DM Jan Monday August 4th, 2003 8:21:35 PM
It is just another morning in Dirt City. Folk are beginning to go about their business. Shops have been open for about an hour.
At this particular point in time, all of you find yourselves below - walking along the Main Sewer corridor in either direction, but all roughly near the intersection of Main and the Dock Sewer corridor. Those of you who've already been outside will have a little damp clinging to your clothes, having walked through thick early morning fog that has drifted in from the sea. The faint sound of the dock fog horn can still be heard coming down through the air vents, if anyone listens closely enough.
Down the distant east end of the corridor, a dwarf can be seen refilling one of the lamps, and checking others, maintaining the overall slight yellowish, but fairly bright flicker that works for light down here.
All along Main, someone has painted an elaborate forest scene on the curved stone wall of the corridor. It's an amazing trompe d'oeil - with strange creatures peeping out from lush undergrowth, looking as though you could walk straight into it at first glance.
Beneath everyone's feet, below the stone, the muffled sound of rushing water can be heard. There is a slight smell of baked bread, wafting from the direction of the Halfling Quarter to the West, mingling with the ever present scent of sea salt.
Suddenly, there is a cry for help - coming from the Dock Sewer corridor. It's high pitched, human, and sounds desperate.
Theodore Monday August 4th, 2003 11:12:35 PM
Not much is able to distract Theodore from his studies, but the call from the Dock Sewer rouses his attention. The young man glances around to gain his bearings before snapping his book shut, hitching up his too big trousers, and jogging over to the tunnel entrance to see what is amiss.
Thorvald Skyhammer Monday August 4th, 2003 11:57:36 PM
Moving his lumbering frame, with a quickness that belies the big man's size, Thorvald runs toward the stranger's pleas for help. As he nears the source of the commotion, he slows and grasps the hilt of his greatsword, ready to launch into action as he surveys the scene.
Olyn Tuesday August 5th, 2003 1:20:05 AM
hearing the cry for help, and seeing others rushing in the same direction, Olyn mumbles a quick prayer under his breath as he races towards the scene.
Vauhwyt Tuesday August 5th, 2003 10:40:49 AM
Vauhwyt turns to speak with Olyn, but before she can open her mouth, the high-pitched cry rings through the Main.
She looks around and sees her friend, Vorelle! As the people nearby bolt toward the sound (including Olyn), the liontaur rushes over to the cloaked ranger, smiling. "Vorelle! I am so glad to see you! But come, let's run that way! It sounds like a girl is in trouble!" She reaches out to take her friend's hand, hoping to pull her along toward the sound of a woman in distress.
Vorelle Tuesday August 5th, 2003 10:54:28 AM
The sudden cry actually makes Vorelle raise her head and look around her. She hesitates briefly, poised on the balls of her feet, but Vauwyt's urging is unnecessary. She is already on her way. She spares a slight smile for her friend as they head toward the Dock Sewer corridor.
Zayne Tuesday August 5th, 2003 12:38:13 PM
Lost in thought, not paying attention to where he has been walking. He thinks he sees a familiar face, someone that he hasn't seen in years. That thought is pushed to the back of his mind,as he sprints in the direction of the shout. Hoping he can make it in time.
Cade d20=4 Tuesday August 5th, 2003 4:03:25 PM
Hearing the high pitched scream come from the direction of the Docks Sewer, Cade sets off behind the others who obviously are also heading to the source of the cry for help.
While on the run Cade attempts to take note of his surroundings, mainly who is running towards the scene and whom might be running away (Spot of 7=4+3), but with all the confusion and frantic pace of everyone in the area he doubts he will notice anyone in particular.
(Rolled a spot check as I was unsure if one was needed for noting people entering and leaving the area)
rose Tuesday August 5th, 2003 6:14:08 PM
Rose is walking down the corridor to see her dad when suddenly she hears the screams. She also notices several friends running to the scene. She runs as fast as she can, but she's a bit slow. "Vauhwyt, Vorelle wait up!"
DM Jan Wednesday August 6th, 2003 1:51:21 AM
The cry for help sets everyone running toward the Dock sewer corridor.
Theodore and Thorvald arrive at the scene first, closely followed by Olyn, Vauhwyt and Vorelle, and then Zayne, Cade and Rose.
They are greeted by the sight of a small human boy with a shock of white hair. He looks wet through and through, and his movements suggest he is injured.
'My brother!' he cries. 'Please help my brother! He'll drown!'
He points down the length of the Dock Sewer corridor.
Cade's observations reveal nothing particularly suspicious except for the boy. There's no one further down the tunnel. If someone was guilty of mischief - they're either hiding or gone.
Olyn d20+6=19 d20+7=9 d20+7=21 Wednesday August 6th, 2003 3:00:52 AM
hearing what the young lad is saying about his brother still in the water, Olyn, without missing a step, dives right in to the spot where the boy is pointing. eyes open, he searches with all his might to find the lads' brother in hopes he'll be there in time.
<he is praying frantically to Wardd at this time>
swim: 19 spot: 21 (rolled a 9, used my only hero point to reroll)
Vorelle d20+5=16 Wednesday August 6th, 2003 9:51:46 AM
Vorelle begins running down the corridor in the direction the lad is pointing. As she goes, she looks around for a rope or a pole or a plank--anything that might be extended out to a drowning boy to bring him to safety.
(OOC I never know with this kind of thing whether it's a Search or a Spot. Either way, it's a 16.)
Vauhwyt Wednesday August 6th, 2003 9:54:25 AM
Vauhwyt calls out, "Anyone here a healerr?" In her excitement, a trace of her liontaur accent -- rolling Rs -- can be heard in her speech.
She quickly digs out a long rope and ties one end around her waist. Then she holds out the other end.
"If anyone else is going into the water, hold on to this so we can pull you out."
If no one takes the rope, she throws it out accross the water toward the swimming Olyn.
[OOC: hee hee! Kathy and I posted at the same time -- with the same idea!]
Zayne d20=19 Wednesday August 6th, 2003 12:44:18 PM
I am going to try to calm the boy down and find out what happened.(diplomacy of 19)
Thorvald d20+7=22 d20+1=8 Wednesday August 6th, 2003 1:05:20 PM
Quickly grabbing the rope offered by Vauhwyt, Thorvlad loops it tightly around his left hand. Unsure of the water's depth, he leaps in feet first and begins to frantically search for the missing boy.

rose d20+4=5 Wednesday August 6th, 2003 3:49:24 PM
rose finally arrives out of breath from running. seeing that the others are helping the boy in the water she goes over to the other boy, and checks to see if he's alright (heal check 5, nat 1)
rose Wednesday August 6th, 2003 3:50:12 PM
"are you alright? what happened" she asks as she checks the boy out.
Cade d20=8 Wednesday August 6th, 2003 4:19:42 PM
Seeing that others are dealing with the boy who yelled, Cade continues his run to the edge of the water that boy had pointed to.
He scans the water looking for the other boy, ready to yell out to the others who jumped in, where he can be found.
(Was unsure whether it was search or spot... if Search, 8+6 = 14... if Spot, 8+3 = 11)
Theodore Wednesday August 6th, 2003 5:23:53 PM
Theodore stops near the boy, huffing and puffing. Unknowingly, he places a hand on Zayne's shoulder to better steady himself. He quickly realizes what he's done and snatches back his hand with a mumbled apology. Theodore decides to stay with the first boy and ask him what has occured, as the more athletic persons have already passed him in their effort to find the drowning victim.
DM Jan Thursday August 7th, 2003 2:29:25 AM
Olyn, Vorelle, Vauhwyt, Cade and Thorvald rush off to rescue the boy's brother. It's a sprint down the Dock Sewer corridor to the main holding tank. Here the sewer water can be seen flowing about 30ft below from an open section on the corridor above it.
Olyn hits the water hard, closely followed by Thorvald who's hanging on to the rope. Vauhwyt and Vorelle stay up top with the rope, ready to pull up when necessary. Olyn can make something out - a shock of white hair and a tangle of rope, about a foot above the water on one side of the tank, stuck on what looks like a narrow metal ladder. Cade sees it, too - and also notes that the water level markings on the side of the tank seem variable, like it rises and falls.
Back at the beginning of the Dock Sewer entrance, Zayne tries his best to calm the boy down, gradually getting him to slow his breathing, while Theodore waits to ask him some questions. Rose will note some nasty rope burns on the boys arms, and that his skin is very cold.
Cade d20+3=13 d20+3=14 Thursday August 7th, 2003 5:52:44 AM
"There!" yells Cade, pointing to what appears to be the boy, "He seems to be stuck in some rope on that ladder over there!"
Cade wonders where that ladder leads to, and if it would be quicker to try and head around and come down it if possible instead of swimming over to it. (Knowledge - local = 13)
Thinking of it in case the others haven't noticed it he yells, "Be careful, the water level in here seems to change, perhaps due to the tide or the waves at the outlet".
Cade also tries to think of why the water level in here changes and when it will rise again above the boy's position. (Knowledge - local = 14)
Theodore Thursday August 7th, 2003 8:51:20 AM
Seeing that Zayne has succeeded in calming the boy down, Theodore tries to take his attention off of the situation with a few questions.
"My friends will get your brother, so don't worry about that. You can help him now by letting us know what happened. Okay?" Theodore checks with the boy to make sure he's listening.
"My name's Theodore, but you can call me Theo for short. What's your name? Do you live around here? Now, tell us what happened."
Olyn d8+1=4 Thursday August 7th, 2003 9:57:00 AM
swimming as fast as he can, saying to himself: Wardd, grant me speed and luck to save this boy.
going to where the rope and tuff of white hair is, Olyn frantically searches for the boy, knowing that if he is in the water much longer, the coldness of the water can kill the child as fast as being under it.
*IF Olyn finds the boy, and he is alive, he will hold the child close to him, sharing body warmth while climbing up the ladder. *IF Olyn finds the boy alive, but in dire need of healing, he will cast a Cure Light Wounds on him before attempting to move him. (4 points)
Vorelle Thursday August 7th, 2003 10:28:13 AM
Liontaurs are stronger than humans, so Vorelle will let Vauhwyt deal with the big guy on the end of the rope. Instead, she runs to the ladder and begins climbing down. If she reaches the boy, her goal will be to disentangle him from the rope while keeping his head above water.
Thorvald Thursday August 7th, 2003 11:16:11 AM
Thorvald moves into a position to support Olyn and the boy. He will try to help the others free the boy from the ladder, and if successful, will remove the rope from his left hand and wrap and tie it around Olyn, as he holds the child close to him. He then yells for Vauhwyt to pull Olyn and the boy back to the ledge while holdng onto the rope himself and trying to help keep Olyn and the boy's heads above water as they're pulled back to safety.
Zayne Thursday August 7th, 2003 12:13:17 PM
Now that the boy is calming down, I offer the boy my waterskin and say "Take a drink of this." As I start to take off my cloak so I can have something to dry the other boy off with.
Vauhwyt d20+2=14 Thursday August 7th, 2003 7:06:56 PM
Holding the rope firmly, Vauhwyt stands ready, and when those in the water are set, she pulls them in.
"I'm big enough to be a good anchorr," she says, with a trace of accent, "but my arms are not those of an ogrre. So if anyone wants to help pull, please feel free!"
Indeed, her arms are those of a human woman, though perhaps of one who uses her hands in her work.

rose Thursday August 7th, 2003 7:12:18 PM
rose quickly pulls out a flask of hot tea, "here take a sip of this tea, and then tell us what happened. where are your parents?"
DM Jan Friday August 8th, 2003 12:08:07 AM
Cade points out the boy to the others, as Olyn reaches him below. With Thorvald's support, it's easy for Olyn to un-entangle the boy - who's very still, and as cold as ice. The Cure Light seems to knock him into life, and he starts to cry and shiver violently.
A combined effort from Olyn and Thorvald from below, and Vorelle and Vauhwyt from alongside and above, means the boy is brought back up to corridor level.
Cade's local knowledge will tell him that the water level in holding tanks can rise as much as 15ft above normal levels, depending on time of day, the weather, etc.
Olyn, Vorelle and Thorvald will have noted that the rope had the boy tied securely, but that a loop had caught on the ladder. Lucky. There was something about the knots in the rope too - they were tied in a particular way, like sailors knots, very tidy, very secure.
As for his brother, the one who raised the alarm, he blinks at Theodore and then grabs the water skin offered by Zayne. "My name is Bil - Billy," he squeaks, answering Theo's questions. "It wasn't our fault, we didn't do anything! We were listening, and -"
He suddenly goes quiet, and fear flashes across his eyes as he looks at Zayne, Theodore and Rose in turn - as if what he has to say next may get him into further trouble. "Is Timmi alright? Is he okay?" he sniffles. "Dad will go crazy."
The only other thing they can get out of him, is that he lives in the House of Keys area, and his father is called Jeraldh. Clutching at Zayne's cloak and sipping Rose's tea, he looks frightened out of his wits.
Cade Friday August 8th, 2003 6:18:45 AM
As he is not skilled in any form of healing the recently rescued boy (Timmi), Cade decides it best to give those who have such talents room to work and heads back up the sewer towards the other boy.
Approaching the others (who are with Billy), he says in a comforting tone to the boy, "You're brother will be ok, he's just a bit cold right now." To the others in the area he says, "What have we found out about what happened?"
Olyn d8+1=9 Friday August 8th, 2003 9:00:54 AM
climbing up out of the tank, Olyn goes over to Timmi and spontaneously casts another Cure Light Wounds on him. (9 hit points)
then, looking at those who helped, recognizing one, he asks as he pulls Timmi in close, to share body warmth: blankets, get me blankets for the boy. and someone call for the local investigator and also, someone pull up that rope. the lad wasnt tied there by his brother.
Vorelle Friday August 8th, 2003 9:53:22 AM
Vorelle goes after the rope--no way is she volunteering to go talk to strangers. This time, however, she takes the time to set her longbow carefully on the ground so that the bowstring doesn't get wet (or any wetter than it is). Then she climbs down the ladder again and retrives the rope. She will try to get it with as many of the knots intact as possible. If necessary, she will simply cut the rope free with her handaxe.
Thorvald Friday August 8th, 2003 10:36:39 AM
"Perhaps we should get the boys back home, where they can be properly cared for." Thorvald suggests. "I'm sure their parents will be worried and we can summon the local investigator there, in more comfortable surroundings."
Zayne d20=18 Friday August 8th, 2003 11:26:00 AM
I ask Billy "Who or what were you listening to? Was it the people that did this to your brother?" (18 on diplomacy)
Theodore Friday August 8th, 2003 2:06:08 PM
"Hmmm..." Theodore's eyes get a far away look to them as his brain starts to churn.
Slowly, he begins to speak, "What if...these boys witnessed a smuggling operation?" Now he starts to pick up speed. "Of course, the criminals caught them in the act and decided that they couldn't leave anyone to rat on them. They tie the boys up, this one escapes and begins to yell for help because he can't get his brother free."
Theodore stops for a moment to take a deep breath. Then he shakes his head in disbelief. "I can't believe it. I thought we had put all this mischief behind us. When will we learn?" He clenches his fist with a dramatic glance towards the sewer ceiling. Unfortunately for him, the ceiling remains silent. If it knows something, it's not talking.
Vauhwyt Friday August 8th, 2003 2:44:16 PM
The liontaur loops up her rope and just listens as others talk with the boys. She tries to keep alert for trouble sneaking up from other directions.
She feels a little nervous around the youngsters -- she is more used to threatening strangers than reassuring them. Her tail sweeps the floor nervously as she listens.
rose Friday August 8th, 2003 5:55:48 PM

Cade rejoins the others, followed shortly by the rest of the party with the rescued Timmi, and while Vauhwyt keeps watch, the others decide what to do about the situation.
Both boys look remarkably alike - twins perhaps, and Timmi is looking a whole lot better, apart from being a bit tearful.
Zayne gets a shaken head from Billy in answer to his first question, but a solemn nod to the second. Theodore's conjecture about a smuggling op however brings out the following - Timmi - 'No it was about killing som -!' Billy - 'SHHHH!!'
As for what to do - Should an 'investigator' be called? Should the boys be returned to their home, or the halfling quarter?
Observations that may affect the decision -
- the boys are frightened, and out of their own turf. It seems unlikely they'll say much more until they feel safe, and safe probably means Jeraldh and the House of Keys neighbourhood.
- Vauhwyt will notice more traffic in the corridor now - folk going about their business, but hesitating as they walk past - curious - some of them VERY curious and looking at the entire party with suspicion.
- local knowledge - This is Dirt City - who can be trusted? The dwarves in the House of Knives tried to keep 'some' kind of order in areas common to everyone, but most of the 'law' was handled by the various Houses, depending on who controlled the local territory. Right now - the party is on House of Cloak territory. Did one of them do this? The rope Vorelle has retrieved contains a bowline and a splicing knot commonly found in the dock area above, but could also have been tied up by others, particularly if they had a long heritage of riding the waves, and that could mean the House of Teeth.
One thing seemed obvious - a dark deed had been done to these boys, by someone who was not afraid to kill children in order to keep a secret. It had been done underground - where everyone was supposed to be safe. Even the newcomers knew that underground was a place of safety. Or was it?
Now what?
Olyn Monday August 11th, 2003 7:45:52 AM
let us take the children to the temple where they can get a change out of the wet clothes and some warm food in their bellies. we can send for their parents there.
i would rather have them someplace where i know they can be safe, than try to take em home and get jumped by whomever did this to these 2.
Thorvald Monday August 11th, 2003 8:13:57 AM
"We need to move toward the House of Keys neighborhood, now," Thorvald growls. "I feel like we're on display here and I am developing a strong urge to quell the curiosity of these strangers passing by....a good head butt to the nose of these staring idiots is starting to seem like a good idea," he mutters as he quickly gazes at each member of the group and waits for either an objection or someone to start leading down the corridor.
Cade d20+6=18 Monday August 11th, 2003 9:41:09 AM
In a slightly hushed tone Cade says, "I would recommend taking them home, then to the temple as I do not think it wise to involve the temple if we do not know what is going on."
Kneeling down besides the boys, Cade pats Billy cheerfully on the shoulder and says in a reassuring tone to them, "Do not worry boys, everything will be just fine and you should be home soon." (Bluff check of 18)
"Temple or their home distict, whichever the choise, can be decided along the way, as they are both in the same vicinity." Cade says as he begins walking towards to that area of Dirt City Below. Along the way Cade offers Billy his left hand, to hold his hand during the walk through the sewers.
(I used Bluff as it's telling the boys something that may be a lie, the safe part, and I'm figuring it is something that they want to believe)
Vorelle Monday August 11th, 2003 10:48:20 AM
Vorelle returns to the group with the soggy rope. Being careful not to splash or drip on anybody, she sets the rope down on the ground next to Olyn, the one who asked for it. She retreats a few paces, retrieves her bow, and begins wrigning out the hem of her cloak where she stands. Little streams of water splat softly to the pavement.
She listens intently to the discussion about what to do next, but says nothing. If the group begins to move, she will follow.
Zayne Monday August 11th, 2003 12:22:32 PM
"Now that brings several questions to my mind. 1 who's to say that these ruffians haven't already bribded the city watch? 2 If they will ruthlessly try to murder two children, what wont they do? 3 do they know where the children live, and if they are they going to try and silence the whole family? 4 by getting invloved what house's toes are we stepping on? Each question being marked off on a finger.
"I have a couple ideas, we could attempt to hunt these villians down like the dogs they are.Or we could nose around to see if we can find some clues or hints as to who's responsible."
Vauhwyt Monday August 11th, 2003 12:57:22 PM
The liontaur listens to Olyn, Thorvald, Cade, and Zayne talk about where to take the boys.
She tries not to let her dislike of the boys show. Vauhwyt has never much liked kids, and avoids them whenever she can. These ones seem discourteous and somewhat troublesome. Not even so much as a thank you for saving their miserable lives. No "sir" or "ma'am" either.
Vauhwyt shrugs, looks at Vorelle, and rolls her eyes. Then she steps up and says to the group, "We're making a bloody scene herre. Let's get these two back on their home turf before any curious Cloaks start asking questions. Put them in the middle of the group and surround them as we go -- that way we can keep them from the wrong eyes and make sure they don't run away."
As they walk toward Key ground, Vauhwyt keeps her eyes open -- looking out for trouble, looking in to make sure the boys are still there.
Theodore Monday August 11th, 2003 2:20:52 PM
Theodore squats next to Timmi and Billy. "Don't you boys worry a bit. We'll have you home in no time. Do you like magic?"
Suddenly, a green ball of light appears in the palm of Theodore's hand (prestidigation). The green ball moves slowly in between the two boys. If one tries to snatch at it, it darts away and again begins its slow orbit in a playful attempt to cheer up the children.
"You see, I'm a powerful wizard and no one can harm you now. My friends and I will protect you." The green ball winks out as he lays a comforting hand on Timmi's shoulder and pulls forth a piece of cured leather with the other hand. With a few muttered words, Timmi is much better protected (mage armor on Timmi).
After his little display, Theodore straigtens. "Let's take them home. I'll stay in the center with them." He blushes slightly. "I can't really fight," he whispers so the boys won't overhear. "So, I'll walk with them and try to make them feel better."
If the group agrees to form a circle around himself and the boys, Theodore will walk in the center and talk with the boys about their home and other chit-chat, steering clear of the latest situation.
rose Monday August 11th, 2003 5:23:05 PM
"my brother wouldnt be bribed!" rose says as she glares at Zayne "ok, lets take you home." as the boys stand she looks at them "hey, you guys are already bigger than me" she says smiling "you're going to grow up to be big and tall"

DM Jan Tuesday August 12th, 2003 1:40:13 AM
The group sets off to escort the boys in the direction of home - West along Main, then North and North East, up the Garotte Sewer corridor toward the Temple of Wardd and the House of Keys district that lies beyond.
Five humans, the more slender form of a half elf, a tiny halfling, and a large, elegant liontaur - their connection? Right now it was to escort two small rambunctious human boys back home and keep them safe on the journey. But what lay ahead? Perhaps the puzzle of why the boys had been attacked would keep them together a little longer, and perhaps they had already been placed together in the eyes of passers by - eyes that might have been friendly, indifferent, or sinister and planning harm. You never really knew where you stood in Dirt City. There was a surprise at every turn, and not always unpleasant.
Pushing through the Half Crescent Market, Olyn might be wise to worry about walking into strange territory. Folk seemed to be going about their business, but the liontaur was certainly bringing attention. One glance at Thorvald (and the liontaur for that matter) though, kept most folks at bay - no messing with either of those two.
Theodore, Rose and Cade succeed in making the boys settle down. Billy starts giving directions, although all three will note the boys tense up when the occasional half orc strolls past.
Zayne comes forth with more food for thought as the group travel along the corridors. Vorelle - her cloak drying nicely, will notice that each corridor has its own designs on the walls. It's getting quite busy now, and she's having to use her elbows to forge a way through every now and then.
Then - at the far end of the Market, a tall human male can be seen. His hair is long, a sweep of startling, brilliant white. His eyes are pink- tinged, and he stops right in front of the group, a worn, leaf green, embroidered velvet cloak sweeps the floor around his feet.
"Those are my boys," he says, his eyes and voice at odds with one another - relief in the former, a challenge in the latter. "Would you mind telling me what's going on?"
Olyn Tuesday August 12th, 2003 10:47:33 AM
immediately turning to see the expression on the 2 lads face to assure that this man speaks the truth.
if so, Olyn steps forward, talking in a low tone so as not to arouse curiosity from others: your sons were attacked by who knows but them, and we are escorting them home in the hopes that secure surroundings might facilitate some answers.
if he isnt. Olyn steps in front of the 2 boys, positioning himself between the man and the lads.
Theodore Tuesday August 12th, 2003 12:34:47 PM

If he sees anyone lingering to watch the scene, he tries to get a sense of why they are interested, be it common curiosity or other. (Sense Motive of 18)
Thorvald d20=10 Tuesday August 12th, 2003 11:16:50 PM
Thorvald crosses his massive arms and begins to glare at the man. (Intimidate 10+4+1=15) He also notices the the presence of half ors passing by and the boys reaction as well. This brings a low gutteral growl from him. "Half breed or pure blood they're all the same. The only good orc's a dead one," he snarls.
DM Jan Wednesday August 13th, 2003 12:27:10 AM
The boy's reaction - hung heads, glancing at one another guiltily, knowing they're potentially in big trouble - coupled with the physical similarities - same white hair, pale eyes and angular jawline, leave little doubt to the question as to whether they are related to this man.
The albino looks sharply toward Olyn when told his sons were attacked, and nods absolutely at Zayne's suggestion. Billy and Timmi hunker down behind Rose. Theodore's impression as he looks at the man, is that he is pleased to see his children, although he's not being particularly demonstrative about it.
Vauhwyt has no problem sheilding the boys from prying eyes on her side of the group. Folk seem more interested in her anyway - some quite appreciatively - until the claws come out of course, for there aren't too many liontaurs in Dirt City. This makes Vorelle's and Cade's job a whole lot easier, for anyone wishing to get a look-see at whats going on, would have to make some obvious moves. As it happens, apart from a few cursory glances. Folk seem to just go about their business.
The man stares back at Thorvald for a moment and raises an eyebrow. If intimidated, he hides it well. He then addresses the group. "Please, I would be very grateful if you would come with me to my home. I would like to know what happened, and also to thank you all for rescuing my boys from trouble. "My name is Jeraldh. I am a Staff member of the House of Keys. You will have safe passage here." He gives everyone a gracious bow, and seems genuine.
On the pathway past the Temple of Wardd and on into the House of Key's sector, he asks everyone - "So - what brings you all to Dirt City? Or do some of you call this home?"
A passing half orc hears Thorvald's remark and grins openly at him. It's a challenge , insolent, and one he knows the barbarian can't follow up. Not here anyway. The creature fades into the crowd, and again the boys tense up until he's gone.
Olyn Wednesday August 13th, 2003 12:52:15 AM
yes, Lord Jeraldh, I do call Dirt City my home. my name is Olyn and I am a Cleric of Wardd. and we graciously accept your offer of hospitality and security. for the sake of the children mind you.
when passing the Temple to Wardd, Olyn subconsciously rubs his right forearm through his tunic sleeve and smiles. and when he recognises one of the other clerics, he nods a hello and keeps walking with the group.
Olyn does keep listening to everything being said but keeps an eye on the children, even when in the safety of their home.
Theodore Wednesday August 13th, 2003 8:48:20 AM
Theodore smiles at the father of the boys, obviously relieved to be in safe territory. Staying near the boys, he follows along with the rest of the group.
"I live here, as well. I'm apprenticed to the famous wizard Geoffrey. Perhaps you've heard of him?"
Zayne Wednesday August 13th, 2003 12:00:23 PM
"I also call this home" simply stated.
As we walk I make note of the boys behavoir and begin to tug on my nose lost in thought, mumbling to myself.
Cade Wednesday August 13th, 2003 3:59:51 PM
While walking with the party Cade says to Jeraldh, "I thank you for your hospitality. My name is Cade and I've called Dirt City my home for as long as I can remember."
Vorelle d20+5=25 Wednesday August 13th, 2003 4:11:00 PM
Leaving the smalltalk to the others, Vorelle continues to watch out for trouble. (Spot check 25--natural 20). She remains as unobtrusive as possible and hopes nobody notices that she has not answered Jeraldh's question.
rose d20+5=9 Wednesday August 13th, 2003 4:26:24 PM
"oh I live here." she says as she keeps an eye out for trouble.

Vauhwyt Wednesday August 13th, 2003 7:20:19 PM
The seven-foot tall liontaur bows at the waist. "My name is Vauhwyt." When she says it, it sounds like "vow-wet."
She contrinues, "I'm not a native, but I've lived in Dirt City beforre. It is as much of a home as I have." The trace of a liontaur accent can be heard in her soprano voice.
She is dressed in studded leather armor that must have been custom made to cover as much of her as it does. She carries several bags as well -- which on a horse you might call saddlebags. Nonetheless, she seems light on her feet and has no obvious weapons -- other than those nature gave her, anyway.
She runs a hand through her auburn hair. It covers one ear, and in the exposed ear she wears a faintly glowing earing that looks like a tiny set of scales. As she bows, you might notice that the tuft of hair on the end of her tail (now standing straight up) is also auburn.
Thorvald d20=12 Wednesday August 13th, 2003 11:25:16 PM
Thorvald walks on quietly following the others. Small talk usually serves no purpose except to act as a distraction. He watches carefully for anything that might seem out of place or perhaps that fits in too well, especially people who may be watching just a little bit too intently. (other than just your curious bystander) Sopt=13
DM Jan Thursday August 14th, 2003 1:40:24 AM
The albino smiles and nods as those who wish to speak - speak, and not minding if others wish to keep silent. He looks puzzled at the mention of Geoffrey the wizard, but doesn't let on if he knows him or not. It's still pretty busy out on the 'streets' and in the hustle and bustle, some big cloaked fellow with a limp, his face hidden, brushes roughly past Vorelle in a hurry. Jeraldh leads the group into the depths of the House of Keys district, until he turns off a major corridor near the Keys Tower and raps hard on an oval door in an alcove. It is answered by a young human woman with dark hair, who exclaims "Oh - thank Wardd!" as soon as her eyes rest on the boys.
The dwelling beyond the door is low ceilinged, but spreads back quite a ways. In Dirt City terms - it's huge, meaning that Jeraldh must be fairly wealthy. Eclectic pieces of furniture hug the walls, well crafted but mis-matched, no doubt 'appropriated' from passing caravans up top.
The boys want to go with Lena, but a stern look for their father makes them stay, and while the woman goes to fetch refreshments for everyone, Jeraldh takes time to examine the boys, noting the rope burns still adorning Billy's arms. He gives a sigh and returns his attention to the group, beckoning them to sit down. "I'm a widower of two years," he explains. "I do my best, but keeping an eye on two boys AND the inner politics of Dirt City is difficult at best. Consequently my two sons always seem to be getting into trouble. We all miss their mother, Wardd bless her. Lena does her best of course, but its not quite the same, is it."
At that point, the woman returns with a large tray full of a local brew of iced tea, and plates piled high with small but tasty looking fruit pies, which she offers around.
With a nod from Jeraldh, she leaves, closing the door behind her. "Boys," the albino says sternly. "Thank these people for bringing you home." Billy and Timmi say 'thank you' all cowed and shy. "Please," their father says to the group. "What happened? Were they stealing? Not from you good people I hope?"
rose Thursday August 14th, 2003 4:12:34 AM
"No sir, somebody tried to kill them. We found them in the sewer. Bill had escaped, Timmi was tied up within reach of the tide. Apparently they had over heard something and were caught. To think that someone would try to kill children and Underground to!!"
Rose is obviously upset at the thought of the boys being killed.
Olyn Thursday August 14th, 2003 11:09:12 AM
giving Rose a look for blurting out what she said, Olyn turns to Jeraldh saying:
most of us were in the Marketplace when we heard Billy's scream. when we showed up we heard that his brother was still in the tank, and it was rising with water so I jumped in and some others moved around the tank to assist. with all help we found that Timmi was tied to the ladder by a rope <motions that the rope be given to Jeraldh> . we extracated him from the bonds, removed him from the tank where upon we found his breathing all but gone. with help from Wardd I was able to revive him and, after a few minutes of blanket wrapping and questions, we decided to escort the lads here before any investigators were summoned and before questions were asked. most of the people sitting here I do not know, but let me take this time to thank each and every one of you for coming to the aid of these children. with a supposed peace in the city happening, it is good to see that some take it seriously and are striving for the same goal.
Zayne Thursday August 14th, 2003 1:19:08 PM
Taking a fruit pie and nodding his thanks to Lena. Walks over to where Olyn and Jeraldh are and listens intently to what being discussed and absently tugs at his long nose as he works out an idea he has been thinking about.
Vorelle Thursday August 14th, 2003 1:49:22 PM
Once inside and in relative safety, Vorelle again lowers her head and drops her gaze to the floor. She stands near a wall, doing her best to blend in with the furniture.
(OOC back in the tunnel Vorelle put the rope on the ground next to Olyn. If Olyn didn't pick it up, there's a chance that we no longer have it with us.)
Theodore Thursday August 14th, 2003 4:41:45 PM
Theodore happily takes a couple of pies and a glass of ice tea offered by Lena. Not having much room to talk around the food in his mouth, he doesn't. But he listens with obvious interest, smiling at the boys every once in a while.
DM Jan Friday August 15th, 2003 1:09:53 AM
As Rose and Olyn offer explanations, everyone else listening closely, the boys seem to want to interject, but a glare from Jeraldh keeps them silent.
Their father's frown grows deeper as he hears what his boys have had to go through.
"Alright you two - talk," he says eventually, and the boys seem to fall over themselves to tell their tale.
It wasn't their fault. They had been over in the Cloaks sector, playing in the tunnels. They had unknowingly crept up on two men - one of them a half orc, the other human, and heard a name mentioned - Sarla - and being paid for her death. Thats when Timmi sneezed, and they got caught, although to hear Timmi tell it, it was Billy that sneezed, but it wasn't his fault. The half orc hit them, and the next thing they knew, they were hanging precariously in the Dock Sewer holding tank, about to drown. Billy had managed to wriggle free, but didn't have the strength to help his brother, and so he ran for help. Apparently, the half orc had a limp, and 'breathed funny'. They didn't know anything else. The other man had been heavily cloaked. After spilling the beans, they blink at the party like owls.
At the mention of Sarla, Jeraldh seems to turn as white as his hair.
**Local knowledge - the name Sarla rings a bell, and a formidable one at that. She's the daughter of the Alpha of the House of Wolves. The Wolves of course being the one House NEVER to be messed with, if you had any sense. Rumour had it - she was about to marry a member of the Teeth, and for anyone who had a sense of history, that was a poignant union indeed.
What now?
Theodore Friday August 15th, 2003 10:50:29 AM
Theodore's brows furrow slightly at the mention of Sarla. "You don't think it could be Sarla, of the House of Wolves?"
The look on Jeraldh's face answered his question, well enough. Theodore swallowed his pie and looked towards the others of his group. "That's very bad. If she is murdered, there might very well be another war in Dirt City. We should inform the Guard right away, and let the House of Wolves know that Sarla is in danger."
Zayne Friday August 15th, 2003 4:35:39 PM
"Hmmmm....yes we should, but we should also see if we can find this limping half-orc. There are a couple of things we can do. 1 we can go to the guard now with the boys'story.2 we can try and catch the orc ouselves and interrogate him about the specifics of this plot.3 we can try to warn Sarla." Zayne looks around the room to see everyone's reactions then smiles at the boys, and looks to Olyn with a look of self satisfaction on his face.
Vauhwyt Friday August 15th, 2003 5:21:44 PM
The liontaur, speaking up after listening for a while, smiles at Zayne. "This fellow has a point, and not just the one sticking out of his face!"
"But how can we go to the Wolves and say, 'An asthmatic half-orc has it in for Sarla, two kids said so!' They would laugh at us -- if we were lucky!"
"Yet if disaster befell, the Wolves would have our hides if they found out we did nothing!"
"So why don't we try the second course -- finding this half-orc? I know some of us here have the skills we need to track prey."
"Remember, the Wolves could hold us all to blame, so we better work togetherr. Like I said, I'm Vauhwyt. I've worked as a freelance enforcer aboveground, and I know a little about magic items. I'm okay in a fight, and if we catch this half-orc, I think I can get him to spill the beans."
"Why not tell us who each of you all are, and what you can do to help?"
[edited by Cayzle on 8/16 to change "Teeth" to "Wolves." My bad.]
rose Friday August 15th, 2003 6:05:21 PM
"My name's Rosalynn Gladstone. I have various skills and a large family. I think we should tell the guards, preferrably my uncle Vicbin. He should be able to warn Sarla and her family. I'm not sure if any of my other relatives would know who would want her dead, but there are several clerics, magic users, and others among them they may or may not be able to help us find out what's going on.
(dm, gets to decide the rank of my relatives and what they may or may not know.)
Thorvald Friday August 15th, 2003 8:42:05 PM
"No need to track orcs, You can usually smell them from about two miles off!" Thorvald growls. "But that does seem to be the best course. Let's find thid half-orc fellow and TALK to him." Thorvald smiles significantly at his last statement. No one really recalls seeing the big man smile before and the sentiment doesn't really seem to attach itself to any sort of common emotion. This is something entirely different.

Jeraldh listens as the group come up with suggestions and observations, nodding his head, and raising his eyebrows. He then says to everyone -
"I beg you to look into this, and I wish to help you any way I can, for the following reasons - As you say - if true, this could start a war, and we've been struggling for years to keep the peace, and ensure that a war will never happen again - if hostilities flare up, all that work will have been for nothing. Also my sons - they are dearer to me than life itself, especially since my wife died. I would do anything that would ensure their safety.
"I must tell you to move with caution, however. As one of you has said - if you walk into House of Wolves territory without proof, you'll be lucky to get away with your throats slit and they don't 'play' with you first. You must somehow get proof of this before you approach the Wolves."
He gives a long sigh, and continues.
"I cannot impress upon you how dangerous this is. You look to be good people. This may drop you deep into Dirt City politics until you're way over your head, and normally I would not wish this on anyone. By way of recompense - I will pay you well for this investigation. Once we know what is going on, then the better I can protect my boys. "Also - boys stay right where you are."
He beckons the group, and leads them out of the House. Next door is another oval-shaped door. The albino takes some keys out of his pocket, unlocks this door and pushes it open. Inside is what looks to be a much smaller house. It has four square rooms, one of which houses basic 'facilities'. It seems a little dusty, unfurnished but dry.
"If you wish to use this house as a base for your operations, by all means, feel free. Here, you will be free from prying eyes. Including mine. Tell me what you wish to do. I'm hoping that whoever did this to my children, doesn't know they're still alive, and I hope you were able to find some clues?"
*Rose's listen check - she catches something in the whisper - about a limp.
Vorelle d20+1=21 Monday August 18th, 2003 11:17:11 AM
Vorelle looks up a Cade. Her eyes, difficult to see when they're cast down, prove to be gray.
"I-I r-r-remember the m-m-m-m-m-man," she says softly. A flush begins to creep over her face as she stammers. She tries to remember details she might have noted at the time.
(OOC: her spot check at the time was 25, and now she's got a 21--either int or wis--to remember anything she may have seen)
Vauhwyt Monday August 18th, 2003 1:29:18 PM
After Jeraldh makes his generosity plain, Vauhwyt for one says, "I will take you up on your offerr -- since I have no other place yet to go!" She smiles and adds, "For our own sake and for the sake of your boys, I myself thank you." She will take one of the apartment keys if it is offered.
Seeing Cade approach Vorelle, Vauhwyt steps closer and stands taller -- she begins to have a fierce look on her face as she regards Cade. But hearing her shy friend speak, Vauhwyt smiles and relaxes.
"If you two have a glimmer of a lead, then great! Maybe we can find this man, or maybe we can find the orc."
"Shall we be off quickly, then, before the trail grows cold?"
Zayne Monday August 18th, 2003 1:45:28 PM
Looking at Vorelle and Cade,"Yes, if someone knows something, now would be the best time to share information. A little planning now can save lives later, especially considering what we are up against." Then after a few moments he lets out a laugh "Sorry about that everyone, I don't want you to think I am giving commands, it's just I am angry about what happened to the boys. I think I should go sit down and try to relax."
Olyn Monday August 18th, 2003 2:10:57 PM

Theodore Monday August 18th, 2003 3:00:40 PM
Theodore scratches at the back of his neck, though he can't really scratch as the too long sleeves of his tunic cover his hands.
"I would like to help the boys, and finding this half-orc sounds interesting. But I don't know if my master will allow me to or not. Of course, I'll have to ask him."
Theodore quickly scurries off down the tunnel.
Cade Monday August 18th, 2003 3:56:07 PM
"I apologize for my rather rude actions, but I wished to speak with Vorelle first about the matter for two reasons. First was to make sure I was not jumping at shadows, or inspiring false hopes..." Cade says
Continuing with a sigh, "...to avoid scaring the boys or their father any further, but as everyone wishes to hear it, I believe one of the two that the boys overheard may already know about their safety. What I mentioned to Vorelle, was asking about the heavily cloaked figure with a visible limp that brushed roughly past her, and if perhaps she was able to get a good glimpse of the person."
Cade then turns to the father and says, "I apologize for how this occurred, and I was hoping to tell you my concerns after the boys had left."
Cade turns again to face Vorelle saying, "And to you as well, Vorelle, I apologize for any discomfort this may have caused you."
Cade then returns to leaning upon a nearby wall to listen to the conversation.
rose Monday August 18th, 2003 9:20:50 PM

DM Jan Tuesday August 19th, 2003 1:43:27 AM
Jeraldh drops the keys in Vauhwyt's hand with a nod.
As for the revelation about the cloaked figure with the limp who'd brushed past Vorelle - could it be true? That the boys had been spotted? Vorelle remembers what seemed to be a heavily built pair of shoulders, and someone obviously in a hurry. She didn't catch sight of their face, as it was turned away - on purpose?
Jeraldh is glad he is able to hear this little snippet of info. "This one is right," he says, pointing to Zayne. "The more info we have the better." To Cade he says - "Do not worry about the boys - if it stops them from wandering, I can keep a better eye on them, and thank you for being so sharp eyed. Right now I'm going to put them under permanent curfew. No one will dare touch them in my house."
Theodore and Rose have to get permission before they join this adventure, and while they both dash off, Vorelle, Vauhwyt, Thorvald, Olyn, Zayne and Cade are faced with a decision or two.
The liontaur is eager to be off, but where should the group go first in their quest to find this mysterious half-orc with evil intent?
The group has a description of him. Apart from that - the only other clue is the rope....
** Theodore dashes off to see Geoffrey, who seems quite excited about the adventure his apprentice is about to embark upon. He gives his permission, telling Theo that a little practical application for his spells will be good practice. He also tells the young man to be extra careful if they go up to the surface. "There are no rules up there, Theodore, so stick close to your friends and watch your back. There will come a day when men will fear you, for the power you weild, but that day isn't here yet."
** Rose's family are initially horrified, and she has one heck of a job trying to persuade them to let her go on such a dangerous adventure. It's only the thought of the boys, and what could have happened, that finally melt their hearts, and they finally agree. She recieves all kinds of advice - enough to make her head spin, mostly basic things about keeping safe. Some of her family have heard of Jeraldh of the House of Keys - "He's a politician, got a lot of ambition that one, but we have never heard any scandal or bad things in particular." Most of the spare furniture they have, would be too small for Rose's new friends they reckon - but they promise to be on the lookout in the markets for items that might do.
Theo and Rose do not dawdle, and just over an hour later - they are back with the group.
Dirt City awaits. It is late morning, almost lunchtime. Underground - the tunnels are full of folk, going about their business. Up on the surface - the early morning fog has cleared. Groups of people travel in close-knit groups, along streets powdered with the black, fine grit that Dirt City is famous for. Some have guards with them. The Towers are manned, and guards look outward. The Docks has it's usual quota of sailing ships tied up along the quayside.
On both levels, the taverns are open for business, and of course the Bath Houses are always open.
Olyn Tuesday August 19th, 2003 8:44:40 AM
starts cleaning the little house while rose and theo are away. when they return, he turns to the rest of the group saying: why dont we bait the 2 that attacked the boys. we know what the children look like, 2 of us can disguise ourselves to look like them, while the others watch at a distance, and when or if the 2 mongrels show up to finish the job, we <<pounce>> on em.
let them come to us instead of us tripping over ourselves finding them. you know we are going to tip our hand while looking for em.
Theodore Tuesday August 19th, 2003 10:03:01 AM
Theodore returns to the group an hour later, huffing and puffing, but with a wide smile on his face. "My master...said...he said...that I could help out."
The teenage wizard stands up straight and takes a deep breath to collect himself. "I'm ready to find the hooligans responsible for the attack on these boys. First, let me introduce myself. My name...is Theodore." He tries to bow extravagantly, but trips over his lengthened trousers and just catches himself before crashing to the apartment floor.
Standing, he dusts himself off and continues, "I am a wizard, though still an apprentice." He blushes slightly. "But I do have a few tricks up my sleeve, so please don't underestimate me."
"I believe our first plan of action should be to gather information. So we know what we're walking into. Right now, we have very few clues. Perhaps, we might try to weedle some information out of the Cloaks. Their espionage skill is legendary, and they know something about everything. We also found the boys in their territory. I'm certain someone other than just Timmi and Billy must have seen what happened."
Vorelle Tuesday August 19th, 2003 1:03:16 PM
If Vauhwyt (or anybody else) decides to leave right away to try to find the half-orc, then Vorelle will go along.
If everybody decides to wait, Vorelle will take the opportunity to go back to her lodgings and retrieve her belongings. Since she has nobody's permission to ask, she will probably return a little before Rose and Theodore.
Zayne d20+4=5 d20+4=16 Tuesday August 19th, 2003 2:24:20 PM
"I have to go pick up something, I wont be gone long." Zayne says simply. Then he politely excuses himsef.
Heading to the Cloak house, to see if anyone might know of a limping orc? Stopping briefly by the docks where this all began, looking for tracks. (4 on the search the second was an accident)
Vauhwyt Tuesday August 19th, 2003 3:05:49 PM
The liontaur is irked when people start to just take off. She feels the trail growing cold as they wait.
But it would be too suicidal to split off in pairs or alone.
But none of this is obvious unless the observer is looking at the liontaur's tail -- which is twitching back and forth, side to side.
When Olyn offers his idea about baiting a trap for the villains, Vauhwyt smiles. "I like that idea," she says, "but can we set our trap with convincing enough bait? I agree that the last thing we want is to give ourselves away."
"I think the best plan is a multi-prong strategy. Some might be able to discreetly gather info and rumor. Some might be able to track unseen. And this trap idea could work too. I think we should try all three. But we shoudl stick close enough to help one another in case of catastrophe."
In the meantime, seeing Vorelle heading out, she joins the ranger, if that's okay. "We could use the time to catch up -- it has been too long since we had a chance to visit," she says softly to her friend. She distracts herself by suggestion that Vorelle, Vauhwyt, and Rose share one of the two bedrooms.
Cade d20+7=16 d20+4=8 d20+3=16 Tuesday August 19th, 2003 5:14:56 PM
With all of the preparation work and everyone running this way and that, Cade decides it best to go and try to locate some more information.
He says, "I am going to head to the Crescent Moon Market, which is nearby, to see if any of the local merchants there have seen anyone fitting the description of this half-orc. I should only be a few moments, but if you need to leave before then please leave a missive in this room provided, or look for me in the marketplace."
With that he makes his way back to the market, attempting to blend into the crowd (Hide - 17) and then discreetly asking the local merchants if they have seen or know of a half-orc fitting the boys' description (Gather Information - 8). While doing this he is also keeping an eye out for the half-orc or anyone attempting to follow him (Spot - 16).

((OOC - DM Recommendation - stick together, work together. Dirt City has a nasty habit of swallowing individuals whole. My last post had you all lined up as a group at the end of it. The time for any individual action without danger has now passed.
Okay - I'll allow Zayne's and Cade's action to have happened during the same hour as Rose and Theodore's. Or - if anyone wishes to change their action this round and post again, be my guest. Lets regroup, ladies and gentlemen. You are up against assassins after all ;) Think the boys are the only ones in danger? Mwahahahahaha))
Vauhwyt Tuesday August 19th, 2003 5:23:07 PM
(I'm assuming that Vauhwyt and Vorelle go off to fetch Vorelle's stuff in the same hour that Rose and Theodore go off and return)
On their trip, Vauhwyt tells Vorelle about what the last year has held for her. She tries to draw out her friend (not always easy).
Vorelle--clarification Tuesday August 19th, 2003 10:00:07 PM
OOC--I probably wasn't clear enough before. If anybody leaves with the intention of looking into the incident--whether it's asking around, or following somebody, or whatever--then Vorelle will go with them.
She would have gone after her own stuff only if it looked like everyone else was staying put, but that didn't happen. She would have followed Cade when he said he was going to the market.
DM Jan Wednesday August 20th, 2003 12:05:18 AM
That past hour yielded the following from some of the others-
Vorelle and Vauhwyt wander out together - not a bad idea seeing as it's safer that way and talk while bringing back Vorelle's stuff. The liontaur does her best to bring out the shy human ranger.
Zayne dashes over to the Cloaks - his contacts don't know anything about a limping half orc in particular. They question why he is wanting to know. (Dave - email me? Tell me if he tells them anything about the plot, or whether he keeps quiet.)
Cade's observations around the market yield nothing out of the ordinary. As he see's the mixed population of human, dwarf, halfling, demi-human wandering about - he'll note that a limping half orc, per se - isn't that unusual.
Once everyone is back together - tactics are discussed - Set up some kind of ambush? Gather info? Ask the cloaks? Try and find that half orc?
Things that may affect the decision-making process -
An ambush might prove dangerous, after all - how many 'bad guys' are out there? Who's involved? Also - any obvious attacks below ground by the party may lead to prosecution by whoever's territory they're on. Violence is not allowed Underground.
Info so far seems to be very limited. What does this mean - that no one knows about it? or that some do, and aren't letting on. Perhaps they're behind it. Who knows? Who can the party really trust?
The Cloaks - can they be trusted?
Where were the boys found? Perhaps the question should be asked - if you were a limping half orc with two unconscious boys to drown - how far could you carry them while avoiding detection? And again, there's the rope and how the knots were tied.... sometimes the smallest things can point the way...
Olyn Wednesday August 20th, 2003 1:12:33 AM
when everyone is back together. and ideas are being thrown around, Olyn pipes up:
everything we are discussing all comes back to the same thing. information. we need information. now, I dont see us doing this investigation and having it completed in a matter of days. it may take weeks and with everything going on, what with the supposed peace, there is probably a whole lot more to this incident than we know right now. so on this note, I think the logical place to begin is on and around the docks. the knots on the rope holding Timmi are as sure as i am sitting here, those done by a sailor. now, how we go about getting the info as to who makes those knots I cannot say. but going to the docks, watching it and maybe some taverns that are frequented by sailors might produce some info and maybe we'll even see a half orc limping.
let us go back to the children, let us get as much information that we can get on this half orc including as detailed a description as we can get, and start from there.
I dont need to tell you what we are about to begin is something very uncommon here. we are all from different houses and factions. right now we all feel and think the same but others seeing us wont have the same reaction as we do. so we have to start being VERY careful on everything we do, and from here on out, we all go together as 1. we are a Team, and you will notice there is no "I" in the word team.
Vauhwyt Wednesday August 20th, 2003 9:47:15 AM
After listening to Olyn, the liontaur in studded leather nods her head. "We do have to work togetherr. And unless I am very much mistaken, we here are not among the great and powerful."
"We are weak, and we only have two advantages: One -- we come from all over the city, as Olyn says. And Two -- nobody knows who we arre. We have to be careful to keep that second advantage. Secrecy is our shield. We have to keep our heads down. We have to keep below peoples' notice. Already we are compromised because Jeraldh knows who we arre."
The big liontaur grins. "That's especially hard for me because I stick out like a sore thumb! But I am going to do my best to keep out of sight unless I am needed."
"Olyn is right -- we do need more information. We have a little to start with -- an asthmatic half-orc with a limp. Knots tied by someone who knows from ships. It's true that there are lots of limping half-orcs -- but how many are there who breathe funny and work the docks?"
"I think we have to head above ground to the harbor. We need to see if we can get a lead on this half-orc. But above all else, we have to be discreet! If one or two of us are asking questions, the rest have to stay out of sight but within earshot in case of trouble. I suggest that we all carry whistles -- if we run into trouble, blow the whistle to bring the rest of us coming."
"If we do all come together for a fight, let's disperse after the fight so that we are not seen as a group."
"But our goal right now it to gather info, not to start trouble."
"I have 20 gold pieces to kick into the pot. Use the money to buy whistles and to grease the wheels as we talk to people." She puts the gold on a table, or on the floor if there is no table.
"Who is good at talking to strangers and finding out stuff? We need people who can be discreet but who can draw out sources."
At the end of this very long speech, Vauhwyt steps back to see what others say.
Zayne Wednesday August 20th, 2003 4:46:32 PM
Upon returning to the apartment, he shares any information he may have gotten about the half orc and listens to waht everyone has to say about what they have found out.
After listening to Vauhwyt, he nods his head in agreement, and then frowns,"You are right about us being limited in our recources but,you also forgot to take into account that we have no idea when they might try to kill Sarla. We may only have hours to act or maybe even days. They also know that the boys at least know about whats going on, that could make then hurry and in their haste they migt make mistakes or they might give up on the idea....again I am sorry, I am rambling and speaking when we should be thinking and planning." After a moment to look at the expressions on everyone's faces he takes a seat with a worried look on his face.
Theodore Wednesday August 20th, 2003 5:19:44 PM
Theodore nods at Olyn and Vauhwyt's reasoning. "I agree. I think we should retrieve the rope to examine it further. Then on to the harbor."
He scrubs his sleeve across his nose, then rubs his hand through his hair.
rose Wednesday August 20th, 2003 6:43:17 PM
"I have to agree with all of you, but we cant help sarla if we dont have any concrete information. we need to be thinking of ways of how to inform her without letting anybody else know and in such a way that she will believe us. I don't think we should even tell members of her family, what if it's one of them who wants her dead.
I'm not very good at finding out information, and i've never been to the docks above, but i'll do my best.
Vauhwyt we won't need that much money for some whistles, but can anybody think of other things we might need?"
while rose is talking she is in what will be the girl's room making her bed and hanging clothes on a peg (if there is one), in the main room putting away supplies. when she is done putting away things all that she has on her is a set of brown clothing, a belt pouch, with chalk, flint and steel, waterskin, thieves tools, a potion, some money and (depending on dm) a seal or two.
occ: dm jan 1. can rose have one or more of these seals seal of liquid sharing, seal of night flying, seal of curing. 2. rose has left 6pp at her parents house 3. could you get us some information on any banks in the city.

oops, rose also has on leather armor, and is carrying a shortbow and quiver (bow right shoulder, quiver left), sap (on belt), 2 daggers (one in boot silver, one in wrist sheath regular), and 4 darts (on belt)
Cade Wednesday August 20th, 2003 7:24:57 PM
Upon returning from the market, he listens to everyone speak, then says, "I agree with all that has been said so far... information I feel is what we truly need at this time. Sadly I was unable to turn up any information at the local merchants and I did notice that there are quite a few half-orcs with a limp out there..."
Leaning upon the wall, he continues "I would be willing to try and gather any information you would like, as being human, well frankly, we're everywhere and I can speak orc if the need arises."
After a brief pause, and a momentarily look of contemplation, he continues "I'm unsure that whistles would be a good idea, as they may attract too much attention, besides our group. Any other ideas for a signal?"
rose Thursday August 21st, 2003 12:20:11 AM

Nothing more can be got out of the kids. Jeraldh has them locked in the house under guard.
The general concensus appears to be a trip to the docks.
Local knowledge - during the day, it's busy, a place where a lot of deals are made. High ranking members of the various houses can be seen rubbing shoulders with the lowest apprentice. At night? Deals continue - but you don't go there unless you're up to no good, and/or have a good few bodyguards.
The nearest Tower to the docks - is the Cloak Tower.
Ladies and gentlemen, please let me have your marching order somewhere within your post, and a spot check as you travel.

Under the theory that a large goup would draw too much unwanted attention, Vorelle fades into the background (Hide 19) and paralells the party as they head to the docks. This might also help her get a clearer shot, should trouble arise.
Speaking of trouble, she is on the lookout for it (Spot 24).

"I think we need to travel togetherr, but if we are all one group, we will be too obvious. Why don't we travel in smaller groups, but all within earshot or line of sight."
"I suggest that we use whistles for now, until we need them to alert each other that there is an emergency. But after we use them one time, we can't use them again. The second time we can use a song, or a shout, or a code word, or a bell. Each time, a new signal -- if we are unpredictable and random, no one will see a pattern."
The liontaur travels to the harbor area with the group, but not all in one mob. Instead, Vauhwyt walks with Olyn, just the two of them, but within line of sight of others.
As she walks, she watches carefully and talks softly with Olyn. She tells him she was born to a traveling clan of merchant liontaurs, but she hasn't seen her family in many years. She got to Dirt City a little over two years ago. She worked as a freelance enforcer for the Teeth for a while. Then she got a job at a magic shop.
She asks him about his background.
At the dock area, Vauhwyt tries to hang back and be inconspicuous. But she has little luck with that (Hide check 3! Ugh!). So she just glares at anyone who looks at her (Intimidate 24 vs other large folk; 28 vs medium sized people).
Theodore d20+2=6 Thursday August 21st, 2003 2:21:57 PM
"I actually have a spell that might facilitate us should we need to communicate from a distance without being overheard. That might come in handy."
The young wizard grins apologetically, "Of course, I don't have that particular spell available, right now." He sighs and shakes his head, obviously perturbed with himself.
When the party decides to head to the dock, Theodore sticks close to Cade, believing himself safer next to the big man.
Cade d20+3=15 d20+3=4 Thursday August 21st, 2003 3:59:10 PM
Thinking better than to leave the young wizard alone by blending into the crowd, Cade stays walking with the young wizard, attempting to keep a small distance between them and the rest of the party.
During the walk to the docks, Cade discusses with Theodore local small talk, such as recent weather, any recent arena fights and other things to help blend them into the crowd.
While doing this Cade is also trying to keep an eye (spot 15), and an ear (listen 4), open to his surroundings. He is doubtful though that he will hear anything due to the noise of their conversation and that of the others travelling the sewers.

DM Jan Friday August 22nd, 2003 1:51:18 AM
The group makes a good attempt at traveling through the crowds while disguising the fact they're a 'group'. In twos and ones, everyone walks back through the market and the way they came when this adventure started, but this time they follow Main all the way along to the Cloak Tower.
Wide, well-worn steps begin to spiral upward in a gentle curve, eventually disappearing out of sight. There are a few folk at the bottom of the Tower shaking their cloaks, letting the dirt from above fall to the floor. Not too far away - a wizened old man with a long brush is glaring at them.
Other people are starting to move up the stairs to the surface. There's a slight breeze here at the base of the Tower, and a smell of sea salt and ozone. At first look - there appear to be no guards here, but every now and then, two men, with cloaks down to their mid calf quietly and subtly approach some of the descendants. It looks as though they're checking peace-tied weapons.
Vauhwyt draws people's eyes every now and then and she walks with Olyn - eyes that quickly go about their business when they get the full benefit of her glare. So far, Olyn hasn't spotted anything out of the ordinary.
Theodore and Cade follow a little ways behind, but are still aware of the rest of the group - except for Rose, who seems to have disappeared completely. Cade has a feeling that makes him uneasy. Can't pin it down though.
At the rear of the group, Zayne has spotted what he thinks is a pattern of stalking. A smallish cloaked figure 30ft ahead of him, who seems to follow in Vauhwyt and Olyn's distance wake. Could be a kid, or a halfling. He's not sure. But the figure doesn't appear to have connected Theo and Cade - directly in front of him, as part of the group.
Vorelle, off to the side has had a better look. She also has spotted the small figure - a young, grimy face - his eyes on the liontaur ahead. There's grime on his cloak, too.
Rose has made a very good job at blending in with the crowd. She hasn't noticed the young figure, but she knows exactly where Zayne and Vorelle are.
At this point - the party is approaching the Cloak Tower steps, and it's lunchtime.

Theodore walks along with Cade, blissfully unaware of anything out of the ordinary. "You know what bothers me," says Theodore. "That you never hear the phrase, 'It's a nice day out today' down here. Isn't that odd? I mean, don't you get lonely for the sun every once in a while?"

Walking along the sewer with the young wizard, he gestures for him to come over to take a look at one of the nearby murals and says, "That is why I love the murals of this area, they make you feel as though you are still walking outside."
Looking at the murals, one notices that they are of streets and alleyways, lending an air of above ground life to the close confines of the sewer. "Let's go take a closer look, Theodore," he says and as they approach the edge, Cade appears to trip on something and catches himself on Theo's arm (Bluff check 19). While close Cade whispers quietly into Theodore's ear "Do not act surprised, but something just is not right here".
While continuing talking to Theo about the nearby mural, Cade secretly takes another look around (Spot check 21) and tries to listen to his surroundings (Listen check 23), attempting to pin down what is giving him these uneasy feelings.
DM Jan Monday August 25th, 2003 2:43:11 AM
The steps up to the surface lead up in a wide arc. On the interior walls of the Tower, are murals depicting lanes, streets, alleys, houses and inns - as though BELOW seeks to blend itself in with ABOVE. They are two dimensional paintings of course, but done well, and at a glance look as though you could step right into them and walk along those painted streets.
The further the party moves upward, the more gritty the steps become. What looks like a black powder, gathers in tiny drifts in every corner it can find. The smell of above - cool, laced with sea salt, tickles everyone's nostrils.
As Olyn and Vauhwyt ascend - Olyn happens to notice Zayne behind him further down the steps, closing in on something or someone. Cade expresses his gut feeling that something is wrong to Theodore. Something's afoot, which in a moment becomes all too obvious for everyone.
Suddenly, the figure seems to realise that Vorelle has spotted him. He wheels around and Zayne gets a good view of what looks like a male human teenager - skinny as a rake, with furtive eyes. The teen doesn't recognise him as one of the party, as Zayne is well blended in with the crowd. Neither does he take note of Rose, also hidden in the crowd.
Figuring he's been made - he makes a run for it - ahead of Zayne, Rose and Vorelle - leaping up the wide steps, two at a time. He's heading for the outside, and he's fast. He dives past Cade and Theo, hoping to dash past the half elf and the liontaur, too.
There are no guards on the steps. There is no violence allowed down below. Above - is another matter entirely.

Olyn tries positioning himself to where the kid has to try running him over to get away, in an attempt to slow him down so the group can get him.
Vauhwyt d20+1=21 d20+6=24 d20+1=20 d20+6=7 Monday August 25th, 2003 10:48:05 AM
Vauhwyt moves (if necessary) so that the human boy has to run right past her. As he does so, he will provoke an attack of opportunity (right?). Note that under 3.5 Vauhwyt takes up a 10'x10' square.
The liontaur will take that AoO as a trip attempt. (If he is armed, the boy will get an attack of opportunity when Vauwyt tries this.)
Vauhwyt makes a melee touch attack against the boy (he loses his Dex bonus to AC when running). Holy Smokes -- a natural 20! Well, she touches him!
Then she makes an oppoesed Str check against the boy's Str or Dex, whichever is higher. She gets a +4 bonus for being large. Wow! My lucky day! A 24! He would have to have an 18 Str and roll a 20 just to tie. I think it is safe to assume he is tripped.
Vauhwyt sticks out a paw as the boy runs past and trips him!
That was the Attack of Opportunity. Now, with her regular attack, Vauhwyt pounces on him! (Grapple attempt). She makes a touch attack to start the grapple (the boy has a -4 AC penalty for being prone) -- if the boy already made an AoO, he can't make another unless he has the combat reflexes feat. (A 20! She touches him). Then Vauhwyt makes an opposed check to grapple: a natural one! Her luck runs out!
Vauhwyt pounces on the boy, but he rolls out from under her when she tries to get a hold on him.
Note! Getting up from prone provokes an attack of iopportunity, so if he tries to get up, Vauhwyt will use her AoO to trip him again! (Touch attack mod +1, Opposed trip mod +6).
Vorelle Monday August 25th, 2003 1:15:42 PM
Vorelle darts up the stairs. Her goal is to keep the kid in sight and, if possible, find out where he runs to. His destination could be an important clue.
On the way up the stairs, she slips the peacebinding off of her handaxe. If she's going Above, she'll want her weapons accessible.
She hesitates briefly when she sees Vauhwyt tackle the kid up ahead, but continues up the stairs. The kid could get away, and if he does, Vorelle will follow.

Thinking to himself "Yep this is trouble alright."
Cade d20+3=10 Monday August 25th, 2003 10:20:52 PM
Assuming that the others have gone past the tripped kid to hinder his escape to the Above if he escapes Vauhwyt, Cade moves up the stairs only slightly attempting to position himself in a way as to be able to attempt to grapple the boy if he heads back down Below.
If the others have not positioned themselves in front the boy's original path, Cade will move up past the boy and will attempt to grapple with him if he tries to flee past him.
All the while he is keeping an eye on the party's surroundings and onlookers. (Spot check 10)

DM Jan Tuesday August 26th, 2003 1:17:44 AM
The teen knew he was fast. He reckoned once he'd reached the top of the steps, he was free and clear.
However - Olyn sees the lad and alerts Vauhwyt. Thwap - a mighty paw trips the escapee, and he lands heavily on the steps, winded. Rolling over he sees Olyn and Vauhwyt looking down at him. Zayne and Vorelle are closing fast, and Cade is blocking any retreat. "This wasn't worth two coppers!" he squeaks.
Theodore has a good look around to see if the teen has an accomplice. He doesn't spot anything unusual - no skulkers, lurkers or runners, so it appears their runner is the only one.
Two dwarves pass the group and one of them wags a finger. "Take that upstairs," he grumbles.
Meanwhile, Rose makes it to the top of the stairs, which are only another 10 ft away from the group and their captive. Outside is a slight breeze which lifts the fine dirt from the gaps in the cobbled street and dusts the halflings shoes with it. It looks busy - the narrow, tangled streets of the Backstab Quarter are off to the right - the docks are off to the left in the distance. No one up here seems to be giving a darn at what is happening just down the Tower steps. There are no apparent guards up here - yet.

Taking the kid's other arm and hustling him up the stairs, Vauwyt nods at Olyn's words and smiles at the dwarves.
"Let's just the three of us walk friendly-like upstairs for a chat. No harm done, just us three." In this way she hopes to deliver a secret message to her other nearby friends -- "fall back, be discreet." Vauhwyt's Bluff check to deliver this secret message is 16 -- one more than the needed Bluff check under 3.5.
Continuing to speak quietly as she leads the boy and Olyn up stairs and into a quiet corner or alley, Vauhwyt adds, "No reason to panic. Just answer my friend's questions nicely, and we'll make it worth your while."
Theodore Tuesday August 26th, 2003 9:46:11 AM
Pretty much alone, now that everyone else in his group has raced up the stairs after the boy, Theodore decides to stay put so as not to add anymore confusion to the antics going on above him. Besides, there's really very little he can do that the others can't.
So, instead, he sighs deeply and keeps a look out for anyone else paying a little too much interest in their going-ons. The realization of just what he's gotten himself into begins to set in.
"Oh, Theodore," he mutters to himself. "You've gotten yourself into something you might not be able to get back out of."

Cade walks back down the stairs in a relaxed manner, to meet back up with Theodore. To Theodore he says, "Must have been a cutpurse, but I believe the ones he may have attempted to rob have things well in hand. As I was saying about these murals, before all this commotion..." and he continues speaking about the local artwork, attempting to blend Theo and himself back into the crowd. He gestures to Theo and says, "Further up the stairs are some more of these murals, that I would love to show you."
Walking besides Theo, they begin ascending up to the Above, again attempting to distance themselves a little from the group, as so they are not thought to be together. While walking, Cade is secretly keeping and eye (Spot check 20) and an ear (Listen check 13) out to their surroundings.

The captured teen is dazed but wriggling as he is 'escorted' up the final steps and outside by the liontaur and the half elf. All movement stops though at Olyn's mention of 2 gold.
Meanwhile, the others follow discreetly, without a recognisable pattern - Zayne reaches the top, his body language suggesting he's off toward the docks - Vorelle does her best to blend in with the goings on outside - so does the tiny halfling, Rose - Cade continues his well-crafted bluff, attempting to get Theo to stick with him as everyone moves outside. As for Theodore, yep - he can see where this is going, and adrenaline starts to quicken his heart.
Cloak hoods are raised, peace-ties are loosened - for now everyone is ABOVE - outside, and a different set of rules are in operation, here.
For those on the lookout - the outside level of Dirt City offers nothing apart from the usual - that is, folk going quickly about their business, or stood in small groups talking quietly. Vorelle, Rose and Zayne here voices carried from various taverns in the Backstab Quarter.
** Local knowledge - Backstab Quarter - a warren of streets and houses, stores and taverns, sometimes set so close you could almost jump from one bedroom window - across the street to another one. The area appears to have cornered the market in "dark alleys". At one time NO ONE dared go in there unless they were sure they could survive a fight, had protection, or were completely mad. Of course things were different now, as the citizens attempted to make legitimate lives for themselves. Maybe it was working, but there were still rumours...
The teen gives an insolent grin. "Two gold? Hahahahaha, yeah right." He hesitates, twitching. "Two gold eh? Alright - man told me to follow you and then go see him in the Blue Eel. Not gonna tell you more until I get my money."
**Local knowledge - The Blue Eel, its in the Backstab Quarter, run by the Teeth, frequented by seafarers in particular. It doesn't have a particularly bad rep - more of a place where you could meet ships captains and enquire about passage. Oh, and the ale was supposed to be good.
