Into the Testing Caverns

Bypassing the hurdle - Dm Ian
Wednesday December 17th, 2003 6:26:46 PM

Renik blinks through the door, inspects the other side, and easily opens the heavy oaken door for the rest of the group. With this, the group finds a set of ten foot side stairs leading downward.

Negotiating the steps downward is a little tricky. The nearby ocean can be heard as a series of distant thumps, and the carved stone walls and floor here are beaded with moisture, making them a little slick.

The staircase goes down about two hundred feet, and at the bottom, Thelonius can see the staircase open into some kind of natural cavern with no available light other than what you are carrying.

If nobody objects Feng will take the lead and inform the others what he does see.

Setanos (Mage Armor)
Thursday December 18th, 2003 7:42:36 AM

As the latch lifts, Setanos draws his greatsword and stands at the ready, muscles tensed. He nods to Feng, and offers to take up position behind him. He then reviews his memorized spells. When the party's ready he moves down into the tunnel.

Tratain says "Well lets be about it then. Hopefully we'll find some answers in here. I'll Travel towords the middle of the group so I can react to threats from either side and heal those who need it."

Tratain casts several prepetory spells upon himself and puts on his goggles of night to ready himself for what may be lurking in the cavern.

Frowning as his suggestion goes unnoticed and apparently undone. Rond comments to Renik, "I can go out front with you. Though I need a little bit of light to work with." With that he moves on out into the hallway as far as the light will penetrate. Doing his best to blend into the shadows (17), Rond becomes very noiseless (43) as you see him go into the shadows.

In the dark - DM Ian
Thursday December 18th, 2003 5:42:23 PM

Reaching the bottom of the staircase, the characters find a rough cavern about twenty feet in diameter ringed with four ten by ten side alcoves. A hallway that leads north.

The low light carried by the middle of the party illuminates just deep enough to reveal that each alcove has a humanoid skeleton standing in it.

In the first alcove, the skeleton bears a sign decorated with a set of glyph-like smears. Ine the second and third alcoves, the skeletons stand with empty hands. In the fourth alcove, the skeleton has one arm hacked off and held in the other. It is pointing with its own appendage at a position just around the corner in its alcove, probably on the floor.

When Thel slips into the room hidden, the second skeleton speaks in a gravelly voice, saying, "Beyond your reach when broken, within your reach made whole." The third one speaks also, in the same voice, saying, "Oblivion, or Testing? Darkness conceals the differences."

None of the skeletons have any arms or armor.

Rond sees no tracks in the area.

(All scouts, please give me a listen check.)

Draax
Thursday December 18th, 2003 7:24:04 PM

Draax freezes in his tracks when he hears the voices. He looks around at the skeletons and their surroundings as he listens to the words.

Feng
Thursday December 18th, 2003 10:09:13 PM

Feng examines each of the skeletons for some lucky flash of insight. Puzzles were not his strong point and Feng had no way of knowing if it indeed was a puzzle.

"What do you think it means?"

Renik  d20+8=21 d20+11=25
Friday December 19th, 2003 4:22:34 AM

The rogue walks quietly into the center of the cavern. "Of course" he smiles, "the wizard had hurdles to overcome to reach the school. We have merely taken up where he left off."

"Well," he says in a soft voice, "It would seem each of our four undernourished friends here is providing us with a clue as to how to proceed. So let us be methodical in our approach.

The first skeleton is holding a sign. Let me see..."

Renik approaches the first alcove, but does not enter it. He studies the smeared glyphs carefully, attempting to extract some meaning from them (Decipher Script 21).

"Anyone else with linguistic ability, please take a look at this, see if you can help work it out. Do we have any spells that might help us?"

OK, Skelly number 2 has a thing for riddles. Now what is he talking about? What is it that is now broken that must be made whole so that we might proceed? What can be broken and made whole? Silence, I suppose. Or Darkness perhaps... hmm, this could be about dark and light, given the comments of cluemaster number 3...

Oblivion or Testing, Darkness conceals the difference. That sounds like we should cast light to tell which path to take, but it may also mean that Darkness reveals a third choice.

And our last bony buddy seems to be pointing at something. Could someone take a look at what that is? Be sure to touch nothing, and don't get too close."

(Listen 25)

Setanos (Extended Mage Armor)
Friday December 19th, 2003 7:51:41 AM

Setanos cocks his head towards the paladin. "I think it means that unless we gots a better idea, we smash these abominations and find our own ways down."

He listens to Renik's appraisal of the situation and trying to stay his hand against these things.

Tratain [Shield of Faith; Endurence; Spell Immunity: Fireball, Lightning Bolt]
Friday December 19th, 2003 3:31:01 PM

Tratain says "I hope that if we need a light spell continual light will do. Otherwise we'll be waiting a day unless someone else can cast it. Maybe we should check what that mage had in his scroll tube, he's hunting for this place longer than we have. Maybe he's found clues and items elsewhere that we may need."

A mystery unfolding - Dm Ian  d20+2=17
Friday December 19th, 2003 5:46:59 PM

Renik looks into the first alcove, and even in the low light can make out some additional details of note. To the left side of the alcove against the wall, there is a pile of some unidentifiable material in the low light, which at this close range bears a faint, rank stench. Examining the sign, Renik can't quite make out the meaning, but is sure the repeating shapes in the smeared glyphs are definately a form of language.

(OOC: Please send me an email if you need to take a break until after the holidays. If so, please let me know if you would like to restart the monday after christmas, or on the 1st of the new year.)

Emboldended by Reniks find, and by virtue of shifting position, the remainder of the group sees a bit more of the contents of the other alcoves.

The second alcove has a hole in the floor just behind the skeleton. The hole isn't much more than a few inches in diameter, and a piece of badly frayed old rope lies partially in the hole.

The third alcove has a similar hole behind the skeleton, however, with no rope. Even in this light level, the characters can see that the hole itself is utterly black, as if filled by darkness or a black liquid. Closer examination would be required to know more.

The skeleton in the fourth alcove is using its severed arm to point at another, similar hole in the wall on the right side of the area. Closer examination would be required to gather more information about the hole.

Renik doesn't hear anything specific, other than the distant hammering surf against the bedrock.

Arien has already examined the scroll tube, and found it to contain a scroll with a single spell, repulsion.

Tratain believes that a single bright light source would probably illuminate a number of details about the area.

Rond
Friday December 19th, 2003 6:20:43 PM

"I don't know about Oblivion, but couldn't a broken arm keep something out of reach, at least until it was made whole?"

Feng
Sunday December 21st, 2003 11:32:59 PM

Feng watched with interest. Whoever was creative enough to create such a puzzle would be a dangerous foe indeed.

"Is it possible that there would be something in the bard's room about solving this puzzle?"

Setanos (Extended Mage Armor)  d20+8=9
Monday December 22nd, 2003 8:53:26 AM

Setanos examines the Skeletons, pondering if his simple skills at cowering these abominations would be enough to handle them. He tries to look for any sort of supports on the skeletons that would indicate that they are other than animated undead.

He then turns to the group.
"I'm not for playing this necromancers game. Lets smash tha things and find our own way down."

Renik  d20+11=23 d20+9=29
Monday December 22nd, 2003 1:34:58 PM

"Only as a last resort, Set" says Renik. Let's see if we can work this puzzle out first. Feng, I searched the bard's room, and found nothing that suggested itself. If we really hit a blank we can take another look, but let's explore a bit more first.

Come on, someone else must have some linguistic skills to help with Skelly 1. Thelonius, see if you can shed a little light on Skelly 4. One of you spellcasters, we may require magical light to be placed in that hole next to skelly 3. And Someone else examine the hole and rope near Skelly 2. Come on people, if some necromantic spellcasting scum could solve this puzzle so can we."

Renik fetches a sunrod from his pack, and by its light examines the rank smelling material behind Skelly 1 (Spot 23, Search 29).

Draax  d20+5=6
Monday December 22nd, 2003 3:06:57 PM

Draax looks at the others, "Puzzles have never been my thing and I have no idea about how the warp mind of a necro would think, but I'll take a look at skelly with the hold and the rope. Who knows I might get lucky."

Draax goes near the hole and the rope and takes look at them without touching. (spot check 6)

Tratain [Shield of Faith; Endurence; Spell Immunity: Fireball, Lightning Bolt]
Monday December 22nd, 2003 4:05:34 PM

Tratain will examine each of the 4 alcoves in turn, spending more time on the first as others are examining the others.

He says "I can cast read magic, I don't know if it will help at all in desciphering the sign but it can't hurt. I will also cast detect magic and see if I can see anything that may be useful. If all else fails we can always wait until tomorrow so I can memorize some new spells."

Digging for clues - Dm Ian  d20=1 d20=11 d20=18
Monday December 22nd, 2003 6:55:16 PM

Setanos looks over the skeletons, and finds them to be aged, unimpressive examples of the type of undead. They were probably once humans, but not particularly large examples of the race, and certainly weaponless pose zero threat to the group. Casual blows would probably shatter each one.

Renik issues a series of suggestions to his companions. His light illuminates the larger area clearly before he takes it into the first alcove.

The second alcove is barren except for the skeleton standing in the center, and a three inch cylindrical hole in the floor just behind it. The shredded rope the group noticed earlier lays on the floor about six inches before heading down into the hole. As Draax enters the alcove, the skeleton 'speaks' again, clearly just being the source of a magic mouth spell. It states, "Beyond your reach when broken, within your reach made whole." Looking down into the hole, Draax sees that the hole leads down about a foot, and apparently opens into a larger, perhaps spherical cavity. The shredded rope leads down into this concealed microchamber, little more than wisps of hemp. It is attached to what appears to be an eight inch long lever, or handle, with a set of intricate little square holes in one end. Its made out of a lustrous black metal that seems chillingly familiar. It is clear that the rope will not bear the weight of the metal piece in its current state.

The third alcove is barren except for the skeleton, and a six inch wide cylindrical hole filled with darkness, obvious in the light of the sunrod. When Thelonius ventures near the edge of the alcove, the a magic mouth activates on the skeleton, saying again, "Oblivion, or Testing? Darkness conceals the differences."

In the fourth alcove, the last skeleton stands mutely, pointing its arm at the hole in the wall. Looking into the four inch hole, Thelonius sees that the hole is bored a good way back into the wall. About a foot in, there appears to be a three inch or so diameter pipe made out of some lustrous black metal that he is unfamiliar with. Its not that much smaller than the hole itself, and is smeared with a greasy off-white substance. Thelonius suspects poison for a moment, and then smells the unforgettable aroma of pork fat from the hole.

As Renik moves into the first alcove with his sunrod, he recognizes the pile as a crusted over mound of rotted sahuagin and sea elf flesh with choice bits of unidentifiable waste mixed in. Only the crust over the refuse confines what is likely a truly revolting stench. As Renik begins to go through it, Tratain considers the sign.

It occurs to Tratain, Setanos, and Arien at about the same time that the script isn't magical. (Spellcraft checks please.)

Kylean goes quietly back up the stairs to recheck the bards room.

Standing guard, Rond and Feng see and hear nothing in the way of threats. When Reniks sunrod flares into brilliance, both warriors see some sort of massive door about sixty feet down the north hallfway, its details indistinct at this range. The hallway north is otherwise empty, and devoid of obvious threat.

Arien  d20+18=36
Tuesday December 23rd, 2003 5:19:24 AM

Arien examines the script for a moment before moving further into the room. Looking around Arien murmurs to himself, "I hate these things..."

Renik  d20+9=20 d20+3=21
Tuesday December 23rd, 2003 6:17:01 AM

"OK, let us keep in mind that these puzzles are designed to test a wizard. Therefore we can assume that the solutions are likely to be magical in nature" deduces the rogue.

"Does that text mean anything to you, Arien? Or you Tratain or Setanos?" the rogue asks, backing away from the toxic heap (OOC: That 36 of Arien's was a Spellcraft check, right?). "I don't really want to mess with this until we have a better idea of what we're dealing with."

"Let's deal with the more straightforard puzzles first. Skelly 2's damaged rope almost certainly needs a Mending spell cast upon it before we can pull it properly. Skelly 3's darkened hole probably needs a Light spell cast inside it.

"This hole number 4 has got me curious" mutters Renik, walking over to join Thelonius. My first guess would be that we need to pull that pipe out of the hole, and that the fat it is smeared with is designed to make that job as difficult as possible. Again it would seem logical that we need to use a spell to move the pipe, but I can't think of one that would do the job. Any ideas, Spellcasters? Perhaps the pipe itself might give us some clue."

And he examines the pipe, the fat and the black metal carefully, tring to determine what the lustrous black metal might be (Search 20, Appraise 21).

Setanos (Extended Mage Armor)  d20+12=32
Tuesday December 23rd, 2003 7:15:37 AM

Setanos examines things as best as possible, trying to figure out this riddle. For not the first time in his life, he wishes he paid a little more attention to the non-martial parts of his training.

"Does anyone have skill n figguring out scripts?"

OOC: Spell Craft check 32.

Rond
Tuesday December 23rd, 2003 12:11:18 PM

"We probably cannot bypass these puzzles. The Sons are looking for people that can take care of themselves. They don't want everyday wimps coming into the organization. If the puzzle isn't lethal, we'll definitely not get anywhere without figuring it out."

Once Renik lights the sundrod Rond will point out the door that he sees.

Tratain [Shield of Faith; Endurence; Spell Immunity: Fireball, Lightning Bolt]  d20=11
Tuesday December 23rd, 2003 12:31:32 PM

Tratain examines the sign again then shakes his head. This is best left to people smarter than he is he thinks. He says "Well I have no idea what the sign means. Setanos? Arien? any luck?"

He continues "I think your right Renik, this must be just the first trial. The spells you suggest I think are the right ones, but they are all spells that any apprentice would know. I believe that the mage hand spell would help get with the fourth test there. Until we figure out what that sign says we can't even guess as to what spell we need for the first."

"I unless Setanos or Arien have those spells memorized today we're stuck waiting until tomorrow so that we can memorize them and come back. If we need I can do both the mending spell and the light spell, but the mage hand spell isn't something that I can cast."

Considerations - Dm Ian
Tuesday December 23rd, 2003 2:29:03 PM

(Sorry about the early post... much driving around california today. I will be back and able to post Thursday.)

Once the group starts talking about using apprentice level spells, all three arcane casters in the party come to the same realization at the same time. Comprehend Languages would allow the decoding of the sign, and is of the same power level as the other spells required here.

As the discussion goes back and forth in the party, Feng and Rond stand guard, and see no additional threats.

Rond has found no signs of any kind that this area has been disturbed in quite some time.

Renik then makes his way over to the fourth alcove, and sees the piece Thelonius described. It confirms his earlier suspicions about what the Sons are up to. The last time he saw this metal, it had been used to make the Soul Machine. If the Sons have been able to make or recover enough to use in this puzzle, who knows what end they have turned it to inside the school?

Draax
Tuesday December 23rd, 2003 9:09:06 PM

Since it seems that magic will play a big part in getting pass the puzzles, Draax moves away to stand guard or give help when needed.

Renik
Wednesday December 24th, 2003 5:47:42 AM

The rogue recounts his finding of the Soul Forge metal to his companions. "This bodes ill" he muses. "I shudder to think what the source of this metal might be, if it is indeed the same that was used to construct that fearsome engine. It would seem we face more than merely a school for dark wizards."

Well, it seems these puzzles can be bypassed with spells. It would also appear from Rond's findings that no-one has passed this way in some time. That being the case, if our spellcasters do not have the requisite spells memoried now, I suggest we postpone our advance until we have them in mind. I'm inclined to agree with Rond. Attempting to force our way through is likely to have dire consequences."

If it transpires that they do not have all the spels required, Renik suggests they return to the safety of the Inn whilst the mages prepare the required spells.

OOC: Happy holidays
Wednesday December 24th, 2003 3:12:29 PM

Happy holidays all. Skipping the post today for obvious reasons.

Tratain [Shield of Faith; Endurence; Spell Immunity: Fireball, Lightning Bolt]
Thursday December 25th, 2003 12:06:21 PM

Tratain says "Well I don't think we have all of the necessary spells at the moment so its back to the inn until we do. I can take care of the comprehend language spell, as well as any of the others except for the mage hand spell if needed. I think it best if we left now and not try and look any further until we can pass all the parts of this initial test."

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Discussion continues - Dm Ian
Friday December 26th, 2003 6:32:46 PM

The party continues discussing the puzzle, and whether to retreat and rememorize spells.

Feng
Friday December 26th, 2003 10:53:06 PM

ooc: sorry about my absence of late but x-mas and work have kept me occupied.

"I don't think there is a rush to solve this puzzle. We are in an empty inn. We can lock the doors and try again tomarrow."

Arien
Saturday December 27th, 2003 12:35:51 AM

"I can provide the mending and the light spells well enough but I don't have a spell yet that will translate those words, I suspect one of the clerics will be able to though. I'll need to memorize those spells though and the ones that I used in the fight upstairs as well so I vote for withdrawing for the moment and coming back fresh."

Setanos (Extended Mage Armor)
Monday December 29th, 2003 7:02:47 AM

Setanos nods at the parties decision, not really wanting to delay but not seeing any better choice.

Draax
Monday December 29th, 2003 11:20:15 AM

Draax agrees with the others, "I will stand first watch on the inn and especially the door while the spellcasters rest and change spells. I do not want to be surprised by unwanted guest."

A restful night - Dm Ian
Monday December 29th, 2003 5:44:38 PM

The group spends a quiet night in the rooms at the Silver Seagull Inn. The food the innkeeper left for you is tasty, and the beds clean and warm. The watch is uneventful, and in the morning, the casters awaken and prepare the needed spells.

At this point, the group moves back down the stairs, and comes to the puzzle-room, everything exactly as they left it.

Renik
Monday December 29th, 2003 5:58:20 PM

"Very well, my friends" smiles the rogue, drawing his shortswords. Let's see if we can pass these tests and gain access to the school itself."

Marking time - Dm Ian
Tuesday December 30th, 2003 5:35:22 PM

The party reassembles in the cavern, looking into the four adjacent hallways, and down the northbound corridor. Aside from the skeletons, who pose no perceptible threat, no other creatures can be seen.

Draax

Draax resumes his guardian role when the group returns downstairs.

Arien
Tuesday December 30th, 2003 9:36:09 PM

Arien goes to the alcove with the rope and casts mending upon it.

Feng
Tuesday December 30th, 2003 9:38:16 PM

Feng follows along wondering who knows how to solve this puzzle and they could find such a person.

Setanos (extended Mage armor)
Wednesday December 31st, 2003 7:29:12 AM

Setanos stands ready with his greatsword, braced incase the spells are not the ones we need and there's trouble.

Tratain
Wednesday December 31st, 2003 12:21:02 PM

Tratain moves to the first skeleton and casts comprehend languages and attempts to read the sign. After reading the sign unless it gives some clues he will cast light in an attempt to counter the Darkness spell hiding one of the holes.

Renik
Wednesday December 31st, 2003 1:33:50 PM

The rogue stands by, watching with interest to see if the spells they have decided upon have the desired effect. If needs be he will gently tug on the newly mended rope.

"So, who will cat Mage Hand on the final hole?" he asks.

Progress! - Dm Ian  d20=6
Wednesday December 31st, 2003 3:36:23 PM

Draax, Feng, Setanos and Rond stand guard, watching all directions and approaches.

Moving into the second alcove, Arien casts a mending spell on the frayed rope. The fibers of the rope slither back together, and a trial tug demonstrates that it now has enough strength to raise the eight inch lever from its resting place within. Renik then carefully withdraws the lever.

The lever is clearly some kind if handle. It has a blunted end with four small square holes punched through the piece at right angles. The other end is roughened to provide a clear handle. The whole thing is of the same shimmering black metal.

Tratain casts a comprehend languages spell on the sign, which immediately resolves into readable text.

"Beware the rot grubs in the refuse. Use heavy gloves."

Then, moving to the the third alcove, Tratain casts a light spell on the darkened hole. The darkness is dispelled, and within, he can see some sort of pipe valve mechanism. It has what appears to be a turning mechanism on one side with four raised square pegs, and it is made from the same shimmering blackish metal. It is also liberally smeared with some sort of bright blue gel. Tratain has never seen the gel before.

Renik
Thursday January 1st, 2004 2:18:38 PM

"Hmm" ponders the rogue as the next stage of the puzzle is revealed. "These handles both have four positional markers. I'm willing to bet the remaining two will again. Once we have access to all four I'd suggest turning each handle to a position corresponding the the alcove we found it in."

"Feng, you wear heavy gauntlets; would you mind reaching into that refuse and revealing the lever that should be inside?"

"Now, who's meant to be casting Mage Hand?"

Inching Along - Dm Ian
Thursday January 1st, 2004 6:37:19 PM

Renik can see that the lever the party has recovered, and the valve still remaining in the hole probably fit together, as one has raised square pegs, and the other has indentations of a similar size, shape and placement.

Click! - Dm Ian  d20+3=4 d20+6=7 d20+4=12
Friday January 2nd, 2004 8:13:14 PM

Feng goes into the first alcove, and with some distaste, manages to find a box shaped metal assembly made out of the same shimmering metal. In the act of pulling it out, he feels three separate fingerpoke-like impacts on his backs of his gauntlets.

Once the piece is pulled out and wiped clean, several of the party notice that it clearly could fit over the valve found earlier.

Renik retrieves the piece from the third alcove by carefully collecting the piece with a spare rag, and wiping it clean.

Tratain collects the pipe piece from the fourth alcove with the use of a mage hand spell. As it is pulled out, he finds that there is a circular hole in the center of the hold that has a lip on one side.

Renik, having already intuited that the pieces assemble, begins to put them together. At first hes a little stumped on how to make them lock together as a unit, but then Setanos sees how the lip on the pipe catches inside the valve, the bracket locks everything in place with tension, and the lever connects to the side of the valve.

So armed, the party moves down the northward hallway and finds a massive, valvelike door seemingly carved from the rock around it. As the characters examine it, Thelonius and Draax note that the sea sounds a bit closer here.

Looking at the door, it appears to be a circular portal about twelve feet in diameter. Running down the center of the portal is a shimmering black pipe exactly the same size as the pieces you found earlier. In the center of the door, about eye-level for most of the group, is a foot wide indentation with a missing section of pipe. Looking at the adjacent sections of pipe, they both have sleeve-like fittings that would probably slide over the pipe and valve assembly you have in your hands.

Rond hangs back, watching the rear of the party, seeing and hearing nothing out of the ordinary.
