Cadmar and Elerinn pass an uneventful watch, and are replaced by Kedarn and Andrath. As Kedarn walks around the camp, he hears something moving beyond the glow of the small fire, Andrath doesn't hear anything, but his keen eyes are able to make out four forms circling the camp.

With a snarling rush, the wolves are in the camp. Confused by the small but bright fire two beasts growl and snap ineffectually in the air, while the third attacks Andrath, wounding him. (6 damage to the elf, DC 12 Dex or Str to avoid getting knocked down) One beast, larger than the others, advances on the party's leader, and pounces, rending with terrible vigour (16 damage to Kedarn, DC 26 Dex or Str to avoid getting knocked down.)

The noise from the attacks will waken those who are sleeping or in meditation.

"zzz...zzz..."

(OOC: Bob & Carla, how do you guys handle waking up? Should we get a roll to be wake up from the noise?)

(DM Carla responds: In this situation, the noise from the attacks would likely waken those who are sleeping. Please feel free to post again. Once you do, I will delete this post.)

Elerinn  2d4(3+3)+1=7
Wednesday February 11th, 2004 4:26:36 PM

Elerinn is awakened by the wolves' loud arrival. The first thing he sees is a huge wolf attacking Kedarn and leaving a terrible, bleeding wound in his friend's shoulder. Quickly observing the situation, he notices the other three wolves. But he realizes the largest wolf is, right now, the biggest threat.

The gnome stands up and starts casting a spell, ignoring the night's blistering cold. After he utters the last word of his arcane incantation, he hurls two bolts of energy towards the larger wolf. At the top of his lungs, he shouts: "Flank that creature! Kedarn needs help!"

(OOC: Magic Missile, both bolts directed at the dire wolf, for a total of 8(I rolled 2d4+1 instead of 2d4+2)

Kedarn (AC 17 HP 27/27)  d20+6=17 d6=2
Wednesday February 11th, 2004 4:47:55 PM

Kedarn cringes as the dire wolf just bearly misses him. Quickly pulling his rapier (move action)then attacks the dire wolf with the rapier (hit AC 17 dmg 2.)

Kedarn yells out "Help!!"

***
OOC:
dire wolf missed in its bite attack so I need not save vs trip attack.

(DM Carla questions: As per your PC sheet sent Jan. 14, 2004 AC is 16? e-mail me at rcwatt@ntl.sympatico.ca)
I just resent the correct sheet to you.

Andrath (AC18, 18/24 hp)  d20+4=14 d20+10=11 d20+8=10 d20+8=14 d8+4=7 2d6(1+4)=5
Wednesday February 11th, 2004 7:47:38 PM

[OOC: Carla/Bob, since I purchased a chain shirt for Andrath, his new AC is 18. I will take the 6 hp damage as a punishment for my delay in getting you the new character sheet. :) The new sheet is on its way tonight.]

Andrath winces as the wolf bites through his new armour, but manages to shake off the wolf's grip. [OOC: Made the Dex check roll with 14.]

He quickly realizes that the huge wolf is the real threat, and tumbles into a flanking position with Kedarn. [OOC: Tried two tumbling rolls if necessary. Certainly the first roll is necessary to leave the square threatened by the wolf that already hit Andrath, but failed with a tumble roll of 11. If Andrath has to tumble through the reach of the large wolf, then the second roll applies, which is also a failure with a roll of 10. However, without a map, I can't tell if Andrath can move to a flanking position without moving through a square threatened by the dire wolf, which I would obviously prefer to have happen. He can tumble up to 15', and move a further 15'. So, assuming Andrath is still conscious...]
Andrath moves behind the big wolf and stabs at the beast's rear end. [OOC: Hit AC14, for 7 damage, plus 5 flanking damage, for a total of 12 hp damage.]

Cadmar AC17
Thursday February 12th, 2004 3:27:26 AM

Cadmar wakes up from blissful sleep. He is yet unsure what is going on and who attacked the party, but his instincts tell him to arm himself. He reaches for his shield and straps it to his shoulder [move action] and stands up while drawing his scimitar [move action combined with drawing the weapon].

Alkali (AC: 14, HP: 10)
Thursday February 12th, 2004 7:09:41 AM

Alkali rolls over away from the fire and looks up. Seeing the wolves, Alkali goes into a momentary panic until he sees Kedarn's blood. He pulls out his wand of cure light wounds and points at Kedarn.

Thursday February 12th, 2004 7:49:40 AM

Growls, snarls, and cries for help errupt as the camp is attacked. Due to recent purchases of chain shirts, the two elves on guard narrowly escape injury. (OOC: Andrath and Kedarn take no damage first round!)

The wolves have moved into the clearing with #3 attacking Andrath at 12 o'clock, #2 positioned at 1 o'clock, #1 positioned at 2 o'clock and the dire wolf attacking Kedarn at 3 o'clock. Alkali, Lorth, Elerin, and Cadmar are around the fire at 2 o'clock, 4 o'clock, 8 o'clock, and 10 o'clock respectively. Cassandra is in the tent located in the quadrant between 9 and 12 o'clock.

Brave Elerinn is successful, with his missiles as they blast into the beast's side. Kedarn, too is successful and draws blood. While Andrath attempts to move away from wolf #3, he runs into wolf #2 injuring the animal badly with a nasty gash.

Wolf # 3 moves into camp and attacks the newest member, Alkali (hit AC 18 for 4 pts dmg) while #2 retaliates against Andrath chomping down hard on the elf (Hit AC 21 for 7 pts damage). #1 goes after Lorth (Hit AC 16 for 2 pts dmg). Howling with rage the dire wolf attacks Kedarn with a great gnashing of teeth (Hit AC 27 for 18 damage)

Cassandra huddles in the tent.

Elerinn AC: 12 HP: 21  2d4(4+3)+2=9
Thursday February 12th, 2004 5:30:24 PM

As the gnome observes the chaotic campsite, he knows the dire wolf must be defeated soon. He can see his friend Kedarn bleeding from the beast's last attack. The three others wolves also deal wound the rest of his friends. For a brief moment, he considers to cast a protective spell on himself. But spotting no other wolves around, Elerinn decides this can wait. Most of the others are wearing armor, so his spell won't be usefull to them.

Elerinn understands the seriousness of the situation, but cannot help feeling totally alive. Like a performing bard, the gnome's mind is clear. He is totally focused on the ongoing battle.

The gnome's incantations result in two new bolts, hitting the dire wolf again. As the two shining missiles hit the fearsome beast, Elerinn shouts: "Kedarn, hold on! Somebody, heal him!" After that he exclames, in a voice that would be more appropriate to a savage barbarian: "By Wardd, may we be lucky!

OOC: Magic missile for a total of 9 damage

Andrath (AC18, 17/24 hp)  d20+4=15 d20+4=23 d20+4=15 d8+4=12 2d6(6+2)+2=10
Thursday February 12th, 2004 11:46:19 PM

Realizing he needs to fight his way through to the big dire wolf, and take some of the pressure off of Kedarn, Andrath swings his longsword to drop the wolf that stands in his way (wolf #2). His blade flashes as he strikes at the furred beast. [OOC: First swing with longsword hits AC15 for 12 hp damage.]

If this blow drops the wolf, Andrath moves 30' towards the dire wolf, to reach a position at the dire wolf's 12 o'clock.

If the first swing did not drop the wolf, then Andrath swings again at the wolf with his shortsword. [OOC: Second swing is a critical threat, confirmed by hitting AC15, for 10 hp damage. If both swings hit, full damage is 22 hp.] If the wolf is finally dead from the blows, Andrath shifts 5' closer to the dire wolf (likely standing over the dead body of wolf #2).

He calls out, "Cadmar, quick, Kedarn needs our help! Kedarn, back off and heal yourself! Let me face this beast for a round! But I will need your healing next round, I'm sure!"

Kedarn (AC 17 HP 9/27)  d20+6=22 d6=2
Friday February 13th, 2004 3:38:42 AM

Crying out in pain as the dire wolf bites him Kedarn lashes out with the rapier at the dire wolf one more time. (hit AC 22 DMG 2)

Cadmar AC15 HP25(25)  d20+5=8
Friday February 13th, 2004 4:47:29 AM

"Kedarn, don't-" Cadmar sees his badly wounded friend stand his ground against the beast and realizes Kedarn's life might be ended by one lucky blow. With a cry the ranger rushes at the wolf, hoping to draw its attention away from others [Cadmar charges the wolf, ending his move just north of Kedarn]. His hasty attack however is badly timed and misses; the scimitar whizzes past wolf's head and its tip buries itself in the snow [attack hits AC8].

Alkali AC 14 HP 7  d8=7 d20+5=23 d4=4
Friday February 13th, 2004 7:32:30 AM

After a momentary panic attack, Alkali fires away with his wand of cure light wounds at Kedarn. "Kedarn, we gotta fight this ... ahh!" Alkali holds his hand against the pain and backs off away from the wolf.

Summoning his hawk, he sends it to attack the wolf upon him.

OOC: Hawk (HP 5, AC 20) Hits AC 23, does 2 damage. Wand cures 7 HP of Kedarn.

Lorth
Friday February 13th, 2004 7:48:56 AM

Lorth ignores the wolf attacking him and charges over to Kedarn. He tries to make his way to Kedarn's side and touch him with his hand, concentrating on healing energies.

Saturday February 14th, 2004 9:28:37 AM

The fierce howls and snarls of the wolves and the cries of attack from the party ring through the night.

Andrath drops the wolf in his way with a savage slash across it's neck and it's life blood stains the snow crimson around it. The elven rogue presses forward to provide relief to Kedarn.

Alkali curses the cure light wounds wand in his hands and then remembers that he must actually touch his intended target. He bolts forward, narrowly dodging an attack from wolf #3, and touches Kedarn with the wand. His hawk strikes the infuriated wolf, drawing blood from around it's face.

Lorth also manages to evade attack from the wolf opposing him (wolf#1) and is able to lay his hands on Kedarn.

Cadmar charges across the campsite and swings at the dire wolf but misses.

Elerinn sends 2 more bolts of energy weaving through the growing melee, and both strike the dire wolf causing it to roar in pain and rage.

Infuriated at the hawk, wolf #3 leaps and snaps at it to no avail. Wolf #1 spins and charges Lorth who now stands beside Kedarn. The wolf's teeth penetrate the paladin's leg [Hit AC 18 for 4 dmg] as it tries to drag Lorth to the ground [roll versus DC 14 to stay standing].

The dire wolf lashes out at Cadmar as he dashes in to aid Kedarn but misses the paladin [Attack of Opportunity Hit AC 15] and then in rage bites again, this time striking the paladin and sinking it's teeth deep into his torso [Hit AC 26 for 18 dmg]. The fierce beast tries to throw Cadmar to the ground [roll vs DC 11 to remain standing]

Saturday February 14th, 2004 1:42:27 PM

Andrath shifts 5' to his left, to be flanking the dire wolf with Lorth. His two blades flash again, as he tries to cut chunks from the large creature's body. [OOC: First swing with longsword misses with a 10. Second swing with shortsword is a critical hitting AC25, but not confirmed (rolled a 13 to hit, and assuming the dire wolf has the standard AC14), so just a regular hit. Damage is 6 plus 11 flanking damage, for a total of 17 hp.]

The rogue calls out, "Make sure that someone is always flanking this beast with me; I can do alot more damage that way! If you get hit, back out and let Alkali heal you. We have enough attackers to move in and out, so that no-one has to worry about being killed by a lucky critical hit from this beast!"

Elerinn AC: 16 HP: 21 (Mage Armor)
Sunday February 15th, 2004 6:03:21 PM

With one of the wolves dead and the dire wolf surrounded by his friends, Elerinn silently thanks Wardd. He considers shooting another missile at the wounded dire wolf, but sees the smaller wolf on the other side of the fire. The gnome starts casting a spell, and the magical, invisible armor that is formed around his body makes him feel a lot saver.

Elerinn moves as close as possible to Cassandra, and carefully watches the wolf standing alone by the fire. Without looking away from the animal, Elerinn asks: "Cassandra, are you allright? Stay there, soon this will be over. Luck is on our side."

Cadmar AC17 HP7(25)  d20+1=18
Monday February 16th, 2004 3:11:48 AM

Cadmar feels as if he has been hit by a blacksmith's hammer. Dozens of needle sharp teeth pierce his chain. Despite shock and pain the ranger manages to remain on his feet [Dex check 18], but the impact of the blow throws him well away from the fight and almost right into the campfire. He manages to evade falling into it in the last possible moment. The disturbed firewood sends a cloud of sparks into the air [double move action: move away from the dire wolf. Cadmar ends his move just north of the campfire].

The ranger feels that his right arm starts to go numb.

Andrath cuts down hard and the large wolf lets out a howl encompassing both fury and anguish, as it stumbles awkwardly, blood flowing profusely from its many wounds. Kedarn, his energy restored, reaches out to Cadmar and returns the favour as the latter reels under the evil wolf's attack.

As Elerinn prepares an invisible force for self protection, Alkali spins his enchantment, catching Lorth as well as the big wolf and it's smaller companion, wolf#1. (DC 14 or enchanted) The wolves shake off the spell. The two elves, Andrath and Keadarn, are able to resist the magical sleep due to a unique racial characteristic.

Pupils contracted, the bleeding monster at the center of the melee snaps at Kedarn (Hit AC 27, for 18 dmg) and drags him to the ground (nat 20!)then moves north of the fallen cleric of Gargul. Wolf #3 snaps at Cadmar, and misses, while Wolf #1 sinks his teeth into Lorth (Hit AC 20, for 5 dmg) and tries to drag him down (DC 6 or be prone.)

Cassandra exits the tent to stand beside Elerinn, but only a strangled sound escapes her lips as she puts her hands to her covered face.

(OOC: Didn't know which wolves Alkali was aiming at. The only wolves close enough to both be affected were the Dire Wolf and Wolf#1)

[OOC: Not having a map, or a distance for how far the dire wolf moved, I assumed it only shifted 5'. If it moved more than 5 feet, only the hit with the longsword will apply. If it moved more than 30', but less than 60', Andrath will need to charge to hit, dropping his AC to 17.]

Andrath watches his opportunity for flanking disappear, as Cadmar leaves the combat after taking so much damage, Kedarn chases after him, trying to reach him with healing, and the dire wolf itself pulls Lorth to the ground. He shifts to stay in contact with the wolf, and continues to swing his two blades at the wolf, trying to drop the huge beast before it bites its way through all the party. [OOC: Longsword swing hit AC20 for 11 hp damage, shortsword hit AC14 for 5 hp damage, for a total of 16 hp damage.]

The elf rogue calls out, "The beast is sorely hurt, we need to concentrate all our attacks quickly, and drop it. Elerinn, do you have any magic missiles left? Use them now if you do!"

ADM Bob and Carla
Tuesday February 17th, 2004 10:19:10 PM

With a high pitched whine the large wolf succumbs to Andrath's stinging blows. The rogue barely has time to call for aid when the beast is blown to bits by the diminutive spell slinger, Elerinn. Bone fragments and blood splatter the defenders, leaving nothing but an indistiquishable charred mass in their midst.

Lorth and Kedarn struggle to regain their footing, while Alkali is speechless.

Taking a wound from Cadmar, Wolf #3 retreats north, while the unharmed Wolf #1 quickly skirts the site and follows.

Those who are observant will notice that the unharmed wolf pauses shortly after gaining the trail. It's glowing yellow eyes look to see if any of the party appears to be following. It then turns tail, and trots down what appears to be an established game trail.

The slightest lessening of the dark in the east indicates morning is coming.

Andrath
Wednesday February 18th, 2004 12:28:09 AM

Andrath wipes his two blades and sheaths them. He looks around at the carnage caused by the wolf attack, and remembers once again why he prefers the city, and its simple, urban dangers. "Give me a common cutpurse, or a group of alley-thugs any day," he mumbles under his breath.

Then the elf goes over and opens the jaws of the huge dead wolf, and, using a dagger, carefully cuts individual fangs from the creature's mouth. He takes pieces of twine from his pack, and fashions six crude necklaces from the teeth. He places one around his neck, and offers the rest to the other party members. Then Andrath says, "This has been our first serious blooding, and for a few seconds, I was worried that we might lose someone. But we fought together as a team, and we all came to each other's aid, not worrying about our own skin. We should be proud of how we all carried ourselves this night, and we should remember what we can do when we work together."

Having said his piece, the elf makes his way to the fire, planning to catch at least one or two hours sleep before the party gets moving again.

Cadmar AC17 HP16(25)
Wednesday February 18th, 2004 4:05:31 AM

Cadmar watches the last wolf bolt. Everything happened so fast that only now he starts to fully realize what has transpired. "Everyone alive?" he asks in a weak voice, and is relieved to see that Cassandra and all of his friends are still standing.

Cadmar takes off his chain shirt and, after examining his wound, is relieved not to find any broken ribs. He puts his hand on the blotch of blood and closes his eyes, feeling warmth and life slowly return to his mauled side [lay on hands 4]. "This should do. I should be in good shape tomorrow, but I see that some of you are in need of magical healing."

Cadmar accepts the necklace and, after some thought, stores it in his backpack. "These are grand torphies for sure, but maybe we shouldn't wear them openly while in Culverwood? We know that we killed this wolf to defend our lives, but the man from Wyrmsfut does not. And he might not give us the time to explain."

"Do you think the pack might be back? I start to think that we should prepare our camps more carefully. At the very least we might take the effort to find a tree suitable for climbing every time we stop for night. If we scrambled up the trees we could have repelled the wolves with arrows without any risk."

Cadmar finds a tree he likes, ties a rope to its lower branches so that it is easy to climb should the need arise, and hangs his bow and quiver on one of the lower branches.

"In case the wolves return in greater numbers."

Lorth
Wednesday February 18th, 2004 7:49:15 AM

Lorth thanks Kedarn for the healing. And takes the tooth offered by Andrath. He too, like Cadmar stores it in his pack. He then makes his way over to his belongings and tries to get a few more hours of sleep.

Elerinn
Wednesday February 18th, 2004 9:04:38 AM

Elerinn looks at the corpse of the carnivorous animal, that has collapsed on the ground and will continue his extince as a hideous mess instead of a living animal. The red-haired gnome can barely believe this is the creature that threatened the lives of his friends just moments ago. When he becomes aware the other wolves are fleeing into the dark forest, Elerinn calls out, in a shrill voice: "By Wardd, we did it!"

Looking at his wounded friends and the witch wearing the cursed mask, he asks: "If everyone allright? That creature wounded you pretty bad."

Elerinn accepts Andrath's crude necklace, but stores it in his backpack like the others. "It's very special, I will wear it when we leave these woods. But it's better to hide it while we are in this dangerous forest."

The adrenalin is already slowly leaving the excited gnome's body, and he is somewhat sorry for this. But when Andrath's shares his thoughts on the fought battle, Elerinn agrees with him that it could have ended much bloodier. With the dead of one of his friends. Remembering the monk Thram, Elerinn disagrees with the rogue, however, that this is the first serious battle fought. "We've lost a friend in the past, Thram, don't forget that. But because we acted as a group here, we were able to defend ourselves. I thank all of you."

He also thanks Wardd for the survival of his friends and himself. When he sees his friends are preparing themselves for a few hours of sleep, he moves over to a tree with low branches. While getting ready for a short nap himself, Elerinn notices for the first time since the wolves' attack that it's still freezing.

Alkali
Wednesday February 18th, 2004 7:54:32 PM

Alkali look around at the carnage and then at himself. He is ashamed that he was useless in this battle.

As people are preparing for more sleep, Alkali rethinks the idea. "Wolves and other animals can smell this blood from anywhere. If not wolves others will come fast. I suggest we move away."

ADM Bob and Carla
Wednesday February 18th, 2004 10:05:15 PM

A contemplative group take stock of their recent performance. Cadmar makes a mental note of the status of each member, as he tends to his wounds. Kedarn mends his scrapes and contusions, and is able to offer some relief to Lorth as well. Elerinn has an epiphany, realising that he can be effective in combat, and might actually enjoy it. Andrath takes a grizzly souvenir. Reflecting on how team work carried the day, he crafts each of his party a momento of the event. Alkali and Cassandra remain quiet, lost in their own thoughts. That is until Cadmar mentions 'wolf'. The word barely escapes his lips, when Cassandra tips her masked face to the sky and emits a long wail that quickly reaches pitch and then tapers. She continues howling until one of the party calls her by name.

There is a brief respite as each is able to get a bit of rest before the sun colours the sky rose and gold. Despite the sun, it is still cold. Warm breath escapes lips like small puffs of smoke. The ground is white except where it is stained red by blood. The carcasses of the two dead beasts are frozen solid. On waking, muscles are sore, and there are some bruises, and sores.

Two trails lead from the camp site; the well trod game trail taken by the wolves, and the route the party had been following, visible only as a snow covered road through the trees, the faint markings of wagon wheels covered over by a layer of snow.

Andrath
Wednesday February 18th, 2004 11:53:21 PM

Andrath agrees with the party's concern about displaying their trophy necklaces, so he puts his inside his armour, out of sight. He says to Elerinn, "You are right, we have been in combat before, and we have lost a member of our party. However, in that encounter, we did anything but work as a team. I think that back then, we were still realizing our own and each others' potential, and personal fear won the day. I only meant that this was the first serious combat challenge that we have faced together, working together, and supporting each other. That is why I figured it was worthwhile to collect the momentoes. And," he adds with a small grin, "that owlbear did get away after all."

Waking up after his catnap, Andrath asks, "Is it worthwhile following the game trail for a little while this morning? I am wondering if those furry beasts (avoiding saying the name of the creatures, so that Cassandra is not forced to change yet again) have ambushed other travellers, and have dragged any bodies back to a den of some sort. Often, there is treasure available from these victims, and while we are there, we can make sure that any of these victims are properly buried. I am not talking about spending days on the trail, but I figure that we can spare a couple of hours. If we come across those wounded wol..." Andrath stops before he says the creatures' name, and then continues, "Anyway, if we find any creatures in their lair, I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to chase them off."

He moves over to Cassandra's side and asks, "Would it be alright with you if we spent a few hours searching for the lair of the animals that just attacked us? Or should we continue to the swamp post-haste? You are the one suffering under the curse of that mask, and you should decide our pace."

Hearing Cassandra howl like a wolf, Kedarn walks over and says "Cassandra, everything will be ok."

Kedarn will thenwalk over to Cadmar and touch him with the Wand of CLW and heal Cadmar (9hp (2 charges.)) Afterwards Kedarn goes over to Andrath and uses the wand healling Andrath (8hp (1 charge.)) Kedarn will accept the token from Andrath and comment "That was a close one Thank you all for your aid and teamwork."

Kedarn quickly checks the leaf that the greenmage pined on him to see that it is still there and green. "Remember we are not to harm the forrest while we are under the greenmage's protection. In tracking the wolves back to their lair would we be harming the forrest if we cleared them out?" asks Kedarn.

Lorth
Thursday February 19th, 2004 7:39:36 AM

Lorth stowes all his gear, puts on his armor and readies himself for the days journey.

Shield strapped to one arm and warhammer hanging on his belt he makes his way over to the rest of the party and prepares to fall in line.

He listens to Andrath and Kedarn's banter but offers no opinion, standing silent.

Cadmar
Thursday February 19th, 2004 7:42:44 AM

"Thank you, Kedarn."

Cadmar stretches his numb limbs, removes the rope and his weapons from the tree, and listens to both Andrath and Kedarn. Then he scratches his head.

"So far we have enjoyed the help and goodwill of the Greenmage. He gave us his aid and in return he asked only that we do not to harm the forest. Remember the warnings of the satyrs?... If he cares even for branches on the trees then killing wolves is going to infuriate him."

"Besides, look how overgrown this trail is. It must have been many years since this trail was frequented by humans."

Elerinn
Thursday February 19th, 2004 7:53:02 AM

Elerinn disagrees when Andrath suggests to search for the wolves lair and says: "Wolves only attack people when they are starved. With this terrible weather, I guess we can't blame them for their ferocious instincts. I suggest to continue along the road we followed and let these wolves be. We can't help or save every traveller in the Wold..."

The gnome starts packing his belongings and suggests to continue the dangerous journey as soon as possible, with the same marching order. He is freezing, and perhaps some walking will warm their bodies somewhat."

Alkali
Thursday February 19th, 2004 8:01:22 PM

Alkali gathers his belongings and sits over in a corner practicing his spells and incantations. He looks up at Cassandra when she is given the option of the party's next move.

As the group prepares to depart the clearing, Kedarn calms Cassandra, and further heals his friends. The elven cleric notices the leaf pinned on him by Grynntym is as green and fresh as the day it was plucked from the staff of the greenmage.

Cadmar and Elerinn urge the party to continue the journey while Andrath suggests a brief detour. Lorth stands by, stoically. Alkali watches Cassandra, who shrugs her shoulders and pulls the hood of her short cloak up around her head.

Those who have ventured out over untrod snow note that a slight crust has formed over the top. The eleves, and smaller folk are able to walk across it fairly well, however after a few steps the weight of the heavier folk causes the crust to collapse, thus making passage difficult.

The sky is clear, and the sun causes the snow and ice crystals to sparkle so brightly it brings tears to the eyes. The branches of bare trees are covered by a fine layer of frost, and snow adorns the conifers. It is a beautiful, if cold, day.

With a little activity, those with warm cloaks or wool clothing should be quite comfortable.

Everyone, please roll a Spot check.

Kedarn then starts to gather up his belongings and getting everything ready to leave. Kedarn wil make up some warm food for everyone before they put out the fire and leave. As the group sets out Kedarn will cast Endure elements on Cassandra and Elerrin.

Kedarn will take the same place as the day before in the marching order and have his rapier ready. (spot 13, listen 13)

Thursday February 19th, 2004 11:46:20 PM

"I am not talking about killing the grey furry beasts (again avoiding saying the word 'wolf'), only about chasing them off if we determine that first they have a lair, and second, there is something in their lair that we want to take into our possession. Being from the city, I don't know if those creatures only attack when they are starved. They sure seemed healthy to me. And, that one creature was sure larger than the others, and it almost was malicious in its intent to harm us. I don't believe this was just a random encounter with forest beasts only driven by hunger. So, do we spend a couple of hours seeing where they have gone, or do we continue on? Cassandra doesn't seem to have an opinion one way or the other."

As he waits for all of his friends to voice their opinions, he has a quick look around. [OOC: Well, would you look at that, a natural 20 rolled for the spot check, for a total of 35!]

Cadmar listens to Andrath and, after a moment, whispers so that he doesn't trigger the changes of Cassandra's face: "There might be something to what you are saying. But if the wolves have a lair nearby they are not going anywhere. Cassandra, on the other hand, should have this mask off as soon as possible. Its influence over her might be growing stronger with every hour. For her sake, could we please postpone investigating the wolves until the mask is taken off her face? Later we can decide to return here. We could even consult the Greenmage first, which would be, in my opinion, a smart thing to do."

Cadmar casually looks around. His hood shields his eyes well from the sunlight reflections on the snow [Spot 21].

Alkali's hawk circles above looking for anything. (Alkali spots at 11, the hawk spots at 28)

ADM Bob and Carla

Andrath's sharp eyes pick up a trio of ravens flying concentric circles in the sky. Alkali's hawk sights them as well and swoops down, scattering the glossy black birds. As the hawk returns to it's master, the rest of the party see the ravens regroup. One alights on a tree, while the other two perform arial acrobatics, but always over the same area. It would be but a half hour hike along the game trail to see what has captured the birds' attention.

Cassandra and Elerinn will pass a comfortable day, thanks to Kedarn. Andrath's is the lone dissenting voice, as Cadmar, Alkali and the others are anxious to press on towards Pullman's Crossing.

Cadmar
Saturday February 21st, 2004 6:15:13 AM

Cadmar looks at the ravens.

"Well Andrath, seems that your intuition has proven better than ours. There is something out there. It might be just a carcass of a deer. Or it might be something else."

Cadmar looks at Alkali and Elerinn. "So, how well exactly can you communicate with your feathery friends? Could they fly over to that spot and let us know what they see?"

Kedarn
Saturday February 21st, 2004 8:05:13 AM

"Andrath, start heading us towards the feathered friends and lets find out what has them gathering. Everyone lets be on guard for any possible attacks." Kedarn says to everyone as he readies his rapier.

Elerinn
Sunday February 22nd, 2004 5:46:18 PM

Elerinn thanks Kedarn gratefully and wishes he can do something in return today. When Andrath notices the birds circling over a specific place and answering Cadmar's question, he says: "Well, actually, you can also communicate with Qamaro here! He speaks our language." Demonstrating his familiar's skill, Elerinn asks the raven to fly over to the spot were the birds circle around and look out for anything unusual.

Alkali

The return of Alkali's hawk scatters the circling ravens once again. Qamaro flies towards the raucous birds "Tock...tock...tock" his call note penetrates the cold air, and the ravens calm themselves.

The party makes it's way gingerly along the trail until they come to a ravine that descends some 30 feet. The trail here is steep and will require some finesse to negotiate [Climb check versus DC 15 or slide to the bottom].

The rogue spies the dark shadow of a cave opening on the far side of the ravine, partly obscured by the overhanging branches of several large conifer trees.

Qamaro returns to Elerinn's shoulder and croaks out the word "food!".

"I don't think I have the skill to descend safely, much less to climb back up" he whispers. Cadmar pulls a rope out of his backpack and ties it to a nearby tree [Take10 on Use Rope: 11], tossing the coil down the ravine. The party makes it's way down the steep ravine. Andrath and Alkali descend the treacherous slope without any outside assistance, while Kedarn, Elerinn, Cassandra, and Cadmar descend with the assistance of a fixed line [OOC using a rope provides a +10 circumstance bonus to your climb checks]. Lorth chooses a less traditional approach and barrels down the slope, snow flying in all directions until he arrives at the bottom with a gentle thud.

Andrath creeps towards the open mouth of the cave, slipping between the shadows of overhead fir trees until he can see inside the cave itself.

He is certain that no wolves are present at the moment, but their tracks surround the entrance and a strong and unpleasant smell emanates from the cave. Andrath can see that the cave extends some 40-50 feet into the hill and is shaped like an irregular inverted bowl. The floor is relatively smooth and appears to be composed of packed earth, perhaps from repeated flooding in the ravine. There is enough ambient light to see the walls and ceiling of the cave, although shadows and other irregularities might conceal crevices and other chambers. Bones, picked clean of flesh, litter the floor.

At the mouth of the cave, Andrath gets out his lantern [OOC: Sorry, DM's, he never had a torch] and lights it. He turns to the party and says, "I'm going in to have a look around. I don't plan to disturb anything, and I am only going to take out anything that is valuable. If you could keep those wolves off my back, I would sure appreciate it."

The elf rogue takes his lit lantern in one hand, and his longsword in the other hand, and moves carefully into the cave. If he does not come across anything alive, he will start to search the cave, looking for anything of interest or value. Of course, if he spots anything alive, all bets are off. [OOC: Spot roll of 30 to see anything alive, then search taking 20, so check of 31. If anything is found, then take 20 on appraise, so check is 29.]

Cassandra, Lorth, Elerinn, and Cadmar take up defensive positions at the mouth of the cave while the two elves enter under the light of Andrath's lantern. The party can feel the blessing of Kedarn fortify them before he enters the cave.

As the rogue and the cleric advance deeper into the cave, the light from their lantern casts a yellow hue across the walls and ceiling, and reveals a scene of horrible carnage. The floor of this back section of the cave is piled deep with bones, shredded clothes and personal belongings. Almost all of the skeletal remains are of persons of the various races of the Wold. The skulls of orcs share the floor with those of elves and halflings. It is immediately obvious to Andrath as he searches through the grisly remains that powerful jaws have been at work. Leg bones have been shattered and stripped of their marrow, skulls holed by powerful teeth, long bones splintered under the unforgiving pressure of a terrible carnivore. One with a taste for men and elves.

In amidst the ghastly refuse Andrath spots two bodies, half-elves clothed in travellers garb, the entrails of one spilling out beneath the bones, the second missing a leg. Both are clearly dead.

Andrath's stomach heaves as he eyes the carnage in front of him. He turns to Kedarn, and says, "Well, so much for Elerinn's idea that these wolves were poor starving creatures, only trying to find some food." Then he calls back out the cave opening, "These wolves are killers! Dangerous man and elf hunters! They seem to target humanoids! If they come back, we need to kill them, or they will prey on the humans and elves that enter into the forest."

Then he continues to shine his lantern about the cavern, searching for anything of interest. [OOC: I haven't posted what he plans to search, since I expect he will be reacting to something outside the cave very shortly. :) ]

Elerinn carefully watches the wolf Alkali and Lorth point out, and waits for Kedarn and Andrath's return.

DM Bob & Carla
Saturday February 28th, 2004 8:36:04 AM

Andrath takes his time examining the bodies and picking through the bones, while Kedarn prepares the bodies for burial.

Inside the shredded cloak of one of the half-elves is a letter introducing themselves as Lorinar and Gealan Flett, master carpenters from Jarlswolf. Two small pouches sewn into the cloaks of each men contain a total of 8 pp and 20 gp. Scattered among the bones, Andrath finds 2 flasks of a syrupy liquid, a necklace adorned with small gems, a single moonstone, and a battered quiver containing 18 undamaged arrows.

Andrath and Kedarn carry the first of the bodies to the mouth of the cave when Cassandra's mask contorts into the pointed muzzle of a wolf in response to Alkali's words. She raises her face to the sky and a long mournful howl splits the cold air. The two elves can just make out the tail of a retreating wolf where Lorth is pointing.

Kedarn
Saturday February 28th, 2004 3:20:15 PM

"Cassandra everything is going to be fine. We are just going to lay these poor souls to rest." Kedarn quickly says to Cassandra.

Once all the bodies are prepared for burial Kedarn says a short prayer "Great Gargul look after these poor souls in their time of need, watch over them in their final rest."

Afterwards Kedarn says " lets get them buried quickly."

Cadmar
Sunday February 29th, 2004 4:40:35 AM

"It will be hard digging in the frozen ground, and I don't think anybody brought a spade... Let's just pile some rocks over their bodies so that they are not further disturbed by creatures of the wild."

"Poor souls. I wonder what carpenters were doing here, in the middle of nowhere? We should take their possessions back to their families."

Elerinn
Sunday February 29th, 2004 5:54:02 PM

Elerinn, considers Cadmar's idea and realizes his idea is the best solution, under these circumstances. He also agrees with his friend's idea of bringing the carpenters belongings back to their families.

He suggests to make haste, however, for Cassandra suffers from her curse and it is unknown if the change will be permanent if the mask is worn too long.

Andrath
Sunday February 29th, 2004 11:27:22 PM

Andrath says, "Alright Cadmar, if we can't bury these bodies, we should cover them up with rocks, as you suggest. Also, we can bring the letter and the money to give to the families. But these other items, they were just found in the cavern, mixed in with the bones, and I think that we have as much a claim for them as anyone, and I plan on us keeping them."

Andrath looks at each of the items slowly and carefully, trying to guess their value. [OOC: Take 20 on appraise, so result is a 29.] "Kedarn, Elerinn, maybe you want to see if there is any magic on these items?"

Lorth
Monday March 1st, 2004 8:10:46 AM

"If nothing else, we should at least inform the families that their loved ones have passed on.", he offers.

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday March 2nd, 2004 12:00:19 AM

Kedarn speaks Cassandra's name and the mask once again transforms to it's original shape. Lorth and Cadmar gather rocks and pile them over the two bodies to keep out any scavengers. The sun lies directly overhead and the air is still and cold. The small cairn seems lonely and desolate and Kedarn's prayer to Gargul does little to lift the mood of the group. Even the noisy ravens have moved off now that their source of food has been covered over.

Andrath carefully examines the objects found in the dire wolf's lair and believes that the necklace, although ornate, is only worth about 30 gp, but the moonstone is better than average and may fetch as much as 70 gp. The arrows appear to be very well made [masterwork] with red and yellow fletching and dark wood shafts. The flasks are unlabeled and well sealed.

As the team gathers their belongings, they talk of notifying the next of kin of Lorinar and Gealan Flett on their return to Jarlswolf.

Elerinn
Wednesday March 3rd, 2004 6:11:27 PM

Elerinn agrees with Cadmar, and looks quite worried, instead of Lorth. He hopes the cursed mask can be removed by the feral creature the Greenmage mentioned.

Andrath
Wednesday March 3rd, 2004 11:42:47 PM

Andrath, out of his element in this forest, tries his best to keep warm, and keep his eyes open as he leads the party along the trail. He, too, worries about what this Wyrmsfut will bring.

Alkali
Thursday March 4th, 2004 6:13:47 AM

Alkali walks over to Andrath and asks about what items he found. "Did you find anything magic looking?"

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday March 4th, 2004 7:26:34 AM

The party members follow Andrath south along the Spice Trail. Each lost in their own thoughts, there is little conversation besides Alkali's inquiry about the nature of the found items. Snow has covered the trail and the smaller members of the party push through it with difficulty. Only the occasional bird is heard in the distance. Andrath sees and hears nothing alarming as they travel.

As the afternoon wanes and the sun begins to drop towards the far hills it grows colder. Long shadows connect the party members, one to the other. Cassandra grows weary and signals to Cadmar her desire to rest. A few raspy chirps are all the noise she is capable of making.

[OOC if you are resting for the night please post your watches]

Elerinn
Thursday March 4th, 2004 6:50:39 PM

Elerinn suggests he takes first watch again, so he can empower himself with arcane power again with a continues sleep. He helps Lorth gather deadwood for a fire, which is truly an important thing in this period of terrible weather.

Andrath
Thursday March 4th, 2004 11:32:12 PM

Andrath also helps to collect wood for the fire, being very careful not to stray too far from the campsite. He offers to take the middle watch again, and then wraps himself up in his cloak, to try to get some sleep before his watch.

Kedarn
Friday March 5th, 2004 6:28:20 AM

Kedarn helps set up the camp for the night. When a small fire is going Kedarn will make some warm food and drink for everyone. While veryone is eating Kedarn will ask "is there anyone having any problems? If there is please speak up as we all need everyone at 100% untill we make it back to Jarlswolf."
Kedarn will look for a couple of rocks about twice the size of his fist and set them beside the fire to heat up. after the rocks have been warming for a good while he will take the rocks and place them under his blanket to provide some warmth while he sleeps.

The party finds a small clearing beside the trail and sets up camp for the night. Lorth, Elerinn and Andrath gather dead fuelwood for the night and Kedarn prepares a meal for the group. Kedarn's two fist-sized rocks warm by the fire but the change in temperature, from freezing to hot causes them to split into nearly equal halves...still suitable to warm the bottom of a bedroll!

The night passes uneventfully although it is bitterly cold. The clear skies allow what little heat exists on the landscape to radiate out to the heavens.

Morning is announced by a woodpecker drumming in the distance.

Cadmar
Friday March 5th, 2004 8:57:29 AM

The ranger wakes up in sour mood, but does his best to keep it inside. Cassandra has been awfully quiet since yesterday and Cadmar starts to worry that the mask might eventually do something to harm her mind.

During breakfast he walks up to the witch, crouches by her side, and asks trying to hide his concern: "Cassandra, how are you feeling today?"

Lorth
Friday March 5th, 2004 9:43:42 AM

Lorth sits through the last watch, his blanket wrapped around him. As morning comes he watches the rest of his friends awaken and prepare for the day. "I sure cannot wait for spring, this winter is really cold.", he shares.
Lorth then packs up all his belongings and gets ready to move for the day.

Kedarn  d20+5=17 d20+5=22
Friday March 5th, 2004 7:40:16 PM

Kedarn spends the last part of his watch streching and praying to Gargul in his normal morning ritual preparing spells for the day. Kedarn will cast endure elements on Cassandra and Elerinn again. Then Kedarn will make some warm food and drink for the group before packing up his gear and making sure the fire is out.

When the party starts its journey again Kedarn will take the same place in marching order as he has the last few days.

Alkali
Saturday March 6th, 2004 8:13:29 AM

After yawning and stretching, Alkali gets up and shivers a bit. He eats his breakfast and marches along in order.

Andrath  d20+11=16 d20+15=26
Sunday March 7th, 2004 12:30:18 PM

Andrath shivers as the sun rises, hoping that the day will be warmer than yesterday, but not expecting it. As the party gets their stuff together to ready for travelling, the elf says, "Well, on the positive side, this cold weather will have frozen the marsh, so we won't have to worry about being cold and wet."

Then he takes his place at the head of the party, watching for trouble. He looks back over his shoulder, and calls out, "As long as this trail stays obvious, I can lead. But if it becomes difficult to find, I will need some help." [OOC: Search 16, Spot 26]
