Conner readies his shield and Mira steps back and begins mentally rehearsing her spells. Evan reaches the gate (which is about 5 feet tall) and begins pulling it closed. Birdie's barking alerts Kadaz.
With a snarl, Avandri pulls out a dagger and lunges at her cousin. The blade strikes and draws blood. Unarmed, Sarla can only step back, holding up her hands defensively. "Avandri, don't!" she pleads.
"No!" cries Jarvis at the same time. Drawing his rapier he steps between the two cousins.
"Miss Avandri!" Shocked, Josef steps up and tries to catch Avandri by the arm, but she rounds on him and the dagger flashes again. Josef lets out a grunt of pain and a bloodstain begins spreading over his jerkin.
One of Avandri's hirelings, a human man armed with a two-bladed sword, comes through the gate where Conner waits with his sword. The tattooed fighter lands a solid blow, and the man stops in his tracks. His return strike misses badly.
Another hireling, this one a half-orc woman, rushes up to aid her companion, striking at Conner with her warhammer. Her blow is better than the sword-weilder's, but still not good enough.
Meanwhile, the half-elf man comes up to the gate and catches hold of it, trying to pull it open even as Evan pulls from the other side. [Opposed Strength check 16] As he approaches, Uriel lands a terrific blow.
The other human man seems content to stay outside the gate for now, merely shifting a bit before firing a crossbow at Arm. [Hit AC 17 for 7 points plus 5 points sneak-attack damage].
In the confusion, Shadow and Devryn melt away.
Wilfire Ironhouse Wednesday September 1st, 2004 4:04:58 AM
Wilfire hears the sound of battle, and the red haired dwarf turns around and does a quick scan of the area. "Avandri is going down he thinks to himself" as he raises a single hand in the direction of the woman and says one simple word:
"Approach"
OOC: Wilfire is looking to get her to take some AOO's on this one, since she's got to walk past a lot of people to get to me. Will save DC 14
Evan (ac 16, hp 12) d20+3=17 d20+5=22 Wednesday September 1st, 2004 5:42:22 AM
Evan tugs sharply on the gate, causing the half-elf to lean forward (str check 17) but as the half-elf leans forward and Uriel strikes at him, Evan reverses the gate smashing it back at the half-elf. (to hit with the gate-22, not sure what the damage would be but its at +3) Evan tries to use his momentum to slip past Uriel to continue the attack against the half-elf, drawing his longsword as he does so.
Arm Wednesday September 1st, 2004 5:58:16 AM
The fateful shot from the crossbow causes Arm to lurch forward and land at the feet of the treacherous Avandri where, barely conscious, he can do nothing but watch the lifeblood seep from him. (current hp= -4)
Kadaz Wednesday September 1st, 2004 9:19:54 AM
From his position behind the wall Kadaz can't see too much of what is going on. But he does notice Arm bleeding on the ground from a severe arrow wound. Kadaz runs to Arm and pulls him back next to the wall. Kadaz pulls out his last cure light wounds potion and forces it into Arm's mouth.
Birdie is jumping up and down and growling. He knows the smell of blood and is eager to bite someone. But who? He snarls at the unconscious Arm and then looks up to Kadaz for orders.
Conner [AC=20, HP 20] d20+5=23 d20+3=17 d8+3=9 d6+3=5 Wednesday September 1st, 2004 4:42:56 PM
Enlivened by the action around him, Conner presses home his attack on the man with the two-edged sword. He slashes down hard with his longsword [Hit AC 23, 9 dmg] and feels his blade strikes true. Without hesitation he whirls onto the half-orc and with a sweeping backhand motion thrusts his spiked shield towards her midsection [Hit AC 17, 5 dmg].
Mira (AC13, 16 HP) d4+1=5 Wednesday September 1st, 2004 6:59:57 PM
Furious at having been played by Avendri, Mira raises a hand in the direction of the woman, shouting templa pilini. At such close range, the missile of magical energy does maximum damage to the sorcerer's enemy.
"Jarvis! Protect Lady Saarla!" she yells.

DM Kathy d20+2=22 d20+4=14 d4=1 d20+5=17 d20+5=18 Thursday September 2nd, 2004 12:43:45 AM
Wilfire speaks a command to Avandri, who totally ignores it [natural 20 on the will save].
Evan pulls on the gate, then craftily pushes on it, bashing the half-elf in the face and sending him tumbling to the ground. He allows his forward momentum to carry him through and draws his sword.
Arm drops to the ground, but Kadaz pulls him to safety and pulls out a potion (those were both move-equivalent actions, and feeding Arm the potion is a full-round action, so it will need to wait until next round).
Conner strikes out and hits both his foes, and now the sword-weilding human is starting to look the worse for wear.
Mira unleases a Magic Missile at Avandri, who shrieks in pained rage. She tells Jarvis to protect Sarla, which--to his credit--it appears that Jarvis is trying to do. He seems a bit reluctant to actually spill blood, though.
Uriel attacks the human (since the half-elf is already down) and drops him.
Avandri slashes at Jarvis with her dagger, and manages to wound him slightly. Jarvis, apparantly still reluctant to actually attack Avandri, gives ground, pushing Sarla farther back.
Josef also steps away from Avandri, clutching at his wounded shoulder.
The half-orc woman steps through the gate, standing now to Conner's left. She swings her warhammer, and it clangs off his armor without doing any damage.
The other human moves up so he is standing over his fallen companion, drawing a rapier as he goes (Conner is flanked). He stabs at Conner, but also fails to penetrate the fighter's armor.
Wilfire Ironhouse d8=4 Thursday September 2nd, 2004 4:24:59 AM
Wilfire shakes off his frustration of his spell failure when he notices the downed Arm.
Placing his hands on the wounds of Arm he says a short prayer- Apugetda... he mumbles softly as divine energy flows through his fingertips into the downed Arm.
OOC- If Kadaz is worse for wear than Arm he'll cast it on him instead (since he should be right there, since he's feeding the potion to Arm).
OOC2- Burning summon Monster 1 for a Cure Light Wounds. Heals 4+1=5
Evan (ac 16, hp 12) d20+5=23 d20+6=22 d8+3=9 d6+3=6 Thursday September 2nd, 2004 5:51:36 AM
Evan presses forward, flanking the human attacking Conner, allowing Conner a chance to concentrate on the half-orc. He strikes out with the long sword as well as the throwing axe, connecting with both. (sword hits ac23, dam-9, axe hits ac 22, dam-6)
Arm Thursday September 2nd, 2004 5:52:54 AM
Thanks to Wilfire's ministrations, Arm's bleeding has been staunched. Still very weak, he smiles somewhat as Kadaz begins to offer him the potion (current hp=1).
Kadaz Thursday September 2nd, 2004 6:46:57 AM
Kadaz looks up as Wilfire moves next to Arm and nods at the cleric as he starts a healing spell. Kadaz follows through his initial intentions and offers the potion to the now conscious Arm. (heal 7 HP).
Uriel {AC:17 HP:21} Pressing On d20+5=18 d8+3=5 Thursday September 2nd, 2004 7:52:39 PM
Uriel steps past the fallen enemy and attacks the human with the rapier. {AC:18 DMG:5}
"Your friends have fallen. It is time to give up!" Uriel says to the remaining attackers.
Conner [AC=20, HP 20] d20+3=21 d20+5=19 d6+3=8 d8+3=4 Thursday September 2nd, 2004 8:03:42 PM
Conner hears the sounds of the human behind him as he struggles to fend of Evan. Confident that his flank is covered, the tattooed fighter focuses his attention on the female half-orc. With surprising speed he slams forward and upwards with his shield [Hit AC=21 8 HP]. Hoping to knock his opponent off balance and expose her to the point of his longsword he stabs beneath his sheild towards the midsection of the half-orc [Hit AC=19 4 HP].
"Yield now!" he calls out. "You cannot hope to win." Conner's tattoo burns deep crimson across his temple as the fire for battle burn's fiercely within him.
Mira (AC13, 16 HP) d4+1=4 Thursday September 2nd, 2004 8:26:24 PM
Mira takes a single (5') step away from Avandri and once again casts her spell. A single ball of energy shoots forth from her hand and strikes Avandri in the chest [magic missile 4 hp]
DM Kathy d20+4=20 d4=1 Friday September 3rd, 2004 12:42:32 AM
Wilfire is able to restore a few hit points to Arm, who is then able to sit up and drink the healing potion.
Evan lands two solid blows on the human man, and then Uriel finishes him off. Connor hits the half-orc with both sword and shield, and she is beginning to look the worse for wear.
[OOC: you guys making two-handed attacks are taking appropriate penalties, right?]
Avandri whirls on Conner. "You stupid--adventurers!" she shrieks. "This is all your fault!" Somehow, her little dagger finds its way through Conner's armor and he takes a point of damage.
Jarvis, looking pale, remains protectively in front of Sarla. "I say, are-are you badly hurt?" he calls back to her. Most of his attention is still on Avandri, in front of him, but he still doesn't move to attack.
Josef slumps against the side of the gatehouse, also pale, but for different reasons.
The half-orc retreats a step, looking uncertain. She does not attack, but she doesn't throw down her weapons, either.
Wilfire Ironhouse d20=4 d8=3 Friday September 3rd, 2004 1:57:54 AM
Wilfire charges directly at Avandri, and attempts to hammer her with his flail (Hits AC 12, damage 9).
OOc- If I can't charge because of the person in the way, he will yell out for "B" to move out of the way first.
Kadaz (AC 20, HP 21) d20+5=12 d20+5=12 Friday September 3rd, 2004 6:11:51 AM
His friend taken care of, it's time for Kadaz to get into this fight. The frustration of the past few days, and the anger of being fooled by Avandri boils as Kadaz approaches the cluster of enemies at the gate. Evan, Conner and Uriel are holding the gate so that leaves just two enemies inside and Avandri is straight ahead! Kadaz runs at the conniving woman and tries to grab her. (melee touch attack 12, opposed grapple check 12).
Evan (ac 16, hp 12) d20+3=16 d20+4=13 d8+3=9 d6+3=9 Friday September 3rd, 2004 7:06:51 AM
(of course, which is why I flanked :)
Evan moves forward next to the gate to help Conner pin the half-orc against the wall. As the half-orc seems to be displaying doubt about her current situation, Evan will hold his attack, giving the woman a chance to surrender. Should the half-orc press an attack, Evan will strike with longsword and throwing axe. (sword hits ac 16, dam-9; axe hits ac 13, dam 9)
Conner [AC=20, HP 19/20] d20+3=13 d20+3=22 d20+3=23 d8+3=9 d8+3=5 Friday September 3rd, 2004 7:37:29 AM
The half-orc at bay, Conner quickly scans his surroundings [Spot=13] to see who might need assistance. "Where are those two new guys?" he shouts, when he feels the point of a dagger slice into him. Enraged at the audacity of Avandri, the brawny fighter clubs the woman with the hilt of his longsword, bringing it straight down on her head [Hit AC = 22&23 critical confirmed, 14 hp non-lethal]. His improvised club makes solid contact with Avandri's skull and immediately Conner begins to worry that he may have over done it.
[OOC Included -4 on attack for trying to cause non-lethal damage - previous posts included -2 for two-weapon fighting]
Arm Friday September 3rd, 2004 8:10:32 AM
Fully refreshed, Arm notices the half-orc, regains his feet and draws his sword, and advances on the beast, prepared to rid the Wold of yet another of these foul creatures.
Shadow Friday September 3rd, 2004 11:24:43 AM
OOC: I am back, and will post privately to you Kathy.
Uriel Saturday September 4th, 2004 12:01:47 AM
Uriel says to the half-orc, "Drop your weapon lass and this won't end badly for you." He moves in closer, knowing Arm's feelings for orcs and tries to speak loudly enough for Arm to hear.
Mira Sunday September 5th, 2004 7:26:03 PM
Mira looks about, and catches Conner'sattempt on Avendri. The sorcerer winces at the force of the blow. The man doesn't know his own strength! she thinks.
Mira decides to hold any further attacks, since most of the thugs in the employ of her former patron appear subdued.
"How are you doing Lady Sarla? Jarvis?" Mira is a little worried about the gatekeeper.
DM Kathy Monday September 6th, 2004 1:51:28 AM
Wilfire tries to charge Avandri, but Birdie, excited by the confusion and not knowing Wilfire too well, doesn't move out of the way in time. Wilfire triest to press his attack anyway, but misses.
Kadaz tries to grab the duplicitous Avandri, but she dodges out of the way.
Conner has better luck, fetching her a massive blow with the hilt of his sword. She sways, but does not go down.
Meanwhile, Evan keeps his weapons trained on the half-orc, and Uriel calls for her to surrender, even as Arm recovers and approaches.
"I'll be all right. I think," Sarla assures Mira.
Jarvis, still pale, attempts to be dashing and heroic. "Having a smashing time!" he calls with a brittle, false gaity. To his credit, he remains between Sarla and the battle, still shielding her from danger.
Josef is still conscious, but his wound looks nasty.
The half-orc, seeing what she's up against, drops her weapons.
"Coward!" shrieks Avandri at the half-orc. Then, "Thieves!" she shouts at all of you. "Blackguards and thieves! This estate is rightfully mine!" She is still holding the knife--waving it about, in fact--but she does not attack.
Meanwhile, Shadow and Devryn have reached the manor house and are circling around, trying to find a likely-looking window to get in.
"I've searched about half the first floor," Devryn says, "but I haven't found anything. It's likely in the old man's office or study, but I haven't found the room yet."
Kadaz (AC 20 HP 21) d20+5=21 d20+5=15 Monday September 6th, 2004 7:39:46 AM
Kadaz again tries to grab Avandri and hoist her off the ground. If she can be neutralized this fight would be over. (melee touch attack 21, opposed grappel check 15). "It's over Avandri" yells Kadaz in her ear. "Your hirelings have given up."
Mira (AC13, 16 HP) d8+1=4 Monday September 6th, 2004 8:33:29 AM
Moving past Jarvis towards the gatekeeper, Mira whispers, "keep up the good work," to the ineffectual fop who appears to be doing his best to protect his lady fair. Arriving at her destination, Mira withdraws a small vial from a pouch and holds it out to the wounded man. "Drink this*, it will make you feel better," she advises Josef, adding "let me know if you need another."
*CLW=4 points restored
Wilfire Ironhouse d20=19 d20=7 Monday September 6th, 2004 9:40:30 AM
Wilfire will wait to see how Kadaz does with his grab. If he pulls her into a grapple, he will join the grapple (grapple check roll 19). If Kadaz fails to pull her into the grab, he will drop his shield and then go for a disarm with his flail (OOC- Holding the flail in two hands). (attack roll 7+4+4=16. I think she's fighting with a dagger, so she takes a -4 penalty on her opposed attack, although she does get an AOO).
Arm Monday September 6th, 2004 11:50:46 AM
Hearing Uriel's words, but not caring if it is female or male, Arm advances menacingly upon the half-orc, fully intending to decorate the tip of his sword with her severed head.
Uriel Monday September 6th, 2004 2:57:29 PM
Uriel sheathes his weapon and interposes himself between Arm and the Half-Orc.
"My friend, if you plan on slaughtering defenseless people, you will have to start with me," Uriel looks directly at Arm, hands out and arms wide displaying no weapons.
Conner [AC=20, HP 19/20] d20-2=3 d20+3=15 d8+3=5 Monday September 6th, 2004 4:46:45 PM
"I think you should drop that now" Conner tries to calm Avandri "before things get much worse." [Diplomacy=3]. If the woman tries to stab either Conner or anyone else he will club her once again with the hilt of his longsword [Hit AC=15 5 dmg]. If she drops the dagger he will kick it out of her reach and hold her at bay with his longsword.
"Has anyone seen those two new guys?" he will call out again.
Shadow Monday September 6th, 2004 7:37:59 PM
"Be quiet." Shadow states in a quiet voice (above a whisper, because whispers travel, but low enough that only Devryn should hear.).
He will continue to search the ground floor exterior to find a suitable entrance. Once found he will enter first and then have Devryn join him. Once inside he will take Devryn's advice about which areas he has searched already.
DM Kathy d20-1=2 Tuesday September 7th, 2004 2:49:49 AM
Kadaz and Wilfire are easily able to subdue Avandri, who screams insults but can do little else.
Josef nods his thanks to Mira. "I'll be all right, lass."
Conner asks after the new guys--where have they gone exactly?
Arm advances on the half-orc, but Uriel interposes himself between the irate bard and his prey. Behind Uriel, the woman shifts uneasily. Now weaponless, she can only hope that Arm sees reason soon.
Shadow and Devryn find a likely-looking window and scramble through. They find themselves in a hallway.
"I've looked in there," Deveryn whispers, pointing at a door on their left, "but nothing on this side of the hall," gesturing with his right hand.
Sarla, looking pale but otherwise all right, steps out from behind Jarvis. "I thank you for your intervention," she says shakily. "All of you," she adds, laying a hand on Jarvis's arm. "If you had not been here, I don't know what might have happened."
Kadaz d20+1=17 Tuesday September 7th, 2004 6:11:54 AM
Kadaz keeps hold of Avandri but addresses Sarla. "Miss, I'm very sorry this one was able to fool us and for the trouble we caused you. I am glad she showed her true colors and that were able to help you."
Kadaz looks at the hirelings closely. Are any survivors of the encounter in Plateau City? (spot roll 17)
Arm d20+1=19 Tuesday September 7th, 2004 6:19:52 AM
Arm turns his anger towards Uriel and growls, "You have NO RIGHT to mention "defenseless people" where these vile creatures are concerned! NO ONE, including YOU, gives thought to all the defenseless people of my village that were mercilessly slaughtered by these beasts...the women, children...my....family...., ALL GONE at the hands of filth such as this! I do not wish to fight you, but neither shall I allow ANY of their kind to live, ESPECIALLY a "breeder". Stand aside while I finish this.". So saying, he attempts to push Uriel to the side so that he may finish what he started (opposing strength check=19).
Uriel d20+3=7 d20+3=22 Tuesday September 7th, 2004 8:26:50 AM
Uriel looks towards Arm as he rages, without judgement, letting him shout it out.
When Arm comes at him, Uriel is startled and almost gives ground {Str Check:7 burn Hero Point rerolled Str Check:22}, but rights himself. He continues to interpose himself.
Uriel says gently, "This woman did not commit that atrocity. This woman is innocent of that crime. Slaughtering her will only serve to lose yourself. Your family, your village - this was not their way. Nor should it be yours. Let your actions be a testament to their spirit not an excuse to commit atrocities on other innocents."
Shadow d20+2=6 Tuesday September 7th, 2004 10:36:44 AM
"Well let's start with these on the right, then." Shadow states and moves to the first door.
Leaning close to the joint of the door and the wall Shadow listens intently to determine if there is any activity on the other side. (Listen = 6).
If he hears nothing he will try the door to see if it is unlocked. If it is unlocked he will open the door just a crack to determine what is on the other side prepared to quickly but quietly close the door if people are present.
Mira d20+3=7 Tuesday September 7th, 2004 5:34:36 PM
Mira is satisfied with Josef's response. She looks around for Shadow and Devryn, but is distracted by the commotion over the half-orc (Search=7).
The sorcerer slips into position behind Arm but in view of Uriel and signs rapidly to the paladin. Uriel Highlight to display spoiler: {"Let me know if you need me to hit him with a Sleep spell." }
Mira runs through the words she had previously memorized during her study of the scrolls, hoping she doesn't have to cast against one of her own party.
Conner Tuesday September 7th, 2004 9:36:59 PM
"Miss", Conner addresses Sarla with as gentle a voice as he can muster, "I think we should get you inside and look after Joseph and the others. Then maybe you can explain all of this to the rest of us." If Sarla is willing, Conner will guide her back to the main house and give Joseph a supporting arm as well.
Wilfire Ironhouse Tuesday September 7th, 2004 9:53:52 PM
Wilfire keeps a fimr grip of the lady as he attempts to disarm her of all of her weapons.
Once she is secured he will begin looking around at anyone (enemies included) with serious injuries.
OOC- I'm not sure if there is anyone that is unconcious (enemies included). If so, he will use a 0-level healing to stabilize their wounds.
"I want them alive" he says aloud.
Evan Wednesday September 8th, 2004 12:31:43 AM
Evan moves in to support Uriel, concerned by the bard's temporary madness.
DM Kathy Wednesday September 8th, 2004 2:18:41 AM
Kadaz takes a look at the downed hirelings. He thinks perhaps one of them looks familiar, but it's hard to say.
Between them, he and Conner are able to secure Avandri, and they begin moving toward the manor house to sort the whole thing out, Josef, Jarvis, and Sarla in tow.
Meanwhile, Arm and Uriel continue their standoff over the half-orc prisoner, while Mira and Evan stand anxiously by, hoping the bard will be able to see reason.
Wilfire tends to the fallen enemies, and finds that one of them has already died. He stabilizes the others, though. As for the "good guys," Conner is slightly injured, and Josef still isn't at 100%. Arm may still be hurt, as well, but tending to him is going to be a bit of a challenge at the moment.
Devryn and Shadow try the first door on the right, which proves to be a library. "This looks promising," Devryn whispers.
Evan d20+3=7 Wednesday September 8th, 2004 5:47:31 AM
Seeing that Uriel and Mira have Arm well in hand, he moves to the half-orc and collects her weapons as well as the weapons of those lying on the ground. Once Wilfire has stabilized the hirelings, Evan will secure their wrists behind their backs until a decision can be made as to their disposition. (use rope-7)
(ugh, 3 days without electricity :()
Arm Wednesday September 8th, 2004 6:04:02 AM
Still a bit drained from his near-brush with death, Arm returns his attention to the half-orc and says, "Leave now, hell spawn...run, run fast and far, for the next time we meet, you won't live through it.".
Turning his attention once more to Uriel, he says, "And YOU, friend of the orcs, perhaps you should go and take up residence with them, since you admire them so much.". Spinning on his heel, he very nearly knocks Mira down. Misinterpreting her original intention, he growls at her, "Not now!" and stalks off after the others towards the manor, stabbing the point of his sword into the ground as he goes.
Shadow d20+4=19 Wednesday September 8th, 2004 12:16:21 PM
Shadow will quickly enter the room and allow Devryn to follow. He will then quickly, but quietly shut the door behind the two.
He will start searching the room to see if contains the sphere or anything that might be about it. (Search = 19)
Kadaz Wednesday September 8th, 2004 2:09:16 PM
Kadaz escorts Avandri towards the main house securely holding on to her. Birdie bounces along behind, still looking for someone to bite.
"So, Avandri, were you behind the attack on us in Plateau City? Was it a way to convince us that Miss Saarla was thwarting you?"
Mira Wednesday September 8th, 2004 6:38:23 PM
Passing by Evan, Mira reaches out and gives the ranger a smile and a squeeze on the arm. Her fingers dance nimbly as she sends a message to him. (Evan Highlight to display spoiler: { Forget the gear! We can collect it later. Those sneaky guys are gone. Can you find them?})
Returning to Josef, she asks, "is there a shed or a cellar where we can lock these folks up while we talk?" The sorcerer gestures in the direction of Avendri's accomplices.
Uriel d20+2=16 Wednesday September 8th, 2004 8:34:12 PM
Uriel whistles and says to the others, "That could have gone better." Uriel looks around taking stock of the situation.
Uriel ties the half-orcs hands as well {Use Rope:16} and volunteers to keep watch on the prisoners until they can take them back to the City.
Conner Wednesday September 8th, 2004 8:57:50 PM
Conner raises his eyebrows as Arm storms by towards the manor and turns to give Uriel a reassuring look. Once inside the manor, Conner guides Sarla and Joseph to the first couch or comfortable set of chairs he can find and makes them comfortable.
"I don't mean to be rude, miss" the fighter addresses Sarla, "but my friends and I still have a few questions about you and Avandri and the estate. I'd like to hear the tale from you please."
DM Kathy Thursday September 9th, 2004 2:19:52 AM
Arm abandons his attack on the half-orc with poor grace, but at least he does abandon it.
Evan and Uriel secure the prisoners and help Kadaz walk them back to the house. Avandri sulks and does not answer Kadaz's question.
To Mira, Josef replies, "Aye, lass, we've plenty of cellars and sheds. We can take 'em around back and see what the groundskeeper can turn up for us."
Shadow and Devryn begin searching the library, but find no sign of the orb. There are plenty of interesting-looking books, though.
Back at the manor, Sarla scowls at Conner's question, then sighs. "Oh, very well. Though how it's any of your business--" She cuts herself off and begins. "I don't know how much Avandri told you, but in a nutshell Grandfather was an adventurer who managed to amass a modest fortune. He was guardian to both of us, and we were all very close at one time, I suppose. It seems hard to believe now." She sighs. "Anyway, Avandri began running with a fast crowd and forgetting that Grandfather's fortune was only a modest one. She began spending beyond her means, borrowing on her expectations, getting deeper into debt. Grandfather paid her debts several times, and tried to talk to her about living more reasonably, but she would hear none of it.
"Finally, she managed to borrow against the estate itself, and it was then that both Grandfather and I realized that she'd run this place into the ground if she was allowed. She cared nothing for the land, or the people who rely on it for their livelihood; to her, it was just a means to an end. Grandfather tried one last time to reach her, and when that was unsuccessful, he cut her out of the will. He had no choice" She folds her arms and glares at you. "So. What lies did my cousin tell you to get you to take her part? Or are you simply mercenaries who know neither loyalty nor principle?"
Wilfire Ironhouse Thursday September 9th, 2004 2:50:59 AM
Wilfire keeps a watchful eye on the prisoners as they walk back.
"I am sorry but I will not be able to cast any more healing spells until I get some rest" he says as they lead the prisoners. Let's hope we don't run into any more conflicts for the time being."
Arm Thursday September 9th, 2004 5:51:11 AM
Still brooding, Arm leans against the wall and lets the others answer Sarla's questions.
Kadaz Thursday September 9th, 2004 6:19:33 AM
Kadaz tries to answer Sarla's question. "Avandri told us pretty much the same story except that you were the one who ran with the fast crowd, wasted money and didn't care for the land or people. But in her version you managed to fool your grandfather into trusting you and then forged a will that disinherited Avandri. She convinced us that you had wrongly seized the estate and cast her out. We may be for hire but only for those causes we believe are just."
"Again, I apologize for being taken in by her. But I will point out that we tried very hard to learn the truth before taking action against you."
Shadow d20+2=18 Thursday September 9th, 2004 10:11:11 AM
Knowing that time is limited, Shadow says to Devryn, "It looks like we should move on." With that Shadow will move to the door and peek out into the hallway to make sure noone is present.
IF there is noone in hall, Shadow will move down to the next door on the right side and will listen to see if he can hear anything (listen=18). If there is no sound present he will try and open the door (if unlocked) a crack to peek in.
Evan d20+6=26 Thursday September 9th, 2004 3:07:19 PM
Evan nods and places the collected weapons next to the gatekeeper's house. As it appears they will not be earning any sort of fee for this job, perhaps they can make up some of their losses by selling the captured weapons.
Evan starts to track the two men, easily following their trail despite Arm's tromping all over the tracks but he gets a better idea. He signs to Mira as they walk, Why don't you have Sarla fetch the orb? If that is what the two men are looking for, they will eventually have to join us if the orb is with us.
(tracking-26 nat 20)
Conner d20+3=21 d20+2=8 Thursday September 9th, 2004 6:51:40 PM
Aware that the woman is somewhat defensive about answering questions, Conner listens to her story without further comment. He does keep his eyes and ears open for signs of the Shadow and Devryn who he hasn't seen in some time. [Spot 21, Listen 8]
Uriel Thursday September 9th, 2004 6:59:06 PM
Uriel will maintain a watch on the prisoners. If Josef is still around, he will talk to him.
"What passes for a sheriff on this plateau? Or who can we call to take these people into custody?"
Mira d20+5=13 Thursday September 9th, 2004 7:18:34 PM
Mira gives Evan a thumbs up sign, and signs back you're right.
Clearing her throat she adds her voice to those petitioning the manor's true owner for information. "I do apologize for the many questions, but the secrecy of your ways has in part brought some of these misunderstanding and resultant misfortunes upon you." Mira looks the woman full in the face, "Avendri is not the only one to lay a claim on something you say is yours." The sorcerer lets her words sink in, "there was another we encountered who lays claim to an item of yours. The ownership of the mysterious device reported to control the weather is also contested." Mira's eyes meet Evan's, and then she continues, "can you produce this artefact and documents so that it can be authentithicated?" (Diplomacy=13)
Mira worries that she hasn't been as articulate as she would have wished.
DM Kathy Friday September 10th, 2004 4:13:02 AM
Josef secures the prisoners in an outbuilding so the group is able to join up again. "Lady Sarla can talk to the magistrate and swear out a complaint," Josef tells Uriel. "We can take care of them from here, never you fear."
At the manor, Mira brings up the matter of the Orb. "Oh, that," Sarla says. "I'd forgotten in all the excitement." She frowns, looking about her. "Where did that young fellow get to, anyway?"
She stands. "At any rate, I can show you Grandfather's journals, and the item in question. Come with me." With that, she sets off down one of the hallways.
Shadow and Devryn peer cautiously out of the library and see nobody about. They are just about to venture into the hallway when they hear the sound of voices heading toward them.
Evan Friday September 10th, 2004 5:43:58 AM
Evan gives Mira an encouraging wink, then follows Sarla as she guides them through the manor. After everything that has happened, he has little doubt that the orb does indeed belong to Sarla but as they were the ones that brought the two snakes, Shadow and Devryn into the house, he feels its his responsibility to make sure they are taken back out again.
Arm d20+2=7 Friday September 10th, 2004 5:57:51 AM
Purposely avoiding Uriel, Arm sets off to follow Sarla as well, wondering himself what became of the two newest additions to their group, having serious doubts as well as to the honest nature of those two. As he walks, he keeps an eye out for them (spot=7).
Shadow d20+7=17 d20+7=18 Friday September 10th, 2004 9:58:49 AM
As he hears voices, Shadow pushes Devryn back into the library. He will look around for a place to hide if the group enters the library. He will leave the door open a crack and watch for where the party goes (if it looks like they are going to enter the library he will move quickly but quietly to a place of hiding). After they pass by the door Shadow will attempt to follow them remaining out of sight if possible. Otherwise will join the group as if nothing happened.
(hide=17, move silently=18)
Mira d20+7=18 Friday September 10th, 2004 8:26:34 PM
Mira stays close to Sarla as she takes them through the manor. She is anxious to gaze upon this artifact, and racks her brain for any knowledge of such a thing. (Knowledge Arcana=18)
Conner d20+3=6 d20+2=11 Saturday September 11th, 2004 9:15:55 AM
Conner follows Sarla and the rest of the group through the manor. He tries to keep an eye out for the Shadow and Devryn [Spot=6, Listen=11].
Wilfire Ironhouse d20=19 d20=5 Sunday September 12th, 2004 12:34:26 AM
Wilfire also moves along with the group and listens and look carefully for Shadow and Devryn. (OOC spot 19, listen 5).
'With a name like Shadow he's going to be tough to find' he thinks to himself as he looks left and right.
Kadaz d20+1=15 d20+1=5 Sunday September 12th, 2004 11:34:08 AM
While walking through the house Kadaz also keeps his eyes and ears open. (spot 15, listen 5)
Uriel d20+4=20 d20+4=8 Sunday September 12th, 2004 5:51:39 PM
Uriel holds his tongue but does strain his eyes and ears looking for the two thieves. {Spot:20 Listen:8}
DM Kathy Monday September 13th, 2004 1:33:12 AM
Devryn and Shadow ease back into the library at the sound of people approaching. The voices and footsteps grow louder for a bit, then stop farther up the hallway, near one of the doors you haven't searched yet.
"In here," Sarla says, ushering the group into a room. [Devryn and Shadow hear that, but don't hear any of the rest of the conversation.]
[I'm going to assume the rest of the party is with Sarla unless somebody says otherwise.]
The room you enter is a study, obviously well-used and well-loved. It smells faintly of books, old leather, and pipe smoke. The couches and chairs are leather, many with books haphazardly atop them. More books line shelves on the wall. Sunlight streams through the rooms one window, illuminating the dancing motes of dust. The fireplace is cold now, but has obviously been put to good use in the past.
Sarla moves to a large oaken desk, piled high with papers, books, and journals. "I'm afraid it's still a bit of a mess," she says, dropping into the desk chair and beginning to look through the stacks. "Grandfather was no housekeeper, and I haven't gone through all his things yet. I do remember this journal, though. If I can find the dratted thing." She paws through some more stacks.
"Oh," she says, remembering. "The orb is here." She plucks it off the windowsill and holds it up to show. It consists of a glass globe on a carved wooden base. Inside the globe is a miniature house, with the tiny figures of a man and a woman standing outside. The entire scene is lit with a warm, golden light, which has no source you can discern.
"It's going to be sunny tomorrow," Sarla explains. "See how bright it is? If it were going to rain tomorrow, we'd see rain in the globe."
Handing it to whichever of the party shows an interest, she returns to rummaging through the desk. "I know it's in here," she says.
Evan Monday September 13th, 2004 5:34:42 AM
Despite Evan's curiousity for the artifact, he leaves the study of it to Mira, who is much more capable than he in the field of magic. Instead, Evan will take a place next to the door, away from the way it swings, back against the wall, waiting for anyone to show up, particularly the two they are looking for.
Arm d20+2=10 d20+2=21 Monday September 13th, 2004 5:54:10 AM
Arm waits until the rest of the party enters the study, then looks up & down the hallway to see if any other actions are taking place (listen=10, spot=21). If he doesn't find anything after a minute, he will retrace his steps to go outdoors, intent on finding the outbuilding where the prisoners are kept and dealing with the half-orc, if possible.
Kadaz Monday September 13th, 2004 7:35:43 AM
Kadaz stands with his back to the door watching the room, axe head resting on the floor and haft in hand. He can stand for hours in this guard position. When Arm goes to leave the room Kadaz asks "Where to? Looking for Devryn and Shadow?"
Shadow d20+1=8 d20+2=13 d20+7=17 Monday September 13th, 2004 10:26:49 AM
Shadow will move back to the door and open it a crack to see if there is any movement in the hallway. (Spot=8)
Seeing nothing happening in the hallway, he will try and listen, with the door cracked to see if he can hear anything. (Listen=13)
If he sees and hears nothing, he will move into the hallway and try and locate where the group went. (Move Silently=17)
Mira Monday September 13th, 2004 6:32:59 PM
Mira will cradle the artifact in her hand and study it, trying to recall if she had ever heard of such a thing. "Does it simply predict the weather, or can it be worked to manipulate the climate?" she asks, staring reverently at the orb.
I wonder who the figures represent? she wonders to herself.
(Previous roll for Knowledge Arcana=18, Sept. 10)
Wilfire Ironhouse Monday September 13th, 2004 6:44:40 PM
Wilfire stands next to Mira and look into the orb.
"Hey look Mira" he says as he points to the little man in the orb. "I think he's smiling at you" he chuckles.
Conner d20+3=12 Monday September 13th, 2004 9:49:07 PM
Conner stands by the door and scans the interior of the room for anything unusual that might have been collected by the deceased adventurer. [Spot=12]
Uriel Monday September 13th, 2004 9:53:12 PM
Uriel looks at the orb with Mira.
"It would be very valuable for someone farming even if it could only predict the weather. It could allow someone to protect their plants against an unexpected frost, like in the book we found about the vineyards here," Uriel muses aloud.
DM Kathy Tuesday September 14th, 2004 12:12:43 AM
Shadow looks and listens, but is unable to determine exactly which door the other group entered. There are only two possibilities in this hall, though, so it shouldn't be too difficult to narrow it down.
He and Devryn slip into the hall and begin moving toward the first door. Shadow is moving with little sound, but Devryn seems to be having trouble. His footsteps scuffle on the tile.
In the room, Arm hears the noise of somebody out in the hallway.
Kadaz, Evan, and Conner stand near the door, watchful and alert. Conner glances around for anything unusual, but sees only books, papers, and dust.
Mira, Wilfire, and Uriel examine the globe. Mira does not recall having heard of anything like this, although she does know that there are divinations that can be cast by both divine and arcane spellcasters. Perhaps that kind of magic has been woven into the sphere.
"It doesn't change the weather," Sarla answers, switching to another pile. "Just predicts it. But as the knight said, even prediction can be useful. Aha!" She pulls a small, dog-eared journal from somewhere in the middle of the pile, and the rest of the pile promptly topples to the floor. "Blast it! Anyway, here it is. Grandfather's journal."
She moves out from behind the desk, flipping pages. "Hmm....that's the encounter with the chimera," she mutters, skimming the text. "Giant...giant...giant...ah, here it is." She holds the book out, pointing to a spot on the page. "It begins here and goes on for several pages. It describes how they all went to the village to recuperate, how he saw the globe and took a fancy to it, and how he bought it. For 500 gold pieces." As with the globe, she will hand the journal off to anyone who wants to look at it.
Evan d20+7=18 Tuesday September 14th, 2004 5:43:43 AM
Evan waits expectantly for Mira to make a decision about the globe. It seems rather cut and dried to him, if Shadow and Devryn want the globe back, at the very least they should have to produce 500 gold to gain it back. He wonders if they even considered offering to buy it back from the woman. Keeping an ear towards the door for the approach of the two, he watches Mira, finding her a pleasant sight to occpy his eyes while he waits. (listen-18)
Arm d20+2=18 Tuesday September 14th, 2004 5:55:58 AM
Arm, hearing the noises out in the hallway, grips Evan & Kadaz' shoulders and motions toward the hallway. Drawing his sword, he prepares to enter the hallway while listening for more activity (listen=18)
Shadow d20+2=10 d20+1=21 d20+7=16 Tuesday September 14th, 2004 10:09:19 AM
Shadow shakes his head as the Devryn (the so called theif) makes a ton of noise in comparison to us.
Shadow will continue to listen and try and spot any activity from the group that passed them. (listen=10 spot=21)
He will continue to move down the hall trying to make as little noise as possible. (Move silently=16) He will stop at the first door that is on the right.
Kadaz d20+1=13 d20+1=4 Tuesday September 14th, 2004 12:42:17 PM
Kadaz turns and follows Arm, all senses now alert. (spot 13, listen 4)
Uriel Tuesday September 14th, 2004 3:46:55 PM
{OOC: You realize guys that we are not in a dungeon, we are in an inhabited house with servants and such. They or Sarla may not take kindly to the drawn weapons. :) }
Mira d20+2=17 Tuesday September 14th, 2004 7:59:05 PM
Mira's head snaps up as she comes out of her reverie, and hands the globe back to its owner. Putting a finger up to her lips in the universal sign of silence, Mira whispers to Sarla, "as I've said in the past, we are not the only ones interested in your orb here." Pointing to the hallway, she continues, "my friends will find them out."
Mira stays in the study with Sarla, and adds in a low voice, "Lady, I am very sorry for the inconvenience we have caused you and wish there is some way to make amends..." The sorcerer's voice trails off as she listens intently to what is going on in the hallway. (Listen=17)
Conner d20+5=16 d20+3=13 Tuesday September 14th, 2004 8:09:47 PM
Being closest to the door, Conner passes into the hallway on the alert for intruders, and half expecting to find the two newcomers snooping around. He will attempt to collar (Touch Attack=16) and hold (Dex. check vs Str. 13) whoever he finds outside the door of the room.
DM Kathy d20=8 Wednesday September 15th, 2004 1:18:53 AM
Sarla gasps and takes a step back when Arm draws his weapon. "Is-is that really necessary?" she asks.
In the hallway, Arm, Kadaz, and Conner find themselves face to face with Shadow and Devryn.
"Ah. There you are," Devryn says. "Good. Excellent. Well, and where is my orb? Have you located it?" It's a bluff, and not a very good one [Sense Motive DC 11].
Meanwhile, Sarla looks at Mira. "You have caused inconvenience, it's true, but you made up for it by helping foil my cousin's attempt and capturing her. I suppose I owe you something for that. I was just wondering how the estate could repay you all."
Wilfire Ironhouse d20=8 Wednesday September 15th, 2004 1:29:38 AM
As soon as he knows something is going on in the halls he follows the source of Devryn's voice.
Once there he will look over Devryn for any sign of a weapon (spot 8).
Evan Wednesday September 15th, 2004 5:38:49 AM
Evan remains in the room with Mira and Sarla, moving so that he is standing between the door and the two women, facing the door, ready in case one of the two......rogues manage to slip past the others. As much as he would like to help in the hallway, this is a time for diplomacy not violence and without a voice, there is very little chance of Evan being doplomatic. He does not draw any weapon as he does not want Sarls any more frightened than she already is.
Arm d20=16 Wednesday September 15th, 2004 6:31:09 AM
Not sheathing his weapon just yet, Arm sees right through the pathetic attempt to cover their true intentions (sense motive=16). He says to them, "I think the more important question is where the two of you have disappeared to. Since you didn't arrive here with us, I can only assume that you entered here under less than honorable means.". Saying so, he calls to Sarla, "Lady Sarla, we've found the two that were missing. We are going to put them in the outbuilding with the other prisoners until this can all be straightened out.".
Shadow Wednesday September 15th, 2004 11:07:36 AM
"It is true that we did not enter with you, but does that require you to treat us as criminals. I am not sure you are in here for your 'honorable' reasons either. Were you not working for this lady's cousin that just attacked her?" Shadow says showing his empty hands and not looking at all like he is going to reach for any weapons.
"We are of no threat to you, but could be of help." Shadow will start to move into the room the group just left.
Kadaz d20+7=9 Wednesday September 15th, 2004 6:27:38 PM
Kadaz moves to put himself between Shadow and the room. "You're now welcome in there. Remain in the hall." he growls. Kadaz braces himself to resist any movement past him into the room but the tight quarters prevents himself from getting properly set. (opposed strength check 9)
Birdie picks up as he hears his master's voice tense up. Who to bite? He looks around at the folks in the hall, ready to jump into the fray if ordered.
Mira Wednesday September 15th, 2004 8:52:26 PM
Mira is surprised that Sarla is interested in providing some compensation. The sorcerer had thought the group might end up having to rid a vineyard of kobold squatters or route a bugbear out of the dungeon under the manse, or some other onerous task in order to atone for their mistake.
Her attention is brought 'round by the voices in the hallway. "Is there any way to share the information provided by the device so that the whole plateau, and maybe beyond could benefit from it? You know, make it scry-able?"
Conner d20+5=23 d20+3=11 Wednesday September 15th, 2004 9:04:45 PM
Conner reaches out again (Touch Attack=23) making a grab for Devryn's collar. "You're not going anywhere, fella," he grumbles in a low voice, finding it hard to look stern. The two rogues look like they're heading for hot water.
Conner holds the rogue firmly. (Str.=11)
DM Kathy d20=19 Thursday September 16th, 2004 2:02:22 AM
Wilfire steps out into the hallway to join Arm, Kadaz, and Conner as they confront Devryn and Shadow.
"Lady Sarla said she would discuss the ownership of the item with me!" Devryn says, sounding a little desperate. "You heard her! She said so! We are just here to talk with her."
Conner reaches out to grab Devryn, but the young rogue wriggles out of his grasp. "Stop that!" he says angrily. "I'm just here to talk!"
Meanwhile, Kadaz steps between the rogues and the open door, looking to keep them out, and Arm calls out for Lady Sarla.
In the room, Sarla replies to Mira's question. "I honestly don't know whether the orb could be scried or not. I have no skill with magic. Grandfather did write, however, that the globe only predicts the weather for the location it happens to be in. The prediction would get more inaccurate the farther away one got."
Responding to Arm's shout, she them moves into the hallway. Hearing Devryn's protestations, she sighs and folds her arms. "I did say I'd talk with him," she concedes.
Evan Thursday September 16th, 2004 5:40:19 AM
Evan takes a step forward into the hall to allow Lady Sarla a chance to see Devryn and Shadow but remains at diligent guard at her side in case one of the two rogues makes a play for Sarla. He glances back to Mira, silently imploring her to bring Sarla back into the room.
Arm Thursday September 16th, 2004 5:53:06 AM
Arm sighs and says to Devryn, "Very well, you wanted to speak, so speak. However, from now until we leave, you and your companion will remain under the watchful eyes of no less than 3 of us, just in case the two of you decide to go a-wandering again.".
Shadow Thursday September 16th, 2004 6:04:21 PM
Looking a little chastised, but still not really looking guilty at all, Shadow will remain where he is and await what Devryn has to say to the Lady.
He does shake his head at how the men of steel have treated Devryn and himself, but will wait to see.
Uriel d20+3=22 Thursday September 16th, 2004 6:41:37 PM
"Everyone. Calm down. We are all still on edge from being duped by Avandri. I am willing to give these two the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise. I apologize Lady, for my friends. As I say, this has been a difficult time for us." Uriel sketches a small bow at the end of his speech towards Sarla.
Conner Thursday September 16th, 2004 7:45:51 PM
Conner desists from further attempts to grab Devryn and instead ushers him into the study with Sarla.
Kadaz Thursday September 16th, 2004 9:25:12 PM
Kadaz puts his head on Birdie's head. "Hold on boy." He stands with his arms crossed watching the others.
Mira Thursday September 16th, 2004 9:49:49 PM
Looking at Evan, Mira raises her hands to her shoulders with a shrug, then signs "they might be thieves, but I doubt they're dangerous. Let's see what can be worked out."
She moves closer to Evan, but not so close that she hems him in.
DM Kathy Friday September 17th, 2004 2:46:01 AM
Lady Sarla leads the way back into the study, and Arm, Kadaz, Uriel, and Wilfire make sure that Devryn and Shadow aren't going anywhere else. Once you are all inside, Sarla waves vaguely at the sofas and chairs in an invitation to sit, and plops back into the desk chair.
"There they are, Master Rogue," she says, a trace of irony in her voice. "The orb my grandfather bought, and the journal that proves he bought it."
Devryn draws himself up. "My name is Devryn," he replies, "and as I understand it, that journal was written by your grandfather in his own hand. What proof do we have that he was telling the truth?"
"You overstep yourself sir," Sarla says coldly. "I will discuss an amicable settlement with you, but I will not sit here and listen as my grandfather's honor is called into question. He paid the sum of 500 gold for the orb. Are you prepared to buy it back at that price?"
Clearly frustrated, Devryn shakes his head. "We are but a poor farming village," he says, "we don't have that kind of money."
Evan Friday September 17th, 2004 5:48:50 AM
Evan smiles as Mira moves closer to him. He has been having some very odd and very pleasant dreams about her lately and enjoys being close to her. He's even reached the point where he does not blush immediately when she looks at him.
He listens as Lady Sarla and Devryn discuss the disposition of the orb and understands Devryn's frustration as Evan is feeling a bit poor himself at the moment.
Uriel Friday September 17th, 2004 8:09:11 AM
"Sarla, you mentioned owing us something for helping you when you were attacked by your sister," Uriel shifts, a bit uncomfortable.
He continues, "Could we perhaps take the orb as part of our payment or could we buy the orb for 500 GP?"
Arm Friday September 17th, 2004 11:20:24 AM
Arm snorts derisively at Uriel's comment in the hallway, muttering, "Yes, please defend all the malcontents of the Wold, won't you?", and follows the group into the study, content at the moment to let the negotiations play out as they are.
Conner Friday September 17th, 2004 8:35:39 PM
Conner listens to the discussion as it unfolds and has the uncomfortable feeling that there will be little or no profit from this latest venture. Without an alternative to Uriel's proposal he remains silent and awaits a better solution from either Sarla herself or one of his own companions.
Kadaz Friday September 17th, 2004 9:25:18 PM
500 gp? Where will they get 500 gold? 50 maybe but 500?
"The evidence indicates that Sarla's grandfather did purchase the globe without guile. The villagers may have made a bad bargin but they have had the use of the 500 gp for many years. I don't believe Sarla is in the wrong here."
Shadow Saturday September 18th, 2004 10:36:56 AM
Shadow is a little relieved to see that Devryn and he are at least not being treated as prisoners. 'Well at least not quite' he corrects in his own mind.
He will maintain his silence and wait to see what happens. 'Well I probably will not get paid for trying to help Devryn.' His mind wanders as he waits to see what transpires.
Wilfire Ironhouse Sunday September 19th, 2004 6:28:10 PM
Wilfire continues to guard Devryn, but he does not think or worry about the 500 gold too much.
"500 gold is a good price for peace, and for the well-being of this village"
Mira Sunday September 19th, 2004 6:31:41 PM
The sorcerer sighs when the paladin suggests what small recompense the group might secure be handed over to another.
There is no way she could afford to contribute anything towards the purchase of the orb, and she wasn't about to sell the thin golden band gifted to her by Evan, even if it was part of their disguise.
Mira takes the ring off her left hand, and slips it over the ring finger of her right hand.
DM Kathy Sunday September 19th, 2004 10:21:37 PM
Devryn takes up the journal and reads the entry, frowning. "I don't understand it," he murmurs. "Five hundred? Why did none of the elders ever mention such a sum?"
Sarla, meanwhile, listens soberly as Uriel and Wilfire offer to help buy the orb. "Since you are willing to make sacrifices to settle this," she sighs, "I suppose I can do no less. Master Ro--I mean, Devryn. How much can you afford to pay for the orb?"
Devryn shakes his head. "Not more than 100," he replies. "Less, if I am to pay my associate," he waves his hand in Shadow's direction.
"Very well," Sarla says. "Pay me what you can, and do not neglect your associate. The estate shall bear the loss--with the help of these good folk, if they are amenable to receiving a slightly smaller reward."
She looks at you all, waiting for your answer.
Mira Monday September 20th, 2004 12:14:34 AM
The sorcerer is stunned (and excited) by the turn of events. Devryn's community might get the orb back, and the lady is talking of giving them a reward!
Mira signs to Evan, too bad there wasn't some way they couldn't share the artifact.
Uriel Monday September 20th, 2004 12:17:57 AM
"You are most gracious, Lady Sarla. All here know my feelings on this. I am willing to a smaller reward." Uriel says to all.
Wilfire Ironhouse Monday September 20th, 2004 5:46:55 AM
Wilfire nods his head in approval for the good ladies actions.
"Very gracious indeed" Wilfire adds. "Helping such a wonderful person would be reward enough."
Arm d20=18 Monday September 20th, 2004 5:54:15 AM
Noticing Sarla's faux pas, he finally speaks up, "My lady, you were about to call this gentleman by another name...may I inquire as to what it was?". (sense motive=18)
Evan d20+7=25 Monday September 20th, 2004 5:56:15 AM
Evan seems quite surprised by the sudden turn of events, particularly since Sarla had been so curt eariler. He is also curious as to the name Sarla had been about to call Devryn. He glances towards Mira, feeling like something is not right here, just in time to spot her shifting the gold band she had been using as part of her disguise from her left ring finger, the finger you would wear the ring on if you were married, to her right hand. It is with some sadness that Evan realizes the ruse is finished. He absently twists his matching ring on his finger, but leaves it in place for now.
Conner Monday September 20th, 2004 7:24:57 AM
Conner listens to the conversation between Sarla and Devryn. The fighter resigns to the fact that the reward if any will fail to cover their expenses.
Shadow Monday September 20th, 2004 10:19:07 AM
Shadow is taken aback when hears that the fighter, Arm, comments that Sarla was going to call Devryn, 'Master Ro...". He is surprised he did not catch it, but waits to see what her response is to it.
IF she does not respond to Arm, Shadow will inquire, "Devryn, is that your real name, or is there something else that I should know?" Shadow will look at his employer to see what reaction he has.
DM Kathy Monday September 20th, 2004 11:14:36 PM
"Well, I was about to call him 'Master Rogue' as I did a moment ago," Sarla replies. "but he made it plain he does not like it." Her mouth twists into a wry grimace. "I have been working on my diplomacy skills, you see."
Arm senses that she is telling the truth.
[Boy, are you all paranoid! I guess my work here is done. :)]
"If you are all in agreement," Sarla continues, "then Devryn, you and your village may have the orb back and welcome. As for the rest of you--" she looks around the untidy study and sighs. "I have one more thing to ask of you before I give you your reward. Can you escort Jarvis back to his home? He may be an idiot, but I've known him since we were five and I'd take it amiss if something happened to him. And he was looking distinctly green about the gills before." A derisive snort. "I don't think combat agrees with him."
"While you're gone, I'll see what the estate can spare you."
Evan Tuesday September 21st, 2004 5:29:28 AM
Evan relaxes, finding Sarla's explaination suitable. He hopes she will allow him to keep the weapons gathered from the bullies hired by Avandri as that could also go towards helping compensate them for their expenses. He signs to Mira to ask Avandri what she would like them to do with Avandri and her bullies.
Arm Tuesday September 21st, 2004 6:04:37 AM
Arm relaxes as well after hearing Sarla's explanation. His thoughts now turn to returning to their flat and relaxing for a bit.
Shadow Tuesday September 21st, 2004 10:07:59 AM
Still wary about the explanation given by Lady Sarla he will watch Devryn for any signs of knowing this lady. He will wait to see what transpires and the group gets off the estate before he will approach his employer for his fees.
Kadaz Tuesday September 21st, 2004 4:56:37 PM
"We were paid by Avandri in bad faith so I do not feel obliged to return her money. I also do not feel we deserve any payment by you, Miss Sarla. Your forgiveness for our intrusion would satisify me."
Conner Tuesday September 21st, 2004 5:40:06 PM
"And what about our prisoners? Shouldn't we escort them to the local law constabulary?" asks the fighter.
Mira Tuesday September 21st, 2004 8:32:13 PM
"Jarvis it is then," sighs the sorcerer turning to her friends. "Let us do as the Lady asks, and escort her admirer back to his estate."
Mira catches Evan's hand signals, and turns back to Sarla, echoing Conner's comment, "do you have the people to get your cousin and her associates to the proper authorities? If not, we can assist in that regard when return from delivering Sir Jarvis."
Mira tries to catch Uriel's eye as well as Evan's and signs, what about yon rogue? indicating Shadow. If he has no employment, perhaps he might like to accompany us on our return to Plateau City? The green-eyed woman smiles wryly, before adding, he may have fared better with his patron than we have with ours!
Uriel Tuesday September 21st, 2004 10:30:09 PM
Uriel nods his head at Mira's signs.
"Lets escort our young noble home," Uriel says to the others.
DM Kathy Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 12:24:20 AM
"Suit yourself," Sarla replies to Kadaz. "But if she had not hired you, my cousin would have found someone else to take her gold--someone, perhaps, without your conscience." Her gaze sweeps you all. "You saved the estate for me, and I believe the estate can spare you something in return. Consider it, won't you, as you return Jarvis to his home?"
She nods when Conner reminds her of the prisoners, and begins rummaging in the desk. "Right. Them. Well, Jarvis's father is the local magistrate, so if you'd be good enough to take him a note from me--" she sighs and slaps her hands on the desktop. "If I can find a pen, that is--anyway, if you can take him a note from me I think we can get Avandri and her minions sorted out."
After a bit more rummaging--and a plea for assistance from some of the servants--she manages to locate pen, ink, and parchment, and writes a short note for you to take to the magistrate. As she is busy with her task, Devryn quietly counts out 25 gold and hands them to Shadow.
"Thank you for your help," he says. "I wish I could pay you more, but as you see--" a wry smile--"I require the rest for other purposes." He places his purse on the desk and picks up the orb. "I trust this completes our transaction?" he asks Sarla.
"It does," she replies. "I hope it brings you the prosperity you seek."
He bows and departs, orb in hand.
You take your leave of Sarla and return to the front hall to collect Jarvis--still looking, as Sarla had said, a little green about the gills.
"Dashed good fight, what?" he says, striving in vain for airy jocularity. "Nothing I like better than a good scrap in defense of my lady."
Soon you are on your way back to Jarvis's estate--with, perhaps, some things to discuss along the way.
[Feel free to post more than once if necessary. OOC, I'd hate for you guys to come out of this adventure with no treasure, but if you want to for roleplaying purposes, I'll support it. Also, Shadow, do you tag along with them or return to Plateau City? Either will work. :) ]
Wilfire Ironhouse Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 5:20:19 AM
Wilfire has been quietly confused every since Avandri attacked them at the gates. "Things sure ain't as clear cut as the old days. Used to be easy to tell good from bad, and to sort em out good and quick. Even drunk I could do that."
"But with this whole episode behind us, I have this panging feeling in my heart that Sarla is good. And I don't really care much if I profit from her or not. Then again, a man's got to make a living don't he?"
Evan Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 6:15:41 AM
Evan walks beside Mira as they escort Jarvis back to his home. At Jarvis' words, Evan smiles and claps Jarvis on the back in a friendly manner as if to agree with the man. For someone who is not really a fighter, Jarvis bravely held his own in the fight.
Evan is not happy with the idea that they will come out of this with little to no reward. Evan is not money-hungry by any means but he does have expenses, what with having to board Ariel while they are in the city. But he will abide by whatever decision Mira makes concerning the reward.
Shadow Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 10:09:36 AM
"Thank you, and I am glad that you have what we came for." as Shadow receives his payment. He does have a slight feeling of guilt about taking the money, but it passes quickly because he did complete the assignment. He pockets the gold even though he would have preferred not to have been paid in front of the group that they became part of. Especially after they have been mislead by their former employer.
"I am not sure that you really trust me, but I really was only trying to complete a mission." He says to the group as they return to the front of the estate. He stops and waits for the group to get together and he will follow them out the gate.
IF the group continues on without asking him to join, he will head back to Plateau City.
Arm Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 1:11:52 PM
On the way to Jarvis' estate, Arm asks the group, "What say you this...if we don't accept any reward from Lady Sarla, how about asking her if she would be so kind as to provide us with shelter, even in an outbuilding, should our travels cross this way again?. It's certainly not like we'd abuse the priviledge, but this WOULD be a nice stopping-over point should we need to continue further.".
OOC: In my humble opinion, gaining treasure would not follow well with the flow of the story...perhaps some extra XP, Kathy? ;-)
Mira Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 5:50:05 PM
"Yes, I too, am uncomfortable accepting remuneration from the lady. Having given up the artifact, she is already relinquishing what advantage she had in making a profit from the estate."
The sorcerer smiles warmly at the bard when he makes his proposal. "That is a brilliant suggestion," she says, adding, "and perhaps she might bear us some good will, and recommend us to one of her friends who may have need of our services!" With a thoughtful look, Mira continues, "surely her friends would be more reputable than those of her cousin?"
(OOC: I'm in agreement. Would rather play a poorer character for a while, than go against the grain of the story.)
Conner Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 6:43:57 PM
Convinced that the group has abandoned the idea of a reward from Sarla, the fighter can only hope that Avandri and her companions might bring some bounty from the local magistrate, a dim hope at best.
When Shadow speaks of mistrust Conner replies, "Why don't you join us in escorting Jarvis here to his home. Maybe if we know you better we can get past the circumstances of our meeting".
Kadaz Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 11:05:09 PM
"It's not right to take money from Sarla. But they grow grapes here. How about a few bottles of wine?"
Uriel Wednesday September 22nd, 2004 11:44:01 PM
Uriel remains silent letting the others discuss the rewards. When 'Shadow' speaks of his mission, Uriel says, "I hold no ill will towards you. I do think you could have chosen a wiser course of action than the one you were taking but we all make bad decisions at times. Come with us - you will see that under less distrustful conditions we are much easier company."
DM Kathy Thursday September 23rd, 2004 12:26:48 AM
You all, Shadow included, escort Jarvis to his home without incident, and deliver the note from Sarla. Jarvis's father, a bluff, stern-faced man, agrees to see to the prisoners as soon as he is able and begins making preparations.
You return to Wycklea and inform Sarla of your decision--that you cannot in good conscience accept money from her. She listens gravely, and bows. "If that is your decision, I shall of course respect it," she says. "You may certainly stay here anytime you are in this part of the country, and I will recommend you to any of my friends that might need your services--although," a wry smile, "I sincerely hope life in these parts will be very quiet now that Avandri can no longer work her mischeif."
She motions to a servant, who comes forward bearing a crate. "I cannot let you go entirely empty-handed, though," she says. "Please take this wine as a token of my thanks, and know that my gates are always open to you."
You make your farewells and, wine in tow, journey safely back to Plateau City.
[OOC: sorry if I've rushed anybody; please holler if I've skipped any business you wanted your character to do. This pretty much ends the module. Experience and Hero Points to come via e-mail.]
Arm Thursday September 23rd, 2004 5:59:26 AM
Grateful to be home again, Arm procures a bottle of wine for himself and retires to his room, idly strumming his lute a bit before falling asleep.
Evan Thursday September 23rd, 2004 6:29:12 AM
Evan will be glad to return to Plateau City. Before they leave, if the Magistrate and Sarla will allow it, he takes the weapons they confiscated from the bullies and adds them to the cart. He also does not believe that they should accept any sort of reward from Sarla but the weapons are spoils of war and can be sold to help allieviate their expenses.
Conner Thursday September 23rd, 2004 7:41:15 AM
Conner wanders over to Samson's, a bottle of wine under his arm, in search of Amy.
Uriel Thursday September 23rd, 2004 8:04:13 AM
Uriel will invite Shadow to Samson's to talk and drink.
If his offered is accepted, Uriel will buy a round of drinks and try to draw out his companion.
Wilfire Ironhouse Thursday September 23rd, 2004 9:15:46 AM
Wilfire's eyes went wide and his hand started to tremble when the others started pouring the wine.
"I...I... I am sorry, but I must decline. Me and the bottle go together like orcs and elves I'm afraid."
Red faced with embarassment Wilfire turned and looked for something to occupy his mind... something that would chase the demons away.
"Let's see those weapons you have there Evan" Wilfire said as he took one of the weapons in hand. "I'm sure we can put em to better use them those thugs did."
With weapon in hand Wilfire's redness dissappeared from his face. His obvious internal struggle washed away, not by alchol this time, but from a sturdy and relaible weapon.
Mira Thursday September 23rd, 2004 12:33:21 PM
Mira is happy to be back at their flat, humble as it is, and dumps her pack in a corner of her room before seeking out Uriel.
"I see Wilfire has made himself at home here. Why don't we invite the rogue to share our lodgings as well? That is, if he doesn't already have a place of his own." Mira blushes a little, then adds, "I am comfortable in the ranger's company. If he would not be adverse to the idea, I will share the room in the corner, and Wilfire and Shadow can have my room."
Mira will lean against the doorway to Arm's room, listening to his music. When the music stops, she will go looking for Evan at the place where he boards his horse, Ariel, and propose her idea. If he is in agreement, she will return to the flat, move her gear out of her old room and into the new one, claiming the vacant cot.
Shadow d20+4=23 Thursday September 23rd, 2004 6:47:45 PM
Shadow joins the group heading back to Plateau City.
Upon the invitation to join them, "I will join you, but I first must check in on my flat. I will then join you at Samson's." [OOC: if he knows the place he will not ask the following - Knowledge Local=23] "Where is this Samson's."
Once he has directions he will go to his 'place' in the guild and leave some of his 'working' stuff there. He will then go to Samson's and see what this group is like in a different setting.
For the offer of rooming, "Thank you, but I do have a place to stay."
Uriel Thursday September 23rd, 2004 7:22:13 PM
Uriel says to Mira, "That's a good idea." He smiles and winks at Mira.
"I might just get my own room out of it, since Shadow has a place." He shrugs.
