On the road of suspicions again

Goodbyes, and hellos - DM Ian
Monday July 7th, 2003 6:23:11 PM

The goodbyes between companions takes some time. By the time everything is said, everyone is hugged and, or kissed, its well into the late afternoon.

Gathering up possessions and weaponry, and stowing the new gifts in pack and pouch, the group moves out of the Hearthfire, and out onto the road. The sounds of children at play and families working recedes as you walk out of the Hamlet.

Coming around the first bend where you initially encountered Abram, the group first hears a meaty thud a short distance away accompanied by the sound of breath being forcefully driven from lungs. As the group takes a few more steps around a bush on the side of the road, the source is revealed.

Abram is bent over, clutching his stomach, panting for breath. His dappled riding horse is a short distance away tied to a tree, packed as if for travel. He is still wearing his maille, hanging to his knees, but he bears no weaponry. Each of you remember him handing his sword and dagger to Bill before the party started.

Standing nearby is a stout, swarthy human male, with dark eyes leering out over a full, bushy beard. The man isn't wearing any obvious armor, but bears a six and a half foot hooked glaive, and a buckler. The whole image of the man is greasy, from ill-tanned boots of some questionable skin, to a mass of unkempt hair, and a stained, formerly blue tunic.

Doubled over in pain, Abram reels for a moment, before the broad shouldered man uses the haft of his pole to hook behind Abram's knee and throw Abram to the ground, hard. Then, he follows up far too quickly with a snapping blow with the same end of his pole to Abram's ribs, forcing Abram to clutch in pain once again.

"You foolish weakling. Where is your courage now? You can't even fight back... a suitable follower for a god that can't even stay alive."

Each insult is punctuated with a cruel, snapping kick. Each of you recognizes hasted action in those blows.

The whole scene is about sixty feet from the party, and neither man seems to realize the party is watching, as of yet.

Arien
Monday July 7th, 2003 7:25:38 PM

Back in the Inn:

"I thank you for your gifts Bill Troublefinder," the elf says solemnly. "I wish you well on journey through life my friend. May your path be true and your days many and them all filled with happiness. Hail and farewell Bill Troublefinder, until our paths cross once again."

On the Road:

Arien activates his boots of speed and charges towards Abram, trusting that the rest of the group would be close behind.

Draax
Monday July 7th, 2003 7:55:40 PM

As Draax sees the situation he yells, "HEY YOU, STOP THAT!!!"

He runs towards the two men and watches as Arien easily outdistance him.

Tratain
Monday July 7th, 2003 9:24:08 PM

Tratain Runs as fast (x3 or x4 movement whatever I can manage) as he can towords the two combatants. Tratain Tries to place himself between the two and will intercept the next hit ment for Abrams. (Protector Ability)

Feng
Monday July 7th, 2003 11:09:38 PM

Feng kicks his war horse into a gallop. He slips the back half of the weapon under his arm (for support)and moves the front axe head out wide.

OOC: Not sure if I could cover the distance on horse back and still get an attack in.

(You may indeed charge twice your horse's movement and take a single attack at +2 to hit. If necessary, I'll handle the roll in the DM post later today. - DM Ian)

Bill Troublefinder - the closing goodbye
Tuesday July 8th, 2003 2:44:23 AM

The halfling enjoys and sorrows through the bittersweet time of saying goodbye to his friends.

-- "I will, Rond. You too."

-- "Some things that are done in secret, Feng, will one day be shouted from the rooftops. But we need no ballads or bardic praise. We have the solidity of friendship to sustain us, and a love for honor, righteous justice, and truth. And fun. Don't forget fun, Feng!"

-- Bill laughs at Draax's words. When asked what next he will do, he shrugs his shoulders. "Read, write, play with my nephews & nieces, maybe travel a bit. Fish some. Talk with Yappa." He holds his arms out. "There are so many things one can do in this wide Wold."

-- At Renik's question, he looks into the eyes of his friend for a long moment. "I will miss you, Renki. You will do well, nevertheless." Then Renik 'hears' 'Write often, white wolf.'

-- "The bottom of my heart says, 'My pleasure!'" he tells Setanos. "Hold tight to truth, and slip away from evil, Setanos."

-- Bill accepts Arien's words and blessings with a twinkle in his eye, and a nod of his head.

Bill hands to Tratain just before the group leaves a bundle, wrapped in canvas, with a note stating, 'These belong to Abram of Domi.'

"He was a paladin of your faith, Tratain. Setanos, you need to hear this, too. I saw him, in Plateau City, before Marteaus' evil ascension. Abram was clad in bright armor, and surrounded by children who adored him. He is a good man, though much trodden down since. I charge you to treat him as your brother, and a man of honor. Something has wounded his soul. Perhaps you will be instruments in Domi's hand to bring healing, perhaps restoration."

With Rombi on his shoulders, sweet sister Skirra beside him, his folks behind him, Bill waves goodbye to all as they go to meet with Abram, and to find the ship.

Tuesday July 8th, 2003 2:45:13 AM

Sizing the situation up quickly the rogue draws his bow, notches one of the new Holy arrows found in the dragon's lair, and sends it whistling in a deadly arc towards the brutal attacker (Crit if AC 24 hits, 13HP standard + 13 Crit + 6 Holy dmg if target is evil = 30 HP! Woo hoo!)

"Stand down or die!" he cries. "You attack again at your mortal peril!"

Then, with a whispered "adlevo!" he activates his Winged Boots, rising several inches from the ground.

Rond
Tuesday July 8th, 2003 6:50:27 AM

Over hearing the conversation and feeling his guts twist as he suspects a follower of Marteaus. Rond sounds the horn of goodness and hopes that will back up Reniks words. (effect around Abram). Rond will close as best he can.

---OOC do you want updated character sheets after current modules? Can I run with current revisions to Rond?

(Feel free to run with your current version, if you like. I have a list of recent changes. However, I'll accept character sheet revisions as often as you care to send them. - DM Ian)

Setanos (AC 16 HP 72)
Tuesday July 8th, 2003 8:06:47 AM

Setanos runs up with Tratain, Axe drawn and sheild ready. Although unsure of much that is going on, he trusts his friends judgement.

Tuesday July 8th, 2003 6:06:42 PM

More than half the group takes off towards Abram, crossing the intervening distance with alacrity. Tratain and Setanos sprint to a sliding stop between the bearded glaivesman and Abram, who is still doubled over in pain. The next blow doesn't land on Abram, however, as the hasted man turns to meet Feng's charge and reply with violence.

Arien easily covers the ground, and comes to a stop next to Abram, and behind the rather imposing defense of Tratain and Setanos' shields. He sees that Abram is coughing up blood, and shaking unsteadily, not really making any attempt to rise or defend himself. Before he jumps into the fray, however, Arien catches the barest sparkle of something above the party. Looking up, he perceives the warp and shimmer of a scrying sensor, suspended about forty feet directly over the battle.

This group is in a loose cluster in the middle of the road, right at the bend. The road turns gradually to the left after this point, and is about fifteen feet wide, with a small additional margin before the surrounding orchard trees and low lying vegetation begin to clutter the side of the road.

Even as Feng rides the bearded man down, the man turns to meet him with raised glaive. Then, the man's façade -shatters- with the image of an unkempt wild mercenary falling away like the pieces of a broken window catching sunlight in the fall to the ground. The revealed... thing... stands about five and a half feet tall, still broad shouldered and bandy legged, but with sickly, grayish scaled skin, a bristling wire-like beard befouled with rotting pieces of flesh, and a twisted, porcine foot long tail casting a shadow over cloven hooves. The thing radiates an unspeakable stench of offal and burnt blood.

In addition, its glaive subtly changes as well, adopting a wicked edge of sawed teeth and a cruel barb on the backspike. Both glaive and buckler bear a low, pulsing blackish aura, as well as a disconcerting shimmer about the beast's frame, and the hue of stoneskin upon it's scaled flesh.

It greets Feng's charge, and Renik's shouted command, with a flurry of hasted blows and a shout of, "Hai! I accept your challenge, weak paladin and protectors! I would have butchered this man for the sport, but a barbazu of the Legion will never back down! Look to -your- life, mortal!"

Three hacking chops hammer Feng, piercing his defenses to impact for a total of 49 points of damage. Feng also winces as the glaive's serrated teeth tear at his flesh. (Feng has been affected by a wounding effect, and will bleed 6 points per round until further notice.)

Feng replies with a single slicing blow, but misses as his blow is deflected by the shimmering field around the beast.

Draax is now about twenty feet from the fight, with Rond about ten feet behind him. As Rond slows a bit to sound his newly gifted horn, Setanos, Arien, Tratain, and Abram are covered with a circle of protection, which bodily shoves the beastly thing another foot away. Both warriors will be able to attack next round with a charge bonus, if they so desire.

Renik's arrow slams into the beast's flank, scoring a searing wound that smokes odiously (but no critical). Renik remains about sixty feet away, and rising from the ground, has three combatants between his bow and his target. Perhaps if he were to rise before the impending charge, only one person would be considered engaged for his next volley.

Seeing the beast change, Rond's face takes on a look of determination. Not wanting to take any chances Rond tries to flank the beast opposite of Feng. He'll put away the horn and pull out his bastard sword and short sword. Rond toys with whether he should start the flaming, and then decides not to for now. With only the one attacker present, Rond will do his best to dodge any attacks he receives.

The rogue flies forward and upward, closing fast and ending up hovering some 20 feet in the air and behind the creature. From this vantage point he has a good view of the battle as it unfolds.

Suddenly wary that this creature may not be alone, he rapidly scans the surrounding area (Spot 19), before launching another arrow at the evil beast below (AC 26 for 13 normal +11 Holy = 24 HP).

If he spots the scrying portal (Spot 26) and recognizes it for what it is (Int 13) he yells "Can anyone dispel this spyhole?"

To the barbazu he calls: "Look to your life, you scaley grey guttersnipe! If life it can be called! Weak paladin? Strong enough for the likes of you I'll wager! Cut him down Feng!"

But in truth Renik is unnerved by the ferocity of the blows that struck the half orc, and the blood that flows freely from his wounds. Another attack like that...

"Protectors! Stand to Feng! Someone heal him, quickly!"

It is with no small relief that he sees Arien transport Abram out of harm's way. Quick thinking, that. "Heal him Arien, we may well need him back on his feet before this is done!" he calls to the wizard.

He calls down to those engaged in melee "Surround it! Everyone up close take up flanking positions!" (OOC: remember, everyone in close should get +2 to hit) "Spellcasters pull back out of striking range and support the front line!"

Tratain's dispel and Arien's slow spells impact the beast. The blackish, pulsing aura fades from the thing's glaive, as does part, but not all of the protective aura around the barbazu. In addition, the haste spell is dispelled, causing the beast to shriek.

Rising into the sky just as the group closes in, Renik launches an arrow which skips off the shielding aura, and goes sailing off somewhere in the trees. From this vantage point, he can clearly see the scrying sensor hovering forty feet above the fight, and cries out, "Can anyone dispel this spyhole?"

(Detecting scrying portals is a scrying check, not spot, but your roll plus int modifier is sufficient to the task, in this case.)

Setanos casts an acid arrow spell, which the beast dodges.

Draax rolls to one side of the fight, covering the two casters long enough for them to get their spells off without being counterattacked.

Rond and Feng, all close on the beast, with Rond slipping around its frontal arc to flank it. For just a moment the beast parries furiously, slapping aside one of Rond's blows. The other blow lands and is deflected by stoneskin. However, the beast weaves when it should have ducked, and Feng's blow catches the infernal thing solidly on its chest, smashing it's body asunder. Even as the blow lands, Feng is sure that if the barbazu's defenses had not been lowered, the blow would not have inflicted quite as much harm.

The blow cleaves the beast in twain, but as it falls it's body collapses in a foul sludge and stench that splatters on the ground and besmirches the boots of those nearby. All of the barbazu's equipment vanishes as well, with the exception of its pulsing black glowing buckler, which falls to the ground with a metallic clang.

Arien reaches down to lay a hand on Abram, and both flicker and disappear, reappearing a hundred feet down the road towards the Hamlet.

Feng bleeds 6 more hit points, as his torn wounds ache with pain and blood.

Suddenly the road is quiet, except for the creak of armor as everyone looks around and relaxes, and the hoof falls of Feng's warhorse circling to return to nuzzle Feng.

Draax
Wednesday July 9th, 2003 6:56:44 PM

Draax runs up to the fight just as the beast vanishes, "Wow Feng! What a hit." He reaches into his backpack and pull as potion of cure light wounds that he tosses to Feng. "Hey you're bleeding pretty bad, you should take care of that before it gets worse."

He looks around for Abram and then locates the man and Arien a little away from the group. He looks up at the spyhole that Renik yells about and wonders if their unseen adversary will send another of its minions. He wipes all the sludge off of his boots and begins to move towards Arien and Abram. "I see we have another unknown enemy, maybe the boss can enlighten us to what that was about. Unless someone can do something about that peephole we should get out of here and see to wounded."

Tratain walks over to Feng First as the glaive wounds he took looked pretty nasty. Tratain casts Cure Critical Wounds (Substitued for Freedom of Movement) and Heals Feng(27). "That was a very impressive Blow Feng, that fight could have gone very differently had the Devil had opportunity to attack again. It seemed very strong to me."

Tratain Reches down into his pockets of his very stylish pants and retrieves one of his gifts from Bill, the wand of cure light wounds and prepares to heal Feng again and then Abram if he should need healing also.

Feng (1 damage)  d8+4=6
Wednesday July 9th, 2003 11:45:07 PM

Feng hands the potion back to Draax. "I will be alright and you never know when that will come in handy. Thanks anyway."

He nods his thanks to Tratain before placing his hand over the bloody hole in his side. He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes using the divine strength given to him to heal the wound. [lay on hands for an additional 27] The half-orc is suprised to see a small cut remain. The wound was nastier than he origionally thought. Feng rubs his horse's neck affectionately and looks down at the demon's remains. He notes the buckler lying on the ground and hopes it can be destroyed. Feng grabs his horse's reins and leads him down the road to where Arien and Abram stand. Summoning what magic he has Feng casts a minor healing spell on Abram [CLW for 6].

"Abram how are you feeling? Perhaps you should ride Degg until we find a place to rest."

Renik
Thursday July 10th, 2003 2:28:54 AM

"Magnificent work, my friend" smiles Renik, floating gently back to earth and slapping the half orc on the back. "Weak paladin indeed!"

He peers nervously at the scrying sensor and says "Well, someone seems mighty interested in us. I just hope it's someone friendly." There is not much conviction in his words.

He walks to Abram. "We should move out at once, if you are well enough. As we go perhaps you could tell us what you know of that creature."

Arien
Thursday July 10th, 2003 5:14:59 AM

When the beast dies Arien deactivates the magic of his boots and helps Abram up. Should Abram prove too weak to walk, Arien will offer him the carpet of flying to rest on while they continue on to their meeting with Marcus. If however Abram can ride Arien will ride the carpet himself, keeping the speed down to stay apace with the others. "I doubt that anything that sent that Devil would be friendly. That was, as it claimed itself, a Barbazu. If I had to hazard a guess a mage on no little power sent that thing after us. The Barbazu had several enchantments on it that only a mage could have done, I suspect that whomever it was scrying on us would be the same person who sent that thing here." Turning slightly Arien looks at Abram, "Did the Devil say anything else before we arrived?"

Rond
Thursday July 10th, 2003 8:58:16 AM

"I believe we should probably wait until we hear from Abram. It's too early to tell whether it was someone after us, or after our employer.

Is this scry point still visible, that someone mentioned? We may need to move somewhere, or do what we can to not be detected."

Reforming, and questions - DM Ian
Thursday July 10th, 2003 6:03:51 PM

Abram forces himself to his feet with Arien's assistance, as the group moves back down the trail to meet around him. This leaves the steel buckler laying alone in the middle of the road at the bend, which is now about a hundred feet north of the party. It still pulses with a clinging darkness.

As the Tratain finishes his prayer of healing upon Feng, Arien and Renik notice the scrying point wink out of existence. Apparently, whoever was watching either ended the spell or moved the scrying sensor.

Once standing, Abram doesn't quite meet the gaze of those nearby, shame written across his features. Turning his head to spit a bit of blood into a nearby bush, he begins to speak, his voice flat and rusty again.

"I'd never seen anything like that before. That beast appeared out of nowhere. The only thing it said before you arrived was something about finally having been assigned a job that it would enjoy."

Then, finally catching his breath, he continues in a lower volume, "All I know is that I've been working since the... Year of... Ascension, for a man named Marcus. I haven't seen him in about three weeks, but I got a sending spell with the right code that said to bring you to him. The meeting place is a sea elven village on the coast about two days from here. Marcus said that he would be waiting there, to, as he said, identify himself to you properly."

Abram then pauses, and looks up to gaze at the group before saying, "Thank you for my life."

It appears that saying such a thing costs him more than he is willing to admit.

Draax
Thursday July 10th, 2003 7:26:28 PM

Draax takes the potion back from Feng and puts it back in his pack. "Oh yeah, I forgot that you are able to do that."

As he listens Abram, Draax wonders what could have taken away the man's spirit. He glances back toward the buckle and points to it as he addresses his companions. "So what are we to do about that? If it is as evil as it looks we should destroy it or at least remove the darkness radiating from it. I believe the Catacombs can destroy it if that is what we need to do. Anyway we can't just let it stay there and have some kid pick it up." Draax start move back toward it and then stops. "I am a little hesitant about touching that thing. Do anyone have a way of moving it without touching it or at least see if it is safe to touch it?"

Feng
Thursday July 10th, 2003 9:30:30 PM

Feng looks down at the buckler. "It is an evil thing. Perhaps we can bless it or dispel the evil. We have to do something. Leaving it here is not an option."

Rond
Thursday July 10th, 2003 10:46:41 PM

Listening to Abram Rond comments, "It was a thing of evil long before it showed up here. We are too happy to help and dispatch it as quickly as we can."

Commenting to Draax:

"I wonder if the Catacombs staff has any kind of evil object disposal kit, or something."

Tratain
Thursday July 10th, 2003 11:28:51 PM

Tratain walks over to Abram and pulls a canvas bundle out of his Haversack and hands Abram his weapons back. He says "These are yours, and no thanks are necessary, Bill tells me you are a good man, a Paladin, a swordbrother to Setanos and I. I have no doubt that you would have come to our aid if the situation was reversed. I must admit I was leery of you when we first met, but I watched you during the party, I saw the look in your eyes. I see now that you are wounded, not physically, somehow worse. I do not know what happened to scar you so, or if I am able to help cure what ails you, but with Domi's aid I will try." Tratain then takes his holy symbol from about his neck and offers it to Abrams saying "I also had a crisis of Faith once, this was the holy symbol I took up when I felt things were at thier worste, I believe that Domi helped cure me then, I believe he will help cure you now."

Tratain will then detect evil to see if the shield itself radiatets evil, even if it doesn't detect as evil, Tratain will pull a Blanket out of his Haversack and Wrap the shield in it, being careful to not touch it with bare hands.

Arien
Friday July 11th, 2003 2:24:09 AM

"Interesting," Arien says as he considers the facts. After a moment of consideration Arien casts an extended Mage Armor on himself and says, "Well it appears as if someone doesn't want us to make contact with Marcus, which frankly doesn't surprise me as that seems to happen fairly often." Arien grins a moment and follows up with, "Well I hope they are tougher than that barbazu."

Setanos
Friday July 11th, 2003 7:33:09 AM

"Ha! Nice work all around that was.

When the buckler comes up Setanos says "Aye, its a thing of evil thats to be sure. We could always try to smash it. The tactic worked well against that beast of darkness.

After Tratains words to Abram, and the offering of the symbol, he says "Take it mate, its a good thing for you to have it."

Renik  d20+10=26 d20+2=19
Friday July 11th, 2003 4:43:41 PM

The rogue looks at Arien with a raised eyebrow and a broad grin. "You want them tougher than that thing? Well I don't. If we round the next bend and get set upon by a group of seven stone weaklings wielding fluffy pillows and harsh language I'll be happy as a pig in the proverbial."

Renik watches closely as Tratain wraps up the buckler and stashes it away, keeping an eye out for any possible change or influence it might exert. Dark magic is best dealt with warily (Spot 26, Sense Motive 19). "Sensible precautions, my friend. The Catacombs is the best place for that thing. They will be able to remove the dark magics or destroy it."

To Abram he says "Two days travel you say? Then let's get moving. Whether or not it was our employer that contacted you, we'll find out nothing further standing here."

And pausing only to hunt for the arrow that skipped off the creature's force shield, Renik prepares to set off.

Another arrival - Dm Ian
Friday July 11th, 2003 5:55:11 PM

Activating his paladin's senses, Tratain determines that the buckler itself is not evil, but whatever aura or enchantment on it surely is. He wraps the buckler up in his blanket, and places it in his Haversack.

Returning to the party, Tratain hands weapons over to Abram, who accepts them with an almost uncaring shrug. However, he tries to refuse the holy symbol offer.

"I had one such once... I'm not worthy of carrying such a thing now."

He straightens, and unties his horse as Renik returns with the broken remains if the arrow bounced out into the nearby trees during the fight.

"This road will take us about halfway. Shall we set off?"

Even as this is said, the sound of a pair of hooves coming up the road towards the Hamlet begins to be audible. The animal is apparently moving at a light trot, and quite soon is visible around the bend north of the party, some two hundred feet away.

Inimicus (Pegasus)
Friday July 11th, 2003 6:26:23 PM

As the hooved beats across the ground foreshadowed, the magnificent visage of a pure white steed is soon seen. Towering above normal horses, it's billowing soft feathered wings give away it's identity as a Pegasus. It draws ever closer at a brisk trot, it's brilliant white feathery mane bouncing along as it does. Strangely this Pegasus seemed to have sustained some sort of injury. A old wide scar was slashed in place of it's left eye, now healed.

Now a figure is easily seen upon the broad creature, a male of seemingly average size. A fine shirt of chain covers his torso and a large shield clangs slightly, slung over the horn of the exoticly made saddle. The man has light brown hair, green eyes, and a wide, natural smile. A soft grey wool cloak embroidered with flower and vine symbols flows out from behind his shoulders as the Mount carries him down the road, and the intricate holy symbol of Flower, the White Dove, just spread for flight.

Friday July 11th, 2003 6:30:10 PM

"Ho there! Glad I caught up with you!", calls the rider, across the intervening distance. He flicks his reins gently, and his mount comes to a stop about a hundred feet away.

"May I approach in peace, and speak with you?"

Renik
Saturday July 12th, 2003 4:06:54 AM

The rogue's eyes open wide in surprise at the sight of such a magnificent beast.

"Approach, by all means sir. I would love to hear the tale of how you aquired such an amazing steed. If you come in peace you have nothing to fear from us." he calls. Though he is keen to set off this stranger and his winged steed have piqued his curiosity.

As the man approaches he whispers to Feng "Do you feel any indication that this fellow is anything other than he appears?" Renik's weapons are sheathed, and his body language is welcoming, but nonetheless after recent events he remains on guard against trickery.

Sunday July 13th, 2003 2:11:54 PM

Tratain is unwilling to give up on Abrams so easily and walks over to the man to continue the conversation glancing at the new arival quickly, he decides he is probably not dangerous so he says to Abrams "What happened to wound you so? I believe you are wrong, you are worthy to carry this symbol, or can be again if you are not afraid. I will not insist that you wear it immedietly or that I can help ease what haunts you today, or even tommorw or a month from now. Just once in a while wear it and reflect upon who you were, what would you have said to someone in your current situation while you were a Paladin? Never try to forget what happened, but you must accept that it was done and move onwards, become stronger so it will not happen again. You will never again be the man you were, become better. And quite being so darn stubborn, its not necessarily a bad thing most of the time to be stubborn, it helps those like us refuse to yield to evil, to fight on when it looks hopeless so that our comrades may live, to help those who are in need that don't think they are worth saving." Tratain looks directly at Abrams while saying the last point and continues "The only one who thinks that you aren't worth helping here is you, and only because you are being stubborn."
Tratain offers his holy symbol again and tries to judge Abrams reactions to his words(Sense Motive 16) to determine if his words are having any effect or if other tactics may be in order.

Inimicus (Pegasus)
Sunday July 13th, 2003 3:07:10 PM

At the rogue's acceptance for a meeting, the large feathered equine is urged forward, clicking it's hooves lightly upon the ground as the beast and the man atop draw closer to the group. Close up, the pair produce a rather impressive image. Measuring 18 hands at the shoulder, the Pegasus props the apparent follower of Flower a good distance. Eventually the mount draws in so that the man atop can more efficiently greet and speak with the party.

Draax
Sunday July 13th, 2003 6:08:53 PM

Draax points his bow towards the sound of the hooves and aims at the rider of the magnificent creature. Although he is in awe at the sight of such a creature, he does not lower his bow until Renik gives the stranger permission to approach. He keeps the bow ready in case the stranger is not what he appears to be. Draax thinks to himself that too many things are not what the appear to be for him to let his guard down until he knows for sure.

Draax moves a little away from his comrades to get a clear shot and to keep from being surprised by a area of effect spell. He lets Renik do the talking and wait for Feng's assurance that the newcomer is not evil before he extends a greeting.

Feng
Sunday July 13th, 2003 10:35:16 PM

Feng doesn't believe the man to be evil, but checks anyway. Feng is a little suprised to see the Pegasus stands slightly taller than Feng's own war horse (17 hands).

"What can we do for you stranger?"

Rond
Monday July 14th, 2003 6:58:38 AM

Hearing the approach of the horse Rond whips out his bow.

Upon first sight of the Pegasus Rond unconsciously lowers his bow as he gets his first sight of the animal. Once he realizes his bow is down he'll look at a Renik for a second and then sheepishly lower his bow. Hearing Renik's encouragement to the stranger Rond feels better about his decision. He's not sure if he could fire his bow on this animal even if he were endangered.

As the Pegasus and the stranger approach, Rond looks over the impressive creature. Hoping not to disturb the talk or the creature. Rond does a slow discreet circle around the two in order to get a look at the Pegasus.

Setanos
Monday July 14th, 2003 7:21:01 AM

"Well, if your goal is to slay foul demons and see mythic beasts, seems this is the party to be with, to be sure."

Setanos waits with his axe lowered in his hands to see what develops between this amazing pair and the party.

A ring, and a proposal -- DM Ian
Monday July 14th, 2003 6:12:26 PM

Abram steps aside with Tratain, lowering his head and speaking somewhat quietly. "I recognize this man from Marcus' organization."

He then looks up at Tratain for a moment, and then replying. "I do not wish to insult you. I remember what it was like to live within the grace of Courage, have it fill your every impulse of confidence and view of the world. I... will think on your words, but my heart is still yet too filled with memory to face atonement for my... "

With that he trails off, and nods to Tratain. He then collects his horse, and tucks his weaponry back into his belt. Tratain gets the impression that Abram is being completely honest, and perhaps lacks the courage to overcome his memories.

Feng finds neither newcomer to be evil.

Then, the newcomer speaks again.

Zahm
Monday July 14th, 2003 6:23:37 PM

"Well met, well met", says the man, sliding gently down from the back of the pegasus. "My name is Zahm, and this, I believe, is for you."

With that, he produces a ring from his belt pouch, and presents it to Rond. Upon quick examination, it is indeed what you would expect from one of Marcus' organization.

"I know of most of you, but I would ask each of your names to confirm, before asking to join you on the road."

Arien
Monday July 14th, 2003 7:41:05 PM

Arien eyes the newcomer a moment before answering him. "I am Arien Silverbow, those that you don't know have joined us recently and you have my assurances that they are most trustworthy." Arien leans back on the flying carpet and regards the man.

Tratain
Monday July 14th, 2003 10:06:50 PM

Tratain says to Abrams "Good, I will leave you be for now with your thoughts, this is a good start, your healing will not be easy, nor will it be quick. We will speak again when you are ready, if I am able to help in any way, please ask."

At that, Tratain lets Abrams be with his thoughts and approaches the Rider. He greets the man and says "My name is Tratain, just recently I have started traveling with the brave fellows, and your name, sir is?"

Feng
Monday July 14th, 2003 11:19:26 PM

The ring means little to Feng. It is true that he met the others in a similar circumstance but he felt that he proved his intentions with action.

"Well Zahm what can we do for you? Surely you didn't travel all this way just to join us on the road."

Inimicus (Elf)
Monday July 14th, 2003 11:30:41 PM

A few moments after the rider removes himself from the mount, the Pegasus lets loose a slight whinny. At first it might appear that the animal itself was shrinking, like some sort of strange optical illusion. After a second or two one could easily watch the transformation slowly taking place, in fact, a voice is almost heard, slightly skewed into that as if coming from an equine, "Actually...we...did..." comes the voice toward Feng. Bones popped and readjusted themselves into place as the Pegasus leaned back onto two legs, it's forward hooves turning slowly into nimble fingers. The long feathery mane turned into a long braid of straight blonde hair. The white coat of fur dissapated and only fair unblemished skin showed through.

Once the transformation is complete a fine looking Elven man is seen where the exquisit Pegasus once was. A belt full of pouches holds up some finely made black pants, and a pair of study traveling boots cover his feet. He also wears a white shirt and grey vest, and a pair of dark colored soft gloves. Several pieces of jewelry adorn his fingers, and a pair of silver bracers cover most of his thin forearms. A tightly woven cloak flows behind him. Most would never even attempt to guess that this man and the Pegasus were once one, but one thing remains the same. A black eyepatch covers his left eye, and the slight slashing scar pokes out from under the covering...the exact same eye that the Pegasus had damaged.

The Elf cracked his neck from side to side and took a deep breath, raising his gloved hands up slightly in triumph, "I live again! Ahahhahah, ahhahah!! Ahhah...hack hack...*cough cough cough*" he bent over slightly attempting to catch his breath inbetween his great coughing fit. The Elf put a hand up as if to say 'just give me one moment' and finally regains his breath, standing up straight, "Ahem...sorry about that. I seem to have some violent allergy to the feathers, ugh. Blasted back is killing me too...I must also apologize for the trickery, but we had to be certain, it's not often my divinations get...er...divinationed on...if you can understand that, and as you well know by now, not everything is as it appears. Reguardless I had reason to feel somewhat paranoid, espeically after what I had just seen. I must say, congradulations on your victory over that foe by the way."

As the Elf moved forward slightly, a keen eye could catch the visage of a fine glass dagger tucked into his belt. A rare item indeed, it could be known that only one type of society had need for glass daggers. Having finally stopped next to the Rider, he pats Zahm on the shoulder lightly, "As he stated, this is my good friend Zham, and I am Inimicus. We have the same employer, though our jobs are quite different. I realize that you're all on the move, if you'd like, I can tell you my story while we travel. It should be quite the interesting tale to tell, and I think it will explain quite well exactly why we do in fact wish to join you."

Draax
Tuesday July 15th, 2003 12:05:18 AM

Draax shakes his head as he witnesses the transformation. "This has been a strange day." The half-elf cracks a small smile and says, "Andraaxius, but my friends call me Draax."

Rond
Tuesday July 15th, 2003 6:50:58 AM

Having examined the ring and not found any problems. Rond hands the ring over to Renik. "I am Rond and you are welcome here."

As the transformation occurs Rond's jaw drops. Once it is known that there is an elf under those strange wings, Rond lightly mutters to himself about not being able to see a true Pegasus.

Speaking to Iminicus, "We understand completely what can happen with doubt. It is the nature of who and what we work for and with."

Setanos  d20+11=19
Tuesday July 15th, 2003 7:44:42 AM

"Zham, I'm Setanos, Setanos DeBaku. Well met!" With that he extends a hand to Zham.

Setanos's eyes go wide as he watches the transformation, pondering its source.

To Inimicus he says "As you may have heard, I'm Setanos." He extends a hand to Inimicus as well. "Fine bit of magic there mate, most impresive. I'd no mind a good story as we travel."

OOC: Spell craft check, to tell anything I can about the shifting of the Elf.

Renik
Tuesday July 15th, 2003 5:03:48 PM

The rogue watches Zahm approach, but his eyes are continually drawn back to the magnificent beast behind him. He had heard about pegasi of course, but to actually see one in the flesh...

He breaks out of his reverie as Zahm introduces himself. "Dacour. Renik Dacour." nods the dapper rogue, extending his hand with a small smile. He examines the ring handed him by Rond, and finding nothing wrong hands it back to its owner. "Well met sir. We were..."

He stops dead as the pegasus begins to twist, morph and transform before his eyes. His first reaction is to suspect a trap, and his hands flash to the twin blades scabbarded on his back. His warning cry to his comrades dies on his lips, however, as the laughing, hacking Inimicus stands revealed.

He looks askance at Feng as this elven enigma introduces himself, but feels compelled to trust his own instincts. This Inimicus looks like he might be a lot of fun to have along, with tricks like that up his sleeve... He supresses a grin and says;

"Renik Dacour. A pleasure to meet you Inimicus. As I was about to tell your friend here, we were ready to move out, so if you wish to fill us in as we travel that would be ideal. So, that was your scrying portal. Well, that's a relief. We were concerned whoever sent that... thing was keeping an eye on their handiwork. I don't suppose either of you know why that thing was sent do you?"

His eyes flick over to the taciturn Abram, and he cannot help but feel there is something the fallen hero is keeping from them.

"Anyway, you were going to explain how you came to be here, and seeking our company. Please, go ahead."

Inimicus (Elf)
Tuesday July 15th, 2003 6:04:07 PM

Inimicus shakes hands in greeting and nods as Renik speaks of being ready to head out. He turns his head to look at Zham and says, "Heh, is it my turn to ride you yet? No? Geeze, it's like my life revolves around drawing the short straw (as in hay straw). If I'm gonna stay in the conversation while we're traveling, you may be the first male ever to ride a Unicorn, Zham. Just let my back get stretched out a bit." Inimicus adds with a crack of his back.

Looking over the rest of the party, he feels its time to get on with his story, "Some of this story may come as bad news, and some of good news. As I said before, we have the same employer. I joined on sometime ago for my Divination abilities, and Zham joined me sometime after. I specialize in watching and listening to activities and conversations, making sure everything goes as planned for those like us...but lately something went wrong. As I looked upon others with my magic, someone or something was in fact, looking at me. Needless to say, as I said before, my Divinations were being Dinvinated upon. I could feel the presence of evil and this distressed me, for now my place of work and those that worked with me were in danger. So I had to pack up shop and get out as quickly as possible. Lately though, I managed to get one last Divination out, this time I added a new component to attempt to magnify it's power. What I saw, I saw through the eyes of another creature, a creature of great evil and hatred I would imagine, and I saw you all. I was not alone though, there was...another presense...another struggling with myself for domination of the visions, eventually it won and I lost my view, so we came this way as quickly as possible...get me so far?" he asks toward his new traveling companions.

A day of talking and travel - Dm Ian  d20+4=22 d20+6=10 d20+3=11 d20+3=20 d20+5=7
Tuesday July 15th, 2003 6:05:05 PM

Thus met, your conversation continues as the group passes down the well-maintained road leading out of the Hamlet, and towards the nearby coast. The travel is easy, and no one else is seen on the road.

Thinking about the transformation, Setanos isn't sure whether it is a spell or innate ability, and narrows it down to either a polymorph or shapechange effect. An illusion is perhaps less likely due to the one riding the other.

Abram rides quietly through the day, not answering with much more than a few words when prompted. From time to time Tratain finds Abram looking at the holy symbol, but he looks away quickly each time Tratain notices.

As the party finishes their conversation and travel for the day, and finds a defensible camp for the evening, Renik and Tratain see a scrying sensor wink into existance thirty or so feet above the camp. Then, as suddenly as it came, it flickers out of existence.

(If the party chooses to camp, please post an order of watch for the night. Otherwise, if the group could discuss a standard order via email and let me know, that would be great.)

Tratain  d4+1=2 d4+1=3
Tuesday July 15th, 2003 8:39:43 PM

Tratain is pleased that Abrams seems to be at least thinking upon his words. Upon seeing the scrying sensor he says "We are being watched, there was a scrying sensor above our camp a moment ago. Should we keep moving? or shall we rest here anyway, it seems our unseen enemy is able to locate us anywhere we go." He says to Zahm and Inimicus, "Do you have any idea what or who our enemy is using as the focus of thier Divination spells, tomorrow I can shield up to three people or objects from divination spells if needed, but there are far to many of us for me to shield us all."

When Renik makes the decision to finally camp he tells him, "I would like to sleep first, I require very little rest only about 2 hours, after i get some sleep I will stand watch for the rest of the night with whomever else you designate."

Tratain sleeps with his sword drawn and keeps it at hand for the rest of the night and wears the goggles of night given to him by Bill. Also after getting his rest he will cast Bull's Strength and Endurence upon himself incase they should be attacked this night.

Draax
Tuesday July 15th, 2003 11:25:27 PM

Draax says, "I say we might as well camp here since this unknown observer seems to be able to locate us. The camp is defensible and we know that he knows where we are. If he does decide to test us I like the idea of choosing our battle field. I volunteer for first watch also, if needed. Can anyone put a ward around our campsite?"

Draax feeds his horse and then brushes him down as he listens to the others.

Inimicus (Elf)  d20=4
Wednesday July 16th, 2003 4:13:17 AM

Inimicus gets a distasteful look upon his face when Tratain mentions that a scry sensor had been watching them, "Damned thing. Ain't that something annoying. One day we'll find out who's behind that, and I'll whack them in the head with my blasted cauldron!" With a sigh Inimicus looks about the camp and decides that it is as good a place as any to rest for the night. He doesn't bother getting out a bedroll or the like, since he already knows how he'll be sleeping for tonight.

"Unfortunately I haven't a clue as of yet who is the becon for the scrying attempts, nor do I have any magic to serve as an alarm. I'm afraid my magic is very focused, but potent in it's field. I specialize in creating disarray among the enemy. Confusion, domination, the ability to bluff, these are my strengths...of course along with this ever changing form. I'll require a full nights rest myself. If there's nothing else, goodnight to you folk, it's going to be good getting a nights rest after the long ride." the Elven man says as he attempts to pick out his place to sleep for the night.

Stopping in place once the party finally decides to sleep for the night, Inimicus puts his hands in the air as if conducting a musical band, "And a one, and a two..." he says, trailing off as his skin begins to take on a dark brown tint. His arms elongate into gnarled, root-like appendages, and his body widens considerably, turning into a giant heap of vegetation. After a moment he is total transformed into the carnivorous Shambling Mound. Blending into the rest of the foliage (Hide roll 4 plus a possible 12 if it's a forested area, which I'm assuming it is), he simply plops down and goes to sleep.

Renik  d20+25=39
Wednesday July 16th, 2003 4:36:00 AM

Renik listens to Inimicus' tale with interest. It seems they have attracted a powerful adversary. "This is indeed a mystery. Who could this enemy be? And is it he who competes with a divination, or another still? We need to locate our employer... or perhaps we are only bringing danger to him." He ponders this problem in silence.

When they reach the campsite he rogue looks over the area and decides it is as good a site as any. And Rond and Tratain are correct; whoever this invisible enemy may be, be seems capable of tracking their every movement. And at least here they can set up defences and plan for an attack. He spends some time locating the best positions for lookouts to hide.

"OK, let's camp here. Let's take three shifts on watch, three on lookout at any one time, seeing as the risk of an attack is pretty high.

Watch 1: Draax, Setanos and myself.
Watch 2: Tratain, Feng and Rond.
Watch 3: Tratain, Zahm and Abram.

That should allow the majority of the spellcasters plenty of time to recuperate.

Spellcasters, if you have any spells to hide us, ward or protect us, assist the lookouts or provide early warning of attack, by all means cast them. Perhaps you could create an illusion of a false set of sleepers around the campfire that might help, then we can hide the rest of you. Anyway, you're the magicians; surprise me! (Inimicus immediately succeeds in this regard, turning into a huge mound of vegetation).

Lookouts, we need to keep ourselves hidden, and stay alert. Remember, a foe might very well teleport into the center of camp, our approach invisible. Keep your eyes and ears peeled. And watch out for that scrying portal; it could signal an imminent attack.

The rogue tries to locate high ground (a tree if possible) for his watch, and hides himself expertly (Hide 39). Then, throughout his watch he scans the surrounding area carefully, listening for any telltale sounds of trouble approaching (Spot checks at +10, Listen checks at +10).

Turning to the party, he says:
"On the morn, I'll be refreshing my mind for casting. I know spells to make ya stronger, nimbler and hardier, an I can give you a bit of magic armor if you have none, and enhance your weapon magically a bit. Does anyone have any particular requests?"

Stalking the Night Fantastic - DM Ian  d20+9=12 d20+9=21
Wednesday July 16th, 2003 6:37:22 PM

Throughout the night, each of you awakens, sure you are being watched, the sensation uncomfortable and hot on your skin. However, the guards hear nothing, and morning comes early and bright.

As camp is being broken down, and preparations made to travel again, Rond is the first to discover tracks at a discrete distance around the camp.

Zahm is nothing but pleasant and smiling in the morning, waking a little early to cook a breakfast of eggs, bacon, and thin, flat biscuits with honey for the group.

Two human-sized, lightly loaded individuals circled the camp several times each, about fifty or sixty feet out. They crouched at several points behind a few bushes, and at one point set up a line of arrows each behind a tree. The line of five distinctive holes left by broadhead shafts in each location tell of an ambush prepared, and abandoned for some reason.

As the group strikes out, Abram speaks again.

"Today we depart from the road and head out to the coast. If we push a little to sunset, we should arrive at the village, where 'M' should await our arrival."

Feng
Wednesday July 16th, 2003 10:54:29 PM

As things get revealed, Feng finds himself liking things less and less. Three strangers have joined the journey. There is a good chance that they are friends but keeping information from them isn't a nice things to do. Especially since whatever is going on has their lives in danger.

Draax
Wednesday July 16th, 2003 10:58:01 PM

"Thanks for the arrows Arien. I am glad that I did not have to use them."

Draax is very disturbed about the tracks that were found and the abandoned ambush that was obviously meant for the group. "I was beginning to accept the extra eyes that we have following our every move, but I cannot say that I feel comfortable being spied on and threaten by physical threats. I know that we need to get to M, but I would love to attempt to track our voyeurs down and find out why they decided not to carry out their ambush."

Draax lets his frustration show openly on his face as he eat his breakfast and readies his horse for the journey.

[OOC: Congratz Carl, good luck with your new addition.]

Tratain
Thursday July 17th, 2003 12:11:06 AM

In the mourning Tratain prays for his spells back and cuts enough of his silk rope to hold the Symbol of Domi given to him by Bill around his neck to act as his new holy symbol.

Tratain Nods to Abrams, and says to the group "Perhapse we should hurry to the town, I think it is less likely that we will be attacked there. We should be weary though, our enemies thought better of attacking us last night, but i think it likely that they wait in ambush somewhere between here and our destination, we should keep a sharp eye out."

Inimicus (Elf)
Thursday July 17th, 2003 12:44:40 AM

As the morning comes the wide bed of vegetation that is Inimicus rustles slightly from it's spot. Hobbling slightly from the tell-tale effects of morning drowsyness, the Shambling Mound soon begins to crack and morph, the vines and roots retreating back into the girth of it's torso. Even the torso itself goes back to the slim waistline of an Elf. Within a few seconds, Inimicus is back to his Elven form.

He seems happy to see that Zahm has whipped up a delightly breakfast and eagerly partakes. When told the news of an ambush now passed, his delight seems to be smitten slightly, "An ambush come and gone...now that's strange. I'm starting to wonder, perhaps we should put on a 'show' for our watchers. It might be the only way to draw them out...I haven't a clue. Perhaps I could take the form of something vicious and formadable and 'pretend' to do battle with the group. After a bit the group finally 'slays' me and, battered and winded, takes a moment to rest...maybe that would draw our followers to attack."

Inimicus considers his own plan and shakes his head slowly, "Gah, I haven't a clue what I'm talking about. The only thing I can offer for the moment is a Divination if you wish. I can attempt to gain some information about what is going on here, but it would unfortuantely eat away at one of my more powerful spells. I suppose getting to the town is our best bet at the moment, although I would like to think of a way to use the fact that we know we're being watched to our advantage..."

Setanos [Mage Armor]
Thursday July 17th, 2003 10:40:19 AM

Stretching his body to wake it, Setanos rumbles over to enjoy the fine breakfast, marking it as a fine start to a day.

After eating his breakfast and cleaning things up a bit, he goes through his morning routine, performing various exercises over the course of a half hour.

He then settles down with his spell book and memorizes his spells for the day, making a few changes to his normal list. Since no one made any requests, he prepares as best he can for what might occur.

At Tratains suggestion of heading to town, he nods in agreement. "Thats a good a plan as any. I think you got a point, we might be ambushed along the way. We should be ready for that if it comes."

By way of preparing, Setanos casts a spell he has recently memorized, an extended Mage Armor spell.

{AC 20 for next 12 hours}

(OOC: I was recently looking for a ruling that allowed double extended spells myself, and the other Woldian DMs found specific book entries that disallow it. Sorry.-Ian)

After memorizing spells Arien breaks his fast. Afterwards he casts an extended mage armor on himself. When Draax thanks Arien, Arien says, "No problem, and actually I've got another spell to put on those, same one actually, this time it'll just last twice as long."

Renik listens to each of the other party members in turn over breakfast, and examines the tracks found afterwards.

He seems to consider Setanos' offer of a divination, but his attention is captured when Rond suggests the group might be facing the Sons, again.

"Any reason why you might say that, Rond?"

Home by the sea - DM Ian
Thursday July 17th, 2003 6:19:32 PM

The group makes good time through the day, across the sparse woods that lay between the road and the coast. You emerge onto the last rising hill before the sea last in the afternoon, and find the sea breaktaking, all silver and gold.

Abram stops for a few minutes at this point, and just watches out to sea. He mumbles something about being willing to catch up if the party wishes to continue, but otherwise sits captivated for a few minutes, gazing out to the horizon.

When the group gets going again, the travel down the coast goes fairly quickly, and perhaps an hour before dark you come into sight of an indentation in the Bay.

Directly ahead, perhaps a thousand feet, is a series of huts built of piled sandstone on the beach, in a loose cluster that extends right down in the wave, some buildings partially submerged, and some only briefly revealed from time to time by the lapping surf. On the far side of the huts is a small corral filled with animals, and on the near side, eight foot high, slightly angled pine racks laden with drying fish.

Even at this range, you can see fair skinned humanoids moving about the village, wearing colorful blues, lush greens, pure whites and deep greys.

Across the indentation of land, at least two hours walk, is a stone promontory that juts out into the water a considerable distance. It is placed almost with perfect deliberation to relegate the winds that would otherwise rake this cove off of the Bay.

Abram shakes himself out of his funk at the sight of the village, and announces in his inflectionless voice, "Our destination, a sea elven village."

Zahm chuckles, and rubs his hands in response.

Thursday July 17th, 2003 10:49:29 PM

At the mention of the SoD Draax turns to Rond, "I hope not. I can take someone trying to take over the wold, but those fools want to blow it up. We have not heard from them in a while and their hatred for us was pretty strong. So you might be right, I would not be surprised if they poked their heads out of their rats holes again."

Again Draax thanks Arien for the arrows, "The trick with the arrows is great and I had no idea the enchantment could last that long."

When Abram states their destination Draax makes a mental note to not start staring like a tourist. He tries to hide his excitement of seeing the sea elf's village.

Tratain
Thursday July 17th, 2003 11:12:47 PM

Tratain says to Abrams trying to draw the man into the camaradrie of the group, "This is very impressive, I have never seen anything like this before. Is this your first visit here? or have you been here before? The sea is captivating, though i have never been one for sailing."

To the group he says "We are almost at our destination, I suggest until we are actually there we be on guard, this is the last chance our enemy will have to attack unless he wishes to fight a village of sea elves with us."

OOC: Are the Son's of Dread Commonly known? If not I would ask about them as well as i know nothing about them

Inimicus (Elf)
Friday July 18th, 2003 3:07:46 AM

"I suppose this means we made it..." says Inimicus as he gazes out toward the establishment of the Sea Elves. It felt good to be there, it almost felt...safe. Perhaps there he could put some of his paranoia to rest, at least for a small amount of time.

Inimicus chortles lightly at his companions eagerness to partake in the culinary arts of the Sea Elves, "Maybe, just maybe. A facinating place to say the least, I'd best keep my eyes open for any rare baubles that I can use in my craft. My own ingrediants are wavering, I need to restock to be prepared for what may lie ahead for us."

Rond
Friday July 18th, 2003 4:29:45 AM

Responding to Renik, "They seem to be a group of wizards that continually muddle in things that they shouldn't. That's how this group originally came togehter was because they were tinkering around in graves around the Hamlett, and we were called into investigate. That's why I thought of them was because we encountered them in this area. They were also involved with Marteaus somehow, but my memories are somewhat clouded on that. I know that what they did was not good."

Having lost the designation of leader, Rond is happy to do scouting ahead for the group and watching for any tracks of the group of footprints.

Hearing the comments about sea elves, Rond hopes that it wasn't anyone from this village that might have spotted the group already.

Setanos {Mage Armor}
Friday July 18th, 2003 10:15:52 AM

"Ahh..I've not seen a sea elven village before, should be interesting. Although they are a bit thin, some how I dont think the food will be the hearty fare I'm used too."

With a grin on his face, Setanos continues along with the group, whistling an old walking tune.

Arien (Extended Mage Armor)

Caution, and a warm welcome - DM Ian  d20+8=17
Friday July 18th, 2003 7:16:59 PM

Rond slips over the hillside quietly, moving from cover to cover, crouching behind the sparse pieces of vegetation that have withstood the battering of the sea and wind.

There are a single set of human sized tracks leading away from the village on the far side, that lead out towards the surf perhaps five hundred feet away from the last hut. Rond can't quite get close enough to examine them for age without being seen.

The village itself appears to hold about forty sea elves going about the daily tasks one would expect. Some are drying fish, some are pressing various things into oil, a few tend to some chickens and turtles in the animal pens, and several adults sit singing with children. It appears to be the very image of domestic tranquility.

After reporting his findings, the group makes their way down the hill towards the village, and almost immediately a happy shout goes up from the elves working the fish drying racks facing you.

"The guests have come! Call for Usshas and ready the feast!"

As the group approaches, several of the elves are beginning to light fires, and two move into the waves gracefully.

At this point, the group is about two hundred feet from the near edge of the village. There are no visible threats.

Feng
Sunday July 20th, 2003 12:42:50 AM

Seated upon his horse, Feng is a little nervous about a village full of sea elves. Generally elves don't like his orc half. Unfortunately that leaves his human half in the same boat. Still he was glad their time on the road was at an end, even if it was only for a little while.

Draax
Sunday July 20th, 2003 4:27:27 PM

Draax gets a nervous feeling in his stomach as he hears the joyous shout. From his experiences, there are only two types of strangers that are happy to see you, those that are grateful for something that you have done for them and those that are grateful for something that they expect you to do for them. Draax hopes it is the former, but he suspects the latter.

Draax berates himself for always having a suspicious nature. He tells himself that they were just waiting for us to arrive before they start eating. The happiness is probably because now they can eat since we have arrived. Draax smiles at his overactive imagination, but also notes that the uneasy feeling has not left him.

He keeps his eyes roaming for any visible threats and keeps his bow sitting across his saddle just to be on the safe side.

Rond
Monday July 21st, 2003 4:56:20 AM

Rond notes the exuberance in which the sea elves greet the group. He wonders whether that might be Marcus's doing or not. He's not been a very happy individual as of late, so this happy village thing seems to be a bit out of context for him.

Furthering his musing Rond again wonders whether maybe the ambush was actaully a support group from Marcus. Whether it was some of the elves come to watch over the group. Rond tells himself that he'll have to check with Marcus and see whether he did that or not.

Setanos {extended Mage Armor}
Monday July 21st, 2003 9:11:49 AM

The shouts of joy are a welcome sound in Setanos's ear. He returns the shout with a bellowful hello of his own, and then turns to his companions with a grin.

"Well a feast sounds about great right now eh?"

A warm welcome - DM Ian
Monday July 21st, 2003 5:23:23 PM

As the elves move about in preparation of a feast, the waves part to reveal a middle aged sea elf walking towards the shore. He is thin, a little over five and a half feet tall, and wears a soft blue mages robe made out of some kind of oiled silk. He seems well off, however, as the webbing on his left hand is pierced with a series of tiny gold rings, and his belt bears a graceful crystal wand in a sealskin wand sheath.

When he sees the party gathering on the edge of the village, he smiles widely, and alters his course to move towards you.

"My name is Usshas. Please, come in and be welcome. I was asked by my friend Marcus to offer you hospitality here tonight, but certainly no such request would have been required! We have great respect for the defenders of the Sentinel!"

At this, the elves all stop, and come over to congratulate and thank the various members of the group.

"Its perhaps an hour to sunset, I think, so please feel free to make yourselves at home. The food will be ready soon, and a few surface huts have been prepared for your use tonight."

In a lower tone, he steps forward and says, "Marcus went to perform a reconnaisance of the wreck site this morning, and said he would be back tomorrow morning by boat. Would you accept our hospitality until then?"

Even before you can answer, a little elven child runs over to Rond, and looks up with a bright smile.

"Can we have stories? Pleeeaaase?"

The child's mother catches up about this point, and corrals the child, smiling at Rond apologetically.

Tratain
Monday July 21st, 2003 7:04:28 PM

Tratain says to the others "It looks like we will be spending the night here, while we are somewhat safe would either Setanos or Arien like to take a look at the shield we recovered off of the Devil, we should check and see if it is magical."

If Setanos or Arien wants to Identify the Buckler Tratain takes it out of his Haversack and hands it to them, still wrapped in the Blanket if the Evil magical Aura is not yet gone from it.

Inimicus (Elf)
Monday July 21st, 2003 8:25:51 PM

Inimicus smiles the whole time, greeting most of the villagers as they meet. As soon as Tratain speaks of the buckler Inimicus bolts over toward him and gets real close, drumming his fingers together with a wide grin on his face, "Did you say...a shield gotten from the hands of a Devil? Veeeeeeery interesting. I would imagine it may be teeming with evil...of course that's just what I would assume. You see along with the divinations I provided I also specialized in dealing with such objects. It might be to the advantage of the group if you allow me to examine it, I may be able to turn it onto our side. My...arts cater to such things." says Inimicus confidently, eyes narrowed in interest.

He laughs as the child pleads to Rond for a story. He lets one of the others accept the elf's hospitality and lets himself be led to the feast.

Though unassociated with the group at the time of the Sentinel's Head adventure, Renik has heard all about it. He smiles and laughs as the elves make them welcome, reflecting upon just how attractive elven maidens can be.

He bows to Usshas. "You honour us with your welcome, sir. It would be churlish indeed to refuse such hospitality."

"Inimicus, if you feel you can be of assistance with the buckler then by all means make the attempt. But be careful! That thing had an air of evil about it that struck me as dangerous."

Renik will keep a close eye on Inimicus if he does make the attempt, watching out for any percieved change in the elf's demenour as he deals with the object (Sense Motive 22).

Rond

Rond's eyes light up as the child asks about stories. As the child's mother quickly moves to intercept her, so changes Rond's mood a little bit. Bill would have been the one to tell the stories. Looking down at the mother and child Rond softly says, "Maybe in a little while".

Responding to Usshas comments, "I can sleep outside if you need me to. I realize that your huts may not work very well for someone like me." Rond smiles as the finishes his statement.

Seeing the group relax at the elves words, Setanos too relaxes. He stores his shield in his pack, though he keeps his axe handy in case of trouble.

At the mention of the shield, Setanos walks over to Tratain and Inimicus. "I've no spells or skill along those lines, but while Inimicus studies the shield, I'll keep an eye on him, just to be safe."

Arien (Extended Mage Armor)

As the preparations ramp up - DM Ian
Tuesday July 22nd, 2003 8:03:50 PM

The afternoon winds away in relative comfort, with the various elves taking short breaks from their tasks to come meet the party members. For the most part, the party is left to care for mounts, eat lightly at the presented foods, stow their gear in the shorebound huts, and relax on the beach.

As night begins to fall, and additional sea elves come up out of the waves to join in the meal, a large fire is built in the center of the camp.

Vahm winks to Inimicus before diving into the food preparations, happy and chattering to any who will listen.

Tratain unpacks the buckler to find it without the blackish aura it had before. He and Inimicus do some testing, and find it neither evil, nor magical, but they do find it has a Catacombs smithy mark on the inside rim.

Abram walks the beach for a while, and rounds to walk to Feng. Without any prelude, he asks, "How did you deal with the madness that came after the death?"

Draax
Tuesday July 22nd, 2003 11:19:14 PM

Draax sits and enjoys the meal and the company. He tries to listen to everyone at the same time and takes mental notes of the sea elves activities and mannerism. He thinks to himself that someday he might have to impersonate one and he should learn all he can while he has a chance.

Tratain
Tuesday July 22nd, 2003 11:54:03 PM

Tratain says to the others after things have quieted down some after the meal "Do you think there is a way to find out who the buckler was sold to from the catacombs as it bears thier mark, they do alot of business so I doubt they will be able to tell us where a single buckler came from but it might do us well to inquire. It was the only item that did not disapear with the Devil so I am assuming that it aquired the item here and not in its home plane. Also I think someone would have had to supply it with all of those magical enhancements it had, I do not believe those enchantments to be normal to those creatures."

Tratain gets his two hours of sleep early and then watches over the village for the rest of the night, keeping alert for scrying sensors or anything else out of the ordinary.

Renik  d20+10=29
Wednesday July 23rd, 2003 5:17:22 AM

Overhearing Abram's question to Feng (Listen 29), everything suddenly becomes clear to the rogue. Abram, a former paladin, was no doubt afflicted by the madness that swept clerics Woldwide in the aftermath of Domi's death. There were atrocities comitted in that time, deeds that once-devout followers of an honourable god would have terrible difficulties in forgiving themselves for once the madness passed. Abram, it seems, was one such afflicted. The rogue feels a stab of pity for the man, to have been so close to his god, and to have fallen so far. It makes the hollow shell of a man he sees before him finally understandable.

And the very real question is raised: is he forever damned for his actions during that time? In that crazed night true horrors were comitted, the darkest depths of the human soul exposed. Who can say just how far Abram fell?

He turns his head, leaving Feng and Abram their privacy, his cheerful mood momentarily punctured.

Not realizing his notoriety for the Sentinal head. Rond does his best to answer questions about that very grim time. Rond decides to help where he can, lifting pots, moving small children, setting tables. Whatever he can do to assist the village with his size and strength. Happy that he doesn't have to worry about leadership, Rond just keeps his ears open to see if he picks anything up within the sea elf ranks.

"Can ya make anything of it Inimicus" say Setanos as Tratain unpacks the sheild.

He then goes to enjoy the early food. After eating a bit he goes about tending to his items, making minor repairs and generally caring for his gear.

Feasting, and storytelling - DM Ian  d20+5=25
Wednesday July 23rd, 2003 6:02:01 PM

Usshas sits down with the group as the food begins to be served. The meal itself is a curious mix of raw fish with various herbal pastes, a roast suckling pig, tender undersea vegetables, fruit from the nearby wooded area beyond the shore, and a collection dishes of seared prawns and crab. Once the food is distributed, Usshas begins to speak.

"Marcus came here some weeks ago. He had said that something had changed in Plateau City, but wasn't forthcoming on details. He seemed content to just fish and take long walks, in fact, but it was obvious to see that for each hour of relaxation and rest, he grew more eager to do something substantial with his time."

"Some of our younger men wanders the sea floor up and down the coast, and after a storm last season, found a wrecked ship out near the promontory. We try to help out as we can in situations like that, but we are a wandering people, and had gone to visit another pod during the storm. Such weather is always easier to ride out further out to sea."

"So, we told Marcus of the wreck, never thinking he would bring such fine heroes to help in its exploration, and possible raising. For this we are glad."

At about this point, the curious young elven child comes bouncing back up to the section of beach Rond and Renik are sitting on, with a beaming smile. Although the mother isn't far behind again, the child gets a chirping comment out before being caught and lifted into the mothers arms.

"Story?"

From a position further out of the limelight, Feng and Abram watch the sixty some sea elves make merry and eat with the party. It is somewhat like the swirl and bustle of the party at the Hamlet, but the more Feng listens to conversations, and then watches the same elves that were talking act slightly differently when they move away from the conversations, the more something feels wrong.

Feng's senses reveal nothing evil in the area, but something about the scene just doesn't quite sit right with him. Hmm... maybe its just the way elves have of dealing with the short lived races...

Tratain
Wednesday July 23rd, 2003 11:07:06 PM

Tratain samples some of the food and drink so as to not seem rude to his sea elven hosts, but he doesn't really need to eat because of his ring. Tratain retires early to get the little rest he needs and then returns to the feaste if it is still going or silently keeps watch over the village for the rest of the night.

Feng
Thursday July 24th, 2003 1:26:38 AM

[To Abram]
Feng stares off at the horizon trying to form the words. "It was tough. Especially when others started dying as well. I don't think I could compare my struggle with anybody elses. I never wanted to be hampered by one gods preferrance for doing things so I try to devote my attention to them all. When he died I tried to draw strength from the others. But mainly I concentrated on what I hold to be true. The strength the gods give does not make us who we are. They help for reasons that are their own. I would make the same descisions with or without their help."

[At the party]
Feng stands back and watches. Something doesn't sit right and it won't go away. For one thing if Marcus wanted to meet them here, why did he leave? Feng wonders if the sea elves definition of good and evil is different from his. That could remove the presence of evil altogether.

Rond
Thursday July 24th, 2003 6:32:28 AM

Looking at the child that is asking, "This is up to your mother here. I am not much of story teller, myself. But I could answering questions about that time if your mother would allow it. A lot of grown up things happened during that time, and you mother may want to talk to you about some of these thing alone, and in her own way."

When not engaged with any of the other children, Rond will continue feasting and lightly drinking with the others.

Setanos
Thursday July 24th, 2003 8:38:46 AM

After eating the fine foods presented here, Setanos listens to the words of Usshas. The pig tastes especially good, and he chuckles slightly at his earlier comment about hearty food.

When Usshas is done speaking, Setanos responds. "So a sunken ship? Have your people been able to make anything of it? And Marcus said explorin and raisin? Sounds like an adventure ta be sure."

To the group he says "Well..I've no spells for underwater traveling. Does anyone?"

He continues to enjoy the fine food and drink.

Renik  d20+12=28 d20+4=11 d20+2=17
Thursday July 24th, 2003 2:07:01 PM

The rogue accepts the elves' hospitality with gratitude, and laughs and chats lightheartedly with his hosts.

But Usshas' words disturb him for some reason. Though he shows no trace of his disquiet (Bluff 28). His mind feverishly turns over the facts and finds something fundemental missing. Something just doesn't add up... Something has changed in Plateau City that has caused Marcus to flee to this remote village. What could that be? A political shift of some sort? Has Marcus fallen from favour with the City's elite?

And if he is in exile, why would he call upon the Hamleteers to investigate a simple shipwreck? Surely they are employees of the Plateau City Secret Service, not Marcus himself? Why would he call upon them to investigate so trivial-seeming an event?

The more he thinks on it the more he becomes certain they are only being told half the story. When was the last time three other of Marcus' followers joined them on a mission? And what part do the scrying portals and the attack on Abram play in all of this? He becomes certain that all is not as it appears. Not a sense of danger, exactly, but a definite sense of unease.

He continues his cheerful conversation with the village headman, but behind his light banter there is a very definite agenda; he attempts to gather any snippet of information, any missing fragment of intelligence that will allow him to piece together this enigma.

He tries to find out the following over the course of the meal, all without arousing undue suspicion (Gather Info 11). He slips in the questions between tall tales and entertaining anecdotes, hoping by his friendly demeanour to gain as much insight as possible into the events surrounding their arrival.

How does Usshas know Marcus? What is their relationship?
Why might Marcus choose this location to rest up? Did Usshas have any hint of what might have been behind his departure from Plateau City?
What more can the headman tell them of the wreck?
Did he suspect that Marcus might have thought there was more to this matter than just a simple shipwreck?

During their discussion Renik keeps a close eye on the elf's body language and attitude, trying to discern if the village leader is keeping anything from him (Sense Motive 17).

Inimicus (Elf)  d20+16=20 d20+8=18
Thursday July 24th, 2003 3:16:11 PM

Inimicus looks over the buckler for a moment, over, under, and on its sides. It now appears to be a plain old buckler, perhaps all of the enchantments had worn out? Suddenly he drops to the ground and begins rolling around with the buckler in his arms, apparently wrestling with it. After a moment he gets back up as if nothing had happened. Scratching his head he takes a good look at the Catacombs symbol, "Bleh, dang thing appears to be a typical shield now, that's strange. Tracking where it came from would be undescribably hard since the creature could have simply killed and pilfured it from someone. However...my divinations do not allow me to use items as focus' for scrying attempts, but perhaps yours do. We could find out who was the original owner of this buckler by using it as a scrying focus, could we not?"

During the course of the meal, Inimicus is more then happy to tell stories as he "remembers" them, since his fortay was based around watching the actions of others. Of course stories by themselves were a bit too plain, so he decided to spice them up as best he could (Bluff 20).

He can't help but wonder the exact same thing that must have been going through the heads of many of his companions, what exactly was going on here? It seemed all too convinient for M to leave just as they got there. Having worked for him for awhile, Inimicus certainly didn't doubt M, but he did wonder the true reason behind him not being there. Could the Elves possibly have something to do with it? Using his...strange charm he attempts to gain any answers he can (Gather information 18).

Still, with all these questions he enjoys the meal quite honestly. A good meal Elven meal always beat out stale rations and tavern food, "Hope you were paying attention Zahm. I expect to see this next time we're out traveling...that is of course if we happen to camp next to a shore...".

When Senatos asks if anyone has anything for underwater traveling the Elven Witch nods, "Indeed, but again, it can only benefit myself I'm afraid. I should however take this time to explain something to you, and to the group as a whole. One of the main services I can provide toward the group comes not in the way of my own spells, but rather, in the way of making your spells much more effective. You see, I have researched a spell that can effectively heighten a spell beyond it's normal capacity. Spells like your armor, the ability to enchance strength and dexterity, even the blessings one can bestow on weapons. If you wish to make use of this, simply let me know."

Shadows around the campfire - Dm Ian  d20+12=15
Thursday July 24th, 2003 7:21:17 PM

Abram listens to Feng's answer, and just sits for a time, gazing out to sea. When he finally speaks again, his monotone voice is wetted with the sound of tears and sadness.

"Think of it. Courage died. The unending ability to pick everything up and soldier on,... it fell and died. And the streets... do you remember what happened in those streets during the madness? Were you there?"

Closer to the fire, the conversation continues for a short time on various topics, before an elven lady rises to her feet, and begins to sing. It is a nearly wordless song, with the few lyric stretched over a mourning melody. It occurs to several of you after a few moments that perhaps this is music designed to be heard underwater, where the waves themselves would beat slow time, and the water would carry the song onward. The song itself seems to grieve for the loss of sacred places in the sea, and the need to reconsecrate them wherever possible.

Inimicus and Renik continue to maintain some conversation with Usshas, but Usshas seems more interested in turning talk to the daily life of the village. He speaks of a restful community, where even the sharks that usually plague the coast in this season have been gone for some time.

He does speak of a time a few years before when Marcus came to hide in the village for a time, after he had been wounded badly by an assassin. Usshas seems convinced that after that experience, Marcus considers this a safe place to rest, and the ship little more than an excursion.

"After all", Usshas jokes, "a man like Marcus can't ever just let go. He has to be doing something exciting."

Renik feels the man is a superior conversational fencer, and is likely talking around the topic. All the details the man knows about Marcus are right, but Renik is increasingly convinced only part of the picture is being presented.

The night grows late, and the group is shown to a series of two huts with four beds each. Usshas mentions that his people will be just a short distance away beneath the waves, so please just call if the group needs anything.

"Listen, I don't know what's going on here, but something most definitely doesn't sit right with me. I don't think we are being told everything. Be on your guard tonight. Let's have one other person keeping watch with Tratain. I'll take first watch with Rond, then Abram watch with Tratain, and then Feng you relieve Abram for last watch. Draax also offers to take a place on watch, perhaps to reinforce the first watch. He then also helps search the huts, echoing the suspicion in the rest of the party.

The weather indeed is fairly pleasant. Sometime after midnight an inversion layer of clouds rolls in off the ocean, which surprisingly makes the night warmer than expected.

The watches go quietly, seemingly without incident, until the middle of the third watch, when Tratain smells something foul. Hunting around the edge of the camp, he finds nothing in particular. Feng is the first to discover that the stench is actually coming from Renik, who appears to be sweating out some kind of greenish fluid as he sleeps. Tratain instantly recognizes it as the symptom of a disease called 'The Scab bloodrot'. Oddly, the bloodrot usually takes at least a couple days to get this bad.

Looking over your fitfully sleeping companions, Tratain notices that Draax, Abram, Inimicus, and the paladins are healthy, while Arien and Rond are also infected.

None of the sea elves are visible around the village huts. The early predawn is lit by only the soft sounds of the animals sleeping nearby, and the waves lapping at the shore.

(Renik is down 10 con points, Arien is down 11 con points, and Rond is down 5 con points.)

Setanos
Saturday July 26th, 2003 10:32:47 AM

What ever it is we're up against, its an adventure to be sure, He thinks.

After his watch, he tries to get some sleep.

Tratain [Bull's Strength 21 str; Endurence 19 Con]
Saturday July 26th, 2003 11:31:12 AM

When Tratain Finds Renik, Arien and Rond he wakes the others and suggests that they move the three sick members into the same hut. Tratain tries to remember anything he can about the Disease the others are inflicted with.

Tratain asks that Abrams and maybe another come with him to search the sea elven village to see if it is abandoned now or if the elves are sick also.

Renik (CON 2)
Saturday July 26th, 2003 2:04:05 PM

As his companions move him the rogue wakes, but is terribly weak and barely conscious. He tries to focus on the green fluid oozing from his every pore, and begins to shake in horror as he registers just what is happening to him, and how close to death he must be. It is something of a blessing that his mind, recoiling from the dire situation in which it finds itself, sends the rogue back into a fevered sleep.

Arien (Con 1)
Saturday July 26th, 2003 8:47:00 PM

When in trance Arien felt himself becoming weaker and weaker. Unable to shake the feeling Arien collapses into unconciousness as he weakens.

Inimicus (Elf)
Sunday July 27th, 2003 5:56:12 PM

Having slept most of the night away as a large sandcrab, Inimicus awakens via Tratain. Slowly the form of the crab stretches itself into the lithe form of the Elf and he lets out a long yawn. Rubbing his eyes he glances around and stumbles to take a look over at the diseased, "By Maab's Wings!" he shouts, tripping backwards.

"What in the hells happened here?" he looks over toward Tratain, trying desparately to figure this situation out. Having known quite a few diseases, Inimicus is startled to see this one take over the others so quickly. He begins to prepare himself to take part in his most powerful spell, "Tratain, how is everyone else? And where are the Elves? I can cure them all completely, all in one shot, but I need at least 1 hour to complete the Ritual of Purity. In this ritual no evil, no disease, no sickness can survive, and they will be cleansed. It will be the 1 use of my most powerful spell of the day, but it seems that it is most needed at the moment unless you have a better idea."

Feng
Sunday July 27th, 2003 11:37:49 PM

"I should be able to cure all three of them but we have to find the source of the infection otherwise this may happen again tomarrow. While we have no proof I suspect the feast was responsible. Inimicus please save your spells. We may need them later."

Feng begins his preparations to use his divine gift of disease cleansing. [ooc: all 3 of his remove disease for the week.]

Rond (con 15)
Monday July 28th, 2003 12:24:35 AM

Not quite feeling himself, Rond moves where pointed and quickly falls back to sleep. Remembering the abilities of the group, he hopes someone will be able to help him and any others of the group, out.

Draax
Monday July 28th, 2003 7:47:54 PM

As he notices the illness that has affected some of the group, Draax berates himself for letting his guard down when he knew better. The disappearance of the sea elves also get gets under his skin. While listening to the healers discuss curing the others his turns his attention to Abram.

"Abram, you brought us here, do you have any idea what is going on?"

[OOC: Thanks for filling in Ian.]
