Scene 2 - The Old Bakery

DM Jamie  d20=9 d12=11 d10=8
Tuesday December 21st, 2004 6:11:48 AM

You have entered a 20 x 20 foot room. There is an old musty smell in here that you would attribute to being closed up, but there is something else... Something vaguely familiar underneath it. It is the smell of something long dead.

The torchlight plays along the walls while you search the room. It makes it difficult to dicern what is there and what is merely a shadow from the torchlight. There are some display cases full of now old pastries and breads. There is broken glass everywhere and all of the furniture that once used to sit, welcoming visitors in, has been smashed.

You feel a faint breeze come from the back of the bakery. There are three doorways on the back wall. The doorway (door #1) to the left has no door on it, from the torchlight it looks as if the floor changes to a type of tile, but that is all you can make out. The doorway in the middle (door #2)has a door and it is slightly ajar. And the door on the right (door #3) is closed.

Tuesday December 21st, 2004 4:25:12 PM

"I wonder if this was a halfling bakery," mutters Vauhwyt, who is clearly cramped in the small room.

She does her best to look around as she waits for Olyn to give the thumbs up.

[OOC: Spot 8 Search 5. D'Oh!]

Theodore and Macaw
Tuesday December 21st, 2004 6:19:07 PM

Gripping his quarterstaff tightly, the young man appears concerned. "Should we take a glance down each passage to make sure nothing comes up behind us?" Otherwise, he waits for the all clear before taking any actions.

Vorelle  d20+9=17 d20+7=9
Tuesday December 21st, 2004 9:53:12 PM

Moving cautiously, Vorelle shifts to get a better angle and peers toward door #1, trying to get a better look at the room beyond.

[Move Silently 17, Spot 9]

Dietrich
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 1:43:17 PM

Dietrich feels reassured by Olyn's blessing and waits for the group to decide wich way to take. He keeps his bow aimed at the open door #1.

The fighter agrees with Theo's suggestion and would start exactly with door #1, but prefers to wait for the result of Olyn's magic.

DM Jamie
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 5:08:52 PM

Olyn, your magic reveals a source towards doors 1 and two. You dont get an exact fix, just in that direction.

Vorelle, you see that the room you are looking into from a distance is a kitchen of sorts. You see where flour has been poured onto the floor and sifted through. There are also utinsils and dishes strewn about the floor. The kitchen appears to go back some ways and expand to the left past your view.

Rose
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 6:54:24 PM

"Olyn, what did you find out?" Rose asks him quietly.

Olyn

nodding.

points towards door #1 and then to door #2. both hide undead. of which type I am unsure of but I can tell you for sure, that is what lies beyond.

moving his mace back to its holding spot, Olyn will remove a flask of Holy Water and await the discretion of the battle leader.

Berlon (Consecrate 6 hrs)
Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 11:48:20 PM

Since he's so new to the city, Berlon wasn't quite sure what to expect after his new Friends let him accompany them to deal with whatever abomination caused this problem.

"That's it, I've seen enough. Please hold one moment, my friends."

Berlon takes whatever help he can get getting off his backpack then digs out two items: a clear flask and a large satchel. He opens the satchel and starts to spread the entire contents out. Soon, a large portion of the room has been dusted with silver. He then pours out the vial while chanting the words to cast Consecrate.

Consecrate - duration 6 hrs, 20 ft radius aoe (centered 15 ft from door we came in if you want that level of detail) +3 charisma bonus to each turn undead check, undead get -1 to attack, dge and saves.

ooc - 1x Holy Water and 1x Powdered Silver removed from inventory, Consecrate removed from spell list. Yes, the stuff really was in the backpack, I lug around a lot of weird stuff...

Theodore and Macaw
Thursday December 23rd, 2004 10:42:33 AM

Theodore gulps when Olyn warns of the presence of undead. A swarm of goose bumps attacks him as nightmares of walking skeletons and zombies return to him in his waking hours. He shivers violently to dismiss the spell.

Looking about at the rest of his friends surrounding him, Theodore takes a deep breath. It helps...a little. "Courage, Theodore," he admonishes himself.

"What do we...do?" whispers Theodore, trying not to draw the attention of potential enemies.

Vorelle
Thursday December 23rd, 2004 2:14:14 PM

Somebody needs to find out what's behind that door.

Taking a deep breath, Vorelle starts toward door #1. She takes her time, moving slowly so she knows she'll move quietly.

[Taking 10 to Move Silently for a net of 19]

Vauhwyt and Mookie  d20+4=10 d20+9=23
Thursday December 23rd, 2004 5:26:00 PM

Vauhwyt follows behind Vorelle on quiet cat feet. [Hide 10, Move Silent 23]

She whispers to her friend, "When you open the doorr, would you like me to send a light down through the doorway?"

If she says yes, then Vauhwyt will cast Dancing Lights, creating blood-red will-o-the-wisps and sending them through the door after it is opened.

If she says no, or says nothing, then Vauhwyt refrains.

DM Jamie
Thursday December 23rd, 2004 5:47:03 PM

Let me give you a quick idea of the building we are in again. You are in the main shop right now. It is 20 x 20. At the back 9opposite the door you entered through) there are three doorways. One to the left, one in the middle, and one to the right. The doorway to the left is open. The doorway in the middle is ajar and the door on the right is closed. The doorway on the left is 1, the doorway in the middle is 2, and the doorway on the right is 3. I will post tonite.

Kathy - OOC Clarification
Friday December 24th, 2004 12:59:56 PM

I knew door #1 was open. What I meant in the post is that somebody has to find out what kind of Thing is behind that door (I probably should have said "through that door"). Zombie, skeleton, vampire, etc. Vorelle is approaching cautiously, trying to get a better angle on seeing through the doorway, since she hasn't seen the Thing yet.

Dietrich
Friday December 24th, 2004 1:48:57 PM

Dietrich awaits the results of the scouting, as he would make unnecessary noise by trying to accompany them.

Then he suggests the group moves to the kitchen (door#1), with him and Vauhwyt in front, directly followed by the 2 clerics, who shall try to turn the undead, followed by Theo and ROse and the rangers as rear-guard (there is another undead in behind door #2). Everybody keeps a flask of holy water ready for the case the turning doesn't work.

DM Jamie  d6=1
Friday December 24th, 2004 1:56:45 PM

You all feel a calming effect as Berlon casts his spell.

Vorelle begins to inch towards door number 1. As you get closer you see that the room continues back 10 feet and to the left about 20 feet. There are counter tops and pots and pans, looks like it was the kitchen. There are dishes, utensils, and dry goods strewn about the floor.

You can hear something shuffling through the room although it is out of your line of sight. As you turn to notify the party of what you have heard something leaps from the shadows of the kitchen. Vorelle I need a reflex save DC 15 to spring out of the way Otherwise the creature will collide with you and knock you back towards the group for 1 point of damage.

Everyone else sees something horrible jump from the kitchen. This foul creature appears more or less humanoid, but has mottled, decaying flesh drawn tight across clearly visible bones. It is mostly hairless and has a carnivore's sharp teeth. It's eyes burn like hot coals in their sunken sockets. A spot check DC 16 means you notice there is a ring on its finger

I need a fortitude save DC 15 against the stench coming off of the creature. If you fail you will be sickened. A sickened character takes a -2 penalty on all attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.

Vorelle [AC 17; HP 27/27; sickened]  d20+6=20 d20+6=8 d20+2=19 d20+2=16 d6+1=5 d6+1=6 d6+5=7
Friday December 24th, 2004 2:50:01 PM

Vorelle darts nimbly out of the way as the creature comes rushing out of the room [Reflex save 20]. She comes so close to the creature, though, that she is unable to fight off the effects of its stench [Fort save 8].

Gagging and choking, she is nevertheless able to draw her axes quickly [Quick Draw feat] and attack the creature as it moves into the main room.

[Hit AC 19 for 5 and AC 16 for 6. The axes are non-silver and non-magical, if that matters.]

Oh, and she does not spot the ring [Spot check 7].

Friday December 24th, 2004 4:08:43 PM

Vauhwyt is not detered by the stench (save 21), but Mookie is! (save 13) "Bleh! Bleh!" he caws.

But not deterred, both of them put their newly improved Tumble skills to good work. Mookie enters the undead's square (he is tiny so he has zero reach), making his Tumble check (16) so that he does not provoke an attack of opportunity. Then he tries to distract it so that his master can strike hard. (hits AC14 to Aid Another, even with the -2 penalty)

Vauhwyt tumbles around the monster so that she is on the other side from Vorelle. She does this out of reflex, not remembering that Undead are immune to sneak attacks. Still, the +2 flanking bonus is nice. Add that to the +2 Aid Another bonus from Mookie, and Vauhwyt's masterwork spear is at +7 to hit. But that does not matter! Her natural 1 fails badly!

"Boss!" Mookie caws, as she stumbles over her own weapon.

"Yeah, I know!" Vauhwyt replies. "D'oh!" She is too befuddled by her own mishaps to note the ring (Spot 11).

Berlon starts coughing violently as the stench overcomes him (save 10) and he is far too busy coughing to notice the ring. (spot 9) He lowers his loaded crossbow in his left hand and raises his Olde Woldian holy symbol around his neck in his right hand. His coughing and hacking makes his turning ineffective. (turn check = nat 1, 4 total (forgot to add -2 for sick) turns 1hd)

Coughing and swearing, the warrior moves forward with a flask of holy water. #If Olyn doesn't manage to turn it, Dietrich starts sprinkling the holy water at the undead.

A screach of fear escapes the creatures lips as it runs from you back into the kitchen. After it passes through the dor it runs to the left and passes out of your torch light.

As soon as he is gone, those of you suffering from its stench can breath easy again.

Theodore and Macaw
Monday December 27th, 2004 10:19:50 AM

"Was that the thing that bit Billi?" Theodore asks. "It was wearing a ring. My guess is that it's magical, though I can't tell for sure unless I get a closer look."

The wizard looks around to the others to see what to do next.

If Vorelle's axes appear to have had any effect, and if she gets an attack of opportunity when the thing goes past her, she hits AC 19 for 6 points.

Regardless of that outcome, she watches the creature as it flees, and tries to see where it goes [Spot 26].

[OOC: Note that Vauhwyt is using a reach weapon, so she may be more likely to get an attack of opportunity as the undead creature flees. If so, her AoO hits AC13 for 6.]

Vauhwyt immediately gives chase. "Come on, Mookie!" she calls. "Do I (cough) have to?" the bird complains. "Come ON!: Vauhwyt calls.

She chases after the creature. If she sees it, she will charge it with her spear. If she gets the chance, she hits AC9! Oh well!

Mookie, from behind, performs a flying tumble to the other side of the creature if he can -- Tumble check 22 keeps him out of danger as he maneuvers.

Berlon  d20+3=5
Tuesday December 28th, 2004 1:54:21 AM

Berlon doesn't like the idea of his new Friends running off chasing undead, but given the situation he dashes off as fast as he can (move 15) after Dietrich and Olyn. Since his crossbow is already loaded, he will take a shot at the undead if possible. If it happens, the attack missed (attack roll 5)

Dietrich
Tuesday December 28th, 2004 6:25:31 AM

Dietrich is relieved that anyone of his friends were hurt by the undead, but swears as it manages to run away.

He smiles at Olyn's comment and shakes his head in light desperation (only hoping they won't run in a trap), but runs after their impulsive comrade, saying to the others:

"Keep the original formation! Vorelle, Zayne, watch our back, Theo, Rose, keep in the middle!"

DM Jamie  d100=82 d4=2

Vorelle hits the creature as it runs past her back into the kitchen (AC 17).

As everyone charges after the undead with Vauhwyt and Mookie in the lead torchlight spills into the kitchen (door 1). There is alot of flour in the air from all of the movement. The creature is cowering in the back corner of the kitchen.

Vauhwyt attempts to pierce the side of the creature and instead hits the wall. Mookie has no problem tumbling into a good position on the other side of the creature.

The room goes back about 12 feet and to the left about 20 feet. There are three stoves/ovens across the back wall. The wall you just came through has countertop space running the length.

Wednesday December 29th, 2004 10:45:34 AM

Seeing that the undead can be hurt by mundane weapons, Dietich fires an arrow, but misses because of all the flour in the air. He drops his bow and fast-draws his beloved masterwork great-sword. With every other enemy, Dietrich would have thought of capture, but this rotting monster is another question.

The massive fighter says:

"OK, let's finish this thing off. Vauhwyt, wait for the charge. Open fire with missil-weapons! Don't waste magic on it and don't risk to get hurt (i.e. hth combat) until absolutely necessary!"

He keeps an eye on their back:

Theodore remains in the center of the group, as instructed by Dietrich, trying to peer over or around the taller folks in the front.

"What's going on? Are we winning? Is anyone hurt?" He seems very agitated that he can't see what's happening.

With his wand of burning hands at the ready, he blasts at the undead creature if it should get out of hand and away from the rest of the group.

(use wand of burning hands on creature if able to get a clear shot from where he is and won't hit any allies for 4 damage; half if makes reflex save vs DC 14)

Vorelle [AC 17; HP 27/27]  d20+7=21 d8+1=2
Wednesday December 29th, 2004 1:19:10 PM

Reluctant to re-sheathe the axe that's coated in goo from the creature, Vorelle lets that one drop and sheathes her left-hand axe. She retrieves her bow and fires a shot at the creature. It's a decent shot, but it does minimal damage.

[Hit AC 21 for 2 points.]

DM Jamie out of order post  4d6(2+5+2+3)=12 d20=8
Wednesday December 29th, 2004 2:38:12 PM

Okay, for those of you directly attacking the creature. You are located at the back of the room. As far as I know this includes Vauhwyt and Mookie and Theodor and Macaw. I know that Deitrich, Olyn, Berlon, and Vorelle are located at various positions throughout the room. Since Rose and Zayne have not posted I am placing them just outside of the kitchen still in the main room.

This is what happens. Everyone has moved ino position and all is looking good. Theodore cast burning hands through the wand at the creature and then all hell breaks loose.

I need everyone in the room to make a reflex save DC 18 for half damage from a fireball. If you fail you take 12 points of damage.

After the smoke clears and everyone picks themselves up off the floor you see the smoldering remain of the creature laying on the ground in front of you. All around you there is scorcing along the walls. The one window in the kitchen has been blown out (window and boards). There are some small fires, but nothing you can not walk up and stamp out with your foot.

Wednesday December 29th, 2004 4:57:05 PM

Berlon gets thrown violently up against a wall as he gets the full effect of the blast (reflex save 17, failed) and he doesn't look too good: his beard is slightly singed and he has a nasty bump on his head. He picks himself up and casts Cure Light Wounds on himself, using his domain spell, healing 10 of the 12 points of damage. He doesn't like healing himself, but after he is done he looks around to see if any of his other Friends need assistance. "It appears I bring my new Friends more harm than good," he mutters with an uncharacteristic frown.

Mookie is absolutely unscathed by the blast, but Vauhwyt takes the brunt of it!

Mookie whirls through the flames and emerges without a burnt feather or a speck of white flour to mar his dark form. "Ha! Exploding undead!" he shouts. "What will they think of next?" (save of 20)

"Ow! Yow!" Vauhwyt cries, with a sound not unlike that of a singed housecat. (save of 13)

But she is made of stern stuff, and keeps her footing. She goes over to the undead creature, wondering if this is the corpse they are supposed to fetch for the boy's cure.

She looks for the magic ring that Theo said it had.

As the smoke and the dust settles everyone pulls themselves up off of the floor. After a few minutes to get your bearings the dizziness is gone. Left , though, are the questions as to what happened.

The creature has crumpled in the corner of the room and is no longer undead. He is now fully dead. His charred reamins still give off a atench, but it is not bad enough for you to become sick over.

There is a cool breeze blowing through the room now becasue of the missing window. Soon the charred smells of the kitchen are gone.

A close inspection of the creature tells you that this is not the same creatuire that left the bite marks on poor Billie. Your thoughts return to him sitting in that temple with his skin slightly grey from infection. Shivering from night sweats while his father stands vigil over him trying to keep the terrible thoughts running through his mind at bay.

And then, just like before there is a barely audible sound on a breeze as gentle as a babies breath. It sounds like the tortured screams of a child... It sounds like it is coming from inside the house...

The explosion rocks Theodore and the wizard falls to the floor in a heap and doesn't move. Macaw, like his brother Mookie, is too swift and avoids the flames completely. But the raven quickly returns to his master lieing on the ground.

Theodore groans weakly, and tries to sit up. His muscles refuse to work and he slumps back to the floor and remains limp. His body is completely covered in burns and his eyebrows have been singed away.

Upon seeing his Friends wounded, Berlon lets out a low growl. He rushes over to Theodore and starts chanting in Gnomish. "Gaengol Drib" He casts Cure Moderate Wounds on Theodore, healing him for 11 points. "Back on your feet, Friend Theodore!" he utters quietly while helping Theodore up.

If we have more than one standard action before our next actions (ooc I don't know how long we will stay in the room. If I can't do more than one spell this post I will redo as the next couple posts.)

Berlon will cast Shield Other and Cure Light Wounds, in that order, on Dietrich. Cure Light is spontaneously cast, replacing Summon Monster I. The ring Dietrich put on glows with a faint green as the Shield Other spell takes effect.

"Deangol Grib" Berlon mutters as he heals 8 hp on Dietrich. "Perhaps Friend Dietrich will be strengthened by my magics. I can now better heal the party, as I may not be always able to get to Dietrich, but I can always heal myself."

Shield Other - Duration 3 hrs. Dietrich gets +1 deflection bonus to AC, +1 resistance bonus to saves, and half hp damage is redirected to Berlon.

Vauhwyt activates a seal, so that everyone in the party can cast Cure Minor Wounds within the next round. She cures herself, and Mookie cures her.

"Hey, everyone!" she says, "use this magic to heal yourselves!"

Then she activates a second seal, one that could have been useful a second ago! Each person in the party gains damage reduction of 2 points vs. fire, which lasts until used.

Finally, Vauhwyt tries to listen for the baby's cries. Listen 16.

[OOC: Use them those clear seals or lose them!]

-- Seal of Curing -- This seal allows any and every character in the party to cast Cure Minor Wounds one time for a duration of one round as a standard action. (This lets anyone stabilize a character who has fallen unconscious in combat.)

-- Seal of Fire Resistance -- Gives all in the group 1d6 fire resistance damage until it runs out.

"Thank you very much master Berlon! And you too Vauhwyt!"

Theodore's aspect was very worrying, but now that the young wizard has been healed, Dietrich says to him:

The ring you pull off of the monster appears to be made of white gold and exquisitely beautiful in its simplicity. There are some markings on the inside of the band.

After everyone is healed up you leave the kitchen and walk back into the main room. You still have two doors to check along the north wall. Both of the doors along the north door are now closed. There are some remains of the explosion in this room. There are cracks running down the walls and anything that would have been hanging on the walls has fallen down. I want a spot check for anyone looking at the main room again

Olyn, after concentrating you find that all of the actual undead auras are gone within your range. You do, however, detect a strong lingering aura in the next room over from the kitchen (door #2).

Vauhwyt, you can barely make out the child screaming and then it goes silent. You think it came from one of the doors, but you can't be sure.

Dietrich, don't hear anything, but it smells like damp soil under the door and there is a faint breeze coming from under the door.

"There is great evil here, Friends," he says as he slings his crossbow, "evil that must be destroyed." His wooden shield on his left hand, he unstoppers a flask of Holy Water and holds it in his other hand.

Theodore puts Vauhwyt's seal to good use and heals the remaining scratches and bruises. He thanks both Berlon and Vauhwyt for their help, and wipes a shaky hand across his brow. He pats the head of his raven to reassure his friend.

The young wizard then takes the ring from the dead undead and speaks of few words of arcane as he concentrates on the trinket.

Dietrich

Dietrich is worried that the undead behind door #2 seems to have disappered. This must mean there is an escape.

Nevertheless, Dietrich suggests to proceed with caution and he wants to know more about the ring. The warrior suspects it has something to do with the group being blasted by the fireball and Dietrich really wants to avoid something similar.

Also, as the undead seemed to have perceived Vorelle in some unnatural way, the fighter suggests not to have the scouts reconoitre the area before the group moves, but to keep everybody together.

So here goes the proposed formation:

Clerics in front, ready to turn the monsters, Dietrich and Vauhwyt just behind, Rose and Theo, then Vorelle and Zayne as rearguard and shooters.

"Friends! Look here, I have discovered something!"

Berlon tries to read the writing on the back of the picture (he knows Common, Gnomish and Elven.) In the unlikely event someone put magical writing on the back of the picture (ooc: seriously, who throws a shoe? btw, Anything on my listen check Jamie?) he has Read Magic prepared, and if he has to cast it, it lasts 30 minutes. He'll only cast it if no one can read the writing.

"Friend Vorelle, my apologies, let me tend to your burns." Berlon spontaneously casts Cure Light Wounds on Vorelle ("Deangol Grib!") healing her for 6 hit points. Cure Light is spontaneously cast in place of Sanctuary,

"Friend Theodore, if you do not yet have it in your spellbook, I can Identify that ring for you tomorrow if you'd like."

Theodore and Macaw
Tuesday January 4th, 2005 6:48:06 PM

"Hmmm..." muses Theodore over the ring. "It appears to be a ring of healing, of some sorts. Of course, I won't know for sure until I can test it further. And there is no sense in fooling with something you are unsure of." He gives a meaningful glance in Vauhwyt's direction, the scroll debacle at Blackbird lake coming to mind. He slips the ring into his belt pouch.

"I also have access to the spell, Berlon," says the mage in response to his gnome friend. "The component to such a spell is costly. Do you have access to that?"

If Berlon has trouble with the message on the back of the painting, Theodore asks if he could take a glance, and studies the writing with shrewd eyes.

(Theodore speaks Common, Draconic, Halfling, and Elven. If these all fail, Theo makes a Decipher Script check, which the PHB says the DM makes. Theo's check is +9)

Vorelle isn't sure she trusts the strange new spellcaster, but he cast his spell before she can do anything to stop him. She feels the wounds begin to heal, and tightens her grip on her bow. With any luck, the healing is the real thing and not some horrific illusion.

To the rest of you the writing seems vaguely familiar, but you can't quite place it.

Vauhwyt gets up to the door and reaches for the knob. Ever so slightly he grips the knob and turns...

The door opens and out pours a dank and dark room. It smells of old moist soils. As the torch light enters and flickers off of the walls you see this is the bathroom. The normal acouterments adorn the walls and there is a soiled rug strewn across the floor.

Rose, when you searched the main room earlier you found a hollow statuary that had been knocked over. Inside of the statuary you found a ruby in the shape of a skull about the size of a half-orcs fist.

Vorelle, you hear breaking glass coming from the kitchen area. Upon closer inspection and the fact that you all now have an exterior spie you know that the explosion earlier has attracted some investigators. Mostly just normal folk, but there are a few guards from a few of the houses present.

I want an arcane knowledge check DC 17 to know what the language is on the back of the painting.

Vauhwyt, when you enter the bathroom the temperature drops. It feels a full 10 degrees colder in here compared to the main room. The smell of moist soil fills your senses. It is as if the smell has permeated the very being of the room. There is a washtub against the back wall and a bookshelf lining the wall to the left. Some of the titles include: Recepies of the Giggleing Ghost, Cooking with Gargul, and Things to do in Dirt City when your dead.Along the right wall is a linen closet.

Everyone congregates in the bathroom around the hole. The hole looks to go about 30 feet down and upon closer inspection you can see the hole widens up after about 5 feet. The torch Olyn threw is sitting at the bottom in what appears to be a larger room, but from this distance you can not tell how big it is.

As Olyn lowers himself down the rope their is an overwhelming sense of dread bearing down upon the group. What will the future bring us? Where does this hole lead? Is their some underground temple waiting for us?

Olyn, as you approach the bottom you can tell that the temperature drops. It is not unpleasent yet, but it is definitely about 10 degrees lower than above. You went down roughly 30 feet and the bottom of the hole opens into a room about 30 foot in diameter. You have to swing to the side a bit to miss your torch, but you are successful.
