Another few days pass, and members of the group find themselves submerged in tasks great and small, mundane and otherwise. Weaponry is cleaned or bought, the correct martial form is practiced, spells are discovered and learned, demons are chased into far corners of the mind.
Olyn attends to duties at the temple and does get to accompany the cleric dispatched to heal Avenor. The man's painful, physical wounds are healed. Mentally its another story, and grudges against the Prince of Thieves are being polished and honed. there's trouble brewing there.
Rose discovers that her aunt has quite a few tricks to teach her. The halfling community are worried about trade if the city's fragile peace is disrupted, although one particular entrepreneur - an inventor of assorted contraptions, reckons it could mean more work for him.
Geoffrey is very pleased with Theodore's progress, and lets the lad study amongst his books for as long as he likes.
Vauhwyt spends time on mystery business.
Vorelle stays close to home - honing her skills, losing herself in practice.
Lain no doubt has his own things to attend to.
Dietrich wanders the City, discovering more of its geography, and who lives where.
Zayne, Devlin and Dietrich, in between practicing their own skills - frequent the Blue Eel. The ale is good, the food is plain but wholesome, the bar maids are pretty and have a good sense of humour.
One morning - two halfling gentlemen enter the tavern. They have with them, a strange metal contraption on wheels, and over to the noticeboard they go. They position the machine alongside the board, give one another a nod, and get to work. One pastes a piece of paper with a glue-soaked brush, and then attaches the paper to a metal arm, sticking out of the machine. The other halfling cranks a handle, and WHACK!! The arms stretches forth and slaps the piece of paper against the notice board. WHACK! There goes another one. And another.
"It works!" cries the one with the paintbrush, and he starts to laugh. His fellow halfling joins in, and as soon as their job is done, they buy each other a pint at the bar.
In the next few minutes, some patrons get up to read the newly posted messages on the board.
Dietrich Tuesday January 20th, 2004 7:59:07 AM
Once again with his friends in the tavern, the fighter sees the two halflings and their strange machine. He was getting bored with the calm life and is very curious about the paper, so he stands up to read the messages. 'Hopefully something to do! My sword is almost rosting.'
Olyn Tuesday January 20th, 2004 8:35:11 AM
after a few days in the temple, and talking to the other, older clerics about the impending trouble that we all know will take place.
taking most of a day moving his belongings from the temple to the apartment Jeraldh has loaned the group, Olyn helps with the preparations of supper. allbeit in a somber mood.
at supper, with those who do show up, he starts the conversation with: I went with one of the healers to heal the man's wounds at the Wolf compound. and all his physical wounds were healed. stopping a moment to swallow a spoonful of food and after looking into the eyes of each person sitting at the table. we need to leave this city. and the sooner we do it the better. some feel there is a squabble fixin to happen here, it's gonna be more like a civil war. and personally, I have no desire to be in a city that erupts in a civil war. and being we are honorary members of the house of Wolf, we will undoubtedly be caught up in the middle of it eventually. I say we take all we have made up to now, including money saved. use it to buy passage on a caravan to another city, and restart there. we all know we have the fortitude for the adventurers' life, but if we stay here, that life might be shorter than most. and I for one don't wish to see any of my new family killed prematurely.
he then goes back to eating the rest of his supper in silence.

The last few days have been what the young ranger has needed, time to get way from the recent events. Able to just relax, and eat (as much as one can in DIrt City)
Enjoying the time at the Eel he doesn't spend too much time there. There are things to discover. Splitting his time between the apartment and trying to ferret out what he can about things that occurred while he has been absent from Dirt City using his contacts with the Cloaks.(Gather Information 14 OOC not about the information leak but for any other happenings)
AS the halfling machine does it's thing,Zayne's curiosity is arroused

Vauhwyt (and then Mookie!) Tuesday January 20th, 2004 4:38:51 PM
Part of Vauhwyt's "mystery" training, it turns out, is becoming a mage. After mastering the very basics, the liontaur buys certain herbs, burns them in a special fire, and then concentrates. She feels the scent from the incense drifting, and she feels compelled to follow it. It smells like fire ... and blood!
Vauhwyt wanders Dirt City, following the smell. Out into the air. Over to a tree. And there she sees ... Theodore!
It seems the same thing that drew Vauhwyt also brought Theodore to the same spot. For in the tree is a nest with two young ravens! One of them -- a boy -- hops out of the nest, flutters down to Vauhwyt's shoulder, and caws. Did the caw sound like "hi!"? In that moment a bond is formed.
When she can see straight again, Vauhwyt looks at the bird. "I'll call you Mookie, if that's okay."
The bird answers, "Sounds good to me, Boss!"
Vauhwut watches to see what happened with Theo.
[OOC: I cleared this event with Jan and Shegger before posting!]
Vorelle Tuesday January 20th, 2004 4:40:12 PM
Vorelle listens to Olyn's talk with a faraway look in her eyes. To leave Dirt City forever...could it really be possible? Leave the dirt, and the squalor, and the need to live underground? Leave the infighting, and the bullying, and the strong preying upon the weak?
She is so enthused by the prospect that she actually speaks. "Y-y-yes. L-let's l-l-leave."
Theodore Tuesday January 20th, 2004 10:43:43 PM
After performing the necessary rites, Theodore is lead to the same raven's nest as Vauhwyt. Unfortunately for him, his new found familiar isn't as excited by the appearance of his master and sits in his nest. Theodore is forced to climb the squat tree and grab the young bird.
Not being much of a climber to begin with, Theodore loses his grip and falls a few short feet to land with an ugly thud on his back, his right hand raised protectively above him with the raven safely clutched. He loosens his fingers and the black bird flutters to Theodore's chin and gives him a solid peck on the forehead.
Theodore yelps in pain and the raven hops about crying, "Macaw, macaw!" as if it were laughing. After a few minutes of rolling about in pain, Theodore recovers and gets to his feet. He picks up the raven and places him on his shoulder.
"I shall call you, Macaw," he says to his new friend. "Now, Macaw, I am your master. This means that you must do what I say." Macaw answers with a quick nip to Theodore's ear.
"Yow! Okay, okay. We'll figure that part out later..." Theodore smiles wanly and nods at Vauhwyt before returning to the apartments.
Theodore (continued) Tuesday January 20th, 2004 10:49:42 PM
Theodore and his new friend, Macaw, return to the apartments. Anyone there would notice a nice yellow bruise forming on Theodore's forehead.
At Rose's question about swapping spells, Theodore nods his head. "That sounds like a good idea to me. We should also ask Lain if he would be interested. Since he's going to be living with us, we might as well begin to trust each other."
If Lain is about, he approaches the other wizard with the idea. If accepted, Theodore will share the contents of his spellbook with both Rose and Lain.

((OOC - Sorry about this folks - just catching up. I got a note from Lain's player. He can't post for a couple of days - schoolwork.
I'll post first thing tomorrow morning.))
Devlin Wednesday January 21st, 2004 10:30:11 AM
Not really wanting to leave his mug of ale or his table, Devlin's curiousity finally gets the best of him and he rises to take a look at the paper put up by the halfling contraption. Hopefully there would be something worth the effort there.
(OOC: sorry for the lame post and missing yesterday. I was sick and still fighting it today)
DM Jan Wednesday January 21st, 2004 11:21:02 AM
On the Board:
Amongst the more mundane advertisements, including a wealthy member of the Teeth wanting a baby-sitter, and two halfling brothers wanting to sell some weird contraption called a "bi-cycle', are the following -
The Keys need 'athletic individuals' who can pose as a travelling circus for a clean op, way north of the city. Contact is Jeraldh, as it happens, the group's landlord.
The Knives need a team who know how to look after themselves, to help patrol certain tunnels where some mysterious murders have taken place. Ask at the Knives Tower.
The Teeth are looking for ships crew, for a clean smuggling op, offshore. Look for Captain Verlain at the docks.
The Wolves need guards for a "caravan" going north.
Zayne discovers a few hush hush things, over in the Cloaks quarter. (Dave, I'll email you.)
The lively, gregarious ravens 'acquired' by Vauhwyt and Theodore prove to be quite a handful.
Dietrich Wednesday January 21st, 2004 12:42:08 PM
Dietrich is exited with the new working opportunities, particularly that with Jeraldh, and wants to know more details about all of them, exept the caravan thing for the wolves. He really thinks itīs better to stay away from them for a while. After finishing his meal and ale, he returns to the appartment and sees some strange changes there. Two speaking ravens, Rose and Vauhwyt doing these weird wizard things and speaking lotīs of not understandable arcane stuff. But the fighter has no time for wondering, as Olyn makes his speech. Dietrich has no special bounds to the city and is willing to go everywhere he can get a good fight, gold and glory. He votes for asking the exact conditions of both jobs and then to decide for one of them, though it would be probably more interesting to work with Jeraldh.
Zayne Wednesday January 21st, 2004 12:54:17 PM
Looking the options over he decides that the whole group should talk over the choices and possibilities.
"What say we go back to the apartment to talk things over with everybody?"
Theodore and Macaw Wednesday January 21st, 2004 1:30:52 PM
Theodore's eyes widen when Dietrich mentions the job as a ships crew. "That's fantastic! I've always wanted to go on a ship. I'll bet that job will take us far from here and we can all see what the world is like outside of Dirt City."
Macaw bobs his head rapidly as Theodore's enthusiasm catches hold. "To sea! To sea!" he calls.
Vorelle Wednesday January 21st, 2004 2:58:28 PM
When the options are laid out, Vorelle doesn't display a lot of excitement about any of them. She listens intently to the conversation of the others.
Vauhwyt and Mookie d20+6=20 Wednesday January 21st, 2004 3:26:17 PM
Vauhwyt returns with Theo and listens eagerly to all the options.
She agrees that the Wolf job is better left alone for now.
She is not happy about the boat job -- "I can't swim," she complains, "and I hate getting wet! Waterr!!" She shudders.
Vauhwyt does like the circus job, a lot!
"With Prestidigitation, Rose and Theodore and Lain could do magic tricks! Or if you know the True Strike spell, you could be knife throwers!"
"With the ravens and maybe other familiars, we could do an animal act!" Mookie caws, "I do killer stand-up!"
"With a spell from me, Dietrich or one of you fighters could be a Giant Weight Lifter!"
"Zayne and Devlin would make great clowns!"
"The rest of us, like Olyn and Vorelle, could gather info during performances!"
In her enthusiasm, Vauhwyt says, "Watch me!" as she tries to stand on her head! [OOC: rolled a Tumble Check of 20, so maybe she made it!]
"Come on, it would be fun! Everybody loves the circus!" she says while upside down.
Olyn Wednesday January 21st, 2004 3:48:04 PM
smiling for the first time in many days, he gets up and walks over to where Wyt is standing on her head. pushing her over with a loud CRASH he turns.
let us talk with Jeraldh and see what it is they are looking for. perhaps it would be the right job for us right now. making others laugh and at the same time helping to heal our spiritual wounds.
sitting back at the table and finishing the crumbs on his dinner plate he looks up.
I will go and speak to him after supper time. give him time to get his boys full and quieted down.
Devlin Wednesday January 21st, 2004 4:33:17 PM
Devlin frowns as the conversation turns toward the circus act. "I'll be no clown nor do I seek to provide comic relief, but every circus needs a good guard. That will suit me just fine."
Rose Wednesday January 21st, 2004 9:42:49 PM
Rose is looking worried over imminent eruption of violence in the city. "The circus sounds ok, I guess. Has anybody heard of any other jobs? I'm going to check around with my family to see if they know of anything."
Rose stays out of the way when Vauhwyt tries a head stand. I liontaur doing a head stand? I had better stay back so I don't get squished.
DM Jan Thursday January 22nd, 2004 12:58:02 AM
Information so far -
Rose's family are aware of no other tasks apart from the ones advertised at the Blue Eel, and maybe a couple of market traders jobs - one selling pots and pans, the other pots of flowers.
Jeraldh tells Olyn that if the group are really interested, to let him know first thing in the morning, and they'd take it from there.
"The Keys would provide costumes, and you'd have to be convincing. We're going after a silk merchant, on his way to New Elenna. It should be a good haul. We've hit him before in another guise. He uses kids to weave the finest silk cloth you've ever seen. Seems to me some of his revenue can help our kids down here with their schooling. We'll get a good price from the Teeth for it. They'll export it to New Elenna - where it was going in the first place. Let me know - yes or no, tomorrow."
Vauhwyt and Mookie Thursday January 22nd, 2004 5:55:14 AM
Vauhwyt is sorry she insulted Devlin. "You would make a great guard!"
She thinks a bit and adds, "We'll need a ringmaster! The person who runs the show! How about Olyn or Zayne for that?"
When she hears what Jeraldh has to say, she asks him if those silk-worker kids are forced to labor or do so willingly. At the idea that they have no choice, her hackles rise and her tail starts to swish back and forth fiercely.
Mookie sees this and says, "Now calm down, Boss. You don't know what's going on yet. Maybe those kids earn good money for their families."
Vauhwyt says, "Maybe."
"Anyway, I say go for it! Let's be a circus!"
Dietrich Thursday January 22nd, 2004 9:13:04 AM
Dietrich listens to the others and imagine his friends as a circus and he himself as Giant Weight Lifter. In someway itīs attracting, but it doesnīt really fit for a professional soldier like him. He smiles at Vauhwytīs enthusiasm and head stand and finally says:
"I think we should ask for more detailed information on all jobs before we choose. How much do they pay? Which risks would we run? What political implications would our actions have? As Vauhwyt doesnīt like water we should forget the thing we the Teeth, but Iīve liked the job for the Knives. We should consider it too."
Olyn Thursday January 22nd, 2004 9:39:28 AM
after returning from Jeraldh's manor, and listening to the others.
I have a question for you all.
where is it written that we have to do anything that involves stealing? why can't we just leave, and make a fresh start of things. I know Wardd is suppose to be the God of thieves, but he isn't just that. He's the God of Luck. why does everyone assume since he deals with random luck, that he's for Thievery. sometimes I think he gets a bad rap.
my vote is to leave this city of Thieves. to make an Honest living. let us travel to Plateau City, go to the Adventurer's Square, and look for work there. i'm ready to discover lost temples, save damsels in distress, rid a dungeon of unwanted guests, and in the end, if Wardd willing I am still alive, buy a small farm near my ancestors homeland in the woods, raise a small family, and die with many grandchildren mourning me.
Devlin Thursday January 22nd, 2004 1:47:50 PM
"I don't really care either way. As long as the pay is good and there is a chance for adventure, I'm in. It's time we made a name for ourselves in these parts." The young swashbuckler gives his companions a warm smile as a brief twinkle appears in his eyes.
Theodore and Macaw Thursday January 22nd, 2004 2:54:39 PM
"I agree with Olyn," says Theodore. "Even if the silk merchant isn't a nice guy, I can't condone stealing from him. And I too would like to go beyond the city. I want to see what all is out there. I'm tired of living in the earth."
Macaw hops from Theodore's shoulder to a table and begins to strut up and down, calling out, "Gotta fly! Gotta fly!"
Zayne Thursday January 22nd, 2004 3:20:19 PM
Zayne looks at everyone then shakes his head as if he were dissapointed,"Have you all gone mad? Innocent people are being KILLED,and you want to go romping around in a circus. I can't believe what I'm hearing. I've heard talk of making a difference and I can think of no greater difference than saving lives. I don't know about the rest of you but I'm going to the Keyes in the morning. You can go be clowns if you wish but I'm going to do the right thing. If anyone needs me I'll be arouynd the merchant's quarter I need to think about some things."
rose Thursday January 22nd, 2004 5:54:00 PM
ooc: zayne the keys are the circus, the knives are the murders. and have you checked your email, what jobs did jan say zayne find.
[b]"I agree, I don't want to do a bunch of stealing.....although it would be nice if we could keep some of the silk. But we can always buy silk. As far as leaving the city permanently goes, I have family here and would prefer to be based from here. or if we later decide to go somewhere else visit as much as possible.
Vorelle Thursday January 22nd, 2004 8:52:26 PM
Vorelle doesn't contribute much to the conversation, but on one point she won't be moved. "I d-d-don't w-want to st-st-st-steal."
rose Friday January 23rd, 2004 12:36:07 AM
Rose finally notices the ravens. "Who's birds are those?"
When she hears the ravens talk "A talking bird, I want one! Where can I get one?"
Devlin Friday January 23rd, 2004 10:48:03 AM
"Stealing is such a relative term," Devlin says with a deep sigh as he listens to the discussion. "I'm not a native to this city so I don't care much either way about the civil strife going on between the houses. Do I want to see innocents hurt, no, of course not but neither do I care if the two houses kill themselves in the process. If there is coin to be made, I'm for it, I'll work both sides of the fence if need be."
The young fighter then gives a broad smile and says, "I just want a little joy, a large amount of pleasure, and a swift death once I lose the appetite for either. That's my motto."
DM Jan Friday January 23rd, 2004 12:34:20 PM
More Info:
On his foray into the Merchants Quarter, Zayne overhears hushed chatter about the mysterious deaths. A lantern lighter, found in the early hours of the morning in the Garotte Sewer - sucked dry to the point of being unrecognisable. It was only his clothes, ring and paraphenalia that identified him for who he was. Another one over in the Prince's Sewer. A member of the Cloaks by the looks of it, who was obviously up to no good, because no one will step up and identify him. And now one of the trader's wives has gone missing. She was visiting a relative in the Halfling Quarter...
((OOC - folks, by all means continue your discussion. Post as you want to over the weekend and Monday, as often as you like. I encourage you to put as much of your OOC email thoughts into your character posts where possible. I'd like to try and get a general decision from you, on which way you want to go, early next week?))
Theodore and Macaw Friday January 23rd, 2004 1:29:30 PM
Theodore scrubs at his head as everyone voices their opinion. "Well it appears the circus is out of the question. Too many of us would have a problem with stealing. That leaves us with two options, in my estimation."
He puts up two fingers. "The first is to take the job with the Knives and look into these odd killings. Zayne seems very adamant about pursuing that course." He folds down his middle finger. "And the second option is to leave the City in search for adventure elsewhere. Both Olyn and I would prefer this option. Vorelle has expressed favor in leaving as well. And that is not to say that we won't return. Dirt City is my home, all of our homes."
"Now, I think we had best come to a consensus on what we ALL should do. The last thing we need is for the team to be splitting up. Personally, I don't mind sticking around for a bit so that we can look into the murders. Sooner or later, I want to go beyond this city, though. And I would like it very much if my friends came, too."

Rose looks thoughtful "I would like to look into the murders also, they sound very strange. As far as leaving the city, I dont mind being based out of another place. But I would like to be able to visit my family.
Dietrich Saturday January 24th, 2004 8:27:31 AM
The soldiers patience is getting short with the infinite debate. He is used to objective plans and orders and he start to tipp with his fingers and to show other signs of inpatience. Eventually he says:
"So, I vote to do that job for the Knives and get some gold and good connections to that house. Iīm not so eager to live the city, specially with no specific goal and without earning anything. But I would do it if thatīs the will of the group. Just decide it!"
Vauhwyt and Mookie Saturday January 24th, 2004 2:53:49 PM
Hearing Zayne and the general drift of the conversation, Vauhwyt nods. "Yes, it would be more worthy to look into the mysterious murders. I guess I was just too caught up in how much fun the circus would have been."
She smiles. "But let us do the right thing and go see the Knives."
rose Saturday January 24th, 2004 5:24:45 PM "Vauhwyt, when are you going to answer my question about where to get a talking bird?
Olyn Saturday January 24th, 2004 10:17:42 PM
I agree, let us try and solve these murders. who knows, maybe instead of diplomacy, we'll become investigators.
rose Saturday January 24th, 2004 11:07:30 PM
Rose sits thinking for a bit about the murders and other stuff, while she is thinking she is also knitting. Suddenly she speaks up. "I know we have a group fund for food, but we should also have one for things like healing wands and stuff. I know Olyn is the only person who can use them, but he uses them on everybody not just himself. There are eight of us and a Cure Light Wounds Wand costs about 800g maybe a bit less. I say we should each chip in 100g for a wand.
ooc: I love weekend posting :)
got number of people in group from adventurer's repose. and cost of wand as 750g from 3.5 srd (rose didnt know exact price)
Vorelle Sunday January 25th, 2004 4:32:54 PM
Vorelle is feeling a little ashamed of herself. Heroes don't run away, after all.
"I-I'd ag-g-gree to h-h-helping the Kn-Kn-Kn-Knives," she says.
Mookie Monday January 26th, 2004 12:02:36 AM
Vauhwyt's familiar (a raven) answers Rose's question about gaining a familiar ...
"Hey cutie," the raven says to Rose, "I have a couple sisters back at the nest that would love to work with you! Come on, I'll take you there!"
Mookie pauses to see if that's okay with his master, and she gives her permission.
rose Monday January 26th, 2004 1:37:37 AM
Rose hurries after mookie "What's your name? What are your sister's like? Hey! slow down!
Mookie Monday January 26th, 2004 5:06:38 AM
"Don't you remember me from the Scarlet Tapestry, cutie? My name is Mookie. My sisters don't have names yet -- our kind doesn't go in for names unless we bond with a mage."
[OOC: As a first level mage, Rose knows what to do to bond a familiar. Per the PHB, it requires 24 hours and 100 gp worth of magical materials.]
Dietrich Monday January 26th, 2004 7:20:20 AM
The fighter is satisfied with the groupīs decision and says: "Letīs go to the Knives then!"
Although he is saving money, he agrees with the idea of buying the healing wand, "Whatever this is!"
Also, noticing that the appartement needs some furniture, Dietrich goes out to buy a simple bed and a chest for his personal stuff. He should be pretty satisfied with that simple 'barracks outlook' of their place.
Theodore and Macaw Monday January 26th, 2004 12:08:02 PM
As the group seems to be coming together in agreement over pursuing the Knives' case, Theodore nods his head. "So, we go to the Knives, then."
Theodore's raven, still standing on the table, cocks an appraising eye at his master. "Goofus! Goofus! Macaw, macaw."
Devlin Monday January 26th, 2004 3:20:44 PM
As the group comes to a consensus on their next course, Devlin finally speaks up and offers his final thoughts. "As long as we go with the understanding that we are just here to listen to the offer of the Knives. If we don't like the offer, we don't take the job, regardless of anything else. Agreed?"
DM Jan Monday January 26th, 2004 8:20:56 PM
Still investigating various options open to the group -
When asked, those at the Knives Tower will look at one another for a moment, hesitate and then say - "Look, we want to be honest here. You're the only people who have asked about it. Our own sewer patrols are starting to make excuses, and no one else wants to get involved. All the Houses are turning a blind eye, or blaming one another, and in truth - we really don't know what we are up against. "If you want to know more about the finer points of whats been happening - look for Mattison, who's gone down to the Halfling Sewer. Can't miss him - he's a half elf with a limp, and a half elf will be pretty tall compared to the rest of folks down that way."
They look as though they're half expecting the group to just turn, walk away, and wash their hands of it all.
"Anything you'd like to ask us?"
Rose Monday January 26th, 2004 8:26:48 PM
Rose goes to the nest and finds one of the ravens that's smaller than the other and getting picked on. She rescues it and befriends it takes it home and makes it her familiar.
Rose comes out later that day "Everybody this is Piper"
ooc: per jan I bonded with piper on one of the empty days before we began discussing jobs.
Vauhwyt and Mookie Monday January 26th, 2004 9:27:08 PM
Vauhwyt and Mookie are both glad to see Rose with Piper. Mookie thanks her for picking the smallest fledgling of the nest. "Without her big brother to take care of her," Mookie says, "I was worried. Thank-you, cutie," he says to Rose.
At the House of Knives, Vauhwyt intorduces herself and says that she is willing to look up this half-elf. But she also wants to know what the Knives are paying for the job. And what's the name of the Knife they are talking to?
"And how big are these sewers? Can a person my size fit? How about an even larger person? Are there any parts where the water is very deep? How deep? Do the sewers empty into the ocean? Could anything be getting into the system that way?"
rose Tuesday January 27th, 2004 12:06:43 AM I have a question, are we actually going to be IN the sewer or patrolling a hall the pipes run through? Rose looks very disgusted at the idea of being in the sewage.
rose Tuesday January 27th, 2004 12:08:02 AM
Before we went to see the Knives.
Rose hands olyn 100g "heres part of the cost of a cure wand. She then glares at the others until they share the cost.
Olyn Tuesday January 27th, 2004 12:54:08 AM
** before going to the knives **
looking at the money offered to him by Rose.
thank you for the offer, Rose, but at the moment no compensation is required. if you insist, then give it to Theo. let him become the group treasurer. and when we need stuff next time for the group, we can go to him and make a draw.
** at the Knives **
I do have a few questions: what is it about these murders that has the houses turning a blind eye. what is it about the people found dead or missing that would assume a connection. is there a connection. was there anything left at the scene of these crimes that you havent made public knowledge, something the killer or killers may have left as a sign of sorts. is this Half Elf the only one who has more knowledge on these happenings. and lastly, under what authority do we have, and do we have the right as investigators of the House to question other members if and when we see fit.

Dietrich Tuesday January 27th, 2004 7:57:53 AM
Dietrich is amazed with the proliferation of speaking birds in the group. He greets the newcomer Piper and then imagines the mess their appartment will be with nine people and four flying speaking companions... It also remembers him to take care of his mule.
He pays the 100 gp to Theo and asks: "Friends, if we are in no special need for money Iīd like to ask the group for a lend of 200 gp to buy a better bow. It would considerably increase our firepower and Iīd pay back in the first possibility."
When they are by the Knives, he listens to all questions and waits for the answers. If they are going to do the job, he would like to have a map of the area under investigation.
Zayne Tuesday January 27th, 2004 1:01:14 PM
(Before going to the knives)
Taking all the information he has been gathering since his return he begins to jot down all his findings to see if they are in any way connected.
It's obvious to the young ranger that he can't put this puzzle together alone so he informs the rest of the group about everything he has learned.
(OOC I will send you all an e-mail with everything)
Devlin Tuesday January 27th, 2004 4:52:35 PM
With all the strange, talking ravens hanging around the group now, Devlin finds the apartment all the more stifling and confining. He does his best to pay them no mind, finding the whole thing way too weird for his tastes. When asked, he offers up the 100 gp for the cure wand and hands it to Theo.
Once at the Knives, the fighter just sits back and listens to the barage of questions thrown the way of the group. He nods his head as Vauhwyt asks about compensation and does his best to listen for a response. He also shows interest in Rose's questions about the sewer itself and shares her desire to not actually travel in the refuse.
As it is, he remains quiet as the others question the man and simply waits on his response.
Theodore and Macaw Tuesday January 27th, 2004 9:24:47 PM
Theodore is surprised by the sudden title of treasurer bestowed upon him by Olyn. Then Rose, Dietrich, and Devlin are offering him money to hold onto. The mage can't refuse and stows the money in one of his desk drawers, not having anywhere else to put it save in his own purse. He does, however, scribble down who has contributed and how much and slides that in the same drawer.
At the Knives' tower, Theodore stands by silently. He has no other questions than those already asked.
Instead, he scratches Macaw on his head. The raven doesn't seem to appreciate the attention and nips Theodore's finger, drawing a thin line of blood.
Theodore sucks on his hurt finger, and nurses his pride as the guards answer the questions.
Vorelle Tuesday January 27th, 2004 10:11:54 PM
Vorelle also puts 100 gold into the party fund. Some time later she shyly puts a heavy bundle on the table next to Dietrich. It proves to contain 200 gold.
At some point, she goes to the market and purchases a second handaxe for herself.
At first, she is easily startled by all the noise the birds make, but she soon grows accustomed to it.
Lain Wednesday January 28th, 2004 12:23:02 AM
Lain had been roaming the lower and higher plates of Dirt city. He had soaked in the dark energies of the area, it sicken him to the least bit. His familiar had come to him during his time away. It was a owl, white and brown feathers, with occassional spots of black feathers.
Lain moved towards the Knives Tower, stopping at the doorway. His gaze came upon the others, he stopped behind the other that had arrived atthe tower before him.
DM Jan Wednesday January 28th, 2004 12:38:51 AM
"Oh," says the rather doughty-looking dwarf with a very long, red beard at the Knives Tower. "My name is Orgar. Sorry my manners are a bit thin. It's been a long shift."
Orgar goes on to answer any questions that he can.
The first one he delivers with a sigh. "The pay... is nothing right now. We were hoping that the other Houses would just pitch in and help out, but it seems they all have more pressing business." He shrugs. "Right now there's nothing to suspect that a journey into the actual sewer is on the cards. The bodies were found in the main 'street sewer' tunnels. I didn't see them, but apparently they aren't pretty. Mattison could tell you more. He could tell you more about the locations, too - and anything that might connect them together."
"All I can do is guess at the politics of why folk aren't roaming the sewer tunnels in droves, trying to find out whats going on. Obviously there's no money in it. Scary stories have probably frightened some of them off, and I suppose everyone is watching their backs after what happened in the Arena a few days ago. I mean who cares about a few people turning up dead, eh?" He snorts in disgust. "No respect for life in this town. None whatsoever. But you mark my words - if this goes unchecked, who knows what could happen. Thank Wardd there are those who care, but we're few and far between."
The group get the impression that Orgar could rant on about this particular subject for quite a while.
Zayne remembers nothing was said about this over at the Cloaks section. More pressing business... obviously.
rose Wednesday January 28th, 2004 1:58:46 AM
Rose talks to her friends away from any who can hear. "I know there's no money involved, but I say we should take this job and find out what's going on.
Later or earlier rose speaks to Vauhwyt. "Vauhwyt, you worked at the catacombs right? Could you find out how much some perches for the birds would cost, ones that have sand or paper under them to make it easier cleaning.
ooc: for the wizards in the party who want to exchange spells could you list your 1st level spells in your next post? rose's are: color spray, mage armor, magic missile, shield, unseen servant, and barnum's appraisal.
Dietrich Wednesday January 28th, 2004 7:24:27 AM
Dietrich is grateful for Vorelleīs help and thanks her with a smile and a nod. He instinctively moves his hand to give her a claps on the shoulder, but then draw it back, regarding Vorelleīs shyness.
"Thank you Vorelle. Iīll pay back as soon as I can. Besides, Iīm going to buy a composite long-bow. Would you like to help me choose a good one?" When the party isnīt by the Knives, Dietrich goes to the catacombs to buy the new weapon.
Concerning the murders...
Standing by the Knives, he sees Lain coming and thinks silently: 'Another bird! This wizards are all crazy."
The fighter isnīt happy at all that they wonīt get any pay for the task. After all, itīs risky and time consuming.
After Rose, he says:
"Though I find it absurd that nobody is willing to pay for the solution of this murders, I agree with Rose. We are doing nothing anyway and we are not so short of money too. Also, I think itīs good to get friends in the House of Knives."
Olyn Wednesday January 28th, 2004 8:46:04 AM
well met Orgar, my name is Olyn and this is Vauhwyt, Vorelle, Rose, Devlin, Lain, Theo, Zayne, and Dietrich.
murders in our town should be dealth with by the Prince <looks sourly> but being he seems to not be doing anything, it falls upon those of the citizens to make it safe for our children to play safely in the streets. payment is not something I am thinking about at the moment. although in all things compensation, be it financial or notoriety, will occur. what I am thinking about is how can we <motioning to himself and the others> help solve this problem as soon as possible.
I thank you for your time and cander Orgar, it seems you are one of the few who wish for some semblance of goodness to prevail in the city. we will do our best in providing a speedy end to this foul deed.
*turning to the others*
let us make haste to this Half Elf, and get what information he might pass on. perhaps those of you who gather information so well could start that process too. the rest of us will go see this Half Elf. let us meet back at the apartment in say: 2 hours and compare notes as to what we find up to then, then we can formulate a plan of action and go from there.
*turning to the fighters*
soon my bloodthirsty friends your swords will drink blood, but until then be patient. not everything in this world can be solved through violent means.

Vauhwyt and Mookie Wednesday January 28th, 2004 3:42:41 PM
Vauhwyt's face falls when she hears they are to risk life and limb on a job no one else wants and get paid nothing. But then she thinks it over and laughs.
"Ha! Well, let us start as adventurers of the first orderr, seeking excitement for its own sake, and doing good deeds along the way! Yo, ho! An adventurer's life for me!"
"Fear not, friend Orgarr! We are just the sort of folks for the job!"
Mookie adds, "Yeah, suckers!"
"Hush Mookie!" Vauhwyt says. "Come, let us seek out this Mattison in the Halfling Sewerr."
Devlin d20+3=17 d20+3=19 d20+3=18 Wednesday January 28th, 2004 4:14:01 PM
Devlin's face shows his obvious concern about the job not paying anything and then he readily displays his disapproval at taking the job. Seeing all his companions eagerly ready to take on the task, he shakes his head in frustration but can only mumble, "Kids these days..."
When Zayne offers to go about the city with him, he nods his head and heads out with the man. His hand rests uncomfortably on the hilt of his rapier as they patrol the city for information. The peace bond itself made him all the more uncomfortable but he never liked having to draw the weapon when no money was involved. He didn't like people to die for nothing.

Vorelle Wednesday January 28th, 2004 8:45:54 PM
Vorelle is no mercenary but she, too, is concerned that the job doesn't pay anything. Helping people is good, but having enough money to live on is good, too. She's experienced firsthand what happens when you don't.
Nevertheless, she's willing to undertake the job and gladly follows the others to the Halfling Sewer.

Orgar thanks the group for getting involved. "Mattison will be able to tell you more, and if there's proff that one of the other Houses are doing something underhand, well - THEN we can get the Prince involved. If you're splitting up - I suggest someone goes to the mortuary at Wardd's temple, and then there's the Crescent Moon Market and the Trade Quarter."
Olyn, Vauhwyt, Dietrich, Rose, Theodore and Vorelle head off to find the half elf called Mattison.
Zayne and Devlin split off, intent on investigating elsewhere. ((Guys let me know where you'd like to go first? I'll let you keep those rolls for your first destination.))
Lain stays put, near the Knives Tower. His owl follows the other birds, who - along with their human, liontaur and halfling counterparts - are off to the Halfling Quarter.
Mattison, or at least it could well be Mattison - is stood with a small crowd of chattering halflings, just beyond the junction of the Halfling Sewer and the Trade Quarter tunnel. The reason for the crowd becomes obvious as the group approach, for in a small alcove, is what looks like a shrivelled up person - hunched over, with yellowed skin. The eyes have long gone. The birds become restless, and in the case of the ravens - raucous, too. Death has visited this place. Lain gets a feeling of revulsion enter his head, quickly replaced by hunger for carrion.
It's a terrible sight, and from whatever tales Rose has been told as a child, there is nothing to match this. This is obviously new, and well beyond the scope of your average scary story teller.
Olyn Thursday January 29th, 2004 12:19:43 PM
Wyt, go see what you guys can learn from the Half Elf, I on the other hand have work to do.

Vauhwyt and Mookie d20+3=15 Thursday January 29th, 2004 12:57:37 PM
Respectful of Olyn's religion, Vauhwyt still wishes he would talk to the crowd. She feels a little uncomfortable with all these short folk. "Brings back bad memories," she says very softly.
Then she springs into action. She urges everyone to step back from the body. "Please, friends," she says, "let this good priest do what needs to be done." She uses her size to gently urge the onlookers to back off.
As she clears a space, she also calls out, "If any of you shorter folk actually saw something, or if you have any information, please step over there and talk with Rose."
"Rose," the liontaur says more softly, "please see if any of these people have any information for us." Vauhwyt hopes that the halflings will feel more free to talk to one of their own stature.
"And you, sirr, must be Mattison. Orgar sent us to talk with you. Please step over there and chat with my comrades while Olyn offers a prayer for the victim's soul." She points out Dietrich, Theodore, and Vorelle.

When Dietrich is going to the Halfling Sewer he unconsciously relaxes a litle. The small, friendly looking hobbits around disarm the big fighter and remember him on childre. But then he suddenly awakes from his day-dreaming with the ugly sight of the mutilated corps. "Himmelherrgottnochmal!" he swears in his local tongue.
As Olyn and Vauhwyt begins to move, Dietrich helps them to make people step back using his sheer size.
Actually he hoped someone else would talk with this Mattison, as heīs not particulartly fitted for that, but, so what...
"Greetings master Mattison. We are friends of the house of Knives and would like to offer our help to solve this horrible murders. As my leonine friend said, Orgar recomended you to us. My name is Dietrich the Bear of the Windbourne Hills (offering Mattison his right hand) and this are the holy priest of Wardd Olyn, Vauhwyt, Rose, member of one of the most traditional halfling families of this City, Vorelle and Theodore, apprentice of the great Geoffrey. Theodore greets Mattison as he is introduced by Dietrich. "Excuse me, please," he says and moves towards the corpse. The young man stops and looks upon the scene with a blank face. Behind his eyes, one might notice several conflicting thoughts struggling to the surface.
"Food! Food!" cries out Macaw as the bird notes the body. "Hush, bird!" Theodore says in a commanding voice. The raven says nothing further, but bobs his head in frustration.
Clearing his throat, Theodore mutters a simple incantation and focuses his powers on the corpse. (Detect magic for any magical residue. If he detects magic, he'll continue to focus on the aura until he discovers its strength and school of magic, spellcraft check = 18)

DM Jan Friday January 30th, 2004 12:33:13 AM
In the Halfing Sewer Tunnel -
The group wade into the fray. Folk back off in respect of Olyn's intention to pray over the dead body, and they give him some space.
Vauhwyt attempts some crowd control and is successful, sort of, and the horde of halflings head toward Rose.
Mattison is indeed a half elf, stands around 5ft 10", and looks fairly young, although its impossible to be sure with half elves. He has a narrow but muscular frame, which favours his left side, and his left leg seems slightly shorter than the other. Long blond hair tied back with a piece of leather, blue eyes, fairly ordiinary clothes complete the picture. He seems startled by the appearance of the group, Vauhwyt in particular, and seems on the verge of asking her something when he's directed over toward some of the others. Something about the liontaur makes him move toward Dietrich.
However, when faced with the tall warrior's countenance, and fearsome delivery of the groups introduction, any further words escape him, except for a timid squeak - which could have meant "oh", or "hello" or anything else for that matter.
Rose does her best, but finds herself surrounded. The other halflings have obviously got the impression she's someone in authority and knows whats going on, and so right now she finds her own questions drowned out by their own. Everything from whats the Prince going to do about this, to fears that this might affect trade etc etc.
Over at the body, Theo uses his skill to determine if magic has had a hand in the killing. There's nothing. Not a whisker, or hint that magic has ever tainted this person, and he's pretty sure of his assessment. Vorelle uses her skills and - although there are no footprints, there appear to be two 8" long, roughly scraped gouges into the wall of the alcove, at about the height of her own head. As for the body itself, there appears to be a hole in its chest.
All the birds look on. Lain waits it out at the Knives Tower.
Meanwhile, over at the Crescent Moon Market -
Devlin and Zayne do some investigating. They find an amazing difference of opinion and knowledge. Some don't know whats going on. Some have heard something and have reached their own conclusions which, naturally involve some kind of plot between the Wolves and the Prince. Then, Zayne gets talking to a jeweller, who looks at him knowingly and whispers - "This has been going on for months. Few people went missing from this very market a while back. No explanation. Then it stopped."
While Zayne is talking to the jeweller, Devlin spots two things -
1) What looks like a mosquito has alighted onto Zayne's cheek, and his friend seems unaware of it. 2) A weird-looking, gangly-limbed guy is creeping up on them both.

He also takes a closer look on the corps and starts reasoning. At last, he talks to his friend:
"Friends, I think we should do our investigations in a more methodical way. We have to: 1)find out what this victims had in common, and If they actually had something in common. So, 2) Iīd suggest that we first gather all information together about all victims, who they were, what they did, where they were etc., so that we can find out what possible reason lies behind this killings. 3) For that we could split the group in pairs, each one to cover one victim, and then meet again in the appartement and discuss. 4)Itīs better not to move and investigate 'en masse' anyway, as it would call attention to us and makes the murderer carefully"
Vauhwyt and Mookie d20+15=16 Friday January 30th, 2004 9:29:19 AM
Vauhwyt gets a little annoyed at the way the halflings are overwhelming Rose. Her tail starts twitching from side to side. She decides that someone has to put some order into this mob.
She steps closer, looming over the small folk. Her grimace shows the teeth of a carnivore. "Look herre, you lot! We need help, not a lot of mindless questions! Stop your nonsense and listen to Rose! Talk one at a time! If there are witnesses, step forward! Whoever found this poor victim, step forward! You have forgotten the faces of your fathers! We want to stop this killerr, so calm down and be helpful! Or I'll calm you down!"
Vauhwyt doesn't know what she means by "I'll calm you down," but it sounds vaguely threatening without being grisly, so she hopes it will get these folks in line.

"I don't sense any magic on him," observes Theodore. He breathes heavily, still not able to take his eyes away from the desecrated body. "Who could have done such a thing?"
He lightly steps back to give the others room to search the body. Seeing Rose in a fix, Theodore decides to add his presence within the halfling crowd, hoping two people might have a better chance to calm the folks than one.
