Woossshhhhhhh!!!
A 6" high mini tidal wave sweeps through the camp and the surrounding area, carrying with it the smell of salt and seaweed, gradually sinking into the soil beneath. Everyone gets their feet wet. Eewww! The base of Theo's robe becomes sodden, Ryan's cat leaps on her companion's shoulder. To Olyn it seems as though someone's dropped a giant bucket of sea water a short distance away. Vauhwyt's now enormous paws detect no further jolts or quakes from the ground.
In the gloom, its difficult to see. Vorelle moves quietly. She can't make anything out ahead other than nearby tree trunks, but there are VERY strange sounds - slick popping and swishing, and a loud snort, sniff, sniff - coming from the north west.
Zayne can 'just' about make out what looks like a large, round bulk, about 50 ft ahead in that direction.
Suddenly, a flat, abrasive paddle-shaped limb or tentacle comes flying out of the darkness.
It aims straight for Zayne - attempting to slap him hard and wrap itself around his torso. ((Defeat Grapple check 24 - if grappled, take 5 stinging DAM. Also roll 1d4 to determine how many limbs are caught up. 1 limb free means you're able to reach for a hand weapon. No AoO on this particular round.))

"Zayne! Are you okay?!" hollers Theodore. He sends Macaw hopping from branch to branch to get a closer look at what's attacking them. The young mage trembles visibly as he drops his quarterstaff in favor for his wand of burning hands.
Theodore maneuvers himself to shoot a cone of fire at the attacking appendage, in front of Zayne, careful not to include his friend in the blast.

Vauhwyt hates getting her feet wet, and briefly thinks about casting a Prestidigitation to dry off, but suddenly Zayne is ententacled!
The liontaur casts Enlarge Person on Mookie (via Share Spells Ability) and shouts, "Flank it with me, Mookie!"
She moves 40 feet towards the source of the Tentacle. Mookie flies up and past the creature, 80 feet. That's maybe 20 feet up in the air and 50 feet out? The eagle-sized Raven tries to put some foliage between himself and the monster.

At the sudden commotion, Dietrich dashes forward, sword drawn. Rose ignites a torch.
It's still pretty gloomy out there. However - Theo's burning hands spell briefly illuminates the scene, and there's a roar, as the flames, followed by a nasty whack from Olyn's morningstar, land squarely on the tentacle. The skin on the tentacle is smooth and grey.
Vorelle works her way alongside whatever it is. In the darkness, she can only make out a huge bulky shape - maybe 20ft long, 15 ft high. It smells like something pulled out of the fishing nets back in Dirt City harbour.
Mookie is now up in the air, directly above the shape. Vauhwyt races into the fray - and so does another tentacle! It sweeps past wildly, giving the liontaur a nasty backhander in the dark (Hits AC20, 5 DAM).
Just what on earth IS this thing?
(Holding tentacle 1, waiting for Zayne's post - damage from Olyn and Theo will have had an effect.)

Dietrich is cursing and simultaneously praying for Domi's protection. Mookie flies to the other side of the monster, giving it a wide berth as he moves so as to avoid attacks of opportunity. He tumbles just in case, with a 15 -- just what he needs to avoid an AoO. Then he tries to help Vauhwyt hit the creature -- but his roll of 6 is not high enough to aid another. He still provides those vital flanking bonuses, though.
Vauhwyt lashes out with her two paws, then takes a step back and pokes at the monster with her spear. The paws miss but the spear hits AC 17 for 15 hp plus 5 hp sneak attack damage, for 20 hp damage total.

Tentacle 1 has a firm grip on Zayne and begins to weave about as the ranger hacks away with his axe. Theo lands another scorcher on the limb, while Dietrich and Ryan aim to do some damage, too. On this occasion, the warrior's sword just misses the tentacle, and Ryan's arrow goes flying off into the trees!
A short distance away, Vauhwyt continues her boxing match with Tentacle 2, succeeding at stunning the flailing limb with a savage stab with her spear. Right now it's not moving.
At the flank of the huge creature - Vorelle hits squarely with the first blow of her axe. It's at this point that everyone hears what could be a loud spitting sound - and everyone in the tentacle area - Zayne, Theo, Ryan, Olyn, Vauhwyt, Rose and Dietrich are hit by a projectile wash of liquid that has a strange, chemical smell. Those in the liquid's path must make a REFLEX save of DC 13, or be temporarily blinded for 1d3 rounds.
Injured Tentacle 1 begins to drag Zayne slowly toward the dark shadowy bulk.

Zayne's axe, coupled with the damage already done, loosens the grip of the tentacle, setting the ranger free. Ryan's arrow sinks into the flesh of the limb, causing it to recoil. Vorelle lays into the body of the creature one more time with her own weapon and hears a low snort, followed by another, as though something is gasping for breath and losing the struggle to do so.
Theo, Dietrich and Vauhwyt struggle to get the liquid out of their eyes. The fluid is everywhere, splattered all over faces, clothing, and the surrounding trees. Rose helps with her own water bottle, splashing it in eyes, washing them clear.
Ryan and Olyn can just about see that tentacle 1 is very weak, tentacle 2 is not moving. Mookie tells Vauhwyt the same thing.

DM Jan Wednesday July 21st, 2004 11:44:43 AM
The huge bulky, tentacled creature seems to go into some kind of death throe - rolling from side to side and thrashing about.
Vorelle lays into the beast once again with her axe, only to have roll rapidly toward her. ((Roll Reflex Save DC 12 or bounce off the creature and take 2 DAM))
Dietrich's sword slices very effectively at the tentacle, and it falls to the ground - cauterized by Theo's fire.
Vauhwyt has made the correct assumption - the creature is indeed dying, and in a few moments, it ceases thrashing, gives its last gasp, and is still.
Rose creeps forward with the torch. The light reveals what looks like a squid, but instead of being about a foot long, this thing is huge! And where did it come from??
Most of the surrounding trees are silent and unmoving, giving nothing away, although the one closest to the dead beast is saturated and dripping with water. Had it disappeared, then brought something back on its return? Who knew? Perhaps it made one wonder if the opposite happened occasionally, where a tree drifted off to goodness knows where and took something, or someone with it.
It's the middle of the night, there's a huge dead thing right next to the campsite, and the light of Rose's torch captures the reflection of pairs of eyes, here and there in the woodland gloom. Watching. Waiting.
Theodore and Macaw Wednesday July 21st, 2004 12:10:46 PM
Theodore puts his wand away and calls for Macaw to come down from the branches. "It's amazing," he says to himself as he pokes and prods at the huge squid. "The forest must be able to not only leave the forest, but bring something back with it when it returns."
He scrubs at his eyes, still feeling the sting of the squids ink. "I think that if one of us should get separated by a teleporting tree, it would be best to stay with that tree until it returns to the forest. It seems that it will always reappear. Of course, I don't know how long any particular tree might be gone from the forest. Ow!" Macaw pecks his master on the head.

Dietrich Wednesday July 21st, 2004 12:20:44 PM
Dietrich is really amazed to see such a huge sea creature in the forest. He thinks "That's what comes from walking together with all this wizards! Very strange indeed."
He takes a better look at the monster and cuts off a small part as souvenir.
As they continue to be observed by something, the fighter keeps his sword ready and suggests the group to keep together, with each covering the others flank and rear and with the magic users (not Vauhwyt) in the center and using the dead monster, trees and bushes as cover.
Vauhwyt (hp 14 of 19) Wednesday July 21st, 2004 12:45:36 PM
Vauhwyt looks at the beast and cries, "Mmmm. Calamari! Rose, you know how to cook this up, right?"
The liontaur, still huge for a little bit, uses the time left in her spell to do some butchery. She cuts meat as directed by Rose, and she looks for the thing's gizzard. "Maybe there are some pearls in here or something!"
Vorelle d20+6=8 d20+6=11 Wednesday July 21st, 2004 3:34:26 PM
Vorelle lets out a soft "oof!" as the sea creature thrashes into her, knocking her backward onto the forest floor (Reflex 8). She blinks a few times at the forest canopy overhead, then slowly climbs to her feet and retrieves her axes.

Rose tells Vauhwyt how to cut up the squid and reminds her that the ink may be useful. Rose is checking on the food supplies to see what is still good, after that she will start to take inventory of what (if anything) got washed away in the flood. She sings all the time, not wanting to disappear.

DM Jan Thursday July 22nd, 2004 2:01:08 PM
There's a squishy sound as Theo pokes at the squid, accompanied by a stench of fish and sea salt, which is bringing in predators for miles around. Zayne's arrows fly off into the gloom, and some of those eyes disappear for a little while, only to return later accompanied by others. Dietrich is able to cut off part of the creature's rather nasty calcified beak as a souvenir, while Vauhwyt starts cutting away at the flesh. Vorelle's knowledge of giant squid comes from what she might have overheard down at the docks - some of the deep sea fishermen reckon they've spotted one or two, far south of Dirt City, out in the Lotophagi Ocean, but other fishermen reckon its a tall tale, meant to score a few free pints in the taverns. Rose gets down the the practical things. She discovers that although most packs are wet, the contents aren't too badly damaged.
However - the light of day, when it finally arrives, reveals that the ink has permeated the clothes of whoever was in the firing line. Cloaks and vests proudly display dark blue splotches, and there are some rather interesting blue stains on faces, too. It'll wear off the flesh, but not until a few days have passed. Fabric is permanently dyed. Fur will have to be gradually shed. The squid - cut into very small pieces, is edible. Neen and the birds will no doubt prefer it raw. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be anything of value in the innards of the beast.
Daylight also reveals the path ahead, still to the west, and a possible fork which leads slightly off to the north west.
Dietrich Thursday July 22nd, 2004 3:47:12 PM
Dietrich is not particularly happy that his clothes have been painted blue and the scar in his face forms a strange motive with the ink mark. But the souvenir is a good thing and he has something special to show in the pubs now! He eats Rose's calamari and helps breaking the camp up.
When the group starts marching again, Dietrich keeps his longbow ready and guides the mules, letting the others sing. He asks his comrades: "People, where exactly are we heading to? Does anyone have any idea? I don't want to wander for too long in this strange forest. Imagine if it takes us to where that giant squid used to live."
Vauhwyt Thursday July 22nd, 2004 8:32:09 PM
Vauhwyt uses a prestidigitation cantrip to clean herself off.
"Let's move off a bit and set up camp again. I'm exhausted."
Theodore and Macaw Thursday July 22nd, 2004 9:23:23 PM
Theodore turns down a portion of cooked squid. He puts a hand on his belly claiming that he's not too hungry. But the others can see him secretly munching on some trail food when he thinks no one is looking.
Macaw takes to the food, and gulps down slivers of the squid if offered any. Theodore doesn't seem to notice, or perhaps doesn't care about, the ink staining his tunic. He continues on with the rest of the party, enjoying the trip through the forest and humming in tune to anyone who happens to be singing.
Vorelle d20+6=11 d20+6=23 Thursday July 22nd, 2004 10:42:25 PM
The next day, Vorelle continues to be alert for any sight or sound of danger. [Spot 11; Listen 23]
Privately, she agrees with Dietrich; it's dangerous to be spending time in a forest where any one of them could be snatched away at any moment. Of course, it's equally dangerous to return to the Prince empty-handed. At least out here they have a fighting chance.
Rose d20+1=17 Friday July 23rd, 2004 2:27:58 AM
Rose sleeps restlessly for what remains of the night, everything is soaked and smells like fish. In the morning when she sees what everyone who had been inked looks like giggles "Ink colored people." After she stops (or almost stops) giggling she remembers to ask "Did anybody save the ink from the squid? I would like it to use for dying clothes and stuff."
If nobody gathered the ink rose will do it (or get someone else to, if it is still possible.
She studies her spellbooks and after using prestigation to clean and dry her clothes sleeping bag, blankets, and pillows she packs up and starts on the way staying in the middle of the group and singing loudly all the time. Everyonce in a while she will make a comment that everybody else has longer legs than her and to please slow down.

Morning sunlight breaking through the trees, coupled with birdsong here and there, makes for a pleasant walk.
However, the "Where are we going?" question is a good one. Especially as the path leading west comes to a fork ( see previous DM post).
Which way? And what is likely to reveal that the group is on the right path?

Theodore and Macaw Friday July 23rd, 2004 6:47:37 PM
Theodore sends Macaw up above the trees to get a bird's eye view of where the group is headed and a general direction of where either path might take them.

Dietrich marches through the forest, leading the mules and, now, satisfied with the good weather, the birds etc. When the group comes to the fork, he listens to Zayne and Rose, than he says:
"I think maybe it's a good time to have a small war council now, remember what we have on traces and plan our further movements. I also agree with Rose to send scouts to see what lies ahead the two paths, though, again, it could be a dangerous enterprise for our vanguard."

As Zayne checks the two routes, he will notice that the WESTERN path is more trodden down than the NORTH WEST path. Vorelle offers to do some scouting as Dietrich suggests that a plan of action might be in order.
Rose catches up on tiny legs - and while the party decides which path to take, or whether both paths should be scouted first, Macaw flaps up through the trees and into the sunlight. Far to the west is the glint of light on water - a great expanse of water. Suddenly, there's an abrupt commotion about 50 yards due SOUTH of him, as a huge flock of black birds erupt from the trees and begin wheeling and cawing in the sky.
Down below, Piper and Mookie feel the same, urgent sensation - Time to move, time to move, time to move -
A large, black owl, normally a nocturnal creature, swoops low past the party in a westerly direction.

WEST appears to be the main choice, with Vorelle tracking. The ranger doesn't spot anything at this particular time that links the path to who they are looking for - however, lack of growth on the path and the occasional heavy footprint suggest that this path is used reasonably often. There's even a few blunt limbs here and there, where someone has cleared the way.
As the party set off, there's a sudden 'happening' 50 yards to the south, as light from above streams in, onto the forest floor. It seems that a few trees - there a second ago - are there no longer. 50 yards appears to have been beyond Rose's singing range.
The way ahead looks very clear. Apart from the disturbance to the south, things look fine as the morning gets into high gear.
((David - nice rolls, but which way is Zayne going?))
((Anyone checking out that north west path?))
Dietrich AC 17; HP 24 d20+4=11 d20+2=16 d20-1=17 Tuesday July 27th, 2004 2:03:30 PM
Though the fighter would have prefered to clarify their position, than plan and only than move, something strange is happening (as he perceives from the raven's behaviour and the strange black owl) and Dietrich follows the others, looking out for dangers. He has an arrow prepared to shoot and keeps behind, in order not to trouble the sneaky guys with his noisy armour. When he sees the trees disapearing, the tough soldier imediatly starts humming and march song in a low tune, just to be sure.

Zayne d20+5=16 d20+5=11 Tuesday July 27th, 2004 3:18:15 PM
(OOC West of course. As long as he can help it he isn't going anywhere int his forest alone)
Zayne brings up the rear of the group this time. Cautious as always.(Listen 16 Spot 11)
Theodore and Macaw Tuesday July 27th, 2004 8:52:11 PM
Theodore marches on with the rest, taking great pleasure at the disappearing and reappearing trees. He finds the forest quite fascinating. "Gosh, we never would have seen something like this had we stayed in Dirt City for the rest of our lives."
He uses his quarterstaff as a walking stick. Macaw continues to fly about chasing any animal life he might spy. Occasionally he returns to perch upon the bird nest atop Theodore's head.
Vauhwyt (hp 15 of 19) and Mookie d20+3=8 Tuesday July 27th, 2004 11:23:37 PM
Vauhwyt hardly notices her halfling friend ... the weight is no burden. She is much more startled by the strange occurrances, and decides to add her own voice to Rose's. Her song is servicable but not really that good (Perform check 8).
Vorelle Wednesday July 28th, 2004 2:41:34 AM
"W-we seem s-safe enough n-n-now," Vorelle says as they move down the path. "C-c-can one of the b-birds scout the other p-p-path?"
Rose d20+1=8 d20+5=20 d20+6=16 d20+5=18 d20+4=10 Wednesday July 28th, 2004 3:03:32 AM
Rose starts to sing again, although not very well. She pays attention to what is on and off the trail. Piper flies on ahead "Race you big brother" she says, although nobody is sure who she is speaking to Mookie or Macaw.
DM Jan Wednesday July 28th, 2004 12:25:44 PM
The party moves through the forest. Songs are sung, and the immediate surroundings seem to respond and remain stable. For the most part, it's quite restful and invigorating, once the stability factor is ensured. Occasionally, to the left or right, deep in the trees, parts of the forest wink in and out - a huge oak, a stringy sapling, it doesn't seem to matter. It's usually accompanied by cawing and the fluttering of wings moments beforehand, like the birds know whats going to happen.
Later in the afternoon, Rose, sat atop Vauhwyt's back, spots another of the Marteaus cult markings, carved into the bark of an elm.
About the same time, Piper sees a curious shape in the trees to the north. Zayne, Dietrich, Vorelle and Rose can't hear any particular sounds coming from that direction but there's enough visual difference in that area to perhaps perk up their interest.
Dietrich AC 17; HP: 24 Wednesday July 28th, 2004 12:39:53 PM
Dietrich is amazed and a little scary with the continual disappearence of trees. When he sees the Marteus symbol, he wonders what might be the reason for it to be carved in the trees, as they aren't magic and appear with a certain regularity. `Perhaps it's for non-local Marteus servants to find their fellows` he thinks and keeps an eye on their back.
As the group approuches the diferent place, Dietrich whistles lowly to his friends and makes signs for them to halt and only let the scouts look at it first, while he keeps his bow ready to strike.
Zayne d20+5=18 Wednesday July 28th, 2004 1:22:46 PM
Looking to the north,Zayne asks,"Who wants to check that out with me?"(Spot 18)
Ryan and Neen Wednesday July 28th, 2004 3:39:27 PM
((OOC: Woohoo I'm back!)) Ryan steps forward "Neen and I will come Zachariah (Zayne)" He answers eagerly. "We're good at stealth"
Rose d20+6=26 d20+7=18 d20+5=13 d20+5=20 d20+4=21 d20+4=10 d20=12 d20+5=19 Wednesday July 28th, 2004 4:38:24 PM
Rose whispers in Vauhwyt's ear "Stop, there's a symbol on that tree and piper sees something to the north. Rose gets down and goes up to the tree to take a better look at the symbol, she is being as quiet as possible.
While rose goes to look at the symbol piper flies over to see what is in the north.
Theodore and Macaw d20+2=16 Wednesday July 28th, 2004 7:56:20 PM
Theodore halts at Dietrich's whistle and waits for the 'good-to-go' signal. He keeps an eye on the forest and keeps humming.
Macaw flaps off after Piper.

Vorelle d20+6=7 Thursday July 29th, 2004 2:53:12 AM
As the group walks along, Vorelle tentatively lends her voice to the song. Interestingly, she doesn't stutter when she sings, although her voice is breathy and faint.
Seeing Zayne and Ryan move forward to investigate the disturbance, Vorelle stays in the main party, trying to keep an eye on their backtrail. [Spot 7; rolled a 1!]
Vauhwyt (15 of 19 hp) and Mookie Thursday July 29th, 2004 7:55:52 AM
Vauhwyt casts Mage Armor and sticks with the group -- and urges everybody to check out the thing in the north.
Zayne d20+6=20 d20+6=22 d20+5=16 d20+5=10 Thursday July 29th, 2004 12:04:49 PM
Looking at Vauhwyt,"We don't all need to go. We are just going to take a peek at whatever is going on over there."
Looking at Ryan,"Remember no talking,we don't know what's over there and I am not too keen about finding out the wrong way."
Taking off his backpack,"Hang on to this,if we have to run,I don't want to any extra weight."
