Now Leaving the Emerald Kingdom -- DM Donna d100=37 d100=11 d100=46 d100=53 Monday November 15th, 2004 6:30:42 AM
K'Nara cannot help but smile when Ingrge is moved to speak...he has the wisdom and the willpower to rule, and the human bladesinger reinforces her personal opinion that he should do so when Parnoth is off the throne...
...but that is for a future date. For now, other things call for the Talons to attend to.
"This matter is settled for now." K'Nara announces. "Talons support each other in battle, and we support each other in public. Disagreements may abound in private if need be...but we have to keep going. Rest and then on to Izen."
The night passes with none of the watches reporting anything unusual. Spellcasters refresh their spells. Everyone gets what rest they can. Any remaining wounds are healed so that the party is whole, hale and hearty upon the morrow.
Glannath's behavior lets Athalorn know that there is something unusual ahead when the party moves on. Just before they reach the Lygn River, the Talons are greeted with a very grim sight:
Elven-built homes have been destroyed and many of the trees in the immediate area are uprooted and dying. As the stunned party approaches, they can see that now there are only 6 adult males and 5 adult females remaining along with 5 younger non-adult elves--they are obviously trying to salvage what they can before moving on. K'Nara approaches them carefully, for they are fearful, but relax when she explains her party's identity and purpose.
The survivors tell a story about a group of lizard-like beings, who came and destroyed the village in the name of Parnoth, and after chaining them, sent the others away, with a few guards. The rest of the Parnothians seem to have crossed the river into Izen.
"They destroyed our homes and even killed trees!" the oldest of the males--Wainrite--says with almost a sob. "You'd've thought they'd steal our livestock or take coins and goods--but all they were interested in was inflicting damage on ourselves and our personal abodes!"
The elves will be leaving this area, taking with them what they'll be needing, but Wainrite tells K'Nara that there are a pair of draft horses and a large, covered cart that she can use should she and the party need it for their trip into Izen.
"My storage shed has plenty of barrels, too," Wainrite adds, "But you'll have to fill them yourself."
"Thank you...and good luck." K'Nara replies. The elves leave their shattered former home as the leader of the Talons directs Olana to assess the horses and that cart.
"I know we'll be needing a way to transport water with us," K'Nara tells the party, "Izen is a barren wasteland--no greenery, no cover and practically no water as well."
The party can prepare here to go into Izen--spending the night if they must. Anyone who has notified me of any Catacombs purchases and/or changes in their PC sheets can now put them into effect. Tomorrow's post will deal with entering Izen, so if there is anything your PC wishes to be sure they have for the trip, now is the time to post trying to acquire it.
Lian Monday November 15th, 2004 7:05:40 AM
The monk listen to everyone who replies to Ingrge, and simply nods in agreement to most of what is said. "I will defend the Kingdom and the Talons with my life's blood. I swear that to Domi."
Bertram [Sub Jay B] Monday November 15th, 2004 7:09:58 AM
Bertram listens and continues with the group. The dwarf blesses the remains of the man before heading off.
When reaching the village, the cleric attends to those who are hurt and ailing. He helps gather their things.
He prepares spells that will supply water and food for the group.
Athalorn Monday November 15th, 2004 12:33:25 PM
The druid has already taken to the skies when Ingrge stops to speak, so hears none of his words. Athalorn is pleased he was not the only one to disagree with Figment, however.
As they travel, Athalorn stays at a distance from the party, flying with Glannath instead. He camps away from the others too, his feelings for some of the Talons torn, though his faith in others strong.
At the elven village, he stops in stunned silence. then, gliding down in horrow, lands amongst the dying trees, singing an Eagle's lament for the forest, and sadness swallowing his heart. He is devastated.
In eagle form still, he prays to the great Culverwood to aid him, and calls forth its power to help the precious greenery around him. (ooc: Athalorn casts Plant Growth on the area to help its recovery, and casts it again in the morning, and again if needs be, until he has done his utmost to help this part of the forest recover)
Glannath Monday November 15th, 2004 1:49:45 PM
Unaware of the mental turmoil down below, Glannath circled above, swooping now and then before gaining height. He is glad of Athalorn's company as the group continues south, finding a high perch overnight.
On the day after, something has him on edge and his flight becomes erratic, looking for danger, and no doubt alerting Athalorn that something is up. The sharp scent of spilled sap and deforestation. Just a small patch, but that usually meant trouble. Men and burning, and dead meat. Not the best place to be.
Olana Monday November 15th, 2004 2:07:17 PM I'd have probably killed him, too, broods the elf, watching the flickering flames of the funeral pyre. Was there a shame attached to that? Possibly. Did it make her a monster, as Milo suggested? It was starting to get easy to kill, and it wasn't as if there was a lack of justification for it, either. It was going to be tough, to work together like Ingrge said, if they were going to agonize over things like this. But then where was the line drawn? And who was going to draw it?
Not able to think of anything rational to say, Olana lets it stew. The events of the following day only add to the confusion. It was a welcome relief to be given the task of seeing to the horses.
Gunther Monday November 15th, 2004 6:33:09 PM
The warrior shrugs at K'nara's speech. He really didn't approve of what the magic user had done...after all, it wasn't that long ago that he and the mage would probably have been enemies. But that was then and this was now. Smiling, Gunther begins filling the casks with the nearest source of water. Not that he thought he'd need much of it with his new equipment, but the others would...and hard labor always clears his mind.
Milo Monday November 15th, 2004 8:14:50 PM
After Milo says his piece, he lets the matter drop for the time being. Right is right and wrong is wrong, and Milo's mother taught him the difference. As they move along Milo whistles a merry tune. When arriving at the destroyed homes, he quiets down and sobers a bit. Milo lends a hand with tracking down horses, cart, and water for the trip into Izen.
Figment Monday November 15th, 2004 8:31:23 PM
The mage's eyes harden at Milo's words. "All this coming from a being who himself slit the throats of two reprobates we detained - in that case you beat me to the punch. And now would imply that I am evil... you have indeed changed, Milo. Changed indeed...". He lets the matter drop as K'Nara asks and carries on with the others, not bothering to reiterate his committment to the Talons.
As they question the settlers, he asks which way the prisoners were taken and tries to deduce their most likely destination.
Into Izen -- DM Donna d20=15 d20=17 Tuesday November 16th, 2004 6:26:31 AM
The covered wagon with its casks and draft horses are easily made ready--it is as the elves said: while the homes of the natives here had deliberately been ransacked and/or destroyed, those with outbuildings and the small shops hadn't been pillaged or damaged. It was as though the troops of Parnoth were seeking only to demoralize the elves on a personal basis rather than on a material one.
"Since we now have the wagon," K'Nara points out, "We don't have to double up on the horses..." Indeed, the wagon can hold up to six passengers: three on the plank seat used while reining the horses and three within the wagon itself. The casks take up almost all of the rear half of the wagon, so that those riding inside the covered portion would have to get in and out in the front.
Athalorn gets to cast a spell to help the Culverwood, which helps repair a lot of the immediate damage, though the trees that had been uprooted are now beyond saving. As one who is akin to the forest, he can feel the area respond with renewed vigor and...something else..? (Athalorn must roll a Sense Motive check versus DC20 to figure out if there is anything else there. Olana can make this roll, too, as she is a ranger.)
The party sets off for the Lygn, with Athalorn and Glannath on high being the watchful eagle eyes for the group. Unfortunately both of the eagles see that the site of the ferry that is supposed to shuttle people from the Emerald Kingdom to Izen (and back) has obviously been attacked recently--some wisps of smoldering smoke still rise from the burned-out shell of the ferryman's house on the Emerald Kingdom side of the river.
(OOC: Rolled spot checks for Glannath and Athalorn...only a natural 1 would have kept them from spotting the battle site from the air. Now you need to indicate how--or IF--either of these two will communicate what they have Spotted to the others in the party.)
Figment d20=19 Tuesday November 16th, 2004 7:02:09 AM
The mage replentishes his spells and changes some spells to support a stint in Izen. As they approach the river he decides to have a look around himself. "I think a flight up top might be good. Sounds like we now how up to FOUR other groups - unless this is Mop's group. Be sure to ask the ferryman if a sniveling whiner was among the attackers - if he still lives... There's the elves, the HOL, Mop and crew, and possibly another group of dragon men. How do we know we are still on the right track? I'll be back in a bit...". The mage casts his spell and flies up with the eagle. He follows what should be the trail into Izen about a quarter mile up for as long as he can safely fly with his spell and still get back. If he spots anything he casts Invisibility on himself to keep from being spotted.
DM OOC: oops, forgot about Figment's attempt to deduce about this new development--a few moments' worth of cogitation {Intelligence check roll result=19} will give the wizard the insight that this group of slavers were heading northwest into the Kingdom with their newest "recruits"--thus a different group than the one the Talons had encountered. And Figment doubtless retains the fact that some of the dragon-fellas went back to the Kingdom while most of them went towards Izen.)
Gunther Tuesday November 16th, 2004 9:01:01 AM
Gunther happily takes up a seat on the wooden bench, wanting to be up front should any hanky panky take place. As he travels, he tries to strike up a conversation with Olana. "Dis is my first trip into Izen. Tell me vhat is it like. De Scaab vas pretty rugged, I assume dis vill be too." As he chats with the elven ranger, Gunther plays with a new ring on his right hand, rubbing its smooth surface between his rough caloused fingers.
Athalorn d20=16 d20+19=25 d20+19=21 Tuesday November 16th, 2004 1:05:32 PM
The druid feels nothing unusal about the forest (sense motive 16) save for its renewed vigour.
Seeing the smoke from the ferry, Athalon begins flying in circles above the party, screeching in his eagle tongue to warn of danger or trouble ahead. When they are alerted, and Figment begins flying, the druid asks Glannath to come with him, and they fly on ahead, scouting the area for signs of life (Spot = 25, listen = 21)
Lian Tuesday November 16th, 2004 3:47:26 PM
Lian rides along, watching the group closely, not sure what to think of the party's reaction to Figment's actions. He rides Merlot, even when given the opportunity to give his friend a rest, and ride in the wagon.
Brother Bertram [Sub Jay B] Tuesday November 16th, 2004 3:49:27 PM
(OOC: When is Mark due to return?)
Bertram opts to ride in the wagon. His short, but stout legs will eventually need the rest. He helps out with food and water through the trip.(Donna, would you like a spell list from me for Bert?)
Falin Tuesday November 16th, 2004 6:21:55 PM
Not feeling comfortable with a group sitting in one spot Falin decides to travel to the side of the group. "Maybe we should keep someone about a quarter to a half mile in front of us to check for ambushes. We are going to be pretty much a sitting duck with a wagon."
Ingrge Tuesday November 16th, 2004 9:48:23 PM
Settling down of Moon Shadow, Ingrge rides along quietly as if lost in thought.
Milo Tuesday November 16th, 2004 11:56:55 PM
Milo seems ever alert as they proceed along their path. He volunteers to take the point position as Falin suggests, staying a good hundred yards ahead of the group on foot, though hidden and watchful.
Olana d20=2 d20+12=27 Wednesday November 17th, 2004 1:11:22 AM
Driving the horses attached to the cart, Olana doesn't catch the subtleties that the forest might normally tell her.
((Handle animals DC 27))
"Not had too mant forays into Izen," she says in reply to Gunther's question, "but its rough country, and we'll probably come across the occasional band of orcs. There's a mountain at the heart of the land - a bad place. I hope we don't end up going there!"
Lian and Brother Bertram Wednesday November 17th, 2004 6:49:43 AM
Lain and Bertram talk as they travel, discussing Domi and his teachings. Lian seems very interested in the stories and legends surrounding the God. His friends, history on the Wold and the fight with Marteus.
"Bertram, I should show you my book I purchased when we return to the Tower. It's about Domi and his life."
The dwarf continues, answering the elf to the best of his knowledge.
Occassionally he'll ask Milo, the Justicar of Pantheon, about his God's ways and his life here in the Wold. Did he know Domi? What was/is he like? Etc...
(OOC; Sorry about the multi character post. I have a bizarre shift at the store for the next two nights. Don't know when I'll find time to post.)
Discoveries -- DM Donna d20=18 Wednesday November 17th, 2004 10:17:00 AM
K'Nara's ears pick up Athalorn's warning, and she also notes Figment's flight ahead.
"Let's hurry--Athalorn's giving an alarm..." she orders the others and spurs her horse forward.
Figment, along with Athalorn and Glannath, are the first on the scene: the Talons arrive at the river only to find that the ferry that was supposed to be there is tied up on the other side...and that the ferry man and his family and home have been killed and burned to the ground.
Figment finds HOL symbols carved into what remains of the front door and the chest of the ferryman's son, an elven-blooded lad who looked to be a young adolescent.
"We have to give this family a decent burial," K'Nara says grimly, "We also have to figure out a way to get the ferry back over here to this side of the river, since the Lygn's too swollen for us to get this cart across safely..."
Athalorn Wednesday November 17th, 2004 11:04:59 AM
The druid is saddened once more by the sight of the death and destruction in the area. All they seemed to encounter these days was chaos and the dying. Be they animal or plant. this was not what the druid had expected when he followed his Hierophants orders so long ago...
Flying in circles for some time, he then soars over the great river to the ferry, hoping Figment (if still airborne) will accompany him that they may try and rescue the ferry.
Gunther d20+12=16 Wednesday November 17th, 2004 2:29:47 PM
The warrior hops off the cart and quickly examines the river water. Then he returns to K'nara. "You know, ve're lucky dey didn't just destroy de ferry. I could try and svim to de oder side and bring back de ferry. He looks up and spots Athalorn in eagle form on the other side of the river. "Or maybe Athalorn vill get it for us."
If K'nara decides that it's a good idea for him to swim for the ferry, Gunther rids himself of his armor and wades into the water, doing a marginal job of swimming (Swim=16).
If not, then Gunther sets himself about the grisly job of digging graves for the ferryman's family.
Figment Wednesday November 17th, 2004 7:19:57 PM
The mage curtails his plans to fly fast and far as they come up on the scene. As they discover what the HOL lackey's have done yet again, he just just shakes his head and confirms for himslef yet again that his decision to execute the eviol HOL member was the right choice. "At least there's one less of those bastards now. Maybe it saved one life... We have to catch them.". He nods at Antalorn's signal and goes with him to see if they can move the ferry back across without too much trouble. Once they get the thing back across - assuming they do - the mage recasts fly on himself and makes a line in the direction of the HOL, knowing that he should easily be able to catch them and see how far ahead they are. He flies invisibly as he gets close to where he thinks they should be.
Milo Wednesday November 17th, 2004 7:59:41 PM
Milo looks askance at Lian, "Pantheon does not find me worthy to serve as his Justicar, but perhaps one day I will be allowed to serve him in another manner."
At the grisly scene of death, Milo goes into the home looking for a shovel and begins the task of burying the dead. His grim countenance speaks volumes about how he feels regarding the incident.
Olana d20+12=17 Wednesday November 17th, 2004 11:40:12 PM
After tying the horses a short distance away from the smell of the dead, Olana pitches in and helps out where she can.
If the guys need some rope to tow the ferry back, she'll comandeer enough rope from everyone to make the stretch and tie it together. ((Rope use DC 17))
If its not needed - she'll start digging, matching the rythym of her shovel to a softly sung elven lament.
Glannath Wednesday November 17th, 2004 11:41:18 PM
Glannath hovers above the ferry, wings beating.
Falin Thursday November 18th, 2004 12:25:28 AM
With several of the group already working on the burial of the dead. Falin does what he can to help get the ferry back accross the river. "If they knew they were being followed why wopuld they have left the ferry?", Falin says outloud. "I would have cut its mooring or I would have destroyed it to prevent any crossing from my persuers. This means one of two things. They don't consider us a risk or they meant for us to find this and to try to get the ferry back."
Lian Thursday November 18th, 2004 2:45:21 AM
The monk nods in understanding at Milo.
The grim scene is upsetting to the monk, but all emotion is quenched when Gunther mentions the ferry is fine. Lian looks at Olana. "Well, at least I won't have to Ferryman." He says, with a tiny smirk and wink.

Moving On (Again)- DM Donna d20+2=16 d20+2=22 d20=15 Thursday November 18th, 2004 6:42:14 AM
When Figment comes in for a landing, K'Nara holds her hand up.
"Fly over to the other side with Athalorn and bring the ferry over to this side before you relinquish your flying spell." she says.
(Assuming that Figment and Athalorn both go to the ferry and work together in human form to pull it back to the Kingdom side of the river, the pair will have the vessel moored for use by the rest of the party by the time the others have given the slain ferryman's family a proper burial...the burial doesn't take too long as there wasn't much left of the people.)
K'Nara sings along with Olana, giving the opposite side of the river a hard look once in a while. She also warns Figment NOT to take flight until (at least) the rest of the party has pulled itself on the ferry to the Izen side of the river.
"Remember what happened the last time you tried to go it alone--" the woman warrior reminds him, "--you nearly had the life squeezed out of you by that...that...thing." K'Nara actually shudders in horror in remembrance of what Figment's invisible would-be assassin looked like.
The deceased family is buried and the party is able to use the ferry to get themselves across. K'Nara frowns thoughtfully.
"I think this is the end of the journey for your cat, Gunther," she points out as they cross, "This river is running rather quickly and I don't think--" Suddenly, something in the water catches K'Nara's eye and she gasps, then--amazingly--begins to laugh as she points into the water.
Swimming furiously in an effort to catch up to the ferry is a very unhappy black panther. (OOC: rolled a 16 so that the kitty barely makes a Swim check.)
K'Nara has the party stop briefly and allow the cat to catch up to--and then climb onto--the barge (OOC: rolled a natural 20 for the kitty to climb onto the barge). The large feline hisses and spits and violently shakes as much of the water off of herself as she can before growling at Gunther and slinking underneath the shelter of the cart.
The horses get understandably nervous, however--it takes Olana's skills as a ranger to get them to remain calm. (OOC: rolled a 15 for the Animal Handling check--since this is the minimum number needed to keep the horses calm, I didn't add any bonuses Olana has...she's successful in keeping the horses from bolting off the boat.)
"Hail the mighty Master of Beasts!" K'Nara says, laughing because both she AND Gunther are dripping with water from the feline's shaking. "What kind of charm is it that you possess, Gunther, that makes a big cat swim to join you?"
(OOC: I'll be posting another transitional passage later today--before Figment flies off, there are more clues to discover on the Izen side of the ferry site.)
Figment Thursday November 18th, 2004 7:03:19 AM
The mage makes sure all are across safely, the "clues" are reviewed, and that he has a clear idea of the direction of travel of their adversaries before flying off. He asks Olana "Any idea how long ago they were here? Thought you might be able to tell.".
Athalorn Thursday November 18th, 2004 12:26:33 PM
Back in human form, the druid decides to remain with the others - to save his powers for a time. He rides the ferry, and smiles with genuine warmth as the panther joins them. He claps Gunther on the shoulder. "My good friend, seems you made an impression on her. I am glad - she likes you I can tell - and rightly so. you will make a fine friend for her."
Milo Thursday November 18th, 2004 8:24:54 PM
Milo appreciates Olana's song as they work, but remains silent. Once they've boarded the ferry, the halfling turns to Olana and speaks to her in perfect elven, "I'd like to hear more elves songs, happy and sad, when you would teach me." Milo smiles.
Olana d20+14=28 d20+16=35 Friday November 19th, 2004 1:10:52 AM
After the burial, Olana reaches for Milo, wanting a big, tight hug. Her hands are shaking; she feels saturated with soil, the dead, and horse saliva, along with all the ghosts and dogged exhaustion that came with it.
On the ferry, she nods at his request, her face like a ghost.
Having brought the horses onto solid ground, she'll set about having a look around for tracks and anything else of interest. Their mage was obviously eager to be off, and so she takes pains to ensure she spots all that needs to be spotted so he has the right info. "Don't dash off and get yourself killed, Figment," she says. "We've had enough of that today."
((Survival DC 28, Spot DC 35))
Lian Friday November 19th, 2004 2:39:23 AM
"Seems the kitty likes you Gunther." Smiles the monk.
Brother Bertram [Sub Jay B] Friday November 19th, 2004 2:40:54 AM
The cleric checks the panther for hypothermia and damage from river debris. "She seems fine. A bit twitchy, but fine."
Gunther d20+12=13 Friday November 19th, 2004 5:02:14 AM
Gunther nods his head gravely as K'nara issues her statement about seeing the last of the kitty. "Yes, de kitties do not like de va..." Gunther's job drops as the panther swims across the river and climbs into the boat. He smiles shyly at the praise recieved by K'nara, Athatlorn, and Lian. Turning to K'nara, he meerly shrugs his water soaked shoulders. "You know vomen...de do vat dey vant to do." His smile genuinly warm at Athalorn's words, Gunther looks his friend in the eye. "I hope I am half de friend to her as she has already be to me. You know...von day ven ve get some "down time" I vould like you to speak vith her. I vould like to find out her name, or give her von if she does not already have von."
As the panther settles in, Gunther moves over toward her. Reaching down low, he goes to give the kitty a pet (Handle animal=13...sheesh) only to get his hand swatted once more. Blood trickles down from the new wounds on his hand as he heads back toward K'nara and the others. "Master of de Beasts..." he chuckles. "I tink not...more like Mastered by de Beast." His eyebrows arch as Brother Bertram goes over to check on the panther, wondering what kind of reception the stout cleric might recieve.
Falin Friday November 19th, 2004 6:20:14 AM
"Is the wagon going to noticably slow us down?", askes Falin. "With everyone after this lantern I don't want to be the last one to the party, so to speak."
"Although," he says with a smile," maybe we show up last and theyt have all killed each other and we get this thing and leave."
"Does anyone know, do any of the pursuers, including us, know how to use this thing?"
On the Izen Side of the Lygn -- DM Donna d20=14 Friday November 19th, 2004 7:53:01 AM
(OOC: this post is kind of long because the transition part wasn't posted yesterday.)
Brother Bertram only barely misses getting swatted by the wet panther himself when he checks her condition. The she-cat, it seems, definitely doesn't like being wet.
"We don't have much of a choice, Falin," K'Nara addresses the archer's issues, "This forest will soon turn into scrub and from there it goes into barren wasteland with NO vegetation and rather rock terrain--and NO water to be found unless you dig deep for it or carry it with you. We need the wagon to help Bertram from using any potential healing magic on conjuring water and such."
When the Talons land, the panther immediately melts into the forest.
Olana's tracking abilities turn up something rather odd: the tracks that lead from the ferry site into Izen include human and horse prints, as well as the distintive clawed feet of the dragon-guys as well--but there are a set of three prints that lead from Izen, stop at the periphery of the site...and then back to Izen again.
Olana's skill tells her that:
1) The three beings were all human (or of the medium-sized human races). 2) The three people were either dressed for speed or they were magically-enhanced to be as light as possible. 3) These particular prints were made within the last 24 hours.
Olana can also tell that the traffic from the site follows a trail that leads east from the ferry. Though the road is not a well-used one, Figment can follow the trail rather easily from the sky, and the Talons can keep up with him on the trail.
Following the trail for about an hour or two, however, leads everyone to another scene of violence: they find the remains of some sort of battle.
On either side of the road, there are two dead HOL members, a human in Parnoth's livery, a young elf Tine member (you kind of recall his face from when Endrin drummed you all out of the Tines), and the blasted remains of one of those dragon-fellas...all lying on the ground, very dead. Set in place, on the chest of each of the dead is one of those strange black feathers.
(Olana can tell that each "category" of body seems to have been killed at a separate time and left here. As far as she can tell the Tine's body is the oldest, followed by Parnoth's men, and then the HOL members. The most recent seems to have died no more than a day ago.
A quick search shows that several people who had been here (a.k.a. present during battle) headed off in a northeastern direction, along the road, toward the Badlands.
K'Nara breaks the silence, speaking to nobody in particular:
"Did I ever tell you how much I just hate crossing the Badlands..?"
Milo Friday November 19th, 2004 9:16:55 PM
Milo is practically tripping over himself after Olana's hug. While he is saddened by all that has passed, that pain seems to dim somewhat in the embrace. He then sets himself to business, and shadows Olana as she works out the tracking. He keeps his eyes and ears open for trouble as he watches her back. At K'nara's remark, Milo chirps in, "I don't suppose there is a place in the Wold called the Goodlands. I'd like to visit there sometime." The halfling smiles at his own attempt to lighten the mood.
Athalorn Saturday November 20th, 2004 4:14:06 AM
On the ferry, Athalorn tells Gunther that he'd be more than happy to speak with the Panther when they got chance - perhaps if the panther was to rest near a camp site of theirs...
As they travel, he continues conversing with Gunther, opting to walk with the others rather than fly for a change, and safe in the knowledge that Glannaths eyes and ears are watching overhead.
Happening upon the latest battle scene, the druid speaks to K'Nara. "Tell me of the badlands, K'Nara. I have heard nought but whispered rumour and exaggerated tale."
Figment d20+23=29 Saturday November 20th, 2004 9:00:58 AM
The mage sees what he can see and rejoins the party. He stops long enough to search the bodies of the Talon's enemies for items of interest. He also takes note of the presence of a Tine and tries to remember the black feather as he's seen them before (DC 29).
Troubled by their rate of movement he talks to the others after rejoining. "How is it possible that the dark elven woman has continued to outstrip us by days? How can the HOL be ahead of us already by 24 hours? Maybe 1 or 2 hours... but 24? How?". He looks to Olana for an answer. "Is it possible we could rely on Bertram for water and food and lose the wagon? Can you make enough, Bertram? It would double our progress. And Ingrge, maybe we should confer and figure out a way to scry these folks and perhaps teleport to them or to where they are going? And Milo, did the dark elf say anything that suggested a specific destination? Like a city, canyon, anything? Another thought I have is that I can memorize enough Fly spells with some help from Ingrge and Antalorn and we can fly to intercept the elven woman. This should not take us but a few hours to close the gap. We could close on them and attack from the air giving us a significant advantage.".
Falin Saturday November 20th, 2004 10:07:01 AM
"You won't have to worry about me," he says with a slight smile,"I no longer have the need for food and water."
Gunther Saturday November 20th, 2004 10:05:10 PM
The warrior is thrilled to have the company of the druid, chatting incessantly with him about the panther. "I have thought of a few names for her...but I vant to see if she has a name she vould like..." The warrior drones on and on...telling the druid about his hopes and plans for the feline. Gunther grows quiet as they come upon the scene of the battle. "Dis is very strange...dey have clearly died at different times...vhy vould somevon bring de bodies back here...vhy not leave dem vhere dey fell...and dese feathers...it's live somevon vanted us to see dem...like somevon vas showing off..."
Northeastern, Ho, the Wagon! -- DM Donna d20=20 Monday November 22nd, 2004 6:53:27 AM
K'Nara finds herself chuckling at Milo's observation about "Goodlands" versus "Badlands."
"So would I, Milo--so would I!" she agrees, then answers Athalorn's question:
"The Badlands live up to their name--a rocky waste that harbors little save pock-riddled rocks. It's like a desert--only the ground is too hard for things to burrow into." the tall female fighter frowns as she recalls her last trek across the blighted landscape. "There is less life in the Badlands than there is in a desert."
Figment definitely recalls that the black feathers are the same type left at the scene of Milo's kidnapping--as does K'Nara (OOC: Intelligence check is a natural 20! Woot!)
Then K'Nara turns a puzzled glance Figment's way.
"I was thinking the same thing, Figment," K'Nara says, "And the only possible answer is that the Tines, Parnoth and the HOL have been using magic to not only speed themselves on their pursuit, but also to track this artifact. That, and Elese may have a base of operations that had previously been established in Izen--hence the probability that her gang was here to greet any trespassers and leave their, ah, calling cards..." K'Nara twirls a black feather between her thumb and forefinger, frowning.
Figment's flight ahead revealed to him only that the greenery here begins to thin out--but he had to turn back to make his report to the party before he could be certain of where and when the forest ends and the Badlands begin. So far he hasn't been able to spot Elese and her gang.
"I think we should keep the wagon--at least for now." K'Nara says firmly. "If we get any proof that having it is slowing us up way too much, then we can always leave it by the trail and try the rest of the trek using Brother Bertram's magicks. But for now--let's get going...we need to try to close in on those thieves as fast as possible."
Figment Monday November 22nd, 2004 7:13:38 AM
The mage looks to Ingrge. "I can Shadow walk us abou 50 miles an hour but can't guarantee we will not overshoot them. If you can scry them with one of these feathers - a spell I don't have in arsenal - then we can teleport directly to them and engage."
Olana Monday November 22nd, 2004 11:34:01 AM
"I suspect all the fighting we've had to do has slowed us down, too, along with the digging, and clearing up of our enemy's mess," adds Olana with a sigh, along with letting the others know everything she's discovered. "Bodies take time to be buried. I wonder, though. These black feathers. A badlands group? Those we pursue were obviously met."
The elf tries to make sure the horses are kept well fed and watered, so they're up to what looked to be a hazardous journey ahead.
Glannath Monday November 22nd, 2004 11:40:29 AM
The eagle makes sure he's had a few good kills before entering the southern lands. He's a little puzzled as to why Athalorn would want to come here. The place seemed barren, and hardly anything moved. That meant a lack of life and therefore food. Eh. Unlike the human he never puzzled over things for too long. Catching an updraft that took him up another hundred feet, he cast his beady eyes over the territory below.
Athalorn Monday November 22nd, 2004 12:41:16 PM
The druid continues the journey in discussion with Gunther. He looks up and sees Glannath drifting high into the empty sky on a current. He smiles to himself - Glannath was a loyal companion indeed to fly out here over the barren wastes, for there was likely a lack of food for the great Golden Eagle.
Falin Monday November 22nd, 2004 5:51:51 PM
"I seem to remember an evil group that followed a raven. I don't remember much more than that though."
(OCC: I can't remember what group(local or online) I have dealt with them before so if this group in the past has never delt with them then ignore my post)
Ingrge Monday November 22nd, 2004 5:58:29 PM
Pausing as the puzzle pieces are spread out in front of them, Ingrge thinks for a moment. It could be that there are several groups of each force on the move and perhaps these are some of those other groups and not the ones we have come across.
At Figments suggestion he nods. I could most certainly scy for them using the feather so long as they were actually holding the feather in their posesion for a length of time. But to do so I would need to have some time to set up and cast the spells. If you all wish to spend a little time that way, depending on what we learn we might actually shorten our trip. then again we might learn little of use.
Figment Monday November 22nd, 2004 10:09:04 PM
The mage makes sure and tell everyone the origin of the feathers (if they don't know). "Perhaps we can do it when we stop for the day? That way no time is wasted.".
Gunther Monday November 22nd, 2004 10:56:58 PM
Gunther notices Athalorn's skyward glaze and guesses the druid's thoughts. "It is a desolate place ve are going to. It vill be hard for your friend and mine... But, I've been tinking." Gunther fingers a shiny new ring on his finger. "Dis toy is very helpful...I don't need to eat or drink anymore. So, I vas tinking dat ve could take my share of de food and vater and give it to our friends ven de time comes..."
Lian Monday November 22nd, 2004 11:43:46 PM
The others are far more knowledgable about these things than the monk. He lets them talk it out and simply listens.

What to Do? -- DM Donna Tuesday November 23rd, 2004 6:15:17 AM
K'Nara frowns as she thinks...which is for a long time, as thinking isn't exactly her area of expertise. Then she speaks:
"We will keep the wagon for now--we can always abandon it later if we must. We'll continue to follow this trail until we have to camp...but then Ingrge can use the camp time to set up his Scry spell." She grins at the weapons mage. "Looks like you get to luck out of pulling a watch this time around--I'd like for you to devote yourself to the scrying and then to resting."
Figment--in all his contemplations--needs to make a Spot check versus DC20. If he makes this check, I will email the player what it is that the high-flying mage recalls spotting in his last air recon. (Sorry, I only just now realized that I should have had him do this during his last flight.)
Figment d20+2=9 d20+23=35 Tuesday November 23rd, 2004 7:17:17 AM
Mulling over his recent day, the mage continues to look for clues (Failed Spot). "Milo, did the dark elf take anything from you? Does she have anything that belongs to you? Do any of you who traveled with her recall giving her anything you owned? She may be srying us too...". The mage calms his mind a moment and tries to sense for somone scrying (Arcana/Spellcraft DC 35).
Around the fire before bed he offers "I can get us down the road 50 miles in each hour for several hours. We can cover tremendous amounts of ground. It is not an exact art. We could overshoot them. If Ingrge can find them then a teleport is our best chance for a most accurate transport - though it has risks. I doubt we will catch them doing what we're doing. I would also suggest we wear our scarves (given by the Tines) to prevent them scrying us. I get the feeling we're being watched but I don't know for sure...". (Figment has his on and has since they left).
Athalorn Tuesday November 23rd, 2004 8:39:19 AM
The druid thanks Gunther for his offer. "If the animals start getting hungry we will help them with your food, but I fear they may prefer the hunt," he says, almost laughing.
Athalorn seems cold with Figment, still angry at his previous actions, and more or less ignores his words, allowing the party to decide what to do. However, he is sure that the panther and Glannath would not be teleported...
Olana d20+11=29 Tuesday November 23rd, 2004 1:02:17 PM
((Handle Animal DC 29))
Olana does her best to keep the horses pulling the cart, moving at a decent rate. "I think we need to sing dwarven drinking songs, traveling at this speed," she says to Milo as the cart jolts along.
Brother Bertram [still subbing Jay B] Tuesday November 23rd, 2004 8:27:59 PM
Spell List: Orisons: Create Water x3, Purify Food and Drink x2, Detect Poison First Level: Endure Elements x2, Detect Evil x2, Protection From Evil, Detect Undead, Magic Weapon (War Domain) Second Level: Aid, Augury, Delay Poison, Cure Moderate, Bull's Strength, Spiritual Weapon (War Domain) Third Level: Create Food and Water x2, Dispel Magic, Magic Vestiment (War Domain) Fourth Level: Neutralize Poison, Prayer, Cure Critical Wounds, Divine Power (War Domain) Fifth Level: Raise Dead, Righteous Might, Flame Strike(War Domain)
Bert looks at Olana and smiles. "What songs would you like me to teach you?"
Lian Tuesday November 23rd, 2004 8:31:10 PM
"Gunther, this might give us some time to go over some elven lessons. What do you think?" Asks the enthusiastic monk.
"K'nara, would be best to leave our riding horse here? Or take them with us? Merlot is getting tired and will likely not survive the trip, even with Bertrams help." He looks at his horse sadly.
Milo Tuesday November 23rd, 2004 8:41:14 PM
Milo seems to be in his own little world for the moment, but then suddenly, he snaps out of it, smiling, "Right, dwarven drin..." The halfling's eyes glaze over, and there is an audible pop, as if a cork has been released from a bottle of fine wine. Milo loses his equilibrium, and slumps down in the seat on the cart next to Olana. His eyes snap open, and he takes a deep breath, as if coming up for air after being under water for a long time, "I remember... I know where they're going!" The halfling jumps up into a standing position on the seat, "I don't know why I couldn't remember this before, but I remember while I was a bit dazed during my capture, that Elese mentioned Blackshadow Hall. She wanted to reach the shelter of Blackshadow Hall! Where in the Wold is Blackshadow Hall?!"
Falin Tuesday November 23rd, 2004 9:32:36 PM
"Blackshadow Hall? Sounds quaint. I think we should travel as fast as possible to prevent them from getting there. Or...,"Falin says with a grin," I am tired of being ambushed. I would love to set up and ambush on someone else for a change. What if we were able to get past them and lie in wait?"
Gunther Wednesday November 24th, 2004 12:50:09 AM
Gunther sighs deeply at Lian's offer at Elven lessons. He supposes he should take the monk up on the offer as it seemed that almost everone in the party spoke Elven... Still, he wasn't exactly thrilled about all the hard work that he was sure would be involved...all those verbs and tenses and gerunds... With a slight tingling beginning to work its way into his temples, Gunther gives Lian a half smile. "Vhy...I vould love to..."
Brother Bertram [sub Jay B](Mark returns Monday) Wednesday November 24th, 2004 4:45:50 AM
The dwarf rides along, singing a drinking song. Odd without ale, but alcohal will dehydrate, so water will do. He teaches Olana a rather mellow drinking song, no cursing and the like; she is, after all, a lady.
Lian Wednesday November 24th, 2004 4:53:03 AM
'Blackshadow Hall...' catches the monks ear. "Sounds like a great place... if you like being pinned up and tortured. Hey, its a Hall, I bet it has more of those talking tapestries I'm so fond of." He smiles, hoping the joke wasn't too terrible.
Turning back to Gunther. "I promise, I will go easy on you. Let us start out basic. Pronouncing the characters and numbers. We'll write them later... Then the nouns and we'll go from there. Before you know it, you'll be cursing and chatting with the best elven bards in the Wold." The elf removes the scarf from his mouth so that he can show the large warrior how to hold his mouth when saying certain things. "Let's begin..."
Olana Wednesday November 24th, 2004 1:46:27 PM
"I think we should stay tog - oh!" Olana stops mid sentence as Milo slumps, then blinks astonished as he leaps awake again.
"Blackshadow Hall. It sounds horrible. But it can't be any worse than where we've been before," she adds stoically. "But where is it?"
Setting Up Camp -- DM Donna Thursday November 25th, 2004 8:24:38 AM
The Talons hit the road and follow the trail until it is time to make camp. K'Nara directs that a place for Ingrge to scry be set up immediately and then the rest of the camp be prepared. Then she inspects Merlot.
"I wish you'd spoken up on the Kingdom side of the river, Lian," K'Nara says with a contemplative frown, "That way we could have loosed your horse to the relative peace of the Culverwood...though the forest extends a little ways into Izen, the Kingdom side of the woods would be a LOT more conducive to Merlot living out a goodly portion of his remaining time without being in immediate danger of becoming a meal for wandering orcs, ogres and whatever else roams the Badlands." The tall auburn-haired woman runs her hands over the loyal mounts aging flanks, sighing. "Though I fear you're likely correct, I'd rather see Merlot expire in our presence than set him loose to get picked off by some Izen threat...but this is ultimately up to you, Lian, as Merlot is your responsibility."
K'Nara then speaks with Figment:
"We'll give Ingrge the chance to see if he can scry anything from the feathers. Should we come up with a location, we can then decide how to proceed."
Then, once more, the human bladesinger goes to Milo, concern on her face.
"You're okay?" she asks. "I had thought you were not quite yourself at the Elven Council celebration...I should have realized that you had been ensorceled when you spoke of an early retirement. I hope we catch up to this...Elese person. I have much to make her answer for, it seems..."
Ingrge Thursday November 25th, 2004 9:24:26 AM
Getting to the camp, Ingrge finds a suitable quiet space and from his haversack removes his 2 foot by 4 foot curved, scrying mirror and after draping a familiar scarf over his head, he prepares for his work. After about an hour or so Ingrge is set up and ready to start his work.
"Ok guys, what is it you want me to try and scry for. Do you just want me to use the feather and get whatever general impressions there are. Or do you want I should use the first feather left by Elese to scry for her in particular?"
Athalorn Thursday November 25th, 2004 10:06:52 AM
The druid remains quietly contemplative, camping slightly away from the party. In the evening he goes hunting with Glannath from the skies, looking for any morsel of food the eagles can find.
DM Donna Thursday November 25th, 2004 1:08:44 PM
Since Athalorn is patroling the skies and searching for game, kindly roll a Spot check versus DC20...I will email the player what he Spots if he makes the roll.
By the way, as the Talons are still in wooded area, there is game in the immediate vicinity.
Milo Friday November 26th, 2004 12:03:01 AM
Unsure of the outcome of Ingrge's spell, one way or the other, Milo remains quiet, hoping that those more knowledgeable with regards to magic will make the right decision.
DM Donna Friday November 26th, 2004 6:29:17 AM
...don't forget, Ingrge has asked about which feathers to use for his Scry spell--the ones found in the Tines HQ, or the ones on the bodies. Talon members should voice their opinions on this.
Athalorn d20+19=36 Friday November 26th, 2004 9:00:33 AM
(Spot = 36)
Gunther Friday November 26th, 2004 4:33:41 PM
The monk drones on and on with the elven lessons...the same words over and over. By Warrd, he just can't pay attention. Finally, he raises a hand in surrender or defeat or somehting like that... "Ve should take a break..." Going over to Ingrge, Gunther speaks up. "Vell, I'm no expert, but I vould guess it vould be best to use de "freshest" feather. I say you use de von ve found on de bodies."
Lian d20+9=16 Friday November 26th, 2004 5:35:25 PM
The monk stops. "Too much huh? Okay, no problem. We begin again tomorrow." (Sense Motive 16)
Brother Bertram [sub Jay B] Friday November 26th, 2004 5:37:13 PM
The cleric smiles at the large warrior.
Falin Saturday November 27th, 2004 8:43:29 AM
"Yes, I believe we should use the freshest feathers as well." Chimes in Falin agreeing with Gunther.
Ingrge Saturday November 27th, 2004 9:22:04 AM
"Freshness as you call it, has little or nothing to do with this spell. It is who was in possession of it that matters.
The first feather, we are pretty sure was in the possession of Elese, and should show me her surroundings and where she is. The second feather was left by an unknown entity, but obviously in league with Elese. It would show me this person and his or her whereabouts.
While this distinction might not seem like a big deal, in matters of scying it means a whole lot, including the possibility of life and death for the scryer."
Milo Saturday November 27th, 2004 12:03:49 PM
"I say use the 2nd feather then, since it may give us a better idea of what Elese is doing."
Gunther Saturday November 27th, 2004 10:48:32 PM
The warrior shrugs. Magic wasn't something he professed to know a lot about, so he'd take the mage's word on it. "Vell, I suppose ve should look for Elese...I doubt she vould give up dis Star tingy..."
K'Nara Votes -- DM Donna Sunday November 28th, 2004 4:07:59 PM
"I, myself, would like to know where Elese is." the leader of the Talons says grimly. "Whether she's still just ahead of us by a day or two...or if she's gotten to this Blackshadow Hall yet."
Lian Sunday November 28th, 2004 6:49:49 PM
The monk thinks a moment. "I agree with K'Nara."
Scrying Time -- DM Donna Monday November 29th, 2004 6:13:38 AM
After casting her particular vote, K'Nara squints skyward.
"I wonder where Athalorn flew off to..?" she asks aloud.
DM OOC: Ingrge can cast his Scry spell after the player posts which feathers are being used. I will post the spell results as soon as I see Ingrge's choice on the board.
Athalorn Monday November 29th, 2004 8:59:25 AM
Athalorn lands amngst the trees. He is in tears of pain and anger at the suffering of the forest, and in despair he casts plant growth on as large an area as he can. He knows it will not help, but he knows not what else to do. Turning back to human form, he looks around for any signs of life. Are there any animals around with whom the druid could speak? Tears still stream down his face unchecked, and although he knows he ought to return to the camp, he cannot bring himself to leave the tortured land. Perhaps he should go straight to Mohannin...
DM Response: However--rather disturbiningly--the Plant Growth has NO effect whatsoever on the trees and plants, except perhaps to alleviate their pain a bit. How very strange...Athalorn's spell helped, yet it could not get the plants to regenerate into their natural shapes.
What can this mean???
Additional OOC: and another odd thing is that none of the animals in the immediate area (small mammals, birds and reptiles) can explain why the plants are like this, either...assuming that Athalorn uses some magic to communicate with the animals, all they can tell the druid is that the plants have been so very oddly shaped ever since they can remember.
Glannath d20+16=29 Monday November 29th, 2004 5:19:48 PM
((SPOT DC 29))
Glannath continues to wheel above as Athalorn descends. He's keeping a close eye on his companion, however.
Olana Monday November 29th, 2004 5:26:41 PM
Olana is in a quandry over the feathers. On the one hand, the fresh trail of the new feather makes sense to someone in her profession. But then Ingrge said that didn't matter. Oh, but did she really want to see Elese again? Not really, but if she had the artifact....
"Who do we think has the artifact? If she has it, or we think she has, then we scry for her."
Another thought enters her head. "Ingrge, if this is dangerous, how do we protect you? While you're doing this scrying thing?"
Falin Monday November 29th, 2004 5:42:12 PM
"We need to hurry and do whatever we are going to do. If they reach their destination then they are more secure. Any item worth taking is at its most vulnerable during transport. In fact I think those that need alot of sleep should get comfortable in the wagan and we continue on our way." Says Falin with a hint of impatience on his voice.
Ingrge Monday November 29th, 2004 7:01:00 PM
Turning to Oalnna, the older elf replies. "I hope the scarf will protectmy omewhat from eyes trying to seek me as I do this, otherwise I am very vulnerable to physicl attacks while I am thus occupied."
Nodding at the input from the others, Ingrge voices his thoughts on the matter.
"Elese seems to be the common factor in much of this and last that we knew may have had the artifact. It is also possible that she has left this second feather as well, but I will use the original feather to try and see where elese is up to."
Brother Bertram Monday November 29th, 2004 8:03:19 PM
Bertram nods his head in agreement to Ingrge. "She appears to be the key to this whole mess, Friend Ingrge. I will guard you from physical attack as best I can while you are casting." Bertram looks down at his axe doubtfully, "Then I would that you could check my axe and myself to see if we are cursed. Something is wrong that I cannot fathom. I will seek guidance from my gods in this matter as well." Having said his peace, Bertram will pray to Domi and Gargul for any guidance in his strange clumsiness of late, until he is needed to guard Ingrge.
Figment d20+23=38 Monday November 29th, 2004 8:47:07 PM
"I would suggest we use the feather we know she had. It should tell us where she is now. With that information perhaps Ingrge could teleport he and I to the place and I can teleport us back once I get a good look at it. We all can then teleport together once he and I have recovered.". The mage watches Ingrge closely to help if things go awry (Spellcraft 38).
Milo Monday November 29th, 2004 10:41:08 PM
Milo stands by, looking on as Ingrge prepares to perform the scry spell. Quietly the halfling makes his way around the group to where Olana is, and stands beside her at ease.
Lian Monday November 29th, 2004 11:24:12 PM
(OOC: Welcome Back Mark!!)
The monk meditates and hears nothing being said. He will help guard the wizards if asked.
Athalorn Gets A Message -- DM Donna Tuesday November 30th, 2004 7:16:57 AM
Even as the druid ponders why this edge of the Culverwood is so very unnatural, one of the chipmunks nearby suddenly stiffens up with a loud squeak. Turning its little head and fixing Athalorn with a commanding eye, it speaks:
"You see before you the work of Parnoth...he has been twisting the Culverwood to his own ends for hundreds of years. There is naught you can do here without the Serpent Star, for only that artifact can undo what has been done.
Go, now, Athalorn...your friends will have need of you soon..."
There is no doubt in the druid's mind that the presence that spoke through the chipmunk and now leaves the little animal was that of Mohannin.
Mirror, Mirror, in the Bush -- DM Donna d20+9=12 Tuesday November 30th, 2004 7:18:12 AM
The matter is decided: Ingrge will scry using the feathers left at the Tines' HQ in Emerald City. K'Nara orders the others to stand on guard while the weapon mage casts his spell.
The surface of the mirror shimmers--and suddenly you see the familiar face of Elese: she has fair skin, dark hair and dark eyes, but her look is the same as it was when the party first met her in Fae Skeimir.
She is speaking with a fair-haired young elven-blooded male...Milo recognizes him as Lerith. (Lerith is the Tine whom Endrin had accused the Talons of being in cahoots with when the artifact disappeared from the Tines' HQ.) Lerith is looking a bit troubled.
"--power beyond imagination." Elese says with a smug sort of smile. "And then...there is always me..." She emphasizes "me" in a clearly seductive manner. The half-elf with her frowns.
"I...I just don't know, Elese," he replies uncertainly, "I mean--before I was just SO sure that Endrin was wasting my abilities...but now...now this just seems...wrong..."
Even as Lerith speaks, Elese takes a few steps away from him, approaching a very large bush that anyone with the Survival or Nature Knowledge skill immediately recognizes as one that is a type that isn't even supposed to be found in the area of Izen at all. Not only is it an obviously imported plant--but it is most unnaturally shaped to resemble a large sphere with several mini-topiary branches sticking up out of the top.
As Elese gets closer to the trimmed tree, however, the details of the giant, unnatural topiary are lost. She sighs, whispering something and making gestures. All those with the Spellcraft ability making a check versus DC12 will recognize that Elese is casting a Charm Person spell.
The female sweeps her hand towards Lerith, who freezes momentarily in the middle of his remorseful discourse...then seems to get a kind of sappy sort of smile on his face.
"Now, then, dear--you agree that I know best..?" Elese asks the now-bewitched young male.
"Yes, Elese..." Lerith agrees in a tone that reminds one of somebody hopelessly infatuated with someone else.
"Commander!!!" a panicked voice that sounds like it is being accompanied by running feet. "Commander--Bartek says...you're being Scryed!!!"
Elese's face is startled and then turns quite ugly as she practically spits out another spell--obviously the counterspell to the Scry magic now being used...
...the mirror abruptly becomes just a reflective surface again.
"Oops...busted!" K'Nara points out. "That's it--we're going to use a teleport and get ourselves to her location...now!"
Athalorn Tuesday November 30th, 2004 1:12:22 PM
The druid frowns at Mohannin's words, and watches as the chipmunk runs off. Taking once agin to the skies in eagle form, although reluctant to leave the tortured forest, he flies as fast as his strong wings will carry him, determined that they should destroy Parnoth and gain the Serpent Star.
As the companions are getting ready to leave, he speaks quietly to those who will listen - ensuring K'Nara and Olana can hear him. "Parnoth is torturing our great forest." He explains quickly about the twisted trees and the sense of despair, the evil work of the great dragon.
His explanation is curtailed when the scrying spell comes to a conclusion....
Lian Tuesday November 30th, 2004 5:43:00 PM
Lian's eyes pop open when he hears 'her' voice. He stands up and watches the scene play out. "I guess she is among the evil we're fighting." He looks upset. When the scry is broken, "Um, thats not a good thing, is it?" He asks K'Nara.
Milo Tuesday November 30th, 2004 7:46:23 PM
The smile that crosses Milo's face at the mention of a teleport spell is quite feral. The halfling draws his short sword, and grasps Olana's hand, giving it a playful squeeze, "Time to go carve my initials in that hateful witch."
Falin Tuesday November 30th, 2004 9:15:26 PM
Falin pulls out his bow and knocks an arrow. "I guess I need to introduce myself to this "witch"." A smile creeps across Falins face.
Kent Tuesday November 30th, 2004 10:01:35 PM
A headache starting to form from the abrupt cessation of his scrying, Ingrge squeezes his eys shut tightly and gives his a head a brief shake and then looks at Figment closely. "My friend I do not have the ability quite yet to cast teleport though it is one I do have entered into my spell book and hope to be able to cast fairly soon."
Turning to the others he continues. So did any of you actually recognize where Elese is or are we still in the dark about that?
Figment Tuesday November 30th, 2004 10:11:06 PM
"I can take myself and three other people with me at once. I only have one teleport memorized so the only way I can get more of us there is to memorize more teleport spells. I will take 3 of you, come back and get 3 more. I can only do 4 spells in a day so unless someone has a scroll I can only get 7 of us there in a day. Tomorrow Ingrge could cast one and get the rest of us there. Either that or we can get 8 of us there today (if Ingrge can take 3 others).".
Olana Tuesday November 30th, 2004 10:59:28 PM
"Is she in Culverwood?" puzzles the elf, somewhat confused. She grips Milo's hand for a moment, her blue eyes looking right at him. "Be calm and cold, my love. Don't let her draw you right into her web. Its the artifact we want."
As for the tortured trees - "Why Parnoth wants them cut into silly shapes, I don't know," she says with a sigh to Athalorn. "I'm sure passing travelers would find them as unsettling as we do. We must thank the forces of nature they still grow at all."
Glannath Tuesday November 30th, 2004 11:04:13 PM
Glannath follows his companion and sweeps down, landing with a hop skip nearby and folding his mighty wings.
Brother Bertram Wednesday December 1st, 2004 4:24:35 AM
Bertram rises, readying his axe, looking at it doubtfully, but still making sure its edge is keen. With another quick prayer to Domi and Gargul he makes ready for whatever is needed.
Gunther Wednesday December 1st, 2004 7:49:53 AM
Readying his two-bladed sword, Gunther looks over at Falin. "I vill go now if dat is vat ve decide, but it is unvise to split our forces. Dere is safety in numbers... Dough ve need to get dere fast, I vould tink it vould be best if ve all vent togeder."
To Go or Not to Go -- DM Donna d20=19 Wednesday December 1st, 2004 9:59:09 AM
K'Nara frowns thoughtfully, her face scrunching slightly in concentration.
"I had thought that Figment could teleport everyone or he wouldn't have made that offer..." the female fighter says, "...but if he can't get us all there together, then it's best that we don't go. We must stay together if we are to be the most effective. We will just have to wait until Figment has the magic to transport us there."
K'Nara listens carefully to Athalorn's description of the quite unnatural forest, and her brow furrows as something occurs to her (OOC: she makes her Intelligence check with a roll of 19.)
"Perhaps the artifact has the ability to make and unmake those twisted tree-sculptures..?" she ventures, looking to Figment and Ingrge. "But I really wouldn't know why such things are located on the border between the Kingdom and Izen...we don't get too many--if any--tourists up from Izen, since we're hostile to each other as nations."
Athalorn Wednesday December 1st, 2004 11:37:47 AM
The druid agrees with K'Nara and Gunther. "We should certainly stick together. They know they have been scryed and will expect an attack."
Brother Bertram Wednesday December 1st, 2004 4:00:34 PM
Bertram says hesitantly, "I think Friend K'nara is right to some extent about this artifact. I am not sure whether it can repair the mangled trees or not, but what I mean is that I am fairly sure that the item can be used for good or evil. It is just a tool. I do not know this for fact but I am fairly certain." Bertram still seems unsure of himself and his problems in combat of late.
Lian Wednesday December 1st, 2004 4:34:17 PM
"Elese will know us and how we think in combat. She fought with us several times. We will have to change our tactics." He frowns at the fact that she will likely perish in the attack. "We should focus on her when we attack, if possible. I'm sure she still has a few tricks we hadn't seen."
Figment Wednesday December 1st, 2004 9:39:28 PM
"It will be many years before I have the ability to transport us all at once, K'Nara. You don't realize what you are asking. I can, however do it in two trips if Ingrge can take a group too - which he can. We should indeed attempt to stick together - and focus our attacks on Elise. She will be the most powerful - and the one carrying the artifact.".
Falin Wednesday December 1st, 2004 10:21:27 PM
"I think we should risk it and jump. We are talking about a possible way to fix all of this sickness in the Culverwood. An artifact that could have the power to destroy Parnoth. My mother used to tell me 'Do what you can with the time you are given with what you have where you are.' We have a chance at doing something that no one else has ever been able to do and it starts with this first step. I say we go in two waves. I will go with the first if that is our choice." Falin looks over the group to guage the effectiveness of his words.
Gunther Wednesday December 1st, 2004 11:40:53 PM
Gunther listens to the exchange between the mages and K'nara with interest, but little comprehension. "Figment, did you mean dat ve can make two trips in von day and get dere togeder? Or tow trips in two days? If ve can get dere in von day den I tink ve should do it. Try and catch dem before dey have much time to prepare for us."
Olana Thursday December 2nd, 2004 12:54:32 AM
"Alright, but what about our stuff, our animals and our familiars? Can we spell out just who can make the jump, using both Figment's and Ingrge's spells?"
Lian (illegal second post) Thursday December 2nd, 2004 12:57:11 AM
"Something just came to me. If we scried on them, won't they consider doing to same for us? If I was on Elise's side, I would be suggesting that right now." He raises an eyebrow. "Call me paranoid, but I think we are being watched... but not by Elese and her crew... by one of the others. Come on, think about it. We're the most danger to these three groups and if I was leading a band of well trained thugs, I would suggest waiting and watching. Then when our target made a mistake, that is when I would strike, hard, fast and decisive." Lian then realizes what he's said is idiotic and steps out of the conversation. He looks at his feet and and raises the scarf over his nose and mouth. "I don't know.... just seems..." He trails off.
Understanding -- DM Donna Thursday December 2nd, 2004 7:16:51 AM
At Figment's words, K'Nara nods.
"Ahhh...I misunderstood, then," she replies, "I thought you'd meant that you couldn't do the entire group today. Well, since both you and Ingrge can get us all there in a relatively short amount of time, then we should go, NOW--while Elese is trying to figure out her response to being Scry-ed." K'Nara addresses Lian's concerns as well some others that have been voiced:
"The nature of the Scry spell--so I've been told--is that one must have an item that was in the possession of one's subject. Hopefully she won't have anything that belongs to Milo..." the leader of the Talon says with a bit of a grimace. "As for the Teleport, I've been given to understand that a person can be teleported with enough stuff on them so long as it's stuff they're strong enough to carry--which means that Athalorn and Glannath count as one teleport subject so long as Glannath is being borne by Athalorn (on his forearm or shoulder). Gunther's cat, however, is big enough to be considered a separate 'person' in this spell." Once more K'Nara turns to Figment and Ingrge.
"How many can each of you take on one trip?" she asks. "And...should we survive this...can we teleport back to this place? I'm inclined to leave the camp as is, with the horses here...but only if we can return. If we can't come back, I'd rather set them all free so that they may forage and survive on their own."
Figment Thursday December 2nd, 2004 7:53:36 AM
The mage patiently continues to explain. "I can make two trips but that has to be tomorrow. Today I can do one. If we go now we can get back here tomorrow too. If Ingrge can take 4 including himself then today we can get 8 of us there. And Lian, your observation about us being scyed is why I suggested everyone begin wearing their handkerchiefs the other day. I decided you guys didn't care if we were scryed or not...". "On her location, I got a good look at it and Ingrge did too. There is a risk of failure but I expect we will be OK. We could end up in two places if one of succeed and one of us fails. But I feel the risk is small enough to justify the attempt.". The mage looks to Ingrge to tell the group what he can do to help.
Ingrge Thursday December 2nd, 2004 4:56:41 PM
Shaking his head as if to clear it Ingrge steps in. No Figment, K'nara. I am afraid that I am not able to yet cast the spell. At least not from memorization. If the spell were on a scroll, I would have a chance to cast it, but it could still go wrong. (Ingrge can't cast 5th level spells yet.)
Lian Thursday December 2nd, 2004 6:18:29 PM
Looking at Ingrge, "I think we're scre..." He breaks off. "I think we have to reconsider things then."
"I assume the teleport is depends on weight and not on number of people then?"
Gunther Thursday December 2nd, 2004 11:58:16 PM
The warrior sighs. This conversation wasn't his strong point. He tries to ready himself in case they need to leave right away. He isn't too terribly keen on leaving the panther behind, but then again, he has the awful feeling that they are headed into serious trouble...and he worried about bringer her into that kind of danger...
Olana Friday December 3rd, 2004 12:33:28 AM
"Then we can't all go together, can we. And if we split up, we're considerably weakened. So - we need an alternative. Did the scry give us any information that tells us we're on the right path, at least? I suppose it would be too much to assume we're only half a day's ride thataway, or something."
Athalorn Friday December 3rd, 2004 3:12:06 AM
The druid is tired of Figment's self righteousness, but chooses not to cause a fight now. Instead, ignoring the mage, and somewhat relieved with the thought that they won't be teleporting, he suggests we just continue with the journey. "Let us keep to their heels, move at pace and follow their trail. Glannath and myself could scout ahead from the skies to check we are on the right path."
Brother Bertram Friday December 3rd, 2004 4:28:53 AM
Bertram moves over beside Ingrge and quietly says, "If we do this Friend Ingrge, make sure I am sent with the first wave. I can at least keep Elese away from our mages for a few moments. I need to do something to help."
Falin Friday December 3rd, 2004 6:01:09 AM
"If we don't jump forward then we need to at least send our two fastest to see how far ahead and where they are. If that means our friends in the sky then so be it, but I did not like the sight of that plant in the vision. It made me think, just for a second, that they could have sent the mass of the group we were following ahead of us and then Elese and a few others could have broken off and headed back into culverwood." Touts Fallin as he paces back and forth in front of the fire.
More Strategy -- DM Donna Friday December 3rd, 2004 6:52:39 AM
"Figment--can you write a Teleport scroll..?" K'Nara asks, hearing Ingrge's explanation. "I mean...write a scroll AND memorize the two spells for yourself as well..?"
A lone, dark figure slinks out of the surrounding forest--it's the black panther. She carries and deposits a half-eaten...ex-antelope or deer (a rather young and/or small one) at Gunther's feet. She then turns and pads over to the covered wagon, slipping under it and lying down. She seems to rather like this "portable den".
Lian Friday December 3rd, 2004 6:06:00 PM
"What would Elese least expect from us?" Ponders the monk, still trying to be crafty and come up with a fail safe solution.
"Gunther, maybe if we send the horses away, the panther can go with them and hopefully we'll see them again at the Tower." Says the elf hopefully.
Gunther Friday December 3rd, 2004 7:21:24 PM
The large warrior laughs very loudly. "If I could send her off vith de horses as you say, den dere vould be no horses ven ve come back. She vould eat dem. She's a vild beast, and she vill follow her instincts..." Gunther sits back and tries to think through the situation at hand...
Milo Sunday December 5th, 2004 9:28:24 PM
Seeing that the whole teleport issue is a lot more complicated then he initially thought, Milo sheaths his sword, and patiently waits for the leader types to come to a resolution. A thought occurs to the halfling, and he sits down and starts rummaging through his personal possessions to take stock.
Olana Monday December 6th, 2004 12:22:11 AM
The elf makes sure everything on the wagon is secure, and takes this moment to feed and water the horses, just in case a fast chase was on the cards. She cocks her head toward the half-eaten carcass. Yeesh, now how to get that on the back of the wagon without every carrion-eater for miles coming to take a look.
Lian Monday December 6th, 2004 1:31:19 AM
The monk just shakes his head and the whole situation with the teleport. "Can't we just ride horse like everyone else?" He smiles under his scarf.
Brother Bertram Monday December 6th, 2004 4:05:33 AM
Bertram waits to see what the mages of the group can do, checking and rechecking his blade nervously.
DM Donna Monday December 6th, 2004 5:36:41 AM
OOC: Waiting for Figment to answer K'Nara's question. Hopefully will have a post for the entire group to respond to later today.
Figment Monday December 6th, 2004 9:29:33 PM
The mage looks a bit apprehensive about Ingrge attempting to cast a higher order spell than he is currently able, but relents. "I can scribe the scroll tonight and memorize two more tomorrow. I'd say that's as good as it is going to get. Ingrge can take 2 others, I can take 3, come back and get the rest for a total of 10 possible in short order. I will leave it to Ingrge to judge his own ability on it. He knows my technique and should be able to cast it without too much trouble.".
Lian Monday December 6th, 2004 9:54:17 PM
The monk looks at Figment and Ingrge, then at Bertram and back at Figment.
Lian notices that the other experienced magic users are nervous at the prospect of jumping in three loads and Ingrge using magic he's unexperienced casting, he speaks his mind. "If there is ANY doubt that we'll come up short the mark, I won't go. I'll drive the horses back to the Tower and watch out for the big kitty if I have too. And to answer the next question, 'yes' I am afraid of the mishaps that may occure in teleporting into the unknown. We maybe seperated for awhile or permenantly."
The monk stands, waiting for some sort of answer.
Vote of Confidence -- DM Donna Tuesday December 7th, 2004 5:53:19 AM
"My instinct is to have Figment try this teleport tactic." K'Nara says firmly. "Elese now knows somebody was scrying her and may have certain traps and such in place as it is--if we try to pursue her overland, she will definitely be able to set up nigh-unbeatable defenses...especially if that Blackshadow Hall is anywhere close by to where she and her group presently are."
K'Nara then assigns the watches:
1st Watch: Bertram, Athalorn and K'Nara 2nd Watch: Falin and Gunther 3rd Watch: Milo and Olana 4th Watch: Lian, Figment and Ingrge
"I had been considering letting you off watch..." K'Nara tells Ingrge with a grin, "But I wouldn't want you thinking that I was getting soft..."
If there are any changes to spell lists and the like, the players MUST email their changes to the DM before tomorrow's post.
Athalorn Tuesday December 7th, 2004 1:10:48 PM
The druid is quietly apprehensive about travelling by such magic, but voices no objection. He takes his watch silently, scouting from the sky every once in a while.
Falin Tuesday December 7th, 2004 8:13:59 PM
Falin spends his watch just out of range of the fire. Keeping an eye and an ear open for anyone possibly watching the group.
Lian Tuesday December 7th, 2004 11:46:39 PM
"I will take watch last." The monk sighs and its obvious to everyone that he's unhappy traveling in this fashion.
Olana d20+16=29 d20+17=31 Tuesday December 7th, 2004 11:58:44 PM
Olana is nervous and on edge during her watch, and glad of Milo's company. No particular reason she can think of for her edginess. Just one of those nights.
((Spot and Listen - DC 29 and 31))
Gunther d20+1=20 d20+1=9 Wednesday December 8th, 2004 12:22:19 AM
The warrior too is put on edge by the prospect of teleporting in. There was so much about this magic stuff that he didn't understand. But standing watch...that he understood. He takes up position opposite Falin and paces around the camp looking for any signs of trouble (Spot=20, Listen=9). When his relief shows up, Gunther forgoes sleep and begins to carve up the carcass of the animal the panther brought in...might as well have a nice breakfast before they magically pop in on the bad guys. Not that he really needed to eat a whole lot now a days... But still, couldn't let good meat go to waste. As quiet as possible, Gunther sneaks into the back of the wagon and retrieves a large cooking pot. Filling it with water and the meat, Gunther quietly scouts out the area for vegetables to add to the ad hoc breakfast stew.
Milo Wednesday December 8th, 2004 12:57:49 AM
Comfortable with the idea of teleporting, whether with Ingrge or Figment, Milo settles in for the evening. Sensing Olana's uneasiness, Milo spends his time on watch attempting to knead the tension out of her shoulders and neck with his nimble fingers. He hums a quiet tune while doing so.
Brother Bertram Wednesday December 8th, 2004 4:16:55 AM
Bertram takes his turn at watch, being extra careful due to possible attack from Elese and her henchmen.
Figment Wednesday December 8th, 2004 7:20:29 AM
The mage gets his supplies and scribes the scroll for Ingrge. He grimaces as the power flows out of him. Handing the scroll to Ingrge he says "Here it is, my friend.". He then goes to bed to get his sleep.
Lian d20+18=30 d20+8=18 Wednesday December 8th, 2004 5:07:05 PM
On watch. (Listen 30 and Spot 18)
Ingrge Wednesday December 8th, 2004 6:03:34 PM
Taking the scroll, Ingrge nods his acceptance and then starts studying it so that he is ready for the casting in the morning. During his watch he ponders what life would be like without complications and an unintended chuckle escapes his lips.
(ooc: Will send updated spell list, asap.)
Teleport Order -- DM Donna d20=3 Wednesday December 8th, 2004 6:53:11 PM
Fortunately for everyone, nothing happens on any of the watches. K'Nara has time to practice her pre-dawn bladesinger workout before the party comes together to see whom will be teleported to the place they all saw through Ingrge's Scry spell.
K'Nara tells Figment and Ingrge the list of people she'd like teleported in order:
K'Nara Milo Olana Brother Bertram Athalorn Gunther (& his panther) Lian Falin
Since both Ingrge and Figment are doing the teleporting, they are obviously not directly on the list, as the elf will teleport with whomever it is that goes with him, and Figment will arrive at the final destination (to stay) with the second set of people he may teleport.
K'Nara would like the panther to come along IF it is feasible--if not, they'll have to trust that the panther will not immediately attack the horses while the party is occupied elsewhere.
When Ingrge and Figment make their rolls, they must specifically call out each one they make and the roll result. (Both spellcasters are teleporting to a place that they've only seen once...but they both got a rather good look at it.)
Good luck!
Milo Wednesday December 8th, 2004 7:32:55 PM
Milo relaxes into his morning, eating breakfast, and assisting with the camp chores as necessary. He remains generally alert to their surroundings, in case unexpected company should arrive.
Figment d4+1=4 d4+1=4 d4+1=5 d4+1=4 d100=29 d100=34 d100=46 Wednesday December 8th, 2004 9:22:26 PM
The mage waits until everyone is ready to go. He begins by casting several spells on the fighters. K'Nara gets Cat's Grace +4, Bull's Strength +4, and Stoneskin 110. Olana gets Cat's Grace +5, Bull's Strength +4, and Stoneskin 110. He then prepares to teleport. Looking to Gunther he offers "I think I can get the panther if you can coax it to be carried by you.". Turning to everyone he begins to give instructions. "K'Nara, Milo, and Olana can come with me on the first round. Bertram and Antalorn can go with Ingrge. I will then immediately come back and get the other 3. Everyone in each group must be in contact with each other. Any break in the chain and the others get left behind. No room for error on the execution part. The rest is up to me and Ingrge to get it done...". After a pause he says "I know some of you may question my decisions about good and evil, but you can trust me to do my very best for the group - always have, always will. I will get you all to the other side.". He waits for everyone to get in their groups and get ready - and for K'Nara to give the go ahead. (rolled 29, 34, and 46 for teleport - should be just fine).
Falin Wednesday December 8th, 2004 10:38:31 PM
Falin prepares himself by taking out an arrow and knocking it in his bow. He will attept to touch Lian so that he is in contact, but still ready to attack if need be.
Ingrge d20+7=24 d100=57 Wednesday December 8th, 2004 10:38:49 PM
As Figment casts his spells on several party members, Ingrge whips out a number of scrolls and casts their contents on several other members, Bull's strength, stone skin 110 and owl's wisdom on Bertram, cat's grace, stone skin 110, and bull's strength on Lian, Cat's grace and bull's strength on Gunther, Bear's endurance, cat's grace, and owl's wisdon on Athalorn, cat's grace, and bull's strength on Falin and finally he casts fox' cunning, bull's strength, and cat's grace upon himself.
Finally when everyone is ready Ingrge instructs his party to hold hands in a circle facing outward and then starts reading the scroll. (DC13 needed to be able to cast scroll of higher level - rolled 24)- on target roll 57
Gunther (Barkskin) d20+12=31 d20+12=28 Wednesday December 8th, 2004 10:40:22 PM
The warrior nods at K'nara and Figment's instructions. When the time is near, Gunther crawls under the wagon and attempts to coax the panther to come with him (Handle Animal=31). Gunther just shrugs as Figment talks about trusting him, though he does wonder why K'nara and Olana got spells cast on them and he didn't...guess that would come with time... Reaching into his backpack, Gunther withdraws a Barkskin potion and readies it. He checks and double checks his equipment.
As the time draws near, the warrior activates his floating shield and drinks his Barkskin potion. Then, just before they are about to teleport, Gunther attempts to pick up the panther and hold it in his arms (Handle Animal=28).
Active Spells: Barkskin 20min/20min (200rds/200rds)
Glannath Thursday December 9th, 2004 12:01:07 AM
The giant eagle cocks his head toward Athalorn, curious as to what is going on.
Olana Thursday December 9th, 2004 12:04:30 AM
Olana feels the tingle of Figment's Cats Grace spell, and gives him a nod of acknowledgment and thanks. "Here we go," she whispers to Milo.
Brother Bertram Thursday December 9th, 2004 4:27:20 AM
Bertram nods his head in gratitude at Ingrge the prepares for what they will face when they get to Elese's location.
Lian (Cat's Grace?, Bull's Strength and Stoneskin 110) Thursday December 9th, 2004 5:08:33 AM OOC: Ingrge (Kent), please cast something else besides Cat's Grace on Lian, he is wearing Gloves of Dex +4. He would appreciate a Bear's Endurance or Owl's Wisdom. :) Thanks!
The monk says goodbye and good luck to Merlot, his long time friend, best friend. He tells his friend to be safe and run straight home to the tower.
"Athalorn, can you speak to the all the horses and tell them to head to the tower, please." He more or less pleads to his druid friend to do this one favor for him. "I promised him he's be with me for this trip. That promise is broken. Please."
He doesn't flinch when Falin touchs him.
Kent (Consider yourself owl'swisdomed instead then.)
Poof--Gone! -- DM Donna (K'Nara, AC 25; HP101; Cat's Grace, Bull's Strength, Stoneskin Thursday December 9th, 2004 7:31:31 AM
The panther submits to Gunther's handling while the teleport spell is being cast.
The horses with reins have them knotted but the reins are not attached to anything, thus ensuring that--should the need arise--the horses are free to flee from any threat. The cart horses are simply left untethered...K'Nara is trusting that the herd instinct will have the cart horses remain with the others.
The leader of the Talons draws her sword and nods to Figment and Ingrge.
"I'm going to have Milo and Olana do a quick scout of where we appear..." the chestnut-haired fighter says, "...then we'll see how things go from there."
The party is teleported with the brief sensation of disorientation and momentary dizziness that K'Nara recalls has been told to her is the normal reaction to using such spells. The slight vertigo-like feeling is brief...and everyone can see in the early light that they have, indeed, appeared in the spot where Elese was last viewed: they all stand facing that large, spherical bush with several tall branches sticking up out of the top--each branch itself topped by a smaller sphere of leaves.
K'Nara's eyes practically pop out of her head, so bizarre is the entire scene in this area:
The landscape surrounding the party is almost unbelievable--trees unnaturally twisted and shaped. Bushes trimmed to resemble different types of animals. Green grass everywhere in between and perfectly manicured to 4 inches in height.
In fact as you look more specifically, you realize that the trees and bushes are space equidistantly (more or less) from each other and you get the feeling that if you were to look down upon this from above that the plants would form some sort of wild pattern or design. There are plants growing next to each other that aren't normally found within 100 miles of each other. But perhaps worst of all there is no sign of true wildlife. Every now and then a prettily colored bird, a rabbit or squirrel will be spotted but nothing larger can be seen in your general vicinity.
Everyone in the party must roll a Spot check versus DC17 to notice someone moving in the shadows of the large, misshapen tree to the north of the party--it's Elese, and she is lowering the lantern that she has in one hand.
"Instinct serves me well," Elese says suddenly, startling anyone who didn't notice her, "Though I underestimated your ability to catch up, Talons, I hope I haven't underestimated the abilities of my newest ally...good-bye and good riddance!" The elven female steps into the shadows and disappears--but the Talons have something else to worry about.
"How in The Wold is that tree moving when there's NO wind..?" K'Nara asks out loud as the tree starts undulating and turning transparent and finally vanishes and in its place is this...what can only be termed as a monster.
Where there once was a tree, albeit a very strangely shaped tree, there now stands a truly huge beast with a vaguely reptilian head, a lion's body and the wings of a dragon. The creature's back is set with curved black barbs and its long tail ends in a cluster of deadly spikes. At the moment its head is turned away from you, but you hear the loud intake of air associated with a sniff. As it turns several things are noticed; its blood red eyes and a red glowing serpent on its chest that seems to be fading as it comes toward you.
"It doesn't look happy..." K'Nara points out.
DM's OOC: there is a PreCombat Site Map in the email for the players.
Athalorn (Bears Endurance, Cats Grace, Owls Wisdom, Haste - AC 26, HP 95/95) Thursday December 9th, 2004 11:15:28 AM
Athalorn does indeed speak with the horses before travelling, (ooc cast Speak with Animals) but asks them to remain where they are, and at the first sign of trouble they are to flee back to the Tower. He speaks softly, apologising for not being able to stay.
He feels disorientated when they arrive, but is reassured to see that Glannath is still withthe party.
Once he looks at the surroundings, he is horrified by the twisted forest that they see before them. As he is about to go and help the trees, ignoring Elese, the creature appears and forces his attention. He taps his boots together in an instant (ooc: boots of Haste) and immediately begins chanting, his eyes close and his hand goes to the culverclove leaf in his pouch. (ooc cast lightning storm)
Gunther AC30, HP 73/73 (Barkskin, Bull's Strength, Cat's Grace) d20+1=15 Thursday December 9th, 2004 5:05:23 PM
Completely disoriented from the teleport spell, Gunther drops down to the ground in a half crouch, half stagger...releasing the kitty as he does so. Trying to get his bearings, the warrior is totally clueless to his surroundings. "Should ve scout out de are..." And then he sees it... Gunther's instincts scream at him to run hard and fast. But then he spots the kitty next to him and the others. No, if he flees they will die. Pulling his two bladed sword from his back, Gunther activates the blades and waits for a few seconds for the mages to cast any spells that they want. Not knowing what else to do, Gunther attempts to move up to the "creature's" side...hoping to provide a flanking position for one of his allies.
Ingrge Thursday December 9th, 2004 10:18:14 PM
Upon seeing Elese, Ingrge immediately cast a spell upon himself (improved invisibility) and then move 5 feet due east to near the edge of the path.
Glannath Thursday December 9th, 2004 11:11:15 PM
The big bird pushes off and takes to the skies, circling low.
Olana d20+16=19 Thursday December 9th, 2004 11:41:33 PM
(Spot DC 19)
Seeing what looks like Elese in the distance, the elf makes an uncharacteristic exclamation and dives for the nearest shrub (straight ahead?), bow and arrow at the ready. Now what was going on with that tree thing?
Lian (Owl's Wisdom, Bull's Strength and Stoneskin 110)AC 32, dodge 33 vs the beast d20+8=20 Friday December 10th, 2004 2:45:42 AM
(OOC: Thanks Kent, appreciate your help.)
The monk clinches his fists as he sees Elise. Then he sees the beast and his eyes grow large (Spot 20). "Uh oh. No scouting this time friends." He goes Fully Defensive.(standard action)
Brother Bertram Friday December 10th, 2004 3:48:28 AM
Bertram sees the hulking creature ahead of them and raises his axe, still unsure what was causing his woes, but very sure than an axe would damage such a creature.
Face to Rather Large Face -- DM Donna Friday December 10th, 2004 7:08:45 AM
The creature inhales heavily--yes, it's quite apparent that he's sniffing the air. Then, a rumbly, rather creepy voice issues forth from its tooth-laden mouth, demanding in Common:
"Where is he..? Where is...Parnoth..?"
DM OOC: those trying to see where Elese went to can no longer see her...she has disappeared from view.
Athalorn Friday December 10th, 2004 1:51:52 PM
The druid holds onto his spell, focusing on its energy, and waits for the creature to make a move. His words were unexpected, but Athalorn is concentrating too much to speak back.
Milo d20+23=36 d20+26=46 Friday December 10th, 2004 8:40:02 PM
Knowing that he needs to close the distance quickly and quietly, Milo uses the locally grown topiary as cover to maneuver around the other side of the monster. (OOC: Hide DC 36, Move Silently DC 46)
Gunther d20+3=13 Friday December 10th, 2004 11:27:55 PM
Gunther breaths a sigh of relief. Parnoth...he is after Parnoth. A small measure of the terror griping his chest fades. Gunther looks around at the others and smiles...yes, caution would be in order... The warrior likewise attempts to duck down among the shrubbery (Hide=13). He looks around to see if he can spot the panther. A small voice in his mind screams for him to give the thing what it wants...tell it where Parnoth is so that it will go away... but for know he is able to push it down.
Ingrge HP 84/84, AC 22 (fox' cunning, bull's strength, cat's grace , improved invisibility) Saturday December 11th, 2004 3:30:58 PM
Activating his boots of speed, Ingrge continues moving in the direction he started, in order to flank the beast and stay about 60 feet away from it.
Olana (Cats grace) Sunday December 12th, 2004 1:02:40 AM
Olana stays behind the front shrub, bow at the ready. A tree that talked, or maybe it wasn't a tree at all. And it wanted Parnoth? Step right up and we'll point the way, she thinks recklessly.
Falin d20+2=12 Sunday December 12th, 2004 4:55:35 PM
Falin misses the movement off in the distance that is Elese, but he does notice the rather large beast in front of him.
"What if it is a creation of the lantern? I thought it had something to do with destroying him. What if it is this?"
In case it decides to attack the group Falin knocks an arrow, aims, and stands tall. Now it is just a waiting game.
Brother Bertram Sunday December 12th, 2004 8:15:53 PM
Bertram looks at his axe uncertainly, torn between talk and actions, his worry at his clumsiness makes him choose for speech with the creature. Stepping to the right, away from the others somewhat, Bertram speaks loudly; "We also seek this Parnoth you speak of! We seek to right a horrible wrong that he has caused, Will you aid us?" Bertram looks to the others and shrugs embarrasedly and mouths the words, "Couldn't hurt?"
It's Great to Communicate -- DM Donna Monday December 13th, 2004 6:46:39 AM
Gunther's feline sidekick crouches low and hisses at the great vaguely-reptillian winged thing.
The oversized creature inhales heavily once more, then fixes an eye upon Bertram, the only one to have spoken directly to it.
"I no longer smell the great green irritant," the creature growls, its very voice making the hairs on your skin prickle with revulsion, "...and--somehow--this very place seems no longer the same..." Its red eyes narrow and it casts its gaze about.
"Parnoth is no longer here, but I can't be sure that you aren't his agents here to destroy me." The beast pauses, its spiked tail lashing in a rather lazy fashion. "I should probably just eat you all now...but that wouldn't be sporting--and you might be enemies of Parnoth, so it also wouldn't be quite so polite on my part." The creature considers for a moment and then smiles, showing a row of oversized, sharp pointy teeth.
"I know--a riddle! I'll ask you a riddle and--if you can answer it correctly--I will be satisfied that you aren't here to assassinate me, so I will not eat you. That sounds fair, don't you think...?"
K'Nara looks from the creature to her colleagues.
"We aren't here to kill you, so I guess we'll just take up your challenge, then." the leader of the Tines agrees.
"Well, then, listen carefully..." the creature says.
"He starts and ends two Common words...one painfull in love, one painfull in everyday matter. Do you know what two words I must be..?"
K'Nara scowls in concentration, but she can't think of a thing to say except mumbling something about hating riddles.
The large, dangerous-looking beast looks over the rest of the party.
"Each of you may guess the answer--once each." it says smugly. "If any of you are correct, I will hold up my end of our bargain."
Figment Monday December 13th, 2004 7:58:24 AM
The mage decides to hold casting. "If we attack each other we attack our own allies. Parnoth is also our enemy. Tell me, would his minions or agents say such a thing knowing he watches? We would be killed by him. If we are to be tested, fine. But should we at least first know who we are tested by? At least we should be civil.". The mage begins thinking about what the answer might be.
Ingrge Monday December 13th, 2004 5:10:44 PM
Pondering from his invisible position staff in hand, he thinks to himself. I hate riddles ... wait, a minute. HE starts and ends both words... Painful... Love.... everyday... so He--------he and He-------he. Hmmm, Ahhhh.
Without thinking and actually forgetting he was invisible, he starts speaking. Well, for a moment there I was actually worried, but then I remembered that I have forgotten more riddles that you have probably ever known, so I would have to say that the two words are Heartache and Headache
Lian Monday December 13th, 2004 10:31:52 PM
Clueless, the monk just scratches his head. Then Ingrge answers the riddle. "Clever. I would have never figured that." The elf smiles.
Milo Monday December 13th, 2004 10:34:26 PM
Milo snorts from where he is hidden in the brush, and then steps forward, "You have got to be kidding me. That is child's play. The two words are heartache and headache." The halfling sheaths his short sword and strides forward, a smile on his face. "The story of my life!" The halfling chuckles at his own private joke. OOC: whoops... that is what I get to jumping in with the answer before reading everyone else's posts.
Olana Monday December 13th, 2004 11:23:34 PM
Olana steps from behind the bush, trying to keep a straight face. She's having a hard time, as her face keeps wanting to wrinkle up in an 'Ewwwww' gesture - as in Eeeeeeew what a horrible creature, and Eeeeewww a riddle.
Thank all the trees in Culverwood for Ingrge and Milo. "Yes," she says, completely ripping off the answers those two suggested. "Heartache and headache."
Gunther AC30, HP 73/73 (Barkskin, Bull's Strength, Cat's Grace) d20+1=11 Tuesday December 14th, 2004 12:07:00 AM
The large warrior breathes a huge sigh of relief as Ingrge and Milo answer the riddle. Analytical reasoning wasn't exactly his thing... He stares up at the gigantic creature, hoping for all his worth that the thing is honorable, but with their recent luck doubting it will be. And where was that Elise person??? (Spot=11) This was all so complex and confusing.
The Final Answer -- DM Donna Tuesday December 14th, 2004 7:50:56 AM
The creature eyes Figment with a bemused stare.
"I am not in the habit of speaking with my food before I eat..." it says in the tone of one with a LOT of confidence that dinner will soon be served.
However, both Ingrge and Milo pipe up, and the rather smug look on its vaguely reptillian face fades into astonishment.
"Well, well..." it replies, nodding an acknowledgement to the pair, "...I've been using THAT one for a couple hundred years--I suppose that it's about time that I switched up riddles. Yes, the two words are heartache and headache, as they both start AND end with the "H" "E" of the first line in the riddle...the heart will ache in matters of love, and quite often the head aches in everyday matters." The creature stetches itself, emphasizing its size and power with the movement, then shakes itself before flopping down in a relaxed crouch.
"You answered the challenge fairly, o ye of the Noble Races," it says equably, "And so I won't eat you. As I consider you my intellectual equals, I can properly introduce myself: I am Aveler Hookback. My kind have been dubbed 'manticores' by your types, though I, myself, am no ordinary member of the race."
"I am K'Nara Illutu," the female fighter introduces herself, still not sheathing her sword, "These are my friends..." She introduces each of the Talons in turn, even nodding to the panther that is crouched by Gunther. "We're called the Emerald Talons, and we're trying to retrieve an artifact that used to belong to Parnoth." Aveler looks around with a scowl.
"Parnoth isn't here." K'Nara says immediately, eliciting a snort from the manticore.
"Aye, my nose told me as much," the beast said airily, "Though my last memory of this place included the green galoot being here for our Duel of Honor."
"Parnoth and Honor--in the same sentence..???" the leader of the Talons asks sarcastically. Aveler chuckles.
"My initial reaction exactly." he says. "But I had issued the challenge and Parnoth seemed to have accepted it--it was to be a Duel of Honor, which meant we were to use only our natural abilities. I was locked in combat with him and lining him up for a lovely volley of spikes--" The manticore lashes his tail as an example of the maneuver and a half-dozen or so giant spikes fly past one side of the Talons and embed themselves in the ground, in one of the trees and even in a rock.
"--when that cheater produces a lantern out of nowhere and shines it at me..." Aveler growls in remembrance, "...laughing about how it was his natural ability to use magic to summon forth anything he wanted. I was rooted to the ground--and I remember nothing after that until you lot appeared." K'Nara exchanges glances with Figment, Ingrge and Milo.
"Sounds like he used that Serpent Star on you." K'Nara says. "How long ago was this Duel?"
"It was springtime..." Aveler responds, adding a date that occurred a good three-hundred-fifty or so years ago.
"He enchanted you for over 350 years, then." K'Nara informs the manticore. "We're trying to catch up to the thieves that stole the Serpent Star and get it back before Parnoth and his crew can. We believe that they're heading for a place called Blackshadow Hall."
"You plan to give it back to the dishonorable green git?" Aveler asks, a dark expression on his face.
"No--we can't let it fall back into his hands again...nor stay in anyone else's." K'Nara says automatically. The manticore looks thoughtful for a moment...then he stands on his four feet so suddenly that the panther bolts into the spherical bush for cover.
"I'll be right back." Aveler says, springing into the air and flying up high into the sky, circling widely for a moment or two before landing nearby again.
"Blackshadow Hall is an outpost carved into the side of a hill that lies about another three days' march from here--IF you follow the trail as this other group is doing." the manticore says slyly. "However, there is another trail that parallels their course a bit...but it will have you get to the stronghold half a day or so before this other group will. Promise me that you will not let Parnoth have this lantern back should you win it from your thieves and I will give you the directions on how to locate the shorter trail."
"By my honor!" K'Nara says immediately in Elven--and Aveler looks at her in surprise.
"Elven honor..? From a human..?" he says. "What IS The Wold coming to?" Aveler snorts and then nods.
"Very well, then--I agree as well." He proceeds to describe the terrain that leads to the parallel trail...Olana and Athalorn (as well as anyone else with a smattering of Survival or Nature Knowledge) can easily locate this trail from Aveler's description.
"As long as Parnoth loses," the manticore says acerbically, "I don't really care who wins."
With this, the huge winged beast leaps into the air once more and flies off, leaving the Talons to plan their next move.
Figment Tuesday December 14th, 2004 8:27:19 AM
The mage hopes that Elise doesn't see the huge beast leave. "I'd say we hoof it. Perhaps we can force our march and get there even sooner? Two and 1/2 days of hiking is tough but we can do it on little sleep - maybe 2 hours each night. We can sleep and prepare when we get there. It would be very nice for us to be her welcoming committee...".
Falin Tuesday December 14th, 2004 11:05:37 AM
"I agree with figment. I would like nothing better than to get there well before the rest of them in order to set up a nice welcome. I have been waiting a long time to get a shot at Parnoth and this is just a quick stop on the way. I would gladly sacrifice sleep for that."
Athalorn Tuesday December 14th, 2004 11:08:52 AM
The druid relaxes, the magic of his spell dissipating from him. He nods at Figments words. "Let us be gone at once, Talons. The sooner we reach this Blackshadow Hall the more time we have to prepare ourselves. I will scout ahead with Glannath." with that, he jumps into the air, once again to become his eagle form, and he immediately takes to the skies.
Glannath Tuesday December 14th, 2004 12:29:41 PM
Woah! Glannath dives low to get out of the way of some great 'thing' that takes to the skies all of a sudden. Finding a thermal he climbs higher, a little ways away, watching as the great beast returns, then flies off once more.
He looks a bit spooked as Athalorn takes flight and joins him, still puzzling over the mystery animal. Couldn't eat it, that was for sure.
Brother Bertram Tuesday December 14th, 2004 12:32:44 PM
Bertram grins, his uncertainties forgotten for a moment as things seemed to go right for the nonce. He says a prayer of thanks to his gods then keeps an eye out for any other surprises to appear from the Culverwood.
Lian (Owl's Wisdom, Bull's Strength and Stoneskin 110) Tuesday December 14th, 2004 7:27:37 PM
(How long do Ingrge's spells last?)
Lian just watches and lets the others talk. The last time he personally dealt with something THAT large, he was almost eaten.
"Goodbye great one." He says as it leaves.
"I suggest, if possible, that we make haste to this path it spoke of. Truth be told, the sooner we're done the better I'll feel."
Gunther Tuesday December 14th, 2004 10:32:49 PM
Breathing a huge sigh of relief, Gunther looks over at his kitty with a "that was a close one" kind of looks.
Gunther nods at the others. "Yes, let us make haste. Dough it vould be good for de spellcasters to rest before ve met up vith dis Elise again, I tink. Can ve do dat?" As Gunther awaits the response, he rechecks his equipment and prepares to set out.
Milo Tuesday December 14th, 2004 10:42:17 PM
Smiling, Milo perks up, "Oooh, I like him. Yes, yes, lets get a move on. Who needs sleep when there is an evil plan to foil." The halfling looks most eager to be on the path.
Ingrge Tuesday December 14th, 2004 11:48:35 PM
From out of nowhere Ingrge's voice again pops out. "Well that was a great waste of spells." Hmmph, maybe next time I shouldn't answer the Darn riddle."
(ooc: the spells from ingrge will last 8 hours)
Olana Wednesday December 15th, 2004 1:44:34 AM
Olana is thinking that the whole situation is rather odd. How did Elese fit into all this? She watches the huge magical beast disappear and prepares to set off with the others.
Brother Bertram Wednesday December 15th, 2004 4:19:26 AM
Bertram makes ready to leave, preparing for a long, forced march.
Lian Wednesday December 15th, 2004 7:52:10 PM
(Owl's Wisdom, Bull's Strength and Stoneskin 110... 8 hours)
The elf just meditates prior to heading off. He will, however, bring up the fact that time is passing quickly.
Falin Wednesday December 15th, 2004 10:05:14 PM
On the way Falin starts some small talk. "You know for how much I would like to filet Elese and then feel her to some evil creatures I can't help but wonder if she in some way wants Parnoth out of the way. She was the one that used the lantern to awaken the beast from its imprisonment. I wonder if she is out to grasp some prize that parnoth keeps and she needs the lantern to do it."
Hitting the Trail -- DM Donna Thursday December 16th, 2004 7:06:54 AM
"Well...the horses have been told to go home if we don't come back, so we don't have to worry too much about them." K'Nara says. "We'll follow the trail--but I don't like the idea of a forced march...too many other things in this area can try to get the drop on us if we're unprepared. We will go as fast as we can, but we'll still have rest stops for the spellcasters to replenish their magic."
The Talons find and follow the path Aveler told them about--it continues southeasterly, away from the river. After hours of travel, they are able to stop to have the spellcasters rest and rememorize their spells. (OOC: yup, you guys are now "recharged.")
As soon as they are able, the Talons move on, following the trail through the eerie, unnatural growth for almost another day when the terrain around them suddenly changes. It looks as if someone sucked all the moisture out of the earth, turned everything grey and brown and stuck gigantic slabs of stone forcefully into the earth. It is here that the path turns southward and the path you are following heads into the desolate mountains.
"It's official..." K'Nara announces sarcastically, "...welcome to Izen..!"
As the party starts heading inward and upward, things start to heat up literally. Several times the talons come across sulfuric hot springs and even cracks in the earth that have steam whispering out.
Athalorn and Glannath are in the sky, doing their usual aerial recon work, when suddenly a pair of boulders sail up into the sky right by them. The missiles miss by a comfy margin--but Athalorn just knows that the huge rocks didn't get launched at the eagles by accident!
A mile or so down the trail behind the birds, the rest of the Talons hear the dull double-thud of...
"Thunder..?" K'Nara asks, squinting skyward, "...that's odd--no clouds in the sky..."
Anyone with Survival or Nature Knowledge and can make a check versus DC20 realizes that the sound really can't be thunder--it had to have been something else like an explosion or something.
Athalorn d20+19=39 Thursday December 16th, 2004 1:18:45 PM
Athalorn is horrified by the lands around them as they travel - so unnatural, so devoid of life. When the boulders pass them by, the druid is confused, but knows this is no natural phenomonen. Shortly thereafter, he wheels around, and heads back to the party, fearing they ought to stick together at the moment...
Lian Thursday December 16th, 2004 3:46:20 PM
After hearing the thunder, that reminds him of the two dragons who fought Parnoth some weeks back... lightning, thunder... seem to go hand in hand. In fact, one of those young dragons did end up fleeing, its alive somewhere.
The next day when the path is rained on by boulders, the monk speaks. "Well, it is quite clear that Izen has officially welcomed the Talons... right?" He looks at K'Nara, knowing the joke wasn't all the great.
Figment d20+23=37 d20+23=31 Thursday December 16th, 2004 10:09:18 PM
Noting the thuds from the first day and then the second, the mage suggests "Why don't you ask Antalorn and his bird to not travel by air. It seems they are attracting attention - and may in fact be a signa to Elise that we are still well...". The mage keeps his feelers out for anyone attempting to scry (Spellcraft 37, Arcana 31).
Milo Thursday December 16th, 2004 11:52:41 PM
"I'd like a closer look at what did that." Milo begins to move ahead, but pauses for direction, should some be forthcoming.
Gunther d20+1=14 Friday December 17th, 2004 12:13:09 AM
Startled by the sudden appearance of the boulders in front of them, Gunther instinctively drops to a crouch. "Vell, dat's not very nice. Somevon doesn't have very goot manners." Drawing his sword, Gunther checks around to see if he can find the stone throwers (Spot=14).
Olana d20+14=33 Friday December 17th, 2004 1:16:30 AM
((Survival Check DC 33))
Scouting a little ways ahead, Olana trys to keep everyone from stepping in any hot stuff. As for the thunder - 'It isn't natural, more like a distant magical explosion,' she offers by way of explanation.
She looks ahead ruefully. What a joy this land was going to be. The boulders come as no surprise.
Brother Bertram Friday December 17th, 2004 4:30:04 AM
Bertram pulls up quickly as the rocks fell from the sky. He looked around trying to place the location they fell from.
Falin Friday December 17th, 2004 5:22:27 AM
"I wonder if they are caused by some seismic anomoly. Or maybe some volcanic activity. Or someone just does not like us."
Whassup, Whassup? -- DM Donna Friday December 17th, 2004 7:10:42 AM DM OOC: I have edited my previous entry, but I have to apologize to Gunther's player--the party on the ground does NOT see any boulders landing--actually the double-boom was the sound everyone could hear in the distance. Only Athalorn and Glannath know that the sound was caused by the boulders launched at them. I accidently left a sentence at the end of the entry that I should not have.
We will just consider that Gunther and Milo--along with the rest of the party--are now alert and rather suspicious. There is nothing nearby to investigate just yet.
K'Nara frowns contemplatively.
"No clouds...nope, I don't think it was thunder after all..." she agrees with those announcing their opinions of the unnatural double-boom. Then she notices that Athalorn and Glannath are winging their way back to the group.
"What is it?" K'Nara asks the druid, definitely convinced that something was up. "Is something amiss..?"
Athalorn Friday December 17th, 2004 10:35:35 AM
The druid lands within the party, after screeching at Glannath the command to keep hidden. He changes rapidly back into human form. "I am not sure what to report, for I know not the cause. But the noise you most probably heard was boulders being launched at Glannath and me. Let us take care now, we have unknown assailants ahead of us..."
Ingrge Friday December 17th, 2004 5:38:30 PM
Listening to Athalorn for a moment, Ingrge smiles. Actually I expect thatthe thumps we heard were the boulders, that were aimed at you, hitting the ground. I would be very worried indeed if they were making that noise just by pssing through the air.
Milo Friday December 17th, 2004 7:43:49 PM
Milo remains alert, "I'm prepared to investigate further if you'd like." The halfling keeps moving, urging others to do the same.
Lian Friday December 17th, 2004 9:17:07 PM
"I'll go with you Milo, if you wish?" Suggest the monk.
Gunther Friday December 17th, 2004 11:59:00 PM
The warrior listens to Athalorn's report with rapt attention. "Boulders, huh? Vell lets just hope dat whoever threw dem hasn't found de rest of us yet. Dat could get interesting." Gunther is very wary to say the least.
Figment Saturday December 18th, 2004 9:53:03 AM
"Staying together and as hidden as possible is probably the best course. Since you were in eagle form the assailant probably thought you were lunch and nothing more. If we continue our forced march we can get out of the area before we are discovered. It would also prevent Elise from possibly seeing us from her trail - which if only a 1/2 days difference in length will not be too far away.".
Falin Saturday December 18th, 2004 4:56:01 PM
"But, if they were aiming at you then they have outstanding eyesight." Falin says while looking up, his hand blocking the sun. "We should not hide too close together either. One boulder would end the group."
Pressing On -- DM Donna Saturday December 18th, 2004 7:10:53 PM
"It's not a good sign to have boulders launched at you when you're a high-flying eagle in the air..." K'Nara opines out loud. "...We all may as well go with Milo and see what's up the trail--if we're lucky, we might be able to do as Figment says and pass whomever--or whatever--it is before we're discovered." She sounds rather doubtful of this, though. There is little cover for all that the terrain is covered with rocks and sulfuric springs.
Moving quickly along the trail, the Talons begin to scale the first of several peaks that lay between them and the end of the passage...when another boulder lofts through the air and crashes to a landing in the middle of the path in front of them.
"Somehow, I don't think that Figment's idea is going to work..." K'Nara points out the obvious...as well as nodding at the pair of tall figures that loom at the top of the path:
Two obviously male humanoids with ruddy complexions...one has deep red hair on his head and face, giving him a shaggy appearance; the other has only a moustache and his hair is more orange in appearance. Both have blackened half-plate on over clothing that is red and orange and shades of brown...but, more importantly, both of them are about ten to twelve feet tall.
"Oh, great..." K'Nara mutters, eyeing the pair (who are smirking at the party), "...giants." She sighs.
"They COULD have hit us with the boulder, but they didn't..." she points out. "...any suggestions as to what to do next..?"
Figment Saturday December 18th, 2004 10:27:25 PM
The mage sighs at their rotten luck. "Since if they wanted to hit us they could it seems to me they are not interested in killing us. Also, we cannot outrun them so somehow I think speaking to them would be the best approach - and hopefully they are in a good mood...".
Athalorn Sunday December 19th, 2004 4:08:45 AM
The druid ignores Ingrge's remark, as the rest of the party seem to do. Upon seeing the giants, he agrees with Falin and Figment both. "Let us spread out as Falin suggests, then approach these giants."
Falin Monday December 20th, 2004 6:25:44 AM
"Perhaps we can confuse them with a riddle." Falin says with a smile. He knocks an arrow and gets ready, just in case.
DEH Monday December 20th, 2004 8:07:26 AM

I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.
DM OOC: Ooops! The email I sent to the group acknowledges you gone until Monday after Xmas, but I meant to say Monday, January 3rd.
No worries, David--you'll be considered duly covered and I'll see about getting someone to post for Figment for you during the holiday.

Parley-Voo..? -- DM Donna Monday December 20th, 2004 9:32:10 AM
"Makwah gun-detta pollyock dooma yuck???" one of the giants bellows in a very threatening tone.
Who amongst the Talons speaks Giant..?
Olana d20+16=18 Monday December 20th, 2004 6:11:56 PM
'Polly yock doome yuck?' Olana whispers to Milo. 'What does that mean?'
She has an arrow nocked and is fully prepared to leap out of the way of the mighty stone-throwing humanoids. Her eyes search for a weak spot, but she has to admit, they do look rather sturdy fellows.

Lian Monday December 20th, 2004 6:56:20 PM
The monk trying draconic then sylvan. "Would you please repeat that?" He asks in both languages.
Then he thinks back to a few things he and Bertram talked about. "Brother, don't you speak giant??"
Lian retrieves a potion, just in case.
Brother Bertram Monday December 20th, 2004 7:39:06 PM
OOC-Donna: Bertram does speak Giant!
Figment (He speaks giant) Monday December 20th, 2004 9:49:23 PM
Looking to the others he sees who wants to answer. "I can speak to them unless somebody does...".
Gunther Monday December 20th, 2004 10:30:22 PM
The warrior sighs. Giants...of course it had to be giants. Leaning over to K'nara, he whispers. "Couldn't ve just become invisible and sneak past dem? It might be easier dan trying to talk to dem." Gunther waits to see what happens, not wanting to draw his weapon and appear threatening.
Falin Tuesday December 21st, 2004 6:14:20 AM
"Does it look like we can go around them?"
Repeating Oneself -- DM Donna Tuesday December 21st, 2004 6:34:42 AM
From the wondrously dangerous terrain that surrounds the party at present, you all can tell that you won't be able to easily or quickly skirt around the two giants--besides not knowing what lays immediately beyond them. They COULD be the only giants here...or there could be any number of giants just beyond the peak they are guarding.
It's anyone's guess at this moment.
"They know we're here already, Gunther," K'Nara points out in a low voice, "Besides--I doubt we have enough Invisible spells...or even enought time to cast them...before they could realize what we're up to and do something nasty in retaliation."
However...both Bertram and Figment know that this pair of giants have just told the party:
"You (DM OOC: actually a rather rude word for)trespassers--what do you think you're doing here?"
Judging by their tone, you can all tell that it is NOT a friendly question.
"Unless they're immediately threatening us with a fight of some kind," K'Nara tells the cleric and the wizard who can understand the giants' gutteral speech, "We don't want to have to battle these guys as well--we're trying to get to Blackshadow Hall. Try to...sweet-talk them if you can." The chestnut-maned woman's expression, however, conveys her lack of conviction that one can sweet-talk a giant.
DM OOC: I'll be taking the conversation to email once Bertram and Figment post their responses to the giants' initial question to the party.
Figment Tuesday December 21st, 2004 7:38:08 AM
He says to the K'Nara, "They are asking what we are doing trespassing here.". He turns to the giant and begins to speak with him quite eloquently - and kindly - in their gutteral tongue. (Suppose I'll wait for email).
Brother Bertram Tuesday December 21st, 2004 3:48:27 PM
Turning to K'nara, Bertram raises a brow at the phrase, 'sweet talk'. Nodding he turns back to answer the Giants. With an grin on his face, Bertram answers back in the language of the creatures. "Kiena djea sioe eisl dew duros Parnoth, fina diu cundi dew e` Domi e' Gargul, ipik grandor er finis!" Bertram glances at Figment for a moment then back at K'nara. "I hope this sweet talk works, they appear quite angry."
Olana d20+17=25 Tuesday December 21st, 2004 7:27:30 PM
What a strange language, thinks the elf as Figment and Bertram talk to the giants.
Of course she gets to wondering how Figment and Bertram know how to talk to giants in the first place. No doubt there were stories to be told about that!
While keeping her eye on things, she tries to look as tall as possible. No mean feat for a five footer.
Spot check DC 25 for any possible approaching danger.
Milo Tuesday December 21st, 2004 10:02:23 PM
Stunned at the size of the giants, Milo shrugs his shoulders and whispers back to Olana, "Perhaps it means, greetings fellow travelers, welcome to our soup pot." The halfling stifles a giggle.
Lian (AC 31) Tuesday December 21st, 2004 10:41:38 PM
Lian smirks at Milo's comment.
He has a feeling that the Talons will likely pass the giants with no major confrontations. However, to be on the safe side, he stands, ready for an attack from a stone thrower. (Full Defensive)
Gunther d20=11 Tuesday December 21st, 2004 11:36:17 PM
The man shrugs at K'nara's comments. He wasn't talking about going invisible right now...maybe sneak off a bit. Sighing, he listens carefully to the mage and the cleric as they try to talk to the giants. They would see how the small talk worked out, then they'd find another way if they needed too. Gunther looks around nervously at the two giants, trying to see whether the "sweet talking" is working out alright (Sense Motive=11).
Athalorn Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 3:25:24 AM
Athalorn just listens to the strange language, smirking at Milo's comment, and keeps an eye on Glannath.
No Speakee Common..? -- DM Donna Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 6:37:45 AM
Olana remains alert, but no other giants (or anything else) is in the area...thank goodness.
Figment's intention to try to negotiate with the large humanoids is cut off by Bertram's counter-challenge to the giants. The pair of males stand, blinking for a moment.
"What did you SAY???" K'Nara asks, her instincts telling her that Bertram's words didn't carry too much sweetness.
The younger-looking of the two giants scowls and reaches for a nearby boulder...but his older compatriot simply begins to laugh, speaking to Bertram directly. His sustained guffaws and pokes at the other giant eventually make the younger one relent his reach for the boulder and even chuckle (albeit reluctantly) at the joke the older giant finds in Bertram's dialogue.
After a moment or two of laughing, the older giant speaks again, his mirth subsiding quite a bit, the only thing he says that everyone in the party can retain is the last word of his speech: "...Gratbelch."
Both of the giants look at the party with a dark, penetrating stare.
"Whatever either of you might say..." K'Nara advises in a low hiss, "...try not to make it as close a call as Bertram's last comments...!"
Figment d20+23=32 Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 7:31:21 AM
Tensing a moment as Bertram's comment has a mixed reception, the mage chuckles with the older one. He then responds to the older one's statement in what sounds to be a more diplomatic way, knowing he could never have said what Bertram said and pulled it off. "We are going right by their lands. We need permission from their king - Gratbelch - to gain safe passage. I have asked for an audience. Stealth is not much of an option any more.".
The mage searches his mind for any reference to this clan of giants or a king Gratbelch (Knowledge Royalty/Nobility DC 32).
Ingrge Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 10:23:24 AM
Gratbelch? (ooc. was that a short a or a long a)
Watching the giants carefully Ingrge ponders soething that is bothering him. "Since when do giants live in these parts? The nearest giants are supposedly to be found in the eastern Scab, not in the borderlands of Izen and Emerald."
When Figment translates what is going on Ingrge shakes his head.
"Are we sure this is wise? Whe should be able to take these two, but who knows how many more will be around with their leader."
Falin Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 5:16:11 PM
"Is there any chance that they are not REALLY aware of our numbers? Could most of us travel with thm and one or two of us slip off to prepare our destination for guests? I am just afraid if we take the time for an audience we are going to loose and advantage we might have had with this short cut." Falin ponders for a moment. "Unless one or two of them might be enticed to accompany us and help..."
Lian Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 5:30:12 PM
"Their laughing, that has to be good, right?" He asks hopefully, knowing full well that it could be much worse.
Milo Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 7:41:27 PM
Milo's mirth dies down, and the halfling begins to grow impatient quickly, muttering to himself, "Any day now folks... while my clothes are still in fashion." Looking up at the two giants he comments, "Anybody here sprekenzie halfling? Take us to your leader... we're on a mission!"
Brother Bertram Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 8:00:28 PM
Bertram never takes his eyes from the giants before him. "I stated that we were on a quest to help save the kingdom and that it would be in thier best interest to help us rather than hinder us, more or less".
Olana Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 11:41:46 PM
Willing to take this latest turn of events in her stride, Olana is okay about meeting this 'Gratbelch' fellow. It was one thing being in a hurry, it was quite another to be squashed flat beneath one of those boulders.
She's just glad someone can talk to these creatures.
Gunther Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 11:48:20 PM
The warrior looks rather impatient. "Vell dis is just fine and dandy. Not a problem...we'll just have a little tea vith dem...maybe dinner. And den de kitty can put on a show for dem after ve're done." Taking a deep breath, Gunther relaxes a little. "Dere goes our lead."
Figment Thursday December 23rd, 2004 8:42:39 AM
Noting the concern of the others he mentions "I'm sure there will be more of them down this road. I would say staying together is the best approach. There seems to be a lot of them - according to them. We could probably turn back but then Elise would beat us there. They do not appear evil - just protective or their border."
What to Do..? -- DM Donna Thursday December 23rd, 2004 4:13:19 PM
The two giants mutter between them--even Bertram and Figment can't say exactly what they speak of, because they are keeping their voices low.
Figment vaguely recalls some rumors of a clan called Fireheight that fell out of favor with their fellow giants in the Scab some years ago (surely not more than two decades..?)--the reason seemed to have something to do with a dispute over the disparity of tribute exchanged between the clans or something like that.
Finally the giants turn their attention back to Bertram and Figment.
"The Fireheight Clan is first in all things," the oldest says in his native tongue, "We care nothing for the petty concerns of the countries of small people...however, Gratbelch may wish to speak to you himself, as he holds both Domi and Gargul in great esteem. Weldon will fetch forth our leader whilst I keep an eye on you." The shaggy giant nods to the younger one, who departs. He unsheathes a greatsword and holds it at the ready as he stares at the Talons with a set expression.
"All right...NOW what?" K'Nara asks, as she still doesn't know exactly how the dialogue has gone.
Milo Thursday December 23rd, 2004 7:34:14 PM
Seeing the size of the sword, Milo swallows... hard... and then reaffirms his position, standing with arms crossed, and a stern expression on his face.
Brother Bertram Thursday December 23rd, 2004 8:01:44 PM
Bertram answers K'nara while they waited; "The one has went to fetch thier leader. He will probably wish to speak to us as this one claims he holds Domi and Gargul in great esteem. Either that or they are going to skewer us if they get the chance. I am betting on the latter." Bertram grins and runs his thumb along the edge of his axe, testing its sharpness. He murmurs a prayer to both of his gods as he waits for the giant leader to receive word of thier visit.
Olana Friday December 24th, 2004 12:09:06 AM
"Do you think he'll be long?" asks the elf, wondering what to do while they wait for the giant leader. "Knowing our luck he'll be in the middle of his afternoon nap."
She gives the remaining giant one of her sweetest smiles.
Lian Friday December 24th, 2004 1:54:43 AM
The monk waits for the negotiations to conclude.
Falin Saturday December 25th, 2004 2:00:07 AM
While he waits he will go through his stuff and check all of is gear for wear or damage.
Ingrge Sunday December 26th, 2004 5:01:18 PM
Hmmmph, why are we waiting? Right now there are only two of them when the one leaves there will only be one. If we can't take out one giant we need to retire.
Lian Monday December 27th, 2004 7:45:19 AM
Lian nods in agreement at Ingrge's statement.
"I agree, but do we really want to risk a clan of giants hunting us while we are on our mission? It seems their willing to talk."
Gunther Monday December 27th, 2004 4:33:44 PM
The warrior just sits down on a boulder, impatiently waiting for something to happen.
Why Wait? -- DM Donna Monday December 27th, 2004 5:33:00 PM
K'Nara glances Ingrge's way, then smiles.
It is NOT a nice smile.
"You know, you DO have a very good point there, Ingrge..." K'Nara says, rummaging through her backpack and bringing out the scimitar that was within it. Then she advances on the lone giant, holding the blade out in both hands as though to offer him the weapon.
"Wait until he's distracted...then dogpile on the giant." she orders the Talons, then speaks to the taller male:
"This is the best of blades--the finest you can expect to ever see..." the chestnut-maned leader of the party says.
Shaggy eyes the approaching female, but his gaze drops to the well-made weapon in her hands. His sword dips as he instantly evaluates the workmanship and the quality of the metalwork...
...how do the Talons react?
Lucia Monday December 27th, 2004 6:21:25 PM * It is about time you notice my superior workmanship, perfectly balanced weight, and sticking beauty. I was wondering how long it would take for you to ditch that blade for the far superior one. *
Falin Monday December 27th, 2004 6:23:08 PM
Fallin begins to go up the left side of the path to the right side of the lone giant. Awaiting the sign to strike.
Lian Monday December 27th, 2004 8:46:19 PM
Lian is not at all happy that the Talons have taken to dishonorable tactics, but he will backup his friends when needed.
Brother Bertram Tuesday December 28th, 2004 6:26:24 AM
Bertram looks at Ingrge and K'nara with dismay plainly upon his face. Making a decision he steps in front of the lone giant, standing in the way of his friends. "Friends, We are not like this scum, surely we will act honorably in this?" Bertram keeps his axe lowered but his intention is plain.
Gunther Tuesday December 28th, 2004 9:02:31 AM
The warrior grins at K'nara's order. Finally! Some action!! But then Bertram speaks up. Morals...why did everything have to be black and white...gray was really a whole lot easier. Gunther sighs. He takes up a position to the right of the giant but looks over at Bertram as he protects the giant. "Desperate times call for desperate measures. Ve don't vant to kill him, but ve need to get around him and qvickly. Come, Broder, surely you can see dat. Elise is slipping through our fingers. Ve need to move quickly, not stop for tea and a nice little chat."
Olana d20+14=19 d20+16=33 Tuesday December 28th, 2004 7:02:53 PM
Olana stops absently chewing the end of her braid and responds to Ingrge. 'Yes but doesn't it depend on how long - ' She stops, seeing K'Nara pull her sword.
Immediately her eyes move to middle distance, and the quickest, safest way through.
((Survival DC 19, Spot DC 33))
Lian Tuesday December 28th, 2004 7:25:57 PM
"Yes, I agree with Brother Bertram."
Milo Wednesday December 29th, 2004 1:01:15 AM
Milo sheaths his weapons and stands resolute, "We had an agreement with the giant. It isn't a matter of whether or not we can 'take him.' This is a matter of principle that says we are to be heroes. A hero keeps his word, regardless of who he gives it to. Do not devalue your word." Milo moves to stand next to Bertram.
Test Passed...Mostly -- DM Donna Wednesday December 29th, 2004 6:23:21 AM
K'Nara smiles at Lucia's words.
*I'm glad to see that you're in agreement with me...and I'm glad to see that most of the Talons obviously have misgivings about jumping the giant--not because of his size, but because of our mutual agreement that we Talons keep our word...even if it's implied.*
"Well, he's taken with the scimitar..." K'Nara points out to the others, "...maybe the weapon will be enough to get us by without having to fight anyone, eh..?"
After initially peering at the proffered weapon, Shaggy the Giant grunts something that Figment and Bertram roughly translate into "Not bad for a short sword..."
Shaggy returns to his alert status, glancing around at the various members of the party and gripping his sword in both hands. He doesn't attack anyone, though he has a frown on his face.
Brother Bertram Wednesday December 29th, 2004 6:28:53 AM
Bertram sees the return and and frown and quickly questions the giant in his language. "What is the problem? Is your king coming or not? If he isnt we have to be moving on and quickly. Speak up you big lout!"
Lian Wednesday December 29th, 2004 5:39:03 PM
The monk waits to see what happens.
Milo Wednesday December 29th, 2004 8:10:24 PM
Satisfied that nothing bad is going to happen, Milo shrugs his shoulders, smiles, and moves quickly to Olana's side where he remains silent.
Gunther Thursday December 30th, 2004 12:08:37 AM
The warrior sighs and reluctantly moves back away from the giant. Things were so much simpler when he was with the orcs... if it was weaker or smaller than you, you killed it. If not, you ran away. Still, there was that whole evil thing. Gunther finds a boulder to sit down on and starts cleaning his weapon.
Return of the King -- DM Donna Thursday December 30th, 2004 6:41:57 AM "Gratbelch comes at his own speed, dwarf," Shaggy says rudely, though his expression does show a bit of concern that his fellow giant hasn't returned yet, "The king of the Fireheight clan doesn't appease the smaller races...they appease him!"
"Watch it, dear Brother..." warns K'Nara, seeing and hearing the displeasure in the giant's voice, "...the last thing we need at this moment is to tick off a clan of giants..."
Thud...thud...thud...heavy footsteps approach before the cleric can translate out loud what Shaggy just growled to him.
The younger giant returns with an older giant in tow. This third giant is easily fifteen feet tall, with dark red hair and beard that is braided in a rather untidy manner.
"Who is it that disturbs King Gratbelch..?" demands the newcomer in Common. "And why should we bother to let ye pass through Fireheight territory?"
Falin Thursday December 30th, 2004 10:22:50 AM
"Wow, that's not something you see everyday." Mutters Falin under his breath.
Lian Thursday December 30th, 2004 8:27:47 PM
Lian looks at the red-headed leader. "Hey, didn't I just say that?!"
The elf looks at the giants, and for some reason, the thought enters his mind, 'They don't look so tough, we can take 'em.' He shakes the thought from his head.
Brother Bertram Thursday December 30th, 2004 8:57:57 PM
Bertram grins insolently at the towering creature, "Well for one reason I am unsure you can stop us King of the Giants. We travel on a quest with the approval of Domi and Gargul. I would not want to offend powers such as these. What say you great King? Will you aid the powers of the World or merely be a note in history that tried to prevent the will of the Gods? Imagine if you were an aid to this great victory! I await your word Large One" Bertram holds out his holy symbol of Domi from his chest and opens his hand revealing the mark of Gargul to the giant's eyes.
Milo Thursday December 30th, 2004 9:28:01 PM
Milo smirks thinking how easy it would be for him to pass through these lands completely undetected. However, the thought occurs to him that he really couldn't accomplish the goal at the end of the road by himself, and so he smothers the idea, and steals himself, waiting to hear the reply of the mighty giant king.
Olana Thursday December 30th, 2004 11:34:16 PM
Olana stands watching, next to Milo (sensing within him a wild bundle of barely tamed energy), doing her best to appear pleasant and unthreatening. She hopes Bertram has the right ideas of diplomacy with these large fellows, otherwise things were going to get a bit exciting, and not in a nice way.
The Price of Passing Through -- DM Donna Friday December 31st, 2004 7:18:35 AM
Gratbelch's small and beady eyes (...well, small and beady for a giant...) fix upon the dwarf.
"Whatever your mission is, dwarf," the King says loftily, "I wager 'tis doomed to fail with a stunted one as the leader for his higher-ups." However, it's clear that the sign of Gargul makes the giant bite off any other additional "humorous" comments. Gratbelch's gaze goes from the shorter dwarf to the taller human woman holding out the scimitar in offering.
"Tribute is all to my kind, as ye well know," Gratbelch says (and, indeed, Bertram and Figment are well aware that the ego and prestige of most giants is directly tied to the loot they extort from the smaller races that they bully, as well as the value of the tributes exchanged between clans), "I would have a wagonload of gold and a wagonload of iron for allowing you passage..." The King shakes his head and sighs gustily--and you can all smell the fetid stench of old ale and unbrushed teeth from where you stand.
"...however, 'tis obvious you have no wagons," Gratblech points out, "...though you DO seem to have Domi and Gargul on your side. Although the offering you're making is rather small, I'm prepared to accept it."
K'Nara sighs with relief and steps forward to hand Shaggy the scimitar.
"Yes...she's a mite small, but I'm sure she'll warm my bed nicely..." Gratbelch leers at the redheaded bladesinger. K'Nara stiffens.
"WHAT???" the leader of the Talons demands. "Hey--I'm not part of the tribute, you big lumpy lout! Just the sword!!!"
The youngest giant, however, reaches for K'Nara--
DM OOC: Shaggy and the youngest giant are only about fifteen feet from K'Nara...all three of them are about 60 feet from the rest of the Talons.
Gratbelch is about 25 feet to the right of Shaggy, the young giant and K'Nara, but he's also another 35 feet away from them, too.
The terrain is angled and rocky (you were trying to go through some peaks before you were interrupted, if you recall), but there is nothing by way of good cover where the Talons are at the moment--neither boulders nor scrub.
After you've posted your actions, I'll come up with and email the players a diagram of what character is where.
Falin Friday December 31st, 2004 9:22:22 AM
Falin runs forward in front of K'Nara.
"The female human is not for the giving. She belongs to another and we are all sworn to protect her."
Falin continues, "I recognize this may inconvenience you so," Falin reaches into his pack and pulls out a weathered package wrapped in leather, "as a token of trust I will leave you with this," Falin swallows hard has he offers up the package, "I am a Bowyer and Fletcher and these are my tools. Nothing can ever replace these because these have been passed down through my family for generations. Their worth to me is more than the entire Wold. I will leave these with you, but I will return for them and when I do I will craft for you a bow like none your kind has ever seen."
"Picture this your lordship, "Falin steps closer, "you would be sung about by bards becasue of the bow I would craft for you. You would live forever in the minds of people all across the wold because of your bow and the great ability you would wield with it."
Brother Bertram Friday December 31st, 2004 9:44:33 AM
Bertram sighs and grips his axe but even now he cant help but grin and to K'nara he whispers, "Well you should really consider what they are asking for, Anything for the peace talks, eh?"
Gunther Friday December 31st, 2004 9:58:14 AM
As the giant reaches for K'nara, Gunther jumps off his boulder, grabbing his two-bladed sword in the process. "Like de oders said, de lady is not part of de deal." He starts moving toward Shaggy, itching for a fight. After all, look where diplomacy has gotten them so far. They should have jump the one when they had the chance. Now they're going to have to fight three giants.
Milo Friday December 31st, 2004 9:11:23 PM
Worried about what they'll attempt to claim next, Milo draws his short sword and steps between Olana and the giants. A snarl escapes his gritted teeth.
Lian Saturday January 1st, 2005 12:27:06 AM
Lian moves slowly off to one side. (About 60ft)
Olana Saturday January 1st, 2005 3:15:15 PM
Olana rolls her eyes. "Are giants always like this? We'd better start negotiating, and fast. I have that truthsayer shortsword in my back pack, if that'll help."
Athalorn Monday January 3rd, 2005 4:51:42 AM
ooc: Apologies for my protracted absence - real life taking over I'm afraid.
Athalorn has watched the discussion so far, and waits to see how Falin's offer is received. However, he has a strong feeling that his spear will be needed soon, and so clutches it firmly in his hand.
Ingrge Monday January 3rd, 2005 8:35:37 AM
(Sorry all I got called out of town on a family emergency.)
Raising his eyes at K'nara's rashness of stepping forward and of her look, Ingrge chuckles for a moment when he realixzes how what he said might have been misunderstood.
As Gratbelch reaches down for K'nara, Ingrge activates his staff and suddenly K'nara is not very clear any more. In fact she seems to be a bit blurred and out of phase. (displacement)
Figment Monday January 3rd, 2005 10:14:05 AM
OOC: I think its the younger one reaching for K'Nara...
The mage stands stoicly but prepares to cast...
Brother Bertram Monday January 3rd, 2005 7:45:40 PM
Bertram starts forward axe at the ready, "Then lets negotiate by all means!"
Lian (AC 29 or 30, 47hps) Monday January 3rd, 2005 8:22:13 PM
Negotiations breaking down, spells going off and giants reaching for party members... this makes it apparent to Lian that perhaps talking is no longer possible. 'Bertram looks serious. Uh oh, there's his ax!' He thinks.
Lian retrieves a potion of shield and drinks it down. (Dodge vs the young one) Still standing 60ft off from the group.
Fight! Fight! (Combat Round 1) -- DM Donna d100=1 d20+14=26 d20+14=23 d6+2=7 d6+2=6 Tuesday January 4th, 2005 7:32:00 AM
Shaggy frowns, speaking in his native tongue, to which Gratbelch replies in kind. The youngest giant looks only all the more eager to seize K'Nara as he takes another step forward and continues to reach for her.
"Well, hey--don't forget your scimitar..!" the human bladesinger snarls, flipping the weapon up so that she now holds its hilt--then throwing the weapon directly at the giant reaching for her.
The scimitar sinks into Youngestone's left shoulder, causing him to roar in pain--
"Dang! I missed!" K'Nara bemoans. "I was aiming for his big, fat head..!"
DM OOC: K'Nara's throw is a Crit Hit for a total of 13hpd on Youngestone. Since just about everyone in the Talons was expecting the worst, you all get to act first in this round before the Giants can.
Figment 13d6(6+1+1+6+3+6+4+1+6+6+1+4+4)=49 Tuesday January 4th, 2005 8:35:33 PM
The mage decides that the chieftan should get at least a taste of what he's up against but still hold out the possibility that he might see reason. He blasts the giant reaching for K'Nara with a Freezing Sphere. He places it such that it hits the top of the giant but leaves K'Nara out of range (49 DMG). Glaring at the chieftan he retorts in his native language in a way seeming very unfitting for one of such normal aplomb. He glances at Bertram knowing his attempt was not as menacing sounding - but with the spell hopes it has the right effect.
Milo Tuesday January 4th, 2005 9:12:15 PM
Milo moves toward the giants his short sword at the ready. The halfling is ready for any offensive move they make. (OOC: Taking a double move toward K'nara [40 ft.])
Lian (AC 29 or 30, 47hps) Tuesday January 4th, 2005 9:35:41 PM
The monk double moves (120ft) forward toward Gratbelch. (Switches Dodge to Gratbelch)
(potion of shield, round 1)
Ingrge 3d6(5+4+6)=15 Tuesday January 4th, 2005 10:10:00 PM
Quickly casting a spell Ingrge sends the shaping of the one beast that Gratbelch fears the most. (Phantasmal Killer) Will save dc21 if fail must make a fortitude save DC 21 or die. If fail will and make fortitude then he takes 15 points damage.
Olana Wednesday January 5th, 2005 12:44:51 AM
Olana takes a few steps back from Milo then she can get a clear aim with her bow. She is disappointed that it has come to this. Stupid grabbing, greedy creatures. A shadow of her distant cousins' scowl paints her features as she holds, hoping the giants will have second thoughts after the spells thrown their way.
Gunther Wednesday January 5th, 2005 12:46:02 AM
Activating his shield, Gunther moves as far forward as he can. He grins as he moves forward, swinging his his sword from hand to hand in anticipation.
Brother Bertram Wednesday January 5th, 2005 3:29:35 AM
Bertram continues forward his axe at the ready. "For Domi and Gargul!"
Falin d20+12=32 d8+2=4 Wednesday January 5th, 2005 5:40:39 AM
Falin gets his bow and knocks an arrow. He fires at the king aiming for his eye (natural 20) for 4 points of damage.
"How's that feeling your lordship? Should have taken the bow..."

Both the scimitar throw and Figment's Ball of Frost send Youngestone reeling--he is definitely hurting after the icy spell thrown upon him...he nearly loses consciousness for all the damage he's suffered in one round (OOC: however, he made his Fort save versus DC20.)
But he isn't dead.
Milo and Lian move forward, with Lian ending up within ten feet of Gratbelch, who is now back-pedaling in retreat from a giant killer...rabbit.
(Just a note--it is Giant-Sized rabbit with pointy teeth and ears that look more like bat wings...thus a killer rabbit. ;) )
Gunther pushes forward to reach K'Nara's left side, and his feline sidekick is quick to trail him.
Bertram's advance brings him to within 15-20 feet of K'Nara's right side.
Falin's arrow strikes true, though the damage done to the giant is more irritating than debillitating.
Gratbelch roars something that seems to spur on Youngestone. Shaggy hesitates a moment, but adds his blows to the fray--
--Youngestone hacks at the elven archer who dared fire upon his king...the first of three blows is the only one to connect, but it hits Falin for 22hpd.
Shaggy uses his own greatsword against the newly-arrived Gunther. The older giant's experience serves him well as two of his blows land on the trainer of big cats, delivering 55hpd in one round. (Gunther must make a Fort check versus DC20 or fall unconscious.)
Gratbelch--in his panic to avoid getting bitten by the phantasmal "killer rabbit"--grabs Lian up (causing the monk 15hpd) and then HURLS the elf at his imagined foe.
OOC: I sent off that Combat Round 2 map before I resolved this aspect of the Round...I'll send another one to update where Lian ends up. Meanwhile, Lian must roll a Fort Save versus DC20. Making the save will halve the 22hp damage he'd otherwise suffer when he finally smacks into the ground.
K'Nara takes her part of the round to draw Lucia from the scabbard slung across the female fighter's back.
DM OOC: I'm emailing an updated map as well as the translation of the Giant dialogue to the various members of the party.
Lian (AC 29 or 30, 28 of 47hps) d20+14=26 d20+17=23 d20+9=15 Wednesday January 5th, 2005 6:54:35 PM
(OOC: Lian is an elf, not half-elf :))
(potion of shield, round 2)
The monk's vision suddenly goes black as he's engulfed in the massive smelly hand of the giant. Then suddenly, Ground, sky, ground, party, ground, sky... he's hurled through the air, flipping head over heels. Lian reaches (AC 26) out for one of the giants ears or hair to slow his fall. But all for not, he's just too high, he cruises past the party.
He sumersaults in midair to try to slow and shorten his descent. (Tumble of 23 to reduce damage from fall by 10ft)
Crash! The elven monk comes to a sudden stop in a small dusty crater. (Fort save 15, failed) The air is knocked from the monk. Lian tries to breathe for a few seconds, but his lungs won't fill. He gasps, getting a small lung of air and dust as he stands (Move Action), coughs and wobbles.
Lian relaxes slightly and glows momentarily. (Wholeness of Body, healed 18 hit points, Standard Action)
A glare of fire glints in the monk's eyes, as the severely wound elf begins to move toward the giants. He cusses in Draconic, hissing something sounding like, "I'm not a boulder you #$%&?$* giant."
(ADMOOC: Just a quick question. Isn't grabbing a grapple and if so, why didn't Lian get an opposing check? Also, grabbing and throwing are two seperate attacks, right?
As for the massive damage inflicted on Gunther in one round... if your using the variant mass damage scale on page 27 in the DMG, its 50 points of damage to a medium creature from a SINGLE attack, not a single round. The giant took two attacks on Gunther, or at least your post reflected that. Of course it could a special feat the giant has that I don't know about. ;) This isn't me as a player complaining, I'm talking as your assistant DM, Donna :))
Brother Bertram d8+9=13 Wednesday January 5th, 2005 7:30:55 PM
Seeing he is not close enough to attack, Bertram lowers his axe, praying to Domi for healing for his fearless companions.
(OOC Mass Cure Light Wounds-Everyone injured heal 13)
Milo d20+19=29 Wednesday January 5th, 2005 8:04:24 PM
Moving quickly, Milo dashes past Gunther. Dropping into a somersault, the halfling tumbles to the other side of Shaggy, and stands flanking the giant, opposite Gunther. (OOC: Made a Tumble check DC 29 to avoid provoking an attack of opportunity while moving past the giant.)
Olana d20+12=21 d20+12=15 d20+7=20 d20+7=18 d8+3=10 d8+3=7 d8+3=8 d8+3=8 Wednesday January 5th, 2005 11:24:28 PM
Shifting to aim at the giant called Shaggy, Olana fires arrows in quick succession. (Feats - Precise Shot, Rapid Shot -2 penalty) Hits ACs 21, 15, 20, 18 for 10, 7, 8, 8
out of the corner of her eye, she sees Lian come sailing past. Now THAT was going to hurt. She'll glance back afterwards to see if he gets up on landing.
Ingrge 5d8(6+8+5+7+6)=32 Wednesday January 5th, 2005 11:31:11 PM
Watching and waiting to see if the his spell is actally going to take care of Gratbelch, he sees that while it has scared him it doesn't seem to have killed him, so Ingrge levels his staff at the giant leader and lets fly with a bolt of searing light. 32 points no save.
Gunther (AC 26, HP 31/75) Animated Shield d20+7=23 d20+16=34 d20+16=17 d8+8=16 d6=4 Thursday January 6th, 2005 12:47:51 AM Wham..wham!! Before he even can figure out what's happening, a huge sword slices down into Gunther, slamming into the warrior and carving through armor and flesh. Blood flows freely to the ground and pools at the panther's feet and the mighty warrior is taken down a couple of notches as he staggers and struggles to get the world in a mostly upright position (Fort=23). Shaking his head, Gunther stares up at the two identical giants standing before him. Slowly Gunther's vision clears and the two figures merge into one very real, very angry Shaggy, A feline grin merges on his face as he spots Milo flanking the fellow.
Moving forward, Gunther engages the giant and swings for his hairy calves, determined to get a couple of his own in before he goes down. His sword arcs forward with deadly accuracy (AC 34/17 no crit for 20 hp dam).
DM Donna Thursday January 6th, 2005 8:04:43 AM
I'll give you a few more hours to have as many PCs as possible post for this round of Combat...
Falin (45 hp, AC 23) d20+12=17 d20+8=24 d8+2=10 Thursday January 6th, 2005 11:48:32 AM
Falin takes the blow and staggers a bit, but is quick to regain his footing. Falin draws back and aims for his attackers sword weilding hand. (OCC: I screwed up on the first roll. I didn't take into account the negative for targeting the hand.) The arrow strikes AC 24 and does 10 hp of damage.
Athalorn (sub Jay B) Thursday January 6th, 2005 4:50:13 PM
(lasts 9 minutes)
The druid casts call lightning storm (a prepared spell on his sheet).(casting time, full round)
OOC: What is the weather like currently? Cloudy? Clear?
Figment 11d6(2+5+4+6+1+3+3+6+5+6+4)=45 Thursday January 6th, 2005 8:12:01 PM
The mage decides a little electricity should liven things up and he casts an unusually arcing bolt of lightning that he send straight at the young one. Once there it arcs toward the old one standing next to him and the king as well - but fails to make it to the king as he is too far away. (45 DMG to Young one, 22 to the old one - Reflex save for 1/2). "Stupid dolts..." he muses as he sees some fairly innocent creatures dying that really don't have to if they will just use a little common sense. Oh well...
Lian (AC 29 or 30, 28 of 47hps) Thursday January 6th, 2005 10:14:19 PM
The monk just stands there, regaining his composure.

Lian lands ungracefully, but between his monk abilities and Brother Bertram's spell, the damage he suffers fades away.
Milo now flanks Shaggy--the nimble halfling easily outmaneuvering the oversized giant. (OOC: Shaggy's AoO roll was only 21.)
Two of Olana's four arrows hit the giant that Milo has somersaulted past, causing 18hpd.
Ingrge's Searing Light strikes Gratbelch, causing the king to bellow something in Giantish. (The odds are quite good that it's an obscenity of some kind.)
Gunther's damage to Shaggy makes the giant grimace.
Falin's arrow sinks into Youngestone's sword hand.
Athalorn gears up his magical storm, frowning inwardly because it's been dry and cloudless for the past forty-eight hours.
Figment's own spectacular bit of lightning fries Youngestone to a crisp--the overeager giant falls to the ground in a large, smoldering heap. Shaggy manages to dodge most but not all of the electricity. (OOC: the younger giant--who didn't have many HPs left--failed his Reflex save; Shaggy made his.)
The panther at Gunther's heels attempts to bite the ankles of Shaggy, but the hairy giant manages to dance out of the way.
As soon as the fried giant falls down, though, K'Nara immediately charges Gratbelch, holding Lucia in both hands, screaming at the top of her lungs and looking like a charging Fury from one of the Nine Planes of Hell (if you believed in such legends, that is.) Although able to close the distance between them, K'Nara can't attack on this round.
Gratbelch sees that the tall human woman is a little upset, so he draws his own sword...
Shaggy yells something over his shoulder at Gratbelch, who growls a reply.
Shaggy growls himself and then strikes at the targets in front of him: the panther, Gunther and Falin. The feline is sent hurtling back with an obviously fatal wound slicing open her belly (ooc: suffers 22hpd and so is now at -2hp); Gunther gets hacked for another 14hpd; and Falin's wounds add up to 23hp.
DM OOC: New map & translations forthcoming to the players.
Figment 13d6(2+4+6+6+6+6+4+2+5+1+1+6+1)=50 Friday January 7th, 2005 8:27:48 AM
The mage winces at Gratbelch's description of Ingrge's family parentage. "He wouldn't like that...". Seeing that the battle is not going to be avoided and that the king is the one egging it on, he moves to his left and casts again. He blasts Shaggy and the king with a cone of icy energy this time, making sure once again that he aims it so that it is above the head of those in front of him and that of the charging warrior woman (50 DMG - sv for 1/2). He makes sure to nail the king but tries to get Shaggy as well.
Ingrge 9d6(4+5+6+6+3+5+6+2+1)=38 Friday January 7th, 2005 5:31:12 PM
Chuckling at Gratbelch's antics he realizes what spell Figment is casting and adds a bit of near opposite enegry to the attack as well. knowing that he can not reach the king he sends his spell crashing over the heads of his fellows striking Shaggy squrae in the upper chest. (lightening bolt)38 points reflex DC20 for 19 points

Flanking Shaggy, Milo attacks the giant, striking key arteries in his legs. The halfling's sword is a blur as it does its work.(OOC: Critical threat with a 37, hopefully confirms on a 28 for 30 points of damage. Critical threat with a 37, hopefully confirms on a 26 for another 30 points of damage. Last attack hits AC 29 for 20 points of damage. That is a total of 80 points of damage to Shaggy.)
Lian (AC 29 or 30, 41 of 47hps) d20+11=18 d20+19=39 Friday January 7th, 2005 11:54:46 PM
Lian breaks into a run toward Gratbelch (120ft), leaping over the giant's body in front of him and is unable to attack this round. (If he has to, the monk will leap over the large corpse of Youngestone, running Jump over the giant's bloated body, Jump 18, Tumble 39)
Gunther (AC 26, HP 17/75) Animated Shield 2d8(6+7)+3=16 Saturday January 8th, 2005 12:05:47 AM
Primal, protective instincts fill the animal trainer as he sees his kitty fall to the ground mortally wounded. Irregardless of the personal danger, Gunther rushes over to the panther and lays his hands on her as he murmurs something in orcish (Cure Moderate Wounds on panther). He feels the tingle of magic flow through his body and into the panthers as he activates his tattoo (16hp healed).
Athalorn (sub Jay B) 5d6(5+1+2+6+3)=17 Saturday January 8th, 2005 12:08:15 AM
(Call Lightning Storm, lasts 9 minutes)
A finger of lightning strikes Gratbelch just as K'Nara and Lian get close to the giant leader. (standard action, reflex DC 19 for half, 17 electrical damage)
Brother Bertram d8+9=17 Saturday January 8th, 2005 2:56:26 PM
Bertram, torn between his ancestral hatred of the giant race, and his uncertainty of his ability to hit the creatures, and his duty as a Healer, cause him to again cry out to Domi to heal his his friends. Even as he feels the power leave his body, he begins to ponder that perhaps, this is to be his role in this affair. As soon as the power leaves him Bertram moves towards the feline praying that it was included in the healing power of Domi.
(OOC Mass Cure Light Wounds-17 healed on anyone injured-I pray that the cat is well too?)

Falin (HP 22, AC 23) d20+12=27 d8+2=5 Monday January 10th, 2005 6:27:37 AM
Seeing the cat go reeling Falin attempts to get Youngstones attention focused on himself while Gunther runs to save his friend. Falin looks at Youngstone, takes aim again, and fires (DC 27 for 5 hp).
Olana Monday January 10th, 2005 10:06:01 PM
Figuring the others had plenty going on for Shaggy, Olana starts running flat out to get in arrow range for Gratbelch. She moves as fast as she can.
Jay B Tuesday January 11th, 2005 12:42:53 AM
OOC: Hey guys. If your having issues with posting, let me know, let Donna know. We will help you to the best of our abilities.

Combat Round 4 -- DM Donna d20+15=21 d20+15=29 d20+6=20 d20+6=17 d20+11=19 d20+5=8 d20+20=35 Tuesday January 11th, 2005 6:53:09 AM
The King--being the primary focus of Figment's Cone blast, roars in pain...the mage definitely scored maximum damage on him. Shaggy, however, manages to weather the part of the iciness that strikes him.
Ingrge's lightning zaps Shaggy for 19hpd.
Milo does major damage to Shaggy--the giant is swaying on his feet.
Lian bounds back up to K'Nara's right side, once more within striking range of the Giant King.
Gratbelch bellows once more as Athalorn's lightning strikes him. The King is getting crispy around the edges...
Gunther's healing and Brother Bertram's spell combine to restore 33hp to the panther. Gunther and any other damaged PCs are healed for 17hp.
Falin fires into the unmoving Youngestone, greatly angering Shaggy.
Olana moves up so that she is now roughly between Figment's and Bertram's positions--within arrow range of both Shaggy and the King.
K'Nara spins Lucia in an attempt to strike Gratbelch, but between avoiding getting hit by the cold and lightning and the giant's own dodging of Athalorn's attack, her blows miss.
Shaggy shouts something in Giantish, to which Gratbelch replies in an angry sort of yell. Shaggy, however, shifts his focus onto Falin and swings down with his sword, snarling something that does not sound Giantish in the least.
Everyone except Milo, Lian and K'Nara can roll a Spot check versus DC18 to notice that Shaggy is striking down upon Falin's head--but with (strangely enough) the flat of his oversized blade. Any PC with the Spellcraft skill can roll a check versus DC15 to recognize that Shaggy is speaking some kind of magic effect activation phrase.
Shaggy's odd blow strikes Falin right upon the crown of his head with an echoey sort of hollow "BOING" sound...
...the archer promptly vanishes!
Nobody needs translation services to tell that Gratbelch is now cursing up a storm. He grabs as something around his neck and throws it on the ground, causing an explosion of golden sparkles that poof up and then settle on Gratbelch, Shaggy and the giant on the ground.
Immediately both Shaggy and the King look a lot healthier.
The giant on the ground, however, remains unmoving and unchanged.
DM OOC: translations & a map update are in the email to the players.
Oh...and the giants have AC21.
Athalorn (sub Jay B) 5d6(4+2+2+6+5)=19 Tuesday January 11th, 2005 7:19:32 AM
(Call Lightning Storm, lasts 9 minutes)
The druid activates his boots(free action, for 1 round), moves forward 60 ft and point his finger and the giant(Gratbelch) again(standard action, reflex DC 19 for half, 19 electrical damage)
Figment (Sub Jay B) 5d4(4+3+1+2+2)+5=17 Tuesday January 11th, 2005 7:31:50 AM
OOC: If I may be so bold, I'll sub for a bit for Figgy. Forgive me, I don't have his spell list.
The mage jockeys for position to see the King just a little better, moving NW of his current position. He casts Magic Missile(17 damage, no save) at Gratbelch.
Lian (AC 29 or 30, 47hps) d20+13=19 d20+13=21 d20+10=29 2d6(4+3)+2=9 2d6(1+1)+2=4 2d6(4+2)+2=8 Tuesday January 11th, 2005 7:44:32 AM
(Dodge vs Gratbelch, AC 30)
Feeling the healing hand of Domi once more, the monk steps forward and lays into the giant's kneecaps. (Flurry of Blows, all three are Stunning Attacks, Fort DC 19 or be stunned for a round.) The monk tingles from the electricity is in the air and so nearby.
His first blow slims off the giants kneepad, but the others are true (AC 19, 21 and 29 for miss(9 damage to his kneepad), 4 and 8 damage)
In Elven, Lian speak to K'Nara. "I'll try to move to flanking positon."
Gunther (AC 26, HP 34/75) Animated Shield d20+14=29 d20+9=15 d20+14=28 d20+6=18 d8+8=15 d6=4 d8+8=16 d6=2 Tuesday January 11th, 2005 10:01:18 AM
The big cat trainer breathes a sigh of relief as the panther rises to her feet. A murderous look settles on his face as he spins around and lays into Shaggy. His sword slices and slashes around the giant's calves as he dodges the magic flying in the air around him. With two powerful blows, Gunther manages to connect with the giant (AC 29 for 22 shock, AC 28 for 18 flame) as he screams a guttural orcish war cry "Tod zeichnet nahe mit jedem schwingen meiner klinge!!!"
Milo d20+18=36 d20+18=32 d20+18=30 d20+13=19 d4+2=4 5d6(6+4+6+2+5)=23 d4+2=4 5d6(5+6+1+2+6)=20 Tuesday January 11th, 2005 7:46:36 PM
Maintaining his flanking position on Shaggy, Milo becomes a blur as he continues to lash out at the giant. (OOC: Hit AC 36 for 27 hit points damage; Hit AC 32 for 24 hit points damage; the 3rd roll was a mistake, I shouldn't have rolled that; the fourth hits AC 19, which I'm fairly sure misses. So a total of 51 hit points damage.)
Brother Bertram 4d8(6+8+5+8)+9=36 Tuesday January 11th, 2005 9:13:44 PM
Bertram hurries to his closest companion, Gunther, and lays his hand upon the injured warrior. Again he feels the power surge through him and into his friend's injured body.

Loading up while on the run, Olana fires on Gratbelch as soon as she gets in range. She chews her lip in disappointment as only one of her arrows hit. (AC27 for 6) She'll step a little closer and reload.
Combat Round 5 -- d20+6=23 d20+16=30 d20+8=15 d20=15 d20+11=31 d20+11=24 d10+5=12 d10+5=6 d20+5=19 d20+16=33 d20+16=23 Wednesday January 12th, 2005 6:49:51 AM
Gratbelch suffers 9hpd from Athalorn's lightning.
Lian's blows do 12hpd to the King--but his knees remain unstunned.
Gunther's attack literally brings Shaggy to his knees, while Milo's follow-up with his especially lethal blows as well as Ingrge's magic ray finish off the stalwart giant, who harshly hisses something just before he falls forward onto his face.
Gunther must make a Reflex save to get out of the way of the falling body (versus DC15) or find himself pinned under the late Shaggy. The panther manages to scramble away in time.
Gunther is healed of 36hp thanks to Brother Bertram.
Olana's arrow strikes Gratbelch, though he scarcely seems to notice.
"I...WILL...be...honored...!!!" roars the solitary King as he lifts high his own great sword, using both hands as he targets K'Nara, who whirls her sword up and across the bottom of the smelly giant's belly.
(woot! Crit Hit confirmed: hits AC31 and 24, doing 18hpd.)
Gratbelch's guts fall to the ground, followed by the ex-King himself, the oversized blade slipping to the rocky ground with a heavy clang.
"Give my regards to Gargul, you lech!" the human bladesinger practically spits at Gratbelch, breathing heavily.
Combat is over.
Athalorn (sub Jay B) d20+19=29 Wednesday January 12th, 2005 6:55:14 AM
(Call Lightning Storm, lasts 8 minutes, 30 seconds)
The druid was not hurt in combat.
The druid deactivates his boots then takes to the air in his eagle form to see if he can spot any other giants heading that way. (Spot 29)
Figment (Sub Jay B) Wednesday January 12th, 2005 6:58:23 AM
The mage was unhurt in combat.
He strolls back with the group.
Lian Wednesday January 12th, 2005 7:01:53 AM
Lian looks towards the red-head after she spits. "That'll teach him."
"Well, I'm not walking that way." He points in the direction the giant came from.
Gunther (AC 26, HP 70/75) Animated Shield----Trapped under Shaggy d20+7=11 Wednesday January 12th, 2005 8:55:16 AM
Gunther lowers his sword as he sees his victim is finished and takes a deep breath...only to see a huge hairy thigh headed his way. Caught off guard, Gunther attempts to spin out of the way (Ref=11) but can't manage to make it in time. With a large Oooff all of the air is pushed out of Gunther's lungs as the giagantic hairy leg slams him into his formerly animated shield which the warrior now finds smashed into his face. Sucking in a huge breath, Gunther's face turns green and he begins to cough and splutter. With much effort, he manages to turn his head and finds, much to his horror, that he is now trapped but a couple of feet away from the dead giant's "privates". His face turns from green to pale as he bellows out "By Gargul's judgement seat, get me out of here qvick before I catch a disease dat Alemi's healers demselves can't heal!" Gunther claws at the ground in a desperate but futile attempt to free himself.
Ingrge d20+4=22 Wednesday January 12th, 2005 5:21:13 PM
Going over to help Gunther escape the slender, elder elf seems to be muttering something to himself.
"See what happens when you give the enemy a chance? Some of us get hurt and they still die. Wouldn't it be easier just to kill those we know are our enemies, before we get hurt or killed ourselves?"
Reaching his pinned comrade Ingrge bends down with his knees and gives the giant a lift strength DC 22 moving him enough so that gunther can get out from underneath.

Milo smiles an Ingrge, "How are we to know our enemies then? Shall every poor sap that crosses our path and demands an explanation as to our presence in their homeland be considered an enemy? Lets not judge everyone by appearances." Milo wipes the blood off of his blade, and sheaths the weapon.

The elf lowers her bow. "There was NO need for that!" she mutters in agitation. "No need at all. What is WRONG with these creatures that they have to keep coming out of the woodwork, attacking us time and time again."
She is upset and angry - at having to kill, mostly. She'd managed to avoid getting hit, but knew that some of the others had taken a beating. That made her angry, too. Her elven sensibilities prevent any further outburst, but deep inside, her head is like boiling magma.
Providing K'Nara is all right - jogging back to the group, she helps with getting Gunther out of giant pile. Her inner fury feeds her strength. ((STR Check DC 18))

"That King was just too greedy for his own good..." K'Nara states flatly as she sees Gunther get assisted from beneath the corpse of Shaggy. She wipes Lucia clean on the fur-trimmed tunic of Gratbelch.
"Too bad we had to kill the fella that landed on Gunther...he looked like he would have been reasonable." she adds, then casts Detect Magic on the late King of the Fireheight clan. Gratbelch's sword, armor and various other things on his person glow.
"Hmmmm..." K'Nara's eyebrows raise, "...check the other two for magic, will you..?" Her question isn't directed specifically at any one person, as she sheathes her sword and then begins to divest the King of his glowing inventory: a great sword, a set of giant-sized chain mail, a black iron ring set with a fiery ruby, a golden ring that is fashioned to look like a serpent, a slender wand made of smooth dark wood and a rod of black metal that has a small ball on the bottom and a larger one on top.
The wand and rod come from a crude hide satchel that also has about 1800gp in it as well.

With the aided help of Ingrge and Olana, Gunther manages to scramble out from under the giant's corpse. Brushing the dirt off, Gunther shudders. "By de gods, it vould figure dat de von place in de Vold vere dere is no vater I vould need to take a bath!! It's going to take veeks for dis stench to vear off." Gunther looks pointedly at Olana. "You vouldn't happen to have any perfume vould you?? Anything's perferable to dis stench!"
