Justin Webber (DM) Sleeping Tuesday June 29th, 2004 11:53:41 PM
Some of the group beds down for the night while others do this and that to keep themselves alittle busy before sleep finally wears in.
The nice tune that Savin plays gets one of the barbarian ladies who was stitching somethings attention and she watches him carefully before whispering slightly louder then a whisper though, "Musicweaver.."
The other barbarians in the tent continue to do what they were and before long a simple wolf stew is served inside the tent. In this time a number of around 15 barbarians have enter the tents, most eat their meal and quickly bed down for the night. From random talk that isn't in the barbarian language you find out that these people are the ones who lost their homes to the blowing snow outside and have yet to rebuild their homes.
Night passes slowly and throughout the night guard changes occur and now and then a draft of cold air blows in when the guards who get off of guard duty come in and get food and rest.
Savin d20+9=16 Tuesday June 29th, 2004 11:58:04 PM
Savin will notice the woman noticing him and will get up and say, "I hope my music isn't bothering you. I find it a comfort, when conditions get me down. Can I play you a song?"
If she agrees, he will say, "This is a song I learned from some gypsies. They played it to help the children rest easily at night."
Savin will play a soft lullaby to the lady and anyone else who wants to listen. (Perform roll 16)
Shiraz Wednesday June 30th, 2004 7:58:18 AM
Shiraz watches the barbarians that brought them here and when the leader is not occupied with his people Shiraz politely walks over to him, "How can we better prepare our bodies for this cold that you and yours seems better able to handle." Shiraz continues, "How can we survive up here?"
Sly and Luke Wednesday June 30th, 2004 7:59:17 AM
Sly just moves a little and tightens the bedroll alittle tighter, open one eye, then goes back to sleep.
Luke just sleep on (if he feel that they are in a safe place) "ZZZZzzzx."
Peerimus and Yorrick Wednesday June 30th, 2004 10:02:54 AM
Having a feeling all of their strength will be needed in the days ahead, Peerimus returns to the animal area shortly after dinner and finds a warm comfortable spot against the already sleeping Yorrick's side
Niobe (NPC'd by Al) Wednesday June 30th, 2004 11:02:44 AM
Niobe still feels pretty good. The wolf stew isn't haute cuisine, but it's filling. And it's warm. She spends her time watching the barbarians. They don't look like they have much. But, something must keep them going in this cold. And their animals too.
She observes them quietly, trying to figure out what that might be.
Ilsidur Wednesday June 30th, 2004 11:20:04 PM
Ilsidur eats a little of the stew, but figures others need it worse than he does. Then he rolls up in his cloak for a much-needed rest.
Justin Webber (DM) Morning Wednesday June 30th, 2004 11:58:17 PM
(OOC:My appologies on this post. At alittle after 8pm I got a super headache and ended up falling asleep after laying down to get rid of it.)
Savin finds that the lady knows now songs that Savin does but she does her best to clap out a small tune to help Savin beable to play it. Before Savin goes to sleep the barbarian lady smiles and speaks once, "night musicweaver."
The barbarian hunting party leader leaves the sleeping lodge to quick for Shiraz to talk to but one of the barbarian guards hear Shiraz's comment. The barbarian slaps a hand to his own chest and says, "live here since birth. t..t..tolerance built up...survival of the fitest." It's clear the young barbarian has trouble speaking to much common.
The weaver lady also looks up and shakes her head before lifting the tunic she is working on, "All clothes are looked at by shaman. He also helps with the tolerance of cold."
Everyone lays down and gets some sleep, many dreaming of the harsh trip in getting to the village of Smashed Teeth and others dreaming of various other things don't to finding his mom and sister.
The group gets to sleep in since the cold has zapped energy from everyone and in the morning are greeted by the barbarian hunting party leader who smiles abit in greeting and makes a small motion towards the already prepared breakfast, "Eat, get ready to meet leader."
Eating already are 5 large barbarians who have weapons sitting next to them and 2 females eating also. The males show various scars and the females look hardened also and possibly fighters. The females stick out most do to most of the females in the village that you seen so far don't look like fighters.
A older lady begins passing out plates of hot food to each person, including the group. The lady stops and smiels at Savin as she whispers, "Song weaver will play later? heard of skills."
(OOC:Will move everyone on to the leader of Smashed Teeth Village tomorrow. Hope your ready to play the leader for awhile Al since the meeting probably won't end that fast :).)
Sly and Luke Thursday July 1st, 2004 3:43:32 PM
Sly is awaken in the morning, It's clear that he has over slept. Half elves and elves ussaly only need four hours of sleep, but this time he slept over six hours. He into some dry underware, then goes into breakfast.
He and Luke sit at the table, "Good Morning al1." Some one serves him some food, Sly splits it in half, giving Luke half and Sly will eat the other half in silance.
After eating, Sly is now ready to go to the meeting.
Niobe (NPC'd by Al) Thursday July 1st, 2004 7:39:36 PM
Eventually, there is nothing more interesting to do than sleep.
Which, after yesterday's trip, winds up being much more refreshing than might have been expected.
Food is good. At least they're not having to fend for themselves. These barbarians may not talk much, but at least they're not hostile or ... cold. Niobe almost laughs out loud at the silent witticism.
Meeting the leader. This might be where the fun starts. Niobe eats quickly in anticipation.
Savin Thursday July 1st, 2004 9:31:05 PM
Savin will smile and say to the woman, "I am not a music weaver. I just enjoy playing and bringing joy to others through my music."
Savin will wake the next morning and start his usual exercises and then move on to his martial art forms. He will try to work up a good sweat to relax his body and prepare his mind for the meeting with the leader.
Shiraz Thursday July 1st, 2004 11:26:35 PM
Shiraz nods at the barbarian as he talks of tolerence and promptly falls asleep with everyone else. Shiraz accepts the hot food the following morning and notices the wepons each caries.
Ilsidur Friday July 2nd, 2004 12:03:57 AM
After a solid night's sleep, Ilsidur wakes refreshed, and warm. He says his morning prayers, and eats along with everyone else, smiling in thanks when the lady hands him his portion of breakfast. He polishes his armour and sharpens his waraxe, being careful not to invoke the fire on the blade. "I am not sure how these barbarians would take to magic like this," he thinks to himself.
Justin Webber (DM) Morning Talks Friday July 2nd, 2004 1:45:06 AM
After having a good nights sleep and getting some food after waking the group is finally lead to a large lodge like tent but this one only big enough for around twelve people at max. Standing out side the winter wolf hide lodge are a pair of barbarian guards who step to the side and one holds open the flap to the lodge and ushers you in quickly.
Inside the tent is much like the others. Various ornaments decorate the inside of the lodge/tent and some fish bones and other aquatic life ornaments. Inside the tent setting is a single man. The man's hair is completely gray and his aged but wise eyes move over each person as they enter. From the looks the man is in his late 60's and he wears clothing in the same color as his hair has become. A single necklace hangs from his neck that has many sea creature shells, teeth etc on it. In one corner of the lodge/tent is a single trident.
After everyone enters the man finally speaks in a aged, wise and deep gravely voice, "My name is Mekrenden. I lead this tribe and have been told one of the hunting parties found you all trying to freeze to death. Sit and tell me why your here in this land. I will judge if they saved you for good reason or not. An trust me, saving you comes at a price to you so the price will be made clear after I hear your story."
(OOC: I'm working on how to get the gruffness of the barbarian across without sounding down right mean. People please let me know your thoughts on how I'm doing so far.)
Sly and Luke Friday July 2nd, 2004 8:22:52 AM
Sly sit there lisening to Chief Barbarian who called himself Mekrenden, the more this man reminded him of his farther, He remembers the voice of his farther had a voice much like this. His (his farther) was a rought voice but had a note of love in there somewhere. But when his farther was angry, his voice was fearsome. Well enough of remembering the pass.
Sly stands, puts his hands together, putting his finger tops on his chin, then bows fron the waist (this is an wood elf greeting) Then he starts his story...
"Sir, My name is Sly Foxx and these people are my companions, they are Ilsidur our Cleric, Savin our monk, Shiraz our great Minotaur fighter, Peerimus our druid, Oh! yes his companion Bear Yurrick, Barnum our Illusinist and his companion Edgar, Niobe is our female rouge and very good with a knife and here by my side is my companion named Luke a very special dog.
I and my companions, we call ourselves The Children of Chaos, are here because I received some news of a slave camp or village here in Ice Vain. Where there are a lot of wood elves, among those wood elves was seen a female that look like My Mother. This was told to me by an old hermit that pass by this way about a week ago. I don't know if you have seen him, last I seen of him he was wearing white and love to be alone.
Sir, this is the reason that I have come to Ice Vain. I will not hid the fact that I want to resque my mother and my villagers that are inslaved there. Even if I should die, I plan to see for myself if my mother is still alive. But it seem that this place not only drain life but also our magic. With out our magic we cannot keep ourselves and our animals alive.
Sir, We await your judgement and the price to pay for our lives." After Sly's little speach Luke says "Good! very Good!" Sly then sit down again with no expression on his face, he just scratches Luke's ear.
Peerimus and Yorrick Friday July 2nd, 2004 11:32:13 AM
Peerimus looks about the tent and listens to what is said on both sides. Were his people from the cold he could easily imagine that this how they would be. Life of harsh necessity in a communal environment requires those you help to return that assistance and in that vein upon the declaration the group must pay for the assistance given Peerimus nods.
There is nothing to add to what Sly has said, they were here for him in this. Until the Chief changed the subject, more on any other topics would be wasted breath and rude and here wastefullness would not be looked upon favorably. The druid only could hope his other companions have learned this lesson.
OoC Gruffness is definately going well, I would suggest he be more concise in his manner as well. Avoiding belittling comments or personal attacks. In the land in which he lives I would expect dicissive conversation with outsiders, to the point and without patience for sidebarring and banter. He commands and orders, not ask and subtle pleasantries of civil politeness not being used. the strong survive the weak perish in a state of will and mind more so in physical body, not to say compassion and caring for the elderly and wounded would not happen. this rambling make sense?
Niobe (NPC'd by Al) Friday July 2nd, 2004 9:00:28 PM
Niobe recalls their first encounter with these barbarians. They seemed so hostile. And rude. In the end, though, they had helped out.
For the moment, she remains silent watching and awaiting further developments.
Justin Webber (DM) Talks Saturday July 3rd, 2004 10:42:30 AM
(OOC: Wow, only three posts. Moving on the game and sorry for it being on Sat.)
Mekrenden sits and listens to what is said and looks alittle weary and the talking dog Luke. After many moments of thinking and seeing not on else is speaking up he finally gives a curt nod and speaks, "Well, your story is interesting and we value our family members also. Here is the deal. For saving your lives you have the choice of helping us rebuild around here and make live easier for us so we can defend ourselves from the Twin Tusk Tribe who are near us and ready to invade to steal. Or you can go to battle against great odds that your in no shape to handle in this cold."
Mekrenden thinks more and looks to Sly, "All comfort magic is lessoned here, only items created in this land can comfort for a full effect."
Sly and Luke Saturday July 3rd, 2004 6:47:48 PM
Sly Stands again, look at the Big Chief Barbarian in the eyes, "I will abide the code of all elves, I cannot talk for my Companions, I will help rebuild the Village, the tribe safty always come first. Then we can better defend your tribe against the Twin Tusk Tribe.
But I must keep my people and our animals warm against this cold." Then Sly turns to his friends, "What say you? If we don't help these people, They may suffer the same faith that my Village did. I cannot see these people fall into slavery. After all we did defeat a dredded Evil Mummy in the desert. We defeated a young Red Dragon in the hills of Dramorea. We help the Children of the Earth rebuild a whole village. Can we do less here?? What say You? All of you??"
Luke just lays there half asleep or is he??
Savin Saturday July 3rd, 2004 7:36:01 PM
OOC Sorry I was out of town and away from my computer on Friday.
Savin steps forward and bows but never takes his eyes from the old man. "As my friend named me, I am Savin. I am curious to hear about the other task you mentioned. What would we battle against at great odds? For in truth, we are warriors and more skilled at battle than at carpentry.
If you can teach us the way to survive in the winter, you might be surprised at what we can accomplish."
Niobe (NPC'd by Al) Sunday July 4th, 2004 8:35:54 AM
With no hit at the irritation she feels at the man's demanding tone, not to mention that thought of being extorted into manual labor, Niobe puts forth a question of her own.
"I am Niobe uiCrevan. Would you also tell us more of this Twin Tusk Tribe. If they steal from you, would it be acceptable to, say, steal from them as well?"
Niobe ((Eunice OOC)) Sunday July 4th, 2004 8:11:42 PM
((Thank you very much Al for playing/NPCing Niobe for me in my absence. I greatly appreciate it. Thank you also for taking care of the ADM reports. Ceil thank you for taking care of the M Tap ADM reports.))
Ilsidur Sunday July 4th, 2004 9:00:19 PM
Ilsidur asks, "Is there someone here that I can learn from, to help my protective spells function better here in the Ice Vein? If we are to be able to help you at all, we will need to be protected from the cold here."
Savin Monday July 5th, 2004 10:58:18 PM
Savin waits patiently for a reply to his question understanding that the leader of the tribe is a busy man with much on his mind.
A Choice of Repayment (DM/Al) Monday July 5th, 2004 11:01:58 PM
A low chuckle, throaty and warm comes from the aged barbarian chieftain. His ice blue eyes fix on Savin. "What would you battle? All of Ice Vein itself." His laughter subsides, and he grows dour. His breath is slow and even, as though in patient consideration of the treacherous path across icy crags.
"We cannot give you better magic, little strong one," he says at last in reply to Ilsidur's question. "Maybe the gnomes can teach their magic. But they are far away, and we will spare no guides. But, we can give you the same coats we wear. And we can teach you the ways of Ice Vein. Maybe this will be enough."
Mekrenden's eye shift back to Savin. He leans closer, scrutinizing the monk's features more thoroughly. "It is you. Hunt leader Ragnar shared Warmth of Breath with you." He nods thoughtfully to himself, and then looks into the face of each of those present; the Children of Chaos.
"I will tell you more," he says finally. He looks directly at Niobe. "I will tell you of the Twin Tusk Tribe."
"The orcs from Twin Tusk raid our village. This has always been. We raid their village. This too has always been. But, this past storm season was very bad for us. The winds destroyed many tents. The winds destroyed the Food Cache. The Twin Tusks would take advantage of this. The Twin Tusk do not respect the balance of Ice Vein. We must rebuild before the storms. We cannot do both, fight them and rebuild. If we do, many will die. Balance will be destroyed. We will be destroyed."
"But now I will insult you. You who have shared Warmth of Breath with our hunt leader." The edges of the old man's hard blue eyes crinkle with the barest tinge of hesitance. "It is necessary. I must ask. You are not from here, so I must ask. Will you help us? Choose your way."
"If this is done, balance will turn. We must help you. It is the way things turn on the ice. Our children know this. You must know this now as well. Maybe we will help you find your mother. Maybe take you to the gnomes. Maybe something else. Ice Vein will know."
There is a disturbance from outside, a hand pulls aside the hide flap to the tent and the gray streaked hunt leader from yesterday enters. He walks straight to Mekrenden without a word. Though, today he has a smile for each of you. A smile that he did not have yesterday. Ragnar, kneels next to his chieftain, and they confer in whispers. Then he rises and remains.
"Another of your band has arrived. He comes even less prepared than you." The leader of the barbarian village shakes his head, and the expression on his face is one of incredulity mixed with annoyance. "He was very badly frost-burned when we found him. He is in Sweat Lodge now. You may see him soon. He and the one-who-changes-form, and the-little-one-who-is-not-a-gnome.
Sly and Luke Tuesday July 6th, 2004 12:25:10 AM
Sly is suprised at what the leader said, "Ilsidur! Savin! will you two go see who they are, The one who is not a Gnome must be Barnum, the one who changes must be Jurgen, but the third one I don't know him but if he has a tattoo on the back or in the palm of his hand, he will be one of us.
Then turns to the both Barbarians and tells them, "The Tribe must survive, I will help you with all the strenth and magic I have left in me, My companions will speak for them selves." Sly look dowm at Luke ask him "Do you want to help, Luke?"
Luke answers "Yes!"
Savin Tuesday July 6th, 2004 12:54:16 AM
Savin will reply to the chieftan, "Honored sir, yes your hunt leader Ragnar honored me with his breath. For that I am thankful. You have treated us with respect and honor. I will be glad to help you anyway I can.
I am willing to help you fight your foe and help you return to balance or if you judge it more wise, I will lend my arms and skills to help you rebuild.
I do ask that you teach me the skills I will need to survive in your harsh world. I didn't like to see my people suffer so."
Savin will bow and say, "I will travel to your sweatlodge with your permission and see to the health of the others."
If he doesn't get an objection, he will jog over to the sweatlodge and take a peek in.
Shiraz Tuesday July 6th, 2004 8:33:07 AM
ooc Sorry for missing Fridays post teh holiday weekend got me too. BTW I dont get on line on the weekends so I miss every sat post.
Shiraz listens to the man carefully and says little, angry at being chastised by a man who knows nothing of him or his people. Shiraz stands stoically, watching the elder and biding his time.
Peerimus and Yorrick Tuesday July 6th, 2004 9:57:24 AM
Peerimus and give a curt nod of his head after Sly's comments to help toward the leader. "We would be honored to help you and yours. While you rebuild we will defend the village."
Niobe Tuesday July 6th, 2004 7:19:44 PM
"Elder it is best for the People here to rebuild. I believe we would not really know how to build a home appropriate to this climate." The thief glances over at her companions with an impish grin on her lips, "I would hate to ruin your plans but I much rather prefer a less direct approach. I would love to tip the balance in our favor just a bit. I mean what goes around comes around, right?" Barely surpressing the glee of maybe having an opportunity to relieve the orcs of a few useful items she all but sits on her hands to keep from rubbing them together in a greedy-seeming fashion. "With any luck we could whittle their numbers down as well."
Trying to remain respectful she politely addresses the two barbarian men, "I would be very greatful if you and your people would teach us what we need to learn to survive here. I will happily lend you my aid in return."
Belatedly Niobe considers that these people just might have some grusome form of punishment for thieving. Nonchalantly she thinks to herself, 'no problem really, I can talk my way out of pretty much anything. Anyhow raiding is sort of just armed; and upfront, thieving.' She waits to hear what the men have to say about her input. She expects the responses to be at least a little interesting.
Ilsidur Tuesday July 6th, 2004 10:18:57 PM
Ilsidur calls back over his shoulder as he heads out the door, "Wherever the Children go, so do I. But I have to go and see to the others!"
He asks the barbarian at the doorway directions to the sweatlodge, throws his magical cloak over his shoulders, and hurries to find the others.
Reunions and Departures (DM/Al) Tuesday July 6th, 2004 11:51:33 PM
The aged chieftain listens to each of your words. He is silent and watches intently from below half lidded eyes.
When all finish speaking, he rises. His movements are slow, but steady; a movement powered by will as much as the strength of sinew and muscle. The hunt leader at his side does not move to help him.
"We will prepare you for Ice Vein. And then you will go to Twin Tusks. But for now, you must go to the others. Ragnar will show you."
The barbarian at the doorway does no more than stare at Ilsidur. There is curiosity in his eyes mixed with an even percentage of confusion. He returns the dwarf's questions with one of his own. The language is one that Ilsidur does not recognize. Fortunately, Mekrenden's parting words drift to the dwarven cleric and he returns for their guide.
Hunt leader Ragnar smiles at the collected group. "I am pleased to see you well today. It was a difficult march. I am surprised that you are as hale today as you are to my eye. Your magics must be strong." Oddly enough, the taciturn barbarian of the day before, seems much more talkative and outgoing today. "I am sorry to say that your friends are not so fortunate. Sweatlodge has healed their bodies well enough. But there is some sickness of the spirit that we know not how to heal. Come. I will take you to Sweatlodge."
The hunt leader takes you out of the chieftain's tent and through the maze of low built below-ground tents. He makes the trip in silence. Sweatlodge is easily identified. Though largely obscured by a many layered cathedral of ice, there is a fine mist of steam that fights it's way the few feet above the structure before succumbing to the cold and falling back to join it's brethren in solid form.
You enter through one of the airlock like tunnel-ways that insulate the interior of the tents from the outside cold. Passing through the second hide door, you enter a small dimly lit room barely big enough for all of you. The smell is pungent and earthy, both comforting and repellent at the same time. The air is moist, and a door on the far wall leaks steam. The effect is akin to a womb.
In the corner, a man sits with his back against the wall, knees pulled up, his head on his arms. In the shadows two figures lie upon the ground beside him.
"I will leave you now," the hunt leader says. "It is a time for oneness." And he withdraws through the hide door flap.
The man in the corner raises his head. It is Jurgen. One of the figures rises to it's feet and whimpers, Vus.
"It's you. It's really you. I couldn't get anyone to talk to me. No one that would speak common. Poor Barnum. He just lies there. And Edgar."
Jurgen rambles on. He seems not himself. "I thought you might have been ... " He puts his face in his hands, taking in a deep breath. It seems to calm him. At the end of the long breath, he rises and meets each of your eyes, as though greeting long lost friends. The smile returns to his lips and he seems almost himself again.
And then his eyes rise into the air. Jurgen looks first one way, and then another. "Did you hear that?" he asks. "There! Did you hear it that time? Vus whines. "Yes, Vus hears it." He stands in a pose of listening, occasionally nodding his head.
"I see now. Yes, I see now." And he turns to you again. "I am called back," he says. His eyes meet each of yours. Ilsidur, Savin, Shiraz, Niobe, Peerimus and Yorrick, Sly Foxx, Vus barks to Luke and Jurgen looks down at the still form of Barnum.
"I am called back, and I must leave you now. It's been short, but it's been sweet. May I see you again."
Jurgen kneels and puts a hand to the other form upon the ground in the outer room of the Sweatlodge. The dimensions of form suddenly multiply, three to twelve, a view unsuited for the human brain to resolve. Then, just as suddenly dimensions collapse, and Jurgen and Vus are taken by time and space.
The other figure on the ground beings to stir.
[[ OoC: Take it away, Darryl. BTW, you would not have your armor on. Maybe some clothing. Maybe. You've just been in the equivalent of a sauna. You have recovered from all subdual injury. Though there's nothing that says you wouldn't necessarily feel the effects of what you just went through if that is what you wish to roleplay. ]]
Sly and Luke Wednesday July 7th, 2004 8:01:54 AM
Sly enter the sweatloge, looks around, then spoting his old friend Jurgen. Sly kneel by him putting his arm around his friend shoulder and listens to every word. After Jurgen said that he has to go.
Sly repies "Yes! You are called to go back, You must go. Domi want you to be some place else. Go! and if you come accross the Iron Golem, tell him he is needed here in Ice Vain, Now go and be true to yourself."
Sly is on his feet and watches Jurgen and Vus go through the dememtion gates, Sly think to himself 'I hope these Barbarians has seen Jurgen's Magic, that would put a little bit of respect in their voice.'
Luke barks twice, "Bark! Bark Goodby!"
Sly now will stand beside Ilsidur and ask "Is this one alright? How about Barnum is he alright?".
Jason of Aisildur Wednesday July 7th, 2004 8:58:56 AM
Stirring on the ground, Jason rolls over and then slowly opens his eyes. After a moment it becomes apparent that he is confused by what he sees.
The big man quickly sits up, his deep blue eyes darting from person to person as he looks over the group who have entered the lodge.
"Who are you?" he asks to all and noone in particular. Not waiting for an answer the fit young man stands, but dressed only in his undergarments, he realizes his dignity might be copromised with such a move. He lowers himself to a sitting position.
"I am Jason." he announces. He then rises again, placing a hand near his midsection for privacy, he extends his other hand in greeting to anyone who will take it, his expression a mix of pleasantness and slight embarrassment.
Niobe d20+3=20 Wednesday July 7th, 2004 6:28:31 PM
Niobe enters the lodge a bit before Jason stirs. She stands off to the side with her arms crossed loosely over her chest. The good-looking, style-conscious female is none too pleased about having to wear bulky, shapeless winterclothing. It basically doesn't suit her image.
The thief can't help but look throughly amused at Jason's feeble attempts to 'keep his dignity'. Her cheeks have taken on a noticeable tinge of color as she tries to bite back an amused laugh. The corner of her mouth twitches as an inevitable quick, muffled chortle is heard.
With an amused grin Niobe will indeed shake hands with Jason. After all she isn't deliberately trying to be rude. She cannot really help finding it all just plain funny. The thief pointedly stares at his face as she greets him.
"So... Jason... poor dress-sense there." She glances downward for a moment, and then up again. Niobe raises an eye-brow in an inquiring manner. The Half-Elven woman is still grinning. "What brings you to the navel of the Wold?"
Not bothered one wit by Jason's state of being underdressed the thief lets go of his hand and steps away from the poor, embarrassed man and finally introduces herself. "Well met at any rate. I am Niobe uiCrevan. Thief and Ranger associated with this lot." She smiles a dazzling smile (Charisma 20) as she motions nonchalantly in the direction of the other Children of Chaos. "Collectively we are known as the Children of Chaos. Heard of us?" Niobe hopes Jason has a sense of humor and sees that she is just simply amused by the whole thing. If anything does go badly a little charm never hurts.
(Charisma 20)
((OOC: Welcome to Game 4 Darryl. Happy to have you with us. My name is Eunice and I am the Assistent DM. Something should befall both Justin and Al at the same time then I get to run the game until they return. (Be afraid, be very afraid. LOL!) And on a more serious note... if you have any questions just ask. If you need a sub if you get swamped with RL things just ask.))
Ilsidur d20+13=14 Wednesday July 7th, 2004 10:51:37 PM
Ilsidur moves over to Jurgen, on the other side of Sly. "You are called back, so soon? You have only just rejoined us! Please take care, and rejoin us when you can." He smiles as the young man and his dog leave once again.
Then the cleric hurries over to Barnum, trying to figure out what might be wrong. For Edgar to be out as well, clearly it is something serious. However, whatever the problem is, it is clearly beyond Ilsidur's comprehension. [OOC: Rolled a natural 1 for the heal check!]
Hoping that Barnum will be OK eventually, Ilsidur moves over to the newcomer. "Well met, I am Ilsidur Wayfinder, the healer and priest of this group. Tell us, how did you come to be here? What do you know of this place."
Suddenly, the dwarf realizes that he has neglected to take his morning devotions. "This place has certainly taken its toll," he thinks to himself as he moves off to a quiet corner to say his devotions. He will beseech the powers of the Wold to empower his spells to function in this part of the Wold.
Savin Wednesday July 7th, 2004 11:07:34 PM
Savin will look down at Barnum with concern on his face. He will reach down and feel for a pulse. He is reassured if he feels one and stands up and sticks his hand out to the newcomer.
"Hello my name is Savin. How did you get to these unhospitible parts?"
The Newcomer (DM/Al) Wednesday July 7th, 2004 11:51:13 PM
Jason of Aisildur sits with back to the hide wall dressed only in his underwear. Various introductions of varying levels of embarrassment offer the man his first waking moments since becoming incapacitated by the frigid cold of Ice Vein. (Spot vs. DC10 to see the pile of things that must be Jason's stacked against the opposite wall.)
Ilsidur examines Barnum. The halfling sorcerer lies with his hands folded over the body of Edgar. His face carries no traces of pain. And his complexion is a pink flush of health. Edgar as well, aside from his lack of movement seems no worse of than were he pining for the fjords. Wise as he is in the ways of healing, the cleric still cannot fathom the source of this malaise. It may be an effect of Ice Vein, but it is equally possible that it could be something else entirely. Jurgen, for instance, seemed to recover quite well from the cold. This new man on the floor as well.
Savin examines Barnum's pulse. Yes, he has one. And from what training in the healing arts that the monk possesses, the rate may even be normal for a halfling.
Al: Feel free to make several RP posts between DM posts, as you get to know Jason. As long as you don't leave the area.
Sly and Luke Thursday July 8th, 2004 2:51:15 AM
As the others greet this this Jason, Sly goes and pick up his clothes. when his turn come to greet this hardy man, he advances, smiles at jason but tell Niobe, "Now! Now! Niobe be nice." But to Jason, he shakes hands but does not let go, (Looking for a Tattoo) "Welcome, Jason is it? I'm Sly Foxx and this dog here is Luke, my companion is a speical dog as you'll see. I'm an half elf, a wizard and a fighter. I'm here on a quest of my own and these assorted people here are the best bounch of friends a man can ever know. Now what bring you here to Ice Vain?" As Sly gives the man his bundle of clothes.
To Sly look to Luke "Luke greet Jason here." Luke answers "Hello" then extends his paw.
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+9=18 Thursday July 8th, 2004 9:09:16 AM
Peerimus clasps Jurgen's hand tightly. "Fare journey my friend. Your family will always be here when you can join us."
Peerimus keeps his good byes breif as Barnum is in dire need as is his raven. "Perhaps I may assist?" He poses the question as he steps beside Ilsidur to help. [Heal 18] "I believe they will both recover well, but I can watch over them to make sure."
Peerimus stands again as the stranger introduces himself and cocks his head curiously to one side as he looks him over. With a short nod in his direction "I am Peerimus, welcome to Ice Vein and the Village of the Smashed Teeth."
Peerimus returns his attention to Barnum. Yorrick moves slowly in to give the new man a sniff. After all, Little Luke seems to think he alright.
Jason of Aisildur d20+2=8 Thursday July 8th, 2004 11:13:40 AM
(Spot DC10 check = 8)
Jason amidst all the introductions, looks about for his clothes. The highly unusual introduction with this talking dog seems to distracts him, and he is unable to find his attire and belongings.
Deciding he better answer a few of the questions he is asked, the young warrior settles back down on a fur, and begins.
"As I said, my name is Jason, and I am originally from Aisildur. My life is dedicated to following the path set out for me by the god Domi. I am searching for my adopted parents, whom were kidnapped and brought to a 'Southern Land'..." The young man looks about for his clothing, but is still unable to find it.
"...My search began in the hills near Windhorn Hamlet, where I was raised, and then to a hermit named Unos." Jason suddenly stops,
"I am sure I am boring you with the details. My searching eventually landed me, unexpectedly in this frozen land. Unprepared for such cold, I seem to have been overcome by it, and now you find me in this village."
Jason stops then, but continues to look about for his clothes and belongings.
Sly and Luke Thursday July 8th, 2004 12:41:12 PM
Sly smiles at this very excited human, does not seem to see the bundle in Sly's hand. Sly ask him "This bundle of clothing is not yours?"
Luke sits next to Sly's side "Another like Vus!"
Jason of Aisildur Thursday July 8th, 2004 12:51:14 PM
Jason looks to the one named Sly Foxx as he speaks of his clothes. Looking at the garments in the man's hands, Jason reaches for them,
"Can you tell me where you found these. The rest of my belongings --" at that moment, in reaching for the clothes, Jason notices a strange marking, like a tattoo, upon the back of his hand.
"By the love of Domi...what is that?" he questions. Now even more confused the humbled warrior slips on his pants and shirt, then ties his royal blue cloak about his neck, all the while looking back at the dorsum of his hand again and again.
Niobe Thursday July 8th, 2004 3:14:46 PM
Niobe looks at Sly and grins. "I was being nice. I could have really put poor Jason on the spot had he even bothered to notice that I happen to be female. Of course he could be ignoring that fact."
Almost immediately after Jason asks about the marking on his hand Niobe comes with another quick remark. "It is a tattoo," Niobe answers very impishly and smirks. "I don't think even I have had it explained in detail." Niobe answers far more sedately and holds up her left hand; palm facing Jason. "I think we all have one. Anyone care to elaborate on the history of these?"
Savin Thursday July 8th, 2004 3:29:48 PM
Savin will step forward and show the tattoos on his arm as well. "Welcome Jason, It looks like you were meant to join us. The tattoo names you a Child of Chaos. It is both a curse and a blessing.
It is a curse because they seem to drive us onward always testing us and putting us in unusual and life threatening situations. It is almost like we are pawns in some cosmic chess game, being pushed around the board, testing our limits.
It is a blessing because you have become a Child of Chaos and have entered a very select group. We look out for each other, trust each other, and generally try to aid the world from evil. I hope you like it here and with us. It seems you are fated to travel with us for a time. Your life will be very interesting from now on."
Shiraz Thursday July 8th, 2004 4:26:16 PM
Shiraz walks carefully into the sweatlodge. Seeing young jurgen in pain the taur rushes to his friends side to comfort him just as he disappears, "BY IMOD'S HAMMER!!" Shiraz thunders, "I am tired of seeing my friends come and go at the whim of ..." Shiraz stops as he hears Jason and looks around. Shiraz walks over to the shaken young man, "Are you ok?" Shiraz asks with concern.
Jason of Aisildur Thursday July 8th, 2004 7:02:45 PM
Jason looks into the eyes of the minotaur. It is strange that he detects no evil in this beast's gaze.
"I am fine...thank you." he says. A most unusual, but seemingly friendly group of...individuals, jason thinks to himself. He then turns to Niobe.
"I ignore nothing, including your obvious comeliness." Jason says to her, smiling briefly, "Some of us, however, answer to a higher calling." he finishes. He then looks at his tattoo again.
"A Child of Chaos. Then the dream was not just a dream." he finishes. The young Paladin's mind is spinning with the new situation he finds himself in. Drawing up his courage, Jason turns to Savin.
"If Domi wishes it, than I pledge to you my undieing allegance...", then to each in the room, "...to all of you."
Jason and Wonderland (DM/Al) Thursday July 8th, 2004 11:35:46 PM
Jason of Aisildur wakes up next to a halfling with a bird in his arms. In the next few minutes he meets dwarves, talking dogs, beautiful women, men with a bears, and minotaurs. (Well, actually, only one of each.) And, in that same moment, he finds that the powers of the Wold have linked him inexorably to these people, that he is not alone in this strange and inhospitable land.
But why here? Are they sent by Domi to help him? One mentions a quest. And where is the rest of his stuff!
The anteroom to the Sweatlodge is dim. And with the full company within, it is crowded, but, in it's own way, cozy. Outside, even amongst the tight network of closely built tents, the Children of Chaos know the cold awaits. They are safe, comfortable, and even more than that, at this moment, they are together and they are alone. Now may be the time to take stock and discuss what they really want to do next.
Ilsidur Thursday July 8th, 2004 11:53:57 PM
"The tatoos more than mark us, they contain some sort of power, or link to that power. When we are in our direst straights, we can sometimes invoke the power of Chaos through these tatoos by concentrating on them. The power certainly aided us when we were fighting the red dragon."
"We are here searching for Sly Foxx's family. He was told that his village was taken by slavers, and somehow moved into the Ice Vein. Now we have thrown our lot in with these barbarians, hoping that they can provide some insight into where Sly's family might be located. It appears that we are to do something against a bunch of orcs, although exactly what, I am not sure. So, what are your talents?"
Sly and Luke Friday July 9th, 2004 7:57:46 AM
As Jason takes his clothes from him, Sly smiles when he see the tattoo. After Ilsidur finishes his story of how we got here, Sly will add to it. "Ah! Yes! Ilsidur, now what do we have here a cleric, who can fight or a Paladin? We have not had Paladin since Sir Thomas Who left us in Hook City.
Yes we came here because a traveling elven hermit I knew when I was a young adult. We met again in Gateway Downs out side a city. He said that he thought he saw my mother, in slaved some where in Ice Vain. I follow the trail into this Cold land, we found that we had thought we prepaired for cold weather, but found we were still in a disavantage.
We must learn on how to exest in this land, We must learn about their magic, right now this cold drains our magic. These Barbarians have a big problem, if we can help them with this little thing. They will teach us their way of survival.
Which my friend we need to learn. They have magic in there clothes, in their tents, It's all around them. When we have learn enough to survive, then we will help these good people. They may laugh at us, and we do look very odd to them, but they DID save us."
Jason of Aisildur Friday July 9th, 2004 8:47:12 AM
Jason, trying to remain polite as always, struggles now, as he is overwhelmingly distracted with finding his things.
"I must find my sword, shield, and armor." he says. He searchs the room from top to bottom, hoping to find the rest of his items.
While he hunts, he talks with his new comrades.
"My parents were supposedly kidnapped and taken very far south. It may be coincidence, but these slavers you search for may have also taken my parents, or may at least hold a clue as to their whereabouts." he states. Lifting up furs and hides, he continues his search.
"I am a a knight of Domi sir..." he says, turning to Sly, "My duty to him is split amongst a worship of him, and acting in his image." He then looks over to the other man who was left with him.
"I know nothing of this man, who you all seem to know, only that I awoke with him by my side." Jason finishes. The paladin then merely continues to search the sweatlodge for his things.
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+9=20 Friday July 9th, 2004 3:13:41 PM
Peerimus continues to tend to Barnum, removing Edgar from his grasp to more easily examine him as well. [Heal 20]
Niobe Friday July 9th, 2004 4:34:43 PM
"Hmm, deep devotion to a God... can't beat that," Niobe muses. She watches Jason hunt for the rest of his gear. "The village elders probably have your gear. When we get a chance to speak with them again you could ask." Niobe now is speaking in a matter-of-fact type tone. Jokingly she adds, "I can't take credit for making off with your stuff since I have no where to hide it!" She laughs. The thief knows for sure that if Jason could see what she normally wears he would have to agree with her quip! "Call me silly but it seems that metal armor harms more than it helps out here. You might not want that back..." Once again the mischievous thief grins.
"Peerimus, how are Barnum and Edgar doing? They seem to be worst off now then they were on the way here."
Peerimus and Yorrick Friday July 9th, 2004 5:31:41 PM
Peerimus stands and turns to the others. "We have done all we can. I would guess Barnum's mind is rebelling to where his body brought him. Our comfortable halfling friend went without such things for too long and now his mind has retreated to happier places. His mystic connection to Edgar I believe carried the brave avian with him. I have made him comfortable and will pray for his guidance in this quest of self and that is all any of us can do." Peerimus then leans in close to Barnum and Edgars ears and whispers softly before touching each on the forehead.
He straightens and turns to the group at large. "Before we remove the orc infestation we need to learn more of the balance between these two tribes. There well may be something the orcs supply these men through raid that allows their continued survival. I do believe we should defend this place against any attack and allow them to rebuild. Knowing our spells are sapped by the land I can compensate by praying for more endurance spells and enhancing thier duration. We shall not have to go through our initial forray again friends."
Savin Friday July 9th, 2004 6:18:49 PM
Savin notices the conversation going on around him but chooses not to participate. He sits down on the ground and starts to do some stretches.
He will keep a close eye on the conversation however and hand up a boot of Jason's he was sitting on.
Raid! (DM/Al) Friday July 9th, 2004 10:00:33 PM
The wise dwarf relates more of the history of The Children. Sly Foxx continues the story. Niobe mixes mischief with compassion. And Peerimus speculates as to the source and depth of Barnum's state of unconsciousness. Savin offer's Jason his boot back. And Jason, moving about the dark and crowded room, at long last finds his gear.
Suddenly, a muffled shout is heard from outside. The sound of the outer flap, violently shoved aside. Then the hunt leader Ragnar bulls through the inner flap. He has two large fur coats in his hands. One, he throws, without hesitation at Shiraz. His eyes search the gloom. The-man-who-changes is no longer there. But, the other one is awake. The other coat comes in Jason's direction.
"The Twin Tusks attack! Come! It is a raid!"
The hunt leader does not wait. He charges out both inner and outer flaps. Outside, the sun is still climbing from the horizon; morning raid. From the opposite side of a small cluster of huts, you hear the sounds of combat. Weapons sound on weapons. The crunch of yielding flesh. Orcish grunts. But not a human word is spoken.
Jason of Aisildur Friday July 9th, 2004 11:15:28 PM
Jason catches the coat. Quickly he puts on his chain mail, then the coat. He finds his amulet and ring, dawning both, then grabs his sword and shield and follows the Barbarian out the tent door. As he pulls open the flap, he looks skyward, and says firmly,
"Great Lord of Courage, your will be done this day." Jason then exits the tent, and enters the battlefield.

Shiraz Saturday July 10th, 2004 4:04:17 AM
Shiraz smiles grimly as the hunt leader bellows out, dashing through the inner and outer doors Shiraz steps out into the sunshine and commands his shield to animate with a single tauric word. Drawing his weapons the minotaur turns to continue after the hunt leader.
Sly and Luke Saturday July 10th, 2004 7:40:50 AM
Sly check his sword (to make sure that his spell is still in his special sword). "Luke stay here and watch Barnibus and Edgar, make sure that nothing happens to them."
Luke replies "Ah! Gee! Alright." the dog don't like it. but will stay.
Sly is out the entrance, rushing to the sound of battle. Yelling at up comming enermy "GET TO Know DOMI! COME CHILDREN OF CHAOS!" with sword and shield ready.
Peerimus and Yorrick Saturday July 10th, 2004 2:32:02 PM
Peerimus casts Endure Cold and shares teh spell with Yorrick. Both are then on the heels of Shiraz. To the powerful fighter he follows, "Yorrick and I are going to become great bears and will look to flank your opponents." It seems there is the glint of anticipation in Peerimus's eye as he is about to do something new.
Niobe (HP 67/67, AC 19) d20+9=17 d20+10=16 Saturday July 10th, 2004 3:16:06 PM
Niobe does a cursory check of her clothing, gear and weaponry before leaving the sweat-lodge. Just before completely exiting the lodge she draws her rapier. She takes an overview of the situation to see where she can make the best use of herself. She hopes they can resolve this quikly before too much more damage is done to the village. 'Lucky us, they took the battle to us and saved us the trip! I wonder what the orcs are after anyway?' The thief thinks to herself.

Ilsidur Sunday July 11th, 2004 7:13:01 PM
Ilsidur quickly dons his armour and his shield, and runs out the door, waraxe in hand. He can't help being worried about how events seem to have been taken out of the Childrens' hands. Although he is fairly certain that the only good orc is a dead orc.

Ragnar tears out of the Sweatlodge tent, The Children of Chaos behind. The sounds of weapon on weapon come from nearby, northwest over the low tents.
Then, with the turn of a corner, the panorama opens out. The edge of the village, and white snow and ice is splashed with fire and blood.
The two tents edges of the two tents to either side are afire. No doubt splashed with oil and set ablaze. Straight ahead two barbarians, the young one from the hunting party and one other stand fighting for their lives against a semi-circle of six. A seventh stands nearby, chanting, a wooden symbol grasped in a gloved hand.
The weapons that all wield do not appear to be made of metal. Rather, they seem to be leather wrapped bone or ivory. Jawbones of some giant marine mammal, perhaps.
A orc strikes at the unknown hunter. "Progarman!" Ragnar whispers hoarsely, breaking the protocol of breath's warmth. But the hunter's weapon rises to meet the descending blade, and, with a clack that cuts the freezing air, the blow is deflected to the side.
Already covered in his own blood, young barbarian is not so lucky. An orc swings, and he manages to lean to the side, avoiding the blow. But from the other side another orc swings, and with a meaty thud, the bone Great Axe cleaves into the young barbarian's hip. The largest orc, a hunt leader, without doubt, steps casually forward, and with an upward swing of his bone axe, sends the young barbarian to the ice and snow.
SULIX!!! Ragnar bellows and veins begin to bulge from his forehead. Another incoherent roar, and the hunt leader charges across the wastes directly at the large orc.

Savin races across the frozen ground. With a target in focus, he puts the forward orc hunter out of mind, a calculated bet, which he loses. The orc's bone axe catches the monk as he passes, and the Child of Chaos leaves blood in the snow. (Hit AC28 for 10hp).
Peerimus and Yorrick cross behind the monk as they charge across the space separating them from their foe. Fortune rides this one's back today, as a normally injurious blow from the great bear glances off his leather armor.
The minotaur is a daunting sight as he moves across toward the semi-circle of orcs. Even more so, when Shiraz deals one of their number a mighty blow.
Sly Foxx rushes into the midst of battle. "YOU WANT CHAOS, WE GIVE YOU CHAOS!" he shouts at the two orcs he threatens.
Jason too shouts a warning. The orcs turn heads as one of their opponents speaks in their tongue.
Ilsidur rushes to the side of the fallen Sulix. The young barbarian lies bleeding at his feet.
The orc Cleric moves five feet away from the attacking monk.
Seeing the dwarf approach the fallen barbarian, the westernmost orc (O1) opens it's mouth in a grin of pure evil. His bone axe rises and falls with a meaty thud. The blow is awkward, but the results undeniable. (Hit AC13, dmg 18)

Orc Raid - Retreat (DM/Al) d20+10=22 Thursday July 15th, 2004 12:06:31 AM
Savin follows the orc cleric, shifting five feet to his left. A shuffle of footwork pops into a dragon quick strike and a one-two-three combination of hands that can barely be seen. The cleric is rocked to the core, but shakes it off. (Fort 22)
Ilsidur kneels by the fallen barbarian. He might have been alive before that last stroke. But, if he was, he certainly is not now. Blood cakes the juncture between shoulder and neck. The young man is very very dead.
Sly Foxx spits into an orc's face. Then he spins arms like a windmill, cutting deeply twice into the body of his foe. The blows are staggering, but the orc still stands. (#O2)
Shiraz chants in his native tongue, lifting voice upon the frozen air. Double weapons, held in massive arms piston in and out in deadly rhythm. After the second blow, the orc drops, (O5 Down) and the Minotaur swings smoothly to the left to rip through the bowels of the adjacent orc. (O4)
Peerimus turns into a great bear, and Yorrick, upon instruction, easily finishes the job Shiraz had started (O4 Down)
With righteous indignation, Jason, attacks in the other direction, engaging the orc who struck the prone and dying barbarian, cuting a solid and bloody track through meat, bone, and leather.
The Orc hunt leader grunts with surprise as he realizes that in a blink of an eye, they had gone from surrounding to surrounded. Two down, out numbered, badly wounded, and what's more, purpose fulfilled, the canny hunt leader roars a command. BRASH NOOPF! (Trans: Retreat) In an instant, they drop their attacks and withdraw across the snowy ground to the west. (Savin gets one AoO vs O1, otherwise, no AoO on a Withdraw).
The tents still burn, popping and hissing in the icy air.
Throughout the battle, the only voices had been those of the Children. And now the only sounds are those of ragged breathing and crackling flame.

((OOC: Sorry for missing posts work has kept me away from the computer.))
Niobe leaves these orcs to the others she looks for something that can be used to help put out the fires instead. Maybe they can shovel snow on the burning tents to put out the fires?? With any luck she should find something useful.

Sly is still in th heat of the battle and ready to chase them, When he hears Niobe shout about about burning tents. As he turns ,he hears the voices of the children. He sheets his sword at the same time tell the defending party "Healers attend to the wounded, while the rest of us puts out the fire!" Sly is on the run.
As he nears the burning tents, Sly will use his shield as a shovel to throw snow on the tents, asking the magic users "Does any body have a Water Spell? Any thing to stop the spead of the fire?"
Luke now sences that Sly is in trouble again, and really want to go to him. But cannot he has to stay with Barnum.

OOC Savin does have improved grapple feat. I rolled a touch attack to initiate the grapple. Hit up to 22 ac. Then I rolled a grapple check and got a 32. Savin being a monk, gets his normal damage and I am choosing to do non-lethal damage as I want a prisoner.
Savin yells out, "Mac, help me out! Lets get a prisoner for questioning!"

Orc Raid - Aftermath (DM/Al) d20+3=19 Thursday July 15th, 2004 10:58:24 PM
Savin quite easily brings the orc down as it attempts to run by. He simply grabs its hand as it goes by. The monk uses the orc's momentum, and a graceful twist to lead it into a circle. The appropriate pressure, allows the orc no other path save the one chosen by the monk; face first, into the frozen ground. With a single hand, he controls the orc.
Jason follows and places the point of his sword at the back of the orc's neck.
Peerimus and Yorrick both charge after the rest of the retreating orcs. Hunt leader Ragnar, in a blind rage, runs after them as well. These orcs, however, all seem to have barbarian blood in their veins. In their retreat, they match the speed of the hunt leader and the charging bears. (Fleeing orcs travel 80 feet as well.) For the briefest of moments, the hunt leader, seizes in mid-stride. Then he shakes off, Ilsidur's spell and runs on. (Will save 19)
Niobe sees nothing about that that could be used to shovel with. She does note, however, the skins of oil used to start the fire in the first place. There is oil at the base of these flames! She watches Sly Foxx as he uses his shield to scoop up large piles of snow. Niobe notes that where snow is dumped thinly, it melts, and carries the flaming oil to other parts of the tent. Where Sly drops large piles of snow, the fire tends to smother and die from want of air.
The hitherto unknown hunter, Progarman drops to his knees beside the young barbarian. He lifts the young man's head into his lap. Progarman's eyes cloud with despair as he sees the terrible gaping wound. Blood drenches the snow. He looks up at the dwarf, and sees the eyes of a healer. In those eyes he also sees the sorrow of the final passing.
The hunter stands. Dark intent shades his face. In two hands he grips the long bone Great Axe. He turns to the lone orc captive, pinned to the ground by the monk and the paladin. Progarman has murder in his eyes.

Not willing to pursue the orcs to folly, though quite sure his stamina and that of Yorrick is a match for the orcs Peerimus pulls up and raises both arms issuing forth one final bellow and one final present. Centered on the orc leader a pillar of white blue flame 40' high and 20' across erupts.
Peerimus and Yorrick then head back to lend assistance where they can.

Niobe d20+4=22 d20+2=9 Friday July 16th, 2004 5:58:39 AM
Niobe quickly draws her rapier and uses it to pick up the oil soaked rags and flick them away from the tents and on to the snow. "It is going to take a lot of snow to quell the flames Sly. If piled too thinly the water from the melted snow causes the oil to spread further along the tent adding more fuel to the flames." Niobe will take a chance and do her best to remove what there is of outer coverings from the tents (at least the ones not already burning!), this way the flames will not have so much to spread to; she hopes. If necessary she will try to cut the coverings away.

Sly keep on shoveling as fast as he can, "Somebody see if the children are out of the burning tents!" Sly keep shoveling as fast as he can.
Luke digs in the hard clean snow so not to start another fire. But when Sly ask about the children, he runs towards the burning tents barking all the way.

In a desperate gambit, Jason throws his own weapon to the side, and well out of the reach of the orc. Then he interposes his own body between the barbarian and his intended orc victim.

Orc Raid - Victories and Mistakes (DM/Al) d20+5=13 d20+2=6 d20+4=7 d20+4=7 d20+6=11 Friday July 16th, 2004 11:49:21 PM
Niobe, Sly, and Shiraz work together and soon manage to douse the fires that burn at the wolf hide tents. The tents seem composed of many layers of both hide and ice. And, though smoking and blackened, the tents appear intact; still closed to the frigid cold of Ice Vein. The actions of the Children of Chaos have saved the tents from any major damage.
Peerimus calls a column of fire and the four fleeing orcs are bathed in incandescent light. When the flame of heaven lifts, called back into the sky, charred and smoking bodies remain. Savin draws a light crossbow and swings in the direction of the fleeing orcs. Aiming down the sight, however, he sees that it's all over. All over, except ...
Peerimus and Savin watch as the steam clears and lone figure stands among the wreckage. It is the hunt leader Ragnar. In pursuit of the orcs he too was caught up in the blast. Smoke rises from his body, and bits of burning clothing fall from him and drop to the ground with a hiss. The hunt leader, with complete disregard for his condition, turns from the area of devastation, leaving the bodies of the orcs behind. The hair of his head and face now burnt and gone, the only expression left to him, comes from his eyes. His eyes glitter like hard chips of ice.
Meanwhile, thoroughly involved in keeping their captive from death, Jason places himself, a human shield, between the approaching hunter and the captive orc.
"Talk outlander," the hunter says in a low voice cold as Ice Vein itself. "Talk, I will listen. And then I will kill that one." And he thrusts the head of the bone axe at the orc lying on the frozen ground.
Jason of Aisildur d20+14=16 Saturday July 17th, 2004 9:51:34 AM
(ooc: Glad to be back, but based on my first diplomacy roll, i don't know)
Jason watches the big barbarian move towards him.
"Please cease your hostility." Jason begins. The paladin can tell that his words are having little effect on the enraged iceborne fighter (Diplomacy Check=16). Knowing words are not likely going to help, the paladin does what he must, honor permitting no other course.
"I must insist that you let this defenseless prisoner of ours go unharmed. At the very least, allow us to question it, and then let it take up arms and engage you in a final combat." Jason remains between the two, knowing it may cost him his life, or the good will of the barbarians, but also knowing it is the good and just thing to do.
Sly and Luke Saturday July 17th, 2004 11:50:51 AM
After Sly sees that the fire is out, tells Niobe and Shiraz "The fire is out but damaged on the top means we will have to hunt for more hides."
Sly will go back to where the captive orc is on his knees. To Paladin Jason sly tells him "Jason, ask your question quickly. Although I don't think you"ll get very far as for infomation. Orcs rather die that tell give out infomation. Besides he is mark for death for setting the childrens tenth on fire."
To Ragar, Sly tells him, "We did a good job here today, the only ones that got away was the leader, and I think we'll hear from him soon. And that cleric, did anybody see where he went??"
Shiraz AC 26 hps84/84 Sunday July 18th, 2004 3:27:57 PM
Shiraz calls for his shield to resume its place and strides over to where the paladin and hunt leader are. "Even though I would want the same as you, revenge, justice. It is wrong to kill this orc like this. Get your information then use him to send a message. You sparing his life is justice, and more importantly is the right thing to do."

Peerimus and Yorrick wait for Ragnar and return to the encampment with him. Along the way, Peerimus will cast Cure Moderate Wounds on him. [healed for 19].
Upon arrival at the camp he will resume human form and stand quietly off to the side, but ready to stand in defense of his friends if the need arises.
Ilsidur Sunday July 18th, 2004 11:59:59 PM
Ilsidur moves up beside Jason, and says to the hunt leader, "Please hold your axe. It may be possible that Sulix's spirit has not strayed too far from his body, and I can try to recover it. Would you give me leave to try?"
He looks over his shoulder at Ragnar, trying to figure out how badly hurt the barbarian is. He will call to Ragnar, "If you can move this way, I can heal you of the burns."
Niobe Monday July 19th, 2004 3:51:20 AM
Niobe takes the opportunity to study how the tents are constructed. She has certainly never seen anything built like that. She will leave the captured orc's fate to the others, since she agrees with the barbarian about ending it's days quickly; after questioning it of course. She walks over to the men after a bit of studying the tents and asks them, "so what do we want to hunt first? Orcs or wolves?" The thief pauses before adding a few personal opinions, "I am thinking that we might want to get started on one task or another as soon as we can. After all time isn't a luxury that we really have in my opinion." Niobe doesn't want the people going without proper shelter for longer than necessary, and also it is best to strike at the orcs before they return again rather than when they return again. Naturally there is also the real reason they came here lurking in her mind. Sly's family; if they are still living, need rescuing and they shouldn't be wasting time standing around and discussing ethics.
Savin 66/76 hp (NPC'd by Al) d20+3=21 Monday July 19th, 2004 8:05:38 PM
Savin lowers the crossbow as he sees hunt leader, Ragnar, burnt and smoking, returning from the site of the orc party's destruction. He watches the barbarian's face to see what effect this will have on his next actions.
[[ Sense Motive 21 ]]
Justin Webber (DM) After battle Monday July 19th, 2004 10:37:32 PM
Progarman looks to Jason and the others standing before him and spits his words out, not in anger at them but telling them more of their ways, "Survival of the fittest, the orcs will get the message soon enough. Get him to speak and be quick before my axe drinks of his blood." Progarman crosses his arms and waits while holding his bone axe, his powerful arms flexing and ready, "You wish to learn our ways and this is it. Letting him live is not allowable."
Other barbarians in the village have began to wonder around and look more at the damage. Some mumbling about the work needed to repair them farther. Others stand and watch the group carefully, giving you all the full awareness that you are strangers here and not accustomed to the ways these people have lived by for many many years.
Hunt leader Ragnar nods a slight thanks to Peerimus but heads straight for the lone orc the group has captured and nods as he cetches the end of the barbarian's comment, "He is right and this is our way for many generation. This way has worked for us and will continue to work for us. We would not begin to come into your own land and tell you how to work your ways that you have set for so many years." Ragnar hears Ilsidur's comment and shakes his head, "He is gone, the rite of passing must be performed now and his soul sent to where all great warriors who die in honorable combat goes."
Sly and Luke Tuesday July 20th, 2004 5:16:18 AM
Sly shakes his head, He speak aloud so everybody can hear him, "Progarman is right! We, who are strangers, want to learn their ways so we can survive in this harsh land. We may not like their ways, But IT works for them.
Now my friends, this is the way I see it. If we agree and learn their way, we live to compleat our goal. If we don't agree and refuse to learn their ways, we have to go back to Gateway Downs. I myself will remain here, learn everything I can. Untill I know for sure that my Mother is here or she is not here. You, my friends must make your own choice."
Sly speaks to Ragnar "Do you want to kill the Orc? or May I have the pleasure?" Sly still has a good grip on his sword.
Jason of Aisildur Tuesday July 20th, 2004 7:54:58 AM
Jason nods politely to Progarman, then as well to Ragnar.
"I meant no disrespect to either of you, or any in your village. I know you are all honorable warriors, and would allow the orc to defend himself before death anyway. I apologize for suggesting what you obviously intended from the start." Jason then steps away from the orc, hoping his plea to their sense of honor works. He allows those who have to question the beast the time to do so. While they do, the Paladin turns back to Ragnar, and says to the man.
"I do not have any ordinary weapon to give the orc to defend itself, have you a knife or dagger." he asks.
Shiraz Tuesday July 20th, 2004 8:56:40 AM
Shiraz looks at the barbarian exhaling slowly, "Disrespect was not intended, nor were we questioning your motives, if it is the law that he die then here, let me step out of the way. But you would question the why of things too if you were in our lands trying to survive."
Peerimus and Yorrick Tuesday July 20th, 2004 3:33:45 PM
Peerimus heads back inside and out of the cold. Soon they would be on the move again and he wished to be within protection for as long as possible but he calls over his shoulder, "Jason, You know the language. Ask about his knowledge on slaves or slavers here. It might save his life for if he can lead us we will take him with us."
Peerimus then moves inside with Yorrick.
Jason of Aisildur Tuesday July 20th, 2004 6:46:48 PM
Jason nods, then on thinking for a second, turns to Peerimus, and asks him quietly,
"My honor will not permit the telling of untruths. We agreed to let the barbarians have this beast once we are done questioning him. If you mean to take him with us, then I will tell him so, but I think the barbarians may not approve." he states. The paladin waits for Peerimus to tell him to proceed or hold until he negotiates with the barbarians further.
Savin 66/76 hp (NPC'd by Al) Tuesday July 20th, 2004 8:43:51 PM
"Jason, new friend and comrade," Savin says while studying the orc. "Ask it where it came from, and if there are others. This can't be all of them, and it may be useful to know if there are more about."
"Niobe, do you think you could track them back from where they came? If we can't get answers from this one, we may have to settle for that."
Peerimus and Yorrick Tuesday July 20th, 2004 9:18:28 PM
Yorrick continues inside as Peerimus turns to talk more with Jason. "You may not be lying to it. Until the creature is communicated with we do not know. We can not allow this chance to learn of Sly's family go. You need to ask it, not bargain with it. But if it does know, then we may bargain with the locals. Until then there is no need."
Peerimus leaves Yorrick inside but as he started this new direction he returns to where the captive lies on the snow with Jason.
Jason of Aisildur Tuesday July 20th, 2004 10:12:49 PM
Jason listens to both Savin and Peerimus. He nods after Peerimus speaks with him. Looking to the heavens, he whispers,
"Guide my actions oh Lord of Courage." he recites. Jason then leans back toward the captive orc, and in his best orcish, says to the creature,
"If you wish to live, you will tell me where you came from, and what others are with you in your group?" he then pauses for a moment, then with a look of mixed emotions, says to the orc,
"I also would have you tell me anything and everything you know of slavers or slaves in these parts." his face now more confident, "Tell me what I need to know, and you may live. Do not tell me, and for certain you will die." he finishes. He then stands above the creature and awaits its answer.
Justin Webber (DM) Questioning Tuesday July 20th, 2004 10:27:04 PM
The orc looks stubborn at first and sits glaring at Jason. It quickly begins to spill what it knows though when it sees Progarman begin to move towards it. Progarman does stop once the orc quickly speaks.
Orc, "We was advance scout party. We come to judge strength and to do more damage before main attack....slaves come here all time....brought by many men who capture...some work for they say a large black creature...spews strange liquid death that eat flesh, bone, tree, grass...everything." The orc growls lightly now and glares at Jason, "No trust human....you kill anyway...tell nothing of other orcs or even if there is a camp. Show your true self and do it now. orc tell you no more...no more...you and village will pay."
Ilsidur Tuesday July 20th, 2004 10:49:04 PM
Ilsidur listens to what the orc has to say (being fluent in orc as well), and turns to the rest of the party, saying, "This is an advanced scout group, and apparently more of these orcs are coming this way. We need to get our own scouts out there looking for the rest of the attack party. And he says that there are slavers in the area, that apparently work for a black dragon. Maybe if we help this village fight off the main attack, then they can help us find the slavers."
Niobe Wednesday July 21st, 2004 12:18:14 AM
Niobe shrugs, "I will certainly be happy to try and track them. Of course we might want to discuss any plans we have with the natives first?" She hopes that they won't be standing around outside for much longer now.
Sly and Luke Wednesday July 21st, 2004 4:10:37 AM
Sly almost freezes to the spot, he turn his back to the barbarians for a few sceonds, scratches his beard(which as not grown in yet). Sly turns back to face Progarman and Ragnar, raises a hand in a peace sign, "Friends! You have more trouble than you realise right now!. This Orc has just told us that they were just a scouting party, come here to see how strong you are...
There are to report to the main group, Some where out there. Some time soon they will decend on you, and take this village into slavery, like they did to my village. There's more problems...
These Orc have a master... And it's a Black Dragon, a evil acid spiting Black Dragon. Belive me Sir! Your hide armor will not help you. Right now you have to plan on what you have to do to off set this comming invation."
Sly puts his sword away, and tell the rest of his pasty "I cannot kill this Orc, he hinted that he has some knowlaged where the slaves we are looking for. Let our friends here do what they have to do. Remember the Orc is a enermy in time of war."
Jason of Aisildur Wednesday July 21st, 2004 7:58:03 AM
Jason listens to Ilsidur, Niobe, and Sly.
"I cannot stand by and watch him executed. Domi prefers violence only when needed, and certainly he would frown on the orc being killed without a chance in battle." He takes a moment, then reluctantly, conceeds,
"You are right though Sly. This is a time of war, and I am a guest in this village. My honor is first to those of goodness, and in this case that is the barbarians.", turning to Ragnar,
"Do as you wish with him." he says, then grabs the orc by the neck, and tosses him toward the man. Jason then turns to his new companions,
"If we are to encounter the dragon, and what a glorious battle it would be if it should come to that, then we must prepare." he looks down at his armor, "Even armor of steel will not hold up long against the vile green spue of such a creature." he finishes.
Jason then proceeds to locate any oil about, keeping it to place on his armor before a battle with the dragon. Should the beast blast him, perhaps the liquid would eat away at the oil first.
Savin 66/76 hp (NPC'd by Al) Wednesday July 21st, 2004 8:32:37 AM
"You're right, Niobe. I think we may need to see their leader again."
"That shows wisdom and flexibility," Savin says, placing a hand on the shoulder of the latest Child of Chaos. "Though, come inside. We've found that armor like that can work against you in this cold, and I need to bind these wounds."

Shiraz walks into the tent to warm up while waiting on his friends.
Justin Webber (DM) Leader talking and removal of orc Wednesday July 21st, 2004 8:23:57 PM
Ragnar nods at the comments made to them of a larger attack coming and comments before going silent and making a quick gesture to Progarman, "We figured as much. Are leader will surely speak to you soon enough on this matter."
After the questioning is done a strange event happens as Progarman drops his weapon so he is weaponless and suddenly jumps the orc. Their is a clash for awhile but soon the injured orc is pinned on the ground under Progarman and the man begin slamming his fist into the orcs face before viciously grabbing the orc's head and snapping it to the side quickly. The sound of the orc's neck breaking echoes in the frigid air."
Ragnar nods and slaps a hand on Progarman's shoulder, "The deed is done, we must see to the burial rites now and also dispose of thise orc in a honroable way as he was a warrior."
The group is left to seek out the leader of the camps tent or to tend to their own wounds since you all have a feeling you'll meet the leader soon enough again.
It takes only moments it seems like but soon a small stack of wood is pulled together and the dead barbarian and orc are both wrapped in a cloth and placed in the middle of the wood. Many people are currently stand around the wood and the bodies in the middle, seeming to be awaiting their leader and also maybe someone else.
Jason of Aisildur Wednesday July 21st, 2004 10:49:02 PM
Jason kneels a distance from the pile of wood that stands as the foundation for the funeral pyre.
"Domi, I ask you to find it in your heart to forgive my lack of trust in these people. They have shown me that they are both honorable and courageous. If it is your will, I would be honored to help them in defending their village from the coming evil." he pauses for a moment, looks up at the two wrapped corpses, then bows again,
"May your wonderous blessing guide the souls of those who have acted in honor, and fought bravely." Jason then stands, and waits near his companions, for the ceremony to begin.
Ilsidur Wednesday July 21st, 2004 11:40:42 PM
Ilsidur moves to the side of the future pyre, and says quiet devotions over the bodies, waiting for the barbarians to carry out their rituals. The dwarf cleric is interested to see which of the Woldian Gods these people revere, since he had not seen any religious signs since they had arrived at the camp.
Sly and Luke Thursday July 22nd, 2004 4:22:24 AM
Sly attends the funeral, but stand there in what look like a black mood. He seem to be looking at the funeral pyre, but see nothing, hear's nothing (he's deep in though). The only way you know that he's alive, is you can see his breath vapers. Sly will stay that way untill something breakes unto his thoughs (after all he is half elf.)
Luke sits beside his master, he sometimes pokes Sly with his nose, but no responds. Luke know something is going on in Sly's head and it my not be pretty.
Savin 66/76 hp (NPC'd by Al) Thursday July 22nd, 2004 10:50:58 AM
Savin watches in silence as the bodies of the fallen are consumed in fire.
The sudden and brutal death of the orc had been an instructive lesson on the brutal efficiency of life in this climate. Were they to face the larger party from which these came, they could, no doubt, expect no more.
Peerimus Thursday July 22nd, 2004 2:06:17 PM
The sudden fight takes Peerimus a second to process and he steps back as he does. Odd they would lay both in the fire Peerimus decides to return to his original thought of seeking shelter from the cold while he is still able and enters teh tent to find Shiraz and Yorrick.
Upon locating them he gives Yorrick a welcoming rub and says to Shiraz, "The others are still outside at the Pyre. We will probably be leaving soon to intercept this army the orc mentioned and hopefully one of them can fill in more information on the slavers."
Niobe Thursday July 22nd, 2004 7:15:41 PM
Niobe watches the funeral pyre and cannot believe that they would waste so much fire-wood on a orc. Honestly she can't truly grasp wasting so much fire-wood on anyone out here. The thief observes the barbarians and their reactions to all of this and wonders what sort of role she will end up acquiring among them while they stay there. Without realizing it at first she notices that none of her comrades are speaking much and Sly looks like a storm front. Briefly she wonders what is eating him. Quietly she walks over to Sly and then shakes his arm just a bit. "What is gnawing on you? You look like to could chew on a sword and spit daggers." Wisely Niobe takes a tiny step back and a half step away from Sly before he socks her. She moves rather quick and gracefully. Warily she waits for an answer from him. "You know we probably don't need their blessing to hunt those orcs down?" Obviously Niobe is fishing for info on what is bugging Sly in particular. She isn't very concerned for the others at the moment since they seem to just be contemplating what has happend, or maybe even just the funeral rite.
Justin Webber (DM) Funeral Thursday July 22nd, 2004 11:36:28 PM
Most of the group watches or are in their own little world of thoughts or such as Mekrenden the leader of the village walks out along with a single very old man that no one has seen before.
The older man wears many sea shell and such jewelery and charms and carries a simple staff which he holds up in the air while staing infront of the wood pile and dead bodies, "These two even though one is a enemy fought bravely. They both died a good death, one of a warrior. They both will find their way into the halls of Domi where they will find peace and be with their ancestors. We send both now to their resting place, their place of honor and pray that the knowledge and battle spirit lost from our own tribe comes back to us and gives us the strength and courage to become stronger and defend our lands."
With this said the old man lowers his staff and pulls some powder from a pouch at his waist and tosses it onto the wood before a torch is slowly tossed onto the wood. A bright flash of light and flame erupts and then a steady burning fire as each of the barbarians move up and toss a single item into the fire. Most of the items are herbs, a few toss ornamentally carved items that looks like wooden weapons into the fire.
Only after the fire has completely burned out does Mekrenden come to the group and speak, inviting you into his tent, "Ragnar told me of what the orc told you. We have many problems now which you will help us with I would expect."
Mekrenden looks to at his own tent a moment before speaking again, "We will fix the lodges and tents here along with stock them with food. I want...no, ask you to track and see about this orc camp you have found out about. Maybe clues of what you seek is there....once you have helped us we will keep our promise and lead you to the gnome city near here where you can no doubt find more info still and possibly buy help."
Sly and Luke Friday July 23rd, 2004 8:35:31 AM
Sly turns his head towards Niobe, Smiles at her, "I was in deep though, I was trying to remember what my mother said about dragons, Specialy about Black Dragons. But if I remember right, she also said that they can be betain by magic weapons or Magic spells. Like Fire and electicity." Sly's mood comes back (you can actuly see his mood change) as he continues, "How to portect all of my friends, and these good Barbarian people? They don't know what they face and I can only imagin as to what those orcs will do to this village if they win."
Sly expresion does not change as they are invited to go in to the tent of Mekrenden. Sly's reply "These people are very good to us, they saved our lives. I Sir will meet with you, They (pointing to the Children of Chaos) will decide for themselves. You see we have no one leader here, we decide for our selves and stick toghther."
Jason of Aisildur Friday July 23rd, 2004 3:30:22 PM
Jason listens to Sly. He nods his head, then moves to Mekrenden.
"I will join him in pledging my effort to your cause. By Domi's will we shall succeed." He then turns and waits for the rest of his companions to decide, before he says or does anything more, other than try to keep warm.
Peerimus and Yorrick Friday July 23rd, 2004 4:13:13 PM
"We will locate the group and if possible destroy the threat they pose to this village, but I have a question first. You have mentioned a balance in these lands several times and if the orc community is destroyed it would seem that balance would vanish. What does the orc community supply that this village requires?"
Niobe Friday July 23rd, 2004 7:28:16 PM
Niobe nods slowly as she considers Sly's words, "Well I don't really know much about dragons. I'll leave that to you." She winks at Sly, "however I do know a thing or two about tracking and thankfully I am a quick study." With a laugh she concludes, "anyway it is time that those orcs were on the receiving end of the trouble."
She takes her time to listen to the chieftain or whoever he is once the fires have burned down. "Unless anyone else volunteers you'll need a tracker. I need the practice. [*unreadable grin*] So when do we leave?"
Why give lip-service to 'honor' and repaying debts when her motives are inclined more towards personal gain than ideological quirks? The thief certainly hopes that the orcs have something or other worth value to either her or someone (other than Sly) possibly seeking information. She remembers hearing adventure stories where the 'heroes' gained quite a bit of wealth in one fashion or another. Niobe isn't worried if the honor approach is more pleasing to these people, she doesn't think that what she says or does really matters much at any rate. In her mind it is Sly in particular, and then maybe the other men that have to pander to what the locals like. She is already an anomaly here by default of her gender she feels.
Niobe will follow Sly and Mekrenden to where ever they decide to make plans for the forray.
Savin 66/76 hp (NPC'd by Al) Friday July 23rd, 2004 10:43:30 PM
Things were unfolding as he had expected. Now was the time to prepare.
"Ilsidur, my friend, I am injured and would much appreciate your healing touch."
Justin Webber (DM) Plans Friday July 23rd, 2004 11:00:08 PM
Mekrenden looks to the others and chuckles at the comment on the balance, "Yes, the balance. Everyone brings a degree of balance to nature. We live happy lives most of the time with our fishing and such that we do. The orcs bring chaos to us in the order of fights and this in turn keeps us sharp incase of attacks and prepares us for trouble and keeps the possiblity of us going soft from happening."
Mekrenden motions to outside of the tent, "The young get battle experience and this in turn teaches them weariness of creatures, including things we hunt. They learn caution and repsect for the enemy and creatures we call food. If the orcs did not exist then our way of life would be effected. Also a normal village could only support so many people before it would have to break some peopel away to make another tribe some place else. The orcs and wolves both keepthis from happening mostly along with the weather here." Mekrenden breaks into a smiles and nods, "Like always, this camp that the orc spoke of must be the remainder of the attack party and not really the whole orc tribe."
Jason of Aisildur Friday July 23rd, 2004 11:49:47 PM
Jason waits for the barbarian leader to finish, and then steps forward to speak with him.
"If I may ask, I should like to find the member of your tribe that is in charge of supplies. The weather in this land is...harsher than what I am use to. Some furs and other supplies would be of great benifit once we begin our mission to find out more about this orc tribe." Jason states. He then moves back, waiting for the leader to answer him.
Peerimus and Yorrick Saturday July 24th, 2004 10:13:46 AM
Peerimus nods the answer is as he hoped from Mekrenden. Assuming the day is still young, "We should make ready to leave as soon as we can. The orcs will be easily followed. There is nothing that walks that Yorrick can not follow," He gives the great bear a firm pat, "no offense Niobe, but he can also do it at greater speed."
If the day is setting on, Peerimus will suggest leaving at first light and that Yorrick still work as the main tracker. Niobe or others with tracking skills could assist if they wish.
Niobe Saturday July 24th, 2004 6:00:41 PM
Niobe looks Peerimus square in the face, she smiles slowly. The smile could very easily rival the harsh cold of the Ice Vein. It would have better if she had frowned instead. For Niobe the air in the tent just became close and warmer. In a psychological sense anyone who notices her expression might just perhaps feel that temperature in the tent feels colder.
"Actually that was exceptionally insulting, Peerimus. I am glad that you trust that... animal," Niobe replies in a cold, measured tone not really caring at the moment if she is being offensive in return. She is almost trembling from surpressed emotion.
She leaves it at that and will not mention the subject again at any time. Basically being so rudely degraded in comparison to a mere animal did nothing to promote any goodwill from the thief/ranger. Normally she does not have a low opinion of animals, but she puts that aside for the moment to indulge in being upset over her wounded pride.
She moves to a farther point away from the source of 'the slight', and will certainly offer no apology; in the immediate future, to Peerimus or anyone else for either her words or actions. Oddly enough she does not look angry, whatever emotion she is experiencing at the moment is well hidden behind a completely unreadable facade. She keeps her gaze firmly fixed on a seam in one of the tent walls. This is the first time she publicly exibits any deep-felt emotion.
The thief keeps trying to remind herself that Druids are not people-persons, and therefore what they say about people should be taken with a bucket of salt. After all Druids; in particular, seem to respect animals far more than people or peoples' skills. Niobe is not sounding as convincing to herself as she would have hoped.
If anyone does 'dare' to speak to her she will be listening but will not react nor answer to anything reguarding Yorrick, tracking or 'the incident' during this "council". If she decides to say anything more she will try to be brief and to the point. She will not offer any other actual aid since getting stepped all over once was more than enough for her hurting pride and self-image.
((Daniel I sincerely hope you don't take any of this personally. I just couldn't resist having Niobe get offended by that comment. I know that the comment was well meant and all, but telling a young woman that a bear is her superior in something... LOL, its not good for the ego. *grin*))
Sly and Luke Sunday July 25th, 2004 8:53:56 AM
Sly listensto what every body has to say, Now he will break his silence, "Sir! The balance is part of the whole Wold and you are right we all need balance to keep us strong. But I feel that this time it is different, I'll tell you why.
We elves and half elves have been battleing orcs as far back as I can remember. If I am to beleve what THAT warrier Orc said. I believe what has happen to my village, Will happen to your village. That orc said that they have an army of Orcs ready to strike. That means we must find the rest of that advance party that attack us today, before they have a chance to report to the main group.
Or else what happen to my village, where every body disapeared and every thing in that village disapeared as if nobody was ever there. Will happen to this village and that Sir! is not balance. I"m ready to go and hunt down that lone surviver, before he has a chance to report. Not because of the promase your people made, but for the sake of all of you. You see I mentioning this to you because I don't like what was said about a Black Dragon."
Sly sit back down again and pets Luke.
Peerimus and Yorrick Sunday July 25th, 2004 11:37:37 AM
Peerimus stands there and it is quite obvious he is completely in the dark over why Niobe is upset. "It was? I meant no insult and of course I trust him as should you, I was just..." he trails off as Niobe moves away, cocking his head slightly to the side trying to decide whether to pursue the point.
He looks to anyone nearby, "Why is she upset? Yorrick is the best tracker." Peerimus continues to wear the same confused expression.
((No, no you played that perfectly, especially the druid are not people persons in my opinion. :) ))
Shiraz Sunday July 25th, 2004 9:32:56 PM
OOC sorry had doctors visits the last half of the week preparing for my sons surgery on Tuesday.
Shiraz listens to the chieften carefully and prepares himself for a cold track. Shiraz walks away from Peerimus smiling at Niobes sullen nature remembering that he too once had a fallign out with the venerable druid.
Ilsidur Sunday July 25th, 2004 10:23:39 PM
Ilsidur smiles as he listens to Mekrenden. "Well, I am always ready for a good orc hunt. As for the balance, orcs are the evil underbelly of the Wold that balances all that is good and light. The only good orc is a dead orc, I say. And I still want to run into Bear and Void one last time." It is clear that the dwarf has no love for orcs.
Ilsidur then frowns at the exchange between Peerimus and Niobe. "Peerimus, I think you hurt the young lady's feelings. Maybe you could appologize to her, and diffuse the situation."
Jason of Aisildur Monday July 26th, 2004 8:14:21 AM
"Admitting ones err takes perhaps the greatest courage of all. Domi would look quite favorably on such an act...should it be justified." Jason says as he watches the exchange between Peerimus, Niobe, and Ilsidur.
The paladin had been watching Niobe closely, and found her to be very dramatic. But she perhaps had better discipline over her craft than her emotions, despite her best attempts to hide them.
Savin 66/76 hps d20+13=24 d20+10=25 Monday July 26th, 2004 10:02:41 AM
Savin will move quickly but silently (move silently 24) up behind Niobe, moistening his finger in his mouth. He will use a touch attack to stick his wet finger in her ear and twist it around some. (touch attack 25 ac without flanking bonuses)
When she spins around in fury, he will be grinning and give her a quick peck on the cheek. "Don't worry, I still love you. Even though you can't track as well as a bear. Your much prettier than a bear, that's for sure."
Peerimus and Yorrick Monday July 26th, 2004 10:07:01 AM
Peerimus's eyes widen slightly at Ilsidur's statement and his head cocks to the side when Jason speaks, "I did not mean too." He quickly moves across to Niobe to stand in her peripheral vision. "Niobe, I meant no offense and am sorry for any hurt I may have caused you. It was not my intention."
Peerimus will stand for a few seconds in silence and then back off, returning to Yorrick and saying to the bear in a low voice, "Naje wejo'uoveme Kouloum'aa." Yorrick turns his head and gives a big shake.
Sly and Luke Monday July 26th, 2004 11:25:09 AM
Sly is suprised at Shiraz hi-jinxs, but it did make Niobe smile. "Niobe! We all know that you are the best at what you do and we do appreciate you very much. But we do have to get ready for these good people!"
Luke mean while goes to Yurric and nuzzles him "Best tracket"
Outfitting (DM/Al) Monday July 26th, 2004 3:57:11 PM
Mekrenden watches. And he listens. Finally, the corners of Mekrenden's mouth turn upward in a thin smile of approval.
"Bravery. Pride. We wield such weapons too. On the plains of Ice Vein, there is nothing. We must use everything we have. But beware. They are weapons with two edges."
"We have none in charge of supplies," the aged barbarian leader replies to Jason. "We each care for all things of the tribe. But we will send you a woman." The barbarian's smile becomes sly and knowing. "Woman are wise. They carry the secrets. Ragnar and the others of the hunt party have spoken of your problems. Our women may find a way to help you."
"Return to your tent. Ready your magic. You must all aide each other. Ready yourselves for the cold of the ice. I will send the woman."
The lines of Mekrenden's drop into folds of worry. "Black dragon," he says and shakes his head.
Sly and Luke Monday July 26th, 2004 6:06:11 PM
"Thank-you Sir." Sly bows, turns telling the others "Come Friends! Let's get ready to go hunting(and Sly really meams hunting Orc)."
As they leave the tent Sly grab Niobe's hand, then speaks to her "I don't want you to fight with this female. I want you to learn avary thing you can frome her as I will. I know you the best at what you do, because you would not have that speicial tattoo on your hand." Sly smiles at Niobe and off they go to their tent.
Niobe Monday July 26th, 2004 7:08:16 PM
After Savin's rather unusual and highly unexpected "attack" Niobe does indeed spin around to face him. With her hand clapped firmly to her ear she looks rather surprised, certainly upset and slightly 'green about the gills' from just having a wetted finger stuck in her ear. Fury will just have to wait until the surprise of it all passes.
Niobe does indeed take note of Savin's grin immediately after turning. His giving her a peck on the cheek and then finally his words really throws her for a loop. She looks definately happy with the compliment but makes a dismissive sound. "I don't know whether to kiss you or kick you for that comment Savin." There is a touch of humor in her voice. She follows up with an enigmatic smile; almost as if she seems to be considering some form of action. She omits adding a query about which reaction he might prefer.
"Thank you for rating me prettier than Yorrick. I guess he isn't your type?" Niobe adds not being willing to pass up on a jest. She grins broadly. If anything she now almost feels like chuckling.
That all passes nearly in the blink of an eye as Peerimus addresses her. She shakes her head slowly. "Just wounded pride and a severely deflated ego. It'll heal before I'm married." The thief shrugs indicating that it is all water under the bridge. She wisely does not bring up the topic that she doesn't fully trust Yorrick near as much as Peerimus does. Partly because she hasn't spent much time around the bear and partly because she still believes; to a degree, that (most) animals lack a certain 'finesse'.
"Thank you Sly. It seems that the only thing left to me is thieving; and I could rob you all blind; on a whim, if I had a scape-goat to pin it on... And if I hadn't promised that you were all off limits as marks." She almost has a long suffering look for a moment, but it is possibly only mock martyrism. "I never said that I wasn't going. I fully intend to wreak some havoc on those orcs still. Please go ahead and finish making your plans."
Upon leaving when Sly takes her hand and admonishes her not to instigate any further quarrels and to learn instead she hesitates briefly. "I have no intentions on behaving badly towards our hosts. I also did not realize that I reacted badly to other women; nice of you to point that out. Thank you." Once again she shrugs, "I hope to learn all that I can from them, because failure to do so could jeopardize lives." Yet again Niobe shows that she can indeed be serious-minded as well as caring when it suits her. Much of her testiness is most likely the result of 'boredom'. Being in the provinces can do that to urbanites sometimes. After all with everyone knowing everyone it would be no secret who the culprit is if something went missing!
Once the session is ended she will retire to whatever accommodations they have received and idly go through her gear while considering what would be the most enjoyable thing to do to the make the orcs lives miserable. After packing most of her equipment for the forray she will spend time carefully sharpening a few daggers while occasionally watching the others. She will mull over Yorrick and Peerimus while she considers what benefits they bring to the group as a whole, including Yorrick's tracking skills. After all she doesn't dislike anyone among the Children of Chaos and she keeps in mind that everyone is valuable. Darned that comment stung though, what a bugger that I should suffer from Pride. Well there are worst sins... Niobe will also spend quite a bit of her time covertly watching Savin. (Hopefully while he isn't paying any attention to her, staring just is not polite.) She is trying to figure him out and to figure out why he kissed her cheek (the ear thing was rather too easy to figure out) and if his words had any deeper meaning. In other words just being a typical woman reading (too much)into things and 'wool-gathering'! Outwardly she looks like she is pondering the mysteries of existence.
When the women arrive to help them she will dutifully pay attention to them and what they say. With any luck they will not be lecturing her on what a woman's place should be! She heard enough of that from the merchants' wives when she lived at home.
Savin d20+13=26 d20+9=23 Monday July 26th, 2004 10:46:35 PM
Savin will check his gear, but not having any weapons and armor will be quickly done. He looks over his more mundane equipment, but that goes quickly too. However he notices Niobe occassionally giving him odd looks. (spot check 26)
He is suddenly worried. Did he insult her? Did he push things to far? Is she upset with him? Growing up in a monestary definitely didn't help him with his woman skills. Travelling with those gypsies, did give him some of the basics, but that was more flirting with women in the crowd to earn more money, not close one on one skills.
He remembers what Trista, the gypsy mother, told him several years ago. She said laying her hand on his smooth cheek "Savin, your dangerous because you are an innocent but a romantic. A deadly combination. Women love that." Till this day, he still doesn't understand what she was talking about.
He snaps out of his memory and falls back on what he is comfortable with. He makes 6 snowballs and starts to juggle them up in the air. Soon they are moving effortlessly and gracefully in a circle. He catches one on his foot and flips it back into the rotation. He slides into a full split and keeps them moving. He stands back up and takes a bite out of one and grimaces. He will say to no one in particular, "This act is better with apples." He will end with a florish and a bow to anyone watching and then say, "Catch my next show tomorrow. The troop will be here all week." He smiles at the memory.
Jason of Aisildur Monday July 26th, 2004 10:57:18 PM
Jason bows after Mekrenden says his piece.
"Thank you sir." he says. The young Paladin then retires to the chosen tent and awaits the women.
While he waits, Jason watches the others. He has only known them a short time, yet some how he feels as if he has always known them.
Getting ready for the cold and ice, Jason obtains a fur if offered. He also looks over the flasks of oil he has, to make sure they are ready to apply either over his armor to absorb the acid he might encounter, or to hurl at the enemy if needed.
Lastly, Jason finds a quiet and peaceful corner of the tent and then says several prayers to Domi. One for luck in battle. One for courage for his companions and himself. Finally, one for the safety of all who battle with him on the side of good.
Ilsidur Monday July 26th, 2004 11:26:06 PM
Ilsidur's face develops a shocked look as Savin carries out his antics, but smiles at Niobe's positive response. "Just like any family, we disagree, but then we can forgive each other," he thinks to himself.
Realizing he will be one of the key spellcasters to fortify the party against the incredible cold of the Ice Vein, Ilsidur thanks the barbarian leader for offering to send a 'woman' with the Children. "I presume that this woman will help protect us from the cold. Maybe she can teach me how to improve my protective spells so that they are more effective to combat the cold of Ice Vein."
The dwarf cleric returns to the tent to ready his gear and wait for this 'woman'.
Peerimus and Yorrick Tuesday July 27th, 2004 1:56:04 PM
Peerimus readily accepts Niobe's response and it seems has quickly shelved the incident and done and settled.
He gives the chief a short bow, almost a deep nod rather than a bow and moves with the group to the tent to await the promised help/tutoring.
He will consult with Ilsidur while waiting. "During our initial push into the Vein my protection spells went down in almost half the time. I can compensate by doubling the spells staying power and will be able to protect any of us who are in need. I also can help stave off the dragons acid, as I know you can, if we encounter him. I feel we should coordinate closely for backups, in the event of unforseen issues. I will Extend 7 Cold protectional spells and 3 normal ones, I will also prepare for the dragon with 2 acid protectional spells. If you have a similar compliment for tomorrow we should be without issue. By doing so, I will not be able to counter or counteract opposing spellcasters however and we know they have them."
He trails the last, thinking he has talked quite enough and Ilsidur in no novice and the druid anxiously awaits his thoughts to the first draft of the proposition.
She Who Knows Things (DM/Al) Tuesday July 27th, 2004 9:40:41 PM
For an hour or so, the group retires to the tent set aside for them. There is preparation. There is thinking. There is planning.
Soon enough, movement is heart in the entryway outside the tent. The inner tent flap moves aside and an elderly barbarian woman emerges. Behind her, follow two younger women. Both carry large sacks. They are all stout, one might even say, heavy. Niobe, beside them is small and svelte.
The older woman walks amongst the group in silence. She examines all of your clothing. She looks up, unafraid, with curious eyes at Shiraz. At Ilsidur's side, she kneels, and examines his cloak.
Finally, she speaks.
"I am Elonee. I see you have magics. We have none." She goes to one of the bags held by the other women. From it, she removes a flat leather pouch and approaches the fire. Removing the top reveals that inside is a flat metal case and only the covering is leather. With deft stabs of her worn hand, the old barbarian woman snatches red hot coals from the fire and tosses them into the metal box. She reaffixes the leather covered metal lid, and then, from the other bag removes an oddly fashioned leather undercoat. Sewn into one side is a waterskin with a tube to bring to the mouth. In another section is a pocket for food.
She thrusts the undercoat to Jason. "Put this on," are her only words. When he complies, she thrusts the flat leatherbound canister into a pouch at the small of his back.
"With only heavy coats, this will protect you for half of one day. The coals will die and you must put in new hot coals. These will help." She points at Peerimus, Shiraz and Jason. "You, and you, and you."
"We have blankets with pockets for the animals. These will keep them warm too."
She turns again to Jason, rapping a wrinkled knuckle against his armor. "This is a problem." She sighs, her old eyes lost in thought. "Maybe not so big a problem. Give me your metal skins and shells." She points at Sly, Shiraz, Ilsidur, and Jason.
Elonee and the other women gather up the armor and leave.
A few hours later, they return and lay out the armor. Each piece has a trim of wolf fur affixed to the edge with some form of form of glue. Elonee stands and gives a somewhat dubious turn of her head. "Maybe this will work." she says.
From the bags, the other girls pull undercoats of various sizes; one for each of you should you decide to use one. They are all provisioned with food, water, and a coal-pack. Along with that are heavy wolf skin coats; also one for each.
"There are blankets with coal-packs for your animals in the stable. I will leave now. I wish you the favor of Ice Vein."
On the way out, she looks at Niobe. She shakes her head, and finally says to her what has been on everybody's mind.
"You are so thin, girl."

Shiraz watches the old woman intently, marking her words so that he learns from her. As she points to him Shiraz bows slightly, thank you kind hostess for the instruction and the cold weather gear. Shiraz Gives up his armor to the lady and tries on the leather coat. When his armor is returned to him Shiraz Tries on all teh gear in varying combinations until he gets it right. Shiraz then loads up the waterskin side and the food pocket with rations from his pouch. Just before leaving he will fill his coal pan and assist the others.
ooc: Shiraz is wearing the leather undercoat, breastplat and heavey coat.
Jason of Aisildur Tuesday July 27th, 2004 11:40:43 PM
Jason, still wearing the rigged undercoat the woman asked him to wear, bows and thanks her. Then he turns to obtain a heavy fur coat from the pile.
With all of his gear ready, and what ever provisions are provided placed in his pack and sacks, Jason helps the others until the group is ready to leave.
Once they are set to go, he takes some fresh hot coals, and places them in the coal holding metal box of his undercoat, then places his fur trimmed mail on over, then places the fur overcoat on over the armor. Lastly he grabs his shield, his amulet, and the rest of his gear and then, when the group decides, heads out with them.

Jason has dawned one of the undercoats, one of the overcoats, and his fur trimmed armor.
