A few days later, even as you work out how to divide the spoils of your latest success, there is a knock at the door. You open it to find a young boy bearing a message.
"Lady said to give you this," he says. He hangs about for a bit in hopes of a tip, then departs.
The message is written in a neat, attractive hand on plain cream-colored paper:
"Dear Friends,
I hope you will excuse my temerity in writing to you, even though we have never been introduced. I have heard of your exploits, and the assistance you were able to offer that good artisan, and I beg that you will likewise help me.
Please meet me tomorrow at the Flying Pigs Inn in the Outcast Quarter. Take whatever precautions you like to ensure your safety, for I swear to you that I bear for you no ill intent.
You are my last hope. I implore you to come to the inn and listen to my plea in person.
Yours,
Avandri"
Evan d6=2 Monday May 10th, 2004 10:20:28 AM
Evan rolls the die and is grateful to discover that there will be no despute over the fact that he gets to choose last. He does point out to the group that he set Shakka's cure Light Wound in his room with the rest of his stuff but, as he conveys through sign language to Uriel and Mira, doesn't feel as if setting something aside at this time for Shakka would be of best benefit to the rest of the group as they don't know when Shakka will be returning.
During the next few days, Evan creates a nice sign and takes it to the tavern, asking if he can post it. It advertizes for a person of divinty, one who wouldn't mind working with a small group of adventurers in the capacity of health administration.
After a few nice lazy days, where Evan takes Mira and Ariel out for rides in the countryside, Evan begins to grow a little restless. So it is with some happiness and excitement, that Evan prepares to go meet the woman at the Flying Pigs Inn.
Kadaz Monday May 10th, 2004 3:23:51 PM
[Old business]
After Evan's roll it is clear that Kadaz has first pick of the magic items. "I will chose the magical chain mail. I promise that I will use it in defense of my friends and to the benefit of all." He gathers it up carefully. "Mira and Uriel, you're next, then Conner and Evan. What's left will be, for now, Shakka's."
"As for the coin, I suggest that out of the purse we each take 10 gp and use the remaining for group expenses."
But there was still the problem of a name. Without a group name those seeking their assistance had to start their messages with "Dear Friends." That will never do. How about:
Plateau's Finest Birdie's Best The Quiet Ones The Fellowship of the Plateau The Guarded Ones The Plateau Investigators (this idea brings on the strange urge to wear a fedora)
Ah well, none of these quite hit the spot. Maybe inspiration will strike soon.
[New business]
Kadaz has spent the last several days working out in the chain mail. He wasn't use to wearing metal armor - it had been reserved for higher ranking guards than himself. But his new armor proved to be an excellent fit and not much more of a hindrance than his studded leather had been.
But one can practice only so long. When the request for their assisance came in Kadaz was as eager as anyone to go to the meeting at The Flying Pigs Inn.
Mira Monday May 10th, 2004 5:47:02 PM
[Old business]
Mira looks sideways at the paladin, and asks, "this okay with you?" as she retrieves the magical wand. "By the way, you should keep the other one, the one from before, the one for healing, since you seem to be the only one who can weild it properly." The sorcerer returns the new rod to her belt, and collects her 10 pieces of gold. "Kadaz, will you keep track of the money and goods the party holds in common? Maybe Conner will let you use his journal?" Mira will stick around to see what the other's choose, and if anything remains she volunteers, "I can exchange what's left for vouchers or gold at The Catacombs, or we can store the items here for use as the party sees fit."
"We do need a name," she responds to the dwarf, "although Friends isn't bad, I think it's been used by another group already. Let us think on this one a while."
[New business]
Mira exercises her mind during the down time. She tries to get Uriel to spare an hour from his morning routine, to teach her what he knows of Evan's language of dancing fingers. She tries to learn more about the paladin and his motivations. Later, she practices 'signing' with the ranger. She enjoys their country forrays around Plateau City. After the evening meal, she slips out, giving the excuse of 'a trip to the bath house'. The sorcerer is gone until late at night. When she returns, she does indeed give the appearance of having returned from a bath, with a shiny, clean face, wet hair coiled and pinned in a bun at the back of her head, and a smile of smug self-satisfaction. The smell of soap does not quite hide the alchemical odors given off by her clothing.
Uriel Monday May 10th, 2004 8:51:44 PM
[Old Business] "That's fine," Uriel answers quietly, "Since I seem to be the only one who uses a bow, I will take the arrows." Uriel quickly sorts the arrows with a mix of all three in all the quivers.
While he does this, he says, "We could be the Band of Fives - since we seem to enjoy the rolling fives so much."
[New Business] Uriel seems glad to be able to help Mira learn sign language. Uriel lets Mira know through sign that he hopes to one day, start some vocational training and shelter for the street orphans and other indigents of the city.
Conner Monday May 10th, 2004 10:02:42 PM
[Old Business]
"I will take what remains after teh others have chosen" the fighter states. "I have little use for what remains, but would trade at the Catacombs for something of more use to me. Let the others chose first."
[New Business]
Conner takes 10 gp for his purse and hands his journal to Kadaz. "Never was one for writing, best you keep this."
Uriel Monday May 10th, 2004 10:27:42 PM
"Conner - you don't want the mithril shirt? Wouldn't that be of use?" Uriel queries.
Conner Monday May 10th, 2004 10:47:22 PM
"Uriel my friend, the Mithral shirt would best suit another, for I lack the agility to take advantage of such fine chain. I would but trade it for something more substantive."
DM Kathy Tuesday May 11th, 2004 12:03:09 AM
Eager to get started on a new mission, you go to the Flying Pigs Inn to meet the mysterious Avandri. You make your way to the Outcast Quarter, home of those who don't quite fit in anywhere else. The sights here are astonishing--was that an ogre?--and it is easy to get distracted.
Nevertheless, you are able to locate the Flying Pigs Inn without too much trouble, and you step into its hushed, dimly-lit interior. You pause, looking curiously about, and are approached by a human woman. Slender and graceful, she wears a flowing dress with a soft hood pulled modestly up over her hair.
"I am Avandri," she says in a soft, cultured voice. "Please, won't you come and sit down?"
She leads you to a table toward the back. You do not see her gesture, but a centaur waitress is there almost immediately to take your luncheon order.
"Please allow me to buy you a meal," Avandri says. "So your jouney will not have been in vain, even if you refuse the job--as I pray you do not."
Arm - better late than never... :-) d20+7=12 Tuesday May 11th, 2004 7:06:55 AM
[Old Business]
Arm chooses the bracers for himself and deposits the 10 gp into a pouch, grateful that the bickering has ended, and hopes that it doesn't start up again.
"Actually, I'm rather fond of 'The Guarded Ones', but the final decision, of course, should be up to the group." he says to those assembled.
[New Business]
Arm seats himself at the table in the Flying Pigs Inn, and questions Avandri, "You said you had a proposition for us. We are obviously interested, since we showed up here. So pray tell us, what do you have in mind?". (diplomacy=12)
Evan d20+7=14 d20+7=25 Tuesday May 11th, 2004 10:32:27 AM
(Old Business) Evan looks over the remaining treasure, looking to Conner to make sure its ok for him to choose next. The pearl would be of no use to Evan but as Conner said, Evan could also take the leftovers to the catacombs. Evan fingers the mithral shirt for a moment, gazing at the pretty armor. It would certainly benefit Conner but it feels light enough that even Evan would feel comfortable. Evan picks up the mithral shirt and offers it to Conner who is supposed to choose before he does. If Conner again refuses the armor, then Evan will take the armor, smiling wryly in that he had hoped to get armor for Mira and ended up with armor for himself instead.
Evan doesn't comment on any of the names yet because he thinks it may be a bit soon to find the perfect name for the group.
Evan noticed Mira's strange behavior. She had been gone for so long that Evan had been very close to going after her. It was with some relief that he greeted Mira when she returned. However, her expression, along with the amount of time she had been gone confuses Evan a little. He had been under the impression that Mira had no 'special' friend in Plateau City yet her behavior is that of someone who had just spent a very pleasant evening with another. Or perhaps Evan is just reading too much into what had happened. Or maybe Evan was misreading Mira's behavior towards him....With a small sigh, Evan is glad he is always silent as this way no one will realize the turmoil he suffers as he tries to figure out his own feelings for Mira.
(New Business)
Evan takes a seat at the far end of the table to allow those who can speak to be able to interact better with the woman. While she explains her plight, Evan will watch the room as he listens.
(spot 14; listen 25)
Uriel d20+4=7 d20+3=18 Tuesday May 11th, 2004 4:56:19 PM
Uriel surveys the unusual surroundings with curiousity. "This is incredible."
After they enter the inn, and meet Avandri, Uriel says, "Thank you for the offer of a meal. We hope that we can be of assistance to you."
After they sit Uriel will try to position himself to better see the unusual citizens of this quarter but he obviously too distracted to notice anything subtle. {Spot:7 Listen:18}
Mira d20+2=17 d20+4=12 Tuesday May 11th, 2004 5:41:56 PM
Mira takes a seat next to Evan. Turning to face the ranger she raises her right hand and draws a ? in the air, after which she places her upturned hands before her chest and makes a grasping movement towards her body. With a smile she points to Evan, then she places her open hand with the thumb and index finger held an inch or two apart, at mid-chest. As her hand moves straight out from her chest, the two fingers come together. Finally, Mira raises her hand, fingers curved in the form of a 'C' to her mouth.*
As she waits for Evan to answer, she raises her hand and hails the centaur waitress, placing a request for a bottle of wine. When the woman named "Avandri" offers lunch, Mira requests the special of the day.
The business of ordering taken care of, the sorcerer turns to study the attractive woman (Sense Motive=17) She studies the woman's clothing, hair-style and ornamention to see if it gives any clues to her identity (Gather Info=12) as she listens for her answer to Arm's questions.
*Would you like a drink?
Conner d20+3=17 Tuesday May 11th, 2004 6:38:55 PM
[More Old Business] The fighter once again declines the mithral shirt and watches Evan don the armor. He notes how well it suits the lean ranger and how easily he moves in it. While the fighter admires the workmanship and quality of the chain, he thinks it would be too delicate for himself.
"I shall take the pearl of power and anything else left over to the catacombs and see what I can get for it, if the rest of you are satisfied".
[New Business]
Conner takes a seat at the table in the Flying Pigs Inn and scans the crowd for trouble [Spot=17] He has been in rougher bars than this while stationed in the hinterlands, and remains non-plussed by the variety of races patronizing the inn.
Kadaz Tuesday May 11th, 2004 6:57:20 PM
"Miss Avandri" says Kadaz. "Thank you very much for your kind offer. I will listen to your proposition with great interest."
Kadaz leans forward in his seat eyes intent on this new woman, ready to take in every detail.
DM Kathy Tuesday May 11th, 2004 8:43:54 PM
The Taur server takes your order and departs. Avandri does not order anything, although there is a glass of wine on the table in front of her.
Avandri lifts the hood from her brown hair and lets it fall, so you can see her face more clearly. She is attractive, with an air of obvious refinement and quality. Her slender hands toy with her wineglass as she speaks.
"My grandfather Daval was an adventurer, a rather successful one." She smiles. "No need to pretend to have heard of him. His success was not the kind that brings fame, but he did quite well for himself, well enough to purchase Wycklea."
Her smile grows wistful. "Wycklea is an estate, on the second plateau. I know I am biased, but I think it the most beautiful place in all the Wold. It is my home, you see--or it was, for many years."
She sighs, and continues. "My parents died when I was small, and my grandfather raised me at Wycklea. My cousin Sarla also lost her parents at a young age, so she, too came to stay. We were the only family each other had--Grandfather, Sarla, and me--and for a long time we were as close as close can be.
"But Sarla changed as she grew older. She became more and more concerned with wealth, and the things wealth could buy. She began spending time with a group of wealthy young ne'er-do-wells from the local estates--and spending money with them, too. More money than we could afford."
She gives a self-depricating little laugh. "We were not wealthy, you know--not really. Grandfather had put nearly everything he had into the estate, and although it was prosperous, it could not meet the demands that Sarla was now placing upon it.
"Grandfather tried to get her to stop, cutting off her allowance and so on. But by then, taught and encouraged by her new friends, she had become a schemer and a manipulator. It was all too easy for her to evade Grandfather's strictures.
"At last Grandfather had had enough. It broke his heart to have to do it, but he made out a new will disinheriting Sarla. He intended to make this generally known, to prevent Sarla from borrowing upon her expectations.
"Before he could do this, however, he--" she pauses, swallows, then contineus, "he died."
She takes another pause to compose herself, and then continues, "Before I knew what was happening, Sarla had produced a fradulent will, naming herself as heir and disinheriting me. I'm not sure how, but she got the courts to uphold her claim." Her lip wobbles alarmingly, but she controls it.
"Sarla has been in possession of Wycklea for some months now," Avandri says, her voice now noticably agitated. "I cannot find out what condition the estate is in, or all the dependents--" she looks up at you.
"People depend on Wycklea, you know," she continues a little more calmly. "For their livelihoods. If Sarla runs the place into the ground, as I fear she will, then where will those people turn?"
She looks imploringly at you, "I must find out what's going on at Wycklea. I particularly need to know what forces Sarla has gathered around her, what 'proof' she has of her claim, and which officials support her in it." Looking thoughtful, she continues more slowly, "I would also like for you to talk to Sarla. Reason with her. I'm prepared to share the estate with her, but she won't speak with me or even allow me on the property."
Avandri bites her lip and looks uncomfortable, "I'm afraid I haven't much to pay you with now," she says. "I am able to offer you an advance, however, and more if I can recover Wycklea--depending on what condition it's in by then. Will you help me?"
As she speaks, you have time to notice some things about Avandri. The dress she's wearing is made from very good material. Although simple in design, it is extremely well-made and probably quite expensive--or at least, it was when it was new. You can't help but notice the frayed cuffs, though, or the places where it's been mended with tiny, ladylike stitches.
Mira finds that she has a hard time reading Avandri. She is reserved and rather quiet, not giving much away. You do get the sense, though, that her love for her grandfather and her anxiety over the estate are quite real.
Mira d20+5=15 Tuesday May 11th, 2004 9:17:56 PM
As the woman recounts her tale and petitions the group, Mira removes her glasses, and polishes the smudges off using the sleeve of her tunic. Repositioning her spectacles, the sorcerer fixes the woman with her green eyes, and enquires, "do you have a copy of your grandfather's true will, or do you know where we could find it?" (Diplomacy=15)
From past experience, Mira knows that family relations are not always as they seem at first glance. Why, just recently there was the case of the twin sisters; one good, and one evil. Before the party accepts this next request, they would do well to verify this woman's claims.
Mira continues, "Is there anyone who can corroborate your story?"
While waiting for the woman to answer, or for other's to ask their questions, the green-eyed sorcerer with make discreet hand signals for both Evan and Uriel to see.*
*What do you make of this?
Uriel d20+2=22 d20+2=9 Tuesday May 11th, 2004 11:34:40 PM
Uriel forcibly focuses on the tale and the woman, trying to ignore the unusual scenery.
"I am sorry for the loss of your Grandfather...and your cousin," Uriel says sincerely. He maintains eye contact while he says this to try to get a sense of her motives {Sense Motive:Natural 20!}
"Without meaning to sound insensitive, I also have some questions. First, you mentioned what motivated your cousin, but did not say what your own motivations are. It is clear that you are concerned with the estate and with the people who make their livelihood there but what is your stake in this? Also, do you know any of the names of the young rakes that your cousin associates with? And finally, how did your grandfather die? Were the circumstances at all unusual?"
To Mira, in sign... *dont know... would like to believe... I understand your concern... we should be careful ...research well her story
OOC:sorry for the second roll, too quick on the roll button.
Conner Tuesday May 11th, 2004 11:37:04 PM
Conner listens to the woman's sad tale with some degree of disbelief. He holds his tongue for the time being.
Arm d20=12 Wednesday May 12th, 2004 5:51:31 AM
Like Conner, Arm reserves further comments until the questions put forth to her have been answered. He also shares Conner's suspicions, feeling that there is much that they are not being told. (sense motive=12)
Evan Wednesday May 12th, 2004 9:49:04 AM
Evan relaxes after he's made sure that there is no one taking any undue notice of their group. As they listen to the woman's story, he takes note of Mira's question. Taking her hand in his affectionately, he signs into the palm of her hand. If there are city officials involved, there may be nothing we can do. But find out the names of the officials.
Kadaz Wednesday May 12th, 2004 10:07:08 PM
Kadaz's mind is racing, full of with ideas about how to verify Avandri's story, research how Sarla could have accomplished this action, and how to gather information on Wycklea. But now best let Avandri finish her story.
DM Kathy Wednesday May 12th, 2004 10:40:09 PM
"Alas," says Avandri to Mira, "the only copy of the will I know about was at Wycklea. I fear Sarla may have found and destroyed it. Grandfather had a man of affairs here in Plateau City, though, and I have some hopes that he may have a copy. I have been trying to find him so that he can verify my story and perhaps provide his copy of the true will. This is what I will be working on while you investigate Sarla."
Avandri listnens intently to Uriel's questions. "I am concerned for the welfare of those on the estate," she confirms. "But more than that, Wycklea is my home. It is really the only home I have ever known; I came there when I was quite small, you see." She frowns. "Jarvis and his crowd. They were the ones she spend the most time with." She looks a little alarmed at Uriel's last question. "Unusual? I don't think so. He had been ill off and on for a while; the healers and the apothecary said it was only a matter of time. Why?" she now sounds quite agitated. "Do you think Sarla had something to do with it?"
Uriel senses that Avandri is telling the truth about Wycklea being her home, and about her grandfather's death. He also senses that she bears the group no ill will, although she hasn't told them everything.
Arm believes Avandri's tale.
Connor, who grew up nearby, seems to recall hearing of a retired adventurer living on an estate who was raising two nieces. He tentatively desides that although Sarla and Avandri are granddaughters and not nieces, they are probably the family he heard about. Other than those bare facts, though, he doesn't remember hearing anything about the family.
Uriel Wednesday May 12th, 2004 11:10:01 PM
Uriel leans forward and says, "I am sorry to have distressed you Avandri. I only offer up the fortuitous timing of his demise and how it benefits Sarla. It is more likely she just saw an opportunity when he passed away."
He sits back and says, "I am not sure what we can do, but I would like to try. Do you have anything else you would like to mention?"
Arm d20=17 Thursday May 13th, 2004 6:33:42 AM
Arm nods in agreement with Uriel's words and adds, "Yes, we meant no disrespect to you, my lady. We are merely trying to form a picture of the entire situation...if Sarla is as unscrupulous (sp?) as you say, it's entirely possible that she may have arranged for your grandfather's early demise. Since he WAS in ill health, that seems to be less and less of a possibility, but we shall keep it in the back of our minds nonetheless, as many times in the past it has been used as the reason for death when other factors were involved. Anyway, as my friend said, if you have any more information regarding this matter, it would be much appreciated.". (sense motive=17)
Conner Thursday May 13th, 2004 7:31:28 AM
Conner reflects back on his childhood spent in the middle plateau. Remembering nothing of importance to the decision at hand he remains quiet.
Evan Thursday May 13th, 2004 8:15:35 AM
Evan signs to Mira, to be passed along to the woman. Who is your man of affairs here in town? Will he speak openly to us? Do you trust him?
Kadaz d20+1=16 Thursday May 13th, 2004 4:14:05 PM
Kadaz has listened to the questions and answers and now that he's finished his meal he's ready to ask his own. He has had time to collect his thoughts and so asks a series of questions on one topic, waits for the answers, and then goes on.
"Miss Avandri, if we are to visit Wycklea we need to have a reason that explains our presence. If we present ourself and start questioning Sarla she will become suspicious immediately. The longer she is unaware of our investigation the better chance we will have of discovering the truth. So, what is going on there that might bring a party like ours to Wycklea?"
"Furthermore, Sarla sounds like a well-prepared woman. No doubt she has followers and spies among the staff and residents. Who was close to your sister? Any new staff hired lately at her suggestion?"
"You say Jarvis is a young rake who his her friend. What estate and family is he from? What does he look like? Who are his friends and family? Has Sarla known him long?"
"What about your friends or trusted servants? Do you have any staff you would trust with your life? Could you provide us with an introduction or letter of recommendation to someone you trust who can guide us around the estate or at least provide some assistance?"
"About your father, are there any of his companions left, ones he went adventuring with? Any old friends who are likely to know his mind? Was he treated by a doctor in his illness?"
"And finally, about Wycklea itelf. Can you provide us with a map of the estate and the manor itself? Do you know of or suspect any secret or concealed entrances?"
"I apologize for the length of my questions. But I am sure you realize that the more information we have the greater the chance of uncovering what Sarla is doing and righting this wrong."
As Avandri answers Kadaz tries to determine how sincere she sounds. (sense motive 16)
(OOC: All those episodes of Upstairs/Downstairs may finally prove useful!)
Mira Thursday May 13th, 2004 6:26:14 PM
The sorcerer translates for Evan and adds his question to the many that have been asked. She observes admiringly, as the dwarf asks his questions and explains himself.
I wonder what his story is she thinks to herself. Kedaz is much more than he seems at first glance.
DM Kathy Thursday May 13th, 2004 9:44:18 PM
Avandri accepts Uriel's apology graciously, then says to him and Arm, "I can't think of anything else; I'm sorry."
Then Kadaz asks his questions, and Avandri seems to be doing her best to answer them.
"I am afraid there is not much at Wycklea. It is an out-of-the way spot, with little but its soil and its people to recommend it." She smiles faintly. "I always liked it that way, but now I see what a problem it presents for you. I am sorry for it, but I have heard that you are all quite clever. I'm sure you will think of something."
"Sarla never paid much heed to the staff. Most of them stayed on after she took over. I don't recall her suggesting anyone be hired, but then, she would not have spoken to me about that anyway. That would have been Grandfather's decision."
"Jarvis is a young man from a neighboring estate. Sarla and I have known him and his family all our lives. I am not sure of his friends." She looks faintly amused. "I was never fashionable enough for their smart set, you see." She gives you a description of Jarvis.
She hesitates at the next question, then reluctantly shakes her head. "I'm afraid there isn't anybody. They all depend upon the estate for their livelihood, you see, and at the moment, that means pleasing Sarla. I cannot ask any of them to risk helping me--and anyway, I cannot be completely sure of any of them. Not when their livelihoods are at stake."
She chuckles a little at the next question. "My father died some years ago, good Sir Dwarf," she says, "as we humans are wont to do after a scant few decades. Daval was my grandfather. And no, I don't know of any adventuring companions in the area. Many of them are probably still alive, but I don't know how to reach them."
"I can provide you with a map," she says, "and getting onto the grounds should be easy enough. Gaining entrance to the house will be somewhat trickier."
She moves on to Evan's question, relayed through Mira. "Gracious goodnes, no. I don't have a man of affairs," she says, surprised. "I scarcely have two coppers to rub together. Grandfather had one, I am almost certain, but I do not know his name. Or hers," she adds, "for it could just as easily been a woman. If I were at Wycklea it would be a simple matter of looking up the name in Grandfathers papers, but alas, I am not at Wycklea and must do my best. As I said, I intend to find this person while you find out what's happening with the estate."
Both Arm and Uriel believe that she has been telling the truth.
She picks up an embroidered bag and sets it on the table. Reaching in, she pulls out a map case. "The map of Wycklea," she says, placing it in the center of the table. Then she pulls out seven plain leather pouches. "I can pay you each 50 gold in advance. As I said, it isn't much, but if we are successful I can give you more." Hesitating, she looks around the table. "I had heard there were seven of you."
Conner Thursday May 13th, 2004 11:21:43 PM
"Other than wealthy estate owners, the only folk not likely to attract much attention on the middle plateau are laborers, gypsies, and tinkers, and only the first two come in groups as large as ours."
Conner thinks back to his youth and remembers the travelling sheepmen during lambing and shearing season, and the grape pickers that invaded the plateau as the summer waned.
"We could disguise ourselves and look for work on the estate" he suggests.
Arm Friday May 14th, 2004 8:01:09 AM
Seeing that the group has no more questions, he asks Avandri, "If we should have further questions or need more assistance with something, can you tell us where we can contact you at?". Once they receive the information, he pockets one of the pouches and says to the group, "I think we should retire to our hovel and discuss the best way to approach the situation.". Turning to Avandri, he says, "It was a pleasure meeting you, my lady. We shall do our utmost to assist you, you have my word on it.".
Uriel Friday May 14th, 2004 10:41:45 AM
Whiel Avandri is occupied with answering Kadaz and Evan's questions, Uriel fingers his symbol of Domi, looking towards Avandri. {*Detect Evil* - is she? I am just covering bases here.}
Afterwards, Uriel speaks up. "What shall be our method of contacting you if we have need?"
Kadaz Saturday May 15th, 2004 7:05:59 AM
Gypsies? Did Conner suggest a gypsy disguise? Kadaz mentally pictures himself in gypsy garb and can't help but chuckle. :)
Mira Sunday May 16th, 2004 3:36:21 PM
Mira takes the map, and turns it around so that the writing is right side up. The sorcerer also reaches for one of the pouches containing the coins. "We were 7, but one of our party is reclusive and mysterious." Off handedly, she adds, "you know monks..."*
The green-eyed woman will nod when Arm volunteers the party for the quest, and she will look to the others to see if they are in agreement.
When arrangements have been completed on how to contact/report to their new patron Mira will acknowledge Conner's suggestion and add, "maybe we could buy a wagon and an old horse. We could hide our weapons and such in the wagon. Evan could ride Ariel or tie her to the back of the wagon." Mira tries to hide her excitement as a plan starts to form. "We could pass ourselves off as itenerant types, looking for work as day-labourers and see if we can infiltrate the estate."
*(OOC: Is Shakka on walk-about and going to return soon, or is he permanantly gone from the game? Is there any recruiting going on for a new player? Maybe someone who will play a cleric? ;-)
DM Kathy Sunday May 16th, 2004 9:54:15 PM
Uriel detects no evil upon Avandri.
"I am staying here at the Flying Pigs for the time being," Avandri answers. She smiles bravely. "The Outcast Quarter seems somehow fitting, although," her face sobers, "it's a trifle expensive. I am looking for less costly lodgings, and I will let you know my address if I should find anything."
"Thank you, thank you for agreeing to help me in this. And do be on your guard. Having claimed the estate, I'm afraid Sarla will stop at nothing to keep it."
On that cheerful note, your meeting breaks up.
I need a marching order and spot checks as you leave the inn.
Uriel d20+4=9 Sunday May 16th, 2004 10:13:01 PM
"It will be our pleasure to help you," Uriels states. "We will be in touch."
As the group gets together and prepares to leave, Uriel says "I prefer to be near the front - I don't mind if someone else wants to be point - it made sense before that ambush last time for Kadaz to be up at the front also so that his view was not obscured. Would you like the front rank Kadaz?" Spot:9
Mira d20+2=8 Sunday May 16th, 2004 11:13:09 PM
As they leave the Flying Pigs, Mira trails at the back, waiting for Evan. She doesn't see much, having eyes only for the handsome young ranger. (Spot=8) Fingers flying, she signs animatedly, telling him how much she is looking forward to getting away from the city for a while.
Conner d20+3=19 Sunday May 16th, 2004 11:19:11 PM
Conner tips his mug, and quaffs the last of his ale before rising from the table. The fighter stands by the door, and waits for the stragglers to pass through. "I'll take the rear," he volunteers.
The man strides confidently a half dozen steps back from the group, on the lookout for trouble.(Spot=19)
Kadaz d20+1=13 Monday May 17th, 2004 6:13:12 AM
Kadaz steps up to the front of the group, his normal spot, as they leave the inn. He opens the door, looks around, then steps outside, trying to be alert to the surroundings (spot 13) He hitches his chain mail into a more comfortable position, and makes ready to return home.
Arm d20+2=17 Monday May 17th, 2004 8:41:09 AM
Upon leaving, Arm smacks his forehead with the palm of his hand and says, "I am sorry my friends, but I have a brief errand to run that I had nearly forgotten about. No worries for me, I shall be both watchful and safe. I shall return home as soon as I am finished...feel free to begin the discussion without me, as I'm sure someone will fill me in when I return.".
Saying so, he leaves the inn and looks about for signs of trouble (spot=17), then heads over to see Summer to fulfill his promise of telling her that the situation regarding Kethlorn has been resolved, primarily due to the information that she provided.
DM Kathy Monday May 17th, 2004 11:02:06 PM
As they leave the inn, Connor and Arm spot a half-elf woman who seems to be very interested in the group. Idle curiosity, or something more? It's hard to say--but there are plenty of odder sights here in the Outcast Quarter to be curious about.
Seeing that you notice her, the woman fades into the crowd and disappears.
Arm heads off on some errand of his own, and the others return to the apartment (?) to prepare for the journey and discuss strategy.
Conner Tuesday May 18th, 2004 12:15:07 AM
Although the woman disappears into the crowd before he can approach her, Conner commits the half-elf woman's image to his memory. He follows the others back to their place, where he promptly takes inventory of the items in his pack.
Each time there is a noise at the door, the fighter leaves his room to check it out in hopes that it might be the delivery person from The Catacombs.
Mira Tuesday May 18th, 2004 12:32:14 AM
The sorcerer returns to the flat and heads straight to her room. She studies her scrolls some more. I mustn't forget to bring these, and I must remember to use them if the time is right! thinks the woman.
Later, Mira takes a scrap of plain paper and writes a note for Baldis. She asks if he can craft her a wide belt that laces up both front and back. She copies down a picture of a dragon like the tatoo on Conner's arm, and asks that the mystical beast be incorporated in the decoration.
Mira will fold up the paper, and seal it with a bit of wax from a candle on the table. She will offer a copper to a child on the street if she will deliver the note, and another when the child returns with Baldis' response.
Having already suggested a plan, Mira will remain quiet for the time being, and learn what the other's would like to do.
Arm Tuesday May 18th, 2004 6:14:55 AM
Arm, on the way to meet Summer, stops in at Baldis' shop to inquire as to how Kethlorn is doing and also to place his order for a covering for his lute. After Baldis takes the measurements for it, he heads to the inn, hoping that Summer is still on duty...if not, he'll head back to the apartment.
Evan Tuesday May 18th, 2004 10:02:34 AM
Evan returns to the flat with Mira. While they wait for the others to return and prepare for their journey. He also hopes someone will respond to his advertisement in the tavern. The free time gives Evan a chance to 'converse' with Mira. He explains that he can do a little carpentry work. His Uncle Saul taught him how. His Uncle Saul was also the one who taught him how to speak with his hands. Saul had some unusual friends who would come by to visit and while they talked with their mouths, they also talked with their hands. It was fun to watch.
Uriel Tuesday May 18th, 2004 12:13:05 PM
"So, let's dicuss ideas on where to go with this investigation. There are several things we could do. Does everyone think we should stay together or should we split up? I think we could cover more ground in different groups but I don't want to weaken the group too much if someone tries to rough us up like in our last investigation."
Uriel continues,"I like the idea of having someone go into the villa to check it out. I think we could also inquire with city officials about the property or with a lawyer (if there are such things) about the procedure for filing a will or verifying the accuracy of a will."
Kadaz Tuesday May 18th, 2004 7:25:08 PM
"One or two people have a better chance of scouting the estate than all of us together. It would make sense for us to split up and to come together later to exchange information. Two of us could go to the estate in disguise and the rest more openly remain in the city researching the problem."
DM Kathy Tuesday May 18th, 2004 9:45:53 PM
You return to your lodgings and do various things to get ready for your new assignment.
When Arm drops by the shop, Kethlorn is there helping Baldis. He solemnly shakes your hand and thanks you for helping him. Baldis reports that the lad seems to have made a complete recovery. He asks you to call again next week for the lute cover.
Baldis' reply to Mira also requests that she call in a week "for a final fitting."
Meanwhile, Uriel and Kadaz discuss the possibility of splitting up.
Arm d20+7=19 Wednesday May 19th, 2004 6:03:35 AM
As Arm enters the inn, his mission to find Summer is momentarily forgotten as he is captivated by the most beautiful redhead he has ever seen. She is currently standing by the bar and, of all things, singing. For a brief instant, Arm is a bit upset that she is "cutting in on his action", but that thought flies away just as quickly as fallen leaves on a windy day as he becomes more and more captivated by her beauty with every passing second.
He manages to make his way to the front of the ever-increasing crowd and, unslinging his lute, begins to play a soft counterpoint to her song. Perhaps inspired by her beauty, he gives a very good performance (perform=19).
Despite his desire for her song to continue, it eventually ends, and after the crowd's reaction, he takes her hand in his and says, "My dearest woman, that has GOT to be THE most beautiful ballad I have ever heard. Even if it was the WORST song ever written, it would be made 100 times better by you singing it. My name is Armathen Ebano, but you may call me Arm. May I inquire as to what name the most wonderous woman in this town goes by?".
Evan Wednesday May 19th, 2004 9:52:32 AM
Evan has Mira explain to the others that he has some skill as a carpenter. Signing with Uriel and Mira translating. I will need a set of carpenter's tools to complete the disguise. I think I would be a very good choice to be one of the inside people because I've noticed that a lot of people tend to think that because one cannot talk, they cannot think either, and are willing to talk about things in front of a mute they woudln't say in front of others.
With a rising blush in his cheeks, he continues to explain his plan. I will need someone to translate for me, though. If Mira were to pretend to be my wife... Evan gazes into Mira's eyes as he says this hoping she won't take offense to his proposal.
Mira Wednesday May 19th, 2004 6:07:24 PM
Mira provides interpretation for Evan, explaining his plan to the group. When she gets to the part that she is to play, her eyes get shiney and two bright red spots colour her cheeks. I was thinking the very same thing she signs to the ranger, quickly breaking off the eye contact.
"I can offer myself to m'lady as a personal maid or kitchen help," Mira says to the group. "We'll need some supplies and clothes to complete the disguise!" she adds brightly, enamoured with the idea of shopping.
She starts to sign to Evan and speak at the same time, words tumbling out "I'll need a plain outfit with a skirt, and Evan'll need some tools, and stuff. Do you think Ariel will pull a small cart? Shall we go to The Catacombs? Does anyone else need anything?"
Conner Wednesday May 19th, 2004 6:17:53 PM
Having left his father's house and chosen the life of an adventurer to avoid labouring on another's land, Conner isn't keen on working the fields. The fighter studies his companions. Some are going to find it easier to disguise themselves than others. "Arms for hire?" he asks, looking at the dwarf and the paladin. "If she is as her cousin says she is, she may have some enemies and wish protection."
Conner scratches his chin and addresses Evan, "you could build a false bottom in a cart and we could hide some of our weapons until they are needed."
To Mira he says, "check on my order, and have it delivered when yours is sent." Conner remembers that the clerk said it might take a week before his new gear was ready.
Uriel Wednesday May 19th, 2004 7:43:17 PM
Uriel nods with Conner, "That would be a good angle to take if we weren't going to split up. Conner you are of an opinion not to split then to research in the city as well as trying to investigate the villa?"
"Now we only need Arm's opinion on this," Uriel states. "So far, I count Evan, Mira, Kadaz and I for splitting the group. And maybe Conner against?"
"With your idea Conner we could send in a separate individual to do look for work as a hired sword," Uriel suggests.
Kadaz Wednesday May 19th, 2004 7:51:46 PM
Kadaz ponders how to disguise himself. "I'm pretty much just a guard. I know a little about leatherworking, and a little about training dogs. But that's about it. Anyone have any ideas?"
DM Kathy Wednesday May 19th, 2004 10:17:23 PM
The group continues to discuss strategy: stay in town and investigate? Go right to the estate? Or split up and try to cover both?
Most of the equipment you need to pass as common laborers: tools, peasant clothing, etc., is readily available and not very expensive.
[This is all great roleplay, guys; feel free to continue the discussion.]
Mira Wednesday May 19th, 2004 10:30:54 PM
"I really hate to split up the group, fellas, but if we do, no one should be alone," suggests Mira gently. "How about me and Evan as a couple, and Arm as a distant relative? We can try to infiltrate the estate," she adds.
"You three," the sorcerer fixes the fighter types with a look, "can make some additional enquiries in the city, and we can arrange a rendez-vous to exchange information." Defering to the paladin, she adds, "that is if you are in agreement."
Mira gets out the map provided by their new 'employer' and studies it. "I wonder how far away the estate is, and if we will be able to return to the city each night or need to secure lodging at the manor proper," muses the woman.
Arm Thursday May 20th, 2004 5:43:26 AM
Arm waits patiently for the ravishing woman's response.
OOC: um, Kathy?? :-)
Evan Thursday May 20th, 2004 10:05:05 AM
Tapping Mira on the wrist to get her attention, Evan quickly signs to Mira, It would be better if Uriel were to be the one who travels with us. Carpenters often have a helper, so having an extra person would make sense, but it would not make sense if my helper could not communicate with me. Is there any way we could afford to get a wagon big enough for us to sleep in? That would give us excuses for slipping out of the house at odd hours. I don't think I'll have any trouble getting Ariel to pull a small wagon but if we go with a larger wagon......I wonder if we could rent a wagon and draft horses? Evan waits to hear other ideas, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. He cannot help but steal glances towards the lovely Mira.
Kadaz Thursday May 20th, 2004 4:09:12 PM
"Mira, Your idea makes a lot of sense. Uriel, Conner and I will remain in town and research what we can. But we need to set a meeting time and place, and backups also. How long will you take to get a feel for the manor? A week? If things are going well you may want to stay longer. But if they aren't then you may need help to escape.
"I would suggest that Conner travel with you three initially. He knows more about the area then the rest of us and may be able to give you some helpful tips. Decide on a meeting place in some hidden spot near the manor. Then you (the carpenters) go on and Conner returns to us (the researchers) on a fast horse.
"After a week (or a reasonable amount of time), we meet at the meeting place one night. Or at least the carpenters slip one person out to brief the rest of us. We exchange information then and devise plans. If the carpenters do not make the established time, then we will try to meet again the following night. If the rendevous is missed that 2nd night then there is something wrong and the rest of us will try to get in.
"Likewise, if the researchers miss 2 meetings then the carpenters need to come out and find us.
"I don't think we have enough information to make detailed plans now. Hopefully after a week or so of research we'll know much more.
"Any more ideas?"
Conner Thursday May 20th, 2004 7:40:12 PM
Conner listens to Kadaz. "Sure" he says, "I'll do my best. It's been a while since I was around home, though, and things might have changed up a bit."
Uriel Friday May 21st, 2004 12:38:32 AM
After translating Evan's comments, Uriel says,"While Evan makes a good point about communication, I agree that Conner would be a better choice. I am not sure I could pull off carpentry very well." Uriel laughs nervously.
"Is that OK with you, Evan?" Uriel asks,"I will try if you think this would be more believable."
DM Kathy Friday May 21st, 2004 1:10:50 AM
The red-haired woman laughs. "Why, everyone knows me," she says teasingly. "Who, may I ask, is the bold Armathen Ebano? I've not seen you in here before, have I?"
The others are beginning to finalize their plans, when all of a sudden there's a commotion outside. You hear the sounds of running feet, and terrified screams. And behind it all, so low in the register it's more of a feeling than a sound, a steady whum, whum, whum.
The sounds are audible inside Sampson's as well.
Arm d20+2=13 d20+2=13 Friday May 21st, 2004 6:01:46 AM
Before he can reply to the gorgeous woman, Arm hears the commotion outside. Turning back to the woman, he says "My deepest apologies to you my dear, but I fear that matters outside require my immediate attention. I sincerely hope that we meet again very soon, for my heart will ache for all eternity if we do not.".
He then heads through the crowd for the front door. Once outside, he draws his sword and scans the surrounding area for the source of the apparent trouble (listen=13, spot=13).
Kadaz d20+1=20 Friday May 21st, 2004 7:33:54 AM
Kadaz grabs up his axe and jams his helm on his head. He runs outside to see what is going on. (spot roll 20)
Uriel d20+4=15 Friday May 21st, 2004 8:01:24 AM
Uriel runs over to the door, and bursts through it, looking around for the cause of the noise. (SPOT:15)
As he looks he unslings his shield and draws his longsword.
Evan (ac 16, hp 12) d20+7=14 Friday May 21st, 2004 8:54:37 AM
The commotion outdside brings Evan to his feet, his sword and axe in hand as he heads outside. (spot-14)
Conner d20+3=14 Saturday May 22nd, 2004 10:54:41 PM
The sounds of screaming from outside bring Conner to his feet, He instinctively reaches for his shield and heads for the door. If he reaches the doorway he will stop and scan the area for the source of the panic [Spot=14].
Mira d20+2=11 Sunday May 23rd, 2004 10:34:56 AM
Mira rushes to her room and collects her scroll case. Slinging it over her shoulder, she picks up her light crossbow and a case of bolts. The sorcerer then dashes for the door to learn the source of the commotion. (Spot=11)
DM Kathy Sunday May 23rd, 2004 7:13:57 PM
As you move outside, you see a scene of utter chaos. All around you, townsfolk are screaming and fleeing in terror. One man stumbles into a display outside a draper's shop and sends the colored bolts of cloth flying. He continues without stoping, as do those behind him, trampling the bright silks and cottons into the ground. A gnome woman falls and is barely able to avoid being trampled.
Looking around, you see smoke rising from several spots around the city. You can smell the burning from here.
Looking up, you can easily see the cause. Across the river in the Noble Quarter, near the castle of the mayor, small shapes wheel and bank in the sky. Your mind wants to make them into birds, but birds do not have four legs. Or serpentine tails.
As you start to comprehend what you are looking at, your attention is seized by something airborn headed toward you, impossibly fast. Gliding over the river is a winged reptile whose blue-tinged scales glint and glimmer in the bright sun. Its ears are large, with frilled edges, and it has a single large horn on the end of its snout. The whum, whum, whum sound is so loud now it seems to throb through your entire being, and you realize it is the sound of the creature's wings.
At last, it sinks in: you are looking at a dragon. Even as you watch, it opens its mouth and looses a crackling bolt of electricity. It doesn't seem to be aiming at anything in particular, but that doesn't seem to matter. Two shops begin to smoke and burn. There are more screams, and more people begin to run past.
The dragon is now about 500 feet away, still airborn. It does not seem to have any specific target in mind.
Mira d20+3=11 Sunday May 23rd, 2004 9:04:35 PM
Uncomprehending Mira watches as the townsfolk flee down the cobbled street, then she looks up, waaaay up, and spots the cause of the disturbance, "gods save us...Gayaerea*" she whispers as she witnesses what she had previously only heard of in the stories and songs told by bards. 'I'm not ready for this' she thinks to herself, 'none of my weapons have the range or the power.'
Mira can only stand under the eaves of the small house to avoid being trampled (Hide=11) and stare into the sky in awe.
*Elven translation 'Dreaded ones'
Uriel Sunday May 23rd, 2004 9:54:36 PM
Uriel stares at the chaos in horror. When he notices the dragon and comprehends what is attacking, he looks at his sword in disgust.
"There is no way this is going to help. Mira, I can't believe this," Uriel states as he sheaths his sword.
He pulls out his bow and strings it. His hand fingers the quiver of assorted arrows, deciding which arrow to choose. He decides on an admantine arrow, pulling it up and prepping an attack.
Kadaz d20+3=20 Sunday May 23rd, 2004 10:11:22 PM
Kadaz and Birdie both quail at the immense shapes flying overhead. Kadaz glances left and right, and gains courage from Uriel's preparations. Kadaz unstraps his heavy heavy cross bow, cocks it, and loads a quarrel. He steps forward to get a better view and waits for a dragon to come in range.
"Uriel, think we can do any good?" ask Kadaz.
Birdie, with perhaps a bit more common sense, hides in a shadow under an overhang behind Kadaz.(hide check 20)
Uriel Monday May 24th, 2004 12:21:22 AM
Uriel looks down at the redoubtable dwarf, his lips turn up in a small smile.
"Friend dwarf, sometimes the effort must be made, regardless of the consequences for the sake of honor and what is right."
Uriel continues, "I would like to get the dragon to notice me and lead it away from this populated area towards either a dead area of the city or another open area. Any ideas?"
Mira Monday May 24th, 2004 9:10:34 AM
Mira overhears Uriel volunteer for a suicide mission. Reaching out she plucks at the paladin's arm, "Uriel! No!" she cries. "It will only kill you and return to terrorize the city once again. Let us wait until it comes in range, about 100 ft. and then we can launch our attacks. Aim for the wings, tear the membranes that we may hinder it's flight."
Mira looks across the river at the dragons circling near the mayor's castle, "maybe we can help out over there" she says pointing in the direction of the noble quarter, "we could creep along the streets and alleys, stay under the eaves and awnings hidden from view."
"What ever we do, we've got to stay together." That said, a worried look crosses the woman's face, "has anyone seen Arm?"
Arm d20+2=21 Monday May 24th, 2004 9:19:09 AM
As Arm leaves Sampsons, he spots the dreaded airborne beast. Instantly he thinks of his crossbow, but just as quickly realizes that it would do very little, if any, damage to it...and quite possibly drawing attention to himself in the process. He retreats back into the inn, where he grabs the redhead by the wrist, saying "We need to leave NOW! The front isn't safe, we need to find another exit!". He then looks for Sampson in an attempt to find out if there is a rear exit or at least a window that they may climb out of. (spot=21)
Conner d20+3=14 Monday May 24th, 2004 9:35:37 AM
Conner looks to the sky and is transfixed for a moment by the sight of the giant wyrmm. Exposed and in the open, the fighter stands, sword at the ready. The blast of lightning snaps him out of his reverie and he immediately recognizes the futility of any action he might take. He scans the ensuing panic and darts into the crowd to assist the fallen gnome to her feet [Ref=14 to avoid being knocked over]
Kadaz Monday May 24th, 2004 3:17:21 PM
Kadaz replies to Uriel. "I doubt there's anything we can do to lead that thing.I'm willing to make a stand here. And Mira, doing nothing will let it know that we're helpless. I'm not going to hide and let that beast terrorize my city."
OOC: Otter: I think this situation absolutely requires that a really futile, stupid gesture be done on somebody's part! Bluto: And we're just the guys to do it.
Evan Monday May 24th, 2004 5:10:49 PM
Evan stands in the middle of the street transfixed by the big blue flying towards the Trade Quarter. Even though it is an evil thing, it is an awesome sight to behold. The ranger gazes in awe as the dragon bears down on the group.
DM Kathy Monday May 24th, 2004 9:33:11 PM
Arm soon realizes that leaving via another exit is not going to make a big difference to an immense flying creature. The only real decision to make is whether to stay put and hope it passes by, or leave and hope to get clear.
The red-haired woman gives him a shaky smile. "Don't suppose you're some kind of hero," she says hopefully.
Outside the panic continues. Connor steps out to try to help the gnome, but she is already back on her feet and running. Now caught in a wave of panicking townsfolk, Connor finds himself buffeted and shoved in the general direction the crowd is moving--away from the dragon.
The great beast continues to draw closer. It opens its mouth again, this time letting out a roar that shakes the very foundations of the buildings around you. It comes closer still--to within about 200 feet--and suddenly you feel an overwhelming sense of dread and terror (Will save DC 25 to avoid being panicked).
You barely have time to register the feeling, though, before the mighty dragon wheels and heads off in another direction. You hear it roar again, farther away.
[Just to clarify--even if you fail the Will save (and you probably will), the panic only lasts as long as you are withing 200 feet of the dragon, and since it almost immediately turned away again, you don't have to describe any lasting running and gibbering. Unless, of course, you want to. :) Arm only needs to make the save if he decides to go outside.]
Mira d20+5=9 Monday May 24th, 2004 10:10:20 PM
Mira lets go of Uriel's arm as the dragon approaches. When it roars she drops her crossbow, and falls to her knees, her hands clasped over her ears, and her eyes squeezed shut as she prays to every god she ever heard tell of.
(Will Save=9, fail)
Evan d20+2=22 Monday May 24th, 2004 10:19:14 PM
Evan continues to stand in the middle of the road, his feet firmly planted in a solid stance. As the great blue beast roars overhead, he tilts his head back to take in it's enormity . His face flushes with excitement as he raises his sword and axe in defiance.
(Will Save=22 (nat 20, success?))
Conner d20+1=12 d20+3=17 Monday May 24th, 2004 11:08:30 PM
Before Conner can reach the fallen gnome she is gone, and a tremendous roar fills his ears. He cannot help but feel overwhelmed [Will=12]. The overwhelming might of the dragon and the panicked crowd swarming around him cause him to lose his senses for the briefest of moments as he is propelled down the street by the surging crowd.
As the dragon breaks away the fighter spots an alcove nearby and forces his way towards it [Str=17]. If successful he will stay in the alcove and wait for a chance to make his way back towards Sampson's and his friends.
Uriel (Almost but not quite...) d20+5=24 Monday May 24th, 2004 11:19:37 PM
Uriel looks at Mira, intensely, "Mira, I ...you are right."
When she asks about Arm, Uriel shrugs, "He said he was running an errand - he wasn't specific."
As the dragon approaches, Uriel draws the bow back towards his chest. Then the dragon roars. Uriels heart quails and he almost maintains his concentration on his bow (Will save:24) but he doesn't.
Uriel's breath rushes out from him in one large exhale and his arm shakes, the arrow drops from his nerveless fingers and the bow falls to the ground.
Kadaz d20+1=15 d20+1=16 Tuesday May 25th, 2004 10:03:10 AM
Kadaz stands in the road determined to fight to save his city. He eyes the dragon over the end of the quarrel when he suddenly realizes what he is actually doing. The panic of the crowd around him infects Kadaz and too is overcome by fear. His crossbow drops to the ground as Kadaz moves to the side to huddle next to Birdie. (will save 15)
Birdie, already hiding in the shadows, beings to whimper and tries to hide behind Kadaz (will save 16).
Arm d20=6 Tuesday May 25th, 2004 3:18:56 PM
Arm takes a brief moment to smile at the woman, saying "I have seen my share of battles, my dear. But right now it is most important that we leave this building before the roof and walls rain down upon us, or worse.".
He takes her hand and, seeing no obvious exit to the rear anyway, decides to chance exiting the main door. Upon doing so, the wyrm is VERY much closer, and Arm feels every fiber of his being convulse as it never has before. He no longer notices that he is holding her hand, simply dropping it and sinking to his knees, his legs no longer able to support him. (will=6)
DM Kathy d20=8 Tuesday May 25th, 2004 8:23:48 PM
Evan is able to stand his ground and watch the dragon as it heads toward the Guild Quarter (yes, a natural 20 is an automatic success).
His companions are not so lucky, reacting in fear and panic as the dragon's aura washes over them.
Connor is swept up by a stampeding crowd, but manages to fight his way out of it.
The red-haired woman pulls her hand free of Arm's and darts back inside Sampson's.
The dragon is definitely moving away now, taking its aura of fear with it. There's no way to tell whether it will come back, though--and you can still see the other dragons wreaking havoc on various other parts of Plateau City. Around you, crowds of people still scream and run about, nearly blinded with panic. Greyish-black smoke begins to drift through the air, and the smell of buring hangs over you like a pall.
Mira Tuesday May 25th, 2004 9:13:04 PM
Unsteady, Mira tries to stand up. Her face is white, but her voice is strong, "Yes, Kadaz, we should not abandon the city." Mira looks in the direction in which the dragon has flown, and adds "maybe we can be of some assitance to those who are co-ordinating a counter attack," then adds more quietly, "or a rescue mission."
She recovers her crossbow from where she let it fall.
Evan Tuesday May 25th, 2004 9:33:46 PM
The ranger gestures wildly after the disappearing dragon. His bright green eyes wild with excitement. Shoving his weapons back into place, he signs rapidly to Uriel and Mira...we must persue it...learn what it is here to do...stop it if we can.
Evan bounces lightly on his feet ready for persuit.
Conner d20+3=11 Tuesday May 25th, 2004 10:40:05 PM
Conner makes his way back to Sampson's and the rest of the party. Along the way he keeps a wary eye for more dragon attacks [Spot=11] and tries to determine where specifically the smoke is coming from.
"I have never one before...well at least not in real life...just my friend here..." the fighter flexes his bicep and the tattoo of a red dragon belches forth a small jet of flame.
Kadaz Tuesday May 25th, 2004 10:53:08 PM
Kadaz moves away from the building and hangs his head in shame. He moves back to where he had stood, picks up his cross bow, and ties it to his pack. "The guard will be mobilizing. I understand that we may not be of much help, but we must do what we can. I say we start fighting fires."
Kadaz pauses a moment and scans the sky. "Why are there so many dragons? I wonder if Maline at the Society for Draconic Research might know. Or if somehow they're involved."
Kadaz tries to remember if there's every been an attack by this many dragons before. And why aren't there more counterattacks from the city?
But for now, it's time prevent more damage to Plateau City. Kadaz starts moving towards the nearest smoke plume.
Uriel Tuesday May 25th, 2004 11:03:40 PM
After the dragon moves on, Uriel kneels down and retrieves his arrow and bow.
His face is pale and drawn but his jaw is resolute. He says to the others, "there is no way for me to stand against that dragon or any others...not now. What I can do is help organized these people into a fire brigade and help prevent hysteria from causing any more deaths. Would you like to help me?" He asks the others.
In any event, Uriel will start to shout out to the people in the streets, "The dragons have passed. They are gone. You must find it within yourselves to calm your fears. We need to organize everyone to help one another. To fight the fires, to help reunite children with their parents."
Uriel continues to shout out variations on this message and gather those about him who want to help. By going into the inns and stables to retrieve buckets and manure (to smother the fire). To take the buckets to the nearby wells.
Arm Wednesday May 26th, 2004 10:22:15 AM
The woman momentarily forgotten, Arm regains his feet and spies Conner then the others in the milling crowds. Making his way over to them, he says, "I thank the gods that you are all well.". Turning to Kadaz, he asks, "Since you are from this city, I must ask....does this happen often? If not, I fear we must put our most recent mission on hold for the moment until we can figure out what is going on and how we can stop it before it happens again. Far more is a stake from this threat, and we must think of the greater good, here...even if it means losing our current assignment.".
DM Kathy Wednesday May 26th, 2004 7:54:10 PM
The party recovers from their shock and begins to look about for ways to respond--that don't involve the suicidal step of actually taking on the dragons.
Kadaz and Uriel begin helping put out the nearest fire--a feed store that proves to be quite a challenge.
Uriels words seem to restore some order; many people seem glad just to have somebody tell them what to do. A bucket brigade is soon established.
[Brent, I'm a city girl, but isn't throwning methane-laden manure on a fire a really bad idea?]
Sounds of general mayhem and chaos continue from other parts of the city, but so far, it loos as if no dragons are coming back in this direction.
Conner d20+3=16 d20+2=21 Wednesday May 26th, 2004 8:07:06 PM
Conner pitches in with Kadaz and Uriel to help put out the feed store. He inserts himself into the line of the bucket brigade and starts hurling water onto the fire.
If Conner spots or hears anyone trapped by the blaze [Spot=16; Listen=21] he will react immediately. He will douse himself with a bucket of water and holding a wet cloth over his nose and mouth, enter the burning building.
Uriel d20+3=18 Wednesday May 26th, 2004 8:24:26 PM
Uriel continues restoring order and working to put out the feed store fire.
As the people work, Uriel's color returns and his voice gathers strength from the success of the efforts of the towns folk.{Diplomacy:18}
{OOC: I guess I could roll a diplomacy roll for my yelling. Also, Kathy manure is not methane laden (Methane gas disperses quickly upon exit from the ...methane ejector :0 and is a byproduct of the digestion process. Manure especially after it is wet, can be used to smother flames by preventing oxygen from fueling the fire - the same way sand does...)}
Evan d20+4=18 Wednesday May 26th, 2004 9:50:30 PM
At first Evan looks angry, then a look of acceptance, and resolve when he realizes that they will not be persuing the big blue.
His disappointment is soon forgotten as he quickly finds work putting out the feed store fire. If there are any wounded the ranger will tend to them. (Heal=18)
Mira d20+5=17 d20+4=7 Wednesday May 26th, 2004 9:57:05 PM
Mira will offer words of encouragement (Diplomacy=17) to those combating the feed store fire. She will mingle with the crowd and try to learn what she can about the dragon attack (Gather Information=7) but she is too frightened to stray far from her party, and everyone seems pretty upset, anyway.
If she finds an opportunity to talk to Uriel quietly, she will suggest that maybe the party should check in at the Flying Pigs Inn to see if their new patroness, Avandri, survived the attack and still requires their services.
Kadaz Wednesday May 26th, 2004 11:35:18 PM
Kadaz throws himself wholeheartedly into fighting the fire at the feed store. It feels good to be doing something constructive in this situation.
Arm d20+2=11 Thursday May 27th, 2004 7:21:48 AM
Arm joins in the efforts to put out the fire at the feed store as well, helping out wherever needed, while at the same time either looking for trapped people OR the return of the dragons (spot=11).
OOC: Brent is right Kathy...the danger that you're talking about is only present when the manure is stored in a sealed area where the gas is allowed to accumulate...water DOES accelerate the production of the gas from the manure (no matter HOW old it is), but as long as the area is reasonably ventilated and the manure isn't used in HIGH quantities...the danger of explosion is VERY minimal, and as Brent said, the fire will be smothered by the manure anyway, so I'd say there's less than a .1% chance of an explosion.
P.S. I'M a city boy too...that's just one of NUMEROUS useless facts I have stored away... :-)
DM Kathy Thursday May 27th, 2004 7:22:19 PM
Evan finds numerous people with miscellaneous bruises, cuts, and burns, which he is able to set right; he also manages to splint a broken arm.
Mira and Uriel are successful in calming people down, helped out by the fact that the dragons seem to be elsewhere, and by the example the group is setting by fighting the fire. Soon, others pitch in.
The feed store proves to be beyond saving, and once you realize this, you begin to work on keeping the buildings nearby from catching alight.
Conner spots nobody trapped in the store, but he does spot some poeple lingering uncertainly inside the neighboring buildings. Perhaps they ought to be evacuated.
Arm keeps a weather eye out for dragons, but does not spot any returning.
Conner Thursday May 27th, 2004 8:54:14 PM "Hey You! Yes, you in the building there!" Conner yells up to the figures huddled by windows in the neighbouring building. You had best get out of there in case the fire spreads. Come down here and help with the bucket brigade.
Conner watches to see if any respond.
Arm Friday May 28th, 2004 12:25:47 PM
Arm pitches in to make sure that the buildings surrounding the feed store do not catch fire as well.
Uriel Friday May 28th, 2004 12:40:21 PM
Uriel continues the work of trying to save the area from fire. He looks to Arm and says,"Could you play some inspirational music to calm the people down and keep their minds from the deaths of their friends?"
Uriel watches to see if the folks that Conner is yelling at follow his directions. He will be ready to lend Conner a hand if it comes to that.
Kadaz Friday May 28th, 2004 2:55:22 PM
Kadaz works like a fiend, yelling at everyone to hurry up and not let the fire spread. Occasionally he glances at the sky but he doesn't allow this to interfere with his concerns on the ground.
Evan Sunday May 30th, 2004 10:03:40 PM
Evan continues to provide first aid to those in need.
Mira d20=10 Sunday May 30th, 2004 10:06:57 PM
Mira works with Evan to tend the injured. She checks the sky periodically for signs of dragons.[Spot=10]
DM Kathy Monday May 31st, 2004 9:28:59 PM
Conner shouts up at the building for the people to leave, but they do not. It's difficult to see clearly, but they seem to be too frightened.
Uriel stands by Conner, ready to help if needed.
Arm and Kadaz continue to work on protecting the adjoining buildings, which proves more successful than trying to put out the fire. It begins to look as though if you keep at it, you'll be able to save everything but the feed store.
Mira and Evan tend the injured. Seeing this, people begin seeking them out, carrying or assisting the wounded. Thus far, they are orderly, but the sheer numbers threaten to overwhelm the two well-meaning adventurers.
Conner d20-2=3 Monday May 31st, 2004 11:41:56 PM
Conner shakes his head and mutters something about 'mice' beneath his breath. He enters the adjoining building to try and persuade [diplomacy=3] the residents to come out on to the street until the danger has passed.
Evan Monday May 31st, 2004 11:45:27 PM
Evan continues to minister to the wounded. He feels somewhat overwhelmed by the volume of people in need. Sweat pouring from his forehead, he continues his work. He signs to Mira, hoping she will act as his interpreter.
Mira Monday May 31st, 2004 11:48:39 PM
The sorcerer follows the ranger as he does his work. She lends support where she can and offers words of comfort to the wounded. When there is a moment of respite, Mira seeks out the paladin, Uriel, and asks for his help with the injured.
Uriel Tuesday June 1st, 2004 12:25:21 AM
Uriel will ask amongst the crowd of people helping if they know any of the people huddled next to the buildings. If so then he will see if the people could be coaxed out with familiar faces.
When Mira comes looking for Uriel because of the healing, he shakes his head. "Of course. There is too much to do and not enough of those to do it. Arm can you keep at this while I help Mira and Evan?"
Uriel will also try to help those injured. He can Lay On Hands for a total of 4 hit points - splitting it into a couple of the most critical patients. Also, if anyone seems to be in a life threatening condition, he will use the wand on them.
Kadaz Tuesday June 1st, 2004 6:28:47 AM
Kadaz looks at the progress so far. Losing the feed store is not good. But he feels better about saving the neighboring homes. He redoubles his efforts to stop this fire.
Arm Tuesday June 1st, 2004 8:12:18 AM
Arm unslings his lute to begin playing, but then realizes that more work needs to be done to save the adjoining buildings...while feeling sorry for the people in distress, he feels that it's best to save the other buildings BEFORE more are lost.
DM Kathy Tuesday June 1st, 2004 8:16:44 PM
Conner enters the home, and finds a young boy of perhaps eleven, clinging tightly to two younger children, who cling just as tightly to him. In the background, a baby wails.
"Ma said we was to stay right here till she got back," the boy says, an edge of hysteria to his voice. "We're not to go out or we'll get in trouble. Have you seen my Ma?"
Uriel, meanwhile, asks around for anyone who knows the family, and finds a middle-aged woman who seems willing to try to talk to them. She goes into the house.
The wounded that you are seeing are not seriously hurt, and mostly need bandages and reassurance. You are (barely) able to keep up with the influx.
The efforts to save the nearby buildings seem to be paying off, but until the feed store fire has burned itself out, you'll need to keep at it. Anybody doing this, please make a Constitution check (DC 8).
Evan d20+4=12 d20+4=7 Tuesday June 1st, 2004 9:18:45 PM
Evan continues helping anyone who needs help. Once the influx of injured die down, he heads over to the burning feed store to lend a hand or maybe give someone a break.
(Heal check 12, fortitude check 7)
Conner d20-2=6 Tuesday June 1st, 2004 9:24:03 PM
"You are a brave lad to look after the children so well." Conner gets down on one knee and looks the boy in the eyes. "Your Ma will be proud, but only if everyone is safe... I'll help explain to your Ma. She will understand that you did the right thing by coming outside."
Conner offers to help carry the children down in his arms.
[Diplomacy=6]
Uriel d20+4=12 Tuesday June 1st, 2004 10:33:48 PM
If the woman seems successful, and Uriel is not needed for the healing right now, he returns to helping with the fire and morale of the people working in the area. (Fortitude check:12)
Mira d20+5=24 Tuesday June 1st, 2004 10:49:18 PM
If Conner exits the building with the children, Mira will rush over to help him. If he will let her, she will take the baby in one arm, and reach out a hand to clasp the hand of one of the other children. She will speak quiet words of encouragement in an attempt to keep the children calm. (Diplomacy=24)
Arm d20=13 Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 5:55:05 AM
Determined to protect the surrounding buildings until they are no longer in danger of catching fire, Arm valiantly continues with his efforts. (CON=13)
Kadaz d20+3=17 Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 6:49:02 AM
Kadaz eyes the fire warily. As a city kid he heard stories of fire sweeping through blocks of homes. He keeps working at containing the fire to only the feed store. (con check 17)
DM Kathy d20+2=18 Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 8:24:42 PM
"We're supposed to stay here," the boy insists frantically, clutching his younger brother and sister. Conner's reasoning does not seem to have had any effect.
"Body, dear," a woman's voice calls. Uriel's volunteer enters the house. "Body, it's Tuella from next door. Why don't you bring the little ones outside? All this smoke isn't healthy for them. Then we'll find your mother and explain."
That seems to do the trick; the boy allows the younger ones to be led away, then picks up the baby and follows. Outside, Mira is on hand to help, and the children are looked after and kept safe.
Evan continues with the first aid. He also tries his hand at fighting the fires, but before too long exhaustion claims him and he needs to take a breather.
Uriel, Arm, and Kadaz continue to work until the fire burns itself out about an hour later.
It is the middle of the afternoon. A pall of smoke hangs over the city, and a steady stream of wounded is filing toward the temples for healing. On your street, the feed store still smolders, but any danger of it catching other buildings alight has passed. Merchants with soot-grimed faces step up to shake your hands and thank you for saving their homes and businesses.
The childrens' mother has not yet come to claim them, but "Tualla from next door" has offered to take charge of them until she gets back. Her eyes echo the unspoken worry that perhaps the mother won't come back at all; there were casualties today.
For now, however, it appears you have done all you could. You are sooty and sweaty and exhausted, and the smell of smoke clings to your nose and nags the back of your throat.
Conner d20+5=9 Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 9:15:47 PM
Conner does not let the boy's mistrust of him dampen his spirits. "You're a bright lad, Body" he says to the boy once they are outside. "I'll look in on you later if that's alright."
Conner leaves the children and goes back to what is left of the feed store. Seeing that all is well under control the fighter begins to make his way back to Sampson's. He looks about for Amy to see that she is safe and then purchases a keg of ale. Conner slings the keg onto his shoulder and grabs a fistful of mugs on the way back out.
"Thirsty work!" he calls out to the party, a row of pearly white teeth flashes out from his soot blackened face. The keg is already tapped and in no-time a row of full mugs is ready for the parched fire fighters.
Kadaz Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 9:46:27 PM
Kadaz accepts the thanks of the merchants gratefully.
He then speaks to the others. "There's nothing more here to be done. Let's return home and see how it fared during this disaster. Then we must plan how to accomplish our next mission."
Mira Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 10:06:45 PM
Mira accepts a mug of beer from Conner, and closes her eyes in a small moment of bliss, as the cool amber liquid washes away the aching dryness of her throat.
The woman answers Kadaz, "Once we get cleaned up, maybe we should call on Avandri at the Flying Pigs Inn. You know, to see if she survived the attack and still requires our services."
Uriel - Bone Weary Thursday June 3rd, 2004 2:17:44 AM
Because he is blackened by the soot and reeking of the dirty work that went on this day, Uriel has an amused look on his face when the merchants and shopkeepers thank him.
As Uriel nods in agreement with the others about checking into the welfare of their apartment and on checking Avandri, his jaw begins to clench a few times.
He says, "I will be along to the Inn shortly. I have one thing to attend to."
After the others have headed back towards the apartment, Uriel goes next door to the house with the children. "Tualla is it?" he asks of the neighbor watching the children.
In a low voice to Tualla, Uriel says, "Here is something to help watch over these children while their mother is missing. May Domi bring her home safe to the children. If the news turns badly for the family or if you need more to watch after them until the mother returns... or...well just in case, you can contact me here." Uriel gives her directions to the group's apartment, hoping it is indeed still there! {Uriel gives her 15 GPs}
After making sure she is ok with the children and stressing that she can come to Uriel or the others if they need help, Uriel hurries back to the apartment, hoping for refreshment and a good solid dunking in a bucket of water to freshen up.
Arm Thursday June 3rd, 2004 5:50:01 AM
Arm wipes an arm (hehehehe) across his eyes, leaving him with somewhat of a "reverse raccoon" appearance. He accepts the thanks of the merchants, as well as the proferred mug of ale, the latter with much gusto. After a few moments of relaxation he asks Kadaz directions to the bath house that he recently used, and making the party known of his intentions, heads wearily off in that direction, hoping that building is still intact. After he bathes, he will return to the apartment, assuming that THAT still stands as well.
Evan Thursday June 3rd, 2004 9:22:18 AM
Evan lies sleeping on the rug in front of the fireplace, exhaustion overtaking him.
DM Kathy Thursday June 3rd, 2004 9:07:06 PM
Tualla assures Uriel that she and the children will be fine until the mother returns. "They can play with my own little ones," she says. She tries to refuse the money, but reluctantly accepts if Uriel presses it on her.
Luckily, the bathhouse, Sampson's, and your apartment are all still standing. Sampson's is doing a brisk business with people trying to clear away the smoke or steady their shaking nerves.
The apartment, when you reach it, does smell faintly of smoke, as does most of the neighborhood. Opening the windows does not help--in fact, it makes things a little worse.
You begin to recover somewhat and discuss strategy. The first step is probably to figure out whether your client is still alive--do you go this afternoon, or wait until tomorrow when things have calmed down a bit?
Mira Thursday June 3rd, 2004 9:39:33 PM
The sorcerer crouches over the exhausted ranger, and her eyes shine with unshed tears. Exhausted, she bows her head, and the tears course down her cheeks.
She places a hand gently on Evan's roughly cut blond hair, now grimmy with sweat and soot, while the other clasps her silver and jade pendant in the shape of a dragon. Her shoulders shake and the tears keep coming.
Uriel Friday June 4th, 2004 2:13:48 AM
Seeing the crowds at the bath house, Uriel opts for the more expedient head-in-the-trough method of removing soot and grime (crude but effective).
Afterwards he enters the apartment and sees Mira crying and Evan on the floor. He is unable to hide his alarm at Mira's tears. Uriel says, "Is Evan harmed? What happened?" He grabs at the healing wand and moves towards him. When he realizes it is just exhaustion, he looks embarassed by his reaction.
"Er, uhm, yeah, right. Well ok I am going to lie down now. I guess we could go check on the client tomorrow," Uriel articulates in a brilliant display of his oratory abilities.
He moves to one of the bedrooms, removing armor and equipment. He strips off the smoke stained tunic and linens. The last thing he does before he jumps into the bed is lean his sheathed longsword on the wall next to the head of the bed, within easy reach.
Arm Friday June 4th, 2004 5:46:07 AM
After returning from the bath house, Arm, seeing that Uriel has already retired for the day, suggests to the rest that it's best THEY get some rest as well, then heads to his room, where he immediately falls asleep.
Evan Friday June 4th, 2004 8:28:28 AM
Into the depths of Evan's exhaustion, a soft touch reaches to awaken him. His eyes blink open to gaze up into Mira's lovely green eyes. He seems surprised and confused by the tears he sees there and his arms come up to pull Mira down next to him. He holds her close, kissing away her tears, until sleep once again takes him away.
Mira Friday June 4th, 2004 7:06:09 PM
The sorcerer yields, and is pulled down beside the ranger. Tears of sadness and fatigue give way to the deep sleep of the truly exhausted.
At sunrise, Mira rises, packs a few personal items in her pack, and heads for the baths. She returns shortly afterwards, hair tightly braided in it's customary severe plait, and skin slightly red from the thorough scrubbing required to remove the dirt and soot from the previous day's labours. There are dark circles under her eyes.
Back at the apartment, she makes a small fire, and puts a kettle on to boil.
Kadaz Friday June 4th, 2004 9:08:23 PM
Once the group returns home Kadaz tiredly pulls his gear off and dumps it at the end of his bed. He slumps into a chair and stairs at the wall absentmindely for 5 minutes, thinking about fires and dragons.
Rousing himself he goes to the neighborhood hand pump and draws a bucket of water. He pulls out a doggie treat, feeds it to Birdie, and then, before the dog can react, starts washing the grit and smoke out of his fur.
Once the dog is clean, Kadaz takes his turn in the local bath house. After he is clean, Kadaz carefully beats out his clothes, hangs them up, and then collapses into bed. His dreams are restless and his tossing and turning prevents Birdie from getting comfortable on the foot of the bed.
Conner Saturday June 5th, 2004 9:42:48 PM
Conner returns the now empty keg to Sampson along with mugs. His thirst quenched, the fighter heads to the baths and cleans himself up. He takes the oportunity to scrub the soot and grime from his clothes and equipment before returning to the apartment for a much needed rest.
DM Kathy Sunday June 6th, 2004 9:42:31 PM
By the following morning, everyone is feeling more or less normal. You are able to scrub away most of the dirt and grime, and everyone's throat feels a little bit better. Outdoors, the city still smells faintly of smoke and ash, but there is no visible smoke in the air.
When Conner returns the keg, he learns the sad news that Summer was killed during the attack.
But not all the news is bad. Tualla stops by early in the morning to return Uriel's gold and report that the childrens' mother returned safe and sound.
