An appeal to Gargul

Gargul [CDM Jerry]
Thursday October 23rd, 2003 11:16:10 PM

These words (received via email) come from the silent lips of Brother Bertram. They seem to still the air and bring time to a stop.

"Gargul, please grant this request for us in our hour of need.

"I ask for you to look down upon and grant a request that is in your power if you so choose to honor it. Grant us the life of our fallen friend, Orson.

"His spirit is strong, and his heart is willing to do what is right to help others. Please do not turn a deaf ear to our plea. I beg of you to let me negotiate for my comrades' life."

Bertram feels power surge through the rod and waits to see if his request will be deemed worthy.

----------

Suddenly Brother Bertram's eyes roll back into his head and he falls to the ground unconscious.

A moment later, you feel yourselves grow slack and also fall, though you do not remember hitting the ground.

You find yourselves in a sort of amphitheatre/throne room. The room vaults up in all directions from the stage upon which sits a huge throne.

In the direction away from the throne is the open area to the lands beyond and what greets your eyes defies your comprehension.

The grass is greener. The trees more beautiful. It's as if all the Wold were but a shadow in comparison to the supreme reality of this place. It hurts the eyes to take it in and soon they are aching.

You are drawn towards the throne and seem to float there as you become more and more real. Upon the throne is a tall man with a black beard.

He has the muscles and stance of a trained fighter. He has a bit of the look of both a wild barbarian as well as a nobleman. He wears a dusty well-traveled black robe. On his face is a strange smile that might just be a grimace. He somehow is both threatening and sad.

"Who comes before me this day to petition for the life of a friend? I would have each of you in turn state your peace."

Lian
Friday October 24th, 2003 3:33:01 AM

The small, humble elven monk steps forward, anger still feeds him. His cold dark eyes, teary at the brilliance of the room.

"I am Lian Siannodel of Culverwood.
You would like my peace?
Well, I know Orsen was brash and fast to jump, literally at times, head-long into situations without thinking them through. Not into this one that killed him. This was a brutal and unnecessary death... in my opinion.

I was, am, confused by the man. But I do know that a few qualities he had were redeaming.

He had a great trauma happen in his life a few years back and I know that grates on a young soul deeply, I don't know details. Pain is a strange thing, it can be physical, psycological or even unexplainable.

I believe he still has a few things to work out in life before he meets you, when it is truly his time."

Olana
Friday October 24th, 2003 11:46:44 AM

As Olana saw it, things were getting really ugly. One of their own lay dead, they had captured one of those despicable lunatics belonging to the HOL, and now she was witnessing a rather disturbing dark side to those she fought alongside and held dear.
This wasn't good. It skewed her own perspective, leaving her confused and looking for a way to stop it - anything.
Just make it stop!
It was right about the point when she was seriously considering putting an arrow through the HOL member's skull, in an attempt to quell all the hatred he was obviously spreading amongst her dear fellows, when she saw Bertram start to fall.
She felt her own bow go taut for an instant, and then slacken as she lost control and let it drop.

The scene shifted before her eyes, to a place she thought she remembered - or was it some kind of dreamworld she inhabited occasionally? It was so beautiful, that it hurt to look upon it, and she had to turn away from the vista and instead, look upon the figure on the throne.
She recognised this man.

Dropping to one knee, she tried to clear her head. Shame on her, that it had held such a murderous thought upon entering this place!

She was lost for words, until Lian began to speak about Orson. The disturbing clouds in her mind began to shift and fade.

"I am Olana d'Kallya of Culverwood," she said when it came for her turn to speak.
"Our friend Orson's life appeared to have it's fair share of tragedy, and right now he lies cut down - another ill arrow in a quiver full of them. I would wish upon him peace, happiness and wisdom. I know it's hard to know if he could acquire these things after death, just as it is uncertain that he would find them at last after a long life in the Wold, but that is the only place I know of where they can be found.
"We seek your guidance, mighty Gargul. We miss him, we would like him back."

Milo
Friday October 24th, 2003 5:29:21 PM

The sudden shift in setting leaves Milo reeling for a grasp on reality momentarily. He comes fully to his senses as Olana is halfway through her spiel, and looks up, realizing that they have drastically and suddenly changed location. Looking up, he realizes that Gargul is present, and after Olana has finished speaking, Milo moves forward, casually slapping his short sword back into its sheath. With the heart of seriousness, the halfling rogue gazes up at the face of the god, fully intending to be sanctimonius, given his past dealings in the clergy, then, his face shifts, and Milo's quirky grin emerges. "Greetings, oh guardian of the ghastly gate. I'm not going to be so presumptuous as to judge whether or not Orson's current demise was his final death or... ahem... supposed to be his final death... or whatever... However, I am going to say, that if we cannot bring him back with us... we'll miss him an awful lot... and I personally believe that there was... um... is... or whatever... a whole lot more potential for that crazy warrior to fulfill... it sure would be very interesting to see what he would do next... well... at the very least.. incredibly amusing... and I don't think this last bout of amusement is deserving of a final rest... if you know what I mean." Milo backs up, biting his bottom lip, and pats Olana's hand reassuringly.

Gargul [CDM Jerry]
Friday October 24th, 2003 11:59:17 PM

"Indeed." Gargul's eyes are for Olana.

"Not his time. You'll miss him.

"But do you need him? And are you willing to pay the price I set for his return to you??

"How fares the girl? Have you visited your charge lately? Do you keep the bond you set with me last time we met?

Brother Bertram
Saturday October 25th, 2003 12:30:07 AM

Bertram steps up. "I will answer for the girl. I have indeed kept my bond for our agreement, Lord Gargul. Her needs our cared for as you commanded. I have donated gold for her education and intend to go to visit her when this quest has ended. I do not claim much in this life Lord Gargul, but in this, I have done what you have commanded."

Ingrge
Saturday October 25th, 2003 2:15:10 PM

Watching in grim fascination and distaste as the HOL member is treated fairly harshly, Ingrge has a mental battle within himself as he debates their promise and the deaths of the elven lad and the villagers. Not wanting to see a larger stain stread through K'nara's soul, He steps forward to intervene and suddenly feels himself go limp and fall.

Coming to he looks around to see what can be seen as he is still on the floor and then makes his way to his feet. As he realizes where they are Ingrge drops to one knee and bows his head.

After Gargul asks his question, Ingrge waits until there is a lull and then steps forward.

"Lord Gargul, My name is Ingrge Nightseer. While I would not be so presumptious to say it is good to see you again, I would inquire as to how our brief companion, Gimp, is.

As for our fallen companion Orson. He fell in battle against those who take pleasure in torturing and killing innocents and children. It is them that we still battle in one form or another. Without Orson, our strength is greatly dimminished and our chances of success much slimmer. I for one believe there is something else he was meant to do before walking the realm of shadow for eternity. That however is not for me to decide. Know that he was a part of us as my arn is a part of me. Without him we will go on, but we will not be as effective a tool for justice and life that we were.

DM kent
Saturday October 25th, 2003 2:20:30 PM

Milo removes a few things from the HOL's pockets and takes off his pack to search through them as K'nara steps forward sword drawn. As she makes her first few cuts, the cleric's robe starts to slide down to the ground. As soon as it touches the ground a new one takes its place as if from out of nowhere, even the Hand looks a bit suprised. As K'nara goes to make another cut at the new Vestments she sees/hears several other talons call out and fall just befor she too feels everything go dark.

K'Nara
Saturday October 25th, 2003 2:58:57 PM

Her anger consumed her...then she realized where she was.

And who was asking after the price of allowing Orson to return to the land of the living.

"Gargul." K'Nara bows in the graceful elven fashion. "I am K'Nara Illutu. I lead the Emerald Talons. I will pay the price you ask to return Orson to The Wold. I was the one responsible for his death, as I was the commander of our party during this battle. He is needed because our party is dedicated to fighting for the good of not only the Culverwood, nor the Emerald Kingdom my group originally hailed from...but the entire Wold itself." The human bladesinger paused, looking a bit embarrassed.

"Besides...I have the feeling that Orson would probably have been amongst the first to point out that I was letting my outrage for the murder of a young elven-blooded boy get the better of me."

Lian
Monday October 27th, 2003 3:26:46 PM

The monk looks on.

Figment
Monday October 27th, 2003 4:47:53 PM

The mage takes a deep breath and says "Lord Gargul, it is I who cast the spell that took the life of Orson. He suprised me in battle with his moves. I should have been more careful. I will pay a price for his return if one is to be paid. May I ask the nature of the price? What is to be expected of us for such a gift?".

Gimp [DM Jerry]
Monday October 27th, 2003 6:45:05 PM

An imp appears out of nowhere.

"Someone wanted me?

"Ingrge! K'nara! Olana! Figment! Milo! And new people! What is my adventuring group doing here? Did you all! Oh no! Surely not!"

...

Gargul [DM Jerry]
Monday October 27th, 2003 6:48:39 PM

"No Good Gimp. They are fine. One of their newer companions has died in combat and they come to ask for his return.

"And they do so nobly and with honor. They admit their mistakes and show their loyalty to their new friend by taking this risk.

"However, before a price is determined, there is a final person who must speak his mind.

"Orson! Come before this throne and stand before me. You have had much time since your arrival to purge your soul of it's troubles. Speak your heart. Do you wish to return? And I see another boon you would ask of me? Speak it!"

K'Nara
Monday October 27th, 2003 7:11:49 PM

The human bladesinger fell silent but grinned at Gimp--he had been a thorn in her side, but a valued being of The Wold for his role in helping to save it. Then she looked around to see what form Orson would take on this side of the existential divide.

Brother Bertram
Monday October 27th, 2003 9:50:49 PM

Bertram watches the exchange with interest. It is an interesting look at his companions as well as anothe aspect of Gargul.

Milo
Monday October 27th, 2003 11:21:45 PM

Milo forgets where he is and smiles when he sees Gimp, sticking his tongue out at the creature before remembering he is in the presence of Gargul. At that point, the diminutive rogues retracts his tongue, and steps behind Olana, hoping not to be seen.

Olana
Tuesday October 28th, 2003 12:53:03 AM

Olana opens her mouth to answer, but then stops as Bertram addresses the question of the girl.
They had put the child on the right track for sure. As for what price she would be willing to pay, she found herself wondering, curious...

She sought Milo's hand and held it tightly. What was she willing to lose? What wouldn't she want to give up?

The sight of Gimp brought a grin to her face. In her rememberence of the final battle, she had carried the creature as they hurtled toward Marteaus with Domi at the helm. Amidst the chaos, keeping the little creature alive had been important, and the sight of him brought back poignant memories.
Aware of Milo, suddenly moving behind her, she waits to see what Orson has to say.

K'Nara
Tuesday October 28th, 2003 5:39:49 PM

The tall warrior-woman awaited Orson's words.

Lian
Tuesday October 28th, 2003 6:05:05 PM

The monk looks on. He waits for Orsen.

Gargul [DM Jerry]
Tuesday October 28th, 2003 10:12:37 PM

Crossing his arms, the god shows infinite patience as Orson struggles to find the words he would say.

"ORSON! SPEAK!"

Just a hit of the power of a god is manifested with this statement and outside, the sound of rumbled thunder can be heard.

Orson
Tuesday October 28th, 2003 10:25:18 PM

A dark and transparent form wavers into existence before the throne of the deity of death, obviously recognizable as the Talon warrior Orson. The spirit looks wearily at Gargul as he speaks, seemingly unaware of his living companions positioned around him. "Great one, I only seek one day to earn the forgiveness of my dear Katrina," he says, though his expression saddens, his head dropping. "Though how can my lack of...being there for her when she needed me most ever be forgiven..." Its obvious that he has not had any chance to purge his soul of those emotions that plague him.

He glances back up towards the god, and continues. "As for my heart to speak, how can it wish for anything but to spend the rest of my existence, in life or after, with that who I love. It is a selfish desire, to those whom would call upon me, but I cannot change that which I feel." The soft expression he had begun to develop sours again, his head hanging again. "But I am deserving of no pleasantry, one such as me not even deserving to hold onto the hope of such a wish."

Looking at Gargul, with a serious look overriding all the other emotions the spirit was feeling, "My heart and soul are hers before all else, and for all time, so I want her will to decide my fate. Whatever place or task she deems me worthy of, or whatever more is required of me. Have I done enough...can I ever do enough..." He trails off, awaiting whatever would be decided, expecting the worst of fates within the Tormented Lands being the only thing suited for him. He stills shows no sign of noticing the other Talons that litter the room.

(OOC: sorry about the delay, was waiting for responses form 2 different people, can slow things down :P)

Tuesday October 28th, 2003 10:47:11 PM

The mage awaits the judgement of the god, feeling that his performance has good enough - or at least hoping...

Olana
Wednesday October 29th, 2003 12:41:41 AM

Olana gives a sigh. Such a heavy weight to carry. Would his re-birth only make it worse? That's if Gargul granted it, of course.
Oh my, what a quandry.

Milo
Wednesday October 29th, 2003 2:02:54 AM

Holding Olana's hand, Milo stands quietly by, awaiting the judgment of Gargul.

Lian
Wednesday October 29th, 2003 2:08:59 AM

The monk mumbles under his breath.

Brother Bertram
Wednesday October 29th, 2003 4:33:21 AM

Bertram eyes wince with Orson's pain, and to some extent, anger at what the warrior was being put through.

K'Nara
Wednesday October 29th, 2003 6:09:39 PM

Regret for an action taken...K'Nara knew the sting of that particular wound only too well! A chance to make up for it--such a hope lay alive within her own soul, too. She could only pray that Gargul's judgement be sound and wise...

Gargul [DM Jerry]
Wednesday October 29th, 2003 8:02:09 PM

"Orson, sometimes the tasks of a god are not pleasant. I cannot grant your request for a reunion with Katrina."

He pauses.

Gimp gasps in horror.

"I cannot unite you with her because she is not here."

He lets this sink in.

"She is one of the undead lost and suffers the fate of not reaching the Lands of Rest."

Gargul actually seems to sink into his chair a bit and for a moment his face looks tortured as if bearing burdens beyond what he can bear.

In a whisper or is it a whimper he then commands the party.

"Comfort him. His agony is beyond bearing."

Figment
Wednesday October 29th, 2003 10:30:06 PM

The mage continues to be silent, waiting for the shaken warrior to regain his composure - or not...

Olana
Thursday October 30th, 2003 12:45:21 AM

Olana looks at Milo, horrified.
"Undead?" she whispers, "and lost? Like a zombie? How horrible... but how could that have happened?"

Milo
Thursday October 30th, 2003 1:14:53 AM

Milo remains steady, holding firmly to Olana's hand, he speaks in a whisper, "Orson willing, we can fix that."

Orson
Thursday October 30th, 2003 1:59:14 AM

Orson shoulders slump as the deity finishes his first sentence, having been fully expecting as such, but the reality of it shocking him harder than the spell that had taken his life. During Gargul's brief pause, the now solidified, seemingly real mainfestation of Orson slumps to a single knee, more a mental reflex than a physical one, but unable to stand.

He glances up, confused, as the god continues, hi expression in turn changing to horror as the realization of what Gargul was saying became apparent. "But how..." he stammers, resting his weight on a fist against the floor, his emotions turning towards anger at himself for allowing such a thing to happen, to not have known before.

The warrior remains kneeling, resting on a kneel and knuckles, shaking slightly. After a few moments, he speaks with a voice wavered with emotion, though doesn't look up, "I wasn't there to protect her life, please let me be there to save her spirit. I'll do anything, but let me do something for her."

Lian
Thursday October 30th, 2003 2:28:20 AM

His mouth gapes at the horrorable situation.

"Undead."

Brother Bertram
Thursday October 30th, 2003 4:44:32 AM

Bertram flinches hearing Gargul's words. Still he felt his anger growing. Suddenly a shout was ripped from his lungs, "HELP HIM!" Realizing what he had done he bowed his head in frustration and shame, "Please My Lord, surely they both deserve better than this? Is there nothing you can do? I am pledged to you already, but if there is anything I can do to sway you in this I am willing!"

Ingrge
Thursday October 30th, 2003 6:49:07 AM

A look of dispair and loathing escaps Ingrge's eyes as the thought of yet another undead soul wandering the Wold.

K'Nara
Thursday October 30th, 2003 6:12:11 PM

The female fighter couldn't help herself...she reached out and gripped Orson's shoulder.

"Orson..." she said solemnly to the grieving man, "...once we are quits of Fae Skeimir, I will see to it that we track down what happened to your Katrina and find out how we can help her."

Gargul [DM Jerry]
Thursday October 30th, 2003 8:49:22 PM

Gargul stands and seems to smolder. "Stand before me and I will show you my solution. It is yours to accept or refuse. Should you accept it, I give you life.

Gargul then places holds his hands out towards Orson and seems to be showing him a vision.

"If you refuse, you remain here to await the eventual arrival of the love of your past life.

"Also if you accept, their is then a price I will demand of your friends. One I will reveal after I have your decision.

"So search your heart Orson and select your destiny."

Milo
Thursday October 30th, 2003 11:45:47 PM

Curious, Milo begins to edge forward toward Gargul, so that he might see the solution... but then realizes he is holding Olana's hand, and decides he'd rather just stay and do that.

Olana
Friday October 31st, 2003 9:42:29 AM

Olana finds that she is biting her lip and holding Milo's hand rather firmly.

She's a little afraid, she realises...

Orson
Friday October 31st, 2003 10:09:50 AM

Orson glances up at K'Nara as he feels her hand rest on his shoulder, drawing a bit of comfort from her presence. As Gargul speaks again, he stands and steps forward before the diety, as requested.

Despite the obvious answer the emotional warrior was likely to give, Orson calmly watches the entire vision Gargul gives him, spending a few moments afterwords thoughtfully considering what it would mean to both refuse and accept the god's offer.

After a few painfully long and erriely silent moments, the big warrior nods slightly, "I accept."

Lian
Friday October 31st, 2003 6:55:14 PM

The elf just stands there, waiting.

When he hears Orsen's answer, he slumps a bit.

He sits on the floor and just watches.

Gargul [DM Jerry]
Friday October 31st, 2003 10:21:33 PM

In his full godly voice, Gargul then pronounces,

"THEN WARRIOR THOU ARE NOT FROM THIS DAY FORTH!

"AND GRIM THY SHALT BE!"

And with that, Orson is covered in black like Gargul from head to toe. A holy symbol hangs from his neck. He looked powerful as a fighter before. Now he looks....lethal.

"Now all that remains is the task. I hereby charge you that in return for the life of Orson, you commit yourselves to freeing his wife from the undead state that keeps her from seeking her rest. Do not neglect your other responsibilities, but add this task as well. And accomplish it!

"Do you accept?"

Lian
Saturday November 1st, 2003 1:25:02 AM

The monk raises an eyebrow looking at Orsen.

Thinking to himself, Orsen, a warrior for Gargul... go figure, makes sense to me. He shrugs. But what do we have to do for him?

Lian remains silent and still in the room.

Lian
Saturday November 1st, 2003 1:27:37 AM

Find his WIFE?! His mind wraps around the goal.

Milo
Saturday November 1st, 2003 3:58:21 AM

Milo considers the idea of hunting down Orson's undead wife briefly, and steps forward, "I accept."

Brother Bertram
Saturday November 1st, 2003 8:02:03 AM

Bertram muses of how this change will affect the Talons in the days and months to come.

K'Nara
Saturday November 1st, 2003 2:48:19 PM

"I agree to your terms as well, Gargul." the tall female fighter nodded her cauled head. "I would ask another favor of you--I got very angry at the thought of a poor elven-blooded boy who was murdered back in Emerald City...is he all right? I...am hoping that, at least, even though his life was taken at so young an age, he is now at peace."

Olana
Monday November 3rd, 2003 1:30:30 PM

"I have no hesitation in accepting the task of freeing Orsen's wife. No one should be left to roam like that," states the elf with conviction.

Lian
Monday November 3rd, 2003 3:35:37 PM

The monk remains sitting, just watching the proceedings.

Orson
Monday November 3rd, 2003 6:21:02 PM

Orson takes a few steps away from his new patron, the mithril links of his newly created jet black chainmail clinking lightly. He turns to face his companions, listening to thier comments. He bows his head in shame as Olana speaks, obviously blaming himself for how she said no one should be left.

A few other changes in his equipment are noticable as well, a heavy mithril sheild, bearing the Eye of Gargul is gripped in his left hand, and a single, larger blade of a bastard sword replaces the two longswords he previously carried sheathed on his back.

Figment
Monday November 3rd, 2003 7:25:34 PM

Monday November 3rd, 2003 8:06:40 PM

The red-headed leader of the Talons awaited Gargul's response to her question about the murder victim from Emerald City...she really did hope the boy was at peace now.

Brother Bertram
Monday November 3rd, 2003 8:15:08 PM

Bertram merely bows his head in assent. His thoughts on Orson are mixed, his mind thinking back to the agreement that he made with Gargul. He looks down to the Eye on his own hand unconsciously.

Gargul [DM Jerry]
Monday November 3rd, 2003 9:23:05 PM

"The boy is at peace. He has already accepted a new incarnation.

"So we have a consensus. You have the Grim. I get the soul. Wisdom and intelligence be with you."

He stands. A rare honor bestowed upon only a few.

With slight disorientation, you return to your previous location.

[Kent, the game is yours. Thanks for the priviledge of letting me post for the great group of players for a short time.]

DM Kent
Monday November 3rd, 2003 10:50:30 PM

As you come to your senses, you find that you are back in the glade, as you look around you notice several things:

The Hand of Caeroldra is no where in sight the other bodies are still lying around, but you hear much closer sounds of other things and people soon to arrive.

Secondly, you all notice that you have also arrived back in the glade completely healed of any remaining wounds.

The final thing you notice is that Orson looks much different than he did before.

Milo
Monday November 3rd, 2003 11:05:00 PM

Milo stands, blinking, but very much enjoying just holding Olana's hand, and standing silently. The halfling sees that Orson is once again alive, and smiles, but remains silent, basking in the moment, just thrilled to be alive.

Olana
Tuesday November 4th, 2003 1:17:15 AM

The elf emits a sigh of relief and then quickly looks around.
"We'd better get moving," she says to Milo, squeezing his hand for a moment.

"K'Nara, do we have that thingy from the HOL member - the one that tells us where the artifact is?"

She wants to ask Orson what being a Grim is all about, but by the sound of whats coming in the distance, doesn't think this is quite the right time.

Orson  d20+1=17
Tuesday November 4th, 2003 2:09:55 AM

Besides the change in equipment, Orson also seemed to change slightly physically. His entire frame seemed a touch smaller than he had been, his muscles a little leaner. His deep greenish eyes he once had have also changed, faded to a dull grey, forever changed by the gifts of sight granted to one of his new profession. The only other relevant change is the lack of shadow that the warrior casts.

Orson concentrates to activate the magic of his glove, storing the mithril disk within the magics of the black cloth.

Looking to K'Nara, his dark eyes look lost for a moment, not finding the right words. "Thanks for bringing me back, and for agreeing to help my wi- Katrina," he says, then glancing around to the other Talons, "thanks everyone."

He nods in agreement in Olana's assessment that they needed to move, and quickly performs a quick search of the bodies, whispering a few parting comments to guide the souls of the deceased.

Gathering whatever valuables the dead might have into a sack, he tosses it on the ground for whomever might care to look through it. "May it serve better use than it did in there hands; or go to pay forgiveness for any wrongs they may have commited," he adds, remembering K'Nara's anguish she expressed about the dead elven-blooded boy.

(OOC: Search check 17. Not thorough searches, unless time is allowed, just wahtever he can get done in the time before the Talons decide to move.)

You collect and pack what you are taking, please let me know if you leave anything behind.

Taking the compass out Figment easily figures out how to activate it and soon the compass points the way into the forest toward Fae Skiemir proper.

As you walk, you get a better look at the huge trees, tangled vines, thickets of undergrowth found in and around the city. The trees in Fae Skienner are mainly oak, maple, blue leaf, dusk wood, shadow top, silver bark and weir wood. Ocassionally you see a truly massive Rowan tree. Every so often you see moss covered rocky outcrops. Within 30 minutes the talons start seeing parts of the old city proper. There are towering obelisks and partially hanging bridges high in the trees and between the covered buildings. It's an awe inspiring and beautiful sight in an eerie way. The age and immensity of the construction are ever present. Strange sounds are coming from within the woods as you walk along and they get more pronounced and louder as you get among the city's buildings.

Up ahead, about 60 ft, you all see a slight shimmering in the air, or did you see it? Perhaps it was merely a small wave of heat or the sunlight glancing off of a shiny leaf or piece of rock or metal.

There is no lessening of the surrounding noise, but has the tone changed? Or perhaps is it a bit more tentative? Hard to say, but the compass points you onward and inward.

K'Nara, not turning up much of anything that the others hadn't already discovered, cast a Detect Magic spell just to save Figment the energy. She made sure that anything that radiated magic was picked up and taken.

When the group approached the interior of Fae Skiemir, the redheaded warrior woman blinked at the mirage--or was it?--and frowned.

"We need to get this done, but is this some kind of clue to a magic trap or some such..?" she asked of Figment and Ingrge. (OOC: K'Nara's attempt to use her own intelligence yields a result of 10--I sincerely hope other people get better checks!)

Orson travels quietly along with the others, not saying much as he contemplates the terms of his agreement with Gargul, as well as the odd change he felt within himself.

He blinking as he sees the faint shimmer, looking to see if others saw it as well, wondering if was his eyes playing tricks on him, still unaccustom to the variety of visions his transformation blessed him with, as well as seeing both into Wold and the Shadow Realm taking a bit of getting used to.

It is now nearing late afternoon and in the shadows of the trees and ruins some of the mossy outcrops appear to be glowing.

The compass is definitely pointing you straight into the shimmery area. There are, or appear to be paths around the area, but they don't look too well used, and you can't tell if they swing back around toward your goal.

There is a tall building off to your right behind some vines and another shorter one just to the left of the front edge of the shimmery area.

As you ponder your decision the ever present background noise disapears.

Olanna is the first to notice the sudden near absolute silence that falls around them.

Turning his head toward Olanna to answer her question he poners it a moment before answering.

"Olanna, that is a good question. I have never experienced one so I truly do not know. Ancient lore has them taking several forms and having varied effects. Most lore has said they are mobile areas, or walls, of magic. The effects as I mention are not consistent. The Skiems or Skiemirs were created to aid and defend the people of Fae Skiemir. What that means ... is I guess open to interpretation.

As Ingrge finishes speaking there is a piercing shriek. Turning toward the sound you see 6 of the large preying mantis type humanoids you encountered earlier. These however are nearly perfectly camoflauged among the trees. you don't see any weapons.

As the party moves into the smaller building you feel like you are momentarily moving through thick air. That passes after 2-3 steps. At the same time you notice the shimmering air as well as you pass through that thick area. you immediately feel as if you are carrying more weight, ALL armor weighs more, ALL weapons weigh more, ALL packs weigh more, etc. Anyone who normally has somesort of continuous magic going notices that the effects are gone.

Inside you find a large empty room with a destroyed and unuseable staircase at the rear. The right wall as you enter (facing the way you were heading) is mostly gone.

Littering the floor are a vast assortment of bones from all kinds of different and unusal beasts, some humanoid, some not.
