:34:45 AM

Jake just stands ready, watching. He nods in response to the spell, and suspects that whatever's going to happen will take all of his skill...in his mind, he goes over a few practice battle tactics.

Trellus
Wednesday June 25th, 2003 10:12:55 AM

"Flea, wait a sec," Trellus whispers.

He quickly steps over to the small rogue and lays a hand on the top of her head.
"Domi protect you", he intones.

(Domain power Protective Ward - +4 bonus to Flea's next save roll. Lasts for one hour or until used).

Then, Flea scampers ahead to scout.

Milo

sits on the ground, playing with a stalk of grass, lounging around while he waits for the God to tell him what he sees next.

Dm Anthony
Friday June 27th, 2003 10:30:26 AM

As you all approach the strange clearing you quickly see the largest group of prarrie pigs you have ever seen and for some reasone they are not eating in the random lines that they normaly do but into a large circle, clearing the grass almost down to the ground. Having seen farmers try to clear cut the grass before you notice another strange thing. Teh grass isnt pushing back. Normaly when something like this happens the grass tries to force its way back in, fast as if by magic, but not now. In fact the grass seems to be allowing this to happen, then scanning the clearing you notice another strange thing. Some of the prarrie pigs are in large coccons, others are halfway through making a coccon. The ones in the spun coccons look like large rocks and the others look like half rock and half pig.... It is a most unusual thing....could this be it? the first event? wna what are you to whitness? Protect what?

Flea remembers her first encounters with prairie pigs and the ranchers who seemed to farm them. She looks about quickly (Spot 11) to see if someone or something is 'cultivating' the animals, before returning to the pack to recount the odd sight of the cocooning rock-pigs and the bizarre clearing they are creating in the grass. Despite her excitement, she is very quiet (Move Silently=31, nat. 20!), and at all time remains hidden (Hide=36) from view.

Anuk stares into the clearing, fascinated by the behavior of the prairie pigs. He makes mental notes of the sizes, shapes, and colors of the various cocoons and wonders if this is something they do on their own, or if they are being guided.

He looks across the opening, listening and searching for anything he might "protect". (spot 14, listen 14)

"Sterlin, if YOU don't know....." he says quietly, letting the rest trail off.

Trellus keeps his eyes on the grass, and waits for Flea's return.

taking the rope from Grymash, Milo ties off the skiff securely. then he goes up to the nearest Praire Pig, and pulling out his speak with animals potion, he drinks it waiting for the effects to work.

Dm Anthony
Monday June 30th, 2003 10:21:33 AM

Its hard to stay hidden when you have a large skiff bobbing up and down on the grass anouncing your presence to all who wish to see it.

The Pigs seem completely wild, in fack some of you having seen domesticated pigs instantly can see the diffrences. Domesticated ones are all one color, smooth and clear as their color changes the flavor of their meet, however these are mottled and all diffrent. Dosmesticated ones wave smaller feeding pads under them and their eye stalks are shorter, and domseticated ones would be moving toward you in hopes of a treat as these, those that can anyway move away.

Milos potion while inefective reveals something quite important to the small man. Prarrie Pigs are not animals.

Gilan watches in some amazement as the pigs go about cocooning themselves. Looking to the others he shrugs and goes back to watching. "Do you think maybe we are to protect as many of these as we can....from themselves or something else?"

Seeing that Milo has already slipped out into the clearing area, he looks back and sighs. That floating skiff is not going to allow them to hide that is for sure. "Guys...I think we are going to have a hard time hiding." He steps out on the edge of the clearing and casts around for anything.

She feels brimming with courage and is much obliged to the cleric for his blessing.

Fearing some sort of a trap, the rogue strings her bow, and selects a red fletched arrow quiver on her back.

"Let's close in on those cocoons, so we're close in case anything comes out of the Grass."

Trellus moves out into the circle, carefully not stepping on any pigs, until he's some 60' from the cocoons. Then, he waits.

"We can't hurt these cocoons," he states. Then, he tilts his head slightly, as a thought strikes.

"I hope whatever comes out of those things feels the same way about us."

Gilan also moves in to take up a position of protection. His scimitar and shield are both at hand, but he shakes his head some. So many strange things have been happening lately.

He looks to Milo and nods about his comment. "That is a good thought." With a start he cannot help but wonder who he will have to protect. "We may even have to protect those that have not cocooned from whatever comes out of those that have...or the other way around."

He swallows hard as he divides his attention between the cocoons and the prairie pigs. "Malafret said that this event must happen but that we must protect it at all costs...so maybe a little warning of possible outside danger would not hurt."

As the pack sits near the cocooned pigs they can feel heat coming off of them, and something moving inside them. Watching the bounders rush into the clearing everyone begins to notice soething by watching them, they dont move in formation like the ones you have fought in the past but more importantly there is something about teir eyes. A wild untamed look. In fact its almost as if they were a pack of wolves or something. They are not intent on killing the pigs but in eating them.

Gry charges 100 yards across the clearing and smashes his axe into the first bounder. Once he is there you can see that these bounders are smaller than the ones your used to as well. However there are a bunch of them. Some vear off looking frightened of the half orc to try and eat other pigs in the clearing but quite a few seem to think he would make a better meal than the pigs and they surround him quickly.

One of the half cocconed pigs across the way is found by the bounders and a frighting thing happens. The Bounder sniffs at the thing and then gives a howl of fury and pounces on it, not eating it but ripping it to shreads. When he is done there is nothing left but pulp, then turning the Bounder urinates on the remains.

The group and Gry are 100 yards apart.

Gry has 6 Bounders surrounding him, another 8 or 10 are in the clearing.

As the entangle spell goes off you can all hear the growling and snapping of entrapt bounders.

Jake looks somewhat befuddledly at the Bounders. He was standing next to his cocoon, waiting for one to come close. And none did. How disappointing! And yet Grymash charged forward anyways...is he crazy? Doesn't he realize there's at least a dozen bounders! What a time to leave his crossbow back at home!!!
The Bounder's reaction to the half-cocooned prairie pig is even more bizarre. In fact...watching it, Jake searches himself, trying to figure out if this is something natural, or something inhuman...but can't seem to find a gut feeling on which to settle that action. (Wilderness Lore check of 7 :P)
No matter what, though, Jake says to himself that at least one coccoon should survive. He examines his.
(Anthony, is the coccoon with the prairie pig in it movable? That is, could I carry or put it in the skiff, without damaging it? Or does it seem anchored to the ground, and easily damageable? I used my Animal Empathy skill to figure out if it is.. DC 17. (my wilderness lore with the same roll would be DC 18)).
In any case, this round, Jake merely guards his one coccoon, and moves between any bounder getting even close to it. If they get too close, he also tries shouting at it....

Having earlier made plans to work in concert with the brave ranger during combat situations, Flea takes off at a run (4 x 20ft), but stays close to the perimeter of the clearing in order to take advantage of the shadows cast by the taller grasses. She takes another red-fletched arrow from her quiver as she tries to make a mental note of the number of cocoons and their placement (Search=24)

"Domi's LIGHT! Of all the sunbaked, treadle headed...." Trellus trails off with an exasperated exhale.

The cleric takes stock. Gry is really far away, and surrounded, Anuk's going after him, got no idea where in the Grass Flea is, and Milo's up on the boat.
Which leaves four of us here, plus Milo up high to watch these things...Domi take you Gry, that was really stupid.

In an attempt to get the raging half orc to work his way back, Trellus yells "Gry! Help! We're in trouble!"

If he can do it without getting cut off by any bounders, Trellus moves out 60' with Anuk to help defend him. The cleric keeps a wary eye for the bounders however, and will not risk any of them getting between him and the cocoons.

He then seems to notice the Coccons and barks a loud sound and those bounders not busy with Gry begin leaping toward you all.

Milo from high on his perch tags a bounder with a magic missile.

Trellus misses the bounder and then re-joins the others around the coccon.

Grymash strikes a bounder and then retreats back to the coccons as well. His intimidation check seems to be in effective, in fact he notices something about the eyes of these bound3ers, the way they move. They seem like wild animals, not the inteligent killing machiens you fought before.

Milo casts glitter dust which slows the bounders down but dosent seem to effect them as a whole. However it looks as if he bought more time before the pack is surrounded.

Gilan uses his hit when ihe is approached and it is a good hit but dosent seem to be critical....

Sterlin casting entangle seems to be inefective too however it and the glitter dust spell buy the party one more round to prepare before they are surrounded.

Flea's arrow misses and she realizes that if she dosent want to get caught out side the circle of protection of the coccons and her pack mates she had better get back there quick.

Jake strikes the bounder killing it and struggles to think......

Anuk looks about to see if anyone saw that....

The bounders cant close this round due to the exellent spell casting.

"Keep in front of the cocoons, dudes!"

Trellus turns and casts a spell which detonates in a concussive burst amongst the three approaching bounders. He centers his spell to catch two of them in the 10' radius without also catching Grymash.

(Sound Burst, 1hp damage, Will Save 16 or stunned 1 round).

Gilan takes the time to glance at Jake and laughs. "I doubt that Tiev can carry a gourd of water by himself and Zilia is still too little for that...she will make a fine scout though." He watches as their combined attacks takes down one of the bounders and laughs again. "Well...one down and many to go...we should use this tactic more often Jake."

Glancing to see how the others are doing he is happy to note that they have pulled back to cover the cocoons. The fact that they have slowed them down as well is a welcome sight. "Lets hope our luck holds."

As another bounder moves in he brings his scimitar in a crossways slashing motion, that allows for Jake to attack from the other side with no interference from him.

The rogue realizes she may have been a little overconfident in her new armour and the added protection provided by the cleric's spell. She feels a little vulnerable away from the group. so she sneaks back(Hide=30)to be near the pack and the 3 remaining cocoons. She sets herself up in a position to surprise any unsuspecting bounder and looses another red fletched arrow, noting how true their shafts are. Flea thinks to herself, I really must thank Gillan for these nice arrows. (Hit=AC 25, damage=11)

(OOC: I assume from DM post July 7, that I am within 15 ft., and thus can move and hit, otherwise, just move.)

"Grymash! You charge one of the other ones! Trellus, move between the last one and the cocoons if it charges! We have to stop them!"
As he's shouting this without a hint of his customary drawl, Jake mirrors Gilan in sliding to the unprotected side of the Bounder and flanking it, and gives another wild, but powerful swing into its side. He's confident in his group's ability to stop the other two bounders momentarily...

(Flanking, Power Strike -5 this time, ohmy, potential for a critical (AC 17 on the second strike!), doing 1d10+5 *2 +5 damage. Wow.))

Anuk (AC 20, bless)
Wednesday July 9th, 2003 1:19:41 AM

Anuk takes up a defensive position near Flea. He returns his bow to his shoulder and draws both of his swords. Looking at Flea with a grin he says, "Shall we? Let me draw 'em near and you get behind 'em. It'll be like dancin'!"

Milo
Wednesday July 9th, 2003 9:30:19 AM

placed directly in front of the oncoming bounders to the cocoon, so close they can't avoid it, Milo places another spell in their path.

level with the ground, attached to the tamped grass, a large Web appears.

Wednesday July 9th, 2003 10:15:18 AM

Grymash continues to roar his battle cry. He twirls his double battle axe menacingly. He waits for the oncoming charge of the bounders. His fury growing with every second.

(Readies an action, once in range he will unload his full attack on the first bounder. Hit AC 35 crit threat, Hit 30 Critcal, and 17. Damage from critical hit is 57. Must make Fort save DC 15 or die instantly from massive damage. The last hit damage is 21, but it probably missed.)

If any try to run by the raging half-orc he will take his attack of opportunity and strike them as well.
(Hit AC 26 for 20 points of damage)

Flea's arrow slices through the air into the leg of one of the Bounders. Simultaneously, Trellus finishes his spell with a spectacular cone of twirling, pure sonic force that sends rippling waves through the grass and impacts the bounders fully, and leaves one of them stunned. As the grass folds back into place slowly, webs materialize over the area, forming a quite physical barrier to the coccoons.
Gilan and Jake wait for their bounder to approach, ready to flank it on either side, while Anuk stands to the side guarding Flea and the second coccoons. Grymash stands by himself, twirling his orcan double-ax, somehow raging and yet not charging mindlessly into battle...in fact...he's amazingly clear-headed for a person frothing at the mouth... Must be all those lessons from the monks.

ADM Mikey - Bounder's
Friday July 11th, 2003 6:44:58 AM

You are all conscious of the wild bounders feasting upon the prairie pigs in the background. Many have now stopped and are feasting like wolves in packs.

The three that were originally charging you are daunted by the web barrier and the strange screaming that comes from behind it. Still, they probably can see or smell you. One, stunned by the sound, rolls on the ground attempting to dispel its vertigo. The two others growl impatiently with hunger and sniff at the webs, seeking to bypass them. One begins pacing towards the west side of them, impatient to feast on what lays beyond. The other, having an arrow in its side causing it pain, whines annoyedly as it begins pushing its way through the webs, tearing them with its formidable strength. They are even closer, and yet you have slowed them down even longer.

Meanwhile, more wild bounders move up in groups seeking to feed their insatiable appetites. None of these are an immediate threat, but soon they could be...

Flea(19 ac)(+1 Bless, +4 Protective Ward)
Sunday July 13th, 2003 10:23:43 AM

Flea takes her cue from Anuk, and stows her shortbow. She grins at the curly haired human, and answers "You're on, ranger!" and with a fancy little florish takes out her short sword. In anticipation of flanking a bounder with Anuk as her partner, she finds the best spot to position herself while waiting for the creatures to attack.

Together the wasps fly over the area of grass cropped close by the grazing prairie pigs as they make a reconnaissance of the area. They will report to Gilan in order to provide him with a description of what they saw including the number and placement of the bounders.

Sterlin waits silently, hopeing the bounders will be happy with easy prey.

Anuk
Sunday July 13th, 2003 5:58:55 PM

Anuk's swords gleam in the sun and heat. He positions himself so that he is protecting the cocoons, but with enough room to fall back if a bounder attacks, hoping to draw one of the creatures between him and Flea. Nearly dancing with anticipation, he watches the beasts warily, waiting to make his move.

(I need to know a position of everything. I dont know how far anything is away from us. Im not about to charge if I dont know how far it will be or what to expect. I made that mistake just a few posts back when I thought the bounders were just 40 to 60 feet away and they turned out to be over a 100 yards. Im not seeing the situation here and Im not going to charge into something blind. Please give us distances and positions. What spell effects are up and where they are? How far are we away from each other? Where are the coccoons?)

(Im also playing Trellus this week too, so give me his position.)

Gilan[AC: 18/19 against chosen opponent, Bull's Srength+4, Bless]
Monday July 14th, 2003 7:26:09 PM

Gilan smiles to Jake and salutes him with his scimitar. "Seems that we have a workable plan going here." He continues to keep a bounder isolated between himself and Jake so that they can work in concert with each other.
