Magpie Mysteries

DM Bob & Carla
Sunday August 22nd, 2004 7:34:12 PM

Folks wrap up their business. Items are exchanged, loot tallied up, new items purchased. Skills acquired during the last adventures are exercised. A few lessons are taken. New knowledge is digested and committed to memory. Bags and packs are packed, and then repacked until the owners are satisfied. After a night that is restful for most, the Swords of Light meet at the Adventurer's Board .

The consensus is that most have business in Magpie Crossing. Andrath has an errand to run for Feorges. After a chance meeting with the bard Wynn Brightsong, Bralin had agreed to pay his respects to the half-elf's mother who lives in that place. As Ward would have it, there should be enough time to attend the open house for the Woldian League of Adventurers as well. Cadmar is interested in locating the family of the Flett brothers, while Elerinn still has the notice from Samuel and Sons, asking for the group to call at their establishment on Water St. Freed up by the Coven, Alkali is anxious for another adventure.

As the group prepare to head out, two figures are seen hurrying towards the group. On closer inspection Kedarn recognizes one is his friend and teacher, Therodan, while Lorth recognizes the man's companion as the hermit who provided him with a place to stay.

"I regret to pull you away from your party, son," says Therodan in a rich baritone, "but the oracles have spoken." The old teacher looks at the rest of the party, a little sadly, before continuing, "Of course, it is up to you to choose to heed Gargul's call." Therodan lowers his voice to almost a whisper, "One is needed to go to a far land and minister to a strange race that knows not of the Grey-eyed One. You have been chosen to lead the mission." Therodan leads Kedarn away from the party and continues to speak with him, as the grey-eyed hermit in the grey cloak lays a cool hand on Lorth's shoulder.

"You must continue to do Gargul's work in the Valley, paladin. It is your duty! Take up your weapons in his name, and strive against unnatural suffering and death in the Wold. Track down spirits that roam the Wold without proper reasons and send them to the Shadow Land! Eliminate the undead from the Wold!" The hermit looks at the party, then at Lorth. Raising a hand to the party, he intones an ominous blessing, "Death is a part of the natural order. Embrace Death as the door to rebirth." With that, the party: Alkali, Andrath, Bralin, Cadmar, Elerinn, and Lorth head out of town for the long day's trek to Magpie Crossing.

(OOC: Dominic/Kedarn is leaving Cinnamon Valley for personal reasons. Dominic will still be at play in the Wold, however.)

I have the official word from the powers that be in the Catacombs. They will give us gold totalling 90% of the value of any magic that we sell in the Catacombs. So, like I said earlier, unless anyone specifically wants one of the items, why don't we sell them and spread the money around, so that we can purchase what we want?

Kedarn
Monday August 23rd, 2004 4:08:49 AM

Kedarn seeing his mentor coming towards the group pauses to see what Therodan has to say. After Therodan tells him of what the Oracles has said Kedarn walks back to the group. Looking to each of them Kedarn says "May Gargul watch over each of you and protect you my friends."

Kedarn takes his backpack off then reaches in and pulls out a scroll and 3 potions. Kedarn then takes the wand out and hands it with the other items to Cadmar. As Kedarn hands the items over he says "You will be needing these."

Kedarn walks over to Lorth then lays his right hand on Lorth's shoulder while saying "Gargul watches over you, be his guiding hand for the others."

Kedarn then says to everyone "Farewell my friends." Kedarn then turns and walks over to his mentor and friend Therodan and says "Let us be off."

Cadmar
Monday August 23rd, 2004 4:17:57 AM

Cadmar says goodbye to the party's leader and looks at the remaining adventurers.

"Good luck on your mission, Kedarn. If you ever need our help..."

There is just six of us left. And only four out of the original eight who started out this company.

Cadmar watches the trio depart. Then he sighs and turns to the rest of the party: "Well, let's head out while the sun is still low in the sky, shall we?"

[Check your mail folks.]

Lorth
Monday August 23rd, 2004 8:45:19 AM

(OOC: Back from vacation)

Lorth is taken aback by Kedarn's departure, but takes it in stride. He then promises the hermit that he will do his best to continue Gargul's work.

Turning to the rest of the party he says, "If you are just going to sell the items we found, I would humbly ask that I be able to use, the +1 longsword and +1 Chainshirt in that order of preference. I have no desire to buy equipment from the catacombs, relying more on Gargul to provide me items, found in our travels."

Bralin
Monday August 23rd, 2004 9:04:23 AM

The dwarf simply nods a farewell to Kedarn. He has not known the cleric nearly long enough for anything else.

However, Kedarn's departure does raise some concerns for the company.

Who shall be battle leader? And who shall provide battle healing?

Thus, it is a pensive dwarf who follows his comrades toward Magpie Crossing.

[OOC - I will be gone Aug 30 - Sep 2. Can anyone take over Bralin while I'm gone?]

Alkali
Monday August 23rd, 2004 2:35:05 PM

Alkali watches into the distance as Kedarn walks away on his own quest. He yells before Kedarn disappears from sight "Good luck!" He waits for the party to reorganize and set off.

Elerinn
Monday August 23rd, 2004 6:20:43 PM

Elerinn bids Kedarn farwell and realizes that the Swords of Light, while still young, has seen many members come and go. He wonders if the group is destined to change every once in a while. When the paladin has left, the gnome looks at the others and says, in a hopefull voice: "Allright, let's head to Magpie Crossing and go wherever Wardd leads us!"

Andrath  d20+12=14 d20+17=34
Monday August 23rd, 2004 10:44:40 PM

Andrath goes over and shakes Kedarn's hand, accepting the items that the cleric turns over to the party. "I am sorry to see you go; we will miss your leadership and your steady hand. If you ever want to find us again, just leave a note for us on the Adventurers' Board, and we will make sure we find you."

Then he turns to join the party on the road to Magpie Crossing. Since they are travelling on a road, the elf doesn't bother to lead the way, but he does keep his ears and eyes open for trouble. [OOC: Listen check 14, Spot check 34]

DM Bob & Carla
Monday August 23rd, 2004 11:14:21 PM

The party members say their farewells to Kedarn and set out for Magpie Crossing. It is a bright, sunny morning with scarcely a cloud in the sky. The day grows warmer as the sun rises, but all but Bralin know that a days steady march is required if they are to reach Magpie Crossing by nightfall.

Andrath notices a small cloud of dust rising up from behind them, and a bit later can make out the shape of two horses pulling something.

When the cart finally reaches them, a halfling with dark curly hair and wrinkled, sun worn skin stops the cart and addresses them.

"Don't normally stop for strangers, mind...but you folk look alright. I'm headed for Magpie Crossing. There's room in the back if you like, and a spot for someone small up here with me." The halfling motions towards the rear of the cart that is partly filled with hay and sacks of grain, and pats the small wooden bench that sits above the front of the cart. "Don't worry, the lads have pulled heavier loads than you lot" he adds and leans forward to give the large workhorses a reassuring pat with his hand.

Cadmar
Tuesday August 24th, 2004 12:28:44 AM

"You could take us there? That would be splendid!"

Cadmar boards the cart. "I'm Cadmar, from the Gondaval clan. Thank you for your kindness. Are you from around here?"

Lorth
Tuesday August 24th, 2004 7:43:30 AM

Lorth thanks the halfling for his generosity, and then quickly introduces himself. He then climbs into the back of the cart.

Bralin
Tuesday August 24th, 2004 9:14:00 AM

Bralin eyes the conveyance mistrustfully. He's had bad luck with hitched rides. However, it appears sound and his companions are already boarding.

The dwarf resolutely climbs into the cart.

Alkali
Tuesday August 24th, 2004 5:10:18 PM

Alkali looks up catiously at the driver. Untrusting at first Alkali refuses to board the cart muttering to himself "Driven by a halfing? That's like commiting suicide or something or..."

After others climb the cart Alkali sighs and gives in. He commands Karee to fly above and watch for anything suspicous. "Remember Karee, these guys can be dangerous. Be careful." Alkali pulls up his black hood trying to hide himself in the back.

Elerinn
Tuesday August 24th, 2004 6:34:45 PM

Unlike some of his companions, Elerinn doesn't expect anything suspicious about the halfling riding the cart.
The small gnome hops onto the bench next to the halfling, bows his head slightly and says: "Hello, sir. Thank you for sharing your cart. I am Elerinn and we are the Swords of Light. May I ask you why you are travelling to the Crossing?"

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday August 24th, 2004 11:13:56 PM

Elerinn takes a seat next to the halfling driver, while the rest of the party clambers over the back of the wagon. With a flick of the reins the cart lurches forward and Andrath has to run to catch up. With a lulling creak of wheels the cart makes good progress.

Twining the reins through the toes of his bare feet, the halfling fusses with his pockets until he locates a pipe. Tamping in a bit of weed, and lighting it, he then clamps it between his teeth. "You ever been to Magpie Crossing ?" he asks, adding with a chuckle, "Don't suppose you have. Well wait till you see it! Pretty little town on a lake it is. Just south of Strongwind Castle." He pulls on the pipe, and then exhales a small plume of smoke, "just running up with some supplies for one of the inns. The Shadfly Inn . Ever hear of it? Owned by one of my cousins on my mother's side."

Andrath  d20+8=11 d20+17=32 d20+12=15
Tuesday August 24th, 2004 11:15:35 PM

Andrath climbs into the wagon with the rest, and introduces himself. "I am Andrath, from around these parts. Thank you for the ride. Do you often pick up strangers like this?" He listens to the wagonmaster's talk, trying to figure out if they are on the up-and-up. [OOC: Sense motive check of 11.]

The elf will also scan the wagon and the halfling, to see if anything seems out of place. [OOC: Spot 32, Search 15]

Cadmar
Wednesday August 25th, 2004 2:03:55 AM

Cadmar looks at the nervous reactions of a few of his companions with some amusement. "Having a little paranoia for breakfast?..."

"I'm from around these parts, too, but I haven't ever been to Magpie Crossing. The place stirs up too many bad memories. Still, you eventually have to face your own daemons, and today seems as good a day as any."

Lorth
Wednesday August 25th, 2004 7:14:21 AM

Lorth sits silent in the back, listening to the light conversation as he watches the countryside pass by.

Bralin
Wednesday August 25th, 2004 8:23:09 AM

Bralin glances at Cadmar, but says nothing. Its not the driver that bothers the dwarf, merely the expectation of getting bounced around the cart like so much foodstuffs.

Then the halfling starts babbling, and the dwarf groans inwardly to himself. It promises to be a long, long journey.

Elerinn
Wednesday August 25th, 2004 11:28:06 AM

Elerinn is excited about going to Magpie Crossing after the halfling has told about it with a lot of enthusiasm.
After a moment of silence, the gnome asks the man next to him if there are any problems in the town, any problems a group like the Swords of Light could solve.

Alkali
Wednesday August 25th, 2004 4:45:06 PM

Alkali remains silent and uncomfortable. He sits staring at the floor of the cart trying to ignore the situation.

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday August 25th, 2004 8:32:33 PM

The cart bumps along at a good pace. "We'll get where we're going just after lunch. Maybe there'll be some of Hildy's chicken pie left over, or maybe a bit of bumble-berry pie, or rumberry. I love rumberry pie." The little man gets a far away look on his face at the though of the pies. Elerinn's question brings him back though. "'an what kind of group is the Swords of Light" he asks, his twinkling eyes giving away the fact that he has a pretty good idea. "Won't be needing any soldiers in Magpie. Lieutenant Orrin's got his patrols out. Nasty bloke that Orrinn. Bloody useless patrols if you ask me! Sneaking about and bothering folks!"

The driver updates Elerinn on some of the local gossip, mostly how a number of businesses have turned over but no business loss has been as bad as the tragedy at Brightsong Trading Company. How, the wayward son had returned and with the company on the verge of bankruptcy he had accompanied a shipload of Mithral bound for New Elleana. News was the ship had been lost at sea, along with any future for the company.

Andrath senses that the halfling is a genuinely affable fellow, if a bit of a gossip. The cart is partly filled with hay and sacks of grain, nothing unusual, although the sharp eyes of the rogue do pick out a worn carpet bag half hidden under the driver's bench.

Not long after the sun has passed its zenith those in the back of the cart hear the halfling exclaim, "here we are!" From the little knoll on which the cart has stopped, Elerinn can see a pretty little village with the sun shining off Magpie Lake just beyond.

Andrath
Wednesday August 25th, 2004 10:58:54 PM

[OOC: Bob/Carla, have a look at Andrath's Advernturer Repose information. In the character background, he spent a number of years in whatever passes for the city (or town) guard of Magpie Crossing, as a watchman and catching thieves. It also lists a couple of characters from Mapie Crossing, if you want to include them. The problem was that he needed to be from a town or city for his background, and Magpie Crossing was the only place that could pass for a population center in Cinnamon Valley. If you want to have him come from outside the valley, so that 1) he doesn't know Magpie Crossing, and 2) Magpie Crossing can be a small village without a town guard, then let me know and I can adjust the background. You can adjust this post to fit.]

Andrath is glad to be back in Magpie Crossing. "You know, I spent a few years here before I joined up with all of you. I know the town fairly well. After all, it has only been a couple of months since I have been away, so it can't have changed that much, can it?" He looks over the town, to see if anything has changed.

He asks their affable driver, "Who is this Orrinn character? I don't remember him from the town guard. Why is he such a problem? I remember the watch being helpful, and pretty good at catching bandits and thieves and such, if I do say so myself!"

He looks over at Cadmar and asks, "What is first on our busy agenda? I need to see to a small errand for Feorges sometime today, but that should only take a few minutes. Why don't you decide our plan of action for the day?"

Cadmar
Thursday August 26th, 2004 2:02:25 AM

"Well, there are only three things. We should visit the Flett family and deliver the letter and money we found to them and we should inquire about the bounty at Samuel & Sons." Cadmar is staring off into the distance, visibly bugged by some thoughts. "The third thing would be going to the Brightsong Trading Company. I wonder if they have any news about Wynn. This shipwreck accident sounds scary."

Cadmar quietly asks Andrath: "Do you know where are the graves of the soldiers who died during the war against Dread?"

Lorth
Thursday August 26th, 2004 7:59:42 AM

Lorth climbs out of the cart when they reach Magpie-crossing. He checks his equipment to make sure everything is in it's proper place and then waits for Bralin, to decide where he is going.

Bralin
Thursday August 26th, 2004 8:26:23 AM

Bralin takes in the tale about the Brightsong Trading Company without comment. He has news, but its not for the halfling.

Cadmar's comment brings a frown, as the dwarf distinctly recalls clarifying Wynn's status not one day gone.

"I go to the Brightsong Company," he announces, getting out of the cart. "Afterward I shall join you at Samuel & Sons."

Inwardly steeling himself, he asks the halfling, "Where is the Brightsong Company?"

After enduring the anticipated long winded response, Bralin moves purposefully toward his task's completion.

Elerinn
Thursday August 26th, 2004 9:12:30 AM

Elerinn hops out of the cart and thanks the helpfull halfling. He doesn't really mind where to go first and says: "I suggest we just go to the Flett family first and rejoin with Bralin at Samuel's. Perhaps we can help Andrath with his errand when we are finished there?"

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday August 26th, 2004 10:46:58 PM

"Town guard you say," muses the halfling watching his passengers disembark before continuing, "all the troubles with the businesses in town meant decreased revenues at collection time. With the garrison just over at Strongwind Castle, the Reeve decided to disband the town guard. Most of 'em set off adventuring, hired out as caravan guards, or settled down to farming. Lieutenant Orrin's over at the Castle, but he spends too much time snooping around town if you ask me, watchin' folks with them shifty eyes of his."

The halfling puffs on his pipe with a curious look on his face, before answering Bralin. "Brightsong Trading Company is the two storey warehouse and loading yard down on the shore of the lake. The offices are down there too. Shame about what happened to Alpynna's boy. Broke his father's heart he did, when he ran off to explore the Valley. Then he came back to help his mother, only to go and get himself drowned. Well, that's where adventurin' will get you. Dead, or worse!" The diminutive driver snuffs out his pipe and sticks it in a pocket. With a click of his tongue, he gets the horses moving, and the cart creaks as it pulls away. "Don't forget to stop by the Shadfly Inn for some pie!" he calls over his shoulder as he and his cart descend towards the town.

The party makes their way the remaining quarter mile to the edge of town discussing where to go first.

Cadmar
Friday August 27th, 2004 3:15:31 AM

Cadmar sighs. "Well, let's go find the family of Lorinor and Gealan then. Sigh. I really hate to be the bearer of bad news. Let's get this over with."

The ranger walks with Elerinn into the town and starts asking around for the kin of the deceased carpenters.

Lorth
Friday August 27th, 2004 8:27:46 AM

Lorth says, "I will accompany Bralin".

Bralin
Friday August 27th, 2004 11:25:01 AM

Unaware of the questioning look the halfling just gave him, Bralin nods to Lorth, and sets off for the Brightsong Trading Company.

Once there, he finds the nearest person that appears as if they work there and announces,
"I am Bralin Stoneminder. I bear glad tidings to the mother of Wynn Brightsong. Where is she?"

Elerinn
Friday August 27th, 2004 6:22:15 PM

Elerinn responds to Cadmar's remark by saying: "Well Cadmar, I don't like to do this either. But someone's got to do it, I guess."

The sorcerer helps his friend in the search for the dead carpenter's family.

Alkali
Friday August 27th, 2004 10:46:54 PM

Happy to part with the unwanted halfling, Alkali calls Karee back and waits on the group. Seeing Bralin leave for a bit, Alkali decides to follow him.

DM Bob & Carla
Friday August 27th, 2004 11:49:47 PM

Familiar with the layout of the town, Andrath leads the party towards the main street of Magpie Crossing. On the right is a two story building painted in two shades of iridescent blue with fancy black trim beneath the eaves. A large sign hangs from the front of the building in the shape of a small wetland with a large blue dragonfly flying out of it. Written first in common, and then in slightly smaller eleven letters beneath is the name Dragon Fly Inn. Two large double doors with etched inserts indicate the entrance.

Next to the inn is a long, low building with a sawmill next to it. An intricately carved sign announces the place as Flett's Fine Furniture. Upon entering Cadmar and Elerinn notice that the front of the building is a showroom with a small customer service counter behind which sits an elderly human male with a female companion. The woman has silvery hair, and wears small, round spectacles, but time has been gentle with her face. She looks up with startling blue eyes, and asks, "how may I help you?"

Andrath points out a small side street between the inn and the furniture shop that leads to the Brightsong Trading Company warehouse. Bralin, Lorth and Alkali pass Josephina's Ironworks and then arrive in the large yard of the trading company. Bralin speaks to the young elven male posting paper notices announcing the closure and sale of the company on the great doors of the warehouse. "You'll find the lady in the offices," he says, pointing towards a door near the western corner of the building. The inside of the offices are dark and cool. There is a long wooden counter completely blocking one end of the room, with a small hinged gate at one side. In the room between the counter and the door is a large wooden table. A few bolts of fabric sit on the table. A slender dark-haired elven woman stands, slightly hunched as she studies some papers on the table. She looks up as the party enters. Her slanted, almond shaped eyes and loose dark hair give her a wild, bohemian look. "I'm sorry, but we're closed today," she announces in a strangely musical voice.

Outside the furniture store, Andrath checks the list from Feorges. The address reads Sarah's Potions and Salves. He notices a small shop exactly across from Flett's of the very same name.

Cadmar
Saturday August 28th, 2004 2:56:46 AM

Cadmar's heart sinks. Can those be the the parents of the carpenters? The ranger's imagination suddenly feeds him a picture of the members of his own party visiting with his mom and dad and telling them that their son has been eaten by an assasin vine.

"Good afternoon" - he finally says. "I am Cadmar Gondaval from Jarlswolf. Could we please speak with the family of Lorinor and Gealan Flett, the carpenters? It is a personal business."

Andrath
Sunday August 29th, 2004 6:37:42 PM

Watching the rest of the party head off to their errands, Andrath figures that now is as good a time as any to pick up the items for Feorges. He heads across the street and enters the potion store. He looks around, and says to whomever greets him, "Well met; I am Andrath Silverhand, and I am here on an errand from Feorges the wizard, of Jarlswolf. He is looking for these items, and has given me this card so that you know he sent me." the elf hands over the list and the marked card.

Elerinn
Monday August 30th, 2004 4:19:12 AM

Elerinn really doesn't like the idea of going to the carpenter's family, but realizes it's something that has to be done. When Cadmar and he arrive at Flett's Fine Furniture, Elerinn is somewhat glad his friend speaks first. The gnome awaits the old woman's answer in silence.

Lorth
Monday August 30th, 2004 9:22:31 AM

Since this is bralin's business and Lorth is just accompanying him, he remains silent.

Bralin
Tuesday August 31st, 2004 12:04:06 AM

"I am here on a personal matter" the dwarf replies to the woman at the table. "My name is Bralin of the Clan Corregan and I carry news of Wynn Brightsong to to his kin. Are you the mother of Wynn Brightsong?"

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday August 31st, 2004 12:10:08 AM

At Flett's Fine Furniture, the woman in the glasses responds to Cadmar's serious inquiry, "I am their mother, and Harlan, here, is their father. What business do you have with us?" The woman's gaze passes over the gnome and rests on the paladin.

Over in the offices of Brightsong Trading Co. Alpynna Brightsong looks up to see a dwarf, a human and a halfling standing before her. Her heart sinks as she prepares herself for the worst, the confirmation of her son's death. She steadies herself against the table and says "I am Alpynna Brightsong."

Across the street from the furniture store, Andrath enters Sarah's Potions and Salves. The small shop is a jumble of jars, earthenware pots of various sizes, and wooden drawers of various sizes. Dried plants hang from the ceiling. Potted plants occupy the remaining spaces, spreading their fronds and leaves across the counters and shelves. An ivy grows up the sides of the window, it's tendrils finding a precarious purchase on the wooden window frames. A short, curly haired woman stands on a stool and reaches for a jar on the uppermost shelf. "I'll be with you in a minute," she says, retrieving the jar and climbing down from the stool.

"Ah, Feorges, how is he?" she asks as she accepts the list and studies Feorges' calling card. Sarah looks quizzically at Andrath, "I know you, don't I?" she says. "I didn't think you'd be interested in the arcane. Weren't you more of the guard type?" A large tabby cat makes it's way from behind the counter and begins to rub against the elf's legs, it's tail wrapping around his calves as it purrs.

Cadmar
Tuesday August 31st, 2004 1:54:59 AM

Something has been bugging Cadmar, and he couldn't quite put his finger on it until now. Finally it clicks. The bodies found in the wolf's lair were those of half-elves. These two nice people are humans.

"We might have some news for you, but first we would like to confirm that you are the people we should be talking to. Did your sons ever travel into Culverwood? And, strange question as it might seem, are they half-elves?"

Elerinn
Tuesday August 31st, 2004 3:47:18 AM

Elerinn nods when Cadmar asks if the bodies found where half-elven. He remembers them all too well, mummified and dangling from the spiders' webs. When his friend asks the parents if their sons have ever travelled into Culverwood, he adds: "More specifically, did they intend to enter Wyrmsfut?"

Again, he awaits their answers, not to give any bad news to the wrong people.

OOC - Elerinn actually remembers that the two Flett brothers were found on the way to the Wyrmsfut in the lair of a Dire Wolf - DM Bob

Lorth
Tuesday August 31st, 2004 9:26:58 AM

Lorth listens to the conversation at hand.

Bralin
Tuesday August 31st, 2004 10:09:33 PM

Being a dwarf of few words, Bralin announces rather formally, "lady, your son lives. He did seek me out in Floating City , sent there by my Clan to whom he owes a life dept for his rescue. In that great city he has assumed my life pledge, to serve 5 x 100 days, less the 20 I had already served at the bequest of the healer to whom I owe my life. When I took my leave, he was with a party serving and protecting a city orphanage."

His piece said, the dark dwarf bows his head briefly, and then fixes the she-elf with his dark, deep set eyes.

Andrath
Tuesday August 31st, 2004 10:28:45 PM

Andrath, never much of a cat person, studiously ignores the creature rubbing against his legs. "Of course, we've met before," he answers the apothecary. "I investigated that break-in here in the store some 2 years ago.

"Although," he smiles, "there wasn't much investigating required. I arrived at your request that morning to discover the would-be thief asleep at your doorstep, victim to your sleepy-gas trap. I am sure that he is still doing hard time in the coal mine.

"As for Feorges, he is doing fine. He gave me a crash course in wizardry, and I am still trying to take in what he taught me. You see, after the town guard, I took up the adventuring life, and have joined up with a bunch of adventurers that are based out of Jarlswolf. Most of our adventures have revolved around helping the Coven of Weal in Jarlswolf. I am the party's scout, and I have come to realize that a little magical knowledge can go a long way in helping fulfill that task. Thus, my apprenticeship with Feorges, who is doing just fine, by the way, and sends his regards.

"On the way into Magpie Crossing, we hitched a ride with a very talkative halfling, and he mentioned some sort of problems occurring here in Magpie. Can you fill me in about what is going on? Something about problems with the business turnover in town, and a shifty-eyed lieutenant named Orrin?"

DM Bob & Carla  Tabby Cat Cha d20+6=7
Tuesday August 31st, 2004 11:02:52 PM

"Why of course the boys spend time in the Culverwood. They travel far and wide to collect the fine woods we use to make our furniture," exclaims the fair woman with the preternatural look of youth. As she pushes a lock of silver hair behind her ear, Cadmar notices that it is the delicately pointed ear of an elf-woman. Before he or Elerinn can respond, her husband rises to his feet, and brings a hand crashing down on the counter where his heavy gold ring leaves a small indentation in the wood. Between clenched teeth, he spits out "take your prejudices elsewhere, sir! Here in Magpie there is tolerance for the mixing of bloods."

Simply, but eloquently, Bralin informs Wynn's mother that her son is alive and well and living with a group of do-gooders in Floating City Shock, relief, and joy, play across the beautiful elf's face until a final look of determination settles upon her countenance. Looking from Bralin to Alkali to Lorth, then back to Bralin she asks, "how do I know you speak the truth?"

Sarah lifts a curious eyebrow as the talkative elf explains himself. Tucking Feorges' card in the pocket of her smock, she reads the list, and gives a low whistle. "It will take a couple of days to assemble this order. Make yourself comfortable in town, and let me know where you'll be staying. I'll send someone 'round when everything is ready."

The list joins the card in Sarah's pocket. The curly haired woman looks about the room, although no one else is present, before answering Andrath's last questions. "Lieutenant Orrin, well he doesn't bother me, but I wouldn't want to cross him in a dark alley. A few businesses have changed hands. Tough times in the valley, I suppose. Shame about Lady Brightsong closing the Trading Company, though."

As the woman prattles on, the tabby nimbly jumps up on the counter and butts its head on the elf's chest, purring loudly. (Will Save 7, or Andrath succumbs and pets the cat!)

(OOC: Sorry about the mix-up. Mrs. Flett is an elf-woman.)

Cadmar
Wednesday September 1st, 2004 2:41:38 AM

Cadmar remains calm. "Absolutely no prejudices, sir. I have elves in my family, too."

Good Domi, how do I break the news to them?

Cadmar is silent for a moment, and then says quietly:

"I'm afraid we bring you tragic news."

"We have been recently traveling through Wyrmsfut when we got attacked by dire wolves."

"In their lair we found bodies of two half-elves, both slain by the creatures."

"Here is what we found on one of them."

Cadmar takes the letter out of his pocket and hands it to the man. Then he takes a pouch of coins found on the half-elves and puts it on the side of the counter.

What else can be said? They need to cope with that themselves.

Cadmar is not sure what to expect: shock, denial, anger, anything else? The elven woman, being much more long-lived than her sons, must have expected them to die before her, but not that soon. Judging by the age of their father they both must have been very young by half-elven standards.

Elerinn listens to Cadmar's monologue, which is formal, yet respectfull. The gnome wonders how he would have told the parents about their deceased sons. He realizes his mistake when Cadmar's talks about the dire wolves, instead of spiders.

He looks at the elven mother, suddenly realizing the total alien nature of the elves. In their long lives, they see everyone but their own full-blood kin around them getting old and weak.

Wynn removes a gold earring in the shape of a musical clef and places it in Bralin's hand, "it was a gift from my mother and she will know it."

Bralin reaches into a small pocket and withdraws a trinket. Reaching out towards Lady Brightsong, he holds the tiny item pinched between his thumb and index where it dangles and glints in a tiny shaft of light.

"Your son said you would know it."

Andrath
Wednesday September 1st, 2004 9:30:55 PM

Andrath absent-mindedly scratches the cat behind the ears. He never had much use for cats, but this one is being downright over the top. Maybe a little affection, and it will go away.

"I expect my friends and I will be staying at the Dragon Fly Inn, if you can send the message over there, that would be fine."

Unless the apothecary has anything further to add, Andrath leaves the shop, waits out front for the others to be finished. As he waits, he goes over and over the memory tricks that Feorges taught him. He remembers that they still need to go and see the wagoneers that they helped on the way to Wyrmsfut.

Cadmar says his piece and the elven woman brings a hand up to her mouth, a startled look in her eyes. Leaning forward on the counter, the elderly but sinewy Harlan growls, "I don't know what you think you're playing at. Boys !" At the call from their father, two young adult half-elves wearing leather aprons push through the swinging doors behind the counter. Both are blonde, with blue eyes like their mother. The taller and eldest is heavier and built like his father. A dusting of sawdust covers most of his person. The younger is slight with long slender fingers stained by dye. The silver haired woman picks up the letter as if it would scorch her fingers, then her eyes roll back in her head and she starts to topple. "Gealan! Your mother!" shouts the man.

Alpynna reaches out and enfolds the dwarf's rough hand for a moment before collecting the trinket. "Wynn lives!" She says in a raspy voice. "My son lives!" Her eyes gleam with unshed tears. "Tell me how he was when last you saw him." Taking in the silent paladin and the small witch, she asks, "did you know my son?"

Sarah whistles low and soft. "Dragon Fly Inn! The adventuring life must be good to you. I figured you more the "Shadfly Inn" type." With that she takes Feorge's list from her pocket, and turns to the shelves and drawers behind her, calling at the last moment, "mind you, don't let the cat out!" (Dex Check=15, or the cat slips out the door.)

Cadmar
Thursday September 2nd, 2004 5:14:11 AM

"Playing? I assure you we would never play with such matters. What do you take us for, sir, some kind of monsters?"

"We are travelers. We found bodies of two victims of the wolves and gave them proper burial. The letter we found on them made us believe they were your sons. I am very happy to find that we were mistaken. I apologize for causing you and your wife such distress."

"Perhaps it would be best if we left now. If you ever figure out who they might have been and where their kin lives we would like to hear about it. We will be staying in Magpie Crossing for a while."

Cadmar takes the pouch of coins from the counter. If the family of the two men is not found maybe it should be donated to some temple in memory of the departed souls.

One thing is for sure, the letter means something to the lady. We will be hearing from her soon. I'm not sure though if it is something she wants to share with her husband, who didn't seem overly concerned with it. Personal secret? We'll see.

Unless the Fletts or Elerinn want to continue the conversation Cadmar suggest leaving and going in search of the rest of the party. He is still greatly concerned with the gossip about Wynn, because he mistakenly believes his accident happened after he arrived at Plateau City.

As he prepares to leave the word "doppelgangers" crosses his mind, but he dismisses it as just his paranoia speaking.

Elerinn is too shocked to say anything to the Flett's, and wonders how the half-elven boys can still be alive. The gnome follows his friend outside the Flett's store and the only thing he can say is: "That was really strange..."

Suddenly Elerinn is overwhelmed by a feeling of enormous curiousity and he almost goes back into the store for more information. But he realizes that Cadmar's decision, leaving the woman alone for some time, might be wiser.

[OOC: Made the dex check to deal with that pesky feline! Rolled a 24.]

Deftly holding the cat inside the shop with his foot, Andrath calls out over his shoulder, "Of course, I meant the Shadfly Inn. Adventuring may be lucrative, but not that much! Please send the messenger to the Shadfly Inn." Then the elf quickly pulls the door shut, trapping the cat in the store. "Stupid cat!" he thinks to himself.

Stepping outside the shop to wait for the others to return, so they can go onto the wagoneers', Andrath pulls out his wizard's workbook, to study a little more. Partway through the book, he discovers a page written in Feorges' hand, that describes the value of a wizard's familiar, and how to summon the creature. It is rather vague as to the types of creatures that come to the summoner, but states that the creature will definitely fit the character of the wizard. The last passage says:

Sometime over the next few days, you need to spend 24 hours ouside, preferably in town. Look in the bottom of your backpack, and you will find a small pouch of various sweets and small trinkets. Spread them around you in a quiet place somewhere inside the town limits, and prepare to spend the night there. Sometime during the next 24-hour period, a familiar will show up, I promise. Give it a suitable name, and treat it with respect, and you will find it a wonderful companion.

Andrath takes off his pack and puts away his book, then feels down to the bottom. He finds the small pouch, exactly as described, and takes a look inside, finding some small candies, small fake gems, and some bits of coloured paper. "I wonder what kind of creature will be attracted by these things? I hope its not a cat!" he mumbles to himself.

Then he puts everything away and waits for the others to join up with him, trying to remember where Samuel and Sons Wagonmasters are located. He recollects that they can be found on Water Street, down by the docks.

Bralin steps back from the elven woman, just in case she tries to embrace him, for she is obviously overwhelmed by the news she has just recieved. "I knew him not at all" the dwarf states matter-of-factly, "but my clan rescued him in the red hills and trusted him enough to have him take my place and not dishonor the name Corregan."

(MikeK resumes posting tomorrow.)

In truth, Bralin wonders if the half-elf is still alive for he did not look so sturdy.

Andrath checks out of Sarah's Potion's and Salves after blocking the affectionate cat's exit. He slouches comfortably against the front of the building, and witnesses Cadmar and Elerinn beat a hasty retreat from the furniture makers'. As Elerinn considers returning to the shop, he hears a 'shlick' as someone slides a bolt in place, and the 'OPEN' sign in the window is quickly flipped over to 'CLOSED'.

Andrath, Cadmar, and Elerinn, please roll a spot check 18 to Highlight to display spoiler: {notice someone, a man of middle years, is watching from the shadows between Sarah's Potions and Salves and the cobbler shop next door.}

Back at Brightsong Trading Company the door to the office is thrust open as a young elven male bursts in. He looks a little taken aback by what he sees and his eyes dart from the party members to the lady. "Shall I take the last of your belongings, ma'am?" he gently enquires. Bralin recognizes the youth as the one who earlier was posting notices about the closure and sale of the business.

Alpynna Brightsong excuses herself promising to return shortly, and disappears into a back room leaving Bralin, Alkali, Lorth, and the young elf in an uncomfortable silence.

Finding Andrath outside Cadmar suggests joining the members of the party at the Wynnsong Trading Company.

Andrath  d20+15=25
Friday September 3rd, 2004 7:26:29 PM

Andrath moves across the street to meet with Camdmar and Elerinn just exiting the furniture maker's. He catches a movement out of the corner of his eye, and notices a furtive-looking figure watching the three party members, from the alley beside the shop he has just exited. [OOC: Made the spot check with a 25.]

Meeting up with the other two, he asks, "What did you discover at the furniture shop? I have to wait in town for at least two days for the apothecary to get Feorges' order together. Let's go over to Wynn's trading company and see what the others found out."

As the three friends make their way down the street to meet with the others, Andrath says out of the corner of his mouth, "Don't look now, but there is someone watching us from the alley beside Sarah's potion shop. I will keep an eye on him and see if he follows us. Maybe, once we are together, we will want to set up an ambush and see if we can capture him and ask him what is going on?"

Cadmar
Saturday September 4th, 2004 6:10:43 AM

Cadmar is visibly distracted, as if he was pondering something in his head. He opens his mouth a few times as if he was about to say something, but then changes his mind. Finally he says:

"Friends, this is where we part ways. I have been doing a lot of soul searching. My heart stayed in Jarlswolf and all my thoughts go to Cassandra."

"During our travels I have already gathered enough gold to travel with my dad to some large city and have his leg regenerated. I have also seen what adventuring is like and I think I might not be cut out for it. Each time I recall any of the moments when I came close to death shivers go down my spine."

"I will be going back to Jarlswolf today. Each time you will be passing through our town I will very gladly listen to your tales of adventure and buy you a round of drinks."

Cadmar waits for the rest of the party and shakes hands with everyone.

"I have a parting gift for you - my collection of seals. May they serve you well and protect you from harm. May the path of Domi be always yours." Cadmar takes out several seals and hands them to the party.

"I have one last request." Cadmar says. "I understand the Wynnsong Trading Company is about to go out of business because of all the wealth they lost in that shipwreck. Here is part of my fortune." Cadmar takes out two bright emeralds. "I don't know if this is enough to put them back in business, but I hope so. It is a loan. They can pay it back without interest whenever it will be convenient for them."

It seems as if a great weight has been lifted from Cadmar's shoulders. He now stands tall and strong. Somehow, somewhere along the way, a boy he was in the beginning of his travels has turned into a man. The ranger smiles widely, waves his hand for a last time, and sets his feet on the road leading back to Jarlswolf. Soon he can be heard whistling his favourite tune:

"Oh beautiful Culverwood
So vast, so tall, so proud, so green
Where since forever maples stood
Wood full of wonders never seen
Into you to his heart's delight
Young ranger wandered in the night..."

Saturday September 4th, 2004 10:17:23 AM

In the offices of Brightsong Trading Company the elven youth, Bralin, Lorth, and Elerinn stand in uncomfortable silence. The slight youth looks over in the direction of the adventurer's once or twice as if wanting to say something, but checks himself. Finally he mutters, 'wasn't right what they did to the Lady." Just at it appears that he is about to confide in the group, the Lady returns. Her eyes are bright, and her cheeks a little damp, but she has dried her tears and is smiling. The she-elf hands a rather large, but light-weight wooden box to the elf. It has hinged legs folded up underneath like some sort of portable table or desk. "This is the last of the documents. Deliver them to the residence."

Lady Brightsong then thanks the three who remain standing in front of her. "I will forever be in your debt for the good news you have brought me regarding my son." The elven woman offers her hand to each adventurer, and after shaking Bralin's hand leans over and places a light kiss on his cheek. "Do not worry about me. Although the company is gone, I have personal resources and friends." With that, the three are shown out.

Andrath notices a skulking figure in the lane-way between two shops. He lets a pensive Cadmar, and silent Elerinn in on his findings as they in turn share their information about the dead (or not so dead) Flett brothers. Andrath leads the way towards Wynn's family's former business, and they enter the yard just as Bralin, Lorth and Alkali exit. Andrath points out "Samuel and Son's" visible beyond the yard, down by the docks.

Before any further steps are taken, a lonesome Cadmar confesses his homesickness and parts ways with the group. The paladin, sorcerer, rogue, witch, and cleric/fighter wonder what is next?

Andrath  d20+15=20
Sunday September 5th, 2004 9:04:00 PM

Once again, Andrath is surprised by the sudden departure of another one of the party members. He shakes Cadmar's hand, and says, "Cadmar, I will be sorry to see you go, but I am happy that you are able to fulfill your quest. We will be sure to drop in and see you in Jarlswolf. Bralin, why don't you take the gems and see if you can catch Lady Brightsong before she leaves. While you are there, why don't you ask her what is going on with the businesses in town."

Then the elf leads the way to Samuel and Son's. On the way, he keeps his eyes open for anyone watching the group. [OOC: Spot check of 20] Upon entering the shop, he greets the people inside. "Well met; I am glad that you were able to make it back safe and sound. We saw your message on the Adventurers' Board in Jarlswolf, and here we are."

Monday September 6th, 2004 4:53:08 PM

The dwarf nods a farewell to Cadmar. He is becoming concerned with what is quickly becoming an ill-fated group, but resolves to continue journeying with them.

With another nod at Andrath, he takes the pouch of gems and retraces his steps back to the Brightsong Trading Company. Walking (unannounced) into the office, he presents the bag to Lady Brightsong.
"Cadmar of Jalswolf bids ye to take these gems as a loan to continue your business. He does so without demand of interest in honor of his friendship with your son."

Elerinn
Monday September 6th, 2004 6:56:42 PM

When Cadmar declares his sudden departure, Elerinn is somewhat shocked. Although the group's members seem to change constantly, he isn't quite used to it, yet. With a bit of a sad look on his face, the gnome shakes Cadmar's hand and says: "I'm sorry you have to go, Cadmar, but I guess you've chosen the right thing. I hope you will be able to help your father. You know, with his leg. May Wardd guide you, wherever your path leads."

When Cadmar leaves, Elerinn looks at the others, uncertain what to do or where to go.

DM Bob & Carla

Alpynna Brightsong is surprised to see the dwarf return and even more surprised at the sight of the emeralds. With a gentle smile she curls Bralin's hand back around the gems and their bag. "The buildings have already been sold, and frankly, without Wynn, my heart isn't in it." With that, she once again sees Bralin to the door and exits herself. Pocketing the key after locking the door she disappears up the narrow street back towards the center of town.

Andrath checks to see if the party is being trailed, but there is no sign of the snoop from the alley.

Saddened by Cadmar's sudden departure, the rest of the party eventually wends their way to the wagoner's where they are greeted by an excited Marcus. "Watcher been doin' since you saved me pa's wagon?" The boy jumps around flailing away as if brandishing a rapier. "Killed any dragons?" The boy's pestering stops when a scowling Samuel enters through the back door. "Tend to the oxen, boy, or no meeting for you tomorrow!" Marcus scurries off, motivated to do his duty by his father's threatening tone.

Samuel confides, "there's an open house tomorrow at the community center put on by some folks from the Woldian League of Adventurers. They're thinkin' on the idea of establishin' an outpost in Magpie Crossing. Fancy that! I promised Marcus, I'd bring 'im for the story-tellin' an' such." During the conversation, the wagon master was busy opening a strong box. Holding out 3 leather pouches he adds, "this be your reward* for capturin' Golroth an' his gang. Good job that! Cap'n Greenblade was right happy to make 'em a cosy home over at the castle." Samual chuckles at his little joke, and sees the group to the door. Looking out he sees the deepening sky and adds, "time to close up an 'ead home. Wonder what the missus has planned for dinner?"

* reward Golroth (leader) 400 GP, Imrel and Rauglin (co-horts) 150 GP each. Total 700 GP bounty for capture, live.

Bralin silently nods acceptance of Lady Brightsong's decision.

As the meeting with Samuel breaks up, he asks the wagonmaster, "Can ye suggest an inn for our night's stay?"

Elerinn
Tuesday September 7th, 2004 5:40:21 PM

Elerinn thanks Marcus and is excited about what he has to say about the Woldian League of Adventurer's Open House.
To his companions, he says: "I'd like to go to that meeting tommorow. Just to see what this League is all about." The gnome smiles and continues: "And maybe see some celebrities!"

Andrath
Tuesday September 7th, 2004 11:33:12 PM

Andrath accepts the gems from Bralin, and says, "I can return these to Cadmar the next time that we see him in Jarlswolf. What did you find out from Lady Brightsong when you asked her what is going on here in Magpie Crossing?"

At the wagoneers', Andrath takes the coins from Samuel, and counts out 100 gp, giving them back. "This is your cut, for transporting them safely in your custody back here to Magpie Crossing." Then the elf counts out the remainder, and gives 100 gp each to the six remaining party members. "Reward for a job well done, right?"

"I figure that we can spend the night at the Shadfly Inn. After supper, I will have to leave you for 24 hours, while I carry out part of my initiation into becoming a wizard. So, I will miss the open house for the Woldian League of Adventurers."

Then he turns to Samuel, and asks, "Now, what can you tell us about what is going on with the businesses here in Magpie Crossing? A number of businesses have changed here from when I used to work for the town watch."

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday September 8th, 2004 12:25:29 AM

Standing on the threshold of his business Samuel flushes red at Lorth's praise then looks surprised and pleased when Andrath gives him the coins, "Why thankee! " He says with a big smile, pocketing the gift. " 't will be useful, for sure." The wagoner scratches his grizzled chin at Andrath's question concerning business turnover in Magpie Crossing. "Can't rightly say what's been goin' on, but some folks that been in business a long time just up and left. Dunno why. New folks is nice enough." He seems to reflect a little, "bad business over at Brightsong Trading. One loss after 'nother. Summat say it was done a'purpose to 'em. I dunno."

Bralin's question brings a big smile to the man's face and he advises the party theShadfly Inn is the place for them. "No'wat beats that Hildy for pies. Summat 'bout 'lil folks an' pies!" He winks at Alkali, and slaps Elerinn on the shoulder, "tell 'em Samuel sent ya' and have Lincoln put a round on my tab!"

Although he is not familiar with the owners, Andrath remembers the architecturally unique building that is the Shadfly Inn. Constructed in a triangular shape, the front door is set into the apex of the triangle and opens into a large room that wraps around a triangle shaped bar. Large windows with the shutters thrown wide let in plenty of sunlight. A set of stairs doubles back on itself at the rear of the room leading to sleeping chambers above.

Andrath asks Bralin, "What did you find out from Lady Brightsong when you asked her what is going on here in Magpie Crossing?"

Bralin looks blankly at the rogue.
"I made no such query," he replies, genuinely surprised.
"Is there trouble in the town?"
The dwarf has been completely oblivious of the mood in the area.

He pays a bit more attention to Samuel, but the man tells nothing but innuendo and hear-say. Bralin quickly gives up. Deciphering the mysteries of people is beyond him.

Bralin accompanies the rest to the Shadfly Inn.

Elerinn
Wednesday September 8th, 2004 4:25:12 PM

Elerinn follows along towards the Shadfly Inn, feeling quite tired. Like Bralin, he isn't able to understand Samuel's riddled words.
He is pretty anxious to go to the League of Adventurer's open house tommorow and decides he is going to sleep early, this evening.

Andrath
Wednesday September 8th, 2004 8:55:11 PM

Something that Samuel says twigs Andrath's ear. "What do you mean that things have been going wrong at Brightsong Trading? What exactly happened to them? We are friends with Wynn Brightsong, and if something has happened to his family, I am sure that he would want us to look into it. What do you mean by something being done to them 'on purpose'? Who is saying such things?"

Once the party has finished talking with Samuel and son, Andrath says, "So, I guess most of us will meet with you tomorrow at the meeting, although I don't think that I will be able to make it. So, take care until we meet up on the road again."

Outside the wagoneers' shop, Andrath says, "Before we head over to the Shadfly, I suggest we go back to Flett's Fine Furniture and check on the lady there. Cadmar said that she fainted; maybe we can look in on her and make sure that she is OK. Bralin, maybe your healing could help?" Then the elf makes his way to the furniture shop, accompanied by whomever wants to go with him. To the others, he says, "The Shadfly is just over there. Why don't you arrange rooms for the night and we will join with you."

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday September 9th, 2004 12:25:43 AM

Samuel looks a little uncomfortable at Andrath's questioning about the Brightsong's affairs. "Dunno. Jess what people say, y'know? All those setbacks. One bad business loss after another. Then the ship goin' down with the son aboard. Ship looked fine when it set out. Outfitted right proper. Dunno' what happened, an' the lady would never say if summat was amiss." Marcus pops out from behind the building, and Samuel hustles off, "tomorrow it is, then!" he calls as he hurries home.

In the growing twilight, the party makes for the Shadfly Inn. The rogue tries the door of the furniture makers, but it is locked. There are no lights on inside and a 'Closed' sign is visible in the window. Across the street, Sarah's Potions and Salves is dark as well, although the glowing eyes of a cat can be seen behind a window. The inn is located where the road forms a 'V', with one branch going off towards Strongwind Castle and the other towards Jarlswolf and the route the party followed into town.

The inn is clean, warm, and surprisingly quiet, but then it is a work-day night. Well worn seats at the bar are claimed by a trio of regulars. A small group talk and laugh over at a table in a corner near the front of the tavern, not far from the door. A lone figure eats a quiet meal by the hearth. A young couple hold hands over a small table by a window. Most of tonight's action is at the front of the place, the back by the stairs in shadow.

Lincoln and Hildy Horncroft, two middle-aged Halflings greet the newcomers and offer room and board for 1 GP each per day. Dinner this evening is chicken pie.

Hildy points out the group in colourful robes and travelling gear, "here for the meeting tomorrow. We're just about full up, but there are still two rooms available."

Thursday September 9th, 2004 8:16:27 AM

"Fine lady, I think my companions and I will be taking those last two rooms. I would love to try some of your chicken pie, it seems your quite famous around these parts for your cooking.", Lorth bows his head slightly and awaits his friends.

From Under The Stairs
Thursday September 9th, 2004 1:04:56 PM

A fine somewhat rectangular outline under the stairway, angle cut at the top to follow the slope of the stringer, reveals a door to a room under the stairs that must be quite small. The door swings outward cautiously. A short crest of mouse brown hair, peers out from within. And, when it appears that no one is walking by who might accidentally walk into the door, it opens more fully. A human figure emerges and stands out of a stoop, coming to not much more in height than the top point of the doorway itself.

Though the soft brown hair stands in a crest that folds down over pale forehead, it is shaved quite close along sides and back. That, along with the loose home-spun clothing, work to hide the figure's gender. Brown eyes with dark lashes take in the room. Small feet pad across the floor to a colorful group graced with traveling gear.

Perhaps it is a softness of the figure's cheek, or perhaps something in the fullness of the figures lips, but up close, the impression is most decidedly female.

"Hello," the voice, though quiet, is clear, penetrating in its stillness, "my name is Harvest Moon. You will be in attendance at the League of Adventurers meeting tomorrow?"

The dwarf nods with Lorth. Two rooms for five people should suffice.

Concluding the colorful group are members of the WLA, and lacking the social grace to just wait until tomorrow, Bralin clomps up to the group, stopping next to the soft looking human.
"I am Bralin, of the clan Corregan," he announces without preamble. "Be ye members of the Woldian League? I am most curious concerning the membership qualifications."

Andrath
Thursday September 9th, 2004 9:40:07 PM

Andrath quickly scans the customers at the Shadfly, then addresses the innkeepers, "Well met again, Master and Lady Horncroft. You may not remember me. Up until a few months ago, I worked here in town for the guard. About two years ago, I helped break up that fight in here, that started between those farmers that had had a little too much to drink. I forget what they were fighting about, but I do remember they were very sheepish the next morning when we let them out of the jail. I am glad that you didn't press charges, since they did pay restitution, as well as the fine."

"A big piece of your chicken pot pie sounds great, and a glass of mead to wash it down, if you don't mind." He puts 5 gold pieces on the table, to cover a couple of nights lodging, food, and a moderate amout to drink."

"Tonight, after supper, I need to spend the night outside, behind the inn, to complete some specialized training that I am taking. But I certainly don't mind paying to cover my bed in the room, especially since it looks like it will be very busy."

Looking more closely at the other customers, Andrath again addresses the two halfling innkeepers, "So, what is new in the Crossing? It's a shame that Brightsong Trading had to close. What happened; I thought that they were doing well?"

[OOC: Since Andrath did live in this town for a number of years, does he recognize any of the other customers? Perhaps someone he can ask about what is new in town?]

Lastly, the elf looks at the newcomer, and answers, "Hello, my name is Andrath. I won't be attending the meeting tomorrow, but some of my friends likely will be. Are you part of the League?"

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday September 9th, 2004 11:07:33 PM

"Thought you looked familiar" Lincoln answers a talkative Andrath. "You haven't been around for a while." The halfling accepts the money for the rooms and raises an eyebrow when Andrath talks of spending time behind the inn. When asked about the goings on in Magpie Crossing, Lincoln scratches his head and thinks for a moment. "Things have been going poorly here for some time, businesses closing up and being sold, farmers losing livestock and crops, and new folks arriving to take over those that have gone under. Travellers robbed and frightened off. Brightsong Trading used to be the biggest employer in town, now even they're closed. Couple o' clients didn't pay their bills and a couple more cancelled big orders I heard. Then Master Wynn's ship never arrives at New Elleana . That was the final straw. They'd bet everything on that shipment. Best ship and crew they had and it sinks without a trace. Poor Lady Brightsong was in a terrible way".

Hildy interrupts and ushers Lorth, Andrath, and the others over to a table in the corner and settles them in. She flushes slightly at the talk of her 'famous' pies and heads towards what must be the kitchen to fetch tonight's fare for each of them. "Lincoln" she calls as she disappears into the kitchen, "see they have something to drink". Lincoln mumbles something about "knowing his job" before emerging from behind the bar. The portly halfling polishes the inside of a glass mug with a bar cloth as he approaches. Two of the patrons at the bar call for another round and he nods in acknowledgment. "Sure is nice to see so many folk attending this open-house," he says to the party. "Not that I take much stock in this adventuring nonsense mind you, but business has been poor of late and these folks seem decent enough" he nods his head towards the table of colorful characters across the room. "Now, what can I get you?" he asks those at the table.

A tall slender looking man with spectacles and a long sharp nose looks up from his beer and answers Bralin " A stout heart and a desire to help others in the battle against evil, that's all that's required of a man... or a dwarf' he answers Bralin. "We are all members of the League" he continues. "Why don't you visit us tomorrow at the community center, ask for me, I am called Gaylon" he says and offers Bralin his hand in friendship. Another of the men at the table looks up at Harvest Moon who has also approached their table. "Are you also interested little brown one?"

Hildy re-emerges from the kitchen bearing a tray with 5 large slices of chicken pie and proceeds to lay them out at the table. She finds knives and forks within the pockets of her apron and lays them next to each of the plates. "Now then young man", she says to Lorth, "best eat it while it's still hot". Each piece looks to be one quarter of an entire pie, and is thick with potatoes, vegetables, chicken, and a creamy sauce.

Across the room a lone man with short cropped grey hair fixes Lorth with an intense stare before returning to his own meal. The young couple seems oblivious to all around them, and Lincoln busily draws mugs of ale from the taps behind the bar.

[OOC Andrath vaguely recollects one or two of the patrons at the bar but cannot recall their names.]

Lorth doesn't even notice the man who was staring at him, he is engrossed in his chicken pie. After eating, Lorth helps cleanup the table, then moves to his room so that he may clean his equipment.

Harvest Moon
Friday September 10th, 2004 11:05:09 AM

Harvest Moon simply nods her head in reply. Her eyes drift to the dwarf who had also expressed interest in this group from The League. Her head tips quizzically to the side in an unconscious gesture as she spends a moment in observation.

Returning attention to the Leaguesman, "Why do you train only in weapons with blades or points?" she asks without preamble.

Harvest is addressed from a different direction before the Leaguer can form an answer. The girl turns her head and meets the greeting with a polite smile. "Hello," she replies, looking up into the eyes of a blonde elf, "my name is Harvest Moon. No. I'm not a member of the League. I am thinking of applying."

A beat passes. Thoughts move across her face like the shadows of clouds over the land. When she speaks, her voice is filled with innocent curiosity. "If your friends will be attending the meeting, why are you staying behind?"

Bralin
Friday September 10th, 2004 3:38:47 PM

Bralin takes the offered hand.
"Aye", he replies to Gaylan. "I will do that."

Ignoring the newcomer, the dwarf joins Lorth and consumes a healthy portion of chicken pie.

He too plans to adjurn to his room, should nothing else distract him.

Bralin and Elerinn retire early with visions of the WLA dancing in their heads. Lorth also calls it an early night, spending some time cleaning his equipment in that meticulous fashion common to paladins.

Andrath prepares for an all-nighter in the alley behind the inn. With the pouch of items provided by Feorges, and some patience, the elf hopes to attract a tough and intelligent creature who might serve as a companion and a servant. On his way out, he is intrigued by the little brown girl. Harvest Moon is likewise intrigued by Andrath's quest.

The elf answers the curious young lady, "I have recently just started my training as a wizard, and my tutor has given me some instructions to be able to attract a familiar. I need to spend the next 24 hours or so in the alley, to see what comes to my call."

Assuming there is no reason to stay in the inn, Andrath makes his way outside to the alleyway. He makes himself comfortable, using his pack for a pillow, and covering himself with his cloak. He carefully spreads the items from the pouch in a small circle beside him, and leans back onto the backpack. He wants to stay awake for the night, to see what happens next. He repeats a little manta to himself as his eyes adjust to the darkening gloom, "No cat, no cat, no cat, no cat, no ..."

Wizard?

Harvest quietly observes the elf: His face, his body, the way he moves.

Wizard?

She looks back to the colorful group of adventurers, members of The League. They don't look inclined to answer her question.

Note: Questions asked with brevity and directness, though more efficient, sometimes have a less than desirable result. Find out when to use them and when not to use them.

Her attention returns to the 'Wizard in training.'

Andrath

She catches his retreating back as he makes his way out to the alley. Harvest follows. On the way, she passes a table with a plate of chicken pie, three-quarters eaten and then left. It will go to waste. She takes it with her.

When Harvest emerges into the cool night air, he is on the ground with various items arrayed upon the ground around him. Harvest seeks out a low perch from which she can sit and look down onto the alley. She climbs up with her plate of partially consumed chicken pie. Once aloft, she takes a small mouthful. Sitting quietly, she watches.

"May I watch?" she asks into the darkness.

Sunday September 12th, 2004 10:36:25 PM

An exhausted Alkali follows Elerinn, Bralin, and Lorth to a comfortable chamber on the second floor. The trip from Jarlswolf, and the afternoon of news sharing has left the party quite worn out. The night is dreamless for some, and plagued by nightmares for others.

Andrath is open with the curious stranger, and explains his quest. As he leaves the warmth of the inn, he is trailed by the newcomer who watches the elf's peculiar preparations. Harvest Moon finds a perch on top of some stacked wooden crates. As she sits and nibbles the remains of chicken pie abandoned by the halfling witch a dog appears at the entrance of the alley. The dog raises its head to sniff the air, but then moves on. The night is cool, and a mist from Magpie Lake reaches tendrils into the streets and alleyways of the town. A tiny snake appears seemingly from nowhere and just as quickly disappears.

The fog lends the night a surreal quality as halos of illumination reflect out from any light source. The flickering soot encrusted lantern above the small door at the back of the inn casts an eerie shadow out of which emerges a small rodent with a pointed snout and long, sparsely haired tail. The creature approaches the circle of small candies, small fake gems, and bits of coloured paper laid out by Andrath. It picks up the largest gem in its minute paws and sitting on its haunches appears to evaluate the item. The elf can see that the creature is a rat, albeit a rather small one.

The silence of the night is interrupted by a scuffing of boots on cobblestones, and a gruff call from the alley entrance, "Who goes there?" The noise sends the small rat scurrying...right into a pocket of Andrath's pack. (Andrath and Harvest Moon Hide Check=14 or be seen) It is hard to see who is behind the bullseye lantern (Andrath and Harvest Moon Spot Check=17).

If able to see past the glare Highlight to display spoiler: { you will notice a medium sized man of muscular build with an obvious 24 hours growth of stubble. His clothing bear the insignia of the garrison stationed at Strongwind Castle}

Harvest Moon hides. She relaxes to non-motion. (Hide 27)

To turn and look, is an act. An act courts reaction.

Like the passage of the air or the movement of the earth, without resistance, without aim, Harvest Moon's upper body drifts into a slump. Her head leads the movement down until she is seated atop the boxes, folded over, looking behind herself under her arm. The figure is upside-down and shrouded in lantern light. (Spot 29) His appearance as a man-at-arms has neutral bearing. His question is simple.

Action, however, has a natural rhythm. Find it's moments, and place yourself within it.

Andrath peers through the light carried by the figure at the end of the alley, and determines that it is likely one of the night watch. [OOC: made the spot check with a 22.] He briefly thinks to hide in the alley, but then realizes that he is not actually doing anything wrong. He quickly throws the top of his pack shut (not sealing it tight), and shoves it on top of the familiar attractant. Then he rises to his feet and says, "Good evening. My name is Andrath Silverhand, and I have recently returned here to Magpie Crossing. I used to work for the town guard. I am learning the wizard's trade right now, and I have to spend the evening out of doors, tonight, as part of the training. My friends are bunking here in the Shadfly Inn right now. If there is a cost to staying inside town limits, out of doors like this, I would be willing to pay the fee. Would 10 gp suffice?" He reaches into his belt pouch and counts out 10 gold pieces, offering them to the guard.

The more sensible members of the party snooze soundly in their comfortable beds on the second floor of the Shadfly Inn unaware of what is going on in the alley behind the place.

When the town's night patrol made up of soldiers from the garrison shine their lantern down the alley, Harvest Moon does the sensible thing and blends into the shadows. The bold elf, sensing the possibility of kindred spirits in the guards, makes his introductions.

"Vagabonds and mischief makers aren't welcome in Magpie Crossing 'ya know! 'An there's a curfew unless you've got a pass from the Reeve," says one of the soldiers moving towards the rogue. "Stand down, sergeant" says the man holding the lantern, in the sure voice of command. The speaker advances, grimacing at the rogue and showing tightly packed and somewhat crooked teeth. As he stares at Andrath, one of his eyes twitches. "It won't do to bribe the guard," he hisses in a low voice, adding "collect your things, and off with you. If we find you out again this night, it will be a cell in the castle for you." The lieutenant, for that is what his insignia indicates, holds the lantern out and gestures for his men to clear away from the mouth of the alley and allow the rogue to pass.

For a moment Andrath has a sensation as if he is not alone. For just a fraction of a moment he senses emotions that are not his own...fear, and curiosity...and then they are gone.

On the horizon the sky starts to turn yellow, green, and pink like a great bruise as the sun starts its ascent.

Harvest Moon
Tuesday September 14th, 2004 11:37:34 AM

Harvest remains still until the guards file out of the alley. She then rolls from the stack of boxes like a bundle of rags falling to the ground.

The small brown girl seeks out the elf, Andrath Silverhand again.

Looking up into his face, she searches for any sign that he might be different than he had been the night before.

"They did not take your money," she says, the uninflected tone of her voice leaving the intent of her statement in doubt. "The law here is better," she comments, swinging her gaze back toward the alley.

A subtle return of color to their surroundings reminds the rag-clad girl that this is the day of the meeting. The Woldian League of Adventurers would be assembling ... their best?

"A rat has jumped into your pack, Andrath Silverhand," she says without turning her eyes back to him.

Elerinn
Tuesday September 14th, 2004 12:23:20 PM

Elerinn rises as soon as the first sunlight enters the Shadfly Inn's chambers. He quickly prepares for breakfast and is, for the second time, intrigued by Bralin's exotic ritual. But with other things on his mind, he again quickly forgets about it. During breakfast, the only thing the young gnome can think of is the League.

As soon as the sorcerer spots Andrath, he asks the man how he is progressing towards becoming a man of wizardry.

Andrath
Tuesday September 14th, 2004 9:24:05 PM

Andrath grabs his pack, scooping the familiar attractant into it. He straightens up and moves past the guard troop, thinking, "A curfew? That is new. I wonder what that is all about?"

He says to the lieutenant, "Alright, I will go inside. I have paid for a bed in the Inn, so there is no problem. As for the offered fee, I meant no offense."

Once inside the inn, he meets up with the little newcomer, who reminds him of the rat in his pack. He heads over to one of the windows that face back into the alley, and opens the shutter. Then, he opens the backpack and turns it to face out the window, and says, "OK, little one. Out you go. I am sure the proprietors would not be happy to find you in the Inn when they rise." He tries to shoo the rat out of the pack and out the window back into the alley.

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday September 14th, 2004 11:45:03 PM

Andrath and Harvest Moon creep back into the inn. A light glows in the kitchen and there is the sound of utensils scraping against pots, and cupboard doors opening and banging shut. Good smells start to waft into the great room. The elf tries to dump the contents in the pocket of his pack out the window, but when he checks on his success, he sees two beady eyes staring up at him from deep in the pocket. Andrath senses a momentary impression of tranquil happiness that is not from his own consciousness.

Lincoln seems startled to see folks up so early, but he nods a "'mornin'" to the small female, and the elf with the short blonde hair. "Care for some breakfast?" he asks as he lights a couple of lanterns in the room.

The lanterns aren't needed for long, for soon the bright light of a fair day makes it's way across the sky and through the windows of the Shadfly Inn. The great room is soon full as boarders make their way down for breakfast, and a few locals come for the breakfast special.

Most of the Swords of Light are up quite early, but not as early as the officers of the Woldian League of Adventurers. Elerinn is distracted by the party from the night before. The colorful outfits have been replaced by exotic foreign looking clothing and remarkable armor. An assortment of uncommon weaponry leans against the wall near the door. Several of the animated party sport an intriguing red badge affixed over the left breast. The one named Gaylon has three tines on his badge setting him apart from the others.

Hildy and another female halfing are busy serving up slices of the halfing's own concoction. "Hildy calls it Breakfast Pie. Gots eggs, an' cheese, an' bits of onion and bacon in it," volunteers Lincoln as he holds up two steaming carafes. "Tea or joe?" he asks.

"Study the arcane arts as well, Boo. Yes, I know. You cannot hide that look from me." His words reprimand. But his eyes remain warm. "Study of the arcane does involve quite a bit of reading. But reading in and of itself is good for you." For him, she tries.

"Perhaps ... Perhaps the rat is what you have been waiting for," Harvest Moon's voice is thoughtful as the elf, Andrath Silvermoon, attempts to release it into the back alley. (Knowledge Arcane 14) "It has taken one of your gems." (Spot from yesterday)

"Good morning," Harvest Moon turns to their host. "Breakfast smells wonderful. Thank you," she replies to Lincoln's offer. When the Breakfast Pie arrives, she seats herself. Eating with small bites, Harvest chews her food slowly, savoring each mouthful to it's fullest extent. "Joe, please," she says.

From behind her dark gray eyes, Harvest Moon watches the Leaguers as they go about their morning. Her scrutiny is plain, undisguised, and largely expressionless, holding but a slight hint of curiosity in the tilt of her head. After finishing her meal, Harvest neatly places both the cup and utensils atop her plate, then walks over to inspect the weaponry leaning against the wall.

Andrath
Wednesday September 15th, 2004 1:24:17 PM

Andrath sits down and absentmindedly orders breakfast. "Some pie and joe, if you please."

He thinks on what young lady has said. "A rat?" he thinks to himself. "That is what came to the things that I laid out in the alley? Well, I guess it is kind of fitting. Rats are city-dwellers, and hide in the shadows, sneaking from place to place. Maybe there is a match, after all." He opens his pack and peers into it one more time, looking for the rodent. He breaks off a small piece of the pie, and holds it in the backpack to see if the rat will eat from his hand. He tries to connect mentally with the rat, to see if that is the source of the strange feelings that he has been having.

Elerinn
Wednesday September 15th, 2004 4:16:45 PM

Elerinn cheerfully greets his companions cheerfully and smiles to the various members of the League. When Hildy arrives, he orders some pie and a cup of tea.

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday September 16th, 2004 12:10:08 AM

Andrath peers into the pocket of his knapsack and tries to commune with the rodent who has taken up residence. Having finished with her breakfast, Harvest Moon drifts over towards the display of equipment.

"Whoah, little lady! You don't want to hurt yourself with that!" A well muscled and heavily mustachioed man in a full suit of scale mail approaches Harvest Moon near the collection of weaponry. Selecting the double axe, he gives it a slow twirl, and says "took this off a nasty old orc during a bit of mercenary work for the Clean Ops out of Dirt City." The man sets the axe back against the wall, and stands between the small brown woman and the weapons.

"Stop showing off, Turmoch!" calls a tall half elf in iridescent blue vest and pantaloons, an embroidered pouch tied to her belt and a wand stuck through it. Her silvery blonde hair is braided in an intricate configuration at the back of her head and she has a red badge over her heart, as does the man she is addressing. "Save your strength for the demonstrations." At this last admonishment, there are guffaws from the table occupied by the officers of the WLA.

Hildy and Lincoln start the cleaning up process, and with much scrapping of chairs and thunking of boots on plank floors, the established adventurers clear out of the inn with their gear. Gaylon catches Bralin's look, and gives him a brief salute. "At the community center 'round noon for the demonstrations and training exercises," he says before disappearing out the door.

Harvest
Thursday September 16th, 2004 12:19:01 PM

Harvest Moon says nothing. Her eyes drift from, first the man armored in scale and lip-lizard as he turns the double axe in a lazy circle of deadly blade, to the striking half-elf, stunning in her finery.

The little brown girl simply steps aside as the Leaguers collect their weaponry. She watches as they make their way out the door.

She returns to Andrath Silvermoon.

"Will you be going to the Open House now?" she asks. "Andrath Silvermoon?"

Bralin
Thursday September 16th, 2004 1:33:12 PM

Bralin grunts a response back to Gaylon. His mouth is full and its not worth the time to empty it.

Elerrin's question is a different matter, and the dwarf relunctantly stops packing in the food to respond.

"I removed this sphere from the Chamber. Tis a cavern of glorious power under my home which sustained me during a time of trial. The sphere links me with the Chamber, opening my mind to recieve the gifts the gods have seen fit to grant me."

With that, Bralin gets back to business.
Fifteen or twenty minutes of solid eating later, the dwarf pushes himself back from the table, belches loudly, and looks around for his companions.

The girl from last night appears to have attached herself to Andrath. No matter. She doesn't look dangerous.

Addressing the thief, he asks, "Have we any business 'ere the meeting at noon?"

If not, Bralin plans to return to his room and continue working on the statuette he started in Jarlwolf.

Elerinn
Thursday September 16th, 2004 6:19:05 PM

Elerinn listens to Bralin's explanation, and is quite interested. He asks his companion: "May I ask you which gods grant you your powers?"

When the dwarf continues with his important breakfast, Elerinn looks at the League's members leaving the inn. He cannot wait to go to the community centre at noon.

Alkali takes his breakfast slow and waits for the others to pack. Somewhat excited about going to the centre, he no longer looks lost in thought.

Andrath
Thursday September 16th, 2004 10:47:40 PM

Andrath sits up from trying to feed the rat in his pack, and answers Harvest Moon, "It looks like I will have time to attend the League display after all. And, by the way, my name is Silverhand, not Silvermoon. So, do you know anything about familiars? I have a feeling that what you said is true: This is the creature that was meant to come to me last night. I have been getting odd feelings since it showed up, feelings that don't seem to originate in my mind but appear on their own as if from outside. Is that what a familiar does?"

After talking with the young lady, Andrath looks over at Bralin and says, "Cadmar was keeping track of what we needed to do in Magpie Crossing, but let me think. One, talk to the Brightsongs, two, talk to Samuel, and three, deliver the letter and money to the family of the half-elf bodies that we found. So, I don't think that we have anything left to take care of. I do want to talk to Lincoln before we leave, however. If you want, I can come and get you in your room when we are all ready to leave."

After breakfast is over, he goes over to the bar, and asks Lincoln, "So, what is with this curfew? I only remember there being a curfew once before here in the Crossing, when that group of werewolves was thought to have been operating in town. Luckily, it turned out to be a bunch of teenagers whose prank had been carried too far, remember? Anyway, last night I was resting outside the back of the inn, and I was rousted by the new local guard. Some lieutenant threatened to throw me in jail if he caught me outside after dark again. That seems like an over-reaction to me. And who is this 'lieutenant', anyway?"

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday September 16th, 2004 11:42:17 PM

The party members finish their morning repast and discuss their plans for the day. With no immediate errands to run prior to the open house, many make their way back to their rooms. Andrath feels a wash of relaxed contentment wash over his mind and discovers the rat curled in a small grey ball in the bottom of the pocket of his packsack. It appears to be asleep. Having arranged to meet Harvest Moon later in the day, the rogue enjoins Lincoln Horncroft in conversation.

"Oh, the curfew, "Lincoln replies, "it's not all that bad. It's set well after closing to allow folks to get home. Had a spot of trouble with smugglers and break-ins. Brightsong Trading took the brunt of it along with the jewellers. Drove Ol Gus right out of business it did. The new lady Maya seems nice enough. Keeps a clean shop, well stocked. The Reeve called for the curfew shortly after. Lieutenant Orrin can be a bit prickly about it. Seems to take personal interest in keeping folk in at night, he does. Always checking on folks, slipping in and out of the alleys, turning up like a bad card wherever he's least expected. Caerthon claims it's more of the old troubles but he hasn't been the same since the wars" Lincolns taps his forefinger to his temple in the universal sign of mental feebleness. The halfling's speculation is interrupted by Hildy's summons and he is sent off on a series of errands.

The party gathers just prior to noon and readies to leave for the open house. Andrath knocks on the door beneath the stairwell to see if Harvest is ready.

Harvest Moon blushes a bright scarlet.

"I am sorry, Andrath ... Silverhand. I, I, I meant no offense. I ... "

"I have ... I have ... read that a familiar may share emotions and sensations with their master. It is not something that I can imagine, yet I have read that it is so. I understand, that they may even share speech someday ... "

"It seemed ... a very nice rat, Andrath Silverhand."

"I ... I am sorry that I mistook your name."

Later, Harvest answers the knock at the door of her cupboard under the stairs. The little brown girl bows to the people with Andrath Silverhand. These must surely be the "companions" that he has mentioned.

"Hello. My name is Harvest Moon." Her introduction is simple. Though her gray eyes follow each with interest, there is not much else to say.

Tagging along behind, Harvest accompanies them to the meeting.

Bralin  d20+12=23
Friday September 17th, 2004 2:29:49 PM

Between bites, Bralin explains to Elerinn, "I revere all the Woldian gods equally, for they all have their place."

Finishing up, he goes to his room and spends the morning carefully chipping away at his statuette. The green statuette obviously depicts three forms engaged in some type of combat, but the detail is still missing.
[Voluntary DC 18. Craft Check 23. Dividing by two for the half day's work = 207 cp completed.
Total is now 945cp of 1500cp complete.]

At the proper hour, the dwarf carefully packs his gear and heads downstairs. He greets the newest member of the group with a curt "Bralin Stoneminder", and then heads to the meeting house to see about the WLA.

Elerinn
Friday September 17th, 2004 5:24:58 PM

Elerinn thanks Bralin for his explanation, and wonders if the dwarf worships both the Gods of the Wold and the Gods of Testing.

He smiles at Harvest and says: "Hello, Harvest! My name is Elerinn Brazael and this is Qamaro. Say 'hello' to Miss Moon here, Qamaro."
The red-haired gnome, who is dressed in a psychedelic diamond-patterned cloak, points to the raven that is currently sitting on his shoulder. The bird greets the girl, in a feral but intelligible voice. "Like Andrath's rat, he is what most people refer to as a familiar.", Elerinn explains.

Adressing Andrath, the sorcerer asks: "Do you have a name for the animal, yet?" Then, he follows the group to the place where the League's demonstration will take place.

Andrath
Saturday September 18th, 2004 12:44:44 AM

Andrath smiles, trying to put the young lady at ease. "No worries, Harvest Moon. I have been called Silvermoon, Silverstar, Silverleaf, and Silvercoin, among other names. Why don't you just call me Andrath?"

He thanks Lincoln for the advice and room and meals, saying, "I expect that you will see us again later, after all the festivities. Please hold our rooms for us."

He heads for the door, exiting the Inn and heading for the open house and competitions. He is a little unsure about the level of competition, after watching that fighter fling the double-axe around like a baton.

On the way, the elf answers Elerinn, "You know, I haven't given a name much thought. I figured that the name would come to me when the creature is ready to let me know."

Andrath leads the way to the community centre. It is a utilitarian building located next to a temple dedicated to Domi, on one of the roads leading out of town and towards Strongwind Castle.

Although it is just past noon, a crowd is assembled on the grounds surrounding the building watching various members of the WLA demonstrating their skills. Turmoch is there, in mock combat with a tall grey-haired fellow in studded leather. The fighter wields a bastard sword, while his opponent, a ranger by his appearance, swings a long sword, a short sword in his off hand. A dwarven cleric in coarse grey robes stands nearby a wand tucked in his belt and a leather bag bulging with potions slung over one shoulder. Cheers erupt when a halfling on a riding dog makes a show of catching an apple suspending by a string on her long spear.

Inside the centre there is an intriguing display of weapons and equipment, as well as several booths devoted to explaining the specific benefits of belonging to the league. The half-elven woman with the coiled hair is at one booth with a gnome. Books and maps cover the table, representing information and knowledge gathered by the organization and the gnome gestures animatedly as he speaks to the local youths clustered about the booth. Another booth features lists of secure lodgings which offer reduced rates to members, and associated clerics available for healing, restorations, and such at reduced rates. A man in old-fashioned armor leans forward, deep in discussion with a stocky white haired woman in white robes staffing that booth. (Spot=12) Anyone who is observant Highlight to display spoiler: { will recognize the man as the solitary diner who took such great interest in Lorth back at the Shadfly Inn.}

Gaylon is there too, deep in conversation with a very attractive half-elf. Shorter and curvier than most elves, her ancestry is evident by her exotic facial features. Garbed in robes of blue and green, she carries herself proudly. A large and very ornate necklace affixed to a collar of purple velvet hangs round her neck. The half-elf spares a glance for the newcomers entering the hall.

Monday September 20th, 2004 11:06:21 AM

[Spot 16]

Bralin stands outside the centre for a moment, evaluating the combat skills of Turmoch and the ranger.

Moving on, he stops a moment to listen to the cleric, as both his race and profession strike a chord.

Bralin enters the building, nods to Gaylon, and pauses in recognition of the man in the back of the Shadfly. But the dwarf just isn't that interested in the man. He listens to the gnome explain the benefits for a while.

Waiting for the diminutive person to take a breath, Bralin interjects with typical non-sublety, "How much?"

Harvest  d20+9=23
Monday September 20th, 2004 1:12:14 PM

The weapons are there again, and Harvest continues her examination. A tiny vertical crease between her brows is her only reaction.

The maps hold the little brown girl's interest. But the information, the books, the written information in particular, only serves to deepen the crease between her brows. Lodging and healing. So many things. And so many people. There is a man from the Inn last night, arrived to scrutinize the League just as they have. (Spot 23)

Harvest purses her lips, and wrinkles her nose at decisions. Finally, she asks the gnome the same question she had put forth the night before. Her voice, as she speaks comes in unison with that of the dwarf in the group, Bralin Stoneminder.

"Why do you train only in weapons with blades or points?"

Elerinn
Monday September 20th, 2004 2:33:21 PM

When Elerinn enters community centre, he observes the various demonstrations and various booths with much interest. He walks over to the stall where the gnomish man is talking to the local youth with much enthousiasm. Elerinn waits to hear what the man has to say about the League.

When Bralin interrupts the man with his direct question, Elerinn looks at him and can't surpress a mischievous smile. He is slowly beginning to understand the dwarf a bit better and appreciate his pragmatic style. Elerinn silently awaits the man's answer.

Alkali
Monday September 20th, 2004 10:40:37 PM

Wandering around Alkali stops at booths hearing a small tad at each booth. Not particularly interested in anything, he walks over to Bralin, watching him talk to the gnome.

Andrath  d20+17=20
Monday September 20th, 2004 11:22:09 PM

Andrath wanders around the open house, taking in the various sights. [OOC: Spot roll of 20.] He notices the customer from the Inn last night that had been staring so intently at Lorth, and approaches the paladin, to say, "Lorth, wasn't that man dressed in the fighter garb from the Inn last night? I think that he was really looking you over in the common room. Maybe you might want to approach him and ask him what his interest in you might be?"

He watches the fighting display between the two swordsmen, and afterwards, approaches the ranger, to say, "Good day; my name is Andrath Silverhand. I have recently taken up the long and short sword style of fighting. Would you have any pointers?"

DM Bob & Carla
Monday September 20th, 2004 11:58:35 PM

"How much he asks? How much indeed!" the gnome bursts out in laughter. "I knew our friends from under the mountains were averse to small talk. Neb!" the gnome cries out, "get over here, this one has fewer words than even you". While the gnome waits for 'Neb' to arrive, he explains the membership fee structure to Bralin. "Initiates like yourself are expected to contribute 2000 gp each to the league. Further advancement to 'journeyman' will require an additional 5000 gp."

The 'chink' of armor under a coarse robe announces the arrival of Neb the dwarf. "Joining?" he grunts at Bralin.

The female half-elf answers Harvest Moon for the gnome, "Not all of our members restrict their training to blades. Neb here tends to favor blunt weapons like the hammer or mace. A few even use their bare hands but they are uncommon and fewer have risen in the ranks. I myself prefer the arcane and rarely use weapons at all. Our founder, Lars Tokasis favored the bastard sword and long spear and many of our members do try to follow that tradition."

The lone man from the Shadfly grows more animated in his discussions with the white haired cleric staffing the booth against the far wall. He stabs at a map on the wall with his finger and draws a circle with his digit across the upper right quarter of the map. Although the party cannot hear the conversation, it is clear that the cleric is doing her best to placate the man, who suddenly turns and storms past the group and out of the hall. The tall, well muscled man in his late 50's sports short cropped grey-white hair and beard. His dark eyes blaze with intensity. He mutters something about adventurers being 'bloody useless' as he strides out the door and down the path to the roadway.

The ranger parries a blow from Tormoch and turns his gaze to answer Andrath. "Corrin" he rasps, "Corrin Negorum". A second blow from Tormoch clips the man across his helm and refocuses his attention. "The first and most important thing", he calls back over his shoulder as he presses forward with a series of short rapid slashes, "is to keep your eye on the bugger!"

Lorth
Tuesday September 21st, 2004 8:45:52 AM

Lorth follows the man from the shadfly inn out of the hall. If he catches up to the man he says, "Excuse me sir. My friends could not help but notice your interest in me last eve at the Shadfly inn. Was there something you would like to discuss?"

Harvest
Tuesday September 21st, 2004 8:50:49 AM

Harvest Moon stands blinking as the beautiful half-elf speaks on the weapons tradition of the Woldian League of Adventurers. She lifts her eyes to the half-elven face, and then lowers them in thought.

The small brown girl's eyes flick momentarily to the man from the inn. Then her attention returns.

"Might I receive training in this?" she asks. And a sibilant roll of metal sounds as an oiled length of spiked chain tumbles from her pack into Harvest Moon's hand.

OoC: This, btw, is a serious question. Might I substitute the Spiked Chain for the standard list of Bastard Sword, Longspear, or Shortsword?

Bralin
Tuesday September 21st, 2004 9:30:00 AM

Bralin thinks on "Neb's" question.
What manner of name is 'Neb'? he wonders.

"Aye" he responds to the dwarf. He pulls out a dagger. "Is this acceptable, or do ye require coin?"

Elerinn
Tuesday September 21st, 2004 4:53:40 PM

Elerinn listens to the gnome, and is somewhat dissapointed by the large amount of gold pieces required to join the League. "Hmmm", he says, "I miss a couple of hundred gold pieces to join your organization. But I can join whenever I manage to get some more, can't I?"

Andrath
Tuesday September 21st, 2004 9:10:03 PM

[OOC: DM's, if you read my post, you will see the term 'afterwards', which I meant to mean 'after the fight was over'. I will try to be clearer next time. :) ]

Andrath waits until after the demonstration fight is over, then approaches the ranger. "I am very sorry, I didn't mean to distract you. I guess I thought that the demonstration was over. Please, let me buy you a drink tonight at the Shadfly Inn."

Then he walks over to Bralin, and asks, "So, does this seem interesting enough to you to join up? I have a little coin to spot you, if you are short. Have you found out what an Initiate has access to?"

DM Bob & Carla
Tuesday September 21st, 2004 11:11:08 PM

Neb accepts the dagger from Bralin and examines it carefully, turning the blade over in his hands, feeling its weight, and examining its edge. Spinning, he hurls the dagger at a small saucer-sized target propped up against the wall. The dagger strikes the target dead-center and buries it's nose into the bulls-eye. The dwarf retrieves the dagger, "Aye, this will more than do, and depending on your small friend's financial circumstances, the blade might also contribute towards his membership" Neb looks to Elerinn to see if his interest in the WLA is real. "What say you gnome?"[OOC up to 300 gp. of an additional membership can be purchased with the dagger]. Neb keeps the dagger and invites Bralin and Elerinn (if he chooses) to meet up with him at the Shadfly later in the evening to finalize their induction(s).

The female half-elf looks at the spiked chain that falls from Harvest's hands with curiosity and shakes her head. "None of us have trained with such a device," she tells Harvest Moon. It is clear from the way she examines the chain that she is unsure of just which end she should pick it up by. "Would you not rather be trained in the use of a long spear? You could keep your enemies at bay from a distance...or perhaps the short sword for it certainly fits your physique?" [OOC unfortunately I see little room for substituting weapon proficiencies given the narrow range of weapons listed]

Corrin grasps Andrath by the shoulder and laughs. "My own fault" he says "let your focus stray but for an instant in battle and you may find yourself holding your own liver in your hand" The WLA member sheathes his short sword and straightens his tunic. "The key to fighting with two swords is to turn your opponent's weapon to the outside while you bring your second weapon to bear. In this manner you can either strike from a distance with your long sword...or roll inside his sword arm and stab with your short sword." The fighter demonstrates by rolling into Andrath's midsection and bringing his fist up against the elf's side in a stabbing motion. "It works with a dagger as well" he smiles before stepping back. "As for that drink, I'd be glad to share a pitcher of ale tonight."

Outside the hall, Lorth catches up to the man from the Shadfly Inn. He is dressed in breastplate from a different era, functional but no longer in fashion. He wears a pewter holy symbol around his neck, and a long sword hangs from his waist. His eyes widen at the site of Lorth and he stammers, "By all that is holy, I saw you fall Kalith". He rubs his eyes with the heels of his hands and looks again. "How can this be? Kalith Jerodasta fell at the Crimson Fort and yet here you stand before me. Do you not recognize me? It is me, Caerthon, I was your Captain." Caerthon reaches out to touch Lorth as if to make sure he is real and not some figment of his imagination.

Harvest
Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 12:21:24 AM

The end of the chain swings in growing arcs of the pendulum. The swinging end becomes a spinning disk, it's center at Harvest's small pale hand.

"This will keep enemies at bay as well," she says in an even, almost detached, voice.

Harvest Moon steps backward a few paces for room, and the spinning metal disk grows in size as more chain slips through her fingers. The disk turns, tipping to a 45 degree angle over the small girl's crest of brown hair. At this point, the disk is nearly eight feet at the radius. Then, with a cross handed motion, she turns the disk into a butterfly pattern alternating the flying chain from one side of her body to another. The disk returns. It shrinks in size, then slows, and stops.

"But ... that is only a trick. Perhaps a weapons master could help me turn it into a real weapon." Harvest glances back at he display of weapons nearby. "That's ok. Thank you anyway."

Harvest turns and searches the crowd for Andrath, or the gnome, Elerrin.

Bralin
Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 9:38:36 AM

The dwarf nods to Neb in acceptance of his offer, and waits to see what Elerinn decides.

To Andrath, he replies, "I am joining."

Bralin waits patiently for the others to finish their business, and then returns to the Shadfly Inn. His fingers itch to get back to his statue.

Lorth
Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 11:03:21 AM

Lorth rocks back on his heels for a moment then stammers, "Kalith was my father, I am his son Lorth. Please join me good sir at the shadfly inn, I beg of you to tell me of my father." A tear in his eye. "I have been looking for information of my father's death for some time now. I wish to give him a proper burial in Gargul's name." He waits to see if Caerthon will accompany him.

Andrath
Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 6:42:49 PM

Andrath answers the ranger, "Good! We'll meet tonight after supper, and compare some adventuring notes."

When the overly-vocal Bralin says that he is joining, Andrath answers, "Good."

Then he makes his way over to the table with the maps and books. He nods to the half-elf and the gnome, and says, "We were recently in the Culverwood, in a strange place called the Wyrmsfut. Do you have it on your maps? I might be able to help you map it out a bit, if you want, though I am no cartogaff... cratorgra... cargator... Well anyways, I am no mapmaker."

Once the displays are over, the elf makes his way back to the Inn. He goes up to his room, and lets the rat out of his backpack. He says, "So, what should I call you? Do you already have a name?" As he waits for the response (not being really sure if the creature will talk to him or not), he digs out a few of the remaining treats that he so hastily pushed into his backpack last night, and offers them to the little grey-furred rodent.
