Sure Enough, a Cave (ADM Greg) Sunday December 12th, 2004 12:04:54 PM
The party tries to figure out the meaning of the symbol (hint, read the discussion with Caerthon at the Shadfly). A couple of the party move to the edge of the gully, and look over the edge. Partway down this side, in the general direction indicated by the arrow, there is a small copse of healthy-looking willow.
Bralin carefully climbs down [OOC: I presume that he 'took 10' on the climb, no need to roll.] As he arrives at the copse of willows, he notices a small opening into the side of the gully, about halfway up from the bottom. It is only about 3' square, and appears to have been shored up with some type of timber, but has been disguised with grass and branches to be almost out-of-sight.
The party remaining at the top of the gully are becoming wetter and wetter as the force of the storm starts to pick up. Flashes of lightning appear in the eastern sky, and thunder can be heard in the distance.
[OOC: I do not plan to post for Andrath while I am filling in as DM, except for when he has to carry out actions, such as in combat.]
Harvest d20+9=19 d20+9=27 Sunday December 12th, 2004 12:40:08 PM
Harvest Moon keeps watch on the left flank as Bralin Stoneminder climbs over the edge of the gully and down. The noise of the storm should mask any sound.
"You go," she says to the others. "I will keep watch and descend last." Or, perhaps one of the last, she thinks looking across at the ranger.
"I remember," she says into the storm. "Eye with line. Symbol of The Watchful Eye. Used by Paladin Caerthon, Hugo, Langdon. This is a hidden camp."
Harvest crouches in the rain, the crest of her brown hair plastered down over her forehead. When the others are safely down, she descends to join them. (Spot 19, Listen 27)
Elerinn Sunday December 12th, 2004 6:24:37 PM
Elerinn listens to the rain pouring down, absorbing most of the other sounds around. Looking down over the edge of the gully makes the gnome's stomage turn and he is glad he had a small roasted meal this morning instead of one of the Shadfly's impressive diners. Trying not to think of the height, or hidden spiders, Elerinn follows Bralin. He takes his time, for the rocks are slippery with rain.
Taking 10 on the Climb check
Merryn Sunday December 12th, 2004 8:22:04 PM
Wiping his hands on his cloak in order to gain some measure of grip on the slippery rocks, Merryn slowly follows Elerinn down into the gully, eager to get out of the rain (Climb: took 10).
Turning to Bralin, Merryn gestures to his pack and says, "Perhaps some light would be of service to us." Removing his pack, Merryn extricates his everburning torch and carefully unwraps it. As the final layer of wrapping comes free, the entrance to the cave is filled with light. Folding the wrapping and putting it back in his pack, Merryn then shifts the torch to his left hand, still holding his spear in the right, and crouches in the mouth of the cave awaiting the others.
Bralin Sunday December 12th, 2004 9:31:56 PM
Bralin moves back to the party and waves them down, then heads back into the cave.
Once inside, the dwarf carefully explores the enclosed space. [Take 10 - Search 14]
He doesn't answer Merryn. Bralin's dwarven blood provides sufficient illumination.
Arminas d20+8=21 d20+10=14 Monday December 13th, 2004 9:35:42 AM
Arminas nods at Harvest and replies: "I will wait to go last." [spot 21, listen 14]
Watching carefully to see that no enemy has seen them enter the cave, Arminas will carefully descend to the cave. He quietly whispers to Erwen, and then brings her just inside the entrance.
"This is fortunate to have found the healthy willows and cave. Let us always seek health in the land, for is bodes well for us."
Lorth Monday December 13th, 2004 12:45:38 PM
Lorth carefully climbs down to the cave, to many times he has slipped and fallen in such situations. Once near the cave, he enters it after Bralin, but does not go to far in as he can't see until Merryn comes with the light.
A Warm, Dry Place (ADM Greg) Monday December 13th, 2004 9:46:07 PM
Bralin climbs down and moves into the opening. He finds a small tunnel that heads about 6' into the side of the gully, shored up by timbers. Moving down the tunnel, he discovers a small cave, about 20' square and 8' high, carved in the side of the gully. The floor is dirt, and the walls are dirt, as well, shored up with more timbers. There is a faint light shining in from some sort of opening in the roof of the cave, but of course, he doesn't need the light, with his darkvision ability.
He starts to look around the room, but before he can carry out a proper search, other members of the party move in behind him.
There is a fire pit in the center of the room, and there are two large wooden boxes at the rear. Bralin, in his searching, discovers that the boxes contain dry firewood.
Obviously, the party has found one of the hiding places described by Caerthon.
Meanwhile, the storm continues outside, unabated.
Merryn Monday December 13th, 2004 10:37:53 PM
Speaking to no one in particular, Merryn says aloud "Well it seems as though we have arrived at our resting place for the day. I shall prepare a fire for us."
Walking over to the boxes, Merryn retrieves some of the firewood and sets about starting a fire in the firepit with his flint and steel. Once it is lit and burning properly, Merryn says once again to the group "Now if you'll excuse me, I must adjourn for awhile to meditate."
With the fire lit, Merryn re-wraps his magic torch, places it back in his pack, and heads to a corner of the room to meditate. At the end of his meditation he consumes some of his trail rations, thinking the weather too poor to have any luck foraging.
Harvest Monday December 13th, 2004 10:51:12 PM
Wet again for the second time today. Harvest Moon looks about the cave in the light of the druid's torch.
"I will return shortly," she says and exits. Once more in the pelting rain, she examines the mouth of the cave careful to note whether the light from within can be detected without. Climbing back up, the little monk explores the area where the faint light in the roof of the cave should be. Only then does she return.
In the mouth of the tunnel, Harvest shakes the water from her hair and attempts to squeeze as much of the rain from her robe before entering the dry cave interior. Once safely within, she relates her findings.
Peering out the small tunnel once again she comments, "It is nice to be dry," she says to no one in particular. The little monk removes a wooden rod from her haversack and, with a word, activates a spell. She begins passing the flats of her hands across the material of her robe.
[ OoC: I wonder if you'll let Prestidigitation dry clothes as well as clean them, Greg? ]
Lorth Tuesday December 14th, 2004 7:30:24 AM
Lorth watches Bralin to make sure he doesn't need any help and when he notices Bralin has everything well in hand he helps Merryn make the fire. He then finds a comfortable spot and strips off and lays out all his wet gear. He then cleans and polishes it, to ward off rust and decay. After doing that he packs everything, methodically, back into its place.
Arminas and Erwen [spot 18, listen 11] d20+6=18 d20+6=11 Tuesday December 14th, 2004 10:14:39 AM
Upon entering the cave, Arminas finds a suitable spot for Erwen just within the cave entrance. Arminas reaches out and touches the beak of the eagle, and then closes his fist. Erwen ruffles her feathers, shaking off the water and then sits staring out the cave entrance. [guard command]
"If anyone approaches the entrance, Erwen will let us know. She is set to guard for awhile."
Arminas settles down near the fire and removes his wet cloak. He wrings out what moisture he can, then spreads it before the fire. He takes a cloth from his sack, and carefully dries his bow, unstringing it to allow it to dry properly. He then takes out a small container of oil and applies it carefully. Once that is done, he pays the same careful attention to his sword.
Elerinn Tuesday December 14th, 2004 2:48:34 PM
Elerinn is able to see pretty well with his gnomish eyes, coupled with the presence of Merryn's fire. He curiously looks at Merryn's meditative ritual, but decides to ask him about it later. Like his companions, the gnome sits next to the warm fire and dries his clothes and red hair, that gains an even curlier look to it. Qamaro, the raven that accompanies Elerinn everywhere, starts cleaning and drying his shining black feathers with his long beak. Listering to the rain outside next to the warm fire gives Elerinn a comfortable, relaxed feeling. It makes him think of home.
Bralin (Sustenance) Tuesday December 14th, 2004 3:05:32 PM
After satisfying himself that there are no other passages out of the cave, Bralin settles down to wait out the rain and the night.
He skips dinner, finding he is still not hungry. Instead he pulls out his stoneworking kit and a small statuette and begins carefully working the details of the statue.
With luck, he may finish tonight.
Snug as a Bug in a Rug (ADM Greg) Tuesday December 14th, 2004 11:31:50 PM
Party members strip down, clean and dry their gear, and dry themselves in front of the warm fire. Harvest Moon climbs outside, and looks carefully for signs of the useage of the cave. She can tell that the wind and rain block any sight from farther than a few feet from the entrance, or the smoke-hole, and that the wind is quickly whipping away any traces of smoke scent. She climbs back in and cleans and dries her clothing. [OOC: Sure, Al, why not?]
Warm trail rations and water are the fare for the evening meal, and then it is time for bed, as tomorrow looks to be another cold, wet day. Examining the map, the party figures that most of one more day's travel will get them to the Crimson Fort.
[OOC: Please post watches for the night.]
Harvest Tuesday December 14th, 2004 11:57:55 PM
Harvest Moon's mouth remembers the taste of trail rations as feet retain the feel for an old pair of boots. Though comforting in familiarity, old and worn, they may not, however, in fact, be comfortable. And the same seems true for trail rations. After the pies of the Shadfly Inn, trail rations seem ever so dreary.
Harvest eyes her haversack and once again contemplates using the wand. It could flavor food for the entire group. It is, however, humility that causes her to refrain. She does not know these people well, and such an act may be too ostentatious at this point. She eats her trail rations, chewing each carefully to ensure the proper devotion to the food.
"I will stand the first watch again," she says, placing herself near the short tunnel in such a way that she may also see near the entirety of the cave as well. "Unless there are objections," she adds.
Lorth Wednesday December 15th, 2004 7:46:36 AM
Lorth stands whatever watch he usually does, then tries to get some sleep when he is able.
Bralin (Sustenance, Insight) d20+12=23 Wednesday December 15th, 2004 8:39:36 AM
Bralin stays up all but the last few hours of the early morning, when Lorth is on watch. During the second watch, he keeps his attention on the cave mouth and the sounds outside.
But for the rest of the night, when others are also awake, he works his stone. The "tink, tink" of metal on stone is all that can be heard of the dwarf from the back the cave. [Craft check 23 vs DC 18 (voluntary) = 414. Divide by 2 for 4 hours work = 207 cp completed. Total now 1332 of 1500 complete]
Prior to going to sleep, he activates another seal. Tomorrow will be a hard day. [Seal of Blessed Sleep: Use when going to sleep to have a +1 insight on all skill actions and saving throws for the next day.]
Merryn d20+6=12 d20+8=21 Wednesday December 15th, 2004 9:06:06 AM
Returning from his meditation, Merryn volunteers for any watch but the first. It appears that Harvest has it under control and he is sorely in need of some sleep and the sooner the better.
Eyeing the work of the dwarf, Merryn says to him casually, "That is some beautiful carving work you've done there. There was a time when I could have wrought the same image with skills close to yours in wood, but it has been a long time since I have last held a chisel."
With that, Merryn retires to one of the cave walls for a few hours rest, rousing when called for his watch. He keeps his watch attentively, as he has no desire to bring down an undetected intruder on the party. (Spot: 12; Listen: 21)
Arminas [spot 28 nat. 20, listen 29] Erwen [spot 19, listen 21] d20+8=28 d20+10=29 d20+6=19 d20+6=21 Wednesday December 15th, 2004 10:37:26 AM
Arminas turns toward Andrath, who has been strangly silent. "Andrath, last night we set watch with Harvest Moon, Lorth and Alkali at first watch. Andrath and myself can take middle watch, and Bralin, Merryn and Elerinn can take last watch. I believe that is what worked before."
Erwen will stay by the entrance, and will sleep when I am sleeping and stand watch with me.
Elerinn Wednesday December 15th, 2004 1:32:27 PM
Elerinn nods when Arminas suggests him to take the last watch. As soon as Bralin starts to work on his stone, the soft ticking sounds puts Elerinn in a relaxed state and he falls asleep pretty soon.
The Rain in Spain Falls Mainly... (ADM Greg) Thursday December 16th, 2004 12:14:46 AM
The first two watches pass uneventfully, as the watchers use the firewood to keep the cave comfortable. Dreams are generally calm, even though the storm continues to rage outside the cave.
Lorth has an especially vivid dream of combat against an unrecognizable foe, feeling a sense of victory and defeat, both at the same time.
During the last watch, in the false dawn before the sun rises, Bralin, Elerinn and Merryn hear a loud crash off in the distance. Then they can hear a thundering roar approaching the cave, as if all of the antelope on the plains decided to run past the cave at once. Looking out the cave door, Bralin, with his darksight, can see that the gully has started to fill with rushing brown water. The water is flowing much faster than the small stream that was present at bedtime, and the torrent carries large detritus, including tree trunks. The water already appears to be about 10' deep, and will likely reach the cave entrance in about 30 seconds, if it keeps rising at the present rate.
Wind and rain continue to lash at the entrance to the cave.
Merryn d20=8 Thursday December 16th, 2004 10:56:04 AM
"Hurry, Elerinn, Bralin, we must rouse the others before we are taken under by this deluge."
Running to Andrath and Harvest, he shakes them awake and tells them of what is happening outside.
"We ought to climb out of this cave as fast as possible, lest we be drowned."
Gathering his things, Merryn makes sure the others are in the process of doing the same and then heads to the entrance of the cave, which, by now is soaking wet. He attempts to climb to the edge of the gully again (Climb: 8) and, if successful, will give others a hand-up.
Harvest d20+5=11 d20+1=17 Thursday December 16th, 2004 11:48:04 AM
The little monk's brown eyes spring open at the druid's call of alarm and she rolls quickly to her feet. Ready, as ever to move at a moment's notice, she snatches up her haversack and takes in the situation. What she sees fills her with concern.
"Merryn Blackbridge!" she calls after the druid as he moves to the tunnel. "Before you climb ... " Harvest draws the rope from her haversack and ties a firm knot about his waist.
"If you make it up, run around one of those willows twice and then retie the rope." (Rope Use 11)
As the druid makes his way out, and hopefully upward, Harvest anchors the rope and watches his progress, calling out advice and warning to aide his progress. (Climb Aid Another 17 - Gives +2 to Merryn's skill check.)
Bralin (Sustenance, Insight) d20=15 d20+4=9 Thursday December 16th, 2004 4:12:33 PM
"RISE! WE MUST FLEE!" Bralin bellows as he re-enters the cave.
Seeing that Merryn is making to climb out, the dwarf moves to help Andrath do the same. He hands the rogue a rope, and holds on lest the man fall into the river.
"Can ye climb?" he asks Andrath. If the answer is no, Bralin will reverse roles, tie the rope around his waist [Use Rope 16] and start climbing [Climb 9].
Arminas (climb 22) d20+4=22 Thursday December 16th, 2004 5:38:52 PM
Arminas awakes with a start, he gives a yell and Erwen launches herself out the opening of the cave, beating her wings against the wind and rain she rises out of sight.
Grabbing his haversack, he runs to the cave exit.
IF the water is not rushing into the cave, he climbs out and up to the top of the gully.
IF it is too late, and the torrent is pouring into the cave, Arminas will climb towards the smoke hole. Either he will climb out or hopefully climb high enough to be above the water.
Andrath Thursday December 16th, 2004 11:18:33 PM
Wakened from a sound sleep by the druid's shaking and the dwarf's yelling, Andrath quickly figures out what is going on. He throws his gear into his pack, puts on his belt and throws his pack, bow and quiver over his shoulders. He heads for the entrance to the cave, just in time to see poor Merryn slip from the bank and head towards the water. Luckily, Harvest had managed to tie a rope around the druid's waist, and Andrath grabs onto the rope to help hold Merryn. He looks over his shoulder to see Arminas scramble up the slope to the top, in the pouring rain.
In answer to Bralin's question, Andrath calls out, "I can climb very well, but can you climb? How about you come and help pull poor Merryn up, while I take your rope up to the top of the bank, so that you and the others can use it?"
The Water is Rising (ADM Greg) Thursday December 16th, 2004 11:28:47 PM
[OOC: Climbing up the slope to the top is a DC10 climbing check, and no 'taking 10' is allowed, due to the urgency of the situation. If the PC can hold onto a rope while climbing, the DC drops to 5.
If the PC misses the climb check, make a reflex save vs. DC 17 to grab onto one of the willows, and then retry the climb check. If the PC misses this reflex save, he/she falls into the raging new river.]
The water continues to rise, and is only about 2' below the mouth of the cave.
Arminas successfully scrambles out the mouth of the cave, and up to the top of the bank.
Merryn starts to climb, but waits while Harvest quickly ties a rope around his waist. Lucky for him, this rope, since he slips as he heads for the top, and grabs for the willows to stop his fall. [OOC: Make the reflex save or have a dunking.]
Andrath grabs the rope beside Harvest Moon, holding onto Merryn if necessary. Bralin holds his own rope, and needs to decide if he will climb up the bank, help Harvest Moon, or continue to hold his rope and wait for Andrath to climb up first.
Arminas, at the top of the bank, is looking across a very dark, very wet, very grey landscape. The occasional lightning flash reveals that the ground has turned to mud, and there are open water puddles scattered across the field of view.
Lorth Friday December 17th, 2004 7:32:58 AM
Lorth grabs his pack and heads for the door. He will wait to climb up the slope until everyone else has gone.
Bralin (sustenance, insight) d20+5=23 Friday December 17th, 2004 8:12:22 AM
Bralin hands his rope to Andrath. "Go up and secure it. I will follow."
Seeing Merryn fall, he grabs the other end of the rope that Harvest is holding, and tries to pull the man back to the bank. [Strength check 23]
"Climb," he orders Harvest. The more people heading up the embankment, the better.
Harvest d20+1=10 Friday December 17th, 2004 8:32:42 AM
Into the pelting rain and singing wind, Harvest Moon nods to Bralin Stoneminder's command.
Grasping a stony outcropping and then digging a foot into a deposit of loose scree, she turns her face toward the top of the gully and the elven ranger who she can only hope succeeded in his climb.
"Arminas of Jarlswolf," she calls out into the storm, "please lower a rope. Secure a rope, and lower it."
And then she begins her climb. The earth, softened by the rain, causes her feet to send cascades of rock and mud down into the torrent below; a precursor to her own fate should she slip. But Harvest Moon channels the whole of her focus into the climb, ever moving, never leaving her weight upon one precarious hold for very long.
And, at last, she pulls her self over the lip of the gully and rolls to safety.
Merryn d20+3=8 d20=12 d20+2=18 Friday December 17th, 2004 9:18:58 AM
Bah! Curse my ineptitude, Merryn thinks to himself as his hands meet nothing but air while he plummets towards the raging torrent (Ref. save: 8). Feeling the rope around his waist jerk violently taught, he thanks the gods that Harvest had the foresight to do so.
Calling out over the water to Bralin, Merryn yells "Thank you Bralin, I will try to swim towards you to make holding the rope less difficult!" With that, Merryn swims as well as he can (Swim: 12 (OOC: I'm not sure if this can serve to give Bralin +2 on his strength check, but that was what I was trying to achieve)) towards the dwarf at the edge of the water.
Provided he makes it out safely, Merryn will thank Bralin heartily. No sense in risking it again, Merryn thinks, and so he tells Bralin to go on ahead of him and casts Bull's Strength on himself while he waits (+4 to Str. (Str. 11+4=15)). Feeling new strength flow into his arms, Merryn grabs one of the secured ropes and scrambles up to the top of the gully (Climb: 18).
Elerinn d20-2=0 Friday December 17th, 2004 9:31:52 AM
Elerinn is surprised by the tremendous force the water is quickly filling the cave. He knows that he must climb out of here as soon as possible, for his small size will make him an easy victim of the cold rapids. He looks at Harvest climbing out of the cave and waits until she is savely out of the pit. Noticing that Lorth is waiting for the rest to climb, Elerinn tries to climb up as soon as Harvest drops the rope down again. He isn't succesfull however and he falls down on the muddy ground.
Climb: 0 OOC: I didn't know if Elerinn could climb after Harvest in this round, otherwise he will wait until the next.
Arminas d20+6=10 d20+2=12 Friday December 17th, 2004 10:10:27 AM
As Arminas makes it to the top of the gully, he looks back, surprised that others did not make it as quickly. He pulls his silk rope from his pack and ties it to a healthy willow and tosses an end back down to the cave entrance. (use rope 10).
"Grab the rope, pull yourself up."
Although Arminas has every reason to believe his knot will hold tight, he grabs the rope to help pull others up. (strength check 12)
Erwen flys in small circles above the group.
Andrath d20+9=10 d20+9=14 Sunday December 19th, 2004 10:00:51 PM
Andrath starts to climb the slope, sure that he can scamper up the simple slope, holding the rope. However, he feels his feet start to slip out from under him. [OOC: Rolled a natural 1 for the climb.] He reaches inside himself for extra energy, and finds his footing, successfully reaching the top with a second try [OOC: Used a hero point for a reroll, with a climb success of 14.]
He calls down to Bralin, "I can hold the rope up here, you hold it down there, and send the rest up. Then you climb up, and we can pull you!"
So Near, and Yet... (ADM Greg) Sunday December 19th, 2004 11:44:51 PM
[OOC: Please note, even though you are not technically in combat, I am keeping track of your actions round by round. If you try to do too much at once, I will post how much you are able to accomplish.]
Lorth waits behind Bralin in the cave mouth, planning to climb last of all.
Bralin hands his rope to Andrath, and takes the other rope from Harvest Moon, calling for the monk to get up the slope and away from the rising flood. He sets himself and starts to pull on Merryn, trying to drag him against the current and back the cave mouth.
Harvest Moon scrambles up the slope, and pulls herself to safety.
Merryn, with Bralin pulling on the rope, manages to pull up to the bank, and pull himself out of the water. [OOC: Next post, he can cast bull's strength, and try to climb up the slope.]
Having no rope to climb with yet [OOC: Harvest had no rope], Elerinn tries to climb up the slope, but quickly slips, and falls towards the rising water. [OOC: Reflex save vs. DC17, or fall in the water, with no rope attached.]
Arminas takes his backpack off his back, and retrieves his silk rope. [OOC: Next post, he can tie it to a bush, and lower it down.]
Andrath climbs to the top of the slope, after a false start, and braces himself for the next climber, dangling the rope down to the cave opening.
The floodwater continues to rise, and is lapping at the base of the cave opening. Another few rounds, and the cave will flood. The darkness and lashing rain make it difficult to see farther than a few feet, except when the entire struggle against the floodwaters is lit up by the lighting flashes.
Merryn d20+2=10 d20+2=3 Monday December 20th, 2004 12:04:21 AM
Merryn thanks the gods and Harvest and Bralin both that his feet have found solid ground again.
In order to clear the way for others, Merryn decides it would be best if he could get up to the top to help secure another line for the climbers. Merryn casts Bull's Strength on himself so that he might avoid falling again. With new power coursing through his arms, Merryn grabs onto Andrath's rope and scales the wall (Climb: 10).
Once at the top, he will help Andrath with the line, providing whatever meager assistance he may (Str. check: 3. nat. 1).
Harvest d20+5=13 d20+7=21 Monday December 20th, 2004 8:03:01 AM
Harvest Moon scrambles to the edge and looks back down at the surging torrent. Her friends race desperately to beat the rise of the dark water.
"Bralin! Lorth! Tie yourselves in, please!" she shouts into the wind. "Alkali Greenbottle! Climb the rope attached to Merryn Blackbridge!"
"Elerinn Brazael!" she shouts as the gnome slips on the treacherous cliff face. "Arminas of Jarlswolf! Elerinn, throw your rope to Elerinn! I will try to secure him."
Harvest draws a scroll from her haversack, and in the driving rain reads the spell. With absolute faith, she trusts the rope to be there, pointing to where she expects it to be, Harvest gives the command. "Loop and knot!" (Cast Animate Rope.)
Rolls Concentration 13 Rope Use 21 (If necessary. +2 from spell.)
OoC: In order for this to work Arminas, you have to make a ranged touch attack to get the rope close enough to Elerinn. Only then can the rope animate and loop around him.
Four down four up three ropes hanging from the cliff. (I assume Harvest's rope is still tied around Merryn's waist and he's up.)
Lorth Monday December 20th, 2004 10:57:54 AM
Lorth attemps to help Elerinn as he falls. He either grabs him or throws his body in Elerinn's path to stop him from tumbling down the slope. Only after Elerinn is righted will Lorth stop to tie himself in.
Arminas d20+6=18 d20+8=10 Monday December 20th, 2004 11:15:10 AM
Arminas takes his silk rope, and quickly anchors it to a healthy willow. (use rope 18).
Looking for Elerinn in the driving rain, he sees him slipping towards the torrent. Grabbing the coiled rope, he throws it toward Elerinn. (ranged attack 10).
Seeing the rope caught up by the wind, Arminas is not sure if it will reach Elerinn.
As the rope flys through the air, Arminas makes on last desperate attempt. Pointing at Elerinn, Arminas gives a loud whistle and points at Elerinn. (Fetch command for Erwen).
Bralin Monday December 20th, 2004 8:49:04 PM
Bralin looks about at Harvest's call, but sees nothing to tie himself in with. He can only wait for Merryn to clear the rope before he himself can climb.
In the meantime, he can only wait and watch.
Elerinn d20+5=21 Tuesday December 21st, 2004 6:10:06 AM
Elerinn grabs the slope with his tiny hands, and luckily he is able to avoid falling into the water. (Reflex: 21) When he sees Arminas throw the rope at him, he tries to catch it. The rope doesn't get close enough though, and the gnome is beginning to wonder if he will die a not so glorious dead inside this flooded, cold cave. Through the chaos that is the heavy rain, he can see Arminas pointing his finger at him. This gives him a bit of hope, and he calls out: "Throw the rope at me again, quick!"
Andrath d20+4=14 Tuesday December 21st, 2004 8:01:52 AM
Andrath smiles as Merryn scrambles up the rope, and over the side. He braces himself for the next climber to show. [OOC: Strength check of 14.]
Getting Wetter by the Second (ADM Greg) d20=19 Tuesday December 21st, 2004 8:09:22 AM
Merryn casts his spell, feeling the increased strength course through his arms and shoulders. He grabs the rope, and quickly scampers to the top. However, the dunking in the cold water has numbed his hands, and he can't get a good grip on the rope to help Andrath.
Harvest Moon issues instructions to the party, and slings her backpack off her back, then retrieves her scroll. [OOC: She can cast her spell next post.]
Lorth sees Elerinn manage to catch himself on one of the willows, and holds up from throwing himself at the gnome. He grabs the rope being held by Andrath, and starts to climb the slope. [OOC: You need to make a climb check against DC5 with the rope as an aid. Also, you probably weren't sleeping in your armour, so it is likely that you have thrown it in your backpack, so don't take the armour check penalty.]
Arminas throws the rope towards the struggling gnome, but not quite near enough. He gathers the rope back up for another throw. As he does so, he commands his eagle to "fetch" the little magician.
The eagle figures out what the ranger wants him to fetch [OOC: Int check of 19], and flies down to try to grab the gnome. Unfortunately, the gnome is too heavy for the eagle to lift, and the bird's deep claws dig into Elerinn's shoulders, starting to pull him away from the grip on the willows.
Elerinn clings to the willow, wondering why he is suddenly being attacked by the ranger's eagle.
Bralin waits with stoic dwarfishness for his turn on the rope.
Andrath braces himself for the next climber.
The water continues to rise, and is now at Elerinn's waist, clinging to a willow just outside the opening to the cave. The water has started to flood the cave, and has reached Bralin's and Lorth's knees.
[OOC: Here are the ropes as I understand it. Arminas has one rope tied to a willow, and is trying to throw it to Elerinn. Andrath is holding a rope that is dangling down by the cave mouth, open for one person to climb.]
Harvest - OoC Tuesday December 21st, 2004 8:24:46 AM
What about Harvest's rope? Last check it was still tied around Merryn's waist.
Lorth d20+1=21 d20+1=10 Tuesday December 21st, 2004 8:49:26 AM
Lorth hardly notices the water around his knees but keeps his eye on Elerinn. He then quickly ties himself into Andrath's rope (Rope use: 21) and proceeds to make his way over to where Elerinn is struggling, either by swinging or climbing or both. (Climb check: 10)
(When/if he reaches Elerinn he tells him to grab around his shoulders, then tries to climb up. I realize I may not be able to do all this, this round.)
Arminas d20+8=26 Tuesday December 21st, 2004 10:18:40 AM
Arminas noticing that Elerinn has got a hold of a willow, gives 2 short whistles and waves his hand. Erwen, lets go of Elerinn and flys into the sky, circling the group.
Having rescued Elerinn from the grasp of an eagle, Arminas tries once again to throw him the rope. (ranged touch 26) This time, the coil of rope sails through the air, cutting through the driving wind and rain. The rope uncoils as it flys, with the end landing across the sprawled out gnome.
"Grab the rope Elerinn and climb, it is anchored well."
Merryn d20+2=19 d20+2=4 Tuesday December 21st, 2004 10:58:01 AM
(OOC: I'm assuming Harvest's rope is still tied around my waist at this point).
Following Arminas' example, Merryn calls out to those waiting below, "Hold for a moment, I will anchor the rope so you might use it!"
Heading over to the willow, Merryn loops his rope around it as well and ties a strong knot in it (Use Rope: 19). He quickly runs to the edge of the gully and yells down, "The rope is anchored!"
Blowing on his fingers, Merryn decides that he should brace the rope with his own hands as well (Str. Check: 4; 2 if bull's strength has expired). His hands still feel cold as ice, but he grasps the rope as best as he can regardless.
Bralin d20+4=21 Tuesday December 21st, 2004 4:05:27 PM
Bralin grabs the rope thrown by Merryn, and ascends.
[Climb 21]
Harvest d20+9=26 d20+9=13 Tuesday December 21st, 2004 4:38:15 PM
Harvest Moon breathes a sigh of relief when the Elerinn regains his balance avoiding a plunge into the waters below. The ranger scores with a well placed toss, and Harvest stands ready to cast her spell should that not appear enough to allow Elerinn to make his way to safety.
"Alkali Greenbottle," she shouts, "are you there?" The halfling would most likely stand no more chance against the raging waters than Elerinn. That he has not responded is worrying.
Perhaps it is a reflection of this worry. Perhaps it is her position on the lip of the gully, exposed to the broad angry pelting sky and so close to the roiling waters. Perhaps it is the feeling of vulnerability that this brings, but regardless of the reason, it causes Harvest to look about. (Spot 26, Listen 13)
Just above the sound of the storm she calls across to Arminas. "Could you ask your eagle friend to watch our backs, please," Harvest requests ill at ease.
OoC: Ready Action to Cast Animate Rope (Loop and Knot) around Elerinn should it become necessary.
Elerinn d20-2=3 d20+5=15 Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 2:44:01 AM
The first thing Elerinn feels after barely being able to avoid falling into the cold water, are two sharp claws in his back. His first impulse is to punch whatever is behind him, but he realizes he need both hands to hold the willows that rescued him from the cold waters below. After two whistles, the painfull feeling dissapears and the gnome wonders what in the Wold it was. He starts to climb the secured rope again, but falls again.

Andrath Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 9:50:30 AM
Andrath feels Lorth's impressive weight as the paladin grabs the rope. Setting himself for the tension, the elf is surprised when the rope starts to move across the slope, as Lorth moves to reach for Elerinn.
Alkali (ADM Greg post) d20+2=20 Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 10:08:44 AM
Alkali follows Bralin out of the cave mouth, the water up to his chest, and climbs the slope to the top. [OOC: Climb check of 20.]
Only Two Remain (ADM Greg) Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 10:15:34 AM
[OOC: I expect to be able to most throught the holidays. I understand that one of you will not be available, but Al will pick him up. What about the rest of you?]
Lorth grabs the rope held by Andrath, and climbs along the slope, trying to reach the now-falling gnome.
Arminas calls off his eagle, and makes a perfect throw with his rope. The rope falls cleanly across Elerinn's shoulders and back.
Harvest Moon sees the gnome start to lose his grip, but also sees the rope from Arminas is in good contact with the gnome. So, she reads the scroll, and watches in satisfaction as the rope winds its way tightly around Elerinn's body, halting his fall into the continually-rising water.
Merryn manages to get his fingers to work as he ties his rope around a willow, but then his cold hands fail him again, as he fails to get a good grip on the wet rope.
Bralin wades out of the cave mouth, and climbs Merryn's now-fastened rope to the top of the bank.
Andrath continues to brace himself with the rope.
Alkali clambers up over the edge of the slope, dripping wet from the almost-dunking.
By now, everyone is atop the slope, except for Elerinn with the magical rope attached, and Lorth tied to Andrath's rope. The floodwater has now reached the gnome's neck, and is pulling hard at him, threatening to carry him away. Lorth is submerged to his waist, and can feel the water continue to climb.
Atop the slope, the successful climbers are continually lashed by the wind and rain, and realize that they need to get off of the slope-top and down into the gullies for some sort of cover, quickly.
Lorth d20+1=17 Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 10:29:47 AM
Lorth continues to swing and climb his way over to Elerinn, hoping that his friends can keep the rope stable with the extra weight he is putting on it. Since Lorth is tied into the rope when he reaches Elerinn he attempts to grab him and yells, "Pull us up."
Merryn d20+2=9 d20+6=11 d20+8=11 Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 11:41:15 AM
Gesturing to his numb fingers and indicating the anchored rope, Merryn yells to the group that he will go off a bit to try to find some shelter for them from the weather and return with his findings (Search: 9).
Failing success at that, he keeps his eyes and ears open for anything out of the ordinary that might hint at a location for shelter or danger for the group (Spot: 11, Listen: 11).
(OOC: I'll be able to post throughout the holidays, perhaps missing one day, but that is unlikely. :) )
Arminas d20+2=6 Wednesday December 22nd, 2004 11:57:30 AM
Arminas, seeing the rope twist around and secure the rope, starts to pull Elerinn up. (strength check 6).

With a last quick look around, Harvest answers the call of ranger Arminas. (Spot 24 for anything/one approaching from out of the storm.)
Taking a position on the rope behind the ranger, Harvest rolls her arm in a quick circular motion, wrapping the rope around her forearm and gripping it in her fist. Heels dug into the ground, the little monk backs away from the cliff's edge. (STR check 18)
As she pulls, Harvest listens into the whistling wind behind lest the group be caught unaware while they pull themselves from the jaws of the tempestuous flood. (Listen 29 nat 20)

The gnome is safe.
Bralin pulls on the rope supporting Lorth.

Alkali (ADM Greg post) Thursday December 23rd, 2004 2:47:34 PM
Alkali sits down heavily, holding onto her ankle. "I think that I have twisted it. I won't be able to go on; I will only slow you down. I'll find a quiet spot to wait out the storm, and heal the ankle. Then I will replenish the cave with wood, and make my own way back to Magpie Crossing. I will meet you back there. Be safe and good luck.

Elerinn Thursday December 23rd, 2004 2:51:08 PM
Elerinn panicks as the waters reaches his thin neck, and he holds up his head in an attempt to keep the water away from his mouth and nose as long as possible. At the moment the sorcerer starts to wonder if Wardd has finally turned his gaze away from him on this very day, he feels that someone is pulling him up. He relaxes somewhat and trusts on the person pulling him to savety.

Safe from the Flood, at Last (ADM Greg) d6=3 d12=10 d12=3 d12=9 Thursday December 23rd, 2004 3:12:28 PM
The last two party members (Elerinn and Lorth) are unceremoniously hauled over the edge of the gully. [OOC: You are now out of combat time.]
Merryn has found a small gully that generally leads in the direction of the Crimson Fort, with only a small trickle of water flowing down the center. The gully has an overhang that will shield the group as they take stock of their gear. As near as the party can tell, it is about an hour until daylight.
Merryn finds that his sling was lost in floodwater. Three of Elerinn's scrolls were ruined by the dunking: Identify, Shocking Grasp, and Rope Trick. Other than that, the party seems to be in fairly good shape.
Andrath Thursday December 23rd, 2004 3:13:36 PM
Andrath crawls back under the overhang, and pulls out his spellbook, taking off the waterproof wrapping. He reads his spells for the day, committing them to memory.
Harvest Thursday December 23rd, 2004 5:36:17 PM
Beneath the protective overhang, Harvest Moon squeezes as much water from her rope as possible before stowing it in her haversack. It had been a good place to rest during the storm. Something must have given way at some point up the gully. Fortunate that it had not broken earlier. It was pleasant to have a full night's rest.
Kneeling apart from the others, she takes out the roughly carved eye and spends some time in meditation.
"Perhaps we should have one travel the lip of the gully as we travel," Harvest suggests as the group prepares to move out.

Bralin Thursday December 23rd, 2004 8:03:01 PM
Like Harvest, Bralin needs a moment.
He pulls out his sphere, instantly feeling himself back in The Chamber.
Once he's taken his spells [Standard set], he climbs up and takes the front of the main group (letting Merryn scout ahead, just like yesterday).

Merryn Thursday December 23rd, 2004 10:17:08 PM
Well, better a sling than my life, Merryn thinks to himself. Heading towards Harvest Moon, he extends his hand in friendship and says, "Thank you for having the foresight to tie that rope around me. Without it, I might have lost more than just a sling." He offers a slight smile that vanishes quickly as he remembers how he, foolishy, nearly perished having accomplished nothing in his quest.
Leaving Harvest to her own preparations, Merryn rings out his wet clothes and follows suit with the others, meditating to regain his command of nature.

Upon rising from his meditation, Merryn heads over to Elerinn and gives him a hearty clap on the back and says to him, "I thought we might have lost you there for a moment. I'm glad we all made it out safe." With that, he resumes his place in the marching order from yesterday and hopes for a more peaceful evening tonight.
Arminas Friday December 24th, 2004 12:53:58 AM
Arminas unties his rope and stores it when they get to the overhang.
"Elerinn, I'm sorry that you thought you were being attacked by Erwen. I thought we were going to lose you in the flood, so as a last resort I had Erwen attempt to 'fetch' you. Luckily you grabbed hold of that bush, and didn't need his help."
Arminas then takes care to find a dry spot, Erwen sits by him and Arminas studies his spell.
Elerinn Friday December 24th, 2004 8:55:17 AM
Elerinn needs a moment to recover once Harvest has savely pulled him over the edge of the gully. The cold rain makes him tremble and the adrenalin in his blood isn't helping either. When Merryn finds a place to shelter, the gnome's mind has calmed down somewhat and he is able to move to the save gully.
The first thing he does when he doesn't feel any rain pouring onto his mud-covered hair, is thank Harvest. He grabs her hand with both his own hands and says: "I thank you, Miss Moon. If it wasn't for you, I would be sleeping with the fishes at this very moment." He smiles at Merryn when he claps his back and waves Arminas' apologies away. "You did what you could, there's nothing wrong with that." And with an impish smile, he adds: "At least now I know whose claws were in my back while I was hanging there. Poor Arwen, I'm light, but not that light!"
When the sorcerer examines his backpack and notices the three spoiled scrolls, he throws them away, apparently cursing in the gnomish language. In the Common language, he adds: "Well, at least I'm still alive..." While some of his companions need to study their spells, Elerinn has some time to recover from the event.
Harvest Friday December 24th, 2004 11:04:16 AM
Harvest Moon blushes. Twice. He mumbles something low and barely audible about only-wanting- to-help, glad-they-are-alright, and such. The soggy crest of brown hair still bobs a bit as she ducks her head to both Merryn and Elerinn, and then she backs away to attend her morning rituals.
Entering the Dead Zone (ADM Greg) Sunday December 26th, 2004 8:10:31 PM
[OOC: Another good example of teamwork. Good job, all.]
The party members spend an hour or so before the dawn, gathering themselves, collecting their gear, and readying their spells for the day.
Once the day lightens up (but only by a little bit), the adventurers head out once again, with Merryn in front. However, he can only range about 20'-30' ahead, because visibility is very reduced in the still-raging storm.
The little shelter, and its warmth, is quickly forgotten as the party plods along directly into the teeth of the wind and rain. After walking for hours (exactly how many, it is difficult to tell), Merryn and Arminas notice that even the warped shrubs and grasses are no longer present. The ground is sticky grey-brown clay, that adds 3 pounds to each foot, making each step a little more tiring than the last. Merryn can no longer feel her strong connection to nature, as if nothing living can be found nearby.
Somewhere in the past few minutes, the party has crossed the line into the Dead Zone.
Continuing east for another couple of hours, the party comes upon another of the deep gullies, crossing their path. Most of the bottom of the gully is full of water, but it only appears to be at most, about 1' deep. The flow is fast and steady.
[OOC: On Bob's first map, I figure that you crossed into the Dead Zone at the capital letter "D" in the horizontal word "Dead", just above the blue-dashed gully running almost due east-west. If you head north-east from there, directly towards the fort, you will hit the big gully that runs almost due north-south. If this isn't clear, let me know, and I can send you a version of Bob's map that includes the line of travel. However, it is about a 5 meg file, so I am hesitating to send it out, since some of you may be on slower phone lines. OK? Greg]

P.S. Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays.
Merryn d20+6=11 d20+8=28 Sunday December 26th, 2004 8:51:37 PM
"Well, it seems as though we must get our feet wet, so to speak," Merryn calls out to the group.
Although the water is only a foot deep, Merryn remembers the sudden onrush of water from this morning and so he says to the group:
"If no one objects, I suggest we repeat our performance from this morning. Whoever is to go across the water first, let that person have a rope tied around them held by the others in case they slip. Once safe on the other side, he or she will secure the rope so that the others may cross the water safely. Who knows if this gully won't suddenly fill up like the other one and so the rope would definitely be a good idea. I volunteer myself to go across first, but should another wish to go, I am not opposed."
His speech finished, Merryn waits expectantly, keeping his eyes and ears open for anything suggesting a sudden onrush of water (Spot: 11; Listen: 28 nat. 20).
Harvest d20+9=22 d20+9=19 Monday December 27th, 2004 11:09:44 AM
Harvest nods at Merryn's suggestion.
"Maybe we should have someone with greater strength cross first," she suggests. "Perhaps Bralin Stoneminder. In that way we would have two of our strongest on either bank to anchor the rope. It may prove a better defense for both sides of the gully as well."
The brown girl's brows knit into a frown as she stares into the rushing water.
"Arminas of Jahrlswolf and Andrath Silverhand can, perhaps, cover the far side with their weapons. Perhaps then, Merryn, you could cross with both a rope tied about your waist and a rope to use as balance. You could untie the rope when you reach the other side and we could pull it back for Arminas of Jahrlswolf to do the same. Arminas of Jahrlswolf might then protect this side with his bow."
Harvest looks again out across the waters. (Spot 22, Listen 19)
"You could then follow, Merryn Blackbridge. Elerinn Brazael could go next, followed by myself, then Andrath Silverhand. Finally Lorth Jeradosta could tie the rope about his waist and follow last."
For a third time, Harvest looks out across the waters. "Perhaps I am unnecessarily concerned, Lorth Jeradosta. And yet ... Would it be possible for you to feel the presence of evil across this stretch of water?"
Bralin d20+9=12 d20+6=11 Monday December 27th, 2004 11:21:41 AM
Bralin is of the same mind as the small monk. He possesses many advantages required for the first one across.
He nods once to her in agreement, and lets the more nimble person tie the rope around his waist.
Once he's affirmed Lorth has a hold of the rope, the dwarf strikes out across the gully. [Strength check 12 - used +4 stabilization and +1 insight bonus]
On the far side, he glances around for enemies before anchoring the rope. [Spot 11] [Seals - Sustenance, Insight]
Arminas d20+8=21 d20+10=12 Monday December 27th, 2004 3:03:23 PM
Arminas listens carefully to the plan laid out by Harvest, nodding at each point.
"I see no way to improve upon your plan. I will guard the far shore, and will cross second."
Arminas then notches an arrow in his bow, and carefully watches the far shore. (spot 21, listen 12).
Erwen flys in low circles above us.
[OOC: I will not be leaving town, I will be around to post]
Lorth Tuesday December 28th, 2004 7:39:19 AM
Lorth smiles at harvest moon, "Please just call me Lorth, no reason to use my full name." Turning away towards the far bank, he says, "I will attempt to sense some sort of darkness." Lorth then concentrates for a moment on the general area, and reports what he feels. After which he takes up the rope by tying it once about himself and holding onto it, when Bralin makes his way across.
Elerinn Tuesday December 28th, 2004 8:20:33 AM
Elerinn agrees with Merryn to repeat the procedure, especially since he has seen how dangerous the water can be. He patiently waits for his turn.
Pre-planning Precludes Problems (ADM Greg) Tuesday December 28th, 2004 6:50:32 PM
The party takes up Merryn's suggestions for the crossing, and everyone makes it safely across. The water, although wide and fairly fast, is only about 1' deep at the deepest. Elerinn is the only party member who must travel in water above his knees. And it is not as if the party can get any wetter, as the rain continues to fall. On the positive side, there has been no lightning seen in the past few hours.
Once across the larger gully, the party finds a smaller one, almost devoid of water, heading in the general direction of the fort. If you want to move along in the valley, there is always the threat of a flash flood. However, walking in the gully will provide significant cover from the howling wind and driving rain.
Regardless of the route selection, Merryn travels ahead of the party, but as before, can only range 20'-30 feet in front. [OOC: Please let me know where the party is travelling, in gully or outside. I expect that Merryn can make the call, since he is leading.]
If possible, this side of the large gully is even more devoid of life. Scattered here and there, the party can make out the dead, grey trunks of shattered trees. The background is a grey-brown world: grey sky, grey rocks, grey clay soil, grey tree trunks, and grey feelings.
Merryn, make a spot check.
Merryn d20+6=23 Tuesday December 28th, 2004 9:17:24 PM
Seeing the gully and pondering the shelter it provides, Merryn turns and speaks to the group:
"It's a tough call. In the gully we'll be soggy, on land we'll be soaked. I for one feel as though I cannot get any wetter or colder and so I think it would be safest to travel alongside the gully but not in it. I have no desire to meet my end drowned in a raging torrent. Also, that way if some shelter appears for the night, as it did the night before, we'll be well-placed to find it. Let us press on! Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, will keep us from reaching our destination! Although, everyone keep an eye out for some shelter for the night."
With that, Merryn turns around and presses forward against the wind, keeping a keen eye on his surroundings (Spot:23).
Harvest d20+9=13 d20+9=22 Tuesday December 28th, 2004 9:36:16 PM
Harvest listens to Merryn's well reasoned decision and nods. Before continuing, however, she steps apart from the group. The wee girl pushes her soaked crest of brown hair back off of her forehead in preparation to cast a spell. Muttering words consecrated to Gargul, she passes her carved wooden eye from forehead to sternum. A brief glow suffuses her form, then fades and vanishes.
Harvest Moon continues scanning the bleak landscape for danger. (Spot 13, Listen 22)She is wet, but now, she is no longer cold.

Arminas Tuesday December 28th, 2004 11:26:49 PM
Arminas keeps an eye on Merryn as the group moves along. Erwen flys low above the group.
"Let's get to the fort for shelter. I believe that we can make it by nightfall if we trudge on."
Elerinn Wednesday December 29th, 2004 5:58:36 AM
Elerinn doesn't feel like going into any gully again for the coming hours, so he is glad Merryn decides to continue over the wet, cold, but saver firm ground.
Lorth Wednesday December 29th, 2004 9:15:55 AM
Lorth follows along, he doesn't state an opinion of where to walk.
Bralin Wednesday December 29th, 2004 10:35:53 AM
Bralin nods with Merryn's reasoning. A flood poses danger, traversing the rim of the gully is merely uncomfortable.
After a short time, the dwarf revises his assessment. "Merely" becomes "Extremely". But, head bowed into the howling wind, he plods on without comment.
Strangers in the Day (ADM Greg) d20+4=12 d20+3=11 Thursday December 30th, 2004 5:25:03 PM
The party decides to put up with discomfort, rather than the possibility of another washout, and travel along the top of the gully.
In the continual dusk that is the storm, Merryn can make out two forms approaching in the gloom. The forms appear humanoid in shape, and are plodding in the general direction of the party, some 30'-40' distant.
[OOC: It would help if Merryn posted first, at this point.]
Merryn d20+6=11 Thursday December 30th, 2004 6:46:34 PM
Running back to the party, Merryn informs them of the two forms approaching in the distance.
"I could not make out much more than their forms, but perhaps someone with better eyes than I can make them out."
Turning to Arminas, Merryn asks "How do you wish to proceed? It is possible that people travelling through this part of the country might not have the cheeriest dispositions."
In light of his own suggestion, Merryn places his shortspear in his right hand and waits to hear the opinions of the others in the group on how the approaching people should be handled.
In the meantime he looks back to the forms, to see if he can notice anything further about them (Spot: 11).
Harvest d20+9=27 d20+9=28 Thursday December 30th, 2004 8:24:51 PM
Harvest looks into the rain in the direction from which Merryn had come. (Spot 27, Listen 28)
"Two? It may be Hugo and Langdon." Harvest comments quietly.
"But, perhaps it would be best if we did not find them," she says. "Perhaps it would be best if they found us. Though, not as directly as they might wish," she adds, pulling a bullseye lantern from her haversack.
"I will light this here and leave it. It will draw them, while we circle behind. If it is Hugo and Langdon, they will be pleased to see us. If not ... "
Harvest shrugs, and then looks to the others for their thoughts.
Bralin Friday December 31st, 2004 9:06:40 AM
Bralin draws his axe and is already stepping forward to challenge the interlopers when Harvest proposes a new plan.
Mentally shrugging, the dwarf follows the group in the encirclement manuever.
Arminas d20+10=12 d20+10=15 d20+10=19 d20+8=9 Friday December 31st, 2004 11:08:08 AM
Arminas readily agrees with Harvest. He readies his bow and tries to move silently around the encirclement. The driving rain and the wind makes it extremely difficult to see anything. Arminas wipes the rain from his eyes with his sleave, which is soaked. It does not seem to make much of a difference.
Andrath d20+11=27 d20+11=29 d20+17=34 Sunday January 2nd, 2005 9:51:47 PM
Andrath moves out to the other side of the party, opposite the direction that Arminas moved. He moves as quietly as possible, counting on his good eyesight and the magical goggles to help him spot the approaching figures. He draws his swords as he moves. [OOC: Hide 27, Move silently 29, Spot 34)
Live Foes in the Dead Zone (ADM Greg) d20+4=8 d20+3=17 Sunday January 2nd, 2005 9:58:03 PM
Merryn moves back to the main group, describing what he has just seen. He turns to look back over his shoulder, but can't make out the figures yet. [OOC: Spot is DC15 at this distance.]
Harvest Moon takes her backpack off her back, and digs out her lantern, some oil, and flint and steel, hoping that she will be able to coax a flame from the lantern in the blowing wind and rain.
Bralin draws his weapons, and moves towards the approaching figures.
Andrath and Arminas peel off to the left and right of the party, respectively. Arminas has a very difficult time seeing through the rain, but Andrath can clearly make out the two figures approaching the party, and at least a few more figures some 20' behind them.
The figures continue to approach the party, when suddenly one of them shouts, in orcish, "Who's there! Identify yourself!" They start to move forward more quickly. [OOC: And will be at Bralin in six seconds.]
Harvest d20+9=27 d20+9=28 Sunday January 2nd, 2005 10:55:53 PM
Harvest Moon, having neither flint nor steel, instead lights the lantern with a tinder twig instead. Then, noting nearness of the voice, she changes plans. Rather than leaving the bullseye lantern on the ground, she takes it with her. The light shines from it's reflective shield in a cone normally good for sixty feet. With the light held out in front of her, Harvest heads directly for the voices, hoping to catch the figures that Merryn spotted in the beam. If luck is with her, they may be blinded by the light. At the very least, it may reveal the figures as friend or foe. And, if foe, it may give Arminas and Andrath a better shot at them.
Rolls Spot 27 Listen 28
Notes Harvest's speed is 40 Oh, and if none if this is doable, then just move Harvest directly toward the two and arm her with the spiked chain.
Merryn d20+6=10 d20+8=18 Sunday January 2nd, 2005 11:09:22 PM
Running over to his gnomish friend, Merryn says quietly to Elerinn, "Did you hear that voice calling out? What was he saying? All I could make out were harsh grunts and growls ... At any rate, I suggest we take up a position behind Bralin and Harvest so that we might aid them from afar by doing what we do best - should it come to that." With that remark, Merryn's eyes glow a deep, verdant green for a moment to emphasize his point and then they return to their normal colour.
Merryn looks back towards the approaching figures in order to make them out a bit better (Spot: 10). He also listens carefully for any sounds of a fight erupting (Listen: 18).

Arminas freezes when he hears the guttural grunts, a sound he has heard before. If he could only know what the creature was saying.
Wiping the rain from his eyes, he strains to get a better view. Now he can see the figures, moving toward Bralin.

Elerinn Monday January 3rd, 2005 2:31:33 AM
Elerinn shakes his head slowly when Merryn asks if he can understand the voice calling out. "I'm sorry Merryn, but I don't understand any of it either." The gnome waits behind Bralin, ready to defend himself should the creatures attack.
Bralin (ac19) d20+9=27 d10+5=13 Monday January 3rd, 2005 10:40:00 AM
Like his companions, Bralin does not understand the language of the approaching figures.
But, its not Common or Dwarf, and that bodes ill in this territory.
Bralin braces against the impending attack, axe ready.

What, no password? (ADM Greg) d20=14 d20=5 d20=9 d20+9=11 d20+9=15 Tuesday January 4th, 2005 2:18:22 AM
Not hearing a response from the party, the dark figures charge forward, swinging their weapons. Once they enter the beam light cast by Harvest' lantern, the party can see that they are an orc and a hobgoblin. They both charge straight at Bralin, with the hobgoblin on his left.
Harvest does manage to get her lantern lit, and placed on the ground. The cone of light shines on Bralin's back, as the humanoids charge in. The wick flutters and almost goes out in the strong wind and rain.
Merryn and Elerinn wait to see what develops.
Arminas sees that they are in fact evil humanoids, bent on hurting the party, and fires his bow twice. The arrows both strike true, and the orc drops at Bralin's feet.
Bralin swings at the remaining foe, hitting the creature in the side. The beast snarls and swings back with its longsword, extra-powered from the charge. However, it slips on a patch of mud, and swings wildly.
More figures continue to move out the darkness and into the light. Three more orcs run in, hard on the heels of the first attackers. A hobgoblin, on the lookout for flanking attackers, spots Arminas and charges towards him, swinging his sword at the ranger, but missing as well.
[OOC: I will send a map tomorrow before lunch. But basically, the party is facing off against the hobgoblin and three orcs, and one hobgoblin is off to the right of the party, in melee with Arminas. Andrath is to the left of the party, and can move in this round.]
Merryn d20+5=10 d6+4=9 Tuesday January 4th, 2005 8:16:32 AM
Although it is still raining hard outside, Merryn hopes that the instantaneous effect of a produce flame spell will be enough to disable one of the foes attacking the party. Keeping an eye on the events ahead of him, Merryn singles out one of the Orcs not engaged in melee for attack. Uttering the magical druidic words and moving his hands quickly to perform the proper motions, Merryn's hand is enveloped with magical fire. He then quickly moves into position to hurl the flames at one of the orcs not engaged in melee.
OOC: I'm not sure if I have used up my actions for this round, so, if not:

Then, leaving the lantern upon the wet ground, Harvest Moon slides toward Bralin Stoneminder. The spiked chain comes into her hands as she moves. Taking up a position opposite Lorth Jeradosta, she waits, taking a shot at each opponent who comes within her ten foot reach.

Merryn produces a handful of flame and pitches at the nearest orc. The ball of flame catches the orc in the shoulder, and gives it a savage burn.
Arminas pulls his sword and swings at the hobgoblin facing him, but swings wildly. His eagle plummets from the sky and dives at Arminas' foe, taking a chunk out of the creature's cheek. [OOC: If you move in the round any farther than a 5' shift, you only get one attack, so I used the first attack roll from the eagle.]
Bralin swings at one of the orcs that has moved to face him, but slips in the mud and does not manage to connect.
Elerinn tells an off-colour joke, trying to get one of the orcs to break into laughter, but the orc fights off the spell.
Lorth moves forward to stand on the right side of Bralin.
Harvest casts her bless spell [OOC: standard action], and sets the lantern on the ground [OOC: move-equivalent action]. She shifts 5' closer to the orcs, but will have to wait until next round to draw her chain.
Andrath charges in from the side and swings at the orc burned by Merryn's spell, driving his sword deep into the creature and ending its life.

Lastly, the remaining orc swings at Lorth, and swings the most wildly of all, missing the paladin.

Lorth calls on his god's power, and deals the orc in front of him a mighty blow. But the orc still stands.
Since all the of the humanoids are in combat, Merryn throws his next ball of flame at the hobgoblin fighting Arminas and his eagle. The ball strikes true, singing the armour and hair of the hobgoblin.

Having lost his sling, Merryn decides that it would be unfruitful for him to chase the hobgoblin, for he could only strike him with another set of flames which might kill him. It seems more prudent for Harvest to retrieve him so that the party can pump him for information.
Looking around the battlefield, Merryn surveys the party for those companions who received wounds in battle. He calls out to the party, "While I am not cleric, I can heal minor wounds and so if you would like some assistance with them, please come to me."
Turning to Elerinn he says, "Well it looks like our position worked out well. Our magic struck true and we were able to help out the group." A slight smile crosses his lips and then he looks around him, making sure there are no enemies lurking in the darkness (Spot: 22; Listen: 27).

Arminas is happy that one of his arrows strikes it target, but the first arrow missed or the creature may have dropped.
"I need to practice more. Rain or not, a large target like that I should be able to hit."
Amazed at the speed the young lady makes chasing after the hobgoblin, Arminas withholds shooting more arrows. She has quickly caught up with the creature, and another arrow may hit the wrong target. Even though her close cropped hair caused Arminas to mistake Harvest for a man, the rain soaking her traveling cloak and the way her body heaves as she runs erases all doubt. Arminas quickly turns away, his face a bit red.
Calling Ewan over to him, Arminas bandages her wounds. "I should never have called you to attack my friend, I'm sorry that the creature turned on you. Here, this should make you feel better for now." Heal 25
"I hope the others return quickly."
The Chase Is On (ADM Greg) d20-2=14 d6=4 Wednesday January 12th, 2005 12:43:07 AM
Harvest Moon continues to chase after the hobgoblin. As she pulls alongside, she waits for her opportunity to attack opportunistically. However, this round the creature only moves 40' angling away from the monk, [OOC: a double move withdraw], and jumps into a nearby gulley. It lands hard with an grunt [OOC: taking non-lethal damage], and gets ready to run down the gulley. She can move her 40', and jump into the gulley to make a normal attack. The jump check is vs DC15, or take 1d6 non-lethal damage. However, she is now about 120' from the rest of the party, and visibility is about 50'-60' in the driving rain.
Bralin continues to chug along after the monk and the hobgoblin. [OOC: He can move up to 40' as a double move, without any penalties, and not necessarily in a straight line.] He is quickly losing sight of the party to the rear, and can just barely make out the monk and her quarry ahead.
Meanwhile, back at the battle site, the druid tries to find a spot to rest, even though it is only about noon.
Lorth checks over the bodies, and finds that the hobgoblin had studded leather armour, a small steel shield, a longsword and a javelin. In a dirty pouch, he finds 15 gp and 10 sp. The orcs each had chain mail and a greataxe, as well as a javelin and 10 gp each in their pouches. Further examination of the shield reveals a crudely painted symbol decorates the front: a humanoid skull with an axe partway buried in the cranium.
Arminas comforts and heals his bird.

Well, the day certainly seems long. Only noon, what a loon I am, Merryn thinks to himself. He gives up the search for a resting place and instead tries to find a dry patch or a rock to sit down on to rest himself a bit before the party starts travelling again.

Elerinn and Bralin follow after Harvest Moon, but the driving rain and the increasing distance between them offer only glimpses of her whereabouts. When the monk jumps down into the gulley, her two companions lose sight of her altogether. The hobgoblin spins to face the monk as she drops down from above, but is surprised by how easily she breaks her fall with a roll, and even more so by the speed of her subsequent strike. Almost doubled over by the blow, the hobgoblin fights through the pain and snarls a goblin curse at the persistent human [Fort Save=17].
The two opponents are standing in water and mud up to their shins. The hobgoblin dives at the wily monk and drives her into the mud. [Hit AC=18, Grapple=24, 4 HP non lethal]. With her body pinned under his, the goblin tries to force her head under the mud and water to drown her.
Above the rim of the gulley, some 60 feet back, Elerinn and Bralin are left wondering where their companion has gone. Wind drives the rain nearly horizontally at times stinging their faces with its force.
Merryn searches for a dry shelter, but all that he can find are one or two large boulders that provide some protection from the wind. Arminus, Lorth, and Andrath join the druid behind the rocks. The wind and rain make for poor visibility and even poorer conditions for hearing. No new dangers are noticed by any.
(We're baaaack! Thanks, ADM Greg, for taking over so we could take a DM vacation.)
Lorth Thursday January 13th, 2005 7:44:47 AM

Harvest (AC17, HP 18/28 -4 Subdual, BLESS) d20+4=20 d6=5 Thursday January 13th, 2005 8:39:52 AM
Harvest Moon feels dark fears stirring panic within her. The weight of the hobgoblin crushes down upon her body. Its hot panting breath covers her face.
"No," comes her small cry. She begins thrashing, squirming, possibly hitting and kicking. Who knows what happens when one is in the cold and dark of one's own mind? Perhaps it is that very fear that lent her the strength. Who knows?
Regardless of the reason, the next thing Harvest knows is that she is scrabbling through the mud away from the hobgoblin. Miraculously, the spiked chain is still in her hands, and she backs away to 15 feet in hopes that it's intimidating length will give her protection.
"Help," she calls out into the storm. "It is here." Hopefully someone is near. Hopefully it is one of her companions ... and not his.

Merryn Thursday January 13th, 2005 9:15:40 AM
Turning to Lorth, Merryn says "I hope you will not think me a coward for this, but I think the best thing to do is to stay here and wait for their return. Although we saw in what direction they were running, who knows where they may have run after the rain blurred them from our sight. They, however, know where we last were and will return here before trying to find us anywhere else."
Merryn leans back against the rock, staring out into the miserable rain. "Although, I do hope that they are alright ..."
Bralin Thursday January 13th, 2005 10:04:53 AM
Bralin sees no alternative but to keep heading for the monk.
"Come," he loudly cries to Elerinn, straining to be heard over the storm. The dwarf continues to power his way through wind and rain toward the spot he last saw Harvest.
[Double Move - 40']
Arminas d20+11=31 Thursday January 13th, 2005 10:21:22 AM
Arminas looks at his remaining companions, and nods at Lorth's suggestion to stay as a group.
"I agree, we should stay together. I wish our young monk friend were not so headstrong, though I feel somewhat responsible. I should have killed that creature as it ran."
After Merryn mentions that we may not be able to find them, Arminas adds: "I believe I can follow the tracks easily. See the rain has not yet obscured the impressions in the mud. See hear how there is a deep gouge. We should be able to follow these tracks for a while before the rain washes away all traces. What do you say, shall we wait or follow. I do not know the others as well as you, so cannot determine if they may be in danger."
If the other decide to follow, Arminas will track them through the mud. He will move at half normal speed so that he does not loose the trail. Factors: Very soft ground = DC 5 Survival check +10 4 creatures + 1 Rolled natural 20
Elerinn Thursday January 13th, 2005 11:03:39 AM
Elerinn hesitates when Bralin calls out to him, not entirely sure what the dwarf just said. The loud rain prevents him from understanding him and the gnome isn't sure about running after a dissapeared Harvest in this weather. Nevertheless, he follows his companion as fast as he can.
Double move: 40
Andrath (23/30 hp) Thursday January 13th, 2005 7:27:31 PM
Andrath asks, "Who is carrying the wand of curing? If we are going to the Crimson Fort, I would like to be as close to full health as possible."
After receiving the healing (hopefully), Andrath takes a closer look at the gear collected from the hobgoblin and orcs, to see if any of it is masterwork. [OOC: Take 10 on the appraise, for a total of 19.]
He takes a very wet and bedraggled rat out of the front of his armour, and pulls out some rations, to feed the critter.
If the others in the party have not returned in a minute or so, he heads out after Arminas, looking for the others.
DM Bob & Carla d20+6=15 Thursday January 13th, 2005 9:46:06 PM
The hobgoblin desperately tries to force the monk beneath the muddy water, but he loses his grip on the writhing human and can only roar in frustration as she slips from his grasp. The hobgoblin turns and runs along the gulley and away from Harvest Moon.
[Opposed grapple check=15. Harvest can either inflict grapple damage or escape. Given your post I will assume you chose the latter].
Above the rim of the gulley, Bralin and Elerinn move towards where they last saw the monk, but cannot see her. The two comrades are approximately 30 feet from the edge of the gully. [A listen check vs DC 15 will reveal the sound of a struggle in the gulley below]
Merryn and the others discuss their options as they crouch behind the boulders. Arminus spends a few moments and confirms that a confusion of deep footprints lead in a northeasterly direction through the muddy ground. Andrath notes nothing of particular quality in the pile of weapons and armor and readies himself to follow Arminus and the others should they decide to pursue the headstrong monk.
Merryn d20+6=18 d20+8=16 Thursday January 13th, 2005 10:20:23 PM
Turning to Arminas, Merryn says, "Well, if you are confident you can find them by their tracks, then I suppose we ought to get moving. Perhaps you could send Ewan [ooc: Erwen or Ewan?] on ahead so that they will know we are looking for them?"
Merryn readies himself to take up the chase, grimacing at the weather. "I was tired of sitting around here doing nothing anyhow," he jests.
He looks around before the party sets out for anything out of the ordinary [Spot: 18; Listen: 16] and then files in behind Arminas so as not to obscure any tracks.
Harvest (AC17, HP 18/28 -4 Subdual, BLESS) d20+5=22 Thursday January 13th, 2005 11:00:39 PM
Harvest Moon worries her lower lip. Each step in pursuit of the hobgoblin takes her farther and farther from her companions. And yet, what could a group of orcs and hobgoblins be doing out here? Is the group not headed for a the Crimson Fort? And might not these be scouts from this place?
Caerthon had said that orcs and goblins had been spotted in this area in greater numbers. Could this be no more than a roving band of marauders? Could they take the chance?
It is her duty to stop this one in case he alerts the Crimson Fort to their presence.
She glances briefly to the top of the gully and wishes that at least one of the others was as fast as she. And, for the briefest of moments, she fears that they may not be following. Yet, how could they allow one to escape and report back? They would not.
Harvest Moon runs on.

Hustling to the ravine's edge, he clambers down the muddy side. [Climb - 12]
Arminas Friday January 14th, 2005 12:18:27 PM
Arminas looks about at the others with him.
"They should have been back by now unless they were intent upon pursuing the creature or have been ambushed. I called to Harvest to return, but I think it is apparent she has decided another course. I am new to your group. Do you normally split up like this? It seems very dangerous to me."
"Well, if you are with me I say let's follow after them. If nothing else, we will at least reunite our group."
"Oh, and what's this I hear about a 'wand of curing'? I have bandaged Ewan's wounds, but would like to cure the eagle if possible. She fought as valiently as any, and was wounded trying to help us."
"Well, let's follow these tracks and solve the mystery of our lost friends."
Arminas sets out following the tracks. Ewan sets out flying above the group, her wounds make the effort seem painful.
Andrath (23/30 hp) d20+12=18 Monday January 17th, 2005 12:17:50 AM
Andrath rises to his feet, and prepares to take the rear of the party as they head after the missing members. "Stay together; we don't want to get any more separated in this weather. Merryn, hurry after the others; I don't think that these tracks are going to last long in this rain."
[OOC: Listen roll of 18 to hear Bralin's shout.]
DM Bob & Carla d20+8=25 Monday January 17th, 2005 12:39:31 AM
Arminus follows the tracks leading Merryn, Andrath, and Lorth through the driving rain. Despite their best efforts, Merryn and Andrath see nothing but the mud at their feet, and mist rising from the sodden ground. The wind and rain whip the words from their mouths, so that those behind can barely make out the admonitions of those in front. (OOC: about 3 rounds to reach the edge of the gully.)
A widening of the gully provides Harvest Moon with the opportunity to pull ahead of the hobgoblin. Panic flicks across the creature's face at the sight of the monk and her ever present chain. A moment's hesitation as he scans the steep sides of the gully, then he turns tail and barrels back the way he came.
A shower of mud and scree accompanies the dwarf's descent. He has just enought time to look up and see the wounded hobgoblin running pell-mell in his direction. The hobgoblin continues it's flight, lowering it's shoulder and overrunning the dwarf [Overrun=25] who is flattened in the process. Elerinn stands at the edge of the ravine, a soundless witness shivering in the rain.

"Bralin Stoneminder!" The words are almost a gasp of relief as Harvest picks out the form of the dwarf just before he is run down by the hobgoblin.
Hair and clothing plastered in rain water, the little monk splashes across the ground. She charges past the prone dwarf.
"You will warn no one," she says as she drives an elbow into the hobgoblin's kidney, again attempting to incapacitate it with pain.

Andrath (23/30 hp) Monday January 17th, 2005 10:08:50 PM
Andrath puts his head down, and pushes along after the druid and the ranger. Once again, he finds himself out of his element. Briefly, thoughts of a warm fire and a heated mug of mead cross his mind, but he quickly banishes those thoughts, and turns back to the task at hand ... which seems to be putting his head down and following the outdoor-types.
His pointy ears perk up at the mention of healing, and he looks back at Lorth and says, "If you are handing out healing from your curing wand, I could use one as well."
DM Bob & Carla d20+1=11 Monday January 17th, 2005 11:48:02 PM
From the top of the gully, Elerinn is witness to the fate of the hobgoblin as it falls to it's knees. A gasping cackle escapes the creature's lips (Will Save=11, fail) before it pitches forward into the mud. The little brown monk has achieved her goal of turning the thing from it's flight to the Crimson Fort and brought it down with her supernatural precision. Bralin pulls up to find the 6 ft. creature prone, face down in the mire of the trench.
Tracking carefully, Arminus leads his companions on. Merryn thinks he hears something, or is it the wind playing tricks? Andrath and Lorth follow behind, and the paladin offers to check out the elf's animal companion.
(OOC: Harvest was successful in detecting the direction of the Crimson Fort. The tracking companions will achieve the edge of the gully this post.)
Lorth Tuesday January 18th, 2005 7:57:46 AM

To ignore the providence delivered unto her would be wasteful and lacking in gratitude, regardless of the source. Harvest quickly pulls the coil of silk rope from her haversack.

Bralin Tuesday January 18th, 2005 2:06:30 PM
Bralin stands next to monk and hobgoblin, watching her tie it up.
His response to her thanks is as tactful as ever.
"You should not have pursued," he replies bluntly, and looks for the easiest way back up the ravine wall.
Elerinn Tuesday January 18th, 2005 4:43:34 PM
Elerinn looks at the unconscious hobgoblin and realizes it will probably wake soon. When Bralin and Harvest start to climb up the ravine, he calls out to them: "Hey, maybe we should tie the creature up! After it regains consciousness, it will probably go to the Crimson Fortress after all!"
Andrath (back to full hit points) Tuesday January 18th, 2005 8:59:29 PM
Andrath feels the healing power from Lorth course through him, and says, "My thanks, Lorth. I thought that we had a wand of curing in the party, but perhaps not."
Once the party is all together, Andrath will look over the edge of the gully at Harvest Moon and Bralin and their captive. "Well, you caught him, now you have to take care of him. I don't think that hobgoblins make very good pets. I sure hope that he is house-trained."
"Now, what way to the Fort?"
DM Bob & Carla d100=83 Tuesday January 18th, 2005 10:54:06 PM
Arminus leads on with Merryn, Andrath, and Lorth following quickly behind. The sharp eyed duo at the front spot Elerinn, and rush up to join him at the edge of the gully.
Bralin and Harvest Moon remain at the bottom of the trench, the unconscious and bleeding hobgoblin face down in the deep mud between them. Harvest is able to tie a firm knot and bind the creature, but he isn't going anywhere anyway. Looking up, the monk spots Elerinn, who is quickly surrounded by the rest of the Swords of Light.
The brunt of the storm having passed, the wind slacks off, however the rain continues in an incessant miserable drizzle.
Merryn Tuesday January 18th, 2005 11:28:26 PM
Calling down to Harvest, Merryn yells "Well I see you got your man ... er ... Hobgoblin man. We shall have to revive him to ascertain what he and his friends were doing in these parts. I certainly do hope someone in the party can understand him."
Merryn waits at the top of the gully until the direction to the fort is indicated. When this is done he will follow the party in that direction.
Harvest (AC17, HP 18/28 -4 Subdual) d20+9=15 Tuesday January 18th, 2005 11:47:42 PM
Harvest Moon looks chastised. Her eyes shift as she tries to understand why her pursuit of the hobgoblin was the incorrect choice.
Placing that thought to the side for but a moment, "We should get this one to the top of the cliff," she says. She scans the cliff face for a possible path. (Spot 15)
"Why, Bralin Stoneminder?" she asks. Unable to understand, she searches for remedy to her lack using the tools available to her. Questions. "Why was it incorrect to have run after the hobgoblin?"
Lorth Wednesday January 19th, 2005 9:02:14 AM
Lorth looks down into the ravine, glad to see his friends are ok. He uncoils his rope and throws one end down to his friends. "Tie my rope under the hobgoblins arms and I'll haul him up."
Bralin Wednesday January 19th, 2005 9:22:39 AM
Bralin lets Harvest tie the rope around the hobgoblin, as she is better at such things. He answers her question.
"In your pursuit, you split our company. Had he allies, they gain the advantage by facing us one by one. The storm increases the risk. Our company forever losing sight of one another."
"You overcame those risks," the dwarf admits, "but present us an unwelcome challenge. What shall we do with a prisoner we cannot bring with us?"
Arminas Wednesday January 19th, 2005 9:38:35 AM
Arminas is glad he has found the rest of the group, and that it is the Hobgoblin that is subdued instead of the other way around.
"I can see why the Woldian League of Adventures sent me. I don't think you would ever have found each other again in this storm. Really though, you don't see the scrapes in the mud and bent vegetation that clearly marks the path? Well, it seems very clear to me. Anyway, who speaks hobgoblinish?"
"Oh, and do we have a wand of curing or don't we? I sure would like Ewan to be cured. She was very brave."
Then looking at Harvest Moon he adds:
"Of course you are wounded too. Very seriously it looks. You of course were also very brave. Can anyone provide healing? If not, I have a couple of potions that I keep in reserve."
Harvest (AC17, HP 18/28 -4 Subdual) Second Illegal Post Wednesday January 19th, 2005 10:15:58 AM
Little time or thought is required to assess the inherent wisdom in Bralin Stoneminder's words.
"I am sorry." Harvest Moon dips her head in apology. With eyes downcast she adds, "I will endeavor not to repeat the same mistake, Bralin Stoneminder."
Without looking back up, the small waterlogged girl turns to extend her bindings into a harass running under the hobgoblins arms.
Elerinn Wednesday January 19th, 2005 4:11:11 PM
Elerinn is glad to see the other members of the group and greets them, visibly relieved. He realizes that Bralin might be right and pursuing the hobgoblin wasn't the best thing to do in this situation. But then again, the creature might have warned others of his kind of the approaching Swords of Light. Now he has stopped running and he doesn't concentrate on chasing Miss Moon and the hobgoblin, Elerinn feels how cold his wet clothes actually are. He shivers and softly says: "We'd better continue, the weather isn't getting any better."
Andrath Wednesday January 19th, 2005 10:41:06 PM
Andrath waits for Harvest to throw up the rope, so that he can help to haul the unconscious figure out of the ditch. "Bralin, can you tell how hurt the creature is? We may want to ask him some questions about what he knows about the Fort, assuming that is where he is from."
DM Bob & Carla Thursday January 20th, 2005 12:17:20 AM
Anxious to move on, Merryn waits at the top of the gully with a shivering Elerinn. Arminus wonders how "The Swords of Light" managed to survive this long without him, and fusses about wounded party members and animal companions. Lorth tosses down a rope, and Andrath voluteers to help.
Harvest Moon digests the party's displeasure as Bralin explains how her actions exposed the group to danger. The dwarf's concerns about what to do with the prisoner are moot, when upon turning the hobgoblin over, it is obvious that he is dead. From wounds inflicted, or suffocation from lying face down in the mud, it is hard to tell.
The little brown monk finds no safe trail in the steep and slippery sides of the gully, however the paladin's rope offers hope of a safe way out. Both she and the dwarf will be able to safely climb out of the trench using the rope, and helped over the edge by the elven rogue.

Merryn moves over towards Lorth and takes hold of part of his rope saying, "Not that I can be of any great assistance, but I will help you hold the rope while the others climb up." (Str. Check: 2)
Once the others are up, Merryn walks over to Harvest and says, "Don't be too frustrated, young monk. You did succeed in stopping him from informing others about our presence here. To be certain, there was danger in splitting the party in two, but there may have been more danger still in having that hobgoblin call a whole troop of his friends upon us. Here, although this may just stop the bleeding, I can be of some assistance." Merryn's eyes glaze over as he chants the ancient words and moves his hands through the air preparing Cure Minor Wounds (cures 1 hp of damage). He lays his hands on one of the monk's wounds and it seals up, partially easing her pain.
"At any rate, we ought to get moving towards the Fort, lest we drown in this incessant rain."
Lorth Thursday January 20th, 2005 8:32:41 AM
Lorth holds the rope, so his companions have something to help them climb up, he doesn't try to haul them up just aid in their accent. After the two climb out of the ravine, Lorth says, "I can yet heal a small bit more this day. I am not sure who requires it the most, please ask if you do."
Harvest (AC17, HP 18/28 -4 Subdual) Thursday January 20th, 2005 8:41:07 AM
Harvest Moon turns rolls the hobgoblin over, only to find that it has already left its body. She sighs; and it is a sigh of sadness. Then she undoes the bindings.
Upon gaining the top of the cliff, the small brown girl bows her head in apology to the rest of the group. "I apologize," she says in a voice, quiet, yet penetrating in the falling rain. "It was a mistake to have pursued the hobgoblin on my own. And it was a mistake to have suggested the lantern." He dips her head again. Again the gesture of apology. "Would it possibly be better, in the future, to avoid contact with other beings until we reach the Crimson Fort? Unless, perhaps, we are certain of their identity?"
"Please, Lorth Jerad ... Lorth," she says, turning her face to the eagle with a smile. "Please tend to Ewan's wounds over mine."
With another dip of her head, she withdraws, leaving the question pending. Retrieving her lantern, Harvest stows it carefully within her haversack. Only then does she allow herself to feel the wounds of combat. Gingerly she touches the single great axe wound in her side. She breathes to still it's crying voice. At the end of the day, if she is still able, she will tend to it. For now, there are still miles to travel.
Bralin d8+1=4 d8+1=3 d8+1=6 d8+1=7 d8+1=5 Thursday January 20th, 2005 10:03:32 AM
The death of the hobgoblin evokes no reaction at all from the dwarf. Bralin simply moves on to the next task.
Noting that Harvest requires healing, Bralin pulls his wand out of his backpack and taps the monk a few times to completely heal her. [Cure Light Wounds - 4 and 3 and 6 hp - 13 total]
He does the same to Andrath. [Heal 7 hp]
And the bird, though his brow furrows at the necessity of it. [Heal 5 hp]
Bralin silently stows the wand, and waits for Merryn to resume the march, falling in beside Lorth when they do.
Arminas Thursday January 20th, 2005 2:26:44 PM
Arminas looks down at the hobgoblin with disgust.
"At least it is dead. Harvest, you seem to be very persistent and deadly when you set your mind to it. It is very noble of you to think of Ewan before yourself. I will remember your kindness. However, I can keep Ewan from harms way much easier than a headstrong young lady, you take the healing."
When Bralin brings forth the wand, Arminas is visibly relieved.
"Thank-you Master Bralin for your kindness. Niether Ewan or I will soon forget it. If either of us can come to your aid, we will."
Ewan then takes to the sky, her wings beating against the damp air as she circles high above the group.
"Let's get to the fort."
Harvest (Second Illegal Post) Thursday January 20th, 2005 2:57:21 PM
Harvest inclines her head in thanks, first to Bralin Stoneminder and then Arminas of Jahrlswolf.
"I think I know the direction of the Crimson Fort," the small brown girl says in her quiet voice. She points through the falling rain. "It's that way."
[[ OoC: Sorry, meant to include a direction to the Fort in my earlier post, but forgot. ]]
Andrath Thursday January 20th, 2005 10:39:49 PM
When Bralin approaches Andrath with the wand, the elf says, "Keep the charge, Bralin; I need no further healing. Lorth was able to completely heal my wounds with his powerful hands."
"Harvest, you are clearly faster than the rest of us. Your speed can be a blessing, but please don't let it get you in trouble."
Glad that the wind has let up a little, Andrath prepares to take his place at the rear of the party, as they continue towards the fort.
