Savin Wednesday July 28th, 2004 12:15:54 AM
Savin is content with his boots for now but does take a set of gear and replaces the warm weather gear he brought with him, with the gear the elderly lady brought.
He will then go to the supplies of coal and load up his Hewards haversack with as much as he can. Since the haversack was almost empty, he will take quite a bit. (I figure he has around 65 pounds of coal if he can get that much)
If the group is going to get a chance to rest for the evening, Savin will let his wounds heal on their own. If not he will ask Isidur for a cure.
Niobe Wednesday July 28th, 2004 12:28:08 AM
When Savin starts his juggling act Niobe stays nearby. She is duely impressed by his moves, though she would never bother to do any fancy 'acrobatics' like he is doing. The minute there is an opportunity to talk to him one on one she seizes it. She know that she got caught staring. "I just want to let you know that I am not angry. You can be so darn charming when you want to be; barring that nasty thing you did to my ear..." She pauses to watch Savin's face for any reaction. Niobe grins, "forgive me for staring. I am just curious to figure you out. You are a mystery you know." She leaves that statement hanging. Notably she hasn't kicked Savin yet, so that should be a good sign. The thief will find herself somewhere to sit before the barbarian women arrive. She remembers how shy Savin seemed toward her that first night in Hook City.
Niobe sits back and watches while the barbarian women kit up her companions. She keeps to herself while observing the goings on. She is pleased that her gear seems to be good enough for the people here. When Elonee tells her that she is too thin Niobe smiles warmly. She isn't about to agrue with someone she feels just might be able to pick her up and toss her around like a feather pillow.
((OOC: Niobe is wearing a Ring of Sustenance & Endure Elements (continuous), Boots of Elvenkind & Winterland, and cold weather outfit with arctic fox fur trim on the hood, cuffs and hem))
Sly and Luke Wednesday July 28th, 2004 8:45:46 AM
Sly watches the elder woman enter with the two younger woman. He listens to what she has to say, a little sad to learn that they have no magic of their own, Sly was hoping to meet a wizard here so he could get a Lightning Spell from them. But he does what the woman tell him to do, he strips and stand before her in his winter underwear. Then he puts on his winter clothing, over that he puts on his Mithral Chainmail with the trimming of wolf fur, except the hood on his chainmail, it seem to be lined with fur. Last he dawns the overcoat and checks the pockets to see if he has water and enough coals, he almost bearfoot so he put his boots of Winterland on his feet.
Now that he is satisfied that he has every thing he need and ready to go on the hunt, Sly takes out his Ivory and Gold little chest opens it and takes out the golden key. Inserts the key into the little chest's loock and turn it "Poof" there at Sly's feet is is a Large Ivory and Gold Chest. Sly put in every thing that is not in use at this time, then look to the others "if you have anything that you are not using, put it into this chest. I will store the chest in another demintion for next we need them." Sly will wait untill the party decides what they don't need to take with them at this time.
Peerimus and Yorrick Wednesday July 28th, 2004 12:00:05 PM
Peerimus nods when he is addressed and thanks them upon completion. Peerimus will go to the stables and return with the pocketed blankets for Luke and Yorrick and will attach one to Yorrick to get a good idea of how it should be set. While doing so, "We should stay the night here and leave at first light."
Peerimus will also try on the coat to get a feel for it as well over his armor. "ingenious" to no one in particular.
Providing the group stays the night, First Light finds the druid just outside wrapped head to toe in fur and blankets enjoying the smell of unspoiled air and the exhuberation that comes with filling your lungs with frosty breaths. He prepares the following spells:
Level 0: Detect magic Mending x2 Create water Guidance Purify Food and Drink
Level 1: Pass w/o a Trace Endure Elements X3 Speak with Animals
Level 2: Hold Animal Extended Endure Elements X3 Flame Blade
Level 3: Dominate Animal Protection from Energy x3
Presage the Coming of Battle (DM/Al) Wednesday July 28th, 2004 11:43:04 PM
Quiet time is spent preparing for the enemy; both the orcs and the cold.
Niobe speaks to Savin. Peerimus speaks to all. Aside, from that, however, there is a silence disturbed only by the slide of strap and buckle. The sounds of preparation and provisioning.
Peerimus makes a trip to the stables, and examines the gear for the animals. In addition to gear for Luke and Yorrick, there are special blankets for each of the ponies as well.
In the midst of the preparations the inner tent flap opens, and a tiny figure bundled in white wolf fur trundles into the tent. It runs into the middle of the group. Then it stops stock still, only now realizing that this tent is occupied. Large dark inquisitive eyes look up at the patchwork collection of outlanders standing around the tent. It is a chubby faced barbarian girl, no more than three years old. Caution and wonder battle back and forth within her eyes. Finally, she speaks. "Sky is angry," she says.
She bites the edge of her furred clad glove, then turns and runs back out. Those that follow will be treated to a sight rarely seen anywhere in the Wold. Upon the horizon clouds of the darkest densest gray billow over the plains. From where you stand you can see that the land below is in gloom, cut off from the sun. Bright flashes illuminate sections of dark cloud like small explosions within a lantern. The flares are random, yet rhythmic. No sound reaches this far, yet you can imagine what the din might be like to one directly below. That alone would be spectacular enough. But, above the clouds the sky also shimmers with color. A band of shifting light, like an ethereal bolt of celestial cloth dances above the dark mass of clouds.
(Survival DC15 to know this is happening directly to the south.)
It is no more than two hours after high noon. You still have some four hours of daylight.
[[ You may leave now or after a nights rest. Go ahead, set the time of your departure yourselves. You may put yourselves on the trail too, if you'd like. Don't forget to roll tracking. If you don't, I'll set you on the trail with tomorrows post. ]]
Ilsidur 2d8(5+2)+9=16 Thursday July 29th, 2004 12:13:28 AM
Ilsidur casts a cure spell on Savin, healing the monk for 16 hp of damage. "Is that enough?"
Then the dwarf says, "I would prefer if we can wait until morning to leave. If we think that we can track the orcs in the morning, it would mean not having to spend a night out in the cold, when many of us won't be able to move. Also, I will be able to petition the powers of the Wold for spells that can help us against the cold. But if we insist on leaving now, so be it."
He gathers together his warm items from the ladies, and thanks them for the work on his armour, and the items that they have provided. Regardless of whether they leave now, or at first light, Ilsidur will don the undergarment with the coal pocket, waterskin and food pouch, filling the coal, water and food pockets appropriately. He will don his fur-lined armour, and his cloak of comfort. He will ready his snowshoes to put on if the snow is deep. "I am ready to travel. Has everyone outfitted themselves? I do have some spells that we can use to protect from the cold, but I would prefer to keep them until they become necessary."
When the young girl comes in to tell them about the wierd sky, Ilsidur moves outside to see what is going on. "I wonder what that means," he thinks to himself.
Savin Thursday July 29th, 2004 12:36:20 AM
Savin is cured by Ilsidur and thanks the dwarf. "Yes I feel much better. Thankyou."
When Niobe pulls him aside and talks to him he answer, "I am grateful you aren't angry. I wouldn't want you angry with me. I am not a mystery. I am the most simple of men. What you see is what you get." Savin blushes and adds, "I hope you like what you see."
Savin votes to stay the night. The orcs natural hunting time is at night and they would have the advantage. Let's leave in the morning.
Sly and Luke Thursday July 29th, 2004 10:49:30 AM
Sly look around asking, "Alright then I will close the chest and send it to another demintion". Sly closes the lid, lock it with the Gold Key *PuFF* away the chest goes and on the floor there's a small (snuff box size) Ivory and Gold Box. Sly picks it up opens the lid, puts away the little Gold key. Sly put the little box away.
"It sound like bad weather to me, I think like the all of you, better off leaving tomorow. Now let's get all the rest we can, I have a hounch that we will not be able to rest for a long time. Come on Luke let's rest over here."
Sly will go to Yurric and Luke, then sits between them, "Nice and cozy" There Sly will take out his Magic Book of Spells, pen, a pot of ink and a sheet of parchment paper.
Sly cosentrait on Scribing a spell on to the paper, A Lighting Spell for he knows will come in handy. After he is done he'll put the scroll with the orther three scrolls.
OOC: Scribing Scrolls is a feat of his since he was a level one wizard.
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+20=25 d20+20=33 Thursday July 29th, 2004 10:50:54 AM
Peerimus nods and is glad that Ilsidur and Savin both so quickly put forth two additional reasons to stay til morning. The little girl enters and the druid looks down at her and smiles warmly and then at her words his brow furroughs and he follows her outside. [Survival 25] "To the south of us." he states to any that came to look as well "and with us, almost assuredly the direction we will be heading." Peerimus stays outside for some time both studying the storm and looking for tell tale signs of how long it may last and if it is moving towards them. It does give him mind of a different spell though, that of Call Lightning, and Call Lightning Storm.
Peerimus will spend the rest of the day trying to assist in any manual labor the barbarians are working on through the camp and while doing so will bring up the storm to the south. He will try and find out what they know of that direction, have they seen such a storm before and if one has ever ventured this far north.
In his morning rituals, Peerimus will pray for the following spells: Level 0: Detect magic Mending x2 Create water Guidance Purify Food and Drink
Level 1: Pass w/o a Trace Endure Elements X3 Speak with Animals
Level 2: Hold Animal Extended Endure Elements X3 Flame Blade
Level 3: Dominate Animal Call Lighting Protection from Energy x2
He will wrap Yorrick in the special animal blanket with pockets and fill them with some warm coals and then don one himself. "We should leave the ponies and pack Sly's chest with food and water for us."
When all are ready and outside he gives Yorrick a heavy and firm pat saying, "Tou ouama Mae'aatou." Yorrick moves out pick up and track the orcs. [Survival 33, Yorrick will move at half speed 20]
Shiraz Thursday July 29th, 2004 5:25:46 PM
Shiraz nods, "Leaving in the morning is best." Shiraz carefully takes of his armor and gear, preparing to sleep. "And thats a great idea about Slys chest, Peerimus." In teh mornign Shiraz will carefully don his cold wether gear provided by the tribe making sure to load the metal box with glowing embers. "Stepping out into the morning light Shiraz looks to the east and prepares.
Niobe d20+7=14 d20+9=12 d20+9=21 d20+10=13 d20+10=17 Thursday July 29th, 2004 6:57:12 PM
Niobe smiles pleasantly at Savin, "I do like what I see; quite a lot actually." She mirrors one of Savin's actions from earlier and gives him a quick kiss on the cheek. "I would say that for once I am very, very lucky with the company I keep. Wouldn't you agree Savin?" Niobe winks, "one day you will make some lucky lady very happy!" She smiles brightly but does not add anything more to that statement. Niobe gives the monk some time to think what she has said through before being distracted by the small child talking about bad weather coming.
The Half Elf thief would never claim to be a simple person, because she often ends up "changing" herself to seem to be what others might want in order to better "blend in" while working. She doubts that she could just simply be 'herself'.
The thief/ranger follows the child to see just how bad that weather is. She does not recognize that it is directly to the south of them however. She does pay attention when Peerimus notes that it is to the south of them though.
"Peerimus do you reckon that storm is magical in nature? It looks too odd to be natural I think." Niobe is not certain of the nature of the storm, she is just guessing. She watches the storm for a few seconds more before asking any other questions.
"I vote for staying the night and getting what rest we can." She gives the druid and his bear companion Yorrick a benign, inquisitve look. "I suppose that Yorrick won't let a 'little storm' impede on his tracking of the orcs in the morning? There isn't really any point in leaving now with the day almost over and all." There is no hostility in Niobe's voice, just a neutral tone. With any luck she might get an answer before Peerimus heads off to do some task or other for the hosts.
Like the rest of the Children she will eventually find something to do to make herself useful. Niobe is certain that at least the women around here might find some task for a skinny, little southern lass to do. Later she will go early to bed if she gets the chance.
================================================
The next morning Niobe will make sure that she is up early (for once) and ready to go as quickly as possible. If there is any discussion of bringing the horses along she will state that she would much rather leave them here and go on foot to the orc camp. She honestly doesn't believe that the orcs would have enough to steal to warrent bringing horses. Just for kicks she looks the orc tracks over and finds nothing truly useful from them. She quietly concedes to herself that Peerimus was right about Yorrick being the better tracker. Without further ado she decides to keep a look out for anything out of place or anyone/anything lurking about instead as they set out for the orc encampment.
Jason of Aisildur Thursday July 29th, 2004 8:26:32 PM
Jason stops as he wraps the big overcoat around his shoulders. He listens to the others agree to leave the next morning.
"But I'm..." the paladin thinks twice of mustering a complaint, and then simply nods,
"Of course. Tomorrow it is then." Jason then begins to undo and take off all that he has, and then prepares to do the same in reverse the next morning.
Once undressed, he resumes tending to his weapons and shield, unless the other members decide they have other plans.
Tracking Across Ice Vein (DM/Al) Thursday July 29th, 2004 10:47:08 PM
As the Children of Chaos gather at the sight of the orc battle, snippets of the previous day's activities come unbidden to memory.
Sly Foxx recalls his frustration of the night before. Creating a magic scroll from a spell one already knows is difficult enough work. Without that spell in one's spell book, however, the difficulty soars to the heights of impossibility. In the end, Sly is not able to recreate the Call Lightening spell from the tales he has heard. It is just too difficult without a sample of the spell itself.
For Peerimus the mornings view of the clouded horizon brings back his questions of the day before. Today, the clouds remain. What's more, they seem no closer than they were the day before. Nor do they appear to be moving in any particular direction. The druid's experience with weather patterns also tells him that this area is not due for a storm any time soon. The air here is cold and dry, and does not have the heaviness that usually precedes such phenomena. Yesterday, many of the barbarians had stopped to watch the distant clouds too, as though, for them, the display was as much an awe inspiring treat as it was for the outlanders. When asked, the barbarians tell Peerimus that these storms are not really so unusual. But that they almost always stay in the mountains to the south. They tell him, however, that the damage to the village was recently caused by just such a storm.
Today is overcast, unlike the startling brightness of two days ago, a comfort for the eyes. To the south, the dark clouds still spark with light under the rippling borealis.
Yorrick snuffs at the ground, wrapped in the special blanket. Luke too sports a smaller version. Yorrick's eyes rove for the spoor and his nose casts for the orcish scent. Then, he is off, following a trail that Niobe recognizes only after the fact.
Occasionally the great bear will snuff and then canter after a particularly promising lead. But, by and large, the pace is even. Even leisurely. There is plenty of time to look around. And under the gray and trackless sky, over the white and trackless plain, one gets the sense that nature is very large, and that man is very small.
An hour and a half passes. The sun, through the gray cloud cover still hangs over the horizon. In the distance, the approaching ice seems to darken. Approaching nearer, the sound of tortured squeals drifts across the frozen ground to your ears. A half hour more, and it becomes clear that the dark ice is, in fact, water. A great dark body of water that grows as you approach until it fills your view. Huge floes of ice drift within. They grind against each other with high pitched complaints, turning the silent plains live with sound.
Yorrick lumbers on, veering right along the shore. You follow, with the awe inspiring sea stretching away on your left.
Two more hours pass. The sun behind the gray cloud cover is well on it's way toward the height of noon. Four hours out in the cold of Ice Vein and none of the debilitating effects of the first march have yet appeared.
Two more hours following Yorrick beside the great sea, and it is noon. For the last half hour, those without magical protection have felt the comforting warmth against their backs begin to cool and die away.

Savin boots of winterland d20+13=22 d20+13=31 Thursday July 29th, 2004 11:06:42 PM
Savin will hold his cheek and blush when Niobe kisses it. He won't say anything but his eyes find themselves drifting back to the pretty thief unconciously.
The next day, Savin will march along with the others trying to get a feel for what they are following. He is awed of the ocean and hopes they won't have to try and travel out on the ice floats. It looks very dangerous.
He will put himself incharge of the coals for his companions, and will refresh the coals from his haversack for both the animals (ooc are we bringing them?) and the party.
Savin will do a roving patrol on his own by circling the group that moves so much slower than he does. He will dart 50 yards the left and right, behind and ahead at random times and at random patterns. He will listen for anything that sounds or looks like not a normal part of the terrain. (ooc spot check 22 listen check 31)
Shiraz : Barbarian Winter Gear Friday July 30th, 2004 3:15:12 PM
Shiraz immediatly annimates his shield as they walk and stays about 10 feet behind Yorrick. Every few minutes Shiraz unsheathes each of his swords 1 at a time and then resheathes them, "So the frost doesnt get to them." Shiraz says when he notices someone glancing at him.
Sly and Luke d20+2=13 d20+5=21 d20+5=25 Friday July 30th, 2004 4:39:45 PM
Sly like the rest of the party, follow the Yurrick the bear and Niobe. but it is getting chilly. "want a little magic to strat a fire, also where are we going to camp for the night?"
occ; Sly 21 for spoting and Luke 25 for spoting anything.
A Fish Trap! (DM/Al) Friday July 30th, 2004 11:45:20 PM
The stop at noon is brief. Savin opens a flap of his haversack and directly on top are the hot coals. The ones directly on top are as cool as those in the iron packs. But those in the center still glow red with warmth. There might be enough left at the end, for one more refill amongst those that really need it.
The ground is frozen, and as yielding as steel. The spent coals and ashes will not be buried here. Fortunately, they disappear without a trace when emptied into the waters between the cracked ice of the dark sea.
The pursuit continues.
Those with the inclination to notice such things may see that the shore is curving to the south. It's quite easy to see this, as the dark bank of storm clouds turns more and more to come face on into the path of your vision. The clouds tower above, filling the eye with it's monumental apocalyptic light show.
Yorrick suddenly stops short. He blows out a snort of hot breath, and gives a low moan of uncertainty. His massive head swings around to find his human friend.
Niobe, however, is the first to spot the source of the ursine's confusion: Tracks. The ranger kneels on the frozen ground and studies the tale the tracks would yield. Where as, before there was only the tracks belonging to the raiding party of seven orcs making it's way along the shore, now there are at least 15. The track of 15 orcs, in layers both old and new.
Luke spots it first. He growls low with warning. Then Savin and Sly see it too. At the water's edge; the stake and the rope tied to it. The outdoors inclined might notice that the ice encrusted on the rope is not as heavy as it might be. (Survival vs. DC15 to figure that the rope must have been pulled up at least once today.) And those sharp of eye, might see the square shape at the end of the rope lying in moderately shallow water: a fish trap. At this spot, the orcs have laid a fish trap.
It is now two hours since the noon rest stop.
Ilsidur Saturday July 31st, 2004 1:20:24 AM
Ilsidur plods along with the rest of the Children, following the tracking skills of the ranger and the bear. At lunch, Ilsidur chews the warm food from inside his body pouch, and drinks some of the water from the pouch. He fills the coal pouch from Savin's haversack, and thanks the monk for keeping them warm.
He smiles and answers Shiraz' advice about the swords getting stuck in the the scabbard, "My axe flames when I need it to, so it should get rid of any frost. We can even use it to warm ourselves up if we get stuck."
When they reach the fish trap, Ilsidur suggests, "Why don't we set ourselves up here, within sight of the trap. We can either ambush the orcs when they return, or if only a couple of them come to check the trap, we can follow them back to their camp."
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+20=32 Saturday July 31st, 2004 9:46:46 AM
Peerimus moves with Yorrick in particular euphoria. The unbridled power and majesty that Mother Wold has on display here is overwhelming. Never did he hope to think he would be this close to Her and Father in the sky to the south. Several times he nearly stops as he gazes about, pure ecstacy traced across his face.
Yorrick stops and huffs and Peerimus is beside him in seconds reassuring him. Agreeing with Niobe [Survival 32 on the tracks] Peerimus Lets all know, "Looks like the orcs are here at least once a day. If we camp it should be well away. The orcs know this area and will see us as something that is out of place I fear if we are too close even withthe white wolf pelts we wear. That said we should make camp though. Move off the shores inland and hope to find trenchable ground."
Peerimus moves to Yorrick and checks his gear and then does his best on his own. It looks like our natural cold gear will soon be consumed. I have 3 spells that should last 24 hours and 3 that will last 12. With that Peerimus breathes out a whispering chant like that of frost and air clinging to glass while reaching a hand to touch his forehead and that of Yorrick [Cast Extended Endure Elements Cold, shared with Yorrick]
Jason of Aisildur Sunday August 1st, 2004 12:39:43 AM
Through all of their efforts, Jason has been able to endure the cold. He is amazed at the perseverance of the group, and how easily they adapt. When his coals start to die, and are then replaced by Savin, he thanks the monk, and continues on.
When the group stops to examine the rope and fish trap, Jason kneels and says a quiet prayer to Domi. He overhears possible options.
"Lying in wait for the enemy is not an act of courage." he begins. The paladin soon realizes he will not get far with the arguement, so changes his approach.
"However," he continues, "risking ones life against evil, regardless of the presentation, is perhaps courageous in itself." with that, the paladin waits to see what the group decides, and at the same time, mentally prepares for both a battle, or simple observation.
Sly and Luke Sunday August 1st, 2004 9:10:55 AM
Sly tell Ilsidur "You know I could have carried extra charcoal in the Ivory and golds trunk, but if you need extra Fire Spell. I have one that I renew every day!" Sly smiles at Ilsidur. (Oh! how sly love to rease Ilsidur)
Sly goes to stand next to Peerimus,"This is beautiful country, But the cold is a killer. You know if we come back this way again, I would Like to raid the Fish Traps and bring the catch back to our Barbarians Friends. But firtst we have to make a visit to our new Orcken Enermies. About fifteen of them Huh! Well that should give us some excersise for the day. What do you think??" Sly smiles at Peerimus.
Peerimus and Yorrick Sunday August 1st, 2004 11:03:02 AM
post correction: Peerimus was talking to everyone when he said, "It looks like our natural cold gear will soon be consumed. I have 3 spells that should last 24 hours and 3 that will last 12."
Savin Sunday August 1st, 2004 9:39:36 PM
Savin looks at the group and is surprised they are talking about stopping and waiting. He will pipe up, "Your logic is faulty. They may only come to this spot one a week. Can we afford to stay and wait? We have limited coal to keep people warm. I doubt the village or camp is to far away. You want to be close to your food source.
They are also now alerted. We drove off that raid rather easily and they might change their tactics. They have to know there is a new player at the game. I say we push on. We don't want this party to warn their leader the black dragon about us. I say we try to capture and destroy the raiders before they can.
I can speed ahead if you want. My magic and training is suited for this. I am not a tracker but hopefully even I can track 15 orcs in the snow. I would ask for someway to help me find my way back though."
Niobe d20+7=27 d20+7=23 d20+10=13 Monday August 2nd, 2004 12:37:35 AM
Niobe studies the tracks and then studies the fish trap and its line.
"I would have to agree with Peerimus that the orcs probably do come here once a day. The rope and the trap don't seem to be weighted down right now."
She looks at the tracks again.
"Anyway my best guess is that a large number of orcs were here quite recently as well as at least a day or two ago."
Niobe considers whether camping and waiting or pushing on right away will be best. To her both Savin and Peerimus have good ideas. Niobe is certain that she will have no trouble following these tracks.
"Why don't we do both? Peerimus if you and Yorrick can find a good camp site near here then Savin and I could scout ahead a bit. I am pretty certain that I could find our way back here without any trouble."
The Half-Elf doesn't look very pleased with the idea however.
"The only problem is that we would be splitting up. I have a feeling that the orcs that emptied that trap are not all that far off. Also the day is just barely half over, I would rather that we moved on from here in the direction of these tracks."
Having said her piece Niobe waits to hear whether or not her ideas have any merit.
Jason of Aisildur Monday August 2nd, 2004 5:44:16 AM
"Savin has a very good point, one I did not even consider." Jason says, "If we have a choice, I think we should try and track them further, at least until are coals are down. We can then start a fire and obtain some more." Jason looks over at the fish trap.
"I have my doubts, given that they know we are here, and, as Savin says, a new player, that they will be returning for such convenient food." the paladin states. He then turns directly to Savin,
"The trouble with Niobe and yourself going alone, is that if you encounter them, come upon them, what will you do. You may not be able to take them down yourself, and the time wasted in you finding them, returning to us, and then us following you back to where they WERE, may allow them to get to that very goal you mentioned...the black dragon." he finishes.
Sly and Luke Monday August 2nd, 2004 5:59:46 PM
"NO!No! I don't want the two of you go tracking alone, I don't trust Orcs. Let's stick together. Safty in numbers." Sly look at the fish Trap, "I wonder if we could make an Orc trap?"
Luke stich around Yurrick.
Justin Webber (DM) Fishing Traps&Talks Monday August 2nd, 2004 9:02:19 PM
The group talks about what they should do next. Ideas are broughtup and shot down while others are thought on some.
One thing you can notice is you listen carefully (listen:15) is that your voices are carrying pretty good but that soon will stop as the thunder and flashes of lightning in the sky start up with renewed vigor.
Savin Monday August 2nd, 2004 10:59:19 PM
Savin will ask the people who are using the special winter gear but also have magic, "Why are you wasting the fuel. We should only give it to the people who need it."
Savin will then look at the storm and say, "We might need to find some cover. That storm looks nasty."
Ilsidur Monday August 2nd, 2004 11:11:47 PM
[OOC: Al, you stated that only some of the PC's need the coals, and you did not list Ilsidur. However, Ilsidur took damage from his cold armour. Is it safe to assume that the wolfskin trim that the barbarians added to his armour stop the cold damage that was caused by the armour without the wolf fur trim?]
Ilsidur says, "Alright, we can keep tracking the orcs, until we either find them, their campsite, or until night finds us. Peerimus, can you change shape into something other than a big bear? What about changing into a bird that lives in this cold? You could probably cover a lot more ground, flying ahead and scouting. And it is unlikely that the orcs will attack a bird, especially if you stay high enough. When you spot them, you can backtrack and let us know how far ahead they are, and we can decide whether or not to attack tonight, or camp."
Al: Yes, that's what that modification is for.
Shiraz : Barbarian Winter Gear Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 4:48:58 AM
Shiraz watches his nature oriented friends and shrugs his shoulders, "We should push forward if tracks can be deciphered. The longer we stay out here the owrse it gets for all of us."
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+5=22 d20+20=33 Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 11:22:24 AM
Peerimus nods to Ilsidur, "I can." Peerimus will remind everyone to talk in muted tones as thier voices carry further in these great open spaces, especially the deeper bass's of Shiraz and Ilsidur.
Peerimus moves over to the great taur, "A spell of protection against the cold." and places an extended Endure Cold on him.
"Yorrick will lead you on while I look ahead by air." He whispers to Yorrick, gives his large head a hug and shifts to that of a gray and white feathered eagle and takes wing.
Peerimus climbs quickly over the next minute to 400 feet and then speeds off down the shore in the direction the group had been tracking the orcs looking for a settlement. [Spot 33]
Niobe d20+10=27 Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 8:13:14 PM
Niobe inwardly berates herself for forgetting that voices carry. She looks up at the storm and wastes no time in heading off to follow the tracks. They can make camp when it becomes necessary. The thief would have liked to hear more about Sly's orc trap idea before leaving here. His trap idea might have potential.
"I am not using anything from that tribe. It seems that what I had from before was good enough. Barring the fact that I am too skinny..." Niobe very quietly says this so Savin will know without doubt that she has not been given anything from the barbarians, and is in fact not using any of the coal. The last sentence was purely for the sake of humor.
(Listen 27)
Savin Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 9:31:21 PM
Savin will hear Niobe's remark and say, "Oh I don't know. You look just fine to me." He mouth with snap shut and he will blush. "I can't believe I said that outloud."
Savin will then go examine the fish trap more carefully. He will try to pull it up to see if anything is in it.
Justin Webber (DM) Suprise Tuesday August 3rd, 2004 11:53:13 PM
Everyone talks about the storm abit before Niobe begins to move to follow the tracks, Savin goes to pull up the fish trap and Peerimus begins to change and take flight to scout also.
Peerimus has just switched forms to that of a eagle and took flight when you hear a loud screech from him. Niobe hears the crunching of boots in snow also just as Peerimus screeches in his eagle form.
Something really unexpected has happened and up ahead coming at a flat out run are a totall of eight orcs, instead of fifteen. You don't have much time to wonder where the others might be as the eight you see are hooting a hollering in the cold and waving spears and large clubs in the air.
(The orcs are currently alittle over 90ft away and closing fast)
Jason of Aisildur Wednesday August 4th, 2004 6:20:47 AM
Jason's first instinct is to run and meet the creatures in battle. Then he thinks better, knowing there were more orcs than the eight he sees.
"If we hold, the others may present themselves!" he calls out in common. He then sets his body, removes his overcoat quickly, places his shield in front and sword held to the side, ready to attack only when the orcs come to him, or if the group moves forward. As he waits, he scans the horizon to see if there are archers about waiting to shoot the children down.
Sly and Luke 3d4(3+2+4)+6=15 Wednesday August 4th, 2004 7:50:27 AM
Sly readies his magic, he will sent three magic missles to the first orc that come into his sight. (Damages 15hp)Sly will ready for the first assult with weapon at the ready (looking the his enermy strait in the eyes.
But to Jason, Sly tell him "Hold your position! Let the orcs come to you, use their running speed against them."
To Luke "Luke let them come into attack range, you know when"
Shiraz : Barbarian Winter Gear AC 26 Hps 84 Wednesday August 4th, 2004 9:56:44 AM
Shiraz hardly glances at his comrades trusting them to do the right thing as he swiftly draws his swords. Shiraz's blood begins to heat as he begins to swing his arms around , realizing that his overcoat is a bit tight for such action the minotaur sheathes his swords and quickly removes the coat.
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+20=28 Wednesday August 4th, 2004 10:09:30 AM
Being perfectly confident the 8 orcs are hardly a real threat, Peerimus continues to climb and circle out looking for more orcs. [Spot 28]
Yorrick lumbers about behind Shiraz for a moment before standing and issueing a challenging roar to the orcs.

Niobe smiles and then chortles very lowly to herself at Savin's comment and was going to reply when the orcs make their presence known. Being further ahead of the others she whips out her composite longbow and fires off two arrows at the nearest running orc the first chance she gets.
(Rapid Shot feat, Hits AC 26 & 17 for 5 & 9 dmg)
((I am presuming that the orcs will take 2 rounds to get to our positions.))
Ilsidur (AC23, 98/98 hp, Righteous might) Wednesday August 4th, 2004 10:38:15 PM
Ilsidur moves 30' closer to the orcs, and then casts Righteous Might on himself, quickly growing to double his size.
Savin ac 22 hps 76/76 Wednesday August 4th, 2004 11:09:04 PM
Savin will see the orcs coming and release his hold on the trap rope. He will crack the bones in his neck and then his fingers. He will then quickly circle to the side of the group preparing for a flanking attack.
Closing (DM/Al) Wednesday August 4th, 2004 11:11:05 PM
Peerimus in the air, Yorrick on the ground, Savin by the fish trap, the rest in a tight circle stand against the charging orcs.
A flick of Sly's fingers sends burning bolts of light in the direction of the orc. They slam into one, raising a howl and the steam of scorched orc-flesh.
Niobe draws her bow and gets off a single shot. It takes an orc cleanly in the shoulder.
The Children of Chaos prepare to meet the charge, each in his or her own inimitable way.
[[ OoC: the Orcs are at 30 feet and still coming. ]] [[ Niobe: Rapid Shot requires a full attack action. If you drew your bow, then you couldn't use Rapid Shot. ]]
Sly and Luke d4+2=6 d4+2=5 d4+2=4 Thursday August 5th, 2004 8:35:35 AM
Sly thinks to himself (and a little bit out loud)"Orc are a little slow in all this ice and snow. Hmmm! I wonder what they do if I send them a few Magic Missels??" Sly send three magic missels to the orc ahead of all the others. "Poo Doo! Poo Doo! Poo Doo!" off goes three magic missels one behind the other.(Sly is getting fancie in his old age??)
For the next round Sly readies True Strike Spell on himself.

Yorrick stands his ground, now 30' behind Shiraz and Ilsidur growling at the incoming orcs.
Savin ac 22 hps 76 Thursday August 5th, 2004 7:46:03 PM
Savin will keep moving around in a flanking position preparing to dart in when the chance arrives.
OOC Al, I think we posted at the same time last night, so please look back and include my post from yesterday
Niobe (HP 67/67, AC 19), (Ring of Sustenance & Endure Elements (continuous), Boots of Elvenkind & Winterland, and cold weather outfit with arctic fox fur trim on the hood, cuffs and hem) d20+12=30 d20+12=23 d8+2=8 d8+2=8 Thursday August 5th, 2004 9:33:41 PM
Since it looks like there is time for one more volley before the orcs close Niobe fires her bow again. She concentrates on hitting whichever orc seems easiest to target. Immediately after firing the shots she will toss her bow out to side to avoid it being damaged in the skirmish. It will of course be retrieved once the orcs are routed.
(Rapid Shot feat, Hits AC 30 & 23 for 8 & 8 dmg)
((I wasn't sure whether the feat applied yesterday, so I figured better one shot too many than one too few. I knew you guys would set it straight.)) ;)
Ilsidur (AC23, 118/118 hp, Righteous Might) d20+19=20 Thursday August 5th, 2004 11:31:30 PM
Ilsidur looks eye-to-eye with Shiraz. [OOC: The dwarf is now almost 9' tall, and is 'Large' size, due to the righteous might spell.] He smiles and says, "The air is really much better up here." Then he charges 30' forward to attack the largest, most dangerous-appearing orc, swinging his flaming waraxe. However, he still has not become used to his new, large size, and swings wildly, totally missing his target. [OOC: rolled a natural 1 to hit the orc.]

The orcs rush in, one having a smoldering spot in the center of it's chest where more of Sly's magic missles had hit it. The other one who is injured has two more of Niobe's arrows sticking out it but the orc doesn't stop.
The orc's close in on this round and now begin their attack on those they reach, two of them turn to go after Savin since the ground is flat and it is hard for him to sneak on them.
Orc#1&4 attack Sly. Both are howling in a rage that sounds much like a barbarian. Both stab at the elf twice in quick and powerful strikes with their spears. (To hit Orc#1:AC:24/9 Damage:9/8 To hit Orc#4:AC:16/7 Damage:5/9)
Orc#2 moves quickly in to attack Niobe, it also being the same one she has shot twice. It swings it's large club two handed in a powerful downward blow, it also howling but not in a frenzy like the others. (To hit:26/21 Damage:14/10)
Orc#3 runs in and attacks Shiraz, it goes into a berzerked fury when he is attacked by Shiraz on the AoA presented. The orc swings it's club in a two handed bash quickly. (To hit:12/25*crit miss* Damage:5/6)
Orc#5 rushes in to attack Jason, the orc makes quick jabs with his spear at the paladin as it growls viciously. (To hit:21/15 Damage:7/5)
Orc#6 rushes Ilsidur and stabs at his with a spear also. This orc has mroe scars then the previous orcs and looks to be a better fighter maybe. (To hit:17/25*crit miss* Damage:6/7)
Orc#7&8 rush Savin as he tries to move in a flanking position. Both come to each side of Savin as they stab quickly with their spears. (To hit orc#7:21/8 Damage:8+8=16 To hit orc#8:13/17 Damage:5+9=14)
(OOC: Since the orcs were running in I believe it should inspire a AoA from each person they attacked.)
Peerimus could swear as he circles over head that he seen some snow moving in a couple patches below during the battle but he can not be sure as the movements was to subtle to get any real idea. Everyone, sorry for my confusing post. To hit:12/25*crit miss* Damage:5/6). This means that the orc had two attacks hitting AC's:12/25 missed his critical and would of done damage:5/6.
The ones stating orc# is because you were attacked by more then one orc and also so you know which orc is which.
I'm sorry for the confusion and will post the combat differently next time. I wasn't sure if this would be easier to understand or not. Please also post AC-hit points, etc in your posts. If you need farther clearification then I can re-make my post of this round so it will be easier to understand. Sorry once more for the confusion everyone.

Niobe (HP 43/67, AC 19) d20+9=28 d20+12=19 d3+2=4 Friday August 6th, 2004 5:40:19 PM
Niobe is surprised by the first blow but 'goes with' the second blow, now on her knees she grins wolfishly at her opponent. She is hurting. Yet with surprising alacrity and ferocity she slams her 'fist' home into the orc's vulnerable 'sensitive area'. She is using an underhand palm strike (sort of like an 'open fist') with the heel of her palm as the strike point. By doing so she has all of the force of her arm behind the blow. Niobe looks positively evil as she tumbles backwards away from the orc. (cirka 15ft I think)'I hope that hurt!'. Niobe waits expectantly for the orc to sink to his knees or at least double over and sing soprano.
(Hits AC 28, 4 dmg (not too bad I guess...), tumble 19)

Jason attacks and kills orc#5. The orc laying still now as it bleeds out on the ground.
Niobe moves as quick as she can and tumbles to a flanking position on the orc she stunned with her unarmed attack. The orc still looks to be in enough pain that it hasn't noticed.
Savin swings at orc#8 and lands two hard punches and misses with his third. The first blow harming the orc but it succeeds in shaking off the effects of the stun.
Peerimus flies in and calls lightning and hits orc#5. The orc howls in anger as the stroke of lightning injures the orc and it looks flusterated and maybe abit more upset.
Shiraz moves over to aid Ilsidur and hammers his blows down on Orc#15 which drops the orc in a bloody heap on the ground.
Ilsidur attacks Orc#14, his axe drinking in orc bloob but not killing his orc. The orc stands clutching abit at a bad wound though before readying to attack.
Sly attacks Orc#4 with shocking graps, the orc yelping as it is shocked and it glares at Sly.
Yorrick moves in and grapples Orc#4 after giving it a sweep of it's claws from one paw. The orc howls in pain as it wiggles in the bears graps.
Orc#2 is stunned yet and clutching his private arrea.
Orc#4 hangs in Yorrick's graps and struggles to get out of the bears grip.
Orc#8 growls and continues it's attack on Savin, it being more upset now that it has been punched a few times. (Can hit AC:13/14 Damage:missed)
Orc#9&10 take aim at Sly as they pick their target and fire arrows at him. (Can hit AC:12/14 23/10 Damage:6/8 6/6)

Orc#14 gets ahold of itself and quickly sends a double thrust at Ilsidur. (Can hit AC:27/12 Damage:10/5)

Jason Staggers back, in awe that Domi had granted him such good fortune. Watching the orc before him fall, he looks skyward in thanks. That move proves detrimental, for a second and third arrow come zooming toward him. The second in the volley strikes, near knocking the wind from him as he looks to the orc who sent them.
Jason then moves quickly, closing in on and attacking the orc, trying to put an end to his missile attacks. His aim, as before seems off, perhaps the arrows are having a greater affect than he thought, for his aim is surely off as he swings.

Niobe moves quickly and stabs the orc she groin shot earlier, with a wicked stab in the back. The orc goes through a few convulsions before falling to the snowy ground.
Ilsidur slashes with his war axe, giving the orc he is against the last final swings it needed. Ilsidur watches in satisfaction as the orc colapses into the snow, blood coloring the snow quickly.
Yorrick squeezes orc#4 tightly and people close to him can hear bones crackle and Luke's bite to the orc as it hangs in Yorrick's great paws finishes that orc off also.
Sly flings a fireball at orc#10, the fireball erupting and hitting the other couple orcs with it and also causing the area which is alittle dark from the storm to suddenly lightup for some distance till the fireball flashes out. All of the orcs seem to take the blunt of the fireball except one who got off a lucky dodge of most of the flames.
Jason moves in on one of the archer orcs and attacks it. Hitting with his first hit and injuring the slightly smoldering orc more. Jason's second hit though misses the orc.
Savin punches at the orc he has been fighting. His first miss hitting but his last two taking the orc down quickly and he advances on the orc archers quickly.
Peerimus lands alittle ways behind the orc archers and uses his call lightning to send a bolt of lightning at the 5th one. The orc taks the full blast of the lightning though and looks once again annoyed. (took off some point of the roll considering you landed behind the orc and he wouldn't really be expecting it.)
Shiraz moves in on one of the archer orcs and swings at it. His weapon finds a firm hit also and leaves the orc staggering from a nasty wound but still living.
The last remaining orcs are the 5 archer orcs who are now smoking, bleeding and in some what bad shape, considering they are out numbered. Without a second thought they all quickly turn and begin running as fast as they can away.
Shiraz : AC 26 Hps 84 Dodge against current opponent <AC 27> Wednesday August 11th, 2004 2:57:44 AM

Jason of Aisildur AC=23 HP=47/61 Wednesday August 11th, 2004 7:30:59 AM
As Shiraz speaks, Jason looks down at his body, searching for any scorch marks. Fighting nearby the fireball blast, the paladin is amazed and eternally greatful to Domi that he did not suffer any burns.
"Domi be praised!" he says aloud. He then turns to the big Minotaur, and shakes,
"I am injured, but I will ask Domi to heal me after I offer my services to the other members of the group." he states. The paladin then asks the other members,
"Does anyone require healing of their wounds?"
OOC: Jason can "lay hands" for upto 27hp per day. Being able to distribute them as he sees fit, he will split them evenly amongst those who need healing, and any that are left over he will use on himself to a maximum on himself of 14 (for full healing).

Sly want to give another roasting, But the party is too close. "Hmmm! My magic is working better since our Barbarian frinds altered my armor. Pick up those white fur capes! They'll come in handy as we try to hide in this snow."
To Jason, Sly tell him "I'm sorry that you got a little bit of my magic on you, next time I use my magic, stand a little bit behind me. Untill I can control my fire balls better.
I need a little healing and Luke nee some too. But he can wait." Sly will go and pick up a few cloaks, clean them so they can be used to hide under.

Peerimus calls another bolt down to strike orc#9 [Reflex DC 15 Dmg 13] as they flee and then shifts back to human form.
"They shall head straight home and should make an easily followed trail." he says as he walks back to the group. Peerimus removes a wand from a side pouch.
"It is good of you to offer Jason, but save those blessings in case they are needed in combat later."
Peerimus will use a charge on Sly [19], a charge on Niobe [20], a charge on Jason [12] and one on Luke [19].
Ilsidur (AC24, 62/98 hp) Wednesday August 11th, 2004 5:47:14 PM
Ilsidur feels the powerful spell leave his body, as he watches the orcs run off. He shrinks back to his normal size, and joins the rest of the party. "I also have healing that I can use if anyone needs it." If no-one asks for healing, the dwarf starts to move the bodies of the orcs together, and strip them of their gear, looking for valuables. Once all the gear has been piled together, the cleric will cast detect magic on all of it, trying to find any magic items.
Niobe (HP 63/67, AC 19) d20+6=21 Wednesday August 11th, 2004 6:08:24 PM
Niobe calmly wipes the blood off of her dagger on the orc's clothing after the orc has sagged to the ground quite dead.
She puts away her dagger and retrieves her bow; slinging it across her back for safe keeping.
The thief absolutely welcomes the healing that Peerimus has given her. "Thank you Peerimus."
Niobe will assist Ilsidur with the looting of the bodies. She exhibits morbid glee while executing this task. Stealthily she pockets a few small baubles as she works (coins (she will take the ones with the highest value), gems, rings, anything small enough to palm.)(Sleight of hand 21).
(Sleight of hand 21)
Jason of Aisildur AC=23, HP=59/61 Wednesday August 11th, 2004 6:50:02 PM
Jason accepts the healing from Peerimus, appreciating the man's wisdom, and saving his call to Domi for healing until perhaps it is more critically needed.
When the paladin watches Ilsidur and Niobe begin their "Looting", he turns in annoyed disgust. He tries not to make his feelings known, for he appreicates the hospitality the group has given him. Still, his honor and belief system force a displeasant taste in his mouth as he witnesses the robbing that takes place.
"Because these creatures used their items for evil, I can accept, just accept, the acts you perform.", he says more to himself than for others to hear. He then walks as far as he can from the bodies as the "lifting" of goods is performed. He will return only to see that the bodies are burned, or buried.
Savin AC 22 hps 76/76 d20+10=30 d20+10=29 d10+4=14 Wednesday August 11th, 2004 9:58:41 PM
Savin is getting tired of being ambushed and then having the ambushers run away. He does something he rarely does. He loses his temper and sprints towards fleeing orcs as fast as he can. He will try to cut them off or if not catch up to a straggler and take another down.
OOC Justin you better let me use these rolls. Wow! Crititcal hit 28 points of damage
Remember Savin had circled away from the others for two combat rounds before the others came to him. His base speed is 60' so I should be able to catch someone eventually. My boots give me perfect footing even on ice.

Savin chases down the orcs quickly and is able to hit one, hitting the orc hard enough to drop it where it stands.
Peerimus's stroke of lightning hits one of the retreating orcs in the back and sends it flying out in the snow and then it lays motionless.
After collecting of the barbarian orcs stuff the group has a total of 2 two handed clubs and 8 spears and lastly two bone bows and 2 quivers with 5 arrows in them a piece. lsidur's detect magic spell turns up that none of the following radiate magic though.
The group also finds 4 gold rings and 3 gold necklaces. Only 2 rings though are shown to the group and both necklaces. The other 2 rings going into Niobe's pocket.
Peerimus and Yorrick 3d8(1+6+8)+5=20 Thursday August 12th, 2004 3:32:51 PM
Peerimus will use the wand on Ilsidur as well of course, [20]. Peerimus is not interested in anything the orcs had but understands anyone elses interest. After all, it's why some heed the call of adventure in the first place.
To Jason on the burial or burning though, "We are in no position to do either. We lack the material for burning or the implements for burying. We are standing on an essetial ice sheet, but" he adds seeing the constrenation starting to cross the paladins face, "we can commit the bodies to the sea and ask Mother Wold to care for them."
Assuming this is agreeable for Jason Peerimus will assist him in the 'burial' of the orcs though he will leave it up to Jason to verbalize any thoughts or prayer to thier keeping.
Jason of Aisildur Thursday August 12th, 2004 5:59:03 PM
Jason nods as Peerimus suggests burial by sea.
"It is unusual, but it is acceptable." he says. The paladin then takes the bodies, with the help of any who will, and one by one allows them to slip into the icy waters.
When all the bodies are placed in the water, Jason falls to one knee, and begins.
"Domi, Lord of Courage, Guardian of Honor. Though these creatures were evil, and deserved their fate, they were also warriors, and fought bravely. Allow them your blessing as fighters and creatures of the battlefield." He prays. Jason then rises and joins his friends.
He puts his overcoat back on, knowing the battlelust will cool soon, and his body will grow cold without it.
Sly and Luke Thursday August 12th, 2004 7:13:53 PM
Sly stands there in silance, When the service from Peerimus and Jason are over. Sly tell them "Well done, Domi will be happy with us."
Savin Thursday August 12th, 2004 9:02:15 PM
Savin will drag his dead orc back and add it to the pile of dead. He will look on impassively while they start to slip them into the water.
"We don't have time for this. The others are getting away!" he will comment.
Niobe Thursday August 12th, 2004 11:42:44 PM
Being too busy with looting she completely misses Jason's unfavorable reaction to the looting of the bodies. The thief is pleased with she few items she was able to secretly spirit away. Niobe doesn't care one way or the other if the dead orcs are buried or not. She agrees with Savin that they don't really have time to clean up after the battle.
Justin Webber (DM) Funeral Rites Friday August 13th, 2004 1:45:22 AM
The group goes about burying the dead in the lake. You can only hope that the barbarian tribe you guys left don't find this to be bad when you return and if you tell them about burial and lake.
Just as the last body is pushes into the lake Savin brings up a good comment on the remaining orcs having had a nice head start now on the group.
The sky is still flashing with lightning and every now and then a bolt streacks down and hits one of the ice spikes but doesn't seem to injure it any.
Peerimus and Yorrick Friday August 13th, 2004 9:08:02 AM
Peerimus remains standing and silent as Jason commits a prayer to Domi, but does bow his head. The task done he moves to pursue the orcs down the now more than obvious trail in the snow. "It took no more time to cast them to the waters than it took to search for valuables Savin. But you are right and we should be going."
Peeerimus will move off down the orcs trail at a hustle, with Yorrick easily keeping pace.
Jason of Aisildur Friday August 13th, 2004 9:33:21 AM
"I am sorry if I have delayed us unneccesarily, but I am a warrior of honor, and Domi would have it no other way." Jason states.
Ready to move, the paladin falls in line, prepared to move at what ever pace the group required, in order to catch the fleeing orcs.
In his mind, Jason felt no regret for what he had done. Few people would see the sense in burial for such evil, and even fewer understood his committment to honor and courage above all else.
The paladin moves to Niobe, having an odd sense of needing to resolve something with her.
"You and I both appear to be...Children of Chaos. It is odd that one such as myself would be chosen to be a part of something chaotic, unless it were to maintain a balance within the group." he looks down at her face, and continues,
"You decided to rifle through the belongings of those we killed, and that is your perogative, and your soul must bare it. I realized a while ago that not all creatures in this Wold follow the ways of Domi, but it makes them no less in his eyes, for he loves them all." He then moves a bit ahead of her, but turns back to make one final comment.
"We will agree to disagree fair Niobe. I see the good in you, and it is that I will focus on." He then simple gathers his things, and is ready to leave.
Sly and Luke Friday August 13th, 2004 7:59:31 PM
Sly look over the cloaks of the dead Ors "White fur? We could be almost invisable in the snow???" But his attention is drawn to Paladin Jason and Niobe, "Oh! Oh! I better have a little talk with Jason." Sly puts the Cloaks into the Magic chest of his.
Walks to where Jason is and walk along with him. "Jason! How can I explain this?? I know that Niobe is a thief and she has promise that she will not steal from any of us. Remember that she IS wearing the Mark of the Witches, Just like yours on your hand. We all have our talents, we were all chosen to battle Chaos, Niobe is a fine tracker, lock picker, disarm almost any traps. She is very talented and she also had a very hard life. So go a little easy on her, she might just save your life someday."
Jason of Aisildur Friday August 13th, 2004 10:27:24 PM
"Thank you for your words." Jason says to Sly. He then turns to him.
"I too was chosen, and I believe I was chosen to not only learn, and to help, but to be true to myself and to what I believe in." he looks back at Niobe for a moment, then back to Sly,
"She is exactly as you said, fine at all she does. And she is good of heart, I can feel that. As I said to her, we will agree to disagree on her means, for I know her motives to have goodness at their heart." he smiles at Sly, then moves along, without further comment unless spoken to.
Savin Friday August 13th, 2004 11:11:45 PM
Savin will search his orc not so much for valuables, which are nice but really to see how they keep themselves warm in this winter wonderland.
After he is done, he will commit him to the deep and start his patrolling that he was doing before.
Niobe d20+3=16 d20+8=28 Saturday August 14th, 2004 4:35:23 PM
Niobe patiently listens to what Jason has to say. She waits for the lecture about a sacred duty to save her from herself - but it does not come. Niobe is surprised but does not show it at all.
"No vows to save me from myself?" She raises a brow in careful inquiry. She sounds both curious and expectant; but not rude at all.
Without missing a beat she continues, "I guess I can agree with you about balance. You and I are probably as different as oil and water." Niobe's tone is very jocular. She laughs.
Thief doesn't comment on the good/bad issue; clearly Jason is a law-abiding "good guy", and she is certainly more morally flexible - and knows it.
"Agreeing to disagree is probably the wisest course Jason. I will do my best to respect your sensibilities when I can." She gives Jason a friendly smile.
Sly; nice diplomat that he is, steps in to see to it that everything goes smoothly. Niobe smiles a bit wider at his description of her. She seriously wonders where he got the idea that she had a hard life though. She could have been a pampered "princess" if she had done like her father wanted her to do...
"I am glad you both have some faith in me. You can count on me not leaving anyone in a lurch."
The thief adds a little quip just in case. "Also, I do intend to include you in my little oath Jason. Your possessions are safe from me."
Everytime Niobe is even remotely tempted to think about nicking anything belonging to any of the other Children she focuses her thoughts on the cursed weasel statue. That tends to keep her behaving, besides they are all seemingly nice gentlemen and travelling alone gets tedious fast!

Jason was pleased with the rogue's reply. Despite himself, he found her oddly charming, and she had a wit that he had found in few others he had encountered.
"I am sure our journey together will be...interesting if nothing else." he said, smiling at her as he commented.

Sly and Luke Sunday August 15th, 2004 10:32:42 AM
Sly smiles at the both of Jason and Niobe, "There will come a time where the both of you will have to depend on each one of us just to suvive. Now let's us go eother tracking or find some where to bed for the night. Come! Luke! lets go."
Sly put's away the little snuff box back into his pouch. Telling anybody in ear shot, "If I should ever fall or die, in this Chest is every thing I own. Take it and remember me in your heart." Sly will now leave and follow the others.
Justin Webber (DM) Tracking Sunday August 15th, 2004 1:29:12 PM
The bodies having been looted and put to rest in the water the group slowly moves off.
Savin does find out in his searches of the bodies that the orcs wore heavy wolf skin tunics and pants and the cloaks also helped keep them warm clearly. Otherwise the orcs had no other means to keep them warm which either means that citizens of Ice Vein have an atural resistence to the cold or the camp isn't to far away.
The traveling across the icy ground is slow and it steadly grows alittle darker outside as the storm begins to rage on and the wind has kicked up to rather stronger gusts. It has also to everyones suprise or maybe dismay has began to snow. The trail you follow is pretty clear yet as some place have blood showing on the ground but so far no signs of orcs.
You can figure that if the storm continues to get worse then you may have to stop or risk being in a possible blizzard or something of that nature here in the frozen land.
(OOC:I'm sorry for such a late post everyone. I will also try to make my post alittle later tomorrow in hopes that maybe everyone will beable to make it in and post. I know that some of you have trouble posting to weekend posts which I give a apology for now.)

Sly follow the trackers in silence, until the snow starts to fly. "Ahh! Domi! what do you have in mind now?" But to the rest of his friends, he ask "Alright I'm open to any ideas??"
Luke chimes in "Me too!"
Ilsidur Monday August 16th, 2004 10:17:58 PM
Once again, the Children of Chaos are unprepared for the climate of the Ice Vein. "Next time, we should bring one of the barbarians with us. I am sure that they would know how to safely weather this coming storm. If we can find a large drift, we might be able to tunnel into the side of it and make a small cave. I definitely don't think that we can travel much farther. Peerimus, can you change into a snow owl, and scout out around us for a mile or so for a safe place to spend the night?"
Savin Monday August 16th, 2004 11:19:11 PM
Savin frowns at the snow and berates himself for not taking a prisoner when he had a chance. "We could have had him show us where the stupid village is."
"Peerimus, if you can fly high and try to spot something that might be helpful but if the blizzard starts, get back to us or you might get lost."
Shiraz Tuesday August 17th, 2004 1:30:05 AM

Peerimus and Yorrick d20+20=33 Tuesday August 17th, 2004 10:43:04 AM
Peerimus looks up at the clouds, wind and falling snow and smiles a genuine smile. Yorrick buts into his side bringing him out of his euphoric daze and to the harsh reality that the snow means.
Peerimus looks back to Ilsidur, "Have faith friend, we have what we need to ride her out and I was gifted the spells to compensate for Ice Vein for those without magical aid already."
Peerimus will shift again to an eagle and take wing looking for an area where the snow has drifted, and thus revealing a place where a cave could be dug. [Spot 33]
Yorrick gives a small growl and moves to a more protective position near Luke as his friend flies off.
Jason of Aisildur Tuesday August 17th, 2004 11:50:49 AM
Jason moves to stand beside the Minotaur as the group mulls over a plan.
"The weather in this land is far from the fair skies of my homeland." he begins, "I suspect few of us may survive such a storm unless we find, or make shelter." he looks about, overhears the idea of tunnel digging.
"Certainly digging into the snow will offer us some warmth, and likely allow us to start a fire that few eyes will see. That could allow us to make some more embers for our 'pots'." he finishes.
Jason will press on if it is agreed, but personally feels stopping now, with time to build or find shelter, might be the best option.
Justin Webber (DM) Spotting a Camp Tuesday August 17th, 2004 1:14:48 PM
Everyone continues on alittle as Peerimus takes to the air again in his bird form.
As Peerimus circles and looks over the area he sees two things. About a 1/2 mile off is a place that would be great for camping. Almost 1 1/2 off is also a large camp set in the middle of a whole bunch of the ice spikes. The place has bee picked wisely considering the ice spikes offer some protection and also defensive. Whatever the orcs and half-orcs may be they aren't dumb.
Peerimus can not see no movement in the camp as the blowing snow does obscure his vision inless he flies closer. This leaves a nasty decision as the wind has picked up much more and lightning now is streaking the sky every few seconds. The snow has began to fall in large snow flakes and even pellets of sleet have began to fall.
The group on foot get pelted by the sleet, snow and the winds. None of which is causing much problems but there is a growing new concern and thats the wind seems to be slightly warmer which means that the sleet pellets that fall from the sky will be water before long and that means frozen water on the ground and on each person inless shelter is found.
Peerimus [extended endure elements] Yorrick [Cold weather gear] Tuesday August 17th, 2004 5:56:42 PM
Peerimus wings back and passes low over the group with a great cry Skreeeee! heading in the direction he thinks to make camp. Flying quickly, he will race ahead hoping they know his meaning in his flyby and perhaps save Savin should arrive well before the group.
Shifting to human, he pulls off his furs, 2 yard squares of canvas, 50' rope and his 16 pitons and drops them on the ground. The druid then assumes a great bear and begins to dig in on the leeward side, every now and then he will issue forth a bellow to help guide in the group.
Sly and Luke and Yurrick Tuesday August 17th, 2004 8:20:01 PM
Sly tighten his cloak around his body, and pulls his hood down a little ferther down over his face. As the bird flies by, Sly shouts so every body can hear him in this wind,"Hey! Look there's our druid pointing the way. Come on just a little ways longer and we'll have shelter."
Sly pats Luke and scratches Yurrick ear,"Alright you two follow the Peerimus, GO!" Off the go, but not too far ahead of the group.
Savin d20+13=15 d20+13=20 Tuesday August 17th, 2004 8:25:16 PM
Savin will have some trouble seeing Peerimus but the screech helps zero him in. "I am going to go ahead and see what he has found." he will call to the group.
Savin will dart ahead running easily the 1/2 mile to the camp. He will pat Peerimus in bear form and say, "I will go lead them in. Nice choice!"
Savin will dart back towards the group following his own tracks and help guide the group in.
Ilsidur Tuesday August 17th, 2004 11:54:51 PM
The dwarf plods through the drifts, following Savin on the way to, hopefully, some sort of shelter from the storm.
When he gets to the campsite, Ilsidur sets up his tent, and gets ready to sit out the inclement weather.
Jason of Aisildur Wednesday August 18th, 2004 8:19:52 AM
Jason, looking skyward, sees the druid, and smiles.
"Domi be praised." he utters. The paladin then picks up his gear, anything else that he can carry comfortably, and still make normal speed, and heads out with the rest of the group.
Justin Webber (DM) Shelter Wednesday August 18th, 2004 4:15:11 PM
(OOC:Sorry for the early post for those who haven't posted but we are expecting a storm here which may or may not hit. We are hoping for not but we'll see.)
The group travels through the snow, rushed alittle bit now that Peerimus delivers his warning that shelter is up ahead.
After a long walk since the snow, now rain and freezing rain has started. The ground gets hard to walk on alittle over half way to the shelter. (Reflex DC:16 or slip and slide will be around 6 of these to the shelter. 3 for Savin)
The group finds the nice place where Peerimus has been hard at work clearing a nice hole into the snow. He has made a nice one already, with just abit more work and the drift will be ready for use.
The group is most deffinetly cold now and some have some ice now hanging from them since the rain has frozen to clothing, hair etc. (Fort DC:16 or any exposed skin has taken 8 points of subdual damage. No matter what each person will fill slightly numb and very cold inless protected by a spell, etc which each of these and you warmers will be starting to where down inless renewed recently.)
Niobe [Boots of Elvenkind & of the Winterlands, Ring of Sustenance & Endure Elements] Wednesday August 18th, 2004 7:52:00 PM
Niobe heads along to the shelter that Peerimus has found with the others. She has wisely bundled herself as tightly as she can in her winter clothing as she moves along.
((DMG 3.5 pg 250: Boots of the Winterlands: "First, he is able to travel across snow at his normal speed, leaving no tracks. The boots also enable him to travel at normal speed across the most slippery ice (horizontal surfaces only, not vertical or sharply slanted ones) without falling or slipping. Finally, boots of the winterlands warm the wearer, as if he were affected by an endure elements spell." I will make any possible checks I might have to next post; if necessary. All of Niobe's protective items (boots, ring) have continuous enchantments.)) :)
Sly and Luke d20+5=18 d20+5=16 d20+5=17 d20+5=14 d20+5=25 d20+5=12 d20+6=17 Wednesday August 18th, 2004 8:01:12 PM
Sly cronching throw the snow (reflx-18), the going is getting toughter (reflx-16),Sly almost falls at this spot. But he made It alright. He pushes on cluching his cape, again he almost fall (reflex -17), but manages to stay on his feet.
Sly look around to see if anybody need his help, but he knows that they must push on. He starts to go but slips on a slick spot and falls (Reflex -140,"Gee! I fell and I didn't have a drink even!". He can almost see the camp sight now, so if hes going to fall down might as well have fun falling. So Sly get's a runing start and slides (reflx -25) abot a hundred and twenty feet. "Weee! this is fun," then tries it again, but this time he loses his balance and falls on his bottom (reflx - 12).
At lease he is at the camp now, He is cold and hungry But get's to his feet (Fort 17) asking Peerimus, "Need any help? the rest of the party is right behind me. They are all cold and wet." Sly turns to Shiraz, "Friend You are just too fast for me. I just could not keep up with you."
Shiraz d20+8=13 Wednesday August 18th, 2004 8:33:38 PM
Shiraz begins to succumb to the ravages <DC 13 >of the cold and shivers slightly even underneath his cold weather gear and armor. AS the minotaur approaches Peerimus he shrugs of his pack to help move snow out of the way.
Jason of Aisildur d20+6=15 d20+6=23 d20+6=15 d20+6=24 d20+6=23 d20+6=10 d20+9=29 Wednesday August 18th, 2004 9:53:07 PM
Jason finds the walk to the shelter tough going. The armored paladin slips no less than three times on his way (Reflex=15,15,10).
Once there he wipes the frosting from his chin, beginning to feel the cold, but until now luckily feeling little of its ill effects (Fortitude=29).
Savin Wednesday August 18th, 2004 10:13:00 PM
Savin will notice Jason having the most trouble and will go to him and take his pack. "Here let me help you. You might be able to keep your balance a little better now."
OOC See Niobe's post for boots of winterland :-)
Ilsidur (Cloak of Comfort) d20+4=13 d20+4=11 d20+4=17 d20+4=12 d20+4=22 d20+4=15 Wednesday August 18th, 2004 11:56:45 PM
Ilsidur slips and slides on the icy surface, sometimes managing to catch himself, and sometimes falling down. Luckily, the dwarf has a very short distance to fall.
When he arrives at the drift, he quickly drops his pack and uses one of his snowshoes to dig into the drift. Once the digging is done, Ilsidur will offer his healing and cold protection spells to anyone that needs help. Then he gets ready to bed down for the night.
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+12=25 d20+12=16 d20+12=21 d20+12=15 d20+12=13 d20+12=13 d20+10=17 Thursday August 19th, 2004 10:31:42 AM
Yorrick moves along with a slight whine every now and then. Thick ice now clings to his fur and claws and as he travels it becomes more and more difficult. Repeatedly, as the group nears the under construction campsite, he falls unceremoniously with a whine of protest and resignation.
Peerimus remains as a bear to accomplish the bulk digging. Trying to create a deep low roofed and wide shelter. Given the groups size he will go for several holes intending to connect them with smaller crawl ways.
With the main group now arriving, Peerimus dons his human viasge again to be able to communicate the shelter plan to the others. After the shelter is dug Peerimus will shape the entrances with some grooves to shed water away as well as creating a small lip around the outside. The Canvass is used to piton up a door of sorts.
Peerimus quickly moves to get Yorrick and gets him inside. "We need to build a fire at the entrance. This freezing rain will harden the shelter and the grooves I put in will direct any melt away from us. We need to get dry."
Jason of Aisildur Thursday August 19th, 2004 12:50:43 PM
Thank you friend, you are kind." Jason says to Savin as he helps him with his load.
The paladin says a quiet prayer, giving thanks to Domi for their safe passage to their camp site, without much hardship.
Justin Webber (DM) Camping Thursday August 19th, 2004 9:54:48 PM
The igloo like cave is quickly made and ready for everyone and each person gets inside to get warmed up. (Books of the north stop the slip and slide)
(I'm taking for granted some one has the skill and will be making a fire.)
Soon a fire is going and the place starts to warmup more so that the ice hanging on each person begins to melt off and each person begins to feel the numbness and cold go from their body. (The numbness is felt only on those not wearing any magical things to block it but no matter each of you felt alittle on the cold side.)
The night out side passes slowly and the storm rages on, showing no sign of stopping any time soon. It is clear that there will be very little movement from your camp or the orc camp for sometime and you can even see outside of the tent great puddles form just to quickly ice over.
(OOC:The sun has finally set most of the way and it is very dark outside the cave except when the lightning flashes in the sky.)
Savin d20+9=29 d20+9=29 Thursday August 19th, 2004 10:08:56 PM
Savin will gather what food supplies he has to work with and try and prepare a decent meal for the group to enjoy. He places some carefully horded spices and dices up some vegatables, potatoes and meat and makes a delicious soup to help feed the group. (rolled natural 20 on my cooking skill for a 29)
He serves the soup with some hard biscuits that the group can dunk into the thick soup. It will go a long way to warming their insides as well.
He will then pull out his panpipes and entertain the group with some incredible music. Soft but cheerful music will fill the igloo helping to raise everyones spirits. (can't believe I rolled another natural 20)
Ilsidur Thursday August 19th, 2004 10:53:47 PM
Ilsidur is thankful for their warm shelter from the raging storm outside. The evening passes quickly, with the hot soup and the good music to speed it along. He contemplates the morning, thinking about the orcs just a few miles away. "So, tomorrow, Peerimus, you should scout the orc encampment as that bird again for us, and let us know what to expect. I will try to ask the Woldian powers for spells that can boost our fighters, since the orcs seem to be melee attackers."
Sly and Luke Friday August 20th, 2004 7:52:17 AM
Sly will towne down his fire ball spell to where there's just one fire ball floating over his shield, just high enough to cook and keep warm (the fire ball will last as many hours as the level of this wizard).
Sly dries off his Luke, "Ah! There you go, all done, nice and dry. Here's your bone and a little bit of honey comb for your friend Yurrick." Sly will dry himself off and sits around the fire and for once he eats very little, but he enjoys the meal and music.
Niobe Friday August 20th, 2004 8:12:16 AM
Niobe bundles up in her wool blanket while she eats. She will do her best to help clean up after the meal (do the dishes if possible, throw any burnable waste into the fire, etc,), she also makes sure to say thank you for the meal. Niobe will retire for the evening as early as possible with a message to wake her for whatever watch is necessary. She will most likely lay awake for awhile first and listen to the wonderful music that Savin is playing.
Shiraz Friday August 20th, 2004 11:03:35 AM
Shiraz helps with the rest of the shelter and sits as close to the fire as he can without hogging the heat. Eating quickly Shiraz wastes little time or energy before bundling himself up in both of his blanklets trying to stay warm.
Jason of Aisildur Friday August 20th, 2004 2:19:29 PM
Jason takes a helping of the soup and thanks Savin for it. The paladin then takes it to his spot on the floor of the igloo and says a blessing over the meal.
devouring it quickly after, Jason decides to ly back and enjoy the music. It has been a while since he has been alone, with only those he trusts. It is funny to him, that he has only met this group but a day or two ago, yet he feels as though he has known them a lifetime. He gazes down at the tattoo on his hand, and smiles.
"Children and siblings of Chaos, no doubt." he says to himself.
Jason awaits any talk of plans for the morning. If there are some, he will share his thoughts. If there are none, he will turn in for the night, until his turn to watch comes about.
Justin Webber (DM) Nightly relaxing Saturday August 21st, 2004 7:52:48 PM
(OOC:I will move the game on to real morning on my next DM post but for now I will slow down just a tiny so you all can talk over tactics if you have any to speak over.)
The group relaxes in the cave the was made and listens to Savin's music after having a nice hot meal.
Outside the storm still rages on with no sign of quitting yet let alone any sign of lightening up.
The question of tactics is brought up though as the night wears on.
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+20=39 Sunday August 22nd, 2004 10:16:07 AM
Peerimus thanks Savin "Once again for your skills with food"
He will catch on everyone to make sure they are warm with no ill effects from the recent march. [Survival 39]
Satisfied, he works to getting everything he can dried as possible when the pipes start and discussions begin. "I found the orc camp before I circled back to lead to this sheltered spot. They sit only about 1/2 a mile away in an area of the Ice Spikes. Easy to defend, breaks up the wind. I will keep an eye on Mother Wold tonight to see if tomorrow we can expect to move. If so given how close we are, should I still scout them again?"
Sly and Luke Sunday August 22nd, 2004 10:42:58 AM
Sly smiles and thanks Savin for the hot meal, "Savin you out did yourself, it is the best you ever done, I really don't know how you do it." After the meal Sly takes out his diary, writes the latest adventure in it.
To Peerimus, he tell him, "I don't know if you should scout them again, if it's nice weather They'll might spot you?? and be ready to kick out ribs in. I rather take the white cloaks we just taken of those who fell in battle. and suprise them." To the others sly ask, What do you think? I'd like to hear form every one?? After all we are all in this together??"
Jason of Aisildur Monday August 23rd, 2004 12:29:46 AM
"I feel we should keep a vigilant watch this night, particularly if the storm lets up," Jason begins, "Those orcs that got away have certainly let their kin know we are about. We may be more visible to them than we think." he states. Jason looks to Sly, then adds,
"A closer scouting, for numbers and types would be the best scenario. An idea of how many orcs, and what others they might have with them...shaman, clerics and the lot." he finishes.
Niobe Monday August 23rd, 2004 6:39:09 AM
"Why do you think that the orcs would think twice about seeing a bird fly over their camp?" Niobe asks Sly, "I mean unless they intend to eat him for dinner..."
"Personally I think having Peerimus scout the place out just a bit first is an excellent idea. Then we can sneak in with those white cloaks you mentioned Sly. At least we would have a better idea of the lay out and activity; like Jason pointed out."
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+20=27 Monday August 23rd, 2004 9:52:04 AM
Peerimus nods as he listens the the replies, adding "They would take notice because it is a bird they have never seen before, but I think the scouting would be advantageous anyway. There would be little they could do about me."
Peerimus makes frequent wheather checks [survival 27]
Savin Monday August 23rd, 2004 1:39:07 PM
Savin listens to the conversation and adds, "I don't mind doing some scouting, though I can't fly. I can move quietly and quickly on the ground?
On the ground, I will be able to see tracks and other clues a bird might miss."
Sly and Luke Monday August 23rd, 2004 5:32:05 PM
Sly sit there listening to the others input of plans, then Sly wrinkles his brow. "You know your question is a valid one Niobe, BUT Peerimus answer about a eagle being out of place in this land, is a good one and has me thinking about something that has been bothering me since we entered Ice Vain."
Sly closes his book, then look into the fire "I have wondered about thoses lighting flashes every once in a while, And the rumors about a black dragon in these parts?? Now if Knowledge of Nature serves me right, Black Dragond is Not a cold weather Dragon, he likes a warmer climat?? What would live and love Cold weather and spew lighting??" Sly turns to Peerimus but with out seeing eyes ask the bard,"Dare I as?? A Blue dragon?? what do you know or heard of blue Dragons??"
Then Sly fall silent and pets Luke, Luke lifts his face saying "OH! OH!"
Justin Webber (DM) Planning Monday August 23rd, 2004 9:02:24 PM
The night slowly passes more and the group talks into the night about plans for the morning.
The group sounds like they decide on having Peermus and Savin scout and Sly brings up the suggestion about the black dragon maybe being a blue dragon instead. Maybe Sly is right but maybe he is wrong? could the dragon even be in Ice Vain at the moment?
Finally the night hours burn into most of everyone and before long you all start to drift off into a nice sleep. In the morning though you wake up to still thundering and lightning and the darkness of the storm. It is early morning and the ran has stopped and it's been snowing for awhile so the rain has stopped and temp has dropped enough to make the water snow. You can only guess outside that the new snow is covering up the ice that was formed.
Ilsidur Monday August 23rd, 2004 10:31:06 PM
"Peerimus, I'm sure that there are smaller winter birds that you could become, or is there some sort of size restriction? It sure would be helpful if you could fly ahead and scout while the rest of us make our way towards the camp wearing the white wolf furs."
Then the dwarf cleric moves away from the discussion to make his morning devotions.
Niobe Tuesday August 24th, 2004 4:18:17 AM
Niobe gets what sleep she can. She will take her turn doing watch as well. In the morning she will most likely wake early, and if she notices the weather she will not be particularly happy about it.
Sly and Luke Tuesday August 24th, 2004 6:04:10 AM
Sly has used his magic to make a fire, a pot of Claw(coffee) is on the fire for those who rises up early. Sly stands at the door looking out side, then reenters the encampment. "Good morning! Sleepy heads" Sly greet them with a smile. There in the corner are the white cloaks, Sly had taken them out of the chest, now they are ready to be worm. "I was buzy after all I only need about four hours sleep. Right Luke?"
Luke is fast asleep in Sly's bedroll,"ZZZzzz"
Shiraz Tuesday August 24th, 2004 7:55:14 AM
Shiraz shivers most of the night trying to keep warm. The huge minotaur burrows deeply into his immense blankets. The next morning Shiraz wakes up and stretches a bit. "Much warmer in here than I remember last night," Shiraz says with a slight smile." Shiraz gets dressed as mush as possible under his blankets before clearing them up. Shiraz rolls his bedroll up and packs away his extra heavy blanket. Unwrapping a well worn and carefull protected book Shiraz spends about 10 minutes in quiet reflection and study before continuing to prepare for the day. Shiraz pulls out his steel pan and begins to fill it, nmaking sure there are enough coals for all who need them.
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+20=27 Tuesday August 24th, 2004 11:55:27 AM
Peerimus remains in the shelter during his morning meditations but is up at first light just the same.
"Ilsidur, I'm afraid I can only assume what I am familiar with and I am not with any birds for this climate. I will do my best to blend into the sky"
Before he leaves, he whispers his foreign tongue to Yorrick and giving the bear a hug and a pat, Peerimus moves to the door, shifts to a gray speckled eagle and takes flight. Gaining altitude in tight circles and then moving off towards the camp of the orcs at a height of 200'. Yorrick moves over and sits close to Niobe and gives his big head a couple shakes.
[Spot 27] [Yorrick was given Guard command on Niobe]
Jason of Aisildur Tuesday August 24th, 2004 3:18:00 PM
At the first sign of light through the snow and doorway, Jason is up and in prayer to Domi. When his ceremony is over, he moves to the doorway of the shelter and tests to see that it is still passable.
He then returns to the group, and states,
"I am not in favor of sneaking in under some decietful guise. If we are to use their furs for comfort, that is fine, but I am opposed to pretending to be their kind, just to suprise them with a blade. If the group wishes it, I will accept it, but please know it is offensive to me, and if possible I would prefer a direct assault." he says. Jason knows most of the group will soon be irritated by his constant opposition to various tactics, but he knows that above all else he must maintain his honor, courage, AND honesty.
Niobe (illegal 2nd post!) Tuesday August 24th, 2004 4:59:04 PM
The thief looks at Yorrick with an expression of curiousity clearly on her face.
"What's this bonding time? Or haven't you forgiven me for doubting your tracking skills?"
Niobe backs off as much as she can and moves over to one side if possible putting at least a little breathing room between herself and the (very?) large bear. She wonders what Peerimus talked to Yorrick about.
"Jason I don't think we could pull off looking like orcs; nevermind orc barbarians. I sure as heck can't," Niobe tosses out the remark quite off-handedly, and with only a slight hint of a grin. "I would think those cloaks would make good camouflage. That's what their archers used them for at any rate," she shrugs and keeps a wary eye on Yorrick, "I would prefer not to become a mobile archery target before even getting remotely close to the village. I guess maybe its different if you are encased in full metal armor?" She would have possibly smiled if the bear's sudden "strange" behavior didn't occupy her thoughts so much.
Sly and Luke(illegal 2nd post) Tuesday August 24th, 2004 8:06:36 PM
Sly look back at his Luke, Sly mutters "Lazy dog, he like that sleeping bag of comfort!" but to Janson he Tells him "We are not trying to deceive them, my Paladin friend. But we are not from around these parts, So if the enermy uses the white capes, WE use white capes. do you understant... It's a matter of staying alive."
Sly goes to the claw pot and pours anothers cup og nice hot liquid. Then smiles at Niobe, "My Dear Friend Niobe, Yurrick is only following orders from Peerimus to proteck you, besides Luke is sleeping and the bear like you."
Justin Webber (DM) Tag with the orcs Tuesday August 24th, 2004 9:15:16 PM
The group finally make decisions or sort of and Peerimus takes off in bird form to scout out the camp and after a short flight in the falling heavy snow and the winds have calmed down thankfully. Peerimus can see ice patches here and there in the snow and soon sees the large camp of orcs. The orc believe it or not are out and moving about and Peerimus even sees between each gap of the four main gaps leading into the camp is guarded by around 6 orcs a piece. The camp other wise is pretty calm and nothing else moves except a couple at a small fire out in the center of the group of around fifteen or twenty tents. One in the center is alot larger then the ones around it.
The rest of the group moves out? discusses the use of the cloaks? Movement posts please.
Savin Tuesday August 24th, 2004 10:25:54 PM
Savin rises in the morning and stretches and does his exercises. He will then head out into the snow and do some kata and meditate for a while. Once his focus is centered, he will join the group and say, "I think we need to discuss some battle plans. We never really have done this kind of combat before. How are we going to tackle this village. These orcs seem a lot tougher than most. I think we need to stay outside the village and soften it up with magic and make them come to us. Pick the ground we want to fight on."
Savin will look to the spellusers and ask, "What kind of mass spells do we have at our disposal?"
Ilsidur Tuesday August 24th, 2004 11:07:45 PM
Ilsidur says, "Wait a minute. Is this the orc village, or the orc raiders' camp? I am quite happy to thump some orc warriors' heads, but I am not happy at all to be slaughtering orc women and children. When Peerimus gets back, we can ask him if he saw any signs of women or youngsters." Then the dwarf packs up his gear and throws a white wolf fur over his shoulders. "Jason, these furs, if they work at all, will only let us get close enough to the camp that we can rush them and attack, without having to run the gamut of arrows from the orc archers. I am sure once we reach the camp, the combat will be face-to-face, and you will have plenty of opportunity for honourable combat."
Jason of Aisildur Tuesday August 24th, 2004 11:43:32 PM
"I agree Ilsidur." Jason begins, "I cannot allow the slaughtering of innocent women and children, even if they are of orcish blood!" He adds. The paladin turns to the rest in the group, and in particular to their flying scout.
"Was there anything in what you saw that could tell us if the camp had any women or children in it?" he asks.
Once answered, the paladin makes the following combat suggestions,
"As for combat, I suggest a two pronged attack. The wave of majiks first is a good idea. I think that each of the two groups should have a caster in them, and that the two groups should come in toward the camp at different angles." he looks around at the others,
"I can speak orcish fluidly, if someone else does, than I suggest that we be in seperate groups from each other, so we can relay any overheard combat tactics to our companions." Jason waits to hear what other thoughts come up.
Shiraz Wednesday August 25th, 2004 6:48:33 AM
Shiraz looks at his companions, "we should not split ourselves up," Shiraz states firmly. "If we do we are asking for trouble. We should attack from a distance first, arrows and magic, but I dont see any reason for us to be on opposite sides of the camp."
Sly and Luke Wednesday August 25th, 2004 7:42:46 AM
Sly swip his nice hot brew, "Friend Jason, we are not going after women and children, we are going after the raiders! we better wait and see what Peerimus has seen for us, before we leave. We'll know more then." Then Sly starts to think, "Now let's see I have my Flaming Sphere, Magic Missels,Acid Splash also Scorching Ray. I think that's all the attack spell I have for now?? I also have three Scrolls, The first one is Blindness/Deaftness, the second one is Chill Touch and the last one is Shocking Grasp. That about it for me, I hope it's good enough what do you think?? Friend Savin?"
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+20=21 Wednesday August 25th, 2004 9:41:35 AM
Yorrick slides closer to Niobe as she shifts away a bit. The bear moves in and bumps her hand with his head for a petting or scratching.
Peerimus makes several passes over the camp to make sure he has not missed anything. In particular the trail a war party might make, in case the orcs though of sending a group out to try and out flank them. [Spot 21 natural 1 failed]
With snow apperently blowing into his eyes, he turns and heads back swiftly. He lands, shifts and informs the group "The orcs are out and moving about and between each gap in the Ice Spikes of the four main gaps leading into the camp is guarded by around 6 orcs a piece. The camp other wise is pretty calm and nothing else moves except a couple at a small fire out in the center of the group of around fifteen or twenty tents. One in the center is alot larger then the ones around it."
"I do not know if this is the entire village or a very large raiding party. Orcs all look the same to me, especially from above. Definately no children about. The larger tent may be a slave tent or the leaders."
Jason of Aislidur Wednesday August 25th, 2004 1:39:37 PM
Jason nods to Shiraz in appreciation of his suggestion. He then adds in some more thoughts, and perhaps explanation.
"My suggestion of splitting the party was to enable us to take out two prongs of their four guard prongs that guard between the spikes. If we all go as a single group, we might do well against the first group, yes, but then we would have 3 groups of 6 coming at us all at once, let alone what other warriors might be in the main part of the encampment. If we split and attack from a distance, then in close, we perhaps take out most of two whole groups, then only have the two groups to deal with." Spreading ourselves also makes us less suceptable to archer fire, or at least spreads us out from it...but I will leave it for the group to decide." he finishes.
Niobe Wednesday August 25th, 2004 3:08:35 PM
Niobe scratches Yorrick round the head and behind the ears reaching deep beneath his thick fur with her fingers. She listens to the discussion about splitting the team and cocks her head to one side.
"Jason I don't think we have enough people to split the group at any rate. There is only seven of us, and Yorrick and Luke; one group would only be three people. Never mind that we need to know just how many 'enemies' there are in the first place."
Niobe shifts and starts to scratch Yorrick about the neck, "I don't much fancy; say, five to one odds. If we have the time I would say that our best bet is to lure a patrol or two out and ambush them. That way we won't have to deal with any women and children - and we would have the bonus of far fewer enemies to deal with each time." With an impish grin she concludes, "not to cramp your style or anything Jason but I still vote for stealth. Are you used to working with militia? With your tactics I would guess yes." The thief's last comments are just idle talk and it shows in her relaxed pose and body language.
Savin Wednesday August 25th, 2004 3:35:58 PM
Savin looks puzzled at some of the talk and asks, "Aren't orcish females and children evil as well? Wouldn't they stick a knife in our backs as quickly as they could? I am not overly concerned about their welfare. I am not going out of my way to hunt them down and hurt them but if some get caught in the crossfire, so be it.
We are outnumbered and must use our advantages to the best of our abilities. These are the same creatures who burned the villages tents. Without shelter in this enviroment, you simply die.
Look at it this way. If we go in and kill all the male orcs over 16 years of age. The warriors. Won't the rest just starve to death for lack of food. I am assuming we are killing the hunters of the tribe. It is a dilema."
A View From The Sky (DM/Al) Wednesday August 25th, 2004 9:22:10 PM
The group remains within the night's camp, awaiting the return of their druid companion. The discussion of both ethics as well as tactics whips about the small camp of adventurers like the wind in a gale.
Fortunately for Peerimus, the winds across the plains of Ice Vein are still today. The heavy snow fall does obscure the eagle-form druid's vision. But it can effect his natural acuity only so much. Still, Peerimus sees no sign of any raiding parties.
Of the orcs who travel occasionally between the tents, some the gray eagle identifies as female. These, however, he notes, are garbed as warriors. The tents too, seem unlike the more permanent tented structures at the barbarian village of Smashed Teeth. This may be a difference in crafting skills. And it may not.
One more thing Peerimus sees before winging back to camp through the curtain of large falling snowflakes: A Captive. From above, the druid can see that the figure is tall, most likely well over six feet. Yet he, for by the beard it is clear that the captive is male, gives the impression of being thin and lanky as he is shoved along the path between tents. Neither is the captive particularly dressed for the weather, sporting only a hooded cloak for protection against the cold of Ice Vein. One last detail is trapped by the druid's eagle eyes before the captive is pushed into the dark interior of the large tent: The captive is gagged.
<Movement? Actions?>
Though large flakes of snow drift softly to the icy ground upon which the party stands. Dark and trackless dimensions away, lightening splits the sky over a house that looks remarkably similar to DM Justin's. The sky opens and hailstones the size of Persian cats rain down making feline sized dents in the hoods of cars. The dark spectre of a vacationing Co-DM looms above. Suddenly, Ice Vein doesn't seem so bad after all. ^_^
Ilsidur Wednesday August 25th, 2004 10:50:09 PM
Ilsidur listens to what Peerimus has to say from his scouting trip, and replies, "This sounds like an orc attack camp, not a village with families. Jason, I have to agree with Niobe. We fight best when we can support each other, and to do that we need to be together. If we manage to get close enough to one of the four gates to attack, we might be able to wipe out those guards before reinforcements arrive. Now, let's get going, before the orcs strike camp and head out. Also, we need to see to that captive, before the orcs can finish him off. We can discuss tactics a little more on the way. For instance, I have a spell that will let someone fly; I have a spell that will let me teleport myself and up to three others about 500', and I have another spell that will let me teleport myself and up to three others for a number of miles."
The dwarf throws on his gear, then wraps the white wolf fur around his body, and heads out of the cave in the direction of the orc encampment.
Sly and Luke Thursday August 26th, 2004 6:26:28 AM
Sly tries to stop Ilsidur,"WAIT! This sounds like a slave camp! the male slave sound like a magic user?? there might just be other slaves there?? Come On people let's go!" Sly check his sword, put on a white cape. Then heads for the opening, but to the Paladin. Sly tells him "The warriers there are Females and Slave Keepers! Stay here if your squeemish about the evils of slavery." The the half Elf head out...
Luke hearing the tone in Sly voice, Knows that some one is in trouble. Luke get's out of the sleeping bag and runs after Sly, Yelling "WAIT!"
Jason of Aisildur Thursday August 26th, 2004 6:55:01 AM
Jason is taken back by Sly's harsh demeanor.
"I assumed we all have permission to speak our mind openly, and I was just doing so. Not all of us have the same attitude toward warring. If I can tolerate our rogues actions, than perhaps my sensitivity towards women and children, even orcish ones, can be tolerated as well." he is about to get angry, but then thinks better of it, and adds,
"I am far from squeemish. If they are warriors, than I hope they die proudly on the battlefield." he states, then prepares and follows the rest out.
"Perhaps we could have Shiraz fly in courtesy of the spell mentioned, and then grab the bearded slave, and return with him for answers." Jason adds as he walks.
Shiraz Thursday August 26th, 2004 7:41:00 AM
Shiraz places the steel "hotbox" in its place on his back and finishes gearing up. "We stay together," Shiraz states looking at the group we can not afford to be separated." Shiraz pulls the last of his gear on and exits the tent. "Which way?" Shiraz asks looking around. Once he spots Sly and Luke Shiraz will head in that direction.
Peerimus and Yorrick [Extended Endure Elements, Greater Magic Fang] Thursday August 26th, 2004 10:26:14 AM
Peerimus gives a rough hug to Yorrick and whispers again and with another look at Niobe the bear grunts and stays on Peerimus' heel heading outside.
Outside, Peerimus Shifts into a great kodiak bear and says a small prayer, in bear "Mother Wold grant us security and comfort here in your house and Father Wold bestow upon us a portion of your might." [Cast and share Extended Endure Elements and Greater Magic Fang all weapons +1]
The two bears strike out after Ilsidur, quickly catching up.
Niobe Thursday August 26th, 2004 12:11:32 PM
Niobe is no less quick to get a move on than anyone else. The thief grabs her gear and one of the white cloaks. Niobe dons her gear and the cloak quickly.
She laughs at Jason for his comment about her and her actions. Niobe seems generally amused at Jason's comment. "Paladin, your chivalry towards the lesser races is commendable, but outdated. Your reaction to my ilk was absolutely expected - if more than a bit delayed."
Niobe will detain Jason for just a few seconds before leaving. "Sly has been looking for his family for a long time. They were abducted when he was younger. He took the news of their enslavement badly. Ergo he has little love for any slavers, which is probably why he was dissing your point of view." With a smirk she concludes, "luckily for you I seem to have thicker skin so your comment towards me merely amuses me."
She follows Sly and Ilsidur closely. Niobe hopes that Sly's family is either present at the camp; or at least that someone might know of them and their where-abouts.
Sly and Luke Thursday August 26th, 2004 5:57:48 PM
Sly notices that Niobe is behind him, he motions her to catch up to him and tell her. "I'm going to try to keep the females warriers buzy, if you get a chance try to rip a slit in the big tent and see if there's more slaves inside, and take away with you as much food, charcoal for our party. Thank you and I don't know what I'd do with out you."
They both march on with Luke and Yurrick behind them.
Jason of Aisildur Thursday August 26th, 2004 6:45:19 PM
Jason listens to Niobe, and smiles genuinely.
"I meant no ill intent by my words Niobe. It is no secret that I do not approve of the ways of the rogue, but you and I are bound together, as are the rest of us in this group, by something far greater. You need not think I am mocking you or tempting you into anger...I'm not. My words were meant only as a comparison to make with regard to my code and its restrictions and that it be accepted by the group, just as your 'ways' have been." he finishes the short speech, then moves on, with the others.
The paladin packs all the embers his box will safely take, then he gathers a fur and dawns his fur lined armor, before heading out...
Niobe Thursday August 26th, 2004 7:47:45 PM
Niobe will chuckle at part of Jason's reply. "What makes you think that they have accepted my 'ways'? Me they have accepted, but my methods are probably considered a necessary evil by a few I would think." She claps Jason companionably on he shoulder, "I don't think you have anything to worry about. Everyone will let you have your say and then we'll all get down to business and do whatever it is we do best in each our own ways." Niobe grins, "incedentally I always expected you to be at least somewhat critical of what I do. That's part of your job isn't it?" Her tone is friendly and with no animosity.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Niobe will catch up with Sly quite quickly, she listen to his suggestions. "No problem. I will happily sneak in, round up all the people I can and see to it that they have some means of keeping warm. Then I will most happily steal the orcs blind for provisions; especially any coal and rations." It is difficult to tell if she is being completely serious or if she is joking a bit. "Sly you don't need to thank me you know. I promised you that I would help and I have always intended to keep that promise." She flashes Sly a brilliant; if slightly mischievous, smile.
Justin Webber (DM) Camp Ahoy Captain! Thursday August 26th, 2004 9:08:09 PM
The group travels through the snow and icy patches slowly. The large snow flakes not making the traveling to difficult atleast but cutting down on sight just abit as the snow fall has picked up.
It is still cold enough that the snow falls and not rain and after a small walk since the group is all hyped up for some action you all reach the ouskirts of the large encampment.
You see that the ice spikes here are all over the place and can only hazard guesses why but not really know. You see many ways to go and Peerimus can lead the way through the ice spikes to the orc guards who guard each entrance into the camp or he can lead you far enough to get a better view all together and you can make better plans.
(OOC:I do not want to rush you right in to fast so you have time to work out decent plans and get a better idea of what your up against. Remember that Peerimus's flight on checking on the camp was earlier and it has been alittle while now and some to all the camp may be awake and active now for sure.) ********* Al: Thank you bud for posting for me and Ice Vein don't sound to bad to me since I designed it ;) You just have to know how to live there. Thanks for the joke also, it made me smile after the heck of yesterday.
Jason of Aisildur Thursday August 26th, 2004 9:42:19 PM
Jason looks around at the large ice spikes. Truely he is in a foreign land, and it is at this moment, perhaps more than all others, that he true realizes it.
"Peerimus, perhaps another 'flight' as a scout would help us better discover the full scope of the camp, in terms of approximate numbers of warriors. I would not want fair Niobe, as stealthy and quiet as she is, to be caught in the middle of a five hundred orc camp. Also, besides the guard posts, other strategic locations they may be guarding or found in could also be deduced from another look." Jason says. He then pauses, waiting for the others to speak.
Savin Thursday August 26th, 2004 9:44:36 PM
Savin will follow his normal procedure of circling the main body in a random way, looking for traps and other pitfalls. On one of his passes by the main group he will say, "I doubt the orcs will have their best on guard duty. I am sure the stronger will bully the weaker into standing out in the cold. If we could do a sleep spell or something like it low level, we might be able to take out a group quietly and sneak in."
