Setting Out

Malafret : NPC : DM Anthony
Monday June 16th, 2003 8:14:26 PM

Malafret walks into your private session and smiles at you all.

"You have done well and now it is time you understood what we protect and why we do so."

With that she pulls a wooden sphere out of her robes and holds it out.

"This is your coumpus, it has been used for ages, in fact it is the very one I used when I was given this lesson. I give it to you all now for luck."

She smiles again sweetly and then looks about as if tring to find someone not there. Then she begins, her tone changes into her teacher tone and the task is set out.

"You are to go out through the water and gear up, follow the fungus for 98 paces and then turn left and climb, you will come out onto the plains. Should you wish to take Milos boat i will have it there waiting for you, should you choose to treck on foot that is fine too. Once out hold the compus out and turn all the way around. It will grow cold when you are headed in the proper direction. Travel that direction until you come across something . . . odd. An event, something happening. Once ther you are to witness that event and protect it with your lives. These events MUST take place and you MUST witness them. You will understand. You will then rest and set out for the next one on the next morning. Go now and quickly you must make the first one or the rest will be meaningless. Take heed however and pack much water, you will be gone a number of days and you will be alone on the plains."

With that she stands, sets the wooden orb down and leaves calling back over her shoulder.

"If you wish to have Milos boat there leave a note here and I will see to it."

Then she is gone

Milo
Monday June 16th, 2003 10:24:00 PM

standing up when Malafret arrives, Milo bows to her.

listening to her words greatly. Milo listens like a pupil should, and when she leaves he stands up and retrieves the wooden compass. looking it over and rubbing it with both hands he looks up at the group saying: so, we taking my boat or we hoofing it? it's only 8'x12', nothing like the big ships we see running out there.

Flea
Monday June 16th, 2003 10:32:02 PM

Flea stares at the round wooden ball Malafret so recently set on the ground. "A compass. Shady!" she says in a low voice, without touching the device.

Looking up at Trellus, she continues, "Do you think it's magic? Maybe Gilan or Sterlin should carry it?" then she adds "or Anuk?"

As she shoulders her pack, she turns to Milo and asks, "You've got a boat? Like the traders?"

(OOC: Subtracted 65 gp, and a Catacombs voucher equivalent to 45 gp from Flea's money for her contribution to Trellus' shopping for the pack. Flea has 5 gp left.)

Grymash
Monday June 16th, 2003 11:47:17 PM

Grymash checks everything for travel. His new armor is so light, he can easily swim in it. He fills up all four of his waterskins. And he make sure that he prepares several Create Water spells.

Grymash also packs a little food. If they ever are in need of food, the Plains will always provide. Though some of his pack seem to be squeamish when it comes to local fare!!

"Gry think pack should walk if pack can get there on foot. We save boat for big trips. Gry not want boat smashed up on short trip when feet can do job just as good."

However Grymash doesnt want everyone to know that riding on boats, floating on top of the grass, makes him nervious. He preferrs his feet firmly planted on the ground.

Sterlin
Tuesday June 17th, 2003 8:30:10 AM

Sterlin gives his spiders some attention then speaks to the group.
" I don't think we have room for everyone in the boat. Also it may attract attention we don't want. It could also be used for one or two of us to scout from though if we choose. I personally however, prefer walking in the plains. "

Milo
Tuesday June 17th, 2003 11:45:37 AM

my skiff aint 8x12 its 8x4 big enough for 1 person and supplies. (my bad)

anyways, I think it would be a good idea to put extra water jugs on the boat, food and other supplies and to be used for scouting.

Trellus
Tuesday June 17th, 2003 3:02:29 PM

"I'm with Milo. We can pack the boat with extra supplies, use it for scouting, or just tow it along with someone in as a lookout."

"Well, she said 'Go now'. So lets grab our gear and meet down below."

Trellus fills up two waterskins, and leaves for the meeting spot.

Once there, he casts a BULLS STRENGTH spell into the Ioun Stone for Anuk.

Then he loads up, and waits for the others.
Which gives him plenty of time to worry about Malafret's next test.

Anuk
Tuesday June 17th, 2003 6:40:36 PM

Anuk listens carefully to Malafret as she speaks. Knowing that their time is limited, he thinks about how to prepare. He's intrigued by the wooden compass, and spends some time studying it. After looking it over, he says, "I think Sterlin should carry it...he seems to have some kind of connection to the Plains the rest of us don't have."

He listens to the discussion about the boat and says, "I agree with Milo and Trellus...let's use the boat for supplies. I think we should load it up before we go because that'll keep our equipment from getting wet. I also think we need to be kind of subtle about going down to the chamber. I mean, if a bunch of us go swimming in full armor and then don't come back up, that's bound to raise some questions. But if we're just swimming, I don't think anyone will notice if we disappear. I've never noticed it, and it looks like it's been going on for quite a while."

If the rest of the pack agrees to use Milo's boat then Anuk prepares to stow his equipment on the skiff. If they do not agree then he works to waterproof his new bow and arrow as best he can before they go swimming. While he packs, he hands Trellus the ioun stone and watches as he casts bull's strength into it. "Thanks, Trellus. And thank you for teaching me how to use the stone." He turns to the rest of the pack and asks, "Anyone else want to cast any spells into the stone before we go?"

Finally, he finishes his preparations by filling two waterskins and then trying out something he's been putting off for a while...preparing entangle -- his first spell.

Flea  d20+10=29
Tuesday June 17th, 2003 9:44:51 PM

Flea pulls the odd bathing garment from the last adventure out of a side pocket of her pack. "Maybe we can put our packs in a cubby hole on this side, and they will show up underneath...the reverse of when we got out? I would rather gear up in the tunnel, than wait until we find the boat on the plains. Besides, didn't Malafret tell us to go through the water, then gear up?"

Flea will change into her bathing garment, carefully rolling her new armour and stowing it in her pack. On her way to the well she will fill her waterskin from one of the four Rattledam fountains used for drinking water. Upon arriving at the well, the rogue will find (Search=29) the same stone from whence she had retrieved her gear when they had come up through the well the last time. She will expect to find her gear safely behind the stone with the carved "F" when she reaches the tunnels underneath the city.

Gilan
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 2:18:57 AM

Gilan prepares his new stuff for the trip through the water. Glancing to the others he nods as they make some comments. "Let someone else carry the compass...I am not sure I want to responsibility."

He gathers his own swimming trunks and makes it into Milo's house to change. He will leave the shield he got with the boat or send it down to the tunnel to gear up, whichever is appropriate. He will also take the time to cast a barkskin and a cure light wounds into the ioun stone.

"Using the boat for extra supplies would be a great idea...less to carry for us." He moves with the rest to the well and takes a seat on the edge. He waits for a few of the others to disappear down and then when it has been long enough he will dive in himself.

Jake
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 3:38:10 AM

Jake nods at the words, listens to everybody's comments, then heads back to his house to pack. Those crispy ration things that last a hell of a long time, a couple of waterskins, he drops off a few items of equipment he probably won't need, and basically goes through everything. While doing this, he's glad his foster dad is out working but endures an endless stream of abuse from the mother who adopted him...and from his five 'sisters'...
Sighing, he heads out, ignoring it, as usual. To the more fun adventures his group tumbles into..

DM Anthony
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 11:30:13 AM

"all your equipment is in the cavern below ready for you to suit up there, the town frowns on weapons and armor worn inside."

Once there plese tell em how much water you each have and we will begin

Trellus
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 12:53:51 PM

Trellus answers Anuk, "No problem. That spell will last 4 hours. So, as soon as we find the whatever it is, cast it on Gry. I'll cast another on Jacob."

The cleric has 4 full waterskins.

"Between me, Gry, Gilan, and Sterlin, we should be fine with water come tomorrow," he says.

"Last thread on a healing potion," he offers.

Sterlin
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 2:40:26 PM

" I do not mind carrying the compass. I can also help with water. I need a container, but I can produce up to five gallons of water four times a day if I prepare the proper spells. "

Gilan
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 2:56:07 PM

As he converses with the others after they have made it to the caves, he checks back over his supplies. "I have two skins of water myself and have prepared two create water spells incase." He slips into his armor and slips on his pack as he waits for the rest to finish.

Looking back up at the others he shakes his head. "How much extra supplies did we pack on the skiff?"

------------------------------------------------
Spell List

0th: create water-2, guidance, light, mending
1st: cure light wounds-2, entangle, shillelagh
2nd: barkskin-2, summon nature's ally II

Did anyone pick up the Bull's Strength Potion or the Invisibility Potion that I layed out on the stool?? If not then Gilan would have picked them back up...just that they may have served someone else better.

Milo
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 4:26:12 PM

upon the skiff is placed enough food and drink for 10 people for 5 days.

Grymash  d20+2=15 d20-2=18
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 5:52:46 PM

Grymash thinks about something. (Wisdom 15, Intelligence 18, natural 20)

"Hmmmm, I wonder if pack got little medalions made of dat druid wood that boats are made of, then grass open up when pack run through it!! Gry think that GOOD idea!! Medalion repel grass, we run full speed .. yeahh!!"

Flea
Wednesday June 18th, 2003 11:00:12 PM

In the chamber under the city, Flea carefully gears up. She pulls her hair straight back so that it is off her face, and ties it in a short tail with the powder blue silk ribbon. As her eyes become accustomed to the low light, she spies the glowing fungi shaped like double sided arrows that mark the route they are to follow. She stays at the edge of the group peering down the dark tunnel, and gives the full waterskin at her side a pat.

At Gilan's query, Flea pipes up: "I'll hold on to that potion of invisibility, if you want?" In the dim light of the tunnel, and with her new armor, all the druid will be able to see is the white gleam of her teeth when she gives him a big grin!

Grymash  d20+5=18
Thursday June 19th, 2003 7:52:39 AM

Grymash gathers up his daggers, bow and arrows and puts them into a bag and ties off the top. His armor is glamoured to look like swimming trunks and a shirt. He swims down to the caves with relative ease ( Swim check 18 - 6= 12) even with the extra weight.

Once down, Grymash opens the compartment that is marked with an "eye" and begins equiping all his items.

"Gry still have suit of breast plate if anyone need." He sits down and waits for the others. He takes out his whetstone and begins to sharpen his double axe. Little sparks fly off the sharpened axe heads with every pass of the stone.

(Grymash has 4 waterskins of water.)

Milo
Thursday June 19th, 2003 8:40:21 AM

like everyone else, he swims down to the secret place and retrieves his items.

using the new gift taught by Malafret, he sends a magic tickle to the fungus arrows and follows them until he is out in the grass.

detemining where it comes out, and where the city is, he goes back to the docks at the safest way possible and retrieves his skiff. making sure all the provisions are there including the water barrels. topping them off he glides his vessel over to where the group will be coming out and waits for them.

DM Anthony (Please place how much water you carry here)
Thursday June 19th, 2003 11:18:02 AM

As you all prepare you all rember that here in this place create water spells seem to aonly create 1/2 of what they should and if you create it out in the open it acracts ALOT of . . . things. However Milo with his boat full of provisions should help. As you suit up and look at one another you get the feeling like this will be your most difficult lesson yet. Go and witness events? what events? Protect them with your lives? Why? What is going on here. A few weeks ago you lived in a strange town with a huge grass dome all the way over it that didnt want you talking about the outside and now you live in a place full of secrects where no one knows you now work for a secrect society know as the second circle. Sometimes life is a bit confusing.

Following the fungus and Malafrets directions you find your self outside about 600 yards from town. Milos boat is tied up here. The grasses have been cut low and woven over to hide this place, and Milo's boat sits outside it. It is full of stuff and ready to go. It will be easy to pull it along under the grass provided the grass dosent get too high and the 20 feet of rope atatched to it is long enough when it does. However it will be like a moving bouy showing everyone above that someone is below, and with you all below pulling, how will you all know that some one has seen you?

The compus is cold the second you get outside and by playing around with it a bit you easily can tell the direction it wishes you to go, for when you hold it out in the right direction it gets suddenly bitter cold and when it is pointing the wrong way it is simply cool. You need to go north east.

Anuk (2 full waterskins)  d20+6=9 d20+6=21
Thursday June 19th, 2003 11:57:16 AM

Anuk makes his way down through the water and into the grotto. He finds the rock he inscribed with the gloved hand, dries off, and gathers all his equipment. After gearing up he tickles the fungus and follows the arrows until he arrives with the others at the secret entrance on the plains. The heat of the day already bears down on him, a sharp contrast to the cool of the water and the caves.

Anuk quickly scans the area looking for signs of anyone watching or following them, but the sudden change from dark to light takes its toll on his vision (spot 9). When Sterlin tells them which direction they need to go, Anuk marks it to be sure he is able to stay on track once he's in the grass (intuit direction 21).

(ooc: Sorry about not posting yesterday. Got a house full of sick kids and parents.)

Trellus (4 waterskins)
Thursday June 19th, 2003 2:56:55 PM

Trellus looks around as Sterlin gets oriented with the compass.

It IS a lot easier to move around in this armor , he notes with satisfaction.

Once they figure out where they're going, Trellus falls into line.
"Gry, will you and Sterlin take the lead again?" he asks.
"And if the Grass gets deep, we'll need someone to ride up top to warn us if something's coming. Someone who can get down in a hurry, too." Trellus grins wryly, "Which leaves me out."

It's common knowledge among the Blood Pack that Trellus has all the quickness of a prarie pig.

Jake
Thursday June 19th, 2003 4:31:22 PM

Jake shrugs his head. "Ah dunno, brothahs...and sistah." He takes a sip of glass grass, pondering. "It seems that our brotha Anuk should take tha front... ah'll covah the back. We know a bit about these plains natcha, and can spot tracks an' all."

Grymash (4 waterskins)  d20+8=18
Thursday June 19th, 2003 5:05:21 PM

Grymash adjusts the steel grass helmet. Its so light, he isnt sure if its on or off. He decides to glamour it into a wrap to better insulate his head and face from the heat (Arabian style). He gives the same treatment to the rest of the breastplate, along with giving it a light color to better reflect the hot beams of light that cut through the grass. (Wilderness Lore 18 to get it right)

"Grymash take front. Who count paces? Me try not walk too fast for pack. Gry think Milo be on his boat. We catch him if he need down fast. Milo know how boat works too!"

Grymash satisfied with his suggestions takes his place at the front. "Ohh yeah ... it be shady if one of you weave barkskin on Gry when trouble happen."

If the pack is ready will go Grymash will start walking in the direction they direct.

Flea (1 full waterskin)
Thursday June 19th, 2003 10:40:54 PM

Flea emerges from the shadows of the tunnel into the bright sunlight of the Plains along with the rest of the pack. While the group figures out the best formation for their route, she watches as two wasps dance on the almost imperceptible breeze.

"About this event we are to witness....should we approach openly, or remain hidden?" she asks of the others.

As they strike out, Flea takes up a place near the front, prepared to reconnaissance ahead of the group, if required.

Gilan(2 waterskins)  d20+4=5 d20+4=14
Thursday June 19th, 2003 11:29:39 PM

Gilan hands over the potion of invisibility to Flea and then makes his way out of the cave. "You might have a use for this." He stops to let his eyes adjust to the sudden brightness and then stretches. It is good to be back on the plains. He watches as his two wasps flit around, the newest one taking in a new bunch of sites.

He looks to the rest as they make some decision on marching order. "I will take the back, as I can travel more freely through the grass." He checks the pull on his scimitar to make sure it will pull with ease and then checks the feel of his shield to make sure it will swing freely into his hand. "Anuk should travel behind Grymash so that he can make sutle adjustments to our heading."

The question of announcing themselves or hiding upon finding the event gives him some pause. "Maybe we should make that decision once we see what the event is."

[listen: 5, spot: 14]

Milo : 3 Barrels of Water and 6 Waterskins on skiff :
Friday June 20th, 2003 12:42:01 AM

handing the rope to the skiff to Grymash, he says: perhaps you should be the one to pull this. with enough provisions for all of us for 5 days and the extra water, it will probably take someone of your strength to pull it.

Jake (5 waterskins, 4 days rations)
Friday June 20th, 2003 6:27:40 AM

Jake dislikes how he seems to slosh every step of the way, so he leaves a few things behind. Reluctantly, he puts his crossbow and the bolts with it down. Figuring Milo will have plenty of cooking equipment, he leaves his various fire-making gear as well as his iron pot. His gear lighter, he slings on the waterskins, and finds it noticeable, but not as heavy...
(Just had to alter my inventory...sigh. Who needs fishhooks in the plains?? :P)

Sterlin (1 waterskin)
Friday June 20th, 2003 9:02:20 AM

" O.k., I have only basic supplies. The plains provide if you know where to look. I will also memorize some water magic, but we will have to be very very careful when useing it. We all know dangerous things smell water for miles. "

DM Anthony
Friday June 20th, 2003 10:19:59 AM

Anuk casting about looking sees no one anywhere near.

Then as you begin to pull the boat behind you the grass quickly rises up to 10 feet plus. It fast becomes impossible to see more that 12 feet or so in any direction except up. The heat begins quickly and as you sweat no brezze cabn reach you to cool you however the stalks of grass you brush up against seem to soak up your sweat and carry it away from you folling your body into sweating more. The water will go fast at this rate. Who ever has the orb should be leading as they know the direction you are headed in.

Sterlin
Saturday June 21st, 2003 10:44:47 AM

Sterlin walks carefully in the lead holding the compass and following in the direction that it indicates by changeing temperatures.

Milo  d20+6=18

sitting on the skiff he pulls the canopy up giving him some shade and then pulls out a a small square piece of leather. rolling it up and placing a round piece of glass at one end and a smaller piece at the other, he fastens the leather together and then places the small end to his eyes and starts looking around.

Anuk
Sunday June 22nd, 2003 4:19:23 PM

Anuk takes a place near Sterlin and follows along through the hot grasses. "So...any guesses as to what we're looking for? Whatever it is, I hope it makes a lot of shade."

Flea  d20+10=21 d20+6=20 d20+8=10
Sunday June 22nd, 2003 7:18:35 PM

Flea searches actively for anything out of the ordinary (Search=21) that might signify the event they are to witness, all the while keeping her eyes open for anything that might be waiting in ambush (Spot=20). Since she can only look through the grasses, and straight overhead (the grass being too tall to look over top) she keeps her ears trained for unusual sounds (Listen=10), but the gnome can only hear the whispering of the grasses, and the light chinking and clinking sounds of armor and weapons as pack silently follow Sterlin and the compass.

Gilan  d20+4=22
Sunday June 22nd, 2003 11:45:35 PM

Gilan follows along after the others, keeping up his duty as rear-guard. With a set of light whistles he sends his two wasps off into the group to do a little scouting of thier own and report back to him every thousand buzzes.

His ears pick up many things out in the grass and he concentrates to focus on anything that is out of the ordinary in the grass.

[listen: 22]
[another opening for Carla with the wasps]

Trellus
Monday June 23rd, 2003 8:02:35 AM

Trellus trudges along in the middle of the pack, taking rationed sips of water and occasionally glancing up at the boat to make sure Milo is OK.

I wonder if I've a spell to shade this heat , he idly wonders.

He spends the time mentally running through spells as he follows his packmates.

Jake  d20+1=11
Monday June 23rd, 2003 5:49:52 PM

The stoic half-elf keeps up with everyone else easily, his long stride forcing him to take shorter steps as he walks behind the halfling. He keeps his ears peeled. (dc 11)

DM Anthony
Monday June 23rd, 2003 9:42:21 PM

The treck is long and hard, many bugs, many rest stops. The boat getting heavier every step. Its about an hour from dusk when Milo spots something ahead. the grass seems to have been trampled or shortened in a wide wid circle about 200 yards ahead.

Milo
Monday June 23rd, 2003 9:46:57 PM

Signaling down below he gets Grymash to stop. dropping a rope ladder over the side he climbs down and with everyone present he describes what he sees.

Flea
Monday June 23rd, 2003 11:49:00 PM

When Milo reports what he has seen, Flea whispers: "Do we want to advertise our approach, or sneak up and investigate?" She goes on to volunteer "When we get a little closer, I can go ahead to scout, taking a route parallel to this path and ahead of the group. I can report back if I see anything unusual." As an afterthought, she adds: "If the grass isn't too thick, maybe we should all fan out a bit, rather than approach in single file?"

Tiev and Zilia  d20+9=23 d20+9=10
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 12:16:28 AM

The sun glints off the wings of the wasps as they fly ahead of the druid and the pack. At ease in the familiar environment, Tiev performs an aerial survey (Spot=23) while the smaller Zilia tries to keep up (Spot=10).

They will report back to Gilan, if they see anything of interest.

Jake
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 4:41:25 AM

Jake silently draws his sword and readies his shield. Anytime something unusual happens, it doesn't hurt to have things ready, he thinks to himself. He watches the others with his cat-like eyes...

Trellus  d4+1=2
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 10:26:00 AM

Trellus listens to Milo's report,

"Well, its about time," he says quietly. Sweat is dripping off the young man's face, and he is eagerly anticipating the cooler temperatures of nightfall.

"Anuk, I think its time to hit Gry with that strength spell."

Trellus steps over to Jacob, and goes through his own incantation to strengthen the warrior's limbs.
(Bulls Strength = +2 Str)

"Flea's ideas sound shady to me," he replies. "She can scout ahead and let us know what's weaving. We should probably stick close though, no more than three columns."

"Should we leave the boat here, or try to pull it under the grass, or something to keep it out of sight?"

Grymash (protection from evil)  d20+8=20
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 12:29:13 PM

Grymash casts Protection from Evil spell on himself after hearing Milo's report. He then checks the winds to determine if they are up or down wind (Wilderness Lore 20).

In a low voice, "Gry try to figure out which way wind blow. They maybe smell us get close. If pack down wind, pack need Pass without Trace weaved on us. Pack smell no more! One of you druids have Barkskin ready for Gry."

Gilan[barkskin](Armor Class: 21)
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 3:30:53 PM

Gilan stops with the rest and moves forward slowly to stand with the others. He listens to them as they talk and nods in agreement with some of the ideas. "I would have to agree that the skiff is going to be a liability at this time."

Looking around he thinks on things a little. "So lets break into three small groups with a fighter in each at least...maybe moving in towards the clearing about five feet apart, like Trellus suggested." He glances to the rest and waits to see what they think. "Lets do some buffing of our group and see what we see." He pulls out his scimitar and slips his shield of his back, readying himself for battle.

[casts barkskin on Grymash and then himself: +3AC]

Anuk  d20+6=21 d20+2=22 d20+6=18
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 3:34:55 PM

"Good idea, Trellus," says Anuk. He reaches into his cloak to retrieve the purple stone, turns to face Grymash, and casts the spell on him (bulls strength).

He turns again and faces the direction they're headed to make sure he knows which way to go should the pack become separated (intuit direction 21). "I'll lead a column. Anyone who wishes can come with me." With that, he moves off 15 feet to the left of the group, listening and watching for anything unusual. (listen 22 - natural 20! spot 18)

Milo
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 3:54:24 PM

Casts Mage Armor on himself.

Sterlin
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 10:19:22 PM

Sterlin watches ahead quietly, wondering what they are about to witness.

Flea  d20+23=36 d20+6=26
Tuesday June 24th, 2003 11:35:59 PM

The rogue scouts about 40ft ahead of the pack and slightly left of center. She stops where the grasses start to thin out, staying just back from the flattened area, invisible in the shadows of the taller grass (Hide=36). If there is anything out there, Flea is determined to find it(Spot=26, nat. 20!)and report back to the pack.

Jake
Wednesday June 25th, 2003 4:34:45 AM

Jake just stands ready, watching. He nods in response to the spell, and suspects that whatever's going to happen will take all of his skill...in his mind, he goes over a few practice battle tactics.

Trellus
Wednesday June 25th, 2003 10:12:55 AM

"Flea, wait a sec," Trellus whispers.

He quickly steps over to the small rogue and lays a hand on the top of her head.
"Domi protect you", he intones.

(Domain power Protective Ward - +4 bonus to Flea's next save roll. Lasts for one hour or until used).

Then, Flea scampers ahead to scout.

Milo
Thursday June 26th, 2003 6:11:39 PM

sits on the ground, playing with a stalk of grass, lounging around while he waits for the God to tell him what he sees next.

Dm Anthony
Friday June 27th, 2003 10:30:26 AM

As you all approach the strange clearing you quickly see the largest group of prarrie pigs you have ever seen and for some reasone they are not eating in the random lines that they normaly do but into a large circle, clearing the grass almost down to the ground. Having seen farmers try to clear cut the grass before you notice another strange thing. Teh grass isnt pushing back. Normaly when something like this happens the grass tries to force its way back in, fast as if by magic, but not now. In fact the grass seems to be allowing this to happen, then scanning the clearing you notice another strange thing. Some of the prarrie pigs are in large coccons, others are halfway through making a coccon. The ones in the spun coccons look like large rocks and the others look like half rock and half pig.... It is a most unusual thing....could this be it? the first event? wna what are you to whitness? Protect what?

Flea remembers her first encounters with prairie pigs and the ranchers who seemed to farm them. She looks about quickly (Spot 11) to see if someone or something is 'cultivating' the animals, before returning to the pack to recount the odd sight of the cocooning rock-pigs and the bizarre clearing they are creating in the grass. Despite her excitement, she is very quiet (Move Silently=31, nat. 20!), and at all time remains hidden (Hide=36) from view.

Anuk stares into the clearing, fascinated by the behavior of the prairie pigs. He makes mental notes of the sizes, shapes, and colors of the various cocoons and wonders if this is something they do on their own, or if they are being guided.

He looks across the opening, listening and searching for anything he might "protect". (spot 14, listen 14)

"Sterlin, if YOU don't know....." he says quietly, letting the rest trail off.

Trellus keeps his eyes on the grass, and waits for Flea's return.

taking the rope from Grymash, Milo ties off the skiff securely. then he goes up to the nearest Praire Pig, and pulling out his speak with animals potion, he drinks it waiting for the effects to work.

Dm Anthony
Monday June 30th, 2003 10:21:33 AM

Its hard to stay hidden when you have a large skiff bobbing up and down on the grass anouncing your presence to all who wish to see it.

The Pigs seem completely wild, in fack some of you having seen domesticated pigs instantly can see the diffrences. Domesticated ones are all one color, smooth and clear as their color changes the flavor of their meet, however these are mottled and all diffrent. Dosmesticated ones wave smaller feeding pads under them and their eye stalks are shorter, and domseticated ones would be moving toward you in hopes of a treat as these, those that can anyway move away.

Milos potion while inefective reveals something quite important to the small man. Prarrie Pigs are not animals.

Gilan watches in some amazement as the pigs go about cocooning themselves. Looking to the others he shrugs and goes back to watching. "Do you think maybe we are to protect as many of these as we can....from themselves or something else?"

Seeing that Milo has already slipped out into the clearing area, he looks back and sighs. That floating skiff is not going to allow them to hide that is for sure. "Guys...I think we are going to have a hard time hiding." He steps out on the edge of the clearing and casts around for anything.

She feels brimming with courage and is much obliged to the cleric for his blessing.

Fearing some sort of a trap, the rogue strings her bow, and selects a red fletched arrow quiver on her back.

"Let's close in on those cocoons, so we're close in case anything comes out of the Grass."

Trellus moves out into the circle, carefully not stepping on any pigs, until he's some 60' from the cocoons. Then, he waits.

"We can't hurt these cocoons," he states. Then, he tilts his head slightly, as a thought strikes.

"I hope whatever comes out of those things feels the same way about us."

Gilan also moves in to take up a position of protection. His scimitar and shield are both at hand, but he shakes his head some. So many strange things have been happening lately.

He looks to Milo and nods about his comment. "That is a good thought." With a start he cannot help but wonder who he will have to protect. "We may even have to protect those that have not cocooned from whatever comes out of those that have...or the other way around."

He swallows hard as he divides his attention between the cocoons and the prairie pigs. "Malafret said that this event must happen but that we must protect it at all costs...so maybe a little warning of possible outside danger would not hurt."

As the pack sits near the cocooned pigs they can feel heat coming off of them, and something moving inside them. Watching the bounders rush into the clearing everyone begins to notice soething by watching them, they dont move in formation like the ones you have fought in the past but more importantly there is something about teir eyes. A wild untamed look. In fact its almost as if they were a pack of wolves or something. They are not intent on killing the pigs but in eating them.

Gry charges 100 yards across the clearing and smashes his axe into the first bounder. Once he is there you can see that these bounders are smaller than the ones your used to as well. However there are a bunch of them. Some vear off looking frightened of the half orc to try and eat other pigs in the clearing but quite a few seem to think he would make a better meal than the pigs and they surround him quickly.

One of the half cocconed pigs across the way is found by the bounders and a frighting thing happens. The Bounder sniffs at the thing and then gives a howl of fury and pounces on it, not eating it but ripping it to shreads. When he is done there is nothing left but pulp, then turning the Bounder urinates on the remains.

The group and Gry are 100 yards apart.

Gry has 6 Bounders surrounding him, another 8 or 10 are in the clearing.

As the entangle spell goes off you can all hear the growling and snapping of entrapt bounders.

Jake looks somewhat befuddledly at the Bounders. He was standing next to his cocoon, waiting for one to come close. And none did. How disappointing! And yet Grymash charged forward anyways...is he crazy? Doesn't he realize there's at least a dozen bounders! What a time to leave his crossbow back at home!!!
The Bounder's reaction to the half-cocooned prairie pig is even more bizarre. In fact...watching it, Jake searches himself, trying to figure out if this is something natural, or something inhuman...but can't seem to find a gut feeling on which to settle that action. (Wilderness Lore check of 7 :P)
No matter what, though, Jake says to himself that at least one coccoon should survive. He examines his.
(Anthony, is the coccoon with the prairie pig in it movable? That is, could I carry or put it in the skiff, without damaging it? Or does it seem anchored to the ground, and easily damageable? I used my Animal Empathy skill to figure out if it is.. DC 17. (my wilderness lore with the same roll would be DC 18)).
In any case, this round, Jake merely guards his one coccoon, and moves between any bounder getting even close to it. If they get too close, he also tries shouting at it....

Having earlier made plans to work in concert with the brave ranger during combat situations, Flea takes off at a run (4 x 20ft), but stays close to the perimeter of the clearing in order to take advantage of the shadows cast by the taller grasses. She takes another red-fletched arrow from her quiver as she tries to make a mental note of the number of cocoons and their placement (Search=24)

"Domi's LIGHT! Of all the sunbaked, treadle headed...." Trellus trails off with an exasperated exhale.

The cleric takes stock. Gry is really far away, and surrounded, Anuk's going after him, got no idea where in the Grass Flea is, and Milo's up on the boat.
Which leaves four of us here, plus Milo up high to watch these things...Domi take you Gry, that was really stupid.

In an attempt to get the raging half orc to work his way back, Trellus yells "Gry! Help! We're in trouble!"

If he can do it without getting cut off by any bounders, Trellus moves out 60' with Anuk to help defend him. The cleric keeps a wary eye for the bounders however, and will not risk any of them getting between him and the cocoons.

He then seems to notice the Coccons and barks a loud sound and those bounders not busy with Gry begin leaping toward you all.

Milo from high on his perch tags a bounder with a magic missile.

Trellus misses the bounder and then re-joins the others around the coccon.

Grymash strikes a bounder and then retreats back to the coccons as well. His intimidation check seems to be in effective, in fact he notices something about the eyes of these bound3ers, the way they move. They seem like wild animals, not the inteligent killing machiens you fought before.

Milo casts glitter dust which slows the bounders down but dosent seem to effect them as a whole. However it looks as if he bought more time before the pack is surrounded.

Gilan uses his hit when ihe is approached and it is a good hit but dosent seem to be critical....

Sterlin casting entangle seems to be inefective too however it and the glitter dust spell buy the party one more round to prepare before they are surrounded.

Flea's arrow misses and she realizes that if she dosent want to get caught out side the circle of protection of the coccons and her pack mates she had better get back there quick.

Jake strikes the bounder killing it and struggles to think......

Anuk looks about to see if anyone saw that....

The bounders cant close this round due to the exellent spell casting.

"Keep in front of the cocoons, dudes!"

Trellus turns and casts a spell which detonates in a concussive burst amongst the three approaching bounders. He centers his spell to catch two of them in the 10' radius without also catching Grymash.

Gilan takes the time to glance at Jake and laughs. "I doubt that Tiev can carry a gourd of water by himself and Zilia is still too little for that...she will make a fine scout though." He watches as their combined attacks takes down one of the bounders and laughs again. "Well...one down and many to go...we should use this tactic more often Jake."

Glancing to see how the others are doing he is happy to note that they have pulled back to cover the cocoons. The fact that they have slowed them down as well is a welcome sight. "Lets hope our luck holds."

As another bounder moves in he brings his scimitar in a crossways slashing motion, that allows for Jake to attack from the other side with no interference from him.

The rogue realizes she may have been a little overconfident in her new armour and the added protection provided by the cleric's spell. She feels a little vulnerable away from the group. so she sneaks back(Hide=30)to be near the pack and the 3 remaining cocoons. She sets herself up in a position to surprise any unsuspecting bounder and looses another red fletched arrow, noting how true their shafts are. Flea thinks to herself, I really must thank Gillan for these nice arrows. (Hit=AC 25, damage=11)

As he's shouting this without a hint of his customary drawl, Jake mirrors Gilan in sliding to the unprotected side of the Bounder and flanking it, and gives another wild, but powerful swing into its side. He's confident in his group's ability to stop the other two bounders momentarily...

Flea's arrow slices through the air into the leg of one of the Bounders. Simultaneously, Trellus finishes his spell with a spectacular cone of twirling, pure sonic force that sends rippling waves through the grass and impacts the bounders fully, and leaves one of them stunned. As the grass folds back into place slowly, webs materialize over the area, forming a quite physical barrier to the coccoons.
Gilan and Jake wait for their bounder to approach, ready to flank it on either side, while Anuk stands to the side guarding Flea and the second coccoons. Grymash stands by himself, twirling his orcan double-ax, somehow raging and yet not charging mindlessly into battle...in fact...he's amazingly clear-headed for a person frothing at the mouth... Must be all those lessons from the monks.

ADM Mikey - Bounder's
Friday July 11th, 2003 6:44:58 AM

You are all conscious of the wild bounders feasting upon the prairie pigs in the background. Many have now stopped and are feasting like wolves in packs.

The three that were originally charging you are daunted by the web barrier and the strange screaming that comes from behind it. Still, they probably can see or smell you. One, stunned by the sound, rolls on the ground attempting to dispel its vertigo. The two others growl impatiently with hunger and sniff at the webs, seeking to bypass them. One begins pacing towards the west side of them, impatient to feast on what lays beyond. The other, having an arrow in its side causing it pain, whines annoyedly as it begins pushing its way through the webs, tearing them with its formidable strength. They are even closer, and yet you have slowed them down even longer.

Meanwhile, more wild bounders move up in groups seeking to feed their insatiable appetites. None of these are an immediate threat, but soon they could be...

The group, with the exception of Milo, stands before the coccoons, weapons at ready for the charging Bounders.
The bounders in the background move forward. In the pack of five, three race each other in an attempt to claim a prairie pig. The greedy middle one chomps onto it, while the other two look around for more pray. Grymash, roaring nearby, is an obvious target (for next round). The other two trudge along west, looking for targets.
The first bounder scurts around the web and charges at the smallest group member close to it: Flea. Luckily, the magic of the circle protects her from its gnashing jaws (AC 16). Also, due to its charging, it's a bit off balance. (-2 to its AC)
The second bounder screeches and strains at the webs, but in doing so twists himself further into a heap. He makes absolutely no progress this round.
The third bounder follows after its packmate around the web to the west.

[Flea, since you had an action readied and you were attacked, you get an attack on that bounder. Anuk, although you don't get an attack (since the creature had reach due to its size) you can choose to be flanking it. (This will also affect Flea's opportunity to sneak attack) No bounders came within 5 feet of other characters this round, so no other held actions can be made.]
[Other things: Since it's round 6, any spells or effects (raging, bless, protection spells)started at the beginning of combat might be ending soon... (10 rounds = 1 minute) Keep this in mind.]

Looking for an opportunity to attack, he shouts at the creature to get its attention away from Flea, "C'mon you sunbaked pig-eater! You think she'd make a tasty morsel? Why don't you try takin' a bite outta me?!!"

(OOC: I thought Anth said these bounders were much smaller than the ones we had encountered before. Do they still have the over-sized reach? BTW, thanks for filling in!)

Flea's slash causes a spectacular gush of blood. Milo's missiles slam into the Bounder with concussive force.
(Diagram to be mailed soon...)
Bounder #1 (Which Flea and Anuk are flanking) screeches in pain from Flea's slash, and instictively tries to bite the halfling back, ignoring the large target Anuk due to self-preservation. It manages to scrape the nimble halfling with a claw. (8 damage)
Bounder #2 (in the web) tears its way farther through the web. It's more than halfway through.
Bounder #3 follows after its packmate (#1) around the web. Not understanding whatever threw the stinging missiles into it, it charges at the obvious target of the yelling man, Anuk. It manages to tear into him with a vicious bite with its charge. (-2 to its AC from its charge, it did 7 damage to Anuk).
Two bounders charge Grymash (#4+5). Their formidable teeth bounce off his shiny new breastplate and the field of protection around them all.
One of the other bounders contents itself with a prairie pig. Another one (#6) charges straight at Gilan, and chomps on him viciously. (9 damage)

The rogue sidesteps the bounder to keep herself between it and the cocoon behind her, while trapping the creature between herself and Anuk. As Milo's projectiles slam into the bounder (#3) that is menacing the ranger, Flea slices at the bounder (#1) in front of her, once again, then darts quickly out of it's way.

Flea and Anuk use a bit of teamwork, the halfling slashing deeply into the bounder (#1) while Anuk hacks into it (using his earlier attack). It brays uncertainly, wounded severely (25 damage to it so far) but still standing. Anuk, then using his attack for that round (sorry about this mistake), swings but misses the bounder attacking him (#3), but Milo's missiles slam into it with great force. (17 damage to it so far)

Sterlin, Gilan, and Jake team up on one Bounder (#6), and the combination of garden utensils, curved blades, and bastard sword reduce the creature's hunger noticeably. (28 damage will do that to anything)

Grymash causes chunks of Bounder #4 to go all over the place in his massive attack. (30 damage)
Four of the six bounders appear massively hurt, and it appears that none of the other bounders have taken interest in you yet.
Meanwhile, behind you, the coccoons pulse and you can feel something happening...!

Monster's actions:
A huge bounder eats Milo.
Bounder one, still quite hungry and enraged, attempts to chomp down on some Flea and is nearly successful. (16 damage! Ouch!)
Bounder #2 progresses to the edge of the webs, but is unable to move anymore.
Bounder #3 claws twice at Anuk and rakes him once with its paws for 8 more damage.
Bounder #4 turns tail and runs, yipping. If Grymash desires, he can have a free attack of opportunity.
Bounder #5 bites into Grymash's shoulder for 12 damage.
Bounder #6, though rather wounded and surrounded on three sides, attempts to go after Sterlin. It tries to claw twice. One claw batters Sterlin for 7 damage.

(It's now round 9. From an ADM standpoint, I hope I'm not being too hard. You have done lots of damage to these creatures, and many are really wounded, even as they've done some damage to you. From a player's standpoint, man, this ADM is a jerkface! j/k :) )

Flea stares in wonder at the horrifically carved up beast in front of her, and gapes in disbelief as it remains standing. When it turns on her, she is taken by surprise, and her eyes grow wide with the shock of the wrenching pain as the beast makes it attack on her. In a stupor, she makes a feeble move to keep the bounder (#1) between the ranger and herself while making a weak stab at the beast. Dizzy from loss of blood, she is unsure if she connects with her target.

Reeling and in shock from her injuries, Flea backs away from the bounder. Suddenly, she is infused by a feeling of hope and her vision clears. She watches in awe as her wounds seal themselves, and she feels a burst of energy soar through her small body. Looking over her shoulder, she sees the cleric, Trellus, and understands.

The rogue stands firm, her shortsword ready, should the creature attempt another attack.

Flea keeps the Bounder #1 distracted while Anuk quite capably chops its back into pieces. It falls to the ground, bleeding to death.
Grymash tears into the fleeing bounder #4, killing it, and then whirls onto bounder #5, slaughtering it in a brutal display of bloodlust.
Jake takes a few steps and hacks into the back of the creature who bit Anuk (#3). With a grunt and a ferocious swing (power attack-5) he hacks into it, using his sword much like an axe by this point.
Only two bounders remain attacking the guys. The one facing Sterlin and Jake decides now might be a time to run away, and takes off at full speed. The one who just got out of the webs starts tearing back through them to get away.

ANTHONYS ADDITION:::: It seems as if by suddenly decidin to flea, as all of them do that they gain speed and power. Turning tail and leaping off over and through the grass the wild bounders dissapear and disolve into the grass. It was clear that unlike any you have faced before these semed less inteligent less manevolent. They seemed if anything as a hungry pack of wolves. the clearing is silent as the sun prepares to slip below the horizion.

As the bounders seem to be leaving, Trellus switches wands and taps Anuk. Healing flows into the ranger (Cure Moderate Wounds - 8 hp).

"Stay close to the cocoons," he calls, watching the last bounder try to get away. Then he notices the activity inside the cocoons and hastily adds, "but not too close."

"Whoever's got healing wands start weaving with 'em."

Only then does the cleric realize Milo, and the boat(OOC yes/no?), are gone.
"Milo? MILO! Where are you Milo?"

"Gry," no, he's coming down from his frenzy "Uh...Jake, come help me look for Milo."

Trellus trots off to where the boat and halfling should be, frantically looking for signs of his friend.

Gilan looks around at the arnage around them and shakes his head. The wound he had received earlier is starting to clot over and he makes his way to Sterlin. "Here...let me help out with that." He casts cure light wounds first on Sterlin (7hp) and then on himself (10hp). He sends a silent prayer to nature for the power to aid his pack.

Turning now that most of the danger is past, he watches the cocoons with interest. "I believe that we are about to witness something that few would ever get the chance to see." With that he falls silent and watch the happenings before them. That was what Malafret had said they were to do...protect and witness the event.

Bloodspattered and weary, the rogue moves towards Anuk, still holding her shortsword in her hand. "You okay, ranger?" she asks the wounded man. Just then, Trellus comes by, and works his healing magic on Anuk.

As Trellus starts calling for Milo, Flea speaks up, "It's no use, cleric...Milo's gone!"

The nervous rogue listens (Listen=16)for any sound besides the drone of the pulsing cocoons, while she scans the clearing for any new enemies (Search=18). She holds her shortsword in her hand, turning it nervously until she has a comfortable grip.

Then he addresses Flea with a wink, "I guess the "dance" didn't work quite as well as I was expecting. Still, I think with a little practice, we can perfect it. Are you okay?"

Seeing the others look for Milo, he sheaths his swords and slowly searches the area looking for any sign of the halfling, but finds nothing conclusive.

"I can't believe it...he's just gone."

The boat still casts its shadow over the battlefield but Milo is gone..... however thoughts quickly change as the coccons begin to shake and shiver. Suddenly bursting outward from the coccon comes a claw, then a shoulder, then a great head. Emerging from first one, and then the other, and finnnaly the third burst small Bounders. Falling from the shell one of them lifts its large head to the sky and howls. The howl is answered off toward where the others had runn off to. The small ones begin to try and crawl about searching for food as the sounds of the pack returning come to your ears. Best to get up on the boat or get out of here quick. The globe has begun to indicate that a new event must be travled to.

Gilan
Tuesday July 22nd, 2003 5:59:08 PM

He gaps in amazement as the cocoons burst open to reveal...bounders. He glances around to the others and then shivers when he hears the first bounder howl. The answering return howl is even worse as he realizes that the ones they had just fought are coming back. "Well poeple...do we take refuge on the skiff or get the heck out of here?"

Assessing the situation he takes in the skiff and shakes his head. "We will not get too far dragging that along and we should not leave it behind." With a last minute thought he yells to each of the others. "To the skiff...we can make a stand there back to back." Glancing around again he shakes his head again. "What about the next event...what direction...maybe we should move out and take the boat...though I hate to have these bounders chasing us."

Sterlin
Tuesday July 22nd, 2003 7:51:30 PM

Bounders are not at all what Sterlin expected, but it does make sense he thinks to protect all beasts of the plains.

"Thanks for the healing Gilan. We should grab the skiff and head away from this place. Lets head out opposite the direction the bounders are coming from for a bit and then we will move quickly in the direction this compass guides."

Anuk
Tuesday July 22nd, 2003 9:15:00 PM

Anuk readies his bow. He looks over the scene trying to make sense of what they just witnessed and fought for. He shakes his head, hoping that understanding will eventually come. With a nod toward the oncoming bounders he says, "I'm with Sterlin...let's grab the boat and get away from them before we head to the next event."

The fact that the Pack has no time dawns quickly on Trellus. The cleric pushes his emotions down (but they'll be back), and concentrates on the task at hand.

"Sterlin's plan sounds good. Time to speed up the loom and get out, dudes."

Trellus joins the group in grabbing the skiffs rope and heading away from the bounders. Along the way, he taps Grymash with his healing wand (Cure Moderate Wounds - 16 hp).

Once they're more or less safely out of the bounders way, he turns to Sterlin.

"Prarie pigs are Bounder babies. Well, that's quite a twist in the thread, ain't it?"

"Which way do we go now?"

Jake
Wednesday July 23rd, 2003 12:09:49 AM

Jake mumbles to nobody in particularly as he hustles along with the others, easily keeping up. "No kiddin'. Never knew where them things came from...bounders, that is. Ah know them prairie pigs seem ta come from nowhere...heck, never seems to run out of 'em, some places. Ah guess that makes sense." He falls silent, thinking that he'll never taste Milo's cookies again...and...why, that wasn't shady at all. Well, that's that... "Tha way of tha plains..."

Getting up on the skiff sees a good idea as the party scampers up the first of the beaten bounders re-apear, they seem cautious and careful untill they see the smaller bounders. Then giving a bark of what must mean joy they leap to the small ones and take them protectively into the pack. But then why did they wish with all intent to destroy the coccons earlier? This makes no sense.

Sterlin consentrating upon the sphere can tell the next event is to the Nort East and the sun will be gone in about 10 minutes. You will all have to camp upon the plains this evening. Not a pleasant thought, however it must be done and quickly if you want enough light to make preperations.

While the others continue the discussion, Anuk scans the horizon looking for low points in the grass where they can maneuver the boat down (search 4 - bleah). Trellus will use his feat of strength to pull the boat down below the level of the tall Grass.(STR check 18. Grymash is helping, so 20)

Knowing he's out of his element, the cleric quietly listens as the outdoor dudes plan the camp.

Sterlin contemplates teh dagger and the event he just witnessed and then wonders at what the next events could possibly hold.

Anuk realizes thah the only way to get the boat down is by bruit force or by cutting the grass slowly out from under it allowing it to fall slowly. The traders boats are to big to do that with and not many skiffs stay out over night. However it may be safest to post the look outs upon the skiff high above the party. Then while you can be seen from farr off, you can also see something coming a long way.

Trellus realizes that the boat hasnt budged and hell need alot more strength to pulll it down (25). Then Hes going to have to find something major to stake it to.

The young man forces a grin to show he's only half serious.

"Ok, I gotta pray. Milo, whats for breakfast?"
Trellus freeezes as he realizes what he's said.

He stares off in the distance, imagining all manner of beasts as a smile crosses his face.

When his possesions are packed, he spends some time thinking over the spell memorization process he recently learned. With some effort, he manages to prepare a spell he hopes will be helpful to the pack today (Pass Without Trace).

"Ummm...if anyone is interested, I've still got an empty spell stone here. If anyone wants to store anything, we can do it. Maybe tonight, if anyone's got any 'unused' magic left."

Finally, he also takes a last look around before they head to their next destination (spot=21, listen=20).

Trellus wishing Milo was still there only reminds him that this is a deadly deadly place and that they need to asct together as a team of one mind or they could all wind up like that. However he is begning to find that it is alos a magical wonderful place as well.

Gilan rembers that there is supposed to be a very small red grass, it grows no more than 5 feet tall that if you shave off the outer skin of is supposed to repel incects, but it also dyes your skin redish gold until you can wash.

There is also a green spiky grass that will help with bug bites to relieve the itching and draw the posion up, if beatnen to a pulp and alyed as a poltice. Both species of grass are found during the days hike.

Flea finds nothing of any intrest in her serches before leaving.

Grymash prepares for the day...

It strikes both Jake and Anuk how little they know about the plains, on fact after having been raised inside the confined city in which no one is allowed to talk about whats outside, its amazing you know anything. Anuk heard a wispered conversation once about something that could swim through the grass but the sailors had called it a shark and were escorted out of town before they could say more. There is sooo much you all dont know, perhaps thats why you were sent, to realize how sheltered and protected you all have been until now.

You spend half a day travaling until you hear something from up ahead, it sounds like screaming and coughing. As if someoine were in trouble and were too week to fight off what ever it is.

Wednesday July 30th, 2003 9:41:42 PM

Sterlin casts barkskin upon himself and moves ahead cautiously with the rest. He checks his compass to see that they are still following the correct direction.

Grymash
Wednesday July 30th, 2003 9:53:52 PM

Grymash's mood improves as the day wears on. When they hear the screaming, he nods at Trellus and moves to the head of a column, anxious to find out what the pack is facing next. "What making all that noise? Sound painful. Or maybe fun! *hee hee hee*" He chuckles at his own joke as he grips his double axe with both hands.

"If trouble begin, Grymash need help from someone. Maybe cast barkskin, or something else to help protect Gry."

Anuk  d20+6=9 d20+2=16
Wednesday July 30th, 2003 10:02:16 PM

At the sound of the screams, Anuk's bow is instantly in his hands. He falls in line behind Jake and peers ahead, wondering what strange sight is in store for them.

"Whaddya think Jake," he whispers. "Think maybe the bounders turn into somethin' else after they're done being bounders?"

As the pack steals cautiously forward he keeps an eye and ear out for trouble.

Jake
Thursday July 31st, 2003 1:57:09 AM

Jake blinks at Anuk's suggestion. "Well, ah...ah...come ta think of it, ah ain't never seen no baby bounders. Tho ah have seen some small'r uns." Jake draws his sword and shield, just in case it's something...

DM Anthony
Thursday July 31st, 2003 10:43:27 AM

as you all creep foreward you finnaly come to a small man made clearing. Inside the claeing a small yourng halfling is tied and gaged. he is having a strange red smoke bloown into his face as 5 men laugh at him and continue to ask him where something is. 6 large burlap sacks are scatterd throughout the site.

Trellus
Thursday July 31st, 2003 12:00:37 PM

Trellus barely manages to stop himself from just walking on out there and stomping all five of those whitehanded treadles himself.

Instead, he taps Grymash and Sterlin and indicates circling to the right.
Then he taps Anuk and Flea and indicates circling to the left.

Then he counts to 60, and steps boldly into the clearing, and calls out sternly,
"Dudes, THAT is a totally bright-faced game you're playing, and I think you should stop. Now."

Gilan [AC: 18, endure elements]
Thursday July 31st, 2003 2:05:32 PM

Gilan takes some time to gather some of both plants and store them in two different specialty pouches for this purpose. He would work on them later for everyone.

When they hear the screams in the distance he takes one of the column heads as Trellus comments about three columns. He takes the time to cast barkskin on Grymash and then will cast one on himself. Nodding to Trellus he steps out the same time and plants his scimitar's point easily into the ground. "What did the halfling do that deserves this treatment?"

Sterlin (barkskin ac: 19 )  d20+4=18
Thursday July 31st, 2003 8:21:09 PM

Sterlin makes his way around to the right, attempting to move silently. (silent roll 18)

Anuk  d20+7=27
Thursday July 31st, 2003 9:08:48 PM

Anuk edges toward the clearing until he knows he has a clean shot at the men in the clearing. He stops, blending perfectly with his surroundings (hide 27 - nat 20!), arrow nocked and ready.

Grymash (barkskin, AC: 22)
Thursday July 31st, 2003 9:21:55 PM

Grymash steps out of the grass and into the clearing, towering over the others. The sight of the halfling bound and in pain makes his heart beat faster and his blood begin to surge.

Planting both feet firmly on the ground and brandishing his axe, he addresses the man nearest the little victim. "Me only ask one time...what little friend do to you!?"

Jake  d20+2=9 d20+2=18
Thursday July 31st, 2003 10:20:24 PM

Jake hangs out by Trellus and watches the others all be intimidating. Heck, nothing he can add here. He shrugs and keeps his weapons ready, though he holds back, and keeps watch of the back, listening for anything weird. (Spot 9, Listen 18)

Vestrati
Thursday July 31st, 2003 10:57:08 PM

Vestrati shakes his head back and forth trying to evade the tendrils of smoke but to little avail. The gag and the smoke have combined forces in an attempt to weaken his resolve. As the smoke continues to assault his nose Vestrati begins to feel woozy, but realizing he can't give in to anything his assailants do to him he shrugs it off and his features turn to steel, a wall of resolve is etched on his features, he won't let himself cave.

Flea (Protective Ward +4)  d20+11=18 d20+23=32
Friday August 1st, 2003 7:33:00 AM

As Flea passes by Trellus she experinces a familiar sensation. Her anxiety lifts, and she experiences a sense of confidence. The gnome nods in silent acknowledgement at the gift the cleric has bestowed on her. She creeps along the perimeter of the encampment on quiet feet (Move Silently=18) as she stows her short sword, and takes up her short bow. The rogue remains invisible(Hide=32)in the grasses as she takes a place to one side of the camoflaged ranger, further extending the circle around the bullies' encampment.

The men turn to you and snort, looking you all over. #5 by the campfire snorts, "Go away little piggies before we skin you and bake you in the sun." Then looking about he drawls out, if they dont leave skin'em boys well sell them latter. With that all but #2 stand and draw weapons.

Jake hears something coming quietly through the grass to his left.

Vestrati  d20=5 d20+10=25
Friday August 1st, 2003 10:43:50 AM

As the men divert their attention to the newcomers Vestrati peers around trying to see why so few would challenge the men harrassing him (Spot 6). Noticing the opportunity to loosen his bindings Vestrati begins to squirm to escape the ropes. He will try to leave the ropes so they can be removed without effort but still appear to tie him (Escape Artist 25).

Keeping an eye on the five treadles, Trellus casts his spell.

(Casting HOLD PERSON defensively,

Gilan [AC: 20/21 (endure elements, barkskin+2, dodge+1)]
Friday August 1st, 2003 1:35:53 PM

Gilan shakes his head with the answer that he is given and pulls back up his scimitar. "why is it that they all must make this so hard." He keeps close to Trellus as four of the thugs get up. "Trellus...want to work together like Jake and I did earlier?" He figures that the two of them working together will make things go quicker.

He sends his wasps off to scout out the area and see if there are anymore of these thugs around or anything else that they may need to know about.

Sterlin (barkskin ac: 19 )

Jake says to Trellus somewhat softly, "Something's coming outta the plains up that way! I'll be with you guys in a second.."
He takes a round to move closer to the sound, but not too far, and also keeps ready just in case something bursts out of the grass to swat it with the hilt of his sword.
[Moving half-speed while listening/watching, holding my attack in case something attacks me, Subdual attack hit AC 20 with the -4, did 5 damage..]

Sunday August 3rd, 2003 11:17:14 PM

Still hidden in the shadows of the plains grass (Hide=39) the rogue looses a yellow fletched arrow at the most logical target that is threatening the group. To confuse the enemy, Flea quietly moves from her spot (Move Silently=20)seeking an opportunity to flank one of the ruffians, with Anuk as her partner, or whomever from the Blood Pack is in the best position to do so.

She wonders to herself at the uncouth behaviour of these humans who would stoop so low as to skin fellow beings, let alone individuals they perceive to be children. This is evil of the worst kind and unpardonable. She makes a silent vow to show no mercy towards these men.

(OOC: With no access to e-mail at this time, I'm working without the map. Sorry!)

Vestrati is no longer tied and is keeping that fact hidden from the thugs, he hopse.

Trellus spell seems to take no effect what so ever as the man shakes it off as if it werent there (23 nat 20)

The Entangle spell goes off catching 3 of the men but not the other two as there is no living vegitation in their area due to the cookfire and stomping about. Vestrati however is not entangled it will however slow him greatly should he choose to move.

Jake turning his back on the mess of combat dosent see anything but can still hear it to his left, or maybe right??

Gry charges foreward but then suddenly is stopped short by the entangle spell. (1)

Anuk fires at the entangled man hoping it will be easier to hit him than any so he shoots #3 striking true and angering the man further ad the arrow protrudes from his ches and he bleeds. (OOC please use a number from the map if you wish to hit someone specific or I have to guess.)

Flea attacks one that has already been hit doubbling up on the damage, her arrow too strikes true!

(Hit AC 29, did 14 points of damage.)

Vestrati
Tuesday August 5th, 2003 9:13:04 PM

Jake charges and scores a good hit as he feels his blade sink into this man, the way they are behaving and the way they are dressed seem to make you all rember something..... Raiders, these must be raiders....

Vestrati targets 1 and 2 seeing that there is no way he can get all three in and make sure he got them. However as the spell goes off he is quickly sadened by not taking that chance as 1 and 2 quickly shake off the spell as they are to old for it to work on them. (both over 4 hd)

Anuk again tags the helpless man in the entangle spell. with the first arrow striking true due to the mans entangled state. (no worries im sorry I missed it, tring to keep up with combat on line is a bear)

Grymash esaly steps back out of the plants and frees himself.

Trellus feels his mace ring off the mans armor doing no damage but clearly making him angry.

Sterlin remebers something about the grass rubbing the right way in the right wind and building up electrical charges,, lighting storms in the grass, but that cant be right can it... in response to his question the sound grows and he sees a spark pop in front of his eyes. Everyone in the grass feels the small hairs on their neck stand up just a tiny bit.

Gilan's second attack misses however his first one strikes home, they are going to need to work together to finish this.

Vestrati fires a magic missile off and strikes Man #2

Anuk slays Man #3 but cant rember anything about the grass or the plains thatseems relavant, how ever there is a strange poping noise coming from the grass every once and a while.

Jake sees the guy attacking the helpless Grymash and sighs. Even though he's having a terrific fight with this #4 guy right now, he can't just let a friend get killed while helpless under some stupid magic...Even if it means leaving a fight, looking like a coward, to one of these stupid raider guys...

Jake turns away from combat with the nightsoil dude, (exposing himself to a free attack of opportunity) and charges straight at the #1 guy about to hack into Grimmy, putting all of his strength behind a single attack. (Power attack -5, activating Ceil's Whooping Seal for a +1 to hit/+4 to critical modifier...)

(I'm sorry, I currently am cut off from the internet, and using a different computer. I know my rewritten character (now a fighter level four) has a +10 to hit (+4 from his strength, +4 from level, +1 from focus, +1 from masterwork sword), and he has an AC of 21 when using the shield. I'll try to send you my character sheet when I get my computer back.)

[This message had to be reprinted twice, due to stupid computer.]

(I used a hero point btw. Hit AC 25, within critical threat with the Ceil's whooping thing, AC 19 for the critical. I did 1d10+4 +5 (power attack) +2 (specialization) or 19 damage on the regular hit, 31 damage on the critical. And the blood goes flying. Grymash stands there frozen like a statue, awaiting the death blow. He sees the raider get closer and closer. Everything is moving in slow motion. The sounds of battle and the screams of his pack sounds soft and muffled. All he can hear is his heart beat. Louder and louder it pounds in his chest. Grymash strains against his own stillness. His muscles tense and gorged with his blood become hard and taut.

Suddenly he begins to shake, his eyes widen with feral maddness. As the raider approaches Grymash the unexpected happens. The eye of Gargul, on his buckler, begins to radiate a brilliant light. A sight known by all in the pack as a beaming omen to Grymash's rage.

(used a hero point to re-roll the savethrow in a private post. successful)

"AAUUUGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!," roars Grymash as he comes back to life in front of the surprised raider. "GRY SAY IT WRITTEN WHEN MY EYE LOOK UPON WICKED MEN," Grymash steps forward to meet the raider, his axe whistles as it cuts through the air, "SHALL I STRIKE HE DOWN WITH MOST BLOODY VENGENCE AND SERVE AS MEAT FOR LORD GARGUL'S TABLE...AUGHHHH AND... UHH... GRY SAY IT DINNER TIIMMEEE!!!!... AAUUGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!"

Grymash swings into the raider with his double axe. (Hit AC 26 and 18. Damage: 16 and 10 for a total of 26 points)

With a booming grisly voice, Grymash bellows, "WHO NEXT ... GARGUL WAITS FOR YOOOOOU!!!!"

Gry tries to show off his strength to the other raiders, with the example he made with his current combatant, in order to intimidate them. (Intimidation check 25.)

Trellus in a panic and fear tries to seperate the combatants fighting he and his friends, casting his spell and directing the thug to run he feels the magic takehold and turn the mans heart to ice as he turns wide eyed and runs into the grass, however once the spell wears off he will be back...

Sterlin feels the hairs on the back of his neck clearly standing up now and can see the grass rubbing together building up charge. He casts his spell and centers it on Man#1 and suddenly a swarm of flying biting incests swarm about the man biting and clawing. However Graymash may be in part of the swarm too.

Vestrati leans down to pick up the nearest bag to open it and notices that he to has become entangled in the mass of writhing grasses, unable to move any farther he is stuck with this bag, it holds weapons and armor, any that he had is within the bag.

Flea missis with her arrow but it seems that Domi was watching out for his Cleric as the spell the young man cast was effective and the ma has fled into the grass, temporairly. However Gilan faces a similat foe and is in similar straights.

Gilan too misses his attack, becoming desprate he seems to let focus drift, he knows he is barely missing but cant seem to place the strike right where he needs it.

Anuk's arrow flies true, striking the Wasp eswarmed man in the arm holding the knife.

Jake while missing the critical hit does massive damage, then in the same instant Gry comes alive and seems to help Jake split the man in two killing the thug, as his torso falls over dead he seems to cures at you all in some unknown language. Luckly both Gry and Jake keep out of the swarm.

Anuk breathes a sigh of relief at the sight of Grymash moving. He cocks an ear and realizes that the strange crackling noise he hears is coming from the grasses (listen 19).

While his attention is turned, the grass at his feet springs upward again, the result of the entanglement spell. Anuk moves deftly, avoiding the tendrils trying to grasp him (reflex 16). He looks up in time to see Gilan fall to the ground. Bow still in hand, he fires at the attacker, but the constant movement he makes to avoid being trapped cause him to miss (hits AC 12 for 6 pts).

Seeing the arrow slam into Gilan, Trellus ignores everything but getting to his friend.
(Listen check failed, 9).

An unasked for thought floats freely through his mind This is getting to be a habit

Trellus can only grin at his own silent remark as he activates his Seal of Unconstricting Movement, closes in on Gilan, and revives the man with Domi's healing hand.

(Spontaneously casting Cure Moderate Wounds over Aid. Healed 16 hp)

(Unconstricting Movement Seal - The seal, once broken, enables the user to move and attack normally for 5 minutes, even under the influence of magic that usually impedes movement, such as hold person, paralysis, solid fog, slow and web spells.)

Flea  d20+6=19
Tuesday August 12th, 2003 12:43:55 PM

When there is a pause in the action, Flea uses the opportunity to look at the stranger who was being held by the raiders. He doesn't look like an evil bad guy...she thinks to herself. She can make out that he is small, like herself, but not a dwarf or a gnome. Maybe a halfling? And what was he doing waving his arms around in the air? Was he casting spells? She squints in the bright sunlight (Spot=19) burning down from above, "Milo?" she calls tentatively, hoping it is the lost companion.

Suddenly the air if full of birds, hundres upon thousands of birds all fleeing before the wind. A black powder or dust from the birds seems to float down over the party as they look up watching the screeching cacophany of sound wheel off to the north, then the giant flock of birds seems to wheel in the air and twist, performing amazing ariel acrobatics fleeing from . . . the sound of heavy large wings is heard and suddenly into the limited sky above you see what looks like a HUGE worm or snake, but with wings, its mouth open wide swallowing the birds in giant glups and crunches, the teeth of the beast larger than Flea. However the men seeing the giant creature cry out a name and flee in to the grass screaming to the south. The Wyrm sees you and wheels to come in and scoop you all up into its mouth as well, hunger driving this giant beast of the plains. When at the last minute as you all see death in its huge mouth it suddenly turns its black eyes to the south and then whips around in a tight spiral and turns back to the north. it is now that all can hear the cracckle and pop of what sounds like electric discharges. The Sterlin suddenly remebers a story from a sailor in his youth he happened to overhear. This must be an electric storm, a rare one of the plains made from static built up in the grasses and the wind. Suddenly he knows that if the stories are trye that anyone touching any grass in the next five minutes will be fried alive. Luckly this clearing is here, unluckaly it is till alive with grass cut short and entangling people.

Combat is over.

Trellus stands with mouth agape as the monstrous...whatever...bears down on them and then suddenly veers off.

"Anuk?" he says quietly into the resulting silence.
"I think you got to see your Moth."

"And Domi help us if we see it again."

After taking a moment or two to get all his organs functioning properly again, Trellus gets out a healing wand and taps himself with it.

Vestrati stands with his crossbow in hand looking around at those around him in the clearing. "I thank you for your help friends, but its hardly the time for introductions, we'd best get out of here and fast."

Vestrati quickly gathers up his equipment, tying his armor to his backpack, there's no time to don it now. "Anyone have any ideas? I wonder if the sacks might help guard us?"

Anuk  d20+6=21
Tuesday August 12th, 2003 6:42:13 PM

Dumbstruck, Anuk stares up into the sky until the flying giant is gone from view. Then he stares some more. "Light," he mutters feebly. "I had no idea." This is a memory that will stay with him for a long, long time.

The crackle of electricity in the grass brings him back to the present. His brow furrows as he thinks, hoping for some inspiration on protecting everyone (Knowledge Plains 21). "Can we get the boat down here in the clearing and get everyone on it til the storm passes? That may offer some protection since we'll be off the grass."

Sterlin

Flea  d20+10=23 d20+1=16
Tuesday August 12th, 2003 9:33:01 PM

Flea gapes as first the flock of birds, and then the great worm momentarily darken the sky. As soon as the raiders flee, she takes the opportunity to search the bodies of the ones killed in combat for any swag (Search 23).

She looks askance at the halfling stranger, as he dons his gear, ready to depart the clearing. "I'd stay out of the tall grass if I were you. It's safer here in the clearing." When Anuk suggests using the skiff the gnome answers, "That sounds like a good idea, ranger! And, maybe Sterlin's shady compass will show the direction to take?" On her way to the boat, Flea offers her assitance to any of the Blood Pack still entangled in the grass.

Who knows what effect being up on top of the boat will have whit an electric storm in the grass....... who know what staying here will have, but one thing is clear. It is building and the skiff is back through the grass.....

Flea  d20+10=14
Wednesday August 13th, 2003 11:10:36 PM

Flea starts to feel afraid. What I wouldn't give to be in a nice safe burrow!she thinks some place dark and cool and away from the danger of this savage place with the crazy grasses, scary beasts, and wild storms! She looks about wildly to see if there might be an opening for an underground passageway(Search=14)

Suddenly she remembers her pledge made before the council. She makes a fist with her right hand over her heart, and covers it with her left. Closing her eyes and lowering her head as if in prayer, she whispers "The land, my life". She concentrates hard, and tries to send a heart touch to each of her pack mates.

Trellus ( AC 18, endure elements, unconstricting movement)
Thursday August 14th, 2003 8:16:38 AM

Trellus gives the halfling a quick once-over.

Replace one halfling wizard with another halfling wizard? he wonders sourly. Is it really that easy?

Out loud, he says to Vestrati, "If Sterlin says stay out of the Grass, then stay out of the Grass."
He continues, "I'm Trellus. We're the Bloodpack."

Turning to Anuk and Flea, he responds "The skiff isn't big enough for all of us, and those treadles are still out there, and we could get zapped any minute. I'm thinking stay in the middle of this circle and take our chances. Sterlin? What do you think?"

Feeling the "tickle" from Flea, Trellus stops and looks at her with a grin.
"We'll be OK," he says confidently, and returns a "tickle" of his own.

Grymash  d20-2=5 d20+8=10 d20+3=7
Thursday August 14th, 2003 10:10:02 AM

Grymash doesnt know what to do. Its as if he has never encountered such an occurance, even though he has lived here all his life. He doesnt know what that funny feeling is that's making the hair on the back of his neck stand up. (Int check 5, wilderness lore 10, Wis check 7... sick rolling)

Gry looks at Trellus, then Flea, and everyone else. "What happening, Gry not understand!!" After hearing Trellus' instructions he steps into the clearing away from the tall grass.

Jake follows the others lead, mumbling about big worms. "Ah just don' know," He repeats once or twice. Then, "He stol' mah fight."

Anuk
Thursday August 14th, 2003 11:38:08 AM

Growing increasingly nervous, Anuk looks around at the grasses trying to decide what paths are open to them. "You're right, Trellus. Let's gather around the fire those beaters made...the grass seems lowest over there."

As he moves to the fire, Anuk feels the tickle from Flea and suddenly the feeling of oncoming dread retreats a bit. He looks to her, smiles, and sends one back.

Gilan
Thursday August 14th, 2003 1:09:29 PM

Now free he moves to the most tramped down area of the clearing. Feeling the heart touch from Flea he returns it and reaches out with it to the others. Looking to each he gives them a smile as they form up. "Just have to wait it out and see what happens." He sounds more confident than he feels, but he tries not to show it.

DM Anthony
Thursday August 14th, 2003 9:03:56 PM

You can now see the charges building in the grasses, snapping back and forth among them, then a terrifying thing happens, a charge snakes through the grasses that are still on the ground, cut and mashed down to make this clearing, snaking through the grasses till it comes upon one of the five bags full of stuff. With an amazingly loud POP you watch the back fly up into the air and land with a thud beside Flea, smoking slightly. Looking down you see, you are all still standing on the grass, some cut short, others bent over, but still here. you are running out of time.

Jake
Friday August 15th, 2003 4:40:32 AM

Jake gets up quickly, looking around, absolutely befuddled. He then rushes to join the others, following their lead entirely.

[A few questions: Will all of us be able to get into the skiff? Are we at the skiff? I'm confused on if we've gotten there or not, how far we are away, who is lagging, what it takes to get into the skiff.]

Flea
Friday August 15th, 2003 7:38:53 AM

The leather clad rogue jumps when a bag near her explodes. She moves to the center of the clearing close to Sterlin and the rest of the group, trying to find a spot where the fire has burned the grass down to bare ground. She gets down on one knee, and uses her short sword to cut at the turf and will try to peel back the sod to expose some bare earth and expand the circle. Flea will work as best she can to make a wall of sod and dirt around any bare spot.

"I don't know if this will work, but if we can get off the grass, stand on bare ground, maybe we can avoid getting shocked," pants the gnome. "I never noticed it before, but how does Rattledam stay safe during electrical storms? Is there a device that draws the charge away, or is it by magic?"

Trellus ( AC 18, endure elements, unconstricting movement)
Friday August 15th, 2003 12:56:57 PM

Trellus' good mood is short lived as the bag explodes into the air.

He quickly joins Flea in her efforts, ripping up grass in an attempt to create a dirt spot wide enough for the group.

Grymash  d20+8=24 d20-2=1 d20+3=15
Friday August 15th, 2003 3:05:38 PM

Grymash isnt smart ... that is known by all who meet him, but he has with a wisdom and understanding of what it takes to survive in the wilderness. (Wilderness Lore 24, Int 1, Wis 15)

"NO PULL SMALL GRASS, IT TAKE TOO LONG .... BURN IT!! IT DRY ... IT BURN FAST!! GRASS SMALL ... FLAME BE SMALL TOO. WE BEAT OUT WITH BAGS AND FEET BEFORE FIRE GET TO TALL GRASS!! WE STAND IN ASH ...QUICK!!"

Grymash runs to the farther into the clearing and quickly takes his fire starting kit out, and starts to try and make a spark!! He has a torch ready to light. "THIS SLOW TOO ...AUUGHHH ... WHILE GRY LIGHT TORCH ...SOMEONE LOOK IN BAGS FOR STUFF TO HELP BURN!! .... AUUGHH BURN FIRE BURN!!!"

(This is meant to be a controled burn. small grass isnt going to produce 20-ft flames!! :)

DM Anthony
Friday August 15th, 2003 3:51:15 PM

Actually the grass is easily pulled up and destroyed once it is dead and flattened and then Gry grabs a tourch as sees the campfire still lit that provided an empty space in the spell eairlier. With only the three of you working you may make a large enough clearing for everyone or you may not. what you need is more help. It ic clear however that this will work as a charge flows into the ring like water and hits the edge of the area you have created and diverts till it streams back into the grasses. This will keep the storm at bay however everyone needs to help.

Anuk
Friday August 15th, 2003 5:10:23 PM

Anuk drops to his knees and helps, ripping grass from the ground as quickly as he can and depositing it away from the cleared area.

Sterlin
Friday August 15th, 2003 7:14:22 PM

Sterlin begins pulling up grass as well, although to himself he wonders if the grass will just reappear as it does when you cut it down out in the plains.

Jake
Saturday August 16th, 2003 12:52:00 AM

Jake confusedly rushes to help Flea, tearing at the grass with his bare hands. Suddenly, he realizes something, and takes off his chain shirt as quickly as he can, then tosses it and his sword to the side. "Man, that coulda got me..." he mumbles, as he goes back to tearing at the grass. "Use your sickle, Gilan!"

Flea
Saturday August 16th, 2003 9:54:36 PM

The gnome continues to cut and pull at the sod, rolling it back to form a buffer between the grass of the plains and the expanding circle of bare earth on which the pack stands. The velvet feel of the earth on her hands has a calming affect on Flea, who's early life had been spent in a comfortable burrow surrounded by the gardens kept by her family.

Trellus

Seeing the effort is succeeding, Trellus gets down to some serious grass pulling.

DM Anthony
Monday August 18th, 2003 11:24:02 AM

Anuk, Sterlin, Jake, Flea, and Trellus rip and burn the grass till you are standing on a large space of barren earth. The storm is almost here, now only one worry, will exposed metal be a problem???

OOC: please let me know everyone where you are standing, please lets post every day!

Sterlin
Monday August 18th, 2003 1:56:43 PM

Sterlin will strip down to his loin cloth and stand near the middle of the patch.

Trellus (endure elements)
Monday August 18th, 2003 3:38:43 PM

Standing in the middle of the dirt pile, Trellus is all grins again.

"Dude, you taking a bath?" he calls lightly to Sterlin.

The grin fades as Sterlin explains his rational for removing his clothing.

"Light," the cleric grumbles, hastily removing his breastplate. He sets his armor down near the edge of the grass. On a hunch, he puts his mace down in the grass a few feet further on.

Then he stands in the dirt pile next to Sterlin.

"How 'bout the little people get in the very middle and the rest stand around them." he suggests protectively.

Gilan
Monday August 18th, 2003 4:55:21 PM

Gilan will help in the endevear to help in clearing out the area. He will then stab his scimitar into the ground some feet away near the edge of the cleared area. I am sure that this is the only metal gear that he has on.

He stays as close to the others as possible so that they can all stay away from the edge of the grass.

Jake
Monday August 18th, 2003 5:23:32 PM

Having thought of that metal part but been pretty quiet about it, Jake has already taken his stuff off and tosses it to the side. "sunbaked treadles..I just know this is going to ruin my stuff. Oh well."

Flea
Monday August 18th, 2003 5:37:57 PM

Seeing the others divesting themselves of all items made of metal, the rogue makes a neat pile of her weapons on a bare patch of ground justinside the circle cleared by the group. She starts to rummage in her pack, for other metal items like her sewing needle, and her masterwork tools. Sensing that time is of the essence, she places her entire pack next to her weapons. Heaving a deep sigh of regret, she removes the pouch containing her meagre treasure (5gp,9sp,8cp)and tosses it on top of the pile.

Returning to huddle with the pack she mumbles: "Me da will have my hide if I loose those tools!" Looking hopefully at first Sterlin, then Gilan, Flea asks the druids: "Maybe it's just the grass that carries the charge?"

Anuk
Monday August 18th, 2003 6:16:21 PM

Remembering the way the bags of stuff popped up in the air and, of course, came back down, Anuk has visions of a steel and iron rain coming down on them. Still,...might be better than getting fried directly. At least we might have a chance to dodge the stuff if it comes to it., he thinks.

Despite the danger of being unprotected, he removes his weapons and armor--even his new ring. All the metal he can find.

"Curse these steel buckles," he mutters as he slips out of his leather armor. He deposits his gear near Flea's and as he returns to huddle with the group he suddenly stops in his tracks and his trademark grin breaks out across his face. First he chuckles, then he guffaws.

As the static charge builds around them, everyone's hair has begun to stand on end.

Jake
Tuesday August 19th, 2003 3:15:17 AM

Jake sighs and tosses everything else with it... his gold, precious gold!, and that belt buckle, and his ring...sigh.

Grymash  d20+3=8
Tuesday August 19th, 2003 12:08:30 PM

Grymash's eyes widen with a sudden spark of awareness. In their madness of burning and tearing away the grass, he realizes he too is wearing grass ... from head to toe.

He quickly scrambles to remove it. While trying to take off the greaves, he trips and falls ...again!! However, undauntingly he continues to hastedly removing his grass armor.

(Is it common knowledge, in this primitive age, that metal is an excellent conductor for electricity?)

having done all you can, divested as much grass and metal as you can you stand huddled together in the clearing as the storm hits.

First you can feel it coming as the world takes on a bluish tint and the smell of ozone becomes strong. The small hairs all over your body stand up and then the others, all your hair standing on end. If you were touching some one you know letting go would be deadly now, or touching anyone else. The only option left. Stay as still as a statue. You watch the sparks become rays and the rays beome bolts jumping all about. it becomes the most amazing light show you have ever seen in your life. Blots of raw power arching over your head jumping from the tops of the grass across the clearing to the other side. A done of death rocketing above you in beauty and in death. The gods be praised it is an amazing sight and you know you are one of the few beings EVER to see suchj a sight. you can see the electricity passing though all the metal and heating it slightly. That heat you can tell would have become VERY uncomfortable but more importantly it would have made it next to imposibble to keep still. Every on can see another amazing sight. Gry's steel grass stuff seems actualy to repel the energy a bit. (Steel grass is resistant electricity 5) Sudenlly the popings start, just like the bag before. It is water. All water begins to pop and explode out of its continers. that must have been waht caused the bag earlyer to jump. Then as fast as it happened it is passed. The storm passes and nothing the any worse for the experience. you stand there smiling at each other on the muddy gound. Watter everywhere from the storm. water all over the ground, covering the area all around you. Water everywhere....

(OOC - I'm assuming just the clearing is wet?)

Trellus stands in petrified awe as the lightning bolts stream through the clearing.

He inwardly cringes as all the water containers start exploding, and then peeks around in the sudden stillness.

"By the noonday sun!" he roars suddenly. "How do we keep ending up knee-deep in water in a blasted desert?!?"

The young cleric quickly leaps out, scoops up his equipement, and starts running for the Grass.
"Last thread, dudes!" he calls. "Let's get out of here!"

Gilan (endure elements)
Tuesday August 19th, 2003 5:06:27 PM

Gilan scoops up his waterproof pack and looks it over. Well if thier water had just blown up like alll the rest had earlier than the inside of his pack was now wet. Pulling his scimitar from the wet ground he cleans it off as he looks around.

The earlier show had been amazing and the aftermath more than deadly. "Guys...lets not try that one again." He makes his way towards the skiff to check on it and see how it held up. "One good thing about this is that the bugs will most likely take a little longer to get here."

Glancing around some more as he runs to the skiff he calls out. "The next event...how far away and what direction??"

Anuk
Tuesday August 19th, 2003 11:33:09 PM

Anuk's jaw drops as the display of light and power surrounds the pack. The rivers of current moving through the grass feel as though they are moving across his skin. When the storm finally passes a final shiver runs down his spine and he breaths a sigh of relief...until he realizes he's ankle deep in water.

He quickly moves to gather his equipment and give it a once over. All seems well, except for the items in his pack -- soaked. Fearing the worst, he rummages for his journal. A knot forms in his stomach as he pulls it out -- pages stuck together, and ink running in little rivulets off the pages and onto the ground.

Anger courses through him. He reminds himself that he can start again. He will start again. He forces himself to think of the giant creature they just saw, of the sense-defying storm they just witnessed. This is where he will start. He'll write about things not even dreamed of by the librarians and academics...things they were too frightened to experience on their own. Someday, he'll return and he'll give them his book and they'll know he wasn't...he wasn't...what? Afraid? Ashamed? He stares at the glove on his arm. What do I want to prove? Will it matter what they think? Someday, I will present my book to them. But maybe what they think won't matter then...because I'll be home.

Once again, the sounds of the pack bring him back to the present moment. "I'm with you, Gilan. Let's get moving." He dons his ring and places the rest of his equipment in the crook of his arm. He takes a final look at the dripping journal. It'll never dry in time and will serve only to draw the insects of the plains. He throws it into the center of the clearing, turns, and runs into the grasses toward the skiff.

running seems to do the trick and unfortunately the water in your backs has busted. Why would this type of storm effect water in such a way, what would be the reason. fleeing through the grass you reach the skiff in time to climb a board. You notice as you run MANY incests and such pulling them selfs out of the ground shaking off dirt. Even the flying ones seem to know how to burrow. Amazing.

Safe(ish) at last, Trellus stops to put his armor back on. While doing that, he calls out to Grymash,
"Hey Gry, can you get out your small healing wand and weave me and Gilan a spell or two?"

Finishing with his equipment, the blond man runs his hand over his head while contemplating all they've seen.
"Oh yeah," he grins, "New pack rule - splitting up is usually a bright idea"

Having addressed that not-so-good decision, he turns to the halfling.
"I'm Trellus," he says, "What happened to you?"

Anuk
Wednesday August 20th, 2003 5:42:01 PM

Anuk gets equipped and then watches with interest as the insects emerge from the ground and head toward the water in the clearing.

When he hears Trellus mention splitting up, he makes a mental note; separation = sunbaked.

Waiting for a break in the conversation between Trellus and the halfling, Anuk worms his way in and asks the small man, "Hey...you doing okay?"

Recovering from a rare moment of speechlessness, the rogue looks at Sterlin and asks: "Where to now, Sterlin? What does the compass say?"

Jake puts on his armor and sighs, thinking about all the lost water. "Man...we're baked, in tha plains, ain't got water. Good thin' we's ain't too far from home. Let's get goin' back so's we's gets more water."

you cuickly find the skiff and discover that it is just fine. The rope leading up to it has been burned out but the boat itself seems unharmed. You can see the caskets of water up on to and due to the dryness of the area it seems as if they didnt burst....

Gilan points to the skiff and shakes his head. "What do you know...the skiff made it just fine." With a look to Jake he smiles. "Sorry...we do have the events to see and remember what Malafret said...we cannot miss one."

Taking the time as they comtemplate thier next move he checks the stuff in his pack to see what is beyond help and get rid of it. Taking some of the things he leeches as much of the water out of them as he can and then ties them to the skiff to dry.

"Uh Gry, that healing wand?" the cleric reminds his friend helpfully.

Looking up at the boat, he rubs the back of his neck thoughtfully.
"Well, the shady thread is, we still got water."

"But, can anybody fly up there with a new rope?" he asks, "Or do we need to weave this the hard way?"

He looks over to the half-orc and gnome, idly wondering how high Gry could throw the diminutive rogue.

(OOC - how high above our heads is the boat?)

(Anthony SAYS About 20' from the ground, 10 - 15' from your heads.)

Once the boat is recovered, he glances at Sterlin with a grin.
"OK, Walker! Which way do we weave now?"

Flea looks at the cleric and suggests: "Maybe we could mend our waterskins, and refill them from the containers in the boat. Dragging Mi..., uh, dragging the boat through the grass would just slow us down and make us a target. What do you think?"

Without waiting for an answer, the rogue drops her pack and digs out the rope, throwing it over her head so that it rests over one shoulder and across her body. Flea takes a short run and jumps. She reaches for the side of the little skiff, and if successful will pull herself up and sommersault into the boat.

"Easiest way is ta toss a rope with a catch up there." Jake takes out his silken rope and ties a knot through his spade's handle. He fumbles a bit at first (Rope Use 7 :P), then sighs and just does a regular knot. (Take 10: 11 total). His makeshift grapple ready, he gives it a light toss up there. (Trying not to damage the ship, threw it up there with an AC 21?) If successful, he'll tug it lightly till it is securely anchored, then suggest someone climb up it or what not.

Gilan glances to the rest and then to the two wasps that are buzzing around him. "Glad to see that you two made it." He thinks back to the event that they had just witnessed and shivers. It had been breathtaking a true show of nature's power...to wield that kind of power. He shakes himself from his revelry and watches as the others work. "Such power does nature possess...to have only half that power..."

Vestrati

Watching the others attempt to regain access to their skiff Vestrati steps forward. Shrugging a bit as if confused Vestrati speaks to the group. "Thank you for rescuing me, I don't think I would've been able to get out of that one on my own. They had me tied down pretty good and wouldn't let up on their interrogation. I'm not sure what else they were carrying with them, but we may want to check the sacks after we get access back to the skiff. Oh, I almost forget, my umm, name is Vestrati..."

Some how between Flea and Jake you get a rope up to the skiff and the water. After a quick drink you are off on your way again, following the directions of the ball. Finnaly you come across three bounders burried in the grass looking bloated and full, as if they were very sick. They are larger than any bounder you have seen before and the closer you get the more menicingly they growl, although they dont seem to be able to move. the sun is setting quickly.

DM Anthony

The three bounders writhe in agony upon the short grass and roll from side to side. They can sense you and hate your presence here but other than a half hearted attempt at snapping at you if you get to close they are able to do nothing about it. The pain they are in is clear in their eyes as they moan and howl into the new sunset. As the sun drops lower into the sky it is clear that this is the event you are to witness, so similar to another you saw but also so diffrent. The bounders begin to thrash upon the earth and now it is clear the pain they are in, it is almost as if something lives and moves with in this beast. One of them lays on his side panting and drooling into the grass, a second sits draped over a rock, proped up by the formation. The third, clearly the strongest of the three sits up on its haunches growling and yiping in agony. It is painful to watch this event, the torture radiating off the beasts, the pain they feel almost you feel too. Then as the sun falls halfway below the horizion the stropngest of the bounders lifts its head to howl and cry to the dying day. The howl starting deepwith the beast has a wet burbly sound to it. Almost as if the beast were drowing in itself. That wet guggly howl comes out weak and lost and then suddenly goes silent, although the beast continuses to strain its body as if it were howling. its eyes buldge wide and you can see tears there. The other two open thier mouths too as if to join in the howl or perhaps heave something up and out of themselfs. The silence is complete, and terrifying. No sound is made in the plains as these three animals shake and thrash in their slient agony. Finnaly a new sound issues from the howling bounder, a wet ripping sound, as if cloth soaked in watter was suddenly torn apart, and following that sound comes another you recognize. A high scream that sounds almost human. A scream you know from down deep in the darkest recesses of your fear and imagination. It is nightmare come to life, it is fear itself screaming at you, it is the nightime fears come to life and living in the waking world. The bounders open mouth erupts as a gyser of blood and fluid into the sky. The ripping and tearing sounds come from all about you as all three bounders erut in death, and life. For leaping out of the dying bounder shell and into the night comes death itself. The other two struggle out of thier lifeless husks and stride toward the first. The beasts circle and pace one another as you stand terrified staring at these three beasts siloeted in the failing light. The largest of the three lifts its head to the heavens and screams closely followed by the other two, and finaly you understand the sream you know so well. It is a challange to the gods themslef to come out of the heavens and face these creatures. The creatures promising to feast on the bones of the gods. You know these beast, you know them and they are death itself. You know them as...

A stunned Trellus looks at the Rapke in horror.

Domi help us

Somewhere in the back of his mind, the pig to bounder to rapke circle is very interesting. Near the front, however.....

The cleric quickly steps up next to Grymash.
"Gry!" he says urgently, "'Don't interfere with the event!'". He quotes Malafret, hoping to break through to his friend.

"If those Rapke wish to leave, by the Grass LET THEM! If they don't......"

Then we gotta weave with 3 rapke. And we already used up our spells. Light

"Gilan, you still got that blessing necklace?"

Trellus casts a quick incantation and touches Grymash, pouring Bulls Strength into the half orc. (+2 Str)

Then, he gets ready.

Gilan (endure elements)
Monday August 25th, 2003 2:54:44 PM

Gilan watches the activities of the bounders with a mixture of awe and fear. As they are ripped apart fromt he inside and three rapke are born he trembles in fear. "By Flower's grace." You have never heard him ever mention a god before and the fact that he suddenly does gives great voice to his current feelings.

Breaking free of the trance like state that he had fullen into with this newest development he can only nod to Trellus and finger the necklace. Pulling his shield around and his scimitar appears in his right hand, he has no intentions of attacking but he will be noone's meal.

Nodding he slowly backs away, touching each of his companions with the heart touch as he goes. It somehow spreads the idea to slowly back away but be prepared. "Right Trellus...we cannot interfere with the events." He is feeling slightly overwhelmed with all that they have learned in the past...what day and a half?

Sterlin
Monday August 25th, 2003 3:19:51 PM

Sterlin gets one of those faraway serious looks on his face like he used to back at the swimming hole while others played. The scene taking place has had a powerful effect on Sterlin's emotions.

Grymash (Bulls Strength)
Monday August 25th, 2003 4:23:25 PM

Grymash stares hard at the bounders as they quiver in pain. Grymash wishes his dagger-like gaze could cause them even more pain, and he smiles grimly when he notices that their presence makes this event even more unpleasureable for the bounders. His knuckles turn white as he grips his double axe ... it takes every effort to keep himself from hacking them all down. Then again ... why deprive them of their agony, so to prolong the experience Grymash is content to stand back and watch on with pleasure. Their shrills and moans are like sweet music.

However, as soon as the rapke are born from their shredded bodies, his mouth hangs open, agape in shock. He grips his axe again with a vice-like hold. His muscles tense however his rage fails to come. He feels emotionally spent ... but rapke must die!!

The slight touch and calming words of Trellus quickly distracts him from the scene. In a low voice ..."see that .... rapke demons ... brought here through bounder meat!!" Grymash's mind is spinning as he realizes the magnitude of the situation. "Rapke come out bounders ... bounders are piggies ... Gry eat piggies ... everyone eat piggies!!"

Grymash covers his eyes and shakes his head as he continues on muttering "rapke this and piggies that." Some might even understand him counting off numbers in orcish, as if trying to figure how many prairie pigs he has eaten in his lifetime.

Flea  d20+23=29 d20+9=10
Monday August 25th, 2003 11:15:49 PM

Flea looks on in disgust as the Rapke emerge from the bounders. Keenly aware of the potential threat these creatures pose, she slides quietly into the shadows of the surrounding grass and readies an arrow. She draws the brightly coloured fletchings close to her cheek and focusses on the throat of the closest rapke. She will loose the arrow at the first sign of an attack by the rapke, but otherwise holds her action and watches the bloody event unfold...The rapke screams rattle her but she tries to remain calm.

Jake actually trembles slightly. Rapke terrify them, though he'd never let another pack mate know...
He steps forward, standing between them all and the Rapke, knowing that he's the solidest and thus he should be ready to stand... He holds his shield and sword ready, and prays that he doesn't get attacked.

Tuesday August 26th, 2003 11:07:45 AM

The Rapke lower their heads in that familiar reptilian fassion and mbegin to smell the air. The two flanking ones fan out to the sides as the lead comes in close. You all can see that they will attack and although you can probably take all three of them eventualy, someone will die. They begin to move slowly in to flank and divide, the inteligence of these beasts is astounding. The fear begins to course through each of you, as does the hate and anger. The battle is near, it is almost upon you, it is. . . suddenly you feal the heart touch but in a way you have never before experienced, It is like a flood of hope and life. It is like redemtion. A voice be hind you speaks in soft commanding tones.

"No one move, no one think anything violent or angry, go to a place of peace and life and consentrate on the bond between each other."

Walking up between you very slowly is a Plains Walker, the same on in fact who gave Sterlin his knife. He is smiling and weaving his way through the grass soo slowly. The heart touch is coming from him and it is amazing the feeling of his life force, how raw and powerful it is. And you know that is excactly what he is sharing with you.

"Consentrate my fine shadows, focus."

He continues to walk toward the Rapke, which you now notice are blinking and looking about confused and lost.

"Look at their eyes and remeber what you see there."

Looking into their eyes you see it. Without warning and as clear as day. there is a wildness in these eyes like the wildness of the bounders you saw. They are menelolent, and cruel and will pip and tear just to taste blood. They are evil and vile, but there is not that spark of otherness in their eyes you have seen in the ones ridden and used by the Barrons men. These are just animals. The Walker casts silently and his hands are suddenly coated with blue power. Cracling like electricity. The rapke see it and pull back slightly. the smell of fear begins to drip off them. Their focus on the electricity poping off the Walkers hands. He snaps his fingers to make it pop and crackle moreand the Rapke continue to back out. Finnaly the lead Rapke steps into the tall grass and the Walker reaches out and grasps a tall stalk of grass leaning up against the Rapkes side. You watch as the power leaps out of his hands and lashes up the side of the beast. it does not real damage clearly but the Rapke screaches in pain and surprise and begins to bolt away from you all, the oter two following. Like that they are gone.

The walker turns to look at you all and smiles widely as you feel the heart touch fade.

"Well done all of you, you hid from them well. dont try that with the Barrons Rapke though, they wont fall for it. It will only work on the wild Bounders and Rapke.... Now whos fixing dinner? Im starved."

Gilan (endure elements)
Tuesday August 26th, 2003 4:17:48 PM

Gilan watches as everything starts to go bad. He had been afraid of this and he starts forwards again to aid his pack. He has been near death too many times so far, but for his pack he will risk much.

Then he feels the heart touch, but different, and he glances around to find everyone else looking in wonder themselves. Then he sees and hears the voice of a Plainswalker and the one that gave Sterlin his knife. He follows the man's orders as he moves forward.

Once the rapke are gone he cannot say anything. There is just too much to think about and try to digest. He just sheathes his scimitar and slides his shield to his back.

Food...yes and time to think...that is what he needs.

Trellus (endure elements)
Tuesday August 26th, 2003 4:31:19 PM

The young cleric grimly prepares another spell as the Rapke split up for their attack. Then, he feels the heart touch, much stronger than any he or his mates have produced before.

Who?

The Walker has returned, and Trellus instinctively follows his instructions, especially given the bloody alternative.

And the Rapke leave!

Trellus whirls in elation.
"Dude! That pick was totally the night soil!"

He looks back at the bloody Bounder carcasses and then again at the Walker.

"You mean we can hide from wild Rapke just by sending the heart touch?!? Totally shady!"

Question upon question rush through the young man's head. He's finally distracted from the multitude by the Walker's question.
"Food. Right. Uh, Milo. Light. I don't know. Uh, Gry?"

Trellus decides maybe an introduction would be polite.
"Uh, we're the Bloodpack. From Rattledam. Many shadows for your help. I thought we were at our last thread for sure."

Flea
Tuesday August 26th, 2003 9:54:21 PM

Flea recognizes the heart touch for what it is and does as instructed. She concentrates on the affection she feels for her new found family.

As the plains walker moves forward the rogue sidles up to Trellus and whispers through clenched teeth, "What about this Vestrati character? I don't think he is part of the second circle. He hasn't taken the oath...he can't feel the heart touch." She looks suspiciously at the dark halfling through the corner of her eyes.

Jake
Wednesday August 27th, 2003 12:55:21 AM

Jake sends the heart pulse as well, and afterwards grins, feeling slightly stupidly sentimental. But he can't help it, it feels great.
He regards the plains walker with a bit of suspicion unlike the others. I mean, sure the groups' plains protectors, but they aren't exactly NATIVE, I mean, not really. Aren't they more devoted to Rattledam? How does Rattledam fit in, anyways? He thinks to himself he's got to ask Malafret some questions later on...

"Uh, shady," jake says. "Ah am hungry, but...we don't have no cook anymo'."

Anuk
Wednesday August 27th, 2003 1:18:44 AM

As his heart tingles at the approach of the walker, Anuk lowers his bow. He stares in amazement as the rapke turn and disappear into the grasses.

As the pack relaxes and discusses preparations for the coming night, Anuk screws up his courage and approaches the walker, a fist over his heart and the other hand clasped around it. He bows slightly.

"Sir...um...we've seen many strange things with the slugs and the bounders and now the rapke. Do the rapke transform as well? Is there more to this cycle?"

The walker laughs heartaly with Trellus's enthusiasum. "In time youll be able to hide from the wild ones, but for now it will help only a little. Eventualy if you practice and some of you take the right paths," with that he seems to look right at Sterlin "your pack may some day be able to walk among the great heards themselfs and never be bothered."

To Anuk he smiles knowingly and answers crypitcly... "well tat is what you are out her to see is it not?"

As he looks about he sees Vestri and his brow kits torether as he swipes his white hair back out of his eyes.

"You little one I dont know but you have the look and smell of raider about you. Where are you from or should I spill your watter here and be done with it." With out moving a long knife suddenly appears within his grasp. He does not move but the joy has dissapeared from the circle and the threat hangs in the air.

Vestrati
Wednesday August 27th, 2003 4:03:44 PM

His eyes focused on the man Vestrati thinks for a moment and replies with a bit of a flippant tone.

"Heh, I'm far from a raider, in fact, it seems like all I've been doing lately is fleeing from them. A group of raiders just caught me back a ways and kept questioning me about some Monjo Coldar, whatever that is. Luckily these people rescued me right before the storm. Whatever I may seem I'm no raider."

Anuk
Wednesday August 27th, 2003 7:27:12 PM

Anuk smiles back at the walker, a little disappointed at the answer, but glad to know the pack is being watched as they go through this experience.

When the walker questions the halfling, Anuk steps forward. "Please, sir...we don't yet know much about him, but I don't think he was one of the raiders. When we discovered him, he was bound...and screaming. The raiders were clearly holding him as a prisoner...they were hurting him."

Then he adds to the halfling, "We sure are curious about how you ended up out here, though."

He stands slowly and moves to lay a hand on the halfling. "It is true...we found him tied up like a prairie pig at a picnic." He looks to the others for further support and then back to the Walker. "He owes us a debt if nothing else...if you would allow it...can the pack handle this??" He hopes that the Walker will agree to let the pack take the risk if they so choose.

The gnome's shoulders drop and her body visibly relaxes as Vestrati explains his tale to the walker. Flea turns to the halfling, "Do you know how to cook?"

As the Pack speeds to the the Halflings defence the Walker flashes his quick smile again, the knife disapearing. Looking about he address the pack.

"Out here in this place of Wonder and fear, of life and death there is no room for hesitation, inaction, or half measures. This new boy is a part of you or he is not. There is no middle ground. Things can change, leaderships can move, members of a pack can come and go but they eiter are pack or they are not pack. There is no room for mistrust, confusiion, or fear. You are Pack, family, village, friend, or you are enemy." Silence sits on the camp at his words and then he breaks it himself.

"Now whos cooking because I am starving!!! Or do I need to cook this evening?"

Jake

Jake sorta ventures, "Ah guess ah can cook. Ah know how ta make piggy bits, tha's intestine's and such, with a bit o' sauce ta make ya thirsty."

Grymash
Thursday August 28th, 2003 1:57:58 PM

Grymash emerges from the tall grass. Insects crawl all about his body after foraging through the denser regions of their locale. He pays them no mind. Leisurely brushing them off, unless one looked to be particularly plump and tasty. He holds his helmet upside down like a bucket. Inside is a collection of grubs, assorted wild vegetables and several large crunchy insects. (I made a Wilderness Lore check 20 in my last post. I dont remember the DC for finding food. Either I found enough for myself or myself and 5 other people ... not sure. Somewhere in that range.)

In fact, Gry had stabbed a rather large insect with one of his daggers. It's still squirming a little as it remains impaled on his blade. Grymash chews on something crunchy ... its anybodies guess at what it could be!!

With a proud smile on his face, Gry presents his findings to the pack. His eyes dart back and forth at each of you ... looking for approval.

"LOOK ... See what Gry find!!"

Gilan (endure elements)
Thursday August 28th, 2003 3:07:09 PM

Gilan nods in respect to the Walker. The new halfling would be part of the pack of that he was sure...if not they would pay later for their trust.

Glancing as Gry returns he takes time to dig out a few of the roots that he has brought back. "At least we will eat good." He crunches into the root that tastes like a cross between an apple and mild onion.

Smiling to Jake he shakes his head lightly as he laughs. "Just try and go little easier on the sauce this time...I am not sure if we have enough water to put Gry out this time...though the steam rolling from his ears was funny enough." He smiles good-naturedly at Gry and Jake, while holding back more laughter.

Trellus
Thursday August 28th, 2003 3:52:08 PM

The young cleric nods heartily at Gilan's comment, while taking a tasty tuber from Grymash with a wink.

"Yeah, Jake," he adds in mock sternness, "Its not like we can all go jump in the Dam this time."

"Hey Anuk, bring that stone over here. Looks like we're at the last thread today."

When Anuk breaks out the Ioun Stone, Trellus casts Bulls Strength, Shield of Faith, and Remove Fear into it.

Then, he sits down for some grub, alternately throwing questions at the Walker and the halfling.

To the Walker -- "Are the Rapke children of the Bounders, or some kind of parasite?"

To the halfling -- "So, where're ya from?"

Sterlin
Thursday August 28th, 2003 6:39:02 PM

Sterlin gets his fill of scrubs. Like the barbarian, it is not the first time he has eaten the slimy things.

Sterlin looks at the welcome guest," If I am not being to intrusive, would you mind telling how you became a walker? "

Anuk
Thursday August 28th, 2003 9:52:36 PM

Anuk smiles and breathes a sigh of relief as the walker sheaths his knife. When Gry reappears from the grass, Anuk realizes how hungry he is after the day's events. "Grilled grubs...been a while, but I'd eat just about anything right now."

At Trellus' prompting, Anuk produces the Ioun stone. After Trellus casts his spells into it, Anuk concentrates, and casts Pass Without Trace into it as well. When he's done, he looks up at the Pack.

"Still room for a couple more spells. Anyone?"

Jake
Thursday August 28th, 2003 10:53:22 PM

Jake puts together the food and cooks everything. Everything is fried, and a thick sauce is made that is quite spicy. This is then applied lightly to everything. "Ah'd suggest eatin' some of mah bread with it," he comments as he hands out slices of bread as well.
"Ah, mistah Walkah, ah was wonderin', these Barons, why don't we fight 'em directly? Or use tha planes ta? Lahk, send a stampede ta get 'em? Alsa, what is this group which we joined...? Protectors of tha Plains, ah mean. Seems we know nuttin'."

At first Flea picks at her food, but her hunger gets the better of her, and in the end all the food is eaten, the last bit of sauce sopped up with a piece of Jake's good bread. "Thanks, Gry, Jake, for provisioning for us. I'll do the washing up" volunteers the gnome.

As an afterthought, she adds "If we're going to camp out here tonight, maybe the druids can fashion some of those shady domes that keep the bugs out?"

Flea collects the dishes from her pack mates, and (Hide=25) keeps a low profile around the Walker, but collects his dish too. She uses bunches of grass to scrub the simple utensils and containers clean, before handing them back to their owners.

Although the Walker instills a sense of security, Flea keeps her eyes open for anything out of the ordinary beyond their little clearing. (Search=21)

Vestrati
Friday August 29th, 2003 5:22:48 AM

Settling down with the others, the first group that's accepted him for some time, Vestrati feels a little more at ease.

"Me? I'm from out in the plains as far as I know, been an orphan all my life, just doing what I can to survive, been all over the plains, but some of this stuff I'm seeing with you is completely new to me."

Dm Anthony
Friday August 29th, 2003 11:14:18 AM

Looking at Jake the walker rubs his stomach and grunts.

"UMMMMMMM Piggie bits, haven't had good piggie bits in ages."

However when Gry comes back his face lights up in a huge grin. He quickly pulls out a knife and rushes over to some small sharp grasses called Scrub grass. you all know them to be slightly poisonous if stepped on and the spikes impale your skin, the effect is kin to poison ivy. Being very careful he peels back the fibers to the side leaving only the sharp stalk in the middle. Casting a quick spell a fire is started and he quickly blackens the stalks over the fire. Then he stabs the grubs and tubers onto the stalks and roasts them over the fire. The smell is delicious, and when you taste them they are delicious. Smiling he says.

"The fire neutralizes the poison and turns it into a wonderful spice."

When Trellus and Jake question him about the Rapke and the barons men he goes quiet for a moment. Quietly chewing a grub he stares of into space. It seems as if perhaps he isn't going to answer, then finally he looks up.

"It is a very wise question young one. I can see why she thinks so highly of you all. Both perceptions are correct. The plains are born from the heart of the Wold, in response to a great evil and wrong that was done. It was the Wolds way of fighting back. EVERYTHING that lives upon the grasses is connected in a most direct and intimate way. In the Wold at large all ecosystems are interconnected."

As he talks he draws with a charcoal stump on a flat blade of grass.

"Outside the plains this bird is connected to this flower." as he draws a little hump.

"This insect connected to both." he adds a loop to the humps.

"This tree to the flower, this flower to this insect." More humps, loops and swirls.

"This bush to this bird to this mouse to this bird to this fish to this beaver, to this bear, and back to this bush." The drawing is complete and looks like a flower of loops and swirls and humps making a large circle.

"Everything interconnected to something else which connects to something else, which connects it to the larger system." Looking up his eyes search all of yours for understanding. Seeing it he continues.

"Those who choose the grass dream know that here things are different." he draws a simple line circle. "Everything upon the Grass Sea and the crystal range must have everything else. A simple line connects one thing to the next. With out each proceeding thing." he rubs his finger though the line breaking the circle. "The system fails and everything dies." The Plains are a great imbalance nothing balancing the next, but only proceeding the next. Because of that those with minds have had to create balance where there is none. This is the essence of the second circle, to create balance where none existed. The Barons men strive to wipe all life off the plains but theirs. You in the past have prevented that mission. You have created a system of checks and balances, predator and prey where there was none. The raiders try to steal so that others must protect. The Climbers build so that others may re-grow. The Brotherhood attempts to reclaim the land so that the land may struggle against them. Balance where there was none." smiling again he sighs, I have done a poor job of answering your question lad, the answer is yes, they are father and child and yes they are parasites. They are what they are, and what we with minds can make them to be. We create balance where there was none."

When Sterlin asks his question the walker looks right at him and smiles almost darkly, and frighteningly. It is now that you realize up until now you have never seen his teeth. They are stained blood red. "It is a choice, like everything else in life. It is a choice an individual makes. Walkers choose to love the plains above all else and to become a part of them in a way that no other but the Manfri understand or comprehend. It is to live a double life. A life of flesh and bone and a life of wind and the gently wavering of the grass. It is a choice for each individual to make on his own.

When Flea mentions lodging for the evening the Walker shakes his head and smiles. "No my friends, I have guests so rarely I would like to have you rest in comfort this night." With that he pulls out something that looks like a wooden rod and mumbles something under his breath. A doorway appears in front of you all hung over with hide, behind the door is a vast cave made over in Manfri style, comfortable rock beds are inside and a warm fireplace. The Walker steps inside and holds the door open. "Well don't just sit there, come inside.
