Family Troubles

DM Kathy
Sunday May 9th, 2004 10:30:48 PM

A few days later, even as you work out how to divide the spoils of your latest success, there is a knock at the door. You open it to find a young boy bearing a message.

"Lady said to give you this," he says. He hangs about for a bit in hopes of a tip, then departs.

The message is written in a neat, attractive hand on plain cream-colored paper:

"Dear Friends,

I hope you will excuse my temerity in writing to you, even though we have never been introduced. I have heard of your exploits, and the assistance you were able to offer that good artisan, and I beg that you will likewise help me.

Please meet me tomorrow at the Flying Pigs Inn in the Outcast Quarter. Take whatever precautions you like to ensure your safety, for I swear to you that I bear for you no ill intent.

You are my last hope. I implore you to come to the inn and listen to my plea in person.

Yours,

Avandri"

Evan  d6=2
Monday May 10th, 2004 10:20:28 AM

Evan rolls the die and is grateful to discover that there will be no despute over the fact that he gets to choose last. He does point out to the group that he set Shakka's cure Light Wound in his room with the rest of his stuff but, as he conveys through sign language to Uriel and Mira, doesn't feel as if setting something aside at this time for Shakka would be of best benefit to the rest of the group as they don't know when Shakka will be returning.

During the next few days, Evan creates a nice sign and takes it to the tavern, asking if he can post it. It advertizes for a person of divinty, one who wouldn't mind working with a small group of adventurers in the capacity of health administration.

After a few nice lazy days, where Evan takes Mira and Ariel out for rides in the countryside, Evan begins to grow a little restless. So it is with some happiness and excitement, that Evan prepares to go meet the woman at the Flying Pigs Inn.

Kadaz
Monday May 10th, 2004 3:23:51 PM

[Old business]

After Evan's roll it is clear that Kadaz has first pick of the magic items. "I will chose the magical chain mail. I promise that I will use it in defense of my friends and to the benefit of all." He gathers it up carefully. "Mira and Uriel, you're next, then Conner and Evan. What's left will be, for now, Shakka's."

"As for the coin, I suggest that out of the purse we each take 10 gp and use the remaining for group expenses."

But there was still the problem of a name. Without a group name those seeking their assistance had to start their messages with "Dear Friends." That will never do. How about:

Plateau's Finest
Birdie's Best
The Quiet Ones
The Fellowship of the Plateau
The Guarded Ones
The Plateau Investigators (this idea brings on the strange urge to wear a fedora)

Ah well, none of these quite hit the spot. Maybe inspiration will strike soon.

[New business]

Kadaz has spent the last several days working out in the chain mail. He wasn't use to wearing metal armor - it had been reserved for higher ranking guards than himself. But his new armor proved to be an excellent fit and not much more of a hindrance than his studded leather had been.

But one can practice only so long. When the request for their assisance came in Kadaz was as eager as anyone to go to the meeting at The Flying Pigs Inn.

Mira
Monday May 10th, 2004 5:47:02 PM

[Old business]

Mira looks sideways at the paladin, and asks, "this okay with you?" as she retrieves the magical wand. "By the way, you should keep the other one, the one from before, the one for healing, since you seem to be the only one who can weild it properly." The sorcerer returns the new rod to her belt, and collects her 10 pieces of gold. "Kadaz, will you keep track of the money and goods the party holds in common? Maybe Conner will let you use his journal?" Mira will stick around to see what the other's choose, and if anything remains she volunteers, "I can exchange what's left for vouchers or gold at The Catacombs, or we can store the items here for use as the party sees fit."

"We do need a name," she responds to the dwarf, "although Friends isn't bad, I think it's been used by another group already. Let us think on this one a while."

[New business]

Mira exercises her mind during the down time. She tries to get Uriel to spare an hour from his morning routine, to teach her what he knows of Evan's language of dancing fingers. She tries to learn more about the paladin and his motivations. Later, she practices 'signing' with the ranger. She enjoys their country forrays around Plateau City. After the evening meal, she slips out, giving the excuse of 'a trip to the bath house'. The sorcerer is gone until late at night. When she returns, she does indeed give the appearance of having returned from a bath, with a shiny, clean face, wet hair coiled and pinned in a bun at the back of her head, and a smile of smug self-satisfaction. The smell of soap does not quite hide the alchemical odors given off by her clothing.

Uriel
Monday May 10th, 2004 8:51:44 PM

[Old Business]
"That's fine," Uriel answers quietly, "Since I seem to be the only one who uses a bow, I will take the arrows." Uriel quickly sorts the arrows with a mix of all three in all the quivers.

While he does this, he says, "We could be the Band of Fives - since we seem to enjoy the rolling fives so much."

[New Business]
Uriel seems glad to be able to help Mira learn sign language. Uriel lets Mira know through sign that he hopes to one day, start some vocational training and shelter for the street orphans and other indigents of the city.

Conner
Monday May 10th, 2004 10:02:42 PM

[Old Business]

"I will take what remains after teh others have chosen" the fighter states. "I have little use for what remains, but would trade at the Catacombs for something of more use to me. Let the others chose first."

[New Business]

Conner takes 10 gp for his purse and hands his journal to Kadaz. "Never was one for writing, best you keep this."

Uriel
Monday May 10th, 2004 10:27:42 PM

"Conner - you don't want the mithril shirt? Wouldn't that be of use?" Uriel queries.

Conner
Monday May 10th, 2004 10:47:22 PM

"Uriel my friend, the Mithral shirt would best suit another, for I lack the agility to take advantage of such fine chain. I would but trade it for something more substantive."

DM Kathy
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 12:03:09 AM

Eager to get started on a new mission, you go to the Flying Pigs Inn to meet the mysterious Avandri. You make your way to the Outcast Quarter, home of those who don't quite fit in anywhere else. The sights here are astonishing--was that an ogre?--and it is easy to get distracted.

Nevertheless, you are able to locate the Flying Pigs Inn without too much trouble, and you step into its hushed, dimly-lit interior. You pause, looking curiously about, and are approached by a human woman. Slender and graceful, she wears a flowing dress with a soft hood pulled modestly up over her hair.

"I am Avandri," she says in a soft, cultured voice. "Please, won't you come and sit down?"

She leads you to a table toward the back. You do not see her gesture, but a centaur waitress is there almost immediately to take your luncheon order.

"Please allow me to buy you a meal," Avandri says. "So your jouney will not have been in vain, even if you refuse the job--as I pray you do not."

Arm - better late than never... :-)  d20+7=12
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 7:06:55 AM

[Old Business]

Arm chooses the bracers for himself and deposits the 10 gp into a pouch, grateful that the bickering has ended, and hopes that it doesn't start up again.

"Actually, I'm rather fond of 'The Guarded Ones', but the final decision, of course, should be up to the group." he says to those assembled.

[New Business]

Arm seats himself at the table in the Flying Pigs Inn, and questions Avandri, "You said you had a proposition for us. We are obviously interested, since we showed up here. So pray tell us, what do you have in mind?". (diplomacy=12)

Evan  d20+7=14 d20+7=25
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 10:32:27 AM

(Old Business)
Evan looks over the remaining treasure, looking to Conner to make sure its ok for him to choose next. The pearl would be of no use to Evan but as Conner said, Evan could also take the leftovers to the catacombs. Evan fingers the mithral shirt for a moment, gazing at the pretty armor. It would certainly benefit Conner but it feels light enough that even Evan would feel comfortable. Evan picks up the mithral shirt and offers it to Conner who is supposed to choose before he does. If Conner again refuses the armor, then Evan will take the armor, smiling wryly in that he had hoped to get armor for Mira and ended up with armor for himself instead.

Evan doesn't comment on any of the names yet because he thinks it may be a bit soon to find the perfect name for the group.

Evan noticed Mira's strange behavior. She had been gone for so long that Evan had been very close to going after her. It was with some relief that he greeted Mira when she returned. However, her expression, along with the amount of time she had been gone confuses Evan a little. He had been under the impression that Mira had no 'special' friend in Plateau City yet her behavior is that of someone who had just spent a very pleasant evening with another. Or perhaps Evan is just reading too much into what had happened. Or maybe Evan was misreading Mira's behavior towards him....With a small sigh, Evan is glad he is always silent as this way no one will realize the turmoil he suffers as he tries to figure out his own feelings for Mira.

(New Business)

Evan takes a seat at the far end of the table to allow those who can speak to be able to interact better with the woman. While she explains her plight, Evan will watch the room as he listens.

Tuesday May 11th, 2004 4:56:19 PM

Uriel surveys the unusual surroundings with curiousity. "This is incredible."

After they enter the inn, and meet Avandri, Uriel says, "Thank you for the offer of a meal. We hope that we can be of assistance to you."

After they sit Uriel will try to position himself to better see the unusual citizens of this quarter but he obviously too distracted to notice anything subtle. {Spot:7 Listen:18}

Mira  d20+2=17 d20+4=12
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 5:41:56 PM

Mira takes a seat next to Evan. Turning to face the ranger she raises her right hand and draws a ? in the air, after which she places her upturned hands before her chest and makes a grasping movement towards her body. With a smile she points to Evan, then she places her open hand with the thumb and index finger held an inch or two apart, at mid-chest. As her hand moves straight out from her chest, the two fingers come together. Finally, Mira raises her hand, fingers curved in the form of a 'C' to her mouth.*

As she waits for Evan to answer, she raises her hand and hails the centaur waitress, placing a request for a bottle of wine. When the woman named "Avandri" offers lunch, Mira requests the special of the day.

The business of ordering taken care of, the sorcerer turns to study the attractive woman (Sense Motive=17) She studies the woman's clothing, hair-style and ornamention to see if it gives any clues to her identity (Gather Info=12) as she listens for her answer to Arm's questions.

[More Old Business]
The fighter once again declines the mithral shirt and watches Evan don the armor. He notes how well it suits the lean ranger and how easily he moves in it. While the fighter admires the workmanship and quality of the chain, he thinks it would be too delicate for himself.

"I shall take the pearl of power and anything else left over to the catacombs and see what I can get for it, if the rest of you are satisfied".

[New Business]

Conner takes a seat at the table in the Flying Pigs Inn and scans the crowd for trouble [Spot=17] He has been in rougher bars than this while stationed in the hinterlands, and remains non-plussed by the variety of races patronizing the inn.

Kadaz
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 6:57:20 PM

"Miss Avandri" says Kadaz. "Thank you very much for your kind offer. I will listen to your proposition with great interest."

Kadaz leans forward in his seat eyes intent on this new woman, ready to take in every detail.

DM Kathy
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 8:43:54 PM

The Taur server takes your order and departs. Avandri does not order anything, although there is a glass of wine on the table in front of her.

Avandri lifts the hood from her brown hair and lets it fall, so you can see her face more clearly. She is attractive, with an air of obvious refinement and quality. Her slender hands toy with her wineglass as she speaks.

"My grandfather Daval was an adventurer, a rather successful one." She smiles. "No need to pretend to have heard of him. His success was not the kind that brings fame, but he did quite well for himself, well enough to purchase Wycklea."

Her smile grows wistful. "Wycklea is an estate, on the second plateau. I know I am biased, but I think it the most beautiful place in all the Wold. It is my home, you see--or it was, for many years."

She sighs, and continues. "My parents died when I was small, and my grandfather raised me at Wycklea. My cousin Sarla also lost her parents at a young age, so she, too came to stay. We were the only family each other had--Grandfather, Sarla, and me--and for a long time we were as close as close can be.

"But Sarla changed as she grew older. She became more and more concerned with wealth, and the things wealth could buy. She began spending time with a group of wealthy young ne'er-do-wells from the local estates--and spending money with them, too. More money than we could afford."

She gives a self-depricating little laugh. "We were not wealthy, you know--not really. Grandfather had put nearly everything he had into the estate, and although it was prosperous, it could not meet the demands that Sarla was now placing upon it.

"Grandfather tried to get her to stop, cutting off her allowance and so on. But by then, taught and encouraged by her new friends, she had become a schemer and a manipulator. It was all too easy for her to evade Grandfather's strictures.

"At last Grandfather had had enough. It broke his heart to have to do it, but he made out a new will disinheriting Sarla. He intended to make this generally known, to prevent Sarla from borrowing upon her expectations.

"Before he could do this, however, he--" she pauses, swallows, then contineus, "he died."

She takes another pause to compose herself, and then continues, "Before I knew what was happening, Sarla had produced a fradulent will, naming herself as heir and disinheriting me. I'm not sure how, but she got the courts to uphold her claim." Her lip wobbles alarmingly, but she controls it.

"Sarla has been in possession of Wycklea for some months now," Avandri says, her voice now noticably agitated. "I cannot find out what condition the estate is in, or all the dependents--" she looks up at you.

"People depend on Wycklea, you know," she continues a little more calmly. "For their livelihoods. If Sarla runs the place into the ground, as I fear she will, then where will those people turn?"

She looks imploringly at you, "I must find out what's going on at Wycklea. I particularly need to know what forces Sarla has gathered around her, what 'proof' she has of her claim, and which officials support her in it." Looking thoughtful, she continues more slowly, "I would also like for you to talk to Sarla. Reason with her. I'm prepared to share the estate with her, but she won't speak with me or even allow me on the property."

Avandri bites her lip and looks uncomfortable, "I'm afraid I haven't much to pay you with now," she says. "I am able to offer you an advance, however, and more if I can recover Wycklea--depending on what condition it's in by then. Will you help me?"

As she speaks, you have time to notice some things about Avandri. The dress she's wearing is made from very good material. Although simple in design, it is extremely well-made and probably quite expensive--or at least, it was when it was new. You can't help but notice the frayed cuffs, though, or the places where it's been mended with tiny, ladylike stitches.

Mira finds that she has a hard time reading Avandri. She is reserved and rather quiet, not giving much away. You do get the sense, though, that her love for her grandfather and her anxiety over the estate are quite real.

Mira  d20+5=15
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 9:17:56 PM

As the woman recounts her tale and petitions the group, Mira removes her glasses, and polishes the smudges off using the sleeve of her tunic. Repositioning her spectacles, the sorcerer fixes the woman with her green eyes, and enquires, "do you have a copy of your grandfather's true will, or do you know where we could find it?" (Diplomacy=15)

From past experience, Mira knows that family relations are not always as they seem at first glance. Why, just recently there was the case of the twin sisters; one good, and one evil. Before the party accepts this next request, they would do well to verify this woman's claims.

Mira continues, "Is there anyone who can corroborate your story?"

While waiting for the woman to answer, or for other's to ask their questions, the green-eyed sorcerer with make discreet hand signals for both Evan and Uriel to see.*

*What do you make of this?

Uriel  d20+2=22 d20+2=9
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 11:34:40 PM

Uriel forcibly focuses on the tale and the woman, trying to ignore the unusual scenery.

"I am sorry for the loss of your Grandfather...and your cousin," Uriel says sincerely. He maintains eye contact while he says this to try to get a sense of her motives {Sense Motive:Natural 20!}

"Without meaning to sound insensitive, I also have some questions. First, you mentioned what motivated your cousin, but did not say what your own motivations are. It is clear that you are concerned with the estate and with the people who make their livelihood there but what is your stake in this? Also, do you know any of the names of the young rakes that your cousin associates with? And finally, how did your grandfather die? Were the circumstances at all unusual?"

To Mira, in sign...
*dont know... would like to believe... I understand your concern... we should be careful
...research well her story

OOC:sorry for the second roll, too quick on the roll button.

Conner
Tuesday May 11th, 2004 11:37:04 PM

Conner listens to the woman's sad tale with some degree of disbelief. He holds his tongue for the time being.

Arm  d20=12
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 5:51:31 AM

Like Conner, Arm reserves further comments until the questions put forth to her have been answered. He also shares Conner's suspicions, feeling that there is much that they are not being told. (sense motive=12)

Evan
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 9:49:04 AM

Evan relaxes after he's made sure that there is no one taking any undue notice of their group. As they listen to the woman's story, he takes note of Mira's question. Taking her hand in his affectionately, he signs into the palm of her hand. <i>If there are city officials involved, there may be nothing we can do. But find out the names of the officials.</i>

Kadaz
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 10:07:08 PM

Kadaz's mind is racing, full of with ideas about how to verify Avandri's story, research how Sarla could have accomplished this action, and how to gather information on Wycklea. But now best let Avandri finish her story.

DM Kathy
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 10:40:09 PM

"Alas," says Avandri to Mira, "the only copy of the will I know about was at Wycklea. I fear Sarla may have found and destroyed it. Grandfather had a man of affairs here in Plateau City, though, and I have some hopes that he may have a copy. I have been trying to find him so that he can verify my story and perhaps provide his copy of the true will. This is what I will be working on while you investigate Sarla."

Avandri listnens intently to Uriel's questions. "I am concerned for the welfare of those on the estate," she confirms. "But more than that, Wycklea is my home. It is really the only home I have ever known; I came there when I was quite small, you see." She frowns. "Jarvis and his crowd. They were the ones she spend the most time with." She looks a little alarmed at Uriel's last question. "Unusual? I don't think so. He had been ill off and on for a while; the healers and the apothecary said it was only a matter of time. Why?" she now sounds quite agitated. "Do you think Sarla had something to do with it?"

Uriel senses that Avandri is telling the truth about Wycklea being her home, and about her grandfather's death. He also senses that she bears the group no ill will, although she hasn't told them everything.

Arm believes Avandri's tale.

Connor, who grew up nearby, seems to recall hearing of a retired adventurer living on an estate who was raising two nieces. He tentatively desides that although Sarla and Avandri are granddaughters and not nieces, they are probably the family he heard about. Other than those bare facts, though, he doesn't remember hearing anything about the family.

Uriel
Wednesday May 12th, 2004 11:10:01 PM

Uriel leans forward and says, "I am sorry to have distressed you Avandri. I only offer up the fortuitous timing of his demise and how it benefits Sarla. It is more likely she just saw an opportunity when he passed away."

He sits back and says, "I am not sure what we can do, but I would like to try. Do you have anything else you would like to mention?"

Arm  d20=17
Thursday May 13th, 2004 6:33:42 AM

Arm nods in agreement with Uriel's words and adds, "Yes, we meant no disrespect to you, my lady. We are merely trying to form a picture of the entire situation...if Sarla is as unscrupulous (sp?) as you say, it's entirely possible that she may have arranged for your grandfather's early demise. Since he WAS in ill health, that seems to be less and less of a possibility, but we shall keep it in the back of our minds nonetheless, as many times in the past it has been used as the reason for death when other factors were involved. Anyway, as my friend said, if you have any more information regarding this matter, it would be much appreciated.". (sense motive=17)

Conner
Thursday May 13th, 2004 7:31:28 AM

Conner reflects back on his childhood spent in the middle plateau. Remembering nothing of importance to the decision at hand he remains quiet.

Evan
Thursday May 13th, 2004 8:15:35 AM

Evan signs to Mira, to be passed along to the woman. <i>Who is your man of affairs here in town? Will he speak openly to us? Do you trust him?</i>

Kadaz  d20+1=16
Thursday May 13th, 2004 4:14:05 PM

Kadaz has listened to the questions and answers and now that he's finished his meal he's ready to ask his own. He has had time to collect his thoughts and so asks a series of questions on one topic, waits for the answers, and then goes on.

"Miss Avandri, if we are to visit Wycklea we need to have a reason that explains our presence. If we present ourself and start questioning Sarla she will become suspicious immediately. The longer she is unaware of our investigation the better chance we will have of discovering the truth. So, what is going on there that might bring a party like ours to Wycklea?"

"Furthermore, Sarla sounds like a well-prepared woman. No doubt she has followers and spies among the staff and residents. Who was close to your sister? Any new staff hired lately at her suggestion?"

"You say Jarvis is a young rake who his her friend. What estate and family is he from? What does he look like? Who are his friends and family? Has Sarla known him long?"

"What about your friends or trusted servants? Do you have any staff you would trust with your life? Could you provide us with an introduction or letter of recommendation to someone you trust who can guide us around the estate or at least provide some assistance?"

"About your father, are there any of his companions left, ones he went adventuring with? Any old friends who are likely to know his mind? Was he treated by a doctor in his illness?"

"And finally, about Wycklea itelf. Can you provide us with a map of the estate and the manor itself? Do you know of or suspect any secret or concealed entrances?"

"I apologize for the length of my questions. But I am sure you realize that the more information we have the greater the chance of uncovering what Sarla is doing and righting this wrong."

As Avandri answers Kadaz tries to determine how sincere she sounds. (sense motive 16)

(OOC: All those episodes of Upstairs/Downstairs may finally prove useful!)

Mira
Thursday May 13th, 2004 6:26:14 PM

The sorcerer translates for Evan and adds his question to the many that have been asked. She observes admiringly, as the dwarf asks his questions and explains himself.

I wonder what his story is she thinks to herself. Kedaz is much more than he seems at first glance.

DM Kathy
Thursday May 13th, 2004 9:44:18 PM

Avandri accepts Uriel's apology graciously, then says to him and Arm, "I can't think of anything else; I'm sorry."

Then Kadaz asks his questions, and Avandri seems to be doing her best to answer them.

"I am afraid there is not much at Wycklea. It is an out-of-the way spot, with little but its soil and its people to recommend it." She smiles faintly. "I always liked it that way, but now I see what a problem it presents for you. I am sorry for it, but I have heard that you are all quite clever. I'm sure you will think of something."

"Sarla never paid much heed to the staff. Most of them stayed on after she took over. I don't recall her suggesting anyone be hired, but then, she would not have spoken to me about that anyway. That would have been Grandfather's decision."

"Jarvis is a young man from a neighboring estate. Sarla and I have known him and his family all our lives. I am not sure of his friends." She looks faintly amused. "I was never fashionable enough for their smart set, you see." She gives you a description of Jarvis.

She hesitates at the next question, then reluctantly shakes her head. "I'm afraid there isn't anybody. They all depend upon the estate for their livelihood, you see, and at the moment, that means pleasing Sarla. I cannot ask any of them to risk helping me--and anyway, I cannot be completely sure of any of them. Not when their livelihoods are at stake."

She chuckles a little at the next question. "My father died some years ago, good Sir Dwarf," she says, "as we humans are wont to do after a scant few decades. Daval was my grandfather. And no, I don't know of any adventuring companions in the area. Many of them are probably still alive, but I don't know how to reach them."

"I can provide you with a map," she says, "and getting onto the grounds should be easy enough. Gaining entrance to the house will be somewhat trickier."

She moves on to Evan's question, relayed through Mira. "Gracious goodnes, no. I don't have a man of affairs," she says, surprised. "I scarcely have two coppers to rub together. Grandfather had one, I am almost certain, but I do not know his name. Or hers," she adds, "for it could just as easily been a woman. If I were at Wycklea it would be a simple matter of looking up the name in Grandfathers papers, but alas, I am not at Wycklea and must do my best. As I said, I intend to find this person while you find out what's happening with the estate."

Both Arm and Uriel believe that she has been telling the truth.

She picks up an embroidered bag and sets it on the table. Reaching in, she pulls out a map case. "The map of Wycklea," she says, placing it in the center of the table. Then she pulls out seven plain leather pouches. "I can pay you each 50 gold in advance. As I said, it isn't much, but if we are successful I can give you more." Hesitating, she looks around the table. "I had heard there were seven of you."

Conner
Thursday May 13th, 2004 11:21:43 PM

"Other than wealthy estate owners, the only folk not likely to attract much attention on the middle plateau are laborers, gypsies, and tinkers, and only the first two come in groups as large as ours."

Conner thinks back to his youth and remembers the travelling sheepmen during lambing and shearing season, and the grape pickers that invaded the plateau as the summer waned.

"We could disguise ourselves and look for work on the estate" he suggests.

Arm
Friday May 14th, 2004 8:01:09 AM

Seeing that the group has no more questions, he asks Avandri, "If we should have further questions or need more assistance with something, can you tell us where we can contact you at?". Once they receive the information, he pockets one of the pouches and says to the group, "I think we should retire to our hovel and discuss the best way to approach the situation.". Turning to Avandri, he says, "It was a pleasure meeting you, my lady. We shall do our utmost to assist you, you have my word on it.".

Uriel
Friday May 14th, 2004 10:41:45 AM

Whiel Avandri is occupied with answering Kadaz and Evan's questions, Uriel fingers his symbol of Domi, looking towards Avandri. {*Detect Evil* - is she? I am just covering bases here.}

Afterwards, Uriel speaks up. "What shall be our method of contacting you if we have need?"

Kadaz
Saturday May 15th, 2004 7:05:59 AM

Gypsies? Did Conner suggest a gypsy disguise? Kadaz mentally pictures himself in gypsy garb and can't help but chuckle. :)

Mira
Sunday May 16th, 2004 3:36:21 PM

Mira takes the map, and turns it around so that the writing is right side up. The sorcerer also reaches for one of the pouches containing the coins. "We were 7, but one of our party is reclusive and mysterious." Off handedly, she adds, "you know monks..."*

The green-eyed woman will nod when Arm volunteers the party for the quest, and she will look to the others to see if they are in agreement.

When arrangements have been completed on how to contact/report to their new patron Mira will acknowledge Conner's suggestion and add, "maybe we could buy a wagon and an old horse. We could hide our weapons and such in the wagon. Evan could ride Ariel or tie her to the back of the wagon." Mira tries to hide her excitement as a plan starts to form. "We could pass ourselves off as itenerant types, looking for work as day-labourers and see if we can infiltrate the estate."

Uriel detects no evil upon Avandri.

"I am staying here at the Flying Pigs for the time being," Avandri answers. She smiles bravely. "The Outcast Quarter seems somehow fitting, although," her face sobers, "it's a trifle expensive. I am looking for less costly lodgings, and I will let you know my address if I should find anything."

"Thank you, thank you for agreeing to help me in this. And do be on your guard. Having claimed the estate, I'm afraid Sarla will stop at nothing to keep it."

On that cheerful note, your meeting breaks up.

I need a marching order and spot checks as you leave the inn.

As the group gets together and prepares to leave, Uriel says "I prefer to be near the front - I don't mind if someone else wants to be point - it made sense before that ambush last time for Kadaz to be up at the front also so that his view was not obscured. Would you like the front rank Kadaz?"

No worries for me, I shall be both watchful and safe. I shall return home as soon as I am finished...feel free to begin the discussion without me, as I'm sure someone will fill me in when I return.".

Saying so, he leaves the inn and looks about for signs of trouble (spot=17), then heads over to see Summer to fulfill his promise of telling her that the situation regarding Kethlorn has been resolved, primarily due to the information that she provided.

As they leave the inn, Connor and Arm spot a half-elf woman who seems to be very interested in the group. Idle curiosity, or something more? It's hard to say--but there are plenty of odder sights here in the Outcast Quarter to be curious about.

Seeing that you notice her, the woman fades into the crowd and disappears.

Arm heads off on some errand of his own, and the others return to the apartment (?) to prepare for the journey and discuss strategy.

Conner
Tuesday May 18th, 2004 12:15:07 AM

Although the woman disappears into the crowd before he can approach her, Conner commits the half-elf woman's image to his memory. He follows the others back to their place, where he promptly takes inventory of the items in his pack.

Each time there is a noise at the door, the fighter leaves his room to check it out in hopes that it might be the delivery person from The Catacombs.

Mira
Tuesday May 18th, 2004 12:32:14 AM

The sorcerer returns to the flat and heads straight to her room. She studies her scrolls some more. I mustn't forget to bring these, and I must remember to use them if the time is right! thinks the woman.

Later, Mira takes a scrap of plain paper and writes a note for Baldis. She asks if he can craft her a wide belt that laces up both front and back. She copies down a picture of a dragon like the tatoo on Conner's arm, and asks that the mystical beast be incorporated in the decoration.

Mira will fold up the paper, and seal it with a bit of wax from a candle on the table. She will offer a copper to a child on the street if she will deliver the note, and another when the child returns with Baldis' response.

Having already suggested a plan, Mira will remain quiet for the time being, and learn what the other's would like to do.

Arm
Tuesday May 18th, 2004 6:14:55 AM

Arm, on the way to meet Summer, stops in at Baldis' shop to inquire as to how Kethlorn is doing and also to place his order for a covering for his lute. After Baldis takes the measurements for it, he heads to the inn, hoping that Summer is still on duty...if not, he'll head back to the apartment.

Evan
Tuesday May 18th, 2004 10:02:34 AM

Evan returns to the flat with Mira. While they wait for the others to return and prepare for their journey. He also hopes someone will respond to his advertisement in the tavern. The free time gives Evan a chance to 'converse' with Mira. He explains that he can do a little carpentry work. His Uncle Saul taught him how. His Uncle Saul was also the one who taught him how to speak with his hands. Saul had some unusual friends who would come by to visit and while they talked with their mouths, they also talked with their hands. It was fun to watch.

Uriel
Tuesday May 18th, 2004 12:13:05 PM

"So, let's dicuss ideas on where to go with this investigation. There are several things we could do. Does everyone think we should stay together or should we split up? I think we could cover more ground in different groups but I don't want to weaken the group too much if someone tries to rough us up like in our last investigation."

Uriel continues,"I like the idea of having someone go into the villa to check it out. I think we could also inquire with city officials about the property or with a lawyer (if there are such things) about the procedure for filing a will or verifying the accuracy of a will."

Kadaz
Tuesday May 18th, 2004 7:25:08 PM

"One or two people have a better chance of scouting the estate than all of us together. It would make sense for us to split up and to come together later to exchange information. Two of us could go to the estate in disguise and the rest more openly remain in the city researching the problem."

DM Kathy

You return to your lodgings and do various things to get ready for your new assignment.

When Arm drops by the shop, Kethlorn is there helping Baldis. He solemnly shakes your hand and thanks you for helping him. Baldis reports that the lad seems to have made a complete recovery. He asks you to call again next week for the lute cover.

Baldis' reply to Mira also requests that she call in a week "for a final fitting."

Meanwhile, Uriel and Kadaz discuss the possibility of splitting up.

Arm  d20+7=19
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 6:03:35 AM

As Arm enters the inn, his mission to find Summer is momentarily forgotten as he is captivated by the most beautiful redhead he has ever seen. She is currently standing by the bar and, of all things, singing. For a brief instant, Arm is a bit upset that she is "cutting in on his action", but that thought flies away just as quickly as fallen leaves on a windy day as he becomes more and more captivated by her beauty with every passing second.

He manages to make his way to the front of the ever-increasing crowd and, unslinging his lute, begins to play a soft counterpoint to her song. Perhaps inspired by her beauty, he gives a very good performance (perform=19).

Despite his desire for her song to continue, it eventually ends, and after the crowd's reaction, he takes her hand in his and says, "My dearest woman, that has GOT to be THE most beautiful ballad I have ever heard. Even if it was the WORST song ever written, it would be made 100 times better by you singing it. My name is Armathen Ebano, but you may call me Arm. May I inquire as to what name the most wonderous woman in this town goes by?".

Evan
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 9:52:32 AM

Evan has Mira explain to the others that he has some skill as a carpenter. Signing with Uriel and Mira translating. I will need a set of carpenter's tools to complete the disguise. I think I would be a very good choice to be one of the inside people because I've noticed that a lot of people tend to think that because one cannot talk, they cannot think either, and are willing to talk about things in front of a mute they woudln't say in front of others.

With a rising blush in his cheeks, he continues to explain his plan. I will need someone to translate for me, though. If Mira were to pretend to be my wife... Evan gazes into Mira's eyes as he says this hoping she won't take offense to his proposal.

Mira
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 6:07:24 PM

Mira provides interpretation for Evan, explaining his plan to the group. When she gets to the part that she is to play, her eyes get shiney and two bright red spots colour her cheeks. I was thinking the very same thing she signs to the ranger, quickly breaking off the eye contact.

"I can offer myself to m'lady as a personal maid or kitchen help," Mira says to the group. "We'll need some supplies and clothes to complete the disguise!" she adds brightly, enamoured with the idea of shopping.

She starts to sign to Evan and speak at the same time, words tumbling out "I'll need a plain outfit with a skirt, and Evan'll need some tools, and stuff. Do you think Ariel will pull a small cart? Shall we go to The Catacombs? Does anyone else need anything?"

Conner
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 6:17:53 PM

Having left his father's house and chosen the life of an adventurer to avoid labouring on another's land, Conner isn't keen on working the fields. The fighter studies his companions. Some are going to find it easier to disguise themselves than others. "Arms for hire?" he asks, looking at the dwarf and the paladin. "If she is as her cousin says she is, she may have some enemies and wish protection."

Conner scratches his chin and addresses Evan, "you could build a false bottom in a cart and we could hide some of our weapons until they are needed."

To Mira he says, "check on my order, and have it delivered when yours is sent." Conner remembers that the clerk said it might take a week before his new gear was ready.

Uriel
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 7:43:17 PM

Uriel nods with Conner, "That would be a good angle to take if we weren't going to split up. Conner you are of an opinion not to split then to research in the city as well as trying to investigate the villa?"

"Now we only need Arm's opinion on this," Uriel states. "So far, I count Evan, Mira, Kadaz and I for splitting the group. And maybe Conner against?"

"With your idea Conner we could send in a separate individual to do look for work as a hired sword," Uriel suggests.

Kadaz
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 7:51:46 PM

The group continues to discuss strategy: stay in town and investigate? Go right to the estate? Or split up and try to cover both?

Most of the equipment you need to pass as common laborers: tools, peasant clothing, etc., is readily available and not very expensive.

[This is all great roleplay, guys; feel free to continue the discussion.]

Mira
Wednesday May 19th, 2004 10:30:54 PM

"I really hate to split up the group, fellas, but if we do, no one should be alone," suggests Mira gently. "How about me and Evan as a couple, and Arm as a distant relative? We can try to infiltrate the estate," she adds.

"You three," the sorcerer fixes the fighter types with a look, "can make some additional enquiries in the city, and we can arrange a rendez-vous to exchange information." Defering to the paladin, she adds, "that is if you are in agreement."

Mira gets out the map provided by their new 'employer' and studies it. "I wonder how far away the estate is, and if we will be able to return to the city each night or need to secure lodging at the manor proper," muses the woman.

Evan
Thursday May 20th, 2004 10:05:05 AM

Tapping Mira on the wrist to get her attention, Evan quickly signs to Mira, It would be better if Uriel were to be the one who travels with us. Carpenters often have a helper, so having an extra person would make sense, but it would not make sense if my helper could not communicate with me. Is there any way we could afford to get a wagon big enough for us to sleep in? That would give us excuses for slipping out of the house at odd hours. I don't think I'll have any trouble getting Ariel to pull a small wagon but if we go with a larger wagon......I wonder if we could rent a wagon and draft horses? Evan waits to hear other ideas, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. He cannot help but steal glances towards the lovely Mira.

Kadaz
Thursday May 20th, 2004 4:09:12 PM

"Mira, Your idea makes a lot of sense. Uriel, Conner and I will remain in town and research what we can. But we need to set a meeting time and place, and backups also. How long will you take to get a feel for the manor? A week? If things are going well you may want to stay longer. But if they aren't then you may need help to escape.

"I would suggest that Conner travel with you three initially. He knows more about the area then the rest of us and may be able to give you some helpful tips. Decide on a meeting place in some hidden spot near the manor. Then you (the carpenters) go on and Conner returns to us (the researchers) on a fast horse.

"After a week (or a reasonable amount of time), we meet at the meeting place one night. Or at least the carpenters slip one person out to brief the rest of us. We exchange information then and devise plans. If the carpenters do not make the established time, then we will try to meet again the following night. If the rendevous is missed that 2nd night then there is something wrong and the rest of us will try to get in.

"Likewise, if the researchers miss 2 meetings then the carpenters need to come out and find us.

"I don't think we have enough information to make detailed plans now. Hopefully after a week or so of research we'll know much more.

"Any more ideas?"

Conner
Thursday May 20th, 2004 7:40:12 PM

After translating Evan's comments, Uriel says,"While Evan makes a good point about communication, I agree that Conner would be a better choice. I am not sure I could pull off carpentry very well." Uriel laughs nervously.

"Is that OK with you, Evan?" Uriel asks,"I will try if you think this would be more believable."

The others are beginning to finalize their plans, when all of a sudden there's a commotion outside. You hear the sounds of running feet, and terrified screams. And behind it all, so low in the register it's more of a feeling than a sound, a steady whum, whum, whum.

Sunday May 23rd, 2004 7:13:57 PM

As you move outside, you see a scene of utter chaos. All around you, townsfolk are screaming and fleeing in terror. One man stumbles into a display outside a draper's shop and sends the colored bolts of cloth flying. He continues without stoping, as do those behind him, trampling the bright silks and cottons into the ground. A gnome woman falls and is barely able to avoid being trampled.

Looking around, you see smoke rising from several spots around the city. You can smell the burning from here.

Looking up, you can easily see the cause. Across the river in the Noble Quarter, near the castle of the mayor, small shapes wheel and bank in the sky. Your mind wants to make them into birds, but birds do not have four legs. Or serpentine tails.

As you start to comprehend what you are looking at, your attention is seized by something airborn headed toward you, impossibly fast. Gliding over the river is a winged reptile whose blue-tinged scales glint and glimmer in the bright sun. Its ears are large, with frilled edges, and it has a single large horn on the end of its snout. The whum, whum, whum sound is so loud now it seems to throb through your entire being, and you realize it is the sound of the creature's wings.

At last, it sinks in: you are looking at a dragon. Even as you watch, it opens its mouth and looses a crackling bolt of electricity. It doesn't seem to be aiming at anything in particular, but that doesn't seem to matter. Two shops begin to smoke and burn. There are more screams, and more people begin to run past.

The dragon is now about 500 feet away, still airborn. It does not seem to have any specific target in mind.

'I'm not ready for this' she thinks to herself, 'none of my weapons have the range or the power.'

"There is no way this is going to help. Mira, I can't believe this," Uriel states as he sheaths his sword.

Uriel looks down at the redoubtable dwarf, his lips turn up in a small smile.

"Friend dwarf, sometimes the effort must be made, regardless of the consequences for the sake of honor and what is right."

Uriel continues, "I would like to get the dragon to notice me and lead it away from this populated area towards either a dead area of the city or another open area. Any ideas?"

Mira
Monday May 24th, 2004 9:10:34 AM

Mira overhears Uriel volunteer for a suicide mission. Reaching out she plucks at the paladin's arm, "Uriel! No!" she cries. "It will only kill you and return to terrorize the city once again. Let us wait until it comes in range, about 100 ft. and then we can launch our attacks. Aim for the wings, tear the membranes that we may hinder it's flight."

Mira looks across the river at the dragons circling near the mayor's castle, "maybe we can help out over there" she says pointing in the direction of the noble quarter, "we could creep along the streets and alleys, stay under the eaves and awnings hidden from view."

"What ever we do, we've got to stay together." That said, a worried look crosses the woman's face, "has anyone seen Arm?"

Arm soon realizes that leaving via another exit is not going to make a big difference to an immense flying creature. The only real decision to make is whether to stay put and hope it passes by, or leave and hope to get clear.

The red-haired woman gives him a shaky smile. "Don't suppose you're some kind of hero," she says hopefully.

Outside the panic continues. Connor steps out to try to help the gnome, but she is already back on her feet and running. Now caught in a wave of panicking townsfolk, Connor finds himself buffeted and shoved in the general direction the crowd is moving--away from the dragon.

The great beast continues to draw closer. It opens its mouth again, this time letting out a roar that shakes the very foundations of the buildings around you. It comes closer still--to within about 200 feet--and suddenly you feel an overwhelming sense of dread and terror (Will save DC 25 to avoid being panicked).

You barely have time to register the feeling, though, before the mighty dragon wheels and heads off in another direction. You hear it roar again, farther away.

[Just to clarify--even if you fail the Will save (and you probably will), the panic only lasts as long as you are withing 200 feet of the dragon, and since it almost immediately turned away again, you don't have to describe any lasting running and gibbering. Unless, of course, you want to. :) Arm only needs to make the save if he decides to go outside.]

He takes her hand and, seeing no obvious exit to the rear anyway, decides to chance exiting the main door. Upon doing so, the wyrm is VERY much closer, and Arm feels every fiber of his being convulse as it never has before. Evan is able to stand his ground and watch the dragon as it heads toward the Guild Quarter (yes, a natural 20 is an automatic success).

His companions are not so lucky, reacting in fear and panic as the dragon's aura washes over them.

Connor is swept up by a stampeding crowd, but manages to fight his way out of it.

The red-haired woman pulls her hand free of Arm's and darts back inside Sampson's.

The dragon is definitely moving away now, taking its aura of fear with it. There's no way to tell whether it will come back, though--and you can still see the other dragons wreaking havoc on various other parts of Plateau City. Around you, crowds of people still scream and run about, nearly blinded with panic. Greyish-black smoke begins to drift through the air, and the smell of buring hangs over you like a pall.

Mira
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 9:13:04 PM

Unsteady, Mira tries to stand up. Her face is white, but her voice is strong, "Yes, Kadaz, we should not abandon the city." Mira looks in the direction in which the dragon has flown, and adds "maybe we can be of some assitance to those who are co-ordinating a counter attack," then adds more quietly, "or a rescue mission."

She recovers her crossbow from where she let it fall.

Evan
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 9:33:46 PM

The ranger gestures wildly after the disappearing dragon. His bright green eyes wild with excitement. Shoving his weapons back into place, he signs rapidly to Uriel and Mira...we must persue it...learn what it is here to do...stop it if we can.

Evan bounces lightly on his feet ready for persuit.

Conner  d20+3=11
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 10:40:05 PM

Conner makes his way back to Sampson's and the rest of the party. Along the way he keeps a wary eye for more dragon attacks [Spot=11] and tries to determine where specifically the smoke is coming from.

"I have never one before...well at least not in real life...just my friend here..." the fighter flexes his bicep and the tattoo of a red dragon belches forth a small jet of flame.

Kadaz
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 10:53:08 PM

Kadaz moves away from the building and hangs his head in shame. He moves back to where he had stood, picks up his cross bow, and ties it to his pack. "The guard will be mobilizing. I understand that we may not be of much help, but we must do what we can. I say we start fighting fires."

Kadaz pauses a moment and scans the sky. "Why are there so many dragons? I wonder if Maline at the Society for Draconic Research might know. Or if somehow they're involved."

Kadaz tries to remember if there's every been an attack by this many dragons before. And why aren't there more counterattacks from the city?

But for now, it's time prevent more damage to Plateau City. Kadaz starts moving towards the nearest smoke plume.

Uriel
Tuesday May 25th, 2004 11:03:40 PM

After the dragon moves on, Uriel kneels down and retrieves his arrow and bow.

His face is pale and drawn but his jaw is resolute. He says to the others, "there is no way for me to stand against that dragon or any others...not now. What I can do is help organized these people into a fire brigade and help prevent hysteria from causing any more deaths. Would you like to help me?" He asks the others.

In any event, Uriel will start to shout out to the people in the streets, "The dragons have passed. They are gone. You must find it within yourselves to calm your fears. We need to organize everyone to help one another. To fight the fires, to help reunite children with their parents."

Uriel continues to shout out variations on this message and gather those about him who want to help. By going into the inns and stables to retrieve buckets and manure (to smother the fire). To take the buckets to the nearby wells.

Arm
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 10:22:15 AM

The woman momentarily forgotten, Arm regains his feet and spies Conner then the others in the milling crowds. Making his way over to them, he says, "I thank the gods that you are all well.". Turning to Kadaz, he asks, "Since you are from this city, I must ask....does this happen often? If not, I fear we must put our most recent mission on hold for the moment until we can figure out what is going on and how we can stop it before it happens again. Far more is a stake from this threat, and we must think of the greater good, here...even if it means losing our current assignment.".

DM Kathy
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 7:54:10 PM

The party recovers from their shock and begins to look about for ways to respond--that don't involve the suicidal step of actually taking on the dragons.

Kadaz and Uriel begin helping put out the nearest fire--a feed store that proves to be quite a challenge.

Uriels words seem to restore some order; many people seem glad just to have somebody tell them what to do. A bucket brigade is soon established.

[Brent, I'm a city girl, but isn't throwning methane-laden manure on a fire a really bad idea?]

Sounds of general mayhem and chaos continue from other parts of the city, but so far, it loos as if no dragons are coming back in this direction.

Conner  d20+3=16 d20+2=21
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 8:07:06 PM

Conner pitches in with Kadaz and Uriel to help put out the feed store. He inserts himself into the line of the bucket brigade and starts hurling water onto the fire.

If Conner spots or hears anyone trapped by the blaze [Spot=16; Listen=21] he will react immediately. He will douse himself with a bucket of water and holding a wet cloth over his nose and mouth, enter the burning building.

Uriel  d20+3=18
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 8:24:26 PM

Uriel continues restoring order and working to put out the feed store fire.

As the people work, Uriel's color returns and his voice gathers strength from the success of the efforts of the towns folk.{Diplomacy:18}

{OOC: I guess I could roll a diplomacy roll for my yelling. Also, Kathy manure is not methane laden (Methane gas disperses quickly upon exit from the ...methane ejector :0 and is a byproduct of the digestion process. Manure especially after it is wet, can be used to smother flames by preventing oxygen from fueling the fire - the same way sand does...)}

Evan  d20+4=18
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 9:50:30 PM

At first Evan looks angry, then a look of acceptance, and resolve when he realizes that they will not be persuing the big blue.

His disappointment is soon forgotten as he quickly finds work putting out the feed store fire. If there are any wounded the ranger will tend to them. (Heal=18)

Mira  d20+5=17 d20+4=7
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 9:57:05 PM

Mira will offer words of encouragement (Diplomacy=17) to those combating the feed store fire. She will mingle with the crowd and try to learn what she can about the dragon attack (Gather Information=7) but she is too frightened to stray far from her party, and everyone seems pretty upset, anyway.

If she finds an opportunity to talk to Uriel quietly, she will suggest that maybe the party should check in at the Flying Pigs Inn to see if their new patroness, Avandri, survived the attack and still requires their services.

Kadaz
Wednesday May 26th, 2004 11:35:18 PM

Kadaz throws himself wholeheartedly into fighting the fire at the feed store. It feels good to be doing something constructive in this situation.

Arm  d20+2=11
Thursday May 27th, 2004 7:21:48 AM

Arm joins in the efforts to put out the fire at the feed store as well, helping out wherever needed, while at the same time either looking for trapped people OR the return of the dragons (spot=11).

OOC: Brent is right Kathy...the danger that you're talking about is only present when the manure is stored in a sealed area where the gas is allowed to accumulate...water DOES accelerate the production of the gas from the manure (no matter HOW old it is), but as long as the area is reasonably ventilated and the manure isn't used in HIGH quantities...the danger of explosion is VERY minimal, and as Brent said, the fire will be smothered by the manure anyway, so I'd say there's less than a .1% chance of an explosion.

P.S. I'M a city boy too...that's just one of NUMEROUS useless facts I have stored away... :-)

DM Kathy
Thursday May 27th, 2004 7:22:19 PM

Evan finds numerous people with miscellaneous bruises, cuts, and burns, which he is able to set right; he also manages to splint a broken arm.

Mira and Uriel are successful in calming people down, helped out by the fact that the dragons seem to be elsewhere, and by the example the group is setting by fighting the fire. Soon, others pitch in.

The feed store proves to be beyond saving, and once you realize this, you begin to work on keeping the buildings nearby from catching alight.

Conner spots nobody trapped in the store, but he does spot some poeple lingering uncertainly inside the neighboring buildings. Perhaps they ought to be evacuated.

Arm keeps a weather eye out for dragons, but does not spot any returning.

Conner
Thursday May 27th, 2004 8:54:14 PM

"Hey You! Yes, you in the building there!" Conner yells up to the figures huddled by windows in the neighbouring building. You had best get out of there in case the fire spreads. Come down here and help with the bucket brigade.

Conner watches to see if any respond.

Arm
Friday May 28th, 2004 12:25:47 PM

Arm pitches in to make sure that the buildings surrounding the feed store do not catch fire as well.

Uriel
Friday May 28th, 2004 12:40:21 PM

Uriel continues the work of trying to save the area from fire. He looks to Arm and says,"Could you play some inspirational music to calm the people down and keep their minds from the deaths of their friends?"

Uriel watches to see if the folks that Conner is yelling at follow his directions. He will be ready to lend Conner a hand if it comes to that.

Kadaz
Friday May 28th, 2004 2:55:22 PM

Kadaz works like a fiend, yelling at everyone to hurry up and not let the fire spread. Occasionally he glances at the sky but he doesn't allow this to interfere with his concerns on the ground.

Evan
Sunday May 30th, 2004 10:03:40 PM

Evan continues to provide first aid to those in need.

Mira  d20=10
Sunday May 30th, 2004 10:06:57 PM

Mira works with Evan to tend the injured. She checks the sky periodically for signs of dragons.[Spot=10]

DM Kathy
Monday May 31st, 2004 9:28:59 PM

Conner shouts up at the building for the people to leave, but they do not. It's difficult to see clearly, but they seem to be too frightened.

Uriel stands by Conner, ready to help if needed.

Arm and Kadaz continue to work on protecting the adjoining buildings, which proves more successful than trying to put out the fire. It begins to look as though if you keep at it, you'll be able to save everything but the feed store.

Mira and Evan tend the injured. Seeing this, people begin seeking them out, carrying or assisting the wounded. Thus far, they are orderly, but the sheer numbers threaten to overwhelm the two well-meaning adventurers.

Conner  d20-2=3
Monday May 31st, 2004 11:41:56 PM

Conner shakes his head and mutters something about 'mice' beneath his breath. He enters the adjoining building to try and persuade [diplomacy=3] the residents to come out on to the street until the danger has passed.

Evan
Monday May 31st, 2004 11:45:27 PM

Evan continues to minister to the wounded. He feels somewhat overwhelmed by the volume of people in need. Sweat pouring from his forehead, he continues his work. He signs to Mira, hoping she will act as his interpreter.

Mira
Monday May 31st, 2004 11:48:39 PM

The sorcerer follows the ranger as he does his work. She lends support where she can and offers words of comfort to the wounded. When there is a moment of respite, Mira seeks out the paladin, Uriel, and asks for his help with the injured.

Uriel
Tuesday June 1st, 2004 12:25:21 AM

Uriel will ask amongst the crowd of people helping if they know any of the people huddled next to the buildings. If so then he will see if the people could be coaxed out with familiar faces.

When Mira comes looking for Uriel because of the healing, he shakes his head. "Of course. There is too much to do and not enough of those to do it. Arm can you keep at this while I help Mira and Evan?"

Uriel will also try to help those injured. He can Lay On Hands for a total of 4 hit points - splitting it into a couple of the most critical patients. Also, if anyone seems to be in a life threatening condition, he will use the wand on them.

Kadaz
Tuesday June 1st, 2004 6:28:47 AM

Kadaz looks at the progress so far. Losing the feed store is not good. But he feels better about saving the neighboring homes. He redoubles his efforts to stop this fire.

Arm
Tuesday June 1st, 2004 8:12:18 AM

Arm unslings his lute to begin playing, but then realizes that more work needs to be done to save the adjoining buildings...while feeling sorry for the people in distress, he feels that it's best to save the other buildings BEFORE more are lost.

DM Kathy
Tuesday June 1st, 2004 8:16:44 PM

Conner enters the home, and finds a young boy of perhaps eleven, clinging tightly to two younger children, who cling just as tightly to him. In the background, a baby wails.

"Ma said we was to stay right here till she got back," the boy says, an edge of hysteria to his voice. "We're not to go out or we'll get in trouble. Have you seen my Ma?"

Uriel, meanwhile, asks around for anyone who knows the family, and finds a middle-aged woman who seems willing to try to talk to them. She goes into the house.

The wounded that you are seeing are not seriously hurt, and mostly need bandages and reassurance. You are (barely) able to keep up with the influx.

The efforts to save the nearby buildings seem to be paying off, but until the feed store fire has burned itself out, you'll need to keep at it. Anybody doing this, please make a Constitution check (DC 8).

Evan  d20+4=12 d20+4=7
Tuesday June 1st, 2004 9:18:45 PM

Conner offers to help carry the children down in his arms.

Mira  d20+5=24
Tuesday June 1st, 2004 10:49:18 PM

If Conner exits the building with the children, Mira will rush over to help him. If he will let her, she will take the baby in one arm, and reach out a hand to clasp the hand of one of the other children. She will speak quiet words of encouragement in an attempt to keep the children calm. (Diplomacy=24)

Kadaz  d20+3=17
Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 6:49:02 AM

Kadaz eyes the fire warily. As a city kid he heard stories of fire sweeping through blocks of homes. He keeps working at containing the fire to only the feed store. (con check 17)

DM Kathy  d20+2=18
Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 8:24:42 PM

"We're supposed to stay here," the boy insists frantically, clutching his younger brother and sister. Conner's reasoning does not seem to have had any effect.

"Body, dear," a woman's voice calls. Uriel's volunteer enters the house. "Body, it's Tuella from next door. Why don't you bring the little ones outside? All this smoke isn't healthy for them. Then we'll find your mother and explain."

That seems to do the trick; the boy allows the younger ones to be led away, then picks up the baby and follows. Outside, Mira is on hand to help, and the children are looked after and kept safe.

Evan continues with the first aid. He also tries his hand at fighting the fires, but before too long exhaustion claims him and he needs to take a breather.

Uriel, Arm, and Kadaz continue to work until the fire burns itself out about an hour later.

It is the middle of the afternoon. A pall of smoke hangs over the city, and a steady stream of wounded is filing toward the temples for healing. On your street, the feed store still smolders, but any danger of it catching other buildings alight has passed. Merchants with soot-grimed faces step up to shake your hands and thank you for saving their homes and businesses.

The childrens' mother has not yet come to claim them, but "Tualla from next door" has offered to take charge of them until she gets back. Her eyes echo the unspoken worry that perhaps the mother won't come back at all; there were casualties today.

For now, however, it appears you have done all you could. You are sooty and sweaty and exhausted, and the smell of smoke clings to your nose and nags the back of your throat.

Conner  d20+5=9
Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 9:15:47 PM

Conner does not let the boy's mistrust of him dampen his spirits. "You're a bright lad, Body" he says to the boy once they are outside. "I'll look in on you later if that's alright."

Conner leaves the children and goes back to what is left of the feed store. Seeing that all is well under control the fighter begins to make his way back to Sampson's. He looks about for Amy to see that she is safe and then purchases a keg of ale. Conner slings the keg onto his shoulder and grabs a fistful of mugs on the way back out.

"Thirsty work!" he calls out to the party, a row of pearly white teeth flashes out from his soot blackened face. The keg is already tapped and in no-time a row of full mugs is ready for the parched fire fighters.

Kadaz
Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 9:46:27 PM

Kadaz accepts the thanks of the merchants gratefully.

He then speaks to the others. "There's nothing more here to be done. Let's return home and see how it fared during this disaster. Then we must plan how to accomplish our next mission."

Mira
Wednesday June 2nd, 2004 10:06:45 PM

Mira accepts a mug of beer from Conner, and closes her eyes in a small moment of bliss, as the cool amber liquid washes away the aching dryness of her throat.

The woman answers Kadaz, "Once we get cleaned up, maybe we should call on Avandri at the Flying Pigs Inn. You know, to see if she survived the attack and still requires our services."

Uriel - Bone Weary
Thursday June 3rd, 2004 2:17:44 AM

Because he is blackened by the soot and reeking of the dirty work that went on this day, Uriel has an amused look on his face when the merchants and shopkeepers thank him.

As Uriel nods in agreement with the others about checking into the welfare of their apartment and on checking Avandri, his jaw begins to clench a few times.

He says, "I will be along to the Inn shortly. I have one thing to attend to."

After the others have headed back towards the apartment, Uriel goes next door to the house with the children. "Tualla is it?" he asks of the neighbor watching the children.

In a low voice to Tualla, Uriel says, "Here is something to help watch over these children while their mother is missing. May Domi bring her home safe to the children. If the news turns badly for the family or if you need more to watch after them until the mother returns... or...well just in case, you can contact me here." Uriel gives her directions to the group's apartment, hoping it is indeed still there! {Uriel gives her 15 GPs}

After making sure she is ok with the children and stressing that she can come to Uriel or the others if they need help, Uriel hurries back to the apartment, hoping for refreshment and a good solid dunking in a bucket of water to freshen up.

Arm
Thursday June 3rd, 2004 5:50:01 AM

Arm wipes an arm (hehehehe) across his eyes, leaving him with somewhat of a "reverse raccoon" appearance. He accepts the thanks of the merchants, as well as the proferred mug of ale, the latter with much gusto. After a few moments of relaxation he asks Kadaz directions to the bath house that he recently used, and making the party known of his intentions, heads wearily off in that direction, hoping that building is still intact. After he bathes, he will return to the apartment, assuming that THAT still stands as well.

Evan
Thursday June 3rd, 2004 9:22:18 AM

Evan lies sleeping on the rug in front of the fireplace, exhaustion overtaking him.

DM Kathy
Thursday June 3rd, 2004 9:07:06 PM

Tualla assures Uriel that she and the children will be fine until the mother returns. "They can play with my own little ones," she says. She tries to refuse the money, but reluctantly accepts if Uriel presses it on her.

Luckily, the bathhouse, Sampson's, and your apartment are all still standing. Sampson's is doing a brisk business with people trying to clear away the smoke or steady their shaking nerves.

The apartment, when you reach it, does smell faintly of smoke, as does most of the neighborhood. Opening the windows does not help--in fact, it makes things a little worse.

You begin to recover somewhat and discuss strategy. The first step is probably to figure out whether your client is still alive--do you go this afternoon, or wait until tomorrow when things have calmed down a bit?

Mira
Thursday June 3rd, 2004 9:39:33 PM

The sorcerer crouches over the exhausted ranger, and her eyes shine with unshed tears. Exhausted, she bows her head, and the tears course down her cheeks.

She places a hand gently on Evan's roughly cut blond hair, now grimmy with sweat and soot, while the other clasps her silver and jade pendant in the shape of a dragon. Her shoulders shake and the tears keep coming.

Uriel
Friday June 4th, 2004 2:13:48 AM

Seeing the crowds at the bath house, Uriel opts for the more expedient head-in-the-trough method of removing soot and grime (crude but effective).

Afterwards he enters the apartment and sees Mira crying and Evan on the floor. He is unable to hide his alarm at Mira's tears. Uriel says, "Is Evan harmed? What happened?" He grabs at the healing wand and moves towards him. When he realizes it is just exhaustion, he looks embarassed by his reaction.

"Er, uhm, yeah, right. Well ok I am going to lie down now. I guess we could go check on the client tomorrow," Uriel articulates in a brilliant display of his oratory abilities.

He moves to one of the bedrooms, removing armor and equipment. He strips off the smoke stained tunic and linens. The last thing he does before he jumps into the bed is lean his sheathed longsword on the wall next to the head of the bed, within easy reach.

Arm
Friday June 4th, 2004 5:46:07 AM

After returning from the bath house, Arm, seeing that Uriel has already retired for the day, suggests to the rest that it's best THEY get some rest as well, then heads to his room, where he immediately falls asleep.

Evan
Friday June 4th, 2004 8:28:28 AM

Into the depths of Evan's exhaustion, a soft touch reaches to awaken him. His eyes blink open to gaze up into Mira's lovely green eyes. He seems surprised and confused by the tears he sees there and his arms come up to pull Mira down next to him. He holds her close, kissing away her tears, until sleep once again takes him away.

Mira
Friday June 4th, 2004 7:06:09 PM

The sorcerer yields, and is pulled down beside the ranger. Tears of sadness and fatigue give way to the deep sleep of the truly exhausted.

At sunrise, Mira rises, packs a few personal items in her pack, and heads for the baths. She returns shortly afterwards, hair tightly braided in it's customary severe plait, and skin slightly red from the thorough scrubbing required to remove the dirt and soot from the previous day's labours. There are dark circles under her eyes.

Back at the apartment, she makes a small fire, and puts a kettle on to boil.

Kadaz
Friday June 4th, 2004 9:08:23 PM

Once the group returns home Kadaz tiredly pulls his gear off and dumps it at the end of his bed. He slumps into a chair and stairs at the wall absentmindely for 5 minutes, thinking about fires and dragons.

Rousing himself he goes to the neighborhood hand pump and draws a bucket of water. He pulls out a doggie treat, feeds it to Birdie, and then, before the dog can react, starts washing the grit and smoke out of his fur.

Once the dog is clean, Kadaz takes his turn in the local bath house. After he is clean, Kadaz carefully beats out his clothes, hangs them up, and then collapses into bed. His dreams are restless and his tossing and turning prevents Birdie from getting comfortable on the foot of the bed.

Conner
Saturday June 5th, 2004 9:42:48 PM

Conner returns the now empty keg to Sampson along with mugs. His thirst quenched, the fighter heads to the baths and cleans himself up. He takes the oportunity to scrub the soot and grime from his clothes and equipment before returning to the apartment for a much needed rest.

DM Kathy
Sunday June 6th, 2004 9:42:31 PM

By the following morning, everyone is feeling more or less normal. You are able to scrub away most of the dirt and grime, and everyone's throat feels a little bit better. Outdoors, the city still smells faintly of smoke and ash, but there is no visible smoke in the air.

When Conner returns the keg, he learns the sad news that Summer was killed during the attack.

But not all the news is bad. Tualla stops by early in the morning to return Uriel's gold and report that the childrens' mother returned safe and sound.

Uriel
Sunday June 6th, 2004 11:16:30 PM

Uriel wakes up ravenous. He goes to Sampson's and eats his fill.

When he goes back to the apartment and hears of Summer and then Tualla, he goes into his room to pray before doing his morning weapons practice.

Afterwards, once everyone is reassembled, Uriel says,"We should go check on our employer today. I hope she fared well in the attack."

Conner
Monday June 7th, 2004 7:45:45 AM

When Conner wakes the following morning he waits for an opportune moment to approach Arm..."Alas my friend, I bring sad news. The lass you have been seeing, Summer, was killed in yesterdays attacks. The bartender at Sampson's was kind enough to let me know...If there is anything I can do..."

The fighter's voice trails away as he runs out of words.

Evan
Monday June 7th, 2004 9:13:45 AM

Evan arises the next morning very early, and heads out to check on Ariel. With Shakka gone temporarily, Evan is considering bringing Ariel back to the flat. That is, if Ariel survived the attack on the city.

Arm  d20=11
Monday June 7th, 2004 2:45:00 PM

Arm, upon wakening, receives the news from Conner. He does his best to maintain a stoic face (will=11...need help on the DC for this, Kathy ;-) ), then tells Conner "Thank you, my friend. I will keep you in mind if I need to talk.". Saying so, he takes his lute, and with a terse explanation that he'll be back soon, searches out not crowds to perform for, but the solitude that only an orphan knows. Finding a secluded area, he begins idly strumming a sonorous tune, not even paying attention to the notes, simply thinking about the halfling that not only appealed to him, but was so instrumental in the resolution of their last adventure. She was kindness in every sense of the word, both in thought and deed. "So much death have I seen, yet this one....why?". Still deep into his own thoughts, he heads back to the apartment, taking some solace in the fact that at least he was able to make her aware of the fact that it was through her intervention that Baldis' family was made whole again. Reaching the apartment, he looks skyward, not for dragons or their kin but far beyond where they could ever fly, smiles briefly, and enters to join the rest of the party.

Mira
Monday June 7th, 2004 7:00:35 PM

The sorcerer prepares tea, and a meagre breakfast with whatever is available. She sets out the food, family style, on the big table.

When the group is assembled, she says "we shall call at the Flying Pigs then?"

Kadaz
Monday June 7th, 2004 9:07:01 PM

Summer dead, poor thing. Kadaz reflects on the news solemnly. "I'm sorry" he says to Arm sympathetically. "She didn't deserve it. That's one more thing the dragons have to answer for."

While Arm is distracted Kadaz will take an hour or so to walk to the Society for Draconic Research. He glances inside to see if Maline is around. If so, he will politely ask her if she knows why the dragons attacked.

Once the party has regrouped Kadaz agrees with Mira. "Let us find out if our commission still exists. If so, then we have a great deal of planning to do. Some of us were staying in the city to investigate Avandri's story. I suspect the commotion caused by the dragon attack will make this research more difficult. So the sooner we start the better."

DM Kathy
Monday June 7th, 2004 9:50:58 PM

Those who breakfast at Sampson's note that the mood is somewhat somber, and that an undercurrent of fear has crept over the city. If dragons can attack at any time without warning, who can truly claim to be safe?

But other business awaits. Arm needs some time to himself, and goes off to claim some.

Kadaz pays a visit to the Society for Draconic Research, and finds the place a-buzz with activity. It seems he is not the only one interested in learning more about what might have happened.

"We still don't know," a young-looking elf man is telling a small knot of people. "We have people looking into it, but right now we're just as mystified as everyone else."

Besides the elf man, and a crowd of worried-looking townsfolk, Kadaz sees a small figure, well-wrapped up, sitting near the hearth. It is a halfling or gnome, stooped with age, one wizened hand clutching a cane, head drooping as if asleep.

Maline is nowhere to be found, and when Kadaz finds a moment to ask the elf about her, he replies, "She's at the Castle, trying to figure out what in Domi's name happened yesterday."

Eventually, you all meet back in your lodgings and head to the Outcast Quarter to enquire after your (hopefully still living) patron at the Flying Pigs. You reach the inn without incident, and discover that Avandri is still alive and still eager for your help. "Life at Wycklea seems better than ever," she says with a sad little smile. "I fear the city may not be safe."

Once everyone is reassembled and the group goes back to the Flying Pigs, Uriel shakes his head at her comments, "The city is most definitely not safe, but you should hold no illusions about the safety on one of the other plateaus - as long as the dragons are adversaries, we are none of us safe."

With that ominous comment, Uriel sits back and calls for an ale, nursing it through the others conversation but saying nothing else.

Conner
Tuesday June 8th, 2004 12:43:16 AM

Conner listens to the others make plans, but he is a little distracted as he muses on whether the recent dragon activity has caused delays in deliveries from the Catacombs. The fighter hopes his new black coloured armour arrives before there are any more attacks.

Mira
Tuesday June 8th, 2004 12:55:06 AM

Mira has brought the map that Avendri provided when first they accepted the quest. "How far away do you think the manor is?" she asks, showing the map to the others. Do you think we can get there in a day, by foot?

Mira attempts to recap the party's plan, "so the three of us," the green-eyed woman signals the bard, the ranger, and herself, before continuing, "will try to pass ourselves off as looking for work at the manor. Evan as carpenter, myself as maid, and Arm as a minstrel? While you three," the sorcerer signals the two fighters and the paladin, "will make enquiries here in Plateau City?"

Mira will try to discern if there is agreement in the party before taking any further action.

Arm
Tuesday June 8th, 2004 6:12:44 AM

Arm, still preoccupied with the loss of Summer, nods wearily at Mira and says, "Aye, I shall accompany you.".

Kadaz
Tuesday June 8th, 2004 9:19:53 PM

"Mira, yes, let's start our investigation. But we need to set a time and place to meet up with those who go into the manor. We must be prepared in case they meet up with trouble."

DM Kathy
Tuesday June 8th, 2004 10:10:35 PM

[Backtracking a little, your Catacombs items arrived this morning, with profuse apologies for the delay. "I was on my way yesterday," says the deliverywoman, "when the draogns attacked and....well, none of my afternoon deliveries got made."]

The group decides to follow its original strategy, with Mira, Evan, and Arm investigating the estate and the others remaining in town.

"On foot it takes more than a day to reach Wycklea," Avandri tells you. "But at least the public roads are safe. Private roads are another matter - and the last five miles or so to Wycklea are on a private road."

Conner  d20=19
Tuesday June 8th, 2004 11:14:42 PM

Conner looks at the map held by Mira and tries to remember some landmark that is at the midway point between the city and the estate. (Knowledge=19) If he can think of one, he will mention it as a good place to rendez-vous for the exchange of information.

Once back at the apartment, he will tear open the package from the catacombs and admire the new armour. He lovingly traces the clever design work on the dull-black breastplate, helmet, and greaves. After fastening the equipment upon himself, he holds up an old metal plate in a vain attempt to judge his reflection. His white teeth flash as Conner is unable to contain his enthusiasm.

Mira
Tuesday June 8th, 2004 11:22:41 PM

"Okay. Does anyone need anything at the Catacombs?" enquires the sorcerer. "I was there earlier asking about plain peasants clothes, carpenters supplies, and a wagon or cart."

Mira signs to Evan but speaks as well, "a cart was suggested as appropriate for a horse like your Ariel, but a wagon would reguire two large horses or oxen. I think a cart would do. We can seek board in the servants quarters of the estate." Mira gets a crafty look on her pale face, and the light glances off her spectacles, "it might be easier to find things out if we infiltrate the place."

Arm
Wednesday June 9th, 2004 6:08:46 AM

Arm looks at Mira and Evan, and says, "I think it would be best if only one of us meets with the rest to update them, as one person missing would be MUCH less noticeable than 3. Since I am going to be a minstrel, it is well within my nature to wander about, with my presence not being expected for ANY length of time in any one place, I will gladly take up the role...as long as the two of you agree, that is...". He continues to the two, "Another point to consider...should we show up on their doorstep all at once as a group? That alone could arouse suspicion...if the two of you want to arrive together, that is fine, but I think I shall wait in the woods for a few hours afterward before I present myself. I think it best we start out as early as possible tomorrow morning to allow this to happen."

Turning to the rest of the group, he continues, "Finally, we need to set up a time to meet....since tomorrow will be a travel day, let us say that I meet with one or more of you at the edge of the property 3 days hence around midnight. What say you all?".

Uriel
Wednesday June 9th, 2004 6:27:08 PM

Uriel says,"That is a good idea, Arm. I am a bit concerned with how far apart we are. I mean if either group were to run into trouble we are not as strong divided. It is just a thought brought on by the recent attack of the Dragons and by our last mission."

"If no one else has any objections to the plan, I will go along with it I am just not sure of the wisdom of splitting the group. Maybe we could just try to get an appointment with Avandri's sister?" Uriel suggests.

Evan
Wednesday June 9th, 2004 8:00:06 PM

Evan cannot help but blush when Mira when Mira suggests that they stay in the servant's quarters. He wonders if she realizes that it will be much harder to keep up the charade of their marriage if they remain in close quarters with the rest of the servants. Evan signs to Mira, "Have you gotten what we need already or should we go now to the Catacombs to get what we need?" Evan would like to purchase his tools himself as it is important to get the right tools.

Evan signs that he agrees with Arm that they should leave as soon as possible.

Kadaz
Wednesday June 9th, 2004 8:04:30 PM

"No plan is every risk free. But given what we have to accomplish I think what we're planning to do is reasonable. And those of us staying here will meet you in 3 days time. I'd like to make a map, if possible, so that we don't get lost on the way there."

Mira
Wednesday June 9th, 2004 9:27:58 PM

Mira looks Uriel in the eyes. "It is dangerous as Kadaz says, but I see no other way. Besides, Arm will meet you all at the rendez-vous point at the appointed time to update you on our progress." Mira nods in the bard's direction, approving his plan.

To Evan she signs, I did not complete the purchases. I was unsure of the tools you required. No transaction has been made.

"Evan and I are planing a trip to the Catacombs. Does anyone need anything?" she asks.

DM Kathy
Wednesday June 9th, 2004 9:28:21 PM

You debate the wisdom of splitting the party, but it does seem to be the fastest way to get things done.

Cart, harness, tools, peasant clothing, etc., are all easy enough to obtain in the town markets, and you don't need to venture into the Catacombs for them--unless you want Barnum's Levitating Cart of Fabulousness or some such.

Connor seems to remember an inn somewhere near Wycklea. He doesn't remember exactly where it was, but it was called the Coachman Inn and was a popular stop with travelers. Perhaps it would be a good place for a meeting. If it's still there.

Uriel
Wednesday June 9th, 2004 9:42:46 PM

Uriel maintains eye contact with Mira, not in a hostile way but with an earnestness, "Mira, there are alternatives. We could try and meet with the official that gave the o.k. on the will. We could all try to make an appointment at the estate." Uriel breaks eye contact, shrugging as he turns away.

"It is decided that we will split the group for the sake of ... expediency," Uriel continues, "Safe travel - we will meet in three days with Arm."

"I do think that maybe on the way out, this Coachman's Inn could be inquired as to if they have a runner or someone else who makes daily trips into town. Also, if you need us more quickly, then you could send word and we might get to the estate quicker. I also suggest the three of us staying look into renting a mount and being able to get to them and off towards the estate in a hurry," Uriel says.

Conner
Wednesday June 9th, 2004 10:47:00 PM

Conner looks up from making some final adjusments to his armour. "Look for a place called the 'Coachman' . It should make a good meeting place. It's not far from Wycklea."

The fighter nods in agreement with Uriel, "I too am concerned about dividing our forces, but I will defer to the group and see what I can learn here in the city."

Arm
Thursday June 10th, 2004 1:56:21 PM

Arm agrees that splitting up is not necessarily the safest of plans, but reiterates the need for inocuousness..."Having too many people show up at the same time looking for work would without a doubt raise suspicions. Safe or not, this is all we have.". Turning to Mira, he says, "Nay, my dear, I require nothing...I am already quite equipped for my role.", the final part he adds with a wry grin.

Kadaz
Thursday June 10th, 2004 4:30:59 PM

Kadaz can think of no words of advice for those traveling to the estate. What does he know of estates or farms or whatever it is they have outside of the city walls? "Be careful" is all he can add.

Mira
Thursday June 10th, 2004 5:36:02 PM

Mira shoulders her pack, distributing the weight evenly across her back. The scroll case, goes over her shoulder. With light crossbow and shortspear, the woman is ready to head out.

"In three days then" she says, "Arm will meet at least one of you at the Coachman."

To Evan and Arm, Mira says, "I'd like to make a quick stop to pick up some clothes and a few supplies."

(OOC: Kathy, would like peasants clothes and possibly a cart for Evan's horse, Ariel, also tools of the trade for a carpenter. Query: Is there such a thing as carrier pigeons in the Wold?)

DM Kathy
Thursday June 10th, 2004 9:37:35 PM

Evan and Mira make their purchases and prepare to journey to the estate. [I have no idea whether there are officially carrier pigeons in the Wold. I will allow you to have an unofficial one. :)]

Then Evan, Mira, and Arm depart for the Second Plateau. The journey is uneventful, although it makes for a rather long day. Asking around, you are able to locate the Coachman Inn, roughly where Conner though it was. It is still open for business, and still sees a brisk trade in travelers passing through. You decide it is as good a place as any to spend the night and make your final plans.

Meanwhile, Uriel, Kadaz, and Conner remain in Plateau City and make their inquiries.

[Tell me what your asking, and roughly whom you're asking it of, and make some Gather Information and/or Diplomacy rolls. Or rather, tell Brent. :) This is my last DM post before going to Disneyland! Everybody be nice to Brent while I'm gone, and don't try to convince him I always let you have class outside. :) See you in a week.]

Thursday June 10th, 2004 11:02:03 PM

Conner prepares for a day of sleuthing about the city, a job he is generally ill-suited for. He takes breakfast at Sampson's followed by a short detour to visit Baldis. There he asks the artisan to make him a quiver out of black leather and to emboss it with the same pattern as the tattoo on his right temple.

The fighter then moves on to the library and the office of the land registery for new Elenna. He will inquire at both places about Wycklea and look for records of ownership as well as anything of historical significance that might have been recorded. He will specifically look for mention of Daval, Sarla and Avanti and their family name [Gather information=5].

Following his research, Conner makes his way back towards the Flying Pig. He keeps his eyes open for any sign of the woman that had taken interest in them during their last visit [Spot=4].

Uriel will aid Conner in his search, not wanting to split the group any further.
At the library, Uriel looks for the records of ownership as well (Gather Information=18).

At the land registry, he goes for the woo the clerk method, if there is a clerk handy :)
(Diplomacy:13)

Uriel will keep his eyes peeled for any sign of suspicious individuals following as well. (Spot:20)

Arm
Friday June 11th, 2004 8:11:49 AM

Upon reaching the Coachman, unless Mira or Evan plan on discussing strategy for the next day(s), retires to his room, where he attempts to compose and rehearse some new songs for the days ahead.

ADM Brent Post
Friday June 11th, 2004 7:02:06 PM

If you guys want to post through the weekend I am willing to post also. Since we are in two groups I can post whenever I get a post from everyone in that group.

Evan
Saturday June 12th, 2004 9:34:17 AM

After acquiring the cart, Evan does a little work to it so that it has a false bottom, accessable from underneath, to put the weapons and armor in. He also takes a bit of personal time, returning a few hours later. He had spent a bit of time at the market, seeking out a pair of matching rings that were cheap enough for him to afford. When he returns to the flat, he pulls Mira off to the side and offers the smaller of the two rings to her, hoping that it will fit. He signs to her, blushing furiously as he does so. If we are supposed to be married, we should wear rings. Someone might get suspicious if we are not wearing rings.

OOC
Hi everyone!

Everthing is finally cleared up at home. My wife is healthy and well, and things have finally slowed down a bit at work.

With this in mind, I am Gung-Ho to get back in the game ASAP. Hopefully I'll be in soon.

As a side note, I've also talked to Jerry and Brent about dropping Shakka for a cleric-type character, since we probably need a cleric more and I'm just not feeling it with Shakka. More on this story later (after I talk to Kathy)...

Hope everyone is well.
Jeff.

Mira  d20+4=15 d20+2=15
Sunday June 13th, 2004 10:09:11 AM

Mira hugs Evan, giving him a tender kiss on the cheek before holding out her left hand.

Once the ranger has placed the ring on her finger, the sorcerer holds her hand out and admires it, "any special properties?" she asks with a wink.

With the modifications to the cart complete, Mira hides her weapons in the false bottom. She tosses her pack and other gear into the cart. She retrieves a tent and the fishing net from the apartment and adds them to the gear. With great care, she wedges the cage of woven sticks into a corner of the cart, so that the small messenger inside won't get bounced around. She smiles up at Evan, "I'll walk alongside, with Arm."

After an uneventful trip during which Mira enjoys the scenery, and small talk with her companions, Mira approaches the innkeeper, and makes arrangements for a room suitable for a married couple. Before retiring for the night she has a quiet meal with her "husband". She engages the server in a little conversation (Gather Info=15) and listens to the conversations around her (Listen=15) to learn what she can of the area in hopes that it will help with their plan.

ADM Brent {Estate Crew}
Sunday June 13th, 2004 8:36:51 PM

{OOC: I am going to break the posts up into the Estate group and the City group while the group is split}

It is slow going inside Plateau City with the cart. The chaos left by the Dragons seems to have left many people without loved ones, homes or livelihoods, so there are more people wandering around without purpose, making the streets more congested.

That changes as you make your way through the outskirts of Plateau City proper before reaching the second plateau. The crowds thin out and then disappear but for the occasional group of riders entering and leaving the city and the merchants and farmers coming or leaving the First Plateau.

Inside the Coachman, Arm quickly retires to his room to work on some ballads while Evan and Mira stay in the Common Room listening and observing the crowd.

The Coachman seems to cater mostly to the merchant and coach crowd. Most of the talk, as you can imagine on the Dragons and the future.

Two merchants sitting at the table next yours are discussing the state of the second plateau. From their statements, Mira and Evan are able to deduce that most estates seem to have been spared any damage to the estate homes, however several had damage to their crops which both merchants seem concerned about.

There is a small group of young men that look a bit out of place in the inn, with rich fashions slightly out of date.

Mira decides they must be country nobility. They are leaning forward in their seats discussing something too low for anyone to hear. They seem to lear at anything in a skirt, dress, mumbling to one another in low voices and laughing too loud.

Kadaz
Sunday June 13th, 2004 8:41:34 PM

Kadaz pipes up with an idea. "Avandri said she was staying in Plateau City to look for her grandfather's man of affairs. We should tell her that we 3 are staying her, at least for the next few days, and that if she needs us she can call on us."

"But also, her grandfather Daval was a successful adventurer. Perhaps one of the bards, maybe on older one, remembers his name. If so, we may be able to track down some of his friends. Let's find us some bards!"

ADM Brent {City Crew}
Sunday June 13th, 2004 8:57:29 PM

Baldis seems happy to see Conner, and gladdened that no one in the group appeared to be hurt. He doesn't see a problem with that. He suggests that it may take a week to two to create a quiver as designed.

Conner, Kadaz and Uriel all do some research both at the library and the office of the land registry.

Conner seems a bit distracted in discovering any information on the estate by the slightly bookish but cute librarian, Tayleah who he flirts with in between searches.

Uriel does find two pieces of information.

One is in a history of vineyards in Plateau City where there is made reference to Wycklea as being one of the only vineyards not to have been damaged by a freak icestorm in early spring about twenty five years back. The reference is made of the Wycklea vinters canniness for protecting their vines from the frost.

The other is the original bill of sale for the Estate to Daval forty years ago. There appears to be nothing out of the ordinary about the document.

Outside of the Hall of Records, Conner does not see any sign of that woman but none of the three of you fail to notice the enormous ears of one guy who does seem to be following you. When he catches your eye after the second time, he frowns before darting down a side passage and disappearing into the crowds.

Mira
Monday June 14th, 2004 5:11:10 PM

The sorcerer toys with the idea of approaching the table of young masters, in hopes of eavesdropping on their conversation. Afraid of how Evan might react if the fellows become rowdy, she thinks the better of it. She makes note of their number and appearance however.

After the meal, she takes Evan's hand, and blushing furiously, heads for the room the innkeeper has assigned them. Stopping in front of the closed door to their chamber, Mira says "We must share what little information we have gathered with Arm. Tomorrow at breakfast?"

The green-eyed woman waits for the ranger to open the door.

Kadaz  d20+1=6
Monday June 14th, 2004 8:04:03 PM

Kadaz quickly turns after big ears. "I'm getting tired of being followed. I want to ask that guy some questions." He pushes his way through the crowd, trying to keep an eye on the target but only goes a few feet before losing the guy in the crowd. "Sometimes I wish I was 5' tall" he grumbles as he returns to the others. (spot check 6)

Conner  d20+3=6
Monday June 14th, 2004 8:54:28 PM

Conner pushes after Kadaz, struggling to keep the large eared man in sight, but he is gone. [Spot=6]. "Let's walk down this alley and see if he turns up again" he says to the dwarf.

Evan  d20+7=9
Monday June 14th, 2004 11:19:04 PM

Evan tries to concentrate on their surroundings but cannot help but be distracted by the role he is playing with Mira. He finds himself wishing their marriage was real, rather than an act they are putting on.

Evan nods agreement with Mira's idea to speak with Arm in the morning. He reaches out and opens the door for the lovely Mira, his breath catching in his throat as he waits for her to enter. Once inside the room, Evan makes certain the door is locked behind them then prepares a place on the floor next to the bed for him to sleep, trying his best to not be aware of the lovely woman who will be sleeping on the bed.

Mira
Monday June 14th, 2004 11:40:15 PM

Mira tells Evan not to be foolish. The bed is big enough for the both of them, and they need a good night's sleep if they are to make any headway on the morrow.

The sorcerer will set out the peasant's clothes she bought, in preparation for the next day. Trying to ignore the man with whoom she shares the room, Mira will strip off her adventuring gear, down to her knee length chemise. After a quick toilet at the wash basin, she looses her hair from it's tight braid, sets her spectacles and a small dagger on the nightstand, and crawls into bed.

Uriel  d20+4=14
Tuesday June 15th, 2004 1:22:44 AM

Uriel also tries to follow the guy but loses him in the crowd. {Spot:14}

He chuckles at Kadaz's comment, "Yeah well I wish I were seven feet tall although I don't think it would make a difference. That guy with the handles for ears - how did he disappear into the crowd with those ears?"

As they return to walking, Uriel turns to Kadaz, "Where would there be the best chance to find a bard with some tales? That's a good idea."

ADM Brent {Country Crew}
Tuesday June 15th, 2004 1:27:33 AM

Evan and Mira spend a few hours tossing and turning in bed, too tense to sleep but as the noise from downstairs finally ends, they are able to rest.

In the morning they wake up refreshed having slept more soundly than either can remember sleeping before.

The three of you share breafast, and Mira updates Arm on the gossip of the Coachman.

{OOC: Anything else you want to do here before leaving for the estate?}

ADM Brent {City Crew}
Tuesday June 15th, 2004 1:38:45 AM

Not ready to be thwarted by the swift disappearance of 'Ears', the three of you head down the alley you saw him duck into.

The side street is crowded with people and after
about twenty feet, you think you know how the guy disappeared so quickly because there are smaller alleys on both sides of the street here.
As you look down the left passage, you hear the racket of something falling, and footfalls.

{Still following?}

Arm
Tuesday June 15th, 2004 5:55:16 AM

After a night of seclusion in his room, Arm has prepared some cursory ditties & sonnets for the task ahead, but he also plans to use much of his older material as well. Upon hearing what Mira was able to gather, he says, "Hm...nothing much there to help us, but I honestly didn't expect affairs of ANY estate to be discussed in an open forum such as this. Unless the two of you have any objections, I say we head out so we can hopefully be admitted and settled in by nightfall.".

Mira  d20+2=14
Tuesday June 15th, 2004 7:18:21 PM

Mira tosses and turns as the noises below, and the proximity of the handsome ranger result in a less then restful mindset.. In the wee small hours of the night she finally falls into the dreamless sleep of the truly exhausted.

She wakes at the first sign of dawn and reaches out, only to find the bed empty. The green eyed woman washes up, braids her hair and coils it in a demure bun, replaces her glasses, dresses in the peasant's simple skirt and bodice cinched about her chemise. The sorcerer tucks the dagger in her boot.

At breakfast, she updates Arm on her observations of the night before and suggests hopefully, "if the estate has suffered any damage from the dragons, they must surely have need for hands to effect the repairs?"

After breakfast, Mira thanks the innkeeper for his hospitality, before repositioning her gear in the cart. She will walk beside the cart towards their destination, keeping an eye open for anthing of interest. (Spot=14)

Evan
Tuesday June 15th, 2004 8:46:10 PM

Despite the nearness of the lovely sorceress, Evan drifts off to sleep, still recovering from the dragon's attack on the city. He awakes just before dawn as he usually does, to find his arm draped over Mira. At some point during the night, he had shifted closer to the lovely woman. He hopes she hasn't noticed as he quickly slips from bed and dresses so that he can go take care of Ariel. For some strange reason, he seems to have quite a bounce in his step this morning and finds himself smiling for no reason at all.

Evan returns to the Inn to join Mira and Arm for breakfast. He still finds himself smiling, especailly when he sees Mira and sees that she does not seem angry at all. He settles down in a chair next to her and leans over to give her a soft peck on the cheek, thinking that is probably what a husband would do when he first sees his wife in the morning. Evan is beginning to enjoy this charade and privately hopes that it will take a bit of time to find the solution to the problem they have been asked to solve.

Kadaz  d20+2=6

ADM Brent {Country Crew}

{Weren't you three going to try and go in as separate groups?}

As you walk the quiet country roads of the second plateau, you notice that most of the traffic appear to be messengers, or small groups of rich riders, and the occasional band of Sheriffs patrolling the area.

You begin to near the area of the land that you believe to be Wycklea, there is no visible traffic nearby.

{Make sure you let me know who is going in first and such for my next post}

ADM Brent {City Crew}
Wednesday June 16th, 2004 2:37:08 AM

As you make your way into the small alleyway,
there is really only room for you to walk single file because of the odd person coming the other direction. The buildings here, a few floors high, seem to droop over slightly making the alley gloomy at best.

Conners does hear footfalls in the distance ahead aways, the alley is not entirely straight and so you don't have a straightline distance ahead, although you can see about 30 feet forward.

You come to a t intersection and start to dispair before you realize that there is smeared footprint in the muck of the alley leading away from the alley you are in now.

Down this alley, it appears that there is a possible open area only about 100 feet from your location at the intersect. You can tell the opening from the amount of ambient light that is brighter in that direction.

Arm  d20+2=5 d20+2=15
Wednesday June 16th, 2004 6:17:05 AM

Arm, hearing Mira's remark, brightens somewhat and says, "Aye. If that be the case, then they should definitely welcome the skills of a "carpenter"," as he glances in Evan's direction and smiles.

Later in the day, as they approach the estate proper, he says, "The two of you go on ahead and present yourselves. I shall slip into the woods for a bit and meet up with you later. If by some chance either I do not find you or one or both of us are not are accepted into their employ, I shall definitely seek you out tomorrow. May the gods look favorably upon you, and I shall see you soon.". Saying so, he listens and looks around casually for signs of other people (listen=5, spot=15), and when the coast is clear, slips off into the woods far enough not to be seen by those passersby on the road, and waits for a bit to begin his part in the infiltration of the estate.

Evan guides Ariel and the cart down the lane at a slow comfortable pace so that Mira can easily keep up. Feeling well rested today, Evan has no trouble keeping his atttention on his surroundings as they approach the estate. (spot-23, listen-21)

He nods to Arm as Arm splits off from them, then reaches down to offer Mira a hand up onto the cart so that they can speed up their trip and reach the estate before nightfall.

Mira
Wednesday June 16th, 2004 8:04:55 PM

Mira wishes Arm good luck. "I hope we can soon hear your new tunes!" she calls, then waves a farewell to the bard as he slips into the woods.

The sorcerer accepts Evan's invitation to climb into the cart. She hopes the added weight is not too much for the pretty pony. Mira brings her knees up, and rests her chin on the rough folds of her peasant's skirt. She fixes on the back of the ranger's head, and smiles at how the sun makes a halo of sorts as it shines throught his blonde locks.

I wonder what type of reception we will get? she thinks as they approach the estate.

Conner  d20+3=4

"This way" the fighter calls as he spots the footprint leading down yet another alley. Conner readies his shield but leaves his sword sheathed as he hurries down the alleyway. The narrow confines of the passage prevent him from seeing much as he tries to keep his eyes open for trouble [Spot=4]

After Arm leaves Mira and Evan, they continue until they reach another stone walled, gated estate. In ornate, archaic letters it says Wycklea.

There is a small slotted box for dropping posts through to the other side, and a small bell as well. The large, ivy-covered gates are closed and if you check, locked. There doesn't appear to be anyone 'on guard' but you do see, by craning your neck and looking through the bars, you do see a small cottage very nearby.

Presuming that you ring the bell, you hear a door creak open and then shut and hear muttering getting closer.

An old man, bald but for wisps of white hair around his ears and nape comes shambling over to the gates. You hear a metallic clanking sound and then a loud "hurumph!" followed by, "Rang the bell, but there's no posts. No posts, why did I come all the way out here? To check the post. At least that nincompoop Jarvis isn't putting any more..."

The old man's voice trails as he looks through the gate. His faded blue eyes widen in suprise and then narrow as he appraises the two of you.
He blows out a long breath and shakes his head before saying anything.

"Well, Hello there. Rang the bell did you? What are you looking for? The Mistress doesn't abide by giving handouts to vagrants but I do have a little cheese and wine I can give you, I just can't pack it away like I used to," he pats his stomach for emphasis, "I am Josef Doorsman by the way. You can tell me your name when I return with the cheese and wine."

The little old man turns around and starts stumping off back towards the little cottage.

****
Arm moves off into some woods that have grown up outside the boundary of whatever estate is nearby. You can see dingy white stone wall about 50 feet from the road that travels parallel to the road. Inside the small copse of trees, you find alot of underbrush that you make a bit of noise going throug but no one is around to hear it. About 20 feet in, you think you have enough cover to keep from being seen from the road and settle down to wait awhile.

While you are waiting, you notice one patrol go by which leads to a couple of nervous seconds but it rides by without stopping.

A bit later, a small group of young men walking their horses stop across from the copse. Seven men total make up the group, three of which are younger wearing finery that has seen better times, and four hard cases, in worn but servicable leather armor, armed with short swords, short bows and daggers.

They appear to be discussing something important but you are too far to make out the words. One of the young men in finery, tall with dark hair, is pointing out something further down the road with his hands and making some other gestures. The largest of the men in armor is listening with something of a smirk on his face, his insolence showing through.

{First off Sorry for the technical problems - I am sending you the map of the situation, from this point on, post hit points, spells in effect, and ac in with the post name please.
I will be referring to some of the buildings inside the post so I hope it comes across o.k.}

As you move up into the open area, you see that it is roughly 20 by 15. There is another alley diagonally from the alley you are in.

As in the alley there is mud and refuse in the 'courtyard' as well as some rotten crates here and there. As in the alley there are some doors in the buildings facing the courtyard but only two of them look like they are used frequently. The others have boards across them. The small brown door in the blue building (which you can't actually see at the moment) and the brown building next to the two men are the two seemingly accessible doors.

In front of the other alley you see two men neither of whom you have seen before as well as the one with the huge ears. Ears (marked with an E) is 15 feet up with a bow. The larger of the two men has a short brown cloak on (denoted with C).

The two men have their weapons out and grin silently motioning you forward. Conner has to move in a ways to let Kadaz and Uriel get a view of the courtyard.

The shorter of the two men engages Conner with his short sword. {Hit AC:15 Dmg:4}

As Kadaz enters the crate next to the entrance is knocked down revealing a third man.

At nearly the same instant, you hear a short cry of pain from Uriel and the sound of metal on metal as he is stabbed from behind. {Hit AC:22 Dmg:10}

The big eared Archer fires an arrow at Kadaz, hooting a bit as he does.{Hit AC:16 Dmg:2}

"Mr. Doorsman," calls Mira, "Don't go away!"

If the old fellow turns around, Mira will continue, "My husband here, and I are seeking work." After adjusting her glasses on her nose, the sorcerer continues convincingly, "we lost our home in the city during a recent attack by great wyrms. Almost everything we owned is gone. One day we hope to rebuild, but in the mean time, we must eat. We ask but very small wages if room and board are provided. Surely you must have need of worker's at this grand estate? My husband is a carpenter by trade, and I can be a lady's maid, or work in the kitchen."

An arrow passes by Kadaz's head and he looks up in surprise. This is much more violent than Kadaz had been expecting. He wishes he had his battle axe out and not his flail. Maybe soon, but not now. Kadaz rushes straight at the newly revealed man ('T') and swings his light flail, trying to do as much damage as possible. But the flail passes harmlessly past the man's head, not even close. (Hit AC 7)

Kadaz needs more help. He yells to Birdie "Attack!" However, the dog is distracted by some bit of trash in the alley and choses instead to sniff at it and the roll over on it. "You aren't here for some food? You want some work? We have a handyman but there is always work for a good carpenter."

He looks at Evan, "You any good son?...", without waiting for a reply, he continues, "well, I guess I should gather you two up to go see the Mistress. Hold on."

The old man stumps off and returns just as you are about to throw your hands up. He has a small buggy being pulled by a mule. He clucks the small mule around to the gate and then gets down.

He opens the gate and lets you walk in your horse and cart. "Hitch your cart over here next to the cottage and I will run you up with Grey here." He pats the mule for emphasis.

As Mira and Evan travel toward the manor house proper, they see the vineyards spreading out in all directions. As they get closer to the house, they see other things growing: formal gardens and what looks like a hedge maze in front, and a kitchen garden and herbarium in the back.

Josef leads you around to the rear entrance. He raps briefly at the door before opening it.

You find yourselves in the bustle of a busy kitchen, presided over by a halfling woman wrapped in a large apron. "Josef Doorsman!" she calls in a scolding voice. "Have you taken leave of your senses? You know better than to come traipsing in here when we're all hard at work--" her eye falls on Mira and Evan, "--and with strangers in tow, to boot! Mistress won't care for this."

"Now then, Dwimma," Josef says soothingly, exhibiting little concern over the woman's ire. "This nice couple's looking for work, and anyway, I know better than to bother you with them, busy as you are. Where might I find Aeldrik?"

The halfling woman sniffs, somewhat mollified. "Tending to his duties, no doubt, as you should be tending to yours. Away with you then! We've work to do." So saying, she begins ordering her staff around with renewed vigor.

"This way," Josef says, and leads you down a short, plain hallway, through a door, and into a larger, fancier hallway. He stops and looks about him.

Just then a nearby door opens and a woman emerges. She is tall and strong-looking, with blonde hair swept up into an elegant style and held in place with a jeweled hairnet. Her gown appears both costly and fashionable, and her beautiful features wear an icy frown. "Josef? What is the meaning of this?" she demands sharply, glaring suspiciously at Mira and Evan.

Somewhat taken aback to have encountered his employer face to face, Josef fumbles for a reply. "Er...Mistress, I was looking for....that is to say, they....they seek employment."

The blonde woman arches a haughty brow. "Really. How interesting."

Arm does his best to remain still and listen, but before too much longer a rough voice says, "My lord, we will be ready," and that seems to end the discussion.

If the man bends over to pick it up or otherwise drops his guard Kadaz will swing at his back (attack roll 22, damage 11).

"Birdie, attack!" yells Kadaz, trying to get some help from the dog (handle animal check 6). But Birdie is still busy attacking the dead human. He has gotten a strong grip on an arm and is shaking his head back and forth, trying to rip the arm off in order to carry it away as a chew toy.

Lacking Birdie's help Kadaz tries some psychology. "Run away now or I will let the dog eat your arm off." (Intimidate check 0) But his attempt at intimidating the opponent comes off so poorly that even Birdie looks up and wonders what Kadaz is talking about.

Kadaz uses his flail expertly again, stripping the short sword out of the caped man's hands.

When the archer sees that, you hear him say, "Steal this!" and he disappears, the sounds of his footfalls following him away.

The caped man says, "Curse you stumpie! Why can't you fight like a warrior?" He throws his dagger at Kadaz but it flies way off the mark and the guy turns to run. {AoO for both of Kadaz and Conner - I will let Kadaz's other attach be his roll - it hits and the guy takes 11 points of Damage.}

"Stumpie? You calling me names?" Kadaz wonders. "Coward!" he yells at the back of the fleeing man.

His anger vented, Kadaz runs to Uriel, pulling a vial out of his tunic as he does so. He carefully lifts Uriel's limp head and pours half of the vial into his mouth, making sure to hold the head so that none of the precious liquid is lost. (Use a vial that has 2 cure light wounds potions in it, 7 hp recovered).

Kadaz looks up carefully at the rooftops. If there is no apparent threat he then walks over to Birdie, who by now has managed to severely mangle one arm of the dead man. Birdie looks up, blood running from his jaws, and wags his tail in total domination over this foe. Kadaz pets Birdie, says "Good dog" several times, and manages to get the other half of the vial into Birdie, curing all of the dog's wounds. (6 hp recovered)

"Quick, search the bodies." Kadaz says to Conner. "The guard will be coming soon." Assuming no opponent appears Kadaz will help strip the dead of valuable items (weapons, coins, ...) as well as doing a quick search for as any sort of identification or clue to why they set this ambush, or who might have paid them.

Kadaz will make a deliberate point to pick up the long sword, short sword and dagger lost by the hooded man, chuckling as he does so. "Stumpie, that's rich. And him running way," he mutters to himself. These items are going to look good hanging on the wall of Kadaz's room as trophies.

The woman is delighted with Arm's singing. "My word!" she says. "Your voice is fit for a king's hall, young man. Oh!" she says looking behind her. "Here is my husband now. Josef!"

It is indeed Josef, with Evan and Mira in tow, returning to the gatehouse. "This nice young couple come looking for work," he explains to his wife, "but Mistress wouldn't hear of it. Too suspicious, she says." He sighs. "And mayhap she's got the right of it after all. But I've offered them a bite and a sup before they move along."

The gatekeeper's wife clicks her tongue. "And this nice young fellow is a bard, and a good one, too," she says. "He asks leave to play at the house, but..."

Josef shakes his head. "It's not a good time, lad," he says sadly. "But you might as well join us for a little bite of something before you go."

Kadaz does not hear or see any apparent threats on the rooftops. After he comforts Birdie, he is able to collect his 'trophies'.

Conner is able to cut the purses of the downed men.

No one hears the sound of guards. It is a bit disconcerting because you begin to realize they may not be coming. Assuming that you aren't prepared to stick around and see, you return the way you came and get back out to the more travelled thoroughfares of the city.

While you do get a few sidelong glances from the people on the streets no one stops you from heading back to the inn. The few times you see the guard, you are able to circle around to prevent any potential problems. After what seems an eternity, you arrive back at the apartment.

Looking at the pouches that you scavenged, you find 10 gold in each of them but the second pouch also has an odd gold coin, minted with a different face on the coin.

Back in the alleyways, the three bodies lay silent, until the rats come...

Once back home Kadaz wants to clean up. The wounds he has suffered have left him bruised, sore and bloody. "Uriel, could you spare a cure from the wand? My wounds are slowing me and I'd appreciate feeling better. And Conner is also significantly wounded. Could you use the wand on him?" After this, a trip to the bath house, followed by giving Birdie a bath, leaves them much refreshed.

Kadaz will inspect the strange coin they found very carefully. "Uriel and Conner, maybe a bartender who sees a lot of coins would know more about this. I think that we've earned ourselves a good supper and some drinks. And after all," Kadaz breaks out into a grin here and jingles the 30 gp found today "we have some extra gold."

Before leaving Kadaz ask everyone to inspect the 3 weapons carefully. Are any masterwork items, seem out of the ordinary, or have some identifying mark? If any appear to be more valuable than ordinary he'll carry it along for safekeeping. The others will be mounted on the wall in the common room of their home. (spot roll 15 for inspecting weapons)

Kadaz will be watchful on the way to the inn just in case hooded guy reappears (spot roll 18) Over supper Kadaz continues the discussion about what to do. "Again we seem to be closer than we realize to something important. Who has been watching us? And this makes me believe that Avandri is in more danger than we had thought. We we ambushed outside of the Hall of Records and never got a chance to look for her. I think tomorrow we should look for Avandri. And remember, we were watched by a half-elf woman outside of the Flying Pigs Inn. She could have been keeping an eye on Avandri and passed along information about us. We should keep looking for her. And especially, we need to keep our guard up. The leader of the ambush today escaped, along with the big-eared archer."

Kadaz will enjoy greatly his supper, glad to be alive while others aren't. He orders an extra supper just for Birdie.

Uriel groans a bit as he sits back down. He kicks back a mug of water, draining it. "I am going to go sleep for now, Sorry friends, that was a close one today."

After spending several hours with Conner in Sampson's Kadaz is not ready to fall asleep. He is till a little wired from today's battle. He puts away the food he got for breakfast and then sits down at the big table. Looking around for something to do that isn't noisy he remembers the journal that Conner had given him several days ago. At that time Conner had said to keep a record. Now would be a good time to start.

In the still of the night, with Birdie dreaming by his feet, Kadaz starts documenting what they've learned about Avandri's situation. He tries to organize what he knows in a logical manner in order to keep things in order. After several hours he is finally tired enough to sleep.

In the morning, over breakfast, Kadaz asks Conner and Uriel "Please look over what I've written in the journal you provided, Conner. I've tried to remember everything we've learned about Avandri. And what has happened. Did I miss anything?"

Mira follows Josef back to the gates of the estate. When she sees Arm, she gives him a wink, then shrugs her shoulders. "I do not know the mistress of this place, but she was in a sour mood when we met her and offered our skills to the service of this grand place."

Mira will break bread with Josef and his good-wife, and make small talk with them. She will tell them about how Plateau City was attacked by dragons, and ask if the plateau was spared. She will try to extract a little information about what has been going on locally, and what may have contributed to the mistress' bad mood. (Gather Info=23)

"It might be helpful for us to know a little about the area and what difficulties the people face, if we are to fare better at the next estate, you know," she ways with a serious look.

In Town:

Kadaz, Conner, and Uriel are all feeling a little battered after the fight. Taps from the Cure wand help the worst of it, and a good meal at Sampson's helps still more.

You show Hamm the odd coin and he nods. "Oh, one of those," he says, not very interested. "An older coin, my friends, one they stopped minting about 30, 40 years ago. You still see 'em from time to time, though."

Kadaz's inspection of the weapons and gear yields nothing of interest; all of the items are of standard make and could have been purchased anywhere.

In the Country

Josef and Mella set a fine table, and you eat a good meal. They are interested in hearing of your travels, and listen in horrified awe of the dragon attacks.

"We heard about it, of course," Mella says, returning to the stove to replenish the large bowl of stew. "But it's different to know somebody who actually went through it! Mercy! How frightened you must have been!"

Josef tells you that the neighborhood is generally a quiet, peaceful one. "We've had some trouble with break-ins," he confides, "but none of the other estates seem to be affected. And I'm sure many of them will need willing workers--or will welcome some good entertainment," he adds, with a smile for Arm. "Here at Wycklea, though--well, Mistress Sarla don't know who's been doing the breaking in, or what they're after, so she's on edge, like. And you showing up out of the blue--well," he shakes his head. "She's afraid you might be spies, you see, of whoever's been doing it. And I don't know but she's right in being cautious. You can't be too careful."

"Not that we think you're dishonest," Mella interjects with a hard look at her husband. "It's just---well, better safe than sorry. You understand."

The tough fighter ponders aloud, "I wonder what last night was all about?" he grumbles, adding "a random attack by thugs, or somehow related to our new quest?" Conner shakes his head, any ideas eluding him.

In Town:

Connor, Kadaz, and Uriel discuss the previous day's happenings and what to do next. Was the fight simply a random attack, or was there something more behind it? And how could they find out.

They discuss investigating the coin further, and checking on Avandri.

In the Country:

"Nothing was taken," Mella replies to Mira's query. "That's what's so odd. The thief--if it is a thief--passed up the tapestries, the silver plate, Mistress Sarla's jewels, everything. What can they be about?"

When Mira asks about security measures, Josef merely says, "Don't you worry on that score. We're ready for them if they should try again."

It would seem that breaking into Wycklea would be a difficult untertaking.

Arm finishing his meal, casts a sidelong glance at Mira & Evan, and says to their hosts, "Well, I thank thee for thy hospitality, but I'd best be moving on...if there is no work for me here, then I'd best begin to look elsewhere. A very good day to you all.".

Saying so, he bids their leave, and once outside the gates, travels a decent distance away from the estate (but not far enough away that he cannot see the entrance), and ducks into the woods to await the arrival of Mira & Evan, anxious to speak to them.

Kadaz
Tuesday June 29th, 2004 7:26:05 AM

Kadaz considers Conners questions. "Last night's attack was certainly aimed as us. We are 3 fighters, armed and armored. No one is going to consider us easy pickings. Common thieves will wait for a group that appears to be easier to attack and, let's be realistic, richer.

"And remember, we followed a guy with big ears into the alley. When we got there he was on a rooftop with bow at the ready. He knew he was leading us to an ambush.

"I think someone is watching Avandri and then following those she talks to. We have to assume that all of our steps will be noticed.

"So today we can follow up on the coin and track down Avandri. Anything else? I had thought we might be able to find an older bard who might remember Daval. And Daval's man in town, though Avandri has a much better chance of finding him than we do.

"I just had a thought. From Avandri's description of her cousin it seems unlikely that Sarla has a lot of contacts here in Plateau City. If she is behind the attack on us I wonder how she managed to hire those thugs? And if she did, did she use old coins from Daval's adventuring days to pay them off. Or is there a 3rd party involved who is trying to get Wycklea for himself?"

Kadaz's forehad furrows in deep thought. Then he chuckles and shakes his head. "Too much thinking and you can see conspiracies under every table. Let's follow up on what we have in front of us. Birdie, come on! We're off."

Birdie jumps up and is ready to go. After the battle the day before, a very good supper and a good breakfast she is ready to to that again. Her tail wags in anticipation.

Evan
Tuesday June 29th, 2004 5:38:05 PM

Evzn nods to Arm as he leaves, a salutation from one stranger to another. After Arm leaves, Evan will look to Mira to see if she has anything else she would like to ask. He is fairly certain that they won't be able to get the gatekeeper to open up to two perfect strangers about the security precautions around the estate. Evan will signal to Mira that he is ready when she is.

Mira
Tuesday June 29th, 2004 7:16:55 PM

Mira thanks Josef and his good wife for the meal. When the couple aren't looking, she extracts a single gold coin from one of her pouches and slips it under the rim of her plate where it won't be found until the table is cleared, and she and Evan are long gone.

With a heavy sigh, the sorcerer will take Evan's hand in hers as they return to Ariel and the cart, and then together, make their way back down the road from the estate.

"An attempt to break into the estate does not seem a wise one for we three to attempt at this time," she sighs, as she scans the sides of the road and the nearby copse of trees for the bard. "Let us make for the inn and the rendez-vous with the others. Maybe they learned something from their enquiries in the city?" Mira sighs again, "when I was a child, and worked the river at night with my dad, there were sometimes folks out who were real clever at hiding. They could get into and out of all sorts of places. I'm sorry I never learned their skills."

In Town:

Somewhat anxious about their employer, Kadaz, Connor, and Uriel return to the outcast quarter to speak with Avadri. She is alarmed when you tell her of the attack.

"I-I must admit, I feared something like this," she says, shaking her head. "Sarla is quite ruthless, and determined to have Wycklea for her own."

She also recognizes the coin. "Grandfather had many such at Wycklea," she says, smiling fondly in memory, "from his adventuring days." She hesitates, then continues, "My friends, do not think I would ask you to further endanger yourselves. If you wish, you may end our arrangement and keep the funds I advanced you."

In the Country:

Arm leaves the gatehouse, and Mira and Evan follow some minutes later. They meet a short distance from the estate to discuss possible strategies from this point.

Kadaz
Wednesday June 30th, 2004 10:42:02 AM

Kadaz also asks more questions. "We are not going to stop now. We were mainly concerned about your safety. I believe that you are being watched and that is how we came to be attacked. As Uriel asked, do you have any protection?

"And by the way, were you successful in locating your father's man in town?"

Mira
Wednesday June 30th, 2004 7:16:22 PM

The green eyed woman is sorely troubled that the group has learned so little. She feels a little ambivalent about the whole situation and voices her concern to her companions, "I really like this Josef and his good-wife. The cook seemed a nice sort of person as well. They seem loyal to their mistress, and I would hate to take them on if they came to her defense." Mira shakes her head as the little party makes their way back down the road, "I would be more comfortable if we had some convincing evidence that this Sarla is as bad as our patron, Avendri makes out."

Evan
Wednesday June 30th, 2004 8:23:38 PM

Evan is a little concerned as well. He signs to Mira to translate to Arm. The gatekeeper and his wife seem like good people. If Sarla were truly as evil as Avendri makes her out to be, why would they continue to work for her? I think there is something going on here that we haven't seen yet.

I think it best that we make our way back to the others, and confront Avendri to either come clean, or bid us farewell.".

OOC: Um...Mira? I don't know if leaving that coin was wise...I could be wrong, but didn't you say that you and Evan had lost your house and were looking for work? If that's the case, then people normally don't throw gold about hither & yon... :) No offense, of course...just an observation...

"I thank you for your concern," Avandri says. "The Inn here is safe enough; they have their own guard at night and there are plenty of people around. I just cannot venture far from--well, not home," she amends with a wry smile, "for I have no home now. But I shall stay close to the Inn, have no fear."

"I did succeed in locating my grandfather's man of affairs," she replies with a pleased smile. "We are meeting tomorrow--here," she adds hastily, "so I won't be traveling across the city. We'll do well enough."

Conner does not sense anything untoward in her answers.

In the Country:

Mira, Evan, and Arm gather on a deserted stretch of road and discuss their concerns. Are they working for the right party in this dispute?

You are discussing the possibilties when a loud, dramatic voice calls, "Stand and deliver!"

You look up to see a group that Arm, at least, recognizes. Three wealthy, foppishly dressed young men on horseback, accompanied by four armed footmen in leather armor. The one who spoke--the dark-haired man Arm saw earlier--has added a large, astonishing feathered hat to his ensemble. He stands in his stirrups, chin up, chest out, and one arm extended, pointing a rapier directly at the three of you.

He obviously feels he cuts quite the dashing figure, but the effect is spoiled somewhat by the fact that since he's a good 50 feet away from you the rapier isn't much of a threat. The footmen, however, all bear good, solid crossbows and have them pointed at you.

"Send forth the Lady Sarla," continues the one in the hat, "and I will allow you to go in peace!"

Uriel
Thursday July 1st, 2004 1:18:31 AM

Uriel says rather forcefully, "Lady, I don't believe you are taking us seriously. Yesterday, the three of us were almost killed - I myself took a grievous wound from an archer that was waiting for us after luring us into a network of back alleys. You must not be flippant with your safety."

After they leave her, Uriel will turn to the others, "Either she has no common sense or else we are missing something. It's like she can't believe that she would be targeted!"

I suggest that you trade in your foppish clothing for a good pair of glasses.". Glancing at Mira, he continues "Perhaps THIS young lady wouldn't mind lending you hers for a moment so that you can tell the difference?".

OOC: Thanks to you, Kathy, with your "stand & deliver" comment, I'll have the song "Whiskey in the Jar" in my head for the rest of the day...LOL!!

She shrugs, and gives Arm a little grin, it wasn't much, any way."

When confronted by the pretentious fop, the sorcerer falls behind her companions. As she fumbles with the opening of her pouch, she tries to discern the silly fellow's intent (Sense Motive=21).

"His name is Raim and he has offices in the Gold Quarter," Avandri replies, "but he has graciously agreed to meet me here. I should be safe enough."

In the Country:

If possible, the young fop draws himself up even more. "Do not attempt to ply me with falsehoods!" he cries. "I know that you have concealed the Lady Sarla and are attempting to spirit her away from me. But True Love will win out! Hand her over at once!"

The footmen shift uneasily, taking your measure. One of them begins, "Er--my lord--"

"No!" the young man interrupts. "They are concealing her--I know it! Why, the exact same thing happened in 'Lady Dravwyn's Folly.' And 'The Haunted Mill.' Come out, Lady Sarla!" he calls. "There is nothing to fear."

Mira gets the impression that the young man is sincere, if misguided. He does not want to hurt you, but clearly has an overdeveloped sense of drama and is therefore likely to be unpredictable.

Seeing that the man is several flagons short of a full keg, Arm relaxes somewhat but remains wary, "My dear sir, we are but 3, and ONLY 3 people. We come from the city, these two losing their house from the dragon's attack and looking for work and a place to stay, and I am but a simple singer of songs looking for new audiences. We know not of this "Lady Sarla" NOR the "Lady Dravwyn" and "Haunted Mill" of which you speak. perhaps you have mistaken us for someone else?" (diplomacy=26). While still bearing a full-toothed smile at the man, he murmurs to Mira from the corner of his mouth, "See if you can attract the attention of the gatekeeper. We MAY need some help here.".

Uriel  d20+4=21
Friday July 2nd, 2004 5:20:01 PM

After they leave their patron, Uriel turns to the others, "We should check out that guy she mentioned."

While they are walking, Uriel tries to keep a sharp lookout for anything unusual. {Spot:21}

Conner
Friday July 2nd, 2004 5:31:17 PM

Conner agrees with Uriel, "Yes, let's find out more of this 'Raim', and while we're at it, we should find a dealer of antiquities and learn more of this coin."

Conner wonders how the others fare at Wycklea.

Mira  d20+5=23
Friday July 2nd, 2004 8:33:16 PM

Sensing the four footmen are almost as confused as she and her party, Mira steps past Arm and Evan. With her hands spread wide, palms facing out, she moves slowly towards the opposing group, closing the distance to 30 ft.

"See? I am surely not the lady you seek," she says, then lowering her gaze as if shy (Bluff=23) Mira murmurs demurely, "but I wish I was." Casting a quick glance back at Evan, the sorcerer continues to flirt with the pompous man in the big hat, looking at him with big green eyes through her little round spectacles, "please do not harm me,...um us,...my friend speaks the truth. We do not know the lady Sarla, or the mysteries of which you speak."

Kadaz
Friday July 2nd, 2004 10:49:16 PM

Kadaz has no good ideas. "OK. Let's find this Raim in the Gold Quarter. But then I'm fresh out of ideas. Shall we head out to the country?"

Evan (ac 12, hp 12)
Saturday July 3rd, 2004 10:22:42 AM

Evan quells his desire to immediately attack in the face of 4 loaded crossbows, so he decides to stay in character by backing up against the side of the small wagon as if in fear. When the fop demands the woman, Evan reaches into the wagon to pull back the tarp to show that there is no one there, also putting himself into position to pull his sword and axe from beneath the wagon. He frowns severely when Mira begins to flirt with the young fool, but maintains his place, hopefully being able to use the wagon as partial cover against one or two of the crossbows.

In Town:

Kadaz, Uriel, and Conner go to the Gold Quarter and make inquiries, but cannot locate a man of business named Raim.

In the Country:

"Pah!" the young blood scoffs at Arm. "A true teller of tales would know 'Lady Dravwyn's Folly.' And 'The Haunted Mill' and 'Midnight in Margarde' and all of them."

In fact, Arm does now recall the tales he is mentioning. Give me a Bardic Knowledge check to see what else you may note about them.

"Never say you haven't heard 'Lady Dravwyn's Folly!'" one of the others pipes up when Mira makes her plea. "You should make a point of hearing it sometime; it's absolutely ripping!"

"Search the wagon!" cries the leader, and the footmen, resigned, walk over and peer inside.

As the footmen react to the pompous noble's command, Mira reaches into the case slung by a narrow leather band from her shoulder. Selecting a slightly dog-earred parchment, Mira casts the spell* when the men are within 10 ft. of her. The sorcerer almost knows the words by heart, after the many hours spent pouring over the parchments back at the apartment.

Uriel
Sunday July 4th, 2004 10:04:32 PM

"I find it irregular at best that we can't find this contact of hers. I guess it is possible that we just missed him - Plateau City is quite big. I don't know, we should make contact with the others and see if they have had any luck." Uriel shrugs.

Uriel shakes his head and raises his eyebrows, "Maybe we should hire someone to follow Aviendra. For her own protection and to see if she has been keeping something from us."

Conner
Sunday July 4th, 2004 10:22:06 PM

"I don't trust her", Conner responds to Uriel's musings. "Half of me says stay here and follow her, the other half says it's time to meet the others."

Evan (ac 16, hp 12)
Monday July 5th, 2004 7:42:40 AM

As the footmen approach, Evan spies Mira pulling a scroll. When she begins to read the scroll, Evan draws his sword and axe and leaps forward to put himself between Mira and the footmen, standing at the ready in a defensive posture.

Arm  d20=13
Monday July 5th, 2004 10:23:35 AM

Arm believes that he remembers the tales of what this young man speaks, and while straining his mind to remember anything else about them (bardic knowledge=13), he draws his sword as he sees Evan come to action in case hostile movements occur.

Kadaz
Monday July 5th, 2004 8:49:23 PM

"Well Conner, maybe you're suspicious because we were jumped. Why would she hire us and then have someone attack us? I'm willing to believe her at this time. So, are we ready to head out to the country?

"Have any of you ever been out of Plateau City? I haven't. I hear that everyone rides a horse out there. And there are bandits behind every bush. What sort of equipment will we need?"

In Town:

Kadaz, Conner, and Uriel wrap up their investigation and decide to head out to meet the others. They discuss what provisions they may need.

Do you decide to stop by the lodgings before you leave?

In the Country:

The two footmen look bemused for a moment, then shake themselves and glare balefully at Mira, apparently unaffected by the spell (sorry; I rolled really high!). One of them points at her and cries, "My lord, she tried to cast a spell on me!"

"So!" says the fop. "You are working against me after all. I give you one final warning--surrender and produce Lady Sarla or face the consequences!"

Do you allow the footmen to search the wagon?

Arm recalls the tales mentioned by the young man and his friends as the worst sort of romantic drivel--very popular in certain circles, but not the kinds of tales Arm prefers to tell.

I am really looking forward to getting in...

No rush but my dwarf is starting to grow rust.

Uriel
Tuesday July 6th, 2004 2:30:19 AM

Uriel does need to stop by the lodgings to make sure he has a full complement of arrows in his quiver and so that he can pick up his shield.

To Kadaz, "It wouldn't be a bad idea to look at renting a wagon or some riding animals to move quicker."

Arm
Tuesday July 6th, 2004 4:58:31 AM

Arm advances so he stands next to Evan, protecting Mira further, and says, "We have told you no lies. We do not have her and if we did, we wouldn't let you take her. Attack if you must, but be prepared to face the consequences of your actions. We do not wish a fight, but at this point you leave us no choice.".

Conner
Tuesday July 6th, 2004 7:03:31 AM

"Maybe so my friend, maybe so", Conner replies to Uriel. "I will follow your lead, let's swing by our lodgings for a moment and then on to meet our friends. Perhaps they have fared better."

The burly fighter contemplates the idea of transportation and suggests to Uriel and Kadaz that they rent a horse and cart. "It's several days travel and I am no horseman, perhaps Sampson can arrange a steady horse and a cart for our use."

Mira  d20+5=13
Tuesday July 6th, 2004 7:39:44 AM

"Ooops! Sorry!" apologizes Mira to the soldiers. "It was only a Sleep spell" she admits red faced, retreating behind Evan. Then in a slightly hysterical voice, she calls to the noble, "you are no gentleman, but only a vandal, here to rob us, or worse!" The sorcerer brings a hand up to her forehead in a theatrical manner, as if about to swoon. (Bluff=13)

Kadaz
Tuesday July 6th, 2004 12:24:09 PM

"A horse and cart sounds good to me. Let's get them one and be off."

Evan maintains his defensive stance. As he has already pulled back the tarp to reveal their meager belongings, if the dandy wishes to avoid combat, he had best take his look and leave them be. Evan stares intently at the young fop, hopefully making it clear who his first target will be.

In Town:

Kadaz, Conner, and Uriel decide to head to the country to meet the rest of their group. They stop by their lodgings on the way, and discover that they have a visitor. A tall, muscular, red-haired dwarf is knocking on the door even as they approach it.

In the Country:

"She's not in the wagon, my lord," one of the footmen reports.

"What?" cries the young man. "Well...where is she then?" He looks around at all of you, as if seeing you for the first time. "Do you....do you mean to say you really haven't got her?"

One of the other young men on horseback calls, "She's not here, Jarvis, and I'm getting bored."

"And hungry," the other rider adds. "Let's go to the pub for a spot of something; this is a waste of time."

"Very well." The leader has regained some of his composure, and gives you a sweeping bow which looks rather silly on horseback. "We shall let you pass, for you do not have what we seek. However--"

"Oh, give it up, Jarvis, they don't know where she is," his friend says. He turns his horse and begins moving away; the other rider soon follows suit.

"Farewell, then," says Jarvis, obviously still trying to stay on script. "Until our next meeting." With that, he tries to turn and gallop away with a flourishing style, but his horse shies at the sweeping cloak and the young man is forced to clutch at the pommel just to keep his seat.

Warily, the footmen step back and lower their crossbows, watching as you leave.

Uriel
Tuesday July 6th, 2004 11:17:23 PM

Uriel loosens his sword in his scabbard and says, "You looking for someone, bub?" not in the mood to be trifled with from the lack of success they have seen so far.

Wilfire Ironhouse
Wednesday July 7th, 2004 1:58:36 AM

"Bub?" the well muscled dwarf with the shaggy red hair and long red beard asks with a slight tone of anger in his voice.

Taking a deep breath almost to calm himself the dwarf continues. "My name is Wilfire Ironhouse. I was sent here by a friend named Chersy Whiteberry. She said a promising group of adventurer's lived here and that maybe I could be of some aid to them. I don't know... maybe I have the wrong house."

The dwarf takes a step back. He appears to be teetering on the edge of staying and going.

Arm
Wednesday July 7th, 2004 5:14:29 AM

After they take leave of the odd party of men and once they are out of earshot, Arm relates to them his experience in the woods with the selfsame people, "I think that a LOT more is going on with them as well as our benefactor in town. Let us return with all haste to town to meet up with the rest.....we MUST figure out a plan of action with all of these strange people.".

Kadaz
Wednesday July 7th, 2004 7:47:06 AM

Kadaz steps forward and raises a hand. "Peace, we mean no offense. We are on guard because we've had some interesting encounters recently." Kadaz stops momentarily to eye the newcomer. "Are you a fighter?"

Mira  d20+5=23
Wednesday July 7th, 2004 5:29:05 PM

From her place behind Evan and Arm, Mira makes a quick gesture first pointing at the head of the one called Jarvis and then flicking her hand out from the wrist. Anyone spotting the movement might think she is waving bood-bye. (Mage Hand, Bluff=23) As the horse shies, the large feathered hat goes flying off 15ft to the side of the road.

Mira then takes her place beside the wagon and wearily trudges back towards the inn that is the rendez-vous point.

Conner  d20+3=13
Wednesday July 7th, 2004 6:27:32 PM

Conner looks over the dwarf in front of him for clues to his line of work [Spot=13]. The muscular fighter steps forward and offers his hand in greeting. My name is Conner, why don't you step inside and you can tell us more of yourself and this Whiteberry person."

Wilfire Ironhouse
Wednesday July 7th, 2004 8:19:09 PM

The red haired dwarf's face warms considerably when Conner intorduces himself.

"Greetings Conner", the dwarf says. Then looking towards Kadaz he continues.

"And you must be Kadaz. Ahh... Chersy Whiteberry described you all so perfectly. Anyhow to answer your questions about my profession- I am a priest, although not so long ago I sure did my share of fighting", he says with a smile.

"Anyhow in those days I was a lost soul, with no direction or purpose. But those days are gone. Now I've set myself to making a difference in the world. And so I have come to offer my services."

Uriel
Wednesday July 7th, 2004 9:19:48 PM

"Chersy Whiteberry sent you? Well, pardon my rudeness - we have been beset with frustrations at every angle of late and it is wearing thin on my patience," says the towering Paladin.

"We were just planning on heading out into the country to meet up with our friends, Mira, Evan and Arm. If you would like to come with us, we could get acquainted on the ride out. We are thinking of renting a wagon."
