DM Bob & Carla (Severity of fever)d3=2 Monday April 12th, 2004 12:44:51 PM
Andrath moves eastward into the swamp at Bralin's suggestion. A mist clings close to the ground, enveloping his feet and further silencing his footsteps on the soft earth. The rogue finds his new armor a perfect fit. He neither hears or sees anything out of the ordinary.
The path is narrow and twisty, winding it's way between pockets of open water and the buttressed trunks of the larger trees. No longer is there the chill of winter in the air, however the damp cold creeps through warm wollens and chills the bones.
Cadmar and Lorth follow behind the party's scout. Both paladins are discomforted by the appearance of strange discolourations on their arms. They will discover additional blemishes elsewhere on their body should they choose to look. Each mark is roughly circular in shape with a reddish ring surrounding a patch of whiter skin in the center. The marks begin to itch, and both men can feel the early signs of fever welling within them. [Fort Save vs DC 14 or lose 2 Str.]
Elerinn, Alkali, and Cassandra, follow in the middle of the group, lost in their own thoughts, while Bralin and Kedarn keep a careful watch, over the back trail and their fellow adventurers.
After 1 hour of picking his way through the swamp, Andrath comes to a fork in the path, one way heads due east, the second southeast. From where the rogue stands there is little to choose between, although the second path must surely cross the stream that has paralleled their path so far.
Elerinn Monday April 12th, 2004 6:28:41 PM
Elerinn looks at Cadmar and Lorth when they discover their strange spots all over their bodies. Besides Cassandra's curse, there seems to be another problem. The gnome feels sorry he doesn't know anything about diseases and medicine, and worries about his friends' health.
While going deeper and deeper into the swamp, Elerinn gets more quiet, watchfull for any danger. When the second fork is reached, Elerinn remains silent. "Honestly, I have no idea which way we could find the man who can help Cassandra. Perhaps someone can search for any unusual humanoid footprints?"
Cadmar [-2 Str] d20+7=9 d20+6=9 d20+2=21 Tuesday April 13th, 2004 3:24:20 AM
After a moment Cadmar's step becomes less sure and the ranger starts to sweat under the weight of his equipment [failed save]. The itching sensation is unbearable and, even if he dismissed it at first as the effect of insect bites, there is no denying it now: he has contracted some kind of disease. When the party stops at the fork he walks a little bit away from the group, unceremoniously dumps his backpack on the floor, pulls off his shirt, and starts to examine the marks [Heal 9 to recognize the disease, not likely].
Cadmar has been very ill once. A childhood illness held him bedridden for a few years and left him with his strength permamently shattered. He immediately starts to wonder if "adventuring" might have triggered a relapse. For the first time since the group set out from Jarlswolf Cadmar is really afraid. Owlbears, bandits you can fight, but a disease is a killer you can't protect against. When he rejoins the group Cadmar does his best to hide his fear [Cha 21].
"I will be bringing up the rear from now on. It seems I am coming down with something and I don't want to pass it on to the rest of you."
As per Elerinn's suggestion, Cadmar circles the fork in the road looking for tracks [Take 20 on search: 23].
Lorth d20+9=17 d20+6=12 Tuesday April 13th, 2004 7:54:45 AM
Lorth examines the red splotches on his body, when he begins to itch. "Friends I seem to be having some kind of reaction to something." This must be some kind of magical effect or parasite Lorth thinks, I haven't been sick since my childhood. "Perhaps there is some kind of parasite, in this swamp.", he offers. (Fort Save: 17, also immune to all diseases Heal check: 12 to identify it)
Bralin d20+6=18 Tuesday April 13th, 2004 8:30:24 AM
When Cadmar and Lorth both say they're coming down with something, Bralin gives Kedarn a look. The cleric doesn't move right away, so the dwarf chooses Cadmar.
As the man is pulling off his shirt, Bralin pulls a healer's kit out of his pack and gets to work.
"Open your mouth," he commands. When/If Cadmar complies, Bralin pops a marble sized stone into his mouth, and then continues examining/treating the sores. Bralin is silent throughout the rest of the process.
[Heal check - Treating disease - roll 18. I think that replaces Cadmar's failed Fort save]
Kedarn d20+7=24 Tuesday April 13th, 2004 10:50:25 AM
Kedarn seeing Cadmar and Lorth looking like they are coming down with some sort of illness Kedarn quickly moves over to Lorth and then starts to check him out.
*** Heal: 24 ***
Andrath Tuesday April 13th, 2004 6:39:42 PM
Andrath stops at the fork, and returns to the party. "The trail forks up ahead; one fork goes straight east, and the second one crosses the stream and heads southeast. Any suggestions? I am leaning towards continuing on the path, and keeping east."
The elf notices the healers trying to help a couple of the party members and asks, "What is going on? Are you hurt? I didn't spot any traps as I went by, but that doesn't mean that I might not have missed something."
Alkali d20+8=23 Tuesday April 13th, 2004 9:29:57 PM
Alkali keeps walking foward in thought when Cadmar mentions his condition. He stops and looks at both Cadmar and Lorth. Alkali asks Cadmar to sit down so he can be examined. "Hm... I hope this isn't contagious..."

DM Bob & Carla Tuesday April 13th, 2004 11:23:23 PM
The party pauses as Cadmar and Lorth experience symptoms of some affliction. A divine power protects Lorth warding off the infection. The spots disappear, and all symptoms vanish. Cadmar is not so lucky, but Bralin's ministrations ease the human's symptoms somewhat, as he senses some of his strength return as the fever passes.
After a cursory examination Kedarn and Alkali are positive that the paladin's problems were caused by a tick-like insect that attaches itself to the skin of animals and humans and spreads disease as it sucks it's victims blood. It is common enough in mouldering old hay or straw such as that used to stuff most country home mattresses, thus the name bed bug given it's host. If not treated, the illness eventually goes away, leaving no lasting effects. The symptoms can last a few days however, and be disconcerting.
Andrath reports his findings of another fork in the road, and makes a suggestion regarding which route to take. Neither route is particularly inviting.
At Elerinn's urging, Cadmar makes a thorough search, but there are no clues that would lead him to believe one route is better than the other.
Which way to go?
Lorth Wednesday April 14th, 2004 7:49:17 AM
Lorth sweats it out a few minutes and the rash begins to clear up. "Seems I'm a bit tougher than whatever this is. I don't think it is getting any worse on me, better everyone concentrate on Cadmar." Lorth unslings his warhammer and holds it behind his shield, then he waits for the signal to forge ahead.
Cadmar Wednesday April 14th, 2004 1:06:05 PM
Cadmar surrenders to the examination of others and is glad when their help makes the itching go away. "Thank you all" he says, at the same time making a mental note to check himself for any remaining bugs next time he takes a bath.
Even though others tell him the disease is minor and passes away without lasting consequences, the ranger is still visibly unnerved. The situation brought back bad memories.
"Um, before we decide which trail to take, maybe you could climb a tall tree and take a look around, Andrath? If our man is civilized enough to cook the meat he eats we might be able to see smoke. Otherwise I don't mind going east."
Bralin Wednesday April 14th, 2004 1:14:58 PM
With a nod to Cadmar, Bralin repacks his kit.
He waits silently for the rest of the group to pick a direction. Since he doesn't know what they seek, which path they take is irrelevant.
Elerinn Wednesday April 14th, 2004 3:49:14 PM
Elerinn looks at both possible directions when Cadmar discovers no traces. When Cadmar suggests to go east, he nods and says: "Allright, let Wardd guide us over the right path. Let's go east after Andrath, or someone else able to climb trees, has examined the surroundings. I doubt the feral man uses fire, but it would never hurt to take a good look around."
Kedarn Wednesday April 14th, 2004 5:06:59 PM
Kedarn tells everyone "you might want to check for any of the bugs when we make camp come night fall."
"Andrath, keep us on the path that keeps along the creek if at all possible." Kedarn says.
Alkali Wednesday April 14th, 2004 9:25:56 PM
When Alkali sees its bugs as the cause he has a small chuckle. "Small things can make titans fall..." He awaits the decision on the road to take.
Andrath d20+11=26 d20+15=34 Wednesday April 14th, 2004 11:17:10 PM
Andrath agrees to climb a nearby tree, the largest that he can find within sight. He will take 10 on the climb, since he is not under pressure. [OOC: Resulting in a climb check of 19]. When he reaches as high as he feels safe, he will scan the area, looking for some sort of indication as to which direction to go. [OOC: Search roll of 26, Spot roll of 34].
Assuming that there is no reason to change the party's desire to go east, Andrath will once again move into the lead, following the trail to the east.
If there is something that catches his eye, Andrath will tell the party the new information, so that they can make a more informed decision.
DM Bob & Carla Wednesday April 14th, 2004 11:33:33 PM
Andrath safely negotiates a large tree. As he stands in it's high branches he has a view of the dense forest canopy. It is the middle of the day and the sun is high above the trees. In the distance, the keen eyed rogue can make out one tree that is different from the others. It is taller, with a big umbrella like canopy. It towers above it's neighbors, like a giant among men.
The south-east route appears to lead away from the large landmark, whereas the eastern route follows the creek and seems to lead towards the center of the swamp and in the general direction of the unusual tree. It is impossible to see the path due to the thick foliage and the obscuring whisps of mist the rise up from the swamp.
Andrath shares his information with the party, once he has safely made his way down from the tree. The group takes up their gear and heads east.
Cadmar Thursday April 15th, 2004 7:49:34 AM
Cadmar marches into the marches, wondering if he will be pulling leeches out of his boots in the evening.
Lorth Thursday April 15th, 2004 7:53:54 AM
Lorth listens to Andrath's description and then heads east when the party starts to move out. He keeps the same spot in line that he had before.
Bralin Thursday April 15th, 2004 10:05:41 AM
The dwarf resumes his rear guard, and walks silently behind the others.
Kedarn Thursday April 15th, 2004 4:34:01 PM
Hearing what Andrath tells the group Kedarn says "I still think keep following the path heading east along the creek."
Alkali Thursday April 15th, 2004 9:31:35 PM
Alkali walks along the trail watching Cassandra to make sure she's ok.
Andrath d20+11=27 d20+15=21 Thursday April 15th, 2004 11:27:00 PM
Andrath moves back to the front of the party, once again keeping his eyes and ears open. [OOC: Search 27, Spot 21]
DM Bob & Carla Friday April 16th, 2004 12:07:27 AM
The forest grows warmer, the deeper the party moves into the swamp. The canopies of the trees block out much of the sun. Only a few dappled rays reach the dense undergrowth. The air is damp and sweet with the smell of decomposing vegetation. Vines climb many of the trees, overcoming the smaller stems and hanging from the large lower branches of the biggest trees. Bird calls and the chirps and clicks of a variety of insects fill the air as the sun reaches its zenith.
Cadmar and Lorth follow some 20 feet behind the party's scout. Any further and they might lose sight of the rogue. The rest of the party straggles behind in a loose line with Bralin at the rear.
The trail widens and Andrath comes to a small section of bare ground, about 20 feet across, before it continues again, meandering through the marshy area. His keen eyes make out the faint signs of small hoof prints heading into the opening.
Elerinn Friday April 16th, 2004 10:22:35 AM
Elerinn gets more and more uncomfortable as the group travels deeper into the swamp. It feels like the swamp is closing in on him and the gnome is glad when he spots Andrath standing before an opening. With a desire to breath clearer and see some more of the bright sun, he walks over to Andrath who has discovered some footprints in the marshy ground.
Lorth Friday April 16th, 2004 10:27:43 AM
Lorth takes care to disturb as little as possible as the party continues on. When he sees Andrath stop, he stops where he is and awaits a signal.
Kedarn Friday April 16th, 2004 10:29:09 AM
Kedarn keeps an eye on everyone so that nobody gets lost while following Andrath.
Bralin d20+5=20 d20+4=10 Friday April 16th, 2004 11:16:04 AM
The dwarf follows in typical silence. Ironically, he finds the closeness of the forest wall comforting, although the smell leaves much to be desired.
At least this wood doesn't beat on your senses like the last one he entered.
When the group halts, Bralin automatically turns to inspect their backtrail. Relying on his darkvision, he peers into gloomy forest.
[Spot 20, Listen 10]
Cadmar Friday April 16th, 2004 3:09:20 PM
When the group arrives at the clearing Cadmar approaches the tracks pointed out by Andrath and kneels on the ground.
"Right, take five people. It seems that there is something here worth looking at."
Cadmar will throughly search the clearing for tracks [Take20 on Search: 23]. In case somebody is better at searching than him he will help him instead [Aid Another, please roll for me].
Andrath d20+10=21 d20+11=29 d20+15=33 Saturday April 17th, 2004 11:28:58 AM
Once again out of his element, Andrath lets the forest-savvy specialists try to figure what is going on in the clearing. He will circle the opening, keeping his eyes and ears open, thinking, "This is a pretty good spot for an ambush." [OOC: Listen 21, Search 29, Spot 33].
DM Bob & Carla Sunday April 18th, 2004 8:54:33 PM
Andrath circles the clearing, picking his way carefully through the surrounding forest, scanning the bush with his keen eyes, alert for any foreign sounds, but all seems quiet. Bralin watches carefully over their back trail while the others await the results of Cadmar's evaluation.
Concentrating on the tracks themselves, the paladin follows them into the clearing, or at least that is his intent. However, the ground gives way beneath him and he finds himself immersed in a soupy mixture of water and earth that threatens to overcome him. [Swim Check vs DC 10 to keep your head above the surface]
Elerinn sees the horrible event unfold before his eyes and reaches out for the paladin [Reflex Check vs DC 14 to grab and hold Cadmar near the edge, Strength Check vs DC 15 to pull him to safety].
Cadmar d20-12=-9 Monday April 19th, 2004 2:52:17 AM
Encumbered by all the equipment he is carrying Cadmar doesn't have a chance to stay on surface by himself [Swim check -9] and sinks like a rock. If Elerinn is unsuccessful in lending him a hand Cadmar starts holding his breath [round 1 of 14] and, while under the surface of the mud, starts to get rid of his equipment. First, he slides out of the harness of his backpack and leaves it in the murky water.
Elerinn d20+5=20 d20-2=-1 Monday April 19th, 2004 9:28:13 AM
Elerinn sees Cadmar falling into the murky water. The gnome immediatly acts and tries to pull him up before he dissapears down the deep mud. He manages to get his friends hand, but doesn't have the strenght to pull him up. With a painfull look on his face, he is able to maintain his hold on Cadmar. Realizing he can't pull Cadmar out by himself, he calls out: "Quick! Help him, I can't hold him much longer!"
Bralin d20+4=21 Monday April 19th, 2004 9:59:34 AM
At Elerinn's cry, Bralin spins around.
The gnome is barely holding on to a quickly sinking Cadmar. A situation that has but one outcome.
The dwarf strides over, grabs Cadmar, and pulls. [Str 21]
Lorth Monday April 19th, 2004 10:47:41 AM
Lorth runs to the edge of the pit and helps steady Elerinn, so that he doesn't get pulled in also.
Kedarn Monday April 19th, 2004 6:17:55 PM
Kedarn seeing this happening calls out "Watch where you step you might end up going for a swim instead of solid ground."
Kedarn looks for a tree branch on the ground that he can use as a pole to test the ground to see where it is solid.
Alkali Monday April 19th, 2004 9:49:59 PM
Alkali watches as the events unfold before him. He tries to stay back and look for any trouble that may approach. Every step he takes he tries to prod the ground with a stick to prevent himself from sinking.
Andrath Monday April 19th, 2004 10:04:50 PM
Regretting that he never learned to swim, Andrath moves to the edge of the clearing, drawing his longsword as he moves. He quickly selects a tree sapling, about 4"-5" at the base, and at least 15' high, and starts to chop at it, to cut it down.
If there is no sapling within easy reach, he will take off his backpack, and pull out his rope and lantern, tying the lantern onto the end of the rope for weight.
DM Bob & Carla Monday April 19th, 2004 11:09:45 PM
Cadmar struggles unsuccessfully to stay above the surface of the quicksand and sinks towards the bottom. As he slips beneath the surface he distinctly feels something solid brush against his leg...and then a tug on his sleeve rekindles hope that all is not lost.
Elerinn manages to grab the sleeve of Cadmar's shirt just as he sinks beneath the crusty surface, but the Gnome is no match for Cadmar's weight and the sucking mud. He struggles to maintain his grasp and feels himself being pulled into the mire behind the paladin. Regardless he maintains his hold and calls for help.
Bralin whirls in a split second reaction and hauls the spluttering paladin half-way out of the quicksand, while Lorth prevents Elerinn from being pulled in himself.
The remainder of the party set about cutting branches from trees to test the ground before them, obviously more aware of the perils that await.
Cadmar crawls the rest of the way out and the mud settles. As the surface dries, all signs of its danger vanish.
Lorth Tuesday April 20th, 2004 7:53:42 AM
Lorth releases his grip on Elerinn when he's sure the Gnome has his footing. "I've never seen anything like that before. Cadmar are you ok?"
Cadmar Tuesday April 20th, 2004 12:43:57 PM
"Thank you, thank you- I would have-" Cadmar's voice breaks. He just lays on the grass for a moment until his breath returns to normal and his knees stop shaking.
"I think I am OK now." He says weakly as he sits up. His thought turns to the change of clothing he brought for the trip. He opens his backpack and more mud pours out.
"Oh no!" he suddenly cries, and with shaking hands Cadmar starts to throw the contents of his backpack out on the grass. Then he picks up his spellbook and checks if it survived the dip.
[The items that might have been damaged by water/mud: spell component pouch, spellbook, trail rations, Catacombs vouchers. Did I lose anything?]
Elerinn Tuesday April 20th, 2004 2:02:01 PM
Elerinn sits next to the shaken Cadmar for some moments, unable to speak or do anything but look at the mud where his friend almost dissapeared. There, nothing hints at the thing that just happened, as the quicksand has settled. While Cadmar searches his backpack for spoiled equipment, Elerinn is able to stand up. In a soft voice, he says: "Thank you, Lorth, I almost followed Cadmar into that dangerous sand." He pauses, silently thanks Wardd for his help and looks at Cadmar. Trying to smile, he says: "Well, I guess you almost got eaten, but not by anything we expected, Cadmar."
Elerinn suddenly remembers what Cadmar was doing before he almost dissapeared into the dangerous quicksand. In a distant voice, he states: "Cadmar, am I right to think you almost found the deer you were searching for, down there?"
Bralin Tuesday April 20th, 2004 3:30:16 PM
The dwarf nods a welcome at Cadmar. The man seems to attract trouble, and Bralin makes a mental note to keep some space between the paladin and himself.
As Cadmar checks on the condition of his equipment, Bralin silently returns to his rearguard watch.
Kedarn Tuesday April 20th, 2004 8:04:11 PM
Kedarn will start to probe with the branch to try and find a path towards the direction that they have been travelling.
Alkali Tuesday April 20th, 2004 8:31:33 PM
Alkali once again resumes his spot in the middle of the party helping Cassandra. He keeps Karee on his shoulder, unsure whether the hawk would give there position away to enemies.
Andrath d20+10=25 d20+11=25 d20+15=27 Tuesday April 20th, 2004 11:15:26 PM
Andrath grins at Cadmar, and says, "Glad to have you back, safe and sound. I never was one much for the forest, so if any of you have any ideas, so that we don't run into a problem like this again, please let me know. For the next little while, I will use this sapling to feel the ground in front of me, to hopefully find these sinkholes before they catch one of us again."
Once Cadmar and the others have cleaned and collected their gear, Andrath once again leads the way east, careful to now feel the ground in front of him with his new staff, holding his longsword in his other hand. As in the past, he continues to keep his ears and eyes open for more trouble. [OOC: Listen 25, Search 25, Spot 27]

The party keeps a careful watch while Cadmar recovers from his ordeal and examines his belongings. The good news is that the spell book and spell components pouch were saved any significant damage, The trail rations are no longer fit for consumption, and a number of the seals look damaged to varying degrees, but it is difficult to discern whether they are beyond salvage.
After drying and repacking his belongings, Cadmar follows Andrath and Lorth around the clearing until they once again pick up the eastward trail. The party's progress is significantly slowed by the constant probing of the ground before them.
The morning turns to afternoon and then evening as they pick their way eastward. As the sun begins to set, the mist once again rises from the ground and soon only those with darkvision will be able to see their way.
Cadmar Wednesday April 21st, 2004 12:23:38 PM
When Elerinn mentions deer, Cadmar instinctively says: "Cassandra".
"Well, I don't know what it was, but it sure had much lighter step than me."
Cadmar, unhappy and quiet, walks in the middle of the party. After some time he gets totally absorbed by mud sloshing in his boots and drying up on his person. The damage could have been much more severe and he is relieved that his spellbook survived the ordeal, but the mere thought of how much time he will have to spend cleaning his chain shirt is enough to turn his mood sour.
"We haven't yet checked the items found by Andrath in the w-"
He stops just in time.
"In the lair for magic. When somebody does that, could you please scan my seals? I think some of them lost their magic, and I would like to know for sure which of them I can still rely on..."
Bralin Wednesday April 21st, 2004 1:10:41 PM
While he can detect magic, Bralin doesn't immediately reply to Cadmar's plea. Surely one of the others can perform that task, and the dwarf is tired of coming to the rescue.
He marches silently, waiting for the gnome to perform his magic on the man.
In the meantime, some more information would be useful.
"Kedarn", he calls softly to the cleric in front of him. "What plan have we to remove yon maid's affliction?"
Elerinn Wednesday April 21st, 2004 4:25:00 PM
Elerinn casts a Detect Magic spell, to check which of Cadmar's seals are still usable. When the sun slowly dissapears behind the unseen horizon and the mists once again covers the ground around the group, Elerinn says: "We should set up camp, I believe. Night is coming and the idea of travelling through this treacherous swamp in darkness doesn't appeal to me at all. What do you think?"
Kedarn (Darkvision & Low-light vision) d20+5=25 Wednesday April 21st, 2004 5:49:56 PM
"We were told to seek out Denholm Longtooth, as he may have the knowledge or ability to aid Cassandra and deal with the mask. We were told he lives in the Wyrmsfut and to 'look for a large tree, larger than any others by far and you will find Denholm...if he wishes to be found.'" Kedarn tells Bralin.
"You are right Elerinn we should set up a camp before anymore of us fall into the swamp while we are moving about in the mist and dark" Kedarn comments.
"Andrath, lets find a place where we can camp for the night before we have anymore unexpected swimming." calls out Kedarn
Kedarn will look about and try to find a place for the group to camp.
*** Spot: 25 (nat 20) ***
Alkali Wednesday April 21st, 2004 9:25:45 PM
Alkali agrees that the party should start camp. "We need to save our energies for when we meet this Denholm guy. Still animals like wo..." Alkali catches his words, "like animals would be out." He sets Karee to set up a watch point when the part sets camp.
DM Bob & Carla d3=1 Wednesday April 21st, 2004 11:36:28 PM
Kedarn finds a small mound with several large trees growing from it. It appears to be dry and provides at least a small vantage over the lower ground that surrounds them. As he helps set up camp he fill's Bralin in on Denholm Longtooth as best he can.
Cadmar once again dumps out his sack and spreads out his belongings to dry. Elerinn takes the opportunity to cast Detect Magic on the seals and discovers that three of them are no longer exuding any magical aura. The gnome points out each one to Cadmar [fire resistance, unconstricting movement, slumber].
The night passes uneventfully, although sleep is difficult to come by for Cadmar. Sand and grit have found there way into all the places that cause the most discomfort and his dreams are troubled by images of dark wet places and the evils that lurk there.
[Cadmar - please roll a fortitude save vs DC 14 or take 1 point of temporary strength damage from the tick borne disease]
Cadmar [-1Str] d20+7=11 Thursday April 22nd, 2004 7:54:20 AM
Cadmar thanks Elerinn and, with visible regret, throws the three inactive seals into the swamp. As the night approaches he tries to clean up a little bit, but soon realizes that he is too tired to bother himself with going over his whole equipment, so instead he just washes his face and hands. The ranger thoroughly wraps himself with his dirty blanket and two spare cloaks he brought along and tries to go to sleep, but soon finds himself tossing in the bedroll in fever [failed Fort save].
Lorth Thursday April 22nd, 2004 8:42:29 AM
When the party sets up camp, Lorth gathers some dead wood for burning if they make a fire. He carefully moves around the area of the camp checking for any swampy pits.
He then cleans his armor best he can and sets up his bedroll for the evening.
Bralin Thursday April 22nd, 2004 9:57:20 AM
Bralin accepts Kedarn's explanation without comment. If they must seek out this Denholm Longtooth, then that is what they will do.
The dwarf sleeps quietly, and pulls his watch in attentive silence.
In the morning, he again performs his hour long ritual of gazing intently into his obsidian sphere. Then, he eats and rises, ready to resume his roll as rear guard.
Subbing Doom for Shield of Faith on Bralin's spell list
Elerinn Thursday April 22nd, 2004 5:47:29 PM
Elerinn wakes rested and revived and quietly looks at the little sunlight that penetrates the marshes' tall vegetation. When Bralin performs his personal ritual, the gnome observes him with much interest. When the new companion is finished, Elerinn asks him about the ritual: "Good morning, Sir Bralin. May I ask what you were doing?"
Looking at Cadmar, Elerinn notices his friend has had a bad night and says: "Perhaps the man we are looking for can help you, too, Cadmar. You look sick."
When the group is ready to get going again, Elerinn says: "Perhaps one of us could climb a tree for a second time, so we can locate the tall tree we are looking for again."
Alkali Thursday April 22nd, 2004 7:20:10 PM
Alkali sleeps through the night rather peacefully. He wakes up to find Cadmar tossing and turning. He gently tries to wake him up and adminster what little help he can.
When Elerinn suggests climbing a tree again, Alkali suggests that he could send his hawk to the top instead.
Andrath d20+10=17 d20+11=17 d20+15=34 Thursday April 22nd, 2004 11:04:41 PM
In the morning, Andrath rolls out of his sleeping cloak and yawns. He does his stretching exercises while the spellcasters ready themselves for the day. After working up a light sweat, the elf thinks, "This swamp may be wet, but it is warmer. Thank the gods that this place is warmer. I am not a big fan of cold weather."
Andrath teases the witch, "When did your hawk learn to climb?" Then he carefully climbs up the branches of a nearby tree, to make sure that they are still on the path to the large tree that he spotted earlier.
Assuming that nothing else keeps them at the camp, and that the path is still clear to the east and the great tree, Andrath once again strikes out ahead of the party, carefully checking the ground with his pokey stick. [OOC: Listen 17, Search 17, Spot 34]
DM Bob & Carla Thursday April 22nd, 2004 11:36:49 PM
Cadmar wakes in the morning after an uncomfortable night despite the aid administered by Alkali. The remainder of the party rise refreshed and ready for the continuation of their journey. Bralin observes his morning ritual under the watchful eye of Elerinn.
Andrath climbs one of the trees to get a better look at their surroundings and quips about the climbing ability of Alkali's feathered friend. Cassandra is far enough away that the word 'hawk' does not elicit a response from the mask.
Once he is high in the crown of the tree, the rogue sees the large tree in the distance and notes that it now lies to the southeast and with a little imagination he can make out the faint tracing of a path heading in that direction not far east from where they currently are.
Once safely on terra firma Andrath leads the party east to a fork in the path; one branch continuing east, the other tracking to the southeast.
Kedarn d20+7=19 Friday April 23rd, 2004 4:00:09 AM

Bralin Friday April 23rd, 2004 8:30:30 AM
Turning to gnome, Bralin nods in acknowledgement of the question. "Good morning, Sir Mage."
The dwarf presents the sphere to Elerinn. It is the size of a human fist, an unblemished black, highly polished, and perferctly round. Holding it in front of the gnome, Bralin looks upon it affectionately.
"Through this vessel I commune with the living rock of the Wold, and the gods grant me some portion of its power and strength."
When the group resumes, Bralin falls back to his customary rearguard.
Lorth Friday April 23rd, 2004 8:43:43 AM
In the morning Lorth packs his gear, stowing everything in its place. After checking twice that everything is snug away, he takes his place in the marching line.
Cadmar [-1Str] Friday April 23rd, 2004 11:11:57 AM
Cadmar, feeling generally miserable, surrenders to the examination by Kedarn.
"Thank you. I'm afraid I'm not taking this journey all that well."
Still feeling weak, the ranger puts his cloak on and wraps himself tightly. He doesn't have anything to eat for breakfast, but the illness has taken away his appetite anyway, so he just drinks some water. As the party sets on its way he does his best to keep up with others, but soon finds himself sweating under the load of his backpack.
Elerinn Sunday April 25th, 2004 5:12:02 AM
Elerinn makes sure he positions himself somewhere in the middle of the group. When Andrath says the large tree is getting closer, the gnome moves over to the silent Cassandra and says: "You see, my lady? We will find someone to help you soon!" He smiles sincerely and hopes he can cheer the witch up somewhat.
When the group comes at the fork in the path, Elerinn asks Andrath which way would be best, since his companion has seen the location of the larger tree.
Andrath Sunday April 25th, 2004 1:57:14 PM
Figuring that the southeast path is the way to go, Andrath makes the slight turn to the right, and continues to lead towards the big tree, careful to poke the ground in front of him as he moves.
Alkali Sunday April 25th, 2004 9:02:50 PM
Alkali chuckles at Andarth's response about the hawk. With renewed spirit, Alkali marches foward, gently proding the ground with a stick before taking the step.
DM Bob & Carla Sunday April 25th, 2004 9:43:43 PM
As the party picks it's way deeper into Wyrmsfut, the air grows warmer, the vegetation more lush, and the earthy smell more pungent.
Cadmar shakes off his fever under Kedarn's care [OOC substituted Kedarn's healing check for Cadmar's Fort Save]and takes his place near the front of the party along with Lorth. Elerinn and Alkali walk alongside Cassandra and attempt to raise her flagging spirits, while Bralin takes the rear guard.
Andrath leads the party in a southwesterly direction where they must cross a meandering stream. It is hard going as the undergrowth has nearly engulfed the trail, encouraged in it's growth by the oxygen enriched flow of the stream. On more than one occassion Andrath leads them around soft ground and patches of quicksand. Finally, near mid-day Andrath comes to a small clearing of open ground where the path seems to divide into three. [Spot checks please]
Andrath d20+15=17 Monday April 26th, 2004 12:43:29 AM
Andrath turns and says, "We seem to have 3 different trails here. Can anyone figure out which direction we should go. He waits to let the rest of the party catch up, while he scans the clearing for any indication of the preferred direction. [OOC: Spot roll of 17]
Cadmar d20+1=11 Monday April 26th, 2004 8:43:15 AM
[Spot 11] Cadmar eyes the clearing with understandable suspicion. "Might be a good time to climb a tree again..."
Lorth d20+1=20 Monday April 26th, 2004 8:57:04 AM
Lorth halts his walking and glances around. (Spot 20)
Bralin d20+5=8 Monday April 26th, 2004 11:27:54 AM
Bralin watches the gnome dart off after his explanation. He shrugs to himself. He's known few wizards, and all have been as flighty as this one. He wonders if they are all like that.
Trailing the group, he bends his mind to the tasks of a rear guard, turning often and unexpectedly to catch a glance of anything following.
The scout is quite good, Bralin notes with approval.
As the group stops, the dwarf again checks the backtrail [Spot 8], nodding to himself at Cadmar's suggestion. Climbing a high tree has succeeded twice before.
Elerinn Monday April 26th, 2004 3:33:53 PM
Elerinn agrees with Cadmar and says: "Someone should climb a tree again. Otherwise we risk getting lost or moving in circles." But a moment later, Elerinn remembers what Alkali suggested at the last fork in the road and asks his raven Qamaro to fly up and look for a large, unusual tree and tell which way to go. The gnome smiles at Andrath and says: "You have climbed enough trees for today, I guess."
Elerinn doesn't notice Bralin wondering if all arcane casters have an attention span as short as his. Indeed, the gnome seems distracted easily, looking everywhere around him. He was interested in the dwarf's orb, but he seems interested in many things and doesn't seem to be able to concentrate very long on one object or subject.
Kedarn d20+5=10 Monday April 26th, 2004 6:58:46 PM

Andrath stops the group at the edge of the clearing and Elerinn sends Qamaro up to the canopy to check the surroundings. The party contemplates what direction to follow when the raven rasps out an alarm call [Qamaro must succeed at a Dex check of DC 17 to avoid being caught in a web]
Three spiders, each the size of a large serving platter, descend from the canopy on silken lines. Their dull brown mottled abdomens blend perfectly into the surrounding tree trunks providing perfect camouflage. They make a strange chittering sound as they drop down, taking the party by surprise.
The first two spiders close on Andrath, while the third spider moves to the rogue's right and threatens Lorth. All three spiders are unsuccessful in their attempts to bite the adventurers.

Andrath starts as the spiders drop from the trees. He drops the pokey stick that he was carrying, and draws his short sword. He swings at spider #3 with the long sword that he was carrying, but is obviously still recovering from the surprise [OOC: hit AC12, not likely]. He calls out, "Spiders are attacking from the trees! Elerinn d20+2=8 2d4(3+4)+2=9 Tuesday April 27th, 2004 9:11:39 AM
When Qamaro rasps out an alarm, Elerinn looks up and sees his faithfull familiar trapped inside a large spider's web. Before he can help the raven in any way, three large spiders descend and attack Andrath and Lorth.
Elerinn tries to remember the last time the group encountered spiders like this. Immediatly, the image of the small cave inside the dangerous cliff invades the gnome's mind and the memory of that dangerous height makes him feel dizzy.
Nevertheless, the gnome acts, moving his hands in swift movements and exclaming arcane words. Two bolts of energy spring fort from his hands and hit one of the spiders near Andrath.

Smoke and an acrid smell come from the edge of the clearing as the carrot-topped gnome's magic strikes true. Alkali sends Karee up to check on the striken Quamaro, but the hawk must also take care to avoid becoming entangled (Karee must beat DC 17). A small spider (S6)at the edge of the web moves along the perimeter, it's curiousity piqued by the stuggling raven.
Lorth advances, but his target (S1) strikes out with it's venomous bite (Hit AC 16, for 6 dmg, DC 14 vs poison or loose 3 Str). Enraged by pain, the severely wounded spider (S2) savages Andrath (Hit AC 20 for 4 dmg, DC vs poison or loose 3 Str.) but it's partner (S3) misses the elf.
As Kedarn moves to support Andrath, Cassandra picks up a heavy fallen branch to use as a club, and prepares to defend herself. She moves up between Elerinn and Alkali, behind Cadmar.
Bralin is first into the clearing, entering at 7 o'clock. For the briefest of moments the fighter is in shadow, as another spider (S4) drops, narrowly missing the dwarf with it's bite.
The air is filled with a clicking sound.

Just as the gnome wants to start targetting one missile on both his companion's attackers, he can see a small spider showing interest in his unfortunate familiar. Elerinn can feel the bird's fear through the empathic link and the gnome immediatly acts.

Andrath once again fends off an attack from the spider facing him (S3) which may have been distracted when Cadmar pressed forward with his manouevers [S3 missed with a 16 but fort save vs DC 14 or take -2 secondary Str].

Elerinn laughs in triumph when the small spider, that was about to eat his familiar, falls down from the dangerous web. "Hold on there, Qamaro!", the gnome says and looks up to make sure there aren't any other insects to threaten the bird.
If he doesn't see any other spider threatening Qamaro, Elerinn looks at the other spider that are still alive. Andrath hits the spider in front of him and it seems this spider is slain, as well. Just as the larger, more dangerous looking spider attacks Kedarn, Elerinn targets the two smaller arachnids facing Lorth and Bralin with two new Magic Missiles, again. "If we defeat the two little spiders, we can team up on that big one", Elerinn thinks, while hoping Wardd will be on the Swords of Light's side.

The longsword weilding rogue does certain damage to the spider he is flanking, but it is the swing of the shortsword that reduces it to a bloody mass.
With two well timed missiles of sufficient power, Elerinn manages to dispatch his targets, leaving Lorth to poke at the charred remains of his assailant.
Surrounded, the monstrous spider takes significant blows from the axe weilding black dwarf, the wiry elven cleric, and the diminuative halfling. Sorely wounded, with missing limbs, and trailing entrails, it summons just enough strength and lunges at Kedarn (Hit AC 18, for 6 dmg, DC 16 or take -3 Str.) The elf steps back from the large corpse, wipes his two blades on the grass, and says, "Swords of Light indeed! We will probably be known as the Cinnamon Valley exterminators!" He quickly scans the area around the spider clearing for any more of the multi-legged beasts.
When he notices the raven caught up in the webs, he asks Elerinn, "Do you have any way to help your bird down from there? If not, I can try to climb up and cut him down."

Cadmar notices that at least three people are suffering from poison. The ranger walks up to Andrath and offers to have a look at his wounds. If he agrees Cadmar first opens up the wound a little bit with his dagger to drain the poison [Using Heal to treat poison, Take10, result is 16]. Then he dresses up the injuries [Lay on Hands cures 4 points of damage].

[Ready action - atk ac13 for 8 hp if another spider shows up]
Satisfied the danger is indeed passed, Bralin moves to assist the injured cleric. "Sit," he instructs Kedarn.
He casts a spell on Kedarn to help fight off the poison, [Resistance] taps him twice with his healing wand, [15 hp healed] pulls out his healers kit, and tends to the man's poisoned arm. [Heal check for each bite, 12 and 11].
Bralin ignores his own bite, trusting his dwarven blood to deal with whatever venom the spider injected.
Elerinn Friday April 30th, 2004 6:45:01 PM
When the last, larger spider is defeated by the combined efforts of the Swords of Light, Elerinn thanks Wardd and is glad everyone made the fight alive, again. When Andrath asks him about the raven Qamaro, Elerinn answers he doesn't have any means of getting the bird down. "I would be gratefull if you could help him." After reassuring the frightened familiar, asks if anyone is allright and shrugs when Lorth thanks him. "We all did what we could and I'm glad we are all alive to tell the story."

Kedarn pulls himself out from under the giant spider then sits up and looks around. Hearing Bralin Kedarn just sits still and lets Bralin work. When Bralin is finished Kedanr will tell everyone "Good work in dispatching the spider quickly and efficiently." Jokenly Kedarn asks "Do I have a sign on me saying attack me? I seem to be drawing the most potent of the foes in the last couple of fights, first the dire wolf now the giant spider. Someone must not like me."
DM Bob & Carla Sunday May 2nd, 2004 6:35:54 PM
The party dispatches the large spider. The weary combatants hastily scan the area for more dangers. When it is obvious that no more aggressors are close by, they begin tending their wounds. Qamaro remains firmly stuck in the webs above, despite the efforts of Karee, who perches protectively nearby, eyes gleaming and wings held out to make it appear larger.
Cassandra drops her make-shift weapon, and moves to assist Cadmar as he treats Andrath's wounds. The witch then moves over to assist Bralin.
Andrath scans the canopies above, trying to determine the best route to reach the struggling raven. In doing so he notes two cigar shaped bundles hanging from the webs above. Each appears to be tightly wrapped in silken threads.
Andrath Monday May 3rd, 2004 12:52:10 AM
[OOC: If Andrath takes 10, his climb check is 19. He will take 10 for all climbing efforts.]
Andrath carefully figures out a way to climb the nearest tree, and try to reach the two bundles and the trapped bird. He says, "I suggest you call Karee down from there, so he doesn't get caught as well."
Once he figures the best way to climb, he takes his time, trying to avoid the webbing as much as possible. He carries his dagger in his mouth and his silk rope slung over his shoulder. When he manages to cut his way to Qamaro, the elf will carefully cut the web strands away from the bird, and say, "Don't try to fly yet. Let me cut you out of this, and lower you to the ground. Then we can take our time cleaning these sticky strands off of you, and make sure that you are safely free." Once the bird is cut free, Andrath will use his rope to lower the bird to the ground.
When he reaches the two wrapped bundles, he will carefully examine them for signs of life, cutting into them a little to see if anything is alive. If there is nothing alive in them, he will cut them down. Otherwise, he will tie the bundle off as best he can, then get the party to lower it down.
Cadmar Monday May 3rd, 2004 8:12:36 AM
Cadmar goes in his mind through the perils the party has faced so far. This is one tough neighborhood. Definitely not a place I would choose to live in. I wonder what our man will be like.
The ranger stands under the tree and watches while Andrath does the climbing. Cadmar assists in lowering Quamaro and the bundles to the ground.
"Shall we open these up?"
Lorth Monday May 3rd, 2004 9:14:55 AM
Lorth waits for his friends to complete their tasks at hand. After Andrath lowers the bundles to the ground, he gives them a sidelong look, not sure if he really wants to know whats in them...
Bralin d20+4=21 d20+5=11 Monday May 3rd, 2004 10:38:39 AM
Upon healing the cleric, Bralin looks around.
The foe are dispatched, and his comrades are concentrating on the bundles in the web. A good time to attack.
The dwarf paces around the circumfrence of the clearing, guarding against that possibility.

Elerinn Monday May 3rd, 2004 11:29:03 AM
Elerinn feels his familiar is very frightened and hopes Andrath is able to release the raven from the dangerous webs. The gnome also watches how Andrath lowers the two bundles and realizes Qamaro or someone else could have been in there.
Alkali Monday May 3rd, 2004 6:38:32 PM
Alkali calls Karee down and gives the raven a pat for a job well done. He looks closely at the bundles hoping not to find people.
DM Bob & Carla Monday May 3rd, 2004 11:24:04 PM
Safely negotiating the trees and avoiding any entanglements, Andrath is able to cut out the section of web containing the struggling Qamaro. The unhappy raven is then carefully lowered to the ground. A much relieved Elerinn proceeds to liberate the indignant familiar from it's remaining bonds, while Karee perches comfortably on Alkali's shoulder, beady eyes taking in the proceedings.
After cutting a little into the bundles, Andrath knows that whatever is inside is no longer alive. They thump heavily as they land on the ground. One of the cigar shaped bundles splits open from the impact. Inside is a desiccated humanoid form, it's race and sex unrecognizable.
Cadmar and Lorth approach the bundles warily while Bralin keeps vigil on the perimeter of the clearing.
Kedarn Tuesday May 4th, 2004 1:26:56 AM
Kedarn will move over to help Cadmar and Lorth with the two bodies.
"Gargul watch over these travellers during their time of passing." Kedarn whispers quietly over the two bodies.
Cadmar Tuesday May 4th, 2004 2:54:19 AM
"Seems that we'll be bearing grim news to many families in Jarlswolf... the carpenters, and now these poor souls... I guess we should check to see if there is anything we can identify them by and then give them a quick but proper burial?"
Lorth Tuesday May 4th, 2004 9:29:39 AM
Lorth nods his agreement to Cadmar.
Bralin Tuesday May 4th, 2004 11:13:20 AM
As he continues to patrol the perimeter, Bralin adds on to Cadmar's suggestion.
"Mayhap the dead's possessions will aid us on our quest."
Elerinn Tuesday May 4th, 2004 12:01:38 PM
Elerinn sincerely thanks Andrath for saving his familiar from the web and strokes Qamaro to reassure the frightened bird. When one of the cigar shaped bundles falls down and displays a rotting corpse inside, Elerinn looks away. He agrees with Cadmar to give the two corpses a proper burial. When the dwarf Bralin suggest to search the death's belongings for anything usefull, the gnome says: "I don't think I could use any of their items without thinking where they came from. But if you don't have such problems, do whatever you wish, Bralin."
Alkali Tuesday May 4th, 2004 8:17:34 PM
Alkali kneels down and whispers a pair of prayers. One for the dead and one for the fate of his group.
Andrath Tuesday May 4th, 2004 8:23:31 PM
Andrath moves up to the two bundles, and carefully cuts them open with his longsword, and then pries them open with his pokey-stick, watching for any young spiders that might emerge. Assuming that no little spiders come out, the elven rogue cuts the silk from around the bodies, and then carefully searches the contents of the cocoons, and the cocoons themselves, in case something has fallen in the bottom of the silk casing. He will take his time in his searching. [OOC: Taking 20 on the search gives a check of 31.]
DM Bob & Carla Tuesday May 4th, 2004 10:45:25 PM
As Kedarn and Alkali pray over the bodies of the two unfortunates, Andrath searches them for identification and any other useful items. The corpses are tough and leathery, without the normal aroma of death. Their withered appearance makes it clear that their bodily fluids have been drained.
Neither corpse has anything by which to identify it. The first wears a chain shirt that glistens brightly as the cocoon is unwrapped. A leather purse lies under the body. The second body wears badly damaged leather armour. A pendant made of bone lies beneath the armor, attached to a leather strap encircling it's neck. A dagger remains sheathed and strapped to a leg.
Bralin keeps an eye on the perimeter while Cadmar , Lorth and Kedarn bury the bodies in the soft earth.
Andrath Tuesday May 4th, 2004 11:27:55 PM
Before the others bury the body, Andrath removes the chain shirt, the leather purse, the bone pendant and the dagger and sheath. He asks the rest of the party, "I guess we have no way of knowing who these belong to, do you?" Then he will spread the items out on the ground, and ask, "Can anyone detect for magic on these? We should probably know if there is magic on any of them, before we put them away."
Kedarn Wednesday May 5th, 2004 1:18:44 AM
Kedarn casts Detect Magic on the items found. After which Kedarn will say "lets just pack the items up and move on to find the tree."
Cadmar Wednesday May 5th, 2004 7:47:47 AM
"While you are at it we might as well check the other stuff for magic, too."
Cadmar suggests that the two vials of syropy liquid, necklace with gems, moonstone, and masterwork arrows should be added to the pile for examination. Then the ranger adds new items to the list.
"I can't help the feeling that we are being watched - and judged. I feel uneasy taking items from the bodies just like that. May Gargul be merciful on these poor souls, for they died a horrible death."
Lorth Wednesday May 5th, 2004 8:43:57 AM
Lorth helps bury the bodies and offers a pray to Gargul for them. He then keeps an eye out on the surrounding area.
Elerinn Wednesday May 5th, 2004 9:29:37 AM
Elerinn watches Kedarn as he examines the items to see if they might be magical. Like Cadmar, he feels unsure about taking items from the dead, even if it's necessary to identify the two corpses. After the two corpses has been honorfully buried, Elerinn asks Andrath: "While you were up there in that tree, did you see which way we are supposed to go now to reach that large tree? I think we should move on, we can do nothing for these poor souls anymore."
Bralin Wednesday May 5th, 2004 9:47:23 AM
Andrath and Kedarn are handling matters. The dwarf continues his patrol.
As he marches, he addresses the concerns of Cadmar and Elerrin. "Were I to perish, would ye bury my healing wand with me? Tis of no use to me, but ye may require it sorely."
He continues. "We return these bodies to the Earth (Bralin obviously capatilizes the word), fulfilling our obligations as noble beings of the Wold. The tools they used may aid our quest. Should we find kin with a claim, we may return the tools unto them. Fear not, comrades. We act nobly."
Alkali Wednesday May 5th, 2004 9:16:03 PM
Alkali helps with the burial and then sits down while everyone prepares again for the march. Karee attempts to fly into the sky, but Alkali stops him. "No more flying in here... not with the spiders anyway."
DM Bob & Carla Wednesday May 5th, 2004 9:26:01 PM
Andrath and Cadmar lay out the items they have recovered since leaving Jarlswolf and Kedarn casts his spell. The cleric of Gargul observes a glowing aura from the arrows, the chain shirt, the bone pendant, and the dagger. The two vials of syrupy liquid do not detect as magic, nor do the gems or the necklace. Alkali and Elerinn get their first good look at the two vials. [Knowledge Arcana vs DC 12 to recognize the contents]
A number of the party express some concern and uneasiness about using items salvaged from the corpses of innocents, but Bralin's argument strikes home for others.
After the spoils are secured in various packs, Andrath takes up his now familiar position and leads the party towards the south east and the large tree he had spotted earlier.
The warm air grows more humid the further they press on. The trees, mainly cypress and cedars, block out most of the daylight and hang heavy with mosses, a variety of epiphtic plants grow from their branches. Vines climb up from the forest floor and engulf the weaker trees, killing some of them. The air is heavy with the smell of rotting vegetation.
Cadmar Thursday May 6th, 2004 6:25:43 AM
As his friends examine the items Cadmar takes notes on which of them turn out to be magical.
The ranger looks at Cassandra. The witch is taking the journey much better than he feared she would. In fact, she seems to take it better than Cadmar does. The ranger tries to find something comforting to say, but can't think of anything that would sound sincere. So he just says matter of factly: "It's not far. Maybe we'll reach our destination before dusk."
He does not mention the doubts that have been disturbing his sleep for the previous few evenings. What if the tree dwelling turns out to be abandoned? What if the wild man can't help Cassandra?...
Lorth Thursday May 6th, 2004 8:06:26 AM
Lorth takes up his position in the line, he too hopes they will reach their destination this day.
Bralin d20+6=8 d20+6=22 Thursday May 6th, 2004 9:08:43 AM
After the detections are completed, Bralin walks over, and states, "Mayhap I can help with the stones.
The dwarf looks at the moonstone (Appraise 8) and the necklace (Appraise 22) in an attempt to judge their value.
Afterwards, he falls back to the end of the line, prepared for another day of marching.
Elerinn d20+7=27 Thursday May 6th, 2004 7:11:04 PM
Elerinn is easily convinced by Barak's wise words and doesn't make any further objections to taking the corpses items. The gnome takes a good look at the two vials and is able to identify their contents.
As the Swords of Ligh advance deeper into the swamp, Elerinn notices his friend Cadmar's concern. He has had the same doubts for the last couple of days, but tries to remain hopefull. When the air grows more and more uncomfortable, however, Elerinn says: "To be honest, I hate this swamp. Too warm, too wet, smelly and too much freaky arachnids, to my liking. I hope we find the guy who can help us soon, so we can go back to more pleasant places."
Since the beginning of his adventures with this group, Elerinn hasn't been irritated like this.
Kedarn d20+5=15 d20+5=12 Thursday May 6th, 2004 7:32:04 PM
"Bralin has a very good advice on the items" Kedarn tells the others. Kedarn will move along with the others as we march through the swamp keeping an eye out for anymore problems.

Alkali picks up one of the bottles and examines them. "Hm... wonder if they taste any good..."
Alkali will continue to walk foward using a stick as a guide until further trouble.
Andrath d20+10=13 d20+11=20 d20+15=33 Thursday May 6th, 2004 11:26:08 PM
As before, Andrath keeps moving forward, carefully checking the ground in front as he travels. [OOC: Listen 13, Search 20, Spot 33]
DM Bob & Carla Friday May 7th, 2004 7:27:58 AM
Elerinn and Alkali both reach the same conclusion, that the vials contain alchemical fire, as for the taste, well...
Bralin re-examines the moonstone and necklace and confirms that the necklace is worth about 30 gp. Andrath's earlier estimate of 70 gp. for the moonstone remains unchallenged.
The party follows behind their scout, who leads them slowly but confidently through the forested swamp. The warmth and humidity become uncomfortable for some in the party, and concerns about Cassandra's discomfort weigh heavily on the minds of Cadmar and Elerinn.
As morning turns to afternoon, Andrath spots a huge grey tree trunk through the vegetation.
Lorth Friday May 7th, 2004 7:56:06 AM
Lorth looks at Elerinn, when he speaks out. So unlike our quite gnome, he thinks. This swamp must really bother him. Lorth gives him a quick smile, and tries to be reassuring, "I'm sure we won't have to stay much longer, we must be nearing the tree by now."
Bralin Friday May 7th, 2004 9:43:55 AM
Bralin follows in the rear, checking the back trail and doing his level best to ignore the stickiness of the air.
He cannot help but silently agree with the gnome. The very air sweats, totally at odds with the cool dryness of a comforting cave.
Finally, the tree they seek is before them. Now, perhaps, they reach the meat of their quest.
Kedarn d20+5=13 Friday May 7th, 2004 4:07:26 PM
Kedarn moves up to Cassandra then tells her "we will see you taken care of Cassandra."
Kedarn then starts to look around to see if there is anyone around watching the group.

After Lorth's remark has slightly made Elerinn somewhat less annoyed, he tries to continue without complaining.
Suddenly, Andrath spots the large tree and Elerinn is filled with relief. He hopes the man they seek is able to help Cassandra, for he is the only option left. Remembering the feral man, Elerinn decides to be on his guard. After spiders almost ate his familiar today, he doesn't want to be surprised, again.

Cadmar Sunday May 9th, 2004 2:47:31 PM
The sloshing of water in his boots and the drying up mud on his back is driving the ranger nuts. Every time Cadmar looks down on his dirty chain and soiled cloak his thoughts return to his unfortunate dip. Being lost in dark thoughts he nearly walks into Lorth's back when the paladin stops after sighting the tree.
Andrath Sunday May 9th, 2004 6:31:30 PM
Not being very charismatic, nor relating very well to nature, Andrath steps back and waits for the more charismatic, more nature-relating members of the party to step up.
