DM Bob & Carla Monday January 19th, 2004 7:49:42 AM
Wynn leaves Dulcet's home and is soon out of sight. The party continues it's deliberations over treasure. Dulcet's cat, Mel, sashays into the sitting room and Cassandra feels compelled to try out the mask. As soon as the mask touches the witch's face it seems to adhere, almost fusing with her anatomy. Struggle as she might she cannot remove it.
"Someone help me!" she cries.
Lorth Monday January 19th, 2004 8:21:16 AM
Lorth thanks Cadmar for the potions, then jumps to his feet when Cassandra asks for help. "My lady, are you in pain? or can you just not remove the mask? If the latter, please calm down and let some of the magical types take a look at it." Lorth glances at Elerinn.
Cadmar d20+9=23 Monday January 19th, 2004 9:07:48 AM
"Wha!... Cassandra!"
By Domi, this girl has a talent for getting into trouble.
Cadmar jumps to his feet and runs over to the witch, but then stops, not sure if trying to pry off the mask will do her harm. So instead he looks the mask over, searching for any obvious means of removing it or any command words etched into the patterns on its surface [Spellcraft 23].
Elerinn d20+8=12 d20+10=12 Monday January 19th, 2004 9:50:26 AM
When the exotic mask fuses with Cassandra's face, he is paralyzed for a moment. But when Lorth looks at him, he realizes what to do and helps Cadmar examine the mask.

Garrard d20+7=23 Monday January 19th, 2004 10:19:32 PM
Shocked, Garrard mutters a quick prayer of Guidance, and examines Cassandra with his healing skills.
(DC: 23!)
Andrath Tuesday January 20th, 2004 1:17:19 AM
Andrath is clearly impressed by the organizational skills of the ranger, and says, "Cadmar, you are doing a great job keeping track of these items. I admit I had some reservations about what I thought was going to be an unworkable ledger system, but what you propose is simple and easy to understand. I will take the potions as you suggest, and hold onto the potion of sneaking and jumping, but realize that they are available. As a matter of fact, I presume all potions and scrolls are generally useable by all members of the party, as needed. Every so often, we should give a quick accounting of what each has, so that we can balance out such potions as cures, strength enhancers, etc.
"I personally have little use for the short bow, as I am also happy with the longbow that I currently use. I propose that we sell the short bow, and split the money. That way, each of us should have enough money for a masterwork armour or weapon. Also, if Lorth or Kedarn want the chain shirt, fine. And I am surprised that nobody wants to take possession of the shield. But if not, then it could be sold as well, giving us all more money for masterwork stuff. The reason that I want to hang onto the longsword is that I hear there are some creatures that can only be hurt by magic, so we probably should have at least one such item in the party. And if we sell the bow and the shield, then you can take the money off the top to purchase the wand that you propose.
"As for the turban of staring, I guess we could sell it. It probably doesn't make much sense for the party scout to be sporting a magic item that draws that kind of attention, anyway."
When the mask attaches to Cassandra's face, Andrath is at a total loss as to what to do. "What is going on? Elerinn, Alkali, why is that mask attaching to Cassandra like that?" He looks over at Dulcet, and asks, "What kind of magic is this? Have you ever seen anything like this before?"
Kedarn Tuesday January 20th, 2004 6:42:54 AM
"Cassandra, is it causing you any physical pain?" Kedarn asks.
Kedarn says to Cadmar "I will take the shortbow. I want to let you know I will be going to the catacombs and try to exchange it for a composite longbow of equivelent enchantment."
ADM Bob and Carla Tuesday January 20th, 2004 7:33:22 AM
An equitable plan is established regarding the distribution of the party's wealth.
Realizing her faux pas, Cassandra covers her face with her hands. At the gentle examination by Garrard she relinquishes, and the druid along with Cadmar and Elerinn examine the mask. They see that it has formed seamlessly to the witch's face and there appears to be no way to physically pry it off. The appearance has not changed, it is a grey mask with rose coloured eye-holes. A pattern of animals carved in relief adorns the outer rim.
In response to Lorth and Kedarn's enquiry, Cassandra wails, "it doesn't hurt, but it won't come off!
Dulcet stares at her apprentice, and shaking her head, says "I did not detect this when I first examined the mask. Let me look at it again. Come here you silly goose!" As soon as the words leave her mouth, Cassandra's face elongates into a round beaked shape, and she begins to make a honking sound. When the head witch approaches, the ill-fated apprentice shakes her head from side to side hissing and honking."
Lorth Tuesday January 20th, 2004 7:55:29 AM
Lorth is clearly taken aback by Cassandra's transformation. "Perhaps that thing is cursed?!"
Cadmar Tuesday January 20th, 2004 9:15:58 AM
"Oh dear Domi." Cadmar stands helpless admiring Cassandra as a goose. His face bears an expression of a man who has been biten by his own puppy. Then he sits down, his head in his hands.
"What an ill-fortuned journey this has been. First Thram, then Mindoses, and now, to top it all, this..."
The ranger's thoughts turn to Wynn. If he was still around he could probably recall something about such masks. But he is gone.
Then he just sits there in silence, hoping that Dulcet can find a way to undo the curse.
The treasure, forgotten for a moment, rests divided into neat piles on the table.

Elerinn Tuesday January 20th, 2004 1:59:53 PM
Elerinn looks from Cassandra, now transformed in a goose, to Dulcet and back at Cassandra again. The gnome noticed that after Dulcet called her apprentice a goose, she turned into one. Hoping it will be this simple, Elerinn turns to the transformed Cassandra. "Human", he says, but this feels incredibly stupid to him.
Kedarn Tuesday January 20th, 2004 7:58:03 PM
Kedarn looks to the others thn to Dulcet and asks "Have you any idea on what needs to be done to remove it and change Cassandra back to normal?"
Kedarn will place the chainmail in his haversack for the time being and sling the shortbow over his shoulder. Kedarn wil then look at Cadmar then say "I think a couple of remove curse scrolls would be good to get or a wand of remove curse, if there is enough money for them."
Garrard d20+7=15 Tuesday January 20th, 2004 8:21:04 PM
Garrard wracks his brain to see if he can remember such an item being a fae or woodland legend.
(Knowledge nature check: DC: 15)
Once he conveys his answer, he considers for a moment, and then begins pulling a number of items out of his pouches. He hands Cadmar two potions of cure light wounds, and the wand of cure light wounds with 18 charges remaining. He also relinquishes the potions the party had entrusted to him.
"I have felt for some time that the fate of this group is bound up in the politics of chaotic magic. It is something that perhaps should be fought by heroes, but there are worse dangers in this area to the woods, and the earth. It was those dangers I came here to find originally."
"I must take my leave and go. It has been an interesting adventure knowing each of you."
With this Garrard formally bows to each in turn, including the witches, and quietly leaves the home of the Coven of Weal.
Alkali d20=6 Tuesday January 20th, 2004 9:53:34 PM

Andrath Wednesday January 21st, 2004 12:34:06 AM
Still clearly out of his league with the crazy face-grabbing mask, Andrath waits to hear from Dulcet and the magic-wielders in the party as to what can be done to help Cassandra. "As I understand, don't clerics have access to spells that can remove cursed items like this?"
When Garrard states his intention to leave, Andrath asks, "Are you leaving us for ever, or will you be returning? Are you unhappy with what we have done to date? Are you aware of the dangers that you speak of, and can we help you in trying to deal with them?"
[OOC: Is Garrard leaving the Cinnamon Valley game?]
OOC: Ian Wednesday January 21st, 2004 12:51:30 AM
Yes. Part of it is designing character Rp that doesn't seem to fit with the group direction, and part is other demands on my time that I have to give more weight.
DM Bob & Carla Wednesday January 21st, 2004 8:06:37 AM
The party responds to Cassandra's predicament, as they observe the transformations she undergoes and they try to comprehend the magic that binds the mask to Cassandra's face.
Lorth states the obvious and Cadmar despairs. Elerinn makes a valiant attempt to change the young elf's face into that of a human but is unsuccessful. When Kedarn mentions her name, the mask returns to it's original form.
Cassandra gasps "what was that?"
Before any can respond, the inquisitive Alkali triggers another rapid series of transformations, and Cassandras's face assumes the likeness of a moose, followed immediately by that of a wolf as she begins to howl mournfully.
Garrard takes his leave of the group, discouraged by the chaotic nature of the events that have unfolded.
Finally, Dulcet wades in..."Be quiet Cassandra" she calls, and the mask that controls the young woman once again transforms into a simple grey wooden mask. "It's hard enough to think without all that racket. Andrath is right, Clerics and witches have spells at their disposal to remove cursed items. If I am given a moment of peace to concentrate, I will attempt exactly that."
Dulcet casts a stern eye at Alkali before beginning her incantations [Casts remove curse]. Despite Dulcet's magic, the mask remains fused to Cassandra's face, and she begins to weep uncontrollably.
Cadmar Wednesday January 21st, 2004 8:28:13 AM
The ranger doesn't know what he should react to first: Garrard's declaration, Alkali's silly prank, or weeping Cassandra. So he just nods unhappily to Garrard, acknowledging man's decision, casts a stern look at Alkali, and then walks up to Cassandra, hugs her, and kisses her on the brow, right above the mask.
"Don't worry, we'll find a way of removing it, I promise."
Remove Curse didn't work. Damn. This is serious.
"Does anything else come to your mind, Lady Dulcet? If there are no other obvious things we can try straight away then we could consult Fergoes; he might have heard about such things before and might give us some advice." Cadmar eyes the witch, not sure what is her opinion of the resident wizard of Jarlswolf.
Lorth Wednesday January 21st, 2004 9:19:10 AM
Lorth stands up. "There must be something we can do. If there are no other suggestions I agree with Cadmar that we should consult Fergoes."
(OOC: Is Wynn gone for good also?)
(DM Carla Response: the DM has to resign his PC and Wynn is Bob's PC)
Elerinn Wednesday January 21st, 2004 6:04:25 PM
When Dulcet's magic fails, Elerinn sighs and looks at Cadmar, who is also visibly touched by Cassandra's curse. He ignores Alkali's jokes and looks at the place Garrard stood before he left. Now it's empty.
Elerinn feels bad about the loss of his three newfound friends, quickly in succesion. Believing he has already lost too much in his life, for someone of his age, the gnome feels strange. Feelings of fear, sadness and, perhaps, anger, course through Elerinn's body.
But when he looks at the weeping witch again, he decides that, at this time, there are things more important than his personal feelings.
Alkali Wednesday January 21st, 2004 9:32:21 PM
Alkali feels embarassed as everyone looks at him poorly. Suprised at Garrard's sudden departure, Alkali bows and waves good bye.
When Dulcet tries to Remove Curse and it fails Alkali thinks. "Is there a way we can make it more powerful? Do we need any specific herbs or anything? That's what Dad used to do."
Andrath Wednesday January 21st, 2004 11:26:20 PM
Andrath smiles as Cassandra's visage responds to Alkali's animal suggestions. But his smile turns to a frown when Cassandra breaks out in tears. He moves over beside the elf maid and says, "Cassandra, you need to be strong now. We will all help you in any way that we can, but you need to calm down. Have you tried commanding out loud for the mask to leave your face?"
Then he looks at the rest of the party and says, "While we are in her presence, we will have to be careful not to say any names, either proper names or creature names."
"What about other spells that affect magic items. I know there is one that dispells magic. Maybe that might work? Also, there must be high-level spells that can be used to turn off magic items, either temporarily or permanently. Not being a magical type, I don't know what they are called, but I figure that they must exist."
He looks at Dulcet and says, "My lady, does the mask actually change her face and head into that of the creature named, or does it merely create an illusion of the visage around her head?"
Kedarn Thursday January 22nd, 2004 4:09:32 AM
Kedarn looks at Elerinn then says "Elerinn, go talk to Fergoes and talk to him about the problem that we have come across. See if he has heard of anything like this and if so what can be done about it." A few moments later Kedarn says "Lorth, you or I need to go and talk to the temple to see if they have heard anything like this and if they know what might undo the problem."
"Cassandra, try to do as Andrath suggested with trying to command the mask off." Kedarn says.
DM Bob & Carla Thursday January 22nd, 2004 7:45:40 AM
Cadmar and Andrath console the unhappy witch and a number of suggestions come forward. Lorth and Cadmar both suggest consulting the wizard, Feorges. Alkali suggests empowering the remove curse spell and Andrath suggests a number of solutions from simply commanding the mask to release, to using some higher order of magic.
Cassandra manages to control her weeping at the bequest of Andrath and in a weak and squeaky voice commands the mask to free her, alas to no effect.
Dulcet examines the mask more carefully, running her fingers over the carved animals and feeling the very grain and texture of the wood. "I believe the wood that this mask was created from was itself enchanted in some way" the leader of the coven announces, "it must come from somewhere in the Culverwood." Dulcet moves Cassandra under some better light and carefully places her two hands on the surface of the mask, "vixen" she speaks, and the mask changes into the pointy shape of a fox. Cassandra yips repeatedly until Dulcet once again calls her name. "This is no illusion" she says, "I can feel the mask change shape beneath my fingers, and it's power is almost tangible as it shifts. I have no magic that can dispell this."
Cassandra tries to speak of her experience, but only a strange warbling sound comes out as the mask exerts greater control over the witch. Cassandra falls silent in frustration.
"I do not believe that Feorges can help with this problem" Dulcet responds to Kedarn, "there is something wild and dark about this magic. Nor do I think the church holds our answers, though I wish not to offend you or your calling. I think we should seek council with Grynntym Deeproot. You know him as the Greenmage of Culverwood."
"Will you once again come to the aid of Cassandra and the Coven of Weal?"
Elerinn Thursday January 22nd, 2004 2:51:47 PM
Just when Elerinn is about to leave for Feorge's home, to ask the wizard about the mask, Dulcet states Feorges will not be able to give him the answers they need. When she mentions Grynntym, Elerinn sees the huge man's image before him, but doesn't exactly remember when they met the Greenmage. He knows it was somewhere in Culverwood though, and hopes we will be ready to travel into the forest were one of his companions died. The idea of a new goal and an adventurous journey gives him new energy, however, and the red-haired gnome decides to speak.
Elerinn steps forwards and says: "I don't know if the others agree with me, but I will, of course, help your Coven again." He pauses, looks at Cassandra and says, trying to sound as resolute as possible: "Don't worry, Cassandra, we will find a solution to free you from this cursed mask."
Alkali Thursday January 22nd, 2004 8:48:13 PM
Upon Dulcet's request, Alkali grins with glee. It will be another fun trip. Remembering his manners, he bows in respect saying, "I am still under your control, my lady." Turning over to Cassandra, Alkali promises to Cassandra that he will help where he can.
Andrath Thursday January 22nd, 2004 11:42:42 PM
"Of course I am willing to help you, Cassandra. After all, the mask never would have seen the light of day if I hadn't discovered it in that stash of treasure in the Tower of Boydos. So, we are to travel back into the forest again. It's really too bad Garrard has decided to take his leave, since the forest is definitely his element. Well Cadmar, you will just have to pick up the slack for him. I have no doubt in your ability to do that."
"Cadmar, have you managed to sell the items yet? It would be helpful to have a couple of extra items from the Catacombs before we leave for this journey."
Greg OOC Thursday January 22nd, 2004 11:52:41 PM
I will be away starting tomorrow morning, returning sometime Sunday, for my son's hockey tournament, so I might miss a post for Andrath.
Cadmar Friday January 23rd, 2004 4:22:28 AM
"Of course I will help. I was hoping to spend some time with my family, but this is more important. Cassandra is coming with us, right? Please check if everyone has warm clothes and enough food to last at least a week."
"Where exactly do we find Grynntym? Last time we sort of accidentally bumped into him. Can you tell us what kind of man he is? He seemed to be very calm and helpful, but I know that some hermit types tend to be quite, ah, erratic."
"The more I think of the treasure we found the more puzzled I am. I don't think it belonged to the Mindoses. If it was so one of them would be likely to don the mask. It could have been a leftover stash from long ago. Still, for a moment I was worried we will have to return to the Tower of Boydos..."
"Ah yes, the Catacombs transaction is complete. Here are your shares." Cadmar takes out several vouchers and gives one to Lorth, Andrath, Elerinn, and Kedarn. Each of the vouchers is for 255 gold. "I have made arrangements with the Catacombs to have Garrard's and Wynn's vouchers delivered to them."
The ranger takes out twenty empty vials and looks at the waterskins. "Somebody help me with splitting up the potions..."
[If you haven't done so please check your e-mail, we are dividing common items.]
Kedarn Friday January 23rd, 2004 6:56:35 AM
"I will give you a hand Cadmar." as Kedarn moves over to help Cadmar with the vials.
Kedarn looks to the others "Let us make sure we are all prepared for the journey in to the Culverwoods again."
"Dulcet, do you know how we can locate Grynntym Deeproot once we are in the Culverwoods?" asks Kedarn
DM Bob and Carla Friday January 23rd, 2004 7:48:12 AM
As each member of the party pledges to help Dulcet, several suggest provisioning before setting out. Cadmar, with Kedarn's assistance distributes the oils retrieved from the Tower of Boydos into vials, while Dulcet excuses herself to check on the salmonberry. Retuning from the back room with a smile on her face, the coven leader reports the plants are in good shape and all parts will be usable. She distributes the reward of a small velvet sack to each member of the group. "It contains 200 GP, the reward I promised you."
"The best way to find the Greenmage is to travel south, to the Spring of Alnair, and there wait at the gathering circle until Grynntym or a messenger arrives. The place is 1 day's journey south from Jarlswolf. It lies just off the Faerie Trail before it branches to the Spice Trail. You have been there before. It is where you last met Grynntym." Dulcet looks sadly at Cassandra, "you may need to bring this unfortunate with you, at least as far as your meeting with the Greenmage, in order that he can see the mask." She sighs, "I would suggest that you set out tomorrow morning at dawn. You have the rest of this day to prepare."
Lorth Friday January 23rd, 2004 11:02:35 AM
Lorth thanks everyone for his share of the money, and pledges his help to Cassandra. "If you will excuse me, I have some quick business to attend too. I'll be back shortly." Lorth gets up to leave and heads out the door.
(OOC: Lorth heads to the town church and donates (In the parties name) half his money to the poor box. That would leave him with 225 gold from 450. He then checks up on his mother and leaves her 100 gold, keeping 125 for himself.)
Elerinn Friday January 23rd, 2004 11:30:24 AM
Elerinn thanks the witch Dulcet when she gives him his reward, and puts the velvet sack in his backpack. He agrees with Dulcet to leave at dawn and says: "I suggest we meet in front of the adventurer's board at dawn and begin our journey to Grynntym the Greenmage."
When Elerinn asks if anyone wants to join him for a drink in the local inn, he is reminded of the fact that the last one who made this offer to him was Wynn Brightsong. He regrets that he can't accept the half-elf's offer anymore.
Cadmar Saturday January 24th, 2004 8:15:16 AM
Cadmar accepts the velvet sack and feels its pleasant weight in his hand. His eyes light up. "With this money, I have enough for the Regenerate spell for my dad! Thank you, Dulcet!"
As the road to the gathering circle is described the ranger pays careful attention. "Faerie Trail, Spice Trail..." [do these names mean anything to Cadmar? Does he think he will be able to find the spot without problems?]
"I'm off to see my family then! See you tomorrow at dawn! Be prepared for the journey!"
[There is a small risk that I might lose Internet access until next Thursday. In case it happens Cadmar will follow the group's lead.]
Andrath Sunday January 25th, 2004 11:18:27 PM
Before he can leave, Andrath grabs Lorth and says, "Here, take this 50 gp as well, to give to Hmary. I am pretty sure the church agreed to use our donated funds to help her and her children."
Then Andrath hurries to catch up with Elerinn, saying, "Let's go and hoist a few, to toast missing friends. Then I need to make a quick trip to the Catacombs, to re-outfit for the coming trip."
DM Bob & Carla Monday January 26th, 2004 7:53:55 AM
As the party prepares to leave, the witch quickly sketches a map of the way to the gathering circle at Alnair and hands it to Cadmar. She reminds him of the spot he and the group last met the greenmage. Finding the Faerie trail as it leaves south from Merrydale may be a bit tricky, but the group should have no real trouble finding their way.
The adventurer's split up, each to take care of personal business. Andrath and Elerinn share a drink in honour of lost friends before outfitting themselves for the trip. Cadmar heads home. Lorth heads to the church to make donations for himself and Andrath. All have promised to meet up at dawn by the adventurer's board.
[OOC - please have your Catacombstransactions completed by the end of this week - they can be delivered to the Spring of Alnair if you wish]
The following morning is cold. Exhaled breath forms a cloud and the wood smoke from the village hangs low in the valley, held down by the cold air. Feet and hands grow numb as you wait for the party to gather, and for the sun to rise over the surrounding hills.
Lorth Monday January 26th, 2004 8:34:08 AM
Lorth meets everyone near the adventurers board in the morning. He is wrapped up in his heavy cloak. "I sure hope it warms up a bit, seems to be getting mighty cold these days", he says to no one in particular.
Elerinn Monday January 26th, 2004 1:41:12 PM
When Elerinn arrives at the adventurer's board, he can see Lorth standing in the blistering cold. He smiles at him and says: "Morning, Lorth! Yes, it's really cold, isn't it?" Elerinn is glad he has a new cloak, for this one is a lot warmer. "I hope we will be able to bring Cassandra to the Greenmage before...something happens."
Kedarn Monday January 26th, 2004 4:41:32 PM
Walking upto the those that have allready arrived Kedarn says "morning, I hope the others are not that long in arriving so we can get going. I feel that we will want to walk at a good pace as to keep warm today."
While waiting Kedarn looks at the board to see what is posted.
Andrath Monday January 26th, 2004 11:52:48 PM
Andrath arrives at the adventurer's board, stamping his feet and rubbing his hands to keep warm. [OOC: Shades of real life, since once again, school buses didn't run today because it was too cold, about -36 degrees.] "I certainly hope the others show up soon. I think the best cure for feeling cold is to get moving, and get the blood flowing."
Cadmar Tuesday January 27th, 2004 2:37:07 AM
Cadmar shows up rubbing his hands. Small clouds of steam escape from his mouth. "All right, I'm ready. Is Cassandra here?"
Alkali Tuesday January 27th, 2004 7:10:04 AM
Yawning and stretching the entire way, Alkali walks up to the bunch and says, "Good morning!" A few seconds later, Alkali's senses wake up and he starts to hug himself and shiver a bit.
DM Bob & Carla Tuesday January 27th, 2004 7:31:07 AM
As the last of the party arrive at the adventurer's board, Kedarn checks the posted notices. Artad Bistoc is still looking for caravan guards, Halbert Jemmells still seeks a group to hunt ogres, Bobart from the Broken Cauldron continues to advertise for treasure seekers, and recruits are still sought for the guard. The tattered remains of a notice posted by the Green Dragons still clings to the board, even though the time has long since passed.
Cassandra arrives with Alkali and the party is ready to proceed. It will be a full day walk to Merrydale and then south to the head of the Faerie Trail.
A few lazy flakes of snow drift down from above.
Lorth Tuesday January 27th, 2004 9:16:28 AM
Lorth waits for the party to move out, and then falls in line.
Elerinn Tuesday January 27th, 2004 5:56:15 PM
Elerinn greets all of his companions, and when Cassandra and Alkali arrive, starts walking towards Merrydale. Because of his lenght, he is especially afraid for a thick layer of snow covering the Culverwood's ground. He silently prays to Warrd, asking for a lucky journey. Elerinn positions himself somewhere in the middle of his companions and takes Qamaro in his arms, keeping him warm somewhat.
Andrath d20+15=33 d20+11=28 Tuesday January 27th, 2004 11:33:22 PM
Andrath moves out ahead to lead the party on the roadway, keeping his eyes and ears open for trouble. [OOC: Spot roll of 33, Search roll of 28.]
Kedarn d20+5=15 d20+5=9 Wednesday January 28th, 2004 7:04:57 AM
Kedarn walks along with the party whatching the area as they travel. (spot 15, listen 9)
Cadmar Wednesday January 28th, 2004 7:26:04 AM
The man wraps his green cloak a little tighter about him, and walks along with the group. The paladin of Domi tries to take the brunt of the cold wind in order that the smaller or more sensitive members might find their trek a little easier.
DM Bob and Carla Wednesday January 28th, 2004 7:38:23 AM
Andrath takes up the position of scout, senses alert to anything out of the ordinary, while Kedarn, too, keeps his eyes and ears open. Cadmar blocks the elements for Cassandra and Elerinn, while the latter worries about the weather conditions. The group is silent as they trudge along towards Merrydale.
The day passes uneventfully. The sky is a silvery grey, blocking out any warmth from the sun. Merrydale is gained mid afternoon. Other than some curious children, and a stray dog, no one makes themselves known to Andrath's sharp eyes. Cassandra insists the group avoid the hamlet, circling it rather than going down the main street.
By early evening, the party has entered the Culverwood via the Faeirie Trail and found the small clearing at the center of which lies the spring of Alnair. A light crust of ice clings to the edge of the source.
The shadows grow long as the sun sets. It will be a cold night.
Lorth Wednesday January 28th, 2004 8:48:47 AM
Lorth starts to gather some deadwood for a fire. "We are going to need some warmth, through the night. I hope the forest doesn't mind."
Alkali d20=12 Wednesday January 28th, 2004 9:02:26 AM
Alkali looks around for any new shapes. He sends Karee, his spirit hawk, to go look for any movements in the forest. (Roll of 12 + 10 = 22 for Spot). "So... when's this guy show up?"
Cadmar Wednesday January 28th, 2004 4:05:16 PM
The ranger puts down his backpack with a sigh and stretches his back. His gaze travels to Cassandra and a grimace of pain appears on his face. He quickly conceals it by looking another way.
"I think we are still way away from the meeting place, Alkali."
"Remember what happened last time we made a camp in Culverwood? The satyrs? The fire is bound to attract some unwanted attention, but it seems we can't do without it... So, how do we set up watches?"
Elerinn Wednesday January 28th, 2004 4:06:10 PM
When Elerinn sees the spring of Alnair, he is relieved the journey is over for today. The cold has really touched the small gnome. But without Cadmar's help it would have been much worse, so he thanks his friend for his deeds. Elerinn helps Lorth collect some wood for a fire. But he makes sure every stick he collects is dead, cautious not to offend the Greenmage.
Kedarn d20+5=19 d20+5=10 Wednesday January 28th, 2004 6:46:44 PM
When the group arrives at the clearing with the spring, Kedarn will pull from his pack some rations, and some canvas. Kedarn will hand the canvas to Cadmar and ask "could you setup a simple shelter for Cassandra with this?" Kedarn will clear an area for the fire making sure to clear 10' radius around where the fire will be of all dead material so that the fire will not spread. When everyone is seated and eating Kedarn will ask "Cadmar first watch, Lorth last watch. Andrath you upto pulling a double watch (first and second), while I will take second and last? While the arcane casters can rest, but have their animal friends keep watch with the rest of us." Whit that said Kedarn will return to eating then settle down and rest untill his watch. When Kedarn is woken for his watch he will make sure the fire is banked but not out. While on his watch Kedarn will walk around just on the edge of the camp every so often and look around and listen.

Andrath d20+15=25 d20+11=23 d20+10=20 Wednesday January 28th, 2004 11:44:29 PM
Andrath answers Kedarn, "I can take a double watch if you need me to, but maybe the spell-casters can take the first and last watches. That way, they can still get an uninterrupted sleep. What do you think?" Regardless of what watches he has to take, Andrath will work to keep the fire going, and use his heightened senses to try to spot trouble. [OOC: Spot roll of 25, search roll of 23, listen roll of 20].
DM Bob & Carla d20+4=10 d20+4=7 Thursday January 29th, 2004 7:44:02 AM
Upon their arrival at the Spring of Alnair, Lorth and Elerinn gather dead wood to build a fire while Cadmar constructs a makeshift shelter for Cassandra. Unable to speak, and ashamed of her misfortune, the witch keeps her face hooded from view and retreats to the shelter. Alkali's hawk circles the opening and surrounding forest until darkness falls, and returns to its master without incident. Once the fire is lit and a meal readied, Kedarn suggests watches for the night.
The first watch is scarcely begun when Andrath notices movement in the forest and hears the sound of snow laden branches being brushed aside. Cadmar and Andrath are hailed from the forest. "Give us your purses and the pretty witch and we shall let you pass" calls the first voice. It is quickly followed by a second more cheerful voice from the other direction "unless you have wine of course." Two Satyrs make their way into the dim light cast by the glowing embers of the fire. "Lighting fires in the Culverwood...that won't go well with you-know-who" says the first. "No, not at all" says the second as he kicks the burning embers into flame and warms his hands.
Tydeus and Thalpius are clearly enjoying their little joke at the expense of the party. "Well, master elf" Tydeus looks directly at Andrath, "have you no wine to warm my toes?" Thalpius takes a peek beneath the canvas and calls to Cassandra and anyone else not yet aroused "come, join us by the fire and tell us what brings you back to the forest".
Lorth Thursday January 29th, 2004 8:03:34 AM
Lorth wakes just for a moment, but then decides to go back to sleep. He doesn't like the Satyrs much, and pulls his blanket up around his ears to drown them out.
Kedarn Thursday January 29th, 2004 4:22:03 PM
Kedarn wakes when he hears the two Satyrs talking, then calls over to them "We need to talk with Grynntym Deeproot on urgent business."
Alkali Thursday January 29th, 2004 9:29:43 PM
Alkali opens his eyes slowly to the sounds of the Satyrs calling out. He catiously looks around to see as the Satyr walk closer. "Ugh.... who are you? Is one of you the Greenmage?"
Andrath Friday January 30th, 2004 12:52:46 AM
When Andrath hears the first voice, he reaches for his sword and readies to raise the alarm. But once he hears the second voice, he settles down, and waits for the two figures to approach. "Oh, its you two again, is it? Well met, I suppose. I am afraid we don't have much time for your hijinks. We have a young lady in trouble here; some sort of magical mask has taken hold of her, and won't let her go. Dulcet, the witch in Jarlswolf, suggested we come to the Culverwood and talk to Grynntym Deeproot. And no, I didn't bring any wine. Maybe one of the others did. But you are welcome to wait with us and warm yourselves by the fire while we wait for Grynntym. Do you know how we can call for him?
"Unfortunately, our bard had to leave us, so any partying that we do now will be much more subdued."
Andrath moves closer to the now-larger fire, warming his hands and feet.
Elerinn Friday January 30th, 2004 3:55:33 AM
Elerinn awakes, slowly, from a pleasant dream and hears the familiar voices of the two satyrs. He hopes they will be as peacefull as the last time the group encountered them and really regrets Wynn is not here to soften them with his songs.
Cadmar d20+2=17 Friday January 30th, 2004 6:30:13 AM
Cadmar looks actually pleased to see the two troublemakers. "Ah, hello again. I haven't brought any wine either, but I have some food grown on the fields of the Valley I can share with you if you like."
"This is Alkali, our new companion and friend of Dulcet from the Coven of Weal."
"So, what has been happening in Culverwood lately? Is the Greenmage busy? As others said we really need to find him. Do you know where to look?"
As the satyrs make themselves comfortable around the fire and Andrath mentions the departure of Wynn, Cadmar tries to recall a song he heard long ago.
"Beyond the seas, where the moon shines O'er distant shores of land afar O'er dark land of mighty pines Where lakes catch light of every star There dragons sleep and dragons dream Visions of fire and death and ire Fear not - for deep's their restless sleep Their breath is slow and eyes are dim..."
Cadmar's quiet chanting is rhytmic and melodic, more than one would expect from a simple woodsman [Perform (untrained) 17].
DM Bob & Carla Friday January 30th, 2004 8:07:20 AM
Andrath and Cadmar welcome the two satyrs to the fire and introduce Alkali. Thadeus and Thalpius are both impressed with Cadmar's song and tell him so, although they do seem a bit concerned about the lack of wine.
Even more, they seem quite amused by the suggestion that one of them is the greenmage. "Not me" says Thadeus, "he must mean you" and he points to his companion. Thalpius puts on his sternest expression, puffs out his chest, stiffens his back, and begins lecturing the adventurer's about what can and cannot be done while in the Culverwood "...and under no circumstances will you light a fire, pick any plants, dig any holes, or injure any of the creatures you find in the forest...especially hedgehogs!"
Tears stream down Thadeus' face as he watches Thalpius strut about.
Cassandra peeks her head out from beneath the tarp to see what all the commotion is, but at the mention of hedgehogs, the mask contorts into a very pointy nose with large round eyes and short quills surrounding its edges. Cassandra emits several startled squeaks and retreats back beneath the tarp.
"Whoa! what was that?" asks Thadeus.
Andrath explains why the party has come to the Spring of Alnair and Thadeus replies that Grynntym is aware of their arrival and has sent the two of them ahead to ask you to wait untill tomorrow when he can come himself.
Thalpius peeks beneath the tarp but only sees a cloaked figure huddled beneath. "How is the mask cursed?" he asks, "What does it do?"
Lorth Friday January 30th, 2004 11:08:42 AM
"ZZZZ....ZZZZ....ZZZZ...."
Cadmar Saturday January 31st, 2004 5:57:55 AM
"Sh. Let the poor girl be. The mask can't be removed. Dulcet thinks Grynntym might know how to undo its magic." Afraid that Cassandra might fall victim of the curiosity of satyrs Cadmar doesn't mention the details of the curse.
Catacombs Clerk Vauhwyt (Guest appearance by Cayzle) Saturday January 31st, 2004 4:51:27 PM
"Hallooo! Hallooo! Is this the Spring of Alnairr?"
A high pitched voice with a distinctive accent calls from the forest and comes near. After a moment you see that it is a creature who is human above the waist and lion below, like a centaur, or rather, a liontaur.
In fact, some of the group might recognize her -- It is Vauhwyt, sometime clerk at the Catacombs, frequent patron of the Giggling Ghost, and an adventurer in Dirt City.
She takes in everybody (and looks carefully at the satyrs). "Hi you guys," she says, waving at Cadmar. "I have a delivery for Andrath." She walks over to Andrath and hands him a carefully wrapped bundle. It contains a masterwork chain shirt, a masterwork shortsword, and 40 masterwork arrows.
She says in a softer tone to Andrath, "Boy, the Catacombs has been very busy -- and making mistakes left and right! It's funny -- they undercharged you 150 gold for the sword and overcharged you 150 gold for the armor! It's a wash anyway, but you didn't hear that from me. Sorry for the inconvenience, though!"
Then she goes up to Cadmar and whispers in his ear, "Sorry about that spell for your Dad."
Elerinn Sunday February 1st, 2004 6:07:11 PM
Elerinn believes it's not a good idea to tell the satyrs about the curse, so tries to distract their attention and asks them: "How can we contact Grynntym the Greenmage?"
Andrath Sunday February 1st, 2004 7:05:29 PM
Andrath approaches Thalpius, and gently but firmly removes the tarp from his hand, and sets it back in place. "Sir, I would appreciate it if you would not disturb the lady. The mask has cursed her to have her face take on the appearance of various creatures, and we need to have it removed. She is very upset right now, and will definitely need some rest if she is to throw off the hold of the mask. However, the rest of us are willing to sit up and talk and sing with you, and maybe dance a bit, while we wait for Grynntym." The elf hopes that what he has told the two mischief-makers is enough truth to settle their curiousity.
When the large lion-human lady shows up with his items, Andrath smiles and says, "Thank you for the prompt delivery, my lady. These will be very useful. And I too noticed the errors in what was charged to me, but as you said, since the total worked out the same amount, it was not worth it to worry about making sure the correct amount was charged for each item."
Alkali Sunday February 1st, 2004 10:28:35 PM
After watching the satyrs' antics, Alkali says, "I take it your not him than..." Alkali shakes his head when Cassandra's face changes. He motions the satyrs to come away from Cassandra when they go to investigate. "Please leave her alone, she does not feel well."
When the liontaur comes by, Alkali stares at the enormus thing. "Wow... a gigantic lion human thing... it must eat so much... like 100 times my weight or something."
DM Bob & Carla Monday February 2nd, 2004 8:07:44 AM
Cadmar, Elerinn, Alkali and Andrath do their best to dissuade the two satyr's from further disturbing Cassandra while Lorth continues to feign sleep in hope that they will just go away. Andrath's ploy to divert their attention is furthered by the arrival of Vauhwyt with a Catacombs parcel and everyone gathers around to see it's contents. Thadeus and Thalpius both invite the wemic to join the evening festivities.
The two satyr's have all but forgotten Cassandra. That is until Alkali spots Vauhwyt and gushes over her obvious size and nature. At the mention of Vauhwyt's feline origins, the night air is split by the tremendous roar of a lion from beneath the canvas shelter. Unable to control herself, Cassandra roars again.
As the second roar echoes through the campsite Thalpius turns to Andrath, "seems to do a bit more than just change her appearance..."
Lorth Monday February 2nd, 2004 8:57:27 AM
Lorth sits up... "Of all the holy... Alkali, please watch what you say." Lorth moves over to Cassandra's tent, he says her name softly in an attempt to change her back to normal. (OOC: If she doesn't change back at the sound of her name, like she did before, he says the word human, in an attempt to at least change her into that.)
Elerinn Monday February 2nd, 2004 1:36:27 PM
Elerinn walks over to Cassandra's tent and hopes Lorth's words will change her back into her original form.
Kedarn Monday February 2nd, 2004 6:47:43 PM
Kedarn gets up and walks over to Thadeus and Thalpius and say "Thank you for telling us that the greenmage will be coming shortly. I am afraid that you will need to watch what you say around Cassandra right now."
Alkali Monday February 2nd, 2004 9:31:40 PM
When the roar comes out of Cassandra's tent, Alkali quickly places his hand overs his mouth. He sits down keeping his hand there staring at the fire.
Andrath Monday February 2nd, 2004 11:28:52 PM
Andrath replies to Thalpius, "Well, I guess you are right. We only knew that it affected her face and head, but apparently it changes her lungs and throat as well. As you can imagine, she is really very upset, and is having a difficult time resting. So, if you would be so kind, please avoid mentioning the names of any creatures or people in her vicinity, since that seems to trigger the magic of the mask. Did the Greenmage give you any idea as to when he might show up?"
Cadmar Tuesday February 3rd, 2004 7:38:46 AM
Cadmar is very worried. It has been only a few days since Cassandra donned the cursed mask, but its hold over her seems to grow stronger with every hour. Who in their right mind would ever create such an item?...
The ranger wonders if she will be able to hold on to her mind much longer. A grim perspective of hunt for Cassandra passes through his mind. With some effort he brushes the dark thought away.
