It's Great to Communicate -- DM Donna
Monday December 13th, 2004 6:46:39 AM

Gunther's feline sidekick crouches low and hisses at the great vaguely-reptillian winged thing.

The oversized creature inhales heavily once more, then fixes an eye upon Bertram, the only one to have spoken directly to it.

"I no longer smell the great green irritant," the creature growls, its very voice making the hairs on your skin prickle with revulsion, "...and--somehow--this very place seems no longer the same..." Its red eyes narrow and it casts its gaze about.

"Parnoth is no longer here, but I can't be sure that you aren't his agents here to destroy me." The beast pauses, its spiked tail lashing in a rather lazy fashion. "I should probably just eat you all now...but that wouldn't be sporting--and you might be enemies of Parnoth, so it also wouldn't be quite so polite on my part." The creature considers for a moment and then smiles, showing a row of oversized, sharp pointy teeth.

"I know--a riddle! I'll ask you a riddle and--if you can answer it correctly--I will be satisfied that you aren't here to assassinate me, so I will not eat you. That sounds fair, don't you think...?"

K'Nara looks from the creature to her colleagues.

"We aren't here to kill you, so I guess we'll just take up your challenge, then." the leader of the Tines agrees.

"Well, then, listen carefully..." the creature says.

"He starts and ends two Common words...one painfull in love, one painfull in everyday matter. Do you know what two words I must be..?"

K'Nara scowls in concentration, but she can't think of a thing to say except mumbling something about hating riddles.

The large, dangerous-looking beast looks over the rest of the party.

"Each of you may guess the answer--once each." it says smugly. "If any of you are correct, I will hold up my end of our bargain."

Figment
Monday December 13th, 2004 7:58:24 AM

The mage decides to hold casting. "If we attack each other we attack our own allies. Parnoth is also our enemy. Tell me, would his minions or agents say such a thing knowing he watches? We would be killed by him. If we are to be tested, fine. But should we at least first know who we are tested by? At least we should be civil.". The mage begins thinking about what the answer might be.

Ingrge
Monday December 13th, 2004 5:10:44 PM

Pondering from his invisible position staff in hand, he thinks to himself. I hate riddles ... wait, a minute. HE starts and ends both words... Painful... Love.... everyday... so He--------he and He-------he. Hmmm, Ahhhh.

Without thinking and actually forgetting he was invisible, he starts speaking. Well, for a moment there I was actually worried, but then I remembered that I have forgotten more riddles that you have probably ever known, so I would have to say that the two words are Heartache and Headache

Lian
Monday December 13th, 2004 10:31:52 PM

Clueless, the monk just scratches his head. Then Ingrge answers the riddle. "Clever. I would have never figured that." The elf smiles.

Milo
Monday December 13th, 2004 10:34:26 PM

Milo snorts from where he is hidden in the brush, and then steps forward, "You have got to be kidding me. That is child's play. The two words are heartache and headache." The halfling sheaths his short sword and strides forward, a smile on his face. "The story of my life!" The halfling chuckles at his own private joke. OOC: whoops... that is what I get to jumping in with the answer before reading everyone else's posts.

Olana
Monday December 13th, 2004 11:23:34 PM

Olana steps from behind the bush, trying to keep a straight face. She's having a hard time, as her face keeps wanting to wrinkle up in an 'Ewwwww' gesture - as in Eeeeeeew what a horrible creature, and Eeeeewww a riddle.

Thank all the trees in Culverwood for Ingrge and Milo.
"Yes," she says, completely ripping off the answers those two suggested. "Heartache and headache."

Gunther AC30, HP 73/73 (Barkskin, Bull's Strength, Cat's Grace)  d20+1=11
Tuesday December 14th, 2004 12:07:00 AM

The large warrior breathes a huge sigh of relief as Ingrge and Milo answer the riddle. Analytical reasoning wasn't exactly his thing... He stares up at the gigantic creature, hoping for all his worth that the thing is honorable, but with their recent luck doubting it will be. And where was that Elise person??? (Spot=11) This was all so complex and confusing.

The Final Answer -- DM Donna
Tuesday December 14th, 2004 7:50:56 AM

The creature eyes Figment with a bemused stare.

"I am not in the habit of speaking with my food before I eat..." it says in the tone of one with a LOT of confidence that dinner will soon be served.

However, both Ingrge and Milo pipe up, and the rather smug look on its vaguely reptillian face fades into astonishment.

"Well, well..." it replies, nodding an acknowledgement to the pair, "...I've been using THAT one for a couple hundred years--I suppose that it's about time that I switched up riddles. Yes, the two words are heartache and headache, as they both start AND end with the "H" "E" of the first line in the riddle...the heart will ache in matters of love, and quite often the head aches in everyday matters." The creature stetches itself, emphasizing its size and power with the movement, then shakes itself before flopping down in a relaxed crouch.

"You answered the challenge fairly, o ye of the Noble Races," it says equably, "And so I won't eat you. As I consider you my intellectual equals, I can properly introduce myself: I am Aveler Hookback. My kind have been dubbed 'manticores' by your types, though I, myself, am no ordinary member of the race."

"I am K'Nara Illutu," the female fighter introduces herself, still not sheathing her sword, "These are my friends..." She introduces each of the Talons in turn, even nodding to the panther that is crouched by Gunther. "We're called the Emerald Talons, and we're trying to retrieve an artifact that used to belong to Parnoth." Aveler looks around with a scowl.

"Parnoth isn't here." K'Nara says immediately, eliciting a snort from the manticore.

"Aye, my nose told me as much," the beast said airily, "Though my last memory of this place included the green galoot being here for our Duel of Honor."

"Parnoth and Honor--in the same sentence..???" the leader of the Talons asks sarcastically. Aveler chuckles.

"My initial reaction exactly." he says. "But I had issued the challenge and Parnoth seemed to have accepted it--it was to be a Duel of Honor, which meant we were to use only our natural abilities. I was locked in combat with him and lining him up for a lovely volley of spikes--" The manticore lashes his tail as an example of the maneuver and a half-dozen or so giant spikes fly past one side of the Talons and embed themselves in the ground, in one of the trees and even in a rock.

"--when that cheater produces a lantern out of nowhere and shines it at me..." Aveler growls in remembrance, "...laughing about how it was his natural ability to use magic to summon forth anything he wanted. I was rooted to the ground--and I remember nothing after that until you lot appeared." K'Nara exchanges glances with Figment, Ingrge and Milo.

"Sounds like he used that Serpent Star on you." K'Nara says. "How long ago was this Duel?"

"It was springtime..." Aveler responds, adding a date that occurred a good three-hundred-fifty or so years ago.

"He enchanted you for over 350 years, then." K'Nara informs the manticore. "We're trying to catch up to the thieves that stole the Serpent Star and get it back before Parnoth and his crew can. We believe that they're heading for a place called Blackshadow Hall."

"You plan to give it back to the dishonorable green git?" Aveler asks, a dark expression on his face.

"No--we can't let it fall back into his hands again...nor stay in anyone else's." K'Nara says automatically. The manticore looks thoughtful for a moment...then he stands on his four feet so suddenly that the panther bolts into the spherical bush for cover.

"I'll be right back." Aveler says, springing into the air and flying up high into the sky, circling widely for a moment or two before landing nearby again.

"Blackshadow Hall is an outpost carved into the side of a hill that lies about another three days' march from here--IF you follow the trail as this other group is doing." the manticore says slyly. "However, there is another trail that parallels their course a bit...but it will have you get to the stronghold half a day or so before this other group will. Promise me that you will not let Parnoth have this lantern back should you win it from your thieves and I will give you the directions on how to locate the shorter trail."

"By my honor!" K'Nara says immediately in Elven--and Aveler looks at her in surprise.

"Elven honor..? From a human..?" he says. "What IS The Wold coming to?" Aveler snorts and then nods.

"Very well, then--I agree as well." He proceeds to describe the terrain that leads to the parallel trail...Olana and Athalorn (as well as anyone else with a smattering of Survival or Nature Knowledge) can easily locate this trail from Aveler's description.

"As long as Parnoth loses," the manticore says acerbically, "I don't really care who wins."

With this, the huge winged beast leaps into the air once more and flies off, leaving the Talons to plan their next move.

Figment
Tuesday December 14th, 2004 8:27:19 AM

The mage hopes that Elise doesn't see the huge beast leave. "I'd say we hoof it. Perhaps we can force our march and get there even sooner? Two and 1/2 days of hiking is tough but we can do it on little sleep - maybe 2 hours each night. We can sleep and prepare when we get there. It would be very nice for us to be her welcoming committee...".

Falin
Tuesday December 14th, 2004 11:05:37 AM

"I agree with figment. I would like nothing better than to get there well before the rest of them in order to set up a nice welcome. I have been waiting a long time to get a shot at Parnoth and this is just a quick stop on the way. I would gladly sacrifice sleep for that."

Athalorn
Tuesday December 14th, 2004 11:08:52 AM

The druid relaxes, the magic of his spell dissipating from him. He nods at Figments words. "Let us be gone at once, Talons. The sooner we reach this Blackshadow Hall the more time we have to prepare ourselves. I will scout ahead with Glannath." with that, he jumps into the air, once again to become his eagle form, and he immediately takes to the skies.

Glannath
Tuesday December 14th, 2004 12:29:41 PM

Woah!
Glannath dives low to get out of the way of some great 'thing' that takes to the skies all of a sudden.
Finding a thermal he climbs higher, a little ways away, watching as the great beast returns, then flies off once more.

He looks a bit spooked as Athalorn takes flight and joins him, still puzzling over the mystery animal.
Couldn't eat it, that was for sure.

Brother Bertram
Tuesday December 14th, 2004 12:32:44 PM

Bertram grins, his uncertainties forgotten for a moment as things seemed to go right for the nonce. He says a prayer of thanks to his gods then keeps an eye out for any other surprises to appear from the Culverwood.

Tuesday December 14th, 2004 7:27:37 PM

(How long do Ingrge's spells last?)

Lian just watches and lets the others talk. The last time he personally dealt with something THAT large, he was almost eaten.

"Goodbye great one." He says as it leaves.

"I suggest, if possible, that we make haste to this path it spoke of. Truth be told, the sooner we're done the better I'll feel."

Gunther
Tuesday December 14th, 2004 10:32:49 PM

Breathing a huge sigh of relief, Gunther looks over at his kitty with a "that was a close one" kind of looks.

Gunther nods at the others. "Yes, let us make haste. Dough it vould be good for de spellcasters to rest before ve met up vith dis Elise again, I tink. Can ve do dat?" As Gunther awaits the response, he rechecks his equipment and prepares to set out.

Milo
Tuesday December 14th, 2004 10:42:17 PM

Smiling, Milo perks up, "Oooh, I like him. Yes, yes, lets get a move on. Who needs sleep when there is an evil plan to foil." The halfling looks most eager to be on the path.

Ingrge
Tuesday December 14th, 2004 11:48:35 PM

From out of nowhere Ingrge's voice again pops out. "Well that was a great waste of spells." Hmmph, maybe next time I shouldn't answer the Darn riddle."

(ooc: the spells from ingrge will last 8 hours)

Olana
Wednesday December 15th, 2004 1:44:34 AM

Olana is thinking that the whole situation is rather odd.
How did Elese fit into all this?
She watches the huge magical beast disappear and prepares to set off with the others.

Brother Bertram
Wednesday December 15th, 2004 4:19:26 AM

Bertram makes ready to leave, preparing for a long, forced march.

The elf just meditates prior to heading off. He will, however, bring up the fact that time is passing quickly.

Falin
Wednesday December 15th, 2004 10:05:14 PM

On the way Falin starts some small talk. "You know for how much I would like to filet Elese and then feel her to some evil creatures I can't help but wonder if she in some way wants Parnoth out of the way. She was the one that used the lantern to awaken the beast from its imprisonment. I wonder if she is out to grasp some prize that parnoth keeps and she needs the lantern to do it."

Hitting the Trail -- DM Donna
Thursday December 16th, 2004 7:06:54 AM

"Well...the horses have been told to go home if we don't come back, so we don't have to worry too much about them." K'Nara says. "We'll follow the trail--but I don't like the idea of a forced march...too many other things in this area can try to get the drop on us if we're unprepared. We will go as fast as we can, but we'll still have rest stops for the spellcasters to replenish their magic."

The Talons find and follow the path Aveler told them about--it continues southeasterly, away from the river. After hours of travel, they are able to stop to have the spellcasters rest and rememorize their spells. (OOC: yup, you guys are now "recharged.")

As soon as they are able, the Talons move on, following the trail through the eerie, unnatural growth for almost another day when the terrain around them suddenly changes. It looks as if someone sucked all the moisture out of the earth, turned everything grey and brown and stuck gigantic slabs of stone forcefully into the earth. It is here that the path turns southward and the path you are following heads into the desolate mountains.

"It's official..." K'Nara announces sarcastically, "...welcome to Izen..!"

As the party starts heading inward and upward, things start to heat up literally. Several times the talons come across sulfuric hot springs and even cracks in the earth that have steam whispering out.

Athalorn and Glannath are in the sky, doing their usual aerial recon work, when suddenly a pair of boulders sail up into the sky right by them. The missiles miss by a comfy margin--but Athalorn just knows that the huge rocks didn't get launched at the eagles by accident!

A mile or so down the trail behind the birds, the rest of the Talons hear the dull double-thud of...

"Thunder..?" K'Nara asks, squinting skyward, "...that's odd--no clouds in the sky..."

Anyone with Survival or Nature Knowledge and can make a check versus DC20 realizes that the sound really can't be thunder--it had to have been something else like an explosion or something.

Athalorn  d20+19=39
Thursday December 16th, 2004 1:18:45 PM

Athalorn is horrified by the lands around them as they travel - so unnatural, so devoid of life. When the boulders pass them by, the druid is confused, but knows this is no natural phenomonen. Shortly thereafter, he wheels around, and heads back to the party, fearing they ought to stick together at the moment...

Lian
Thursday December 16th, 2004 3:46:20 PM

After hearing the thunder, that reminds him of the two dragons who fought Parnoth some weeks back... lightning, thunder... seem to go hand in hand. In fact, one of those young dragons did end up fleeing, its alive somewhere.

The next day when the path is rained on by boulders, the monk speaks. "Well, it is quite clear that Izen has officially welcomed the Talons... right?" He looks at K'Nara, knowing the joke wasn't all the great.

Figment  d20+23=37 d20+23=31
Thursday December 16th, 2004 10:09:18 PM

Noting the thuds from the first day and then the second, the mage suggests "Why don't you ask Antalorn and his bird to not travel by air. It seems they are attracting attention - and may in fact be a signa to Elise that we are still well...". The mage keeps his feelers out for anyone attempting to scry (Spellcraft 37, Arcana 31).

Milo
Thursday December 16th, 2004 11:52:41 PM

"I'd like a closer look at what did that." Milo begins to move ahead, but pauses for direction, should some be forthcoming.

Gunther  d20+1=14

Startled by the sudden appearance of the boulders in front of them, Gunther instinctively drops to a crouch. "Vell, dat's not very nice. Somevon doesn't have very goot manners." Drawing his sword, Gunther checks around to see if he can find the stone throwers (Spot=14).

Scouting a little ways ahead, Olana trys to keep everyone from stepping in any hot stuff.
As for the thunder -
'It isn't natural, more like a distant magical explosion,' she offers by way of explanation.

She looks ahead ruefully. What a joy this land was going to be. The boulders come as no surprise.

Brother Bertram
Friday December 17th, 2004 4:30:04 AM

Bertram pulls up quickly as the rocks fell from the sky. He looked around trying to place the location they fell from.

Falin
Friday December 17th, 2004 5:22:27 AM

"I wonder if they are caused by some seismic anomoly. Or maybe some volcanic activity. Or someone just does not like us."

Whassup, Whassup? -- DM Donna
Friday December 17th, 2004 7:10:42 AM

DM OOC: I have edited my previous entry, but I have to apologize to Gunther's player--the party on the ground does NOT see any boulders landing--actually the double-boom was the sound everyone could hear in the distance. Only Athalorn and Glannath know that the sound was caused by the boulders launched at them. I accidently left a sentence at the end of the entry that I should not have.

We will just consider that Gunther and Milo--along with the rest of the party--are now alert and rather suspicious. There is nothing nearby to investigate just yet.

K'Nara frowns contemplatively.

"No clouds...nope, I don't think it was thunder after all..." she agrees with those announcing their opinions of the unnatural double-boom. Then she notices that Athalorn and Glannath are winging their way back to the group.

"What is it?" K'Nara asks the druid, definitely convinced that something was up. "Is something amiss..?"

Athalorn
Friday December 17th, 2004 10:35:35 AM

The druid lands within the party, after screeching at Glannath the command to keep hidden. He changes rapidly back into human form. "I am not sure what to report, for I know not the cause. But the noise you most probably heard was boulders being launched at Glannath and me. Let us take care now, we have unknown assailants ahead of us..."

Ingrge
Friday December 17th, 2004 5:38:30 PM

Listening to Athalorn for a moment, Ingrge smiles. Actually I expect thatthe thumps we heard were the boulders, that were aimed at you, hitting the ground. I would be very worried indeed if they were making that noise just by pssing through the air.

Milo
Friday December 17th, 2004 7:43:49 PM

Milo remains alert, "I'm prepared to investigate further if you'd like." The halfling keeps moving, urging others to do the same.

"I'll go with you Milo, if you wish?" Suggest the monk.

Gunther
Friday December 17th, 2004 11:59:00 PM

The warrior listens to Athalorn's report with rapt attention. "Boulders, huh? Vell lets just hope dat whoever threw dem hasn't found de rest of us yet. Dat could get interesting." Gunther is very wary to say the least.

Figment
Saturday December 18th, 2004 9:53:03 AM

"Staying together and as hidden as possible is probably the best course. Since you were in eagle form the assailant probably thought you were lunch and nothing more. If we continue our forced march we can get out of the area before we are discovered. It would also prevent Elise from possibly seeing us from her trail - which if only a 1/2 days difference in length will not be too far away.".

Falin
Saturday December 18th, 2004 4:56:01 PM

"But, if they were aiming at you then they have outstanding eyesight." Falin says while looking up, his hand blocking the sun. "We should not hide too close together either. One boulder would end the group."

Pressing On -- DM Donna
Saturday December 18th, 2004 7:10:53 PM

"It's not a good sign to have boulders launched at you when you're a high-flying eagle in the air..." K'Nara opines out loud. "...We all may as well go with Milo and see what's up the trail--if we're lucky, we might be able to do as Figment says and pass whomever--or whatever--it is before we're discovered." She sounds rather doubtful of this, though. There is little cover for all that the terrain is covered with rocks and sulfuric springs.

Moving quickly along the trail, the Talons begin to scale the first of several peaks that lay between them and the end of the passage...when another boulder lofts through the air and crashes to a landing in the middle of the path in front of them.

"Somehow, I don't think that Figment's idea is going to work..." K'Nara points out the obvious...as well as nodding at the pair of tall figures that loom at the top of the path:

Two obviously male humanoids with ruddy complexions...one has deep red hair on his head and face, giving him a shaggy appearance; the other has only a moustache and his hair is more orange in appearance. Both have blackened half-plate on over clothing that is red and orange and shades of brown...but, more importantly, both of them are about ten to twelve feet tall.

"Oh, great..." K'Nara mutters, eyeing the pair (who are smirking at the party), "...giants." She sighs.

"They COULD have hit us with the boulder, but they didn't..." she points out. "...any suggestions as to what to do next..?"

Figment
Saturday December 18th, 2004 10:27:25 PM

The mage sighs at their rotten luck. "Since if they wanted to hit us they could it seems to me they are not interested in killing us. Also, we cannot outrun them so somehow I think speaking to them would be the best approach - and hopefully they are in a good mood...".

Athalorn
Sunday December 19th, 2004 4:08:45 AM

The druid ignores Ingrge's remark, as the rest of the party seem to do. Upon seeing the giants, he agrees with Falin and Figment both. "Let us spread out as Falin suggests, then approach these giants."

Falin
Monday December 20th, 2004 6:25:44 AM

"Perhaps we can confuse them with a riddle." Falin says with a smile. He knocks an arrow and gets ready, just in case.

'Polly yock doome yuck?' Olana whispers to Milo. 'What does that mean?'

Her eyes search for a weak spot, but she has to admit, they do look rather sturdy fellows.

Repeating Oneself -- DM Donna
Tuesday December 21st, 2004 6:34:42 AM

From the wondrously dangerous terrain that surrounds the party at present, you all can tell that you won't be able to easily or quickly skirt around the two giants--besides not knowing what lays immediately beyond them. They COULD be the only giants here...or there could be any number of giants just beyond the peak they are guarding.

It's anyone's guess at this moment.

"They know we're here already, Gunther," K'Nara points out in a low voice, "Besides--I doubt we have enough Invisible spells...or even enought time to cast them...before they could realize what we're up to and do something nasty in retaliation."

However...both Bertram and Figment know that this pair of giants have just told the party:

"You (DM OOC: actually a rather rude word for) trespassers--what do you think you're doing here?"

Judging by their tone, you can all tell that it is NOT a friendly question.

"Unless they're immediately threatening us with a fight of some kind," K'Nara tells the cleric and the wizard who can understand the giants' gutteral speech, "We don't want to have to battle these guys as well--we're trying to get to Blackshadow Hall. Try to...sweet-talk them if you can." The chestnut-maned woman's expression, however, conveys her lack of conviction that one can sweet-talk a giant.

DM OOC: I'll be taking the conversation to email once Bertram and Figment post their responses to the giants' initial question to the party.

Figment
Tuesday December 21st, 2004 7:38:08 AM

He says to the K'Nara, "They are asking what we are doing trespassing here.". He turns to the giant and begins to speak with him quite eloquently - and kindly - in their gutteral tongue. (Suppose I'll wait for email).

Brother Bertram
Tuesday December 21st, 2004 3:48:27 PM

Turning to K'nara, Bertram raises a brow at the phrase, 'sweet talk'. Nodding he turns back to answer the Giants. With an grin on his face, Bertram answers back in the language of the creatures. "Kiena djea sioe eisl dew duros Parnoth, fina diu cundi dew e` Domi e' Gargul, ipik grandor er finis!" Bertram glances at Figment for a moment then back at K'nara. "I hope this sweet talk works, they appear quite angry."

What a strange language, thinks the elf as Figment and Bertram talk to the giants.

Of course she gets to wondering how Figment and Bertram know how to talk to giants in the first place. No doubt there were stories to be told about that!

While keeping her eye on things, she tries to look as tall as possible. No mean feat for a five footer.

Spot check DC 25 for any possible approaching danger.

The man shrugs at K'nara's comments. He wasn't talking about going invisible right now...maybe sneak off a bit. Sighing, he listens carefully to the mage and the cleric as they try to talk to the giants. They would see how the small talk worked out, then they'd find another way if they needed too. Gunther looks around nervously at the two giants, trying to see whether the "sweet talking" is working out alright (Sense Motive=11).

Athalorn just listens to the strange language, smirking at Milo's comment, and keeps an eye on Glannath.

No Speakee Common..? -- DM Donna
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 6:37:45 AM

Olana remains alert, but no other giants (or anything else) is in the area...thank goodness.

Figment's intention to try to negotiate with the large humanoids is cut off by Bertram's counter-challenge to the giants. The pair of males stand, blinking for a moment.

"What did you SAY???" K'Nara asks, her instincts telling her that Bertram's words didn't carry too much sweetness.

The younger-looking of the two giants scowls and reaches for a nearby boulder...but his older compatriot simply begins to laugh, speaking to Bertram directly. His sustained guffaws and pokes at the other giant eventually make the younger one relent his reach for the boulder and even chuckle (albeit reluctantly) at the joke the older giant finds in Bertram's dialogue.

After a moment or two of laughing, the older giant speaks again, his mirth subsiding quite a bit, the only thing he says that everyone in the party can retain is the last word of his speech: "...Gratbelch."

Both of the giants look at the party with a dark, penetrating stare.

"Whatever either of you might say..." K'Nara advises in a low hiss, "...try not to make it as close a call as Bertram's last comments...!"

Figment  d20+23=32
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 7:31:21 AM

Tensing a moment as Bertram's comment has a mixed reception, the mage chuckles with the older one. He then responds to the older one's statement in what sounds to be a more diplomatic way, knowing he could never have said what Bertram said and pulled it off. "We are going right by their lands. We need permission from their king - Gratbelch - to gain safe passage. I have asked for an audience. Stealth is not much of an option any more.".

The mage searches his mind for any reference to this clan of giants or a king Gratbelch (Knowledge Royalty/Nobility DC 32).

Ingrge
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 10:23:24 AM

Gratbelch? (ooc. was that a short a or a long a)

Watching the giants carefully Ingrge ponders soething that is bothering him. "Since when do giants live in these parts? The nearest giants are supposedly to be found in the eastern Scab, not in the borderlands of Izen and Emerald."

When Figment translates what is going on Ingrge shakes his head.

"Are we sure this is wise? Whe should be able to take these two, but who knows how many more will be around with their leader."

Falin
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 5:16:11 PM

"Is there any chance that they are not REALLY aware of our numbers? Could most of us travel with thm and one or two of us slip off to prepare our destination for guests? I am just afraid if we take the time for an audience we are going to loose and advantage we might have had with this short cut." Falin ponders for a moment. "Unless one or two of them might be enticed to accompany us and help..."

Lian
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 5:30:12 PM

"Their laughing, that has to be good, right?" He asks hopefully, knowing full well that it could be much worse.

Milo
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 7:41:27 PM

Milo's mirth dies down, and the halfling begins to grow impatient quickly, muttering to himself, "Any day now folks... while my clothes are still in fashion." Looking up at the two giants he comments, "Anybody here sprekenzie halfling? Take us to your leader... we're on a mission!"

Brother Bertram
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 8:00:28 PM

Bertram never takes his eyes from the giants before him. "I stated that we were on a quest to help save the kingdom and that it would be in thier best interest to help us rather than hinder us, more or less".

Olana
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 11:41:46 PM

Willing to take this latest turn of events in her stride, Olana is okay about meeting this 'Gratbelch' fellow.
It was one thing being in a hurry, it was quite another to be squashed flat beneath one of those boulders.

She's just glad someone can talk to these creatures.

Gunther
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 11:48:20 PM

The warrior looks rather impatient. "Vell dis is just fine and dandy. Not a problem...we'll just have a little tea vith dem...maybe dinner. And den de kitty can put on a show for dem after ve're done." Taking a deep breath, Gunther relaxes a little. "Dere goes our lead."

Figment
Thursday December 23rd, 2004 8:42:39 AM

Noting the concern of the others he mentions "I'm sure there will be more of them down this road. I would say staying together is the best approach. There seems to be a lot of them - according to them. We could probably turn back but then Elise would beat us there. They do not appear evil - just protective or their border."

What to Do..? -- DM Donna
Thursday December 23rd, 2004 4:13:19 PM

The two giants mutter between them--even Bertram and Figment can't say exactly what they speak of, because they are keeping their voices low.

Figment vaguely recalls some rumors of a clan called Fireheight that fell out of favor with their fellow giants in the Scab some years ago (surely not more than two decades..?)--the reason seemed to have something to do with a dispute over the disparity of tribute exchanged between the clans or something like that.

Finally the giants turn their attention back to Bertram and Figment.

"The Fireheight Clan is first in all things," the oldest says in his native tongue, "We care nothing for the petty concerns of the countries of small people...however, Gratbelch may wish to speak to you himself, as he holds both Domi and Gargul in great esteem. Weldon will fetch forth our leader whilst I keep an eye on you." The shaggy giant nods to the younger one, who departs. He unsheathes a greatsword and holds it at the ready as he stares at the Talons with a set expression.

"All right...NOW what?" K'Nara asks, as she still doesn't know exactly how the dialogue has gone.

Milo
Thursday December 23rd, 2004 7:34:14 PM

Seeing the size of the sword, Milo swallows... hard... and then reaffirms his position, standing with arms crossed, and a stern expression on his face.

Brother Bertram
Thursday December 23rd, 2004 8:01:44 PM

Bertram answers K'nara while they waited; "The one has went to fetch thier leader. He will probably wish to speak to us as this one claims he holds Domi and Gargul in great esteem. Either that or they are going to skewer us if they get the chance. I am betting on the latter." Bertram grins and runs his thumb along the edge of his axe, testing its sharpness. He murmurs a prayer to both of his gods as he waits for the giant leader to receive word of thier visit.

Olana
Friday December 24th, 2004 12:09:06 AM

"Do you think he'll be long?" asks the elf, wondering what to do while they wait for the giant leader. "Knowing our luck he'll be in the middle of his afternoon nap."

She gives the remaining giant one of her sweetest smiles.

Lian

The monk waits for the negotiations to conclude.

Falin
Saturday December 25th, 2004 2:00:07 AM

While he waits he will go through his stuff and check all of is gear for wear or damage.

Ingrge
Sunday December 26th, 2004 5:01:18 PM

Hmmmph, why are we waiting? Right now there are only two of them when the one leaves there will only be one. If we can't take out one giant we need to retire.

Lian
Monday December 27th, 2004 7:45:19 AM

Lian nods in agreement at Ingrge's statement.

"I agree, but do we really want to risk a clan of giants hunting us while we are on our mission? It seems their willing to talk."

Gunther
Monday December 27th, 2004 4:33:44 PM

The warrior just sits down on a boulder, impatiently waiting for something to happen.

Why Wait? -- DM Donna
Monday December 27th, 2004 5:33:00 PM

K'Nara glances Ingrge's way, then smiles.

It is NOT a nice smile.

"You know, you DO have a very good point there, Ingrge..." K'Nara says, rummaging through her backpack and bringing out the scimitar that was within it. Then she advances on the lone giant, holding the blade out in both hands as though to offer him the weapon.

"Wait until he's distracted...then dogpile on the giant." she orders the Talons, then speaks to the taller male:

"This is the best of blades--the finest you can expect to ever see..." the chestnut-maned leader of the party says.

Shaggy eyes the approaching female, but his gaze drops to the well-made weapon in her hands. His sword dips as he instantly evaluates the workmanship and the quality of the metalwork...

...how do the Talons react?

Lucia
Monday December 27th, 2004 6:21:25 PM

* It is about time you notice my superior workmanship, perfectly balanced weight, and sticking beauty. I was wondering how long it would take for you to ditch that blade for the far superior one. *

Falin
Monday December 27th, 2004 6:23:08 PM

Fallin begins to go up the left side of the path to the right side of the lone giant. Awaiting the sign to strike.

Lian
Monday December 27th, 2004 8:46:19 PM

Lian is not at all happy that the Talons have taken to dishonorable tactics, but he will backup his friends when needed.

Brother Bertram
Tuesday December 28th, 2004 6:26:24 AM

Bertram looks at Ingrge and K'nara with dismay plainly upon his face. Making a decision he steps in front of the lone giant, standing in the way of his friends. "Friends, We are not like this scum, surely we will act honorably in this?" Bertram keeps his axe lowered but his intention is plain.

Gunther
Tuesday December 28th, 2004 9:02:31 AM

The warrior grins at K'nara's order. Finally! Some action!! But then Bertram speaks up. Morals...why did everything have to be black and white...gray was really a whole lot easier. Gunther sighs. He takes up a position to the right of the giant but looks over at Bertram as he protects the giant. "Desperate times call for desperate measures. Ve don't vant to kill him, but ve need to get around him and qvickly. Come, Broder, surely you can see dat. Elise is slipping through our fingers. Ve need to move quickly, not stop for tea and a nice little chat."

Olana  d20+14=19 d20+16=33
Tuesday December 28th, 2004 7:02:53 PM

Olana stops absently chewing the end of her braid and responds to Ingrge.
'Yes but doesn't it depend on how long - ' She stops, seeing K'Nara pull her sword.

Immediately her eyes move to middle distance, and the quickest, safest way through.

Lian
Tuesday December 28th, 2004 7:25:57 PM

"Yes, I agree with Brother Bertram."

Milo
Wednesday December 29th, 2004 1:01:15 AM

Milo sheaths his weapons and stands resolute, "We had an agreement with the giant. It isn't a matter of whether or not we can 'take him.' This is a matter of principle that says we are to be heroes. A hero keeps his word, regardless of who he gives it to. Do not devalue your word." Milo moves to stand next to Bertram.

Test Passed...Mostly -- DM Donna
Wednesday December 29th, 2004 6:23:21 AM

K'Nara smiles at Lucia's words.

*I'm glad to see that you're in agreement with me...and I'm glad to see that most of the Talons obviously have misgivings about jumping the giant--not because of his size, but because of our mutual agreement that we Talons keep our word...even if it's implied.*

"Well, he's taken with the scimitar..." K'Nara points out to the others, "...maybe the weapon will be enough to get us by without having to fight anyone, eh..?"

After initially peering at the proffered weapon, Shaggy the Giant grunts something that Figment and Bertram roughly translate into "Not bad for a short sword..."

Shaggy returns to his alert status, glancing around at the various members of the party and gripping his sword in both hands. He doesn't attack anyone, though he has a frown on his face.

Brother Bertram
Wednesday December 29th, 2004 6:28:53 AM

Bertram sees the return and and frown and quickly questions the giant in his language. "What is the problem? Is your king coming or not? If he isnt we have to be moving on and quickly. Speak up you big lout!"

Lian
Wednesday December 29th, 2004 5:39:03 PM

The monk waits to see what happens.

Milo
Wednesday December 29th, 2004 8:10:24 PM

Satisfied that nothing bad is going to happen, Milo shrugs his shoulders, smiles, and moves quickly to Olana's side where he remains silent.

Gunther
Thursday December 30th, 2004 12:08:37 AM

The warrior sighs and reluctantly moves back away from the giant. Things were so much simpler when he was with the orcs... if it was weaker or smaller than you, you killed it. If not, you ran away. Still, there was that whole evil thing. Gunther finds a boulder to sit down on and starts cleaning his weapon.

Return of the King -- DM Donna
Thursday December 30th, 2004 6:41:57 AM

"Gratbelch comes at his own speed, dwarf," Shaggy says rudely, though his expression does show a bit of concern that his fellow giant hasn't returned yet, "The king of the Fireheight clan doesn't appease the smaller races...they appease him!"

"Watch it, dear Brother..." warns K'Nara, seeing and hearing the displeasure in the giant's voice, "...the last thing we need at this moment is to tick off a clan of giants..."

Thud...thud...thud...heavy footsteps approach before the cleric can translate out loud what Shaggy just growled to him.

The younger giant returns with an older giant in tow. This third giant is easily fifteen feet tall, with dark red hair and beard that is braided in a rather untidy manner.

"Who is it that disturbs King Gratbelch..?" demands the newcomer in Common. "And why should we bother to let ye pass through Fireheight territory?"

Falin
Thursday December 30th, 2004 10:22:50 AM

"Wow, that's not something you see everyday." Mutters Falin under his breath.

Lian
Thursday December 30th, 2004 8:27:47 PM

Lian looks at the red-headed leader. "Hey, didn't I just say that?!"

The elf looks at the giants, and for some reason, the thought enters his mind, 'They don't look so tough, we can take 'em.' He shakes the thought from his head.

Brother Bertram
Thursday December 30th, 2004 8:57:57 PM

Bertram grins insolently at the towering creature, "Well for one reason I am unsure you can stop us King of the Giants. We travel on a quest with the approval of Domi and Gargul. I would not want to offend powers such as these. What say you great King? Will you aid the powers of the World or merely be a note in history that tried to prevent the will of the Gods? Imagine if you were an aid to this great victory! I await your word Large One" Bertram holds out his holy symbol of Domi from his chest and opens his hand revealing the mark of Gargul to the giant's eyes.

Milo
Thursday December 30th, 2004 9:28:01 PM

Milo smirks thinking how easy it would be for him to pass through these lands completely undetected. However, the thought occurs to him that he really couldn't accomplish the goal at the end of the road by himself, and so he smothers the idea, and steals himself, waiting to hear the reply of the mighty giant king.

Olana
Thursday December 30th, 2004 11:34:16 PM

Olana stands watching, next to Milo (sensing within him a wild bundle of barely tamed energy), doing her best to appear pleasant and unthreatening. She hopes Bertram has the right ideas of diplomacy with these large fellows, otherwise things were going to get a bit exciting, and not in a nice way.

The Price of Passing Through -- DM Donna
Friday December 31st, 2004 7:18:35 AM

Gratbelch's small and beady eyes (...well, small and beady for a giant...) fix upon the dwarf.

"Whatever your mission is, dwarf," the King says loftily, "I wager 'tis doomed to fail with a stunted one as the leader for his higher-ups." However, it's clear that the sign of Gargul makes the giant bite off any other additional "humorous" comments. Gratbelch's gaze goes from the shorter dwarf to the taller human woman holding out the scimitar in offering.

"Tribute is all to my kind, as ye well know," Gratbelch says (and, indeed, Bertram and Figment are well aware that the ego and prestige of most giants is directly tied to the loot they extort from the smaller races that they bully, as well as the value of the tributes exchanged between clans), "I would have a wagonload of gold and a wagonload of iron for allowing you passage..." The King shakes his head and sighs gustily--and you can all smell the fetid stench of old ale and unbrushed teeth from where you stand.

"...however, 'tis obvious you have no wagons," Gratblech points out, "...though you DO seem to have Domi and Gargul on your side. Although the offering you're making is rather small, I'm prepared to accept it."

K'Nara sighs with relief and steps forward to hand Shaggy the scimitar.

"Yes...she's a mite small, but I'm sure she'll warm my bed nicely..." Gratbelch leers at the redheaded bladesinger. K'Nara stiffens.

"WHAT???" the leader of the Talons demands. "Hey--I'm not part of the tribute, you big lumpy lout! Just the sword!!!"

The youngest giant, however, reaches for K'Nara--

DM OOC: Shaggy and the youngest giant are only about fifteen feet from K'Nara...all three of them are about 60 feet from the rest of the Talons.

Gratbelch is about 25 feet to the right of Shaggy, the young giant and K'Nara, but he's also another 35 feet away from them, too.

The terrain is angled and rocky (you were trying to go through some peaks before you were interrupted, if you recall), but there is nothing by way of good cover where the Talons are at the moment--neither boulders nor scrub.

After you've posted your actions, I'll come up with and email the players a diagram of what character is where.

Falin
Friday December 31st, 2004 9:22:22 AM

Falin runs forward in front of K'Nara.

"The female human is not for the giving. She belongs to another and we are all sworn to protect her."

Falin continues, "I recognize this may inconvenience you so," Falin reaches into his pack and pulls out a weathered package wrapped in leather, "as a token of trust I will leave you with this," Falin swallows hard has he offers up the package, "I am a Bowyer and Fletcher and these are my tools. Nothing can ever replace these because these have been passed down through my family for generations. Their worth to me is more than the entire Wold. I will leave these with you, but I will return for them and when I do I will craft for you a bow like none your kind has ever seen."

"Picture this your lordship, "Falin steps closer, "you would be sung about by bards becasue of the bow I would craft for you. You would live forever in the minds of people all across the wold because of your bow and the great ability you would wield with it."

Brother Bertram
Friday December 31st, 2004 9:44:33 AM

Bertram sighs and grips his axe but even now he cant help but grin and to K'nara he whispers, "Well you should really consider what they are asking for, Anything for the peace talks, eh?"

Gunther
Friday December 31st, 2004 9:58:14 AM

As the giant reaches for K'nara, Gunther jumps off his boulder, grabbing his two-bladed sword in the process. "Like de oders said, de lady is not part of de deal." He starts moving toward Shaggy, itching for a fight. After all, look where diplomacy has gotten them so far. They should have jump the one when they had the chance. Now they're going to have to fight three giants.

Milo
Friday December 31st, 2004 9:11:23 PM

Worried about what they'll attempt to claim next, Milo draws his short sword and steps between Olana and the giants. A snarl escapes his gritted teeth.

Lian moves slowly off to one side. (About 60ft)

Olana
Saturday January 1st, 2005 3:15:15 PM

Olana rolls her eyes.
"Are giants always like this? We'd better start negotiating, and fast. I have that truthsayer shortsword in my back pack, if that'll help."

Athalorn
Monday January 3rd, 2005 4:51:42 AM

ooc: Apologies for my protracted absence - real life taking over I'm afraid.

Athalorn has watched the discussion so far, and waits to see how Falin's offer is received. However, he has a strong feeling that his spear will be needed soon, and so clutches it firmly in his hand.

Ingrge
Monday January 3rd, 2005 8:35:37 AM

(Sorry all I got called out of town on a family emergency.)

Raising his eyes at K'nara's rashness of stepping forward and of her look, Ingrge chuckles for a moment when he realixzes how what he said might have been misunderstood.

As Gratbelch reaches down for K'nara, Ingrge activates his staff and suddenly K'nara is not very clear any more. In fact she seems to be a bit blurred and out of phase. (displacement)

Lian retrieves a potion of shield and drinks it down. (Dodge vs the young one) Still standing 60ft off from the group.

Fight! Fight! (Combat Round 1) -- DM Donna  d100=1 d20+14=26 d20+14=23 d6+2=7 d6+2=6
Tuesday January 4th, 2005 7:32:00 AM

Shaggy frowns, speaking in his native tongue, to which Gratbelch replies in kind. The youngest giant looks only all the more eager to seize K'Nara as he takes another step forward and continues to reach for her.

"Well, hey--don't forget your scimitar..!" the human bladesinger snarls, flipping the weapon up so that she now holds its hilt--then throwing the weapon directly at the giant reaching for her.

The scimitar sinks into Youngestone's left shoulder, causing him to roar in pain--

"Dang! I missed!" K'Nara bemoans. "I was aiming for his big, fat head..!"

DM OOC: K'Nara's throw is a Crit Hit for a total of 13hpd on Youngestone. Since just about everyone in the Talons was expecting the worst, you all get to act first in this round before the Giants can.

Figment  13d6(6+1+1+6+3+6+4+1+6+6+1+4+4)=49
Tuesday January 4th, 2005 8:35:33 PM

The mage decides that the chieftan should get at least a taste of what he's up against but still hold out the possibility that he might see reason. He blasts the giant reaching for K'Nara with a Freezing Sphere. He places it such that it hits the top of the giant but leaves K'Nara out of range (49 DMG). Glaring at the chieftan he retorts in his native language in a way seeming very unfitting for one of such normal aplomb. He glances at Bertram knowing his attempt was not as menacing sounding - but with the spell hopes it has the right effect.

Milo
Tuesday January 4th, 2005 9:12:15 PM

Olana
Wednesday January 5th, 2005 12:44:51 AM

Olana takes a few steps back from Milo then she can get a clear aim with her bow. She is disappointed that it has come to this. Stupid grabbing, greedy creatures.
A shadow of her distant cousins' scowl paints her features as she holds, hoping the giants will have second thoughts after the spells thrown their way.

Wednesday January 5th, 2005 7:11:58 AM

Both the scimitar throw and Figment's Ball of Frost send Youngestone reeling--he is definitely hurting after the icy spell thrown upon him...he nearly loses consciousness for all the damage he's suffered in one round (OOC: however, he made his Fort save versus DC20.)

But he isn't dead.

Milo and Lian move forward, with Lian ending up within ten feet of Gratbelch, who is now back-pedaling in retreat from a giant killer...rabbit.

(Just a note--it is Giant-Sized rabbit with pointy teeth and ears that look more like bat wings...thus a killer rabbit. ;) )

Gunther pushes forward to reach K'Nara's left side, and his feline sidekick is quick to trail him.

Bertram's advance brings him to within 15-20 feet of K'Nara's right side.

Falin's arrow strikes true, though the damage done to the giant is more irritating than debillitating.

Gratbelch roars something that seems to spur on Youngestone. Shaggy hesitates a moment, but adds his blows to the fray--

--Youngestone hacks at the elven archer who dared fire upon his king...the first of three blows is the only one to connect, but it hits Falin for 22hpd.

Shaggy uses his own greatsword against the newly-arrived Gunther. The older giant's experience serves him well as two of his blows land on the trainer of big cats, delivering 55hpd in one round. (Gunther must make a Fort check versus DC20 or fall unconscious.)

Gratbelch--in his panic to avoid getting bitten by the phantasmal "killer rabbit"--grabs Lian up (causing the monk 15hpd) and then HURLS the elf at his imagined foe.

OOC: I sent off that Combat Round 2 map before I resolved this aspect of the Round...I'll send another one to update where Lian ends up. Meanwhile, Lian must roll a Fort Save versus DC20. Making the save will halve the 22hp damage he'd otherwise suffer when he finally smacks into the ground.

K'Nara takes her part of the round to draw Lucia from the scabbard slung across the female fighter's back.

DM OOC: I'm emailing an updated map as well as the translation of the Giant dialogue to the various members of the party.

The monk's vision suddenly goes black as he's engulfed in the massive smelly hand of the giant. Then suddenly, Ground, sky, ground, party, ground, sky... he's hurled through the air, flipping head over heels.
Lian reaches (AC 26) out for one of the giants ears or hair to slow his fall. But all for not, he's just too high, he cruises past the party.

He sumersaults in midair to try to slow and shorten his descent. (Tumble of 23 to reduce damage from fall by 10ft)

Crash! The elven monk comes to a sudden stop in a small dusty crater. (Fort save 15, failed) The air is knocked from the monk. Lian tries to breathe for a few seconds, but his lungs won't fill. He gasps, getting a small lung of air and dust as he stands (Move Action), coughs and wobbles.

Lian relaxes slightly and glows momentarily. (Wholeness of Body, healed 18 hit points, Standard Action)

A glare of fire glints in the monk's eyes, as the severely wound elf begins to move toward the giants. He cusses in Draconic, hissing something sounding like, "I'm not a boulder you #$%&?$* giant."

(ADMOOC: Just a quick question. Isn't grabbing a grapple and if so, why didn't Lian get an opposing check? Also, grabbing and throwing are two seperate attacks, right?

As for the massive damage inflicted on Gunther in one round... if your using the variant mass damage scale on page 27 in the DMG, its 50 points of damage to a medium creature from a SINGLE attack, not a single round. The giant took two attacks on Gunther, or at least your post reflected that. Of course it could a special feat the giant has that I don't know about. ;)
This isn't me as a player complaining, I'm talking as your assistant DM, Donna :))

Brother Bertram  d8+9=13
Wednesday January 5th, 2005 7:30:55 PM

Seeing he is not close enough to attack, Bertram lowers his axe, praying to Domi for healing for his fearless companions.

(OOC Mass Cure Light Wounds-Everyone injured heal 13)

Milo  d20+19=29
Wednesday January 5th, 2005 8:04:24 PM

Moving quickly, Milo dashes past Gunther. Dropping into a somersault, the halfling tumbles to the other side of Shaggy, and stands flanking the giant, opposite Gunther. (OOC: Made a Tumble check DC 29 to avoid provoking an attack of opportunity while moving past the giant.)

Olana  d20+12=21 d20+12=15 d20+7=20 d20+7=18 d8+3=10 d8+3=7 d8+3=8 d8+3=8
Wednesday January 5th, 2005 11:24:28 PM

Shifting to aim at the giant called Shaggy, Olana fires arrows in quick succession.
(Feats - Precise Shot, Rapid Shot -2 penalty)
Hits ACs 21, 15, 20, 18 for 10, 7, 8, 8

out of the corner of her eye, she sees Lian come sailing past. Now THAT was going to hurt. She'll glance back afterwards to see if he gets up on landing.

Ingrge  5d8(6+8+5+7+6)=32
Wednesday January 5th, 2005 11:31:11 PM

Watching and waiting to see if the his spell is actally going to take care of Gratbelch, he sees that while it has scared him it doesn't seem to have killed him, so Ingrge levels his staff at the giant leader and lets fly with a bolt of searing light. 32 points no save.

Gunther (AC 26, HP 31/75) Animated Shield  d20+7=23 d20+16=34 d20+16=17 d8+8=16 d6=4
Thursday January 6th, 2005 12:47:51 AM

Wham..wham!! Before he even can figure out what's happening, a huge sword slices down into Gunther, slamming into the warrior and carving through armor and flesh. Blood flows freely to the ground and pools at the panther's feet and the mighty warrior is taken down a couple of notches as he staggers and struggles to get the world in a mostly upright position (Fort=23). Shaking his head, Gunther stares up at the two identical giants standing before him. Slowly Gunther's vision clears and the two figures merge into one very real, very angry Shaggy, A feline grin merges on his face as he spots Milo flanking the fellow.

Moving forward, Gunther engages the giant and swings for his hairy calves, determined to get a couple of his own in before he goes down. His sword arcs forward with deadly accuracy (AC 34/17 no crit for 20 hp dam).

I'll give you a few more hours to have as many PCs as possible post for this round of Combat...

Falin (45 hp, AC 23)  d20+12=17 d20+8=24 d8+2=10
Thursday January 6th, 2005 11:48:32 AM

Falin takes the blow and staggers a bit, but is quick to regain his footing. Falin draws back and aims for his attackers sword weilding hand. (OCC: I screwed up on the first roll. I didn't take into account the negative for targeting the hand.) The arrow strikes AC 24 and does 10 hp of damage.

Athalorn (sub Jay B)
Thursday January 6th, 2005 4:50:13 PM

(lasts 9 minutes)

The druid casts call lightning storm (a prepared spell on his sheet).(casting time, full round)

OOC: What is the weather like currently? Cloudy? Clear?

Figment  11d6(2+5+4+6+1+3+3+6+5+6+4)=45
Thursday January 6th, 2005 8:12:01 PM

The mage decides a little electricity should liven things up and he casts an unusually arcing bolt of lightning that he send straight at the young one. Once there it arcs toward the old one standing next to him and the king as well - but fails to make it to the king as he is too far away. (45 DMG to Young one, 22 to the old one - Reflex save for 1/2). "Stupid dolts..." he muses as he sees some fairly innocent creatures dying that really don't have to if they will just use a little common sense. Oh well...

Lian (AC 29 or 30, 28 of 47hps)
Thursday January 6th, 2005 10:14:19 PM

The monk just stands there, regaining his composure.

Friday January 7th, 2005 6:50:19 AM

OOC: Don't forget--everyone who suffered any damage in Round 2 now has 13hp healed up thanks to Brother Bertram's "Mass Heal" spell.

Lian lands ungracefully, but between his monk abilities and Brother Bertram's spell, the damage he suffers fades away.

Milo now flanks Shaggy--the nimble halfling easily outmaneuvering the oversized giant. (OOC: Shaggy's AoO roll was only 21.)

Two of Olana's four arrows hit the giant that Milo has somersaulted past, causing 18hpd.

Ingrge's Searing Light strikes Gratbelch, causing the king to bellow something in Giantish. (The odds are quite good that it's an obscenity of some kind.)

Gunther's damage to Shaggy makes the giant grimace.

Falin's arrow sinks into Youngestone's sword hand.

Athalorn gears up his magical storm, frowning inwardly because it's been dry and cloudless for the past forty-eight hours.

Figment's own spectacular bit of lightning fries Youngestone to a crisp--the overeager giant falls to the ground in a large, smoldering heap. Shaggy manages to dodge most but not all of the electricity. (OOC: the younger giant--who didn't have many HPs left--failed his Reflex save; Shaggy made his.)

The panther at Gunther's heels attempts to bite the ankles of Shaggy, but the hairy giant manages to dance out of the way.

As soon as the fried giant falls down, though, K'Nara immediately charges Gratbelch, holding Lucia in both hands, screaming at the top of her lungs and looking like a charging Fury from one of the Nine Planes of Hell (if you believed in such legends, that is.) Although able to close the distance between them, K'Nara can't attack on this round.

Gratbelch sees that the tall human woman is a little upset, so he draws his own sword...

Shaggy yells something over his shoulder at Gratbelch, who growls a reply.

Shaggy growls himself and then strikes at the targets in front of him: the panther, Gunther and Falin. The feline is sent hurtling back with an obviously fatal wound slicing open her belly (ooc: suffers 22hpd and so is now at -2hp); Gunther gets hacked for another 14hpd; and Falin's wounds add up to 23hp.

DM OOC: New map & translations forthcoming to the players.

Figment  13d6(2+4+6+6+6+6+4+2+5+1+1+6+1)=50
Friday January 7th, 2005 8:27:48 AM

The mage winces at Gratbelch's description of Ingrge's family parentage. "He wouldn't like that...". Seeing that the battle is not going to be avoided and that the king is the one egging it on, he moves to his left and casts again. He blasts Shaggy and the king with a cone of icy energy this time, making sure once again that he aims it so that it is above the head of those in front of him and that of the charging warrior woman (50 DMG - sv for 1/2). He makes sure to nail the king but tries to get Shaggy as well.

Ingrge  9d6(4+5+6+6+3+5+6+2+1)=38
Friday January 7th, 2005 5:31:12 PM

Chuckling at Gratbelch's antics he realizes what spell Figment is casting and adds a bit of near opposite enegry to the attack as well. knowing that he can not reach the king he sends his spell crashing over the heads of his fellows striking Shaggy squrae in the upper chest. (lightening bolt)38 points reflex DC20 for 19 points

Milo  d20+18=37 d20+18=28 d20+18=37 d20+18=26 d20+13=29 2d4(3+4)+4=11 5d6(4+2+6+2+5)=19 2d4(3+3)+4=10 5d6(6+5+5+2+2)=20 d4+2=5 5d6(3+4+1+6+1)=15
Friday January 7th, 2005 7:47:46 PM

Flanking Shaggy, Milo attacks the giant, striking key arteries in his legs. The halfling's sword is a blur as it does its work.(OOC: Critical threat with a 37, hopefully confirms on a 28 for 30 points of damage. Critical threat with a 37, hopefully confirms on a 26 for another 30 points of damage. Last attack hits AC 29 for 20 points of damage. That is a total of 80 points of damage to Shaggy.)

Lian (AC 29 or 30, 41 of 47hps)  d20+11=18 d20+19=39
Friday January 7th, 2005 11:54:46 PM

Lian breaks into a run toward Gratbelch (120ft), leaping over the giant's body in front of him and is unable to attack this round.
(If he has to, the monk will leap over the large corpse of Youngestone, running Jump over the giant's bloated body, Jump 18, Tumble 39)

Gunther (AC 26, HP 17/75) Animated Shield  2d8(6+7)+3=16
Saturday January 8th, 2005 12:05:47 AM

Primal, protective instincts fill the animal trainer as he sees his kitty fall to the ground mortally wounded. Irregardless of the personal danger, Gunther rushes over to the panther and lays his hands on her as he murmurs something in orcish (Cure Moderate Wounds on panther). He feels the tingle of magic flow through his body and into the panthers as he activates his tattoo (16hp healed).

Athalorn (sub Jay B)  5d6(5+1+2+6+3)=17
Saturday January 8th, 2005 12:08:15 AM

(Call Lightning Storm, lasts 9 minutes)

A finger of lightning strikes Gratbelch just as K'Nara and Lian get close to the giant leader. (standard action, reflex DC 19 for half, 17 electrical damage)

Brother Bertram  d8+9=17
Saturday January 8th, 2005 2:56:26 PM

Bertram, torn between his ancestral hatred of the giant race, and his uncertainty of his ability to hit the creatures, and his duty as a Healer, cause him to again cry out to Domi to heal his his friends. Even as he feels the power leave his body, he begins to ponder that perhaps, this is to be his role in this affair. As soon as the power leaves him Bertram moves towards the feline praying that it was included in the healing power of Domi.

(OOC Mass Cure Light Wounds-17 healed on anyone injured-I pray that the cat is well too?)

Falin (HP 22, AC 23)  d20+12=27 d8+2=5
Monday January 10th, 2005 6:27:37 AM

Seeing the cat go reeling Falin attempts to get Youngstones attention focused on himself while Gunther runs to save his friend. Falin looks at Youngstone, takes aim again, and fires (DC 27 for 5 hp).

Olana
Monday January 10th, 2005 10:06:01 PM

Figuring the others had plenty going on for Shaggy, Olana starts running flat out to get in arrow range for Gratbelch.
She moves as fast as she can.

Combat Round 4 -- DM Donna  d20+15=21 d20+15=29 d20+6=20 d20+6=17 d20+11=19 d20+5=8 d20+20=35
Tuesday January 11th, 2005 6:53:09 AM

The King--being the primary focus of Figment's Cone blast, roars in pain...the mage definitely scored maximum damage on him. Shaggy, however, manages to weather the part of the iciness that strikes him.

Ingrge's lightning zaps Shaggy for 19hpd.

Milo does major damage to Shaggy--the giant is swaying on his feet.

Lian bounds back up to K'Nara's right side, once more within striking range of the Giant King.

Gratbelch bellows once more as Athalorn's lightning strikes him. The King is getting crispy around the edges...

Gunther's healing and Brother Bertram's spell combine to restore 33hp to the panther. Gunther and any other damaged PCs are healed for 17hp.

Falin fires into the unmoving Youngestone, greatly angering Shaggy.

Olana moves up so that she is now roughly between Figment's and Bertram's positions--within arrow range of both Shaggy and the King.

K'Nara spins Lucia in an attempt to strike Gratbelch, but between avoiding getting hit by the cold and lightning and the giant's own dodging of Athalorn's attack, her blows miss.

Shaggy shouts something in Giantish, to which Gratbelch replies in an angry sort of yell. Shaggy, however, shifts his focus onto Falin and swings down with his sword, snarling something that does not sound Giantish in the least.

Everyone except Milo, Lian and K'Nara can roll a Spot check versus DC18 to notice that Shaggy is striking down upon Falin's head--but with (strangely enough) the flat of his oversized blade. Any PC with the Spellcraft skill can roll a check versus DC15 to recognize that Shaggy is speaking some kind of magic effect activation phrase.

Shaggy's odd blow strikes Falin right upon the crown of his head with an echoey sort of hollow "BOING" sound...

...the archer promptly vanishes!

Nobody needs translation services to tell that Gratbelch is now cursing up a storm. He grabs as something around his neck and throws it on the ground, causing an explosion of golden sparkles that poof up and then settle on Gratbelch, Shaggy and the giant on the ground.

Immediately both Shaggy and the King look a lot healthier.

The giant on the ground, however, remains unmoving and unchanged.

DM OOC: translations & a map update are in the email to the players.

Oh...and the giants have AC21.

Athalorn (sub Jay B)  5d6(4+2+2+6+5)=19
Tuesday January 11th, 2005 7:19:32 AM

(Call Lightning Storm, lasts 9 minutes)

The druid activates his boots(free action, for 1 round), moves forward 60 ft and point his finger and the giant(Gratbelch) again(standard action, reflex DC 19 for half, 19 electrical damage)

Figment (Sub Jay B)  5d4(4+3+1+2+2)+5=17
Tuesday January 11th, 2005 7:31:50 AM

OOC: If I may be so bold, I'll sub for a bit for Figgy. Forgive me, I don't have his spell list.

The mage jockeys for position to see the King just a little better, moving NW of his current position. He casts Magic Missile(17 damage, no save) at Gratbelch.

Lian (AC 29 or 30, 47hps)  d20+13=19 d20+13=21 d20+10=29 2d6(4+3)+2=9 2d6(1+1)+2=4 2d6(4+2)+2=8
Tuesday January 11th, 2005 7:44:32 AM

(Dodge vs Gratbelch, AC 30)

Feeling the healing hand of Domi once more, the monk steps forward and lays into the giant's kneecaps. (Flurry of Blows, all three are Stunning Attacks, Fort DC 19 or be stunned for a round.)
The monk tingles from the electricity is in the air and so nearby.

His first blow slims off the giants kneepad, but the others are true (AC 19, 21 and 29 for miss(9 damage to his kneepad), 4 and 8 damage)

In Elven, Lian speak to K'Nara. "I'll try to move to flanking positon."

Gunther (AC 26, HP 34/75) Animated Shield  d20+14=29 d20+9=15 d20+14=28 d20+6=18 d8+8=15 d6=4 d8+8=16 d6=2
Tuesday January 11th, 2005 10:01:18 AM

The big cat trainer breathes a sigh of relief as the panther rises to her feet. A murderous look settles on his face as he spins around and lays into Shaggy. His sword slices and slashes around the giant's calves as he dodges the magic flying in the air around him. With two powerful blows, Gunther manages to connect with the giant (AC 29 for 22 shock, AC 28 for 18 flame) as he screams a guttural orcish war cry "Tod zeichnet nahe mit jedem schwingen meiner klinge!!!"

Milo  d20+18=36 d20+18=32 d20+18=30 d20+13=19 d4+2=4 5d6(6+4+6+2+5)=23 d4+2=4 5d6(5+6+1+2+6)=20
Tuesday January 11th, 2005 7:46:36 PM

Maintaining his flanking position on Shaggy, Milo becomes a blur as he continues to lash out at the giant. (OOC: Hit AC 36 for 27 hit points damage; Hit AC 32 for 24 hit points damage; the 3rd roll was a mistake, I shouldn't have rolled that; the fourth hits AC 19, which I'm fairly sure misses. So a total of 51 hit points damage.)
