The mystery of the dried-out corpses

DM Jan

The Halfling Sewer -

Dietrich backs off from the obviously overwhelmed Mattison, and both he and Olyn can see the half elf struggle to restore a little confidence in himself.

The halflings all appear to shut up - turn around and look at Vauhwyt - there's a moment of silence - and they start talking animatedly again.

Theo is jostled a little as he enters the little crowd - not intentionally, its just the excitement and gesticulation is making for a boisterous group of locals.

Rose doesn't get any direct answers to her questions. However, she does overhear the following -
They're wondering if the corpse belongs to the sister-in-law of a human neighbour who lives nearby. "Thats her hat! I'm sure thats her hat!"
They're frightened for their children.
They're worried about trade.
One old fellow halfing with a pipe thinks the curse of the Crescent Moon Market has arrived in the Halfling Quarter.

Theo and Vauhwyt also pick up about half of this.

Over by the corpse, Vorelle continues her investigation. The gouges suggests something hard and strong, with a serrated edge, was slammed hard into the tunnel wall.
As for the hole in the victim's chest, it looks perfectly round, and it's about 6" deep, maybe 1" wide. There seems to be some kind of clear mucus at the entry point.

The birds look on. Lain's owl blinks and turns its head this way and that, taking things in.

Olyn talks to Mattison and explains why the group is here. The other half elf blinks furiously, and takes a deep breath.
"I'm -m -m - sorry," he blurts to the Warddian cleric. "Not good with people. Orgar, you say. Alright then."
He nods toward Dietrich, perhaps to reassure the warrior there was no harm done.
"I've no idea who could have done this," he says after another breath. "I'm thinking magic, bad magic. After all - what weapon could do this? And its happened before... This is the third one I've seen, and they all look the same - dried to a husk. The only thing they seem to have in common, and I'm not 100% sure - they all died early in the morning, or late at night - when its quiet."

The Crescent Moon Market -

The jeweler opens his mouth and is about to elaborate, when -
WHAP! - Devlin slaps Zayne on the cheek.
Right after that, a tall, long-limbed man storms up to the three. He stands around 6' 3", his grey hair is unkempt and sticking out at all angles, and it looks as though his clothes havent been laundered for quite a while.

"NOOOOOOOOO!! You - you - YOU - YOU - OHHHHHH!!" the man growls, shaking a fist at Devlin.
"DO you KNOW how RARE that was?? Have you ANY idea how long it took to - ah, why do I bother. I'm surrounded by peasants and blithering IDIOTS!"

And with that - he turns his back and stomps off.

The jeweler has a smirk on his face as he watches the strange man walk away.

an you take us to where the other 2 murders occured?

going up to Vauhwyt. let us go see where the other 2 murders took place, then go to the temple. let us be there when they speak with the dead to see if anything can be learned from that. and lets check the morgue in the temple to see what they find out about what may have killed these poor folks.

Vauhwyt and Mookie  d20-2=13 d20+5=23
Monday February 2nd, 2004 10:19:04 AM

When the small folk give her the cold shoulder, Vauhwyt can do nothing but stand dumbfounded. Mookie's sharp ears hear the older halfling mention the Crescent Moon Market. "Hey Boss!" Mookie whispers, "That Market place is one of the spots Orgar talked about! Maybe we should pump this geezer for more dirt. Here, I'll start off, nice like."

Mookie flaps over to the old halfling and tries something foreign to his nature -- being polite. "Uh, excuse me, elder fellow, but could you please talk to my boss about this curse thing?" [OOC: Mookie's roll to aid another (untrained Diplomacy check) succeeds with a 13, giving Vauhwyt a +2 on the roll]

Vauhwyt, getting a hold of herself, follows Mookie and addresses the halfling respectfully. "Yes, sirr, what can you tell us about this curse? Please hold nothing back, since lives could be at stake." [Vauhwyt's aided untrained Diplomacy check is a 23]

After hearing the older halfling out, Vauhwyt listens to Olyn and agrees. "We have to visit the other locations. But first we have to set things right herre, and we should also think about connecting with Devlin, Zayne, and Lain. With a monster killer on the loose, I think it best if we stick togetherr."

She turns to Rose. "Rose, could you find out where the relative of this poor victim lives? We have to get the body into the hands of family. We can't just leave it out here in public view."

Vauhwyt also notices that Vorelle's sharp eyes are catching details. She nods approvingly, but leaves the ranger to work uninterrupted.

Looking at the gagly man walk away,"Now there goes an interesting person." Then back to the jewler,"You were saying before these interuptions." Throwing a quick look at Devlin.

Devlin  d20+3=17 d20+3=9 d20+2=18
Monday February 2nd, 2004 3:47:39 PM

Devlin gives first Zayne and then the jeweler a look of confusion as he tries to figure out what the man's problem is. Figuring the best thing to do is to go to the source, he steps away from the jeweler and calls out the man, "Excuse me, kind sir." He'll catch up with the man and tap him on the shoulder if necessary to get his attention.

"Sir, you seemed upset at something that happened with my friend and I. Would you mind sharing what the problem was? What was it that I killed?"

Devlin will try to get the man to talk with him, using his best diplomatic skills at his disposal. He will seek to change the man's attitude toward them (diplomacy 17), gather some information (9 doh!) and try to determine if the man might be up to something (sense motive: 18).

Theodore and Macaw
Monday February 2nd, 2004 8:23:10 PM

Theodore stands by Rose in support, but doesn't know what else to do against the babbling crowd. Macaw has had enough and flies off to a perch a safer distance away.

Dietrich
Monday February 2nd, 2004 9:12:08 PM

Dietrich listens to Mattisons explanation and can´t make much about it. Theodore said there is no magic on the corpse, so what could have had this strange effect?
"Somekind of poison, maybe? Or old, mundane boiling water? The case is really weird."
He is satisfied with the general efforts to gather information and will accompany the party to the temple.

Vorelle  d20+6=18
Monday February 2nd, 2004 9:51:18 PM

Vorelle studies the wound carefully. It reminds her vaguely of how certain insects strike their prey--only much, much bigger. She tries to imagine what kind of creature may have done this (Knowledge Nature 18).

She also collects a small sample of the substance she sees near the wound. Perhaps an alchemist can figure out what it is.

Halfling Market -

Answering Olyn's question, Mattison brings out a crumpled piece of paper.
"Well...." he reads from his notes. "Dwarf lantern lighter in the Garotte Sewer. That was the first. Then an unknown person down in the Princes Sewer, and now this! It doesn't make any sense unless the murderer can roam free anywhere, and as for the victims, there isn't a connection, that I can see."

Rose and Theo manage to get the home details of the deceased - a haberdashery store in the Merchants Quarter.

An elderly halfling with rosy cheeks and a pipe looks between Mookie and Vauhwyt for a moment, and then says -
"The curse? Aaaaah........ something you folk haven't heard about, eh? Well, settle down and let me tell you.
"It was a dark night in the Crescent Moon Market, and -"

A female halfling, about as old as he is, nudges him in the ribs.
"Just tell it straight, will you, you old fool?"

"Eh - alright then. Started about a year ago. Folk went missing. Not so many that you'd get into a panic mind you, but enough. Then they found a body. Sucked dry it was - just like this one!"
The man waves his pipe, nearly knocking Vauhwyt on the kneecap with it.
"They reckoned about 10 people went missing. I know who'd done it, too. Vampires, it was - came in from the wilds and sucked them all dry. All fangs and horrible eyes. Who else could have done that?"

His female companion rolls her eyes.

Dietrich gets ready to move, and Vorelle attempts to take a sample of the mucus she found on the corpse.
(Kathy, could you let me know how you collected the sample and what you put it in? Is Vorelle wearing gloves? Did she touch any of it?)

Crescent Moon Market -

The jeweler smirks, and says to Devlin.
"Don't mind him. He's the market's equivalent of the village idiot. Actually, I heard he's quite clever - an Enty..... Enta.. aww heck, whatever it is. He's harmless enough.
"Now where were we? Oh yes. There were some deaths around here about a year ago - all crisped up. But then they stopped. Just like that."
The man shrugs.

Devlin catches up with the tall gangly man who, after Devlin's words seem to catch his interest, gives a sigh.
"THAT -" he says with exaggerated patience, "- was a white headed swamp mosquito - VERY rare, quite beautiful, distinguished by the bold white dots on either side of its head...."
The man starts to go on, and on, getting more animated, and Devlin gets the impression he's about to get quite an education in mosquitoes.

Dietrich
Tuesday February 3rd, 2004 5:58:00 AM

The fighter begins to put the pieces of that riddle together and is astonished with the idea of gigantic vampire insects succking people dry. He instinctively puts his hands on the sword shaft and remembers all times he´s been stinged by nasty flys. "Verfluchte Mücken!" Though, he´ll wait to see, and accompanies the group to the temple

Theodore and Macaw
Tuesday February 3rd, 2004 3:30:05 PM

"Vampires!" Theodore is startled by the old halfling's story. "But they don't exist. Just a fairy tale." The young mage harumphs and folds his arms over his chest to show that he was having none of it.

Devlin
Tuesday February 3rd, 2004 4:35:06 PM

Devlin's eyebrows raise at the mention of the swamp mosquito. Just as the man is about to launch into his discourse, the young fighter interrupts him. "Excuse me sir, but this is fascinating stuff. If I may ask though, how would this one that I just killed have gotten into the city? What is their general habitat? I believe that's the word one in your position uses?"

Devlin tries to play up to the man's obvious expertise, faking that he truly cares about the topic and trying to steer it as much as possible to information about these creatures, where they are from, how big they grow, does their bite cause injury, and do they carry any type of poison or disease?

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Tuesday February 3rd, 2004 6:12:09 PM

"Well, we do know that there are ghouls. And if there are ghould, why not vampires?" Vauhwyt seems willing to believe in things that drain one's life away. "But I think we should go get Lain and then meet with the others."

Vorelle
Tuesday February 3rd, 2004 6:34:30 PM

Vorelle is not wearing gloves, but wants to handle the substance carefully. After a moment's thought, she extracts a silver coin from her pouch and uses it to scrape up a glob of whatever the substance is.

Holding her prize gingerly out in front of her, she goes over to Rose, whom she thinks is most likely to have this sort of thing about her.

"R-R-Rose, d-do you have a v-v-v-vial?"

rose
Tuesday February 3rd, 2004 11:30:05 PM

Rose lets the others know where the man lived. "Someone needs to inform his family." she says looking while at Olyn.

At Vorelle's question she frowns "No I dont think so....Wait a minute will this do?" she says as she pulls out a thimble that she hands over.

Halfling Market -

Mattison says -
"If you folks are off to do some more investigating, then can I come with you?"

((Where to next, folks? Temple and the other corpses laid to rest there?))

The halflings seem satisfied with their explanation of vampires, and are soon passing around theories amongst themselves regarding protection. A shrewd marketeer would no doubt stock up on garlic if overhearing any of this conversation.
They do offer to see to the body, and carry it to the Temple.

Vorelle and Rose manage to get the mucus inside the thimble.

Knives Tower -
Lain gets the sense of some kind of commotion finally calming down.

Crescent Moon Market -

The gangly man looks at Devlin as though he's some kind of specimen to be studied for a moment, and then says -
"This mosquito came from Culver... hmm, perhaps I shouldn't say more. The more superstitious frown upon the magic forests. They're afraid of what lies within. Anyway - this paticular specimen is relatively harmless from what I can tell, but of course now that you've squashed it -"
The man twitches irritably.
"- we'll never really know. Insects are beautiful, misunderstood. A great study," he adds proudly.

It's approaching lunchtime.

Dietrich
Wednesday February 4th, 2004 6:05:52 AM

Dietrich feels his stomach crumbling and proposes to the group to get some food and then go to the Temple, as Olyn said before.

"Let´s go. We´ve things to analyze and I´m hungry like a bear. Some of the halflings standing around could inform the family of the most recent victim."

Also, he agrees with Mattison accompanying them in the investigations.

Olyn
Wednesday February 4th, 2004 8:57:26 AM

lets go to the temple first.
then lunch.

trust me, where we are going, you dont want to have a full stomach.

or better yet, Vorelle and I will head to the temple. she can have her stuff analyzed by the specialists there and we can see what they've got to offer in the way of information.

we will meet back at the apartment in 1 hour for lunch. you guys go get Lain and the others. compare what notes you have so far, then go from there.

*turning to Mattison*
of course you may come. we would appreciate the help of another investigator.

Devlin
Wednesday February 4th, 2004 2:06:30 PM

With his stomach rumbling from hunger at the approach of lunchtime, Devlin has a brainstorm as he considers continuing the discussion with the plan.

"Truly fascinating stuff," he says as he puts his arm around the man and tries to lead him back to Zayne and the jeweler. "I feel so stupid for killing the little thing now. I'd like to know more about them and your work." He then stops, his eyebrows raising as if just having a brilliant idea before saying, "The lunch hour approaches, perhaps you would like to join my friend and I for a meal and to talk over your work in greater detail?"

Not one to believe much in coincidences, Devlin wonders if the man might be able to enlighten them in some way about the strange murders in the city. Either way, he didn't feel it was quite time to say good-bye to the strange man.

Theodore and Macaw
Wednesday February 4th, 2004 7:10:46 PM

"I would also like to go with you to the temple, Olyn. If that is okay with you, of course. I don't mean to intrude." Theodore will go with Olyn if the cleric gives the okay, otherwise he will accompany the others.

Vorelle
Wednesday February 4th, 2004 10:08:17 PM

Vorelle carefully wraps the thimble in a scrap of cloth and holds it in her hand. She willingly accompanies the others to the temple, eager to find out what might be learned.

The Temple -

A few of the halflings accompany the group to the Temple of Wardd with the body, and some of the clerics there give Olyn a nod of recognition and lead the group to a anteroom just off the mortuary.

There lie the other two bodies.
A whiff of decay greets everyone's nostrils.

"So, we have another one?" asks a short, middle aged, male human cleric who introduces himself as Sanden.

The Market -

Mr Gangly shakes his head at Devlins proposition.
"I need to get back to my research!" he announces grandly, and will attempt to extricate himself, and go.

The jeweler looks at Devlin like he's daft.
"Your friend alright?" he asks Zayne. "Lunch with that guy would be bug juice and moth sandwiches."

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Thursday February 5th, 2004 5:44:54 AM

Vauhwyt goes to lunch with Dietrich -- as always, she enjoys the biggest haunch opf meat available in the house. Then she goes (with Dietrich?) to gather Lain, and then to meet up at the Temple.

Dietrich
Thursday February 5th, 2004 7:51:36 AM

Although everybody goes to the temple and he is curious too, the fighter goes to lunch with Vauhwyt. They should have waited for the others, but who knows if they´ll want to eat anything after their visit at the mortuary.

Dietrich admires the predator like woman eating her meat and accompanies her with a nice bloody steak, fresh bread and a bottle of red wine.
"So, what do you think about all of that?"
After that, he goes to gather Lain.

Olyn
Thursday February 5th, 2004 8:41:51 AM

Sanden, I assume by that response that you are familiar with these murders. Is there anything you can tell us about how these people were killed?

Has anyone attempted to gain information through the speak with dead spell?

Any and all information that you can give to us, that would help up ascertain who or what is doing this and bring a speedy end to it, would be greatly appreciated.

Theodore and Macaw
Thursday February 5th, 2004 12:41:03 PM

Theodore accompanies the group to the temple so that he may view the other bodies. Macaw decides that he would much rather prefer lunch and flies off in search of exactly that.

After Sanden has introduced himself, Theodore bows slightly, not knowing the proper etiquette for a priest, and provides his own name. "As Olyn has said, we are looking into any connections between these murders. I suppose we can start by seeing whether the method of their demise was the same?"

Theodore peers at the other two bodies to see whether the appear to have died the same way as the newest victim.

rose
Thursday February 5th, 2004 2:07:28 PM

Jan, what temple did we go to before? when we thought we might have a disease? And what temple are we at now?

Devlin
Thursday February 5th, 2004 3:10:59 PM

Before the man can go, Devlin asks him for his name and where his shop is. With that information, he will let the man go and then head back to Zayne and the jeweler.

Zayne
Thursday February 5th, 2004 4:14:53 PM

In resposne to the jewler's question,"Yes he's fine. Did you mean the bodies were dried up when you found them?"

Rose
Thursday February 5th, 2004 7:22:35 PM

Rose turns away from the sight and smell of the bodies feeling sick. She sees her aunt Darstine and sneaks up to her from behind, covers aunt dar's eyes with her hands and says "Guess who" making her voice sound really gruff. Then she gives her aunt a big hug "Hi Auntie Dar." Rose looks around and doesn't see her brother "Where Ian?" she asks. After finding out about her brother she starts asking questions about the murder victims.

Vorelle
Thursday February 5th, 2004 9:42:07 PM

Vorelle takes a deep breath and braces herself for the task that must be done.

"S-s-s-s-sir," she says to Sanden, "D-d-d-d-d-d--" she takes another breath and tries again. "D-d-d-do y-you ha-ave an a-a-a-lchemist?"

((OOC - some of you have bought items this last week from the Catacombs. Seeing as we're all in the City right now - if you post something along the lines of calling in at certain stores, as you go about your investigations, then we'll take it as read, that your characters now have these items in the game.))

Vauhwyt and Dietrich head off for a bite to eat, and Mookie finds it has company in the form of Macaw and Arrogoth the owl.
Afterwards, they - and birds, find Lain sat where they left him, near the Knives Tower, studying furiously. He looks safe and sound.

Over at the Temple of Wardd - Olyn, Theo, Rose (and her bird?) and Vorelle, who've decided to save their stomachs, get down to business.

Sanden shares what he knows, but not until he's had a look at the body the Halflings have brought in -

"Being honest? We've no idea who or what could have done this. We haven't come across any monster that could do it - not from around here anyway, unless its a rare Marteaun abomination, so thats a possibility, OR - and this is our favourite theory right now - its some kind of new spell. Something we haven't seen, that leaves no trace.

"Funny you should mention the dead spell. We tried that - once. All the corpse said was -
'It's beautiful...'
That's all we got. Oh - and then we had a visit from a Gargulian Soulseeker. Have you ever met one of those people? You don't want to. All white eyes and clouds of smoke. They smell funny, too. She told us we shouldn't be doing any talking to the dead. Said it was Gargul territory. She was MOST insistant."

Theo's own check of the bodies reveals a similar central wound to the chest, and overall, they all look as though every drop of moisture has been extracted. He finds Mattison keenly looking over his shoulder, and scribbling on a notepad.

Vorelle is referred to a skinny old human fellow by the name of Elijah, who's a herbalist, mainly because he's the only "-ist" in the building right now.
"Yes, my dear?" he asks. "Now don't be shy."

Rose starts to wonder if she should have ever mentioned the murders to her aunt - who starts to verbally box her ears about young halflings not getting involved with such things. It's a scolding borne of concern, and she seems to know nothing more than the other clerics.

MEANWHILE -

Over on the Crescent Moon Market - Devlin learns that the strange man's name is Kernorn, and his 'laboratory' is a few passageways away from the jeweler.

As for the jeweler, he nods at Zayne's question.
"Sort of dried. Maybe half shrivelled."
Two young women approach the store and begin to look through a strand of bracelets.
"Ladies!" exclaims the jeweler with a big, cheesy smile, his attention focussed totally now on potential customers.

Olyn

where can this Soulseeker be found?

When Dietrich meets Lain, he says to him and Vauhwyt:
"So, as everything is allright, I´m going to pick up something special I´ve bought. It´s a really great weapon, made by a true master! (Dietrich is very enthusiasticaly about it) We´ll meet at the temple. See you."

Vauhwyt and Mookie

Vauhwyt greets lain and asks him if he is finished. "We are gathering at the Temple of Ward," she tells him. "So come along with Mookie and me, or join us when you are able."

Vauhwyt heads over to the Temple and rejoins her companions. She is a little worried that the group has not heard from Zayne and Devlin. "I hope they are well."

Devlin
Friday February 6th, 2004 5:20:00 PM

As the jeweler moves on, Devlin looks to Zayne and says, "So what do you think? Did you get anything from him?" Hearing another rumble in his stomach, he nudges his friend and says, "Let's talk as we make our way to the inn. I need a meal to talk things over." The young man will walk with his friend to the Blue Eel to eat and discuss their options.

DM Jan
Monday February 9th, 2004 12:38:13 AM

After their visit to the Crescent Moon Market, Zayne and Devlin get a bite to eat, and as they're heading back up toward the market, and after picking up something for Zayne, they see Vauhwyt and Mookie, and presumably Lain and Arrogoth heading north toward the Temple.
Macaw has already flapped off in the Temple's direction.
Dietrich has gone on a quick errand before also going to the Temple.
The group could well arrive at the Temple in the next few minutes.

Meanwhile, at the Temple -

Elijah peers at the thimble offered by Vorelle.
"Oh!" he exclaims after a moment, and his face breaks into a wide grin. He smears a little of the 'stuff' onto his little finger, and then digs his thumb nail into the digit's flesh.
"Heh, exactly the same as before. Totally numb. Go on - try it - it'll last about an hour. Now how strange is that?"

While Rose successfully uses her young halfling charm on her aunt, Macaw flaps through a window and lands on Theodore's shoulder, as the young mage ponders over who might be at the back of all this.
Piper sqwawks in recognition.

Sanden continues his discussion with Olyn.
"The Soulseeker? She's staying at the Castle of the Prince of Thieves. I think she's from New Elenna originally."

Mattison continues to examine the bodies.
"Hey!" He yells, making some of the nearby clerics jump. "Has someone got a pair of tweezers?"

Olyn
Monday February 9th, 2004 8:14:27 AM

goes over to Mattison.

Dietrich
Monday February 9th, 2004 8:47:42 AM

Dietrich is arriving at the temple, marching fast and hard with the heavy boots, helmet on his head. He holds the new bow in his hands and is eager to see its effects in battle.

He greets his friends when he meets them and asks what they have discovered till now.

Theodore and Macaw  d20+5=9
Monday February 9th, 2004 9:49:51 AM

Theodore doesn't notice Macaw until the huffy bird nips at his ear. "Ouch!" exclaims Theodore as he turns his attention to his familiar. Seeing the big black bird perched on his shoulder and his beady eyes staring into the wizard's gives him quite a start. He jumps as if Macaw weren't a raven but rather a large hairy spider.

Realizing his mistake, Theodore puts a shaking hand over his forehead. Macaw cries in indignation as he settles on the window sill.

"I'm sorry, Macaw," Theodore says to the bird. Macaw cocks his head to one side to get a better look at his master. "I need you to do something for me. I want you to go about and keep an eye out for anyone with any physical defects or diseases. I have a hunch that we might be looking for servants of Marteaus. Keep me updated."

Macaw bobs his head and hops out the window.

(Spot check for Macaw = 9)

Vorelle
Monday February 9th, 2004 12:29:21 PM

"N-n-n-numb?" Despite the invitation, Vorelle does not sample the goo. "Wh-wh-what's it m-m-m-m-made f-from?"

Vauhwyt and Mookie

Vauhwyt says hello to Zayne, Lain, and Devlin. "Let's get to the temple to see if the others have discovered anything."

She also asks, "What did you all discover? We found another body!" The liontaur brings everyone up to date about everything she knows.

DM Jan
Tuesday February 10th, 2004 1:02:59 AM

Vauhwyt, Lain, Dietrich, Zayne and Devlin, plus creatures, arrive at the Temple of Wardd -

JUST IN TIME! - to see Mattison the half elf carefully pull out a small object from a grisly, dried-up body laid on a table.

He places it carefully in a dish so everyone can inspect it. The thing is quite narrow, black, and slightly curved - around 3" in length, and looks organic.

Elijah ponders Vorelle's question.
"Not sure yet, but it's water-based, a bit like saliva almost I'd say - a saliva that carries one heck of an anaesthetic."

Macaw flies off and out of the window.

Olyn
Tuesday February 10th, 2004 9:34:39 AM

Sanden, whatcha make of this thing Mattison just found?

looks like a stinger or a sucker of some sort.

Dietrich
Tuesday February 10th, 2004 9:43:17 AM

Dietrich watches the experts analyzing the bodys and waits for their conclusions abaout the evidence.
He thinks for himself too and says in his militarily way:

"It seems for me that the 'murderer' is somekind of monster.
1)The victims don´t have conections which point to a rational motive, like money or power etc. 2)There was no magic on them, but this organic thing and this strange 'stuff' that numbs you, this saliva, probably somekind of natural poison. 3)So, I conclude for a predator.

4)Consequently, I´d suggest that we trap it. It searches its victims in certain areas and at certain times. We should wait for it at the right place and hour and catch it.(or kill it)"

The fighter gets excited with the perspective of a hunt.

Vorelle
Tuesday February 10th, 2004 10:59:46 AM

"S-s-s-saliva?" Vorelle repeats thoughtfully. She had been thinking about insects, but now this sounded more like a..."S-s-s-snake?" she asks Elijah.

Without waiting for an answer, she moves to examine the organic object that was pulled from the body. She looks to see whether it is hollow, like a serpent's tooth.

Theodore  d20+8=12 d20+8=18
Tuesday February 10th, 2004 11:49:55 AM

Theodore moves with Vorelle to examine the object found by Mattison. When he has a chance, he picks it up and fingers it thoughtfully, running his eyes over the tool, and even goes so far as to smell it.

(Looking to see whether this was once attached to something else, like a claw or a tooth. Is is sharp? Does it come to a point like a tooth or a claw? Also, if it helps, he makes a knowledge check (Arcana) = 12 and a knowledge check (Local) = 18)

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Tuesday February 10th, 2004 6:00:20 PM

The liontaur gets excited as Dietrich speaks. "You have a good head therre, friend! Yes, a bug hunt is what is called for! Maybe we can stake out a likely place, lay an ambush, and pounce! I volunteer to be bait!"

Mookie looks alarmed at the last sentence. "Boss, hey, wait! Is that such a good idea?"

DM Jan
Wednesday February 11th, 2004 1:07:01 AM

Sanden looks completely baffled.
"If thats a stinger, can you imagine how big its owner must be?"
He peers at the object along with everyone else. "It has to be HUGE!"

Vorelle and Theo take a closer look.
The object doesn't look hollow, but it's quite hard, light, and tough. Not a tooth, at least not like any tooth seen before, but its slightly hooked, like a barb, and seems to have been torn away from something at the blunt end.

Theo finds that the smell of the object relates very closely to that of the body it came from. That - plus a mass of confusing images from Macaw as he tries to relay info from every disabled or diseased person he comes across is quite disorienting.

Elijah says -
"Might be a snake - if we're talking creatures, or monsters," his eyes glance toward Dietrich for a second, acknowledging the warrior's suggestion. "Or - a giant bat, a monster mosquito. I've heard even bed bugs inject something into the victim. The victim can't feel anything, and it enables the bug to feed at leisure. Hmm...."
The cleric stares at the body on the slab, then paces in thought.
"Giant bed bug...." His shoulders begin to shake - then stop. "Sorry."

Despite the bizarre notion - could Dietrich be correct? Is a monster preying on the citizens of Dirt City, and if so - what is it?

Is a bug hunt on the cards, as Vauhwyt suggests?

Devlin tells everyone at this point about the strange encounter he and Zayne had with the weird guy in the Crescent Moon Market.
"Perhaps this man might be able to tell us more. He seemed to know a heck of a lot about mosquitoes."

Zayne also adds that from the information they gathered, other deaths had occurred months before, over at the Market, but had stopped.

What now?

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Wednesday February 11th, 2004 5:47:22 AM

The liontaur listens intently to the story of the Mosquito-Loving Bug Expert.

"That's the fellow for us! Let's go visit him, and bring our organic samples along with!"

Vauhwyt pauses for a moment to think, her head tilted at an odd angle as her brain works overtime.

"It does seem a strange coincidence. Just as we conclude that we seek a gigantic monster mosquito, we also just happen to run into a mosquito expert."

Mookie adds, "That's a bit creepy."

"Maybe we should find out more about this bug expert," Vauhwyt says. "Some discreet inquiry seems to be in orderr. And I still think a bug hunt tonight is a good idea."

She asks if anyone knows if all the deaths ocurred at the same time of day -- dawn, dusk, night, day? "Aren't normal mosquitoes most bitey at dawn and dusk?"

Olyn
Wednesday February 11th, 2004 8:13:41 AM

agreeing with Vauhwyt.

let us make haste and fins this mosquito expert and see what he may have to add to all of this. and yes, bring that thing and the mucus with us. I have a feeling this man will be able to shed light on both.

Theodore
Wednesday February 11th, 2004 9:35:24 AM

Theodore places the "stinger" back in the dish which Mattison had originally placed it in. He then sends out an message to his familiar, Macaw, to also keep his eyes peeled for any large insects or places where such a large insect might nest.

"Let's go, then," says Theodore as he holds the dish with the "stinger" in it.

Dietrich
Wednesday February 11th, 2004 5:00:32 PM

Dietrich agrees with Vauhwyt too, including the excitement part about the hunt. His adrenalin rises in expactation of some action.

"Lets get infos about this strange bug man, and than talk with him. We need to know our enemy to prepare our trap."

While marching with his friends, the warrior also says:
"Theo reminded me something. If this is somekind of insect-monster, it probably has a breeding place, where others of its kind grow. So, If we are going to lay an ambush to it, we shouldn´t kill it before we know where the nest lies, or this 'moon curse' will continue appearing periodicaly.

You wizard guys, do you have any idea how to trap the monster and find the nest?"

Vorelle
Wednesday February 11th, 2004 9:20:02 PM

Vorelle carefully retrieves her thimbleful of junk and makes ready to follow the others. She is still lost in thought.

Not a snake, then. Perhaps a spider...?

DM Jan
Thursday February 12th, 2004 12:51:54 AM

Mattison tells Vauhwyt -
"The deaths happened in the early morning, from what I've been able to find out."

And so - the group (and Mattison) set off through the underground passages of Dirt City. It's a normal afternoon, with folk going about their business, unaware of any potential danger lurking, waiting to pounce and suck them dry.

Devlin and Zayne lead the way back to the Crescent Moon Market which isnt too far away. They follow the jewelers instructions, and soon - the group is stood 20 yards down a 5ft wide passageway with no other branches.
Straight ahead is a dead end, unless you wanted to lift a circular grid and descend into the sewer proper. The passage walls and ceilings are painted with a swirl of black and blue leaves, and amongst them, are life-like images of flies, beetles, butterflies and spiders.
To the left - about 20ft away from the dead end - is a slightly ajar door, painted in green. There's a brass plaque, badly in need of a shine, which reads ENTOMOLOGIST.

There's a waft of humid heat coming through the door, and the sound of someone talking quietly. Devlin seems to think its the voice of the man they're looking for.
"His name's Kernorn," he whispers. "Lets be careful, I think he's a bit crazed."

Vauhwyt the Paranoid and Mookie (Blood Armor)
Thursday February 12th, 2004 10:31:11 AM

Vauhwyt has a bad feeling about this. She really had thought they should check out this guy before knocking on the door. But, well, here they were, so better safe than sorry.

She quickly casts a spell before the bug guy can answer the door. She and Mookie both turn bright arterial red, head to toe, completely colored.

"Good way to avoid standing out in a crowd, Boss," says Mookie.

"Hush Mookie," Vauhwyt says. "We already stood out in this crowd, so what difference does that make? I want the protection."

Theodore
Thursday February 12th, 2004 12:20:36 PM

Theodore waits with the others at Kernorn's door. He gives Vauhwyt an appraising eye for her magical talent. Then he returns his attention to the door, the dish and specimen held in his hands before him.

rose
Thursday February 12th, 2004 11:56:03 PM

ooc: sorry i havent been posting, i have a bad cold. It seems to be getting better so hopefully i'll be able to post.

Rose calms her aunt down and introduces her to piper before giving her a big hug and leaving with the rest. She remains with the others half running to keep up with them. She stops so quickly when Vauhwyt turns herself red that she almost falls down. "Vauhwyt what did you do to yourself?"

DM Jan
Friday February 13th, 2004 12:52:25 AM

A tall, gangly man with hair stuck out at all angles and wearing a scruffy smock comes to the door.
Zayne and Devlin will both recognise him as being Kernorn.

"What?" he says gruffly, glaring at Olyn before his eyes move toward Vauhwyt - who's already startled Rose and Vorelle.
"I don't want any red lions today, thank you! Try the tavern."

But then his eyes narrow as they alight on Devlin.
"You! Alright, what do you people want? Can't you see I'm bus..."

Kernorn's voice trails off. His voice turns silky.
"What's that you've got there, then?"
A long bony finger points at the dish Theodore carries.

Everyone can see beyond the open door, into a gloomy room whos walls are lined with tanks of various sizes. Heat and humidity waft out into the passageway, along with a sweet smell.
The smell attempts to jog Zayne's memory.

Dietrich sees no other folk on the passage, and can hear the sewer running below everyone's feet.

Theodore blinks at the man's appearance and then follows Kernorn's gesture to the dish that he is currently holding. "Oh, this? We don't know exactly what it is. We were hoping that you might be able to shed some light on it."

Theodore plucks the "stinger" from the dish and offers it to Kernorn for observation.

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Friday February 13th, 2004 3:00:22 PM

Is there the slightest coppery tang in the air? It is hard to say if Vauhwyt's Blood Armor has the faintest smell of blood, or if it is just the eye fooling the nose.

The liontaur and her raven observe the scene, saying nothing. Vauhwyt leans on her spear like a staff, but in fact she is tense and ready to use the weapon.

Rose might get an idea that Vauhwyt is nervous: her tail, swishing back and forth, strikes the halfling a glancing blow.

Looking quickly behind her, Vauhwyt laughs a nervous fast giggle. "Sorry, Rose," she says in her usual soprano voice.

DM Jan
Sunday February 15th, 2004 11:51:35 PM

'Yes, yess... come in, come in," beckons the odd man to Olyn and the others, and his attention is soon absorbed by the 'stinger' thingy given to him by Theodore.

Stepping inside Kernorn's domain feels like steeping into a humid, sub-tropical forest - very warm, very humid. Zayne remembers the scent he can smell - wild honeycomb.
Rows of shelves line all four walls. On the shelves are boxes, tanks and cages. Two tables also hold various containers - and in the containers - insects.
Butterflies with wings of brilliant hues - a full row of them, organised in a perfect rainbow colour spectrum.
In cages - fat, bright green grasshoppers, and some grey uglier cousins.
Tanks full of flies. One tank containing what looks like a full, working beehive.
Spiders, suspended on webs - waiting.
It's bug heaven, or hell - depending on your point of view.

Dietrich spots a box next to his feet. It's about a foot square, with airholes poked in it. It's moving, shaking slightly - and a strange buzzing sound is coming from the inside. There are six other, similar boxes nearby.

After a little while -
"This -" says Kernorn, holding up the 'stinger' "- looks like a barb. The kind you find on the end of a proboscis. Heh, it works like a hook, that can retract - OR - a stinger can sometimes hold one of these - like on a bee sting - but those don't retract. They can kill the bee by ripping its abdomen in half when... but this is abstract. I mean - the insect would have to be HUGE!!"
He blinks at the group.
"Where did you get it?"
"What else have you got?"

Vorelle
Monday February 16th, 2004 1:16:30 AM

Insects per se don't really bother Vorelle, but she does have a healthy respect for anything that can injure, and some of these beauties are poison. She is careful where she steps.

When Kenorn asks what else they have, she silently proffers the thimble.

Olyn
Monday February 16th, 2004 9:32:48 AM

awaits Kernorn's observation of the mucus.

what is a Proboscis?

Dietrich
Monday February 16th, 2004 12:24:25 PM

Dietrich enters the hot room full of insects and doesn´t feel confortable at all. He sweats in his heavy armour and will be glad to leave the crazy man´s office soon.
When he spots the box, he carefully takes a look on it, paying attention not to be biten or stingered.
He continues listening to Kernons explanation about the monster.

Theodore
Monday February 16th, 2004 12:49:01 PM

"It's a good thing Macaw isn't here," Theodore thinks to himself. "All these bugs must seem like a buffet to him." He eyes Vauhwyt and Rose's birds with a gleam in his eye.

The multi-colored assortment of insects and arachnids doesn't seem to bother Theodore. Having grown up with a wizard, he has seen weirder things than this before.

"I believe that a proboscis is like an extended nose," he looks to Kernorn for confirmation. "If I'm not mistaken. Butterflies would use one to suck up flower nectar. Mosquitoes would use one to suck blood."

rose
Monday February 16th, 2004 2:17:53 PM

Rose is a bit tired from the long run. She holds Vauhwyt's tail still for a minute. "What's in the boxes?"

Vauhwyt and Mookie  d20+7=14
Monday February 16th, 2004 9:59:23 PM

Mookie does eye the assorted vermin with an eager eye. "Polly want an insect?" he caws.

Vauhwyt pays him no heed but does look around as well. She has a special interest in spiders, scorpions, and snakes.

She tells the bug expert about the deaths that have recently ocurred. She explains that the group suspects some giant creature to be the cause. "We came to you because you are known as the most knowledgeable person in Dirt City in these matters," she bluffs (check 14). "We hoped that someone as savvy as you would be able to help us."

DM Jan
Tuesday February 17th, 2004 1:11:36 AM

"The boy's right," asserts Kernorn as Theo comes up with an explanation for the proboscis.
He takes the thimble from Vorelle while at the same time giving her a lecherous once-over with his beady eyes, but then his attention becomes totally absorbed on the tiny container, and seems to be only half listening to Vauhwyt's explanation.

Dietrich can't see much inside the box. It looks fairly solid, apart from a few air holes poked in it. But something seems to be shiftng inside it, and the buzzing sound suggests the creature is... irritated.
One of the other boxes, near Zayne and Devlin, starts to buzz also.

Vauhwyt can't see any snakes, but there are plenty of spiders - from sleek, tiny ones, to huge fat hairy beasts about six inches long. There's a black scorpion in one tank that seems to be fast asleep.

"Whur -??" exclaims Kernorn, brought out of his analysis of the saliva-like substance, as Rose asks the question regarding the box.
"Oh..."
He walks over to the box next to Dietrich and pushes it away with his foot - looking at the tall warrior as though he were about to bite the head off one of Kernorn's children.
"It's just one of my studies. A large fruit fly."
He then turns and addresses Olyn and the others.
"I take it you are all out to catch this creature? It definitely appears to be some kind of insect. Now if you'll leave me alone for a few hours, I suspect I can narrow it down to a certain type at least, which will help you.
"Tell me where you all live? And I'll stop by later, how about that?"

He waits, his left eye twitching slightly.

Acting on impulse, Vauhwyt yields to a hunch.

"Can I look at that spider?" she asks, pointing overhead. "Mookie, grab that one!" (Bluff check 15 to secretly communicate to Mookie that this is a bluff).

Mookie starts to fly up, but does not fly into a web or grab a spider. (Mookie's Bluff check to aid another is a 22!)

But all of this is just a bluff to distract the bug-guy. (Bluff check with help from Mookie is 28! Sweet!)

While the bug guy is looking up at Mookie, Vauhwyt quickly steps over to one of the buzzing boxes. She picks one up, saying, "Whatever is in here must be pretty big or it would fly out an airhole. Let's take a look?"

And then the liontaur opens the box. If it is not easily opened, she puts fingers in the holes and pulls (Str check 15 to pull/break the box open).

If she gets a chance to see what is inside, she'll be looking for something with a barbed proboscis.

" 'Fruit Fly,' huh? Deadly spiders and scorpions you keep in the open, but fruit flies you keep boxed away?"

Dietrich
Tuesday February 17th, 2004 2:56:56 PM

The fighter shrugs his shoulders when Kernon take the box away. 'Just insects, so what.'

He´s suspicious of the bug-guy too, for he seems to have more feelings towards insects than towards people. Dietrich feels the man will not voluntarly aid in killing the monster.

After the party leaves the room, Dietrich shares his thoughts with his friends and suggests not to tell Kernon too much of their purposes.

While the others go to eat, he has to do some shopping and will meet them later this day. He´d like to get the infos today and hunt the monster early in the morning.

DM Jan
Tuesday February 17th, 2004 11:48:44 PM

Kernorn seems most disappointed at Olyn's suggestion and becomes the snappy, irritable character Zayne and Devlin remember from their encounter with him in the market earlier.

"Make it 4 hours, then," he grumbles. "I have a lot of... errands, yes, errands."

His eyes follow Mookie upward, and then he growls angrily as Vauhwyt tries to pop open one of the buzzing boxes.
"What do you think this is??" he yells. "A zoo?? Do you know what would happen if that got out and found its way above ground? What it could do to our crops??"
His projected moral indignation is blistering.
The liontaur will note that the box is very sturdy, and that it has a hatch, fastened by four sturdy clips, two of which are locked. It won't come off. It's hard to see whats inside, just a brief glimpse of something moving. The buzzing suggests the creature inside is quite maddened.

Assuming everyone agrees to meet back at the appointed time, Mattison, who's been even more hesitant than Rose and Vorelle - breathes a sigh of relief.
"I'll meet you all back here in 4 hours, then," he says. "Brrrr... that place gave me the creeps."
Off he goes.

So...
The group has four hours to kill.
Are the suspicions about Kernorn well-founded?
Or is he just one those creepy kinda guys?
Will he have more insight into what the group is up against?
If anyone would know, it seems he would.
But who's side is he on?
Perhaps all will be revealed in four hours time.

((OOC - next DM post will take place after the 4 hours are up.))

ill be checking in with some net salesmen, with finer holes than normal fishing ones. perhaps we can catch this thing alive and turn it in to Kernorn if he isnt involved. im sure a live specimen would net us a huge reward.

I will head to a fishing supply store and see about getting, if they have any in stock, some nets that are used for small quill or something in that size. if they have a nice net, approximately 25x25 when unfolded, ill buy it and 100' of silk rope, in 25' sections and carry it all to the apartment. where then ill grab something quick to eat.

Vauhwyt puts down the buzzing box and leaves with the party. Once they are out of earshot, she listens to Olyn and the others.

Mookie says, "This reminds me of a bad theatrical performance. The good guys confront the bad guy, but don't have enough evidence to *do* anything. Then, having tipped off the bad guy, they give him plenty of time alone to strike again or to hide the evidence or to run away!"

Vauhwyt laughs. "Mookie, it's kind of rude to put it that way, but I do agree. I think this guy is the villain. I think he has giant killer mosquitoes in those boxes. I think that if we are not careful he is going to escape or hide or something. I don't think we should let that happen."

"Mookie, you stay here to hide and watch the doorr. I'll hide about 150 feet away, out of sight and hearing range. If the guy comes out of his doorr, I'll sense it through Mookie. I'll drink my Elixers of Sneaking and Hiding and shadow him. I'll cast Blood Armor too if the one I have up now wears off."

"If anyone wants to stay with me, keep well back so as not to alert the bug guy. I'll use a message spell or two to keep us in touch if that happens."

[OOC Recap: Mookie hides in sight of the guy's door. His check is 22, thanks to his tiny size bonus. Vauhwyt hides 150 feet away around a corner and out of sight and hearing range. Her hide check is a 6, but hopefully it won't matter since she is far away. If Mookie projects sudden alertness (enpathy link), then Vauhwyt casts Message on the least sneaky person waiting with her. Then she casts Blood Armor on herself. Then she drinks her two elixers of sneaking and hiding. Then she tries to find the bug guy and shadow him. If she gets the idea from her link with Mookie that he is moving fast, she'll drink the elixer of hiding first, before he can get around the corner and see her. If Mookie projects panic and fear, then Vauhwyt immediately runs in to fight.]

"If we are lucky," Vauhwyt tells the group, "I'll sit here bored for four hours and see you when you return. I hope you guys can find out more about the bug guy while I stand watch."
