The battle with mercenaries and the death of Mattison

DM Jan  d4+1=4 d4+1=2 d20+2=11
Wednesday March 17th, 2004 11:14:07 AM

No sooner does Zayne alert everyone to the possibility of the group not being alone - things start happening fast!

Rose, out of Dietrich's reach, pushes past Vauhwyt in her attempt to move toward the voice. She's immediately leapt upon by the huge form of the liontaur. That brings them both to the top of the sewerfall and in range of -
*BOOM* *BOOM*
Theodore immediately recognises what the light source is, as two magic missiles light up the immediate area. Rose is shielded by Vauhwyt, who takes the full brunt of it.
((6 DAM))
An arrow whistles past Zayne's head, and the light from the missiles temporarily illuminate 3 faces at the bottom of the 50 step sewerfall.

Olyn rushes forward also, but is blocked from moving down the steps. Warnings of what both he and Rose are hearing come from Dietrich and Vauhwyt.
((Olyn and Rose, please make another will save DC9 this time, to shake off the feeling that you need to rescue someone lost in the tunnel))

All goes dark again, and everyone smells singed fur.

Kernorn starts to pull like crazy away from Dietrich. He's firmly bound, but keeping him with the group will keep Dietrich's hands full.

And if that isn't enough, Vorelle hears a slight noise coming from behind.

It's party time!

Over at the Darts Tower - Piper hunkers down and fluffs out its feathers, still watching for Mattison. It begs the question though - is that the only way in and out of that place?

Dietrich is surprised by the sudden missile fire, for he wasn't expecting Mattison's guys yet. He swears and goes down for cover, holding Kernon's leash.
He trys to knock down Kernon, but even bound the bug guy moves so much that the fighter can't get a good hit (ac 8).
The soldier also trys to remember some appropriate tactic for this situation. (military knowlwdge 8)

Even though he wasn't expecting these exact turn of events, the young ranger was ready for something to happen.

Dropping back and leaping over the wemic, halfling pile,he curses leaving his bow at the apartment, and draws his hand axe.(Jump 16)

Seeing Dietrich caught up wrestling with Kernorn,"Dietrich, I need your'e bow and some arrows. There are at least three down there. Theo we need some magic too."

Once again he finds himself caught in a whirlwind of events with no time to think his way through.

"B-b-b-b-behind us!" Vorelle manages. She nocks an arrow and peers into the blackness behind the group. She can barely see her hand in front of her face, and since the enemy seems to know where they are anyway....."L-l-l-l-l?" she stutters, trying for Light? but not quite making it.

"Vauhwyt!" Theodore calls as his friend is struck by magic. He then hears Zayne's call for help and pulls forth a wand as he sets his face in determination.

He quickly moves forward and a cone of fire bursts forth from the thin stick in his hand.

(Burning Hands for 2 points of damge; save vs Reflex 14 is 1 point of damage. Don't know if magic reached bad guys or not. Moved 30 feet and spell reaches 15 feet. If not, at least it should give us a better idea of who we're facing. Also, I don't know how long it's been since Theo cast Mage Armor which lasts for two hours from the wasp fight.)

Vauhwyt (AC16 charging, HP13 of 19, Dex12 of 15) and Mookie (AC17, HP9)  d20+6=13 d20+3=19 d20+7=22 d20+5=10 d4+2=5 d6=1 d4+2=4 d6=2 d20+1=13 d4+2=4 d20+1=14 2d6(6+4)+2=12
Wednesday March 17th, 2004 11:44:10 PM

Vauhwyt sees Theo charge down the stairs and discharge a burst of flame at the attackers. "Wowsy," she thinks, "I didn't know he had it in him!"

"Come on, Mookie," she calls as she leaps off Rose. "We can't let Theo stand alone!"

Trusting Vorelle to hold the threat from the rear, the liontaur leaps down the stairs, and Mookie flies above her. As they had practiced, Mookie flies above and past the enemy, circling fast around from the rear (Mookie's Tumble check, if needed, is 13, and may suffer an attack of opportunity if the enemy has a weapon in hand). Mookie tries to distract the enemy (rolled 19 to Aid Another in combat).

Vauhwyt leaps onto an opponent that Mookie has encircled. The flanking charge is an attempt to land two paw blows. One of those hits home, for 5 hp, 6 total with some sneak attack damage. (The other paw, hitting AC10, does 6 hp if it hits.)

Holding her spear in both hands, Vauhwyt is alert for the chance to strike. If an attack of opportunity (as from moving or casting a spell) presents itself within 5 feet, then a paw attack hits AC13 for 4; if within 5 to 10 feet, then a spear attack hits AC14 for 12. That could be more if flanking or with sneak attack damage.) (This entire paragraph is for use only if an AoO presents itself.

Under attack, the group get to work.
In a mad charge, Theo and Macaw dash (Mage Armour will last another two rounds only) down the stairs and light up the neighbourhood. The spell is 'just' short, but manages to singe a few eyebrows and give everyone a better look at what they're facing -

A slight, hooded figure - #1
A tall, willowy-looking dude with a bow - #2
A half orc with impressively wide shoulders, armed with a club - #3

The eclectic mixture suggests these guys are mercenaries.

Vauhwyt's the next down the stairs, charging into the fray and connecting with one paw.
"*$@!!" growls the half orc.

Rose attempts a spell half way down the steps.
(Loretta, let me know what spell, then I can factor it in, along with my next post)

On the Upper level:

Olyn calls to Wardd to give the group an advantage, and everyone feels that little tingle of a Bless spell.
Zayne gets ready to go into whichever fray presents itself with his hand axe, while Kernorn nimbly dodges a blow from Dietrich that would knock him out cold.
Still wrastling with the entomologist - Dietrich's strategic mind goes to work. An assessment of the situation isn't easy - three of the party have disappeared down the steps to the right of him, and now Vorelle was warning of some unknown threat to the left.

The light is a 'little' better up here, (not like the gloom at the bottom of the steps) and Vorelle's eyes take in a solo figure as he steps into one of the hazy pools of dim light coming from a grate in the rounded ceiling.
He looks like Mattison, although his body language seems different, his stride more determined. He's about 50ft away and closing.

Back down at the bottom of the steps, the half orc takes a swing at this blasted liontaur that's landed right on his doorstep. A woman, too. Time to teach this chick some manners.
His club swings through the air, and the momentum makes him lose his footing!
(Sheesh)

The hooded figure sounds to be casting, and Mookie gets a dagger hurled in her(?)direction. it bounces off the wall and lands *plop* in the water.

Dietrich sees his friends running down towards the enemy and can finaly assess exactly how many of them are there. First of all, he must get Kernon quiet, so he trys to knock him down again (base attack + bless + flank); hits ac 14, for subdual damage 4.
If this is enough, he puts an arrow on his bow and runs to the stairs. He thinks: `From behind it's just one foe, Vorelle will take care of him!`

[OOC: Since the Armor spell has fizzled, I've reduced ACs for V and M accordingly!]

If a foe is throwing or casting within ten feet of Vauhwyt, she may get an attack of opportunity. Remember that in 3.5, Vauhwyt takes up a 10'x10' space -- including the longpear reach, that's 30'x30'. Possible AoO: hits AC13 for 10 (longspear).

Mookie continues to flank the Half-Orc. The familiar's distractions are not as effective this time (Aid Another roll fails).

Vauhwyt welcomes Rose into the fight. "Step next to Mookie, and we'll flank this bum!" she tells Rose.

Lashing out with her paws, Vauhwyt strikes hard at the Half-Orc. "Holy Wowsy Mother Of Piggy Dumps!" she shouts -- two crit threats! [Two natural twenties! Gee Whilikers! Follow ups hit AC12 and 18 -- I'll assume that one hits and one crits.] Her claws rip into the humanoid -- The crit (AC18) does (4+3) 7 hp with another 1 pt of sneak attack damage. The other blow does 6 hp damage with another 1 pt sneak attack damage. Total damage from claws: 15 hp.

Finally, the liontaur takes a five foot step back and pokes at the Half-Orc with her spear. That hits AC17 for 6 hp more damage plus 1 more hp sneak attack damage. (For 4d6 sneak attack damage over two rounds I did 4 hp total! But with two natural twenties and an 18 on attacks this round, I'm not complaining!) Total damage from spear: 7 hp. Total damage to Half-Orc for two rounds of combat: 28 if AC17, 21 if AC18, 18 if AC19-22.

[Jan, could you tell us their ACs?]

"Nice blood work, Boss," Vauhwyt's male familiar tells her.

"Thanks, Mookie!" she replies.

Then the young mage moves forward again and speaks words of magic. An explosion of color springs from his left hand into the enemy group.

(Readies an action to fire if the man continues to advance; hits AC 25 for 3 points. She will not fire if he stops.)

Friday March 19th, 2004 1:17:50 PM

Slippery as an eel, Kernorn (AC 16) manages to duck another blow from Dietrich.
"Let me go!" he implores the warrior.

Right about that time, Olyn's copper piece hits the floor and bursts into light, giving the group up top some good visibility.

Zayne and Vorelle face the oncoming Mattison (AC15). He's not for stopping, and so Vorelle's arrow joins Zayne's axe, and both hit the man.

Down at the bottom of the stairs - at the entrance to the continuing tunnel - its all fur, feathers and half-orc. The tussle between Vauhwyt and her assailant doesn't give anyone else much room to manouvre.
Macaw circles upward over the sewerfall steps to safety.
At this point, Rose can't get a look-in, or a dagger in, and Theo's colour spray spell doesn't get aimed as well as he'd have liked.
Still - he manages to miss Vauhwyt and Mookie, and if anyone could see anything down here, the half orc was now covered in jolly colours, and part of the enemy caster's robe didn't agree with his own personal dress code.

The half orc is down, injured and stunned after the drubbing from Vauhwyt and Theo's spell.

At this point, nothing seems to be coming from the enemy spellcaster - hiding in the gloom, but there's an archer back there in the dark who can see Vauhwyt, Rose and Theo silhouetted in the gray light of the sewerfall.
((6ft down that particular tunnel and you're in complete darkness))
((ACs for spell caster and archer are AC 15 and 17 respectively))

The archer sends an arrow firing out toward the light - aiming for Theo, slamming with deadly accuracy into the mage's chest for 7 DAM!

Meanwhile!

Up top, Dietrich, Olyn, Vorelle and Zayne face the oncoming Mattison.
The man's eyes twinkle malevolently and he extends a finger toward Vorelle.
Something about his eyes, and what lies behind them, promising all kinds of terrors - it hits Vorelle like a wave...

Theodore cries out and falls to the sewer floor with an arrow shaft protruding from his chest.

From up above, Macaw sees his master fall and screams in protest. The black bird zooms into the attack against the archer, fluttering and clawing at his face. (Hits AC 15, and thus misses)

Theodore desperately rummages through his backpack and pulls forth the potion given him by Olyn several days before. He gives the cleric a silent thanks and quaffs the vial. (Regains 2 HP to 3/8)

"Go after the mage," he shouts hoarsely to Rose and Vauhwyt. "Don't let him finish his spell." Then he drops the vial and prepares to pick himself back up and join the fray.

Dietrich AC 17; HP 13/13 blessed  d20+4=6
Friday March 19th, 2004 3:49:58 PM

Dietrich is astonished with Kernon's dexterity and let him go for now, as there is a much more urgent danger. The fighter hopes they'll get the bound man easily afterwards.

When he sees Mattison mad apearance and Vorelle running, Dietrich releases the arrow from his strong longbow, but in the darkness and confusion he misses. The knight puts the bow away and draws his powerful broadsword, preparing for hand-to-hand combat.

Friday March 19th, 2004 4:33:54 PM

Since it looks like the caster was affected by Theo's spray of colors, Vauhwyt turns her attention to the archer in the dark. Since she cannot see the shooter at all, she casts her Blood Lights spell (Vauhwyt's version of Dancing Lights). A glowing, vaguely humanoid shape appears down the sewer in the shooter's direction -- it seems to be flowing and dripping with blood. It sheds light as brightly as a torch.

In the light of the magic, Vauhwyt and Mookie use their remaining movement to approach and flank the shooter. Mookie flies (up to 80 feet) up, over, and behind (Tumble check is 23, so no AoO). Vauhwyt moves up to 40 feet towards the archer, stopping five feet away from the shooter (paw range). If he tries to back up five feet to shoot, he'll be in longspear range.

Since shooting provokes an attack of opportunity, if the archer tries to shoot, Vauhwyt's AoO hits AC 16 -- a miss.

Despite Zayne's words, Mattison's spell tears into Vorelle's psyche and causes her to turn around and get away as fast as she can.
Heading for the ladder, she feels the touch of Olyn, and the shiver of fear drifts away like leaves in the wind.

Kernorn, now released, chooses to hunker down into a ball on the walkway, huddled around his wasp box, his eyes tightly shut.

Mattison remains where he is, about 10 ft away. Dietrich's arrow flies right past. Mattison doesn't flinch. He cocks his head, looks at the axe and smiles at Zayne.
"Think I'm gonna walk right into that, kid?"

Right behind Zayne, comes the swish of steel as Dietrich brings another weapon to bear.

Meanwhile, down at the bottom of the Sewerfall steps and inside the tunnel -

Theo desperately struggles to heal himself after the devastating hit he took, while Macaw dives angrily into the deep dark of the tunnel.
Moments later, an eerie red light appears, dancing and flowing, lighting up the tunnel in two-tone black and red. Now the party can see their assailants - not the fine details, but enough to attack and defend themselves.
The half-orc is lying unconscious on the floor, and both Vauhwyt and Rose get their feet wet as they go charging into the fray, with Mookie and the smaller Macaw flapping along too.
Vauhwyt misses a swipe with one of her heavy paws, but somehow, the little halfling manages to stick it to the archer in the leg.

The archer has dropped his bow and pulled a wicked-looking sword, and he launches into Vauhwyt with it. He's obviously used it before - cutting through the liontaurs defences and slicing into her for 8 DAM.

The spellcaster appears to be huddled in a heap not far away.

Back up top -

Mattison speaks.
"I brought some friends," he says silkily, and his hand flicks back and forth, unraveling one of his spells. "It's surprising what you can find in the local graveyard at such short notice, and so amenable to one such as me."

Alongside him, the air shimmers. What was invisible, is now only shockingly too clear. Two little girls, both dressed in nightclothes, smile at Dietrich, Zayne, Olyn and Vorelle - their hair is mussed, as though they have been sleeping for a while. They would look pretty, if it wasn't for the fact that their faces looked so... feral.

One of them hisses, revealing nasty fangs, and leaps up the wall of the tunnel, climbing it effortlessly until she is almost upside down, crawling toward the party (the tunnel is 10ft high). The other stands before Mattison. She smiles also. It isn't pretty.

"Kill them, my pretty little spawn - kill them!" snarls Mattison.

"Boss!" Mookie shouts, as he senses that his master has taken a deep wound.

But Vauhwyt ignores him -- she has too much to do. "Rose, flank!" she calls. Then with a flick of a finger she taps a small button, activating a combat seal.

[NOTE: Everybody gets +1 to hit this round!]

Mookie tries to defend his master by distracting the archer: roll to Aid Another (defensive) succeeds, boosting Vauhwyt's AC by two to 16. "What a maroon!" the enlarged familiar says laughing, to taunt the archer. "What an ignoranimous!"

Mookie also takes a five foot step to maneuver so that there is room for Rose to flank as well.

Vauhwyt lashes out with paws (normally +1 to hit, +2 flanking, +1 bless, +1 seal) against the (AC17!) archer. One paw connects for 6 hp damage; the other misses. Then the liontaur takes her five-foot-step back and pokes at the archer with her spear -- hitting AC16, and scratching his armor but not drawing blood!

Finally, she shouts behind her, "Theo, make sure that mage is out of commission!"

Wardd's might in the half elf's voice sends the little vampire spawn hanging from the roof screeching away, back from whence she came.
The other one shudders for a moment, then looks at the cleric balefully.

Zayne and Vorelle both send projectiles toward Mattison. The arrow flies past, but the dagger hits.
Dietrich moves in quickly and cuts deep into the tiny little girl stood before him.

Down below -

Liontaur, halfling and two birds of different sizes continue their attack on the archer/swordsman.
Vauhwyt gets a good slam in with her paw, accompanied by a riotous cacophony of bird insults and screeches.
Rose moves into the attack but misses this time. (She'd have to run back up the steps to try and attack Mattison)
Meanwhile, Theo crouches alongside the slumped spellcaster.

The archer/swordsman looks to be faltering, but he's not dead yet, and swipes diagonally toward the liontaur, but slips into the water!

Theo gets a bit of a surprise.
"Boo," whispers the spellcaster, successfully evading Theo's attempts to pin him down (Check 18). He attempts to grab the already injured Mage for a touch attack, and his fingers slip off the sleeves of Theo's robe on this occasion.
(Dang ;) )

Back upstairs -

Olyn, Vorelle, Dietrich and Zayne face Mattison and his tiny doll-faced abomination.
The vampire spawn lashes out at Dietrich. She misses, but her eyes hold him, for after all, she's just a little girl, lost and alone, and...so hungry...
((Will Save DC 14 or be Charmed. Peter I think Dietrich gets a +5 bonus on that attempt because she's on the offensive))
The wound he gave starts to crinkle up, as though beginning to heal.

Mattison snarls, taking Zayne's bait - and attempts to hit him with a ranged Ray of Enfeeblement, and yet another of the enemy fails in his task the thwart our band of heroes!!

He keeps flanking and taunting the stumbling archer: "Hey, you goon! You're so clumsy, I can shoot off my mouth better than you can shoot off an arrow!"

Meanwhile, glad to still be standing, Vauhwyt takes a poke with her spear. Again it glances off the archer. Then she rears up and lashes out with her paws. But both attacks fail to even come close. "Well, at least I didn't slip like my opponent did," she thinks sourly.

Dietrich sees one vampire fleeing, but the other stands on his way and he had to strike at it. It was hard enough to attack the childlike undead, and when she looks in his eyes the fighter is almost overwhelmed with pity. But her crazy starring and slobbering for blood quickly remembers the suffering hardened warrior of the danger, and he can control himself.
He hears Olyns further prays (OOC I´m assuming the turn undead will make the vampire flee)and as the monster turns away, Dietrich charges MAttison with a battlecry, again putting his whole strenght on the strike (powerful attack).

The tiny little girl's expression changes to one of horror, and she seems to partially fade from view, and the disappear altogether.

Mattison is left to the mercy of the party, and none of it seems forthcoming, either from Dietrichs powerful sword blow, Zayne's acid tongue, or Olyn's holy words. He is already falling as Vorelle attempts to finish him off with her axe.
THUD.
He's down and dead.

The group up top are left without foes, but with a growing disquiet about what they've just seen.
Tiny vampires? From the local graveyard?
Perhaps thats another adventure for another time.

Right now there are other things to worry about.
Kernorn is still with them, huddled on the floor talking to his wasp.
"Told you he was bad. Told you, my pretty.."
And in the distance, sounds of combat can be heard coming from the bottom of the sewerfall.

(If going down the steps - one round before ranged attacks, two rounds for melee)

Down below, a short ways in the tunnel -

Vauhwyt, Rose and the birds do their dance with the archer/swordsman.
He's obviously injured, because his sword swing proves ineffective once again.

The half-orc is still unconscious.

Not so the spellcaster, who's fighting with Theo on the floor. The immediate vicinity erupts into flame as Theo aims the old burning hands spell point blank at his opponant.
"Ow!" yelps the spellcaster, managing to avoid some of the damage, but not all.
This time he grabs successfully at Theodore and zaps him with Shocking Grasp for 2 DAM.

Hearing the battle still raging below - Olyn, Dietrich and Vorelle race down the steps and get to a point where they could technically make ranged attacks - although it might be difficult with Vauhwyt and Rose in the way.

There's an unconscious half orc laid in the entrance to the tunnel. Vauhwyt and Rose are further in - fighting someone with a sword, with Theo and his spellcaster combatant somewhere in between - all visible in the eerie red light.

Vauhwyt and Rose's attacks slice into the already wounded archer/swordsman, and he falls dead.
On seeing that - Theo's opponant shrieks -
"Okay! Okay! Enough! Enough!"
He stops struggling.

Summing up the combat - robed spellcaster and half orc are alive, all the others are dead.

Up Top -
Zayne is left with the corpse of Mattison, and the still babbling Kernorn.
Zayne discovers that although there's a lot of blood, there's none flowing, which suggests that Mattison is as dead as a stone. There's some puckering on the skin though, distorted by Dietrich's sword blow across Mattisons chest - like some kind of brand, perhaps?

Her opponent falls dead, and Vauhwyt jerks -- you know how it's like when you are going up stairs without paying attention, and you get to the top step but you don't realize it, and you keep trying to walk up but there is no step there? Well, that's how Vauhwyt jerks, as her body tries to keep fighting although there is no one left to fight.

Then Vauhwyt stands stock still, and looks down at herself. Her paws are sticky with blood, and she is splattered head to toe. She hurts, and she begins to realize how great her danger was. "One more good cut, and I would have been a gonerr!" she mutters, her accent rolling in her throat.

The liontaur begins to shake, and she sits down abruptly.

"Someone tie and gag this one, otherwise he might still have some tricks up his sleeve." He breathes heavily and carelessly brushes a lock of hair from his sweaty brow.

Macaw has alighted on the dead archer's forehead and commences to peck at the man's flesh, taking his anger out on the corpse.

Its time to mop up - and tie up loose ends quickly.

Olyn starts patching everyone up, while Vauhwyt reels in shock. That arrow needs to come out of Theo's chest.

Vorelle notes that the half orc is on the verge of consciousness.
The spell caster has that look in his eye, like he might try something if he's left with an opening.

Dietrich discovers a large cloth bag - it contains 3 unlit torches, and two large, heavy-duty nets.

Rose finds 50 GP and a bag containing 5 pearls on the dead archer. He also has some light armour, the long bow, a quiver of arrows, and a broadsword.

As Zayne approaches the top of the steps, he sees Kernorn ahead, knelt down next to the dead figure of Mattison. He is laughing.

A quick decision is required regarding the prisoners, and what did Zayne see on Mattison's body?

Meanwhile, now that the adrenaline is beginning to subside, it may be noted that the "feeling" everyone had earlier - isn't there any more.

Mookie, seeing Vauhwyt is a little shell-shocked, takes matters into his own hands. Wings. Claws. Whatever.

"Jeezum crow, Boss," he squawks, "pull yourself together! We still have places to meet and people to go! And a bug to catch!" Whether it is the much-needed healing or Mookie's harsh voice, Vauhwyt blinks and snaps out of her stupor.

"You're right, Mookie. But first I have a few questions for the walking dead man over herre." Vauhwyt stalks over to the prisoner mage. She wipes her bloody paws on his shirt. "I've got blood from two of the three of you on me. Shall we make it three of three? Or would you prefer to answer some questions?" [Vauhwyt is trying to Intimidate the prisoner.]

Mookie flaps over to the mage, lands on his shoulder, and pulls out one of his hairs. "You better make friends with the boss, if you know what's good for you." [Mookie is trying to Aid Another to Intimidate, but his efforts do not help. (Roll 7)]

Vauhwyt, on the other hand, looms over the prisoner and is somewhat more effective. [The prisoner must make a roll of 1d20+level+Wisdom+bonus vs fear and meet or beat Vauhwyt's check of 25. If the prisoner fails, he treats Vauhwyt as friendly.]

"Now, tell me about this bug. Where is it, why do you want it, how did you hear about it? And tell me the truth about Mattison. Be helpful and you'll make it out of these sewers alive." Vauhwyt pumps the prisoner for as much info as possible.

"Friends, I don´t think it a good idea to try to catch the monster today. We were in a hurry because we had to stop Mattison, what we´ve allready done. The monster is dangerous and we should fight it with full magic and power, not weak as we´re now. Without Mattison we can surely wait one day and reduce our risks."

"Let´s interrogate these prisoners, decide what to do with them, and than go back to Kernon´s place and prepare for tomorrow."

"Also, we have to do something with the dead bodys. We can´t let them rotting here. May Gargul take their soul..."

The pulling of the arrow from Theodore's chest is too much for the poor mage and he feints into Olyn's arms. Only when the priest's curative powers wash over him does he regain his senses.

He manages to stand without too much effort and takes a deep shuddering sigh. "Thank you, Olyn." The cleric can see from the young man's eyes that Theodore is at a loss for anything better to say, though he desperately wants to. He opens his mouth to say more, but is interrupted by Zayne's plea to take a look at the dead Mattison.

Theodore notes that Vauhwyt has the mage under control and hikes up the steps to the still form of the treacherous half-elf and bends over him to examine his body. Unconciously, he fingers he hole in his shirt where the arrow pierced.

Vauhwyt interrogates the captured mage.

"If we knew where this stupid giant fly is, we'd have caught it by now!" snaps the spellcaster, putting on a sarcastic, indignant face.
"We were hired to catch it. Nothing more. Mattison said it might have magic. That's the only reason I'm here, otherwise that ugly mug sleeping on the floor would have been able to catch it. Don't know who Mattison is - don't want to. It doesn't pay to ask too many questions in this town, or are you new here and didn't know that? He told us there'd be gold, Gave us a down payment, and that was that."

Olyn gets that nasty arrow out of Theo while Dietrich rounds up stuff, and he and Vorelle make suggestions on what to do.

Zayne shows Theodore the mark he saw on Mattison, and Theo recognises it immediately.
Old Woldian.
Servant
Marteaus
Dominate

A decorative mark that looks like it was branded on with a hot iron.
A search of the unconscious half orc reveals no such mark. He looks clean.
However - Rose does find a small pouch on him with 10 GP in one pocket, and 2 daggers at his belt, along with the club.

Kernorn sits with his wasp, talking to it quietly at the top of the sewerfall steps. He then starts pointing upward and waving, for it seems passersby from above in the inhabited tunnels are leaning over the rail to see whats going on in the depths below.

What next?

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Monday March 29th, 2004 6:41:30 AM

Vauhwyt finishes her interrogation by telling the mage, "Well, even if you are just hired mercenaries, you still drew weapons and blood Below Ground. For that alone we'll take you to the Knives."

The liontaur asks for the mage's name and for the half-orc's as well. She cuts a good-sized lock of hair from each of them. "Insurance if you ever come after us again," she tells the mage.

Then Vauhwyt strips the mage of any items -- is he carrying a spell book? She adds this to the pile of loot -- everything from their defeated enemies, living and dead. "Make sure we get all there is to get," she says to everyone.

Vauhwyt suggests that the group should bring Mattison, the dead archer, the half-orc, and the mage to the Knives. If the undead girls are around (were they destroyed? Or did they just flee), bring those bodies too.

"If those undead girls were simply chased off, we'll have to hunt them down and kill them laterr," the liontaur says, with her accent beginning to show her fatigue.

"So let us take corpses and prisoners to the Knives now. Tell them what happened and then head home for cleaning and rest. We can detect magic and look over the loot at home. We should take Kernorn with us, but not surrender him to the Knives. He can help us find Edgar tomorrow."

"What do you all think of this plan, my comrades?"

Dietrich
Monday March 29th, 2004 9:52:09 AM

Dietrich likes Vauhwyt´s leonine leadership and suggestions and helps carrying them out. He is a little aware of going to the Knives right now, and expresses some concerns:
"for if the mercenaries have commited crimes by wearing weapons in this part of the city, so did the whole party.
Also, if Mattison was apparently a "Knive", who garantees that there are not other enemies infiltrated in the Knives? What if Zayne is right and MAttison was just one piece of the chess game. Revealing their position now would warn such enemies."
But in the end, he sees that there is no better alternative and he hopes the Knives will recognize them as their "employes" and not charge the party.

Theodore and Macaw
Monday March 29th, 2004 10:19:16 AM

"It's the same symbol from the scroll we took off of Ba'Bac." Theodore lets out a deep breath, and the normally comical look on his face is now quite serious. "Ba'Bac wanted to kill the prince's sweetheart and now Mattison wanted to kill the prince. Someone's trying to stir up the pot."

Theodore agrees with Vauwhyt's reasoning but Dietrich also has a point. In the end, the mage stresses caution but agrees that the Knives and the prince should be informed. "Perhaps if we speak with the same two guards that gave us the job. I doubt they would've wanted anyone getting in the way if they were on Mattison's side," he suggests.

Theodore bends down to relieve the dead Mattison of his possessions, placing them in his backpack. Macaw flaps over and perches on the evil half-elf's corpse as if he had felled the man himself.

There's a furor and a lot of astonishment as the group arrives at the Knives Tower with dead bodies and prisoners in tow.

How much information is the group prepared to share with the Knives at this point?

Questions are asked -
Who killed 'poor' Mattison and why?
Who are these others? Did they do the mysterious killings?
Is everything solved now?
Can folks walk around the tunnels in peace?

Piper hears 'apartment' and flaps off toward it, grateful for a chance to flex its wings and hopefully find something to eat.

So did Mattison. Some of his componants look a bit weird though - bones, a dirty piece of cloth that smells awful. Some dust of dubious origin, and a piece of raw meat that has a maggot on it, happily munching away.

A savoury pie seller's cart is parked up across from the Knives Tower. The smell wafting through the air is one of a tasty mix of meat and onions.

As for Kernorn, he seems to be everyone's best buddy all of a sudden, full of smiles, for reasons best known to himself.

Tuesday March 30th, 2004 6:13:48 AM

Vauhwyt speaks up before anyone else. "We think the original killer is still in the sewers. We didn't catch him yet, but we will tomorrow."

Mookie says, "Yeah, we're real close!"

"But we know that Mattison was hoping to use the killer for his own evil purposes. Look! Mattison was a servant of the evil god Marteaus!" She shows the evil branding and necromantic components.

Mookie says, "Yeah! Him and his goons attacked us! Here are the goons! They drew weapons and attacked us first!"

"These criminals for hire broke the law about drawing blood below ground. Please take them off our hands for the Prince's judgement!"

Mookie says, "Yeah! Take 'em away! Lock 'em up!"

"We'll have more info and a solution to this case tomorrow!"

Mookie says, "Yeah, Tomorrow!"

[OOC: Mookie's bluff check to aid another -- 5 is a failure. Vauhwyt's Bluff check to distract attention away from Kernorn -- 19. Vauhwyt's Bluff check to convey a secret message to her friends -- fails. Contents of secret message -- a mystery!]

Dietrich  d20+2=21
Tuesday March 30th, 2004 10:40:03 AM

Dietrich listens to Theodore´s explanation about Mattison and gets even more concerned about the extension of the whole affair.

He also listens to Zaynes suggestion and thinks it is worth some reflection. The party has already some conections with the prince and perhaps it would be surer than to talk with the Knives.

When the group arrives at the Knives, Dietrich stays behind, trying not to call attention on himself, watching over Kernon and covering him from other eyes with his massive body.

He lets VAuhwyt handle the talkings and doesn´t interfere, though he woudn´t have been so hard with the mercenaries. He silently thinks: 'They were just doing their job, and taking their stuff would be punishment enough.'

Dietrich observes Vauhwyt (sense motivation 21) and feels that she´s behaving strange, trying to say something, though he can´t understand what it is.

Tuesday March 30th, 2004 12:42:32 PM

Theodore doesn't say anything when the party reaches the tower. His mind is wandering through political intrigues and hazy schemes.
He doesn't notice when Macaw begins to pluck hairs from his head.

Vorelle
Tuesday March 30th, 2004 9:02:44 PM

Vorelle listens to the goings-on with a slight frown. Nobody seems to be touching on what she thinks is the salient point. When it seems that nobody else is going to mention it, she takes a deep breath and makes the attempt.

"I-it's l-l-l-l-loose," she sputters. "Th-th-the b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b---" With a little sigh of frustration, she steps up to Kernorn and points to the wasp cage.

DM Jan
Wednesday March 31st, 2004 12:16:54 AM

There is more than one raised eyebrow as Vauhwyt tells the tale, however - although none of the Knives present know what the Dickens High Woldian is about, the sign of Marteaus is common enough.

"Holy Wardd, the Dark Lord rises again!" utters one of them, backing away from Mattison's corpse.
"Don't be stupid," says another. "All thats over with. Just a bunch of silly stories to frighten the children."
One of the dwarves gathers his wits and decrees -
"These alive will be kept until this whole mystery is solved! For right now all we have is your word against theirs, and the murderer still walks, IF I've heard it told right.
"It would be a sorry state of affairs indeed if another death was laid at the killer's feet."

The group would probably benefit from a good dinner and some rest. Little Rose is still feeling the effects of the poison and would need a trip to the Temple to fix it.
However - Vorelle has a good point - the bug.... is still loose, and perhaps waiting out there, for the early morn, when someone invariably dies.
There is a window of opportunity, but its getting shorter by the hour.

Kernorn whispers to his wasp, grins at Vorelle, then is content to hide behind Dietrich, like he's playing some kind of hide and seek game.

Vauhwyt (HP 14 of 19, Dex 12 of 15) and Mookie (HP 9 of 9)
Wednesday March 31st, 2004 5:54:45 AM

After leaving the knives, Vauhwyt says to the group, "Vorelle, are you saying we should not wait for morning? I would feel horrible if someone died overnight because we did not act."

Mookie protests, "Now Boss, don't be a golly martyr! You're out of spells, wounded, and still full of wasp poison from earlier today!"

"Eh," Vauhwyt responds, "one good cure spell will set me right as rain. Besides, my feathered friend, you are uninjured, so you can protect me."

"Um, errr, uh, sure, Boss."

To the entire group, Vauhwyt suggests, "Why don't we rest for an hour, wash the blood off, have a meal and a little curing, and then go looking for Edgar again. With Kernorn's help, we'll find him right away." Se smiles at the bug specialist.

"Maybe someone could use Detect Magic on the loot in case there is anything we could use right away. Bring those nets for sure -- we don't want to hurt Edgar. Oh, and I do have a couple shield spells to use. I could give one to Theo or Rose and use the other myself when we get close."

"Thoughts?"

Dietrich
Wednesday March 31st, 2004 8:35:38 AM

Dietrich is relieved that they are not the centre of attention anymore and could leave the Knives without further problems.
He just want some hot meal and cold drink and rest for a while.

The soldier understands Vorelle´s concern about letting the monster around, but he is definitely against going after it now.

"In my assessment of the situation, a seek and aprehend or destroy task tonight brings on a very serious risk of death for party members. Don´t forget that the beast is magical and our whole plan of catching it was based on Theodore´s spell. Also, the beewax didn´t work to protect us against the 'singing'."

Than he asks Kernon if Edgar fears something in special, like fire for example. He also asks KErnon if Edgar uses specif passages to enter the city after his pray.

If it does, Dietrich suggests that the non-magic members of the group could keep guarding these ways and, if Edgar appears, only scare him away tonight. Tomorrow the whole, strenghtened party would go to hunt it, possibly with new magical items.

Theodore and Macaw
Wednesday March 31st, 2004 9:32:50 AM

"I have no more magic," Theodore explains to the party. He brushes a lock of hair from his eyes. "I would be useless to you against Edgar now. Until I can rest, I fear that I would only be in the way. But I don't want anyone else to die, either. Perhaps there is another way that we can contain him?"

The young man looks to Kernorn. "How much time do we have before Edgar feeds again? And remember that we are trying to take him alive, so please help us to help you."

Vorelle
Wednesday March 31st, 2004 9:28:51 PM

"M-m-m-m-monster," Vorelle manages to gasp to the Knives, then gives up.

Since when is the well-being of everyone in Dirt City the responsibility of a group of unpaid adventurers? she thinks crossly. Can they not keep an eye on things for six measly hours while we get some rest? especially since we now know what's doing it?

She shakes her head as she walks, discouraged. Somebody will die tonight, but there's nothing they can do about it if the Knives refuse to act.

Theodore's question to Kernorn turns out to be an important one.

"He'll be asleep now," croons the mad entomologist. "Just before dawn, the hunger will awaken him."
Then -
"I must pack! Then we can fly off and never be seen again. Yes, I'll need -"
His speech returns to near jibberish as he goes through endless lists.

One of the problems with spending a lot of time underground, its easy to lose track of time. It is however, early evening as it turns out.

There are a few options it seems - providing Kernorn could be trusted. The group know more or less where the creature might have been last. Perhaps the biggest obstacle to decision making, was determining just how dangerous Edgar actually was.

But time was marching on, and a decision, however difficult, however much of a gamble, had to be made.

Theodore and Macaw
Thursday April 1st, 2004 1:16:27 PM

Theodore is finally brought back to the present and swats at Macaw to keep the raven from plucking him bald. "Silly bird."

"Well," begins Theodore with a heart heavy sigh. "If we go by what Kernorn says, then we have time to rest and regain our strength before going after Edgar. I think that's where I stand, though I will go with the group." He casually rubs his left eye and picks off an eye booger which he regards for a moment before flicking it away.

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Thursday April 1st, 2004 1:19:40 PM

Vauhwyt is quiet and thinks for a while. Then she is suddenly pleased with herself.

"Hey!" she exclaims, "It's only early evening! We could crash right this second, go home, wash, eat a quick bite, and hit the hay. eight hours of sleep later, we could be up before dawn, and catch Edgar at his hungriest!"

"How's that sound?"

If enough people agree, Vauhwyt heads for home, hopefully with the group in tow, and with Kernorn coming along as well.

As they walk, the liontaur asks Kernorn if Edgar is poisonous. If so, some Antivenom might be a good thing to buy in a shop along the way.

[OOC: Oops! Theo and Vauhwyt had the same idea at the same time, it seems.]

Dietrich
Thursday April 1st, 2004 1:21:34 PM

As it appears that the group can rest tonight without risking the live of anybody, Dietrich agrees with Theodore.
If the group decides diferentely however, he will keep with the group.

Vauhwyt and Theo's idea of getting somehting to eat sounds great to him,"I think something to eat sounds perfect, and I think I may have an idea to keep someone alive tonight. We can talk about it over dinner."

"So what does everyone feel like eating?" Walking over to Kernorn,"I'll take care of him." Looking at the mad-man with pity, and listening to his ramblings.

DM Jan
Friday April 2nd, 2004 2:26:20 AM

The decision is made to get some desperately needed R&R before tackling Edgar.

There are plenty of places to go for dinner, or to get food from passing carts.
If the Temple is visited to regain that dex - a donation will be expected.

Over in Keys territory, everything seems normal, and Kernorn strides along with Zayne and Vorelle, boring them to death with the mating habits of the lesser spotted ladybug. He cradles his wasp box as though it were a child.
His answer to Vauhwyt's question about poison -
"Well sort off, but not really... where do I sleep? I don't want to put this box in a draft. I don't want her to get cold."

The group gets some rest, and presumably goes over tactics.

((OOC - folks let me know, when you intend to go after Edgar, where you intend to resume the search, and any special preparations))

Vauhwyt (HP 14 of 19, Dex 12 of 15) and Mookie (HP 9 of 9)
Friday April 2nd, 2004 7:29:24 AM

Vauhwyt looks curiously at Rose and asks, "Dearr, why are you pulling my tail?" She gently extracts it from the halfling's grasp.

At home, the group discusses options over dinner. Vauhwyt sees no need to visit the Temple. Mookie says, "Donation, schmonation!" And Vauhwyt adds, "This wasp poison isn't worth the trouble or money. A few nights sleep will work wonders." [OOC: a night's sleep heals a point of ability score damage; a full day's rest, 2 points; a full day's rest under a healer's care, 4 points.]

Just in case of trouble from the Darts, two people should be awake at all times. Since they want a very early start, Vauhwyt suggests two four-hour watches, with spell casters taking no watch in order to sleep right through. "We'll be tired when this is all overr, but we'll have the chance to rest laterr."

In the morning, the liontaur suggests, they should get up well before dawn. She asks if Kernorn can lead them to likely places to find Edgar. If and when they do, Vauhwyt is counting on Theo's spell, the nets taken from the mercs, and whatever subdual attacks are needed to put Edgar under.

"Has anyone cast Detect Magic on this pile of stuff?" she asks. "And if our good cleric has any curative spells left today, I could use even a minor healing."

Later, Vauhwyt moves her bedding in front of the main door to the apartment, to block the door (if it swings in) or at least prove an obstacle if anyone wants in or out.

The next day she watches Rose and Theo and Olyn prepare spells. "I'm glad I don't have to do that," she thinks smugly to herself.

Satisfied with their plan, Dietrich accompanies the group home. He unstrains his bow and puts his gear aside for dinner and is glad to have some rest.

After dinner, Dietrich want´s to see what exactly is their booty. It was a tough day and the reward is more than justified.

He thinks the party should proceed like today, with Kernon leading the way and Theodore´s spell and the nets.

The soldier will keep one of the 4 hours watches. While at watch, he stays in the dark, broadswird ready.

On the way home, Macaw finds a dead rat which provides a delectable meal for the carrion eater. On the other hand, Theodore prefers his dead animals cooked, and stops at a vendor on the way to purchase a turkey leg.

Back at the apartment, Theodore does a few light stretches before curling up under his covers. A couple of hours before dawn, he wakes to eat the rest of his turkey leg and study from his spellbook. He places the items he took from Mattison in the common room for everyone to peruse.

Tuning Kernorn out on the walk home trying to work out his plan, but really having trouble concentrating, with his gnawing stomach.

As the group sits down to eat he begins to eat ravenously. After wolfing down his first serving,he decides now is the time to talk about his idea,"Here's what I got so far. Kernorn seems to be able to communicate with Edgar at a distance or at the very least feel his presence. Now if we can trust him,Edgar is asleep or will be soon. I think our best bet at taking him alive would be to do it while he is asleep. I managed to get out of that scrap unharmed. If Vorelle and Dietrich are up to it I think the three of us could take Kernorn and capture Edgar tonight while he is asleep and we don't have to worry about someone else dying tonight. I don't know about you but I'm not sure I could sleep tonight anyway." All this is said around mouthfulls of food, his nose twitching excitedly.

Sitting back to pick at his plate and listen to the rest of the group's ideas.

Vorelle
Sunday April 4th, 2004 8:10:04 PM

If such a thing is available, Vorelle will stop on the way home and procure a vial of antitoxin.

In the apartment, she stammers her thanks to Rose for the food, then listens to Zayne's plan. "I-it's r-r-risky," she says uncertainly. "D-do you think w-we c-c-can d-do it?"

Spread out on the table -

Mage's spellbook and componants.
Mattison's spellbook and componants.
(Both will need study by a spellcaster to determine contents)
60 GP in a pouch
5 Pearls
2 Daggers
Club
Broadsword
Longbow
Quiver of arrows
Leather armour
Large cloth bag, containing:
3 torches
2 large, superior heavy duty nets
Nothing lights up as being particularly magical.

Bellies are filled, healing is done, rest is taken, loot lies on the table.
Does the group leave immediately and forgo their spells?
Or do they leave as dawn is about to break, when spells have had a chance to be replenished?
((Give me a vote, folks - I'll do with the general consensus))

When the group does decide to leave, Kernorn tells them he is convinced they were very close, down by the Sewerfall. His babble suggests that he think you are going to let him escape with his charge...
He's ready to go, wasp an' all.

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Monday April 5th, 2004 11:41:18 AM

The liontaur thinks the entire group should rest and go out in the predawn hours.

"It can't be later than seven hours of the clock after midday now -- we can be out hunting by the fourth hour of the morning after resting. That should be early enough, I think."

She scowls a little at Zayne, however. "But don't you even think about going out alone, Zayne Farshaw! Nor with just Vorelle and Dietrich, eitherr! That's a good way to end up as bug food!"

"If you have to go now, we'll all go! Or if you can't sleep, then spend the night eating Rose's roast and standing watch!"

Her glare says she means business, as does her twitching tail, but her smile softens her words a little.

Mookie chimes in, "Please don't get the boss angry!"

Theodore and Macaw
Monday April 5th, 2004 11:50:16 AM

Theodore is oblivious to the goings-ons as his nose is stuck in a book, preparing his spells for the day.

Dietrich
Monday April 5th, 2004 12:09:48 PM

After eating Rose´s delicious dinner and having some rest, Dietrich votes for replenishing magic and going to hunt the monster with full power. Dietrich doesn´t trust Kernon completely and he has a strong feeling that the monster is dangerous, so he´d really like to avoid brave but unnecessary and dangerous acts.

He doesn´t like Vauhwyt´s temper, but the warrior doesn´t say anything about it, just looks surprised.

If the party decides to go after the bug at dawn, the knight will sleep a little and than take the second 4h watch.

Concerning the loot, he takes a closer look at the weapons, to see if any of it is of better quality, and if not, he suggests to sell all the loot after the spell casters have learned what they can from the books.

Zayne
Monday April 5th, 2004 12:29:43 PM

Obviously, surprised at Vauhwyt's answer, the youth responds probably a little more harshly than the situation calls for, looking at Vauhwyt, and speaking in a quiet and cold voice,"No you listen, you may not have very many friends or family here but I do. I refuse to sit back and sleep while that thing is still out there killing. If I end up as bug food then at least I did everything I could."

Looking over at Kernorn I know this sounds crazy but I don't think Edgar will attack him,I just have this strange feeling that he is the key. I know that he hasn't been the most trustworthy fellow, but I have this feeling that is telling me he is the key."

Zayne is clearly having a tantrum,"Speaking of him what do you want to do with him,I'm betting you want to kill him or turn him in. He is obviously insane and even though he is partially responsible for the deaths,he was being manipulated by Mattison and who knows who else."

Grabbing one last piece of roast and then standing up, and heading for the door."I'm going outside for a little while,I'll be back to get ready to catch Edgar within the hour."

Vorelle
Monday April 5th, 2004 7:29:04 PM

It's still dark up on the surface level, and the lamps are still dimmed below, as the group finally sets off back toward the sewerfall near the Halfling Quarter, but it's that time of change, when dawn is about to break. The City is on the edge of awakening, and out in the wilds, the nocturnes are getting ready to sneak back into their lairs for a good day's sleep.

Spells are replenished, prayers have been uttered. Dietrich doesn't find anything really special amongst the loot.

There's no one on the sewer corridors save a few night watchmen and the occasional lamplighter coming on shift. From this level - the Sewerfall looks like a big dark hole filled with the sound of running water.
Four ladders descend into the gloom - one on each wall of the shaft.

Dietrich
Tuesday April 6th, 2004 1:41:01 PM

Dietrich is sorry with the discussion that has started between his friends and trys to calm them down. He takes three beers, serves one to Zayne, one to VAuhwyt and one to himself and says:
"Here friends, let´s not fight with each other and concentrate on the monster. Drink this refreshing malt beer with me and toast to Wardd and Domi for our luck in the sewers!"

When the party gets ready, Dietrich suggest to do the same as the day before; no lights, scouts ahead and behind, KErnon describing the way, Theo ready for the spell and the others with the nets.
Dietrich is exited and feels the same old battle lust that gives him courage but also scares him.

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Tuesday April 6th, 2004 4:15:10 PM

When Zayne Dietrich offers herself and Zayne a drink, Vauhwyt accepts happily. Any anger she had has evaporated, and now she is just worried.

"Look, Zayne," she says as she drinks, "I'm sorry I made you mad. I just don't want you to get hurt. "

She adds, "I really do intend to let Kernorn free. He said he would promise to leave Dirt City and to never let his creatures hurt innocent people again. If he makes this oath, he is free to go, and Edgar with him. If he gives us the money he promised, I want to use some or all of it to pay back the families of the dead victims, too."

Since Dietrich is taking the second watch, Vauhwyt tells Mookie to take the first watch. She wants to make sure that Kernorn does not run away.

If she is woken in the night, her chance to regain spells will be ruined. So the group might as well go bug hunting then.

If she sleeps the night through, then she is ready to adventure in the dark before dawn.

Vauhwyt urges the group to stick together, since it is too dangerous that a solo scout might fall under Edgar's spell and be killed. She keeps a close watch on Kernorn, too.

"Which way should we go, friend Kernorn?" she asks him. "And warn us when we are nearr, please."
