Rond
Monday January 5th, 2004 12:27:38 AM

Rond continues to provide eyes and ears for dangers as many of the party are engaged on solving the current puzzle.

Tratain [Shield of Faith; Endurence; Spell Immunity: Fireball, Lightning Bolt]
Monday January 5th, 2004 2:29:59 PM

Tratain casts Shield of Faith, Endurence and Spell Immunity on himself before Renik inserts the assembled items into the door mechanism.

He says "I wonder what we'll find on the other side, and I hope we can get those pieces back out after we're through in there. I don't want to leave them if we can help it."

Down the rabbit hole - Dm Ian
Monday January 5th, 2004 7:02:05 PM

Holding back the pipe sleeves on the door, the valve assembly slips in to the indentation in the door, and locks in place with an unexpected click. Then, Renik slides the pipe sleeves into place, which also lock with a click, and eyes the lever for a moment.

Then, pulling the lever, there is an fairly loud rushing sound of water flowing at a furious rate through the pipe, and the valve-door begins to rotate open ponderously. As it does so, Renik and Draax (being the furthest forward), see a strange sight.

The first glimpse through the door is that of a skeleton hanging in a dark room from the ceiling, suspended by some sort of odd chain. As the door opens just a bit more and illuminates the scene, the skeleton is revealed to be coated or made from the same shimmering blackish metal, and is wearing a beaten iron crown.

At this point, the door is about a quarter open, enough for one person to easily go through this round, and other persons to have to make a tumbling check to get through quickly and gracefully. The door will take five more rounds to open completely, but the difficulty in passage will be negated completely in two rounds.

The skeleton abruptly doubles in size, and thus reaching the floor, unseats the chain in the ceiling above with a casual yank. The creature catches the falling chain even as its eyes glow with bluish fire, and it begins to speak in a grinding tone. As its words echo into the cavern, Renik and Draax see that the chain is the uncompromising dull grey of adamantite, spiked and ringed to form the exotic weapon known as the spiked chain.

"You must know by now this is a school for training the Sons of Dread. Let the apprentice or apprentices step forth from their minions or allies and identify themselves."

The room itself is a large, round chamber about forty feet in diameter. On the other side of the room is a twenty foot side staircase leading down, from which can clearly be heard the sea, and spaced evenly around the walls are ten foot hallways leading outward like spokes from a wheel.

Standing in the back of the group, Rond still sees and hears nothing out of the ordinary. Kylean still has not returned.

Draax
Monday January 5th, 2004 9:57:54 PM

Draax is a little startled by the sudden growth spurt of the skeleton and its warm words of greeting, but he hides his surprise well.

At the end of the skeleton's speech, Draax takes a half step forward, but stops in his tracks when he remembers that they are not disguised. Keeping his eyes glued to the spiked chain, Draax waits to see how Renik wants to handle this before he says anything.

Rond
Tuesday January 6th, 2004 1:01:20 AM

As the skeleton talks about the Sons of Dread, Rond lets a silent growl go in his throat. When Feng makes his pronouncemnt, Rond reminices about a past spell caster. Rond waits with baited breath to see what happens. Rond very much doubts that what they are seeing is either a real skeleton, or is the only part to this door. Which probably means now they have go in the hard way.

Arien
Tuesday January 6th, 2004 2:12:57 AM

When Feng spouts out Arien sighs to himself and holds his head in one hand. Having the paladin around in combat was handy but he did definetly make things hard when subterfuge was necessary.

Renik  d20+14=33
Tuesday January 6th, 2004 3:38:33 AM

As the skeleton makes its announcement Renik nods. "Yes, that makes sense, the candidate is being tested further. Arien, I think this is your cue. Step forward and..."

Then Feng makes his challenge and Renik slaps his palm to his forehead. "For the love of Wardd! Feng, shut up! Are you trying to get us all killed? We do this by the book! They set challenges, we beat them! What do you think the point of working our way through the puzzles in the last room was?"

(Ref 33 to attempt to prevent the turning)

Hoping that the creature will ignore Feng's outburst, Renik growls "Right, enough grandstanding. Arien, you're up. Let's see what challenge this thing poses."

Setanos (Extended Mage Armor)  d20+4=24
Tuesday January 6th, 2004 9:08:06 AM

Setanos nods with silent approval of Fengs action. That silence is quickly broken with a gasp of 'By Domi!' as he sees the rogue actually trying to stop the paladin from cowering the abomination.

If the rogues actions surprised Setanos, his words hit him like a ton of stones. "GRANDSTANDING!!" he growls. "Bah! Rash I just 'might' have given ya, but ya really think the PALADIN is calling forth 'is holy power ta show off???"

With that Setanos moves up and tries to force the door open further, throwing all his strength into it.

Tratain [Shield of Faith; Endurence; Bull's Strength; Spell Immunity: Fireball, Lightning Bolt]
Tuesday January 6th, 2004 3:09:50 PM

Tratain Casts Bull's Strength on himself in preperation for the fight that is going to come, sooner rather than later it looks like.

He says "Enough, we came here to learn where the School and probably the machine are located. We aren't going to find out if we don't complete these tests. Feng please hold off until we find out the information we need. I'll not leave here until we destroy that abomination, but if we attack first we may never find what we are looking for."

Feng calls upon the power of his deity and the doorway explodes into an arguement. Even as this is carried out, Setanos lays his shoulder into the door, and forces it completely open, with a rather impressive demonstration of raw strength.

Feng completes his gesture and incantation, just a little too far away for Renik to be able to interfere with. An unseen force impacts the towering skeletal figure, but does not damage or rout the necromantic construct.

The massive skeleton begins swinging its spiked chain, and as it unleashes a series of attacks, it laughs, and speaks, all without appearing to require the aid of a magic mouth.

"No simple tool was placed as the door guard... you stand before Yharathik, once gladiatorial champion of the Middle Dark, and now something greater yet. Place your weapons on the ground and plead for mercy, or die."

It then completes its volley of attacks, and steps back fifteen feet into the center of the room. Its whirling chain would clearly threaten anyone entering the room, even from the skeletons position at the center of the room.

(Whirlwind attack strikes Renik, Draax and Setanos, who are all adjacent to the door. Renik, AC 35 for 18pts, Draax, Ac 39 for 15pts (critical for a total of 29pts if ac 34 hits), and Setanos, AC 29 for 14 pts.)

OOC: Tumbling Rules clarification - Dm Ian
Wednesday January 7th, 2004 12:51:53 PM

As per PHB page page 84, its a tumble check DC 15 to move half and avoid attacks of opportunity, and a tumble check DC 25 to move full and avoid AoO's. Since the room is twenty feet in radius, and the critter is in the middle of the room, half move wouldn't quite get characters in range.

Please feel free to alter your posts with this in mind. In the absence of clarification, I'm going to assume players intended the full move option since you also attacked.

There will be a battle map with this rounds posting.

As the group surges forward, the skeleton alters the flow of his chain quickly and gracefully, taking attacks of opportunity as Renik, Draax, and Feng cross into the room. Only Setanos manages to roll under the singing chain, and come up in combat range.

(AoO's, Renik is missed, Draax is criticalled again for 36pts, and Feng is struck a solid blow for 20pts.)

Then, the four warriors move into combat range, with Renik rolling into a flanking position to one side of the melee. Setanos misses, as does two of Fengs three strikes. Feng's smite lands, Draax's attack thunders home, as does Reniks flanking attack. However, the slashing weapons employed find only some purchase on the metal-plated skeleton's frame. Renik's piercing shortsword attacks show little or no effect.

At this point Tratains prayer takes effect, empowering the group, and Rond's horn goes off, settling a circle of protection from evil around him, and echoing around the stony cavern walls.

The skeletal gladiator laughs chillingly, and states, "My thanks."

With this he whirlwind attacks again, assaulting all four warriors nearby. Feng is missed, Setanos is struck, Draax is struck, and the bobbing and weaving of Renik's sunrod makes the attack against him hard to see clearly.

(Setanos, 12pts of damage, Draax 16 pts of damage, and if ac 27 hits renik, then 19pts of damage.)

The party warriors in the front rank see the dents in the shimmering black metal begin to straighten and repair themselves as the looming skeleton starts to regenerate. Currently, the immense skeletal gladiator looks minorly damaged.

(The skeletal gladiator is AC 20 against everyone except Feng, who it is taking care to dodge. To Feng, its AC is 21.)

At the door still, and out of the crashing of combat, Tratain, Rond, Arien, and Thelonius think they might hear something.

(Listen checks please.)

Draax strikes a solid, damaging blow with his warhammer, and watches the spiked chain come around again in slow motion, sure that its going to lay him out. Even as the chain swings, Renik, Feng, and Setanos step in to strike as well. Renik realizes that his piercing weapon is doing negligible damage, and Feng that the creature is not stunned or overly damaged by his superbly placed blows. Then, Ariens bolt catches the skeleton flat footed, and blasts away a chunk of the creatures ribcage. The skeletal gladiator looks massively damaged, even with its ongoing regeneration.

(no crits on undead.)

Tratain's spell causes the undead warrior to lurch in visible pain, even as it restores health to the warriors of the group. Draax straightens a bit, and then Setanos steps in to take the next chain swing for him.

The skeletal warrior whirlwind attacks again. Renik is missed, Setanos is struck twice (once for himself and once for Draax), and Feng is struck, despite Setanos' aid.

(Setanos takes 33 pts of damage, and Feng takes 13.)

Rond and Thelonius both slip into nearby, convenient shadows and prepare missile weapons. Rond hears the low roar of an angry Taur down one of the hallways to the right.

Jogging in to render aid, Tratain barely ducks a length of spiked chain hurled his way.

Setanos cracks one of the skeletons legs with massive overhand blows, as Tratain annihilates the other with his spell, bringing the skeletal figure down enough for Draax to smash skull and torso brutally with well placed swings.

There is a brief moment of silence that follows. Looking down, Tratain, Arien and Setanos note that not only has the regeneration ceased, but the blackish metal covering the creature has cracked in places to reveal normal bone. As they puzzle over this, Arien remembers a text from his visit to the Star Mage tower, which was labelled "Techniques for the Enhancing and Grafting of Undead". Perhaps that sort of practice would explain this...

The skeleton and its chain abruptly reduce in size, leaving what was originally a six foot skeleton, a beaten iron crown, and a normal sized adamantite spiked chain.

Just at this moment, a greasy haired five and a half foot tall human runs into the room from the eastward heading hallway. He opens his mouth to shout, and a pair of throwing knives tumble end over end from the shadows on the side of the room, taking the red-robed man in the throat before he can complete his shout. Turning, the group sees Thelonius revealed, already stepping back to the shadowed door.

From the opposite, westward hallway, the group suddenly hears a door open some distance away, and a deep, Taurish roar.

From the staircase directly ahead, the sounds of the sea are still clearly audible, but the group can also hear a voice shouting orders. The intent isn't clear, but the tongue is recognizable from your recent battles on the coast. It is the sibilant speech of the sahuagin.

There is no sign Renik is still in the area. Either he has moved a good distance silently, or has teleported. The group finds itself without a light, and the vision of the non-humans begins to adjust.

As the group comes back together and discusses moving out, the westmost tunnel sounds with another Taurish roar. Arien turns and sees a red robed minoTaur with a greataxe slung over its shoulder see the group, roar again, and take off running away from the group back towards the door at the end of the hallway. Undoubtedly, he is going for aid.

Draax thanks everyone for the healing. He agrees with others about leaving and regrouping. "You are right we need to get back with the information we have now." Draax helps Rond put the mage on his should and then takes a cloth and scoops up a few pieces of the metal.

When the minoTaur is spotted going for help Draax curses under his breath. "Well that settles it. If surprise wasn't gone before it is now. We can chase horn boy and possibly run into who knows how many of his friends or we can get out of here. I vote for the latter."

Draax quickly follows Tratain to the door.

The group files back through the great valve door quickly, hearing the dungeon begin to mobilze around them. As Tratain is the last through and pulls the lever to get the great valve door to swing into place, he sees movement on the edges of the room through his googles.

Coming up the staircase is a sahuagin spear line, organized and evenly spaced, with koalinth crossbowmen over the top looking for targets. Coming from the far left hallway comes a flying five foot diameter sphere of darkness sailing in along the ceiling.

Then, the door closes. Tratain believes he could wedge the tightly fitting valve easily, if he had something like an iron spike, or a shortsword he was willing to use.

He Continues "Someone Grab the Key Mechanism, we'll need some sample of the metal to bring back with us. And after I finish Jamming the door get away from it, theres a big Dark sphere in there, I can't tell exactly what it is but i don't like the looks of it at all. When I'm finished we need to go, and quickly."

Tratain attempts to Jam the door with the Three daggers they took from the warriors if no Metal spikes or shortswords are offered. If no one else Grabs the Key mechanism he will take it and then head for the way out of the inn.

Tratain jams the door easily and quickly with several daggers and his warhammer. The sound of the act is loud, but the only people who care besides you are on the other side.

Draax scouts forward, followed closely by the remainder of the party. The group crosses the testing cavern, goes up the staircase, and across the hallway on the second level of the inn. So far, clear.

Draax makes his way to the top of the staircase leading down into the now-silent inn main room. Outside, you can hear the nearby sea, and the wind howling down out of the north. The room is dark, and apparently quiet.

(Spot and listen please, Draax.)

Bringing up the rear, Tratain hears no attempts to force the valve door he jammed.

Getting ready to descend the staircase back into the main room, Draax gets halfway down the wide staircase, stepping over the bloody stain where the bard was killed, before he notices a rug haphazardly thrown over the bottom two stairs.

The group is bunched up behind Draax on the staircase, with Arien still on the landing at the top of the staircase. The main room of the in is very dark, with the front door hanging partially open, giving a tantalizing yet distant view of the clearing outside the inn.

Scanning the room, Draax and Feng see nothing visible, outside of cover. Then, Feng looks again with his innate detection, and sees that the whole room reeks of evil (moderate evil aura). The room certainly wasn't like this before...

Setanos moves up to the rug. As he manuevers his weapon into place to peer under the rug, Rond chucks the cooling corpse of the apprentice necromancer in a low arc with a grunt. The body flies about half the distance, and then crashes down the staircase to the bottom. Nothing happens.

As Tratain hurdles the bannister to the floor of the inn below, Setanos pries up the edge of the carpet, and Wold goes to the proverbial hell.

Setanos sees a glowing rune inscribed in a language he recognizes (but can't read) as underWoldian. The glyph prompty explodes in a blast of frost.

(12 pts of damage to Setanos and Rond, ref save for half vs DC 17).

Just a fraction of a second later, Setanos, Feng, Rond and Draax go blind. From his vantage point on the floor, Tratain is suddenly glad for his goggles of night. He sees a globe of darkness radiating from some point on the staircase, covering a 20 foot diameter sphere. He sees the front door of the inn open fully, and a group of undead shamble into the room.

They are gaunt, emaciated figures wrathed in dirty rags that were possibly once reddish silk. Protruding from their forms at irregular intervals are what appear to be wicked spikes and barbs of the shimmering blackish metal, between two and six inches long.

He also sees two black skinned elves peer over the bar, and one over the tipped table nearest the door. Taking advantage of cover, the one nearest the door calls to the undead beings, directing them towards Tratain and the base of the staircase. The two behind the bar treat Tratain to hand crossbow-fire. Both shots miss, imbedded in the bannister behind Tratain.

Arien can also see clearly, as the sphere of darkness ends just at the top of the stairs. For just a moment it seems the fight has passed him by, and then a two dagger wielding dark elven male pops into visibility attacking Arien. Of the five fast swings, four impact the flat footed Arien. One dagger glints the dull grey of adamantite in the low light, but the other shimmers sickeningly black.

(34 pts of damage, two points of constitution damage as a wounding effect activates, and a fort save vs DC 17, please.)

Feng hurdles the last several feet and reaches the bottom of the staircase first, with the thunderous impact one would expect from a big man. In doing so, he soars out of the darkness field, and lands to find a silk-wathed, rotting being with spike grafts bearing down on him. The creature leaps forward in an attempt to grapple Feng, and just barely fails. However, a second rotting thing jumps a nearby table and succeeds where its companion failed. Feng takes a small amount of damage as the creature finds purchase with spike-decorated arms.

(Please make a strength check vs a DC of 16. Failure means Feng is pinned. Success means he throws the creature off as a move action. Feng takes 3 pts of damage.)

Tratain then raises his voice, and calls upon Domi. As holy power rises in him, he feels something unholy also rise in the room, and impede the flow of his might. This place has clearly been desecrated. Perhaps for this reason or another, none of the undead are fazed by his turning attempt. Two of the mummies rush onward, and attempt to grapple Tratain. Tratain just manages to bob and weave out of the reach of these abominations.

(for future reference, I think Tratains religion skill gives him a +2 to turning checks vs undead now in 3.5 I could be wrong, but would be worth looking up.)

Draax, Setanos, and Rond all begin to move down the stairs differently as everyone in the room hears (and in the case of Feng and Tratain, sees), the dark elven priestess by the door cast a spell from cover behind a table.

With this, there is a sudden furnace of unholy power, as a large fire elemental appears in the midst of Draax and Setanos at the base of the staircase. They can easily tell where the beast is as it emits a crackling roar. Setanos and Draax emerge from the field of darkness to see the elemental beginning to move after them. The nearby wall and floor begins to smolder and char.

Setanos is able to take one powerful swing at the undead near, but not grappling Feng. He strikes the abomination, but only lands a glancing blow of no consequence.

(Missed blow by virtue of natural armor.)

Rond takes a moment to ground out his movement, and take his bearings. In such a quiet state, he hears Arien hit the floor heavily, probably unconscious. Shortly following this, a mocking, smoky male voice says, "Alluve, weak cousin. Welcome to life as a slave."

Rond then hears this being begin to make its way down the staircase towards him, and the backs of his comrades.

The last two undead creatures respond to a barked command from the priestess, and retreat to crouch before her table, obviously intended as guards. They could run into battle and reach either Feng or Tratain at a moments notice.

The two drow behind the bar reload quickly, and snap two more shots at Tratain. One shot is pathetic, and one shot nicks Tratain with a hand crossbow bolt.

(As per woldian rules, a natural 20 always hits. 3 pts of damage, and a Fort save vs DC 17.)

As each character gets a look at these rotting beings, a feeling of revulsion passes over you, accompanied by a supernatural fear.

(Will save vs DC 15 please, Tratain and Feng are immune.)

Draax wallops the flaming elemental twice for good effect, from his position in the triangle of Feng, Setanos, and Draax fighting almost back to back.

About ten feet over to the right, Tratain hammers the lead undead with two strikes, his holy weapon sizzling as it hits the undead.

Crouched behind the table, the priestess is able to duck as Setantos' acid bolt hurtles across the room, and avoids the impact.

Rond comes down the staircase out of the darkness effect to find himself looking at the flaming... back? of the elemental engaging Draax.

(Feel free to take this round of attacks on this flat footed target if you like.)

The priestess barks a command to the two uncommited undead, which stand up and begin to move forward. One moves towards Tratain, and the second moves directly at Setanos, closing into melee range, but not able to attack. She then utters some wicked prayer to an unspeakable divinity, with no visable effect.

Tratain suddenly recognizes these undead as mummies, albiet modified with the spikes of that shimmering blackish metal. He remembers that unless they are somehow signifigantly tougher than expected, he should be able to turn them. As he considers this, though, the two mummies attempt to grapple him again. Both are easily avoided.

The two mummies on Feng try to restablish their hold. Feng avoids one, but the other grabs his weapon arm, and tries to establish a lock.

The elemental vents its fiery fury towards Draax. Its swings are clumsy, but an incredible heat accompanies them. The creature lands one blow, staggering and burning Draax.

(13 pts physical, and 3 pts fire).

Two crossbow bolts are fired from the drow behind the counter at Tratain, but their aim remains abysmal.

Finally, a five foot two dark elven male steps out of the darkness only a few feet from Rond. He smiles evilly at Rond, and speaks in a cultured voice as he steps in and stabs once with his left hand, using a shimmering black knife.

"Ahh.. another slave for our collection. Surrender, slave, if you wish to avoid the pain your wizard friend just felt on my knives."

(8pts of damage and 1 pt of constitution lost, as a wounding effect starts on Rond.)

Draax leads the tide, swinging and connecting twice with the elemental. The creature seems to shrink in size a bit, and grow less warm.

Setanos tries to roll past the mummy, who is able to stay with him. When he begins to incant the spell, the mummy throws a spiked fist at Setanos, ruining his concentration.

(AoO, setanos takes 4 pts of damage, and a fort save vs DC 19.)

There is a shifting in the shadows by the door, but no one is sure what might be there. The priestess is completely focused, and has no idea anything is behind her.

Tratain gathers up his will again, and this time holy power blasts from his symbol of Domi in a wave, catching the three mummies before him with a visible surge that sends them fleeing back towards the far wall. Tratain is now unengaged in combat.

Rond connects once with each sword, and just barely with the short blade. The dark elf reels under the force of his attacks, and enters a defensive stance before throwing attacks back at Rond. The dark elf swings five times, and connects once with each blade, criticalling Rond with his adamantite dagger.

(a total of 23 pts of damage, and one more con point lost.)

The two mummies on Feng bear him to the ground, and begin to tear at the noble paladin with the spikes protruding from their bodies.

(15 pts of damage to Feng.)

Crowing triumphantly, the priestess stands, and incants a dark prayer. Then, she attempts to touch Setanos.

(Touch AC:19, cause serious wounds, for 16 pts of damage)

At the same time, the mummy behind Setanos attempts another grapple, and its initial attempts look successful.

(strength check vs DC 21 please, Setanos)

The two dark elves refocus their pathetic attempts to shoot Tratain. Once again, the only danger they pose is to the battered staircase.

The elemental has the final word, swinging again at Draax. However, the extraplanar being is stunned by the force and placement of Draax' thunderous blows, and is unable to damage the warrior.

The wolf lunges directly for the Priestess' leg, gouging it's teeth in her calf (AC19, 3HP) and with a twist of it's powerful neck, attempts to topple the Dark Elf to the ground (DC14 Strenght check to avoid the trip, no AoO, wolf special attack)

Leaning out of the way of the elemental's attack, Draax counterattacks with a couple of swings of his own. (Hit AC 34 for 15dmg, AC 17 for 12dmg)

Draax trounces the flaming elemental, causing it to vanish with a pop, as Rond drops the dark elven knifefighter. Just a fraction of a second later, the mysterious newcomer and his wolf throw the priestess to the ground and begin to rain blows down on her.

Then, Tratains healing spell goes off, and the two mummies on Feng, and the one on Setanos shriek, even as the party feels its wounds close. Arien, while out of sight at the top of the stairs, is healed, and awakens.

(My calculations show that including the con point loss, Arien should be at -6hp before the cure goes off, and thus is restored to consciousness at 5hp. This includes bleeding one point every round he was unconscious.)

Setanos tackles the mummy squarely, but is unable to bear it to the ground. He feels waves of foulness rise of the creature into his body as he wrestles with the undead being.

(Fort save vs DC 19 again, please.)

Feng keeps wrestling with his two foes, and is torn again with their body spikes.

(Total of 19 pts of damage. Strength check vs DC 12 to break out, if you wish.)

The two remaining crossbowmen fire at the newcomer, snapping a flurry of desperate shots. One of the bolts comes dangerously close to impacting, but in the end, they simply decorate the swinging inn door in a haphazard pattern.

The three turned mummies cower against the far wall, in the wreckage of the stage, where the hill giant fell.

The two grappling Feng release their hold and stand up, just as Rond, Arien, and Draax assault the creatures. The mummy engaged with Setanos isn't allowed to run, however. Setanos pulls the undead's legs out from under it, sending it crashing to the ground.

The dark elf crossbowmen turn and flee into the kitchen area, out of sight.

The priestess takes a pounding, and rolls over to look up at her assailant. Pure hatred radiates from reddish eyes, and then blackness descends over the door, the newcomer, the wolf, and the priestess. The wolf at least, is not the slightest bit fooled, and paws at the ground, elicting a noisy roll from the priestess on the ground.

Outside, the night winds begin to rise again, howling. The sound is both unsettling, and potentially obscuring other events.

Arien, please make a listen check.

Though taken aback by the sudden darkness, the brutish character continues his assault. Flailing about with a righteous fury where he believes the priestess is still located. The whole while, his heavy breaths almost sound like growls and despite having crushed the floor with his bare hand seems to feel no pain.

His first attack undaunted by the darkness crushes the dark elf (57% vs Darkness, AC25, HP7). Gauging her location by the first attack, he swings in for another blow, connecting solidly, but either tiring or distracted by the darkness the force behind it is lacking (67% vs. Darkness, AC30, HP3).

The unsettling darkness, coupled with the priestess' dexterity allow her to avoid the strong right fist (3% vs Darkness, miss, AC10, 6HP). However, she steps just right for his staunch left fist to batter her once again (99% vs darkness, AC24, HP4).

The wolf, able to pinpoint her evil stench through the darkness lunges for her once again, but as before, his teeth skitter off her armor, preventing a solid bite (AC13,HP4).

ooc: Note sure if we're supposed to use upper or lower 20% vs. darkness, so I assumed lower, and unless I'm told otherwise, I'll continue to use lower % as bad for me on concealment checks.

Rond and Draax mercilessly pummel one of the fleeing mummies, shredding its rotted form, which falls to the ground and disintigrates into a cloud of dust and six inch spikes of that shimmering black metal.

Feng is able to regain his feet, and looks up to see the darkness globe by the door wink out. The mysterious newcomer has apparently thumped the priestess into unconscious submission. Looking down, the newcomer finds himself standing over a rather exotically attractice dark elven woman in chain armor. Even though see appears insensate, a wicked flanged mace nearby and some sort of holy symbol tattooed into her palms marks her lifestyle. A heavy leather pouch hangs from one side of her belt, but otherwise, she has no additional equipment.

Chasing the drow crossbowmen into the next room, Tratain finds an open trapdoor in the center of the kitchen, and sees a drow disappearing quickly down a ladder downward. The other drow is not in sight.

Setanos tries to wrestle the groaning mummy back down to the ground as it struggles, and successfully gets free. Its first action is to look again at Tratain, and run, joining the other four remaining mummies in a cowering mass against the far wall.

Its really eerie to see them standing away from the group, the spikes protruding from their body suddenly catching the glimmer of a flash of lightning outside. The storm appears to be gaining in strength, and rain can be heard to start coming down outside. Then, a sudden clap of thunder sounds, only a few seconds later, nearly deafening those near the door.

Standing back and surveying the action from above, Arien sees that the combat has successfully been turned. As he looks for a convenient target, his keen elven hearing picks up the sounds of many feet coming up the nearby staircase. Apparently Tratain's spiked door didn't hold for very long.

Arien thinks there are least twenty, and hears the sibilant speech of the sahuagin, and some sort of corrupted dwarven in the mix. They will probably arrive in a few rounds.

With bloodlust in his eyes and a thirst for vengeance in his heart, the wild man continues his assault upon the now beaten priestess. It is almost as if he doesn't comprehend that she's beaten and most likely dead.

Thursday January 29th, 2004 8:29:01 PM

The party regroups in the destroyed common room of what used to be a functioning inn. Between the howling storm filling the night outside, the sound of rain on the roof, and groaning of the cowering mummies, its quite the scene.

Tratain and Feng leap at the newcomer, trying to stop the additional violence, and don;t quite get there in time. However, the priestess, despite being bloody and bruised, is still only unconscious, and is stabilized by Tratains healing.

Arien, Setanos and Draax meet up at the base of the stairs, both hearing the passage of many footsteps, the source of which, concealed by the wall. Arien drinks a healing potion, and feels a little better, but still worn.

(Sheet I have says Tratain is no longer a protector, sorry.)

A loud chanting also arises from the forces coming up the hidden stair. Setanos and Arien easily make out the gist of the spells... at least six casters all summoning various beasts.

(spellcraft checks if you stick around to try to figure it out.)

Rond looks out into the rain, and knows that tracking would be almost impossible in such a storm-wracked night. Between winds that are probably around 40-60mph, rain coming down sideways, and the occasional lightning ruining darkvision, tracking would be slow and tortuous. Certainly, slower than a group could flee this place.

The newcomer, standing by the door, notices the mummies nearby, smells the reeking foulness coming off their unnatural forms. He also notices that four to six inch spikes have been inset in to the mummies at irregular intervals. The spikes are an odd, shimmering blackish metal hes never seen before, and match a dagger of the same material in the hand of the unconscious dark elf warrior at the base of the stairs near Draax's feet. The remainder of the drow warrior's equipment lays nearby.

Draax AC25, HP59 (3 fire dmg)
Thursday January 29th, 2004 10:13:22 PM

Draax uses a rag and picks up the dark elf's dagger and puts it in his backpack, he also grab the rest of the downed elf's gear to go through later. He thinks about killing the elf, but cuts his eye at Feng and decides against it. He goes to the front door and steps out into the rain. "Let get out of here, I have no problem with fighting these evil beings, but there seems to be too many for us to conquer at this time."

He turns to the new coming, "Thanks for the help, I think that you and you friend should come with us."

Feng: HP 37: AC 23
Thursday January 29th, 2004 11:42:39 PM

Despite his injuries, Feng sets the drow priestess over his should and heads out the door following the others. He only saw the woman briefly but wondered how somebody so beautiful could be so evil.

ooc: for the newcomer, Feng is a half-orc but he is odd. Feng is very handsome.

Wild Man  d20+12=15
Thursday January 29th, 2004 11:44:26 PM

The wild man crouches to all fours, facing toward the towering half-orc the others have called Feng. He curls up his lip and lets out a noticeable snarl as his prey is snatched away. He does take a darting lunge at the pouch dangling from the cleric's belt, snatching it away (AC15). The gesture definitely does not seem to be one of greed, but more like that of trophy collecting.

He suspiciously scans over the other members of the party, sizing them up and noting their more obvious injuries. His eyes shift over to the cowering mummies, he tilts his head back, seeming to aim his nose at them and sniffs the air. He shakes his head violently, coughing and hacking as if the stench of the undead abominations is genuinely painful to him.

Hearing the approach of more people coming from the stairs and noting the concern in Draax's voice, he let's out a bark and moves for the door. In a gravelly voice, one obviously not used to speaking in words, he declares, "Follow me, I know a place we can hide and rest." The wolf takes up a position by his side and they move out into the storm.

He proceeds slowly at first, gazing back to see if the rest are in pursuit. He motions for the rest to follow if they do not.

ooc: not sure if I really needed to make the attack roll on the purse, but what the heck.

Arien (Extended Mage Armor, Shield AC 25) 36hp  2d8(8+4)+3=15 2d8(5+8)+3=16
Friday January 30th, 2004 3:18:30 AM

"Ah that helps quite a bit Rond, thank you. But still..." Arien digs in his pouch and pulls out another potion of Cure Moderate Wounds and downs it in a gulp. Tossing the empty vial on the floor Arien says, "We should leave a surprise behind for our friends to slow them down, ah I know." Arien digs a Tanglefoot bag out of his pocket and tosses it lightly to the nearest party member, "Throw that on the stairs will you, it should slow down the sahuagin long enough for us to get far enough away." That said Arien beats a retreat outside.

Tratain AC 27 HP 74 [Shield of Faith; Endurence; Bull's Strength; Spell Immunity: Fireball, Lightning Bolt]
Friday January 30th, 2004 1:39:44 PM

Tratain follows the others outside the inn, makeing sure everyone gets out safely.

He says to Arien on the way out "Remember that conversation about not burning the inn down we had? I think you should forget it. If you can launch a fireball in there on the way out, that should slow them down I hope while we get away."

Rond HP 63 AC 18/19

"If our friend here knows a place that can help us out, I'd rather take my chance there."

Rond then works on picking up the dead mage's body.

An orderly retreat - Dm Ian
Friday January 30th, 2004 6:01:18 PM

Feng lifts the slender drow priestess over his shoulder, noting as her damaged robes shift that she is wearing a mithril shirt underneath. Rond also picks up the unconscious male drow warrior, as Draax carefully gathers up the fallen dark elves buckler, a belt pouch. and two knives. Draax notes that the second knife is adamantite, and the buckler is a blackened steel.

Casually shouldering the load of his prisoner, Feng tucks the priestess' weapon into his belt, noting the adamantite flanged mace, as Sarigar darts in and grabs the priestesses pouch, before turning and leading the group out into the storm.

On the way out, Arien scatters a tanglefoot bag over the base of the stairs, and then follows the group out into the stormy night, accompanied by Tratain as a rearguard.

Arien and Tratain see no immediate chase as the group fades away into the night.

The mysterious newcomer and his wolf lead the party onward at a brisk pace away from the sea and the few signs of civilisation in the area. Further and further out into the wilderness the group progresses, passing between groups of trees over patches of stony ground in between. It is obvious that the newcomer understands what any potential tracker would be looking for.

After a hard fifteen or twenty minutes of hustle, the party finds itself at a tumbled rock monolith in a secluded group of a dozen tall trees. The north side of the copse has a thick berry bramble that breaks the wind, and the rock pile forms a low hanging cave that can easily fit ten people away from the wind.

The two unconscious drow captives are dragged into this refuge as the group packs in around them, and the newcomer's wolf sniffs around the edges of the cave-like area.

As the group begins to settle in to the small cave, the wild man and the wolf stake out a spot to the side near the opening. He slips off his backpack and begins rummaging through it.

He begins to get a little frazzled as if he can't seem to find what he's looking for and starts to reach deeper and deeper into the rucksack. First he removes an uncoiled length of sturdy rope which seeing as it is 50 feet long, takes some time. He almost looks like a magician pulling scarves out of his pocket. Second is a shovel, yes, a full size shovel. Noting the outward dimensions of the pack, there is no conceivable way you can think of how he could fit that in there. Next, a handful of chalk, mostly broken, but a couple sticks seem to be intact. Next, he pulls out a set of manacles, he holds them up in front of him with a most puzzled look on his face, shrugs, then tosses them over his shoulder. Lastly, he pulls out a large bearskin, yet another object that defies the dimensions of the bag.

He puts all but the bearskin back in his bag then gathers the bearskin up around himself and his wolf. The way in which he situates the skin, you cannot really see any part of him, but you can feel his eyes, peering out from under the makeshift blanket, watching you carefully.

Setanos (AC 19 HP 54/83) [Extended Mage Armor]

Setanos follows through the storm, curious as to where this wild man is leading them. When the arrive he assists with the restraining of the Drow.

After thats done, he looks around to his party with a 'what now' look. He looks to Feng. "Well, do ya wanna wake em now or later?"

Spell Durations:

Draax AC25, HP59
Sunday February 1st, 2004 4:00:55 PM

Draax follows the newcomer and his companion to the hiding place. When they arrive he takes time to tie up and gag the prisoners. When the prisoners are secure, the half-elven warrior takes a moment to study the wild man and his wolf brother. He cannot help noticing the similarity in their mannerisms to his old comrades Ferrak and Darkfang.

Deciding that they are safe for the moment, Draax finds a comfortable spot on the floor and closes his eyes getting a little rest while he can.

Feng: HP 37: AC 23
Sunday February 1st, 2004 11:02:08 PM

Feng pulls out a small length of rope and bings the womans hands. He takes a moment to admire her beauty before he reminds himself that she is evil.

"That is a good question. Right now they are weak but so are we."

Arien (Extended Mage Armor, AC 21) 36hp
Monday February 2nd, 2004 3:25:05 AM

Arien gives the drow a disgusted glance and sits as far away from them as possible inside the cave. Arien considers a moment before he says, "Let them sleep, I could use some rest myself before... dealing with them." Arien then leans back against the wall of the cave and promptly enters Trance.

Extended Mage Armor: 18 hours

Rond
Monday February 2nd, 2004 1:23:31 PM

Rond tries to follow where he wild man leads the group, as the move towards the cave.

Once inside the cave, Rond will say, "I'll take the first watch, why don't we see about getting everyone healed. At the very least I have these " as Rond digs out is CLW and CMW wants " to help if we need it."

(Let me know how many charges I use up)

"I'm thinking we should get some sleep and the probably head back to the city. We have no way to communicate with our bosses, since Renik was holding the communication device. They will probably want to talk to the mage "indicating the body he brought with him. " and they are probably better able to deal with her " indicating the Drow.

Arien I'm thinking that you would help with transporting us back to the city.

"I want at least two people on watch, one at the cave entrance, and one watching the prisoner.

Any thoughts at this point?"

Then looking at their helper, Rond extends his hand. "I am called Rond. We appreciate your help." If the newcomer doesn't appear to take his hand in a clasp, then Rond will offer his hand for a sniff, to see if he'll respond as such. Rond is reminded of another wolf pairing that has left the group for the time being.
