A Righteous Quest

DM Bob & Carla
Friday November 12th, 2004 12:57:04 AM

Caerthon nods in acknowledgement of Bralin's summary. "Yes, three objectives, although I am interested only in the latter two, the first is a personal quest of the son for the father."

As the old paladin lays out his second map his head swings around and he looks at Andrath.

"What do you know of the undead?" he asks the rogue. "Have you encountered such evil? I know not if the undead walk in the dead zone, nor do I know what has killed the vegetation...but perhaps your warning deserves heed."

Caerthon returns his attention to the map of the Crimson Fort. The paladin points out the location of the breach in the section of outer wall just east of the main gate. "Used to be called Raven's Gate." he recollects to the group. "During the Dread Wars we fought the final battle inside it's walls. The stone must be porous for it has been stained by the blood of those that died and whenever the sun hits it's walls it takes on a dark crimson colour."

The dagger traces towards the east side of the inner wall to an area marked as the blacksmith shop. "There must be some way into the inner compound through here" he indicates. "I don't know how, but those we battled somehow escaped into the inner compound after retreating into the smithy. The inner tower is several stories high and it's dungeons have been excavated several stories below." he continues, "although getting in and out undetected will be a risky proposition."

The paladin looks about the party, prepared to answer any questions they might have. If none are forthcoming he bids them goodnight. "Get your rest. I'll accompany you as far as the ford tomorrow, but then I must travel north. Look for me after 2 days along the 'Paladin's Trail' that traces its way north through the hills to the west of the dead zone.

Lorth
Friday November 12th, 2004 7:43:44 AM

Lorth addresses Caerthon, "Caerthon, I beleive you said my father fell near the breach in the wall? I just want to make doubly sure where to look."

Bralin  d20+3=22
Friday November 12th, 2004 3:30:49 PM

Bralin considers Andrath's question concerning the undead.
[Knowledge (Religion) check - 22]

"The walking dead can be strong or weak. The strong ones steal life's essence with a touch. They have no vitals, so your flanking attack will not be effective, neither the stunning blow of Harvest.

Healing spells hurt the undead greatly.
Tis possible I can drive off the weaker.
But I possess no group protections against the greater."

Harvest  d20+9=28
Friday November 12th, 2004 3:41:25 PM

The Undead. Harvest brings the carved wooden eye from her pouch. She thinks on the various callings of Gargul.

"You have a camp in the hills?" she breaks from her musings and asks the paladin. "Perhaps more than one safe cache of food and equipment?" Over the map of the Crimson Fortress, the question that she does not voice hangs implicit in the rise of her sandy brown eyebrow. "It may be useful to know of such a thing."

She glances around the room for potential eavesdroppers. "It should also be useful to know the routes and areas in which your friends patrolled. That, and how we might know your friends should we come upon them."

Alkali
Saturday November 13th, 2004 12:40:41 AM

Alkali does what sleeping people do best.

Elerinn
Saturday November 13th, 2004 5:27:30 AM

Elerinn listens to the paladin and his companions and is becoming more and more fascinated with the upcoming quest, as Bralin calls it.
When the gnome sees Harvest holding something that appears to be Gargul's holy symbol, he observes it with interest. Elerinn asks her: "Miss Moon, is that the watchfull eye of Gargul you're holding? I hear d about people able to turn the undead with Gargul's divine help. Can you? Or anyone else here, for that matter?"

Andrath
Saturday November 13th, 2004 2:26:01 PM

Andrath says, "Thank you for your help and advice. Have you seen any sort of dangerous creatures that we might expect to meet, either on the way to the Fort, or while we are there? For example, when we were last in the Culverwood, we ran up against some trolls, and it sure would have helped to have had some oil on hand to burn the carcasses. Any advice that you can give us on how to prepare would be very helpful."

Once he has heard any advice from the old paladin, Andrath finishes his food and drink, and heads upstairs for a good night's rest.

DM Bob & Carla
Sunday November 14th, 2004 5:11:05 PM

The elderly paladin rests the tip of his dagger on the rough sketch of the Crimson Fort. "I've not been back since we defeated the Dread all those years ago, so some things may have changed, but the breach in the wall was where I last saw Kalith...where he fell. Where his bones may lie now is another matter. We did not find his body when we recovered our dead. I'm sorry..." Caerthon looks solemly down at the map, his eyes seem to glaze over as his mind travels back to those dark days when so many died.

The paladin is jarred back to the present when Harvest Moon asks of patrol routes, encampments, and the appearance of Hugo and Langdon.

"The hills to the west of the dead zone offer good vantage, and it was here that Hugo and Langdon were sent to patrol, but I have traced and retraced the area and found no signs of their passing. There are a number of defendable encampments along the trail", he points out general locations with the dagger.

"You will recognize them when you come to them for each bears our sign." The paladin indicates a small symbol on his chest in the shape of a single eye with a horizontal line above it. "It represents the 'watchful eye'."

"As for Hugo and Langdon, well they each ride a grey charger and wear breastplate similar to my own. Hugo is balding and has a terrible scar across his left temple that has left him without sight in that eye. Langdon is a taller man and not so heavy as Hugo. They both wear the 'watchful eye' as do I." The worry that Caerthon feels for his two friends is easily heard in his voice as he describes them.

Andrath's question causes the paladin to pause and reflect on what has and hasn't been seen. "In the past several months we have seen a growing number of orcs and goblins making their way into the desolation around the fort. There are also rumors of a powerful new commander that can inspire fear in even the most hideous of creatures. Some we have captured say that he was spawned from the lich himself, how I cannot say, but we defeated the lich during the Dread War and scattered his mages to the four winds. As for the undead, many were encountered during the war, but none have been seen since."

"Now, if you will excuse me. I must see to Tangiers before I retire." He leaves the maps on the table and makes his way through the door of the Inn. You catch a glimpse of him leading a huge black warhorse towards the stable behind the inn.

Harvest
Sunday November 14th, 2004 10:06:09 PM

Harvest Moon blushes pink when the gnome asks her about the carved wooden symbol.

"Yes, Elerinn Brazael, it is the Eye of Gargul." The brown girl holds her gaze to the symbol in her hands. Perhaps from reverence, but perhaps simply to avoid meeting the gaze of the others around the table. "Pasix, my master, had urged me to study of religion. I have some skill at turning undead," Harvest replies as though speaking to the holy symbol.

"I have some skill. But little practice."

The brown girl keeps her eyes down, but nods her head as the old paladin answers her questions.

"I must study," she says simply. Harvest bows to those at the table. Her eye roves for leftovers of the baked apple, but finds that she has eaten them all.

"Thank you for the extra desert, Andrath Silverhand," she says before retiring to her cupboard under the stairs.

Lorth
Monday November 15th, 2004 1:12:37 PM

Lorth listens to all the paladin has to say. If no one else has anything to say he retires for the evening, expecting to leave on the morrow.

Bralin  d20+5=9 d20+4=6
Monday November 15th, 2004 2:48:09 PM

The dwarf joins Lorth, preparing for an early day tomorrow.

"Need we mount a watch?" he asks the paladin. The question of deceipt among the City Guard still rumbles around the warrior's mind.

Assuming Lorth answers yes, Bralin takes the first watch, waking the paladin next.

Elerinn
Monday November 15th, 2004 7:17:13 PM

Elerinn nods as Harvest gives an unsure answer and says: "Every help is welcome, even if you're not really experienced in turning the undead."
After he has cheerfully wished Lorth, Bralin and Miss Moon a good night, Elerinn yawns. Suddenly a deep feeling of tiredness overwhelms the cloaked gnome as well. He retreats to the same room where he spent last night.
Unlike Bralin, the need for a watch doesn't cross Elerinn's mind. The Shadfly seems pretty save to him and besides that he is too tired to think otherwise.

Andrath
Monday November 15th, 2004 10:56:05 PM

Andrath thanks the old paladin, "Thank you for your advice, and the maps. We will do our best to find your friends, and to find out what is going on at the Fort."

After a busy day, Andrath makes his way upstairs for a night's rest.

Unless..."Harvest Moon," he asks quietly, "should we have one more look around town later tonight? Maybe we can swing by the cooper's shop, and see what happened to the barrels of weapons."

DM Bob & Carla  Spoiled rations d100=90
Monday November 15th, 2004 11:57:05 PM

Folks settle into their rooms. Andrath passes an uncomfortable night dreaming that he is at a banquet. The table groans with the lavish meal set upon it. Try as he might, he is unable to satisfy his hunger. In the morning, the elf awakes to find that his rat has got into his roommates pack and spoiled pretty much all of Elerinn's trail rations.

Downstairs the paladin Caerthon waits impatiently, pacing in front of the hearth. "Dawdling! Can't have dawdling. We've far to go before the sun sets on this day!" Without giving the assembled party much chance for breakfast, the man exits the Inn. Hildy rushes to the group and thrusts a sack of checked cloth out toward the group. "Take this for your trip. There's bread and cheese inside, and some pears and plums. 'Nuff for the day, I recon."

As dawn reaches pink fingers into the sky, the party exits the Inn and sees Caerthon stroking the forelock of an enormous warhorse. The huge muscled chest of the beast belies the animal's age, evident when dark liquid eyes with an opaque cast take in the party. A graying muzzle and well worn teeth provide further confirmation that Tangiers has seen many years. Several visible scars attest to battle experience. With a vigourous toss of head and flick of tail, the solid-hoofed animal signifies its restlessness to be on the move.

Lorth
Tuesday November 16th, 2004 9:02:51 AM

Lorth rushes downstairs early in the morning anxious to leave. He follows the older paladin out and hits the trail when everyone is ready.

Harvest
Tuesday November 16th, 2004 12:13:29 PM

Temptation calls to Harvest Moon as Andrath proposes a late night foray back to the Cooperage. She glances sidelong, as though at witnesses to her sins of thought.

"I am sorry, Andrath Silverhand," she finally replies, "I have neglected my studies for too long. I must attend to them this night while time is still available to me."

"I am sorry," she says again, and bows. "Please excuse me." She steps backward, withdrawing to her cubbyhole under the stairs.

Harvest spends a few hours in the light of the everburning torch, reading scrolls until her eyes can remain open no longer. Then, before bed, she cares for her injuries. Touching the cut in her forehead three times, she seals the wound until she can see no trace of it in the small steel mirror. (Burn all three cantrips for Cure Minor Wound 3hp total. Now at full hp.)

The next morning, the brown girl awakens spending time with the carved knot of wood that his her link with Lord Gargul. Then she emerges from the cabinet under the stairs.

"Thank you," Harvest bows to the halfling as the group is presented with bounty once again. In an unusual display of emotion, she bends to hug the halfling woman. "Thank you," Harvest says again.

All of Harvest Moon's worldly possessions are, as always, packed within the haversack upon her back. She walks into the Wold ever ready to depart.

Bralin (Sustenance)
Tuesday November 16th, 2004 1:19:49 PM

At dawn, Bralin spends his customary hour in contemplation of the sphere, praying for his standard choice of spells [on PC sheet].

He also takes a moment to activate a Wold Seal.
[Seal of Sustenance: Once activated, you function as though wearing a Ring of Sustenance. You require no food or water, and require only 2 hours of sleep to get the benefits of a full 8 hours. This seal lasts only for the duration of the module in which it is activated. This seal grants its power to the activator only.]

Following the impatient paladin, the dwarf eyes the charger with concern.
"I cannot keep pace with yon steed," he points out.

Elerinn
Tuesday November 16th, 2004 4:28:22 PM

When Elerinn wakes up after a restfull night, he notices the rodent nibling on the rations inside his backpack. The first thing that the gnome wants to do, is scare the animal away, but then he recognizes it as Andrath's familiar.

He looks at Andrath, who has already notices his rat's action. He can't help but smile and says: "I guess we need to buy some new rations before we leave for the Crimson Fortress, don't you think? You're rat must have been pretty hungry..."

After cleaning his backpack, Elerinn leaves the room and joins with the rest of the Swords of Light. At the Shadfly, he asks if the innkeeper sells any rations.

Andrath
Tuesday November 16th, 2004 9:38:43 PM

Andrath wakes to find his familiar helping his little rat self to Elerinn's rations. He reaches over and picks the rodent up, and looks him in the eye. "So, you are saying I forgot to feed you? And instead of gently reminding me, you chose to help yourself to my friend's food? That behaviour is unnacceptable. Next time you feel hungry, send me an image. If I don't respond, like say I am asleep, give me a little nip and wake me up, and then I will feed you. If you insist on going into other people's stuff without my or their permission, I will have to get a cage for you. Do you understand?" While he is talking to the rat, he is sending mental pictures to reinforce what he is saying. Finally, he takes some food out of his pack, and feeds it to the rat.

He looks over at Elerinn, and says, "I am sorry about your food. I will pick up some rations on the way out of town, to refill your pack. I am still learning how to deal with this little one."

Then he spends an hour or so reading his spell book, and preparing his spells for the day. [OOC: He will memorize Detect Magic, Read Magic, Mage Hand, and Shield (x2).

On the way out the door, Andrath also thanks the halflings for their hospitality, and passes Hildy a gold coin. "I am sure that this will be delicious road fare. Do you have any trail rations that I can purchase? I need about six days' worth." Assuming that Hildy has rations, Andrath purchases them, and passes half to Elerinn, putting the other half in his backpack.

Outside, he looks up at Caerthon, and then down at Bralin. "Caerthon, why don't you take the lead, 50' or so ahead, and the rest of us will follow. That way, you won't have to worry about any of us getting under your horse's feet."

Once on the road, Andrath walks with the rest of the party, but keeps his eyes and ears open as they travel north.

As he travels, he feeds bits of his food to the rat.

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday November 17th, 2004 7:51:24 AM

The party awakens and performs their daily rituals as Caerthon waits with growing impatience. "I will only travel with you as far as the ford. I must head further north on important business related to these troubles. Did someone remember to bring the maps?"

Hildy Horncroft rustles up a variety of dry and not so dry goods to replace spoiled and otherwise nibbled trail rations for the group. "These should last you a couple of days" she says as she hands off some packages wrapped in brown butcher paper. A handwritten label identifies the various packages as meat pie, sourdough biscuits, and cheese. There appears to be several days worth of food that must be apportioned between several backpacks.

Lincoln slips Caerthon a small silver flask for 'cold nights' and Hildy gives Harvest Moon a hearty squeeze. Both halflings wave to the group and wish them a safe journey as they watch them head north along the road leading to Strongwind Castle.

Lorth
Wednesday November 17th, 2004 8:12:45 AM

Lorth takes whatever food is offered to him and packs it away. He thanks Hildy then sets his sights on the road ahead.

Harvest
Wednesday November 17th, 2004 12:09:07 PM

Harvest Moon swings along at a brisk pace. The ground she covers with each stride is startling for such a small girl. There is a smile on her face. Meat pie, biscuits and cheese in their supplies. Fair weather. And the road.

An inn is nice. And she'll miss the little cubbyhole under the stairs. But, the road ... All of her life had been shuffling from place to place. No permanent roof over her head. Even with Praxis it had not been wise to stay in one place too long.

The road. The road was her home.

Bralin (Sustenance)
Wednesday November 17th, 2004 2:31:18 PM

As usual, Bralin takes up position at the rear of the group, falling into his customary long march technique - check backtrail and clear the mind.

Andrath
Wednesday November 17th, 2004 10:55:06 PM

Andrath makes his way along the road with the rest of the party, only keeping half an eye out for trouble. He watches the newer members of the party, to see how they shake out in the marching order. He says, "On the road, we can walk as a group. But once we reach the trails, and there is cover on both sides, I usually go ahead about 50'-100', and look for problems as quietly as I can. If I see something, I will signal the party to stop, and then we can scope it out and decide what to do. Harvest Moon, I imagine that you probably can do much the same thing, so maybe we can travel together, since two sets of eyes are often better than one."

As they move along the road, Andrath periodically feeds little bits of his rations to the rat.

Alkali
Wednesday November 17th, 2004 11:34:46 PM

Alkali takes his food giving a merry "Thank You" to the lady. He walks his place in the middle as Karee flies the sky.

DM Bob & Carla
Thursday November 18th, 2004 7:42:51 AM

The sun finds it's way above the horizon and the light pink fingers of dawn turn into whisps of high cloud. The party make their way north, Caerthon in the lead with Bralin in the rear. They pass a number of farms, some where the old paladin recieves a friendly wave, and others where they go by unrecognized or perhaps unnoticed.

While some converse about tactics and marching orders, most are occupied by quiet reflection and the tinge of excitement about setting out on a new adventure.

As they near the crest of the hill, the high stone walls of Strongwind Castle rise up before them. Guards man the gate and towers and as they pass a small patrol exits the fort and marches towards Magpie Crossing.

Bralin turns to watch the patrol depart and notices a small figure running towards them from Magpie Crossing.

Bralin
Thursday November 18th, 2004 8:28:21 AM

"Someone comes," Bralin calls out to the group, as he looks back at the scene playing out behind him.

Harvest  d20+9=23
Thursday November 18th, 2004 10:10:19 AM

Harvest Moon turns at Bralin Stoneminder's call. She puts up a hand to shade her eyes, peering down the road at the figure running toward them. (Spot 23)

Arminas
Thursday November 18th, 2004 10:50:41 AM

High above your heads an eagle makes a short dive, as it tucks its wings and rolls. Then suddenly, the great bird surges upward with a strong flap of its wings. Soon the bird is but a dot in the sky. Some may see it dive towards the approaching stranger, and then settle on his shoulder.

Soon, the stranger cautiously approaches. The elven stranger wears a cloak that matches the grays and green of the forest. Beneath the cloak you see dull, worn leather armor and the hilt of a sword. Perhaps the most noticable for those who are archers, is a finaly crafted longbow across his back. On his tunic is a blue badge, with the letters WLA upon it. The eagle once again a speck in the sky.

"Greetings, I am Arminas, sent by Gaylon of Jarlswolf." He looks toward the dwarf and touches is hand to the blue badge, and then extends it towards the dwarf. "I understand that you are in need of a guide for your quest. This country can be a dangerous place, and it will take more than one elf to keep these humans and a dwarf alive as they blunder through the woods." With this, he nods to the elf and says a greeting in the elven tongue. "I have been sent on a quest to help the paladin Caerthon. The quest is important, this I have been assured. Why a paladin needs the help of a simple ranger I'm sure I will find out."

Arminas then carefully examines each of the group members, with a carefully hidden (or not quite so) smug look as he locks eyes with the paladin.

Andrath
Thursday November 18th, 2004 11:10:58 PM

Andrath turns and watches the stranger approach. He sees the almost 3' tall eagle alight on the 5' tall elf's shoulder, and hopes that the eagle doesn't knock the elf to the ground. Apparently, the elf is able to keep his balance, and the eagle takes off again.

He grins at the reference to elves and woods, and says, "Well met, Arminas. I am glad that you are able to join us and help in our journey to the Crimson Fort. As for us elves keeping the rest of the party from 'blundering', I am afraid that I am as out of place in the forest as the rest. Here, let me show you the maps that Caerthon drew for us." He gets the two maps out of his pack, and shows them to the newcomer.

He looks up at Caerthon, and asks, "Are we planning to stop at the castle, or do we continue on?"

Once they are back on the road, Andrath continues to feed his rat.

Elerinn
Friday November 19th, 2004 6:50:34 AM

Elerinn looks at the approaching stranger with interest and smiles when the elf introduces himself and states his purpose.
In the elven tongue, he asks: "Are you willing to help a gnome getting out of this forest in one piece again, as well?"

The small sorcerer removes the cap of his diamoned patterned black and white cloak, revealing a curly mess of red hair.
He extends his hands and says, in the common language this time: "Hello Arminas, I am Elerinn. I am glad Gaylon sent you. We almost got lost in Wyrmsfut some time ago, so we can use a guide, I guess."

Lorth
Friday November 19th, 2004 8:17:37 AM

Lorth turns and looks at the new elf, when the newcomer switches to the elven language for private greetings he turns away unimpressed. "I suppose you grew up in this area and know all the roads and trails?", Lorth says over his shoulder.

DM Bob & Carla
Friday November 19th, 2004 8:20:13 AM

The party stops in it's tracks and welcomes the elven-ranger into their ranks. Caerthon dismounts and helps Andrath point out relevant features on the map. "I am Caerthon" he introduces himself to the elf, and your quest is now three-fold. Lorth is in search of his fathers remains at the Crimson Fort, I am looking for news of my friends Hugo and Langdon who have dissappeared while patrolling the border regions between the Valley and the Dreadlands, and you are to gather information about the goings on within the Crimson Fort. In particular, it would be good to know the numbers and kinds of troops being amassed, and their state of readiness."

When discussions are over, the old paladin remounts his war horse and leads the party past the gates of Strongwind Castle.

Bralin
Friday November 19th, 2004 8:26:21 AM

Touching his own blue triangle, Bralin takes Arminas' hand. "I am Bralin Stoneminder," he responds. "I possess sufficient skills to stay alive without aid," he adds in complete seriousness.

The dwarf wears plain black mail and shield, and carries a large war axe slung over his back.

Without further byplay, he turns and follows everyone up the road.

Harvest
Friday November 19th, 2004 10:08:09 AM

Harvest Moon's dark brown eyes are more for the large fierce looking eagle than the elf under it's claws. No taller than the elf himself, the small girl imagines what it might be like to have a bird over half as big as one's self rest upon one's shoulder. And yet they look so comfortable together. Harvest Moon's hair, boy-short save on top where it rises in a crest that arches over and down across her forehead, drops into her eyes. She raises a pale hand to brush it away. It would be nice to have a friend like that to travel with.

As the others offer introduction, Harvest returns to her manners. The wide cuffs of her large oversized robe fall back from her small hands as she brings them together. Left palm wraps right fist and she bows.

"I am pleased to meet you, Arminas of Jarlswolf. I am Harvest Moon." Her eyes stray once again to the large bird of prey and she stifles an urge to reach out and touch what she has only ever seen from afar.

As the party moves on, Harvest Moon drops into a place just behind the elven ranger's shoulder and watches the eagle. Each time it moves seems, in and of itself, a small miracle.

Arminas (listen 27, spot 23) and Ewan (listen 14, spot 23)  2d20(6+10)+6=22 d20+6=14 d20+6=23 d20+10=27 d20+10=23
Friday November 19th, 2004 11:19:06 AM

Arminas greets all the party in turn. As to the curious looks he recieves due to the eagle, who stands about half as tall as the elf, Arminas states "I suppose it does look a bit odd, but you really should not judge a creature by its size." Looking at Elerinn and Alkali. "Besides, she actually weighs little more than this sword" Touching the hilt at his waist. "You see, a bird has much of its bulk in feathers, and the bones are actually hollow. Its to reduce weight you know, makes them able to fly." Looking around at the obviously bored looks, except maybe for Harvest, Arminas stops himself. "Forgive me, I just find the creature fascinating." Arminas then smooths the feathers about the head of the eagle while whispering to it. He then makes a hand gesture up and forward along the trail, and the eagle takes flight. [OOC: I made a mistake on the roll, ignore the 2d20 roll. I am rolling listen and spot checks for Ewan, the eagle.]

Looking at Lorth, Arminas responds: "Well, I really am from the area southwest of here, near Merrydale. I've spent lots of time in the Culverwood, and if I can guide someone through there, well I figure that I can handle about anywhere. Although this deadzone will be a new experience." As Caerthon dismounts, Arminas looks between Lorth and Caerthon "I meant no disrespect, its just that in the past my intentions were misjudged by a paladin, but live and learn. So now there are three quests, one of which seems to be a very personal.(he glances at Lorth) I would also like to add yet another reason for this quest. The dead zone is a scourge on the land, if it spreads it will do more harm than all the armies combined. Let us find a reason, and if it is within our powers, let us put an end to this torment of the land."

Arminas looks toward Bralin, he looks the drawf over. "Yes, I believe you can hold your own. I only mean that sometimes in the forest there are things that are not so easy to fight, things that are seldon seen, and can be very misleading."

Arminas then looks to the war horse and paladin. "Typically I like to be in front, looking for tracks and possible danger, but I have no desire to be trampled, accidentally or otherwise. Ewan will be my eyes to the front, I will take the rear while we are on this road." [listen 27 and spot 23 checks]

Lorth
Saturday November 20th, 2004 12:47:54 PM

Lorth chuckles to himself when he hears Bralin's retort, what a great day it was when the dwarf joined our band he thinks.
Lorth resumes his following of the older paladin when he remounts his horse. If Andrath doesn't change the marching order or issue commands, Lorth has no problem with Arminas doing what he thinks is best.

Elerinn
Saturday November 20th, 2004 1:19:51 PM

Elerinn smiles as he watches Arminas and Ewan who is accompanying him. The gnome has to reassure the raven on his shoulder that the eagle is not a threat.
He doesn't share his familiar's suspicion about the strangers and is pretty interested in the elf and his flying companion. Elerinn likes the reactions the elf unleashes in his companions and smiles when Bralin is as stoic as always.
"I think you're reason alone would be enough justification to enter the Dead Zone! Let's go there now!", the gnome says in an enthusiastic high pitched voice.

Alkali
Sunday November 21st, 2004 10:08:21 AM

Alkali remains quiet and observant. Karee's head perks up as he sees the eagle. With the many birds in the group, Alkali begins to wonder. He looks up at the sky watching the clouds. What would it be like to fly?

Andrath
Monday November 22nd, 2004 12:23:10 AM

Seeing the ranger take the rear of the party, Andrath moves ahead to the front of the party. Sometime during the travels, he drops back to Bralin's side. He nudges the dwarf, and says, "After that fight in the cooper's, I never doubted that you have the means to keep yourself alive. So, what do you make of this newcomer? He seems a little full of himself. I thought that eagle was about to attack him!"

DM Bob & Carla

After introductions are made and the elven ranger is accepted into the group, Caerthon leads the troop north along the River Road for several miles. They march past farms and pasturelands interspersed with the occasional groves of fruit trees. The eagle spots nothing out of the ordinary. By late morning they reach a dip in the road and the old paladin reins his steed towards the river. A narrow cart path leads down the slope to the river bank.

The river is intersected here by an outcropping of hard rock, too hard for the water to erode. The outcrop confines the river to a series of small waterfalls and step pools. A single ridge of hard stone extends across the river, just wide enough for a cart to traverse. The water moves swiftly here, but is only 1 foot deep. A narrow cart path rises from the water and over the bank on the other side.

"Let us cross the river now" the paladin turns in his saddle and leans back on the rump of his horse, "you can rest on the other side and it is there that I will leave you".

[OOC a Dex check of DC 14 is required to safely traverse the river, failure by more than 5 will result in being swept into one of the deeper pools]

Arminas starts across the river (Dex roll 19), and stops as soon as he sees Lorth slip into the river and tumble down into the deep pool. If Lorth is able to respond, Arminas will say "Are you in need of aid, or can you swim?"

In the case that Lorth has sank, due to his heavy armor, Arminas will rush to the side of the river closest to Lorth. He will place his pack and weapons on the ground and take his 50 foot silk rope, tie an end to a tree and grasping the other end he will dive into the pool. [OOC: Swim check 9]. Knowing that the swift current has made swimming difficult, Arminas will hold to the rope and still try and get it to Lorth. If he is unable to do so, he will hold the rope as it pivots him to the bank.

Harvest  d20+5=23
Monday November 22nd, 2004 2:01:07 PM

Harvest Moon casually slips a coil of rope from her haversack as the group approaches the rushing ford. Her eye is still on the eagle soaring above.

A splash sounds, drawing her soaring mind back down to earth. This was not the reason she had drawn the rope. Rather, it is the reason she had hoped to prevent.

"Bralin Stoneminder," she calls out, "Grasp the other end of the line." Playing the length of silk rope as she goes, the small brown girl rushes to the shore.

"Catch!" Harvest shouts. Swinging the coil over her head, she throws the rope out to the paladin and the ranger. (Rope Use 23)

Andrath runs over and grabs hold of the rope with Bralin. He looks at the dwarf, and says, "Surely there must be a safer place to cross than here. Fully half the people trying to cross are likely to get washed in! Maybe there was some sort of rope support that we have missed."

Lorth feels his foot slip on the algae beneath his feet and without warning is swept into a deep pool of water immediately below the outcrop. Weighed down by his armor and equipment he is sent immediately to the bottom. [A swim check of DC 15 is required to make your way to the edge of the pool, a DC of 10 will get you to the surface for a gulp of air, otherwise you are holding your breath this round] Arminus watches helplessly as the paladin sinks below the surface and can only make his way to the other side of the river. [OOC full round to move 40' across difficult terrain].

Harvest, witnesses Lorth fall and acts quickly to throw the free end of the rope into the pool while Bralin and Andrath prepare for the possibility that the paladin will be able to grab the rope. [OOC If Lorth makes it to the surface he can make a touch attack to grab the rope DC 10]

Alkali feels for the lay lines beneath the surface of the cart path and prepares a spell, however, Arminus has already gone beyond his reach.

Elerinn makes it 2/3 of the way across the river, the water rushing past his waist.

Slow to react, Caerthon spurs Tangiers forward across the ford. The massive horse makes easy work of the distance and the old paladin reaches down and grabs the gnome by the collar as the horse plunges by. Elerinn finds himself deposited on the far bank next to the ranger.

The little brown girl watches as the others cross to the other side while the heavily laden paladin sinks beneath the water. On this side they stand, the halfling pulling power to himself and heading toward the departing ranger.

With a shrug of her shoulders the haversack drops to the ground.

"The rope, please, Bralin Stoneminder," she says, taking the end from him.

"Please tie this about me, Andrath Sliverhand."

Then, heedless of her nakedness, she pulls the oversized robe off over her head. As she works she speaks.

"Alkali Greenbottle, if the spell you are preparing will aide swimming, may I have it please? I will try to swim to the paladin with the rope. Bralin Stoneminder, as I go, you will have to play out the line behind me, and pull in the line that is already out in water."

"We should wait until the elder paladin returns across the ford with his horse. He can ferry the smaller of us across. The large of us can be tied to the rope and cross with at least that much safety."

Then, with the rope tied around her waist, Harvest Moon plunges into the water.

Strengthened by Alkali's magic, a rope securely knotted about her waist by Andrath, and secured by Bralin and the rogue, Harvest then swims with the current and reaches the middle of the pool just above the weighed down paladin.

Having deposited Elerinn safely on the other side of the river, Caerthon guides Tangiers over to Arminas. Grasping the ranger's rope, he ties it to the pommel of his saddle while Arminas cinches the other end about his waist and wades into the fast flowing water.

Swim down. Swim down. Get the rope into the hands of Lorth Jeradosta. Better yet. Wrap some around his waist and cling to his back. Tug the rope.

The slender monk is able to secure the heavy paladin and give the rope a tug, signalling the rogue and fighter that it is time to pull. The sinewy muscles of the elf bulge as he pulls the heavy paladin against the current, while the dwarf tries to anchor the rope. Lorth's head breaks the surface of the pool, followed shortly by that of Harvest Moon.

Noticing the success of the party on the far side, Caerthon urges Tangiers forward slowly, and the ranger, Arminas is brought ashore. "Brave effort lad," calls the paladin looking down from his mount. "Now how to we get those folks across?"

Harvest
Thursday November 25th, 2004 11:50:56 AM

Harvest Moon takes a deep breath of air as she breaks the surface, blinking away the cold water in her eyes. Only after rolling away and undoing the line from around her waist, does she cede to the needs of propriety. Turning from the eyes of the entirely male members of the group on this side of the river, she quickly scampers to where she had left her robe and pulls it up to cover herself. He hair, short as it is, fortunately does not retain much water. Still, squats down and shakes it out before pulling the robe over her head in a manner that allows for the greatest decorum.

The little monk speaks as she looks in at the paladin's face to ensure that he did not take on an inordinate amount of water.

"The river does not appear as wide as our rope is long. If we could get one end across, we could hold it at both ends and provide a hand-hold. With some extra rope, we might even fashion a safety line that could be tied around one's waist and threaded along the hand-hold rope. In this way, even should one slip, one would not be washed downstream."

Harvest waves across the river to the others, indicating that they are safe and well.

"They seem to have a length of rope there as well. There should be enough. The last person to cross could tie the rope about their waist, and cross in the knowledge that, even should they slip we could pull them to safety."

Arminas comes up backwards, dragged by the horse. Sputtering and coughing, he looks around. Upon seeing Lorth and Harvest pulled safely to shore, he says "Well, I see that you have rescued Lorth. I guess I will have to wait another day to be a hero." He looks at Caethorn "Thanks for being my safety line. I believe my rope will stretch across this river. Tie your end to this sturdy tree here and I will cross the river again. If I fall in, please pull me out again."

Arminas then walks carefully back across the river, leaving his possesions except for his clothing and a dagger with Caerthon. Once across [Dex check 21], he ties his end of the rope to a sturdy tree [use rope 11].

"I seem to be a bit shaky from me little swim. Could someone else check this knot and perhaps secure it well? Perhaps everyone should take off heavy armor and carry it across, so they will not be sunk? Anyway, if you hold to the rope, or tie yourself to it as Harvest suggests, then you should be safe. I'll go across last, with the rope tied to myself. Hate to lose a good rope."

Between Harvest, Andrath and Caerthon a fixed line is secured between two trees on either side of the river and all of the Swords of Lightmanage to cross. Bralin powers across the ford, his stature and strength being an easy match for the current. Andrath has a more difficult time but does manage the trip. When all have crossed, including the soggy paladin, Caerthon unties the rope and he and Tangiers make the last crossing on their own.

"Let that be a warning to you all, the wilds are a dangerous place, and armor is often as much a hindrance as a help." The old paladin speaks from experience. "Do not rush in to each situation, but think, and then think again, for often as not there is more than one way to skin a dragon...or cross a river."

The paladin scans the horizon for a moment before speaking again. "I suggest we make camp here so that you might prepare for the long march to the Crimson Fort. I will spend the night here with you before leaving in the morn"

Harvest  d20+3=22

Harvest Moon crosses will few difficulties. (Dex 22) She nods quietly to the sage words of advice from the elder paladin. It is a shame that he would not be traveling with them further.

As they would be camping here by the ford, the small brown monk sets to drying her hair. The short sides and back dry quickly, but the crest in front requires that some water be patted from it. The rope would need to dry as well, and then be packed away.

From the corner of her eye she watches these new people into who's lot she has thrown her own. Both Bralin Stoneminder and the quiet paladin seem to defer to Andrath Silverhand. It is perhaps he to whom she should look to for direction.

With a small unconscious nod of her head, she approaches the elf. "If you wish, Andrath Silverhand, I could take the first watch of the evening. Or, perhaps the last would be better. I do not see as well in the dark of night as an elf such as you would." Harvest bows somewhat formally. "I am at your disposal."

Bralin (sustenance)

Andrath
Tuesday November 30th, 2004 11:48:48 PM

Andrath manages to catch himself as he slips, but he holds tight to the rope, and makes it to the other side.

Once on the other side, he says, "Caerthon, we would be happy to spend the evening and the overnight with you. You will be travelling alone tomorrow, and you will need to be alert, so you will not have to take a watch tonight."

Then the elf looks at the others and says, Harvest Moon, you and Lorth take first watch, before the darkest night sets in. Alkali, you watch with them, since your eyes will be important after the sun fully sets. Arminas and I will take the middle watch, since we can both see well in the dark. Bralin, you and Elerinn can have the morning watch. Will that work for everyone?"

Assuming the watch set-up is acceptable, Andrath helps to make camp. As the party is eating their supper, he is sure to feed his rat, and sends a mental image of the kinds of night predators that are present in the forest, to make sure that the rat stays close to home.

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday December 1st, 2004 8:07:36 AM

The party agrees to make camp and rest for the evening following the arduous crossing. A simple meal is prepared and watches assigned. Lorth spends most of the evening cleaning and oiling his armor and weapons before taking first watch with the monk. Middle watches are taken by the elves while Bralin and Elerinn take last watch.

Caerthon unsaddles Tangiers and releases him to graze before joining the others around the small fire. Used to spartan conditions, the old paladin soon makes himself comfortable and tucks into his meal. "The beginning of the dead zone is one days march due east of here. The Fort lies a further half day to the northeast, but the going will be tougher. The land is scarred by deep gullies that weave back and forth and there is little protection from the elements."

The night passes uneventfully and Bralin and Elerinn wake the party, except for Caerthon who has already saddled Tangiers and is prepared to leave. "I've a long ride ahead of me my friends. I pray you find Hugo and Langdon and return with news of the happenings at the Crimson Fort."

Andrath wakes in the morning, pleased that the rat has not invaded anyone's backpack. He feeds the rodent, and tells it, "You may explore the campsite while I am studying, and while we are eating breakfast, but don't get into anyone's things, and stay out from underfoot."

He replies to Caerthon, "And you travel safely as well. We will meet back at Magpie Crossing, hopefully with news of your friends."

He moves over to Arminas, and says, "I have a rat for a familiar, and he becomes way too curious at the most inopportune times, if I don't let him out to explore from time to time. Can you make sure that your eagle doesn't mistake him for food? Also, our normal marching order when we enterred untravelled areas was to have me move ahead of the party about 50'-100', and signal back if I discovered anything. I am thinking that in the wilderness, you might be better suited to this task, since you can look for track signs as well. I can travel with the party, and keep a careful watch out to the rear. If you signal you want us to stop, I will fade to the side, and make my way around beside you. If it becomes a combat situation, I do best when I flank. What do you think?"

After hearing what the ranger has to say, and assuming the rat will be safe, Andrath lets him out for some exercise, and pulls his spellbook out to study. He will have a light breakfast, and round the rat up, pack his gear, and get ready to travel for the day. [OOC: Spot check of 30 while travelling.]

Arminas is up before the sun, sitting beside a small fire. He takes his bow, and checks it carefully, then runs some fine oil across the wood. Soon after sunrise, Erwen (the eagle) fly towards him, with a rabbit in his talons. He gently takes the rabbit, and whispers quietly to Erwen as he sits upon a stump. After cleaning the rabbit, he takes the hind quarters and cooks them over the fire as Erwen eats the rest of the rabbit.

"Best to live off the land as we can, for food may be hard to find in the dead zone. Does anyone else care for wild game, Erwen loves to hunt."

Arminas then eats the cooked rabbit, saving his rations for harder times. If anyone else desires, he will have Erwen hunt again (all very early in the morning, he will not delay departure).

Seeing that the others regard Andrath as a leader, Arminas waits to see his decision on travel.

He replies to Andrath "Yes, I noticed your small friend. I will do my best to convey to Erwen that he is not to be disturbed. While game is plentiful, it should not be a problem, he prefers other game to rats. If however the dead zone has shortages, it would be best for us both to keep an eye on the two."

"Yes, I would be happy to take the lead through the wilderness. Erwen will fly before us, looking for others along the path. I will also look for tracks, they should be easy to spot as well."

"Oh, and I also fight best with my bow. It would be helpful if Lorth and Bralin would go to the front if we encounter enemies. Don't worry, I seldom hit my friends."

Merryn Blackbridge  d20+8=18 d20+2=8 d20+6=25
Wednesday December 1st, 2004 7:44:01 PM

There is something irksome to these woods, thought Merryn. Such a large area devoid of living vegetation could not be natural. He placed his hand on the trunk of a fallen tree and could swear he felt a distinct taint to it (Spellcraft: 25).

Merryn lingered with his hand on the tree for a long while until he was suddenly startled by indistinct voices in the distance (Listen: 18). He strained to determine how many people were speaking.

His curiosity overwhelming his caution, Merryn moved as quietly as he could (Move Silently: 8) through the underbrush towards the sound of the voices. Seeing a group of people breakfasting together made Merryn think of the hunger in his own belly.

Well, I do need to eat, thought Merryn. Proceeding rather deliberately and noisily, so as not to surprise the travellers, Merryn made his way to the edge of camp. Trying to sound as friendly as possible, and thinking of his empty stomach, Merryn called out to the group, "Hello there kind travellers. Be not alarmed; I intend you no harm. I only wonder if any of your group might have some food to spare for a hungry wanderer?"

Elerinn
Thursday December 2nd, 2004 6:31:56 AM

Elerinn wakes early for the last night shift with Bralin and spends the rest of the night in the dwarf's quiet company. He puts the hood of his cloak over his red hair and holds the raven Qamaro, who is sleeping, in his lap.

Some time later, Arminas is the first to wake. The gnome greets him softly, as not to wake any of the others. When the elf asks him if he desires any breakfast, he says: "That would be nice, thank you! You're right, we'd better save our rations for the dead zone."

If Arminas returns later with some food, he thanks him heartilly and eats some breakfast.

When Andrath asks Arminas about the safety of his rat, Elerinn looks at the raven on his shoulder and says: "Arminas, does Erwen hunt for smaller birds sometimes? I wouldn't like to see my friend Qamaro here ending up as our breakfast. He stays with me most of the times, but sometimes he desires to fly around somewhat. Is he save?"

Right at the moment he is finished talking, Elerinn sees a stranger approaching the camp. He seems friendly, and hungry. The sorcerer says: "Greetings fellow traveller, my stomage isn't that big so I still have some food left. Please come and join us by the fire."

Merryn emerges from a copse of trees and spots the shore of the river where the encampment is. Although not devoid of vegetation this far from the fort, the druid can nonetheless detect something amiss with the vegetation. As he approaches the river he can make out the mixed group of travellers gathered around a small campfire. Two elves, a dwarf, a gnome, a halfling and two humans are engaged in preparing for a day of travel.

Elerinn spots the newcomer first and agrees to share breakfast with the hungry traveller.

Caerthon inspects the newcomer with warines, but unable to detect anything evil about him, welcomes him to the campfire. Turning to Lorth and the others he announces his departure and swings up into the saddle of his great warhorse. "I shall return in two days by the trail through the hills, some call it the 'Paladin's Trail' although there's some that would call it the 'Fool's Trail' I'd venture. Take care friends" and with a gentle nudge with his foot Tangiers swings back to the river and they are gone in a spray of water.

Andrath and Arminus agree to a new marching order, and as soon as breakfast is finished the party can begin it's long march east.

[OOC Please welcome Merryn to the party]

Lorth
Thursday December 2nd, 2004 8:24:16 AM

[OOC Welcome Merryn, it is an excellent game you are joining!]

Lorth bids Caerthon goodbye, "Be safe, friend."
He then turns to Merryn, "All goodly travelers are welcome at our fire, I will share what I have with you, if our good gnome Elerinn doesn't fill you up."
As he is retreiving something from his pack to offer Merryn he realizes with all the goings on he hasn't checked to make sure his new companions don't walk a dark path.

When Lorth gets a chance he takes a minute to concentrate on Merryn and Arminas, he is sure he will detect nothing, but better safe than sorry.

Merryn
Thursday December 2nd, 2004 8:49:21 AM

After hearing the kind invitation of the gnome, Merryn makes his way hastily to the edge of the camp fire. His eyes widening at the sight of the food, he accepts the offering readily. Before hastily tearing into his breakfast Merryn turns towards the gnome, saying, "Thank you young master gnome. I have been so pre-occupied this past while that I have not found any time to gather my own food."

After finishing his breakfast quickly, Merryn turns again to the gnome saying with embarrassment, "I am sorry my young friend, I have given precedence to hunger over humility. My name is Merryn Blackbridge. Might I ask how it is that you and your party find yourselves in these woods?"

Noticing the intense glare of the Paladin and remembering his own surprise appearance, Merryn also adds quietly, "And perhaps you might introduce me to your party, lest they draw any hasty conclusions from my haggard appearance." Smiling ever slightly, Merryn adds, "I assure you, young master, I was only desperate for a bite to eat, and am grateful that you saw fit to share it with a stranger such as I."

[OOC: Hello to everyone in the game. :)]

Bralin
Thursday December 2nd, 2004 11:02:37 AM

Bralin has been to one side of the group, sitting and staring intently at a fist sized sphere of obsidian.

Without warning, the dwarf rises, puts away the stone, and has a small something to eat. His black banded mail and shield are a bit dirty, but he makes no move to clean them.

At the appearance of Merryn, Bralin looks to Andrath and Lorth. They know how best to accommodate strangers. It is then he hears Ariminas' comment,
"It would be helpful if Lorth and Bralin would go to the front if we encounter enemies."

Bralin snorts once. The stategem is obvious.

Harvest
Thursday December 2nd, 2004 11:58:49 AM

The small brown girl returns from her meditation to find a newcomer finishing the end of a ravenous breakfast. The paladin Lorth seems intent upon deep thoughts or concentration. Neither Elerinn nor Bralin Stoneminder appear on their guard.

The monk approaches quietly. Her hands appear from the brown sleeves of her oversized robe and they come together in a salute of welcome, right fist ensconced in left palm.

"Greetings," the crest of brown hair that hangs over her forehead bobs as she bows, "my name is Harvest Moon."

She once again takes note of the hunger with which the stranger consumes his food.

"Magpie Crossing is a days travel south across the river, if you are lost," she adds in an attempt to be helpful.

Elerinn
Thursday December 2nd, 2004 12:30:33 PM

After Merryn has finished his breakfast and has introduced himself, Elerinn says: "I am Elerinn Brazael, and we are the Swords of Light!" To emphasize his words, he gestures to all of his companions around him.

He then looks at one of the elves and says: "Please thank Arminas for your breakfast, it was he who brought me this food. We are travelling through these woods towards the Dead Zone..."

Elerinn stops abrubtly and looks at his companions. He isn't sure about telling Merryn about their mission here, so he waits.

Arminas
Thursday December 2nd, 2004 1:35:24 PM

Finishing his rabbit, Arminas wipes the juices from his mouth.

"Elerinn, I'm glad you like the coney. Here, have one of these as well. It will give you energy for a long march." He hands Elerinn a tuber that he pulled from the coals as they sat and ate. "It is yuca, and grows by the river." Arminas pulls several of the long tubers from the fire, and tucks a few away in his pack. There is still some rabbit cooking on a spit over the fire.

"There is plenty, if anyone desires good food from the land. Much better than pastries and such. You don't want to end up like the fat innkeeper."

As Elerinn greets the stranger, Arminas looks carefully at him. Slowly, his hand eases away from the hilt of the sword, and he nods a greeting at the stranger.

"You are welcome to share our food, for in deed it is not ours, but belongs to the land, as we all do."

"I am but a stranger also, my name is Arminas and I was sent by the Woldian League of Advertures to help guide the Swords of Light. In fact, I just met them yesterday. I don't think I made too good of a first impression on the dwarf though, he seems a bit gruf. Perhaps a nice bit of coney will soften his spirits?" He glances at the dour drawf.

Upon mention of the Dead Zone, Arminas bristles. "There is a foul plague upon the land, and all I hear is talk of armies and battles. The true battle is against things that are unknown. We must stop this curse, we all must."

Looking a bit more timid he adds "At least I mean to."

DM Bob & Carla
Friday December 3rd, 2004 8:07:42 AM

The party is slow to break camp along the river. Breakfast is shared, bedrolls packed and ever so slowly the Swords of Light ready themselves for a long march ahead.

Arminus and Merryn share their thoughts about the dead zone while the others pack up.

Merryn
Friday December 3rd, 2004 9:22:43 AM

Looking around the camp Merryn speaks up, "Well it is certainly nice to make all of your acquaintances. Although I am most at home deep in the trees, it is still nice to see a friendly face now and again."

Turning to Arminas, Merryn says, "Elerinn tells me I ought to thank you for the delicious breakfast and so thank you Arminas." He bows slightly to Arminas. Speaking more gravely now, Merryn goes on to say, "Elerinn says that you are headed to the Dead Zone. I have heard of the disturbances there and in fact I was headed there myself. I was drawn to these woods by a foul blight just to the west of here. I could not divine its nature, but it is certainly not natural. I would caution you and the party of adventurers you lead to be on guard. I would also like to request that I might accompany you and your group to the Dead Zone. Seeing as I was heading there anyways, it might be useful for your party to have someone with a sensitivity to such unnatural disturbances."

Harvest
Friday December 3rd, 2004 12:01:15 PM

The newcomer ignores Harvest Moon's mistaken attempt at aide. Possibly all for the best as he seems not to be lost after all. In fact, it appears that his destination falls along the same path as theirs.

The small brown girl shrugs under the big oversized robe and turns to the disposition of her gear. The bedroll is the sole item that needs packing, and Harvest folds it neatly, working it carefully into the large pouch of her haversack.

Harvest shoulders the haversack and adjusts the straps for comfort. Then, before facing east and the road ahead, she takes another look at the newcomer, Merryn Blackbridge. Her eyes attempt to capture his features, height, build, race. Perhaps it is the morning light, but the little monk finds these things elude her.

Bralin
Friday December 3rd, 2004 2:17:58 PM

Again, Bralin looks over to Andrath and Lorth to see if they accept the newcomer. They do, and so the dwarf extends a gnarly hand.

"Bralin Stoneminder," he tells her by way of introduction.

Having fufilled the necessary duties of welcome, he returns to his previous task. Bralin gathers his gear, and waits for his companions to begin their march, taking up the usual rear guard.

Arminas
Friday December 3rd, 2004 3:25:06 PM

Arminas looks happy, perhaps for the first time in your short aquiantance with him. He seems to have taken an immediate liking to the newcomer, or at least did so after the mention of the dead zone and the blight on the woods.

"It is good to meet someone else who senses the true problems we face. I would be happy to have your company. Of course, I'm new here and understand that Andrath here calls the shots."

Looking at the other with thier animal friends he adds:
"Don't worry, Erwen is well fed, your friends will be safe."

With that, it is Arminas is quickly ready to go. Bag packed, he takes the lead and starts scouting for tracks. Erwen flys far overhead in ever widening circles.

[OOC: I did not re-roll the spot and listen checks for Arminas and Erwen, as I already did for this day of travel]

Andrath
Saturday December 4th, 2004 10:00:26 PM

Andrath listens to what the newcomer has to say, and approaches the newcomer.

Andrath is an elf dressed in a light chaing shirt, with two swords and a bow. He holds out his hand in greeting and says, "My name is Andrath Silverhand, and I too am pleased that you can accompany us into this 'Dead Zone'. Maybe you can shine some light onto what is making it so 'Dead'.

Sometime during the camp pack-up, Andrath quietly approaches Lorth and asks, "I presume that you have tried our newcomers, and detected no evil? If you do spot evil on anyone we meet, especially someone that is trying to befriend us, I want you to signal me by holding your right thumb and forefinger in a circle. Between us, we can decide if we want to unmask the person or not. How does that sound?"

As they are heading out, Andrath picks up his rat, and says to the ranger, "Thank you and your bird-friend for breakfast. When you move ahead of us, if you spot something, I would like you to do one of three things. Either call out for us, and we will hurry up as fast as we can. If you hold your open hand over your head, we will all stop where we are and wait for your next signal. If you hold your fist up, we will stop and ready ourselves for battle. I will move off to one side, and try to flank around up to your position. Will that work for you?"

He sets the marching order for the day, with Arminas some 50'-100' ahead. Bralin and Lorth will follow, "Make sure that you can keep the ranger's back in sight. If you start to lose him, let him know to slow down a bit." Merryn, Elerinn and Alkali will follow next, and Harvest Moon and Andrath will bring up the rear. "Harvest Moon, we need to keep our eyes open to the sides and the rear. If Arminas holds his fist over his head, I will move quietly to one side, and you do the same to the other side. All right?"

Greg OOC
Saturday December 4th, 2004 10:04:26 PM

Welcome to the new players. Starting on Monday, I will take over running the game for a month, to give our two DMs a rest. I am meeting with Bob this weekend to go over the part of the module that I will be running. I have been really impressed lately with the level of the posts from everyone, and I hope I can keep up to the quality that our DMs have shown.

However, this means that Andrath will have to metaphorically step back from the limelight a little, and the rest of you will need to step up and 'call the shots'. OK?

Elerinn
Sunday December 5th, 2004 6:09:08 PM

Elerinn watches how Merryn introduces himself, and is introduced, to the various members of the Swords of Light. He is pleased as well with another person who accompanies them to the Dead Zone. It sounds more and more dangerous and mysterious.
When Andrath tells which marching order he would like to see, the gnome positions himself behind Bralin and Lorth.
Feeling a bit misschievous, Elerinn asks the dwarf marching before him: "So, Bralin, do you miss the Shadfly's diners already?"

Arminas
Sunday December 5th, 2004 8:31:15 PM

Arminas nods as Andrath explains the strategy. "It sounds like a solid plan, based upon experience. I will add just one thing. Erwen is trained to fly high, about 2000 feet. If he sees others in the forest, apart from the usual animals, he will circle over their heads and do a short dive, and then again climb and circle. If you see him do so, then be prepared."

Harvest
Sunday December 5th, 2004 11:57:33 PM

Harvest Moon says nothing in reply to Andrath Silverhand. Instead, rather, she smiles and nods her understanding and ascent.

Lorth
Monday December 6th, 2004 8:18:53 AM

"That signal is fine Andrath, I detected no ill intent on the newcomers.", Lorth replies evenly.
He then secures all his equipment, takes a quick look to see where Bralin is and puts himself in lince near him.

Merryn
Monday December 6th, 2004 2:06:11 PM

Nodding to Andrath, Merryn says with a note of gravity in his voice, "Well, I hope I can be of some service to the Swords of Light. Thank you for allowing me to accompany you." Giving a meaningful look to Erwen in the sky, he adds, "It is to be certain that the Dead Zone is no place to be caught alone and unawares."

Taking note of the signals Andrath described, Merryn takes his place behind Elerinn giving him a friendly pat on the shoulder and saying, "Well my fiery young friend, I guess it is time for our voyage to begin!"

Harvest/Al - OoC

Might it be possible to get a description of Merryn? Race, apparent age, brief description of stature, clothing, hair/eye color? I use them in my references to other characters. Thanks.

Merryn/John - OOC
Monday December 6th, 2004 4:08:41 PM

I thought I would have made it in to the adventurer's repose by now, but here is what I wrote up for it:

With dark brown hair and green eyes, Merryn looks very much at home in the forest. His body is sinewy and rather slim. He has a desperate appearance about him: his eyes are always looking ahead and often move frantically about when he speaks to people. His dress matches his surroundings and so his armour is the brown of an oak tree and his tunic and pants a deep, verdant green like the moss on rocks. As a hangover from his former life, he tries to keep himself close-shaven, but is often found with a few days of stubbly hair growth on his face. His features are sharp and angular and his glare, when focused, is intense.

Age: mid 20s; average height for a human.

I hope this helps. :)

The road less taken (ADM Greg)
Monday December 6th, 2004 11:21:29 PM

The party packs up, and sets the marching order for the day. Arminas takes the lead, keeping his sharp ranger eyes open for trouble.

He leads them almost due east, for the first few hours of the morning following the paladin's trail. Shortly before lunch, the trail takes a sharp turn north, and now the party has to head east across country, looking for the large river gulley that will lead them into the dead zone.

During the morning travels, the landscape is healthy and lush, mostly knee-high grass with small shrub copses scattered about. Birds can be heard, although they generally keep out of sight, so as not to be spotted by the eagle. There are numerous small game trails around, and signs of small hoofed animals are fairly common. Occasionally in the far distance, small herds of antelope can be seen grazing.

The morning sun shines brightly, and a gentle breeze blows out of the east. From time to time, the breeze carries a whiff of some sort of foul scent, but it is quickly gone before it becomes strong enough to be identified.

At around noon, the party stops for a lunch break, beside a small south-flowing stream surrounded by willow trees on both banks. Strangely, the willows on the west side of the stream appear large and healthy, while the willows on the east side are more sickly looking, with yellow-tinged leaves and stunted branches.

Tuesday December 7th, 2004 12:08:26 AM

After stretching his legs a bit from the walk, Merryn makes his way into the willow trees to sit in quiet contemplation for a few moments, breathing in the atmosphere around him deeply.

Rising up from his meditation, Merryn walks slowly in the direction of the sickly trees. Studying them closely with his eyes, he remembers the similarly damaged copse of trees that he had visited that morning. Turning around, Merryn motions for Arminas to come have a look at them with him. "Do you remember, Arminas," he says in a concerned voice, "what I told you this morning about the blighted area of trees? This area feels much the same way to me as that one did. It is not natural for trees on one side of a stream to prosper, while those on the other suffer, for they are rooted in the same soil. It might be best to inform Andrath about these developments. At any rate, keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary and keep a close watch on Erwen."

(OOC: provided the party is stopped long enough, Merryn will seek out (Survival 16) something for him and the party to eat. Also, if the sickly trees are near enough for Merryn to touch them or the stream is shallow enough to cross easily, Merryn will try to divine the nature of their sickness (Spellcraft 18)).

Lorth
Tuesday December 7th, 2004 9:34:07 AM

Lorth follows along quietly, seemingly in deep thought.
When they come to the rest spot, he looks at the stunted trees with interest, but expected as much from all the descriptions he has heard thus far.
If/when they cross into the area where the brush looks stunted, Lorth then walks with his warhammer in hand and his shield unslung.

Harvest  d20+9=29 d20+9=20
Tuesday December 7th, 2004 11:29:03 AM

Harvest walks quietly through the grass, her eye on the landscape. Traveling in a group is different than traveling by herself. The pace is slower. In some ways it's easier. But that makes it more difficult to concentrate on the task at hand. Knowing that the others are watching dulls the sense of urgency as well. It's comfortable, and that makes Harvest Moon nervous. Her mind wanders. She looks for sign of the eagle up above. Perhaps, when they return to Magpie Crossing, she should buy a small tool kit and begin work on the wooden eye again, shaping it more properly into the symbol of the Unblinking One. The contents of her scrolls come unbidden to her mind, and Harvest frowns. Through force of will, she turns her attention back in the direction of a vigilant watch. (Spot 29, Listen 20)

During lunch Harvest follows the new man while she munches on a piece of pie. He eyes the stunted trees, and calls the ranger over. Then he says to keep an eye out for anything unusual.

"What about that smell?" she asks the man quietly. "Was that unusual? I don't think I've ever smelled the like before. What do you think it could be?"

The group pauses for rest, and Bralin does the same. He isn't hungry, and lets the others eat while he stands watch.

[Listen 9, Spot 21]

The trees are unintersted, but for marking the spot of change.
Change is bad

Touching changed trees is also bad.
As soon as Merryn moves to take hold of the sickly trees' leaves and branches, Bralin pulls his axe and prepares to go save him.

Arminas [Track 16 searching for tracks at river edge, DC 5 needed]  d20+6=16

As Merryn gestures, Arminas walks over to the trees.

"Yes, I see what you mean. There is no natural reason why this should be so. I will be ready and watchful as we cross into the blighted area."

To Harvest:
"That foul smell I have never encountered, yet it reminds me of something. I'm sure that you have encountered those who were wounded in battle, and without proper care the wound became worse. That awful smell that comes from an uncleaned wound reminds me of this smell. The land needs cleansing, I am sure of it. I just have no idea how to go about such a task. Perhaps after we discover the cause it will become more clear."

Arminas then carefully checks the edge of the river for signs of others who may have crossed. If healthy plants still grow on this side of the river, he will dig some roots for later.

Arminas calls down Erwen, who lands on a branch near him. With a few gestures, the eagle flys low looking for game on the healthy side of the river. If successful, he will make sure the Eagle eats and save some for later as well. Otherwise, he ate well in the morning.

Elerinn
Tuesday December 7th, 2004 2:31:56 PM

Elerinn looks at sick trees at the other side of the bank and wonders if the Dead Zone already starts at the other side. He feels strangely excited when he thinks about the dangers that await him and his companions on the other side and waits to see if Merryn can determine the nature of the tree's disease.

Andrath
Tuesday December 7th, 2004 9:49:14 PM

Andrath can see that the shrubs on one side of the stream appear unhealthy, but being a city boy, he has no idea about what is going on. He eats his lunch, with his swords at the ready, while the naturalists of the party try to discern what is going on with the plants.

An afternoon of travel (ADM Greg)  d100=22 d100=75
Tuesday December 7th, 2004 11:13:13 PM

The party eats their lunch on the healthy side of the stream. Arminas sends his eagle down the stream to hunt, and the bird returns after a few minutes with a small lizard in its talons. So, the eagle has lunch as well.

After lunch, they climb down the side of the small gully, and wade through the stream. Climbing the other side, everyone readies their weapons and prepares for the worst.

Once on the other side, Merryn takes a closer look at the blighted willows. He can tell that they are sick, but he can't tell exactly what is wrong. Is it the soil? Is it the air? Is it some sort of plant disease? He can't be sure. On the positive side, the party passes uneventfully through the 30' or so of willows on the east bank, and continues east towards the Dead Zone and the Fort.

As they travel east, even the citified members of the party can see the effects leaking out from the Dead Zone. The grass is brown and sparse, and there are exposed patches of brown soil in places. The copses of shrubs are fewer and farther between, and look more scabrous and sickly than the willows at the stream. They also appear to be a different species, with twisted branches and long sharp thorns. Also, there are numerous tree trunks scattered around, that appear as if the top was broken off. The bark has turned a dull grey, and there are no signs of the normal woodpecker holes in any of the boles. In the distance, Harvest spots two or three four-legged creatures. Although they are too far away to make out the species, they certainly look different from the antelope that were seen before lunch. Bird songs are absent, but the party can make out a group of ravens or vultures circling some half-mile to the north.

As the afternoon lengthens, the breeze freshens out of the east, and then turns into a strong wind. It blows in a line of dark clouds, and a light drizzle begins to fall, as the temperature drops. Within two hours of dusk, the drizzle has turned into a steady rain, blowing directly into the groups' faces.

The party pushes on, and shortly before dusk they reach the first large gully heading northeast towards the Dead Zone and the Fort. The gully is about 15' deep in the center, and about 75' wide. There is a small trickle of water flowing through the center of the gully, and down to the Clearwater River.

Everyone make a spot check, please.

Rain and a gully. The little brown monk runs her eye over the scene with a frown of concern. She waves for Andrath Silverhand's attention. Pointing to the rain coming down from above, and then sweeping her hand across to indicate the expanse of the gully ahead, she mouths a single word: 'Flood?'

Then, with another series of gestures, Harvest conveys the idea that she is going to climb the right side of the gully for a higher vantage from which to survey the land. As she makes her way to the gully wall, Harvest Moon carefully scrutinizes the area in the failing light of dusk. (Spot 29, Listen 25, Climb 14)

Hesitant to enter the gully by himself, Merryn awaits Harvest's scouting report. He will cross the gully in a group with the others, if at all possible.

As dark clouds roll in, Arminas gives a low whistle.

Out of the sky a dark shape drops, and you hear and feel a sudden rush of air as the eagle flaps her mighty wings, and settles onto a stump in front of Arminas.

"Erwen will not be able to scout in this weather, I will keep her close. It is best not to rely too much on her, as she is still learning how to seek enemies, especially in such a strange land."

Arminas then give a low series of whistles, and gestures with his palm down. (ready to defend command)

Upon encountering the gully, Arminas looks up toward the sky and then down towards the gully.

"Be careful, large gullies do not form without reason. At times, large flows of water pass through here. See, already there is a trickle of water." (spot 22)

If the edge of the gully is not too overgrown, Arminas will suggest that they follow along the top edge of the gully as they move toward the fort.

A Fortuitous Find? (ADM Greg)
Thursday December 9th, 2004 11:38:37 PM

At the top of the gully, on the side the party is standing on, Arminas notices a shrub that seems out of place. It is a normal, healthy-looking willow, different from the sickly thorn bushes that abound along the large gully. Harvest Moon spots a some scratchings on a flat rock that is hidden under the edge of the out-of-place willow.

Pushing back the shrub, the party can see that there is a symbol scratched on the rock's surface, a symbol of an eye, with a line scratched over top of it. There is also an arrow scratched on the rock, that appears to point over the edge, and into the gully.

Meanwhile, the wind and rain pick up force...

Merryn
Friday December 10th, 2004 7:30:47 AM

Drawing his cloak in against the wind, Merryn shivers from the cold and wet. The symbol etched on the rock seems odd, but it must have some purpose. Whether that pupose is benign or otherwise, Merryn cannot be sure.

Turning to Arminas and Harvest, Merryn asks, "What do you think it means?"

Unsure himself, Merryn awaits direction from the leader of the group, bolstering himself against the increasingly inclement weather.

Lorth
Friday December 10th, 2004 7:52:52 AM

"Does anyone know trail markings? I would guess the eye symbol stands for lord Gargul, but the line confuses me, is it a warning not to go do there, or a trail marker?", Lorth ponders aloud.

The storm begins to thrash in earnest. Harvest Moon looks up from the symbol on the scratched rock and seeks out the eyes of the group.

Harvest mouths the word, "Storm."

Gesturing to the rock and, with a finger, sighting along the arrow to the point at which things drop off into the gully, Harvest points to herself and indicates a spot ten feet to the left. Pointing to the elven ranger, Arminas, she indicates a spot ten feet to the right.

With confirmation from the eyes of Andrath Silverhand and the others, Harvest moves off quietly in the direction of the gully's edge, noting the ranger's progress as she goes. (Move Silently 11, Hide 9, Spot 25, Listen 26) As she goes, she ponders the questions of the others. What might the symbol of the lined out eye mean. "I don't know the eye symbol. Harvest, does this symbol have the same meaning as the holy symbol you carry? Whatever the meaning, the arrow typically means a direction to travel. I do not think this symbol is evil, or else this plant would be diseased as the others. I believe this is a good find, but caution is advised."

It seems like Arminas can barely hear his own voice as the winds and rain pick up. As Harvest gestures, Arminas nods and quickly goes to the spot ten feet to the right. He draws his cloak tight around him to keep off the rain and chill. His bow is at the ready, an arrow notched.

The dwarf takes in the marker. It can only mean but one thing.

"There be a cave in the wall on yon gully," he states emphatically.

Bralin immediately moves to point of the gully's edge indicated by the arrow, and looks over the side. He'll even clamber down, if feasible, searching for a cave entrance.
