Into the Wilds of Izen

DM Jan
Monday November 10th, 2003 12:18:49 AM

The group set off.

Vorelle and Vauhwyt in particular seem to flourish as they are freed of the boundaries of city life and all its constraints, if not some of the others.
The two pack mules trot easily along well made tracks that cut through the surrounding farm land. Every so often, a cart laden with produce appears in the mists, passing in the opposite direction, heading toward the city. In the fields, vague shapes of farm workers can be seen working the dark, fertile soil.
The air carries a bite, a wet chill that clings to uncovered skin.

With Rose up on one of the mules, Olyn, Dietrich, Zayne, Devlin, Theodore, Vauhwyt and Vorelle are able to make good time, and in a few hours the farmlands and the Towers are lost in the distance.

The ground begins to rise all around, with the track weaving in between small hillocks and outcroppings of rock. For now the fog is still evident, but collecting into drifts, so that part of the land up ahead is clear, only to disappear once again a little further on. The sun is rising steadily, but having a hard time burning through.

Every now and then Vorelle will see tracks breaking off, heading in other directions. The groups own path becomes less apparent, and narrows up a little - obviously less traveled. Grass under Vauhwyt's paws becomes tough, and gives way to patches of shale.
Wilderness lovers might love it, but some more used to urban surroundings may find it wide open, cold, unforgiving and not particularly pretty.

One thing's for sure - this is Izen, in all it's untamed glory, wrapped in shrouds of mist, concealing it's secrets.

Gradually, a scent becomes apparent - hanging in the air as the group head further toward the dig,
Something sweet, something rotting... it makes the mules baulk and slow their steps.

It's around lunchtime.

Vauhwyt  d20+2=10 d20+7=27
Monday November 10th, 2003 6:45:42 AM

"Thith ith not the dig," Vauhwyt whispers, lisping because the sounds of letter "s"s travel. "Burt the Dwarf thaid it wath two day'th walk, and we've gone only half a day."

"That thaid, we thould check this out carefully. I suggest that the thtealthy folk, like Rothe and Vorelle, go out ahead, and the retht of uth follow about 80 feet back, altho trying our betht to be thtealthy."

She gives her signal whistle to Vorelle and whispers a little more. "Blow thith, and we'll come a-running. Or we'll come a-running if we hear or thee battle."

"How doth that thound? Anyone elthe have any thuggestionth?"

If the group advances, Vauhwyt will stick to the rear, trying to be quiet and hidden. [OOC: Hide check 10, Move check natural 20! = 27]

Dietrich  d20+4=13
Monday November 10th, 2003 6:55:46 AM

When Dietrich receives the healing potion from Olyn he is very grateful and he agrees with Vauhwyt in paying the potion back. During the march he humms some old soldiersongs, feeling secure in his armour and with Vorelle and Vauhwyt scouting. He trys some smalltalk with Olyn and Theodore, as Devlin is not in the mood.
Dietrich helps Rose with her package and takes a look on the new country he is walking in now.
When he senses the rotting smell he holds his mule and trys to calm her down. (OOC: he´s bought his own mule, so I think there should be 3 mules with the group now). Then he takes his broadsword and stays in alert, watching through the sightopening of his closed steelhelmet. (spot 13)

Dietrich  d20-2=14
Monday November 10th, 2003 7:11:38 AM

OOC: I couldn´t see Vauhwyt´s post before, so there is a second post for Dietrich.

Dietrich listens to Vauhwyts suggestions and aproves them.
He also trys to walk stealthy and positions himself in a way to protect Theodore if necessary(stealth 14).

Zayne  d20+4=20
Monday November 10th, 2003 12:01:26 PM

Feeling slightly nostalgic,he he both more alert and at the same time more relaxed the further away from the city they go.

Telling tales of his childhood and pointing out landmarks as they pass,it's as if he is almost a different person.

Alternating between telling stories and making sure they aren't being followed,(spot 20) and making sure Theo doesn't kill himself on accident. He is enjoying himself.

At Vauhwyt's suggestion,"Actually I think I should go with Vorelle. I know this area and Rose doesn't. Not that I don't think she can take care of herself",flashing a quick smile in Rose's direction."I just think I am better suited for this, thats all."

Theodore
Monday November 10th, 2003 2:42:05 PM

Theodore uses his new quarterstaff as a support as he travels with his group of friends. He chats amiably with anyone who listens, expressing opinions on the latest books, suggesting theories concerning arcane practices, and discussing the biologies of the more peculiar animals inhabiting the Wold.

He is completely oblivious that many of his friends are near him not due to his enthralling conversation, but rather to protect him should anything occur.

At first, Theodore is confused at why the party stopped until he notices the anxiousness of the mules. Vauhwyt pipes up to offer a plan of action. Theodore nods in agreement, and stands straighter in an attempt to look confident. Those near by can see him finger his newly acquired ring.

Devlin
Monday November 10th, 2003 3:35:29 PM

As the party moves along out in the open, Devlin's mood brightens up as the fog begins to lift. He is actually quite happy to be out in the open again and finds it refreshing not to have to worry about the political games that seem to always be a worry in the cities. As they stop and he catches the rancid smell of rotting meat, he listens to the plans of the others before adding his own thoughts.

"I agree with Zayne. If he knows this area, he should be one of those to scout ahead and Rose can stay with the rest of us. We can be there quickly if there is need." He takes his longbow from its carrying case and quickly strings it before testing the draw of it. In actuality, he's itching to give the new weapon a test. "We can cover anyone from here."

rose
Monday November 10th, 2003 5:52:11 PM

Rose is only sleeping lightly (why didnt anyone wake her up?) and wakes when her mule balks. she unstraps herself and dismounts climbing a little rope ladder :) She is wide awake and ready for anything. "How about all three of us go scout, I'll go with Zayne or Vorelle. But it's up to them."

Vorelle  d20+7=22 d20+7=21 d20+5=18 d20+5=14
Monday November 10th, 2003 8:35:14 PM

Vorelle covers the ground easily in a comfortable, loping stride, but she willingly stops whenever the others need rest breaks.

She wrinkles her nose at the carrion smell, then nods in agreement to Vauhwyt's suggestion and prepares to scout ahead.

(Peter, you're right - 3 mules)

Vauhwyt, Devlin, Olyn and Dietrich get ready to attack or defend, just in case the scouts spot something nasty, and Theo finds himself well defended.
Dietrich's mule settles a little, but all three animals look a bit spooked.

Up ahead, Vorelle, Zayne and Rose move closer to the stench.
The smell suddenly gets worse as they look carefully over a small rise and are able to see what lies beyond.

Piled up on either side of the track, in a hideous jumble - are bodies. Most of them are picked clean of clothing, weaponry - and flesh. Orcs by the looks of it - and the carnage doesn't stop there, for there appears to be a line of fallen ones, about thirty feet wide - a horror that stretches far into the mists on either side.

Some great catastrophe happened here, leaving behind it a swathe of the dead, the only movement appears to be from stray shreds of dried skin, flapping gently in the breeze.
About 50 yards to the left, there looks to be what was once a huge bell, cracked and broken in two pieces.

The track ahead looks clear and passable, but the party will need to cross this mass graveyard to get where they're going.

Vorelle spots something moving suddenly near the broken bell. One second it's there, and then the next - its gone.

Vorelle  d20+5=13 d20+5=11
Tuesday November 11th, 2003 10:39:47 AM

Using hand signals, Vorelle conveys to Rose and Zayne that she saw something down there and is going to investigate.

Then she moves toward the bell, carefully staying hidden and moving quietly. [Take 10 to Hide and Move Silently if I can, giving me a 17 in each.]

She keeps an eye out for any movement like she saw before, and once near the site, she begins looking around for tracks.

Dietrich stays in alert, waiting for the vanguard to finish the reconnaissance. The tension of the situation lets him excited and a little nervous, though he remains cool. He puts a piece of tissue before his mouth and nose in order to breath better and not to sent the smell of death so strongly.
Dietrich continues holding his mule and trys to calm down the other beasts too ("dealing with animals" 15).
He takes a better look on his imidiate surroundings, searching for possible protections and routes of escape, as well as anything suspicious.

((OOC - Tim is ill, so no posts for Olyn right now.))

Vorelle and Rose disappear out of sight from the others as they creep over the top of the rise and down toward the bell. (Zayne can still see them.)

Dietrich manages to calm the mules a little. On looking around, both he and Devlin can see nothing particularly suspicious - the way forward looks clear as far as the rise, as does the way back. Devlin can hear the mules snorting disagreeably, and the foot pads of Vauhwyt as she ascends the rise to join Zayne.

But suddenly, a piercing shriek is heard, coming from the direction Vorelle and Rose have disappeared into.
Olyn and Dietrich are nearly yanked off their feet by the mules as the animals try to escape.

Rose's mule bolts.

Both Zayne and Vauhwyt can see humanoid shapes rising up from the littered corpses surrounding Rose and Vorelle.

Much, much closer - Vorelle and Rose find themselves amongst company - as 3 ghouls rise from their positions amongst the dead.

Another ghoul steps out from its hiding place behind the bell, it's shriek bouncing and amplifying off the concave wall of the broken sound instrument.
The hideous creatures begin to advance on the two ladies.

Vorelle, Rose - DC 12 Fortitude save or act stunned for one round.

Rose, Vorelle - in melee range.
Zayne, Vauhwyt - ranged attacks only this round.
Devlin, Dietrich, Theo, Olyn - move this round, ranged attack next round etc

Vorelle is startled by the ghoul's shriek, but recovers quickly (Fort save 23). She pulls her handaxe and attacks the creature nearest her. It's a respectable blow, but not quite enough to penetrate the thing's hide (hit AC 11).

Vauhwyt (AC17, HP13, +3 on next save)
Wednesday November 12th, 2003 6:27:53 AM

Vauhwyt yells, "Undead! Come on!"

Leaping into action, Vauhwyt breaks a seal (Triple Blessing of Ward -- gives a +3 to Vauhwyt's next save if a save is called for in the next ten minutes). As she does that, she runs towards the three ghouls.

Since she is not in melee range, she stops about 65 feet from the nearest ghoul -- next round she will charge (up to 80 feet) to attack. She stops 65 feet away because she guesses that the farthest the ghouls can charge and attack is about 60 feet -- so they cannot charge her!

If she has a move action left, she takes a cure moderate wounds potion out of her left belt pouch and holds it ready to drink.

Thursday November 13th, 2003 2:00:20 AM

Down in the vicinity of the bell, amidst a sea of corpses, Rose and Vorelle attack the oncoming ghouls.

Rose's dagger embeds itself in Ghoul #1, causing it to grunt.

Vorelle just misses as she lashes out with her hand axe at Ghoul #2.

Meanwhile, Vauhwyt hurtles toward the battleground, getting into position to charge, a cure potion at the ready, just in case.

She's closely followed by Devlin and Dietrich who run swiftly to join Zayne on the rise and are now able to see the grisly sight before them. Right now, no other attackers seem apparent, other than the four shambling ghouls further down the slope.

Zayne proves himself to be very proficient with the bow once more as his arrow whacks through Ghoul #3's chest, causing it to howl and turn its ghastly visage toward him.

Devlin is now in arrow range.
Dietrich will be able to get in melee range in the next round.

Meanwhile, Theo struggles to keep the mules under control. They're proving a handful, and he reckons that one more loud shriek amplified by that bell, and the beasts will pull him in two!
Luckily (?) - thats 'all' he has to contend with right now. The slopes surrounding him are quiet.

Ghoul #4 grins. It isn't a pleasant sight.
"Fl.... fleshhhhhhhhh," it utters, glancing up the hill before gleefully dancing toward Vorelle.

Ghoul #1 lunges toward Rose, attempting to bite her. It misses the diminutive halfling.

Ghoul #2 swipes Vorelle with its claws, connecting with one for 3 DAM.
(Vorelle for save DC14 or paralyised for 5 mins)

Ghoul #3 will be within biting range of Rose in the next round, one of Zayne's arrows stuck jauntily in its chest.

((If Olyn isn't back tomorrow, could someone post for him?
I'll have a map drawn up tomorrow))

"Here...now!" Theodore bellows at the struggling mules. "It's not smart to start up with a powerful wizard, you know." Seeing that reasoning with them doesn't work, he decides to try another approach.

He takes each mule's reins in hand and tries to tie them together. He figures if they do get away from him, they'd probably have a tough go of getting too far attached together. Mules weren't very cooperative creatures to begin with.

If Theodore succeeds at this feat, which he probably doesn't, he'll throw his blanket over the head of one mule and his bedroll over the head of the other. He figures they'd be more docile if they couldn't see or hear very well.

Things start to get lively.

Vorelle anticipates her immediate foe and manages a sharp bite into Ghoul #2 with her axe.
Nearby, Vauhwyt - a whirlwind of claws, muscle and fur slams into Ghoul #4 doing an impressive amount of damage to the undead horror.

She's closely followed by Dietrich, who's sword stabs viciously at ghoul #3.
Rose, in the meantime, continues to dance with Ghoul #1, connecting with her blade.

Meanwhile, up on the ridge - Devlin keeps one eye on Theo. As far as he can tell, the young mage is safe, unless one of the mules decides to turn on him.
Dev fires an arrow into the battle. Unfortunately it flies past it's intended target and hits the bell. If it makes a sound, neither he, or the others can hear it.

Olyn reaches the top of the hillside and calls on the power of Wardd. His voice takes flight down the slope, carrying doom for all those who have no business in the land of the living.

In range - Ghoul #3, who was looking at Dietrich like he was going to eat him for breakfast, suddenly drops to the ground and cowers, mewling like a kitten.

Same goes for Ghoul#1 battling Rose. It curls into a ball at her feet, as though it is terrified.

Ghoul #4, mortally wounded and clawing for its life, attempts to tear into the liontaur - hitting with one claw and piercing for 1 DAM. its just a scratch, but enough to carry the threat of paralysis.
Fort Save reqd - DC 14

Ghoul #2 licks its lips and makes a dive for Vorelle, missing stupidly with both tooth and claw.

On the path with the mules, Theodore has some luck tying two of the mules together. He reckons he's just on the verge of getting them under control, when their ears seem to catch a sound that he can't hear -
they're instantly in a frenzy and trying to break south.

Sunday November 16th, 2003 11:37:04 PM

Vauhwyt finishes Ghoul #4 and it hangs lifeless in her mighty paws.

Ghoul #2 has a similar fate after Vorelle's axe makes it's mark along with Dietrich's sword. It crumples to the ground with one of Devlin's arrows in it's skull.

Ghoul #3 lets out a pitiful scream - and dies, as Olyn's morning star takes the life out of it.

Rose's seal affects all those in melee range - excluding bowmen Zayne and Devlin up on the ridge.

As for Ghoul #1 - its the only one alive, and its desperate howling is enough to bring a lump to the throat of the toughest warrior. It's song seems to carry to the grave.

Back on the path, the two tied-together-mules are about 50ft away from Theo, pulling and tugging at one another. He can't see what happened to Rose's mule, but from their vantage point, Devlin and Zayne can see it further south - about 100 yards away.

The mist is beginning to clear as the sun reaches its zenith, unveiling whats left of the battlefield in all its 'glory'.
Local Dirt City knowledge makes city natives remember the time, months and months ago, when man, woman and child had to man the city walls as it was stormed by a sea of foul creatures. They will remember Bull the minotaur leading the defences, and the Gold Dragons wading into battle and being almost beaten by the mysterious sound weapons.
Ah, that was a day...

And here - was the aftermath, or part of it. Hundreds, thousands dead - too many of the enemy to burn or bury.
The path ahead (north west) extends through it for a good 100 yds or more, until the ground appears to become unsullied, revealing rock and tough clumps of grass.

It is just after midday.

Without any pause, the liontaur charges the remaining ghoul. She leaps at it, and one paw connects (6 hp damage).

"Good work, my friends!" declares Vauhwyt. "It makes my heart glad to rig the Wold of this filth!"

Dietrich
Monday November 17th, 2003 7:26:00 AM

When the ghoul he was fighting with fells, Dietrich is satisfied and smiles under his helmet. He nods to Vorelle and then to the rest of the party nearby.
He looks to Olyn and is really glad to have Wardd with them.
After the mist rises and he sees the sea of corpses lying around he´s filled with sorrow and horror. He begins to realize that the 500 gp weren´t perhaps so much for what awaits them.
"Let´s take the mules and leave imediatly!"

When the party proceeds its march, Dietrich says to all:
"Friends, although we´ve won this time, and even easily, I think we have to discuss our methods. The situation could well have been much worse, that means, deadly. We´ve send the scouts ahead to be forewarned about dangers and it seemed a good idea, but perhaps this lands here are too dangerous to risk splitting the group. Though we´ll loose any possible surprise element and also risk to be trapped as a whole, and though I don´t like to march without eyes and ears ahead, I´d suggest that from now on we march all together. Who knows what other kind of foul creatures are out there."

Devlin  d20+2=22
Monday November 17th, 2003 3:59:51 PM

Devlin watches a moment longer to make sure that the group takes care of the last ghoul before slinging his bow across his back and heading to help out Theo. He curses as he sees the mules running off and tugging at one another as they try to decide independently which way to go. "This is why I didn't want to bring them in the first place," he says to himself as he trots off to try and corral the beasts.

Ignoring the dead and slaughter around him for the time being, the young fighter puts all his thought to getting the mules calmed and under reign once again.

OOC:Woohoo! I rocked on that Handle Animal roll!

DM Jan
Tuesday November 18th, 2003 1:58:55 AM

The final ghoul bites the dust.

Devlin is able to capture the two tied mules very quickly. His touch seems to calm them.

Rose's beast takes longer to retrieve, so that by the time the group is back on the road, they're running late.

Past the battlefield, the territory becomes its wild self again - rocks, hills, course grass that the mules attempt to linger and munch at.

After a tiring and uneventful afternoon, the sun starts to dip behind the slopes. It's getting dark, and cold.

Vauhwyt  d20+1=18
Tuesday November 18th, 2003 6:53:29 AM

To Dietrich's point about keeping together, Vauhwyt is not sure she totally agrees. "I think that if outwalkers stay close to the main group, say within 100 to 150 feet, then they will be far enough away to make good use of their scouting abilities but close enough to call out and get help fast in a pinch. We do have to stay within earshot, but that doesn't mean we have to hold hands!" She laughs.

Seeing that the party is about to depart the battle scene, Vauhwyt pauses."Hey! Are we not adventurerrs? That means we loot the bodies of our defeated foes and gain treasures, right?"

Vauhwyt takes a moment to poke the fallen ghouls to see if they carried anything. She also wants a look at the huge bell. "What would such a huge heavy metal object be doing on a battle field?" she muses aloud. "Either it was always herre, in which case there must have been a bell towerr. Or one of the armies brought it with them? Why would they do that?"

She looks on the bell for any inscriptions. She searches in, around, and under the bell [untrained search check 18!] She looks for the remains of a bell tower nearby.

If all this turns out to be for nought, the liontaur passes from the scene with her friends. As night falls, she shivers and comments, "Do let's build a big fire tonight, friends. I suggest that at least two people be on watch at all times."

She helps gather firewood and volunteers for a dark-of-the-night watch, since she has good night sight.

Dietrich  d20+4=22
Tuesday November 18th, 2003 8:42:06 AM

Dietrich listens to Vauhwyt´s argument and has divided feelings. On one hand he too prefers to have the scouts ahead, but on the other he´s really worry about splitting the group. If there had been 6 or 8 monster instead of 4 150ft could have been too much.
Then he says: "Actually, I don´t want to march blind and deaf too, but there could be situations ahead in which even a small delay in having all of us together could be deadly, even for the most skilled and toughest professional (he gives a look to Vorelle). But I think our scouts should take the final decision. If they think the risk is admissible I´d be the last one to object the scouting."

Dietrich doesn´t like to stay in the battlefield and he waits eagerly for the group to depart. Although he is curious about the bell too, he´s more interested in leaving that rotten place. He keeps a close eye on the surroundings, watching for other monsters (spot 22).

When the party continues marching and night comes, he relaxes a bit, takes off the helmet, the gloves and the boots for a while, glad to rest after a days march. 'What wouldn´t I do for a cold beer!'
He caressingly cleans and oils his broadsword, removing any rest of blood or flesh, and takes his other stuff from his mule. Dietrich is not very fond about making a fire, but in the end he thinks that the night will be cold and that if something wants to come at night, let it come! He´s very hungry and hopes someone can cook, as he´s tired of eating raw stuff all the time and they hadn´t lunch today.

Olyn
Tuesday November 18th, 2003 12:52:47 PM

when Vauhwyt starts looking at the bell Olyn pipes up: don't touch that bell, whatever the reason it doesnt make a sound that we can hear. I believe its what scared our mules into running. When Devlins' arrow struck the bell, it made no sound that we could hear but the mules did and it, by their actions, was not a pleasant one. so be careful around it.

walking around and seeing all the dead corpses, decaying and the fresh ones of the ghouls, Olyn begins praying for the souls of all that lay slain, and for the group that they might not be tainted by any evil doings settled here.

says: we should depart this place as soon as possible, let us put at least an hour between us and this place before settling in for the night, and yes, let us have a fire but instead of one huge fire for everyone to see for miles, let us have 3 smaller ones. in the form of a triangle, with those sleeping in the middle and those on watch just outside it. hobble the mules and tether them together just in case.

I am not an accomplished cook but I will assist anyone who has the skill in doing so. 2 sets of hands in the kitchen is always better than 1, or so my mother used to say.

(OOC sorry but my ISP went out of buisness thats why I haven't been posting regularly,I think I have it all squared away though.)

After loosing his first arrow the battle raged too fast for the young ranger. Unable to overcome his fear and surprise he stood still as his companions battled and overcame the undead.

Feeling ashamed and dissapointed in his performance,he begins to move on to gather Rose's mule and be alone with his misery.

Devlin
Tuesday November 18th, 2003 2:32:24 PM

As he walks back into the group with the mules in tow, Devlin catches the conversation about leadership, combat and scouting and adds his thoughts, "I think the point is that scouts, scout, and they do not get caught. Nor do they enter combat alone. We should do our best to be diligent in our scouting and not walk into a trap or enter combat without the full force of us all."

The young fighter hopes that is the end of the discussion as that is certainly how he sees it. He nods his head at the words of Olyn regarding the bell. "Aye, it was unusually silent when my arrow struck it. I would definitely be careful of it."

Having no desire to be there any longer than necessary, he prepares himself for the rest of the journey. Once they find a place to make camp, he acknowledges Olyn's suggestion regarding three fires and begins building one. "I would prefer a fire to protect us in case anything fell tries to wander into our camp. I will be glad to take an early watch."

DM Jan
Wednesday November 19th, 2003 1:11:57 AM

Things noted back at the battlefield:

Vauhwyt and Rose are disappointed to find that the whole area seems to have been picked clean of loot. Then again, with a city full of rogues only half a days march away, then its easy to believe.

The bell -
Olyn and Devlin appear to have the right idea about it. There's just over half of it left, and by the look of the surrounding timbers, it was carried on some kind of carriage. There are no inscriptions on it, and to all intents and purposes it looks fairly ordinary.
However, just going near it brings forth a feeling of uneasiness. Words echo back - whispers - twisted and eerie, from its curved surface.
Fingers that touch it want to recoil.
Theo's focus upon it gives him a strange vision. Somewhere deep, enclosed, with chasms all around. In this place are three beings, their features hidden by heavy robes. One of them turns, and starts to laugh. The sound is hideous. It is a sound that has gone into the very structure of the bell, part of its fabric.
The thing is broken now, but still manages to project evil by the bucketload. It is the stuff of nightmares.

Back on the track -
Dietrich spots the occasional shape shifting amongst the bodies spread over the battlefield, but nothing threatening as the group moves further north. In fact it seems deserted.
Vorelle finds a reasonable spot on slightly higher ground that gives a vantage point of the track, which is getting narrower and less defined.
Devlin finds there's enough parched shrubbery around to provide for three small fires. Rose manages to catch something that might look a bit like a rabbit - whatever it is - Olyn and Rose manage to make a good stew out of it.

The mules seem peaceful enough now they're away from the battlefield, and Rose's mule seems to have taken a shine to Zayne, following him about until it's tied.

Right now it's pitch black. Cloud cover obscures any starlight, and away from the flames, it's near freezing.

OOC - folks let me know your watches into the night? Right now I have Rose and Devlin on 1st, and Vauhwyt on 2nd, no one on third?
Give me any checks you think you might need.

Dietrich is satisfied with the camp and the stew and thanks the cooks for it, specially Rose.
He doesn´t care too much about the shape he´s seen, but he communicates the fact to the party.
After a tyring day he gladly uses the opportunity for some rest and volounteers for the 3rd watch. He proposes that the couples of guards could be composed in a way as to have at least one person with nightsight or special training. So he would like to have either Olyn or one of the rangers with him on the watch.
While he´s on guard he sits in the dark outside the light of the fires (hide 8) and listens and watches attentively. (listen 17, spot 18). He wraps himself into a woolblanket (fortitude 11 for resistence to cold) and trys to think about good things of live.

After the meal and as the others settle in for the evening he will make a few rounds circling the camp at the edge of the firelight and checking out everything along the way. He'll look to get an understanding of the foliage around them and any idea of where attack would best come from. More than anything, he does it to keep awake. He keeps his bow at hand in case of trouble or spotting anything. Eventually he'll settle down to one spot to wait out his watch.

Once relieved, Devlin makes for his bedroll immediately and does his best to get some rest.

rose washes up the dishes from dinner and crawlls into the tent she bought for the girls (its big enough for a liontaur, human, and a halfling). she sleeps warmly and soundly all night, wrapped up in a bedroll and 3 human sized wool blankets, barely waking as the others go to their watchs.

When she is awakened for her watch she grabs the flour, water and a few things she left ready to go. she leave the triangle of fires and wrapped up in a blanket and warmly dressed sits with her back to them. she looks around noting the placement of the shadows and quickly starts mixing up bread dough, looking around every few seconds. when the dough is mixed and kneaded she sets the bowl near the fire for it to rise. when it has risen (about 30-60 min) she shapes it into 4 loaves and lets it rise again (30 min) she then bakes the loaves one at a time (45 min) in the pot by placing coals under the pot and on the lid. by the time all the bread is baked it is morning and the camp is waking. she then makes oatmeal, with raisens and spices for breakfast.

After the dinner of roast critter, the party gets organised and in Zayne's case, catches some more critters.

Devlin and Vorelle take the first, while everyone else tries to get some sleep. (Theo - DC 14 Will save, or have nightmares about the vision)
Beyond the fires it's very dark, but apart from the occasional skittering of critters - everything seems safe enough.

Shift change, and Vauhwyt and Olyn take over. During this part of the night even the night creatures seem silent. It's deathly quiet - absolutely nothing to hear, and nothing to see, except for the sights and sounds coming from the campsite.

Shift change. This time Zayne, Dietrich and Rose are on the alert, and Rose preps for breakfast.
Then - just as a faint crack of dawn light is appearing over the hills...

Rose hears it first, followed by Dietrich - muffled voices, sobbing, from a north westerly direction.
Zayne and Dietrich see a shadow, or maybe two shadows moving down the path.

In the dark it's tough to make out what's going on, but Devlin's sharp observations can make out two humanoid shapes - fairly short, and stocky.

In front of Olyn on the path are two dwarves - one leaning against the other. They look frightened out of their wits. In fact one of them looks to have lost his wits altogether because he appears to be sobbing incoherently - most undwarvenlike.

From her vantage point, Rose also catches the fearful inflection in the voices.

"You a priest?" asks one of them of Olyn. "Oh, thank Wardd, thank Domi, thank 'em all. Can you help us?"

Dietrich puts away his sword, Vorelle grabs her healing kit, and the ranger and the fighter join Olyn in presenting the friendly front to the two dwarves on the path.

Meanwhile, Devlin quickly tools up and begins a quick scout around the area, just in case, and Zayne, Rose and Vauhwyt hold their positions until the motives of the two strangers are known.

By Olyn's estimation, the two dwarves don't seem physically wounded. However, they do look to be suffering from exhaustion. One of them in particular is leaning heavily against the other for support. Both Vorelle and Dietrich are close enough to notice he is shaking.

Olyn leads them into camp, and the stronger of the two nods a greeting at Theodore waiting there.

Devlin can't find anything amiss in the immediate locale, and Vauhwyt, Zayne and Rose see nothing obvious that make them suspicious.
So far, neither of the dwarves has spoken in dwarven.

The stronger of the two thanks those of the group he can see and looks around.
'We're miners,' he begins, 'and we're running to the City for help. 'Eight of our brothers are in trouble. We've got to get them out of the mine... oh, were you about to eat breakfast?'

His partner is sat huddled beside him, rocking back and forth. In dwarven he is talking to himself over and over -

Vorelle doesn't speak Dwarven, but she knows a patient in shock when she sees one (Heal check 21). She finds a blanket to wrap around the mumbling dwarf and tugs him over to sit near the fire.

She pours a mug of tea (assuming there's some ready) and wraps his trembling hands around it. If he's shaking too much to drink she will help him; otherwise she'll let go.

Dietrich accompanys the dwarves to the camp and sits down near the fire. He´ll let the others make conversation and listen to what the dwarves have to tell. If people starts breakfast he´ll eat and drink with them.

Theodore
Monday November 24th, 2003 11:30:59 AM

"Could these be the dwarves we were sent to find?" Theodore thinks out loud. A thought dawns on the young mage and he rummages through his pouches until he produces the wolf ring given him. He shows it to the dwarves hoping they'll recognize them as friends.

Monday November 24th, 2003 12:29:59 PM

turning over the care of the Dwarves to the others, Olyn goes back to his bedding and resumes meditation and prayer.

after getting all his spells for the day, Olyn then puts away his bedding on the mule, dresses in fresh clothing, and then heads over to the fire and the Dwarves for some remenants of breakfast. sitting down beside the pair Olyn asks: ok, not to rush you 2 but if we are to help save your friends at the mine we need information. what has them trapped, where in the mine are they trapped, and (producing ink, quill and parchment) can you draw us a map of the mine and the surrounding area that would help us in this endeavor?

turning to Rose he whispers: perhaps we could unload one of the mules on to the other one, and let these 2 have the mule to get them quicker in to the city. looks like one of them needs not to go back and i feel the other one escorting him would be wise.

The young fighter continues his watch over the camp as the others see to the dwarves. In the end, he takes up a position near the dwarves and the others where he can hear the conversation and weigh the responses of the refugees. He's still not too certain about them and wants to be sure and hear their tale.

The liontaur seeks to hear the whole story, and since Olyn has the situation in hand, is content to listen. She nods at Theo and shows her ring, as well.

She says that she thinks giving them a ride home is a good idea. "Just stay away from the old battlefield and that bell!"

Tuesday November 25th, 2003 2:33:25 AM

Both dwarves seem glad of the fire and Olyn and Vorelle's attention. The more coherent of the two introduces himself to the group.

"My name is Harlv, this is Bram, we're - ah..." he sees the rings. "That changes things slightly. I can divulge a little more now, you understand.
"The dig was going well. We were very close. All of us could feel it in our bones. You know how it is," he taps his nose. "And then..."

Bram looks up from his huddle of blankets.
(Dwarven)"Don't tell it, Harlv. Telling it brings it alive. Brings her alive. It's cursed. It'll spread. They'll be doomed, same as us."

Harlv continues nevertheless.
"We found... I can't explain what we found, but it wasn't mithril. Something tougher, harder, better - or so we thought. We brought it to the surface, extracted it from the ore, experimented with a few alloys.
It's beautiful..."

The dwarf seems to drift off into his story for a moment, a craftsman discussing something he loves.
"... the way it blends, compliments and strengthens. You'd never see a keener, finer blade, or tougher, lighter armour. What we could do with this!"

Bram starts to cry, and Harlv sighs before continuing.
"But it's cursed. He's right. There's something surrounding the ore, or embedded within it. It talks to you. Tells you things. Bad things.
"We decided to destroy it, collapse the dig and bury it. But something went wrong, and our brothers got buried in the tunnel. They're cut off, and two of us can't get through without help - which is why we were running for help."

He looks around.
"Please. There's enough of you to help us rescue them. Will you help us?.
He tells Olyn he'll willingly draw a map.

The party will note an earnest tone of voice coming from Harlv. He seems upset, but determined to rescue his bretheren.
Bram definitely comes across as unstable. At some point his eyes seem to meet each of the party in turn, in between his sobs.

Dietrich
Tuesday November 25th, 2003 6:53:16 AM

Dietrich listens to the talkings and agrees in giving the dwarves one of the group mules. He sees the wolf rings and the effect they have. When Bram speaks about the curse, Dietrich (who knows dwarvish) shivers and is not pleased, specially if considering Bram´s mental situation. The young knight doesn´t like this unnatural things like undead and ghosts and would surely prefer to cut some enemy of flesh and bones. Dietrich partly shares Harlv´s enthusiasm with the new metal and imagines himself the great weapons and armour a dwarven smith could make of it. He´s a little disappointed that the dig had to be collapsed.
When the dwarves end their story, Dietrich says:
"Speaking for my own, I vote for rescuing the buried dwarves, if possible. I know we´ve been hired only to discover what´s happening, but I don´t want to let the miners die there. Besides, we have to check the story anyway and the dwarves and their family would surely be very grateful to us."
Finaly, he makes his things ready for departure, putting his equipment (and possible extra stuff from the mule given to the dwarves) on his own packmule, and helps in breaking up the camp.

Devlin
Tuesday November 25th, 2003 11:12:05 AM

Devlin listens to the tale of the dwarves and then the comments of Dietrich that follow. His initial thought is that there's no money in rescuing the miners but he quickly suppresses that thought. He couldn't in good conscience leave the miners to die there if he was in a position to do something about it, no reward or not.

"Will we have the means to get them out of the collapsed mine?" he finally asks.

"And how do we know we won't open up this evil again and it will consume us all? Do we even know they're still alive?"

The more he thinks on the situation, the more doubt creeps into his mind. He wonders at this point if all they will be doing is releasing a great evil that is better left buried?

Olyn
Tuesday November 25th, 2003 12:18:39 PM

after regaining his daily allotment of spells, and loading the mules, Olyn goes back to the Dwarves and looks at the map Harlv has drawn.

after looking at the map for a bit, he has the dwarf point out the entrances, where mining tools can be found, and where the forge is that the ore was smelted. also asking where escape tunnels might be found just in case.

after getting al the answers to all the questions him and the others have asked, Olyn rolls the map up, places it in a scroll tube, and then motions for Vauhwyt to take over while he makes sure everything is set to go.

Rose comes out of hiding and starts redistributing supplies to free up a mule.

DM Jan
Wednesday November 26th, 2003 1:24:14 AM

Despite reasonable misgivings, it appears to be a unanimous decision by the group to help the dwarves at the mine.

But what DOES lie ahead? A natural mishap laced liberally with dwarven superstition? Or is Bram's appearance and behaviour a sound warning? And what about the mined 'super' mineral? It sounds valuable, wonderful - seductively so. But is it haunted or cursed, as the dwarves say?
Has it affected those trapped in the dark? Is the danger palpable, or just in the minds of Harlv and Bram?

Time will tell...

Rose pops up out of hiding, startling the two miners for a moment.
As everyone finishes breakfast and packs up, Harlv points out a few things on the map before Olyn puts it away, and attempts to answer some of Devlin's questions.

"All the digging equipment is at the entrance to the mine shaft. There are picks, shovels, carts for pulling out dirt, and plenty of rope. There's the Forge, over to the left. There's a few samples of the ore there. It should be destroyed - its evil.
The camp is on the right, we've two huts where we sleep and store provisions.
"Our brothers are stuck halfway down the shaft. It runs at an angle of about 45 degrees into the ground for about 200 yards. Thats the only tunnel. There's no other way in."

As the group gets ready to leave, it becomes obvious from Bram's speech and behaviour that he is in no state to be left alone, and Harlv wants to go back to the dig to help with the rescue. He is most insistant.

The sun is now beginning to climb and a slight breeze ruffles the tough grasses growing on the hillside.
Going off yesterday's pace, the mine should be reached by mid to late afternoon.

Dietrich
Wednesday November 26th, 2003 9:27:43 AM

Dietrich is happy about the unanimous decision to try to help the dwarves. 'Wolves or not, this people have their heart on the right place.' he thinks, reminded the bad reputation of their contractors. He shares Devlins cautions, but trys to be optimistic and has trust in Domi.
For Dietrich it´s equal if Harvl and Brams accompany the party or return to Dirt City. Both possibilities have positive and negative points.
When the group marches, Dietrich goes with his mule in the center and if the dwarves come with the party he´ll stay near them and try to talk with them.

DM Jan
Thursday November 27th, 2003 1:36:30 AM

The group set off, with Vorelle and Zayne up front on the watch out for danger.

"Burt?" says Harlv to Vauhwyt. "Yes, we know him. His cousin is stuck down in the tunnel."
He gives a sigh before continuing.
"I suppose we should have expected a party of Wolves sooner or later. Soon as they sniffed something might be wrong. After all this IS an unsanctioned dig. If the Prince of Thieves caught a whiff of this, the Wolves, AND us, would be in big, big trouble. you DID know that, yes? But we just knew there was something down there..."
The dwarf shrugs.
"A gamble in the true spirit of Wardd that didn't come off."
He then goes on to explain a little more of the tunnel collapse.
"Shifting the rocks will be the biggest part. The soil we could dig out with our hands."
Olyn, Devlin, Rose, Dietrich and Theodore are able to hear this conversation.

Sat atop one of the other mules, Bram babbles quietly to himself.
(Olyn, Theo, Rose (if she's not sleeping), Devlin, Vauhwyt, Dietrich - give me a Spot check, please).

Out in front, Zayne gets the first look at Mount Bone, far, far in the distance, which tells him the dig shouldn't be too far away. The mountain strikes hazily up against the far horizen, partially shielded by clouds at it's summit, a pale hat above the doom that lies below.
Vorelle's ears pick up the breeze, but nothing to tell her of any apparent danger. As it happens, things seem quiet on these wild hills, with nothing more than patches of scrubby grass trying to survive in amongst hard, rocky ground.

"You a military man?" Harlv asks Dietrich. "You have the bearing of one. I have a brother who's a Tower Guard for the Knives. A boy married to his axe if ever I saw one. Holds his head to high too be a miner - he'd be cracking his skull against stone every time he tried to move. Heh."

Late afternoon - both Zayne and Vorelle spot the camp ahead in a slight valley.

Dietrich  d20+4=12

When the group departs Dietrich is satisfied with their organized behaviour. 'Finaly someone put order in this unit.' he thinks in regard to Olyn´s leadership.
Listening to Harvl, he absolutely doesn´t like the part concerning unsanctioned dig, and specially the BIG trouble that awaits them if the Prince of Thieves caught a whiff of this. Too many people saw the party with Avenor and then leaving Dirt City. 'It´s always the same when dealing with this thieves.'
Talking with Harvl the young knight laughs heartly about the annedote with Harvl´s brother. Then he says: "Yeah, I´m a soldier from the far Windbourne Hills. It´s rewarding if you fight for the right things. But what would we do without the fine ore you miners dig? A fine steel is the soul of the sword. (showing Harvl his beloved broadsword). I´d like to meet your brother when we return to Dirt City. We could refresh our minds with some good beer, ha."
Finaly he asks: "But friend, tell me more about this metal and the curse. What exactly were you guys searching for and what is this curse about? What did you mean with 'we just knew there was something down there'?"
While talking, Dietrich seems to loose his attentiion on the surroundings (spot 12).

As the group approaches the camp, Harlv continues to answer questions.

"Let me tell you about that metal," he says to Dietrich. "It's better than anything you've ever seen before. That sword of yours, if the smith had added a little of this metal to the alloy - your blade would be sharper, and your aim truer. But there's a price to pay. One you'll discover if you don't keep your wits about you. Guard your thoughts, for they'll be twisted beyond recognition if you're not careful. Hard to explain until it happens.

"As for what we were looking for - mithril, plain and simple. I've been in this business for 70 years. After a while you get a good feel of what lies underground, just by looking at the rocks and land above. Of course you get hunches, too."
He shrugs.
"Don't know how those work, but we all had a big one on this dig. Like it was calling to us. Maybe it was...."

Harlv reminds Vauhwyt there are 8 miners trapped in the tunnel.
"I hope they're alright. They were alive at least when we left 'em yesterday. In Wardd's name I hope they're alright."

At that point, Bram starts to giggle. It's the most un-funny giggle any of the group has ever heard.

Theo, deep in thought will fail to note the crazy dwarf's wild eyes on him, and due to the conversation, Devlin (?), Olyn, Vauhwyt and Dietrich miss it, too.
All except for Rose, who catches him staring at her intently. He looks away a little too quickly.

The group enters the camp.

Rose lets the others know she's a little unsure of Bram and his behaviour, and as far as Vauhwyt is concerned, there are some numbers that don't add up.

So, while Zayne goes on a subtle but thorough search, Devlin and Dietrich stay on the alert and check out the camp. It's deserted.

The camp huts are empty of persons, but still stashed with gear - backpacks, sleeping rolls and the like.
The forge has a shelter built over it - there's an anvil, two benches, a pile of rocks, and one one of the benches - a shortsword - the blade smashed in two.

There's a pile of wood next to the forge, and both forge and camp fires are cold.

Vorelle has a look at Bram. He has a sickly colour, but his expression is one of serenity. A startling contrast to the behaviour out on the track.
"We're back..." he whispers with a smile.

Olyn starts to feel odd, as soon as he sets foot in the camp, nothing he can pinpoint, but it doesn't feel good.
The same happens to Theodore, and his nightmare replays in his head, as though it has been given strength.

Harlv is off and running toward the Mine entrance as soon as they arrive. He's stood there desperately bellowing "Hello?? Hello??" in both common and dwarven down the tunnel, right about the time Zayne discovers what look like two shallow graves 20ft behind the forge.

He moves over to the anvil and gets a look at the shortsword, although he makes a point not to touch the weapon. He looks to see if it might be made out of the special mineral the dwarves had uncovered. The young man passes off the news about Bram as he knows all the others are keeping a sharp eye on the dwarf. your comrade is acting very peculiar. perhaps his mind has been taken over by the evil taint and until we rescue your friends he will need to be put in restraints so as not to hurt himself or us. I have the feeling that once we reopen the tunnel into the mine to rescue the others, he will rush in like a wild man to find the center of this evil to set it free. I feel you should be told this before you see us take him down. that way there is no suprise to you and you see why we are doing it. matter of fact, if you would help us, things might go alot smoother.

***after Bram is tied up***

I dont think we can wait any longer in rescuing these dwarves. we must begin digging now, with Harlv´s direction so as not to cause another cave in that would surely kill the dwarves and possibly us. we can take turns between meals, working and resting.

Wondering about the smashed short sword, Rose starts to set up camp. Dietrich helps out and then goes and has a look at the Dig entrance.

The entrance is about 8ft by 8ft, and appears to sink into darkness, straight ahead at about a 45 degree angle. From what he can see - the walls and ceiling of the tunnel are re-inforced with wood slats.

Harlv stops yelling down the tunnel as Olyn approaches to talk to him.
"I heard them, I'm sure I heard them - they're alive!" he says excitedly. As Olyn mentions the Bram situation, Harlv looks upset.
"If we must," he says.

Theo sits down in the middle of the camp, his mind still haunted. Was there a connection between the bell and the dig? After all, the tunnel's direction was exactly in line with the distant Mount Bone, brooding on the far horizon.

While the ravenous Zayne risks poking around Rose's cookpots, Devlin takes a closer look at the smashed shortsword.
It has an unusual sheen to it, and looks darker than normal steel. The longer he looks at it, the more beautiful it seems, despite its current broken state.
((Clint - Will Save DC 13 for Devlin or pick up the weapon.))

Suddenly, Bram leaps up and makes a dash past Vorelle and Vauhwyt, heading for the Forge. It looks like tying this dwarf up is going to be no picnic.

Vauhwyt is uncharacteristicly silent as she watches the scene unfold. Her feelings of paranoia and impending doom grow, and she senses that soon action -- drastic action -- will be necessary.

And when Bram dashes past her, at first Vauhwyt is startled, and then she is like a nervous housecat past whom a mouse has just dashed. Without thinking, Vauhwyt leaps after the crazed dwarf, charging, and pounces!

[OOC: If Vauhwyt surprises Bram with her attack, then she will grapple. If he is not flat-footed, she simply strikes out.]
[Grapple: first a melee touch attack to grab Bram: grabs AC 14. Then a grapple check to pull him down: Opposed grapple check is 13. If the grapple succeeds, then her subdual damage is 5hp]
[Or striking: hits AC 14 and 17 charging with paws for 12 hp damage]

Things get very strange very quick. Theodore´s aggressive answer surprises the fighter, but he thinks: 'If need be, I´d tie you too, for your best.' He gives a look to Olyn and hopes the priest may do something divine to calm people down.
As Bram tries to break out to the dig, Dietrich positions himself directly in front of the entrance, so that the dwarf would have to pass over him to get into the dig. When the dwarf aprouches, Dietrich trys to hit him with his fist.

Looking at the smashed weapon, Devlin is undeniably drawn to how beautiful it is. The more he looks, the more he notices the intricacies and subtle beauty deep within the metal. The dark sheen of the metal is so striking, he can imagine his own rapier being made out of such amazing material. Unable to stop himself, he reaches out to pick up the shortsword and feel the weight of it. Wrapped up in the beauty of the weapon, he completely ignores the dwarf and everything else going on around him.

Will save: 12 (missed it by that much!)

Theodore
Tuesday December 2nd, 2003 10:30:42 PM

Theodore grumbles at Olyn and Dietrich's threats, but says nothing outright. He's used to being bullied.

He quickly stands at Bram's outburst, seeing the dwarf run frantically for the forge and several of his team members lunge for him. The stunned mage stumbles away from the camp. "I just need to be alone for a bit. I'll clear my head..." he mutters as he walks easterly.

It soon becomes obvious where Bram is headed, as he struggles against the others for as long as possible in an effort to get to the Forge, where Devlin is standing.
He's no match for Vauhwyt, Dietrich, Zayne and Vorelle's combined efforts though, and is knocked out cold.

Olyn gets a rope.

Rose can see Harlv shaking his head with compassion toward Bram, but his eyes show resignation that perhaps this is for the best. He looks like a man struggling to maintain control in a very uncontrollable situation.

She also sees Devlin pick up the broken shortsword - uh oh, and Theodore walk a little away from the camp.

Out behind the camp huts, Theo finds himself away from the extra stimuli of the group and the dwarves.
His nightmare had let him see a little piece of the evil that lurks this land, and the focus of it - the big mountain far in the distance.
Evil that if let loose, would make the world a VERY nasty place indeed.
Here, his mind can think.

Over at the Forge, Devlin can't help but pick up the broken sword. It appears to fit his hand perfectly, as though it was made just for him. In his head, he hears a sigh - a sigh of relief, and it sounds vaguely female, and although in its current state, the sword would probably only do the same damage as a dagger, he feels very reluctant to put the weapon down.
((Will Save DC 14 to have a choice in the matter))

Back at the mine shaft entrance, its obvious that Harlv wants to start down the tunnel to check on his buddies.

Dietrich
Wednesday December 3rd, 2003 9:56:04 AM

"Very well then." he says after Bram is tied up.
"So, what are we going to do now. Personaly I don´t like to enter the dig at night, but on the other hand I want to get out of this place as soon as possible. If you all prefer to start the rescue now, so be it.
Harvl, please draw a map of the dig itself, are there many ways and rooms and stuff like that?"

Rose
Wednesday December 3rd, 2003 11:14:40 AM

"Devlin dont pick up that sword!!"

Rose yells then seeing theo leave

"Theo where are you going" She asks

Theodore
Wednesday December 3rd, 2003 11:36:18 AM

Theodore looks back over his shoulder at Rose, "I'm okay, Rose. I just need to be alone so that I can think."

The mage walks a little further out and lets his mind wander. "Obviously the closer I get to that mine shaft, the more powerful the influence against me. Hmm... Perhaps," here he trips over a rock and barely catches himself. He stops. "Perhaps the bell was made of the same metal from this mine. And what is the connection between the metal and the mountain from my dreams?"

Theodore gently taps his lips with his forefinger as he muses. "All I have to go on is the metal, right now. Perhaps I can get more answers from that. But, the closer I get to the mine...will I be able to control myself? I don't want to put the party in any danger." He begins to pace with his hands behind his back.

Olyn
Wednesday December 3rd, 2003 12:14:56 PM

turning his head sharply to look in Devlins' direction when Rose screams out.

Harlv, is the broken weapon that Devlin is holding made from the tainted ore you were talking about?

**if given an affirmative response**

walking towards Devlin defensively while saying: Devlin my son, drop that weapon. it is no good to you plus its evil might taint your soul. you wouldn't want that to happen now would you?

**if given a negative response**

Harlv, how can we be assured that when we rescue your comrades, that they won't have succumbed to the evil within and that whatever else might be down there be loosed upon the Wold?

Asking Vorelle and Vauhyt,"Can you two handle this?"

**If they say yes. He heads over to Devlin,"Why don't you put that garbage down so we can have something to eat and try to rummage up something to drink?" Moving casually, avoiding sudden movements.

** If not he will stay and help bind the dwarf(use rope 24 natural 20)

Vauhwyt  d20+11=25
Wednesday December 3rd, 2003 8:21:02 PM

The liontaur literally sits on the crazed dwarf until he is safely trussed. "Good work," she says to Vorelle. If Bram is conscious, she asks him, "Now, my friend, where is it you were off to?" She picks him up and looks around.

Vauhwyt sees that so far as she can tell, things are going to heck in a handbasket. "We have to stick togetherr!" she calls out. "We have to face this togetherr!" More softly, she mutters, "In every scary story I ever heard, the folks who split off alone come to bad ends."

Carrying Bram, she staggers over towards Devlin. As she does so, she calls out, "Come friends. Follow me, and stay together. She says to Devlin, "Take the sword or not, but stay with us."

Then she tries to shepherd the group towards Theodore. "We need to keep together or we may end up dead or worse!" She uses the force of her personality to get people moving. [Intimidate check 25]

DM Jan
Thursday December 4th, 2003 1:22:03 AM

Harlv winces as Bram goes down and gets manhandled, but is then distracted by Dietrich who asks for a map of the actual dig itself.

Rose tries to stop the inevitable with Devlin, and calls to Theodore, who's trying to figure things out.

Olyn asks Harlv about the broken shortsword.
"Rocks and stones!!!" exclaims the dwarf. "I'd forgotten about that. Don't let him touch it! It's evil!"

Zayne approaches Devlin as his comrade picks up the broken weapon, while in the meantime, Vauhwyt and Vorelle do a good job of tying up Bram.
"Mine!" growls the dwarf, "that sword is mine!" and starts wriggling like an eel.

The day begins to darken as the afternoon sun disappears over the hill and twilight approaches.
The liontaur is probably correct in her assumption that being alone around here isn't a good idea.

There's a decision to be made.
Rescue the dwarves now? Wait till morning? Try a reconaissance trip down the tunnel?

((Folks - I'll get a map to you tomorrow))

Thursday December 4th, 2003 7:07:09 AM

The rogue liontaur continues her efforts to keep everyone together. "Come, people, stay with me." She sets the wriggling Bram down gently not too far from Devlin and asks Vorelle to watch him.

"I'm worried that Theodore should not be out there alone!" Vauhwyt says, pacing nervously. "Rose, could you and Olyn go get him? I think he will listen to you two. Tell him that he has to stick with us!"

As she says this, Vauhwyt paces back and forth, getting closer to Devlin.

"We don't want Theodore to be taken away from us." -- but with the way she looks over Devlin's head as she says "take away," she is really trying to send the group a secret message that Devlin will not understand [Bluff check 18 to send a secret message] -- and the message is, DISARM DEVLIN!

As she does this, Vauhwyt readies an Aid Other action -- her goal is to be behind Devlin when someone else tries to Disarm him. She will therefore be flanking [gives a +2 on the Disarm] AND using the Aid Other to help disarm [attack check 18 gives another +2 on the attempt].

[So Vauhwyt is trying to secretly tell the group to Disarm Devlin, and she is ready to Flank and Aid Other in the attempt -- giving a +4 to the disarmer.]

Thursday December 4th, 2003 8:32:53 AM

In the middle of his talkings about the map for the dig, Dietrich hears Rose´s yell and sees Devlin taking the sword. With Harvls warning about the sword´s evilness, the knight perceives that the situation is serious enough. He moves slowly towards Devlin, staying in his front, so that Vauhwyt can flank him. He says (just to call Devlin´s attention and help Vauhwyt´s manouver): "Hey comrade, let this broken sword and come eat and drink with us!"
** If Devlin doesn´t listen to the party and doesn´t let the sword down, Dietrich trys to grap his arm, but fighting defensively, to avoid been wounded by the evil weapon. (attack -4, ac +2)

Devlin  d20+1=11
Thursday December 4th, 2003 10:33:03 AM

Devlin initially shudders as he hears, or better yet, feels the sigh of relief in his mind. The sword was so beautiful and seemed to fit him to swell. It was a masterful weapon, surely crafted for one such as he. He ignores Rose's command for him to drop the weapon and is angered as Olyn comes forward to talk to him about it.

"Son? Boy, do not patronize me or try to steal from me with your silvered tongue. Step away, I have what is mine by right."

He moves the sword to his left hand and draws his rapier, holding it out before him between he and Olyn.

As Zayne moves closer, he feels a twinge of regret and tries to hold onto the wisdom of his friends words. But the beauty of the sword catches his eye again and he snaps out of it. It didn't matter how many drinks he and Zayne had shared together, he wouldn't allow him to steal his sword.

"Keep that filthy dwarf away from me," he says as he backs away from the approaching group. "I see your minds, you can't fool me. You'll kill me and take the sword for your own. Well, you'll find that a difficult task."

He does his best to back away from the oncomers, moving to put something at his back and keep the others from surrounding him. "Stay away, Vauhwyt," he says as she moves to flank him. "I'll have no problems skewering you where you stand."

"BACK AWAY, ALL OF YOU!"

Devlin can't really believe his own words but each time he thinks or feels he's doing wrong he catches a glimpse of the beautiful darkness in the blade and shakes the thoughts from his mind. It's mine. All mine. None of them will have it.

Olyn

walking around the forge to find Theo sitting there, regaining his thoughts.

walking up and plopping on the ground beside the mage Olyn begins: so, Theo, what's up man? what has you so jittery lately? I realize where we are is not the most comfortable situations. If it was me, I would rather be back down in our apartment than in this wide open place but fortunes have us here now. And as Vauhwyt says we all need to stick together. I know you see the reasoning in this, we shouldn't split up. Bad things do come to those who wander off and frankly, I care not to see anything bad happen to any of us, including you.

*dramatic pause*

Tell you what Theo. Lets you and me go back to the group and lets see if we can put our heads together, you and I, and figure out a reasonable solution to our predicament. With your Intelligence and my Wardd given Wisdom, together you and I should be able to come up with a reasonable compromise. What say you my friend? Besides Theo, it is getting dark and by the sound in our bellies it is time for nourishment. Don't want to alert any Orcs to our whereabouts by the sound coming from our tummies. <insert smile here>

Vorelle stays where she is, keeping a hand on Bram, willing him to be still. It scares her, seeing him like this, seeing Devlin acting the way he is. It reminds her of the way people can get about their rum, or some kinds of narcotics. She's seen the results firsthand, and she doesn't care to see them played out here.

"I-it'll b-b-be alright," she whispers to Brom. But she doesn't believe it.

Theodore
Thursday December 4th, 2003 11:16:04 PM

Theodore continues his pacing not noticing that Olyn has approached until he almost stumbles across the priest. "Oh...Olyn." The mage is startled out of his mental rummaging.

"I'm not trying to be a handful," he begins to explain to Olyn. "It's just, the closer I am to the mine...the harder it is to concentrate. I think that there may be a connection between..." Just then Rose rushes up asking for Theodore's help in subduing Devlin.

The young mage gathers his pants and quickly makes his way back to the camp and comes upon the scene with his teammates struggling against one another. If all goes well and the situation is resolved, Theodore does nothing. Otherwise, he'll cast color spray on Devlin, and anyone who happens to be in the way.

(If Theo casts color spray, Devlin, and anyone else, will save vs DC 14)

DM Jan
Friday December 5th, 2003 1:16:12 AM

Vauhwyt alerts the others to the fact that it might be an extremely good idea to part Devlin from that broken sword. This is underpinned by Devlin's reaction as he is approached.

Those close to him will be able to see a feral look to his eye, and that his skin seems to have taken on a strange pallor, as though he's been locked in a dark place for a month or two.
Weird.

Olyn goes after Theo, finding the apprentice mage deep in thought about the effects of this place on the mind and possible clues.
They are discussing this, along with the pros and cons regarding the best way to stay alive, when Rose alerts them to whats happening with Devlin.

Devlin sees his friends starting to surround him as he brandishes his rapier and the shortsword.
There's also a bewitching scenario going through his head. A ballroom, bedecked with lush velvet drapes and glittering chandeliers. There are two people there - Devlin and a lady - dancing slowly together.
She's beautiful - shifting between the perfect grandmother, mother, sister, wife, lover, daughter - there to be cherished, loved and protected.
Loved.
Vauhwyt shifts position to his rear. Zayne looms closer.
Protected!!
Then the dance changes tempo, becomes more urgent. Devlin 'feels' the lady grip him tightly, and they begin to spin around and around. She smiles up at him. The smile changes to the rictus grin of the dead - terrible to look upon.
But he can't get free. Or can he?
Protect me!!!!

The group moves in.
((Folks bear with me on this - messageboard format etc etc))

Dietrich attempts to grab Devlin, and Zayne leaps in for a bear hug.
They both connect.

((Peter could you roll a STR check for Devlin to oppose?))

At this point Devlin has the opportunity to try and escape the grip the sword has on him - ((WILL SAVE DC 15))
Or - if he can oppose Zayne's and Dietrich's STR checks
Dietrich ?
Zayne 14
Then he can attack.

At this point, Vauhwyt and Theo still have to make their attacks this next round. Zayne and Dietrich can attempt to disarm.

A short distance away, Vorelle stays with Bram, recognising correctly that he's been made a slave to something that will be the ruin of him.
He seems in the grip of a fever.

((I'm sorry if this is a bit messy, folks. Post your actions as best you can, and I'll try and bring us into step during the next round))

He yells to Vauhwyt: "Help us!"

Theodore
Friday December 5th, 2003 11:05:52 AM

Theodore comes upon Dietrich, Devlin, and Zayne locked in a struggle for the sword. "You know," he says as he begins to focus the magic within himself. "If the sword can possess Devlin by him touching it, then it can do the same should Zayne or Dietrich contact it. STAND BACK!" he yells for everyone not directly invovled in the conflict.

Theodore seems to grow more imposing as the magic strengthens within him:

"See my power and be blinded with awe,
As if struck by a mighty bear's paw!"

A brilliant cone of rainbow colors springs from his hand towards Zayne, Dietrich, and Devlin.

(All three must make a will save vs DC 14 or fall unconcious, blinded, and stunned for 2d4 rounds, then blinded and stunned for 1d4 rounds, and then stunned for 1 round.)

Devlin enjoyed the strange mental dance that the sword was taking him on, his memory filling in the faces that flickered in and out of his vision. Mother! Mama! Isinia... Maera... Jules... His emotions swam through that of a faithful son and grandson to that of friend and lover, each image pulling him closer into the mystery of the beautiful sword he held so tightly. Why couldn't the others just leave him alone? he thought as he reluctantly comes out of the strange dance, the odd undead image at the end doing nothing to lessen his feelings for the blade.

I'll protect you, my love! Devlin yells as Zayne and Dietrich attempt to lunge at him and steal the blade!

His rapier reaches out to bite into Zayne before coming around at Dietrich. Devlin follows up with a swing of the shortsword at Dietrich but misses again. The burly fighter then grabs him and holds tight.

OOC: Ok, I'm going to leave the whole sequence up to Jan but he should get an AoO against Zayne for attempting to grapple with him. He hits (22, nat 20), threatens critical but not (3), for 8 damage. He then attacks Dietrich twice, once with his rapier (13) and once with the shortsword (13). I'm assuming both of those miss. His Will save is a 6, so he failed that for the 3rd time. His opposed strength roll is a 4, so Dietrich grabs him I suppose. His penalty for 2 weapons was -2/-2 as he has the two-weapon fighting feat and his off-hand weapon is light. Sorry Zayne! He also fails Theodore's color spray will save (8).

He's obviously going to do all he can to break the hold on him.

The scuffle gets desperate, as a bewitched Devlin does his best to hang on to that sword!

Both Zayne and Dietrich (with Vauhwyt ready to pounce at the opportune moment) lunge for their comrade, who responds with uncharacteristic savagery. Zayne gets cut badly as he gets a hold of Devlin in a bear hug.
The blades miss Dietrich as he powers into Devlin and grabs for the shortsword. For one horrible moment his fingers lie on the sword hilt, which becomes dislodged in Devlin's hand.
The soldier feels a sharp charge of evil desire that threatens to flower and grow.

However, at that point, Theodore, Rose and Olyn arrive at the scene - Rose a little further behind as she attempts to keep up with those longer legs.

WHAP!!!!
Theodore's spell hits the grapplers with a cone of dazzling colour.
Vauhwyt and Dietrich go down from the effects of it.
Zayne and Devlin overbalance as Devlin also goes out for the count.
Zayne is still conscious but is bleeding badly.

The sword, knocked loose and suddenly finding itself without an owner, spins once, twice, in the air and falls - embedding itself in the ground 4 feet away from those sprawled on the ground.

Devlin's mind is suddenly free of the weapon's influence, but he remembers what he's just done - all too well in glorious technicolor.

It takes some time for those hit by the spell to come around and into the aftermath shared by the remainder of the group, and twilight is beginning to give way to the dark of night time.

Harlv, with two gloves on one hand, is gingerly placing the sword and its broken pieces into a sack, and then dropping the bundle into another sack. He looks very distressed.

Beneath Vorelle, Bram begins to sob, all the fight has gone out of him.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he's whispering over and over.

"You didn't kill them, Bram. It was the blasted sword," growls Harv, who adds to the others - "Two of our brothers lie slain not forty paces away. He didn't murder them, The sword did. It'll kill us all unless we take it back where it belongs."

He remembers the touch of the weapon and the strange desire it caused. He looks after it but can´t find it and is actually relieved.
Dietrich stays still in alert towards Devlin and will wait to see his reaction before doing anything.

"Zayne. Zayne! Is he alive?" the memory of his rapier piercing his friends flesh is all too vivid in his mind as he looks about for his friend. Devlin couldn't imagine what he would do if he found he had killed his companion.

Although he still felt a strange longing for the sword, he now had a deep hatred of it as well for the things it had made him do. He was only thankful that his companions had been able to subdue him before he did further harm.

Seeing Rose helping her companions, Vorelle takes a look at Bram. Has the madness that gripped him really gone away? Would it be safe to untie him?

Harlv has the shortsword shielded in sack cloth and tucked away, making it easier for the group to come to terms with what happened and shake off its influence.
The sword's threat is obviously to be taken seriously, and one has to wonder what would happen if any of this ore reached the City.... even just a small piece of it.

Olyn moves to heal up Zayne, and in moments the ranger's wound begins to pucker and dry. Rose helps out in checking over everyone's bruises and scratches.

Vorelle's assessment of Bram gives her the impression that madness still dances behind his eyes. He was calm now, but....

By the time everyone is fully coherant and feeling better, its completely dark, and a plan has to be made.

Harlv walks around, lighting a few lanterns, and then pushes their poles into the ground near the mine shaft entrance.
"We caused a rockfall half way down the tunnel," he says. "Only trouble was, we were caught in the middle of it. There are two big stones to shift down there somehow, and then I think we can get 'em out."

Next to the shaft, are 3 pickaxes, 2 large hammers, 2 shovels, 4 5ft-lengths of rope, and 2 6ft-lengths of 4x4 timber.

Dietrich stands up and is happy that finaly there is some peace and that Zayne could be cured. He is a little worried, for in few minutes and even before really starting the rescue, there has been so much trouble. He asks Devlin: "Are you allright man?"
Than he directs himself to Theodore and says: "Don´t worry friend, you saved the situation with your powers! If I knew you could do that I woudn´t have even tried to disarm Devlin.", giving him a friendly claps on his shoulder.
"Let´s finaly eat something, I´m starving! Then, if you all prefer, we can start the work"

The knight isn´t sure anymore about the hole action and hopes they won´t have to kill 8 mad dwarves in the dig, but he keeps his thoughts for himself.

Looking at Devlin for any signs of trickery.(sense motive 16) Then looking to Olyn,"I feel as good as new." Despite the severity of the situation the young ranger is in good spirits.

Looking around and seeing the sword,"It needs to be destroyed. It's too dangerous to be left anywhere."

After a few moments to think,"I think after we save the dwarves,we need to collapse the mine, and then when we report to the wolves we recomend that they come up with a way to permanently seal the area off."

Theodore
Tuesday December 9th, 2003 12:32:24 PM

Theodore is thankful that no one bears him any ill will for his little magic stunt. Before he can think any further on the matter, his stomach growls in protest. The young mage looks sympathetically at his midsection and says, "Oh, poor guy! I've been neglecting you, haven't I! I'm so very sorry. Let's remedy the situation as quickly as possible."

He looks up with an amused grin which quickly disappears as a blush spreads across his face. Some of his group were giving him odd looks. He clears his throat. "I'm hungry. Might I try some of your stew, Rose? It looks delicious."

As he settles down with something to eat, supplemented with swallows from his waterskin, Theodore overhears Zayne's advice to tell the Wolves about the situation. "We should tread carefully, I believe. They're thieves, not philanthropists. If the situation presents itself as a way to get a leg up on the competition, they might utilize that ore."

Devlin
Tuesday December 9th, 2003 2:45:24 PM

Although apologetic to Zayne and the others for his actions, Devlin remains to himself as he tries to come to terms with what he did. He offers little word as to what their next course of action should be, simply nodding from time to time during the discussion. When offered, he accepts the meal but mainly picks at his food, unable to find his appetite.

Olyn
Tuesday December 9th, 2003 3:24:17 PM

after all have been checked, rechecked and double rechecked for wounds, Olyn heads to the cook fire and gets himself a plate of grub. during dinner, Olyn gets up and seats himself beside Devlin. noticing him picking at his food and realizing the inner turmoil he must be going through, Olyn places his plate on the ground beside him.

after a few minutes of quiet contemplation, Olyn turns to Devlin saying: my child, and yes, in age compared to me you are a child, and a man nonetheless. I do not look down on people due to age. if I did I would still be in the church, not out here with my new friends tending to their spiritual needs. which brings me to the point. your spirit seems to be healed and I am here to attempt that healing. there are times, Devlin, when certain forces are too great for us to overcome, like what happened to you. I have experienced it, Vauhwyt has and so has others, and those who havent will soon I bet. but with faith, in yourself and your friends, is that eventually you will overcome it and use its experiences for the next battle you have to do. it never gets easier, trust me, spiritual warfare never gets easy. it takes alot of faith. alot of trust in something greater than you. knowing there is something out there that will help you overcome. to be victorious in your battles. perhaps you lost this one to learn a lesson. that noone is invincible. but with friends, and new comrades, and faith you were able to overcome and be victorious.
now, I see on your face that you feel hurt, not only in the fact as to what happened to you, but what this evil caused you to do to your friends. noone here is blaming you, nor is anyone here holding a grudge against you. we know what happened and together we overcame it.
just know this, and I think I speak for us all, you are a part of this family and noone gets left behind.

(smiling a soft, honest smile)

standing up he places his hand on Devlins shoulder saying: pray to the Gods this night and thank them for delivering you from this evil, for without them, we are all lost.

Olyn then wanders over to the pile of tools next to the tunnel, grabs a shovel and pick and heads off into the tunnel to begin working.

Vorelle
Tuesday December 9th, 2003 10:07:29 PM

Vorelle doesn't release Bram's bonds, but she does try to make sure he's as comfortable as possible before grabbing a bite to eat.

She can't make pretty speeches like Olyn, but she's seen addiction firsthand, and she's glad the metal, whatever it is, didn't get Devlin. At the first opportunity, she puts her hand on his shoulder and gives a reassuring squeeze.

Vauhwyt
Tuesday December 9th, 2003 10:31:06 PM

Just after recovering from the spray of colors, Vauhwyt staggers over to Theodore and says, "Well done!"

She helps set up a quick camp and grabs a bite to eat, but not very much.

She is glad to see Olyn and Vorelle reassure Devlin. The liontaur leaves the man in peace, though. "I'm better at threats than comforts," she thinks.

Vauhwyt is uncomfortable with the thought of decieving the Wolves, although she readily admits to herself that the Wolves have not yet proven their trustworthiness. She gives no word of her uncertainty on this, though her tail betrays her emotions.

When Dietrich and Olyn seem ready to do some work, Vauhwyt is happy at the distraction. However, her natural paranoia kicks in. "Hey Olyn, don.t go alone! In fact, I think we should never go anywhere alone, but only in twos and threes!"

"Harlv, come show us the work to be done."

"But first, please watch the bag with the sword. Let no one watch it alone. Keep alert! And care for Bram as well!"

Then she goes with Olyn and hopefully Bram to the mine. She notes the tools available and shows Harvl her block and tackle -- and her silk rope. "With these, I think we can haul away the two big stones."

rose serves everyone dinner and feeds bram. "I'd like last watch tonight, and why dont you choose someone to wash the dishes" She says as she feeds bram.
