Cadmar crouches next to Cassandra and asks how she is. The young witch tries to answer but a series of high pitched chirps and squeaks are all that escape the mask. The paladin can see a sadness in Cassandra's eyes but she has been able to eat and she has not lost any of her strength. She puts her arms around his neck and rests her head against his heart for a moment.
Kedarn casts his protection on Elerinn and Cassandra and the others break camp. The party continues down the Spice Trail. The sun shines in an azure blue sky. Even though it is cold, there is strength in it's rays which warm the faces of those that look up.
The morning is spent climbing higher into the hills, but as the sun passes overhead, the party begins the descent towards the distant river.
Andrath hears a commotion from 200 feet down the trail. He spies three individuals arguing loudly, apparently about how to best extricate a wagon that has slid off the trail. "No! Turn the wheels the other way!" cries one as the other two wrestle with the ungainly wagon. They are too engrossed in their difficulties to notice the rogue.
Elerinn Sunday March 7th, 2004 5:52:03 PM
Elerinn thanks Kedarn for his help, but still hopes the weather is going to improve for it makes him somewhat sad. During their decent towards the distant river, it indeed improves a bit and this makes the small gnome smile a bit. When Elerinn sees his friend Andrath with a concentrated look on his face, he asks him what he hears.
Alkali Sunday March 7th, 2004 10:13:30 PM
Alkali walks along the trail, and stops when Andrath heres a noise. "What's going on?"
Cadmar Monday March 8th, 2004 4:53:15 AM
Cadmar, not yet sure what is it that has stopped the party, remains silent and wary, stepping closer to Cassandra. He thinks he hears voices in the distance. Most unusual. What would anyone want to do during wintertime in the middle of Culverwood?
Lorth Monday March 8th, 2004 10:34:46 AM
Lorth moves up to the front of the line, near Andrath.
Kedarn d20+5=19 d20+5=23 Monday March 8th, 2004 4:55:52 PM
Kedarn looks to the others then says "stay alert and be ready to support me. Let us continue and I will see if I can help them. Lorth stay with me, the rest follow behind trying to stay out of sight. Remember we need to stay within roughly 100 feet of each other."
Kedarn then heads down the trail as if he is traveling with Lorth as his only companion. As Kedarn gets close he will ask "having some trouble there?"

Elerinn, Alkali, Cadmar and Cassandra wait for the party's scout to report his findings. Lorth moves to the front of the line, near Andrath, but before he can learn what the rogue has to report, he is pulled forward by the cleric.
Kedarn and Lorth draw the attention of the three working to right the wagon. While the half-elf who gave the commands sizes up the cleric and the paladin, the other two crane their necks to see if there is anyone behind the two adventurers.
Kedarn makes his inquiry, and notes that all three are half-elves. They seem to be having difficulty handling the oxen who bellow and resist their urgings. The apparent leader wears a dark cloak that covers a fine embroidered vest.
"Who are you, sneaking up on honest folk like that?"
Cadmar Tuesday March 9th, 2004 7:34:45 AM
Cadmar doesn't really believe the three half-elves are any threat, but he stays behind until Kedarn gives "all clear".
Lorth Tuesday March 9th, 2004 7:50:09 AM
Lorth seems a bit taken aback at the thought that he was 'sneaking' and says, "Sorry to have startled you good sirs, but perhaps my friends and I could be of some assistance to you and your wagon."
Alkali Tuesday March 9th, 2004 3:24:36 PM
Unable to hold back his curiosity, Alkali rushes foward to greet the strangers. "You guys need help with that?"
Elerinn Tuesday March 9th, 2004 5:42:25 PM
Elerinn follows his friends towards the half-elven strangers and is ready to help wherever he can.
Andrath d20+10=13 d20+10=12 d20+11=21 Tuesday March 9th, 2004 6:34:14 PM
Following Kedarn's direction, Andrath slips off into the forest along the right side of the trail, moving slowly through the snowy bush. He tries to circle around to arrive about 30' into the forest beside the stranded wagon, so that he can clearly hear what is going on, but not be seen from the trail. He keeps his eyes open for potential ambushes. (The 'stranded wagon' trick was a regular bandit trick used by the thugs that he used to hunt when he was with the city watch.)
[OOC: Hide 13, Move silently 12, Spot 21.] However, due to his unfamiliarity with forest situations, his sneaking doesn't turn out as well as he would have hoped.
DM Bob & Carla d20+1=18 d20+4=20 Wednesday March 10th, 2004 8:04:59 AM
Kedarn, Lorth, Alkali and Elerinn push forward towards the stranded wagon and the three half-elves. Lorth apologizes for startling them and offers his assistance and that of his 'friends'.
Cadmar remains further back on the trail and remains hidden with Cassandra, while Andrath tries to sneak up on the wagon from the side. The rogue gives his position away and as the two behind the wagon turn to face him, he notes that both are well armed and wear dark leather armor beneath their cloaks.
"Who are you? Step out from there" the two half elves call out in unison. "Is this also a friend of yours?" the leader asks Kedarn?
The half elf in charge of the wagon looks back and forth between Andrath and the four that have come down the path. He is clearly nervous and his hand reaches beneath his cloak towards the hilt of a weapon. "Is this your clumsy attempt at an ambush?" he directs his pointed question towards Kedarn. "If so, I assure you that we will defend our property."
Lorth Wednesday March 10th, 2004 2:06:51 PM
"Ambush? Hardly...", Lorth looks bemused, "Let me introduce myself, I am Lorth a simple paladin, and I assure you that my companions and I have no interest in taking your property. We ourselves are on a quest and when we saw your cart and the trouble you were having, decided to offer our assistance. One of our companions is in the wood, as well as two of us who are still down the road a bit. We were only being cautious, no cause for alarm." He stops and looks over the cart, "Why don't we try and get your cart out of the ditch?"
Cadmar Wednesday March 10th, 2004 3:09:05 PM
Cadmar gently leads Cassandra towards the rest of the party. "They seem to be harmless enough."
"A simple paladin, Lorth?... You would have hard time convincing me that there is such a thing" he smiles.
Andrath d20+15=23 Wednesday March 10th, 2004 6:20:26 PM
After stumbling through the forest in a very unsneaky fashion, Andrath walks out to the trail, with his hand on the hilt of his as-yet undrawn sword. The elf says, "As my friend Lorth was saying, we were merely being cautious. I used to work for the city guard, and the occasional bandit group would use the 'stranded wagon' ploy to set up ambushes for wayward travellers. I was circling around to see if you had any confederates in the forest, waiting to ambush us. Clearly that is not the case, and so...here I am, back on the trail!" He carefully peers into the bush on the other side of the trail from which he has just exited, checking to see if anyone is hidden on that side. [OOC: Spot roll of 23.]
Elerinn Wednesday March 10th, 2004 6:31:36 PM
Elerinn remains quiet, waiting for the half-elves to calm down somewhat, for they are quite nervous, obviously.
Kedarn d20+3=18 d20+5=19 d20+4=17 Wednesday March 10th, 2004 8:19:47 PM

Cadmar and Cassandra follow after the rest of the group and make their way down the trail. Cassandra draws her cloak over her face to hide the mask from view and ridicule. Lorth and Andrath explain that simple prudence on their part should not be construed as malice and the party offers to help free the wagon.
The wagon master begs forgiveness for his rudeness and gladly accepts the offer of help. "If two of you could help push from behind and two could help with the front wheels I think we could make short work of this" he says.
Elerinn and Lorth move into position to push the cart from behind while Andrath and Cadmar try to straighten the wheels.
Kedarn hesitates to join in the endeavour. Something does not feel right, the cleric cannot put his finger on it, but not all is as it seems. Perhaps it is the rapier that the leader of the trio carries, not the kind of blade used by many wagon masters...too much finesse required... And why haven't they used the oxen to free the cart, the animals just stand and bellow.
Cadmar Thursday March 11th, 2004 3:01:47 AM
Cadmar, who didn't notice anything suspicious, busies himself with the wagon.
Kedarn d20+5=25 d20+5=13 Thursday March 11th, 2004 3:15:35 AM
Kedarn looks to the others then walks over by Cassandra and queitly says "Cassandra, I have a bad feeling please be ready to run if we are attacked." After a couple of moments Kedarn calls out "hook up the Oxen and have them help they are much stronger then all of us!"
Kedarn walks over to the edge of the trail and looks around for anything that might help. While doing this Kedarn will cast 'See Invisible' and then look around agian.

Elerinn looks at Kedarn and notices he isn't sure about this whole thing. The red-haired gnome thinks the travellers are harmless, but is nevertheless more cautious because of his friend's suspicion. He awaits for the half-elves to respond to Kedarn's suggestion, for the oxes would indeed be much more able to move the wagon.
Alkali d20=13 d20=15 Friday March 12th, 2004 6:39:51 AM

The half-elves manage to straighten out the harnesses and traces that attach the oxen to the wagon. As they pull at the animals, Cadmar, Lorth and Andrath straighten the wheels and heave. Creaking and groaning, the wagon is edged back onto the narrow road that is the Spice Trail.
Alkali, Elerinn, and Cassandra watch.
Kedarn casts his spell and looks about. His sharp eyes pick up nothing more than the tracks of some small mammal, and the brush of backsweeping wings where a predator swooped down to catch it's dinner. Alkali's companion takes to the air but finds nothing from above.
At first the leader of the half elves does not answer Alkali's question. He busies himself making an inspection of the road-worthiness of the wagon before climbing aboard. "Simple merchants" he says once he is seated, "bound for Jarlswolf with supplies."
The leader gives the reins a quick snap, and the wagon lumbers forward. "Thanks for all your help" he calls out as the other two clamber into the back of the wagon.
Alkali watches the oxen make slow but steady progress up the trail. Yet, something nags at him. He has the distinct impression that the three half-elves have not had alot of experience handling the animals.
Lorth Friday March 12th, 2004 10:08:36 AM
(OOC: Are they heading the correct direction, towards Jarlswolf?, as thats where they said they are going. Also do the wagon tracks come from the opposite way?)
Lorth nods, "Anytime friends. Good to see some travelers on the road. Perhaps you would care to break for lunch with us? Share some tails of the road?"
Kedarn Friday March 12th, 2004 3:42:40 PM
When the half-elves are out of hearing range Kedarn looks to those that were at the wagon and asks "did any of you see what they are transporting? I have the feeling that something is not right with them but I can't peg what it is."
Elerinn Friday March 12th, 2004 7:07:08 PM
Elerinn nods in agreement of Kedarn, but remains quiet. He is unable to discover why he has a strange feeling about the travellers, too.
Cadmar Saturday March 13th, 2004 6:09:45 AM
Cadmar looks after the departing wagon.
"Did you, by any chance, check if they were evil, Lorth?..."
"I just hope we won't find bodies of real merchants further down the road."
Alkali Sunday March 14th, 2004 9:35:41 PM
Alkali looks up at his hawk and scowls. "I have a feeling that cart didn't belong to them. After all, wouldn't they have more control over their own animals? And they did run off in such a hurry... Either something dangerous is here, or they were bandits..." Alkali then shrugs. "Cassandra's more important then any of that though. The faster we move the better"
DM Bob & Carla Monday March 15th, 2004 7:45:57 AM
The party watches the wagon with its cargo and the three half-elves lumber slowly around the corner on it's way towards Jarlswolf. The party members wonder aloud about the true nature of the half-elves and the uncertainty they all sensed.
With the wagon gone, and Alkali's reminder about Cassandra's plight the party heads south towards the Peaseblossum River and Pullman's Crossing. One hour down the trail Andrath spies three figures by the side of the road.[OOC assumed the same marching order]. The shorter of the three is crouched over the largest, while a slender youth hops about anxiously.
Unknown dwarf Monday March 15th, 2004 4:37:04 PM
At a comment from the youth, the shorter figure rises and turns toward the oncoming group. He issues a curt command to the boy, and steps forward, placing himself between his two companions and the party.
It is a black bearded dwarf, wearing dull black breastplate and carrying an unadorned, dull black shield. He pulls a massive waraxe from its sheath and waits for the group to close.
"State your purpose," he calls bluntly, as you enter hailing range.
Andrath Monday March 15th, 2004 10:40:56 PM
Andrath frowns at the dwarf's abrupt and rather rude greeting, and answers, "Our purpose, sir dwarf, is our own. We are merely travellers who have happened to cross your path. I assure you that we mean you no harm."
Andrath takes a closer look at what is going on, with the other two figures. "What has happened here?" he asks.
Kedarn d20+5=15 Tuesday March 16th, 2004 12:36:07 AM
"As my friend here said we mean you no harm . We are just a group of travellers out to try and help a friend in need." Kedarn calmly tells the dwarf while approaching with his hands away from his weapons and in the open.
When closer to the dwarf Kedarn will look to see if he can spot any emblems that might show an affiliation. Afterwards Kedarn will look at the two others with the dwarf.

Cadmar joins Andrath and Kedarn. He is not very pleased, because deep inside he already suspects that the party will have to take another detour from their way to Wyrmsfut. But there is adventuring, and then there is duty.
"What happened here?" He asks calmly. "Why is this man laying on the ground?"
The ranger sighs. He suspects he already knows the answers.
Lorth Tuesday March 16th, 2004 11:20:09 AM
Lorth looks at Cadmar, "I'm sorry, I don't do that unless someone asks or gives me a reason. I didn't see any reason to do it, sorry. It is sort of intrusive."
Lorth waits for the situation to develop after coming to the gruff dwarf.
Alkali Tuesday March 16th, 2004 12:57:40 PM
Alkali walks over and observes the three travelers.
Elerinn Tuesday March 16th, 2004 6:28:22 PM
Elerinn observes the three strangers, especially the gruff dwarf. He looks at Cassandra, knowing she is in pain, be it physical or mental. Because of this, the red-haired gnome hopes the journey can be continued as quick as possible.
DM Bob & Carla Tuesday March 16th, 2004 7:04:22 PM
The party assembles around the dwarf, the boy, and the prone man beside the road. Kedarn spots no insignia on any of the three but does note a vivid purple mark on the man's right temple and the early signs of swelling.
The boy kneels beside him "Father, are you all right?" he pleads. Cassandra leaves Cadmar's side and goes to the man's assistance. She adjusts her cowl so that her face remains hidden and places a comforting hand on his shoulder.
The wagon...where is the wagon Marcus?" the man is clearly disoriented and unable to rise.
Dwarf d8+1=9 Tuesday March 16th, 2004 10:15:18 PM
The dwarf regards them all for a moment and apparently reaches a decision. Harmless, he thinks to himself. Stowing his axe, he turns back to the fallen man.
"I have but just arrived," he reports to the group. "Yon merchant was beset by brigands. I minister to him. The boy can explain further."
He waves abstractedly at the youth and returns to his task. Pulling out a wand, he taps the wounded man with it.

Marcus (DM Bob & Carla) Tuesday March 16th, 2004 10:29:08 PM
The young boy looks up at the surrounding throng when he realizes a question has been asked. His voice is high and trembles slightly with excitement.
"Well...we was makin' for Jarlswolf with our wagon of goods we was...when we come across this half-elf injured-like in the road. Dad steps down to help and two others comes from nowhere. I yells I did, but was too late and they laid me Dad out with a sap..."
The boy swallows hard and continues, "Told me they'd slit my throat if I followed..."
Andrath Tuesday March 16th, 2004 11:22:38 PM
Andrath shakes his head as the young boy tells his sad story. "So, it appears that those wagon-drivers were thieves after all. Maybe we should have questioned them more closely, but then, hindsight is always perfect, isn't it?" [OOC: By the way, I need to apologize for missing a few posts last week. I was out of town, and unable to get to a computer regularily to post.]
"So, do we go after the thieves, or not? Cassandra, can you hold out for another few hours? I expect that, given the thieves' apparent lack of driving experience, if we hurry, we can probably catch them before they get too far back to Jarlswolf. If Cassandra can wait, I vote that we hurry after the thieves."
Then he turns to the dwarf, and says, "Well, I suppose that we should introduce ourselves, since fate has thrown us onto this same road. My name is Andrath Silverhand."
Cadmar Wednesday March 17th, 2004 3:13:34 AM
"I'm Cadmar Gondaval. The brigands are an hour away." He points in the direction the party has came from.
"Look, let's not make hasty decisions. Suppose we catch up with them and overpower them. We probably should try to take them alive since they didn't kill this poor man, only beaten him up. Then we end up with three prisoners and a wagon to escort back to Jarlswolf."
"I guess we could take the prisoners with us to our destination. Actually, I even like the idea. Serves them right for waylaying travellers on the road."
"That leaves the problem of the wagon and a wounded wagon driver... If we took care of the brigands and recovered your cargo, do you feel you could reach Jarlswolf on your own?"
Kedarn d20+7=25 Wednesday March 17th, 2004 6:51:13 AM
Kedarn listens to what the others say then looks at the dwarf and says "Kedarn Shadowglade, cleric of Gargul. Are you willing to aid us in recovering the wagon and helping our lady friend?" A few moment s later Kedarn kneels down by the injured man and then examines him for any further injuries (heal 25.) While checking the gentleman Kedarn will ask him "if we help you get your wagon back will you and your sone be able to make it to Jarlswolf on your own?"
Lorth Wednesday March 17th, 2004 9:28:22 AM
Lorth is clearly aggitated that the brigands are getting away. "I say we go after them, those oxen are pretty slow. We can catch them when they break for the evening."
Elerinn Wednesday March 17th, 2004 10:43:27 AM
Elerinn introduces himself to the dwarf briefly and says, with anger in his voice: "By Wardd, curse our luck! We should have questioned these half-elves some more. My friends, I suggest turning back and catch up with them when they set up camp. I can send Qamaro here to scout ahead." Elerinn places his hand on the young boy's shoulder, despite his shorter height, and says: "We will get this cart back for you, everything is going to be allright. My friend Kedarn there is a competent cleric and he will be able to heal your father."
If everyone agrees, he asks Qamaro to scout the area for the half-elves and the cart and starts walking in the opposite direction.
Alkali Wednesday March 17th, 2004 4:15:53 PM
"Argh... I should have asked more questions. I knew they was something not right about those folks." Alkali agrees with the others and comments, "If nonviolence is the plan, we need a strategy to get them. Some sort of plan to trick them into a trap..."
DM Bob & Carla Wednesday March 17th, 2004 7:18:09 PM
Kedarn and Andrath introduce themselves to the curt dwarf who heals the wagon driver's wounds. Kedarn (the party leader) checks for any hidden injuries but finds none and assists the man to his feet.
Andrath suggests chasing down the thieves. Lorth and Cadmar are quick to agree and a discussion ensues about how to deal with the brigands once they are overtaken and captured. Alkali and Elerinn kick themselves for overlooking their earlier suspicions and agree that justice must be done. The sorcerer dispatches his raven to search for the three half-elves and the cart.
"Samuel's the name" announces the wagon master by way of introduction as he thanks the clerics for their assistance. The man suggests that he and his son Marcus can walk back to Pullman's Crossing and await the group there. "If you catch them, bring them to the crossing and I will make sure they are brought to justice in Jarlswolf. One of the boxes on the cart contains manacles for the gaol at Magpie Crossing. You can use them to make sure the rotters are secured!"
Cassandra gives Cadmar's arm a light squeeze and gently pushes him up the road. She moves to the side of Samuel and Marcus, a clear indication that she will stay with the wagon master and his son until the party returns.
Bralin Wednesday March 17th, 2004 9:54:56 PM
The dwarf nods silently at Samuel's words of thanks. Addressing the party, he says, "I am Bralin Stoneminder. I will join ye in this task. As for after..."
He looks up the road.
"Solitary travel appears dangerous on this road. Mayhap ye travel to Cinnamon Valley in the days ahead?"
Bralin starts up the road with the rest of the group.
Andrath Wednesday March 17th, 2004 10:42:22 PM
Andrath answers the dwarf, "Good to meet you, Bralin. Now, who is suggesting this non-violence? I figure we catch those thugs, and kick their thieving....well, anyways, we give them one chance to surrender peacefully, and if they don't, then we whack them until they fall over. If anyone is still breathing, we can use those manacles to ship them back to Jarlswolf!"
Then, without waiting for the rest of the party, Andrath heads back down the trail, chasing after the wagon.
Cadmar Thursday March 18th, 2004 6:44:51 AM
Cadmar has second thoughts about leaving Cassandra behind with two complete strangers. He stares intently at the man and the boy for a moment, as if trying to read their hearts [Detect Evil]. Finally, he sighs heavily, gives Cassandra a reassuring nod, and sets off after the rest of the party.
"Look, first of all, let's not be so self confident. They might prove to be a much tougher nut to crack then we think. After all, these three have travelled through Culverwood without fear of wolves and other predators."
"I have no doubt that they will try to resist, but I feel we should give them a chance to surrender anyway. Especially since we have the advantage of numbers. If they fight us we will have to beat them into unconsciousness or something, but just so that you know: assault and robbery are not hanging offenses in the Valley. We can't kill them - not unless it is in obvious defense of our lives - or we will be tagged murderers ourselves."
Lorth Thursday March 18th, 2004 9:09:50 AM
Lorth follows along as quickly as possible.
Kedarn Thursday March 18th, 2004 6:03:04 PM
Kedarn carefully listens to the others then comments "I think we should use the manacles as Samuel mentioned. I think we should approach them carefully and get around them so that we can keep them from escaping when we go to apprehend them."
Kedarn then looks to Bralin saying "As far as I know all of us make Cinnamon Valley our homes and would welcome you to live there."
Alkali Thursday March 18th, 2004 9:20:15 PM
Alkali agrees with the others. "Is there anything else magical we should be wary of? I mean if they use the manacles on us..."

Cadmar detects nothing out of the ordinary with Samuel and Marcus. The paladin watches the trio round the bend with some uncertainty before turning north to pursue the wagon.
The wagon master turns to answer Alkali's concern and identifies that several of the boxes on the wagon are destined for the alchemist's shop in Merrydale but that he does not know their contents.
With Andrath in the lead, Bralin, Kedarn, Elerinn, Cadmar, Lorth and Alkali all pursue the wagon. Some alternate walking and running, others continue on at a steady lope. [Fort save vs DC 14 or be winded and have to slow down].

Despite his shorter stature, Bralin keeps up with his longstriding companions. [Fort 20] The dwarf frowns somewhat when Cadmar mentions the 'no killing' sanction -- inconvenient law -- but says nothing.
He considers Kedarn's question for a few moments. The man makes sense. To work effectively, all should know the capabilities of his allies.
"I am a warrior," the dwarf replies, with a glance at his axe. "I also commune with the stone. The gods have granted me some divine powers. My intent is to use them for my craft (again with the axe), but in times of peace I have healing capability."
Bralin runs a little while, and thinks of something else.
"I can utilize items of arcane magic, although I've no natural ability in that regard."
To Kedarn's earlier comment about Cinnamon Valley, he says, "I seek not to abide here. I am charged to locate the kin of one Wynn Brightsong of Magpie Crossing."

I will hide on the other side of them and wait for your signal. Once you are sure that I am in position, then demand their surrender. If they don't surrender, then we fall back to Cadmar's plan. Also, if we manage to drop any of them, we can quickly heal them to stabilize them as unconscious."
He moves back ahead of the party, looking for the wagon. [OOC: Spot roll of 33 to see the wagon and the thieves before they spot Andrath.]
DM Bob & Carla d3=2 Friday March 19th, 2004 11:23:23 PM
The party makes good time as they follow the wagon. They have been in pursuit for a good part of the afternoon but the sight of a familiar raven gives them hope that they are close.
Qamaro flies to Elerinn's hand and the two speak. Elerinn learns that the wagon is very close, still lumbering north towards Jarlswolf. The gnome passes the news to the others but cannot keep up with the taller folk and stops to catch his breath. [OOC Elerinn will catch up with the rest of the party in 2 rounds]
Andrath notes the tell tale sign of oxen, steaming in the center of the road and knows the cart must be just around the corner. The rogue raises his fist in the air before leaving the trail in an attempt to slip ahead of the bandits. [Andrath: please roll a hide/move silently]
Lorth, Bralin, Cadmar and Kedarn hear the creaking of the wagon and the labored sound of the oxen up ahead, but the trail weaves it's way through the rugged hills and the party remains hidden from the wagon. It can't be more than 50 feet ahead of you.
Andrath d20+10=26 d20+10=14 Friday March 19th, 2004 11:36:39 PM
Andrath spots the steam coming from the oxen, and signals the party as he had arranged. Then he slips off the trail to the left side, trying to circle around the wagon and move back beside the trail on the other side of the wagon. [OOC: Hide 26, Move silently 14] He pulls his swords quietly from their scabbards as he moves through the forest beside the trail.
Cadmar Saturday March 20th, 2004 4:49:28 AM
Cadmar takes a long polearm off his back. It has three nasty looking spikes on the end. His face is unreadable. He looks behind, waiting for the rest of the party to catch up with them.
Then he strains his ears, waiting to hear Andrath's voice.
Bralin (Shield of Faith) Saturday March 20th, 2004 11:39:50 AM
As the group comes to a halt, Bralin also silently pulls out his waraxe.
When the rest of the group catches up, he takes a moment to cast a spell, and is encased in a shimmering blue light.
The dwarf gives Kedarn a quick nod. He is ready.
Kedarn Sunday March 21st, 2004 6:48:40 PM
Kedarn readies his bow then waits for Andrath's signal.
Elerinn Monday March 22nd, 2004 3:20:06 AM
Elerinn feels renewed strenght when the loyal raven tells him the cart is really close now. He catches up with the others, but sees they, somehow, already discovered this for themselves. The gnome regrets he isn't the first to discover the stolen cart, but readies himself for battle, nevertheless.
"We will give them the change to surrender. But if they don't, we will be ready for them. May Wardd be with us.", he whispers while waiting for Andrath's signal.
Alkali Monday March 22nd, 2004 6:36:32 AM
Alkali stays behind the crew, drawing out his sling. He awaits the skirmish.

Andrath moves through the forest, keeping to the shadows and remaining unseen. The snow is deep off the trail and the going difficult. More than once the elf breaks through and the sound of the snow giving way seems alarmingly loud to him. If those riding the wagon hear him they seem unconcerned, for the wagon continues on it's slow plodding course.
Andrath moves ahead of the wagon and into position.
The rest of the party prepare themselves for the confrontation and follow behind the wagon, just out of view.
[OOC both Andrath and the rest of the party appear to be waiting for the same signal:)]
Cadmar AC19 HP25(25) Shield d100=8 d100=97 Monday March 22nd, 2004 7:49:49 AM
Cadmar looks around, making sure his friends are ready. Then he draws a circle on the snow with the tip of his ranseur, curses under his breath, and repeats the gesture, this time satisfied from the effects [casting Shield; first spell spoiled by chainmail, second casting successful].
Then he resolutely strides forward, trying to catch up with the wagon. When he is noticed he raises his hand and says:
"Hold on for just a moment!..."
Bralin (ac 19, shield of faith) Monday March 22nd, 2004 10:15:01 AM
Bralin follows Cadmar. When the man hails the wagon, he swings around to his right and continues forward.
Should the wagon stop, the dwarf intends to walk to the front of it and grab hold of one of the oxen's reins.
He ignores any comments from the elf gallery.
Lorth Monday March 22nd, 2004 1:49:19 PM
Lorth stays near Cadmar with his warhammer and shield at the ready. He waits for the situation to develop.
Elerinn Monday March 22nd, 2004 4:43:38 PM
Elerinn watches the half-elf who appeared to be the leader earlier and readies himself for his response. To his own surprise, the gnome feels he is already feeling the rush of combat. He tries to ignore this feeling, for the half-elves should be given a fair change to surrender without any blood being shed.
Kedarn (AC 17) Monday March 22nd, 2004 7:13:10 PM
Kedarn will move up towards the wagon and call out aswell "Hold up there!"
Andrath (AC 18, 24 hp) Monday March 22nd, 2004 7:45:39 PM
Andrath moves a little ahead of the wagon, glad that his friends are calling out to the wagon to stop. He waits, hidden slighty off the trail, to see how the confrontation develops. He quietly puts away his two swords, and readies his bow and masterwork arrows. "I sure hope that they surrender," he thinks to himself, "although, after the way that we fought that last fight, I feel better about our ability to take these three on, if we need to."
DM Bob & Carla d20+5=20 Monday March 22nd, 2004 11:35:02 PM
Cadmar and Kedarn overcome the creaking wagon and hail the half-elf driver, who reigns in the slow moving oxen. Bralin easily grabs a strap of leather that is part of the gear worn by the animal closest to him. It does not struggle, and looks at him with warm brown eyes. Small puffs of steam escape it's nose and mouth making little clouds in the cold, still air.
The two half-elves riding in the wagon slide out, landing with a crunch on the hard packed snow. Each pulls a longsword as they face those closing in behind the wagon. The sun, low in the western sky, is reflected in the weapons.
"Who are you to challenge an honest merchant?" calls out the driver eyeing the human and the elf who have moved up beside the wagon. "What do you mean by this? Get off with you, and let me pass! I am a good, law-abiding citizen of the valley, let me and my fellows here, be."
Andrath, unseen in the shadows of the forest bears silent witness, his bow at the ready.
Cadmar d20+1=7 Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 8:17:43 AM
Cadmar recalls the boy telling the party that the attackers used a sap. He briefly glances over the half-elves hoping to notice the weapon [Spot 7, not likely]. If he sees it, he points it out to others.
"My, my. Mighty defensive, aren't we? It's almost as if you had something on your conscience." he says in a sarcastic tone of voice. Then he bites his lip and concentrates on sensing evil in the self-proclaimed merchants [Detect Evil].
Lorth Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 9:37:40 AM
Lorth's hand holding his warhammer goes to his temple and he also concentrates on detecting evil.
Bralin (ac 19, shield of faith[rd3]) Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 12:14:36 PM
Bralin continues holding on the beast's reins with his shield hand.
The dwarf stares at the driver stoically while waiting for the talking to end. While he waits, he tries to gauge if he can strike the driver without having to climb up into the wagon, and if not, how long would it take to mount the wagon and get to the loud elf.
Andrath (AC 18, 24 hp) Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 12:47:47 PM
Andrath waits for the confrontation to develop, either resulting in the thieves' surrender, or the (more likely, in his mind) combat. He nothces an arrow, draws the bow back, and takes a careful bead on the wagon driver still sitting on the bench, and doing all the talking.
Elerinn Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 1:55:01 PM
Elerinn sees his more faithfull friends concentrating, a sign that they are trying to discern if the half-elves are evil. He awaits their judgement, but doesn't think it is very like the half-elves have any good intentions. The red-haired gnome concentrates on the leader, ready to react to any hostile movement.
Kedarn Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 7:12:37 PM
"Someone claims that you attacked him and took his wagon. To straighten this out come with us. If you are truly the owners of this wagon the truth will come out on your side." Kedarn calmly tells the leader of the half-elves. Kedarn then looks to the two approaching with their longswords drawn and says "put up your blades."

Alkali Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 8:47:09 PM

Cadmar and Lorth detect the faint presence of evil and sense that the half elves will do whatever they can get away with if it suits their purpose. Bralin realizes he will have to climb into the wagon in order to strike at the half-elf driver.
"Now fellows, what do you mean by this turn of events?" the half-elf asks in a calm voice, as he rises from his seat and makes his way across the back of the wagon, stepping over and around the boxes. "First you help me and my companions, and now you accuse us?" The talker drops over the side of wagon, "It is getting dark, and we have far to travel before we reach Jarlswolf. I have no intentions of turning this wagon around." He manoeuvres behind Cadmar, drawing his rapier and growling, "you will be sorry for your interference in my affairs!"
Alkali and Lorth look on in horror as the two bandits strike out at Cadmar and Elerinn. Having positioned himself opposite the driver, with Cadmar trapped between, the first half-elf laughs as he lands a nasty blow against the paladin of Domi (Hit AC 24, nat 20! crit 23, 7 dmg + 2 flanking dmg = 9). The second attacker swings his sword on the small spell slinger, causing a stain of blood to spread out from the nasty gash on Elerinn's side (Hit AC 15, 3 dmg)
Bralin can only hear the commotion, while the driver has dropped completely from Andrath's sight.

Andrath thinks to himself, "Well, it appears that the thieves have shown their true colours, and now they will be covered in the colour red."
Andrath steps out from the bushes, and moves quietly down the trail, to within 30' of the Bandit leader. [OOC: He can move up to 30' if necessary, but will only move the bare minimum to be within 30' of the leader, so that his point blank shot feat will apply.] He lets fly with his masterwork arrow at the unsuspecting leader, past Kedarn, hoping to catch the leader by surprise. [OOC: His total to hit roll is +9, but -4 shooting through Kedarn's square, and -4 for shooting into combat. Still hit AC17, for 10 hp damage, plus a further 8 hp damage if it is a sneak attack.]

[Uh oh, Bob & Carla, things get a little bit complicated this round. Cadmar is wielding a reach weapon and is entitled to an AoO when the bandit leader approaches. He is certainly not going to stand by and let the rogues set up a sneak attack on him. He uses this attack to disarm the bandit leader: Improved Disarm, so no AoO from the enemy, 2h weapon, +2 from ranseur: disarm check 24 vs bandit's 14. When the bandit leader reaches Cadmar he no longer has the rapier in his hand. Not sure if the crit you rolled against Cadmar actually happens?]
Having knocked the weapon from the hand of the bandit leader, Cadmar steps to the side [5ft step SW, so both BL and B1 are 10ft away from him] and easily deprives the other bandit of his sword [disarm check 27 vs B1's 12].
"You are pathetic. Better give up now or we'll stop pulling our punches."
[Note that if B1 tries to pick up his weapon he will provoke an AoO from Cadmar. The ranger will use it to disarm him again - please roll for me if that happens.]
Lorth d20+2=9 d20+2=17 Wednesday March 24th, 2004 7:48:22 AM
With his shield up in front of him Lorth yells loudly and runs past Elerinn at bandit #2.
(OOC: I am attempting an overrun. Bandit #2 gets an AOO, and can choose to move out of Lorth's way if he wishes. If he does this Lorth stops 5 feet behind him. If he doesn't move, he needs to beat a DC 9, str or dex check. If he loses he's knocked prone and Lorth stops 5' past him, if he wins he can make a str check against Lorth's DC 17. If he wins that he knocks Lorth prone in the square 5' diagonal in front of B1. If we both fail Lorth just stops in the square 5' diagonal to him in front of B1.)
Bralin(ac 19, shield of faith[rd4]) d20+9=17 d10+4=12 Wednesday March 24th, 2004 8:13:14 AM
Seeing the driver get up and move to the back of the wagon, Bralin tenses.
Hearing Lorth's yell, he reacts.
The dwarf moves straight back to where the yell came from and sees the battle unfold. The time for talk seems to have concluded.
Bralin moves straight at the bandit the paladin is dealing with(Bandit #2), and brings his axe about in a nasty overhand chop.
[atk B2 (standing or prone, it don't matter to Bralin) - hit ac 17, 12 hp damage]

The bandit leader who had not initiated an attack, but had only drawn his rapier when confronting the party, gets an odd look on his face. He drops his weapon, bringing his hand to his chest. A stain of blood spreads across his embroidered vest, from where the point of an arrow protrudes. (10 dmg from Andrath) Before he can react to the rogue's attack, he becomes paralyzed and freezes in place, a look of horror fixed on his face (Will Save 4, failed vs Kedarn's Hold Person).
Cadmar gets the last laugh on Bandit #1. After sustaining injury from the half-elve's long sword, he takes a step to the side and disarms the fellow.
Lorth makes a brave run at Bandit #2. The rogue avoids the paladin (Dex 12, success) and takes a swipe at him, slicing through his chain shirt (AoO Hit AC 18, for 3 dmg). Before he can lift his sword for another attempt, his sword arm is nearly sundered from his body at the shoulder as Bralin brings his axe down. The screams of bandit #2 fill the air.
Bandit #1, disarmed and with nowhere to run, lifts his hands to shoulder height, palms out. Looking at Cadmar, then Alkali, he announces, "I'm no hero. You'll get no more fight from me!"
(DM Carla: An AoO was not provoked when BL drew his rapier. (p. 141 PHB) I can see how it might not be clear in my post, that it was B#1 who was attacking with his sword, and not BL. BTW, BL has a higher check (but still would not have beat Cadmar with the 'take 10' rule!) The party took a pass on the inititive to attack when they entered into parley, and thus would have been flat footed (no AoO) and open to attack by the bandits. Only B#1 and B#2 took advantage of this. Very sorry for the confusion. Play on...)
Kedarn d20+3=19 d20+7=20 Thursday March 25th, 2004 5:26:03 AM
Kedarn goes over to the wagon while taking out rope from his backpack then ties up the bandit leader (hands behind his back (tied at wrists and elbows), gag in mouth) (use rope: 19.)
Kedarn says to the others "lets get them tied up and get going."
When done Kedarn will go over to the bandit that is bleeding and do some healing on him to stop the bleeding and keep him alive. (heal 20)
Elerinn Thursday March 25th, 2004 5:50:40 AM
Elerinn stands silent, with a surprised look on in face. The fight has been ended almost immediatly after the bandit leader drew his rapier and the only thing that reminds of the battle now is the gash in his right arm.
The gnome looks at Kedarn, who ties up the bandit leader and then suggests to take the cart back to the farmer and his son. "Perhaps they will be able to bring these bandits to Jarlswolf, so we can continue our search for the man that can help Cassndra?"
Cadmar AC19 HP16(25) Shield Thursday March 25th, 2004 6:10:41 AM
Cadmar glances down at his wound. Hurts like blazes, but does not bleed that bad.
"Smart fellow." he mentions as he passes the bandit who surrendered. "Somebody take care of him, will you?"
Cadmar's first attention is turned to the bandit brought down by Bralin's axe. He kneels by the half-elf and, if the life hasn't still escaped him, ties up his wound [Take 10 on Heal to stabilize: 16].
"You surely wield a mean axe, mister dwarf. This chop would have killed a bear."
Once the situation is under control Cadmar searches the wagon for manacles. While he is doing that he takes a general look around the vehicle, curious what the trader might be bringing into Jarlswolf.
Bralin d8+1=2 d8+1=9 Thursday March 25th, 2004 8:08:45 AM
Eyeing the screaming bandit impassively, Bralin cleans the blood off his axe.
While the others are bothering with the bandit's arm, the dwarf pulls out a wand, and taps Cadmar with it. [Cure light wounds, reroll the 1, 9 hp healed]
He nods in silent acknowledgement of the man's praise. "I will guard them until the manacles are recovered," he states.
The dwarf will watch over all three bandits, his face expressionless as he catches the eye of each one in turn.
Lorth Thursday March 25th, 2004 10:33:38 AM
Since all his companions look ok, Lorth walks to the bandit leader, "This is going to hurt", he says, then he breaks off the arrow and pulls it out. He then calls upon the gods to stop the bleeding. (OOC: Lay on hands for 1 point) If the other bandit that Bralin chopped is still bleeding he prays over him too. (OOC: Lay on hands for 1 points)
Alkali d20+2=20 Thursday March 25th, 2004 6:48:33 PM
"Well I guess that's all three of 'em. I hope they didn't bring any friends." Alkali walks over to the wagon to examine if any damage was done to wagon or its goods. "You bandits didn't take anything right?" Alkali walks over and looks over each of the bandits for any items that should be taken away from them. (Search 20)
Andrath (AC 18, 24 hp) Thursday March 25th, 2004 7:43:03 PM
Andrath hurries over to the wagon, stowing his longbow and drawing his sword. He holds the point of the blade to the throat of bandit #1. He snarls and says, "Kneel down, or I will strike you down! I dealt with your kind before, when I was in the city guard. You are nothing but common thugs; real sure of yourself against helpless wagon drivers and their children, but you show your yellow bellies against real resistance! Well, now you'll get the chance to spend some time in the dungeons."
"Cadmar, did you find those manacles yet?"
DM Bob & Carla (Will Save vs Hold Person) d20+1=6 Thursday March 25th, 2004 9:08:24 PM
Kedarn uses his rope to bind the bandit leader. Lorth breaks off the arrowhead protruding from the bandit's chest and pulls from the fletched end, removing the missile. He lays his hands on the half-elf as does Kedarn. The flow of blood is staunched, but the expression on the fellows face doesn't change.
Cadmar turns his attention to the bleeding bandit #2 and is able to stabilize him. The half-elf groans and closes his eyes.
Bandit #1 watches Bralin as the newcomer tends to Cadmar. When the dark eyes of the dwarf meet his, the bandit breaks off his gaze, and stares at his feet until he is made to kneel in the snow by an angry Andrath.
Cadmar finds a half dozen sets of brand new manacles in a wooden box under the wagon seat. As he and Alkali look around they find the wagon is full of wooden boxes, crates, barrels, and a few big canvas sacks. There are labels on the cargo indicating the destination for which they are intended. Cadmar recognizes the names of some of the towns such as Jarlsworth, Rowena, and Magpie Crossing. Alkali observes the bandit leader has a wand of some sort tucked in his belt, and all three have bulging money pouches.
Elerinn suggests the party return the wagon to it's rightful owner, and continue on their quest to help Cassandra.
There is not much daylight left, but the sky is clear, and there will be a three quarter moon. After the heat of combat, the air carries a chill.
Andrath d20+11=29 d20+15=18 Thursday March 25th, 2004 11:44:47 PM
Andrath moves to put the manacles on the prisoners, and disarms them, taking all of their weapons, as well as the wand, and stashing these items in his backpack. He takes their money pouches, and throws them into the bottom of the wagon. He then ties a rope around their necks in a line, and ties it to the back of the wagon. He takes his lantern from his backpack and fills it with oil, attaching it to the side of the wagon, and lighting it. He says, "The night is bright enough to travel, so I think that we should make our way as quickly as possible to meet up with Cassandra and the others. Just be careful on the trail."
He moves ahead of the party, leading the way back to the Crossing, and keeping his eyes open. [OOC: Search 29, Spot 18]
Cadmar Friday March 26th, 2004 5:31:12 AM
Cadmar's wounds are completely healed up by Bralin. "Thank you!" he says, taken aback by the generosity of the newly met dwarf.
After the bandits are properly restrained Cadmar assists in their search. He takes out his book and adds the newly acquired items to the list [what do we have here? a rapier and two longswords? Were they wearing any armor? Do any of their items appear to be of exceptional quality?].
"Might be worth to check all of their equipment for magic."
"What are we going to do with their gold? It was probably taken from other travellers. Maybe we should just drop it off at the temple when we are back and let the clerics deal with anyone who would claim to be their victims? They have means of telling if such claims are true... What do you think?"
On the way back to meet with the merchants and Cassandra Cadmar rides in the wagon. "Let me see that wound of yours." he says to Elerinn. Then he does his best to patch it up [Lay on Hands for 3].
Bralin d20+5=12 Friday March 26th, 2004 8:10:13 AM
Bralin nods again at Cadmar. The dwarf finds it odd that the man is suprised about one ally healing another, but makes no sign. Definitely strange lands hereabouts.
"I will stay with them," he states flatly in his bass monotone. No one in the group has heard him use anything but the most minimal of inflection in his speech yet. Its nothing but a near robotic monotone, if he speaks at all.
The dwarf positions himself to the right of the three trailing prisoners so that his shield is between them. He throws his axe over his shoulder and marches beside them, centered on the middle one. With his darkvision, the night presents few difficulties, and he endlessly scans both the prisoners and the roadside for danger. [Spot 12]
Lorth d20=2 Friday March 26th, 2004 9:20:36 AM
Lorth says, "Really, we shouldn't be claiming their possesions, the law in town will decide what they must forfeit. I suggest we bring them their and let them face judgment." After saying his piece Lorth gets in line at the end of the procession and watches the rear. (OOC: I'm Blind! Spot: 2 Well I am human and it is dark =P )
Elerinn Friday March 26th, 2004 10:04:19 AM
Elerinn thanks Cadmar for taking care of his wounds and observes the stoic dwarf, not really sure what to think of the new ally. The gnome is surprised by his friends' interest in the bandits possesions and agrees with Lorth. "Like Lorth said, we shouldn't take their possesions. Let the people of Jarlswolf decide what to do with these bandits. If they decide to reward us for this, that's fine with me, but we ain't no bandits, are we? If we decide to ask the merchant to bring these criminals to Jarlswolf, we must tell him that he shouldn't take revenge on these bandits. I don't want to encounter one of them lynched, on our way back."
He pauses, white steam coming out of his small mouth and looks back at the trail. Then he continues, to no one in particular: "You think we can trust the merchant and his son?"
Elerinn then moves over the front of the cart, and walks along, next to the two huge oxes.
Kedarn d20+5=24 d20+5=15 Friday March 26th, 2004 5:04:23 PM
"Gather up their equipment and it goes with them to the authorities. When they are turned over to the law we will claim their belongings as our bounty for capturing them." Kedarn comments. Kedarn will take his normal watch during the night.

The way along the trail is not hard as the moon, large in the clear night sky reflects off the white snow. The lantern lit by Andrath and attatched to the wagon casts dancing shadows along the route. The docile oxen, with Elerinn as their small guide, pull the wagon and it's cargo back towards Pullman's Crossing.
Cadmar settles into the back of the wagon and takes inventory of the bandit's possessions:
2 longswords 1 rapier 3 sets of studded leather armour 3 shortbows 1 wand 3 money pouches with 30 GP each (total 90 GP)
Bralin escorts the manacled prisoners as they stumble along in the snow behind the wagon. He keeps a watchful eye on the group, who just shuffle along with their heads down. Lorth makes up the rear-guard.
It is a cold clear night, with almost no wind. Those who are vigilant spot the round glowing eyes of some small nocturnal mammals that stop their activities to witness the passage of the party. The forest is quiet and there is almost nothing to see until the trail starts to descend.
The smell of woodsmoke hangs on the air, and Kedarn can hear the sound of rapids, as if there is a river of fast flowing water nearby. Andrath spots a flash of light, as if a door had opened and closed, and then the glow of light behind a grimy window.
Cadmar Saturday March 27th, 2004 4:15:59 AM
"Well, I have to admit I was being greedy. Somehow it seemed to me that their weapons were more like tools of the trade than their loot. But there I go trying to justify myself. You are right, of course."
Cadmar spends the rest of the way sitting on the wagon in silence, not very pleased with himself. Not for the first time... After a moment he starts to wonder how Cassandra is doing and if they managed to light a fire.
Kedarn Sunday March 28th, 2004 4:53:13 AM
Kedarn casts detect magic on the gear from the bandits when they stop for the night. Noticing Cadmar's quiteness Kedarn will ask "is something wrong Cadmar?"
A little later Kedarn will go around and ask each person other than the bandits "how you doing? Do you need any healing?"
Cadmar Sunday March 28th, 2004 5:49:54 AM
"I'm worried about Cassandra. I was sure we would be back before nightfall."
Bralin Sunday March 28th, 2004 4:18:25 PM
The dwarf notes the glowing light and approaching stream, but says nothing. It seems this band will continue on, and Bralin is content with that.
He shakes off the cleric when Kedarn comes around.
After a few more hours, an idle thought creeps into his brain, and he drops his pace to fall in step with Lorth.
"What be your quest?" he asks the paladin, without any preamble whatsoever.
