Denholm's Tree

DM Bob and Carla
Sunday May 9th, 2004 11:43:57 PM

The tree is unlike any growing thing the adventurers have ever seen before. The entire party could hold hands and try to encircle it, and still they could not span it's girth. The trunk shoots straight up, as if reaching for the heavens. Indeed, it towers far above the forest canopy, it's top-most branches enshrouded by low lying clouds. Underneath, there is a small clearing as if little could grow in the ground darkened by the great tree's shade. For such an ancient tree, the grey bark is stangely smooth, and flawless. However, heavy mosses hang from the branches and vines with exotic green and puple flowers entwine themselves about the branches and trunk drawing life, it seems, from the very air. The heady scent of perfume from the flowers is intoxicating.

A stoic Bralin and long suffering Cadmar bear their discomforts wordlessly while Lorth and Elerinn remain alert to surprises as the group approaches the great tree. Andrath and Alkali watch the others advance, and Kedarn offers support to Cassandra.

The quiet is broken only by the humming of insects, and the calling of birds that make the forest their home. There are no signs of habitation discernable to those who look.

Cadmar
Monday May 10th, 2004 9:25:56 AM

Cadmar suppreses the urge to shout out "hello".

"Well, I guess it's time to look around for a little bit."

Cadmar takes three steps closer to the tree, spreads his open arms, and says in a firm tone of voice carefully choosing his words:

"We come looking for help. We seek not to disturb the creatures of the land, only to partake in your wisdom and possibly use it to amend the ill fate that has befallen one of us. Will you please listen to our plea?" [Take 10 on Diplomacy - 21]

The ranger feels as if he was addressing the tree or the forest itself. It is at times like this that Garrard is sorely missed.

If there is no response Cadmar suggests circling the tree looking for any signs of encampment or tracks [Take 20 on Search - 23].

Elerinn
Monday May 10th, 2004 9:31:00 AM

Elerinn follows Cadmar as he moves over to the large tree. He listens to his companion as he adresses the man who might be able to help and remains quiet when the ranger is finished.
The sorcerer remains quiet, for the words of his friends are carefully chosen and sufficient.

Lorth
Monday May 10th, 2004 10:19:34 AM

Lorth also remains quiet and puts his weapons and shield away, so as not to look threatening.

Bralin
Monday May 10th, 2004 1:12:00 PM

A dead end? Mayhap.

Bralin's gaze is drawn to the tree. An impressive structure.

Cadmar's speech cuts the dwarf's inspection short, and he quickly returns to scanning the surrounding area for possible danger.

Kedarn
Monday May 10th, 2004 7:26:11 PM

Kedarn looks around the small clearing while keeping Cassandra calm.

The party gathers under the the canopy of this massive sentinal of the forest. Cadmar steps forward and speaks out for the group but there is no response. He begins to search the clearing when something hard slams into him and he is suddenly jerked off the ground. He can feel the air being squeezed from his body as his feet pedal above the ground. [11 hp damage]

Elerinn sees the vine slam into Cadmar from above and recoil with its prey. Cadmar hangs, his feet some two feet off the ground.

Bralin, Kedarn, Andrath, and Alkali each feel tugging on their legs as the shrubs near the outside of the small clearing come to life in a writhing mass of tendrils [Reflex save vs DC 13 or be entangled]

Kedarn  d20+4=9
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 5:41:00 AM

Kedarn tries to move away from the tendrils entangle his legs but is unable to (failed save.)

Kedarn will call out "We are looking for Denholm. Grynntym Deeproot told us that we might find Denholm here as we are in need of his assistance."

Tuesday May 11th, 2004 5:58:00 AM

Cadmar, his voice cut off by the vine, realizes that he can last perhaps ten seconds in the embrace of the foe. He struggles in panic, desperately trying to free himself, and with growing terror becomes aware that the embrace is as strong as steel bonds and he has almost no chance to escape it by himself [check to escape grapple: 8].

Lorth
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 7:54:08 AM

Lorth looks around startled and unsure of what to do. He decides to approach his friends that are being entangled near the edge of the clearing to try and help pull them out. Although he is careful not to get to close, so he doesn't get entangled himself.

Elerinn  d4+1=4 d4+1=5
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 9:40:21 AM

Elerinn sees Cadmar next to him being pulled up by a long vine and he is paralyzes for a moment. Again, danger comes from above.

After his initial shock, Elerinn starts casting a spell and after a moment he shoots two Magic Missiles from his hands. The sorcerer targets the two vines that hold Kedarn and Cadmar, hoping the plants will release his companions from their firm grip.

OOC: I'm not being very creative: another Magic Missile spell.
Vine holding Cadmar: 4 damage
Vine holding Kedarn: 5 damage

Bralin  d20=1 d20+4=10
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 9:56:33 AM

Bralin barely even moves as the shrubbery comes to life and wraps around his legs.
[Reflex check 1]
He tries to rip free of the plants, but doesn't have very good footing.
[Strength check 10]

Berating himself for not paying enough attention, the dwarf pulls his axe...

Andrath (AC 19, 24 hp, -3 Str
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 11:21:44 PM

[OOC: Bob/Carla, I am having problems with the Woldian website, and I cannot get the dice roller to work for me, so I will be rolling using my dice at home, and posting the results. If this will not work for you, then please make my rolls for me until the problem is fixed.]

[OOC: rolled a natural 20 for the entangle reflex save, so result is total of 28]

Andrath easily dodges the grasping shrubs, and calls out to the group, "Be careful what we do here! We are asking for help, and we are attacking? Cadmar, Elerinn, Bralin, that vine may well be some sort of mindless protection, and before we start chopping, hacking and burning, we should be sure that we are actually under attack." He waits to see if there is any response to the party's entreaties to the being that resides in the Wyrmsfut.

Wednesday May 12th, 2004 12:03:50 AM

Bralin, Alkali and Kedarn are held captive by the vegetation at the edge of the clearing and are unable to come to Cadmar's defence. As Lorth looks on, stunned by the sudden turn of events Andrath calls out a warning to the group. The gnome is too fast and lets loose two bursts of energy, targetting the vine that holds Cadmar and the plants that have ensnared the party's leader.

The sorcerer's missile only seems to aggravate the situation as the vine that constricts the paladin squeezes tighter. Cadmar's eyes seem to bulge as the murderous embrace of the plant continues [continued grapple DC 15 for 12 hp].

A strangled cry escapes from behind Cassandra's mask.

Anyone making a spot check of DC 10 will notice the approach of a large brown bear as it shambles towards the party and rears up on it's hind legs.

Lorth
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 7:41:47 AM

Lorth opens his backpack and fishes out his rope, he then throws one end to Bralin and tries to help pull him out.
(I am hoping this gives him a +2 to his strength check to break free)

OOC: Lorth needs to make a strength check (DC 10 to aid another - see PHB p. 65)

Bralin (ac18)  d20+4=24 d20+5=10
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 8:58:18 AM

Bralin grabs the offered rope, and rips free of the offending plant life
[Strength check 24, nat 20]

"Bear!" he cries, spotting the creature.
[Spot 10]
"You help Cadmar!"

The dwarf moves to cut off the bear from the rest of the group. Axe at the ready, he waits for the ursine's attack. It is only due to Andrath's warning that he doesn't start "chopping, hacking, and burning" immediately. But he's not waiting much longer.

Elerinn
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 3:58:07 PM

When Elerinn sees his friend Cadmar being constricted even more, he stops in shock. The gnome listens to Andrath's wise advice and feels guilty because of his impulsiveness.

Although he realizes this will probably help little, Elerinn calls out: "I'm sorry, I was only protecting my friend Cadmar and Kedarn. Please, we come to seek your wise counsil and mean no harm!"

Cadmar AC15 Hp 2(25)  d20+2=17 d20+6=13
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 5:14:22 PM

Cadmar struggles, but in vain. The embrace of the plant is just too strong for him to overcome.

[Grapple check 17: failed. Used 1 hero point to make a reroll and 2 more to boost it up by 4; grapple check 13: failed.]

Kedarn  d20=1
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 6:44:54 PM

Kedarn tries again to break free of the vines. (str check: nat 1)

Alkali  d20=20
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 9:16:40 PM

Alkali looks at the massive tree and is swooped up into the air by vines, caught off guard. While the others struggle and Bralin breaks free, Alkali tries to fight with all of his dimunitive strength. With a stroke of enormus luck, (Natural 20 - 4(size) = 16) he breaks free and rolls away. He quickly gets up and prepares to cast a spell on Cadmar.

OOC: Sorry about the lack of posts, my ISP had "server problems" ... whatever that means.

Andrath (AC19, 24 hp, -3 Str)
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 9:46:31 PM

[OOC: It seems to me that Cadmar beat the DC roll by the vine, so I am pretty sure that he drops to the ground, and does not take the last bit of damage. Maybe you want to repost?]

[OOC: Assuming that Cadmar is successful in dropping from the vine's grasp, here is what Andrath will do.] Andrath puts his weapons away and steps forward, to stand between the fallen Cadmar and the vine. He will try to dodge any attack by the vine, but carry out no offensive actions. [OOC: Adjusted AC23] He calls out, to no one in particular, "Forest Lord, please call off your creatures, we come in peace! We need your help; we have a young lady who has been put under a curse, and we have been told that you are the only one who can help. Please hear us out, we are willing to pay with either our money or our service for your help."

DM Bob & Carla  d20+7=13
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 11:09:34 PM

Unsure how to proceed, the adventurer's concentrate on freeing themselves from the ensnaring vegetation. Lorth tosses a rope to Bralin who pulls himself free from the writhing plants. Likewise, Alkali also breaks free. Kedarn is not so lucky.

The vine constricts across Cadmar's chest and the paladin knows he has but one chance to free himself. In desperation he heaves against the vine. Breaking free he falls to the ground.

[OOC: Cadmar's first grapple check was successful, no hero points required and 12 hp damage avoided]

Andrath steps over the prone paladin and speaks out to the clearing, offering peace and requesting aid. Elerinn voices his apologies for earlier transgressions and hopes their words will be listened to.

Again the vine lashes out, this time at the rogue who easily dodges the clumsy attack. Bralin makes ready to swing his axe at the advancing bear when much to his astonishment the animal undergoes an amazing transition before his eyes. As it rises to tower over him, the bear morphs into something he has never seen before.

With a head that would reach the ceiling of most manor halls, and a body almost as wide, the creature is an impressive sight. Great bushy eyebrows like some beast's fur overtop warm brown eyes as big as a man's fists. Ears pointed like an elf's but tufted like some wild cat's poke through a shaggy brown mane. But more than anything, what stands out are the huge hands, like hams, with thick, strong fingers.

The creature wraps one of these massive hands around Bralin's axe and removes it from him, firmly, but gently. Deliberate strides bring him to the tree. He lays a great hand on the vine, prompting a rapid retreat by the thing into the upper canopy with much rustling of leaves and scraping of bark on bark. The plants growing at the edge of the clearing release their hold on the cleric and are still.

For a moment the only sound that can be heard other than breathing is the sound of Cassandra growling and huffing beneath the mask. She continues until someone speaks her name.

And then a deep rumbling sound grows in volume. The 'Swords of Light' can feel it inside their chests, like a drum. It takes a moment before they realize that they are being addressed by the creature, and then as if by magic they understand the words inside their minds, separate from the rumbling but somehow connected...

"The plant does not do my bidding, but it does know my strength. Nor is it evil, it simply is what it is...no more evil than the falcon that kills the dove." The rumbling does not stop. "I am called Denholm by the one that sent you. I would have met you sooner but ... things ... have kept me occupied."

You do not feel as if your minds have been probed, but rather filled by the thoughts of the creature. A jumble of images flicker through your consciousness as he speaks, too rapid to make much sense, the Culverwood, mountains, Jarlswolf and the fallen stones near Witchspawn, and other images you cannot begin to recognize.

Cadmar hp 14(25)
Thursday May 13th, 2004 3:41:25 AM

There are wheezing sounds as Cadmar, with his hands around his chest, catches his breath. Then the ranger crawls away from the tree and out of reach of the vine. There he falls prone and curls up in a ball. His shaking shouders betray that the young man is quietly crying.

Lorth
Thursday May 13th, 2004 8:10:16 AM

Lorth moves to help Cadmar regain his footing, then helps him get some distance from the vine.

When Cadmar curls up into a ball, Lorth touches him on the shoulder and transfers the warmth of healing into his body.
(Lay on hands for 9)

Elerinn
Thursday May 13th, 2004 12:04:24 PM

When the unusual man, Denholm, adresses Elerinn and his companions with some sort of telepathic ability, the gnome is unsure what do to.
For a moment, he is stunned by the power the man seems to posses and the vivid images he projects into his mind.

After this moment of awe, he bows his head in respect, and says: "Hello, Sir Denholm. I thank you for your help. That...plant almost killed my friend Cadmar.
Our travel towards Wyrmsfut has been long and hard and I hope you can help poor Cassandra. She accidently donned a cursed mask and isn't able to get it off anymore. Please, is there any way you can help her?"

Bralin
Thursday May 13th, 2004 3:34:51 PM

Bralin has fought against giants, but not by himself. And, truth be told, the giants usually won. However, the removal of his axe is unprecendented, and the dwarf is unsure on how to respond.

He glances back at the gasping Cadmar, who has again succeeded in attracting Gargul's eye.

Back to business. Bralin returns to regard the giant of a man standing before him.

"Shall ye return my axe?" he asks sourly.

Alkali
Thursday May 13th, 2004 8:01:23 PM

Visions and dreams pass through Alkali's mind as he looks at the gigantic man. "Wow... that's a neat trick... I suppose you could help us with our prediciment with poor Cassandra? We would be willing to provide any help to further that cause. " Alkali points at Cassandra.

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday May 13th, 2004 11:13:46 PM

Denholm bends down and hands the axe back to Bralin without a word. Elerinn and Alkali explain the circumstances by which they have come to Denholm while Lorth tends to the injured Cadmar.

The vibrations deep in your chests continue and Denholm's thoughts carry into your mind.."follow me and we shall see to your friend".

A mighty hand rests on the tree and a crack in the bark that was not there moments before, opens in front of you. "It will be safer in my home, than outside in Wyrmsfut. You need rest."

Andrath (-3 Str)
Thursday May 13th, 2004 11:57:13 PM

Andrath says to their large host, "Thank you for your hospitality, Sir. I have heard of living on trees, but never inside one." He follows after Denholm, a little uncertain about entering into a tree for rest.

He asks Kedarn quietly, "I am still hurting from the spider's poison. If we get a good night's rest tonight, is there something that you can do to help me?" He is careful to make sure that Cassandra cannot hear him refer to the eight-legged creatures that they fought earlier in the day.

Lorth
Friday May 14th, 2004 7:56:15 AM

Lorth attempts to help Cadmar to his feet. "Try and get up, we are moving inside.", he says quietly.

Bralin
Friday May 14th, 2004 9:09:32 AM

Also silent, Bralin takes his axe and stows it.

The dwarf walks into the tree without hesitation.

Cadmar 23(25)
Friday May 14th, 2004 12:59:50 PM

The shock eventually wears off and, after a moment, Cadmar calms down enough to sit up. The ranger wipes his face with his sleeve, leaving dirty smudges of mud on it.

"Thank you for healing, I think I am all right now" he says in a voice that still shakes a little bit.

Cadmar stands up and heads for the tree house. As he passes under the assasin vine he does not dare to look up.

Kedarn
Friday May 14th, 2004 6:11:27 PM

Kedarn moves into the tree house with the others then looks aroudn once inside.

Elerinn
Friday May 14th, 2004 6:55:58 PM

Elerinn thanks Denholm a second time, this time for his hospitality and looks at the crack inside the tree.
After asking Cadmar if he is allright now, he enters the tree, unsure about what to expect.

Alkali
Saturday May 15th, 2004 12:05:45 AM

Alkali walks into the tree guiding Cassandra along the way.

DM Bob and Carla
Sunday May 16th, 2004 10:51:58 PM

It takes a while for the eyes of some to adjust to the darkness inside the tree. There is a welcome coolness, compared to the heat and humidity of the Wymsfut swamp. A half dozen broad steps lead down to a large comfortable room floored with a thick mat of woven rushes. The walls all around are covered with shelves lined with a multitude of objects collected over a long life. Books and piles of scrolls share space with a collection of mortars, pestles, wooden bowls, glass jars, and metal pots. Complex machines, rocks, a jumble of dried roots in unusual forms, old wood with odd growth, dried fungi, leather boxes, and a bank of drawers of every size, some of them no larger than a finger, and others big enough for a barrel. Underneath the shelves, and almost all around the room is a very wide circular bench that seems to be a very part of the tree.

Overhead the high ceiling is obscured by bunches of dried flowers, herbs, and branches tied up with string and hung upside down to dry. The air is pungent with the many clean fragrances. An old chandelier overhead illuminates the space with a faint greenish light emanating from some phosphorescent growth that has found a home in the candle brackets. Two enormous tables share prominence in the center of the room. One contains a set of scales and some implements for measuring, as well as beakers, and bottles containing a rainbow of different fluids. There are small, piles of different colored soils, each on their own square of parchment. The other table is flanked by two wide benches. At the head is a huge chair.

Denholm opens some drawers and goes about placing food on the second table. The rumbling vibrations continue and a message is sent, "you must eat, and rest. Restore yourselves here, where it is safe. I have other business to attend to, but I shall return. I will hear your questions then."

Wooden platters on the table hold the bounty of the forest. There is a generous selection of fruits, nuts, and seeds, a cold, but savory pie of eggs and mushrooms, a pitcher of dandelion and burdock beer, and another of cool spring water.

The large man nods to the party, "you are safe here", then turns to depart. There is just enough time to see a large cat with spotted reddish-brown coat, tufted ears, and short tail bound from the entrance into the clearing, before the opening seals itself up.

Cassandra
Sunday May 16th, 2004 10:54:49 PM

Cassandra lets herself be guided by Alkali. Once inside the tree, she sinks wearily onto the wide seat encircling the room.

Andrath (-3 Str)
Sunday May 16th, 2004 11:59:49 PM

Andrath's eyes adapt quickly to the low level of lighting inside the tree. When their host sets the table, the rogue takes a seat and selects a piece of fruit. Pouring from one of the jugs, he mumurs "can't say I've ever had dandelion and burdock beer."

Lorth
Monday May 17th, 2004 9:20:12 AM

Lorth takes a seat at the table, and strips off his armor, glad to be somewhere safe. He relaxes a bit in his chair, and takes a very small glass of the beer, to sample it.

Elerinn
Monday May 17th, 2004 9:52:09 AM

Elerinn takes a small piece of the cold pie and sits down in one of the chairs. He looks around, puzzled. This whole situation seems somewhat surreal to him and he decides to do nothing but observe the wonderfull underground world he just entered.

Kedarn
Monday May 17th, 2004 10:59:25 AM

Kedarn walks over and takes a seat. Once seated Kedarn will make a plate of food that he can snack on while he ponders on what is happening.

Cadmar 23(25)
Monday May 17th, 2004 1:12:06 PM

As soon as their host is gone Cadmar, who didn't have anything to eat since yesterday, sits down at the table and, seeing that his companions aren't especially interested in food, starts to chow down as if there was no tomorrow. There will be nothing but empty bowls and clean plates when Denholm is back.

Once he satisfies his hunger he spreads his cloak on the floor, shakes out the contents of his backpack and pockets, and starts the cleaning. It looks like it is going to take him whole evening.

"Does anyone have any ideas how to get mud out of a chainmail? I would normally put some iron fillings in a sack together with it and give it a good ol' shake, but I don't think I can find them here."

Bralin
Monday May 17th, 2004 3:10:25 PM

The dwarf breathes in the cool comforting air. A touch aromatic, but still much closer to home than the air outside.

As eating is one of Bralin's two favorite pasttimes, he sits down next to Cadmar and matches his bite for bite.

"Take it off and let it dry," he suggests to the man. "Beat the armor on a rock," he looks around, "or large stump."

Alkali
Monday May 17th, 2004 8:30:47 PM

Alkali eats little, enjoying the chance to keep his guard down. Eyeing the dandelion and burdock beer, he sighs and takes the spring water instead. "I get drunk way too easily..."

DM Bob and Carla
Monday May 17th, 2004 10:33:47 PM

The food is flavourful and filling, the cool spring water refreshing, and the beer mellow. With full bellies the party can relax, tend to any remaining wounds, mend gear, and inventory weapons and other supplies. Cadmar works over his chainmail with a modicum of success.

As if attuned to the diurnal rhythme of the Wold, the light from the green chandelier dims perceptibly.

Andrath (-3 Str)  d20+11=25 d20+15=25
Monday May 17th, 2004 10:41:26 PM

Andrath helps himself to another mug, and a handful of nuts. "I have not been able to clear the poison from the...um...from the last attacks, from my system. Can anyone help me?" The rogue looks to his companions, and hopes that someone can aid him.

As the light dims, he is still able to see. The elf finds a comfortable spot on the seat against the wall, lays his pack on it, and reclines with the pack as a pillow. He studies the contents of the shelves and the items suspended from the cieling above his head as he drifts into the trance-like state that passes for sleep for those of his race.

Kedarn  d20+7=25
Tuesday May 18th, 2004 6:55:40 AM

Kedarn walks over to Andrath then starts to check Andrath over and treat anay remaining wounds from the spiders. (heal: 25) Afterwards Kedarn tells Andrath "you will need to get plenty of rest for the rest of the poisoning I believe will take some time to work out of your system. Rest all night with no watch tonight I will cover your watch as best I can as I only need a few hours rest."
With that said Kedarn will mae himself comfortable and get some rest.

Lorth
Tuesday May 18th, 2004 7:52:26 AM

Lorth eats some of his own trail rations then finds a soft spot for his bedroll. He cleans his armor and checks his gear, then lies down and is soon fast asleep.

Cadmar
Tuesday May 18th, 2004 12:11:16 PM

After he is done with his equipment Cadmar finds a place to rest. Since his blanket is still wet the ranger hangs it up to dry. Then he stretches on the bench running along the wall, puts a rolled up cloak under his head, and soon falls asleep.

His rest is not easy, though. Soon Cadmar starts to moan and toss, obviously suffering from a bad dream. His hands go to his throat, as if he was trying to fight off an unseen assailant. Then he starts to talk in his sleep.

"I can't move! Help me! It's too strong! Don't just stand there, it's killing me! Why are you letting me die?!..."

Elerinn
Tuesday May 18th, 2004 2:23:36 PM

Elerinn tries to get some rest, but there is just too much to observe inside Denholm's den. Because he isn't able to fall asleep in this wonderfull place, the gnome hears Cadmar's desperate calls for help.

Elerinn doesn't wake his friend, for he is quite accustomed to nightmares himself and knows Cadmar's bad dream will end eventually.

DM Bob and Carla
Tuesday May 18th, 2004 10:52:46 PM

Inside the cool, dark tree, it is very quiet. Sleep comes easily, and though dreamless for most, Cadmar does succumb to a short nightmare as he passes from one sleep state to another. Andrath and Elerinn let their eyes roam over Denholm's collections. There is a large pot with several rods or wands, a collection of bones, each slightly longer than a finger with runes and symbols inscribed along the sides, a collection of eggs ranging in size from tiny as a pea, to large as a man's head, halved geodes, their small cavities lined with crystals and mineral matter, and of course more scrolls and ancient books.

At what could be gauged as the middle of the night there is a gentle and regular tapping of rain pelting the tree. This sound ceases after several hours. Not long afterwards, a fissure opens up in the area above the shallow stairs, and the bright light of morning streams in as Denholm enters through the tear. With a slight bow he wishes a formal "Goodmorning" in a bass rumble previously heard only in the mind.

Ears twitching, the creature moves over to the table with the lab and piles of dirt. He places a bag gently on the table, then wipes his huge hands on the long brown flared coat he is wearing.

Lorth
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 7:36:45 AM

Lorth wakes up slowly, unacustomed to sleeping in safety he is reluctant to get up. When he finally does rise, he packs up his gear and watches Denholm.

Bralin
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 10:11:06 AM

The dwarf sleeps easily (and loudly).

Bralin's eyes snap awake at Denholm's entrance. He shifts into a sitting position, nods a greeting, and waits.

Elerinn
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 12:52:59 PM

Elerinn silently observes Denholm and wonders how long he has been living inside the Wyrmsfut forest on his own.

When Denholm finally speaks, Elerinn greets him cheerfully, along with his companions.

Kedarn
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 4:31:37 PM

Kedarn cleans up his gear then says to Denholm "Good morning Sir. Thank you for allowing us to rest here."

Cadmar
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 5:16:44 PM

"Good morning to you too, sir!" Cadmar stretches and yawns. Then he goes to check how Cassandra is doing.

The ranger, who has never been particularily patient, sits as if on hot coals. Finally, unable to contain his anxiety any more, he asks: "Would you share your thoughts on that strange mask with us? What did you learn? Is it possible to undo the curse? Can you do that?"

Alkali
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 8:21:16 PM

Alkali wakes up with a great stretch and a yawn. Observing Denholm open the bag, Alkali peers over the table. "So, whatcha got in the bag?"

Andrath
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 11:44:18 PM

The rogue moves over to stand beside Cadmar, and nods his head in agreement. He is curious about Denholm, and what his abilities might be.

Thursday May 20th, 2004 12:13:56 AM

The big fellow acknowledges his guests with another bow. Wrinkling his nose and rubbing at it with one thick finger, Denholm turns to the table and opens the bag to show Alkali what is inside. He takes out a few paper packages and opens one. There is a sample of rich dark earth inside. With a chinking of glass, he extracts a vial. There is a sample of a relatively clear liquid inside. "Something or someone is undermining the health of the Culverwood," he rumbles, "and I aim to find out what."

The creature's musings are interupted by Cadmar's request, then he looks at Cassandra, as if seeing her and the mask for the first time. His bushy eyebrows droop as he shakes his great shaggy head, "come closer, maid, that I may examine the mask." As Cassandra advances timidly, head hanging, Denholm reaches out a great paw of a hand, and gently tips the unfortunate's face up so he can better examine it. "I recognize the grain. It is from a tree that grew in the Wyrmsfut. It was a great tree, and magnificent when it lived," he answers sadly. "It was killed," he adds softly, "'harvested, some would say, for it's magic." With a sigh, the deep rumbling voice continues, "we were able to retrieve most of it, but some pieces were lost." Looking into Cassandra's eyes, he smiles gently, I can not remove it, but I may be able to tell you who can."

With that, he raises his thick hands, and prepares to place them on the mask. "close your eyes," he whispers.

Cadmar
Thursday May 20th, 2004 6:26:53 AM

The ranger's heart sinks. He was hoping that Cassandra will be freed today.

Cadmar starts drumming his fingers on his chest. He would ask more questions, but he sees that Denholm is performing an examination of the mask, so he just waits and hopes that the man will volunteer some information by himself.

Lorth
Thursday May 20th, 2004 8:14:36 AM

Lorth watches and listening carefully waits for anything Denholm would like to share.

Bralin
Thursday May 20th, 2004 9:42:06 AM

The dwarf patiently watches and waits.

Elerinn
Thursday May 20th, 2004 5:24:12 PM

Elerinn is visually dissapointed when Denholm says he isn't able to help Cassandra himself, but watches and waits for him to continue.

Kedarn
Thursday May 20th, 2004 5:58:08 PM

Hearing that Denholm is not able to remove the mask Kedarn lowers his head and shakes it from side to side a couple of times. Kedarn then sits back and awaits the results of Denholm's examination.

Andrath
Thursday May 20th, 2004 10:03:11 PM

Andrath glances quickly over the dirt, then watches as Denholm puts his hands on the mask. He watches curiously, wondering what will happen next.

DM Bob and Carla
Thursday May 20th, 2004 10:04:46 PM

Denholm splays his massive hands and places them so that their entire surface is in contact with the wood of the cursed mask.

Each one of the party senses something brush against his consciousness, like a finger trailing over his skin. It is felt again, only this time solidified into a tendril of thought through which there is a feeling of curiosity then, as if an invisible wall has fallen away, the images come.

A young woman barely out of her teens, he light hair flying out behind her, borne by the wind...this same woman, dancing, and smiling, looking up into the face of a handsome young man...the fair woman, this time with another woman of about the same age, and an older woman, looks of concentration on their faces as they toss herbs and other unknown ingredients into a pot...tears and wails of anguish as the woman is dragged away, the lover turning his back, a look of shame on his handsome face as a dark cloaked figure drops a pouch in his open palm...an image of a lone candle flickering in the darkness of a stone cell...a woman curled up on a cot in one corner...she lifts her head then trembles and collapses limply to expose a back covered in scabs from where she had been whipped mercilessly, and where the intact skin is black and blue from numerous beatings...fire and shadows and a barred door opens, as a shadowy figure, white hair streaming down her shoulders slips out and flees...a wild panicked flight through the dark forest and into the fetid marshes of the Wyrmsfut...a dim room with a smoking cauldron on the hearth, the woman, a wild look in her eyes presses the blade of a sharp knife against her little finger and screams...hair hanging down to her knees as her shoulders hunch and her arms tremble with the effort and the curls of wood shavings pile on the floor...

With a groan, Denholm removes his hands and then covers his own face. Cassandra weaves unsteadily, and the great creature, ears twitching violently cries, "Shedar! Shedar! What have you done?"

Cadmar
Friday May 21st, 2004 3:02:57 AM

A witch betrayed by her beloved, imprisoned, tortured, driven to madness, escapes into the forest of Wyrmsfut and crafts the mask!

Why?

Was it intended to be a tool for her magic? A cursed item made to exact vengeance against her betrayer? Or did she, at that point, hate everyone young and beautiful so much that she strove to deprive them of the joy and love she wasn't destined to find?

Cadmar is silent. The ranger hopes it won't be Shedar Denholm is about to send them to. Cadmar does not know how to cure the kind of wounds the woman has suffered. Cadmar doesn't even know if the woman wants to be healed.

Elerinn
Friday May 21st, 2004 4:41:22 AM

The vivid images, followed by Denholm's emotional outburst, are a bit too much for the young, little gnome and he looks frightened and confused. Unlike Cadmar, he isn't able to formulate any ideas about what he just saw. So he just watches Denholm, Cassandra and his companions, not knowing what to do or say.

Somehow, Denholm's reaction to the dramatic images unleashes bad memories in the gnome's own mind.

Lorth
Friday May 21st, 2004 9:30:43 AM

Lorth loosely pieces together the same story that Cadmar surmised. This is not good he thinks... I hope she can be reasoned with.

Bralin
Friday May 21st, 2004 10:51:29 AM

The dwarf accepts the images without comment. The power of wood seems strong indeed, but lacks the clean quality of stone.

Bralin ponders on the differences twixt wood and stone, and also wonders where the Shedar person is going to be.

Kedarn
Friday May 21st, 2004 4:11:47 PM

after the images have faded Kedarn asks Denholm "Who is Shedar? Where can we find Shedar?"

Alkali
Sunday May 23rd, 2004 8:46:38 PM

Alkali's face turns for the worse as images pass though his mind. He looks down at the ground and rages. "We have done nothing to deserve this. Nothing at all. We practice our heritage and help where we can. And this is how we are repaid. Life given away for... for money! How far does prejudice go?" He glares at the mask at Cassandra and then calms down a bit. "And yet we curse each other rather than secure our place in the world..."

DM Bob and Carla
Sunday May 23rd, 2004 9:44:14 PM

Denholm gently, but firmly grasps the wobbly witch by the arm and leads her to one of the great chairs, into which she sinks heavily. The ancient then finds another large seat and sinks into it with a sigh. "Shedar. Yes. You must seek her out to solve the mystery of this mask and release your friend," he says wearily shaking his head.

Looking unseeingly at the party leader, Denholm answers Kedarn's question, "I do not know much more of the story of Shedar than the images I have just shared with you. She came to live here after the Jarl was overthrown and the Dragons freed the valley. She lives at the northern most toe of the Wyrmsfut. Head north until you cross a river, then along the north east trail. You will find caves where she makes her home."

Fixing Alkali with large mournful eyes, he adds, "I knew her to be conflicted, but not capable of vice. I have avoided her for she has done no harm to the Culverwood...or so I thought." With sudden vehemence he looks to each of the party, before fixing on Alkali once again, "you must destroy the mask!"

Sinking back into his chair, he closes his eyes, and a fissure opens above the stairs. The morning sun shining through the forest canopy gives the ground a dappled appearance, and the humid, earthy smell of the bog reaches out. From the recesses of the chair comes one last warning, "take heed, the Wyrmsfut holds many dangers."

Cadmar
Monday May 24th, 2004 3:41:53 AM

"Thank you, we probably wouldn't know what to do if you didn't point the way out for us."

Cadmar walks up to the witch and gently takes her hand. "Come, Cassandra. We should reach Shedar before dusk."

Before the party leaves Cadmar turns to Denholm and asks: "What dangers lurk on the north east trail? Could you be more specific? This land is your home; won't you please share with us your knowledge of its perils?"

Cadmar is glad that two witches travel with the party. It might make talking to Shedar easier. Unless, of course, she holds a grudge against her fellow spellcasters. Then the party will have a serious problem [the mask has a moderate aura => creator was a spellcaster of level 6+].

"Alkali, Cassandra - what do you make of these images? Did you recognize the coven she belonged to?"

Kedarn
Monday May 24th, 2004 4:15:49 AM

"Thank you for your knowlege Denholm." Kedarn says as he gathers his gear.
Kedarn then moves over to the opening and waits for the rest of the group before exiting back into the Wyrmsfut.

Lorth
Monday May 24th, 2004 8:28:55 AM

Lorth gathers up his gear, check it and stowes it away. He then heads out the door and waits for everyone else.

After Bralin has renewed his spell powers with the strange ritual with the obsidian sphere, Elerinn follows his companions towards the north of Wyrmsfut. He tries to go there without any expectations, because he has been dissapointed quite a few times during the trip to free Cassandra.

Alkali
Monday May 24th, 2004 9:27:45 PM

Alkali frowns when asked whether he can recognize the witch's coven. "I unfortunately did not spend much time learning about different covens. Learning witchcraft itself is so time consuming."

DM Bob & Carla
Monday May 24th, 2004 11:25:56 PM

"Many things lurk in the Culverwood and in Wyrmsfut" The thoughts penetrate your minds, more slowly now as if the strange creature has adjusted to the capacity of your minds to recieve information. "I have not travelled to that corner of this place for some time and much is likely to have changed. Spiders and quicksand are common throughout the swamp as well as stirges. Twigblights, once rare in the swamp are now becoming more common, and I have detected the presence of trolls in the area as well. What else lurks in these places will be for you to discover." Denholm rises from his chair and points the way out. "Remember, the mask must be destroyed for too much hatred lies in its creation."

Once outside the tree, the fissure closes leaving no trace of its existence.

Andrath
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 12:40:08 AM

Clearly unfamiliar with the magical home and the powers that live in this forest and swamp, Andrath just listens and learns. He thanks Denholm for his hospitality, and a safe night's rest, but he did miss his meat for supper. Oh well, when they get back to town, he will make up for it with a good roast of venison...he quickly wipes that thought from his mind, wondering if Denholm can read what he was just thinking.

Once outside, Andrath takes his trusty pokey-stick in one hand, and his longsword in the other and leads the party north to find the river. As per usual, he keeps his eyes and ears open, some 50'-100' in front of the party. "If I hold my hand up over my head, you should all stop where you are and be as quiet as possible. It means that I have spotted something, and want to watch it for a moment, then I will come back and tell you what I have seen.

Cadmar
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 4:25:18 AM

"Trolls. This week just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it?"

While Bralin muses over his sphere Cadmar pages through his book [0: Dancing Lights, Acid Splash, Ghost Sound; 1: Shield x2].

"If somebody gets a stirge others should kill it as soon as possible. It is almost impossible to rip it off, so it's not worth a bother to try."

"As for trolls, let's just pray we don't run into one. And if we do, we probably should run away, unless we want a repeat of the owlbear encounter. A troll can kill any of us in just a few seconds. It would be a suicide to fight it hand to hand." [if a troll hits with two claws it does 35 damage on average]

Lorth
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 7:44:03 AM

Lorth shudders when he hears trolls, "I've never seen a troll, just heard stories of them. Hopefully we will not run into one, in our travels." He straps on his shield and lets his warhammer rest over his shoulder.

Bralin
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 8:20:58 AM

Bralin's interest piques at the mention of trolls. A worthy adversary indeed!
But the others seemed determined to avoid such an encounter. And, truth be told, 'tis likely the correct strategy. Still....

Harboring daydreams of an epic encounter, the dwarf falls into his customary rear guard position as the group moves out.

Elerinn
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 11:29:32 AM

Elerinn positions himself somewhere in the middle of the group and hopes there will be no trolls, spiders, stirges or other hindrances on the road. When Cadmar recalls the owlbear encounter, the gnome remembers lost companion Thram and other former members of the Swords of Light.

Alkali
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 9:31:09 PM

Alkali walks outside in a slightly sour mood. Still, he ponders what a twigblight is.

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 10:54:38 PM

Andrath leads the party north along the trail, carefully picking his way through the swamp and avoiding several suspicious patches of open ground. The mood is quiet as the Swords of Light each consider the perils they may face. Cassandra seems buoyed by the knowledge that her ordeal may soon be over.

At noon they encounter a small stream crossing the path. It's waters are cold and dark, stained the color of tea by the decomposing organic matter of the swamp. Heavy moss hangs from the tree branches and the only sound other than their own is the steady buzz of small insects that plague their every step.

A small narrow path, less well used than the trail they have been on, branches off to the northeast.

Andrath (-2 Str)
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 11:01:52 PM

Andrath waves the rest of the party up as he waits by the side of the stream.

"I am still affected by the spider's poison from yesterday. Has anyone figured a way to help me today? I would very much appreciate it."

"So, here we are at a little stream. I am fairly certain that Denholm mentioned crossing a river, and following a trail to the northeast once we have crossed said river. Could this be the river that he is referring to? It seems a little small, but what do I know from rivers?"

[OOC: Is the trail to the northeast on this side or the other side of the stream? Denholm's instructions were to cross a river and then follow a trail northeast, so it is important to know if this trail is on our side, or the other side, of the river.]

Kedarn
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 1:38:18 AM

"Andrath the poison should be wearing off alittle each day." Kedarn answers.

If the trail is on the other side of the small stream: After a few moments of contemplation Kedarn tells the others "I think we should cross the stream and continue down the path leading to the northeast."

Lorth
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 7:12:29 AM

"I am sorry, there is nothing I can do for you Andrath.", replies Lorth. He then waits to see where the party decides to go and follows along.

Bralin
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 8:41:24 AM

The dwarf shakes his head in response to Andrath's query.

He ponders the question of direction for a bit. Surely a being such as Denholm would not regard this trickle as a river.

"North," he states.

Cadmar
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 9:00:38 AM

"I can't do anything for you now, Andrath. Let's buy a wand of Lesser Restoration next time we hit Jarlswolf. Even if we get one that has only ten charges or so it might save somebody's life later on."

Cadmar slaps a mosquito that landed on his neck. The ranger is dirty, tired, and impatient. His ribs still hurt from the tender embrace of the assasin vine. The buzzing clouds of insects start to slowly drive him nuts. The mere thought of the way back is enough to bring him to the brink of exhaustion.

Elerinn
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 12:19:06 PM

"I'm sorry, Andrath, but do not have healing skills to cure you.", Elerinn says and stops at the small stream. He doesn't know if Denholm considers this a river or not, but he suggests to follow the narrow path.

Like Cadmar, Elerinn seems tired about being inside this nasty swamp and hopes the way out will be less dangerous then the way in.

Alkali
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 6:26:46 PM

Alkali shakes his head with a frown still on his face. "I can only prevent poisons, not stop them. Just take it easy and should fade."
He looks side to side quickly for signs of witches or witchcraft. Karee likewise watches while they move perched on Alkali's shoulder.
"Cassandra, do you notice anything?"

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 8:24:35 PM

The party crosses the stream and stops to discuss which way to go. The smaller trail leading to the northeast or the main trail which continues to the north but seems to be curling to the west.

None of the party members are able to assist Andrath and suggest he soldier on until the poison works it's way out of his system.

The longer the party remains still, the more insects congregate around them. Small rivulets of blood seep from the hairlines of Bralin and Alkali, and Elerinn inhales one of the tiny insects. It sticks against the back of his throat, leaving a bitter taste that is only relieved by several hard swallows.

Andrath
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 11:13:58 PM

Andrath looks puzzled, and says, "When I worked for the city guard, I was poisoned a couple of times arresting members of the local thieve's guild. I was able to get some sort of magical healing from the church that removed the effects of the poison immediately. Is that sort of magic too high for you, Kedarn? Because, if not, I surely could have used such healing today. I am often in the brunt of the attack, and I need all the strength that I can get."

After listening to the discussion about the river versus the stream, Andrath says, "Do any of you have wilderness skills? We were shown a rough map of the Wyrmsfut. If I remember correctly, Denholm's tree was in the center 'toe' of the fog, and we are heading towards the northern 'toe'. Does anyone have any idea whether we have travelled far enough to have reached the northern 'toe'?

Andrath climbs a trusty tree [OOC: taking 10 on the climbing, for a climb check of 19], and tries to get some sense of whether they have travelled far enough or not. [OOC: I don't know which skill/characteristic would be appropriate here, so I will roll a d20 using the Irony Games server, and get a ... 1. So, of course, the tree-climbing expedition nets absolutely no information for the city-dwelling elf.]

Kedarn
Thursday May 27th, 2004 4:10:54 AM

"Unfortunately right now that is beyond my ability" Kedarn answers Andrath.

"I sugest we continue north untill we come across the river that was mentioned by Denholm" Kedarn says.

Cadmar  d20+1=8
Thursday May 27th, 2004 6:45:09 AM

"Hm, your call, Kedarn, but my guess would be that this path branching northeast is the trail we are supposed to take. As for the stream, who knows, maybe it grows into a river in the Spring? Besides, the main trail seems to turn west."

Paying attention not to walk into another natural hazard Cadmar takes a look around the site, checking if there are any signs of water seasonally running higher than now [Wilderness Lore 8].

"Maybe you could send birds to check if there is any larger river up ahead?"

Lorth
Thursday May 27th, 2004 7:48:05 AM

Lorth swats at his head, "Either way, lets try to keep moving, these insects are really starting to bite."

Bralin
Thursday May 27th, 2004 8:59:34 AM

"Aye" Bralin says, agreeing with Lorth.

The dwarf swats energetically at the bugs infesting his hair and beard. Yet another nuisance not present underground.

Elerinn
Thursday May 27th, 2004 11:52:58 AM

Elerinn curses when he nearly suffocates when a tiny insect flies right into his throat and after he is done coughing. "I don't know how Denholm is able to remain sane inside this swamp.", he says, when he sees his companions are being harrased by the little flies, as well.

Alkali
Thursday May 27th, 2004 4:22:34 PM

Alkali puts his hand on his head and looks at his stained hand. "I suppose if a witch did live here, she would have no problem getting blood." He tries to shake his head free of insects and wear his hood.

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday May 27th, 2004 9:05:45 PM

Andrath climbs a tree to get a better view of his surroundings, but the thick foliage of the tree he has climbed prevents him from seeing much of anything. Dejected he climbs down with nothing to report. Kedarn urges the group northward on the main trail. As they march forward they kick up clouds of tiny insects that replace the ones they just left behind.

After several hours of marching the group comes across another small stream. It is easily crossed and within the half-hour they find themselves once again at Denholm's tree.

Andrath (-2 Str)
Thursday May 27th, 2004 10:57:52 PM

Andrath calls the party up as they reach the huge tree. "Now, I may be wrong, not being a forester-type, but I am fairly sure that we have been here before, haven't we?"

Assuming that the party agrees, Andrath leads them back to the north again. "Once we hit that stream, and cross it again, I plan on taking the northeast branch, alright?" [OOC: Listen 19, Search 12 (natural 1), and Spot 35 (natural 20)]

Cadmar
Friday May 28th, 2004 2:44:20 AM

"See, I told you. We just lost half a day." Cadmar doesn't sound angry, just tired. "Let's get back on the road and try to reach the caves before dusk. I really loathe the thought of wandering in this marsh in the dark."

Lorth
Friday May 28th, 2004 7:46:58 AM

Lorth sighs when he sees the tree. "Oh well, lets get back on the trail."

Bralin
Friday May 28th, 2004 8:45:47 AM

The dwarf makes no sound, but grimaces sourly at the sight of Denholm's tree.

Their course of action, as pointed out by Andrath, is obvious. Bralin trails the group, pondering the definition of 'river'.

Elerinn
Friday May 28th, 2004 10:48:52 AM

Elerinn is surprised to see Denholm's tree and sighs. This means the trip will take even longer and this means more heat and more of those bloody insects.

Silently, he follows the group along the road, hoping the same mistake is not made again.

Kedarn
Friday May 28th, 2004 6:50:53 PM

"I only suggested we head north. Take the path once we get past the stream." Kedarn comments.

DM Bob & Carla
Sunday May 30th, 2004 10:45:54 PM

The grumbling adventurers complain briefly about lost time and resume their quest. They once again cross the stream and reach the fork in the trail, this time electing to take the northeast branch.

As dusk settles on the Wyrmsfut, the sound of Cicadas and birds is slowly replaced by the constant buzzing of mosquitoes and other small insects. The narrow path becomes difficult to follow.

Andrath (-2 Str)
Sunday May 30th, 2004 11:33:58 PM

Andrath watches dusk fall with growing worry. He stops and lets the party catch up. "It's getting dark. Do we continue on? Those of us with low-light vision, and even dark vision, can lead the rest of you. I also have a hooded lantern that one of you humans can use, if you want. We can also hold a rope, so that no-one wanders off. I am really hesitant about spending a night here, unless we can find a safe place to stop."

Cadmar
Monday May 31st, 2004 1:45:39 PM

"The trail seems to be getting difficult to follow. What if there is another fork? Or a patch of treacherous terrain? What if we walk into an ambush of some kind of predator? Some of us are next to useless when we have to fight in the dark, me included. I say we locate the safest place for rest that we can find and spend the night there."

Elerinn agrees with Kedarn and says: "It's too dangerous to travel through this swamp in the darkness. If it's okay with you, I'll take the first watch."

The gnome waits while Kedarn searches for a suitable place to set up camp. He hopes there will be no spiders around, or even worse, trolls.

Bralin
Monday May 31st, 2004 5:36:38 PM

The dwarf has no preference. Move or not, it makes no difference.

Seeing the rest of the group seems intent on making camp, Bralin helps set up and keep watch.

Alkali

Alkali votes to make camp. "All these bugs are driving me insane. I hate this itch."

Tuesday June 1st, 2004 12:20:07 AM

Kedarn scouts the surrounding area and finds a suitable spot to make camp. A small rock nob protrudes from the surrounding swamp and provides a dry area large enough to accomodate the party. It also provides some small vantage over the surrounding ground.

Watches are set up, Elerinn and Cadmar taking the first watch, Bralin and Lorth the middle, and Kedarn and Alkali the last. Cassandra stays close to Cadmar, remaining awake for his watch, and then succumbing to sleep when he does.

The night passes uneventfully, although the still night air does little to keep the insects at bay. Dawn breaks to a party of weary and uncomfortable adventurers.

Lorth
Tuesday June 1st, 2004 8:40:44 AM

In the morning, Lorth tries his best to ignore the insects. "I don't know how anyone lives in this swamp", he mumbles.

Gathering up his possessions he readies to leave.

Elerinn
Tuesday June 1st, 2004 5:19:39 PM

Elerinn isn't too enthousiastic to get going, again. Perhaps he fears that the group gets lost again and isn't able to find the witch who can help Cassandra.

But the gnome realizes that they should move on as quick as possible to get out of the nasty swamp as soon as possible. When Bralin and Lorth both complain about the swamp, Elerinn says: "I totally agree with you. The first thing I'm going to do when we get back, is take a bath!"

Cadmar
Tuesday June 1st, 2004 5:37:29 PM

Cadmar wakes up and stretches with a sigh. "A bath, yes. I think I will have my hair cut short, too. I don't think I could ever get the swampy smell out of it otherwise."

"Would any of you have food to spare? I lost all mine when I fell into the swamp."

"Come on, Cassandra." Cadmar smiles. "Let's get this mask off your face. I miss seeing your smile."

Alkali
Tuesday June 1st, 2004 10:03:33 PM

Alkali wakes up very tiredly. "All those bugs kept me up all night. I really need to start tasting bad."

The party rises and prepares for another day, hopeful of finding the home of Schedar and removing the mask. Andrath's strength is restored by Kedarn's spell while Bralin spends time in quiet contemplation of his stone. Talk turns to baths and haircuts.

As they set out, the patter of rain drops can be heard on the canopy of the forest. At first, few drops penetrate the layers of leaves and branches, but with time the canopy becomes saturated and the individual drops merge and roll off the leaves to fall to the forest floor. Each drop seems to contain the water of ten normal raindrops and soon all are wet through and through.

From somewhere ahead a sound, something like a muffled horn, rings out. It is impossible to pinpoint the exact direction or distance of the sound. It rings out twice more.

[OOC those making a spot check vs DC 25 will notice a large green shape moving towards them through the trees to the right of the party]

Lorth
Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 7:47:30 AM

Lorth hears the horn and immediately stops in his tracks and readies his shield and warhammer. He then takes a few steps in whatever direction needed, to get himself near the closest person in line to him.

Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 8:53:20 AM

Bralin takes the rain in silence. Yet another reason caves are preferable to forests.

The sounds of a horn cause the dwarf to grimace. He scans the area, but sees nothing [Spot 9]. Like Lorth, Bralin readies axe and shield. Very little in this wood has been friendly, and there is no reason to think this next encounter will be any different.

"Did you hear that? I don't like it. Hope it's some kind of animal, not a tribe of lizardfolk rising an alarm."

Cadmar looks around but doesn't notice anything through the shower of rain [Spot 10]. The ranger strains his ears to hear any threats that might lurk nearby [Listen 20].

Kedarn (AC 17 HP 27/27)  d20+5=16
Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 4:32:57 PM

Hearing the horn Kedarn readies his rapier in case the group is attacked. Kedarn then casts bless on the group (duration 3 minutes)

Elerinn
Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 6:27:11 PM

Elerinn does hear the horn, but his eyesight isn't good enough to spot the thing that created the sound. The sorcerer readies himself for whatever might happen and looks at his companions.

Alkali walks groggily along muttering about bugs when he hears a horn go off. He looks left and right but his tired eyes can't focus in the rain. Suddenly, Karee squawks and flies in front of Alkali. "It's in front of us... I can't see it though." He readies himself for the attack.

Andrath  d20+15=20 d20+11=17 d20+11=24
Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 9:08:32 PM

Andrath thanks Kedarn for his restorative spell and takes the lead some 50 feet ahead of the group. He feels much better now that the poison has left his body and even the steady rain cannot diminish his optimism this day.

At the sound of the horn Andrath raises his clenched fist to signal the party to stay where they are. The rogue scans the surrounding swamp for any signs of movement but the rain and mist are hard to see through[spot=20].

"Stay where you are and be prepared" he whispers back to the group. Andrath unshoulders his bow and knocks an arrow and then with as little sound as possible he steps behind some cover and tries to remain hidden to whatever is out there [move silently=17, hide=24].
