Together Again

DM Kathy
Wednesday July 7th, 2004 11:27:13 PM

In Town:

A cart and mule can be procured with little trouble. Hitching up and driving the beastie may be another matter--does anyone have ranks in Handle Animal?

As you head out of the city, you have the opportunity to chat with your new friend.

In the Country:

"Oh, bother!" cries the young man as his hat is swept away. He stops his mount. "Get that for me, would you, Dawkins?"

One of the footmen rolls his eyes and moves to retrieve the hat.

Arm describes his earlier encounter with the men as he, Mira, and Evan make their way to the meeting site.

The group meets as planned and begins to discuss strategy....

Mira
Thursday July 8th, 2004 12:14:53 AM

Back at the inn Mira lets off a little steam. Red faced she vents, "I can't believe I botched that Sleep Spell! Aaargh! It's worse than stumbling in the alley pretending to be quiet, or trying to ride Ariel!" Mira's eyes are glassy with unshed tears of frustration as she remembers her failures.

"I feel we are no closer to helping Avendri, and yet after meeting those two nice servants back at the manor, I'm not sure I want to go on with this fiasco!" says Mira as she continues to vent. She ponders blasting a big old Magic Missile into the wall of the inn, but remembers what happened to Kethlorn when a mage gave in to his frustration, and she checks herself.

"Two pitchers of ale, and three mugs" calls the woman to the server, not caring who hears her or who is looking.

Arm
Thursday July 8th, 2004 6:08:06 AM

Arm chuckles at Mira's frustration and says, "Ease thy mind, lass...we all have our off days. But I feel I must agree with you...I feel there is DEFINITELY much that we do not know about our assignment that we should, and I also fear that we may be working for the "wrong side", if you will, and the incident with the foppish rider and his group have only compounded things more. I think we need to head back with Conner when he arrives, and then decide where to go from there...who knows what THEY'VE encountered by now as well...".

Kadaz  d20+2=17
Thursday July 8th, 2004 8:02:08 AM

Kadaz will try his hands at the reigns of the mule cart. After all how hard can it be? (handle animal check 17)

On the way he chats with Wilfire Ironhouse. "As you know, I am Kadaz. I was born in Plateau City and, after my parents were killed, taken in by a sergeant of the guards. How about you? Where are you from? And you indicated you used to fight a lot? And what made you decide to switch to being a cleric?"

Evan
Thursday July 8th, 2004 6:52:53 PM

Evan leans back in his chair and lets Mira have her rant. But when her fingers start twitching like she's wanting to cast a spell at something, Evan reaches over and takes Mira's hands in his and just holds them, gently. His eyes rove over Mira's face as Evan realizes that Mira is even more lovely when she is angry than when she is not. As he can offer no words of comfort, Evan will instead, gently rub the ball of his thumb over the palm of Mira's hand and along her wrist. While he will certainly join Mira in a mug or two, he will make a point of staying sober enough to get Mira safely to bed once she passes out if that is indeed her goal for the evening.

Uriel
Thursday July 8th, 2004 7:54:39 PM

"I am happy to have a healer with us. We could really use someone with more skills than I," Uriel says.

Uriel then goes to relay the story thus far to catch the priest up on events.

Conner
Thursday July 8th, 2004 8:24:20 PM

Conner loads his gear into the wagon along with some provisions and then dashes into Sampson's from where he emerges in a moment with several bottles of beer and a wheel of cheese. If Amy is present he will tell her that they will be back soon and will give her a smile and a wave as the wagon begins it's journey.

"Thought we might need some refreshments for the trip" he smiles and jumps into the cart. He is more than happy to let Kadaz take the reins. The tattooed fighter spends time chatting with Wilfire about Avandri, their task, and his doubts about their mission. He also fills the cleric in on Mira, Evan and Arm and their masquerade. After a while Conner lets out a load yawn and lays back, head on his pack, "Never pass up the chance for a nap" he intones, "you never know when you'll next get the opportunity." With that the fighter closes his eyes and drifts off.

DM Kathy
Thursday July 8th, 2004 11:52:50 PM

Arm, Mira, and Evan make it to the inn and discuss the case, their frustration, and what the next step should be.

Kadaz finds himself able to drive the mule well enough, and he, Conner, and Uriel fill Wilfire in on the mission so far. You arrive at the inn without incident.

The fare at the inn, incidentally, is good and plentiful but not especially grand. Tonight's offering is savory pigeon pie, with plenty of fresh-baked bread and freshly churned butter. The wine is very good; the ale somewhat less so.

Uriel
Friday July 9th, 2004 8:31:05 AM

{Did we meet up with the others or are we there at different times?}

Wilfire Ironhouse
Friday July 9th, 2004 9:39:24 AM

OOC: i had a 14 hour flight last night due to a business trip, so I couldn't post yesterday. Moreover, I don't have my character sheet with me so I might have some trouble remembering specifics.

IC:
During the journey Wilfire is speaks openly about his past, and recent journey to Plateau City.

"I was a lost soul", he explained to Kadaz. "My emptiness consumed me and so I sought refuge in the drink. Worse yet I was angry. I wanted nothing more than to punish the world for all of my misfortune, and so I lashed out with violence. Those were my darkest days, but even in the dark I heard the calling... the calling of the cloth."

"Yet unlike many who have taken up the calling, I know my spirit was never meant to be bottled up inside a church or temple. No..no... not me. Those priests are the extension of the minds of the Gods, but I am an extension of their fists."

Wilfire continues talking all the way to the inn, prooving to be more warm-hearted then his initial impression hinted.

"Friends, shall we go inside?"

Kadaz (17/21)
Friday July 9th, 2004 10:41:01 AM

On the trip to the inn Kadaz asks "Wilfire, my wounds from our last battle haven't completely healed. Could you look at them and tell me what I should do?" He explains that they didn't rest the day after the battle but instead continued their investigation. And the trip by mule cart over the bumpy roads isn't exactly the most restful experience.

"And if you could, how are Uriel and Conner?"

On the trip Birdie sits by Kadaz up front, alertly watching everything. The countryside has a wide range of new smells that are extremely interesting. Occasionally Birdie jumps down to investigate something beside the road or just to chase a rabbit. But he quickly returns to Kadaz, tail wagging.

Once at the inn Kadaz will listen intently to the others and what they have discovered. There is clearly more going on here than what they had been led to believe.

DM Kathy
Friday July 9th, 2004 10:50:18 AM

[Yes, you meet up at the same time. Feel free to multi-post this weekend.]

Conner  d20+3=17
Friday July 9th, 2004 8:33:47 PM

Conner wakes up when the cart finally comes to a stop outside the Inn. Well rested and just a little bit hungry from the trip the fighter alights from the cart and enters the Inn. On spotting Mira and the others he takes a table next to them and does not make immediate contact until he has scanned the bar for nosey-parkers [Spot=17]. When he is satisfied that they are not under surveillance he speaks in a low voice, still not making direct eye contact, "Any luck?" he asks.

Mira
Sunday July 11th, 2004 11:16:02 AM

Mira enjoys a couple of mugs of cold brew. They go down easily after the dusty return trek from the estate. Venting with her friends allows her to decompress somewhat. When Conner, Uriel, and Kadaz show up with the new guy, she makes introductions. If the dwarf has been accepted by the others, she will accept him too. Besides, the party desperately needs someone skilled in the healing arts.

Mira will let Arm tell of their discoveries or lack thereof. She in turn will tell of what happened when she and Evan met the lady of the estate. She will describe the appearance of the individuals, so that should they encounter them again, the others might recognize them.

"Do you think we should keep up the pretense of disguise?" asks Mira of the others. She twists the simple band on the ring finger of her left hand, but doesn't take it off. When Evan takes her hand, she doesn't pull it away.

Evan
Sunday July 11th, 2004 7:34:24 PM

Evan nods in greeting to the new dwarf but lets Mira make the introductions for him. He listens, sipping at an ale while the others discuss what has occured so far, signing to Mira any details that may have been forgotten. He notices Mira fidgetting with the ring but is content to just hold her hand. With the addition of the dwarf to the group, he wonders how the sleeping arrangements will be handled now. Will the new man be moving in with him or would he prefer to room with Kadaz? Although, at the moment, everyone's thoughts seem to be on what occurred.

Considering what Arm told them and what happened on the road earlier, it might be prudent to set up a watch on the estate just in case they can be in a position to throw a monkey wrench into whatever is going to occur there. Evan signs this suggestion to Mira despite the fact that what he would really like to do is take Mira upstairs and comfort her in a more private setting.

Uriel
Monday July 12th, 2004 12:36:32 AM

To Mira, Uriel "I don't think the same disguise will work. However, we need to be very careful. Even if the fops that you ran into weren't playing for keeps, someone out there is playing to win."

DM Kathy
Monday July 12th, 2004 12:43:02 AM

The group meets and exchanges introductions. The facts are laid out.

--A group of thugs, presumably paid by somebody, attacked the group in town. They were found in posession of a coin that couldn't have been minted for decades.

--The estate has had a series of break-ins which have put the inhabitants on edge.

--Jarvis and his crew apparently want Sarla for some reason.

What does all this mean? Is it significant that Avandri is sweet and kind, while Sarla is brusque and short-tempered? And what should the party do next?

Wilfire Ironhouse  d20=7 d8=7
Monday July 12th, 2004 1:14:17 AM

Prior to arriving at the inn Wilfire will take a closer look at Kadaz's wound (7... Healing check?) and if he deems that a curing spell will help, he will burn enlarge for cure light wounds (7+1=8).

Once at the inn, Wilfire will greet everyone warmly and then sit back and observe thoughtfully, in an attempt to get a better feel for his comrades.

Arm
Monday July 12th, 2004 7:28:28 AM

Arm welcomes the rest of the party with gusto, and introduces himself to the newcomer, "Welcome to our group, my friend, as any friend of the rest is a friend of mine!".

He goes on to describe the events that have transpired since they were last together, adding his own doubts and suspicions at the end of the conversation, "With every passing moment, I feel that we are either not being told the whole story, being told half-truths, or NO truths at all. I agree that it's a good idea to keep watch on the estate, but I ALSO think we should keep a weather eye on Avandri as well...something just doesn't seem right about this whole situation, and I think we should cover EVERY option before deciding what to do next.".

Mira
Monday July 12th, 2004 5:54:21 PM

"Recon the estate again, or head back for town, I don't think we should split up" volunteers Mira.

Evan
Monday July 12th, 2004 7:57:32 PM

Evan is disappointed when it is suggested that they give up their masquerade as a married couple. The thought of Mira as his wife, even as a pretend wife, gave Evan a very warm feeling inside.

Evan signs to Mira, again suggesting that they watch the estate tonight. Perhaps they will be able to catch the burglars in the act.

Conner
Monday July 12th, 2004 8:28:58 PM

The tattooed fighter remains quiet for some time, listening to the suggestions that each has to make. Finally, after considerable thought he ventures an opinion. "Seems like both Avandri and Sarla aren't quite who they seem. Maybe this Jarvis fool knows more." Conner finishes his ale and signals the barmaid for a second. "Maybe we should ask Jarvis...What if we go visit the area with the cart and when he stops us to search the cart we surprise him." Conner smiles at the thought of turning the tables on the fop that Mira and Arm have described.

Uriel
Monday July 12th, 2004 9:06:22 PM

"That is a good idea Conner. We could also set up a surveillance on Avandri. When we talked to her, she seemed a bit strange about the ambush, too nonchalant."

Mira
Monday July 12th, 2004 9:49:49 PM

"I still have a little magic left," says Mira, as she winks at Evan. "So, everyone up for a night time stroll?"

DM Kathy
Monday July 12th, 2004 9:52:57 PM

The group talks about watching the estate, watching Avandri, and speaking to Jarvis. Which of these, if any, will they do tonight?

There are rooms available at this inn, if you decide to stay here tonight.

Mira  d20+3=11
Monday July 12th, 2004 10:11:44 PM

"Since we're in the area, how about heading back towards the estate together? If we run into this Jarvis idiot again, you guys" Mira nods to Uriel, Kadaz, and Conner, "can shake him up a little. See if he'll talk." Mira smiles, evilly, but her eyes dance merrily, as she adds, "if you rough him up too badly, our new friend here, can fix him up, eh Wilf? Is it okay if I call you Wilf?"

"If we don't encounter him, we can proceed to the estate. If it gets too late, we can always camp out." After a pause, Mira adds, looking at Arm and Evan, "Hey! Did you see which way he was heading when he left us? Was he going towards the estate?" Mira will try to remember if Jarvis and his men were heading in the direction of Sarla's estate.*

*(OOC: Didn't know what to roll for 'Remember' so rolled d20+3 (INT)=11. Didn't do very well. Must be the ale!)

Arm
Tuesday July 13th, 2004 6:01:10 AM

Arm agrees with Mira, "Aye, we should at the least watch the estate for this evening, then perhaps head back tomorrow depending on what transpires overnight. I believe that Jarvis was headed away from the estate, but I cannot be sure now...that matters not, for he can be anywhere at this moment. What say you all?".

Wilfire Ironhouse
Tuesday July 13th, 2004 10:56:14 AM

"Wilf is fine", the red haired dwarf says. "And yes, I can heal him if we have to rough him up a little."

After listening to whatever everyone else has to say Wilfire asks, "So to the estate then?"

Evan  d20+6=24
Tuesday July 13th, 2004 5:33:50 PM

As Evan has made his suggestion twice, he sees no need to repeat himself. He happily takes Mira's hand and leads her out to the cart. Perhaps the disguise has been seen through and perhaps not but if they abandon the charade, it could cause more harm than good. Also, the wagon will give them an excuse to set up a camp nearby, much like poor itinerate workers would.

Once they find a suitable spot to set up a camp, preferably well off the road in a copse of woods, Evan will sign to Mira that he is going to do a little recon. Evan will make his way to Sarla's estate, moving as quietly and as well hidden as possible. Then he will circle the estate, staying off the property, reading the sign of those who have passed onto the property over the last week or so. (track-24)

Mira
Tuesday July 13th, 2004 7:45:21 PM

As the party exit the tavern Mira elaborates on a thought she had. "I can't remember which direction Jarvis was heading, but if he went towards the estate, who knows what might have happended." The sorcerer signs to Evan, but speaks her ideas aloud for the benefit of the other's. "If he is a spurned lover, who knows what he might do to press his suit with the lady of the estate!"

Mira then signs to Evan, Did you remember to pack the tent and the sleeping bag we won at the Giggling Ghost Winter Solstice party?"

DM Kathy
Tuesday July 13th, 2004 10:11:10 PM

After talking it over, the group agrees to try to watch the estate tonight. Accordingly, you head out after your meal.

It is very nearly dark by the time you leave the inn, and full dark by the time you reach the edge of the estate. You camp as best as you can, then Evan leaves to scout around the estate.

(Evan, make Hide and Move Silently rolls as well.)

It is difficult to see much by starlight, but Evan thinks he finds a spot where somebody may have climbed the wall. It might be worth examining in full light.

Do you all watch all night, or what sort of watch do you set up?

Conner  d20+3=18 d20+2=16
Wednesday July 14th, 2004 7:59:44 AM

Conner takes first watch and suggests they work in pairs. "It would be better if those with better night vision took the mid watches" he adds. The fighter scouts the area for a good vantage point and sets himself up for the first part of the night. [Spot=18, Listen=16]

Uriel  d20+4=17 d20+3=5
Wednesday July 14th, 2004 4:47:38 PM

"I will watch with you Conner," Uriel offers.

Uriel also secures rooms for the group at the inn and informs the others of the arrangements.

Mira  d20+5=10 d20+3=11 d20+2=14 d20+2=12
Wednesday July 14th, 2004 6:28:35 PM

Mira hangs out with Uriel and Conner for a while, waiting for Evan's return. The sorcerer is a little disconcerted that the ranger just pops off by himself, but she passes his message along to the others.

After declining Uriel's offer of a room at the inn, she retires to the little tent set up by the cart. When Evan comes back, if she isn't already asleep, she ignores him (Bluff=10) and pretends that she is.

The sorcerer wakes up early in the morning when the energy needed for her spells has been restored. She relieves whoever pulled the dawn watch, and gets a pot of water to boil for tea. As she goes about the morning routine she keeps her ears and eyes open. (Search-11, spot=14, Listen=12)

DM Kathy
Thursday July 15th, 2004 1:28:01 AM

Conner and Uriel take the first watch, and the estate seems quiet--although it's difficult to tell. Wycklea encompasses quite a bit of ground, and it's pretty dark.

When they are through, they awaken Kadaz and Wilfire, and the dwarves watch for the middle part of the night. They see better in the darkness, but they, too, find nothing out of the ordinary.

Come dawn, the dwarves awaken Mira and Arm, who can begin their daily spellcasting preparations as they watch. The estate awakens along with them, and soon there's more activity than any self-respecting thief would put up with. The estate seems secure for the day.

Conner
Thursday July 15th, 2004 8:10:33 AM

Conner wakes up with the sun and slowly stretches, easing the kinks that always accompany a night of sleeping on the ground. He helps set up a small breakfast and watches the activity inside the estate.

"This isn't getting us anywhere" he blurts out. "Maybe we should just talk straight out to this Sarla, get her side of the story."

Evan  d20+5=15 d20+7=23
Thursday July 15th, 2004 7:16:25 PM

(hide- 15; move silent-23)

Evan returns to camp as quickly as he can but he wanted to get out there and read the sign before it was marred. He seems a little surprised when he returns to camp and discovers Mira asleep already. Kadaz and the new guy are on watch when Evan silently returns to camp.

Wilfire Ironhouse
Thursday July 15th, 2004 8:26:17 PM

When morning comes Wilfire moves to a quiet and comfortable place to begin his morning prayers. When his prayers are completed he will sit down and take breakfast with the others, listening to all they have to say, but offering little advice for now.

Uriel
Thursday July 15th, 2004 8:45:08 PM

Uriel shrugs, "If you think she will see us. We could also still look into the bard angle in the town or do some other investigation with the magistrates.

Mira
Thursday July 15th, 2004 10:00:02 PM

Mira nods her head at Conner's suggestion. "You're right. Our plans thus far have not proved very successful."

When Uriel suggests something else, Mira asks, "can you elaborate on that? Do you think we should return to Plateau City?"

DM Kathy
Friday July 16th, 2004 2:24:05 AM

The next morning, the group discusses possibilities. They could confront Sarla directly, or return to Plateau City for more research. There's also the possibility of investigating in the daylight the tracks Evan found last night.

And should the group split up again, or stay together?

[Feel free to multi-post over the weekend]

Arm - OOC
Friday July 16th, 2004 10:48:16 AM

Sorry guys for being MIA...I've been in the hospital since Wed. morning...I'll pick up next week...again...VERY sorry!!! :)

Wilfire Ironhouse
Saturday July 17th, 2004 11:38:55 AM

The red haired dwarf sits back and listens closely for quite some time before he finally speaks up.

"Since I do not know this Sarla I volunteer to check out the tracks. Perhaps if there is one that is good at tracking they would like to accompany me?"

"At the same time, perhaps a few of you could confront Sarla, and then we could meet at the inn in a few hours."

Shadow
Saturday July 17th, 2004 5:31:19 PM

After resting, Shadow turns to Devryn, "Well let's have a look at this estate." With that Shadow will venture quietly and quickly out of the campsite and towards where Devryn says the estate is. He will only let Devryn lead until the estate is in sight.

Once the estate is in view, "So, where did you go over the wall?" Shadow will scan the area while he waits for Devryn to answer.

Kadaz
Sunday July 18th, 2004 4:10:06 PM

During his watch Kadaz ran over and over what they had learned about Sarla, Avandri, and the situation. There are some very interesting discrepancies here he thinks to himself.

At daybreak, as Wilf prays, Kadaz pulls out the journal and adds to it what Arm, Mira and Evan learned. He hands it to Mira. "Mira, here is a record I've been keeping. Can you think of anything to add?

"Today I think we should follow the footprints Evan found. Who else is watching?

"Then we need to track down Jarvis. Avandri said he led Sarla astray. But from your description Jarvis seems quite ineffectual, and Sarla not the type to follow this guy. Something is quite wrong in the descriptions we got from Avandri. I bet he will spill his guts if a bard sings a heroic song about him and a pretty girl bats her eyelashes at him."

(OOC: Kadaz's journal on line at:
http://www.geocities.com/jeff+hoffman/KadazLog

Mira
Sunday July 18th, 2004 5:12:58 PM

Mira reads the journal entries kept by Kadaz. She raises an eyebrow, for they are very neat and well organized. Pointing at the description of Jarvis, she adds, "he had dark hair and was wearing this ludicrous feathered hat." She provides whatever other information that will helf the others identify him should they encounter him again.

"What concerns me the most, is that the servants seem devoted to thier mistress. This would seem unlikely given Avendri's accounting of things."

Mira removes her glasses and polishes them with the hem of her skirt. She frowns, unseeing and confused. Heaving a sigh, she agrees that checking out the tracks is a good idea.

Conner
Sunday July 18th, 2004 10:17:01 PM

"I think Kadaz is right" Conner nods in acknowledgement to the former city guard. "Let's look to these tracks...do they come or go. I suspect they may do both and that someone in the estate has reason for their passage to go unnoticed."

Uriel
Monday July 19th, 2004 12:01:08 AM

"I like the idea of appealing to the vanity of this Jarvis character with a bard's tale," Uriel comments.

Uriel also asks,"What kind of tracks did they appear to be? And how old?" to Evan.

DM Kathy
Monday July 19th, 2004 12:41:05 AM

There are many things to be tried, including a conversation with Jarvis, and possibly confrontations of Sarla and Avandri. First, though, the party moves to examine the tracks in daylight. (Right? If this is wrong, let me know.)

At about the same time, Devryn leads Shadow to show him where he scaled the wall.

This could get interesting. :) All parties please make appropriate skill checks.

"Normally I'm in front but I have no idea how to follow these tracks. Evan, I will follow you." Kadaz takes up the 2nd place, watching the surroundings for threats. Arm (By ADM Brent)
Monday July 19th, 2004 10:35:52 PM

"I would love to persuade Jarvis with flowery words, prickling with barbed innuendos," Arm exclaims. He follows the others as they move along the tracks.

Arm ponders the task at hand, speaking to himself while he follows along with the others,"How to make that monumental fop into a grand character?Hmmm..." His voice lowers to a bare whisper and he chuckles a bit.

He is not oblivious to his surroundings, only caught up in the challange.

Uriel
Monday July 19th, 2004 10:37:55 PM

Uriel signs again to Evan, " Do you know want kind of tracks they were, or how old they were?"

He has his shield out and his longsword as they skirt the outer perimeter of the estate. He is clearly uneasy, but if asked, he is noncommital in his response.

Evan examines the tracks. They all appear to belong to the same person, a shod humanoid of about 160 pounds. The tracks enter and leave the estate at this point, twice. The most recent set is several days old.

As Evan looks, Mira thinks she may have had a glimpse of movement. She knows she heard something; the sound of somebody moving nearby.

As Devryn and Shadow approach the estate wall, Devryn signals a halt and crouches down to hide. He's seen something up ahead.

[For anybody that might be confused, Shadow is Scott's character, the one I e-mailed everybody about a few weeks ago. Devryn is an NPC. He and Shadow are by themselves, but in the same general area as the rest of the group.]

Moving as silently as possible and attempting to remain hidden, Evan follows the tracks to see where they lead, his senses alert as he moves.

Mira tenses and signals the others. The sorcerer jabs with her short spear and points in the direction of the sounds and movements.

She narrows her focus and searches for whatever is hiding from her (Search=22, bingo!) as she creeps up (Move Silently=16) on it. Pointing towards 'it' she holds a finger up to her lips to signal the others to be quiet.

(OOC: Do you think Mira ought to change classes?)

Arm continues to elaborate quietly on the means to dupe Jarvis. He stops as Mira pulls up and begins hand signalling.

He takes a look around {Spot:8 Listen:15 sorry I gave him Uriel's skill stats!} but doesn't see anything.

He does pull out his crossbow and gets it ready to shoot if there is trouble.

Uriel nods to Evan after he signs.

DM Kathy
Wednesday July 21st, 2004 1:10:38 AM

Devryn stays where he is as Shadow creeps foward to investigate. He sees a few people--adventurers by the look of them. There's a fierce-looking human man with a black mohawk and many tattoos, a remarkably ugly dwarf, a tall, slender half-elf, and a handsome blond human. He does not see the bespectacled woman creeping up on him, nor does he notice the rather outdoorsy looking human until he begins climbing the wall.

They are evidently alert to something; the half-elf is loading a crossbow and the blond human has drawn his sword.

[I know Evan rolled a good Hide, but it's hard to remain hidden while climbing a wall.]

Mira, in her turn, sees two young men, one crouching motionless, the other moving stealthily up on the party.

On the other side of the wall, Evan sees that the tracks move in the general direction of the manor house.

Kadaz
Wednesday July 21st, 2004 7:24:17 AM

Unable to peer over the wall, Kadaz moves to put his back to it and watches over the nearby woods, axe in hand. Why is everything so green? he wonders to himself.

Mira  d4=1
Wednesday July 21st, 2004 7:52:27 AM

Mira drops her shortspear, and raises her hands straight out in front of her, fingers up and palms out, ready to cast. "Drop your weapons and show yourselves!" she calls out, adding, "Quickly now, or you'll be sorry!"

If either of the lurkers make an untoward move, Mira will loose Burning Hands for 1 pt fire dmg.

Shadow
Wednesday July 21st, 2004 9:46:13 AM

A little startled by the bespectacled young woman that was able to surprise him, Shadow reluctantly stands up showing his open hands and says, "I do not have a weapon drawn and my companion does not either." Shadow hopes that Devryn has enough sense not to draw a weapon when they are out numbered 5 to 2.

"We were just passing along here and heard the commotion by the wall, and were investigating. We mean no harm and will move along, now." Shadow waits for a response, but seems to be about to turn around (ready to move on just as he states).

Conner
Wednesday July 21st, 2004 8:14:24 PM

The fighter spins around at Mira's alarm and draws his sword in a single smooth action. Before he can move forward the intruder speaks and shows himself to be weaponless. Nonetheless, Conner remains vigilant, sword at the ready.

Arm (By ADM Brent)  d20+7=22
Wednesday July 21st, 2004 11:10:26 PM

Arm slowly lowers his crossbow but does not unload it. "Come now. We were investigating tracks that led to this area and now we find you here. It seems a bit too good for coincidence. Let's try to stay honest here. I am Armethen. And you friends, what do you go by?" (Diplomacy:22)

Uriel
Wednesday July 21st, 2004 11:11:49 PM

Uriel will not speak but he will sense evil to detect the unspoken intentions of these two.

If the results are negative, Uriel sheathes his sword as a gesture of peace.

DM Kathy
Thursday July 22nd, 2004 1:22:30 AM

Mira challenges the two strangers, and one, Shadow, stands and shows open hands. (Actually, you're outnumbered 6 to 2; I forgot to mention Wilfire! Sorry, Jeff!!)

Devryn, the other stranger, looks frantically behind him as though considering making a run for it, then apparantly thinks the better of it and stands sullenly, hands also empty.

Sensing the commotion, Evan comes back over the wall, and Conner also readies his weapon.

Uriel senses no outright evil about the pair, and therefore sheathes his weapon. Arm makes an effort at diplomacy.

"My name can mean nothing to you," Devryn replies. "Why are you investigating here? Are you in the pay of those thieves?"

The sudden appearance of two strangers out of the grass and trees greatly surprises Kadaz. How many more are lurking nearby? Kadaz grips his axe and tries to watch even more carefully, but as usual, this strange environment totally befuddles him. He wipes the nervous sweat off his face and tries to get a grip. (spot 3)

Birdie however is starting to get the hang of how being in the country. What a great place for a dog! (spot 18)

Shadow
Thursday July 22nd, 2004 3:15:15 PM

Not liking where the conversation is headed, with Devryn answering the way he did, Shadow turns back around. "There is no need for distrust here," he says as he looks over his shoulder at Devryn, "my name is Shadow and my companion is Devryn."

Turning back to the group, "You can see that we mean no harm to you, and we are investigating this area as well. My friend and I would like to know more about your relationship with the owners of the estate. We have a concern with those that reside at this estate, and are trying to solve a misdeed without any injury, especially to us." He turns to Devryn and winks to him, hoping that he will not say any more.

Mira  d20+5=16 d20+2=9

"Keep those hands up, and no funny business!" barks the mage, trying to sound tough. (Bluff=16) "Explain yourselves. Fifty words or less," she adds.

Mira notes the paladin replace his sword, but she is unable to get a vibe from the newcomers. (Sense Motive=9)

Conner
Thursday July 22nd, 2004 10:13:04 PM

Conner steps up beside Mira, his longsword hanging loosely from his hand, but ready nonetheless for any threat that may emerge. "And what misdeed might that be?" he asks the man. Conner spins his longsword with quick flexes of his massive forearms as he talks.

Uriel
Thursday July 22nd, 2004 11:09:31 PM

"They at least don't seem evil to me. I am willing to listen to their story," Uriel says to the group.

He moves closer to the others to help calm the nervous situation.

Arm (by ADM Brent)
Thursday July 22nd, 2004 11:13:41 PM

Arm sees his words succeeding so he continues, "We are investigating the heir of this estate. We have reason to suspect something unusual in the circumstances surrounding the inheritance of this villa."

"It is interesting that you mention thievery - why do you say that?" Arm looks at the others meaningfully while he speaks.

DM Kathy
Friday July 23rd, 2004 1:38:35 AM

"The so-called 'adventurer' who bought this estate was nothing more than a common thief!" Devryn cries passionately. "He stole something of great value from my village, and I am determined to recover it. It rightfully belongs to us, no matter what lies you may have been told."

He keeps his empty hands in view, but it is obvious that he feels strongly on this subject and may very well do something rash.

[Feel free to multi-post over the weekend; I'll try to respond as Devryn.]

Kadaz
Saturday July 24th, 2004 1:07:30 PM

Kadaz looks carefully at Devryn. "This adventurer retired about 30 years ago. And he is now dead. What makes you think what you claim was stolen is still in there. And what exactly was it?"

DM Kathy (Devryn)
Saturday July 24th, 2004 10:03:08 PM

"It-it's still there," Devryn insists, uncertainty creeping into his voice. "It must be. He didn't sell it or give it away; we've made inquiries. It's still there, and it belongs to my village!" He finishes much more strongly than he began.

Kadaz  d20+1=18
Sunday July 25th, 2004 9:10:21 AM

Wildfire Ironhouse  d20=19

Uriel
Sunday July 25th, 2004 9:31:38 PM

"It might be possible for you to recover the item, the adventurer has died, we are helping sort out some issues about the estate. Let's go sit at the inn and talk more," Uriel suggests.

The sorcerer crosses her arms over her chest, and putting one foot forward settles her weight on the other. She looks at the newcomers with a sceptical look (Sense Motive=11). "And what exactly is this 'item' you are looking for?" she asks, a stern tone creeping into her voice (Diplomacy=7).

Conner
Sunday July 25th, 2004 11:23:46 PM

Conner maintains his position, sword at the ready, still unsure of the two newcomers.

DM Kathy
Monday July 26th, 2004 12:22:12 AM

"I've never heard of it affecting people's behavior," Devryn replies, then adds, "but it is very powerful; who knows what effects it may have. Certainly the elders of the village did not fully understand its power until after it had been taken away."

"The item is a crystal sphere," Devryn says, demonstrating with his hands a space about the size of an orange. "It predicts the weather, and it--it--well...we don't really know what else it does, but our village hasn't been the same since it was taken."

"I know that he has died," Devryn replies to Uriel, "but it makes no difference. The globe is ours, and I intend to see it returned."

Kadaz thinks that Devryn would be considered an adult--although humans come of age appallingly early in life. He is, obviously, still young enough to be hot-headed, though.

Mira believes Devryn to be sincere.

"I will talk of this with you further if you like," he says in response to Uriel's invitation.

Arm
Monday July 26th, 2004 5:48:23 AM

Agreeing with Uriel, Arm replies, "Aye, let us relax at the inn and hear more of this "crystal sphere"...then we shall decide on whether to help you or not.".

Kadaz  d20+1=20
Monday July 26th, 2004 10:04:14 AM

Kadaz is reminded of the glass globes sometimes used to predict the weather. These colored globes are placed on stands outside. You operate one by touching it. If it's wet then it's raining. If hot, then sunny. If you hand stick to it then expect very cold weather. And if you can't see it at all then it's night.

Kadaz settles back to hear what Devryn has to say. He also looks very closely at Shadow, trying to figure out what profession this one follows. (spot 20)

Shadow
Monday July 26th, 2004 2:29:46 PM

Trying not to draw attention, Shadow slightly shakes his head as Devryn totally loses his composure.

Moving in front of Devryn, "The village has hired me to acquire this 'item', and I therefore need to do just that. If you are willing to help then by all means help us. Otherwise, please allow us to be on our way." With that Shadow waits, while the group decides what they are going to do. He will occasionally look at Devryn in hopes to catch his eye, and give him a look to 'be quiet'.

Evan  d20+7=11 d20+7=20
Monday July 26th, 2004 3:26:41 PM

Evan keeps watch on their surrounding while the others question the strangers. It would be mighty embarrassing to have Jarvis and his friends stumble upon them while they argue.

(listen-11, spot-20)

Conner
Monday July 26th, 2004 5:40:02 PM

"We too have business with this estate" Conner chimes in. "What have your inquiries revealed about the present owner Sarla and her sister Avandri? Perhaps our causes have something in Common". The fighter sheathes his sword as a show of good faith and hopes that they know something more about the two sisters.

Mira
Monday July 26th, 2004 7:29:05 PM

Sensing the newcomers' sincerity, Mira drops her defensive posture. None the less, she moves a little closer towards Evan, the ranger. She forms her hands and fingers in the intricate way she has learned, and signs to him, do you have any questions you would like me to ask them? She inclines her head in the direction of the two strangers as she communicates with the silent man.

Wilfire Ironhouse
Monday July 26th, 2004 8:16:18 PM

Wilfire's shoulders drop slightly when the mood of the encounter improves from one of borderline hostility to one of borderline helpfulness.

"Yes, let'us chat on it some moor", the dwarf says.

Uriel
Monday July 26th, 2004 11:25:52 PM

"Shall we go talk at the inn, then?" Uriel suggests again. "This isn't the most opportune place to discuss this."

DM Kathy
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 3:32:45 AM

Evan stays alert, but fortunately sees no sign of anyone coming. It is perhaps a bit early for Jarvis to be out and about.

Devryn agrees to accompany you to the inn. "I know little of Sarla or Avandri--but I believe they are cousins, not sisters," he explains as you make your way to the inn. "I did speak with 'Lady' Sarla when I first arrived in the area, and I must say she wasn't very receptive to our pleas. She was very cold, in fact, and ordered me off the property before I'd had half a chance to state my case. I have not met the cousin, although I do not believe she has the item."

Arm
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 8:55:08 AM

Noticing the similarities to their meeting with Sarla, he says to Devryn, "In our brief meeting with her, she was cold and distant to us as well. The gatekeeper told us that she cannot trust anyone as of late due to recent thefts. Perhaps we should compare notes and see where that takes us.".

Wilfire Ironhouse
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 9:19:20 AM

"That's usin your noggin", Wilfire says to Arm with a smile. "No sense lollygagging out here any longer. Back to the inn for some chitty chat".

If the others are ready to go Wilfire we follow along, closer to the rear of the party, since he isn't the quietest of fellows.

Kadaz
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 12:11:00 PM

"We came out here to look at a set of tracks. Are we convinced that these tracks belonged to Shadow or Devryn? If not then we need to look some more." Kadaz wants to tie up loose ends before going on.

Uriel
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 3:57:56 PM

"Kadaz, if we stay to look around, we may miss the opportunity to talk with our new friends," Uriel tries to give Kadaz a look.

Shadow
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 5:46:40 PM

Not sure of Devryn's loyalties, other than to himself and his village, Shadow none the less agrees to follow the group to the inn to 'chit chat'. He will be prepared to leave and return to the estate (he must fulfill his agreement, but is not sure how these others will react). He will make sure not to make a move towards anything the group might take as hostile, but will be very wary about what the group is doing.

He will see where Devryn's discussion takes them. He will try and keep the man from spilling everything about Shadow, but is not sure if the man will can keep his excitement down.

Conner  d20-2=12
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 7:17:13 PM

Conner follows the rest back to the Inn and tries to engage Devryn in conversation along the way. "Where is this village you hail from?" he asks. "You say your village has not been the same since the sphere was taken. In what ways is it altered?"

If conversation returns to the estate Conner will inquire about fortifications, the numbers of guards and their preparedness, and the number of servants within the compound.

[Gather Information = 12]

Mira  d20+4=14 d20+2=10
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 7:22:31 PM

Mira picks up her shortspear from where she dropped it and falls into step beside the others. She listens to Conner's questions and nods encouragingly at Devryn as he answers [Aid another / Gather information = 14]. The sorcerer takes in the details of the newcomers appearances [Spot=10].

Evan
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 7:56:45 PM

Evan places a hand on Kadaz's shoulder to stop him then before Mira can join the others, he quickly signs, I agree with Kadaz. We came out here to watch the estate and to learn something of the thefts that are taking place, yet you are willing to leave the moment someone interesting shows up. And want to return to the inn no less. Go to our camp if you must to talk with the newcomers but not all the way back to the inn. Kadaz and I will stay and keep watch. If we see something, Kadaz can return to fetch the rest of you while I keep an eye on things here until you catch up with me. If I have to follow our targets, I'll put out blazes so that you can follow me. He motions to Mira to tell the others what he said, not really wanting to berate them but to remind them of why they came here.

Uriel
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 10:09:38 PM

Uriel sighs at the hand sign from Evan. "We are not splitting the party up again, the last time we were on the brink of getting wiped out by an ambush. If a group of like sort attacked Evan and Kadaz, we would lose two friends. We should just stop here and talk, and if anyone else is nearby listening they will just hear everything, I suppose," Uriel looks agitated but very adamant.

DM Kathy
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 2:39:45 AM

Devryn stops and shrugs when the party seems to want to stay put. "The village is on the edge of the First Plateau," he replies to Conner. "Adventurers often stopped their on their way to and from the frontier. Not so much anymore, though." He sighs. "The elders tell us that things were better in the past, when we had the crystal sphere in the village. Summers were warmer, winters were less harsh, and crops were more abundant."

Mira (and Kadaz, too; I didn't respond to the earlier post) note that the strangers are wearing soft, flexible shoes--just the sort of thing for moving about undetected or scaling walls.

Arm
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 6:05:41 AM

Listening to Devryn, Arm replies, "So what makes you think that Sarla is the one who stole your orb? Gruff she may seem, but I can hardly picture her as a thief.".

Kadaz
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 7:33:56 AM

"Arm, I believe it was the grandfather, Daval, who went adventuring. And if he brought back any trophies then his granddaughters might now know their significance."

Kadaz pauses a moment and then excitedly drops his weapons and takes off his pack. He tears the pack open and pulls out the journal he has been keeping. "Wait, listen to this. Uriel found this information in the city: 'Wycklea only vineyard not damaged by a freak icestorm in early spring twenty five years ago. Wycklea vinters very canny in protecting vines from frost.' I wonder if this might actually be the effect of this crystal sphere?"

Kadaz considers the implications of this as he packs the journal away. "If there is a crystal sphere in there and it is helping improve the climate around Wycklea then removing it will hurt the profitability of the estate."

Wilfire
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 10:49:07 AM

"Listen friend", Wilfire begins. "If we're gonna get this thing back we need to know how it was taken from you in the first place? Did you see someone take it? Did you see how they did it? More importantly, how come your so sure its in the estate? I only ask because I'd hate you to go looking if it weren't even there."

Shadow
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 6:41:48 PM

Shadow will continue to see where this conversation is going, and because it seems that Devryn has become the spokesperson, he will just wait. While he waits, Shadow will inspect the group to determine what type of 'adventurers' they have run into.

Evan
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 7:00:06 PM

Evan decides to move away from the group and keep watch in case someone else comes along. But something Devryn says gets him to thinking. Evan taps Mira's wrist to get her attention and begins to sign. What if what Avandri really wants is the sphere and all this crap about the estate being stolen from her is subterfuge. From Sarla's actions, it certainly seems like she's afraid someone is going to steal the sphere from her. How long have these two been prowling around the estate? Long enough to have alerted Sarla?

Mira  d20+5=11
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 7:27:13 PM

Mira is quickly becoming confused. Some of the group wants to go back to the inn, and some to stay near the estate. (From her perspective, they are far less likely to be overheard in the great outdoors, than in a tavern or inn, where anyone can eavesdrop on them.)

Avandri wants the estate, and perceives it to have been stolen from her. Sarla has the respect of her servants, but appears to be selfishly and artificially controlling the climate around the estate (if indeed she possesses the artifact Devryn claims she has.) The artifact appears to belong to a village, but was stolen many years ago. Perhaps the people at the estate don't even know the provenance of their good fortune, if the original thief is now dead?

Mira tries to do a moral sort of what is good and what is bad in this whole situation. She wonders if the estate would even be contested if it was not profitable.

Besides, after such a long time, what claim did this Devryn and his people have on the artifact? What claim did anyone have on the artifact?

And, they had taken Avendri's money.

Turning to Devryn and Shadow, the mage is curt, (Diplomacy=11) "show us some proof that this artifact indeed belongs to your people."

Conner
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 8:49:02 PM

The fighter is beginning to warm to this curt newcomer. Devryn seems to wear his emotions on his sleeve and with that in mind he seems an honest type. "It seems to me that Kadaz has confirmed Devryn's suspicions, and perhaps answered some of our own nagging questions about Avandri and our quest." Conner steps up next to Shadow and Devryn before continuing, "I think we should join these two in a reconaissance of the estate and if we find this sphere we can liberate it and see just what reaction it garners from both Sarla and Avandri."

Uriel  d20+3=19
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 9:56:38 PM

{Mira, we were investigating tracks out here - we are not sure of their origin. Also there is some lame brain crazy nobleman running around - normally I would think the outdoors was better but not in this case. In any event, we are staying here}

Uriel shakes his head towards Kadaz, "Oh yeah, that writeup. How crazy."

He turns back to the rest of the group, "Let's keep this congenial. Tell us, if you mind the story passed down by your village about the artifact and how it was lost. If you can be specific in your description as to why you think the artifact is here, that will help us."

DM Kathy
Thursday July 29th, 2004 1:56:25 AM

"I was, of course, not yet born when the sphere was taken," Devryn says, mainly in response to Wilfire's query. "Everyone in my village knows the story though. A group of adventurers came through, and stayed a while. One of them, this Daval, took a fancy to the sphere and wanted to take it with him. When he left the village, he carried it away with him."

Devryn frowns. "The elders disagree on how this was accomplished. Some say he paid for the item, but a mere fraction of its true worth. Others say he hoodwinked the villagers into giving it to him. Still others say he must have cast some kind of spell."

"However it was accomplished, all who lived in the village at the time agree that Daval took the sphere with him when he left, and none in the village attempted to stop him. It wasn't until later that they realized what they had lost."

To Mira, he says, "The only proof I have is the testimony of the honest folk of my village, which I hope is sufficient for you. It certainly is for me."

He continues, "Shortly after passing through our village, Daval bought this estate and settled here. We have made extensive inquiries, but can find no record that he ever sold the sphere or gave it away. Logic dictates that it is most likely here."

Arm
Thursday July 29th, 2004 5:53:07 AM

After listening further to Devryn, Arm comes up with something, and voices it to the group, "Perhaps I, or WE, have misjudged Avandri...it is possible that she is aware of the sphere as well and, through some form of conscience, wishes to return it to their rightful owners...THAT is why she has been ostracized from the estate...I agree with Conner. Let us attempt to retrieve the orb and return to Avandri to see what comes of it.".

Kadaz
Thursday July 29th, 2004 8:33:26 AM

"Arm, I disagree. This group has always tried to do what is right. Our confusion is partly because we're not sure that Avandri is in the right and Sarla in the wrong. But sneaking into Wycklea and stealing the crystal ball would be wrong. I cannot support this without a great deal more information, such as proof that the ball was stolen and not bought. Or confirmation that Sarla has not treated Avandri fairly."

"Deveryn, I think the most ethical approach for you would be to openly approach Sarla and plead your case."

Kadaz is afraid this is quickly going to evolve into a discussion of the ethics of plundering, a very gray area at best.

Wilfire Ironhouse
Thursday July 29th, 2004 8:49:55 AM

"I agree with Kadaz. Let us get all of this out in the open and see if some type of peaceful agreement can be reached". Wilfire suggested.

But the word 'peace' seemed to come out so strangely when he said it... a hint on anxiousness perhaps?

Shadow
Thursday July 29th, 2004 1:39:11 PM

Shadow remains silent still waiting to see what Devryn and the group will decided. He will continue to observe each member of the group and try and determine who truly leads the group.

Uriel
Thursday July 29th, 2004 6:16:36 PM

"Deveryn has already tried and been rebuffed by the Sarla. I agree that we should consider other options than an unauthorized appropriation of the globe," Uriel says.

Uriel shrugs his shoulders, "I guess we need to try and get an audience with Sarla. Also, to discuss with her Avandri if the opportunity presents itself."

Mira
Thursday July 29th, 2004 7:23:33 PM

The mage heaves a big sigh, and sits down in the dust, her legs crossed under her tailor fashion and her shortspear resting across her knees.

Not looking at any of the party members or the newcomers, she traces a design like an 'S' or a stylized dragon in the dust as she speaks, "thus far, no one has been able to engage the lady in any type of dialogue. Perhaps if we were to go as a group, have the most diplomatic ones plead our case, and the others offer support, we could engage the lady's confidence?"

Mira erases her drawing, adding, "regardless, I am not one for creeping about and stealing."

"All I meant was that if we were in possession of the sphere it would draw out all the interested parties and we might be able to arrive at a solution. I did not want the sphere for myself and our endless deliberations seem to get us nowhere."

Conner is clearly frustrated by the lack of progress they have made towards solving the mysteries of Wycklea, Sarla and Avandri. He slumps down beside Mira and watches her draw in the dirt.

DM Kathy

Devryn frowns in concentration. "If you would be willing to assist me in getting an audience with Lady Sarla, that might be best. Perhaps some of you would be more eloquent in pleading your case than I was. And perhaps she will listen to those who, like her grandfather, are adventurers." He sighs. "At any rate, it's all I can think of at the moment. Shall we attempt it?"

Arm
Friday July 30th, 2004 5:56:35 AM

Arm snorts at Uriel as he idly watches Mira doodling in the dirt, "Good luck to you. She barely gave US the time of day when we attempted to meet with her...I doubt that you would get a different reception, as that seems to be the trend.".

To the group, he continues, "If the rest of you wish to attempt an audience with her, you're welcome to go, but as for Evan, Mira, and myself, I think it best that we remain behind, since we have just recently tried, and even though our meeting with her was brief, she still may remember us and that would HARDLY instill confidence in her OR help our situation any.". Saying so, he leans back against a tree and waits for the rest of the group's decision.

Shadow
Friday July 30th, 2004 10:14:16 AM

Shadow sighs and then leans forward, "If you are determined to meet with this Sarla, then I will join you, but know if negotiations fail I will acquire the globe for Devryn in my own means."

Shadow will wait for a response, full well knowing that what he has said is right, even though the group seems to feel differently.

Uriel
Friday July 30th, 2004 4:48:32 PM

"Arm, we can only try," Uriel holds his hands out.

Then Uriel turns and stares in Shadow's direction, "And what makes you so sure of the claim on this globe. I am willing to admit that it sounds feasible for the item to have come from the village. But we have heard nothing concrete that proves the globe came from the village under false pretense. I am also willing to admit that the village could have only made a mistake in selling the item, and later on the tale twisted. Making up your mind without having all the facts is dangerous, I have done it, to my own detriment in the past. Be careful."

Kadaz
Saturday July 31st, 2004 3:53:49 PM

Kadaz again adds his opinion. "Before we approach Sarla we should seek out Jarvis and determine why he has a grudge against her. Maybe he can provide us with useful information. When we decide it's time to talk with Sarla we should know as much as possible.

"I wonder if the owners of neighboring estates might have useful information? We'd need a good cover story. Maybe our most convincing members could say they represent a rich Plateau-City merchant looking to expand into the wine making business."

Shadow
Saturday July 31st, 2004 11:07:56 PM

"I do not have all the answers, but have been hired to do a job and will do it. I can only use the information that I have, but will listen if there is more. I know to some it seems wrong to steal, but is it not right if it rights a wrong or is for the greater good?" Shadow answers, but his voice starts to drop off a little as he takes in what he is saying. He is not sure if it really is the right thing, but wants to believe he was going to do the right thing.

He takes a very long look at Devryn trying to determine if he has been led astray or not.

Wilfire Ironhouse
Sunday August 1st, 2004 2:55:01 AM

Utterly confused Wilfire just listens quietly.

OOC: If anyone goes to see the lady Wilfire will accompany them.

Evan
Sunday August 1st, 2004 9:47:29 AM

Evan kneels down next to Mira, resting a hand on her shoulder in comfort. He listens as the others banter back and forth, trying to decide whether to try and talk to Sarla or sneak on to her estate. He frowns slightly at Kadaz's statement about Jarvis. He slowly signs to Mira, his fingers pressing against her shoulder. I was under the impression that Jarvis, rather than having a grudge against Sarla, had an infatuation with her. Perhaps, instead of trying to sneak on to the estate at the moment, we should hunt down this Jarvis and have a conversation with him first, about Sarla and the estate. He did not strike me as being overly brave unless he has the numbers on his side.

Mira
Sunday August 1st, 2004 12:11:50 PM

Mira tranlates for Evan, and lends her support to the idea that the party seek the Jarvis fellow. "If we can't find him by noon, I'm for calling on Sarla."

Conner
Sunday August 1st, 2004 7:04:30 PM

The fighter looks up from his seated position next to Mira, "I have said my piece. I will follow whatever the group decides, but I grow old waiting for concensus." Conner shifts to a more relaxed position on the ground, propped up by one elbow, legs extended to his side.

"If we are going to ensnare this Jarvis character we had better have a plan. We will need bait, and good ground for springing the trap."

DM Kathy
Sunday August 1st, 2004 8:55:01 PM

Those of you experienced in such things are pretty certain that Jarvis is known in the area, and that some casual conversation at the Coachman or a nearby pub (i.e., a Gather Information check) would yeild decent results.

Devryn is able to confirm that Jarvis is from a nearby estate, owned by his father. He can point out the specific estate, which does not adjoin Wycklea, but is near enough to be in the same neighborhood. Devryn did not invesitgate Jarvis thoroughly, however, and has no other information about him.
If you decide to find out more about Jarvis, please make Gather Information checks. If you try to get in to see Sarla, please make Diplomacy checks.

Arm
Monday August 2nd, 2004 5:46:19 AM

"Even though we have had problems doing this in the past, I suggest that we split up and seek out Jarvis & Sarla at the same time...as I said, Evan, Mira & myself are already known to her, so we would be the best candidates to seek Jarvis. If no one else agrees, I'll go along with whatever the group decides, of course, but I still feel uneasy about meeting Sarla again, as it's sure to arouse suspicions.".

Uriel
Monday August 2nd, 2004 8:52:41 AM

Uriel counters Arm, "You have also already met Jarvis..." he pauses, "but I can't think of why he would be any more suspicious of you. Not going in force if he is a bully doesn't seem like a good idea. Let's try the Jarvis connection."

"We can always leave the three of you that have seen her outside of Wycklea, once we decide to speak to Sarla," Uriel looks around, also ready to put foot to path.

Kadaz  d20-3=-2

"I agree. Let's all go see Jarvis. I don't want to split up and have each group again encounter problems."

The sorcerer gets up out of the dust, and brushes off the back-side of her skirt. "Jarvis it is, then" she says smiling at Kadaz, adding, "as one group!"

She picks up her shortspear and starts to walk towards the small cart pulled by Evan's shaggy pony. Turning around, she looks at Shadow and Devryn, and tilting her head to one side, states matter of factedly, "you're comming with us, right?"

Evan
Monday August 2nd, 2004 5:47:02 PM

Evan offers Mira a hand up as it would seem the majority wish to seek out Jarvis. Something Conner said gives Evan a bit of something to think on. The party needs a single leader, someone who has the patience to listen to all points then make a decision on which direction the party should move. His own personal choice, if he were to listen to his heart, would be Mira. But his head points out that sometimes Mira seems a bit insecure and that could be a problem. Uriel could also be a good choice although sometimes a decision must be made that could be counter to his religous beliefs. Arm is certainly charming enough but a bit flighty sometimes. Kadaz seems to want to follow, although he is a careful thinker as is Conner. Evan gives a quiet sigh as he continues to think on the problem.

Devryn shrugs. "I hadn't thought this fellow significant, but if he's a way to get onto the estate, he's worth looking into." He goes with the group.

You find the local watering hole and are able to get some information on Jarvis.

"Jarvis? He's an idiot," one man tells Kadaz brusquely.

Evan keeps his ears open and hears that Jarvis is an idiot, that he listens to too many bard's tales of romantic love, and that he now seems to fancy himself in love with Sarla. Jarvis's father seems to be well-thought-of, but you get the feeling that he doesn't think too highly of his son.

"Jarvis? He's an idiot," the pleasant-looking serving girl tells Mira. "No real harm in him, though," she adds. "His father's always been real hard on him, and he's been harder than usual of late since his daughter, Jarvis's younger sister, disappeared."

Arm  d20+7=27
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 5:49:34 AM

Arm resigns himself to the majority and goes with the group to the nearest pub. Standing close to Mira, he hears the serving girl's comments and questions her further, "Really? Pray, my dear, tell us what you know of the circumstances surrounding this young girl's disappearance." (gather info=27 nat. 20 :) ). As he listens to her reply, he gazes at the pretty woman, and his thoughts wander just a bit to a certain red-haired beauty that he met when the dragon attacked...it seemed so long ago and so far away...he's surprised by the fact that he's forgotten her name.

Uriel
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 7:54:46 AM

"We seem to be gathering a good consesus of idiot for this Jarvis character. I am not sure how we will be able to use him to get to Sarla if his reputation is thus," Uriel ponders at the table of the 'watering hole'.

Shadow
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 8:18:56 AM

Upon entering the local 'watering hole', he will look around and place his right hand on his left shoulder with his pinky tucked under and act like he is wiping off something from his shoulder three times. He will then do the same with his left hand on his right shoulder. (This is the sign of the guild, and he should know fairly quickly if there are any members here.)

If there is the return sign, Shadow will excuse himself after a couple of minutes and approach the other guild member and say, "It should be a nice night out tonight." He will then wait for the guild response. After receiving the correct response, "Can you give me any information about a man named Jarvis?"

Wilfire Ironhouse
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 10:01:56 AM

Wilfire sits beside Uriel, while keeping a cautious eye at the other people in the drinking establishment.

"I use-ta work in a place like this", Wilfire tells Uriel. "But that was before I learned that I wasn't right with the Gods."

Evan
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 7:39:37 PM

While the others work the pub, Evan orders up a plate of meats, cheese and breads for the others to snack while they work the pub. He gathers from all the responses so far that everyone thinks Jarvis is an idiot but Jarvis had not been by himself when he accosted Mira and himself. Perhaps it might behoove the group to find out who the other fellows were that had been with Jarvis, even though this seemed pretty much like a dead end.

When Mira makes a pass by the table, Evan signs to her to try and find out about the other fellows that had been with Jarvis. When she moves away, Evan cannot help but notice how well she and Arm seem to work together, Mira's beauty and Arm's charm managing to find out just about anything they need to know.

Kadaz  d20+1=18

DM Kathy
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 9:42:18 PM

Shadow does his best, but nobody in the establishment responds. It's pretty unlikely that there would be another Guild member out here in the sticks.

Kadaz, Wilfire, and Conner keep an eye on the pub's patrons, but they seem a fairly typical group--a few late breakfasters and the occasional workman sneaking away for a mid-morning break.

The serving girl smiles at Arm. "Well," she says, apparantly delighted to be able to share some juicy gossip, "Vecca always was a headstrong girl--smarter than Jarvis and twice as stubborn. Neither of them got along with their father, but he put up with a lot more from Vecca because she seemed to be the future of the family. They'd been arguing more and more, though--Vecca and her father, I mean--and then one day, Vecca just up and left. Nobody's heard from her since."

Mira  d20+4=17
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 9:46:25 PM

Mira swings by the table occupied by the party, and selects a piece of cheese from the assortment ordered by Evan. She nods silently back at Evan, and signs, will do.

Crossing to the bard, she puts a hand on his arm, and leans in close to whisper her information and the new questions Evan has shared regarding Jarvis' followers.

Mira will then circulate around the room persuing a line of enquiry regarding Jarvis' sister. "Young girls with strict fathers sometimes run away. I have recently met a young woman from this area. She is now living in Plateau City. If you describe this younger sister of Jarvis, well, perhaps they are one and the same?"

Uriel  d20+2=8
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 10:16:37 AM

Uriel gets no where trying to gather information about Jarvis, but he does listen to Wilfire.

"Wilfire, what convinced you that you were not right with the gods?" Uriel looks in earnest at Wilfire, since matters of religion are of great significance to the Paladin.

Wilfire Ironhouse

"I was beatin with in an inch of my life", Wilfire responded to Ureg's question. "You see I was livin foul... drinking and fighting, drinking and fighting. I always knew in my heart I had to make a change, but it took the shadow of death for me to realize it.

After that I found the cloth, and I've been a very different man every since."

With the story told Wilfire looks down at the table, and then looks back up with a slight smile on his face. Obviously feeling better.

Kadaz
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 4:19:08 PM

Kadaz pulls out the journal of information and goes over what information the group has gathered. This doesn't make much sense. What have I missed? he thinks to himself.

Evan
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 5:31:32 PM

The more they learn, the more confusing things seem to be. Evan signs to Uriel, I wonder if Jarvis' sister knew Sarla, if maybe her disappearance had something to do with the estate or with the weather thingie.

Conner
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 7:03:09 PM

Conner helps himself to the food and and reiterates his desire for less talk and more action. "I've heard enough to convince me to get hold of this Jarvis character."

Shadow
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 9:54:55 PM

Shadow sits quietly at the table and listens to the group report about this Jarvis. He shakes his head not knowing what else to do at the moment, but wait to see what transpires.

DM Kathy
Thursday August 5th, 2004 12:50:49 AM

"Hm. At this hour they're probably all still abed," the girl says with some contempt. She adds, "I don't know for sure who Jarvis's two friends on horseback were; he runs with several of the wealthy young people in the neighborhood. Most likely Bremton and Fansworth; they're not much brighter than Jarvis and could probably have been talked into something like this. I don't know who the footmen might have been. Hirelings most likely."

She can tell you where to find the estates of Bremton and Fanswirth.

Mira asks around and gets a description of Vecca--short, slender, red-haired, freckled. It doesn't seem to match anyone she's met.

Kadaz
Thursday August 5th, 2004 5:51:12 AM

Kadaz listens to the information that Mira uncovers. "Let's be off and track down Bremton and Fanswirth. Not much more to be learned sitting here."

Arm
Thursday August 5th, 2004 8:06:38 AM

"Aye," replies Arm after he thanks the barmaid profusely for her help, "Let us go and look for these two, and if we should happen across Jarvis in the process, so much the better...".

Evan
Thursday August 5th, 2004 6:43:21 PM

Evan nods in agreement with Kadaz and Arm. He drops a coupld of silver coins on the table as a tip for the har working waitress then rises. Much like Conner, Evan is itching for some action rather than all this talk. At no other time is his handicap more emphasized as when its time to talk and it makes Evan uncomfortable.

Mira
Thursday August 5th, 2004 6:53:14 PM

Returning to the table occupied by the party members, Mira remains standing, anxious to be on the go. "You coming too?" she asks fixing the newcommers with a green eyed stare. "By the way, what did you say your names were?" she adds.

Conner
Thursday August 5th, 2004 11:31:21 PM

Conner shoulders his pack, adjusts his longsword, and makes sure that his beloved shield is firmly attached to his pack. The fighter readies to leave.

DM Kathy
Friday August 6th, 2004 2:25:30 AM

"You may call me Seeker," says Devryn, "because I seek to return that which was taken from us."

You leave the inn knowing of three locations: Jarvis's house, Bremton's house, and Fansworth's house. Fansworth's is the closest, so you find yourselves there first.

There is a gatehouse, much as there was at Wycklea. The gatekeeper asks your business, and seems unsurprised that such an odd assortment of people has come to call on "Master Fansworth."

"He won't be up yet," the man cautions you, "but I suppose it won't do no harm if you wait for him. No weapons, mind," he adds, eyeing Conner and Kadaz. "I'll keep 'em safe for you until your visit's over."

Arm
Friday August 6th, 2004 8:25:00 AM

Arm unslings his crossbow & unbuckles his sword, handing them to the gatekeeper, adding with a wry grin, "I hope ye will allow me to keep my lute, as even though it is possible to bean a person on the head with it, I hardly intend to do so.".

Shadow
Friday August 6th, 2004 8:54:45 AM

Following the group to this other estate, Shadow is wondering what good any of this is going to do. Thinking to himself, 'How did I get into this?'

He hears the request of the gatekeeper, and reluctantly gives up his bow & quiver, rapier, and four daggers (that he had secreted around his body). He will not speak out during this even though he will slightly shake his head.
