Temple of Domi

Day one, morning. Temple to Domi, Plateau City. Six days before the festival of Gargul - DM Marcin
Monday July 26th, 2004 4:18:28 AM

The group retires for a night of well earned rest.

Early next day, before the party has had a chance to have breakfast, a summons comes from Kiriana. The messenger - a young acolyte of Domi - repeats three times that the matter is urgent.

Once everyone has settled comfortably in the conference chamber Kiriana, who looks as if she has had very little (if any) sleep last night, closes the door behind the Hamleters and looks over the gathered heroes.

"Something very troubling happened last evening. I am as of yet not fully able to comprehend the significance of the event, but it might be possible that I have made a very grave mistake by underestimating certain individual."

"Let me start from the beginning. As you all remember communications with me have been severed during your previous assignment. Let me fill in the details: as soon as I became aware of the scope of the dragon attack I decided to rush to the scene and try to lend my assistance to the ones who were trying to repel the marauders. I was fully aware of the risks associated with this task, so I decided to entrust my long time friend and an important member of our Organization, Renham, with critical documents and items of significance that I had at the time on my person. Among them was a coded journal detailing some of our operations and the Communications Coin. I instructed Renham to seek safety and wait until the attack is over."

"As fates would have it it was Renham, not me, who has died during the raid. A random bolt of electricity from a passing dragon reduced my friend to a smoking corpse. For a long time he was presumed missing and only after a few days have passed we were able to identify his body."

"This is where things start to get complicated. The journal, the Coin, and personal magic items carried by Renham turned out to be missing. A small storage of gems that our Organization happened to have stockpiled in the vincity of the site has been plundered, too."

"Through divination and interviewing eye witnesses we managed to figure out what has happened - or at least so we believe. Renham, on his run from the dragons, stumbled on Rhiad Blackwing."

Kiriana removes a black silk scarf from an object that has been sitting in the middle of the table all the time, revealing a small crystal ball. The Cleric of Domi whispers a word of command and a still image of a young man appears in the glass. This individual is rather boyish looking, maybe in his early twenties. His blonde hair has been given a fashionable cut. His cheeks are cleanly shaven, but he sports a small moustache. Overall he looks like someone who would be popular with ladies, but there is something about him that would make you think twice before lending him even a single copper. Maybe it is the smirk. Or maybe the fact that his moustache makes him look somewhat like a giant rat.

"This man, a bard by trade, has also been a member of the Organization, albeit a minor one. He has been recruited by Renham a few years ago. His only job so far has been attending certain parties and keeping his eyes and ears open."

"We believe Renham ran into Rhiad during the attack and the two tried to find shelter together. Rhiad survived the attack that killed Renham. After that, for reasons we can only speculate about, he decided to plunder his body, steal from us a small fortune in gems, and leave Plateau City."

"We have been looking into this character ever since. In retrospect we discovered that he might have had a grievance with the Organization. It seems the man had a romantic interest in one of our agents, whom I will call Violet."

The image in the ball flickers and briefly changes to display a likeness of an elegant woman with long, auburn hair and eyes that are actually a shade of violet. Then it returns to displaying Rhiad's smirk.

"Unfortunately, Violet met her death in a tragic accident about three weeks before the dragon attack."

"After looking more closely into Rhiad's behaviour in the past month we came to a conclusion that he convinced himself that Violet has been <sacrificed> by us to further some goals of the Organization. He has been actually heard to state that when drunk. This claim is obviously false and only shows how little he knows about us and our work ethics, but we believe this might be the reason why he has done what he has done. The man's personality was unstable to begin with anyway. Sigh."

"After stealing what he could he left Plateau City and took the road north. When I started scrying on him he was traversing the Red Hills travelling up the Old Trader's Road. I believe his intent is to sell the documents in his posession to one of our foes."

"The journal is written in code, but the code can be divined or broken. If the Coin is analyzed it might give someone great insight into our communications network. If this happens we will have to shut down all coins and start rebuilding the network from scratch."

Kiriana sighs. She looks very upset and disturbed.

"I probably should have nailed him there and then, but I decided to use his escape to check who exactly might be interested in buying the items he had for sale. You see, I have been convinced that he acted entirely on impulse when he decided to leave our ranks."

"What a fool I was."

"Scrying on him stopped working last night, sometime after he entered the halfing town of Angel Springs located in Crescent Valley. I have been searching for him long and hard and I found nothing - not even a hint of resistance one usually feels when the scrying spell fails. It is as if he has vanished from the face of the Wold."

"It takes magic well beyond what Renham has access to to fool divinations like that. He must have found an outside help. But how could that have happened so fast? Was somebody watching him before the attack on the Plateau City? Was he considering selling out before this event took place? They couldn't have planned for the dragon raid! And even if they did, there was no way for them to predict I would entrust Renham with such critical items. I no longer understand what is going on and that makes me very worried."

"Maybe I am no longer suited for the post I am holding. Time will come when we will discuss that with my fellow officers."

"Right now the most important thing is to get the Coin and the journal back. I cannot stress enough the significance of this assignment. If you fail several of our agents might be compromised. Some might be killed."

Kiriana sinks deeper into her chair. For the first time the party has a chance to see her without the usual aura of self-confidence.

"I will turn over to you the entire budget I have for this operation. Please contact Hagemenes and tell him I authorized you to withdraw entire funds for Operation Coin. I instructed him to gather together all cash and gems he could put his hands on on such short notice. It amounts to twelve thousand gold pieces. Use this to pay for any necessary resources and services you might have to obtain. After the mission is over you can deduct from that sum whatever you will deem to be an appropriate payment for your efforts. If you manage to recover any of Renham's items you can keep them, too. I'm sure he wouldn't mind. These are probably worth at least twice that much."

"Take the crystal ball with you. It is a minor item that has been set to display Rhiad's apparition. You might find it useful when you look for the man."

"I have arranged for one of our wizards to teleport you into Crescent Valley near the town of Angel Springs. He will be ready in two hours. The Crescent Valley is a fiercely independent region, so, if at all possible, please keep a low profile, especially since right now the Valley is preparing for an election of its next ruler. The last thing we need right now is a diplomatic incident, especially since almost all of our northern trade routes pass through the Valley. Try not to make it known that you work for Plateau City or somebody might come to a conclusion that you are trying to influence the outcome of the election."

"The same wizard will be standing by with teleport spells to help you come back. One of you will have to teleport in here and then take him to the party, but then he will be able to bring you all back to the Temple."

"Since I am missing my Coin there will be no contact with the Plateau City through the usual channel - until you bring it back to me."

"Your objectives, in order of importance, are:
- recovering the journal and the Coin. The journal is bound in black leather and has about one hundred fifty pages. All are numbered. About seventy have been filled so far,
- bringing Rhiad back for questioning. This means we prefer to have him alive,
- recovering Renham's items and gems,
- learning who aided Rhiad in evading my scrying."

"I will now answer any questions you might have."

[I would like to see the lists of prepared spells. If any of you are doing shopping in the Catacombs state that your character is bringing a Catacombs parcel with him. It will open by itself when the transaction is complete.]

Setanos
Monday July 26th, 2004 8:50:47 AM

Setanos listens to the tale being told, and nods grimly. "What can ya tell us o this town we be going ta? Anyone ya know there, anyone we should be avoiding."

Renik
Monday July 26th, 2004 9:08:06 AM

The rogue snorts with derision at Rhiad's moustach. "Dear me, the poor boy seems to have a slug balanced upon his upper lip." He strokes his chin. "Lady K (may I call you K? It sounds fitting, somehow) fear not, we will do our best to ensure the safe retrieval of your items. Agreed, fellows?

"But before we go do you mind if I ask into the exact circumstances of Violet's death? It may be irrelevant, but you never can tell when a little snippet of information will come in handy."

Tratain
Monday July 26th, 2004 12:56:49 PM

Tratain says to his companions, "Is there anything you think we need before we leave? Or are we mostly prepared? Also, on a side note Lady Kiriana, do you know if the village we are going to has a temple to Gargul? Or will we have to return here if we have not finished within 6 days time to attend the festival?"

Draax
Monday July 26th, 2004 11:00:29 PM

Draax listens to the priestess and ask the following, "Do you know what items Blackwing took from Renham's body? What type of instrument(s) does the bard play? And my last question is do you have any agents and/or safe houses in or near the city?"

Feng
Monday July 26th, 2004 11:37:15 PM

The half-orc feels bad for Kirianna. She obviously takes her work seriously and that means she's too hard on herself. Nobody can foresee everything.

"The first thing you need to do is trust in us. We will not fail you in this task. You are great at what you do but you need to sleep. Now the one thing that immediately came to my mind is where he disappeared and how. We don't know who specifically is helping him but we have to know who is capable of such things. Crescent Valley has to have some significance as well. Probably a base of operations or a meeting point."

Briefing continues - DM Marcin
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 7:08:17 AM

Kiriana looks surprised when Renik calls her Lady K. "Strange. The last person to come up with that name was Sharianna's half-brother (I think you met him in passing when I brought their team in to seal off the Machine). But that fellow has never acted right. Throws his helmet at the armor rack as soon as he steps through the door. Took one blow too many to the head, I think."

Kiriana turns to the paladin. "You are the best team we have. I have placed my complete trust in you. I am confident that you will do your best."

"Renham didn't carry any weapons on him. His items were mostly protective and utilitarian in nature. I think I remember he was wearing a Periapt of Health when I saw him for the last time, but I could be mistaken. He also had an Ioun Stone, but which kind I don't know."

"The stash of gems Blackwing plundered was consisting mostly of small rubies. These are not that common. You might be able to figure out where he spent his money if you look for them."

"The instrument he plays?" Kiriana is silent for a moment, deeply in thought. "I am fairly certain he had a harp with him when I was scrying on him. Whether he knows how to play anything else I can't be sure."

"Let me fill in some extra details about Crescent Valley. Most of the populace consists of halflings, though a major trade route passes through it, so, as it sees quite a lot of traffic, there are always some members of the bigger races in there. There are three towns in the Valley, and Angel Springs is the largest of them."

"We do not know of any hostile groups having a permament base of operations in that area. As for magic users, a powerful wizard used to live in the Valley, but I don't think anyone heard anything about him for more than fifty years. It was him who erected the Towers."

"We do not maintain any safe houses in the area, and right now no other operatives are active in the town. There has been no need; the halflings are concerned with their own affairs and ever since the Giant Towers have been erected there have been no threats coming from the Scab we needed to look out for."

"My last successful scrying on Rhiad took place the day before yesterday. When I broke off the link he was about to enter Angel Springs. Both he and his horse were exhausted. He simply had to stay there for a night."

"As for circumstances of Violet's death... I don't really want to talk about it, as she was not under my command and I shouldn't discuss details of her activities without consulting her direct superior first, but if you think it will help your mission... She was on an assignment at the time - a simple survelliance operation, I was told. She has been bitten by a water snake while crossing a river and started drowning. The poison killed her before others pulled her ashore."

"There is a temple of Donyra and a shrine of Domi in Angel Springs, but I don't think Gargul is that popular over there. Still, there have to be some lesser shrines to Him in the area. Maybe the locals can provide you with better directions."

"Stay ouf of sight of the Baron. The Baron is the only official figure of authority in the Valley. Right now the citizens are preparing to elect his replacement and he might be willing to make some supporters among the conservative families by dealing harshly with outsiders."

"The common townsfolk, on the other hand, should be fairly easy-going and helpful. At least that is how our agents described them after their previous visits to the town. Just be careful not to criticize their way of life too much. Some of them could prove to be overly, ah, patriotic."

"What else should we discuss?"

Sarigar and Black Paws
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 8:51:26 AM

Crouched in all fours and sitting even more like Black Paws than usual, Sarigar says, So, find the hairy lip guy, bring back the stuff, find out who owns him. Hmmm, got anything of this Ree-aahd that we can sniff? if we can get a scent, we can find him.
Spells:
Level 1 - Longstrider, Jump

Renik
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 4:18:17 PM

"Good thinking, Sarigar. That could certainly come in useful. I suppose we don't have the means to disguise us all as halflings, do we. Not that you'd countenance such a course of action, Feng!"

Feng
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 6:57:16 PM

"There are times when discretion is necessary but I cannot be a part of a dishonest portrayol of character. If you want to move around unnoticed then perhaps I could enter the town on my own. The attention I'll get should be enough to allow everybody else to enter quietly."

Gaxx
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 7:44:44 PM

Gaxx wonders quietly if he might be able to find some Gaxx sized armor among the halflings while he waits for the others to finish asking questions.

Draax
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 8:50:34 PM

Draax thanks the priestess for answering his questions. Not able to think of anything else to ask he sits and waits while she answers the questions of the others.

Concluding the briefing - DM Marcin
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 2:55:48 AM

"A personal possession of Blackwing? Sure, I have some items that used to belong to him. I made the effort of locating them before I started scrying on him. The spell works better if you have a thing like that at your disposal."

"I see there are no more questions" - Kiriana stands up - "therefore I will go oversee the preparations for your departure and get the item you requested. Meet me in two hours in the main hall of the Temple. If there are any more matters to discuss we will talk about them then."

Kiriana leaves the chamber without another word, her mind obviously already busy with tasks ahead of her.

[The party has two hours to do any final preparations - write what you would like to achieve in that time. Since nobody mentioned Catacombs parcels I understand there are no ongoing transactions.]

Setanos
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 7:56:01 AM

Setanos nods to the priestess as she leaves. He sits there thoughfully for a few moments, then speaks up. "Do any ah ya know tha spell tha can locate objects? Having that handy may be a good way ta find any merchants that have da rubies."

After that Setanos goes to his room and prays. He then gets the money from the catacombs and gives it to Kiriana.

Sarigar and Black Paws
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 9:36:28 AM

Since 2 hours sounded like a pretty short time to him, Sarigar simply hangs out near the temple, trying to find the most open and least crowded area he can find that's still within sight of the meeting place.

Renik
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 2:41:28 PM

With only a couple of hours left Renik does a careful inventory of his items, sharpens his blades and then spends the remaining hour luxuriating in a hot bath, carefully shaving, and oiling his diminutive goattee. He may as well pamper himself, he reasons. It's likely to be the last chance he gets for a while. Why are all their missions of late across country, in godforsaken rural hamlets or dank and smelly dungeons? Would it hurt to infiltrate a masked ball? Rescue a charming (and well proportioned) damsel from a luxuary villa? Gather information amonst the beautiful and well heeled at exclusive nightspots in the grandest cities in the land?

No, he reflects, there'll be dust, and more dust, and halfling beds. How is he supposed to maintain his appearance in such circumstances?

He emerges to join the others grumbling to himself about how life as a secret agent isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Gaxx
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 6:50:05 PM

Gaxx quickly gathers all of his possessions together, packs them into his backpack and prepares to leave. ONce he is certain he is ready, he pulls out his money pouch and carefully counts his coins. He puts aside 250 gold coins then places the few remaining coins back in his pouch. He takes the 250 gold coins to the Temple of Wardd and makes a donation in the name of good luck, which he figures he and his new friends will need a great deal of. When he's done praying, he returns to the Temple of Domi and waits for the others.

(Does the group qualify for the Mendicant Everyone's Friend now?)

Feng
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 6:57:00 PM

Feng spends the two hours preparing his gear and praying to the gods. He makes sure that everything is clean and secured. That he had enough rations in case things went bad. After that he prayed, not to one god, but all of them.

Draax
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 7:34:09 PM

Draax spends the time polishing his armor and weapons. He also oils his bow strings and the inside of his scabbard and sheaths.

Tratain
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 11:39:53 PM

Tratain Repacks his gear while waiting for the others at the Temple.

He asks Kiriana before they leave "Does the bard we look for have an object that he carries with him that is somewhat unique that I can use magics to search for? If you can describe it for me well enough for the spells to work it may shorten our search a little."

Ready to depart? - DM Marcin
Thursday July 29th, 2004 3:13:34 AM

Setanos is off to pray. When he is done, the warrior of Domi tries to seek out Kiriana to deliver her his gold, but instead is directed to Hagemenes. The old man seems to be an early bird and Setanos finds him already up, with a mug of coffee in hand. The Assistant Treasurer accepts the bag of coins without unnecessary formalities [2115 gold, right?], and makes a note that the remaining sum to be returned to the Temple's Treasury amounts now to 2135 gold.

Sarigar and Black Paws spend their time in the tomato garden behind the Temple. Several of the younger acolytes are there pulling out weeds. The Temple believes that manual labor is an important part of the education of a cleric-in-training.

Draax, Tratain, and Renik do an equipment check and find everything to their satisfaction. Later on Renik takes a bath and allows himself the luxury of complaining about his life.

Gaxx soon returns from the Temple of Wardd. His donation has been accepted by the resident cleric.

[OK folks, listen up: the Mendicant ability Jim is talking about runs as follows: "All creatures within very close range (5 ft. per level) who honestly wish the Mendicant well and want to be his friend receive a +1 luck bonus on all attacks, saves, and skill checks." I guess we'll do that on a case-by-case basis. If you feel that your character wishes Gaxx well and wants to be Gaxx's friend then you can take the bonus. Just remember it is your job to keep track of it.]

In less than two hours the party gathers in the main hall and is soon joined by Kiriana and a pair of gnomes. Both wear ornate robes that scream out: "I'm a mage!" One is short, even for a gnome, and, judging by his wrinkles, must be really ancient. Spectacles on his nose are as thick as bottoms of beer mugs. His blue garment is adorned with pictograms of various celestial constellations. His companion looks very young, at least by gnome standards. A pair of blue eyes, barely visible from under his mane of red hair, constantly glances around with curiosity. His yellow robe is decorated with embroidered unicorns. The youth is chewing on an apple. Despite the difference in age the two look somewhat alike, as if they were related. But then again, you can never tell with gnomes. To some they all look the same.

"This is Matthias Bottleneck, our resident wizard, and his apprentice Bolthomas."

The old wizard smiles gently and bows slightly. His eyes glance over the party, staying for longer only on purple Gaxx. His student grins and says: "Call me Boltom!"

"Matthias is the most close-mouthed wizard I have ever met." - continues Kiriana. "There are days I wish most of my clerics were like him. Boltommy, on the other hand, makes it up for both of them."

"Thank yew, Lady! And praised be Domi for giving some in such abundance what others lack, so that they can share-"

"Maybe you will share later. We have business to attend to."

Kiriana hands the party a bone comb, a silk handkerchief with monogrammed R.B., and a small, plush, stuffed toy dog. "All that belonged to Rhiad. I don't know if any of these items still hold his smell. Maybe the hanky."

"An item you might try to track him by?"

"He was carrying a harp, though I suspect there are quite a few in Angel Springs..."

"Your best bet, I think, would be trying to locate a Periapt of Health. This item is rather expensive. I don't think there are more than five in Angel Springs."

"Before you go - I almost forgot." Kiriana pulls a folded page of paper out of her robe and hands it to the party. "This letter has been dropped off at our Temple two weeks ago by an unknown messenger. I guess it is addressed to you."

The parchment is sealed with a lump of dark wax without any marks on it. Somebody wrote on the outside with black ink:

Temple of Domi
Plateau City
Attn: The group who used to follow Marcus.

"I will be interested later on to learn how somebody made a connection between Marcus, the Temple, and you. But right now we have more important things to do. Good luck and good hunting. Matthias?"

"Right!" - says Boltommy. "Granddad did scrying on this Angel Springs and is ready to teleport you to a spot just outside of the city. We will need to do that in two goes, as he can take only five other people with him at one time. I hope you will have more luck than the previous group whom he left off in the middle of nowh-"

The older gnome puts his hand over the mouth of his assistant and motions for the party to stand in a circle holding hands.

Arien
Thursday July 29th, 2004 3:32:29 AM

Arien steps forward and offers out his hands, ready to be teleported.

Setanos
Thursday July 29th, 2004 8:07:24 AM

Setanos nods to the gnome out of respect. At the mention of the letter he pauses. "I'm thinkin we should be having a look at tha note 'fore we go. There may be things in there we'd want ta tell ya, and if we look after we go, we wont be able ta."

He does not join the circle until the matter of the letter is addressed.

Sarigar and Black Paws
Thursday July 29th, 2004 8:24:23 AM

Sarigar uncerrimoniously snatches the hankerchief, and immediately puts it to his nose. He sniffs at it for several moments and then bends down, scratches Black paws under the chin, and puts it before his nose as well. "New prey, sniff him out good."

Satisfied they both have a good record of Rhiad's scent, he steps over and awaits transportation.

Renik
Thursday July 29th, 2004 8:58:24 AM

"I agree Setanos. Better safe than sorry." Before the mages weave their magics the rogue moves away from the others (in case the letter is trapped somehow) and opens it, reading it carefully. If appropriate in current company he will then repeat its contents to the others.

Feng
Thursday July 29th, 2004 7:27:32 PM

"It's a pleasure to meet the both of you." Feng says as he steps forward next to the others.

Draax
Thursday July 29th, 2004 7:30:02 PM

Not sure what will be waiting for them, Draax prepares himself to react at the slightest sign of danger. After hearing Setanos and Renik concerns about the letter, he lets himself relax and waits to hear what the message says.

Tratain
Friday July 30th, 2004 12:28:37 AM

Tratain waits with the others to see whats written in the letter.

The Letter - DM Marcin
Friday July 30th, 2004 2:12:19 AM

Sarigar and Black Paws familiarize themselves with the smell of their quarry. There is a hint of flowery perfumes on the small piece of silk as well as traces of heavy odor of alcohol. There is also an unmistakable smell of a young, healthy human.

Renik breaks the seal, opens the letter, and is relieved when his precautions turn out to be unnecessary.

About half of the page of paper is filled with tidy handwriting in black ink.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Do forgive me for writing you an anonymous letter. I am an old friend of the late Marcus. For the last few years my association with him was not only personal, but also professional. It was during one of our common projects that I learned about your existence, though I must admit that Marcus never revealed more details about you than he absolutely had to.

Now, after more than twenty years of work, I decided to retire from my old job and pursue other goals. I am right now associated with a very fine band of seasoned explorers. We are preparing a journey to an exotic and dangerous place. You will be pleased to learn that, aside from being a promise of high adventure and great riches, this voyage also serves to further a noble cause.

Given your reputation and previous achievements, after careful deliberation, we decided to extend to you an invitation to join our group on this dangerous journey. Should you be interested in learning more details please find me within a month of the date of delivery of this letter.

I am deliberately not including my name or any other details that would make the task of locating me easier, as tracking me down is a little test we took the liberty of putting you through. I am certain that your resourcefulness and skill will make this task easy.

I hope to see you soon and talk with you in person. I wish you good luck and remain

Very Truly Yours,
Prospective Partner.

The gnome wizard patiently waits for the party to announce they are ready to depart.

[Post multiple times over weekend if you like.]

Renik
Friday July 30th, 2004 12:35:47 PM

The rogue arches a carefully plucked eyebrow. "An intriguing proposition. Curious though... something about this letter does not quite ring true with me."

He scans the letter once more, then stands quietly, thinking. "I don't suppose..." he murmurs. "Sarigar, the scent on this letter doesn't by any chance match that on the belongings of our quarry, does it?"

"Anyway, even if the letter is genuine, we have a job to do before we can even consider further work. What do you say?" he asks of his companions.

Clarification - DM Marcin
Friday July 30th, 2004 5:32:37 PM

The described collection of aromas can be found on Rhiad's handkerchief, not on the letter.

Gaxx
Sunday August 1st, 2004 9:34:56 AM

Gaxx, not really having any idea what's going on, waits patiently to be teleported. He does stare back at the old gnome when the gnome is checking him out. Gaxx grins in a friendly manner and waves at the old gnome.

Draax
Sunday August 1st, 2004 1:24:06 PM

Draax has no idea what to make of the letter, "This could as easily be trap as it could be legitimate. Nothing in the letter really gives us any indication of friend or foe other than the so-called invitation. Those of us that have worked for Marcus for a while have made a few enemies that I am sure know of our relationship with Marcus. I think we should concentrate on one thing at our time and our currently mission takes precedence. If we make it back alive I think we might covertly contact the Baron Balantyne to see if he has a lead on our mysterious admirer unless the priestess could offer us a clue. Tratain says "Does anyone have any idea who could have sent that message? Lady Kiriana? Do you have any ideas? Did Marcus keep any journals we could look through? Or have any companions he was close with that could give us any idea as to who sent the message?
