pulling out 2 gold, he places it in the lads pocket. then, jingling his purse tightly in his hand (not being flamboyant, but discreet) he says: the mans name, what he looks like and where were you suppose to follow us to before heading to this man?

Looking around to see if anyone is joining him, upon seeing that he is alone on his journey to the docks he rethinks this idea, nobody should even look alone up here and walks closer to where Vorelle is standing.
Remembering her reluctance to talk he just gives her a nod of the head, taking his bow from his back and checking the string returning it, he then resumes scanning the area for trouble (spot 15 listen 14)
Theodore Wednesday August 27th, 2003 2:00:41 PM
Theodore lets Cade lead him up the stairs to the above ground. His heart beats rapidly. He places a hand over his breast, as if he could will himself to calm down.
He goes where Cade guides him, listening to the other man speak, nodding every once in a while.

The liontaur nods as Olyn asks his questions. She agrees with each query in turn, and encourages the boy to be forthcoming.
[Rolled an 18 on an Aid Other Diplomacy check to give Olyn a +2 on his attempts.]
Then Vauhwyt adds a couple questions of her own. "What's your name, lad? What exactly did the man tell you? Do you belong to a house?" Then the liontaur makes the boy an offer. "I stand out, so when you see me, stop by. Once a day I'll give you a silverr. And if you have interesting news, I'll give you a gold if I like it. Keep it quiet like and we'll get along just fine."
After getting as much from the boy as she can, Vauhwyt asks Olyn to help her discreetly pass word of events on to the others, person to person.
[OOC: I already took 20 gp off Vauhwyt's PC sheet to pay for whistles and bribes. The money to the boy can come from that.]
Cade d20+2=22 d20+3=15 Wednesday August 27th, 2003 7:20:39 PM
Getting close to the top of the stairs, Cade notices that his companion is looking a bit nervous. He pauses at the top of the stairs, within sight of the others, but not outside into the Above and leans back against the wall of the sewer entrance, facing Theo and the rest of the group. He looks to the young wizard and smiles.
"Been out in the Above much?" he asks in a concerned, but friendly manner. Cade looks Theo up and down, gives him a friendly pat on the shoulder and says, "Ahh, you'll be fine."
"I remember this one time when I was up in the Above..." and Cade begins weaving a tale that seems to have involved bar fight, a rather attractive barmaid, and her father who happened to be the owner of the establishment. During the tale, Cade's hands and arms are moving to try and accentuate his story, all to try and help distract the young wizard from whatever is troubling him. (Perform check of 22). Cade seems to be in rare form with his story telling today as he even gets a few laughs from some passers-by at the more humorous parts of the tale.
While telling the story, Cade is watching their surrounds, but again being secretive with his glances. (Spot check 15)
Vorelle d20+5=22 Wednesday August 27th, 2003 7:27:42 PM

DM Jan Thursday August 28th, 2003 12:59:41 AM
Olyn's gold disappears as soon as its handed out. The boy wipes his nose and answers a few of Olyn's and Vauhwyt's questions while those of the others close enough listen.
"Man's name? He sez it was -" looking around, " - Ba'Bac. He's 'one of those'." The boys head jerks toward an armory shop. Two tall, muscular, gruff-looking half orcs are reading a sign that says - ORCISH ARMOR AND WEAPONS EX GOLD DRAGON CONQUEST PRE WORN GOING CHEAP - COME INSIDE!
"You want to be careful," says the lad. "He's got scars all over him. Frightened me, but you pay more. Anyway - he wanted me to just follow 'the lion-chicky' - that's his disrespect ma'am, not mine, and then tell him what you were doing. Said to meet him at the end of the day at the Blue Eel."
A cheeky grin was beginning to make itself apparent, but that disappears for a moment, as he adds - "Don't ask me about my House. Pay me, chop my feet off - I wouldn't tell you. My name's Tam, but don't ask me about my House."
He seems interested in Vauhwyt's proposition, and providing no further questions are asked, he promises to keep his eyes and ears open, and then dives off into the crowd. (I'll insert any other answers if needed in the next post.)
Zayne, Rose, Cade, Theodore and Vorelle see nothing to suggest that anyone is taking an unhealthy interest in whats going on, apart from a few passing laughs at Cade's antics. Folk seem to be going about their business, and - if everyone looks down at their garments and hands, they may see a little dust beginning to collect.
This town didn't have over fifty bath houses for nothing!
Anyone who's a local will know where the Blue Eel is. They'll also know the reputation of the Backstab Quarter and the posturing necessary to keep the predators at bay. Body language was everything.
What now?
Theodore Thursday August 28th, 2003 12:11:01 PM
Cade does a good job at calming Theodore down. He smiles at Cade's story and even laughs at the more boisterous parts.
"Thank you," says Theodore. "I feel much better now. Thank you...friend." The last word rolls off of his tongue awkwardly, as if it were unfamiliar.
After the boy leaves Vauhwyt and Olyn, Theodore glances at Cade and moves his head closer to the other man. "Perhaps one of us should be at the Blue Eel tonight, preferrably one who the half-orc wouldn't notice. That rules out Vauhwyt, of course."
Olyn Thursday August 28th, 2003 2:10:25 PM
urging Vauhwyt to continue walking and talking he asks: what now. do we go scope out the blue eel and wait for this man to show up or do we go ahead and go to the docks and look around or both?
Zayne Thursday August 28th, 2003 2:24:06 PM
After Olyn and Vauhwyt finish questioning the boy, and the boy leaves Zayne walks over to them and says "Maybe we should go someplace where we can talk." Motioning with his head away from the Backstab quarter.
Cade d20+3=21 Thursday August 28th, 2003 8:29:49 PM
Leaning in he speaks quietly with Theo. "I think that is a good idea, I am just trying to think who, preferably more than one, most likely was not noticed by the half-orc. We really need to discuss things with the others to help determine our course of action."
With that, he leans back and goes back to speaking of various small talk with the young wizard. He watches where the party goes and is ready to follow them, keeping a wary eye on their surroundings. (Spot check 21)
Vauhwyt Thursday August 28th, 2003 8:39:01 PM
The liontaur agrees that the group needs to confer, either by ducking into a hidey-hole or alley, or by passing the word from person to person.
"I think we should set an ambush for this 'Ba'Bac' fellow. Speaking as a simple lion-chicky, I think it is time to hunt the hunterr." Her grin shows her sharp teeth as her accent becomes more noticable.
"Who knows the Blue Eel? How many entrances and exits are therre? We should send the sneakiest pair of us in there to see if Ba'Bac is inside yet. We wait for him to make a move in or out and then -- Whammo!"
"If there are multiple exits, we station a watcher at each one. The watcher gives a signal when the time comes, and we all rush in. No elaborate plan -- just jump him. The best thing would maybe be a group grapple -- all of us together could pin him and ask some questions."
"Afterr, if he needs killing, we kill him."

She walks slowly along the street, past the various groups the party has formed into, trying to blend into the pedestrian traffic and maintain the illusion that this isn't a big interesting group of people. She's still got her eyes out for trouble.
(Hide 19, Spot 14)
DM Jan Friday August 29th, 2003 1:23:38 AM
The group talk amongst themselves, pondering the best action to take next.
Things to consider - The docks - could well be a safer place to look around. It's very busy currently. A lot of ships are in harbour. The half orc could be here in amongst a fairly large crowd and 'if' found - could be caught sooner rather than later.
The Blue Eel - some of the party have never been there. It could be more dangerous. If the boy is to be believed - is this where the group's quarry will 'definitely' appear? Here there could be time to investigate, stake out, plan.
As the group listen and watch out for trouble, the wind suddenly picks up, and a few specks of rain are felt.
Olyn Friday August 29th, 2003 8:50:49 AM
looking up when the wind starts to pick up and feeling a drop of water hit him on his face, Olyn looks almost pleased. then, realizing where he is now, looking around and seeing the vast open spaces and tons more people walking around, he gets a bit flustered in the face and puts a hand on Vauhwyt's shoulders to steady himself saying: I need to sit down before I get sick.
motioning over to an outdoor cafe, Olyn makes a beeline for one of the tables. ordering a warm mug of wine as he is sitting down.
folding his arms on the table, he places his head on them and lets out a deep sigh.
Vauhwyt d20+7=15 Friday August 29th, 2003 10:48:19 AM
Vauhwyt smiles at Tam as he goes. She hopes to see him again.
The liontaur helps to steady Olyn, and joins him in seeking a place to rest -- while keeping an eye out for the rest of the group.
She says, "This water is making you sick, my friend -- let's get you to the doc! Keep under cover from the rain!"
In this way she passes a secret message on to her new friends in earshot (Bluff check 15 to pass a secret message -- exactly what she needs!).
The message: "Let's hit the docks. Look for orc, keep discreet."
As soon as Olyn is recovered, she whispers, "Don't get too rattled. We have to be strong. We can get to the Blue Eel later. Let's search the docks first." She heads that way, with Olyn coming along, she hopes.
Zayne Friday August 29th, 2003 3:31:09 PM
Also joining them at a nearby table. "I think we should split up, there are seven of us. Three can go to the docks and then the other four can go check out the Blue eel."
Looking around at the group."I've been in the eel before, it's a rough place. I also think that if we do split up that you," motioning to Vauhwyt "should head to the docks because it seems this Ba'Bac knows who you are at least."
Vorelle Friday August 29th, 2003 5:35:25 PM
Vorelle drifts in toward the group at the cafe. She has lost sight of the halfling.
"Wh-wh-where's R-R-R-Rose?" she asks in an undertone.
Cade d20+3=7 d20+3=23 Sunday August 31st, 2003 11:25:03 PM
Cade walks towards an area by the cafe that the group is by, waving for the young wizard to join him.
"What would you prefer friend" he says to Theo, "would you prefer to go take a look at the docks, or perhaps go get a drink? I am thinking that we might take a quick look at the new wares that might be arriving at the docks and then go get a drink before things become too crowded at the pubs."
Cade continues to keep an eye and an ear on their surroundings. (Listen check 7, Spot check 23)
DM Jan Tuesday September 2nd, 2003 1:24:26 AM
The Docks are very busy. Cargo is being taken off ships, only to be replaced by outgoing bundles. There's a mishmash of people milling about here - wealthy merchants striking deals on the quayside, sailors of every rank and race; carts and their drivers pushing through the throng. A few offices in nearby buildings seem to be concerned with goods inward and outward, and passenger bookings.
As for the Blue Eel in the Backstab Quarter - it's lunchtime, and doing a roaring trade. Specials are boars head soup and crusty bread, and fish casserole.
((Folks let me know where you're headed in your next post.))
Vauhwyt Tuesday September 2nd, 2003 6:32:17 AM
Vauhwyt feels really strongly that splitting up is a sure route to death. As soon as Zayne mentions the idea, the liontaur's lips begin to curl into a most feline snarl. Her tail, held straight out, twitches slightly side to side. A bead of bright red sweat forms on her forehead and trickles down; she seems to draw herself up taller as she opens her mouth to speak.
"Look," she says fiercely, but in a low, quiet tone. "if we want to die -- and die fast -- splitting up is the way to go. You do not want to be outnumbered aboveground! Dividing our strength is a sure way to do that."
"We know this half orc will be at the inn laterr. Let us look for some info herre at this time, and then go together to the Blue Eel later on."
"We divide at our peril. You arre, of course, free to do as you will. I just think we should stick together."
Hearing Vorelle's soft words, the liontaur tries to spot all the members of the group, without being obvious about it. She does her best to discreetly communicate her suggestion that the whole group head to the docks to search for information.
Olyn Tuesday September 2nd, 2003 8:30:55 AM
slowly standing up, Olyn walks over and puts a gentle hand on Vauhwyt's back. with sweat on his brow, and cheeks reddened, Olyn speaks in gentle and reassuring tones: what our large friend here says is true, divide and we are conquered, together, we are a strong and a formidable force. let us finish our drink and go to the Docks. then we shall go to the Blue Eel for supper. but, and looking at Vauhwyt, before we do go there, I need to go back to the temple and gather my things. I do not venture out like some of you with arms and armor. I think when we go there tonight, my items will be needed and would like to better prepared.
Theodore Tuesday September 2nd, 2003 12:04:58 PM
Theodore follows Cade over to the cafe and plops down in one of the seats. "I believe that I would like to see the docks, friend. I haven't been above ground too often and have never seen the docks before. After that, a nice cold glass of milk would be most welcome." He smiles at Cade reassuringly.
Zayne Tuesday September 2nd, 2003 3:56:15 PM
"I didn't mean to upset you, it was merely a suggestion.",spoken with haste and humility.
"I was just saying that there are seven of us and we could split into two groups." After a moment, "But I see that the rest of you think it would be best to go together so thats what we should do. Up here alone is asking for trouble and thats something I don't do."
Cade Tuesday September 2nd, 2003 5:43:44 PM
"'Tis agreed then" Cade says, "let us be off to the docks then so that we will have enough time so that we can beat the crowds when we return for a drink this eve." And with that Cade slowly rises and stretches, again pacing themselves to follow discreetly behind Vauhwyt on their way to the docks.
During the trip to the docks Cade speaks with Theo of goods and wares that may be arriving at the docks, again using conversation to attempt to blend them into the crowd.
DM Jan Wednesday September 3rd, 2003 1:53:05 AM
And so....
The group make their way to the Docks. (I'm assuming Vauhwyt and Olyn together, Zayne and Vorelle loosely together, Cade and Theo together deep in conversation, and Loretta skipping in and out of the crowd but staying close.)
The quay stretches the full length of the docks, and four wharfs lead off the quayside, out into into the water. Each wharf has a full contingent of boats and ships of various classes tied alongside.
**Local Knowledge** Entering the Docks from the eastern side (as the party are doing) means entering the roughest area of the Docks. The far western side of course leads toward the Palace of the Prince of Thieves, and while still retaining the Dock's overall boisterous character, was a little more gentille and civilized.
Looking at the crowd, in some cases it's fairly easy to pick out some of the various House members - the fearsome leather and metal-clad Wolves, the more flambouyant Keys; Teeth - born pirates and privateers, completely at home with all the sea-going types; small groups - in size and stature, of dwarven Knives. Darts and Cloaks are much harder, if almost impossible to spot. Halflings are everywhere. Added to the mix - travelers, rich and poor from a number of nations. One thing is apparent though - there's an 'attitude' that seems to prevail, covering everyone with a protective mantle of toughness.
A row of buildings faces the water and the boats tied up at the wharfs - offices of traders and shipping and travel companies.
As the group ventures into the throng, perhaps they're wondering what an assassin would be doing here? Is this how he got in? Is this how he's going to get out? Or maybe he's subcontracting...
Alongside the entrance to the first wharf - a group of tough-looking human males are stood eyeing up the crowd. There are six of them.
Three of them abruptly block Cade and Theo's path. The other three split up and start to move around and behind. One of them gives the two an evil grin. "Come looking for work have ye? Lost your mommies? We're looking for recruits. The sea'll make men of ye. Step aboard an' sign up! An' don't think we'll take no fer an answer!"
It becomes immediately obvious to the entire group, that Cade and Theodore are being press ganged!

She'll try to make it look accidental for as long as she can, but basically she's going to keep him from getting into position. She won't pull a weapon unless she has to, knowing that she can have her handaxe in her hand almost as quickly as thought (Quick Draw feat).

Perhaps you could find more able bodies elsewhere today that could use a good bit of sea air, but I'm afraid we have other work we must attend to" (Diplomacy check of 17) Cade says to the rough looking human addressing them.
With that, Cade moves Theo around to the side of him away from where the group is coming from, attempting to get around and away from them. While backing away Cade raises his hands in gesture of not wanting trouble, in actuality getting his hands ready for a possible punch at the nearest thug if they pursue (Improved Feint, Bluff check 9).
While backing away Cade takes a quick scan of the crowd to locate where everyone is and to locate any others trying to get involved. (Spot check 5)
Vauhwyt Wednesday September 3rd, 2003 8:36:33 PM
Seeing that Cade is taking charge of the situation, Vauhwyt keeps away from the confrontation and pretends not to notice it. She tries to keep a low profile. In reality, all four of her legs are tense as she is ready to spring up if need be. She listens intently to the encounter.
DM Jan d20+3=17 Thursday September 4th, 2003 2:57:27 AM
Olyn figures this looks like trouble and casts Bless. He could well be right. The party feels a slight tingle as his spell settles upon them.
Zayne finds a stack of packing cases about six feet high, about 5 feet away from cade, Theo and the thugs, that will get him a better vantage point, and climbs up.
Vorelle blocks one of the three villains to the rear, who attempts to shove her out of the way unceremoniously and get her out of his face. (Reflex save to avoid - DC 10)
Cade uses his 'gift of the gab' to try and extricate himself and Theo out of the scenario. The man who spoke to him blinks and hesitates, the one next to him says - "Ooooh, he's got some backbone. Thats the type we need." The other of the three frowns and exclaims - "Hey he's gonna hit ye! Grab 'em!" He puts up his own fists - ready to fight, and then charges forward.
Vauhwyt keeps her eye on things and get ready to spring.
Nearby, a young man busy loading up a cart, pauses and see's a thug attempting to shove Vorelle out of the way. Two other villains (the other two thugs at the back) seem to be closing in on her, too.
Vorelle (Bless, AC15) d20+5=20 d20+5=7 Thursday September 4th, 2003 3:10:08 AM
Vorelle nimbly sidesteps the attempt to knock her down (Reflex 20). She remains in the man's way, hopefully keeping him out of position.
She tries to glance around to see where other people are positioned, but finds herself pretty well occupied with what she's doing (Spot 7).
She will not throw the first punch or strike the first blow, but if fighting breaks out she will pull her handaxe.
Vauhwyt d20+11=24 Thursday September 4th, 2003 9:54:42 AM
Seeing that the situation is about to get rough, Vauhwyt leaps up and rushes over.
"Begone, scoundrels!" she shouts. Her soprano voice does not command much respect, but her claws, fully extended, and her hands, clenched in fists, might. "Leave good folk alone and be off! You are no better than slavers, and I hate slavers!" Her scowl is harsh to behold, and her face is twisted in anger.
Curiously, as the liontaur holds her fists ready to punch, observers might see a trickle of blood running across her fingers, although she has not thrown a punch.

Devlin takes a break from loading the cart to watch the action with a passing interest. After all, it was something that he had seen about a hundred times since he started working down on the docks. Just a part of the dangers of walking along the docks nowadays. His interest rises however as the man attempts to shove the woman. "Well, we can't have that," he thinks to himself before seeing her easily sidestep the man. This brings a smile to his lips then.
Seeing the two men make their way to close in on her though, he reckons its finally time to take a longer break from loading the cart and help out. Stepping out in front of the two men with his hands out in front of him, he says, "I think I'd look for easier quarry somewhere else if I were you?" (Intimidate=9)

Up at the front -
Thug # 3 - already commited, growls at Cade trying to out-manouvre him and throws a mighty punch. (Hits AC21 - 5 non-lethal damage). Thug #1 - the leader, starts to back off - he has an arrow aimed toward him, courtesy of Zayne, and he has Vauhwyt right in his face. His eyes flit from side to side - they don't look the same predatory eyes as they did earlier, and aggressive as he might be - he wasn't stupid and had figured out the odds, not to mention the intimidating aura of the liontaur. Thug #2 suddenly finds himself blinded by a rather spectacular splash of colour that leaps from Theodore's hands. He staggers back, and then falls to the ground bleeding as Rose's dart hits him in the thigh.
In the middle - Olyn nimbly positions himself as best he can in order to get to whoever needs him.
At the back -
The fun is only just getting started - Thug #4 decides to punch Vorelle out of the way, and he swings forward with a fist, missing the nimble ranger. Thugs #5 and #6 suddenly find themselves confronted by Devlin. They smile - and both throw a punch at him, too! Both swing wide!
Both Devlin and Vorelle can see nasty looking daggers at the three men's belts.

Zayne d20=19 Friday September 5th, 2003 4:47:06 PM
Deciding not to put his arrow between the eyes of his target for now(holding action)he once again raises his voice above the din "I suggest that you back off and head back to your ship," withall the bravado he can muster(bluff 19)"if you don't you all die here and now!"
Cade (Blessed, AC 15, HP 5, 5 subdual damage) d20+3=9 d3+1=3 d6=1 Friday September 5th, 2003 11:30:54 PM
Staggerring from the blow, Cade takes a moment to recover, but luckilly he recovers quickly.
Seeing that Theo has join in the fight, Cade moves to a position to flank the rufian who struck him.
Once in position Cade, he swings at the ruffian (Attack 10 - forgot the bless) but he must still be dazed from the blow of the ruffian.
(Rolled damage just in case they have a 10 ac, 4 subdual damage total with sneak attack)

The liontaur feels paralyzed for a moment that stretched into infinity. She wants to move, to act, to fight, but she seems to have lost touch with her own body!
Then it all comes back, and she rejoices as she regains control of her limbs. In a wild burst of frenzied activity, like a spring coiled too tight and then released, both her fists and both her forepaws lash out!
[OOC: Two fists attack at -4 and -6 without the two-weapon fighting feat; the two paws are at -5 as secondary attacks. And her normal attacks are at +2 with the bless.]
And all those extremities swing wildly through air, a harmless explosion that touches nothing but the breath exhaled by the participants!
[hit AC 0, 1, 6, and 6! LOL!]

standing behind Vauhwyt when she goes off the deep end, Olyn smiles at the Thugs and sternly says:
That, my friends, was a display of her talent. As per my request she did not strike any of you but if you continue with this assault I will be forced to release her to her full potential. Does each of you wish to meet Gargul this day? or would you prefer to take this bag of gold and be on your way. and leave us alone?

ok. sorry for the interruption here, just wanted to clarify something.
when using a weapon, if you look at the weapon chart you will see it lists damage, range blah blah....it also tells you a crit #.
ie a dwarven waraxe has a dam of d10 and a crit of X3.
what that means is. if you roll a natural 20, you enter a threat and you roll again. if you hit the creature with your next roll, not a natural 20 but hit, you successfully crit'd your attack and would roll 3d10s.
some weapons have 19-20 which again means, if you roll a natural 19 or 20, you would roll again and if you successfully hit that creature, your attack was a crit and would roll the appropriate # of dice.
and yes, if you are now getting , with a longsword, d8+2 for damage, you would roll 2 d8 +4 for damage on a crit.
hope this helps you. if anymore ? email me at clangden_milo@hotmail.com and i will assist you further.

The skirmish continues!
At the back, Devlin - reluctant to use force, nevertheless strikes forth with a successful punch against Thug #6. Vorelle aims the blunt end of her axe at #4 and misses. However - he yells out "OWW!" as Rose's dart sinks into his thigh.
In the middle, Olyn's healing touch reaches Cade, causing a lot less of those tweety birds to fly around the rogue's head. (I think we're best avoiding held actions if we can - its hard to squish them into this messageboard format of roleplay)
At the front it's chaos - fists and paws flying everywhere - as Cade misses, Vauhwyt misses, but ooh! Theo lands a firm blow on #3!
Thug #2 is down and unconscious.
Then - a shout comes from the leader (#1), who's eyes are moving between Zayne - poised and ready to fire from on top of the crates - and the coin purse which Olyn is holding aloft. A mixture of threat and promise, and the fact that he's one man down, has him signalling his men to stop.
Thug #5 backs off looking most disappointed at not being able to rearrange Devlin's nose - or at least try.
The men remain guarded, but take two steps back and look to their leader.
"'ow much did ya say?" he asks, his practiced eyes and ears appearing to give him a good idea of whats in that bag , which is more than he makes in six months.
Olyn Wednesday September 10th, 2003 8:04:07 AM
saying loud enough for the whole group to hear: Stop and step back.
turning back to the leader: tell your boys to leave, and do not follow us for a reunion, and I will give you this bag with 40 gold coins. continue this endeavor against my friends and I, and I promise to say a blessing over your graves.

Vauhwyt d20+11=28 d20+7=10 Wednesday September 10th, 2003 10:02:03 AM
Vauhwyt's jaw drops at the mention of the 40 gold, but she turns that expression into a toothy grin as she taps her claws on the packed-dirt ground. She addresses the press-gang members, saying harshly:
"Instead of trying to impress honest folk into your scurvy line of work, I suggest that you flea-bitten ship-rats take this generous offerr -- a very generous offerr -- and get out of here fast. Or my claws will make an impression in your mangy hides to make you rue the day you tried to enslave the innocent!"

Theodore feels a little tingly inside from having landed a blow to one of the bullies, however, he stays his hand from another swing, waiting to see what the reaction of the scoundrels is to Olyn's offer of gold.
Vorelle Wednesday September 10th, 2003 11:50:10 AM
Vorelle freezes, axe poised, and listens to what's going on with the leader. She does not look in that direction, however, keeping her eyes on the thug she was struggling with.

DM Jan Thursday September 11th, 2003 12:52:25 AM
For one horrible moment, that seems to stretch on for an interminably long time, various members of the group remain poised and ready - just in case, and then in an instant, its over. Pure body language tells them that for now at least, they're safe. Zayne hops down from the crates and re-joins the others. Vorelle, Devlin and Rose watch as the three that attacked them, back off and walk to stand at the front with their leader. Cade and Theo get some fine scowls thrown their way, but nothing else.
"Hand over the gold, pointy ears," growls the lead thug toward Olyn, being careful not to get too close to Vauhwyt. "With that kind of money I can BUY new crew men." He glances down at his fallen man. "We'll probably need three now instead of two. A cursed day this has been, aye I'll tell ya."
Vorelle, Rose, and probably Zayne, from his vantage point, will have noticed they have been helped out at the rear by Devlin.
Despite all the fisticuffs, the dock side in Dirt City has continued it's normal turmoil. A few that paused to watch, are now drifting away and getting on with their business.
It's now past lunchtime, and some stomachs will be a growlin'... also, that fine black dust that gives the city its name, is starting to leave its mark in the form of smudges on hands, tiny little lines of muck in between fingers and embedded in wrinkles; the occasional mote in an eye, and leaving a slight layer on top of cloaks and fur alike. Such is the way of things outside.
Vauhwyt d20+7=27 Thursday September 11th, 2003 7:23:14 AM
Still trying to maintain the deception that the group is not an organized party, Vauhwyt speaks for the benefit of any curious ears nearby.
"Well met, strangers all! It does my heart good to see citizens come to the aid of those they do not know, simply to offer assistance in need. Perhaps Dirt City is changing, for the betterr."
"Well, now I shall be back to my business, and each to his own. Good luck in your private pursuits, as you intended before this encounterr!"

The young wizard keeps his fists clenched, not able to accept the fight is over until the ruffians retreat with Olyn's gold.
Afterwards, he turns to Cade. With and exasperated huff, he seems to collapse in upon himself to return to his awkward teenage self. He smiles at his friend, "I gave him a good one, didn't I?"
"I suppose we should continue our search, then?"
Zayne Thursday September 11th, 2003 1:22:31 PM

Devlin Thursday September 11th, 2003 1:34:06 PM
With the leader taking the offer of gold to avoid the fight and the others following suit, Devlin smiles at the men before him and gives a deep bow before a hearty laugh. "Perhaps another time, gentlemen?" he says as they walk away.
Devlin's smile grows ever wider as the newcomer offers him a tankard of ale for his troubles. "Now that's the best thing I've heard all day," he says as he firmly clasps the strangers hand. "I don't think I need be alone on the docks the rest of today anyway, those gents tend to have long memories if you know what I mean!"
"Where to for that tankard?"
Cade Thursday September 11th, 2003 8:05:35 PM
"A well placed punch my friend, I thank you deeply for it" Cade says with a smile.
Now that the excitement has passed, Cade notices his stomach grumbling. Seeing Zayne and his new friend Cade motions for Theo to join them and says loud enough for the others in the party to overhear, "Perhaps we should get some food, we might even find a nice catch of the day, or at least some good stories and company."
Approaching Zayne and Devlin, Cade says to them, "Perhaps you folks would like to join us in some lunch. Or at least a drink and time to get some of the dirt off our clothes."

"Another time, eh sweetheart?" One of the thugs gives Vorelle a wink, his eyes shifting to that hand axe. Devlin's comment gets him the best scowl one of the other thugs can muster. The thugs move back toward the first wharf, carrying their unconscious fellow with them - their leader counting up the cash in the pouch.
After a few moments, it's as though the altercation never happened. In the distance the press gang look to be re-grouping. Their objective still seems to be the appropriation of persons for their crew, but it certainly looks like this particular group won't be bothered again.
In an attempt to look fragmented, Vauhwyt and Olyn move ahead along the dock, while Cade, Theo, Zayne and Devlin get together and talk over perhaps getting something to eat and drink and/or continuing the search.
Vorelle keeps to the rear, her eyes and ears open. As far as she can tell - no one seems to be paying any particular attention to the groups actions.
Rose will be able to retrieve her darts, which were pulled out and thrown down.
As for what next? - There don't appear to be any taverns right along the quayside - just passage booking offices and merchant centers, and a few vendors selling bread and fried fish from carts.
Most of the food and drink is to be had in the Backstab quarter.
Is the docks liable to have any info on the half orc? Well..... that depends on what the half orc was doing here - if he was here, and maybe he was at some point. Right now there's no sign of him.
Olyn Friday September 12th, 2003 2:54:59 AM
Vauhwyt, my friend, perhaps we should go to the quarter, and get ourselves something to eat. if anyone was watching, they know by that altercation just who is in the group and who isnt. besides, i would like to meet our new companion and fill my empty belly at the same time. <thumbing towards Devlin>
and i need to sit, my head is still a little queezy and this dirt is starting to annoy me.

She stops at a vendor's cart and buys bread by pointing at it and handing money to the vendor. She eats quickly, to minimize the amount of dirt she'll have to swallow. It's still better than eating in a strange inn.
Cade d20+3=20 d20+3=15 Sunday September 14th, 2003 10:12:54 PM
"Well we would have to leave the docks if we want anything substantial. I leave the decision up to you folks on if we should just grab a quick bite to eat at a nearby vendor, or travel to another quarter for someplace we could sit down."
With that Cade waits for the others to decide, as he is not picky on eating now or only having something quick to suppress his hunger. While speaking he keeps an eye (spot chck 20) and an ear (listen check 15) to his surroundings.

DM Jan Monday September 15th, 2003 2:28:22 AM
The general consensus seems to be to go and eat, as hunger and a dip in adrenalin play havoc on folks' appetites.
There is a mid point along the dockside which leads into the Backstab Quarter - it's throng of people milling about, going about their business, legal or otherwise - and seeing as most things tended to go up at street level, chances of that business being of a dubious nature were probably higher than most.
Certain things become obvious -
- Everyone is going to have to watch their pockets and steel their nerves. - Vorelle, very apprehensive at venturing into a public tavern, has hung back from the group.
As for eats, two Tavern signs are in sight - The Blue Eel, and the Jolly Roger. The Jolly Roger is closer - it looks 'interesting' from the outside, and even moreso when a large fellow with a red beard drags two other men outside and throws them down on the black gritted cobbles. "You're both barred!" he declares and disappears back inside. One of the men thrown out gives a large belch, and then he and his companion burst into a fit of drunken giggles.
At this point, the group may be considering its options -
It's approaching mid afternoon. This might be a point to get together and decide on a plan of action. So far the Docks have proved fruitless in their search - was info to be found out there? Had the half orc booked passage anywhere, which might give an indication as to his comings and goings? Had that press gang seen anything - heck, did anyone dare ask 'em? What about the man who'd just joined them - he'd been working there by the looks of it. What about the Blue Eel - entry and exit points etc? And ultimately - what is the group's intention if they spot their quarry? Is he likely to be dangerous? Will he have friends?
It seems there is a lot to ponder over lunch, including where to eat it.
Olyn Monday September 15th, 2003 11:16:31 AM
turning to the group he says: well, Vauhwyt is most definately known, as well as me. being we were being followed. so if we show up in the eel the mark might be on to us knowing we are on to him. BUT, if lets say Cade or Vorelle goes in, and scouts around a bit, then, we'd have an idea of what the inside is like, and maybe perhaps if this fellow is in there including the half orc. AND, they can also get some grub to go, and bring it to us.....let's say.....there<pointing to some crates that would be good to sit on>
Zayne d20+4=23 d20+4=11 Monday September 15th, 2003 11:25:51 AM
Cautiously eyeing the Blue Eel, then looking to his companions, "What do you think the Roger or the Eel?"
Thinking to himself "An attempted double murder ,an asassination plot, and a fight above. What a day, and it's barley noon."
Checking his surroundings for anything out of the ordinary( spot 23 listen 11) not realizing his actions, he rests his hands on the handles of his axes.
Theodore Monday September 15th, 2003 2:58:26 PM
Theodore says to Cade, "Didn't the boy say he was to meet the half-orc in the evening? Or am I mistaken on that assumption?" The young wizard purses his lips as if lost in thought.
"I personally would feel much more relaxed at the Jolly Roger, right now. Plus, we don't need to show our faces around somewhere that our opponent might frequent...anyway, that would be my reasoning," he quickly adds.
Devlin Monday September 15th, 2003 3:05:04 PM
Devlin listens intently to the conversation going around from his newfound companions, wondering what it could all mean. He obviously had no idea what he was stepping into when he attempted to help out. All he wanted now was a couple of tankards of ale to wash the dirt away and make the morning appear a bit less like a waste.
"What's all this talk about boys and half-orcs, mark's and assumptions? If its information you want, perhaps I can help you, I've spent quite a few hours on the docks the last few days. Perhaps a tankard in the Jolly Roger will get us going?" The young man looks to the others, doubly curious now as to what they are all about.
Vauhwyt Monday September 15th, 2003 10:12:48 PM
The liontaur shrugs, and addresses the person who came to their aid. She speaks softly, in an effort to be discreet.
"We seek some information, in an effort to right a wrong. We are trying to find out whatever we can about a half-orc, with a limp, who breathes like he s short of breath."
She twitches her tail from side to side as she thinks about what to say.
"We believe that he might be a dockworkerr. Or that he has worked ships in the past. And we know where he will be this evening -- the Blue Eel. But first we wanted to try to find out morre."
Devlin might hear traces of a liontaur accent in her words. Perhaps it betrays her nervousness at being so open with a person she does not know.
"Does any of this ring a bell, strangerr? You have helped us before, and we would be grateful for your help again."
"Now, we know the half-orc is onto us -- onto ME, at any rate. So we are trying to be covert, and not walk in one big lump, and look as if we were not togetherr."
As this conversation is taking place, Vauhwyt enters the Jolly Roger, has a drink, and sits with Devlin for a moment. She hears him out, listening carefully. Then she rises to all four feet and departs, not wanting to leave Vorelle alone outside for long.
Cade d20+3=9 Monday September 15th, 2003 10:49:36 PM
Seeing everyones concerns, and thinking it too early to head to the Eel Cade says, "I think the Roger sounds like a good place for a meal. Perhaps we'll visit the Eel later."
With that he enters the Jolly Roger, taking a moment to look around at it's occupants before sitting at a table and looking for some form of service.
Vorelle d20+5=6 Monday September 15th, 2003 11:07:20 PM
Vorelle will remain in the docks area for now, looking for the half-orc or any suspicious activity [spot 6, natural 1].
DM Jan Tuesday September 16th, 2003 1:33:46 AM
The Jolly Roger proves to be full of sailor types - raucous, windburned, enjoying their time ashore. The language is colourful, and its a bit of a crush to get to a table, but once inside - food is served. It's plain fare and costs a copper. Broth, with some kind of meat in it, served with fat chunks of fresh bread. There's plenty of ale for those who want it, plain water for those who don't.
Every now and then - a fight starts, tankards are thrown, a table is hurled. ((Everyone in the Jolly Roger - DEX check DC15 or take 1 DAM from flying debris))
Gossip abounds - who's outbound, who's inbound, who's been keel-hauled for insubordination, which captains are the best/worst, and in particular - the gossip de jour seems to be the fate of two shipmates on 'Beligerence' at the first wharf, who thought they could lift the purse from a passenger - "idiots they were, ain't no one gonna mess with that one."
Meanwhile, outside (for Vorelle and later Vauhwyt after talking to Devlin?) - there is still no half orc to be seen. Vorelle gets a few bawdy comments thrown her way, but nothing too serious. In the distance, that press gang can be seen, although they seem to be a lot less heavy handed in their recruiting of passers-by than they had before.
The afternoon draws on, the sky begins to darken as the night creeps in. Dwarven lamp-lighters start making their rounds. Folk on the dockside start to drift toward the Quarter, leaving ship guards behind.

Theodore tries to juke and jive to avoid the flying tankards (dex check is 10) but is unsucessful.
Wide-eyed, he sits to take his meal and leave as soon as is humanly possible.
Devlin d20+3=20 Tuesday September 16th, 2003 10:57:36 AM
Having spent some time in the Jolly Roger lately, Devlin appears to have no trouble dodging the flying debris from the myriad of skirmishes that break out. "Don't you just love this place?" he says with a smile to the liantaur that followed him in. "Helps you feel alive!"
"How do I know your intentions are honorable with this fellow? I could be facing retribution from him or others for telling you what I know. Why don't you tell me why you ask about him and I'll weigh that against what I do know. Fair enough?"
He takes another long drink of his ale before setting the tankard on the table before him, a smile on his face.
Vauhwyt d20+2=20 Tuesday September 16th, 2003 1:04:02 PM
Vauhwyt frowns and answers Devlin. "If you know him at all, you know he is a bad one. He attempted the murder of two children and may be a paid assassin." She finishes her drink.
"We all need to talk, but this is too public a place. I'll scout out an alley or such where we can group and plan. I'll meet you all outside. Be discreet."
As Vauhwyt exits she easily ducks a flying mug and heads outside.
She looks for Vorelle, sees her, nods, but does not speak. Vauhwyt then looks around for an alley or private nook where the group could convene. After her search, she takes up a place in sight of the Jolly Roger's enterance, so that as the group emerges, she can direct them to the place she has found (if any).
"Then, once we are all together in private, we can plan our evening at the Blue Eel," she thinks.

Having been here before and know what to expect he dodges the debris.
Despite the laughter surrounding him he is troubled not only from the events of the morning but also the events that just transpired on the docks.
Joining Devlin in a tankard and listening to Vauhwyt speak, and trying to see if there is any trouble to the party (spot 10 listen 8) he is too distracted by his troubles and dodging projectiles.
Vorelle d20+5=15 Tuesday September 16th, 2003 2:26:51 PM
Vorelle remains at the docks, scanning the crowds [spot 15].
As evening falls, she works her way toward the inns. She stands outside the Blue Eel, hesitating. Her friends are probably inside, or will be there soon. She can join them--all she has to do is open the door and walk in and face all those eyes looking at her.....
She stays where she is, trying to muster her courage. Across the way she sees Vauhwyt exit the Jolly Roger, look around for a bit, then settle herself in the doorway. Not sure what that means, Vorelle stays where she is, glad to have an excuse not to venture into the Blue Eel.
Cade d20+3=8 d20+4=21 Tuesday September 16th, 2003 9:53:25 PM
Just as Cade is about to sit down, a tankard sails through the air catching him squarely in the shoulder. He stretches out his shoulder to relieve some of the sting of the blow and with a smile and a laugh to Theo he says, "I almost forgot what a good tavern was like."
After eating a quick meal, having decided it best not to think of what kind of meat might actually be in the stew, he says to Theo "I will meet you outside in a short while". With that he takes his tankard of ale and wanders through the crowd within, speaking discreetly with a few to see if he can gather any useful information. (Gather Information check 21)
After speaking with the local patrons, Cade heads back outside to meet up with the others to tell them what information he was able to discover.
Olyn Tuesday September 16th, 2003 9:54:42 PM
before evening comes, Olyn suggests to the group that everyone returns to their homes and retrieves all the items they feel they might need for a confrontation.
I would like to be safe this time. some protection for myself seems appropriate at this junction.
if no objections, Olyn will return to the temple, don his armor, retrieve his morningstar, and then go back to the rendevous point.
DM Jan Wednesday September 17th, 2003 2:40:13 AM
The meal at the Jolly Roger proves to be a rowdy affair, with Theo and Cade hit by flying debris. Devlin, no stranger to this place and at ease here, gets some more information from Vauhwyt as to what the group (and possibly himself) is about while Zayne keeps his eye out for trouble. For now it seems the group are safe enough from spies - body language from fellow patrons certainly suggest no special interest in them.
As the evening draws closer Olyn dashes off to get his gear, expecting trouble. Meanwhile, Rose - keeping herself separate from the others, keeps her ears attentive to the surrounding gossip, overhearing that those sailors turned thieves died - violently and quickly, when they were discovered by their intended victim.
Cade decides to see if he can get any more info, and its funny how hard-as-nails sailor types clam up regarding certain subjects - fear flits across their eyes if talk heads toward 'who' did those killings. "I mean they were only after a few coppers - throats cut - both of 'em." "Who did it weren't from round here, either. No one knows where he came from, no one cares. Rumour has it, he'll be gone t'morra. Good riddance I say." "Aye!"
The party begins to fragment, slipping outside when the opportunity presents itself. For Theo it can't come fast enough, and Zayne can't help but feel drawn into something that casts a definite shadow of danger.
Outside, Vauhwyt spots Vorelle, see's she's okay, and looks for a quiet spot. There's two - stables right next to the Blue Eel, or a darkened, closed-for-business blacksmith's yard just across the street.
Vorelle, already outside the Blue Eel, summoning courage, on the awful prospect of having to enter this place, takes note that this establishment seems more up market than the Jolly Roger, especially going off the type of clientele going into the place - traders, businessmen, perhaps a ships captain or two, and the silk showing beneath a dark cloak suggest a few quite wealthy patrons, too.
By the time Olyn returns - it's pitch black in the alleys, and only the street lamps and passing carriage lamps keep the dark away from the main streets.
Vauhwyt d20+1=7 Wednesday September 17th, 2003 7:20:38 AM
The liontaur decides that the blacksmith's yard is the better place to strategize. She catches Vorelle's eye when no one is looking. "Let's all gather over therre," Vauhwyt suggests. "We can talk tactics before we go over to the Blue Eel."
When Olyn returns, she gets his attention as well. She asks him to pass the word to the people inside the Jolly Roger. "Please let folks know that we're gathering in the abandoned blacksmith's yard to decide how to go about our next piece of business. Please invite that Devlin fellow as well -- it seems like he might have more info about our target."
Vauhwyt tries to stay out of sight as she waits for more of her new comrades to emerge from the Roger. [OOC:Hide check 7. Oh well.] As each emerges, she tries to ensure that they head toward the gathering point.
When all are together in a dark corner of the closed yard, she whispers to the group, "We need a plan of action. We can't just enter the Blue Eel and fight the half-orc. It seems like a nicer class of tavern, and probably has bouncers and such."
"Maybe we can lure him into the adjacent stable yard. It's quiet therre -- we could have a little 'conversation' with him in peace." Vauhwyt flexes her claws as she says "conversation."
"Anyone have an idea on how to get him outside? Anyone know a good con? Anyone have a charm spell they can cast on the sly? Anyone able to disguise him or her self as the boy?"
"He'll be looking for me, so I'll have to stay outside in the stableyard, laying in wait."
"Ideas?"
Olyn Wednesday September 17th, 2003 7:46:00 AM
walking back in to the Roger, Olyn stands at the door until the others see him, then, with a smirk he looks at the door, back in the roger, then heads back out and to the blacksmith yard.
i have an idea. remember the lad that we caught trying to tail us? well, i can remember almost everything about him, and i have an ability granted to me by Wardd that will allow me to change my appearance. i could change myself to look like this boy, and then go in pretend to be him. perhaps gaining a bit of info to help us.
Devlin Wednesday September 17th, 2003 9:53:29 AM
As the day drags on and he spends more time with this strange group of folks, Devlin can tell that he's taken up with a group that certainly appears intent on providing excitement for him. This thought brings a welcome smile to his face.
"Well, I can see that your intentions are honorable with this fellow you ask about as it appears you are intent on not letting him be about his evil business. At least evil is all I could imagine him being about. I will tell you what I know then, although most of it you know already, just don't know it." The young man screws up his face at that exchange as he tries to untangle himself from his own circular logic.
"Anyway. You've heard inside the Roger about the killing of two crewmen after trying to steal from a passenger? Well, that passenger was the very same half-orc you now hunt. I heard about it earlier on the docks today. I saw him right after he did the deed. Ugly fellow came limping right by me on the docks, had blood on his shirt and all. He was heading toward the backstab quarter looking to book passage somewhere I heard, but didn't hear where. That was about an hour before you finally came along later."
Devlin shifts on his feet as he tells what he knows and looks at the odd arrangement of folks before him. He can't figure out who exactly is the leader of the group, so he directs his words toward the liontaur most of all.
"I'd be happy to help you out with this vermin, whatever you intend. Wasn't right what he did to those two crewmen, whether they was tryin' to steal from him or not. Teach em a lesson, yeah, but kill em, no. I will happily lend my sword to you."
He looks to the others to see if they are in agreement with that.
Vorelle d20+7=22 d20+5=9 d20+5=16 Wednesday September 17th, 2003 11:55:21 AM
Vorelle slips across to the darkened smithy yard (hide 22). She listens carefully to the strategy session, but also watches and listens for any eavesdroppers (spot 9, listen 16).
Theodore d20+2=12 Wednesday September 17th, 2003 12:42:14 PM
Theodore scoots out of the Roger in a hustle, holding his shoulder where a plate shattered. He quickly hurries over to the alleyway where Vauhwyt awaits the rest of the party.
He nods at Olyn's plan to disguise himself as the boy and adds, "Perhaps we should have someone go in and keep an eye on Olyn, in case things get out of hand. I have a spell that would allow me to deduce whether he had any magic on him or not. That could be helpful if we have to fight him, later."
The young wizard glances to Cade, hoping he will volunteer to accompany the still less-than-brave magician into the Blue Eel.
Zayne Wednesday September 17th, 2003 2:00:28 PM
Finishing off his tankard and what little food he was able to stomach,he joins the group in the smithy yard and listens to what Devlin has to say about the orc that has caused so much strife in so little time.
After Devlin is finished telling what he knows, but frowns when Olyn suggests going alone.
Speaking in a hushed voice "My friend I don't think it would be wise to go alone. I have an idea," looking to Devlin "How about you take him with you and say that he has information on us that he is willing to sell. Then we can and then we set a trap for him."
Cade d20+7=24 d20+3=5 Wednesday September 17th, 2003 10:58:37 PM
After speaking with some of the local patrons, Cade finishes his drink and then heads out of the tavern, he disappears into the shadows outside, (Hide check 24) making his way over to the rest of the party.
Once with the rest of the party, Cade whispers "Whatever we do, I think we may need to be quick about it. If the rumors are true, he will be leaving in the morning, I only see two reasons for him planning on leaving so quickly. First is that he is planning on doing his job this eve. The second is whatever job he may have been hired for is somewhere else. I myself am thinking that he may be planning on doing the deed this evening and then leaving the City as quickly as possible in the morning."
With that Cade continues to look around (Spot check 5) to see if anyone is watching them.

rose leaves the jolly roger (and hopes hopes the food won't make her sick) she sees vauhwyt and vorelle at the blacksmiths and heads over there, trying to keep out of sight. Once there she listens to the suggestions everyone makes "I think we should have a few people inside the inn, before the orc is expected to meet the boy that way we can keep an eye on things."

DM Jan Thursday September 18th, 2003 1:10:56 AM
In the dark of night, the group gathers in the blacksmith's yard and formulates a plan.
Can Olyn successfully disguise himself as Tam - the lad who'd been following them? It was certainly worth a try - the unknown factor being the half orc Ba'Bac's perceptions. Perhaps some subtle accompaniment WAS in order - just in case.
It was a given that they'd have to try and get their quarry outside - no Inn of this stature would allow any rough stuff by the looks of it.
Things were beginning to move fast. The information gathered suggested that tonight was the night - the time was now or never, or they'd blow it, and although the food eaten at the Jolly Roger was safe enough, nervous stomachs would still find something to grumble about. After all, the group was about to take on a known killer, who wouldn't think twice. It hardly made for good digestion.
This - was going to be NO PICNIC!
For those of the group on watch, they can safely give the all clear.
It is time to act.
Vauhwyt Thursday September 18th, 2003 7:02:26 AM
Listening to the ideas, Vauhwyt grinns broadly, and holds her tail straight up.
"These are great ideas!" she whispers happily. "So the plan is shaping up like this:"
"One, two or three people enter and take seats by the door. That's the Inside Group. Their job is to watch out for Olyn-in-disguise. If Olyn gets in trouble, one of them comes outside to warn the Outside Group, and the others go to Olyn's assistance."
"Two, Olyn enters the inn and finds and talks to the half-orc. Olyn lures the half-orc to the stableyard."
"Three, the rest of us are the Outside Group. We lay an ambush in the stableyard. When the half-orc enters, we jump him! The Inside Group should wait a round, then follow the half-orc outside -- they can attack from the rear one round laterr." Vauhwyt's accent, even whispering, reveals her excitement.
"Now, how can Olyn lure our prey to the stableyard? I suggest that he go up to Ba'Bac -- he's the one with lots and lots of scars -- and say something like this:"
I was following the lion-chicky, when this man came up to me. He wore a really big cloak, and I couldn't see much of him. He told me to lead his messenger to Ba'Bac for some news on the 'Wolf business' -- so I brought the messenger here. He didn't want to enter the inn -- 'Too public,' he said -- so I left him in the stableyard outside. You're supposed to go talk to him.
"With any luck, something like this will get BaBac outside. When he gets there, the Outside Group should be hiding in ambush, except for one person -- the 'messenger.' Ba'Bac walks up to the messenger, and we jump him!"
"Maybe Ba'Bac will bring a friend or three -- in which case we jump all of them! We have to grapple them because we do not want to kill them, and because we can't let them run away. Well, we can kill them after we find out what we need to know."
"What do you guys think of this plan?"
Olyn Thursday September 18th, 2003 7:20:02 AM
to the others Olyn states: when i change, we have no more than 10 minutes for me to be in this guise. i have my disguise kit with me and will do my best to look the part, and act the part of the boy.
once you are ready in the stables, and the 2 are ready to go in, i suggest 1 of the 2 enter, and find your seat. 1 minute later the other one enter and look around, wave to the first, and then go sit with him or her and act like chums out for fun. 2 minutes after that i will enter as the lad, look for Ba'Bac, and it starts. just a few seconds prior to me entering is when i will ask me god to affect the change and pray this ruse will work for his betterment. because as we all know, trickery is His thing.
oh, Vauhwyt. take my backpack here with you in the stables, less for me to affect change when i do go in disguise.
Zayne Thursday September 18th, 2003 11:22:34 AM
Thinking over what Vauhwyt and Olyn have to say, still preaking in a hushed voice "I am pretty sure that he knows who we all are. When we were taking Billi and Timmi back home we were all together. We can't be sure that little Tam was the only set of hired eyes. Plus word of what happened at the docks might have reached him, so I am assuming the worst in thinking that he knows all of us except for our new friend here." pointing to Devlin. " I think it might be too dangerous to send anyone inside..." out of nowhere his nose begins to twitch noticably, "We only really need one extra set of eyes, right. One of us can disguise ourselves and if Olyn gets into trouble that person can sound the alarm so to speak."
After a moment he goes back to surveying his surroundings.
Theodore Thursday September 18th, 2003 12:38:53 PM
"Whatever we decide, we better do so fast. Night is falling and he's going to wonder where Tam is. I'd be no good to you in a fight, so I'll go in and see if he's in possession of anything that might cause us a problem." Theodore seems to have made up his mind on this point.
Vorelle Thursday September 18th, 2003 1:28:08 PM
Vorelle moves to stand next to Vauhwyt, clearly conveying her wish to stay with the Outside Group.
Devlin Thursday September 18th, 2003 5:00:49 PM
"I'm game to whatever and wherever you need me, just say the word. Sounds like you've got a good plan together, though I don't know some of these folk you talk about, but I get the general idea. I can be the one outside if you wish as he won't be alarmed immediately once he gets outside if he seems me. If he knows all of ye like you seem to think, wouldn't do much good for one of you to stand as the messenger."
Devlin stands up straight and there appears to be a bit of excitement about his voice as he talks. His hand reflexively straying to his swordhilt from time to time you can tell that he's itching for some action.
Cade d20+4=14 d20+3=18 Thursday September 18th, 2003 10:01:26 PM
Cade whispers, "Personally, i think our new friend here is probably the wisest choice. I will let you folks decide my course. I am well trained at blending into shadows and crowds, so if you like I can go inside and try and remain hidden from him, within the crowd. I also have some very basic training in disguising myself, with the aid of that disguise kit I heard mentioned earlier, I may have a chance as passing as someone else."
With that Cade removes the dagger from his belt, sheath and all, and attempts to conceal it within one of his sleeves. (Sleight of Hand 14). He then continues to look around (Spot 18).

As soon as everyone is done talking she sneaks in, waiting for somebody to enter or leave so she wont be noticed entering. She finds a table in a dark corner and tries to remain unseen, if a waitress wants her to order she will order tea (or if that would be out of place anything else).

DM Jan Friday September 19th, 2003 1:25:32 AM
And so - the plan takes definite shape, and the group decides who goes in, and who stays outside.
What has been noted so far:
The blacksmith's yard - about 30ft x 40ft - it stretches back into darkness. Someone with lowlight vision will see vague shapes, possible empty stalls for horses, a workshop, lengths of metal piled up against the wall, and the huge bulk of what looks like a kiln.
The street outside - lamplit, and a little brighter around the Blue Eel's entrance, as the tavern has its own outside lamps burning brightly, too. Traffic on the street isnt too heavy, and most folk have their heads down, bent on their purpose, and are usually accompanied.
The interior of the Blue Eel - muted lighting, faded grandeur, quite busy. Lots of tables and chairs filled with patrons. Pretty girls with ribboned hair weave through the crowd with trays, serving drinks, taking orders. There are a couple of card games on the go. The bar extends the entire length of the back wall. From the door, one can see just about everything in the bar area.
((OOC - folks, I need you to post your exact actions, either upon entering the Inn, or staying outside - give me as much detail as you can in respect of where your character is - and make any check rolls you deem necessary.))
Theodore d20+7=21 Friday September 19th, 2003 12:40:07 PM
Theodore takes a deep breath to calm his nerve and pushes his way into the Blue Eel. He keeps his head down and quickly moves to an empty seat, trying his darndest to not draw attention to himself.
Once at his seat, he discreetly scans the room for signs of a scarred half-orc. Upon finding such quarry, he mutters the arcane words for his detect magic spell and directs it towards his target.
Whatever he finds, Theodore quickly retreats out of the tavern to report his information to the outside group.
(If Theo doesn't see a half-orc, he'll simply scan the whole tavern. No sense wasting a spell. If he does see the half-orc, he'll focus the spell on him for the entire three rounds if he indeed has any magic about him, trying to discern the strength and amount. Spellcraft check of 21. After the three rounds are up, Theo will scan the rest of the room for the remainder of the spell's duration before retreating outside.)
Zayne d20+5=23 d20+4=23 d20+4=12 Friday September 19th, 2003 3:24:01 PM
Moving to the darker shadows and putting himself into position nearer to the door of the Eel wher he can watch who goes in and out of the doors unobserved. (hide 23,spot 23 listen 12)
Hoping he can do what he must when the time comes. Thinking to himself "I can do it. I must do it." Checking his weapons making sure that all is in place.
Devlin Friday September 19th, 2003 4:48:47 PM
Seeing the others getting ready, Devlin moves to the center of the smithy and rummages around for a torch to light. Having lit that, he places it on a sconce or somewhere else behind him so that the shadows will further hide his face. He stands in the center of the smithy with his left hand lazily resting on the hilt of his rapier. He keeps the hood of his cloak down so that his face can be seen. He doesn't want his prey to be too alarmed by his presence. With nothing more to prepare for, he stands there leisurely as he waits for the others to bring the criminal to him.
Vauhwyt d20+1=10 Friday September 19th, 2003 5:25:05 PM
Before the band splits, the liontaur goes over the plan one more time.
Theodore enters as covertly as he can and does a quick scan.
Then Cade and Rose will go inside and take up positions by the door. They are just watching.
Then Olyn prepares the guise of the messenger boy witht he cheeky grin, Tam. maybe some other of us with skill in disguise can help him prepare his disguise (Aid Other).
Then Olyn enters the Blue Inn.
The outside bunch -- Vauhwyt, Vorelle, Zayne, and maybe Theodore if he has returned -- hide in ambush. Vauhwyt suggests taking a few minutes to really hide well (with 2 minutes prep, take 20 on the Hide check). Devlin stands on the far side of the yard openly (in his pose as the "messenger."
Olyn lures Ba'Bac out into the yard. Cade and Rose follow one round later.
As Ba'Bac crosses the yard, the team whomps him! "I intend to try to grab him," Vauhwyt adds, "holding him for you guys to pound on. Try not to kill him, though, not yet, anyway!"
After going over the plan, Vauhwyt sneaks over to the stableyard next to the Blue Eel. She watches as the rest of the group sneaks up. She tries to find the best place to hide, maybe in a stable stall. She watches the disguise preparation and notes where the rest of the Outside Group folk hide themselves. She watches to make sure that Devlin takes up a good spot on the other side of the yard.
Vauhwyt takes 20 on her hide check -- result then is 21.
She stands tensed, waiting for Olyn to return leading Ba'Bac. She also keeps her ears sharp, trying to hear if any conflict breaks out inside (Listen check 10).
She goes over her plan in her head ... When the half orc is in range of a charge, she charges him, trying to grab him (melee touch attack) and then hold on tight (grapple attack). She hopes to surprise him, so that he won;t have a chance to respond (flat-footed = no dex bonus, no attack of opportunity to resist the grapple, possible sneak attack damage from a succesful unarmed grapple).
Olyn d20+3=22 Saturday September 20th, 2003 7:10:47 AM
with everyone in place, and ready, and after prepping himself as best he can with his disguise kit, Olyn prays to Wardd.
Wardd, grant me luck this night.
Tossing a pair of dice on the ground, Olyn asks Wardd to grant him the guise of young Tam. (Disguise Self, Trickery Domain, lvl 1) (Wisdom check, 22, to remember as much of Tam as I can)
After the change is complete, Olyn walks in the Blue Eel. Shading his eyes as he enters from darkness to a lit room til his eyes adjust, he scans for the Half Orc.
Upon seeing him, he walks up shyly, like a child would, to Ba'Bacs table and awaits questioning.
If Ba'Bac isn't readily seen, Olyn will inquire from the Barkeep if he has any knowledge of the whereabouts of a Half Orc, named Ba'Bac. If the barkeep is too nosey for his own good and demands knowing why, i just say that I was sent by my housemaster to give a message to him, and him alone.
Vorelle Sunday September 21st, 2003 1:38:29 AM
Vorelle takes a moment to study the lighting in the area and figure out the best place to hide. She takes her time getting into position, double-checking to make sure she can't be seen. [OOC: take a 20 to Hide, for a total of 27]
When/if, Ba'Bac emerges, Vorelle has two goals--first, to protect Vauhwyt as she makes her move, and second, to keep the half-orc contained. She will hold herself clear of the fray, ready to take of after Ba'Bac if he should somehow get away.
Cade d20+7=16 d20+3=18 Sunday September 21st, 2003 8:35:27 PM
As per Vauhwyt's plan, Cade enters the tavern, coming in while some other patrons are entering and attempts to blend into the crowd so that he remains near the door. (Hide check 16)
After setting himself in position he discreetly scans the crowd within. (Spot 18)
DM Jan Monday September 22nd, 2003 2:41:44 AM
The plan unfolds...
Outside - Zayne keeps to the shadows, not too far from the tavern door. Vauhwyt finds a good place in the stables next to the tavern where she is able to remain inconspicuous while going over the plan in her head. Vorelle blends quickly into the shadows of the smithy, while Devlin searches for a torch.
Time seems to slow, as adrenalin starts to kick in. Everything assumes a graceful, purposeful flow, like a deep winter stream, swollen with snow and rain.
Inside the tavern, Cade (and Rose also?) has found a place near the door, keeping a look out for their quarry. Theo is a little further in, his detect magic spell at the ready, just in case the half orc is spotted. All three are able to see Olyn as he moves toward the bar.
As for the half orc? The patrons are settled at tables, a few languish at the bar - humans mostly, and a gathering of halflings in one corner, smoke curling from their pipes. No half orcs. Not one.
Olyn asks his question at the bar, and receives a frown from the man. "What - you mean the one you were in here with, not half an hour ago?" The man's white cotton towel squeaks as he cleans the rim of a glass. "You lost him already? Well, he hasn't come back. Now hop it. This place isn't for the likes of urchins like you."
It's about that time when Devlin finally comes across a torch in the smithy, lights it - sees shadows diminish - and sharp edges and dimension take their place. It gives a good 15ft circle of light.
In the back half of the smithy's yard, just outside the workshop - is the blacksmith's anvil - and laid across the spine of the anvil, bent over backwards, is the form of what looks like a boy in working clothes, partially covered by a cloak. The boy's face stares ahead near the ground - his eyes empty in the torchlight. His throat is distorted - and a dark, glistening pool of 'something' lies just below the boy's head.
Olyn Monday September 22nd, 2003 8:49:44 AM
looking ashen faced Olyn turns and rushes for the door, then heading straight across to where the light is on in the stables.
coming to a halt just inside, and seeing what Devlin sees, Olyn frowns and shakes his head slowly.
slowly walking up to the boy, he checks, knowing what he will find, for a pulse. when receiving none, he reaches up with his left hand, and closes the young boys eyes. saying calmly: we told you not to come here, we told you this man was dangerous but you would not listen, see what happens when you dont listen to people who know better. and with that said, he places both his hands on the boy, and begind praying to Wardd.
Wardd, grant your young son entrance into your Hall this evening. Shower him with your Divine Grace and Wisdom. Let him sit upon your knee and cry against your chest. Let him have the Love he deserves from his Liege.
once everyone shows up in the stables, Olyn turns saying: not but 30 minutes ago this boy entered that tavern and met with Ba'Bac. and we all knew how ruthless this half orc was, but now we know he is much more than that. we Must summon the guards, we Must summon the clerics, we Must turn out the city on this creature for I fear we can not do this alone.
Vauhwyt (12 hp) Monday September 22nd, 2003 11:24:32 AM
Following Olyn to the body at the anvil, Vauhwyt's face pales and her lips turn into a snarl.
At first, she is respectful and bows her head at Olyn's prayer -- though it is a little disturbing to see the image of the boy praying over his now-dead twin. But then hearing Olyn's words after the prayer, Vauhwyt's eyes sparkle with cold fire and she laughs bitterly.
"Ha ha! Sweet Olyn, you are too naive by farr! Rememberr, my grieving friend, that we are above ground now. There are no guards to summon. The only cleric to pray for this lost soul is yourself! In Dirt City, there is no law above ground other than the law of powerr."
As she speaks, Vauhwyt lifts her right forepaw, claws expended, and rakes at her left foreleg, seemingly unconscious of her self-mutilation or the pain it causes. (1 hp damage) As blood runs down to her paw and into the black gritty dirt, she speaks again, and now there is more pain in her voice.
"I feel a gnawing hole in the pit of my gut, as I look at this dead boy and think of this stinking foul disgusting thing, this Ba'Bac! And I know that only one thing will fill the hole of my need -- his death!"
"So my friends, I enjoin you, let us not rest until we have found this half-orc, sucked dry all his foul fountain of information, and then put him to the blade. Then I will feel gladness in my heart again!"
"Keep up your disguise, friend Olyn -- for it will serve us, perhaps to say, 'We raised the boy, and now we know all about you, Ba'Bac!' Such a strategy may win us an advantage."
"Good Vorelle, your skills are sharp, and the dirt that covers the streets shows the signs, maybe, of passage. Can you track this half-orc, and lead us to him? For the trail is still hot!"
"Can any aid the ranger in this? Extra eyes may help."
"Let us do our best, my comrades, to find this villain as quickly as we are able."
Vauhwyt does her best to encourage swift action, and she follows close on the heels of any tracker who finds a trail. And if none do, she suggests spiralling out, as a group, in the hope of finding a clue.
Vorelle d20+5=16 Monday September 22nd, 2003 12:57:23 PM
Vorelle, too, approaches quickly, and attempts to wave the others away lest they spoil any trail that remains.
She examines the ground carefully for signs of what happened--and which way the killer went [track, Survival check of 16].
Theodore Monday September 22nd, 2003 1:05:11 PM
Seeing Olyn rush from the tavern, Theodore quickly follows a minute later. The young mage makes his way to the scene of carnage where the rest of his friends are.
After having looked upon the body of the little boy, Theodore walks away from the group to be by himself. His back is turned towards them as he shuffles away. No one is able to see his trembling lip.

Utterly disgusted at the sight of a murdered child,"I will hunt you and skin you alive, for what you have done today! You are evil and you will pay dearly!!", spoken in a voice hard enough to crack stone and cold enough to freeze the sun.
With unshed tears in his eyes, he searches the ground for any sign of the orc's departure.(Survival 24 natural 20)
After locating the tracks,"Run, for this day you have signed away your life." His voice devoid of any emotion.
Devlin Monday September 22nd, 2003 4:31:22 PM
Devlin's stomach sinks as he looks upon the form of the child spread across the anvil. A cold anger begins to grow deeply within him as the others come into the smithy. He can't stand that they were so close but yet unable to save the little boy.
Without a word to the others, the young man follows after the trail has been discovered.
DM Jan d20+2=12 Tuesday September 23rd, 2003 1:47:18 AM
Olyn prays for the dead boy Tam, and the horror of it seeps irrevocably into everyone's minds.
Then - there is a woooosssshhhhhhhh - BAM!! - as an arrow misses the cleric in the smithy's yard and embeds itself deeply in a nearby post.
From the angle, it looks to have been fired from the roof of the Plough and Shovel store next door. What follows next are the sound of a couple of fading footsteps, rattling against roof tiles.
A quick look around suggests that the rooftops can be accessed via stacks of barrels (and a successful DC10 climb check).
((Folks - it's combat city - take a look in your mailbox, there should be a map.))

then, follows after Vauhwyt.
Vauhwyt (AC 18, HP12, blessed, fleet of foot) d20+2=18 d20+4=9 Tuesday September 23rd, 2003 9:49:30 AM
Hearing the crucial sound of "fading footsteps, rattling against roof tiles," Vauhwyt suddenly fears that the attacker or attackers will escape!
The liontaur quickly touches a button attached to her shirt and flicks it -- it is in fact a seal, a magic seal, and as it breaks, everyone feels incredibly light and fleet of foot.
[OOC: Activating a Seal of Quickness -- It lasts for one round only, letting the entire party move at a speed of 100 normally and up to x3 of that if running. If anyone in the party moves faster than that, they are slowed to that speed.]
The liontaur sprints for the barrels and leaps up, scrabbling with all four paws and both hands (Climb check 18). She rises fast onto the roof and looks for Olyn's attacker.
IF SHE CAN CHARGE AND ATTACK, she will grab at her opponent and tackle him.
Her first priority is to tackle someone who does not have a melee weapon. (An unarmed person will not be able to take an attack of opportunity against her grapple, most likely, she figures.) Her second priority is to attack Ba'Bac or another half-orc.
Vauhwyt's grab attack is a melee touch attack, discounting the benefits of armor. but she only hits AC 9 on the grab attack, so her tackle fails. Well, at least she ends her turn right next to her target and can try again next round.
IF SHE IS TOO FAR TO CHARGE then the liontaur uses the 300 feet rate of the seal to get as close to her target as possible.
"Come on, everybody! Run!" she shouts.
Devlin (AC 18, HP 12/12, blessed) d20=16 d20+2=4 d20+2=10 Tuesday September 23rd, 2003 10:29:28 AM
The cowardly attack from the roof behind them actually presents a bit of a relief to Devlin. At least for the moment he will have a target for his anger and can finally take action. Following the lead of the liontaur, he takes to the stack of barrels and quickly vaults up them and onto the roof (climb check 16). He marvels at his increased speed, wondering what could possibly be making that happen.
Looking around for any other ambushers first, he then follows after the fleeing sniper (spot 4, Listen 10).
Devlin will be looking to support Vauhwyt in whatever way he can with apprehending the sniper. He will attack to subdue if at all possible.

DM Jan d20+4=6 Wednesday September 24th, 2003 1:53:16 AM
The attacker's arrow ignites a flurry of action from the group. Olyn casts BLESS, and everyone feels a protective Warddian tingle. The liontaur immediately activates one of the mysterious Woldian Seals and bounds up onto the roof, closely followed by Devlin and Zayne, and presumably Olyn (throw that Climb check Tim).
Everyone's speed is formidable, and below on the street - Vorelle, Cade and Rose - who see's her companions running off - hurtle along - keeping pace with the others on the roof.
On the ROOF -
There are two apparent assailants visible. Bowman 1 - obviously the one who fired the arrow, is running like the blazes, heading south across the rooftops. He narrowly misses being caught by Vauhwyt, and makes a short leap onto the Grog Shop roof - but the liontaur is well within melee range now and he has his back turned while fleeing. Bowman 2 is poised, ready - on top of the Grog Shop roof, and ducks, barely missing Zayne's arrow which almost parts his hair.
On the STREET -
Vorelle spots Bowman 2 up on the roof. The ranger's aim is true and he takes her arrow in the shoulder.
Suddenly, out of the alley between the Grog Shop and the house next door - a large figure emerges, a broad, ruined face grimaces menacingly above feet that move like a trained fighter, despite a slight list to one side. Ba'Bac growls at Vorelle, Cade and Rose, his eyes full of appraisal - on who to kill first. His hands are full of sharp steel.
Bowman 2 has time to let off one shot, and it flies toward his nearest and biggest target - Vauhwyt - missing desperately. He looks dismayed at how quickly they have been pursued, and he drops his bow, pulls a dagger and lets off a bitter curse.
Bowman 1 and 2 are within melee range of Vauhwyt, Zayne, Devlin and Olyn, and Bowman 2 is within ranged sight of Vorelle, Cade and Rose.
Ba'bac is within melee range of Vorelle, Cade and Rose.
Back at the Smithy, the horror of the murdered boy - a boy who'd been alive and kicking hours earlier, and now lay with his throat cut, and his life's blood spread over the cobbles - grips the young apprentice mage Theodore's psyche like a vice, leaving him unable to think, other than dwell on what his eyes just witnessed. This was the Upper Level of Dirt City - in all it's lawless, bloody, and utterly terrible glory.
Vorelle d20+5=7 Wednesday September 24th, 2003 3:03:19 AM
"BA'BAC!!" That's what Vorelle wants to shout. What comes out is, "Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-" and although her voice is incredibly loud for her, in absolute terms it's not much of a shout. The people on the roof may or may not hear her.
She gives ground a little to give herself room (five-foot shift), and lets an arrow fly. She's too flustered to aim properly, though, and the missile flies wide (hits AC 7).
Olyn (ac18, hp11, Bless) Wednesday September 24th, 2003 8:24:11 AM
*Jan, had decided to do this before your post*
Deciding not to follow Vauhwyt on to the roof, but to attempt to head the roof danglers off on the street down the way, Olyn darts off down the street waiting for when the assailants decide to climb down. When to his dismay him and a few others come face to face with Ba'Bac.
Screaming at the top of his lungs:
VAUHWYT, HE'S DOWN HERE IN THE ALLEY NEXT TO THE GROG SHOP.
Standing with Vorelle, Cade and Rose, Olyn says: Wardd, grant me this one last spell, make this vile creature unlucky this day. Allow us luck in turning the tide in this conflict so that your name be glorified and your will be done.
Throwing a pair of dice at Ba'Bac, Olyn casts: Doom.

Devlin (AC 18, HP 12/12, Blessed) d20+4=9 Wednesday September 24th, 2003 11:34:59 AM
Devlin seems amazed once again at how quickly he is able to move after their fleeing attackers. He is thankful when the men stop and turn to face them and smiles when the men draws daggers.
"What kind of an idiot brings a dagger to a sword fight!" he says as he draws his rapier and attacks the man before him (OOC: bowman 2, attack: 9, miss).
The call from below that BaBac has made his appearance frees the young man for the use of deadly force. These would be of no use for information if they have their quarry below. Not knowing the skills of the others though, he feels the need to dispatch with this one quickly.
Theodore Wednesday September 24th, 2003 12:52:16 PM
As the fight begins outside, Theodore huddles even tighter into the corner, pulling his knees up to his chin.
Each curse and grunt make the young mage flinch as if he had been prodded by a pointy stick. When he hears that Ba'Bac has entered the fray, Tam's murderer, the same one who took the life from the boy not ten feet from his safe little corner, he begins to shake.
"I don't want to die," he says. "But my friends are out there fighting for Tam. I should help them." He shakes his head. "But what can I do? I'm not strong enough. I don't even know how to use a sword. What can I do, besides slow them down?" Theodore rests his head against the cool stone of the smithy wall.
"I'm so scared."

Vauhwyt sees Devlin attack Bowman Two, and she tries to gain a tactical advantage from the situation. She tries to Tumble around to the other side of Bowman 2, and just manages what she needs to avoid an attack of opportunity (Tumble Check 15). Now flanking Bowman Two, she rears up and slashes down with both her forepaws! She hits AC 18 and AC 10, doing sneak attack damage from behind, for six points of damage with the right paw and six points of damage with the left (although the strike against AC 10 is almost surely a miss).
Hearing Olyn, Vauhwyt shouts back, "TWO BOWMEN ARE UP HERRE. WE'LL KILL THEM IN A SECOND AND BE RIGHT DOWN."
ADM BigTim Wednesday September 24th, 2003 10:08:34 PM
sorry for the interruption. want to clarify something.
when rolling a critical success, you roll again, if that second attack would be a hit, then you have succeeded in a critical attack. if you fail in your second roll to hit, then your hit was a normal one.
when rolling damage for a critical success, you roll a damage die for each crit multiplier. ie, a shortbow does d6 damage X3 critical. if you roll a critical success, you would roll 3d6 not a d6 times 3.
page 114 and 140 in your player handbooks talks about this.

As Theodore desperately tries to wriggle out of terror's paralyzing grip and think of some way - any way to help, the fight a little further down the street continues.
Up on the roof, Bowman 2 is horrified to find himself between two assailants. A brief grin of relief drifts across his face as he dodges Devlin's rapier attack, quickly followed by an "Argh!" as Vauhwyt connects with one of her mighty paws. He's not looking too good right now.
Bowman 1 is steadying himself to fire when Zayne's arrow hits him amidships, and he grunts in pain and steps back from the solid, well-aimed hit. (Dave, I wasn't sure who your arrow was for, so I took it for Bowman 1 (Ba'Bac is currently out of sight for those on the roof) - roll your possible crits like Tim said? then I'll adjust the damage :) )
Down on the street, Olyn calls on Wardd to make Ba'Bac tremble in fear and put him at a disadvantage. The half orc shivers for a second, and then gives a low, terrible growl. "Nice try," he rasps bitterly, overcoming the spell's effects. Vorelle takes a step back and fires, the shock of the half orc appearing so suddenly perhaps putting her off her normal true aim. Both Cade and Rose valiantly attack with their swords, narrowly missing as Ba'Bac's exceptionally light step saves him.
Bowman 1 fires back toward Zayne, his eyes glittering murderously behind the bowstring, hitting the ranger hard for 7 points. Bowman 2 giddily thrusts his dagger at Devlin, missing completely in his seriously wounded stupor.
Ba'Bac howls with rage and attacks his nearest target. As Vorelle as edged back a little, Olyn arrived shortly after Cade, and Cade has tried to shield Rose from attack - Cade gets it - a sharp jab for 4 points from the creature's longsword.

Still flanking Bowman Two, the liontaur attacks with two claws, and throws a punch as an afterthought.
[OOC: Jan, did you say that Bowman One and Two are both within melee range? If one of Vauhwyt's attacks drops Bowman Two, she will take a five foot step and attack Bowman One if she can.]
One of Vauhwyt's paws misses (natural one), one hits AC 19 for 7 hp damage, and the punch hits AC 12 for 8 hp damage. (The punch only hits AC10 for 4 damage if Vauhwyt is not flanking.)
"HAH!" she shouts.
Vorelle d20+5=24 d6+1=6 Thursday September 25th, 2003 2:36:28 AM

DM Jan d20+3=10 d8=7 Friday September 26th, 2003 2:25:33 AM
Up on the roof -
A final blow to Bowman #2 from Vauhwyt, and the the man slumps lifeless on the roof tiles. Poor old Bowman #1 - even though he manages to dodge the liontaur's punch, gets stabbed by arrow and rapier, courtesy of Devlin and Zayne. He drops into the alley below - dead.
The alley contains barrels, which will help the climb down.
On the street -
Ba'Bac feels the group's wrath, as Vorelle scores a nasty hit with her axe, and Olyn steps forward to weild a formidable blow of his own. Half orc blood begins to flow.
With an angry howl - Ba'Bac launches into Vorelle with his longsword - missing wildly. (Dang)
Meanwhile, back at the smithy, Theo can hear bodies slumping, and howls of pain and rage. How were his friends faring? What was going on? He might remember earlier - back at the Docks - he hadn't been afraid then, oh no - and he'd thrown quite a punch at their assailants, and one might well wonder... how effective that stack of horse shoes next to the anvil would fare - if they were thrown....

"Zayne," Vauhwyt quickly says, "The combat below is too thick for arrows! Please stay here, bind bowman wounds, tie them up!"
Then the liontaur climbs down to the alley. Her climbing is as poor going down as it was good going up! [climb check 5!] She falls! But she rolls and lands on her feet unharmed! [tumble check 22 to treat a fall as ten feet less than it was]
Down in the alley, Vauhwyt shouts, "Take him alive! Subdue him!"
[With all this so far, I'm not sure Vauhwyt can make an attack. But if she can, here is what she does.]
The liontaur maneuvers around the half-orc into flanking position, pretending to try to tumble and fail. In other words, she deliberately opens herself up to an attack of opportunity, hoping desperately that the half-orc will take her gambit and try to make an attack of opportunity!
Then (hopefully after surviving an attack of opportunity) Vauhwyt moves in to grapple! Usually a grapple would provoke an attack of opportunity, but the liontaur hopes that the half-orc already took his best shot as she maneuvered and so he will not get a second attack of opportunity to thwart her grapple! (You can only take one attack of opportunity per round unless you have the combat reflexes feat).
To grapple, Vauhwyt makes her melee touch attack. She tries to grab the half-orc, and grabs up to AC 19!
Then she tries to get a hold. Her opposed grapple check is (str+BAB+special size mod+bless) is 9 (bleck). If Ba'Bac's opposed grapple check wins, the grapple fails. If his check loses, then Vauhwyt does 4 hp subdual damage and grapples him.
[OOC: While grappling, Ba'Bac loses his dex AC bonus against attacks from others. That's only if he fails to beat Vauhwyt's opposed grapple check of 9.]

Things start to happen thick and fast.
Vorelle, Rose and Cade attempt to bring down their rascally prey - missing with their weapons as the half orc, inspired by pure reflex, lurches away, as suddenly - Vauhwyt, Devlin and a bloodied Zayne (looking worse than Cade) drop to the street from the roof above.
Surrounded - Ba'Bac snarls defiantly.
Two buildings away, Theodore is just in time to see the rest of the group surround their quarry, and watch as Olyn's morningstar goes CLONK - on the half orc's head.
"Uhhhh," grunts Ba'Bac, dropping down unconscious, and bleeding badly.
The streetlamps flicker, and the sound of an approaching carriage can be heard.
Vorelle d20+7=26 Monday September 29th, 2003 2:09:40 AM
Vorelle knows how important it is to keep Ba'Bac alive, so she immediately takes out her healer's kit. She tries to stop the bleeding and stabilize the half-orc.

hearing the sound of the carriage approaching, Olyn turns and continues: quickly now, there may be more. until we are ready to depart we need 2 archers back up on the roof, 2 here with me to watch the comings and goings on this street and Vauhwyt, you help tie up the half orc and stand guard as Vorelle stabilizes him.

Hearing the carriage as she watches Vorelle's good work on the orc, Vauhwyt decides that it would be better for the group in the alley to stay out of sight. She moves a barrel and tries to get herself and the half orc under cover (Hide Check 16).
Hearing Theodore's efforts at distraction, she thinks, "Good idea! Maybe that will help!"
