Shiraz Wednesday August 25th, 2004 6:48:33 AM
Shiraz looks at his companions, "we should not split ourselves up," Shiraz states firmly. "If we do we are asking for trouble. We should attack from a distance first, arrows and magic, but I dont see any reason for us to be on opposite sides of the camp."
Sly and Luke Wednesday August 25th, 2004 7:42:46 AM
Sly swip his nice hot brew, "Friend Jason, we are not going after women and children, we are going after the raiders! we better wait and see what Peerimus has seen for us, before we leave. We'll know more then." Then Sly starts to think, "Now let's see I have my Flaming Sphere, Magic Missels,Acid Splash also Scorching Ray. I think that's all the attack spell I have for now?? I also have three Scrolls, The first one is Blindness/Deaftness, the second one is Chill Touch and the last one is Shocking Grasp. That about it for me, I hope it's good enough what do you think?? Friend Savin?"
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+20=21 Wednesday August 25th, 2004 9:41:35 AM
Yorrick slides closer to Niobe as she shifts away a bit. The bear moves in and bumps her hand with his head for a petting or scratching.
Peerimus makes several passes over the camp to make sure he has not missed anything. In particular the trail a war party might make, in case the orcs though of sending a group out to try and out flank them. [Spot 21 natural 1 failed]
With snow apperently blowing into his eyes, he turns and heads back swiftly. He lands, shifts and informs the group "The orcs are out and moving about and between each gap in the Ice Spikes of the four main gaps leading into the camp is guarded by around 6 orcs a piece. The camp other wise is pretty calm and nothing else moves except a couple at a small fire out in the center of the group of around fifteen or twenty tents. One in the center is alot larger then the ones around it."
"I do not know if this is the entire village or a very large raiding party. Orcs all look the same to me, especially from above. Definately no children about. The larger tent may be a slave tent or the leaders."
Jason of Aislidur Wednesday August 25th, 2004 1:39:37 PM
Jason nods to Shiraz in appreciation of his suggestion. He then adds in some more thoughts, and perhaps explanation.
"My suggestion of splitting the party was to enable us to take out two prongs of their four guard prongs that guard between the spikes. If we all go as a single group, we might do well against the first group, yes, but then we would have 3 groups of 6 coming at us all at once, let alone what other warriors might be in the main part of the encampment. If we split and attack from a distance, then in close, we perhaps take out most of two whole groups, then only have the two groups to deal with." Spreading ourselves also makes us less suceptable to archer fire, or at least spreads us out from it...but I will leave it for the group to decide." he finishes.
Niobe Wednesday August 25th, 2004 3:08:35 PM
Niobe scratches Yorrick round the head and behind the ears reaching deep beneath his thick fur with her fingers. She listens to the discussion about splitting the team and cocks her head to one side.
"Jason I don't think we have enough people to split the group at any rate. There is only seven of us, and Yorrick and Luke; one group would only be three people. Never mind that we need to know just how many 'enemies' there are in the first place."
Niobe shifts and starts to scratch Yorrick about the neck, "I don't much fancy; say, five to one odds. If we have the time I would say that our best bet is to lure a patrol or two out and ambush them. That way we won't have to deal with any women and children - and we would have the bonus of far fewer enemies to deal with each time." With an impish grin she concludes, "not to cramp your style or anything Jason but I still vote for stealth. Are you used to working with militia? With your tactics I would guess yes." The thief's last comments are just idle talk and it shows in her relaxed pose and body language.
Savin Wednesday August 25th, 2004 3:35:58 PM
Savin looks puzzled at some of the talk and asks, "Aren't orcish females and children evil as well? Wouldn't they stick a knife in our backs as quickly as they could? I am not overly concerned about their welfare. I am not going out of my way to hunt them down and hurt them but if some get caught in the crossfire, so be it.
We are outnumbered and must use our advantages to the best of our abilities. These are the same creatures who burned the villages tents. Without shelter in this enviroment, you simply die.
Look at it this way. If we go in and kill all the male orcs over 16 years of age. The warriors. Won't the rest just starve to death for lack of food. I am assuming we are killing the hunters of the tribe. It is a dilema."
A View From The Sky (DM/Al) Wednesday August 25th, 2004 9:22:10 PM
The group remains within the night's camp, awaiting the return of their druid companion. The discussion of both ethics as well as tactics whips about the small camp of adventurers like the wind in a gale.
Fortunately for Peerimus, the winds across the plains of Ice Vein are still today. The heavy snow fall does obscure the eagle-form druid's vision. But it can effect his natural acuity only so much. Still, Peerimus sees no sign of any raiding parties.
Of the orcs who travel occasionally between the tents, some the gray eagle identifies as female. These, however, he notes, are garbed as warriors. The tents too, seem unlike the more permanent tented structures at the barbarian village of Smashed Teeth. This may be a difference in crafting skills. And it may not.
One more thing Peerimus sees before winging back to camp through the curtain of large falling snowflakes: A Captive. From above, the druid can see that the figure is tall, most likely well over six feet. Yet he, for by the beard it is clear that the captive is male, gives the impression of being thin and lanky as he is shoved along the path between tents. Neither is the captive particularly dressed for the weather, sporting only a hooded cloak for protection against the cold of Ice Vein. One last detail is trapped by the druid's eagle eyes before the captive is pushed into the dark interior of the large tent: The captive is gagged.
<Movement? Actions?>
Though large flakes of snow drift softly to the icy ground upon which the party stands. Dark and trackless dimensions away, lightening splits the sky over a house that looks remarkably similar to DM Justin's. The sky opens and hailstones the size of Persian cats rain down making feline sized dents in the hoods of cars. The dark spectre of a vacationing Co-DM looms above. Suddenly, Ice Vein doesn't seem so bad after all. ^_^
Ilsidur Wednesday August 25th, 2004 10:50:09 PM
Ilsidur listens to what Peerimus has to say from his scouting trip, and replies, "This sounds like an orc attack camp, not a village with families. Jason, I have to agree with Niobe. We fight best when we can support each other, and to do that we need to be together. If we manage to get close enough to one of the four gates to attack, we might be able to wipe out those guards before reinforcements arrive. Now, let's get going, before the orcs strike camp and head out. Also, we need to see to that captive, before the orcs can finish him off. We can discuss tactics a little more on the way. For instance, I have a spell that will let someone fly; I have a spell that will let me teleport myself and up to three others about 500', and I have another spell that will let me teleport myself and up to three others for a number of miles."
The dwarf throws on his gear, then wraps the white wolf fur around his body, and heads out of the cave in the direction of the orc encampment.
Sly and Luke Thursday August 26th, 2004 6:26:28 AM
Sly tries to stop Ilsidur,"WAIT! This sounds like a slave camp! the male slave sound like a magic user?? there might just be other slaves there?? Come On people let's go!" Sly check his sword, put on a white cape. Then heads for the opening, but to the Paladin. Sly tells him "The warriers there are Females and Slave Keepers! Stay here if your squeemish about the evils of slavery." The the half Elf head out...
Luke hearing the tone in Sly voice, Knows that some one is in trouble. Luke get's out of the sleeping bag and runs after Sly, Yelling "WAIT!"
Jason of Aisildur Thursday August 26th, 2004 6:55:01 AM
Jason is taken back by Sly's harsh demeanor.
"I assumed we all have permission to speak our mind openly, and I was just doing so. Not all of us have the same attitude toward warring. If I can tolerate our rogues actions, than perhaps my sensitivity towards women and children, even orcish ones, can be tolerated as well." he is about to get angry, but then thinks better of it, and adds,
"I am far from squeemish. If they are warriors, than I hope they die proudly on the battlefield." he states, then prepares and follows the rest out.
"Perhaps we could have Shiraz fly in courtesy of the spell mentioned, and then grab the bearded slave, and return with him for answers." Jason adds as he walks.
Shiraz Thursday August 26th, 2004 7:41:00 AM
Shiraz places the steel "hotbox" in its place on his back and finishes gearing up. "We stay together," Shiraz states looking at the group we can not afford to be separated." Shiraz pulls the last of his gear on and exits the tent. "Which way?" Shiraz asks looking around. Once he spots Sly and Luke Shiraz will head in that direction.
Peerimus and Yorrick [Extended Endure Elements, Greater Magic Fang] Thursday August 26th, 2004 10:26:14 AM
Peerimus gives a rough hug to Yorrick and whispers again and with another look at Niobe the bear grunts and stays on Peerimus' heel heading outside.
Outside, Peerimus Shifts into a great kodiak bear and says a small prayer, in bear "Mother Wold grant us security and comfort here in your house and Father Wold bestow upon us a portion of your might." [Cast and share Extended Endure Elements and Greater Magic Fang all weapons +1]
The two bears strike out after Ilsidur, quickly catching up.
Niobe Thursday August 26th, 2004 12:11:32 PM
Niobe is no less quick to get a move on than anyone else. The thief grabs her gear and one of the white cloaks. Niobe dons her gear and the cloak quickly.
She laughs at Jason for his comment about her and her actions. Niobe seems generally amused at Jason's comment. "Paladin, your chivalry towards the lesser races is commendable, but outdated. Your reaction to my ilk was absolutely expected - if more than a bit delayed."
Niobe will detain Jason for just a few seconds before leaving. "Sly has been looking for his family for a long time. They were abducted when he was younger. He took the news of their enslavement badly. Ergo he has little love for any slavers, which is probably why he was dissing your point of view." With a smirk she concludes, "luckily for you I seem to have thicker skin so your comment towards me merely amuses me."
She follows Sly and Ilsidur closely. Niobe hopes that Sly's family is either present at the camp; or at least that someone might know of them and their where-abouts.
Sly and Luke Thursday August 26th, 2004 5:57:48 PM
Sly notices that Niobe is behind him, he motions her to catch up to him and tell her. "I'm going to try to keep the females warriers buzy, if you get a chance try to rip a slit in the big tent and see if there's more slaves inside, and take away with you as much food, charcoal for our party. Thank you and I don't know what I'd do with out you."
They both march on with Luke and Yurrick behind them.
Jason of Aisildur Thursday August 26th, 2004 6:45:19 PM
Jason listens to Niobe, and smiles genuinely.
"I meant no ill intent by my words Niobe. It is no secret that I do not approve of the ways of the rogue, but you and I are bound together, as are the rest of us in this group, by something far greater. You need not think I am mocking you or tempting you into anger...I'm not. My words were meant only as a comparison to make with regard to my code and its restrictions and that it be accepted by the group, just as your 'ways' have been." he finishes the short speech, then moves on, with the others.
The paladin packs all the embers his box will safely take, then he gathers a fur and dawns his fur lined armor, before heading out...
Niobe Thursday August 26th, 2004 7:47:45 PM
Niobe will chuckle at part of Jason's reply. "What makes you think that they have accepted my 'ways'? Me they have accepted, but my methods are probably considered a necessary evil by a few I would think." She claps Jason companionably on he shoulder, "I don't think you have anything to worry about. Everyone will let you have your say and then we'll all get down to business and do whatever it is we do best in each our own ways." Niobe grins, "incedentally I always expected you to be at least somewhat critical of what I do. That's part of your job isn't it?" Her tone is friendly and with no animosity.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Niobe will catch up with Sly quite quickly, she listen to his suggestions. "No problem. I will happily sneak in, round up all the people I can and see to it that they have some means of keeping warm. Then I will most happily steal the orcs blind for provisions; especially any coal and rations." It is difficult to tell if she is being completely serious or if she is joking a bit. "Sly you don't need to thank me you know. I promised you that I would help and I have always intended to keep that promise." She flashes Sly a brilliant; if slightly mischievous, smile.
Justin Webber (DM) Camp Ahoy Captain! Thursday August 26th, 2004 9:08:09 PM
The group travels through the snow and icy patches slowly. The large snow flakes not making the traveling to difficult atleast but cutting down on sight just abit as the snow fall has picked up.
It is still cold enough that the snow falls and not rain and after a small walk since the group is all hyped up for some action you all reach the ouskirts of the large encampment.
You see that the ice spikes here are all over the place and can only hazard guesses why but not really know. You see many ways to go and Peerimus can lead the way through the ice spikes to the orc guards who guard each entrance into the camp or he can lead you far enough to get a better view all together and you can make better plans.
(OOC:I do not want to rush you right in to fast so you have time to work out decent plans and get a better idea of what your up against. Remember that Peerimus's flight on checking on the camp was earlier and it has been alittle while now and some to all the camp may be awake and active now for sure.) ********* Al: Thank you bud for posting for me and Ice Vein don't sound to bad to me since I designed it ;) You just have to know how to live there. Thanks for the joke also, it made me smile after the heck of yesterday.
Jason of Aisildur Thursday August 26th, 2004 9:42:19 PM
Jason looks around at the large ice spikes. Truely he is in a foreign land, and it is at this moment, perhaps more than all others, that he true realizes it.
"Peerimus, perhaps another 'flight' as a scout would help us better discover the full scope of the camp, in terms of approximate numbers of warriors. I would not want fair Niobe, as stealthy and quiet as she is, to be caught in the middle of a five hundred orc camp. Also, besides the guard posts, other strategic locations they may be guarding or found in could also be deduced from another look." Jason says. He then pauses, waiting for the others to speak.
Savin Thursday August 26th, 2004 9:44:36 PM
Savin will follow his normal procedure of circling the main body in a random way, looking for traps and other pitfalls. On one of his passes by the main group he will say, "I doubt the orcs will have their best on guard duty. I am sure the stronger will bully the weaker into standing out in the cold. If we could do a sleep spell or something like it low level, we might be able to take out a group quietly and sneak in."
Sly and Luke Friday August 27th, 2004 7:01:03 AM
Sly looks around, weather is good and with these cloaks we are more or less very hard to spot. "Alright I want infomation, I want ideas from each one of you. As to how you see this camp and how you would go in... Most of all what is in this camp?? Is it a Slavers camp?? or A raiders camp?? or are they getting ready for War?? I know Orcs they are sneekier than Deamons with no morals!!"
Luke was sitting next to Sly, the dog will start the meeting, "Yes! get food."
Sly look at his dog, then pats luke on his head, "Well! I guess the animals are getting hungry? Yes Luke, After the fight and a good get-a-way."
Peerimus [Bear] Yorrick [Extended Endure Elements, Greater Magic Fang] Friday August 27th, 2004 10:00:29 AM
Peerimus snorts into the snow and stops. With a paw he makes a circle. Looking to Sly he puts a print in the middle. On the outside, he taps 4 times in the same place and repeats the tapping 3 more times around the perimeter.
Looking to Jason he shakes his head and he does the same to Sly's first comment on slavers. Peerimus then takes a seat and has a breif chat with Yorrick who sits next to him
Niobe Friday August 27th, 2004 4:19:46 PM
Niobe does her best to interpret Peerimus' pointing and sketching. "Peerimus where is the big tent that they keep the non-orcs in?"
Niobe smiles to Jason, "I won't worry too much if they actually are able to find me. I figure you'll come charging in to defend me. Well I hope you would find me worth doing that..."
As an FYI to everyone Niobe states, "I intend to use whatever distraction you gentlemen can stir up to sneak into that big tent and see what I can do for those people. Any objections?"
Niobe intends to make the best use she can of the large white cloak and with the snowfall she reckons that hers chances of not being seen are pretty good.
Jason of Aisildur Friday August 27th, 2004 5:39:41 PM
"I would find anyone who needs it, worthy of my defence." Jason begins, "But as we are siblings to a cause, though what I am still unsure, I would gladly look death in the eye to keep you alive fair Niobe." the paladin then looks skyward and says a quiet prayer to Domi for their safety.
"If it is a noise or distraction you want, I know I can do my part." he finishes.
Justin Webber (DM) Camp defenses Friday August 27th, 2004 11:29:31 PM
Everyone looks over the drawling that Peerimus makes and can get a better idea of what he had seen. Of course once again this was awhile ago now and the camp maybe in more of a buzz then before.
(I figure by Savin's post that he is circling the camp to get a decent look before meeting up with the group?)
When Savin circles the camp area of the orcs he sees that the four and only four gaps to enter the camp have four guards. Each guard suprisingly is set up with a large axe and a simple bow like the previous orc archers you see before.
Inside the camp but not far as the ice spikes hide most of the camp area without getting close enough to have to hide from orc eyes, you see a couple half-orcs talking and moving about. The half-orcs look alittle different then their barbarian counterparts and wear more armor and have sheathed weapons.
In other news the snow flakes continue to fall and now and then still flashes of lightning can be seen in the sky. For a split second you even get to see a lightning bolt strike one of the ice spikes but the ice spike seems largely uneffected by the bolt.
Jason of Aisildur Saturday August 28th, 2004 6:59:18 AM
"Interesting." Jason states, "I wonder if the axes not only act as a primary weapon, but also as a chopping tool. I would hate to see ice from those Spikes get toppled down on top of us as we enter." the paladin states. He then resumes his gaze on the area, and listens to what the others have to say.
Niobe d20+9=26 d20+10=18 d20+10=12 Sunday August 29th, 2004 2:43:16 PM
Niobe doesn't have much more to add to the plans. She would still like to follow through with her plan to sneak in and get to the 'captives' tent. She listens to the others but is spending her time studying the enterance trying to find the best way past all of the guards and other orcs/half-orcs.

((OOC: Ignore the last roll it was accidental; I hit the wrong button.))
Ilsidur Sunday August 29th, 2004 4:22:15 PM
"Well, there are about a thousand different ways to approach this camp: sneak in first, disguise ourselves as orcs, have one of us sneak in, try to attract some of the orcs out, fly and climb in, frontal assault one of the openings, soften them up with magic and ranged weapons before the assault, teleport a number of us inside, wait until the weather is better, wait until the weather is worse, wait and watch for the day, summon creatures to attack before we attack, summon creatures to attack while we attack, feint from one side and attack from the other, create a whole bunch of noise and light distractions, etc., etc., etc."
One of us just has to decide what the approach will be, and the rest of us follow along. We can spend most of the day [OOC: And possibly 4-5 weeks of posting] discussing what each of us wants to do, and what each of us want the others to do. Shiraz, since you are our most accomplished fighter, I think that you should decide. My only caviat is that you don't split us up, unless you really think that you need to for the tactics."
Savin Sunday August 29th, 2004 10:12:58 PM
"No matter what happens, we are going to be overmatched by an entire raiding party if we allow them to get organized and ready. We need to hit hard and fast. Kill as many as possible in the shortest time and get the prisoners out. We can distract them by setting fire to the camp. Flaming sphere might be good at that?
I also agree that we shouldn't split up." The young monk adds in.
Peerimus [Bear] Yorrick [Extended Endure Elements, Greater Magic Fang] Monday August 30th, 2004 10:55:43 AM
Peerimus nods his head at Ilsidurs comments and then again at Savins. The two bears seem eager to get moving.
Sly and Luke Monday August 30th, 2004 7:23:37 PM
Sly listen to the sugestions an knods "I agree with you Ilsidur and you too Savin. Shiraz will make a fine leader." Sly keep's petting Luke.
Justin Webber (DM) Orc Camp Talks Tuesday August 31st, 2004 1:28:53 AM
The group sets back for abit longer talking over what to do and how to enter the camp. From the sounds the group is thinking of electing Shiraz the leader of the group for this.
A question is brought up about the ice spikes but it isn't answered and Niobe watches the orcs on guard but finds noe easy visible way past them without being seen or even touching one of them at times.
(OOC:Hope I'm not missing anything here. I checked my email late so I'm sorry for the lateness of this post and I believe Al will be with you all tomorrow to continue this week out. :) take it away Al.)
Sly and Luke Tuesday August 31st, 2004 8:38:12 AM
Sly crouches there, then take a look over his shoulder, turns back to the party, "I'm wondering about those spikes?? We all know what is inside of those spikes,
But for Jason information, there is Big white spiders or some of then Giant Ants, that eat everything in sight.
But I'm wondering about all this lighting going on?? I wonder whitch spikes they DO HIT, and whitch one they don't? The spikes surounds the camp, with path on the north, east, south and west sides. I wonder where the lighting is coming from?? And who is protecting this camp? and how?" Sly look out towards the camp and scrathes the fuzz on his chin.

"Well Shiraz, what are the tactics?" the young monk asks with a sheepish grin. "Come on noble leader. Cat got your tongue?"

The fact that you cannot sneak past the orc guards unnoticed just confirms that distractions are necessary. She listens to the gentlemen discussing the icespikes.
A Fuller View (DM/Al) d20+9=10 d20+9=22 d20+9=20 Tuesday August 31st, 2004 11:24:25 PM
The nearest opening in the ice spikes is some 400 to 500 feet away. Any closer and all this talk might be heard. Even then, you're not sure that it isn't heard. The distance is also necessary in order to avoid being seen.
Hunkered down in your scant cover, you continue discussion.
Snow continues to fall, but through the large falling flakes, you estimate that the gap between the spikes of the nearest gate is about 15 feet. The orcs in the camp seem to have piled up snow and ice between spikes to build make-shift walls. They look pretty solid. And reasonably slick. They are about 7 feet high. (INT check vs DC15 and you realize that a Create Water spell cast over a jumble of loose snow and ice boulders might make quite the effective wall.)
Through the falling snow and distance, you notice various wanderings in the camp. Figures moving about.
Jason of Aisildur d20+1=20 Wednesday September 1st, 2004 7:23:58 AM
"I am at your disposal Shiraz." Jason says, bowing slightly to the large minotaur. The paladin continues to observe the scene around him. Suddenly he realizes something.
"You know, if a spell were cast to create water above those snow boulders, it would result in an excellent barrier, solid ice likely." he suggests.
(INT check DC15 = 20)
Shiraz Wednesday September 1st, 2004 7:46:20 AM
ooc Sorry, full explnation on LnB.
Shiraz listens to his companions, "Lets attack one group, quietly and efficiently. if we take out one and move as a group towards the tents we are safer and have the ability to defend each other with magic and weapons. Fire teh tents as we move forward, that will cause their forces to be trapped between fighting us or saving the tents. We have talked this to death." Shiraz reaches over to Niobe, and pulls her close, "Sorry, for being so forceful but here," Shiraz slides his gauntlet off and places a small ring in Niobes hand, "I need that back but you can use it to get a bit closer without being seen. Let us fight, you stay hidden and begin freeing the captives when the orcs attack us." Shiraz adjusts his weapons and pulls his shield out. "We ready?"
ooc Shiraz handed Niobe his Ring of Invisibility
Sly and Luke d20+3=17 Wednesday September 1st, 2004 7:54:34 AM
Sly answers Jason's suggestion, "I like that though, too bad I don't have a water spell, just fire and acid spells."

Luke "Yes!".
Niobe d20+17=28 d20+14=26 Wednesday September 1st, 2004 6:50:21 PM
Niobe is pulled over as if she weighs nothing by Shiraz. Hurriedly she answers Minotaur's apology lowly, "uh, no problem..."
The thief looks the ring over carefully as she listens to the part of Shiraz's plan that directly concerns herself. Luckily she immediately picks up on what the ring should do and what she is expected to accomplish while the others take on the 'orc hordes'. She places the ring on her hand (does the ring auto work or does she have to say some word or other?).
"Will do. I make haste to get to the captives, and you will get your ring back as soon as this mess is over. I am ready when you are."
((I made an Int check (28) and a Wis check (26) just to make sure that Niobe had a good idea of what Shiraz's ring (on loan) was; and of course to make certain that she does accurately pick up on what Shiraz is indicating that the ring does.))
Ilsidur Wednesday September 1st, 2004 8:03:52 PM
The dwarf wraps the white wolf cloak around himself, and says, "I like the direct approach, Shiraz. We head directly for the closest opening, getting as close as we can, and then charge when we are spotted. We follow the well-worn path, so that we don't step in any trap-holes. Remember, I have two teleports, a short-range and a long-range, that we can use to move four of us around if we need to."
Then the dwarf draws his sword and readies his shield, and says, "I am ready."

Savin is glad to get to the action. "I will get there first and try to tie them all up so they can't sound an alarm. Please hurry after me!"
When the group moves out, Savin will initially stay with it. He looks at the ice towers to see if they have any guards in them who might spot them. (Duh should have thought of that sooner!)
When the party is spotted, he will fly ahead and attack one of the orcs trying to take them down quickly. First attack will be a stun attack. Hit ac 25. They need a dc 17 to save or are stunned for the round. Follow up strike is ac 25. Did 14 and 5 points of damage to one of them.

Shiraz speaks up. And the towering minotaur speaks decisively. All seems in readiness.
Meanwhile, Sly Foxx, with a watchful eye on the camp, notices that perhaps the activity has picked up a little. It's difficult to tell through the heavy fall of snowflakes, but it does seem that there are more figures moving about. And, just maybe, they move with an air of purpose that they hadn't a mere few minutes ago.
Shiraz eyes the terrain between their current position and the nearest gate. It's dead on ahead across about four to five hundred feet of ground with virtually no cover.

Jason of Aisildur Thursday September 2nd, 2004 5:47:09 AM
Jason moves cautiously with the others, toward the orc camp. He can't help but feel uneasy as he sees the enormous stretch of open walk ahead of them.
'They show great confidence in the Minotaur.' Jason thinks to himself, '...He strikes me as having a keen sense of the martial as well. I hope we are doing the right thing.' his thought finished, Jason lifts his shield to a position ready to defend incoming missile fire, hoping they do not have burning oil catapaults or the like.
"Courage among us my friends, for Domi is hear, and watches over us. Let honor and valor prevail as we smite our enemy and free those they supress!" he says, hoping his words will lift everyones spirits.

Shiraz eyes the expanse of ground through the thinkly fallig snow, stepping back into the shelter Shiraz grabs teh white furs that had been used against the group and steps back out into the snow. "Niobe you activate the ring like so, Shiraz taps his against his thigh. Now with your boots and the ring you should not be detected, could you go scout for us please?" Shiraz begins sorting out the furs, if we can hold these out in front of us, with a few holes cut for careful spying we should be able to close the distance as a group with less chance for discovery." Shiraz grabs the largest fur, "Jason," Shiraz looks at the paladin, "stretch that out please." Shiraz works his way through the pile quickly grabbing the largetst three. "Ok we will stretch these out, use them as moving camoflage. We need to move as a group and be prepared."

The furs are organized into a rough wall with Shiraz, Jason, and Savin, from right to left, holding them up before them. Ilsidur stands a bit back between Jason and Savin. Peerimus and Yorrick stay back as well, to the right - large bears hiding behind the large mass of the minotaur. Sly remains to the rear, peering around the wall formed by her companions.
Sly hears a shouted curse, muffled as though from within one of the tents. Savin hears it as well. It sounds as though it might be coming from the center of the camp. Neither of them, however, understands the language.
Savin hears another voice. The language is equally unintelligible to the monk. However, he does identify it as one voice. And it sounds like chanting. He also hears a rise in the half orc chatter. Unfortunately, again, he does not understand any of the conversation.
The snow continues to fall, large peaceful flakes. Vision is not the best. As Niobe proceeds, she sees the nearest gap in the ice wall some 400 feet ahead. The five orcs are still there. The sixth has not yet returned. They mill about a bit, but their attention is largely turned outward. One shades his eyes from the falling snow and stares into the distance. The rogue can almost imagine that he is looking straight at her.

Niobe Friday September 3rd, 2004 6:02:20 PM
Niobe will do her best to get past the orc guards. She is not working as a scout for the group because she is invisible (due to the magic ring). Her goal is to stealthily get to the slave tent and free the slaves (making sure that they have as warm clothes or blankets as possible). After freeing the slaves she will do her best to arm them with whatever is available to use as a make-shift weapons so they can help to facilitate their own escape. Naturally Niobe will head out in front of the rest, and either try to sneak past the guards (only if it is positive that she will not get caught at all), or wait for an opening to sneak in after the rest of the group start wreaking mayhem on the sentries.
A Cry In The Snow (DM/Al) Friday September 3rd, 2004 10:57:16 PM
Completely concealed by the spell of the ring, Niobe runs through the falling flakes toward the orc encampment. The rogue modulates her gait to mitigate the crunch of foot against snow, and with the special magic from her boots, she ghosts smoothly across the terrain. The raiding camp nears swiftly to within 200 feet.
The rest of the party hangs back, concealed behind their makeshift blind.
Suddenly, muffled though it may be, a bellow of rage and pain comes from the orc camp. Wordless growls of anger, and the distinctive grunt of weapons swung in rage follow. All hear it; sounds that any seasoned combatant would recognize.

Niobe closes in on the camp with satisfying ease. Once she is close enough she stops to listen and and pay attention to what is going on within the camp.
The thief clearly hears a bellow of rage and pain. She also hears what must be words though they have no meaning for her; since she does not understand any of the language being spoken.
'Sounds like a fight. Go on you brainless cretins, kill each other off. We could certainly do with a helping hand.' Niobe grins wickedly.
She stays where she is at to continue to watch what is occuring in the camp; if only for a little bit longer. Obviously she has the perfect observation place (nat. 20 on spot check). While observing the goings-on she draws a dagger in case she has a need to make quick work of a guard or such.

Peerimus [Bear] Yorrick [Extended Endure Elements, Greater Magic Fang] Sunday September 5th, 2004 9:25:53 AM
Peerimus and Yorrick continue to stay behind and just to the right of Shiraz as the group moves forward. At the cries, Peerimus issues a low growl himself and bumps Shiraz gently.
Savin Sunday September 5th, 2004 11:13:43 AM
Savin whispers to any who are listening, "My master used to say, there is a time for caution and a time for boldness. The wise man knows when to choose either. I think this is the time for boldness. The attention of the camp is turned inward and it sounds like they are torturing a prisoner. We need to charge and take out that gate."
Ilsidur (AC24, 98 hp) Sunday September 5th, 2004 8:53:40 PM

Niobe, far in advance of her comrades takes a moment to scan the terrain. At 80 feet out from the nearest gap in the ice wall, the guards out front are plainly visible, even through the falling snow. There are five. Four are orcs with the plain cast of the foot-soldier. One other, is larger, and, as she watches, it drops a command to the others. The fifth is a half-orc. All have bows at the ready. All watch carefully, eyes directed out in the direction from which the rogue had just come.
Then a movement catches Niobe's sharp eye. Something. Past the right ice spike that towers as a gatepost to the ice wall. Between two tents. There had been a movement.
A third thing she notices. Behind her, a trail of footprints. Her own footprints in the snow. Faint, and possibly undetectable to any save her own eye trained in both tracking and observation, but there none the less. And, when she turns back to once again face the orc camp, she notes yet an even more alarming thing. Another trail of footprints that come from the camp and head in the direction from which she had just left her companions. And, as she watches, more prints form in the new snow, each one before the next.
Meanwhile, behind, Jason strains his ears to pick words out of the bellowing that comes from the direction of the camp. He's sure the voice is an orc, but the words are lost in the distance. (Listen 14 vs. DC24)
Discussion is brief, decisions are swift, and actions even more so. The party as one surges forward, making their way with haste through the falling snow, charging toward the orc camp. Savin swiftly outpaces his companions. Peerimus and Yorrick, twin mountains of brown bear, barrel along at indomitable speed. Shiraz, Ilsidur, Sly, Luke, and Jason follow not far behind.
Niobe, from her point of vantage, notes that three of the orcs react. They begin a sharp whispered conversation, as though comparing notes on something they might have just heard. The footprints continue on past Niobe on her left. She can hear the crunch of snow beneath a heavy weight.

Niobe quickly assesses her situation. Does she keep quite and trust that her comrades can face an unseen; and unforeseen, ambush or does she risk "her own neck" and call out a warning?? What a quandry!
After a few seconds of internal debate she does what would be considered "the right" thing.
Niobe calls out very loudly "AMBUSH!!".
Then she promptly moves as quietly as she can; while trying not to make any obvious tracks, in a random pattern away from the location in which she called out from. Hopefully she will avoid attracting any archery fire towards herself with this steathly movement plan of hers.
Satisfied that she has done her duty by the others she quickly, and furtively checks for the tracks behind her and does her best to keep tabs on the guards still visible as well. Naturally she is now quite nervous.

The main body of the party barrel along toward the orc camp - Shiraz, Jason, Ilsidur, Sly, with Luke running loyally at his heels.
Peerimus, slow's somewhat. He drops back and to the right. Yorrick, steam issuing from his mouth with every breath, runs at his friend's side.
Savin is the next to spot the prints in the snow. He gives them a wide berth, passing them, as they, in fact, pass him by as well. The seemingly ignore the monk and move further out toward his approaching comrades.
"AMBUSH!!!" Niobe's voice rings from the gray snow filled air. She dodges in an evasive pattern, ending not far to the right of her previous position. But who would notice?
"We have some invisible foes heading our way! Watch for the footprints! Can anyone make them visible?" Savin shouts back, echoing Niobe's warning. Who would notice? Savin does. In addition to the larger footprints making their way out from the camp, the monk spots smaller prints, laying down in an erratic pattern not too far from him, clearly Niobe.
"HUKH WARH!!!" an orcish voice cries from the direction of the camp. The dialect is a bit unusual, but Jason translates the orcish words as 'Alarm'. Heavy nuances of both 'Attack' and 'Defend' fill the phrase, but who has a mind for such details at a time like this? "Hukh Warh!!!" Another cry echoes the first.
Both Savin and Niobe spot two more figures coming around the outside of the ice wall from the north. Two more on top of that come around the ice wall from the south.
Two arrows fly toward the monk. (Hit AC26, Dmg 6hp & AC28, Dmg 9hp) Clearly he's been spotted by someone.

BTW, please do not assume an automatic success or failure on Skills. There is some debate as to whether natural 1's and 20's are auto failure and success outside the realm of combat. I personally apply the rule on a case by case basis when dealing with Skills. My approach is backed up by Page 63 of the PHB, "Skill Checks." Please do not assume an automatic success or failure on Skills. You may fail on a roll of 20. You may succeed on a roll of 1. It depends.

Now that the other have been warned she carefully makes her way closer to the "gates" of the orc camp. She does her utmost to leave no tracks; or at the least even fainter ones than earlier. Niobe continually scans the area for the progress of the rapidly amassing orc guards. She is not happy that there are at least four more approaching. The thief will sneak as carefully as she can towards the gateway; still trying to leave as faint as possible tracks - or no tracks at all, when she gets close enough she will wait for an opportunity to sneak into the camp. Niobe will take precautions to not get bumped into or stepped on by any guards. (Either by keeping some short distance or by taking cover near some natural feature that the guards don't go near.)

Savin and Niobe approach closer. Along the front of the ice wall and between the gates, a mix of orcs and half-orcs has massed to repel the invaders. (Map to Niobe and Savin. Map reveals results of Savin's Spot Check.) All of them are armed with bows.
Niobe goes undetected. This is largely because Savin is now easily seen by several of the bow wielding orcs, and their attention is diverted exclusively to him. Surprisingly, though, as near as he has come, only three more of the defenders see the monk through the falling snow. More arrows fly the Monk's way. Meanwhile, Ilsidur channels the power of his god. A large half-orc is revealed to his sight 30 feet in front of Shiraz and Jason as they continue forward. The half-orc stands waiting. In its hands it holds a long chain made from the vertebrae of a marine animal. The end of the chain swings back and forth as though in patient anticipation.
Ilsidur quickly whispers both description and location.
Neither Sly, nor anybody else seems to hear the whisper. Instead, the fighting wizard looks for the source of the arrows that had targeted his companion, Savin. They must have come from the direction of the camp as he did not see any movement closer. He holds his spell as he is still too far away to strike any of the defenders at the orc camp.
Peerimus, on the other hand has no such problem. As he stands with Yorrick bellowing the challenge of the wild, a streak of lightening cuts the snow filled air and strikes an orc who had stepped forward for his shot at Savin. As the bolt drops from the sky, the orc makes a panicked leap backwards. But not far enough. It jumps and shakes as the electric charge surges through its body. (Reflex 16: Failed)

They get 30 feet before something snakes out of the air to wrap at Jason's bastard sword. (AoO/Disarms at DC48)
A large half-orc with a long bone chain becomes visible. And, with startling reflexes, the weapon cracks toward Shiraz's weapon as well. (AoO/Disarms at DC39: Don't forget to add 4 to your roll if your weapon is large, Shiraz.)
Three more flicks of the half-orc's wrist send the chain at Shiraz himself. (To Hit AC38 [Crit at AC36], AC15, AC6, Possible Damage 10hp/12hpCrit, 11hp, 12hp. Note: You don't usually get Dex to AC if you're Running.)

She is focusing on her "mission", and she has confidance that the others will prevail over the orcs.

Ilsidur (AC 24, 98 hp, True seeing) Thursday September 9th, 2004 9:22:05 PM
Ilsidur realizes the threat from the half-orc, and calls out, "Peerimus, you and Yorrick need to come back and fight this one! His best trick is to disarm, and obviously, that is no issue for you two! Charge him if you need to!If you can grapple him, you can take that weapon right out of his hands! The rest of us will continue ahead and keep the regular guards at bay."
Then the cleric moves about 20' forward (making sure that he is at least 15' from the chain-weilding half-orc) and casts a hold person spell at the half-orc. [OOC: Half-orc needs to Will save vs. DC17].
Jason of Aisildur d20+15=16 Thursday September 9th, 2004 10:59:56 PM
Jason is shocked as he watches his bastard sword fly out of his hands at the end of a metal chain. Then suddenly the attacker appears. Jason immediately dives to the ground, does a summersault, and when he comes back up, he immediately grabs his Mace from his side. He then moves to the attacker as quickly as possible, but keeps his weapon behind his back until close in on the beast, learning from his first mistake.

Sly moves in on the now visible half-orc. He brandishes his sword, the fire within waiting for release.
The white furs fall from Shiraz's hands as, in a critical mistake, the half-orc assumes they hide weapons. He is wrong. The Minotaur draws, and the snow darkens with half-orc blood.
Ilsidur calls for Peerimus to return and engage the half-orc. He, himself, moves forward and directs the power of his god, willing the half-orc motionless.
Jason rolls away five feet, and draws a mace. He stands outside the range of the chain, having learned his lesson.
++++++++++
Peerimus returns to the ground. His powerful bear form lumbers forward with Yorrick at his side. In a voice of the wild, he again calls on nature, and flame pours from the sky.
When the flame retreats, five figures remain steam rising from charred flesh. They remain standing, but just barely. They stand, in fact, in a pool of swiftly cooling water, melted by the intense heat of the divine blast. There is a quick scramble to climb from the water. (They lose their action this round.)
++++++++++
Niobe faces a line of bow wielding fighters that span the gap between the ice spikes. Suddenly, a column of yellow green fire makes it's fierce mark from the sky. When it clears, a 20 foot wide pool of water remains. The orcs and half-orcs scramble away. Still though, is this the time to enter?
Savin deflects one of the arrows and is hit by two more. He sprints north to attack an orc hunt leader and a half-orc fighter. He delivers a stunning blow to the hunt leader. Hurt, the orc hunt leader still shrugs off the blow. (Fort 22)
++++++++++
High above, five air elementals look down on the battle.
++++++++++ ++++++++++
Bleeding from critical wounds, the Large Orc grits it's teeth and shakes off Ilsidur's spell. (Will Save 17) Its eyes move from Shiraz to Sly to Jason to Ilsidur. Its lip curls in a leer before it turns and withdraws to the Southwest. (Withdraw 60 feet.)
As the guards burnt by Peerimus's heavenly fire scramble out of the pool of water, three more figures emerge from behind nearby tents. They all begin chanting and moving their hands. Two of them clasp holy symbols.
The orc hunt leader, recently struck by Savin, drops his bow and draws a bone axe. The half-orc drops a long bow and draws a long sword. He takes a five foot step forward. Both level blows at the monk. (To Hit AC29, AC18, Damage 17hp) As the weapons swing toward him, Savin spies two more fighters appearing from further north.
Arrows fly again from the orcs to the south. This time two fly at Peerimus, and two at Yorrick. (To Hit Peerimus 2Range Inc AC27, AC18, Damage 8hp, 5hp. To Hit Yorrick 2Range Inc AC18, AC21, Damage 8hp, 4hp.)

Peerimus hears Ilsidur and looks over to the retreating enemy leader. Taking him down would be a great demoralizer. Then the three enemy spellcasters appear and begin spells as well as two more stinging arrows from the south and Peerimus knows he would never get close to the leader before being cut down. Hopefully the other can pour some range fire into him or at the range fire they are facing.
Perrimus and Yorrick continue thier choosen path again shying farther from the southern archers and closing towards Savin and the northern group by 40'.
Instead of a thundering roar, this time the gray white bear rolls a deep baritone note across the ice fields towards the enemy casters.

Niobe Saturday September 11th, 2004 3:45:50 PM
Niobe will move to the ice spike to her right (as she faces the camp). She will stay right next to it (very close) and wait for the water to solidify; since the water cannot be crossed until then. If there had been a way of squeezing past the water pit without falling in she would have tried that. Climbing the ice spike with her rope and pitons is too risky and dangerous so she drops that idea of gaining entry to the camp immediately. With her appointed mission still firmly in mind she will bide her time, and scope out the orcs on the other side of the water. She pays close attention to the spellcasters.
(Judging from your map Al there is no way into the camp past the pit of water; as it takes up the entire entrance.) (Niobe is staying very close to the ice spike nearest to OL1 and O02, she will be as close to the waters edge as she can get with out causing any snow or ice to start sliding in; so the ground will still be firm under foot.)

Savin holds his ground. His hands move lightening fast. The orc hunt leader (OL4) takes three quick blows and stands stunned, unable to act. (Fort 16 vs. DC17)
Niobe moves forward to the edge of the pool of water. She is cautious. Is there some reason that the raiders have scrambled out of it so quickly?
++++++++++
Sly points at the large half-orc with the chain, and three bolts of light fly from his fingertips to strike the fleeing target. (10hp. I took your roll from before, Sly.)
Jason swings at the orc with his mace, catching air as the half-orc flees. A being with no honor will rarely stand and fight.
++++++++++
Peerimus and Yorrick move in Savin's direction, Peerimus growls and casts a spell that blankets the area around the gap. None of the orcs react. (Which doesn't mean that nothing happened. But I'll tell you that you only got two spells. And the orcs that they effected never noticed the difference.)
++++++++++
Firn'gaer observes the fight from the air. As a group of five air elementals, there is absolutely no where he can land within 100 feet and not be observed. With all of the arrows flying through the air, he stands a good possibly of even being attacked. Instead, he chooses to land in the spot most recently vacated by the two great bears. Those who oppose the orcs are nearby. And it appears relatively safe.
The air elementals land. Four of them fade, and the two that remain take on the form of a tall lanky man with a rat.

Some of the raiders that had been clustered in front of the gap run off. Perplexing, until you realize that these are the ones that have been in the water.
The remaining orcs maneuver for a better position from which to cast spells into the melee to the north. (HOM, OLC)
Meanwhile over 100 feet away, the large orc with the chain (HOL) gulps a potion then retreats straight back toward the camp another 30 feet.
The pool of water is visibly shrinking, the outer edges whitening to ice.

Niobe watches as the water quickly solidifies to ice. Instinctually she knows that the orcs were avoiding the water for two reasons: they didn't want to get trapped in the ice and becoming wet in a frozen environment can be a death warrent. The jumping and sliding across the newly formed ice surprises her. She finds that orc to be somewhat stupid for rushing across in that manner. If the ice seems thick enough to hold her weight then she will inch her way across it slowly; still remaining very close to the ice pillar. Once she is across she will make her way toward what she thinks is the prisoner tent. Niobe will walk where others have before to make her tracks less noticable. However she will stay close to the edges in case there are orcs walking around. It just wouldn't do to get bumped into.

Niobe creeps into the heart of the Orc Raiding Camp. Just ahead of her, an Half-Orc retreats through the narrow path between tents. A clearing opens before the rogue revealing a large bonfire before which the half-orc is trying to warm itself. The opening to the large tent is on her right, and she turns toward it.
Lifting the flap, Niobe peers inside, and is met with the smell of burning hair and flesh. Instead of slaves, however, there is only a single orc. Horrible burns cover the greater portion of it's body blackened and charred. It sits on the floor unable to rise, apparently anchored down by the weight of it's own equipment.
++++++++++++++++++++
On the Northern Front, the Orc Hunt Leader dances like a broken puppet as blows from both Savin and missiles of light from Sly Foxx pummel it's body. It drops, dead before it hits the snow.
With a roar from his druid friend, Yorrick pulls a switch. He breaks from his grapple with the orc and moves on the Half Orc. (Note the change.) Peerimus himself now rains tooth and fang down upon the weaponless orc. Raked and battered it drops to the snow.
Luke runs toward the fray, but not so foolishly as to arrive and take a blow.
++++++++++++++++++++
On the Southern Front, the tall thin mage draws a scroll from his pack. Another ball of fiery death trails flames through the snow filled air. Only three orcs are caught in the blast this time. The one with the chain (HOL) rolls toward the gap, avoiding much of the blast as he goes. One of the clerics (OLC) avoids nothing. The skin of it's face and hands bubble under the charring heat. When the ball of flame consumes itself with a sound that rends the air, a lone body lies at the edge of the melt water. (O05)
Ilsidur moves across the snow and casts a spell. Instantly he swells in size. The sight is incarnation of Divine Might set against the explosive backdrop of Firn'gaer's Fireball.

Faced with the mighty bear, the half-orc fighter (HO3) quakes. Still, he swings his long sword and makes a valiant attempt to take Savin down. (To Hit AC19, AC8)

The clerics chant. Three white apes appear in the snow. Two leap at Peerimus, and join the grapple. (DC15, DC25) The third takes a swipe at Luke. (To Hit: AC11, Damage 9hp)
The Mage (HOM), looks at Firn'gaer in the distance. He raises a hand, and returns the fireball, catching both Firn'gaer and Sly in the blast. (38hp Reflex vs DC17 to take half)

In Cold Water (DM/Al) Friday September 17th, 2004 3:03:04 AM
OoC: Firn'gaer and Sly are now in a pool of water. Sly with his Cloak of Comfort *might* be ok if he scrambles out. But Firn'gaer, even if he should get out this round is probably in a lot of trouble.
At first, the water is warm, heated by the departed fireball. You have the distinct feeling, however, that this will change very quickly.
Jason, Shiraz and Sly all note that this newcommer has NO warm clothing what so ever.
Sly and Luke d20+5=18 d20+5=25 Friday September 17th, 2004 9:38:28 AM
OOC: Sly made his reflx save of 18. DM if Sly and Firn'gaer are near each other in this puddle, Sly will grab him and pull him to safty to grab 25.
At this point nothing supprises him when it comes to Orc. Sly in reflex will grab this stranger and jump out of the puddle. But when they are both out of the water(which is turning to ice real fast), Sly look to the stranget to thank him for the help. To Sly's horror the stranger is not dress for this kind of weather.
Sly takes the Ivory and Gold snuff box and opens it. The snuff box turns to a Ivory and Gold Chest, he tell the stranger "In the chest there is a set of winter clothing, put it on quickly before you freez to death. When your finish take out the Ferritt statue, be careful It's curse, when you have time close the chest and give me the statue and the snuff box."
Sly will now go to Savin side.

(OOC:Sorry for the late post here everyone. If I happen to leave out anything then please drop a note here. I'm running a nasty fever tonight and if I miss anything it is 100% accident. Thanks for covering for me yesterday Al.)
Ilsidur attacks and injures the orc hunt leader badly but not enough to drop it.
Savin pounds the orc fighter nastily but it still stands and it shakes off the effects of the stunning fist.
Shiraz's attack on orc hunt leader who attack Ilsidur leaves the orc hurting much worse then before and also it bleeds badly from it's wounds. It still stands however.
Sly, succeeds in helping Firn'gaer out of the water and also helps him by giving the snuff box with extra clothes and such in it to Firn'gaer to help him out for the moment. (Sly will have to move to help Savin on his next post.)
Firn'gaer is out of the water and has taken a potion from his pouch to use? (You can change your post slightly if you like on your next post since Sly was able to help you out of the water.)
Peerimus moves off abit and shifts into the shape of a rhino which starts some of the orcs since they have never seen a armored beast like that before.
Yorrick attacks O12 and hurts it badly before grappling it. The orc shakes under Yorrick's great hug.
(OOC:Everyone who hasn't posted please state what your character was doing the previous round so Al can add it into his DM post Mon.)
OL3 sees no chance of possibly getting away with it's life so quickly swings it's great axe at Shiraz since the minotaur seems the biggest threat, biggest being the key word since Shiraz is taller then the dwarf. (Can hit AC:29/23 Damage:12/20)
OO6 and OL2 moves in and quickly attack Ilsidur now. Both orcs actually working in good unison which is suprising. (OL3 Can hit AC:21/11 Damage:9/12 OO6 can hit AC:12/17 Damage:12/9)
HO2 and HO4 move also to help fight against Shiraz and Ilsidur.
HO2 attacks Ilsidur (Can hit AC:22/24 Damage:12/13)
HO4 looks intent on Shiraz and is heading for him. Not quite reaching him yet.
O13 is moving to cetch Sly and possibly attack him. (Al, please clear this one up for me and/or edit the post. I'm not sure how far O13 is from Sly's current location.)
Al: Way too far. 013 moves in on Ilsidur and Shiraz instead.
O11 is quite frankly shocked to be turned loose of and is backing up now that a rhino has appeared on the field, clearly the orc has never seen a rhino before.
HO3 presses it's attack on Savin, hoping to take someone down before it gets killed. (Can hit AC:15/24 Damage:7/14)
OO7 watches as Yorrick grabs his friend up in a bear hug but quickly swings at the bear in hopes of getting him to drop his friend. (Can hit AC:23/7 Damage:15/18)
HOL stands ready after having drank it's potion last round, not in any trouble at the moment as it's goons are taking their toll on the group.
OO9 sees Peerimus as a great threat now and quickly fires an arrow at him as he frowns. (Can hit AC:22 Damage:6)
The two apes continue to try and grab Peerimus in rhino form, hoping to grab and hinder a leg or something so Peerimus may have to deal with them first. (Grapple DC's:8/8)
The third ape swipes at Luke again as it makes noises of irritation at Luke. (Can hit AC:13 Damage:10)
HOM grins proudly at the fireball he caused to hit Firn'gaer and Sly and awaits to see how they fair from that before doing to much more. He does look out over the field other wise to get an out of the damage done thus far.

Naturally if she decides to kill it she will take anything that comes across as valuable from it, especially anything that can increase the survivabilty of the Children in this hostile place and anything that can be easily converted into cash. The half-orc fighter (HO3) grins at the bloody, battered monk. It pulls back it's sword for the kill. Savin, however, is the quicker. A swift tattoo of blows beats the cold snow filled air followed by the sharp crack of breaking bone. The fighter stands dead, head lolling loosely to one side. Then it falls to the snow like a toppled tree.
Yorrick roars, and with a bat of the paw, breaks the grapple with the current orc (O12), and then bites down hard, ripping a chunk of flesh from the raider. A swipe with another massive paw snags the other orc (O07) and pulls it into an embrace.
The notoriously bad temper of the rhino-form, seizes Peerimus, and he charges madly at the archer responsible for his latest pain. (O09) One of the Apes (A3) makes a swipe with a claw (AoO) against the passing rhino before it scampers out of the way of the charging beast. (To Hit: AC19, Damage 6)
Fortunately, the druid regains control over his rhino-nature before entering the pool of water that spans the gap, not to mention, the sea of waving black tentacles that have suddenly appeared beyond.
(OoC: I'm not sure what you're trying to do here, Daniel, but I thought it best not to put you all the way through to the archer.
Also, please review the rules for Grappling. Once grappled an successful grapple check in place of an attack is required to break from the grapple. Either that, or an attack must me made to Pin the opponent. After that, the opponent may be released as a free action.)

The stalwart dwarven cleric eyes the situation around he and his minotaur companion. A wall of foes seems to appear where only moments before there was a scattered field of orc blood raiders. " ... lets even the odds a little, shall we?" he cries. His axe bites once, then twice. Orc Hunt Leader (OL3) remains standing, it's eyes turn in wide eyed disbelief at the bloody rents in it's armor. Then it crumples to the snow, bleeding away it's existence.
Shiraz winces at the blows he receives from the Orc Hunt Leader. But, before he can reply in kind, his dwarven companion pounds two mighty blows against the raider, and it goes down. Striding over his fallen foe, the minotaur rains steel and horn upon the next nearest assailant. (OL2)

With the help a half-elven combatant, Firn'gaer stumbles from the pool of water. The look on his face is dark with annoyance. Before responding to his newfound ally's offer of clothing, he pulls his magic around him, and sends a field of dark writhing tentacles against the raiders in the gap. The raiders within struggle to escape. (Grapple Checks: OMC-17-Fail-, 009-20-Fail-, HOM-30-Escape-, OLC-20-Fail-, and HOL-35-Escape-)
Some 30 seconds in the subzero cold of Ice Vein, and the wizard's fingers begin to grow numb. He can feel a tremble in his jaw. His lips have darkened to a black-blood blue. Worse still, the water in his clothing, so momentarily warm, has developed a frosty bite, and it is beginning to harden into heavy fridge crystals. (Firn'gaer, you are still without warm clothing. It will require a full round action to find something suitable in Sly's chest and get your arms into the sleeves.)
BTW, thank you for the times on the Active Spell list. It's very very helpful.
Sly pulls the statue from his chest, rubs it vigorously, and throws it as far as he can. It flies 50 feet, and lands with a spray of snow. When the snow settles, up pops the sleek brown head of a male weasel. The chill air fills with a heavy musk. The small sleak mammal charges across the snowscape, and gathering it's paws beneath itself, launches through the air. Impact! And a half-orc (HO4) stands looking down aghast as the weasel humps vigorously at his leg. Weasel jaws open to create a firmer attachment (Bite To Hit: AC12) The teeth do not sink, but the half-orc begins to scream anyway.
Meanwhile, for miles in all directions, the air is filled with the scamper of little feet, as female weasels converge on Ice Vein. Too bad they're so far away.
Jason rushes in, screaming a war cry in Orcish. His cries are rewarded by the attention of at least two of the orc-blood raiders.
++++++++++
Overcome by curiosity, Niobe creeps into the tent. There isn't much to see. The orc continues to try and heave itself up off the ground. Suddenly the tent flap opens once more, and the Half Orc Fighter (HON) who she had thought occupied at the fire comes running in. It's stomping around and slapping at the crystals of ice that have formed on it's body. The Half-Orc sees the Orc lying on the ground, and a short exchange ensues in Orcish.

On the Northern front, O07, now in the grasp of the huge brown bear shouts out in Orcish. The words drift to Jason, who translates the meaning roughly into, "Cowards! Weaklings! What are you doing! Attack the bear!" The orc who had retreated at the sight of the alien rhino, (011) is galvanized to action by his companion's insult. He attacks Yorrick. While O12, on his last legs, chops at the towering mountain of fur and fangs, an edge of panic it's voice. (O11: To Hit AC26, Damage 14hp /O12: To Hit AC12, AC11)
The two apes give up on the rhino and move in for more familiar prey. They lope across the ice toward Savin and attack. (A1 & A2 To Hit AC27 (AC9 NoCrit), AC23, Damage 9hp, 7hp)
On the Southern Front, long swords and bone axes continue to cut through the snow filled air. Two of the raiders move in on the paladin. "Ghk linbha huw shi nahhhr!" one cries. Jason stands ready as they try to make good on their threat to cut the tongue from his head. (To Hit: O14 AC22, Damage 11hp) But, before the half-orc can attack, a weasel flies out of the falling snow, and it's ravages throw the raider into a panic.
In a half circle five more raiders continue their assault against the enormous dwarf and the alien bull man. Long swords and bone axes find no purchase in their fur lined armor. Meanwhile, the water in both Sly and Firn'gaer's clothing begins to freeze. They both feel the chill of the hardening ice. (Add 10% to arcane spell failure.)

Savin 10 hps out of 76 ac 23 Savin has the diehard feat d20+7=19 Monday September 20th, 2004 11:17:08 PM
Savin takes the two vicious hits from the apes and decides it is time to get out of this battle for a while.
He tumbles past the apes (tumbling 19 which doesn't draws an aoo)and flat out runs away for 60 feet straigth east. He will then use his wholeness of body feat and cure himself 18 points of damage and start digging for some potions.
Al: Savin, in the PHB it says that using a Supernatural Ability is a Standard Action. Under the Diehard feat, you are only allowed either a Move Action or a Standard Action, not both. Wholeness of Body, unfortunately, is a Supernatural Ability. You must wait till next round to use it.

They'll be thousend of females weasel from all around here, it will last for a day and a night. In the morning the statue of the Weasel will return to me. I'm the cursed one, but that statue has gotten us out of deep trouble before and I hope it will do it again. Now try to get into that big tent in the center of the camp sight." Sly is felling chilly as he puts his gloved on but not before the stranger(Fun'gaer) had seen his tatoo of the Children of Chaos, but now Sly has nothing left of the extra clothing, "I will go as far as I can before I drop." Sly will advance as fast as he can and do as much damages before he freezes into a ice statue.

The axe of the towering dwarven cleric cuts a path of fiery retribution. An orc hunt leader gurgles (OL2) as fire and blood run a streak across the front of it's chest. Then it falls, face down, in new white snow. The back swing from the dwarven axe arches over the neighboring orc to descend on the unlucky half-orc (HO2) to the north. Its arm, cleaved cleanly from its body, does not bleed in the wake of the burning blade.
Jason returns blows as good as he gets, and the orc who struck him (O14) rocks on it's feet from the two mighty swings of the bastard sword.
++++++++++
Firn'gaer pulls on the warm coat from Sly's magic box. Heavy ice crystals still weigh down his clothing. The problem of heat loss is mitigated for the moment. But the Firn'gaer's clothing is yet filled with ice. (Take 2hp subdual damage. You are also still under a 10% spell failure penalty from hampered movement.)
Sly imagines that he hears the scampering roar of herds of female weasels in heat! Truth be told, they are coming. But they are very far away, and won't be here for several weeks. A shame that weasels are not native to Ice Vein.
Still, the stalwart Sly rushes across the snow to Savin's rescue. His magic cloak protects him from the cold. And yet, the ice that clings to his clothing is still heavy and cumbersome. (Add 10% to Arcane Spell failure.)
The back of Sly's hand begins to tingle.
++++++++++
Even gravely wounded, Savin dives between the two apes and rolls to his feet beyond. Moving at blinding speed he retreats to a spot 50 feet from where he was but moments ago. The apes stand momentarily dumfounded at their prey's disappearance.
OoC: That's a tough call Savin. It looks to me that you have to tumble directly between the two Apes to escape. That requires a DC of 25 not 15. But, I'll let you have it this time. Tumbling rocks. BTW, tumbling is half speed. So, for the 10 feet or so you have to clear, that eats 20 feet of your movement.
Peerimus lets loose a rhino cry, and a jagged bolt of lightening jumps through the falling snowflakes. The attacker of his dear friend is struck (O12), and dances electric death. The smell of ozone and burnt flesh fills the air. Yorrick, mighty bear, continues to maul the raider in his grasp. (O07) The bear crushes and rakes until the limp form falls, unmoving, to the snow.
Peerimus joins his friend over a pile of raider bodies, awaiting the end ... together.
Luke snaps and growls, then lunges for the large ape's throat. The ape reels back, bleeding from a terrible wound.
++++++++++
Inside the Large Tent, Niobe continues to watch as the two raiders jabber back and forth. At one point the Half-orc (HO1) becomes very agitated and looks back toward the tent flap. Finally, it pulls the orc to it's feet. The orc totters on unsure legs, then falls again to the carpeted floor.
++++++++++ ++++++++++
On the Northern front, the lone orc (O11) cowers among the dead bodies of his brethren. A rhino, a bear, three apes, and a dog. Around him stand nothing but Animals. Unscathed, but thoroughly unnerved, he flees.
The two summoned Apes, however, are driven by more primal instincts. They cry out and bound across the snow, baring sharp canine teeth. One attacks Peerimus. (A1: To Hit AC20, Damage 9hp) The other attacks Yorrick. (A3: To Hit AC23, Damage 6hp)
The Ape (A2) locked in with Luke screams in rage and retaliates with the swipe of the claws. (To Hit: AC9, AC27 (Crit at AC17), Damage 8hp, 10hp)
On the Southern Front, in a tit for tat the orc raider (014) swings its axe again at Jason. (To Hit AC22, AC13) Both swings miss. The weasel continues to hump at the half-orc's leg. It tries again for a bite. (To Hit AC16) The half-orc (HO4) divides it's attention, it's sword swings at Jason, while it's off-hand slaps at the weasel on it's leg. (To Hit Jason: AC14 / To Hit Weasel: AC19, Damage 7hp) The swing misses Jason, glancing off his shield. The weasel, on the other hand, is flattened: by the other hand. It falls away returning to it's form as a statue.
Two opponents each take on Ilsidur and Shiraz. The shift to flank flanking positions. The half-orc fighter (HO2) swings his sword and the orc (O06) his axe. (To Hit Ilsidur AC21, AC10, AC26, AC19) The blows rain, but divine providence keeps the blades from the dwarven cleric's flesh. Two orcs gang up on the dark minotaur. (O08 & O13) (To Hit Shiraz AC23, AC13, AC26, AC9, Damage 14hp) Blows rain down on Shiraz's armor. One blow penetrates drawing dark blood.
Within the field of dark waving tentacles, the archer rolls away and escapes. The other two continue to strive against them. (Grapple Checks OMC 26 -failed, OLC 29 -Failed, O09 32 -Escaped!)
Raiders are dropping all over the field of battle. But at what cost? And what are the two that fled behind the tents up to?

Savin will heal himself this round getting himself back to the normal concious state. He will then reach into his handy haversack and will the potion to the top.
He will pull the lid off and prepare to drink the healing potion next round.
When he sees Sly running towards him, he will wave him away saying, "I am OK! Help Peerimus and Yorrick. They need it more!"

Once again, Ilsidur can't believe his good fortune at not being hit in the last flurry of orc blows. Either the gods are smiling on him, or the orcs are incredibly clumsy ... or both? "Bah, these orcs aren't worth our trouble!" he yells to Shiraz, "Let's finish them quickly, and get over to help the others."
Once again, he swings his now-large waraxe, and the blade bites deep into the half-orc that he wounded last round (HO#2). [OOC: Hit AC25 for 21+5, total 26 hp damage.

If the first swing DOES drop the half orc #2: Ilsidur turns and swings his axe at orc #013, trying to pull the creature's attention away from flanking his friend. The axe bites deeply into the creature's side. [OOC: The same rolls apply, totalling 54 hp damage to the new target.]

After surveying the field of battle, Firn'gaer fires a spell toward the northern conflict. (Spell Failure 38% Success!) The spell goes off without complications. Suddenly the snow around the two apes is that much lighter, the air is warmer, the ground soft and inviting. One of them briefly fights the pull to sleep, but both soon succumb, drifting to the ground in slumber. (A3 Will Save 4, A1 Will Save 16)
The mage flies swiftly over the snow leaving Sly's chest open in the snow behind him.
BTW, Firn'gaer, you may roll your own spell failure using the d100 button.

Savin takes a few desperate moments to pull himself from the brink of death.
Peerimus makes a heroic effort to cling to focus, as blackness draws down over his sight. He sends a second jag of brilliant light, and it strikes the Ape (A2) looming over the valiant Luke. (Reflex Save 16 -Fail) The ape smokes in electric death, and drops, charred and blackened to the earth.
Then the druid lays down with his dearest friend. All things having been shared in life, the pair share as well the descent towards death.
Peerimus, please roll stabilization for you and Yorrick.
Sly veers from Savin to Peerimus. His sword is drawn and ready. As the ape (A3) drops into slumber, Sly strikes a single mighty blow. The ape's head flies spinning from it's body a sleep from which it will never awaken.
Luke, deprived of his opponent, rushes to the next nearest, the sleeping Ape! (A1) Luke savages the snoozing primate, causing it to awaken.
+++++++++
With a quick shuffling step, Ilsidur moves from one foe to another. He strikes at the Half-orc, (HO2) and the force of his axe sends it flying to the cold white ground, a position from which it will never arise. Then with a mighty swing, Ilsidur cleaves through the chest of an Orcish raider. (O13) Its chest explodes from the force of the blow, raining bits of flaming flesh and bone across the fresh carpet of snow.
Blood dripping from beneath his armor, Shiraz pours a barage of strikes into one of his attackers. (O08) The orc grunts and jerks as the blows fall. He is dead well before his body falls away.
Jason steps up his attack. Now that the insane weasel-thing is gone, he has two active opponents. He presses the attack against the orc, whittling away it's life. (O14)
++++++++++
Within the Large Tent, Niobe watches the Half-orc (HO1) as it screams in rage at the Orc raider, (O01) fallen again to the floor. It berates it's full-blood comrade in universally offensive language, then fires a series of orders. The orc replies in tones of contrition. Then the Half-orc leaves.
The raider pulls a potion from it's pouch and drinks it. Then it begins unfastening it's armor. All of this from a prone position on the floor.
++++++++++ ++++++++++
The field of battle has thinned. The remaining combatants on both sides of the conflict stand amongst the fallen. The raiders hesitate. They falter.
Then a shout comes from a place just inside the ice wall. Jason and Ilsidur understand. It is a call to battle.
With a *pop* of displaced air, the Half-orc mage (HOM) suddenly appears to the south. Again the cry is raised, but this time from outside the walls of the raiding camp. The voice rings out clear. The words roar, "Attack!"
The remaining orcs are spurred to action. They attack.
O14 attacks Jason. (To Hit AC27, AC8, Damage 19hp)
O06 attacks Shiraz. (To Hit AC18, AC7)
H04 abandon's the paladin (drawing an AoO) to attack Ilsidur. (To Hit AC16, AC10)
Suddenly, the air is filled with the sound of whip-crack and a fierce tug pulls at Ilsidur's axe. (Beat a DC37 or be Disarmed, Ilsidur) And this time, the chain wielder does not become visible.
With a powerful wrench one of the Orcish clerics escapes. (Grapple Checks OMC 32 -Escaped!, OLC 27 -Failed)
From the direction of the camp, calls arise in response to the Leaders battle cry. From the North. From the West. And From the South.

[OOC: Al, I assume that the orc chain fighter is not enlarged, and therefore took the -4 epnalty for the size difference, since Ilsdiur is now large-sized? Also, please note that Ilsidur still has true seeing in effect, and has had it in effect all combat. Is there any chance that he would have seen the orc leader approaching?]
Ilsidur manages to hang onto his weapon [OOC: Rolled a 38 to beat the disarm check]. Since the disarm attack from the orc failed, Ilsidur responds, and tries to disarm the orc [OOC: Orc must make a check vs DC37 or be disarmed. Remember the orc is at -4 due to size difference].
Due to his true seeing spell in place, he easily makes out the attacking orc leader, and touches Shiraz, casting dimension door on the defensive [OOC: made the concentration check with a 28 vs DC19 for the spell, so no attacks of opportunity]. He transfers the two of them north, on the west side of the downed figures of Peerimus and Yorrick (on the opposite side of Ape#1, Luke and Sly).
When he arrives beside the downed druid and his bear companion, Ilsidur calls out, "Shiraz, I have bought you a couple of rounds! Do you have any healing potions? I need to heal Peerimus and Yorrick; they are unconscious and may be very close to death! Savin, you and Sly move to help Jason! Shiraz, finish off this ape with Luke, then move south as well. Wizard, you find that chain-weilding orc, and dispell the invisibility spell on him if you can!"
Al: a medium size character doesn't take a -4 penalty in a disarm. They take zero size bonus and you, as a large size take a +4 bonus.
And, most definitely would have seen it coming. But I can't think of anything more that Ilsidur could have done about it than he already has.

No sooner does the tent flap fall back on the departing Half-orc, than Niobe is on the move. She stands above the prone orc as it fumbles for a potion. She strikes, and a vial rolls from the orc's dead and nerveless hand.
Niobe is again visible.

Savin restores himself for the coming onslaught, then races to the rescue. He joins Sly Foxx at the fallen bodies of their druid companion and his faithful companion.
Ilsidur does more than hold to his weapon. He pulls back against the chain wielding Half-orc. (Disarm 29) The chain-like length of vertebrae falls to the snow. But the result is inconsequential, as in the next moment, the dwarven cleric draws on divine power to transport he and Shiraz to a temporary haven, gaining a moment's respite from the relentless attack.
Sly Foxx points at a seal on his leg and recommends that Ilsidur use it. He puts another fire spell into his sword, but he does not have one. The only spell he has left is one that casts a web.
You never posted that list of spells, Sly. So I'm going off of the one on your character sheet.
Luke growls as the Ape (A1) rises to it's feet. He seizes the opportunity, and lunges. And then he attacks again. (AoO To Hit AC20, Damage 9hp / To Hit AC23 (Crit at AC22), Damage 8hp, 7hp) The Ape falls back to the snow bloody and unconscious.
Sorry, I took the initiative to have Luke wake the Ape last turn by attacking him. So I thought I ought to take responsibility and follow through with things here.
Shiraz draws two potions, downing one. His wounds close, readying the minotaur for further battle.
Shiraz, juggling two weapons and two potions is a dicey proposition. Unless else someone knows of a solid ruling on this, I'll say that you either drop one weapon in the snow or only get one potion.
To appear in such a cold and far away place, only to die. Firn'gaer, soldiers on doing what he knows best. He removes a scroll and targets the area recently evacuated by the towering dwarf. The large Half-orc with the chain suddenly appears. He seems startled to suddenly become visible again.
Peerimus and Yorrick slowly continue to bleed both body and spirit into the fridged wastes of Ice Vein.

Jason stands fast as one opponent turns into three. His bastard sword sings through the snow filled air as he backs into a position of defense. His one consolation: That his foes look, if anything, worse than he feels.

The wielder of the chain, the Half-orc leader (HOL) shouts orders, pointing north in the direction of the invaders clustered around the fallen bear. He grabs up his chain again, and then bolts to the north with surprising speed; his target is the wizard.
The Half-orc Mage (HOM) moves north and intones a spell, a dark enfeebling ray jumps from his hand in the direction of the dwarven cleric. (Range Touch Attack: Hit AC27, STR drain 7)
HO4, O06, and O14 converge on the paladin and attack. (014 To Hit AC31, AC9, Damage 14hp / 006 To Hit AC18 / HO4 To Hit AC29, Damage 10hp)
Two more orcs rush in from the South.
Two appear in the North, one is a hunt leader.
The lone orc cleric within the mass of dark writhing mass of tentacles again fails to escape. (OLC Grapple 27 - Failed)

Savin sees Jason in peril and with Sly's cry to help him races towards the outnumbered paladin. Before he gets there, he leaps in the air and lashes out with a flying side kick at o14 doing 9 points of damage to it. (He hits ac 25)
He will land beside Jason and help guard his flank and say, "You looked lonely. Thought I would visit for a while."

[OOC: I won't be able to post on Friday so I'm posting it now.]
Firn'gaer sees the half-orc charge him. "In the name of Gargul, why me?" Firn'gaer gives himself some space from the enraged half-orc (free 5 feet away) and in a defensive fashion (defensive casting - DC34) he calls the only spell he can think of to save his life. Calling on his arcane power, "Barrius Indes'abical"
An invisible barrier, wall of force, forms between Firn'gaer and the half-orc fighter just infront of Firn'gaer.
[Wall of Force - 10 feet high and 90 feet wide with 45 feet to either side of Firn'gaer.]
[Black tentacles - grapple DC30, damage 10]
