DM Bob & Carla Monday March 29th, 2004 10:47:00 PM
Lost in his own thoughts, Lorth doesn't answer Bralin, and the dwarf trudges along, left to wonder what he's got himself into. Kedarn notices an aura of magic about the studded armour, the rapier, and the wand.
A little past the middle of the night the party pulls up in front of a building. The front of the structure appears to be nothing more than a one story stone cottage, whereas the back part is a compact two stories and made of wood. A sign above the door identifies the place as Pullman's Crossing and Roadhouse. Alkali's hawk flys down from it's perch on the roof, and alights on his companions shoulder.
Once again, a slice of light spills across the snow, and in the doorway stands a dishevelled Samuel, his nightshirt hanging over hastily donned breaches. "I thought I heard my wagon!" he calls out, relief evident in his voice, "an' how are my beasts?" After a quick scan over the contents of the wagon, he moves over to examine the oxen.
Another splash of light, and a tall, lean man exits, rolling up his sleeves to expose sinewy forearms.
Andrath Tuesday March 30th, 2004 8:12:47 AM
Andrath joins up with the party at the crossing. He asks Lorth, "So, did any of the items turn out to be magical?"
Cadmar Tuesday March 30th, 2004 8:22:36 AM
Cadmar jumps off the wagon and, not really paying much attention to the men coming to inspect the wagon, half-walks, half-runs towards the house.
"Where's Cassandra?"
Lorth Tuesday March 30th, 2004 9:54:01 AM
"Sorry friend Bralin. I didn't mean to ignore you. If you mean our current quest, we are trying to free a young lady named Cassandra from a curse. If you wish to offer your services to help in any way, I'm sure we would all accept. We could use a stout axe. If you mean my personal goals, they are to find my father's remains and put his soul to rest, not a world shattering goal per say, but something I feel I must do for my mother's sake." Lorth then falls into silence.
(OOC: I didn't cast detect magic, that would be Kedarn)
Elerinn Tuesday March 30th, 2004 1:22:41 PM
Elerinn greets Samuel and is glad the man is relieved to regain his wagon without much trouble. He points at the bound bandits on the wagon and says, carefull not to say anything that might offend the merchant: "These are, as you see, the half-elves who stole your wagon. But please, forget any vengefull thoughts and bring these criminals back to Jarlswolf. Pantheon's laws will take care of them."
Elerinn is, like Cadmar, curious about Cassandra's whereabouts, so he awaits Samuel's answer.
Bralin Tuesday March 30th, 2004 1:37:49 PM
The dwarf nods at Lorth's answer.
"Both be worthy," he replies. "I offer my axe to your cause. Yet must I to Magpie Crossing 'ere long, and seek out those I'm pledged to find. Do ye travel thence after this quest?"
At the tavern, Bralin stands with the prisoners, watching them while everyone else babbles on mundane matters.
Kedarn Tuesday March 30th, 2004 6:21:09 PM
"Greetings again Samuel, is there someplace these bandits can be secured so that we can all go in and get out this cold?" Kedarn says to Samuel.
Kedarn walks over to Andrath and tells him quietly "the studded leather, rapier and wand all have trace of magic on them."
Kedarn will help secure the bandits then join everyone inside and warm up.
ADM Bob and Carla Tuesday March 30th, 2004 8:59:49 PM
Kedarn greets Samuel, and Elerinn intercedes with the wagon-master on the bandit's behalf, but Samuel is too concerned with his animals and the wagon to pay much attention to the adventurers, other than to thank them for the return of his goods. When Kedarn asks about shelter, Samuel motions distractedly in the direction of the bony individual, whose wispy hair is a thin disguise for the slightly pointed ears. "Ask Luther," is Samuel's only response.
As if on cue, the man lowers his green eyes, and opens an arm towards the door announcing, "Luther Armson, ferryman and proprietor of this 'ere fine roadhouse, at yer service!"
As Cadmar, anxious to determine the whereabouts of Cassandra brushes past him, the half-elf adds, "now fine gentleman, be quiet-like lest you wake the lady sleeping 'bove. She's a little queer. Did'na say a word, and kept her hood up, secret-like, but ate a fine meal, and paid in gold she did."
Luther scowls when he sees the three bandits. "Don't want the likes of them in my fine establishment. You can chain 'em to the posts in the barn. The beasts'll keep 'em warm, an' Lucy can bring 'em some crusts."
Kedarn and Bralin secure the bandits as Samuel looks after his oxen. The wagon master calls to Bralin over the backs of the animals, "I'll be stopping at Magpie Crossing after I've made my deliveries to Jarlswolf." The man casts a scathing eye at the bandits, slumped in fatigue and manacled to the posts that support the barn, before continuing, "I can deliver a letter for you, or at least bear word that you are on your way."
Those who enter the roadhouse are greeted by a young woman who is attractive despite her wispy brown hair. She is tall, and lean, with her father's green eyes, pale skin, and slightly pointed ears. A brief curtsy is accompanied by, "Lucy Armson at 'yer service!"
Andrath Wednesday March 31st, 2004 12:42:17 AM
Andrath smiles at the young woman at the roadhouse, and says, "Well met, Lucy; I am Andrath, and my friends and I are looking for accomodation for the night. Then we are heading into the Wyrmsfut. Can you give us any advice before we head into the swamp? Also, we need some warmer clothing, I am thinking. Would you have anything like that for sale here?"
Sometime during the evening, Andrath will ask Kedarn (and only Kedarn), "What do you think of our friends' idea that all the items from the theives should be turned into the authorities? I consider them the spoils of 'war', and I think that we are entitled to them. Will you back me if I make a demand that the items are ours by right of 'salvage'? Right now, I am in possession of all their weapons, as well as the wand, and I once heard that possession is nine-tenths of the law!"
Cadmar Wednesday March 31st, 2004 3:50:00 AM
After hearing that Cassandra had a full meal and went to sleep Cadmar calms down. "Where are my manners? I'm Cadmar Gondaval. It would be great to be able to sleep under a roof for a change."
The tension leaves him and he sags down, weary from the road. The ranger crouches by the wall of the house, and, with his eyes closed and his arms folded on his chest, sighs: "I'm looking forward to a nice, hot meal. And a bath."
Lorth Wednesday March 31st, 2004 9:34:35 AM
Lorth helps Bralin secure the bandits. "I'm sure, that we could accompany you to Magpie crossing after will deal with our other task. I will certainly come even if the others don't, if you help us with Cassandra."
After securing the bandits Lorth retires to the inn, to get some dinner.
Bralin Wednesday March 31st, 2004 10:41:55 AM
Bralin secures the bandits with Lorth, but doesn't go inside.
"They must be guarded," he tells the paladin. "I will begin".
The dwarf finds a convenient bucket or chair, procures a blanket to fight off the chill, sets his large axe in plain sight (but not reach) of the prisoners, and proceeds to silently stare the three down.
Kedarn Wednesday March 31st, 2004 10:54:49 AM
Kedarn thanks Samuel for the information then heads in after helping secure the bandits. As Kedarn goes in he tells Bralin "I will be out to releive you in abit so that you can get some food and sleep."
"I will support your idea Andrath as I feel we should get some form of payment for capturing them." Kedarn quietly tells Andrath.
"Greetings Lucy, could you show me where I can get a good hot bath before I eat?" Kedarn says.
Elerinn Wednesday March 31st, 2004 3:48:36 PM
Elerinn observes the dutyfull dwarf and feels sorry he cannot help, for he needs continues sleep to regain his lost spells. He follows Lorth into the inn, for he is quite hungry, and weary as well, from today's travels.
Jasper (Elerinn) OOC Wednesday March 31st, 2004 3:58:16 PM
I won't be able to post tommorow, for I was stupid enough to sign in for a 100 km walk tommorow (About 62.5 miles...Can anybody tell me why exactly I am going to do this?).
Elerinn will rest this night and will follow along with he others tommorow.
Alkali Wednesday March 31st, 2004 9:21:49 PM
Alkali sets a chair and sits right next to the dwarf. "No sense in watching them all by yourself." Alkali watches their hands in particular detail as he is on guard.
DM Bob & Carla Wednesday March 31st, 2004 10:47:29 PM
Kept company by the tiny Alkali, Bralin has first watch over the manacled bandits. The three half elves slump wearily on the ground, and soon snores are heard all around.
Everyone is interested in a hot meal and several enquire after the availability of baths.
Samual tramps in after stabling his animals, and covering his wagon with a tarp. He thanks the adventurers profusely, and indicates he wants to talk to them in the morning before they part company.
Lucy's pretty green eyes go round when the party scout mentions Wyrmsfut. "Ye won't be needin' warm clothes in that place" she says. A sharp look from her father and the half-elf maid is off to the kitchen, from which she quickly returns.
Stifling a yawn, Lucy gets to work slicing up previously boiled potatoes and onion, frying the lot up in melted bacon grease in a large frying pan on the fire. A large pork loin, cold, and sliced thinly sits on a wooden cutting board, beside a wooden bowl full of apples. Luther sets out two crockery jugs filled with ale, a little watered down, but ale none the less. "Yer can wash up in the lean-to behind the kitchen," he volunteers, "There's some soap an' a pitcher of water, an' some towels, but baths will have to wait 'til tomorrow. It takes a long time to heat the water, an' its jus' me an' Lucy to run this 'ere place." He looks around the room, and adds, "there's 5 rooms an' 2 are already let. That leaves 3 for the lot of you, but the beds are for 2, 'an one room gots a trundle for a young 'un." Luther scratches his head, and his wispy hair gets even more disheveled, "figure it'll be okay for a little feller."
Lucy sets the hot pan on the table next to the other food, while Luther adds earthenware plates and mugs. The young woman than excuses herself, and makes up a tray of cold meat, bread, a small bit of cheese, and water, which she brings to the small barn, and leaves for those on guard and their sleeping prisoners. After washing up a bit, and eating their fill under the watchful eye of Luther, folks head off to sleep for what remains of the night. Kedarn relieves Bralin and Alkali of their watch.
(OOC: Please post sleeping assignments for the bedrooms. The Hare, The Fox, The Squirrel(bed with trundle). Samuel and Marcus are in The Otter and Cassandra is in The Shrew)
Andrath Thursday April 1st, 2004 12:01:05 AM
Andrath returns from his turn at washing up, and sits down for supper. He says, "I might as well take the first sleeping shift in the Fox; it seems appropriate somehow. I will take the last watch over the prisoners, before the sun rises. All right?"
Elerinn Thursday April 1st, 2004 3:20:51 AM
Elerinn goes to the lean-to as soon as Andrath returns and washes his dirty clothes somewhat. Feeling refreshed but hungry, he returns to join Andrath for supper. When he is finished, he quietly retreats to the room called The Hare and falls asleep almost as soon as he lies down on his bed.
OOC: Just enough time to post before I leave...
Kedarn Thursday April 1st, 2004 4:43:49 AM
Kedarn will quickly wash up then grab some food and drink. Kedarn will go up and sleep while he can after Andrath relieves him from watch in the room called The Fox.
Cadmar Thursday April 1st, 2004 5:26:38 AM
Cadmar, having eaten his fill, stretches and yawns. "Good night everyone!" As he is about to retire he stops by The Shrew and listens by the door, hoping to hear Cassandra's breathing.
Poor girl. It must have been awful when they were mentioning the names of the rooms in front of her.
Cadmar goes into The Hare and is asleep almost as soon as he takes off his boots and throws himself on the bed.
Lorth Thursday April 1st, 2004 8:49:59 AM
Lorth stays up a bit and polishes his armor. Then he heads to "The Squirrel" lays out his equipment for the next day and gets some sleep.
Bralin Thursday April 1st, 2004 10:26:02 AM
The dwarf nods in acknowledgement as Alkali enters, but says nothing.
[ooc - what race/class is Alkali?]
Once the prisoners have been asleep for awhile, and Bralin is comfortable they're not faking it, he meanders outside the barn for a few minutes.
The dwarf is looking for any kind of fist sized stone in the area. Finding one, he returns to his post, removes a set of tools from his pack, and begins etching the rock's surface.
Bralin spends the rest of the shift idly working the stone, with an occasional glance at the bandits.
When relieved, he packs up his gear, and the stone. Entering the tavern, he opens doors till he finds an empty bed. Soon, he is sleeping contendedly in The Squirrel.
Alkali Thursday April 1st, 2004 9:02:33 PM
The young witch watches as the dwarf starts carving away at a rock. Alkali glances up and wonders someone of his height could get so broad shouldered. After a while sleep takes over Alkali and after double checking the theives' ropes and what belongings they might have, he goes to bed.

After a bit of a wash up, and some food to fill an empty belly, folks settle in for the night. Being the smallest, Elerinn pulls the trundle bed out from under the bigger bed, and exhausted by the day's endeavors, quickly falls asleep. The gnome doesn't even hear Cadmar when the paladin makes his way to The Hare after a pause at the witch Cassandra's door. Lorth settles into the large bed in The Squirrel, and is fast asleep when a weary Bralin dumps his gear in a corner, strips down, and crawls in. In The Fox Andrath enters the trance-like state of meditation that passes for sleep for his kind. After four hours he is restored, and takes his turn at watch relieving his brethren. Kedarn then retires to the room previously occupied by the ranger.
In the morning, a tired, but smiling Lucy greets the guests. Two tables are pushed together, with long benches and stools placed about it. Baskets lined with plaid cloth are heaped with scones, muffins, and oatcakes. There is a little pot of berry jam, but no butter. A large crockery pot containing baked beans is wrapped in a towel to keep it warm, and a platter contains some whole, cooked, fishes. Two jugs of the same weak ale, and a pot of tea round out the setting.
"Help yerselves," calls the half-elf maid, as she struggles to carry two large iron pots through the door to the kitchen. "Mind the water on the floor," she calls as the door swings shut behind her. Both the main room fire, and the hearth in the kitchen have pots of water set to boil for the baths. Returning to the room, wiping her hands on her apron, Lucy says, "any one wishin' a bath, will find a tub in the lean-to off the kitchen. There's two of 'em and lots of hot water. The lady's already had her turn."
The outside door bangs open, and a smiling Samuel stomps into the room, knocking snow off his boots. He is followed by his son, Marcus. Luther slips into the room behind them, and makes for the kitchen, jingling some coins in his pocket.
"Ah! Good morning friends!" calls Samuel before shouting, "Marcus! Paper and an inkpen! If yer' ever to take my place, you've got to learn to scribe. There be lading forms, and other documents. Now get the names of these fellows, to whom we owe our livelihood if not our very lives!"
As Marcus looks at each of the adventurers in turn, and scribes their names, Samual grabs a scone, and pours some tea.
Andrath Friday April 2nd, 2004 12:02:33 AM
Andrath is glad that the night goes by uneventfully. In the morning, he carefully repacks his gear, getting ready for the road into the swamp. He goes downstairs and takes his turn in the bath, managing to still get some of the lukewarm water.
In the common room, the elf introduces himself to the two wagoneers. "I am Andrath Silverhand, and I am just glad that we were able to set things right for you. I hope that those three won't be any trouble for you. If you can get the authorities to keep them under watch in Jarlswolf, we can come and testify in a few days, if needed."
After breakfast, he asks Samuel, "What can you tell us about where we are heading?"
Cadmar Friday April 2nd, 2004 4:36:48 AM
Cadmar, having eaten his breakfast and taken bath, remembers that the expedition set off with the intention of reaching Wyrmsfut as soon as possible, and is suddenly almost feeling guilty for spending so much time on grooming and eating.
"Don't make yourself too comfortable around the tables, friends. We should cover as much ground as we can today."
After paying his bill Cadmar goes in search of Cassandra.
Kedarn Friday April 2nd, 2004 5:44:40 AM
After waking up Kedarn heads down and takes a bath cleaning up as best he can. Afterwards Kedarn will go in and eat some scones and drink tea.
"I am Kedarn Shadowglade. Glad we could be of help." Kedarn tells Marcus.
"I agree Cadmar, we need to travel as much as possible today. After everyone has eaten and washed up I think we should head out." Kedarn comments.
"Lucy, how much do we owe for the rooms, bath and food?" asks Kedarn.
Elerinn Friday April 2nd, 2004 7:44:17 AM
After a restfull night, Elerinn heads down and greets everyone. When Samuel asks everyone to tell his name, Elerinn states: "My name is Elerinn, good sir. Glad to be of service to you. Once again I want to ask you to treat the prisoners well, and let Pantheon be their judge."
When Elerinn is about to take a bath, Cadmar states his intention to continue to Wyrmsfut as soon as possible and the gnome decides the bath can wait. He follows Cadmar in search for Cassandra, really anxious to know how she is doing.
Lorth Friday April 2nd, 2004 8:09:15 AM
Lorth eats as quickly as possible so that he has time for a bath. After bathing he returns to the inn and gives the wagonmaster his name. He then gets his equipment in order for the day.
Bralin Friday April 2nd, 2004 8:29:06 AM
Bralin rises a bit before the others, quickly and efficiently repacks his gear, and strides to an empty corner of the common room.
As the rest of the party enters, the dwarf can be found starely intently into a fist sized obsidian sphere. After an hour of this (in)activity, Bralin puts away the stone, and joins everyone at the table. [Prepared standard spells]
Bralin likes to eat, and is indifferent about bathing. So, while the rest deal with cleaning themselves, he gets to work. Nodding at Cadmar's admonition, he starts shoveling in the food. Somehow, he manages to get out "Bralin Stoneminder" in reply to Samuel's request.
Fifteen minutes, a couple fish, a plate of beans, a half dozen muffins (liberally covered with jam), and two mugs of ale later, Bralin lets out a huge belch, and nods solemnly at Lucy.
"Quite good," he compliments her.
The dwarf is ready to go.
Alkali Friday April 2nd, 2004 10:20:16 PM
Alkali comes down the stairs extremely groggy after his sleep. He packs quickly and eats little. He agrees with Bralin about the food, but soon after starts to zone out a little tired.
DM Bob & Carla Saturday April 3rd, 2004 2:24:08 PM
Tongue sticking out to one side, young Marcus concentrates on printing each of the adventurer's names as best he can. With a happy grin, he hands the list to his father:
Folding the list carefully and pocketing it inside his greatcoat, the wagonmaster answers Andrath and Elerinn. "I'll not mistreat the brigands, but I can'na speak for the authorities. I know not what punishment awaits those three." Samuel steps through the door, inviting the rogue to follow. "The leader looks familiar. I believe there may be a bounty for his capture. If there is a reward, I shall leave a note on the "Adventurer's Board" at Jarlswolf. Does your party have a name?" Samuel starts to dig around in the back of his wagon, "I wish to thank'ee for saving me and my boy, and returning my wagon." As he moves some boxes aside he adds, "I can'na help you with the swamp, but our host might know something about it."
At the mention of Cassandra, Marcus moves over to Cadmar, and tries to catch Elerinn's eye. "I know where the lady is. Come with me!" Marcus dashes outside and heads up the trail the party had descended the previous night. After about 15 minutes of uphill walking, Marcus and those who followed him reach a small lookout. Cassandra is sitting on a bench made from a half-log resting on two large rocks. She stands when the party approaches, and points to the east.
The route carved by the Peaseblossom River through the Culverwood Forest is barely discernable, until it opens up just below the trail the party has been following. Ice clings to the shore about 10 ft. on either side, but otherwise the river is deep, dark, and swift. Samuel's wagon can be seen in front of the roadhouse. Pullman's Crossing is located on the west bank of the river at one of the few spots where there is a reasonably wide, firm landing in the otherwise steep-sided valley. There is a small landing, a beach with a wide dock, on the east side. A cable runs across the river, linked to a ferry that appears nothing more than a wide raft, tied where the trail meets the water's edge. In the distance, fog hovers over a large area of the forest. "Look!" cries Marcus, "it's shaped like a dragon's claw." Sure enough, the fog is the shape of a dragon's footprint with 3 large toes pointing east, and a single toe pointing west.
Inside the roadhouse, Kedarn attempts to settle the party's bill. Lucy blushes, and defers to her father, who returns from the kitchen in time to hear the cleric's enquiry. "That'll be 60 gold pieces, fine sir," he says holding out his hand, and staring at the ceiling as if examining the status of the timbers above his head, "8 gold for each of your party and 4 gold for feeding the sheltering the ne'er-do-wells."
Lorth, Bralin, and Alkali watch the proceedings and prepare to depart.
Cadmar Sunday April 4th, 2004 3:39:19 AM
"You are welcome, Samuel! Good luck on the last leg of your journey! Jarlswolf is not far away; I hope you won't have problems reaching it."
When the wagon driver asks about the party's name, Cadmar replies without missing a beat: "Calmacili. Swords of Light!" Then he turns to the rest of the group with a mischevious smile on his face that soon widens into a grin.
"Do you think you can ask our good landlord if he knows anything about the area we are about to enter? I'm off to look for Cassandra. Coming, Elerinn?"
Cadmar approaches the witch and, trying to muster as much confidence and cheerfulness in his voice as he can, says: "Good morning! I've never been in that part of the forest before. I wish I could see it in the spring. Others are already packing up. We will be ready to continue our trip in a moment."
Elerinn Monday April 5th, 2004 6:26:17 AM
Elerinn nods in agreement when Cadmar gives Samuel the party's name and asks: "How did you come up with that name? I think it's great!"
When Cadmar goes out, looking for Cassandra, he follows and greets the witch with almost as much cheerfulness as his friend. Elerinn is quite worried, though, but tries to hide his anxiety. The claw-shaped fog gives the gnome the feeling that this day is going to be a dangerous one.
Andrath Monday April 5th, 2004 8:09:13 AM
Andrath looks shocked at the total for the bill. "8 gp each for a night and some simple meals? And 4 gp for someone to spend the night in the stable? Well, I know where we can get that money," he thinks to himself. Then he makes his way out to the wagon, and gets two pouches of gold from the bottom of the wagon. He takes the two pouches (each with 30 gp), and goes back inside.
"Here you are, sir, and thank you for a safe night. Now, what can you tell us about where we are heading? We are moving into the Wyrmsfut to try to find someone that can help our poor lady-friend, who has been cursed to wear a magical mask. How do we find the swamp, and what do you know about it?"
Bralin Monday April 5th, 2004 9:08:06 AM
The dwarf's eyebrow shoots up as the innkeeper names his price. Expensive place. Bralin makes a mental note to ask the price of lodging before partaking in any more hospitality.
He rolls 'Swords of Light' around in his brain a couple times before dismissing it. The group's name means little to him anyway.
Might as well get his money's worth while waiting to move out. Bralin stuffs a few more muffins into his mouth, and then steps outside. He moves whenever everybody else does.
Lorth Monday April 5th, 2004 9:40:57 AM
Lorth hears the price and digs through his pack. He then walks over to the inn keeper and dumps 24 platinum, 7 gold, 3 silver, 8 copper and a voucher for 55 gps and 1 sp onto the floor. "Obviously you need it much more than I do. Perhaps you can give the next weary travelers a break in your exhorbitant prices. Good day sir.", he spins on his heel and walks out the door. Lorth then makes haste to catch up with his friends on the hill.
Alkali Monday April 5th, 2004 4:00:16 PM
Alkali is astonished at the large price set before the party. He goes towards his purse, but when Andarth and Lorth give their money, he stops. Someone has to carry money, he reasons.
At the mention of the name "Swords of Light", Alkali looks puzzeled and constantly looks at his belt.
Kedarn Monday April 5th, 2004 5:32:24 PM
Hearing the price Kedarn starts to dig out the money whwen Andrath hands the ammout. Kedarn looks to Andrath then nods accnoledgement to Andrath.
Kedarn says to Lorth "you may need some of that in order to get some better armor or weapons."
Hearing the name that Cadmar gave Kedarn looks over at Cadmar then says "fine name, a very fine name. Now let us live up to it in each our own way."
Kedarn tells Lucy "May Gargul watch over you and your home." then Kedarn turns and leaves to meet up with his friends.
DM Bob & Carla d4=3 d4=2 Monday April 5th, 2004 10:06:43 PM
While Cadmar, Cassandra, and Elerinn take in the vista, Marcus heeds a shouted call from his father and takes off down the trail back towards the roadhouse.
Marcus arrives, huffing and puffing from his run, as Samuel finishes rummaging around in the boxes in the back of the wagon. "I don't have much, but please accept these goods by way of 'thank'ee for helpin' me, and my boy, Marcus, here." Samual hands Andrath a large canvas bag. "Take the brigands' equipment too. They'll not be wantin' it where they'll be going!" With that, Samuel goads the oxen into moving, and the wagon squeaks and groans as the big beasts start up the trail. Marcus sits in the wagon with his back to his father. His eyes are fixed on the three manacled bandits tied to the wagon. A light crossbow rests across his knees.
When Andrath looks into the bag he'll discover 2 tents, 3 flasks of alchemist's fire, 2 sunrods.
With a surprised expression, Luther receives full payment of his price, no questions asked! He is about to start telling Andrath about Wyrmsfut when the paladin dumps his riches on the floor and stalks off. The half-elf's clenched fists show white knuckled, and his face flushes hot with anger. "Oh! Father!" cries Lucy as she rushes to her father's side, "I don't think that man meant you ill. He just doesn't know about your little game." Lucy's green eyes are wide with fear and concern for her father as she looks about the room at those who remain.
Kedarn tries to diffuse the situation with counsel to Lorth that he should keep his money for future upgrade of his equipment.
Luther crouches down and selects a single platinum piece, growling, "for payment of future services." He beckons to those still inside the roadhouse, Alkali, Bralin, and Andrath, then moves over to the hearth, selecting a partially burned twig he begins to draw in the cinder dust. "Wyrmsfut was created when a landslide sum'at blocked up the drainage of water from this 'ere valley. This 'ere marsh is shaped like a wyrm's footprint, with three 'toes' goin' west, and a single 'toe' goin' east. Each toe traces a lil' crik that flows through the swamp. Where they come together, they make a larger crik that meanders down the middle of this 'ere western 'toe'. This 'ere stream 'ventually dumps into this 'ere Peaseblossom River near my crossin'." Luther stands up, tossing the stick into the fire. "Ony way across the Peaseblossom is on my ferry!" That said, Luther tosses the platinum coin into the air, and snatches it back, a smug look on his gaunt face.
Cadmar Tuesday April 6th, 2004 1:58:52 AM
When it is time to pay, Cadmar hands over 8 gold coins with a raised eyebrow.
As he strolls with Elerinn in search of Cassandra, he replies: "Well, you remember that last time we were trying to give ourselves a name we couldn't reach an agreement. Some said we should wait until people gave us a name themselves. I just didn't want our group to be called <that bunch of troublemakers that follows Kedarn around>." Cadmar smiles again, obviously in good mood today. "Anyway, as Kedarn said, Swords of Light represents noble aspirations that need to be lived up to. Let's see if the name sticks."
"You know, if something was to eat me in Wyrmsfut" he adds half-jokingly "maybe the others would keep the name to honor my memory?"
Bralin Tuesday April 6th, 2004 8:36:22 AM
Bralin takes in the exchange between Lucy and her father with some confusion. "What game do ye play?" he asks her, clearly seeking understanding.
The innkeeper's words seem straightforward enough. One platinum for passage is the message the dwarf understands.
"We go," he replies in businesslike fashion, and starts for the door.
Lorth Tuesday April 6th, 2004 10:03:10 AM
Lorth thanks Samuel for his generosity as his wagon pulls away. He then checks his armor and weapons over, shifts his equipment around to get comfortable and waits for the word to move out.
Elerinn Tuesday April 6th, 2004 4:46:20 PM
Elerinn laughs when Cadmar suggests his possible tragic demise inside Wyrmsfut and says: "Well Cadmar, I'll honor your memory if you get eaten. At least your death won't be forgotten!" With his last word, Elerinn suddenly goes silent, and returns to the roadhouse.
When the innkeeper restates the prices of his services, Elerinn doesn't know if the man is being serious. Trying his luck, the gnome asks: "How about 4 gold pieces for this night?"
Elerinn will give the innkeeper whatever he demands. He then suggests to cross the Peaseblossom River as soon as possible. His curiousity has replaced his fears about moving into Wyrmsfut.
Kedarn Tuesday April 6th, 2004 5:18:33 PM
Kedarn returns with the others to the inn after meeting up with Cadmar and the others.
Alkali Tuesday April 6th, 2004 5:55:55 PM
"Shaped like a wyrm's foot? Interesting." When Luther picks up the coin and flips it, Alkali mentions, "Then its settled. We cross the Peaseblossom River." He gets his belongings ready and prepares to leave.
Andrath Tuesday April 6th, 2004 7:25:02 PM
Following Samuel's suggestion, Andrath removes the armour from the 3 brigands. "As my well-travelled friend has said, I don't think that you'll be needing that where you are going." The elf is none too gentle as he removes the studded leather armour from the three humans.
He nods and thanks Samuel for the bag and the items. "I am sure that they will come in handy in the future. I am only pleased that we were able to help you. And keep an eye on that one," he says, pointing to the brigand that was carrying the wand. "He was carrying a wand, and likely that means that he can use magic. I suggest you keep him closely bound, and gagged as much as possible. If he starts to say anything that sounds even remotely arcane, fill him full of bolts!" He puts the armour into the canvas sack, and heads back to the inn. He calls out over his shoulder, "I left one of the sacks of 30 gold from the thieves in the bottom of the wagon, so have a drink on them!"
The elf arrives back in the common room, in time to hear the directions to the Wyrmsfut. He pulls out a piece of parchment, and his pen and ink, and quickly sketches the map that the ferryman has drawn in the dust. "Hopefully, we can return safely this way, and see you again in a little while."
Once he has the map in hand, Andrath says to the party, "In this sack, I have some items that Samuel gave to us as payment, as well as the items from the brigands, which Samuel advised us to take. Samuel and Marcus have already left, but if any of you want to chase after them, and give the items back to the thieves, you had better speak up now. However, I am trying this magic armour on, right now." Then he reaches in the bag, and pulls out the magical studded leather armour. He shrugs off his chain shirt, and places it in the bag. Then the elf tries on the leather for size. If it fits, he will continue to wear it, unless anyone voices a strong opinion against it. "Now, do any of you want to carry the rapier, or to try to figure out what the wand can do? Also, we can share out the other items that Samuel gave us: 2 sunrods and 3 alchemist fire flasks. I can carry the two tents, and we can all use them tonight."
[OOC: Bob and Carla, I am assuming that the armour is masterwork quality, as well as magicked. If Andrath continues to wear it, and is in combat, I will post his AC as if it were normal masterwork studded leather armour, and you will have to adjust if it is more protective. OK?]
DM Bob & Carla Tuesday April 6th, 2004 10:02:20 PM
Cadmar, Cassandra, and Elerinn depart the lookout and make their way down the trail. They joke amongst themselves trying to make light of their concern about the Wyrmsfut. They meet Kedarn near the bottom and Lorth just outside the roadhouse.
Inside, Lucy stoops and gathers up the coins dropped by the paladin. In a low voice, the maid answers Bralin's question,"pa likes a game with the customers, see. He asks 'em for four times what we wants, to see how good they be at bargain'in. Always a bit of a gamblin' man, my pa. Why he even won this 'ere roadhouse and ferry from the previous owner, in a game o' cards. That was back in his soldierin' days."
Alkali witnesses a strange event, as a smile spreads across gruff Luther's bony face. "Yer a smart 'un fer a little feller. Across the Peaseblossom it is then!" Luther leads Alkali and Andrath outside, with Lucy and Bralin bringing up in the rear. Once outside, Lucy walks over to Kedarn and hands the coins to the party's leader, "we won't be keepin' these. Jus' the pouches with the 60 gold, and the one platinum coin."
Luther directs the group towards the landing where the ferry is tied up, then fetches a small but muscular mule he harnesses to the wheel through which is threaded the ferry cable. Lucy stands by the mule, as Luther picks up a pole almost three times his height, and steps onto the ferry. The ferry is big enough and sturdy enough to carry a wagon, and can easily accommodate the seven Swords of Light.
(OOC: Andrath paid for the party with the 60 GP taken from the bandits. One of Lorth's platinum pieces will be kept for passage across the Peaseblossom. Greg, Andrath's armour adjustment noted!)
Cadmar Wednesday April 7th, 2004 2:47:53 AM "Be it down hill or up hill Be it bandit, wolf, or chill Be it back bent under load To the Wyrmsfut leads our road..."
Cadmar whistles, pulls away his hood, and turns his face to the sun, eyes closed.
When Andrath mentions newly acquired items he replies: "Well, I have already added what Samuel offered us to our list. We will probably make these party items, but more on this later."
"As for the bandits' possessions, I understand your claim, Andrath. It feels right to me to keep the arms of a defeated foe. However, I have already relinquished any claim to them, and I would be a... hypocryte... if I wanted a share in them now that I learned they are magical." Another mischevious smile appears briefly on the ranger's face, who is obviously amused by some personal joke.
"So, you decide what you want to do with them, and if others want a share in them I will just write it down on the list and you can discuss it after we make it back safely to Jarlswolf and the items are identified."
Cadmar walks up to Bralin. "I really appreciate you coming with us. I was born in this valley, but have never been that deep into the Culverwood before. Where do you hail from?"
Lorth Wednesday April 7th, 2004 9:45:10 AM
Lorth follows the party to the ferry and finds a place to stand while it moves across. He pays no attention to the offer of the bandits equipment.
Elerinn Wednesday April 7th, 2004 11:09:00 AM
Elerinn, excited by the fact Wyrmsfut is so close now, finishes Cadmar's song, in his high soprano voice:
"To the Wyrmsfut leads our road... If Cadmar dissapears, consumed by dragons or bears We will continue, sad but swift until Cassandra's curse is lift!"
With a impish look on his face, Elerinn smiles at Cadmar and steps onto the large ferry. Although the gnome can't swim, he doesn't seem to have a problem with travelling by boat.
Elerinn doesn't take any of the bandits' items, but doesn't say anything about Andrath taking them.
Like Cadmar, Elerinn pulls away the hood of his diamond-patterned cloak and enjoys the warm sun. The weather seems so much better compared to the last couple of days. As soon as everyone is on the ferry, Elerinn says: "Off we go! May Wardd guide us through the dragon's paw, and protect Cadmar from things that are hungry!"
Bralin Wednesday April 7th, 2004 11:11:46 AM
The dwarf nods at Lucy's explanation. A game then. It appears his comrades were unaware of the innkeeper's intent as well.
Bralin shakes his head at Andrath's offer. He's interested in the wand, but surely one of the group is as well.
When Cadmar approaches him, he says in low voice, "Yon innkeeper expected price negotiations. Mayhap future proprieters will as well."
In answer to the man's opening statement, he shrugs. "Your quest is just."
The dwarf pauses for a moment as he considers the next question. "I hail from the Red Hills, and the caverns therein," he says. "Of late, I spent a time in the Crying Woods near Floating City."
Another pause. "Comparing that wood with this should prove enlightening."
Bralin stands on the ferry, waiting for transport.
Kedarn Wednesday April 7th, 2004 5:14:13 PM
Listening to the others Kedarn tells Cadmar and the others "the items from Samuel and the bandits I say go into party goods and that they be used by everyone in the party as normal with party items. If you would like to use the wand Bralin and able to use it then please do so in the best interests of the party." Kedarn will move over to Lorth and say "Lorth, Luther was just testing us here is your money. I feel that in the future you will be needing it to help yourself keep your equipment up so that you can continue aiding others in Gargul's name." Then Kedarn will hand Lorth the money.
Kedarn heads over to and walks onto the ferry and waits to set off across the river.
Alkali Wednesday April 7th, 2004 7:21:14 PM
Alkali follows Luther observing his movements. He starts to ponder how the world would be if it was run by halflings. No large spears like that. Or gigantic boats either... boats were a new thing. Alkali's hawk comes and rests on his shoulder.
ADM Bob and Carla Thursday April 8th, 2004 12:22:38 AM
Luther uses his long pole to tap and poke at the ice along the shore and around the barge-like boat. Once he has freed the ferry, and the members of the party have taken their places, he calls to his daughter on shore. Raising his hand in the air, he draws a circle over his head. Lucy gets the mule moving, and with a small jerk the ferry starts to move.
The passage across the Peaseblossom is uneventful. Luther uses his long pole to push at a chunk of ice or a partially submerged log in order that the ferry doesn't become stuck in transit. The current in the middle of the river is strong, and the water dark, but the ferry makes good time.
When Cadmar sings his song, Cassandra begins to howl at the mention of the 'wolf'. Elerinn's verse wreaks a similar reaction as Cassandra growls and then twitters as the mask transforms first to a 'bear' and then a 'swift' and finally back to it's usual shape at the mention of the young witch's name. She brings her hands to her face in despair and moves to the far corner of the ferry, turning her back to the group.
The morning sun melts the frost off the trees, and warms the adventurer's faces, but it is not enough to melt the snow on the ground.
The ferry pulls in to the small dock on the eastern side of the river. The half-elf jumps on to the dock and lowers a ramp, allowing the party to disembark. Luther takes up a position on the dock, leaning against his long pole, and watches, wondering about the strange young woman...
Cadmar Thursday April 8th, 2004 2:24:11 AM
"Oh good Domi, I am sorry, Cassandra!" The ranger is instantly feeling very, very stupid and guilty. Having no idea what else he could do to make his blunder right he just sits down in the far corner of the ferry, red on his face, and promises himself to shut up.
Kedarn d20+5=25 d20+5=7 Thursday April 8th, 2004 4:07:35 AM
As Kedarn leaves the ferry he tells Luther "Thank you for the ride across the river. How can we get hold of you for a ride back across on our return?"
Kedarn then looks to the others saying "let us continue but be on our guard." then Kedarn takes up his normal location in the marching order.
As they move along Keddarn will keep his eyes moving looking for any problems while keeping an eye on the others to see if anyone needs any help.
*** spot: 25 (nat 20) listen: 7 ***
Lorth Thursday April 8th, 2004 8:39:34 AM
Lorth takes the money from Kedarn, "I care not for his games. If the innkeeper doesn't want it, it will go to the poorbox instead. I will hold it until that time."
Lorth leaves the ferry and readies himself for hiking and battle. He straps his shield to his arm but leaves his weapons hanging from his equipment.
Bralin d20+2=22 Thursday April 8th, 2004 11:59:03 AM
The dwarf's left eyebrow rises up nearly level with the top of his head as Cassandra goes through her various transformations.
If Bralin had any further questions regarding the nature of the quest, that display satisfied them.
Since neither the cleric or the mage seem interested in the wand, Bralin takes it and spends a while trying to figure it out.
He keeps pace with the others while playing with the wand, paying enough attention to the others so that the dangerous end isn't pointed at anybody.
[I don't know what check. Spellcraft maybe? 22 [nat 20 Note - Bralin has the Magic Domain, so arcane isn't a problem]
Elerinn Thursday April 8th, 2004 6:02:10 PM
Elerinn puts both hands in front of his mouth when he sees Cassandra changing forms again. The thing that was meant to cheer her up a bit, did the exact oppossite. During the rest of the trip, he remains quiet, sometimes looking at Cadmar with an embarrassed look on his face.
When the reaches the other side of the dark river, Elerinn jumps out. He thanks Luther for his services, and asks how to inform him when these are needed again to get back to the other side of the river.
Andrath Thursday April 8th, 2004 9:38:53 PM
Andrath steps off the ferry, looks at Luther and says, "Thank you for the safe passage. I assume we can just call across the river to you on the return trip. Now, could you please help me with some information? I asked you earlier in the inn [OOC: Please see my post of Monday, April 5th], what can you tell us about where we are heading? We are moving into the Wyrmsfut to try to find someone that can help our poor lady-friend, who has been cursed to wear a magical mask. How do we find the swamp, and what do you know about it? What advice can you give us?"
"Or perhaps we need to purchase your information. Let me see ... I will offer you one-quarter of a copper piece for your directions and advice. Will that suffice?"
Alkali Thursday April 8th, 2004 10:29:06 PM
Alkali watches how Luther drives the entire ride. Afterwards, he jumps off and thanks Luther for his help.
DM Bob & Carla Thursday April 8th, 2004 11:36:06 PM
"Ere, there be no need for that." Luther jingles the money in his pocket and refuses Andrath's coins. "You've already paid 'andsome". Luther casts a sorrowful eye on Cassandra, scowls at proud Lorth, and shakes his head as the rest of the party disembark.
Kedarn takes in the small beach, a rocky hillock and a dark gloomy forest pressing close to the side of the river. There is a very narrow trail leading straight into the forest, and another, slighly better established trail running north and south along the river. The party leader doesn't see or hear anything that would unnerve him.
"Don't know who you'd be looking for in that forsaken swamp" the ferryman says, "Nowt but trouble in there. Still, from t'other side, you can sometimes see lights at night. Commin' from the middle of the swamp it seems."
"Follow this trail south along the river. Past the second bend it branches to the east. That 'un'll take you into the Wyrmsfut. Runs along a crik, it does" Luther draws a quick map in the snow depicting the small trail that bisects the westernmost 'toe' of the swamp. "Mind you watch yerself in there. That forest is mean-spirited. Has a way of closin' in behind a man, it does. The mist is no help neither. Warm and damp no matter the season, as if the mighty wyrm had just lifted his foot, if you know what I mean."
Luther waves to Lucy and the ferry begins the return journey. "Ring the bell when you want across". The dour ferryman points to an iron bell hung from one of the nearby trees.
(OOC: Map to follow tomorrow)
Cadmar Friday April 9th, 2004 5:13:21 AM
Cadmar adjusts the harness of his backpack and checks if the scimitar's handle is easy to reach. "Well, this is it, I guess."
As the party is getting ready to depart Cadmar walks up to Lorth and says: "You know, I was wondering for some time now. What did you do before you became a paladin?"
Lorth Friday April 9th, 2004 8:46:22 AM
Lorth smiles at Cadmar and relates his history for all that would listen.
"My life was a simple one, until five years ago when the giants came. It was but my 14th year. My mother was one of the ladies of nature, a witch some call them. She would use simple herbs and spells to help the sick, both animal and people and grow simple woodland gardens. My father a simple woodsman, who loved and supported my mother and I through his huntings and trappings."
...he pauses briefly in contemplation...
"After the giants came things changed, my mother went into hiding deep in the woods. I was told it was because she was connected somehow to a coven, which had made itself enemies of the Jarl. My mother made infrequent visits to me when she could, making sure all was well.
When the Dread war started my father was conscripted into the army and I was left in our simple cottage, alone. My father sent word home when he could, telling of horrific events, of things that would not die. Sadly my father's letters stopped suddenly and we learned that he was killed by a terrible creature, which drained his life-force, in the battle of the Crimson fort, somewhere near the Dread border.
My poor mother seemed to change some after this, sad and morose, she began to teach me of the unnatural things that walked the Wold. She spoke of Gargul, and how he viewed these unnatural occurrences. She spoke of my father's death and how it was not meant to be."
...he swallows hard...
"I plan to someday travel to the Dread lands and retrieve my father's remains for proper burial, perhaps Gargul willing, I will also avenge his death."
He stops silent, keeping any more thoughts to himself.
Bralin Friday April 9th, 2004 9:03:27 AM
The dwarf listens in on Lorth's tale in silence. It seems to him just a slightly different version of a history he's heard many times. Bralin mentally shakes his head. So much misery out in this Wold.
Bralin continues messing with the wand as he follows his companions down the trail. [Anything from last post?]
Kedarn Friday April 9th, 2004 6:20:32 PM
Kedarn listens to Lorth's tale making mental notes on what help Kedarn might be able to offer at a later date.
Alkali Friday April 9th, 2004 11:07:52 PM
Alkali trods along the trail listening to Lorth's story. Lorth's tale of sadness puts Alkali deep in thought.
Cadmar Saturday April 10th, 2004 1:12:19 AM
"I lost a brother on the fields of Crimson Fort. He was just fifteen when he was taken into the army... I don't have more love for giants than I do for the Dread."
DM Bob & Carla Saturday April 10th, 2004 4:37:42 PM
The party watches the ferry return to the other side of the river while they listen to Lorth's tale. After adjusting their packs, they follow Andrath south along the trail. The Peaseblossum River flows cold and fast to their right, it's dark waters heading for Izen.
Bralin experiments with the wand as they walk but fails to make anything magical happen. [OOC the wand must be identified before it can be used]
Within an hour, the party comes to a fork in the trail. The way east is obviously less well travelled than the trail leading south.
[Please post your marching order]
Cadmar Sunday April 11th, 2004 1:59:49 AM
"How are we to find our man, I wonder? He could be anywhere in this forest." Cadmar will take a place somewhere in the front of the party, first or second after Andrath.
Elerinn Sunday April 11th, 2004 6:36:00 AM
Elerinn listens to the various stories and these have much in common with his. He doesn't feel like telling his own, however. Rather quiet, Elerinn positions himself somewhere in the middle of the group.
When he sees the fork and examines the two paths, he says: "What do you think? We are searcing for a feral creature, so we could take the less traveled road...I don't know."
Bralin Sunday April 11th, 2004 8:50:32 AM
Bralin stows the wand, not all that surprised at the results of his inspection. In time, he'll learn how to do that. In time...
At the fork in the road, he starts down the east path, drawing up short when the others stop for a discussion. "Yon innkeep said east," he reminds them in a toneless bass voice.
As Andrath and Cadmar seem intent to lead, the dwarf falls back to the rear-guard. He checks the back trail frequently as they continue into the wood.
Andrath d20+11=24 d20+15=33 Sunday April 11th, 2004 7:05:53 PM
As per usual, Andrath leads the way into the swamp along the eastern trail, some 40'-50' in front of the party. He keeps his eyes and ears open as he moves [OOC: Search 24, spot 33], careful to watch his footing along the trail. He tries out moving in the new armour, to make sure that it fits well.
As he turns onto the trail and starts to head east, he calls back, "If I raise my fist over my head, stop where you are, and try to be as quiet as possible. I may scout a little ahead if I spot something. I will give a shout if I need you immediately; otherwise I will come back and let you know what I have found."
Kedarn d20+5=25 d20+5=18 Monday April 12th, 2004 8:23:24 AM
Kedarn walks along with the group in the second to last position. Kedarn will keep an eye on the others to see if anyone is needing help.
*** Spot: 25 Listen: 18 ***
Lorth Monday April 12th, 2004 8:50:59 AM
"I am sorry for your loss. Perhaps fate has brought us together as companions, and we will give proper goodbyes to both our loved ones.", Lorth replies to Cadmar.
Lorth then takes up the position behind Andrath, but near the party.
