The Grass Swift

DM George "You can call me sir"
Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 3:51:12 PM

Mac volunteers to help out as much as he can and is put to work loading crates. The last crate is loaded after about an hour and the dockhands depart.

The sailors are still busy coiling ropes and scrubbing decks. Another hour passes with everyone standing around discussing tactics and generally getting frustrated.

Flea hears the sailors saying, "Did you see that group coming on board? Scary looking. Don't want to run into the one with the horns in a back alley."

Another conversation, "I don't get combat pay! I can't believe we have to chase down a raiders ship. We are all gonna die!"

First mate to second mate, "I hope the Captain gets back with that sail. That pack over there is getting restless. I hope they don't start trouble."

A wagon starts driving up the pier with two gentlemen on the seat. One looks like a standard working stiff while the other is older. When he gets closer, you will see he is much older. He stands around 5'9" 155 pounds and has very grey hair. A long wooden pipe is clenched in his teeth and a grey smoke raises gently from it. He eases himself from the wagon gingerly and yells, "Let's get this sail unloaded, and stowed!" He has a definite air of command about him.

He notices the Bloodpack and walks over to them. "I am Captain Pradnor. It is a pleas...."
Suddenly the Captain is seized with a bout of coughing. He pulls a scrap of white clothe form his back pocket and wipes him mouth. It comes away stained with blood.

"I am sorry. Again I am Captain Pradnor. We need to get moving quickly if we are going to catch the white hands who assualt the town. Let's get everyone aboard and we can talk more after I get the ship picking"

Trellus  d20+4=19
Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 4:37:57 PM

The young man eagerly siezes the old man's hand. He's been going crazy just sitting and watching.

"Many shadows, Captain. I'm Trellus of the Bloodpack. We're on our way." the cleric reponds, and waves at his friends to climb on board.

As the group is getting on board, Trellus steps up next to the captain and says in a low voice, "Captain, I'm a healer of Domi. After we're underway, I bet I can weave some picks with that cough."

[Diplomacy 19]

Flea
Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 9:06:19 PM

The rogue returns to the boat where the pack is assembled, and trails Trellus as he follows the captain on board.

She nudges Tishe', "Do you think we'll be assigned general quarters with the crew?" Flea looks a little worried. Living in a small hut with her friend Gillan, or camping on the plains, is one thing, but sleeping below decks with a boatload of rough plains-sailors is quite another. "When I first travelled across the plains, I spent most of my time on deck, hiding amongst the coiled ropes and storage boxes."

Gilan
Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 10:23:20 PM

Gilan slips onto the boat, but holds onto his pack. He is not one to let others handle his gear unless in an emergency or if it is one of his packmates. He smiles amiably to the captain of the ship and takes a spot out of the way by the railing.

Glancing to Flea he does share her concern about the sleeping arrangments. "I have gotten kind of use to the company at nights...lets hope they have some kind of good arrangements." He smiles openly at Flea as he laughs. He had not thought to be back on any type of boat ever again and now here he was. With an now familiar feel he pulls the compass out of his pouch and holds it gently as he turns to get a feel for it again.

Mac
Tuesday March 23rd, 2004 11:07:14 PM

Mac snaps to attention as the Captain introduces himself. Seeing Trellus gesturing them onboard he offers a hand to anyone who wants the help aboard.

It's only been a day - where did his ship-legs go?

Tishe'
Wednesday March 24th, 2004 1:57:43 AM

The small woman thanks Trellus for the correction. "Bright. Sunbaked. Right. That's going to be so hard!", she mock complains. "In HookCity, the light is good and the dark is bad. I can understand shady and sunbaked, but light?" She shakes her head, and, as usual, moves to another subject.

"I weave mostly conjurations, as I've said. So you and Gilan know how to best use my talents, I currently have these spells at my fingertips...

My White Spells: Acid Splash, Detect Magic, Mage Hand, and Read Magic

Red Spells: Spider Climb, Summon Monster (twice), Endure Elements, and Shield

Orange Spells: Glitterdust, Web (twice), and Knock

With preparation I can identify magic items, understand languages, or set magical alarms. And I've also got a couple other spells set in scrolls or potions."

With the arrival of Captain Pradnor, Tishe' is all business-like, swarming up onto the ship, and deftly stowing her gear in thier assigned place. "Stay with me, Flea. As I've said, I've some experience sailing. The sailors will keep thier manners no matter where we sleep. And Mac is a facinating person to trade stories with." She looks at the big minotaur fondly. "There is a sharp mind behind the rough exterior. Sort of like Grymash."

Jake
Wednesday March 24th, 2004 11:59:45 AM

Jake shows up just in time, and hops on board gingerly. This is going to be his first time on a boat...and he's unused to it, even as it's being moored still.
"Shady..." he mumbles as he moves along the deck towards an area to secure items (A hold or other part?), his pack, armor, and other goods in hand.

Grymash
Wednesday March 24th, 2004 4:00:15 PM

Gry makes his way on deck. He is cautious at first. Shifting his weight from his right and left foot against the deck proves to be sturdy enough for his standards. However, Gry preferrs to keep his belongings with him and not stored away in some cargo hold to be lifted by a potential pirate.

Anuk
Wednesday March 24th, 2004 6:23:10 PM

Anuk climbs aboard with the rest of the pack and gets his gear stowed. Once that's done he reaches into a pocket of his cloak and pulls out the ioun stone. He approaches Trellus and says, "It's been a while since I've brought this out. As I recall, it's got pass without trace, shield of faith, remove fear, expeditious retreat, and a cure light wounds spell. There's room for one more."

Gilan
Wednesday March 24th, 2004 8:12:14 PM

Gilan continues to stand near the railing of the ship looking out at the vast grass before them. He cannot wait to be sailing again, though he hopes this time it will be a different story.

He listens to the others as they talk around him and then moves over to stand by Trellus and Anuk. "What type of spell do you think would be best...how about a higher form of healing?" It is only a suggestion, but with the way battles have went in the past it may not hurt.

DM George "Grassing....Grassing...."
Wednesday March 24th, 2004 10:16:50 PM

The Grass Swift throws off the ropes and the sailors raise the sails. It starts easing itself from the dock and finally leaves Rattledam behind.

The Captain gets together with Gilan and gets a heading. You travel several hours and Gilan notices the compass starting to get warmer.

Night settles and the Grass Swift sails on. The first mate give you the choice of bunking on deck or in the hold. She will say, "On most nights as shady as this, the crew will sleep on deck."

You are fed simple fair but it is not normal. You are eating beans and bread for dinner. Beans being somewhat rare in Rattledam, you find them to be a nice treat.

The night passes without incident and the compass is noticably warmer in the morning.
After a couple of more hours sailing and more beans for breakfast, the lookout calls, "Sail of the port bow!"

When everyone rushes over to look, way in the distance you can see two boats, one looks like the raider's ship and another one mimics the ship you are on. The Captain comes over to the pack and says, "Well I got you here. Now what?"

Grymash (hp57, ac19)  d20+2=14 d20-2=10 d20+2=12
Wednesday March 24th, 2004 11:44:11 PM

Gry's anger begins to boil at the sight of the ships. His first inclination, at this point, would be to ram the Grass Swift into both boats. However, after allowing a second thought, he realizes that to be a bad idea.

Grymash begins to scan the Grass Swift's deck for armaments. He looks for any of those big spear chuckers that struck him back in Rattledam. (Spot 14)

"GRRRRR! How weez keeps those boats from runnin'? Thay's be changin' to da faster boat!" Gry's mind is racing. (Int check 10, Wis check 12) Grymash tries to think of the tactics the orcs would use to attack a ship. Surround it with smaller and faster skiffs, "No!" No skiffs. Herd the ship toward a bare spot in the grass, "No!" Gry knows of no bare spot. Stab hooks and spikes, attached to ropes, at the ships hull and anchor them to the ground, "YESSS!!" Burn the sails, "YESSS!!"

Grymash turns to the Captain, "Yous have any big crossbow chuckers, rope an anchors. Whut 'bout fire ... LOTS of FIIRREE!" Gry pulls out several arrows from his quiver and a vial of oil from his Haversack.

(How far away are the other ships? Are they stopped or moving?)

Tishe'  d20+9=12 d20+10=25
Thursday March 25th, 2004 1:25:01 AM

It's only been a day or two since Tishe' was last on a ship, and she quickly gets into her usual ship life. She spends most her time on deck; during the day turning a small bag of wool into thread with the help of a drop spindle (Weave Craft Check:12); and at night she gazes at the stars and points them out to any who are interested (Astronomy Craft Check:25). Oh, and talking, always interested in something else.

At the shout of sails, all her items are placed back in her backpack and she efficiently readies her weaponry. She moves closer to Gilan to see what the plan is.

"Grymash is right," she compliments. "Fire thier sails and they won't be able to move."

"Another problem is there are two ships. Is the second one a pirate ally? Or a captured ship with prisoners on it? And if they split up, we have to stop both, for surely the information about Rattledam has been passed back and forth."

"Oh, and if we can see them, they've already seen us, so we need to do it fast."

Flea  d20+2=4
Thursday March 25th, 2004 1:28:44 AM

The gnome quite enjoys the beans, and likely eats too many. When the legumes weave their magic, the rogue tries to hide her red face, and says out loud, "Augh! Jake! You grass eater!"

Flea studies the boats and tries to discern if the ship that looks like the raiders ship is making friendly overtures or attacking the other ship, but they are too far away for her to make out much.

Trellus
Thursday March 25th, 2004 10:38:20 AM

The cleric is a bit annoyed that the captain won't let him look at his cough, but you wear the cloak you've woven, so he doesn't pursue it.

As night falls, he casts Enlarge Person into the last slot of Anuk's Ion Stone. And in the morning, Trellus conducts his daily devotions to Domi.

That morning, the other boats come in sight.
"Are they stopped?" the man asks the sailors.

"We need to get closer!" he tells the captian. "Gry's right. What weapons do you have that can slow them down?"

Turning to Sterlin he asks, "Can your grass weaving spell trap those boats?"

Gilan (HP: 43, AC: 18)
Thursday March 25th, 2004 2:56:38 PM

Gilan makes himeslef available for the captain as he has the course they must take in his hands. That night he sleeps out on the deck of the ship, comfortable in the knowledge that they will most assuredly catch the other ship.

Sure enough the next morning they do just that, when they see the sails in the distance. He makes his way over to Trellus and Sterlin who are standing together. "Do you think that our entangle spells will help in holding the boats Sterlin? I have one at my disposal." He glances to his fellow druid and shakes his head not really sure. With another more devilish grin he laughs a little. "If we can get close enough I can dump a little water on thier ship. That should stir things up for them." He knows that with the insects the way they are, they would swarm the ship.

With another thought he slips his hand inside of a hidden pocket on his belt and pulls out a potion. He hands it to Gry with a smile. The potion has what would appear to be a person growing larger. "Think you can make use of this big guy." He cannot help but laugh more as that is exactly what he will become, but bigger.

Anuk  d20+10=18
Thursday March 25th, 2004 4:57:38 PM

During dinner Anuk enjoys the treat, one of the few times he's had beans since arriving in Rattledam many years earlier. But, the sudden unpleasant aroma makes him wrinkle his nose. Hearing Flea point out the 'culprit', Anuk says, "Jake, take that up on deck, would ya?"

At night, he spends some time up top with Tishe' and the others, learning about the stars. He finds the conversation quite interesting.

When morning comes, he gives the ioun stone to Trellus so the cleric can cast his spell into it, then he heads off to find an area to be alone. He locates a nice little niche among some boxes, rope, and other cargo and sits down to do a little meditating (prepares Entangle). As he comes out of his reverie, he is surprised to see Twinge slither out of a coil of ropes nearby. Anuk hisses softly to the creature as he strokes it, then says, "So there you are. I looked for you yesterday, but didn't see you around. I thought we'd left you behind." He gathers the snake up to his shoulders and goes out to rejoin the pack.

When the raider's ship is spotted, Anuk listens to the plans being discussed. "I like the fire idea," he says, "but won't the fire be as much a danger to the grass as the ship? Maybe if we can determine where they're headed we could slow 'em down with an entangle spell or two and get far enough ahead to create a fire break and cut 'em off." He looks over the sea of grass, trying to determine if this plan might be feasable. (knowledge plains - 18)

Mac (HP: 48, AC: 16)  d20+4=11
Thursday March 25th, 2004 5:24:21 PM

Mac looks across to the two ships, looking for critical points (Spot Check 11), but sees nothing beyond the expected. He looks down at the gass passing by and asks, "You can't actually *swim* in that, can you?"

"Fire arrows? Good idea Gry! Do any-yee have Jump magics? I'm thinkin' of gettin' o'er there an' bindin' their masts fast, or maybe the rudders."

DM George
Thursday March 25th, 2004 5:44:32 PM

The Captain says, "We are a trading ship, not a warship. We have a few bows and crossbows for defense and hunting and some belaying pins for defense but no real armaments. I thought the sunbaked council told you that! You will be doing the fighting. I am just to get you ther..." The Captain falls into another fit of coughing that seems to paralize him for a few moments.

The Grass Swift is still heading towards the 2 ships. The distance is closing but at least a mile seperates the 2 vessels. You can see the vessals break apart from each other. The Raiders ship is heading towards you and the other is moving away.

Mac
Thursday March 25th, 2004 7:17:24 PM

"Aye Captain! How close are y' proposin' we get?"
Mac notices the ships separating - scuttling his initial plan. He looks up at the rigging, and his face fails to hide the ideas running through his head.

Flea
Thursday March 25th, 2004 8:10:15 PM

"Maybe we should try to cut off the farthest ship, and work backwards?" volunteers the rogue. She doesn't like the idea of the less obvious ship getting away without having the opportunity to learn if any of Rattledam's secrets have been spilled.

The gnome siddles up to Trellus and speaks her piece, "I don't know about the rest of the pack, but I've got a potion of invisibility I could share, and I hide really well. If most of us could get invisible, the captain could signal the ships, and say that he wants to trade with them. We could board them all sneaky like!"

Flea makes sure all her weapons are upon her, in particular her fancy new gnome hooked hammer.

Grymash (hp57, ac19)  d20-2=6 d20+2=18 d20+4=17 d4=2 d20+4=19
Thursday March 25th, 2004 9:08:50 PM

(Int 6, Wis 18, Spot 17)

Grymash bites the cork off the vial of oil and holds the cork snug in his teeth. The heat of the morning sun has thined the oil and it pours easily across the arrowheads (2). After recorking the oil, he quickly places it in his belt pouch for easy retrieval. Gry takes the potion from Gilan and gives him a big menacing grin. "Ohhh, Gry know dis one, shady!"

After hearing the comments from the Captain and his own pack, Gry comes up with an idea. "HIDE!? Why dont weez just kills them all and claim da boat for da pack." His eyes widen as the idea slowly expands in his mind. "Then wit da bandit boat weez could group up wit da other boat. Other boat not know it be us. Da treadles not know wut hit'em!! YEAH!"

Grymash's crooked smile gets even more menacing. Then a question wrinkles his brow. "Hows weez fool da bandit boat ta let pack board them? GRY KNOW!! Weez hide! Is dat good idea? Now dat be sneaky!"

Gry looks back at the approaching boat to see if they are arming themselves and preparing for battle (spot 19). "Lets make up minds quick, theys be comin'!" Grymash pulls his bow off his shoulder and readies an arrow.

Jake
Friday March 26th, 2004 1:50:32 AM

If there's one thing Jake loves, it's these beans. Though he takes a few for the meal, he smuggles more later, and attempts to experiment with them for himself. He somehow fries them with enough spices and chilis to make even someone with grass-sickness ignore their tumbling tummies, if only to pay attention to their burning tongues. As usual with the fighter, everything is either tonguebitingly hot or refreshingly mild... He makes a resolution to somehow smuggle more beans, maybe making a trade for something else.

He can't help but hang off every inch of the ship, nearly losing his grip at one point as he hangs over the side, trying to touch the bottom with his hand. Or, he's at the front, enjoying the hot, dry breeze. Though he doesn't say much to his packmates, it's obvious from his easy smile and the relaxed slouch he takes that he's enjoying himself.

When the morning dawns and the other ship is sighted, Jake blinks and hops out of his hammock easily. He goes over to the second rolled up pack he brought and unfurls it, revealing a veritable armada. With firm practiced motions, the slim youth throws on his protective chain shirt then dons his swordbelt. He decides to leave his usual shirt off, for freedom of movement. Happily humming, he pulls out some new purchases from the town...
"Too bad ah left them polearms," he mutters as he pulls out his sheathed bastard sword, one that in his youth he had fondly named 'Lavantessen', an elvish word roughly translating as 'buttbiter'... Smiling, he sheathes the sword after checking the edge.

He can't help but look over all the other weapons he's got. Enough to arm the entire group, let alone himself. A small, slim emergency dagger goes into the sheath on the back of his right boot, while a mean ribbed bigger cousin goes into a free sheath on his belt. Slowly, he pulls a long curved stick taut, and strings the bow, eyeing the imported work, which cost him quite a pretty penny to take full advantage of his wiry muscles. Slinging over his back goes a quiver of arrows, and he ties a bandana around his head to keep his hair back, discarding his stiff wide-brimmed hat for now.
Cloistered amidst the bedroll are more weapons; a three-headed flail, an etched battle axe, some weird monk weapons he doesn't know how to use, a dozen different daggers that he thought looked cool, two short swords, and so on... so many weapons, he thinks, so little time... With a moments deliberation, he adds a pair of throwing axe and a matching pair of throwing hammers into notches on his belt.
He listens to the others. "It's obvious...we all haveta get both boats, and bring 'em back to tha village, blindfolded and with force, if need be. Can't risk tha location."

"Wall, captain, all ya have ta do is bring us close enough, we'll take 'em for ya. Bring us in fast, and hard, and let us hop on board."

Tishe'
Friday March 26th, 2004 3:56:38 AM

"Fire arrows can burn thier sails," states the small woman, her brown, wavy hair flying in the wind. The Grass Swift must have a firebox, how else did they cook the beans?"

"I wouldn't think any vegetation capture spells will work. After all, all these boats are made from Druid Wood, which repels the Sargrass."

And at the call for magics, Tishe' delves into her satchel. "Let's see... I've got two Invisibility spells on a scroll, and what's this? I've got a flying potion, too!"

"I really think we should go after the merchant first. After all, we can find the pirate with the compass. If the merchant gets away, how are we to find them?"

"Maybe fire the pirate's sails as we go by, then hunt down the merchant, then come back for the pirate?"

Whatever the party decides, Tishe' knows there is fighting coming. She loads her crossbow (move action) and then, using a scroll, casts Mage Armor on herself.

Trellus
Friday March 26th, 2004 8:00:48 AM

"I like the idea of going invisible," the cleric responds, "but how do we get that boat close enough to board?"

"Captain," he asks, "What is the regular pick when you see a boat like that out here? Do you run, or go say hi? We should act like any other boat out here so they don't get shuttlecocked on us."

DM George "Worries"
Friday March 26th, 2004 10:28:56 PM

The ship you are on is shaped like a huge barge. It is around 25' wide and 60' long and around 15' tall. It has 2 masts which support 2 large sails on each mast. Their is a shed like building near the back of the ship. It has the galley, ships officers quarters and and the armory and store room in it. It is 20 wide by 20 long and 10 high. The top is flat and could be used as a firing platform. You would be very exposed.

Because the ship is travelling on grass and not water, the steering system is different than you would normally see. The ship is steered with the sails and two poles which are dragged on the ground to help turn the ship.

The Grass Swift is crewed by 12 people. The Captain and 2 mates plus 9 other sailors. They normally work in 3 shifts as the boat is easy to sail. 2 members will always have to be on the poles. One tends the sails and the officer helps out and commands.

The Baron's ship is coming towards you. The Captain pulls Gilan aside and says, "You better get organized on how you are gonna get on that ship. She is armed with 2 ballastia, one on each end of the ship. She is much taller than we are and looks more manuverable. She has shields lining the sides of her ship to give her people cover. She will most likely circle us using her superior weapons to destroy our sails and kill the crew, then board to finish us off."

The Captain pulls the pipe from his mouth and says, "So what is your plan? I will say if you capture that ship intact, someone will pay a pretty penny for it. A warship constructed with druids wood would be expensive."

The Captain orders his crew to get armed and ready for battle. They don't look happy about it. He then turns back to Gilan and says, "They most likely want to capture my ship for the same reason. The wood is very valuable."

You now have 5 rounds before you come into ballista range.

Gilan (HP: 43, AC: 18)
Friday March 26th, 2004 11:26:48 PM

Gilan listens to the Captain and then shakes his head, battle formation and tactics was not really his style. He looks to Trellus and then makes a recommendation. "We may have to take a few hits if what the Captain is saying is true..and I have no reason to doubt him...but if we cast create water over their ship it will draw the insects....maybe buying us time to board." He glances to Gry and smiles again. "Our big fella here can get even bigger and help out to a point...while we try to disable the ballista." Glancing to Mac his eyes narrow some. "If we had a way to make Mac there big as well we would have an even better advantage." He glances to the rest and then goes over his spells again.

Glancing back to Trellus he awaits his opinion on his idea and see if they should start making preparations.

"Gry in a rage is a good distraction. I'll turn him invisible and he can drink my fly potion so he can get to the more maneuverable ship undetected. Then, Gry can create a diversion at thier steering poles so we can heave alongside and board her."

She has scroll and potion ready.

Mac
Saturday March 27th, 2004 4:03:28 AM

Mac draws three potions out of his pack over his shoulder. He holds one out for Gilan to see. "Aye, this would do the trick. The other two are chasers." [The other two (for those who know their potions) are Cat's Grace and Bull's Strength.]

"How does Fly Magic work? Could I fly and carry Gry o'er to the ship?" [His Light Load encumbrance weight comes in at just over 1200lbs once the potions are in effect.]

Grymash (ac19/21, hp57, protect from evil)
Saturday March 27th, 2004 2:34:31 PM

After hearing Mac's idea about flying and dropping him on the warship, Grymash's face makes a truely wicked expression. Every menacing tooth and tusk gleams within his approving grin. Nodding his head, Gry replies, "YEAHHH!!! Flys Gry over an drops Gry on deck. Gry take potion an get BIG. Smash place up. Mac help too an land on deck with Gry. Weez BIG DUDES fight back ta back. KILL'EM ALL!!! Thay's know way ta Rattledam!" Gry turns to see if any of his pack didnt hear him. "Weez KILL thems ALL! None get away!"

Grymash pauses only to cast a spell upon himself. He mutters a few words of power. Gry's body glows with a short burst of light, to signal the Protection from Evil spell has taken hold.

Gry turns to Mac, "Lets not smash up da big spear bolt chuckers. Just knock thems over ... Grys always want one of those, hee hee!

Grymash then asks the Captain a question. "How many treadles do it take ta run dat warship? How many pack have ta kill?"

(Yes, you can carry up to your max load and still fly.)

Jake
Sunday March 28th, 2004 11:45:47 AM

Jake ponders, scratching his head. He waits for the others to make some suggestions and smiles at Grymash's idea. "Ah, good idea, but ya'd be a biiiiig target up there, Grymarsha. ah mean, Grymash." He wishes he hadn't made that accidental substitution the moment he says it... dang it, this is no time to provoke a fight.

Trellus
Sunday March 28th, 2004 4:33:09 PM

The cleric has been thinking furiously.

"OK dudes, we got two fly potions, one make big potion, I got a make big spell, and Anuk's Stone has got one, and we got a mess of other spells. How about this...

We enlarge Grymash and Mac and give 'em both flying potions. They fly over carrying me and Jake. I get a rope over the side for the rest of you, and try to stop the boat, so you can get on. Jake takes the enlarge potion when we land. We warp up all three before we go, so we got three really big and nasty dudes weaving death and destruction on the boat.

Sterlin, Gilan, and Tishe- try to do something with those steering poles. If you can tangle or break those, those dudes can't turn their boat and our good captain gets the advantage.

He looks at the group.

Flea
Sunday March 28th, 2004 6:29:00 PM

Flea nods at Trellus' idea, and holds out a vial. "This potion can make someone invisible, and Tishe' said she can weave some spells that do the same thing. Make the 'flyers' invisible, and the pirates won't know what hit them! I don't need the potion, since I'm pretty good at hiding."

Flea looks at Trellus, "Do you want 'Nuk and me to stay with the merchant ship and provide support with our arrows, or should we board with the others?"

Anuk
Sunday March 28th, 2004 6:56:50 PM

Anuk nods in agreement at Trellus' plan. He reaches into his cloak and draws out the ioun stone. "I think this is gonna work. Flea, I think you and I should stay on board here until they are stopped. A few flaming arrows into their sails oughta help with that," he says with a grin. Once they're stranded we can hop into the grasses and climb up the rope Trellus is gonna drop over their side."

Anuk looks into the purple stone, concentrating on the right spell. Then he looks at Gry. "Ready, my friend?"

He casts enlarge person on the half-orc.

Tishe' (AC 16, HP 25, Mage Armor)
Monday March 29th, 2004 7:00:36 AM

"They are getting close, so it's time to stop planning and start weaving." Not a tactician, Tishe' is just as happy for Trellus' plan as anything."

The plain-faced woman hands her flying potion to Grymash, then uses a scroll spell to render the half-orc invisible.

"At close range, I'll weave a spell to take out the forward ballista."

Grymash (ac17/19, hp57, protect from evil, enlarge person, fly, invisible)
Monday March 29th, 2004 1:00:52 PM

Grymash listening intently at the instructions of his pack. He hands the Enlarge Person potion to Jake. "Jake, no take it yet. Jake might be too heavys when big." As Gry grows from Trellus' Enlarge spell, he squats down low to one knee and gets hit again with Invisiblity and a Fly spell. "Whoaa!! Gry never fly befores!! Shady!! How 'bout sum hard barkhides for us big dudes!"

Gry puts his large hand on Jakes shoulder to let him know where he is and that he is ready to carry him across.

Gilan (HP: 43, AC: 18)
Monday March 29th, 2004 3:37:56 PM

Gilan smiles as they come up with a different plan. He finds it funny that three of his packmates are going to go large on the other ships deck. "Just remember that the Captain said they will try and soften us up first with ballista fire....we are going to have to move fast to get to their ship." Glancing to Grymash he nods his head as the big guy mentions barkyskin.

He takes the time to hit both Gry and Mac with a barksking spell and then turns to survey the approaching ship. "You guys keep your shuttles cocked as I have another little nasty surprise of my own." His grin turns kind of nasty as he says a silent prayer to Mother Wold.

Monday March 29th, 2004 7:47:24 PM

Anuk watches as the big guys grow and disappear. Hearing Gry discuss the need for speed, he pulls a small seal from his cloak and holds it out for the big guy to take. "Gry, take this with you and use it if you think you'll need it. It's a special seal with a powerful magic that will let all of us move very, very quickly. But it only lasts a few seconds."

(Seal of Quickness. It lasts for one round only letting the entire party move at a speed of 100' normal and up to x3 of that if running. If anyone in the party moves faster than that, they are slowed to that speed.)

Anuk draws his bow and grins at Flea. "Ready to get their attention?" he asks. He turns to the nearest crewmember and asks if they've got any pitch on board with which to light the arrow tips on fire.

IF the pitch is available, Anuk will dip the tips of several arrows in some and light a torch from his pack so that he can create flaming arrows. Once he has an arrow alight he will train his sights on the sails of the oncoming ship, readying an action to fire once he is within range. (hits AC 25)

IF the pitch is unavailable, Anuk moves quickly to find a shielded spot near the side of the ship from which he can train an arrow on crewmembers of the oncoming ship, looking particularly for a victim near the closest ballista. (spot 16, 18 if spotting an orc(favored enemy)) If he sees a good target, he will ready an action to fire the instant the ship is in range. (Hits AC 25, AC 27 if hitting an orc (favored enemy))

As the ship close, the first volley of arrows stream out from the warship. Arrows thud into the sails, into the deck and some just plain miss the ship.

Trellus has a scare as a ballista bolt slams into the deck next to him and he gets slapped with the shaft as it quivers next to his leg. (No damage)

It looks like the enemy was targeting the crewmen in the sails with most of the arrows. None of the arrows are fire arrows

A few of your crewmembers shoot back but are just as ineffectual.

Figure the ships are moving around 40' closer every combat round. Sorry you don't have any pitch or tar on this boat. The lack of water makes that really not necessary.

From his place near the side of the ship, Anuk continues to scan the other boat for appearances of the Baron's men. When a raider shows in his sights, he fires and the arrow arcs toward it's target.

(Hits AC 26 for 9pts (AC 28 for 11pts if hitting an orc - favored enemy))

(OOC: I assume at this point we're within 110ft of the other ship (that's my range w/the bow))

No that is the incremental range of your bow. You take -2 for every 110'. So you should be taking -6 for your bow right now

The ships move closer by 40' and now are only 320' apart for this combat.

The boarding party slips overboard and starts flying towards the warship. You are moving 40' a round and they are to, so closing rates are around 75' a round as you are moving on a di-angle. Your ship is moving around 20' a round so you aren't getting there much faster than the ship.

Flea takes a shot but misses. As the ships close, Flea can tell they aren't fighting humans. Most of the crew seems to be made up of tall furry creatures. The are dressed in armor and manning the balista's and shooting longbows at the Grass Swift.

Tishe casts her spell.

Annuk takes a shot and scores a hit on one of the enemy. The creature grabs the arrow and disappears from view.

Sterlin climbs over the ship and realizes he will have to jump off the moving ship into the grasses (which are 20' tall and look quite dense. He isn't sure if they will hold his weight)

More arrows thud into the ship and one scores a minor hit on the second mate. 1 point of damage.

The same ballista fires a second bolt and scores a hit pinning and instantly killing a crewman, pinning him to the deck.

Much of the crew is busy running the ship but 4 take shots trying to get some revenge for their fallen crewmember. None hit.

Jake
Wednesday March 31st, 2004 1:20:57 AM

There is definitely something unnerving about being carried by a flying, invisible half-orc who vaguely smells like he believes in the cleansing power of piggie plop...
(j/k)
And perhaps it's worsened by the fact that, being invisible, Jake doesn't see how he's being held and has no control over wehre he's going. It just seems like the grass is flowing below him, and they're just floating towards the pirates.. a big easy to hit target, but luckily just invisible.

Invisibility on Grymash and Mac: 4 minutes

The small woman gauges the distance between the ships and shakes her head. "Still too far for good arrow fire and definately too far for spells." She smiles grimly. "At least to strike at them."

Tishe' moves closer to the steering poles. The sailors there are exposed and is a vital area for the ship. Weaving her hands in another gesture, she casts Shield on herself, and presents herself as another target for the pirates instead of the sailors.

He knows that to give any help on board the enemy ship he will have to get a lot closer. His sling is useless at this range as are his spells. He looks to the others that are able to get in some good shots on the ship and smiles. His time will come.

The ships get another 60' closer and are now 220' apart. Grymash and his passenger are at 180' and Mac being less encumbered (I am assuming you took off at the same time) are at 140' away.

The two wasps zip off towards the ship at their masters summoning.

Flea counts around 20 of the strange creatures and a couple humans mixed in. It seems that a really large and strong monster is working the bow ballista. A human male seems to be barking orders. She also notices a female human run up to the male and points towards the ship a look of consternation on her face. They both move toward the stern balista.

The flyers move closer. An occassional arrow going both ways seems to get close once in a while but so far they have been lucky.

Annuk hits one of the big furry monster for 4 points of damage.

Tishe tries to draw fire.

The Captain is running around the deck giving orders when he suddenly stumbles and falls. He looks down at the deck and yells, "What is happening to my ship!? You can see a visible depression in the deck where some of the boards are bent in and cracked.

Sterlin drops into the grass without taking damage. He finds himself in very tall and dense grass. He will be able to move but only at half movement unless he has a spell or feat that will help.

4 friendly crewmembers take shots and 2 get hits giving minor wounds to the monsters.

A barrage of arrows come back mainly falling among the crew. One crewman is hit 3 times and falls down unconcious or dead. Another takes a minor wound and the second mate is hit in the chest. He falls unconcious as well and looks to be in trouble.

Mac hears a crack underneath his feet and finds one of his feet has gone right through the decking up to his knee. Since he is 16 feet tall, that is about 3' down. He hears an ominous sound from the other foot's boards as well but they is holding so far.

Annuk shoots but misses.
Flea misses.

When Mac lands on the ship he tilts it up 15 degrees which causes a commotion on the raiders ship. The only 2 shots that get off are the ballista's. Forward ballista shoots at the Captain and misses, and the other at Mac. The real target is Trellus but Mac completely is covering him. The shot hits Mac but doesn't penetrate his armor. The shooter is a human who looks very confused by this.

Mac also intercepts a lightning bolt headed for Trellus. It comes from the human female. DC 16 reflex save. Don't take any dex bonuses because of stuck leg. 27 points of damage if you fail. 14 if you save.

When Jake hits the deck he is also becomes invisible. Jake has a potion in his hand but hasn't taken it yet. He sees 3 gnolls starting to head in his direction.

Trellus notices 2 gnolls moving towards him.

OOC I am emailing a crude map to you guys. Hope it helps but it is all I have time for right now.

Gry growls menacingly as he sees the gnolls run at him. When the first gnoll enters his 10-ft reach, Gry will take his attack of opportunity and strike with a mighty blow with his shady double axe. (AoO: Power Attack +4, doubles with two-handed weapon to +8 damage. Hit AC 28 crit threat, hit AC 25 crit. 26 points of damage if no crit. If a crit, then 77 damage. If not dead, must make a Fort save DC 15 verses death from massive damage.)

Grymash in grim delight at the sight of spraying crimson, side steps Jake to the right, (5 -ft step) and attacks the next gnoll.
(Power attack +2, two weapon fighting -2. Hit AC 24 and 27. Damage: 20 and 17. Total 37 points of damage.)

Grymash spots the halfling. His eyes grow wide with fury. If his eyes were daggers, the halfling would be hamburger right now.

Jake (AC 21, hp 44/44)  d20+8=9
Saturday April 3rd, 2004 6:20:38 AM

Jake easily lands with an "oomf!" on both feet, and quickly catches his wits.
(I'm pretty sure you meant to say I was also 'visible', too)
Three gnolls. A great fight! he thinks to himself, and looks at the potion in his hand, given to him by Grymash. A thought, unbidden, comes to mind. Maybe I'll turn into a prairie bird, or a giant slug, or maybe even... a woman! He shudders. Who knows...they could have mislabelled the potion, or it could, for all he knew, be a trick by Grymash to get him back... no, he wouldn't do that, a part of him argues, but another part says, besides.. if I take this potion, won't I be fighting them less as a true warrior, and more as a ..well, cheater? I mean, they ain't using potions, are they? Nah... and 'sides. It's only three gnolls! Everything'll be fine!
A firm answer decided in his mind, Jake draws his bastard sword and with a wild cry charges forward, meeting the gnolls head-on, adrenalin surging, blood pumping... (Charge! power attack, -5 to hit, +5 to damage...)
And swinging with all his might, his sword goes a mile wide. (Sigh)
Perhaps it would help to take the potion, he says to himself, and promptly swallows it. (I think that's my move action, right?)

The plain-faced woman is confused for a second, then shakes her head to clear the cobwebs. "The planking must have buckled because of Mac's great weight. I can only imagine what kind of damage he'll do on the pirates."

With the ships getting 60' closer this round, Tishe' gauges the distance as just short of 150'. Excellent.

Her hands and voice raise together, and, as a shuttle through the loom, weaves her creation, a gossamer Web that flies and expands to strike the forward ballista in it's sticky strands!

Mac watches the bolt bounce, and somehow avoids most of the lightnings power. Recalling the original instructions, but stinging from the electric attack, he lifts the Ballista [well within his 15 foot reach, and hopefully less than 3500 lbs] as a move action and hurls it at the source of the lightning bolt, intending it to land upside-down [Attack D20+4(having factored in penalties for size(huge), range(15'-20') and improvised weapon non-proficiency) hits AC14. I leave any Damage or scatter to the GM :) ]

OOC: The gnolls advancing on Trellus are likely to provoke AoOs from Mac... as might the HF when she cast the spell if within 15 feet.

Look's like they landed okay, he thinks to himself.

Watching the other ship, he sees a halfling near it's side. He draws another arrow and fires. (hits AC 11 for 11 pts)

"Surprise!" he yells happily.

Making sure he doesn't open himself up too much for these furry critters, the cleric performs an incantation. A glowing warhammer appears above the rightmost approaching gnoll, and swings at his head.

Grymash takes his AoO on G12 and promptly removes the gnoll's head from his body. It sails so far out to sea, Flea thinks the raider's have a catapult they are shooting at them.
Grymash then steps forward and smashes down G11 with two quick thrusts leaving in a caved in chest and partially removed leg. G11 is dead.

Jake charges forward and is met by G13. Jake misses the gnoll but is in turn struck by the G13 a horrible blow with his battleaxe doing 15 points of damage. G13 seems a little large, faster and meaner than your average gnoll. Jake couldn't take the potion this round. He charged forward and then swung taking all his movement.

Tishe casts her web spell at the forward catapult and also catches G14 in the web and holds him fast.

Mac tries to grab the ballista and use it as a weapon. He is able to break a piece off of it making it unusable but isn't able to lift it. He discovers it is attacked to the ship via swivel.
When Mac tries to pick up the siege equipment he pushes so hard against the deck planks that he thrusts his other leg through the decking effectively pinning both legs. He takes 3 points of damage from splinters and shards.
Mac is trapped until he works his way out. -2 to hit and -2 on ac. reach is reduced by 5'

He does throw the piece off the ballista that he broke off at the human female but it misses her.

Gilan stands and watches the battle in frustration. He is distracted by the Captain when he comes over and asks, "What do you want me to do? They aren't trying to grapple and we are going to miss them. Do you want me to try and grapple?"

Flea take a shot and does a minor wound to the female wizard.

Anuk shoots at the halfling he sees briefly but misses badly.

Trellus is able to cast his spell and sets himself for the three gnolls that rush him. G5 G6 and G9.

Sterlin does find the boat and is now beneath it easily keeping pace. How is he going to get up?

The opposition.

The female magicuser casts a spell that has no apparant effect until several around her start moving very quickly.

The HM G4 and G3 close and draw attacks of opportunity from Mac. All he has to use are his mighty horns but he uses them to great effect. He misses the human but the gnolls pay a huge price for their quick charge. One dies on the horn G4 and G3 takes a huge gash.

The human fighter magically quickened is a blur of speed and skill. With three quick slashes of his falchion he does 32 points of damage to Mac. One gnoll follows up and delivers another blow for 4 points of damage. Combined with the 3 points of early ship splinter damage Mac is unconcious at -5 hps.

Trellus is attacked 3 times and hit once with a solid shot for 8 points of damage.

Grymash loses sight of the halfling during his battle and when he tries to locate him again he can't see him anywhere.

He is also flanked by G8 G10 and G 7 but all three miss him.

Jake and Grymash see that G15 G19 and G20 are closing and will be able to attack next round.

Didn't mention it but the GR's are gnolls in the rigging.

"Treadlelickin' spitswallowin'-Gry! We're a bit outclassed here!" Jake admits, somewhat saddened. So many gnolls...and a spellcaster, and that guy with the sword... This is one fight that's not looking too great. He drops the potion to the floor, hoping it doesn't crack, but really, can't take the time to drink it while in battle. "We gotta slow the boat somehow!"
Wielding Lavantessen with both hands, Jake hacks into the nearest gnoll as best he can with all his strength. (Power attack, hit AC 22, did 20 damage)

Trapped as she is on the GrassSwift, she is limited to what she knows. And she knows one thing.

"The gnolls are only sailors! The humans are the dangerous ones! Get them!!"

Grymash sees 3 more gnolls moving forward and quickly spins and attacks G15 with AoO with a massive blow. Unfortunately he cut a little low and missed the neck, but not the chest and smashes his axe right through the gnolls neck.

Grymash in a whirl of blades spins to face G10, G8 and G7. He easily cuts down G10 and G8 in a fury of blows, blood and severed limbs.

Gilan dives off the ship and buzzes over to the Raider's ship. He will be there next turn.

His 2 wasp friends move to join him.

Jake cuts deep and hard at his gnoll adversary but the gnoll takes the hit and keeps coming.

Tishe sends webs landing on the human female but she made her saving throw and seems to move out of the web farther back this round towards the pole holding gnolls.

Trellus sends his hammer after the female this round, but can't swing with it. Hammer has to move to opponent.

Sterlin casts his web spell and the grass tries to catch the ship but seem unable to grab the druid wood.

Flea shoots and misses.

The opponents:

The human female moves out of the web and pulls out a wand this round.

The human male buzzes right by Trellus drawing an AoO to engage Grymash. Trellus hits and does 4 points of damage to him. He hits Grymash once for 12 points of damage. 3 gnolls engage Grymash but all of them miss. Suddenly the little halfling makes an appearance around 20' away from Grymash and launches two arrows at the giant 1/2 orc. Both strike true and do devastating damage 28 total points. The halfling smirks and says, "See told you to stay home!"

The big gnoll seems to get angry at the savage hit it took and launches a huge counter swing at Jake and just misses his head by an inch.

Trellus is besieged by swinging axes but all miss.

Mac continues to bleed out. -6 hps

Anuk remains quiet this round

He does a measured attack on the gnoll in front of him, rather than usual heavy swings, attempting accuracy over deadliness. (AC 25, does 11 damage)

If the gnoll goes down, then he heads over to Mac, provided there's no other opponents in the way. If not, he spits in the gnoll's face and yells, "Fall, trash!!!"

[Casting defensively, made Concentration check 21 vs DC 17 to avoid AoO.
Cast HOLD PERSON on the magic user. Will DC 16]

He lets the hammer swing at her again for good measure.

Ezra follows behind Sterlin as they trek through the grass. Sterlin keeps looking up toward the sky. The spider becomes curious and gazes up though the green and amber filtered light from the sun (spot 24). She wonders what the big black floating shadows that block out the sun are?! The two blackened shapes seem to be moving. A little unnerved by the dark spectacle and the shouts and shrills of the 'flesh bags' from above, she decides to hang even closer to Sterlin.

Sorry Trellus, missed the blinding part. My apologies.

The blinding light goes off and the gnolls rear back in shock and alarm. They are all blinded by this attack and though they attacked you last round, did so blindly and missed even worse than I first thought.

Because they are blind, you can cast your hold person spell without attacking an AoO from the gnolls but I believe you are doing it wrong. You cast the spell, drawing the AoO and then make the concentration attempts if you are damaged not to have your spell disrupted. You can't avoid taking an AoO by concentrating harder.

Gilan continues his buzz to the enemy ship, his two flankers following along with his every move. He would smile if a wasp could smile as he pulls up on the ship.

He buzzes right up to Mac and lands heavily on the deck as he changes back into his normal form. He uses the slumped large form of Mac to try and hide himself from the others till he can show his hand.

The GrassSwift swings over and starts an intercept course with the raider's ship. It is running right towards it and might ram next round.

Gilan is able to land by Mac without any problems. There are 4 gnolls but they are all stumbling around blind.

Trellus is only around 10' away from his friend Mac. He casts his spell at the mage. His hammer tries to thump her but misses. OOC (sorry about the confusion. Didn't realize you had combat casting. Yes you were right and could cast spells while avoiding the AoO's. Good thing they all missed you anyway! Reread the spriitual weapons spell and you are right again. I will apply the damage to her from the last round.)

Tishe masters her scroll and strikes a bolt at the female mage and the gnoll next to her. Both make the saving throw but neither is happy.

Jake slashes into his gnoll G13 but the tough monster won't go down.

Grymash launches a flurry of attacks at the carving up the body of the figher he is facing. He almost comes out of his rage when he sees the fighter still standing.

Anuk adds to the mage's woes with a skillful arrow shot.

Sterlin stares up at the ship in frustration.

Flea shoots at G3 killing him off.

The bad guys:

The female mage looks like she is ready to use her wand but then thinks better of it. She shakes off the hold person spell barely and this shakes her confidence even more. She is suddenly gone from sight.

The fighter isn't happy either, he spits out some blood and winces as he says, "Good ones"
He then attacks Grymash hitting Grymash twice and doing 26 points of damage and reducing him to 1 hp.

The gnoll G7 takes a half hearted swing at the big 1/2 orc but misses.

The gnoll G13 swings hard and true and thumps Jake for 10 points of damage.

G19 slashes at Jake as well but misses.

G20 swings at Grymash but misses too.

G16 has climbed out of the rigging and moves to Jake and swings but misses.

Trellus sees G18 and G19 out of the rigging and moving towards him and Mac

The halfling has gone missing again...not a good thing.

G1 and G2 leave their posts and start advancing on Gilan.

The raider's boat now has no one guiding it but seems steady on its course

(Power attack -2, hit crit range 18, I don't know if that's a critical, but if it isn't, then I did 1d10+6(str*1.5)+2 or 9 damage, if it did then I did 2d10+12+2, or 25 damage to the gnoll)
But now he's got another opponent...Still, this one appears to be a regular gnoll. He'll finish him off next round and save that minotaur. (If he's alive...Jake doesn't know healing.)

The rogue tries to judge the distance between the two vessels in order to determine if she might use the rigging or cables to swing from the merchant barge to the enemy ship.

The small woman smiles grimly as her spell strikes the enemy mage, even as the scroll crackles and is gone from her hands.

"Disappeared, hmm? We'll see where your thread lies when we get alongside, my little beater."

Tishe' takes another look at the distance between the two ships (Sailing: 13), and realizes a collision is imminent.

"Grab ahold of something, Bloodpack, it's going to get bumpy!" She takes her own advice and lays down, grabbing the railing.

Grymash is shuttered by the damage he has taken. His survival instincts bred into him all start to buzz. His life hangs by a single solitary thread. The adrenaline rush of rage is all that is keeping him from dying at the moment. The sobering thoughts of his own mortality almost drops him from the rage that's keeping him alive. Its a struggle to maintain it (Will save 22). Thoughts of killing the halfling is enough to fuel is anger.

Grymash spots his friend Trellus. His friend can help him. He only needs to get to him first. So Gry withdraws from combat with the human and the gnolls by flying straight up 10 feet out of reach. He spends the rest of his movement to move toward Trellus. (Withdraw action, page 143. Full round action. Gry can move from his threatened square without drawing attacks of opportunity. Can move double movement, for Gry that is 120ft.)

Grymash bleeding body floats down behind Trellus. By the looks of his wounds, Grymash should be dead or dying. Gry's tone is most urgent as his bloody words spit at Trellus, "Grrry NEEED healll!! Gry feel spirits leavin'!! DO ITT FAST!" His breathing is labored and gurgles with fluid.

(If Gry falls out of Rage, he drops to -9 hitpoints. If he takes one more point of damage, raging or not, he falls dead! Gry performs no other actions. He cant cast spells when raged.)

Then he grabs the nearby railing, looks down at Twinge and yells "Better hang on!!"

Twinge moves quickly and wraps himself around Anuk's leg.

Jake launches another solid attack into his gnoll opponent. He hits him once again and staggers him but is chagrined to see the monster still standing..wounded, bleeding, but still fighting. Does a glimmer of respect start in Jake at the hardy foe?

Flea shoots a shot and strikes G7 who was about to cut down Grymash, killing him

Tishe lays down and holds on....wise move.

Grymash staggers away from the fight and the Captain of the raider's ship is happy to let him go. He doesn't pursue.

Trellus sends his hammer against the Captain, though Jake might have liked it more as he is fighting someone, and hits the man.

Anuk shoots at the Captain, who is beginning to wonder why he got up this morning and staggers him with an arrow shot.

Gilan sends his healing magic into Mac bringing him back up to 10 hitpoints.

The bad guys:

G1 and G2 both engage Gilan but miss

G18 and G19 hack away at Trellus to no avail

G20 takes both an AoO and follows and attacks Grymash but can't connect.

G16 attacks Jake but misses.

The gnoll leader decides to try to put Jake down and does a slight power attack. He hits and is lucky with his blow doing maximum damage of 16. Jake is down to 3 hitpoints.

The Captain is happy to drink down a potion which melts some of his wounds away. Then the Captain disappears.

Grymash facing the right way, sees the halfling step forward and shoot at his benefacter Trellus twice. He only hits once for 16 points of damage.

Suddenly the two ships are upon each other and crash into each other hard. Tearing sounds can be heard as the wood splinters and the ship jar to a stop. Everyone make a dex check to stay on your feet. Tishe is exempt from this. If you fall take 5 points of damage. Mac automatically takes the damage as the jagged edges of the hole he is in rips into him again.

This time it's a measured poke, because though he's tempted to put all his strength behind the swing, the skinny half-elf just knows he'll miss. Fate's like that.
Perhaps it's because he does make such an even blow that he's startled to see his blow miss entirely. It's pathetic, really.

The ships crash, wood splinters, masts sway and sails threaten to tear. Tishe's view is of the pirate ship getting impossibly large and then smacking up and down on the deck. Thankfully, it's only rattling and no permenant hurts.

Not being thrown from her feet, she is quickly up and scanning the pirate vessel. "Great! First the wizard and now the man who nearly took down Mac and Grymash together has disappeared! And we have to account for everyone or Rattledam is in danger."

She listens for the man in armor (Listen: 15 [only +1 oops]) but in the confusion of battle isn't certain where invisible folks may be.

The small woman raises her hands and weaves a spell which ends in a golden Celestial Badger arriving on the pirate ship. "Find and attack the invisible enemy!" she commands in Celestial. (augment conjuring +4 Str, +4 Con to badger)

The scent of blood is quite pungent from above. She raps Sterlin across the shoulders, with her front legs, sensing something is wrong. Her friend hasnt moved and remains silent for some reason. She looks around wondering what to do. She's completely clueless.

She attaches a strand of sticky webbing from her spinnerets and darts up the grass, trailing a silvery cord in her path. When she gets to the top, Ezra witnesses the ships collide. The sudden impact makes her crouch down in shock.

Gilan nods at Mac's words though he cannot see Gilan, since he is behind Mac. He has another idea though for right now, instead of digging for a potion (dex 12).

He lays his hands on Mac again as he calls upon the powers of nature to help him out. "Mother Wold answer my need." He channels more healing powers into Mac, trying to keep the big guy up and running (concentration 3).

OR IF THE DEX ROLL IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH

Gilan feels the ship rock under his feet and he finds himself pitching with it. Knowing that he is not going to be able to maintain his footing he tries to roll with the shock and away from the gnolls (dex 8). Flea makes her save and is able to board the raider's ship easily up near the bow.

Grymash, flying, watches the halfling go flying on to the deck with a grunt. Grymash then gives him a horrible wound. Doesn't look like the halfling is gonna get up soon if ever.

Jake sees his both his enemies fall to their knees in front of him and the gnoll looks at the edge of death. Blood streams from several wounds and he now has a nasty bump rising on his head from the last fall. Jake misses unfortunately and the battle continues.

Mac launchs a vicious assault and chops off G6's leg instantly killing him and splattering blood everywhere. G5 and G9 come out of the blind spell. G5 falls to the deck and can't do anything but scramble back up this round. G9 retains his footing easily (nat 20) and swings a blow at Mac. He sinks his battleaxe into the deck a foot in front of Mac (nat 1) and starts tugging at it.

Tishe summons her bear

Trellus falls and sends his hammer at G13. The blow is effective because the gnoll was on his knees. The hardy foe collapses to the deck and moves no more. G18 who was lining up to swing at Trellus falls to his face. He starts to scramble back to his feet.

Annuk falls, scrambles back to his feet and grabs his weapons.

Gilan falls as does one of his opponents G1. G2 stays on his feet but can't connect with Gilan as he slides across the deck.

Grymash smiles grimly with satisfaction at the sight of the fallen halfling. He barks in celebration. However his teeth continue to nash and grind together with rage. Grymash cant help but notice all the blood. The deck is awash with it. Such pretty blood! So beautiful and red. As he floats down to it, he draws a dagger and sends it flying at the gnoll trying to attack Trellus (G18). (Thrown dagger. Hit AC 27 crit threat, Hit AC 21 crit. Does 23 points of damage.) However its not too distracting to keep him from killing gnolls.

Grymash lands on deck, straddling the halflings body. He kicks away the rogue's weapon. Even with all the blood, Grymash can pick up the scent of human meat in the air. He growls menacingly and scans the area for the slightest hint of them. He looks for anything that might give themselves away: the gentle touch of the breeze against the hairs on his arm (Will 14); listening for clattering armor or the grating sound of a sword being pulled from its scabbard (Listen 16); footfalls against the deck or sudden footsteps in the blood (Survival 16). The stalker instincts in Gry come alive. The rage within him consuming little bits of his soul with every passing moment. So much so his arms tremble with anticipation of more carnage waged by his double axe.

If Gry notices anything within his 10-ft threaten area, he will take his attack of opportunity and swing his axe through the air in that direction. Seeing Jake is ripped pretty bad as well, he goes for option 2, and moves over to help the fighter [Double move, 40'].

As he makes his way over there, he stows his mace and pulls a wand.

He also yells, "Tishe, can you do something about the invisible dudes?"

Gilan shakes off the effects of slamming into the railing and looks around at all the carnage. The distance between him and the gnolls is considerable and he shakes his head once more to clear his head more.

With one hand outstretched he once again reaches for the very power of The Plains. He can feel them wrap themselves into the very thought that he makes. With a last look to the final gnoll by Mac he smiles as two dire badgers take form on each side of the gnoll. "The dog man my friends and then to me." He glances around to see how the others are doing and is happy to see them all alive, if not standing.

The dire badgers now flanking the gnoll growl and snap at him with powerful jaws. Dire badger1 brings his claws ripping in at the gnoll (hit: 9/26(crit 8), damage: 6/3(crit 5)) and then it's teeth snap shut (hit: 14, damage: 4). Dire badger2 tears in with it's own claws on the backside of the gnoll (hit: 25/22, damage: 3/5), then finishes the attack off with it's own teeth (hit: 3, damage: 7).

Flea(AC 19, HP 35)  (attack)d20+5=19 d6=1 (MS)d20+12=18
Sunday April 11th, 2004 12:16:24 PM

Landing softly (Move Silently=18) on deck in the bow of the enemy ship, Flea takes up her newly acquired hooked hammer. "You dog-faced piece of orc refuse!" she calls, as she makes a swipe at the creature in front of her (G20?) (Hit AC 19, for 1dmg).

Tishe' (AC 20, HP 25, Mage Armor: 4 hours, Shield: 34 rounds)  d20+2=12
Sunday April 11th, 2004 6:14:43 PM

Tishe' ignores the sounds of battle and concentrates on finding the invisible mage and fighter. She Listens (12) for the scuff of feet on the deck and the jingling of metal. She watches her Celestial Badger sniff for the foe, and watches Grymash and the other Bloodpack and sailors for hints of where the invisible foes may be.

If she has a location, she will again weave words and hands into a spell of Glitterdust, blinding all within a ten foot radius of the designated location, and covering them with golden, glittering dust motes.

If she isn't given a location by the badger, herself, or the others, she grinds her teeth in frustration, but will delay her actions awaiting some sign.

Monday April 5th, 2004 2:51:07 PM> Mac takes a quick look at his sunken leg, trying to quickly guage the simplest means out of the hole. [Spot check = 23]

Now> "Thanks again Gilan." Mac falls silent as he considers his position again. "Gawk", he chastises himself in thought, "You can fly ya daft idiot!" Mac drifts to the vertical and drags himself out of the deck and just into the air, and assesses the scene for viable opponents and waiting for the gnoll to fall down or draw his axe from the deck.

Once clear AC: 20, Reach 15', 5 potential AoOs per round.

Bow in hand, Anuk nocks another arrow while moving quickly to the other ship, Twinge trailing slightly behind. He watches from a distance as Tishe' casts her spell and scans the affected area intently (spot 25). "Nice pick, Tishe'!" he calls out as he looks for the invisible raiders in the dust.

If he sees movement in the swirls of color, he aims and fires.

(Hits AC 26 for 11 pts. Assuming I'm within 30 ft at this point, so Point Blank Shot and my bracers of archery have kicked in. Ignore the d20+4 roll, forgot to change it to d8 for damage.)

Grymash kills G18 with a thrown dagger. He in his enraged state seems to get lost in the blood for awhile and doesn't see any invisible people. He ends up straddling the poor little halfling (the halfling was abused as a child) looking around for more opponents. For some strange reason none of the gnolls get to close to him, but an unknown badger ambles within range. Make an intelligence check or you attack the badger in your rage. DC 12

Trellus heads over towards Jake drawing an AoO from G16 who fell on the deck last round. (My gnolls can't hit a naked sleeping crippled old man) G16 misses his AoO.

Flea heads over to G20 and bonks him on the head. Do to some previous arrow wounds she is able to take him down.

Gilan draws an AoO from both G1 and G2. Both miss and then each falls prey to a dire badger and they are soon visiting their god explaining their poor performance in the last battle.

Mac smacks himself on the horn and starts to fly out of his predicament. He draws an AoO from G9 who also misses horribly.

Annuk doesn't see any thing invisible so he takes a shot at the gnoll who swung at Mac putting him down.

Jake is exhausted and barely standing. He can't seem to raise his weapons in time as G16 chops down with his battleaxe doing 7 points of damage. Jake's world goes black and he slumps to the deck in defeat. -4 hps.

Suddenly you hear one of the crew from the GrassSwift scream, "Captain NOOOO!" When you look over, you are horrified to see the Captain of the raider's ship standing over your Captain's body. Two huge bleeding rents are in the Captain's back. The evil human just grins and then jumps over the far side rail to the grasses below.

The only gnoll still standing is G16 over Jakes body. Female human still missing.

Keeping himself, and his shield, between G16 and Jake, Trellus taps his friend with the wand.

[Cure Serious Wounds - 21 hp healed]

The cleric isn't overly concerned about the gnoll, because...

"Gry! Over here!"

...it's life expectancy just got very, very short.

Trellus wonders if the Captain will still be alive by the time he gets there.

And one other thing...

"Gilan! Where is that compass pointing now?"

Anuk (AC 21, HP 34)  d20+10=24
Monday April 12th, 2004 6:02:20 PM

Moving quickly, Anuk focuses on the spot where the raider captain dropped into the grasses and mutters a brief incantation, casting entangle.

As the tendrils twist and writhe into place, Anuk moves to the wall of knotted grass, hoping he has stopped the captain before he could get away. If he makes it to the area by the end of the round he looks down to see who or what might be caught. (spot 24)

Gilan (HP: 38/43, AC: 18)
Monday April 12th, 2004 6:17:46 PM

Gilan continues to sit on the deck of the ship. With a grunt he looks to the two dire badgers and nods his head. "Thanks you my friends." He pats each on the head as they nuzzle him to make sure he is ok. With a wave of his hand he sends them off. "See if you can sniff out the hidden one." He sends the badgers off to use thier noses to find a wizard. He smiles at Mac and waves to his flying form. "Don't mention it." It is funny but he had figured that putting himself in direct harms way was over, but here he is doing just that.

With a nod of his head upon hearing Trellus he pulls out the orb from his pouch and lightly holds it in his hand.

Grymash prepares to swing at the badger again when Trellus calls for him. His perplexed, wide-eyed stare quickly whips around to Trellus' position. His confused expression rapidly changes to a snarling, grimacing snear! Grymash charges at the gnoll spitting and growling the whole way. The spider watches on curiously. She spots Flea on the boat and recognizes her (Intelligence 10). Ezra recalls that Flea would make a tasty meal, but that would make Sterlin mad if she tried to take a bite. But now Sterlin seems to be in trouble. Must've been biten or something. So Ezra does the only thing she knows what to do. The same thing she would do with meal ... drag it back to the nest. This time the nest is where Flea is standing. Ezra begins to pull Sterlin with her webbing. (Strength check 10. Her max weight she can drag is 400 pounds)

As hard as she can, Tishe' can't seem to find anyone invisible. "I need to weave a different spell mix," she says to herself, "or they aren't invisible on the deck anymore. Hmmm..."

"My badger friend!", the plain-looking woman calls, and she looks up to see Grymash mash her badger out of existance. "Ewww."

(If by some chance Gry didn't make roadkill out of the badger, Tishe' calls "Sniff out the rooms inside the ship for anything invisible and attack it!")

And then the screaming for the GrassSwift's captain begins. Whirring around, the small conjurer can only watch amazed as the pirate flicks blood from his blades and dissappears into the grass over the side.

Knowing nothing of healing, she runs to the railing only to see the grass play in the wind and Anuk casting his spell to create a entangled mass.

Vainly searching (Search: 21) for some sign, she shakes her head. "That man is slipperier than a greased prarie piggie! I doubt you got him, Anuk, though it was a good try."

"Unfortunately, what this means is we have to track all the beaters down to ensure Rattledam is safe. The fighter, the wizard, the merchant boat, and all with a wounded captain and damaged ship.

Trellus rushes over and cures Jake drawing an AoO from the gnoll. Of course he missed but the blow came close this time giving Trellus a quick fright.

Annuk rushes over to the side of the ship and casts his spell. When he looks over to see if he was successful, he sees that he wasn't but notices the grasses moving farther away from the ship.

Gilan orders his new friend to try to find the mage and they go off sniffing around the ship.

Grymash with joy in his heart, cuts down the last gnoll without missing a beat.

Flea is startled when she shes a big spider carrying Sterlin who is squirming and yelling "No no but me down....I said put me down up the side of the ship."

Tishe is frustrated that she can't find the mage. She also sees the grasses moving erratically moving away from the ship.

Mac sees the human fighter moving away from the ship. He doesn't seem to be moving as fast as he was before but he does see Mac and he yells, "Trina, use your lightning wand on that huge thing now!"

OOC misplaced G5.

Suddenly Tishe's badger is attacked by the G5 who was playing dead. He then panicks and jumps head first off the ship yelling "No more giants!" Your hear a definite thud as he hits the ground.

The badger sniffs and then proceeds to keep looking for invisible people.

Jake is cured and starts to lift his head up and look around. He asks Trellus, "Were you telling me to go into the light?"

The first mate makes his way over to the Flea with a shocked and sick look on his face. He says in a sad voice, tears filling his eyes, "The Captain is dead and so is the second mate. What are we supposed to do now?"

Glancing to his wasps he smiles. "Thanks for the concern my friends...there will be sweetwater for you when we camp." He is saddened by the sudden announcement of the Captain and Firstmates deaths. He is not sure but they may need to return to town...mission unfinished.

The rogue is totally disconcerted by the appearance of a large spider on deck beside her. She never did like Sterlin's 'pet', although the druid himself was okay.

Seeing that Jake would soon be on the mend with Trellus' help, and that the beaters in the grass wouldn't stand a chance with Gry and Mac on their tail and Tishe' weaving spells from on board the merchant barge....the barge!

A first mate's call for help breaks through Flea's reverie. The captian and second mate are down! Flea tries to judge the distance between the boats, hoping they haven't drifted too far apart after crashing together, and takes a running jump to gain the merchant barge.

(OOC: Since Flea's speed is 20ft, there is a -6 penalty, so Jump=13-6=7. Flea lands on her feet if the distance between the boats is 7 feet or less. 7-12 feet she makes it, but is prone. 13-17 feet apart, Reflex save=21, made, to grab side of boat and hang on. Hope I did this right.)

Wednesday April 14th, 2004 10:57:24 AM

Anuk carefully notes the direction and speed of the wake created in the grass as the raider captain moves away. (knowledge plains 23, survival 20 -- not sure which skill would be most applicable here so I rolled both).

He turns to the first mate, intending to ask if there is a skiff or other means available with which they might give chase. However, he hesitates when he sees that the man is distraught and in mourning. He knows what it means to lose someone close.

The feeling of the urgency rises as the raider gets farther away, though, and Anuk suddenly blurts out "Control yourself, man! They died defending our home as any of us would, but the task isn't over. We have to chase down the white-handed beaters who escaped and we have to do it now!! Do we have a skiff on board? A raft? Anything?!" (Diplomacy 1. Figures *sigh*.)

DM George
Wednesday April 14th, 2004 2:58:37 PM

Mac swoops down and literaly cleaves the raider Captain in half. Blood and gore splatter everywhere as the Captain falls into two pieces.

Grymash flies up to back him up but by the time he gets there, Mac has already decisively settled the problem. He sees no sign of the female mage.

Upon examining the ship you will see that they are locked together from the impact and both ships are damaged. The raiders ship seems to take the worst of it as it wasn't being steered at the time but both will need extensive repairs. If you were on water now, both ships would be taking on water.

Because to the ships being locked together, Flea has no problem jumping from one ship to the other.

The compass points at the raider's ship as that is what it was set up to do.
The crew of the Grass Swift is dazed and demoralized. They have lost their Captain and the second mate, not to mention 4 other crewmember died from arrow shots while almost everyone is nicked up and damaged from the battle.

The sailor is shocked and dismayed at Anuk's treatment of him..."No sir...we don't have a raft. Sorry..." he then hurries away.

The first mate comes out of his misery and starts issuing orders. "We need to get these ships seperated. We can't steer like this. What do you think we should do with the raider's ship and the bodies?"

Trellus  d20+3=21
Wednesday April 14th, 2004 3:45:09 PM

Trellus checks the Grass Swift's captain. He's definitely dead. They should probably do something for him, but there's no time.

"Mac! Do whatever this dude (pointing to first mate) tells you and get these ships apart. Gry can help when his thread gets straight.

Everybody else, get on that raider and find what you can. And hurry. This much blood will draw every Rapke for miles."

The cleric turns to the first mate. He is calm, but unflinching.
"We need to go after that other ship," he explains. "They know where Rattledam is. Unless we stop them, they're gonna tell the Baron. And then every raider in the Grass is gonna go burn Rattledam down."

He waits a couple beats for that to sink in.

"I will not let that happen," the young man continues implacably.

"I know your Captain and your friends are dead. I know you're ripped up. And I'm sorry. But we have to stop that other ship."

Tishe' continues to scan the grasses where the fighter was for movement (Spot 10) and thinks aloud.

"The pirate was invisible on the ship, but visible in the grass for Mac to attack. He was also talking to the wizard. Perhaps the wizard was concealing him in her spell. Which means that she is close to where the pirate was. Which means if there is no movement, she is still there. Which means..."

Tishe' takes a chance and weaves her fingers and voice into a spell. Golden, glittery dust appears and swirls in a ten foot radius of where the pirate captain was in the grasses. The sparkling specks stick to invisible beings and blinds any creature within.

Ezra gets Sterlin back to the boats. She bites the webbing free from Sterlin and taps him all over to check if all of Sterlin's parts are working. Its good to hear his voice again, she thinks.

Out of the corner of her compound eye she spots another barge in the distance. She doesnt know what it is. It doesnt concern her too much. (Spot 11)
-----------------------------------
(Player ooc observation on logistics: the barges are only traveling at a max of 30ft a round (2mph). The battleship is faster at 40ft a round (4mph). The other barge that is trying to get away should still be in plain sight. Maybe even in ballista or bow range. Am I correct George. Example: for 15 rounds @ 30ft per round, that's only 450 feet [150 yards]!! They're sitting ducks! Gry & Anuk can shoot their composite bows to 480ft at a -6 penalty to their attack roll.)

Anuk
Thursday April 15th, 2004 1:12:24 PM

Anuk's anxiety subsides a bit as he realizes the sailor is already aware of the danger they are in. Shaking his head in frustration at himself he concentrates on helping wherever he can to get the ships separated.

When Flea talks about towing the other ship he responds, "I like the idea. I've got some more rope, too if it'll help. 'Course, there's probably enough rope between these two ships to get the job done. Once we get that other ship stopped we can figure out how to tow whatever we need to."

Combat is over and normal minute rounds will commence again.

Mac is able to land on the ship carrying his gruesome prize. (ooc I did get you private post thanks)

Tishe casts her spell but catches no one in its dust.

Grymash screams his warnings and threats to the empty grasses but only receives silence for his troubles. This doesn't help his mood.

Gilan starts looting bodies and looking around the ship. He notices a strange cargo in the hold. It is druid wood! He finds 10 planks of it.

Annuk and Flea galvanize the crew to start getting the ships seperated. The first mate warns that it will be very difficult to steer both ships and towing the larger warship will slow them down. They might never catch their quarry if they try it. He does suggest that he stays on board with 2 crewmembers and put the others including the wounded on the raiders ship. Those crewmembers can sail the ship back to Rattledam and the Grass Swift can go on and pursue the other ship with some of the pack helping out with the sails.

When Jake jumps to the Grass Swift, he lands on something squishy, stumbles and falls to the deck. He hears a soft groan from underneath him.

Mac
Thursday April 15th, 2004 9:12:57 PM

The taur sets about pulling out the easier grapples, and cutting through the rest of the ropes. He's well underway when an unexpected idea pops into his bovine skull.

"Flea? Can ye tether me up a two-shouldered harness from your rope? Why cannae I just fly out an' pull this boat up to speed?"

[Conjecture: Given that the wood of the boat is held aloft by the Grass, and that Mac in his currently (sorry, the radio is currently playing "Ride of the Valkyries") magically augmented state can drag up to 36,000 lb, can he at least try to improve the ship's speed?]

Flea  d20+4=19
Friday April 16th, 2004 12:19:33 AM

Flea nods when the first mate suggests sending part of the crew back to Rattledam on the captured enemy ship. "Tell 'em its the work of the Bloodpack, she says.

When Mac makes his suggestion, Flea answers "Wow! Can ya do that?" She manipulates the rope and creates a knot that can be easily released, if need be. "Put this over your shoulder and across your body, Mac. I'll tie the other end to the front of this barge."

Gilan (HP: 38/43, AC: 18)
Friday April 16th, 2004 12:52:44 AM

Gilan comes back up with a smile on his face. If one of the planks is small enogh he brings one along with him. "Hey...found some druidwood." He points back to where he just came from with his thumb. "Another nine planks down there." He will then make his way back to their ship before they get separated.

He will drop whatever loot he was able to find on the deck of the ship, having put most of it in a sack.

Grymash becomes frustrated from the lack of a response from the evil mage. He spins round toward the horizon where the other barge is trying to get away. Gry aims high and lets the arrow fly. He hopes to pick off any humanoid figure that can be seen on the distant craft. (TrueStrike. Hit AC 48 natural 20, crit threat. Hit AC 44 crit. 30 points of damage. Hee hee hee!! -2 to attack roll for every 120 feet past the weapons range. Gry can still crit on a target of AC 20, 1,560 ft (520 yards) away. Dice gods be good to Gry :)

Grymash returns to his pack and helps Mac pull the ships apart. He tries to take advantage of his ability to fly and his extra strength from being enlarged while it lasts. He gathers his weapons that are scattered around. Even the dagger that's embedded in the gnoll's skull.

Grymash hears the suggestion of the First Mate of the Grass Swift crew (Wisdom check 17). "There 'bout ta be no wounded!" He presents his Feel Good Stick (Cure Light Wounds wand) to the sailor. "Gry thinks we need both boats. Da big boat has uh workin' big bolt chucker (balista) an it be faster. Weez can take both boats to da baron piggies and flanks them on both sides. We chuck arrows and big bolts at thems. Wipe thems out quick!! Take der barge and weez go back ta Rattledam wit all, uh ... one, twos, threez ... THREEz boats. Der could be other raider boats out there too! Not safe. Best weez stay together. Gry not think Blood Pack knows how ta sail back da raider barge. Weez need ya crew for dat."

Grymash looks around for those who need healing. He motions to Trellus for help. When all that is done, he will perform a short Last Rites ceremony for the crew members who died in battle. Assuring the crew that their fallen friends are together in paradise.

Before any of that begins, Grymash looks at the Jake, who had just fallen on his face. "Jake, why yous always fallin'? Is Jake ok?" (Listen 13. Tell me how many points need to be healed for the Crew. It takes 5 charges from the wand to get Gry up to full hitpoints.)

Tishe' is disappointed her hunch didn't pan out, and turns to observe the mess of the two ships as Grymash returns to land. Her assessment (Sailing: 13) is not much, but she knows there is no time to get in the way of the experts.

"Look, Bloodpack, you wouldn't have Galafar tell you how to fight, don't tell these sailors how to sail. I know a pick or two about sailing, and using two ships to pursue won't work. We don't have enough expertise to man two ships." The small woman has to crane her head up to eye everybody but Flea, but she looks all business.

Tishe' pulls her wavy brown hair and ties it in a tail down her back. "The second mate is right. With the deaths in the crew, there is just enough to put a prize crew on the pirate and use the GrassSwift to go after the other barge."

She pats Grymash on the arm and gives him a smile. "Healing thier wounded is a kind thing to do as well as smart. That gives us minimal people needed for the prize crew to take the pirate back to Rattledam."

"Mac, Flea, go ahead and try the flying to help our movement, and rig Grymash up, too. We need all the advantage we can get."

"While we're getting the ships separated, let's get a lookout up the mast to keep an eye on the other ship and see if we can't revive the halfling for some infomation."

She nods, satisfied she's had her say, and the small woman begins stripping down to just pants and a halter. Her muffled voice comes through her tunic at the second mate. "So, Captain, what's the best way we can help you to get your ship after that barge?"

"I don't know if it will work, Flea, but it's got to be worth a try... That or..." Mac watches Gry's arrow arc over towards the ship. "Nice shot! Nah, Gry an' I are probably better off here than heading off after the other ship."

He is brought to a stop by the pain in his chest and abdomen. Charging after the fighter might have been foolish - the strain could have split the fresh scores on his chest. He draws one CLW Potion from his backpack and drains it [7 points, HP:19/44] and waits for the critically injured to be tended to before seeking any nor healing.

Trellus looks around in exasperation as both Grymash and Tishe' start belting out the exact opposite orders.
Too many weavers on the loom again, he thinks. If only he hadn't split them up on the attack.

"Warp down, dudes," he says placatingly. "Let's weave the First's pattern."

He nods at the new captian of the Grass Swift.
"OK, you get your dudes going, and I'll work on mine."

Trellus gets out a wand of Cure Moderate Wounds, healing himself and Jake while Grymash deals with the others.

That also gives the cleric the opportunity to see what Jake has stepped on. The image of an invisible mage keeps popping into his head, and he looks with an anticipatory grin.

Friday April 16th, 2004 11:55:23 AM

"Shady!" says Anuk when he hears Mac's plan. "This oughta help us catch the treadles."

As he helps Flea secure the improvised harness he says to Mac, "We're gonna need to make sure you're protected up there, otherwise you'll be the first thing they shoot at. I think there's still a spell in my magic stone that'll help. Probably best to wait until we're closer to 'em, though, to cast it."

Friday April 16th, 2004 4:18:13 PM

The crew starts yelling and waving when Mac tries to land on the ship. "No! Don't land! What are trying to do, destroy the ship? Your too heavy."

The crew struggles to unhook the ships from each other. No grapples were thrown, but the raider's ship rammed the Grass Swift and has its bow stuck in the starbard side of the Grass Swift.

Crewmembers and pack members are cured alike with many a thank you. Figure you use 5 charges on the crewmembers for cures to get them healthy.

Grymash starts saying last rites over many off the dead.

A harness starts to be made but Mac starts to sink to the ground before he can get into it.
Soon after, he starts to shrink to normal size again. He stands looking up at the ship.

Jake starts feeling around with his hands and feels soft silky hair. His hands wander a little more and suddenly jerk back as he touches something round and soft. Another soft groan can be heard but not seen.

Trellus will take a look and see the mage sprawled on the deck of the Grass Swift. He realizes she must have fallen when the ships collided. Soon after the invisiblity fades and the female can be seen by all. She is still knocked silly but very much alive.

Finally after much work and sweat the two ships are seperated. The process took 10 minutes to complete so please adjust your spells.

The other ship is only a dot on the horizen.

When Tishe' starts bossing the pack around, Flea jumps up and down with glee. Collecting her bow and applying herself to whatever needs to be done, she calls to the small woman, "You know a thing or two about ships and sailing, eh?" Before she has time to hear the response, Flea notices a deflating Mac. Running to the edge of the boat, she fastens her rope (Use Rope=21) and tosses it over the side so that it hangs down 50ft. "Can you reach the rope?" she asks the taur, then adds, "use it to climb up."*

Mac, as he is looking up at the ship pauses to consider how far above the plain the railing on the barge sits. Just as he is about to back up for a running jump, a longish rope spills out over the edge, and at the railing is Flea. Reckonning the rope is in reach he makes the running high jump at it instead, getting it or the railing (which ever comes first) at 16+5=21 feet. Gaining purchase on the rope, he climbs - tentatively at first, but soon enough is back on deck. He hauls the rope up for Flea, and hands the coiled end to her with a smile and a "Thank ye".

Gilan watches as everyone goes about their business and shrugs. He will mention the druidwood later when everyone is not concerned with other things.

Taking a look around he notices the wizardess become visible as Jake makes a check. He makes his way over to Jake and slaps him on the back. "Did you get a good feel...I could let you take a little more time if you want." He smiles at his friend and laughs a little.

Digging in his pack he comes up with some rope that he hands to Jake. He will then use his detect magic, if it is still working, to check over the mage for magical items. If his spell is no longer working he will cast it and search her anyways. He will then divest her of all her magical gear, components and any weapons that maybe apparent on her. "You will want to tie her up good Jake." He figures that Jake may have a lot of fun doing this.

Tishe'
Saturday April 17th, 2004 4:09:43 AM

Tishe' stuffs her extra clothing in her backpack and straps it to a clew round the mast.

"Yes, Flea, I've sailed small craft on the Sargrass and Hook River." The plain-faced woman puffs up in slight anger at being ignored by most of the others. "And I've had my hand in a crew of the protection patrols from my city. Grymash is sweet and means well, but we don't have the sailors to man two ships."

She sighs and deflates. "But Trellus is right, too. My warp is too tight, and that weaves an illmade cloth. I've said my piece, and I'll let the two leaders make the final decisions."

"Although..." she stands in buff pants and halter, her scarlet sash about her waist. "Anyone think if the wizard is alive the halfling might be too? It's important to know he's out of the pattern. Where did Grymash drop him?"

Grymash (ac19, hp57/57. Detect Magic)  d20+4=12
Sunday April 18th, 2004 1:37:11 AM

Grymash remains knelt by the dead of the crew when the invisible mage is discovered. He pauses only to glance at her and then returns to his sacred task. To complete the ritual, he pricks his finger and scribes a symbol in blood that represents honorable death on the foreheads of each of the dead crew.

After finishing a final prayer, Grymash stands to his feet and draws a dagger. He stomps over to the unconscious female. He brings the dagger down to her neck .... and then suddenly stops. His hand begins to shake violently. His face expresses much strain as he grapples with with the dark urges that screams in his ears. "KILL HER, KILL HER, KILLER, KILLER!!"

Grymash raises the dagger in furious rage and stabs it down upon the ... the deck, next to her throat! (Will save 12, dang). "Gry want ta do it, but Gry not do. Me not like them. Grymash not uh murderer ... Gry uh killer. She wills face her execution wit both eyes open, after she beez judged gute an proper."

Grymash grabs a handful of hair and drags her body over to the mast. Not with the slightest bit of care, he shoves her against the mast. He quickly begins to strip her of all her belongings except basic clothing*. He then takes a rope from his haversack, and begins to tie her up. Grymash also gags and puts a blind fold over her eyes. (*Gry removes from Trina: boots or shoes, belt and pouches, hat, all jewelry, gloves, cloaks or capes, backpack and all loose misc items like weapons and wands and such. Take 20 to tie her up. Rope Use check 23.)

Grymash then mutters a few words of power and casts Detect Magic. He checks her and her items over for magical auras. "Gilan, bring over da stuff ya find on deck. Gry gots 'Magik Seein'Eyes'. Weez put all magik in this bag an keep for later." Grymash scans the deck. "Hey, where dat treadle dat Mac chop in twos? Bring his stuff too!"

Trellus
Sunday April 18th, 2004 2:37:52 PM

Trellus grin gets wide as the mage makes her appearance.

"Shady of you to drop in," he tells her inert form. While Gilan and Jake are dealing with her, he finds the first mate.

"As soon as you get who you need on the warboat, go after that other ship. We'll give all the help we can." he tells him.

While he's talking to the new Captain, Gry just about kills the mage!

"Gry! NOOOOO!" he cries, rushing over as the half-orc buries the dagger next to her head.
Trellus exhales in relief, and pulls Gry, Gilan, and Jake aside for a quick briefing.

"Leave her ungagged for a second. We need to know who's on that other ship, and what they know." he says.

The young man goes back, plants himself in front of the bound and blindfolded woman, indicates for Gilan, Jake, and Gry to take up positions around her, and then touches her gently.
[Cure Minor Wounds]

Once she wakes up enough, he says calmly.
"The halfling is dead. The human fighter is dead, and all your crew is dead. We know your skills, so if you even think about wiggling those fingers, really bad things will happen to you."

He waits for a moment before diving straight into the matter.
"Who's on that other ship, and what did you dudes tell them?"

Anuk
Sunday April 18th, 2004 9:58:35 PM

While the others gather around the now visible mage, Anuk moves to the railing to get the best view he can of the rapidly disappearing ship, noting the direction it is sailing.

Looking toward the horizon he realizes that something seems...missing. He looks back and forth for a moment trying to think what it might be, then it hits him.

"Twinge!! Where are you, you little sunbaked coward?" He turns and begins searching for the viper.

Jake
Monday April 19th, 2004 1:08:36 AM

Jake is quite amused by the fact that he has grabbed a woman. At Trellus suggestion, a look comes into his eye of amused preparation, then Grymash does his thing.
As usual, the half-orc takes everything a bit hard, Jake thinks to himself. He sits back, watching Grymash go about forcefully, when subtlety and a quiet way would be more his style. He checks his sword, and while they interrogate the girl, he cleans then sharpens it meaningfully.
(I'm going to try aiding in diplomacy or intimidation)

Mac
Monday April 19th, 2004 1:34:08 AM

Back aboard, Mac sets about continuing to help get the ship ready and away as best he can. Something about Tishe' catches his attention in the moments after giving Flea back her rope, but he gets back to work where the first mate asks.

DM George "Interrogations"
Monday April 19th, 2004 10:25:01 PM

Mac with Flea's help is able to climb up onto the ship with out difficulty.

Tishe starts to look for the halfling and finds him lying on the deck in a heap. When she checks for a pulse, she does find the little rogue still alive but unconcious.

Grymash's rough treatment of the mage startles her awake but she is hovering on the edge of unconciousness. She is very groggy and the cure minor spell didn't seem to help.

Grymash scans with a detect magic the Captain's and Mage's possessions. He sees a magic ring and dagger from the mage. He also sees very bloody magic chainmail, a sword, and a cloak. You also find a potion on the fighter.

Some of the crew start to transfer over to the prize ship but it will be very slow going with the limited personal that they have.

Flea  d20=19 d20+11=25 d20+7=13

Flea scrambles nimbly up the rat lines [climb=19] to her now familiar perch atop the main topgallant and searches the horizon for the escaping vessel [Search=25, Spot=13]. The gnome calls down to the deck below describing what she sees.

Gilan (HP: 43/43, AC: 18)  d20+6=19
Monday April 19th, 2004 11:37:17 PM

Gilan glances to Gry and wonders what he is pulling off the wizardess, as he has already taken her gear. He has also used a detect magic spell on the stuff he gathered as well as the wizardess's stuff too. "Ahhh...Gry, I have already done that 'Magik Seein'Eyes' spell on the stuff." Glancing to Trellus he nods as he takes up a position near the mage. He does not say anything but lets Trellus as the questions, he just watches (spot check 19).

Tishe'
Tuesday April 20th, 2004 12:20:55 AM

On finding the halfling still alive but unconscious, she calls to the others. "Hey, Bloodpack! The halfling's thread is still around!"

Knowing nothing of healing, Tishe' isn't worried about moving the small body. Also, remembering how sneaky the little beater is, she doesn't want to give him the chance for mischief.

The plain-faced woman pins the halfling's forearms together in her strong grip, and thus drags him over to the Grass Swift.

"Trellus, maybe you want to pick this one's brain, too?"

Grymash (Detect Magic)  d20+6=22
Tuesday April 20th, 2004 2:48:55 PM

"Oh ... sorry Gilan, me not know!" replies Grymash. His attention quickly turns to Tishe and her little bloody burden. Grymash smiles in grim satisfaction at his handy work. "Is halflin' dead? Gry check." (Heal check 22 to monitor vitals) If the halfling is near death and dying, Gry wont lift a finger to help him. If the halfling is alive and stable, he will do to him what he did to the woman. Instead he will give the halfling the indignity of being stripped completely bare, tied with rope (take 20 on Rope use) and stuffed into bag. Gry cuts a small breath hole. Grymash then ties off the opening of the bag with a powerful knot. Grymash then holds the bag up to Tishe, Gilan and Trellus. "Where weez put da treadle?"

Trellus
Tuesday April 20th, 2004 4:58:35 PM

The cleric isn't particularly pleased with that white handed halfling either. However, he really can't just let him die, especially if the treadle knows something.

So, if he's not stable, Trellus casts another cure minor wounds to get him that way. But Grymash is more than welcome to tie him up and stuff him in a bag. Might do him some good.

"I've five healing potions," he announces to the group. "If you don't have one, take one of mine. You dudes need some way to heal yourselves if we get split up again."

Trellus can do nothing now but wait. He looks on as the short crew takes the prize ship back to Rattledam.
And he glances over the front of the boat to see if they're gaining on the other dudes.
But mostly, he waits for one of these two to wake up.

Anuk
Tuesday April 20th, 2004 8:25:20 PM

Anuk manages to locate Twinge, who is basking in the sunlight near a pile of crates. Anuk hisses softly at him then says, "C'mere you." He grins as the snake moves from his resting place to perch on Anuk's shoulder. "You know, I think next time we're home I'd better spend some time teaching you about fighting. I just sorta figured it'd be natural for you, but it sure doesn't seem that way." The green viper flicks it's tongue and looks on impassively.

Anuk joins the rest of the pack, anxious to hear if the prisoners have any news.

DM George
Tuesday April 20th, 2004 9:49:07 PM

Grymash strips down his halfing friend and sticks him in a sack. Trellus casts a small cure on him, but he is still unconcious, but seems on the verge of waking up as he goes into the sack.

More looking around for magic reveals the halflings shortbow, 7 arrows, some bracers and boots. Upon further scan you see the gnoll leader had a magic battleaxe and shield.

The crew gets the ship underway but the first mate starts pressing you into duties. "Flea you seem comfortable with heights, please help up top. You two seem strong (pointing at Grymash and Mac) could you take the tillers for now. That is all the help I need for now but you others might need to help in relief later."

The ship gets underway, and starts to chase after the other ship which has a big head start.

Flea
Tuesday April 20th, 2004 10:28:17 PM

Flea waves her acknowledgement to the first mate from her position high atop the main mast. She secures herself by wrapping one of the lines around her leg and helps unfurl the sails as directed. Grymash and Mac, who usually tower over her, look small and insignificant from her new vantage. Once underway, the rogue keeps a steady eye on the horizon and tries to guage if they are closing on the other vessel. [Take 20 on Search = 31]

Gilan
Tuesday April 20th, 2004 11:17:23 PM

Gilan gives Gry a smile. "Hey big guy, don't worry about it." He looks to the mage to see what she may say about the questions asked.

Glancing to the firstmate as he asks for help of some of the Bloodpack, he simply nods at the comment of helping out later. He turns his attention back to the matters at hand. "I have a few extra healing potions of my own if anyone is interested...just ask." He thinks it might be a good idea if they can spread out some more of the healing.

Tishe'
Wednesday April 21st, 2004 12:37:03 AM

The small woman seems dissappointed that the new Captain didn't ask for her help, but one of the first things she learned when sailing was the Captain is the Captain. And besides, there are many other interesting things happening...

A mild reproving look goes across her face on seeing the callous way the prisoners are used. "On the otherhand," she says talking quietly to herself, "I can't see them getting away untless either have very good teeth."

But she is distracted from the prisoners by the small pile of magic items collected by Gilan and Grymash. With Grymash enlisted for the tiller, Tishe' moves up next to the druid.

"Gilan, how does the Bloodpack distribute magical booty? Some of this may help in the battle ahead."

Jake
Wednesday April 21st, 2004 1:22:06 AM

The lean half-elf watches the others move about. This whole ship is a mystery to him, he thinks, but he tries to give a hand to the sailors when he can. As it is, though, he's mostly useless, and he knows it.
He looks at the halfling in the sack, and grimaces. Is that really what a raider is? He goes over to the woman tied to the mast and looks at her face closely. Is this what the evil worshippers are? He glares at her... and slaps her, while she's helpless. Damned raiders!
He takes a few breaths, somewhat ashamed. At losing control of himself, not at his hatred of the woman, and all she stands for.
"Why don't we just toss them in the grass...? Give back to the Plains. It'll speed us up, getting rid of the balast?"

Mac
Wednesday April 21st, 2004 12:00:29 PM

The taur heads aft and takes turn at one of the tillers. He looks at Jake after his suggestion. If this is a vote then Jake doesn't have his support on that call.

Trellus
Wednesday April 21st, 2004 6:52:41 PM

The blond cleric takes a deep, cleansing breath as he runs his right hand up the back of his neck.

"We can't Jake," he says quietly, but with conviction. "I got no problem killing them in a fight, but they're not going anywhere now.

Plus the beaters'll want 'em.

And they might still tell us what those other dudes are weaving."

Trellus looks sourly at the halfling and mage, another version of rapke intent on cutting his family's thread, and sighs.

"Just leave them be."

The cleric takes up a position to keep both of the prisoners in plain sight, and answers Tishe's question.

"Usually we try to figure out what the stuff is, and split it up later," he says. "You can weave whatever you like until then."

Catching Grymash out of the corner of his eye, the young man suddenly grins widely.

"We're not as keen on weaving unknown stuff as we used to be," he chuckles.

Grymash
Wednesday April 21st, 2004 8:24:14 PM

Grymash while concentrating on his new task at the tiller, it finally dawns on him. "Gry be sailin'?! GRY BE SAILIN', HEE HEE HEE!! Dis shaaaddy!" He seems almost giddy after forgetting about their current mission for just a short moment. Only Jake's slap draws him back. "Whut Jake, she turns ya down too, huh?" Gry says laughingly, "Look, Gry be SAILIN'!!"

Anuk
Wednesday April 21st, 2004 8:30:59 PM

As they get underway Anuk gladly gives the sailors any help they need. He stops at the bottom of Flea's mast and calls up, "How's the weather up there?"

When he has a moment, he pulls the ioun stone from his cloak and tells Trellus and Tishe', "There's room for a couple of extra spells in here. Got anything shady you'd like to add?"

DM George
Wednesday April 21st, 2004 10:15:32 PM

The ship sails on throughout the day. Though the raider's ship seems to be of the same design as the Grass Swift is slowly starts to pull away. It isn't very obvious but they are making slightly better time.

The prisoners are quiet for most of the day but at the end of the day, the sack with the halfling starts to thrash about and the halfling starts to weakly yell.

The new captain does rotate crew around and he pulls Tishe aside and says, "You seem to know something about ships. I want you to become my first mate temporarily. I need someone on deck at night who knows what they are doing. Will you take this task?"

Flea
Wednesday April 21st, 2004 11:01:54 PM

Flea shouts down to Anuk "Yo-ho-ho! Looks like fine sailing ahead." She stays atop until the light begins to fade before descending to the deck. She pulls aside the first mate "I don't think we are catching them" she says.

Flea wanders over to the pile of treasure on the deck and pokes through it with her dagger.

Gilan
Wednesday April 21st, 2004 11:04:46 PM

Gilan glances to Tishe' but Trellus beats him to the punch and he simply nods. "He is right though, it may not be a good idea to mess with stuff too much till it is identified." He glances to Gry and shivers at the thought of another mishap.

He makes his way to the railing and watches the other ship. "Is it just me or is she getting further away from us?" This does bother him to a point, if they do not catch this ship they will find out nothing...worse yet they will not stop anything either.

He will work at whatever tasks the new captain gives him. He smiles at Gry as he goes on about his sailing and shakes his head. "It is good to forget the real problems for a time." Looking to the trashing bag he frowns and then moves that way. Not an overly violent type of person he still kicks the bag rather hard. "Shut your mouth or I introduce you to Gry again...you know the big guy that nearly cut your thread." He then goes back to his time studying the outlying plains.

[Anything of interest from a druids standpoint; ex. animals and the like?]

[Sounds like a new spell list to come too.]

Tishe'
Thursday April 22nd, 2004 1:11:47 AM

"Oh" says the plain-faced woman to Trellus and Gilan, curiosity piqued at the references to some past mishap. "I would think anything these beaters were wearing would be fine." She shrugs and lets the treasure be stuffed in a bag for later.

Tishe' smiles at Grymash's unrestrained glee, and tucks an errant lock of wavy brown hair back into her pony tail as she turns to Anuk. "I can put a Spider Climb or Endure Elements in your stone, Anuk. With a little preparation, a magic missle spell."

She watches the other barge slowly increase the distance from the GrassSwift. "We've got damage. Perhaps they have more sail, or just a larger crew to capture every ounce of wind." She shakes her head. "I don't know what to do to help, but maybe if we know what direction they're going, we can beter prepare."

With only wearing a halter and trews, Tishe's blush is easily seen down past her shoulders. It nearly touches the blood red sash about her waist. "First mate on a grass merchant? Wow! But that's a big responsibility." She sobers a little "I do know something of sailing," agrees Tishe' slowly, "and I'll do the best I can. Means I need some sleep now, though." She goes to the hold to rest.

Jake
Thursday April 22nd, 2004 3:13:37 AM

At one point in the day, Joe will mention to Trellus he does need a few hits of that healing stick, as he's currently still wandering around pretty battered and bruised. (Hope to get a few healed before the following)
Jake listens to the sack yelp, so he wanders on over and pokes it slightly. "Hey, quit moving, ya little creep. I might just open it up for a little fresh air, if you tell us who you are and what you were doing 'bout our city."

Thursday April 22nd, 2004 10:07:50 AM

"And where that other ship is going," Trellus adds to Jake's comment.
"And what you dudes told them about us."

Trellus taps Jake again with his healing wand
[16 hp healed],
and then a second time if he needs it.
[11 hp healed].
He also hands the fighter two potions of cure light wounds.
"For the love of Alemi," he mutters to his friend, "if you're hurt, DRINK them!"
Trellus is sure he'll never understand Jake's aversion to magic.

He turns to look sourly at the escaping vessel.
"Maybe one of us can kick up a wind?" he asks Sterlin and Gilan hopefully.
