Diplomacy or Death

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday July 21st, 2004 11:56:00 PM

"I made my way here, to the edge of the Wyrmsfut deep in the Culverwood. There is magic in this place. There is sanctuary." The witch's voice trails off, then her eyes light on Alkali, and she starts to rant again. "One day while...collecting...I heard a cry for help. I followed the noise and discovered a halfling caught up in a spider's web. She swore she would serve me if I would come to her rescue. Ungrateful wretch! After several months Difda ran away taking a number of my things. Things I had made! Betraying me! Stealing! She took the mask I made for Merak. Shaped to fit his face the way I knew it, while I still remembered it. " Now in front of Cassandra, the witch reaches out to touch the mask.

Eyes closed and boney hands trembling she says, "I want retribution! Retribution for that which was stolen from me by Difda, revenge on the coven for abandoning me, punishment of Merak for betraying me! Tell me, will you avenge my loss?"

Cadmar
Thursday July 22nd, 2004 3:05:53 AM

Cadmar's eye starts to twitch. Schedar's mind seems to be permamently set on vengeance. It is both very sad and deeply disturbing how one can make payback the whole point of one's life. These are workings of the accursed Jancassis, even though her name was never mentioned here.

Cadmar looks back at his companions and, realizing that one person probably does not have an authority to speak for everyone, decides to ask for clarification: "What kind of retribution for your stolen property would you consider appropriate? As for Merak, if he is still alive, we could probably manage to bring him before justice to answer for his deed."

"As for taking vengeance on your coven... Schedar, do you even know whom the Coven of Weal consists of nowadays? There might be no one there who would remember your story."

A moment of silence.

"And once the deed is done, what will you be living for?..."

Kedarn
Thursday July 22nd, 2004 3:55:10 AM

"It was very noble of you to aid the halfling Difda when you found her trapped. How long was Difda with you before she left you? Schedar, who was in the Coven of Weal when you were active in it? Do you know where Difda is from or who she might work with?" Kedarn asks with concern in his voice.

Lorth
Thursday July 22nd, 2004 7:53:51 AM

Lorth waits for more details before he speaks.

Bralin
Thursday July 22nd, 2004 8:35:37 AM

Retribution. Revenge. If possible, Bralin's face sets even more into a countenance of stone. Surely his companions will not accept such a charge.

Cadmar and Kedarn ask their questions, and the dwarf slowly shakes his head one time.

Andrath
Thursday July 22nd, 2004 10:41:15 PM

Andrath moves quietly in with the rest of the party, and says, "My lady, you have trapped yourself here for so long, and have let your hate eat you up. We really don't have the first idea about how to find these transgressors of yours, let alone how to exact the retribution that you say you seek. Would it instead be possible to lead you back to the rest of the Wold, so that you can learn the wonderful things that it contains? First off, we could introduce you to Denholm, who sent us to contact you about the mask. Certainly, he could help you understand that there is more to life than hate and revenge. We spent a very peaceful night in his tree here in the swamp, and it might be possible for you to feel that rest as well, if you were to come with us.

Instead of asking us to be your tools of revenge, instead let us be your tools of peace. Now, witches are an accepted part of society, although still a bit mysterious. The witches that we know seem to have only have the best interest of the Wold at heart, and I am sure that they could return you to their fold, if you were able to escape the hatred that binds you.

For example, the mask that you have created could be a wonderful, magical item, if its power could only be slightly changed. Will you come with us, and learn?

DM Bob & Carla
Friday July 23rd, 2004 12:04:48 AM

Schedar gets an odd look on her thin face after Cadmar, Kedarn, and Andrath each say their piece. It is as if an idea has suddenly dawned. "Who was in the coven?" she repeats after Kedarn. "Remember?" she whispers after Cadmar. "Maybe they are all dead?" she wonders aloud. "It has been a long time. Maybe Merak, Difda, Dulcet, and all the rest are dead?"

As she deals with the possibility that those on whom her hatred was focused may no longer even be living, the witch seems to diminish a little in stature. Reaching out her hands in order to make contact with the surface of the mask, Schedar intones, "Cormamin lindua ele lle". Those who understand elven Highlight to display spoiler: { "My heart sings to see thee."}

The mask comes away in the witch's hands, revealing Cassandra's fair face marred only by peeling sheets of skin where the mask had interfered with the natural process of exfoliation. "Thank you!" sighs the young witch as she puts her hands to her face and starts to slough off the dead skin.

The old witch takes a step back, clasping the mask tightly to her chest. Her pale eyes mist over when she lights on the rogue, "witches are a part of society?"

Cadmar
Friday July 23rd, 2004 5:11:21 AM

A sense of joy overcomes the ranger. He would laugh aloud if the passing stress didn't leave him feeling weak and tired. For a moment he is just content watching Cassandra's freed face. Then he offers her some water from his waterskin to help her wash off the last memories of the cursed item.

And it is then, when he is standing next to the elven witch, when a thought strikes him like a lightning. Turning to Schedar he slowly asks:

"Schedar, you DO know that the giants have been chased out of the Valley, don't you?"

Lorth
Friday July 23rd, 2004 8:52:13 AM

Lorth sighs audibly when the mask is removed. "Cadmar speaks the truth, the giants have been chased out and witches no longer need hide their craft. My own mother, Domi watch over her, is a pratcicer of the art herself. She also was driven into hiding when the giants came, she still dwells by herself in a cottage in the wood near Jarlswolf. Mayhaps you know her from years past... Certainly I will mention your name when I see her next." He then waits to see what Schedar's response to all this news is, perhaps we can help heal some of her old wounds after all.

Bralin
Friday July 23rd, 2004 10:28:58 AM

Bralin gives a curt nod of satisfaction when Shedar removes the girl's cursed mask. The quest is a success.

Now perhaps he can find this Magpie Crossing, and fulfill his oath.

The dwarf waits, somewhat impatiently, for his comrades to get around to leaving.

Kedarn
Friday July 23rd, 2004 2:10:21 PM

"thank you for aiding Cassandra Shedar. Would you like to come with us back to Jarlswolf so that you can see that the giants are truely gone from there?" Kedarn says polietly to her.

Andrath
Sunday July 25th, 2004 10:29:31 PM

Andrath smiles when he sees the mask removed from Cassandra's face. "Yes, Schedar, thank you for helping our young friend. And as I said, witches are an accepted part of society. If you are hesitant to come back with us, I am sure that we could talk to one of the covens and have them send someone out to talk to you about ... well about witching, I guess."

"As for Dulcet, she is not dead. She is the witches' representative on the town council for Jarlswolf. What is it that you say she has done? She has only been kind and helpful to us."

DM Bob & Carla
Sunday July 25th, 2004 11:19:45 PM

Schedar just stares at Cadmar when he announces that giants no longer inhabit the valley. "Your... mother! she answers incredulously when Lorth makes his announcement. However, it is Andrath's information that results in the biggest reaction. With eyes wide open, the old witch's mouth opens a closes a few times, but no sound comes out. She takes a step backward, and scans the party as if looking for a familiar face, "Dulcet lives? My half-sister is alive?"

Cadmar
Monday July 26th, 2004 4:10:13 AM

Uh oh. So Dulcet is her half sister. Is that bad or good?

"Yes, when we left the valley she was in good health." - Cadmar says cautiously. "Is she aware that you didn't perish in the dungeons of the giants?"

Lorth
Monday July 26th, 2004 8:21:16 AM

Lorth relaxes considerably and waits to hear what Schedar decides.

Bralin
Monday July 26th, 2004 1:26:40 PM

Absentmindedly, the dwarf reaches into his belt pouch, removes the obsidian sphere inside, and begins rolling it from hand to hand.

His eyes stare, trancelike, at a point in space slightly off Cadmar's left shoulder.

This promises to be a very long conversation, and Bralin's mind escapes back to his Chamber under the Red Hills.

Andrath
Monday July 26th, 2004 11:37:09 PM

Andrath adds, "Cassandra, here, the witch that you have 'rescued' from the animal mask, is one of Dulcet's aides. I am sure that we can bring the news of your existence here in the swamp back to Dulcet, if you don't want to accompany us back to Jarlswolf to meet her yourself. As a matter of fact, many of the tasks that we have carried out around Jarlswolf have been at Dulcet's behest, and she was the one that recommended we seek the solution to Cassandra's problem with the mask, here in Wyrmsfut swamp."

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 12:57:36 AM

A bored Bralin lets those who are diplomatic advance the negotiations, while others watch in trepidation unable to discern how Schedar will respond to the news that her half-sister, Dulcet not only lives but is an important cog in the coven of Weal.

In a surprisingly calm voice, the old hag responds to Cadmar, "when she did not come looking for me, I assumed she had abandoned me...or was dead." "I thought Merak may have betrayed her as well!" she adds, bitterness in her voice. Still hugging the mask tightly, a distant look in her pale eyes, she sighs, "I would like to see my sister and learn what has transpired in my absence. I wonder if it has changed much, Jarlswolf? "

At the mention of Cassandra's 'trade', Schedar's head jerks up. "You are a witch? Have you been practicing your arts for many years?" she asks excitedly. Then, looking at each of the party in turn, she adds, "are there any others amongst you who reach into the realm of shadows to draw power from the Woldsblood?"

Elerinn
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 1:01:05 AM

The red headed sorcerer hangs his head when the witch looks at him, in order to avoid meeting her crazed stare. He shakes his head to indicatae that "no", he is not a witch.

OOC: DM Carla for the vacationing Jasper. Does anyone know when he is expected back?

Kedarn
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 1:17:20 AM

"I am not a witch but I would rather see the Woldsblood protected and not miss used as a cleric of Gargul." Kedarn says to Shedar in a calm voice.

Cadmar
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 5:53:16 AM

"It might be best if you heard Dulcet's story from your half-sister herself. Will you come back with us to Jarlswolf?"

I would feel much safer if she was coming back with us. I certainly wouldn't like to run into another nest of trolls. Despite what others are saying I still think the last battle could have gone either way.

Then suddenly the evening in the tree house of Denholm comes back to Cadmar with crystal clarity. He feels as if the stern voice of the man of the forest was still ringing in his ears: "You MUST destroy the mask!"

"Schedar... what do you plan to do with the mask?"

Lorth
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 8:08:53 AM

Lorth simply states, "Nay" when asked if he is a witch. He then goes about watching the surrounding country side.

Bralin
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 9:33:18 AM

Bralin doesn't respond. He doesn't even realize he's been asked a question.

He's back in The Chamber, reveling in the wonders of the Living Stone.

The obsidian sphere passes back and forth, back and forth.....

Alkali
Tuesday July 27th, 2004 11:06:30 PM

After watching the negoatiations, Alkali speaks up. "I draw Woldsblood. And there are many other witches in the coven, and they do not hide their talents. The giants are gone."

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 12:27:25 AM

Cassandra nods her head in the affirmative to Schedar's question, adding "but it has been a while since I have drawn power. I am mostly a collector for the coven."

Alkali steps forward and the older witch laughs a cackling laugh. "We three are enough for a coven circle! We can perform a ritual!" she sputters in genuine excitement, before asking, "who wants to go to Jarlwolf?" then adds, "the magic way?"

Hugging the mask to her, Schedar makes her way back towards the entrance of her home, she pauses when she hears Cadmar and then Kedarn speak out. Her eyes narrow a little as she scrutinizes the elf with the dark hair and blue eyes flecked with silver, before answering, "we weave power and lore, forging pacts with immortals and communing with the spirits of the Lands of Rest. The spirits give us information, willingly, like a mage's companion. The Realm of Shadows coexists with the Wold proper and Woldsblood runs through the Wold. We draw power from Woldsblood, but we do not physically touch it or draw it out. We only draw its power. Here," the witch gestures around the clearing, before continuing in a suddenly clear and strong voice, "the ley lines cross creating a nexus. It is a place of great power."

The witch darts behind the woven mat that acts as the door to her home. A short while later she returns a heavy iron cauldron in one hand and a large plain bag in the other. The mask is nowhere to be seen.

Cadmar  d20+11=27
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 3:11:55 AM

Cadmar looks back at his companions, feeling that he is fighting a lonely fight. The witch has removed the item without asking for anything in return, and for that Cadmar is grateful, but the matter of the item is hardly resolved. Now that things started to move at a rapid pace the ranger knows that if the matter of the mask is not closed off right now it will probably never be.

"Schedar, please." Cadmar asks again, amazed to hear his voice come out calm and patient. "What are you going to do with your mask? The only power of that item is to hurt. You can't predict when it will leave your hands - nobody can plan for everything. Would you like to see some poor soul put it on by accident, like Cassandra did, and spend the rest of his life in torment?" [Diplomacy 27]

Lorth
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 7:32:18 AM

Lorth waits with Cadmar, to see what becomes of the mask.

Bralin
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 11:48:13 AM

Schedar's movement snaps the dwarf out of his reverie.

He looks dubiously at the witch and her equipment. Going to Jarlwolf the 'magic way' sounds intriguing, but Bralin has got some serious reservations concerning this woman's mental faculties at the moment.

He looks around to see how his comrades react to her offer.

Kedarn
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 9:02:47 PM

"You disrupt the rightful Rest of the Departed. You meddle with the Cycle of Death and Rebirth." Kedarn replies with quiet harshness.
"Shedar by drawing your power from the Woldsblood you are demeaning the Woldsblood and its sanctity. That is an affront to Gargul Himself and everything the Woldsblood is. Shedar the mask must be destroyed. It is tainted and unholy." Kedarn replies with a cold, otherworldly and yet impassioned voice.

Kedarn stands firmly in place waiting for Shedar's reply with his right hand clasping the symbol of Gargul. Slowly a dark gleam appears in his eyes.

Alkali
Wednesday July 28th, 2004 11:34:52 PM

Alkali is totally shocked at the proposition for a ritual. "A ritual? I'd love to do that. I've never actually been in one myself, just witnessed them." Even more excitement riles up his face as he hears the place he is in is a nexus. "Dear Flower! Two amazing things in one day..."

As Kedarn begins to talk of Woldsblood, Alkali tries to end the arguement. "We can talk of Woldsblood and morals in a more situable environment. For now, let us get ready to leave."

Andrath
Thursday July 29th, 2004 12:18:56 AM

Having had no experience with witches' rituals, the elf waits to see what Alkali suggests. He, too, is a little leary about travelling using witch magic, but he will give it a go, if Alkali and Cassandra say that it will be safe.

He is concerned that Schedar doesn't seem to worry any more about the mask, and waits for her answer to Cadmar's questions about the cursed item.

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday July 29th, 2004 7:41:51 AM

Schedar hears Cadmar's entreaties regarding the mask, and his sincerity predisposes her to a kindler, gentler response. "Why," she says, "its right here in my bag. I will bring it with me to Jarlswolf, and show it to my sister. We can then decide where best it belongs."

The older witch finds a suitable place for the heavy cauldron and becons Cassandra and an enthusiastic Alkali to come forward. "We will cook with magic today!" A wistful look erases any trace of anger on Shedar's face. "We will need some magic components with which to tinker*. What might your group have that could work?"

*Alkali recognizes the term (Knowledge check= 15, for everyone except Bralin (who hasn't had much contact with witches)) Those who can recall the term know Highlight to display spoiler: { that a witch can add a new material component to a spell in order to change what the spell does. A witch of sufficiently high level can use magic items as components with surprising and potent results, but the magic item is destroyed.}

When Kedarn makes his accusations, Schedar reels back as if struck. Alkali is unable to temper the damage, and a stormy look crosses the older witches face as she looks at the group. "You lie!" she screams at the party, "You all lie! Things haven't changed in the Wold!" Pointing a thin finger at the party leader, she continues, "He is in league with the witch haters! He wants the Realm of Shadows for his own selfish uses, and would have me and my things destroyed!" The witch clutches the bag up, hugging it to her chest, and starts to back away from the group.

(OOC: Would like to see some initiative on appropriate CHA (Diplomacy, Intimidate) or other checks, please.)

Cadmar  d20+8=17
Thursday July 29th, 2004 10:35:57 AM

After Schedar gives her answer Cadmar nods, completely satisfied, and turns his attention to the preparations for return journey. Cadmar has heard about such rituals [Knowledge:Arcana 17]. "So, how many magic items do you think we would need to sacrifice for the return trip to be a success? Would a potion or two work? I also have some seals that I am not likely to ever need. Here, let me show you."

Then Kedarn says his piece and Cadmar does what he did when Lia cast her spell: looks back in utter disbelief.

"You have been working for a coven this whole month and it only struck you right now that what they do is at odds with your religion?..."

The ranger starts thinking quickly again and this time comes to a conclusion that there is no way to smoothen things up, at least not immediately, since Kedarn is obviously not yet finished. Well, then, let's hear what else the leader of the group has to say. Cadmar folds his arms on his chest and takes a few steps back, giving Kedarn a chance to demonstrate his diplomatic skills yet again.

Lorth
Thursday July 29th, 2004 1:03:23 PM

"Kedarn", Lorth almost chokes, "Witches use the Woldsblood's to create their magic?"

Kedarn  d20+4=22 d20+2=19
Thursday July 29th, 2004 6:54:20 PM

"Lorth, witches draw power to help cast their spells from the Woldsblood. Cadmar, I have been helping with the missions that we have been on as they have had a good cause. I have kept my feelings in check up to now but I can not stand by while the Mask which is truely tainted remains and is not destroyed." Kedarn calmly tells Cadmar and Lorth.
"Shedar, by drawing power from the Woldsblood you risk weakening of a soul to the point that it may not reach the Lands of Rest. I ask you again to destroy the mask as it is tainted and is harmfull, use it in your spell as a component that way you will not have to draw upon Woldsblood for power for your spell." Kedarn calmly Kedarn says while holding his symbol of Gargul.

Bralin  d20=8
Thursday July 29th, 2004 9:40:15 PM

This conversation is getting much more compelling. Bralin has never heard of Woldsblood, and it appears to be a crucial element in the understanding of witches. As witches appear plentiful in this valley, the dwarf resolves to learn more about this power. He may have need of that knowledge someday.

As for the present, the party leader has spoken. The mask WILL be destroyed. Bralin remains where he is, but he does pull his war axe. His expressionless face never wavers as he waits word from Kedarn.

[Intimidate 8]

Andrath
Friday July 30th, 2004 12:14:55 AM

"Kedarn, Schedar never said that she wasn't going to destroy the mask. I think that she said we could bring it to Jarlswolf and give it to Dulcet, and she could decide what to do with it. Perhaps the mask could be altered so that it is a helpful item. Imagine a mask that would allow you to take on the form of any creature, or a mask that would allow you to take on the visage of another person. Maybe this mask can be changed to something like that. If not, Dulcet can always decide to destroy it, or place it out of harm's way.

"What is so terrible about tapping into the power of the Wold to affect magic? If it is used for good reason, why not use the Woldsblood to good ends? Apparently, I don't understand this magic very much at all."

Andrath resolves, as soon as the party returns to Jarlswolf, to pursue the question of the different types of magic, so that he can make more informed decisions and offer better counsel.

Elerinn
Friday July 30th, 2004 7:28:04 AM

The gnome is worried. He just wants to go back to Jarlswolf, and get out of the swamp. If the witch doesn't use her magic, will they have to hike back along the trails?

The idea of encountering spiders again makes him shiver.

The small sorcerer takes his pack from his back and starts to rummage through the contents.

DM Bob & Carla
Friday July 30th, 2004 7:47:36 AM

Clutching her bag tightly, Schedar continues to back away from the group, her eyes on Bralin's axe. "Witches do not diminish Woldsblood or the souls that flow therein by their use of the power that comes from it! In our magic, those who are departed can yet contribute something to the living and those they have left behind." Gesturing towards Cassandra and Alkali, she continues "when we draw power from a nexus it is a larger thing than one soul and does not demean it. The spirits who were helpful can go to their rest knowing they have been a part of something glorious."

Out of the corner of her eye, the witch looks curiously at the seals Cadmar has laid out. Scrolls, potions, and magic items, she knows. The sealsshe has never seen or heard of and they intrigue her.

Cadmar
Friday July 30th, 2004 6:10:20 PM

Cadmar notices that the witch is eyeing his seals and is glad for that little distraction.

"Look, let's not do anything hasty here. We do not have to make any rushed decisions."

"Schedar, please do not accuse us so lightly of lying. We never claimed that everybody nowadays fully accepts witches. But even though some things stayed the same (the dogma of Gargul, for example) other things changed. You see two other witches among us - not a company any witch-hater would choose for himself, don't you agree? Back home some people might still speak ill of witches, but I haven't heard of anyone trying to seriously harass one in years."

"Kedarn, what you said before sounded as if you were putting all witches in the same sack. From what I have seen there are good witches and there are bad witches, just like wizards, clerics, and pretty much everyone else. I don't think this one is bad. She could have made the mask cause its wearer to rot from inside out, or age ten years with every month that passed. She didn't."

Andrath
Saturday July 31st, 2004 1:33:10 AM

Andrath adds, "Kedarn, Cadmar is right. You need to take the measure of the man, or the woman, by their actions, and not by some preconceived dogma. Schedar seems willing to accompany us to Jarlswolf and rejoin civilization. Let's give her a chance. Maybe once we get out of this swamp, you can continue to educate us on the issues of Gargul worshippers and the users of the powers of Woldsblood."

"Schedar, what can you tell us about transporting us using your magic?"

The elf starts to fidget, eager to get moving. He is still a little hesitant about this magical travel method, but if it saves days of trekking through the swamp, he is willing to give it a try.

Alkali
Saturday July 31st, 2004 9:52:03 PM

Alkali is taken aback by Kedarn's sudden opposition to witchcraft. "We do not kill souls for our magics. Especially here in a nexus. We only draw upon their strength and take what they offer. Please let us try this. " Alkali's eyes light up for a second in daydream. "I get to see someone tinker at a nexus... even you must be excited Cassandra!" He walks towards Schedar offering her his hand. "C'mon. Let us get this ritual ready."

Elerinn
Sunday August 1st, 2004 10:29:25 PM

Elerinn moves over towards Kedarn, and asks, "is there any way you can reconcile you beliefs and still accept aid from this witch?" The small mage lowers his voice to barely more than a whisper, "I am most anxious to be out of this place."

Kedarn  d20+4=18 d20+6=26
Monday August 2nd, 2004 5:28:38 AM

"I believe that there are some witches that do not tap the Woldsblood for their spells unless it is of dire emergency, but every fiber of myself and belief in Gargul feels that it is sacrilege to use the Woldsblood for the casting of spells." calmly says Kedarn while looking at the entire group.

"Shedar, can you perform the teleportation of us with out tapping the Woldsblood if you use nagical items as the components in the spell?. If it is possible please use the mask as one of the items for the spell. I will give you theses 3 scrolls for use in the spell on the condition that the Woldsblood is not drawn upon for the spell."

"Andrath, the mask has an evil purpose for it was created to get revenge upon another person."

If Shedar agrees to what Kedarn asked, Kedarn will watch the entire ritual (spellcasting) to see if the Woldsblood is utilized.

The dwarf doesn't move or say anything.

He continues to wait for the exchange to get to some point where action on his part is called for.

DM Bob & Carla
Monday August 2nd, 2004 1:56:48 PM

In answer to Kedarn's challenge the old witch responds, "You may believe what you like, cleric, but I can no more cast a spell without drawing on the power of Woldsblood than you can heal without invoking your deity. No witch can!" Schedar continues in a calm, even tone, as she offers an ultimatum, " These are no trifling magics that we weave! If you let me tinker with some of these magical items, we can walk the path of shadows to Jarlsworth. If you agree to my terms, I will travel along with you and surrender the mask to the Coven of Weal, and abide by whatever decision the coven makes regarding its fate."

Schedar pauses briefly over the seals, potions, and scrolls presented by the party members. From Cadmar's stash, she selects a Seal of Quickness and Seal of Close Quarters. From Elerinn's small stash she collects a vial containing a potion of Cat's Grace. She hands the items to Alkali. Moving to Kedarn and those who stand by him, she looks at the dwarf and says, "Have you never wondered why your people feel energy when deep in your chambers under the mountains? Could it not be the proximity to..." the witch breaks off, and meets Kedarn's unwavering stare.

"You can travel with me, and see how we witches ally with the noble souls from the Realm. You will be in Jarlswolf in one day." Schedar makes eye contact with each party member before adding, "or you can return the way you came. You know the way..."

Andrath
Monday August 2nd, 2004 10:57:24 PM

Well, now Andrath is really torn. He has been with Kedarn since the formation of the party, and has always been able to count on the cleric. However, they now have a witch in the party (Alkali), and have been helping rescue another witch from the mask (Cassandra). Both of the witches have been casting spells as they felt necessary, and never has Kedarn spoken out against them. Is he expecting Alkali and Cassandra to follow the same rules about not being able to use Woldsblood? What if they speak out against Kedarn's God's apparent monopoly on Woldsblood and souls?

Not having an opinion, except his desire to get out of this cursed swamp as quickly as possible, he waits to see how the moral confrontation between Kedarn and the witches play out.

"Kedarn, you say that you refuse to allow the witches to use the power of Woldsblood, and Schedar, you state that witches have to use Woldsblood power to work your magics. Alkali, Cassandra, is this true?"

Cadmar

Cadmar is a bit surprised when Schedar starts browsing through his seals herself, but doesn't say anything. When the witch is done the ranger takes a third seal (the Seal of Survival) off his chest and hands it to the witch.

"Thank you for taking the mask off Cassandra's face. Please accept this as a token of gratitude. You might find it useful one day."

Cadmar looks at Kedarn and does not envy the man's postition. He would hate to be torn like that between loyalty to the party and personal beliefs.

"I can't offer you any advice, Kedarn, other than to look at the consequences of both decisions. If the mask goes to Jarlswolf we probably will be able to convince the Coven to undo it."

Lorth
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 7:34:08 AM

Lorth waits for Kedarn to speak, as he is more knowledgable about their Gargul than himself.

Bralin
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 8:56:54 AM

The dwarf also waits for the party leader to decide. He gazes back stone faced as Schedar makes her query, but his mind races.

He was in fact asking that very question himself. Where DOES the power coursing through the Chamber originate? Could it be this Woldsblood that both Schedar and Kedarn revere?

The dwarf ponders these questions while waiting to learn if his journey to Jarlswolf will be measured in minutes or days.

Kedarn
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 4:34:41 PM

Kedarn looks to the others then says "If I follow my heart and beliefs, I will not take Shedar's method. On the other hand if somebody in the group can fix it so that I don't know (ie knock me unconsious) I will leave it up to the group to choose how we get back."

Kedarn will then go sit down and wait for the group to come to a decision.

With a sidelong glance at Schedar, Cassandra crouches in front of Kedarn and makes eye contact with the Cleric of Gargul. Reaching out a slender hand, she takes the elf's hand in hers, "Kedarn , words cannot express my gratitude to you and the Swords of Light for the kindness you have shown me by accepting my travail as your quest." The witches mellifluous voice weaves a spell around the cleric [ Hypnotism ]. "You have rescued me from my imprisonment, and for that I am in your debt. Follow me now, through the shadows and fear not any repercussions from your god."

While Cassandra weaves her magic, Schedar beckons Alkali to deposit the collected items into the cauldron. The witch picks through her own possessions and selects some ingredients which she also adds to the mix. Reaching into the cauldron with the hand missing it's baby finger she stirs the ingredients together. She gestures to Cassandra and Alkali to join her around the cauldron. As they join hands, she calls upon the power of the nexus. A silver mist rises from the iron vessel and spills over the edge. "Ayia maa melloneamin lema ed templa onna ando en templa bragollach telllach" Those who understand elvish Highlight to display spoiler: {"Oh friendly spirits, unlock the elemental gate and let us make haste through the shadowlands.}

Schedar signals Cassandra to go first and the young witch reaches out her hand for Kedarn to join her as she disappears into the pot. Schedar directs the party members to follow suit, admonishing, "You must join hands and hold on to your companions until we have finished our journey. Stay on the path!"

[OOC: Schedar has used Cadmar's Seal of Haste, Seal of Close Quarters, Elerinn's Potion of Cat's Grace and the ingredients for Ethereal Jaunt to 'tinker' with each spell and allow the group the pass through the shadowlands with great haste on their way to Jarlswolf.]

Elerinn
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 9:08:32 PM

When the cleric, under Cassandra's spell, takes the witch's hand and dissappears into the cauldron, Elerinn scrambles to clasp his free hand and reaches out for the next to follow.

Andrath
Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 9:32:14 PM

Andrath jumps to catch onto Elerinn's hand, still a little uneasy about the method of travel, but happy to be back on the 'road' once again. He vows to talk more with Kedarn about his God's feelings towards witches.

He reaches his hand back and calls out, "Come on; who's next for the magical ride?"

Cadmar
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 1:46:40 AM

Cadmar is more than a little disturbed by how this whole discussion ended up. Deep inside he feels a pang of guilt.

"This is wrong. Nobody should toy with people's minds like that. If it was that important to him we should have returned with him the normal way."

Still, there is no undoing of what has been done. Cadmar stands up, joins the rest of the party, and, when it is his turn, immerses himself in the cauldron.

Cadmar
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 1:54:15 AM

"Lorth!" The ranger looks back to see what the man decides to do. The witches forgot about him, but, though quiet, he seemed to be as disturbed as Kedarn. Cadmar looks back at the paladin. The ritual has already started and some people have vanished in the cauldron.

"Can you come with us? If not, I will keep you company on the way back through the swamp."

Kedarn
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 3:43:32 AM

Kedarn smiles at Cassandra then follows her.

As Kedarn follows Cassandra he will nod at each of the others.

Lorth
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 9:03:14 AM

Lorth feels as uneasy as Cadmar, about Kedarn. "I would have walked back with Kedarn", he says.
Many things pass through his mind. Will he fail as a paladin if he does something against his gods beliefs? Will he fail himself, if he sets aside his morals? Will he have the strength to set his father to rest, in Gargul's name if he taints himself in this way. His father... he thinks... his life's goal is to find him and give him a proper burial for his mothers sake...
Lorth looks at Cadmar, pain clearly in his eyes. "I cannot. For years Gargul has been my guiding light after my father died. Someday I will find him and lay his soul to rest. When I do it will be with a clear conscience. I will take the long road home."

Bralin  d20+6=21
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 10:21:31 AM

Bralin is baffled by Kedarn's statement.
Does he wish us to render him unconscious?

The dwarf looks to the others to determine if that was indeed Kedarn's intent, when Schedar promptly solves the dilemma.

Bralin stows his axe while the others go through the portal. And then Lorth and Cadmar get into it.

This cannot be, he decides. While he, Lorth, and Kedarn may have escaped the Wood, the paladin will not be able on his own. And the party is already moving. It is too late.

As Lorth argues with the disappearing Cadmar, Bralin lowers his head and plows straight into the paladin. He gives no warning at all as he slams into the man. Continually pumping his legs, he drives both paladin and himself into the cauldron.

Bralin grabs Cadmar's outstretched hand as they make contact.

[Charge and Bull Rush. Str check 21 beats Lorth's Take 10 of 13 or 14. Moving with Lorth should make for a 10' rush.]

Alkali
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 7:23:33 PM

Alkali trails behind and watches as Bralin charges an arguing Lorth into the portal. He almost falls down in laughter as he watches the scene, but follows the crew inside.

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 10:49:21 PM

Willingly or unwillingly the Swords of Light disappear into the cauldron. Schedar takes one last look around the clearing and the cave that has been her home so long, then climbs into the pot, quickly grabbing Alkali's small hand.

A soundless wind blows through shifting shadows of blackest black, and grey. Mists obscure the path one minute, and quickly evaporate the next. Above the group the clouds race as the sun moves rapidly across the sky, glowing eerily bright only to be obscured by the scudding clouds. The narrow path underfoot feels like a tamped gravel path, but looking down it falls to nothingness on either side.

Snatches of familiar places race past the travelers at breakneck speed, Denholme's Tree, Pullman's Crossing on the Peaseblossom, the paths of Culverwood Forest, The Spring of Alnair as well as misty streams and rivulets never before seen by any of the party. A grim feeling of foreboding grips the group, as Schedar whispers, "Quickly! Quickly, now! Gargul allows great leniency in the Shadow Lands and there are some undead who roam about seeking to avoid the afterlife!"

There is a sensation of not being alone, but the passage of images is too fast for any individual to grasp more than a fleeting image of someone vaguely familiar. A fist of bloodied ogres, a great red wyrm, a motherly old woman with several children hanging onto her skirts? Are these real or images from some dream?

Cassandra scurries at what appears to be breakneck speed towards a small golden globe that grows ever larger as the sky turns a navy blue tinged purple, pink, and green like a great bruise. The glowing circle grows ever larger, threatening to engulf the party when there is a cry from the front as the witch ducks her head, clasping Kedarn's hand firmly, and presses hard against some invisible wall pulling the party through after her into a gorgeous sunset viewed from atop Wolf Hill.

Elerinn
Wednesday August 4th, 2004 11:09:04 PM

The small mage feels as if his arms will be pulled from their sockets as he races along the path. Fearful of getting lost in this place that is both wonderful and frightening, he grips the hands of Kedarn and Andrath holding on as tightly as he can. Elerinn runs along as fast as his little feet will take him, while trying not to trip and fall.

Cadmar
Thursday August 5th, 2004 1:29:51 AM

Cadmar does not feel like laughing when he sees how the moral dillema of Lorth is resolved. The ranger suspects the matter will not be laid to rest that easily.

Still, it is great to find yourself so close to home. Cadmar dusts off his pants and thinks with delight about the bath he is going to take this evening.

"Let's walk back to the town, shall we?"

Lorth
Thursday August 5th, 2004 8:22:25 AM

Lorth is none to happy. He had enjoyed the no-nonsense dwarf's attitude since they met, but now he doesn't know what to think.

After falling out, onto wolf hill with the rest of his companions, Lorth turns to Bralin and says, "Sir Bralin, I am dissappointed and none to happy with your actions." He then spins on his heel and heads to town with out without the rest of the party.

When they near town Lorth goes directly to the temple.

Bralin
Thursday August 5th, 2004 8:45:50 AM

Bralin bends his head toward Lorth.
"Aye," he responds in acceptance of the paladin's admonition. Had the roles been reversed, he too would be most displeased.

"It was necessary," is the only explanation the dwarf provides.

As the group walks down the hill, he asks the others, "Where are we? And where is Magpie Crossing from this location?"

Kedarn
Thursday August 5th, 2004 3:20:19 PM

Kedarn looks around thenasks the others "How did we get here? What happened?"

Alkali
Thursday August 5th, 2004 10:16:33 PM

Always amazed, Alkali stares and tries to memorize all that he sees. Yet he knows this is a place of danger and runs as fast as he can trying not to trail behind. Upon arrival at Wolf Hill, Alkali breathes a sigh of exhaustion. "That was incredible. I really gotta learn this."

Andrath
Thursday August 5th, 2004 11:20:17 PM

Andrath holds on for dear life, totally unprepared for this journey. He thinks to himself, "I must learn more about this world of magic."

Once they are back in the real world, Andrath brushes himself off and asks, "Are we really back in the real world, or is this just another shadow?"

Assuming he thinks he is in the real world, he makes his way down the hill, with Cassandra and Schedar, to see Dulcet.

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday August 5th, 2004 11:22:02 PM

Alkali revels in the experience of magic travel, while Bralin tries to orient himself in the foreign landscape that is so familiar to all the rest of the party. Cassandra answers Kedarn, "You were led through the Shadow Lands. Please understand, Woldsblood is not the soul of the departed, anymore than a brook is the fish that swim in it. Schedar, Alkali, and I did not touch a single soul when we tinkered with the spells, nor did you or any of your companions harm any soul as we passed through that grey world."

Cassandra sighs resignedly, as she watches an angry Lorth stump off. "You and the paladin can seek out the priests and clerics of your god if there is more you need to know. I need to return Schedar to the coven." Both witches look a little tired. As Cadmar prepares to search out a bath, Cassandra presses a slim book into his hand. She then turns to Alkali, "You can come with us, if you wish." She expands the invitation, "any of you who wish can spend the night as guests of the coven, or take lodgings in Jarlswolf. Regardless, you must all present yourselves to Dulcet on the eve of the new moon two days hence." That said, the young witch leads the older one down the hill.

Lorth locates a small primitive shrine on the edge of town. There is a small hut with a few outbuildings nearby. Sitting just outside the door of the hut is an old man, his long black hair now mostly silvery grey. He is cloaked in a simple robe of some plain grey stuff. His eyes, set in a crinkled face are also grey. Wordlessly the man rises to greet the paladin, and leads him to a tiny shed on the property. Opening the door Lorth sees two plain narrow cots made up with clean but rough linens, a dark woolen blanket neatly folded at the foot. "What brings you to one of the homes of the god of Life and Death?" asks the hermit.

(OOC: This is effectively the end of the module. The next week will be end matter role-play to tie up any loose ends, develop story to support any character changes, and pick up hints about the next adventure. We will send an e-mail with role-play XP, Hero Points. Well done!)

Elerinn
Thursday August 5th, 2004 11:47:32 PM

Elerinn jogs along beside Cadmar. "How about a pint at that place Wynn liked, and then call it an early night?" Elerinn checks his pouch, then asks, "want to share a room?"

Catching the end of Bralin's question he volunteers, "why don't you come with us? You'll not make Magpie Crossing tonight!"

Cadmar
Friday August 6th, 2004 2:17:06 AM

Cadmar watches with some exasperation as the witch explains to Kedarn what he didn't wish to remember. This can't be good.

Then Cassandra presses the book in his hand and the ranger goes red on the face, forgetting to thank. When the witches depart he looks at the small booklet with beating heart.

"You know, Elerinn, I would like to come along, but somebody should probably be at the coven, just to, ah, keep an eye on things? If you run into my folks tell them I made it back in one piece, ok?"

"We'll meet tomorrow. We have a lot of things to do. We need to check what's new on the adventurer's board and see if there was any bounty on bandits. We have loot to divide. Maybe the witches will aid us with identifying the magic items again? We will need to talk with Dulcet and the coven about the mask. We need to find the families of Lorinor and Gealan and let them know of their deaths. I hope you won't leave me alone on this last one because Domi knows I don't feel I can handle it just by myself."

"Oh, and I wanted to look into the past of this symbol of Domi and see if there is a cleric in Jarlswolf who could cast Regeneration on my dad. But all of that tomorrow. Tonight, sleep and rest. Goodnight, friends."

[Folks, let's handle the division of loot through e-mails so that we don't clutter up the board. I am going to e-mail my list to everyone today, so if you don't get it be sure to let me know!]

Lorth
Friday August 6th, 2004 7:05:35 AM

Lorth greats the hermit with a smile. "Greetings friend, I am Lorth a humble follower of Gargul. If you don't mind. I'd like to spend a bit of time reflecting on my thoughts and actions at your temple."
He then reaches into his pack and removes his money pouch. "Please distribute this among the poor in the area, for they are in greater need than myself."
If the man does not block Lorth's way, he goes into the hut and puts his equipment on the floor, and starts to remove his armor.
He then looks to the hermit once again, "Perhaps when you are free, you would discuss, Gargul and the worldsblood with me. I am having crisis of faith, it seems I am fated to work along side witches, but I beleive Gargul's teachings say this is forbidden. Is this not true? Does Gargul not forbid creatures for using the worldsblood for personal magics?"

Bralin
Friday August 6th, 2004 9:01:15 AM

Bralin simply nods at Elerinn and follows the gnome to whereever it is he is going.

On the way, he looks around for an office of that Adventurer's League he'd heard about before. [WLA] The tales of the League have peaked the dwarf's curiousity.

Kedarn
Friday August 6th, 2004 5:55:56 PM

Kedarn will head off into Jarlswolf and look for his old mentor Therodan. When he finds him he will talk with him about the Coven of Weal and see if they are allied with Gargul.

Kedarn will spend the night at his parents home as he has not seen them in awhile.

In the morning Kedarn will perform his routine prayers to Garul with the rising of the sun.

Andrath
Friday August 6th, 2004 10:04:32 PM

Andrath follows after Cassandra, to make sure that the mask issue gets resolved, to let the rest of the party know.

[OOC: I am on holidays right now, and I can get to a computer most nights to post, but I can't get at my email. Is there any way that you can post the summary of the collected treasure here on the game board at least for the next week or so. We can delete it when I get back.]

DM Bob & Carla
Saturday August 7th, 2004 12:38:56 AM

Individually or in groups, the Swords of Light make their way towards Jarlswolf. In the waning light, those who are observant will notice many new notices affixed to the Adventurer's Board . However, they will have to be viewed in the morning, when there is better light.

Lorth is welcomed by the hermit whose grey eyes smile at the paladin, even as his face does not. Placing a cool hand on Lorth's shoulder, the hermit says "Stay here a while to rest, to learn, and to purify yourself." He shows the man a peg for his clothes, and a plain wooden box where he can stow his gear. He hands Lorth a large rough towel, and leads him behind the hut where there is a rough wooden trough and a pump. A cake of harsh soap sits in a tin cup. Dinner is dark bread, a small piece of light colored but pungent cheese, and water, but the meal is not taken in silence as the hermit tries to answer Lorth's questions.

"There are those who would put words in the mouth of the god of Death and Life" the hermit frowns, "and say Gargul desires this, and Gargul forbids that, but Gargul believes in free will and therefore gives much choice over these matters to his faithful. Gargul uses his followers to correct offences against the balance of life and death, to track down spirits that roam the realm of shadow and the Wold itself without proper reason." The frown disappears and the hermit continues, shrugging his shoulders, "some witches ally with Gargul himself and avoid condemnation. Does it make them right and other witches wrong? They draw from the same power, do they not?"

Elerinn and Bralin learn that there are rooms available at the inn, and for a couple of silver coins apiece they can share a room with meals thrown in. Tonight's special is a meat pie. The common room of the inn is loud and noisy and the talk is all about the new bard who is to perform that night.

Kedarn is welcomed into the bosom of his family, who are overjoyed that the young cleric has made it home safely. Little do they know of his mental anguish as he muses over the doctrinal importance of Woldsblood.

Cassandra and Alkali lead Schedar to the northern edge of town and Dulcet's small manor home while Andrath and Cadmar trail along worried about the fate of the mask. There is an emotional reunion between the half-sisters, and a small feast is quickly laid. Wine is served in celebration of Schedar's return. Dulcet defers dealing with the mask until the new day, assuring the adventurers that it will be safe as she takes it into another room. Late at night when the celebration is winding down, a servant shows the three weary adventurers to a small walled garden in the middle of which is an enormous cauldron from which steam escapes into the cool night. The servant smirks and says, "I'll take your clothes, sirs. There are robes for afterwards, and we'll have beds made up. The clothes will be cleaned and ready for you in the morning." Before he leaves, the servant takes out a wand, stirs the warm water in the cauldron and it starts to roil and bubble gently.

(OOC: Will get to Therodan and Woldian League of Adventurer's in another post.)

Cadmar
Saturday August 7th, 2004 3:31:33 AM

Cadmar sighs with pleasure as he allows hot water to wash away the last memories of that terrible swamp. When night comes, for the first time in a while he sleeps in peace.

[So, what is the book Cadmar has been given?]

*******************************************************
Now, to the new loot. First of all items that are only suitable to be converted to cash:

*** GOLD, JEWELRY, AND NONMAGIC VALUABLES CONVERTIBLE TO CASH ***

750 gold
gold ring (70 gold)
semi-precious stones, 8 (total worth 100 gold)
2 pearls (100 gold each) [to be kept as material components for Identify]
2 moonstones (50 gold each)
goblet [not appraised]
necklace with gems (30 gold)
moonstone (70 gold)

*******************************************************
Here are standard, nonmagic items we found:

*** NONMAGIC EQUIPMENT ***

holy symbol (Domi, old) [claimed by Cadmar]
masterwork breastplate
Small light wooden shield
2 longswords, standard
shortsword, masterwork
dwarven waraxe, standard
warhammer, masterwork [claimed by Bralin]
2 shortbows, standard
2 tents
3 flasks of alchemist's fire
2 sunrods
leather purse

*******************************************************
Finally, magic items. All of them have yet to be identified.

*** MAGIC ITEMS TO BE IDENTIFIED ***

pearl
gold ring
chain shirt
another chain shirt
longsword (faint transmutation) [claimed by Andrath]
dwarven waraxe [claimed by Bralin]
roll of leather
18 arrows
bone pendant
dagger
*******************************************************

OK, now to the business. Here is what I propose we do.

1. Identify the items. We should check if the witches would be willing to do that for us again before we start spending money in the Catacombs or using precious scrolls.

2. I suggest we make the tents, alchemist's fire, and sunrods party items.

3. Does anyone want anything from the nonmagic items list? If so, take your picks. After that we attach the rest to the list of items to be sold for Catacombs Vouchers.

4. We should redistribute the party property so that every fighter gets at least one potion of Bull Strength and everyone has at least one potion of Expeditious Retreat.

5. [This is a new suggestion!] Last time we split gold evenly among everyone first and handed out magic items later. I suggest that this time we divide the magic items first. Only after that is done we total all the remaining gold and share it among those party members who are left behind as far as amount of wealth claimed is concerned. What do you think about this proposal? [seconded]

6. Just a reminder - there were some extra items - the arms and armor of the bandits, but as most of the party didn't want to lay claim to these I didn't add them to the list. Probably best if the interested players negotiate the division of those items among themselves.

7. I also have one totally optional suggestion. I think using expensive potions (like potion of Bull Str) and some scrolls is a little too costly for a party of our level. I would like to suggest selling some potions and/or scrolls and buying a wand of Lesser Restoration with at least 20 charges. With all the poisonous vermin and animals I think we need to have that spell handy. We have already run into spiders once. [seconded]

8. Buy a new wand of CLW. [seconded]

Kedarn
Saturday August 7th, 2004 8:54:56 AM

Kedarn will go out in the morning and locate Andrath. When Kedarn finds Andrath he says "Lets get the items we took from the bandits identified and split it."

Kedarn will continue to look for Therodan when he is out.

Bralin
Sunday August 8th, 2004 8:59:26 PM

The dwarf accompanies Elerrin to the inn and agrees to split for a room. Heading to the common room, he awaits the bard.

Should Elerrin come along, it turns out Bralin enjoys a drink or two. Or three or four. A dozen isn't out of the question.
"The success of our quest!" he toasts loudly.

[Agreed on treasure]

Alkali
Monday August 9th, 2004 12:36:27 AM

Alkali enjoys being at home again, away from the nasty bugs and critters of the swamp, and no fear of attacks. Remembering the massive quatity of items acquired, Alkali walks over to Dolcet after the celebarations. "During our journey we found many items with magically auras. Could you help us identify what they are and there purpose? It would help a lot if we need to do more errands and stuff and.. it would be neat to see what magic we can use from it. Also how do you tinker?"

Lorth
Monday August 9th, 2004 10:31:29 AM

Lorth thanks the hermit for his views and then helps him do any daily chores and upkeep around the temple the next day. After finishing, he collects his equipment and goes to find the rest of his companions...

Andrath
Monday August 9th, 2004 6:03:56 PM

Andrath answers Kedarn, "I don't have a problem with sharing the items that I took from those bandits, but I would lay claim to the magical studded leather armour that I took from them, and have been wearing for the past week or so." [OOCC: The DMs informed me that the studded leather armour is +1.]

"Bralin is in possession of the magic wand that we took from the bandits, as well. Also, there is a magical rapier. The rest of the items are normal, as far as I could tell."

Here is the list of items from the bandits:
2 longswords
1 rapier (magic, in Andrath's possession, but not claimed by him)
3 sets of studded leather armour (one is magical +1, and claimed by Andrath)
3 shortbows
1 wand (magical, in Bralin's possession, arcane?)

Once he has given the items to Cadmar (except the armour), he makes his way to the bath, to wash off the trail dust and the smell from the swamp.

[OOC: I agree with the treasure approach. Andrath already has a +1 longsword, so he will only want the other magical longsword if it is better than that. Otherwise, Cadmar can sell it and spread the wealth as per the rest of the items sold.]

DM Bob & Carla
Monday August 9th, 2004 6:11:38 PM

Cadmar, Alkali, and Andrath enjoy a restorative sleep, and each is served breakfast in their room. Cadmar spends the morning reading Cassandra's Journal and taking inventory of the many items collected by the party. Alkali learns that with experience he can acquire the skills to change what a spell does by adding a new material component. After many years of study he will be able to use magic items as components, just like Schedar has. As a result of his participation in the coven formed with Schedar and Cassandra, the witches of the Coven of Weal are very kindly predisposed towards providing further instruction to the little witch. Around noon, Cadmar accompanies Andrath into town.

Kedarn locates Therodan. His old teacher shrugs his shoulders and informs the intense young cleric that some witches that make up the local coven may be aligned with Gargul, but others are just as likely to follow another god or no god at all. As far as he knows, the Coven of Weal is not aligned with any specific god. Putting a fatherly hand on the troubled elf's shoulder, he adds, "If it is any consolation, the coven is known for its good works in the area, and not believed to be aligned with evil. Some have even called them white witches."

Bralin and Elerinn enjoy the hospitality of the inn. The bard takes the stage, however his intricate musical phrasing and delicate story of lords and ladies is met with only a smattering of polite applause. His experimental adaptation of an archaic chant is less well received, as some of the rowdy crowd boo, and throw small bits of bread at the stage. With a sigh the minstrel takes out a large tambour and to the rhythmic drumming sings a song of epic adventure, followed in quick succession with a bawdy tale of a cuckold, his buxom young wife, and a traveling cooper. While Elerinn goes to bed at a reasonable hour, Bralin, with the aid of a few of the more sturdy locals, helps close down the bar!

Having passed an uncomfortable night on the hard cot, Lorth is awake before sunrise. His devotions to his god completed before the birds wake, the paladin is assigned the task of digging out the gnarled old stump of a willow tree blown over in a recent storm. The lone occupant of the small cottage where he is sent to work is a pretty young widow who shyly provides him with a jug of lemonade to quench his thirst.

With the sun directly above them, the party members cast no shadows as they make their way individually or in small groups towards the center of town and end up in front of the Adventurer's Board.

Cadmar  d20+2=8 d20+2=9
Tuesday August 10th, 2004 2:31:50 AM

Cadmar wakes up early. This will be a busy day. After a brief visit to his home to reassure his parents he is still all right he sets off to the main square.

When the party is standing at the adventurer's board he says: "Looks like it would be good to visit Magpie Crossing. It's to the east, at the Magpie Lake, near the Strongwind Castle." Somewhat quieter: "My brother is buried there."

"For good or for bad, it seems we will be enjoying travels in the same company for a bit longer. Does any of you have any pending quests or missions he would like our aid on, or are we free to look into the messages on the board?"

Then Cadmar sets about tying up various loose ends.

# He asks around Jarlswolf for someone who would know anything about the strange old symbol of Domi that has been found [Gather Info 8].

# He also tries to locate a healer who would be either able to cast Regeneration or use a scroll of Regeneration without a risk of failure [Gather Info 9].

# He finds the families of Lorinor and Gealan Flett and breaks to them the news of the demise of their members as gently as possible. He leaves them the letter and the money that has been found by the bones (8pp, 20 gp).

# He checks if Dulcet and Schedar are ready to discuss the fate of the mask.

Finally, in the late afternoon, the ranger walks over to the Coven of Weal and stands for a moment at Cassandra's door, heart beating. Finally he knocks. "Hello" - he says and smiles, suddenly no longer tense. "I came to learn more about your magic."

And he stays in the Coven talking with the young witch until late evening.

[Regarding loot:
1. As it seems the witches will not help us with identification this time I will take all magic items to the Catacombs to be identified. It seems the cheapest way to do that is to hire a high level caster to do the job with one spell. I will try to pay with the junk we have brought back (nonmasterwork weapons etc). Mail me/post if anybody prefers to have it handled in a different way. Greg, do you want your armor checked for any other magic abilities it might have?
2. Catacombs is no longer doing vouchers. This means we will loose lot of money if we sell items for cash. I am asking around if they came up with anything new. If they didn't I have an idea or two.
3. Greg, can you appraise the goblet and the holy symbol of Domi? We still don't know how much these are worth. Dear DMs, I assume the leather pouch is worth a standard 1 gold - correct me if I am wrong.
4. Potions that are party property: Cadmar will give Bralin one of the Potions of Bull strength he is carrying. Could Elerinn give Bralin one of the Potions of Expeditious Retreat? Is that OK with everyone?

More on loot when ID is done.]

Lorth
Tuesday August 10th, 2004 8:00:49 AM

Lorth meets his companions at the town message board. "Friends, I have this healing wand that I don't seem to use much. Since our other one is running low, I'd like to give this one to someone who will use it, during battle. It seems I have little time for that and I am not the best person to carry it. Who wants it?", says Lorth. He then takes out the wand and tries to hand it off.

Cadmar
Tuesday August 10th, 2004 9:17:51 AM

"I'll carry it. With my strength being what it is, I have been the least effective fighter among us anyway. We'll be better off if, during combat, I will be healing than swinging my blade at the air."

Bralin
Tuesday August 10th, 2004 9:23:39 AM

Bralin had forgotten all about the wand he'd picked up earlier. He passes it and the magical axe over to Cadmar for identification.

"I must go to Magpie Crossing," he responds to Cadmar.
"Time permitting, I desire to attend this gathering for the Woldian League."

Then, the dwarf turns to address Lorth directly.
"I would continue to journey with you, should you allow it."

Alkali
Tuesday August 10th, 2004 10:05:33 AM

Alkali arrives at the bulletin board finding Cadmar, Bralin and Lorth talking about where to go. "Mind if I come along again? I've been relieved from here so I could use a little fun."

Elerinn
Tuesday August 10th, 2004 6:18:08 PM

Elerinn puts one hand on the board, and reaches up to grab the notice that is addressed to the party members regarding Samuel and Sons Wagonmasters.

"We don't need to leave this up now, do we?" he asks as he pockets the notice. "Qamaro and I will accompany you, Bralin. Wynn was a good friend and I would like to pay my respects to his mother after we have visited Samuel and Marcus."

The blue black raven perched on top the board tilts his head and fixes his beady eye on the gnome.

Kedarn
Tuesday August 10th, 2004 6:40:10 PM

Feeling better about dealing with the Coven of Weal after talking with his old mentor Therodan, Kedarn will thank Therodan for his wisdom and then continue on his way to talk with the others.

When Kedarn meets up with the others Kedarn will tell them after reading the message board "by the looks of what is posted here I think we should be off for Magpie Crossing."

"Andrath, I am interested in the rapier that we recovered from the bandits."

Andrath  d20+9=26
Tuesday August 10th, 2004 6:40:48 PM

Walking with Cadmar to the Board, Andrath asks, "Is there anything of value still to be appraised?" He will look at the goblet and try to figure out its value. [OOC: Take 10 on appraise for a check of 19.] He will then have a look at the old holy symbol. [OOC: I rolled this check, since it might be an item that Andrath can't just take 10 on, with a result of 26.] "I don't think that I will need the armour further 'Identified', thanks. If it does have any other powers, then it will just be a surprise!"

At the board, Andrath says, "I will come with you to Magpie Crossing in an hour or so. I am interested in meeting with Feorges about apprenticing with him for a little while, to learn more about magic."

He pulls the rapier out of his backpack and hands it to Kedarn, saying, "If you can use this, then by all means, take it. You should have spoken up earlier. It was because I used the armour that I was able to find out its magical power. Now, we probably will need to get it 'Identified'.

Assuming the party will wait for his return, Andrath makes his way to Feorges' home, and knocks on the door.

[OOC: Great job keeping track of all the items and the hanging plot threads, Marcin. Thanks for looking after all of this. I propose, that since we will lose a fair bit of money if we sell the items and take cash, that we plan to go to the Catacombs as a party. If you do the negotiating, we can speak up from the background, and trade for what we need. Maybe we could meet there (i.e. post there) tomorrow night (Wednesday)? Even it we all can't post tomorrow, Marcin, you can post as if we all were there, and then we can post as necessary?]

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday August 10th, 2004 10:09:15 PM

Those who are congregated about the Adventurer's Board notice several opportunities at the other end of Cinnamon Valley. The Woldian League of Adventurer's meeting is still a few days off. If Bralin leaves Jarlswolf in a day or two, he should have no trouble making Magpie Crossing with time to spare for the open house. Elerinn and Alkali express an interest in visiting the community as well. The last of the items are appraised by Andrath who estimates the value of the goblet at 60 gp and the holy symbol at 25 gp. The party agrees to bring the treasure to the Catacombs for identification.

Although Cadmar is industrious in his enquiries, he learns little that he doesn't already know. The symbol of Domi in his possession is of very ancient make. Few are seen since the design is out of fashion. Regardless, it is an interesting artifact. Most of the Jarlswolf natives know about the young man's quest and just shake their head. "Have you tried the big city, lad?" queries an older gentleman in plain, but elegant traveling clothes. "You're bound to find a cleric of sufficient power in a big city. But, have you the means?" He gives Cadmar a sad look before moving on.

At the general store, Cadmar and those who have accompanied him learn that items from Flett's Fine Furniture are kept in stock and sold to those who can afford it. The craftsmanship is very fine indeed, although recent product has been a little less well made. The storekeeper volunteers that the Flett family business is located in Magpie Crossing next to the lumber mill.

Feorges invites Andrath into his sitting room and begins to question him at length. "Can you read?" he asks the elf. He places a tablet of paper before the rogue and asks him to write out a list of ingredients. The wizard paces the floor as he dictates. Finally, when the list is complete and the wizard has checked Andrath's work, he questions the elf on his motives. "I normally get young boys seeking an apprenticeship. Quiet boys, hard working, anxious to learn." He looks the rogue over, "You're a bit old to be picking up the profession. It takes some dedicated effort, lots of study. Why do you want to apprentice with me? I can't pay you much more than room and meals!" The wizard mutters on a bit, hardly listening to Andrath's reply. "Bother, I suppose you'll do. It's just for a short time mind you. Just until Kinnear returns. Come back tomorrow morning and we'll get started. Do you have a spell book? "

Later in the day as Cadmar makes his way towards the northern end of town, there is a tremendous BOOM. The ground shakes, and a dirty mushroom cloud the size of a large elm tree grows from the garden area behind Dulcet's manor house. Mel the cat streaks past as the door is opened by Cassandra herself, hair disheveled, and a sooty smudge on her cheek. A servant runs through the room and disappears through a door. The young witch exits into the front courtyard, and closes the door behind her. "I am sorry, but Dulcet and the others will be of no use to you this evening. It has taken all of the Coven's combined strength to help Schedar and to deal with the mask." Cassandra makes a vain attempt at smoothing her hair "Schedar is in seclusion and the mask is dispatched."

Looking up shyly at Cadmar, Cassandra will enquire, "will you be leaving again soon? Dulcet has asked to speak with all of you tomorrow. Can you bring the others?"

Cadmar
Wednesday August 11th, 2004 12:55:04 AM

"Of course we don't mind if you come along!" Cadmar replies to Alkali. "Well, at least I don't. Our two Gargulites might be still doing soul searching."

"The mask has been destroyed."

"Looks like we are bound for Magpie Crossing then, but can we delay our departure for one day? Dulcet has asked us to visit the Coven once again tomorrow."

[Guys, is it Ok if I use the mundane items taken from bandits to help pay the identification costs?
The ID cost will probably be quite steep, 700 gold or so, so there won't be that much nonmagic stuff left over as it is all worth about 950. Probably best to make our common trip to the Catacombs when we have divided everything and know how much each of us can afford to spend?]

Lorth
Wednesday August 11th, 2004 8:04:47 AM

Lorth hands the wand to Cadmar. Then turns to Bralin when addressed...
"I agreed to help you with your task at Magpie crossing, and unless Gargul himself blocks the way I will fulfill my promise.", Lorth replies to Bralin. "I am ready to depart when you are."

[OOC: Cadmar, the wand has 18 charges, CW1]

Kedarn
Wednesday August 11th, 2004 2:32:51 PM

Kedarn will tell the others "I have heard te the Coven of Weal is concidered to be 'White Witches' so I take that as they are on good terms with Gargul and I will have no issue dealing with them or others like them unless I see otherwise."

Kedarn will accompany the others to the meeting with Dulcet.

Andrath
Wednesday August 11th, 2004 6:01:52 PM

Andrath answers Feorges' questions, after writing out the dictation. He briefly describes his recent life with the group, and explains that he has two reasons for wanting to learn more about magic. "First, we have been dealing with witches and their magic, and I need to know more about these things so that I will understand what is going on. Second, I am the party's scout, and I think that there are a number of spells that would help me to be a better scout. I thought it would be better for me to be able to cast them myself, rather than have to bother the other spell casters. And I am not expecting any payment while I apprentice with you; only that you pass on some of your knowledge and skills. I will return tomorrow morning, hopefully with a 'spell book' in hand." Then the elf leaves the wizard's home, a little uncertain about what tomorrow will bring.

When he meets up with the party, Andrath asks, "Does anyone know what a 'spellbook' is? Apparently, I am going to need one if I am to apprentice as a wizard. Also, I need to spend at least another day here in Jarlswolf, to apprentice. Let's go and meet Dulcet first thing in the morning, then I can go to Feorges' to learn the art of wizardry."

After talking things over with the party, Andrath hurries off to the Catacombs to purchase a spellbook.

Bralin  d20+12=22
Wednesday August 11th, 2004 8:25:08 PM

Bralin dips his head in gratitude to Lorth.

Listening to the others, it appears they will be here a few days.
He answers Andrath's question -
"Tis a book used by wizards. They scribe the spells they have discovered upon a page, and refer to those pages each day to remember the spells they wish to cast."

Bralin decides to spend the down time creating a gift for Lorth. Purchasing a piece of marble from the Catacombs, the dwarf retreats to his room at the inn, and spends the day carving on it.

[OOC - I'm getting the marble, at 5 gp, from the Catacombs now. Final product will be worth 15 gp.
Craft (Stoneworking) check for 1 day's work. I'm voluntarily taking a DC of 18.
Check = 22 (success)
Completed (22x18) = 396 of 1500 cp thus far]

Alkali
Wednesday August 11th, 2004 11:02:58 PM

While others seem to have large assortment of activities to attend to Alkali just relaxes and waits on the group. Having nothing to do he spends the day practicing what little spellweaving he knows and helps around at the coven.

Cadmar
Thursday August 12th, 2004 3:14:45 AM

Cadmar accepts the wand handed him by Lorth.

"So" - he addresses Bralin - "what exactly is your task at Magpie Crossing? Are you free to discuss the details with us, or is that a discrete matter?"

When Andrath asks about a spellbook Cadmar is both surprised and excited. "So, are you going to learn a bit of wizardly magic, too? And Fergoes agreed to take you on as an apprentice? You lucky dog. When I asked him for the same thing he told me to he was too busy and I eventually had to figure out things by myself."

Cadmar takes out his book and opens it. Some pages are neatly commented on the margins, others are still a chaos of arcane symbols. "A family heirloom of mine. So far I have managed to figure out only a few of the spells. Once Fergoes has shown you the basics you can have a look inside if you wish. You might find a spell or two you will want to copy into your spellbook."

[Of 1st level spells Cadmar knows Mage Armor, Shield, Protection from Evil, Enlarge Person, Magic Weapon, Unseen Servant, Endure Elements, and Expeditious Retreat.]

Elerinn
Thursday August 12th, 2004 8:19:04 AM

Elerinn rises on tip=toes, craning his neck to peek into Cadmar's book. "Must be hard casting spells from all that chicken-scratch" he teases. The diminuitive sorcerer walks with Alkali back to Dulcet's home, promising to see them all later.

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday August 12th, 2004 8:34:15 AM

The party members gather around the Adventurer's board and discuss their plans. All have agreed to accompany Bralin to Magpie Crossing in a day or two. Armed with new insight into spellbooks and their use, Andrath rushes off to the catacombs where he is eventually joined by Cadmar, Kedarn and a few of the others. Alkali and Elerinn head for Dulcet's.

The rest of the day and evening pass by uneventfully, The party members find various ways to decompress from their ordeal in the Culverwood and spend time preparing for their meeting with Dulcet and their trip to Magpie Crossing.

[OOC: Feel free to multi-post over the weekend. Next DM post will likely be Sunday pm as both Carla and I are away for a couple of days. Remember to update your character sheets with any catacombs purchases]

Since Lorth has a few days, he goes to visit his mother for an evening then heads back to town in time to meet Dulcet.

Bralin
Thursday August 12th, 2004 1:35:42 PM

Responding to Cadmar, Bralin says, "Tis no secret. I journey to Magpie Crossing to inform the family of one Wynn Brightsong their kinsman lives and resides at Floating City."

The dwarf gets back to working the green stone as soon as he is able.

Cadmar
Friday August 13th, 2004 1:41:40 AM

"You do? Wynn used to travel with us for a while. A family business called him away from the life of adventure."

Marcin OOC
Friday August 13th, 2004 10:13:54 AM

[We have a delay in identifying items in the Catacombs. People there are checking if they can use Analyze Dweomer for us. If they can't and we have to go with Identify we are going to pay through our noses for the identification: over 1400 gold.]

Bralin
Friday August 13th, 2004 2:56:29 PM

"Aye," he dwarf responds to Cadmar. And then he stands, staring blank faced at the man while he ponders whether the paladin asked him a question concerning Wynn or not.

Deciding, eventually, that Cadmar was merely making a statement, Bralin nods briefly and makes to walk off.

Kedarn
Saturday August 14th, 2004 3:54:27 PM

Jasper OOC
Sunday August 15th, 2004 5:39:01 AM

Hey guys, I'm back from my rather long vacation to Central America and have just finished reading the Swords of Lights' latest adventures. I really loved it! Especially Lorth's doubts about using the witches' magic to return to Jarlswolf. Today, I make my first post again. I thank the one who played Elerinn while I was gone.

Elerinn
Sunday August 15th, 2004 6:20:16 AM

While Elerinn prepares for the Swords's visit to Dulcet in the evening, he reflects on the event that impressed him the most in the last few days.

It wasn't the removal of Cassandra's cursed mask, although the gnome was really glad the witch was free again. It wasn't the feral, yet wise, Denholm who showed him visions inside his little head. It wasn't Dulcet's half-sister who learned that the giants had been driven from the Valley and one of her half-sisters was still alive.

It was the dreamlike travel to the Lands of Gargul that impressed the little gnome the most. Although short and surreal, he saw the world of the dead. The thing that kept spinning through his head was the idea of his father 'living' somewhere in that chaotic realm of spirits. His father, Erinn, who could only function in the Wold inside the ordered enviroment of his library. The gnome wondered if there were people alive, besides himself, who still remembered his father.

Although he cannot block thoughts about his father completely from his mind, Elerinn is distracted for a while when he hears Cadmar has decided to study the arcane arts. Suddenly, this makes him realize he has lost the ability to cast one of his spells, probably because he doesn't use and practice it very much. But he feels another magic incantation has replaced it and he is anxious to find out what it is.

OOC: Since Elerinn turned level 4 some time ago, I can finally get rid of the Jump spell I gave him at level 1. Why did I ever do that? There hasn't been any opportunity to use it, once. I'll turn in my new character sheet soon, after I decide what spell I'm going to replace it with.

Andrath
Monday August 16th, 2004 12:26:55 AM

Early the next morning, Andrath meets up with the rest of the party, and says, "I purchased a 'spellbook' at the Catacombs last evening, and I am ready to meet with Feorges. But first, lets go visit with Dulcet and find out what she has to say to us about Schedar and the mask."

He answers Cadmar, "Let's see what Feorges can teach me, and then we can compare notes, alright?"

Cadmar
Monday August 16th, 2004 3:00:35 AM

"Yes, that would be a good idea. The inks are expensive, so, at least at this point, I have to watch every coin I spend."

"Speaking of coins and such, I am still working on the identification in the Catacombs."

"Cassandra told me the mask has been destroyed; I trust the word of Dulcet, but she asked to see us anyway, so I agree it would be a good idea to head to the Coven and talk to her."

Cadmar smiles. He doesn't mind seeing Cassandra again.

Cadmar on loot
Monday August 16th, 2004 3:11:36 AM

"Ah yes, I have the word back from the Catacombs. They can't use Analyze Dweomer for us. We will have to go with Identify, and that means 110 gold per item identified."

"We have four Identify spells on scrolls. I suggest we use them now. Elerinn, can you cast them on, say:

rapier
wand
bone pendant
dwarven waraxe?"

"Does anyone know the Identify spell? We have two pearls that could do as material components."

"I will have the rest of the items identified in the Catacombs. I will pay with mundane items first, using also the nonmagic stuff taken from the bandits. Is that all right with everyone?"

"Once this is done I will inform everyone what we have to share. Additionally, I will inquire if it is possible to buy an item that would cast identify once or twice per day. The cost of such thing would be, by my estimate, around 1500 gold, and it would save us lots of money in the long run. I will get back to you on how this one went."

Elerinn
Monday August 16th, 2004 4:07:41 AM

As Cadmar suggests, Elerinn takes the four scrolls of Identify and uses all to determine the properties of the rapier, wand, bone pendant and the dwarven waraxe. The gnome agrees on visiting Dulcet when he is finished. To Andrath, he says: "The arcane arts! A good choice, I know you won't regret it."

Kedarn
Monday August 16th, 2004 6:39:03 AM

"I have no problems with what you are doing with the items in the catacombs Cadmar, remember we need another wand of healing or a lesser restoration wand."

DM Bob & Carla
Monday August 16th, 2004 7:50:51 AM

The members of the Swords of Light pass another day of preparation in Jarlswolf. Kedarn and Lorth spend time with their families while the others pass an uneventful evening. Elerinn reflects on their journey and seems particularly enthralled with their brief sojourn through the shadowlands. The following day is spent by some at the catacombs while Kedarn volunteers his time assisting the local townsfolk. Most of their ailments are relatively straight forward but there is little he can do for Jendru, the farmer whose spine has been twisted since birth. Elerinn identifies four of the items from scrolls in his possession [+1 rapier, wand of enlarge person 7 chg, amulet of natural armor +1, +1 dwarven waraxe from Solgar's forge]. They recall that Dulcet had arranged to see them later in the afternoon.

Andrath spends a second day with Feorges where he is instructed in the finer arts of reading and writing magical script. What time is not spent reading and writing is spent preparing ingredients for potions and cleaning a seemingly endless supply of flasks and vials. Feorges works at a table across the room copying a number of basic spells into Andrath's book and periodically interjects to remind Andrath just how important it is for the vials to be 'spotless'. Finally he assists Andrath in copying the final 1st level spell into the book.

"You will need to study these each night. When you get back from Magpie Crossing with my supplies I will test you to see how well you have done." Feorges then hands the rogue a list of items that he has ordered from his supplier and provides a small card with a strange mark on it. "Show this card at Sarah's Potions and Salves and you will be assisted."

By late afternoon the party has regrouped and makes for Dulcet's manor where they are greeted by Cassandra and Mel. "Please come in and excuse the mess, we had a bit of an unfortunate accident."

Bralin
Monday August 16th, 2004 3:23:54 PM

Finishing up his work on his statuette for the day, Bralin dutifully shows up at Dulcet's manor at the appointed time.

When the witch bids them enter, he does so.

Alkali
Monday August 16th, 2004 5:53:28 PM

After wandering around town and doing his chores for the coven, Alkali returns to meet with the rest of the party to learn what Dulcet wants.

Andrath
Monday August 16th, 2004 10:46:53 PM

Andrath spends the day soaking in the magical knowledge imparted by the patient Feorges. He realizes that he is experiencing a crash course in wizardry, and that he will need to spend a lot of time over the next few weeks studying the information that has barely sunk in. As an added bonus, his hands have never been so clean after washing all the vials. He pockets the list and the card and promises, "I will do my best to learn what you have taught me. We are planning to leave for Magpie Crossing in the next day or so, and I will return with these items as quickly as possible. Thank you for your instruction, and your patience."

Andrath enters Dulcet's home, eager to look at the magical situations with his new understanding. He smiles at Cassandra, and says, "Well, I guess we don't need to worry about saying animal names anymore, do we? I am pleased to see that there are no lingering effects from the mask. Can you fill us in as to what happened to it?"

Cadmar
Tuesday August 17th, 2004 3:49:20 AM

Cadmar joins the party in a sour mood. He has spent some time with his family. The reception has been, as usual, rather cold. Aside from his father, the Gondaval Clan does not approve of Cadmar's decision to become an adventurer. Nobody asked how he has been doing or what happened to him. In addition, Cadmar got the telling off of his life when his sister Katrin picked up his scimitar and started playing with it. Apparently, his mother thinks one adventurer in a family is enough.

"I have sorted out identification in the Catacombs, but they told me it will be a few days before they can give us the results. I remember about the wands we want, but I thought we should see what are the other items before we decide what to pay for the wands with. It might turn out there will be something useless in the stash of loot we'll want to exchange for wands."

[The caster level on the wand of Enlarge Person is, I assume, 1?]

Elerinn

Elerinn greets his companions when they regroup at Dulcet's manor and asks Andrath how he is progressing in learning the arcane arts. When he sees Cadmar is in a bad mood, the gnome considers asking his friend what the problem is, but he doesn't. Instead, he only agrees with his friend about the wands.

When Cassandra greets him, Elerinn smiles at the witch and says: "So, have you adjusted to being yourself, and nothing but yourself again, yet?" He then waits to hear about the little accident.

Cassandra welcomes the party members into Dulcet's sitting room and offers them refreshments as they wait for the entire party to assemble. The more observant party members will note that Cassandra's hair and eyebrows have been singed unevenly.

"Yes, thank you all. I have fully recovered from my ordeal and seem to be suffering no lingering effects. I am most grateful to all of you for your help. I have asked Dulcet if the Coven can find some way to reward you on my behalf...she will be out in a moment. I'm afraid that dealing with the mask was rather more difficult than we had thought." The young witch waves her arm back towards the kitchen and back garden and continues, "It seems that quite alot of energy was stored in the mask and when tried to destroy it...well it all came out at once! The garden is a mess. All of the herbs will have to be replaced and most of the glass in the greenhouse too."

Once all the party members have arrived and been settled, Cassandra leaves to fetch Dulcet.
The older witch scans the room and stops briefly at Bralin. "I don't know you. Do I? I am Dulcet, Leader of the Coven of Weal and a member of the Pitchfork Council...and you are?" she asks politely.

Introductions over with, the elderly witch thanks the group for their aid to Cassandra in her time of need and for finding and recovering her half-sister Schedar whom she had long given up for dead. "Schedar was thought to be lost to us when the Jarl took her. No one had ever come back from the Jarl's dungeon before. She is resting now, but I fear it will take much time to put her mind at ease."

Dulcet then goes from person to person and takes their hand in gratitude. "I have put aside a number of items to recompense you all for your troubles. There would have been more, but some were lost in the ..ehem... incident".

The witch leads the party through the kitchen and into the back garden. It has been almost completely blackened and a crater almost 2 feet deep and six feet in diameter is centered in the garden.

Elerinn
Tuesday August 17th, 2004 5:11:49 PM

Elerinn greets Dulcet respectfully and silently follows her towards the back garden. When the sorcerer sees it has been terribly blackened and contains a crater that is pretty deep (especially for a gnome), he can't hide his amazement. In a youthfull, excited voice, he says: "Woah! And you were actually wearing that thing on your face, Cassandra!"

The gnome then looks at his companions and blushes. He feels somewhat embarrased for his youthfull enthousiasm and bows his head, looking at the scorched ground in front of him.

Kedarn
Tuesday August 17th, 2004 5:50:39 PM

Kedarn nods at the telling of the destruction of the mask then continues to listen to what Dulcet and the others say. Kedarn remains in quiet thought as he listens to everyone.

Bralin
Tuesday August 17th, 2004 7:32:04 PM

When Dulcet introduces herself and asks after Bralin, the dwarf ducks his head politely and responds.

"We have not met. I am Bralin Stoneminder, of the Clan Corregan."

The crater earns a raised eyebrow.
Strong magic indeed, he observes silently.

Andrath
Tuesday August 17th, 2004 11:58:31 PM

Andrath is more than a little awed at the signs of damage that Dulcet states was caused by the destruction of the mask. He thinks of the simple spells and prestidigitations that Feorges taught him over the past few days, and wonders if he will ever be able to tap into magic as powerful as he sees in the back yard.

"I am glad that we were able to help Cassandra, as well as help in re-uniting Schedar with the rest of your coven," he says to Dulcet when she returns.

Cadmar
Wednesday August 18th, 2004 1:43:01 AM

Seeing the crater in the garden Cadmar whistles. "Whoa, that must have been quite something. I hope you were not keeping salmonberry in this part of the garden? Or are we going to have to take a trip back to that cave?"

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday August 18th, 2004 8:03:35 AM

Dulcet leads the group carefully around the blackened crater. "It is a very good thing that you did not elect to destroy the mask yourselves" the witch profers, "for it's destructive power was far greater than even we had expected... and no master Gondaval, we did not lose the salmonberry so a return trip to the cave will not be needed."

Against the back wall of the garden a low stone shelf has a number of vials arrayed across it. "Please help yourselves to these," the witch indicates the seven vials, "they contain healing potion." [OOC 7x Cure Moderate Wounds]

The witch moves along the wall to a second stone shelf and another assemblage of vials. "These", she says "contain potions of agility and potions of strength." [4x Cat's Grace, 3x Bull's Strength]

Dulcet turns to face the group. "These are but small thanks for the help you have given us. I am re-united with my sister, Cassandra is free from the cursed mask, and you have welcomed Alkali into your band. Among the Coven of Weal you are all counted as friends. I hope you will feel free to call upon us when in need, much as we have called upon you."

The party comes to the conclusion that the Coven has no immediate tasks for the group and that they are free to pursue whatever endeavours they choose.

The dwarf nods gratefully to Dulcet and helps himself to a healing potion and a potion of Bulls Strength.

If no one else requires his services this day, he returns to his room at the inn to labor intensively on the marble block he recently purchased.

[Daily Craft check 19 vs voluntary DC 18.
Another 342 cp complete!]

Andrath
Thursday August 19th, 2004 12:04:21 AM

Again, Andrath states that he was glad to help the Coven, and thanks them for the potions. He selects one of the Cure potions, and one of the Bull's Strength potions. "I used one of these strength enhancing potions fighting trolls, so this will definitely come in handy. Now, we are headed off to Magpie Crossing, to tie up some loose ends. We can check back in with you when we return to Jarlswolf, if you would like."

Likely finished with the Coven, Andrath will make his way back to the inn for the night, to get ready for another day of travel in the morning. He spends a couple of hours reviewing his spell book and notes from Feorges before sleep.

Cadmar
Thursday August 19th, 2004 1:34:50 AM

"Thank you! These definitely will come in handy. Let's see, there is a healing potion for everyone, and seven other brews. Take your picks, I will have one healing potion and whatever is left of the others."

Cadmar, who doesn't feel like going home today, stays a bit at the Coven and asks Dulcet if she knows of any witches in the Valley who would be powerful enough to cast a Regeneration spell.

[Potions are at minimum caster levels, I assume?]

Elerinn
Thursday August 19th, 2004 4:25:53 AM

Elerinn picks one of the Cat's Grace potions and one of the healing potions and thanks Dulcet. When he understands the Coven has no need for any help right now, the gnome follows Andrath towards the inn and spends some time talking with the raven Qamaro before going to sleep early.

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday August 19th, 2004 7:57:42 AM

The party members select their potions and bid their farewells to Dulcet and Cassandra, except for Cadmar who remains behind to consult with Dulcet. "Regenerate is a very difficult spell to cast Master Gondaval" she explains. "There are none in this coven with enough skill." Dulcet mentally runs down the list of witches in the valley and shakes her head. "No, there are none that can cast that spell for you. The coven at Witchspawn might have the skill, but the price they would ask of you would be too high! No father would forgive his son for involving him so."

Dulcet ushers Cadmar from her home and gently closes the door behind him. Cassandra accompanies him down the footpath to the road where she kisses his cheek and thanks him for all his help and friendship.

Andrath, Elerinn, and Bralin return to their lodgings and spend a quiet evening.

[OOC Potions are at minimum caster level]

Kedarn
Thursday August 19th, 2004 9:49:41 AM

Kedarn goes and visits some with his former mentor.

Thudd the Barbarian (Catacombs Staffer----Nellie)
Thursday August 19th, 2004 10:03:13 AM

As Cadmar travels down the path he hears a loud pop. About a yard down the path, a 6'7" tall half-orc suddenly appears out of nowhere. Intricate tattoos cover the half-orc's massively muscular body. Wearing only a loin cloth and a huge two-handed sword strapped to his back, the figure is certainly intimidating. Shaking his head, he gets his bearings, and then unrolls a piece of parchment. He looks at it intently for several moments, and then looks up and spots Cadmar. A look of resolve on the big lug's face, he strides quickly toward Cadmar. "Are you the one called Cadmar?" the hulk calls out in common.

Cadmar
Thursday August 19th, 2004 1:39:22 PM

Cadmar departs from the home of Dulcet with both feelings of sadness, because it turns out to be very hard to find a caster capable of using Regeneration, and warmth in his heart, because he still feels the kiss of Cassandra on his cheek. Young boy promised her to come back as soon as the party returns to Jarlswolf.

Lost in thought, he almost has a heart attack when Thudd pops in and shouts out his name. Cadmar jumps up with a shriek, and his eyelid remains twitching for a good few minutes.

The ranger quickly goes over the list of people who might be out to get him.

"Yes, I am Cadmar, Cadmar of the Gondaval Clan" - he says cautiously while backing away from the half-orc. "What is it? Did I miss paying my taxes or something?"

Thudd the Barbarian (Catacombs Staffer----Nellie)
Thursday August 19th, 2004 7:46:20 PM

The half-orc looks down at the paper in front of him, and then back at Cadmar. He looks satisfied. "I am not familiar with these taxes to which you refer. I am Thudd. I was sent to deliver your items from the Catacombs."

The large warrior touches the earring that Cadmar now sees on his right ear. "Send now please" he says. There is another loud pop, and then a large box appears in front of Thudd. Turning the paper over, Thudd places it in front of Cadmar. As he does so, Cadmar can see that there is a life size illusion of Cadmar's face on the front of the paper. "Please place hand here for proof of delivery."

When Cadmar places his hand on the paper, a faint silver shine is emitted. Thudd snaps his right fingers and the paper disappears. Unsheathing his two handed sword, Thudd walks up to the box and prys the lid off with the blade. He pulls out 8 items wrapped in white cloth and a small grey pouch. "These are yours." The half-orc snaps his left fingers and another piece of paper appear in his hand which he gives over to Cadmar. Gracor said to give this to you." Without so much as another word, Thudd heads down the path about a yard, touches his earring and says "Bring back now". With another loud pop, the half-orc disappears.

When Cadmar looks at the sheet, he sees the following message written in neat, crisp hand writing...

Identification results
1) Pearl of power 1st level
2) Ring of protection +1
3) +1 chainshirt
4) +1 chainshirt
5) +1 longsword
6) Wand of magic missile (30 charges left)(found inside leather roll, which was not magical)
7) +1 Arrows x 18
8) +1 Dagger

Also note that after examination of your trade in goods, two items were found to be more valuable than the customer indicated. The 2 sets of studded leather armor were found to be of masterwork quality. The small wooden shield was actually composed of darkwood. In the future, please examine your items very carefully before submitting for trade in to avoid further miscommunications.

Sincerely,
Gracor the Great

Upon examination of the items in the box, Cadmar finds all of the items sent in for identification, as well as a small pouch containing 5 small white pearls (100gp each) and 54 gold pieces.

Andrath
Thursday August 19th, 2004 11:10:36 PM

In the morning, Andrath arises early so he can study his new spellbook, for the very first time. He stumbles a few times as he memorizes the spells for the day, but eventually masters them. Then he goes downstairs for breakfast, to ready himself for the trip to Magpie Crossing.

Upon hearing from Cadmar that all the items were not properly valued, he asks that all the items they have collected be laid out in front of him, and he carefully examines each one to determine its value. [OOC: Take 10 for Appraise checks as necessary, for resulting check of 19 for each of the items.]

[OOC: Marcin, Andrath is not interested in any of the magical items. If you want, you can sell them and share the money, or share the items around with those that can use them and sell the rest.]

Cadmar
Friday August 20th, 2004 2:54:59 AM

Cadmar sighs. Others might object to what he is about to say, but the paladin in him forces him to ask: "Are you sure you are not giving us too much gold? Two masterwork sets of armor are worth an extra 300 gold, and the darkwood shield is what, 50 more gold? How come we are getting back five hundred?"

[The wand of Magic Missile is at Caster Level 1, right?]

Once this is settled Cadmar picks up the crate and, his back bent under its weight, makes it to the inn.

In the morning he spreads the loot on the table and reads out the results of the identification for everyone to hear.

"In the future we probably need to carefully examine every item right after we find it, just like Andrath did. Well, how about we start for Magpie Crossing and discuss how to divide the items on our way there?"

[I'll post the list here once again, but if everyone can access their e-mails then let's take it off-board. Anyone objects to that?]

Items to be divided (Marcin)
Friday August 20th, 2004 3:23:30 AM

TAKEN FROM BANDITS:
wand of Enlarge Person, CL1, 7 charges
(This is pretty much outside of the normal treasure division. Whoever wants it take it; it doesn't get added to the Claimed Items list.)

POTIONS FROM DULCET:
7 potions of cure moderate wounds (Andrath, Bralin, Elerinn)
3 potions of bull strength (Andrath, Bralin)
4 potions of cat's grace (Elerinn)
(As everyone will get two potions of the same value I think it will be easiest to just divide them and do not add entries to the list. Make your choice; everyone gets CMW and either a Bull Str or Cat's Grace.)

MAGIC ITEMS TO BE DIVIDED:
amulet of natural armor +1 (2000 gold)
Pearl of power 1st level (1000 gold)
Ring of protection +1 (2000 gold)

+1 chainshirt (1250 gold)

Bralin
Friday August 20th, 2004 8:49:40 AM

The dwarf spends the evening carefully chipping and scraping his stone.

In the morning, he packs his gear and meets with his comrades. The items Cadmar brings back peak Bralin's interest. But, having already claimed the axe, he is loathe to claim more until the others have taken their share.

OOC - Bralin will lay a secondary claim on the amulet of natural armor. Anybody who wants it can take it, but if nobody wants it.....

Greg
Friday August 20th, 2004 5:57:54 PM

Let me rephrase my point about the treasure. I would prefer that we sell the treasure for the 90% value that we could get at the catacombs, and split the money 7 ways. That way, we could each buy what we wanted, instead of taking the treasure. With the flexibility of the Catacombs, and getting 90 cents on the dollar, it doesn't make sense to keep the items, unless one of them is exactly what you would purchase in the Catacombs, anyway. Andrath previously would have purchased a +1 longsword with his share of the treasure; that is why it made sense for him just to take the longsword. So, unless any of us wants a specific item from the treasure list, I say that we sell the items and purchase what we want.

Marcin OOC
Saturday August 21st, 2004 1:29:53 AM

Greg, the Catacombs are no longer giving vouchers. If I understand their policies right, we will get 60% of the value, not 90%, if we convert to cash. This would be a big loss, almost half of the value.

Greg OOC
Saturday August 21st, 2004 9:41:50 AM

Marcin, here is the line form the Catacombs information in the rules section of the site:

For all standard items in the DMG, the exchange rate is as follows:
Items sold or traded in the Catacombs will receive 90% of their total value listed in the DMG.
Any change due to the customer will be given in either gold or gems, whichever the customer prefers.

I read this as they will give us 90% regardless of whether it is in trade or cash/gems. I will post on the Catacombs manager's site to confirm.

Marcin OOC
Saturday August 21st, 2004 2:35:56 PM

They do? That would be great! Please do confirm, and if nobody wants any of the items for his/her own we can do as you say with the rest.

(Dear DMs, maybe you could remove OOC chatter in a few days)
